THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!
Nothing! There’s nothing! Nothing! I mean, I think we just have to face it. Sonny doesn’t keep sensitive documents out where anybody could find them. You know, m-maybe he’s got some information about this pikeman deal in his home office. Can you get in? No. It’s locked. So unless he’s got a spare key hidden in a drawer here somewhere… austin: Maybe now’s not the time to take chances. Well, how many chances like this am I gonna get? I’m just saying that you don’t want to be seen, right? What if somebody sees you? Sonny’s always got a lot of people around. He’s got that really tall bodyguard, right?
[ Keys jingling ] Ava: [Hushed] Oh. I gotta go. Ava?! Mayor collins, are — yeah. Whoa! Okay!
[ Chuckles ]
[ Groans ] I — I’m sorry. I’m just a little bit, uh… uh, yeah, I-I can see that. …Unsteady, yeah. Sure. Maybe we should find a quiet place. Uh… I had to see you. Why? What’s wrong? Where’s your ring? Well — sonny, that’s what I need to talk to you about. Tell me, ’cause now you’re worrying me. I’m just — I’m trying to find the words and the courage because once you know… there’s no going back. I’m not sure I heard you correctly, ned. Could you repeat that? Why do you keep calling me “ned”? I already told you — my name is eddie maine. Honey, uh… I-is this some kind of joke? Don’t you recognize us, daddy? We’re your family. “Daddy.” I am not your daddy. I don’t know any of you. Ned, you fell down and hit your head at the metro court pool. Do you remember that? I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, lady. Zeke: My sister’s finally hopeful again. And now I’m sitting on information that could ruin everything? Nothing has to be ruined. Portia never has to know. What?! Are you suggesting that I keep this from her? Hey! So, how’d you like your birthday? Well, let’s see. Um, I got a good swim in, I got to celebrate with people I love, and I got my very first macaroni picture frame. What else could I want?
[ Both laugh ] Don’t blame curtis for how he was behaving the night of the wedding. There was a lot going on. My issue with curtis is how he’s behaved since the wedding! Since the wedding? What are you talking about? Zeke, you only just came to town. How could you possibly know how curtis is behaving? Sorry. Sorry. Should’ve kept my mouth shut. No, no. Unh-unh. That’s not happening. I want an explanation. What’s going on?
Pilar: Thanks, kevin.
[ Gasps ] Oh, miss jerome! I didn’t realize you’d be here! Well, um, sonny and nina were — were called away. They asked me to stay with the girls until you arrived. Oh, I’m so sorry. I hope I didn’t keep you waiting long. No, no. Not too long at all. But I really, uh, should be going. When avery wakes up, please tell her that I love her very much and I’ll see her later. Miss jerome, wait. Your magazine.
[ Chuckles ] Yeah. I wouldn’t want to forget this. I was just in the middle of a really long, very interesting article. So… thank you again. Yeah.
[ Door closes ] Sonny: You can tell me anything. Good or bad, we should be honest with each other. Leo: Uncle sonny!Yes, I know that. That’s why I have to tell — sonny: Hey! Two of my favorite people. How’s it going? Brook lynn brought me here, but there are too many people, so dante and I went for a walk. Yeah. We both needed a break, huh, pal?
[ Sighs ] Tough day. Poor kid. How’s ned? Uh, they were still trying to get him out of the twilight sleep. He wasn’t awake when we went for our walk. I don’t know what scam you’re trying to pull, but I’m not falling for it. Ned — uh, eddie. You’re disoriented, which can happen after an injury to the head.
[ Stammering ] J-just please tell me. Tell me, w-what is wrong with my husband? For the last time, I’m not your husband! Tj: Ladies, could you please wait in the hall? It’s best that I examine him in private. Tracy: Come on. And stay out! What is happening? This cannot be happening. Never should have sent him to that dreadful boarding school. It cost a fortune, and he obviously did not get over that ridiculous fantasy of being a rock star. But it’s got to be the anesthesia, right? W-what do they call it? T-the twilight sleep or whatever it is. When that wears off, he’s — he’s gonna — he’s gonna be h-himself again, right? He’s gonna come back to us. Right? I’m sure dr. Ashford will straighten this whole thing out. Right. Eddie maine. I never saw that coming. Have a little seat for me. Whoa! Oh, dear.
[ Chuckles ] Are you alright? Do you want to — should we find an exam room? No. No, no. I’m fine. Really, I am. It’s just that I get a little, um… I get lightheaded when I get my blood work done. Right. Here you go. You know, generally speaking, the medical advice is to wait 10 or so minutes before you leave the office. I’m just saying. Hm. I think that dr. Chang suggested that, and I — are you serious?! You must be joking right now. Are you telling me that a patient ignored medical advice? I can’t believe that. That’s just — that’s bananas. Can’t believe it. Uh — [ Chuckles ] I’m kind of in a rush, I guess. I’m trying to make a trip abroad. Well, you must be going somewhere really remote if you need blood work. Chechen republic. Ohh… well, I mean, I-I could be wrong about this, but isn’t that an incredibly dangerous place for you to go? I wish I had a choice. Right. So y-you’re going in the political sphere of your life? You’re going in your capacity as mayor collins? Is that…? No. I think my son may be there. You know? Really? Yeah. Oh. I’m his mother. So I feel like it’s kind of my responsibility to bring him back. But you can’t go. You can’t do that. I was glad when I heard that you were moving back in with my mom. It’s good you two are working things out. Well, it’s important to me that you approve. My mom is crazy in love with you. And despite all of the mistakes she’s made… I still want her to be happy.
[ Line ringing ]
[ Cellphone buzzing ] Curtis: We all want portia to be happy. Trina: I’m glad you can forgive her. Being angry, it’s like… it’s like having a rock sitting on your shoulders. I hear you.
[ Line ringing ]
[ Sighs ]
This is curtis ashford.
Leave your message
after the beep.
[ Beep ] Curtis, it’s me. I wanted to let you know that —
[ Sighs ] You know what? Never mind. Let it go, portia. It’s none of my business. You remember when you told mom and dad that you were late for curfew because you were helping your pal derek fix a flat tire? When you were really out playing poker with your buddies? Wait. H-how do you even know that — how do I know? Because I can read you like a book. I know you. I always have, and I always will. If there’s something that you need to tell me, then tell me. We don’t keep secrets from one another. You’re not gonna like it, portia. What I don’t like is being kept in the dark. That’s what I don’t like. You won’t let this go, will you? No. Curtis kissed his ex-wife. Jordan.
what do you mean, I can’t do that? Well, okay, so — so as a doctor, you know, given your condition, I’m gonna make a strong medical recommendation that you not go anywhere dangerous outside of the U.S. Because if something were to happen, you’d need reliable medical care and you don’t speak the language. Am I right? So you’ll need a translator, you’ll need a knowledgeable guide, and you will need considerable, you know, military kind of level protection. And let me ask you — if something went wrong, do you have a foolproof way to get back out of the country and get back home? Is this your medical advice? I mean, yes, but — yeah, y-you’re not wrong. I mean, I’m a doctor, but I’m also a citizen. And, you know, as one of your constituents, I have some concerns. Who’s gonna be in charge? How long are you gonna be gone? Have you made arrangements for what will happen during your absence? I — these are all really good questions. You’ve given me a lot to think about. Good. So you’ve changed your mind? No, but, um, uh, thank you for all of the advice a-and for the water. Oh. Yeah. You’re welcome. I’m feeling much better. Good. Thanks.
[ Cellphone chimes ] Yeha, leo’s a smart kid. There’s no point in shielding him from the truth. I haven’t seen one of those in a while. My friends told me fidget spinners aren’t cool anymore. I still like mine, though. Well, you know what? If you think it’s cool, then it’s cool. You know what else is cool? What? Worrying about your dad. His brain swelled because he hit his head, but his skull can’t expand. That’s what prevents blood flow. I’ll take your word for that. And I know you know a lot about skulls and blood flow and everything, but you know what? I know a lot about people. What? Your dad is a tough customer, and he’s gonna fight like heck to get well. Dr. Ashford is still examining dad. We still don’t know anything yet. Oh, god. How am I gonna tell leo? How am I gonna explain this? Look. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, okay? Although, it’s probably best for him not to see dad until he’s himself again. Until — what until? What if he’s never himself again? What if he just decides to stay eddie maine? Okay. That’s a bridge too far, olivia, okay? Let’s just concentrate on the present. Right?
[ Sobs ] Grandmother, will you, um, stay with olivia? I’d like to go find leo and dante. -Of course. -Tell them that dad is awake. Thank you. And take it easy on her, okay? She needs our sympathy, not “snap out of it.” Is that how you see me? That’s how I just saw you in the icu room, yes. Look, I know you’re as scared as we all are, and it’s just how you react, but she needs our support, and you need to step up. Oh, god. What — what if this is just like jason? W-what if he just — what if he just never comes back to us?
[ Sobs ] There, there. I heard you were, uh, staying with josslyn over the summer because the dorms were closed? Yeah. Mm-hmm. How’s that going? Whoa. Hey. No agenda. No agenda. I was just curious, is all. Um, josslyn and her mom have been really generous about letting me stay with them while I figure things out. Sometimes you need space. I get that. But my mom doesn’T. Your mom gets it more than you think. She’s just trying to respect your boundaries. Portia can’t help it that she misses you. You are her world. Curtis kissed jordan? How do you even know that? Did you see them? No. Nothing like that. Jordan told me. So yesterday at the bar, jordan told you, a complete stranger, that she kissed her ex-husband. Is that what you’re telling me? No.
[ Chuckles ] Then you overheard her. I mean, she could have been talking about a different ex. Portia. Just trust me. I know. Well, how can I trust you when I don’t have the whole story, zeke? I-I promised that I wouldn’T. Promised who?! Jordan. We spent the night together.
[ Groans ]
[ Zeke stammers ] J-jordan made it very clear that whatever happened between us wasn’t serious and how she was still hung up on her ex. She said that they kissed once but it was over. Yeah, but she could have been talking about a different ex. It’s not like she hasn’t had past relationships. Come on! It was her ex-husband. It was curtis. I’m sorry. I wish it weren’t true but I had to tell you. Didn’t I?
Leo.Want to see your dad? Okay. We’ll let you guys know if anything changes, alright? Dad’s awake. That’s great. Oh, hey. You see that, buddy? Your dad’s awake. Can I see him? You know what? Not — not yet, kiddo. He’s a little confused. Con– what do you mean, confused? Oh, dr. Ashford said that it’s not uncommon with a head injury.
[Voice breaking] He’s, um — he’s examining him now. He’s just… hey. Uh, y-you know what, buddy, let’s go see mom. I bet you she could use a hug from her two boys, huh? -Okay. -Okay? I’ll catch up with you later. Dante: Okay. What’s the matter with ned? Oh, uncle sonny. What happened? Dad’s awake, but, um… he’s different. Different? How is he different? Yeah. You know, he’s not gonna come back to normal right away, I mean, after a hit like that.Yeah, sonny’s right. Brook lynn, you just — you just have to give him time. You don’t understand. He doesn’t know who he is. He says he’s eddie maine. -Hi, mom! -Oh, hi, honey! Dante says you need a hug. Yes, I sure do. Dante, too. Oh, yeah, okay. -Yeah. Absolutely. -The doctor’s in with ned. Yeah, uh, we ran into brook lynn. She said he woke up, but he’s — what? He’s confused? That’s putting it mildly. Hey. Dr. Ashford. How — how is ned? He doesn’t appear to be suffering from any physical deficits. There’s no loss of coordination, he’s not slurring his words, and his motor functions and reflexes are normal. Okay. Well, that’s — that’s good. That’s good, right? However, he is experiencing some cognitive symptoms such as combative behavior and profound confusion.
[ Monitor beeping ] Dad? Uh, I don’t mean to be rude, kid… but I’m no one’s dad. I miss my mom, too, but it’s complicated. I get that. When is it not? Has my mom said anything to you? She didn’t have to. I saw how she lit up when you arrived. She was just glad I came to your birthday party. News flash, trina — your mom lights up when you’re around. She doesn’t need a reason. Always. Alright. Message received. And speaking of my mom, where is she? I need her advice about this art fellowship that I’m thinking about applying for. Sounds promising. Don’t get too excited. It’s super boring. Boring progress is still progress. Last time I saw your mom, she was headed toward the restaurant. Think we should join her? -Hey. -Hi. So, I just ran into laura collins. And…? And I tried to convince her to not go to a war zone to look for dead nikolas. Did — did she listen to you? I don’t know. I — I didn’t do such a great job. I-I did the best I could. Maybe she’ll reconsider. Maybe? Yeah, maybe.Well, that’s not good enough. We have to stop her — no “maybes” about it! Right? Okay. One calamity at a time. I see you got out of sonny’s okay, in one piece. Yeah. Pilar. She’s the girls’ nanny. She walked in. But I — I covered. Maybe. I thought there were no “maybes.” What does it matter anyway? There’s no way I’m gonna be able to get into sonny’s home office, and that’s the only place he would keep anything having to do with pikeman. Well, may–
perhaps… there’s another way into sonny’s office. Yeah? Well, I’m not crawling through any air shaft. Did I say anything about you?
[ Knock on door ] Yes. What is it? Do you have a minute? Of course. Come in. Great. I won’t take much of your time. I, uh, need a favor. Anything for you. What do you need? Your resignation. I’m so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you.
[ Scoffs ] To think curtis kept trying to act like — zeke, it’s — it’s — it’s enough. Yeah. I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but consider your involvement in my marriage over. I need to talk to curtis. Well, don’t look now. Here’s your chance.
[ Curtis and trina laughing ] Hey. Hey. How are you guys doing? Uh, I wanted to talk to you about next fall, but then I’ll probably head out. Sounds good. Mom? Hm? You okay? Zeke: Trina! I won’t let you leave until I have had a chance to hang out with you poolside. What do you say? You’re on. Alright. Let’s go. Hey. See ya. Curtis: Have fun. Zeke: Curtis. My man. You know, I just had the best conversation with trina. Did you kiss jordan?
Mom had the bestcannonball when she was a kid. Better than mine, no matter how much I worked on it. But then I saw you make your first cannonball, and I was like, “what?!” You made even more of a splash than portia!
[ Laughs ] Ohh. Uncle zeke, what’s going on between my mom and curtis? What do you mean? My mom looked really upset. I shouldn’t have left her. I-I’m going back to the restaurant. Uh, trina. Don’T. Uncle zeke. What aren’t you telling me? Curtis: Yes, I kissed jordan. It was just one kiss a few weeks ago. I should have told you. And I’m sorry. A few weeks ago? That’s when we started talking again. That’s when you moved back in to the house. I don’t want to make excuses, but our marriage was hanging in the balance. I was confused. I ran into jordan. And it just happened. So jordan just kissed you out of nowhere? No, it was mutual. But…portia. Jordan — [ Sighs ] Jordan made me realize how much I want to give our marriage a second chance. Oh, my goodness. Lucky me. Oh, wait. No. Let me send her a card and thank her. That came out wrong. What I meant — I know exactly what you meant. I didn’t — I didn’t want to hurt you. And that’s why you didn’t tell me. Not when things were still so… fragile between us. Were you ever gonna tell me? Laura, if I’ve done anything to offend you… jordan, I want you to resign as commissioner of police so that you are free to serve as the acting deputy mayor of port charles. I need somebody I can trust, you know, and somebody who knows how government works. And, well, to be perfectly honest, there isn’t anyone who even comes a little bit close. So you have to accept.
[ Exhales sharply ] Now, listen, you will be responsible to find your replacement, and I’m going to need you to do that immediately, because I’m leaving. Leaving? Hence the urgency.
[ Sighs ] Laura, I’m honored. And please know I will do anything to support you. But I’m not the right person for the job. I’m sorry, but… I have to turn you down. Eddie maine? That was ned’s stage name when he sang for l&b records back in the day. Yeah, but now he thinks that’s actually who he is. Eddie maine doesn’t have a wife or kids or any family at all. You mean y-your father lost his memory? Not exactly. He remembers certain details about his life, although he doesn’t remember what happened yesterday. Uh, so h-he doesn’t remember his fall? Not even the pool. Anyways, I got to go meet up with my family. Thanks so much for the shoulder to cry on. Yeah, anytime. Leave it to ned to cause this mess. Now brook lynn has the weight of her family on her shoulders. You’re right. When I think about everything that the quartermaines are going through, my problems don’t seem so bad. So you mean I don’t have to keep putting my neck on the line? Well, that’s great. But will your cousin go for it? Mason seemed pretty keen on me being the one to get close to sonny. I think mason is nothing if not pragmatic, and I don’t think he cares as long as he gets results. Okay. Well, how do we find this mystery person? Is it you? Really? Are you gonna start making house calls over there? Oh. Yeah. No. That — [ Chuckles ] I think that it might be time for a new nanny. Now, that’s not a bad idea. Nanny has open access. She’s there when sonny isn’T. His goons don’t keep tabs on her. Right, and it might be a really good idea to get rid of pilar because you said she was suspicious of you just now, so… she’s never liked me very much. But she’s extremely loyal to sonny, and s-she won’t quit. Who said anything about her quitting? Well, then how do we replace her? You have to get sonny to fire her. As your mom and miss quartermaine know, ned is calling himself eddie maine. -Right. -Is that name familiar to you? -Yeah, it was his stage name. -Ned was an actor? No! Small mercies. He was on tour with a rock band. But not recently? No. No. It wasn’t — since, what, the ’90s? Then both the memory impairment and changes to his personality indicate that ned is suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Didn’t we know that already? Well, I’m trying to ascertain the full extent of his injury and what part of his brain has been affected. Because no two brains are alike, no two injuries are the same. I’ll try to arrive at a specific diagnosis, but you should prepare yourselves. Finding prognosis for a full recovery will be challenging. Dante: Okay. Personality changes, memory and judgment deficits, lack of impulse control. They’re all common side effects… and they may be with your husband for a while. Didn’t leo come up with you? Yeah, he’s right — well — I know you’re not my biological dad. Julian is. But you adopted me. Doesn’t sound like something I’d do. But you did. Leo. Uh, let’s go. Dad’s not feeling well. He’s got to rest. Okay? For the last time, I am not his dad! Or yours!
Olivia, leo was with dad. -Oh, god. For how long? -Long enough. -Okay. I got to find him. God knows what ned said to him. You know what? I’ll go. You might just make him worse. Why don’t you guys stay here? I’ll go look for him. No. Stop, all of you. I’ll go look for my grandson. You listen to the doctor. So, there was something you were gonna tell me or not tell me. You’re gonna tell me, right? Yeah. Oh, okay. Um… I — I-I’m an idiot. I was trying this new, um, facial clay mask from deception and… and I took off my engagement ring and I put it on the sink. And, well, to make a long story short, the clay mask, it got in my eye and I couldn’t see anything, so I-I just — I was trying to find a hand towel and I accidentally dropped my ring — beautiful ring — down the drain. I feel terrible. Did you call the plumber to check the pipe? What? The drain pipe. Never mind. Look. I’ll call my guy. He’ll find the ring. Yes, that’s a possibility. The ring’s not a problem. You know what the problem is? I’ll tell you what the problem is. I’m concerned about you and how you’re acting. You are turning me down? Why? Laura, I’m a cop, not a politician. I’m not qualified to be a deputy mayor. I think you’re selling yourself short. Oh, come on, now. Police commissioner and deputy mayor are both civil servants, and you’ve been serving as a police commissioner for 10 years now, so come on. You know how the town works. You know about all the different power systems that are in place here. And if I learned anything from eileen ashby, it’s that political savvy means absolutely nothing if the trust isn’t there. And I trust you. I trust you more than anyone. Thank you. So how can you refuse? I mean, really. You have risen to the highest rank that the pcpd has. Aren’t you ready for a new challenge? Uncle zeke, what’s going on with mom? Your mother will let you know when she is ready. Mnh-mnh. Not good enough. Gonna have to be, trina. I know you’d do anything for her, but this is between your mom and curtis. I’ll hang back. For now. You always were your mom’s little defender. What’s that supposed to mean? Oh, no one would dare upset your mom. Otherwise, they’d get a kick in the shins from…
[ Chuckles ] I wasn’t that bad. Ah, it wasn’t bad. It was amazing. But it also wasn’t one-sided. Your mom was an expert shin kicker if she felt like someone was gonna hurt her little girl. So the two of you have quite the bond, and it’s good to see you all fired up and protective. It gives me hope that that bond is still there. Doesn’t mean I’m not still angry at my mom for lying to me. When I was younger, she and I were honest about everything. At least I thought. But you’re right. My mom may have disappointed me, but I’ll always love her. And if anything — if anything happens to her, I’d be at her side. I don’t have a good explanation. This is unbelievable. I mean, all of this talk about honesty and openness, but you had no trouble, no problem not sharing this with me. You can’t compare this one transgression, kissing jordan one time, to your 20 years of lying about trina’s paternity. Oh. O-okay. So wait. That gives you a lifetime pass? Is that what you’re telling me? Curtis, I deserve to know the truth. We’re married. I don’t understand what happened. I was in rough shape, okay? I started talking to jordan. We had been hanging out for a — for a while. Wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. You said — you said it was one kiss. And now you’re making it sound like it was more than that. Honey, it was nothing more than that. But you were thinking about her and you sought her out. That’s what you did. It wasn’t like that. You were confiding in her, a-and she comforted you, right? Only because we have history and — that’s all it is, is history. Really? Because, to me, it sounds real current. And we both know that jordan has been harboring feelings for you. I just never knew that you felt the same way. Tracy:
There you are! You’re quite the runner, aren’t you? Why did my dad say he wasn’t my dad? Technically, he’s not. That’s what I said. But then he said he never adopted me. Leo, what do you know about me? You’re mean.
[ Laughs ] Maybe. But I’m direct. And I’m gonna tell you the truth. So, your dad fell… and he hit his head so hard that he’s confused. He’s so confused, he doesn’t recognize his family. That hurts my feelings. I imagine it hurts yours, too. But I know that somewhere deep inside, your dad knows exactly who we are. He just can’t remember it right now. But he knows it. Because the man in that bed, he is your dad. He will always be your dad. Got it? Mm-hmm. -Do you have any questions? -Just one. When will I get my husband back? Ned needs to be seen by a neurologist and psychiatrist, and they’ll have recommendations for how to proceed. Until then, we won’t know with any certainty when ned will recover. But it’s not like he’s gonna be eddie maine forever. We’ll do everything possible to treat him, but it’s too soon to tell. This is just crazy. Okay. This is crazy! I’m sorry. I wish I could do more. It’s okay, tj.
[ Sobs ] In the meantime, I’ll call in the additional specialists I mentioned, and we’ll determine a course of treatment. Okay. Thank you.
I can’t get pilar fired. She’s been working for sonny for years. Avery loves her. Okay, but will avery love pilar more than… ava, who’s dead and gone, thank you, cousin mason? I’m just saying. Who is she gonna turn to? Nina? Carly? Alright! Alright. Point taken. Pilar’s out. You can get this done? In my sleep. I don’t know what to say. Say “yes.” I need you by my side. The city of port charles needs you. I said I would do anything for you, and I meant it. So I accept. Welcome aboard, deputy mayor ashford.
[ Chuckles ] You like the sound of that? I do.
[ Both laugh ] I always knew you’d stand up for your mom, but it’s good to hear you say it. You’re not the first person to make the case for my mom. Not even the first person today. Curtis went out of his way to tell me how much my mom missed me. Uncle zeke, what aren’t you telling me? Maybe you should keep your distance. From who? From curtis. Jordan is my past. You are my future. I want to be with you. I want to believe you. Please. Please, honey, don’t give up on us. Not when we’re so close to finding our way back to each other. I wish it was that simple. I just — I can’t be here. I can’t be here right now. You’re concerned about me? You had me thinking the worst, like… you know, like you were gonna tell me something terrible. What you tell me is that you lost your engagement ring. Y-you think I care about that? Well, sonny, it’s my engagement ring that I love, and it’s — you know, it’s beautiful. It’s expensive. It’s a piece of jewelry. As long as I’m with you, I — that’s all I care about. This is fun.
[ Chuckles ] Ohh! Did I break it? I can get you another one! It drops all the time. See? It’s okay. So it is. Olivia: What if ned comes back to us? Dante: He will. But y-you heard what dr. Ashford said. Okay, tj is just doing his job, mom, letting you know possible outcomes, okay? So let’s wait for the neurologist to get in here, the psychiatrist to get in here, and see what happens. Okay. Okay? Give it some time. Okay? Okay. Thanks, honey. It’s gonna be okay.
On the next “General Hospital” —
