THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

He’s breathing.

Thank God.

His pulse is weak, though. It’s very, very weak. [dramatic music] Bobby. Bobby. Oh, what– what happened? What did you do?

[quietly] I–

Oh, what– what– Oh, my God. Bobby, how many of these did you take?

I– I didn’t take any. I didn’t take any.

Bobby, come on. I need you to think. Think. If you took any of this, this could explain what’s happening right now. Bobby, please. Bobby!

[quietly] I– I’m not Bobby. I’m Everett.

Well, Connie, darling, at long last, you have washed your hands of the Bobby problem. Now you can focus on making Gabi and Stefan pay for what they did to Li, and, oh, will they ever pay. And lucky me, the perfect ammunition just fell right into my lap. Wait until Gabi hears her husband slept with Ava Vitali.

Thank you. I really appreciate everything you’re doing for my brother.

No change?

No. Not that I expected there to be. [both sigh] You know, Stefan, I know it’s crazy, but a part of me just wants to go into Rafe’s room and– and scream wake up at the top of my lungs.

It’s not crazy. I mean, if I thought it would bring him back to us, I would be there, screaming as loud as I possibly could, just so he would wake up and arrest me for disturbing the peace.

If only. [somber music]

And, hey, I’m so sorry. I know it’s our anniversary, and you had this special day planned, and I should be focused on us.

No apologies, OK? I mean, my God, your brother is in a coma. You should be allowed to focus on him.

Yeah. Thanks.

Yeah.

You know, I’ve been sitting there with him, and he seemed so peaceful. His breathing and the sound of the machines. I just wonder if he knows that we’re there.

I think he does. I just want him to know that I love him, and that I miss him, and how important he is to me.

I believe he knows all of those things. And if that isn’t motivation enough for him to come back to us, something tells me that a small part of him really wants to take a crack at the son of a bitch who did this to him.

Oh, definitely.

Never mess with a Hernandez, right?

Mm. You better believe it. And I know Jada is on the case, and she’s the best, but she’s got her hands full with running the department. And– and she’s probably working on Abigail’s case too.

I know you thought it was a Hail Mary, but it worked, Chad. It worked.

They were able to enhance the video?

By %.

Is it her?

I don’t know. Took all my power, but, son, I wanted to wait for you. [dramatic music]

Please, God. Let it be her. [soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

OK. Here it comes. [suspenseful music]

I know you told me not to apologize, but still, I feel so guilty that I’ve gotten us off track. I’m the reason why we’re here today.

Gabi, hey, no guilt, OK? [tender music] I have an idea.

All right. We’re gonna make a toast… to Rafe.

May he make a very swift, very complete recovery. [glasses clink]

Hear, hear.

And to Abigail being found alive.

Please, God. And to us.

You know, we’re already out of champagne.

Oh. Well, good thing because according to my rough schedule, we’re about at the part where I make us mojitos.

Oh. A nice ice cold mojito made to order by the man of my dreams. That’s the kind of thing that melts away every woman’s very last inhibitions.

Yeah? Well, a good restaurateur knows when to, uh, roll his sleeves up…

[laughs]

And pitch in. What?

Restaurateur?

Well, yeah? That is my job.

Which you only really have because Clyde needed a front.

[sighs]

But I know all that drug-dealing was just to protect me.

Small price to pay. [dramatic acoustic music]

Mm. Not that small, considering that you had to pretend to be a thing with Ava as a cover. So whose idea was that, anyway?

Oh, Ms. Vitali, I thought you were going to a finance meeting?

Ah, yeah, well, Kristen said it could be an email, so here I am. [dramatic acoustic music] You’re back in the office. Who were you talking to.

Talking?

Yeah, I heard you say my name.

Your name?

Mm.

Oh, true, I did. You see, I’m new here, and that’s how I go about memorizing everyone’s names.

By saying them out loud?

It actually helps. If you make a anagram of a name, it’s easier to remember. You should try it. It’s fun.

Sounds like a blast. What’s my anagram?

La Via Vita. [chuckles] Kind of interesting, huh? The way of life. Almost sounds like a perfume. And you smell so nice. So whenever I see you, I’ll make the connection, and I’ll remember your name.

You’re new here, too, right?

Yeah. Yeah, I am.

And what job did you have before this?

[exhales sharply]

Oh, wait. Didn’t you use to work with Gabi’s husband?

[sobs] Everett?

I’m gonna call an ambulance. They can pump his stomach.

[sighs] Steph. [dramatic music]

Steph.

Is it really you?

What happened? Where am I?

You’re in your room. Salem Inn. We’re calling for help. You might have accidentally overdosed.

I feel so dizzy.

What’s the last thing you remember?

I was– I was here. Bobby took over. I tried so hard to get back to you. I’m sorry I didn’t make it.

You did. You did. You’re here now. [sniffles] You’re here now. And I’m with you. You’re gonna be OK. Everett, OK? Just hang on.

[sobs] I feel really dizzy.

Just stay with me. OK? An ambulance is on the way.

I love you Steph. I love you. I never stopped.

[sobs]

[sobbing] [dramatic music]

I’m so sorry.

Sorry? But he was– I was just–

We got here too late.

Oh, God. Poor Everett. Because it was Everett. It wasn’t Bobby lying to us. It was Everett. He came back. I know it. Oh, what caused this? What’s in those pills?

He said he didn’t take any.

Do you think he– do you think he meant Bobby must have taken them?

It’s possible. You know, when I saw him at the station earlier, he told me that he suddenly wasn’t feeling well. And– and I don’t know, maybe he took some pills earlier, if he took any at all.

[sobbing]

But I don’t know what to think. We get here, he’s in distress. There’s no sign of forced entry.

Something made Everett emerge.

But he was– he was definitely Bobby at the station. He was. Well, you know, I guess we just got to start with the basics, OK?

[sobbing]

Oh, my God. [sirens wailing in distance] Maybe this can explain it.

What is it?

I think it’s a suicide note.

Yeah. I worked with Stefan for a while.

You two ran a restaurant together, right?

Oh, you’ve done your research on me, huh?

Nah. No research. I’m just a big old repository of random facts. You never know when they’ll come in handy. Do you happen to know when Gabi will be back?

Oh, she’s gone for the day.

Already? What if I need to run something by her?

Well, I probably wouldn’t because she’s taking a personal day. She’s celebrating her wedding anniversary at the bistro.

Where you used to work with Stefan. There I go with another random fact. But good for them. They seem like a great couple. [tense music] Well, I guess there’s no point in waiting around if Gabi’s not coming back.

Probably not.

Anyway, Ms. Vitali, I’m really looking forward to working together. You, me, Gabi, Melinda Trask–

You know what? DiMera’s a really large company, and if you’re gonna go through the entire roster, we’re gonna be here all night.

I just mean I love all the girl power in this office, don’t you? Women supporting other women? That’s what it’s all about. See you later.

So do that whole thing with all the toasts to get us back on track, and now, all you want to talk about is me and Ava fake dating.

[chuckles] Well, it sort of is about us, isn’t it? I mean, if you fake-dated Ava, then that means you fake-cheated on me while I was in prison for real.

Aren’t we supposed to be drinking mojitos right now?

Humor me. I spent a lot of time in prison with it living in my head after you dropped that bombshell.

OK, look. I only told you in the interest of full disclosure, but I never would have told you in that prison visiting room if I thought it was going to upset you.

Of course, you would have. We’re honest with each other about these things. I just want you to reassure your loving wife that it wasn’t your idea.

Oh, no, no, no, no. It was % Ava’s idea. I mean, I wasn’t even there when she pitched it to Harris to get him to steer clear.

And then you and Ava got down to it, dealing the drugs. Damn, Clyde.

Yeah. And I mean, Harris– Harris totally bought it. But then Chad came in and started questioning me and Ava about why we were working together, and he was convinced that we were in the drug trade. [dramatic music] Why don’t you save the questions for your star reporter, Chad? God knows he’s gonna be showing up everywhere like a bad penny anyway.

Well, he, uh, he doesn’t know how to read the both of you quite like I do, does he? But what he does know, as do I, is your well-documented history with the mafia, Ava, where I’m sure you learned the ins and outs of drug running right along with the ABCs.

[scoffs] And you– you know my brother. The guy was like a dog with a bone. So, yeah, Ava had to resurrect the lie in order to throw his scent off.

Well, some might say the same thing about the DiMeras.

Which is why, uh, the two of you in business together makes me just a tad bit suspicious, especially now that I’ve seen you all cozy together.

What can I say? Just can’t stay away from DiMera men. Well, let’s give it up. He’s onto us.

[sighs] So… I guess we needed to lean into it and sell it a little bit. And that’s when Ava…

She pulled me in and… Kissed me.

She kissed you.

Yes, but it was only to keep up our cover, get Chad to shut up. Please tell me you understand that.

I suppose. Let’s drop it.

[sighs] Good idea. I’m gonna get that mojito recipe.

Hmm. You keep recipes on your phone. So that was it? Just one kiss? You know what? No. I don’t want the details. Definitely not. Definitely not.

OK, good.

No, wait– hold on. I think we just need to put everything out in the open. You want to, as well. So that’s all that happened between you and Ava? Just one kiss?

No. It wasn’t.

I mean–

What? You don’t wanna watch it again?

What’s the point? We’ve watched it forwards and backwards, and– and she never turns and faces the camera.

That doesn’t mean it’s a dead end. The woman in the video, whether it’s Abigail or not, is not the only clue. We’re looking at the whole room. Maybe it’s gonna tell us where the video was taken. [dramatic music]

Cue it up from the beginning right– right before she, uh– she enters the frame.

OK, let’s do an inventory of the room. Here we go. Uh, the walls look bare. Uh-huh. And the window doesn’t look open.

Wait. What’s that? [sirens wailing]

No. Everett wouldn’t do this. He had hopes and dreams. He wanted to live.

It might have been a different story with Bobby.

Bobby? But–

This– “Dear Jada, I should have known “you’d figure it all out. “I’ll confess anyway. “You might as well have it all tied up in a bow. “I faked being Everett to get out of Bayview. “I faked being integrated to get close to you. And, yes, I stabbed Rafe to get him out of our way.”

But you said, that– he told you he didn’t stab Rafe when you saw him before.

He did. “Listen, I guess I was going down for Rafe eventually, “but that’s not why I’m doing this. “This is because you are never going to take me back. “No matter what I did, no matter how clever I was “about it, I lost you forever, and that means I don’t have anything left to live for.” “Look in the bottom of the dresser. “I put the gloves I wore when I attacked “the commissioner in there. “Rafe’s blood is on them. “More proof for you. Maybe they’ll give you a promotion.”

[exhales deeply]

[knocking on door]

Ava?

Mm, Melinda Trask. [chuckles] Private sector’s newest convert. Still dressing like you work for the government, though.

Have I done something to offend you?

Today? Nah. When you were a DA–

OK, all right. I get that, but we’re pulling on the same side of the rope now, though, right?

Eight hours a day.

All right, look, I get that you have issues with me, as I do with you, but I will– I will never forget what your son did to help my daughter, Haley. Marrying her so that she can get her green card? It was noble, so I’m grateful to him. And I think that if my Haley were still here, she would want you to know that, too.

I am, uh– I am very sorry for your loss.

Thank you. She was a wonderful young woman, and it was incredibly painful when she so tragically died at Kristen’s hands. But if I can set aside that wrenching pain for the hours a day that I have to be around Kristen DiMera, the woman who took the light of my life away, then maybe there’s hope for you and I.

Maybe there is. Is there something I can do for you?

Uh, yeah. I was just reviewing the newest employee contracts. Gabi hired a woman to work directly for her. I don’t know if you’ve met.

Yeah. Connie Viniski, we have met.

Oh, after I pulled the file, I encountered something a little strange. [soft dramatic music]

So there was one kiss and then an escalation?

No. No. There was– I mean, there was a second kiss. We kissed another time.

For practice?

[chuckles] Gabs, do you think this is fun for me?

Sorry. Go on.

So Harris came back. He was sniffing around, asking a lot of questions.

And Ava already said that you two were a thing.

Exactly. But we needed to, you know, send the point home, cover for all the time that we were spending together, so I kissed her. [dramatic music]

[exhales sharply] You kissed Ava?

Yes, but it was only to keep up our cover.

So for show?

Yes, just like I told you.

Yeah, I know. I know. I, uh, don’t wanna overreact. It’s just me in prison. You out here macking on Ava.

I really wish you wouldn’t put it like that.

Oh. Oh I suppose you didn’t have a choice.

No, I didn’t. Everything conspired to put me in that situation.

So that’s it?

That is it. Two kisses, OK? One for Chad’s benefit. One for Harris’s. That’s it.

Yoo-hoo. Sorry to interrupt.

Show me where you’re looking.

Right here through the window. It’s hard to see through the bars, but across the road.

Er, it’s part– it’s part of a– of a billboard. Uh, a distant–

Yeah, it’s a– an image, but it’s cropped. Is it a logo?

Uh, skates? Ice skates, maybe?

Maybe rollerblade. Could it be an advertisement for a skating rink? What are these numbers here? What is that. — — just wait. ?

An address, maybe. Area code.

Sorry, we are closed. Private event.

Oh, no, Stefan, this is Connie Viniski. You met her at EJ’s press conference.

Right.

It’s nice to see you again, Mr. DiMera, especially now that I’ve gotten to know your wife.

I hired her at Gabi Chic. She’s my new assistant.

Oh, great. [soft dramatic music] Connie? [whistles]

Connie.

Sorry. This place is so nice. I wish I would have come here with my old boyfriend. That would have been special.

Uh, is there a reason that you’re here right now?

Yes. Although a little birdie told me you two were celebrating your anniversary, so maybe it’s not the best time?

Oh, that’s OK. Just tell me why you’re here.

Actually, it’s about Ava Vitali. [dramatic music]

Yeah, I met Connie a few times, actually, and I didn’t connect the name until I was looking at the file.

And you saw something strange? OK, well, first, um, wait. Where did you meet her.

At small bar about a year ago. She was there on a blind date with Li Shin.

[chuckles] I’m– I’m sorry. Connie and Li? OK, that is a strange match.

Yeah, for sure. But I was there, too, obviously. I was also on a blind date with Alex Kiriakis.

Oh. OK. And?

Well, I– I recognized the address that was on one of Connie’s forms, and I saw that she’s now living in Li’s old apartment. I mean, how weird is that? [ominous music] [indistinct radio chatter]

My God. None of this feels real.

How I wish it weren’t.

I’m gonna take these down to forensics. There’s obviously some dried blood on them. Let me see if anything matches Rafe’s blood.

I’m sure you want that, too. Wait, we didn’t finish reading the note.

“The only thing left to say is I’m sorry “to you, to Rafe, “to Stephanie, “and especially to Everett. “He didn’t deserve any of this. “Maybe we can both be at peace now. Sincerely, Bobby.” [somber music]

[sobs]

Well, it looks like I’ve taken all the evidence that I need. Wait. What– [tense music] Oh, my God. He dialed .

What?

He called emergency, but he didn’t hit send.

It never went through?

Uh– this doesn’t make any sense. Why would he– why would Bobby wanna kill himself but try to call for help? [dramatic music]

Well, maybe Connie didn’t know that Li lived there. Look, Wendy’s name was on the apartment. I don’t think Li’s name was even on that lease.

OK, but still, er–

But still what?

I ran into Connie another time. It was Valentine’s day, and she sort of blew up at me and started blaming me for Li’s death.

Based on what?

No idea. And then I saw her a third time. She sought me out to apologize. Said she realized that Li’s death wasn’t actually my fault. I mean, she seemed sincere.

Oh man, oh man. This is a lot of fallout from one blind date.

Tell me about it.

Yeah. Well, I guess we’ve deduced that Connie is, um, eccentric?

Yeah. [laughs]

To put it mildly. Whew, you know. And regarding Li, maybe, you know, they had that date. She was smitten, and then maybe she just– she couldn’t stop thinking about what life might have been. I don’t know.

After one blind date?

I’m just trying to theorize here. I don’t know. You know, maybe, um, she’s lonely. She’s lonely, and maybe she did know that Li lived there. Right? And so living there herself brings her some kind of creepy comfort.

OK. That is very creepy.

I’m just saying.

And I don’t know. Between, like, my strange interactions with her and her living in that apartment?

What? No, come on. It’s not like she killed the guy.

[chuckles] Yeah. OK.

So Ava sent you?

Oh, no, not exactly. It was my idea once I heard you were both here. She needs these documents signed, and she was going to messenger them over.

But you decided to come here instead?

I like to do things in person.

Oh.

I assume you know Ava?

Oh, he knows Ava real well.

We used to be, uh, partners in this place.

Oh, right. I heard about that. Gabi wasn’t kidding.

Well… OK. All done.

Great. Thank you. Now don’t give business another thought. You two were separated for a long time, and you deserve to spend your anniversary in peace. [soft dramatic music]

She’s certainly interesting.

She’s a little off-kilter. But you saw for yourself, she makes up for it with her enthusiasm, and she’s a decent assistant. I mean, she’s already made my life that much easier, even if I can do without interruptions like that one.

Well, I’m sure she just wants to impress you. I guess off-kilter is OK if it means you have somebody you can depend on.

Well?

OK. It is an area code for Missouri. Covers Jefferson City, Columbia, Hannibal, and Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff?

Gateway to the Ozarks. Built on the banks of the mighty Black River and home of none other than Clyde Weston. [dramatic music]

OK, so if the billboard outside the window has an area code for Poplar Bluff–

Clyde could be holding Abigail in his old hometown. How long has it been since he’s lived there. Any idea?

I don’t know. I’m sure quite a while. But I bet he still has contacts there.

And maybe even our Abigail.

Well, one way to find out.

Let’s go. [soft dramatic music]

Mm. I can feel those inhibitions just melting away as we speak.

Mm, exactly. And I, for one, am very glad that our anniversary is back on track.

You don’t fool me. I see you got your eye on your schedule just counting the hours before you take me to bed.

I admit to that unashamedly.

And I’ll make you a promise before we get there.

Does it have something to do with those aforementioned inhibitions?

I’m going to make it my mission to make sure that you forget about those kisses with Ava.

Good. So does this mean we’re OK?

Yes. I overreacted before. And I’m sorry about what I said to Connie about how well you know Ava.

It’s fine.

I just hate the idea of someone else messing around with my husband. But since it was just two kisses, I suppose that I can let it go. [romantic music]

[laughs] No. Maybe you do have a point. Connie didn’t kill Li. Gil Carter did.

And I killed Gil.

Completely justifiable, by the way.

Yeah. Two people killed in the same apartment. You know, that’ll definitely drive down the rents.

Mm. I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe that’s why Connie took the place.

I suppose it would have been fun to blow Gabi and Stefan out of the water right then and there, but maybe it’s better if I hold on to this info for now. That way I can be sure and find the perfect time to drop the ball. [eerie music]

Bye-bye, Bobby. [chuckles]

Could it be that Bobby changed his mind after taking the pills?

Or maybe he was Everett by that point. [somber music] Maybe he realized that he was in distress, realized what Bobby had done and tried calling for help.

Maybe.

But then he was too weak to press send. Oh, God, that is so heartbreaking. [sobbing] Poor Everett.

Poor Bobby.

[sobbing]
