In Monte Carlo, Sydney is getting dressed when she gets a call from Marlena. Marlena says she’s glad she caught her and glad to hear her voice. Sydney notes that she sounds stressed and asks if everything is okay. Marlena says she’s fine, especially now that she’s hearing her. Marlena mentions Sydney texting her that she was on the Riviera. Sydney confirms that she is in Monte Carlo. Marlena asks what that’s all about. Sydney calls a little work and a little play. Marlena informs her that Belle and Chad are in Italy and she knows Belle would like to catch up with her. Sydney questions why nobody told her they were coming since EJ is there as well. Sydney guesses she’s missing out on all the fun.

Chad and Belle approach the building on the address. Belle starts to worry about no one answering the door and that they are trespassing. Chad then calls out, asking if anyone is there. Someone is watching them on a tablet while having a drink.

Sydney tells Marlena she loves her and promises to visit soon as they hang up.

Philip and Gabi arrive for the poker game. Gabi asks if he’s sure he’s okay. Philip thought he was as he’s been in places like this plenty of times, but he’s never gambled with stakes this high before for him and his family. Philip declares that everything is on the line. Gabi encourages that he’s got this. Philip responds that with her by his side, he’s never felt luckier. Philip and Gabi kiss until Dante Vitali arrives and introduces himself as Sami Brady’s fiancee. Dante recognizes Gabi as the founder of Gabi Chic and comments that her overseas expansion has been quite impressive. Sydney then enters and adds that Gabi is also the mother of her niece as they hug. Dante notes that Sami mentioned how many people in Salem are related. Sydney jokes that it’s low key incestuous and hard to find someone who is not your cousin. Philip mentions being related to Sami in more than one way. Dante brings up that Sydney mentioned Philip not wanting it to be told that he’s there. Philip hopes that won’t be a problem but Dante calls it a big problem because he never keeps secrets from Sami. Gabi says she wouldn’t keep secrets from Sami either and going into a marriage makes openness and honesty essential. Gabi adds that she doesn’t need to know everything Philip is up to, especially if it doesn’t concern her, and them being here doesn’t really concern Sami. Philip declares that when he wins tonight, they can shout it from the rooftops. Dante agrees but warns that Sydney is quite the card shark and won’t show any mercy at the table. Philip suggests they get this party started.

Marlena sits at home and gets emotional as she looks at a photo of her, John, and Belle on her laptop. Julie arrives, excitedly telling Marlena that the novel she ordered finally came in. Julie then sees Marlena is upset and asks if she’s alright.

Belle questions the big building having no staff or security and says they are obviously in Dominic Marino’s house but starts to worry if it could be a trap. Chad offers to go ahead if she wants to bail but Belle says not after coming this far and just feels weird that they are alone. Belle insists someone wanted them to be there while Mr. Marino wasn’t home but the question is why. Chad decides there’s only one way to find out.

The poker game begins as Dante talks about hosting quite a few games in Monte Carlo and his favorites are where he gets to welcome newcomers to the table and play with new people as it makes the game that much more exciting. Dante goes over the rules with himself, Sydney, a man named Otto, and Philip, four rounds of Texas Hold ‘Em and mentions the $5 million buy in.

Julie asks Marlena what’s wrong. Marlena thinks she’s feeling a little glum since the house is empty and quiet. Marlena points out that Belle isn’t home and John is gone, so it’s her first time alone in the night in a long time.

Dante remarks to Philip that it’s about time his family had some good luck. Philip asks how Sydney became such a card shark. Sydney explains that while Stefano was teaching Theo and Johnny chess, Roman taught her how to play cards. Sydney adds that by the time she got to boarding school, she was pretty good and thus not very popular. Gabi asks Dante if his cousin Ava taught him to play cards. Dante responds that he and Ava share the Vitali name, but they aren’t close. Gabi responds that she likes him already. Dante asks Philip about working with Ava. Philip says it’s not a fond memory. Sydney remarks that she’s heard stories. Gabi calls Ava bonkers while Dante warns that he and Ava might not be close, but he won’t allow her to be disparaged because they are family and his family looks out for one another. Sydney comments that this obviously isn’t boarding school as she fold another hand. Dante jokes that the card shark has become a goldfish. Philip remarks that he wouldn’t underestimate Sami’s daughter. Dante insists that she knows he’s just joking while Sydney says that she doesn’t joke about poker.

Chad and Belle enter the building where they find an exact copy of the chess set that Stefano left for John and Marlena. Belle notes that all the pawns are there. They then hear footsteps of someone coming and it turns out to be EJ. Belle questions what the hell he’s doing here. EJ responds that he could ask them the same thing.

Marlena envies Julie having her beautiful home and so much family in Salem. Julie tells Marlena that she’s part of the family too. Julie quotes Maya Angelou saying family isn’t only about blood, but the people who want you in their life and respect you for who you are. Julie assures Marlena that she is loved no matter what.

The poker game continues until Otto looks to win the game, but Gabi interjects and exposes that Otto was cheating by having the ace cards marked so he knew who had them. Dante tries to say that’s not how it works but Gabi insists and demands having the cards checked. Dante reluctantly agrees to have the cards checked and confirms Gabi was correct. He tells Otto he’s done and to get out, warning that he will deal with him later. Otto exits as Dante thanks Gabi.

Marlena tells Julie that she’s sure she will be a lot better when Belle gets home, but she’s worried about her in Italy. Julie questions why she’s worried since she’s on a vacation with Chad. Marlena reveals that it’s not just a vacation and it’s not just with Chad.

Belle questions if EJ is following them. EJ explains that he came to see Dominic Marino to ask him why he’s purchasing the Kiriakis Mansion as he wants to know what his intentions are before he plants roots in Salem. EJ then questions what they are doing there. Chad reveals this is where the clues in Stefano’s chess set led them.

Julie asks Marlena why Belle and Chad are really in Italy. Marlena explains that they are trying to uncover some answers to the mystery of Stefano’s chess set. Julie asks why EJ is there. Marlena informs her that EJ said he was going to see Sydney, but Sydney is in Monte Carlo as she had no idea EJ was coming. Julie says she can why she’s worried. Marlena says she spoke to Belle about the clues and it brought back some very unwelcome memories about being on Stefano’s island. Julie complains that even from the grave, Stefano wants them to pay attention to him. Marlena remarks that she thought they were rid of him and she’s tired of his games.

Dante decides that after the unfortunate incident with Otto, they will play two more additional hands of poker, winner take all which Sydney and Philip agree to. Sydney wins one hand but it comes down to Dante and Philip in the end as they go all in.

EJ tells Chad and Belle that he has a bad feeling about this and questions who this Dominic Marino is. Chad admits he has no idea. EJ argues that they hardly no anything about him despite trying. Belle calls it not unusual for a billionaire to have a low profile. EJ argues that it’s more than that as there’s not even a photo of him online. Chad agrees that it’s a little weird. EJ questions why a European hedge fund maker would be so determined to purchase the Kiriakis Estate. Chad suggests maybe it’s not their business. EJ agrees and suspects Stefano put all of this in motion because Dominic Marino has some connection to their family or to the Kiriakis family. Belle says it could be to her parents as well. EJ acknowledges the chess set being identical to the one Stefano left for Marlena and John. EJ points out a Wagner album in the room, who was Stefano’s favorite, as well as his favorite drink. EJ then opens a box of cigars. Someone is watching them on a tablet while sitting near a fireplace with a drink and a cigar. EJ tells Chad and Belle that he can’t believe it as Stefano had these cigars made in Cuba before he went under the radar, but notes that was years ago and no one makes them anymore. EJ questions what the hell is going on, what this place is and who this man is.

Dante shows his cards in the poker game, revealing four of a kind. Philip then shows his cards and wins the game with a straight flush. Dante steps away as Gabi exclaims that Philip did it and won it all. Philip thanks her as his good luck charm. Philip thanks Gabi as she kisses him.

EJ comments on Dominic Marino having the same taste as Stefano. Chad agrees that it can’t be a coincidence so EJ wonders what the hell is going on here. Belle brings up this all starting at Stefano’s will reading with the chess set. Belle then reminds them that their chess set had a hidden panel which is where they found the first clue. Chad then picks up the chess set in the house and opens the hidden panel.

Julie asks Marlena what she thinks is the meaning of her memories. Marlena says she doesn’t know and isn’t even sure they are from Stefano’s island. Marlena complains that Stefano stole so much from her that she can’t bear to give him another minute of her time. Julie urges Marlena not to let a dead man have any power over her. Marlena responds that what scares her the most is that there are still some memories that she doesn’t have and doesn’t really want to have.

Chad, Belle, and EJ go over the hidden panel in the first chess set. Belle wants to do the honors but Chad suggests he do it because a lot has changed and he’s not taking any chances. Chad then opens it up and finds a photo of Stefano holding a child, dated 1992. EJ says he has no idea who the kid is, but then wonders if it could be Dominic Marino. The person watching them closes their tablet and raises their glass while wearing Stefano’s ring. Someone else walks in to the room and he informs them that everything went as planned.

Gabi tells Philip that she just knew he would win and asks how much he has. Philip opens the case and reveals it’s not enough.

Dante is with the man who was watching Chad, Belle, and EJ. Dante informs him that Philip won and he didn’t even have to bust Otto as Gabi beat him to it. Dante adds that without Otto, the pot was never going to be enough to pay the loan and he’d never be able to save Titan. Dante declares “well played, Dom.”

Leo sits in the town square as he starts to text Javi but decides against it as he doesn’t want to come off desperate and needy. Gwen then walks by and throws her phone in frustration.

Xander begins packing his things at the Titan office when he comes across a framed photo of Sarah and Victoria. Maggie walks in and calls it a beautiful picture. Maggie informs Xander that she just got off the phone with the realtor and says that Mr. Marino has signed the paperwork to take ownership of the Kiriakis Mansion. Maggie calls it the end of an era.

At their hotel in Italy, Belle tells Chad that she feels like she’s gone over the clues so many times. Belle brings up having a romantic dinner. Chad says he will look in to making them a reservation, but Belle reveals that she just got a notification on her phone that they already got one. Chad calls that weird as he didn’t make the reservation.

EJ is in his hotel room in Italy and video calls Rita, who is lounging in a robe in the living room of the DiMera Mansion. EJ hopes Rita’s self care hasn’t interfered with her work. Rita assures it hasn’t and says she was just about to call him. They are interrupted by EJ getting a cal from Cat, but EJ rejects her call. Rita tells EJ that she’s been sleuthing on Cat Greene as he requested and she’s afraid he’s not going to be happy.

Rafe finishes a call with Kayla at home as Cat arrives. Rafe tells her that Javi is at the gym and Gabi is overseas, so he asks what’s going on. Cat responds that she thinks the situation with EJ took a turn as her plan to get ahead of everything with him may have backfired.

Maggie tells Xander that they have until the end of tomorrow and then everything has to be signed and sent back. Xander wishes there was another choice, but Maggie says there isn’t. Maggie says Philip abandoned his hail mary, so their only objective is to sell the house before EJ gets his hands on it. Xander tells Maggie that he’s so sorry as he knows how painful this must be for her. Maggie says for him too.

Chad wonders if the reservation was a mistake. Belle decides to call the restaurant and find out who made the reservation and why she got a text about it. Belle calls, but the number is not in service.

Gwen asks if it’s too much to ask for one thing to go right in her life. Gwen remarks to Leo that she’s going to kill that backstabbing bloody swine Rafe Hernandez.

Cat tells Rafe that she thought EJ believed her when she told him that she left the ISA, but all of a sudden he went AWOL and traveled to Italy to see Sydney. Cat argues that it’s way too coincidental. Rafe asks when she last spoke to EJ. Cat says it was yesterday and he was distant, feeling something was off with him. Cat adds that she just tried to call EJ and it went straight to voicemail and he hasn’t texted her back which is unlike him. Cat worries that EJ is obviously avoiding her. Cat says she knew there was a risk in telling EJ, but she thought the bigger risk was telling him nothing, so she wonders if she made the wrong choice.

Rita tells EJ that everything she’s found shows Cat was a support employee at the ISA and resigned several years ago. EJ feels that could be what the ISA wanted them to find and orders Rita to dig deeper because he needs to know if trusting Cat was a mistake. Rita agrees to keep digging but she’s not optimistic that she will find anything to stop his suspicions. Rita adds that at the moment, there are more pressing issues. EJ guesses it’s more bad news, but Rita says it’s more like abysmal.

Xander agrees with Maggie that this is very painful for him and adds that he has enormous guilt over far too many mistakes he wishes he could take back. Maggie says they all make mistakes including herself and Victor. Xander is glad Victor’s not here to see all of this. Maggie thinks Victor would confront this head on, determined to rise above it for his family. Maggie tells Xander that he is Victor’s son and encourages him that he can rise above to build something even better.

Rafe tells Cat not to panic just yet and that EJ going to Italy doesn’t mean he’s suddenly suspicious of her. Cat is surprised Rafe isn’t saying he told her so since he was the one warning her from the beginning that this operation was risky as hell. Rafe says he would hate to see their mission fail but he would hate even more for something to happen to her. Rafe asks if she knows when EJ gets back from Italy. Cat says she has no idea as he was super vague about it. Rafe says if he’s acting suspicious when he gets back, they will cross that bridge then. Cat thanks Rafe for bringing her back from the ledge so she can see the bigger picture. Rafe reminds Cat that she’s done that for him too and tells her that he actually has some good news.

Leo tells Gwen that it wouldn’t be a good idea for her to kill an FBI agent and questions where all this vengeance is coming from and what Rafe did to piss her off so badly. Gwen reminds Leo of her letter confessing what she and EJ did to Dimitri to fund the drug experiments and reveals that Rafe gave it to the hospital board. Gwen argues that the letter wouldn’t hold up in court, but it was enough for the board to reject her bid for the hospital. Leo questions how Rafe even got that letter. Gwen says that’s what she is trying to figure out. Leo swears he had nothing to do with it and reminds her that it was deleted when he went to get it. Leo bets it was her lawyer but Gwen says that he swears he has no idea how it disappeared from the files. Gwen asks if Leo is sure he didn’t tell anyone. Leo asks who he would even tell, but then he thinks back to telling Cat. Leo tells Gwen this isn’t getting them anywhere and suggests Rafe did her a favor because getting in to business with EJ as her partner would end in disaster, so she dodged a bullet. Gwen disagrees and declares that Rafe ruined everything so she’s going to make sure he pays.

EJ is furious when Rita informs him that Gwen is no longer eligible to buy the hospital and questions what the hell happened. Rita reveals that the board found out that she was EJ’s silent partner in Dr. Rolf’s experiments. EJ argues that he was using that as leverage to become her silent partner and questions how in God’s name the board found that out. EJ asks how they are going to recoup all the proceeds they lost without the money from the hospital.

Belle searches the restaurant name and finds out it doesn’t exist, so she and Chad wonder if it must be a clue. Belle realizes the clue must be the street name as they couldn’t decide whether to go to Milan or Rome and it turns out the street is named Milan in Rome. Belle declares they must be onto something.

Xander tells Maggie that he appreciates her faith in him. Xander talks about losing the company, the house, and Sarah but says he’s not a victim as he brought it all on himself. Maggie encourages him not to look at it that way and says sometimes life throws curves and stuff happens. Maggie states that they’ve both made mistakes and applauds Xander for working so hard to better himself. Xander appreciates her kindness but doesn’t think he deserves it. Maggie insists that he does, pointing out how he interacts with Philip, has reacted better in situations that would’ve set him off, and he’s a wonderful father. Maggie says seeing him with Victoria warms her heart. Xander says that means so much coming from her. Maggie adds that he stayed calm when Sarah and Victoria moved in with Brady and she knows how hard it’s been for him to be away from his daughter. Xander admits he feels like a fool because he thought he and Sarah were getting close again, but he was just deluding himself.

Belle and Chad look up all the buildings on the street address. They connect dots to looking for a green staircase and find what could be it on the map.

Rita tells EJ that he might want a drink for the next bit she’s about to share with him. EJ tells her to just pile on more bad news. Rita knows he was hoping they could scuttle the sale of the Kiriakis Mansion, but apparently Mr. Marino has already signed the paperwork. EJ asks if they have any idea why he has such a keen interest in this property. Rita says she’s afraid not. EJ argues that he told her to look in to it which she says she’s tried to do. EJ calls it out of character for her to deliver all this bad news without any answers for him. Rita apologizes and wishes she had answers but it’s been one dead end after another. Rita asks if EJ has any idea when he’ll be returning to Salem and remarks that Sydney not being there makes it seem like he went all that way for nothing. EJ responds that he wouldn’t say it was for nothing.

Rafe explains to Cat that he used Gwen’s letter to prevent her from buying the hospital and given her history as EJ’s silent partner and the antics they were involved in, Kayla and the hospital board thought it was best not to proceed with the purchase. Gwen then arrives outside, pounding on the door. Cat goes to hide in the bedroom while Gwen demands Rafe open the door.

Maggie asks Xander if Sarah and Victoria moving in with Brady is what has him so upset or if there’s something else he isn’t telling her. Xander then informs Maggie that at the Daddy Daughter Dance, he heard Sarah tell Brady that she loves him. Xander knows he shouldn’t be surprised, but he just thought that what Sarah and Brady had was more superficial than love like his time with Gwen and Kristen, but clearly their relationship is deeper than that. Xander declares that he has to accept the reality that Sarah loves another man, but he will never love another woman.

Gwen continues pounding on Rafe’s door until Rafe answers. Gwen complains about Rafe first making her leave Leo in Alamainia, forcing her to come back to Salem against her will, and now this. Gwen declares that Rafe has now ruined her life and the entire world will know she was in cahoots with EJ and think that she was apart of that disastrous science project of his. Rafe points out that she was apart of it.

Cat runs in to Leo in the town square. Leo says he was just thinking about her and asks if she has a minute to chat, so she asks what’s up. Leo brings up Gwen’s letter that he told her about a couple months ago. Leo thinks Cat reached in to her ISA bag of tricks and gave the letter to Rafe, who screwed over Gwen.

Belle and Chad continue going over their clues. They match the street address to the first three numbers of the serial number on the Lire. Belle decides she will call Paul to tell him what they found.

Cat tells Leo that she’s not ISA and claims she barely knows Rafe which means his theory is not plausible. Cat says she has to run but Leo stops her and says he’s not trying to blow her cover, but they both know there is more going on at DiMera than counterfeit purses. Leo says he has a pitch for her to team up with him.

Rafe tells Gwen that if only she would’ve taken that sweetheart deal he offered. Gwen argues that she was instructed to give him all the evidence against EJ on a silver platter to only receive little protection. Gwen complains that she’d be in the same position she’s in now and insists EJ would’ve found out. Rafe suggests she should’ve thought about that before getting in bed with EJ. Gwen calls Rafe smug and hopes he and the hospital board are happy, because without a buyer, the state will have full ownership of the hospital and they know what an absolute disaster that will turn out to be. Rafe says that remains to be seen but remarks that it’s a hell of a lot better than Gwen or EJ running the place.

EJ tells Rita that he was right about Chad and Belle following clues from Stefano’s chess set, but there’s more to it as someone has been feeding them clues in real time. Rita calls that interesting and wonders who it could be. EJ responds that he thinks they both know.

Chad and Belle wait for the phone to ring. Chad offers to get room service while they wait but Belle says she’s not hungry. Belle talks about feeling like they are so close. Belle says not long ago, they were staring at the chess set not knowing what their next move would be and they’ve come a long way together. Belle tells Chad that she couldn’t have done this without him. Belle then gets a call back from Paul and asks what he found. Belle asks if he’s serious and tells Chad that he’s not going to believe this.

Cat reminds Leo that EJ is her boss. Leo asks Cat if she has any tricks to trying to trace the manufacturers of the counterfeit purses. Cat says she doesn’t and walks away.

Xander asks Maggie if it’s strange that he only has room in his heart for one woman and can’t even imagine loving someone else like he loves Sarah. Maggie doesn’t think it’s strange, calling it old fashioned and sweet. Maggie knows he wishes they were back together, but she’s just glad things are better between them now and on friendlier terms for Victoria’s sake. Xander agrees he has that to be thankful for. Maggie states that he and Sarah deserve happiness, so she hopes he finds it.

Gwen tells Rafe that the justice system has never been able to find EJ accountable for anything and they never will. Rafe assures that he’s not giving up since he’s so close. Gwen questions how close. Rafe responds that EJ’s comeuppance is coming soon and she can trust him on that.

EJ tells Rita that it must be Dr. Rolf giving Belle those clues. Rita agrees that it makes the most sense to her. EJ orders Rita to find Dr. Rolf no matter what it takes and find out what he knows. EJ says in the meantime, he’ll be looking for his own answers in Italy.

Belle thanks Paul and says this is a huge help as they hang up. Belle then informs Chad that the address used to be a convent of the Holy Trinity which is represented by the Celtic knot and it’s owned by billionaire Dominic Marino which is where “Dom” came from. Chad exclaims that they are getting somewhere. Belle then reveals that Dominic Marino is the one buying the Kiriakis Mansion.

Leo meets with Kate at the Brady Pub and says he’s given thought to her podcast idea. Leo talks about how it will have to be rooted in facts but also require some of his own entertainment sprinkled in. Leo excitedly tells Kate that he came up with the name of “Stark Raving Mad”. At a table nearby, Tate is telling Marlena about the guy pulling a knife on Holly right outside the Pub and how Lani came to her rescue. Leo walks by and questions Lani coming to Holly’s rescue and ask if they could tell that story from the top.

Holly walks in to the town square and stops when she sees Arianna walking through with Mason. Mason is telling Arianna about a skateboarding incident. Mason then spots Holly and tells Ari that he has to get back to campus, so he’ll see her around. Mason tries to hurry off but Holly stops him and says she just wanted to thank him for offering to help Lani with the mugger. Mason responds that he didn’t do much and he didn’t do it for her as he walks away.

Philip and Gabi arrive in Monte Carlo for the poker game. Gabi doesn’t understand having to arrive so early while Philip says seeing the room gets him in the zone. Gabi asks if he’s getting nervous. Philip acknowledges that his whole family’s future is riding on this game and tries to claim he’s chill. Gabi points out his hands shaking and him being pale as she questions if he’s sure he wants to do this. Philip assures that he does and that he always gets revved up before a game as it keeps him laser focused. Philip points out that now Gabi looks nervous. Gabi admits she is a bit and worries that adrenaline can help him but can also be addictive. Philip responds that what’s addicting is the need to win and that’s what he’s going to do for his family, for their future, and for Gabi.

Leo returns to Kate and tells her about Lani heroically rescuing Holly from a mugger who was after the family jewels and tried to rip her necklace off. Leo notes that Holly is fine now thanks to Lani and declares they just scored podcast gold.

Arianna questions Holly and Mason knowing each other. Holly informs her that Mason was the guy that showed up after Lani saved her from the mugger. Holly explains that before that, Julie introduced them and he totally ignored her and was really rude to her. Holly adds that in their first sociology class, the professor put Mason in her group, but he just walked off to another group. Arianna wonders what his deal is. Holly points out that they seemed to be getting along really well. Ari admits that he’s been friendly to her. Holly guesses that the problem is her then and questions how someone can hate her without even knowing her. Ari invites her to the Pub for coffee but Holly says she has to get to the library as her professor assigned a bunch of reading. Ari argues that the semester just started. Ari then gets a call from her supervisor at DiMera, informing her that her internship is ending as they don’t have any more work for her. Holly tells her that she’s sorry but points out that she didn’t want to work for those jerks anyway after what they did to Titan and her family. Holly encourages that Ari will find a better internship anyway where the people are actually decent human beings.

Gabi expresses to Philip that she’s worried he will keep chasing the high of winning no matter what happens tonight. Philip tells her that she doesn’t have to worry about him gambling and swears that he has it under control. Philip asks if she doesn’t believe him. Gabi reveals that she spoke to his mother before they left and clarifies that Kate doesn’t know what they are doing, but she was worried about him and wanted her to look out for him. Philip questions why Kate does that. Gabi says it’s because she loves him. Gabi admits she’s worried too that the poker game could send Philip down a bad path. Gabi knows he conquered his gambling addiction but compares it to a friend with a past alcohol addiction who had one drink and then couldn’t stop. Philip promises he’s not going on a crazy bender and says they are committed to this now with her money that he’s going to win her back and then some. Philip tells Gabi no more worrying as he’s got this.

Javi goes to the Brady Pub and runs in to Leo. They have a brief chat as Javi says he’s just picking up a breakfast sandwich and heads to the counter. Leo turns to Marlena and complains that Javi is still avoiding him. Javi comes back by and greets Marlena, then tells her to have a good day as he exits the Pub. Leo tells Marlena that he can’t take this anymore as he just wants to go after Javi, tell him how feels, and ask him why he’s being so cold to him. Marlena sees he has thought this through and tells him to go ahead and talk to Javi. Marlena reminds him to take it easy and not push. Leo insists that he’s chill as he then runs out of the Pub.

Tate joins Holly in the town square. Holly tells Tate about Mason being a jerk to her in class and then she tried to thank him for helping with the mugging and he said he didn’t do it for her. Tate says that Mason obviously has issues. Holly adds that she wouldn’t care if she didn’t have two classes with him every week. Tate points out that she doesn’t have any more classes with him today. Holly says she was just going to the library to get some work done. Tate suggests she forget about the library and after the morning she had, she deserves a break. Tate mentions that his only client for the day called in sick, so he suggests they take a day trip to the lake. Holly is unsure since she has a lot of reading to do. Tate encourages her to forget about the reading and they can have a cookout by the water and go swimming. Holly agrees it sounds like a great idea as they kiss. Leo catches up to Javi in the town square and tells him that he’s been trying to stay away because he knows Javi doesn’t want to get back together and he’s been trying not to be his normal pushy self since he does want to get back together. Leo then stops and says that he’s chill and not trying to get back with him. Leo then reveals that he knows Javi wanted to travel all the way to Alamainia to save him.

Gabi asks if Philip wants some alone time to continue getting in the zone, but Philip asks her to stay and says he likes having her there. Gabi jokes that she had to twist his arm to let her come. Philip says he just didn’t want to impose since she had already made the trip possible. Philip asks if she wants to make a show of playing the newly engaged couple in case anyone is watching, so they don’t come off like just travel companions. Gabi agrees that they shouldn’t blow their cover. They go to kiss but are interrupted when Sydney DiMera walks in and surprises Gabi.

Kate sits with Marlena at the Pub and informs her that she took Jack’s offer to become the new editor of the Spectator. Marlena says she’s so pleased for her and congratulates her on the good news. Arianna arrives and greets both of her great grandmas together. Ari asks if she can join them because she could really use the company. They say of course and asks if everything is alright. Ari responds that it’s not because she just lost her internship at DiMera. Kate turns away and thinks back to Gabi requesting that she have Ari’s internship revoked. Marlena tells Ari that she’s so sorry to hear that. Kate claims she is too.

Javi questions Leo as to who told him that he wanted to save him. Leo says it was Gabi and that she also told him it was the reason that Gus broke up with him. Javi argues that Leo was basically kidnapped and doesn’t think it’s crazy that he would be worried about him. Leo agrees, especially if Javi still had feelings for him. Leo adds that Gabi also said that Javi didn’t want to admit that because he’s afraid of having his heart broken again. Leo asks if Gabi was right.

Kate tells Arianna that she’s so sorry her internship is over as she knows how much she enjoyed it. Arianna worries that she got let go because she wasn’t doing a good enough job. Kate assures that it wasn’t personal and says that her boss raved to her about her and that he was very impressed. Kate encourages that it’s just the corporate world. Mason enters the Pub and greets them. Marlena introduces Mason to Kate, noting that Mason works as a volunteer at the mental health hotline that she oversees. Marlena adds that she thinks he knows Arianna. Ari confirms they have a lot of classes together. Kate asks about him attending Salem U. Mason explains that he joined the military after high school and is now going to get his degree. Kate thanks him for his service. Mason says he’s just grateful for the opportunity. Mason says he should get going and tells them that it was a pleasure as he heads to the counter. Kate sits down and comments that he seems like a very nice young man. Marlena agrees that he’s very dedicated. Arianna then steps away to confront Mason about her good friend Holly Jonas.

Gabi tells Sydney that she can’t believe this. Philip mentions not seeing Sydney since she was a kid. Gabi asks what she’s doing here. Sydney assumes the same thing they are doing and reveals that she came to scope out the venue as a pregame ritual. Gabi is surprised to learn that Sydney is playing in the poker game. Sydney informs them that Sami’s fiancée, Dante Vitali, is hosting the game and bought her a spot because he knows she’s good at it, in exchange for a part of the winnings. Gabi questions Dante hosting. Philip states that he had no idea either. Sydney calls it crazy that the three of them ended up here together. Philip asks her to keep it to herself that she saw them as they don’t want it to get back to anyone that they are gambling in Monte Carlo. Sydney questions why not.

Kate questions Arianna being cold to Mason, but seeming eager to go talk to him. Marlena checks her phone and sees she missed a text from Sydney, saying she’s going to the French Riviera, which means she is not in Italy where EJ went to go see her. Mason asks Ari if Holly said something to her about him. Ari confirms that Holly said he was a jerk to her and she saw the cold way that he talked to her and then couldn’t get away from her fast enough which he admits. Ari argues that he doesn’t even know Holly as she said they just met yesterday. Arianna questions what’s going on and what Mason has against Holly.

Holly and Tate go to the lake for their picnic. Holly comments on being glad no one is there while Tate points out there’s no chance of running in to any creepy people like Mason and adds that it really pisses him off that Mason would be so rude to her. Holly says to Hell with him as Tate is the only guy she wants to think about right now as they kiss.

Javi wishes Gabi hadn’t told Leo that. Leo asks if it’s true that Javi still has feelings for him. Javi doesn’t think they should go down that road again. Leo suggests they go down the friendship road then, so Javi doesn’t have to avoid him in public. Leo says they can just go out for coffee with no flirting and jokes that he can turn his charm off. Leo asks Javi to go down that road with him.

Philip explains to Sydney that his mom doesn’t approve of gambling, so if she found out that they were in Monte Carlo at a high stakes poker game, he would never hear the end of it. Sydney assures that she can relate as she has plenty of experience keeping her various exploits from her mother, adding that his secret is safe with her. Sydney adds that they aren’t the only ones keeping their travel plans under wraps as EJ went to Italy to surprise her, but since she didn’t know he was coming, she wasn’t there. Gabi jokes that she got lucky while Philip reminds her that not everyone feels the same way about EJ as they do. Sydney says that she’s used to her dad clashing with people so she’s built up an immunity to it. Gabi says they should get going to get ready for tonight. Sydney spots her ring and questions if Gabi and Philip are engaged.

Leo tells Javi that he misses going over the latest Housewives episodes together and visiting Trey together. Javi gives in and agrees they can get a coffee sometime. Leo is excited for whenever he’s ready and says they have each other’s number to be in touch, so they agree to see one another soon as Javi then walks away.

Philip tells Sydney that he and Gabi are engaged, but that’s another secret they haven’t shared with anyone yet. Gabi adds that Philip just proposed last night. Philip talks about being inspired by Monte Carlo while Gabi calls him such a romantic. Sydney congratulates them. Gabi repeats that they were hoping not to spoil the surprise. Sydney agrees not to tell a soul. Sydney says she should get back to her hotel and she will see them back there tonight at the poker table as she exits. Gabi tells Philip that she can’t believe they ran in to a DiMera all the way in Monte Carlo and wonders if they can trust her.

Arianna demands an answer from Mason as to why he would treat Holly like that when he doesn’t even know her. Ari adds that it really upset Holly right after she was attacked. Mason then admits that he doesn’t know Holly but that she’s responsible for the death of someone that he did know.

Tate and Holly kiss until Holly gets a text from an unknown number, asking if she’s having fun.

Kate tells Marlena that there are plenty of other reasons EJ might be in Italy. Marlena would like to know what they are. Marlena then shows Kate the photo of the Celtic knot on her phone and asks if it means anything to her from when she was with Stefano or the DiMeras. Kate says it doesn’t and asks why she asks. Marlena responds that she’s been having lots of memories that she can’t seem to shake and she’s wondering if it’s about the time she was on Stefano’s island. Marlena declares she’d like to know what those memories mean.

George meets Johnny at home while Johnny questions this not being able to wait. George says he needs to know why he met with Theo about DiMera Pharmaceuticals instead of Johnny. Johnny explains that Theo insisted and it was getting harder to cover why when his wife is going through chemo and he’s supposed to be on paternity leave and he didn’t want Theo getting suspicious. George reveals that it’s too late for that as Theo told him that he thinks Johnny is hiding something from him. George then asks what Johnny is going to do to get Theo to back the hell off.

Xander is at the Brady Pub, on a phone call with a Titan employee, saying he doesn’t know what will happen to their job if DiMera takes over and they will just have to wait and see. Xander hangs up and looks on his phone at a photo of he and Victoria at the Daddy Daughter Dance. He then thinks back to overhearing Sarah tell Brady that she loves him and wants to be with him.

Brady joins Steve at the Black Patch office. Steve says he’s glad he’s back because he has something to show him.

At the hospital, Stephanie asks Kayla if Joy is out of surgery yet. Kayla confirms Joy just got back to her room and is in recovery. Stephanie asks if it went smoothly. Kayla responds that she’s sure Alex will give her an update since he’s in the room with Joy and Kelsey now. Stephanie says she has to run. Kayla questions her not waiting to see Alex. Stephanie doesn’t want to hear him tell her how happy Joy was to see him and Kelsey when she woke up and how she’s not able to be around Kelsey because she’s so dangerous. Stephanie remarks that she doesn’t think she can handle anything that Alex has to say right now.

Joy wakes up in her hospital bed with Alex, Kelsey, and Sarah at her side. Joy asks Sarah how the surgery went. Sarah says there were no complications and it went great. Joy then tells them that she can’t feel her legs and questions why she can’t. Sarah calls it completely normal and that the anesthetic will wear off gradually. Joy apologizes for freaking out. Sarah says it’s understandable and encourages her to focus on resting and her daughter. Sarah says her shift is ending, so Kayla will be in to check on her soon. Joy asks if she will be able to go home soon and back to normal. Sarah says definitely as she exits. Joy guesses Alex must be happy about that too since he won’t be single dad anymore. Alex says he didn’t mind but he’s sure Kelsey will be happy to have her mom back. Joy calls Kelsey their little angel and says she needs both of them.

Stephanie complains to Kayla that Alex caved and signed the custody agreement without even talking to her. Kayla tells her that she’s so sorry. Stephanie says she is too as she wonders if her and Alex aren’t meant to be.

Steve and Brady talk about the evidence being left for Sarah to find out about arsenic in Holly getting sick and how they both felt EJ was behind it. Steve talks about watching the security footage and only looking for EJ. Steve brings up Arianna overhearing EJ telling Johnny that Holly didn’t know anything. Brady hopes he’s not saying it was Johnny. Steve says the picture is a little fuzzy but brings Brady over to take a look for himself.

Johnny tells George that he’s sorry Theo gave him the third degree, but shutting him out of those meetings raises suspicion. Johnny adds that the Coriseal nightmare is finally over. George questions who says it’s over. Johnny thought the whole thing was put to bed, but George reveals that EJ has been getting nervous about it again. George tells Johnny that going forward, he will stay up with him in case something like this comes up again but Johnny says he can’t have that happening. George argues that Johnny is the CEO of DiMera and warns that the last thing he needs is Theo playing detective. George adds that Johnny is the one who should be tossing and turning at night, not him, because if any of this gets out, he’s not taking the fall.

Sarah enters the Pub and greets Xander. Xander invites her to join him but Sarah says she’s just picking up takeout. Xander assumes she’s getting food for her and Brady. Xander adds that he thought they would be eating out to celebrate Sarah officially moving in. Sarah says Brady and Rachel already ate so he was just picking up food before she goes to pick up Victoria. They talk about it almost being Victoria’s bedtime. Sarah asks if Xander got all moved in to his apartment. Xander says almost and that he found one of her boxes of clothes, which Sarah says she can pick up whenever she drops off Victoria. Sarah sits with Xander and asks him if everything is okay. Xander insists that he’s fine and just really wishes things worked out differently for the company and their family. Sarah says she does too, more than anything. Xander decides he should go and hurries out of the Pub.

Kayla questions Stephanie worrying that her and Alex aren’t meant to be. Kayla knows it’s been a hard year but points out that Joy agreed to re-evaluate in a year which she thinks is progress. Stephanie asks what if Joy still doesn’t want her anywhere near Kelsey in a year as she thinks Joy is just stringing her along because she’s a conniving schemer who will do anything to get what she wants.

Joy tells Alex that he doesn’t have to stay and can go rest with Kelsey, but Alex says he doesn’t mind so Joy admits she would appreciate the company at least until she can feel her legs again.

Sarah walks through the town square and sees Xander picking up flowers.

Steve explains to Brady that it’s easy to miss but he ran the video through an AI enhancement filter where you can see the reflection in the window. Brady confirms that it’s Johnny.

Johnny questions George saying he won’t take the fall for this when he’s the one who had the contaminated pills dumped and buried in a well where people drink from. George argues that wasn’t in his job description and a specialist should’ve been hired. George warns that if any of this gets out, they will be gunning for the man at the top and that man is Johnny.

Brady can’t believe Johnny was actively involved in something so shameful. Steve points out that it only proves he was at the hospital. Brady points out the timestamp and how the 4th was Trey’s birthday. Brady doesn’t think there’s any way Johnny would have skipped out on his kid’s first birthday party to go get a prescription. Steve believes that if Johnny was involved, it was to save Holly’s life. Brady points out that it would be while helping EJ cover up a crime that killed a lot of people. Steve points out it’s all circumstantial while Brady says that when there’s this much smoke, there’s got to be fire.

Johnny stops George and questions what he’s talking about since he wasn’t even at DiMera when all of this went down. George responds that the shareholders won’t care and all that will matter is that he’s the head of a company involved in an active coverup operation. Johnny complains that this cannot be happening. George tells Johnny that he’s going to let him sweat this out and warns him not to send Theo to meet with him again. George then exits the apartment and walks away as Xander is arriving at the door with flowers.

Alex decides to go get Joy something to eat from the cafeteria, so he exits with Kelsey. Joy then turns on the TV where this time, she imagines her and Alex as a married couple on a 90s sitcom doing aerobics together when they find out she’s pregnant with another child and declares they are going to be the happiest family.

Kayla tells Stephanie that she knows she doesn’t trust Joy, but what’s important is that she and Alex trust each other. Kayla points out that Alex is crazy about her and is trying to so hard to be a good dad to Kelsey and a good husband to Stephanie. Stephanie argues that Kelsey is his priority. Kayla doesn’t think she should look at it like that and that his devotion to his daughter shows what a good man he is. Kayla believes that when Joy can take care of Kelsey herself, Stephanie and Alex will have time together if she believes her marriage is worth fighting for. Alex then comes by with Kelsey. Steve arrives and greets them. Steve tells Kayla that he came to bring her some midnight snacks but didn’t expect the whole family to be there. Kayla suggests she and Steve take Kelsey for a walk so Alex and Stephanie can talk which they agree to. Alex tells Stephanie that he’s really sorry as he should’ve never signed the custody papers without talking to her first. Stephanie says she’s sorry too because she should’ve been more understanding. Alex feels she’s been more than understanding, patient, and forgiving which shows him just how amazing of a person she is. Alex says the good news is that Joy’s surgery went really well, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Alex promises Stephanie that they will make their way through this.

Brady and Sarah go to the bedroom and talk about getting Victoria to sleep for the first time in her new home. Brady thinks she will be very happy there. Sarah says right now it feels right and she knows this is what’s best for them.

Johnny answers the door and asks what brings Xander by. Xander says he thought he would pop by and see Chanel and congratulate them on the new baby. Johnny thanks him and says Chanel is asleep, but he’ll make sure he gets the flowers. Johnny then hears Olivia on the baby monitor and starts to say he needs to go check on her but Xander encourages him to give it some time, explaining that it’s a weak whine and it’s normal for newborns to make such noises during their sleep. Olivia then quiets down so Johnny acknowledges that Xander was right and thanks him. Johnny points out that they adopted Trey when he was a few months old, so this is their first time with a newborn. Xander says it’s been awhile for him, but he remembers it all like yesterday with Rachel while he missed out on those early moments with Victoria which was his fault because Sarah didn’t trust him. Xander advises Johnny to be very mindful of the decisions he makes because the wrong ones could cost him very dearly. Johnny questions what he means by that. Xander says he didn’t mean to imply anything and just got swept up in his regrets. Johnny says it’s fine and he’s the one who owes Xander an apology for everything EJ has done. Johnny says he forgave Xander for the lawsuit but admits he was angry, so when EJ said he’d make Titan pay, he thought an eye for an eye sounded fair, but now after seeing how far EJ has taken it and they are losing their company and house, he’s sorry for everything his family has done to Xander’s family.

Sarah is shocked when Brady tells her about Johnny leaving his son’s first birthday party and his wife’s side to cover up EJ’s tracks. Brady points out that the clue he left did pretty much save Holly’s life. Sarah says she is grateful for that while Brady acknowledges that a more direct response would’ve been more helpful. Sarah asks if he thinks they can get Johnny to admit to any of this. Brady says they haven’t been able to yet, so Sarah guesses they are at another dead end. Brady worries that with Johnny in deeper than they thought, he doesn’t think he’s going to crack. Brady says Johnny’s a smart kid and knows there’s too much at stake, but they do have another lead to pursue. Sarah is tired of spinning their wheels since they know EJ is behind this nightmare but can’t prove it. Brady says not unless they find an old bottle of Coriseal in someone’s medicine cabinet which Sarah calls not likely. Sarah declares that it’s time for plan B which means taking off the kid gloves and putting pressure on DiMera.

Xander tells Johnny that it’s big of him to come clean like this and very courageous. Xander accepts his apology and wishes he could go back to undo all the plagiarism business along with so many other things. Johnny says there’s a lot he wishes he could go back and undo as well. Xander advises Johnny to hold onto Chanel and the kids above all else. Johnny assures that he will as they are his life and his whole world.

Steve returns to Stephanie at the hospital and says it looks like she and Alex were having a productive talk. Stephanie says he was apologizing for not consulting with her about the custody agreement and she apologized for reacting so badly. Steve calls it a positive step. Stephanie says he and Kayla are always trying to get her to see the bright side. Steve asks Stephanie for her darkest though. Stephanie responds that she keeps finding herself in situations that make her feel completely powerless and she doesn’t know if it’s because she is powerless or she’s choosing to be.

Alex, Kelsey, and Kayla return to Joy. Kayla tests the feeling in Joy’s feet but she says she can’t feel anything. Kayla says it’s okay as everyone’s body reacts differently. Joy begins to panic that the surgery was a failure and that she’s paralyzed now while Kayla and Alex try to keep her calm.

Brady agrees with Sarah that they have to take off the kid gloves. Brady hugs her and praises her inclination to always do the right thing which he calls a welcome change in his life. Sarah feels the same about being someone so grounded and dependable as they kiss.

Johnny holds Olivia and says he wants her to be proud of her dad, so from now on, no more mistakes and the mistakes that he has made, he’s going to fix.

Steve tells Stephanie that she is not powerless and brings up how much she has been through. Steve encourages that she is strong and a fighter. Stephanie says apparently to a fault since as a result of her fighting to take control of her life, Alex and Joy are hiring lawyers and signing contracts that affect her marriage and her life while she sits on the sidelines with no control over any of it. Steve argues that she can’t control what Joy or Alex do. Steve reminds Stephanie that she has the power to walk away from her marriage, but he doesn’t think that’s what she wants. Stephanie confirms it isn’t because she loves Alex with all her heart. Steve declares that she will stay and fight for her marriage then. Steve adds that it’s not something that’s happening to her, but a powerful choice that she is making. Stephanie thanks him and says she really needed to hear that. Steve hugs her as she cries.

Kayla tells Joy that she’s a long way from being diagnosed with long term paralysis as she’s most likely going to subside on her own. Joy cries that this can’t be happening and that Kelsey needs her. Alex encourages that it’s going to be okay and that Kelsey is always going to have her no matter what. Alex says they both have him too and hugs Joy as she cries.

Xander goes home and tearfully holds the box of Sarah’s clothes that got mixed in with his.

Sarah and Brady kiss in bed and say I love you to each other.

Xander turns out the lights and lays in bed alone.

Gabi goes to the Brady Pub and tells Kate that she has a huge favor to ask of her. Kate calls that a coincidence, because she has a huge favor to ask of Gabi as well.

Chad and Belle go to a café in Italy, talking about being kicked out of the DOM Hotel. Belle wishes they knew what they were looking for. Chad encourages that they just got started while Paul and the ISA are analyzing clues. Belle feels they need to get organized while Chad suggests taking time out to enjoy Italy as they kiss.

Gwen meets Leo in the town square. Leo tells her that he started digging in to the counterfeit Gabi Chic purses and he hit on something unexpected that’s taken on a life of it’s own which is why he needs her help. Leo talks about DiMera Enterprises being an obvious suspect, saying Stefano started the company as a front for his illegal activities. Gwen argues that was in the past and it’s now a multi-million dollar company. Leo thinks the counterfeit purses is just the tip of the iceberg, that DiMera Enterprises is playing dirty, and that Gwen knows more than she’s letting on which she denies. Leo argues that Gwen and EJ were partners for a year, cooking up a serum for eternal life, so he questions expecting him to believe she doesn’t know more of DiMera’s black market deals. Leo knows she’s seen the dark side and asks what she knows about DiMera Pharmaceuticals.

EJ is in his hotel in Italy and calls Sydney, leaving a message that he’s in Rome and he’s dying to see her. EJ says to call him as soon as she gets this so they can make plans. EJ hangs up and then gets a call from Cat. Cat says she got his text and he really surprised her by taking off so suddenly. Cat asks if everything is okay with Sydney. EJ says she’s fine and he just decided it’s been far too long since he’s seen her and since Belle and Chad were taking the jet, he figured he’d catch a ride. EJ asks if Cat can hold down the fort and reschedule his meetings. Cat says of course and asks when he will be back. EJ admits he’s not sure. Cat says she will miss him. EJ then thinks back to Cat telling him that she was ISA. Cat asks if he’s still there.

Gabi asks Kate what kind of favor she’s talking about. Kate tells her to go first. Gabi says she’s grateful for Kate asking DiMera Enterprises to give Arianna her internship, but she doesn’t want her working there anymore because it’s getting intense and DiMera is getting cut throat. Kate argues that DiMera has been cut throat way before Ari started working there and that if Gabi doesn’t want her working there, she should just tell her. Gabi says she can’t since Ari just forgave her for what happened with Liam and she would think she’s trying to control her life again. Kate questions what she wants her to do. Gabi asks Kate to go to her friend and tell them to revoke Arianna’s internship.

Gwen tells Leo that her work was only with EJ and had nothing to do with DiMera. Gwen points out how many times he’s swung at EJ, arguing that he’s Teflon and nothing sticks. Leo asks if Gwen is afraid. Gwen argues that they both know EJ is very well connected, so if she doesn’t play nice, he will tell the hospital board that she was previously in cahoots with him and they cannot have that. Leo asks what her plan is then. Gwen reveals that she’s going to throw her lot in with EJ and make sure he doesn’t double cross her again. Gwen explains that she will be the owner on record and the one with the power while EJ will be her silent partner. Leo calls her delusional and says that plan is a catastrophe waiting to happen.

Belle tells Chad that her parents actually got remarried right here in front of the fountain. Belle mentions John giving Marlena the coin that she gave to her so she would always feel close to him. Chad suggests the fountain might give her a wish. Belle says she’d never part with her coin, so Chad reveals he has change and suggests they make a wish together. Chad wishes that whatever they find here gives Belle and her family some peace. Belle calls him sweet and asks what about his family.

Cat asks if EJ can hear her. EJ claims he was distracted by a text. Cat questions if there’s another reason for EJ taking off so suddenly and without saying goodbye. EJ asks what other reason there would be. Cat suggests maybe he left because of what she confessed to him.

Chad guesses his family does have a stake in this too. Belle asks what if Stefano’s final message to her family has serious implications for his. Belle suggests Chad be prepared for that. Chad responds that he’s glad they are in this together. They then toss coins in to the fountain and make their wishes.

Kate tells Gabi that she doesn’t want Arianna at DiMera either, especially since she’s already been targeted, so she agrees to ask her friend to have her removed. Gabi thanks her while Kate thanks her for giving her a heads up since she knows EJ is on the warpath again. Kate declares that with EJ’s sights on her family, she wants her great granddaughter as far away from EJ and the company as they can get her.

Gwen complains that Leo is being alarmist while Leo cannot believe Gwen would hitch her wagon to EJ after everything he’s done to her. Gwen argues that if the truth comes out, she will lose the hospital and her entire investment, and then she will become a pariah like EJ. Leo knows that Gwen thinks owning the hospital will endear her to the Hortons and to Jack, but warns that she can’t have a relationship with her father if she’s dead. Leo argues that Dimitri left her with enough money that she could still walk away. Gwen remarks that there’s no such thing as enough money. Leo says he doesn’t believe that anymore which Gwen mocks. Leo tells Gwen that there’s more to life than just money, there’s family and friends and he considers her both. Leo tells Gwen that he loves her and they’ve finally mended faces, so he asks her not to screw it up by dying on him.

EJ tells Cat that he was surprised to learn that she worked for the ISA, but he doesn’t hold her past against her, and insists that he just wanted to see Sydney. Cat says she hopes he has a great time then. EJ tells her to reach out if she needs to as they hang up.

Kate tells Gabi that they will tell Arianna the excuse is that the company is downsizing. Gabi thanks her and hopes she can do the favor Kate wants as well. Kate tells her that it’s about her business trip with Philip. Kate brings up that Philip can’t stand the thought of losing Titan and the house, so he’s on the hunt for a miracle. Kate asks Gabi not to let Philip do anything stupid or impulsive since they both know his wild ideas always come back in a very bad way.

Gwen tells Leo not to worry as she has no intention of dying anytime soon. Cat walks up and says she would hope not. Leo tells Cat it’s perfect timing, but Leo gets a text that he’s late for a meeting, so he’ll be back ASAP. Leo walks off, while Cat asks Gwen why Leo thinks she’s going to die.

EJ finds Belle and Chad at the café in Rome and says he hasn’t gotten ahold of Sydney yet. Belle asks why he doesn’t go drop in on Sami. EJ admits he doesn’t think she would be thrilled to see him and asks if Belle will be visiting her sister. Belle admits that she doesn’t plan to and didn’t tell Sami they were there as she felt Sami would be too judgmental about the reasons they came, so it was better not to engage. EJ agrees and talks about Sami eventually costing you your sanity. EJ jokes that he should warn Dante Vitali, but now that he’s put a ring on it, he might have already lost his sanity. EJ then brings up relationships ending badly and asks Chad how much he knows about Cat Green’s life before she turned up pretending to be Abigail. Chad responds that he’s not going to continue this conversation. EJ asks Chad to at least answer one quick yes or no question. EJ then asks if Cat ever told Chad that she was former ISA.

Gabi promises Kate that she will keep Philip’s feet on the ground. Leo arrives and apologizes for being late as his phone only just told him they had a meeting. Gabi says she was just leaving and thanks Kate as she exits. Leo guesses Jack just put this meeting on his calendar and asks Kate if there’s a story. Kate realizes Chad didn’t tell him and reveals that Jack offered her a position as the new metro editior at the Spectator and she’s accepted, which makes her Leo’s new boss.

Gwen tells Cat that Leo was just being dramatic after she told him that she was training with Tate and thinking about running the 5K in this year’s turkey trot. Gwen points out that they haven’t had a chance to catch up, so she invites Cat to join her for a bloody mary which she accepts. Cat mentions EJ being in Italy, visiting Sydney. Gwen remarks that EJ is doing everything he can to prevent her from buying the hospital. Cat asks how that is going. Gwen says slowly since they all have her bid, but she’s heard nothing. Cat asks if it’s really happening. Gwen says she hopes so, but all she knows is that EJ is out. Gwen asks about Cat since Kayla mentioned she stay on as the new administrative assistant. Gwen adds that if her bid does go through, that offer still stands. Cat thanks her and says she doesn’t know what her next move is, mentioning that EJ asked her to be his personal assistant. Gwen asks if she’s having a change of heart. Cat says she’s not, but EJ might be. Gwen questions why. Cat calls it complicated as she told EJ something about her past that she thought he should know and next thing she knows, he’s skipping town. Gwen tells her not to take it personally since everybody knows EJ just thinks about himself. Gwen advises Cat to look at it as a blessing in disguise and to tell EJ to keep his job and shove it while she stays at the hospital with her, as far away from EJ as possible.

Belle questions Cat being with the ISA as Chad says that doesn’t make sense and questions why she would tell EJ that. EJ explains that Cat said she didn’t want any secrets between them and claims she was some sort of analyst at a desk job for the ISA, but cut ties with them right before her accident where she met him in the hospital right here in Italy. Chad argues that there’s no way that Shane would let Cat pretend to be Abigail if he knew that Clyde Weston was after her since it would hurt too many people he cares about. EJ calls that a fair point. Belle asks EJ if he’s afraid that the ISA is after him. EJ laughs off that they are all after him. EJ suggests she ask Paul if he should be worried. EJ then gets a call from his daughter Sydney and steps away to answer, then asks her what’s wrong. EJ tells her not to worry as he understands and hangs up. Belle asks if everything is okay. EJ says it seems he’s come all this way for nothing as he won’t be able to see Sydney since she’s not in Italy as she’s traveling. Chad questions EJ just finding that out now and not telling her that he was coming. EJ responds that he wanted to surprise her. Belle argues that Sydney wasn’t the real reason that EJ wanted to come along. Chad accuses EJ of using that excuse to follow them to Italy. EJ insists that he missed his daughter and wanted to see her. Chad tells EJ to admit that he came to spy on them.

Gabi joins Cat and Gwen in the town square as she agrees with Gwen that Cat should stay away from EJ. Cat thanks them but says she can take care of herself. Gabi responds that they can too but they’ve both gone in to the ring with EJ and came out bloody. Gwen asks if Cat knows what EJ did to her and says he kicked her to the curb after her divorce from Dimitri just because she was no longer a DiMera. Gwen states that EJ can’t be trusted. Gabi says he can be trusted to be a bastard. Gabi informs Cat that she had an affair with EJ which makes her sick now and admits she only did it to get back at Stefan. Gabi adds that after that, EJ tried to keep her inheritance from her and most recently went after her daughter which Cat questions. Gabi responds that EJ or one of his minions had Ari’s bag stolen at DiMera because it was a prototype of her new design and now the counterfeit is in mass production, ripping them off of millions. Gwen adds that Leo thinks the purse snatching is just the tip of the iceberg and that DiMera Enterpries is involved in a lot of dodgy business. Cat questions if they are serious. Gabi says she’s damn right they are. Cat asks what kind of proof they have.

Leo tells Kate that it will be like old times when he worked for her Body and Soul. Kate says there will be changes as Leo will be helping them expand their digital presence, so she wants him to start a podcast. Leo says they’ll need to come up with something completely his own. Kate warns him not to take too long because the launch is tomorrow and she expects his pitches on her desk first thing tomorrow morning.

EJ argues that he didn’t travel all this way to spy on Chad and Belle. EJ tells Chad that he knows he’s inclined to play hero even though he has no idea who he’s up against, so he does advise caution. Chad warns EJ to stay out of his face and travel 5000 miles back to Salem as he and Belle walk away. EJ rubs his hand where he’s missing Stefano’s ring.

Chad and Belle return to their hotel room. Chad notes that they have a few hours until dinner and can get some rest, but they end up kissing onto the bed.

Gabi admits they don’t have any proof yet, but argues that it’s too much of a coincidence that Ari’s handbag went missing weeks before the bags were to hit the market and it reeks of EJ. Leo returns and takes a big drink of a bloody mary. Gwen asks what happened to him. Leo says he’ll explain later and guesses they’ve been gossiping without him, so he says to spill the tea. Gwen says it’s nothing he hasn’t heard before as she was just telling Cat that EJ is a wanker. Gabi thinks they’ve been giving Cat the wrong advice and that she shouldn’t quit because she’s perfectly placed where she is. Leo agrees since Cat is more than qualified to help them take down EJ.

EJ calls Rita and says he needs to know if she’s been able to find Stefano’s ring. EJ argues that it has to be somewhere and questions how hard she’s been looking, wondering where the hell it could be.

Someone sitting at a chess board with Stefano’s photo nearby opens up an envelope and pulls out Stefano’s ring which he then puts on his finger.

Joy remains in her hospital bed, going over the custody papers, until Kayla comes in with Kelsey. Joy is happy to greet Kelsey, but questions why she’s there. Kayla explains that she and Steve volunteered to babysit so that Alex and Stephanie could go have a good time. Joy remarks that it would’ve been nice if someone let her know.

Stephanie cooks Alex his favorite breakfast at home and says she’s missed spoiling him as they kiss along with being under the same roof as him and waking up next to him. Alex assures he’s missed all that too, more than she knows. Alex comments on the flowers on the table, but Stephanie reveals those are not for him.

Marlena joins Abe and Roman at the Brady Pub as they are talking about setting a date for Lexie’s memorial celebration of life. Marlena tells them to let her know when it is and she’ll be there and if they need any help. Abe responds that they have to wait for EJ and Chad to get back from Italy. Marlena questions EJ going to Italy.

Paulina checks on Chanel at the hospital. Chanel says she doesn’t have to fuss over her or stay with her. Paulina says she told her she would stay with her during her chemo and refuses to leave her alone. Chanel reminds her that Johnny is going to stay with her while Paulina points out that he’s not there yet. Chanel says he will be and tells Paulina to go run her city. Paulina says she has her phone and that Chanel needs her, so she’s not going anywhere.

Theo and Johnny finish a meeting at DiMera Enterprises. Theo tells Johnny he can go now if he wants. Johnny questions what the rush is. Theo says they covered everything and brings up that Chanel is getting chemo treatment today. Johnny says that Paulina is there and he’s heading there after his meeting with George. Theo informs Johnny that he’s got that meeting covered. Johnny argues that DiMera Pharmaceuticals is his department, so he’d rather take the meeting himself. Theo questions why and asks if Johnny doesn’t trust him. Johnny assures that he does, but Theo feels it doesn’t sound like it. Johnny says he’s just trying to lighten Theo’s load as he just lost his mom and still had to pick up his slack after Olivia was born. Theo argues that Johnny has two kids and a wife going through chemo, adding that he’s looked at the numbers and spreadsheets so he’s ready for the meeting. Johnny argues that’s not all there is to it and that there’s a personal touch as well. Theo laughs off the idea of him not having that. Johnny explains that he and George have developed a connection. Theo questions what is going on and if there is something going on with DiMera Pharmaceuticals that he doesn’t want him to know about.

Abe tells Marlena that EJ apparently wanted to tag along with Chad and Belle to spend some time with Sydney. Roman says he just spoke with Sydney and she didn’t mention that to him. Marlena wonders if EJ is trying to surprise her. Abe notes that his text did say it’s a last minute decision. Roman guesses it makes sense since the DiMera jet was already going. Marlena hopes that’s the only reason.

Stephanie informs Alex that the flowers are for Joy as Alex is going to pick up Kelsey, so she figured he could take them to her which he agrees to do. Stephanie wants Joy to know that she wishes her well and hopes she has a speedy recovery for all of their sakes.

Kayla tells Joy that she’s sorry as she just assumed Alex told her that Kelsey stayed with them. Joy says he didn’t but it’s fine and thanks Kayla for keeping an eye on her. Kayla says it was their pleasure and asks if she has any questions about the surgery. Joy says she has a million questions, but right now she’s wondering when she can go home. Kayla says the hope is in a day or two as it’s relatively quick. Joy says that’s if everything goes well. Kayla encourages that the success rate of the surgery is very high and most patients do very well. Joy asks what if she’s the exception.

Paulina asks Chanel if she has talked to Johnny about what she overheard him and Marlena talking about and the bad situation EJ put him in. Chanel confirms that she did and that Johnny told her it was about how he wasn’t able to tell anyone that Lexie was dying. Paulina questions buying that. Chanel responds that she trusts her husband and has faith that he would tell her if something was wrong. Paulina remarks that she had faith that he’d be here by now for her chemo and not at the office. Chanel argues that she told Johnny to go in to work since he took a lot of time off work when Olivia was born and she didn’t think it was fair for Theo to have to go right back to work after his mom died. Chanel urges Paulina to just give Johnny the benefit of the doubt, insisting that he makes her happy every day, and asks Paulina to get off his case. Paulina admits maybe she has been a little too hard on him.

Johnny argues that he’s not hiding anything from Theo and there’s nothing going on that he doesn’t know about. Theo asks if he’s sure, so Johnny questions who has trust issues now. Johnny says he just wanted to start pulling his own weight around here. Johnny tells Theo to just go ahead and take the meeting, adding that he and George should probably start to get to know each other more anyway which Theo agrees with. Johnny acknowledges that he gave Theo reason not to trust him with what happened with his mom. Theo assures that he doesn’t blame him for that as he was following Lexie’s orders, but if they are going to work together, he needs him to be upfront with him from the start. Johnny says of course, so Theo tells him they are good then. Theo tells Johnny to go be with Chanel as he’s got this covered. Johnny thanks him and then exits the office.

Alex and Stephanie continue kissing. Stephanie wishes she didn’t have to go to work. Alex encourages that she’s the boss and can be a couple hours late. Stephanie brings up her clients and having a lot of meetings. Stephanie reminds Alex that he has to get going too since Kayla can’t babysit Kelsey at the hospital forever. Alex jokes that she’s always the voice of reason. Alex says he will take the flowers to Joy while Stephanie repeats that she really does hope she gets better and gets home soon. Alex agrees, saying as much as he’s enjoyed having Kelsey, he misses their alone time a lot. Alex adds that once Joy is on the mend and they go back to shared custody, Stephanie can finally come home. They say they love each other as Alex then exits.

Kayla tells Joy that it’s normal to be anxious but encourages that she will be in excellent hands, so the surgery will go smoothly. Joy asks if she should sign an advanced directive if something does go wrong, noting that she’s heard a lot about that kind of thing from her dad. Kayla agrees to get that for her and says a nurse will be in to get her something to relax while she takes Kelsey back to Alex and says she’ll check back later. After Kayla exits, Joy grabs her phone and calls Melinda Trask, asking if she was able to do what she asked.

Roman states that as soon as Chad and EJ get back, they will finalize the date for Lexie’s memorial. Abe thanks him and says he should get going. Marlena says to give Theo her best as Abe exits. Marlena tells Roman that she feels so bad for Abe. Roman says Abe has been stoic, but he knows he’s struggling and is still in shock from what happened. Roman asks how Marlena is feeling. Marlena says she’s been busy at work, but worried about Belle. Roman asks if Belle ever figured out what the missing pawn from the chess set meant. Marlena says that she and Chad have sent her all the clues, hoping she would have some insight. Marlena adds that Roman might be able to help since he knew Stefano as long as she did. Roman says he’d be happy to help if he can. Marlena shows Roman a picture of what Belle found in the chess set. Roman says it doesn’t ring a bell to him while Marlena says she only has a very vague memory.

Alex visits Chanel at the hospital, which she calls a nice surprise. Alex says he just ran in to Paulina, who said she was starting chemo again, so he came to check on her. Alex brings flowers to Chanel and asks how she’s holding up. Chanel says she’s a little queasy and that Paulina went to get her saltines and ginger ale. Chanel says the hardest part is being away from her babies. Alex asks about Olivia. Chanel says they are so in love with her already, as she’s sure Alex is with Kelsey. Chanel asks if there’s any change between Joy and Stephanie. Alex says not yet, but he’s hoping there will be soon.

Marlena tells Roman about the Celtic knot appearing when Belle put it under a black light and that she remembers seeing it on a blanket in a very vague memory.

Alex visits Joy in the hospital and brings her the flowers. Joy says she’s really happy to see him. Alex tells her that the flowers are from Stephanie, who wanted to send her well wishes. Joy brings up Kayla coming to check on her earlier with Kelsey. Alex confirms Kelsey spent the night with Kayla and Steve since they offered to babysit. Joy questions Alex not thinking to tell her that. Alex apologizes and admits he should’ve let her known. Alex explains that he was trying to abide by her wishes since she doesn’t want Kelsey around Stephanie and he’s trying to find some time to be with his wife, so he’s just trying to make this work. Joy agrees and says she has a solution. Joy states that since Alex rejected her proposed custody agreement, she would like to offer a new one.

Marlena runs in to Johnny at the hospital and says she’s glad she ran in to him as they didn’t get to finish their conversation and asks if he has a minute now. Johnny says he doesn’t since Chanel has chemo and he promised her that he would be there and he’s already late. Marlena questions if he’s avoiding her. Johnny then admits that he has been, but he really does need to talk to somebody.

Stephanie goes to DiMera Enterprises office and talks to Theo about her PR ideas, but notices Theo is distracted and suggests they try this another time. Theo apologizes and says he’s here. Stephanie can’t blame him for not caring about PR strategy when he just lost his mom. Theo responds that it’s not the only thing on his mind. Stephanie asks if he wants to talk about it. Theo informs her that he doesn’t think Johnny is being transparent about work stuff. Theo says it’s the way Johnny was acting today at work. Theo warns that if Johnny is hiding something from him, then he cannot work with him or EJ anymore.

Marlena brings Johnny to her office and asks what’s going on. Johnny responds that he hates lying to people he loves. Marlena asks why he is then. Johnny states that it’s better for everyone. Marlena doesn’t believe that. Marlena argues that Johnny is already dealing with so much in Chanel’s illness and raising two children, so he shouldn’t have to handle this burden alone. Johnny declares that he’s sorry, but he can’t talk about this because the risk would be too great for him, his dad, and his family.

Joy knows Alex was hoping she’d change her mind about keeping Stephanie away from Kelsey. Alex asks if she has. Joy says that Stephanie is getting help for her PTSD and if she keeps that up, they can re-evaluate all of this in a year. Alex questions her wanting to keep his daughter away from his wife for an entire year and asks what she means by re-evaluate. Joy says they will re-evaluate if Stephanie has improved. Alex questions if Joy is the one who decides if she has. Joy argues that Stephanie almost put a bullet through her chest, so she thinks it’s more than reasonable to ask her to prove that it’s safe for their daughter to be in her presence. Joy remarks that it’s better than the next 18 years. Alex says that isn’t saying much. Joy is sorry he feels that way because it’s the best offer he’s going to get from her.

Marlena tells Johnny that he is not loyal to his father or the DiMeras, but to himself and the family he’s building with Chanel. Marlena adds that Chanel is a very smart woman and will begin to realize that he’s trying to hide something from her, if she hasn’t already. Johnny admits that she has. Marlena suggests being honest with her and asks what if EJ asked him to do something he’s not proud of. Johnny responds that it’s done and over and he’s already told EJ that he’s not going to help him like that ever again, so there’s nothing to be worried about.

Paulina walks through the town square and gets a phone call, saying it better be good as she said not to call unless there’s a literal fire to put out. Paulina then says she’ll be there in five minutes as she hangs up. Abe approaches and says he’s been thinking about her and asks how she’s doing. Paulina says she’s good and grateful for her blessings, especially her new grandchild. Abe asks if she has thought about him.

Stephanie tells Theo that she will send him the proposal tomorrow. Stephanie adds that if he needs someone to talk to about Johnny, his mom, or anything else, she’s there. Theo tells her the same and asks if she and Alex are good. Stephanie responds that they are better and had some alone time yesterday that was just what they needed. Theo says he’s glad to hear it as Stephanie then exits the office.

Joy reminds Alex that they still don’t have a signed agreement, so if anything happens to her in surgery, she wants to do what’s best for Kelsey. Joy adds that she still doesn’t feel like Kelsey is safe in Stephanie’s presence, so if they don’t have custody papers, she will have to make other arrangements and specify that she wants her sister Chloe to have full custody. Alex questions what she’s talking about and argues that she can’t do that as he would immediately contest it. Joy argues that it would take a long time. Joy complains that she’s about to have a surgery that could paralyze her and she just wants some peace of mind. Joy asks if that’s too much to ask for after everything she and Kelsey have been through.

Johnny joins Chanel in her hospital room, apologizing for being late and asks where Paulina is. Chanel says she had to run since they thought he would be there sooner. Johnny says he feels terrible and claims the thing with Theo ran a little long. Johnny asks how Chanel is. Chanel responds that she’s feeling much better now that he’s there.

Paulina assures Abe that she thinks about him as he suffered a terrible loss and her heart aches for him. Paulina asks how Theo is. Abe admits he’s struggling, but he’s back at work. Paulina apologizes for not sending a card or reaching out to him. Abe understands the situation is complicated and he knows it’s been very hurtful for her. Paulina gets a text from her office, wondering where she is, so she has to go and says goodbye to Abe as she walks away.

Stephanie runs in to Alex and Kelsey. Stephanie asks if he saw Joy and gave her the flowers. Alex confirms that he did and she said to say thanks and then they signed an amended custody agreement. Stephanie asks what the amendment was. Alex hands her his phone for her to read it.

Kayla joins Johnny and Chanel. Chanel brings up a friend saying medical marijuana helped with her chemo. Kayla confirms that she knows from a friend that it can be effective, but she’s not authorized to sign off on that, so she can recommend her to a reliable facility. Chanel feels it’s worth a try, so Kayla says she will get going on that. Chanel says she’s grateful to be in such great hands as Kayla exits. Chanel tells Johnny that she’s grateful her treatment is almost over and says that having Johnny by her side as been the main reason she’s gotten through it.

Kayla returns to Joy’s room and says she will be taken down to the operating room shortly. Joy admits she’s nervous, but ready to get this over with so she can be home with her daughter. Joy adds that she and Alex came to an agreement, so everything is signed, sealed, and delivered. Kayla says that’s great and she will see her after the operation later. Kayla advises her to get some rest. Joy adds that she really is grateful to her and Steve for taking such good care of Kelsey. Kayla says it was their pleasure as she then exits. Joy then grabs the flowers from Stephanie and dumps them in the trash can.

Stephanie questions Alex about this nightmare going on for another year. Alex says he knows and he’s sorry. Stephanie reads that she has to stay ten feet away from Kelsey or more if she is found in violation. Stephanie thought he was going to talk some sense in to Joy. Alex says he tried but Joy is holding all the cards and has her own lawyer with a new drawn up agreement where if he didn’t sign, she would give full custody to Chloe. Alex says he called Justin and he confirmed she could try and courts often tend to honor the mother’s wishes. Alex knows it sucks but they just have to get through this year. Stephanie calls it a year where she won’t get to know Kelsey and a year that they will be apart whenever he’s with Kelsey. Stephanie questions how he could agree to this. Alex argues that he tried the best he could and he thinks they can revisit it when she’s out of surgery and calmer. Stephanie doesn’t think she will be and decides she doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. Stephanie asks if he’s heading home. Alex responds that he has to stay until Joy is out of surgery. Stephanie gets that Kelsey has to be the first face Joy sees when she wakes up and tells Alex that she’ll be seeing him sometime as she walks off.

Marlena texts Belle, saying she hopes all is well and to text her about any progress. Marlena looks again at the photo of the Celtic knot, triggering another flashback to seeing it on a blanket and remembers that it was on Stefano’s island.

Tate works out in his gym until Holly arrives. Tate thought they weren’t meeting until later. Holly says she just needed to see him now and hopes that’s okay. Tate says that’s more than okay as they kiss.

Gabi meets Leo in the town square and asks if this is about Javi again. Leo assures that it’s not even though he’s always thinking about him, but they needed to speak because he has a lead on her counterfeit bag situation.

Chanel answers the door at home to find a baby gift from EJ.

EJ joins Chad and Belle at the airfield and announces he’s just in time. Chad asks what the hell he’s doing here. EJ responds with a big smile that he’s going to Italy with them, leaving Belle and Chad confused. EJ says he’ll be joining their flight so he can visit his daughter Sydney, so there’s no use in using the DiMera jet twice. Chad says a heads up would’ve been nice. EJ calls it a last minute decision and asks if it’s a problem. Belle tells him it’s fine as she and Chad don’t mind him being a third wheel. Chad thanks EJ for the champagne anyway, but EJ questions what he’s talking about and reveals he didn’t send any champagne, causing Belle to spit out her champagne on EJ.

Holly hugs Tate and says she’s been wanting to do this all day. Tate asks if she’s okay as she seems a bit shaken up. Tate asks her what’s wrong and to tell him what happened. Holly then reveals that some guy tried to rob her with a knife.

Leo reminds Gabi that he told her wanted to help her nail EJ. Leo reveals that he did some poking around the dark web for intel and found someone selling Gabi Chic knockoffs, so he bought a bunch of them and someone responded. Gabi asks if he knows who. Leo says it’s probably just some underling, so Gabi questions how this is helpful. Leo calls it their way in and explains that he’ll establish a relationship with them and work his way up the ladder until he gets to the supplier and then shut down the operation for good. Gabi gets excited and calls this amazing. Leo talks about always being up to sniffing out a good story, but admits there is one problem.

Johnny comments that it was nice of EJ to send a gift over and asks if they should open it. Chanel says maybe later and goes back to tending to Olivia. Johnny thought they were cool with EJ now but Chanel doesn’t respond. Johnny brings up how he said it might be nice to have some sort of relationship with him which Chanel said she was okay with. Chanel says that she meant a relationship with strict boundaries but what she sees is that Johnny and EJ are closer than they’ve been in a long time and closer than she’s comfortable with. Johnny guesses she doesn’t trust EJ. Chanel responds that she never has and never will, but the problem is she’s not sure she can trust Johnny.

Belle apologizes to EJ as she was surprised and concerned that she’s drinking something that came from an unknown source. Chad questions EJ since his name was on the card. EJ doesn’t know what to tell him since it wasn’t from him. EJ recommends Belle wash her mouth out just in case. Belle wonders if someone was trying to poison them as Chad takes a closer look at the bottle.

Gabi asks Leo what the problem is. Leo says problem is the wrong word and reveals he needs 20 to 25 thousand dollars so that they believe he’s a legit buyer. Gabi questions if the Spectator can’t bankroll him. Leo encourages her to think of it as an investment since she would make her money back a zillion times over once she stops the counterfeits. Gabi questions how she knows she can trust him. Leo declares that he would not betray her. Gabi decides at this point, she’ll try anything and agrees to make the transfer, joking that the bank of Gabi should start charging interest. Leo responds that her interest is stopping this counterfeit business. Gabi just hopes he knows what he’s doing.

Tate calls it crazy that some random guy tried to rob Holly. Holly admits that at first, she thought maybe EJ sent him, but the cops said he’s been busted before for purse snatching and mugging so she thinks he was just looking for an easy prey. Tate is relieved since the last thing they need is EJ targeting her again.

EJ questions what Chad is staring at on the champagne bottle. Chad explains that on the bottle of Dom Perignon, there are periods between the letters in Dom. Belle points out how that was also done in the Verdi program she was handed at the concert and calls it another clue. They wonder if D.O.M. could stand for something and go over all the clues they have thus far. EJ interrupts and asks them to clue him in on what the hell they are talking about.

Chanel tells Johnny that she knows he was just respecting Lexie’s wishes when he kept quiet about EJ hiding her in his house, so Johnny questions why Chanel said she can’t trust him. Chanel brings up that she asked him at the hospital if he was keeping any other secrets for EJ and he said no, but she guesses there’s something else that he’s not telling her.

EJ questions Chad not telling him that someone’s been giving them clues in real time. Chad says it has nothing to do with him. EJ disagrees since it comes from the chess set that Stefano left. Chad points out that it was left for John and Marlena. EJ feels given the history there, they are putting themselves at enormous risk and questions keeping it to themselves. Belle responds that they didn’t know who they could trust. Chad points out that Stefano has been gone a very long time, so someone is orchestrating this. EJ insists it wasn’t him and he knows nothing about this. Belle explains that they think it’s Dr. Rolf. EJ says that would make sense since no one was more dedicated to Stefano than Rolf and he may have been given instructions. Chad suggests EJ ask Dr. Rolf. EJ responds that he is unfortunately in the wind and no knows where he is. Chad argues that no one knows, except EJ.

Leo gives Gabi his word that he won’t blow this. Gabi responds that if his lead pans out, they could finally take down EJ because she has no doubt that he’s behind this. Leo worries that if EJ finds out they are digging in to this, killing them wouldn’t be out of the question. Leo adds that he’s done his research on these operations and handbags are usually just the tip of the iceberg. Leo points out that counterfeit business bring in lots of money used to fund other businesses. Gabi acknowledges that Rafe has mentioned that with trafficking. Leo remarks that they wouldn’t be just busting up a hand bag ring, but dismantling an entire criminal empire, so they have to be very careful.

Johnny asks Chanel where this is coming from. Chanel reveals that she overheard him talking to Marlena either and she said she knew he was being dishonest and that she felt like EJ put him in a bad situation, but Olivia started crying so she and Paulina interrupted. Chanel tells Johnny that now she wants answers. Chanel questions what EJ dragged him in to and what Johnny is covering up for him.

EJ insists that he hasn’t seen or heard from Dr. Rolf in months. Chad argues that he knows EJ knows how to reach him and tells him to call or text him. EJ says that’s not how this works as their method of communication is far more discrete. Belle tells EJ to just send out the Rolf signal. EJ responds that he will,, but there’s no telling when or if he will hear from him. EJ takes a look at the champagne bottle and states that “Deo Optimo Maximo” could be what D.O.M. stands for and that it means “to the greatest and best God”. Chad guesses that Stefano taught him that. Belle looks it up but finds out that there is a hotel in Rome called D.O.M. Chad excitedly tells Belle that sounds more like it and praises her work. Chad then suggests they stay there instead of the hotel they booked. EJ laughs them off as having no actual plan. Chad confirms they are working off little plan and guidance from Paul. EJ questions taking it straight to the ISA and calls it silly to take it that far. EJ asks if they even know what they are looking for. Belle responds that there is a pawn missing from the chess set. EJ says that can’t be an accident and must mean something. Belle tells EJ that if he’s so smart, he can tell them what it means.

Tate tells Holly that he’s so sorry about what happened to her and hopes the dirtbag that attacked her gets what he deserves. Holly is thankful that Lani was there. Tate asks if there were any other witnesses. Holly tells him about Mason from her sociology class showing up right after. Tate notes that he doesn’t know him. Holly says that he doesn’t want to because he’s a jerk. Tate asks what he did. Holly tells him that after she told him what happened, he completely ignored her and only checked on Lani, while earlier when Julie introduced them, he was incredibly rude to her. Tate questions what this guy’s deal is. Holly responds that she doesn’t even know him, but clearly he has a problem with her. Tate jokes that she can tell him that her boyfriend is a black belt and send him to the gym where he can show him a lesson on how to respect women. Holly tells Tate that she loves him as they kiss.

Leo tells Gabi that it’s common knowledge that DiMera Enterprises has been a front for illegal activity for decades. Gabi asks if he thinks it’s more than just his creepy experiments. Leo remarks that the FBI would know more than him. Gabi says if he’s suggesting she ask Rafe, he won’t tell her anything since he can’t comment on open investigations. Leo says they’ll have to find another way to dig up dirt on EJ then or find someone close to him that’s willing to takl.

EJ points out that the clues were left for John and Marlena, so it must be that Stefano wanted them to find a piece of John that’s missing or was stolen. Chad admits that’s a decent theory, but questions where to start. Belle feels they need something more specific to go on. EJ says if they want his help, he needs to know everything they know. Belle questions who said he was going to help them. EJ responds that it would be wise to let him in, since he knew Stefano better than them.

Chanel tells Johnny that she needs him now with surgery and another round of chemo coming up. Chanel says she needs to know that she can trust him and that there’s nothing going on behind her back and that he’s not going to choose his father over her and the kids. Johnny promises that he’s not doing anything else for his father and that she can always count on him to be there for her and their family.

Holly tells Tate that she wishes they could spend more time together like when they were in school, but she’s glad he’s doing what makes him happy. Tate offers to take her out for some late night tacos which Holly says she would love. Tate says he’s going to take a quick shower, so Holly decides to join him.

Chad tells EJ that they have told him everything they know. EJ wonders why they decided to go to Italy now. Belle says they looked at their schedules and this was the only time they could both go before the holidays. Chad says they decided to jump on the jet right after the Daddy Daughter Dance. EJ asks how that was. Chad says that Charlotte had a great time. EJ comments on missing so much with Sydney at that age. Chad points out that at least he can be with her now and he’s sure that she can’t wait to see her dad. EJ says he can’t wait to get there and he’s glad he was able to hitch a ride. EJ flashes back to his conversation with Rita, where he said he needed to know if the trip was putting Belle and Chad in danger. EJ then declares it to be the perfect time for him to be in Italy.

Leo tells Gabi that there has to be someone willing to dish on EJ. Gabi mentions that Gwen suggested reaching out to Chad. Leo calls that a great place to start. Gabi is unsure since she and Chad go back a long way and they are civil now, but she’s given him plenty of reason not to trust her over the years, so she doesn’t think he would respond well to her pumping him for information about his brother. Leo says he and Chad had major trust issues too and that Chad used to hate his guts, while now they are practically besties, so if he can win him over then anyone can.

Belle and Chad hope they get to see Sydney as well. EJ suggests they can have a late celebration of Sydney getting her MBA and graduating law school, adding that he’s so happy she is following in his footsteps. Belle jokes that hopefully she doesn’t follow in all of his footsteps. Chad then gets a call from Gabi, who tells him that she’s with Leo and he’s doing a big counterfeit story that seems like it might be a lot bigger than he thought as it seems like he’s only scratched the surface of DiMera’s illegal activity. Gabi asks if Chad could do a little digging and talk to EJ, adding that he’d be doing her a major solid. Chad informs her that he’s on his way to Europe with Belle so he can’t really help right now and hangs up. Belle asks what that was about. Chad says it was just something with the paper but it was nothing. EJ realizes he forgot to put Stefano’s ring back on and starts to panic. EJ tells them that he’s missing something. EJ then says he’s going to make a phone call before they head out as he hurries out of the room. Chad asks Belle if she’s sure she’s okay with EJ tagging along with them. Belle questions what choice they have.

Chanel tells Johnny that she believes him and they decide to open EJ’s gift. It turns out to be a cup with Olivia’s name engraved, matching Trey’s, along with a book. Chanel admits it was very thoughtful of EJ. Johnny points out that EJ does love their children. Chanel appreciates that EJ treats them both equally, even though one isn’t biological. Johnny says that Stefano always believed family went beyond blood and that EJ believes the same thing. Johnny declares that all of the children and grandchildren are united. Chanel then asks him what makes someone a true DiMera.

Johnny guesses what makes someone a DiMera is the same thing that makes someone a Dupri or a Carver, a shared set of morals. Chanel guesses for the DiMeras, loyalty is at the top of that list. Johnny insists that Chanel, Trey, and Olivia are his family. Chanel says that includes EJ and worries about Johnny being torn between them and what being a DiMera demands. Johnny promises that she doesn’t have to worry as he loves her and will always be loyal to her as they hug.

EJ calls Rita and says he’s about to fly to Italy with Belle and Chad. Rita asks how long he will be gone. EJ says he’s not sure yet and asks if she has seen his ring as he thinks he may have left it on the coffee table. Rita says she doesn’t see it but she will ask the staff to keep an eye out as she’s sure it will turn up somewhere. EJ instructs her to let him know the second that it does. Rita agrees to do so and tells him to enjoy his trip as they hang up. Rita then picks up the ring from the coffee table where EJ left it and puts it in her pocket.

Gabi returns to Leo and complains that Chad wouldn’t help her as he said he’s on his way to Italy and practically hung up on her. Leo encourages that he’ll talk to Chad when he gets back and they might not even need him as maybe he will get them exactly what they need.

Chad tells Belle that their plan is to pick EJ’s brain on the flight, ship him off to Sydney, and then take it from there. Belle adds that they can always reach out to EJ if they need him. Chad assures that they won’t, especially with the other activities they have planned. They go to kiss but EJ comes back and asks if they are ready to head out. Belle decides they should dump out the champagne.
