hey, I am checking in with everyone about the shooting yesterday. Do you have anything to add to your statement? Anything else come to mind? I’m sorry. I already told you everything I knew. I wish I could be more helpful. All right. Thanks anyway. I don’t understand. Don’t you have everything that you need? I can’t get you everything else. The deception crew is watching me very closely. You need to be stealthier. Why would I? Shh. Hey, you. Hey. Sorry if I’m interrupting. You’re not. That’s not how it looked. Ah, all right. Aren’t you going to give me a kiss first? No, that’s coming.

[ Thermometer beeps ] No, you’re good. No fever. Good morning. Is that coffee for me? Oh, yes, it is. Oh. The smell of corinthos coffee probably woke me up.

[ Chuckles ] How long have I been asleep for? This time? Well, your morning nap almost turned into an afternoon siesta. Oh. Best sleep I’ve had in weeks. Being home is healing. Although I still feel like I’m dreaming. Well, there’s only one way to be sure. That sundress you tried on really complements your eyes. You should totally get it. Thanks. I liked the halter top you tried on. It’s a little different for you, though. Oh, my old style belongs to another life. When my guardianship ends, I need to send a statement to the world.

[ Squeals ] This is sasha 2.0.

[ Chuckles ] Oh! This calls for champagne. Should we add some orange juice to justify the early hour? No.

[ Chuckles ] I can’t believe how much energy I have after playing all night. It’s the adrenaline rush. Winning will do that.

[ Chuckles ] Congratulations to you both. Listen, um, I know that one win won’t make us square, but I can pay you one installment today. Mm. Champagne is on me. Enjoy your win. Wow, wow. Tonight was like lightning in a bottle! Except lightning isn’t supposed to strike twice. So you’re clear on the plan? I am clear on the plan. I am to keep the lawyer occupied, busy enough just so you can have a proper snoop. I do have one quick question, though. Why in the world did you have me get all glammed up when this lawyer is probably some short, stodgy, balding, boring, bifocalled attorney? Why? The charm offensive is tried and true. Would you rather I be the honey trap? No, I’m better suited for this, as you know. Let’s just hope that we can find out what martin’s been hiding from me.

I’ve missed this. It’s been torture not being close to you. What’s wrong?

[ Sighs ] Um… unfortunately, the torture isn’t quite over. Whoa!

[ Chuckles ] Yeah. I don’t know what happened. It must have been an off night. Do you have any idea how much money you’ve cost me? I’m better at counting cards than counting losses. From where I stand, you’re a failure at both. Your job is to always get me a profit. Look, I’m sorry, ms. Wu. I hired you expressly to avoid large payouts to players. Yet I’ve operated at a loss for two games in a row. You can’t afford the luxury of “off nights.” And if I have to pay, so must you. Ohhh, finally. It feels like my luck is changing.

Slainte. And with your daughter-in-law on my new drug regimen, your run of good fortune has no end in sight.

[ Sighs ] Eh. What do you think of this one? Wow. Well, that’ll certainly “send a statement to the world.”

[ Chuckles ] And to think that I’ve spent the last year praying the press would ignore me. I guess I’m ready for them to sit up and take notice again. Okay, well, now for something more comfy and pg-rated. These are a little short for you, don’t you think? Oh, they’re not for me. I had logan’s personal shopper select a few items in willow’s size. Comfortable mommy gear, but still lovely, like willow. That’s very thoughtful. You sound surprised. No, no, more like in awe. If being a great friend had any sway on the judge, he’d grant your petition without a second thought. Seems like lately, every time I see the two of you, you got your heads together. I plead the fifth. Can’t a woman spend time with her granddaughter? At ease, ladies. This isn’t an interrogation, just an observation. I’m just happy to see you. How are you holding up after last night? I was actually just catching grandmother up on the shooting and how you saved the day. No, just doing my job. No one does it better. I admire your passion and commitment. I could say the same about you, the way you feel about music. But you gave that up to go back to work at deception. Man: [ Grunts ]

[ Thud ] It’s you?! Ow! What the hell is wrong with you?! God’s sake, anna. Anybody ever told you for one little thing, you pack a ridiculously big punch? Yes, all the time. You’ll find out what else I’m packing if you don’t tell me what you’re doing here.

yesterday, when you steppedout to make arrangements for my discharge, the oncology nurse went over terry’s instructions with me in more depth. As you know, there are a lot of do’s and don’ts. Oh, I know, I know. I fell asleep reading the packet last night. I do have the food, the medication schedule, and the visitor protocol down, but I will make time the rest of the day to finish the packet, so… michael, I’m sure you will. You have barely had time to do anything. You’ve done so much to make my homecoming smooth. Yeah, what else would I do, willow?

[ Sighs ] You’re incredible. You do nothing but think of me. You’ve sacrificed so much for me already. That’s why I hate having to ask you to sacrifice even longer. Come on, what are you talking about? What did the — what did the nurse say? That we can’t make love. How did you get a keycard for this room? Oh, most probably the same way you did. That’s doubtful. Were you following me? No, not really. Kind of, sort of. It was — I don’t know. Martin. All right, fine. Just give me a minute. You do know this hurts, right? What? Somehow, word reached valentin about the shooting, so he reached back to me. He was worried about you, wanted me to check on you, so I was on my way out over to your place, and I saw you crossing the lobby. You were following me. Uh… I didn’t notice that, I must be slipping. Oh, no, I’d say you still got it, based on the amount of pain coming from this part of my face. In any case, that’s my story. Why did you cross the police tape? What the hell are you looking for? Oh, I’m sure the pcpd did a thorough job. I just wanted to check for myself because this is where they found the rifle that the sniper used. I see. And that is of what interest to you, anna? Hello, good morning. We’re here for our appointment. Right on time. I’ll let him know you’re here. Mr. Montgomery, your 10:00 am is here. Thank you, cheyenne. Hi, ladies. I’m jackson montgomery. Oh, it’s nice to meet you. I’m felicia. We spoke on the phone. We did, we did. Good to see you. This is my sister, lucy martin. Mrs. Martin, I’m so, so sorry for your loss. Oh, please, please, please do call me lucy, and thank you. You know, this whole affair with my husband’s estate, it’s very confusing for me. I mean, I have never lived in pennsylvania, but he did for quite a while. He lived with his other family. Well, I can see how that might complicate matters some. Why don’t we all go into my office and see if we can’t untangle this a bit, huh? I’ll just wait out here. Okay, after you. Thank you. Once willow can get out again, this would be perfect for a romantic outing with michael. Yeah, or she can sell it and take that overdue trip to paris. You know, willow would never spend this amount of money on herself, but she deserves a whole new wardrobe for her new chapter. It’s beautiful. She’ll love it. Mm. I’m happy to contribute. You know, it’s incredible. Our friend has all-new dna. It’s like she’s been reborn! You’re very philosophical today.

[ Chuckles ] What’s up with that? My court-appointed shrink. He prescribed something that totally revolutionized my approach to wellness. Much as I’d like to, I can’t cover your losses. Last night, I received bad news about the proprietor of this establishment, a man I’m fond of. Yeah, n’neka told me about curtis and the shooting. And your incompetence has only compounded my distress. Yeah, I’m sorry. And I — look, I completely understand if you no longer want to retain my services. You don’t think my granddaughter is committed to her job at deception? Can I speak with my girlfriend in private? You know, they make a mean iced cappuccino at the bar. It sounds dreadful. Why would anybody add ice to a perfectly good cappuccino? But I will leave, since apparently, that’s what you want me to do. Wow, that was impressive. I could count on one hand how many people granny will listen to.

[ Chuckles ] Why do you always seem so tense around tracy? It’s complicated. I know she wants you to have a career to fall back on, but you don’t, brook lynn. All you need is your talent. Don’t let tracy or linc or any of your personal demons make you doubt your talent. I love how much confidence you have in me. Unlike tracy? Is she pressuring you? Chase, leave it. No, I can’T. Not if your grandmother is making you unhappy. She doesn’t care if I don’t want to work at deception. Then why not tell her to back off? Because she put me up to it.

We can kiss, cuddle, caress, but we have to put sex on hold. And I’m so sorry. I mean, we didn’t even get a chance to consummate our marriage, and now I’m making you wait even longer. Willow, you’re not making me do anything. This is about your health. I’m not upset or surprised about it. I knew you’d say that. But you can tell me if you’re disappointed. You know what’s disappointing? Coming home to an empty house. Or telling wiley, “I don’t know” whenever he asks me when you’re coming home. Imagining a life without you. Which is why no matter how many times you brought up the subject, I never wanted to talk about it. Which is why I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure that you’re home to stay with me and our family. But what if that takes a while? I want you.

[ Chuckles ] I’m disappointed we can’t be intimate like we used to. Well, first of all, hold that thought.

[ Chuckles ] Second of all, you do have me. And when you are healthy and ready — I’ll definitely be ready. Well, there you go.

[ Chuckles ] You may or may not know this, but I am currently unemployed, so, you know, I was just hoping that maybe I could be a little useful. Martin: Yeah, well, call it a hunch, but I suspect valentin wouldn’t be too thrilled if he knew you were putting yourself at risk. Oh. Well, what do you want? My client cares about you. You know, he misses you. Well, I miss him, too, obviously. You know, truth be told, as factious and demanding as the man can be, I do, too. Apart from laura, he’s my closest confidante, and now they’re both on the other side of the world, and just when I need them most. Why? What’s wrong? Wait a minute. You’re a woman. Oh. Can’t get anything past you. And you’re close with lucy. Uh, I have been in close proximity to lucy for extended periods of time. No, no, no, I mean, it’s about lucy. You’re good with riddles, I want you to help me with one. An unexpected and unmistakable chill has suddenly developed between us, and I, for one, wonder why. Impressive. Mm-hmm. If you need to pop out for any reason, don’t mind me. Or if you need to overnight something. Or if you want to take an early lunch, it’ll be our little secret. It’s not even 11:00 am.

[ Chuckles ] Yeah, right, yeah. Uh, cheyenne, could you run around the corner to the gourmet coffee shop and get mrs. Martin some coffee? Oh, I’ll make a fresh pot. No, no, no, mrs. Martin has a very particular coffee order.

[ Chuckles ] It’d probably be best if you just went out and got it, huh? Can I get you anything? Thank you, I would love a latte. A latte it is, and something for yourself, okay? Lucy: Don’t forget my cinnamon. My sister takes her coffee very seriously. Letting you go doesn’t solve my problems. I still need a reliable ringer. And clearly, that’s not me, you know? Not any longer. Look, we had a good run, but, you know, I’d hate to let you down again. Then don’T. Gladys: Did you see the look on his face when I pulled out that third jack?

[ Chuckles ] Um… doc, I gotta ask you. This drug sasha’s taking — it’s not dangerous, right? No, no, not at all. Millions of people take it. Good. Because I need her guardianship to stay in place a bit longer, but I do care about her. Gladys, I explained this before. The medication is harmless on its own. It’s the interaction with sasha’s antidepressant that will create the behaviors you wanted, none of which are life-threatening. She’ll feel off-kilter, foggy, prone to mood swings. But will that be enough? I mean, will people even notice some simple side effects? Trust me. People will notice. What exactly did your doctor prescribe you? Meditation. I don’t vocalize, though. I just breathe. Oh.

[ Cellphone rings ] Oh, hey, sorry. It’s georgie — one second. Georgie? Oh, stop yelling at your brother. Okay, fine, put me on speakerphone. James malcolm west, you give your sister back her journal right now. No, don’t make her have to ask you again or call me again.

[ Sighs ] You know what? Just so you know, we are having a talk when I get home. I’m serious. Will meditation help me with my squabbling children?

[ Chuckles ] Even zen has its limits. Ugh, I’m going to have to give in and buy a new place where everyone has their own room. I love my apartment, but it’s time to move on. That’s the spirit! Lean into possibility. I’m going to lean into some real-estate listings. Um, I really need to get back to my kids. You good? Yeah! Okay. Why does tracy want you working at deception? Oh, that’s between me and brook lynn. You know what? This coffee drink is not half bad. Lucky I’m open-minded. It kind of sounds like there’s more to the story. You know what, detective? I know that you are trained to look for crimes everywhere, but this really doesn’t concern you. It does if you’re exerting undue influence. Undue, schm-undue. I’m just compelling. Like a guillotine. That’s enough. You know what? You’re right, granny. It is enough. I am done jumping through your hoops. Say this, not that. Work here, not there. Hide this. Hide what? Be careful. You know you can tell me anything.

[ Exhales deeply ] Months ago, I asked granny a favor that concerns you, and she granted it. What favor could tracy possibly do for me? Getting your badge back.

Mr. Bell. Do I have your attention? Uh, yeah, yeah, sorry. The more you apologize, the less it means. So is this funny business, mr. Bell? An accomplished ringer who couldn’t lose suddenly can’t perform. I find that odd. Well, you know, happens to the best of us from time to time. Then why insist my best course of action is to dismiss you after you recently pressed me to stay on? Are you trying to get fired? If sasha takes the new medication as prescribed, then her body already metabolized it. Its interaction with her antidepressant is already having an effect. Surprise! I hope you don’t mind me dropping by like this, but that’s what you get for adding me to the approved guest list. Can I come in? Uh, yeah, yeah, willow would be happy to see you. But you have to wear a mask. All right, sure. Here, hold this. Willow, I’m here! Sasha! Hi! Hi! What a nice surprise. I wanna hug you! Okay, until we can do that, let’s close our eyes and reach out our hands and pretend to hug. Ahhh, can you feel the embrace?

[ Cell phone rings ] Excuse me one second. Hey, joss, what’s up? No, no, I’m just getting willow settled. Why? Oh, my god. When?

[ Whispering ] Yesss. Ah, third time’s a charm. All right, I’ll bite. Describe this unmistakable chill that has developed between you and lucy. Sit. Well, maybe that’s — I chose the wrong word. It’s more like, um… more like a distance thing, you know? And I don’t like it. I’m not used to being kept at arm’s length. Usually, you can’t slip a ruler between the pair of us. Oh, visual. No, no, no, what I mean is, up to this point, we’ve been on the same page about practically everything, and I mean everything. You know, vacation, family, home. Home. [ Chuckles ] Perfect evening — shaken, not stirred, true crime over sports, cake over pie, companionship over marriage. Okay, stop right there. That’s your problem. ‘Cause the lucy coe I know, she likes marriage. No, she doesn’T. I mean, she used to like marriage, but, you know, been there, done that several times, as have I, and neither of us is anxious to repeat the same mistake. Is that what she told you? Mm-hmm. She didn’t mean it. She’s inexhaustibly romantic. No, and I’m telling you, lucy insists she’s happy with things as they are. Yet here we are dissecting your relationship. So has marriage been brought up lately? Actually, yes. But we both said we’re not interested. It’s one thing to say it to yourself, but it is quite another thing when the man you love says, “nope, not happening.” So tracy orchestrated my rehiring? That’s how I got the ccrb meeting and my badge back? Ah — actually, all I did was get the board back in the room. They made their decision based on the case you presented, so really, that’s all you. I had to make things right, chase. I cost you your badge, so I called the one person I knew who could help. And now that person is holding it over your head. Hello? That person is standing right here. Okay, so how does deception fit into all this?

[ Cellphone rings ] I got to ta this. Detective chase. Are you under the influence? I don’t do drugs, you know that. No, I mean truth serum. First, it’s your colleagues, and now it’s chase. How long is this confessional gonna go on? When I have nothing left to confess. Look, my relationship ended with chase in the past over secrets. No, your relationship ended because you got caught. Chase doesn’t want me to be perfect, just honest.

[ Scoffs ] Transparency leads to questions, which you will soon find out when mr. Perfect gets off the phone. Was that about the shooting, or…? I can’t get into it right now, but I am going to need some answers from you.

This is why I didn’t want to say anything. I didn’t want to involve you. Brook lynn, I have to get back to work. So unfortunately, this is gonna have to wait. Work, as in the job I helped you get back? I owe you nothing, and neither does brook lynn, and if you are strong-arming her into something unethical, you know I’m gonna find out. Chase, I am so sorry. I am so done with secrets. I have to go. And this isn’t over. A, b, c, d, e, f, G. H, I, j, K… l, m, m, m, m, ma.

[ Scoffs ] I knew it was too easy. Lucy: I haven’t been in pine valley in so long. It’s a shame the chateau closed down. Well, actually, the real shame is I’m not going to be able to do much for you at this juncture, but it was a real pleasure to make your acquaintance. Oh, and it was such, such a pleasure making yours. But you’re right, the chateau was the gold standard here in pine valley for many, many years, but I think you’re going to enjoy this new restaurant I told you about. See you at 8:00. Can’t wait. I am so sorry it took so long. They were mobbed. Thank you, I’ll take mine to go.

[ Giggles ] So you think lucy’s angry because I don’t want to get married again? I would bet my career on it, but… you don’t have one. Yeah. But that doesn’t make any sense. I mean, why would you put your head back in a lion’s mouth? She’s heard all of my horror stories. She knows all about my track record. Hell, you know about it. You tried to blackmail me over it. Oh, bygones. Look, I don’t think that lucy would ever compare herself to your exes. I think she sees herself as someone entirely different. She is entirely different. I never met anybody like lucy before. She gets me. So what’s the problem?

[ Mockingly ] What’s the problem? Why wouldn’t you just consider it, at least, you know? You mean apart from the fact that mama swears she’s only going to walk me down the aisle so many times? Okay, you know, make light of it if you want, but buy yourself a sweater because that chill that you’re feeling from lucy, that is liable to set in. And, oh, you know what? I want to amend something that I said earlier about lucy not comparing herself to your exes because there is one area where she is keeping score, and that is that you were willing to marry them, but you refused to take the plunge with her. Okay, maxie and I thought that this would be perfect for relaxation, and it’s so warm. Look, it’s fleece. So if you get cold, you’re totally covered. Plus, it’s got a hoodie, so your ears will be warm. Or if you get cold, we got you this super cute short set. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down, I can’t keep up. Clearly, you two thought of everything. We just want your homecoming to be perfect. Just being here is perfect with the people I care about.

[ Sighs ]

[ Gasps ] Okay. I got you this amazing thing. I love it so much! Isn’t it exquisite? Here, rub it to your cheek. Oh, I — I really shouldn’t, I… I have to wash or clean everything before I wear it or use it. Oh. There’s a security tag. Why would I try to get fired? I mean, you pay me nightly more than I make in months working with the horses. Then why continue with horses? Well, they make me happy. Are you happy in my employ, mr. Bell? Well, yeah. Who wouldn’t be? Am I right, li? There’s one way to find out if that’s true. Bring the cards used during the game. Yes, ms. Wu.

Acy: Well, I guess I’m theonly one in the doghouse. Thank god. And speaking of work… chase isn’t the only one with job responsibilities. Don’t you have someplace to be? Nope. Chase now knows that you helped get him reinstated at the pcpd. So? So you no longer have any leverage over me. The sun is out, pool awaits, and today seems like a wonderful day to resign from deception again. Yes, but you’re forgetting something, my darling girl.

[ Chuckling ] What’s that? You committed corporate espionage. What would your pious policeman think about that? So my advice to you is very simple. Just be honest with lucy. You know, share your frustrations about marriage. I have. She’s heard them all. No, she’s heard you bitching about your ex-wives. You have to figure out if this is translated into an institutional phobia. Tell her your fears. But before you do that, I think you need to be very honest with yourself. Are you worried that it’s too soon? Are you concerned about compatibility? Are you afraid of failing again, or is it something else? Well, it might be too soon, but god knows we’re compatible.

[ Chuckles ] You were in that safe house. Oh, god, martin, stop. All right, fine. Yes, all of the above. Frightened, concerned, afraid. I’d hate to commit again and then fail again. What? You forgot, there’s something else. Because there is another reason, isn’t there? Lucy: Come here, come here. Okay, so tell me — how did I do? Did you have enough time? Did you get anything? Did you just make a date with the man you spent the last hour lying to? I know. Good point. You know, it usually takes me half the time. I’m slipping. It must be trauma from that whole victor thing. I said no whipped — lucy! Okay, maybe I did… make a date, per se. Remember what happened when you went rogue with victor? Spending more time with jackson montgomery opens us up to exposure. Okay, then did you get anything? I don’t see anything. Did you find a file? Did you find a flash drive? What’d you get? No, I got nothing. The assistant was glued to her desk. By the way, that was a brilliant gambit of yours, ordering coffee.

[ Chuckles ] Thank you very much. Anna devane, eat your little heart out. And making that ridiculous coffee order annoyingly complicated was a stroke of genius. Yeah, yeah, you know, it was just… all part of my plan. So you’re right, I do need to continue to search, and I think I know where. The maquillage file wasn’t with the other documents, but I think it’s in that safe. I’ll bet if I can get into it, I’ll find that file and we can discover what martin’s been hiding. Can you really actually break into safes? Yes, I have skills. So I guess it’s a good thing that jackson will otherwise be occupied tonight at 8:00. Cheers. I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about. I mean, all of the reasons you yourself just listed except for compatibility are perfectly valid and legitimate enough for me not to want to get married again. Oh, there’s a giant one in particular. One that hasn’t been listed. One that I found out when I was blackmailing you about your three ex-wives. Because one of them is so different from the others, isn’t she? Yeah. Number three, she’s far more sadistic. And rich! She’s the only one you don’t pay alimony to. In fact, she pays you a cool 50k a month. And if you remarry, your third ex-wife is going to cut you off, and that’s what this is really all about, isn’t it, marty? You can either marry lucy or you can ride the gravy train, but you can’t do both. And what you can’t tell lucy is that you’ve already made your choice. I’ll have to catch some winks before my next session.

[ Chuckles ] I will see you at sasha’s next session. I believe I will have a lot to report to the judge. Do you have something you want to tell me? She’s up to something. Your chance to come clean ends when li returns. Look, um, just give me a chance to explain. It — it won’t happen again. No, it won’T.

[ Scoffs ] White ink. I swear, I don’t know where that came from.

[ Speaks native language ] All right, all right, okay. I can explain that. No need. It’s evident what happened here. You threw my game.

[ Groans ] So much for everything being perfect. I’ll have to grab this and return it to the store to have the tag removed. No, it’s okay, just don’t even worry about it.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Door opens ] Hey, uh, chase is here. Oh. The more, the merrier. Tell him to come in. Willow, it’s good to see you outside the isolation room. Tell me about it.

[ Chuckles ] Sasha, I need to talk to you. Hold on one second. Michael, this blouse is for you to take willow someplace nice, like a sunset cruise. Isn’t it gorgeous? Sasha — just wait. I’m sorry, this can’t wait.

[ Sighs ] Sasha gilmore, you are under arrest.
