Yeah, I, uh, just got back. I saw Tate leaving as I was coming in. He looked pretty upset.

Yeah, we sort of got in a fight.

Well, the fact that he had the nerve to make a move on me while my mom’s missing. Can you believe that?

Yeah, that does sound a little inappropriate. What do you mean your mom is missing?

Well, your dad was on the phone with her when the line suddenly went dead. He thinks she might have been in an accident.

I don’t understand, EJ. Dimitri was supposed to bring our baby to the hospital. Where are they?

I– I don’t know. I’ve spoken with several people on the staff, ,::, security personnel. No one’s seen Dimitri or our baby.

Well, have you called the police?

I have, yes. I’ve spoken with an officer. They’re putting out an APB.

An APB? What? Then why isn’t this building beeping like crazy with an AMBER Alert? EJ! Our baby is being held by a psychotic criminal! My God! God only knows what Dimitri has planned.

[sighs]

So the baby we were going to adopt was born tonight?

Isn’t that exciting? I was surprised myself, but yes.

I just can’t believe it’s happening so soon.

[baby whimpers]

No, Doctor, you’re here because you put the Hippocratic oath on the back burner in favor of a buck. And I am counting on an encore performance.

Did you get ahold of your lawyer?

Actually, my brilliant legal team is being assembled as we speak. But until then, do you happen to have a copy “of Police Officer Weekly,” “Meter Maid Digest”? I don’t know, something to peruse?

Mm, afraid not. But I hope that you have assembled a brilliant legal team. In fact, I hope it’s the best in the Lower , because you are going to need it. You’re in some serious trouble, boy. Yeah. What is that, aiding and abetting a fugitive? Not to mention assaulting a police officer.

Hey, I already told you, I did not touch a hair on your girlfriend’s head.

Oh, that’s right. That’s– yeah, of course. Your boyfriend did it. You know, honestly, it’s hard to keep track of who did what to whom. But, uh, I’ll tell you one thing. It’d be a real shame if you went down for Dimitri’s crimes. Because if you’re convicted– and trust me, you will be– you’re going to be spending a hell of a long time in Statesville.

Leo Stark was just arrested. If there is anyone who has the slightest inkling as to Dimitri’s whereabouts, it’s that garrulous little court jester.

And so once I remembered that my mom and I shared our locations, I told Eric, and then he like took off like a bat out of hell. And then your dad came back, and I told him about the locations, and he, like, also darted out of here.

You haven’t heard from either of them since this happened?

No, not yet. But maybe I should try calling one of them. Oh, damn, I somehow missed a text from Eric.

OK, what’d he say?

Oh, my God. Your dad was right. My mom really was in an accident. And she had the baby.

Whoa, whoa, what? Is she OK? Is the baby OK?

I don’t– I don’t know. It just says your dad took her to the hospital.

All right, OK. Let’s go. We need to get over there right now.

So did Melinda tell you how the birth went?

Yes, she did. She said everything went smoothly, that the baby is healthy. Little on the small side, but nothing to be worried about.

[tense music]

I just realized that our baby and Nicole’s baby were both born on the same day.

Oh, my God. What? Nicole gave birth?

Yeah, that’s what I was going to tell you when I got home.

Oh, wow. I’m– I’m so happy for them. That’s wonderful news. They must be over the moon about that.

Well, they would be, but Nicole, she– she got into a car accident with Dimitri Von– Leo Stark and–

Oh, my God. Is Nicole OK? Is the baby OK?

Nicole was injured. And Dimitri, he took the baby to the hospital. EJ and Nicole, they should be with the baby right now.

This is EJ DiMera’s baby?

And Nicole’s.

Correct on both counts.

But why in God’s name do you have the kid?

My boyfriend and I got into an accident with Nicole.

Oh, God.

Oh, my God. Is she OK?

I don’t know. She was conscious when I left, but barely. After the crash, she went into labor, we helped her deliver, and then I promised I’d get this little guy to a doctor.

So then why didn’t you go directly to the hospital?

I did. The place was crawling with cops. I couldn’t risk them recognizing who I am.

And so you came here instead? Why? Well, it sounds like everything worked out in the end.

I’ll have you know, Ms. Trask, that the only reason I agreed to stop by here tonight was because you told me Ms. Peterson needed my help. God knows I owe her one. I had no idea I was being summoned here under false pretenses to do something unethical.

Well, do you need help climbing down from your high horse? Because you don’t seem like a very seasoned jockey.

This feels like a trap.

Look, Dr. Pierce, I am no longer the DA, which means I am no longer interested in making sure that you spend the rest of your adult life behind bars and-or in an ankle bracelet. Ms. Peterson and I, we need a favor, one that requires coloring outside the lines just a teeny bit.

And why exactly would I do this?

Because you love money, don’t you? And we’re willing to make a sizable donation to a bank account of your choosing.

Ms. Trask, I’m afraid you completely misjudged my character. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have plans to go home and binge watch “Law & Order SVU.”

I suppose Mariska Hargitay can wait.

[baby whimpering]

He’s a little underweight, but very healthy for a preemie. Boy is a fighter.

The trauma of it all caused Nicole to go into premature labor, where she gave birth to our son.

Whom an impromptu midwife– yours truly, it so happens– helped deliver, thank you very much. Mazel tov, by the way.

Dimitri left Nicole at the crash site with our baby, supposedly to take him to the hospital, only neither he, nor the baby, ever appeared.

Wait, wait. What?

Don’t you dare act like you didn’t know this! You two bumbling, scheming dirtbags probably devised this entire plot yourselves!

No, no, really. EJ, there was no plot!

Then where is my son? Why hasn’t Dimitri returned him?

[tense music]

Honestly, I don’t know. But Dimitri would never do anything like that. He wouldn’t kidnap a tiny baby! I swear this has got to be a misunderstanding!

[breathing heavily] If you don’t tell me where Dimitri is right now, I promise you, Leo on everything I hold dear, you will live to regret this.

I– I don’t understand. Why would Dimitri not bring the baby to the hospital?

I’m not sure. I mean, your father and I think that maybe he’s using the baby as leverage to get out of his legal troubles?

Oh, my God. That’s so evil. How could he use an innocent baby like that?

I swear to God, if he touches one little hair on my baby brother’s head, I’ll kill him.

And I’ll dig the bastard’s grave. But seriously, Mom, what can we do to help?

Um, I don’t know. Maybe one of you can text EJ and see if there’s an update? I would do it myself, but my phone didn’t survive the accident.

Oh, Mom, I can’t believe you gave birth on the side of the road. You must have been so scared.

It’s all a blur, really, but your baby brother, he– he came out fighting. He’s a survivor.

But it’s so incredibly cruel, that– this couple, these parents, they’ll be devastated.

I know. And believe me, I don’t feel great about it, either. But look at the bright side. You’ll be making another couple very, very happy.

I swear to you, I don’t know where Dimitri is.

Then what is his game, huh? Is he using my son as a bargaining chip? Is he holding him for ransom?

No, no, no. It’s neither of those things.

All right, EJ. Why don’t you let me handle this?

With all due respect, Commissioner, this is my son we’re talking about here. And I’m the DA. I have every right to question the swine.

Did he mention anything about Nicole’s baby? Because he was supposed to take him to the hospital, but Mr. Frontier Justice out there says they never showed.

Sorry, no, he never mentioned anything about Nicole’s baby.

Did you hear that, kiddo? That crooked, yet first-rate doctor said that you are in tip-top shape. Oh, Sloan– I mean, your new mommy– is going to be so pleased. Oh.

[chuckles] You know, I– I meant what I said earlier to Dr. Pierce. I do feel kind of bad what we’re doing to Nicole. But here’s what I learned over the years, that sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the benefit of the child. I had to do that for my own little girl. Her name was Haley.

[sobs] I had to give her to my parents to raise, and it was the hardest thing I’d ever had to do. Broke my heart. But I did it, because I knew that’s what was best for her. And I know that this is what’s best for you. Ahh. Eric and Sloan are good people. And they’re going to be amazing parents.

[tense music]

Well, at first I was skeptical, because Melinda Trask, she was helping us arrange the adoption. But she’s really come through.

Oh, I’m so happy. You’ve wanted this for so long, and it’s finally going to work out this time.

Yes, it is. You know, I just– I just hope things work out for Nicole, too.

Nicole? Why do you say that?

So did you talk to Leo? Did he tell you where Dimitri took the baby?

Leo swears up and down he doesn’t know. And I have to say, he did seem rather perplexed as to why Dimitri didn’t show up here. But whether or not he’s telling the truth, he’s of no use to us. He’s lawyered up now.

What? So now what? What are we going to do?

Well, Rafe was supposedly on the case, but that man couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag. So I’m just going to have to find our son myself. And I’m not going to stop until I find him.

I’m coming with you.

Excuse me. Are you Nicole DiMera?

A pleasure to meet you. I’m Dr. Pierce. I’m here because I have news about your baby.

I’m the boy’s father. Do you know where he is?

Earlier tonight, a man arrived at the hospital with a baby in his arms, a newborn. He said it belonged to Nicole DiMera.

Oh, my God. Well, then I guess Dimitri did do the right thing after all.

I– this doesn’t make sense. I was there. I asked if a baby had been brought in and they said no.

I’m sorry, there must have been some confusion. Word never got back to me.

OK, so– so where is he? Where is my son? Are they bringing him up to us?

Perhaps we should talk more privately?

It’s fine, Doctor. Everybody here is family.

Look, just tell me what’s going on, please? I know that my baby was born prematurely, but are you saying– he’s OK, isn’t he?

I’m sorry, Mrs. DiMera. Your son didn’t make it.

[scoffs]

Well, I completely understand. And I apologize for the delay, but I was just wondering if maybe you could hold the submarine for just– I see. It’s now or never. OK, well, then I will head to the docks. Dr. Rolf, please do not leave without me.

[phone beeps] Goodbye, Leo. I love you.

So Dimitri left town? He’s gone?

I believe so.

Well, that’s– that’s a relief.

So, look, Leo. It’s too late tonight to get you arraigned, but I am going to do my best to get you out of this predicament.

Sorry, just one sec. Hey, I can’t talk long; I’m in a meeting with a client.

I just wanted to let you know that Dr. Pierce agreed to help us.

Uh-huh. And, um, actually, he’s delivering the very upsetting news to Mommy and Daddy as we speak.

[machines beeping]

No. No, no. That’s not possible. My baby was perfectly fine when Dimitri left with him. He was fine. I– I saw him.

I understand that there was a car accident, which caused you to go into labor? Well, it appears the infant sustained internal injuries during the crash.

No.

He was, uh–

Oh.

He was wrapped in this blanket.

[sobbing] Oh.

[somber music] Oh, God. I– I bought him this blanket. This is the blanket that Dimitri wrapped him in. Oh, God. This can’t be happening.

[sobbing]

I understand you have a lot to process. I’ll give you some privacy. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

[sobbing]

Again, I’m– I’m– terribly sorry for your loss.

[sobbing]

Dad, I’m so sorry. Is there– is there anything I can do?

Yeah, I just– you know, I really hope the worst is behind her.

[phone rings] It’s Holly. Holly, hey. How’s your mom and the baby?

[somber music] What? Oh, my God. I’m– Holly, I’m– I’m so sorry.

Eric, what happened?

The doctor has to be wrong, EJ. He is wrong. He’s wrong. I was just telling Holly how strong our son is, that he’s a fighter.

And he was, I’m sure.

No. Do not say “was.” Do not say “was.” Do not use the past tense. Oh. It can’t be true, EJ, it can’t. It’s not. It’s just– how can it end this way? How can it end this way? How? I mean, after everything that we’ve been through to keep this baby healthy. I mean, I– I took all the vitamins. I took all the medication. I never missed– I never missed one dose. I– I took care of myself because I knew how risky this pregnancy was. I don’t understand.

I know. You were so good.

EJ, you and I, we’ve lost two babies. Two babies before they were born, but not this one. He made it. And it would just be so unfair if he– oh, God! Ahh!

[sobbing] No! Oh, our baby, EJ. Our baby.

Dimitri? And he’s the one worried about missing Rolf’s yellow submarine. Dimitri, where are you?

I’d like to know that too. You know, all the rest should be this easy.

Detective Hunter, what a lovely surprise.

I bet. You know, I was just on my way to go search for you and your partner in crime, but lucky me, you saved me the trouble by loitering right by the hospital. ,::,

[sighs] I was so hoping my mom’s car would be out there when we got back and I’d help her unpack it and she’d be on my case about homework.

And maybe it would be different if I had a kid, but I don’t. I don’t have a kid to give him. I don’t and I never will.

I know what I need to do and I’m gonna do it now. I’m gonna find Eric and I’m gonna tell him the truth.

So right now, I am focused on the son of a bitch who thinks that he can get away with this. And when I do find Von Leuschner, he’s gonna wish that he was never born.

That too. And even though it doesn’t get me my CEO position back, it was exceedingly gratifying, separating our bastard brother from his homicidal wife.

Yeah, I don’t mean to burden you with all this, but I don’t have anybody else I can vent to. It’s about this editor-in-chief job. I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

I mean, I know I’m still getting my bearings, but it really seems like “The Spectator” is in huge, huge trouble.

Oh, you mean that Sloan and Eric are going to have a baby, too, assuming the adoption process goes smoothly.

You know, but I think that it was just his passive-aggressive way of trying to push me aside, stake his claim.

And how did Stephanie react?

She was quiet. I have no idea what she was thinking. But before I introduced myself, I saw them in the park, and they were hugging. And then the night before, he stopped by the apartment. That was the first time that they had talked, and she conveniently forgot to tell me about that part.

And that isn’t like her, I take it?

No, not at all. I think she’s stepping back from our relationship.

And you think this other guy could potentially step in?

I don’t know what to think, EJ.

Well, I can tell you what I think.

But he also made it clear that we had to come to a decision quickly, and he’s waiting for my call. But, look, if you want, I will tell him that you don’t want to do it. But you should also know that you and Eric might have to wait a very long time before you get another chance like this– a chance to be loving parents to a beautiful baby boy.

Wow, I can’t believe Melinda found you a baby so fast. I mean, I heard adoption can be really complicated and sometimes take years.

Yeah, it does. Well, we feel very fortunate. How are you? I mean, how are you feeling?

Oh, I– I’d say I feel fortunate, but that doesn’t even cover it. I mean, after everything that I’ve been through, the disappointments and the heartbreaks and now with my baby being due just a few weeks away, I feel– I feel beyond fortunate. I feel like this is a miracle, actually.

Yeah, it really is. So do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl?

No, EJ and I want to be surprised.

Yeah. Yeah, I did, because it was a little tough for me to hear you were about to become EJ’s wife. So– so I thought it was time for me to do something bold and just–and get married.

Listen, Nicole, we’ve done the whole “pretend we don’t have feelings for each other” for a long time. But the truth is, we’ll always have feelings for each other.

Well, even though you cannot see your amazingly beautiful face, you can still see your gorgeous, brown, almond eyes.

And the sheer panic in yours.

Just got it here. So on the knife, Gabi’s prints were found on it, of course, as expected.

Now, in order to convict you, EJ’s gonna need proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And since you didn’t kill Li Shin, there’s no proof that you did.

[suspenseful music] Hey. The Salem PD, and let me remind you, that includes your brother, they will find who really killed Li Shin.

Someone else’s prints are on the knife?

Well, according to the report, there’s a positive print consistent with a hand larger than the one belonging to Gabriella DiMera. Oh.

It’s Li Shin.

Well, that jives with Wendy Shin’s statement that the weapon was one of their kitchen knives. She’d seen him earlier that evening when she came home from work and found him cooking dinner.

They didn’t find any other prints?

No–other than the ones that Wendy gave us to rule her out, none.

Well, it’s not looking good for Gabi.

I am plotzing over how juicy this Gabi story is. Get this– the woman double-crosses her gorgeous ex-husband and then murders him? Ah. This could have been Lady Whistleblower’s moment to pivot into that esteemed Truman Capote territory. Imagine me, martini in hand, yukking it up with the Park Avenue intelligentsia, the toast of the town. Oh, but alas, she is forced to watch from the sidelines, derelict in her duty.

All because of me.

If I hadn’t tried to fix the Gabi-Stefan problem, we would never be in this mess, and I am still so very sorry, Leo.

I know you are. But listen to me, Butch Cassidy, I will always be your Sundance Kid. And lucky for you, the universe did your bidding for you. Think about it: Gabi DiMera is facing God knows how many years in prison, her crestfallen beau, Stefan, blowing kisses to her through a jammed packed courthouse? What fate could be worse than that?

Uh, I don’t know, Leo. Look around–we’re fugitives holed up in this dingy motel room with cold water dribbling out of a shower head and a TV that only plays one infomercial, some sad woman hawking some cut-rate medallion. I swear, if we don’t get in touch with my mother and fast, I fear that this may very well become the days of our lives.

Okay, first off, that infomercial lady is a gay icon waiting to be discovered. And secondly– Hold the phone. Let’s not say au revoir to our Parisian vacay just yet.

Did you hear that, you hunky little doomsayer? Rolf is in Salem. We’re saved. No more playing amateur chemist/barista with this swill.

Darling, as much as I would love to upgrade us to a frothy cappuccino at a bijou café, I’m not quite sure that this news necessarily translates to a one-way ticket out of here.

What are you talking about? It says right here, Rolf was in Salem yesterday.

Yes, exactly. hours ago. Let’s not forget that Rolf is a wanted man, so unless he’s just wandering the corridors of some underground laboratory with a shrunken head, I’d say it’s safe to say that he’s already gone.

Because I’m prosecuting? Believe me, Belle, I am just trying to save you the blood, sweat, and tears of investing in this total waste of time. Because of the mountains of evidence stacked against Gabi, there’s no jury in their right mind who would vote not guilty. And of course, regardless of evidence, as a servant of the people of Salem, I will prosecute any defendant to the fullest extent of the law.

Wow, well, thank you for that very lawyerly sermon, but I’m not actually here to discuss your professional duties.

Oh, then why are you here? Unless you’ve heard about my recent nuptials? Did you bring me a gift?

Rafe’s a good man, but he does love his sister, and he’s going to do everything he can to try to clear her, even though from where I’m standing, from where anyone’s standing, she looks mighty guilty.

All right, look, just because there was no evidence found on the murder weapon doesn’t mean that evidence doesn’t exist out there. I mean, the killer had to have left something behind, be it shoe prints, security camera footage, something. I mean, you guys are working on that, right?

Yeah, we’re working on that right now.

I know. I know that you are. But the evidence is not gonna matter, not as long as EJ is the one that’s prosecuting me. Now that this opportunity fell onto his lap, he’s gonna do everything he can to make this into a show trial to punish me for what we did to him.

Okay, Gabi, yes, EJ is hell-bent on revenge, and that is why we cannot give up. Now, Belle seems to believe that we can use EJ’s personal vendetta against him. We can make a very strong case for a conflict of interest, which will result in the charges being dropped and the case dismissed.

[apprehensive music] That’s why she didn’t come with me this morning. She’s talking to EJ right now.

Do you think I’m prosecuting Gabi out of some personal animus?

Oh, I don’t just think it. You see, I just had a conversation with Stefan and Gabi, and they let me know that they are now in possession of all of your DiMera shares, and I know you didn’t like that. And so now you’re using your new professional position as DA to exact revenge on them, which also makes a mockery of our judicial system. And you know what, EJ, that really pisses me off.

Belle. Belle, you wound me. Mayor Price offered me the DA’s office long before I had any inkling that Gabi had been arrested. And if you’re so convinced that I’m engaged in some kind of witch hunt, how do you explain the rather compelling evidence against her?

What evidence?

Must I enumerate it? The victim’s sister discovered Gabi standing over him holding onto a knife covered in his blood. Not to mention, two eyewitnesses overheard Gabi and her husband…

Discussing destroying said evidence.

I would think it’s enough if it wasn’t completely circumstantial and totally refutable.

Because my client told me when she found Li Shin, he had already been stabbed, and she actually took that knife right out of him in an effort to save his life.

Oh, maybe next time Gabi so casually wanders in on a murder victim, she ought to call the police right away, because from both a medical and legal standpoint, that– that was a big mistake.

Well, either way, it’s hardly a smoking gun.

You know, EJ, you may be smug as hell and imperious, but you’re no idiot, and I know that. And we both know that you don’t have enough evidence for a murder conviction, so if you have any interest in not making a complete embarrassment of yourself with your very first case, I would suggest you drop the charges right now.

You know, Dimitri, your mother was very disappointed when you lost the inheritance promised in the von Leuschner codicil. After she took a rather sudden leave from Salem, she comforted herself with the knowledge that she would be set up for life, said it would be easy for her. She was counting on you, her beloved son, to claim that fortune, only to see you bungled the entire operation by falling in love.

So does that mean you won’t be helping us?

As I said, your mother was none too happy when you lost your claim to the von Leuschner fortune. It was, after all, a pretty penny. And yet, despite her crushing disappointment, you are her son. And as such, she is, of course, willing to help you.

Mrs. DiMera was seen by two witnesses standing over her mortally wounded ex-husband’s body with a bloody knife. Those two witnesses also heard her say that she needed to get rid of the bloody knife. On top of that, Mr. Shin identified Gabi as his killer right before he died. So even a rookie like me knows that I have more than enough probable cause to make an arrest.

Well, then you’ll be arresting an innocent woman because I didn’t kill Li Shin.

But the truly dangerous ones, the ones that need to be locked up for the citizens of Salem to feel safe, well, you bungled every chance you had.

That is a gross misrepresentation.

Oh, you–you talk a big game. But actually, all you did as DA was a whole lot of nothing. Case in point: that high profile conviction that I just mentioned, you went on and on about how you were gonna nail Li Shin, how you were gonna get him to confess to– to trying to have Stefan DiMera killed.

I would have! But he bugged my office!

Oh, in other words, he played you, w-which proves my point. You got this whole tough, take-no-prisoners act down. But that’s all it is, blusters and empty promises. Bottom line, you failed to hand me Li Shin, even though you swore that you had him dead to rights.

[intriguing music]

Ooh. I think what you mean, Madam Mayor, is that you haven’t found anyone as capable, qualified, and as cutthroat as I am. And clearly, the ADA that is currently doing my old job on an interim basis isn’t cutting it. Otherwise, you would have made her permanent by now.

And why is that your business?

You are not my boss anymore. In fact, you technically work for me. And as a citizen of Salem, I am very concerned with how this city is being run.

She never stopped messing with him– his head, his heart. She tortured my brother, and all he ever wanted to do was love her.

You want to know who he loved? You. Wendy, he was so proud of you, how smart you are, how talented and independent you are. He saw what an amazing future you had ahead of you, and he’d hate it if you throw it away by going after Gabi.

Li did not deserve this. He did not deserve to die.

[soft dramatic music] I’m gonna track down that psycho and make her pay for what she did.

I–I understand wanting revenge, Wendy. I do. I’ve been there, OK? And I wish to hell I hadn’t given in to that impulse. OK, I still deeply regret going after Kayla because I thought she killed my mom–

Whenever I did something stupid, which was, like, all the time, Li would step in and take the blame. Oh, my God, I have to call my father. Tripp, how am I going to do this? How am I going to tell him that his son is dead?

I’m–I’m gonna help however I can, OK? You–have him–have him come over to our place. I’ll give you room to talk, to grieve.

My father doesn’t grieve. I’ve never even seen him cry.

We told Harris what we know. OK? They’re gonna do their investigation.

But what–what do they need to investigate? Gabi practically confessed. I–I–you saw her. She was standing over Li with that knife and said she needed to get rid of it.

And we got there, and so she couldn’t. OK, now the police, they have the murder weapon and our testimony, and plus, your brother named Gabi right before he died.

Wh-what, s-so what, I’m just supposed to sit around and wait for Rafe to put his own sister away?

[spluttering] Like that’s gonna happen.

Wendy, I promise you, the cops will do their job. OK, they’re going to get justice for Li.

Hey. Where’s your partner?

He caught a case, actually, while I got stuck transferring a prisoner to Statesville– a homicide.

Oh, who was it?

Li Shin.

Stabbed to death at his sister’s apartment.

You and Gabi are exactly alike, a pair of power-hungry predators who screwed my brother– literally– to get what you wanted.

You didn’t what, Melinda? What, what, you–you don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, then let me jog your memory. You used sex to try to get a confession out of my brother, which made me sick to hear about and makes me even sicker now.

Li, he played me as much as I played him.

I liked him too. And I swear, Wendy, whatever happened between us, I would never wish this on him.

I didn’t do anything.

Gabi, I can’t help you if you don’t tell me the truth.

I was just briefed by Detective Michaels.

So Li sent me a text asking me to come over to his sister’s apartment. And when I got there, the door was open, he was lying on the floor, and he had been stabbed.

With this knife?

Yes.

Detective Michaels told me that Wendy Shin and Tripp Johnson saw you standing over Li’s body, holding this knife, saying to Stefan that you needed to get rid of it. Why were you holding the knife?

Because I pulled it out of Li’s back. I was trying to save him.

[sighs] OK. So now your fingerprints are all over the murder weapon.

I know, I know. I realize how stupid it was. But I–in the moment, I panicked.

Harris also told me that Li named you as his killer before he died. Why would he do that?

I don’t know. I don’t– maybe he was c-confused, d-delusional. All I know is that there must have been somebody else in that apartment. A-and whoever that was stabbed Li.

Did you see anyone exit?

They must have left right before I got there. Please, please, Rafe, you have to believe me. Please.

I believe you.

Gabi, you were accused of murder.

This is a very serious crime. I mean, all the evidence points to you. Honestly, this–this looks bad, really bad.

Well, he always wanted me to come over to see him. He was obsessed with me.

Gabi, why did he want you to come over tonight?

[soft dramatic music]

So you and Stefan enlisted Wilhelm Rolf, a fugitive wanted by this department, to convince Li that you’d been kidnapped by Megan DiMera?

Look, the plan was to get Li on tape confessing that he was trying to get Stefan killed.

Yeah, so you could use that tape and get his shares?

Yes, and–and he did sign over the shares to us. But then he texted me a few hours later saying that those shares were fake and that if I wanted the real ones I had to come over to talk to him alone.

Hm.

And then, when I got there– I told you what I saw. That is it. That’s the whole story.

So you created this whole scheme, this whole thing, just so you could screw over EJ DiMera?

All right, let’s hear it. What job have you come to offer me?

Ah, well, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I fired that snake Clint Rawlings. His position is available for your consideration.

You’re available, qualified. You’d be doing important work.

I won’t deny trying to manipulate Li for my own ends. But I had genuine feelings for him. And I am terribly sorry that he’s gone.

Well, you have them. Not only am I sorry that you lost your brother, but I am sorry that I let my ambitions blind me from what could have been between us. I put my professional goals before my personal desires, and I truly regret that.

Yeah. EJ wanted Stefan out of the office, but Li wanted Stefan dead. He tried to pull the plug. He tried to have him assassinated by Harris Michaels. He got what he deserved.

OK, this almost sounds like you’re justifying his murder.

No, I didn’t mean that he deserved to die. I meant that he deserved to lose his shares.

And you came up with an insane scheme to make that happen. Damn it, I told you to stay away from him.

Well, maybe I would have if he was in prison. But, no, he was out free, and he owned a piece of my husband’s company.

Right, so you did the sensible thing, which was to invent a kidnapping.

Well, I–I wouldn’t have done that if you would have done your job. You know, you didn’t get the confession out of Li, so I did what I had to do–

For his murder? You’re–I–you think– you think that he would go this far to punish me?

You just said that he was obsessed with you. His obsession already had made him do crazy things. The guy–the guy was lonely. He was unstable. He was unemployed. And then when you and Stefan, you took those shares from him, I mean, maybe his whole life was just built on trying to get you back, and then when you did that to him, you humiliated him.

So he had somebody stab him in the back so that he could frame me?

In his sick mind, maybe it was poetic justice. You had taken everything from him–everything– except the ability for him to exact revenge.

So–so what, the– the final move in his life i-is gonna be to make sure that I am in prison for the rest of my life? You think a jury’s gonna buy that?

Well, not without proof.

So go find it.

I am going to try my best. But you need to prepare yourself for the possibility that that might not happen. I believe you, Gabi. I believe you are innocent. But as it stands now, it is gonna take a miracle to convince anyone else of that.

The evidence against me is pretty damning.

Because Li sent me a text message saying that all the stock certificates he signed over to us were fake, that if I wanted the real ones, I needed to come here and talk to him alone.

[sighs] He lied to you, Gabi. They were real. They were authenticated in the shareholders’ meeting.

[sighs] I used those shares to fire EJ, Gabi, and as soon as the meeting was over, I rushed over here, and I… I knew things were gonna be bad, but I did not realize they would be this bad. Why did you do it? Why did you kill Li?

[suspenseful music]

So I had just mailed a letter to Stephanie. We were old-school, and we used to write each other real letters. Um, anyway, I was crossing the street, and a car ran right into me.

He spent a year in a medically induced coma.

And when I came out of it, I-I was just total wreck. Um, took me forever to recover, both physically and mentally. Um, my memory was really spotty.

By the time he remembered me and tried to reach out, I had already moved to Salem, and he didn’t have my address.

Tracking you down was really not easy, but I–I had to try. I mean, I couldn’t let her think that I just left without any explanation, you know?

Mm-hmm. So then you came to Salem to tell her what really happened?

Yeah, yeah. And honestly… I was foolish enough to think that we could just pick up where we left off.

Hmm.

[uneasy music]

Sounds like the two of you were arguing.

Uh, you know what, it’s my fault. You know, sometimes I just get a little too passionate about food, and then I have to remind myself that Gil here is the boss, and so whatever he says goes.

Well, yeah, I’m the boss, but I’m not quite the tyrant she makes me out to be. You have to remember that I need to answer to people as well, and I don’t wanna upset them.

Yeah, well, then you should listen to Ava. She has some great ideas.

Oh, I never said she didn’t. Now, Ava–Ava has a very valuable skill set. Some might even say a unique skill set. All I know is, she’s gonna make this business a huge success.

I couldn’t agree more.

Well, I need to get back to my office. Detective Michaels, good to see you again.

Yeah.

[soft ambient music] Do you–do you like working for this guy?

Meh, he’s not so bad. Why do you ask?

Um, I don’t know, something about him rubs me the wrong way.

That was such a great dinner. Thank you. But I feel kinda bad about leaving Li at home by himself. He doesn’t normally like to show that he’s hurting, but… today he sure didn’t hide how upset he was.

And why wouldn’t he be?

Yeah. Why wouldn’t he be? I mean, he lost his shares in the most humiliating way, and he is definitely not looking forward to telling that to our father. But I think it’s mostly about Gabi. The way she used him, it’s hurtful.

Well, to be fair–

[laughs] Okay, he did awful things to her too, but… he’s finally trying to put this whole obsessive thing with her behind him.

Oh, yeah? Well, that’s good.

It is. And don’t tell him I told you this, but he’s been in therapy with Dr. Evans, and he kind of had a breakthrough. I mean, he finally told me that he’s ready to move on with his life and… now I’m just worried that another betrayal by Gabi is gonna cause him a huge setback.

You’re really protective of him.

Yeah, well, he and I do bicker a lot, it’s true, but… he’s my brother… and I love him. I hate that he’s so miserable.

Well, then let’s get home and cheer him up. And who knows, maybe we can, uh, share this little, you know, lava cake with him so…

Their agenda the whole time was just getting Kristen’s shares of DiMera. That’s all they wanted. They weren’t gonna help me out with Rachel at all.

Brady, I’m so sorry.

It’s okay. You told me. You warned me. You said, “Don’t trust them.” You were right. But I was desperate, and I just want my little girl back.

I know, but to lie to you like that and to use a child. I mean, that’s reprehensible.

That means they’ll be targeting somebody else.

In the case of Everett, as he just explained to you just now, he was in a catastrophic car accident and spent a year in a coma, so I think we might both try to have a little compassion for him.

And he apologized for that. He said he misspoke, and he was obviously very embarrassed by it. And why are you suddenly trashing him when you just said that you apologized for being standoffish and that he seemed like a nice guy?
