I was also wondering what you were doing at the hospital. You seemed kind of mysterious when we ran into each other.

I didn’t mean to be. I was actually just seeing my therapist.

Yeah. Dr. Evans. She’s just really good about accommodating my schedule.

Marlena is your shrink?

I see her from time to time, yeah. What were you doing at the hospital?

[clears throat] My mom sent me over to go talk to Aunt Kayla. Actually, now that I think about it, it was kind of like a therapy session, too, but free.

Nice. What’d you talk to Auntie about?

What’d you talk to Dr. Evans about?

Well, actually, I did go to the pub tonight. I saw you there with your friends.

I’m all talked out. So why don’t we call a moratorium on talking about all the feelings and the goals and the regrets and all that heavy stuff, you know, and why don’t we– why don’t we do something really mindless and distracting?

You know, in our previous lives, when we used to meet in the shadows, we were usually on assignment and not always on the same side. [dramatic music]

And you’re telling me that you still don’t remember anything from that time? You have no memories at all?

Come on, partner. Why do you keep asking me that? You know as well as I do, those memories have been wiped. [both sigh] Listen, I really try not to make myself crazy struggling to get them back or trying to fill in those blanks.

I know. I know that must be frustrating as hell. But I got to say, I envy you.

And why would that be?

OK. So truth or dare, you know, the rules are really simple. We ask each other questions, and we have to answer honestly.

But… if somebody decides they don’t want to tell the truth, they have to say…

Dare, yes. And then that person is given a task or an action to which they must comply. And if we play the game properly, that task should be a little bit embarrassing, you know, to make the person squirm and blush and feel like a total idiot.

OK, I got it I. I–actually, making people squirm or feel idiotic is very high on my list of worthwhile activities, so…

I know.

That’s why I think this is gonna be a really good game for us. And plus, it can lead to some really enlightening conversation.

Oh, see, I’m also all for lightning– lightning? Enlightening conversations. So who’s going first?

Easy. Lindsay Lohan. I watched “Mean Girls,” like, , times. I would literally delude myself to think that I would actually, like, get a date with her and then eventually marry her and have, like, a family.

Pretty painful crush, to be honest, because eventually I realized that Lindsay is just unattainable.

Uh-huh. Right, I can imagine that was really painful. I’m so sorry. You see, this is where it gets enlightening, because now I know that you liked “Mean Girls” right from the start.

I mean, what are you doing here anyway? Because Lucas is missing. He’s missing from prison. And if anything has happened to him, that’s on you. Do you understand me? Where is my son?

It’s a relief. I’ve been having this running monologue in my head for so long that getting it out there feels– But judging from your face– are you upset?

Not upset. I just–I don’t know what to say.

Yeah. Well, at the risk of making an even bigger fool of myself than I already have, I will just say that… Steph, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me. And when you’re near me, my world feels right. I came to Salem to find you because… I can’t live without you. And I would give anything, anything, to get back to what we had.

Yeah, yeah, I did, because I wanted them to meet you. And I’ve been talking about you mostly in the context of us working together, but… Everett, my feelings for you are complicated.

When you disappeared– and, yes, I know now that you were in an accident, but I didn’t know it then. And so I was heartbroken. Shattered, really. And when I was able to heal at least somewhat from that hurt, I was determined to move on with my life, to get over you.

And did you? Did you… stop loving me? And now that I’m back and you know that I never left you by choice, are those feelings just gone?

You know, I think about Abe and how he’s lost his memory of the past. And I know that’s obviously really tough. But I don’t know if it’s worse not being able to remember or not being able to forget.

And when we got out of Statesville, we drove around for a couple hours, made multiple stops to make sure we weren’t followed. Now, look, nobody knows about this. Not even the commissioner knows that Lucas is here. So this has to stay between us. No one can find out.

Sorry it went down this way. I’m sorry that you have to harbor the man who kidnapped your daughter.

You see, once I got over the shock of your disappearance, I tormented myself for months, trying to figure out what I did to make you leave. I blamed myself, thought it had to be because I got on your nerves or because I wasn’t enough for you, not smart enough, not witty enough, not charming enough, not good enough in bed.

I’m so glad… you’re finally opening up about all this, because it helps me understand, you know, the depth of the pain that you went through when I disappeared that day, albeit not by choice. But still, I need to say to you, I am so sorry that I hurt you, so sorry I hurt the most important person in my life, who I loved with all my heart, more than anything, and still do. Everett, before we talk about the future and since we’re both opening up about what it was like for us after your accident, in the time that we were apart, what I don’t understand is why nobody went looking for you, why your family and colleagues didn’t send out a search party when you went missing.

Yeah. I mean, I didn’t understand that either… at first. But from what I was able to understand once I was mostly recovered, I wasn’t on any assignments at the time, so… when I didn’t respond to emails or phone calls, I think– I think my boss just must have figured I’d– I’d moved on.

OK, but what about your family? They didn’t try to find you?

Well… I lost my mom when I was a kid, as you know, and… my dad is my dad. He’s a–he’s a drunk, you know.

Yeah. No, yeah, I know. I understand why your family didn’t try to find you. I shouldn’t have asked.

No, it’s–it’s a reasonable question, you know. And family could mean cousins, aunts, uncles, you know, but I’m– I’m not that close with them. You know, they’re on the East Coast and…

Right. Well, it all makes sense.

Another thing I was wondering is, when you finally woke up from that coma, were you as lucid as you are now?

---

No. I wasn’t. I mean, my first diagnosis was retrograde amnesia, which is… inability to access memories or information from before an accident or an injury or a disease.

So, you know, all they could tell me was to– to give it time. Give it time.

---

I was really lucky, you know? Eventually my memories did start to come back.

Gradually? All at once?

Gradually.

---

The first thing that I remember with any clarity… was you.

And when that happened, when I saw you in my mind’s eye…

my whole world got brighter, warmer, and I felt stronger, more resilient because… I had purpose. And that was to get back to you. That was my goal. My only goal was to get back to you and tell you that you’re everything to me, everything.

You know, when Harris told me that he couldn’t make the deal to get you out of prison, I mean, I really panicked. Now you’re here. You’re here, safe and sound.

I thought transport was part of the deal. Was it some kind of ruse? Did you–what, did you kidnap me, Detective Michaels?

No, but I would have if I had to.

Well, what exactly did you do?

I called in every favor that I had. I kept pressuring the state attorney general. I kept reminding him how important it was to have our main witness alive if we were ever gonna bring a case against Clyde Weston. And then finally, the AG saw the light, signed off on the order to have Lucas in a safe-house situation. But when the threat’s eliminated, Lucas will have to return to Statesville to serve the rest of his sentence.

OK, then. I guess we’ll just be happy with what we have now, then.

Yeah, I guess we have to be happy. We have no choice, do we?

Oh, yeah, I can tell you. It’s the Bistro actually whose business was badly hurt by that drug raid. They hired me to try to do some damage control.

Ah, well, the reason I was held up was also because of the drug epidemic plaguing town. Hey, how about this, no shop talk tonight, hmm? Everyone OK with that?

Mm-hmm.

All right. So how about we just limit all that talk and we keep it to embarrassing personal stuff?

Ooh, I’m all for that. But, Rafe, I don’t know, this might be a little sexist, but given your gender, you may have a problem with that.

Yeah. You know what? He probably wants to talk about macho stuff like cars and sports and how he pitched, like, a lot of no-hitters back in the ‘s in Little League.

OK. First of all, I did throw many a no-hitter when I was in Little League, even some in high school, actually, yeah. But, you know, that aside, Stephanie, yes, you are correct, it was a little sexist, because I am perfectly comfortable talking about my feelings, even personal embarrassing ones.

It was good. It was just exhausting, but rewarding.

So the usual way you describe your days at the hospital?

Right, it’s just I didn’t think we were having it, because I forgot the haggis.

But luckily for us, steak pie is a perfectly acceptable and traditional substitute.

[exhales] Steph. Listen, I just want to say something just so that there isn’t any doubt about it at all, OK? I really like living here in Salem, I do. I really like my job a lot. But more than any of it, I love… being your shoulder and your friend. And I just want you to know that there won’t be any pressure from me to be anything more. I swear. No pressure. So how did our little girl do at “The Spectator”? You took her there today, right?

Yeah, she was a perfect angel and mostly just slept in her stroller. How was your day at work outside of exhausting and rewarding?

[chuckles] I mean, nothing out of the ordinary. I did my rounds. And then I worked on my charts.

May I ask, when was the last time you asked for a raise, Sarah?

Um…not lately. Why?

I’m just wondering. I mean, you work such long hours, you work so hard, and it’s mentally, physically, emotionally exhausting from what you tell me. It just seems that you should be getting paid handsomely.

I mean, I’m fine with my salary.

Maybe you shouldn’t be.

You and Theresa? You told me during our last session that you were determined not to get romantically involved with her.

Yeah, I was– I was totally fine with us just being roommates.

Mm-hmm.

Then roommates with benefits. Anyway, Theresa recently had a relapse or a slip, I guess, it’s what it’s called when it’s unplanned. It was like a one-time thing, right?

Yes, yes, well, that is what it’s called. I’m just I’m sorry to hear that she had a slip. But no, I had not heard about that.

OK, well, then Brady obviously didn’t tell you. But the two of us, we took care of her together for the first few hours when she was coming down. And it was really hard for both of us to see her like that.

I’m sure it was very hard.

Anyway, I wanted to be like the hero. I wanted to help. And in reality, I just felt like I was in the way, not just because Brady has all this experience with addiction, but him and Theresa have all this history. They have a child together. Anyway, after Brady left and Theresa was finally sober, she made this rash decision, or at least I thought it was rash, to just go back to California. So naturally, I got upset. And I wanted to clear my head. So I went for a run. By the time I got back, she was all packed up. She said she needed to be with her mom and get away from Salem at least for a little while. And she booked a red-eye ticket. She was supposed to leave tonight.

Oh, well, I assume she didn’t go.

No, she didn’t. I talked her into staying. Dr. Evans, I couldn’t let her leave. That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. That’s what’s scaring the hell out of me.

So Mom filled you in, huh?

Well, she told me that you had a slip but that you were determined for it not to happen again.

I am, although I know that those words can ring hollow coming from an addict.

Well, they don’t ring hollow with me, Theresa, because I know, we all know– the people who care about you– that if you had a slip you must have been in some serious pain.

[tense music] * * Your mom told me also that you’ve decided not to go back to California.

Yeah. I’m sure she was pretty disappointed, huh?

Well, no, I actually got the sense that she’s just concerned about you and wants the best for you. She doesn’t understand why you need to stay in Salem. I mean, she knows that you can’t see Tate for another month, right? So what is it? Why did you decide not to go back?

[sighs] Alex. * *

OK, let’s make a toast. Let’s see, to not needing any shoulders to cry on.

So I– I shouldn’t be fine with my current salary?

Well, maybe I’m a little bit biased. I just–I have a feeling that you’re a stellar employee. I mean, you’re always going above and beyond. And you should be getting paid accordingly. What? What is it? What are you thinking?

No. I, um– this talk, I guess, is making me a little uncomfortable just because our most recent problems were because we were broke and you were willing to do dishonorable things to make us not broke. And despite the fact that you don’t think that I’m being paid enough, I really do make a decent living. So Victoria will always be taken care of.

I suppose you’re right.

And now you have “The Spectator.” So we’ll both be contributing equally to the raising and educating of our daughter.

Of course. And I didn’t mean to express any doubt about that. But as I said, I’m only going to make a living now honorably, respectably. I have a beautiful little daughter for whom I need to set a good example. It’s more important to me than anything, Sarah. I hope you believe that.

I do.

So you need to have Theresa stay in Salem. Why is that scaring you?

[tense music]

I think maybe because I’ve just never really felt like that before. You know, I’ve been crazy about a woman before, Stephanie, for one, but it was different.

Different in what way?

It was just, you know, it was more like I was wanting her, not so much needing her. Does that make sense?

It does.

I don’t know, maybe it’s because Theresa she’s like, you know, she’s made a lot of mistakes in her life. She’s struggled with addiction. She’s flawed. In other words, she’s like me. I just feel like I can totally be myself around her. I don’t know, it’s just something about her. You know, whether she’s happy or sad or angry or indecisive or silly or annoying, I just– I just want to be around her. I– I… I don’t know, when I can’t be around her, I can’t get her out of my head. So then I end up wondering, where the hell is she? What is she doing? Who is she with? How is she feeling?

Yeah. I think I understand what you’re feeling.

You do?

I do. I think you do too. I think you’re in love.

So Alex is the reason you decide to stay?

Yeah, he is. He persuaded me that he and I are so alike that yeah, we’re both screwups. I mean, God knows that I am, but that we are– we’re both really self-aware.

OK.

Yeah. And unlike people who aren’t self-aware, we actually know when we’re backsliding. So we can nip it in the bud, you know, and become better people. And he insisted that he and I try to do that together.

Sounds like a plan.

But, you know, Aunt Kayla, Brady and I have been through so much with Tate. And when I was strung out, he– Brady, he really made me feel safe. And in a way that only addicts can understand, you know, he– for a moment, I felt really close to him. But then when Alex took me in his arms and he persuaded me to stay in Salem, that’s when I realized that he is what I want. He’s what I need.

So you’re in love with Alex, is that what you’re saying?

[sighs] Yeah, I suppose I am. Do you disapprove?

Disapprove? I mean, why would I?

Because most people look at him as an egotistical womanizer, you know, this shallow guy who’s only out for himself.

Well, Theresa, first off, I don’t know Alex that well. But I’m of the opinion that people are a work in progress. So I believe if a guy meets the right woman, he could become less egotistical, less shallow. And actually with that woman, he might be able to make a serious commitment.

Yeah. I mean, stranger things have happened, right?

Absolutely.

You know, when I first got involved with Alex, I was the one who was really shallow. It was really just using him to try and get Brady jealous. And then when I realized that that didn’t work, I looked at Alex as a distraction, you know, somebody to keep my mind off of Brady, a companion for when I was lonely. But God, I didn’t think I would actually develop real feelings for him. And now I feel so guilty.

Guilty? For what?

Because I am shallower than shallow. I am the kind of person who’s willing to screw up somebody’s life six days from Sunday just to get what she wants.

I think you are being hard on yourself.

I know. I’m ashamed. I’m ashamed of what I’ve done. Alex deserves better

Theresa, what have you done?

In love, wow, sounds so serious, mature.

Is this new for you, feeling this way?

Oh, yeah, this is definitely new for me. It’s not like I haven’t been crazy for a woman before, like I said, I have. But being crazy about somebody is a little different than being in love with somebody, isn’t it?

Well, it’s hard to say. People express their feelings differently, you know. It’s very subjective. But from what you’re telling me about your feelings, it sounds like there’s a real depth to your feelings for Theresa.

Yeah, I mean, I just can’t help but feel like if I am having these feelings that I need to act on them. And not just like the physical sense, but I’m thinking…

[light piano music] Should I ask her to marry me?

Marry you?

[gasps] Alex, I can’t tell you what to do. But from what you’ve been saying to me, these feelings are all very, very new for you. And that’s fine. That’s just fine. But I think you need to just take this very slowly and see what develops and see if it turns into something that feels like marriage.

What if I wait I could lose her? I don’t want to lose her. Dr. Evans, I can’t.

Oh, I didn’t tell you. Earlier before I put her to bed, I was reading her “Goodnight Moon.” And I know she’s way too young to actually understand any of it, but she was looking at me so intently. It was as if she couldn’t wait to hear what happened at the end.

Or maybe she really is very precocious and brilliant and totally understood you.

But she really reminded me of you, though, this just intense concentration.

[laughs] When she smiles, though, she reminds me of you, because she does have your smile. It’s a lovely smile by the way.

Well, you have a lovely smile too, Sarah, although you look lovely whatever you’re doing, whether you’re smiling or frowning or concentrating intensely or especially when you’re holding our daughter in your arms.

You know, when I think about everything that we went through with Mickey, the loss and the grief, I just think how blessed we are that we have this perfect, healthy child.

I feel blessed too, that that perfect, healthy child is ours, a product of our love at the time.

Yeah, at the time.

And now in the present, I’m just so terribly grateful that, well, we’re getting to know each other again in a different way.

Yeah, in a better way.

So is that why your marriage ended, because your ex cheated on you?

Well, that was the main reason, but it was how I found out.

And how was that?

One day I was checking our credit card bill, and I found a really big charge from a jewelry store. And since he hadn’t bought me any jewelry in months, well, you get the idea.

I do. God, that must have been so painful seeing that charge.

It was. And when I confronted him about it, he was furious with me for being suspicious. I mean, we had horrible fight after that. And we’ve been in many fights before, but nothing like that. And I knew it was over.

Oh, what did I miss?

Oh, nothing. I was just talking about my ex. Nothing you need to hear.

Well, just so you know, the Venetian glass was imported from Murano, and the blue diamond is actually an extremely rare one. I had to have the DiMera jewelry consultant help me buy it at auction.

Well, the DiMeras have a lot of weddings. Now, if I were a name dropper, which I’m not, I would tell you that this beauty may have once graced the hand of Elizabeth Taylor.

You’re kidding.

Yeah. I had the stone removed, set in Venetian glass, not only as a reminder of our time in Italy, but also I wanted to make sure that this ring was as unique and special as you are.

That is probably the most romantic thing that I’ve ever heard. And isn’t this just so perfect? I mean, here we are, in front of this tree with a plaque of one of Salem’s founding couples.

There has to be a clear cut delineation, Chad. You know that as well as I do. And God knows we’ve seen what selective reporting has done to this country.

OK, do you know what? I didn’t– I didn’t cover anything up, all right? So spare me the lecture. And you know what? This wasn’t even really about loyalty, all right? Stefan had some–had some pretty valid points, all right? So why should his business be damaged, possibly irrevocably, when there were no drugs found at the raid?

Can I tell you why?

OK, I will tell you why. Because it was part of the narrative! The Bistro was one of three locations raided that night, the only one that bore no fruit. Let the readers make up their own minds based on the full story.

Yeah. Yeah, I know, and I really hope that you can help them with that.

Yeah, I’m going to do my best to try to counter all the negative press with good PR. It’s just– it’s just so terrible what this is doing to their business.

The mayor’s office is onboard. We’re going to cover both the charity angle and the fun and games of it all. I’m pretty confident it’ll be successful, very beneficial for the paper.

Well, I was at dinner at Steph’s the other night and I sort of got recruited into helping plan it.

You had dinner with Stephanie?

I have to get away from everything that has caused me to–to relapse, away from everything that’s making me unclear about what I want and what I need.

So I saw in my daily report that you had pulled Theresa Donovan’s credit card records. Can you explain why?

Yes, I can. Brady called and Theresa was missing, so I wanted to help him find her in case she was in trouble. So I got information from those records and found out that she checked into a local motel. And when I found her, she was totally strung out. Brady and Alex came and I had them deal with her, and then I left. I’m sorry I didn’t let you know. I was just so exhausted, and I really just wanted to keep everything on the down-low.

I do. Yeah, you mentioned they’re short-staffed, and you’re covering some shifts.

Yeah, I didn’t step up last year. So I have to get back into rotation.

No problem. I’ve got Victoria covered. Although, you should know I’m going to take her into the office later today when she wakes up.

I didn’t know that you had a meeting.

I don’t. I just want to go in there and see what’s happening.

I mean, you trust Chad, don’t you? Especially now that you have that new editor-in-chief, it seems like all of your bases are covered.

Yeah. I mean, it’s not that I don’t trust Chad. He seems to be doing a bang-up job. It’s just–I don’t know. When you’re that close to everything, sometimes you miss the small things that help the bottom line.

I mean, like off-label K-cups and generic ink cartridges.

I wouldn’t quite go that far, but there’s always staffing issues, expense accounts, payments to sources.

Now, you remember what happened last time you were solely focused on profits.

Yes, I remember all too well. And I’m sure this will sound hollow because I’ve said it so many times before and gone back on my word. But Sarah, I am a new me.

[soft dramatic music]

That doesn’t sound hollow to me at all.

Thanks for that. For taking me at my word when you have absolutely no reason to. But I’m more motivated than ever to be a stand-up person. I mean, having a sweet little girl in my life, and you, it makes me want to be a better person and to succeed. So I’m just looking to grow a legitimate business in legitimate ways.

Yeah. Were they willing to be quoted?

I mean, I still need to do a little more digging, but I’m close. I really think it’s our responsibility to bust this thing wide open.

Yeah. Well, with what you do and as good as you are, I’m sure we can.

Right. And I know that business-wise, it can be very damaging since when people hear the word raid, they tend to stay away.

Yeah, in droves, in our case.

So the question is, how do we get everybody to forget, or even not give a damn that there was a raid in the first place, right? How do we erase that from their minds?

Well, I put together some ideas after you called, Ava.

OK, I’m eager to hear.

Right. So first, we need to immediately add photos from New Year’s Eve to the website. I assume you have some from that night.

We do. What about the rave reviews?

You know what? Why don’t I just write some fake ones? You know, people do that a lot.

They do, but I don’t like that idea. I think some really good photos should suffice of people having a really good time, celebrating, maybe some photos of the food you were serving?

I got pictures of the buffet table.

Great. And we need to make sure that there is no more talk of the raid, anywhere. If any comments or posts pop up, I can delete them or contact whoever posted them on your behalf and let them know the indignity that you’ve suffered. As well as maybe mention that you’re considering a lawsuit against the Salem PD.

Now, that is an interesting idea.

So as soon as we get rolling, just let me know as soon as possible what kind of promotions you’re up for. Basically, whatever you’re willing or able to give away. And don’t forget to comp something for your regulars– you know, a drink, a dessert, the whole check even, so that they feel a part of the Bistro family.

And what exactly are they giving me?

Pain meds, I think. And Mama, I could tell that you didn’t really like Dr. Siegel. So maybe we could look into getting you another endocrinologist and getting a second opinion.

This is not about opinion, baby. Those pathology reports, they don’t lie. And I forgive Dr. Siegel for not being warm and fuzzy. Her only obligation is to be honest with her patients and to offer the best treatments available.

Well, she could have been a bit more compassionate.

True. But right now, I want to concentrate on what I have to do to get well. And just so you both know, I pretty much expected I was going to get this diagnosis. And because I’ve been doing a lot of reading on all the different types of cancers and all the amazing, you know, advanced treatments, I’m ready to do whatever I have to do to get cured.

And we are ready to do whatever we have to do to help you through this.

Yeah, I know that. I know that. And I admit that before I knew what was actually ailing me, why I’d been having all these symptoms I’ve been experiencing, I was– well, as you both know. very scared.

[soft dramatic music] I’m hoping against hope that there was nothing seriously wrong with me, hoping that it wasn’t cancer. But now that I know that it is, well, strangely enough, um… I’m actually feeling stronger and hopeful. And I am so very grateful to know that I have my wonderful daughter and husband by my side.

Well, what makes up for you being highly annoying and often obnoxious is that you, unlike some people, don’t squander “The Spectator’s” money. You actually bring it in.

As you know, my date on New Year’s Eve is the editor-in-chief of “The Spectator.”

Oh, he was your date on New Year’s Eve.

Oh, yeah. Everett and I have a history in Seattle, actually.

And that was before Chad, right?

Right. And Chad and I ended things very amicably, fortunately. So “The Spectator” is another one of my clients with contract still in hand. And since Chad and I are on good terms, and Everett has a fair amount of clout there, that definitely helps us to get some positive publicity out there for the Bistro.

Right. And since Chad, co-owner of “The Spectator,” is my brother, and we are also on good terms, last time I checked, I’m going to go have a chat with him. I’m also going to stop by and see Gabi, so you two finish brainstorming. And I’ll catch up with you when I’m done.

Thank you. So Dr. Siegel is known for her medical skills, not so much her interpersonal ones.

Well, yeah. Well, medical skills are the most important, obviously. And she was fine, very direct. She didn’t try to sugarcoat anything.

No, no, no. Yeah, she would never do that.

Well, that’s fine. That’s fine with me because I don’t want anyone feeling sorry for me– trying to paint a rosy picture when–when it’s not so rosy.

No, I agree. I think sugarcoating a patient’s diagnosis is really unfair to them. However, I do feel like when you’re telling somebody that they have a serious illness, that you should be there. I think it’s our job as physicians. So I just wanted to let you know that Dr. Evans or any other psychiatrist in this hospital will be more than happy to help you through this.

Oh, thank you, Sarah. And I will keep that in mind.

Yes, because I do know that hearing the word cancer is just very upsetting itself, even if we catch it early, and it’s treatable or– it’s treatable and curable, as it is in your case.

Right, right. And as I told my daughter and Abe, I’ve been reading articles about all the new advances in cancer treatment and as well as the way it can affect a person psychologically.

Right. And I’m glad that you’re educating yourself, but just make sure that the websites you’re checking out are reputable.

Oh, I have been careful about that. But thank you for the warning. And I’ll understand I’ll be needing surgery.

You will. Yes, a thyroidectomy. And I’m sure you know from your research that you can live a very full, long life without a thyroid, as long as you take the medication to replace the hormones that your body is no longer producing.

Oh, yeah, yeah, right, right. Yeah, I read that. I read that too. But actually, I’m glad I’m going to need surgery. I mean, that sounds a lot better than that word, inoperable, right?

Yes, it does. It does. And there may be some unforeseen complications. But other than that, it is a pretty straightforward procedure.

And those complications, just what might they be, Sarah?

[suspenseful music]

So the nodule that we biopsied was cancerous, as you know, but the good news is it didn’t spread to any of your lymph nodes.

Right, right. Yeah, I was told that too.

And the symptoms that you’re experiencing, they’re normal– the localized pain, coughing, sore throat, difficulty swallowing– which is why your doctor prescribed you a pain medication to be used as needed. And then, we will schedule surgery to have that nodule removed.

Oh, well, I do hope that it happens soon. I want to get this done as quickly as possible.

Oh, of course, yes. I believe we have time this week.

How long will she have to be in the hospital?

I just–a day or two at the most. And then, once you’ve healed from surgery, your doctor will decide if you need any additional treatment.

Oh, right. And one more thing that I did not look up online, what is the survival rate for thyroid cancer?

Oh, it’s a very curable, very treatable type of cancer. And I believe the five-year survival rate is over %.

[sighs] I like those odds!

But just the slightest mention of a raid at the Bistro kills us. I mean, we’re already dealing with the fallout with dozens of canceled reservations.

There is no proof of guilt on our part. My God, Chad, you– you think I’m lying to you?

Honestly, Stefan, I don’t know what to believe.

OK. Well, maybe I can remind you of a situation that you were in that’s similar, even maybe more dire.

That’s completely irrelevant.

How is that irrelevant? I mean, come on. You were completely innocent, yet that almost ruined your life. So if anybody understands what it’s like to be vilified unjustly, it’s you.

He got the pulp beat out of him by Weston’s flunkies, who they believe he ratted on. So believe me when I say Lucas is going to want to eliminate Weston by any means necessary.

Maggie, you have got to know that this man is not here in Salem to live a peaceful existence and reminisce with you about your late husband. He’s here to take advantage of your kindness and your generosity, and he has to be stopped. I will not stand by and watch you get hurt.

Tell me, Detective, are you able to have a life these days, or is your caseload in Salem pretty all-consuming?

Yeah. My caseload is all-consuming… thanks to you and your drug ring.

[chuckles] My drug ring? Good Lord, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a strong proponent of drug abstinence and sobriety, and have been ever since I joined the program a few years back. I could recite the serenity prayer for you, if you’d like me to.

I would like you to go to hell, you lying son of a bitch.

You know, I know things blew up between us, but we still had some good times together, didn’t we?

Steve, I appreciate your concern about me, and you know I consider you and Kayla my dear friends. But I’m also insulted nonetheless that you would think I was so naive and such a poor judge of character that I wouldn’t know if someone was taking advantage of me.

I didn’t mean to insult you, Maggie. It’s the last thing I want to do. I care about you.

As do I. You saved my life. You’ve been more than a friend to me, and I can’t thank you enough, Maggie.

Will you cut the crap?

Steve.

Maggie, this man is dangerous, and he’s conning you. Listen, I know you’re smart, and I know that you are generally a good judge of character. But you’re in a vulnerable place right now.

Steve, I don’t want to hear it. Not that I haven’t heard it before when I first got involved with Victor. Everyone said that I was being naive and that I was going to get hurt. And just like back then, and, fortunately, as it turned out, I didn’t listen, and I’m not listening now.

Sorry, Doc. I didn’t mean to scare you.

It’s okay. After all these years, you would think I would be more accustomed to your sudden moves.

Whoa. You have a short fuse, don’t you, Detective? I wouldn’t think that would serve you well in your line of work.

It serves me just fine.

Huh. I thought it was important to be, you know, cool and collected when confronting dangerous criminal types. Not that I’m one of those myself, you know. Not anymore. I am truly reformed. A model prisoner is what they say. So much so that my main mission right now is just to set a good example for my fellow inmates. Because, you know, I’m what you might call a people person.

So I’ve heard.

I bet you have. And that trait makes me real good at assessing who’s got potential to thrive in here and, you know, in general, really. And, Detective, in spite of your short fuse, or maybe because of it– I’m not sure– I got a good feeling about you. So I’d like to offer you my feedback on Salem’s current state of affairs, if you’d like to hear it.

[tense music]

All right, I’m listening.

Good. Now, what you might see as a crisis, I see as an opportunity to grow a substantial enterprise. Hypothetically speaking, of course. And if I were to venture into a particular line of business, you, Detective, would be exactly the kind of individual that I’d be seeking to employ.

Alex. Alex, listen to me. This–this was not Brady. It was me who kissed him. It was the drugs, I swear. It was just a momentary lapse that I had. The kiss meant nothing.

Oh, it sure as hell didn’t look like nothing.

But, Alex, I know what it looks like. She’s telling the truth, all right? And I don’t take advantage of people in pain, all right?

It’s true. Alex, it’s true. Brady is not at fault here. I made a really poor decision last night, and that just led to a really poor decision again right now. But you– you have to believe me. I want to be with you. Alex, I– I just want to be with you. Only you.

Let’s not compare this guy to Victor, okay?

Fine. Let’s compare him to you. You worked for Victor on multiple occasions over the years. And was your behavior always ethical?

I was a different man back then.

And that’s my point, Steve. You saw the error in your ways, and you turned your life around yourself. You found the love of your life, and you settled down and had a family. And just like then– well, you know Victor. He changed his ways too. And even though you think ill of Konstantin– which I know you do– why can’t you give him the benefit of the doubt? Why can’t you believe that he can change too? And he has changed.

Okay. I became a better man thanks to Kayla. Victor became a better man thanks to you and your relationship with him. But let’s talk about the present and what’s going on right now with this lowlife.

Would you please stop with the name-calling?

He has an agenda, Maggie. He has an agenda. He didn’t come to Salem randomly. He came here to take advantage of you.

You’re entitled to your opinion, Steve. I can assure you that Konstantin has been nothing but open and honest with me, and I– and I believe, your accusations notwithstanding, he has a good heart. And aside from all that, whatever happens or doesn’t happen between him and me, that’s frankly none of your business.

[soft dramatic music]

Okay. Maggie, there’s so many people in this town who care deeply about you, and I’m one of them. Now, all I can say right now is please, please be careful.

In this situation that we are hypothesizing about, it wouldn’t all be easy. You know what I mean?

I wouldn’t expect it to be.

If I decided I wanted to hire someone like you with certain life experiences, you would have to be fully vetted, of course. And the thing of it is, Detective, I don’t think you’d make the cut. +- Please, Alex, you have to forgive me. I was just caught up in the moment, and Brady was here. And because he’s the father of my son, I just– I needed, I don’t know, comforting. And so I just kissed him. It was stupid, and I was wrong. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It was unfair– it was unfair to him, and it was unfair to you. And it was unfair to me. But it wasn’t Brady. It was me. It was my fault, and it won’t happen again.

You know, when I was high… I was a completely different person. There was just no more pain, and… I was just hurting so much because of Tate. I’ve failed our son. I threw away years of sobriety.

Theresa, Theresa, no, you didn’t. You fell. You took a fall, but it’s– it’s about how you pick yourself up, remember? You’re going to recover, and you’re going to do it for your–for your family. And for Tate. But mostly, you’re going to do it for you. You hear me?

Okay. I’m going to go to a meeting.

I’m going to do that. I’m going to go to a meeting every day. I will get a sponsor. I will devote myself % to becoming sober and to becoming a better person. I will not let you and Tate down again, I promise.

Well, I’m sorry about all this. Steve means well. His concern comes from a good place. Konstantin, I can’t help but feel that this harassment of you is not going to stop because my friends are being overly protective and overly concerned. I appreciate it, but I resent it. Because I don’t like being treated like a naive child.

I can handle it. Like I told Steve, I’ve been subjected to this before when I first got involved with Victor. But it didn’t faze me all that much.

Yeah, I suppose I do. And I know you do as well. But you being continually harassed this way– it worries me. For you. I’m beginning to wonder if Salem is the best place for you.

And I must confess, I’ve been amusing myself a little, watching you play along, trying to squeeze some intel out of me, thinking that I’d be foolish enough to trust you. But here’s the thing. You’re the fool. So why don’t you just go on back to Salem, and you’re going to find out how powerless you really are.

Do not push me, Weston. I know it’s you. I know you’re behind the drugs that are killing people in Salem, and I’m not going to stop until I find the proof to shut your ass down and hold you accountable!

I’d be really careful about making threats and promises you can’t keep. I mean, look what happened to poor Lucas Horton.

God, I can’t believe I was so weak. I’m so ashamed.

Theresa, don’t. You know that beating yourself up is not helpful. You have been through hell lately.

I just succumbed to my addiction. How is that not weak?

Because when– we’re not going to characterize it as weak. What you’re going to do– what you are going to do is recommit to sobriety, all right? That’s what you’re going to do. And you’re going to show yourself some compassion. And, yes, you gotta get to those meetings, okay?

I will. And, well, like I said, I will. And I know that I shouldn’t care about what people think. It shouldn’t matter to me, or at least it should not matter to me so much, but it does. I’m so–I’m so embarrassed.

[somber music] I really hate that you had to see me this way, Alex.

Theresa, it’s okay. You know, I get it. I’m not judging you. I am concerned about you.

And, Theresa, nobody knows what happened here besides us and Jada. And Jada is not going to say anything.

What about you, Brady? Are you going to tell Tate that I slipped?

It’s kind of like nature doesn’t want you to remember certain dreams or nightmares. But I have learned that when my mind starts going to these dark places, it’s because it’s trying to tell me something, and it’s not good.

So what happened with Konstantin? You gave him hell, I assume.

Yeah. Yeah, I gave him hell. But then Maggie showed up.

And she had her blinders on, I assume.

Yeah. Unfortunately, she did. I tried to talk some sense into her, but she wasn’t having it. And then she was quick to remind me that back in the day, people were warning her about Victor. She didn’t listen about him. And she’s not listening about this dude, either.

Yeah. Well, you know, Victor was– rest his soul. Victor wasn’t always the most honorable man, but he did have his redeeming qualities. Plus he loved his family desperately.

Yes, he did. But this guy? Man, he is nothing but a lying buffoon, really. And a dangerous one. And unlike Victor, who genuinely loved Maggie, it’s pretty obvious that she has nothing but a giant payday for Konstantin Meleounis.

Hey, well, partner, I think you and I just need to face that we are not achieving the results we aimed for with this buffoon, so I think maybe it’s time that we approach this situation from a different angle.

[laughs] Well, it’s doing better than I expected. I reactivated my website, and I updated my social media. And I kind of went old-school, and I put out a few flyers around town.

Ah. Maggie, uh, yeah. I’m so sorry for your granddaughter.

You know, it’s ironic. It’s really painfully ironic. I’ve devoted…I’ve devoted most of my adult life to staying sober and helping other people stay sober. And yet, I watched drugs and alcohol claim my daughter, Summer. And now… I’ve watched drugs… put my granddaughter in a coma.

I made the unforgivable choice by getting behind the wheel after drinking, and I took your son’s life, and…

You know, by the grace of God, I found forgiveness in my heart for you. And it was because of Holly. I love her, and you love her. And for hers and for Daniel’s…

[sighs] I knew I had to let go of my anger towards you.

I have a question for you, Meleounis. What difference does it make if I ever set foot in your God-forsaken hometown?

[scoffs] Well, the difference is if you had been there, you would never forget it, huh? It is the most beautiful place on Earth, from the plains of Argolida to the mountains and to the old, beautiful sea, mm? But I’m sure you have seen all that and more. Am I right? So the real question is… why so secretive about it? Why don’t you want me to know?

[sighs] Uh, the guard, Adams, Hazel from the cafeteria, and then Mark the janitor. I thought they were cool. I thought I could trust them, but I guess I was wrong.

Yeah. Well, uh… we may have a dirty cop working in the Salem PD.

What? Why didn’t you tell us?

Because we didn’t suspect it until recently, and we do not know for sure. It’s just a hunch.

[Kate sighs] But it’s one we’re taking very seriously.

Doctors must be hopeful about the treatment. I mean, I know it wasn’t a given that she’d be accepted into the study.

God, a few weeks ago, we thought the SAT was the high-stakes test. You know, we–you know, we were going to start applying for colleges. And, you know, Holly was really anxious about that, but– but excited, too. God, everything that seemed so important then doesn’t even matter now.

Nicole, the doctors are going to help her. I got a real good feeling about this.

Me, too. But no matter what, I’m going to– I’m going to be there for her, talking to her, praying for her. I am never going to give up on my daughter.

[Nicole sighs]

You see, I thought the reward of Lucas getting out of this hellhole was worth the risk, because you assured us that people who were high up were going to be watching over him. But clearly, you were either lying or you made a misguided assumption, because my son is still here with a target on his back. I can only imagine how fiercely she fought sleep, as she did everything else, just like her mother.

I spoke to the governor state’s attorney, and the prerequisite for Lucas’s release is that he would provide evidence that could be used in court. And they won’t release him without him meeting those terms.

No, but you told me that two of the successful drug raids were because of the intel that he provided.

Because the raids didn’t lead to the source. Look, I’m not giving up. Even if I can’t get Lucas released yet, I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure he’s safe.

No, no, not right away. We thought that maybe it would make Theresa spiral downward even further if people saw that she was using again, so we stayed at the motel a little longer.

Oh, that’s terribly sad news, on top of the other sad news. I’m very sorry to hear it.

Yeah, I’m sorry, too. It is sad, like you said. Anyway, Brady sent me out to get coffee and donuts, but I think the truth is he is trying to get rid of me because he thinks that I might be agitating Theresa even more. Because she thinks that I might be, like, you know, judging her.

Right. Um, if Brady sent you out for coffee and donuts, caffeine and sugar will definitely help her. I’m proud of you, Alex, for including Brady. He’s a recovering alcoholic, as you know, and he knows Theresa very well. That was a very good call.

Well, I would encourage her to go back to her meetings. That’s very important.

Right. I also don’t think I’m going to drink around her anymore.

Well, I’d say, in the first few weeks after a relapse, that would be very helpful, yes. But, you know, eventually, recovering alcoholics and addicts, they– they need to tolerate people drinking in their presence and not be affected by it.

Well, still, I’m going to abstain from alcohol for a while.

You know, the benefits of human touch are profound.

Yeah, and I was hoping to get closer to it, but my raid at the bistro was a bust. We turned that place upside down. There was nothing. I still can’t believe it.

Brady. Hey, I’m sorry to wake you up, man. I didn’t know who else to call right now. Theresa’s gone.

We went to bed, and she was tossing and turning. She pretty much cried herself to sleep over Tate. Then I woke up a little while ago, and she’s MIA. I looked all over the apartment. I looked all over the building. She’s nowhere to be found. I looked everywhere I could possibly think. I called her cell phone over and over again, but it’s going straight to voicemail.

[Brady sighs]

Damn it. Damn it. I was afraid of this.

[tense music]

It’s nothing. It’s just… this thing, you know, with Holly. It’s–it’s made me realize how unpredictable life is.

Yeah, I get that. You know, with everything that’s going on with Mama, I have been on pins and needles waiting for her biopsy results because her whole life could just turn upside down. And mine and Abe’s and–

Yeah, I know.

[both sigh] I know. And look, if you really think about it and you look at what’s happened with Holly, you know, what happened to her dad, Daniel, you don’t… you don’t have to be old, you don’t have to be sick. There’s no guarantee on how much time we have left, and that’s made me realize that…

[soft dramatic music] I don’t want to spend another day without you, Chanel. So let’s get married again.

[Wendy gasps] Mm.

Oh, you haven’t heard? The police raided the bistro tonight looking for drugs.

I mean, Mom, it’s not like you have the best track record here. I mean, how many times have you sworn up and down to me that you’re walking the straight and narrow, and then, oh, yeah, a little money laundering or, oops, a little blackmail, forging marriage certificates.

You know, you don’t understand.

No, I understand enough that there is something going on that has you rattled. OK? And whatever that something is, you need to understand that you don’t have to handle this alone. OK? I’m your son. I’m right here. Let me help you.

[Ava sighs and chuckles softly]

OK. Let’s break this down. Two productive raids and a third that didn’t pay off. All spurred by information from the same informant. Michaels, what do you think happened?

I mean, I believe the intel was solid.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah? So do I. So what’s the Disconnect?

Well, the more I think about it, there can only be one explanation.

Mm-hmm. They knew we were coming.

How? Who knew the targets?

And the search warrants were sealed. And as far as we know, it was only our teams that executed them.

I signed off on every one of the cops involved. Something’s not right here.

So if the info came from within our department…

I know, I know. It could be a culmination of everything that’s happened, and she’s finally cracked under the pressure. Having to say goodbye to him tonight, not knowing if we’re going to see him for a month. She knows he’s nervous, he’s scared. And the fact that–the fact that we couldn’t protect them.

Theresa blames herself for a lot of this.

I know. I know, and that’s why we gotta find her. Look, man, if I’m wrong, the worst-case scenario is she’s going to be mad at both of us, but if I’m right… we gotta prevent a slip from becoming a skyfall.

[dramatic music]

OK, look. I know what you’re thinking. But before you say anything, just let me say I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, OK? You remember when I said I wanted to do something special for our would-be anniversary? Well, it was all centered around a proposal. But then, you know, your mom had her health scare. The holidays happened. The thing with Holly happened. And it just– I don’t know. It never felt like the right time, but I don’t want to wait any longer. OK? And this time I want to have a big, fat wedding, you know. I want to pull out all the stops. I want to invite everybody in town. Or we could do a destination wedding if you want. Not like the one we did in Italy. Now, I want to fly everybody out on the DiMera jet. We’ll go someplace warm. Maybe Hawaii or the Caymans.

[chuckles] It’s just–like, we can’t have this huge wedding and fly everyone to the Caymans. Not with everything that’s going on right now with your family. You know, your stepsister, she’s–she’s in a coma. That would come off as really insensitive.

[sighs] Wow. Yeah, you’re right. I–I guess I just wasn’t thinking. Well, I was thinking, but only about us. So how about this, then? How about a big, fat small wedding?

Uh, yeah, listen, Jada, I’m going to be brutally honest with you right now. Given–given what happened to Holly and given this drug epidemic, I, uh…I think that if we wait too long, it might be too late. So I’m asking you right now will you please help me?

Well, we are still investigating Holly Jonas’ overdose case. So are you suggesting that we look into Theresa Donovan’s financial records to support that investigation, Mr. Black? Because if so, I can get a search warrant right now to do so. So are you telling me that Ms. Donovan’s credit card records can provide evidence to support and aid the Salem PD on this ongoing investigation?

I don’t– I don’t know what she took and how long ago she took it. So best guess, it’s going to take a couple hours to get this out of her system, so… we’re going to have to ride this one out.

Well, I think that we have done all that we can do for tonight. We’ll jump back in tomorrow with some fresh eyes, all right?

Yeah, that sounds good. It’s been a frustrating day all the way around.

Yeah? Well, sometimes our searches go south. Happens to the best of us. But we will get to the bottom of it. And, hey, I’m sorry if, um… I know I said your feelings for Ava could potentially undermine your objectivity in this investigation. I appreciate your commitment to it.
