Yeah, I went to spencer, and I told him his father had arranged the attempt on hayden’s life. Then spencer took the bait and went straight to his father. And then I had spinelli record the conversation. I find it really hard to believe that nikolas would come clean about what he did to hayden. Well, not in so many words, but there was so much evasion and damage control, it was clear to spencer that his father was guilty. And how did spencer take it? He was crushed. What about nikolas? Nikolas covered all his bases. Even hayden knew what he did. You know, he paid her off. So I am going to use this money and do the right thing. We feel that, at least for the time being, avery is — is much safer with us. Well, avery — she’s safe where she’s at, at home. Well, now, she has more than one home — you know that. Yeah, well, instead of trying to get more time with avery, maybe you should find a family counselor with spencer. That way, all three of you can have a little more peace. Come on, let’s get out of here. Dear god. The hypocrisy is staggering.

[ Sighs ] Still, sonny could be right about spencer. You are not kidding about these pictures. Mnh-mnh. They are amazing! Oh! I’m so proud that my daughter took the initiative to bring a national geographic photographer of joel sartore’s stature to port charles. Oh! I mean, look at that one. Mm-hmm. I know, right? That’s a golden snub-nosed monkey, and it’s one of the most endangered species on the planet. as much as I’d love to turn nikolas in to the cops, there’s not enough evidence. Then you’re better off holding the threat over his head and charging him a fortune for you to be quiet. Mm. Well, I’m glad you agree. Typically, I’m not a fan of blackmail, but nikolas deserves that in this case.

[ Breathing quickly ] Can you communicate to me your level of pain?

[ Sighs lightly ] The police are going to want to talk to you at some point. Your pain meds should kick in soon. And I will be back to check in on you in just a little while, okay?

[ Door opens ] Okay, whoever went after joey sure moves fast, because I barely got home from the savoy and dante was knocking on my door, ready to ask me questions. That’s alright. He’s gonna want to talk to you. Listen, I expected it, alright? But I g– I’m — before I do anything else, I need to see joey. Okay. Portia: Carly. Sonny. Hi. Hey. Portia, how are you? Curtis told me what happened at the club last night. Are you doing alright after the incident? Yes, I’m fine. Thank you. Good. [ Breathes deeply ] So, um, are you here about mr. Novak? Okay, first of all, that incident should have never happened. And if you can tell curtis that I apologize? I’m sure that he would appreciate it and tell you that it’s not necessary. Arrested, extradited, and then released the next day on bail. After keeping sonny away from you for all these months, now she’s just allowed to walk around free? Yeah, it’s unbelievable. [ Chuckles ] You know what I mean. It’s really sweet. Like a jane austen hero. Honestly, I wish spence and I would have waited before we got so close. Sex is no way to resolve disagreements. It’s a way to put them aside, but talking it out is so much healthier. So it’s good that you and joss will have that foundation of communication before you take it to the next level. Um… I need to work in the kitchen. How’s the studying going? I’m learning a lot… about? Manipulative, conniving women who will say or do anything to get what they want, no matter who they hurt. [ Chuckles ] Because otherwise… think about it — the four of us go away together. We can get some girl time in away from the boys. Try and understand each other better. I think we understand each other just fine. And if you’re worried about approaching cam about the idea — why would I be worried? He’s already on board. Us renting a cabin for a few days with separate rooms for you and cam, of course. I miss my family. I do. I mean, I see them all the time here. It’s not the same. I miss being at home with them around a dinner table, with all my girls — fighting and me disapproving of kristina’s life choices just so she could throw prison in my face. Yeah. What about those accommodations? Hey, it is a great house. Mm-hmm. Julian bought it for me when his mafia ties blew up my other one. Alright. You must have some happy memory of the place. Mm-hmm. Most of them are pleasant. Mnh. You know, I think maybe 51 1/2 percent.

[ Chuckles ] But you’re living there now. What do you like about it? Um…the kitchen. It has a kitchen?

[ Chuckles ] I knew it had a kitchen ’cause I almost burned it down. I don’t know. I-I enjoy it. You know, I turn on the music, whip up a couple of meals for tj and molly, who barely gets to eat them. Mm, what do you make? I could tell you, but given what you’re probably eating here, it would be a cruel and unusual punishment.

[ Chuckles ] No, seriously, I — I love the place.

[ Sighs ] Oh, my god. I do miss it. I knew it. I knew it. That is not a positive statement. Well, it could be. Come on, walk out of this place and — and help me make the nonprofit a — a force for the good. Shawn, it’s different for you — you best nikolas, and you made him pay for it. He’s my nephew. I tried to instill a sense of right and wrong in him, but I have failed miserably, and I’m not going to let him be the reason that I get out of here. Ava: You know I’m right. Very soon, spencer will realize that he misses the life he was born to.

[ Breathes sharply ] When spencer was younger, he had a disdain for the locals. Called them “townies.”

I thought we had gotten somewhere yesterday when you came in here apologizing for using our friendship, hoping I wouldn’t hate you. And I’ve got to hand it to you, it sounded like you meant it. Beneath you? Because you went from swearing you would never speak to ava again to coming in here, helmet in hand, hoping to snow ava into thinking that you accept her back in your father’s life. Okay, yes! I need money! Good luck with that. For a lawyer! So that I can get a place for esme and me. We have no time alone. We can’t even afford to go out to eat. I mean, this is no way to live, trina. Oh, my god. You are so pathetic! You are nothing more than a spoiled child of privilege. And worst of all, you’re a liar. You want to trick ava into thinking that she’s accepted into your family so you can get your hands on some cash so you don’t have to slum it living like the rest of us. You know what? Here are my terms, joey — I want everything. Everything? What do you mean? I want everything that’s left of your uncle’s organization, novak’s holdings here and offshore. [ Elevator doors close ] Okay. Although I’d rather do it someplace quieter. Anywhere you like. Just after I make a call. Trina, please. Why are you still here? I’ve asked you to leave. I’m working on a very important project, and I don’t have time for you.

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry, okay? I just don’t know what to do. I told you what to do! I told you to go to work and be your own man. Not esme’s boyfriend, not your father’s son, not some money-grubbing little phony. Be you! Be the guy that convinced me to go to my graduation party — not the creep that rigged the sprinklers here to shower me in fake blood. I’ve apologized for that a thousand times, trina. I’m sorry. You know… when I first met you — or rather, when I met victor — sure, he was a lie, but he was a much better person than this mess I see in front of me. If you want to do right, find him.

[ Chuckling ] Find victor? What do you… find the part of you that can ride above the selfish idiot I see in front of me! Be the person that can learn from his mistakes and be a better person. And nikolas swears it’s legit, but I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him. Well, I think you could probably throw him a fair distance. Alright. This is a first glance, but, honestly, everything seems to be in order, and it looks like you are the new administrator of a well-funded nonprofit. Mm. Well, I can, uh — I can appoint other administrators. Uh, consider the offer on the table. Permanently. Ms. Davis? Yes. I have some good news. The governor has issued you a pardon. The — the governor issued me a pardon? Mm-hmm. I’m just as surprised as you seem to be, but it’s official. You’re going to be released. Portia: I don’t know what it is… but there’s something about that man in that sketch. Or maybe I’m just overreacting to a coincidence. You want to know what I think? Trust your instincts.

[ Elevator bell dings, doors open ] Good advice. Thanks.

[ Elevator doors slide shut ] I don’t think joey’s gonna do anything stupid like that again. Uh, have you met the man? He’s pretty stupid. Yeah, but he’s alone. He’s got no backup.

[ Elevator doors open ] Okay, what did you do? I-I took everything the novaks had. The holdings, their people — everything. Really?

[ Chuckling ] Yeah. Okay, well, what do you think the novaks are going to have to say about that? Uh, to me? Probably nothing. To joey, probably a lot.

[ Chuckles softly ] Okay, so instead of eliminating him, you gave him a fate worse than death. Mercy’s a funny thing. And just when I thought you couldn’t impress me more. All right, so, when you were talking to joey, did he give you any idea about who attacked him? No. Not at all. Sonny, if it wasn’t you and it wasn’t me, then who did it?

I’d imagine a lot of these species are endangered. I’m afraid so. But I know you didn’t come to hear me gush about the photo ark. How can I help you? Well, I was worried about cyrus renault, but it could be something more commonplace. I mean, maybe he owns a competing nightclub and is checking out your strengths and weaknesses. Nah.

Quartermaine the photo ark project. The what project? What? Photo ark. In collaboration with national geographic, the photographer joel sartore is documenting every species living in captivity. Take a look at these photographs. They’re incredible. Oh, yes, they are. Look. Mr. Sartore has been to wildlife sanctuaries and zoos all over the world. Oh. Trina was just educating me. The photographer is using this project to spread awareness for conservation across the globe. Mm-hmm. Brilliant. While that’s wonderful work, what does it have to do with the gallery? Well, you’ve been encouraging me to put together an art event on my own for extra credit in art class. What if I organized an exhibit here at the gallery hosting the photo ark project?

Oh, trina, I love it. I love your enthusiasm. And I love that you want to spearhead your own project — your own event. But I just don’t think that hosting the photo ark project is gonna be feasible. Well, I checked the gallery’s calendar. We’re not holding any events in those two weeks. But the event would need to be underwritten, and I just don’t think it’s possible to find somebody to — to — to bankroll that kind of event on such short notice. How about me? Did novak say who beat him up? I’m afraid he’s still unconscious. A good samaritan found him at van ness near the pier and called 911. Wonder what he was doing down there. Well, it’s a shortcut to the harbor view district. Lots of new nightlife sprung up there recently. Like the savoy. So, there never was a plane crash… and drew’s been alive this whole time? The wsb and investigators searched for him, but there was no sign of him. I mean, if I had only gotten there sooner… I hear “what ifs” from my patients all the time. You could plead me out — my public defender would need to remember my name first. True. Maybe if I grovel and agree to his terms, my father can be persuaded to pay for an a-list attorney. The governor plansto issue you a complete pardon for your attack on detective falconeri, which is a little dicey for him — you stabbing a cop and all. But the governor, he’s prepared to take the hit as a personal favor to me. Now, of course… if I have to fend off groundless allegations that could tarnish my reputation, my political sway, it would simply… disappear. Along with your pardon.

[ Breathes sharply ] Going to your father is a terrible idea. I should’ve realized the psych patients would be locked in their cells for the night. But not ryan? Does he get special privileges, or…? No, not really. But because he’s immobile, no one’s worried he’ll escape. So, what exactly drew you to working with criminals? Mentally ill ones at that? [ Chuckles ] Sometimes, business — it’s just that. It’s business. You know as well as i that cassadine industries — it has many tentacles that reach into many interests around the world, and sometimes, things get complicated. I have to look outside of the company for help.

so, nikolas, my nephew… mm-hmm. I always thought he might be a good cassadine ’cause he had a nice mother. And he was good for a while. And in about 10 years or so, he went bad, went to the dark side, became a real cassadine. And then there’s his son, spencer, who, um, went to france, boarding school, came home, graduated, back in port charles, decided that he couldn’t stand his — his father’s wife, ava, and he set out to break them up. Mm. How bad did it get? He stalked her. Oh. You know, at first, he started out just sending her creepy gifts, and then it sort of accelerated into full-blown stalking until finally, he torched her car. You know, the cassadines don’t sound so strange to me. Really? Yeah. Not compared to shiloh and dawn of day. Mm. I spent years under the spell of a man who demanded unwavering loyalty from his family in exchange for betrayal and abuse. So, you know… at least no matter how misguided spencer’s actions were, they were motivated by love. I suppose that’S… one way to look at it.

[ Sighs ] I mean, the poor kid, he idolized his father. And if he had just seen his flaws and recognized them instead of becoming like him… mm-hmm. You’re not really speaking about spencer, are you? You know, you may have made a good therapist had you gone that route.

[ Sighs ] So what? There was no confession. There’s no proverbial smoking gun. I mean, the police haven’t shown interest in this case for years. All my lawyers have to dois remind the court that these claims are being brought by a former hitman for the mob. You’ll be laughed out of court. You’ve got nothing. But you are no innocent, nikolas. Everyone knows you’re shady and can’t be trusted. And somehow hayden is more trustworthy? Why do you keep talking about her like she’s mother teresa?! Hayden barnes is a grifter. Look, hayden may not be a saint, but she’s still a human being who was shot. And she still deserves justice. You think you are on some noble mission. But the truth is… hayden already knows. [ Groans ] And the marriage is invalid. So jason was free to help me rescue you. Which is nice. I’ll give you that. But he’s a nice guy. He’s a lethal killer. I know firsthand what it’s like to go up against cyrus renault, and your nephew had to be very brave to do that. Well, he’s a very complicated guy. With one hand, he takes what he wants for himself, and with the other hand, he offers me something no one else can. How so? He’s friends with the governor and can arrange to give me a full pardon. You can go free? All I have to do is say yes. You make it sound like it’s a problem. What’s stopping you? Hayden t old me she had hersuspicions, but she didn’t say. That was five years ago. You’re a little behind the times. So, listen to me. Hayden knew, and hayden being hayden, she used it to her advantage. Or did no one tell you? She and I came back to port charles together to reclaim the cassadine estate from valentin and return it to me. I knew hayden was working with you. Place is a hell of a lotbetter than pentonville. We both know that. But why the hell would anyone want to stay here if they didn’t have to? Lots of reasons. Because you’re safe here, because almost every decision is made for you, because you know who you are in here.

[ Sighs ] And all the temptations that I don’t have access to here I’ll — I will have access to when I’m — I’m — I’m out there. So, you know, it’s easy to be strong when you don’t have the option to be weak. Yeah. So what are you gonna do? Are you just gonna stay in here, hiding? You know, life is — it’s full of prisons, and I’m not talking about this one, with the locks on the doors, with the fence around the perimeter. I’m talking about the prisons that we create for ourselves in our own minds. Trust me, I’ve been there.

[ Sighs ] So before you — you turn down an offer to go free, you got to ask yourself something. “Can I do more good in here or out there in the world?” There’s no price tag on the years you spent in prison. But like I said, this isn’t about your past. It’s about your future. My opening offer is $500,000. Nah. I’m not like you, nikolas. People aren’t a commodity to me. I’ll live. You? Well, I just had a run-in with esme. She’s a piece of work. Sounds like we both need to talk. Meet you at kelly’s? No. Cam’s not done working. I’ll come to you. Spencer: You want to fire me? Go ahead. But let me make this clear — I didn’t quit. I had a family emergency with my father. Was he hurt? No, it wasn’t that kind of emergency. I had something really important to ask him. And the way that he answered told me everything, and I’m done with him. So I came back here because I really need this stupid job. And I’m not saying that I like it, but I need it. And I think that I really could have been good at this job, but I guess now we’ll never know. Spencer, wait. Take it. Now get back to work. This offer is good for a limited time. You’ll never get a better one, not from the pcpd or the da’s office, that’s for sure. Definitely not from hayden. So, what do you say? I’m okay with that, jason. I’ll take my chances. Just kill this bastard! No, britta! Drew will kill her, jason. It’s his mission. If you don’t believe me, ask liesl. Peter’s right. While the conditioning is active, nothing will stop drew from completing whatever mission he’s given. So there you have it. It all boils down to one simple question, jason — do you want your brother’s blood on your hands?

[ Gun thuds ]

[ Laughs ] Take it.

[ Grunts ] I just saved your life, sis. If you had tried to shoot me, drew would have killed you and jason for trying to save you in the meantime. So now look at it this way — we all get to live a little bit longer… for now.
