You know, I noticed when I mentioned the name of my hometown, not today, but a while back, that there was a flash of recognition on your face, perhaps even a glimmer of fear, when I simply said the name “Aria.” Now, I know you said you were not certain whether you had ever been there… but I know you were lying.

[ominous music]

[heart rate monitor beeping] Oh, my God.

So this is your fault, OK? You told him that you would protect him, but it was just a ploy to get him to do what you wanted him to do. You never gave a damn about my son, you bastard.

[Kate sighs]

Ah. Maggie, uh, yeah. I’m so sorry for your granddaughter.

You know, it’s ironic. It’s really painfully ironic. I’ve devoted…I’ve devoted most of my adult life to staying sober and helping other people stay sober. And yet, I watched drugs and alcohol claim my daughter, Summer. And now… I’ve watched drugs… put my granddaughter in a coma.

I made the unforgivable choice by getting behind the wheel after drinking, and I took your son’s life, and…

[heart rate monitor beeping]

You know, by the grace of God, I found forgiveness in my heart for you. And it was because of Holly. I love her, and you love her. And for hers and for Daniel’s…

[sighs] I knew I had to let go of my anger towards you.

The car will be here in five minutes to take us to the hospital. Would you need any help?

Um, you know, I– I was just packing Holly’s suitcase for Italy, and… I couldn’t stop thinking about how she looked on New Year’s Eve, just glowing and beautiful and with all the promises of the new year and maybe even new love.

[EJ chuckles] Can you believe my sweet -year-old baby girl still sleeps with this?

[both laugh]

[both chuckle] She has since she was three. Oh, my goodness, EJ. And she’s… she is all grown up, but she’s still my little girl.

Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you to Italy?

Oh, God. Listen, I’m–I mean, I could be gone weeks or months. And the work you’re doing here is important.

You know I will be there when I can.

OK. You’ve done so much already, EJ. And I’m so grateful that you reached out to those doctors and that she qualified for the treatment.

[chuckles] Ah! OK. So they said that she needs to be surrounded by things that are important to her, so, of course, I have the complete Taylor Swift collection, vault songs and all.

[both chuckle] Your favorite.

And all her favorite books. Oh, since she was little, she would read until all hours of the night.

[sighs] She’s such a special girl, EJ.

She is, she is.

She’s made me a better person. Kinder, more empathetic, curious. So when we come home and she is well again, I know you will have made sure those dealers will never hurt her or anyone else again.

Kate, I’m sorry. I just talked to the warden. He assured me that the guards were instructed to watch out for Lucas. I’m sure you talked to him, too.

[Steve sighs]

I have a question for you, Meleounis. What difference does it make if I ever set foot in your God-forsaken hometown?

[scoffs] Well, the difference is if you had been there, you would never forget it, huh? It is the most beautiful place on Earth, from the plains of Argolida to the mountains and to the old, beautiful sea, mm? But I’m sure you have seen all that and more. Am I right? So the real question is… why so secretive about it? Why don’t you want me to know?

Lucas, what happened? All they told us was that somebody jumped you in the yard.

That’s right, officer. They did jump me in the yard. They were all wearing the same thing. I couldn’t tell. I can’t ID anybody. They came at me from behind.

Did they say anything?

Oh, yeah, they said a lot. A lot of things I can’t say in front of my mother.

[sighs] They just basically told me that I asked the wrong people a few too many questions.

Mm-hmm. Which–which people? Who did you talk to?

[sighs] Uh, the guard, Adams, Hazel from the cafeteria, and then Mark the janitor. I thought they were cool. I thought I could trust them, but I guess I was wrong.

Yeah. Well, uh… we may have a dirty cop working in the Salem PD.

What? Why didn’t you tell us?

Because we didn’t suspect it until recently, and we do not know for sure. It’s just a hunch.

[Kate sighs] But it’s one we’re taking very seriously.

[tense music]

I wanted to spend a few more moments with Holly before you left. I hope you don’t mind.

So when–when will the helicopter be here?

The helicopter should be here in five minutes. The medical team are already on board. The DiMera jet is fueled and ready to go, and Nicole and Holly should be in Rome by nightfall.

[soft dramatic music]

That’s the last thing that she needs right now. She can’t have that.

Well, I can’t just stand around and do nothing.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. And I’m really not interested. But what you need to do is go back to Maggie’s, pack your bags, and shuffle on back to Greece or wherever it is you want to go.

Have you ever heard of The Pawn?

Ah, yes. The mere mention of The Pawn stops you in your tracks.

Well, the only pawn I know is in chess, and that wasn’t really my game. So I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Sure you do. And this is no game, believe me. Many years ago, Victor played a deadly match, and his coveted prize was the pawn. Unfortunately, I know a little more than this, but I am aware that this Pawn was a man of mystery who played an important role in Victor’s life and, by extension, in mine.

[heart rate monitor beeping]

Um, I’m going to take all of this with us.

[somber music] I want Holly to be surrounded by the love of everyone who’s been praying for her.

Doctors must be hopeful about the treatment. I mean, I know it wasn’t a given that she’d be accepted into the study.

God, a few weeks ago, we thought the SAT was the high-stakes test. You know, we–you know, we were going to start applying for colleges. And, you know, Holly was really anxious about that, but– but excited, too. God, everything that seemed so important then doesn’t even matter now.

Nicole, the doctors are going to help her. I got a real good feeling about this.

Me, too. But no matter what, I’m going to– I’m going to be there for her, talking to her, praying for her. I am never going to give up on my daughter.

[Nicole sighs]

[Nicole sniffles and sighs]

[heart rate monitor beeping]

You see, I thought the reward of Lucas getting out of this hellhole was worth the risk, because you assured us that people who were high up were going to be watching over him. But clearly, you were either lying or you made a misguided assumption, because my son is still here with a target on his back. So you, Harris, who either lied or made a misguided assumption, is going to get him the hell out of here now!

Just let me make a call. I’ll be right back.

[soft tense music]

[Kate sighs]

[heart rate monitor beeping]

Think there’s anything he can do?

Oh, there better be something that he can do. Because he got you into this. Now he needs to get you out.

[ominous music]

Why the hell would I leave? This is my apartment. Theresa is my girlfriend.

I’m sorry. Hey, knee-jerk reaction, all right? I’m just a little rattled right now. Of course you don’t have to leave, it’s your place. I’m just–I just–

I think– I think she is fine with showing her worst self to me, but it’s embarrassing for her to be like this in front of you. And it’s–I think it’s agitating her. You don’t have to leave. This is your place. I can’t tell you to leave, but I think the best thing she needs right now is probably some donuts and probably some coffee. I don’t know when she’s eaten last. Caffeine and the sugar might help her.

[soft dramatic music]

[Theresa sighs]

Right. OK, fine. I’ll go get some donuts and coffee.

[Nicole sighs]

[clears throat] If you could give us a moment with Holly?

Of course. Safe travels.

[heart rate monitor beeping]

[Nicole sighs]

Oh, I remember when she was a fussy baby.

[both chuckle] And I–I rocked her and I sang to her and I prayed that she would close those big eyes and go to sleep. And then they would just pop right open, and I’d curse under my breath and have to start all over again. And–and how I wish so badly that she would–

I can only imagine how fiercely she fought sleep, as she did everything else, just like her mother.

[Nicole sighs] I love you both so very much.

[heart rate monitor beeping]

[EJ sighs] Get well soon, sweet girl. In the meantime, I swear to you… I will get justice done in your name.

I’m sorry, Kate.

Why? What did they say?

I spoke to the governor state’s attorney, and the prerequisite for Lucas’s release is that he would provide evidence that could be used in court. And they won’t release him without him meeting those terms.

No, but you told me that two of the successful drug raids were because of the intel that he provided.

[suspenseful music]

Yeah, why isn’t that enough to get me out?

Because the raids didn’t lead to the source. Look, I’m not giving up. Even if I can’t get Lucas released yet, I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure he’s safe.

[scoffs] Well, you said that before, and look at him! I mean, excuse me if I don’t believe a word that comes out of your mouth.

[sighs] I’m really not in the mood to talk shop, Alex. I just came from saying goodbye to my granddaughter. She and her mother, they will soon be on their way to Italy for experimental treatments.

Oh, I’m sorry. I’m sure that was really rough, but… I just think you might really want to know about this.

[pensive music] It’s about Theresa.

[somber music] She had a slip-up last night. She got high. I’m really worried about her.

I called him last night because I didn’t know where to find her when she took off in the middle of the night, so, yeah, the cops ended up having to get involved.

We found her at a motel, high off her ass on ecstasy or whatever. I wanted to bring her to the hospital, but Brady and Detective Hunter said that it wasn’t necessary.

Mm. So you brought her home?

No, no, not right away. We thought that maybe it would make Theresa spiral downward even further if people saw that she was using again, so we stayed at the motel a little longer.

Oh, that’s terribly sad news, on top of the other sad news. I’m very sorry to hear it.

Yeah, I’m sorry, too. It is sad, like you said. Anyway, Brady sent me out to get coffee and donuts, but I think the truth is he is trying to get rid of me because he thinks that I might be agitating Theresa even more. Because she thinks that I might be, like, you know, judging her.

Right. Um, if Brady sent you out for coffee and donuts, caffeine and sugar will definitely help her. I’m proud of you, Alex, for including Brady. He’s a recovering alcoholic, as you know, and he knows Theresa very well. That was a very good call.

Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I know it was a good call. It’s just now–now I’m just thinking–

After Brady’s gone…

And it’s just me and Theresa, and she’s sober and normal again, the hell do I do? What do I say to her?

Well, I would encourage her to go back to her meetings. That’s very important.

Right. Yes, definitely, and I’m going to do that, for sure.

And I would be very supportive of her and kind and not judgmental.

Right. I also don’t think I’m going to drink around her anymore.

Well, I’d say, in the first few weeks after a relapse, that would be very helpful, yes. But, you know, eventually, recovering alcoholics and addicts, they– they need to tolerate people drinking in their presence and not be affected by it.

Well, still, I’m going to abstain from alcohol for a while.

Well, that’s very good of you. You know I’m here for Theresa anytime, night or day. I’m here for you, too, Alex. If you–if you need help, advice… just call. Yeah.

[Alex exhales deeply]

What are you talking about? What are these horrible things that you’ve done recently?

I shouldn’t have said anything.

[Theresa sighs]

OK, just don’t– I know things look bleak right now. I know you’re down and everything. But, hey, it’s always– what’s that expression? It’s always darkest before the dawn, right?

Yeah, I know the expression. I wish I believed it.

You–hey, you should believe it. I believe it. It’s basically a pattern in my life. Every time I feel like I can’t tolerate any more sadness or disappointment, things get–get a little better. It’s either that, or I’m amazingly resilient.

[Theresa chuckles]

I think it’s the latter.

Hope so. The point is you’re going to be OK, because you are one of the strongest women that I know.

[soft dramatic music] And you’re resilient and you will fight back from this. And you will be just fine. And you’ll fight back not only for your son… but for yourself.

You know, with everything around us going so wrong, this just feels so right.

Yeah, it does.

[delicate dramatic music] I just, uh, I don’t know. I can’t help from feeling guilty, you know, from feeling this happy when I know that Nicole and my dad are just down the hall feeling so miserable.

[inhales deeply] Yeah? Well, at least with Holly going to Italy tomorrow, there’s some hope.

Yeah. I mean, my dad was a patient at that Italian hospital and worked miracles for him. You know, this whole thing with Holly, it’s kind of made me realize something, something important, you know, that I– I really think that you and I should talk about. Tonight.

[soft dramatic music]

[sighs softly]

Mm. That feels so nice.

[both chuckle]

You know, the benefits of human touch are profound.

Mm.

You know, they say that research shows that it lowers the heart rate and blood pressure and reduces depression and boosts the immune system. Even mitigates pain. I’m sorry. That was too nerdy doctor stuff, wasn’t it?

No, no, not at all.

[both chuckle] I love that you have a cerebral take on romance.

OK. OK, then. Well, then I will tell you one more nerdy doctor thing. Here, take my hand. When people hold hands or engage in any kind of intimate behavior…

Mm-hmm?

It triggers a release of oxytocin in the brains, and it reduces depression and fear and anxiety and it pumps up the feelings of trust and compassion.

Well, although not a nerdy doctor, obviously, I have read up on oxytocin and its effects.

Mm-hmm?

And they call it the love hormone, don’t they?

They do. They do. And it’s definitely working its magic on me right now.

[both sigh]

[phone ringing] I’m expecting a call from my mom, and she is not happy with me, as you know.

[Brady sighs]

[Ava sighs and chuckles softly]

OK. Let’s break this down. Two productive raids and a third that didn’t pay off. All spurred by information from the same informant. Michaels, what do you think happened?

I mean, I believe the intel was solid.

Well, the more I think about it, there can only be one explanation.

And the search warrants were sealed. And as far as we know, it was only our teams that executed them.

Theresa blames herself for a lot of this.

I know. I know, and that’s why we gotta find her. Look, man, if I’m wrong, the worst-case scenario is she’s going to be mad at both of us, but if I’m right… we gotta prevent a slip from becoming a skyfall.

Well, we are still investigating Holly Jonas’ overdose case. So are you suggesting that we look into Theresa Donovan’s financial records to support that investigation, Mr. Black? Because if so, I can get a search warrant right now to do so. So are you telling me that Ms. Donovan’s credit card records can provide evidence to support and aid the Salem PD on this ongoing investigation?

Yeah, and I knew sort of then and there that she, was, um… she was special. Not just because of the way she–she split the muffin, but maybe just the smile on her face while she did it.

[chuckles] Maybe it was just everything about her. Anyway, uh, we got to talking, and it turned out that she was doing PR for a nonprofit that I was covering.

And the rest is history.

And the newlyweds drink their first drink together as a married couple.

I did some research. It’s a celebration of Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet.

[laughs] And it’s celebrated on his birthday, which is next week.

Yeah. So you hide things in containers all over the city, and then you post clues where to find them.

Right. And when you do, you take what’s hidden, and you replace it with a new treasure. Is that right?

Yeah. It’s a points game. And so every time you find a new item, you get some points.

What’s the purpose of it?

To have fun, Dad.

[chuckles]

And it’s an adventure. It gets you outdoors.

What if we did it for charity? We could get “The Spectator” to sponsor it.

Yeah, how about if the hospital benefits from this?

And full disclosure because I do not want any secrets between us… Eric was there for Holly on Christmas morning when she was hungover and needed moral support.

You knew Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve?

Yes. When we came home Christmas morning, I went upstairs to check on her, and she felt awful. She had a headache, and she was nauseous, and she told me everything. How did you find out?

Johnny told me. He said that she drunk-dialed him and left a rather long, rather incoherent message. He was worried, obviously, and so he rushed back home to check on her.

And why didn’t you tell me that?

Well, I didn’t want to upset you. You were already at wits’ end. Why didn’t you tell me at Christmas?

[chuckles] Because Holly was embarrassed, and she didn’t want anyone to know.

But it was fine to tell Eric?

I didn’t tell Eric. Honey, Holly and I ran into him when we went on our walk Christmas morning. And she tried to hide the fact that she was hungover, but Eric, being a recovering alcoholic, could see right through it. So…he was just very kind to her, and he was not judgmental at all.

Hmm.

Oh, no. OK, what are you thinking? You suddenly got so worried.

[groans]

[sighs] I– I wasn’t sure that I was even going to bring this up, but you’re gonna find out sooner or later.

Rafe contacted me earlier and said that he has been questioning Holly’s high school friends. And they admitted that they have been dabbling in weed, and so has she.

[dramatic music]

We weren’t there with him at school either, were we, causing trouble? I mean, maybe we shouldn’t have sent him to boarding school in the first place.

I know. I thought about that too. Maybe we shouldn’t have. I mean–I mean, he spent a lot of time away from us lately, especially me. I haven’t been ar– I mean, I called him. I visited. I had him here for summer on vacation. I thought I was close to him, I thought I knew who he was, and now I’m sitting here thinking, hey, Dad, maybe you didn’t know your son as well as you thought you did.

So… Holly’s friends told Rafe that she smoked weed.

They did.

[sighs] I know I– I shouldn’t be shocked, but… I am.

As am I. Her night of drinking also caught me by surprise as well, but I just chalked it up to a one-time thing.

Yeah, me too. Well, I mean… at least weed is legal here.

Not if you’re not yet .

[sighs] Well, now I can’t help but wonder– I mean, what if– I mean, would Holly go beyond that? Would she– would she take something more hard-core?

[groans]

Hi. Why are you taking aspirin before you get out of bed?

What are you thinking?

You know… that morning she was hungover, I saw her take pills that I thought could have been aspirin, but maybe not.

Nicole, Nicole, look at me. Let’s not jump to any dire conclusions, OK? Holly was hungover. The logical explanation is, she had a headache. She took aspirin for it.

[sighs]

And experimenting occasionally with marijuana does not make her an addict, OK?

OK, OK. You know, but we also don’t know if Tate’s really using drugs. He’s a good kid.

Why would you think that? Like, the only reason he is now living in Salem is because he was expelled from boarding school. How does that qualify him as a good kid?

Well, OK, but how did he get expelled, all right? Was it because of some dumb prank that went sideways? Kids do stupid things. I’m stating the obvious. And that just might include Holly. It’s just that– that doing drugs is just a lot worse than being stupid, isn’t it, because it’s illegal, and it’s dangerous.

[sighs] And I– I can’t believe I’m gonna say this… but maybe Holly isn’t as honest and innocent as I thought she was.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping]

You know, you’ve grown up so much. Feels like yesterday you were just a little girl. My little girl. I remember… the first time you called me Daddy. Holly, I just want to tell you how sorry I am. You know, when I left you and your mom to go to Africa, I just thought it was the right thing to do. But now I know that there is– there was nothing more important in this world than you are to me and being your dad.

[smooches]

Now I get a deal? What kind of deal?

Well, you may be or may not be aware of the drug problem in Salem. But a dealer was caught who was back in the game for less than hours after he was released from Statesville. And I questioned him. And I believe that whoever’s behind this drug epidemic is right here inside this prison. So I spoke to Mayor Price, and she gave me the green light to take action. That’s where you come in. I need your help getting intel on the inside.

You got to be out of your damn mind.

[sighs]

You ever hear the saying “snitches get stitches”? You’ve heard of that, right? Well, here it’s different. You don’t get stitches. You get broken bones. You get your skull stepped on. That’s what happens. When I was in the yard the other day, I saw somebody get shanked. They got shanked just for reporting contraband, for a freaking cell phone. They carried the guy out in a body bag.

I know it’s a lot to ask.

Yeah, no kidding.

Yeah, but I also know that you were an undercover prison informant before, Lucas, right, years ago? And that last year, you really helped John Black, Steve Johnson, Roman Brady with a certain Orpheus situation.

I thought that Orpheus killed my mother. And you don’t even know how many times I almost got popped and how many times I almost lost my life. I can’t, all right? You’re gonna have to fight the good fight against drugs on your own, OK? I am not your guy. My informant days are over.

OK, I get it. I understand your reservations. I do. But maybe you’ll change your mind if I tell you how I can help you.

You know, we haven’t had a whole lot of interaction, really. I barely know him. I don’t even know if I’ll get the chance to now, given he’s in so much trouble.

Yeah, she must be a wreck.

She is a wreck. I’ve been trying to help her out as best I can. I’m trying to navigate the situation with her, but instead I totally blew it with her.

[sighs]

Brady, I totally understand what you’re feeling. I feel it too. Did I miss a sign or something? Could I have prevented this somehow, or…

[sighs] Is it just that Tate takes after me?

OK, hey, Theresa, don’t. No.

[sighs] No, I’m serious. I mean, I’m starting to feel like I’m responsible. Maybe I’m the one who failed our son.

[breathing heavily]

What are you thinking?

I just said I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Yeah, neither do I. But, EJ, Rafe said that Holly’s friends admitted to smoking pot, which is considered fairly benign these days, right? But if they were taking a more powerful drug, do you really think they would tell the cops? Do you really think Holly would tell us? No, no way.

No, no, I suppose not.

[sighs] Now I’m realizing that it’s possible that I’ve deluded myself about Holly for a while now. You know, I thought that she was well-balanced and responsible and that if she was struggling or she had an issue that she would talk to me and I could get her the help she needed.

[sighs] EJ, I just–I never thought that she would resort to drugs. Oh, God, we got to get going. We have to get back to the hospital. I’ll meet you in the car.

[sighs] Dear God, could Tate have been telling the truth?

How’d you blow it with Theresa? What’d you do?

You know everything that went down with Tate and Holly, right?

Oh, yeah. It’s “The Spectator’s” biggest story right now. If that was Thomas and Charlotte, I’d be losing my mind.

Yeah, well, Theresa, she sure the hell is. And I’m trying to be supportive, but I guess I crossed a boundary of hers or whatever. She kicked me out of the room…

Hmm.

Told me she wanted to be alone with Brady so they could discuss their son.

Well, that must have been tough for you.

Yeah, but I mean, I get it, you know? Brady’s Tate’s dad. I understand that. I’m just trying to figure out what the hell my role is in all this. I’m the boyfriend of the woman with the teenager going through a terrible time. It’s new territory for me. I’m a little lost. I keep screwing things up.

Right. Well, why don’t you ask your dad for advice?

[scoffs]

Justin, I mean. I know he’s not your biological father, but he raised teenage boys.

Yeah, unfortunately, him and I aren’t on the best of terms at the moment either– also my fault.

[dramatic music]

[sighs] I guess it’s just because my whole life has been turned upside down. This whole Victor thing, him being my real dad… did a number on my head. I keep lashing out at Justin for no good reason. I don’t know, man, maybe it’s just in my blood to ruin all my relationships.

[sighs]

Theresa, look. Hey, hey, stop. It’s not your fault. Anything that happened with Tate and Holly that night is not your fault. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s probably mine. I’m the one that hasn’t been there– enough anyway, obviously.

I mentioned before that I made a few calls. The first one was to the clinic in Italy that brought me back from the brink of death. They were very encouraging when I spoke to them about Holly’s condition. And although they couldn’t promise– they couldn’t promise anything, I really do think it could help her. It’s an extraordinary facility, world-renowned.

OK, I appreciate the call, I do, but the doctors– the doctors have been great. They’ve done so much for her. And is–is taking her to Italy really the answer? What if something happens to her while she’s traveling?

We’ll take every precaution. I’ll hire an expert physician who will accompany us for the entire trip. They will never leave her side. You just say the word, and I’ll make the arrangements.

OK, I’ll consider it. I just want to talk to Kayla first.

Yeah, they–they worked miracles on EJ there and brought him back from the brink of death, as he said. So we’re hoping they can do the same for Holly.

I knew it. I knew that security guard was following me up and down the aisles. So I should have expected that after I checked out that the store owner and that security dirtbag was gonna pull me aside and demand to search my purse.

Why didn’t you just tell them you were a cop?

I did. But I left my badge in my jacket in my car. And so I said, let me go get it.

Yeah.

And the store owner gets up in my face and says, you’re not going anywhere.

Oh, my God. Honey, I’m sorry. Well, it’s a good thing the unis showed up and they recognized you, right?

[sighs] They called the damn cops on me, Rafe. They said I nicked a brand-new lip gloss that I had in my purse I bought two days ago. Ugh, I was just– I was shaking. I’m just so–I’m so furious, I could just–

No, but if things go the way we hope, in a few days, she will be getting treatment at a world-renowned hospital in Italy.

No, that’s–what I meant was that I’m glad Holly’s receiving treatment, because Eric and I have been praying every day for her recovery.

Well, I mean, I wasn’t in the past, but… pregnancy, the miscarriage, and now… having our prayers answered with this beautiful baby boy, all that changed me. It made me more religious.

Right. Well, I can see how it would. So I take it Jude is with Eric?

Yeah, he is. I’m just out picking up a few things. We’re having Eric’s mom and stepfather over for dinner tonight, which we have been trying to do for a while. But I’ve kind of been putting it off.

Yeah, it’s more than that. Truth is, I’m a little intimidated by his mother. She’s just– she’s so perfect, you know?

I get it. Marlena was my mother-in-law too. But may I suggest that you pour yourself a large glass of wine before they get there, because if you start the night out wired, it’s only gonna go downhill from there.

You know, you don’t have to do this today if you’re not feeling up to it. You can have the deputy mayor step in.

Today of all days, I am doing this. Mm-mm, my mother marched with Dr. King as a young woman, and I wouldn’t be here today without her…

You know, some people might say that Dr. King would want me to shrug off what happened to me today and just push forward. But I don’t think that’s what he meant at all. I think that when you see injustice that you need to do something.

Man, I feel for Jada. Getting profiled as a shoplifter, that kind of stuff really shakes you up.

Anything like that ever happen to you?

Are you kidding? Just the other day, I was walking in the square, and this lady, she was sitting on a bench by herself, and she had her purse next to her. She sees me walking, and she takes her purse and she puts it on her lap.

You’re not really shocked.

I mean, yeah, I kind of am. I feel like I’ve spent a lot of time with you, and I’ve just never seen it.

Yeah, that’s because you weren’t looking. But it happened everywhere– here, in London, in Italy.

Italy?

Yeah. You remember how people were looking at us because we were an interracial couple? When Mama was a kid, it would have been illegal for us to get married in many places in this country.

[sighs] Well… I’m sure as hell glad that we’re not back there.

Yeah. We’ve come a long way. But we can’t pretend like we don’t still have a long way to go.

A big glass of wine, check. Actually, I bought two bottles. So check and check.

Yeah, well, as you know, Eric doesn’t drink. And his parents will probably only have a glass, so…

[sighs] Look, Marlena knows that she comes off as intimidating, you know? And she also seems very put together. But she’s just–she’s a real human with real problems. I mean, you know Marlena’s daughter Sami, Eric’s twin? I mean, she was a holy terror for years. She still is, in my opinion.

Yeah, Eric’s mentioned Sami once or twice.

Well, did he also mention that Marlena had an affair with John and it sent Sami off the deep end when she was a teenager?

Mm-mm. I can’t even imagine Marlena having an affair.

Yeah, well, you see? She’s not perfect, just like the rest of us.

[soft music] And I’ve found that if you ask Marlena for advice up front, you know, she feels useful, and you don’t feel judged, and then the rest of the night will just be smooth sailing.

I have to admit– I’m embarrassed to admit it, but there’s so much in here that I had no idea about. I mean, how have I never heard of this guy Bayard Rustin? I mean, he helped organize the March on Washington. An openly gay African American man in the s? I mean, this person is just incredibly brave, especially for that time.

Yeah, he was a true hero. And the reason you’ve never heard of him is that back then, a lot of people didn’t want to link together civil rights and gay rights and any other kind of equal rights as being a part of the same movement. And sadly, that’s still the case today. As if there’s only so much equality to go around.

Yeah. Well, I am really impressed that you’ve done the research, Leo, and brought all of this to light. In fact, I think, given the serious nature of the column, we should publish this under your own name and not the Lady Whistleblower byline.

Assuming we can publish it at all.

You know, I was just thinking, back when I was in high school, I was in the lunchroom, and this random girl, without even asking if she could touch my hair, she just comes up and starts touching my hair.

Oh, no.

And she’s like, oh, it’s so soft. And then when I went home, I told my mom about it. And then she gave me this whole lecture about microaggressions and how I should have stood up for myself. I mean, I was just trying to eat my lunch. And now I’ve worked up an appetite. I want to order the full breakfast menu.

I know Eric’s been spending a lot of time at the hospital with me and Holly, and I’m sure that hasn’t been easy for you, given our history. But I– I just want you to know that I appreciate how generous you’ve been about it.

I haven’t been that generous, Nicole.

‘Cause when I first got engaged to my first husband, I wanted so badly for my dad to approve, because my mom sure didn’t. Yeah, she wasn’t exactly thrilled that I was marrying a white Jewish guy.

Hmm. Well, she got over it, I hope.

Sort of. But he disappeared on me, so it was all moot.

Well, you know, Chanel and I were just watching this documentary recently about the Lovings. She was Black. He was white. And so the state of Virginia refused to recognize their marriage. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which struck down all state laws banning interracial marriage, allowing us to marry whoever we wanted.

Mm, not whoever we wanted because not same-sex marriages. And, you know, being a Black woman who’s also bi, I just stopped labeling myself altogether, because it’s just exhausting being so many types of other.

Hmm.

Right. But choosing to not acknowledge race or gender, I mean, that’s pretty exhausting too, right?

Yeah.

I mean, especially if that’s who you are.

[sighs]

You know, I can’t believe that we’ve never talked about this before.

Yeah, well, I’m really glad that we’re talking about it now.

[chuckles] And I want to thank those of you who’ve already come out to serve your community this morning and to encourage those who haven’t to spend your afternoon volunteering.

[chuckles] You have the power and responsibility to improve your community in some way, big or small. May we continue to live in Dr. King’s spirit every day. Now, we’re– oh, a lot of us, we’re familiar with many of his words. So I’ve chosen to begin with a quote from that great writer James Baldwin.

[coughs] Not everything that is faced…

[voice breaking] Can be changed–

[softly] Can be changed.

But nothing…

Nothing… both: Can be changed until it is faced.

What do you mean you haven’t been generous? And not only have you been understanding about Eric spending time with me and Holly. Oh, my God, I mean, Sloan, you– you let me off the hook when I kidnapped your son.

Yeah, very reluctantly, believe me, especially whenever the next day–

You know, right after I told you to stay away from Jude, I saw you having lunch with Eric and Holly, looking like the happy family you used to be, all for the world to see. And, you know, that was pretty upsetting to me.

Would be for me too. But what did Eric say when you mentioned it to him?

I didn’t tell him. I don’t know why I didn’t tell him. But now I’m glad that he had that time with Holly.

[sniffles] He’ll always love her… just like he’ll always love you. And I’ll just have to learn to live with that. I should follow up with Leo. Thank you again, Nicole, for the advice.

Like, sometimes I create them special cakes and things like that that makes them feel special. Like the other day, there was this lady, and she was in hospice, and she had been a beekeeper, and so I made her these little bumblebee cookies. And when she saw them, she was so excited. And the look on her face, it was just like, she was so happy. She was so grateful.

Yeah, and then even with my mom, you know, she’s all about giving back, and she’s the mayor, but then she also does this podcast. And she’s actually recording an episode this morning. I can’t wait to hear it when I get home.

[coughs] Oh, sorry. And sadly, you also had homeless addicts and wayward kids from the projects who tried to escape reality the only way they could: using drugs. And, well, that’s going on today, as we–

Well, to state the obvious, that depends on how or whether Lucas can pull this off.

Well, as I told Harris, Lucas was able to get John and Steve and me to Orpheus. He is very smart. I have complete confidence in him, Kate.

[sighs] That’s very touching. It is. But if he gets caught, he could die.

In my opinion, that is very unlikely. What is more likely is that Lucas gets his life back.

I haven’t told anyone this, but when we spread our son’s ashes outside, I said a prayer. And it’s been a long time since I prayed. And look what happened. Holly overdosed and almost died and is in a coma. So if I ever had any doubt then, it is very clear now how God feels about me.

No. No. Nicole, no. This has nothing to do with how God feels about you, about any of us. You know that. Tragedies happen, and none of us knows why, but it certainly has nothing to do with God punishing us, OK? When tragedies befall us, all we can try and do is remain as strong as we can and to try and focus as best we can on what we still have to be grateful for.

And he– he would never hurt her, never. But my son is in a jail cell right now, and he got beaten by a grown man because EJ refuses to– he revoked his bail, and he will not charge him as a minor. He wants to charge him as an adult for possession of illegal drugs, Nic.

And I hate to ask this of you, but is there any way you can just get him to reason a little bit because I know you’re scared to death of losing your little girl. And I hope to God she pulls through. I know that EJ feels helpless about Holly’s condition.

I know Tate said they were Holly’s drugs. Do you believe that to be true?

Nic, I can’t be sure. There’s no way of knowing.

I’ve been thinking you confessed to protecting Tate. So you wouldn’t do that if you didn’t think he was innocent, right?

No, no, no, Nic. To be honest with you, I didn’t give a damn whether he was guilty or not guilty at that point. I just knew that EJ was targeting him, and I wanted to deflect his wrath on me. That was my parental instinct that kicked in. All that said, though, yeah, I believe my son is telling the truth.

So you think Holly is the one using drugs and EJ and I could have helped her, but we were just oblivious?

No. Nicole, Holly has had a difficult life thus far. I mean, it’s been unstable. She didn’t get to know her father at all. Your life, personal life, romantic life, just like mine, for dear God has been erratic and up and down, and that can affect a kid. We know as parents that these kids, they can put things right under our noses, and we can easily overlook them. So yes, it’s possible that Holly could have resorted to something like that.

Damn you, Brady. Damn you. How dare you talk about my daughter like that?

No, no. Nicole, this is not your fault. Do you hear me? Brady is just trying to convince you that it’s Holly’s fault, so he can get his son off the hook, and that is not going to happen.

EJ, I just– I feel so helpless. Because if I lose Holly, then I don’t–

I’m sorry, I could not convince Nicole to do anything. Out of desperation, I made a call to Mayor Price and demanded that she fire EJ, but she said that he’s still operating within the confines of the law. And until he crosses a line, she can’t interfere.

Look, it really isn’t a good time right now.

Oh, well, it is going to be much worse if you don’t listen and listen hard Miss Lying, Baby-stealing Sack of You Know What. I know you already know– so don’t pretend that you don’t– that my Dimitri was sent to supermax, meaning I have no idea if or when I will see his gorgeous face again, and that is on you.

Well, look, I’m really sorry. I am. I just–it’s a federal prison. There’s nothing I can do.

Well, there is something you could have done, something you should have done before he was sent there, isn’t there? Because you promised me if he turned himself in, you would have the most serious charges dropped. And instead of that, he’s now in the damn penitentiary.

I do hope that. And I hope they can really enjoy the happiness that a new baby brings.

I’m, um–I’m at the square. But the baby’s gone. Someone stole our baby boy.

You know, I do wonder how Sloan is gonna manage it all. She’s got that very high-powered career. I can’t imagine she’ll be giving that up.

I wouldn’t think so, no. She seems pretty driven, very ambitious, and raising an infant is a very, very demanding job by itself.

[cell phone ringing]

Yeah. Oh, sorry. Huh, it’s Eric. Hi, honey. We were just talking about you.

Mom, hey, it’s Jude. He’s been kidnapped.

Oh, dear God. Another missing baby.

And since Chad didn’t like that, to put it mildly, he bought Gwen’s half of the paper just so he could fire him.

Wow, that’s, uh– that’s pretty extreme, not to mention crappy.

Yeah, yeah, it was both of those things. And for me, it was the last straw.

I know where the lake is, and I know what you’re insinuating, and I will repeat, Rafe, Nicole did not kidnap that child. And since she didn’t have a vehicle, where the hell could she have taken him, huh? So why don’t you use your head, and instead of fixating on accusing my wife of something that she didn’t do, why don’t you focus on trying to find her? Dear God, why did she leave her phone here? And where the hell could she have disappeared to?

I am so sorry for what you’re going through, Steph, and–and for Chad to feel that threatened by this guy that he resorted to getting him fired from his job–

And I know exactly what you’re thinking, that it’s too much of a coincidence that Nicole and Eric and Sloan’s baby disappeared at the same time, especially given Nicole’s history. But damn it, Rafe, I know what must have happened. Someone took her to get to me. Now I don’t know if it was Clyde Weston or Ava Vitali, but whoever the hell did it, just find my wife. I need her back to me. Find her.
