Update written by Joseph

At the police station, Harris finishes a call and tells the rest of the cops that it’s time to go.

Sloan and Eric set up for dinner at home with John and Marlena. Eric encourages her to calm down as it’s just a casual dinner. Sloan worries that they are like royalty in Salem so everything has to be perfect. Marlena and John then arrive at the door. Sloan worries that they are early as Eric greets them with hugs.

At the Bistro, Stefan tells Ava that the loading dock is locked up for the night. Ava talks about how they might need to find a new food supplier. Stefan comments on being a distribution center for drugs. Stefan confirms to Ava that the shipment came in a few hours ago so he stashed everything in the back locker.

Brady joins Alex and Theresa in the interrogation room, asking what’s going on. Alex says that Justin just called them to meet. Justin comes in and says it’s good they are all here. Theresa desperately asks him to tell them what’s going on with her son. Tate then arrives, exciting Theresa and Brady as they embrace him. Tate says he missed them as they tell him they love him. Theresa asks Justin why Tate is there and if something changed in his case. Justin says it’s good news and announces that he filed a motion to have Tate moved to a juvenile rehab facility and the judge signed off on it. Theresa and Brady thank Justin. Brady then asks about EJ and if EJ gets the judge to revoke his decision like he did Tate’s bail.

Marlena tells Sloan that baby Jude is beautiful. Sloan asks if they want any drinks. Marlena accepts a sparkling water. Sloan mentions opening a bottle of wine but Marlena declines, saying she has a long day tomorrow and John notes that he hasn’t been drinking lately. Marlena says she is hungry as Eric goes to get the appetizers. Sloan tells Marlena and John that they are over the moon that they could make it as they’ve been waiting a long time to have them over. Marlena is glad they could as well while John comments on the place looking nice. Sloan says it works for them, though it’s a little small but fine until they get something bigger. Eric brings over the cheese and hummus while Sloan drinks her wine. Eric asks how their New Year’s was before everything went crazy. Marlena says it was fine but Theresa and Tate got back late and they were very concerned with what happened to Holly. Marlena doesn’t know how Nicole is going to handle all of this. Sloan calls it very awful and sad, but says that won’t happen to them because they will do anything to protect their son from drugs, people, and all bad stuff. Eric agrees they will do their best. Sloan insists they will move Heaven and Earth an do whatever it takes, even lie.

Stefan comments to Ava that business at the Bistro looks a little better. Ava admits she’s surprised after what happened and she doesn’t think people would want to die here. Stefan says people come for the atmosphere and the food and he upped the security on the loading dock, so hopefully they don’t have to worry about that. Ava says she’ll drink to that, but Harris then arrives with the police and orders for everyone to not move as this is a raid. Ava asks what the hell he’s doing. Harris responds that he’s doing his job. Ava accuses him of harassing a business without reason. Harris informs her that he has a reason and a warrant which they can review. Stefan says his attorney will take care of that. Ava tells everyone that this is just a misunderstanding and everything is fine. Harris tells everyone to remain seated while they conduct a search. Harris sends cops to check the loading dock and the kitchen. Ava asks Stefan what they are going to do. Stefan responds that there’s nothing they can do and they’re screwed.

Theresa argues that EJ better back off because he’s not putting Tate back in jail. Brady adds that they will fight him with everything they’ve got. Justin says he wouldn’t put anything past EJ but assures that he made a strong case with the judge or else he wouldn’t have signed off on this order. Justin says what comes next is getting Tate to the juvie rehab facility. Tate questions why he has to go to rehab when he doesn’t drink or use drugs. Justin explains that it’s also a center for behavioral issues. Tate argues that he doesn’t have behavior issues either so he questions what he’s going to do there. Justin explains that they have therapeutic group and work sessions. Tate complains that he doesn’t need any of that. Brady assures it will be okay. Theresa adds that it will be paradise compared to jail. Justin calls it the best solution they have right now. Tate insists he did nothing wrong. Justin says they understand. Theresa says they need him to be safe. Justin says they need to move things along so he asks either Brady or Theresa to pack Tate’s things because he will be leaving on a police transport tonight.

Marlena questions Sloan saying she would lie to protect her son and asks what that means. Sloan says she would tell a little white lie to protect him, not that she’s in favor of lies. Eric suggests Sloan eat something but she says she’s not hungry. Sloan hoped she could talk to Marlena about being a first time mom and bets she has a lot of good tips as a mom who had twins. Marlena brings up her son who died which Sloan says she’s sorry for as she didn’t know that. Eric mentions that he didn’t fill her in on that. Sloan says he should have so she wouldn’t have put her foot in it. Marlena encourages that she didn’t. Sloan rambles on that Marlena knows what to say because she’s like perfect, unlike her. Eric suggests they start dinner. John agrees that he’s starved. Sloan mentions that they have a lot of food. Sloan suggests Eric first tell his parents the big news about the pictures and the camera. Eric guesses she means him setting up his photography business again. Marlena is glad to hear that as she knows that was always stimulating and satisfying for Eric’s creativity. Eric talks about setting up and seeing how it goes. Sloan interrupts to tell jokes. Eric thinks she’s had enough wine and suggests she drink water. Sloan tells Marlena that she is very intimidating. Marlena disagrees but agrees that maybe Sloan should lay down. Sloan complains that she doesn’t feel like it and she thinks Marlena should laugh at her jokes. Eric tells Sloan to be nice. Sloan ends up spilling water so Eric pulls her away and tells her she’s going to lie down. Sloan starts to cry about wanting everything to be perfect and missing the dinner. John tells her it’s no big deal but Sloan cries that she wanted everything to be perfect and she just keeps screwing it up. Eric hugs Sloan as she cries.

Ava questions why Harris is doing this and if it’s because she broke up with him. Harris says he knows there’s something not right with this place, especially since it’s owned by a DiMera. Harris tells Ava to just tell him the truth so he can help her. Ava tells him that he’s acting like a spoiled child and accuses him of punishing her for breaking up with him. Harris says he would never hurt her and asks her to let him help her out of this mess. Harris tells Ava that she deserves better than this place and Stefan. Stefan tells Harris that this is over and tells him to get out before he sues the city over this.

Justin states that the bus is leaving tonight so they will need to pack up Tate’s essentials. Theresa questions where this rehab is. Justin says it’s in Southern Illinois. Theresa says she will follow the bus there and make sure Tate is settled in. Justin explains that she can’t do that because it’s not protocol and there will be no outside visitation for the first month of residency. Theresa can’t believe that she can’t see her son for a whole month. Tate assures that he’ll be okay as long as no one punches him and he’ll be out of there as soon as possible. Tate doesn’t want Theresa to worry. Theresa guesses that she has to be brave and strong like he is as they hug.

Marlena goes to get some water while Sloan complains to Eric that it’s not her fault. Jude wakes up crying, so Eric says he will take care of him while Sloan needs to sit down. Sloan complains of him treating her like a child while Eric points out that she drank an entire bottle of wine in 20 minutes. Marlena brings Sloan water to drink. Sloan continues to complain of Marlena being intimidating. John suggests he and Marlena take Jude for a walk which Eric and Sloan agree to. Sloan then finishes her glass of wine.

John and Marlena walk through the town square with Jude in his stroller and talk about how Jude fell back asleep. Marlena calls it strange how Jude’s smile reminds her of Eric. John notes that Eric wasn’t smiling much tonight. They feel sorry for Eric. John wonders why Sloan got so wasted. Marlena responds that she doesn’t know her but imagines she was nervous and wanted to impress them. John remarks that she made a pretty bad first impression. Marlena adds that she’ll be mortified when she sobers up. John wonders if it was a one off or if Sloan has a drinking problem. Marlena says she hopes not for Eric and Jude’s sake.

Eric encourages Sloan to lie down but Sloan wants to dance. Eric says it’s time to sleep but Sloan doesn’t want to. Eric tells her that she’s drunk and needs to sober up. Eric questions why she drank the entire bottle of wine. Sloan responds that she was afraid that Marlena would think she wasn’t good enough for him. Eric argues that John and Marlena are very kind people so they will understand. Sloan then rushes to the bathroom to throw up.

Ava worries to Stefan about going to prison but Harris reveals that they completed their investigation and found no drugs. Harris calls the cops off and thanks everyone for their patience, saying they will be out of there shortly and they can return to the dinner. Harris apologizes to Ava, who questions that being all he can do after defaming them in public. Ava tells Harris that his words mean nothing and to come up with something better to pay for what he just did.

Alex tells Brady that it’s going to be a long night and brings him a coffee. Brady calls it just the beginning. Alex states that Tate is a good kid caught in a bad situation, but he has faith that Justin will make things a lot better for him. Brady is glad that Alex is coming around about Justin’s capabilities. Alex admits he was unfairly critical at first but he’s come to recognize that Justin can do this. Theresa comes back with a bag of everything Tate will need. Tate tells Theresa that he’s just telling himself that things are going to work out. Justin gets an e-mail from EJ. Theresa worries about EJ coming after her child. Justin announces that EJ has accepted the judge’s order and will not appeal it which relieves them. Theresa hugs Justin and thanks him for saving her son. Alex calls Justin a damn good lawyer and apologizes for ever doubting that. Justin accepts his apology and says no matter what is happening between them, he’s always here for him as they hug. Justin goes to check on the police transport to find out when it will be ready to go. Brady decides to call John and Marlena as he’s sure they will want to see Tate off. John answers the call. Brady asks if they are at home. John informs them that they are taking Jude for an evening stroll. Brady informs him that he and Theresa are at the jail and they are happy to report that Tate is being transferred to a juvenile facility, so they thought they might want to see him off. John calls that great news and says they’ll definitely want to be there, so they’ll be there as soon as they can. Brady hangs up and informs Tate that his grandparents are on their way.

Harris tells Ava that he doesn’t have to pay for anything because he executed his orders properly. Harris adds that when Ava is ready to talk about what’s going on, she knows where to find him. Stefan argues that their lawyers know where to find him and tells Harris to get out and not come back. Harris then exits the Bistro. Ava apologizes to everyone for the interruption of their dinner, says it a mistake, and tells them to go back to enjoying their meals. Ava insists that it’s not a reflection of their management and to accept their apologies. Ava adds that dinner is on them tonight while Stefan finishes a phone call. Stefan informs Ava that he just finished a conversation with their partner and it turns out that Clyde got inside information, found out about the raid, and had a guy come in to move the product out just in time. Ava remarks that he sure runs a tight ship.

Eric gets Sloan to lay down and asks if she’s feeling better. Sloan says she’s so sorry about tonight. Eric tells her it’s okay. Sloan admits she tried too hard and made a mess of everything, so now Marlena and John probably think she’s crazy. Sloan doesn’t remember what she said other than trying to tell a joke. Sloan realizes she should not drink alcohol as she clearly can’t hold her liquor. Sloan feels she’s made much bigger mistakes than that and asks Eric to promise not to be mad if she tells him. Eric says he won’t be mad as she’s the woman he loves. Sloan calls that really sweet and starts to tell him but they are interrupted by a knock at the door. John and Marlena return with Jude. Eric thanks them for taking Jude out. Marlena says he’s been sleeping peacefully since they left. John says they are going to cut this short as Brady just called and said Tate is being transferred to a juvie facility tonight, so they are going to the station to say goodbye to him. Eric says he’ll let Sloan know but then they see Sloan has fallen asleep. Marlena suggests letting Sloan sleep as she needs it. Eric says he’s glad to hear about Tate and sends his love to Tate and Brady. John tells him to call anytime that he wants them to babysit. Eric thanks them and assures he’ll be fine. Marlena says she loves him as she and John exit. Eric sits with Jude to feed him and talks about how much they love him. Eric talks about having rough days and says Jude will always have him to lean on. Sloan repeats in her sleep that she’s so sorry.

Ava asks Stefan how someone moved the product so quickly and quietly. Stefan then gets a call from prison and it’s Gabi, so he steps away to answer it. Ava then gets a text from an unknown number, saying to meet at the loading dock now.

Marlena and John go to the police station to say goodbye to Tate. Tate thanks them for coming. Marlena says they are so happy he’s going to the facility. Tate says he is too but he’s not sure about group therapy. Marlena encourages it being positive. John says they’ll see him as soon as he’s out. Justin tells Tate that his bag is on the bus and it’s time to go. Theresa tells Tate to be strong. Brady hugs Tate and assures that they are there for him and they will not rest until he’s free and he will be home soon. Tate tells them to keep him updated on Holly. Justin then escorts Tate out of the station. Brady tells Theresa that he’s going to make it and they will get through it together. Alex hugs Theresa.

Ava goes out to the loading dock and is approached by Harris.

Tucker: Hey, Billy.

Billy: Well, well, well. Look what the cat tried to keep out, but you snuck in anyway, huh?

Tucker: Slow day at the office?

Billy: No, not at all. It’s nice and early. I guess not having a real job, your body clock must be all out of whack.

Tucker: I have a real job. You just don’t know what it is. Or where I’ll turn up next.

Billy: I’m sure if I look under enough rocks, I’ll find you soon enough

*****†**********************************

Billy: What’s the point of revenge if I don’t know if it happened or not? I don’t see it. If I don’t feel it, it’s not worth a damn thing without results.

Tucker: Well, there are many forms of revenge, billy. Some more insidious than others.

Billy: I don’t buy it. This is just another one of your defensive sleights of hand.

Tucker: Could be.

Billy: Yeah. I’ll give you this, tucker. You’re a smooth operator.

Tucker: Thank you. And, uh, just to keep you in the game as far as the sleight of hand thing, don’t give it a second thought. I’ve already lit the fuse.

Billy: I guess we’ll find out soon enough if you’re bluffing or if this is just another one of your unhinged plots.

Tucker: Well, it doesn’t matter, either way. You could still try to destroy my reputation by releasing that damaging information. But it might be too late.

Billy: Have a good day.

Tucker: Yeah, you too. I’ll see you

Sloan asks if there’s any change with Holly. Nicole says no but they hope that she will be getting world renowned treatment in Italy in a few days. Sloan notes that Eric didn’t tell her that. Nicole says that’s because she didn’t tell him. Sloan asks if Nicole will be going with Holly. Nicole says she’s her mother so of course she is, which Sloan says is wonderful.

Leo asks what Chad and Everett think about his column. Chad admits it’s damn impressive and Everett agrees. Everett calls it the last thing he expected from Leo and declares that Leo was right that it was worth the wait.

Nicole questions if Sloan is glad that she’s leaving town. Sloan says she meant she was glad that Holly will be receiving treatment because she and Eric have been praying for her recovery. Nicole thanks her and admits that she didn’t see Sloan as the praying type. Sloan admits that she wasn’t before but having her prayers answered with her baby changed her and made her more religious. Nicole says she can see how it would. Nicole guesses Jude is with Eric. Sloan confirms that he is and that she’s just picking up a few things since they are having John and Marlena over for dinner tonight which they’ve been trying to do for awhile. Sloan admits to being a little intimidated by Marlena. Nicole says she gets it and suggests having a large glass of wine before they get there.

Abe tells Paulina that she could have the deputy mayor step in for her but Paulina says she is doing this on today of all days as she will push through, so they prepare her podcast.

Jada tells Rafe that some might say Martin Luther King would want her to just push forward, but she feels that when you see injustice, you should do something about it. Chanel and Johnny sit together as Chanel tells Johnny that she feels for Jada being racially profiled as a shoplifter. Johnny asks if anything like that ever happened to Chanel. Chanel informs him that just the other day in the town square, a lady grabbed her purse when she saw her walking by. Johnny says he’s shocked as he feels like he’s spent a lot of time with her and never seen it. Chanel insists that it happens everywhere and feels people were looking at them in Italy because they were an interracial couple. Chanel adds that when Paulina was a kid, it would’ve been illegal for them to get married in many countries. Johnny is glad they aren’t back there. Chanel states that they’ve come a long way but they can’t pretend they still don’t have a long way to go.

Sloan tells Nicole that she’s got two bottles of wine. Nicole notes that Eric doesn’t drink and his parents will probably only have a glass, so Sloan says that’s more for her. Nicole tells Sloan that Marlena knows she comes off as intimidating and perfect but she’s still a real person with real problems. Nicole brings up Marlena’s daughter Sami being a terror. Sloan notes that Eric has mentioned Sami once or twice. Nicole tells Sloan about Marlena’s affair with John sending Sami off the deep end when she was a teenager. Sloan can’t imagine Marlena having an affair. Nicole says Marlena isn’t perfect just like the rest of them. Nicole adds that she’s found if you ask Marlena for advice upfront, she’ll feel useful and the rest of the night will be smooth sailing. Sloan thanks Nicole and calls that really good advice.

Everett tells Leo this is an amazing piece and calls him a writer. Leo calls it his passion and talks about joining a writing club. Chad admits that there’s so much in the column that he’s never heard about such as an openly gay African American man in the 60s during Martin Luther King’s time. Leo talks about how people back then didn’t want to acknowledge gay rights and civil rights as being part of the same movement. Leo says that’s sadly still the case to this day. Everett is really impressed by Leo’s research in bringing this to light. Everett thinks they should publish this under Leo’s real name instead of Lady Whistleblower. Chad says that’s assuming they can publish it at all.

Paulina and Abe prepare to start her podcast. Abe asks if Paulina went to see her doctor. Paulina responds that she’ll go see her when the biopsy results come back. Abe asks when that is. Paulina reveals it’s tomorrow. Abe questions why she didn’t tell him that. Paulina says she didn’t want him to feel obligated to go with her and she didn’t want to ask him. Abe says he’s offering. Paulina assures that she does want him to be there with her, so Abe says he will be.

Chanel talks to Johnny about when her dad got sick when she was a kid and lost health insurance. Chanel feels lucky to be who and where she is. Johnny tells her that he’s the lucky one here. Rafe tells Jada that a few years ago, he was checking out a store and the clerk asked for two forms of ID and his phone number after seeing the name “Hernandez”. Jada relates and says at least his hair isn’t a whole thing. Jada calls Chanel back over and thanks her for the donuts. Jada asks Chanel if she ever had someone ask if they could touch her hair. Chanel says it’s happened since she was three. Chanel and Johnny sit together with Rafe and Jada. Chanel talks about having these conversations and asking questions. Jada remembers a time in high school when a random girl started touching her hair and then her mom gave her a lecture about standing up for herself. Jada says she’s worked up an appetite and wants to order the full breakfast menu so Johnny goes to take care of that.

Sloan thanks Nicole again for all the suggestions on how to handle Marlena, giving her less things to be worried about right now. Nicole states that it was nice to get out of the hospital but she should get back. Nicole tells Sloan that they have a lot in common and in another lifetime, maybe they would’ve been friends. Sloan guesses she means if it wasn’t for Eric. Nicole knows that Eric has been spending a lot of time at the hospital with her and Holly which she’s sure hasn’t been easy for Sloan due to their history. Nicole assures that she appreciates how generous Sloan has been about it. Sloan responds that she hasn’t been that generous.

Leo questions Everett and Chad about not publishing his article. Chad says he’s not saying they won’t publish it at all, just that they should think about it. Chad points out that the Spectator isn’t exactly on the cutting edge of progressivism. Chad asks what Everett thinks. Everett thinks it’s their job to present a fair and valid presentation of the news. Leo questions if he’s saying they have to publish an anti-equality column after posting his pro-equality column. Everett says not at all and assures that he wants to publish Leo’s column. Chad questions it and worries about the fallout but Everett says screw that because what Leo wrote is right, true, and enlightening which is more important than the bottom line. Chad ultimately agrees and tells Leo that they will publish his excellent piece regardless if they get heat for it. Leo calls them his heroes and hugs them.

Chanel tells Rafe and Jada that her and Johnny’s families are both very supportive of their relationship so they have no speed bumps there. Jada says she’s happy for them and wishes that was the case when she first got married. Jada says she wanted her dad to be accepting but her mom was not happy that she was marrying a white, Jewish guy. Rafe hopes she got over it. Jada says sort of, but her ex disappeared on her. Johnny comes back and talks about a documentary that he and Chanel recently watched about interracial marriage no longer being banned. Chanel states that as a bisexual black woman, she stopped labeling herself. Jada talks about how it can be exhausting. Johnny can’t believe they never talked about this before. Chanel says she’s really glad they are talking about it now.

Abe asks Paulina if she wants him to stay for the podcast or if he should leave her to it. Paulina assures that she wants him there and thanks him for being there for her. Abe says she was there during his recovery, so he wants to be there for her. Paulina then begins her podcast and thanks everyone who came out to support their community, encouraging everyone to volunteer. Paulina starts to struggle through a line so Abe helps her finish it.

Nicole asks what Sloan means that she hasn’t been generous when she has been understanding about Eric spending time with her and Holly. Nicole adds that Sloan also let her off the hook when she kidnapped her son. Sloan admits that was very reluctantly, especially when the next day, she saw Nicole having lunch with Eric and Holly like the happy family they used to be and admits that was very upsetting for her. Nicole understands it would be for her too and asks what Eric said about it. Sloan admits she didn’t tell him that she saw them and she doesn’t know why, but she’s glad now that he had that time with Holly because he will always love her, just like he’ll always love Nicole. Sloan declares that she will just have to learn to live with that. Sloan says she has to catch up with Leo, thanks Nicole for the advice again and walks away.

Leo calls Everett and Chad the best. Everett thinks it will be fantastic for the paper. Leo says they have made him very happy and he’s truly in debt to them for their support. Chad states that working with someone you had conflict with in the past and learning to work through it is another way to follow Martin Luther King Day which Leo agrees with. Leo then asks for the rest of the day off. Everett remarks that journalists don’t really get days off. Leo asks what about Xander. Chad says that he’s tele-working today. Leo questions if he is or if he’s playing house with Sarah and leaving the Spectator to the three of them. Everett suggests that as a topic for another column. Leo says he’ll get right to that but Chad tells Leo that he’s going to get the break he asked for and leave the office. Chad declares that it’s the Salem City Park National Day of Service as they hand Leo a broom and dustpan. Leo jokes about that being why he wanted the day off and exits the office.

Jada compliments her food and tells Johnny that she’ll write a good review. Jada thanks Johnny and Chanel for hanging out with them. Johnny brings up how he idolized Rafe as a kid. Johnny adds that he always thought he’d join the FBI like Rafe. Rafe feels he’s always been a storyteller so film maker suits him. Johnny points out that he’s out of work as a film maker and working at the Pub is the most useful he’s felt in some time. Johnny talks about considering a career change and wanting to do something that matters. Chanel talks about how what matters is up to the person and relates it to her work at the Bakery. Chanel says Paulina is all about giving back as the Mayor and mentions that she’s recording a podcast now. Rafe remembers Paulina is broadcasting live and suggests they listen to it.

Paulina continues her podcast and thanks her special guest, Abe, for the assist. Paulina talks about how inclusion and diversity should not be controversial as it’s what makes them a great city. Paulina says they all want the same things in safety and prosperity. Paulina says they shouldn’t shun those who disagree with them, but open their hearts and minds and continue to make the world a better place for everyone to live in. Paulina states that their words are more powerful when they raise their voices together. Abe holds her hand as she finishes.

Jada, Rafe, Chanel, and Johnny toast to Martin Luther King, the future, Paulina, and to them.

Summer: Look, if you’re too busy, I totally understand.

Chance: No, I appreciate the offer.

Summer: I just thought that maybe, I don’t know, you could use a friend. We could grab some comfort food, have a laugh. But look, if you need to do your work, it’s– it’s fine. We can do it another time. Let’s rain check, okay?

Chance: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on. Hope you don’t think I’m gonna let you off the hook that easy. Comfort food sounds great. I’m starving.

Nikki: Oh, Lauren, thank you for meeting me. Thank you for making the time. I was hoping that we could–

Lauren: Nikki, stop right there. Before you say another word, I need to know something first.

Nikki: Of course, you’re upset about last night, and I feel terrible about it.

Lauren: No, the only thing that I need to know is if you’ve been drinking again.

Daniel: Hey, sorry about the music Lucy was blasting earlier. Apparently, it’s something called pop rock, and it can only be enjoyed at very high decibels.

Danny: Well, thank you for the explanation, but I already asked her to send me her playlist. Yeah, I was actually a little shocked that I wasn’t on it.

Daniel: Oh, you know, she’s a fan. I’m sure she’s a fan.

Danny: Oh, yes, yes, of course, no doubt. I mean, hey, look, um, you know, I’m only family, right? for humoring her and asking for her list.

Danny: I wasn’t humoring her, believe it or not. Yeah. I– I really got into some of it. And I’m not above picking up some new ideas now and then. Hey, you never know where motivation is going to come from. You got to stay on the cutting edge. Excuse me. Sorry.

Daniel: Wow, someone sure is blowing up your phone. I wonder who that could be. I’m kidding. I know exactly who that is. I mean, Christine’s the only one that can make you smile like that.

Phyllis: Danny, come on, get back to me. Get back to me, Danny. I bet she’s with you right now. Oh, I bet that’s happening. She’s sitting with you right now, taking shots at me, making herself feel better. That’s what’s happening. Oh, no. Oh, no, Christine. That is not going to work. I refuse to let the bug come between me and Danny ever, ever again.

Lucy: Dad.

Daniel: Mm-hmm.

Lucy: I’m hungry.

Danny: Hey, why don’t you let your grandfather whip you up something, huh?

Daniel: Yeah, or– or I could just call for some takeout, go pick up some burgers. How does that sound?

Lucy: No, no, none of the above. I’m having– having a really specific craving. Grilled cheese.

Danny: You got it. Grilled cheese sandwich coming right up.

Lucy: Oh, no, y– you don’t have to do that.

Danny: No. It’s no problem at all.

Lucy: I kind of mean “No, thank you.” Sometimes, I just– I want–

Danny: Okay.

Lucy: I want stuff the way that mom makes it.

Daniel: Are you texting your mom?

Lucy: She’s the only one who makes it right.

Daniel: Yeah, sure, right, but Luce, I mean, come on, you don’t have to go all the way over to your mother’s for a sandwich.

Lucy: Oh, I– I’m not. She is already on her way over here. Oh, I should probably go check and make sure that we have everything she needs.

Daniel: What just happened?

Danny: Yeah, that, uh, escalated fast.

Daniel: Yeah, that did. One text and Heather’s on her way over here? I guess it makes Lucy happy.

Danny: And what about you?

Daniel: What about me?

Danny: Does it make you happy knowing that Heather’s on her way over?

Daniel: I’m not going to tell Lucy that she can’t call her mom.

Danny: That’s not what I asked. It seems like Heather is spending as much time here as she does at her own place. I’m just– I’m just wondering, how does it make you feel?

Phyllis: You’ve given me no choice, Danny. But I don’t mind one bit.

Nikki: But I give you my word, I have not had a drop of alcohol since last night. I had a really bad moment at the office yesterday, and I– I gave into temptation. I– I– I couldn’t help myself. But that’s over. I– I’ve pulled myself together, and I am completely sober.

Lauren: Well, I’m glad to hear that. But what about ten minutes from now?

Nikki: Look, no flask, no hidden pint of vodka. After Victor picked me up this morning, I went straight to an AA meeting, which was very humbling, but imperative. And that helped me get back on track. But please believe me, I am telling you the truth.

Lauren: I do believe you. And I hope you can understand why I’m so concerned.

Nikki: I cannot blame you for doubting me. My behavior last night was deplorable.

Lauren: I was frightened for you, Nikki.

Nikki: I’m so sorry. I am determined to beat this thing. I’ve done it before and I will do it again.

Lauren: Words alone cannot make that happen. And neither can just one meeting. I mean, we both know that.

Nikki: I am going to do my damnedest to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

Lauren: It was heartbreaking seeing you in that condition. The fact that nobody saw you was sheer luck.

Nikki: I hope to God they didn’t.

Lauren: Look, I don’t know much about your struggle, but I do know about your addiction. And that you have been going through some impossible times.

Nikki: It has been absolute chaos and agony. Otherwise, none of this would be happening.

Lauren: Well, let me tell you what I know about you. You have incredible strength and pride. And your sobriety means everything to you. And I saw none of that last night.

Nikki: That’s why I didn’t want Victor to see me that way. And I’m sorry I put you on the spot like that, having you make an excuse when he called. But it was a good one.

Lauren: He knew something was wrong right away.

Nikki: At least it spared him from worrying that something terrible had happened to me.

Lauren: Something terrible did happen to you, Nikki. And he had every right to know where you were. I have never been so worried as I was when Fen was going through his active addiction. Fear sat on my stomach like a stone. My nerves were always on edge when I– I didn’t know where he was or I couldn’t find him. It was a living nightmare to feel utterly helpless, and no one should ever feel like that.

Nikki: The last thing I wanted was to upset Victor like that.

Lauren: I’m sorry for coming down on you so hard. I know a little bit about what you’re going through. And after everything that I’ve been through with Fenn… I have nothing but compassion for you. So, if you need anything, you need support, you need a ride, you need to talk anything, anywhere, you call me. If you can’t find your sponsor or he’s unavailable, and you can’t talk to Victor, promise me you will call me.

Nikki: I will.

Lauren: Don’t you suffer alone. And don’t you let your family suffer any more than they already have.

Summer: All right. Let’s order up all of your favorites.

Chance: Ooh, that could be a bad idea. It’s everything on this menu.

Summer: That’s okay. We can do that. How about a drink to start, though? Just one or two. Not trying to get you drunk. I just want to distract you from everything that’s weighing on your mind.

Chance: Well, I guess I could use a little distraction. But I hope you know I don’t need some whole game plan devoted to cheer me up, okay? Because I’m fine. Really.

Summer: I know. It’s also normal to kind of be in denial. Good food and some good wine, it’s a great way to pass the time until you are ready to process everything.

Chance: Okay. Fine. I will admit, I was a bit caught off guard. I thought things with Sharon were going well. But after thinking about it, a part of me feels like she is right, you know? So, this is for the best.

Summer: Still, when something like this happens so abruptly, it’s going to hurt.

Chance: Yeah, I think in most cases, sure. But this wasn’t anything bitter or angry. No– no nasty accusations thrown around, no insults, nobody cheated. Sharon and I, we– we get along. We’re genuinely friends. And I think once this initial breakup awkwardness passes, we’ll continue to be friends. Or at least I hope so.

Summer: That’s a really mature attitude to have. I think Kyle and I are trying to do something similar to that. Having Harrison to co-parent helps. We kind of have to remain positive and civil with each other, but I gotta admit, it’s still not easy.

Chance: Well, yeah, of course it’s tougher for you. I mean, you and Kyle, your relationship was much deeper and longer. You guys go way back, right? There’s– there’s a lot more pain to get past there. But I’ll tell you from experience, it just takes time, right? Just takes time to really figure out what that future looks like after all that.

Summer: Okay, what’s going on here? We’re not here to cheer me up. We’re here to cheer you up.

Chance: Oh, yeah. My bad. My bad.

Summer: Let’s get these drinks going.

Chance: Okay.

Daniel: What was that?

Danny: What was what?

Daniel: Oh, you know what. You know, that. That tone about how I don’t mind having Heather coming over here?

Danny: You don’t, though, do you?

Daniel: No, I don’t. Because she’s Lucy’s mom, and we’re co-parents.

Danny: Yeah. Absolutely.

Daniel: Look, if you’re implying that something is going on between the two of us, you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s not. It’s nothing. I do– I do get the feeling that Lucy might have a little agenda of her own.

Danny: Or maybe Lucy just misses Heather when they’re not together. I mean, you said so yourself. It’s just been the two of them for a while. And, hey, it’s got to be thrilling for her to have both her parents in the same town.

Daniel: Yeah, and I am thrilled having my daughter so close to me.

Danny: And I’m sure Lucy feels torn, you know? This, uh, shared custody thing, splitting up her time between her parents, it’s going to require adjustment, right?

Daniel: She’s been through a lot because of me. You know? Now, she has to deal with me and Heather living in the same town together, but not really being together.

Danny: But it’s gotta be reassuring for her to have this family time with the two of you like it was before. It’d– Just it’s the opposite for me, you know, having you and Mom in town. Yeah, it’s– it’s not reassuring at all. Actually, it’s kind of terrifying.

Danny: I– I don’t love the idea of having us both around you being terrifying for you.

Daniel: Yeah, but, you know, I know your history. I was there, remember? So, any of those times that you guys were at each other’s throats, it left an indelible mark on my very fragile young mind. So, yeah, I’m sorry, but you and Ma, same place, same time, not reassuring.

Heather: Hi.

Danny: Heather, the chef that makes house calls. Look, uh, I’ve got a run. There’s something I have to do.

Daniel: Where are you going?

Danny: I– I won’t be long. Just say, send me one of those grilled cheese sandwiches. I’ll be right back, okay?

Daniel: Listen, I am really sorry that Lucy dragged you out like this tonight.

Heather: Oh, I’m– I’m just happy that our daughter still wants to hang out with her boring old mom.

Daniel: You’re not old and boring. You shouldn’t let her take advantage of you like that.

Heather: Oh, no, Lucy is definitely not taking advantage. Um, I actually live for moments like this. These days are not going to last forever, you know? And, uh, to be called and wanted? It is, um, my pleasure to make her anything she wants for as long as she wishes.

Daniel: What’s with the face?

Lucy: Um…

Heather: Seriously? You– you called me to make grilled cheese, but you don’t actually have–

Lucy: Have any cheese.

Daniel: Key ingredient. We don’t have cheese. Is– is there anything we can substitute for cheese?

Lucy: Um, we could do peanut butter and bananas. We do have that.

Daniel: Peanut butter and bananas. Grilled? That sounds terrible. No, absolutely not.

Heather: Who– who– who said anything about them being grilled?

Lucy: Yeah, Dad. That’s gross.

Heather: Yeah, Dad. Gross. Hi.

Lucy: Hi. Isn’t Mom the best?

Daniel: Best. Yeah.

Nikki: Thank you, Lauren, but I plan on maintaining my sobriety. I appreciate your offer more than you can know, but hopefully, I would never have to take you up on it.

Lauren: Well, I hope so, too. For you and your family. But I want you to know, I have faith that you are going to get through this. And whatever the outcome, the offer stands. You can always count on me.

Nikki: Well, with all that support, how can I fail?

Lauren: Well, your sponsor, Seth, seems committed as well. He seemed very concerned, so I’m sure that he will be available to you whenever you need it.

Nikki: He certainly was there for me last night when you called him for backup.

Lauren: Without hesitation. He knew you needed all the support you could get.

Nikki: I was lucky to find him. We had run into each other at meetings over the years and chatted, traded success stories, patted each other on the back, that kind of thing. It just, uh, grew from there. And, uh, I knew that I needed a sponsor, and we got along. And he certainly made it easy to reach out once I realized I was in trouble.

Lauren: Like Neil and Katherine in the past, you had a mutual understanding.

Nikki: Yeah. You know… it’s almost impossible to understand addiction unless you have experienced it personally. And I know you’ve gone through so much with Fen. But it’s not quite the same.

Lauren: I know how important a sponsor is to someone in recovery. Fen is very close to his. In fact, he and Trey spent Christmas with him.

Nikki: Wow. Well, I don’t know that it will be like that for Seth and me, but, um, he sure was there for me, and that’s all that matters, really. I will always be grateful for that.

Phyllis: Thank you for meeting with me. I took the liberty.

Danny: Oh, thank you. So, uh– Yeah. So, what’s the big urgency? What did you want to see me about?

Phyllis: First, I’d like to ask you for a favor.

Danny: Uh, well, that depends on what it is.

Phyllis: That song that you said, um, I helped inspire, can you play it for me?

Danny: That’s what you wanted to see me about?

Phyllis: I love that song. It’s so beautiful.

Danny: Right now? Like, tonight? I haven’t even finished the lyrics. Look, if you want to talk about something, I’m here.

Phyllis: I do, I do. But first, I just– I want to hear this song. It’s just beautiful, and makes me feel like– like everything is going to work out the way it should. That’s what your music does to me, do you know that? It inspires me. Please?

Danny: Sure. Okay.

Summer: So tell me, this breakup between you and Sharon, why do I get the feeling that it didn’t just happen today? When I saw you last, had you guys already decided to end things?

Chance: Yeah, we had. And I’ll admit, I was still a little raw from it, still kind of fresh. So, I wasn’t quite ready to bare my soul.

Summer: Mm, are you ready to bare your soul now, maybe?

Chance: Ugh, I would rather talk about anything else, actually.

Summer: Okay, like what?

Chance: How about the giant thank you that I owe you?

Summer: For dinner? No. We’re even, I’m having fun, too.

Chance: No, no, no. I’m talking about the wardrobe tips that you gave me. I swear you knocked it out of the park. You got me on the right track.

Summer: Oh, okay. So, you might say that shopping spree I went on saved your career?

Chance: No doubt in my mind.

Summer: Okay, so I think that this means that now you have to trust my judgment in all things going forward.

Chance: Clearly, I have no choice.

Danny: Oh, thank you, thank you.

Phyllis: That was amazing.

Danny: So… you want to tell me what’s really bothering you? ‘Cause I know it’s not the song. Does it maybe have something to do with Tucker McCall?

Phyllis: Tucker McCall? Why would you ask that?

Danny: Well, I’ve heard he has a reputation for being nothing but trouble. So, when I saw you two New Year’s Eve, I just, you know– Please tell me you two aren’t seeing each other.

Phyllis: I mean, do you think it would be a mistake for me to be involved with him?

Danny: I don’t presume to make any kind of judgment call for you, especially since, really, all I know about the man is his notorious reputation.

Phyllis: Well, um, I mean, I don’t see a future with Tucker, you know.

Danny: Hm.

Phyllis: He doesn’t sweep me off my feet. Like you do. I mean, really– Oh, it’s hot. There’s no passion there. With Tucker and myself. When, um… When you have passion with somebody, you definitely can’t let it go like we had. Do you remember the passion that we had?

Danny: Yes, and yes to that, but, uh… it wasn’t necessarily all good.

Phyllis: Yeah, it was. It was all good. I think, um… I think we could have that again. There’s so much fire and heat between us. I think that if we try, we could have that again. Don’t get that. Don’t get that.

Danny: What? Are you kidding me? What the hell is this?

Phyllis: I– I’m sorry, what?

Danny: The video you obviously just posted.

Phyllis: Oh, yeah, I– I posted that. Uh, the song is so beautiful, I wanted the world to hear it. Is there something wrong with that?

Danny: What about the caption, Phyllis? “TFW meaning that feeling when your ex plays you a love song?” Why would you post something like this?

Phyllis: I don’t know what the problem is. I mean, the song is so beautiful, and I helped inspire it, and I wanted the world to hear it. But I think you’re making a big deal out of nothing. What’s wrong with that?

Danny: Maybe because it is a big deal. Yeah, Daniel’s right. He was worried about us being in the same town together. You know what? You are infuriating.

Phyllis: Um, am I supposed to understand what’s going on here?

Danny: Don’t try to play me, Phyllis. We know exactly why you posted this video. It’s obvious. You want the whole world to think that there’s something going on between us, that we’re now romantically seeing each other again when you know damn well that’s not the case at all. But you know what? I know better now. You haven’t changed at all, have you, Phyllis?

Phyllis: I have changed.

Danny: But you haven’t. You’re still up to your same old tricks, playing games, manipulating people’s lives to suit your own warped agenda. You just don’t stop, do you?

Phyllis: Do you know who’s playing games? It’s not me. You want to know who? It’s your precious Christine. That’s who’s playing games. I am direct and I am upfront. Christine couldn’t wait to tell me that the two of you were going on some romantic trip together.

Danny: She just told you that, unprovoked?

Phyllis: Yeah, unprovoked. She took great, great pleasure in telling me, trust me.

Danny: Which means you two are at it again.

Phyllis: Do you know how much it hurts me when she comes after me like that?

Danny: I see, and you’re the innocent bystander just minding your own business?

Phyllis: Yes, actually, I was, I was. I was trying to apologize to her, Danny. We were having a simple conversation and she tried to throw that in my face. Do you know, contrary to public belief, I actually have feelings. But she couldn’t wait to make me feel like dirt.

Danny: Again, just out of the blue?

Phyllis: Yeah, out of the blue. I can’t help it if she’s threatened by me.

Danny: Please tell me that you didn’t happen to mention that you kissed me.

Phyllis: Oh, well, as I remember… you were kissing me, too. It wasn’t just me kissing you. But, no, I didn’t tell her. I could have thrown it in her face like she did with me, but I didn’t. I showed restraint.

Danny: Restraint? You call posting that video restraint? You seriously think that you should get credit for that?

Phyllis: Yeah, I do. But I think there’s a bigger part of this story. The fact that you didn’t tell Christine about the kiss. Why is that, Danny?

Danny: Why would I do something like that? What could it possibly accomplish? Nothing. Except, upset Christine, and fuel this rivalry between you two even further.

Phyllis: Hm. Well, I think there’s another reason why you didn’t tell her.

Danny: What are you suggesting?

Phyllis: I think you liked it. Yeah. I think the kiss meant something to you. How about that?

Seth: Ladies. It’s so good to see you both.

Nikki: Well, hello. Your ears must have been burning.

Lauren: Good to see you again. We didn’t really get a chance to talk last night when you came to help.

Nikki: And I wasn’t able to finish thanking you. I was still a little out of it when Victor came to the suite, but I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you. You were there when I needed it.

Seth: Well, I’m ready to do whatever you need. And may I say, it’s great to see you looking so much better now. And, uh, you know, I hope as your sponsor, I can– I can help you stay that way.

Nikki: Well, I’m counting on it, it’s– it’s always a struggle.

Seth: Yeah, that’s– that’s what I’m here for, right? You know, to help you get back to stable sobriety.

Nikki: I didn’t see you at the meeting this morning. I was there.

Seth: That– Yeah, that’s great. You know, meetings– meetings are so important. Uh, I’m afraid that’s my fault.

Seth: No, I don’t know. Maybe I’m under the weather or something, you know. Actually, I was just on my way to a late meeting, so…

Nikki: Um, you know, you might be coming down with something. Maybe you should go home after the meeting and rest.

Seth: Yes, yes, that’s just what I was thinking, yeah. Yeah, but don’t forget, I always leave my phone on. So, if you need anything, anything, just don’t hesitate to reach out, ’cause I’m here, yeah?

Nikki: Okay. Thanks. Um, we’ll talk tomorrow. And, uh, go, go, take care of yourself.

Seth: Yeah, thanks. Uh, you do the same. Good night.

Nikki: Good night. Hm. Did he seem okay to you?

Chance: You think the jacket’s slick? Wait ’til you see what else I got from Marchetti. You’d be very proud.

Summer: Oh, yeah, the clothes are nice, but it’s the man inside of them that makes all the difference.

Chance: Ooh, well, this man better get going. I got an early morning and I can’t show up all ragged from hanging out too late.

Summer: No, we don’t want that. Being fired in your first week, that would be– that would be bad. I don’t want to be responsible for that. Uh, this was, um– This was nice.

Chance: Yeah. Let’s do it again soon.

Lucy: Mm, this was exactly what I needed, hot chocolate and marshmallows always helps me fall right asleep. Good night, Dad.

Daniel: Good night.

Lucy: I promise I won’t drag you out here to make me a grilled cheese again.

Heather: Well, I mean, maybe not until you, uh, get some cheese in the house.

Daniel: Yeah, cheese. Key ingredient.

Lucy: Okay, okay, fine. My bad. Good night, Mom.

Heather: Good night, sweetheart, I love you.

Lucy: Love you.

Heather: Don’t forget to brush your teeth, I know you pretend to do that. I saw that. She– she was– Yeah, I know. All right, well, I should get going soon, too, just as soon as I wash the dishes.

Daniel: Oh, no, no, you don’t have to do that. You cooked, you don’t have to do the cleaning, that’s the deal. You know that. Besides, I probably owe you one, maybe two.

Heather: Why is that?

Daniel: Well, twice now, you have dropped everything at our daughter’s request.

Heather: Guess I’m a soft touch.

Daniel: Yeah, me, too. Kind of putty in her hands. I get the feeling she kind of likes all of us hanging out again. You know, like the old times.

Heather: Yeah, I mean, I don’t think she’s the only one.

Daniel: No?

Heather: I imagine you’ve already noticed this, but… if you need me to say it out loud… I’m falling back in love with you, Daniel. All over again.

Danny: You are purposely misreading this whole thing. You’re twisting things into believing what you want to believe, and the truth be damned.

Phyllis: Look, I know why you don’t want to face this. You probably don’t even want to admit it to yourself, but it’s written all over your face, Danny. And it shows in your demeanor and your body language.

Danny: What are you saying? Do you even know?

Phyllis: Here’s what I know. That you’re happier and more comfortable around me. You’re so tense and on edge with Christine. It’s like– it’s like you feel like you’re going to say something to scare the little bug off.

Danny: You know what? You have no clue what you’re talking about. Can I get a scotch neat, please? Thank you. so hard to be comfortable around her, aren’t you? So hard. You’re making it look like the two of you are so comfortable together and so in sync. You know, like you’re still attracted to her. The allure of the bewitching Christine, it’s all an act.

Danny: Hey, you know what? Do me a favor and back off, all right? Yeah, stop pretending to try to know my feelings better than I do because you don’t.

Phyllis: I always trust my instincts, you know that? My instincts never lead me astray. You should trust them, too. I know what I know. And I know… this.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[ Monitor beeping ]

I know it’s unusual. I usually like short negotiations because the longer the negotiations are, the more at risk something could — One moment. Excuse me. Can I — You have, uh — Do you know where Cyrus Renault’s room is?

[ Knock on door ]

What are you trying to do to me?

Willow. Has my friend been brought in? Adam Wright. Uh, yes. Dr. Finn is with him now. Where? Uh, he’s in Trauma Room One, but you can’t go in there. I know. I just have to be nearby. Airway’s clear. How’s his BP? over . Pulse is and thready. Adam?! Adam! Adam. I need to know what he swallowed. Come on. The paramedics brought this in, and they said he’d been drinking vodka. Okay, that combo could do it. This kid meant business. Adam, come on. Adam, wake up! [ Monitor beeping ] Adam!

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Hello? Carly. Can you please come to General Hospital? Joss is here. Is she okay? Yes, but I think she needs you. I’ll be right there. Esme, you must be relieved. Yeah. Um…have you seen Spencer? He was supposed to bring Ace here. Yeah, no, I haven’t — I haven’t seen them. But it looks like you didn’t need that adorable baby boy to sway the judge’s opinion. You must be thrilled. You must be disappointed with my sentence. I can understand. Please don’t presume you know anything about me. Come on, Trina. I mean, the revenge porn of Cameron and Josslyn, framing you for the crime. If the allegations were true and I were in your position, I wouldn’t be done with me until I was locked up forever. I’m not leaving Port Charles. My life is here. Trina is here. My grandmother is here on. Aunt Alexis is here. And I’m not — I’m not throwing that away. I’m not going to abandon everyone and everything just so that I can go on the run with you. What are you talking about? I’m asking a lot. I know that, Spencer. No, you’re not just asking a lot. You’re asking for everything. Hey, that’s our only option. At least for now. No, this is your only option. But it’s not mine. Ace isn’t going with you, and neither am I. It’s the only way for us to be together as a family. Spencer, you have to trust me on this. That’s just the thing, is that I don’t trust you. And I am not running away with you because I am not like you. Don’t you realize your brother is in danger if he stays here?

His blood pressure is dropping. Do we have any history on this kid? Any past narcotic abuse? He’s on dextroamphetamine. For ADHD? Uh, correct. Anything else? He was treated not that long ago here for panic attacks. Josslyn Jacks brought him in, and I checked him in. Okay. Find out if he’s taking anything else, please.

[ Monitor beeping ]

How is Adam? We’re doing everything we can to help him, but we need some more information. Yeah, I was there when he passed out. I called . Are you the one who found the pills? Yeah, I found him at the park. He was drinking, and the pills had fallen out of his pocket. Do you know if he took any of them? No. But he couldn’t have taken them that long before I found him. Maybe an hour ago. Alright, it’s really important that we know as much about his medical history as possible. So, has Adam used drugs in the past? He has ADHD, so he’s taking something for that. Dextroamphetamine. Yeah. That’s it. Anything else? No, not that he’s made me aware of. What about the drinking? Adam got really drunk on New Year’s Eve, but that was the first time I’d ever seen him drunk. Okay. It’s been very helpful. Thank you for all that info. Yeah. Of course. Joss? How are you holding up? Adam has been struggling for months. How did I not see it coming? [ Door opens ] I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt. Can I have a word with Mr. Renault? Mr. Renault? Is that okay with you? Oh, yeah. Yes, that’s — that’s fine with me. Mr. Corinthos’ timing is positively providential. Yeah. Why — Why is that? I have some news that will uplift your spirits.

My parents raised me to understand right from wrong. Yeah, my parents didn’t raise me… not that I could even remember if they did. My point is… I believe in the justice system, and for it to work, it has to be fair. So do I want you to pay for the horrible things that you did to Joss and Cam and me? Of course I do. Because you broke the law multiple times and you deserve to be punished for your crimes. That’s only fair. But you don’t deserve to spend time in prison for some petty breaking and entering where no one got hurt. Esme… …as much as I dislike you… …I found myself agreeing with the judge. I’m surprised you could be so rational about this. I want to live my life looking ahead. I’m leaving Port Charles soon. And I don’t want my very justified anger towards you to hold me back. Wait, so you’re — you’re leaving town? Don’t get too excited. It’s only for one semester. But yes, I was accepted to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. [ Chuckles ] Congratulations. That — That seems like an amazing opportunity. It is. Although I know Spencer is gonna miss you like crazy while you’re abroad. Yeah. Yeah, he might… if he wasn’t coming with me. There’s still a lot of unknowns. Unfortunately, yes. Let’s get prepped for a gastric lavage. Shouldn’t we ask for approval from one of the co-chiefs of staff? There’s no time. No time for waiting. Let’s go. Dr. Finn knows what he’s doing. Yes, Doctor.

[ Monitor beeping ]

What happened to Adam… it is not your fault. All the signs were there. I knew Adam was in trouble. But you’re not a mind reader. You could not have predicted that Adam was going to try to take his own life. Did he ever talk about suicide with you? No. He never used that word. But God, more than once he talked about how the pressure was never ending. And I was so worried about him, I told the RA what was going on with him. Well, it sounds like you did the right thing, Josslyn. You tried to get Adam help. [ Elevator bell dings ] But it didn’t work. I think that’s what pushed Adam over the edge. Carly: Josslyn? Mom! Hey. Oh. Adam tried to kill himself. I found him in the park. Oh. Thank you. Oh, Joss. And what makes you think that my little brother is in danger? Because look, I liked it better when Esme and Ace were both living here with my grandmother and Kevin, but still… As long as Ace is under Esme’s care, your brother is in danger. Look, I know that you haven’t been around, so you might not know this, but Esme is actually a very, very good mother to Ace. No, she’s playing a part, showing people what they want to see. But at her core, Esme is still the same viper that caused so much destruction for both of our lives. I actually do believe that this version of Esme loves her son. Whatever love Esme has for Ace is outweighed by her curiosity for her former life. Don’t you get it? Esme wants to remember. That’s why she’s searching her past. That’s why she went to Wyndemere and broke in. How do you know about that? I told you. I’ve been watching things. Whatever stories Esme makes up about her reasons for going there, you and I both know better. Okay. Yes, I have at times wondered about Esme, and who’s to say whether or not she’s gotten her memories back? But how can we know that for sure? We don’t have any proof. We don’t have any evidence of that. No. We both know what her true nature is. Esme is still the same person who tormented both of us, who relished seeing our family in pain. And what will cause more pain than… running away with Ace? Or… God forbid… doing something far worse?

We’re going to be fine here, right, Cyrus? Oh, I-I think we will. Yeah. [ Monitor beeping ] Mr. Corinthos. Believe it or not, I’m happy to see you again. You know what? The nurse is gone. You can stop with the “Mr. Corinthos” nonsense. Just if you got something to say, say it quick. [ Elevator bell dings ] Hey, Dex. Why are you dressed like that? Were you just in Cyrus Renault’s room? Nina, you shouldn’t be here. Is Sonny with Cyrus right now?! I’m sorry. You can’t go in there. So he is in there.

What you need to know is I’m a sinner. That’s not news. I know I’ll never be able to fully repent for my past. I beg forgiveness from God every day. But I don’t know that the gates of heaven will open for me after the things I’ve done. That’s an awfully big wind up, Cyrus. Can we just, you know — Can we just get to the point? This is why I now need to live a fully penitent life, continue to try to atone for my sins, and accept my punishment with grace. Tick-tock. You don’t need to send anyone else to do your dirty work. Okay? Why is that, Cyrus? I won’t be pressing charges against you. The case will be closed. Trina, wait. What do you mean you’re — you’re going to Paris? I can’t believe Spencer would abandon his brother like that. You moved out of Laura and Kevin’s place. You made the decision that Spencer would see a whole lot less of Ace. Besides, this is a really great opportunity. Yeah, for — for you. What about — Spencer’s not even in college. I didn’t want to leave Spencer. Isn’t this, like, really selfish of you? If you would have let me finish, I was gonna say that Spencer didn’t want to leave me either. Besides, it’s not like he has a job or anything that ties him down here. Well, what about his grandmother? Laura? She spent a summer in Europe trying to find Spencer’s dad. I think Laura can handle Spencer being gone for one semester. Fine. Laura will probably be okay with this. But what about Ace? What about me? What about you, Esme? I know what the old Esme is capable of, but there has to be a better way than taking off with her child. If there was a way that I could stay in Port Charles and fight for custody, I would do that. But if I stay, I’ll go to prison. The way I did. Your sentence was fairly brief. In my case, I don’t know when I’d be free again. And that does Ace no good. But you do have to face the consequences of your actions at some point, right? I mean, you have a family and one of your kids is just a baby, so at some point it does need to stop being all about you. I’m doing this for Ace. For all my flaws and failings, this isn’t a choice between me and a better man. It’s a choice between me and Esme. And what if Esme wasn’t a factor? How — How would that even be possible? Well, my grandmother convinced Esme to turn herself in to the PCPD for breaking into Wyndemere. And as the current owner of the property, Ava has decided to press charges. In fact, her hearing is being held right now. If Ava gets her way, Esme is going to be spending some time in prison, and that’s going to give you a window of opportunity in which you can squash whatever legal troubles you have, as well as file for custody of Ace. Even if Esme does go to prison, she still has rights. She won’t just roll over. But you’re the father, so you have just as much a claim as she does, right? [ Cellphone ringing ] It’s my grandmother. Maybe she has an update. Hey, are you at the courthouse with Esme? Yes. Okay. Thank you for telling me. Well? She pled guilty. Um…she’s not gonna have to serve any time. She gets six months probation. So Esme is basically a free woman. I found Adam in the park. He was just sitting there trying to play his guitar, drinking from a bottle of vodka. Thank God you went to look for him. You saved his life. I just can’t believe he took it this far. [ Sighs ] [ Sighs ] Hey. Hey, Dr. Finn, how is he? I understand you’re the one who found Adam and called the ambulance, and we thank you for that. But, um, we really only speak to family, so all I can say is we pumped his stomach. But he’s in stable condition. Oh, thank God. Thanks to your quick thinking, Josslyn. Adam should make a full recovery. Thank you. This is such a relief. See? You did the right thing. We do need to speak to Adam’s parents, though. I can get Adam’s parents contact information. No, please do not call his parents. Honey, they have to. No, you don’t understand. His parents are the reason he tried to kill himself.

In the state of New York, the victim doesn’t need to press charges for assault. The state can pursue the case without you. While that may be true, I wonder how much effort the DA will want to invest in a case where the key witness testifies that I was the one who provoked the assault. You had gone to a church trying to commune with God, as you searched for answers, I came upon you. Instead of responding with kindness, I responded with hostility and bitterness, maybe even malice. In other words, I sinned against you. So if the DA takes the case to trial and I’m called to testify, I’ll repent and beg for forgiveness. It’s the exact opposite of what you told the cops. W-W-Why? What was the change of heart? I don’t understand. Well, I think you do. Because if you’re gonna reverse your position just like that, there’s got to be something in it for you. So w-what do you want in return? That’s what I’m asking. Nothing. I’m aware that a man in your position might just want to finish the job he started. And since getting out of Pentonville, I really have come to appreciate my freedom. And my life might be really small now, but I cherish it and I would like to keep living it. Is that so hard to understand? For an average person, maybe. But for you, I don’t believe a word you’re shoveling at me. [ Chuckles ] Well, would you believe another person helped me see the error of my ways? Who got to you, Cyrus? Uh, the person asked me not to say. Who?! Let me keep my word, Sonny. It’s…the only thing I have left. Dex, please. Ever since Sonny found out what I did, he hasn’t been thinking clearly. I’m worried about him. If anything happens to him — If Sonny wants you to know something, he’ll tell you himself.

I am genuinely sorry that it’s come to this. Yes. Me too. I’m not giving up on Sonny. I’m not going to stop loving him. I will do anything for the man that I love.

Adam does not have a good relationship with his parents. He would not want them to be involved. And he’s not a minor. He’s over . That has to count for something, right? Adam’s currently unconscious and his parents are next of kin. They need to be notified. I’m… I’m really sorry, but that’s hospital procedure. Josslyn, I know you, and I know your heart is in the right place, but if that was Cameron in there, don’t you think I should be notified? It’s not the same thing. Adam’s parents are the problem. He’s terrified of them. He got an A minus on a test, and they considered that a failure. Okay, I understand, but legally, his parents need to be notified. Thank you. Um, you do what you need to do. Yeah. Come here. Can’t they at least wait till Adam wakes up and ask him if he wants his parents to know? You’ve heard a lot about Adam’s parents this semester, haven’t you? It’s crazy, the amount of pressure they put on him. The way he talks, they don’t even see him. It’s just about him getting the best grades and to get into the right med school. Yeah. He seems to be leaning on you a lot, too, right? Yes. I thought I was helping. Clearly not. Hey, you didn’t do anything wrong. Adam is lucky to have a friend like you. When his parents find out what he did… Adam is never going to forgive me. Oh, baby. I am Ace’s mother, and I thought that Spencer wanted to be a part of his little brother’s life. Spencer will always be part of Ace’s life, but he’s just giving you the space that you said you wanted. I said I wanted space. That didn’t mean I wanted his brother living on another continent. It’s not like we’re never coming back to Port Charles. We’re going to be in Paris for one semester. Yeah, but what if you two love living there? And then that one semester extends into the summer, and then you decide to live there for another year. And Spencer can party his way through Europe, leaving his brother totally behind. Spencer is not gonna do that. He’s way too loyal to Ace. You’re in love with Spencer! Of course you’re gonna say that! I can’t believe I have to defend Spencer to you, of all people. But what has he done except help you and Ace? Look. Ace loves his brother. He lights up every single time Spencer walks into the room. And Ace is too little to understand the difference between a parent and a brother. How was Ace gonna understand that Spencer hasn’t just completely abandoned him? I don’t understand how this could have happened. Esme gets six months of probation and zero time in jail? Esme wasn’t on trial for making the revenge porn of Josslyn and Cam, or for framing Trina. This case was just about breaking and entering into Wyndemere. And like I said, Esme wouldn’t have broken into Wyndemere unless she thought it would help her get her memories back. She said that she did it for Ace, and I appreciate that. But Ava doesn’t see it that way. I mean, why — why can’t she just let it go? Because you broke into her home, Esme, and actions have consequences. Yes, says the person who skirted consequences his entire life. Wait. You remember, don’t you? What? No, I — I’m just going off of everything that I’ve learned from your past, from Laura and Kevin. Nikolas: If Esme was truly committed to starting a new life as Ace’s devoted mother… then wouldn’t she want to avoid Wyndemere at all costs? Esme: Thanks again for coming. I really need you on my side, Spence. Spencer, what are you thinking? Well, I don’t know anything for sure. It’s really more so just a feeling. A feeling about what? Esme might not be telling the whole truth about why she broke into Wyndemere. She said something. It’s r– It’s a really, really small thing, so it might not mean anything. What did — What did she say? She called me Spence. And that was the name that she called me the whole time that we were together. And she hasn’t called me that since she lost her memory. But then earlier today at the PCPD, she called me Spence. And — And it wasn’t just what she said, it was how she said it. It was the same tone. It was the same inflection. It was the same… everything. I don’t know. It could just be a coincidence. Oh, you know better. It’s proof that Esme is lying. She must have gotten her memories back. But then how can we know that for sure? We can’t. As long as she denies it. But are you really willing to trust her? Do you want to risk your brother’s life for Esme? I’ve got a call in to PCU requesting Adam’s parents’ contact information. Okay, I’ve called for a psych consult. I’m sure Adam will be put on a -hour hold. Maybe we’ll be a wake-up call for his parents to start taking better care of their son. Maybe. The situation with Adam’s parents sounds terrible, and I can’t imagine putting that kind of pressure on my kid. But he tried to kill himself. This is really serious. And now his parents will be able to give him the support he needs. I mean, Adam is clearly crying out for help. I just wish I did something sooner. [ Sighs ]

You change your mind about Renault? Cyrus is still a poison in Port Charles. We’ve got — We’ve got to deal with him. We just got to figure out another way. What about the assault charge against you? Somebody convinced Cyrus not to testify. Without the victim’s testimony… Right. But listen, Scorpio’s not — He’s not gonna risk the embarrassment of losing a weak case. You know what I mean? I’m just trying to figure out… who convinced Cyrus to drop the charges. I might know. Who? Cyrus wasn’t alone when I got here. There was someone in his room with him. Who?

…to renew. And if they talk about… With Spencer out of the country, this could be your chance to prove that you can go it alone as Ace’s mom. And yes, Spencer has helped out a lot, but it’s time for him to take a step back. And you made the same point when you moved out of Laura’s place. So, what? Am — Am I supposed to thank you now? Like you’re doing me this big favor? You can think of it however you want. But I want you to know… that not for one second did we question your abilities as a mom. You see, we were only thinking about Ace. Spencer and I don’t think about you at all. I gotta go. Congratulations, Esme. You got what you wanted.

When will Esme be back for Ace? Well, the hearing’s over. She’s a free woman, so any minute now. Then we’re running out of time. Even if you won’t come with me, you have to let me take Ace away and get him out of Esme’s grasp. This is our only chance. When Ace was born, I was certain that you were going to come back. And when you didn’t, I was furious with you. And I swore then and there that I was going to make sure that Ace had a stable childhood, no matter what. I know. And I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left. And it wasn’t fair for me to leave you to pick up the pieces. I know it looks like I’m running away again, but I swear this time it’s different. I’m not running away to escape punishment. I’m running to protect my son. Let me be a father to Ace… and to you. Let me do the right thing for our family. [ Voice breaking ] Let me save my son. [ Sighs ] You know, as awful as that was… it was nice seeing you back in your element. And thank you… for backing me up with the nurse. I realize she was only following procedure. Yes, but you were making the right call. You tried to help Adam, and he pushed you away. And then when he really needed your help, you were there for him and you did the right thing. He’s gonna understand. I’m so proud of you. Hey. Sorry. I don’t want to interrupt, but, Josslyn, I thought you’d want to know that Adam is stabilized now. In case you want to see him. Yeah, I do. I just have to grab something from my car. Oh. Hold on. Or… we could… give Adam a night to absorb what happened, and we can come back tomorrow. No, I need to see him today. Besides, I have something that belongs to him. I’ll be right back.

Does Josslyn realize that she saved Adam’s life? No. No. She feels that she should have known what he was gonna try. Okay, I’ll tell you what I want. I need confirmation first thing tomorrow. Goodbye. What did you do? Excuse me? What did you promise, uh, Cyrus? Well…nothing that I couldn’t afford to part with. Your freedom is that important to me. What made you think it was a good idea to strike a deal with Cyrus? Cyrus is gonna drop all the charges against you. A fight that I caused. You wouldn’t have attacked Cyrus if you weren’t so upset with me. You know, I caused a lot of trouble. I made some mistakes, and everything is falling apart, Sonny. And if I could go back in time, I would. I would change how I handled things, but that’s not a possibility. What is a possibility is me making a deal with Cyrus. All I’m trying to do is clean up the mess that I made. Next time you get the urge to help me… …don’t. Sonny. I have to do something. This is my life. Stay away from my business. No, as a matter of fact… stay away from me.

Adam’s really lucky you cared more about saving his life than about getting someone to sign off on your diagnosis. In life or death — there’s just no time to second guess. To be able to make a difference, to help that kid… to know his life depended on making a split-second decision, it…reminded me of why I love being a doctor. Also reminded me of… what I stand to lose if I can’t be one.

You know, on one hand, I am very proud of Josslyn and how she handled the situation. But on the other hand? Well, I hate that she feels responsible for him. I… We just want to protect our kids, right? Until life gets in the way. [ Chuckles ] I’m ready to see Adam. Sure. I’ll take you in. Okay. Um, if — if you don’t mind, I’d prefer to go in alone. Okay. Well, um, we’ll be right here if you need us. Thank you. [ Sighs ]

[ Monitor beeping ]

Hi, Adam. It’s me — Joss. I brought your guitar from the park. I know how much you love it.

I’m gonna stay with you until you wake up. Because, Adam, you are not alone. You have to know that taking Ace away with me is the best option for your brother. All of the points that you’re making about Esme are valid and… if she does get her memories back, she has zero incentive to be honest about it. So you’ll let me take Ace with me? It [sighs] Uh, yeah. His bag — Spencer, you’re making the right decision. Listen to me. His bag is in his room. Thank you. You’re okay. Okay? Hey. Okay. Alright. Um… I really hope that I get to see you again so that I can keep reminding you how much I love you. And, um… [ Exhales shakily ] When I, uh… When I first learned about you, I wasn’t really sure how to feel. And — And then I saw you, and… and then all I had was just pure love for you, Ace. All I’ve ever wanted for you is just happiness and — and safety and love. And… I don’t — I don’t — I don’t — I don’t know what I’m doing. But I — But I think that I’m making the right decision. I just hope that you remember always, always that you have an older brother that loves you very, very much.

[ Exhales shakily ] Okay. If you ever hurt him or if you ever abandon him — No, never. Listen to me. If you ever hurt him, I will find you and I will make you pay. I know that. He likes grapes, but they need to be cut into quarters so that he doesn’t choke. And, um… as you can see, he’s a very good sleeper, but… [ Chuckles ] …he likes to be read bedtime stories before bed. OK.

No, it’s because I know there’s something not right with this place. And how could there be when it’s owned by a DiMera?

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Now is the time to be smart, Ava. Take care of yourself. Just tell me the truth so I can help you.

You want the truth? The truth is you are acting like a spoiled child.

[Harris sighs]

[Ava chuckles and scoffs] I broke up with you, and so you punish me? You know, frankly, I thought that you were better than this. But obviously, I was wrong. And you know what? Thank you. Thank you for shining a light on the kind of man you are.

You know I would never hurt you. So let me help you out of this mess. Come on, you deserve better than this place and this guy.

[tense music]

OK, you know what, buddy? Show’s over. So why don’t you and your goons get the hell out of here before I sue the hell out of the city for this?

The bus is leaving tonight, so you’ll need to pack up Tate’s essentials– toiletries, shoes, clothes.

What–what? The bus leaves tonight to where? Where is this rehab?

It’s in Southern Illinois, and there’ll be a police escort with him on the trip.

OK, well, then I’m gonna follow the bus to that facility and I’m gonna make sure he’s all settled in.

No, you can’t do that.

W-w-why not?

Well, first of all, it’s not protocol when it comes to the transportation of a prisoner. And secondly, there’s no outside contact permitted for the first month of Tate’s residency.

Hang on a second.

[somber music] Are you telling me I cannot speak to my son for a whole month?

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m telling you.

[softly] Oh, my God.

It’s OK. I’ll be OK. As long as nobody punches me or anything and as long as I’m out of there as soon as possible, I’ll be fine. Mom, I swear, I’ll be fine, OK? I just– I don’t want you to worry. That’s the last thing I want.

[inhales deeply] OK. Since you are so brave and strong, I guess– I guess I will be, too.

I love you. I love you.

I’ll be strong, too.

[Theresa sighs]

I’ll get her some water.

OK.

[Sloan sighs]

I mean, it’s really, like, not my fault, you know, because I was just trying to make your mom laugh.

I know.

[slurring words] But she doesn’t laugh. Because she doesn’t have a sense of humor. That must be a really hard way to go through life.

[baby fussing] both: Great.

Oh.

No, no, no, no, no. I will take care of Jude. You need to sit down.

You’re not gonna treat me like a child!

I’m not treating you like a child. I’m treating you like somebody who drank an entire bottle in minutes.

Sloan. Here, water. You need to hydrate.

Oh. Hydrate. It’s such a fancy-schmancy word for the word water. Why can’t you just say, “Here’s some water, drink it.” You see, that’s the reason why you’re in-tit-imating– intimidating, because you use words like hydrate.

[baby fussing]

Why don’t Doc and I take the little guy out for a walk here? I’ll bet you that we can get him back to sleep.

That’s a great idea. Thank you.

Yeah, I think that’ll work fine. Shall we?

Mm.

[baby fussing]

[soft tense piano music]

Well, he certainly has calmed down, hasn’t he?

Boy, he calmed down? He’s sound asleep.

[sighs] What a little sweetheart. You know, it’s strange. When he smiles, he reminds me of Eric.

Hmm. Well, Eric wasn’t smiling much tonight, was he?

[Marlena sighs] Feel bad for him, Doc.

So do I.

Why do you think she got so wasted?

Well, I don’t know her. I don’t know her at all. I imagine she was nervous and she just wanted to impress us.

[John chuckles]

Well, I got to say, she made a pretty bad first impression.

Yeah. And she’ll be mortified when she sobers up.

Oh, yeah. So what do you think? One-off or does she have a drinking problem?

I hope not. For Eric’s sake and for Jude’s sake.

[tender somber music]

OK, now you are gonna lie down.

No, I want to dance.

No.

Come on. Please dance with me.

No dancing for me. It’s time for you to sleep.

I don’t want to sleep. Mm!

Oh, God. Sloan?

Mm-hmm?

You’re drunk. You need to sober up.

[Sloan groans]

But I don’t want to.

Well, you have to.

But I don’t want to.

But why did you drink that entire bottle of wine?

Because I was afraid that your mom wouldn’t approve of me. She would probably think I wasn’t good enough for you.

So you got smashed so she would like you?

Mm. Pretty smart, huh?

[sighs] No, I would say not, but you know what? Mom and John, they’re very kind people. I think they’re gonna understand.

[soft classy piano music]

OK. Well, then just tell me one thing. Why am I spinning if I’m standing still?

Probably the same reason why you’re getting pale.

[Sloan groans]

[Eric sighs]

[soft jazz music]

Commander.

What are you thinking?

That prison orange is a bad color for me.

So we’ve done the investigation within the parameters of the warrant. No drugs found on the premises. All right, folks, let’s, uh, let’s wrap it up. Thank you for your patience. Uh, we’ll be out of here shortly and you can return to your dinner. I’m sorry.

Sorry? Uh, is that the best that you can do you? You defame us in public, you accuse us of a crime.

Hey, I said I’m sorry.

Yeah, and your words, they mean nothing. So you better come up with something better and much more substantial to pay for what you just did.

[phone ringing]

It’s gonna be a long night.

Yeah, this is only the beginning.

Brady, your son’s a good kid. He’s just in a bad situation. But I do have faith that Justin is gonna make things a lot better for him.

I’m glad you’re coming around about that, about Justin’s capabilities.

Yeah, I have. You know, I was unfairly critical at first, but… I’ve come to recognize that he can do this.

[approaching footsteps]

OK, I got, uh, everything that I think Tate’s gonna need. Some clothes, some books and… stuff.

[soft dramatic music] There he is, my brave boy.

Things are gonna work out. I just–I just keep telling myself that over and over again.

[notification chimes] I think it’s starting to feel real.

[soft suspenseful music]

What is it?

It’s an email from EJ.

[tense music]

I swear, if EJ comes after my child one more time–

What does it say, Justin?

EJ has accepted the judge’s order and will not appeal it.

[Alex sighs]

Yes!

Oh, God.

Oh, God. Thank you, Justin. Thank you so much for saving my son.

Of course. I’m just relieved it worked out.

You’re a damn good lawyer. And I am truly sorry for ever doubting that and doubting your skills. And I really, really hope that you can accept my apology.

I do. And no matter what’s happening between us, Alex, just know that I’m always here for you.

[soft dramatic music]

Thank you.

Look, I’m gonna go check on the police transport and, uh, find out when it will be ready to go.

OK, I’m gonna call Dad and Marlena. I’m sure they’re gonna want to see you off.

[phone ringing]

[Brady sighs]

[phone ringing]

Hey, Brady, what’s going on?

Hey, are you guys at home?

No, no, Doc and I, we’re taking Jude for an evening stroll.

OK. Well, um, Theresa and I are down at the jail. We are actually very happy to report that Tate’s gonna be transferred to a juvenile facility, and we thought you might want to see him off, you know, if you can get down here pretty quickly.

Yeah, that’s– that’s great news. And yeah, we definitely want to see him. So we’ll get down there as soon as we can. Thanks for letting us know, kid.

Great. I’ll see you soon. Your grandparents are on their way.

I don’t have to pay for anything. I executed my orders properly.

Yeah, according to you.

OK, when you’re ready to talk about what’s going on, you know where to find me.

Actually, our lawyers know where to find you. Now get the hell out of here and don’t come back.

[jazz music]

[phone ringing]

Listen, I am so sorry, everyone, for the unfortunate interruption of your dinner. Please, please. It was a mistake, so please go back to enjoying your meals and the company. And I just hope you all realize this is not a reflection on our management, but, um…

[Ava inhales deeply] Please accept our humble apologies. And dinner– dinner is on us tonight.

[chuckling] Enjoy.

[Ava sighs]

Well, thatwas an interesting conversation.

Yeah, with who? Who were you talking to?

Our valued partner.

OK.

Turns out Clyde got some insider information. Found out about the raid and had a guy come in and move the product out of here just in the nick.

Wow. That son of a bitch sure runs a tight ship.

Yeah.

Here you go.

[Sloan groans]

[soft dramatic music] Hey. You feeling better?

Sort of. Eric, I’m so, so sorry about tonight.

No, no, no, it’s OK.

[Sloan groans]

I got you water and aspirin right here. Take a sip.

You know, I just tried so hard. Like, too hard. I just made a mess of everything.

It’s OK. I’ll clean it up.

No, I don’t mean, like, my knocking stuff over. I mean I made a mess of the evening. Now your mom and John probably think I’m crazy. And I don’t even remember what I was saying to them. I think I tried to tell your mom a joke at one point.

Yeah. Yeah, you definitely tried to do that.

Did she laugh?

No.

Was my joke funny?

It doesn’t matter.

OK. Well, anyway. Oh, God, I should have not drank any alcohol, huh?

[Eric chuckles] I clearly cannot hold my liquor.

Yeah, I’ve noticed.

You know, Eric, I’ve made, like…

[soft suspenseful music] Like, I’ve made bigger mistakes than that. Like, much bigger. If I tell you, you promise you won’t be mad?

I won’t be mad. You’re the woman I love.

That’s really sweet, but if I tell you, you won’t get mad whenever I say that I–

[knock at door]

Hey, hold that thought. Hey. Thanks for taking him out. How’s he doing?

Well, he conked out the moment we left, and he’s been sleeping peacefully ever since then.

Oh, my God, that’s great. Yeah, I hope he didn’t give you a hard time.

No, not at all. He was perfect. Listen, we got to cut this short here. I just got a call from Brady.

Is everything OK?

Yeah. Tate is being transferred to a juvie facility tonight.

Oh, my God.

We’re going to the station to say goodbye to him.

Yeah, of course. You know what? Let me tell Sloan.

Uh–

[soft dramatic music] Why don’t you let her sleep? She needs it.

Yeah, you’re right. Well, I’m happy to hear about Tate. Just tell Brady I love him, OK? Tate, too.

Sure.

Thank you.

Yeah.

All right, well, good night, sweet baby. I’ll see you soon.

Call us anytime you want us to babysit her.

Oh, we will. Thank you. And thank you for taking care of him.

No, no, no problem. We love being with our grandbaby.

I’m gonna be fine, Mom.

I know you will. I love you.

I love you, too. Take care, John.

See ya.

[soft tense music]

[soft dramatic music]

Hi, big guy. How you doing? Did you have fun with your grandparents? They love you so much. And so do Mommy and I.

[baby cooing] Mommy had a rough night tonight, but that’s OK because we’re always gonna have some rough nights and days. And one day, if you ever have a rough night or a day, you always have to lean on me, OK? Because I’m your daddy. And I promise I will always be here for you. There we go. There we go.

[softly] I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

[soft somber music]

[softly] I–I just can’t believe it, for someone to move the product so quickly…

[phone ringing] And so quietly.

Yeah. Now who the hell could this be? Yeah?

Collect call from Statesville Prison. Do you accept?

Yeah, I’ll accept the charges. It’s Gabi. I’m gonna take this.

[suspenseful music]

[phone beeps]

Thanks for coming, Grandma and Grandpa.

Yeah.

We are so happy you’re going to this facility.

Yeah, I guess I am, too. I don’t know about this whole group therapy thing.

Yeah, well, just be open to it. You having a safe place to express your feelings, that’s– that’s very positive.

Yeah, yeah.

Love you, buddy.

Love you too, Grandpa.

We’ll be up to see you as soon as we’re allowed, OK?

Yeah.

Count on it.

Thank you.

OK, Tate, your bag is on the bus. It’s time to go.

[soft dramatic music]

Be strong, OK? You’ve got this.

Yeah, I hope so.

I know so.

Come here, son. Come here. We’re here for you, all right? And we’re not gonna rest until you are free. Every minute of every day, OK?

Yeah.

And you will be home soon.

Yeah, and just keep me updated with what happens with Holly.

I promise.

We will.

OK, Tate, ready?

Yeah.

Let’s go.

He’s gonna make it. He’s gonna make it. We’ll get through it together.

OK.

It’s OK.

[Alex smooches]

[Theresa sighs]

Got you, OK?

Yeah, thank you.

[smooches] Got you.

[Brady sighs]

[softly] Thank you, guys.

[tense music]

Jordan: Put the knife down? You’re giving me orders, Victor Newman. After what you did to my sister, to my family?

Victor: After what we did to your sister? Have you forgotten that your sister tried to kill my wife?

Jordan: Oh. But look at the two of you, living happily ever after. At the expense of my sister’s sanity. You destroyed her and then you allowed your daughter, Victoria, and eve’s son, Cole, to abandon their baby.

Victor: They did no such thing.

Jordan: Oh, but you know, maybe Claire was better off because you Newmans never would have loved her. Because she was cole’s daughter. She was eve’s granddaughter, but I loved her. I loved her. I gave her guidance. I gave her a purpose. And without me, she would’ve become nothing but a broken young woman.

Victor: You turned that girl into a monster.

********************************

Claire: You’ll help me? You promise?

Victoria: I’ll do whatever I can, Claire. Please. Please, you have to help us. Please.

Claire: Here. There are two, only for two people. Drink the antidote, victoria. It’ll– it’ll counteract the poison. Please, there’s not much time before it’s too late.

Victoria: I’m gonna give them to my parents.

Claire: No, Nikki doesn’t need it. Nikki doesn’t need it. She wasn’t poisoned. She was only given an iv of alcohol

Victoria: Alcohol?

Claire: Victoria, please. Just drink– drink the antidote. I’ll go– I’ll go find the others. I’m pretty sure I know where aunt jordan hid them.

Jordan: You know, you know, those denials were pretty convincing, pretty convincing, but I think that deep down, you know the truth, don’t you? I think deep down underneath all that beautiful hair that you have, you know that this beauty over here, you know the truth about her. And you’re afraid to think that perhaps you’re standing right in front of your daughter.

Victoria: The only thing I want to know is where my mother is at.

Jordan: Yes, because the mother-daughter bond is so strong, isn’t it?

Victoria: You two are deranged.

Victor: Listen, um, we can work this out. What do you want?

Jordan: I want my sister, but she’s dead and there’s nothing that you can do to bring her back. So, just stop all this negotiating, all right?

************************************†*******

Jordan: Well, all right, victor Newman. If you want to stay alive, you have to listen to me. Now, I know that you’re the alpha male who likes running the show, but you know what? This isn’t your show. This is our show. And you’re all merely the audience, understand?

Victor: Yes, I understand.

Claire: Phones. I never thought I’d see this day. Both of my parents are here.

Victoria: Stop saying that.

Claire: Why mother? Does it make you feel guilty for ignoring me all these years?

Victoria: I’m not related to you.

Claire: How do you think it felt? Knowing that both of you were just going on about your lives pretending I never existed? Just gave me away the day I was born and never looked back.

Victoria: Oh, my god. You’re claiming to be–

Claire: Sure. Sure. Yeah. You’re putting on a show for the others, pretending that you’re just putting it all together, but I can tell by the look in your eye that you’ve known exactly who I am. Mother.

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[dramatic music]

Oh, hey, I just got off the phone with the hospital.

And?

No changes, just like the last five times I called.

Did you get everything you need?

Yeah, I got her pajamas, her favorite stuffed animal, and, oh, “Little Women.” That’s her favorite book, so I thought I’d read it to her. Are you ready?

Yes.

OK.

But first I wanted to address something that happened yesterday.

OK.

I want you to know that I saw you and Eric together at the hospital. I didn’t want to disturb you.

Why not?

Well, because I know how important Eric is in Holly’s life. He was her father for a time. And I know you need as much support as you can right now.

Thank you. And I appreciate you understanding that, EJ. * * Is there something else?

Yes, there, is, actually.

[clears throat] Nicole, his… being supportive is one thing. But I admit…

[sighs] It was quite unsettling for me to see you in his arms, and I–

No, no, stop talking right now.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping] * *

Hi, sweetheart.

[door clicks open]

Hey, I brought you some–

Please don’t say coffee. I cannot drink any more coffee.

Not coffee.

[sighs] Dark, dark, dark chocolate.

[sighs]

It’s your favorite.

Yes. You are a mind reader.

Well, you’ve been a nervous wreck, so I thought I’d break out the big guns for you.

[sighs]

[inhales deeply]

[exhales heavily]

You’re just gonna…smell it?

Yeah.

OK.

Thank you.

[inhales deeply]

[exhales heavily]

[chuckles]

You know, I read somewhere that…

[inhales deeply] Breathing in the smell of dark chocolate can actually help somebody quit smoking.

Oh, yeah? That’d be helpful if either one of us smoked.

[exhales heavily] You know… I just keep thinking, what’s Tate doing right now while I’m just sitting here breathing in this chocolate? Is he cold? Is he…hungry? Is he scared?

[sighs] Is someone gonna deck him again, give him a black eye, and take his lunch? I mean… this is killing me. This is totally killing me, Brady.

[sighs]

Mom, it’s you.

OK. Hey, honey.

Well, they didn’t tell me who it was. And you’re here after visiting hours, so how did you get them to let you in?

OK, I called in a favor with the warden.

What kind of favor? Wait, forget it. I don’t want to– I don’t want to know. Forget I asked.

Yeah, probably for the best.

I am happy to see you, though…

Mm.

Even though I don’t know what you’re doing here at this hour. But if this is about Dimitri, nobody knows what happened to that guy. He just disappeared. And the rumor is, he’s in Supermax.

Well, it’s not about Dimitri. The reason I’m here tonight is because someone wants to talk to you.

[door clicks open]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Nice throw, buddy. You’re gonna be a pro at this.

[soft music] No, OK, it’s all right. It’s all right. We’ll keep practicing the catching.

You know, we need to have guys’ night every night.

Yeah? I don’t know how your sister would feel about that idea.

But this is so fun.

You know what? It is fun. I love hanging out with you, and I love you, and I’m proud of you, OK? Come here.

God, and we thought having him away at boarding school was tough.

[chuckles]

I know. I keep thinking about how– how much I missed him, how much I was worrying. Wow. That was a walk in the park compared to this.

Oh, yeah, sure was. You know what? I’m thinking if I could engineer one of those jailbreaks, you know, like they do in the movies, I think I would do it.

[sly music] Don’t look at me that way. I’m not gonna do it. I wouldn’t even know where to start.

Are you kidding me? I wish you would. I would drive the getaway car.

[both chuckle]

I am not gonna listen to this.

Nicole, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything.

No. You shouldn’t have. EJ, how could you be jealous at a time like this? Honey… look, even you pointed out that Eric was Holly’s stepfather for a while. And you also pointed out that he’s still an important part of her life. So naturally, when Eric heard about Holly, he went to the hospital. And full disclosure because I do not want any secrets between us… Eric was there for Holly on Christmas morning when she was hungover and needed moral support.

You knew Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve?

Yes. When we came home Christmas morning, I went upstairs to check on her, and she felt awful. She had a headache, and she was nauseous, and she told me everything. How did you find out?

Johnny told me. He said that she drunk-dialed him and left a rather long, rather incoherent message. He was worried, obviously, and so he rushed back home to check on her.

And why didn’t you tell me that?

Well, I didn’t want to upset you. You were already at wits’ end. Why didn’t you tell me at Christmas?

[chuckles] Because Holly was embarrassed, and she didn’t want anyone to know.

But it was fine to tell Eric?

I didn’t tell Eric. Honey, Holly and I ran into him when we went on our walk Christmas morning. And she tried to hide the fact that she was hungover, but Eric, being a recovering alcoholic, could see right through it. So…he was just very kind to her, and he was not judgmental at all.

Hmm.

Oh, no. OK, what are you thinking? You suddenly got so worried.

[groans]

[sighs] I– I wasn’t sure that I was even going to bring this up, but you’re gonna find out sooner or later.

Find out what?

Rafe contacted me earlier and said that he has been questioning Holly’s high school friends. And they admitted that they have been dabbling in weed, and so has she.

[dramatic music]

This is Harris Michaels.

Yeah, yeah, I heard of you. You’re the one who tried to shoot my cousin Hope when you were about to get married, no less.

I was brainwashed back then by Megan DiMera.

And you didn’t tell her that her husband was alive? You just forgot to tell her that? That just slipped your mind?

OK, Lucas, really, that’s all in the past, all right, and do I need to remind you that Harris was one of the people who rescued me from Dimitri’s boat? He actually saved my life, so…

So you trust this guy?

I do.

Well, then I guess I do too, right? I don’t have a choice now. What do you want? What the hell do you want from me?

[sighs] Well, I– I’m with the Salem PD now. And I’m just exploring something on my own until I see if anything comes of it. But… I’m here tonight… to offer you a deal.

Hut!

[grunts]

Ooh!

[laughs] What’s up, Alex? A little help, man?

Yeah.

[sighs] There you go, little dude.

[chuckles]

My dad knows you, so I guess you’re not a stranger.

Ah, yeah, well, glad to hear you’re keeping your eyes wide open for strangers.

Well, I drop the ball a lot, so maybe they’re not wide open enough.

Oh. See, there’s a trick to this. Here, let me see. You got to keep your eyes on the ball. When it’s coming in, get those hands out. Spread the fingers wide. Brab that ball. Bring it in tight. Hug it. That’s it. You got it?

Got it.

You sure? Oh, you got it.

[laughs]

Thanks, man.

Anytime. Well, I’ll let you two get back to it.

Hey, want to play Monkey in the Middle with us? We couldn’t before ’cause we didn’t have three people.

He’s been dying to play Monkey in the Middle. No pressure, but if you got time…

Oh, I got time.

[laughs] Let’s do it.

You’re new, so you’re the monkey.

I’m the monkey? Gotcha. OK. Let me assume my position. All right, let’s do this.

[dramatic music]

Oop!

Ooh, ooh. I see that. I see that. There we go. Come on, come on, come on, ah! Come on.

[laughs] All right, all right, all right.

[sighs] We had so many talks, so many mornings when we definitely laid down the law about the dangers of drugs.

Yeah. And I know that you and I have lived apart for many years, Brady, but… We were always united on that front, weren’t we? Hey. Do you think he broke our rules?

I don’t know. Seems unlikely, but–

But that would explain why– why he said it at first and then he backed off, right? I mean, I hate– I hate to think it myself, but I–

I know. I know. I’ve thought it too. I’ve thought about it too. I even said it out loud to my dad. Bottom line is, hey, we weren’t there. We don’t know.

We weren’t there with him at school either, were we, causing trouble? I mean, maybe we shouldn’t have sent him to boarding school in the first place.

I know. I thought about that too. Maybe we shouldn’t have. I mean–I mean, he spent a lot of time away from us lately, especially me. I haven’t been ar– I mean, I called him. I visited. I had him here for summer on vacation. I thought I was close to him, I thought I knew who he was, and now I’m sitting here thinking, hey, Dad, maybe you didn’t know your son as well as you thought you did.

So… Holly’s friends told Rafe that she smoked weed.

They did.

[sighs] I know I– I shouldn’t be shocked, but… I am.

As am I. Her night of drinking also caught me by surprise as well, but I just chalked it up to a one-time thing.

Yeah, me too. Well, I mean… at least weed is legal here.

Not if you’re not yet .

[sighs] Well, now I can’t help but wonder– I mean, what if– I mean, would Holly go beyond that? Would she– would she take something more hard-core?

[groans]

Oh, you are awake.

Mom, hey.

Hi. Why are you taking aspirin before you get out of bed?

What are you thinking?

You know… that morning she was hungover, I saw her take pills that I thought could have been aspirin, but maybe not.

Nicole, Nicole, look at me. Let’s not jump to any dire conclusions, OK? Holly was hungover. The logical explanation is, she had a headache. She took aspirin for it.

[sighs]

And experimenting occasionally with marijuana does not make her an addict, OK?

OK, OK. You know, but we also don’t know if Tate’s really using drugs. He’s a good kid.

Why would you think that? Like, the only reason he is now living in Salem is because he was expelled from boarding school. How does that qualify him as a good kid?

Well, OK, but how did he get expelled, all right? Was it because of some dumb prank that went sideways? Kids do stupid things. I’m stating the obvious. And that just might include Holly. It’s just that– that doing drugs is just a lot worse than being stupid, isn’t it, because it’s illegal, and it’s dangerous.

[sighs] And I– I can’t believe I’m gonna say this… but maybe Holly isn’t as honest and innocent as I thought she was.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping]

You know, you’ve grown up so much. Feels like yesterday you were just a little girl. My little girl. I remember… the first time you called me Daddy. Holly, I just want to tell you how sorry I am. You know, when I left you and your mom to go to Africa, I just thought it was the right thing to do. But now I know that there is– there was nothing more important in this world than you are to me and being your dad.

[smooches]

Now I get a deal? What kind of deal?

Well, you may be or may not be aware of the drug problem in Salem. But a dealer was caught who was back in the game for less than hours after he was released from Statesville. And I questioned him. And I believe that whoever’s behind this drug epidemic is right here inside this prison. So I spoke to Mayor Price, and she gave me the green light to take action. That’s where you come in. I need your help getting intel on the inside.

You got to be out of your damn mind.

[sighs]

[dramatic music]

You ever hear the saying “snitches get stitches”? You’ve heard of that, right? Well, here it’s different. You don’t get stitches. You get broken bones. You get your skull stepped on. That’s what happens. When I was in the yard the other day, I saw somebody get shanked. They got shanked just for reporting contraband, for a freaking cell phone. They carried the guy out in a body bag.

I know it’s a lot to ask.

Yeah, no kidding.

Yeah, but I also know that you were an undercover prison informant before, Lucas, right, years ago? And that last year, you really helped John Black, Steve Johnson, Roman Brady with a certain Orpheus situation.

I thought that Orpheus killed my mother. And you don’t even know how many times I almost got popped and how many times I almost lost my life. I can’t, all right? You’re gonna have to fight the good fight against drugs on your own, OK? I am not your guy. My informant days are over.

OK, I get it. I understand your reservations. I do. But maybe you’ll change your mind if I tell you how I can help you.

How? How the hell can you help me?

If you’re willing to do what I ask you to do, I will get you out of here.

You’re good with Thomas, man. I appreciate it.

Thank you.

[chuckles] You know, to be honest, I never really understood the whole parenthood thing. You know, there’s no training or prep or degree. You just jump into it. How the hell did you know what to do?

Yeah, well, you don’t. But luckily, their brains aren’t as developed as ours, so they have no clue that we’re just tap-dancing our way through it.

Right?

Yeah.

[laughs]

We have no clue what we’re doing.

Makes sense. Thing is, Theresa has a teenager, and the teen brain is developed.

Debatable.

Yeah.

I mean, that’s different than what I’m dealing with. At least my kids still listen to me.

Mm.

Do you get along with Theresa’s kid?

You know, we haven’t had a whole lot of interaction, really. I barely know him. I don’t even know if I’ll get the chance to now, given he’s in so much trouble.

Yeah, she must be a wreck.

She is a wreck. I’ve been trying to help her out as best I can. I’m trying to navigate the situation with her, but instead I totally blew it with her.

[sighs]

Brady, I totally understand what you’re feeling. I feel it too. Did I miss a sign or something? Could I have prevented this somehow, or…

[sighs] Is it just that Tate takes after me?

OK, hey, Theresa, don’t. No.

[sighs] No, I’m serious. I mean, I’m starting to feel like I’m responsible. Maybe I’m the one who failed our son.

[breathing heavily]

What are you thinking?

I just said I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Yeah, neither do I. But, EJ, Rafe said that Holly’s friends admitted to smoking pot, which is considered fairly benign these days, right? But if they were taking a more powerful drug, do you really think they would tell the cops? Do you really think Holly would tell us? No, no way.

No, no, I suppose not.

Oh.

[sighs] Now I’m realizing that it’s possible that I’ve deluded myself about Holly for a while now. You know, I thought that she was well-balanced and responsible and that if she was struggling or she had an issue that she would talk to me and I could get her the help she needed.

[sighs] EJ, I just–I never thought that she would resort to drugs. Oh, God, we got to get going. We have to get back to the hospital. I’ll meet you in the car.

OK.

OK.

[sighs] Dear God, could Tate have been telling the truth?

[sighs]

How’d you blow it with Theresa? What’d you do?

You know everything that went down with Tate and Holly, right?

Oh, yeah. It’s “The Spectator’s” biggest story right now. If that was Thomas and Charlotte, I’d be losing my mind.

Yeah, well, Theresa, she sure the hell is. And I’m trying to be supportive, but I guess I crossed a boundary of hers or whatever. She kicked me out of the room…

Hmm.

Told me she wanted to be alone with Brady so they could discuss their son.

Well, that must have been tough for you.

Yeah, but I mean, I get it, you know? Brady’s Tate’s dad. I understand that. I’m just trying to figure out what the hell my role is in all this. I’m the boyfriend of the woman with the teenager going through a terrible time. It’s new territory for me. I’m a little lost. I keep screwing things up.

Right. Well, why don’t you ask your dad for advice?

[scoffs]

Justin, I mean. I know he’s not your biological father, but he raised teenage boys.

Yeah, unfortunately, him and I aren’t on the best of terms at the moment either– also my fault.

How so?

[dramatic music]

[sighs] I guess it’s just because my whole life has been turned upside down. This whole Victor thing, him being my real dad… did a number on my head. I keep lashing out at Justin for no good reason. I don’t know, man, maybe it’s just in my blood to ruin all my relationships.

[sighs]

Theresa, look. Hey, hey, stop. It’s not your fault. Anything that happened with Tate and Holly that night is not your fault. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s probably mine. I’m the one that hasn’t been there– enough anyway, obviously.

Brady, that’s–

No, I should have– I should have been there more. I should have been able to help him, and I should’ve been able to– to be there more.

Tate knows how much you love him.

[scoffs]

He knows. He knows he can reach out to you anytime and you’ll be there for him.

Well, thank you for saying that.

[sighs] God, I just keep replaying that night over and over in my head.

[sighs]

[laughs] Oh, Tate looked so handsome.

Oh, yeah.

And he was so excited to be on his first date with Holly. You know how hard he was crushing on her?

Oh, crushing hard on her.

[sighs]

Yeah.

We were all just having fun, weren’t we?

No, hold on. Speak for–speak for yourself. You were dancing with Alex.

Yeah, I wish I wasn’t.

I was a big old third wheel that night. I should’ve had my eye on Tate. I should’ve been watching Holly and Tate the whole time. Why wasn’t I doing that?

No. I should never, ever have let him go that night. I’m his mother. I’m his mother. He’s only . I mean, my poor baby! How did this go so wrong? How did we– how did this happen?

Stop, stop, stop.

How did this happen?

Stop, stop!

How?

Stop.

How did this happen?

[sighs]

Not your fault.

[sobs]

I don’t get it. How you gonna get me out of here?

Like I said before, I’ve spoken to Mayor Price. Look, I wouldn’t even be here if I hadn’t been assured that the right people in the right places would guarantee your release.

It’s tempting. It is. I want nothing more than to get the hell out of this place. But I can’t risk my life doing it. I think I’m just gonna keep my head down, and I’m gonna be a good boy, and I’m gonna do my time. That’s it.

You have your answer. We should go.

[sighs]

You’re a good man, and you’re a wonderful son.

[sighs] And as much as I miss you terribly and your children miss you terribly and all of us who love you miss you terribly, I understand your decision.

[sighs] And I respect it. I love you. I’ll see you soon.

[sighs]

Wait, hold it, hold it. Maybe I’ll do it. Maybe, maybe I’ll do what you’re asking.

I am gonna find a nurse and see if there’s any updates. I’ll meet you in there.

Sounds good.

OK.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping]

Eric. You’re back.

I didn’t want her to be alone.

[dramatic music]

How–how long have you been here?

About an hour. I was told that you and Nicole went home for a while.

Eric.

Nicole, I was just telling EJ that I was told that you and EJ went home for a break, so I– I thought I’d stay with Holly.

That’s very kind of you.

Would you like me to get out of here? I could grab us some coffee.

No, no.

EJ–

You need to be here too.

EJ, you’re a part of Holly’s life now. You’re her stepfather, so please stay.

Mm.

Wow, we really have the parental guilt covered, don’t we?

Oh, we’re good at that.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, we got that down. I–I want to say something to you.

[sighs] I know I give you a lot of crap. But I know that you have done the best that you can do with our boy. I know that.

Thank you. That really means a lot.

Well…

I know I’ve given you a lot of crap too. You really deserve it.

[laughs] I’m just kidding. I’m kidding.

Thanks.

No, really, though, Brady, you’re a really good father. You’re really a loving father.

Thanks, Theresa. You know, we really have to stop beating ourselves up about this. Hey, we’re not perfect, right? Close, but…

[laughs] We’re never gonna be perfect, and we’re doing the best we can. I think the best thing we can do for our son right now is believe in him and believe him. I know in my heart that our kid did not do this. That’s what I believe.

That’s right. From now on, no more doubts. Our son is innocent. Yeah.

[sighs]

No, Lucas, no, you just listed very valid reasons why you shouldn’t do it.

I know what I said, but you told me that everybody misses me. You told me that my family misses me, my kids miss me. What do you expect me to do? Of course I want to get out of here. I want my life back. So how about I just start out slow? All right, I’ll just dip my toe in a little, see what I can find out.

No! No, because I don’t want to see you be the next one who gets shanked and carried out in a body bag. This–we’re done here. OK, this was a huge mistake, because we’ve probably already put him in danger just by being here.

Yeah, OK, Kate. Is there any way you can tell the guard that we’re just ready to go? I want to give Lucas some tips on avoiding blowback because we were here tonight.

[sighs] I love you. I’ll see you soon. Be right back.

You don’t have any tips, do you?

No, I don’t. I just want to make sure you heard about Holly Jonas.

Nicole’s daughter, what about her?

She’s in a coma. She overdosed on New Year’s Eve, and she is fighting for her life, Lucas. I need you to help me save kids like her. So if you do this, I will do everything to protect you. You have my word. What do you say?

I’ll do it. But you got to promise me– you got to promise me that you’re gonna protect me. You have to guarantee that I get out of here once I get you the information you need.

You have it. Thank you.

OK, guard’s waiting.

[sighs]

[sighing]

He convinced you. Damn it, Lucas! Are you sure about this?

Yes, I’m sure. I want to help kids like Holly, and I want to get the hell out of this place as soon as possible.

[dramatic music]

If anything happens to you–

Mom, it’s a chance I have to take. Relax.

Be careful. And you keep him safe.

Yeah, you better listen to her. She’ll kick your ass if you don’t.

I don’t doubt that.

OK. I’ll contact my lawyer. Don’t do anything until we have this in writing.

Not my first rodeo, Mom.

And, Lucas, for your safety, maybe you should put on a show, if you know what I mean.

Hey, you know what? Why don’t you guys get out of here? The answer is no! I’m not a rat!

All right. You’re making a big mistake.

I don’t rat people out!

You want to rot? You rot.

Yeah, I’ll rot in here. Better than being with you guys. Beat it! Hit the road! Don’t ever come back here again! Losers!

Look, man, I get it. You know, when I found out that Stefano was my father, I was a grown man. You know, and I struggled with it for a long time, you know, dealing with… everything that comes with being a DiMera. You know, but eventually, I came to terms with it.

Hmm.

And so will you.

Yeah. I just don’t want to really think about all that right now. I just want to do right by Theresa, make sure that she’s good and do what I can to help.

Hi, Dad. Oh, hey. You’re still here.

Hey.

What’s up, buddy? How was it?

It was so good. Cooper and his mom had to leave, but can we play some more?

Well, I don’t know. What are you thinking, a little bit of… Monkey in the Middle?

[groans]

Huh?

Who’s gonna be the monkey?

Who’s gonna be the monkey? both: , , , not it!

Aw, come on.

[groans]

He’s the monkey. He’s the monkey.

Yeah.

He’s the monkey.

All right.

He’s the monkey.

Let’s do this.

OK.

[playful music]

So what do we do now?

[sighs] Tell you what we do. We–

Huh?

We find a way to prove that our son is innocent. And we vow that no matter what the hell it takes, we never give up on our son.

[dramatic music]

I solemnly vow that I will never give up on our son.

[inhales deeply] Oh, I feel like I can breathe again.

[inhales deeply]

[exhales heavily] To never giving up.

To never giving up.

[both chuckle]

Hey, sweetheart. It’s me. It’s Mom. And we’re all here, waiting for you to come back to us.

[monitor beeping]

What did the nurse say when you checked in?

No change.

Nicole… I think it might be time to discuss other options.

What do you mean?

I mentioned before that I made a few calls. The first one was to the clinic in Italy that brought me back from the brink of death. They were very encouraging when I spoke to them about Holly’s condition. And although they couldn’t promise– they couldn’t promise anything, I really do think it could help her. It’s an extraordinary facility, world-renowned.

OK, I appreciate the call, I do, but the doctors– the doctors have been great. They’ve done so much for her. And is–is taking her to Italy really the answer? What if something happens to her while she’s traveling?

We’ll take every precaution. I’ll hire an expert physician who will accompany us for the entire trip. They will never leave her side. You just say the word, and I’ll make the arrangements.

OK, I’ll consider it. I just want to talk to Kayla first.

Of course, of course.

OK.

Eric… I just wanted to thank you for being there for Holly and Nicole. It’s very much appreciated.

They both deserve all the support they can get.

Yeah.

As do you.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping] Listen, I can say a prayer, which I have been doing for all of you, but we can say one together, if you’d like, right now.

Yeah.

Yes, let’s do that.

[sighs] Heavenly Father, we stand together and turn to you now in prayer, asking you to send upon Holly your love, your mercy, and your grace for a healthy and speedy recovery.

Amen.

Amen.

Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven… all: Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power…

And the glory…

And the glory…

Forever and ever.

Forever and ever. all: Amen.

Transcript provided by Suzanne

Mariah: All right. So, you all got the press packets, digitally. There’s gonna be a step and repeat out front for VIP guests and I promise the best angles because our guests are so fabulous. And remember, this is a celebration. It’s not a press junket, so no interviews, unfortunately. Okay? Have a great event, you guys. Oh, my gosh. Thank you so much. You are a lifesaver for bringing this.

Tessa: I’m dying to know what it is.

Mariah: Um, it’s a little surprise that Sharon has for later on.

Tessa: Oh, well, you can trust me, I’m family. You know I can keep a secret.

Mariah: No, no, no, no. Excuse me. Can you put this in the lounge somewhere discreet where nobody can see it? Thank you.

Tessa: Geez. Playing the wife card usually gets me a lot farther. I must be losing my touch.

Mariah: No, your wifely wiles will always work on me. But in this case, you’re gonna have to wait with everybody else.

Devon: Hey, Billy.

Billy: Hey. Hey, do you have a minute? I wanna touch base on a few things.

Devon: Yeah, sure.

Billy: Thanks.

Devon: How are you uh, settling in?

Billy: Yeah, good. Everything feels good. It doesn’t feel like too much has changed since I left. And to that end, did you get a chance to look at those proposals I sent over?

Devon: I did.

Billy: Ah, and you love them, I can tell.

Devon: Well, no, I didn’t have a chance to look at them enough to make a decision. And I usually like to weigh all the ramifications before I do that, you know?

Billy: Yeah. No, I– I do know that. I know that was a sticking point with Nate, but Nate was new to the game. My ideas come with years of experience.

Devon: Right. I’m aware of that, Billy. Not always successful though.

Billy: Well, don’t take too long. Some of those ideas have an expiration date.

Devon: Well, they might have to expire because I’m not gonna be rushed.

Abby: Hey, you two.

Chelsea: I told you they’d still be working.

Devon: Hi. How you doing?

Abby: Hey.

Billy: Looks like date night. Hopefully, you can convince Devon to leave the office early. I think he could use a little fun.

Abby: Uh, actually, we are headed to the launch party for Sharon’s new company.

Chelsea: Us too. Double date?

Diane: Can you help me with this? I can’t seem to zip it.

Jack: Here we go. Up and–

Diane: Thank you.

Jack: And clasped.

Diane: Well, that’s embarrassing. I’ve been struggling for minutes.

Jack: Well, we all need an assist sometimes. Speaking of which, is my tie too short?

Diane: No, your tie is perfect. Just like you. You look extra handsome.

Jack: And you look particularly ravishing.

Diane: Mm. I’m ready to network. I can imagine that tonight’s going to be a who’s who of Genoa City’s business elite.

Jack: Well, was that your nice way of saying conversation should be pretty dull?

Diane: No, with Mariah in charge, it can’t possibly be boring. Although, I am still upset that we lost her to Sharon. She’s been hard to replace.

Jack: Well, we can’t blame her for wanting to work with family.

Diane: Speaking of which, I’ve been thinking there’s an upside to Tucker figuring out our– Well, Kyle’s plan.

Jack: Do tell.

Diane: Well, Kyle can drop the act. He can stop pretending that you snubbed him for the top spot and you can promote him.

Jack: There’s plenty of time for that.

Diane: Yeah, but why wait? I mean, he’s certainly proven himself in our battle against Tucker.

Jack: Yes, he has, but as I said, there is no rush. What we have to rush is getting out of here. We’re gonna be late.

Nick: There she is, the woman of the hour.

Sharon: Aw, you shouldn’t have.

Nick: Those are from Noah and Faith.

Sharon: Oh, well, that’s very sweet of them. They both called earlier.

Nick: And this is from me.

Sharon: Oh, wow. Oh, my gosh. I’m really doing this, aren’t I?

Nick: You really are and me and the kids could not be prouder.

Sharon: Thank you. That means everything. Oh, Simone, could you put this someplace safe for me?

Nick: Thank you so much. Appreciate that. I, uh, saw Mariah upstairs whipping the press into shape.

Sharon: She’s amazing. I know how lucky I am to have her on my team.

Nick: You really are. It’s gonna be a stellar event and you’re not the least bit nervous?

Sharon: You know, not that long ago, this would have been very daunting, but tonight, launching my own company just feels like a natural fit. I– I had a dream the other night that put some things in perspective, and now, a part of that dream is reality.

Adam: Is that part of tonight’s theme? Dreams do come true?

Phyllis: Hey. Hey, sorry, I’m late. I was uh, at the Athletic Club when I got your text, so…

Summer: Oh, yeah. It’s fine. Sorry for the last change of plans.

Phyllis: No problem. So, why did you wanna change the venue?

Summer: Uh, well, they are serving this new specialty cocktail here. I was really craving it.

Phyllis: Oh, this one? Can I have a sip?

Summer: Uh.

Phyllis: Mm. It’s hard to get a seltzer water anywhere in this town.

Summer: Well, I hadn’t ordered my drink yet, Mom. Thank you. I was waiting for you.

Phyllis: Yeah, just maybe, you know. Okay, I happen to be aware of Sharon’s launch party in the jazz lounge at the Athletic Club, where I was just sitting.

Summer: Yeah, I didn’t really want to run into that crowd.

Phyllis: Or maybe you really didn’t want to run into Sharon and Chance?

Chelsea: Shall we head out?

Devon: I actually have a few more emails I need to take care of.

Billy: Well, take your time.

Devon: I always do. Uh, do you mind? It will only take a second.

Abby: No, no, we have time.

Devon: Okay.

Chelsea: No problem. We’ll just meet you guys there.

Abby: Okay.

Devon: Perfect.

Chelsea: Hey, uh, is everything okay with you and Devon?

Billy: Yeah, everything’s fine. Why?

Chelsea: Are you sure? It seemed a little tense in there.

Billy: Just a difference in business styles, you know? That’s all. We stay out of each other’s way for the most part.

Chelsea: Well, you are trying to run a company together. I mean, it is important that you talk every once in a while.

Billy: We talk. Look, I don’t think Devon expected me to come back at Jill’s request, right? So, I think he’s being a little aloof right now.

Chelsea: Aloof how?

Billy: When you walked in, I was asking him about a proposal that I sent his way that he’s been taking his time on. That’s about it. That’s the microscopic tension that you picked up on.

Chelsea: Is he stonewalling?

Billy: I think Devon’s used to having autonomy. He’s been running the company with Lily and now, I’m here and Nate’s back. Not to mention Jill, Mamie, and Chance.

Chelsea: That’s the opposite of autonomy.

Billy: It is. But Devon’s a pro. He’ll adjust.

Abby: How are things going working with Billy?

Devon: Oh, we’re finding our groove.

Abby: I can see that.

Devon: He’s just used to working one-on-one with Jack, fast tracking his ideas, you know? We operate a little different around here. But he’ll adjust. And I’m playing nice. I promise.

Abby: Yeah, I could feel the warmth when I walked into the room. But, hey, we are gonna keep work in the office tonight because this is a very important night for Sharon.

Devon: Yes. Yes, it is. And I promise that she and you will have my full attention.

Sharon: I’m so glad you both could make it.

Sally: Congratulations, Sharon. I’m really happy for you and your new chapter.

Sharon: Thank you. So am I. And these two scored a big win at Newman with Victor.

Adam: Things are going well, so I feel pretty lucky.

Nick: Don’t be modest, Adam. It’s not about luck. You tend to go pretty hard after the things you want.

Adam: Well, anything worth having is worth the effort. But yes, things are going well, so we all have something to drink to.

Nick: Just as long as you remember this night is about Sharon.

Sharon: And I couldn’t have done it without the two of you. Your input, even at the beginning, just helped me figure out what I wanted to create.

Nick: Well, it is great to see you realize that vision.

Adam: Absolutely. And Sally’s design business seems to be taking off quite well.

Sally: Thanks to Nick’s investment.

Adam: Have you considered hiring her to design your offices, Sharon?

Sally: Adam, you can’t just put Sharon on the spot like that. Can you go get me a champagne, please?

Sharon: I would like one too.

Nick: Yeah, we’ll take care of that. Let’s go.

Sharon: Once again, Adam seems to be your biggest fan.

Sally: I am sorry for the hard sell. He’s just been a huge cheerleader for my designs.

Sharon: And you know, that’s not what I meant.

Sally: I’m cautiously optimistic about us. Seems like the same could be said for you and Nick.

Sharon: Um, he’s just here as my date.

Sally: Just?

Sharon: Well, it’s not a date date. Nick just always manages to be there for me when I need him.

Adam: Champagne. Sorry about the, uh, awkwardness with Nick.

Sally: I mean, he seemed fine back at the club.

Adam: When we were very obviously going up to your suite.

Sally: Yeah, I mean, it’s just gonna take some time for him to get used to it, I suppose. Seeing us together in public.

Adam: How do you feel about that?

Sally: Well, I mean, I’d imagine no one’s really that surprised. Sharon wasn’t.

Adam: Did she give you a hard time?

Sally: Not at all. No. And as for how I feel, it’s wonderful.

Mariah: Hi. Nick, asked me to bring you this from the bar. I pointed him towards some muckety mucks over there. His job is to mingle and to hype you up.

Sharon: Well, thank you. How are you? How’s everything going?

Mariah: It’s great. Uh, the press is here. So, I gave the green light to start passing drinks. And then in a little bit, I’m gonna signal you for a short speech. So, your job is just to schmooze for now. And then at the end, we’re gonna pass out the Jabot gift bags full of goodies. And here is Jabot now. Hi, guys.

Jack: Hi, Sharon.

Sharon: Hi.

Jack: Congratulations.

Sharon: Thank you so much.

Jack: We could not be happier for you with this new chapter in your life.

Diane: It’s very exciting, although I’m not sure I forgive you for stealing Mariah away from us. I was telling Jack earlier that you’re really hard to replace.

Sharon: She is irreplaceable, but you won’t get any apologies from me. All’s fair in business.

Jack: Well, you’ve done a wonderful job, starting with the digital invitation.

Sharon: Oh, wasn’t that clever? That was all her idea.

Mariah: I mean, how are you gonna launch a tech company with paper invites? Am I right?

Jack: Well, you are missed at Jabot.

Mariah: I’m sorry to leave you guys on the lurch, but I had to go with my most favorite mogul.

Jack: Working with family is special. No argument here.

Billy: Hi. Uh, two champagnes, please.

Adam: Chelsea.

Chelsea: Hey.

Adam: Glad to see you. I actually, uh, meant to call you earlier.

Chelsea: Is everything okay?

Adam: Yeah, I just wanted to talk about Connor’s latest report card. You know, it’s not the A’s that we’re used to seeing, so I was a little worried.

Chelsea: He’s just getting used to his new school, Adam. You have to let him find his rhythm.

Adam: I guess you are right.

Sally: Connor’s a great kid.

Chelsea: Well, he’s a big fan of yours.

Sally: The feeling is mutual.

Adam: Billy, I heard you left Jabot. That was fast.

Billy: Yeah, it was. Although, I lasted longer than you did.

Adam: Do you have an office pool on how long you’re gonna last, uh, back at Chancellor-Winters?

Billy: Maybe. I’m not aware, you know, I’m not a gambling man anymore. Although, if you’re looking for a job, I can put a good word in. Not sure it’ll help, but…

Adam: No, thanks. Nothing can rival my co-CEO job at Newman.

Chelsea: What? Oh, that’s big news. I had no idea.

Adam: Yep. Back in the, uh, family business.

Sally: Yeah, he and Nick are doing great working together.

Adam: Well, so far so good. But Sally’s design business is really taking off and it’s something that she built from scratch, all on her own. Not like, uh, sliding back into a family business like you and me. It’s, uh, it’s all her.

Devon: Wow. Who are you looking for?

Abby: No, I mean, I just still kind of feel awkward at these things about running into Chance.

Devon: Oh, well, I don’t see him.

Abby: Well, he would never miss Sharon’s big night. I wonder where he is.

Phyllis: So, about Chance?

Summer: Okay, fine. You’re right. I didn’t want to see Chance with Sharon at the party. And can that please be the end of that conversation?

Phyllis: Well, I understand that you don’t want to make a play for Chance at that party, but that doesn’t mean that–

Summer: No, Mom, please, enough. I don’t want any more of your advice to go for it. Which by the way, Sharon heard you giving that to me. Very unhelpful.

Phyllis: Well, that’s very unfortunate.

Summer: It is unfortunate. Luckily, she was relatively cool about it.

Phyllis: I mean, I stand by my advice, I do. You know, and that she was so relatively cool about it, should tell you something. Obviously, she’s not that interested in him. Why should you give up your shot at happiness when Sharon’s not even going to fight for her man?

Summer: You know what? I think she was kind of cool about it because she was considering the source. She knew the advice was coming from you. And honestly, you know what, Mom? I’m glad that it happened because it kind of gave me this opening to shoot my shot with Chance and I did. I asked him to lunch and I gotta respect the fact that he said no.

Phyllis: Well, there is no problem with two friends sharing a meal together. I just want you to be happy.

Summer: Well, it’s not gonna be with Chance.

Phyllis: I’m so mad at Kyle.

Summer: Okay, where is that coming from?

Phyllis: I am so mad at him. I mean, him going on and on and on about how wrong you were for being loyal to me while he did the same exact thing with his sorry excuse for a mother. And then he cheated on you. It’s because of him that you’re doubting that you deserve a chance at happiness.

Summer: Look, Mom, I don’t want to hear it anymore. I don’t want you to keep telling me that I should just keep going after this guy. I don’t want to do it. I played dirty. I crossed lines to get what I want in the past.

Phyllis: Okay. All right.

Summer: Well, that’s just not me anymore. I’d like to think that I’ve grown beyond it. And if I took your advice now, I would be ashamed of myself.

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. Was that a slam? Was that a hit on me? Well, let me tell you something. I will never, ever regret going after what I want.

Summer: Mom, can you relax? It was not a jab at you. >>

Phyllis: It sounded like a jab. It sounded like you were calling me immature.

Summer: I was not. I wasn’t. Trust me, I know that I wouldn’t even be here if you hadn’t crossed some lines.

Phyllis: Wow. You know, Summer, you were born of love and love alone. It’s the same kind of love I want for you in your life.

Summer: And I will have that when the time is right. And I’m okay with being alone until then. Oh, I gotta go. I gotta finish up some work before I call it a night.

Phyllis: Okay. You know I only love you, right? And I want you to have every bit of happiness that you deserve. And you deserve so much. You know that, right?

Summer: I hope that you know that I want that for both of us. Goodnight, Mom.

Phyllis: Goodnight.

Jack: Well, you’re both looking well. I guess this new job agrees with you, huh?

Billy: Uh, you know, no complaints. Let’s say that.

Diane: Mm. How nice for you.

Abby: Hi.

Jack: Hi, Abby. Hey, Devon, we were just talking about how my brother’s doing at his new job at Chancellor-Winters.

Devon: Oh, yeah, so far so good. He’s familiar with us, so he’s hit the ground running.

Abby: You know what? I anticipate nothing but success.

Chelsea: Me too.

Diane: Um, Devon, I’m sure this is a sensitive subject, but we’re all still worried about Tucker’s intentions towards Jabot. He’s been awfully quiet since the news of his scandal broke. Do you have any insights about that?

Jack: I wouldn’t mind hearing that myself.

Billy: Be nice to know if he’s coming after Chancellor-Winters still.

Devon: Yeah, I agree. I’d love to know all that too, but, uh, we’re gonna have to find that out from someone else because we don’t speak anymore.

Jack: Oh?

Devon: Yeah.

Jack: Well, I’m sorry to hear that. I know Ashley will be too. She always felt that his relationship with you and Dom was Tucker’s one saving grace.

Devon: Well, he’s gonna have to save himself these days, if that’s even possible.

Diane: Well, I guess no one knows Tucker’s goals at this point.

Abby: Well, you know what? I declare this a Tucker-free zone. This is Sharon’s big night.

Diane: Yes, that’s a good idea. And I have to say the signature cocktails are delicious.

Billy: That does look good and there’s a tray right behind me, so I’ll see you in a second.

Abby: Yeah, let’s go say hi to Nick.

Devon: Let’s do it.

Jack: Hey, at the risk of being a little blunt, how’s Billy really doing?

Chelsea: You really love your brother, don’t you? I can hear the concern in your voice.

Jack: I do love him. And I am concerned that he has made an impetuous decision based on his feelings for me.

Chelsea: You don’t have to worry about Billy. I know this may be hard to hear, but I– I really think leaving Jabot has been good for him.

Jack: Okay. That does sting a little bit. But you know what? If it’s true, I’m all for it.

Chelsea: I think Billy is in this wonderful phase of new possibilities, you know? Creating his own ideas instead of reacting to what he thinks you want. He’s trusting his instincts, which are better than he gives himself credit for. And he’s brilliant and– and thoughtful and I think very happy.

Jack: It seems I’m not the only one here with affection for my brother. If leaving Jabot is a good idea for him, I think spending time with you is even better.

Summer: Chance?

Chance: Hi. What’s up?

Summer: What are you doing here?

Chance: Um, I’m just reading up on all things Chancellor-Winters. It’s still a pretty steep learning curve for me.

Summer: But shouldn’t you be at Sharon’s launch party?

Christine: Oh, God. Come on. I’m not in the mood. I just wanted to come and have a cocktail, catch up on emails. No drama.

Phyllis: I couldn’t agree more. Which is why I’m buying. I’m buying. I want to apologize to you.

Phyllis: So, um, I just wanted to apologize for the way that I acted, um, last time we spoke. It was actually Summer who got me to see that I was–

Christine: That you were behaving like a bratty little teenager?

Phyllis: Well, I wasn’t behaving like myself, you know? Seeing you and Danny, I just– just fell into old patterns. That’s all.

Christine: Yeah, like I said.

Phyllis: Well, just being combative and angry, it’s– it’s not who I am. It’s not really who I am.

Christine: Could have fooled me.

Phyllis: Listen, um, I promised my kids that I would change. And when I made that promise, I meant it. I promised Danny. So here I am, making peace with you.

Christine: And here I am, not buying it. I have lived through way too many redemptions to believe for a second that this one’s for real.

Phyllis: Okay, well, I’m gonna take that as a challenge. I’m gonna– I’m gonna pull you over to Team Phyllis. Yeah, I’m gonna change your opinion of me.

Christine: Okay. So, I guess you’ll be wishing us a bon voyage.

Phyllis: Are you going somewhere?

Christine: Yeah, Danny and I are heading away this weekend. Just the two of us. Some great wine, a cabin with a fireplace. It was his idea. He planned the whole thing. You– you two are so close now. I– I thought that you would have known.

Summer: Chance, your new job can wait. You can’t be late for Sharon’s event. And I don’t even think that you have time to change anymore. You know what? It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing is not as important as you being there for her.

Chance: Whoa, slow down. I’m not going to the launch.

Summer: Why? Did you guys get into a fight or something? ‘Cause even if you did, you need to just put it aside because this is too important. You gotta be there for her.

Chance: We didn’t get in a fight.

Summer: Then why aren’t you going?

Chance: We broke up.

Nick: Mariah really killed it. But you know what I love most about this party? It’s drama-free.

Sharon: And to that end, thank you for being civil with Adam. It was a bit of a statement for him to bring Sally.

Nick: Oh, yeah. Adam is on top of the world right now. Back in Dad’s good graces and clearly, Sally’s too.

Sharon: And is it driving you nuts? And before you fudge your answer, yes, you were civil with Adam when he arrived, but there was a bit of an edge.

Nick: Yes. I don’t like seeing her with him because I know he’s going to do something to blow the whole thing up or hurt her and I don’t know, I guess I’m also relieved. Because a happy Adam might mean that he’s not gonna cause problems at the office for the next few weeks. You think I just jinxed it?

Jack: Is it presumptuous of me to assume that the two of you have found a way to work things out?

Adam: We are headed in the right direction.

Devon: All right. So tell me, how is Aria doing?

Mariah: Oh, she’s amazing. The hearing aids are working perfectly. And she gets this smile on her face every time we say her name. It just– Oh, it makes my heart melt.

Tessa: When I sing to her now, she responds.

Devon: Yeah?

Tessa: Yeah.

Devon: That’s gotta be such a special feeling for you both.

Mariah: It’s indescribable joy. How’s Dom doing?

Devon: He’s great. He couldn’t be better. He impresses me every day with something new he’s learned.

Abby: Hi. Is this the Proud Parents Club?

Tessa: Oh, I wanted to talk to you about the music classes you have Dominic in. We wanted to sign Aria up. Oh, looks like you weren’t as thrilled with the classes as you were.

Devon: Oh, no. I love the class. I think it’s a really good teacher.

Mariah: Uh, I am so sorry, guys, there are a few things that I have to take care of. One of which I need your help on. So, I’ll talk to you guys in a little bit. Sorry.

Abby: Yes. Go ahead and I’m gonna text you all the info on the music class.

Mariah: Yes, perfect.

Tessa: Oh, excellent. Thank you.

Abby: Your expression when they mentioned the music class. Did Tucker show up again?

Devon: No, he didn’t. He’s listened to what I told him and he’s staying away from me and Dominic.

Abby: Is that why you made that face? Because you’re disappointed?

Devon: No. Why would I be disappointed? He did exactly what I asked him to do.

Summer: I– I don’t understand. I thought you and Sharon were happy together.

Chance: We were, but uh, happy isn’t everything, huh?

Summer: What does that mean? Uh, look, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry. I just– I’m confused. You know, the last time I saw you together, you seemed good.

Chance: I agree.

Summer: She wasn’t upset that I went to the concert with you, was she?

Chance: No, no, no, no. It was nothing like that. No problems.

Summer: So, I mean, what was it? And look, you can tell me to mind my own business if you want.

Chance: No, it’s okay. I mean, it’s not a big secret or anything. We just realized we wanted different things at this point in our lives. Well, she realized it and she told me.

Summer: I’m sorry.

Chance: Yeah, me too. But you know what? She’s a smart woman and I think she might be right.

Summer: It’s not easy though, is it?

Chance: No, it’s not. We were having fun. It’s a shame to cut it short like that, but she knows her own heart better. And I think it’s best to take care of this now rather than later.

Summer: It still hurts though.

Chance: Yeah. I am sorry to miss the launch party. I wish her nothing but success. ladies and gentlemen. It is my pleasure to introduce the reason that we are all here tonight, my mother, Sharon Newman.

Sharon: Thank you. Thank you. And welcome everyone. Thank you so much for coming. Tonight is a very big night for me. And as I look around the room, I realize how much support I’ve had getting here. But there are two people I need to single out, Mariah Copeland for coming to work with me and for planning this amazing celebration. And Nick Newman, who is no longer working with me, but he helped me get to this point. I wouldn’t be here without him. I think everyone here knows how I came to own this company, but I won’t dwell on that. From dark places, light can shine. So, I am relaunching the company I inherited as a brand new venture. And with the mission to have a positive impact on the world. I’m pleased to announce that I will be donating half of all profits to causes that are very close to my heart and will uplift the community, namely raising awareness about underage alcohol abuse. It is a cause that my daughter, Faith, asked me to invest in. We will also be donating to Delia’s Foundation and to New Hope and the Abbott-Winters Foundation. As well as many other incredible charities. And we will not only be supporting these causes with our monetary donations, but they will all be receiving free software and technological support. Now, I promise to keep this short, but there was one more change I felt was important to announce tonight. Just to make this relaunch complete. This company needs a new name, free from its past history. One that connotes positivity, optimism, and making the world a better place. I give you… Cassidy First Technology.

Phyllis: Uh, no, I did not know about your trip. I did not know. Um, if Danny, uh, had told me I would have pointed him in a different direction for sure. I mean, cabins are so cold and drafty.

Christine: Oh, well, that’s what blankets are for, right? Ah, just to curl up in front of a cozy fire. I can’t wait. The two of us need to get away from all the distractions here and focus solely on one another.

Phyllis: Well, I am flattered that you consider me a distraction.

Christine: No, my definition of distraction is more off-putting.

Phyllis: Well, Danny doesn’t see me as off-putting. I guarantee you that.

Christine: See, right there, there it is. Proof that you haven’t changed, just trying to mark your territory, even when it isn’t yours to mark.

Phyllis: Well, you certainly haven’t changed, Christine. You’re still acting superior to everyone.

Christine: Present company, definitely. Thanks for the drink.

Phyllis: Hey, Danny. Listen, what are you doing right now?

Summer: What’s that smile for?

Chance: Oh, I was just thinking about you busting in here all worried. Thinking that I spaced on Sharon’s party. I bet you would have had a tux sent over here from Marchetti and demanded me to change in the bathroom if that was the case, huh?

Summer: Uh, don’t think that that wasn’t my next suggestion.

Chance: I knew it. I knew it.

Summer: No, I just know how hard it is to launch a business. And how much you really do need that support.

Chance: Yeah. Yeah, I know. I do feel bad not going, but we talked about it and it just didn’t seem right given the circumstances. What about you though? Why aren’t you there? You could’ve gone.

Summer: No, I had a deadline at work, so I just– I was stopping in here to get some fuel.

Chance: Oh, well, just like that, I’m reminded that I have years’ worth of annual reports to get to speed on.

Summer: Well, I will let you get back to that.

Chance: Well, thanks for looking out for me.

Summer: Yeah, that’s no problem. I will see you around.

Chance: See you.

Summer: You know, you can’t really work on an empty stomach, can you? What if I, um, bought you dinner?

Jack: Sharon, we knew you would do great things with this opportunity, but you have exceeded all expectations.

Devon: Yes. And we both want to thank you on behalf of the Abbott-Winters Foundation.

Billy: And thank you for your generosity towards the Delia Foundation. It’s incredible.

Sharon: Please, there’s no thanks necessary. I’ve realized at this point in my life that I want to give back. When this company dropped on my lap, it felt like an incredible burden at first. I couldn’t imagine being forced to manage a legacy from a man who ruined so many people’s lives. And then, I realized I could turn it around and do something honorable with it.

Billy: Well, I can promise you, we’ll put it to good use.

Devon: Yeah, you’ve made us all want to rise to the occasion.

Jack: Hear, hear.

Sharon: Jack, would you mind if I spoke with Billy and Devon alone for a moment?

Jack: Sure. Absolutely. Congratulations again.

Sharon: Thank you.

Devon: Jack.

Billy: What’s up?

Sharon: Okay, well, this is going to sound a little bit odd, but, um, I had a dream the other night and it just got me thinking about something that I wanna run by both of you.

Devon: Well, run it by us, please. We’re curious.

Sharon: Well, most of it was just– I don’t know, a crazy fever-like dream. But there was this one part where Cassidy first joined forces with Chancellor-Winters. You know, it’s not a bad idea for us to combine our technology and your content. It could be an unbeatable combination. Would you ever consider a partnership?

Billy: Well, I mean, I would love to hear more.

Devon: Yeah, we’re definitely intrigued.

Sharon: Okay, great. Um, well, we don’t need to rush into anything and of course, I am still going to be donating to your charities, even if we don’t partner up.

Devon: Well, thank you for saying. How about I have my assistant put something on the books for the three of us to have a meeting?

Sharon: That sounds great. All right. Well, um, enjoy the rest of the party.

Devon: Thank you.

Billy: Congrats, Sharon.

Sharon: Do you like it?

Nick: I mean, you could have given me a heads-up. I didn’t expect to get all misty-eyed at your cocktail party.

Sharon: I’ve been misty-eyed ever since Mariah first showed me that.

Nick: It’s perfect. The name, your whole mission. You’re building something special.

Sharon: I feel like Cassie’s been guiding me. She’s still a part of our lives, every day. Do you feel that too?

Nick: Of course. She would be so proud of you. And I have never been more in awe of you. Tonight, you triumphed.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

That’s some serious brooding you got going on there, Dad. Hey. Kristina. I know you weren’t expecting me, so if it’s a bad time, I can… No. You know I’m always so happy to see you. It’s never a bad time. Your timing’s always perfect.

Mr. Renault’s room is in 1002. Mm-hmm. Thank you.

Well, look what we have here. The Lord has blessed me with a beautiful visitor. Leave the Lord out of this, Mr. Renault. This is between you and me. Ava. I was hoping I would run into you. Could we talk for a minute? Yeah. Of course. What can I do for you? Drop the charges against Esme. And why would I do that? Adam! Adam, please! I really need to talk to you! Are you in there? You can stop knocking. Adam’s not here. He left a few minutes ago. I really need to see him. It’s important. Did he say where he was going? I’m not his keeper! He just stormed out of here with his guitar and my vodka. I got it. Um, thanks. Wh– Ava I’m sorry, Laura. I have no intention of dropping the charges. Esme deserves this. In fact, she deserves far worse after everything she did to hurt Trina. And that is a completely separate issue. Let her answer for those crimes when the time comes. [ Cellphone rings ] I’m so sorry. I-I really have to take this.

Hey. How are you holding up? I’d be a lot better if Spencer were here with Ace like he promised. Where is he? Father. Hello, Spencer.

You seem to be angry with me. Ya think? But why? I helped you to unburden your conscience. You lied about being a priest, you listened to my confession, you ruined my marriage, you destroyed my relationship with my daughter. What did you expect, Mr. Renault? A thank-you note?! It was all gonna come out eventually. All I did was help you hasten the inevitable. And don’t you feel better without all the crushing weight of guilt hanging over you? No, actually, I don’t. Did you feel better when you were sent to prison and punished for your crimes? You’re lashing out. I can understand. The truth hurts. But just give it time. Now the healing process can occur. So, what do I owe the honor of this visit? I actually don’t have a reason. I just wanted to come say hi. Oh, I know, but you’re so busy with everything going on, usually you can’t get away, you know, in the middle of the day. So is everything okay? Yeah. Everything’s on track with the surrogacy. I just wanted to, you know, check on you. Oh, so this isn’t just a drop-in. It’s a check — You’re checking up on me, huh? Dad, you’ve had a lot going on — everything with Nina and getting arrested and Bobbie Spencer’s funeral. I just — You know, I want to make sure you’re okay. That’s very thoughtful of you. I’m fine. Are you sure? Yeah. Yeah. You know, I mean… I’m your dad, so you got to listen to what I say. Okay, well, this whole support thing works both ways, you know? You’ve always been there for me, and I can tell when something’s up and you’re not okay, so this is exactly where I need to be right now.

[ Strumming ] Hi. Hi. I thought I’d find you here. Why? [ Slurring ] ‘Cause you know me so well? Think you can… read my mind? Okay. Look. Adam, I know you’re mad, but if you would just let me explain myself. It doesn’t matter. Y-You don’t need to… come up with some stupid excuse for narc’ing on me to our R.A. What’s done is done. I wasn’t narc’ing on you. Adam, I’m worried about you. I was just trying to get you some help. If you’re really my friend… [ String plucks ] …you’d see that I want to be alone. Go away. No. That’s not how this works. It’s because I’m your friend that I’m staying. Ava Trina! Hey! Hi! Oh, you look nice. Thanks. I didn’t know if you were gonna to be here today or not. Yeah. I take it that you leaving the hospital is a good sign? The best. So Curtis is okay? Yeah. He already woke up and is talking to us. So glad to hear it. We’re all so relieved, so we’re just waiting to see if the surgery will help him walk again. Of course. Yeah. Well, be sure to tell everybody in your family that I’m thinking of them, okay? I will. And, actually, I got to talk to my dad after his surgery, and he reminded me how important it is to focus on my future, so that’s exactly what I’m gonna do. I’m sure Ace and Spencer are on their way over right now, but I need you to focus on yourself right now, okay, hon? Is there anything I can get you? I’m fine. Thanks. Oh, Esme. Look. I — [ Sighs ] I know I’m the one who convinced you to confess. I-I even pushed you. And I completely understand that you would blame me for the trouble that you’re in right now. [ Sighs ] I-It’s fine, Laura. This is not on you. It is my fault. I am the one who has messed up yet again, and so I guess now all there is to do is pray for a miracle.

Maybe one can be arranged.

You look good, son. Thank you. I am. I’m glad. Is Ace here? Yeah. He’s asleep in his room. I understand you stepped up to take great care of your brother since I’ve been gone. Thank you. You don’t need to thank me for loving my little brother. I just meant that you could have let yourself get caught up in who his mother is and how he came to be… and just handed him off to your grandmother. But instead you’ve taken great care of him. You’ve been keeping tabs on us? I guess I deserve your surprise on that. I had to leave, Spencer. They would have put me in prison. And although it may seem like I never looked back, just because I wasn’t here doesn’t mean I stopped caring about you and Ace. I wasn’t — I wasn’t sure how you felt about me, given the way that we left things. I mean, after all, I did try to blackmail you into handing over custody of Ace. Yes, well, that was very Cassadine of you. [ Both chuckle ]

I did what I thought was best for my little brother. And I’ve thought so much about what I would say to you if I ever saw you again. “If”? Well, just given the way that we left things, I wasn’t so sure and…

I’ve played out so many different scenarios in my head — where it would be and how it would go. And after all this time, seeing you standing here in front of me… You realize how much you hate me. I don’t blame you. I know I failed you and Ace. I left you both. And I deserve everything you have coming for me. And I’m ready to take it. There’s only one thing that’s left to say. I’m sorry. ADA Lansing-Davis. Martin. Mayor Collins. May I help you? Well, that depends. I was hoping we could discuss a deal for my client. “We”? Oh, I meant you and me. Forgive me. No impropriety intended. Yes. I’m just here as a grandmother. Uh, my position as mayor should have no bearing on the conversation. Understood. With regard to the case, Martin, your client confessed to breaking and entering. It’s open-and-shut. But Esme took responsibility for her crimes. She turned herself in. Nobody was hurt. Now, there should be some leniency in a situation where a young woman has memory loss and made a mistake. You mind if I take it from here? [ Sighs ] Sorry.

Look. The law is clear. Ava Jerome has decided to press charges, and my office has a responsibility to pursue a conviction. Yeah, well, in that case, you should know I intend to advise my client to plead not guilty, which means eventually there’s gonna be a trial, means eventually she’s gonna take that stand, get to tell her whole horrible, sordid story, complete with waterworks, I’m sure. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but juries tend to be sympathetic to young women who have been held captive against their will. You sure you’re gonna get that conviction under those circumstances? Trina, that’s amazing news! Paris! And with Spencer? That’s so romantic, right? Long walks together along the Seine. Oh, visiting the Louvre together! Oh, candlelit dinners with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Oh, my gosh. You’re making me even more excited. I can’t believe that this is really happening! Yeah, and you deserve every second of it. You know, that’s exactly why I pressed charges against Esme. So you could see her brought to justice and finally close that chapter of your life! I don’t understand. You’re sorry? For what? Well, I assume that you know by now that Esme’s biological parents are Ryan Chamberlain and Heather Webber. I am aware, yes. It’s both shocking and, given her behavior, not surprising at all. Esme conspired with her psychotic father to tear our family apart. And I played right into her hands. And I’m sorry. It wasn’t your fault. They manipulated you, something they’re both very good at. But there were clues. Little things that didn’t quite make sense. And I think that I was just so blinded by, uh — I think I was so blinded by my need to get back at you that I couldn’t see that. I made it very easy for them. And I regret that. I appreciate your apology, but it’s not necessary. I bear responsibility for our failed relationship. I-I should have tried harder to make things better between us. Sure, Ryan and Esme may have been trying to destroy our relationship, but I’m the one who gave them an opening. See, I-I let Esme get in my head about my marriage. I slept with her. And I kept Esme prisoner at Wyndemere. Those were my choices, okay, even if Ryan and Esme were pulling the strings. You hurt me, no doubt. But I can see now that you hurt yourself just as much. Maybe more. And all I can do now is take responsibility for my actions, Spencer. Like abandoning your unborn son so that you can avoid going to prison? If you won’t leave, I will. Hey. Hey! Don’t touch me! I don’t want your help. This is exactly why I went to the R.A. Adam, you’re not okay. And I-I didn’t know what else to do. You’re just like my parents. You don’t… really care about me. You just want to make me someone else’s problem. Hey. That’s not why I did it. I’m worried about you. You need to get some help. Nothing matters. I’m miserable. All the time. You can’t change that. “Healing.” You think that’s what’s about to happen here? This is all about you getting back at Sonny. You saw an opportunity to use me to hurt Sonny, and you took it. You’re wrong. I have no quarrel with Sonny or with his family. I simply saw two children of God hurt by lies, and I wanted to ease their pain. By listening to my confession under false pretenses. It was the best way for you to begin your journey to a life of authenticity. I have no ill will toward you. And if your marriage is floundering, I’m sorry. Okay. Can you please, just please spare me these empty words? If you’re truly sorry, prove it. The fact that you’re willing to spend some time with your dad, I appreciate that. You got one of the biggest hearts that I know, and I’m very proud to be your father. So — But I’m fine. Okay. As long as you say so. But if and when you need me, just know that I’m there. You don’t have to worry about me. I’ve been through a lot, and, you know… it takes a lot to keep me down. It sure does. That is true. You’re one of the strongest people I have ever met. You’ve always been my rock, Dad, and to think of you going to prison for assaulting Cyrus… Killing Cyrus Renault takes care of the man, but it doesn’t necessarily get rid of the charges against you. The D.A. might even up the charges from assault to manslaughter, saying that Renault died as a result of his injuries. Nobody saw me at All Saints. There are no witnesses to testify against me. I want to send a message — nobody crosses Sonny Corinthos. But I’m concerned about you. There’s DNA. You weren’t wearing gloves. Your knuckles were proof. Do you trust me? Always. I’m not going to prison. Because I got — I have a family… who needs me. And I’m gonna do everything I can to make sure that I take care of all of you. [ Cellphone chimes ]

You look lost. Can I help you find where you’re supposed to be? Oh, uh, no. Thank you. I’m, uh, all good. You’re supposed to be wearing a badge. Who are you? You caught me. I’m a temp orderly, and it’s my first day. I must have left my badge in the locker room. I’m sorry. Well, I guess it’s okay just this one time, but you’re not supposed to be on your phone while you’re working, so please turn it off. Appreciate your help. You said that I needed to come clean with the people that I hurt in my life in order to move on. You also told me that it wasn’t enough for me to feel sorry for lying to them, that I had to back it up with action. Isn’t that right? I did say that. Well, it’s time to practice what you preach. If you are truly sorry, Mr. Renault… you need to make amends. I will admit that my apology may ring hollow to you without an accompanying act of contrition. Well, there is something that you can do. Hm? Drop the charges against Sonny. I’ve been through a lot worse, and I always survive. You know that, don’t you? Yeah. No. I know. Of course. And I believe in you, Dad. I do. I just — I’m worried about you, even if it’s just for selfish reasons. Oh. That’s what this is about. What’s going on? I am afraid that you’re not really gonna be here for me when I need you. I mean, I can’t imagine going through this entire surrogacy thing with Molly and TJ without you here. That’s not gonna happen, honey. You don’t know that. Because I’m gonna be right by your side the whole time. But you have to know that you’re strong enough to do it on your own. Yeah. I know. Thank you. It’s just crazy. There was a time where I just — I never would have had the courage to think of myself for Molly and TJ’s surrogacy. I would have just thought there was someone else, you know, someone better. Mm-hmm. I never would have thought I could do this. But you… You’ve helped me see that I’m capable of doing big, important, life-changing things. You’ve helped me find confidence in myself finally, Dad, and that’s because of you.

You pressed charges against Esme for me? Yeah, I did, but you don’t seem very happy about that. I’m not sure how I feel about it. Um… There’s a child involved. Ace is the innocent one in all of this, and I just — If Esme goes to prison, that little boy will be separated from his mother because of me. Well, Esme may be Ace’s mother, but she’s still the same conniving manipulator she’s always been. All I want is for you to get a fraction of the justice that you’re due after everything she put you through. Then you can move on with your life without the burden of Esme Prince. Bailiff All rise!

Bailiff Be seated! In the matter of the State of New York versus Esme Prince, how does the defendant plead? You’re right. I did abandon Ace. But he wasn’t the only son I walked out on. I’m used to… you disappearing by now. I want you to know that I — I regret it. All of it. I haven’t been a very good father to you, and I don’t expect you to forgive me for any of it. When I was away, I thought a lot about you… about us. When I learned you were my son and not Jax’s… I swore that I would be the best dad anyone has ever had, that you would have the most normal childhood I could give you… and that you’d always know how much I love you. But I failed at all of that. You can’t change the past. No, you can’t. No matter how much you want to. It wasn’t all bad, though, right? We had our moments. Some of my favorite memories are of you and I when you were very young.

You were my whole world. I loved you so much. I loved you, too. Still do. Fiercely. And no matter what else has happened between us, Spencer, I want you to know that’ll never change. [ Ace crying ]

Sounds like Ace is awake.

Can I meet him? You don’t know what it’s like to be me. So stop pretending that you do. It’s true, I don’t have the same problems as you. So maybe I’m not the best person to give you advice. But someone out there does understand, if you would just talk to them. I’m a disappointment to everyone. Hey. No, you’re not. Come on. Just come back to the dorms. You can get some sleep, and we’ll figure out your next step together. It’s not like it matters anymore. Hey, hey, Adam.

Oh, my God. Hey, Adam. Adam, you gotta wake up. Come on. Please. Um, my friend just passed out. He’s been drinking vodka. I think he took a bunch of pills. Um, uh, we’re in Rice Park in a — in an opening behind the great lawn. Hey, Adam. Okay, I’m going to put the phone down, but I’m going to stay on the line. Hey, Adam, you got to talk to me. Hey! Wake up! Adam, can you hear me? Adam! I wish I could help you, but I have no power over law enforcement. No, I don’t believe that, not for a second, Mr. Renault. You got Sonny into trouble. You can get him out of trouble. Isn’t one of the tenets of your religion to forgive others just as God forgives you? Well, yes, it is. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’m Sonny’s victim. He assaulted me. Why shouldn’t I seek justice? Because I can offer you something you want more. As much as I would love to take all the credit that you’ve become such an amazing woman, we have to give your mom a little bit of credit. Look, I know Mom supports me, Dad, of course, but… it’s just different than the support I get from you. You and your mom have a very complicated relationship. I don’t want to get in the middle of it, but never doubt how much she believes in you. Have you and Mom been talking about me? Well, of course. [ Both laugh ] But, you know, she always had misgivings about the situation. She didn’t know how complicated it was going to be, but it was always — It always came from love for you and Molly. She never doubted who you are or how much you’re helping your sister. No, I know. I know that now. It’s just — God. When she first came at me with all these questions about whether or not I knew what I was doing and getting myself into, it just totally took me back to all those times before where she would just underestimate me. you know, it was like she would wait on the sidelines for me to screw it up. You talk to her about it? No, there’s no point now. It’s different, you know? Well, yeah. I mean, it’s different because I’m different. I’m different now. I know who I am, and I know that I am capable of meeting big challenges in my life. You know, it’s kind of like how you are so much more, so much better than your reputation makes you seem. Am I? Yes, you are. People that don’t know you just assume you’re who they read about in the paper or what they see on the news. Yeah. They have no idea how generous and kind you are, and how you would do absolutely anything for the people that you love. And you have — Dad, you’ve always had this code of ethics, this unspoken code that you live by. And I feel like it almost got stronger from your time at Nixon Falls. I mean, of course, I used to attribute that to Nina, but I guess I was wrong there.

Ms. Prince, how do you plead? Guilty. Let the record reflect that the defendant has entered a guilty plea. Now, I understand that a deal was struck just before this hearing began. Correct, Your Honor. In exchange for the defendant’s guilty plea, the DA’s office is seeking six months probation with no jail time. What? Order. [ Gavel bangs ] This court does not tolerate outbursts. Counselors, would you approach the bench?

So, what the hell happened, Laura? I advocated for justice, and the rest is up to the judge.

[ Gasps ] Hey, you. Ace, this is your dad. So wonderful to finally meet you, son. Okay. Oh, hey. He — He’s so big. Yeah, well, he’s a year old now. Yeah, I guess he is.

He looks like you. Oh, you think so? I do. [ Chuckles ] He has our ears. [ Chuckles ]

And your grandmother’s nose.

Hey. Hey, Ace. Hello, there, buddy. [ Chuckles ] God, look at you.

There are things that have happened in Nixon Falls that continue to influence me. Nina wasn’t the only one. I liked Nina. Yeah. I really did. And I even forgave her for keeping you from us for so long. I mean, we were all so happy at the wedding. I thought — I mean, it felt like it was a fresh start. I thought it was. She was so vindictive, what she did with Carly and Drew. And let’s face it, she wasn’t after Drew. She was just trying to hurt Carly. And in the end, Nina didn’t get anything she wanted, and it cost her everything.

Fight me back! Come on!

So you want to suspend business until after your trial? Not gonna be a trial. That’s where you come in. You’re gonna take care of Cyrus for me. You’re gonna keep him from testifying? You want me to scare him? To death. Sometimes we’re all blinded by our own pain. Yeah, I know. I’m — I’m the queen of reactionary behavior, lashing out. That’s why I admire you so much. You know, Nina, she couldn’t see the right path. But you always have your eyes clear. You have something that I want, Cyrus. And I’m willing to give you anything that you ask for in return. As far as I remember, bargaining is still allowed in your religion, am I right?

Man does not live by bread alone. [ Chuckles ] Certainly not you. There may be some circumstances where a tithing is considered appropriate. Is this one of them?

Judge Thompson The court has heard from both attorneys and reviewed the facts in the case. I’m satisfied that the deal was made in good faith and in accordance with the law. Esme Prince, I sentence you to the recommended six months probation. [ Gavel bangs ] Court’s adjourned. Bailiff All rise.

What the hell was that? I understand you’re upset — You’re damn right I’m upset. I was the victim of a crime, you know. My house was broken into. My safety was — was put at risk. And now Esme Prince gets to ride off into the sunset with probation? T-This is a travesty of justice. Esme admitted to her crimes and has showed remorse for her actions. Nobody was injured during the crimes. It wasn’t in the city’s best interest to try a case for such a relatively minor charge. You may not like it, but justice was served today.

This isn’t over. Not by a long shot. A few hours ago, everything was hopeless, but somehow you were able to keep me out of prison. I can’t thank you enough. You should thank Laura. She’s the one who convinced me to approach Ms. Lansing-Davis with the deal. But make no mistake, young lady, you’re on probation now. You better be on your best behavior for the next six months. Otherwise, you will be looking at jail time. Understood. There’s no wiggle room here. You don’t so much as put a toe over the line.

He’s such a peaceful little guy. Yeah, I’m surprised. He usually doesn’t take to strangers this quickly. But I think he really likes you. Then I’m a very lucky man. [ Chuckles ] I’ve made so many bad decisions, so many wrong turns. But no matter what I’ve done wrong, I need you to know that you’re a part of me — the very best part — and always will be.

Father.

Stay.

Hey, I think he took these. I don’t know how many, but he washed them down with vodka. We’ll pass this on to the doctor. Is he going to be okay?

[ Line ringing ] This is Dex. Leave me a message. [ Beep ] I need you to call it off. Don’t do it.

How are you feeling? Much better than I expected. I really thought I’d be in jail tonight. Well, Ace and I both are very happy that you’re not. Thank you. I don’t know what kind of magic you were able to pull, but you saved me. [ Both laugh ] Well, it did get a little dicey there for a while, but I’m just glad that it all worked out in the end. Tell me something. Are you happy you did the right thing? I’m glad I listened to you. Good. Then listen to me on this other thing, too. Now that you know that you’ve been given probation, leave your past behind you and focus on your future. I will. Good. [ Cellphone chimes ] Oh. Duty calls. I’m afraid I have to run. I am just so glad that you get to go home tonight. Me, too. Okay. I’ll see you soon.

[ Sighs ]

Listen, I know that you’re in a lot of legal trouble right now because of keeping Esme prisoner. Elizabeth was able to cut a deal. Maybe you can, too. No, there were extenuating circumstances for Elizabeth. I was the mastermind of the whole thing. I doubt the justice system will treat the two of us the same way. Maybe not. But you do have the resources to retain Diane Miller, and she’s been keeping my Uncle Sonny out of prison for years. So I do think that it is at least worth a conversation. And, I don’t know, maybe she can argue that you did what you had to do so that you could protect Ace.

What?

You have no intention of staying in Port Charles, do you? I can’t. I should have known that you were just passing through. I deserve that. I do. But this time, it’s different. How so? Because this time, I’m taking my sons with me.

[Dramatic Music]

Hope: I read everything I could find about Emma’s accident and the police said that there were no witnesses. And you’re telling me that you were there? You saw Emma’s car go off the road and you said nothing.

Thomas: She was driving so fast.

Hope: You were following her!

Thomas: And we were both trying to get to you. To this day, I am still horrified about that night

Hope: All this time.

Thomas: I have been trying to get it out of my mind.

Hope: So what so many people suspected of you… you’re actually admitting is true? That you were on Mulholland the night that Emma died.

Steffy: I love how protective you are, but my brother isn’t the threat you think he is.

Finn: Look, I can’t just ignore what Xander told me. He seems sure.

Steffy: That doesn’t make it true, Finn.

Finn: So you’re just really not concerned that Thomas could be responsible for Emma’s death?

Steffy: No, because the police already looked into it. It was an accident, a terrible accident. Finn, listen to me. Dredging this all up, it isn’t helping. I know my brother has changed. He’s learned from his mistakes. Finn, I promise you, Thomas isn’t a danger to anyone. You need to believe me.

Finn: I hear you, all right? Thomas is your big brother. You’ve spent years looking up to him.

Steffy: In a way, his mistakes hurt me more than anyone.

Finn: Well, maybe he hurt someone else a lot more. Look– look, Steffy, I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry. I can see the stress that this is causing you.

Steffy: No, I understand that you have questions. I get that you’re concerned. Xander just shows up here. He’s a new patient and he starts spewing all these accusations against my brother. I get it.

Finn: But that’s just the thing. It wasn’t really like that. I mean, I had to pull the story out of him.

Steffy: It doesn’t make it true. There’s no proof of what Xander’s been saying.

Finn: I understand that, but it’s the way Xander reacted, okay? Just saying your brother’s name. It wasn’t like he was putting me on. He truly believes Thomas is– is dangerous.

Steffy: Well, he’s not. Xander is wrong. Don’t listen to him. Listen to me, your wife.

Thomas: I’m so ashamed. I wish I’d come forward sooner. I hated keeping this from you. I wanted to say something so many times and you were so proud of me. Encouraging and supportive. It terrified me this would set us back, make you question everything. And it doesn’t change anything, you know. It– Emma still died because of an accident. But holding it in and holding it back from you, not sharing everything with each other… Yes, I was on Mulholland that night. I was there. I saw Emma’s car go right off the road. All of that is true. But Xander is wrong, Hope. I’m not a murderer. You know me. You have to believe me.

Finn: Look, I want to believe you. I don’t want to believe that Thomas might be capable of murder.

Steffy: He is not. Xander and Emma were close. He was deeply affected by her death. So he wanted to point the finger at someone.

Finn: He told me Thomas threatened him.

Steffy: Thomas has done some very dark things in the past. You know that. And Thomas would be the first person to admit that, But hiding something as disgusting, as gruesome, like a crime? He wouldn’t do that. He’s worked so hard on himself. All this healing. He’s become a better father and Xander doesn’t know any of that because he hasn’t seen it. He’s basing this all on the man he used to be. And even at Thomas’s worst, he wouldn’t be homicidal.

Finn: He was desperate though. All he cared about was getting close to Hope. And if he thought Emma was gonna expose him, come between them? I’m just saying, I know how he is, Steffy. Even recently, when I told him that Hope and him should never be together.

Steffy: Was Thomas ever violent with you?

Finn: No.

Steffy: Did you ever feel as though, I don’t know, you were in danger?

Finn: No.

Steffy: Then what does that tell you? I don’t understand why you’re not trusting your instincts or trusting your wife. And I don’t know why you’re trying to open this wound. Yes, I am very protective and I will do anything to protect my family, but I’m not giving Thomas the benefit of the doubt because he is my brother. I’ve seen that he’s changed and I’m putting my faith in him just like you should put your faith in me.

Finn: Okay. Come here. Look, honey… Honey, I love you, okay? You and the kids are my entire world. And if… Look, if you need me to let this go, I– I– I will.

Steffy: So, you’ll drop it?

Finn: Well, if this is causing you this much stress? Yeah. Okay. I can let it go.

Steffy: Oh, my God.

Finn: Yeah.

Hope: Why are you telling me this now? Hm? Is it because Xander’s back? Thomas He started up. He got Finn involved, but I’m here because I want a life with you. And there can’t be any secrets between us.

Hope: Tell me again. How it happened. I need to hear you say it again.

Thomas: Emma and I argued at the office. What are you talking about? She demanded that I tell you about Beth. Take a breath.

Emma: I can’t calm down. I just overheard–

Thomas: I tried to reason with her. I tried to make her see what that would do to Steffy.

Emma: Shouldn’t Steffy know the truth?

Thomas: My sister loved that baby girl so much. I just needed more time, but she wouldn’t listen.

Emma: There’s nothing you cn do to stop me, out of my way.

Thomas: No.

Emma: Move, now!

Thomas: You’re not going anywhere. She was gonna find you. She was gonna tell you everything and I tried to stop her. But she jumped in her car and she tore off. I thought I could get her to pull over. She was just driving so fast. She must have been, I don’t know, trying to call you or– or– or text you or something. I– I honked, I tried to get her to slow down, but she just went faster. And then I saw her head go down. She must have been reaching for something. And that’s when she lost control. She missed the turn, crashed through the guardrail. Where she went over, no one would have survived. I still have nightmares about it. I– I hear swerving and the brakes. And then not being able to do anything. I’m haunted by it. But I did not run her off the road. Hope, I swear to you. I was there, but I didn’t kill Emma.

Steffy: Look, I know you’re just trying to do the right thing.

Finn: Well, the right thing is for us to stay unified.

Steffy: Yeah. But it is okay if we disagree and we have different opinions.

Finn: Well, you’re my wife and Thomas is your brother. I respect that.

Steffy: I just wish you two could get along.

Finn: Look, I want to get back to that.

Steffy: Yeah, but if you have doubts about Thomas Or you’re troubled by what Xander said, then I don’t know where to go from there.

Finn: Look, what I need to remember and what I can’t forget is how much I love you and how much I missed you and the kids when you were gone. All those nights, I would lay awake just wishing that you would come home. I promised myself that I would never let anything come between us again. So, if you don’t want me to pursue this, I won’t.

Steffy: Well I’m really happy to hear that. We just have so many things going on. Everything we’ve been through. Sheila, our time apart, my grandfather, and now Hope and Thomas are in a relationship.

Finn: Look, there’s been enough turmoil. You’re right. The last thing we need is to go looking for more.

Steffy: Especially when everything’s finally starting to turn around.

Finn: I agree. All I want is a loving, supporting, peaceful family. Your brother included.

Steffy: Okay.

Thomas: When I think back, it’s like I’m remembering someone else. A stranger who did all those misguided things. He did it because he loved you in a messed up way and he wanted to spend his life with you. But I’ve done a since then, thanks to you. Your understanding, your support. I’ve changed my ways completely. When I look back, it’s like I see that man clearly, his selfishness and obsession, but that doesn’t exist anymore and he’s never coming back. Now, did I lie? Did I withhold the truth? I handled that night and pretty much everything at that time all wrong? Yes. I should have told you what happened with Beth. But I was so caught up in my own fear. And I don’t want any more secrets between us. Never again. I don’t want us to ever have to think about that night again. Emma is gone and that is the real tragedy. But can’t we just focus on our own life and our future together?

Hope: I, uh… I have to think about this.

Thomas: Nothing has to change.

Hope: You chased Emma, Thomas. You were on Mulholland that night. You saw her go off the road. She was my friend. She died trying to get to me. Trying to tell me the truth about my daughter, about Beth. Do I believe you’re telling the truth, Thomas? Yes. I do believe you.

Thomas: Thank you.

Steffy: You really would do anything for me.

Finn: No question.

Steffy: How did I get so lucky?

Finn: It’s never been luck for us. It’s loyalty, commitment, trust.

Steffy: Passion?

Finn: We got plenty of that.

Steffy: I think we could use a little more.

Finn: Oh, is that a complaint?

Steffy: No, it’s a proposition.

Finn: I know. What do you have in mind?

Steffy: We can get someone to watch the kids and I’m gonna keep you in bed until the sun comes up.

Finn: Well, my schedule just completely freed up.

Steffy: I am so grateful for you. I really am.

Thomas: I’m sorry, Hope. I hate bringing up these terrible memories. They’re painful for me too. I didn’t want Emma to die. I tried to stop her. You’re disappointed in me. I am too. I did love you then, but it was a messed up flawed kind of love. I was confused. But what I feel for you today is way different. It’s pure and it’s healthy.

Hope: Thomas… We can talk about that another time.

Thomas: Look, I’m not asking you to accept the person I was, but please believe in who I am now. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you, Hope I just want to put that horrible night behind us. I promise I am committed to being the upstanding man that you deserve. Someone you can truly love. You’ve changed me from the man who did all of those terrible things years ago to someone that maybe you’re capable of loving, who’s capable of honoring you and loving you. I wanna be a good father. I wanna be a good husband someday. The best designer for your line and the right man for you. No more secrets, Hope. I told you everything. I swear it’s the truth. And if you can’t forgive me, just tell me you believe that I’m a different man now. A better man, better than I was before. Tell me you know I’ve changed. It may have taken me a really long time to mature and find confidence, but I have. To find true love. It’s all because of you. It’s not obsession, not like it was. I swear. I just love you. I love you so much. I want the world to recognize who we are today and what we can be, moving forward. I want to prove how good I can be. Now, and every single day in the future. You’re wearing that engagement ring around your necklace. That ring represents who I am today and the life that I want to share with you, forever. Please don’t give up on me. Don’t give up on us.

Transcript provided by Thane and Suzanne

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

Oh, now, that’s a sight for sore eyes, all the citizens out beautifying the town.

Yeah, all the people out there that are just really inspired by your podcast, Paulina.

Reminding us all that Martin Luther King Day is a day of service and that good deeds are nourishment for the soul.

Mm, and I do believe that.

[laughs] And those delicious pastries that you brought along for the volunteers, my darling, oh, those are nourishment for the soul.

[laughs] Even if not all that nutritious. Well, you–you didn’t sneak one of those to Abraham, did you?

No, of course not.

Mm-hmm. OK, fine, fine. Just give me one of those bear claws.

Hey, I’ve got some free coffees for anybody volunteering today, courtesy of my Grandpa Roman. Would you like a coffee?

Well, in that case, oh.

There you go.

Thank you.

OK. Thank you very much.

Here you are, sir. Yes. And one for you.

Thank you. I could use something to keep me warm. I’m freezing.

I can help with that too.

Mm, yeah, that’s more like it.

I’m just happy to be of service.

[tender music]

Hey, Thomas, catch.

Ooh.

Nice job, buddy.

Yeah, that kid’s got a future in– sorry, what’s that– what’s that sport where you– you catch the ball in the… meshy thing on the edge of a stick?

Lacrosse?

Yeah.

Talking about lacrosse?

Lacrosse. Yeah.

Yeah? Don’t know much about sports, do you, huh?

No, no, I played tennis. Played tennis.

[clicks tongue]

Wow, OK, very nice. Yeah, I bet you’re as sharp with that racket as you are with that broom. I think Charlotte’s picked up more trash than you, and she’s in preschool.

No, I’m just– I’m multitasking. I–I was keeping… in touch with the latest news updates.

[dramatic music] Sorry. But yeah…

You OK?

I’m not so much of a sports guy, more of a… Cerebral guy. Yeah, I’m OK.

You OK? You sure?

Yeah.

Mm, so how about you just keep your arms around me all day and you can be my personal portable space heater?

Well, I wish that I could. But I’ve got to get back and keep pouring coffees.

OK, well, then I’ll come with you.

OK.

Oh, OK, lovebirds, get back to work.

OK.

All right. Mama, knock ’em dead on your podcast. It’s gonna be your best one ever.

Mm-hmm, no pressure.

[laughs] Hey, Nicole.

Oh.

Hey, Abe.

How are you?

Paulina.

Oh, honey, oh, we haven’t stopped thinking about you and Holly. Nicole, how is she doing?

Well, the doctors are running some tests on her. That’s why I’m here, ’cause they kicked me out of the ICU.

Well, what kind of tests are they running?

Well, they’re seeing if she qualifies to be moved to a facility in Italy.

[gasps] Italy?

Yeah, they–they worked miracles on EJ there and brought him back from the brink of death, as he said. So we’re hoping they can do the same for Holly.

Well, well, well, fancy meeting you here.

Do not mess with me, Leo. I’m operating on two hours of sleep.

Still, I’m sure you have enough energy to compliment me for sticking to my budget.

[scoffs] Your budget? Is that why you’ve asked me for cash three times in the past three days?

And you said no three times, which was very disappointing. Ergo, I have had to cleave to my weekly allowance like some pitiful child.

Oh, well, keep cleaving, because if you drain my bank account, well, then you will have zero allowance, and you and I will both be going to bed with an empty stomach.

Oh, no, not me. See, I get my paycheck today from “The Spectator.” Admittedly not much more than a pittance but enough to keep me in cheap wine and trail mix if your crying poor mouth isn’t another of your egregious lies and you do, in fact, go down the financial tubes. Ugh. But on a happier note, rejoice, Salem. Lady Whistleblower is making her grand return.

[gasps] Oh, and wait, Sloan, dear, until you read my first scintillating comeback column.

[breathes deeply] It is going to blow your mind.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

You OK?

Yeah, I’m– I just– I’m good. It’s just, since the coma, I sometimes get these dizzy spells.

[dramatic music]

OK, well, you want me to get you a water or something?

No, actually…

[sighs] I just need something to eat, like a– a protein bar or something.

All right. OK, we can get you something. Thomas, Charlotte, come on, we got to go.

Thanks.

Here.

Thanks. I’m good. I’m good. I’m good.

So you would be going along with Holly to Italy, yes?

Yes, if she qualifies for the treatment, that is the plan. You know, and I wish that both EJ and I could go, but we decided, for Holly’s sake, that he should stay here and help bring down those drug traffickers who are profiting on our children’s suffering.

Mm-hmm, oh, and I pray that we are able to do that, Nicole. Nothing is more important to me.

Nicole, we are praying for Holly’s recovery. And I want you to know that Paulina and I, we’re here for you, whatever you need.

Thank you, Abe, Paulina. That means so much to me.

[sighs]

Jada, I am so sorry that that happened to you.

I knew it. I knew that security guard was following me up and down the aisles. So I should have expected that after I checked out that the store owner and that security dirtbag was gonna pull me aside and demand to search my purse.

Why didn’t you just tell them you were a cop?

I did. But I left my badge in my jacket in my car. And so I said, let me go get it.

Yeah.

And the store owner gets up in my face and says, you’re not going anywhere.

Oh, my God. Honey, I’m sorry. Well, it’s a good thing the unis showed up and they recognized you, right?

Yeah.

Yeah.

You and me both.

[sighs] They called the damn cops on me, Rafe. They said I nicked a brand-new lip gloss that I had in my purse I bought two days ago. Ugh, I was just– I was shaking. I’m just so–I’m so furious, I could just–

[sighs] I’m sorry. I try to let these things just roll off my back.

Hey, what are you sorry about, hmm?

Because I’m a Black woman, Rafe. I’m not allowed to get angry.

[sighs]

So your mom seemed in pretty good spirits today. I didn’t want to ask.

Yeah, well, there’s nothing to report yet. The doctors called, and she has an appointment tomorrow. But–

Right.

And they’re supposed to go over the biopsy results and everything.

OK.

But I’m thinking–

What?

Well, if it was good news, then they would have told her over the phone, right?

No, no, not necessarily. I mean, that could just be the way they do things, you know?

Yeah, yeah, maybe.

[sighs] It’s just that this whole testing thing has been dragged on for so long. And Mama’s being all stoic and brave. And me, I’m just, you know, pumping her up, telling her everything’s gonna be OK. But it’s all an act because I don’t want her to know how scared I really am.

Hey, hey, hey, hey.

[light music] You don’t have to act around me, OK? If you’re scared, you can tell me.

OK, but you just promise you won’t tell anyone, OK?

[chuckles] Right.

I need everyone to think that I am stoic and brave like Mama.

Well, I won’t tell anybody, OK? Everyone else can see your hard candy shell. And I’ll be the only one who knows that you have a soft, squishy center. And I love you for it.

[dramatic music]

Why is your column gonna blow my mind, Leo? What is it about?

[laughs] Why would I give that away?

You wouldn’t dare.

Blow your baby switch scheme out of the water? No. Well, not yet. But keep in mind, you did promise to pamper me in a manner to which I was becoming very accustomed. And so far, honey, your service is getting, like, / stars from me on Yelp. And if it gets any worse, I will write a scathingly rotten review and maybe even mention in said review how you have royally screwed over other people, including your baby’s real mother. Ta-ta.

You wouldn’t dare. We had a deal. Leo, you gave me your word.

Gave you his word about what?

[sighs]

[dramatic music]

You sure you’re feeling all right?

I’m fine, fit for duty.

OK, good. Well, Julie took the kids home. So if you wanted to have that ad hoc editorial meeting, we can.

Yeah.

You up for it?

Mm-hmm. Let’s do it.

OK, I assume you have someone covering the mayor’s live podcast?

Yes, with special instructions to keep an eye out for any possible health concerns.

Yeah, but just go easy, OK? It could be a cold. We don’t want to blow anything out of proportion.

Just keeping an eye out.

What an honor this is to remind the listeners of the true meaning of Martin Luther King Day.

[laughs] Oh, not just a day off to sleep in and just sit around and do nothing. No, this day means so much more than that. I just hope my voice holds up. Hmm. Hoo.

[light music]

[sighs] You know, I really should get back to the station.

Jada, you’ve had a rough morning. It’s OK. You are allowed to stop for a meal. Plus, you should have taken today off. It’s a holiday.

I always volunteer on this holiday. It’s my way of honoring Dr. King and what he stood for, service to others. I mean, I am so happy that I get to do what I do, in great part, thanks to him. I mean, could you imagine back in Dr. King’s day, a woman of color being a detective for a metropolitan police force?

Probably not that likely.

Would have been impossible.

Yeah.

Couple menus for you guys.

Oh.

All right.

You’re working here now?

No, I’m just helping out. My Grandpa Roman’s a little short-staffed now that Tate’s, you know…

Yeah.

Not around.

Right, yeah. Well, I’m sure he appreciates the help.

Yeah, and hey, if you’re feeling like you need warmed up, we’ve got some hot biscuits in the back. We’ve got–we’ve got an egg and tomato wrap if you need an energy boost.

Well, I’ve had the morning from hell. So what would you recommend for that?

Well, here’s the last of my doughnuts if you could use a treat.

Ooh, you have no idea.

[sighs]

So have you talked to your brothers about any possible DiMera involvement in this drug ring the PD is trying to crack? Let’s just not get ahead of ourselves, yeah, the mayor’s health, the DiMera scandal, et cetera.

Ha, greetings, gentlemen. Where is the confetti? Where are the streamers and the banners celebrating the return of Lady Whistleblower?

Where’s the cape?

Hello, Leo.

I loved the cape.

Sorry, what cape?

You call yourself a newsman? My cape was the fashion-forward splash of the Bistro’s New Year’s Eve party.

Oh, good. Well, you know what? I would actually really love to read Lady Whistleblower’s splashy first column of the year, considering it’s two days late.

OK, OK, here.

[dramatic music] Never fear. I just sent it to you both. And trust me, it is well worth the wait.

Leo was my client. We had worked out a payment plan on word. He’s not gonna be able to abide by the terms. Not that it’s any of your business.

Yeah, OK. I’m sorry, I get that it was none of my business. It’s just, you looked really upset.

Upset? Why would I be upset? I’ve got a wonderful husband and precious little baby boy who’s keeping me up all through the night with his crazy sleep schedule, but it’s totally worth it.

Well, I’m glad Jude’s doing well.

Any change with Holly?

No, but if things go the way we hope, in a few days, she will be getting treatment at a world-renowned hospital in Italy.

Well, Eric didn’t mention that to me.

It’s because I didn’t tell him.

Are you going with her?

Sloan, I’m her mother. Of course I’m going with her.

Oh, that’s wonderful.

[dramatic music]

Well, what do you think? What do you think? I mean, not that I’m desperate for a compliment and/or accolades and/or kudos and/or praise. Actually, I am.

What I think is… this is damn impressive, Leo.

[gasps] Chadwick.

I agree. It’s the last thing I expected to read from Lady Whistleblower. You were right, Leo. It was worth the wait.

[gasps]

You’re glad I’m leaving town?

No, that’s–what I meant was that I’m glad Holly’s receiving treatment, because Eric and I have been praying every day for her recovery.

Well, thank you. I didn’t see you as the praying type.

Well, I mean, I wasn’t in the past, but… pregnancy, the miscarriage, and now… having our prayers answered with this beautiful baby boy, all that changed me. It made me more religious.

Right. Well, I can see how it would. So I take it Jude is with Eric?

Yeah, he is. I’m just out picking up a few things. We’re having Eric’s mom and stepfather over for dinner tonight, which we have been trying to do for a while. But I’ve kind of been putting it off.

Yeah, yeah, well, you’ve been a little busy.

Yeah, it’s more than that. Truth is, I’m a little intimidated by his mother. She’s just– she’s so perfect, you know?

I get it. Marlena was my mother-in-law too. But may I suggest that you pour yourself a large glass of wine before they get there, because if you start the night out wired, it’s only gonna go downhill from there.

You know, you don’t have to do this today if you’re not feeling up to it. You can have the deputy mayor step in.

Today of all days, I am doing this. Mm-mm, my mother marched with Dr. King as a young woman, and I wouldn’t be here today without her…

Yeah.

Or him. So the least I can do is just push on through for one morning. And that is what I’m going to do. OK.

[coughs]

[light music]

You know, some people might say that Dr. King would want me to shrug off what happened to me today and just push forward. But I don’t think that’s what he meant at all. I think that when you see injustice that you need to do something.

Amen.

Man, I feel for Jada. Getting profiled as a shoplifter, that kind of stuff really shakes you up.

Anything like that ever happen to you?

Are you kidding? Just the other day, I was walking in the square, and this lady, she was sitting on a bench by herself, and she had her purse next to her. She sees me walking, and she takes her purse and she puts it on her lap.

[scoffs] Wow.

You’re not really shocked.

I mean, yeah, I kind of am. I feel like I’ve spent a lot of time with you, and I’ve just never seen it.

Yeah, that’s because you weren’t looking. But it happened everywhere– here, in London, in Italy.

Italy?

Yeah. You remember how people were looking at us because we were an interracial couple? When Mama was a kid, it would have been illegal for us to get married in many places in this country.

[sighs] Well… I’m sure as hell glad that we’re not back there.

Yeah. We’ve come a long way. But we can’t pretend like we don’t still have a long way to go.

A big glass of wine, check. Actually, I bought two bottles. So check and check.

Yeah, well, as you know, Eric doesn’t drink. And his parents will probably only have a glass, so…

More for me.

[sighs] Look, Marlena knows that she comes off as intimidating, you know? And she also seems very put together. But she’s just–she’s a real human with real problems. I mean, you know Marlena’s daughter Sami, Eric’s twin? I mean, she was a holy terror for years. She still is, in my opinion.

Yeah, Eric’s mentioned Sami once or twice.

Well, did he also mention that Marlena had an affair with John and it sent Sami off the deep end when she was a teenager?

Mm-mm. I can’t even imagine Marlena having an affair.

Yeah, well, you see? She’s not perfect, just like the rest of us.

[soft music] And I’ve found that if you ask Marlena for advice up front, you know, she feels useful, and you don’t feel judged, and then the rest of the night will just be smooth sailing.

Thank you, Nicole. That’s really good advice.

This is an amazing piece. You are a writer, my friend.

Oh, well, you know, it is my passion. And I really think I’ve improved since I joined the Masters of Sex Club.

Pardon?

Oh, that’s a slip of the tongue. It’s the Masters of Texts Cslub. It’s an online writing workshop, of which I am the star pupil, I might add.

I have to admit– I’m embarrassed to admit it, but there’s so much in here that I had no idea about. I mean, how have I never heard of this guy Bayard Rustin? I mean, he helped organize the March on Washington. An openly gay African American man in the s? I mean, this person is just incredibly brave, especially for that time.

Yeah, he was a true hero. And the reason you’ve never heard of him is that back then, a lot of people didn’t want to link together civil rights and gay rights and any other kind of equal rights as being a part of the same movement. And sadly, that’s still the case today. As if there’s only so much equality to go around.

Yeah. Well, I am really impressed that you’ve done the research, Leo, and brought all of this to light. In fact, I think, given the serious nature of the column, we should publish this under your own name and not the Lady Whistleblower byline.

Assuming we can publish it at all.

[dramatic music] * *

[sighs] Check, one, two, three.

[coughs] This is Mayor Paulina Price. Check, check. More. Can–bring it up more.

Paulina, did you make your follow-up appointment with the doctor?

Well, I’ll go see her when the biopsy test results come back.

And when will that be?

[sighs] Well… I’m going in to get the results tomorrow.

And you didn’t tell me that because?

I didn’t want you to feel obligated to go there with me.

Do you not want me to go with you?

I didn’t want to ask you.

Well, you didn’t ask. I offered.

I want you to be there with me.

Then I shall be.

I remember when I was a kid and Mama was self-employed and then Daddy got sick and so he lost his job and so we lost our health insurance. And so I always wonder, like, if maybe he would have made it if–

I had no idea.

Yeah, it’s really a systemic thing, ’cause when you think about it, there’s just so many people of color that are living at poverty, so I just– I feel really lucky to be who I am and where I am.

Hey, Chanel…

[light music] I’m the lucky one here.

I remember a few years back, I was in line at the store, waiting to check out, and there was this guy in front of me. And he hands the clerk his check, clerk bags his groceries, and then he’s on his way. I’m up next. I hand the clerk my check, right?

You write checks?

Well, I did then, you know. I’m slow to evolve, OK? So anyway, the clerk looks at my check, sees the name Hernandez on it…

Mm-hmm.

Asks for my driver’s license and another form of ID and then asks me to put my phone number on it.

I can relate. But at least your hair isn’t a whole thing. Mm. Chanel?

Hey, what’s up?

Thank you so much for the delicious doughnuts.

You’re welcome.

Random question, but have you ever had someone ask if they could touch your hair?

Oh, my God, are you kidding me? The first time, it was in a mall. It was a total stranger, and I was, like, three. And Mama was not happy about it, to put it mildly.

Oh, my God. Here, join us.

Sure.

Sit down.

Yeah. Look, I know I probably shouldn’t ask this about your hair, but I mean, why– Ah.

[laughter] No, I’m–I’m an idiot. I’m sorry. All right.

No, no, it’s OK. I mean, being willing to ask these questions and have these conversations, it’s the first step in overcoming biases. Not to sound patronizing, but that kind of sounded patronizing, didn’t it?

No, no, it didn’t sound patronizing, because it’s– it’s true.

You know, I was just thinking, back when I was in high school, I was in the lunchroom, and this random girl, without even asking if she could touch my hair, she just comes up and starts touching my hair.

Oh, no.

And she’s like, oh, it’s so soft. And then when I went home, I told my mom about it. And then she gave me this whole lecture about microaggressions and how I should have stood up for myself. I mean, I was just trying to eat my lunch. And now I’ve worked up an appetite. I want to order the full breakfast menu.

Well, there you go. You heard the lady.

All right. Got it.

My kind of girl.

Got it.

[laughter] OK.

Get to work.

Yeah.

Well, thanks again for all the suggestions you’ve given me about how to handle Eric’s mother. That is–I know you’ve got a lot more important things to be worried about right now.

[dramatic music]

It was nice to get out of the hospital for a while, but… I should be getting back, so… Sloan, you know… you and I have a lot in common. And in another lifetime, maybe we would have been friends.

You mean if it weren’t for Eric.

I know Eric’s been spending a lot of time at the hospital with me and Holly, and I’m sure that hasn’t been easy for you, given our history. But I– I just want you to know that I appreciate how generous you’ve been about it.

I haven’t been that generous, Nicole.

You’re not gonna publish my piece? Why, because it’s too moving, too relevant?

Listen, I’m not saying that we’re not gonna publish it at all. I’m just–I’m saying that I think that we should think about it a little bit. I mean, “The Spectator” is not exactly on the cutting edge of social progressivism. Everett, what do you think?

I think that it’s our job to present a fair and balanced presentation of the news.

Whoa, are you saying that if you publish a pro-equality editorial on MLK Day, you have to publish an anti-equality one the following?

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all. Leo, I want to publish your piece. I think it’s terrific.

And so do I. I’m just saying there could be fallout.

Screw the fallout.

What he wrote is right and true and enlightening. Isn’t that more important than the bottom line?

Damn right it is.

Yes, it is. All right, we’re gonna publish your excellent piece, Leo. And if we get heat for it, then you know what? Hell with it. They can come for me.

[clapping]

Ah, you guys! You are my heroes. Come on. Bring it in. Group hug.

Hey, hey.

Group hug. Get over here.

[laughs] Get in there.

Oh, yeah, there it goes.

[laughter]

But I’m happy to say that both Johnny’s family and my family are very supportive of our relationship, so there are no speed bumps there.

Lucky you…

Mm-hmm.

‘Cause when I first got engaged to my first husband, I wanted so badly for my dad to approve, because my mom sure didn’t. Yeah, she wasn’t exactly thrilled that I was marrying a white Jewish guy.

Hmm. Well, she got over it, I hope.

Sort of. But he disappeared on me, so it was all moot.

Well, you know, Chanel and I were just watching this documentary recently about the Lovings. She was Black. He was white. And so the state of Virginia refused to recognize their marriage. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which struck down all state laws banning interracial marriage, allowing us to marry whoever we wanted.

Mm, not whoever we wanted because not same-sex marriages. And, you know, being a Black woman who’s also bi, I just stopped labeling myself altogether, because it’s just exhausting being so many types of other.

Hmm.

Right. But choosing to not acknowledge race or gender, I mean, that’s pretty exhausting too, right?

Yeah.

I mean, especially if that’s who you are.

[sighs]

You know, I can’t believe that we’ve never talked about this before.

Yeah, well, I’m really glad that we’re talking about it now.

[light music]

So do you want me to stay for the podcast, or should I just leave it to you?

Well, I certainly hope you didn’t come all the way over here just to be my sound man. Of course I want you to be here. And I can’t thank you enough for all your support, dear husband.

Well, you were there for me during all the months of my recovery. Want to be here for you.

All right, moment of truth. OK, here I go. Take me live.

[dramatic music] Hello, everyone. What a lovely morning it is. This is Mayor Paulina Price speaking to you on this Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

[chuckles] And I want to thank those of you who’ve already come out to serve your community this morning and to encourage those who haven’t to spend your afternoon volunteering.

[chuckles] You have the power and responsibility to improve your community in some way, big or small. May we continue to live in Dr. King’s spirit every day. Now, we’re– oh, a lot of us, we’re familiar with many of his words. So I’ve chosen to begin with a quote from that great writer James Baldwin.

[coughs] Not everything that is faced…

[voice breaking] Can be changed–

[softly] Can be changed.

But nothing…

Nothing… both: Can be changed until it is faced.

[dramatic music]

What do you mean you haven’t been generous? And not only have you been understanding about Eric spending time with me and Holly. Oh, my God, I mean, Sloan, you– you let me off the hook when I kidnapped your son.

Yeah, very reluctantly, believe me, especially whenever the next day–

The next day what?

You know, right after I told you to stay away from Jude, I saw you having lunch with Eric and Holly, looking like the happy family you used to be, all for the world to see. And, you know, that was pretty upsetting to me.

Would be for me too. But what did Eric say when you mentioned it to him?

I didn’t tell him. I don’t know why I didn’t tell him. But now I’m glad that he had that time with Holly.

[sniffles] He’ll always love her… just like he’ll always love you. And I’ll just have to learn to live with that. I should follow up with Leo. Thank you again, Nicole, for the advice.

Sloan, Sloan–

[sighs]

OK, that’s it. We did it. Good work, guys.

You guys, you are the best.

Well, I think it’s gonna be fantastic for the paper.

Well, you have made both Lady Whistleblower and me very, very happy, you two handsome devils, you. I truly am forever indebted to you for your gutsiness and your support.

Working with someone who you’ve had a… conflict with in the past, finding a way to have common ground and move forward, I’d say that’s in the right spirit for MLK Day.

It sure is, Chadwick. Speaking of, can I have the rest of the day off, pretty please with artificial sweetener on top since I’m trying to cut back on sugar?

Mm, journalists don’t really get days off, Leo.

You sure about that? Mr. Xander of Cooksville seems to.

Yeah, he’s teleworking today.

Mm.

Or is he pretending to be teleworking while he’s playing house with Sarah and their little snuggle bunny, leaving this venerable Salem institution, aka “The Spectator,” in the hands of we three cisgender males.

A topic for another column, perhaps.

I will get on that forthwith.

No, not forthwith. You are gonna get the break you asked for, and you are gonna leave the office. Salem City Park, National Day of Service, my friend.

Oh, right. Yeah, that’s actually why I wanted the rest of the day off… to do this.

Figured.

See ya.

Oh, don’t forget this.

Writers.

Mmm, well, that really hit the spot.

Well, then write us a good review, huh?

Definitely.

OK.

And thanks for hanging out with us. It was great catching up.

Yeah, it was. And since we’re baring our souls this morning, Rafe, I don’t know if I ever told you this, but I– I idolized you as a kid.

Yep, actually, you have said that.

Oh, good.

But it never gets old.

Yeah, it was probably pretty obvious at the time anyway. You know, I– I always kind of thought I’d end up being FBI like you.

Nah, nah, you were always a storyteller growing up. Filmmaker suits you.

It does, but not out-of-work filmmaker, you know?

Mm-hmm.

I mean, volunteering here this morning was the most useful I’ve felt in a long time. I’m thinking maybe it’s time to consider a new career path. I want to do something that means something, you know, that matters.

Well, what matters is in the eye of the beholder. Like, for instance, people may think that owning a bakery doesn’t matter. But I like to think of it as, I help people celebrate life. Like, sometimes I create them special cakes and things like that that makes them feel special. Like the other day, there was this lady, and she was in hospice, and she had been a beekeeper, and so I made her these little bumblebee cookies. And when she saw them, she was so excited. And the look on her face, it was just like, she was so happy. She was so grateful.

Wow.

Aw.

Yeah, and then even with my mom, you know, she’s all about giving back, and she’s the mayor, but then she also does this podcast. And she’s actually recording an episode this morning. I can’t wait to hear it when I get home.

Oh, she’s broadcasting live, isn’t she? Let’s listen to it.

Yeah.

Oh.

Yeah.

Mm. Oh. I want to thank my special guest, former mayor Abraham Carver, for that assist.

[chuckles] Equality and inclusion should not be controversial. Diversity in creed, background, abilities, beliefs is what makes us a great city and a great nation. In the end, we all want the same things: health, prosperity, safety for our family and our friends and ourselves. We should not shun people who disagree with us. Instead, we must love, learn, open our hearts and minds, and, most importantly, continue to do the hard work to make this world a better place for everyone to live in. And our words are all the more powerful when we raise our voices together.

To Dr. King.

To the future.

To my Mama.

To us.

Ashley: Yes, I do. Absolutely. We both know you do. You have seen him without his mask.

Audra: Has anyone really ever seen tucker completely open and honest? And wouldn’t that be your territory?

Ashley: That should be. Maybe you know him better than anyone.

*******************

Jordan: Then what the hell are you doing here?

Claire: I’m here because I came to tell you face to face. I’ve seen who you really are. You are… the monster who haunts my nightmares.

Jordan: No. I love you.

Claire: No. That wasn’t love. I don’t know what love is, but I know that it’s not lying to someone their entire life, making them believe terrible things. I could have been happy and good. I could have had a family.

Jordan: I know I’ve made mistakes. But maybe– maybe we can help each other.

Claire: This is the last time we’re ever going to see each other.

Jordan: No, don’t say that. You want this place to kill me?

Claire: No. I want you to live a long painful life. Maybe there’s someone in here behind these bars that can make you feel as small and worthless as you made me feel. And I hope– I hope they crush your hopes every day and that at night you dream of escaping, but there’s nowhere for you to go. This is your life now and forever.

Jordan: Honey.

Claire: Guard!

Jordan: No. No, no, no. Look at me. Look at me. Look at me. Come on. Talk time, like we used to, okay?

Claire: We’re finished here.

Jordan: You and me, we’re finished when I say we’re finished and not before. I have plans. Just wait. And now I have all the time in the world. And you… you…you, little girl, you chose the wrong side. The wrong side!

Adam: Well, if I may, I’d like to propose a toast to my spectacular date and our amazing day for the both of us. Italy’s finest sparkling water. You said alcohol was the tipping point to bad behavior, so I’m just honoring your wishes.

Sally: Wow, you really do think of everything.

Adam: May I?

Sally: Please.

Adam: And, if I may be so bold… to us.

Adam: Just like old times.

Sally: The pasta?

Adam: You eating off my plate.

Sally: Is there a problem?

Adam: I mean, we did have the same dish.
