If you’re qualifying your ill will towards me, this must be a really big ask. What do you need, Chad?

Wow, you seriously just said that to me. You really get around.

I’m so sorry. That was a really stupid blurt. I honestly–I didn’t mean for it to sound disparaging. Um, yeah, I guess maybe it’s– I don’t know. Maybe it’s just weird for me to hear about you dating other people, you know?

I thought you ghosted me, Everett.

Yeah. I really–I shouldn’t have fallen into that coma.

I’m very sad that that happened to you, and I’m relieved that you’re OK.

I just wish I’d been OK before you started dating all these other guys.

Not other guys plural. Alex and my relationship was very brief. It was never all that serious.

And why is that? I mean, I don’t know. He’s a great-looking guy, heir to half the Kiriakis fortune. To say he’s a catch, at least on paper, would be an understatement. Why’d you dump him?

[sighs]

I’m well aware the old CEO dumped Bella, but Maggie’s not calling the shots at Titan anymore. So I’m gonna need to see the sales figures for the last six months of circulation. I’ve also hired Theresa Donovan to run the magazine. So I want to set up some revenue goals. Thank you.

[knocking] Brady. Hey, do we have an appointment?

I don’t. I didn’t think I needed one, but I’m here to accept your offer.

You mean to bring Basic Black over to Titan?

That is the one I mean.

[chuckles]

I mean, assuming you’re still interested. If you’re not, I can–

You’re damn right I’m upset. I just found out that you added Brady Black to your witness list for today’s custody hearing.

Yeah, well, if you can call Eric to testify against me, then why can’t I call his brother? You should know by now that I will do anything I can to protect my daughter.

Damn it, Konstantin, there has to be a better way. Look, I don’t have any illusions about the kind of person I am, but stealing babies, I don’t do that, especially not Maggie’s granddaughter. Who are you calling?

I have Alex Kiriakis on speed dial. Once I tell him you have been lying to him, he won’t have any illusions about who you are either.

That old bastard Victor made a grave mistake cutting me out of his will, and I will take what I am owed now from his widow, which I can only accomplish if this child’s mother is in my corner. Hmm. The meddlesome Sarah Horton wants me to go back to the old country. Well, as much as I miss the taste of a good baklava, I am not leaving empty handed. And since Maggie’s daughter holds so much sway over her, I must win her over. Simple as that.

OK, fine. Great. How are you gonna win her over by stealing Sarah’s baby?

Let me worry about that. You just play your part, and Alex will never find out the truth– that he is not Victor’s son, and that Xander is.

[soft dramatic music]

Victoria is not just your daughter, Sarah. She’s ours. You couldn’t have made her without me.

And as for today, you’ll get to spend your side of things by dragging Eric into court, trying to equate what I did to him with me trying to protect Victoria from you, which will open the door for Brady to share all about your craven behavior towards him and his family and all of the misery you have caused since you showed up in Salem. You think you have a case to make me seem like an unfit parent?

[chuckles] Wait until the judge gets a load of you.

Yeah, I know I judged you pretty harshly for the things you did to Abigail.

I assume that you still do.

Well, I heard you haven’t had the best of luck squeezing the Von Leuschners for the euros they owe you for marrying my Uncle Dimitri.

[sighs] That’s an ongoing enterprise.

Which is why I’m sure you could use some cash to tide you over, and I’m willing to give you a whole stack of it in exchange for your half stake in the “Spectator.”

Thought you said it was weird for you to hear about me dating other people.

It is.

So then why are you asking about my quasi-relationship with Alex Kiriakis? Are you thinking of taking over Lady Whistleblower’s column?

[laughs]

Not the worst idea at the moment. No, strictly off the record… maybe it is hard for me to hear about you dating other guys. But I have to admit some part of me is also curious, you know? I just– I wonder about what your life has been like since we– since we parted ways. So indulge me, please.

Fine. And about Alex… I only got involved with him because you had disappeared, and because I was a little desperate to feel wanted, desirable. He and I didn’t last very long. He was and probably still is a player. Anyway, when I decided that we were done, he had a little trouble letting go.

So that’s why Alex was saying that Chad was jealous of him.

It was really awkward for a while.

Like it is now with the three of us?

OK, Everett, can we not go there?

I’m sorry. I just– I don’t want you to be uncomfortable, you know? I mean, it’s– it’s obvious that Chad was threatened by Alex’s inability to let go, as you put it, and maybe that’s how he perceives me now– as someone who is crazy about you, unable to let go. And since, unlike you and Alex, you and I were seriously involved, I have to assume that Chad is even more threatened by me.

I don’t get it. Why would you approach me to buy part of “The Spectator” where Xander has his half and he’s local to you?

I have my reasons.

[chuckles] So the oaf turned you down, did he? He’s obviously committed to remaining a member of the fourth estate.

How about we stay on topic, yeah? What’s your price?

[soft dramatic music]

I’m not there yet, Chad. You see, having stabbed my father in the back to get my stake in “The Spectator” and just to sell it for some quick, easy cash, it’s– it’s almost like adding insult to injury.

Not if you tell Jack you’re selling it to me, husband of his late daughter, and as you know, Abby was editor-in-chief when she died.

So this is about Abigail? Honoring her legacy?

That’s part of it.

Yeah, there’s more. This offer has more to do with the new editor-in-chief.

Everett, you say that you don’t want me to be uncomfortable, and yet you keep bringing up Chad– asking how jealous he is, who he’s more threatened by, you or Alex. How can that not make me uncomfortable?

I know, I know. I’m just concerned about you.

Why?

Because there seems to be a pattern of possessive behavior here with Chad that so far you’re unwilling to acknowledge. I don’t…

[sighs] I do not want to make things harder for you. I really don’t. But sometimes, it can be helpful to get an outsider’s objective point of view.

Oh, because you’re so very objective about my relationship with Chad.

OK, fine. Maybe I’m a little bit tiny, tiny, tiny bit biased. But bottom line, I care about you. And I might have some insights that are worthwhile for you to hear.

What happened between me and Brady is– well, it’s irrelevant to our case.

Irrelevant? You snatching Brady and Kristen’s daughter and trying to pass her off as mine? Love, that is a central part of our case. It shows your character, or lack thereof, not to mention it was a crime.

[soft dramatic music]

I know you’ve never totally understood this, and apparently never will, but I did that to spare you the pain of losing your child.

And yet here you are causing me the same pain again.

You know damn well this is a totally different situation.

Oh. Do you know what I know? Because there’s always a rationalization with you. And you’re always telling yourself that you do the worst things for the best reasons, but the fact of the matter is is that you let Brady think that his daughter was dead. He was devastated, forced to grieve a child that was still alive. That is not just wrong, that is depraved. You are depraved. And once a judge hears all about this, there is no way you or your cutthroat lawyer will be able to convince anyone, let alone the judge, that you should be anywhere near our child.

This is good. I’m glad the offer still stands.

Hey, of course it does. And honestly, man, you were kind enough to bring me on board with Basic Black after Maggie cut me loose, and I felt bad about walking away to come back here to Titan, so I feel like I kind of owe it to you to make this happen. Only thing is–

So this new editor-in-chief, Everett Lynch, I assume you consider him a problem?

Yeah, I do. He recently moved to Salem, and he’s also Stephanie’s ex, and he swears up and down that– that he accepts that he and Stephanie are old news, but he just hired her to do PR for the paper.

[soft dramatic music]

So he’s making a play for your girl, and you want him out of the way.

And I’m willing to pay a whole lot of money to make sure he is. So now you know my motivation. Can we make a deal?

OK, so you have your say. And if I say you’re wrong–

Then you win the bet, obviously.

Go ahead.

OK. OK. Well first of all, I would just like to say that I am not trying to insult Chad at all, OK? For real, I just think he’s being unfair to you asking you to be patient with him while he, what, sorts out his feelings about his late wife when he’s the one who asked you to move in with him and his kids. And at the same time, he has an issue whenever you have any contact with one of your exes.

OK, Everett, that’s–

But just let me– let me say my piece, and then you can–

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

From where I’m sitting, it just seems like it’s all about him. It’s the Chad show. It’s about his dead wife, and his problems with all of the other men in your life when we both know that to have a healthy relationship, there has to be a take and a give. I mean, I know that our relationship was like that, right? Only this time around, it’s you doing all of the giving and Chad doing all of the taking. Am I wrong?

Yes, you’re wrong. So you lose.

[bright acoustic music]

You’re putting Theresa in charge of Bella? You can’t trust that woman, Alex.

Brady, I know about her reputation, but that’s why I think she’s right for this. Theresa, she doesn’t take any prisoners, man. I need somebody like that on my team. And all these people at Titan, I know they won’t say it, but I know they’re thinking that I should have left Maggie in charge.

I see where you’re coming from. You’re looking for an ally, aren’t you?

I think you just did. So let me make myself very clear. Alex, Theresa Donovan is someone you turn your back on, even for a second, at your own peril.

Not only can Brady tell the court about the time you shot him, but he can also inform them about the time you kidnapped Nicole and her daughter, Holly. That should button up things nicely, don’t you think?

[phone ringing] I have to take this. Mom?

Sarah? Sarah! Oh my God, Victoria’s gone.

What do you mean Victoria’s gone?

I came into the study and someone was taking her. And he ran away, and– but Konstantin ran after him.

Did you call the police?

I wanted to call you first.

Well, call them now! I’m on my way. You did this, didn’t you?

I did what? What do you think I did?

Victoria’s gone. Somebody snatched her. You–you set it up, didn’t you? You thought it would make me look like an unfit mother at the hearing so that somebody that can’t take care of their own child–

Sarah, that’s insane! I–you have to believe me, I had nothing to do with this. I’m as horrified about it as you are. Look, you can hate on me as much as you want later, but right now we need to get to the house. Our daughter needs us.

OK, yes, let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go.

[tense music]

You know, if you would have phoned me yesterday, I would have told you that “The Spectator” was my link not only to my father, but to Salem, and that I would never consider severing that link.

But now?

Well, just this morning I read an article by Everett the editor entitled, “What He Did For Love,” all about the sizzling romance between Leo Stark and Dimitri Von Leuschner.

I’m guessing it didn’t move you.

Oh, yes, it did. It moved me straight to the loo where I lost my lunch. You know, I have to say, though, this Everett character, he is quite a skilled writer to portray Leo in such a positive light. So I’d say that the timing works in your favor, Chad.

[soft dramatic music] Make me an offer that isn’t insulting, and “The Spectator’s” yours.

You said I’d be the judge, and I said you lost the bet.

Hey, I am glad to be wrong in this case.

You sure about that?

Yes, I am. I would much prefer to think that your relationship with Chad is making you happy. I mean that.

[bright acoustic music]

I like talking to you, Everett, but I–

I don’t want our talks to always go down the rabbit hole of what’s not working in my relationship with Chad. It’s not fair to him, for one thing. Chad’s an amazing guy. It’s just– it’s not black and white. No relationship is. And you’ve only been hearing about the bad stuff when I vent.

When you vent about what?

The police are on their way.

What happened? I don’t understand.

Just take a deep breath, Maggie. Tell us what happened.

I went down to the mausoleum to bring flowers to Victor, and when I came back, Konstantin was unconscious on the floor, and someone in a hoodie was taking Victoria out of the bassinet.

Who was it?

I don’t know. I don’t know.

Was it a man or a woman?

I don’t know. I never saw their face. All I know, they were strong enough to knock out Konstantin with that fireplace poker. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I should never have let Victoria alone. I should have waited for you to come home and then take those flowers down to Victor, and maybe then if I had, then this horrible person wouldn’t have gotten away with your precious baby.

[tense music]

[sobbing]

Who would do this? Who would take our little girl?

Don’t you think maybe you’re exaggerating a little bit?

Alex, I know you can handle yourself. It’s not just about you anymore, is it? Look around you. I mean, you’re Victor’s heir. You–you’re the face of the company now– this company that my grandfather built the last God knows how many years. If you decide to get into bed with Theresa Donovan, literally or figuratively, I swear to you that increases her ability to wreak havoc on a whole new level.

I doubt there’s anything you could do to drive him away.

Well, I think that’s true of anyone who knows Steph personally or professionally. I mean, as you know, not only is she a terrific person, she’s an extremely gifted publicist. My gossip columnist gets tangled up in a series of felonies, and somehow she manages to spin it to make him the good guy.

Yeah, no, I– I saw that piece. Not everybody I talked to was buying the warm and fuzzy take on that slimeball Leo Stark.

Oh, the response I’m getting is almost wholly positive– through the roof, in fact. But it’s no thanks to me, honestly. PR is decidedly not my thing, which is why I’m glad I have Steph on my team. I just hope you don’t mind me stealing her away to do some work for me. You don’t mind, do you?

[soft dramatic music]

So everything I’m saying about Theresa– let me guess. Deaf ears, right?

No, no. I’ve been listening. Honestly, Brady, I don’t mind you speaking your mind about what you think about her. I know you’re just looking out for me.

Yeah, yeah, but I also think that that’s your way of telling me that you’re not gonna heed my advice, so I get it. I’m the kind of guy that needs to learn things the hard way. Alex, listen. Don’t you come crying to my shoulder when Theresa actually screws you over and makes your life miserable.

Yes, and I also informed him that you are gonna be heading the reboot of Bella. And there’s gonna be a lot of overlapping with those two brands, so I’m gonna need you two to play nice. Can that happen?

Oh, I don’t have a problem working with anyone.

Me neither. I mean, we can co-parent a teenager. We can certainly deal with this kind of arrangement.

Great. Excellent. All right, then. I’m gonna get ourselves a little conference room. We’ll get the lawyers all together, make this deal official. Theresa, you got a file right here on my desk for HR. I know the two of you are just as excited as I am to be getting back to work together!

[sighs] Konstantin, you creepy old bastard. That kid better be home and safe with its mother.

Police are focusing their efforts on the search for the suspect. They’ll be sending detectives over here later to take everyone’s statement, especially yours.

It all happened so fast, I’m not sure how much help I can be. I’m afraid I didn’t get a good look at this man’s face.

But you–you chased after the person, right? Caught them.

Well, what did they want? Why did they come here?

I would imagine they were hoping to ransom your granddaughter. I–I–I don’t want to frighten you, Maggie, but now that you are Victor’s widow, you are a target. You might want to think about increasing your security.

I’ll definitely do that. But in the meantime, you’re gonna come upstairs with me, and I’m gonna tend to your wounds.

Wait, wait, wait. You and I– I know we’ll never be friends, but I am so grateful that you saved our little girl.

Oh Everett, no. Thank you for– for asking me how I– how I feel about you working with Stephanie. I appreciate that. And you know, the truth is that, you know, when I first heard about the two of you working together, I didn’t– I didn’t react all that well. But the truth is I think Stephanie is a total pro, and you’re lucky to have her.

I was a little bit annoyed at that– you trying to turn Leo Stark into some kind of folk hero, but I guess that’s just an illustration of how good you are at what you do, which is great, and I think you’re gonna do great things for “The Spectator.” And that means a lot to me, because honestly, the paper is really important to me and my family, so…

I appreciate you being cool with all this, Chad.

Yeah, no. It’s–it’s great. It’s just about–it’s just about boundaries, right, you know? Boundaries.

Hm. You know, you didn’t stop for one second to think about yourself. You ran after that dangerous person without even thinking about your safety. And then you brought back my precious Victoria. You know what? I just don’t know where to begin to thank you.

You have welcomed me into your home. That is more than enough thanks.

Oh, Konstantin, you came here telling us you were from Greece, but the way you’ve watched over us, I think you could very well be an angel sent from heaven.

[ominous music]

I’ve never felt more helpless in my life. And then Konstantin walked in with our daughter in his arms.

It was a miracle.

[phone beeps] Oh, it’s Sloan. We’re due in court soon.

Court? Oh, my God, I totally forgot. Well, how can I leave her now? How can I think about any of that stuff? We–no, we have to postpone it again. There’s no other way.

I mean, I know Everett’s new to town, probably doesn’t know Leo’s story, but you’d think he’d– at least as the new editor in chief, he would have asked some questions. What kind of idiot would give him the idea to make Leo Stark into a folk hero?

I’m glad to hear it. I assume this means that we’re moving forward with the custody hearing. No reason for another postponement.

So it was just Everett’s way of announcing himself to the leadership, then?

Yeah. And how am I supposed to feel, Stephanie? I mean, this guy comes out of a coma, and he moves to Salem. He gets a job in town. And the first thing he does is hire you to represent him. Now, every time I turn around, you two are together, reminiscing about the good old days, discussing problems in our relationship.

Well, for starters, when he asked you to take him on as a client, you could have said no.

Keeping it in the family would be nice, yeah. And no offense, but the Hortons and the Deverauxs aren’t exactly thrilled with the tone the paper’s taken of late.

Well, I mean, that was mostly Gwen’s editorial choices. But she’s gone now. And so is Leo Stark. I’m determined to bring dignity back to The Spectator.

You could have fooled me based on the editorial I read this morning.

Oh, it was supposed to be provocative. The mandate I gave our new editor in chief was to make this a place for real journalism. So I hope, if I do sell it to you, that you’ll keep him on?

No, what I’m saying is that if Victor loaned Konstantin the money to start his restaurant, never asked him to pay it back, it means that he’s kind of fond of the guy.

OK. But we’ve only heard that story from Konstantin. And don’t forget all the shady dealings that Victor was involved in over the years.

You’re right. All we have is Konstantin’s word. Be nice if we could get the truth from Victor. And you know what? Maybe we can.

Why the hell would you want to tell Alex the truth about the package? This was your plan too. Don’t you want your cut of the inheritance?

She’s still grieving Victor. They were madly in love, you know.

So why don’t we do a little more digging, you know, interview some of his friends, maybe ask around about this, what, Mr. Mela–Mela–

Yeah, that guy. And see if his story checks out.

Well, your dad was on the phone with her when the line suddenly went dead. He thinks she might have been in an accident.

I don’t understand, EJ. Dimitri was supposed to bring our baby to the hospital. Where are they?

I– I don’t know. I’ve spoken with several people on the staff, ,::, security personnel. No one’s seen Dimitri or our baby.

Well, have you called the police?

I have, yes. I’ve spoken with an officer. They’re putting out an APB.

An APB? What? Then why isn’t this building beeping like crazy with an AMBER Alert? EJ! Our baby is being held by a psychotic criminal! My God! God only knows what Dimitri has planned.

You need to put more resources on the ground, damn it. This isn’t just any injured person. It is a very pregnant Nicole. So why don’t you press pause on whatever else is taking up your precious time and do something?

You entitled bastard. I was just spending my precious time with one of my detectives who was wounded in the line of duty, which could have been far worse, as she was held with a gun to her head. So right now, I am focused on the son of a bitch who thinks that he can get away with this. And when I do find Von Leuschner, he’s gonna wish that he was never born.

Oh, and here I thought that she went away for killing Li Shin.

That too. And even though it doesn’t get me my CEO position back, it was exceedingly gratifying, separating our bastard brother from his homicidal wife.

Well, from what I understand, it was sort of a, uh, spontaneous decision.

Whoa, wait a minute. Are you telling me Eric rushed out to marry Sloan after I told him I was marrying EJ?

Yeah, yeah, things with Stephanie are okay. Yeah. She says she’s sorry for missing the wedding. She had to work.

That’s fine. So, um, the problems you two were having, I assume they’ve been resolved? The difficulty you had on moving on from Abigail.

[smacks lips] Actu–

And–and now there’s this new problem.

What is that?

This guy from Stephanie’s past showed up, someone who she was deeply involved with– serious relationship.

So do you think that this other guy might have the potential of getting between you?

I wish I could say no. Before, I could have. But I don’t know. Now with these issues that we’re having around– around my devotion to Abigail, yeah, I think it’s possible, unfortunately.

Yeah, he’s this guy from Seattle, Everett Lynch. And, you know, him and Stephanie were dating for a while. It was pretty serious. He got hit by a car. He was in a coma.

Good Lord, that’s dramatic.

So he’s fully recovered from his injuries, I assume, and just showed up here in Salem.

Yep, and hoping to pick up with Stephanie right where they left off.

Well, a barrel of snakes. That sounds horrible.

Yeah, I don’t mean to burden you with all this, but I don’t have anybody else I can vent to. It’s about this editor-in-chief job. I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

I mean, I know I’m still getting my bearings, but it really seems like “The Spectator” is in huge, huge trouble.

Why? What are you talking about?

It’s just– it’s chaos, you know? I have people banging down my door, complaining. I have department heads threatening to quit. It’s like rats leaving a sinking ship.

[clears throat] I’d heard rumors, but I didn’t realize that it was that bad.

Right, but from what I’m beginning to understand, more recent events have given that reputation a black eye, if you will.

Yeah, well, the paper was stolen by Gwen Rizczech, Jack Deveraux’s long-lost daughter, and now it’s being run by Xander Cook, a known criminal.

Right. Right. Okay. Okay, things I wish I had known before I took the gig.

Yeah, it does sound like a mess.

And to make matters worse, I just found out that the paper’s star gossip columnist has blown town and is on the run with a would-be murderer.

If we rush her, she can’t hit us both.

And why would shooting even one of us be an acceptable outcome?

Oh, you mean that Sloan and Eric are going to have a baby, too, assuming the adoption process goes smoothly.

Eric doesn’t have to know, does he? It’s not like you don’t have other secrets from your husband.

You know, but I think that it was just his passive-aggressive way of trying to push me aside, stake his claim.

And how did Stephanie react?

She was quiet. I have no idea what she was thinking. But before I introduced myself, I saw them in the park, and they were hugging. And then the night before, he stopped by the apartment. That was the first time that they had talked, and she conveniently forgot to tell me about that part.

And that isn’t like her, I take it?

No, not at all. I think she’s stepping back from our relationship.

And you think this other guy could potentially step in?

I don’t know what to think, EJ.

Well, I can tell you what I think.

Well, I didn’t ask for details, and neither should you, so we’ll both have plausible deniability. And as I said, we’ll have to compensate the lawyer that helped us out. So if money is the issue, then I–

It isn’t. It isn’t about money. I’d pay anything to have a baby. It’s the fact, I– I don’t feel great about taking a child that’s supposed to go to someone.

Well, I told the lawyer that I had to run all this past you before closing the deal, and he understood, of course. But he also made it clear that we had to come to a decision quickly, and he’s waiting for my call. But, look, if you want, I will tell him that you don’t want to do it. But you should also know that you and Eric might have to wait a very long time before you get another chance like this– a chance to be loving parents to a beautiful baby boy.

Wow, I can’t believe Melinda found you a baby so fast. I mean, I heard adoption can be really complicated and sometimes take years.

Yeah, it does. Well, we feel very fortunate. How are you? I mean, how are you feeling?

Oh, I– I’d say I feel fortunate, but that doesn’t even cover it. I mean, after everything that I’ve been through, the disappointments and the heartbreaks and now with my baby being due just a few weeks away, I feel– I feel beyond fortunate. I feel like this is a miracle, actually.

Yeah, it really is. So do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl?

No, EJ and I want to be surprised.

Oh, and speaking of surprises, you getting married to Sloan right after I told you that–

Well, even though you cannot see your amazingly beautiful face, you can still see your gorgeous, brown, almond eyes.

And the sheer panic in yours.

Just got it here. So on the knife, Gabi’s prints were found on it, of course, as expected.

How can you say that? We just ousted him from DiMera, and now he’s the district attorney. I mean, if he wants to exact his revenge, yeah, he’s got a pretty surefire way to get it.

Okay. Is EJ gonna want retribution? Absolutely. But he’s no Michael Corleone. He’s chosen the law to wield his power. In other words, he’s bound by its limits. Now, in order to convict you, EJ’s gonna need proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And since you didn’t kill Li Shin, there’s no proof that you did.

[suspenseful music] Hey. The Salem PD, and let me remind you, that includes your brother, they will find who really killed Li Shin.

Someone else’s prints are on the knife?

Well, according to the report, there’s a positive print consistent with a hand larger than the one belonging to Gabriella DiMera. Oh.

It’s Li Shin.

Oh.

Well, that jives with Wendy Shin’s statement that the weapon was one of their kitchen knives. She’d seen him earlier that evening when she came home from work and found him cooking dinner.

They didn’t find any other prints?

No–other than the ones that Wendy gave us to rule her out, none.

Well, it’s not looking good for Gabi.

I am plotzing over how juicy this Gabi story is. Get this– the woman double-crosses her gorgeous ex-husband and then murders him? Ah. This could have been Lady Whistleblower’s moment to pivot into that esteemed Truman Capote territory. Imagine me, martini in hand, yukking it up with the Park Avenue intelligentsia, the toast of the town. Oh, but alas, she is forced to watch from the sidelines, derelict in her duty.

All because of me.

If I hadn’t tried to fix the Gabi-Stefan problem, we would never be in this mess, and I am still so very sorry, Leo.

I know you are. But listen to me, Butch Cassidy, I will always be your Sundance Kid. And lucky for you, the universe did your bidding for you. Think about it: Gabi DiMera is facing God knows how many years in prison, her crestfallen beau, Stefan, blowing kisses to her through a jammed packed courthouse? What fate could be worse than that?

Uh, I don’t know, Leo. Look around–we’re fugitives holed up in this dingy motel room with cold water dribbling out of a shower head and a TV that only plays one infomercial, some sad woman hawking some cut-rate medallion. I swear, if we don’t get in touch with my mother and fast, I fear that this may very well become the days of our lives.

Okay, first off, that infomercial lady is a gay icon waiting to be discovered. And secondly– Hold the phone. Let’s not say au revoir to our Parisian vacay just yet.

Did you hear that, you hunky little doomsayer? Rolf is in Salem. We’re saved. No more playing amateur chemist/barista with this swill.

Darling, as much as I would love to upgrade us to a frothy cappuccino at a bijou café, I’m not quite sure that this news necessarily translates to a one-way ticket out of here.

What are you talking about? It says right here, Rolf was in Salem yesterday.

Yes, exactly. hours ago. Let’s not forget that Rolf is a wanted man, so unless he’s just wandering the corridors of some underground laboratory with a shrunken head, I’d say it’s safe to say that he’s already gone.

Yeah. Yeah. We’re working on that, actually, right now, trying to figure out exactly what happened. But unfortunately, there’s still no strong suspect for the murder of Li.

Well, you’ll just have to understand if I don’t take your word for it.

Because I’m prosecuting? Believe me, Belle, I am just trying to save you the blood, sweat, and tears of investing in this total waste of time. Because of the mountains of evidence stacked against Gabi, there’s no jury in their right mind who would vote not guilty. And of course, regardless of evidence, as a servant of the people of Salem, I will prosecute any defendant to the fullest extent of the law.

Wow, well, thank you for that very lawyerly sermon, but I’m not actually here to discuss your professional duties.

Oh, then why are you here? Unless you’ve heard about my recent nuptials? Did you bring me a gift?

[chuckles] Hardly. I’m actually here to discuss your very personal grudge against my client.

Rafe’s a good man, but he does love his sister, and he’s going to do everything he can to try to clear her, even though from where I’m standing, from where anyone’s standing, she looks mighty guilty.

All right, look, just because there was no evidence found on the murder weapon doesn’t mean that evidence doesn’t exist out there. I mean, the killer had to have left something behind, be it shoe prints, security camera footage, something. I mean, you guys are working on that, right?

Yeah, we’re working on that right now.

I know. I know that you are. But the evidence is not gonna matter, not as long as EJ is the one that’s prosecuting me. Now that this opportunity fell onto his lap, he’s gonna do everything he can to make this into a show trial to punish me for what we did to him.

Okay, Gabi, yes, EJ is hell-bent on revenge, and that is why we cannot give up. Now, Belle seems to believe that we can use EJ’s personal vendetta against him. We can make a very strong case for a conflict of interest, which will result in the charges being dropped and the case dismissed.

[apprehensive music] That’s why she didn’t come with me this morning. She’s talking to EJ right now.

Do you think I’m prosecuting Gabi out of some personal animus?

Oh, I don’t just think it. You see, I just had a conversation with Stefan and Gabi, and they let me know that they are now in possession of all of your DiMera shares, and I know you didn’t like that. And so now you’re using your new professional position as DA to exact revenge on them, which also makes a mockery of our judicial system. And you know what, EJ, that really pisses me off.

Belle. Belle, you wound me. Mayor Price offered me the DA’s office long before I had any inkling that Gabi had been arrested. And if you’re so convinced that I’m engaged in some kind of witch hunt, how do you explain the rather compelling evidence against her?

What evidence?

Must I enumerate it? The victim’s sister discovered Gabi standing over him holding onto a knife covered in his blood. Not to mention, two eyewitnesses overheard Gabi and her husband…

Discussing destroying said evidence.

Hmm, is that it?

That’s quite enough, I think, wouldn’t you say?

I would think it’s enough if it wasn’t completely circumstantial and totally refutable.

Because my client told me when she found Li Shin, he had already been stabbed, and she actually took that knife right out of him in an effort to save his life.

[laughing]

Oh, maybe next time Gabi so casually wanders in on a murder victim, she ought to call the police right away, because from both a medical and legal standpoint, that– that was a big mistake.

Well, either way, it’s hardly a smoking gun.

You know, EJ, you may be smug as hell and imperious, but you’re no idiot, and I know that. And we both know that you don’t have enough evidence for a murder conviction, so if you have any interest in not making a complete embarrassment of yourself with your very first case, I would suggest you drop the charges right now.

I got word that you were trying to track me down.

[gasps] Was it the cleaning lady? The weird-looking one who I’m pretty sure stole my boba tea punch card? Is she keeping tabs on us?

The important thing is that you’re here now, Doctor, and I’m assuming that you’re not planning to stick around Salem for long, so I’d like to humbly request that when you do leave, you’ll be taking us with you. I assure you, my mother will take care of all of the necessary accommodations.

You know, Dimitri, your mother was very disappointed when you lost the inheritance promised in the von Leuschner codicil. After she took a rather sudden leave from Salem, she comforted herself with the knowledge that she would be set up for life, said it would be easy for her. She was counting on you, her beloved son, to claim that fortune, only to see you bungled the entire operation by falling in love.

So does that mean you won’t be helping us?

As I said, your mother was none too happy when you lost your claim to the von Leuschner fortune. It was, after all, a pretty penny. And yet, despite her crushing disappointment, you are her son. And as such, she is, of course, willing to help you.

Oh, thank God. You had me shook there for a second, Dr. Strangelove.

I’m glad to know that I can always count on my mother.

Yeah, any success talking some sense into my thick-skulled brother?

I’m afraid not. I tried to, but he refused to drop the charges.

Can’t say I’m surprised. He’s got me right where he wants me, why would he give that up?

Okay, this is a setback, nothing more. All right, so here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna go to your arraignment, right, we’re gonna pay your bail. And you’re gonna come home, and you’re gonna spend the night in your bed, our bed, right next to me. Okay?

Actually, that might not be possible.

Why?

Because EJ made it very clear that he’s gonna ask the judge to deny your bail.

Wait, why would he do that?

Well, considering that your husband’s family owns a private jet, I think he’s gonna make the case that you’re a flight risk.

My husband’s family, are you kidding me? EJ is a card-carrying member of that family.

And I don’t think that the irony is lost on him, but that’s not gonna deter him, because EJ is a man on a mission, and he has every intention of throwing the book at you.

Of course, Mr. Shin, Wendy will be in touch. And again, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Well, that may have been the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen. It’s like if “Casablanca” took place on Fire Island.

Well, the funniest, sweetest, smartest, most fashionable man that I have ever met is leaving Salem behind for me. It’s probably the least that I can do. But Leo, are you sure that you wanna do this? Because this isn’t just leaving Salem behind, this is leaving your whole life forever. And once we get on that sub, I’m afraid there’s no turning back.

I know. And sure, there will be things I’ll miss. My morning cruller at Sweet Bits. My therapist, Joanne, who most certainly won’t be in network anymore. And of course, I will miss my esteemed position in the fourth estate. Who could ever forget Lady Whistleblower, her adoring fans waiting on her every last word? But I suppose this is ta-ta for now. Or forever, I guess. But Dimitri, my future is with you, wherever that may be.

Even if it’s on the run?

You’re jumping to the wrong conclusion. My wife had nothing to do with what happened here.

Evidence? Have you conducted an investigation? No. And you’ve been a cop for, what, five minutes? Where’d you get that badge from, a Happy Meal?

Mrs. DiMera was seen by two witnesses standing over her mortally wounded ex-husband’s body with a bloody knife. Those two witnesses also heard her say that she needed to get rid of the bloody knife. On top of that, Mr. Shin identified Gabi as his killer right before he died. So even a rookie like me knows that I have more than enough probable cause to make an arrest.

Well, then you’ll be arresting an innocent woman because I didn’t kill Li Shin.

When you fired me, you said it had nothing to do with job performance. You said it was because you just don’t like me.

And I still think it was a huge mistake you made when you got rid of me.

And why is that, Ms. Trask? Because you got me that high profile conviction you said you would? Oh, wait. Never happened.

I’ve put a lot of criminals behind bars.

[scoffs] Tax evaders and jaywalkers.

But the truly dangerous ones, the ones that need to be locked up for the citizens of Salem to feel safe, well, you bungled every chance you had.

That is a gross misrepresentation.

Oh, you–you talk a big game. But actually, all you did as DA was a whole lot of nothing. Case in point: that high profile conviction that I just mentioned, you went on and on about how you were gonna nail Li Shin, how you were gonna get him to confess to– to trying to have Stefan DiMera killed.

I would have! But he bugged my office!

Oh, in other words, he played you, w-which proves my point. You got this whole tough, take-no-prisoners act down. But that’s all it is, blusters and empty promises. Bottom line, you failed to hand me Li Shin, even though you swore that you had him dead to rights.

[intriguing music]

I’m–I’m sorry, Wendy. We did everything we could to save him.

Ooh. I think what you mean, Madam Mayor, is that you haven’t found anyone as capable, qualified, and as cutthroat as I am. And clearly, the ADA that is currently doing my old job on an interim basis isn’t cutting it. Otherwise, you would have made her permanent by now.

And why is that your business?

You are not my boss anymore. In fact, you technically work for me. And as a citizen of Salem, I am very concerned with how this city is being run.

Mm. You want to say your peace?

Well, I have a town hall the third Tuesday of every month. Now, you just call my office. Call my office for the details.

[tense music]

Oh, I’m gonna tear that bitch’s eyes out.

I know you want to hurt Gabi right now, but that is not what Li would have wanted.

She never stopped messing with him– his head, his heart. She tortured my brother, and all he ever wanted to do was love her.

You want to know who he loved? You. Wendy, he was so proud of you, how smart you are, how talented and independent you are. He saw what an amazing future you had ahead of you, and he’d hate it if you throw it away by going after Gabi.

Li did not deserve this. He did not deserve to die.

[soft dramatic music] I’m gonna track down that psycho and make her pay for what she did.

I–I understand wanting revenge, Wendy. I do. I’ve been there, OK? And I wish to hell I hadn’t given in to that impulse. OK, I still deeply regret going after Kayla because I thought she killed my mom–

But she didn’t! Ava’s alive.

[whispers] Li is gone. He was my big brother.

I know how much he meant to you.

[sobbing] He always looked out for me, especially when we were young. I mean, you know how scary my father is. Whenever I did something stupid, which was, like, all the time, Li would step in and take the blame. Oh, my God, I have to call my father. Tripp, how am I going to do this? How am I going to tell him that his son is dead?

I’m–I’m gonna help however I can, OK? You–have him–have him come over to our place. I’ll give you room to talk, to grieve.

My father doesn’t grieve. I’ve never even seen him cry.

OK, then you’ll just talk.

No, he won’t want to. All he’ll want is retribution.

We told Harris what we know. OK? They’re gonna do their investigation.

But what–what do they need to investigate? Gabi practically confessed. I–I–you saw her. She was standing over Li with that knife and said she needed to get rid of it.

And we got there, and so she couldn’t. OK, now the police, they have the murder weapon and our testimony, and plus, your brother named Gabi right before he died.

Wh-what, s-so what, I’m just supposed to sit around and wait for Rafe to put his own sister away?

[spluttering] Like that’s gonna happen.

Wendy, I promise you, the cops will do their job. OK, they’re going to get justice for Li.

Hey. Where’s your partner?

He caught a case, actually, while I got stuck transferring a prisoner to Statesville– a homicide.

Oh, who was it?

Li Shin.

What?

Stabbed to death at his sister’s apartment.

Oh, my God. Wh–what else do you know?

Uh, nothing yet. We’ll know more when Harris gets here. He’s bringing in a suspect.

[footsteps approaching]

And that’s what we know so far, Commissioner. Collected this at the crime scene.

CSU’s at the apartment now.

Yeah, I told them to let Wendy and Tripp know when they can get back inside.

Um, well, my sister’s a suspect in a homicide, so, um, no. No, I’m definitely not OK. Yeah. I need to speak with her.

Rafe, Rafe, maybe– maybe I should handle this interview–

Detective Michaels read you your rights?

Yeah, he did, before he forced me to come down here for no reason.

OK. So right now, I am not speaking to you as a cop. I am speaking to you as your brother. You’re in serious trouble, OK? Now, off the record and just between you and me, what the hell did you do?

[phone alert chimes]

Oh, my God. Li. Wendy, I–I just saw the news about your brother. I am so sorry.

You’re not sorry about Li. Not at all. I know damn well you’re just another one of the vipers in this town who wanted to take him down. Well, he’s down for good. Happy now?

[knocking on door]

Let’s–let’s ignore that. I’m sure it’s just a delivery person with some fruit– a fruit basket, if you will.

A–a fruit basket?

Uh-huh.

[chuckling] OK.

A wedding gift from my mother. She called me three times to let me know that it was coming. I’m sure it’ll keep.

[knocking continues]

Oh. God. OK, you know what, it could be Holly. She forgets her keys sometimes.

I wouldn’t want to keep my stepdaughter out in the cold.

Oh, uh, Mayor Price, we weren’t expecting you.

Well, I called, but you didn’t answer your phone. Now, I’m sure–I’m not sure if you heard the news, but the good people of Salem have just voted me in for the next term.

Oh.

Oh, congratulations. But you came all the way here to tell us that?

No, I came here because I heard you were out of a job. How would you like a new one?

[hopeful music]

I’m sorry, Paulina, but this is going to have to wait. Nicole and I have agreed to put aside all business talk until tomorrow.

Well, as a matter of fact, we are. It’s–it’s our wedding night.

[gasps] You two jumped the broom?

[chuckling] Yes.

Figuratively, yes.

We–we were just in the middle of…celebrating. So perhaps we could find some time to talk tomorrow.

Oh, well, I don’t like to postpone urgent business matters, but what you two need to do is, uh, urgent as well. So I’ll just make the exception.

Um, wait. P-Paulina, hang on a second.

[hopeful music] You came all the way over here to offer EJ a job?

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. I mean, the mayor came all the way over here. The least we could do is hear her out.

[sighs]

I heard that the police, uh, arrested Gabi DiMera.

You and Gabi are exactly alike, a pair of power-hungry predators who screwed my brother– literally– to get what you wanted.

[spluttering] I didn’t–I–I didn’t–

You didn’t what, Melinda? What, what, you–you don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, then let me jog your memory. You used sex to try to get a confession out of my brother, which made me sick to hear about and makes me even sicker now.

Li, he played me as much as I played him.

Oh, the only difference is, he actually liked you.

[scoffs] God only knows why.

[tense music]

I liked him too. And I swear, Wendy, whatever happened between us, I would never wish this on him.

I didn’t do anything.

Gabi, I can’t help you if you don’t tell me the truth.

Rafe, this– this is the truth. Oh, my God, wh-why would I do this? Why would I ruin my life?

I was just briefed by Detective Michaels.

I don’t care what he said.

OK, well, you need to.

Why? I am innocent.

You need a lawyer.

No, I need my brother! Rafe, I swear to you on my daughter’s life, I did not kill Li!

[dramatic music]

OK. All right, tell me what happened.

Where’s my wife?

Uh, she’s in with the commissioner.

Stefan, let Gabi talk to her brother. If there’s anything that Rafe can do to help her, he will.

So Li sent me a text asking me to come over to his sister’s apartment. And when I got there, the door was open, he was lying on the floor, and he had been stabbed.

With this knife?

Yes.

Detective Michaels told me that Wendy Shin and Tripp Johnson saw you standing over Li’s body, holding this knife, saying to Stefan that you needed to get rid of it. Why were you holding the knife?

Because I pulled it out of Li’s back. I was trying to save him.

[sighs] OK. So now your fingerprints are all over the murder weapon.

I know, I know. I realize how stupid it was. But I–in the moment, I panicked.

Harris also told me that Li named you as his killer before he died. Why would he do that?

I don’t know. I don’t– maybe he was c-confused, d-delusional. All I know is that there must have been somebody else in that apartment. A-and whoever that was stabbed Li.

Did you see anyone exit?

They must have left right before I got there. Please, please, Rafe, you have to believe me. Please.

I believe you.

Thank you. Thank you. OK, well, that’s everything. Th-that’s–that’s everything that happened. So can I please go home now?

Gabi, you were accused of murder.

OK, but–so I’ll call a lawyer or something. I’ll make bail. I–

This is a very serious crime. I mean, all the evidence points to you. Honestly, this–this looks bad, really bad.

OK, so maybe you need to think about why that is.

Rafe, come on. I have been down this road before. Abigail lied on the stand, and I went to prison for a murder I didn’t commit.

So you’re saying that you’re being set up?

That is exactly what I’m saying. I am saying that somebody is framing me for killing Li.

OK, let’s start over. You said that you got a text from Li asking you to come over. What did he want?

Well, first of all, I–I mean, yes, I got a text from Li, but I don’t know if it was from him. It was from his phone, but it could have been anybody.

OK, can we just assume that it was Li? OK? Why did he ask you to come over?

Well, he always wanted me to come over to see him. He was obsessed with me.

Gabi, why did he want you to come over tonight?

[soft dramatic music]

Um, he was upset with me.

About? Gabi?

Does it even matter?

Yes, it matters!

[sighs] If you even want to have a chance of getting out of this, you need to tell me everything.

My wife didn’t do this.

If that’s true, then–

There is no if!

[panting] What I would like to know is why the hell the two of you are standing around in here instead of out there looking for the son of a bitch who really did this to Li?

OK, listen, I know you’re upset. There’s no reason to yell, especially at my partner. Why don’t you grab a cup of coffee or something?

What I’m gonna do, Detective, is get on the phone and call the best damn lawyer I can find.

Smart move, ’cause she’s gonna need it.

So you and Stefan enlisted Wilhelm Rolf, a fugitive wanted by this department, to convince Li that you’d been kidnapped by Megan DiMera?

Look, the plan was to get Li on tape confessing that he was trying to get Stefan killed.

Yeah, so you could use that tape and get his shares?

Yes, and–and he did sign over the shares to us. But then he texted me a few hours later saying that those shares were fake and that if I wanted the real ones I had to come over to talk to him alone.

Hm.

And then, when I got there– I told you what I saw. That is it. That’s the whole story.

So you created this whole scheme, this whole thing, just so you could screw over EJ DiMera?

All right, let’s hear it. What job have you come to offer me?

Ah, well, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I fired that snake Clint Rawlings. His position is available for your consideration.

You want me to be deputy mayor?

You’re available, qualified. You’d be doing important work.

[clears throat] Paulina, I’m flattered, but it’s a no.

Whoa, wait a minute. You don’t even want to think about it? I mean, come on, you served as mayor once.

It was a long time ago. And now my focus is on taking back DiMera.

[scoffs]

Uh, well, uh, allow me. Allow me to come at this a different way. Giovanni and Chanel, now, I’m sure you know that my beautiful baby girl and your handsome young boy have reconciled.

I am aware that they are giving it another go, and they have my total blessing.

Oh, mine too. Mine too. But, well, since they’re back together, that kind of makes us like a–a family. And certain members of your family have greatly disappointed you, while others, like me, are looking out for you.

I appreciate that.

Mm-hmm. And right now, you need a job. I need you to come work for me. Now, I’d say–I–I’d say that would be a win-win for the Price-DiMera family.

And so are you, EJ. Now, you’re a man who gets things done. You spent years running a multi-million dollar corporation. Now, that’s exactly the kind of experience I need in my administration. Now, all we have to do is just put our heads together and find a way to make this happen.

[sighs]

I won’t deny trying to manipulate Li for my own ends. But I had genuine feelings for him. And I am terribly sorry that he’s gone.

I don’t want your damn condolences.

Well, you have them. Not only am I sorry that you lost your brother, but I am sorry that I let my ambitions blind me from what could have been between us. I put my professional goals before my personal desires, and I truly regret that.

[soft dramatic music]

You’re telling me you think you two had a shot at an actual relationship?

Maybe. I mean, there was definitely a spark. And–and I’d– I’d like to believe that that really could have become something real. But now I’ll never know.

[cell phone rings]

Uh, Dr. Johnson. Thank you, uh, for letting me know.

[cell phone beeps] Uh, the police are done at the apartment if you want me to take you home.

I am definitely done.

[breathing shakily]

EJ–EJ screwed over Stefan first. He knew that his brother was brainwashed to hate me, and he said nothing.

So he could hold onto power?

Yeah. EJ wanted Stefan out of the office, but Li wanted Stefan dead. He tried to pull the plug. He tried to have him assassinated by Harris Michaels. He got what he deserved.

OK, this almost sounds like you’re justifying his murder.

No, I didn’t mean that he deserved to die. I meant that he deserved to lose his shares.

And you came up with an insane scheme to make that happen. Damn it, I told you to stay away from him.

Well, maybe I would have if he was in prison. But, no, he was out free, and he owned a piece of my husband’s company.

Right, so you did the sensible thing, which was to invent a kidnapping.

Well, I–I wouldn’t have done that if you would have done your job. You know, you didn’t get the confession out of Li, so I did what I had to do–

Oh, so this is my fault now?

I’m not saying it’s your fault.

You just said that!

I’m not blaming you. Can we please just not fight? I am scared out of my mind, and I need you on my side.

Then help me, Rafe! I can’t go back to prison, not– not after what happened the last time. I can’t, OK? And Arianna? I can’t put Arianna through that again. Please, I’m begging you. Please, you have to help me.

[sighs] So Li–Li named you in his killing, right?

OK, that does not help.

Well, actually, it might help you, OK? You blackmailed him, right? You blackmailed him so you could get his shares. How did that make him feel?

Well, what do you think? He was shocked. He was hurt.

And angry?

Very.

Right, right. Exactly. So he had motive to set you up.

For his murder? You’re–I–you think– you think that he would go this far to punish me?

You just said that he was obsessed with you. His obsession already had made him do crazy things. The guy–the guy was lonely. He was unstable. He was unemployed. And then when you and Stefan, you took those shares from him, I mean, maybe his whole life was just built on trying to get you back, and then when you did that to him, you humiliated him.

So he had somebody stab him in the back so that he could frame me?

In his sick mind, maybe it was poetic justice. You had taken everything from him–everything– except the ability for him to exact revenge.

So–so what, the– the final move in his life i-is gonna be to make sure that I am in prison for the rest of my life? You think a jury’s gonna buy that?

Well, not without proof.

So go find it.

I am going to try my best. But you need to prepare yourself for the possibility that that might not happen. I believe you, Gabi. I believe you are innocent. But as it stands now, it is gonna take a miracle to convince anyone else of that.

All right. Take this down to forensics. We already know Gabi’s prints are gonna be on the handle. And hopefully, with any luck, someone else’s will be too.

[sighs] Did you tell Rafe what happened?

Yeah, he wasn’t too happy about what we did to Li. But he believed me.

Well, that’s because he loves you. And he knows you’re telling the truth.

The evidence against me is pretty damning.

It is. But I have complete confidence that once the investigation is finished, you’ll be in the clear.

[laughs humorlessly] I hope so.

Hey. I know so. Like I told you before, I’m not gonna let anything bad happen to you.

I just wish I knew what actually happened. Someone tried to make it look like I killed Li. But I didn’t. So who did?

Look, we don’t have to do this. We can get a room at the Salem Inn or we can even stay at my dad’s.

No. I need to go inside. I just–I need to see it.
