THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

You’re saying you want me to move out?

You need to be with your kids, our kids. They miss you.

Yeah, but–

Look, we agreed, right? It doesn’t make any sense to have their amnesiac mother thrust back into their life. But it’s not fair if they have to see you split your focus between them and me.

OK. Yeah, I see your point. All right. Well, if I leave, what are you going to do?

I–

[sighs] If your family doesn’t have a problem with it, I’ll just stay here.

No. No, no, no, no. I don’t like that idea. Mm-mm.

[upbeat electronic music]

– * Love is a stranger *

* Love is a stranger *

[knocking on door]

[music stops]

Jada, h.

Hi.

Come in.

Sorry to just drop by like this.

No! No, it’s fine. Have you eaten? Do you want a glass of wine?

Oh, thanks, but I can’t stay long. I just wanted to drop this off.

[soft somber music] It’s Everett’s ashes.

[panting] Come on. Come on. Break! I gotta get away from that lunatic before I become a lunatic and keep talking to a dead person. Man, if you were only alive, so you could actually do something useful. But, no, you had to go and get stabbed. I had no idea you had such strong feelings for Li.

Why else would I move into this place? I wanted to feel close to him. Here, have some more tea.

[mysterious music]

Thank you.

It really is a great space, huh? And an even better base of operations.

Operations for what?

For getting revenge, of course.

Revenge?

Yes, for Li’s death. It was Gabi’s fault that Li was killed. And yours.

What? Mine? I–

You know, I didn’t know if this would work, but you actually bought my little apology.

The only person that is to blame for Li’s death is Gil Carter, the man who stabbed him.

Gil Carter didn’t stab Li, silly.

What? And what do you– Oh, my god. I was so strung out on that poisoned tea, I completely forgot that Connie said that. What the hell did she mean?

[heavy breathing]

I’m glad Gabi made Kristen fire you. You don’t deserve to work at DiMera.

Oh, that is some loyalty coming from someone they just let go.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m gainfully employed.

Uh, no, last time I saw Melinda, she was on her way over to your apartment to give you the axe.

What? Why would she want to fire me?

Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because she found out your whole resume was a lie.

Well, that’s ridiculous. Besides, Melinda never came to see me. I don’t know what you’re talking about. And if you continue to spread libelous claims about me–

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you’ll sue me. I know. I know. Melinda told me all about your litigious history.

That’s not what I was going to say.

But you obviously have an affinity for Ava that neither Gabi nor I share, nor understand, for that matter.

I don’t owe you an explanation, EJ. That’s for sure.

No, you don’t. But know this. Any enemy of Ava is a friend of mine, which means that Gabi is my new BFF.

[suspenseful music]

[gulps, exhales]

– After what he did to you? An eye for an eye, am I right? In fact, since he cheated on you with Ava, you should sleep with someone else, too.

[suspenseful music]

– So? Spit it out, Connie. What were you gonna say?

Don’t go around gossiping about me, and it won’t matter.

Don’t worry. I don’t care about you or Gabi enough to even bother talking about either of you.

[phone beeps]

My boss needs me to take care of something. Toodles.

“Toodles”?

[dramatic music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

It’s not that I don’t want you here. That’s–

[stammers] My family is nuts. When I walked in, there was duct tape across the living room. Did you see that?

Yes. Apparently, Gabi and Stefan are having some kind of marital disagreement.

Yeah, right. And my family handles disagreements in very weird ways. They’re dangerous, OK? And I don’t want to leave you alone with them, so–

Is that the reason you’re worried?

Why else would I be worried?

Because I slept with both Stefan and EJ. Are you afraid that’s gonna happen again?

Any enemy of Ava’s is a friend of yours? Really, EJ? Even Gabi?

Yes, Stefan, even Gabi.

Cut the crap. You hate Gabi with the heat of a thousand burning suns.

Ah, but he hates Ava even more. And congratulations, EJ, on coming down to the right side of history. And as we all know, history is written by the winners.

What exactly are you planning on winning?

Everything, except you, of course. Oh, and you might want to steer clear of Abigail, since now she knows all about you.

Knows all about what, exactly?

Just that you took advantage of her in a compromised mental state. I filled her in on all the details.

Gabi, you know damn well Chad did not want her to know.

To what? To be traumatized by the truth? Well, I think she has a right to know that she’s living under the same roof as a man who violated her. Although, she won’t be for long once my lawyer kicks you to the curb.

Gabi, please listen.

Stay behind your line.

This is insane!

[phone ringing]

[phone beeps] Stefan DiMera. What? I’ll be right there.

[phone beeps] Fire alarm went off at the Bistro. I need to go.

[tense music]

[fire alarm blaring]

[exhales deeply] Everett’s ashes.

Yeah, I was on my way to visit Rafe and the funeral home called me to pick it up. I hate to put this on you.

No, no, no. No, no. It’s fine, it’s fine. You and Everett were divorced. It’s not like it should be your responsibility, especially after what he did to Rafe. Don’t worry. I will take care of it.

Thank you.

How are you doing? It seems like you’ve been so busy at work and then trying to find time to visit Rafe.

Yeah, it’s– it’s been a week. I don’t know, I thought that after this break in the Sarah Kiriakis case, that I would feel better.

Do you know who did it?

Brady Black turned himself in.

What? Brady Black?

Mm-hmm. Yeah, he’s booked and processed, except, the only thing is, he doesn’t remember anything from that night. I don’t know. I have a feeling that there’s something that I’m missing.

Connie said that Gil Carter didn’t stab you. But if he didn’t, who the hell did?

Here comes the airplane.

No, get that drug-laced slop away from me!

I slaved away making this slop for you. Fine, starve. See if I care. The only reason I kept you alive was because Li asked me to. I’m trying. You see that, right?

Li’s dead, you psycho!

And whose fault is that? Yours, and Gabi’s, and Stefan’s. If it weren’t for the three of you, I never would have had to–

You never would have what?

Oh, my god. Did she kill you? She did, didn’t she? I gotta get out of here before she does the same thing to me.

[intense music]

I know you said you’d call me if there was any change, but I just wanted to check. OK. I’ll be by to see him in the morning.

[inhales, sighs] Any news on Rafe?

No, nothing.

Oh, well, I wish I could say I’m sorry, but–

Wow. That was a low, even for you. You don’t have to be a total jerk about my comatose brother just to prove that we don’t see eye to eye on anything, except Ava fricking Vitali.

Oh, you think that’s my only gripe with you? Has it slipped your simple little mind that you destroyed my marriage, my life?

Because you kept little Jude Brady from his real dad? And because you sent me to prison for a crime I didn’t commit. Talk about destroying lives.

And the only reason that I became DA and that I was in a position to send you to prison was because you unseated me as CEO of DiMera.

And that was because back then, Stefan had me convinced we would run this town.

[cackles]

Hell, run the whole world. And God help anyone who got in our way. We all know how that turned out. – No, no, no. It’s a false alarm, right? OK, so you don’t need to come. Thank you. Hey.

Hey, Stefan. You OK? You seem a little upset.

Smoke alarm went off at the Bistro. Now the fire department says that somebody pulled it on purpose. Now, this isn’t a middle school where kids are trying to weasel out of an algebra test. So tell me, who would want to spoil dinner, let alone my evening?

Oh, I can think of one person who would like to spoil your evening and every evening for the rest of your life.

No, no, no. Uh-uh. I was with Gabi when I got the call.

OK, so maybe it was her assistant, Connie.

[breathing heavily]

[door opens]

What are you doing?

I’m just… trying to scratch an itch.

Huh. Seems like everyone has a itch that needs scratching today.

What do you mean?

Well, let’s just say, I gave Gabi some sage itch-scratching advice. And when she takes it, it’ll be the final nail in the coffin of her marriage.

I see. And that’ll make you happy?

Very.

And that’s because you hate Gabi and Stefan both. You blame them for Li’s murder.

Well, why wouldn’t I blame them? It was their fault and yours.

You know that I didn’t stab Li, right? And neither did Gabi, and neither did Stefan.

Well, not technically, but still.

[sighs] Yeah, I just remembered. You told me that Gil Carter didn’t do it either.

Yeah, so?

Well, I’m just– I’m just wondering. I mean, how would you know that? Unless you’re the one who did it. Unless you’re the one who murdered Li.

[tense music]

No, I don’t think anything’s gonna happen between you and EJ, or you and Stefan.

Even after their relationships just imploded.

No, that’s not it. I don’t want you in a house full of strangers who I don’t think have your best interests at heart. That’s why.

Chad, everyone’s a stranger to me right now. And we are not going to be apart forever. It’s just until my memories come back. OK? It’s not gonna be that long. But the last thing that I want to do is jerk those children around after everything that they’ve been through.

Yeah, I know. I don’t–I don’t–I don’t– I don’t want to put them through any of that either, especially after what I already put them through.

After what you put them through?

Yeah.

What?

I was gonna try to– I was gonna wait to say something, but I guess I don’t know when– there’s never really a right time but… um… when I believed that you were dead, um, I, uh– I made the mistake of thinking that I was ready to move on. And I, uh, I moved in with a woman, and the kids got attached to her. And then we broke up, and the kids were heartbroken. And I don’t want to put them through anything like that again, so.

[softly] Oh. I’m…sorry, Chad.

No, I’m sorry. Again, I– not how I wanted you to find out, but, uh– and it was with– it was your cousin, Stephanie.

Are you saying that you don’t think Brady’s guilty?

I don’t know. I mean, the evidence against him is strong. I don’t know. Something’s just not sitting right with me. You know, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I should not be talking to you about this. I’m just–I’m so used to, you know, going home and hashing things out with Rafe. But now I am alone in his home, trying to do his job.

And you’re doing it so well.

[sighs] I just don’t want to disappoint him and let him down.

[soft music] I just keep thinking that if Everett hadn’t wanted me, none of this would have happened to Rafe.

Jada, it is not your fault. You know that.

I guess. Did you know that the longer that he doesn’t wake up, the longer– well, the smaller his chances are that he’d ever recover?

Is that what the doctors say?

Yeah. I asked your mom to give it to me straight up. And now I kind of wish I hadn’t.

I’m so sorry. We have all been praying for him, Jada.

I know. Thank you. Your support means everything to me.

Are you getting enough sleep? Are you able to find time to take care of yourself at all?

I can’t. We’re very short-staffed at the station. And Paulina’s been great. You know, she told me that she would give me some more help and reinforcements. But I just–

You just– you need a shoulder to cry on. You’ve got mine.

Thank you, Stephanie. And again, I am sorry to leave you with this.

God, no, no. It’s fine. It’s fine. Just go be with Rafe. I will handle it. And you know what? If you have time to grab a bite or you just want to talk…

Thank you. Hello, Leo. Goodbye, Leo.

Was it something I said?

She was just on her way out.

Oh.

What are you doing here?

Oh, I guess we’re dispensing with the niceties and cutting straight to the chase. OK. I understand you are doing PR for “Body and Soul.” So I took it upon myself to write up my bio for the press release. Thought I’d save you the trouble.

Hmm. “A Rhodes scholar”?

I briefly attended Rhodes College after– whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. Technically, that’s true.

[scoffs] “Multi-award winning journalist”?

I am a journalist who has won many awards in his life, starting with perfect attendance in third grade.

OK, Leo, nothing against Lady Whistleblower. We all love her–you– but the show’s fans, they don’t care about any of this. They just want to be entertained.

Maybe. Will you at least leave in the part where I talk about how I saved the world from doom and destruction?

[sighs]

Is that what I think it is?

It’s an urn. Everett’s ashes.

Eesh. My former boss is in that container.

[soft emotional music] What are you gonna do with him?

So you moved on with my cousin?

Yeah, but not–not–not– not right away. I mean, it was months before I even thought that I’d be ready to date again.

No, no, no, Chad. Chad, please. You do not owe me any explanations. You thought I was dead. I have no reason to be upset, especially not knowing that I had slept with both of your brothers, even if one of them wasn’t exactly consensual. I know, with Stefan, that I had a mental health concern or something.

Who told you that? Was it EJ?

[sighs]

Was it Stefan? They knew that I wanted to be the one to say that to you, because I didn’t want you to feel overwhelmed. I’m–I’m–I’m sorry, they–

Chad, no, no, no, no. Listen. Thank you. It wasn’t your brothers. It was not your brothers. It was Gabi. – Silly me. I thought Stefan and I had this great love, one for the ages. A love so great that he sacrificed his freedom and future to try to protect me while I was in prison. Little did I know, he couldn’t even bother to stay faithful to me for a few months before he jumped into Ava Vitali’s bed.

Ava has a habit of ensnaring people who should know better. Even managed to seduce my son.

But Johnny is a kid. Stefan should have known better. Wait. Surely you’re not defending your brother.

Certainly not. Stefan was a fool.

To cheat on me? Oh, that is the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me.

I meant he was a fool to be with you in the first place.

You know what, EJ? I get that you resent me for blowing up your marriage, but deep down, I think you know I did you a favor.

[tense music]

A favor?

Oh, come on. You were deluded if you thought you and Nicole were ever going to last. She’s loved Eric forever. Your marriage was over from the beginning. I just hastened things along.

Her assistant, Connie? OK, why– why would Gabi’s assistant pull the fire alarm?

Well, I just ran into Connie outside of the Brady Pub and she got a text from Gabi. It was some urgent errand she needed to run. She headed off in this direction, and here we are.

So what would Gabi have to accomplish? Although, she is being pretty petty. When I left the house, she was dividing it into his and her halves.

[laughs] Well, maybe she really wanted you out of the house so she didn’t have to look at you anymore.

OK, be that as it may, pulling a fire alarm is a crime, and if Connie did this–

OK, look, Connie is a total whack job, OK? I mean, not to mention that she is so loyal to Gabi, she felt it was her duty to tell her that you and I slept together. She has turned herself into a total Gabi stan. So much so that she even– you know? Mm-mm. Nope.

So much so that she even what?

She faked her entire resume so she could work with her, among other things.

Are you seriously asking if I killed Li Shin in cold blood? The love of my life? Did you hear this? Talk about gall!

Never mind. I–I didn’t mean it.

This woman must have a death wish!

[tense music]

What else did she tell you?

Uh, quite a lot, actually. Um… apparently, I had dissociative identity disorder. I named one of my alters after her. We were friends at one time. And then we were enemies. And then by the end, we were frenemies.

Yeah, OK. Look, uh– Gabi’s got a lot going on right now. I mean, honestly, Gabi always has a lot going on, so I think you should probably just stay away from her. You know? And it’s probably best just to stay out of her and Stefan’s rift right now. Actually, in fact, you should stay out of EJ and Stefan’s rift, too. You know what? Just stay away from my entire family. Because my sister, Kristen, she’s crazy. She requires an instruction manual.

OK. You know, I mean, I’ve always known that the uber-rich, like, live by their own set of rules, but wow.

Right. That’s what I’m saying. So that’s why I don’t want you to stay here.

OK. OK. Well, if I’m not gonna stay here and I’m not moving in with you, what is our alternative?

[soft music]

I have an idea, actually.

I guess I’ll have some type of service to lay Everett to rest. It’s funny; I always knew the type of wedding I’d have wanted, but I never thought I’d have to plan a service like this.

I’m sorry, Stephanie.

Thanks. It’s–it’s weird. I–I don’t even know who’d want to be there. I mean, you worked with him.

Yeah. But funerals aren’t really my thing.

They’re no one’s thing. But he didn’t know anyone in Salem.

[sighs] What about his friend Connie?

I’m sorry, Connie. I didn’t mean to upset you. I was just thinking about those true crime podcasts that we’ve been listening to. Aren’t your favorite episodes the ones where the people get away with it?

I do like those.

Yeah, so I–I was thinking, if you did kill Li and pinned it on someone else, multiple someone elses, that would be a considerable accomplishment, isn’t it, in its own special kind of way?

Thank you.

Yeah.

I am a very clever woman.

Mm-hmm.

Not that anyone’s ever properly appreciated it.

Oh, I do. I very much appreciate what you’re capable of.

Not fully. I mean, when you figured out that I drugged your tea, did it ever occur to you that that wasn’t the only time I’d gotten away with something like that?

Look, you didn’t hear any of this from me, OK?

OK.

All right. But Melinda told me the other day that she was headed on over to Connie’s apartment to fire her. She was gonna get the laptop and the badge back. But when I just ran into Connie at the Pub, she said that Melinda never showed up at her apartment, she had no idea she was about to be fired.

That’s odd.

Yeah, right? And I just saw Kristen. And she said that Melinda just quit DiMera.

Why?

I don’t know. Kristen didn’t know. She said it just came like it was out of the blue.

Uh, I don’t know, maybe… Melinda didn’t want the hassle of firing Connie, so she left?

Yeah, maybe. Look, it’s not like I care. But this all seems a little bit weird, don’t you think?

Yeah.

You and I are quite a bit alike, EJ. Smart, misunderstood.

Oh, I could throw out a few other less flattering adjectives.

Sure.

Mm.

Like, conniving, lying, ruthless, right? Truth is, speaking for myself, that is, that deep down, all I’ve ever wanted is to be loved. And I thought I was. But then Stefan screwed me over, and now all I want is revenge. And I’m sure you feel the same way about Nicole. She got back together with Eric, what, like two seconds after they found out that Jude was their son? After she told you over and over again that–

OK, that’s enough.

Believe me. I get why you don’t want to give her a divorce. She made you look like a fool. And now she and Eric have scampered off to Paris together. And there is nothing you can do about it but let them be a happy little family while you’re here, miserable and alone. God, you must be feeling so much pent-up frustration, all that pain and anger, and nobody to take it out on. But you also hate Stefan, and he’s still here.

As am I.

What are you suggesting?

I think you know.

[dramatic flourish]

Well, obviously, it’s not the best thing for you to be at the Horton house. So why don’t I put you up in a room at the Salem Inn?

[sighs] You’re so wonderful. Thank you. I just– to be honest, I–I was in my apartment alone for God knows how long. And I don’t want to live in a room by myself again. Surely your family will be on their best behavior, at least around me. And it won’t be for that long.

[soft tense music]

OK. If that’s–if that’s really what you want.

It is. Did I offend you? I’m sorry.

No, what are you doing? You don’t– you don’t owe me an apology. I’ll look out for you while you’re here. I’ll go pack and tell my family what’s going on.

OK. Thank you.

Call me if you need anything. If I don’t hear from you, I’ll try you in the morning.

OK.

[sighs, sniffles]

I didn’t know Everett had a friend named Connie. I never heard him mention it.

Well, neither did I, but I saw her coming out of his room after he got out of Bayview. And I asked who she was and she said that she and Everett went way back. I didn’t know it at the time but she said that her name was Connie Vininski. And she’s Gabi’s new assistant.

Huh. That’s interesting. Wonder how she knew Everett.

So I’m not the first person you’ve poisoned. Um… what happened to the other person? Look, you can tell me. It’ll be like our own little secret.

Everett Lynch, AKA Bobby Stein. He was in your position once upon a time. He knew what happened to Li. And that’s why he had to die.

I thought he died by suicide.

Well, that’s what I wanted people to believe. Suffice it to say, people that stand in my way need to be very careful. That includes you. Li here convinced me not to finish you off, but things can always change.

You know, I don’t know why I’m wasting any of my energy worrying about crazy Connie Vininski. You know what, or Gabi, for that matter, when what I really need to be worrying about is finding a job.

Yeah. Ava, look, I’m sorry. I know I’m the one who betrayed his wedding vows, but you’re the one who lost her job because of what we did. And please know, I would have you back at the Bistro in a heartbeat. Gabi would never forgive me.

[chuckles]

Not that I really expect her to do that, anyway.

Yeah, well, I get it. I do. You love her. You want her back.

I do. It may seem impossible now, but, um, I am not giving up.

[tense music]

You are not my type, Gabi.

[scoffs, chuckles] Oh, please. Didn’t we just figure out we’re basically the same person? And besides, who cares if I’m your type? You’re not mine, either. That’s not the point. This is about Nicole and Eric and Ava and Stefan, and getting out all those pesky, miserable feelings. You know what they say about that very fine line? Help me hurt him, EJ. Let’s use each other to stick it to them all.

[soft tense music]

[sighs]

You know, maybe I’ll reach out to this Connie person. Maybe she’ll want to be at the memorial and pay her respects.

OK, that sounds like a plan.

Everett is also the reason I had to stab the commissioner.

What? You’re the one who put Rafe Hernandez in a coma?

[dramatic music]

Rafe, I love you. Please come back to us.

[emotional music]

[phone beeps]

Hey, Melinda, it’s Ava. Call me back when you get this. I need to talk to you about Connie.

[dark music]

[phone beeps]

It’s your friend Ava. She might be a problem.

Gabi, can we talk, please?

[sighs] All right, look… you can pull all the smoke alarms you want, you can tape up the entire house, take me for all I’m worth, OK? But nothing that you do will make me stop loving you.

[dramatic music]

[soft dramatic music]
