Well, after my decades with the ISA and my years on the force, I know this is a very high-risk ask, Detective.
I will–I will not deny that.
And I also know that the odds are not in Lucas’ favor to carry this out.
No, of course they’re not. You know, and it may be the brave and noble thing to fearlessly rat out the son of a bitch who’s selling drugs in Statesville, but what good does it do you to be brave and good if you’re dead, OK? So my answer to your ask is most definitely no. Most definitely, I will not put my son in danger.

Man, I just remember watching her and her date on the dance floor on New Year’s Eve. They were just having such a great time, you know? And then just like that, life is shattered.

Yeah. And I can’t help thinking, like, if– if Steph and I hadn’t left the party early or if my investigator’s brain had been working… Anyway.

And the money could have bought the precious time that we needed. You blew it, Justin. You know, Theresa and Brady, they just keep saying all of this falls on EJ, but it really doesn’t. It’s not EJ’s fault. It’s not Rafe’s fault. It’s not anybody else’s fault but yours.
Kate, look, I get that you’re worried about Lucas’ safety. I understand that. But if we do not get him involved, if we do not bust who’s responsible for this drug crisis, it’s just gonna keep going on and on. More people are gonna get hooked. More people will die.
Harris, you are absolutely right about that. That is very true. We were heartbroken when we heard about Holly.
Yes, of course we were, and when I think about what Nicole’s going through, especially after losing her newborn son, I feel for her. I mean, I really do. But this is my son that we’re talking about, and I’m going to protect him.

My brilliant Abraham. As we all know, just two generations ago, this would have all been impossible. Oh, but, you know, we’ve come a long way indeed. But with what’s being reported all over the country, I think that we backslid somewhat. That’s why it is so very important to keep Dr. King’s dream alive.

Yeah, it was a mistake, which has been rectified. He’s been moved to another cell, one of the newer cells with security cameras. And I personally saw to it that he was moved there, and I brought him some ice, by the way, and talked to the on-duty guards there and put the fear of God in them. So rest assured, he will not be in danger anymore.

Yeah. He’s a brave kid. He wanted me to let you guys know that he’s doing OK. I’m gonna have one of the medics from here go down there periodically and check in on him.

Harris, I’m not sure you’re aware of this, but Lucas kidnapped my daughter Sami. That’s his crime. That’s why he’s in Statesville. so I got to admit, I am somewhat ambivalent about him getting released.
I can understand that. But Kate is your wife, and she wants nothing more than her son to be free.
That is true, and I love my wife with all my heart, and Lucas did get us to Orpheus. So I’ll tell you what. I will work on getting over my ambivalence if Kate changes her mind about getting Lucas involved in this.

Do I have any thoughts on the growing drug problem? Well, let me put it this way. If we had an hour, five hours, ten, I could not get through expressing them all.

Oh, yes, indeed. Oh, OK. Well, here goes. Fellow citizens of our wonderful city of Salem, when I was growing up in the ‘s and ‘s, of course there were drugs around. You had your hippies with their weed and the less risk-averse with their coke and LSD. And let me tell you, a lot of my contemporaries really got screwed up in the pursuit of fun.
[coughs] Oh, sorry. And sadly, you also had homeless addicts and wayward kids from the projects who tried to escape reality the only way they could: using drugs. And, well, that’s going on today, as we–

[coughs] From what I’ve read, drugs have been a problem for centuries.

[coughs] From what I’ve also read is that they’re more potent now, especially opioids, which can be times stronger than heroin. times. And now with this increased potency of all drugs, well–
[coughing] Overdosing is what’s causing people to die.

I have done everything I can, period.

Kate, I think Harris might have a way to make his request more appealing.

How would you do that? I mean, why would you do that?
I would do that to save lives. And from because of what I know and what I’ve heard and knowing you, Kate, I know your son is a decent human being. He’s not a danger to society, and he’s already been punished enough.
Well, all of that is completely true, OK? I’m gonna–I’m going to have to think about it, OK? And you are going to have to promise me that you could really do that.

Well, to state the obvious, that depends on how or whether Lucas can pull this off.
[scoffs] Well, that’s a really big question, isn’t it? Even the crime that he did commit, he couldn’t help but having that come to light, could he, so how is he gonna pull this off?
Well, as I told Harris, Lucas was able to get John and Steve and me to Orpheus. He is very smart. I have complete confidence in him, Kate.
[sighs] That’s very touching. It is. But if he gets caught, he could die.
In my opinion, that is very unlikely. What is more likely is that Lucas gets his life back.

Katie, Katie, I truly believe that Lucas can pull this off. I trust that he is clever enough and will be strongly motivated to make this happen without jeopardizing his own safety. And as much as I’ve gone back and forth on Harris, I trust him on this too. So let’s not go to the negative here. Let’s think about the very strong positive. Lucas can regain his freedom. He can come home to his family, be with his kids, his grandkids.
