Phyllis: Hey! Twice in one day — to what do I owe the honor?

Jack: I have a lunch meeting. I’m a little bit early.

Phyllis: Ah, do you have a sec?

Jack: Yeah, sure, why?

Phyllis: Okay, um, well, it’s regarding those texts that you’re getting. Um…I just want you to know that I did a little digging, and, you know, I love a good mystery — you know that, right?

Jack: A little digging — online, you mean?

Phyllis: Well, I mean, other resources as well. We won’t get into that. Anyway, you know the address that’s on the texts, right? I found out who owns that house. I have a screenshot. Would you like to see it?

Jack: Yes.

Phyllis: Okay. Oh, okay, one sec, one sec.

Jack: Yeah, got it.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Phyllis: Hey, sweetie.

Summer: Hi, mom.

Tessa: Okay, picture this — a dude ranch in colorado, way up in the hills, wide open spaces, we are on horseback.

Mariah: In wedding gowns?

Tessa: Yeah, why not? Sidesaddle. We’ll see our vows as the sun goes down and literally ride off into the sunset.

Mariah: And miss our own wedding reception? Are you out of your mind?

Tessa: Okay, I didn’t think of that, but I thought we were brainstorming. No bad ideas, remember?

Mariah: Yeah, I know, I know, but there is such a thing as setting limits and an eensy, teensy little thing called the budget.

Tessa: Ugh, spoilsport.

Mariah: Plus, I want to have my two feet set firmly on the ground when I pledge my undying love for you.

Tessa: Ugh! There goes my hot-air balloon idea.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Look, as romantic as all of these ideas are, we really need to get serious because april is right around the corner, and if we don’t book a venue, we’re gonna have to push back the date.

Tessa: Nope, forget it, because I can’t wait that long to be your wife.

Mariah: You know…one day, I may get tired of hearing you say that, but today is not that day. This is happening.

Amanda: When are you leaving for the hospital?

Devon: Um, I’m gonna leave soon. Gonna meet abby and chance at their place so we can all ride together and be with dominic.

Amanda: Are you — are you sure that you don’t want me to come with you? Because I planned to go, and this doesn’t feel right, me just letting you go on your own.

Devon: No, it’s completely fine. I appreciate you being there when they took my bone marrow. Okay? Today is just the doctors transferring my cells to dominic through an iv, so it’s, you know, as far as miracles go, it’s pretty low-key.

Amanda: You’re right. The real miracle was that you were a perfect match for dom. Now he has the best odds of recovery.

Devon: That’s right, that’s right. Couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. But you have a lot going on today yourself. You’re closing your law practice to go work for lily. You don’t need to take time away from that.

Amanda: No, I don’t need to, but I’m more than willing to.

Devon: I appreciate that, i do, but abby and chance are gonna be there, so I won’t be alone.

Amanda: That’s true.

Devon: Yeah, and, you know, the real test isn’t today. It’s how dominic responds to the transplant over the next few weeks.

Amanda: And I hope you know i will support you, no matter what happens.

Chance: Hey. How’s he doing?

Abby: The same. Breaks my heart to see him like this. He’s so tired and listless. He used to wake up so bright-eyed and full of energy. The difference is stark.

Chance: Well, we know what’s wrong, and we’re gonna treat it now before anything gets worse.

Abby: Yeah. Just have to pray that the bone marrow transplant will be a success. You know, it’s gonna be kind of awkward explaining to our families why we didn’t tell them about all of this.

Chance: Don’t worry about that. They’ll understand, I promise. We got the situation under control, and there’s nothing more that they can do. So why worry them?

Abby: So how are you doing?

Chance: I’m fine. Abby, I’m fine, really. Don’t worry about me.

Abby: Chance, come on. We’ve been over this. I don’t want empty reassurances that you’re okay. I want the truth. I just heard something amazing!

Traci: Jack, I didn’t know we were going to the same place. You didn’t say anything about it at breakfast. Uh, maybe it isn’t any of my business.

Jack: We’ve been over this. Phyllis and I are just friends.

Traci: If you say so, jack.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Jack: Excuse me.

Traci: [ Chuckles ] What’s wrong?

Jack: Uh, nothing for you to worry about. You’d get your writer’s imagination working on this, like you do with friends that I’m visiting.

Traci: [ Chuckles ] Okay. You keep telling yourself that.

Jack: What if our positions were reversed? What if every time you were planning a trip to new york to meet your publisher, I assumed there was some kind of romantic tryst going on?

Traci: And who’s to say you would be wrong?

Jack: Wait, is there a chance that that’s actually —

Traci: Oh, my, will you just look at the time? I’m going to be late for my massage. We’ll see you later.

[ Laughs ]

Amanda: Promise you’ll call if you need anything.

Devon: Yeah, of course i will. And I forgot to tell you that moses is gonna be coming home late tonight ’cause he’s hanging out with faith.

Amanda: Yeah. You know, when dominic’s home with his nurse, don’t you think that moses will have a few questions?

Devon: Yeah, he might.

Amanda: Yeah, and are you gonna tell your brother about dom’s illness?

Devon: Uh, I don’t think so. I think that — or I’m hoping that dominic’s be healthy by the time he asks any questions, and he won’t have anything to be concerned about.

Amanda: Yeah, I didn’t tell my sister.

Devon: Good.

Amanda: She’s so excited about this move to chancellor that I want her to enjoy it, you know? I don’t want to give her anything new to worry about.

Devon: Yeah, of course, and you need to enjoy it too. Become the chief legal officer is a very big accomplishment that we will celebrate soon.

Amanda: Yeah, well, I am looking forward to that. But first things first, you need to go take care of your son.

Devon: Yes, ma’am. Love you.

Amanda: You too.

Abby: You know, I was really happy that you shared with me what happened at the stakeout with rey. I hope you don’t regret doing that.

Chance: Oh, no. No, I don’T. That really helped me, talking about that with you, it did.

Abby: I think I understand why you’ve had such a hard time opening up to me about all of this. ‘Cause you’ve always been so strong, the guy who saves the day, and having an experience where people are counting on you and you froze, I mean, that must have been a shock to your system.

Chance: You know what? I just don’t think this is the right time to talk about this. I mean, today should be about dominic, right?

Abby: Babe, stop. Please. Look, I — if we keep delaying this conversation, there’s always gonna be a reason not to discuss it. Come sit down. I think you feel like if you just ignore it, it’s just gonna go away, but it doesn’t work like that.

Chance: I know, I know, and I mean what I said. It helped to talk to you about that. It really did. I — I mean, it took some pressure off of me, I promise.

Abby: Chance, I am always gonna be here for you, always, and if I’m asking you to be honest with me, then I have to do the same.

Chance: What do you mean?

Abby: I really think that you need to see someone. You need to talk to someone, a specialist, someone who specializes in helping people who are struggling with the same things you are. Look at dominic. He was sick, and we took him to a doctor — a specialist who diagnosed him and found a treatment plan for him, something that’s gonna make him better. Obviously, there is no shame in helping our son, so why would your situation be any different? Chance, will you please just think about it?

Chance: I will. Okay, I will. I’m gonna get some more coffee.

Abby: [ Sighs ] I’m amber, I’ve lost 128 pounds with golo,

Sharon: We need to finalize all the details for your school trips.

Faith: I’m starting to get excited.

Sharon: Me too. I was thinking, since university of michigan is your top choice, we should just start at ann arbor, and then we’ll head to chicago and check out the schools there.

Nick: Ann arbor, huh? Getting ready for the big college trip?

Faith: We are trying to nail down what campuses are most important for me to visit.

Noah: Uh-oh, baby bird’s getting ready to fly the next. You ready for that?

Sharon: Um, your sister spent an entire semester in boarding school, remember? And we all managed just fine. I’m just excited about all the opportunities that she has. She’s got some great schools on her list. You know, I think that the hardest thing is gonna be choosing which one to go to.

Faith: You never know. The schools might narrow it down for me by rejecting my applications.

Nick: Come on, kid, you have really picked up your grades, your test scores are awesome.

Sharon: And your essays were fantastic.

Nick: Any school would love to have you. You’re gonna have lots of options.

Noah: Geez, sounds like they can’t wait to get rid of you. Better start packing, kid.

Faith: Yeah, that’s some killer advice, alright, coming from the guy who left london to come back home.

Noah: Hey, I am where I need to be now. But if I had never left genoa city, that — that would’ve been a mistake. And I never would’ve known what else is out there.

Mariah: I know how much you liked the spa when we were staying at the grand phoenix, so…

Tessa: [ Gasps ] Oh, oh! A couple’s massage wedding. The therapists will be our witnesses, and then think what we would save on wedding dresses.

Mariah: Uh, that’s an excellent point.

Tessa: Yeah, and then after the private ceremony, we could put on our robes and our slippers. We’ll take the elevator up to a beautiful champagne luncheon, and then we can take a long afternoon nap. Oh, my god, it would be heaven. We’ll be the most relaxed ones there.

Mariah: Wow. This is the most excited I’ve seen you since we started wedding planning.

Tessa: Uh, yeah, I think i slept on my neck weird, so i heard the word “spa” and I was just off to the races.

Mariah: Yeah, that makes sense. Okay, well, the advantages — it’s close to home, relatively cheap. You know, we could — probably could be booked for april. Disadvantages —

Tessa: It’s not super festive for everyone else.

[ Sighs ] Okay, alright, we can do better.

Mariah: Yeah. Okay, well, why don’t you do me? Plan my ideal wedding.

Tessa: Hmm, okay. Well, since you are the sentimental softie…

Mariah: Incorrect.

Tessa: Mnh-mnh, no, no. You are all about kittens and rainbows and —

Mariah: You are mistaken.

[ Chuckles ]

Tessa: Rainbows. That’s it. San francisco. We’ll go back to the place where it all started, when you kissed me, which was a surprise, by the way.

Mariah: Destination wedding.

Tessa: Yeah, I mean, we could go back, charter a cable car, get married while it runs around the city. I mean, the views would be phenomenal. And then we could have a reception by the sea.

Mariah: Oh, do you remember that place that we went to — fisherman’s wharf? It had the beautiful windows.

Tessa: Oh, yes, and the exceptional wine list. Yes.

Mariah: [ Laughs ] I like this idea. I like the idea of going back to the beginning. Our beginning, you know? Taking something that was confusing and making it joyful.

Tessa: I’m liking this idea a lot.

Mariah: Okay, well, I have an even better one.

Tessa: Oh.

Mariah: Okay, the ideal wedding would have to center around music for you, right? So why don’t we — hear me out — do dollywood? I mean, you were in singer/songwriter heaven when we went there before.

Tessa: I mean, I never thought of it as a venue. But a wedding in the great smoky mountains? I mean, it would be gorgeous.

Mariah: Yeah.

Tessa: Do you think they even do weddings?

Mariah: There’s one way to find out.

Tessa: Let’s make some calls.

Mariah: Okay.

Devon: So how’s dominic doing?

Abby: The same, but he will be on the road to recovery soon.

Devon: Yeah, I hope so.

Abby: How are you feeling after your bone marrow donation?

Devon: I’m feeling okay. I am. It’s a little sore where they harvested the cells, but I’m alright.

Chance: That’s good to hear.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: Well, I am gonna go get dominic all bundled up. Be right back.

Devon: Alright.

Chance: Hey, thanks again for getting everything set up here, man. All the medical equipment, air filtration, around-the-clock nurse, I mean, it’s very kind of you.

Devon: Yeah, absolutely. I’d rather have him recover here at home than in a hospital, you know what I mean? Whatever can make his life easier right now.

Chance: Well, you know, it means a lot to us.

Devon: Don’t mention it.

Chance: We’re really grateful for you, man, really. You were able to give dominic life, and, well, now you helped save his life.

Devon: Well, I didn’t do anything that you and abby wouldn’t have done yourselves, you know that. And my bone marrow being a match to dominic, it was just the luck of the draw, man.

Phyllis: So I have been annoying everyone by showing them my pictures from milan of the two of us and you and harrison.

Summer: Okay, okay, enough small talk. You know why I’m calling you, and I’m hoping — oh, I’m hoping that you’re ready to accept my job offer and join us here in milan.

Phyllis: Um, listen, I want to thank you for offering me this job, and I’ve given it serious consideration.

Summer: But…you’re turning me down?

Phyllis: Yeah, baby, I’m turning you down. Listen, I thought about it long and hard, and I realized, to my surprise, that [Sighs] Genoa city’s home. It’s home. And I put down roots here. I can’t deny that. And I have the hotel, and I do have friends here. I actually do have friends. And it just — it wouldn’t feel right leaving right now.

Summer: Well, I won’t deny I’m disappointed.

Phyllis: I know. But I want to thank you for offering me the job. That was so amazing of you, and it would’ve been great living in milan and working alongside you, seeing you every day, but it’s just not right for me. At least not now in my life.

Summer: Well, thank you for explaining everything so clearly. It does make sense, what you’re saying. Um…but still, there’s just — there’s one question that I have to ask you.

Phyllis: You can ask me anything. Ask me anything.

Summer: Well, I noticed that you didn’t mention jack, so how much did he really factor into your decision? Entresto is the number one heart failure brand

Phyllis: I don’t know why you’re asking me this.

Summer: Well, we had some conversations about jack while you were here in milan, and kyle said that he had conversations with jack about you while he was here on business. So I can’t help wondering.

Phyllis: Okay, listen, you have the wrong idea. Okay? Jack and I are friends. We are just friends. And he’s amazing, yes. I mean, he helped me so much during the break-up with your father. Ugh, I believe in him, I trust him, and, oh, come on. Summer, I just went through a horrible break-up with your dad. You think I’m gonna jump into another relationship?

Summer: I didn’t mean to sound judgy. Okay, jack is a great guy. You have a history. And I know that you both really care about each other.

Phyllis: Yes, yes, we care about each other, but that’s it. I mean, I trust him, I believe in him, and…listen. You know, no matter how many times I screw up, jack always forgives me, you know that? Always forgives me. And no matter what happens to me, bad or good, do you know who I go to to tell? I go to jack.

Summer: Mom.

Phyllis: What?

Summer: Are you positive it isn’t love? Because sure sounds like it is.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Listen, missy. Jack is not the reason I turned down your job offer, and that’s the bottom line. Are you satisfied?

Summer: Okay, I will admit

[Sighs] I definitely got my hopes up about you moving here, but I know it’s a really big decision, so I understand why you’re staying put. We’re just gonna have to visit each other more often, I guess.

Phyllis: Definitely. You know what? Next time, you come here, ’cause I just went to you. But let’s wait until the spring, when it’s warm.

Summer: Agreed. Well, hey, I got to get going. It’s a really busy day over here, so I will talk to you again soon.

Phyllis: Definitely. I love you, supergirl.

Summer: I love you, too.

Sharon: Okay, so university of chicago and then northwestern and then we’ll head to indiana and check out notre dame.

Faith: In case I haven’t said this enough, thank you so much for doing this.

Sharon: You’re so welcome. And so you know, I’m really looking forward to making these trips, too. Special time with my girl — what could be more fun that that?

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Sharon: And now I have my answer.

[ Chuckles ] Hi, moses.

Faith: I’ll pull together the info for the campus tours.

Sharon: Alright, as soon as i get it, I’m gonna make the travel plans. Moses, you want something to drink?

Moses: Yeah, hot cider?

Faith: Yum. Two, please.

Sharon: Coming up. Do you guys need a refill?

Nick: I’m good, thanks.

Noah: Yeah, I’ll take another hit.

Sharon: You got it.

Noah: Hey, mom, has faith talked to you about moses? Like, are they applying to the same schools or…?

Nick: That’s a good question. I’m very curious about that myself.

Sharon: Okay, she has mentioned that he’s mostly applying to schools in the northeast because that’s where his mom lives — new york.

Nick: Have you had the talk with her, you know, about how much her boyfriend should or shouldn’t factor into this very important decision?

Sharon: I haven’t felt the need to do that yet. Faith is applying to a lot of schools. She has no idea where she’s gonna be accepted, and who knows where things will be between her and moses months from now?

Faith: So are you gonna be visiting any campuses?

Moses: Yeah, my mom took me to a few when I was a sophomore, back when I was still thinking about med school.

Faith: So what’s your top choice?

Moses: Well, that may be changing. Since I’m thinking about doing career, hopefully with devon, I might stay local and go to gcu.

Faith: I think that might be the best choice for me, too.

Devon: Chance, how you doing, man? I know that you were struggling a bit before dominic got sick.

Chance: Yeah, I’m good. I’m great, yeah. Dominic’s my focus now, right?

Devon: Absolutely, yeah. He is. I imagine, though, that when he starts getting better, you’ll be able to focus a little more on your, you know, recovery and…

Chance: Sure, yeah, sure. Lot to look forward to.

Devon: Yeah. I remember after hilary and — and neil passed away, I…thought that I could get through it all on my own, and i didn’t want to listen to anybody’s advice around me. Um…and that worked out so well that I started having panic attacks. Which weren’t fun at all. You can ask abby about it. I had one at the opening of the grand phoenix. And after a while, I got so tired of feeling so worn down, that I reached out and I got the help that I needed. And it really worked for me. You know, it took a minute, but it was well worth it.

Chance: I’m glad you could turn things around. I’m hoping I can do the same.

Devon: Well, yeah, man, i know you can do the same, and the only reason I’m even bringing this up is just to remind you that you really got to — really got to go after the help. You can’t just sit back and wait for it to come to you. You know? It’s important that you take charge of what’s bothering you in life or it’s gonna take charge of you.

Moses: I’m surprised you’d even consider gcu. I mean, you were all “go, blue” the last time we talked.

Faith: Well, my mom encouraged me that I put it on my list when we first started talking about colleges. She got her degree there, and I’m kind of in the same position as you, hoping to work for my family whenever I graduate, so maybe it is best that I stick around, too, and that way, I can do internships or walk part-time at newman while I’m taking classes.

Moses: Yeah, but the thing is, though…

Faith: What?

Moses: Look, if you get accepted into a big-name college and then turn it down, your family’s probably gonna think it’s because of me, which I bet they’re not gonna be too happy about.

Faith: Wouldn’t have anything to do with you. This is strictly about what’s best for me.

Moses: You can say that, but will they buy it?

Faith: [ Sighs ] It’s all hypothetical. I haven’t made any decisions yet. But practically speaking, it would save us time if we were in the same place, not always flying back and forth to see each other. I mean, best to spend that time studying, right?

Moses: Yeah, I’m not too sure your dad would agree with that plan, but you’ve sure convinced me.

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Noah: The landscape architect I met with had some incredible ideas. In addition to a playground and a community garden, she also suggested —

Sharon: That’s my phone. I have to take this. Can you hold that thought?

Noah: Yeah.

Sharon: Okay. Hi. I was hoping to hear from you. Rey told me today’s the big day.

Chance: Yeah, yeah, we — we’re at the hospital right now. Dominic’s in the middle of the procedure as we speak.

Sharon: Any word so far?

Chance: Yeah, they say everything’s going well so far.

Sharon: Oh, good. Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Chance: Thank you. Thank you. We really appreciate that. Uh, so I’m actually calling because I was hoping that you could, um…refer me to a counselor.

Sharon: Well, yeah. I’d be happy to. A few people come to mind, but let me look into it and find out if they’re taking new clients, et cetera.

Chance: Well, thank you, sharon. I really appreciate that. Um, I guess we’ll update you when we get dominic home safe.

Sharon: Perfect.

Chance: We’ll talk to you soon.

Sharon: Thank you for making that call. I know it wasn’t easy for you.

Chance: Probably should’ve made it sooner, right?

Sharon: Well, this is when you were ready.

Devon: Hey, guys, look who i found.

Chance: Hey.

Abby: Hi.

Amanda: Hey. I realized I wasn’t gonna get any work done anyway. I hope you don’t mind.

Abby: Not at all.

Tessa: How is it that every wedding venue we were excited about is booked solid?

Mariah: It’s short notice, but we are not giving up, okay? We just have to think about places that nobody else would think of. So…the athletic club rooftop.

Tessa: In april? Brr.

Mariah: Well, that’s why nobody else would think about it, and devon could set out some heaters, you know, maybe open the pool a little bit early.

Tessa: I mean, it is a meaningful place for us. We had our first real date there.

Mariah: Okay, let’s keep it on the list.

Tessa: Okay. Well, I mean, that does make me think about the concert stage where we officially became teriah.

Mariah: A music festival.

Tessa: [ Gasps ] Ren faire.

Mariah: What does a renaissance faire have to do with our love for each other?

Tessa: Oh, nothing. We would just look really good in the costumes.

Mariah: Okay. Alright, we need to get to this, so here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna think of fun and quirky wedding ideas, just stream-of-consciousness. Let’s do this.

Tessa: Um, a haunted house.

Mariah: Devon’s private jet.

Tessa: Murder mystery wedding.

Mariah: Oh, I like that idea. That would be really fun. Um, what about, like, a beach-front mexican cantina, you know, barefoot in the sand?

Tessa: Ooh, downtown chicago. It could be one of those skyscraper restaurants where you can see all the lights twinkling in the night.

Mariah: Okay. Uh…the art institute.

Tessa: [ Gasps ] The field museum! We could get married next to a dinosaur.

Mariah: Oh, those photos would be so awesome.

[ Sighs ]

Tessa: They’re probably booked, too.

Mariah: What about a mansion in lake geneva? We could do, like, a “great gatsby” theme.

Tessa: Damn it! All of these are really good ideas. Now we have too many.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] We need help. Alice loves the scent of gain so much,

Mariah: So now we’re on overload. You know, there’s just too many good wedding ideas.

Tessa: So we need a little help narrowing things down.

Sharon: Okay, what are your top three or four favorites ideas? Venues and themes.

Mariah: Okay, first idea, one of those big, fancy chicago museums. It’s not too far for people to travel.

Tessa: And we could charter some buses, maybe. It’s a little extravagant.

Mariah: Yeah, but you only get married once, so, you know, why not?

Tessa: And it’s the perfect in-between. It’s a destination, but it’s not super far away.

Mariah: Yeah. Okay, second idea, one of those murder mystery places. Okay? Everybody has fun and the venue takes care of everything.

Tessa: Just a little off the beaten path.

Mariah: And third idea — we throw together a mini music festival. And between devon and tessa’s connections, I mean, I really think we could pull together some outstanding acts.

Tessa: So what do you think?

Sharon: Well, I like the museum idea. I mean, you can’t go wrong with any of those. And like you said, you only live once.

Nick: I’m feeling the murder mystery thing. You know, it’s the perfect amount of quirky, it’s practical. They, like, set up the whole thing for you, right?

Mariah: Yeah.

Moses: If it were up to me, I’d say music festival all the way.

Faith: Yeah, I agree. It’s so you.

[ Both laugh ]

Tessa: Seriously?!

Nick: Whoa, what’s funny?

Mariah: You guys each picked different ideas. How does that help us at all?

Sharon: Well, it’s like you said, they’re all such good ideas. It’s hard to choose.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Okay, noah, you’re our tiebreaker. What do you think?

Noah: Well, it seems pretty obvious to me what you should do.

Chance: Hey, everything squared?

Abby: Yes, I debriefed the nurse. Dominic is sleeping peacefully. You’d never know what he’s been through today. Just one little bandage.

Devon: Made it easy over the last couple days having so many distractions, you know? Between getting my bone marrow taken and setting up his nursery. I suppose all we can do now is just wait, right?

Chance: Guess so. Well, we will update you guys as much as possible, let you know how he’s doing.

Abby: Yeah.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: What is it?

Devon: [ Sighs ] I… it’s — it’s just killing me to think about spending the night away from dominic. I just — I almost wish that I can —

Abby: Okay, wait. You’re not suggesting dom go to your place, are you? I mean, he’s all tucked in. He’s been through so much today. He’s comfortable here.

Devon: No, I know he is. I just —

Phyllis: Yeah, me too. Had to break it to her that I’m not taking the job in milan. It was hard.

Jack: I’m sure summer was disappointed.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] She was. But she took it well. I’m very proud of her. She is so mature and level-headed. I don’t where she got that.

Jack: Well…[Chuckles] I have never said this to them — they’d take it the wrong way — but I have been dazzled at how well they have taken to parenthood. Every decision they make is based on the family. Harrison is thriving. It’s just all so gratifying.

Phyllis: Yeah, I know what you mean.

Jack: Listen, I got to get back to the office. Before I do, you said you had some information for me about that address you mentioned in the text.

Phyllis: Oh, yeah, I have the screenshot right here. Let me see. Hao nguyen. Does that name mean something to you? You don’t get much time for yourself.

Devon: Yeah, I couldn’t have said that any better myself. Thank you.

Amanda: Of course. And for what it’s worth, i appreciate how you guys are approaching this. Everyone is coming from a place of love and respecting each other’s friendship.

It’s all part of who you guys are and you accept each other wholeheartedly.

Tessa: Because it is. What matters isn’t where we get married or how it looks, it’s a celebration of us, which is wild and unpredictable and all-encompassing.

Victor: Sweetheart. I’m about to grab a bite to eat. Do you care to join me?

Victoria: Actually, I’m on my way out. I just wrapped up a meeting with one of my lawyers.

Victor: Any problems with the merger between newman media and chanccomm? No bumps in the road?

Victoria: No, none at all. It’s been remarkably smooth. Almost too smooth.

Victor: Really?

Victoria: I was expecting to hear that you overrode adam’s decision about his new coo, since clearly, I mean, you were surprised that he chose sally to be his second in command.

Victor: Yeah, well, I think it’s a rather interesting choice, to be honest with you.

Sally: So, I was working late last night, looking at all of the assets and ad revenue across newman media, seeing if there was any overlap with chanccomm. I thought there was gonna be a lot of redundancies, but there actually weren’t that many, which means we are going to have a robust library of content. And with all the growth and expansion, I think it’s the perfect time to assess the best way to grow our audience.

Adam: How do you think we’re gonna do that?

Sally: Mm, I am so glad you asked. I think that we should offer subscription deals to our existing customers on whatever platform they’re currently on and then up-sell them on the other platforms.

Adam: Hmm.

Sally: It is genius or genius?

Adam: It’s a good idea. And I really like your passion for it. But I think it’s a little simplistic. I worry that you may have overlooked the complexity of this merger because it’s not gonna be as easy as you think.

Billy: Hi. Good morning.

Lily: Good morning. Kind of. Second pot of coffee is hot.

Billy: Fantastic. Thank you very much for that. I didn’t even look. What time is it?

Lily: Well, it’s late enough that I’ve been up for hours working.

Billy: Are you calling me a slacker? Are you getting competitive about who’s working harder? Because I’ve put in some good time on the midnight shift.

Lily: Oh, did you have another sleepless night?

Billy: Yes. My eyes popped open around 2:48 A.M., As they usually do. Grabbed my phone and came downstairs.

Lily: Was last night like the others?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah. It was good. You know, my stream of consciousness, my free-association brain wave, whatever you want to call it. Got some good ideas down and went back to bed around 4:00 A.M.

Lily: Wow. I didn’t even hear you come back to bed.

Billy: Which means, by my calculation, that would put it at about an hour and 12 minutes of absolute genius. And if you’re asking me, that would be a few hours of a caffeinated morning slog.

Lily: Oh, wow. Who’s being competitive now?

Billy: Mm.

Nate: Hey. Sorry I’m late.

Ashland: Ooh. Hey. Not a problem at all. I was able to get some work while I was waiting. And I ordered you a latte with soy milk.

Nate: Well, thank you. I’m impressed. You know my favorite drink.

Ashland: Well, I realized you had a penchant for them in italy. And besides, this way, we can get, you know, right down to business, no time wasted.

Nate: Wow. But generous and efficient.

[ Laughs ] I should hire you at the hospital to help me navigate through all the over-complicated rules and regulations I have to deal with.

Ashland: Oh, god, no, that’s a terrible idea. I would not last two days. I despise red tape, and it seems to me you’re of the same mind, which makes me wonder if you’re ready for that professional change we talked about.

Amanda: Welcome home.

Phyllis: Hey! Thanks.

Amanda: So, how was milan?

Phyllis: It was really, really nice. It was great spending time with summer and kyle, harrison.

Amanda: And what about the job at marchetti?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] I’m staying.

Amanda: Yay.

Phyllis: Ugh. I’m not leaving genoa city, okay?

Amanda: And is the reason you’re staying in town — is it standing right over there?

Amanda: Uh-huh. Uh-huh. But still, you know, I know that you’re gonna miss your friends, but there are planes and there are phones, and long-distance friendships — they can work. But long-distance romance? That’s a little harder to pull off.

Phyllis: Okay, listen. For real. I have concluded that I’m not gonna have a relationship with jack, a romantic one. We are friends, and we will always be friends. And that’s really important to me. Inevitably, I do something to screw up our relationship, so I’m not gonna do that. As much as I would want to, you know, have a romantic, um, relationship with him, I’m not — I’m not gonna do it. It wouldn’t work.

Amanda: Well, I think you’re selling yourself short. But, yeah, you know yourself better than anyone, so I’m not gonna try and change your mind.

Phyllis: Oh, okay. Thank you. I appreciate that.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: Fighting bureaucracy is just a part of my job. But I do find it frustrating because what I care about most are the patients. All that paper stuff only takes my attention away from people I’m trying to help. Speaking of which, how are you feeling as of late?

Ashland: Well, look at you. Not only a brilliant doctor, but a master of deflection. Okay, I’ll play that game. That’s fine. I feel great. Thank you for asking. But I’m not letting you off the hook that easy. Nate, I just — I hate seeing you feel so unfulfilled and so frustrated in your work, especially when you could be using your talents toward so many other, more important things than paperwork.

Nate: Okay, look, I didn’t mean to complain. The administrative aspects of what I do are important. Hospitals need to be compliant with regulations. Doctors need to be held accountable. So I understand why the rules exist. I just think a lot of unnecessary complications have been built into the system.

Ashland: Yeah, but, see, that’s exactly why I want you to come over to newman/locke. I’ve had this — I’ve had this idea stuck in my head, right? If we could put together newman’s healthcare divisions with locke’s communication tech, we could create real innovation in that arena with the right leadership.

[ Exhales sharply ] And, see, we would have to find someone who not only understands how to change the current systems, but also can see healthcare in a much bigger way, not just locally, but globally.

Nate: You really put a lot of thought into that. That was quite the pitch.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] Looking at the big picture is, uh, what I do. I’m very good at it. Let me try one more thing. Um, I have been the recipient of an extraordinary healthcare system. And you were so caring and useful during that time. I see this not only as a way to give back to you, but to enable you to give so much to so many more people. Think about it. If you were to leave the hospital and join us, you could take all those insights, all that empathy you have, and use it on a much bigger level. Imagine the change you could make globally if you were to join us at newman/locke.

Victoria: You know, dad, i really can’t seem to figure you out these days.

Victor: Mm.

Victoria: One minute, you’re furious at adam that he almost threw everything away at newman media by falling for billy’s ruse, and then you make the sale of the company contingent on adam being left in charge. Now, I know that you seem okay with sally being installed as coo, but clearly you were upset when I first told you about it.

Victor: I discussed that with both adam and sally, and they were both very persuasive.

Victoria: I’m not buying that, not for a minute. No, I’m not. There is no way that sally is prepared for this job, in my opinion. So, what is this? Is it like a game or another test? What are you after here?

Victor: What I’m always after — unity in the newman family.

Victoria: And you think that by forcing me to work with adam, that’s gonna happen?

Victor: Adam has made mistakes. We’ve all made mistakes, okay? I’m not gonna dismiss him for that. He’s done a pretty damn good job at newman media. I believe in him.

Sally: I am not taking anything for granted or underestimating the complexity of the situation. Of course we have to work fast to get both media teams at both companies integrated. We want them working together and not against each other.

Adam: Well, that is easier said than done.

Sally: You didn’t let me finish. I have already consulted with the chief marketing officers of both chanccomm and newman media to get their take. They were both very receptive to my ideas. They seemed very motivated and ready to collaborate.

Adam: Mm-hmm. That’s ’cause they would rather work together than get fired. I think that there’s still some overlap to be found. But I think that we’re gonna have to do some downsizing before we can even think about expanding.

Sally: So, what are you saying exactly?

Adam: That we should put a pin in the subscription idea for the moment.

Sally: But you’re wrong.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Excuse me?

Sally: It makes sense for a number of reasons. Let me put the numbers in front of you.

Adam: You know what? Why don’t we finish this conversation over breakfast where we can focus in a public place? I’m steve, I lost 138 pounds in nine months on golo

Victoria: You know, you claim that you want family unity, but your actions often suggest something different.

Victor: What would I gain by creating discord?

Adam: Did someone call a family meeting?

Victor: Well…

Adam: Well, surely you have more important things to talk about than us.

Victoria: True. In fact, I should be going.

Adam: Well, we won’t keep you. We’re just here for a working breakfast. We’re talking about sally’s ideas on how to capitalize on a bigger and better newman media.

Victoria: Great. Ashland and I would love to, um, hear your ideas. I’m sure that we’ll have some thoughts.

Sally: Yeah, I would love that. I mean, there’s no time like the present. Would you like to do it now?

Victoria: Oh, no. Unfortunately, I can’T. I’m running late for something. But maybe dad would like to join you for a family meal. He loves those.

Victor: Bye, sweetheart.

Adam: What was that all about?

Sally: Pretty good guess.

Victor: Nothing for you two to worry about. So, uh, how are the two of you settling in?

Sally: [ Stammers ] Well, i am excited and energized. And with adam at the helm, i have no doubt that the larger division will flourish. He brings out the best in his employees. He challenges them to back up their ideas and leaves them room to spread their wings. What more could you ask for in a boss?

Victor: Mm.

Adam: I, uh, did not pay her to say that.

Sally: Well, I mean, technically, you do pay me, but not for… that is how I genuinely feel.

Adam: Anyway, uh, things are going well. We should probably get down to business.

Victor: Could I have a word with you, adam, alone? Do you mind, sally?

Sally: Absolutely.

Victor: Thank you.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] What’s up?

Victor: I hope you remember that I asked you to keep an eye on ashland locke, okay?

Adam: I won’t let anything get by me. I know there’s a lot of agendas and power plays at work here.

Victor: Now, sally seems to be very good for you. I mean, you know, she is showering you with compliments.

Adam: Well, the respect is mutual. We have a lot in common. We both have taken our share of slings and arrows, dealt with people’s negative assumptions about us. Sally loves defying those expectations — something that i relate to well, so… anyway, she’ll be, uh, an asset to the executive team.

Victor: Good to know.

Adam: Will you excuse me?

Victor: You bet.

Victoria: I’m sorry. Sorry.

Ashland: Oh!

Victoria: Sorry to keep you waiting.

Ashland: No problem at all. I’ve been making the most of my waiting time this morning.

Victoria: Oh?

Ashland: Yes, trying to convince my friend here to turn in his white coat for a business suit.

Victoria: And?

Nate: I’m still not quite ready to turn in my stethoscope yet, but I must admit your husband is a master salesman.

Victoria: Well, yes, he is definitely used to getting what he wants. I feel sorry for people trying to resist his pull. But, you know, I would also feel bad for the patients and the administrative staff at memorial if you left.

Ashland: You know what? Just stop because you’re supposed to be on my side.

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

Ashland: You’re supposed to help me convince him and not give him counterarguments.

Victoria: Look, nate is my friend first and foremost. And you’re talking to him about a major career shift. I know he’s been a wonderful source of support and information for you, but I know that he could conquer any path that he chooses. It’s got to be the right path for you, though, right?

Nate: Mm.

Billy: You know, not to toot my own horn, but I think I might be onto something with these late-night musings, thinking about this idea that devon likes about starting my own podcast.

Lily: Yeah? Want to share your wit and wisdom with the world?

Billy: Yeah. I didn’t take it very serious in the beginning, mostly because i didn’t want to put myself out there. But your idea about doing it anonymously, taking on a persona, you know, changing the names, doing that whole thing — that is definitely one way to go about it. The other way would be me being me. I don’t have to talk about anything that’s not public knowledge, and if the purpose of it is to actually help people overcome adversity and challenges in their life, well, all my challenges, all my adversity — it’s already out there.

Lily: Yeah. No. True. Um…yeah. Look, I love that you’re really excited about this, and I know i encouraged you, but, um…

Billy: But? Come on. Give me the “but.”

Lily: [ Chuckles ] I just want to make sure that the podcast doesn’t take any time or energy away from your coo duties.

Jack: I hope I’m not interrupting.

Amanda: Uh, no, no, not at all. I was just catching up with phyllis about her trip to milan.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Amanda: I had some news that I wanted to share, but —

Phyllis: Oh, I’m sorry. Did you want to share something? I was just yammering on and on about italy.

Amanda: No.

Phyllis: Go. What’s going on?

Amanda: I just have a very interesting job offer on the table.

Phyllis: You do? Well, it must be interesting for you to even consider it. You just started a practice with your sister.

Amanda: Yeah. No. It is, indeed. Um… but, you know, my sister is on her way over here, so I’m gonna sit down and chat with her, and I will tell you all about it afterwards.

Phyllis: You’re gonna leave me hanging, are you?

Amanda: Yeah. Yeah, I am.

Phyllis: Great.

Amanda: But don’t worry. We’re gonna make a time. We’ll sit down. We’ll chat about everything. We have to catch up.

Phyllis: Alright.

Amanda: Bye.

Imani: Hi.

Phyllis: Hey. Tell me — have you received any more mysterious texts?

Jack: No, and I haven’t responded to the first. If someone’s playing games with me — and I suspect they are — I’m not up for it. Hello, how can I?

Nate: Thanks again for the coffee. I should get going.

Victoria: Oh, no. I hope I didn’t scare you off.

Nate: No, I got a late breakfast date with elena. I promised her a non-cafeteria meal.

Ashland: Listen, I really hope you’ll consider my offer. It wasn’t just idle talk.

Nate: I appreciate it, and i will give it some thought.

Ashland: Thank you.

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: So, why are you so intent on convincing nate to leave the medical field for one in business?

Ashland: I just think he’d be good at it. Besides, I get the feeling he’s frustrated and ready to move on.

Victoria: Well, I get that, but I know you, and there’s got to be more to it than that. There are tons of smart people out there with medical backgrounds that can do the same job that you want nate to do. In fact, some of them may be on staff already. So, why him?

Ashland: I’ve always subscribed to the theory that it’s best to surround yourself in business with allies. I trust nate implicitly.

Victoria: You feel like you need more allies now?

Ashland: I think you can never have too many people willing to look out for you.

Billy: Look, the beautiful thing about this podcast is that it only takes an hour out of my day. And the emotional release I get from it actually gives me more energy at work.

Lily: I know. I do like seeing this fire in your eyes.

Billy: Hey, I — i understand, you know, tapping into my subconscious can be a little bit scary, I think because it implies that you’re facing demons, but I have faced many demons over the years and i finally feel like I’m digging deep enough to find the goodness underneath all the trauma. And maybe that’s what it’s all for, everything I’ve been through — and the restless, sleepless nights that I’m going through now. You know, I’ve spent far too long looking at everything that is wrong in my life, and I’m finally seeing the things that are right and coming out of it on the other end. All that anger, the addiction, the bitterness. I feel whole, and I feel well. And I think that is the journey that people are gonna connect with.

Lily: Look, I do think that it’s a valuable experience to share. But what if I’m not ready to share my coo with the public?

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: Oh, please help yourself.

Sally: [ Laughs ] What am I doing? I got so caught up in spit-balling, I did not realize that I was…

Adam: You were stealing my breakfast in broad daylight.

Sally: [ Laughs ] I did not mean to be a food thief.

Adam: It’s fine. I don’t mind sharing. I could get used to it.

Sally: I’m actually not used to having such a big breakfast, so maybe I should sneak in a trip to the gym before I head back to the office to burn off some energy.

Adam: Yeah, I was — I was actually thinking the same thing. It’s very important to have a work-life balance, you know?

Sally: Mm-hmm. Yeah. I think I actually read something about that on one of newman media sites, that if you take a break and you get in some exercise, you’re actually way more productive when you get back to your desk.

Adam: You know what? I like a treadmill as much as the next guy, but I might have a better idea on how to get some cardio in.

Amanda: That is exactly what I told them. And then they told me that there will be a place for you at the company, as well.

Imani: What role did they have in mind?

Amanda: Well, you’d be on the legal team — so, you can work in a specific department or you can continue to work directly under me.

Imani: That’s very generous.

Amanda: And billy and lily — they believe in me and you. And when they get behind something, they go all-in, so they just kept sweetening the deal.

Imani: [ Sighs ] Okay. Um, it’s tempting. I’m open to it. But the decision is really yours to make. So I think you need to ask yourself some hard questions. Or I can ask them.

Amanda: [ Scoffs ] Okay. Shoot, counselor.

Imani: Okay. Are you responding positively to the offer because it’s flattering to be asked?

Amanda: Well, that would be extremely superficial and short-sighted of me.

Imani: Mm. Are you playing it safe because you really don’t want to risk taking the chance of going solo? You said you were interested in trial work. Isn’t that why you left chanccomm? So, why would you be interested in going back to a corporate law job?

Phyllis: Jack, you have to be a little bit curious about the texts. I mean all of them — and the random address?

Jack: Actually, I’m not. I guess the question is, why are you?

Phyllis: Because it’s who i am. I am curious. Let me take a look at it. Please?

Jack: Uh…yeah, go ahead. I’m guessing you won’t stop bugging me about it.

Phyllis: No. Definitely not.

Amanda: Well, leaving chanccomm was more about giving me enough time to take down sutton. The legal work at chancellor industries — it would be incredibly varied and exciting. See, chanccomm — it was all media-related. Protecting sources, freedom of speech, libel cases. But heading up the legal department of a massive conglomerate — now, that would never get boring. Not to mention, billy and lily — they are great to work for. And the perks and the pay?

[ Clicks tongue ] Top notch. But most importantly, you and i will still be able to work together, and that is the reason why we wanted to go into private practice in the first place. So, I rest my case.

Sally: Oh, my god, it is like you have never done this before.

Adam: What? Got a key card to work?

Sally: Yeah. That.

Adam: Well, I’m just happy that we got a room despite phyllis’ ban on you being here.

Sally: Okay, well, you’re gonna be a lot happier in a few minutes if you don’t blown it now.

[ Lock whirs, disengages ]

[ Both breathing heavily ]

[ Both chuckle ]

Sally: [ Laughs ] Your dry skin story changes

Sally: You were right. That was way better than the gym.

[ Both laugh ]

Adam: Wait. What did you say? That I was right? I think you should admit that more often.

Sally: I just did. So don’t get cocky.

[ Both laugh ]

[ Sighs ] Okay. Now that we have burned off some excess energy, I have a work-related question that we didn’t get to earlier.

Adam: Wait, should we put clothes on to talk business? Like, maybe we should make that a rule for us?

Sally: Since when do we follow the rules?

Adam: Yeah, that is a good point. Go ahead.

Sally: What was it that victor wanted to talk to you about privately?

Adam: It was, uh, just a family thing.

Sally: But with the newmans, family is business. Victor is watching over us like a hawk, and victoria is our boss, so as your coo, if there is trouble on the horizon, i would be more positioned to help you if I knew what could happen.

Adam: Did you just get me naked so you could pump me for information?

Sally: No. But you did give me a really good idea for next time. Trust is the basis of any good working relationship. You have to trust me with whatever is going on.

Adam: I get the feeling that ashland’s falling out of favor with victor. And my father asked me to keep my eyes open.

Sally: Well, ashland has always been a bit of an enigma to me, someone who always seems to be working an angle. So, are you gonna do what victor is asking — be a spy?

Nate: Thank you for letting me bend your ear about ashland’s job offer.

Elena: Of course. Anytime. And I understand why you might find it tempting to leave the hospital. I have a pile of papers waiting for me, too.

Nate: It’s not just that. The last few staff meetings have been downright contentious.

Elena: And you don’t think working for newman/locke would be contentious?

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Elena: I know you’re friends with ashland and victoria, but come on. They’re gonna lure you in with a big promise, and then they’re gonna definitely have a honeymoon phase, but you’re still gonna be working for the locke-ness monster. And you haven’t seen that side of him yet. Not to mention, victoria isn’t always the warmest person.

Nate: Okay. I see your point. I actually saw a little bit of a competitive dynamic between the two of them earlier.

Elena: And that could be a problem for you if you get caught in their crossfire.

Nate: Yeah, but on the other hand, if ashland’s big-picture talk is for real, think about all the good I could do.

Elena: Mnh, I don’t know. I feel like you need to think long and hard about this, if it’s something you’re seriously considering. Career-wise, it would be a life-changing decision. And you just made one of those. You sure you want to make another one?

Billy: Ah, what a surprise.

Billy: It is. It’s behind us. And, listen, we are in the groove. We have a really good handle on what we need to accomplish at chancellor, and we’re putting all our creative energy into making that a reality, of course because of our boss here and her steadfast leadership. Most importantly, the snacks are way better at chancellor.

Amanda: Oh, well, that is very good to know. But the question is, is there a ledge that we can scream off of when things get too stressful?

Lily: Oh, yeah.

Billy: Oh, we can make that happen for sure. Listen, we are so excited that you’re joining us, and I promise you it is not gonna be boring.

Amanda: With billy around, it never is.

Imani: Well, I appreciate the opportunity, and I plan on working my butt off.

Lily: Great. Well, I mean, if you’re chancellor’s two newest employees, then let’s, uh, get to work, yeah?

Amanda: Alright, let’s do it.

Lily: Alright. Sit, please. Um, as you know, we have a lot going on right now, right, including the partnership with hamilton-winters. So I think maybe we should start on creating a template for our agreements of the work that we’re gonna do with our creative teams.

Amanda: Okay, we can get working on that today. But my initial thought is it should all be work-for-hire so that we own the I.P.

Lily: Well, actually, I’ve done some research, and i disagree.

[ Laughs ] I think it’s counter to our mission to own our creatives’ intellectual property, so I’d love to create a template that can kind of be a win-win situation for both sides.

Amanda: Okay. Got it.

Lily: Yeah?

Amanda: I look forward to coming up with some options for you to consider. We will work on that today. See? I told you that this job would keep us on our toes.

Amanda: Wow. I mean, did we just join chancellor industries?

Imani: Mm-hmm. Oh, it happened. Now we have to figure out how to get out of our office lease.

Amanda: And find a few lawyers to take over the cases that we have right now.

Imani: [ Sighs ] This is a big move. But I feel good about it.

Amanda: So do I. It feels right.

Imani: Mm-hmm. And I wouldn’t have this opportunity if it weren’t for you, so thank you.

Amanda: Oh, come on. You have more than proven yourself as a sound, talented, legal mind, okay? I would not have asked you to start a firm with me if that wasn’t the case.

Imani: Mm-hmm. Can I ask you something personal?

Amanda: Of course. We’re family.

Imani: Is there some sort of history between you and billy?

Amanda: What would make you think that?

Imani: I just thought i picked up on a dynamic earlier.

Amanda: Billy and I are just friends…

Imani: [ Laughs ]

Amanda: …Who helped each other through some rough patches.

Imani: Mm, well, he seems like a very interesting person.

Amanda: Mm.

Imani: I’m guessing this next chapter is going to be quite a ride.

Amanda: Huh. With billy involved, you can count on that.

Billy: Well, I would say we really bolstered the chancellor team, adding amanda and imani. Good job.

Lily: Thank you. I couldn’t agree more.

Billy: And I love the way you handled the content agreement between hamilton-winters on the joint venture — fantastic.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Billy: Feels like any worries that you had about not being able to do this job are long gone.

Lily: Yeah. I got to say, I’m feeling confident.

Billy: Good.

Lily: You know? I think I have this. And it feels pretty damn good.

Billy: Yeah. Well, it looks pretty damn good on you.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Adam: I definitely let my father believe that I was ready and willing to report back to him. But am I actually going to do it? Um…I don’t know. A part of it bothers me, playing my father’s game.

Sally: ‘Cause it undermines your position. It makes it seem like you wouldn’t be in charge of newman media if you weren’t doing victor’s bidding.

Adam: Exactly. And I resent him for that. Because I’m not a chess piece in his game with victoria and ashland. I mean, I earned my ceo title, and I earned the power that goes with it.

Sally: Well, you need to look out for yourself first… because that’s exactly what your father and your sister would do, right?

Adam: Right.

Sally: Don’t freak out… but I get you.

Adam: Who’s freaking out?

Victoria: I hope that you consider me an ally.

Ashland: Of course I do. I always will. But we both know victor is up to something.

Victoria: I don’t disagree. I ran into him earlier at society, and I was very surprised to find out that he actually supports sally as coo, after I gave him plenty of ammunition to give adam a hard time about it. But he was all smiles when sally and adam walked in to present her fabulous ideas about newman media.

Ashland: I wonder what his play is.

Victoria: Other than keeping us guessing, I have no idea. But I intend to find out.

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Victor: Well, now, michael baldwin, how the hell are you?

Michael: Ah, the country’s beautiful. The cuisine is — mmm! — Delicious. The people are friendly.

Victoria: I don’t remember sending you to peru on a vacation.

Michael: Uh, I know how to make my job fun. I just got to enjoy this amazing meal with a very talkative doctor who recently left his job at — wait for it — the same clinic where ashland received his miracle treatment.

Victor: Why did he leave?

Michael: Well, he was fired for questioning some of the decisions his bosses made.

Victor: Did he tell you anything about ashland locke?

Michael: He remembered him clearly. Uh, he said there was a story about the treatment and his condition, one he would happily tell me in great detail for a price.

Victor: So, what are you waiting for?

Michael: So, I have your authorization to pay this gentleman a fee for his services?

Victor: You bet. You pay him anything he wants. Have that man talk on the record about ashland locke. I need incontrovertible proof about locke’s deception. Alright?

Chloe: Oh, we absolutely are.

Chelsea: Great. Thank you for meeting me early.

Chloe: Yeah, not a problem. I think it’s helpful to go over our pitch once or twice before we meet with lauren.

Chelsea: Yep, we only get one shot with her. We got to make it count.

Chloe: Well, the way I see it, we’re doing fenmore’s a favor. I mean, lauren would be crazy not to work with us.

Chelsea: I love your attitude.

Chloe: Well, I’m just telling it like it is.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] I wish I had your confidence.

Chloe: Hey, look, it is normal for you to feel a little nervous right now. You haven’t been in a big meeting like this for a long time, and you have been through a lot since then. But you got this. We have a great plan and the talent to back it up.

Chelsea: You’re right. You are right, 100%. I just have butterflies, you know? There’s so much at stake. This isn’t just a business deal for me — this is the start of a whole new beginning. Again. And I need to make it stick.

Jack: Okay, here’s their trip to the alps.

Lauren: Aww, look at that. Is this his first time on skis?

Jack: Oh, yeah. Apparently harrison is a natural. Summer was terribly worried, and kyle found the perfect instructor. Before the day was over, my grandson was bombing down the beginner slope. Here’s another.

Lauren: Oh, my, so much fun. They grow so fast.

Jack: Oh, I know. I feel like I’m missing out on so much.

Lauren: But summer and kyle send you pictures.

Jack: Oh, yeah, yeah. We video chat all the time. Last week, harrison wanted to impress his grandpa jack with the italian he’d learned. It was priceless. “Aree-bo-dirtsi.”

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Jack: It’s like a breath of fresh air, that kid.

Lauren: Aww. Well, phyllis is probably having a great time.

Jack: Oh, I guarantee it. And she’ll come back with lots of charming stories and more pictures than you’re gonna want to see.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Ah, do you think she’s made a decision yet?

Jack: About the marchetti job? I haven’t heard.

Lauren: I’m sure we will soon.

Jack: I have no doubt.

Lauren: Phyllis packing up and moving to italy — that’s a big change.

Jack: Yeah, but she seemed ready for change.

Lauren: Yeah, or she could stay right here.

Jack: Yeah, I suppose, but, you know, the longer she stays in milan, I think the more likely she’ll accept summer’s offer. I guess we’ll see.

Lauren: Mm-hmm. You know, you’re acting very nonchalant, noncommittal, but I’m pretty sure you’re fully invested in the outcome.

Jack: This is completely phyllis’ choice.

Lauren: Be honest — how much are you hoping that she turns that job down and stays right here?

Abby: Thank you so much for meeting with me.

Rey: Of course. I was a little surprised when you reached out because, you know, you got so much going on with dominic.

Abby: Yes, but we got some good news. Devon is a perfect match, so he’s gonna be his bone marrow donor.

Rey: What? That is great. So your little boy’s gonna get the help that he needs. Hopefully he can make a full recovery.

Abby: Yeah.

Rey: Oh.

Abby: Thank god. It was a big step forward, and there’s nothing more I can do about that tonight, so that’s actually why I wanted to talk to you about chance.

Rey: Okay. Why?

Abby: Look, I overheard him tell you that he was sorry for what went down at the stakeout, and I asked him what happened and he just told me that he wasn’t ready to go back to work, so he left early, and that was it. But I — I got the feeling that there was more to it than that. Do I need to be worried about my husband? What happened that night?

Rey: Look, I don’t know if i can talk about something that chance didn’t choose to tell you. That feels like a breach of confidence between partners.

Abby: How bad was it? Rey, what are you not telling me?

Rey: Alright, so, I’m gonna circle around to the east side of the house. When I get there, you come at him from the other side, alright?

[ Smashing ]

Chance: [ Breathing heavily ] Oh, man. Rey.

Rey: Hey. We got the perp. Miller and muncie picked him up running to the park. They already brought him in.

Chance: Sorry, man, I — i told you I was up for this, and I really thought I was. I mean, it’s a simple stakeout, and I was useless, just like in spain, man. My team needed me and I let them down.

Rey: Chance, hold on. What happened tonight had nothing to do with spain. Nobody got hurt.

Chance: I don’t think I ever will be, rey. I mean, do you think I can get past what happened to me in spain? Do you? I’m sorry, man, I —

Abby: Look, I understand that you’re in a difficult position because you don’t want to betray the trust that chance has in you as his partner.

Rey: Exactly.

Abby: But think about the position that I’m in as his wife. Chance always wants to be strong. He doesn’t want to ask for help, even when he’s struggling. But all I want to do is help him, and I can’t do that if i don’t know what’s going on.

Rey: I understand. Let’s put it this way — it became evident to both me and chance that it was too soon for him to step into the fray. We have to reevaluate, and that’s all I’m comfortable sharing right now.

Abby: Well, I appreciate your loyalty, but between everything that’s going on with chance and now dominic, my nerves are completely shredded. And I think that’s one of the reasons why chance is holding back, why he’s not opening up to me, it’s because he doesn’t want to be a burden. But what he doesn’t realize is that he could never be a burden, and keeping everything inside, that’s the worst thing that he can do.

Rey: I can’t argue with that.

Abby: So, please, will you talk to him? I mean, cop to cop, partner to partner, friend to friend? Can you get him to listen? ‘Cause I think that you’re the only person that can convince him that he doesn’t have to pretend like everything’s okay for his family’s sake.

Chloe: Okay, we are on it. Our creative juices are flowing, our business juices are flowing. I feel like we could sell cotton candy to a dentist.

Chelsea: I don’t disagree. We are prepared, and I like that you bring up our history without making us sound out of touch.

Chloe: Well, your designs do that. I mean, they are so contemporary, they make it look like we know what we’re doing.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm, we’ll fool them all.

Chloe: And any time you can take a shot at sally, go for it, because lauren has more issues with her than you do.

Chelsea: Whatever it takes. We’ve got a really, really exciting presentation, if I do say so myself.

Chloe: Oh, well, it’s not just you. I say it, too. We’re awesome.

Chelsea: Damn right we are.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: Let’s do this.

Jack: Phyllis should do what makes her happiest, whether that’s moving to milan or just staying in genoa city or flying around the world in a hot air balloon. It’s her choice to make.

Lauren: And you really have no opinion on the matter?

Jack: Maybe I do.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Maybe? Why are you being so coy? I, for one, would be very sad if phyllis decided to move, and i would certainly understand if she needed a change. I mean, she’d be closer to her daughter, she and summer would work at marchetti.

Jack: It’s an amazing opportunity. Why would she pass it up?

Lauren: I can think of one reason. But it is her choice to make what path is right for her at the moment.

Jack: Yeah, well, whatever path she chooses, I’m gonna support her.

Lauren: Hmm. So you’d be fine if she left genoa city? You wouldn’t be up nights, wondering, “what if”?

Jack: I would miss her a lot. In fact, I miss her a lot right now, and she hasn’t been gone that long.

Lauren: Wow, we’re making progress. You actually admitted you have feelings for her.

Jack: Oh, that’s no big secret. My feelings for phyllis are very complicated and very deep.

Lauren: Mm. And what would you say if she walked through the door right now?

Jack: Oh, I’d have a lot to say.

Lauren: Like what?

Jack: It doesn’t matter. It isn’t happening.

Lauren: I wouldn’t be so sure. I’m amber, I’ve lost 128 pounds with golo,

Lauren: Hey, we were just talking about you.

Phyllis: Hey! Oh, my goodness. Hello!

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Lauren: I’m so glad you’re home.

Jack: Yeah, when’d you get back?

Phyllis: A few hours ago. I am so jet-lagged, but I can’t go to sleep, I can’T.

Lauren: Well, there is a new cocktail here made with espresso — might do the trick.

Phyllis: Oh, I’ll have five.

[ Laughter ] I’m not kidding. So am I intruding?

Lauren: No.

Jack: No.

Phyllis: No, okay. Is this a lauren-jack conversation, just two friends, or is it a fenmore’s-jabot collaboration?

Jack: Absolutely the former. Lauren and I were just catching up.

Lauren: But I do have a dinner meeting with some potential partners, and — oh, here they are right now.

Phyllis: Ah, oh.

Jack: Chelsea, chloe, long time. I assume you’re looking for new opportunities now that newman media has been swallowed up by the newman/locke juggernaut?

Chloe: Yes, that is true. Our fashion platform is no more. Rip. But the upside is we get to focus on our real passion, which is design.

Jack: Good for you. Good luck with that.

Phyllis: So it’s just the two of you?

Chelsea: Yep, we are a duo yet again. Sally’s no longer in the picture.

Phyllis: Mm, sally’s not in the picture. Well, that’s good. You got rid of her. So, chelsea, I hear that you are staying at my hotel indefinitely.

Chelsea: That’s right. I am selling the penthouse, so you will be my landlord for the foreseeable future.

Phyllis: So, you got rid of adam, you got rid of sally — all that toxicity out of your life. Good for you.

Chelsea: Can’t even imagine.

Phyllis: Mm.

Lauren: Well, let’s get to it. I reserved that table right there. I want to hear all about italy, and we can talk tomorrow, okay?

Phyllis: Yeah, sure. Alone at last.

Jack: I want to hear all about your adventures, but before we do that, why don’t we sit down, have a drink?

Phyllis: Okay.

Chelsea: Lauren, thank you so much for meeting with us.

Chloe: Yes, we came to you first because we admire you and respect you so much.

Lauren: Alright, you don’t have to lay it on so thick.

Lauren: Of course. I’m excited to hear what your proposal is. Now, I looked over the financial plan that you sent me, and why don’t we start there?

Phyllis: Thank you so much. Okay. Mmm. So great — that hits the spot.

Jack: So are you gonna leave me hanging or are you gonna tell me about your trip?

Phyllis: Well, it was wonderful, very challenging, enlightening.

Chance: Hey, rey. What a surprise. Times in one day. How’s the baby doing?

Abby: Oh, just put him down. He’s sleeping peacefully, no discomfort.

Chance: Any news from devon about next steps for the treatment?

Abby: Yeah, I did hear from him. He has an appointment tomorrow to talk about donating his bone marrow, and then we’ll take it from there.

Chance: Good. I’m anxious to get things underway.

Abby: Yeah, um…so where were you? Are you okay?

Chance: Yeah. I’m, uh, the same as I was when rey came by earlier today. Now he’s back. What’s up with that?

Abby: Okay, um…look, I — i wanted to talk to rey because i had some questions about what happened at the stakeout.

Chance: Mm-hmm. What’d rey have to say about it?

Rey: Not much. I didn’t feel like it was my place.

Abby: Look, I know that you’re having a hard time talking to me, so please talk to your partner. I’m gonna go check on dominic.

Chance: I mean, I cannot believe you. Talking to my wife about me behind my back. I mean, what the hell are you doing, man? Why are all these flowers here?

Rey: There’s no dark, ulterior motive here. Abby asked me to talk to you. We’re both concerned about you, and I thought I could help.

Chance: Yeah, well, there’s no need. I’m just fine. Now, I’m sure you have more important things to take care of, like your own family. So why don’t you go deal with them and I’ll deal with mine — how ’bout that?

Rey: Look, I can tell that you’re angry —

Chance: You’re damn right I’m angry, rey.

Rey: But my house is in order, partner. Yours is not.

Chance: You don’t know that.

Rey: I do. Because even with everything going on with your baby, your wife tracked me down to say, “the man that I love is in trouble. Will you please help him?” Think about that. Think about the kind of situation that you’re putting her in.

Chance: You know what, rey? She shouldn’t have come to you, ’cause you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

Rey: She doesn’t know what else to do! She can tell something is wrong with you, but you won’t open up to her. Why won’t you?

Chance: Rey, I am trying not to upset my wife right now.

Rey: She already is.

Chance: She is dealing with too much because of the baby, man. And I don’t want to add this to her plate, too.

Rey: Man, you don’t get it. You’re in this together. This isn’t about her plate and your plate — it’s all one big plate.

Chance: Rey [Sighs] You don’t understand the situation, okay?

Rey: I understand that if you don’t open up to her, she’s not gonna be in the picture at all.

Chance: Don’t say that.

Rey: You need to tell her what you’re feeling. She can help. You can only suppress what’s going on inside you for so long before you explode.

Chelsea: Those growth projections and start-up costs are a range, of course. We’re thinking we may be 5% to 10% over on initial budget.

Chloe: Yeah, we could be underselling the growth estimate by 15% to 20%.

Lauren: Well, the financials are reasonable, given that your line delivers.

Chelsea: Oh, it will.

Lauren: Uh-huh. And that is exactly the kind of optimism you need to start a new business.

Chelsea: And we didn’t mention our brand will differ from jcv, which would broaden fenmore’s appeal. If you want to take a look at these sketches, we’re really looking to target a new kind of customer.

Lauren: Yeah, okay, I get that. And what about a name? You thought about it?

Chloe: Yes, actually, we are going with something new.

Chelsea: We’re leaving chelsea 2.0 behind, even though it was very successful for us.

Chloe: So we are leaning with bella milconno, the name of our three kids.

Lauren: Hmm. You know, chelsea, I really see you in these designs. And if I look close enough, i see chloe’s editorial.

Chloe: Is that a good thing?

Chelsea: We have more. We can send to you other things.

Lauren: No, that won’t be necessary.

Chloe: Okay, well, lauren, listen, if you have any other questions, we can show you more numbers, more designs. Whatever you need, we can provide.

Lauren: You really don’t need to do that. I’ve seen enough.

Phyllis: Well, it was really great spending so much time with summer and kyle and that little harrison. Oh, just being with my daughter gave me so much joy.

Jack: I love hearing that.

Phyllis: Yeah. And I got a real sense of how they live in milan, and — and that was really fun.

Jack: And a sense of how you might fit into that life if you took the job at marchetti.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] You know, I have to be honest with you, initially, that job offer, it was very intimidating to me. Yeah.

Jack: You’ve never been intimidated by anything. I have seen you in more different jobs, succeeding in more different arenas. There’s no job you couldn’t handle.

Phyllis: Oh, that’s very lovely of you to say. Thank you.

Jack: So did you reach a decision? Are you gonna move to italy?

Phyllis: Taking that job, there’s a lot to consider.

Jack: I can imagine.

Phyllis: Okay, well, I would have to be fluent in italian, of course. And I’d be overseeing a bunch of young hot-shots, so I’d be immersed in the fashion industry, and…it’d be challenging.

Jack: You could do it, red.

Phyllis: Oh, I know that, i know that. It’S… do I want to do it? Do I want to? I mean, I could learn everything about the fashion industry, but I don’t know if I want to. It’s a lot to consider.

Jack: Well, you have been saying there’s nothing that ties you to genoa city any longer.

Phyllis: Yeah, that’s what I’ve been saying. But there is one element that i forgot about — myself. I mean, genoa city is my home. My life is rooted here. It’s made me the person I am, for better or for worse. And did I want to go to milan and change me? That was the question.

Jack: Sounds pretty well thought out.

Phyllis: Yeah. It took me going to italy to figure it out.

Jack: Well, to be honest, before you left, it was everything in me not to tell you exactly the same thing. I figured you had to learn that for yourself or you wouldn’t accept it.

Phyllis: Right, thanks. I mean, I don’t listen to people well. I don’t know if you know that.

Jack: You don’t say.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: So are you gonna stay?

Rey: I disagree. Look, I know you’ve been through some intense situations as a soldier, a cop, a fed. I mean, you’ve seen things that most people can’t even imagine. And maybe you thought you could tough this one out like you had before, but whatever happened in spain is too traumatic for one person to just handle on their own. It’s eating you up alive, man.

Chance: You know what? I’m handling it, rey.

Rey: You can tell yourself that, but whatever’s going on here doesn’t just fade away, it doesn’t disappear. In fact, it’s gonna keep impacting your life, your family, your health, until you start dealing with it.

Chance: I appreciate what you’re doing, rey, but this is between me and my wife.

Rey: Exactly. She needs to be a part of this. Listen, you can refuse to listen to me, but she needs you and you need her. She needs all of you, man, not just some hollowed-out shell of what you used to be.

Chance: Is that what you think I am? A shell of my former self?

Rey: I think you’re gonna need to do a lot of work before you can come back to the force. And part of that work is gonna be letting your guard down and showing your wife how you really feel.

Abby: Dominic’s still sleeping peacefully. How’s everything here? Do you need more time?

Rey: No, it’s — it’s alright. I’ve said my piece and then some. I’ll let you two talk.

Phyllis: As much as I love the thought of working with my daughter, um…I’m staying here because I love my hotel. I love my friends. I love my life here. I’m staying.

Jack: You’re staying.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, I’m gonna rack up a lot of frequent flyer miles, but I’m staying. You know, working for a big fashion house, that’s not my dream. That’s my daughter’s dream. So ciao, marchetti.

Jack: For what it’s worth, I’m glad to hear that.

Phyllis: Yep. I’m here. They’re gonna have to chase me out of town, which may be soon.

Jack: [ Laughs ] Well, this town would be a lot more boring without you.

Phyllis: Oh, for sure.

Jack: So how you feeling? Doing okay with the time zone?

Phyllis: Oh, yeah, I’m good. Why are you asking?

Jack: Well, we said we were gonna have dinner when you got back, and I’m sure you’re hungry, but if you want to put it off for another time —

Phyllis: No, no, I’m famished. Let’s have dinner.

Jack: Okay.

Lauren: I really appreciate the presentation that you’ve put forth here tonight. I am so impressed with all of your hard work. It’s sensational. You have a clear vision, and i can’t wait to see what you bring to fenmore’S.

Chloe: So we have a deal?

Lauren: [ Laughs ] I will have my legal team draw up the papers.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Chloe: This is amazing.

Chelsea: This is wonderful news. Thank you, lauren.

Lauren: You deserve it.

Chloe: Well, I just know that family gatherings will be so much smoother because had you turned us down, that would have been nine kinds of awkward.

[ Laughter ]

Lauren: You know, I actually didn’t even think about that when I was making my decision. I think this is gonna be very profitable for all of us.

Chelsea: Well, we are so grateful. Um, this is — this is more than just a job for me. This is a chance to rebuild my life, so I am going to pour my heart and soul into this business. And I know trust has to be earned, but I promise, I will prove myself to you.

Lauren: You know something, chelsea? If I didn’t think that you had changed, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. So there’s nothing more to say. Just show up and do the work.

[ Laughs ] If you have type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure…

Lauren: Have a deal memo drawn up tomorrow, and we’ll work out the details of the contract later. Alright, thanks, jeff.

[ Laughter ]

Jack: You made the right decision. You belong here, and you seem a lot more relaxed than the last time I saw you.

Phyllis: Oh, I don’t doubt that. It was just great to spend time with summer. It was just so much fun, and that little harrison — how adorable is he? You know, he was trying to teach me italian.

Jack: Ah, yes — “aree-bo-dirtsi.”

Phyllis: Oh, my gosh, it’s so cute. He is so cute. The night before I left, I was talking to summer and we were sitting on the sofa, and he came down and he just put his head on my lap, he fell asleep. Oh. Just adorable. I just want to chew him up.

Jack: Harrison has that effect on people.

Phyllis: And he’s so charming. So charming. And where’d he get that, his grandpa jack?

Jack: You don’t have to flatter me to get what you want.

Phyllis: Which is?

Jack: What else? Dessert.

Phyllis: Dessert. Yes, you know me so well.

Chelsea: [ Laughs ]

Chloe: This is the best! We have infinite possibilities in front of us.

Chelsea: And with fenmore’s backing, we have infinite resources behind us. We can really make it work this time.

Chloe: So when do you want to get started?

Chelsea: Right now.

Chloe: Okay, you don’t want to celebrate first?

Chelsea: Well, for me, working is celebrating.

Chloe: Okay. You know what? Why don’t you grab a table? I’ll get us some teas, and we’ll get right to it.

Chelsea: Okay.

Chloe: Hey, chelsea.

Chelsea: Yeah?

Chloe: Good job today. You crushed it.

Chelsea: You too, partner.

Rey: You are the most complicated and intriguing woman that I have ever met. I’m mesmerized. I can’t stop thinking about you. There is something from your dark past that…fascinates me.

Chelsea: [ Gasps ]

Rey: Hey. Chelsea?

Chelsea: Hi. Rey, hi.

Rey: [ Chuckles ] Why are you so excited?

Chelsea: I’m not. What do you mean?

Rey: Well, I saw you and chloe walk in here, practically jumping up and down for joy.

Chelsea: Right, yeah. We actually just had a great business meeting. Do you remember that new venture I was telling you about?

Rey: Yeah.

Chelsea: Well, we are officially now in business.

Chloe: Yeah, our new line is going to be available in fenmore’s soon. So we’re back in the game.

Rey: Wow. Well, congratulations. That’s great news.

Chloe: Yeah.

Rey: I mean, I know how hard you’ve been working. It’s great to see it pay off.

Chelsea: Well, thanks, rey.

Rey: And you’re out of newman media, away from adam.

Chloe: Hallelujah.

Rey: Mm, that’s great news all around. I mean, I’m really happy for the two of you. There’s nothing that you both can’t achieve together. This is a new chapter for you, chelsea. You should be proud of yourself. I know connor will be.

Chance: The last thing i wanted to do was cause you any more stress.

[ Sighs ] That’s why I was trying to keep all this to myself, away from you.

Abby: I know. But you can’t protect me from my own feelings. I love you, and I am gonna worry about you, especially when you shut down and you stop talking to me. I have no idea what happened at that stakeout, but my imagination is conjuring up all sorts of things because I don’t know the truth.

Chance: I know. I know, and I’m really sorry.

Abby: Hey, just stop. I don’t need you to apologize or feel guilty. I know that this is hard on you.

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Abby: Do you remember what you said to me the other night? You said that we need to lean on each other. And do what’s best for dominic, which means doing what’s best for us. So listen to your own words. Lean on me, let me be strong for you.

Chance: It’s not that easy, baby. It’s not.

Abby: Look, I know that you said you wanted to handle this on your own. You wanted to deal with it, and I have tried to step back and respect that, but things are just getting worse. And whatever happened at the stakeout the other night, it brought you back to things that happened in spain. And I don’t know what the next few months are gonna look like for us, for our son. But the only way that we’re gonna get through this is if we do it together, as a united front, strong. We lean on each other, no barriers. Chance, you have to let me in. With depression, you just feel…blah.

Chloe: Okay. Sorry, it looks like I need to cut our work session short. Kevin is overwhelmed with both kids at home.

Chelsea: Isn’t esther there?

Chloe: Oh, she’s out to dinner with her friends.

Chelsea: Oh.

Chloe: Why is it that men can’t multitask?

Chelsea: Because they are simple creatures.

Chloe: Oh. You want a ride home?

Chelsea: I’m okay. I’m gonna stay, have some more tea, and get some stuff done.

Chloe: Okay. Well, I’ll call you first thing in the morning.

Chelsea: Sounds good. Have a good night.

Rey: Sure. You need some help with your fashion designs?

Chelsea: [ Laughs ] No, but if I did, you would obviously be my first call.

Rey: I mean, obviously.

Chelsea: [ Laughs ]

Rey: Wow, oh.

Chelsea: Check it out.

Chance: You want to know what happened?

Abby: Yes. Please tell me.

Chance: I mean, what happened was I thought I would be just fine. I mean, there wasn’t much to it. It was watch a guy, you catch him in the act, then you round him up. I’ve done it a million times. And I got to the site. I had to act like everything was okay. Because it wasn’T. I wasn’T. I just got real tense, and i felt this — this fear just rising up in me. It… I was reliving spain all over again. I was there, I felt it all. And then I spiraled. I thought I was putting rey and the others in danger. I thought I could get them killed. Abby, just like my team. And then I heard a loud noise. I froze. I was paralyzed. I…couldn’t move. I couldn’t back up my partner. I couldn’t do anything. I was stuck there, scared. It scared the hell out of me. I don’t know.

[ Sighs ]

Abby: I hate that you went through that. But I’m really glad that you shared it with me. Chance, look at me. You are a strong, brave man. But your family needs you to find a way to cope with this so you can heal. And you need to do it now.

Phyllis: Well, this is lovely. This is a perfect “welcome back home” dinner.

Jack: You’re right, this has been one of the loveliest evenings I’ve had in a long time.

Phyllis: How nice.

[ Sighs ] I belong here.

Victor: Well.

Victoria: Daddy. What brings you by?

Victor: What do you mean, “what brings me by”? Do I need a reason to visit my beautiful daughter and the company that bears my name?

Victoria: You are here to ask me if I know about ashland financing the company in peru, the one that developed his treatment. I know about it already. He told me himself.

Victor: Hmm. So you’re realizing that he lied to you.

Victoria: You know, I don’t even know why you’re scrutinizing my husband’s treatment in the first place. I thought you were going to stop digging around in his past, and yet here we are again. It feels like sort of a betrayal.

Victor: I’m not here to discuss ashland, okay? I’m here to ask you how it’s going — the newman/locke acquisition of newman media.

Victoria: Everything is proceeding as expected, and if you’re referring to adam, he has been on his best behavior so far. However, now that you ask, the most peculiar thing has happened.

[ Objects clattering ]

Adam: Come in.

Sally: Good morning.

Adam: You are the last person that I expected to come through that door.

Sally: Because now that we’ve broken the seal on our relationship, we should avoid each other?

Adam: Because you rarely knock.

Sally: We…did things yesterday. We fraternized…a lot. And we crossed many…many lines.

Adam: Do you regret it?

Sally: Not one bit.

Adam: Then can we just relax? Because nothing has changed, except the fact that we don’t have to pretend we don’t want to rip each other’s clothes off every time we are alone together.

Sally: Well, then I guess we are having our first disagreement, because I am of the mind that finally being together did not put water on the fire. If anything, it was gasoline and it added to the flames.

Adam: Which is a bad thing?

Sally: Incendiary. Things are going to be hot. And stay that way. As long as we are within 10 feet of each other.

Adam: Our valentine’s day celebration did have an extraordinary aspect to it. A rare, um, intensity, something that you would find in an earthquake. Or a tsunami.

Sally: Or a wildfire, consuming everything in its path.

Adam: You would not believe me how long it took to clean this office. Everywhere I looked, it was just disorder.

[ Clears throat ] Not that I am complaining.

Sally: Well, the thing about earthquakes is there tend to be aftershocks.

Adam: Mm. Well, that sounds like something to look forward to.

Sally: But they can be dangerous, too. I mean, the good thing is that you know that they’re coming, so you can anticipate them. We were careful yesterday when we ran into chelsea afterwards not to give off any signs that things have progressed between us, but it is hard to hide tsunami- or wildfire-level activity.

Adam: That is a good point.

Sally: So how are we gonna handle this? Or the bigger question is… what exactly is this?

Victor: What has adam done?

Victoria: He made his first big hire.

Victor: Anyone I know?

Victoria: Mm-hmm. Sally spectra. He appointed her his coo.

Victor: He hired sally spectra? Who the hell is she? What does she know about running a company? She has no experience. He hired her without me knowing?

Victoria: Well, maybe ashland isn’t the person in this company that you need to be focusing on.

Victor: Is that boy out of his mind? Nice to see you.

Nick: Hey, mom.

Nikki: Nicholas.

Nick: You busy?

Nikki: No, I always have time for you. What’s going on?

Nick: Do I need a reason to come and visit my mom?

Nikki: You know, I’ve been wondering the same thing. Why can’t that handsome nicholas come and visit? Might it be because he is trying to avoid his father?

Nick: Mm, actually, we’re getting along pretty well these days. Is he around?

Nikki: No, he had to go over to victoria’s office.

Nick: Ah, probably just to remind her who’s still actually in charge.

Nikki: Now, your father is still a very important part of newman enterprises. He’s there as an advisor.

Nick: Curious to see how this new corporate hierarchy is gonna work, you know? With vick and adam forced to work together.

Nikki: Yeah, there will be some challenges.

Nick: Well, I’m more concerned about you, mom. It’s inevitable that adam and vick are gonna start fighting, and neither one of them fights very fairly. I’m concerned you could end up in the crossfire. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Nick: Yeah, I’m real fired up about the work that new hope is doing. We’re helping a lot of people.

Nick: Well, somebody had to save his soul.

Nikki: I’m also very happy that you made your peace with him and with victoria and adam, too, to an extent.

Nick: Yeah, I’m working real hard to get along with all of them, even though they rarely make it very easy on me.

Nikki: I also noticed that you seemed a bit lost over the holidays, but I think your trip to milan to visit summer really snapped you out of that. Spending time with your children is very grounding.

Nick: It is. Working with noah, spending time with faith and christian, they keep me on track, you know? They remind me of what’s important and how lucky I am, so any time I feel lost or confused, I’ve got these four amazing reset buttons, and just like that, I’m good to go.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Victoria: Oh. Oh, there you are. You know, you just missed my father.

Ashland: Hmm.

Victoria: Mm-hmm. He claimed that he came by to check on the newman media acquisition. You know, also, he never mentioned questioning you about peru. In fact, he said that he’s not on any kind of a fishing expedition.

Ashland: Well, that’s how you catch the most fish. You distract them so they never realize the bait is hanging on a deadly hook.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Well, he does have a penchant for playing things close to the vest.

Ashland: And that’s exactly what was happening this time.

Victoria: But I think maybe i turned the tables on him.

Ashland: Really? How so?

Victoria: I — I gave him a new direction in which to direct his suspicions.

Ashland: And where would that be?

Victoria: Adam and his new accomplice, sally spectra. You know that my father was not too happy to find out that he had tapped her as his new coo. And he despises being out of the loop.

Ashland: So I’ve gathered.

Victoria: Appointing sally without his permission was a doozy, trust me. I’m beginning to wonder if maybe things are not as solid between adam and my father as they both want me to believe.

Adam: Got to call what’s going on between the two of us something, huh?

Sally: Eventually.

Adam: Um, well, ladies first. I’d like to hear your ideas. I’m sure you have a few.

Sally: I have given some thought to the two of us and all of the accompanying implications and ramifications.

Adam: Alright.

Sally: I do not regret what happened here. Or over there.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: Or what occurred over there. And I definitely, definitely do not regret what happened here. ‘Cause that was —

Adam: Was spectacular.

Sally: You took the words right out of my mouth. Although [Clears throat] I do regret a little bit about what happened to the stapler.

[ Laughs ]

Adam: This is… collateral damage. No, but seriously, what’s on your mind? And be honest.

Sally: I just want to make sure that whatever happened here was not a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Adam: Well, I think we both know it wasn’t just a casual hook-up.

Sally: We do?

Adam: I have finally let go enough to be ready for this. I want to be with you.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Is there any way I can convince you to say that again?

Adam: I want you. What about you? And total, total honesty.

Sally: As tempting as it is, I do not want to continue this if it means we’re gonna be sneaking around. Because I don’t want to be your dirty little secret or your guilty pleasure or anything like that.

Adam: No, neither do I. Okay? I have too much respect for you to think of you like that.

Sally: You “respect” me?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Are you blushing?

Sally: Maybe. I don’t know, am I?

Adam: Well, I guess now would be the time to tell you that i was thinking about you last night, too. And as a matter of fact, I could not get you off my mind. The way that you smile at me when you’re walking through that door without permission.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: The two of us, inches away, doing everything we can not to touch each other. And I can’t think of any reason that I would want to keep you a secret.

Victor: I can.

Victor: Looks like your hands are full. I can come back later if you’d prefer.

Sally: I’m not really sure what you think you just heard, but it wasn’T…

Victor: Son, I think you’re aware that we are in the middle of a rather sensitive negotiation regarding the sale and merger of a big company, and we don’t need any distractions, alright?

Sally: Distractions? Is that what you think I am?

Ashland: Well, I’ve seen victor and adam at odds on a few occasions, but the fact that victor sold us newman media with the caveat that adam stay on in the same position leads me to believe that victor still trusts him.

Victoria: You know, there might be another possibility. What if my father kept adam in place so that I could keep an eye on him?

Ashland: You really think he’d do something like that?

Victoria: Well, you know, given my history with adam, absolutely. I’m the de facto bad guy. Adam steps out of line, I put him back in place or I tell my father about it and he does it for us. The thing is, as much as my father wants to believe that adam can be trusted, he knows — he knows that it’s a recipe for disaster.

Ashland: Then why give him power in the first place?

Victoria: Because maybe he wants adam to learn his lesson from the best.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] You really know your father, don’t you?

Victoria: My father and I, we’ve had our issues over the years. I have been his pawn. I have even been the rook. I’ve been the queen in his real-life game of chess. But regardless of the outcome, I’ve watched him and I see how he plays the game, far more than adam ever could.

Ashland: I think it would be a deadly mistake to underestimate him. Now, he doesn’t play this game on our level, but he’s deeply ensconced with newman media, and he does not like the idea that he has to take orders from us. No, I don’t think he’s just going to sit back and accept his fate. It’s not a question of if adam is going to make his move, it’s when.

Adam: Dad, that insult was completely uncalled for. I think you owe sally an apology.

Victor: Do you? Ms. Spectra, mind my saying so, I think you’re more than just an innocent distraction. You’ve had a hell of a career in a short time. From a dress-maker to a chief operating officer of a major company. That’s a hell of a meteoric rise. How’d you do it?

Sally: Well, the offer to step into the role took me by surprise as well. Only a fool would turn it down.

Victor: And only a fool wouldn’t realize that they’re punching way above their weight.

Adam: I have complete confidence in my decision and in sally’s abilities.

Victor: I’m sure you do.

Adam: She has vast experience in running a business.

Victor: You’re talking about running a corporation.

Adam: Mm-hmm, she has vast experience in marketing, finance, and research. She actually started a fashion house and revived it with her aunt’s brand, built it from the ground up.

Victor: Aren’t you leaving out a few salient points of her résumé? That disastrous debacle at forrester creations and her rather duplicitous actions towards my granddaughter.

Adam: Okay. Well, nobody in this room has clean hands, so if we’re gonna go around pointing fingers —

Sally: Thank you, adam. I’ve got this.

Nick: So sharon and faith threw tessa and mariah a heck of an engagement party.

Nikki: I know it. Faith tells me everything.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Did she also tell you that mariah and tessa are gonna adopt a child?

Nikki: Yes, I think it’s wonderful. I’m so happy for them.

Nick: What’s that smile about?

Nikki: Oh, nothing. Um…I was just thinking that, uh…someday soon, I’ll be able to call sharon “granny.”

Nick: [ Laughs ] That is funny.

[ Sighs ]

Nikki: What — what just happened there? What’s wrong? What are you thinking about?

Nick: Uh…cassie. I, uh — I wish more than anything that she would’ve lived long enough to get a chance to experience the things that mariah is, you know? Get a job, fall in love, start a family. I love all my kids so much, but…

Nikki: They can never take the place of the one you lost.

Nick: Yeah.

Nikki: You know, cassie will always be with you. And she’d want you to celebrate all the wonderful things that are coming your way. Embrace them, darling, because life can be so short. And one of these days, you’re gonna have so many grandchildren you’re gonna have to add a wing to the house.

Nick: That sounds awesome. Okay, I guess it’s your turn. Where did you just go?

Nikki: Nothing for you to worry about.

Nick: Mm-hmm. Usually dad’s at the center of whatever’s upsetting you.

Nikki: Alright, here it is. I knew exactly who and what victor newman was when i married — every time I married him — and I adore him. Everything we’ve been through together. But there has been another entity in our marriage.

Nick: Newman enterprises.

Nikki: Yeah. I mean, it’s not just a company. It is a part of us, it’s a part of you, even though you chose another path. And it — it takes up so much space in his head and in his heart. I just wish that he had been able to find a way to keep the family together through the company.

Sally: I won’t spend my entire life apologizing for my past actions. And that includes summer.

Victor: So you have no regrets?

Sally: I didn’t say that. I made a move to get what i wanted, what I thought i deserved, and I’m sorry that people got hurt. But summer landed on both feet. I will turn newman media into a company that people will sit up and pay attention to, not because I have a bunch of degrees or accolades, but because I have spent my entire life proving people wrong, making them sit up and notice me. With all due respect, I can do this. You will see.

Victor: If you don’t mind, i need to talk to you alone, okay, son?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Hope you’re satisfied now that sally was the right choice.

Victor: I’m dissatisfied that you didn’t consult me first.

Adam: Apparently I need your and victoria’s approval for every choice I make. Perhaps it was a mistake for me to stay on. Victoria is counting the minutes until I fail. It’s obvious that you don’t trust my judgment. So here it is, maybe newman media’s new scoop should be its own ceo’s resignation.

Victoria: Adam is nothing but trouble you know I only agreed to let him stay on to appease my father so that he would go through with the sale. But once the paperwork is done and there’s no going back on the merger…

Ashland: There’s nothing in the deal that states how long adam has to stay, just a provision that there be due cause for his dismissal.

Victoria: So we give him enough rope.

Ashland: It would be a shame if adam were to fail and give us just cause to fire him.

Victoria: What if, instead of waiting for adam to screw up, what if we just make damn well sure that he does?

Adam: I’m done justifying my hiring of sally, okay?

Victor: You’re really attached to this dress-maker, aren’t you?

Adam: She is more than that.

Victor: I bet she is.

Adam: I know that you have reasons to be suspicious, but you have only seen one side of her.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] And you’ve seen all sides, haven’t you?

Adam: The point is she is not some diabolical self-serving mercenary that everybody thinks she is. She is the right woman for this job.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Alright, son. I won’t stand in her way as long as she’s a team player and proves that she can do the job as coo of this company.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You will not regret it.

Victor: Now, we have a more pressing problem to deal with.

Adam: Like what?

Victor: Ashland locke. May as well tell you that I have never really fully trusted him.

Nikki: Now, don’t misunderstand, I am not disparaging your father’s devotion for his family. His love for all of you is unparalleled.

Nick: Family has always been dad’s priority, but the family and the business have always been intertwined.

Nikki: Exactly.

Nick: I’m just lucky, you know, I don’t ever have to worry about that. I love working with noah, but if he told me he didn’t want to do that, if he wanted to do something else, whether it’s artwork or going to live on a fishing boat, I would tell him, “cool, I just want you to be happy.”

Nikki: I know you would. Your father has had some struggles with that.

Nick: Well, you know, dad has never had to find his grounding through, you know, his kids’ happiness. He’s always had something else to balance him out and keep him sane.

Nikki: What would that be?

Nick: Well, you, of course. You’re the love of his life.

Victor: Let me just say i have discovered some inconsistencies regarding his cancer treatment.

Adam: Okay, I mean, isn’t he legitimately getting better? Why would he fake that, unless he was trying to give victoria hope?

Victor: I don’t see why he would. She had already accepted his cancer diagnosis before they were engaged.

Adam: Well, perhaps he wants to appear strong to stay in the game, until the inevitable.

Victor: I want you to stay vigilant. If you see any contradictions in what he does, any inconsistencies, I want you to report to me.

Adam: Uh, I think I would be the last person that ashland would report to. Um…he’s made it clear that he hates that I’m staying on.

Victor: Really?

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Huh.

Adam: Made it quite clear he’s gonna be keeping me on a short leash.

Victor: Well, I’ll be damned. That goes both ways. Keeping you on a short leash means that you have a very good vantage point to see how he operates, who he communicates with.

Adam: So let me just get this straight. Are you asking me to spy on locke?

Victor: Did I say that?

Adam: [ Sighs ] Is this a test of my family loyalty? Are you hoping that I will decline your request to spy on victoria’s husband to prove that I won’t betray her?

Victor: If you love your family and your sister, you do as I say. (Jackie) I’ve made progress with my mental health.

Sally: Is it safe?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Come on in.

[ Clears throat ]

Sally: If I need to clean out my desk, please just tell me now.

Adam: You’re fine.

Sally: I need to hear the words.

Adam: You are still coo of newman media.

Sally: [ Exhales sharply ] Do you mind if I shout it from the rooftops?

Adam: I think we should let our pr department handle that.

Sally: What did victor say? I wasn’t sure how my defiant, in-your-face stance came across.

Adam: He will never admit this, but I could tell that he was impressed.

Sally: This is big. Huge. Thank you.

Adam: For what?

Sally: Defending me.

Adam: Well, my father wasn’t the only one that was impressed. I’m — I’m in awe. I… it’s not a lot of people that are brave enough to go toe-to-toe with victor newman like that.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Well, don’t think that I wasn’t shaking like a leaf, ’cause my heart was going like a million beats a minute.

Adam: Really? I never would have known that.

Sally: Good.

Adam: Okay, this is just sure-fire proof that you are going to succeed. To never let them see you sweat.

Nikki: Your father and I do have something special. Not every relationship is meant to last forever.

Nick: You mean like mine? And I’m only saying that to save you from saying it.

Nikki: Oh. Now, I don’t want to be unkind, but I’m not terribly disappointed that some of your romances didn’t last longer.

Nick: Oh, I’m well aware. Thank you. Yeah.

Nikki: Darling, I wish you every happiness, I really do.

Nick: Thanks, mom. I’m good, you know, with new hope and the kids. I’m in a great place.

Nikki: I’m so happy to hear that.

Victor: Hey, my boy. What a nice surprise.

Nick: Hey, dad.

Victor: So how’s everything?

Nikki: He’s fine. He just came by to catch up.

Nick: Yeah, wanted to see how things were going with the latest newman/locke acquisition.

Victor: Couldn’t be better.

Nick: So that’s it?

Victor: What, you expected more?

Nick: It’s kind of a big move, and not just for the business, but…

Victor: But what?

Nick: Dad, vick and adam can’t be in the same room together for two minutes before they start fighting. Do you really think it’s a good move to force them to work together?

Victoria: You know something? I am so thrilled that you are on board. You have no idea how many times people have tried to stop me from doing something like this.

Ashland: This will require surgical precision, you know. If your father gets wind that we’re trying to undermine his son…

Victoria: [ Sighs ] He will not take kindly to that at all.

Ashland: Well, you and victor may rest assured that no part of the company will suffer. Once adam is shown the door and sally is not far behind him, i will be more than happy to step in and oversee newman media myself.

Victoria: It’s just a larger version of your former company.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] Ah, being in charge of a media group again, that would be my pleasure. Besides, I am quite used to maintaining a strong hand over everything I control.

Victoria: Everything you control?

Victor: Well, son, I’m surprised you still give a damn about the family business that you decided to walk away from.

Nick: I left the job. I’ll never leave the family.

Victor: Well, if you want to keep peace between your siblings, then you’ll always have a place at newman, you know.

Nick: Yeah, I appreciate it. It’s just not in the cards.

Victor: Okay. Never say never.

Nick: Well, I’m sure you know I’m way more concerned about victoria getting hurt than I am the welfare of the business.

Victor: I’m glad to hear that. I, on the other hand, am keeping a very keen eye on the business.

Nick: Hmm. I just get the feeling there’s a larger play here in the works.

Sally: You don’t have to sugarcoat it. You can be totally honest with me about what victor had to say about me.

Adam: Okay, he said that he would not block your confirmation as coo as long as he’s convinced that you’re a team player and you can handle the job. Satisfied?

Sally: Oh, I believe you. But I know his reputation. So what are the chances that he approved of me to your face but will now go behind our backs to destroy my very existence?

Adam: Look, I get why you are suspicious. He has done similar maneuvers in the past. But this is not one of those times.

Sally: What makes you so certain?

Adam: While you were gone, he divulged some information to me, and he has bigger things to contend with.

Sally: Something good or something bad?

Adam: Something… something interesting.

Ashland: Have I upset you?

Victoria: You know this isn’t your company. It belongs to both of us.

Ashland: Okay, I didn’t mean to come off as overly possessive. In fact, I was speaking in the past tense, so let me correct myself. I was used to maintaining a strong hand in all I ever owned. How’s that? Was that better?

Victoria: I really hope you mean that, because we’re in this together.

Ashland: Yeah. 100%.

[ Chuckles ] Oh, come on, two minutes ago, you were talking about how great it felt to have me on your side. I am on your side, despite a slip of the tongue. Believe me.

Victoria: I want to believe you, I really do, but your last confession has me a little bit wary.

Ashland: Yes, I, uh… I am sorry that I didn’t share with you about my financing the clinic in peru. It was a — it was a stupid mistake on my part, and I deeply regret it, but listen to me. Don’t allow your father to sow seeds of doubt about me in your mind. Adam is the untrustworthy one.

[ Cellphone rings ] I better take this. I love you.
