[ Door opens ] And here he is. Anna devane. It’s been far, far too long. Oh, hey, hello. Hi. Well, I guess this means I have plenty of room for clothes. Well, that was a lovely memorial for rory yesterday. It really was. Thank you for being there. Oh, of course. I’ll do anything to support you. You know that. Yeah, I know I can count on you. Well, my question is… can you count on spencer? Ah, spencer. Glad I caught you. Uncle victor, I was just on my way to — please, join me, won’t you? Promise I won’t keep you long, and then you can go off and join your friends for the new year’s celebrations. Although it is a little early, isn’t it? I have some things to get done before britt’s birthday party tonight. I have to say, I’m a little surprised you’re attending that. She was a very good friend to me when I was a kid, so luckily, we’ve remained friends. Ah, good. Well, anyway, I just wanted to make sure that you’ll be available tomorrow afternoon. I thought I’d get the family together for a nice brunch — you know, usher in the new year. Forgive me, uncle, but under no circumstances will I be having brunch with my father. I have every intention of turning 2023 into a fresh start for myself, which means that once I move out of wyndemere, I will hopefully never speak to or lay eyes on my father again. [ Keys jingle ]

Well, I tell you, when you called me from a jail cell in ireland — oh! Oh, listen, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you riding to rescue, interceding on my behalf. Oh. Well, of course. That was very brave of you. Oh, no. Bravery had nothing to do with it, believe me. Nobody’s more surprised than I was. The last thing I expected when I flew over there was to fall on my sword so anna devane could get away.

[ Laughs ] Well, you know, I think you’re pretty lucky that the wsb let you get away with just a fine. Yeah. Something fishy about that. In any case, for all the good it’s done me — from one prison to another.

[ Sighs ] Well, at least you’re not behind bars in this one. Yeah. You know, you didn’t have to come. Oh, come on. After everything you just did for me, you think I was gonna let you face our wayward brother alone? What do you think he wants — sister! And is this my brother I see before me? I’m sure that she turned to him for comfort and support, and he went ahead and he used her trust to get her into bed. Oh, you don’t know what happened between them. It’s disgusting! And I hope that cameron’s mother comes to her senses and kicks him out of her life for good. You have to be realistic, spencer. There’s no way elizabeth can cut ties with nikolas now. Why not? Which plan? I have so many. Demetrius informed me that you barely touched your lunch, and you still haven’T. Worried about me? The baby needs nourishment. I just wasn’t hungry, okay? I’ve decidedto go on a little vacation. Where are you going? When are you leaving? Why don’t I have your itinerary? A whole bunch of places I will send you postcards from as soon as I get there. And to answer your remaining question, I am flying out tonight, right after the party. Why is this the first I’ve heard of this vacation? It was a spur of the moment idea. I got a good deal. So you think that somehow victor’s trying to frame laura with all of this? Victor has a lot of sway here in pentonville. It’s obvious from the way he was able to meet with spencer in the prison library. We also know that victor never gets his own hands dirty. One of his agents did the actual work to get spencer’s release. So… and this agent also works for you. I’m sorry to tell you, dear sister, that you have a mole in the mayor’s office. You mean along with the snake? I feel it’s my duty, as your brother, to warn you that your deputy mayor, eileen ashby, is working for victor. The research I was doing was for the wsb. I only later discovered it was corrupted by the cassadines. Specifically victor and helena. Yes, as well as your old nemesis, liesl obrecht. I’m more interested in your interactions with the cassadines. In particular, obviously, victor. I had to give the occasional progress report on our various dealings. I know the police are doing everything they can to find his killer, whether it’s esme or somebody else. All I have to do is lure esme out of hiding, and it’ll work because I’ll be prepared this time. No, you’re not putting a bullseye on yourself! She is not going to have the element of surprise. Tell me that you think that this is a good idea. It has potential. Thank you. Because you don’t trust me. And while that saddens me, I do understand. But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. You best get comfortable. You’re gonna be waiting a long time.

[ Sighs ] I promise you, laura, this is not a threat. It’s a warning. Okay. But why would you warn me? I reached out to you because we are family. Victor cassadine interfered with my family, and I have no intention of turning the other cheek.

What can you tell us about security? Any specific defenses other than armed guards? We entered the building via a secured elevator underground. [ Sighs ] Mr. Cassadine would not like it. Probably not. But it is your duty to guard me. And what better way to ensure that I’m eating than to be in the same room as we enjoy a candlelit dinner?

[ Chuckles ] And yes, there have been nicer, warmer, and fuzzier mothers.

[ Chuckles ] But there’s no one like you. And I mean that in the best way. There is no one more fierce, more protective, more loyal, more brilliant and hilarious and extraordinary. And to be here with you — to celebrate and mourn with you, to forgive and be forgiven by you, to evolve with you… I mean, it’s no surprise why you’ve always been so protective of your heart, because there is no one I have ever met that — that feels as deeply and as passionately as you do. It is an honor and an adventure…

[ Laughs ] …To be your daughter. It’s a thrill ride. And I am so glad you are my mom. And I’m so proud to be blessed with such a strong, acerbically witty, beautiful, brilliant daughter. Not only a doctor, just like her mutter, but chief of staff, also just like her mutter.

Besides, the whole reason that we’re doing this is to get people to talk. Wherever esme is hiding out, she’ll be furious if she thinks that we’re together. Unless, of course, you’ve changed her mind. Then I can go back to my original plan of trying to lure esme out of hiding by myself. No. We said we’re going to do this together. “We?” Actually, you said that. I just knew better than to argue with you. I’m glad you’re finally learning. Just as long as you know that I can handle it. You don’t have to help me. Yes, I do. Even if that means pretending to enjoy your company. And when esme does come after us, we’ll be ready.

So our best bet is to take their photographs and compare it with the one that we have of josiah. And see if any match. Yeah, I mean, that’s our best bet of finding this guy and seeing what he knows about willow’s birth. Mommy, are we going sledding? Not today, sweetie. But you promised. Because I don’T. Okay, so what we’re talking about here is a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool that’s been recently federally approved. And its ability to locate cancer cells and other potentially life-threatening illnesses is so cool. I-it’s remarkable. Sounds great, but I’m gonna beat britt to the punch and ask how much. Here at the hospital when you have a breech baby, we usually opt for a c-section. At the quartermaines’, I had to deliver the baby breech. Do you have any idea all the things that could have gone wrong? After I delivered that little girl and I put her in her mother’s arms, it was the first time ever I realized life is a miracle and it should never be taken for granted. What? Suddenly you’re agreeable. Then you start talking about miracles. Were you visited by three ghosts last night, showing you how your life might turn out? Okay, chosen family, if you know britt so well, tell me why this party is so important to her. I’m not sure. There are some things even drinking buddies don’t share. But britt did mention to me that she wanted to be remembered as more than the woman who wound up getting knocked into the metro court pool when cody parachuted into town. Remembered? Because honestly, all love is tough, and a lot of people fail at it. The trick is to get back on that horse. Am I right? Easy, mac. I respect the thin blue line. But if you want to find his killer… I’m your best hope. And I think you know that. What makes you think spencer and I are up to something? So I can take esme’s place in ryan’s world, become his nanny, his buddy. Whatever he needs. I’ll work him hard and fast, and I promise you I’ll get him to squeal for me. And when he does, I pass the information on to you. You can track down esme prince and end this nightmare. So, boys, we have a deal or don’t we? Wish I’d been a better friend to britt. I was less than up-front with her from the start. About what? Not to get into the gory details, but I-I knew she might be in possession of something that rightly belonged to me.

[ Inhales deeply ] I had my eye on the prize, so to speak. And you used her to get to that prize? You put it that way, I sound like a real horse’s ass. No, you sound like that kid with a chip on his shoulder that I knew back at camp.

[ Sighs ]

[ Baby crying ] Our lives sure have gone in different directions, though, huh? I mean, you’re a police detective in a healthy relationship with sam, a bunch of kids between you. I’m still chasing after shiny objects instead of what really matters. Like a little baby britta noelle. Y-you know, for a minute there on christmas day, britt and I put our egos and agendas aside, focused on something that was higher and better than both of us. And to be honest, we made a damn good team, too. Well, hey, I mean, you did it once. What’s to say you can’t do it again? Maybe you and britt have a chance. You might even go into 2023 on a high note. I get it. The two of you may never become friends. But one day, you’ll look back on my party and I hope you’ll remember how much it meant to me that you were both there. That the two of you helped me make it happen. And if you can work together to create one magical night, then maybe you can look out for each other when I’m not around. Why? Where are you going? Yeah, you going somewhere?

[ Chuckles ] I would thank you, except I think he might be responsible for us never seeing our son again.

What’s going on? Um, I don’t know if you heard. But, uh… harborview is totally blocked off because of the storm? Yeah. Uh, no one’s getting out your main gate unless they’re planning on walking. Well, I mean, luckily, everyone here is planning on staying here, at least for the foreseeable future, so. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. Thank you. Cody. Wh– what are your plans for the day? Well, I was gonna hit up beradino’s for their holiday menu, but [Chuckles] That’s obviously shot. Um, no big deal. You know, I’ll scrounge something out of the fridge. You will do no such thing. I won’t? No. You’re staying right here. We’ll figure out something with the food. When things get really, really bad, we try to make sense of them, and we’re willing to accept answers from anywhere, even if that means believing the worst about ourselves. And you think that’s what I’m doing? It is what you’re doing.

[ Sobs ] And blaming yourself… it’s only gonna hold you back. And rory would not want that for you. Rory would want you to keep moving forward. Come here. Look, I appreciate you owning what you did. That proves to me that you can still be a good man… which is why I was drawn to you in the first place. Well, uh… helping a woman deliver a baby in the woods when she’s being chased by a crazy nurse… make anyone look like a hero. But, see [Sighs] That’s where the root of our problem is. When I met you, I was trying to save my own life, trying to save my daughter’s life, and trying to survive the most traumatic relationship I had ever been in. And there you were, like a guardian angel. We went through something huge together, and we became really important to each other really fast. So fast that I think lines were blurred. Trauma bonding is a real thing. And…

[ Sighs ] You know, fate brought us together, but… but we’re not meant to be. Um… we — we need to tell willow that there’s still a chance that her birth parents are out there. She clearly needs some hope. Well, it’s not particularly hopeful to hear that you’ve been taken from your family. I mean, when you’re pregnant, your hormones just compound everything. And that’s what’s going on with willow. Hey, there’s nothing to worry about. Broo k lynn: I got so caught upin what I wanted, I convinced myself it’s what chase wanted, too. Now chase is gone, and I… I have to live with that. What are you gonna do about the show tonight? You’ll be in breach of contract if you don’t show up with an act. But the last to ask when he needs it. You know, one time he broke his arm in camp. He ended up being the one who consoled mama q, not the other way around. Dante… always being the strong, silent type. No. No, what? Well, one of the things I love the most about dante is how open he is and how willing he is to talk things out. Oh. Oh. [ Chuckles ] Dante and I, we don’t keep things from each other. That’s how I know that whatever he’s going through, it’S… it’s bad. Dante: There’s got to be something that’ll help us figure out where esme’s holed up. Soil samples, grass, something like that. All we have is an earring that elizabeth found on rory. Yeah, well, the lab hasn’t come back with anything on that.

[ Cellphone ringing ] We don’t know where that thing came from. Excuse me. Yeah.

[ Ringing continues ] Cody? Yeah. Um… hi. What can I do for you? Uh, listen, I’m — I’m sorry to bug you. I just still have your number in my phone from when we thought I might be your son. That’s all right. What’s up? Uh, I was hoping maybe you knew where — where dante was. I’m standing with him right now. Why? I’m with sam at volonino’s, and she’s pretty worried. Dante didn’t come home last night. Thanks. I’m on it. Uh, where was I? You were saying you realize you have nothing to prove. That’s right. And — and right before you got into that staredown with carly. Well, that’s a — that — whatever. Whatever. [ Exhales deeply ]

And I’m sure you had a good reason. I certainly thought so at the time. Willow’s pregnant. I heard. And the argument upset her so much she fainted. Fortunately, carly was there. I never thought I’d see the day you were thankful for carly’s presence.

[ Chuckles softly ] You’re not kidding. I didn’t know what to do. I just froze. She didn’t hesitate. We both came together and helped willow. And thank god she’s gonna be okay. I know you and willow have had your differences, but I know you don’t wish her any harm. No. Of course not. Even carly admitted that.

[ Scoffs ] Wonders never cease. Yeah, but…

[ Sighs ] I just — I feel terrible about it, though. You know? I never knew that willow was having such a rough pregnancy. Um, drew, I-I think, uh, denise has her reasons, right? I-I mean, maybe she was trying to protect harmony. Lorraine — or something. Yeah, I mean, she was my friend. It was a long time ago, but still. Right! And I also think it’s very important to remember that lorraine is gone. So, tell us the truth. And I’ll make it worth your while. Okay…

[ Exhales deeply ] All right. You got me. There was no joan. Lorraine and doug… already had the baby with them when they joined the commune. These are the rest of rory’s personal effects. [ Chuckles ] Isn’t life funny? I thought that my baby would save my marriage, and… maybe it would have. But thanks to my mother, I — I never got to experience the one time that I would or could

[Voice breaking] Ever have a baby. I will never forgive madeline for robbing me of a life with my daughter. Wait, so lorraine and doug had the baby with them when they arrived at the commune? But we know that harmony wasn’t willow’s birth mother. A dna test proved that. So… so back then, did — did they claim that willow was theirs? Lorraine and doug told everyone that their friend joan had given them the baby to raise. But that was before they joined friends for peace and love. S-so you never met willow’s biological mother? No, I didn’T. So why did you lie to me? Like I said, lorraine was my friend. I wanted to protect her and protect whoever that baby grew up to be. What do you mean, protect? I always got the sense that lorraine was running from something. Or someone. About esme? Esme killed rory cabrera. Right. Yes. I heard an officer had been attacked. Killed. Isn’t that the young man that trina was seeing? It was. I was at kelly’s with trina when she found out that he’d been attacked. Joss and cam were there, too. We all went to gh together, and trina got to sit with rory as he coded, or flatlined, or whatever they call it. She’s devastated. I’m gonna put this back. Ho– how are you feeling… about all of this? I barely knew rory. Yeah, but you care about trina. Yes. Yeah, I care. I want to be there for trina. But I’m the last person who should be, so I am relegated to standing by helplessly or staying away altogether, because I am literally useless in this situation. There’s nothing that I can do. I don’t know. I think that trina would want all the support that any of her friends would give her. Even from the so-called friend who brought esme to town in the first place? How much sense does that make? You are not responsible for esme’s actions. That’s exactly what grandmother said. So it must be true, if you two agree. Your grandmother tried calling me. It must have been about officer cabrera. You’d have to ask her. Well, I’m glad she was there for you. Anyway, I hope they find esme soon. Spencer. There’s something else you need to know. So now what? Do you think that you and nikolas are gonna have some kind of… happily ever after? That you can forget about all the pain that you’ve caused people and just move on? You and — and nikolas and your brand-new baby?! There’s not gonna be a baby.

[ Both laugh ] Look, I’m sorry I lied. You clearly care about lorraine’s daughter. Whatever she’s calling herself now. But my advice… not that you asked… mm-hmm. Don’t go digging into lorraine’s past. Whatever she was running from, whatever trouble she was in, she was afraid of it. She didn’t show it very often, but she also didn’t stay in one place very long. Now, maybe she was restless, but… I think it was something more. All I’m saying is — it sounds like willow has a good life now. Mayb e she should keeplooking forward instead of back. Oh.

[ Sighs ] Denise left her gloves. Mm. Denise! Thank you for not ratting me out.

[ Scoffs ] I’d like to say it was a pleasure doing business with you, but… I just want to go home. It was stupid of me to get mixed up in this in the first place. I — I understand. Question.
