Can you just–I’m sorry– hold that thought real quick? I’m expecting to hear from the judge in Leo Stark’s case.

What’s going on with that?

Oh, well, I filed a motion this morning to have the murder charges dropped ahead of his arraignment.

[eerie music]

Well, first of all, it’s not a good morning at all. It is a miserable, sucky morning, but more importantly, I’m not speaking with you without my attorney present.

Oh, that’s fine. You don’t need to talk. I just wanted to let you know that I am going to absolutely relish throwing the book at you at the arraignment today. And I assume you’ve also been warned that, in addition to being charged with aiding abetting a wanted fugitive, you’re also being charged with the murder of my infant son.

Look, I am really sincerely sorry for what happened to your baby.

I thought you weren’t going to talk.

Well, I need to say this because I delivered that baby, and I’m heartsick that he didn’t make it. But that aside, my attorney has told me there is no way you can get this murder charge to stick.

Oh, I can. And I will. And that means you, Leo, my dear friend, are going to spend the rest of your miserable life behind bars.

[tense percussive music]

So EJ had to go to work, huh?

Yeah, he got a hearing about the Leo Stark case.

Oh, that’s too bad because I was hoping to talk to both of you guys.

[sighs] Well, I’ve been thinking a lot about the conversation we had last night, about the baby. I mean, I’m guessing you still believe that Sloan and Eric’s son is actually yours?

I do. And between us, I let EJ think that I’m letting go because I know that he’s convinced that this is some kind of denial or magical thinking, but, honey, I’m telling you, when I held him in my arms, I could feel it in my heart. I knew who he was. I knew that he was my son. I just–just wish there was a way I could prove it.

Maybe you can.

What do you mean?

Mom, I went to see Eric last night. And he agreed to have a DNA test done on the baby.

[gentle music]

No, no. It’s okay. I’m just glad someone finally agrees with me about this whole Holly thing. So you agree that she doesn’t have a crush on EJ?

She doesn’t, at least, uh, not anymore. She told me she’s, uh, completely over him.

Uh, Eric said he made an appointment for today. I’m guessing we just need a DNA sample from either you or EJ.

Oh, it actually– it wasn’t from the judge. But it was about Leo’s case, and, uh, I’m so sorry, but I have to go deal with it.

Yeah, sure. Listen. Um, about Holly’s idea and Nicole and the baby–

Whatever you guys wanna do to make sure that she accepts the truth is fine by me, okay?

Sloan told me the felony murder rule doesn’t apply in my situation because your baby died at the hospital, which happened after Dimitri and I were fleeing the police, not during the actual crime.

[snickers] She tried to spin the story the same way with me. But it’s not accurate, is it? Because my son died of injuries sustained in the accident you and Dimitri caused, which means you are still very much responsible.

No, that can’t be right. Sloan would have mentioned that.

Mm, and I assume the reason she didn’t is because she was hoping to convince me to drop the charges based on her flimsy interpretation. She tried to, uh, sell it to the judge as well, who will, undoubtedly, not approve of her motion to get the murder charge dismissed, seeing how the doctor who treated my son gave a statement saying that his death was a direct result of your actions. Face it, Stark. You’re screwed.

[ominous music]

So how am I involved in this thing you’re supposed to do?

Well, I’m not sure if you heard, but I caused some damages at my old school that my dad is making me pay for, so–

Yeah. I did hear that.

[clears throat] Yeah. That’s how I got this gig picking up dirty dishes. But at the rate my uncle Roman is paying me, I’m gonna be working off this debt until I’m his age. So I’ve been looking desperately for a second job, and I was hoping, maybe, I could work at your bakery.

Uh, sure. We could use the help. Um, I will send you an application.

I am about to go on break. We could walk over right now, and I’ll fill one out. Sorry, I’m just anxious to get the ball rolling.

[laughs] No, yeah, and I-I hear you on that, Tate, but, um, Chanel and I haven’t even eaten yet, so.

Okay, call me a biased auntie, but that is one gorgeous baby.

Yeah, he’s a keeper.

Yeah. So tell me, what’s his name gonna be?

Well, Sloan and I haven’t had a chance to kind of come up with a name quite yet. So I kind of keep resorting to, like, “Champ” and “Big Guy” and “Kiddo,” sometimes maybe even a “Hey, You.”

Yeah, well–

So tell me, what are you and Little Champ doing here?

Well, like I said in the text, I just wanted to see if it was possible to get a DNA test.

Of course. For the purposes of genetic testing, right?

Yeah, maybe somewhere down the road, but, I mean, right now I think, um, it’s more to prove that my cowboy here is my son and not EJ and Nicole’s son.

[sighs] But how did my actions cause the accident? I wasn’t the one who was driving.

Oh, I’m well-aware that it was your boyfriend, Dimitri. But, unfortunately, he is not here to face the consequences. You are. So unless you know where I can find him…

I don’t. I swear.

[sucks teeth] Then I guess it’s on you to carry the burden.

That’s not fair.

[tense music]

Don’t you dare talk to me about fair. What’s not fair is that my innocent child’s life was cut short thanks to you and my nephew. What’s not fair is that he barely had a chance to live. And now his mother is going to grieve and suffer for the rest of her life!

I know that. And, again, I am so, so sorry. But it was an accident. It was a terrible accident. No one ever intended for anyone to get hurt.

It doesn’t matter what you intended. All I have to prove is that you committed a crime, which directly led to the death of my son.

EJ, I did everything I could to try and save him. I delivered him with my own two hands. I saw the miracle of his birth. And after Dimitri rushed him to the hospital, I stayed with Nicole. I did not leave her side until help arrived. Doesn’t that count for anything?

No. No. Because in the end, my son is still dead.

I can explain about Leo.

You lied to me, Sloan. You stood on that very spot last night and you told me that you could convince EJ to drop the murder charges.

I tried my best. I built a strong case. He just wouldn’t listen.

Okay, well, that still leaves Leo on the hook for the murder of a child who is still very much alive and living in your apartment!

Look. I am far from being done on fighting to free Leo. I filed a motion this morning with the judge to have the murder charges thrown out. And I have high hopes that he will listen to reason.

That’s just not good enough, Sloan. You see, you didn’t hold up your end of the bargain. And now I have no choice but to call Nicole and tell her all about how you stole her baby.

Look, I know you’re upset that Leo’s still facing murder charges. But telling Nicole the truth isn’t gonna set your boyfriend free.

Is that right? How do you figure that? Because the way I see it, EJ has to drop the murder charges if he finds out that the kid isn’t actually dead.

Leo is still gonna be facing charges for a litany of other crimes. And, uh, like I said, we could be hearing back from the judge any minute now that he’s dropped the charges based on the motion I filed this morning. Maybe he already has. Oh, look at that, a missed call and a voicemail. Maybe this is some good news.

Thank you, Your Honor. I’ll see you later today in court.

What did he say?

Oh, as expected, the judge denied Sloan’s motion. The murder charge stays.

[dark music]

Well, what did the judge say?

I’m sorry, Dimitri.

Well, that’s it then. I’m telling Nicole everything.

No, please, you can’t.

The hell I can’t! Sloan, I am not letting Leo go away for murder.

He won’t. I promise you. In fact, I’ll– I can guarantee it. I can guarantee that Leo will walk, okay? But there’s just one thing that you have to do to ensure that.

You have to turn yourself in.

[groans] Damn it. He’s not picking up, and I guess he’s not gonna call back.

[sighs] Okay. You know what? We should just get to the hospital.

[phone beeps]

No. Uh, it’s nothing. A friend texted about meeting up, and it’s kind of a big deal, but don’t worry, it can wait.

Honey, I can go to the hospital on my own.

Poor Nicole, believing this is her baby.

Which is why Holly came up with the idea to get the DNA test, to help her mom, you know, come to terms with the truth.

Well, it’s very kind of and Sloan to agree to all this.

I haven’t really had a chance to mention this to Sloan. Do I need her permission?

No. No. Just one parent needs to sign off.

Okay, good, because Sloan is getting very uncomfortable with Nicole claiming that this is her child.

[phone beeps] Well, then she should be very relieved when the results come out, huh?

Well, you seem to be forgetting that EJ is incredibly dangerous, and he is going to torture and punish Leo and hold him responsible for your crimes. And since Leo’s already admitted to much of what he’s done, he is going to prison. Is that what you want? Maybe for the rest of his life.

Well, then… what we need to do is make a trade with EJ, give him what he really wants, which is your head on a platter, since, after all, it was you driving when his pregnant wife was behind the wheel of that car when she got in the accident. I guess the real question here is, how much does Leo mean to you? Do you love him enough to sacrifice yourself in order to save him?

Dimitri loves me with all his heart. And contrary to popular belief, it’s actually quite big. Along with some other big and magical body parts.

Mm, and yet, here you sit while he’s probably off on some yacht somewhere enjoying the good life, flaunting those big and magical body parts and never looking back. Some great love affair.

Our love affair was real. It still is.

To you, perhaps, but to my nephew, your epic love story was nothing but a temporary diversion, and now you’re all alone.

I just spoke to Dimitri Von Leuschner. He’s willing to turn himself in, EJ, as long as you drop all charges against Leo Stark.

I am gonna take these samples to the lab right now.

Well, if we’re lucky, we’ll get the results back within the hour.

But I couldn’t afford to pay him either, so the interest accrued, and before I knew it, it was twice as much as the money I had borrowed from Victor.

So what does any of this have to do with little Victoria?

I’m getting to that. I think this man or one of his associates took the baby. They must have thought that they could use the child as some sort of leverage.

And as it turned out, they were right. My God, this is unconscionable.

Sure is. But Konstantin, I’m wondering… If this kidnapping is connected to you and this huge debt you couldn’t pay back, why did you wait until now to say anything?

Eric and Sloan adopted a baby boy today, a newborn, and I ran into Eric at the pub, and I asked if I could hold him, and that’s when I knew he was mine.

Did you say anything to Eric about it?

Of course, I did. And I told EJ, but neither one of them believed me. Honey, I know this– I know how this sounds, but it’s the truth. The baby that Eric and Sloan adopted, I gave birth to. He’s my baby boy.

Sloan Peterson, what the hell do you want?

To offer my condolences, first of all. I’m sorry for the loss of your child.

An accident that Leo is not at fault for. And as far as you trying to make the felony murder charge stick, your son was alive when he arrived at that hospital, meaning that he did not die during the commission of a crime.

Well, I’m obviously glad that you can be chill about Everett since I do work with him now, but it just– it feels like a . So I wonder what’s changed.

Well, maybe he’s like one of those firefighters who starts fires just so he can put them out and play the hero.

So you’re thinking that Konstantin arranged to have Sarah’s baby kidnapped?

Yeah, so he could come to the rescue. Listen, you know that I put him on notice the other day. I told him I had my eye on him, and I thought he was a liar. So maybe he figured if he saved your daughter, he could do no wrong in Maggie’s eyes ever again.

I hate watching you sucking up to poor little innocent Maggie who has no idea that you’re after her money. I just–I’m sick over it.

Oh, get off your high horse. You are doing the– the exact same thing! After all, we both know you’re only after Alex to get your hands on his inheritance.

And I have explained to him that we aren’t even in a relationship, but he seems to think that it’s highly suspicious that we are living and working together.

I see. So why is our relationship or lack thereof any of his damn business?

And that’s what I would like to know.

I–that’s kind of extreme, don’t you think? Konstantin faking a kidnapping because he’s worried that you’re on to him for lying about a tablecloth? Not to mention the risk if he was caught.

Yeah. But I got to tell you, this whole story just doesn’t sit right with me. I mean, think about it. The dude is a senior citizen, right? And from what you told me, the minute he volunteers to watch your little girl, he gets knocked out from behind.

Well, it could have been Maggie or Sarah. Thankfully, it wasn’t.

Sure, it could have been, but it wasn’t either one of them, was it? It was Konstantin. And then after being knocked out, this senior citizen leaps up, runs like the wind to chase down and locate this supposed kidnapper. Then he finds and subdues the kidnapper, retrieves the baby, but loses the perp. And in the process, he conveniently forgets what they look like. He can’t even remember one identifying feature.

Well, he had been knocked out.

Had he been?

[scoffs]

And what was the motive, huh, for this mysterious kidnapper?

The–the police said that there was probably going to be a ransom demand.

But there wasn’t any evidence of that. As a matter of fact, basically there was no evidence at all. You said so yourself– no suspect, no prints, no sign of forced entry, nothing on the security footage. And yeah, I am inclined to be suspicious because I already think the guy’s bad news.

I think he’s charming,

Oh, Kayla, please.

Well, sorry, Steve, so do I. And look, I will admit, you know, when he first came here, and he was getting close with my mom, I felt like he was getting too close too quickly. He was giving her gifts and showering her with compliments. And so when she said that she was going to invite him to stay through Christmas, I told her to be careful. But now–

Wait, wait, wait. When did you tell her this? Do you remember?

Um, well, it was the day that Victoria was kidnapped.

OK. Well, do you think that Konstantin could have been hiding in the wings, listening in on your conversation?

OK. So when he rescued Victoria, did your feelings about him change? About him and your mom, about him staying for Christmas?

Well, yeah, of course. I mean I just told you how indebted to him I am.

OK. So if that was his grand plan, I’d say it worked like a charm.

Just out of the blue, you came to your senses, and now you’re just fine with everything?

Just that things have been, um, rocky between us lately, and I was worried that Everett would– would… take an opportunity because of that. But I know that I can’t– I can’t–I can’t blame people for my mistakes, and–and which is why I had to do something about it. I need to take responsibility for my actions. It’s that I– I want us to– I want to–I want to fix– I want to fix this. I want to–I want to– I want to fix what’s going on with us. I do want us to get back to living that wonderful life that we had before. If that’s what you want too.

Your partner? But I thought Miss Rizczech left town, that she was no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of the paper.

Well, she isn’t. I didn’t think Gwen even still read the paper, but apparently she does. And when she saw that editorial you did lionizing Leo Stark, well, I mean, she and Leo were best of friends once upon a time, but his most recent betrayal is still very raw for her. Therefore, your piece really upset her. Therefore, she called me, demanding that I let you go.

And therefore you had to give in to that demand?

Well, look, my history with Gwen is complicated, and this whole partner situation is tenuous at best.

Right. Well, I was just finishing up another piece defending Leo Stark. So am I safe to assume–

You are. Yes, it will never see the light of day. Look, I really am terribly sorry, Everett, about everything.

I don’t believe you.

Look, I–I hear what you’re saying, but I do genuinely like the guy, and he has made my mom so happy. And I know that you’re skeptical, but if he really did save my little girl, then I am obviously beyond grateful to him.

Which is exactly what he was counting on. Sarah, I don’t mean to scare you, but your mother is a grieving widow. She recently inherited a fortune, which makes her vulnerable to predators. And if Konstantin has money problems back in Greece, and if he’s willing to do something as brazen as staging a kidnapping in your home–

Well, if he did fake this kidnapping and he had a partner in crime, I mean, who the hell is it?

I don’t know, but I intend to find out.

Forgive me if I overstepped, but I heard this woman came to Salem recently and immediately moved in on and in with Alexander here, and I was– since it coincided with this sudden windfall, I was concerned and– for her motives.

Well, you don’t need to be. For one thing, Theresa and I started spending time together before any of us had a clue that I was Victor’s son.

Is that right?

Yes, it is. And in the interest of full disclosure, yes, maybe I… would have chased a guy for his money, have chased a guy for his money in the past. But it’s not something I would do now because I have too much self-respect.

She’s come a long way since then, and I’m very proud of her.

[sighs] Well, thank you, Maggie. And you know what? Look at Alex. Who wouldn’t want him just the way he is?

Well, I’m sure Maggie would quibble with you about just the way I am, but–

You know what I mean. It’s like we’ve been going through the motions of a relationship, keeping it superficial, instead of dealing with the whole commitment and relationship goals thing.

I know. I know. I know. Which is why I– I thought that maybe it would be good for us to be alone tonight, just you and me. So while Thomas and Charlotte are with Doug and Julie having a sleepover, you and I can start working on those relationship goals. Before that, though, maybe we can just try to enjoy each other.

Well, instead of this warpath that we’ve been on with each other, we’ve just realized that what’s most important is that we both care about our daughter and each other.

[sighs] Maggie, thank you for understanding that my suspicions only come from the deepest concern for your family.

I just got back from Greece, and I talked to a whole lot of people who told me a very different story about your history with Victor Kiriakis.

You flew all the way to Greece to try to dig up dirt about me?

But your dad and I are gonna share a turkey dinner as soon as he gets back from Greece. I-I don’t know when he’s coming back. Your guess is as good as–ah. well, lo and behold, he’s here right now, Joey.

[laughs]

Got all the food wrapped up and one of everything put aside for your mom.

[sighs] Everett needs to talk to the crossword guy about making these things a little easier. I mean, a six-letter word for a large North American gallinaceous bird. Who would even know something like that?

Um, well, Victoria and I wanted to stop by and give you a little surprise, hopefully something to be grateful for.

Mm. Kid, wow. It feels like only yesterday where I was fixing him a plate so that the peas wouldn’t touch the mashed potatoes. Now he’s too busy to hang out with his mom unless it’s a national holiday.

Yeah, I’m crazy about him too. I’m actually really pleased with how he’s adjusted to life in Salem.

Speaking of adjustments, um, how are you and your dad? Are you still calling him Justin?

I’m calling him Dad. Even so, him not being my real father, um, I guess it’s made things a little awkward between us. But he’s a great guy, and we love each other a lot. He actually invited me to Arizona to spend Thanksgiving with Bonnie and my brothers.

Oh, yeah? Why’d you turn him down?

I just didn’t want to make everybody feel, like, uncomfortable, given what we just learned. I don’t know, maybe I should have just braved and gone, but I know family is important.

No arguments there.

[laughs] Speaking of family, I should probably go check in on Maggie. She has got to be completely shook, Sarah even more so. I mean, can you believe somebody kidnapped her baby?

[sighs]

I am telling you, the people at home do not know what they are missing. Wait until I tell them about sausage stuffing.

And you are a gift to me, Maggie. I am so grateful that you have invited me to join in your family for the holidays.

Well, I was delighted you were here and so was Sarah. But the idea of Thanksgiving is at least a little familiar to you, yes?

‘Cause, I mean, Victor told me about this ancient Greek, um– it was like a religious festival that was called, um, Thesmophoria. Did I–did I say that right?

You said it perfectly, a celebration of the harvest.

Oh, in which only women partake?

Mm-hmm.

You see, Demeter was the goddess of agriculture, and she had a daughter. “Per-se-feen.”

Persephone.

Oh, okay, all right, one out of two.

And Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, or so the myth says. And when mother and daughter were allowed to visit, he would bless the world with a bountiful harvest.

Ah, well, sadly, that kidnapping part, it hits a little too close to home. both: Mm.

[ominous music]

Ah, perhaps you are someone who can kidnap a kid, as long as the pay day is big enough, hmm?

Oh, what’s Greek for “the pot calling the kettle black”?

I am not the one who pretends to have any scruples. My aim here is crystal clear.

Yeah, to get your grubby hands on Maggie’s money.

That old bastard, Victor, made a grave mistake cutting me out of his will. And I will take what I am owed now from his widow, which I can only accomplish if this child’s mother is in my corner.

I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t saved my granddaughter. I know I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. You’re a real hero, Konstantin.

No, I am not, Maggie. I have done something truly terrible to you.

So what, you can’t write the story on your own?

Uh, no, I can, and I will. The profile is all mine, but now that our star columnist has been charged with murder, I’m gonna need Steph’s help to draft “The Spectator’s” official response.

Okay, great, just say that– uh, that Leo Stark is getting exactly what he deserves. I just freed up your whole evening. How about that?

Chad.

What? What, are you kidding? Leo and my swine of a nephew drove a very pregnant Nicole off the road. Now you can draw a straight line from that to her baby’s death.

Whoa.

So can the police.

It’s–it’s a little more complicated than that.

How so?

Well, Leo and Dimitri didn’t deliberately drive Nicole off the road, okay? It was an unfortunate accident, and, on top of it, Leo Stark helped deliver Nicole’s baby.

He had no choice; they were in the middle of nowhere, and she went into labor. And if Leo and Dimitri hadn’t been fleeing from the police, then my brother’s child would still be alive. So how ’bout you stop making excuses for that son of a bitch? Stephanie, surely, you’re with me on this one, yeah?

Victoria’s birth certificate.

Yeah, there’s been a small update in box A, where it says “Father’s name.” And it used to say “Rex Brady.”

You changed it to mine.

Well, it’s only right. You are her father, and now it’s official.

Thank you, Sarah. That–that means a lot.

I just– I wanted to show you how much I want you to be a part of our daughter’s life. And… I am just so sorry it took her being kidnapped to realize that.

It just boggles the mind, right, how somebody could break into that house in broad daylight, no less, and steal an innocent baby.

[sighs] Yeah, well. The good news is is that she was found and returned safe and sound.

Yeah, that’s right, thanks to Uncle Vic’s old friend, Konstantin.

Mm-hmm. Yeah, really fortunate that he was there and able to find her.

Right, thank God. You know, now might be a good time to pop in and check on Maggie.

Really? I’m kind of surprised that you’d be up for that. I-I thought that things were kind of strained between you two ever since you took over Titan.

We’ve had our issues, yeah. But out of respect for my father, I think I should be helping his widow. That’s what he would want. Why don’t you come along with me? I’m sure Maggie would love to see you.

[both laugh] So tell me, tell me, how was Greece? Um, were you and John able to uncover any new information about Konstantin?

Yeah, as a matter of fact, we were. And it looks like Maggie’s new friend has an allergy.

To what?

To the truth.

Look, I’m not a fan of Leo either, and I’m not defending him. But Everett hired me to protect the reputation of the newspaper. And right now, that means doing damage control on a very dicey situation.

So that means ignoring the fact that Leo is responsible for– at least partly responsible for the death of a newborn baby? My brother and Nicole are going through hell right now because of him.

And we are respectful of that.

Hmm.

But I hope that you can respect that this is also part of my job.

It’s Thanksgiving. You have to go tonight? Really?

Well, the way newspapers work is we need to issue a statement for tomorrow’s edition. So it’s not really the sort of thing you can kick down the road.

Everett’s right. We can’t put this off, unfortunately. But I will be home as soon as I can, okay? Okay?

Mm-hmm. Okay, yeah, no problem.

You already confronted Konstantin about this supposed antique tablecloth he gave Maggie, didn’t you?

I did, and he had all kinds of excuses for why he lied to Maggie. But John and I found out that he was lying about a lot more than that.

Like what?

Konstantin told Maggie that Victor loaned him the money to start his restaurant and that Victor refused to let him pay him back.

That doesn’t sound like Victor.

No, that’s because it was a big fat Greek lie. Now John and I interviewed several locals, and they all corroborated the same rumor. Victor loaned Konstantin the money but insisted that he get paid back. And Konstantin had trouble making the payments over the years, so no surprise, it caused a big rift between the two men.

Why would Konstantin lie about something like that?

An interesting tradition, a holiday all about giving thanks.

It’s a great tradition, actually. Although, I usually have to badger the family to say what it is they’re grateful for during the toast.

[laughs] I’m sure Victor would have loved that.

You knew him well. And, yes. He especially only contributed very grudgingly. So that’s why this year I’ve decided to let them off the hook because I don’t really feel in the mood for badgering. And even if I hadn’t and– and my turn came, I would have said I was grateful to you.

No, it’s true, Konstantin. As I’ve said, you’ve been a source of comfort to me these past few weeks. And I will always be in your debt for saving my precious Victoria.

I did what anybody would have done in that situation.

You’re being modest. You could have been killed. I’m just sorry the kidnapper got away. And I pray the police, they catch him soon. Hmm.

You don’t wanna visit Maggie? I thought you two were close.

Yes, that’s true. We are. Um, actually, she encouraged me to go to AA a couple years ago, a while back. She’s been very kind and supportive. I just don’t wanna intrude on your family moment.

Baby, from what John and I learned in Greece from various sources, I’m pretty sure they were enemies. They hated each other.

Do you really think that’s a good idea? I mean, he has been a great comfort to her, and it just seems cruel to take that away from her when you’re not % sure.

Look, I know these aren’t huge lies, and there might be reasonable explanations, but you can see why I’d be concerned.

Well, yeah, I-I can. Um, and I don’t love that he’s lied to my mother. But, um, I-I think it’s like you said. He was just trying to make her feel better and cheer her up.

I agree with you. But I think what Steve’s trying to say is that maybe you could just keep an eye on things and make sure that Konstantin isn’t lying about anything else. What?

Well, honestly, I had my doubts about Konstantin too. I thought he was overstaying his welcome and that my mom was getting too dependent on him, but… I’ve come to believe that he’s one of the good guys, a hero, in fact.

Why would you say that?

Well, yesterday, he saved my daughter from a kidnapper.

What? What kidnapper?

Do the cops have any leads on the kidnappers?

No, I’m afraid they don’t have that much to go on. I only saw the person from the back when they ran out with the baby.

And you weren’t able to give them any kind of description.

Pfft. No, I didn’t get a good look. I was too focused on the child.

But you said it was a man.

I assume it was. Not to be sexist, but I’m not certain a woman could have hit me that hard.

Well, I don’t know. You’d be surprised.

Yeah, but what do you think the kidnapper’s motive was, really?

Money, I suppose. Hmm?

Hmm, yeah, sounds about right, just pure, wanton greed.

We think perhaps the kidnapper was gonna try to ransom the baby back to us.

Um, I think Everett and I put together a, uh– a pretty good defense of Leo. We definitely had to get creative, but, um, we worked well together, which I know isn’t what you want to hear.

Yeah, look, I know I was a little hard on him. More than a little. I promise you I’ll give the guy a chance.

Hey, boss, I’m just, uh, finishing up the response to Leo Stark’s murder charges. Do you wanna take a look at it before I send it to the printer?

Sarah just said that he was knocked out on the floor when the baby was taken. He had been attacked.

Uh, not to mention, my mom did see the kidnapper from behind. I mean, Konstantin couldn’t have made all that up.

Unless he had an accomplice, a partner in crime.

Yeah? Upset? Yes, of course I’m upset. God, you almost outed our connection, telling Maggie and Alex that we know each other.

Ah, yes, scarfing down a sandwich alone in the pub. What the holidays are all about.

[clears throat] EJ, heard about what happened to you and Nicole. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I don’t want your condolences, commissioner, I want you to find the bastard who ran my wife off the road.

Dimitri, what are you doing here? Have you forgotten that you’re a fugitive? I thought you were leaving town.

In fact, I had everything to do with the opposite– with bringing him into the world. For which I am very proud, though heartbroken, that his stay here was so tragically brief.

Well, he swears up and down that he’s innocent, but he’s having a little trouble tracking down his lawyer, so I figure I’ll just let him stew in the interrogation room for a while and maybe he’ll get interested in making a deal.

EJ, believe me, our department wants Dimitri found just as badly as you do. I have my best detectives on the case.

Hmm, while you sit here enjoying a turkey dinner.

I don’t care if he is hang gliding over the Caspian Sea, I want him found. And when he is unceremoniously frogmarched back into Salem into police custody, I am going to throw the book– actually, no, the whole library– at him and his boyfriend Leo Stark.

Heard about that. Pretty steep charge.

Do you take issue with how I decide to prosecute criminals?

Alleged criminal. And no, in this case, I do not. But I am curious as to what you’re doing with Ava Vitali.

[exhales deeply]

OK. You remember when I stopped by here a couple of days ago with a premature but otherwise perfectly healthy baby boy in my arms, and you assured me that you would deliver said baby to the hospital? Well, now I am hearing– and please do correct me if I’m wrong– that that baby is, how shall I put it, dead?

Dimitri, listen.

Sloan, no, you listen. Now, I know that there was no love lost between you and Nicole, but I mean, god, do you despise her that much?

Excuse me, do you think that I killed Nicole’s baby?

Well, didn’t you?

What? No! Listen, Dimitri, I’m no doctor, but as you said, Nicole’s baby was born prematurely on the side of a road after a car crash. The baby was– the baby wasn’t doing well. That’s why I took it to the hospital. But by then, it was too late. The baby didn’t even stand a chance.

Mm. I see. Well, then, tell me–may I– why is it, if Nicole’s son is dead, that your apartment looks like you ransacked the baby department at Saxton’s?

[dramatic music]

Oh, he’s so beautiful.

We just got the forensics back. My team found fibers underneath Gil’s fingernails consistent with those which we got from Ava’s blouse, which obviously lends credence to Ava’s story and the fact that he did, in fact, attack her.

You don’t think Ava is clever enough to falsify evidence?

It’s possible. But why would she? From what I can tell, and based on the evidence we have so far, she had no motive to kill him except in self-defense.

Mm. Then if you are satisfied with the facts of the case as presented by Ava and substantiated by the evidence at the scene of the crime, I see no reason to press charges.

Nor do I.

And now I must attend to my wife. And you, Commissioner Hernandez, must find the bastard who killed my son.

[laidback rock music]

Detective Hunter, you’re looking lovely today. You didn’t happen to bring me a turkey dinner, did you? Or better yet, a tofurkey. I consider myself a vegan at heart. You know, just one that eats meat from time to time.

Nope, no turkey or tofurkey. And I’m afraid, Leo, that you’re the one whose goose is cooked.

Cut the crap, Leo. I heard that you were up for murder felony charges for the death of Nicole DiMera’s baby. Which, believe me, is no laughing matter, and especially is not funny to the DA.

What is–well, “funny” is not the word. I’d say the word is “disturbing”– is that the DA happens to be Nicole’s husband. So if you’re done trying to twist my arm and spread good cheer–

I’ll be happy to leave you in peace, but not until I tell you how I can make these charges go away.

Yes, really. If you must know, Melinda Trask has been helping Eric and yours truly in the adoption process. That’s why she was here the other day when you showed up. [chuckles] But let me just get something straight. Uh, just a few days ago, I leave you with a perfectly healthy baby boy who then suddenly somehow dies of heretofore unknown internal injuries. And then as luck would have it, you find yourself the recipient of a perfectly healthy infant, a boy, nonetheless, who is born, as it seems, the exact same time as the baby that I dropped here with you just days earlier. Now, Sloan, how stupid do you think I am? You took the baby for yourself. Didn’t you?

[tense music]

Yeah.

What do you mean?

Just as I said– this is my baby.

[breathes shakily]

I can’t even begin to imagine the kind of pain you’re in right now, but this isn’t your baby.

[exhales]

[eerie notes] It’s a boy.

He’s so adorable. That teeny little nose and all those little fingers.

He’s my precious baby. It’s a little miracle.

[breathes shakily] Right after he was born, Leo put him in my arms and I held him for the first time, and I saw his sweet little face. I’ll never forget. Eric, this is him. This is–this is the baby that I gave birth to. This is the baby that I carried inside of me for months. This is him! This is my son.

[dramatic music]

I do indeed.

Mm. Since you are stuck here all night, I thought you might be hungry.

Yeah, well, it’s– it’s linguine carbonara. I know it’s not very Thanksgiving-y, but, uh, I didn’t think you’d mind–

Let me guess, he shows up to meet me, you and another gumshoe jump out of the foliage with a butterfly net and cuffs, spouting his Miranda rights to him.

You know, Leo, there’s no reason why a man so stylish and witty as you– a man of letters, no less– should be cooling his heels in a stuffy room like this, especially since you’re not the one we want.

In this case, no. You’re a guppy, a minnow. And yes, it might seem like you and Dimitri are partners in crime equal, but it’s clear that he’s the mastermind behind this operation.

Well, I would agree he does tend to be the assertive one.

Mm, he’s also the criminal, evil, and despicable one who tried to kill Stefan and Gabi and who assaulted a police officer. And the most appalling of all, he was the one driving the car that ran Nicole DiMera off the road. So, uh, why don’t you give Dimitri a call and I can have you out of here in time for turkey and gravy?

Of course I didn’t take Nicole’s baby. You know, Dimitri, it is possible for two babies to be born on the same day. In fact, I presume that it’s possible that thousands of babies are born on the same day in this country alone.

Right, but we are talking about a baby that I brought to you on the same day that you’re claiming that Nicole’s baby died

So what? Never heard of coincidence?

Yeah, but this is a pretty convenient coincidence, don’t you think, Sloan? Look, I really don’t care either way if my beloved uncle and Nicole get to raise this baby. But what I do care about is Leo, and right now, he’s being charged with the murder of a child that is still very much alive.

And right when we found out that it was happening, that we were about to get a child of our own, Melinda called and said that the mother, she had changed her mind. Apparently, my reputation precedes me. But the mother didn’t think I was fit to be a parent. And I thought, if one prospective parent could find out the truth about me, who’s to say that all the rest couldn’t? And that is when I realized that me being a mother was going to be an uphill battle– a battle that I quite possibly would lose. When you showed up at my door unannounced and you have that beautiful baby in your arms–

You thought, finders keepers? No. No! Sloan, no. Wait. So that’s why you agreed to help Leo, because you knew that that was the only way to get me out of town. And if I’m out of town, then I’ll never discover your nefarious little plot.

Well, I did agree, didn’t I? Isn’t that what you care about? Isn’t that what you want?

Are you kidding me? The only reason that Leo is even in this mess is because you decided to play Mommy Dearest with someone else’s kid!

EJ, I was so sure. I was so sure about the baby. I mean, his– his little face and– and the look in his eyes, and the way I felt when I held him. I–I was so sure he was mine.

Well, I don’t think that’s all that surprising, given what you’ve been through, the unimaginable trauma your body has experienced these past few days, coupled with the grief that you and I both feel. Your mind was just playing tricks on you, that’s all. Like you said.

I know, I know, I know I said that. I know I did. But the more I think about it, I– it’s just his face, EJ. He looked just like him, the baby I gave birth to. And not only did he look like him, it was the way I felt. It was the way I felt when I held him.

Sweetheart, when you held our son, you had just been in a terrible accident. You were badly hurt. I mean, even when I got there, you were still in a daze. And from what I gathered, you hadn’t– you hadn’t held the baby for very long.

No, I hadn’t. But even though I held him a moment, I– Come on, EJ, will you just hold me, please?

Ava, it’s me, Harris. Happy Thanksgiving. And I’m really grateful you’re not spending it here at the station, that we were able to get you released from police custody last night. Anyway, look, I think I lost my work keys yesterday. And I was just wondering if you saw them while you were here because I cannot seem to find them anywhere.

[mysterious music] Some detective I am, huh?

[laughs] Well, I’m sure they’ll turn up. I hope we can talk later.

[phone beeps]

[knock at door]

Hello, Ava.

[dark music]

But the baby’s okay, right? He’s drinking enough formula, not crying too much?

Oh, he’s crying plenty. In fact, I’m surprised you can’t hear him, even on the other side of town.

Hmm, sounds quiet now.

Yeah, he’s just showing off for his new mom, who I’m sure is very excited that she’ll soon be holding her precious little boy in her arms.

No, yeah. I-I am excited. I–yeah, I’m just also terrified.

Sloan, you gotta stop with all the doubts and the guilt, okay? Everything is going really smoothly, and more so than I even expected. So all you have to do is keep your mouth shut.

Yeah, except–except, what if, uh, when the baby, he gets older, you know, if– what if he starts to look like them? You know, he starts to look like Eric and Nicole, and, I don’t know, someone suspects– if they do, that– that he’s their biological son?

[sighs]

[somber music]

What’s, uh– what’s that? Oh, I see the Thanksgiving lunch menu options are limited: low-sodium turkey dinner or low-sodium plant-based turkey dinner. Good news, you won’t have to choose either because you’re being discharged today. I brought your things.

What? That’s the bag I-I-I packed to go to the hospital when I went into labor. It’s–it’s got the baby’s receiving blanket, coming-home clothes, Bear Bear. And that’s–it’s Holly’s first stuffed animal that she wanted her little brother to have.

I’m sorry, sweetheart, not anymore. It just has your clothes in it. You must be tired of being in that hospital gown. Although, you do look beautiful in anything.

[chuckles]

[clears throat] Sorry to, uh, interrupt.

Dr. Pierce, do you have any updates on what caused our, um– our son’s death?

Autopsy was just completed. Uh, Mr. DiMera, maybe we can speak outside?

No. I need to know. I need to know what happened to our son.

It’s as we suspected. His death was a result of injuries sustained in the car accident.

But I– I don’t understand. After I gave birth to him, I held him. And–and he was perfect. He was fine.

So you’ve said, yes. But with internal trauma, sometimes the damage is delayed. There’s no way anyone could have known.

But I should have known. I’m his mother.

Don’t you dare blame yourself, Nicole. My nephew Dimitri caused the accident that resulted in our son’s death. And though he may be out of reach, Leo Stark is not. And that bastard will pay for this.

Huh, I guess I do have something to be thankful for today after all. You’re finally letting me out of here.

As you may be aware, Dr. Pierce, Leo Stark was a passenger in the vehicle that struck my wife’s. Now I’m informing you, as Salem’s district attorney, you should be prepared to testify that that vehicle and that accident was the one that caused my son’s death.

I’ll do whatever I can to help. Now if you’ll excuse me.

Wait. Please. I wanna see him. I wanna see our son.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[scoffs] Murder? Exactly whose murder is EJ planning on charging me with?

[sighs] Would you stop fast-forwarding to the future? Borrowing trouble, as my mom used to put it. It’s not like the baby’s gonna be a clone of Nicole or Eric. He’s gonna look like himself. And everyone will accept that he is your adopted kid, yours and Eric’s.

Okay, yeah. I’ll stop fast-forwarding. But what about now, huh? Are you sure people aren’t gonna ask questions? Nicole, Leo, and Dimitri, who were there at the birth, they saw Nicole’s baby, they know he’s healthy.

Dr. Pierce is going to explain to Nicole and EJ that their child died from internal injuries sustained in the crash and that no one at the scene could have predicted that.

God, this is so dark. How can you be so matter-of-fact about it?

I’m–I’m being practical, which you need to be too. Look, Sloan, you wanted to give Eric a baby. And that’s what I’m helping you do. And–come on, Sloan. A little gratitude, huh? This should be the happiest Thanksgiving of your life.

Yeah, it should be. I love Eric. I’ve wanted so much to give him a baby, raise a child with him. I just never thought it would happen like this.

[unsettling music]

Mrs. DiMera, I– I don’t think that’s wise.

Ava, don’t, please. Clyde told me all about how he strong-armed you into running his entire drug operation by threatening the life of your son. And now he’s doing the same thing to me by threatening Gabi. And Gabi’s a sitting duck up at Statesville, and that son of a bitch Weston has made it abundantly clear that he will not hesitate to kill her or have her killed unless I play ball. So yeah, you and I, we’re working together, whether we like it or not.

[ominous music]

But I was there. I delivered that baby. Nicole, she was– she was so brave. And–and that little boy, he was the cutest thing I had ever seen. I–messy when he first came out, and his skin was wrinkly, but in the few seconds that I held him before I gave him to his mother… we bonded. My God, how could that little cutie have died?

Well, they believe it was internal injuries from the crash.

But I didn’t have anything to do with that. I’m the one who brought him into this world. Messy and wrinkly, yes, but he looked so healthy, so alive.

Yeah, he may have appeared healthy, but it was the delay in getting him medical treatment that apparently resulted in his death.

I don’t–I don’t understand. I mean, what was the delay? Why didn’t Dimitri get him right to the hospital?

We’re only gonna find out if he ever turns up. But if a death happens during the commission of a felony– in this case, you and Dimitri fleeing the jurisdiction in Detective Hunter’s stolen vehicle– the perpetrators can be charged with what’s called felony murder. And you… are one of the perpetrators.

I need to speak to my lawyer.

That you never thought you’d be a parent this way?

Yes, you will, Sloan. And when you hold your new baby in your arms, all of your worries will be behind you and your guilt. You’ll be too busy being a mom to this sweet little angel that you won’t have time to think of anything else.

Hey, neither do I. All that matters is that he is ours. We’re gonna love him with all our hearts. both: Mmm.

[sighs] If you don’t want to do this, EJ, I understand. It’s gonna be really hard to see our son… Our little boy. But I-I-I need to hold him one last time.

And you–you– you never had the chance to hold him. And you should have. And I am so sorry that it has to be this way.

If they start asking questions, soon it’ll become very clear that no baby was brought into the ER that night.

[sighs] Clyde wants me to use DiMera Enterprises to ship drugs into Salem, and he wants me to move them through the Bistro. That’s where you come in.

Yeah, well, that perv, Gil, and I, we didn’t get very far on our business plan.

Is there any other alternative, Ava? Look, I don’t know about you, but I take Clyde Weston’s threats very seriously. So I’m not gonna let him or any of his goons lay a hand on my wife. So you and I, for the foreseeable future, we’re gonna need to keep the ones we love very close and very safe. And I’ll tell you this: I’m not gonna let Clyde use me like this for long.

What the bloody hell do you mean, “Our son was accidentally cremated”?

I’m gonna kill you. How could you let this happen?

It’s standard practice at this hospital that, after an autopsy is done, the decedent is sent directly to the funeral home. And I’m afraid your son’s body was mislabeled. I’m–I’m terribly, terribly sorry.

Oh, you’re sorry? You’re sorry? You think that’s good enough? This–this–this is a bloody travesty. For God’s sake, how could anyone make such a horrible, heartbreaking mistake? And why weren’t you there to stop it?

I wish I were. It was done without my knowledge. I-I-I– I’ll arrange to have the ashes delivered to you as soon as possible.

Nicole, I, um– I-I-I am so sorry that this happened. And I will see to it that whoever is responsible for this will be relieved of their duties.

That’s the easy part. See, the trickier part is gonna be getting into that evidence room and finding whatever they have on Clyde’s associate.

Your brother is the DA. Can’t you just find a way to work this out with him?

Believe me, I even offered him all of our DiMera shares if he got Gabi out, but he is a stubborn son of a bitch, and I got on his bad side.

Oh, and now he’s gonna make you pay for it.

[sighs] EJ. I don’t know if I can do this.

You mean the ones I was craving when I was pregnant? I just–I just thought that if I got them now, I would feel closer to him. You know, it’s crazy. I know that.

Look, the only reason I got involved in the adoption is because I lost my job as DA, and I needed the money. And it paid well, and I was helping a friend. Then things got more complicated than I expected, and I stuck my neck out, mostly out of the goodness of my own heart.

[laughs] And such a good-hearted endeavor it’s been.

Well, you’re in no position to be judgmental, Dr. Pierce, since you went along with it all the way.

It’s a little late to have an attack of conscience, don’t you think?

Instead, I am mourning the loss of that little boy that I happened to have delivered– the cutest little nose and… tiniest fingers I’d ever seen. I don’t know that I’ve ever been this sad in my entire life.

Oh, you have a heart? Is that–is that what you’re trying to say?

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying because aside from my boyfriend, everyone in this town just thinks I’m a shallow loser whose only real talent is being hilariously funny and charming.

Is your lawyer on her way?

Um, unfortunately, she is not. She was otherwise engaged.

Mm, it’s almost as if Baby could tell that Eric was the real father and– and that I wasn’t the real mother. My God, I am losing it. I’m talking to a stuffed bear. What if I’m not cut out for this? What if I just made the biggest mistake of my life?

I was just coming in to set the table. But look at this! Oh, you’ve got it all done.

Well, you wouldn’t let me anywhere near the kitchen, and I had to do something to help. I know how excited you are to have Abe over for Thanksgiving.

We were proud to support you, especially for such a good cause. I’m sure you raised a lot of money for the food bank.

Oh, a major crush that she is terrible at hiding.

Well, aside from the age difference, I mean, aren’t those two related somehow?

Yeah, his dad and her mom just recently got married, so they’re technically step-siblings, but they’re not related by blood obviously.

Well, you and Johnny do have a history of being two sides of a triangle.

No, no, this is nothing like me and Johnny and Allie or me and Johnny and Wendy. This is definitely not serious.

Mm, well, you’re looking pretty glum about it.

Well, that’s just because things with me and Johnny have been going so well lately, and given how complicated they were before, I just don’t want a repeat of that.

Mm-hmm, that is understandable.

Yeah, and even if it is just silly and will never amount to anything, I– I don’t need some angsty teenage girl looking at my boyfriend with puppy-dog eyes and staring daggers at me.

It’s just– it’s so sad what happened to your mom and my dad, just them losing their baby the way they did. It’s–

Yeah, it really is. You know, I just wish we would have at least gotten to meet him, our baby brother.

[laughs] I’m so sorry. I’m Everett Lynch. I’m the new editor at “The Spectator,” and I’m here to tell your story.

My story?

Yes, I’m– I’m new in town, see? And I saw Tom and Alice Horton’s plaque in the square, so I know that the Horton family is a Salem institution, and that you and your husband are the living matriarch and patriarch of this city. I’d love to do a feature on you both for the paper.

[groovy music]

I am surprised.

Why is that?

Because the last feature you did in your newspaper was on Leo Stark, who deserves to be in an institution.

Ah, I see.

And you went to great lengths to glorify his crimes in that feature article. And now you appear on Thanksgiving, full of all this hubris and absolutely sure that my husband and I will want to give you an interview and fulfill your vision, whatever it is. Well, we’re not going to, not a word, not a word to print about us in your paper. In fact, I’m planning on canceling my subscription.

I understand.

No, no, I don’t think you do, Mr. Lynch. “The Spectator” has been going steadily downhill ever since it was stolen by Xander Cook and his little Gwen from my cousin, Jennifer, and her lovely husband, Jack Deveraux. If you ask me, the only thing that’s gonna save that paper from utter ruin is a new regime, new ownership that cleans house.

Tell you what. I might not have won the Turkey Trot, but I just set the record for fastest shower in the world.

Oh, ooh-ooh. Wow. Well, you missed a call.

Huh? Oh, OK, thank you.

It’s from my cousin, Gwen.

The caller ID popped up. I just happened to see it. Chad, why is she calling you? I thought you hated her.

I do. I–I don’t know why she’s calling me.

Um, you don’t have any curiosity about the message she left? I know I do.

She was just, um– she was just calling to wish Thomas a happy birthday. She knows his birthday’s tomorrow because when she was his nanny, you know, they– they got– they got pretty close so…

Um, finish getting ready. I’ll go see what’s going on.

Hey, it’s Chad. Yeah, no, the contracts are signed. I’ll have the money transferred as soon as the banks are open tomorrow. Hey, thank you for selling me your half of “The Spectator.” Remember, I need you to keep this to yourself. Because I told you, Gwen, I don’t want Stephanie finding out why I’m doing this, to get Everett Lynch out of our lives.

My first instinct was to distance the paper from Leo Stark, but PR advised against it. As you may know, “Lady Whistleblower” is very popular.

Of course, it’s popular. The writing is dreadful, and there’s no moral integrity there.

Well, I will admit, Mrs. Williams, I’m still finding my footing. I’m hoping that an article extolling the virtues that you and your husband embody might provide some balance there. I assure you that I am committed to restoring Jack Deveraux and Jennifer Horton’s legacy and to making “The Spectator” a respected institution.

I choose to believe you. There’s something about your face. It makes me want to believe you.

[sighs]

What? Wow, someone was hungry. You want the rest of mine or?

Why wouldn’t I? You’re a good guy. So, of course, you’re gonna be there for your family when they’re hurting. You have a really big heart, and that’s one of the things I love most about you. And Holly, I know that she’s– she needs you right now. So it’s just–

Yes, I’m sure, OK? And, hey, I know my dad gave cook the day off. So why don’t you and I head over to the kitchen and see what we can throw together for Thanksgiving dinner? Mm?

When Nicole went missing, I was trying to comfort Holly, but I sort of misread the moment.

Mm, how so?

We were close, close enough to kiss. so I kind of asked her if that’s what was happening.

But it wasn’t, right?

I was just– I was just trying to make her feel better. You know, I’m not completely clueless. Like, I don’t know. I didn’t make any big moves or anything. It’s just women can be hard to read, right?

I tried sending her a few texts, but she’s ghosting me so…

Mm, the old ghosting thing. Maybe you should do more than text. You know, maybe you should actually call her. It’s this weird thing that we do. You actually take the phone, and you call the person. You can actually talk to them.

Well, my advice to you is to not give up because you are a great kid, and she is a great girl, and I think, especially now, she could use somebody to– to lean on.

Yeah, not for long. I mean, we can see them out there for now at least.

Well, it looks like there’s been a cease fire. I told Thomas to let his little sister go first, and he agreed.

Well, that’s because she bribed them and told them they didn’t have to eat vegetables with their dinner.

It’s a holiday.

Yeah, it’s a holiday. How about the adults don’t have to eat the broccoli casserole?

Great, I’m relieved. But we are still eating pie, right, because the kids made this. I helped just a little bit.

Oh, darling, thank you. I’m sure it’s delicious. You will help me bring the food in from the kitchen when it’s dinner time?

I assume Doug’s in the kitchen cooking up a storm.

Well, actually, he’s taking a little nap. Running that Turkey Trot really exhausted him today.

Well, it’s a wonderful cause, and I’m so proud of both of you for participating. He’ll be down for dessert. Of course, if I tell him that he doesn’t have to eat the broccoli, he might come down for the main course.

And he’s been very helpful in the kitchen, regaling us with stories of his early days in journalism, a very charming fellow, charming.

Well, we–we both have– why do we both have to check on the turkey?

You could put the side dishes in the warming oven for me. They’re sitting right there on the counter. Would you do that for me?

I didn’t. I mean, he’s a good customer, right? So I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I went in to make another batch, and he sits out here, and he waits. and it takes me about an hour because I still luckily had some dough left from earlier.

Honestly, I can’t believe you did that. That’s, wow.

Yeah, wait, wait, wait. I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. So I box them up, right? I box them up, and then I come out. And then he’s still sitting there with three empty boxes.

Yes, the guy had, like, cookies in, like, an hour.

[laughing] And the craziest part about the whole thing is that he didn’t say a word about it. He just pays me and goes.

[sighs] My God. I can’t even imagine what your sister went through. And even after that entire tragedy, Nicole continued to raise Sami’s biological daughter as her own?

Until she learned the truth that Sydney was her daughter, not Nicole’s. I mean, in some ways, we still suffer the repercussions.

Eric, you just told me how much you care about Sami. How can you even forgive Nicole for something that she did to your sister?

I suppose even with his memory loss, he can still tell what a special person you are, and what a strong connection you both had.

Well as you can imagine, he once again begged me to drop the charges against Gabi.

Damn right I did. I imagine he is at Statesville right now relaying the bad news to his wife.

Well, as it turns out, I suffered a significant loss recently and happen to be in the market for a new man on the outside.

Yeah, plane landed a couple hours ago.

She’s good, considering. Uh, but she’s still on track to be released at the end of the year.

That’s great.

How was your dad’s wedding? I’m so sorry I missed it.

Uh, yeah, the wedding was–was fine, But, um… I have some pretty bad news. Uh… something terrible happened to my dad and Nicole last night.

[monitor beeping]

[breathes deeply] Cops start poking around, could broaden the investigation, so the evidence needs to disappear.

From your detective boyfriend, of course.

He wanted something from me.

What? What’d he want?

Uh, Eric’s home, so I got to go. Okay.

[phone beeps]

Who was on the phone?

Melinda. I called her to check in on our son. We still don’t have an exact date yet for his arrival, but it should be soon. And I’m very excited.

[chuckles]

Who’s devastated?

Well, you said something about someone being devastated and it’s all your fault.

Oh. Well, yes, I just– I didn’t really want to bother you with it, but Melinda was saying that– she said that the birth mother is having a difficult time with her decision to give up her child.

Is–is she backing out of the adoption?

No, no, no. She knows it’s for the best. And she’s absolutely going through with it. She’s just… You know, it’s difficult for her, as you can imagine.

Yeah.

[sighs] I can’t help but feeling… Really guilty.

Hey, Mom. How are you? I thought you might be sick of hospital food, so I brought you your favorite pizza…

I’m not hungry.

But I heard you haven’t had anything to eat since yesterday. Right, EJ?

That is true, sweetheart.

Mom, you can’t not eat. It’s not good for you. Here, you should at least have one slice.

Oh, my God, Johnny. That is so awful. Your poor dad, and–and Nicole– she must be going through it.

Uh, actually, I was thinking maybe I should go to the hospital, you know, check on Nicole.

Yeah, it was. It’s a terrible twist of fate.

Well, um… Initially, he– he claimed that he– he came here to discuss work, but then he got all handsy with me, and… he started coming on to me in the most…

I’m really sorry that happened to you.

Yeah. She’s… in hell right now, and… I don’t know. I hated seeing my mom that way. She’s always so strong, you know.

Always the one who was helping me, and now… I don’t know how to help her.

Gabi trusted the legal system. And her brother, the commissioner, he made promises, too. Where did it get her? She is still sitting in a cell.

Her case has not gone to trial. She could still be found innocent.

No, not with our new DA. EJ hates her guts. And he is going to exploit his power to keep her locked up forever.

[scoffs] And you want to know who EJ hates even more than Gabi? Spoiler alert… it’s me.

Why didn’t you call me last night? I would have came over right away.

[sighs] There was just a lot going on. It’s all a–all a bit of a blur, really.

Right. So how are you holding up? I know that’s a stupid question…

With Nicole being in the accident and… and losing… Oh, my God. It’s just…

Yeah. My God. But it’s Nicole I’m worried about. I just don’t know if she’s going to be able to pull through this. She won’t eat. She–she barely even looks at me. And poor Holly– she stopped by, only to have Nicole snap at her.

[somber music] I want to be there for her, but I also don’t want to push. Chad, I don’t know how to help her.

All right, EJ, listen to me, okay? When I lost Abby… I was in shock, you know, in the first few days at least. And there is nothing that anyone could have said or done that would have made any difference.

[sighs]

And everyone was trying to help. I was oblivious. All right, I just wanted to be left the hell alone.

I was mired in grief. And I didn’t want to be rescued from it. I just shut myself off to the world… From everyone… even the people that I love. That’s what Nicole is doing right now. Okay? So you just need to give it time. And when she’s ready, she will let you know. And when she is, you will be there for her. And you will be strong for her… for both of you.

[scoffs]

Yes. But it’s not that I’m jealous. It’s… it’s not what’s upsetting me now.

[scoffs] I don’t want to sound cold, but it’s not like she’s childless, right? She still has her daughter.

[groans softly] You know, I, um… I went through the same thing with Grace. Before I even knew she was my daughter, she left us. I never got to be a… a father to her. I never got that chance. And I can’t help it but– but think that, um… you know, if I just got to… meet her and spend a little time with her, even if–if it was just for a few fleeting seconds that it– that it would have brought… some comfort… To be able to… you know, carry– carry on in memory of her.

[inhales deeply] I’d have given anything for that, anything at all. Hold my son in my arms.
