THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

Ah, just the way you like it– three sugars and one of those tiny, probably expired half and half creamers.

Thank you.

While I was waiting for the coffee to heat up, I was kvelling over these photos of us we had taken in that booth at the Horton Town Scare. Frame-worthy, in my opinion– very flattering pictures of both of us.

Yes. You know, I have always said that I look my very best with a sheet over my head.

Well, even though you cannot see your amazingly beautiful face, you can still see your gorgeous, brown, almond eyes.

And the sheer panic in yours.

Yeah, it was pretty terrifying trying to make our way back here.

[chuckles]

But you know what, these photos will always remind us of what we did for love.

Right.

What were you looking at when I came in?

Something very, very interesting indeed.

Oh? Good interesting?

Definitely good. ,::, It appears that my sweet Aunt Gabi spent the night in the slammer after being arrested for murdering Li Shin.

[suspenseful music]

[door opens]

Hey. Hey, how are you feeling? I made you some tea.

No, thanks. Actually, I could probably let it steep a little bit longer since I’m not going into work.

Yeah, it must be pretty complicated with your boss being Gabi’s brother.

Okay, well, we’ll keep that in mind. Apparently, someone saw Leo and Dimitri skinny dipping in the park fountain this morning, but I’m guessing even Leo wouldn’t be that brazen.

If it wasn’t so cold, I might actually believe you. Any real leads or just these Bigfoot stories?

Nothing yet. Harris is out there beating the bush while I’m handling things here.

What about the forensics report on the knife?

Just got it here. So on the knife, Gabi’s prints were found on it, of course, as expected.

Well, yeah. Anything else?

Yes, it says here that her prints were not the only ones found.

Okay.

Hey. I brought you your favorite. Hazelnut latte, cinnamon scone.

My hero.

You’re not hungry? Starved, actually. I was just thinking I probably shouldn’t get used to Sweet Bits.

Hey, come on. Don’t think like that. You’re innocent. And Belle is the best damn attorney this state has ever seen. There is no way she’s gonna let you get convicted.

I know. I know she’s doing the best she can. But I just don’t think it’s gonna be enough, not with EJ as the new DA. I mean, he came in here last night with that imperious smirk on his face. I knew I was screwed.

[chuckles] Oh, you’d better believe it. That money-grasping little shrew should have thought twice before crossing me.

Well, well, well. Just the man I was looking for. I’ve come to talk to the newly minted DA.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Belle, I’ve been meaning to have a tête-à-tête with you. How are you holding up?

Holding up?

I heard that Shawn has left Salem, and I can only imagine how painful that is for you.

I’m fine. Thank you. I’m actually here to discuss business.

Oh? And what business would that be?

Well, I’ll be representing your sister-in-law, Gabriella DiMera.

Ah.

Hey, you don’t need to be thinking about EJ right now.

How can you say that? We just ousted him from DiMera, and now he’s the district attorney. I mean, if he wants to exact his revenge, yeah, he’s got a pretty surefire way to get it.

Okay. Is EJ gonna want retribution? Absolutely. But he’s no Michael Corleone. He’s chosen the law to wield his power. In other words, he’s bound by its limits. Now, in order to convict you, EJ’s gonna need proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And since you didn’t kill Li Shin, there’s no proof that you did.

[suspenseful music] Hey. The Salem PD, and let me remind you, that includes your brother, they will find who really killed Li Shin.

Someone else’s prints are on the knife?

Well, according to the report, there’s a positive print consistent with a hand larger than the one belonging to Gabriella DiMera. Oh.

What?

It’s Li Shin.

Oh.

Well, that jives with Wendy Shin’s statement that the weapon was one of their kitchen knives. She’d seen him earlier that evening when she came home from work and found him cooking dinner.

They didn’t find any other prints?

No–other than the ones that Wendy gave us to rule her out, none.

Well, it’s not looking good for Gabi.

I am plotzing over how juicy this Gabi story is. Get this– the woman double-crosses her gorgeous ex-husband and then murders him? Ah. This could have been Lady Whistleblower’s moment to pivot into that esteemed Truman Capote territory. Imagine me, martini in hand, yukking it up with the Park Avenue intelligentsia, the toast of the town. Oh, but alas, she is forced to watch from the sidelines, derelict in her duty.

All because of me.

If I hadn’t tried to fix the Gabi-Stefan problem, we would never be in this mess, and I am still so very sorry, Leo.

I know you are. But listen to me, Butch Cassidy, I will always be your Sundance Kid. And lucky for you, the universe did your bidding for you. Think about it: Gabi DiMera is facing God knows how many years in prison, her crestfallen beau, Stefan, blowing kisses to her through a jammed packed courthouse? What fate could be worse than that?

Uh, I don’t know, Leo. Look around–we’re fugitives holed up in this dingy motel room with cold water dribbling out of a shower head and a TV that only plays one infomercial, some sad woman hawking some cut-rate medallion. I swear, if we don’t get in touch with my mother and fast, I fear that this may very well become the days of our lives.

Okay, first off, that infomercial lady is a gay icon waiting to be discovered. And secondly– Hold the phone. Let’s not say au revoir to our Parisian vacay just yet.

What? What? What is it?

“Ms. DiMera led Mr. Shin to believe she’d been kidnapped “with the help of one…

[clears throat]

[in German accent] Dr. Wilhelm Rolf.”

[laughs]

Did you just say Rolf?

Uh-huh.

[both laugh]

Did you hear that, you hunky little doomsayer? Rolf is in Salem. We’re saved. No more playing amateur chemist/barista with this swill.

Darling, as much as I would love to upgrade us to a frothy cappuccino at a bijou café, I’m not quite sure that this news necessarily translates to a one-way ticket out of here.

What are you talking about? It says right here, Rolf was in Salem yesterday.

Yes, exactly. hours ago. Let’s not forget that Rolf is a wanted man, so unless he’s just wandering the corridors of some underground laboratory with a shrunken head, I’d say it’s safe to say that he’s already gone.

You’re probably right.

[knock at door] Oh, my God. What if it’s the police?

Mr. Von Leuschner? There’s no need to fear. It is I, Dr. Wilhelm Rolf.

[suspenseful music]

What about Melinda Trask?

Melinda Trask? Gabi, no. She wouldn’t. There’s no–

Wouldn’t she? I mean, crime of passion. I mean, she knows her way around the legal system like a London cab driver.

I don’t think–

No? Any news?

Any other suspects?

We just got back the forensics report on the knife.

Any prints?

Besides mine?

I can’t get into specifics, but so far, there’s nothing that clears you.

Oh, my God. You guys, I cannot go back to prison. Arianna, this is gonna break her heart. We were supposed to have a visit this month.

Hey, don’t go there. Don’t think about that right now. It is still very early on in the investigation. There’s still a lot of work to be done, right? Fingerprints to be swabbed, DNA to be processed, questionable alibis, right?

Yeah. Yeah. We’re working on that, actually, right now, trying to figure out exactly what happened. But unfortunately, there’s still no strong suspect for the murder of Li.

No one except me.

Ah, yes, I did hear that Gabi has retained you, but let me tell you something, barrister to barrister. This case, it’s open and shut, a loser. Your client is obviously guilty.

Well, you’ll just have to understand if I don’t take your word for it.

Because I’m prosecuting? Believe me, Belle, I am just trying to save you the blood, sweat, and tears of investing in this total waste of time. Because of the mountains of evidence stacked against Gabi, there’s no jury in their right mind who would vote not guilty. And of course, regardless of evidence, as a servant of the people of Salem, I will prosecute any defendant to the fullest extent of the law.

Wow, well, thank you for that very lawyerly sermon, but I’m not actually here to discuss your professional duties.

Oh, then why are you here? Unless you’ve heard about my recent nuptials? Did you bring me a gift?

[chuckles] Hardly. I’m actually here to discuss your very personal grudge against my client.

Rafe’s a good man, but he does love his sister, and he’s going to do everything he can to try to clear her, even though from where I’m standing, from where anyone’s standing, she looks mighty guilty.

[apprehensive music] You know, I can still see her standing there… Over Li’s body, the knife in her hand.

I’m so sorry that you had to see that.

Me too. But then when you realized that Li was still alive in the hospital, you know, I was hoping against hope that somehow he’d make it… And then I wouldn’t have– oh, my God. I still haven’t told my father. I need to call him. But it’s–it’s in the middle of the night in Hong Kong. Maybe I should wait.

Didn’t you tell me your dad keeps crazy hours? He does, but–

Wen. I know that this is the last thing you wanna do, but Li’s death has already hit the local news, and it’s only a matter of time before it’s on newsfeeds all across social media, okay? You don’t want your dad to find out about it that way, do you?

No, but– Tripp, how am I going to tell him?

You don’t have to do it alone, okay? I’m here.

[phone beeps]

Hello, Father.

Father, please listen. I have something important to tell you. No, it’s not about the new job. It’s about Li. No, it has nothing to do with the shares. Will you just listen to me, please? No, of course. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell. I just– I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I can’t do this.

Mr. Shin, this is Tripp Johnson. That’s right, Wendy’s young man. Um…

[clears throat] Listen, I hate to be the bearer of awful news, but, uh, Mr. Shin, your son has died.

[somber music]

All right, look, just because there was no evidence found on the murder weapon doesn’t mean that evidence doesn’t exist out there. I mean, the killer had to have left something behind, be it shoe prints, security camera footage, something. I mean, you guys are working on that, right?

Yeah, we’re working on that right now.

I know. I know that you are. But the evidence is not gonna matter, not as long as EJ is the one that’s prosecuting me. Now that this opportunity fell onto his lap, he’s gonna do everything he can to make this into a show trial to punish me for what we did to him.

Okay, Gabi, yes, EJ is hell-bent on revenge, and that is why we cannot give up. Now, Belle seems to believe that we can use EJ’s personal vendetta against him. We can make a very strong case for a conflict of interest, which will result in the charges being dropped and the case dismissed.

Really?

Really.

[apprehensive music] That’s why she didn’t come with me this morning. She’s talking to EJ right now.

Do you think I’m prosecuting Gabi out of some personal animus?

Oh, I don’t just think it. You see, I just had a conversation with Stefan and Gabi, and they let me know that they are now in possession of all of your DiMera shares, and I know you didn’t like that. And so now you’re using your new professional position as DA to exact revenge on them, which also makes a mockery of our judicial system. And you know what, EJ, that really pisses me off.

Belle. Belle, you wound me. Mayor Price offered me the DA’s office long before I had any inkling that Gabi had been arrested. And if you’re so convinced that I’m engaged in some kind of witch hunt, how do you explain the rather compelling evidence against her?

What evidence?

Must I enumerate it? The victim’s sister discovered Gabi standing over him holding onto a knife covered in his blood. Not to mention, two eyewitnesses overheard Gabi and her husband…

Your brother.

Discussing destroying said evidence.

Hmm, is that it?

[tense music]

That’s quite enough, I think, wouldn’t you say?

I would think it’s enough if it wasn’t completely circumstantial and totally refutable.

Come now, Belle.

Because my client told me when she found Li Shin, he had already been stabbed, and she actually took that knife right out of him in an effort to save his life.

[laughing]

Oh, maybe next time Gabi so casually wanders in on a murder victim, she ought to call the police right away, because from both a medical and legal standpoint, that– that was a big mistake.

Well, either way, it’s hardly a smoking gun.

Well, bloody knife.

You know, EJ, you may be smug as hell and imperious, but you’re no idiot, and I know that. And we both know that you don’t have enough evidence for a murder conviction, so if you have any interest in not making a complete embarrassment of yourself with your very first case, I would suggest you drop the charges right now.

Doctor, thank God you’re here.

I got word that you were trying to track me down.

But how?

[gasps] Was it the cleaning lady? The weird-looking one who I’m pretty sure stole my boba tea punch card? Is she keeping tabs on us?

The truth is, I simply connected my geolocator to the nearest cell tower.

You know, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you’re here now, Doctor, and I’m assuming that you’re not planning to stick around Salem for long, so I’d like to humbly request that when you do leave, you’ll be taking us with you. I assure you, my mother will take care of all of the necessary accommodations.

You know, Dimitri, your mother was very disappointed when you lost the inheritance promised in the von Leuschner codicil. After she took a rather sudden leave from Salem, she comforted herself with the knowledge that she would be set up for life, said it would be easy for her. She was counting on you, her beloved son, to claim that fortune, only to see you bungled the entire operation by falling in love.

So does that mean you won’t be helping us?

As I said, your mother was none too happy when you lost your claim to the von Leuschner fortune. It was, after all, a pretty penny. And yet, despite her crushing disappointment, you are her son. And as such, she is, of course, willing to help you.

Oh, thank God. You had me shook there for a second, Dr. Strangelove.

I’m glad to know that I can always count on my mother.

Your mother, she’s got a big heart. She would do anything for her family. And Dimitri, her one and only son, is family to her, of course.

Of course. And Leo here is family to me, good doctor.

Ah, but not to your mother.

What are you trying to say?

I’m trying to say that Mother Megan would be more than happy to aid and abet your escape, so long as you don’t bring your plus-one.

[suspenseful music]

Rafe just updated me on the forensics. Gabi, I’m so sorry. I really wish that would have been better news.

Yeah, you and me both. So what happened with EJ?

Yeah, any success talking some sense into my thick-skulled brother?

I’m afraid not. I tried to, but he refused to drop the charges.

Can’t say I’m surprised. He’s got me right where he wants me, why would he give that up?

Okay, this is a setback, nothing more. All right, so here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna go to your arraignment, right, we’re gonna pay your bail. And you’re gonna come home, and you’re gonna spend the night in your bed, our bed, right next to me. Okay?

Actually, that might not be possible.

Why?

Because EJ made it very clear that he’s gonna ask the judge to deny your bail.

Wait, why would he do that?

Well, considering that your husband’s family owns a private jet, I think he’s gonna make the case that you’re a flight risk.

My husband’s family, are you kidding me? EJ is a card-carrying member of that family.

And I don’t think that the irony is lost on him, but that’s not gonna deter him, because EJ is a man on a mission, and he has every intention of throwing the book at you.

Of course, Mr. Shin, Wendy will be in touch. And again, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Thank you.

[apprehensive music] I don’t know why, it’s just– the words, I couldn’t say them.

Your father knows now. That’s all that matters. How did he take it?

Well, he seemed pretty stoic.

That’s my father. Don’t show your feelings ever. Not even if your son has died.

In his defense, I’m not sure he was feeling anything. It sounded more like, uh…

Like what?

Like he was in shock. He couldn’t believe it happened.

I know the feeling.

[crying]

Dr. Rolf, I’m afraid you’re just gonna have to find another seat on the sub, because Leo and I are a packaged deal.

I’m sorry, Dimitri, but your mother was quite clear in her instructions. I’m to bring you and only you. She’ll be very displeased at the sight of this riff-raff.

[gasps] I’m riff-raff? Well, I will have you know, I took an online German course so I could watch “Das Boot” without the subtitles. Great film, by the way. So halt dee schnauze and leck mich am arsch!

Yeah. Yeah. What he said. So you just let me deal with my mother, just make sure that that sub is ready and waiting.

Very well.

[suspenseful music]

Well, that may have been the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen. It’s like if “Casablanca” took place on Fire Island.

Well, the funniest, sweetest, smartest, most fashionable man that I have ever met is leaving Salem behind for me. It’s probably the least that I can do. But Leo, are you sure that you wanna do this? Because this isn’t just leaving Salem behind, this is leaving your whole life forever. And once we get on that sub, I’m afraid there’s no turning back.

[soft music]

I know. And sure, there will be things I’ll miss. My morning cruller at Sweet Bits. My therapist, Joanne, who most certainly won’t be in network anymore. And of course, I will miss my esteemed position in the fourth estate. Who could ever forget Lady Whistleblower, her adoring fans waiting on her every last word? But I suppose this is ta-ta for now. Or forever, I guess. But Dimitri, my future is with you, wherever that may be.

Even if it’s on the run?

Mm-hmm. Don’t you know by now? I will follow you anywhere.

I’m so sorry to bother you. I know you’ve been through a lot, but I just have a few other questions, a few points that I wanted to clarify.

Sure.

You said that when you came home from work, you saw Li holding the knife. That’s right. He was making dinner.

And what kind of mood would you say that he was in?

[suspenseful music]

Well, he was really upset about Gabi having tricked him out of his DiMera shares.

So you’re saying he was angry, perhaps emotionally unstable?

Yeah, he was angry. Well, I think that’s appropriate, considering the circumstances, don’t you?

Wendy, I only am trying to get an idea of his state of mind.

Why? What are you suggesting, Detective? That my brother killed himself in order to frame Gabi?

All I want is a clear picture of the facts.

Yeah, the kind that will clear Gabi. Gee, I wonder. This has nothing to do with the fact that you’re seeing Gabi’s brother, does it?

Wendy, I promise you, all I want is to get and find the truth. I want to bring your brother’s killer to justice, whoever that is.

[phone ringing] I’m sorry, I have to take this. Detective Hunter. You do? Got it. I’ll head over there now.

I know you said that EJ was gonna try to talk to the judge so he could deny me bail, but I didn’t think he’d actually go for it.

You don’t think about it for another second, okay. We can always file an appeal, right?

Yeah, and we can ask for another judge, too, Gabi. We are gonna fight this with everything, and I mean everything, we have.

Ah, no matter how many times I’ve witnessed it, I never get tired of this country’s glorious legal system. What about you, Gabriella? I bet you’re feeling patriotic watching jurisprudence in action.

You sick son of a bitch. Gabi didn’t do this, and you know it.

[laughs] Apparently my brother isn’t as enamored of the legal system as I am. I told you I’d make you both pay.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey. What the hell are you doing? No.

[whistles] Thank you, Commissioner. Your allegiance to law and order is commendable. And since you’ve extended me the courtesy, I shall do the same. Good luck in Statesville.

Here, it’s herbal, some lavender something with a little bit of citrus. I thought you might need that after that visit with Jada.

Yeah, you know, it probably wasn’t the best idea to bring out all of my frustrations and grief on one of my new bosses. I’ll probably end up with the shortest career in the history of the Salem PD.

[phone chimes]

[apprehensive music]

What is it?

Gabi’s been denied bail.

We need to arrange your transport to Statesville.

Do you know how long I’m gonna be there before the trial?

I don’t know. I don’t like it. I promise you– I promise you, I’m gonna find out whoever did this. You are not gonna be punished for a crime you didn’t commit.

Thank you. Salem is very lucky to have a man as honorable as you as commissioner.

Well… I’m just doing my job, princess. I’m not doing it as commissioner, I’m– I’m doing it as your brother. That’s the promise I’m making to you. I love you.

I love you.

Don’t worry, though. Don’t worry, okay? Listen, listen. I’m getting you out of there before you know it. All right?

Okay.

Okay.

Excuse me, Mr. District Attorney.

Counselor, what can I do you for?

Oh, well, you can skip the pleasantries for starters. I just wanted to let you know that I’m gonna be appealing the judge’s decision.

And I wouldn’t expect anything less from such a venerated attorney.

You know, EJ, I hope you’re proud of yourself for, among other things, doing irreparable damage to your relationship with your brother.

Oh, no. Did I do something to offend him? Let’s not forget, Belle, that my so-called brother attacked me.

I’m not talking about what happened in the police station. Although, I can’t really blame Stefan for what he did. I’m talking about what you just did in that courtroom.

As in making sure an alleged murderer isn’t wandering the streets of this fine township?

All right, you know what, EJ? You can hide behind your fancy new title, but we both know how you’re using it– how you’re weaponizing it against Gabi and Stefan. It’s purely punitive and personal. And while you may be basking in the victory at this moment, I just want you to know it’s not gonna last. Stefan will retaliate, and you know it, and I know it. And so while you may have just won this battle, honey, this war has just begun.

[suspenseful music]

Baby girl, I just– yes, I wanted to–yes. And I wanted to let you know that I am innocent, okay, and Belle is gonna prove that. And you know what, the first thing I’m gonna do when I’m free is, I’m gonna come see you, okay? Yeah. You take care of yourself, my precious baby girl. And I love you, and I miss you so much. And please say hi to your dad. Yeah, okay. You too. Yeah.

Hey. Rafe wants me to let you know the transport’s waiting for you outside.

I thought he was gonna come with me.

He is. He just wanted to give us a moment alone.

Right.

Did you talk to Ari?

Yeah, told her everything, and she’s being very brave.

You’re a good mama.

I don’t feel very brave right now.

Okay, don’t focus on that. You need to focus on, you are innocent, this will be over soon, and you will be a free woman. But until then, I need you to remember one thing: you are Gabriella Hernandez DiMera… The strongest, bravest, fiercest, most badass woman I know. Statesville’s got nothing on you.

Yeah, you know, if I got you back after being dead for four years, I think that I can handle a little vacation at a decidedly less than four star hotel.

And you’re gonna be back home before you know it. This is just a detour. We’ll be sitting on the couch watching a crappy reality TV show, stuffing our faces with paella, so much paella our pants won’t fit anymore, okay?

What about wreaking havoc on our enemies?

You bet your ass.

[both laugh]

[soft music] I love you, Gabi DiMera.

I love you Stefan DiMera. Don’t you ever forget that.

You really gotta bring all that conditioner?

Yes, I’m bringing all that conditioner. Do you have any idea the parabens and whatever else are in European cosmetics? They’re practically sentient.

[phone beeps]

Okay.

[in German accent] Ah, it appears the sub is ready and waiting.

Well, well, then what are we waiting for? Let’s blow this pop stand. Ready?

[tense music]
