Jada and Harris questioned a suspect about the drug case. The suspect refused to say anything. Jada wanted to run a background check on him to get more information. Harris offered to help the suspect if he gave them his boss’ name. He took the suspect to booking. Harris found out the suspects name was Hulsenkamp. Hulsenkamp refused to say anything. Everett showed up and asked if he could interrogate the suspect. Harris said he couldn’t. Everett explained why he needed to talk to the suspect, but Harris was afraid to lose his job. Everett left the police station. Stephanie and Jada met at the pub and talked about the last time they were together. Jada asked if Harris got her home safely. Stephanie said he did and was a perfect gentleman. Jada asked if she had feelings for Harris. Stephanie said he wasn’t her type. She said she kissed her ex on New Year’s. Stephanie said it wasn’t Chad or Alex. She said it was the one from Seattle.

Theresa and Brady went to see Tate. She said when this was over, she was going to sue EJ. Brady wanted her to focus on getting Tate out of prison. A police officer brought Tate to see Theresa and Brady. Tate had his head down. They wanted to see his face. When he lifted his head, they noticed he had a black eye. Brady wanted to know what happened and who hit him. Tate said a man punched him in the face. They thought he shouldn’t be in there. Theresa said Brady was going to do something about it. She told him to talk to Nicole and see if they could get Tate’s bail reinstated. Brady said he didn’t know how receptive Nicole would be based on the circumstances. He said he would do his best. Tate said he wouldn’t get his hopes up. When Brady left, Theresa told Tate he was being brave. He said he was faking it because he was scared. Tate said he didn’t know how long he could take it. She said she and Brady wouldn’t rest until he was out of prison. EJ brought Nicole home from the hospital. Nicole thought she should have stayed there. She said she felt like she was living in a nightmare. EJ reminded her that Holly was young and strong. He reminded her that he was shot in the head and survived. She said she was starting to lose faith that Holly would get better. Nicole thought God was punishing her. EJ said he didn’t think she was being punished. Brady showed up to see Nicole. EJ told him not to plead Tate’s case. Nicole said she wanted to talk to Brady. EJ left them alone. Brady apologized for what happened to Holly. He asked her to get EJ to see that Tate was innocent. Brady said Tate was attacked in prison. He said EJ had the bail revoked and wanted to try Tate as an adult. Brady said he was afraid of losing his son and wanted EJ to reconsider. She asked if he thought Tate was innocent. He said he believed Tate was telling the truth. She was upset and wanted Brady to leave. When Brady left, Nicole blamed herself for what happened to Holly. EJ said Holly would recover and he would make Tate pay for what he did. Brady went to the police station and told Theresa and Tate what happened. He swore on his grandfather he would get Tate out of there.

Theresa was upset about Tate being tried as an adult. Alex told her to consider other options. He asked if she reached out to her father. She said she hasn’t been able to get in touch with him. Theresa blamed herself for what was going on with Tate. She admitted that she did things recently. Alex wanted her to tell him what she was talking about. Before she could answer him, Eric showed up. She told him she wasn’t doing well. He said he understood what she was going through. Eric said he killed Holly’s father years ago. He said he would help her if she needed it. She wanted him to talk to Nicole about Tate. Eric said he would talk to her later. Melinda went to see Sloan. Sloan said she couldn’t take it anymore because Nicole could lose her only surviving child. She said they should give Nicole her baby back. Melinda warned her to think about it because EJ would nail them for kidnapping. She said their lives would be over. Sloan told her Leo was blackmailing her because he knows the truth. She told her what happened when Nicole kidnapped the baby. Melinda said that was reason not to feel sorry for Nicole. Sloan thanked Melinda for talking her out of telling the truth.

Brady told Marlena he was upset about Tate being arrested. He said he couldn’t see him until tomorrow. Brady told her he did his best to help Tate, but nothing worked. He blamed himself for being a bad father. Marlena said he wasn’t a bad father. She invited him to go to dinner with her, John and Steve. Kristen showed up and yelled at him for not seeing Rachel. Marlena left to meet John and Steve at the pub. Brady said he would meet them later. He apologized to her and told her Tate was arrested. He said EJ was causing problems. She said she would tell Rachel what happened and give him another chance to see Rachel. If he disappointed Rachel again, Kristen threatened to make him pay for it. He said he was letting his children down. She said he would get through this. At the pub, John and Steve talked about Tate’s arrest. John said he was worried about Brady. He said he hoped Holly would wake up and clear things up so EJ would let go of the vendetta he had. Konstantin researched how he knew John. When he found out Maggie was at the hospital visiting Holly, he decided to stop by the pub. Konstantin told John and Steve that their attempt to run him out of town failed because he wasn’t leaving. He told John his past couldn’t be ignored so easily. John said he didn’t do anything wrong. Konstantin reminded him of their past encounter when John looked like an assassin. John and Steve said they would call the ISA to make him leave. He said he could start a new life on an island. Steve told Konstantin to leave town on his own.

While Chad and Everett were at the Spectator, Everett told Chad he wasn’t getting anywhere with the investigation. He said he had a conversation with Chad’s brothers. Everett said he saw them arguing, but they stopped, which made him suspicious. He said he found out EJ was involved in drugs. Chad said it was what got him killed. Everett said he found out the Bistro appeared to be the drug central in Salem. Chad said he didn’t think Stefan was involved with drugs. Stephanie showed up with food. She said she and Everett had a meeting. Chad left so they could be alone. Maggie showed up at the hospital to see Holly. She let Nicole know Holly was going to survive. Maggie said Holly reminded her of her father. Nicole promised to be grateful to Holly once she gets better. She said they should pay attention to the people they love. Nicole asked if Maggie noticed any signs that Holly was using drugs. Maggie said she didn’t notice any signs. She said addicts were able to hide their addictions. Maggie said it was possible Holly wasn’t an addict. Nicole said she didn’t blame Tate for what happened. She said she blamed herself for not realizing what Holly was going through. Paulina showed up at the hospital. She promised to do everything she could to get the drugs off the streets. When she started coughing, Nicole and Maggie got her water. They wondered if she was okay. Paulina promised to get to the bottom of things.

Tripp told Ava he wasn’t going to China. He said he was worried about her and wanted to be there. Ava said nothing was going on. She told him it was okay with her if he wanted to lose the woman he loved. When Ava said she was going to bed, he asked her why she was happy about him leaving town. He said he felt responsible for keeping her safe. Wendy came back and said she couldn’t leave without him. Ava left them alone to talk. They talked about her staying in Salem. Ava showed up at the DiMera mansion to tell Stefan that Tripp and Wendy didn’t leave Salem. Chad showed up and wondered why she was there. Stefan said they had work to do. Chad asked if it had anything to do with the drug exposure in Salem. While Chad was questioning Stefan and Ava, she said she and Stefan were involved. Chad let Stefan know that it would end badly for him if he was involved in the drug cartel. When Chad left, Stefan and Ava talked about not taking their relationship too far.

Transcript provided by Thane and Suzanne

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[dramatic music]

Hey, so when should I expect you? I’m just trying to plan out dinner.

I’m sorry. I won’t be home for a while. I got to stop by and see my cousin Theresa.

Oh. What’s the latest? Any news?

[sighs] The police, they arrested Tate for giving Holly the drugs. God, Theresa, she must be going out of her mind about this.

And how’s Holly doing?

Not good. She had a seizure while I was visiting her.

Oh, my God.

Hey, listen, I got to go. But I’ll be home as soon as I can.

OK, well, we’re doing fine over here, so–

OK. I love you.

I can’t believe they’re gonna try Tate as an adult.

It’s outrageous.

No, it’s a travesty, Alex. I mean, what is the point of having legal age of majority if he can just charge a -year-old as an -year-old?

I–I don’t know, but there’s got to be something I can do.

Like what? We’ve done everything. I mean… it’s not right. It’s not fair. My poor son.

[sighs]

Come here.

There you are. How did it go? I don’t have to ask. It must have been so tough.

It was. I can’t even see Tate until tomorrow morning. He’s in holding. No one can see him. His–his own father can’t even see him. -year-old boy, his father can’t get in to see him. And I know he’s scared. I know he’s scared.

I’m so sorry.

[sighs] I tried everything. Marlena, I tried everything I could to help him. Nothing–nothing– nothing helped. Tried to take the rap for him. Just made it worse.

[sighs] I’m the worst father on the–on the planet.

So not only is my grandson sitting in a jail cell, but they’re gonna try him as an adult now. Can you believe that?

That’s a tough break, man. That kid doesn’t deserve it.

I know he doesn’t deserve it. And you know what? It’s all because EJ DiMera has just gone off the deep end there. It’s a total abuse of power for any district attorney to try to pull this kind of crap. And I’ll tell you something. It’s killing me to watch Brady have to go through this.

Hey, hey. I know. I know it is. But listen to me, buddy.

[sighs]

You’re obviously there for him %. That’s all you can do for him right now.

So many years. Could this be the man?

[sighs] Oh, no, it could not. He was supposed to be dead. No, I need to do some more digging.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[dramatic music]

[knock at door]

Oh, finally. Hey, come on in. And thank you for getting over here so quickly.

Well, your message had me worried. I mean, what’s going on? No offense, but you look beat.

Yeah, I was awake most of the night. Look, I just– I can’t take this anymore.

Oh, OK. Well, that’s a normal feeling. Parenting a newborn is exhausting.

No, it’s not that. It’s Nicole. It’s just too much.

OK, hey, just– just take a breath and try to calm down.

[scoffs] When in the history of calming down has anybody calmed down by being told to calm down?

OK, I’m sorry. You’re right. You’re right. What about Nicole?

There is a real possibility that Nicole may now lose her surviving child to a drug overdose, which means she will have lost two children in a matter of weeks, being childless. And just the guilt from that is– it’s eating me alive. I can’t keep living in this deception. Melinda, we have to do something.

What are you suggesting?

We have to give the baby back.

Have you considered reaching out to your dad? I mean, the guy’s the head of the ISA. He practically runs the world. Maybe he can help Tate.

Yeah, I can’t get ahold of him. He’s on some undercover mission somewhere. My mom said she doesn’t know where.

Hmm. What about your brother? Wasn’t he in town recently?

Andrew? He’s not gonna pull any strings for me. He probably thinks that Tate’s a big screwup like me. Maybe he’s just a big, colossal screwup.

Theresa, please stop talking about yourself that way. You got to stop. You are not a screwup.

Oh, yeah, you don’t know about all the stuff I’ve done in the past and recently.

What do you mean? What kind of things have you done recently?

So Alex becomes the heir, and… Xander ends up with nothing.

He would squander all the money away anyway.

Agreed. But why Alex Kiriakis? Why make him the wealthy man in Xander’s stead?

We have a connection going. We’ve already talked about going out. He seems real interested.

Oh.

And if I can make something happen fast, something between us before he learns that he’s the heir, then he won’t have to question me going after him for his inheritance.

Theresa… what kind of things did you do recently?

I don’t know, just things, you know… the usual. Colossal screwup, remember, like I said.

[knock at door]

[sighs] Oh, OK. Hey.

Hi.

Come on in.

Hey. How’s it going?

Hey. Hope it’s OK that I stopped over.

Of course, yeah.

[sighs] So, what, you here to tell me what a bad parent I am? That it’s Tate’s fault that Holly took the drugs? Because if you are, Eric, just save it. Because, honestly, there is nothing that you can say right now that I haven’t already said to myself to beat myself up over.

Stop being so hard on yourself. The reason why I stopped by is because I want to give you this.

Brady, you are not a bad father.

[clears throat] No? I mean, Tate was kicked out of boarding school, right? So I brought him here to Salem to straighten him out, yet his situation went from bad to worse, OK? If I hadn’t brought him back from California, none of this crap would have happened to him.

That’s not true; this could have happened anywhere.

But it didn’t happen anywhere. Marlena, it happened here, under my nose. I just have to wonder whether… I was just being selfish when I brought him back here. Was I being selfish? I mean, did I have his best interests at heart or mine? My God, and everything that’s going on with my son, I still have lost custody of my daughter as well.

Look. That may well turn around, but if it doesn’t, it’s a travesty.

Mm-hmm.

And, Brady, as far as Tate goes, you didn’t force him. He wanted to stay here, didn’t he?

That’s what he said, yeah.

We can’t always make our children do what we’d like them to do. But when they suffer, we suffer. But we have to let them make a choice. And that done, if it’s a bad choice, then– then there are consequences. And that’s exactly how they learn.

The hard way, right?

The hard way.

Thank you for being here for me and for my son. I always appreciate you.

Always, always, always. Say, I was gonna meet Steve and John at the pub for supper. Will you join us?

[sighs] Food? Yeah, that sounds good.

Oh, good.

I’ll do that, yeah.

Great.

[knock at door] Wow. Sorry. Excuse me. Oh, Kristen, what do you want?

I’m here for him.

Oh, it seems like Maggie has gone to the hospital to check in on her baby granddaughter, Holly. Oh, I should stop by, bring her some flowers. Huh. Hmm.

So is there any way to get through to EJ before he throws the book at Tate, get him to back off?

Nah, I doubt it. Like I said, it’s obvious the son of a bitch isn’t thinking rationally. It’s all about revenge now. He wants to use Tate as a scapegoat for his misery. So all we can hope for is that Holly pulls through this, remembers everything that happened that night, and she can set the record straight.

[door slams]

What the hell?

Huh. And we meet again. Oh, but I can tell by the looks on your faces, you’re not too pleased to see me.

You got that right.

[chuckles]

What are you still doing in Salem?

Can you not figure it out? You blew it, gentlemen. Your…

[laughs] Magnificent escapade to try to run me out of town was a miserable failure.

Well, you’re not only audacious. You’re also a fool for walking around in public– unless you wanted us to find you.

The only thing I wanted is the Brady Pub clam chowder. I hear it is unmatched.

You can’t possibly be this stupid. Now, go on. Turn around. Get the hell out of here. We’ll be right behind you to give you an escort to the airport.

[chuckles] Oh, I appreciate greatly the escort to the airport. But I am not leaving today nor anytime in the near future. In fact, the only way I will be gone from Salem is if you two gentlemen kidnap me again or murder me. I wouldn’t put it past you.

[dramatic music]

Give the baby back to Nicole? No, no, no, no. Sloan, get real. I mean, my God, you are a lawyer. Surely you realize if we do that now, we will be on the hook for a very serious crime.

So be it. I can represent myself. I’ll plead insanity if I have to.

You are not thinking straight. The current DA– that would be EJ DiMera– he believes that the baby he lost is his biological child. If he finds out that we took this baby, he will nail us to the wall for kidnapping. We would be risking everything by exposing ourselves– our reputations, our freedom. Our lives would be over. Do you not understand that? Listen, I heard what EJ is doing to Brady Black’s kid. And if you think that’s bad, wait till you see what he does to us if you reveal the truth about this baby. We will be spending the rest of our days in prison. Is that what you want?

How you holding up?

[sighs] Not very well. Have you gone to see Holly and Nicole?

Yeah, I just came from the hospital. Nothing’s changed in her condition. All we can do right now just keep her in our prayers.

And keep Tate in your prayers too.

Of course, Theresa. No matter what happened, I’ll always love Tate and Holly. No matter what– what happened, it d– I can never judge either of them.

But would you judge me?

Theresa… Eight years ago, I made a choice. I drove drunk. I killed Holly’s father. Right now, you, Tate, and Holly, you all need compassion. Nobody knows that better than I do.

Where have you been?

All right, look–

Where have you been?

Just–just don’t. It’s been a long night. Don’t–

Oh, a long, long night, huh? You poor baby. Did you forget that you were supposed to see your daughter an hour ago?

Yeah. Yeah, I did forget. I–I’m sorry. I forgot because I’ve been preoccupied, OK?

Oh, preoccupied. Right, right.

Just a little.

Unbelievable, Brady. You know, you have badgered me for weeks to see her.

I know.

And when I finally agree, you stand up your own daughter.

Will you let me explain?

Yeah. No, please–

I can explain what’s been going on.

Oh, please explain, Brady. I would love to hear why you left your daughter in tears. You should have seen her little face, Brady. “Daddy didn’t show up to see me, Mommy.” So where the hell have you been? And before you even answer that, let me tell you, this better be damn good.

[sighs]

One’s past cannot be swept so easily under the carpet, Mr. Black. I haven’t forgotten that when you two kidnapped me, you were lurking in the corner like an assassin. My hands are clean. Can you say the same? Huh?

[dramatic music]

You want to talk clean hands? I will make one call to the ISA, and your sorry ass is gonna wake up on a desolate island permanently.

No communication, no way out. Clean and simple.

You better be skilled at building mud huts as you are running your mouth.

[laughs] A desolate island. Tranquil peace. It sounds ideal. I could start a new life, just as you have, Mr. Black. In an environment like that, I could surely be reminded of my– my home, my beautiful villa in… Aria. Oh, do you know the place, Mr. Johnson?

[sighs]

Hmm?

Sloan, I know that Holly’s overdose is a shock. But it’s not like you to be in such a tailspin. What’s really going on here?

It’s everything. It’s the lack of sleep. It’s balancing parenting and work and this constant feeling of living in guilt. It’s the expenses. It’s all just too much.

Expenses? What do you mean, for the baby?

No, not for the baby. I’m being blackmailed.

Blackmailed? By who?

Leo Stark. He knows that Jude is Nicole’s baby.

What?

Yeah.

How could he know that? Dimitri is locked up in a supermax prison. Oh, my God. He must have told Leo everything before he got transported.

Yeah, well, it’s much worse than that, because Leo knows that I had some kind of involvement in having Dimitri sent away to a maximum security facility.

Oh, God.

And let me just tell you, he is out for revenge.

Sloan, tell me you didn’t mention me to Leo. Please tell me that I am not compromised in this.

You’re not. Leo has no idea of any of your involvement. It’s fine. He’s just sure as hell out for me. That little creep has been draining me for every penny that I’m worth.

Conniving little mooch.

Yeah, well, I somehow managed to reel in his crazy spending just for a little while. But who knows how long that’s gonna last or what he’s even gonna demand next?

You know, I suffered a tremendous amount of guilt. I went to prison for the crime that I committed. While I was there, I learned a lot about myself. I had regret and shame… Something I’ll always have to live with. But while I was there, I remembered that I have to forgive myself.

I’m really glad that you were able to do that. But you have to understand that Tate’s situation is different to yours because he’s innocent. And Holly chose to take those drugs herself.

Listen, I understand that. But no matter how it went down, we’re all hurting here. I just want you to know if there’s anything that I can do to help, I’m here for you.

Actually, maybe there is something you can do.

Kristen, there’s a lot going on with this family right now. Please, please listen to Brady.

Marlena, it’s–it’s– it’s OK. I–I can handle this. Why don’t you go have a– a meal with my father, and I’ll hopefully join you later?

OK. Please tell Rachel that her grandparents miss her.

Mm-hmm.

[claps hands] OK. Let’s hear it.

You know that I wouldn’t miss a moment with my daughter unless I had a really good reason, right? Tate’s in jail.

What? OK, what did he do?

He didn’t do anything. That’s the whole point. He went to a New Year’s Eve party with Holly Jonas, and Holly had some drugs on her, much to his surprise. Kristen, she OD’d. She overdosed. She is currently on life support and in a coma. She almost died outside the Bistro.

Oh, my God. I’m sorry.

No, and to make matters worse, your brother EJ, he’s on the warpath. He thinks it’s all Tate’s fault. He thinks that the drugs were Tate’s, that he convinced Holly to take the drugs, and the only reason that she is clinging to life right now is because of my son. He has managed to revoke my son’s bail, and my son is in a jail cell. And he’s gonna be tried as an adult– as an adult.

Well… I had no idea this was happening. Rachel and I have been out of town, so…

I know you’ve been out of town. I don’t know what I’m gonna– I don’t know what I’m gonna say to our daughter. I got to tell her that I stood her up. Sorry I forgot that I was gonna see you, and your brother’s in jail. Happy New Year, honey.

I will break the news to her, Brady. I will explain everything. You don’t have to worry about it, all right?

You’re being–you’re being kind to me right now. I’d like to know what the catch is.

Why didn’t you tell me that Leo was blackmailing you and bleeding you dry?

Because I’ve had a lot on my mind, OK? You know, before this whole mess with Leo, I was dealing with Nicole kidnapping my son.

Wait. Kidnapping? I thought it was all an innocent mix-up. Wait, are you saying that Nicole took the baby intentionally?

Oh, I am sure she planned it. And I can also guarantee that she had no intention of bringing him back until EJ shaked some sense into her, convinced her to bring Jude to the police station. But then Eric talked me into covering up for Nicole.

And why the hell would you do that?

Because I have a conscience, OK? So…then I told the police that we had asked Nicole to babysit.

[scoffs]

Yeah. Can you believe that?

[dramatic music] But I did it for Eric.

[sighs] I do wish that I would have just… violated my conscience and just gone with my gut. Because…I can’t stand seeing that woman out and knowing that I helped her.

Then why the hell are you feeling sorry for her? I mean, yes, it is awful that Nicole might lose her daughter. No one understands how horrible that is more than me. But, Sloan, you had nothing to do with Holly’s overdose. Stay the course, Sloan, please. You have everything you have ever wanted– a loving husband, a healthy baby, a successful career. Don’t blow it all now, not for yourself… and not for me.

Yeah, of course. What can I do?

OK… maybe you could speak to Nicole. Maybe you could–you could plead Tate’s case and– and tell her that he would never, ever, ever try to hurt Holly, that he was actually trying to help her. Then maybe she’ll go to EJ and–and get him to back off a little bit and listen to reason.

OK.

OK.

OK, I’ll talk to Nicole, but I just– not today. Not with her daughter in a coma, not knowing if she’s ever gonna come out of it. You understand, don’t you?

Yeah, sure.

Theresa, be good to yourself. You’re under a tremendous amount of stress right now. And look, I know it can be hard to find faith in the midst of all this chaos, but… there’s something that I brought for you aside from– aside from a hug. Grandma Caroline, she gave this to me when I became a priest. And we know how much her faith had gotten her through some very difficult times, how it helped us all. I want you to hold on to this.

Thank you. That really–that– that really means a lot. Thank you.

There’s no catch. I’ve been behind bars many times, as you know. And I–I don’t wish incarceration on my worst enemy, let alone my daughter’s brother who she adores.

Who are you, and what have you done with Kristen DiMera?

Brady, I mean, this situation is terrible for everyone, I mean, Tate, Holly, Rachel. I really have no interest in making it any worse.

Thank you. I mean it. Thank you. Feel–feel really bad about letting– letting Rachel down today. I’ve been waiting to see her. I’ve been waiting to see her, and I blew it, right?

Yeah, well, these were an extreme circumstance. It’s clearly unexpected, Brady.

Do you think you can give me a chance to make it up to her, please?

You know… she’s been having bad dreams. She woke up the other night crying because she had dreamed that you were dead. So…

What?

Yeah, I mean, it doesn’t take a shrink to know that she misses you, Brady.

I miss her too. I miss her a lot, Kristen.

I know you do. I know you do. So yes. Hey, yes. You can still see her and make it up to her. But, if you disappoint her again, Brady, I swear, I swear to you, you will have to pay. You’ll have to pay.

No, I don’t know that place.

No? I thought I saw a spark of recognition when you heard the name. Are you certain you have never been to Aria?

[chuckles] It is a magnificent little enclave, marvelous food, stupendous architecture, and only a few miles from–

Yeah, whatever. Whatever, OK? Look. I’ve been all over the world, mostly in my younger days when I was in the Merchant Marine. And maybe I stopped by that place in Greece at some point. I really don’t remember. But it’s none of your damn business anyway, is it?

There is no reason for you to get upset. If you would rather not discuss it, that’s fine by me.

He’d rather not discuss what? What are you driving at?

He’s not driving at anything, John. He’s just trying to stall. Now, look, maybe you want to sit around here all night and discuss your beloved homeland, but that’s not gonna happen, because you’re going back. You’re going back to Greece, and if you don’t go back of your own free will, you’re gonna end up in a place a lot less idyllic than your beloved Aria. You got that?

You seem quite rattled, Mr. Johnson.

Oh, no. I’m not rattled.

[dramatic music] I’m pissed! Because I’m looking at the devious son of a bitch who took advantage of a woman who I consider family. Now, you were warned to get the hell out of Salem. But you ignored that warning by showing your face in public. So you either leave this town of your own free will, or you will be forcibly exiled, courtesy of the ISA. Can do it the easy way or the hard way. Up to you.

[door slams]

Is everything OK here?

Thank you for talking me off the ledge, Mel.

No offense, Sloan, but you still look like you’re on the ledge. So tell me the truth. You’re not gonna change your mind and blow our covers about this baby, are you?

[door clicks open]

Hey. What’s going on?

Oh. And you’re back. Well, Melinda was just here visiting her godson.

Her godson?

I mean, I know we didn’t discuss it, but if it wasn’t for Melinda, I mean, we wouldn’t even have our precious little angel, everything that she’s done for us.

Yeah, that’s very true. We are forever in your debt, Melinda.

Great, so when is the christening? I just want to make sure that I put it on my calendar.

Well, as soon as we lock down a date, you’ll be the first to know.

Great.

Yeah. Oh, and, Sloan…

Mm-hmm?

Remember what we talked about earlier. You know, about babyproofing this place. You want to keep that gorgeous baby boy of yours safe, don’t you?

Yes. Of course I do. We both do.

[laughs]

Good to know. See you.

So glad you’re back.

Then why do you seem upset?

There she is, the Kristen DiMera that I know and–

And despise.

Oh, God. You’ve always had a knack for completing my sentences, don’t you?

I have, haven’t I?

Mm-hmm.

And I got to say, giving you another chance and allowing you to make it up to Rachel, hmm, even though you did stand us both up today, I mean, that surprises me as much as it did you.

Really?

Yeah, really, because I had a lot more yelling planned. I was gonna give you holy hell tonight.

Oh, damn, you must be– you must be disappointed that it took a turn.

Mm-hmm.

Are you?

Yes, I am, a little bit. Yeah.

[laughs] You know, because yelling gets my frustration out.

Right, right.

[laughs]

Well, hey, if it’s therapeutic for you, why don’t you just yell away? Come on, give it to me.

Oh. Yeah. No. See, it won’t work because you just told me…

I told you…

To do it.

To do it.

Yeah.

I’ll tell you what, why don’t we wait a minute? And I’m sure I’ll say something that’ll trigger you, and you’ll get fired up, and then you can just yell at me to your heart’s content. How about that?

[laughs]

Made you a sandwich. Are you praying?

Shh.

Sorry.

Amen. OK, I’m done.

Wow. I didn’t know you were into all the religious stuff.

Yeah, well, I might not be the epitome of a good Catholic, but it is my faith still, Alex.

Hmm. That’s cool.

Really–really think so?

Here’s what I think. I think you look very sexy when you pray.

What the hell are you doing?

[inhales sharply, clears throat]

Bad timing.

Yeah, kinda.

Yeah. OK. Yeah, I’m sorry. I– Theresa, I just wanted to try to make you feel better the best way I know how.

Yeah, well, the best way that you know how is kind of, like, totally inappropriate, Alex.

OK, OK, I get it. You’re right. You’re absolutely right. And just so you know, I am fully aware that for most of our relationship, it has been primarily focused on the physical. But I need you to know that that’s not just what I’m all about. I just want to be there for you emotionally too. Whatever you need.

[dramatic music]

Wow, I wasn’t expecting that. And that really means a lot to me. And… I’m sorry I snapped at you.

It’s OK. I get it. I clearly didn’t read the room or whatever. Forgive me.

[laughs] Well, you’re reading the room now.

Hmm. Come here.

[sighs] You know, it’s crazy how… life throws together certain people just at the right time when you need them.

Yeah.

Like you and me. I’m very grateful to have met you, Theresa.

Me too.

No, I’m OK. It’s just, there’s a lot going on right now, you know? Fussy baby, the work that never ends– and it just takes it all out of me.

I understand. Hey, how about I make you dinner?

Yeah, I would like that. I haven’t even had a chance to think about food today– Jude fussing, and then Melinda stopped by.

All right, you know what? Don’t say any more. I’m on it, all right? You just relax.

[sighs]

OK, well, I’ll get in touch to set up a date for you and Rachel. And we’ll figure out a way for you two to make up for lost time.

Kristen, thank you. Really, I–I missed her a lot. The holidays were–

[sighs] Were pretty rough. It’s one thing just to talk to her, but to not see her, it’s hard. I heard she had a really good Christmas, though, with the exception of missing her dad.

Yeah. I mean, she and I had a wonderful Christmas.

[laughs] I spoiled her rotten. Yeah, I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you.

No.

No, I got her these Taylor Swift earbuds, you know, for her tablet.

Yeah?

Yeah. And she was so excited, she just popped them in. And she then fiddled around to find her favorite song, which was “Karma.”

Of course.

[laughs] Oh, Brady, she was so adorable. I mean, she was just dancing around the room, and I mean, and she’s such a great dancer. I took this really sweet short video of her, and I’ll send it to you, all right?

I’d like– I’d like to see it.

Yeah.

I don’t just want to see a video, Kristen, though, of my daughter. I want–I want to see her. I need to see her. I want to see her face. I want to see her smile. I want to hear her laugh. It’s just– it’s just not the same. I feel like I’ve let her down so much, you know? Now I’ve let my boy down. I’m letting my kids down over and over and over again.

Hey, hey.

Don’t want to do it anymore.

I know. But Rachel and Tate, they love you. That’s not gonna change, Brady. And you will get through this, sweetheart. Hey, you’ll get through this because you always do. And you’ll be there for them because that’s just who you are. Come here.

Ah, you must be the renowned Dr. Marlena Evans. I have heard so much about you.

Likewise. But I’m surprised to see you here.

I was just leaving. Suddenly, I’ve lost my taste for clam chowder. Too fishy.

[laughs] Will you excuse me? Have a nice evening. Oh, and, gentlemen, I will consider your kind words and thoughtful request. You can be sure of it. I saw that look on your face, Mr. Steve Johnson. You know only too well about that precious place on Earth, my special Aria. Could it really be? After so many long years?

[chuckles]

What was that all about? I thought Konstantin was leaving Salem. I thought he was gone already.

Well, that’s what we thought too.

But he will be gone soon and for good. You can count on that.

Update written by Joseph

Sloan is at home, on the phone with Eric. She asks when to expect him home so she can make dinner plans. Eric is at the hospital and responds that he’s sorry but he won’t be home in time for dinner as he has to stop by and see Theresa. Sloan asks how things are going. Eric informs her that Tate was arrested for supplying the drugs to Holly and Theresa must be going out of her mind. Sloan asks how Holly is doing. Eric reveals that she had a seizure while he was visiting. Eric says he has to go but he’ll be home as soon as he can. Sloan tells him they are doing fine. Eric says he loves her and hangs up.

Theresa paces at home and complains to Alex about Tate being tried as an adult. Alex feels there has to be something he can do. Theresa believes they have done everything and complains that it’s not right or fair as Alex hugs her.

Brady goes home where Marlena asks how it went and assumes it must have been so tough. Brady confirms that it was and that he can’t even see Tate until tomorrow morning because he’s in holding. Brady knows Tate is scared. Marlena tells him that she’s so sorry. Brady says he tried everything he could to help him but nothing helped and that he tried to take the fall but it only made it worse. Brady declares that he’s the worst father on the planet.

John and Steve sit together at the Brady Pub as John complains about Tate being in a holding cell and being tried as an adult, all because EJ has gone off the deep end. John calls it an abuse of power and it’s killing him to watch Brady go through this. Steve encourages that John is obviously there for him and that’s all he can do right now.

Konstantin sits in his room at the Kiriakis Mansion and pulls out some papers, wondering if this could be the man. Konstantin says he was supposed to be dead, then decides he needs to do more digging as he sits with his laptop.

Melinda goes to Sloan’s apartment. Sloan thanks her for coming so quickly. Melinda says her message had her worried and asks what’s going on. Sloan tells her that she can’t take this anymore as it’s Nicole and it’s too much. Melinda encourages her to breathe and calm down. Melinda asks what about Nicole. Sloan responds that there is a real possibility that Nicole may now lose her surviving child to a drug overdose which means she will have lost two children in weeks, leaving her childless. Sloan declares that the guilt is eating her alive and she can’t keep living in this deception so they have to do something. Melinda questions what she is suggesting. Sloan responds that they have to give the baby back.

Alex asks if Theresa has considered reaching out to her dad since he’s the head of the ISA and maybe he could help Tate. Theresa says she can’t get ahold of him as he’s on some secret mission. Alex asks about her brother since he was in town recently. Theresa argues that Andrew wouldn’t pull any strings to help and probably thinks Tate is a big screw up like her. Alex encourages while Theresa says he doesn’t know about all the stuff she’s done in the past and recently. Alex questions what kind of stuff she’s done recently. Theresa thinks back to her and Konstantin’s plan to make Alex the son of Victor instead of Xander. Alex asks her again what kind of things she’s done recently. Theresa claims just the usual and calls herself a colossal screw up. Eric then shows up at the door. Theresa asks if he came to tell her what a bad parent she is and that it’s Tate’s fault. Theresa talks about beating herself up. Eric informs her that he stopped by to give her a hug.

Marlena argues that Brady is not a bad father. Brady brings up Tate being kicked out of boarding school, so he brought him here to straighten him out but it went from bad to worse. Brady feels if he didn’t bring Tate to Salem, none of this would’ve happened. Brady wonders if he was being selfish in bringing him back. Brady adds that with everything going on with his son, he’s still lost custody of his daughter as well. Marlena encourages that could turn around and points out that he didn’t force Tate as he wanted to stay in Salem. Marlena says they can’t always make their children do what they would like, but when their children suffer, they suffer. Marlena adds that they have to let them make choices and they learn from the consequences, the hard way. Brady thanks Marlena for being there for him and Tate. Marlena mentions going to meet John and Steve at the Pub for supper, so she invites Brady to join them which he accepts. Kristen then shows up at the door. Marlena asks what she wants. Kristen responds that she’s here for Brady.

Konstantin walks past the Brady Pub and sees a message on his phone that Maggie went to see Holly at the hospital. Konstantin says he should stop by and bring her some flowers. Konstantin then looks in the window of the Pub and sees John and Steve.

Steve asks John if there’s any way to get through to EJ before he throws the book at Tate. John doubts it since he obviously isn’t thinking rationally as it’s all about revenge and using Tate as a scapegoat for his misery. John says all they can hope for is that Holly pulls through, remembers what happened that night and sets the record straight. Konstantin then enters the Pub, shocking Steve and John. Konstantin guesses they are not too pleased to see him which Steve confirms. Steve questions what he’s still doing in Salem. Konstantin tells them that they blew it and their plan to run him out of town was a miserable failure. John calls him a fool for walking around in public, unless he wanted them to find him. Konstantin claims he just came for Brady Pub chowder. Steve tells him to turn around and get the hell out, then they will be right behind him to escort him to the airport. Konstantin declares that he’s not leaving anytime in the near future and the only way he will be gone from Salem is if they kidnap him again or murder him. Konstantin remarks that he wouldn’t put it past them.

Melinda questions Sloan suggesting giving the baby back to Nicole and argues that they would be on the hook for a very big crime. Sloan says she’ll represent herself and plead insanity if she has to. Melinda argues that she’s not thinking straight, reminding her that EJ is the district attorney and he would nail them to the wall for kidnapping. Melinda feels they would be risking everything and their lives would be over. Melinda brings up what EJ is doing to Tate and warns her to think about what he would do to them. Melinda declares that they would spend the rest of their days in prison and asks if that’s what Sloan wants.

Eric asks how Theresa is holding up. Theresa admits not very well and asks if he’s been to see Holly and Nicole. Eric confirms that he just came from the hospital and nothing’s changed in Holly’s condition so all they can do is pray. Eric states that no matter what, he’ll always love Tate and Holly as he could never judge either of them. Theresa asks if he would judge her. Eric brings up how he drove drunk 8 years ago and killed Holly’s father. Eric states that right now, Holly, Theresa, and Tate all need compassion and nobody knows that better than he does.

Kristen yells at Brady, asking where he’s been. Brady says it’s been a long night. Kristen reminds him that he was supposed to see his daughter an hour ago. Brady admits he forgot. Kristen calls it unbelievable and complains that he badgered her for weeks about seeing her and when she finally agrees, he stands up his own daughter. Brady asks her to let him explain. Kristen remarks that she would love to hear why he left his daughter in tears. Kristen then asks where the hell Brady has been and warns that it better be damn good.

Konstantin informs John that one’s past cannot be swept under the rug so easily. Konstantin brings up that Steve kidnapped him while John was lurking in the corner like an assassin. Konstantin claims his hands are clean and asks if John can say the same. John warns that he could make one call to the ISA and Konstantin will wake up on an island, permanently. Steve adds that he’ll have no way out. John warns Konstantin about running his mouth. Konstantin says an island sounds ideal for him to start a new life, just like John has. Konstantin says it would remind him of his home in Aria, then asks if Steve knows the place.

Melinda talks about Holly’s overdose being a shock but says it’s not like Sloan to be in such a tailspin. Sloan complains about balancing parenting, work, and the constant feeling of living in guilt. Sloan brings up the expenses as she reveals that she’s being blackmailed by Leo Stark, who knows that Jude is Nicole’s baby. Melinda asks how he could know that since Dimitri is in a super max prison, then realizes that Dimitri must have told him before being transferred. Sloan adds that it’s much worse since Leo knows that she had a hand in having Dimitri transferred to the super max prison and he’s out for revenge. Melinda hopes that Sloan did not mention her and that she’s not compromised in this. Sloan assures that Leo has no idea of her involvement. Sloan complains that Leo has been draining her of everything. Sloan says she was able to reel in his spending but doesn’t know how long that will last or what he’s going to demand next.

Eric tells Theresa about the tremendous guilt he felt and how he went to prison for his crime. Eric talks about the shame he felt but he had to forgive himself. Theresa argues that Tate’s situation is different because he’s innocent and Holly chose to take the drugs herself. Eric says regardless, they are all hurting and if there’s anything he can do to help, he’s there for her. Theresa responds that there actually may be something he can do.

Marlena tells Kristen that there is a lot going on with the family right now and asks her to listen to Brady. Brady tells Marlena that he can handle this and that she can go on to have a meal with John while he will hopefully join them later. Marlena asks Kristen to tell Rachel that her grandparents miss her as she then exits. Brady tells Kristen that he wouldn’t miss a moment with his daughter without a really good reason. Brady then reveals that Tate is in jail. Kristen questions what he did. Brady responds that he didn’t do anything but he went to a New Year’s Eve party with Holly, who had drugs on her to his surprise. Brady then informs Kristen that Holly overdosed at the Bistro and is currently on life support in a coma. Kristen is surprised and says she’s sorry. Brady adds that to make matters worse, EJ is on the warpath and thinks it’s all Tate’s fault. Brady points out that EJ revoked Tate’s bail so Tate is in a jail cell and is going to be tried as an adult. Kristen admits she had no idea this was happening since she and Rachel have been out of town. Brady doesn’t know what he’s going to say to their daughter as he has to tell her that he stood her up, forgot he was going to see her, and her brother is in jail. Kristen decides that she will break the news to her and explain everything, so he doesn’t have to worry about it. Brady questions Kristen being kind to him and wants to know what the catch is.

Melinda asks why Sloan didn’t tell her that Leo was blackmailing her and bleeding her dry. Sloan argues that she had a lot on her mind, like Nicole kidnapping her son. Melinda thought it was an innocent mix-up but Sloan insists that Nicole planned it and had no intention of bringing the baby back until EJ convinced her, but then Eric convinced her to cover up for Nicole because she has a conscience, so she told the police that they asked Nicole to babysit. Sloan states that she did it for Eric. Sloan wishes she would’ve just violated her conscience and went with her gut, because she can’t stand seeing Nicole out and that she helped her. Melinda questions why she’s feeling sorry for her then. Melinda acknowledges that it’s awful that Nicole might lose her daughter and no one knows that more than her, but Sloan had nothing to do with Holly’s overdose. Melinda urges her to stay the course as she has everything she ever wanted so she shouldn’t blow it now for either of them.

Eric asks Theresa what he can do. Theresa asks him to speak to Nicole and plead Tate’s case by telling her that would never try to hurt Holly so maybe Nicole will get EJ to back off a bit and listen to reason. Eric agrees to talk to Nicole but says not today while Holly is in a coma and they don’t know if she’ll ever come out of it. Theresa says she understands. Eric tells her to be good to herself. Eric knows it can be hard to find faith in the chaos so he reveals that he brought Grandma Caroline’s rosary that she gave him when he became a priest. Eric says it’s gotten through tough times so he wants her to hold on to it. Theresa thanks him and says it means a lot.

Kristen tells Brady that there’s no catch as she’s been behind bars many times and she doesn’t wish that on her worst enemy, let alone her daughter’s brother. Brady continues to question her. Kristen calls the situation terrible for everyone, so she really has no interest in making it any worse. Brady thanks her as he feels really bad about letting Rachel down since he’s been waiting to see her and he blew it. Kristen understands it was an extreme circumstance that was unexpected. Brady asks for the chance to make it up to Rachel. Kristen informs him that Rachel has been having bad dreams and woke up crying one night because she dreamt that Brady was dead. Kristen acknowledges that Rachel misses him. Brady responds that he misses her too. Kristen says he can still see her and make it up to her, but warns that if he disappoints her again, she swears he will have to pay.

Steve tells Konstantin that he doesn’t know Aria. Konstantin thought he recognized the name and asks if he’s certain that he’s never been there. Steve says he’s been all over the world, so maybe he stopped by at some point but he doesn’t remember. Steve adds that it’s none of his damn business anyway. Konstantin says there’s no reason to get upset if he doesn’t want to discuss it. John questions what he’s driving at. Steve accuses him of just trying to stall. Steve tells Konstantin that he’s going back to Greece and warns that if he doesn’t go back on his own, he’ll end up in a place a lot less ideal. Konstantin notes that Steve seems quite rattled. Steve admits he’s pissed because he’s looking at the devious son of a bitch who took advantage of Maggie. Steve reminds him that he was warned to leave Salem but he ignored that, so he can either leave on his own or he will be forcibly exiled courtesy of the ISA. Steve declares that they can do it the easy way or the hard way and it’s up to him. Marlena arrives and asks if everything is okay here.

Sloan thanks Melinda for talking her off the ledge. Melinda worries that she’s still on the ledge and asks if she’s not going to change her mind and blow their covers about the baby. Eric then comes home and asks what’s going on. Sloan says that Melinda was just visiting her Godson which Eric questions. Sloan knows they haven’t discussed it but says they wouldn’t have Jude if not for Melinda. Eric agrees and tells Melinda that they are forever in her debt. Melinda asks when the Christening is. Sloan says as soon as they lock down a date, she will be the first to know. Melinda reminds Sloan what they talked about earlier about baby-proofing the place to keep him safe. Melinda then exits. Sloan tells Eric that she’s so glad he’s back. Eric asks why she seems upset then.

Brady says there’s the Kristen DiMera he knows and despises. Kristen says giving him another chance to make it up to Rachel even though he stood them up surprises her as much as it did him, because she had a lot more yelling planned. Brady guesses she must be disappointed. Kristen admits that she is a little bit because yelling gets her frustration out. Brady tells her to just yell away if it’s therapeutic for her. Kristen says it won’t work since he told her to. Brady feels they can wait a few and he’ll say something else to trigger her and then she can yell at him to her heart’s content.

Alex makes Theresa a sandwich and then sees that she is praying. Alex comments that he didn’t know she was in to all the religious stuff. Theresa says she might not be a good Catholic but it’s still her faith. Alex calls it cool. Theresa questions if he really thinks so. Alex responds that he thinks she looks very sexy when she prays. Alex tries to kiss her but Theresa questions what the hell he is doing. Alex admits that was bad timing and apologizes as he just wanted to try to make her feel better the best way he knows how. Theresa calls that totally inappropriate. Alex agrees and says he’s fully aware that most of their relationship has been focused primarily on the physical, but that’s not what he’s all about. Alex wants to be there for her emotionally too for whatever she needs. Theresa admits she wasn’t expecting that and says it means a lot to her. Theresa apologizes for snapping at him. Alex says he gets it and asks her to forgive him. Alex holds her and says it’s crazy how life throws together certain people just at the right time when you need them. Alex declares that he’s very grateful to have met Theresa.

Sloan tells Eric that she’s okay and it’s just that there is a lot going on right now with the baby and the work that never ends and it takes a little out of her. Eric understands and offers to make her dinner which she accepts. Eric tells her to just relax and goes to prepare.

Kristen tells Brady that she’ll be in touch to set up a day for he and Rachel so they can make up for lost time. Brady thanks her as he missed Rachel a lot and admits the holidays were pretty rough not seeing her. Brady mentions hearing that she had a really good Christmas though which Kristen confirms. Kristen mentions getting Rachel some Taylor Swift ear buds and that “Karma” is her favorite song. Kristen tells Brady about Rachel dancing around the room and says she will send him a video. Brady talks about needing to see Rachel as it’s just not the same and he feels like he’s let her down so much while now he’s let Tate down. Brady cries that he’s let his kids down over and over and he doesn’t want to do it anymore. Kristen encourages that they love him and that won’t change and he’ll get through this like he always does. Kristen says he will be there for his kids because that’s just who he is as she hugs Brady.

Konstantin acknowledges Marlena and says he’s heard so much about her. Marlena is surprised to see him. Konstantin says he was just leaving as he suddenly lost his taste for clam chowder. Konstantin tells them to have a nice evening and mocks that he will consider their kind words and thoughtful request as he exits the Pub. Konstantin remarks to himself that he saw the look on Steve’s face so he knows all too well about Aria in Greece. Konstantin wonders if it could really be after so many long years.

Marlena asks what that was all about as she thought Konstantin was already gone from Salem. John says they thought so too. Steve responds that he will be gone soon, for good, and they can count on that.

At the DiMera Mansion, Stefan is on the phone with Gabi. Stefan says he’s sorry that she’s in so much pain. Stefan mentions that he planned to come visit her today but there was a fight in the prison so they put it on lockdown. Stefan assures that he will come see her soon and that they will have an important talk.

Chad goes to the Spectator where Everett is working. Everett says it might be midnight until he finishes and that he’s not sure he made any progress, but mentions a brief conversation with Chad’s brothers, EJ and Stefan as he found them huddled together at the loading dock behind the Bistro and it sounded like they were arguing. Everett says he has no idea what they were discussing but they kind of clammed up when they saw him and the fact that they were at the exact spot where Holly overdosed, it kind of aroused his suspicion.

Maggie joins Nicole in Holly’s hospital room and tells her that she’s terribly sorry.

Ava goes home to Tripp at the apartment. Ava notices Wendy’s suitcase is gone. Tripp confirms that she’s on her way to the airport. Ava says that’s too bad as she hoped to say goodbye to her. Tripp notes that Wendy left behind her favorite scarf. Ava points out that he can bring it to her when he joins her, but Tripp reveals that he’s not going and he’s decided not to move to China. Tripp assures that Wendy understands that he is going to be here for Ava. Ava tells him no but Tripp says he knows she said nothing is going on at the Bistro but he’s not convinced. Tripp tells Ava that he’s worried about her.

Stefan tells Gabi that this is not the time to have this talk when she’s in so much pain and that it needs to be face to face, but promises that it will be soon as he hangs up.

Maggie gives Nicole a blanket that she knitted. Maggie talks about knitting again since Victor passed and she’s sometimes unable to sleep. Nicole thanks her and assures that Holly will love it. Maggie says her heart aches for them and praises Holly. Maggie talks about Holly reminding her of her father Daniel, who they lost too soon. Maggie encourages that Holly is strong and will survive this. Nicole says she will never feel more grateful than she already does for Holly because they’ve recently been reminded of just how fragile life is. Nicole declares that they have to pay attention to the people they love and never take them for granted as Maggie hugs her.

Everett tells Chad that he found out in his research that EJ apparently has more than dabbled in the drug trade in recent years. Chad confirms that is in fact what almost got him killed but questions EJ getting involved in drugs again, pointing out that he seems to have gotten his act together and asks why else the mayor would make him district attorney. Everett says he hears that but from what he’s dug up so far, Salem’s drug central seems to be right behind the Bistro which Stefan owns. Chad feels selling drugs doesn’t seem to be Stefan’s thing either since he doesn’t need the money. Everett argues that money is not everybody’s motivation.

Ava reminds Tripp that she told him already there is nothing going on at the Bistro or for him to worry about but if he’s determined to stay in Salem and give up on the woman he loves, she can’t stop him. Ava says she is tired and going to bed but Tripp says not until she tells him why she was so happy that he was moving to Hong Kong. Ava questions if a mother can’t be happy for her son. Ava says that Wendy seems like a great girl and they were crazy about each other. Tripp argues that the Ava he knows would have tried to talk her son out of moving halfway across the world. Ava feels that would be selfish. Tripp insists that Ava wanted him out of the way of danger. Ava asks why he would stay if that’s the case. Tripp responds that he’s not going to walk away when she needs him. Tripp declares that she is his mother and he feels responsible for keeping her safe, so nothing and no one is going to keep him from doing that. Wendy then returns to the apartment, surprising them.

Everett tells Chad that it just struck him as strange that Stefan was at the loading docks since there weren’t any deliveries and wonders why he was with EJ. Everett asks if Chad has any thoughts on that. Chad says not at the moment but it’s hard for him to believe that his brothers are pedaling drugs. Stephanie arrives and greets them. Stephanie mentions not knowing Chad would be there but that she and Everett are having a PR meeting to focus on getting more eyes online. Chad says he has plans anyways and tells Everett to fill him in tomorrow as he then exits. Everett tells Stephanie that he’s sorry if it feels awkward. Stephanie assures that she and Chad are fine and have moved on.

Tripp hugs Wendy and questions what she’s doing here. Wendy explains that she got all the way to the gate and was looking at photos of them on her phone and she realized that she couldn’t go without him, so she’s staying in Salem if he hasn’t found another roommate. Tripp tells her that she makes him so happy and he loves her so much as he kisses her. Ava decides she will leave as she understands they thought they would be apart but now they are together. Ava says she is happy for them and wishes she wasn’t here to intrude on their moment. Ava adds that she will give them time alone. Tripp tells Ava that they will talk soon. Ava wishes them a Happy New Year and exits. Tripp tells Wendy how happy that she’s made him but asks about her parents and if she’s sure about this. Wendy assures that she belongs here with him.

Nicole brings up Maggie being an AA sponsor for years, so she wonders if Maggie saw any signs that Holly was having any issues. Maggie confirms that she didn’t but notes that addicts are really good at hiding the disease. Maggie adds that Holly might not be an addict and may have just been experimenting with a one time thing. Nicole calls it so sad, pointing out that now Tate has been arrested when they were two young people with their whole lives ahead of them. Maggie brings up EJ thinking Tate is responsible for supplying Holly with the drugs. Maggie asks if Nicole thinks that Tate is the one to blame.

Ava goes to the DiMera Mansion and greets Stefan, who says he wasn’t expecting her. Ava says she didn’t have anywhere else to go and asks if anything has changed with Holly. Stefan says he checked but no, she’s still in a coma. Stefan offers her a drink which Ava accepts, bringing up that Tripp and Wendy have decided not to move to Hong Kong so she has to keep an eye on them and be very careful about everything she says and does. Chad then walks in and apologizes for interrupting. Chad feels they seem surprised to see him. Stefan says he’s just not used to Chad coming around much since moving in with Doug and Julie. Chad reminds him that he still has his key and that Charlotte thought she left one of her favorite dolls. Chad asks what Ava is doing there.

Stephanie and Everett eat together at the Spectator office. They talk about their past. Stephanie says she admired how passionate he was about his job. Everett regrets the nights they missed together.

Wendy repeats to Tripp that this is where she belongs, with him and questions him not saying anything. Tripp says he already told her how happy he is that she decided to come back. Wendy argues that she can tell something is bothering him. Tripp admits that as thrilled and relieved as he is that she’s not moving 8000 miles away, he also feels really guilty and questions why his family is more important than her family and why him wanting to be here for his mom is more important than Wendy being there for her parents. Wendy insists that her parents have a whole village and she will still visit as often as she can. Wendy says that she is their only child now but they have aunts, uncles, and cousins while Ava only has Tripp. Wendy asks Tripp not to feel guilty because this is her choice and she knows it’s the right one. Tripp is so glad she feels that way but he can’t stop worrying about so many things. Tripp wishes them being together here was simpler. Wendy knows that he was excited and happy when she first came back, but now it seems that he’s having some sort of delayed reaction. Wendy tells him to just say if he’s disappointed that she’s coming back and questions if he was relieved that she was moving to Hong Kong.

Nicole tells Maggie that she doesn’t blame Tate as he’s just a kid. Nicole says she blames herself the most for not realizing that Holly was having issues and being too self-consumed intead of paying attention to her. Paulina arrives with an artificial plant. Paulina says she hopes she’s not interrupting but Abe told her that the room could use some perking up which Nicole thanks her for. Paulina says she’s so sorry this happened and assures that she’s doing everything she can to get the drugs under control so no more of their youth have to suffer. Nicole knows she’s doing everything she can. Paulina starts coughing so Maggie gets her some water.

Ava tells Chad that it’s lovely to see him too. Stefan states that he and Ava have things to go over for business. Chad questions why they are doing it here and who is running the Bistro. Ava argues that the staff are capable of covering for a few hours. Chad argues that it still doesn’t explain why Stefan is working in his family living room with Ava. Stefan asks Chad to just get what he came for because he and Ava have work to do which is none of his concern. Chad responds that it actually is because he owns the Spectator now and he’s tasked his star reporter with covering the drug trafficking in Salem. Chad asks Stefan if the DiMeras are involved in this and if they are investigating his own family.

Stephanie thinks it’s great that Chad is having Everett do this lead in to the drug trafficking in Salem. Everett says somebody has to get to the bottom of it and calls it such a tragedy. Everett adds that it’s triggering for him because he was covering the heroin epidemic in Seattle before they were together. Stephanie notes that he never told her about that. Everett reveals that a musician friend of his died from it and he was the one who found him, so it was shocking and traumatizing. Stephanie tells him that she’s so sorry. Everett guesses he didn’t tell her because he was determined to supress those feelings and memories to focus on the amazing woman that he was falling in love with.

Paulina tells Holly that they are all praying for her. The nurse comes in and says it’s time for Holly’s tests so Nicole says they will give her room and exits with Maggie and Paulina. Nicole thanks Paulina for coming. Paulina assures that she will get to the bottom of whoever is pedaling the drugs. Maggie reminds Paulina to take care of herself. Paulina thanks her for her concern and says she intends to make an appointment with her doctor today. Paulina tells Nicole that she’ll be praying for her and Holly. Nicole assures that she will be there for Holly with strength and optimism.

Tripp tells Wendy that he doesn’t want her to move to Hong Kong, especially without him. Wendy asks if it’s Ava that doesn’t want her there. Tripp assures that she loves her. Wendy asks if Ava keeps getting in to these messes to keep him in her clutches. Tripp calls that unfair. Wendy declares that she’s not letting anyone else dictate her decisions and that she’s staying whether he likes it or not. Tripp assures that he likes it a lot as they kiss.

Paulina tells Nicole and Maggie not to worry about her and to focus on Holly, assuring that she’ll be back soon. Nicole thanks her for coming again as she exits. Maggie comments that they all need to take care of themselves. Nicole insists that she will. The nurse comes over and says they can go back in so Nicole and Maggie head back to Holly’s room. Maggie encourages that Holly has so many people praying for her and for Tate as well.

Stefan tells Chad to save the questions for his star reporter since he will be showing up everywhere anyways. Chad feels that Everett doesn’t know how to read Stefan and Ava like he does. Chad brings up Ava’s well-documented history with the mafia where she learned drug trafficking. Ava says the same could be said about the DiMeras. Chad states that is why them working together makes him suspicious. Ava remarks that she just can’t stay away from DiMera men. Ava tells Stefan to just give it up because Chad’s on to them as she then grabs Stefan and kisses him.

Everett and Stephanie talk about being distractions for each other when they fell in love. Stephanie suggests drinking which Everett says he would love to do but thinks coffee is a better idea since he has to finish the job. Stephanie asks if he should put it off for tonight if it’s triggering him about his friend that overdosed. Everett assures that he can handle it, especially with her by his side.

Tripp asks Wendy if it’s settled then that she’s staying, which she confirms. Tripp asks if she’s told her family yet. Wendy admits she hasn’t and wouldn’t be surprised if her mom is waiting at the airport. Wendy decides there’s no time like the present and suggests Tripp leave the room for it, joking that he’ll still probably hear her mom sobbing all the way from Hong Kong.

Maggie tells Nicole that when Holly gets better, they should have a spa day. Maggie brings up Victor and gets emotional. Nicole declares that her New Year’s resolution is to spend more time with her daughter and she prays for the chance to make that stick.

Wendy calls her mom to tell her that she’s not coming. Wendy says she knows she promised, but sometimes promises can’t be followed. Wendy apologizes and says she will video call soon but her mom hangs up on her. Tripp guesses it didn’t go well which Wendy confirms and says she didn’t expect it to. Tripp hopes that deep down Wendy’s mom understands that she’s in love. Wendy states that her parents love each other but she’s not so sure they are in love. Tripp tells her that he’s very sure that just thinking about being separated from her and picturing her 8000 miles away to then her coming back in, he has no words to express how he’s feeling but Wendy encourages him to. Tripp tells Wendy that she lights up his life and worries about being corny but Wendy says it’s great. Tripp adds that she brightens every day and makes his heart skip beats. Tripp then tells Wendy that he’s more in love with her than ever. Wendy says he found all the right words. Tripp tells her that it’s her turn now. Wendy calls Tripp the man of her dreams and says she loves him with all her heart as they kiss.

Stephanie tells Everett that she might go to Seattle soon to visit her brother Joey. Stephanie asks if Everett will ever go back. Everett responds that he goes where the job takes him but he’s been thinking it’s time to put down some roots, so he doesn’t think he’d go back to Seattle unless there’s something to go back for. Stephanie points out the time and that he needs to file that piece tonight, so she’s going to get going. Stephanie says she will see him soon and then exits.

Ava informs Chad that she and Stefan are in a relationship. Chad responds that he’s not surprised and he doesn’t care. Chad warns Stefan that he hopes he’s not involved in the drug trade or else it will be a house of cards that comes crashing down around him. Chad then exits. Stefan questions Ava about what the hell that was. Ava tells him that they need to be the happy betrayers in front of Chad and Harris to keep them off their back. Stefan complains that he’s not comfortable with that. Ava tells him to get comfortable and that they need to do this if he’s interested in surviving. Stefan assures that he is interested so Ava tells him to get interested in this as she kisses him again.

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[dramatic music]

Hey, sweetheart.

[sighs] I’m so glad they finally put me through to you. Yeah, yeah, I heard that you’re still in the infirmary. I’m so sorry.

[sighs] I’m sorry you’re in so much pain. I– Listen, I– I want you to know that I planned on coming by earlier today, but I don’t know, I heard there was a fight in one of the common areas, and I guess they locked the place down for hours. I know. I know. I–I will come see you as soon as I can, and we will have…a good talk, an important talk.

[slurps]

Hey, boss.

Hey there.

Burning the midnight oil, I see.

Yeah. It actually might be midnight by the time I’m through all this.

Yeah? Making any progress?

You mean since I saw you this morning?

[sighs] I’m not sure yet. But I– I had a brief conversation with your brothers.

EJ and Stefan, I assume.

Yeah, yeah. I found them huddled together at the loading dock behind the Bistro. Sounded like they were arguing.

Eh, that’s not a surprise.

No, and I have no idea what they were discussing, honestly, and they sort of clammed up the minute they saw me, but… since they were at the exact spot that Holly Jonas had OD’d, it just definitely aroused my suspicion.

[monitor beeping]

Hi, darling.

Oh, Maggie, I’m so happy to see you.

Oh, I’ve wanted to come since I heard. I’m so terribly sorry, Nicole. And there she is, my precious granddaughter.

Hey, honey.

Mom, hey.

[sighs] So I see… Wendy’s suitcase is gone, huh?

Yeah, yeah, she’s on her way to the airport.

Oh, that’s too bad. I was hoping I could say goodbye to her.

[sighs] What’s that?

Oh, it’s Wendy’s favorite scarf, the one she loves to travel with. She left it behind, obviously.

OK, well, don’t be so mopey. You can bring it to her when you join her.

Yeah, Mom, I need to talk to you about that. I’m not going.

What?

I’ve decided I’m not moving to China. Wendy and I’ve already talked about this, and she understands. I want to be here for you.

Oh, Tripp, no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no.

Yes. OK, look, I know you said that there’s nothing going on at the Bistro, but I’m not convinced. OK, I– I’m worried about you, Mom.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

No, no. No, no, no, no, no. Honey, this is not the time to have this talk, not when you’re in so much pain, and… well, it needs to be face-to-face, all right? So we will talk soon, I promise. No, no, no, operator, operator, please just give me one more minute so I can tell my wife–

[dramatic music]

[phone beeps]

[sighs] That I love her.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

Our sweet girl. I brought you something.

[chuckles]

Oh. Oh, my goodness, Maggie, it’s– it’s beautiful. Did you–did you knit this yourself?

Yeah, I did.

[laughs] I started knitting again after Victor died. I’d crawl in bed at night, and–and I couldn’t sleep. So I thought, I have to do something to pass the time. So if you need a knit cap or a– a new sweater…

[laughter] Let me know.

OK.

I’m getting– I’m getting pretty good at it.

Wow. Thank you. Thank you so much. I know Holly is gonna love it.

[somber music]

Nicole.

[chuckles]

I’m–my heart– my heart aches for you and for your daughter and for my precious granddaughter, who brings so much– so much joy to us. She’s so like you.

Mm.

But she also reminds me– she reminds me of her father, our precious Daniel…

[sighs]

Who we lost too soon.

[sighs] So I know words are cold comfort right now, but Holly is–she’s young, and she’s strong-willed, and she’s gonna survive this. And with that strong will, she’s fighting very hard to come back to us. OK? And she will.

Yeah. Yeah, she will.

She will.

She has to. And when she does, Maggie, not–not–not a day will go by, not a minute…

Mm-hmm.

That I won’t feel even more grateful than I already do for the blessing of my wonderful little girl.

Mm.

Because…

[sniffles] More recently, I have– I have been reminded– and I know you have, too, Maggie– just how fragile life is. And we have to pay attention…

Mm-hmm.

To the people that we love and never, ever take them for granted.

No.

So one thing I found out in my research is that EJ apparently has more than dabbled in the drug trade in recent years.

[clears throat] Yeah, it is, in fact, what got him killed. Yeah. But EJ becoming a drug pusher again, I mean, I don’t know, it just seems to me like he’s gotten his act together lately. Why else would the mayor make him DA?

Yeah, yeah, I–I hear that. I hear that. But from what I’ve dug up so far, Salem’s drug central seems to be right behind the back alley of the Bistro, which your other brother owns.

Right.

[chuckles] Yeah, but selling drugs doesn’t seem to be Stefan’s thing either.

Why is that?

I mean, well, he doesn’t need the money, for starters.

No, totally. Obviously not. But money’s not everybody’s motivation.

[dramatic music]

Tripp, I told you already, there is nothing going on at the Bistro, and there’s nothing that you need to worry about, OK? But listen, if you are so determined to stay in Salem and let go of the woman that you love, I can’t do anything about it, OK? I am tired. I’m going to bed.

Not yet. No, not until you tell me why you seemed so happy that I was moving to Hong Kong.

Oh, my God, for God’s sake, can a mother not be happy for her son? Wendy seems like a great girl, OK, and you two are obviously crazy about each other, so–

Yeah, that’s true, that’s true, but the Ava Vitali that I know would have tried to talk her son out of moving halfway across the world.

Oh. Oh, so the Ava Vitali you know, she’s that selfish, huh? She’s that possessive?

OK, admit it, Mom, you wanted me to move halfway across the world so I would be out of danger here.

OK, well, if that’s what you think, then why would you stay?

Because I’m not gonna walk away from you when you need me. OK, you’re my mother. And not only do I love you; I feel responsible in keeping you safe, and nothing and no one is going to keep me from doing that.

Hi.

It just–it–it struck me as a bit strange, you know, that–that Stefan was at the loading docks. I mean, sure, you know, that’s where deliveries come in, but there weren’t any deliveries at that time. So what was he doing there? And why was he with EJ?

[dramatic music] Have any thoughts on that?

Not at the moment, no.

[slurps]

It’s just hard for me to believe that my brothers are peddling drugs.

Yeah.

Everett.

Hey. Hey, Steph.

Chad, hi.

Hi, Steph.

I’m just– I didn’t know you’d be here. Otherwise, I would have– I would have gotten enough for all of us from New China BBQ.

No worries.

Right. Well, Everett and I are just having a PR meeting, focusing on grabbing more eyes online.

If you want to hear about it, we could order more food.

No, it’s all good. I have plans. Thank you, though. You can fill me in tomorrow.

Sure.

Yeah?

Yeah.

Excuse me. Thanks.

Yeah, see you.

[sighs] Sorry about that.

Mm. What for?

Oh, just…if it was awkward.

Oh, not really. Chad and I, we’re fine now. We’ve spoken our truths and moved on.

If you say so.

I do.

OK.

[chuckles]

So why don’t you get the paper plates and I’ll unpack the food?

I am on it.

Wendy, what are you– what are– what are you doing here? Was your–was your– was your flight canceled?

No.

Delayed? What?

No, it wasn’t delayed either. Look, I made it past security. I got all the way to the gate, and then… well, I was looking at some photos on my phone, photos of me and you, and I realized… I couldn’t go without you. So I’m staying here in Salem… if you haven’t found another roommate, that is.

Wendy, you’ve made me so happy. I love you so much.

I love you too.

OK, I’m–I’m leaving.

Wait. Mom, wait.

Oh, my God, Ava, I’m so sorry. I didn’t–I didn’t even say hello to you.

Oh, no, honey, don’t even worry about it. I understand. You two thought you were gonna be apart, and now here you are together. And you both seem so happy, so I’m happy for you.

Thank you.

Yeah. So…yeah. You know, it’s just funny. I just wish that– I just wish that I hadn’t been here to intrude on this lovely moment you two are having. So I’m just gonna leave and give you two some time alone.

Hey, we’ll talk soon, OK? We need to.

Happy New Year.

Wendy, you have no idea how happy you’ve made me. But what about– what about your dad? What about your mom? Are you sure about this?

Yes, I’m sure. I belong here, Tripp, with you.

Maggie, you’ve been an AA sponsor for years now. And I mean, I was just wondering, did you–did you see any signs that Holly was having any issues?

No, I didn’t. But as you know, addicts are really good at hiding their disease. But, Nicole, Holly may not be an addict. I mean, it’s just possible that whatever drug she took, it was– it was experimentation, just a one-time thing.

Yeah.

Yeah.

It’s just, this– this is so sad.

Yeah.

Not just because of what happened to Holly, but now Tate’s been arrested. I mean, this is two young people that have their whole lives ahead of them.

Nicole, EJ believes that Tate was responsible for Holly’s OD. I mean, he did supply her with the drugs. But what about–what about you? Do you think that Tate is the one to blame?

[dramatic music]

Hey there.

Ava.

Harold let me in. I hope it’s OK.

Yeah, no, I just… wasn’t expecting you.

Yeah, well, didn’t really have anywhere else to go, quite honestly. So… anything change with Holly?

No. Checked. She’s still in a coma. Pour you one?

Yeah, I’ll definitely have a drink, especially after what Tripp just put me through.

Fill me in.

Oh, well, for starters– thanks–he decided not to move to Hong Kong.

What?

Yeah, so did his girlfriend. So not only do I have to keep an eye on both of them. I have to be very careful with everything I say and do.

[door clicks shut]

Chad.

Sorry–sorry for… interrupting.

Mm.

Hello, Ava.

Chad.

Seem kind of surprised to see me.

No, I’m just not used to you coming around here very much anymore, not since you moved in with Julie and Doug.

Right. Well, you know, still got my key.

[clears throat]

And Charlotte thought she–she forgot one of her favorite dolls in her old room, so I said I would come by and check out the closets and the–and the drawers. What are you doing here, Ava?

Yeah.

Mm.

Smells delicious.

Mm, yeah. This place has all your faves, including… watermelon mojitos.

Oh, you didn’t.

[chuckles]

You didn’t.

Mm-hmm.

You remembered.

Oh, yeah. We used to have them every Thursday night after pickleball…

Mm.

Except for the nights that you had to work late, which were usually four nights out of five.

I ever thank you for being so understanding about that?

Oh, no thanks were required. You’re passionate about your job. It’s one of the things I admired most about you.

Well, as much as I love my work, I– I regret all those missed nights together.

OK, then. Should we dive in while it’s all still hot?

Yeah, definitely.

[chuckles]

Did you hear me? I said this is where I belong, with you.

Of–of course I heard you.

Well, then why didn’t you say anything?

I–I already told you how happy I am that you decided to come back here.

Well, yeah, you did, but… Tripp, I know you, and I can tell that something’s bothering you.

OK. You’re right. Something is. It’s just… Wendy, as– as thrilled and relieved as I am that you’re not moving , miles away, I also feel really guilty. I mean, like, why is my family more important than yours? Why–why does me wanting to be closer to my mom take precedence over you being there for your parents?

Well, because… my parents, unlike your mom, Tripp, they have a whole village around them. And I’m still gonna try to visit them as often as I can. And yes, I’m their only child now, but… they have aunts and uncles and cousins popping out of the woodwork. Your mom only has you. Tripp… please don’t feel guilty. OK, this is my choice, and I know it’s the right one for me.

And I’m so glad you feel that way. It’s just… I–I can’t stop myself from worrying about so many things. I mean, I just–I just wish that it was simpler, us being together here.

Tripp… I know that you were excited and happy when I first came through that door and I told you I was staying. But now it seems like you’re having some kind of… delayed reaction. And if you are, just say it, OK? Just–just tell me that you’re disappointed that I’m coming back, that in your heart of hearts, you were relieved that I was on my way to Hong Kong, that you really want me to move there.

No, Maggie, I don’t blame Tate. He’s just a kid. But the person I blame the most is myself, I mean, for not realizing that Holly was having issues, being self-consumed too much of the time, feeling sorry for myself, and not paying attention to her.

[knock at door]

Paulina, hi.

Hope I’m not interrupting.

Oh, no.

Hi, Paulina.

Abe told me when he came by earlier that the room could use some perking up.

Oh. Well, that’s– that’s very sweet, Paulina, but Holly can’t have flowers in ICU.

Oh, I know that, which is why I got the very best artificial orchid money can buy.

Oh.

Oh, how thoughtful. And they look so real.

Yes, they do. Thank you, Paulina. I mean, they’re lovely.

Oh.

And they definitely perk up the room.

Oh. Oh. Maggie, Nicole, I’m– I’m so sorry this happened. Rest assured, I’m kicking every butt I can to get these drugs under control to make sure that no more of our sweet, innocent youth have to suffer from this terrible epidemic.

Yeah.

Thank you, Paulina. I know you’re doing everything you can.

Oh.

[coughs] Oh, excuse–

[coughing]

Paulina, you all right? I’ll get you some water.

Oh, my goodness.

[coughing]

Here you go.

Oh.

Here you go.

Ooh.

Here you go.

[slurps] Mm.

[coughing] Mm.

You OK?

Yeah, there.

All right.

All better.

OK. Aw.

OK.

Lovely to see you too, Chad.

[dramatic music]

But, Chad, Ava and I have some things to go over for business.

Yeah, and why are you doing it here? Who’s minding the Bistro?

The staff is capable of covering for a few hours.

Still doesn’t answer why you’re conducting business in my family’s living room with her, Stefan.

Chad, please, just get whatever it is you came to get. Ava and I have some work to do, and quite frankly, it’s none of your concern.

Actually, it is. You see, I run “The Spectator” now, and I’ve tasked my star reporter with writing an exposé on the drug trade here in Salem. Are the DiMeras involved in this, Stefan? Are we investigating my own family?

You know, I think it’s great that Chad is having you do this deep dive into the drug trade in Salem.

Yeah, yeah, definitely. I mean, somebody’s got to get to the bottom of it, right?

Mm-hmm.

Such a tragedy, isn’t it?

Mm.

Frankly, it’s–

[chuckles] What do you say nowadays? It’s triggering for me.

How so?

Well, before we were together, I was covering the heroin epidemic in Seattle.

You never told me about that.

I guess I didn’t really tell a lot of people about it, mainly because… this really good friend of mine died. He–he OD’d. And he was a musician, really talented pianist and a songwriter. Anyway, he was a great guy overall, and I was the one that found him. So it was a little shocking and a little…traumatizing.

Oh. Everett, I’m so sorry.

It’s OK. Why am I telling you this? I guess I didn’t tell you because I was determined during that time to– to suppress those feelings and those memories and focus on the amazing woman that I was falling in love with.

We’re all praying for you, you sweet girl, and sending white light and whatever other healing didgeridoohickeys we have.

[chuckles] Oh.

Mm-hmm.

It’s time for Holly’s bath.

Oh, right, of course. We’ll–we’ll give you some room.

Thanks, honey.

Thank you again, Paulina, for coming by.

And I will be back soon. But I do have to scoot right now, especially if we’re gonna get to the bottom of who’s peddling those drugs.

Before you leave, Paulina, please, be sure to take care of yourself.

Oh, and, well, thanks for your concern, Maggie. In fact, I intend to pop by today to see my doctor and make an appointment.

Oh, good.

And I’ll be praying for your little girl, Nicole, and for you, that you get through this with strength and optimism.

I know.

[sighs] And I will be there for her. I will, with strength and optimism.

Now you’re talking.

Wendy, of course I don’t want you to move to Hong Kong, especially without me. It’s just–

Just what? Is it Ava? Does she want me out of your life?

No, no, she loves you. She wanted me to go with you. You know that.

Or maybe she just keeps getting in these messes so she can keep you in her clutches.

That’s not fair.

Well, fair or unfair, just like you’re not letting your mom dictate your decisions, I’m not letting anyone dictate mine. I’m here to stay, whether you like it or not.

Oh, I like it. I like it a lot.

Be sure and tell your doctor all of your symptoms, Paulina.

Oh, don’t–don’t worry your pretty head about me. It’s that little angel in there you need to concentrate on. And I will– I will be back soon, and I’ll bring some artificial roses next time.

[laughter] Well, I’ll see you soon.

OK. Thank you for coming, Paulina.

She needs to take care of herself. We all do.

[sighs] I will, Maggie. It’s nothing a week of– or two of sleep won’t cure.

[both chuckle]

Bath’s all done. You can go back in now.

Oh, thanks, Ellen.

OK, here we go.

[dramatic music]

Hey, sweet girl. We’re back.

There are so many people who are praying for you, Holly. Praying for Tate as well.

Why don’t you save the questions for your star reporter, Chad? God knows he’s gonna be showing up everywhere like a bad penny anyway.

Well, he–he doesn’t know how to read the both of you quite like I do, does he?

Mm.

But what he does know, as do I, is your well-documented history with the Mafia, Ava, where I’m sure you learned the ins and outs of drug running right along with the ABCs.

Mm, well, some might say the same thing about the DiMeras.

Which is why the two of you in business together makes me just a tad bit suspicious, especially now that I’ve seen you all cozy together.

What can I say? Just can’t stay away from DiMera men. Let’s give it up. He’s onto us.

So I was a distraction, huh?

The best kind.

Maybe you were, too, for me, when we fell in love. Any chance you have some rum in that bottom drawer of yours for a top-off?

Ooh. I would…love to do that. But I think coffee is probably a better idea. Got to finish this exposé.

Maybe put it aside for tonight, you know, since it seems to be triggering, reminding you of your friend who OD’d.

I can handle it, especially with you by my side.

So it’s settled. You’re staying.

I’m staying.

Have you told your family yet?

No.

[sighs] I wouldn’t be surprised if my mom has been waiting at the airport since I bought my ticket.

OK, so–

There’s no time like the present.

Mm-mm.

You might want to go into the other room for this, although you’ll still probably hear my mom sobbing all the way from Hong Kong.

[sighs]

OK, now it’s perfect.

[both chuckle]

You know, I was thinking.

Hmm.

When Holly gets better and goes home from the hospital, I think the three of us, we should have a spa day– massages and facials, manicures and pedicures, you know.

Oh, and an icy plunge pool. Is that what they’re called?

[laughs]

I don’t know, but I think we’ll just let that one go. And we’ll just do all sorts of girly-like things.

Yeah.

Did you hear that… high tea is back at the Salem Inn?

[sighs] Yeah, I did, actually. EJ and I want to take Holly there. Oh, they have those scones with the clotted cream. So good.

You know, Victor– Victor, he loved high tea, too, especially the tiny little cucumber sandwiches.

[dramatic music]

We have to do that, Maggie.

Mm-hmm.

A lot more of that.

Yeah.

You know, the most important New Year’s resolution is for me to spend more time with my precious daughter. And I pray I have the chance to make that one stick.

[sighs]

[speaking Mandarin]

[sighs]

That didn’t go well, did it?

No. But I didn’t expect it to.

Deep down, maybe she understands. I mean, surely she must know what it feels like to be in love.

Or maybe not. I mean, I know my parents love each other, but… in love? I’m not so sure.

Well, here’s something that I am… very, very sure of.

And what’s that?

That just thinking about being separated from you for… God knows how long, picturing you , miles away, and then seeing you walk through that door and telling me that you were staying, there are no words, no words to express how that made me feel or how I’m feeling right now.

Come on, try to find the words.

OK, OK, way to– way to put the pressure on.

I’m waiting.

Mm-hmm. OK. Wendy Shin, you light up my life. Uh, that was a little too corny.

No, corny’s great. Keep going.

OK, OK.

[laughs]

All right. Well, Wendy Shin, you light up my life and not only brighten up every day and make my heart skip so many beats but also–

Also?

I am more in love with you than ever.

See? You found all the right words.

Your turn.

Oh, OK.

Mm-hmm. Tripp Johnson… you are the man of my dreams. And I love you with all my heart.

You know, I think I may go to Seattle soon to visit my brother.

Oh. How’s Joey doing?

He’s OK. Living in my old apartment.

Mm.

You think you’ll ever go back?

Well, you know me. I go where the job takes me, but… I don’t know, I’ve been thinking it’s time to put down some roots. So no, I don’t think I’ll go back to Seattle, not unless there’s something to go back for.

Look at the time.

Yeah.

Don’t you need to file that piece tonight?

I do.

Great. Then I’ll be going. See you soon.

Soon.

[clears throat]

Bye.

Bye.

[sighs]

Mm. Did we mention we’re in a relationship, Chad?

No, but I’m not surprised. Nor do I care. I hope you’re not involved with this drug trade, brother. Or it will be a house of cards that comes crashing down around you.

What the hell was that?

Oh, you know exactly what that was. If you don’t want to join your wife behind bars, then we need to be the happy betrayers in front of Chad and Harris so we can keep them off of our backs.

I’m not comfortable with that.

Oh, well, get comfortable, OK? Are you interested in survival? Because we need to do this if we’re gonna survive.

Of course I’m interested.

OK, good. Then get interested in this.

Days of Our Lives Update

Update written by Joseph

Sarah comes out of the spare bedroom at Xander’s apartment and finds Xander cooking. Xander tells her that he planned to surprise her with breakfast in bed, but notes that he would have knocked first as he wouldn’t just barge in while she was in bed. Sarah tells him that she wouldn’t have minded if he had done that.

Wendy packs her bags at home as Tripp comes home. Tripp apologizes for not making it home for New Year’s Eve as he got stuck at the hospital on a crazy night. Wendy tells him that they can make up for it in Hong Kong. Wendy talks about what a great time they are going to have and announces that she got a leave of absence from the police department since she hopes to come back someday, depending on her dad’s condition. Tripp asks how he’s holding up. Wendy says he’s still in rough shape, but her flight leaves tonight and then she’ll be there. Tripp knows her parents will be so happy to see her. Wendy responds that she’ll be so happy to welcome him to Hong Kong. Wendy asks if Tripp has made arrangements with the hospital to join her soon. Tripp reveals that he’s sorry but he can’t go.

At the police station, Brady tells Tate that he can’t wait to get him home. Justin returns and announces that he just got a call from the assistant district attorney. Rafe returns and announces that he just got a call from the judge, who has reversed his decision and revoked Tate’s bail. Rafe reveals that Tate’s not going anywhere as he has to take him back in to custody. Theresa argues against it while Brady questions how the judge could change his mind after just granting bail half an hour ago. Justin finishes a call and says he found out that EJ convinced the judge that Tate is a flight risk because of the family wealth. Brady argues that EJ probably owns the judge. Justin acknowledges that EJ holds a lot of sway. Theresa argues that this can’t be happening. Tate asks everyone to stop talking and just tell him what’s going to happen to him.

Xander and Sarah talk about Victoria sleeping through the night. Sarah thanks him for letting her stay the night. Xander talks about getting through the baby fever scare. Sarah says it all worked out which Xander credits her for. Xander comments that he ruined her New Year’s Eve plans as they flash back to taking care of Victoria and Sarah saying she’d rather be here with them to watching the fireworks together where they ended up kissing. Sarah tells Xander that she wouldn’t say it was ruined. Xander starts to apologize but Victoria wakes up crying. Xander says he’ll go check on her while telling Sarah to help herself to the food.

Wendy thought they had already decided and that Tripp wanted to go with her. Tripp says that was all before last night when Holly Jonas was brought in to the hospital after overdosing at the Bistro. Tripp explains that she was found on the loading dock, barely alive. Wendy asks if she’s going to be okay. Tripp says it’s too soon to tell but this isn’t exactly about Holly. Tripp informs her that he went to go check on Ava after he got off and she was acting really strange. Wendy feels it must have been traumatic for her to have someone overdose on her watch. Tripp feels it was more than that as he knows her mom and he knows when something is not right. Tripp says when Ava encouraged him to go to Hong Kong, he had the feeling that something was up with her but he doesn’t know what exactly. Tripp thinks something is going on that Ava doesn’t want him to know about which is why she was way too eager to have him 8000 miles away on another continent. Wendy says she doesn’t know Ava all that well but admits it seems out of character for her. Tripp insists that Ava is all about wanting to be close since he’s her only child now and making up for lost time. Tripp brings up that Ava used to be in the mob and he wants to think that she’s telling the truth when she adamantly denied being involved with drugs, but admits that he doesn’t believe her.

Brady tells Tate not to worry as they are never going to give up. Theresa argues that they can’t send her child to jail. Justin clarifies that it will be juvenile hall, not jail, and they will explore their options. Brady asks what options they have and asks if they can argue that EJ is a conflict of interest. Justin says he will file an appeal immediately and then they will explore every avenue. Alex asks if he can just pay double the bail amount and urges Justin to make the court system work that way since he’s been doing this a long time and knows judges. EJ arrives and greets them, so Alex, Justin, and Rafe have to hold Brady back. Brady asks EJ why he’s doing this to his son.

Wendy suggests Tripp get some sleep. Tripp says he’s not going to miss her leaving, noting that he’s already been up for 24 hours. Wendy asks if Tripp thinks his mom is back in the game. Tripp reiterates that he doesn’t want to think that but some things just don’t add up. Tripp brings up Ava suddenly breaking up with Harris, killing Gil right here in their apartment, and then out of nowhere she’s managing the Bistro with Stefan. Tripp says that Ava had an answer for everything as if she was prepared. Wendy understands why he’s so worried, especially given her history. Tripp says that Harris is not in Ava’s life anymore. Wendy understands that Ava needs Tripp now more than ever, so if he wasn’t here, no one would take care of her. Tripp says it hurts so much more that Wendy is being so understanding and he loves her for it. Wendy assures that she knows him and she loves him. Tripp says he’s so sorry because all of this is so unfair. Wendy admits she’s disappointed but says family is obviously very important to him and she respects him for that. Wendy says she has to take care of her parents now and she knows he feels the same about his mom, but now they have another issue. Tripp asks what this means for them.

Xander brings Victoria in to the living room as Sarah is finishing her breakfast. They joke about Xander’s pronunciation of the word “scone”. Sarah hopes Victoria gets Xander’s accent because it’s charming and she loves it, noting that Victoria is half Scottish. Xander hoped Victoria would take more after Sarah’s side of the family. Xander tells Sarah that he likes everything about her. Sarah thanks him and decides she should get dressed and pack up Victoria’s things since it’s her night with her. Sarah tells Xander that she’ll be out of his hair and he can have his apartment back as she goes to get dressed.

Rafe warns that Brady will just make things worse for Tate. EJ says to let him go as he’s curious to see how far Brady will take it, joking that if he assaults the district attorney then he and Tate can have father-son time in jail. Justin and Alex hold Brady back as Theresa tells Brady that they need him here with them and Justin advises him not to make things worse. Theresa doesn’t think things could get worse but EJ assures that they can. EJ brings up his family and Nicole being broken at Holly’s bedside. EJ talks about an innocent girl fighting for her life because she was pressured in to taking drugs by the son of drug addicts. Tate insists that’s not what happened and that he told Holly not to do it. EJ tells Tate to save it. EJ remarks that Tate is nearly of age and committed a crime that resulted in Holly’s condition. Theresa argues that Tate is innocent until proven guilty. EJ declares that Tate will be tried as an adult and held at the local jail with the other prisoners. Justin argues that EJ can’t charge Tate as an adult for possession because the law doesn’t support that. EJ responds that it could be manslaughter or attempted murder for pedaling drugs that may have killed his stepdaughter. Theresa tries to argue but Justin acknowledges that he can charge the minor as an adult if the crime is fitting. Theresa pleads with EJ that Tate is just a child and to have some compassion. Alex argues that they should’ve got a different lawyer and that Justin should’ve changed the venue. Justin tells Alex that he’s out of his element as you can’t change the venue until there’s a trial. Alex argues that he at least could’ve found a judge who isn’t under EJ’s thumb. EJ dares Alex to make accusations to his face. Alex gets in EJ’s face and threatens to rearrange his face. EJ points out that Alex is threatening the district attorney while surrounded by cops. Alex responds that he’s no scared of him as the Kiriakis family have friends in high places. Tate yells to stop. Tate asks Theresa not to let them send him to jail.

Wendy wishes there was a way that she could stay in Salem to be there for Tripp and Ava, but her parents need her in Hong Kong so she feels like she has to go. Tripp says he gets that as they just lost their son and she feels responsible to help them through that. Tripp assures that he totally understands, but they need to talk about what happens next. Tripp asks if they are going to try long distance. Wendy says yes but acknowledges that it’s a really long distance so it won’t be easy. Tripp says they can’t spend weekends together but they can still talk, text, and video calls along with visiting each other. Wendy says that sounds all nice and doable but says they are making these plans while in the same room. Wendy declares that they both know that when she leaves and they are separated by oceans, it won’t be the same. Tripp guesses that’s true. Wendy tells Tripp that she cares about him so much and she just wants him to be happy, so she doesn’t want to stand in his way if he meets someone else as she doesn’t expect him to wait for her. Tripp says he understands and that he wouldn’t want her waiting for him either. Wendy can’t believe they are actually saying goodbye.

Sarah and Xander joke about his neighbors seeing her leave. Xander tells Sarah that she looks beautiful and she thanks him. Sarah mentions that Victoria’s bag is packed so when she wakes up, she will head out. Sarah offers to help him with the dishes since he cooked. Xander asks her not to worry about that and forget about the dishes. Sarah asks if something is wrong. Xander says that earlier when putting Victoria down, he couldn’t help but think that now that Chloe has moved out, there is a spare room. Sarah says that’s for Victoria as he’s making it into a nursery. Xander points out that there’s a regular bed in there that Sarah slept on last night which she confirms was comfortable. Xander wonders if it’s possible that Sarah would consider moving in permanently with their daughter.

Wendy can’t imagine not having Tripp in her life as he’s been her rock and support. Wendy doesn’t think she could’ve survived her brother’s death without him. Wendy adds that he makes her laugh and she loves his shrimp tacos. Tripp says she makes him laugh too and he’s so impressed by how smart she is and how hard she works. Tripp calls her brave and kind, noting that she taught him to believe in love again as they kiss.

Sarah tells Xander that she doesn’t know what to say. Xander encourages her to say yes to moving in. Sarah admits that sharing custody is hard as she misses Victoria so much when they are apart. Xander agrees and feels it would be better for Victoria to have a permanent home rather than bouncing back and forth. Sarah brings up Konstantin staying with Maggie until his ankle heals and he can leave town. Sarah says she likes Konstantin but doesn’t trust him, so she doesn’t know how she would feel about Maggie being alone with him. Xander points out that lots of people still live there including Henderson. Xander adds that Sarah spends a good chunk of her time at the hospital anyways and suggests she trust that Maggie can take care of herself. Xander then asks if Sarah is just looking for a reason to say no.

Tate pleads with Theresa not to let them take him. Theresa asks for a minute alone with Tate. Brady assures Tate that they are going to get him out as soon as possible. Tate says he’s scared. Brady insists that he did nothing wrong. Theresa tells Tate that he’s innocent and they are going to fight like hell to prove it. EJ remarks that even if the drugs weren’t Tate’s, he didn’t pull the trigger on calling 911 and that could be the difference in whether or not Holly survives. Tate says that he’s so sorry. EJ calls it a little too late for sorry.

Sarah admits maybe she is looking for a reason to not move in. Sarah talks about how complicated this is for her and how she feels conflicted about them living together. Xander brings up that they kissed last night and they hadn’t talked about it. Xander asks if Sarah is worried that he only asked her to move in, in hopes that they would sleep together. Sarah talks about their emotions being heightened, worrying about Victoria, and getting caught up in the fireworks so it happened in the heat of the moment. Xander says that’s true but admits that he’s wanted to kiss her for a long time. Sarah admits she wanted to as well and calls their kisses amazing. Sarah adds that she’s scared of going too fast and falling madly in love with him again and regretting it.

Wendy guesses her car should be there soon. Tripp tells her to cancel it so he can take her to the airport, feeling that they should be together until the last minute. Wendy doesn’t think that’s a good idea, feeling it would just make it harder. Tripp wants to take her but Wendy says she’d rather he didn’t. Tripp says he understands. Wendy goes to freshen up before she leaves. Tripp puts a piece from their Jenga game in to Wendy’s bag. Wendy returns, having gotten a text that her car is there early. Tripp and Wendy then embrace one last time.

Theresa calls this a nightmare and repeats that her son is innocent and a good, caring person who would never willingly hurt someone he cares about. Alex tells her it will be okay. Theresa doesn’t know if she believes that as she says the look in EJ’s eyes isn’t a husband worried about his wife grieving, she just sees bitter hatred. Rafe tells Tate that he needs to get out of his suit, so Justin exits with ate. Rafe then asks for a word with EJ so they head in to the interrogation room. Theresa then agrees with Alex that she should’ve gotten another lawyer. Alex hugs her as she cries.

In the interrogation room, EJ tells Rafe to make it quick because he doesn’t want to miss Tate being taken away in handcuffs. Rafe questions what the hell is the matter with him and why he’s doing this. EJ thought since Rafe was in Holly’s life, that they would be on the same side. Rafe asks when the hell he’s ever been on the same side with EJ on anything. Rafe says even if Tate gave Holly the drugs, he’s just a kid who never meant for any of this to happen. Rafe adds that Holly took the drugs willingly. EJ calls that a baseless assumption, arguing that Tate could’ve drugged her drink for all they know. Rafe declares that soon they will know a lot more because he’s going to the high school to interview eye witnesses and maybe they’ll find out things about Holly that EJ didn’t even know. EJ warns Rafe to stay away from Nicole and not to try to make the victim the criminal. Rafe shouts that he’s trying to get EJ to see the reality of the tragedy when all he can do is lash out as a poor kid who is already traumatized. Rafe asks EJ if it makes him feel good to make Tate feel worse. EJ decides that this conversation is over. Rafe tells EJ to imagine if someone was doing this to Johnny when he was Tate’s age and how it would make him go nuts. Rafe urges EJ to think about it.

Justin and a cop escort Tate back in to the police station where Theresa hugs him.

Xander tells Sarah that if she agrees to move in, they would be roommates and co-parents. Xander promises to be a gentleman and respect her boundaries. Xander is sure that she would respect his boundaries as well. Sarah asks what his boundaries are. Xander jokes that she should never eat something from the fridge that he was saving for himself and he’d prefer if she didn’t put his phone, tablet, or laptop where he can’t find it while straightening up. Xander then asks what Sarah’s boundaries are. Sarah jokes there’s too many to state right now so she’ll have to make a list. Xander asks for her answer. Sarah responds that she’d be willing to give it a shot which excites Xander. Xander then presents Sarah with a key and welcomes her to her new home.

Wendy tells Tripp that it’s time for her to go. Tripp tells her that he’s going to miss her so much as they kiss goodbye. Wendy then takes her bag to leave and tells Tripp that she loves him. Tripp says he loves her too, always, as she then exits in tears.

Brady tells Tate to have faith that Holly is going to wake up and set things right. Justin adds that they will do everything in their power to prove his innocence and they will fight this. Tate says he never meant for any of this to happen. Brady insists that he’s innocent and they will get him home as soon as they can. Theresa tells Tate that they love him so much and hugs him. Rafe and EJ come out from the interrogation room. Rafe announces that it’s time to take Tate to his cell. EJ jokes about not keeping the other prisoners waiting. Theresa calls EJ a monster and warns him about if anything happens to her son. Alex holds her back and says he’s not worth it. Brady hugs Tate and encourages him to stay strong as he’s going to move Heaven and Earth to get him out. Rafe tells Tate that he’s sorry but it’s protocol for the transfer to jail as he then handcuffs Tate. Rafe escorts Tate out while Brady warns EJ that this is not over by a longshot.

Days Nitpicks and Flubs For The Week Of January 1, 2024

Nitpicks & Flubs

by Michele & Cheryl

Alex and Theresa from Days

Monday

-Alex and Theresa could be heard kissing while Harris was shown.

-The lump on Paulina’s neck wasn’t showing. Chanel made a big deal about seeing the lump, but it wasn’t visible.

-Why didn’t Brady tell Nicole right away what happened to Holly? Nicole could have gotten to Holly sooner.

-Tripp and the nurses weren’t wearing masks while they were helping Holly. They wore gloves, but they weren’t wearing masks.

Tuesday

-How did EJ know Theresa was a drug addict? He might have found out through Sami but it’s not likely she would have told him something like that.

-Why would Brady take the blame for the drugs at the risk of getting arrested? He would never get Rachel back if he was in prison.

-Ava could be heard talking to Tripp while Marlena was shown.

Wednesday

-Why did Marlena feel Eric needed to know about Holly? Eric isn’t linked to Holly, so he didn’t need to know what happened to her.

-How did Everett know Holly was in a coma?

-Why didn’t EJ tell Chad about Holly? Why did he have to find out through Everett?

Thursday

-What were the odds EJ had Chanel’s number? EJ and Chanel never talk to each other so it’s not likely she would have given him her phone number.

-Why was EJ determined to make Tate pay for Holly overdosing? EJ acted as if he had a personal ax to grind with Tate.

Friday

-When did Sarah decide she didn’t trust Konstantin? She said recently that she trusted him and now she doesn’t.

-Wendy could be heard talking to Tripp while Xander and Sarah were shown.

Days Opinions For The Week Of January 1, 2024

Opinion Article

by Michele & Cheryl

Tate from Days

Nicole wasted no time hoping in bed with EJ. What happened to her depression over losing her baby? She was upset at the idea of having another baby, but she was okay with doing what it takes to make a baby. Maybe she wasn’t as upset about the loss of her baby as she claims. We understand she wants to take her mind off her troubles, but it seems like she should have waited before having sex.

Why was Tate being accused of drugging Holly? The police treated him as if he put the drugs down Holly’s throat. They must have forgotten about the other people who overdosed on drugs. Was Tate suddenly responsible for the other people overdosing? Maybe we missed something, but we didn’t see why Tate was arrested for Holly overdosing.

Tate got himself in trouble when he tried to protect Holly after she overdosed. He should have told the police the truth about the drugs instead of trying to cover it up. If he did the right thing, he wouldn’t have to worry about the trouble he was in. It didn’t make sense for him to protect her at the risk of getting into trouble himself. We know he likes her, but going to prison wouldn’t be worth it.

The writers tried to rewrite Lucas and Will’s story by having Brady take credit for Tate giving Holly the drugs. We know Brady wanted to protect Tate, but it didn’t make sense for him to claim credit for the drugs since Tate was innocent. Tate might have had a better shot of getting off than Brady would have. Clearly, Brady didn’t have faith that Tate would get off the hook for what happened.

Alex had nerve telling Theresa that Justin wasn’t a good enough lawyer for Tate’s case. He didn’t have the right to make that call just because his financial status changed. Now that he thinks he’s Victor’s son he thinks Justin isn’t a good enough lawyer. We can’t wait to see the look on Alex’s face when he finds out the truth about Victor. He needs to be knocked off his high horse.

Why was EJ so determined to make Tate pay for what happened to Holly? EJ doesn’t have any proof that Tate gave her drugs, yet he is treating him as if he put the drugs down her throat. Nicole wasn’t determined to make Tate pay and Holly is her daughter. If anyone wanted Tate to pay, it would be Nicole. EJ is going overboard trying to play the hero for Nicole. His efforts are in vain because she still wants to be with Eric.

(To EJ about Theresa and Brady’s drug recovery)

(about handling the drug situation)
Ava: I think I might have a way.

Days of Our Lives Transcript

Days of Our Lives logo

Transcript provided by Thane and Suzanne

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[gentle music]

Hmm. What’s that wonderful smell?

Good morning, sleepyhead.

What are you cooking, chef?

Haggis with neeps and tatties.

[laughs] I’m sorry, come again?

Turnip and potato mash.

Mmm. So you’re making haggis for brunch. Was your New Year’s resolution to get in touch with your roots?

Well, I figured I’d have to surprise you. I was going to bring you breakfast in bed. I was actually kind of looking forward to that. I mean, I–I would have knocked first. I wouldn’t just presume to barge in there while you were, you know, in bed.

Actually, I– I wouldn’t have minded. You could have done that.

[romantic music]

[clattering]

[door unlocks]

Wendy, hey.

You’re home.

Finally. I’m–I’m really sorry I didn’t make it for New Year’s Eve. I got stuck at the hospital, and then it was a crazy night.

No, no, no, no, no, no. It’s okay. We can make up for it in Hong Kong when we celebrate Lunar New Year together.

[gasps] We are going to have such an amazing time, okay? Checking out all the fireworks and lantern displays. Oh, and I know the best street food stall to get dumplings and nian gao, which you are going to love.

[chuckles] And I’m happy to announce that the police department granted me an open-ended leave of absence.

That’s great.

Yeah, it is. Especially since, you know, I hope to come back someday. Of course, it all depends on my dad’s condition.

Right. Yeah, how is he holding up?

He’s still in rough shape. But luckily my flight leaves tonight, as you know, and then I’ll be there with him and my mom.

And I know they’ll both be so happy to see you.

And I’ll be so happy when I get to welcome you to Hong Kong. Speaking of which, have you made arrangements to take a leave from the hospital and join me soon?

[somber music]

About that. I’m sorry, Wendy. I–I can’t go.

Can’t wait to get you home, buddy.

Okay. I just got a call from the assistant district attorney.

I just got off the phone with the judge. He’s reversed his decision. Your bail has been revoked. I’m sorry, Tate. You’re not going anywhere except back into custody.

No. No, he can’t do that.

Well, unfortunately he can, because judges have a lot of latitude.

What? How can he do–how can he just change his mind? I mean, he just granted bail a half an hour ago.

Okay, okay. I just got to the bottom of it. Apparently EJ convinced the judge that Tate is a flight risk because of the family wealth, access to the jet.

He’s a–

That–that’s not true. It’s not fair.

Justin, EJ probably owns this judge. You know that.

I haven’t heard anything to suggest that. But EJ– as the district attorney, he holds a lot of sway.

Oh my God, this can’t be happening.

Please, can everyone just stop talking and tell me what’s going to happen to me?

[tense music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Victoria is still– oh, thank you. Victoria is still sleeping, yeah?

Yeah, yeah. Once we got settled after her last bottle, she slept through the night. No fever, nothing. She’s–she’s doing so much better.

She’s a trooper.

Yeah, she is. Thank you for letting me stay last night.

Oh, of course. I mean, you know, after the whole fever scare last night, and me stupidly not having any baby amphetamine on hand.

[laughs] Acetaminophen. It’s infant acetaminophen. And it all worked out.

Yeah, because of you. I mean, thank God you’re her mum and a doctor to boot. I mean, if anything, I should be the one thanking you.

[gentle music] Especially since I ruined your New Year’s Eve plans.

Her temperature’s back to normal.

Oh, thank God.

[chuckles] Between the meds and your lullaby.

Oh, well, I doubt it had anything to do with the latter. But she’s feeling better. Maybe you have time to nip over to your party now.

Oh, no. No, I don’t care about the party. I’d much rather be here with my little girl. And you.

[fireworks bursting] I wouldn’t say ruined.

Sarah, I’m, uh– look, I’m sorry. About last night, if I–if I did anything–

[baby crying] I’ll go get her.

Are you sure?

Yeah, yeah. The food’s all ready. Just help yourself. I’ll be right back.

[crying continues] Shh.

But, Tripp, I thought we had already decided. And you were the one who wanted to go with me.

I know, but that was all before last night.

What happened last night?

Holly Jonas was brought into the hospital.

Nicole’s daughter?

She OD’d at the Bistro. She was found on the loading dock apparently, barely alive.

My God. Is she going to be okay?

It’s too soon to tell. But this isn’t exactly about Holly.

What is it about, then?

[tense music]

Well, when I got off duty, I went over to check on Mom to make sure she was okay.

And how’s she doing?

[sighs] I don’t know. She’s acting really strange.

Well, that’s understandable, isn’t it? I mean, it must have been traumatic for her to have someone OD on her watch.

No, this is more than that. I–I know my mom. I know when something’s not right. When she encouraged me to go with you to Hong Kong, I– I had this sinking feeling that there was something up with her.

Like what?

I don’t know exactly. I mean, I just think there’s something going on that she doesn’t want me to know about, because she was way too eager to have me , miles away on another continent.

Yeah. I don’t know your mom all that well, but that does seem to be out of character for her.

Yeah, it is. You know, because my mom is all about wanting to be close to me, you know, because I’m her only child now that my brother Charlie’s gone, but it’s her way of making up for lost time. You know my mom used to be in the mob.

Yeah, I do know that. Wait, you don’t think–

I don’t want to think anything but that she’s telling me the truth. And she adamantly denied being involved with drugs.

But you don’t believe her, do you?

No, I don’t.

Son, don’t worry about it. We’re–we’re not going to give up. We’re never going to give up, okay? We’ll figure something out.

They can’t do this. They can’t send my child to jail.

No, no. It’ll be juvenile hall, Theresa, not jail. Look, we will explore our options and fight for the best outcome.

What options? What options do we have? I mean, can we go to the judge and say that EJ is clearly a conflict of interest? I mean, this is a personal vendetta. That’s all this is.

The first thing we do, we file an appeal. And I will do that immediately. And then we will explore every avenue to challenge this decision.

Well, how about if I just put up times the bail that was set? Do you think maybe that would convince him to reconsider?

No. The legal system doesn’t work like that, Alex.

Well, can’t you make it work that way? You’ve been doing this a long time. You know the judges. Make it happen.

Oh, a pleasant afternoon to you all.

You son of a bitch!

No! Hey. Let’s not make this worse, okay, Brady?

Why are you doing this? Why are you doing this to my son?

[dramatic music]

Maybe you should get some sleep.

And miss you leaving? No way. No, I’ve been up hours. What’s a few more?

So… you think your mom’s back in the game, huh?

I don’t want to think that, but too many things don’t add up. Or maybe they do.

What do you mean? How so?

Well, for starters, she suddenly breaks things off with Harris, right? And then she kills Gil dead right here in this very apartment just before. And then out of nowhere, she’s managing the Bistro with Stefan DiMera?

And have you confronted her about all this?

Of course, but she’s got an answer for everything, you know? It’s like she’s prepared. Too prepared.

Right. And I understand why you’re so worried, Tripp, especially given your mom’s history.

Now that Harris isn’t in her life anymore–

She needs you. Now more than ever, whether or not she’ll admit it. And so without you here, who will take care of her?

That’s the burning question. This hurts just so much more because you’re being so understanding, which I love you for.

Because I know you and I love you.

I am so sorry, Wendy. I truly am. All of this is so unfair.

You know, I– I won’t say I’m not disappointed, Tripp. But family is obviously very important to you, and I respect you for that. You know, just like I feel like I have to take care of my parents now. I know you feel the same way about your mom.

[somber music] It’s just, now we have another issue.

Yeah. Yeah, I know. What does this mean for us?

Oh, you really enjoyed that, huh?

Yeah, can’t you tell? I cleaned my plate.

[chuckles] Well, just wait till our little Victoria gets a taste of her granny’s “skons.” She’s going to love them.

I’m sorry, what?

[laughs] Say that again.

What, “skons?”

Do you mean scones?

Some Scottish people pronounce it differently. Like John, gone, “skon.”

[chuckles]

Wow. It’s amazing. After all this time that we have known each other, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say the word “scone.” “Skon.” It’s scone.

[laughs] I–you know, I do admit that I hope that she gets your accent.

Really? Why?

Because it’s– it’s charming, and I love it. And she is half-Scottish.

Mm, she is. But I don’t know, I was kind of hoping she’d take more after your side of the family.

Why is that?

Because I think the world of you, and of Maggie. And I happen to find your American accent very charming. In fact, I like everything about you, truth be told.

[gentle music]

Well, thanks.

[laughs] I–I should get dressed and pack up all of Victoria’s things. It is my night with her, as you know.

Right. How could I forget?

So I’ll be out of your hair in a jiffy, give you your apartment back.

[door closes]

Brady!

Brady!

Brady, don’t do it! Don’t. Don’t! It’s just going to make things worse for Tate.

Oh, let him go, Commissioner. I’m curious to see how far he’s willing to take it. Assaulting the district attorney? Perhaps some father-son time in jail would be a wonderful bonding experience.

Brady, no, no, no, no. We need you here with us.

Don’t make things worse.

I don’t think things could get worse.

Oh, I beg to differ, Theresa. Things can definitely get worse. Look at my family. Look at my wife, Nicole, broken at Holly’s bedside, very possibly about to lose another child. An innocent girl fighting for her life because she was influenced– probably pressured– into taking potentially lethal drugs by the amoral, entitled son of drug addicts.

That’s not– that’s not what happened. I told her not to do it. I told her it was a bad idea, but she didn’t listen to me!

Save it, son. Tate is nearly of age, and he has committed a serious crime that’s resulted in the grievous bodily injury of my stepdaughter.

You have no proof of that. What happened to being innocent until proven guilty?

Tate will be charged as an adult and held here at the local Salem jail with the other prisoners.

[tense music]

EJ, you can’t charge Tate as an adult for possession. The law doesn’t support that.

I’m well aware of the law, Justin. How about manslaughter or attempted murder for peddling a deadly batch of drugs that’s killing kids, and might have killed my stepdaughter?

He’s only . He can’t do this, can he?

I’m afraid he can. The district attorney can charge a minor as an adult if the crime is fitting.

EJ, please. EJ, he’s–he’s just a child. I mean, you’re a parent too. Can–can you just please have some compassion?

Theresa, I told you we should get another lawyer.

[scoffs] Justin should have changed the venue.

Alex, you are out of your element. You can’t change the venue until there’s a trial.

Well, the least you could have done was found a judge who wasn’t under EJ’s thumb.

Excuse me? What did you just say?

You heard me.

If you’re going to make an accusation, make it to my face.

How about I rearrange your face instead?

Oh, so now you’re threatening the DA while surrounded by cops. Brilliant.

I’m not scared of you, EJ. You don’t think the Kiriakises have friends in high places?

Stop! Everybody stop. Mom. Mom, I beg you, please, please don’t let them send me to jail. I–I can’t.

[somber music]

I know.

[sighs] I wish there was a way I could just stay here in Salem. You know, be here for you and your mom. But, as you know, my parents need me in Hong Kong. I feel like I have to go. I–

I get that, okay? Hey, they just lost their son, and you feel the responsibility to help them through that.

Yeah, I do.

And like I said, I totally understand. We need to talk about what happens next. I mean, are we going to try the long-distance thing?

Well, yeah. But it’s a really long distance, so it won’t be easy.

Right. I mean, it’s obviously, you know, too long to just spend weekends together here or there. But I mean, we can still talk and text, video calls. And then when there is more than a weekend we both have free, we can definitely visit each other.

Yeah, right. No, that all sounds nice and doable. I mean, making all these plans while we’re still in the same room. But we both once I leave and we’re separated by oceans, it won’t be the same.

Yeah, I guess it won’t be.

And, Tripp, I care about you so much, and I just want you to be happy. So I don’t want to stand in your way if you meet someone else, okay? I don’t–I don’t expect you to wait for me. I mean that.

I… I understand. I wouldn’t want you waiting for me, either.

I can’t believe we’re actually saying goodbye.

Look at me in my walk-of-shame outfit. Not that there’s anything to be ashamed of, just that your neighbors might talk.

Oh, my neighbors are terribly unfriendly. Whenever they pass me in the hall, they just look right through me. So I can’t imagine they’ll pay you any attention.

Ah. As much as I do love attention, I’m going to count on that.

And I have to say, if I may, that your walk-of-shame outfit is very becoming. Not that I’ve ever seen you look anything but beautiful, no matter what you wear or don’t wear.

[sultry music]

Well, um, thank you. Victoria’s diaper bag is all packed up. So as soon as she wakes up, I will head out. And in the meantime, I should help you with the dishes, because you’ve cooked.

Oh, no, stop. Don’t worry about that.

No, I don’t mind. Like I said–

Sarah, please, will you just forget about the dishes?

Okay. Is there something wrong?

No, it’s– earlier, when I was putting Victoria down, I– well, I couldn’t help but think that now that Chloe’s moved out, that there is, uh– there’s a spare room.

Right. Yeah, for Victoria. You–you’re making it into a nursery.

I am, yes. But you’ll notice that there is a regular bed in there too. I know you know, because you slept in it last night. I assume it was comfortable?

It was, yeah.

So I wonder–

[laughs]

If maybe it’s possible, if you would even consider–

Con–consider what?

Moving in here permanently, with our daughter.

You know, I can’t even imagine not having you in my life.

[gentle music] You’ve been my rock, my support. I don’t think I could have even survived my brother’s death without you. Not to mention you make me laugh, and I do love your shrimp tacos.

Well, you make me laugh too. I’m so impressed by your mind, how smart you are, how hard you work and do whatever you do. Just being around you lifts my spirits.

Even when I’m whiny and sad and sorry for myself?

You are never any of the above. You are brave and kind. You’ve taught me to believe in love again.

Xander, I– I don’t know what to say.

Say yes. Move in with me, with us.

[soft dramatic music]

I mean, sharing custody is hard. I miss her so much when we are apart.

Sarah, I totally agree. And come on, it has to be better for our little girl to have a permanent home rather than bouncing back and forth between two places all the time.

No, it would. It–it definitely would. But you know, uh, Konstantin is staying with my mom until his ankle is healed and he can leave town. And I like the guy, but I don’t exactly trust him, so I don’t know how I’d feel about my mom being alone with him all the time.

I mean, Maggie’s not really alone. There’s lots of people still live at the Kiriakis mansion. Henderson’s always there. It’s a–it’s a busy house. Plus, how can you keep an eye on your mum if you’re spending a good chunk of your day at the hospital?

That’s true. But maybe she could just volunteer more, you know, at the hospital. I mean–

Or maybe you could trust that she’s a big girl, and she can take care of herself. Unless–

Unless what?

Sarah, are you just looking for a reason to say no?

Please. Please don’t let them take me, Mom. Please.

Just please give me a minute. I need to speak to my son.

Look at me. Look at me. It’s going to be okay. We’re going to get you out of here as soon as possible.

I’m scared.

I know. Don’t be scared. You don’t have to be scared because you didn’t do anything wrong.

No. We know you’re innocent, and we are going to fight like hell to prove it. Don’t you worry.

[tense music]

Even if the drugs weren’t yours, Tate, the fact remains that you didn’t call when you found Holly, and that could mean the difference between whether she pulls through this or not.

I’m sorry. I’m–I’m so sorry.

Mm. Oh, it’s a little too late for sorry.

Okay. Maybe I am looking for a reason to not move in. It’s just, I think you can understand how complicated this is for me. You know, how I might feel conflicted about us living together.

Obviously I– but Sarah, let’s not ignore the -ton elephant in the room any longer. We kissed last night, and we haven’t talked about it. Sarah, are you worried that I only asked you to move in with me in the hope that maybe eventually we would sleep together?

[tense music]

Okay. Honestly, you know, our emotions were heightened. We were both worried that Victoria might be sick. And it was New Year’s Eve, and we did– we got caught up in the fireworks, and the celebratory feeling. And it was just–it happened in the heat of the moment.

That’s true.

Yeah.

But it’s also true that I’ve wanted to kiss you for a long time.

Well–

Well, what?

I wanted to kiss you too.

I can tell.

[laughs] Look, Xander, that kiss– it was– It was amazing. Yeah, all of our kisses are amazing. I’m just– I’m scared of going too fast and falling just madly in love with you again, and regretting it.

[sighs] So… guess my– my car should be here soon.

What? Oh, you shouldn’t have ordered a car. Cancel it. I’ll take you to the airport. We should be together till the very last minute.

Tripp, I don’t think it would be a very good idea for us to go together to the airport. I think it would just make it harder for us to say goodbye.

Yeah, but I want to take you.

Please, I’d rather you didn’t.

[somber music]

Okay. I understand.

I’m going to go freshen up before I go.

[phone beeps] Okay, my car is here a bit early, actually.

No, let me.

[crying]

[phone rings]

This is a nightmare. I mean, my son is innocent. And not just innocent, he is a good and caring person. He would never willingly hurt somebody, let alone somebody that he cares about.

Theresa, it’s going to be okay.

I don’t know if I can believe that. I mean, look–look– look at his eyes. Look at EJ’s eyes. I don’t see a husband who is grieving the loss of a child, or a man who is dying inside for his wife, because her daughter is suffering. I just– I just see bitterness and hatred.

[tense music]

Tate, we need to get you out of that suit. Officer Kelsey will help you with that.

I’ll go with Tate, make sure he’s taken care of.

Good. Counselor, a word?

Of course, Commissioner. Lead the way.

You know what, Alex? You were right. I should have listened to you. We should have gotten another lawyer.

Make this quick. I don’t want to miss the boy being hauled away in cuffs.

What the hell is the matter with you? Why are you doing this?

You can’t figure it out? I mean, as someone who was in Holly’s life at one time, I would think you and I would be on the same side of this, Hernandez.

On the same side?

Yes. –

[chuckles] When the hell was I ever on the same side with you on anything?

[tense music] I mean, for God’s sake. Okay, let’s say Tate did give Holly those drugs. He’s just a kid. He’s a kid who never meant for any of this to happen. Besides which, Holly took those drugs willingly.

That is a baseless assumption. Tate could have put them in her drink for all we know.

Oh, yeah. Yeah, sure. Well, soon we will know a lot more, because I’m going to go to the high school, and I’m going to interview eyewitnesses, and then we will get a clear picture as to what was going on with Holly. Maybe some things that you don’t even know about, but perhaps I should just share that with Nicole.

Stay away from my wife, and don’t you dare try and make the victim the criminal here.

All I am trying to do is to get you to see the reality of this tragedy! I mean, my God. Holly Jonas is in a coma. Her mother is in agony. And all you can do is lash out at this poor kid who’s already horrified and traumatized? You’re trying to make his pain worse. Does that make you feel good, EJ? Is it lifting your spirits?

This conversation is over.

Okay. Well, think about this, then. Think about Johnny when he was Tate’s age. Imagine if someone was doing what you are doing to Tate to him. How would that make you feel? Yeah, it’d make you go nuts. Think about it, EJ.

[dramatic music]

Sarah, if you moved in here with me, if you agreed to, we’d be roommates and co-parents. And I promise I would– I’d be a proper gentleman. I mean, I would respect your boundaries. That’s the modern way of putting it, right?

It is, yeah. It is.

And I’m sure that you would respect mine.

Your boundaries?

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, okay. Well, uh, what are they?

Well, let’s see. You should never, ever–

Oh.

Eat something from the fridge that I was saving for myself.

Ah. Yeah, okay. Any other boundaries?

Yes.

Oh.

Actually a very important one. You should– I would prefer it if you did not–

Mm-hmm.

Put my phone or tablet or laptop somewhere where I can’t find it. You know, in an effort to straighten up.

Yeah, no. I get that. I get that one, yeah.

So how about you? What are your boundaries?

Oh, man. Just too many to state right now, so I’ll probably just make a list, or some sort of a spreadsheet.

Oh, a spreadsheet. Yeah, that’d be helpful.

I think it would be, yeah.

So what’s your answer?

[gentle music]

I’d be willing to give it a shot, I guess. I mean, I would.

[laughs]

I was really hoping you would say that.

[keys jangle] Sarah, welcome to your new home.

Did you have these in your pocket the whole time?

[both laugh] You’re quiet.

[sighs] Tripp… I have to go. It’s time.

I know.

[somber music] God, I’m gonna miss you so much.

[sighs] I love you.

I love you too. Always.

[sobs]

[exhales]

Hey. Look at me. Hey. We have to have– we have to have faith that Holly is going to wake up, okay? And she’s going to make everything okay. She’s going to set things right.

We will do everything in our power to prove your innocence. We are going to fight this, Tate.

[tense music]

I never meant for any of this to happen.

Of course you didn’t.

I know.

Of course you didn’t.

Buddy, buddy, you are innocent. You’re innocent. And until we prove it– we will prove it. And we’re going to get you home as soon as we can, okay?

Come here. We love you. We love you so much, Tate.

Tate, I– I’m sorry.

Hey. I’m sorry to say, but it’s time for Tate to come with me.

We wouldn’t want to keep your new cellmates waiting, now would we?

You are a monster. I swear, if anything happens to my son–

All right, Theresa. Let’s not give him any more ammunition, okay? This guy’s not worth it.

Come here. You stay strong, all right? I’m going to move heaven and earth to get you out of here, you hear me?

[handcuffs jangling]

Come on. Tate, I’m sorry, but it’s protocol for the transfer down to the jail.

Okay.

Okay. Let’s go.

EJ… this isn’t over. Not by a long shot.

Update written by Joseph

Chanel and Johnny wake up in bed together in Johnny’s room. They talk about feeling like they never left. Johnny credits Paulina telling Chanel not to come home as he was happy to bring her to his home and his bed. Chanel tells Johnny that last night was a first for her.

Paulina wakes up to find Abe made breakfast. Paulina at first gets excited that he remembered her favorites but Abe says he just made what was in the refridgerator. Abe apologizes but Paulina says it’s not his fault that he doesn’t remember anything. Abe clarifies that he’s sorry about last night.

At the police station, Theresa thanks Justin for coming and apologizes for calling him on a holiday but she’s so scared for Tate. Justin tells her not to apologize as he’s available 24/7 for family and he knows Alex is worried about Theresa and Tate. Theresa says she really appreciates that and says she didn’t know if things were okay between them since things were tense at Christmas dinner and because of Alex. Alex then arrives and brings Theresa a latte, noting that he did so even though she kicked him out of the hospital last night. Alex greets Justin and asks what he’s doing there. Theresa explains that she called him to take Tate’s case. Justin gets a text that Tate’s arraignment will be at 11 AM. Alex thanks Justin for taking care of that and then tells him that he can go now because he’s hired somebody else to represent Tate.

In the interrogation room, Brady reminds Tate that he and Theresa told him to stay far away. Tate responds that he was going to but he couldn’t let Brady take the fall for something he didn’t do. Brady argues that he wasn’t going to let Tate take the fall either, pointing out that the cops saw him with the pills. Tate shouts that the pills weren’t his. Brady says he knows that but it looks bad because the cops saw he and Holly at the scene. Brady knows Tate thinks he can handle this but he can’t. Brady warns that EJ is out for blood, so it’s better his than Tate’s. Tate argues that he would be tried in juvenile court while Brady won’t. Tate declares this is his battle and asks Brady to let him fight it. John enters and comments on things sounding tense. Brady says things are fine. Tate reveals that he asked John to bring him a suit for his arraignment. Brady complains about Tate being stubborn which John says sounds like someone else he knows.

EJ calls Rafe from the hospital and says he wants every detail on Tate’s arraignment as it concerns the citizens of Salem. Rafe comments on knowing EJ’s demands and mutters that it’s a personal vendetta but agrees to keep him posted. Rafe asks how Holly is doing. EJ informs him that she had another seizure but she’s stable now and Nicole hasn’t left her side. Rafe promises to give EJ any updates that he can and tells him to be with his wife because she needs him. EJ responds that he would, but Nicole has company as she’s with Eric.

Theresa questions Alex hiring another lawyer. Alex argues that family is not what Theresa needs right now and that she needs a high powered ruthless attorney which is not Justin’s style. Justin agrees and says his style is facts and fighting for what’s right. Alex says that’s all good but he made some phone calls but he used his resources to hire Tate the best and that’s what is happening. Theresa tells him no, that is not what is happening.

John tells Brady that they can only move forward and Tate is going to be arraigned, so they need to remain optimistic. Tate tells John to tell Marlena that he’s sorry for sneaking out and asks how Holly is doing. John says she’s about the same. Tate apologizes to Brady for not telling him when Holly showed him the drugs and for not calling 911 right away, explaining that he was so afraid of her getting in trouble when he should’ve been more afraid that she could die.

Johnny offers to make Chanel breakfast which she accepts. Johnny notes that he wouldn’t mind dessert for breakfast as they kiss until Chanel’s phone goes off. Chanel checks her phone and sees that it’s EJ, who says he’s been trying to reach Johnny. Johnny acknowledges that he left his phone on silent all night and checks it, finding out that everyone has been trying to get a hold of him. Johnny is shocked to find out that Holly overdosed and jumps out of bed to get dressed, saying he has to get to the hospital.

Abe wants Paulina to understand that he thought it would be wrong for them to be intimate when he doesn’t remember what they had. Paulina says she does understand and promises not to hold it against him. Abe assures that he loves the woman that he is getting to know as they kiss until Chanel comes home. Chanel apologizes for interrupting and asks if she should leave them alone.

Theresa tells Alex that she appreciates him wanting the best for them, but insists that they have that in Justin and he knows Tate. Theresa asks if this has something to do with dinner the other night but Alex claims it doesn’t. Theresa argues that she and Brady trust Justin and so does Tate. Theresa declares that Justin is going to be dealing with this case. Justin appreciates her confidence but says he’s open to having a consulting lawyer. Rafe comes over and agrees that might not be a bad idea. Alex points out that even the cops are saying they need to lawyer up more. Rafe acknowledges that it’s no secret that EJ is out for blood and he has an axe to grind with Tate. Rafe states that punishing Tate if he’s innocent is not going to help anyone.

John encourages Tate to stop blaming himself as it’s not going to change a thing. John says he and Brady will be right outside as he gets dressed for his arraignment. John tells Brady that he knows he’s trying to help but Tate needs to do this himself. Brady worries that John is fooling himself with EJ as the district attorney and declares there is no way that Tate will get justice.

Johnny goes to the hospital and asks EJ how Holly is and why he’s not in there with her. EJ responds that it’s not a good time. EJ informs Johnny that Holly is in a coma. Johnny asks if he can go see her. EJ repeats that it’s not a good time as Nicole is in there and she’s with Eric.

Chanel apologizes again for interrupting but Abe says she didn’t interrupt. Paulina says they were just having a lovely breakfast that Abe made for her. Abe decides to go get dressed and leaves the room while Chanel comments that it looks like last night went well. Paulina confirms that she and Abe had a long talk where she told him everything about her medical condition. Chanel is glad that she told him and asks how he responded. Paulina says that Abe was supporting, caring, and that he’s going to be there for her. Paulina adds that Abe told her that he loves her which Chanel calls wonderful. Chanel points out that Abe is still here and was in his pajamas but Paulina clarifies that they slept in separate beds. Chanel asks why. Paulina explains that it wasn’t the right time but they talked this morning and they are in a better place now. Paulina asks how Chanel’s New Year’s Eve was and where she went after the party. Chanel admits that she went back to Johnny’s place and thinks back to last night where her and Johnny were kissing and talking about how it had been two years since they had been together. Johnny ended up saying he was hungry and pulling out whipped cream which he said he was going to eat off of her. Chanel then informs Paulina that their New Year’s Eve was pretty sweet.

John and Brady come out of the interrogation room where Brady confronts Theresa about letting Tate come here to confess. Theresa explains that he snuck out while Brady argues that if Tate would’ve just gone back to boarding school like he wanted him to, none of this would be happening. Theresa blames Brady for letting Tate do what he wanted. Justin interrupts and says that Tate needs all of them on the same side. Alex says that’s not going to happen but he’s on Theresa’s side. John says to just focus on Tate. Justin talks about being optimistic since there is very little concrete evidence against Tate and the arraignment will be quick. Justin states that Tate will plead not guilty and the judge will set bail and a trial date while Tate will be released to a parent’s supervision which he assumes will be Brady which he confirms. Justin repeats that the hearing will be quick so he suggests going to court with Tate alone while they stay here. Brady and Theresa try to argue but Justin says based on what he saw here, it’s for the best because the judge will not tolerate outbursts. John agrees that they should let Justin do his job. Tate then comes out of the interrogation room and announces that he’s ready.

Johnny questions Nicole being in Holly’s room with Eric while EJ is just out here. EJ explains that Nicole is beside herself with worry, so he wasn’t going to just storm in and pull her out of Eric’s arms. Johnny calls that out of character for EJ. EJ acknowledges that Eric has been in Holly’s life for a long time so he is a great comfort to Nicole. EJ says that Nicole needs him to take care of business. EJ declares that Nicole has been blaming herself while this is all on the shoulders of Tate. Johnny questions Tate being responsible. EJ argues that Holly never used drugs until Tate came around. Johnny asks if he’s sure about that. EJ blames Tate’s parents and suggests the apple didn’t fall far from the rotten tree. EJ declares that Tate almost killed Holly, so he will never let him anywhere near her again.

Brady complains about waiting at the police station. John suggests they go get some fresh air and tells Theresa to let them know when Justin and Tate come back. Alex tells Theresa that he knows that he got under her skin last night and he’s trying not to be that guy, but he asks if she’s sure that Tate is telling the truth. Theresa says of course he is as she and Tate have talked many times about drugs, alcohol, and addiction and he would never go down that road. Alex argues that kids don’t always listen and they learn the hard way from their own mistakes. Theresa hears what he’s saying but says she can’t go down that road as she has to believe that her son is telling the truth. Alex apologizes for being cynical and decides that if Theresa believes Tate, so does he, as he then hugs her.

Brady and John walk to the park. Brady complains that Theresa should’ve locked Tate in his room. John feels they both could’ve handled things better. Brady asks how. John points out that trying to take the fall doesn’t always work out. Brady hopes he didn’t screw up Tate’s case. John assures that everyone knows he was trying to protect his son. Brady asks if it’s not possible after all that he and Theresa did to make sure that Tate did not follow in their footsteps and do drugs. John acknowledges that kids make mistakes, so if he did do drugs, the family will rally around him to get him the help he needs but his gut says that Tate is telling the truth. Brady prays that he’s right.

Johnny asks how EJ can be so sure that it was Tate that gave Holly the drugs. EJ calls Tate a punk who is nothing but trouble. Johnny reveals to EJ that Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve while EJ and Nicole were at Green Mountain. EJ questions not knowing about this. Johnny says that kids don’t tell their parents everything but he rushed over to make sure Holly was okay. EJ asks if he saw her drunk which Johnny confirms. EJ acknowledges that Nicole didn’t think it was a good idea to leave Holly alone on her birthday and it obviously wasn’t. Johnny explains that Holly was trying to be supportive of EJ and Nicole and didn’t want to be selfish. Johnny blames himself for not keeping a closer eye on Holly at the party. EJ insists that this is nobody’s fault but Tate’s.

Paulina tells Chanel that nothing makes her happier than seeing her smile. Chanel repeats that she’s sorry for interrupting her and Abe. Paulina tells her not to be, assuring that things were not going any further than the kiss that she walked in on. Paulina asks about Chanel saying she had a sweet night with Johnny and asks what they did. Chanel responds that they just shared a little late night dessert as she flashes back to that night with whipped cream. Chanel tells Paulina that Johnny said he’d love to have late night dessert more often. Paulina comments that it’s not always a good idea to have something rich so late at night.

Johnny tells EJ that if Holly was drinking and he didn’t know about it, he thinks it’s possible that she could’ve been doing other things too. EJ argues that Holly isn’t like that and is a good kid. Johnny says that good kids do drugs and it happens. Johnny points out that Tate was there for Holly. Johnny says that he told Holly to lean on Tate, so if EJ is going to be mad at Tate, he should be mad at him too. EJ then gets a call and steps away to answer.

Brady and John return to the police station where Alex tells them there’s no news yet. Brady apologizes to Theresa for jumping down her throat earlier as it was not her fault that Tate snuck out. Theresa understands that emotions are running high and thanks him. Justin and Tate return. Tate happily announces that he made bail, relieving everyone as Justin says he can go home.

Chanel sits with Abe and Paulina as Abe talks about wondering about Holly. Paulina calls it such a tragedy. Chanel notes that Johnny said he would call as soon as he can. Paulina is glad that Holly moved on from Johnny to Tate since he’s her own age. Chanel worries that if Tate gave Holly the drugs, he could be in some big trouble. Abe says his heart goes out to Holly as this drug epidemic is out of control and people are overdosing every day and dying. Paulina wishes she knew how to stop it. Chanel encourages that she’s doing the best she can. Paulina says when she got the report of another overdose this morning, she had no idea it was someone they knew and it hits close to home. Abe decides he should get to the hospital in case Nicole needs him. Paulina calls him a good man and says she will call to find out what exactly happened since Rafe should be able to tell her more by now.

Johnny walks through the park and calls Chanel. Chanel asks how Holly is. Johnny responds that she’s not good as she’s in a coma, hooked up to tubes, and almost died. Chanel asks what happened. Johnny informs her that she overdosed outside the Bistro right after they left. Chanel wishes they went with Tate to look for her. Chanel asks if Holly was using and if the drugs were Holly’s or Tate’s. Johnny says no one really knows and EJ seems to think Tate was responsible but he left and said he’d come back later. Chanel mentions that she’s home with Paulina and Abe and that Paulina told her about last night. Johnny invites Chanel to breakfast at the Pub. Chanel agrees to meet him there and says she wants to hear more about Holly and Tate. Chanel asks where Tate is now. Johnny responds that he’s not sure but he knows EJ is bound and determined to hold Tate responsible. Johnny worries that EJ is furious and enraged, so he hopes he doesn’t do anything crazy..

At the police station, Rafe comments that it’s like a New Year’s party as Theresa, Brady, and Alex thank Justin. Justin points out that it was just the arraignment while Brady notes that who knows what could’ve happened with EJ in charge. John decides to put on a big lunch for all of them and leaves the station. Brady asks if they can leave but Justin says he has to pick up the release papers from the court and exits. Rafe encourages Tate to get some rest. Tate says he really just wants Holly to be okay. Rafe gets a call and steps away to answer. Brady tells Alex and Theresa that he’d love it if they came to lunch at the house which they agree to. Theresa talks about being relieved as Tate says he just wants to get out of here. Brady says it’s one step at a time but Tate is coming home. Justin returns and announces that he just got a call from the assistant district attorney. Rafe returns and announces that he just got a call from the judge, who has reversed his decision and revoked Tate’s bail. Rafe reveals that Tate’s not going anywhere as he has to take him back in to custody.

Recap written by Michele and Cheryl

While Johnny and Chanel were in bed together, EJ texted Chanel. EJ texted her because he couldn’t get in touch with Johnny. Johnny checked his phone and realized EJ reached out to him. He found out Holly overdosed. Johnny wanted to go to the hospital. EJ told Rafe that he wanted to be kept informed about Tate’s arraignment. Rafe asked about Holly’s condition. EJ told him she had another seizure. Rafe suggested he be with Nicole. EJ said she was with Eric. Johnny showed up at the hospital and wanted to know about Holly. EJ said it wasn’t a good time to see her. Johnny thought it was strange of EJ to stand by and allow Nicole to be with Eric. EJ said he had to take care of things. He was convinced Tate had something to do with it and was determined to keep Holly away from him. Johnny said Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve, but EJ thought Tate was responsible for what happened. Theresa was grateful that Justin came to help Tate. Alex showed up and said the arraignment was scheduled soon. Alex said they needed a ruthless and high-powered attorney to help Tate. Theresa said she appreciated Alex’s help, but she and Brady trusted Justin to handle the case. Justin said he would have a consultant attorney on call.

Tate told Brady he didn’t want him taking the blame for something he didn’t do which was why he told the truth. Brady said he couldn’t handle it by himself. He said EJ wanted Tate’s blood. Tate said he wanted to fight his own battle. John brought Tate a suit for the arraignment. He told Brady to remain optimistic. Tate apologized for not calling for help when he found Holly unconscious. Brady said he didn’t think Tate would get justice with EJ as the D.A. Justin assured everyone that there was little evidence against Tate. He said Tate would plead not guilty at the arraignment and the judge would set a trial date and bail. Justin said Tate would be released into parental supervision since he was a minor. He thought Brady would assume parental responsibility for Tate. Justin said he would go to the hearing alone. Alex asked Theresa if Tate was innocent. She said she was sure her son didn’t do drugs. John and Brady went to the park. Brady was convinced that he might have hurt Tate’s case by taking the blame. It made it look as if Tate was trying to hide something. John said he was trying to protect his son. Brady questioned if Tate followed in his and Theresa’s footsteps and got involved in drugs. John said his instincts told him Tate was innocent. When everyone went back to the police station, Tate told them he made bail. Later on, Tate found out the judge changed the decision and revoked bail.

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[dramatic music]

Good morning, beautiful.

Good morning.

[sighs] I missed this.

Yeah, me too.

You know, it’s–it’s crazy. There’s a part of me that feels like I never left here.

Maybe our hearts have been here the whole time.

Yeah, maybe.

I’ll have to thank your mom for banning you from coming home last night.

Oh, my God, that was a surprise.

I was more than happy to offer you refuge in my home… and in my bed.

You know, last night, that was a first for me.

It was not.

Not that part.

[giggles] The other thing.

Oh, right.

Mm-hmm.

Yes, the–the other thing.

Hmm.

Mmm.

Oh.

[chuckles] What smells so–so good?

[both chuckle] Oh, turkey sausage, fried eggs and tomatoes, Texas toast. All my favorites. You remembered.

Just made what was in the refrigerator.

Oh. Well, it all looks delicious.

Well. Uh, Paulina… I’m sorry.

Oh, no, you don’t need to be sorry. It isn’t your fault that you don’t– you don’t remember anything.

No, I mean I’m sorry about last night.

Thank you so much for–for coming. I’m–I’m really sorry to have called you on a holiday. I’m just so terrified for Tate.

Don’t apologize. I’m available – for family. And I know Alex is very concerned about both of you.

Yeah, I really appreciate that. I didn’t know if things were OK between us. There was a lot of tension at the Christmas dinner, and I know Alex can be a bit of a–

A bit of a thoughtful guy who brings lattes to the woman who kicked him out of the hospital last night.

[upbeat music] I’m sorry I didn’t bring you one, Da– Justin.

No, I’m fine. I’ve already had my morning coffee.

Good. So what are you doing here anyway?

I called him the minute I heard about Tate.

[phone beeps]

Oh, Tate’s arraignment starts at : a.m.

Oh, great, great. Thank you for taking care of that. But you don’t have to stay. You can go now.

I beg your pardon?

Well, I’m sorry to do this, and I say it with all love and respect. But I’ve hired somebody else to represent Tate.

Your mom and I told you to stay as far away from here as possible, Tate.

I was going to, Dad, but I couldn’t let you take the fall for something that you didn’t do.

And I’m not gonna let you take the fall for something that you didn’t do, either, all right? The cops saw you with those pills, Tate.

How many times do I have to tell you? They weren’t mine.

I know that. I know that. But it looks bad. Holly got those pills from somewhere, and the cops saw you and her at the scene. Son, I know you think you can handle this, but you can’t.

[dramatic music] Son, Holly’s stepfather is the DA. He wants blood. Better mine than yours, OK?

Yeah, but I’ll be tried in juvenile court. You won’t. This is my battle, Dad. Let me fight it.

[door clicks open]

Oh, God.

It’s sounding a little tense in here, gentlemen.

Oh. Dad, things are fine.

Got your suit, kid.

Thanks, Grandpa.

Yeah.

What is this, for the arraignment?

I asked him to bring it.

Wow, you just have this all figured out, don’t you? You are so stubborn. You know that?

Boy, beginning to sound like someone else I know.

[sighs]

I need to be kept up on every detail regarding Tate’s arraignment. Is that clear, Commissioner?

Oh, I am well aware of your concerns about this case, EJ.

I mean it, Rafe. This involves the safety of every citizen in Salem.

Yeah, certainly not a personal vendetta.

What was that?

What? I just said I’ll keep you posted. How’s Holly doing?

She had another seizure a little while ago.

Oh, man, I’m sorry to hear that.

She’s stable now. She was–she was with Nicole at the time, and Nicole hasn’t left her side.

Listen to me, EJ. I promise you that I will give you any updates that I get, OK? Go be with your wife. She needs you.

I would, but Nicole has company right now. She’s with Eric.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

You hired another lawyer?

Family is not what you need right now, Theresa. What you need is a high-powered criminal attorney who is ruthless. And I’m sorry, that is just not your style.

No, no, ruthless is not my style. Facts are my style. Truth is my style. Fighting for what’s right is my style.

Yeah, and that’s all well and good. Nonetheless, I made some phone calls, and needless to say, I have hired somebody, and I have my resources to get Tate the very best. That’s what’s happening.

No, Alex, that is definitely not what is happening.

[sighs]

[tense music]

We can only move forward now, Brady. Tate is going to be arraigned, and we need to focus. We need to remain optimistic for the best possible outcome under the circumstances here, got it?

Yeah.

It–it looks great, Grandpa. Thank Grandma for me.

Well, you know, she steamed that herself. She wanted you to look your best.

And tell her I’m–tell her I’m sorry I snuck out.

No, you can tell her yourself when you see her.

How’s–how’s Holly doing?

She’s doing about the same.

I– last night when she showed me those drugs, I should have– I should have found you and told you. I just– I’m sorry, Dad.

Well, now that’s a lesson learned, isn’t it, kiddo?

I should have called right away too. When I found her lying out back, I just– I was so afraid of her getting in trouble. I didn’t– I wasn’t– I should have been more afraid that she could die.

You know, speaking of last night, I am a little hungry.

Wait, still?

Yeah. Would you like me to make you some breakfast?

Ooh. How about some biscuits with Southern fried eggs and gravy?

Mm. I was actually thinking a slightly… less ambitious alternative.

Such as?

I don’t know, maybe a… doughnut and some coffee.

What? Come on.

OK, OK, I’m kidding. I’ll make you whatever you like. But first…

[dramatic music] I wouldn’t mind a little dessert for breakfast.

[phone beeps] No, no, don’t do it. Don’t do it.

Mm-hmm, what if it’s Mama?

Hey, aah!

What if it’s Mama?

OK, fine.

[sighs]

It’s your dad. He says he’s been trying to reach you.

I– I left my phone on silent all night. Oh, jeez. Everyone’s been trying to… get ahold of me. Oh, no.

What? What–what happened?

Holly OD’d. I–I got to get to the hospital.

Oh, my God. Here, go. Go.

Paulina…

[dramatic music] I want you to understand. I felt it would be wrong for us to be intimate when I just don’t remember what we had.

[sighs] I understand.

Well, so you’re not upset?

I promise I won’t hold it against you.

[sighs]

[chuckles]

Now, just to be clear…

[chuckles]

I do love the woman I’m getting to know.

Oh.

[both chuckle]

[both smooch]

Oh, my gosh, I am so sorry. Should I leave you guys alone?

[sighs] Look, Alex, I really appreciate you wanting the best for us, but we have that with Justin. And he knows Tate.

And the attorney that I hired will get to know Tate too. More importantly, he knows how to rip apart the prosecution’s case.

So does Justin. What–what–what is this? Does this have to do with the silliness that happened at dinner the other night?

No, Theresa, no, not at all. It’s ouzo under the bridge.

What is the problem, then? Because Brady and I trust Justin. And so does Tate, and he does not trust easily. You know what? I–I don’t–I don’t know what–what this is. I–I don’t–I don’t care, because he is– he’s gonna be dealing with this case, period.

[sighs]

Thank you, Theresa. I appreciate the vote of confidence. But if it would satisfy Alex, I am open to having a consulting lawyer on call.

Thank you.

Yeah, well, that might not be such a bad idea.

OK, see, that’s not good news. Now the cops are telling us that we even have to lawyer up more.

Well, it’s no secret that EJ’s out for blood. He’s got an ax to grind with Tate. But punishing that kid, especially if he’s innocent, that is not gonna help anyone, least of all Holly or Nicole.

All right, kiddo, here’s the road map. First, you’re gonna stop blaming yourself. Number one, it’s not gonna do any good. Number two, it’s not gonna change a damn thing. You got it? All right. Now, you pull yourself together and get in your suit. Your dad and I will be right outside, OK? OK.

[sighs] I really wish that you had–

We’re done here. We’re–we’re done here. Let’s just give him some space here. Hey, I know you’re trying to help him. But Tate has to man up and do this himself right now. He needs to know that we trust the judicial system is gonna work for him.

Dad, Dad, Dad, the judicial system, really? With EJ as DA? You are fooling yourself. There’s no way that my poor kid is gonna get justice.

[elevator bell dings]

Dad. Hey, how’s Holly? Why are you out here? Shouldn’t you be in there with her?

It’s–it’s–it’s not a good time, son.

Is she–

She’s alive. She’s just–she’s in a coma.

OK, well, can I go see her?

As I said, it’s not a good time.

Why not?

Nicole is in there, and she’s with Eric.

Chanel, silly child, get on over here.

[chuckles]

I am so sorry I interrupted.

You didn’t interrupt anything.

[chuckles] We were just having a lovely breakfast that Abe made for me.

Mm.

Well, I’m going to go get dressed, so if you ladies will excuse me.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

[both chuckle]

Happy New Year.

Yeah.

[sighs]

So…it looks like last night went well.

Mm. Mostly, yes. Abe and I had a long talk, and I told him about… everything. I mean, about my medical condition.

Oh. Oh, really? Mama, I am so glad you told him about it. How did he respond?

Oh, how do you think? He’s Abe Carver. He was supportive and caring, said he’d be there for me. And I said I didn’t want him to, and he said, too bad.

Yeah, that sounds like Abe.

And–and then… he–he told me he loves me.

Oh, Mama, that is so wonderful. OK, and then now he’s still here in his pajamas.

I dug up those PJs from the back of a drawer. We slept in separate beds.

Oh. OK, I might regret asking this, but why?

Oh, you know. Well, he lost his memory. I’m here. He’s there, blah, blah, blah. So it wasn’t the right time. But, you know, we talked this morning, and we’re in a better place now.

Good. I’m glad.

[sighs] So… how was your New Year’s Eve? Where’d you go after the party?

[dramatic music]

Oh, I… just went back to Johnny’s place.

[door clicks open] Thanks for lending me your shirt.

Suddenly that shirt is my all-time favorite.

[chuckles]

[sighs] So… now what? What should we do?

I don’t know, anything… everything.

[sighs] I can’t believe it’s been two years since we were together.

Two long years.

You know, it’s– it’s funny. We were married, so… why am I so nervous?

Hey, hey. You never have to be nervous around me. OK? You know what? I am…a little hungry.

Now?

Yeah, so it’s a good thing that while you were in the bathroom, I went downstairs… and brought up a little snack.

[laughs] You’re gonna eat that out the can?

No, not eat it out of the can. I am going to eat it… off of you.

Yeah, well, let’s just say our New Year’s was pretty…sweet.

Theresa, you let Tate get out of the house so he could come down here and confess? What were you thinking, huh?

I did not let him get out. He snuck out. Marlena and I thought that he was in his bed sleeping.

Well, that’s great. You know, if he would have just gone back to boarding school like I wanted him to, none of this would be happening to the poor kid.

Oh, really? Well, you’re the one who let him decide on what he wanted to do, Mr. Big Stuff. And he decides to stay, and you blame me?

OK, OK, listen. We–Tate needs all of us on the same side here.

I know.

[sighs]

Like that’s gonna happen. But for the record, I’m on her side.

Yeah, shocker.

Let’s just focus on–on–on Tate here. What’s the outlook?

Well, actually, I’m optimistic after reading the police report. I mean, there’s very little concrete evidence against him. So this arraignment this morning will be quick. Tate will plead not guilty to the charges. Then the judge will set bail and a trial date. And then, since Tate is a minor, he’ll be released into a parent’s supervision. And I assume that will be you, Brady.

Yes.

All right. So like I said, this hearing is gonna be quick. I suggest that I go into court alone with Tate and the rest of you remain here.

Whoa.

No, I don’t agree with that.

Justin, that’s not a good–

Please! Based on what I just witnessed here, OK, it’ll be for the best, because this judge will not tolerate outbursts of any kind.

So we’re gonna let Justin do his job here, right, everyone?

Yeah.

All right.

I’m ready.

So Nicole is in Holly’s room with Eric, and you’re just…out here?

She’s beside herself with worry. I wasn’t gonna storm in there and pull her out of Eric’s arms.

OK. Well, got to say, that’s a little out of character for you, Dad.

Eric has been in Holly’s life for a long time. He is, of course, a great comfort to her right now. No, what Nicole needs from me in this moment is to take care of business.

Take care of business? What does that mean?

It means she is in there torturing herself for not having seen the signs with Holly earlier, when in reality, it is not her fault in the least. No, this is all on the shoulders of that loser Tate Black.

Whoa. This–this is all Tate’s fault?

Holly never even used drugs until Tate came along.

You sure about that?

Oh, come, now. You’ve met his parents. I guarantee the apple hasn’t fallen far from those rotten trees. No, no, no, that–that– that druggie loser almost killed Holly. I will never let him anywhere near her again.

[dramatic music]

[sighs] This waiting is driving me crazy. I thought this was supposed to be quick, huh?

Yeah, I know. Let’s–let’s go out and get some fresh air. Theresa, let us know when they come back.

[sighs]

[sighs] Theresa, I know I got under your skin last night, and I’m trying very hard not to be that guy, but somebody’s got to say it. Are you sure Tate’s telling the truth?

Of course he is. Look, I know I sound like one of those naive parents. My son would never do that. I know. But he and I have talked many, many, many times before about drugs and alcohol and addiction, both his father and I. We both talked to him about it, and he knows. He would never, ever go down that road.

OK, OK, but did you always do what your parents warned you not to do? I know I didn’t. Kids, they don’t listen. They make their own mistakes, and they learn the hard way.

Alex… I hear what you’re saying. But I can’t go there right now. I just have to believe what my son is telling me.

OK. I’m sorry for being cynical. He’s your son. You know him better than anybody, and if you choose to believe him, so do I. Come over here.

[sighs]

Whoa, chilly out here.

Yeah, it was chilly in there. She should have locked Tate in his room.

Oh, stop it, will you? You both could have handled things a little bit better.

Me? How could I have handled things any better?

Oh. With trying to take the rap? That always works out well, doesn’t it?

I hope I didn’t screw up his case and make him look like he–he was trying to hide something.

Son, everyone knows that you were trying to protect your boy here. That’s what good parents do.

Dad, I– look, I got to say this out loud, or I’m gonna blow up. It’s not possible, is it? After all Theresa and I did to make sure that that kid did not follow in our footsteps, he did not do drugs with Holly, did he? It’s not possible.

You know sometimes kids make mistakes. Now, if–if Tate did do drugs, you, Theresa, and this army that you have as a family will rally around him to make sure that he gets the help he needs. But I’m telling you something, son. My gut says that young man is telling the truth.

I pray you’re right.

How can you be so sure it was Tate that gave Holly the drugs?

Because he’s a little punk. He’s nothing but trouble.

[sighs] OK, look, there’s something I got to tell you, Dad. On Christmas Eve, Holly got drunk while you and Nicole were at Green Mountain.

How do you know? You saw her?

She called me, completely plastered.

How come I didn’t know about this?

Because kids don’t tell their parents everything.

[sighs]

Anyway, I–I rushed over. I tucked her in, made sure she was OK.

And you saw her drunk?

Yes.

[sighs] Damn. Nicole didn’t think it was a good idea to leave Holly alone for her birthday, and it obviously wasn’t.

It’s just, Holly, she was just trying to be supportive, you know, of you and Nicole. She didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. She didn’t want to be selfish.

[sighs]

After that night, I just–man, I– I could have kept a closer eye on her. You know, I was at that party. I could have at least made sure she was OK.

Don’t–don’t be ridiculous. This is nobody’s fault but Tate’s.

Mm, nothing makes me happier than seeing that smile on your face.

You had a big smile on your face when I walked in on you two this morning. I’m really sorry I interrupted.

Oh, well, don’t be. Things weren’t going any further than that kiss that you walked in on. But you say that you had a sweet night with Johnny? What did you two do?

Oh, we just shared a little… late-night dessert.

[vocalizing]

[sultry music]

* Got to keep * * The dream alive *

[vocalizing] * Keeping the dream alive * * I’m keeping the dream alive * * Keep the dream alive * * Alive *

[vocalizing]

Yeah, and Johnny said that he’d love to have late-night dessert more often.

Mm.

[chuckles] Well, you tell him to be careful. It’s not always such a good idea to eat something rich so late at night.

* Keeping the dream alive *

What? What did I say?

* The dream alive *

Dad, if Holly was drinking and you didn’t know about it, isn’t it possible that she could have been doing other things too?

Holly’s not like that. She’s a good kid.

Good kids do drugs. It happens. OK, look, Tate was there for Holly. I’m the one who told her to lean on Tate. I’m just saying, if you’re gonna be mad at Tate, then you should be mad at me too.

[dramatic music]

[phone ringing]

I have to answer this.

Is there any news?

No, not yet.

Theresa… I’m–I’m sorry for jumping down your throat earlier. It was not your fault that Tate snuck out.

Thank you. Justin’s right. Emotions are really running high right now. Tate, how did it go?

Hey.

I made bail.

He made bail!

He can go home.

Oh, God.

Oh, thank God. Oh, thank God.

Oh, my God, thank God.

See, kid? It’s all right. It’s all right. It’s all right. It’s all right.

Thank you.

Mmm. Abe, that was so good.

Oh, well, thank you.

Mm-hmm. Yup, I’m gonna have to fix that for Johnny but with the biscuits and gravy, you know, how Mama taught you how to make last year. Remember?

But, oh, hey, who needs those added carbs, carbs, carbs?

I’ll have to learn how to make that again.

I’m really sorry, Abe. I am such a dope. I wasn’t thinking.

No, no, I’m just thinking about Holly. I was just wondering how she was doing.

I know. Such a tragedy.

Yeah, Johnny said he’d call. He was supposed to tell me how she’s doing.

Well, I’m sure he’ll call as soon as he can.

No, no, I’m just glad Holly moved on to Tate instead of mooning over Johnny. Oh, at least Tate’s her own age.

Yeah, but did Tate give her the drugs? Because if he did, then he could be in some big trouble.

Oh, I tell you, my heart goes out to Holly. I mean, this drug epidemic is just– just out of control. I mean, people–people are overdosing every day and dying.

I wish I knew how to stop it.

You’re doing the best you can, Mama.

[sighs] You know, when I got the report of another OD this morning, I had no idea it was someone we knew. Oh, this is so close to home.

You know, I better get over to the hospital and– Nicole might need my help.

Oh, you’re a good man, Abe Carver. I’m going to go and call and find out what exactly happened to that girl. Rafe should be able to tell me more by now.

[phone rings]

Hey, Chanel, it’s– it’s me.

Hey. Hey, baby. How’s Holly?

Not good. She’s in a coma. She’s hooked up to all these tubes. She almost died.

Oh–oh, my God. What–what happened?

She OD’d outside the Bistro on the back loading dock right after we left. They had to give her naloxone…twice.

Oh, God. I wish that we would have gone with Tate when he was looking for her.

Yeah, me too.

So–so she was using? Were–were the drugs hers or Tate’s?

I don’t know. You know, nobody knows. My dad sure seems to think Tate is responsible. I just–I left. I told him I’d come back later.

Oh, OK. Well, I–I’m here with Mama and–and Abe, and she shared with me what happened last night.

Interesting. We never got breakfast. Do you want to meet at the pub now?

Yeah, yeah, sure. I’ve already eaten, but I’ll meet you there. And I want to hear more about Holly and Tate. So–so where is Tate now?

[sighs] Not sure. All I know is that my dad is bound and determined to hold Tate responsible for what happened to Holly. He’s furious, enraged, actually. I just–I don’t know, I hope he doesn’t do anything crazy.

[dramatic music]

I know. I know you don’t.

Wow. Well, looks like a New Year’s party in here.

Oh, better than that.

Well, it is, thanks to Justin.

Yeah, congrats again, Dad.

Thanks, Alex.

Yeah, Justin, thank you so much.

Really, it was just the arraignment.

I know, but with EJ in charge, it could have gone wrong. Who knows what could have happened in there?

This is great news, and I’m gonna put on a big lunch for everybody here, especially you, kiddo.

[clicks tongue]

All right. So hey, can we–can we leave and get out of here?

Actually, no. You need to hang here. I got to pick up the release papers from the court. Be right back.

OK.

Tate, you need to get some rest, OK?

[phone ringing]

Yeah, yeah, but right now, I really just want Holly to be OK.

I hear you. Excuse me.

Well, Alex, Theresa, apparently, we’re gonna have a big old lunch over at the house. So I’d love to have you guys come.

Let’s do it. Thanks, man.

Sure.

I’m so relieved…for now.

Me too, yeah. I know we still have to go to trial and everything, but honestly, I just want to get out of here.

I know, I know. Hey, one step at a time. But, buddy, you, you’re coming home. You’re coming home.

[laughter]

I just got a call from the assistant district attorney.

And I just got a call from the judge. He’s reversed his decision, and your bail’s been revoked. Sorry, Tate, you’re not going anywhere. I’ve got to take you back into custody.

Recap written by Michele and Cheryl

Tate panicked when he tried to find Holly. He found her on the ground. She was having a seizure when he saw her. He took her pills when the police showed up. Tate put the pills in his pocket while they took care of Holly. Brady interrupted Alex and Theresa while they were making out because he couldn’t find Tate. He searched for Tate. Tate texted Brady because he needed help at the docks. Brady rushed to get to him. Nicole and EJ rang in the new year by making love. She felt it was what she needed to fell better. Nicole thought talking to Marlena about her feelings helped her. She was grateful for what she had in life. EJ and Holly were enough for her. He believed it would be a good year. Stefan thanked everyone for being at the Bistro. He started a toast to an engaged couple when he heard police sirens. Ava approached him to let him know that Holly OD’d on the loading dock. Theresa panicked because she didn’t know where Tate was. People crowded around the docks while the paramedics helped Holly. Brady arrived at the docks, so Tate filled him in about what happened to Holly. He showed Brady the bag Holly had with her. An officer told Tate that he would take the bag from him. Rafe and Harris arrived and wanted to question Tate. He told them it belonged to Holly. Rafe was shocked and called Nicole. Paulina told Abe about her condition. She assured him that she could beat it. He believed she could do it. Harris questioned Ava about what happened. Stefan got involved when he started grilling her. Harris started questioning him too. They denied seeing drugs getting sold in Salem. Harris walked away from them.

Tate and Brady rushed to the hospital to check on Holly. They found out she was being treated in the trauma room. Tate was afraid that he was in trouble. Nicole arrived at the hospital and wanted to see Holly. Tripp tried to help Holly when Nicole went in the trauma room. The nurse tried to make her leave. After he worked on her, Tripp told Nicole that Holly was stable but she was in a coma. She needed to be on a ventilator. Alex and Theresa arrived at the hospital. She hugged Tate. Tate lashed at her when she asked him if he was okay. Brady consoled him. Alex asked Theresa if Tate was checked out. She wondered if he thought Tate was tested. Theresa was shocked that he thought Tate was using drugs. Alex wondered how she didn’t think he was involved. Theresa assured him that Tate didn’t do drugs. Alex wasn’t sure about that. She wasn’t thrilled with what he said and wanted him to go home. After Alex left, Theresa asked Tate if he was using drugs. Rafe showed up to question Tate. He advised Tate about getting a lawyer. Brady didn’t think Tate needed a lawyer because he’s innocent. Tate wanted to talk to Rafe alone. Tripp pulled Rafe aside. He let him know that it wasn’t looking good for Holly. Stefan assured Ava that what happened to Holly wasn’t their fault. She wasn’t convinced it wasn’t there fault. Stefan didn’t like it, but Clyde had them over a barrel. Tripp told Rafe that Holly didn’t have much brain activity. He confirmed that she was in a coma because of the drugs. Rafe wanted to question Tate again. He explained what happened even telling him that she had the pills in her had. EJ arrived and said that Tate was wrong. Holly didn’t do drugs.

Days of Our Lives Update

Update written by Joseph

Chad and Julie are awoken at the Horton house by knocking at the door and they answer to see Everett, who tells Chad that he needs to talk to him. Chad asks what the hell is so important. Everett then informs him that Holly Jonas overdosed last night.

Eric watches over baby Jude at home. Sloan joins him and says she slept through the night for the first time since Jude came in to their lives. Eric says he slept well too. They talk about getting used to Jude waking up in the middle of the night. Eric mentions missing that when he thought he and Sarah’s daughter lived, so he wants to cherish the time with Jude. Eric talks about when he came in to Holly’s life and knowing she would do something great with her life. Sloan comments that she’s sure Nicole is very proud. Eric states that Holly is Nicole’s pride and joy.

Nicole sits at Holly’s bedside in her hospital room. Nicole talks about how Holly looked so beautiful and happy the night before going to the party but she was deluding herself because Holly couldn’t have been okay. Nicole talks about feeling sorry for herself and not seeing the signs. Nicole cries for Holly to forgive her.

Kayla sits with Marlena at the hospital and tells her there’s still no change in Holly’s condition which is not a great way to start the new year. Marlena calls it so sad after all that Nicole has been through. Marlena adds that she spoke to John and found out that Tate has been arrested for possession of the drugs that caused Holly’s overdose. Kayla says she’s so sorry. Marlena notes that EJ is determined to prosecute anyone that had anything to do with what happened to Holly. Kayla feels that’s just like EJ to want revenge regardless of the tragedy. Marlena mentions that John talked to Paulina in hopes of being a voice for Tate. Kayla points out it being obvious that the drugs were Holly’s while Marlena notes that Tate panicked and didn’t call for help sooner. Kayla acknowledges that delay could have affected the severity of Holly’s condition. Marlena can’t imagine what’s going to happen if Nicole loses Holly and doesn’t know how she would go on. Kayla asks how Tate would go on if he thinks he might be responsible.

Stefan stands outside the Bistro, wondering how the hell he ended up here. EJ appears and accuses Stefan of doing this to Holly. Stefan tells EJ to back off as he didn’t do a damn thing to her. EJ argues that when Stefan got involved with Ava, it destroyed what humanity he had left. EJ blames Stefan for the fact that Holly might not see another day. Stefan shouts that his hands are clean and if it’s anyone’s fault, it’s EJ’s. EJ argues that Holly overdosed on Stefan’s drugs. Stefan reminds EJ that he begged him for help but he turned his back on him when he was the one person who could have helped him get rid of Clyde. Stefan tells EJ to look in the mirror if he wants to be mad at somebody.

Kayla and Marlena join Nicole in Holly’s hospital room. Kayla informs Nicole that the drugs are out of Holly’s system and they have strong brain function but she has to stay on the ventilator and it’s a bit of a waiting game now. Marlena tells Nicole that she can’t imagine how difficult this must be for her. Nicole acknowledges that it’s difficult for EJ too as he loves Holly so much and he’s determined to make someone pay for what happened. Nicole knows right now that someone is Tate and tells Marlena that she’s sorry. Marlena says she is sorry too since Tate was never involved with drugs or even drank after what he saw of his own parents addiction. Nicole never thought Holly would use drugs either but guesses she wasn’t paying close enough attention. Nicole acknowledges that Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve, but thought that was only to escape the grief of losing her brother and thought it was a one time thing. Nicole didn’t think it was a big deal and cries that she feels so guilty because she let her own grief consume her and now her precious daughter was just an afterthought. Marlena encourages Nicole not to be hard on herself as that just makes it more difficult. Nicole responds that she doesn’t care if it’s difficult for her or about herself at all anymore as she just cares about her daughter. Kayla reminds Nicole that she is important and needs to stay strong for her daughter as she hugs her. Marlena steps out to make a call.

Sloan and Eric talk about their baby growing until Eric gets a call from Marlena. Eric wishes her a Happy New Year but Marlena says she’s calling with bad news. Marlena informs Eric that Holly overdosed last night and is in a coma. Marlena knows how much Holly means to Eric and says she’s sorry to pull him away from his family right now, but she thinks Holly and Nicole need him right now. Eric says he’ll be right there and hangs up. Eric then informs Sloan that Holly overdosed so he has to get to the hospital and rushes to get ready. Sloan asks if they know Holly’s condition yet. Eric says no and he’ll call her as soon as he can. Sloan assumes EJ will be there too. Eric doesn’t know but says he just has to get there because Holly’s like a daughter to him. Eric repeats that he’ll call her as soon as he can and rushes out. Sloan then gets a credit card alert on her phone, asking if she authorized a $1200 bottle of champagne. Sloan angrily tells Jude that they are going on a field trip.

Nicole asks Kayla if she thinks it helps when she talks to Holly and if she can hear her. Kayla says definitely and suggests Nicole continue talking to her while she goes to check on the test results. Kayla adds that there are nurses outside if she needs anything. Nicole thanks Kayla as she exits. Nicole sits with Holly and talks about her birth.

Kayla runs in to Marlena, who tells her that she just texted John and called Eric about Holly, so Eric is on his way. Kayla hopes that EJ is okay with that because the last thing Nicole needs is a confrontation between them. Marlena says that EJ obviously wants to prosecute Tate, but she hopes that Eric can be a help and comfort since he was Holly’s stepfather, so she knows he’d want to be there for her and Nicole.

EJ questions Stefan blaming him for this when it was Stefan’s decision to let Clyde call the shots which he had nothing to do. Stefan shouts that he did that to prevent Gabi from being further injured or killed. EJ complains that it doesn’t change the fact that he’s still running opioid laced drugs out of the Bistro. EJ screams that the poison might have gotten his stepdaughter killed. EJ accuses Stefan of endangering the lives of thousands of people including children, all to protect one person who is in prison for murder. EJ asks Stefan for one good reason not to have him arrested right now.

Chad asks what else Everett knows. Everett informs Chad and Julie that Holly overdosed at the Bistro party and was rushed to the hospital emergency room. Julie asks if she’s going to make it. Everett wishes he knew but says he only knows that she’s in a coma. Julie asks what is happening in Salem and where all these drugs are coming from. Everett says it’s getting worse by the minute and apparently the police are stumped by the drug ring. Everett declares that they need to get to the bottom of this, expose the players, and bust this story wide open.

Sloan goes to Leo’s room at the Salem Inn and questions him about the $1200 bottle of champagne. Sloan tells Leo that he can’t keep doing this. Leo points out that she failed to authorize the charge so he had to settle for a subpar bottle so now he has a headache. Sloan warns that he’ll need a bigger bottle of aspirin when she’s done with him.

Everett tells Chad that they both know the reach that the Spectator has and that investigative journalism is the cornerstone of it’s success. Chad says that’s something they agree on. Everett thinks they can also agree that getting this out there can save lives which Chad confirms. Everett takes that as a green light to get started. Chad asks what he needs from him. Everett explains that people might not talk for free so he needs access for a petty cash fund and that $5000 should do it.

Stefan tells EJ that he will implicate him in this entire thing if he arrests him and that won’t be a stretch given EJ’s trafficking history with Clyde. Stefan asks how can EJ not see that they are on the same side in this with a common enemy in Clyde and that EJ is the one person who could help get rid of him, unless he wants Nicole to find out that he could’ve stopped this by not doing a damn thing to get the drugs off the street. EJ says that Stefan doesn’t get to put this on him because everything that happened is because of him. EJ declares that Stefan made his choice and now it’s up to him to clean up the mess on his own. EJ warns that he better do it fast because if he doesn’t, he will take him down.

Eric joins Nicole in Holly’s hospital room. Nicole is surprised to see him. Eric explains that Marlena called him. Nicole says it’s good that he’s there. Eric says she knows he loves Holly and asks what the doctors said. Nicole tells him that Holly is stable and there is brain activity so it’s just a waiting game. Nicole cries that she can’t lose her and talks about Holly being her joy with her whole life ahead of her. Nicole states that she can’t lose another child as her heart can’t take it.

Chad questions Everett asking for $5000. Everett explains that money is basically the only way to get people talk when dealing with criminals if they want the truth and they have to get the drug dealers to talk. Julie questions how they get drug dealers to talk. Everett assures that he can do this, so Chad decides he’s behind him 100% if he’s willing to take the risk for the story.

Stefan asks if EJ does not comprehend the stupidity behind this and says he’s signing Salem’s death warrant if he puts him behind bars. EJ doesn’t think he gives a damn. Stefan declares that they need to make this right for Holly. EJ says Stefan doesn’t get to say that after what he’s done. EJ talks about Nicole being in the hospital next to her comatose child because of the drugs Stefan is running. Stefan shouts about watching Holly get carted off in an ambulance and says his heart is breaking for Holly, Nicole, and EJ because he knows how much they are hurting right now especially after the loss of their son.

Sloan tells Leo that she can’t afford all this expensive crap he keeps buying and it will arouse Eric’s suspicions when her credit card keeps getting rejected. Leo tells Sloan that last night, he was celebrating some very good news and announces that Lady Whistleblower is back so he’s going to have his own money. Leo warns that if Sloan doesn’t play her cards correctly, he will spill her dirty little secrets all over Salem.

Nicole starts talking about how she’s not talking about goodbyes anymore and encourages that Holly is going to come out of this and live her life. Eric says they will pray for that. They start to pray until Holly’s monitors go off and she starts having a seizure, so Eric runs to the door and calls for doctors and nurses to help.

Chad informs Everett that the money has been sent. Everett says he really appreciates it and it looks like he’s on a mission. Everett apologizes for waking them. Julie tells him to forget about that and go save some lives. Chad wishes him luck as Everett then exits. Julie hopes the $5000 buys the answers they want, but worries that Everett will be in harm’s way and asks if Chad is concerned about that. Chad thinks Everett can handle that and reveals that in 2006, he covered the Israel war. Julie notes that he must have been very young. Chad confirms that Everett really is a fantastic journalist, so he has a lot of respect for him. Julie calls it admirable to see that as it must have been hard when he walked back in Stephanie’s life. Chad admits that it was, but he adjusted and he and Stephanie aren’t together anymore so he can’t see him as a threat. Chad brings up that the Spectator meant so much to Abigail, so he’s grateful that Everett is on staff, especially now. Chad hopes that Everett telling a story that needs to be told is going to make their city safer for his kids and everyone. Julie responds that Abigail would be so proud and says she is too.

Leo tells Sloan that it’s no surprise that he got his old job back as he was wildly popular, but he’s excited to be busy again. Sloan warns that she’s about to break his heart and sends him a financial fitness app, so now she will decide how much he uses per month. Sloan adds that if she goes broke, his ride ends with no champagne or roof over his head.

EJ asks Stefan how dense he thinks he is and says he sees through him trying to manipulate him by pretending that his heart is breaking for him. EJ argues that Stefan doesn’t give a damn about him and never has. Stefan calls him a cold son of a bitch. EJ tells Stefan that he’s wasting his time if he thinks he’s ever going to forgive him for what he’s done and his part in hurting his family. Everett then shows up and says he’s sorry to interrupt. Everett introduces himself and says he works for the Spectator. Everett asks if EJ has a few minutes for some questions but EJ says he doesn’t and walks away.

Kayla asks Nicole and Eric to step outside as she promises to do everything she can for Holly. Eric hugs Nicole as she prays for Holly to make it. Eric promises that Holly is in good hands as Nicole cries. Marlena comes over so Eric explains that Holly is having a seizure. Kayla comes out and informs them that Holly is stabilized, so she allows them back in.

Everett tells Stefan that he’s sorry for interrupting. Stefan says it was helpful because the conversation was going nowhere. Everett reminds Stefan that they met at the party last night. Everett brings up the uptick in overdoses including one that happened last night and asks if there’s anything Stefan would like to say on the matter. Stefan states that he’s deeply sorry for what happened on his loading dock, but he’s just the business owner and he has no control over people’s desires or what happens out on the dock. Stefan says they will add extra security detail to the property. Everett asks if he can quote him on that. Stefan says sure. Everett asks if he feels responsible in any way for what happened to Holly. Stefan says not one bit but he does feel sad for Holly and Nicole.

Julie tells Chad that the kids are playing board games while Doug is enjoying his coffee and reading. They talk about Abigail having favorite novels and being an avid reader. Chad talks about how sometimes he still suspects Abigail is going to come back. Chad would think the longer she’s gone, the more real her death would be and the more he’d be able to accept it, but it’s the opposite. Chad states that the more time that goes by, the more shocking it is that he’s never going to see her face again. Julie wishes she could say words to comfort him that he hasn’t already heard. Julie encourages that Abigail will always be in his heart and in his children too. Julie talks about Charlotte having Abigail’s smile. Chad feels Thomas has her eyes and sense of humor. Julie says she was going to wait for Doug, but as she gets older, she has no patience. Julie then asks Chad if he would consider moving back in with them and the children. Julie says they love Thomas and Charlotte so much and would love to have them around. Julie points out that if Chad lived here with them, they could take care of the kids while Chad is at work and they’d be glad to share some of that responsibility with him. Julie asks what Chad says. Chad responds that he’s grateful and touched by the offer, so he accepts. Julie calls that wonderful as they hug. Julie understands how shattered he was when he lost Abigail as she was a light to all of them and she knew the most important thing in life is to give and accept love. Julie tells Chad that he has so much life ahead of him because he has so much love to give and receive.

Leo complains about Sloan thinking she can put him on a budget and asks how he knows she’s not doing that for selfish purposes to save money. Sloan insists it’s the truth. Leo brings up Jude being Nicole’s child and not Sloan’s. Sloan warns that if Leo keeps spending her money, it will ruin everything for the both of them. Leo reluctantly gives in and agrees to the budget. Sloan says that means they both continue to get what they want, so they shake hands on a deal.

Kayla tells Eric and Nicole that she is having a specialist look at the tests but Holly is stable now. Nicole asks about the seizure. Kayla calls it common in drug withdrawal but it shouldn’t cause permanent damage and the seizure was very brief. Nicole thanks her. Kayla says if there’s any change, she will be nearby as she then exits. Nicole knows she should feel comfort in what Kayla said, but her baby is still in a coma and she needs her to wake up. Eric encourages that she will and calls Nicole a wonderful, strong mom. Eric declares that he’s here for Nicole and Holly. Nicole thanks him as they hug. EJ then enters the room and sees them.

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[knocking at door]

What the hell is this knocking?

[doorbell ringing]

And the ringing. I’m surprised it didn’t wake up Doug and the kids.

Or the dead.

[knocking at door]

I got it. I got it. I got it. Who is it?

Chad, it’s Everett. I need to talk to you.

What in the hell is so important?

Holly Jonas OD’d last night.

[tense music]

[baby cooing]

Well, look at you, all quiet and happy. You know why that is, don’t you? Because you slept through the night. So if you can keep this thing going, that’d be really helpful. You know that, big guy?

[chuckles]

And I don’t know about you, but I slept through the night too, first time since Jude came into our lives.

Good, I slept well too.

Although, I will admit, I kind of miss him waking up in the middle of the night. You know, it was cute. We’d rock him and get him– give him his bottles, back to sleep.

Yeah, I miss that too, especially with–

Especially with what?

Well, I missed that with Mickey. I mean, she was older than Jude when I came into her life– when I thought she was mine. And she was sick back then. So I just– right now with Jude, I just really want to savor that time.

I understand. How old was Holly when you came into her life?

She was just a little girl when– well, she was just–

[laughs] she was just smart, curious, I mean, even then– back then, you knew that she was gonna do something great with herself.

I’m sure Nicole is really proud.

Yeah. Holly is her pride and joy.

[machine beeping]

You looked so beautiful last night when you went to the party. You seemed so happy.

[sighs] But that was just me deluding myself, wasn’t I? Because you couldn’t have been happy or even OK. I mean, how– honey, how– how did I not see it? How– how– how did I not see the signs? I mean, there must have been signs, right? Oh, I’m just feeling so damn sorry for myself that I didn’t see them. And– and now I– oh, honey. Please forgive me. Oh, god. Please forgive Mommy.

Hey, Marlena.

Oh, hi. Still no change in Holly’s condition?

No, I’m sorry to say, not a great way to start the new year.

It is so sad. After all that Nicole has been through, to have to go through this– oh, I spoke to John. Tate’s been arrested.

What?

Yeah, for possession of the drugs that caused Holly’s overdose.

Oh. I’m so sorry.

I am too. And EJ is determined to prosecute anybody that had anything to do with his stepdaughter.

Isn’t that just like him, just to want revenge even though he’s just compounding the tragedy?

Yeah.

[sighs]

You know, John spoke to Paulina, hoping she might be able to– to do something. And maybe he could even be a voice for Tate.

Well, good for him. But isn’t that just too much “a voice for Tate?” I mean, it is clear that Holly was the one that took the medication that was not prescribed to her.

Yes, that’s true. But then Tate panicked and didn’t call for help soon enough.

And then that delay could have led to the severity of her condition.

Yeah. Mm. You know, talking to Nicole, she– she refers to Holly as her joy. I can’t imagine what’s gonna happen if– if she loses that little girl, especially after losing her son. I just– I don’t even know how she’ll go on.

And how will Tate go on when he thinks he might be responsible?

[sighs]

[sighs] How the hell did I end up here?

You! You did this to her. You did this to my daughter, you son of a bitch!

You need to back off. And I didn’t do a damn thing to your stepdaughter.

The hell you didn’t. When you got involved with Ava Vitali, it obviously destroyed whatever bit of humanity was left. That beautiful, young woman might not live to see another day thanks to your complete lack of conscience!

OK, first of all, you talking to me about a lack of conscience is downright laughable! Secondly, my hands are clean in this. If this is anybody’s fault, it’s yours, brother.

[scoffs]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

My fault?

Yeah.

My fault that Holly OD’d on your drugs. Are you out of your mind?

I asked for your help, remember? I begged you for your help! And you turned your back on me. Damn it, EJ! You are the one person who could help me get rid of Clyde, and you couldn’t be bothered. So if you want to be mad at somebody, look in the mirror!

So all the drugs are out of our system now?

They are, yes. And we have strong brain function.

And– and the ventilator?

Yes, she has to stay on that.

For how long?

Uh, we don’t know yet at the moment. But all I can say, it’s a bit of a waiting game right now.

[machine beeping]

Nicole, I can’t even imagine how difficult this is for you.

It’s difficult for EJ too. He– he also loves Holly so much. And I know he is determined to make someone pay for whatever happened. And I know right now that someone is Tate. And I’m sorry, Marlena.

I am too, especially since Tate was never involved with drugs. He never even drank after the example that he saw of his own parents’ addiction.

Right. Well, I never thought Holly would use drugs either. But I guess I wasn’t paying close enough attention. And you know what? Yes, she did get drunk on Christmas Eve. But I– I just thought that was only to escape the grief that she was feeling for the loss of her brother and the sadness of her mother falling apart. And I– I just thought it was a one-time thing. I– I didn’t– I didn’t think it was a big deal. And I– god, I feel–

[sobs] I just– I feel so guilty because I let my own grief consume me. And now my precious daughter was just an– an afterthought?

Nicole, please don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re just making it more difficult on yourself.

Oh, god. You know what? Now, I don’t care if it’s difficult for me. You know, I don’t– I don’t care about me at all anymore. I just– I just care about my precious daughter. That’s all I care about.

Nicole, you are important. You need to stay strong for your daughter. And when she comes back to us, she’s gonna need you.

Excuse me. I’ve got to make a call.

[sobbing]

I know what they say. It gets better and better as they get older. They walk and they talk, but I–

[chuckles]

Look at his little, toothless smile. Oh, and the cooing sound he makes– I don’t know. I think this is my favorite.

You and me both.

[phone rings] Mm. It’s my mom.

Hi.

Hey, Mom, happy new year.

Hi, darling. I’m– I’m calling with some bad news.

[sighs] I’m afraid Holly overdosed last night. She’s in a coma.

Oh, my god, no.

I know how much she means to you and you to her. Darling, I’m– I’m sorry to pull you away from your family right now. But I think she needs you, and Nicole does too.

I’ll be right there. OK, bye.

[phone beeps] Listen, it’s Holly. she OD’d. I got to get to the hospital.

[sighs]

Hey, do they know Holly’s condition yet? Have you heard?

I don’t know the details. But I will call you as soon as I know more, OK?

OK, and I assume EJ is gonna be there too?

I don’t know. Listen, I just got to be there for Holly because she’s like a daughter to me, OK? All right, I’ll call you as soon as I can.

OK.

[sighs]

[phone chimes] Credit card alert. What? “Did you authorize the following charges?” $, champagne? Son of a bitch.

[sighs] Jude, we are going on a field trip.

Do you think it helps when I talk to her? I mean, she– she can hear me, right?

Definitely. Why don’t you stay here and talk to her? And I will go check on the results of the test that we did, OK? There’s nurses right outside if you need anything.

Thank you, Kayla.

Yeah.

[machine beeping]

[somber music] Hey, baby. I know you like when I tell you the story about the night you were born. And I love to tell it to you because it reminds me of the feeling I had when I held you in my arms for the first time. And your little shriveled up nose and your face, it seemed so beautiful to me, honey, and so perfect. But even before then, before I had the honor of helping to deliver you– oh, I’ll tell you something, little one. You could not wait to come into this world and during a snowstorm no less.

[chuckles]

Hey.

Hey. I just– I just sent John a text updating him on Holly. I called Eric. He’s on his way in.

Good. I just hope that EJ’s OK with that. I mean, I think the last thing Nicole needs is some kind of confrontation between the two of them.

Yes. Obviously, EJ wants to prosecute Tate. I’m just hoping that Eric can– can be of some help here, can be of some comfort. I mean, he was– he was her stepfather. And I know he’d want to be there for her and– and for Nicole.

How dare you blame me for any of this? It was your decision to let Clyde Weston call the shots. I had nothing to do with that!

What, EJ, you think I let Clyde call the shots because it was fun? No, I let Clyde call the shots so my wife wouldn’t get further injured or, God forbid, killed!

And that doesn’t change the fact that you are still running opioid-laced drugs out of the Bistro. That poison might have got my stepdaughter killed!

The hands the drugs wind up in, it’s beyond my control.

Oh, my god. You are kidding me! And you think that somehow exonerates you? You are endangering the lives of thousands of people, Stefan, including children, all to protect one person who is in prison for murder! You give me one damn good reason why I shouldn’t have you arrested right now?

What else do you know? Where did Holly OD?

At the Bistro, apparently, after the New Year’s Eve party.

Oh, is she gonna make it?

I wish I knew. All I know is, she was rushed to the ER from the party. And now she’s in a coma.

[gasps] God, what is happening in Salem? Where are all these drugs coming from?

Not just Salem, the whole country.

And getting worse by the minute. Apparently, the police force is stumped by this new ring.

Yeah, I heard that too.

Well, obviously, we need to get to the bottom of this, expose the players, and bust this story wide open.

[tense music]

[knocking at door]

Oh, I don’t need any towels! Thank you.

Oh, my god. Hey!

What?

$,–

[groans]

–on a bottle of champagne? What the hell is the matter with you?

Oh, language, please. We are in the presence of a precious and impressionable child.

You can’t keep doing this, Leo.

Yeah, obviously not, Mommie Dearest. You failed to authorize the charge. So I had to settle for a bottle of subpar bubbles and are now starting the new year off with a miserable headache. I hope you’re happy.

Well, you’re gonna need an even bigger bottle of aspirin whenever I’m done with you.

Look, we both know the far reach “The Spectator” has and that investigative journalism is the cornerstone to its success.

Something that we agree on.

And I think we can also agree that getting this out there can actually save lives.

We also agree on that, yeah.

Great, great. Then I will take that as a green light to get started.

OK. What do you need from me?

OK, so I have some CIs who are willing to talk. But those answers don’t come for free. I need access to a petty cash fund.

How much?

K should do it.

[tense music]

You want reason why you shouldn’t arrest me, EJ?

Mm.

I’ll give you a damn good reason. And that is, I will implicate you in this entire thing.

[scoffs]

And that won’t be a stretch now, will it? It’ll actually be a slam dunk given your trafficking history with Clyde Weston. I mean, damn it. EJ, how can you not see that we are on the same side in this? We have a common enemy in Clyde Weston. And you are the one person who can help me get rid of him, unless you want Nicole to find out that you could have stopped all of this, that you knew about the drugs that might have killed her daughter. And you didn’t do a damn thing to keep them off the streets.

[chuckles] No. No. No, no, no, no. You do not get to put this on me. Everything that has happened is because of you and your distorted sense of right and wrong. You did this to the family. You made your choice. And now, it’s on you to clean up this mess on your own. And you better do it fast, because if you don’t, I’ll take you down for good.

[dramatic music]

[machine beeping]

[somber music]

Nicole.

Oh. Oh, Eric. You came.

Yeah, my mom, she called me.

It’s– it’s good that you’re here.

Of course I’m here. I love Holly. You know that.

She loves you too.

What do the doctors say?

[sighs] Well, she said that she’s– she’s stable. And there’s brain activity. So now it’s just a– a waiting game. Oh, god, I– I can’t lose her, Eric. I can’t. I mean, she’s– she’s my precious girl. She’s my joy. And I know that I say that all the time, but it’s true. And she’s got her whole life ahead of her. And I ju– I can’t lose another child. My– my– my heart can’t take it.

$,?

Money is the quickest way to get information, basically, the only way to get information when you’re dealing with these kinds of criminals. You want the truth? You’ve got to get the drug dealers to talk.

And how do you get a drug dealer to talk to you? Do you wait in a dark, shadowy alley and then wait for him to come slithering out?

If I have to, yeah. Trust me. I can do this.

Yeah, OK. OK. I mean, if you’re willing to take the risk for the story, then I’m behind you, %.

[sighs]

Damn it, EJ. Do you not comprehend the utter stupidity of what you’re saying right now? Do you not see that if you put me away for this, you are signing Salem’s death warrant?

Oh, please. You don’t give a damn about this town.

What I give a damn about is the people living in it. And right now, at the top of that list is Holly Jonas! You and I, we need to make this right for her.

You know what? You don’t get to say that, not after what you’ve done. My wife is in the hospital next to her comatose child because of the drugs you are running.

You think I don’t know that? I was here! I watched her get carted off in an ambulance! And contrary to what you believe about me, EJ, I do have a heart. And it is breaking right now for that little girl and her mother and for you, because I know how much you’re hurting right now, especially after the loss of your son. And my heart breaks for that too.

[tense music]

Do you understand that I have a very finite amount of money? I can’t afford all this expensive, extravagant crap you keep buying. Not to mention, it’s gonna arouse my husband’s suspicions, you know, when my credit card keeps getting rejected.

OK.

OK. OK what?

Well, last night, I was celebrating some very good news, hence the champagne. And that is that Lady Whistleblower is back, ready to blow the top off this town. So I’m gonna have own spending money. However, that being said, if you don’t play your miserable hand of cards correctly, I’m going to spill your dirty, little secrets all over Salem.

Oh, my god. Oh, my god. What– what– what– what am I doing? I– no. I’m– I’m– I’m not gonna do this anymore. I won’t. No– no more talk of goodbyes. Holly is coming out of this. And– and she’s gonna graduate high school and go to college and have a career and then– and then meet someone that she– she falls in love with and has kids of her own!

Yes, yes, yes. Hey, hey, hey, look at me. Let’s pray for that. OK? OK.

[machine beeping] Dear Lord, our Father, we pray that you look over our best girl here. You have so much love to offer and to receive. And we just pray that you’d be with her. You just be with her as her body heals. Father, we–

[machine beeping rapidly] Hey.

Oh. Oh, my god.

What’s happening?

Honey? Honey, can you hear me?

Oh, no. What’s happening?

I don’t know. What–

She’s having a seizure!

Oh, my– oh, my god.

Nurse!

Honey, honey.

Doctors, please, we need help in here now!

[sobbing] Oh, god, honey, honey. No, please stop.

The money’s been sent.

I really appreciate it, Chad. It looks like I’m on a mission. Thank you so much for the coffee. And again, I’m so sorry about the knocking and the ringing.

Oh, forget about that. Go save some lives.

Good luck.

I certainly hope the $, buys the answers he wants, the answers we all want.

Yeah, you and me both.

You know, he is going to be in harm’s way. Are you concerned about that?

I think he can handle himself. I mean, he was in Beirut in . Apparently, he covered the Israel and Lebanon war, so…

Really?

Yeah.

He must have been very young.

Young and intrepid. He really is a fantastic journalist. I have a lot of respect for him. Well, it’s admirable that you have the foresight to see that.

[chuckles]

It must have been hard when he walked back into Stephanie’s life.

Yeah. Yeah, it was. But I adjusted. And Stephanie and I aren’t– aren’t together anymore. So I can’t really see him as a threat, can I?

I suppose not.

And because “The Spectator” meant so much to Abigail that I’m grateful that Everett’s on staff, especially now. And I’m hopeful that what he’s embarking on, telling this story that absolutely needs to be told, is gonna make our city safer for my kids, safer for everyone.

Abigail would be so proud of you. You’re not just a wonderful dad; you’re a caring human being.

[chuckles]

I’m proud of you too.

So they gave you your old job back, huh?

No surprise. The Lady was wildly popular, as you well know. I’m just excited to be busy again, using my writing chops, being creative. And since you’re giving me that scoffy, little frowny face, I will have you know that at a mere age of , I wrote a brilliant and funny short story called “Tifky Schmifky, Garbage Collector”–

I don’t want to hear it.

–which won the Fun Festive Fabled Award, impressed the hell out of my childhood crush, Sky Luke Roylance. Well, he’s the main reason I wrote it. Though, he had a crush on Rachel Fogelhut, which obviously broke my heart.

Well, I’m about to break your heart too. Get ready.

What are you doing?

There.

[phone beeps]

Wait a second. Is that a shirtless picture of your hunky husband?

[chuckles]

What, pray tell, is this?

That is a financial fitness app, Leo. That’s right. You’re now on a monthly stipend. I decide how much. And you’re gonna make it last through the month. Hey, because if I go broke, the ride ends. And that means not only no more champagne, that means no more food in your stomach, no more roof of your head. Get it?

[sighs] How dense do you think I am, Stefan? You don’t think I see through you?

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

You’re trying to manipulate me, pretending that your heart is breaking for me, which, even if you had a heart, is kind of impossible, given that you don’t give a damn about me and never have.

Wow. You are one cold son of a bitch.

Hmm. And you are wasting your time if you think I am ever going to forgive you for what you’ve done– for your part in hurting my family, for your part in adding to the excruciating pain my wife has already suffered.

Oh, hi. I– I’m so sorry to be interrupting. You’re EJ DiMera, right?

I am. And you are?

I’m Everett Lynch. I work for “The Spectator.” I’d love to ask you a few questions if you have a few minutes.

I don’t.

Stay with us, baby. Stay with us.

I need milligrams Diazepam.

Oh, honey, you’re gonna be OK.

OK, I need you to step outside please. Please.

Help her, Kayla, please.

I’ll do everything I can. Please, come on.

Let’s go.

Nurse, thank you.

[machine beeping rapidly]

Please, God, don’t take my baby. Please, I will do anything.

Hey, shh-shh-shh.

Please don’t take her. Let her live.

[sobs]

She’s in good hands.

Please.

Nicole, I promise that Holly’s in good hands.

Oh, god.

[tense music]

[panting]

Shh.

Eric, Nicole.

Mom, hey. Holly is having a seizure, which is why we’re out here.

Oh. Oh, I see.

What happened? How’s Holly?

Holly is stabilized. So if you want to come back in with me, you can.

OK.

OK, yes.

Thank you.

Again, I’m– I’m so sorry for interrupting.

No worries. Actually, kind of helpful because that conversation was going nowhere.

[chuckles] Everett Lynch. We met at the party last night, actually.

Right. Now if you’ll excuse me–

Before you go, as you may know, there’s been a serious uptick in ODs in Salem, actually, all over the country, including the one that happened right here last night. Just wondering if you have anything you’d like to say on the matter.

Well, uh, yeah. I– I am deeply sorry for what happened here on my loading dock. But I am just the business owner. I have no control over people’s desires, proclivities, afflictions, no control over what happens out here on the dock. And having said that, yeah, we’re gonna add an extra security detail to the property.

OK. Can I quote you on that?

Sure.

Do you feel in any way responsible for what happened to Holly Jonas?

Not one bit. What I do feel is deeply saddened for the girl and her mother.

[tense music]

The children are playing board games. Doug is enjoying his coffee and reading for the umpteenth time “Master and Commander.”

[chuckles]

He cannot get enough of the Patrick O’Brian novels.

Oh, my goodness. That was– that was one of Abigail’s favorites. Yeah, I mean, she loved, loved historical fiction in general.

Yes, they had that in common. I remember a wonderful conversation that they had about– about HMS “Surprise.”

Yes.

Yeah.

That was one of her favorites as well.

Yes, she was an avid reader.

That she was.

[somber music] You know something? As cliché as it sounds, I still– I still sometimes expect that she’s gonna come back. You know, that I’ll wake up, and she’ll be– she’ll be lying beside me. Or that, you know, I’m going to get a– a call or a text that she’s– that she’s on her way. So don’t worry. You know, she’ll be home soon, something like that. You’d think that– that the longer she was gone, the– The more real her death would be, the more I’d be able to accept it. But it’s the opposite. It’s the more time that goes by, the more– Shocking it is that I’m never gonna see her face again.

Darling. Darling. I wish I could say words that would comfort you, words that you haven’t heard a thousand times. But I will say Abigail’s always gonna be in your heart. And she’s in your children too. Just last night when I put Charlotte to bed, tucking her in, I told her I loved her. She gave me such a smile.

Mm.

That smile, Abigail was there. It was Abigail’s smile.

Yeah, she’s got Abby’s smile. Thomas has her– her eyes and sense of humor.

Oh, does he ever.

[laughter] Well, I was going to wait until Doug comes downstairs. But I found as I get older, I have no patience whatsoever anymore, so– So, Chad, would you consider moving back here with us and the children?

Moving back in here? Really?

Yeah, really. We love Thomas and Charlotte so much. And if they were around, oh, we’d be sparky. We’d be firing on all cylinders. And I– I– I think they’re comfortable with us.

Oh, are you kidding me? They’re more than comfortable with you. They adore you.

I hope that’s true.

Yes.

Well, if you were living here with them, we could take care of them when you have to work. And then we could pick them up, and take them to school. And– and we would be so glad to share some of that responsibility with you. So what do you say?

I’m– I’m– I’m grateful and– and touched by the offer.

Mm-hmm.

[chuckles] I mean, come on. I accept. I accept.

Oh, wonderful. Oh, wonderful.

[laughs]

Yes.

Oh, you made me so happy.

[laughs] Darling, I do understand how shattered you were when you lost Abigail. I mean, she was a light to all of us. She knew the most important thing in life is for a human being to give and accept love. That’s a gift. You have so much life ahead of you, a full life, because you have so much love to give and receive. You remember that. You hang on to that.

The audacity, the effrontery, the sheer unadulterated chutzpah to think that you could put me on a budget? How do I know you’re not doing this for your own selfish purposes just to save money? How do I know you’re not really rich as Croesus and you’re just crying poor mouth to deprive me of my shopping highs?

You know, you can trust it because it’s the God’s honest truth.

Hmm. Like this little boy is your child and not Nicole’s, that kind of God’s honest truth?

Leo, if you continue to impoverish me by spending recklessly and extravagantly, it’s gonna ruin everything, Hey, for the both of us.

[groans] Fine. As bored and bothered as I am by this and how much it’s already giving me acid reflux and heartburn, I get it. I’ll do it. I’ll do this stupid app-based budget.

Excellent. That means you continue to get what you want out of this arrangement, and I continue to get what I want. Deal?

Dismal, dispiriting, demoralizing deal. But yeah, deal.

[sighs]

I am having one of our neuro specialists take a look at the results from the tests that we’ve done, but for right now, Holly is stable. And that’s a good thing.

And the seizure, why did that happen?

Well, it’s very common to have this kind of complication when there’s been drug intoxication or drug withdrawal. As long as it’s not recurrent or prolonged, it doesn’t it usually cause any permanent brain damage. And as you know, Holly’s was very brief. So that bodes well in her favor.

OK, thank you. Kayla, thank you for explaining that.

Sure. Listen, if there’s any change, I’m nearby, all right?

OK.

OK.

[machine beeping]

[sighs] I know that I’m supposed to feel some comfort in what Kayla said, but my baby girl is still in a coma. And I need her to wake up. I mean, do you think she’s gonna wake up?

Yes. Yes, I do. Nicole, you are a wonderful mom. You’re strong. I’m here for you. And I’m here for Holly.

Thank you for that. Thank you.

[gentle music]

It’s gonna be OK.
