I think this hypothyroid thing might be a blessing in disguise.

Well, my new endocrinologist was telling me about this anti-inflammatory diet that he thought I should try. I looked it up, and would you believe? It’s supposed to help improve memory.

Wait, I thought Abe’s doctors said they already tried everything.
Mm-hmm, well, every treatment that western medicine has to offer, yes, but nothing holistic like acupuncture, homeopathy, or herbal medicines. And not only might those remedies possibly help, I read that bizarre events could also be a stimulus to help jog someone’s memory.
Well, it is a good thing that Abe lives in Salem then because there are enough bizarre events happening in this town.

Nicole, Holly is young and strong. If anyone can defy the odds, it’s your daughter. I mean, just like I did, remember? My God, I was– I was shot in the head. And although recovery was difficult, I’m % fine now, as you can see. Holly, she is just so full of life and spirit, determination. She’s going to beat this.
I pray that you’re right, EJ. I’ve tried to be positive and optimistic and to believe that God is looking out for my daughter. But the thing is, he didn’t look out for our son. So I’m starting to lose faith, EJ. I’m having trouble believing in miracles right now.

Maybe you could get Tate’s bail reinstated or, you know, push his case back into the juvenile system.
OK, I’ll try. I’ll try. I don’t know how receptive she’s going to be given the circumstances, but I– buddy, I just– I don’t want to give you false hope here.

I haven’t told anyone this, but when we spread our son’s ashes outside, I said a prayer. And it’s been a long time since I prayed. And look what happened. Holly overdosed and almost died and is in a coma. So if I ever had any doubt then, it is very clear now how God feels about me.
No. No. Nicole, no. This has nothing to do with how God feels about you, about any of us. You know that. Tragedies happen, and none of us knows why, but it certainly has nothing to do with God punishing us, OK? When tragedies befall us, all we can try and do is remain as strong as we can and to try and focus as best we can on what we still have to be grateful for.
EJ, that is easier said than done.

No. Do you think I need permission to cry? That’s all I’ve been doing, is crying. And what I really wanted to say, EJ, is I want to scream. I want to scream. I want to know why this is happening. I want to know why Holly is suffering. I want to know why we lost our baby. I just– I want to scream.

Well, now, a healthy diet is nothing to poo-poo about. Lots of vegetables, protein, fiber. Did you know that salmon is a superfood? Vitamins and omega- fatty acids, good for the heart and brain! Chanel, could you give me a little time alone with Abe please? I want to tell him about some of those alternative options that I’ve been reading about.

Oh, well, now, it’s just the two of us. I wanted to talk to you about more than just adding good brain food to your diet. See, now, I’ve come across some research about some alternative treatments for memory loss, and–

Well, I’ve come across some research about dealing with amnesia. And, well, it gave me an idea. And I thought we should test it out this morning.

Well, I’ll show you a video of our wedding, and maybe it can jog something up there in that beautiful noggin of yours. But well, now, if it’s too much pressure, I understand.
I know that that was a very bad day for Lani. And I don’t know if– I don’t know if it would remind me of anything, but I would like to watch our wedding ceremony. I know it must have been one of the happiest days of my life.

Nic, there’s no one– no one that feels worse about what’s going on than Tate. I don’t know what you’ve been told, and I don’t mean to pour this on you, but I’m feeling a little desperate myself because I have a son that’s insisting he knew nothing about the drugs, he knew nothing about them. And he– he would never hurt her, never. But my son is in a jail cell right now, and he got beaten by a grown man because EJ refuses to– he revoked his bail, and he will not charge him as a minor. He wants to charge him as an adult for possession of illegal drugs, Nic.
Tate was beat up?
He was beaten by a grown man. He was attacked. We’ve been friends a long time. And I hate to ask this of you, but is there any way you can just get him to reason a little bit because I know you’re scared to death of losing your little girl. And I hope to God she pulls through. But I am also very afraid of losing my little boy.

I didn’t think I’d see it past a day, let alone two years. You’re not going to be in here that long. But my point is, is that I came out so much stronger. And I know it really, really, really sucks for you to be in here right now. But you are going to come out of this stronger too. Do you know why? I know that EJ feels helpless about Holly’s condition.

I know Tate said they were Holly’s drugs. Do you believe that to be true?
Nic, I can’t be sure. There’s no way of knowing.
I’ve been thinking you confessed to protecting Tate. So you wouldn’t do that if you didn’t think he was innocent, right?
No, no, no, Nic. To be honest with you, I didn’t give a damn whether he was guilty or not guilty at that point. I just knew that EJ was targeting him, and I wanted to deflect his wrath on me. That was my parental instinct that kicked in. All that said, though, yeah, I believe my son is telling the truth.
So you think Holly is the one using drugs and EJ and I could have helped her, but we were just oblivious?
No. Nicole, Holly has had a difficult life thus far. I mean, it’s been unstable. She didn’t get to know her father at all. Your life, personal life, romantic life, just like mine, for dear God has been erratic and up and down, and that can affect a kid. We know as parents that these kids, they can put things right under our noses, and we can easily overlook them. So yes, it’s possible that Holly could have resorted to something like that.
Damn you, Brady. Damn you. How dare you talk about my daughter like that?

He thinks Tate is telling the truth, that the drugs Holly used were hers.
Of course he would believe that. Son of a bitch. I never should have let him in the door.
I don’t know who I’m madder at, Brady, or Tate, or the dealers, or myself. Because if Brady is right about this, then I’m the one at fault here. This is my fault.
No, no. Nicole, this is not your fault. Do you hear me? Brady is just trying to convince you that it’s Holly’s fault, so he can get his son off the hook, and that is not going to happen.
EJ, I just– I feel so helpless. Because if I lose Holly, then I don’t–
Hey, look at me. Look at me. As I told you before, I am living proof that a hopeless case can turn around for the better.
But it took years for you to recover.
That was years ago. There have been extraordinary advances in modern medicine since then– you know that. And I promise you Holly is going to get the best care in the world. I will do everything in my power to make sure she recovers and that Tate Black pays for what he has done. I swear on the soul of my father.
Oh, no, don’t tell me.
I’m sorry, I could not convince Nicole to do anything. Out of desperation, I made a call to Mayor Price and demanded that she fire EJ, but she said that he’s still operating within the confines of the law. And until he crosses a line, she can’t interfere.
Well, he always crosses the line. He always does.
I know, and he will. And when he does, we’ll get him.
