Victor: Well.

Victoria: Daddy. What brings you by?

Victor: What do you mean, “what brings me by”? Do I need a reason to visit my beautiful daughter and the company that bears my name?

Victoria: You are here to ask me if I know about ashland financing the company in peru, the one that developed his treatment. I know about it already. He told me himself.

Victor: Hmm. So you’re realizing that he lied to you.

Victoria: You know, I don’t even know why you’re scrutinizing my husband’s treatment in the first place. I thought you were going to stop digging around in his past, and yet here we are again. It feels like sort of a betrayal.

Victor: I’m not here to discuss ashland, okay? I’m here to ask you how it’s going — the newman/locke acquisition of newman media.

Victoria: Everything is proceeding as expected, and if you’re referring to adam, he has been on his best behavior so far. However, now that you ask, the most peculiar thing has happened.

[ Objects clattering ]

Adam: Come in.

Sally: Good morning.

Adam: You are the last person that I expected to come through that door.

Sally: Because now that we’ve broken the seal on our relationship, we should avoid each other?

Adam: Because you rarely knock.

Sally: We…did things yesterday. We fraternized…a lot. And we crossed many…many lines.

Adam: Do you regret it?

Sally: Not one bit.

Adam: Then can we just relax? Because nothing has changed, except the fact that we don’t have to pretend we don’t want to rip each other’s clothes off every time we are alone together.

Sally: Well, then I guess we are having our first disagreement, because I am of the mind that finally being together did not put water on the fire. If anything, it was gasoline and it added to the flames.

Adam: Which is a bad thing?

Sally: Incendiary. Things are going to be hot. And stay that way. As long as we are within 10 feet of each other.

Adam: Our valentine’s day celebration did have an extraordinary aspect to it. A rare, um, intensity, something that you would find in an earthquake. Or a tsunami.

Sally: Or a wildfire, consuming everything in its path.

Adam: You would not believe me how long it took to clean this office. Everywhere I looked, it was just disorder.

[ Clears throat ] Not that I am complaining.

Sally: Well, the thing about earthquakes is there tend to be aftershocks.

Adam: Mm. Well, that sounds like something to look forward to.

Sally: But they can be dangerous, too. I mean, the good thing is that you know that they’re coming, so you can anticipate them. We were careful yesterday when we ran into chelsea afterwards not to give off any signs that things have progressed between us, but it is hard to hide tsunami- or wildfire-level activity.

Adam: That is a good point.

Sally: So how are we gonna handle this? Or the bigger question is… what exactly is this?

Victor: What has adam done?

Victoria: He made his first big hire.

Victor: Anyone I know?

Victoria: Mm-hmm. Sally spectra. He appointed her his coo.

Victor: He hired sally spectra? Who the hell is she? What does she know about running a company? She has no experience. He hired her without me knowing?

Victoria: Well, maybe ashland isn’t the person in this company that you need to be focusing on.

Victor: Is that boy out of his mind? Nice to see you.

Nick: Hey, mom.

Nikki: Nicholas.

Nick: You busy?

Nikki: No, I always have time for you. What’s going on?

Nick: Do I need a reason to come and visit my mom?

Nikki: You know, I’ve been wondering the same thing. Why can’t that handsome nicholas come and visit? Might it be because he is trying to avoid his father?

Nick: Mm, actually, we’re getting along pretty well these days. Is he around?

Nikki: No, he had to go over to victoria’s office.

Nick: Ah, probably just to remind her who’s still actually in charge.

Nikki: Now, your father is still a very important part of newman enterprises. He’s there as an advisor.

Nick: Curious to see how this new corporate hierarchy is gonna work, you know? With vick and adam forced to work together.

Nikki: Yeah, there will be some challenges.

Nick: Well, I’m more concerned about you, mom. It’s inevitable that adam and vick are gonna start fighting, and neither one of them fights very fairly. I’m concerned you could end up in the crossfire. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Nikki: Well, I assure you, i can handle any situation that comes my way.

Nick: I’m sure you can. But if you need anyone to talk to that doesn’t have any skin in the game, you know where to find me.

Nikki: Darling, I would never drag you back into the corporate madness that you managed to escape, especially when I see how happy that choice made you.

Nick: Yeah, I’m real fired up about the work that new hope is doing. We’re helping a lot of people.

Nikki: With your son by your side. And you really poached him right out from under victor.

Nick: Well, somebody had to save his soul.

Nikki: I’m also very happy that you made your peace with him and with victoria and adam, too, to an extent.

Nick: Yeah, I’m working real hard to get along with all of them, even though they rarely make it very easy on me.

Nikki: I also noticed that you seemed a bit lost over the holidays, but I think your trip to milan to visit summer really snapped you out of that. Spending time with your children is very grounding.

Nick: It is. Working with noah, spending time with faith and christian, they keep me on track, you know? They remind me of what’s important and how lucky I am, so any time I feel lost or confused, I’ve got these four amazing reset buttons, and just like that, I’m good to go.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Victoria: Oh. Oh, there you are. You know, you just missed my father.

Ashland: Hmm.

Victoria: Mm-hmm. He claimed that he came by to check on the newman media acquisition. You know, also, he never mentioned questioning you about peru. In fact, he said that he’s not on any kind of a fishing expedition.

Ashland: Well, that’s how you catch the most fish. You distract them so they never realize the bait is hanging on a deadly hook.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Well, he does have a penchant for playing things close to the vest.

Ashland: And that’s exactly what was happening this time.

Victoria: But I think maybe i turned the tables on him.

Ashland: Really? How so?

Victoria: I — I gave him a new direction in which to direct his suspicions.

Ashland: And where would that be?

Victoria: Adam and his new accomplice, sally spectra. You know that my father was not too happy to find out that he had tapped her as his new coo. And he despises being out of the loop.

Ashland: So I’ve gathered.

Victoria: Appointing sally without his permission was a doozy, trust me. I’m beginning to wonder if maybe things are not as solid between adam and my father as they both want me to believe.

Adam: Got to call what’s going on between the two of us something, huh?

Sally: Eventually.

Adam: Um, well, ladies first. I’d like to hear your ideas. I’m sure you have a few.

Sally: I have given some thought to the two of us and all of the accompanying implications and ramifications.

Adam: Alright.

Sally: I do not regret what happened here. Or over there.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: Or what occurred over there. And I definitely, definitely do not regret what happened here. ‘Cause that was —

Adam: Was spectacular.

Sally: You took the words right out of my mouth. Although [Clears throat] I do regret a little bit about what happened to the stapler.

[ Laughs ]

Adam: This is… collateral damage. No, but seriously, what’s on your mind? And be honest.

Sally: I just want to make sure that whatever happened here was not a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Adam: Well, I think we both know it wasn’t just a casual hook-up.

Sally: We do?

Adam: I have finally let go enough to be ready for this. I want to be with you.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Is there any way I can convince you to say that again?

Adam: I want you. What about you? And total, total honesty.

Sally: As tempting as it is, I do not want to continue this if it means we’re gonna be sneaking around. Because I don’t want to be your dirty little secret or your guilty pleasure or anything like that.

Adam: No, neither do I. Okay? I have too much respect for you to think of you like that.

Sally: You “respect” me?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Are you blushing?

Sally: Maybe. I don’t know, am I?

Adam: Well, I guess now would be the time to tell you that i was thinking about you last night, too. And as a matter of fact, I could not get you off my mind. The way that you smile at me when you’re walking through that door without permission.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: The two of us, inches away, doing everything we can not to touch each other. And I can’t think of any reason that I would want to keep you a secret.

Victor: I can.

Victor: Looks like your hands are full. I can come back later if you’d prefer.

Sally: I’m not really sure what you think you just heard, but it wasn’T…

Victor: Son, I think you’re aware that we are in the middle of a rather sensitive negotiation regarding the sale and merger of a big company, and we don’t need any distractions, alright?

Sally: Distractions? Is that what you think I am?

Ashland: Well, I’ve seen victor and adam at odds on a few occasions, but the fact that victor sold us newman media with the caveat that adam stay on in the same position leads me to believe that victor still trusts him.

Victoria: You know, there might be another possibility. What if my father kept adam in place so that I could keep an eye on him?

Ashland: You really think he’d do something like that?

Victoria: Well, you know, given my history with adam, absolutely. I’m the de facto bad guy. Adam steps out of line, I put him back in place or I tell my father about it and he does it for us. The thing is, as much as my father wants to believe that adam can be trusted, he knows — he knows that it’s a recipe for disaster.

Ashland: Then why give him power in the first place?

Victoria: Because maybe he wants adam to learn his lesson from the best.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] You really know your father, don’t you?

Victoria: My father and I, we’ve had our issues over the years. I have been his pawn. I have even been the rook. I’ve been the queen in his real-life game of chess. But regardless of the outcome, I’ve watched him and I see how he plays the game, far more than adam ever could.

Ashland: I think it would be a deadly mistake to underestimate him. Now, he doesn’t play this game on our level, but he’s deeply ensconced with newman media, and he does not like the idea that he has to take orders from us. No, I don’t think he’s just going to sit back and accept his fate. It’s not a question of if adam is going to make his move, it’s when.

Adam: Dad, that insult was completely uncalled for. I think you owe sally an apology.

Victor: Do you? Ms. Spectra, mind my saying so, I think you’re more than just an innocent distraction. You’ve had a hell of a career in a short time. From a dress-maker to a chief operating officer of a major company. That’s a hell of a meteoric rise. How’d you do it?

Sally: Well, the offer to step into the role took me by surprise as well. Only a fool would turn it down.

Victor: And only a fool wouldn’t realize that they’re punching way above their weight.

Adam: I have complete confidence in my decision and in sally’s abilities.

Victor: I’m sure you do.

Adam: She has vast experience in running a business.

Victor: You’re talking about running a corporation.

Adam: Mm-hmm, she has vast experience in marketing, finance, and research. She actually started a fashion house and revived it with her aunt’s brand, built it from the ground up.

Victor: Aren’t you leaving out a few salient points of her résumé? That disastrous debacle at forrester creations and her rather duplicitous actions towards my granddaughter.

Adam: Okay. Well, nobody in this room has clean hands, so if we’re gonna go around pointing fingers —

Sally: Thank you, adam. I’ve got this.

Nick: So sharon and faith threw tessa and mariah a heck of an engagement party.

Nikki: I know it. Faith tells me everything.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Did she also tell you that mariah and tessa are gonna adopt a child?

Nikki: Yes, I think it’s wonderful. I’m so happy for them.

Nick: What’s that smile about?

Nikki: Oh, nothing. Um…I was just thinking that, uh…someday soon, I’ll be able to call sharon “granny.”

Nick: [ Laughs ] That is funny.

[ Sighs ]

Nikki: What — what just happened there? What’s wrong? What are you thinking about?

Nick: Uh…cassie. I, uh — I wish more than anything that she would’ve lived long enough to get a chance to experience the things that mariah is, you know? Get a job, fall in love, start a family. I love all my kids so much, but…

Nikki: They can never take the place of the one you lost.

Nick: Yeah.

Nikki: You know, cassie will always be with you. And she’d want you to celebrate all the wonderful things that are coming your way. Embrace them, darling, because life can be so short. And one of these days, you’re gonna have so many grandchildren you’re gonna have to add a wing to the house.

Nick: That sounds awesome. Okay, I guess it’s your turn. Where did you just go?

Nikki: Nothing for you to worry about.

Nick: Mm-hmm. Usually dad’s at the center of whatever’s upsetting you.

Nikki: Alright, here it is. I knew exactly who and what victor newman was when i married — every time I married him — and I adore him. Everything we’ve been through together. But there has been another entity in our marriage.

Nick: Newman enterprises.

Nikki: Yeah. I mean, it’s not just a company. It is a part of us, it’s a part of you, even though you chose another path. And it — it takes up so much space in his head and in his heart. I just wish that he had been able to find a way to keep the family together through the company.

Sally: I won’t spend my entire life apologizing for my past actions. And that includes summer.

Victor: So you have no regrets?

Sally: I didn’t say that. I made a move to get what i wanted, what I thought i deserved, and I’m sorry that people got hurt. But summer landed on both feet. I will turn newman media into a company that people will sit up and pay attention to, not because I have a bunch of degrees or accolades, but because I have spent my entire life proving people wrong, making them sit up and notice me. With all due respect, I can do this. You will see.

Victor: If you don’t mind, i need to talk to you alone, okay, son?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Hope you’re satisfied now that sally was the right choice.

Victor: I’m dissatisfied that you didn’t consult me first.

Adam: Apparently I need your and victoria’s approval for every choice I make. Perhaps it was a mistake for me to stay on. Victoria is counting the minutes until I fail. It’s obvious that you don’t trust my judgment. So here it is, maybe newman media’s new scoop should be its own ceo’s resignation.

Victoria: Adam is nothing but trouble you know I only agreed to let him stay on to appease my father so that he would go through with the sale. But once the paperwork is done and there’s no going back on the merger…

Ashland: There’s nothing in the deal that states how long adam has to stay, just a provision that there be due cause for his dismissal.

Victoria: So we give him enough rope.

Ashland: It would be a shame if adam were to fail and give us just cause to fire him.

Victoria: What if, instead of waiting for adam to screw up, what if we just make damn well sure that he does?

Victor: Son, let me make this clear again. We haven’t even finalized the merger yet. It’s all in a state of flux.

Adam: I’m done justifying my hiring of sally, okay?

Victor: You’re really attached to this dress-maker, aren’t you?

Adam: She is more than that.

Victor: I bet she is.

Adam: I know that you have reasons to be suspicious, but you have only seen one side of her.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] And you’ve seen all sides, haven’t you?

Adam: The point is she is not some diabolical self-serving mercenary that everybody thinks she is. She is the right woman for this job.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Alright, son. I won’t stand in her way as long as she’s a team player and proves that she can do the job as coo of this company.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You will not regret it.

Victor: Now, we have a more pressing problem to deal with.

Adam: Like what?

Victor: Ashland locke. May as well tell you that I have never really fully trusted him.

Nikki: Now, don’t misunderstand, I am not disparaging your father’s devotion for his family. His love for all of you is unparalleled.

Nick: Family has always been dad’s priority, but the family and the business have always been intertwined.

Nikki: Exactly.

Nick: I’m just lucky, you know, I don’t ever have to worry about that. I love working with noah, but if he told me he didn’t want to do that, if he wanted to do something else, whether it’s artwork or going to live on a fishing boat, I would tell him, “cool, I just want you to be happy.”

Nikki: I know you would. Your father has had some struggles with that.

Nick: Well, you know, dad has never had to find his grounding through, you know, his kids’ happiness. He’s always had something else to balance him out and keep him sane.

Nikki: What would that be?

Nick: Well, you, of course. You’re the love of his life.

Victor: Let me just say i have discovered some inconsistencies regarding his cancer treatment.

Adam: Okay, I mean, isn’t he legitimately getting better? Why would he fake that, unless he was trying to give victoria hope?

Victor: I don’t see why he would. She had already accepted his cancer diagnosis before they were engaged.

Adam: Well, perhaps he wants to appear strong to stay in the game, until the inevitable.

Victor: I want you to stay vigilant. If you see any contradictions in what he does, any inconsistencies, I want you to report to me.

Adam: Uh, I think I would be the last person that ashland would report to. Um…he’s made it clear that he hates that I’m staying on.

Victor: Really?

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Huh.

Adam: Made it quite clear he’s gonna be keeping me on a short leash.

Victor: Well, I’ll be damned. That goes both ways. Keeping you on a short leash means that you have a very good vantage point to see how he operates, who he communicates with.

Adam: So let me just get this straight. Are you asking me to spy on locke?

Victor: Did I say that?

Adam: [ Sighs ] Is this a test of my family loyalty? Are you hoping that I will decline your request to spy on victoria’s husband to prove that I won’t betray her?

Victor: If you love your family and your sister, you do as I say. (Jackie) I’ve made progress with my mental health.

Sally: Is it safe?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Come on in.

[ Clears throat ]

Sally: If I need to clean out my desk, please just tell me now.

Adam: You’re fine.

Sally: I need to hear the words.

Adam: You are still coo of newman media.

Sally: [ Exhales sharply ] Do you mind if I shout it from the rooftops?

Adam: I think we should let our pr department handle that.

Sally: What did victor say? I wasn’t sure how my defiant, in-your-face stance came across.

Adam: He will never admit this, but I could tell that he was impressed.

Sally: This is big. Huge. Thank you.

Adam: For what?

Sally: Defending me.

Adam: Well, my father wasn’t the only one that was impressed. I’m — I’m in awe. I… it’s not a lot of people that are brave enough to go toe-to-toe with victor newman like that.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Well, don’t think that I wasn’t shaking like a leaf, ’cause my heart was going like a million beats a minute.

Adam: Really? I never would have known that.

Sally: Good.

Adam: Okay, this is just sure-fire proof that you are going to succeed. To never let them see you sweat.

Nikki: Your father and I do have something special. Not every relationship is meant to last forever.

Nick: You mean like mine? And I’m only saying that to save you from saying it.

Nikki: Oh. Now, I don’t want to be unkind, but I’m not terribly disappointed that some of your romances didn’t last longer.

Nick: Oh, I’m well aware. Thank you. Yeah.

Nikki: Darling, I wish you every happiness, I really do.

Nick: Thanks, mom. I’m good, you know, with new hope and the kids. I’m in a great place.

Nikki: I’m so happy to hear that.

Victor: Hey, my boy. What a nice surprise.

Nick: Hey, dad.

Victor: So how’s everything?

Nikki: He’s fine. He just came by to catch up.

Nick: Yeah, wanted to see how things were going with the latest newman/locke acquisition.

Victor: Couldn’t be better.

Nick: So that’s it?

Victor: What, you expected more?

Nick: It’s kind of a big move, and not just for the business, but…

Victor: But what?

Nick: Dad, vick and adam can’t be in the same room together for two minutes before they start fighting. Do you really think it’s a good move to force them to work together?

Victoria: You know something? I am so thrilled that you are on board. You have no idea how many times people have tried to stop me from doing something like this.

Ashland: This will require surgical precision, you know. If your father gets wind that we’re trying to undermine his son…

Victoria: [ Sighs ] He will not take kindly to that at all.

Ashland: Well, you and victor may rest assured that no part of the company will suffer. Once adam is shown the door and sally is not far behind him, i will be more than happy to step in and oversee newman media myself.

Victoria: It’s just a larger version of your former company.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] Ah, being in charge of a media group again, that would be my pleasure. Besides, I am quite used to maintaining a strong hand over everything I control.

Victoria: Everything you control?

Your heart is at the heart

of everything you do.

Victor: Well, son, I’m surprised you still give a damn about the family business that you decided to walk away from.

Nick: I left the job. I’ll never leave the family.

Victor: Well, if you want to keep peace between your siblings, then you’ll always have a place at newman, you know.

Nick: Yeah, I appreciate it. It’s just not in the cards.

Victor: Okay. Never say never.

Nick: Well, I’m sure you know I’m way more concerned about victoria getting hurt than I am the welfare of the business.

Victor: I’m glad to hear that. I, on the other hand, am keeping a very keen eye on the business.

Nick: Hmm. I just get the feeling there’s a larger play here in the works.

Sally: You don’t have to sugarcoat it. You can be totally honest with me about what victor had to say about me.

Adam: Okay, he said that he would not block your confirmation as coo as long as he’s convinced that you’re a team player and you can handle the job. Satisfied?

Sally: Oh, I believe you. But I know his reputation. So what are the chances that he approved of me to your face but will now go behind our backs to destroy my very existence?

Adam: Look, I get why you are suspicious. He has done similar maneuvers in the past. But this is not one of those times.

Sally: What makes you so certain?

Adam: While you were gone, he divulged some information to me, and he has bigger things to contend with.

Sally: Something good or something bad?

Adam: Something… something interesting.

Ashland: Have I upset you?

Victoria: You know this isn’t your company. It belongs to both of us.

Ashland: Okay, I didn’t mean to come off as overly possessive. In fact, I was speaking in the past tense, so let me correct myself. I was used to maintaining a strong hand in all I ever owned. How’s that? Was that better?

Victoria: I really hope you mean that, because we’re in this together.

Ashland: Yeah. 100%.

[ Chuckles ] Oh, come on, two minutes ago, you were talking about how great it felt to have me on your side. I am on your side, despite a slip of the tongue. Believe me.

Victoria: I want to believe you, I really do, but your last confession has me a little bit wary.

Ashland: Yes, I, uh… I am sorry that I didn’t share with you about my financing the clinic in peru. It was a — it was a stupid mistake on my part, and I deeply regret it, but listen to me. Don’t allow your father to sow seeds of doubt about me in your mind. Adam is the untrustworthy one.

[ Cellphone rings ] I better take this. I love you.

Devon: Hey.

Billy: Hey. Thank you for making this happen so early.

Devon: Absolutely. Absolutely. It all worked out well, given how iffy my day is going.

Billy: Yeah, I’m sure it’s a stressful time. Have you heard anything about what’s causing dom’s symptoms?

Devon: I have not. I have not. It’s not easy.

Billy: No, it’s not. I remember when delia had leukemia. We were looking for a bone marrow donor.

Devon: I forgot that you went through that at all.

Billy: Yeah. You know, it was a long time ago, but the memories are still very much vivid.

Devon: I can imagine. Getting together yesterday and talking about lily’s idea helped occupy my mind for a little bit, but just so you know, if abby or chance or the hospital calls, i might need to cut this meeting short.

Billy: Absolutely. What do you say we dive in?

Devon: Yes, please. Let’s do it.

Billy: Okay, so I put together a little something here. Take a look.

Devon: Oh, wow.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: Goodness, man, you — it’s color-coded.

Billy: Yeah.

Devon: Look at that. You were not joking when you said you were thinking big.

Billy: Well, you know what? I woke up in the middle of the night, and I had a few ideas i wanted to jot down before they disappeared, and then everything else kind of kept flowing, so —

Devon: Hang on a second, you did this last night?

Billy: Yeah, pretty much.

Devon: So you were up late last night, the night before that, and two nights ago? Do you ever sleep?

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Lily: When I saw this, i couldn’t resist.

Amanda: Oh, “jazz baby.” That is the cutest.

Lily: I know. On dom, it’s gonna be adorable.

Amanda: Thank you. Thank you so much. That’s so thoughtful.

Lily: Of course. Any excuse to buy baby things.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ]

Lily: How’s he doing, by the way? Is he feeling any better?

Amanda: Well, according to devon, nothing has changed. He’s still lethargic. He’s not eating the way that he should.

Lily: Does the doctor know what’s going on yet?

Amanda: They’re still waiting on test results.

Lily: Well, I really hope it’s something easy to treat.

Amanda: Yeah, me too. But I’m assuming that you’re not just here to drop off a baby gift.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Well, no, I also wanted to chat with you one-on-one, see how you’re doing. And, you know, just wondering how your law practice is going.

Amanda: Good, good. It’s going really, really well. Um, it’s a little slow right now. That’s why I’m home today. But we did get a huge rush of clients in the beginning, so much so that we had to turn people away, but now the wave of cases are wrapping up, so…

Lily: Must be nice to have a breather.

Amanda: Yeah, but we are gonna need to drum up some clients soon to pay for this fancy office space.

Amanda: Yeah, and you had that at chanccomm, and it produced great results.

Lily: I know that because you were one of my top people on the team. So when I said I needed legal representation, that’s what i had in mind. I want you to work with billy and me again, but this time, at the mothership — chancellor corporate.

Billy: You know what? I got too much going on right now. So I will sleep when I’m old.

Billy: I appreciate your concern, but really, it’s not a big deal. You know, it just — it feels like lately that’s where I’m getting most of my thinking done, where I’m feeling creative. I don’t know, maybe it’s the darkness, maybe it’s the fact that everyone’s sleeping and it’s actually quiet.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Maybe that’s why they call it the witching hour, because anything’s possible.

Devon: Aren’t you exhausted when you go to work the next day, though?

Billy: Well, that’s the thing. It can be a little bit tricky, but it’s nice to work from home. Sneak in a little nap once in a while. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn out to be nocturnal.

Billy: Life, you know? All those big questions, all those things that we feel. Should I slow down? Should I speed up? Should I go in a completely different direction? How do I make sure that fear and doubt don’t consume my life? You know, just stuff we all feel.

Devon: Sounds like a mid-life crisis without the actual crisis part, though.

Billy: Yep, you nailed it there. Um…but let me just be very clear, I am extremely happy where I am right now, and I want to do everything I can to make sure that I keep it that way.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Do you think I should wake up dominic, make sure he gets something to eat?

Chance: Maybe we should just let him rest till we know more.

Abby: Okay, if you think so.

Chance: Abby, you having any second thoughts about telling your family what’s going on? You know, maybe we could use some more support.

Lily: Because no one has decades of experience in the areas that I want to focus on. The things I want to do didn’t exist five years ago, right? Like the podcast project that billy and devon are working on.

Amanda: Yeah, devon did tell me about that.

Lily: Yeah, I want to work with people that have grown up with advanced technology, people that are comfortable with the pace of innovation.

Abby: Nate thought that we would be more comfortable here, and that way we don’t have to disturb dom, since he’s not feeling well, or leave him.

Chance: Okay. Uh…okay, that’s very accommodating of them.

Abby: Yeah.

[ Sighs ] If this were good news or something minor, they would have just told us over the phone, right?

Chance: We shouldn’t speculate, okay? We’ll know soon enough. I mean, what did he exactly say, word-for-word?

Abby: Well, nate didn’t want to get into it because hematology is not his field. He said that dr. Alston will explain everything and go over all of our questions.

Chance: Okay, well, that’s what matters, right? Getting answers. So we’ll find out what’s wrong and what to do about it, and we’ll get dominic whatever he needs.

Abby: Yeah.

Billy: I think this right here, that might be one of my favorite ideas. You know, everybody loves a good q&a, whether it’s about, you know, parenting or relationships or your neighbors or your job or whatever. It would be our modern version of a classic newspaper column.

Devon: Sure, and that’s a time-tested format.

Billy: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, everybody’s — we’re all asking questions, we’re all trying to fix things about ourselves, and this would be very intriguing. It would almost be like living vicariously through someone else’s thoughts and feelings. We’d be like a fly on the wall. I think people would really like it.

Devon: I agree with you. I mean, I sought some chats and blogs on parenting that I found to be really helpful.

Billy: Because they are.

Devon: Yeah.

Billy: And once we get off the ground, people are gonna write in, and we’ll have no shortage of material.

Devon: Yeah, you’re right about that. I mean, it makes the possibilities endless for what we can talk about. And like you said, I mean, i think too, we’re all asking ourselves those big life questions every day, like you’re doing up late at night.

Billy: Yeah, exactly. You know, maybe I’ll start my own podcast.

Devon: That’s not a bad idea.

Abby: Uh, he’s okay. Um, doesn’t seem uncomfortable or like he’s in any pain, but he doesn’t have much energy or an appetite.

Devon: Okay. Well, listen, I think the fact that nate and the specialist didn’t tell us to rush dominic to the hospital after they got the results is a great sign. ‘Cause if it was a medical emergency, they would have done that, you know?

Chance: That’s a good point.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Nate’s car just pulled up. They’re here.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] It’s so hard waiting for news about dominic.

Lily: It’s okay, I’m sure we’re gonna have some answers soon.

Amanda: Yeah, I know, I know. I’m just — I’m not the most patient person in the world.

Lily: Okay, well, then let me distract you. Let’s keep chatting about you coming to work with billy and me.

Amanda: You are really persuasive, you know that?

Amanda: Yeah, I see now how you were able to convince billy to be your second-in-command.

Amanda: I really — I just want to say, I did not think that his pride would have allowed him to do that, especially since you guys were on equal footing at chanccomm.

Lily: I know. Honestly, it was not easy. He turned me down the first couple times I asked him.

Amanda: Well, what made him change his mind?

Lily: Well, I don’t know. I think I just gave him some space and let him find his own path. You know, at first, he was just so focused on getting back at the people responsible for what happened at chanccomm, but then I think he realized it wasn’t making him happy and he was letting his ego get in the way of him, you know, doing something that was a great opportunity.

Amanda: And now he’s fully on board. He’s ready to be your lieutenant?

Lily: Yeah, I mean, I didn’t think it’d be easy, but it’s been great. We actually fight less now that there’s a, you know, very clear line as to who has the final say.

Amanda: Yeah, chain-of-command is a good thing.

Lily: Yeah, and billy knows that I love having him on board and that I actually want to hear his ideas. So now, if he brings me something and I’m not sold on it, he’ll either go and make a revision or he’ll, you know, let it go.

Amanda: Really? I mean, billy can do that? We’re talking about a man who has a lot of conviction about his own ideas.

Lily: I know. That’s a very nice way of saying that he’s stubborn as hell, which, yes, is true, but, no, he’s really excited about the transformation of chancellor, you know? We’re having a lot of fun.

Amanda: Well, I am glad that your partnership survived the shake-up at chanccomm, and i know that you two will do amazing things together.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Amanda: And I have to say, i am pretty impressed that billy has grown and evolved so much that he can embrace this supporting role, but the idea of giving up my new practice —

Chance: Thank you both for coming. Um, obviously, we’re really worried about our son here. We’re hoping you guys can shed some light for us.

Nate: Well, I’m going to defer to dr. Alston’s expertise.

Dr. Alston: Thank you, dr. Hastings. The first thing you need to know is that the results of the bone marrow aspiration showed no sign of leukemia.

Abby: Oh, thank god.

Chance: Yeah, that’s a relief.

Devon: That’s amazing we can rule that out.

Abby: I mean, are you any closer to finding out what is causing dominic’s symptoms?

Dr. Alston: We ran another test, and it revealed that dominic has a rare blood disorder. That’s what led to the low red blood cell count and the resulting fatigue and loss of appetite.

Abby: That sounds very serious.

Nate: Unfortunately, it is.

Dr. Alston: I recommend we treat this now, before it causes any other issues such as growth deficiencies, digestive problems, or frequent infections like pneumonia. Left unaddressed, this will likely lead to bone marrow failure.

Chance: Okay, so what does the treatment involve?

Devon: And what can we do to help?

Dr. Alston: The best way to combat this disease is a bone marrow transplant. Age-related macular degeneration may lead to severe vision loss.

Nate: It’s rare for a family member other than a sibling to be fully compatible. Although you both should get tested just in case. You’ll be half-matches at least, since dominic gets 50% of his genetic material from each of you.

Dr. Alston: There have been successful transplants using parental donors that are only half-compatible, but if we were to take that route, we would have to take special measures to reduce the chance of rejection.

Chance: I’m guessing the risks are higher in that case.

Dr. Alston: It’s not ideal, but it may be our best option.

Devon: Okay, so what do i have to do to get tested as quickly as possible?

Nate: Dr. Alston and I will head back to memorial and set that up for you immediately.

Amanda: If you haven’t forgotten, I have all the autonomy that I could ever want. I just opened my own firm with my sister as my junior partner.

Amanda: What kind of donors?

Devon: [ Sighs ] Dominic has a blood disorder. And that’s why he’s been so tired all of a sudden. Some kind of issue with his red blood cell count, and according to the specialist that nate brought in, he needs to have a bone marrow transplant.

Amanda: Oh, my god. Oh, my god. What does that even entail?

Devon: Uh, the procedure’s actually pretty simple, but the hard part’s gonna be finding a donor.

Amanda: What if you can’t?

Devon: If we can’t or even if we do and it doesn’t work, they’re talking about complete bone marrow failure, where all these horrible things could happen to him and his whole young life would be a living hell.

Amanda: God, I am so sorry. I’m so sorry. What did the doctors say? Did they say that you and abby can be donors? What do they think?

Devon: I don’t know. We didn’t get the test results back yet, but we’re probably just gonna be a half-match.

Devon: Yeah, and none of them are gonna have as close as a dna match as his biological parents. Usually the only other person that would be a sibling, which he doesn’t have, and if you want to get a perfect match, he’d have to have a —

Devon: Right. So, you know, me and abby are probably gonna be as good as it gets, which isn’t optimal, and it’s just another way of saying that we might not be able to save him.

Chance: Yeah, yeah, we — we got the test results back.

Chance: Yeah, he needs a bone marrow transplant.

[ Sighs ] I see, so I’m only a half-match, as anticipated. Well, what about devon?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, I’m not worried about what the world thinks because soon everybody is gonna see what i do.

Sally: Well, I feel the exact same way about you. Soon, victor and victoria are gonna have to forget all of their doubts and their worries and accept you as the phenomenal ceo that you are.

[ Laughs ]

Adam: What?

Sally: I’m sorry. I can’t help but laugh. We both flipped out when we walked in here and we saw all of this, the — the flowers and the champagne and the chocolate-covered strawberries.

Adam: I honestly thought that you set all that up.

Sally: I thought it was you! I mean, we acted like it was some, like, terrible breach of our contract to keep things strictly professional.

Adam: Well, we’ve been clear about, um, you know, how we’re gonna make this partnership work. We swore that we were gonna make sure things are uncomplicated.

Sally: Mm-hmm. Yeah. And never, ever actually celebrate a holiday.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. There’s that. But, uh, would that really have been the, uh, worst thing in the world?

Sally: If I had brought you the chocolate-covered strawberries and the champagne?

Adam: You know what I meant.

Sharon: Hey.

Rey: Hey.

Sharon: How’s it going?

Rey: Well, I have some bad news. I have to work on that burglary case tonight, so I don’t know how late I’ll be home. Trust me — this is not how i wanted to spend valentine’s day with you.

Sharon: Well, that’s okay. I understand. I do. You know, if you marry a cop, you’ve got to expect there’s gonna be late nights and missed holidays.

Rey: Well, I promise I’m gonna make it up to you.

Sharon: I know that you would be wining and dining me if you could.

Rey: Mm.

Sharon: And besides, I like the sounds of making it up to me. I think that’s going to be more fun.

Rey: Wow, you really are an expert at turning lemons into lemonade, huh?

Sharon: Well, I know how much it means to you to catch this burglar. I was asleep when you came in last night after the stakeout. So, how is it working with your partner again? And how did chance do on his first day?

Rey: Well, I hate to say it, but he wasn’t ready.

Sharon: Oh. What happened?

Rey: Well, I’d rather just leave it at that. But it might have been a good thing that chance tested the waters. It’s clear he’s still dealing with a lot. Joining me may have given him the opportunity to realize that he was pushing too soon to return to work.

Sharon: Well, I’m sorry to hear that. But hopefully this will help him find his way and he’ll get the help that he needs.

Rey: That’s what I love about you, you know? You’re always looking on the bright side of things. Which is why I can’t bear for you to go all day without your gifts. You know, I have some time before I have to go in. And while I have you almost all to myself, maybe I can take the time to show you just how much I love you.

Sharon: Well, I like the sound of that.

Rey: [ Chuckles ]

Noah: You know, the meeting with the county review board went well.

Nick: Well, let’s just keep our eye on the ball, alright? We got a long way to go.

Noah: Hey, I mean, is there anything we can do to speed up the process a little bit? This project can help a lot of people. I mean, here it is, valentine’s day already, and we really haven’t made that much progress.

Nick: I mean, these things take time.

Noah: [ Sighs ] Yeah, I get it. I just — I don’t know. I’m just anxious to see it all come together. And these decorations, man — these decorations are really not helping my mood. It is just a constant reminder that you and I are in the same boat this year, S.S. Dateless.

Nick: Are you kidding me? This is a made-up holiday that forces suckers to buy a bunch of candy and flowers, and you aren’t missing anything.

Noah: Oh. Really? Yeah, I’d almost believe that if I hadn’t seen you go all out over the years. So, nice try. You talk a good game, though.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Well, i guess you got me there. But trust me — I’m fine. Are you okay?

Noah: Yeah. Yeah. You don’t have to worry about me. But, hey, if you’re not doing anything, how about we hang out tonight while the rest of those suckers are out celebrating?

Like, I’m not gonna get him a mug with a soccer ball and “world’s greatest…whatever” on it, like you probably got rey. I mean, that’s too lame.

Rey: A mug?

Sharon: Um, not even close.

Faith: It was just an example, okay? Look, I have been going back and forth about what to get him for so long, my head is going to explode. And now valentine’s day has snuck up on me, and it’s gonna be too late to do anything.

Rey: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Relax. There’s still time to get him something cool.

Faith: Yeah, but what? That’s the problem. I don’t have a clue.

Sharon: Well, he loved that sweater you gave him for christmas. You seem to know what he likes.

Rey: Yeah, or what about a t-shirt from something you two shared together, like a movie or a ball cap or — what’s wrong with a mug? You know? Hey, listen, it’s the thought that counts. He’s gonna love anything you get him.

Faith: Yeah, that’s just the thing. I want to get him something that looks like I put tons of thought into it.

Sharon: Well, you could always make him something. He would love that.

Faith: Seriously, mom? Poster board and glitter?

Moses: Look, I really hate coming to you like this, but I’m desperate. I haven’t gotten anything for faith for valentine’s day, and not only am I running out of ideas, but I’m running out of time, too. So, what do I do?

Nick: Okay, first let’s slow down.

Moses: Yeah, but — i wouldn’t come to you if I had anywhere else to turn. Devon is busy with amanda, and nate’s working. So, who knows faith better than her dad?

Nick: Okay, um, I think her mother might have something to say about that, but I do know faith pretty well. Um…I know she loves that bracelet that you gave her for christmas. And I know this because she wears it every single day.

Moses: Yeah. I mean, that was a really good gift, but it almost got screwed up when I blew it by giving her a book. I mean, what was I thinking?

Nick: [ Laughs ] Alright, I think I can help you. Um, I think the first thing we need to do is figure out what you’re trying to say with this gift. You know, the bracelet that you gave her with the charms and, like, the chess pieces — that said, “I know you. You know, this is something that matters to you, and this is where we are right now.” Right?

Moses: Okay. Yeah.

Nick: So, moses, what is it you’re trying to say with this gift?

Moses: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: Sorry I wasn’t able to work last night.

Chelsea: Oh, don’t be silly. Is bella doing okay after her nightmare?

Chloe: Oh, yeah, she’s fine. I finally got her back to sleep. You know, it’s just all part of the wonderful, unpredictable world of being a parent. Something you know all about.

Chelsea: I do. Connor has had plenty of sleep issues. Apparently now I have sleep issues, too. Yeah, I had awful insomnia last night. Couldn’t sleep. It was driving me nuts. So eventually I got dressed and went to crimson lights.

Chloe: After we talked?

Chelsea: Yeah. I actually bumped into rey there. We had a really nice, normal conversation. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but I’ve just had a hard time lately finding my footing, you know? Talking to rey — it was just nice, you know, to talk to somebody that wasn’t judging me. God knows rey has every reason to.

Chloe: Well, you better get used to it. You’re gonna find fewer people getting all judgey on you now. That’s what your new life without adam is going to look like.

Adam: I was simply agreeing with you about how we reacted to the, uh, champagne before we realized it was from an advertiser. Maybe we were overcompensating a bit.

Sally: Perhaps.

Adam: But look at us. We’re doing a good job of navigating the situation and working together.

Sally: Yes. Yeah, we are. So, uh, let’s stay focused on the big picture.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Maybe we start with a list of our most pressing issues.

Adam: Well, the most pressing issue was acknowledging that there’s, uh, something more going on between us, but that we were able to compartmentalize those feelings so it doesn’t get in the way of what we’re trying to accomplish.

Sally: Are we?

[ Glass thuds ]

Sally: [ Laughs ] Kim is now demonstrating her congestion.

Sally: I’ve waited a really long time for this moment, and I — [Sighs] I still wasn’t prepared for it.

Chloe: Listen to me, chelsea. You are finally on the right track. You have to keep looking forward and focus on our upcoming pitch to lauren. Good things are on the verge of happening for us.

Chelsea: I just don’t think we should get our hopes up, not after what I pulled last time I worked for her. I mean, I basically stole from her. And when we pitched lauren our idea, she made it very clear that she’s not willing to just ignore that.

Chloe: She also made it very clear that she was willing to consider giving you another chance. She sees how hard you are trying to get your life back on track, and making a break from adam, putting that toxic relationship behind you — that is a big part of it. It is proof that you are serious about starting fresh, and i think lauren sees that.

Chelsea: It doesn’t mean she’s gonna be willing to trust me again.

Chloe: Stop it. Okay?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: I believe in you. I believe in us, and now you need to start doing the same. You have to have high hopes and start dreaming big because no one out there is going to hand us anything. We need to go out there, and we need to get things for ourselves.

Moses: I don’t know how this happened. I mean, every day I’ve been thinking about what I want to get faith for valentine’s day. I’ve just been going along with school and my internship, thinking it over, and then, bam, the day is here and I’ve — I’ve got nothing.

Nick: No pressure, huh?

Moses: [ Sighs ]

Faith: Please, mom, you’ve got to help. This is a crisis.

Sharon: Okay, first of all, calm down. This is the good kind of problem to have. Actually, it’s not a problem at all. Finding the perfect gift for a person you care about can be fun.

Moses: I just kept figuring it would come to me when I least expected it, but when it got down to actually going to the store and picking the perfect thing…that just never happened. And now there’s, like, no time left.

Nick: Well, you obviously care about my daughter, and, uh, I think it says a lot that you’re willing to come to her father to get the perfect gift for her. That requires a certain amount of —

Moses: Desperation?

Nick: I was gonna say bravery.

Moses: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: Look, I think if we put our heads together, we can come up with some good ideas.

Faith: You made me close my eyes so I could feel him with my whole body and really see the music. It was like magic.

Moses: Yeah. It felt that way, too, when my dad first played his album for me. And then it felt like I was listening to it all over again when I showed him to you. Feeling it through your heart, hearing it through your ears. Yeah. You nailed it — like magic.

Chloe: I love the direction you’re going with that. I feel like that could be the showpiece for the whole line.

Chelsea: Lauren did seem to like the idea of an exclusive new collection just for fenmore’S.

Adam: Well, we don’t need to figure it all out right now. We agreed that we would play it by ear.

Sally: Yeah, and I am perfectly fine with that. I mean, after all, this is just a business lunch. It’s a perfectly normal thing for ceos and coos to do.

Chelsea: Well, look who it is. The two of you are spending a lot of time together lately.

Adam: Well, that’s ’cause sally is my new coo.

Sally: I mean, we can’t spend all the time in the office, as much as I love all the energy and sparks that are flying around there.

Adam: Anyway, what is going on with you two? I hear you met with lauren for a possible collaboration.

Chloe: Yeah. We were just actually working on our final pitch, and it’s going rather well, if I do say so myself.

Sally: Mm, well, good luck with that. As someone, you know, who worked with lauren, I know what a stickler she can be, so make sure you cross all your t’S.

Chelsea: Oh, thanks, but I’ve worked with lauren before, too. We know exactly what she wants and what she needs.

Victoria: At what?

Ashland: A little office redecoration.

Victoria: I think you must have bought everything that the florist had.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] Nothing is too extravagant to show you how much I love you and how grateful I am to have you in my life.

Victor: Well, thank you for the update. Well, I know you were reluctant to go down there in the first place, but I knew that the information you would unearth would be invaluable. Thank you for doing it. See you soon.

Nikki: Who was that?

Victor: Michael baldwin calling from peru. He has some more information about ashland locke.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: Good morning.

Amanda: Happy valentine’s day.

Devon: Oh, my gosh.

Amanda: That was not the reaction that I was expecting.

Devon: I’m — you’re so generous for doing that, and I’m terrible ’cause I’ve had so much going on, I forgot. I’m so sorry.

Amanda: Hey, no, no, no, don’t do that. It is totally fine. I know how worried you’ve been about dominic.

Devon: Yeah, I know, but it’s — there’s no point — i know there’s no point for any of us to be worried or to speculate until we get the test results back. It’s just — it’s easier said than done. Because all I keep doing is thinking about dominic crying when he was getting the test and seeing the fear in his eyes and him looking up at us like he’s asking, “why are you letting this happen to me?”

Amanda: [ Sighs ] I know how worried you must have been because he didn’t understand what was happening. But you care about that kid more than anything in this world, and you are doing right by him. So I know he’s in the best possible hands.

Adam: That is a good point. But if you didn’t do it, then who did?

Sally: I don’t know. Chelsea?

Adam: That’s highly doubtful.

Adam: Well, there is only one way to find out.

Sally: What?

Adam: Well, we both have been cleared. It’s from one of the advertisers. It’s a little valentine’s day stunt.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Cool. Then I guess we are free to enjoy this swag. Might be a little too early for champagne, but I could definitely go for one of these chocolate-covered strawberries because I did not eat breakfast.

Adam: Yeah, yeah, that’s probably a good idea.

Sally: Mm-hmm.

Adam: Um…I — actually, I have a work gift for you.

Sally: Well, I believe that is allowed.

Adam: The pr team is putting together a press release announcing your new title — sally spectra, formerly the face of newman fashion, is now the coo of newman media.

Sally: If you think my becoming coo is some kind of gift that you’re giving me, then we seriously need to talk.

Ashland: This is amazing.

Victoria: The symbol on the ring is a crest of a scottish lord named roger loch. I know it’s not your given name, but I think that it represents who you are now.

Ashland: You — you researched the name and then tracked this down?

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: Hmm.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] I will cherish this forever. There are a dozen reasons that i don’t deserve your love, but i thank god every day that you came into my life.

Victor: Well, it seems that michael baldwin found out that the cash flow from ashland’s shell company to his clinic in peru doubled just before ashland and victoria went there for his experimental treatment.

Nikki: I don’t know why that would be considered suspicious. I mean, company cash flow increases and decreases all the time.

Victor: Under normal circumstances, you’d be right. In this case, I smell a rat. Something about ashland’s story does not add up.

Nikki: I don’t understand why you’re stirring things up with ashland and victoria. Today of all days. Do you even know what today is?

Victor: You think I would forget valentine’s day? Do you think I’d forget the day in which I can show you my love again?

Nikki: Good answer. And if that’s true, you will put aside your cloak-and-dagger maneuvering and take me out to a romantic lunch.

Victor: I adore you. But before I do, I’m gonna take you down to the stables.

Nikki: Victor newman, what have you done?

Victoria: Thank you again for the beautiful flowers.

Ashland: Oh, I’m sorry, the bouquets were simply to set the stage.

Victoria: There’s more?

Ashland: After your gift? Are you kidding? I can’t let you outdo me.

Adam: You misunderstood. When I said “gift,” I was talking about the press release announcing your title. I would never “gift” you a job. It was the wrong choice of words, okay? I was thrown off by the valentine’s day misunderstanding.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] It’s fine. I was just giving you a hard time. I know exactly what you mean. If I was that thin-skinned, frankly, I don’t deserve to be coo. But I do actually have a very important question, which is why I asked for this meeting.

Adam: Okay, shoot.

Sally: Before we approve a press release, I need to know this — what exactly are you expecting from me? Because I know we already got ashland and victoria’s approval for me to be coo, but, I mean, can we specify the duties a bit more? ‘Cause this position could mean a wide range of things. What do you want from me? Is this an equal partnership? Do I have my own autonomy and agency? Or are you just looking for a “yes” woman?

Adam: [ Clears throat ]

Lily: Okay, okay. You know that today is still a work day.

Billy: I am trying to work right now.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Wait, I feel like I’m forgetting something. Where’s my phone?

Billy: Hey, don’t worry about all that kind of stuff. Today is the most romantic holiday of the year. We work from home, which means we get to do things that nobody gets to know about.

Devon: No, no, actually, he had to get a bone marrow aspiration yesterday, and now we’re waiting to hear the results from that.

Billy: Yeah, devon, if you got somewhere to be, we can — we can do this another time.

Devon: No, no, it’s — I’m gonna be thinking about him no matter what, and there’s nothing more that any of us can do, so it’s — it’s fine. And I’d honestly like the company if you guys don’t mind.

Ashland: Yes, and victoria gave me this ring. It’s a — it’s the loch family signet from ancestors in scotland..

Victor: Look at that. Now, that’s very interesting, considering you have no relation to the lochs in scotland.

Victoria: Oh, that’s not the point, daddy. The ring is about who he is now. It represents who he is and who we are as a married couple and as business partners at newman/locke.

Ashland: It’s about the future. It’s a symbol of a path forward that I was less optimistic about until recently.

Victor: Yes, of course. Well, I think this calls for a toast, okay?

Victoria: Yes.

Victor: To ashland’s miraculous recovery, an answer to all our prayers.

Victoria: I couldn’t have asked for a better valentine’s day gift.

Devon: So I know we were talking about how doing a joint venture between hamilton-winters and chancellor would be a great way to honor katherine and neil, but we didn’t really get much more into it.

Lily: Yeah, I know. So here’s what I’m thinking. Um, you have a streaming service and we have content, so what if we use your streaming service to launch a podcast for us? And we want the podcast to be educational and inspirational and, you know, even have ones that are centered around music.

Devon: Yeah. I mean, in theory, that sounds all great. I love the concept of it. I want to hear specifics, though, on what would the podcasts be about, like the topics.

Billy: Do you mind if I jump in here real quick?

Lily: No, yeah, please.

Billy: Um…so lily knows that I’ve had a few sleepless nights lately, and last night was one of them that I was up for a lot of the night, and i had a bunch of ideas bouncing around the old noggin. I think I might have landed on something that would be perfect for this.

Devon: Really?

Billy: Yeah.

Devon: That’s great. Let’s hear it.

Adam: I am not looking to be “yes’d” to death. Nor am I searching for coo arm candy. I want your input. I value your point of view. And I like to be challenged. That’s what excites me about this partnership is that you don’t hold back.

Sally: You want me to be your public-facing business partner even though I’ve never run a media company before?

Adam: Absolutely. Because in part, I see similarities between the media business and the fashion world.

Sally: Such as?

Adam: News and clothes are both essential products, right? Designers want people to wear their clothes and media companies need people to read or watch their content. I mean, that is why you’ve been partly successful at building the fashion platform. You know how to attract people. Right? It’s all about enticement. It’s about seduction. And that’s why I think, um — i know that you could shine.

Sally: Well, I’m not gonna disagree with you.

Adam: I didn’t think that you would.

Sally: I also know my way around a spreadsheet and I can crunch the hell out of a budget, but, yes, you’re right. Convincing people that they want something, it’s my superpower.

Adam: Look, I admire your confidence, but I do not want you to get the impression that this is going to be easy. We’re gonna have to answer to victoria and ashland, and all of that is gonna be under victor’s watchful eye, so we can’t have any missteps. We have to be at the top of our game because any false move and my sister’s gonna use that as an excuse to kick us both to the curb.

Sally: Huh. No pressure, huh?

Adam: Yes, and despite the comparisons I just made about fashion and news, I mean, getting people to actually read or watch a story’s a lot harder than getting them to look at fashion gossip or ogle a wedding dress. There are a lot of outlets that are vying for eyeballs, so becoming the go-to place for news is becoming more and more challenging, so we have to be the best.

Sally: We’ll hire the best story-tellers. Because I don’t care if it’s business news or politics or, yes, a wedding dress, a good story is a good story. And at the end of the day, that is what hooks people.

Adam: Well said. You have good instincts. Not to mention a lot of passion. I was right…that you would be a natural for this job.

Nikki: Victor transformed one of the stalls in our stables, complete with saddle, bridle, reins, and a custom carved sign with the name of the new inhabitant, sparks.

Victoria: Who is sparks?

Nikki: A gorgeous 5-year-old thoroughbred who we will meet in the spring. Actually, his real name is firewalker, but they call him sparks. But your father continues to spoil me with the most spectacular horses.

Ashland: Seeing the smile on your face when you talk about his gift to you shows clearly that he knows the way to your heart.

Nikki: Ah, he always has and always will.

Victoria: Dad isn’t the only one who understands and appreciates his wife.

Victor: Just wonderful to see how much in love you seem.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] In love we “seem”? I mean, yeah, of course we’re in love.

Victor: Oh, I just thought, you know, to tell you that it warms my heart. My daughter’s happiness means everything to me.

Billy: Look, first of all, you know me well enough, right? You know a lot about my past. And I just want to start by saying that your sister is amazing, and she makes me want to be a better person. And look, man, I got it pretty good, right? And yet I still have these thoughts and feelings run around my head because, well, it’s not easy, and I’m taking it upon myself to try and be a better human being. I’m gonna try and do what I can. And life isn’t easy. We make mistakes. We lose our jobs. We — we lose loved ones. People get hurt. And I’m thinking I can’t be the only one going through this kind of stuff, so the idea is a platform of podcasts with the unifying theme of bettering oneself. Each series specifically designed and centered around health and wellness — both physical and mental. And we have an opportunity to really maybe help people and put something good out into the world, and I think, above all, neil and katherine would really appreciate that, and I think they would really love to see us all working together on that, so that’s it.

Devon: Wow. I — I couldn’t agree more with that. I love it. I love the fact that you’ve taken something personal and you’ve applied it to other people’s lives, too.

Lily: Exactly, which is why i love this idea so much.

Devon: Yeah. Nah, man, you — you’re really thinking big.

Lily: So what should be our next step?

Devon: Uh…the next step would be me taking it to my team, but then at the end of the day, it’s my call, and I can’t wait to get started on it. I really can’t, ’cause as you said, this is truly the perfect way to honor katherine and neil. They would have loved the concept about reaching out to people and helping them better themselves. So, you know, this would also be a good thing to get moses working on as part of his internship.

Lily: Oh, yeah, I love that idea.

Devon: Yeah?

Lily: Yeah.

Devon: That’s what family does. No, I’m excited, guys. I’m excited to work with both of you on it.

Lily: Okay.

Devon: Really.

Lily: Good. Well, let’s hope this leads to many more joint ventures.

Lily: No, amanda will understand. You’ve had a lot on your mind.

Devon: Yeah, I know. She does understand, which is why I really want to do this.

Lily: Yeah.

Billy: Well, a little romance never hurts a relationship.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: I know.

Lily: Right? You got your emotions out and your stream-of-consciousness recordings, used it as inspiration for your pitch. I mean, you know I was worried when you told me you couldn’t sleep, so…

Billy: No, I get it. I know both you and jack were — were thinking that this was about chanccomm and adam and victor, but it’s not.

Lily: I know, I know, and I’m sorry that my mind went there. I can see this might be a positive thing.

Billy: I think it is. And it feels really good. You know what else feels really good? Where we were right before your brother knocked on that door.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Lily: Uh-huh. It’s my woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Amanda: No. No, you are home too soon.

Devon: No, you’re home too soon. What are you doing?

Amanda: I told you you didn’t have to make the effort.

Devon: I know. I appreciate you saying that, but I wasn’t gonna let today go by without doing something to show you how much I love you.

Amanda: Well, same.

Devon: I thought you were going to work.

Amanda: Well, I needed to make you a really amazing, nice dinner to help you relax and get your mind off of your worries. Mm. But I have to tell you that I am a pretty good cook. I’m just — I’m not a tidy one, so you’re not allowed to go back into that kitchen, or any effort to help you relax would fly straight out the window.

Devon: Why is that? Did you make a big mess?

Amanda: Oh, a huge one.

Devon: That’s okay. I don’t mind helping you clean up. You got a little bit right there, actually.

Amanda: Mm.

Devon: Good for me, yeah. Got something here.

Sally: I get that there will be plenty of obstacles to overcome, but I find that challenge exciting. I don’t know, there’s something about feeling a bit apprehensive that gets my adrenaline going. And when I woke up this morning, I will admit, I was a little nervous. I was wondering if I was a little too in over my head, but then I gave myself a pep talk, i put on a power suit, and i decided to give it my all. I mean, what do I have to lose? I’d rather try and fail than not try at all.

Adam: You do not have to worry about failing. You’ve got this.

Nikki: For a romantic lunch, can’t really say I had your undivided attention.

Victor: My darling, I was not going to ignore our daughter, you know?

Nikki: I think you were more interested in ashland, and i worry that you’re looking for something that isn’t there. Or something that should remain in the past, like his other secrets.

Victor: Well, whatever’s going on in peru with that clinic is very much in the present.

Nikki: Do you remember how disruptive it was for the family the first time you dug into ashland’s past? And then, ironically, you were the one who accepted him and welcomed him into the family.

Victor: Sweetheart, you’ve known me long enough to know that I am a chess player and therefore, I look many moves ahead of anyone else.

Nikki: Yes, I know. I just don’t understand what you’re trying to accomplish by digging into his treatment. And victoria is finally happy. And do you doubt his love for her? Why are you looking for trouble?

Victor: Sweetheart, I’m not looking for trouble. But if something is going on to ashland locke regarding that clinic in peru, I’m gonna find out about it.

Victoria: You know, you really haven’t said much since we left society. Was something bothering you at lunch?

Ashland: You must have noticed victor’s eagle eye trained on me.

Victoria: Yes, I did, but it’s just because he’s relieved that you’re doing so much better. We were all braced for the worst.

Ashland: Maybe. I just think it was something more specific. Victoria, the reason your father asked me to meet him at the ranch was to question me about my experimental treatment. It seemed innocent enough at first, but with your father, I’ve come to understand that nothing is innocent.

Victoria: What are you talking about?

Ashland: There’s something you need to know. The reason I knew about the protocol was because I had a colleague who was treated at the clinic in peru a few years ago for cancer.

Victoria: You knew about the clinic before we went there?

Ashland: Yes. In fact, I gave them money when their funding was in jeopardy.

Victoria: But we researched options together. Are you saying that you were pretending to be learning about the protocol for the first time when you knew about it all along? I looked into possible connections that we would have with the clinic, and I checked the funding sources. Your name never came up.

Ashland: That’s because I set up the funding through a shell corporation.

Victoria: How did you not tell me this? You promised me in tuscany that there would be no more secrets between us. And now you’re saying that you kept this from me? How could you? With downy infusions, let the scent set the mood.

Ashland: The reason I didn’t tell you about my involvement in the clinic was because I was trying to protect you.

Victoria: From what exactly?

Ashland: I was concerned about the legal ramifications. I was trying to guard both you and newman/locke from any potential tax violation fallout. W– no, with plausible deniability. I didn’t even know if the treatment was going to work. But at the time, you were encouraging me to try anything and everything just to beat the cancer.

Victoria: Of course I did that, and I don’t regret that for one minute because look at you — look at how much better you’re doing.

Ashland: Okay, then be honest. If you had known about my involvement in the clinic, would you have told me not to pursue this treatment?

Victoria: I don’t know what to say to that because, once again, you haven’t given me the option.

Victoria: That is a very weak excuse. I would expect better from you.

Ashland: Listen to me, victoria. I love you more than anything in the world. I owe my life to you. I hate that I have to tell you this today — on valentine’s day of all days. Please forgive me.

Victoria: I don’t think it’s fair that you withheld this from me.

Ashland: I understand.

Victoria: Let’s keep them up and running at 60% capacity. Oh, except for the one in fort wayne. It’s too far away from the distribution center. We could find a way to re-purpose it or find a buyer.

Nikki: And the commercial developments in south carolina?

Victoria: If we can find a rate of return at 8%, let’s see. Otherwise, let’s sit on it for the next six months. The market will come back. We’ll make a profit. It’s just gonna take time. Is that all?

Nikki: Um, that is everything on my list, except for one thing.

Victoria: And what would that be?

Nikki: I have a question about the acquisition of a company called newman media.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] What do you want to know?

Nikki: Are we gonna fold their finance and marketing staff into our existing teams?

Victoria: You know, before i say anything about that, i should — I should ask ashland what he thinks. I just want to make sure we’re both on the same page.

Nikki: Okay.

Victoria: You know, he is doing much better. He’s — he’s healthier, he’s stronger, and he really seems to want to sink his teeth into this part of the business. He’s particularly interested in how the merger plays out.

Nikki: Huh. That means he doesn’t trust adam.

Victoria: Can you blame him?

Nikki: No, I can’t even believe adam’s on our executive team or that you agreed to bring him on board.

Victoria: Well, I really didn’t have much of a choice. Dad insisted on it if I wanted to acquire newman media.

Nikki: Well, I hope that this recent show of humility is sincere and that he’s come to terms with the idea of answering to you, but…

Victoria: Mom, I know. Trust me. Ashland and I, we share your concerns. And believe, we’re gonna be keeping a very close eye on adam.

Adam: Hello. No victoria?

Ashland: She’s out to lunch with nikki. She’ll be back in a few minutes if you need her.

Adam: Well, I can talk to you, unless I’m interrupting. Working on something big?

Ashland: I was just reading a report on a new water treatment facility. It’s powered solely by renewable energy. The technology is amazing. It could be a great growth opportunity for us. I’m looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

Adam: Well, your health must be improving. Getting back to work, looking forward to the future.

Ashland: I prefer to think of it the other way around. I think my health is improving because I’m working.

Adam: Well, either way, that’s a good sign. You know, I was always glad to get your input on newman media as a member of the board. It’s gonna be even better now that we are on the same team.

Ashland: Are we?

Adam: Sure, I look forward to your input and your perspective on the business.

Ashland: I’m glad to hear that’s your attitude, because now that newman media is part of newman/locke, you will definitely be hearing from me.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Oh, my god. You’ve got to be kidding me.

Billy: Thank you. Hey, how goes it?

Lily: Hey, not great. You know that exec in accounting that I wanted to promote.

Billy: Whitney? What’s going on with her?

Lily: She’s resigning. I thought I sold her on my vision of chancellor, but she’s taking a job in salt lake city.

Billy: Okay, well, it’s all good. You’ll find someone.

Lily: I need some help.

Billy: Alright, well, I’m all yours. Let me just finish up here, and then I’ll head home to our place and we can figure out if there’s any internal candidates that are right for the job.

Lily: Uh, you know what? I’m gonna meet you there later. There’s — there’s something i have to do first.

Billy: Okay, I’ll see you in a bit.

Billy: Sally. Sorry, I did not recognize you without the ridiculous glasses or fake wig on or without the camera pointed directly at me, which, let’s be honest, was the most important part of your ensemble, wasn’t it?

Billy: I really don’t want to hear it because I don’t care. It’s clear to me that the only reason why adam put you in second-in-command is because you will stoop to whatever level he asks you to.

Sally: Is that the reason lily chose to hire you?

Billy: You helped him slander an innocent man by secretly recording —

Sally: Okay, wait. Hold on. First of all, I don’t think you’re using the word “slander” correctly. And secondly, if you’re talking about yourself, you’re definitely not using the word “innocent” —

Billy: You tried to capture me on video in a compromising situation. Did you not, sally?

Sally: Yes, but your whole act was a scam. You set us up. You pretended to be this gambling, drunken mess in hopes that adam would fall for it and publish a story, which he never did.

Billy: Because I stopped it. Because I took the high road.

Sally: But until you had this attack of conscience, you tried to entrap him. So where do you get off playing the victim?

Ashland: You must be very excited.

Adam: About what, exactly?

Ashland: Your expanding universe. There are so many new possibilities for newman media.

Adam: More resources don’t always translate into more opportunities.

Ashland: Come on, that’s exactly what you were hoping for when you bid on chanccomm yourself.

Adam: Not exactly.

Ashland: Okay, true enough. You probably weren’t anticipating working for your sister and you probably thought that you were gonna be running some independent venture, but I-I assure you, this is a scintillating time to be part of newman/locke. Great things are happening.

Adam: Well, you can consider me scintillated.

Ashland: I believe you will look back on this moment and be glad you came aboard when you did.

Adam: Well, I think that goes both ways. I think you and victoria will look back and be very excited that I stuck around.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] Ooh, well, there’s that famous newman confidence.

Adam: Hey, I’m just being serious. ‘Cause I actually have a proven track record of success in this field. And I have done a damn good job with newman media, and you have not had any complaints about my work.

Ashland: Fair enough, but the situation has changed.

Adam: Yes, but the work remains the same.

Ashland: Still, you are going to have to make some adjustments. You’ve been the — what, the sole decision-maker for a very long time. That’s not the case anymore.

Adam: Yes, I have accepted the fact that my father wants more of a say. And victoria will occasionally want to weigh in, if, for no other reason, to remind me that she’s the boss.

Ashland: Not just your sister and not just occasionally. Adam, we own the company. We will be charting its course and giving you direction, not the other way around. Now, if you’re not comfortable with that, that’s fine. I would suggest you make a decision and move on.

[Music: “I swear”]

Nikki: I hope you’re not coming to me to give you advice on how to handle jill because that is not one of my strengths.

Lily: Oh, no, no. No, no, no.

Nikki: Ah.

Lily: No, jill and I get along great. We’re fine. That’s not it.

Nikki: Oh, good. Alright, then. Now, how can I help you?

Lily: Well, there have just been so many times in the last couple of months that I have been dying to pick up the phone and call katherine.

Nikki: Yeah, I feel that way practically every day.

Lily: I’m sure. So I figured next best thing would be to talk to somebody who was close to her and knew her best and just see if there’s anything she’d want me to know as I take over her company.

Nikki: Well, I would love to talk about my old friend. What is it that you want to hear about?

Lily: Well, I have this image of katherine as this, you know, tough-as-nails businesswoman who’s barking orders and decisive and never wrong.

Nikki: Well, she was wrong a lot over the years.

Lily: Well, yeah, I’m sure, but, I mean, the rest of that image, that’s — that was the real her, right?

Nikki: Uh, she didn’t put a show on for anybody. Here’s something you might not know. She never set out to be a business mogul.

Lily: No?

Nikki: No, the company became her responsibility when phillip died. And in the beginning, she was content to let other people run it, but after a while, she thought she could run it just as well as they can, so she took over and the rest is history.

Lily: God, that must have been hard. I mean, there were so few women running corporations at the time.

Nikki: She was definitely ahead of her time. And she loved it when people underestimated her.

[ Laughs ] She liked to mix things up. She had fun shaking things up, you know? That would be her advice to you. Have fun. I mean, I’m sure you have an idea of what direction you want the company to go in.

Lily: I do. I definitely have a vision. It’s just [Sighs] You know, chancellor has such a rich history with amazing business legends that have run it, including my dad. And I just… I feel like it’s presumptuous of me to think that I’m anywhere near their league.

Nikki: Oh, trust me, you are. Your father was the best mentor you could’ve had.

Lily: Yeah. Another person I wish I could pick up the phone and call.

Nikki: Well, I’m sure you still hear his voice because i do. Trust what he says. Neil and katherine are watching over you. You’re gonna be just fine. Oh, and please don’t tell anybody I said this, but…trust jill’s judgment. She knows what she’s doing when it comes to chancellor, anyway. And she would never have put you in charge if she wasn’t sure that you were ready. You’re gonna make all of them proud, I know it.

Billy: Well, this has been very entertaining, trying to watch you take the high road. It’s kind of like watching those videos of cats playing the piano. You can’t really believe what you’re seeing, but you can’t take your eyes off it either.

Sally: Did you just compare me to a piano-playing cat?

Billy: Yeah, I don’t trust cats either. The point I’m trying to make is that adam cost me my reputation and my job, which is the only reason I put that plan in motion in the first place. And I knew it would work because he loves to see people suffer. Wouldn’t be surprised if he had a fistful of popcorn as he watched the videos that you filmed.

Sally: I don’t know the person you’re describing.

Billy: No? Adam? About yay high, beady, untrustworthy eyes, brown hair to hide his devil horns on his head.

Sally: You’re wrong. Adam felt bad that your life was such a wreck, just like I did.

Billy: Yeah, but you still found the strength to keep filming me.

Sally: I don’t think adam would have taken advantage of your suffering, which wasn’t real anyway, ’cause you’re obviously fine now. You’ve got this great new gig and you’re happy, which was the whole point of calling off your little scheme, right? To let go of the resentment that was eating you alive, right? Or am I mistaken?

Billy: No, that is accurate.

Sally: Okay, so then why can’t you just be happy that we’ve all moved on?

Billy: You want me to be happy that adam is now running chanccomm, the company that i built?

Sally: If you have an issue with that, I would take it up with victoria, ’cause keeping adam in charge was her call. Maybe knowing that will make it a little easier for you to swallow.

Billy: You know what? It will, because I know how victoria really feels about her brother, so I can’t imagine this little situation is gonna last very long. Good luck, sally.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: I don’t understand why you’re taking this tone with me. We have always had a pretty solid working relationship.

Ashland: I totally agree. I hope we get to continue that relationship. I ju– I just think it’s important that you know where things stand. This is an excellent opportunity for you.

Adam: That has been made abundantly clear. My father has mentioned the word “opportunity” 20 times when he told me why he’s selling the company.

Ashland: He’s a wise man. And he sees the potential you have right at your fingertips. But I need you to understand this — we’re willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but any insubordination, any challenge to our authority on your part would be a major mistake. We will not tolerate it.

Adam: “We”? You mean you and victoria?

Ashland: Yes.

Adam: Are you guys one entity now?

Ashland: As far as you’re concerned, yes.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Thought you were more of an advisor. Now you’re talking as if you’re her equal partner in running newman/locke.

Ashland: That’s exactly what I am.

Adam: Hmm.

Ashland: I presume that’s not a problem for you.

Adam: That’s between you and your wife.

My issue is your change in attitude towards me, ’cause we’ve always gotten along and now you’re taking this hard-line approach with me. I mean, is this because I’m in less favor with victor these days? I’m easier to dismiss?

Ashland: I can promise you i have not given one moment of thought or consideration to your relationship with your father. This is business. The world doesn’t revolve around you. And now neither does newman media.

Adam: Well, I can’t wait to show you how wrong you are on that score.

Ashland: We shall see.

Victoria: What’s going on here?

Billy: Hey, there she is. I hope you remembered my extra verde sauce for my enchilada because I remember your pear tart, right there.

Lily: Of course. Thank you. I’ll never forget your extra sauce.

Billy: Mmm. Well-oiled machine, aren’t we? You okay? What are you thinking?

Lily: I don’t know, I just keep thinking about that girl from accounting. I just can’t believe that she would jump ship like that, you know? How is that gonna look from the outside?

Billy: I wouldn’t worry too much about it at all. To be honest, I think it’s a compliment.

Lily: How is that a compliment?

Billy: Because she got passed over for the top job, and if she thought that you were gonna crash and burn as chancellor’s ceo, then she would’ve stuck around to swoop in and save the day. But she didn’T. She bounced, which means she believes that you’re gonna be around for a very, very long time. And if she wanted to, you know, climb the ladder, she had to make a move.

Lily: Yeah, I guess that’s true. And I do believe that our headhunters will find some great people.

Billy: There you go. There’s the silver lining. And when you’ve whittled it all down, I will be there to help you pick the right person that’s excited to work with you because working at chancellor should be fun.

Lily: That’s funny, that’s what nikki told me.

Billy: When did you talk to nikki?

Lily: Uh, just now, at society. I went to her because I wanted to see if she had any advice that she thought katherine would give me. I’m sure that sounds weird, right?

Billy: No, no. To be honest, I’ve sought nikki’s advice many times over the years.

Lily: Really?

Billy: Yeah, whether it’s about victoria or the kids or sobriety, and if you want any insight on katherine, nikki’s the one to talk to.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, she just told me that katherine took so much joy in running the company. Not that it was a party every day, but that she never lost sight of how much she loved the role.

Billy: Well, I believe that you can do the exact same thing. Now, be honest with me. Why did you go talk to nikki in the first place?

Lily: Well, I mean, you know, even though I’m honored to have this job, it’s overwhelming. I…I just want to make sure that I can match up to, you know, katherine’s savvy and my dad’s intellect and jill’s confidence in me.

Billy: I know you can.

Lily: Well, I don’t really need a pep talk. I’m just being honest with how i feel.

Billy: I get it. I appreciate that.

Lily: Well, let me know if you don’t want to hear my concerns.

Billy: Why wouldn’t I?

Lily: Because it’s the job that you wanted.

Ashland: Nothing to worry about, just battle lines being drawn, sabres being rattled.

Victoria: I don’t like the sound of that.

Adam: Mm, it was nothing. We were actually just making a friendly bet on how long I’ll be able to stick around under this new regime.

Victoria: Well, I’ll take the under.

Victoria: Some of us actually have work to do, so if there’s nothing else.

Adam: Uh, I actually came by to let you know I hired a coo.

Victoria: Really? Who?

Adam: Sally spectra.

Victoria: Well, she’s a fashion designer. I mean, a very good one, but still, coo?

Adam: She has a business background. She ran a fashion house in la. She even held her own against the big boys out there. She has a unique perspective because she is creative and practical.

Ashland: Don’t forget calculating.

Victoria: You remember what she did to our niece, don’t you?

Adam: I do. Still unclear on how summer was harmed.

Victoria: Well, I’m sure that nick could clarify that for you.

Adam: Regardless of that event, she would like to move past that. She wants a clean slate. We have that in common.

Victoria: And this is why you think that she would make a good coo?

Adam: It’s one of the many reasons. And I feel strongly that I have made the right choice. So just so I’m clear — do i have the autonomy to hire and fire who I want or do I need to come to you with every decision that I make?

Victoria: You have leeway to make personnel decisions. Let’s just call it autonomy within reason. And as for your coo, I’m fine with it. You’re gonna have to train her and mentor her yourself, of course.

Adam: Well, thanks for your time. See you around the water cooler.

Ashland: You’re really okay with sally being in such an influential position? I mean, she designed a lovely wedding dress, but overseeing operations…

Victoria: Sally’s an opportunist. She’s also very reckless. Those are both traits that could work to our advantage over time.

Ashland: Two steps ahead of everybody again.

[ Chuckles ]

Victoria: So, tell me about the battle lines and the sabre rattling.

Ashland: Don’t worry about it.

[ Cellphone rings ]

[ Sighs ] It’s your father. Hello, victor.

Victor: Hello, ashland. Would you mind coming by the ranch and have a talk with me?

Ashland: Well, I happen to be free right now. I’ll be right over.

Victor: Thank you.

Victoria: You’re going to meet with my father.

Ashland: Yes. I’ve been summoned.

Victoria: What does he want to talk about?

Ashland: I have no idea.

Billy: You know you can talk to me about anything, okay? And I really don’t like the fact that you would hide anything from me.

Lily: I know, it just feels very insensitive to complain about the demands of a job that, you know, you feel like you could do in your sleep.

Billy: There’s so many things wrong with that, I’m not even sure where to start. First of all, I haven’t been sleeping at all lately, so there’s that.

Lily: Okay, I’m trying to be serious right now.

Billy: Yes, and so am I. I do not hold a grudge because my mother picked you to run chancellor. But, yes, I did want the job, but you are the right person for this position, and I am very happy to be a team player.

Lily: Yeah, but we’re not co-captains.

Billy: That’s okay. Believe me, I am very excited about what we are building here. And as far as these moments of self-doubt, you don’t have to worry about that. And I will say that katherine, jill, neil — I’m sure they all felt the exact same way when they took over at chancellor. But you don’t have to compare yourself to them because you are the one and only lily winters — the smartest, savviest, strongest, sexiest ceo this company has ever had.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Well, I know I said that i didn’t need a pep talk, but that was pretty great, so thank you.

Billy: You’re welcome.

Nikki: Hi, darling.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart. How was your lunch with victoria?

Nikki: Very productive.

Victor: Good.

Nikki: I think the improvement in ashland’s health is really helping her. She’s very relaxed and focused and doesn’t have a cloud of worry over her head.

Victor: That’s good to know.

Nikki: I also ran into lily.

Victor: Oh. The new ceo of chancellor?

Nikki: Jill was so smart to bring her back to town to put her talent to good use. I mean, just the fact that she knows how to rein billy now and then shows her managerial skills.

Victor: But, sweetheart, the fact that she got involved with billy boy abbott in the first place doesn’t speak well of her judgment, does it?

Nikki: Well, they’re happy, so I can’t begrudge them that, especially since victoria has moved on and is happily remarried.

Victor: Yeah. By the way, ashland is on the way over.

Nikki: Oh. Why?

Victor: Just want to have a conversation with him one-on-one.

Nikki: About what?

Victor: Not important.

Nikki: Well, then tell me.

Victor: You promise me, not a word of this to victoria, okay?

Nikki: Alright, yes, i understand.

Victor: It seems that the clinic where ashland got his treatment in peru was not a clinic he just sort of stumbled upon. Turns out, he has known about it for years. Has been sending money to it for years.

Nikki: I don’t know what that means. I mean, has he been making charitable donations?

Victor: Nothing charitable about it. It was a tax haven. A tax-dodging scheme. Send him in. Has victoria ever mentioned anything to you about ashland’s connection to the clinic?

Nikki: No, I don’t think she knows anything about this.

Victor: You know, I find it just absolutely miraculous that you just found this clinic in the nick of time.

Ashland: Well, in truth, victor, it was a little more than just luck.

Victor: Really? Kids can change minds,

Adam: Everything okay?

Sally: Yeah, it’s all good. Just ran into billy. Guy’s really starting to get on my nerves.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Really? I am a big fan, actually.

Sally: I just don’t understand how people can have everything more or less handed to them and still can’t be happy. And then when they find out about other people reaping the rewards of years of hard work, they resent it.

Adam: Look, I wouldn’t pay much attention to anything that billy abbot has to say.

Sally: That’s good advice. Where were you just now?

Adam: I went to see victoria.

Sally: Did you ask her about my becoming coo?

Adam: I did.

Sally: And? She’s not gonna let me have it, is she? All the newmans still hate me because of the summer thing, right?

Adam: Well, that did come up, actually.

Sally: I knew it. When am I gonna catch a break? Did you tell her that I’m working hard to prove myself?

Adam: I didn’t have much of a chance to get into that.

Sally: Okay, well, did you mention my business background?

Adam: I sure tried.

Sally: Well, I appreciate the effort. So does she not want me around at all? I mean, maybe there’s a lower position I could take? I can make myself practically invisible if that’s what I need to do to stay.

Adam: I’m afraid that won’t be possible.

Adam: You’re going to have to be very visible because you are going to be helping me run a major media conglomerate.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] Well, the truth is I knew what to say this time because I’ve lived through it. For most of my life, I’ve had this feeling of not meeting the expectations of the great john abbot or even my brother jack. Believe me, it was a waste of time.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: And I promise you that if my dad was still around, he would give you the same advice. You don’t have to emulate anyone. You do you. You have everything you need to succeed.

Lily: Yeah, nikki said that i can still hear my dad’s voice in my head, encouraging me and giving me confidence.

Billy: That’s good. Although it baffles me that you would be lacking in any confidence.

Lily: Well, I know I can do the job, I just…I don’t know, I have a little bit of anxiety.

Billy: I get that, and that’s natural, you know? That keeps you on your toes, so you don’t get complacent.

Lily: And it can also keep you up at night. Are we ever gonna talk about your insomnia?

Billy: We already have.

Lily: Okay, you say that nothing is bothering you, but if you are having trouble sleeping, then clearly there’s something going on.

Ashland: I was aware of the clinic before I got sick. In fact, because of a strange set of circumstances, I was one of their benefactors.

Victor: Wow. How did that happen?

Ashland: A few years ago, i had a colleague who was very ill. He was at the clinic being treated. The results were fantastic, but the clinic itself was going through some kind of a financial crisis. They were in jeopardy of losing their funding.

Victor: Sure.

Ashland: I saw it as a matter of life and death. So I wrote a check.

Victor: Just like that?

Ashland: Well, it wasn’t quite that simple. You know, international law, as you well know, being what it is. No, my accountant had to get creative with getting the money down there — shell corporations, wire transfers, that sort of thing.

Victor: Right.

Ashland: But we kept it afloat.

Victor: I think it’s a fantastic story, really. I mean, here you are, you bailed out this clinic, and a few years later, it saves your life.

Ashland: I like to think of it as karma.

Victor: Yes. Well, I kind of agree with you. Now, victoria never told me about this.

Ashland: Victoria doesn’t know.

Victor: Oh.

Ashland: I intentionally kept it from her.

Victor: And why is that?

Ashland: Technically, it wasn’t ethical.

[ Chuckles ] Why should I have to jump to the front of the line to get this treatment? But we managed to keep that part of it quiet. It didn’t become an issue. I just…I didn’t want victoria to worry that it might create some kind of obstacle.

Victor: Mm.

Ashland: She already has so much to worry about.

Victor: Oh, yeah, yeah. And we want to protect victoria above all else, you know. What can I du with less asthma?

Sally: I cannot believe that you let me think victoria rejected me becoming coo. I thought I was fired and out on the street. How could you do something so mean?

Adam: I know. I know I shouldn’t have. I guess I just imagined when you found out you go the job that you would be so happy you’d throw your arms around me like you did the other day.

Sally: I thought we agreed that we shouldn’t even be thinking along those lines.

Adam: You are right. So forget I mentioned it.

Sally: It’s forgotten.

Billy: You have enough on your plate. We don’t need to worry about my sleep schedule.

Lily: Okay, our relationship is not one-sided, alright? If there’s something going on with you, then tell me, so I can do something to help.

Billy: You’ve already helped with this issue.

Lily: How?

Billy: By partnering with hamilton-winters on this podcast. Honestly, I am very excited about it. I can’t stop thinking about possible guests or concepts or content and how to market the show. I think it’s gonna be great.

Lily: Okay, but how does that help with your sleep pattern?

Billy: Because it’s a creative outlet. My creative juices are flowing, right? So there’s no room for stress or anxiety. I’m gonna sleep like a baby tonight.

Lily: And dream of podcasts?

Billy: Absolutely.

Lily: You done?

Billy: Thank you.

Nikki: Ashland left?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: Well, what’s the verdict?

Victor: I don’t know yet. He had an answer for everything. Something is off.

Nikki: Well, he had an answer for everything, that’s good.

Victor: Well, not really. You know, his answers were too glib, too polished. Troubles me.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] Hi, there. Scotch, neat, please.

[ Groans ]

[ Sighs ] Thank you so much.

[ Cellphone rings ] Mm. Yeah. An american is asking questions about me in peru. Is it — is he a journalist? Is he a private investigator? What does he want to know? Yeah, that’s not really an answer. No, no. This doesn’t change anything. Everything stays the same. We stick to the plan.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Oh, my god. I am so exhausted. I remember when the twins used to ask if they could fall asleep on the couch because they were too tired to go to bed and i thought it was so hilarious and now I know exactly how they felt. Are you ready to go to bed?

Billy: No, not — not yet. I’m still, um — still a little wired.

Lily: Wired? I thought the podcast project was gonna help you curb your insomnia.

Billy: It will. I promise it will, eventually. But right now I still got a bunch of thoughts running through my mind, and I think it’s better I kind of clear the slate a little bit before I lay in bed staring up at the ceiling, like I’ve been doing for the last little while.

Lily: You know, you keep saying that this isn’t a big deal, but it’s been going on for a few nights.

Billy: I don’t want you to worry about this, okay? Because I am not worried. This is just a little bit of a phase, and everything’s gonna be fine. Now, you jump into our bed, get all cozy, and I will see you there soon.

Lily: Okay. Well, don’t be too long.

Billy: I won’T.

[ Sighs ] What the hell is going on with you?

Abby: Do you think dominic woke up ’cause he could sense my anxiety and concern? I mean, babies are sensitive like that. They can pick up on those things.

Chance: Hey, let’s try to relax, okay? It’s all good. I doubt he’s picking up on your stress. He’s just not feeling well. That’s probably why he woke up, right? Let’s try not to worry. Now that he’s asleep, there’s nothing we can do. He’s gonna be totally fine.

Abby: You really think so?

Chance: I do. I mean, devon would not have gone home otherwise. Trust me. And when we get these latest test results, we’ll update him.

Abby: Just the waiting is so excruciating.

Chance: I know. I know. Look, I know it won’t be easy, but you should get some sleep.

Abby: I — I don’t know if i can.

Chance: Well, do me a favor and at least try.

Abby: My mind keeps going over all of these different scenarios, scenarios that would require a bone marrow aspiration. Chance, how did this happen? Dominic has been fine in every single one of his check-ups, and now his red blood cell count is so low that the doctor is jumping to these invasive tests? What if the procedure is painful? What if it causes an infection or an allergic reaction? I mean, those are all risks.

Chance: Hey, come here. We have to do our best to stay calm and to stay positive.

Abby: I’m just so scared.

[ Sighs heavily ]

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Chelsea, we have talked about this. Okay, we will always share a connection, but we’re in a different place now. And I think that is a great place. Don’t you think?

Chelsea: Sure.

Adam: Okay, well, then getting back together, even if there are some feelings between us, would be a mistake.

Adam: We will always be in each other’s lives, but I don’t know how to say this any plainer — there is no future between us.

Chelsea: [ Sighs heavily ]

Adam: You need to let go of the past and move on. My personal life is not your business anymore until it involves connor.

Chelsea: Are you falling for sally spectra?

Chelsea: You know, and for the record, sally doesn’t deserve you. I know the type. I’ve seen go-getters like her my whole life. They can’t see beyond what’s in it for them, and frankly, I am shocked that you haven’t been able to figure this out about her yet.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ] Chloe, hi. Oh, I’m so glad you picked up. Ohh. I can’t sleep. I was thinking we could go over our business plan for lauren? Oh. You’re up with bella? What kind of a horror movie did kevin watch with her to make her have nightmares like that? Are you serious? That would give me nightmares, too. What was kevin thinking? No. Go. Sorry. Go. Chance: Well, until we know exactly what it is, it’s no good to dwell over the worst-case scenarios, right? Look, I understand why you’re worried. I am, too. But we got to be strong for our boy, keep a positive mind-set.

Abby: Yeah. You’re right.

Chance: How about this? How about you go upstairs and take a nice, long, hot bath? Yeah? Maybe throw in some of those sweet-smelling things that you like. You know what I’m talking about? I bet it’ll help you wind down so you can get some sleep.

Abby: Yeah. A bath does sound nice. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

Chance: Yeah.

Abby: Thank you.

Chance: For what?

Abby: ‘Cause, I mean, you’re dealing with so much, and here you are taking care of me. It just means a lot to have you here to lean on.

Chance: That’s what we do for each other, right? And, abby, you have been just so patient and understanding with me while I work through all this. And that’s what we got to do. We got to keep leaning one each other and do what’s best for dom. That means do what’s best for us, too.

[ Sighs ]

[ Exhales heavily ] Hey, partner. Yeah, I, uh — I just want to apologize again for — for bailing earlier. You know, I’m sorry I couldn’t start today like we planned.

Rey: No apology needed. Really, man. Paul and I completely understand. Family trumps work every time. How’s the baby?

Chance: He’s okay. He’s okay. We’re, uh — we’re gonna know more in the morning after we get these results from the follow-up tests.

Rey: Good. Keep us in the loop.

Chance: I will. Um…hey, what’d I miss today? Did I miss anything, any new cases?

Rey: Actually, my day’s not over yet. We’re doing surveillance on a suspect in a series of robberies. I’m just getting some coffee now.

Chance: Really? Well, look, I — you know, I’m probably not gonna sleep much tonight. I keep thinking about this appointment in the morning. Abby’s about to crash. We got the nanny here. You want some company?

Rey: Are you sure?

Chance: Yeah. Oh, yeah. It’ll — it’ll be nice to have something else to focus on. One prilosec otc in the morning

Billy: So much for tip number one on getting a good night’s sleep. Nighty-night. Ahh. Process, reflect, and meditate on your thoughts. Process and reflect. What am I to process? I don’t feel like I have any fears. I don’t feel like there’s anything gnawing at me.

[ Sighs ] Meditate. Yeah. Let me see where that goes. Ahh. Okay.

[ Sighs ] Too lazy to type. Too wired to sleep. So all you get is the sound of your own soothing voice. Some would say you like the sound of your own voice. Those people would be right. At least I know somebody is listening. Okay, so, how do we start? Who are you?

[ Chuckles ] What are you? Me.

[ Sighs ] You…are a man that had everything… and then lost almost everything.

[ Sighs ] And then you got most of it back except for the one thing that you miss the most — your sweet baby girl delia. But what about all the other things that you lost? Because you were — because you were being an idiot, because you fought wars for no good reason, because you didn’t acknowledge what you had at the time. That is a tricky one. But that is a recipe for disaster. Have you learned anything? Have you learned anything?

Chance: You’re okay, buddy. You’re okay.

[ Chuckling ] Yeah, right? It’s all good. You’re okay. Look at you, little dude.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] I need you to be okay. You hear me? But don’t you worry. You don’t have to do this all by yourself. You can count on me, bud. I’m gonna do whatever I got to do to get you through this. I promise you that. Me and your mom. She loves you so much, man. She’s been here since the very beginning. She’s managed this whole crazy journey all by herself. But I’m here now. Mm-hmm. I’m here for you, and I’m here for her. And together we’re gonna make sure that you’re always okay. I just need you to trust me ’cause I’m doing everything i can to get back on track and make up for all that time I missed. So just be patient just for a little bit longer. I promise. I’m gonna be the best dad that i can be. Watch.

[ Breathes deeply ] You know, going back to the force and focusing on work, finding that sense of purpose. Yeah, I think that’s exactly what I need. I think that’s the answer to all this. So I can get back to where i need to be. So that you know that you can always count me.

[ Exhales heavily ]

Chelsea: Hey.

Rey: HeY.

Chelsea: I didn’t expect to see you here so late.

Rey: Yeah, I’m surprised to see you, too.

Chelsea: Oh, I came for some herbal tea. I need something to calm my mind. Too many crazy thoughts racing around in my head.

Rey: Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes my mind refuses to give me a break.

Chelsea: Well, it’s sweet of you to come help sharon close this place up.

Rey: Well, actually, sharon’s gone home for the night, and the barista’s gonna shut everything down. I’m looking at what could be a very long night on a stakeout. So I’m here for the complete opposite reason you are. I am trying to keep my mind stimulated, active, firing on all cylinders.

Chelsea: Hmm. Wow.

Rey: Yeah.

Chelsea: So, while the innocent citizens of genoa city are sleeping sound in their beds, you’re out fighting crime.

[ Chuckles ] That must make sharon really nervous, her husband out all night risking his life in potentially dangerous situations.

Rey: Well, sharon’s come to terms with the crazy hours, accepts it as part of the package. But risking my life may be a bit of an overstatement, especially tonight.

Chelsea: You know, I went on a stakeout once. Well, no — I mean, sort of a stakeout. I was a kid. I was with my mom. We were scoping out a mark, planning a con, figuring out the right angle to make it work.

Rey: I can’t imagine what that must have been like, with your mom involving you in all of her criminal activities. That must have been pretty scary for a little kid.

Chelsea: Not really. I didn’t know anything different, you know? It was just…normal. Dodging a bill collector? Sure. Skipping out on rent? Always. Working a con? Absolutely.

[ Laughs ] It was just the way to our next meal. I mean, most parents — they wake up in the morning and they go to work to put food on the table. Not anita. No, no. Not my mom. She would stay up all night plotting how she was going to sucker some poor, gullible guy out of his hard-earned cash.

Rey: Pschew. Sounds rough, pretty lonely for a child.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Yeah. I guess it was. But anita and I — we were a team. We didn’t have any other friends. We didn’t have any other family. It was just us. And she would remind me of that all the time, that we needed to stick together, you know, not let anybody else into our world.

[ Sighs ] All outsiders could not be trusted. “Do unto others before they do unto you.” That was her motto.

Rey: Wow. Talk about imposing a warped sense of the world on a young mind.

Chelsea: I guess I… it wasn’t till I was older that the reality of it all started to set in.

Billy: So, is that what’s keeping me up, the worry that i can’t break free of my past? Or maybe it’s the worry that I can’t break free of who i really am. Can that be who I used to be?

New vicks vapostick. Strong soothing vapors…

Billy: So, this is interesting. You’re both the analyst and the guy on the couch.

[ Chuckles ] So, what do you say, billy boy? No escaping this shrink, is there? There is no sugar-coating this. There is no turning a blind eye. There is no lying to yourself no matter how desperately you want to justify your mistakes, your missteps, your misgivings, your miscommunications.

[ Sighs ] There’s no running away from those. The night. What a trip, isn’t it? Your inner monologue just constantly reminding you of all the dumb things you did and said throughout the day and all the smart things you didn’t do or say. And then there are those big moments in your life… around and around in an unchangeable loop. But we hold on hope. What are we hoping for? What am I hoping for?

Chelsea: So, tell me — did you always want to be a cop?

Rey: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, honestly, I can’t ever remember wanting to be anything else. At an early age, I was always on the lookout for possible danger. Yeah, I had to be vigilant because I felt responsible for my mother and brother and sister. After my dad went missing, i became obsessed with what happened to him. Was he dead? Kidnapped?

Chelsea: Did you ever find out?

Rey: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Turns out he hadn’t gone missing at all. He was just off on one of his various affairs.

Chelsea: Ohh.

Rey: But I never forgot the rush I felt when I was solving the mystery, tracking down the clues. That feeling stuck with me. What about you? What set on your path?

Chelsea: Uh, I became a con artist in my own right because it’s all I knew. And I was good at it. I mean, how could I not be, right? I was trained by the best of them at a very young age. It was my way of life — until i got pregnant with johnny, actually. I knew I had to quit, even though I wasn’t going to raise him, I knew that I had to just be better in my life, be a good person. I know I’ve made some mistakes since then…

Rey: [ Laughs ]

Chelsea: …For reasons that I’m not proud of, but I — but I can honestly say that i have let that part of my life go. I had to, for my son’s sake. Connor — he needs me. This whole separation — it’s been so hard on him, and he’s still struggling.

Rey: Yeah. I saw that firsthand in the time we spent together. And I can also see that you’re not that person anymore. You’ve changed. Which is admirable because some people never do, no matter how hard they try.

Chelsea: Yeah, but what difference does it make? The new me — I mean, it doesn’t make anything better. I’m still lonely and alone.

Rey: Yeah, but you got your son. And the good thing about that is that you’re not gonna raise him the way that your mother raised you. That’s something to be proud of.

Abby: You were right. I feel so much better after that bath.

Chance: Well, good. It is nice to see you so relaxed. Girl, you smell delicious.

Abby: Oh, do I?

Chance: Mmm.

Abby: [ Laughs ]

Chance: Hey. Dominic, uh, woke up again, but I got him to sleep down here. And now, as you see, he is resting peacefully.

Abby: Oh, well, you are becoming quite the expert at comforting him.

Chance: I’m trying. Hey, now that you and dom are feeling better, I thought I’d go meet rey, help out with a stakeout. If that’s okay with you, of course.

Abby: What happened to postponing your return?

Chance: Well, you know, i called rey just to check in. He told me what was going on tonight. I’m not gonna lie. I’m pretty amped-up ’cause of what’s going on with the little guy, so I’m probably not gonna sleep much tonight anyways. Figured I’d join him. I’d probably get assigned this case if I went in today anyway, so… but if you don’t want me to go, I won’t go. I won’T.

Abby: No. It’s — it’s fine. I mean, you were saying that it would help you deal with your trauma to go back to work, so, um…go. Yeah. Yeah. You should go. But, um… hey, be careful, okay?

Chance: Yeah. I will. Promise me you won’t worry, okay?

Abby: [ Sighs ]

will continue. I’ve got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Billy: And, look, two or three years ago, you couldn’t stand to be in your own skin. So, that’s good. You’ve — you’ve changed your life around. Give yourself a pat on the back because this is a good place for you. You are in a really great place. And so much of that has to do with lily. You’re lucky to have her. So, if you’ve really been able to let go of all this baggage that you — you claim you have, what is it? What’s keeping you up at night? What is this restlessness, this unsettling feeling? Is there something deep down that is eating away at you? And if there is, what is it? How do you find it? Do you want to find it? Maybe that is the something that I need to process, reflect, and meditate on. But knowing you, you’re gonna want to find it, acknowledge it, and bury it in the back as quick as you can. Hi.

Lily: Hi. Sorry. I know I was intruding.

Billy: It’s okay. No. Sorry. Did I — did I wake you up?

Lily: No, no, no. And, look, don’t feel like you have to tell me what you’re doing if it’s private.

Billy: It’s not. It’s — it’s totally fine. I’m just having a little bit of fun, letting my subconscious run free, kind of like a successful therapy session, except I’m both the doctor and the patient.

Lily: Right. So I’m guessing what you said earlier about staying up to brainstorm was a cover story. Are you worried about why you’re not sleeping?

Billy: I think “worried” is too strong of a word. But, uh, I’m intrigued. I’m curious by it. I’m gonna let you hear something.

Lily: Oh, no, no, no. Don’t do that. That’s fine.

Billy: No, I think it’ll help you give a little bit of perspective.

Lily: No, but if it’s like a therapy session, it should stay private.

Billy: There’s no aspect of my life that I want private from you.

Chelsea: And I — I remember this one con we ran involved this real-estate heiress who was used to getting everything she wanted. And she had made up her mind that she needed to acquire this famed necklace. She felt like her jewelry collection just wouldn’t be complete without it. She was obsessed with getting her hands on this piece. And anita — she knew the type. She knew she was ripe for the picking, perfect mark for the perfect con.

Chance: I’m sorry. I don’t mean to interrupt. I couldn’t help but overhear some of that, and I actually know a little bit about your past from adam, believe it or not, and I find it pretty fascinating. I’d love to hear more, if you don’t mind.

Chelsea: Uh…okay, sure. But the statute of limitations have long passed, my friend.

Rey: [ Chuckles ]

Chance: Perfect. I won’t have to worry about listening to all the details then.

Chelsea: Okay. Um, so then anita comes up with a really clever plan. She forges some documents and gets a disguise for me to wear. She convinced this woman’s representatives that I was the princess that owned the necklace. So, we said that we needed a buyer but that it had to all remain confidential because i had some money trouble and we were trying to avoid any kind of embarrassment.

Chance: Wow.

Chelsea: Yeah.

Chance: Wow, wow, wow. You know, it’s pretty impressive, how far you and your mom were willing to take it, as far attention to detail goes, strategy, and all that. Pretty impressive that you were able to just walk away from that life, too.

Chelsea: Well, I was just telling rey I had to walk away from that life for my son. A lot of people — they still judge me for my past mistakes. Luckily, rey’s not one of those people. I mean, you’ve seen me at my worst. You know all about me. You know all the things, yet you choose to believe me when I tell you I’ve changed.

Rey: Well, it’s only because I’ve seen how hard you’ve worked to rebuild your life.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Oh. Time to get to work.

Chelsea: Ohh, I’ll let you go. Um, thank you for, uh, spending this time with me. I appreciate it. The tea and the conversation helped. I think I’ll be able to sleep now.

Rey: Well, I’m glad I could help.

Chelsea: Well, good luck at your stakeout.

Rey: Thank you. Alright. You sure you’re up for this?

Chance: Oh, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Are you kidding me? The baby and abby are asleep, and this is exactly what I need to be doing right now. Bring it.

Rey: Okay. Let’s do this then.

Why hide your skin

Billy: No matter how many times you go over it, you’re still stuck with the decisions you made, the ones you want to take back and the ones that you wish you made sooner, like stepping back from that soul-sucking battle with adam, all the rabbit holes you could have avoided going down, the times you gave in to reckless, self-destructive impulses that turned out to be very costly for not only yourself but for the ones around you and for the people that you love, as if going over all these events are going to somehow magically allow you to rewrite history or change the trajectory of your life. Moving forward, things aren’t automatically going to go right. You have to make those decisions, becoming the bigger man and letting go of this grudge with adam and moving on. Can you continue to be that man? I don’t know. Something still seems to be missing.

Lily: Wow. That’s really deep. It’s revealing to hear you talk about the darker parts of your history. But thank you for sharing that with me. Does it bother you to relive it all this way?

Billy: No. No. Maybe in the past, it would have, in a past relationship, but it doesn’t with you. I don’t know. I think I trust you and… it feels cathartic. To say it out loud kind of takes the edge off a little bit, and to be able to joke about it — you know, it’s kind of liberating a little bit.

Lily: Well, I am very impressed with how far you’ve come.

Billy: As far as I’ve come is directly linked you to. But what I’m most excited about is just how far we’re gonna go together.

Lily: I’m really proud of you.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Lily: You can come to bed when you’re ready, okay?

Billy: I’ll see you in a bit.

Lily: Okay.

Rey: Alright. So, there have been five break-ins in this neighborhood over the past two weeks. So far, they’ve all taken place at night while the victims slept. We think the perp’s a guy who knows how to disable security systems, slips in and out, and takes whatever he can get. So far, he hasn’t left us any clues or prints behind. But it’s like he’s taunting us now, daring us to catch him. I’m more than happy to oblige.

Chance: What makes you think he’s going to strike again tonight?

Rey: We did a chart comparing the timing of the break-ins to locations of the houses that were hit, and this distinct pattern emerged. And based on that, we think he’s gonna strike on this street next. But don’t get your hopes up yet. Might be a long night of waiting for nothing.

Chance: Come on, man. I know the drill. I’m down for whatever.

Rey: So, how’s your son doing?

Chance: Uh…well, his, uh, red blood cell count is low. So he’s got to get a bone marrow aspiration to see why.

Rey: Ohh. Sorry, man. That sounds serious.

Chance: Yeah. Yeah. I keep telling abby not to automatically go to the worst-case scenario, you know? Got to be patient and wait for these test results to come back.

Rey: Well, it must be tough.

Chance: [ Sighs ] It is. Yeah. I’m having a hard time listening to my own advice.

[ Sighs ] And there’s nothing worse than that worry you feel when your kid’s going through something, man. I don’t know. It’s real heavy.

Rey: I totally get it. I got a taste of that with faith when she got into that car accident. She had a kidney transplant. That was scary stuff. And also with connor. When I was spending a lot of time with him, he seemed so sad and confused about his parents’ split. I just — I wanted to reach out and help. I mean, I know it’s not the same when it’s your own kid.

Chance: No. Come on, man. She’s your step-daughter. I know how much you love her. It’s that impulse you get. You want to protect them, right?

Rey: That’s exactly how i feel.

Chance: You know what? I’m sure chelsea is so grateful that you’ve been there for connor like that.

Rey: Yeah. He’s a good kid. Oh. Alright. There we go — right over there, there’s our guy. You see him?

Chance: Yep.

Rey: He’s disabling the security system. Alright, so, I’m gonna circle around to the east side of the house. When I get there, you come at him from the other side, alright?

Chance: Yeah. Okay.

[ Smashing ]

Billy: Yeah, I apologize for missing our call this morning, but the dog ate my alarm clock, if you know what I mean. Right. Yeah. It happens to the best of us. Oh, they’re doing some work at the office, expanding them or doing whatever, so we’ve had to relocate and now we’re working from home for a little bit. [ Sighs ]

Devon: Yo!

Lily: Good morning.

Devon: Good morning. Look at you and this outfit you got on.

Lily: Thank you.

Devon: You must have an important meeting today.

Lily: It’s the very latest in upper management chic. It’s favored by ceos across the globe.

Devon: Well, you haven’t lost your touch.

Lily: [ Laughs ] Thank you. If you’re wondering why i stopped by, I’m hoping that my very important meeting is with you.

Devon: Wait. What?

Lily: Do you have time to talk, ceo to ceo?

Jack: Hey there. I didn’t see you come in.

Amanda: Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were in the middle of something.

Jack: Nah. Reading the paper. Please join me.

Amanda: I’d love to.

Jack: So, how’s the new law practice?

Amanda: Oh, it’s going well. Imani and I are building a new client roster, so it takes time.

Jack: It’ll happen.

Amanda: I’m sure that it will. My sister — she has a long list of political contacts, and I’m tenacious.

Jack: That’s a good thing to be.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Speaking of tenacious, have you spoken with phyllis?

Jack: Not yet. Milan is one of those cities that grabs hold of you and never lets you go. I’m sure summer’s keeping her very busy. Last time I was there, it was nonstop.

Amanda: I have to say, you have quite the poker face.

Jack: I’ve negotiated my share of contracts.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Pleading the fifth, I see.

Jack: Why do I feel like I’m on the witness stand?

Amanda: I just really believe that you and phyllis deserve happiness, and I thought it would be together.

Jack: So did I, for a time. But you know what? Life is unpredictable.

Amanda: Yeah.

Jack: And so is phyllis.

Rey: So, what do you got going on today?

Sharon: The usual. I’m keeping an eye on this place. I have a few new patients. But you have a big day. Chance is coming back to work.

Rey: At long last.

Sharon: How do you feel about it?

Rey: Well, I was happy to see abby and him looking so relaxed at the engagement party. Maybe I was wrong to be too concerned about him jumping in back too soon.

Sharon: Yeah, it was really nice seeing them out together as a couple.

Rey: Oh, would you look at that? It’s already time to go. How the hell did that happen?

Sharon: Because we enjoy each other’s company. You know, it’s a little thing called physics and chemistry.

Rey: Well, I better get a move on so I can get back to the station and welcome my partner back to the force.

Sharon: Bagel or muffin?

Rey: Mm, surprise me.

Sharon: Okay, and I will get you your favorite latte to go. I’m on it.

Rey: Well, babe, hold off. It’s, uh — it’s from chance.

Abby: [ Sighs ] All he does is sleep, and he looks so pale.

Chance: He was awake at the doctor’s office, right? Just fell asleep on the car ride home. That’s pretty normal.

Abby: Yeah. I’m sure you’re right. I’m just — I’m trying not to lose it.

Chance: Hey. Listen to me. We got him to the doctor as soon as we realized something was off, right? Now, he doesn’t have a rash, doesn’t have a fever. He’s not having trouble breathing. It’s nothing scary like that. So let’s just wait for these lab results, which I am sure will tell us that our baby boy is just fine. Okay? What do you think healthier looks like?

Jack: Late night?

Billy: Uh, just having a little bit of trouble sleeping.

Amanda: Mnh, insomnia’s the worst.

Billy: Yeah. I’m not loving it.

Jack: Look, I’m just saying that you went from running a company with your girlfriend to being her second in command, and that’s bound to bring up an issue or two.

Billy: No, actually, none whatsoever. Lily and I are great. We are very happy both at home and at chancellor. And everything that happened at chanccomm is in the rearview mirror, including victor and his minions.

Jack: Well, that’s putting a positive spin on things.

Billy: Jack, don’t go looking for things that aren’t there, okay?

Amanda: I would just say that your brother has always been lily’s biggest cheerleader, so i I know that he loves seeing her come into her own like this.

Billy: That is very true. And thank you for the vote of confidence.

Jack: It still doesn’t explain why you look so tired.

Billy: [ Scoffs ] Look, maybe my brain’s a little revved up, but it doesn’t mean that it’s anything nefarious. You ever think about that?

Chance: Here you go. This should warm you up.

Abby: Thank you.

Chance: Yeah.

Abby: I’m just so grateful that you’re here with us.

Chance: Well, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

Abby: Oh, my god. Wait. There is somewhere where you’re supposed to be — I mean at the precinct with rey. Today is your first day back on the force, and you’re late.

Chance: Abby…

Abby: No, look, seriously, go. I’ll call you with an update as soon as I hear from the doctor, and then I’ll call devon, too.

Chance: Won’t be necessary.

Abby: What do you mean?

Chance: I already told them I’m not coming. It’s all good.

Abby: [ Sighs ] What terrible timing. First you’re going back and forth about returning, and now this. Are you gonna be in trouble?

Chance: No, no, no, no. Trust me — they, uh — they’ll understand.

Abby: Okay.

Chance: This much more important.

Abby: [ Sighs ] If you say so.

Chance: YeaH. This is the first time this little guy’s been sick since I’ve been home.

Abby: You know, uh, shortly after he was born, he got the sniffles. You should have seen devon and mariah and me. We were totally panicked. His fever spiked so quickly.

Chance: What’d you do?

Abby: Well, we called the pediatrician, and she assured us that it was just a cold and that babies pick up bugs like that all the time, it’s how they build their immune system, and that a fever in an infant isn’t as dangerous as it for an adult.

Chance: I didn’t know that.

Abby: I did, or least I — I should have. I mean, I — I read every single baby book that I could get my hands on. But then when there was a crisis, all that information — it just went right out of my head. It’s crazy how a situation like this can just shake you to your core. You know, I almost wish that he did have a fever because I would know exactly what to do because we’ve been through it before together and we both survived.

Chance: You know, I’m really thankful that you had mariah and devon to lean on during all that.

Abby: Yeah.

Chance: I just wish I would have been here, too.

Abby: You know what? Um, maybe we shouldn’t wait. Maybe we should go ahead and alert devon.

Lily: So, I’ve been making my way through the open proposals at chancellor.

Devon: Mm-hmm. But your head is spinning.

Lily: Oh, yeah, it has been a lot. But it’s also been kind of exciting, digging into these new fields.

Devon: I can imagine.

Lily: Yeah, but I got to our entertainment division, and i saw some projects that are in the planning phase still that reminded me of things that you and dad wanted to do at hamilton-winters.

Devon: Oh, really?

Lily: Yeah. Um, actually, it kind of got me thinking about dad and… I don’t know. I was just thinking… he would be proud of us, right?

Devon: Yeah. Yeah. Of course he’d be proud of us. Absolutely. Especially you. Look at everything you’ve accomplished since you got out of prison.

Lily: Yeah. Well, I mean, that’s part of what motivates me, you know, is that dad passed away shortly after I got released, so he never really got to see me rebuild my life and succeed.

Devon: Yeah, I know. It’s true.

Lily: ‘Cause, you know, i mean, I’ve always felt partly responsible that dad passed away so young.

Devon: I don’t know why you feel that way. Please don’T. You don’t — you’re not to blame at all for what happened to him. Nobody is. You’ve done nothing but emulate the kind of person he was, and you rose to become the head of a major corporation. He’d be beyond proud of you.

Lily: Well, thank you for saying that.

Devon: It’s the truth.

Lily: Um, anyway, I was looking at these projects, and i was thinking…

Devon: Hmm?

Lily: Well, I had a very crazy thought, something that i can’t really get out of my head.

Devon: A crazy thought? How crazy are we talking?

Lily: What if our two companies joined forces?

Devon: Like a joint venture?

Lily: Yes. Chancellor industries and hamilton-winters coming together to honor katherine and dad. I mean, if we combine our resources, we could do something incredible, something memorable.

Devon: Yeah. That’s — I mean, sounds incredible. What exactly do you have in mind?

Lily: Well, I was thinking maybe —

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Devon: Hang on one second. Hold that thought. Hang on. It’s chance. I should take this, if you don’t mind.

Lily: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No. Take it. Take it. It’s fine.

Devon: Hey, chance. How you doing?

Chance: Hey, devon. Um, look, we don’t want to alarm you, but we thought we should keep you up to speed. We had to take dominic to the pediatrician this morning.

Devon: Why’d you do that? Is he sick?

Chance: Well, he’s, uh — he’s feeling real lethargic. You know, he’s sleeping far too much. He missed a feeding, which isn’t really like him.

Devon: Okay. Where you guys at now?

Chance: We’re home now. We just wanted to keep you updated.

Devon: I appreciate that very much. Do you mind if I come and check on him?

Chance: Yeah, of course. When?

Devon: I can come right now if that’s okay.

Chance: Um… yeah, sure thing.

Devon: Okay. Perfect. I’ll, uh — I’ll be there shortly.

Chance: Okay.

Devon: They had to take dominic to the doctor, and i want to, uh, go check on him, make sure he’s alright. Can we finish this another time?

Lily: Yeah, of course. Is he okay?

Devon: I hope so. Most of your immune system lives right in your gut.

Billy: How dare I impugn your character by showing a little brotherly concern?

Billy: Obviously you think that I’m being defensive. Okay. Maybe I’m just used to being a target. Maybe that is my natural response these days. Or maybe the lack of sleep has me a little bit wired. Either way, I’m sorry. I apologize for being…testy.

Jack: Well, apology accepted. I am still concerned about this insomnia. I have battled with it myself from time to time.

Billy: Mm.

Jack: Maybe I can help. Is it bad dreams? Is it falling asleep? Is it staying asleep?

Billy: That one. The latter. Waking up at 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, staring at the ceiling. My body needs the rest, but my mind will not let it. And don’t even talk about quitting caffeine because I’m far too young for that.

Jack: Maybe your subconscious is having a hard time with everything that you’ve been put through. I mean even if during the day things seem stable and steady on and on track.

Billy: Okay. I saw that there. What, are you a therapist now, too?

Amanda: Hardly. I don’t know you as well as your brother jack, but you have been through a lot these past few months, with adam and ashland and victor, and that kind of stress — it can stay with you. And it will mess you up if you let it.

Billy: So, what are you suggesting? I climb to the rooftops and scream at the top of my lungs again?

Amanda: Well, I don’t think that your tenants would appreciate that.

Billy: No, I don’t need them complaining to the landlord.

Amanda: No.

Billy: No.

Jack: Okay, there’s obviously something here I’m not getting.

Billy: Well, way back when amanda and I were getting to know each other, my favorite release was climbing to the rooftop of the grand phoenix and shouting, screaming at the top of my lungs. I even convinced her to try it one time.

Amanda: Yes, yes, he did. And I have to say, it was pretty satisfying.

Billy: Mm-hmm.

Amanda: Yes, but we have both grown and moved on from that phase in our lives.

Billy: We have. And we are happy and healthy and functional, healed.

Jack: Some wounds heal. Others appear to and then they open up later, when we least expect them to. At least, that’s been my experience. Look, I’m just saying, maybe there are some issues that you’re not letting yourself look at that you still need to confront.

Rey: Looks like chance won’t be starting today after all.

Sharon: That’s a relief.

Rey: Really? Why?

Sharon: Well, I didn’t want to say anything earlier, but, um, I’m a little worried about him, too. You know, I’m wondering if he’s ready to do police work, get out there and be the solid, stable partner you need on the job. I know abby would like him to stay home longer. So, if they’ve decided to spend more time together as a family, I think that’s a positive.

Rey: Sharon, hold on. It’s not that. It’s, uh — I wish it were, but it’s actually about dom.

Sharon: Oh. What about him?

Rey: They had to take him to the doctor today.

Sharon: Oh, no.

Rey: Yeah.

Sharon: Well, I hope it’s nothing serious.

Rey: Well, he wouldn’t say, but he feels like he has to be there for abby and their son while they get it sorted out.

Sharon: Of course, of course. Um, do you think I should check in with her or let mariah know?

Rey: You know, I think for now we should let those two handle it.

Devon: Hey. What’s going on with him? When’d you guys first notice that someone was wrong?

Abby: Well, he’s been sleeping a lot more than usual. He looks pale. And we noticed that he was really tired before we went to mariah and tessa’s engagement party, and we thought maybe he was going through a growth spurt or maybe he just had a long day. But then he slept through the night and he woke up and he was still lethargic, so I called the pediatrician, and she told us to bring him right in.

Chance: Just as a precaution.

Devon: And what’d the doctor say?

Chance: Uh, well, his physical test came back pretty normal, but she wanted to take some blood tests just to be sure.

Devon: She wanted to take blood tests for what?

Abby: You know doctors. They don’t want to jump to any conclusions.

Chance: She didn’t seem overly concerned, if you ask me.

Devon: Did she give any indication at all as to what’s going on with him?

Chance: No, not really. You know doctors, man. They don’t like to speculate.

Abby: Whereas I — I can’t stop speculating. I’ve been combing the internet looking for any clues.

Devon: And what have you found?

Abby: I’ve been searching the baby’s symptoms online, and it seems like there might be a chance that he’s anemic.

Devon: It might be anemia?

Abby: I don’t know. I’m not a doctor.

Devon: That’s treatable, though, right?

Wait, oh, yes

Lily: Wait. I’m sorry. For how long? Uh, okay. Well, yeah. I mean, I guess it is what it is, so — okay, well, let me just, um, chat with billy, and I’ll get back to you. Thank you.

[ Keys clatter ]

Billy: What’s the problem?

Lily: Um, that was the head of facilities. The contractors told him that the construction’s gonna take a while.

Billy: Oh, no.

Lily: So either we work there and we just deal with the drilling and the hammering…

Billy: No, that would be a negative.

Lily: …Or we work here for the meantime.

Billy: Is there really no space in that building for us to work out of?

Lily: No, there’s not.

Billy: What about somewhere nearby?

Lily: I don’t have time to look, and neither do you.

Billy: Isn’t that what the facility manager is supposed to do?

Lily: Well, I mean, I’ll look into it. But, anyway, in the meantime, I have very important news.

Billy: Oh, yeah? Hit me.

Lily: I chatted with devon about us possibly doing a joint venture. We didn’t really get into it because he got called away. He had to deal with dom. Dom, I guess, had to go to the doctor.

Billy: Oh, no. Is the baby okay?

Lily: I mean, I hope so. I told devon to let me know if there’s any news. But, honestly, I think it’s just new-parent jitters.

Billy: I remember those well.

Lily: Oh, yeah. I do, too.

Billy: So, tell me about this meeting that you had — or, at least, as much as you got through.

Lily: Well, I think I was able to pique devon’s interest at the prospect of chancellor and hamilton-winters doing a joint venture together. I mean, this could be really, really groundbreaking.

Billy: You’ve got that sparkle in your eye that I love to see.

Lily: Well, I mean, you know, I like making my work personal. It makes it more exciting for me. Oh, I’m sorry. Am I — am I boring you?

Billy: No. No, of course not. I guess I just didn’t have enough coffee — because you drained it.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Maybe we could get the facilities manager to order us some more.

Lily: Oh, ha ha.

Billy: In fact, I was just at crimson lights and I should have grabbed a bag or two, but it, uh, slipped my mind.

Lily: Because of how tired you were? I mean, I actually heard you get up the last few nights in the middle of the night.

Billy: Yeah. Sorry. I was trying to be quiet. Tried not to disturb you, but, uh, just been feeling a little restless.

Lily: Yeah, but three nights in a row? I mean, clearly something is going on. So…what’s up?

Jack: So, what is michael up to now that he’s stepped away as D.A.? Working on his squash game?

Lauren: [ Laughs ] I only wish. His retirement lasted a whole of, uh, half a day once victor found out about it.

Jack: Oh, don’t tell me.

Lauren: Yes, he is working for him again.

Billy: An offer he couldn’t refuse.

Lauren: How on earth did you guess?

Jack: I know victor. When he wants something, the man does not give up.

Lauren: Yeah, and of course michael said, “oh, no, there’ll be reasonable hours. There’ll be boundaries. I’m not gonna let this job take over my life.” And what happens? The minute victor could, he sends him to south america on a secret mission.

Jack: Classic mustache.

Lauren: [ Sighs ] Isn’t it?

Jack: You have my sympathies.

Lauren: You know, I’m starting to think that this was not a good idea for michael to take this job.

Jack: You know, frankly, I’m surprised he accepted it. Didn’t he like being D.A.?

Lauren: You know, he was getting antsy. He thought that he wanted to go out on top. And now, with victor [Scoffs] Anything can happen.

Abby: I mean, I’m not really good with all this medical-ese stuff, but, I mean, it seems like if it is anemia, that could be treated with iron drops.

Devon: You think maybe it’s his diet? ‘Cause there could be other deficiencies. I know when I don’t get vitamin c —

Chance: I don’t think we ought to be second-guessing the doctors here. I mean, do y’all? We’re not trained in any of this.

Abby: And plus, babies’ little systems are so different from ours.

Devon: I’m sure. Do you want me to give nate a call, though, and see what he has to say?

Chance: I mean, you can, but I’m telling you, man, dr. Bradley, she’s — she’s world-class.

Abby: She really is.

Chance: Didn’t she tell me she’s a friend of nate’s?

Abby: Yeah, he recommended her to us.

Chance: Yeah.

Devon: I wasn’t aware of that.

Chance: Look, I just think, in any case, we’re in good hands here.

Devon: Yeah. No, I trust your judgment.

Abby: Well, what if it’s my fault? I mean, what if I took him off breast milk too soon? What if he’s not eating the right foods? And what if he has bad circulation? I try to play with him all the time and we do tummy time, but maybe I need to be more active with him?

Chance: Hey, no, stop. Do not start blaming yourself. Okay? You are an excellent mother. And, look, if that’s the case, those are things that we can adjust if the doctor tells us to.

Devon: Yeah, he’s right, abby. What’s going on with dominic has nothing to do with you or anything you’ve done, okay?

Abby: I’m sorry. Are you accusing me of over-reacting, devon? Because that really isn’t helpful.

Devon: I’m not.

Abby: I mean, I am his mother. I am supposed to protect him. That is my job. What if it’s not anemia? What if it’s something else? And my mind can’t stop going to the worst possible thing. I’m sorry. I — I can’t help it. That’s just who I am. So, you telling me to calm down — it’s just making me more anxious.

Chance: Hey.

Chance: Hey. No one is telling you to calm down or accusing you of over-reacting, okay? This whole thing has just got everybody stressed. Everybody’s on edge. All we need to do is take this thing step by step together. You and me, right? Lean on each other.

Abby: I want to. I just — I — I can’t keep my worries in check. I’m not built that way.

Chance: Look, facts are different than feelings. So let’s focus on what we know. Abby, I’m telling you, if dr. Bradley was that concerned, she would have admitted him for observation right then and there. But she didn’T. She told us to go home. She told us to let him rest. And that’s what we’re gonna do, okay? So let’s get these test results, and then we’ll go from there.

Abby: Everything you’re saying makes perfect sense, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

Devon: How you doing, little man? I usually get called over to help quiet you down when you’re being fussy. This is a change of pace, huh? That’s okay. It’s okay ’cause babies change their routines all the time as they’re growing. I learned that.

Adam: What brings you back here at this hour?

Sally: Remember how we were gonna discuss the details of the job you offered me at newman media?

Adam: Yeah. Um…sorry that our conversation got derailed earlier.

Sally: It’s okay. You had calls to take, people to meet. But I was hoping maybe we could talk now, because I don’t think I’m gonna be able to sleep until we do.

Adam: You sound worried.

Sally: Just more curious of the specifics of the job, like what exactly I’m gonna be doing on a day-to-day in a professional capacity and how that’s going to play out in reality.

Adam: You were so excited for us to continue to work together. You, uh, having second thoughts now?

Tessa: Mariah, can I take this off yet?

Sharon: Oh, I’m just so thrilled that we were all able to create a magical evening for them. I have to admit, I was a little nervous about some of the potential dynamics in play at first. I was worried about how mariah might react seeing abby and devon now that they’re sharing custody of dominic.

Rey: She seemed okay to me.

Sharon: Yeah, she’s really come a long way. And there was a time when she would’ve been desperate to share custody of dominic, but I think she’s gotten past all of her angst surrounding him.

Rey: Yeah, she seems to be in a good place now. When you said you were concerned, I thought you were talking about noah and his lingering feelings for tessa.

Sharon: That was on my mind as well. You know, I truly believe that noah wishes all the best for mariah and tessa, but despite his best efforts to be their biggest cheerleader, I know that tonight was really hard for him, so I’m glad that he went home with nick because I think my son could use a little extra support right now.

Rey: All I’m thinking is what a wonderful mother you are.

Sally: I was ecstatic when you said you wanted to keep working with me, and I am very flattered.

Adam: But the thrill is gone? ‘Sally: No, the thrill is definitely still there. But…you offered me a job spontaneously to help me save face in front of chloe and chelsea. And of course, I am very grateful and of course, i accepted in the moment. And I can’t thank you enough for finding me a place at newman media now that the fashion platform has been shuttered. But you haven’t been able to tell me exactly what that place is, except for maybe covering fashion news.

Adam: So is this you letting me off the hook? Or are you trying to tell me that you’re looking for something better or more enticing?

Sally: Maybe both. Maybe neither. I don’t know. It depends on where your head is at. You’re the boss. What? Well, I’m glad you find me so amusing.

Adam: I do endlessly, but in a good way. And you’re very smart to raise these questions because you should never commit to something until you know precisely what you are committing to.

Sally: Mm-hmm.

Adam: I’ve actually been thinking a lot about you since we parted ways.

Sally: Really?

Adam: I know that fashion is your first love, but I think that you could channel that energy in a new direction.

Nick: I think we should order another batch of empanadas, and don’t tell me you’re not hungry. I mean, you wolfed down this whole first order. I barely got one.

Noah: Yeah, yeah, I can go for more. I think I can pass on whatever else you’re about to serve up.

Nick: Alright, what’s that?

Noah: I can’t help but notice that since we’ve gotten here, you have gone out of your way to keep the conversation on nothing but sports and movies. Nothing about the party we were just at, yet you’re watching my every move, trying to figure out what’s going on in my head. So I’m assuming the second course is coming with a big side of questions.

Nick: Look, it’s not an interrogation. Alright? I’m just trying to get you to talk. I know you’re doing your damndest to deal with these feelings you have for tessa, but I know you. I saw you put on that big, old smile and make that beautiful toast to mariah and tessa.

Noah: I meant every word.

Nick: I’m sure. But I know this is a lot harder for you than you’re letting on.

Noah: Look, dad, I know you and mom are worried, but I’m gonna tell you the same thing that I told her. I’m gonna be fine, okay? Seriously, can we please, please just get back to eating our empanadas?

Nick: So just back off, then?

Mariah: Would you like a chocolate martini?

Tessa: [ Gasps ] Yes, that sounds so decadent and delicious.

Mariah: Well, that is the right answer because it’s the only fancy drink that I remember how to make from my bartending days.

Tessa: [ Laughs ] When did you have time to do all of this? You were only gone for a few minutes.

Mariah: Well, I had a little bit of help.

Tessa: Oh, faith.

Mariah: Yep.

Tessa: That’s what you two were whispering about.

Mariah: It was our super-secret mission.

Tessa: I mean, after the party we just had, I did not expect this. I mean, this is just above and beyond.

Mariah: Well, if you can’t go above and beyond when you’re newly engaged, then when can you? I wanted to keep celebrating us. The first part of the night was for our friends and our family, but the rest of the night — the rest of the night is for us. So…here is to you and me.

Tessa: To us.

Mariah: Mmm.

Rey: I know that your family is my family. I didn’t mean to imply that they aren’T.

Sharon: Well, I can’t help wondering if there might be something more to what you said. Did one of the kids say something to make you feel like an outsider?

Rey: No, no, not at all.

Sharon: Did I say something or nick?

Rey: No, it’s nothing like that, I swear. Everyone was great. Like always.

Sharon: Well, that’s a relief. But I still wonder where that comment came from, because i know it came from somewhere. You know, whatever you’re feeling, you can talk to me.

Rey: You remember that conversation we had not that long ago about the connection that you and nick have with your children, the way that you can read mariah and noah and faith in a way that I can’t?

Sharon: Yeah, well, that’s just, you know, part of being a parent and having a lot of years under your belt.

Rey: I know, I know. I get that I arrived a little later on the scene. It’s just that when I see you and nick with your children, i become extra aware that I missed out on the whole parenting thing. It’s not that I’m looking to have children now. It’s just that, once in a while, I have these “what if” moments, right? And then, of course, they go away. They’re just these fleeting moments of a life that might have been. Do you know what I mean?

Sharon: Yeah, I completely understand.

Rey: Good, because I love the life that we share more than anything.

Chelsea: Hey, there. I hope I’m not interrupting.

Chelsea: What did I walk in on? Were you closed for a private function tonight? I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize. The patio door was unlocked.

Sharon: No, that’s okay. Yes, we were having a little party earlier. We were celebrating mariah and tessa’s engagement.

Chelsea: Oh! That’s wonderful news. Congratulations.

Chelsea: Okay, so you definitely are closed. Again, my apologies. I will see myself out.

Sharon: You know, you don’t have to go. I don’t mind getting you something to drink. What would you like?

Chelsea: Oh, thank you. Well, since it’s late, maybe something not caffeinated.

Sharon: Mm, would you like warm cider?

Chelsea: Perfect.

Rey: So, sharon and I heard from nick that newman media was sold to newman/locke.

Chelsea: It’s true.

Rey: Mm. How’s that gonna affect your business with sally and chloe?

Chelsea: Chloe and I will no longer be associated with any newman entity, but the good news is we are already close to securing our backing for our newest endeavor.

Rey: Oh, wow. That’s great news.

Sharon: Yeah, that is good news. And will sally continue to work with you?

Chelsea: No, unfortunately, ms. Spectra won’t be able to join us. I never felt like she really fit our vision anyway. She’s still working alongside adam, which is odd, considering victoria insisted she didn’t want any kind of fashion platform, but…

Sharon: So what will she be doing?

Chelsea: No idea. But adam clearly has some purpose for her in mind.

Sally: Coo?! Are you serious?

Adam: I would not joke about something this serious.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] I…I don’t know what to say.

Adam: Uh, well, I guess I’m asking you the same question that you asked me — how serious are you?

Sally: Well, I appreciate the massive vote of confidence, but…I mean, let’s be honest. I’m not the most obvious person for the job.

Adam: It is outside-the-box thinking, okay? But let me tell you how I came to this decision. You are artistic. You’re creative. But you also have a head for business. I mean, in your time here, you’ve shown yourself to be very smart, driven, and especially savvy when it comes to media, especially social media. You have a fire inside that i respect and, quite frankly, i admire.

Sally: Well, thank you for that. Back at you. I mean, I think that that’s something that we have in common, this deep-seated need to succeed and prove ourselves. I mean, not that I’ve come even close to what you’ve achieved, but I just mean —

Adam: No, no, I know what you mean. My father is always testing me and making me prove that i deserve my seat at the table. Okay? But now I’m gonna prove to him and victoria and ashland that nobody is better to helm newman media than I am. And I could really use someone by my side that I can rely on.

Sally: I’m just triple-checking — you mean me.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Yes. I want to name a coo before my sister can start suggesting people because any one of her candidates are gonna be a spy and they’re gonna be all too happy to report back on my every move.

Sally: So you want me to be your spy.

Adam: No. No, I want you to be my partner. I trust you, and I value your loyalty as much as your talent. So what do you say? Are you interested?

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Yeah, of course I’m interested. I would be a fool not to be, but I…

[ Sighs ] I just can’t help but wonder how victor and victoria are gonna react. I mean, yes, victoria has been perfectly pleasant towards me because she loved the wedding dress, but that does not mean she’s gonna love me being newman media’s coo. I mean, she could push back hard.

Adam: Okay. Let her.

Sally: And victor may not be a huge fan of the idea either. Won’t you have to get their approval?

Adam: Listen, don’t worry about them. I can handle my sister and my father.

Sally: Oh, my god, this is incredible. Thank you.

Adam: You’re welcome. There is a big, bright future ahead for us. What about a celebratory drink?

Sally: I would say yes, but before we celebrate or move forward with…any of this… I think we better discuss our personal relationship.

Mariah: This has got to be one of the best nights of my life.

Tessa: Maybe the best night. I mean, so far.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Years from now, I am gonna remember this exact moment — sitting here with you, so excited to be marrying you, and wondering how I got so lucky.

Tessa: I’m the lucky one.

Mariah: Oh, do you — do you want another drink?

Tessa: No.

Mariah: Okay, do you want to watch a movie?

Tessa: No.

Mariah: Well, what do you want to do then? Okay, yeah, I think I — I think I know what you’ve got in mind. Depression can make you feel like…just…noooo.

Rey: Don’t waste a drop of your energy wondering about adam’s relationship with sally. It’s a good thing that you don’t have to report to him anymore. The fact that you’re moving on with your life is something you should be elated about.

Chelsea: I am, for sure.

Rey: Putting this last chapter behind you is the best thing you can do, and it looks like you’re already doing that, right? I mean, it’s why you decided to sell the penthouse, right?

Chelsea: I had to distance myself from all the memories. I packed my things up today, actually, and I temporarily moved into the grand phoenix until I can find a new home.

Rey: Good. See? It sounds like you’re already on your way to a fresh start.

Chelsea: Yeah, there have been some hard days since I came back to town, but I’m gonna put all that behind me. It’s gonna be all sunshine from here on out. Maybe not all sunshine, but you know what I mean.

Sharon: Yeah, positive attitude, that’s half the battle, right?

Rey: Yeah, and the other half is putting one foot in front of the other. And we’re all rooting for you.

Tessa: Hi. Oh, I was just getting some water. You didn’t have to get out of bed.

Mariah: Oh, I wasn’t sleeping. I was just closing my eyes. You know, I wasn’t really tired before, and then you kind of just woke me up, so… thank you. Oh, I just don’t want this night to end. I just have this warm, fuzzy, and dreamy feeling, like, all over. Do you think we could just spend forever this time, this place?

Tessa: Works for me.

Mariah: You know, I really love your studio apartment, because that was our first home. But I have to say, I am really, really glad that we moved here. It’s so nice to have so much space.

Tessa: Yeah, I mean, we have an actual bedroom and another one for a little boy or little girl.

Mariah: Wow. This place is filled with so much possibility. Oh, did you see our poster and what everybody wrote to us?

Tessa: Oh, no, I was too busy talking to everyone and gazing at my beautiful fiancéE.

Mariah: Aww.

Tessa: Oh, could faith’s note be any sweeter?

Mariah: And I love what moses said about you getting a grammy, because I second that prediction, okay? Abby and chance’s message — just really, really sweet. And she even signed for bowie.

Tessa: It was really nice to see you, abby, and devon talking earlier.

Mariah: Yeah, I’m — I’m really glad that I’m at peace with them and that the whole dominic situation is sorted out, because I have everything I need right here. Who drew the heart? Because it’s not signed.

Tessa: Oh, that’s from noah.

Noah: Thank you for dinner and for not, you know, pushing the whole tessa thing.

Nick: Well, I do listen sometimes.

Noah: [ Scoffs ] I didn’t mean to completely shut you down like that. I understand why you’d be concerned. It’s just that I don’t want you guys to think that I’m falling apart or I’m some kind of hopeless romantic. I’m going through some turmoil right now, but it’ll pass. What matters to me most is that I’m here with my family and i have a purpose. And for a while, I thought that purpose was art, but…I don’t know, maybe I was wrong. Maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for here working with you.

Nick: And it goes without saying, noah, your mother and i are beyond thrilled that you’re home. We just want to find your center, you know, whatever that is or however that happens.

Noah: Then we all want the same thing.

Nick: Just know, you need anything, I don’t care what it is, your mom and I are always here for you.

Noah: I know. I couldn’t ask for anything more. Thanks, dad. (Cyclist) why is ice t in a speed walking crew?

Sally: So when we came back to the office earlier, I was very moved by you asking me to stay on, and you may have noticed that I hugged you.

Adam: I-I noticed.

Sally: No, I mean, like, i really hugged you, like, not in a coworker kind of way.

Adam: Oh, you haven’t met joe from accounting.

Sally: I’m serious. And when we were in said hug, i could literally feel the temperature rise between us, and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] I, uh — I may have needed a moment to cool off after you left.

Sally: Yeah, we almost… or could’ve…gone there. I think that we need to stop dancing around the obvious and address what’s going on between us head-on. Because the truth is, whether we are standing close to each other or across the room, there is a chemistry between us. I can literally feel the fireworks in the making, and a lot of times, it takes every ounce of self-discipline in me not to act on those fireworks. And I’m pretty sure that we’ve both been trying to avoid our feelings, and I don’t want to do that anymore, because something is happening between us, even if we pretend it’s not.

Adam: Well, I mean, that’s not gonna be a problem, as long as we’re working together.

Sally: I don’t know what that means. Are you still trying to convince yourself that we’re just friends and colleagues or are you finally saying that you want what I want, but it’s not gonna get in the way of what we’re trying to accomplish professionally?

Adam: [ Sighs ] The second part. Everything that you just described. I feel the same way.

Chelsea: Well, thanks for the drink and conversation. I’m glad I stopped by. And I’m glad you forgot to lock the patio door.

Rey: [ Chuckles ]

Sharon: You’re welcome.

[ Knock on door ] Oh. Who knew I was this popular after hours?

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Sharon: Oh. Hey, what are you doing back here?

Nick: Oh, I thought you and rey might use some help cleaning up.

Sharon: And?

Nick: And I wanted to fill you in about something. Hey, chelsea.

Chelsea: Hi, nick.

Nick: What’s — what’s up?

Chelsea: Oh, you know, we’re just hanging out.

Sharon: Um, I could actually use some help cleaning the patio.

Nick: Yeah, sure. It’s good to see you.

Chelsea: You too.

Chelsea: Well, um, thank you for the chat. I really appreciate your support and advice. Never in a million years did i think we’d become friends, but correct me if I’m wrong, I think that’s happened.

Rey: Well, if you think I’m going to disagree with you, I’m sorry, I’m gonna have to disappoint you.

Chelsea: So many people in this town haven’t been sincere about giving me a second chance, but you’re the real deal. You’re genuine, kind. You’ve been able to look past the things I’ve done, and you’ve been able to see me for who i really am. It means a lot.

Sharon: Chelsea just happened to drop by. She didn’t even know about the engagement party, but seems like she needed some company. I think she’s dealing with a lot with adam and the whole newman media drama.

Nick: There’s always collateral damage when it comes to my family. Then, when you throw in the business, things always tend to get worse, which is why I keep my nose out of it.

Sharon: So I hope what you came by to talk to me about is noah.

Nick: Yes, when we left here, we didn’t go straight home. We ended up at society. We grabbed some food. I forced him to have a father-son talk with me.

Sharon: Oh, good, because i knew this party was gonna be hard on him. But let me guess, he said that everything’s totally fine and there’s nothing to worry about.

Nick: Pretty much. He basically told me to back off.

Sharon: [ Sighs ] Noah’s always had such a big heart, and he’s always wore it on his sleeve. Seems like now he’s shutting down. And if he doesn’t feel comfortable talking to you or talking to me about what he’s going through, nick, that’s not good.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Tessa: Just in case, if you had any doubt, I think that represents his love for us, and not, you know, me.

Mariah: Yeah, I know that’s how he meant it. I actually asked noah to draw something because I thought it’d be worth something one day.

Tessa: Ah.

Mariah: And I guess this is his way of granting my request.

Tessa: [ Laughs ] So you guys talked?

Mariah: We did. We got all the weirdness out, you know, brother, sister straight talk, and now we are good. I still feel bad for him, though, because I get it. It sucks having feelings for someone you shouldn’t and you can’t have, but I know he’s — he’s really working hard to make sure that we’re okay and you’re okay and he’s okay.

[ Chuckles ]

Tessa: I mean, yeah, I — i think the most important thing that we can do is show him that everything’s normal and nothing’s changed between the three of us, because I know that’s what he wanted when we talked.

Mariah: Well, that sounds like a plan to me. So, now, onto us.

Tessa: Okay.

Mariah: Are you feeling sleepy?

Tessa: No.

Mariah: Mm. I like the sound of that.

Nick: So I don’t think there’s any cause for alarm where noah is concerned. He has made it very clear to me he’s not gonna get in the way of what mariah and tessa have. He seems very glad that they have found the happiness that they both deserve.

Sharon: Sure, and I’m sure that noah wants to get over tessa, but, you know, that’s easier said than done.

Nick: It’s just gonna take time, and it makes sense that this is something that he doesn’t want to talk about, because that would mean he’s dredging up this very painful thing he’s trying to get over. He just has to learn to cope with it. You know, he wants to focus on his work and all the things he needs to do for himself.

Sharon: Well, I guess there’s nothing we can do to help noah right now. He just has to work his way through this.

Nick: Exactly.

Sharon: Wait, is this your way of suggesting that I should just back down and let things play out, only you made it seem like it was my idea?

Nick: Well, I did learn from the best.

Sharon: Well, I don’t manipulate people. I just gently nudge them toward a more constructive, healthy path.

Nick: Oh, yeah, that’s right.

Sharon: Are you enjoying yourself?

Nick: I am. Um, I also told noah that, you know, if he ever needs anything that he can come to us for whatever.

Sharon: You really think he’s gonna be okay?

Nick: I really do.

Tessa: It’s all for you.

Noah: What do you mean?

Tessa: The words, the songs, everything.

Noah: [ Gasps ]

[ Groans ]

[ Sighs ]

Chelsea: [ Laughs ]

Rey: What’s so funny?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Oh, it’s connor. Look at this picture. He’s with his new hockey teammates. He still thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world when he does the whole “rabbit ears,” you know, behind his teammate’s head. Look, it’s so cute! It’s so sweet. I just wish he could stay this age forever. Sorry, I’m doing the whole mom thing here, but I figure you have a sweet bond with him. I didn’t think you’d mind looking at these.

Rey: Hey, I don’t mind at all.

Chelsea: And then, look, this one — see? Then after his buddy realizes what he was doing, they just start laughing and giggling. It’s — oh, they’re just so happy, not a care in the world.

Rey: Mm. To be a kid again, huh?

Chelsea: Absolutely.

Rey: Or a proud parent.

Chelsea: Oh, I am definitely that.

Rey: You should be. You know, you’re raising a good, happy, healthy kid. Is he still liking hockey?

Chelsea: Loving it. And not to be a total mom again, but I actually think he’s pretty good at it.

Rey: You know, I saw him practicing at the ranch the other day. I think you’re right.

Sally: Did I hear you correctly?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] It was brave of you to put yourself all the way out there like that, so you deserve the same thing from me. So no more avoiding my feelings, no more holding back. I want you as much as you want me.

Sally: Oh, my god.

Adam: But…

Sally: Oh, no.

Adam: We both know that it’s not that simple.

Sally: Yeah, the best things never are. Look, and I need you to know that I am not willfully avoiding all of the implications or complications or any of the other “-tions” that are relevant here. I just thought that we should be totally up-front with each other before embarking on this next great adventure together.

Adam: Mm-hmm. And I think we both can agree that we need to take the next steps to get you installed at newman media and jump through the hoops to get you set up as coo, and then we can figure out how we’re gonna work together and complement each other, and then we can figure out what’s going on personally between us.

Sally: Oh. This conversation just took a turn. Um… [ Clears throat ] So is what you’re saying…

Adam: That we shouldn’t act on those feelings right this moment.

Sally: Like, at this very moment? ‘Cause, I mean, I agree. You’re right. Someone could walk in on us.

Adam: You know what I mean.

Sally: No, I do. I got it. Okay, well, so in that case, I should get back to work. Good night, adam.
