Yeah, I got her pajamas, her favorite stuffed animal, and, oh, “Little Women.” That’s her favorite book, so I thought I’d read it to her. Are you ready?

But first I wanted to address something that happened yesterday.

I want you to know that I saw you and Eric together at the hospital. I didn’t want to disturb you.

Why not?

Well, because I know how important Eric is in Holly’s life. He was her father for a time. And I know you need as much support as you can right now.

[sighs] It was quite unsettling for me to see you in his arms, and I–

[exhales heavily] You know… I just keep thinking, what’s Tate doing right now while I’m just sitting here breathing in this chocolate? Is he cold? Is he…hungry? Is he scared?

[sighs] Is someone gonna deck him again, give him a black eye, and take his lunch? I mean… this is killing me. This is totally killing me, Brady.

Well, they didn’t tell me who it was. And you’re here after visiting hours, so how did you get them to let you in?

OK, I called in a favor with the warden.

What kind of favor? Wait, forget it. I don’t want to– I don’t want to know. Forget I asked.

Even though I don’t know what you’re doing here at this hour. But if this is about Dimitri, nobody knows what happened to that guy. He just disappeared. And the rumor is, he’s in Supermax.

Well, it’s not about Dimitri. The reason I’m here tonight is because someone wants to talk to you.

[door clicks open]

God, and we thought having him away at boarding school was tough.

[chuckles]

I know. I keep thinking about how– how much I missed him, how much I was worrying. Wow. That was a walk in the park compared to this.

Oh, yeah, sure was. You know what? I’m thinking if I could engineer one of those jailbreaks, you know, like they do in the movies, I think I would do it.

[sly music] Don’t look at me that way. I’m not gonna do it. I wouldn’t even know where to start.

Are you kidding me? I wish you would. I would drive the getaway car.

[both chuckle]

I am not gonna listen to this.

Nicole, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything.

No. You shouldn’t have. EJ, how could you be jealous at a time like this? Honey… look, even you pointed out that Eric was Holly’s stepfather for a while. And you also pointed out that he’s still an important part of her life. So naturally, when Eric heard about Holly, he went to the hospital. And full disclosure because I do not want any secrets between us… Eric was there for Holly on Christmas morning when she was hungover and needed moral support.

You knew Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve?

Yes. When we came home Christmas morning, I went upstairs to check on her, and she felt awful. She had a headache, and she was nauseous, and she told me everything. How did you find out?

Johnny told me. He said that she drunk-dialed him and left a rather long, rather incoherent message. He was worried, obviously, and so he rushed back home to check on her.

And why didn’t you tell me that?

Well, I didn’t want to upset you. You were already at wits’ end. Why didn’t you tell me at Christmas?

[chuckles] Because Holly was embarrassed, and she didn’t want anyone to know.

But it was fine to tell Eric?

I didn’t tell Eric. Honey, Holly and I ran into him when we went on our walk Christmas morning. And she tried to hide the fact that she was hungover, but Eric, being a recovering alcoholic, could see right through it. So…he was just very kind to her, and he was not judgmental at all.

Hmm.

Oh, no. OK, what are you thinking? You suddenly got so worried.

[groans]

[sighs] I– I wasn’t sure that I was even going to bring this up, but you’re gonna find out sooner or later.

Find out what?

Rafe contacted me earlier and said that he has been questioning Holly’s high school friends. And they admitted that they have been dabbling in weed, and so has she.

[dramatic music]

Yeah, yeah, I heard of you. You’re the one who tried to shoot my cousin Hope when you were about to get married, no less.

I was brainwashed back then by Megan DiMera.

And you didn’t tell her that her husband was alive? You just forgot to tell her that? That just slipped your mind?

OK, Lucas, really, that’s all in the past, all right, and do I need to remind you that Harris was one of the people who rescued me from Dimitri’s boat? He actually saved my life, so…

So you trust this guy?

[sighs] Well, I– I’m with the Salem PD now. And I’m just exploring something on my own until I see if anything comes of it. But… I’m here tonight… to offer you a deal.

[sighs] We had so many talks, so many mornings when we definitely laid down the law about the dangers of drugs.

Yeah. And I know that you and I have lived apart for many years, Brady, but… We were always united on that front, weren’t we? Hey. Do you think he broke our rules?

I don’t know. Seems unlikely, but–

But that would explain why– why he said it at first and then he backed off, right? I mean, I hate– I hate to think it myself, but I–

I know. I know. I’ve thought it too. I’ve thought about it too. I even said it out loud to my dad. Bottom line is, hey, we weren’t there. We don’t know.

We weren’t there with him at school either, were we, causing trouble? I mean, maybe we shouldn’t have sent him to boarding school in the first place.

I know. I thought about that too. Maybe we shouldn’t have. I mean–I mean, he spent a lot of time away from us lately, especially me. I haven’t been ar– I mean, I called him. I visited. I had him here for summer on vacation. I thought I was close to him, I thought I knew who he was, and now I’m sitting here thinking, hey, Dad, maybe you didn’t know your son as well as you thought you did.

So… Holly’s friends told Rafe that she smoked weed.

They did.

[sighs] I know I– I shouldn’t be shocked, but… I am.

As am I. Her night of drinking also caught me by surprise as well, but I just chalked it up to a one-time thing.

Yeah, me too. Well, I mean… at least weed is legal here.

Not if you’re not yet .

[sighs] Well, now I can’t help but wonder– I mean, what if– I mean, would Holly go beyond that? Would she– would she take something more hard-core?

[groans]

Oh, you are awake.

Mom, hey.

Hi. Why are you taking aspirin before you get out of bed?

What are you thinking?

You know… that morning she was hungover, I saw her take pills that I thought could have been aspirin, but maybe not.

Nicole, Nicole, look at me. Let’s not jump to any dire conclusions, OK? Holly was hungover. The logical explanation is, she had a headache. She took aspirin for it.

[sighs]

And experimenting occasionally with marijuana does not make her an addict, OK?

OK, OK. You know, but we also don’t know if Tate’s really using drugs. He’s a good kid.

Why would you think that? Like, the only reason he is now living in Salem is because he was expelled from boarding school. How does that qualify him as a good kid?

Well, OK, but how did he get expelled, all right? Was it because of some dumb prank that went sideways? Kids do stupid things. I’m stating the obvious. And that just might include Holly. It’s just that– that doing drugs is just a lot worse than being stupid, isn’t it, because it’s illegal, and it’s dangerous.

[sighs] And I– I can’t believe I’m gonna say this… but maybe Holly isn’t as honest and innocent as I thought she was.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping]

You know, you’ve grown up so much. Feels like yesterday you were just a little girl. My little girl. I remember… the first time you called me Daddy. Holly, I just want to tell you how sorry I am. You know, when I left you and your mom to go to Africa, I just thought it was the right thing to do. But now I know that there is– there was nothing more important in this world than you are to me and being your dad.

[smooches]

Now I get a deal? What kind of deal?

Well, you may be or may not be aware of the drug problem in Salem. But a dealer was caught who was back in the game for less than hours after he was released from Statesville. And I questioned him. And I believe that whoever’s behind this drug epidemic is right here inside this prison. So I spoke to Mayor Price, and she gave me the green light to take action. That’s where you come in. I need your help getting intel on the inside.

You got to be out of your damn mind.

[sighs]

[dramatic music]

You ever hear the saying “snitches get stitches”? You’ve heard of that, right? Well, here it’s different. You don’t get stitches. You get broken bones. You get your skull stepped on. That’s what happens. When I was in the yard the other day, I saw somebody get shanked. They got shanked just for reporting contraband, for a freaking cell phone. They carried the guy out in a body bag.

I know it’s a lot to ask.

Yeah, no kidding.

Yeah, but I also know that you were an undercover prison informant before, Lucas, right, years ago? And that last year, you really helped John Black, Steve Johnson, Roman Brady with a certain Orpheus situation.

I thought that Orpheus killed my mother. And you don’t even know how many times I almost got popped and how many times I almost lost my life. I can’t, all right? You’re gonna have to fight the good fight against drugs on your own, OK? I am not your guy. My informant days are over.

OK, I get it. I understand your reservations. I do. But maybe you’ll change your mind if I tell you how I can help you.

How? How the hell can you help me?

If you’re willing to do what I ask you to do, I will get you out of here.

[chuckles] You know, to be honest, I never really understood the whole parenthood thing. You know, there’s no training or prep or degree. You just jump into it. How the hell did you know what to do?

Yeah, well, you don’t. But luckily, their brains aren’t as developed as ours, so they have no clue that we’re just tap-dancing our way through it.

[laughs]

We have no clue what we’re doing.

Makes sense. Thing is, Theresa has a teenager, and the teen brain is developed.

Debatable.

Yeah.

I mean, that’s different than what I’m dealing with. At least my kids still listen to me.

Do you get along with Theresa’s kid?

You know, we haven’t had a whole lot of interaction, really. I barely know him. I don’t even know if I’ll get the chance to now, given he’s in so much trouble.

Yeah, she must be a wreck.

She is a wreck. I’ve been trying to help her out as best I can. I’m trying to navigate the situation with her, but instead I totally blew it with her.

[sighs]

Brady, I totally understand what you’re feeling. I feel it too. Did I miss a sign or something? Could I have prevented this somehow, or…

[sighs] Is it just that Tate takes after me?

OK, hey, Theresa, don’t. No.

[sighs] No, I’m serious. I mean, I’m starting to feel like I’m responsible. Maybe I’m the one who failed our son.

[breathing heavily]

What are you thinking?

I just said I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Yeah, neither do I. But, EJ, Rafe said that Holly’s friends admitted to smoking pot, which is considered fairly benign these days, right? But if they were taking a more powerful drug, do you really think they would tell the cops? Do you really think Holly would tell us? No, no way.

No, no, I suppose not.

Oh.

[sighs] Now I’m realizing that it’s possible that I’ve deluded myself about Holly for a while now. You know, I thought that she was well-balanced and responsible and that if she was struggling or she had an issue that she would talk to me and I could get her the help she needed.

[sighs] EJ, I just–I never thought that she would resort to drugs. Oh, God, we got to get going. We have to get back to the hospital. I’ll meet you in the car.

[sighs] Dear God, could Tate have been telling the truth?

[sighs]

How’d you blow it with Theresa? What’d you do?

You know everything that went down with Tate and Holly, right?

Oh, yeah. It’s “The Spectator’s” biggest story right now. If that was Thomas and Charlotte, I’d be losing my mind.

Yeah, well, Theresa, she sure the hell is. And I’m trying to be supportive, but I guess I crossed a boundary of hers or whatever. She kicked me out of the room…

Hmm.

Told me she wanted to be alone with Brady so they could discuss their son.

Well, that must have been tough for you.

Yeah, but I mean, I get it, you know? Brady’s Tate’s dad. I understand that. I’m just trying to figure out what the hell my role is in all this. I’m the boyfriend of the woman with the teenager going through a terrible time. It’s new territory for me. I’m a little lost. I keep screwing things up.

Right. Well, why don’t you ask your dad for advice?

[scoffs]

Justin, I mean. I know he’s not your biological father, but he raised teenage boys.

Yeah, unfortunately, him and I aren’t on the best of terms at the moment either– also my fault.

How so?

[dramatic music]

[sighs] I guess it’s just because my whole life has been turned upside down. This whole Victor thing, him being my real dad… did a number on my head. I keep lashing out at Justin for no good reason. I don’t know, man, maybe it’s just in my blood to ruin all my relationships.

[sighs]

Theresa, look. Hey, hey, stop. It’s not your fault. Anything that happened with Tate and Holly that night is not your fault. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s probably mine. I’m the one that hasn’t been there– enough anyway, obviously.

Brady, that’s–

No, I should have– I should have been there more. I should have been able to help him, and I should’ve been able to– to be there more.

Tate knows how much you love him.

[scoffs]

He knows. He knows he can reach out to you anytime and you’ll be there for him.

[sighs] God, I just keep replaying that night over and over in my head.

And he was so excited to be on his first date with Holly. You know how hard he was crushing on her?

We were all just having fun, weren’t we?

I was a big old third wheel that night. I should’ve had my eye on Tate. I should’ve been watching Holly and Tate the whole time. Why wasn’t I doing that?

No. I should never, ever have let him go that night. I’m his mother. I’m his mother. He’s only . I mean, my poor baby! How did this go so wrong? How did we– how did this happen?

Like I said before, I’ve spoken to Mayor Price. Look, I wouldn’t even be here if I hadn’t been assured that the right people in the right places would guarantee your release.

It’s tempting. It is. I want nothing more than to get the hell out of this place. But I can’t risk my life doing it. I think I’m just gonna keep my head down, and I’m gonna be a good boy, and I’m gonna do my time. That’s it.

[sighs]

You’re a good man, and you’re a wonderful son.

[sighs] And as much as I miss you terribly and your children miss you terribly and all of us who love you miss you terribly, I understand your decision.

Nicole, I was just telling EJ that I was told that you and EJ went home for a break, so I– I thought I’d stay with Holly.

I know what I said, but you told me that everybody misses me. You told me that my family misses me, my kids miss me. What do you expect me to do? Of course I want to get out of here. I want my life back. So how about I just start out slow? All right, I’ll just dip my toe in a little, see what I can find out.

No! No, because I don’t want to see you be the next one who gets shanked and carried out in a body bag. This–we’re done here. OK, this was a huge mistake, because we’ve probably already put him in danger just by being here.

Yeah, OK, Kate. Is there any way you can tell the guard that we’re just ready to go? I want to give Lucas some tips on avoiding blowback because we were here tonight.

Nicole’s daughter, what about her?

She’s in a coma. She overdosed on New Year’s Eve, and she is fighting for her life, Lucas. I need you to help me save kids like her. So if you do this, I will do everything to protect you. You have my word. What do you say?

I’ll do it. But you got to promise me– you got to promise me that you’re gonna protect me. You have to guarantee that I get out of here once I get you the information you need.

Look, man, I get it. You know, when I found out that Stefano was my father, I was a grown man. You know, and I struggled with it for a long time, you know, dealing with… everything that comes with being a DiMera. You know, but eventually, I came to terms with it.

Yeah. I just don’t want to really think about all that right now. I just want to do right by Theresa, make sure that she’s good and do what I can to help.

What did the nurse say when you checked in?

Nicole… I think it might be time to discuss other options.

What do you mean?

I mentioned before that I made a few calls. The first one was to the clinic in Italy that brought me back from the brink of death. They were very encouraging when I spoke to them about Holly’s condition. And although they couldn’t promise– they couldn’t promise anything, I really do think it could help her. It’s an extraordinary facility, world-renowned.

OK, I appreciate the call, I do, but the doctors– the doctors have been great. They’ve done so much for her. And is–is taking her to Italy really the answer? What if something happens to her while she’s traveling?

We’ll take every precaution. I’ll hire an expert physician who will accompany us for the entire trip. They will never leave her side. You just say the word, and I’ll make the arrangements.

OK, I’ll consider it. I just want to talk to Kayla first.

Eric… I just wanted to thank you for being there for Holly and Nicole. It’s very much appreciated.

They both deserve all the support they can get.

Yeah, they–they worked miracles on EJ there and brought him back from the brink of death, as he said. So we’re hoping they can do the same for Holly.

I knew it. I knew that security guard was following me up and down the aisles. So I should have expected that after I checked out that the store owner and that security dirtbag was gonna pull me aside and demand to search my purse.

I did. But I left my badge in my jacket in my car. And so I said, let me go get it.

And the store owner gets up in my face and says, you’re not going anywhere.

Oh, my God. Honey, I’m sorry. Well, it’s a good thing the unis showed up and they recognized you, right?

No, but if things go the way we hope, in a few days, she will be getting treatment at a world-renowned hospital in Italy.

Well, Eric didn’t mention that to me.

It’s because I didn’t tell him.

Sloan, I’m her mother. Of course I’m going with her.

No, that’s–what I meant was that I’m glad Holly’s receiving treatment, because Eric and I have been praying every day for her recovery.

Well, I mean, I wasn’t in the past, but… pregnancy, the miscarriage, and now… having our prayers answered with this beautiful baby boy, all that changed me. It made me more religious.

Right. Well, I can see how it would. So I take it Jude is with Eric?

Yeah, he is. I’m just out picking up a few things. We’re having Eric’s mom and stepfather over for dinner tonight, which we have been trying to do for a while. But I’ve kind of been putting it off.

Yeah, yeah, well, you’ve been a little busy.

Yeah, it’s more than that. Truth is, I’m a little intimidated by his mother. She’s just– she’s so perfect, you know?

I get it. Marlena was my mother-in-law too. But may I suggest that you pour yourself a large glass of wine before they get there, because if you start the night out wired, it’s only gonna go downhill from there.

You know, you don’t have to do this today if you’re not feeling up to it. You can have the deputy mayor step in.

Today of all days, I am doing this. Mm-mm, my mother marched with Dr. King as a young woman, and I wouldn’t be here today without her…

You know, some people might say that Dr. King would want me to shrug off what happened to me today and just push forward. But I don’t think that’s what he meant at all. I think that when you see injustice that you need to do something.

Anything like that ever happen to you?

Are you kidding? Just the other day, I was walking in the square, and this lady, she was sitting on a bench by herself, and she had her purse next to her. She sees me walking, and she takes her purse and she puts it on her lap.

You’re not really shocked.

I mean, yeah, I kind of am. I feel like I’ve spent a lot of time with you, and I’ve just never seen it.

Yeah, that’s because you weren’t looking. But it happened everywhere– here, in London, in Italy.

Italy?

Yeah. You remember how people were looking at us because we were an interracial couple? When Mama was a kid, it would have been illegal for us to get married in many places in this country.

[sighs] Well… I’m sure as hell glad that we’re not back there.

Yeah. We’ve come a long way. But we can’t pretend like we don’t still have a long way to go.

A big glass of wine, check. Actually, I bought two bottles. So check and check.

Yeah, well, as you know, Eric doesn’t drink. And his parents will probably only have a glass, so…

More for me.

[sighs] Look, Marlena knows that she comes off as intimidating, you know? And she also seems very put together. But she’s just–she’s a real human with real problems. I mean, you know Marlena’s daughter Sami, Eric’s twin? I mean, she was a holy terror for years. She still is, in my opinion.

Yeah, Eric’s mentioned Sami once or twice.

Well, did he also mention that Marlena had an affair with John and it sent Sami off the deep end when she was a teenager?

Mm-mm. I can’t even imagine Marlena having an affair.

Yeah, well, you see? She’s not perfect, just like the rest of us.

[soft music] And I’ve found that if you ask Marlena for advice up front, you know, she feels useful, and you don’t feel judged, and then the rest of the night will just be smooth sailing.

I have to admit– I’m embarrassed to admit it, but there’s so much in here that I had no idea about. I mean, how have I never heard of this guy Bayard Rustin? I mean, he helped organize the March on Washington. An openly gay African American man in the s? I mean, this person is just incredibly brave, especially for that time.

Yeah, he was a true hero. And the reason you’ve never heard of him is that back then, a lot of people didn’t want to link together civil rights and gay rights and any other kind of equal rights as being a part of the same movement. And sadly, that’s still the case today. As if there’s only so much equality to go around.

Yeah. Well, I am really impressed that you’ve done the research, Leo, and brought all of this to light. In fact, I think, given the serious nature of the column, we should publish this under your own name and not the Lady Whistleblower byline.

Assuming we can publish it at all.

Asks for my driver’s license and another form of ID and then asks me to put my phone number on it.

You know, I was just thinking, back when I was in high school, I was in the lunchroom, and this random girl, without even asking if she could touch my hair, she just comes up and starts touching my hair.

And she’s like, oh, it’s so soft. And then when I went home, I told my mom about it. And then she gave me this whole lecture about microaggressions and how I should have stood up for myself. I mean, I was just trying to eat my lunch. And now I’ve worked up an appetite. I want to order the full breakfast menu.

‘Cause when I first got engaged to my first husband, I wanted so badly for my dad to approve, because my mom sure didn’t. Yeah, she wasn’t exactly thrilled that I was marrying a white Jewish guy.

Hmm. Well, she got over it, I hope.

Sort of. But he disappeared on me, so it was all moot.

Well, you know, Chanel and I were just watching this documentary recently about the Lovings. She was Black. He was white. And so the state of Virginia refused to recognize their marriage. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which struck down all state laws banning interracial marriage, allowing us to marry whoever we wanted.

Mm, not whoever we wanted because not same-sex marriages. And, you know, being a Black woman who’s also bi, I just stopped labeling myself altogether, because it’s just exhausting being so many types of other.

Hmm.

Right. But choosing to not acknowledge race or gender, I mean, that’s pretty exhausting too, right?

Yeah.

I mean, especially if that’s who you are.

[sighs]

You know, I can’t believe that we’ve never talked about this before.

Yeah, well, I’m really glad that we’re talking about it now.

[chuckles] You have the power and responsibility to improve your community in some way, big or small. May we continue to live in Dr. King’s spirit every day. Now, we’re– oh, a lot of us, we’re familiar with many of his words. So I’ve chosen to begin with a quote from that great writer James Baldwin.

What do you mean you haven’t been generous? And not only have you been understanding about Eric spending time with me and Holly. Oh, my God, I mean, Sloan, you– you let me off the hook when I kidnapped your son.

You know, right after I told you to stay away from Jude, I saw you having lunch with Eric and Holly, looking like the happy family you used to be, all for the world to see. And, you know, that was pretty upsetting to me.

Would be for me too. But what did Eric say when you mentioned it to him?

I didn’t tell him. I don’t know why I didn’t tell him. But now I’m glad that he had that time with Holly.

[sniffles] He’ll always love her… just like he’ll always love you. And I’ll just have to learn to live with that. I should follow up with Leo. Thank you again, Nicole, for the advice.

Like, sometimes I create them special cakes and things like that that makes them feel special. Like the other day, there was this lady, and she was in hospice, and she had been a beekeeper, and so I made her these little bumblebee cookies. And when she saw them, she was so excited. And the look on her face, it was just like, she was so happy. She was so grateful.

Yeah, and then even with my mom, you know, she’s all about giving back, and she’s the mayor, but then she also does this podcast. And she’s actually recording an episode this morning. I can’t wait to hear it when I get home.

Yeah, but I gave orders for him to be placed in isolation. OK, well, one of the guards must have made a mistake.

No, the mistake was charging my kid as an adult. That’s why he was in this danger in the first place. And this is all on EJ too.

All right. Well, I’m gonna go down there and find out what happened.

Like I said, Lucas is not the problem. I’m hoping he can be a part of the solution.

Justin, thank God you’re here. Tate got beat up this morning.

Rafe went to go find out what he could, but will you tell me when I can get my son transferred out of that hellhole, please?

I do have some news.

She was–she was very close with my children, and–and they loved her. And I think she’s a wonderful person, and I care about her a lot, so that’s not really too hard to understand, is it?

Hey, yes, that’s what I’m thinking. I want him to help us nail this bastard who’s trafficking opiates from inside Statesville.

May I offer my take on that?

Well, after my decades with the ISA and my years on the force, I know this is a very high-risk ask, Detective.

I will–I will not deny that.

And I also know that the odds are not in Lucas’ favor to carry this out.

No, of course they’re not. You know, and it may be the brave and noble thing to fearlessly rat out the son of a bitch who’s selling drugs in Statesville, but what good does it do you to be brave and good if you’re dead, OK? So my answer to your ask is most definitely no. Most definitely, I will not put my son in danger.

What time is our meeting with the mayor?

OK. That gives us just about enough time to review our strategy.

All right, well, she agreed to meet because she wants to discuss her plans for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Right, and with her as Salem’s first female Black mayor, that’s especially significant.

Yup, and then we go over some of the unique challenges that she’s faced.

Yes, and the recent advances that have been made with regard to race relations, female empowerment.

And at some point, we’re gonna have to segue into what’s gonna be done about the drug epidemic.

Right, and with it hitting so close to home now.

You mean Holly Jonas?

Man, I just remember watching her and her date on the dance floor on New Year’s Eve. They were just having such a great time, you know? And then just like that, life is shattered.

Hers and Tate’s.

Yeah. And I can’t help thinking, like, if– if Steph and I hadn’t left the party early or if my investigator’s brain had been working… Anyway.

Then what? What? I mean–

Her parents didn’t even know anything was wrong.

So even if you had, what could you have possibly done?

Probably nothing.

Probably nothing. It’s just that feeling, you know, of… wishing you could have helped, even if– even if it’s too late, even if– I don’t know. It’s not a particularly rational thought.

Alex, I did not let it happen, OK? As we all know, Tate pled guilty. That didn’t help. Nor did his getting expelled from boarding school.

But how is that even admissible? Him being expelled, how did the judge even know about that?

Come on, Theresa, how could the judge not know? Social media.

So–social media? How the hell did it get out to social media? The first thing you should have done was made sure that his name was erased from the internet immediately.

It’s not that simple. It takes money, for one thing–

Which would have never been a problem.

And time, for another thing, more time than we had–

And the money could have bought the precious time that we needed. You blew it, Justin. You know, Theresa and Brady, they just keep saying all of this falls on EJ, but it really doesn’t. It’s not EJ’s fault. It’s not Rafe’s fault. It’s not anybody else’s fault but yours.

Kate, look, I get that you’re worried about Lucas’ safety. I understand that. But if we do not get him involved, if we do not bust who’s responsible for this drug crisis, it’s just gonna keep going on and on. More people are gonna get hooked. More people will die.

Harris, you are absolutely right about that. That is very true. We were heartbroken when we heard about Holly.

Yes, of course we were, and when I think about what Nicole’s going through, especially after losing her newborn son, I feel for her. I mean, I really do. But this is my son that we’re talking about, and I’m going to protect him.

[phone rings] Oh, OK, this is Billie, my daughter. I have to take it.

Well, you heard the woman. She is a lioness when it comes to her kids.

I understand, and I do respect that, but I may be able to get her to reconsider.

Well, you are the embodiment of the dream that Dr. King talked about so eloquently. A successful Black businesswoman from Miami, now the mayor of Salem, following in the esteemed footsteps of the first Black man to become mayor of Salem.

My brilliant Abraham. As we all know, just two generations ago, this would have all been impossible. Oh, but, you know, we’ve come a long way indeed. But with what’s being reported all over the country, I think that we backslid somewhat. That’s why it is so very important to keep Dr. King’s dream alive.

Yeah, we couldn’t agree more. That’s why “The Spectator” is actually gonna be one of the main sponsors for the Day of Service and why we’re gonna dedicate the next issue to covering the event…

I don’t understand this. How can Tate’s appeal be revoked, Justin?

Hey, how is my son? Did you figure out why he wasn’t in solitary?

Yeah, it was a mistake, which has been rectified. He’s been moved to another cell, one of the newer cells with security cameras. And I personally saw to it that he was moved there, and I brought him some ice, by the way, and talked to the on-duty guards there and put the fear of God in them. So rest assured, he will not be in danger anymore.

Oh, thank God.

Yeah. He’s a brave kid. He wanted me to let you guys know that he’s doing OK. I’m gonna have one of the medics from here go down there periodically and check in on him.

All right, Harris, let me get this straight. If Lucas helps you, he will be rewarded?

I could get him released from prison.

[chuckles] Roman, we both know how the system works. Busting a drug operation this big would make national news. It would make him a hero. Along with his good behavior…

Harris, I’m not sure you’re aware of this, but Lucas kidnapped my daughter Sami. That’s his crime. That’s why he’s in Statesville. so I got to admit, I am somewhat ambivalent about him getting released.

I can understand that. But Kate is your wife, and she wants nothing more than her son to be free.

That is true, and I love my wife with all my heart, and Lucas did get us to Orpheus. So I’ll tell you what. I will work on getting over my ambivalence if Kate changes her mind about getting Lucas involved in this.

[dramatic music]

That, you will have to ask her.

Do I have any thoughts on the growing drug problem? Well, let me put it this way. If we had an hour, five hours, ten, I could not get through expressing them all.

I’m sure.

Oh, yes, indeed. Oh, OK. Well, here goes. Fellow citizens of our wonderful city of Salem, when I was growing up in the ‘s and ‘s, of course there were drugs around. You had your hippies with their weed and the less risk-averse with their coke and LSD. And let me tell you, a lot of my contemporaries really got screwed up in the pursuit of fun.

[coughs] Oh, sorry. And sadly, you also had homeless addicts and wayward kids from the projects who tried to escape reality the only way they could: using drugs. And, well, that’s going on today, as we–

[coughs] As we all know.

[coughs] And it’s still–

[coughs] Still all going on.

[sighs] What I’m trying to say is…

[coughs] From what I’ve read, drugs have been a problem for centuries.

[coughs] The difference now is–

[coughs] From what I’ve also read is that they’re more potent now, especially opioids, which can be times stronger than heroin. times. And now with this increased potency of all drugs, well–

[coughing] Overdosing is what’s causing people to die.

[coughs] And my heart just aches for all those who have been affected, which is why I’m using every resource available to me to warn the public of the danger of these drugs.

[coughing] And by the time, I get through, ladies and gentlemen, there will not be a single soul in Salem who can say that they have not been informed and enlightened.

Alex, you made yourself clear from the very beginning that you didn’t think that I was ruthless or aggressive enough to be Tate’s attorney, which is unfair, to say the least. And I’m not sure why I have to defend myself to you since you’re not even Tate’s parent. But I have been as ruthless as humanly possible to get Tate out of that adult jail. I have done everything I can, period.

Right, well, obviously, everything you can isn’t enough.

[scoffs] OK, well, I’m sorry you feel that way, Alex. I will submit a motion to be removed from this case.

Yeah, I’m sorry as well, but that works for me.

No, Brady, I am out. I am not gonna work on this case when I am being berated by my son. Excuse me.

Go on, Alex, call the other lawyer.

Hold on. Hold on. Why don’t we take a deep breath here and think about, I don’t know, acting like grown-ups here for a second?

Oh, I’m being very grown up about this, Brady. I speak to my legal counsel every single morning, and I should be hearing from him any minute now. I’m gonna tell him the news that it’s his case now, and it can be a much more lucrative one for him, provided he takes care of business.

Theresa, is this what you want? You want our kid to be represented by some stranger?

No, no, no, no. This is not a stranger, Brady. This is an old pal of mine, and the guy happens to be a shark defense attorney. I’ve already brought him up to speed on Tate’s case. All I got to do is give him the latest.

[phone rings] There you go. This is him right now. Hey, Rodney. So I got some news for you.

Well, Billie is great. She just wanted to wish us happy New Year.

Well, I hope she had a good one too. Did you happen to speak to her about any of this, about Harris wanting Lucas’ help?

[scoffs] No. No, I didn’t, because I don’t need anyone else’s opinion. I already made up my mind, and very sorry if I wasted your time, Detective.

Kate, I think Harris might have a way to make his request more appealing.

More appealing? Well, what would that be?

How would you like to get Lucas out of prison?

How would you do that? I mean, why would you do that?

I would do that to save lives. And from because of what I know and what I’ve heard and knowing you, Kate, I know your son is a decent human being. He’s not a danger to society, and he’s already been punished enough.

Well, all of that is completely true, OK? I’m gonna–I’m going to have to think about it, OK? And you are going to have to promise me that you could really do that.

I will get confirmation on that. And I understand this is a big decision. I will let you talk. I’ll be waiting for your call. Thank you.

OK. Just give it to me straight, all right? How dangerous would this be for Lucas?

Well, to state the obvious, that depends on how or whether Lucas can pull this off.

[scoffs] Well, that’s a really big question, isn’t it? Even the crime that he did commit, he couldn’t help but having that come to light, could he, so how is he gonna pull this off?

Well, as I told Harris, Lucas was able to get John and Steve and me to Orpheus. He is very smart. I have complete confidence in him, Kate.

[sighs] That’s very touching. It is. But if he gets caught, he could die.

In my opinion, that is very unlikely. What is more likely is that Lucas gets his life back.

Oh, I’m sorry, guys.

Yeah. Are you sure you’re OK?

Mm. Mm. I’m fine. I’m fine. It’s just something I’m getting over. Oh, and in case you’re worried about your own sweet selves, it’s not contagious. But I do think maybe I should just rest my voice, especially with the big celebration tomorrow. Maybe we can continue this later.

Well, as you just observed, Alex not only insulted me, but he persuaded Theresa that I’m a total incompetent. Do you really want to put either one of those two in his line of fire?

No. No, I don’t, but here’s where I stand. Tate is my son, right? And I know–I know that you are his best option. I was passive about it in there, but I’m done with that. I’m not gonna be that way anymore.

Brady, let it lie. Tate’s well-being should be your main priority. I don’t want to be a distraction.

You’re not a distraction. I’m not gonna let it lie, not when it comes to my son. I know what’s best for him, and I know you are it. Alex, he needs to butt out. He needs to shut up. Tate is my son. He’s not his son. I’m gonna call the shots here.

If anything happens to Lucas because I encouraged this…

Katie, Katie, I truly believe that Lucas can pull this off. I trust that he is clever enough and will be strongly motivated to make this happen without jeopardizing his own safety. And as much as I’ve gone back and forth on Harris, I trust him on this too. So let’s not go to the negative here. Let’s think about the very strong positive. Lucas can regain his freedom. He can come home to his family, be with his kids, his grandkids.

Alex. Alex, here’s the deal. This is my son’s case, OK? My son. I’m gonna make the decisions about this, and I’ve decided I want Justin on the lead. What–what is going– did I miss something?

[sniffles]

I don’t really care about what this lawyer friend of yours in Chicago has to say.

Well, you’re gonna care when you hear this. He said there’s nothing more he can do other than what Justin has already done.

He just got off the phone with his lawyer friend in Chicago and confirmed that he couldn’t be any more effective than– than you are and what you’re doing right now, which confirms that you’re doing everything you can for my son. So I want you to continue what you’re doing. I want you to rescind your motion to remove yourself.

Is that what you want, Theresa?

Fine. I will rescind my motion and stay on the case. However… I will no longer be reprimanded by you, Alex, or treated disrespectfully in any way. I busted my ass to try and help Tate, so I will continue on as his attorney but only if my efforts are appreciated and acknowledged.
