Audra: Hey.

Victoria: Hello. Um, I was looking for nate. I have some follow-up notes about something we discussed earlier. Do you happen to know where he went?

Audra: Uh, he ran out not too long ago. He was, uh, running late for some couple’s time he and elena had planned. You know, nate is such a sweet guy, right? He’s always working hard to balance his career with romance.

[ Sighs ] If only all men could be like him, right? In my book, that man’s a keeper. Elena is such a lucky woman.

Nate: Hey. Sorry I am late. My meeting with victoria ran long, but it was worth it. Totally exhilarating. I’m talking, even when we’re on opposite sides of an issue, somehow we still inspire each other. The synergy between us is unreal.

Elena: “Unreal.” That’s how you describe your relationship with your boss?

Nate: Of course. We have much more than an employer/employee relationship.

Elena: How much more? Look, nate, I’m glad that you’re enjoying your work, but tell me, what’s going on with you and victoria?

Kyle: There you are. I was worried when you didn’t come back to the office. Look at you. Even with the weight of the world on your shoulders, you still somehow manage to look as lovely as ever.

Summer: Must be all the jabot products.

Kyle: That smile didn’t exactly reach your eyes. Are you worried about my parents fleeing town? Or jeremy stark? Or maybe it’s your dad’s strange relationship with sally? Or are you concerned about the safety and well-being of our son?

Summer: How about all of the above?

Kyle: I know there’s a lot going on right now, but we’ll work through it.

Summer: How? How are we going to work through this, kyle? I mean, I… I’m trying to stay positive, but there’s so much going on, and I haven’t even told you about the run-in that I had with my mom earlier today.

Kyle: What happened with phyllis?

Summer: I just have a bad feeling.

Kyle: About what?

Summer: I thought that she was letting go of her obsession with diane, she was going to focus on rebuilding her relationships with me and daniel. But now that that doesn’t seem to be working out for her,

Kyle: Mm-hmm, her focus is back on my mother.

Summer: Yeah.

Jack: That must be a very good page.

Diane: What’s that?

Jack: You’ve been on that same page for 20 minutes.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’m sorry, jack. I’m just… I’m having a hard time focusing. I have this terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that something’s wrong. I mean, we’re here, relaxing in the cabin, safe and sound, but back home, there’s a storm coming.

Jeremy: [ Scoffs ] Amazing. Diane and jack went to all that trouble to convince us they went on some extravagant world tour, but they never left wisconsin?

Phyllis: They’re in a little rustic cabin in the woods just up the highway.

Jeremy: Did they really think they could get away with this? Oh, that’s so brazen. Well, if nothing else, they’re quite clever.

Phyllis: They think they’re clever.

Jeremy: Yeah, they also think they’re untouchable. It’s time to prove them wrong. Sometimes, the lows of bipolar depression

Jeremy: Well, it sounds like you’ve been thinking about this, so I’m sure you have some suggestions.

Phyllis: I do. But I need you to know something. When I’m in, I’m in 100%. There’s nobody in this town that is more resourceful than I am in getting what they want. Do you get that?

Jeremy: Oh, that’s good to hear. So what do we do first?

Phyllis: Your plan is good. I think it’s very solid. But this is the thing. This is the abbott cabin that they’re staying at. They know everything about it. They know the whole lay of the land up there.

Jeremy: Okay, so you’re saying we need to even the playing field?

Phyllis: I’m saying we need to lure them back here.

Jeremy: Well, if you want them back, there are plenty of things I can do to get them back here.

Phyllis: I know that, but i want to be very clear on this. Very, very clear. My family can’t get hurt. My daughter, kyle, harrison, they can’t be used as pawns.

Jeremy: Okay, so how are we going to get them to come back to town?

Phyllis: We make them think that the dangerous element has disappeared. We basically do the same thing to them that they did to you, but we do it better. We do it much better.

Nate: What’s going on between me and victoria? What are you talking about? Where is this coming from?

Elena: I ran into audra at crimson lights, and what started off as casual conversation turned into something rather enlightening.

Nate: Okay, enlighten me. What did she have to say?

Elena: Audra noticed an interesting dynamic developing between you and victoria, something that crosses the boundaries of a normal employee/employer relationship. You know, more personal than professional?

Nate: No, I don’t know.

Elena: I haven’t accused you of anything, nate, but I need you to be straight with me.

Nate: Always. Look, trust me, the only thing that’s going on between me and victoria is business. She’s my boss, and I admire her, the way her mind works, her business acumen. Look, I am learning a lot from her, and I won’t deny that we work well together, okay? She encourages me to grow and expand. Nothing, and I mean nothing like the way I was stifled and dismissed at chancellor-winters. I don’t understand why we have to go through this again. I thought you understood my relationship with victoria, and, honestly, I thought you appreciated it.

Victoria: You know, I have to agree with you. Elena is very fortunate to have a man like nate in her life, but I feel like I’m very lucky to have him as an employee. And you’re lucky, too, aren’t you?

Audra: I am, yes.

Victoria: You know, your instincts were correct about tucker. I paid a visit to devon, and he all but confirmed tucker offering mccall to him.

Audra: I know the man quite well.

Victoria: That’s exactly what I’m counting on. I need you to let me know what you think his next move might be.

Audra: Well, if my instincts are on point, when tucker doesn’t get his way, he either fights harder, gets angry, or moves on to something else. It all just depends on his mood at the time.

Victoria: So it’s possible that he could get fed up with devon if his offer isn’t getting the kind of traction that he’s looking for.

Audra: Yeah, his attention span lasts as long as his desire for something and his certainty he can get it. So he could very well get tired of waiting for devon.

Victoria: Alright. So then we push him in that direction. We find something to distract him, something with a big payoff. We draw his focus away from devon, so maybe he’ll forget about that plan, and then newman will be right there to make the deal.

Jack: Talk to me. What brought this on?

Diane: Thank you. I — I don’t want to ruin our time here together.

Jack: You’re not ruining anything. I could see something was on your mind. I wanted to give you the space to work through it on your own.

Diane: Well, I appreciate that. Jack, it’s been lovely here with you, it’s been peaceful, it’s been really romantic, but something happened today.

Jack: What?

Diane: Well, while you were out, a strange call came in on the landline, and it has me rattled.

Jack: Who was it? What did they say?

Diane: Well, that’s just it. By the time I answered it, no one was there. I can’t stop thinking it was jeremy.

Jack: There’s no way stark would know we are here.

Diane: Yeah, but what if he found us and he’s heard my voice and he’s on his way here? Or — or worse yet, what if he’s using our family as some sort of leverage?

Jack: Okay, you are letting your fear and imagination run wild. Wrong numbers, bad connections, hang-ups — that happens all the time.

Diane: I realize that. But there’s a possibility that jeremy got some information and pieced it together. The first thing he’d do is to call to see if I’d answer.

Jack: That’s a pretty long shot, diane.

Diane: Well, maybe, maybe not. But if he knows we’re here, then he knows that we’re not home to protect our family. Jack, we have left our family just sitting in the cross hairs.

Kyle: Did phyllis say something specific about going after my mom?

Summer: Nothing specific, no, but she seemed really interested in diane and jack.

Kyle: How so?

Summer: [ Sighs ] Well, it started with her saying that she bought a present for harrison.

Kyle: Okay. Nothing wrong with that. Unless she’s trying to find her way in through an innocent child.

Summer: Exactly. So she said she wanted to bring the gift by the house, but that jack and diane wouldn’t want to see her there. And then she asked all of these questions like, “are they home? Where are they? How long are they going to be gone for?” All these questions that had nothing to do with harrison and were none of her business.

Kyle: Could that just be phyllis being nosy. That would be in character, wouldn’t it?

Summer: I guess.

Kyle: Isn’t it possible that she’s just digging because she always likes to be in the loop?

Summer: It’s possible, but, kyle, we need to be vigilant. We’re in a dangerous situation with stark, and my mom is acting suspicious. I don’t know. Just something doesn’t sit right with me.

Phyllis: Oh, good. There you are.

Summer: Mom, it’s really not a good time.

Phyllis: It’s very, very important.

Summer: We’re not going to tell you where jack and diane are, so please just stop trying.

Phyllis: Listen, listen, i know you don’t want to talk to me. You don’t want to be seen with me. I get it. I get it. But I wouldn’t be trying to track you down if it wasn’t completely necessary.

Summer: What’s completely necessary that you need to talk to us about?

Phyllis: It’s about jeremy stark. He’s on his way right now to paris to find jack and diane, and this time — this time, he thinks he will absolutely find them.

Summer: What?

Kyle: But how is it you know this? (Vo) red lobster’s finer points of fun dining:

Phyllis: Listen, um, I don’t blame you for asking me that. I don’t blame you at all. I’m going to be 100% honest with you two. Okay? Really. Ever since jeremy stark got into town, he has been hounding me. I mean, almost obsessed with me, asking me to team up with him to exact revenge on diane.

Summer: Are you serious?

Phyllis: Yes. Yes. 100% serious. I flat out told him no, but it’s the truth.

Kyle: Why are we just finding out about this now?

Phyllis: Well, I didn’t think you’d believe me if I told you that. See? I didn’t think you’d believe me, or you’d think that I was painting myself out to be a saint. I mean, it was lose/lose for me.

Summer: What about now? What’s changed?

Phyllis: Well, this is a very, very real threat. Guys, jeremy stark isn’t just talking about revenge on diane. He’s not just talking about hurting them. He’s actually flying to europe to find them. He is dangerous. If you don’t know that for yourself, at least know it for jack and diane.

Kyle: Excuse me. I need to go make a phone call. Damn it. I forgot my phone again.

Phyllis: Looking for this?

Kyle: Right. Thanks.

Elena: I don’t want to fight with you about this. I probably shouldn’t have even agreed to meet with you for drinks tonight. I’m sorry.

Nate: No, no. No need for apologies.

Elena: It’s just, after we fought so hard to get back to a good place, the last thing I want to do is create tension between us again. We cannot go back to that horrible dark space we were in.

Nate: I promise you, we are not going back there.

Elena: I don’t know. Maybe I’m just looking for trouble where it doesn’t exist.

Nate: I understand. Trust me.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] It’s not like you and victoria are having an affair.

Nate: Exactly. Look, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to my professional relationships. I’m all yours. I love you. And only you. And, look, if you ever feel too tired to go out again after work, all you have to do is just say so, okay? We can just go home, spend time together, just us.

Elena: That is exactly where I want to be, cuddled up in bed with you.

Nate: Come here.

[ Sighs ] Let’s get you home.

Victoria: Thank you. Okay, good night.

Audra: You know, I really admire you. Your laser-like focus on achieving your goals is inspiring. You decide you want mccall unlimited, and nothing will stand in your way. And, you know, despite how much you obviously value your own family, you don’t hesitate to get in the middle of other families. You know, like when you worked with nate to acquire chancellor-winters.

Victoria: That was strictly a business proposition.

Audra: Yeah, but you understand that people are responsible for their own choices. You focus on newman’s bottom line and not on nate ruining his relationship with his cousins. And now you’re not at all afraid of getting between a father and son.

Victoria: You know, unlike the people that you just named, the newman family has always been united. Even when we’re fighting and struggling to see eye-to-eye, our allegiances are very clearly defined and unquestionable.

Audra: I suppose few families can claim that.

Victoria: And if one family member can be swayed in a particular direction, they’re the weak link, and the person doing the swaying, they’re not the issue, right? Because everybody has to be pulling together in the same direction, working for the same goal on the same page, or else everything falls apart.

Audra: So, just to be clear, we’re talking about swaying tucker away from devon, right?

Jack: Diane, your family is fine. The security team is on full-time duty and maximum alert.

Diane: You say that, but is it enough?

Jack: Your family is safe. Okay, try to remember why we came here in the first place, to give ourselves some time to think clearly, not to avoid physical threat. We needed to remove ourselves from jeremy’s psychological warfare. But it seems that being this far away from our family has created its own problems.

Diane: Yes, because I don’t feel any safer, jack, or any less agitated.

Jack: I know that. I understand. We played right into jeremy stark’s hands. We inflicted this on ourselves.

Diane: Maybe we should just go home. That way, we can lay eyes on the people that matter most to us instead of relying on some security agency.

Jack: You know if I felt for one moment anyone was not safe, I would be home in a flash.

Diane: Jack, please.

Jack: But if it gives you peace of mind —

[ Cellphone ringing ] It’s kyle. When cold symptoms keep you up,

Victoria: Of course we’re talking about devon and tucker. My plan is to get them each on separate paths. What exactly did you think I meant?

Audra: Oh, I wasn’t sure.

Victoria: We’re discussing a specific business strategy, audra. So if you’re reading something into this, then —

Audra: I-I don’t know what i would read into. What you said was perfectly clear. If two people in any kind of relationship get split apart by a third person, it’s not the third person’s fault. It just wasn’t meant to be.

Victoria: That’s exactly what I meant. And that’s what we’re going to do to devon and tucker.

Audra: I’ll let nate know you stopped by.

Jack: I did not see that coming. Thanks, kyle. Yeah, I love you, too, son. Talk soon.

Diane: Is everything okay? Has — has jeremy made threats? Is harrison safe?

Jack: No, everything’s fine. Kyle just called with some interesting information. Apparently, stark left town for europe in hot pursuit of us.

Diane: What? Why? I — I don’t believe that.

Jack: Uh-huh, I didn’t believe it, either, except kyle called his friend at the airport and verified stark did indeed charter a flight to paris. It left earlier today.

Diane: So he’s gone?

Jack: Well, let’s not throw caution to the wind. I mean, why would he think we were in paris? This could all be a trick, very much like the one we pulled on him earlier.

Diane: Exactly. And it’s just like jeremy to pull something like that.

Jack: Listen, you were — you were talking about how you wanted to come out of hiding and go home. Maybe it’s time we do that — cautiously.

Diane: Thank you. Oh. What do we do about this? Do we tell people about our engagement?

Jack: Absolutely.

Diane: Really? Who? Who do we tell?

Jack: The whole world, my love. The whole world.

Diane: Okay.

[ Chuckles ]

Summer: I really hope what you’re saying about stark is true.

Phyllis: It is. I have no reason to lie. I mean, despite what you might think, I don’t want to see diane and jack hurt, okay? I have my priorities straight.

Summer: What are they?

Phyllis: You, summer. My priority is you. It always has been you. It absolutely kills me that you can’t see that.

Summer: Sorry. It’s a little hard to have any sympathy for you, mom, because you’ve given me so many reasons to not put any faith in what you say.

Phyllis: Okay.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Okay. Trust me, I’m working very, very hard to change this.

Summer: I really hope that everything that you’re saying is true. ‘Cause I want to believe in you. I-I do miss you.

Phyllis: I miss you, too.

Summer: But if missing you is the price I have to pay to not be disappointed by you again, so be it.

Victoria: Oh. Elena, I’m really surprised to see you here. Well, last I heard, you and nate were going to be enjoying a couple’s night out.

Elena: Yeah, that was the plan, but after a long day at the hospital, I needed some rest, and then I decided i needed some of sharon’s tea. So here I am. I wouldn’t be surprised if nate snuck off to the office.

Victoria: Oh, yes, that sounds like nate.

[ Chuckles ] Oh, please, put your drink on my tab.

Elena: Oh, thanks, but that’s not necessary.

Victoria: No, I insist. I mean, really, it’s an apology for all of the late nights that I have kept nate at the office.

Elena: So how is he doing at newman?

Victoria: He couldn’t be better. I mean, working with him is like a total dream. He’s collaborative, creative, respectful. He’s very strong and determined. You know, working together with him is really perfect because we’re — we’re very in tune.

Elena: That is quite an endorsement.

Victoria: Maybe that’s why none of the other newman media ceos have worked out, because maybe — maybe this job was meant for nate.

Elena: Maybe.

Victoria: You know, honestly, I think that if he keeps this up and if he sticks with me, I can see even bigger and better things in his future.

Elena: Hm. Cleaning is the worst.

Kyle: Hey.

Summer: Were you able to reach jack?

Kyle: I was. I also checked to see if stark chartered a flight to paris. He did. Left not too long ago.

Summer: So my mom was telling the truth?

Kyle: It appears that way. I think my parents are going to come back to genoa city. What? Are you still unsure about the whole thing?

Summer: I don’t know. I mean, my mom had your phone. It’s suspicious.

Kyle: Yeah, I’m always forgetting my phone, leaving it places. Besides, I don’t know what she could get from it. It’s password-protected.

Summer: I know. It’s just… why would jeremy think your parents were in paris, anyway? What evidence does he have for that? And he was so sure about it that he chartered a plane to go over there and look for them? Something’s just not adding up for me. Kyle…. [ Sighs ] What if my mom didn’t have a change of heart at all and she actually is working with jeremy stark?

Kyle: Thought did cross my mind.

Summer: That means that your parents could be walking right into a trap set by my mom. Should they be even heading back right now?

Kyle: Look, I get your concern. But dad said they were planning on returning even before my call. Stark leaving town is just an added bonus. With or without him flying off to paris, they were coming home. But rest assured, no one is letting down their guard.

Nate: Audra, what is going on with you? Tell me, where is it written in your list of duties as my coo that you get to meddle in my personal affairs?

Audra: What are you talking about?

Nate: I just saw elena, and it sounds like you’ve been filling her head with all kinds of nonsense.

Audra: About what?

Nate: About my business relationship with victoria.

Audra: [ Sighs ]

Nate: She and I have established a strong rapport, completely professional. Why would you try to turn that into something it’s not?

Audra: I did nothing of the kind.

Nate: Listen, I have finally found a workplace that nurtures growth and encourages new ideas and forward thinking. I hired you because I thought that was something that you and I had.

Audra: We do. And I truly appreciate it. Look, I apologize if anything i said to elena may have led to a misunderstanding.

Nate: Right, a misunderstanding.

Audra: Yes. Really. Elena asked how things were going at the office, and I gave her a glowing report about how the energy here is extremely collaborative and close, mostly in part thanks to you. Okay, I told her how I often feel very in sync with my boss, you, and how you often feel very in sync with your boss, victoria. I was just trying to describe the inclusive vibe around the office.

Nate: Mm-hmm. And that’s all you said?

Audra: What else is there for me to say? Look, I never meant to imply that anyone had anything more than a strictly professional relationship around here. Do you need me to call elena and try to rectify my mistake?

Victoria: You know, you really must be so proud of nate and all that he’s accomplished.

Elena: Yeah, of course I am. I think he’s brilliant.

Victoria: Well, then it’s no surprise to you how, uh, there is no stopping him once he’s set his mind to something. That’s when he really excels. I remember from personal experience what an amazing doctor he was, but now it’s — it’s impressive to see how quickly he’s pivoted into being an incredible businessman.

Elena: Yeah, he’s very talented.

Victoria: I can’t imagine anyone knowing him that would expect anything less. Anyway, it was nice running into you.

Elena: Yeah, you, too.

Victoria: Have a good evening.

Elena: Bye.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Elena: [ Clears throat ]

Nate: Hey. Oh, thank you. I, uh — I thought you were headed home.

Elena: Yeah, that was the plan, but I felt horrible about overreacting and questioning you earlier, and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep unless I apologized.

Nate: Like I said, I totally understand.

Elena: I don’t think you do. Nate, I am so scared that we are going to fall back into this contentious pattern that almost ended our relationship.

Nate: That is not going to happen. I am truly happy here at newman. I feel valued here. Look, the last time we had trouble, I was at chancellor-winters. You know that was a whole different kind of beast.

Elena: But work is work, no matter how much you enjoy it, and I don’t want you to overlook the fact that every job is going to be demanding and difficult at some point, even in the best environments.

Nate: Okay, you want me to quit?

Elena: No, not at all. Nate, I support you, I’m proud of you, and I want to be by your side, supporting you as you succeed.

Nate: It means a lot.

Elena: But I also see you sinking a little deeper every day, and that’s what worries me. We almost broke up because of the pressure of working in the business world. It was like it was changing you.

Nate: But I didn’t change. And besides, what would you have me do?

Elena: [ Sighs ] I love seeing you this happy. It makes me happy. But I also can’t forget how close I was to losing you. So what happens when things get difficult and human? Am I going to lose you forever?

Jack: Awful lot of luggage for what ended up being a very short trip. Hey, you seemed awfully quiet on the drive back.

Diane: Hm.

Jack: You wanted to come home. Are you having second thoughts? I consider it my job now to make sure you are safe and secure wherever you lay your head.

Diane: I haven’t given jeremy much thought since kyle said he was gone. No, actually, I have been thinking of the news about our engagement.

Jack: Oh, that’s so much more pleasant.

Diane: Yeah, and I appreciate you wanting to tell the world that we’re in love and getting married, and I-I feel the same way. But, you know, we need to be practical and sensitive right now. We need to make sure kyle’s okay with this.

Jack: Well, agreed, but we have to tell him.

Diane: Yes, but it might take him some time to come to grips with the idea.

Jack: Oh, I think he’ll come around a lot quicker than you think. He knows we’re in love.

Diane: I know, but just because this feels so right to us doesn’t mean he’s going to feel the same way. You know, we can’t — we can’t force him into accepting that we’re getting married.

Jack: I think he’ll embrace it pretty quickly, and when he does, we will tell the rest of the world. We will shout it from the rooftops!

Diane: [ Laughs ] You know, we’re guaranteed to face some criticism.

Jack: We can’t worry about those people. We need to stay focused on us and our happiness.

Diane: Yeah, I wish I could put all of those people out of my mind, but the reality is, this news is going to be troubling to some people, and I would hate for anybody to get upset over something that gives us so much joy.

Jack: I appreciate your compassion, and I agree with you. So here’s what I suggest. We tell immediate family now, and we tell our friends and extended family later on.

Diane: Okay. Thank you for understanding. And we can scandalize the rest of genoa city later.

[ Chuckles ] Oh.

Jack: What?

Diane: I guess I’m going to have to wait to show off my gorgeous ring.

Phyllis: It’s done.

Jeremy: They know?

Phyllis: Kyle and summer think that you left town.

Jeremy: You think they bought it?

Phyllis: I think summer has her doubts, but kyle, he left immediately. Probably to summon his dad back into town.

Jeremy: Good. Bringing you on board seems to be one of my more brilliant ideas after all.

Phyllis: It was your most brilliant idea. Alright, mastermind, what’s next? Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Jeremy: I suspect the next steps will be the hardest for you.

Phyllis: I’ll decide what’s hard for me.

Jeremy: It may involve you getting back into the abbotts’ good graces.

Phyllis: I’m not doing that.

Jeremy: We need access to diane’s personal property. That means you need to get back into jack’s house.

Phyllis: Listen, I’ve tried to make nice with diane. It didn’t work.

Jeremy: This is where I can do anything, phyllis. Confidence comes in. Now, if you don’t think you can do it, I’ll just get one of my associates to do a quick “b” and “E.”

Phyllis: No. You’re not going to have some random burglar hit up the abbott house. I told you, I’m protecting my family. What is it? I’ll do anything. What do I need to do?

Jeremy: That’s what I like to hear. We need one or two small items that belong to diane, things specific and personal to her. There needs to be no mistaking who they belong to.

Kyle: Mom, dad, glad you’re home.

Summer: Yeah, welcome back.

Jack: Yeah, we missed you. Not that we were gone that long. Thank you very much for the heads-up on stark’s departure.

Diane: Yes, and if it’s true and if he’s really gone, then that’s good news.

Kyle: If it is true, it will most likely be temporary. Stark isn’t a stupid man, and he’ll realize he’s on a wild goose chase and eventually come back here.

Jack: Well, at very least, it will buy us some time to decide what to do next as a family.

Diane: And speaking of family, we have something else we need to discuss with you. It’s urgent.

Summer: What is it?

Diane: No, no, no, it’s nothing wrong. Actually, it’s quite wonderful.

Jack: I proposed to diane, and, lucky me, she accepted.

Nate: Come here. Stop worrying, okay? You will never lose me. I love you. Yes, I lost my way for a little while there, but now I am here, okay? The man you love is back. And, yes, I’ve been working hard, but I’ve been doing that for us, for our future together.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Sorry. I need to take this. Hey, victoria.

Victoria: Then I ran into elena at crimson lights, and she said that she was going home to get some sleep. So I assume that means maybe you have time to meet for a drink. Um, there are some aspects of the mccall acquisition that I’d love to discuss with you.

Nate: I’m sorry, victoria, but elena’s here with me in the office right now, and we were about to head home. Can it wait until the morning?

Chelsea: Yeah?

Billy: It’s like a whole separate world.

Chelsea: Yeah. And each area of concern for our hero is a different style.

Chelsea: Right. Right. So, part of the challenge is balancing the three.

Billy: And that depends on the stage in the life of the hero.

Chelsea: Yep.

Billy: You’re really onto something.

Chelsea: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

[ Laughs ]

[ Knock on door ]

Chloe: Chelsea, are you home?

Chelsea: Oh.

[ Both chuckle ]

[ Clears throat ]

[ Door opens ] Hi! This is a surprise!

Chloe: Hi. Yeah. Sorry for just showing up, but i was in the neighborhood, and i just wanted to check in and see how you were doing.

Chelsea: Yeah. I’m good. Well, come on in.

Chloe: Okay. Thanks.

Billy: Hey, chloe.

Chloe: Hi. Um, look who’s here. I — I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize that you had company. Is this a bad time?

Nikki: I was so happy to get your invitation. We haven’t been able to catch up in a while.

Summer: I know. That’s my fault. Um, things have been really hectic lately.

Nikki: Hectic? What’s bothering you, honey? Or do I already know?

Summer: It’s — it’s dad and the situation with sally.

Nikki: That makes two of us. I don’t understand why he wants to get mixed up with a person whose life is so chaotic. I mean, what does he see in her? Everything else in the rest of his life is great. But leave it to sally spectra to bring on the trouble.

Summer: Especially now, with a baby on the way.

Nikki: Baby? What baby?

Nick: So, I basically laid down the law with summer. I told her she needs to have an open mind about our relationship.

Sally: I hate to cause friction between you and your daughter.

Nick: Ah, don’t worry about it. She and I are crazy close. We’re strong enough to get through it.

Sally: Well, I don’t doubt that. Must be nice to be so strong.

Nick: It is a heavy burden at times.

Sally: Mm-hmm, of course it is.

[ Both chuckle ] I could definitely use some of that strength. I really need to get my life together.

Nick: What do you mean?

Sally: Well, I was just waiting in limbo for so long to, you know, tell adam about the baby. And now that I have, I need to focus on other things in my life, like my career. You know, chloe and I are prepping for a follow-up meeting with jill. Of course, we’re just — you know, it’s more about jill’s schedule right now, unless victor decides to tank us again.

Nick: Don’t you worry about that. I’m planning on using my legendary strength to make sure he stays the hell out of that.

Sally: Well, thank you.

Nick: It would be nice to lock in a contract with chancellor-winters, though.

Sally: Oh, yeah. They would be a huge client. I mean, they have tons of offices and restaurants and hotels, all kinds of properties that could use interior design. And I really actually want to tour some of them so I could start to have an idea about, like, the function, the colors, the textures. That way, chloe and I have specific recommendations we can give to jill and impress her all over again.

Nick: That’s excellent thinking. Where are all these properties? And would you like to use the newman jet to get to them?

Sally: [ Laughs ] Yeah, I’m sure that would go over really big with victoria.

Nick: I’m the coo. I can reserve the jet whenever the hell I want.

Sally: Well, that is very generous of you. I really appreciate the gesture. But no thank you. We are gonna fly commercial.

Nick: Are you sure?

Sally: Yeah. I mean, our research has absolutely nothing to do with newman, so we’re not entitled to the newman perks, and that includes riding on a fancy corporate jet, especially from you. I mean, our… we’re not in that stage of our relationship yet.

Nick: Fair enough.

Adam: Uh, hope I’m not interrupting.

Sally: Uh, adam, we were actually having a private conversation.

Adam: Ah, okay. Well, this will just take a few minutes of your time. Um, I have not been able to stop thinking about the baby, and i have a proposition for you, one that I hope you will seriously consider.

Sally: Well, what exactly are you suggesting?

Adam: Um, look, I just want to make things as easy as I can for you.

Sally: In what sense?

Adam: Look [Sighs] It’s important that you and our child are settled and you’re comfortable from the very beginning, so… I would like to buy you a house.

Sally: A house?

Adam: Yeah. I mean, you weren’t planning on staying in this hotel forever, were you?

Sally: Well, no. I mean, obviously, I would like more room. I just haven’t gotten around to, you know, beginning the process, calling realtors, looking at properties.

Adam: Yeah, yeah, I mean, i understand it’s the beginning stages. Feels like you have all the time in the world, but, you know, time is gonna start flying by before you know it. I mean, doesn’t it make sense to find a house and move in and get ready before the baby arrives? I mean, you could use your design skills to put your own stamp on it.

Sally: [ Sighs ] Adam —

Adam: Please let me do this for you. I know your folks moved around a lot when you were a kid and they never gave you a place to call home. But you and our child — you can have a nursery to read bedtime stories. You can have a yard to play in, a wall with pictures and happy memories. You know, everything that you dreamed of as a child. I want to help make that happen.

Nikki: Sally is pregnant? Oh, my god. I had no idea.

Summer: Yes, sally is having a baby, but it’s not dad’S. It’s adam’S.

Nikki: [ Gasps ] Hallelujah! No. No, no, this is still a mess.

Summer: It’s what she does best.

Nikki: I have seen nicholas almost every day at the office, and he hasn’t said anything. And I’ll bet victor doesn’t know. He would have said something.

Summer: Um, here’s the thing, grandma. I know that it’s a lot to ask, but could you please not tell grandpa about this? At least, until dad or adam gets a chance to tell him.

Nikki: That he’s having another grandchild? I-I don’t know. I mean, for me to know and not tell him…

Summer: I know. I know. I know. It was really unfair for me to dump all of this on you, but i just — I needed to talk to somebody who would be just as horrified as I am, but the thing is, if grandpa confronts dad about this before he’s ready, it’s gonna cause this huge conflict. And nobody wants that, right?

Nikki: Wow. As rationalizations go, that’s — that’s a bit of a stretch, summer. But…alright. For the sake of the baby. It’s not healthy to have stress during pregnancy.

Summer: Thank you.

Nikki: I wish that nicholas would tell victor already, but he’s probably too embarrassed and upset, doesn’t want to talk about it.

Summer: This is the thing, grandma. He’s not wallowing in self-pity. Dad is actually still seeing sally.

Nikki: They’re not breaking up?

Summer: [ Exhales sharply ] I guess this thing with adam was a one-time occasion and sally doesn’t have any desire to get back together with him.

Nikki: Oh, no, sure. Why should she? She can have nicholas.

Summer: I actually think that I’m the most upset about all of this. And I kind of blew up at sally. I told her how selfish I thought she was being and how she’s using my dad. And then dad came over and told me how wrong I was and how this hasn’t changed his feelings for sally at all.

Nikki: Unbelievable. He is too noble for his own good.

Summer: I know, right? It’s like he can’t see what’s going on, and it kills me.

Nikki: Trust me. I know exactly how you feel.

Summer: I wish that this could all work out for dad. I really do but when I play it out in my head, there’s really only one word that could sum it up.

Nikki: “Disaster.” I mean, how can he think that they can stay together when she is having his brother’s child? And I can only imagine what adam thinks about all of this.

[ Sighs ] If only there were a way that nicholas could walk away now, before it gets more complicated.

Summer: Maybe there is.

…I’m over 45.

Nikki: I would dearly love to get nicholas out of this, but i worry that any kind of maneuver would backfire. I mean, in the past, whenever i told him I had issues with the woman in his life, he just digs in his heels. I mean, if he feels so strongly about sally, in spite of this situation, I think it’s gonna be very hard to change his mind.

Summer: I agree. But what if something in their relationship were to drastically change and he realized that it would be better to end it sooner rather than later?

Nikki: Change how?

Summer: Like if sally fell back in love with adam.

Nikki: Okay. And then what?

Summer: Sally was heartbroken when adam dumped her. I mean, that’s the reason why she glommed on to dad in the first place. And we all know that adam’s not over her. So, maybe deep down, she still cares for him, too.

Nikki: I wouldn’t doubt that.

Summer: So, if I could pull this off, it would be sort of a service to two people who belong together.

Nikki: Oh, my god, yes. I mean, that would be ideal. But there are two obstacles that you need to consider.

Summer: What are they?

Nikki: Whatever lingering feelings sally may have for adam, she has decided to keep him at arm’s length. So that tells me that her walls are up pretty high.

Summer: Walls can be climbed. You just have to have the right tools and motivation. What’s the other one?

Nikki: No one is more charming than your father when he is infatuated with someone. So it’s unlikely that adam would be able to win her heart without a lot of help and a whole lot of luck.

Sally: Adam, your offer is very generous, but… I’m — I’m gonna have to say no.

Adam: Well, I’m sorry to hear that.

Nick: This is what she was worried about, you overstepping.

Adam: Uh, no, I was just trying to provide for my child and his or her mother. It’s what any decent person would do.

Sally: Okay, you know what? You actually are both just thinking a little bit too big today, too grandiose, and worse yet, you’re actually thinking for me.

Nick: No, no, no, sally, that’s not —

Sally: No, hey, look, I don’t hold it against you — really. I know you’re both trying to be supportive, and you’re actually being very sweet in your own way, but I would like to make my own decisions about how I travel and where I live and, you know, everything else in my life. In fact, I actually insist on it, so… anyway, if you guys will excuse me, I-I really have work to do.

Chelsea: Lemon?

Chloe: Um, no.

Chelsea: Sugar?

Chloe: I’m good. Though I do appreciate you being such a gracious host when i clearly interrupted something when I showed up.

Chelsea: What are you talking about?

Chloe: The second I walked in, I picked up on a very strong vibe.

Chelsea: A vibe?

Chloe: Yeah. Between you and billy. You were all flushed. You’ve never been a very big blusher.

Chelsea: What? No, that’s — no. Um, billy and I were excited because we were talking about the new video game idea.

Chloe: Oh, yeah. That’s what got you all flustered.

Chelsea: Chloe! It’s true.

Chloe: You can be honest with me. There’s no judgment. Is there something going on with you and billy?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] I honestly don’t know how to define it. And I don’t know if I want to. There are these feelings that have been growing between us. Strong feelings.

[ Sighs ] And I think it’s taken us both by surprise.

Billy: You know what? Make it a double. Gonna live life dangerously.

Sharon: I’ve heard that about you.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] My secret’s out.

Sharon: I noticed that you came from the direction of chelsea’s place. Is she well?

Billy: She is. She’s very well, actually. She’s working on a new project.

Sharon: Oh, really?

Billy: Have you heard of, uh, what daniel romalotti’s putting together?

Sharon: The gaming platform. Yeah, that sounds really intriguing.

Billy: Yeah, it is. She, uh — she pitched him an idea, and he’s looking into developing it.

Sharon: Oh, wow! Well, that sounds wonderful. I’m sure that’ll give her a boost.

Billy: Yeah, definitely. Among other things.

Sharon: Yeah? Like what? The two of you? Having diabetes can raise a lot of questions.

Summer: Thank you for lunch.

Nikki: Oh, you are so welcome.

Sally: Hello.

Nikki: Well, sally. What a coincidence. Summer was just telling me your big news.

Summer: Oh, but don’t worry. My grandma will keep it in the circle of trust.

Nikki: Oh, yes. For the baby’s sake. Frankly, uh, it was not news that I expected.

Sally: Yeah, I’m sure it wasn’T. I was caught off guard myself.

Nikki: Well, I have so many things to say, but I would have no idea where to begin.

Sally: It’s okay. I have a feeling I know what you’re thinking.

Nikki: Good. That saves us both some time. I have to be leaving. Summer, darling, I will see you later.

Summer: Bye, grandma. Thank you again for meeting me.

Nikki: Of course.

Sally: [ Sighs heavily ]

Summer: Are you, um, on your own?

Sally: Uh, no. I’m meeting chloe in a little bit, but I just thought I’d get some work done.

Summer: Well, hey, um, why don’t I stay and you join me?

Sally: [ Sighs ] Why? So you can go on more about what a tramp and a chaotic mess I am?

Summer: So I can apologize.

Billy: You know, just to be clear, I’m not ignoring the advice you gave me earlier about, you know, what could be potentially developing between chelsea and me. I’m on board. Slow and steady, proceed with caution, all of that. And she’s, you know, talking to her therapist throughout this whole time, so she’s on top of it.

Sharon: Well, I’m relieved to hear that because chelsea needs to navigate this very carefully for herself and for your sake, for connor and johnny and katie.

Billy: I agree. We’re not an island. And if — if we take this relationship to the next level, it’s gonna affect the people we love. And most importantly, we’ve got to make sure that the kids are okay with it.

Sharon: You know, I didn’t mean to sound negative.

Billy: No, no, no, no. I appreciate everything you do for us — really. And I respect your professionalism. I know you only want what’s best for us.

Sharon: I really do. And my opinion doesn’t just come from my training. I’ve been in a similar situation myself. After I had my breakdown, I clung to adam. And what we experienced, the things that he did for me — it created a very intense bond between us. That didn’t mean that we were supposed to be together. But for a while there, the emotional lines were very blurred for me and it was hard to let go of him, even though i knew that was what was best for both of us. So, the last thing that I would want to see happen is for chelsea or you to go through that kind of pain.

Chloe: Billy saved your life. And not like “thanks for the help, you’re a life-saver” kind of way. I mean — I mean he actually saved your life. So I can understand why the two of you have developed some feelings for each other.

Chelsea: Yeah. And he’s been there for me every single day since. An incredible source of comfort. But this isn’t just gratitude. He — he makes me hopeful. He makes me excited about the future. And I feel like I can be myself around him, knowing that whatever I say, he understands.

Chloe: Look, I’m really glad that he can be that person for you. I am, but…you know, you and billy were together years ago.

Chelsea: Mm. We were engaged.

Chloe: Yeah, I know, um… but you were both coming off of tragedies. You know, you — you found each other. You found strength in each other. And things ended badly. And if I could be frank, I think it’s because you didn’t love billy with your entire heart and soul.

Chelsea: You’re right. Back then, I thought adam was the love of my life, and i thought I had lost him forever. I wasn’t over him, not by a long shot.

Chloe: So, as incredible as billy has been with you, I have to ask, as your friend — is it really what you think it is? (Vo) oh look! Glorious progresso soup.

Summer: Look, sally, the last time I saw you, I was really upset and I crossed some lines. What I said to you was cruel and wrong and just plain mean. And I’m sorry.

Sally: Thank you.

Summer: Now that I’ve had time to cool down, I’ve realized that I’ve got to just accept that you’re an important part of my dad’s life. And if that’s the case, then i need to find a way for you and i to get along. And, look, I’m not saying that it’s gonna be easy or that we’re gonna be besties anytime soon, but I have no interest in an ongoing battle that’s just gonna hurt all of us.

Sally: Yeah. I mean, I would love to find a way to, you know, make things work. And since you are extending yourself, I will meet you halfway.

Summer: I appreciate that.

Sally: Look, I-I know that this must have been really jarring for you. And I know that you just want to protect your father.

Summer: I can’t help but want to look out for him. And it brings me to a question that I’ve been wondering about, if you don’t mind me asking.

Sally: Go ahead.

Summer: How is adam taking the news?

Sally: I think he’s excited to be a father again.

Summer: Mm. I figured he would be. But what I meant is, um, how is he handling that you and my dad are gonna stay together? I assume he’s not thrilled.

Sally: That’s a safe assumption.

Summer: He probably feels like he should be the one by your side right now?

Sally: Yeah. Yeah, I-I think that’s what he wants.

Summer: The thing about adam is he can be relentless when he wants something.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: Look, I asked you to stay because we obviously need to find a way to navigate this situation.

Nick: Agreed.

Adam: Mm-hmm. You know, it’s like we get on the same page, we start to understand each other, and then we will clash over something and we end up right back where we started.

Nick: Well, it’s not always my fault, adam.

Adam: Okay. Nor is it mine. Look, it’s frustrating for us, but it’s not good for sally. We don’t want to aggravate her in the condition that she’s in. She won’t stand for it.

Nick: Well, I can’t argue with any of that.

Adam: Okay. Well, the reality is I’m gonna be a part of this baby’s life — and sally’s — and you intend to be just as involved. So, you know, where does that leave us?

Nick: We’re just brothers who don’t agree on much…except we both care for this woman. She shouldn’t have to deal with our issues. So, yeah, we need to come up with some common ground.

Adam: And how do you propose we do that?

Nick: I don’t know. But I know we’re both capable. So, if we both make a good-faith effort, we should be able to come up with something.

Nikki: Thank you both for coming.

Michael: Oh, it was no trouble at all, nikki.

Nikki: Um, there’s tea, if you’d like a cup, or if you’d like something else?

Lauren: Oh, no. Tea is wonderful. Thank you.

Nikki: Help yourself.

Lauren: Thanks, darling. Um, I’m assuming that we’re here to get our assignments for the gala.

Michael: Ah!

Nikki: Well, yes, as vice chair, I will be meeting privately with everyone on the planning committee.

Michael: Oh, I’m gonna enjoy being part of this, seeing how it all comes together instead of just showing up the night of in a tux.

Lauren: You see, my darling, how much fun you’d have if you were retired?

Nikki: Well, I have to say, after all the charity work I’ve done over the years, this particular event really has so much meaning.

Lauren: Mm-hmm. Well, it’s our town’s bicentennial celebration. I mean, 200 years since the founding of genoa city.

Michael: Ah. How time flies.

Nikki: Yes, it does. And the gala is gonna be here before we know it.

Michael: Alright, nikki, we’re at your service. Put us to work.

Lauren: Yep. What is it this year? Do you want marketing, pr, ticket sales, silent auction?

Nikki: Well, I thought you might enjoy a change of pace. I was hoping the two of you could work as a team, handling the catering, signing off on the menu, the signature cocktails, directing the chef and the head of the waitstaff.

Lauren: Oh, this sounds like fun.

Nikki: Yeah, I think it will be.

Michael: I will happily taste every dish, including dessert.

Lauren: And thank goodness i have a staff of tailors who will be taking out his pants afterwards.

Nikki: Ah, good idea. Well, we have been working on quite the guest list.

Lauren: Oh, I don’t think i told you. It’s a masked ball.

Michael: Oh! Elegant mask, formal attire, that kind of look?

Nikki: Exactly.

Lauren: Yes.

Michael: Alright.

Lauren: Oh, my goodness. Do you remember that costume ball we did?

Nikki: Ah!

Lauren: I mean, how many years ago was that?

Nikki: Oh, it’s been a long time, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

Lauren: And katherine was queen of hearts…

Nikki: Oh, yes.

Lauren: …And rex the mad hatter. And I was marie antoinette.

Michael: Ooh la la. Sounds very lavish.

Lauren: Like you wouldn’t believe.

Michael: Who else was there?

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Uh, christine was the blond bombshell.

Nikki: Ohh, yes.

Lauren: And jack, you know, prince charming. Hello? Hello?

Michael: Of course. Of course he was. And victor was…?

Lauren: Roman conqueror.

Nikki: Absolutely.

Michael: Very apropos.

Lauren: Oh, ashley abbott was a stunning scheherazade, and jill made quite a spectacle, arriving as cleopatra with two half-naked, very hot men who proceeded to fan her all night with very large ostrich feathers.

Nikki: I remember. Just know that this year’s event will be more toned down.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: Aw.

Lauren: Just a little. Just a little. Just a tad.

Nikki: So, michael, while i have you here, I’d love to hear your take on tucker mccall. What’s happening with him and his company?

Michael: Ahh. We were having so much fun reminiscing and party planning.

Nikki: Yes, we were. But now I have some questions about him and his business. So, I’m looking to you for some answers. Hi, I’m jason and I’ve lost 202 pounds on golo.

Sally: Well, all things considered, adam is handling the situation pretty well. You know, he knows we’ll be parents together and that’s it, and pushing for more would alienate me, which would make it difficult to function in our child’s best interest. And neither of us want to be those parents. So, the short answer is, yeah, adam is behaving himself.

Summer: Good. I’m glad to hear that his priorities are in order. But still, it’s got to be hard for you.

Sally: You know, I just have to say that your interest and concern is very different than it was the other day.

Summer: Like I said, i just —

Sally: Yeah, you’re protective of nick. Totally makes sense. But still, it’s just really abrupt. I can’t help wondering if there’s more to your sudden change of heart.

Adam: Boy, I never would have thought that this would be the thing that would force us to be more harmonious.

Nick: Well, this is where we are, adam.

Adam: We have more in common than either one of us is willing to admit. I mean, just the fact that victor is our father, for one. There’s few people on the planet that can appreciate the complexities that go along with that.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Well, that’s true. The way you’ve been talking lately, it makes it seem like you see him in a more positive light.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Uh, it’s taken some time. But, yeah, I think I’m coming around to the idea that he knows me better than I thought. And he might actually want to do right by me. I imagine you’re up to date on newman’s plan to acquire mccall unlimited? And you know if that happens that victor is gonna keep it a separate entity and put me in charge?

Nick: Yeah, I just didn’t know if he had talked to you about it yet.

Adam: Well, assuming that happens and everything goes through, are you okay with that? Or is that gonna be something else that we have to overcome?

Nikki: I want to know whatever you know about victor’s plans to get a hold of mccall. I assume you know about this. At this point, it’s not confidential.

Lauren: Right. I’m up to speed.

Michael: No, I have no updates for you, nikki. There’s been no movement on that front. Tucker has still not agreed to sell to newman.

Nikki: So, it’s not imminent.

Lauren: You don’t want this acquisition to happen?

Nikki: Oh, no, I’m fine with the acquisition. It’s what might happen afterward that I am concerned about. Victor has this plan. He wants to put adam in charge, have him report only to victor, bypassing victoria. I mean, she wants to dismantle his company and fold it into the flagship.

Lauren: Oh. That sounds very tense.

Nikki: Yeah, well, things are volatile enough between adam, victoria, and nicholas on a good day.

Lauren: Say no more.

Nikki: Yeah. Our family has enough to deal with right now. I don’t want to add any more tension. Ugh. Victor and his plans.

Michael: Have you spoken to victor about this?

Nikki: I have voiced my thoughts about adam, to no avail. That’s why I would like you to help me in stopping this.

Chloe: I hope I didn’t upset you. I just — [ Sighs ] You have made such incredible progress. I would hate to see anything derail that.

Chelsea: You didn’t upset me, chloe. You’re being a good friend. You’re asking all the right questions. Trust me — I’ve asked myself the same ones.

Chloe: Okay, good.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Whatever’s going on between billy and me, it’s both exhilarating and terrifying — because I don’t want to mess this up.

Chloe: That’s understandable.

Chelsea: I mean, am I ready for more than friendship? Should I be? I don’t know. I just know that this connection I have with him feels new and different than anything I’ve felt for anybody. And, yes, different than what i felt for billy before.

Chloe: And I’m so glad to hear it.

Chelsea: I’m drawn to him, chloe.

[ Sighs ] It’s a pull that’s hard to ignore..and hard not to act on.

Billy: Thank you for opening up about your past like that. I appreciate it. And I know that was heartfelt. And it’s a good reminder to keep my wits about me, you know where chelsea is concerned.

Nick: Mm-hmm. If you remain autonomous, i believe it will keep conflict to a minimum.

Adam: Look, once again, we’re on the same page. Uh, unfortunately, victoria is not as open to that concept as you are.

Nick: Have you talked to her about it?

Adam: No. I asked dad what her response was, and he said that, uh, he’ll take care of it, which tells me she’s definitely not on board.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] You’re surprised by that?

Adam: No. Just trying to find out how big of a fight I have on my hands.

Nick: Have you ever known vick to back down from a fight? Sure, adam, dad’s got grand plans for you. But vick’s your ultimate roadblock.

Summer: Sally, I’m trying to be a better person here.

Sally: So, you just had this epiphany and decided to embrace it?

Summer: I needed a little push. My dad and I had a long talk, and… growing up, he wasn’t ever the kind of dad that would yell, but when he was upset with me, he would give me this look and i would know that he was disappointed. And I hated that look. And he brought it out, and… it just made me see things from another perspective.

Sally: So, you’re trying to get along with me to not disappoint your father?

Summer: Yeah.

Sally: I can appreciate that.

Summer: Look, while we’re putting all of our cards on the table, I still have reservations about you and my dad.

Sally: ‘Cause you think I’m not good enough for him.

Summer: No. Because I always thought that you and adam are a better match.

Sally: Why? Because you think so little of both of us?

Summer: [ Chuckles ] I mean, maybe in the past i thought that, but even then, i could see how good you two were together. It was like you inspired each other to be your best selves, and, honestly, it made you both a little easier to take. You got into a lot less trouble together than you did apart. And — I don’t know — something about the relationship just seemed to work.

Sally: And you don’t get that same vibe between me and your father?

Summer: I’m not saying that. All I care about is that my dad is happy, and if you can be the woman that does that, fantastic. But I’m not gonna lie to you, sally. The adam factor bothers me. It just feels like you two aren’t done with each other yet. And it’s not just that you seemed good together in the past. It’s that you’re pregnant with his baby and you two were together once and all of these months? What are the odds of that? It’s like the universe is trying to say something. It’s as though you two are… meant to be.

Chelsea: Summer, hey. How are you?

Summer: I’m good. God, I feel like I haven’t seen you in ages.

Chelsea: Yeah, I — I didn’t get out much for a while, crimson lights being the exception.

Summer: And the last time i did see you, I think I was, um, offering you a job at marchetti, and you turned me down flat.

Chelsea: Well, not — not you. It just wasn’t a right job for me.

Summer: I heard that you were taking some time off for some personal stuff. How — how’s that going?

Chelsea: Um, yeah, it’s been a challenge. Um, I went through a really rough patch in the fall. But the worst is behind me, and I’ve come out the other side stronger than ever.

Summer: Oh, that’s really good to hear. But, uh, you still don’t want to come work for me at marchetti?

Chelsea: No.

[ Laughs ] Um, but I am working on something new.

Billy: Hey, ash.

Ashley: Hi.

Billy: Are you alone?

Ashley: I am.

Billy: Okay. Well, I was gonna sit at the bar to work through my 10,000 thoughts going through my head, but I could use the company. Do you mind?

Ashley: Sit down. No, not at all.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Ashley: What’s going on with you?

Billy: Oh, uh… that’s a good question, actually. We haven’t been able to catch up since you got back from paris.

Ashley: Yeah.

Billy: Why did you come back so quickly? I figured you’d be there for a few months, you know, with the opportunity to work out of the paris office.

Ashley: Right. I know. Good question. But abby’s here, and she’s going through a lot. I got my grandson — dom. So, there’s that.

Billy: Ah. I see.

Ashley: You see what? What do you see?

Billy: [ Sighs ] I mean, I heard rumors that since you’ve been back, you’ve been in contact with tucker.

Ashley: So?

Billy: I mean, what’s going on there? Are you playing an angle?

Ashley: Why would I have to be playing an angle?

Billy: Because he’s tucker mccall and there’s no other reason to interact with him.

Devon: Hi.

Tucker: Hi.

Devon: Thanks for getting here so quickly.

Tucker: Sure. I was anxious to hear what you had to say. And I know that it’s not easy for you to reach out to me.

Devon: Well, just so we’re clear, this is strictly a business discussion.

Tucker: Yeah. Fine. No father/son emotional crap.

Devon: Yeah, something like that.

Tucker: So, does this mean you’re starting to see the value in taking over mccall?

Devon: I’ve definitely been giving it a look over.

Tucker: Okay. That’s a good start.

Devon: Well, actually, i found out that you took the idea of selling your company to newman enterprises first. So the notion that this is all about me and carrying on your legacy is clearly a lie, right?

Billy: Look, tucker mccall is bad news, okay? You know that. Everyone knows that. And I really don’t like the idea of you being sucked back into his orbit. He’s caused you a lot of pain.

Billy: No, on the contrary, i think you are the smartest person I know. But when it comes to matters of the heart, all the intelligence gets thrown out the window.

Billy: I did. I did say something of the sort.

Ashley: But you don’t think tucker deserves the same thing.

Billy: You know why.

Ashley: No, I don’t know why.

Billy: He’s one of those guys that’s not ever going to change.

Ashley: Billy, you’re one of those guys that’s not ever going to change, and yet you constantly ask for support every time you think it’s time for you now to start, you know, cleaning up your act.

Billy: Okay, yes, I have done that many, many times. And I appreciate it every single time. But the difference is, when I am going to redeem myself or trying to change, I actually mean it. It’s not part of some elaborate scam.

Ashley: Well, I actually think that people who try to change are sincere. Whether or not they accomplish it is, of course, a different deal.

Billy: So, you think that it’s possible for tucker to change? Because — let me just be clear — I don’T. I really don’T. I think that he is perfectly fine being an agent of chaos.

Ashley: I don’t think you’re in a position to judge him, let alone be his jury and executioner.

Billy: Wow, you really are defending the guy, aren’t you?

Ashley: Actually, I’m just not cynical like you.

Billy: You have feelings for him again, don’t you? Have you not learned anything?

Summer: So, are you designing again? If so, I would love to see your sketches. You know how much I respect your work.

Chelsea: Thank you. But, no, actually, I’m trying something new.

Summer: Ooh. Exciting. What are you doing? Can you give me a little hint?

Chelsea: I — it’s kind of hard to explain. I can’t really tell you right now, but, um, it doesn’t have to do with fashion. It’s something that’s very personal to me.

Summer: Hmm. Okay. Well, I look forward to hearing more about it when you’re ready.

Chelsea: Yeah. Well, I want to share it with you when it’s worthy. Uh, but for now, I’m just hoping that this caffeine kicks in so i can get past this creative stumbling block I’m going through.

Summer: Does that usually work for you?

Chelsea: Mm… ahh! Sometimes.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: But really, I think it’s just that my — my personal life is impinging on my work.

Summer: Oh, I know a little something about that. I don’t think that a day goes by that there’s not some sort of family drama at jabot.

Chelsea: Mm. Well, that makes sense. I mean, your mom works with you.

Summer: Actually, um, she doesn’t anymore. I had to fire her.

Chelsea: You fired phyllis?

Summer: Well, believe me, I had cause. And honestly, the work environment has improved greatly, but my family life has definitely taken a toll and… I don’t know. It’s been — it’s been really hard. I sort of had to learn how to compartmentalize.

Chelsea: Trust me, I’ve done a lot of that. But I have realized that pushing things aside doesn’t always lead to healthy results, so just be careful.

Summer: I will. Thank you. And, um, good luck to you on your new path. I’m really excited for you.

Chelsea: I appreciate that. I’ll see you around.

Summer: Bye.

Chelsea: Bye.

[ Cellphone buzzes ]

Summer: This is summer. Wait, is there a reason why communications hasn’t handled that already? Right. Diane’s away. No, no, no, yeah. I’m just gonna get a refill, and I will be back to the office very soon.

Tucker: Well, I’d taken on a lot of debt, and so newman was prepared to buy that debt to force me to sell it to them. It’s really that simple.

Devon: Mm.

Tucker: But I would never ask you to take on a debt-ridden, uh, failing organization.

Devon: Okay. So, what’s changed?

Tucker: Um… [ Chuckles ] A benefactor came in and consolidated the debt before victoria had a chance to make her play. So now the company is in a much better spot. And you can buy it for pennies on the dollar.

Devon: Is that ’cause that’s all it’s worth? ‘Cause I honestly am getting the feeling that this is just your way of trying to dump a failing company onto the nearest sucker, who just happens to be me.

Tucker: [ Sighs ] Devon… this company is all I have had in my life for a very long time. Every thought I had, every ounce of effort I put forth was an attempt to make it something special. And even now, as it’s faltering, it’s not something I would ever just dump on someone. I’m — I’m really — I’m sorry to hear you say that ’cause that is not my intention, honestly. So, I’m gonna go.

Devon: You don’t have to go. You don’t have to go. ‘Cause if you’re telling the truth, I’m still interested in buying it. Taking over your company is an enticing offer. That’s it, I’m going on a dunkin’ run.

Phyllis: Ha! You’re right. Well, I’m glad you got back to me so soon. I really appreciate that. Right. Definitely. Let’s talk next week. You too. Ah, just crazy running into you here.

Summer: Is it crazy? ‘Cause I usually come here a couple of times a day.

Phyllis: Oh. Oh. Well, I’m glad you’re doing that. Good for you. You’re very hard-working. I’m glad you’re finding that life/work balance.

Summer: Yeah, I have a pretty good handle on that.

Phyllis: Mm. Good for you. Good for you. I’m sure it’s hard to find time with your busy schedule for harrison and kyle.

Summer: Not really. They’re the most important parts of my life.

Ashley: You know, I am just not interested in discussing my romantic entanglements with you.

Billy: Oh, my g– even hearing you say “romantic entanglements” makes me…

Ashley: Get over it.

Billy: Okay, fine. If you’re not gonna take any brotherly concern from me, what about jack?

Ashley: [ Laughs ] That’s funny.

Billy: I mean, he’s got to really not love this entanglement that you —

Ashley: Jack doesn’t have any credibility.

Billy: Why?

Ashley: Well, obviously because of his relationship with diane. I mean, he moved her in. And I never thought of a house as big as ours could feel crowded, but indeed it does.

Billy: Well, I mean, you could always move out.

Ashley: It’s the family home, which means it’s my home, and I’m not going anywhere. Thank you very much. Have you given jack any kind of grief at all for going back with diane, somebody who faked her own death?

Billy: I have decided to let jack make his own decisions. Who am I to judge?

Ashley: You are such an ass. You know that? You’re an ass.

Billy: I know. I know.

Ashley: So, you give jack a pass, but you have no problem judging me.

Billy: Ashley, you’re my sister, okay? It’s a different situation.

Ashley: Whoa! Spoken like a true chauvinist, billy. Are you aware that diane has specifically and repeatedly caused me harm? Now, granted, tucker is an egotist and he takes himself way too seriously, but your double standard is disgusting and egregious.

Billy: Okay. Maybe you have a point.

Ashley: Yeah, maybe I do.

Billy: Look, I know, okay? It’s not fair for me to judge anyone else’s messy affairs.

Ashley: What are you saying? You’re having an affair already?

[ Chuckling ] Really? What?

Billy: No, I’m not.

Ashley: What?

Billy: But, you know, I mean, there is someone that, um… look, I’m trying to be thoughtful and I’m trying to take my time and be conscientious. This, you know…

[ Sighs ]

Ashley: Very novel for you. Gosh, I can’t wait till you go public with your relationship so I can just judge the hell out of it.

Billy: Okay, and — and — and because of that right there, I just want to straight up apologize. I am very sorry if you are offended by this line of questioning.

Ashley: Yeah, you should be sorry.

Billy: Whatever you have going on with that manipulative, scheming megalomaniac… it’s none of my business.

Devon: I mean, the company is a mess.

Tucker: Thank you.

Devon: Yeah. Look, I know you put your heart and soul into it, but it just seems like it’s a big collection of a bunch of unrelated divisions that were either acquired or developed on a whim, without any real forethought.

Tucker: [ Chuckles ] Thanks.

Devon: It’s true.

Tucker: Actually, several times in the last few years, I’ve considered restoring the core divisions and concentrating on them and their strengths, namely music and entertainment.

Devon: Well, that sounds like a great idea. Why don’t you do that?

Tucker: Well, ’cause I’m a — I’m a collector. It’s part of my dna. I just got to have more, more more. I see a shiny object, I just have to have it.

Devon: Mm.

Tucker: It’s one of my many weaknesses.

Devon: Well, I think that you’re right about music and entertainment because that’s where your assets are the strongest and that’s where your staff is the most knowledgeable. And they’ve already made a good reputation in the industry, so it’s good infrastructure.

Tucker: The infrastructure’s good.

[ Chuckles ]

Devon: The only thing that’s a little outdated is your distribution. It’s a little 20th-century.

Tucker: Yeah, except there’s a big demand for old stuff right now — vinyl, cds, even cassettes.

Devon: Yeah, that’s true. I was thinking that you could possibly capitalize on a niche market.

Tucker: Mm-hmm. So, what would you do with the less successful divisions? Just scrap them?

Devon: No, I wouldn’t do that at first. I would — I would want to take a look at what you have and see how the divisions could actually work with each other. Like, you have this random trucking company out of san antonio.

Tucker: Yeah. Did I tell you how I bought that one?

Devon: No.

Tucker: So, one of their drivers cut me off on the interstate, and the truck had one of those bumper stickers, you know, “how is my driving? Call 1-800…”

Devon: Yeah.

Tucker: So I called [Laughs] Bought the company, and fired the driver.

Devon: Okay. Well, we’re not gonna be doing anything like that moving forward.

Tucker: Okay, good. Yeah.

Devon: So, my thought was we can use the trucking company for artists when they go on tours, to haul everything.

Tucker: That’s brilliant.

Devon: Yeah?

Tucker: Seriously. Yeah. That’s brilliant. And you could use the media division to stream those concerts. There you go. There’s more revenue.

Devon: That’s not a bad idea at all. Yeah, I can see how this could work.

Tucker: Absolutely. See? Well, look, we’re working well together already.

Devon: Hmm. Unless you treat dandruff regularly,

Tucker: Honestly, devon, i have faith that you and I can finally find some common ground, and maybe mccall unlimited is the way.

Devon: Well, I don’t know how you figure me buying your company is gonna help with us.

Tucker: Well, you buy the company and hire me to work for you.

Devon: I’m not gonna do that.

Tucker: Why not?

Devon: What do you mean?

Tucker: Well, who knows this company better than me? I mean, look, we’re already on the same page, obviously. So, with your vision and my, um, uh, institutional knowledge, so to speak, we can’t lose.

Devon: No, we can lose.

Tucker: Well, but we’re not gonna lose. Trust me. Hell, I could just be the advisor to the ceo.

Devon: [ Chuckling ] Advisor. Alright, so, let me make sure I’m clear on all this. You are willing to sell me the company that you created and then take a smaller role to try and fix our relationship?

Tucker: Absolutely.

Devon: Hmm.

Phyllis: Okay, well, um, I’ll let you be on your way, so…

Summer: Thanks.

Phyllis: Oh! Hey, summer, I got a gift for harrison.

Summer: Oh. That’s nice of you.

Summer: Yeah. When I saw it in the window, it just screamed harrison. It was so cute. So — I don’t know — maybe i can bring it by or — you know, scratch that. I want to avoid jack and diane, so I’m not gonna bring it by. Maybe I’ll have it delivered or s– wait. They went on a trip, right?

Summer: Um…yeah. I-I don’t think that they’ll be back for a while.

Phyllis: Oh! Oh, it’s an extended vacation.

Summer: No, but you can drop harrison’s gift off anytime, mom.

Phyllis: Okay. Well, that seems fun. Where’d they go? Dubai? Someplace exotic?

Summer: Are you seriously fishing for information right now?

Phyllis: Why would I care about them?

Summer: Yeah, that’s the big question. Why do you care about them?

Phyllis: Ugh.

Summer: I mean, but you seem awfully curious about their whereabouts.

Phyllis: Okay, summer. I couldn’t care less about jack and diane.

Summer: I don’t buy it, mom. And honestly I just wish that you would stop using harrison in your plots for revenge against diane. It’s insulting.

Phyllis: I got a gift for harrison.

Summer: Did you? Really?

[ Scoffs ] Look, I-I don’t know where jack and diane are, but even if i did, I wouldn’t tell you.

Phyllis: Summer —

Summer: No, mom. I’m serious. I don’t want any part of any of your schemes against diane. Just leave her alone already.

Phyllis: Summer.

Ashley: So, it somewhat appears that your love life is on track, I guess. What about your work life? Do you have a job?

Billy: Funny you should ask that, actually. Jack offered me a job. He asked me to come back to jabot.

Ashley: No. Wait, he asked you to come back and you’re considering it? You can’t do that. It’s always been a disaster, billy. I mean, think about this.

Billy: Ashley, look at me. I’m a changed man.

Ashley: [ Laughing ] Oh! So, you think that people are capable of adjusting their behavior and becoming functioning members of society.

Billy: I do believe some people are capable of that.

Ashley: Well, then you must believe that there’s hope for tucker.

Billy: [ Sighs ] Look, maybe — just maybe — tucker could prove me wrong. And then again, maybe I’ll prove jack and you and everyone else who cares about me wrong, too, that I am capable of change. And I have to say, this relationship is unique. It’s really, you know, helped me see things in a different light, put my priorities straight. I don’t want to take things for granted, like family. So, yeah, I want to work with my family at the company that our father built.

Ashley: Sounds like you’re taking the job.

Billy: Jack, it’s me. Give me a call when you get a chance. I want to talk about this proposal.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Jack? Jack? Where are you? I’m steve.

Kyle: Can I come in? I come bearing gifts.

Diane: Oh, of course!

Kyle: I wasn’t sure if there was a superstition about the son of the bride.

Diane: [ Laughs, smooches ] Get in here quick. I wouldn’t put it past your father to be out there in the woods trying to catch a glimpse of me in this dress.

Kyle: Dad is tending to some last-minute details. He said something about releasing a thousand doves at the end of the ceremony. Is that true?

Diane: Oh, it’s — it’s just an idea I had. I had no idea he could make it happen.

[ Laughs ] Gosh, I love that man.

Kyle: I know. You’re glowing, you know?

Diane: I am?

Kyle: I’ve never seen you this happy.

Diane: Good — because I love feeling this way. It’s like a dream come true.

Kyle: Mm. For me, too. My mother and father finally coming together. I can’t tell you how many nights I wished for exactly this. It’s everything I’ve always wanted. It’s like the perfect ending to a fairy tale that got pretty rough when I was young.

Diane: Oh, kyle, I am so sorry.

Kyle: Mom, mom, mom, mom. There’s no need. If it weren’t for that pain, i wouldn’t be experiencing this level of happiness. Today is a gift.

Diane: Yeah.

Kyle: And speaking of gifts…

Kyle: This is from your groom. Dad had me deliver it because you’re so adamant about not seeing him today.

Traci: Nothing is going to spoil this wonderful day. Everything is going to be just perfect. And look at that necklace. It’s lovely.

Diane: Oh, well, thank you.

[ Both laugh ]

Traci: You’re going to make the most beautiful bride. And jack is going to be the handsomest groom. Oh! As a wedding gift, I am going to write a novel about your inspirational romance.

Diane: Really?

Traci: My agent has already sold it in just a three-line pitch. In fact, we also have optioned it to hollywood, and they’re going to make it into a big movie. I’m going to call it “the return of the perfect woman.”

Ashley: Not so fast.

Diane: Ashley, I hope we can set aside our differences today.

Ashley: I have no intention of faking anything today. I have nothing but love in my heart. I woke up and I said to myself, “you know, diane really has changed.” And I’m so sorry. I’ve been so unfair to you. And I apologize for making your life so difficult since you’ve returned to genoa city.

Diane: Yes, group hug! Mwah! You know what? I love jack, but I am going to love being an abbott.

Ashley: And you have taught us so much about what it is to change and be a better person. I love you, diane.

Traci: Oh! It’s time for a toast.

Ashley: Thank you.

Traci: To diane joining the abbott family.

Ashley: And to the most beautiful, beautiful wedding ever.

Traci: Cheers!

Diane: Cheers.

Traci: [ Laughs ] Mm! Look at the time. The horse-drawn carriage is gonna be here any moment to take you down to the lake. We’re gonna let you go ahead and finish getting ready.

Ashley: We’ll see you there.

Diane: Thank you both so much for accepting me into your family. Ashley, could you stay and help me with — this isn’t mine, is it? Is it nikki’s?

[ Pounding on door ]

[ Sighs ] Jack, I’ve told you — no sneak peeks. I’ll see you at the altar.

[ Pounding on door ]

[ Sighs ] You won’t give up, will you? Okay. One quick glance. Like traci said, nothing can ruin this day. It’s our time. Jack?

[ Gasps ]

Diane: [ Gasping ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

[ Knock on door ]

Chelsea: Come on in, billy. It’s open.

Billy: How’d you know it was me?

Chelsea: You have a very distinctive knock.

[ Door closes ]

Billy: Well, thank you for noticing. Been working on it for years. Want to go downstairs and grab a coffee or something?

Chelsea: I actually was just down there, and I’m kind of in a groove here, so I don’t want to stop.

Billy: Oh, yeah. Don’t want to disrupt that.

Chelsea: Never. I was stuck earlier, but now i think I got my groove back.

Billy: Good to see you in the flow.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Yeah. Yesterday, there were a lot of creative ups and downs. You know, I was feeling kind of low. I was feeling like all my ideas were bad, feeling like a failure.

Billy: No, don’t do that. Don’t start thinking about yourself that way.

Chelsea: Well, they’re my feelings. Don’t try to talk me out of them.

Billy: Got it. Yeah. Feel like I’m doing that a lot today — telling other people how to feel.

Chelsea: Well, then, knock it off.

Billy: Work in progress.

Chelsea: So, I was feeling stuck and I went downstairs and I saw something that triggered about 20 ideas. I realized I’ve been thinking about the game in a specific way that’s too limited, when in reality, the world is full of pain and conflict everywhere.

Billy: That sounds ominous. What did you see?

Chelsea: Well, I don’t want to get into specifics, but i just witnessed something that reminded me that there is a lot of pain and conflict and tension among families, amongst people who love each other a lot. They don’t know how to navigate it. And you see this everywhere. I mean, you see it in coffee shops, at the park. You see it at work. The world is full of complicated human interaction.

Billy: Sounds a little overwhelming.

Chelsea: Well, I think it’s an opportunity. You know, I think this game can really be a way for people to figure out how to dissect all sorts of human relationships.

Billy: Hmm. Yeah. No, I see it.

Chelsea: And, I mean, you know, why do video games have to be all about slaying dragons and — and blasting aliens? What if it is that, you know, our players here, um — you know, they have to navigate different personalities and that’s how they go further in the game?

Billy: Okay, but you still get to blast aliens, correct?

Chelsea: Well, of course. You have to have some blasting.

Billy: Yeah.

Chelsea: Yeah. There has to be some action element to it. But I feel like the better the player is at the interpersonal stuff, the easier it is. If they’re not good at the interpersonal stuff, then it’s next to impossible.

Billy: I love it.

Chelsea: Yeah?

Billy: Yes.

Chelsea: I mean, I really owe it all to daniel. I mean, he has this platform, and he’s giving me the tools to help people feel less alone.

Billy: Mm.

Chelsea: I’m really excited about it. I want to change people’s lives. This cough.

[Sfx: Coughs]

Billy: I think it’s great. I really think you’re onto something. And you know what? I’ve played my fair share of video games in the past, you know, with reed and johnny and katie, so I know what I’m talking about.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: I think daniel’s lucky to have you playing in his sandbox. And you’re gonna crush it.

Chelsea: Thank you, billy.

Billy: No, really. I’m inspired. You know, you got me excited about my next endeavor.

Chelsea: Your next endeavor? Are you going back to jabot? Are you gonna accept jack’s offer?

Billy: I haven’t talked to him yet, but I feel like I’ve made my decision. It feels like the right place and the right time. You know, I want to bring fresh, new ideas.

Chelsea: Wow. I mean, you were — you were kind of in a similar spot last year with chancellor.

Billy: Yeah, no, I see it differently. I wasn’t all that excited about chancellor. I mean, really, I was there to support lily. And I did my best, but this just feels different, you know? I really — I really feel like i can make a difference in my family company and show up with my entrepreneurial spirit and energy and, you know, do it the way my dad did.

Chelsea: It’s fun to see you so enthusiastic about something.

Billy: You mean other than you.

Chelsea: [ Laughs ] No, it’s — it’s inspiring that we’re both excited about our futures, that we can take control and create a life with meaning and purpose. And we’re both doing it for the right reasons this time.

Phyllis: Texting summer?

Kyle: No. Something else.

Phyllis: Hmm. Alright, well, that’s good to know, that she didn’t get on the phone and text you immediately after I saw her saying what a monster I am.

Kyle: Well, she’d never say that, phyllis. She might think it, but she wouldn’t say it.

[ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Mm.

Kyle: Okay, I think she just needs some time. I’m confident the two of you will work out your differences.

Phyllis: I’m glad you’re confident. I myself am hopeless.

Kyle: Phyllis, I’d love to stay and talk to you about this — and we should sometime — but I have to get to the office.

Phyllis: Oh, kyle! Your phone!

[ Telephone ringing ]

Diane: Hello? Hello? Jack? Jeremy, is that you?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]
