At Society, Nikki frantically called Victoria’s name. Victor asked what was going on. Nikki heard Victoria scream and the sounds of a car crash, then the call dropped. Victor instructed Nikki to call Victoria right back. Nikki did so, and didn’t get an answer. Victor called security and told them to check all the roads between Newman Tower and Victoria’s house and between the tower and the ranch.

At Crimson Lights, Nick said he’d take his drink to go, and get out of Sharon’s hair so she could go home and have a nice night with her husband. With a sour expression, Sharon said she was sure Rey would have a nice night, but it wouldn’t be with her. She craned her neck and looked out to the patio where Chelsea and Connor sat. Sharon brought Nick up to speed on Chelsea, Rey and Connor’s plans. Nick told Sharon that she had nothing to worry about, because a hockey game with a kid in tow was the opposite of romantic. Sharon knew Rey was 100% trustworthy, but she didn’t trust Chelsea. Sharon recognized that Chelsea made an enormous change, but this was an overnight trip, and it was hard for Sharon not to instinctively jump to conclusions when it came to Chelsea.

Nick agreed that Chelsea wasn’t the most trustworthy person, but he told Sharon that her husband was solid. She knew, but she didn’t see why a hockey game had to turn into an overnight trip. Nick joked that Rey must not really want to go on the trip, since if he did, he would already be on his way to Chicago by now. Sharon grinned and said Nick always knew how to make her feel better.

Out on the patio, Connor told Chelsea that they’d miss the puck drop if they didn’t leave soon. Chelsea thought Rey would’ve been back by now too. She called him and left a message checking in. Afterward, she gave Connor a reassuring smile and told him there was still plenty of time to make it to Chicago.

Victor called Nick and asked if he heard from Victoria recently or knew where she’d been driving to. The answer was no on both accounts. Nick learned there may have been an accident, so he said he’d go looking for Victoria. Victor already called the police and instructed his team to look for Victoria. He implored his son to drive safe in this terrible weather. Nick told Sharon what was going on. She was optimistic that everything was okay. Right after he left, Chelsea came in and told Sharon that Rey should’ve been back by now, and he wasn’t answering any of her calls.

Sharon called Rey and got voicemail. She left a message that they were starting to get a little worried because he was late. She asked him to call her back, and she said she loved him. Afterward, Sharon told Chelsea that Rey was probably driving very slowly because of the fog. Chelsea saw what a conscientious driver Rey was when they went to visit her mom. She said he probably just didn’t think it was safe to be on the road. Sharon nodded, but it was obvious that she was worried, so Chelsea asked about it. Sharon wasn’t worried about Rey, but the Newmans thought Victoria may have been in an accident. Sharon theorized that Rey heard about the accident and went to the scene. Chelsea hoped Victoria was alright. Sharon did too.

Chance went to Crimson Lights after his shift at the station. Sharon inquired about any accidents. He hadn’t heard anything. She told him about Victoria, so he called the station to see if there had been any new accident reports since he left.

Out on the patio, Connor pouted because they were going to miss the game. Chelsea told him that Rey must’ve gotten caught up in police work. She promised that even if they didn’t get to Chicago tonight, Rey would make it up to him, because that was the kind of guy Rey was.

Back inside, Chance said that there had been a couple fender benders, but no major accidents were reported, so if Victoria had an accident, it was minor. Sharon was relieved to hear that. She wished Rey would show up. Chance thought he already left for Chicago. Sharon explained that Rey forgot the tickets and went home to get them, but he’d been gone for awhile, and Connor was getting anxious. Chance was concerned because when he talked to Rey earlier, he’d been leaving the ranch with the tickets, and he should’ve been back by now.

In the Grand Phoenix suite, Adam headed over to the window. He flashed back to the first time he and Sally got a room. He remembered their passionate kiss and frenetically unbuttoning each other’s clothes, before falling back on the bed. After the memory, Adam called Sally and told her not to rush, because he could see that the fog was getting worse. He promised he was patiently waiting. Victor called Adam and asked if he’d heard from Victoria. He hadn’t, but he acknowledged he was the last one Victoria would call, even in an emergency. Adam asked if there was anything he could do to help, and Victor appreciated the offer, but he didn’t have a way for Adam to help. Sally entered and overheard Adam say Victoria was strong enough to handle herself in any situation. Victor agreed, and the call ended.

Adam told Sally that Victoria may have been in a car accident, but he didn’t want to jump to the worst case scenario. He said that this kind of put a damper on his celebration with Sally. She was understanding and said they’d have plenty of time for that. She asked if he really thought Victoria was in trouble. He didn’t know, but his dad sounded worried. He just wished someone would call and let him know what was going on. Sally was sure Adam would hear as soon as there was news, but he didn’t think his family would think to keep him in the loop. He lamented that he was always last on the list of contacts, if he even made the list at all. Sally countered Adam’s assertion by reminding him that Victor just called. Adam said Victor only called because he needed information. He felt like he was only a priority when Victor thought he could be useful.

Sally noted that Victor was constantly shooing her out of the office because he wanted to talk top secret things with Adam. Adam asked if Sally was trying to cheer him up by pointing out that Victor was ruder to her than he was to Adam. She asked if it was working. He said he wasn’t worried about being part of the inner sanctum. He just wanted to hear whether Victoria was alright. Sally realized Adam was really worried. “Well of course I am!,” he snapped. Adam was offended because he thought Sally was implying that he’d be happy if Victoria got seriously hurt or worse, because that would improve Adam and Sally’s chances at Newman Locke.

Now Sally was offended, and she decided to leave. “This was a mistake, and I don’t just mean our little celebration here,” she said. Adam softened when he realized he’d upset Sally. She was deeply hurt that he’d even suggested she’d be so cold and calculated about a woman’s life. She thought it was clear that he didn’t know her at all, and while she could take harsh judgments from others, she wasn’t going to take it from him. He clarified that he mean it that way. Sally thought Adam knew she wasn’t the kind of person who automatically assumed the worst of him. He apologized for the cruel and unfair comment. He admitted the truth was that he’d been asking himself that same twisted question. “Am I genuinely concerned about my sister or is a part of me thinking if something were to happen to her, would that be a leg up for me at Newman Locke?,” Adam revealed.

Adam hated that he’d entertained that thought, even for a second. Sally thought the fact that Adam hated it proved he didn’t actually feel that way. He suggested that he was just trying to convince himself that he wasn’t that cold and selfish. He admitted that the plan to pay off Locke was more about impressing Victor than helping Victoria. He’d seen Victoria’s relationship with a con artist as an opportunity, and that wasn’t particularly brotherly. Sally said Victoria would’ve done the same thing if the situation were reversed. She said Victoria and Adam’s sibling bond was based on one-upmanship. Adam took the blame for that. He said he’d spent years looking at Victoria as a rival, so she felt the need to defend herself. Sally wouldn’t let Adam believe he was cold and selfish, because she knew in her heart that he wasn’t. “I wouldn’t be falling in love with someone like that,” she said. “Are you saying that you’re falling in love with me?,” he asked.

Back at Society, Victor and Nikki looked at each other with worried expressions. Nick came in. He’d had no luck finding Victoria, and when the fog got even worse, he decided to get off the road. Nikki wanted to go search, but Victor and Nick both said no, because it was too dangerous. Nick told his mom to let the professionals do their job. “You know, this is my fault. If I had not told my security team to stop tailing Victoria and instead go after Ashland Locke, we now would’ve known where she is,” Victor said. Nikki told Victor not to blame himself. She thought he made the right decision having Ashland tailed, since they all knew how dangerous that man was. Nick asked where Ashland was right now. Victor didn’t know. He was waiting for an answer form his team. Nick was concerned that this car crash Nikki heard wasn’t an accident and that someone had hurt Victoria on purpose. Victor didn’t even want to think about that. Victor got a call that infuriated him – his team couldn’t find Victoria, and they’d lost track of Ashland earlier, and they’d waited to tell Victor instead of informing him immediately.

Victor slammed his phone on the table and ranted about his team’s utter incompetence. Nick defended the security team – it was so foggy out that he wasn’t surprised they lost track of Ashland. Victor’s team called and told him there was a report of an accident. Nick and Nikki were upset when he relayed the news.

Victoria was unconscious in her car, which had hit a tree. Smoke billowed out from under the vehicle. Ashland’s car had also crashed, and he was passed out as well. When he came to, he called Victoria’s name. He saw her car and sprang into action, trying to get to her, but his door was pinned by a fallen tree. He kept calling for Victoria, who was unresponsive. He grabbed his phone to call the police, but the screen was smashed. To his horror, flames suddenly engulfed the hood of Victoria’s car.

Ashland screamed for help, then he grunted in exertion as he pried the door open. He’d injured his leg in the crash, and he quickly hobbled over to Victoria’s car. The flames had traveled up to Victoria’s door now, and Ashland burned himself when he tried to free her. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around his hand to block the flames, then he tried again. This time, he was able to open the door. He checked her pulse and thanked God she was still alive. Lifting her out of the car, he put her over his shoulder and promised he wouldn’t let her die.

Ashland burst into a rundown cabin and put Victoria on a bed. He said she was tough – she’d survived everything he did to her, so she could certainly survive a car crash. He looked at his hand, which was red and blistering, then he returned to encouraging Victoria. She began to cough, and she opened her eyes and saw Ashland’s face. She scrambled backward on the bed, ordering him to get away from her. Ashland urged Victoria to stay still because she might have internal injuries. She bombarded him with questions about where they were and why he was still around. He told her about the crash and fire, and he asked if she had her phone. She didn’t. He asked if she’d be okay without him while he went to look for her phone. She said yes, and he told her to stay put, then he left.

After Ashland was gone, Victoria tried to get up, but she couldn’t walk because she’d hurt her knee. She yelled for help, and Ashland ran back inside. He couldn’t get the phone, because the whole car was on fire. She was sure there must be a house nearby, but he said this was the only structure in the area, so they were stranded. She figured someone would drive by and see the wreck soon. He turned away, and she realized there was something he wasn’t telling her.

Ashland said he was just shaken up because of seeing Victoria unconscious in the car and the fire. He was grateful she was okay. Victoria asked what Ashland was even doing here. She looked fearful and wondered if the crash was actually an accident or if he’d been the one who ran her off the road. He swore he’d never do such a thing. He explained that he’d been concerned about her driving in the fog while she was distraught from their confrontation, so he’d followed her to make sure she’d be okay. The thought of anything happening to her terrified him – he knew she despised him, but that didn’t mean he didn’t love and care about her. He acknowledged he’d hurt her so deeply, and he couldn’t bear the thought of anything like that happening again.

Victoria questioned what Ashland was keeping from her. He changed the subject again, and she called him out on it. Ashland suggested Victoria was suspicious because he’d been dishonest in the past, but she said that she could finally tell when he was keeping the truth from him. She asked him to just tell her what happened. He begged her not to tax herself right now and to stay calm until she received medical attention. Victoria’s memory began to trickle back. She’d seen lights in front of her, and it couldn’t have been Ashland because he’d been following her.

Victoria grappled with the revelation that there had been another car. Ashland assured her that the accident wasn’t her fault. Victoria remembered being on the phone with her mom, on speaker, then she saw headlights come sliding into in her lane. Ashland confirmed this and said Victoria had to swerve to avoid the car. Victoria remembered she lost control of the car, and everything went black. She asked what happened next, and he filled in the blanks. According to Ashland, Victoria swerved out of the way of the oncoming car. Ashland had turned sharply to one side to try and avoid the other car, but he couldn’t get out of the way in time. This third car hit the side of Ashland’s car, while Victoria’s car hit a tree. Ashland then recapped the aftermath of the accident, which was shown earlier in the episode.

Victoria took Ashland’s injured hand and acknowledged he’d gotten burned saving her. “You actually risked your life to save mine.” Crying, Ashland said the last time this happened, he ran and left his best friend to die in a burning car. He couldn’t do that again – he’d had to do everything he could to save her. Victoria asked if the other driver was okay. He told her to rest and not to get upset about the other driver. Agitated, she told him to stop trying to protect her and answer the question.

When Ashland went to get Victoria’s phone earlier, he’d checked on the third car. It was in a ditch, and it was way more damaged than Ashland and Victoria’s vehicles. She asked about the driver. The other driver was killed. Victoria’s eyes filled with tears. She said that was awful. She repeated that all she’d seen were headlights. Ashland was sorry to report that Victoria knew the deceased driver – it was Rey.

Ashland: You can’t blame me for not trusting you.

Adam: I get it. But you are actually the one that has proven to be untrustworthy, okay? My family takes the greater risk by paying you first.

Ashland: We both have a lot at stake here.

Adam: Okay, okay, at this point, I don’t know — or frankly, I don’t care — what your motivations are, but I can tell you what ours are — we want you out. And my father has agreed that $500 million is more than a fair price to pay to achieve that. We have no reason to screw you over. And frankly, we don’t want to deal with whatever revenge plot you would concoct if we did. Because we know what you’re capable of. So, all you have to do is take the half-a-billion-dollar leap of faith, you sign the agreement, and we’ll wire the money. It’s non-negotiable.

Ashland came to Newman Locke to pick Victoria up after he signed the papers ceding control of the company and annulling their marriage. She bitterly revealed that she tricked him into thinking she’d leave town with him so that he’d sign everything away. She wanted out of the marriage and him out of the company. She said he prided himself on being one step ahead of everyone else, so she asked if he didn’t see this coming. He admitted he didn’t know what to think over the last few days, but when she said she’d said she’d run away with him to Tuscany, he was overjoyed, and he didn’t question it because he didn’t want to. He still thought they could make this work. He tried to hug her, but she shirked him off. “Everything I’ve said to you the past couple of days has been a lie. Not some grand fabrication that ‘I have cancer and I’m dying,’ but a lie nonetheless. And now you know you’ve been deceived. So all those feelings you might be having right now of betrayal and humiliation – I know them. I know them well. It’s your turn now,” Victoria said.

Victoria was insulted that Ashland thought she’d believe someone would go through the trouble of making it look like he’d faked a cancer diagnosis. She asked if he thought she was an idiot. He didn’t but he felt he had no choice but to tell her he’d been framed. He asked if she would’ve forgiven him if he’d come to her and said he made a terrible mistake and lied about having cancer. He never actually thought she’d believe in her head that he’d been set up, but he was hoping that she’d want to believe it in her heart. He’d been trying to stall things, because he thought that in time, their love would win out and that they could have a future. She was adamant that they’d never have a future after what he did. He still thought they could be together. She told him to stop lying. She said he didn’t get control of Newman Locke, but he could take comfort in having money and freedom. He didn’t care about the money or the freedom. All he wanted was Victoria.

Victoria told Ashland that he was very committed to his scam, playing the devoted husband all the way to the bitter end. Ashland swore he was sincere. Victoria wanted Ashland to admit to everything he’d done. She wanted to know how he could sink to such a disgusting low – pretending to have a devastating disease. She thought she deserved the truth. “Fine. Here it is. I lied about having cancer,” Ashland stated. Ashland said that wasn’t the whole story though. He didn’t come to town with his sights set on Newman Enterprises, but then he found out his wife was cheating on him and that his son wasn’t his. Victoria was appalled Ashland was using his son as an excuse. Ashland had been devastated and furious, then he saw an opportunity to do something bigger than he’d ever done before, and he set his sights on Victoria’s family’s company.

Victoria recalled that Ashland didn’t waste any time – he’d invited her to NY right after he found out about Harrison, then he told her about his cancer diagnosis while they were there. He said he had momentum, and he was moving forward, and it was so easy to sell the story that the scans taken after his heart attack showed signs of cancer. At the time, Victoria had been surprised Ashland would want her around just after he found out he had cancer, since they were basically strangers. Now, she knew he did it because it would create an instant bond and make her feel compassion toward him. She asked how he could let that sweet innocent little boy think he was dying. He had no defense, but he did what he could to keep Harrison out of it. She noted that this was why he didn’t fight Kyle taking Harrison to Italy. He said that was right. He admitted he took advantage of Victoria and worked an angle to win her love and trust. “Death? That was an angle?,” she asked. She said the merger was his ultimate power grab, and also the most selfish and disgusting move of his entire career. He agreed with all of this. He confessed that he’d even been proud of himself at the time, but then he unexpectedly fell in love with her.

Victoria didn’t think Ashland understood what love was. He gently grabbed her arms and told her that he did know what it was. He believed they could get past this. He’d never loved anyone as profoundly as he loved her. He said he’d be a lost man if he walked out that door without her. For the first time in his life, he didn’t now what to do next. She was unsympathetic. She told him he had every opportunity to come clean before tonight, but he’d just lied and lied. She thought that the only reason he came clean was because he’d been backed into a corner – that wasn’t love. She felt demoralized because he’d shown her who he was over and over again – he took his dead best friend’s identity, and he forged a letter to get his hands on his mentor’s fortune. She’d looked past his sins and believed in him because she’d wanted to think he’d changed because of her. “I have changed. I gave up my life’s work, Locke Communications Group. I did that to show you that I would do anything for you,” he said. She asked why she’d believe anything that came out of his mouth. She told him she didn’t care what happened to him anymore. He didn’t believe she stopped caring about him. Ashland knew he deserved Victoria’s scorn, outrage and hatred, but he thought deep down inside, she was as conflicted as she was. He asked her again to leave town and start over. She said she was starting over, but not with him. He said he was sorry, and he went to the door. Victoria turned away, and Ashland took one last look at her, then he left.

Sharon was at Crimson Lights when Rey came up behind her, wrapped his arms around her and kissed her neck. She teased him by pretending to think he was someone else, and telling him that her husband wouldn’t approve. She noticed he had a new jacket and complimented it. He thanked her for being okay with him going on the trip to Chicago. He knew it was a little weird for him to be taking a trip with another woman and her son. She didn’t think it was weird. She thought he was more excited than Connor. He said it was his first live hockey game. Connor and Chelsea came in. Connor said the best part of this trip was that Rey would be there, no offense to Chelsea. She didn’t mind. Connor and Rey got a table and chatted in anticipation of the game.

Chelsea went to Sharon, who was behind the counter, packing a bag of snacks for the trip, and thanked her for lending them Rey. She said it meant so much to Connor. Chelsea, Connor and Rey were going to spend the night in Chicago, since it’d be past Connor’s bedtime when the game ended. Sharon thought it made sense for it to be an overnight trip, since it got foggy this time of the year, and it might not be safe to drive late. She just wanted them to bring Rey home safe and sound. Chelsea assured Sharon that they would. Sharon said she could enjoy having the house to herself and watching the shows Rey didn’t get into.

Chelsea noted that Sharon was going above and beyond to help prepare them for the trip to Chicago. Chelsea sensed that Sharon wasn’t happy about this trip, but she was working hard to make it seem like she was. Sharon said of course she was okay with it. Rey already told Sharon how Chelsea had a business trip and asked him to take Connor to the game, but when her trip was postponed, she decided to go, and she got another ticket for Rey. Chelsea said Connor had his heart set on this. Sharon thought the trip would be good for Rey, since he liked Connor. Chelsea thought Sharon might have an issue with Rey and Chelsea spending time together, giving their history. Sharon asked if Chelsea meant the history between the two of them or the history between Chelsea and Rey – when she poisoned him. Chelsea meant all of it. Chelsea just wanted Sharon to be comfortable. Sharon thought she’d made it clear that the past was in the past. She knew Chelsea was doing much better. Chelsea said Sharon and Rey had been so kind and offered her friendship, even though she didn’t deserve it, and she wouldn’t forget that.

Over at their table, Rey asked Connor if he was too old to learn to play hockey, and Connor said of course not. Rey asked Connor to give him some hockey lessons when they got back.

Sharon was glad that she and Chelsea got along these days. She didn’t think they should go looking for problems when there were none. Connor reminded Chelsea it was time to leave, so she went over to the table. Rey hoped he caught a puck. Chelsea hoped he didn’t catch it with his teeth. Chelsea put her hand on Rey’s shoulder as she laughed at her joke. Sharon watched.

At Newman Media, Victor said Adam’s idea worked, and hopefully Ashland would be out of their lives soon. Adam thought the deal was a success because Victor backed him when Ashland came to Victor and asked if the offer was legitimate. Victor said he and Adam made a good team. Adam thought Victoria would be irritated that her plan didn’t work, because it meant she wouldn’t get the satisfaction of throwing Adam under the bus, even temporarily. Victor said there was no place for sibling rivalry right now. He thought that Adam should feel compassionate toward his sister, not competitive. Victor gave Adam credit for getting rid of Ashland, but Victor sensed Adam wanted more than that. Adam smiled. Victor thought Adam should just be happy Ashland was out of the company and out of Victoria’s life. Adam said Victor was right. He said he’d try to focus on staying positive. He was sure Victoria would move past this in time. He added that the brilliant part of his plan was that they got to keep control of Locke Communications – for a bargain of half a billion dollars.

Nikki and Nick arrived at Newman Media. Nick had been trying to reach Victoria, and she wasn’t answering. Victor revealed that Ashland took the deal. Nick congratulated Adam. Nikki stated that she’d been skeptical, but she acknowledged that Adam really came through. He said it was all about helping the family. Victor nodded approvingly. Victor assumed Victoria and Ashland were talking right now. Nikki mentioned that Victoria got Ashland to sign the papers by telling him they’d still be together in spite of the annulment. Nikki said Ashland was a terrible person, but Victoria’s feelings for him were real. Nick said Victoria was strong and proud, and she could handle herself. He was worried about Ashland. Victor asked why. Nick said they had to watch Ashland until he was gone for good. Victor had told his team to stop following Victoria and to start following Locke. Later, Victor received a report that Ashland left Newman Locke by himself.

Back at Newman Locke, Victoria turned a picture of her and Ashland face down. She took her portrait off the wall and slammed it onto a sharp paperweight until the canvas ripped, then she ran out the door. Later, Victor, Nikki, Nick and Adam showed up. Nikki was horrified when she saw the portrait, because she thought Ashland destroyed it in a fit of rage. Victor thought Victoria did it. Adam thought it made sense for Victoria to need to blow off steam. He felt the destruction of the portrait seemed like the work of someone in a lot of pain. Nick called security and checked on Victoria’s status. He learned that Victoria was last seen leaving the parking garage a few minutes ago. Nikki wanted to call Victoria, but Victor thought she needed some time alone. Nick suggested they all go get some food. Adam couldn’t go because he had something to do. He left. Nikki wondered what could’ve made Victoria ruin the portrait. Nick had something to do, but he said he’d meet his parents at Society. he told Nikki that he thought Victor was right – Victoria needed space. Nick left. Nikki just wanted to help.

Adam went back to his office. He called Sally and said he had great news – his plan worked. She asked about his job status. He said he didn’t ask if he could stay on as CEO of Newman Locke, because it didn’t seem like the right time. He planned to broach the subject with Victor later. He wanted to celebrate, and they agreed to meet at the hotel. Adam went to the suite and found champagne and a note from Sally saying to get comfortable. He poured himself a glass of champagne and toasted to a new beginning.

Back at Crimson Lights, Sharon asked Rey to call or text when he got to Chicago, so she’d know he was safe. He teased that he had Connor to protect him. He gave her a peck on the lips and started to leave, but she called him back and gave him a longer kiss. Chelsea looked uncomfortable. Sharon and Rey said they loved each other. As they prepared to leave, Chelsea made sure she had her ticket. Rey checked his pockets and realized his and Connor’s tickets were still in his old jacket. He’d go home and get them. Chelsea took Connor out to the patio to wait so they wouldn’t be in the way. After Rey left, Nick went to Crimson Lights and brought Sharon up to speed. While Nick gave Adam credit for stepping up for the family, he believed it would be very difficult to get Adam out of the CEO’s seat. He worried that the family may have exchanged one mess for another. Sharon hoped not.

Victoria was in her car, crying. It was foggy, and she was traveling at a good rate of speed. She used her car’s hands-free phone to call Nikki. Nikki answered and invited Victoria to Society. Victoria needed to be alone. She just wanted to let Nikki know she was okay. Nikki said things would work out. Victoria didn’t think things would ever be okay again. She loved Ashland, and he made a fool out of her. She’d almost left town with him tonight. Victoria was so distraught, a concerned Nikki told her to pull over on the side of the road, so her parents could come pick her up. Victoria was crying harder now. “I keep making the same mistakes with men,” she said. There were suddenly headlights from another car shining in Victoria’s face. She screamed and the car started to flip. Nikki kept calling Victoria’s name while Victor looked at her in alarm.

Chelsea and Sharon talk and Sharon assures Chelsea she is fine with Chelsea going with Rey with her and Connor to Chicago to watch a Black Hawks game and staying in Chicago overnight. Sharon gives Rey a long kiss goodbye and Rey tells Sharon he loves her. Rey realizes that he forgot the Black Hawk tickets and he tells them he will go home to pick them up and meet them at the coffee house for their trip to Chicago.

Victoria tells Ashland that she has been lying to him the past few days so he would sign the deal to take the money and get out of her life. Victoria demands that Ashland tell her the truth and he admits that he faked his cancer diagnosis in order to get control of Newman Enterprises. Ashland tells Victoria that he was surprised that he fell in love with her and he would give up everything to be with her. Victoria tells Ashland that she doesn’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth and she wants him to leave because she doesn’t care what happens to him anymore. Ashland leaves and Victoria breaks the painting of herself that Ashland gave her and leaves her office.

Victoria gets in her car and starts to cry then she calls Nikki to tell her she is all right. Victoria tells Nikki that she is driving her car but Nikki can hear Victoria is crying and upset so she asks Victoria to pull off the road and tell her where she is, so she and Victor can pick her up but Victoria refuses to do it and continues to drive her car until she loses control of the car and crashes. Nikki hears the noise and calls Victoria’s name several times but Victoria doesn’t answer her.

Adam: If they won’t budge on the price, then walk away. Right, right, right. Well, get on it.

Victor: Where do things stand with locke?

Adam: [ Exhales sharply ] Our conversation couldn’t have gone better. He agreed to surrender control of the company.

Victor: I’ll be damned. Hmm. What about victoria?

Adam: He agreed to the annulment and that he’s gonna walk away from newman/locke. He is actually on his way over here right now to sign the agreement.

Victor: Well, so the end is in sight.

Adam: Uh-huh. Money talks. Locke will soon be out of our lives, out of the company and victoria’s life, so it’s the best possible outcome.

Victor: I still don’t like the way you handled this whole thing. It was very impulsive. Could have backfired.

Adam: It worked, didn’t it? I achieved the objective.

Victor: You will have achieved the objective once he signs.

Adam: It was the cleanest, most straight-forward way to tackle the problem. No tricks, no games — it was just cold, hard cash in exchange to get this jerk to take a hike.

Victor: Hmm. So you want me to believe that you did this for the good of the family, just to show your loyalty, right?

Adam: That’s exactly why i did it.

Victor: I know why you did it. You wanted to prove that you were smarter and more capable than your sister.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] You’re really doing this?

Ashland: Adam is waiting for me in his office right now to sign the paperwork.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] It’s just — you know, it’s a little overwhelming how quickly it all went down.

Ashland: Yeah. Well, adam and your father gave me 500 million reasons to walk away. From our combined company, from our “official” marriage. As long as I have your assurance that you’re on board with me.

Victoria: Ashland, I told you —

Ashland: Tell me again. I need to know if you’re really willing and ready to walk away from everything you have here, from your family, from this company, from your home here in genoa city. And build a new future with me someplace far away.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] The farther away, the better, as far as I’m concerned. After everything that has happened, you know, I could just — I could really use a fresh start.

Ashland: Well, that brings me to the hardest question of all. What about your children?

Jack: That is wonderful news. No, absolutely. If anything changes, you give me a call. I love you too, son. Bye. That was kyle. Summer can’t get away from marchetti, but kyle managed to clear his schedule and he and harrison will be flying in next week.

Traci: So the clock is ticking.

Jack: Yeah, as excited as i am about their visit, I am also dreading what comes with it.

Traci: [ Sighs ] Diane and all of her endless drama.

Jack: I get to sit with my son and blind-side him with the news that his mother is alive.

[ Knock on door ]

Phyllis: Please don’t make me play this game with you, “taylor.” Let me in. I have a master key. Please don’t make me use it.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

[ Exhales sharply ] Phyllis, wow, what a surprise.

Phyllis: Stop. Seriously? You didn’t think I was gonna figure out your alias when you checked in to my hotel? Hi, I’m karen.

Ashland: It’s because I love you so much that I’m asking you this question now. If you’re really ready to cut ties with everyone…I don’t want you to have any regrets. We both have to be sure about what that means. For instance, I would love to take a more active role in harrison’s life, but I know the newmans and the abbotts would join forces to keep me from doing that in the same way you need to think about billy.

Victoria: What about billy?

Ashland: It’s clear, isn’t it? He’s gonna hate the fact that you’re running away with me. And I’m pretty sure he’s gonna try to keep you from his kids.

Victoria: You know, I have been thinking about the impact that this would have on the children, and I actually think that I can — I can — I can reason with billy. I mean [Sighs] He’s not going to keep johnny and katie away from their mother.

Ashland: Are you sure about that?

Victoria: When it comes to determining what is best for the kids, I know that billy usually does the right thing. And depending on where we end up living, we’ll just have to come up with some kind of an arrangement.

Ashland: I’m not sure that’s going to be possible.

Victoria: Why would you say it like that?

Ashland: Because your ex can be vindictive. He’s proved it over and over again.

Victoria: Oh. I know, but…billy is a totally different person now. As ironic as that sounds, as much as he’ll hate to see me doing this with you, I think he’ll take great satisfaction in me finally walking away from my father. He despises him more than anyone, even adam. You’re not even a close third when it comes to the two.

Ashland: Are you really willing to take that risk?

Traci: Jack, I am so sorry you’ve been put in this position.

Jack: Oh, thanks. So am I.

Traci: But you’re doing the right thing. Kyle has to know the truth, and better it come from you where you can at least sort of prepare him. Although, god, how do you prepare a kid to learn that his mother skipped town to save her own skin and let him and everybody else believe she was dead?

Jack: Yeah, I don’t think we can count on diane to show much finesse. She’s been so callous about kyle’s emotions ever since her “death.”

Traci: Okay, I’ve been thinking a lot about the timing on this, jack. Why reveal herself now?

Jack: Oh, there is a reason, rest assured. Diane has a plan. And I am going to make it my life’s mission to figure out exactly what it is.

Diane: Your hotel? My, my, how things do change.

Phyllis: Stop the act. You know this is my hotel. You know that. That’s why you made a beeline for it when you landed.

Diane: You’re right. I won’t insult your intelligence that way. What I mean is it would be a pointless lie since I know very well what you’ve been up to since I’ve been away.

Phyllis: Oh, do you?

Diane: Mm-hmm.

Phyllis: Oh, is that so?

Diane: I’ve followed the lives of a lot of people in genoa city, not just jack and kyle.

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness, listen to you. And I’m on the short list. I’m so lucky.

Diane: You’re running with the big dogs now.

[ Chuckles ] Congratulations, phyllis. It’s a beautiful hotel. And you fought hard to make this a success. Your success. You know, I’m really quite impressed given —

Phyllis: Okay, cut. Cut the act.& Alright, did you follow me and jack from la? Is that what you did?

Diane: Don’t be absurd.

Phyllis: Do you have any idea the hell that’s gonna rain down on you if anyone knows you’re here, diane?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I just — I just wanted to be here, prepared, for once jack tells kyle that I’m alive.

Phyllis: Prepare for what? What are you preparing for?

[ Chuckles ] Honestly, how do you see this playing out? For copd,

Diane: I’ve played it out in my head so many times, you know, seeing kyle again, being reunited with my son.

Phyllis: Okay, well, don’t bet on that happening, and don’t get too comfortable here if you know what’s good for you.

Diane: Is that a threat?

Phyllis: No, just advice. Listen, jack’s hoping — I’m betting — that when kyle finds out that you’re actually not dead, he’s not gonna want to have anything to do with you.

Diane: Gee, thanks.

Phyllis: I think you wasted a trip, diane. Sorry. But on the off chance kyle wants to meet with you, I’m gonna have to ask you not to do that in my hotel. I don’t want the fireworks here. Can you just check in to the athletic club, please?

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Are you throwing me out?

Phyllis: Nothing I would like to do more than to throw you out, that’s for sure.

Diane: Oh, then what’s stopping you?

Phyllis: You know what’s stopping me? If I throw you out, then you get to play the victim, and I’m not gonna let you do that this time. You know what I’m gonna do instead? I’m gonna take your money and I’m gonna ignore you, diane.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Wow. Wow, you really have a knack for this hospitality thing. No — no, really, phyllis, it’s a gift.

Phyllis: If you create any trouble, I’m throwing you out on your butt.

Diane: Fair enough. But you don’t need to worry. I’ll behave.

Phyllis: I hope so.

Diane: Phyllis [Scoffs] I know it’s going to be very hard for you to accept that I’ve changed.

Phyllis: Oh, please, diane. I know you. You haven’t changed. I’m gonna give you a piece of advice. If people in this town that you’re actually alive and that you had the audacity to come back here, it’s not me you should be worried about. Things will get ugly in a real hurry.

Adam: I’m sorry that you think that of me. That I was purely acting out of selfishness.

Victor: Son, you said in so many words that you thought this was victoria’s fault. That she fell for a con man, therefore she should be stripped of her title. In favor of you.

Adam: Do I think that I’m a better leader than victoria? Hell yes. Because it happens to be true. But the approach that I took with ashland, it wasn’t about proving it to you or to anyone else.

Victor: So you weren’t out to impress me.

Adam: Well, to the extent that you were impressed, that pleases me. Yeah, I won’t deny it. I solved a problem that threatened everything that you have built your entire life. But the goal was to get ashland out, and it benefited the whole family. So whatever happens moving forward, I think we’re all better off for it, myself included. I’d say that’s a win all around.

Victor: I remember when you were a little boy on the farm in kansas. I taught you how to play soccer. Look at you now. You do impress me. But you’ve cost me a hell of a lot of money.

Adam: Well, it’s money, um, well spent. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s finalize this. Until we get ashland’s signature on the agreement, um, I don’t want anything to get messed up, since we’re this close to getting rid of that bastard.

Victor: I’m proud of you.

Victoria: Since the moment we got together, billy has been meddling in our lives. He’s been digging into your past, almost to the point of obsession, and bringing gaines to tuscany to stop our wedding.

Ashland: But see, that’s exactly why I think he’s gonna be so hard on you. He will see the two of us choosing to run away together as proof that he was right to oppose our marriage.

Victoria: I actually think that it will be the opposite. Look, you said that you thought billy was still in love with me secretly and that that was his motivation, but you’re so wrong about that. Billy just doesn’t want to see me hurt again the way that he hurt me, and he wants to see me with some peace in my life. The kind of peace that he was never able to give me. I know it’s not gonna be easy for him to admit, but when he looks into my eyes, the way that you’re looking into them right now, he’s gonna see how much i love you. I love you so much, even after everything that’s happened. And…he’s not gonna be able to fight that.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] So this really is a yes.

Victoria: I’m ready.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] Okay. Okay, the world is ours. Where do you want to go?

[ Chuckles ]

Victoria: Tuscany.

Ashland: Of course.

Victoria: I mean, we own the palazzo.

Ashland: Yeah.

Victoria: It’s just so magical there. We had so many beautiful memories there.

Ashland: Okay. Tuscany it is.

Victoria: So go on, go take care of things with adam. I’ll be waiting here for you.

Ashland: Okay. And when I get back, we will start our new life together.

Diane: Thank you for reminding me how hated I am in this town.

Diane: [ Huffs ] For the record, it’s incredibly difficult for me being back here.

Phyllis: Oh, come on, diane, please. When have you cared about what anyone thinks of you? I am actually interested in one thing.

Diane: What?

Phyllis: How’d you survive after all these years? I mean, you took on an alias and invested in therapy apparently. But how’d you pay your bills?

Diane: Well, uh, once I felt steady enough to venture out again, that I was confident my escape plan had worked, that nobody was going to come looking for me…

Jack: I have been doing some investigating into “taylor jenson’s” life in los angeles over the past few years, trying to come up with clues, something that’s gonna lead me to what diane is after.

Traci: And what did you find?

Jack: For starters, she tried to resume her career…

Diane: As an architect. But it was more competitive and difficult in los angeles. I couldn’t draw on the success of diane jenkins.

Phyllis: That’s one of the downfalls of faking your own death.

Diane: Well, my savings started to dwindle, and I was forced to take whatever job i could find. I — I started working in a real-estate office and answered phones, and pretty soon i learned the ropes and I got my realtor’s license.

Phyllis: It’s hard to picture you hustling, like the rest of us mortals. Even if it was in beverly hills.

Diane: It wasn’t as glamorous as one might think.

Phyllis: Oh, was it not?

Diane: No, I didn’t sell mansions to celebrities. It was small, postwar valley homes.

Jack: Taylor jenson had a modestly successful career as a residential real-estate agent. Hardly the life that diane was accustomed to.

Traci: Well, I suppose if you’re technically dead, it’s best to keep a low profile.

Jack: Yeah, when you’re keeping an eye on all the dollars, it kind of wears on someone as grasping and entitled as diane. My biggest worry right now is she’s gonna try to convince kyle to support her.

Traci: Well, that wouldn’t surprise me a bit. But either way, it’s gonna be kyle’s decision.

Diane: I kept my head down and made an honest living, and little by little, year by year, I made a life for myself in california.

Phyllis: Planning and plotting for the day when you could come back to genoa city and explode into our life again. Wreaking havoc on jack and everyone around him.

Diane: Phyllis —

Phyllis: I’m calling it like I see it. And then keemo’s house went on the market after he died, and you made a beeline for it because you found out that the owner was jack’s granddaughter allie, and you took advantage of a young woman grieving the loss of her father and you misrepresented yourself as a lovely woman…just there to hold her hand, right? Capitalizing on her grief and confusion.

Diane: Just stop. That is not how it happened. You’re just twisting everything around.

Phyllis: Am I? Am I really? See, I know who you are, and i don’t trust a word that comes out of your mouth, diane. And nothing you say or do is ever gonna change that.

Traci: So I guess we just focus on the positive — kyle will be coming to genoa city to spend some time, and he’s bringing that adorable harrison. I’m sure you’re excited about that, right?

Jack: Yes, I am, and I am hoping to convince allie to come out while they’re here. It seems like the perfect opportunity to meet her whole new family.

Traci: Jack, are you sure that’s a good idea?

Victor: Hello, ashland.

Adam: We’ve been expecting you.

Ashland: Hmm. Well, I don’t want to spend any more time here with you than I’m sure you want to spend with me, so let’s get to it, yes.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Here’s the document. Pretty straightforward. You sign on page three. Which states for $500 million us, you agree to relinquish all ownership and control of newman/locke as well as agree to an annulment of your marriage to victoria.

Ashland: As if I never existed. But then that is the goal, isn’t it? To erase me from newman/locke and from victoria’s life.

Victor: Once you sign, we’ll transfer the funds.

Ashland: Hmm. Two unreadable faces. Well done, gentlemen. But I know that inside both of you must be salivating right now. Scarcely able to believe that i would make it this easy for you. Better skin from your body wash?

Jack: Why wouldn’t I want to invite allie here while kyle and harrison are visiting from milan? That never happens. She gets to meet you, ashley, billy.

Traci: Naturally, you want your granddaughter to meet her new family as soon as possible. I’m your biggest supporter. I support that wholeheartedly, jack.

Jack: Yeah, you lobbied for it the last time we talked.

Traci: But that was before i knew about diane. And do you really think that you can welcome her —

Jack: Allie has met diane, and she has been appropriately warned.

Traci: But that doesn’t mean it’s gonna go smoothly. Or that the explosion is gonna be short-lived. Ah. If the goal is to ease allie into the meeting her new family for the first time, do you really think that it’s such a good idea to bring her into such a volatile mix?

Jack: You’re right. You’re right. Telling kyle the news about diane is enough.

[ Doorbell rings ] I’ll get it. Hey.

Phyllis: Sorry I didn’t call first.

Jack: That’s okay. What’s wrong?

Phyllis: You want the bad news or the worse news?

Jack: Um, whatever the news is, tell me.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Diane is here in genoa city. Staying at my hotel.

Adam: I’m sure you’ll find everything in order. The agreement exactly as we discussed. As my father, we are prepared to do our part immediately after you sign.

Victor: $500 million to the account you specified.

Ashland: Okay.

[ Clears throat ] Initial page one. Sign page three.

Victor: Alright, it’s done. The money has been transferred. You’re out of our lives.

Ashland: Don’t assume you’re speaking for your entire family, victor. Your daughter —

Victor: Spare me.

Nikki: Is it a bad time?

Victoria: No.

[ Sighs ] I mean, yes, but…I’m glad you’re here. Maybe you can help calm me down.

Nikki: I hear that ashland has agreed to adam’s plan to pay him off.

Victoria: From dad, I assume.

Nikki: Is it true?

Victoria: Yes. But he has one condition.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] What is the condition?

Victoria: Once ashland signs away control of the company and gets the money, he wants me to break all ties with the family and go away with him.

Nikki: What?!

Victoria: He’ll agree to the annulment, mother, if — if i stay with him.

Nikki: Well, you didn’t agree to that, did you?

Victoria: Well, of course i did. What other way was I going to get him out of newman and out of our family’s lives? It’s what you all wanted, wasn’t it?

Nikki: What do you want? That was just a ploy on your part, right?

Victoria: Right now ashland is signing away his entire life. Everything that he’s built, everything that…that we’ve built.

Nikki: Honey, you don’t owe him anything. Not after all of his lies and the way he used you. There is nothing binding you to that agreement. It was just words. Unless… please don’t tell me you want to stay with him.

Jack: This is just the kind of stunt diane would pull — showing up incognito so that when kyle arrives, she can pounce on him for god knows what reason.

Phyllis: Well, whatever the reason is, we are not gonna like it.

Jack: How did she seem?

Phyllis: I don’t know. She went on and on about how she was trying to rebuild her life in the last 10 years, and she wants to mend fences with her son.

Jack: Yeah, sticking to her story like the skilled liar she is.

Phyllis: You know, I said a couple things to her, started baiting her, see if she would lash out at me. She didn’t go there.

Jack: So you believed her?

Phyllis: Well, she was convincing. She puts on one of the best sincere acts I’ve ever seen.

Jack: Wait, then you’re buying it.

Phyllis: No. Not for a minute.

Jack: I don’t like that she’s even close. I heard from kyle that he and harrison are coming in soon.

Phyllis: Yeah, summer called me on my way over here.

Jack: So how do I keep diane away from kyle before I can talk to him?

Phyllis: You don’t have to worry about that. I’ll do that for you. That’s what I’m for. I mean, you have enough on your plate, telling kyle the truth and how he’s gonna react when he finds out that his mother’s still alive.

Jack: I want you to know i appreciate you dropping everything and trying to help me through all this. I mean it, you have consistently been there for me.

Phyllis: I’m happy to do it. I really am. Just so you know, I’m also protecting my daughter, ’cause whatever happens to kyle affects her. So not only am I in “best friend” mode, but I’m in “mama bear” mode. And make no mistake, this is personal for me.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Hmm. “The business world is speculating about recent moves at newman/locke, where chairman emeritus victor newman has abruptly installed his son, adam newman, as temporary ceo.”

[ Chuckles ] Victor’s at it again. Pulling strings, keeping everyone guessing. “Adam newman seen at society with his recently-appointed coo, sally spectra, appearing to mix pleasure with business. Future power couple in the making?”

[ Chuckles ] “Nikki newman to chair arts foundation gala for 10th consecutive year. Her organizational talent par excellence, tireless dedication to worthy causes –” blah, blah, blah, blah. “Mrs. Newman is a bright light in our community, and a powerful voice. A force to be reckoned with.”

[ Sighs ]

Nikki: I’ve been so worried about you, being under all this pressure. And I-I know your feelings for ashland are still strong. Despite everything he’s done, he still has a hold on your heart.

Victoria: Mom, I know. I know I shouldn’t be so confused and conflicted. But [Sighs] God help me, I am. And you’re right, this has been really, really hard. All of the pretending and lying to his face and the hate that I feel for him for what he’s done to me and the family. While at the same time…I feel like I’m grieving the loss of — of my marriage and — and the man that I thought was my soulmate.

Nikki: Well…you must have put on the performance of a lifetime to get him to agree to this deal.

Victoria: Do you know why i was able to pull it off, mom? Because…those feelings are still there for me to draw from. And even though I’ve slowly been putting the screws to him… I just have reconciled it at all in my heart or in my mind. After everything that ashland and I have been through and everything that we’ve shared, I mean, ashland’s love for me, it just — it seemed so powerful and real. I mean, could it have all been fake this whole time?

Nikki: Yes, because he is a sociopath. He knows all the right words to say, put on the perfect act, while feeling nothing except for some sick satisfaction that he was able to dupe us. Darling, don’t be ashamed that you thought it was genuine. We all did. This isn’t your fault. Do you understand, baby? It’s not your fault.

Victoria: I know that, mom. I’m not blaming myself. I just don’t know what to do with all of this love that i have in my heart.

[ Voice breaking ] Where does it go?

[ Sobbing ]

Nikki: In time, it will fade. And then you will heal. And you have your entire family to help you, baby, don’t worry. I know.

Victor: You wanted to be treated as an equal — a man worthy of having his name side-by-side with mine. But you couldn’t do it through grit and hard work. You did it by taking advantage of my daughter’s feelings and by taking advantage of this family’s generosity, by claiming to be terminally ill. That, my man, is sick.

Ashland: You may find this hard to believe, victor [Sighs] But I still admire the hell out of you. I really do. Your devotion to your family. Your commitment to your empire. You’re a shining example for all of us.

Adam: Look, now that everything’s finalized, you should — you should leave.

Ashland: One more thing. My love for your daughter has not changed, even in this moment. She is a remarkable woman, an independent woman, and no matter what, you should be proud of her.

Victor: Get him the hell out of here.

Adam: [ Sighs ] We hit the bike trails every weekend

Kyle and Harrison would be in Genoa City next week. Jack wanted to invite Allie out next week, but Traci convinced him that it wasn’t the right time, because the family would be dealing with the fallout over Diane’s return during that time. Phyllis found out Diane was at the Grand Phoenix and confronted her. Diane revealed that she’d been keeping tabs on the lives of several people in Genoa City. Phyllis baited Diane, but couldn’t get her to blow up. Phyllis went to Jack with the news that Diane was in town. Phyllis said Diane appeared to be sincere, but Phyllis didn’t buy it. Jack sensed Diane had some ulterior motive, and he was determined to find out what it was. Diane read news articles on Nikki, Victor and Adam and Sally. Diane wondered to herself if it was a mistake to come here and if she’d be able to pull something off. Jack went to Diane’s suite.

Victor admitted he was proud of Adam for getting Ashland out of their lives. Victoria tricked Ashland into believing she’d run away with him to Tuscany where they’d start a new life together. Ashland met with Adam and Victor and signed the paperwork relinquishing his claim on Newman Locke and annulling his marriage to Victoria. In exchange, Victor transferred half a billion dollars into Ashland’s bank account. Victoria told Nikki she hated Ashland, but she still had feelings for him. Victoria wondered if Ashland had really lied about loving her. Nikki said yes, because he was a sociopath. When Ashland returned to get Victoria, she informed him that they were finished.

Adam walked into his office on a business call, which he ended when he saw Victor waiting for him. Victor wanted an update on Locke. Adam said it was the best possible outcome – Ashland agreed to surrender control of Newman Locke and to annul his marriage to Victoria. Adam was clearly pleased his plan worked, but Victor still didn’t approve, because Adam’s plan was impulsive, and it could’ve backfired. Adam said it worked, and he achieved the objective. Victor clarified that the objective wouldn’t be achieved until Ashland signed. Adam thought he’d found the cleanest way to handle to problem. Adam claimed he did this for the good of the family, but Victor was convinced Adam did this to prove he was smarter and more capable than his sister.

Adam was sorry Victor thought that of him. Victor noted that Adam had said this was Victoria’s fault and that she deserved to be stripped of her title for getting conned. There was no doubt in Adam’s mind that he was a better leader than Victoria, but he didn’t take this approach with Ashland to prove that to Victor or anyone else. “So you weren’t out to impress me?” Victor asked. Adam admitted he was pleased Victor was impressed, but Adam’s goal was to get Ashland out, and that benefited the whole family. Victor remembered teaching Adam to play soccer when he was a little boy in Kansas. He marveled at how far Adam had come. Victor was impressed with Adam, but he said Adam cost him a hell of a lot of money. Adam thought it was money well-spent. Adam wanted to focus on getting Ashland to sign the agreement for now. Victor was proud of Adam.

At Newman Locke, Ashland and Victoria released each other from a hug. He recapped the story – he was going to get $500,000,000 from Adam and Victor in exchange for walking away from the company and ending the official marriage with Victoria. He was only willing to sign this agreement if Victoria would leave this company, her family and this city and build a future with him somewhere far away. Victoria assured Ashland that she did want to go with him, and as far away from Genoa City as possible. He asked what about Johnny and Katie.

Ashland explained that he was asking Victoria this question because he loved her so much. He’d love to take a more active role in Harrison’s life, but he knew the Newmans and Abbotts would join forces to keep him from doing that. He thought she needed to think about Billy. Victoria didn’t think Billy would try to keep her from the kids. She said they’d have to come up with a custody arrangement. He wasn’t sure that was going to be possible, because Billy could be vindictive. Victoria said Billy changed, and as much as he’d hate to see her leave with Ashland, he’d take great satisfaction in seeing her walk away from her father. She said Billy despised Victor more than Adam or Ashland.

Victoria said Billy dug into their lives and tried to stop the wedding. Ashland thought Billy would be hard on Victoria if she ran away with Ashland. Victoria noted that Ashland once thought Billy was secretly in love with her. Victoria said Ashland was wrong about that – Billy just wanted her to be happy and have the peace he was never able to give her. Victoria said when Billy looked into her eyes, she’d see how much she loved Ashland, and he wouldn’t be able to fight that. Ashland believed Victoria sincerely wanted to leave with him, and he excitedly asked where she wanted to go. She said they’d go to the Palazzo in Tuscany. He kissed her and went to sign the paperwork. Once he was out the door, she scowled.

Ashland arrived at Newman Media. Ashland restated the terms – Ashland had to sign over all rights to Newman Locke and annul his marriage. Ashland said it’d be like he never existed. Ashland couldn’t read Victor and Adam’s faces, but he knew they had to be salivating, scarcely able to believe Ashland was making it this easy for them. Victor held up his phone showing that he was ready to transfer the money. Ashland signed the paperwork, Victor sent him the half billion dollars and said he was out of their lives. Ashland told Victor not to assume he was speaking for all the Newmans. “Your daughter,” Ashland started. Victor cut him off. He didn’t want to hear it.

Victor said that Ashland wanted to be treated as an equal – someone who was worthy of having his name beside Victor’s, but he couldn’t do it through hard work, he did it by taking advantage of Victoria’s feelings and of the family’s generosity by pretending to be terminally ill. It was sick. Ashland still admired Victor’s devotion to his family and commitment to his empire. Adam told Ashland to leave. Ashland said he still loved Victoria, and no matter what, Victor should be proud of her. Victor told Adam to get Ashland out of her. Adam walked Ashland to the door. Adam was glad Victor got to get that off his chest, but he thought they should stop wasting time thinking about Ashland. This was finished, and they won. Victor smiled.

Nikki went to Victoria’s office. Victoria said that Ashland only signed the paperwork under the condition that she went away with him. Nikki hoped Victoria didn’t agree to that. Victoria said of course she did, what other way was there to get Ashland out of Newman and out of all their lives, like the Newmans wanted? Nikki asked Victoria what she wanted. Victoria wistfully said Ashland was signing away everything he built -everything they both built. Nikki said that after everything Ashland had done to Victoria, there was nothing binding her to that agreement. Nikki worried Victoria wanted to stay with Ashland. She knew Victoria still had feelings for Ashland. Victoria knew she shouldn’t be so conflicted, but she was. It was very hard – all the pretending and lying to Ashland, and the hate she felt for him for what he’d done to her and the family. At the same time, she felt like she was grieving the loss of her marriage and the man she’d thought was her soulmate. Nikki said Victoria must’ve been able to put on the performance of a lifetime to get Ashalnd to agree to the deal. Victoria said that she was able to pull it off because she still had feelings for him, and even though she’d slowly been tricking him, she still hadn’t reconciled it in her heart. The love Ashland had seemed powerful and real. She asked if it had really been fake the whole time. “Yes, because he is a sociopath. He knows all the right words to say. Put on the perfect act while feeling nothing except for some sick satisfaction that he was able to dupe us,” Nikki said. Nikki didn’t want Victoria to feel ashamed, because they were all fooled. Victoria didn’t blame herself, but she wasn’t sure what to do with the love she had for Ashland. She began to sob. Nikki said that love would fade, and Victoria would heal, and the entire family would help. Nikki held Victoria.

Later, Victoria was alone in her office. Victor texted that Ashland signed the papers. “The company is safe. You’re free.” Victoria was staring out the window, when Ashland came to get her. He was enthusiastic because he thought they were leaving for their new journey. Victoria whipped around and glared at Ashland. “Did you really think that I would run away with you after everything that you put me through? Did you really think that this wasn’t the absolute end for us?,” she snapped.

At his home, Jack wrapped up a call with Kyle. He then relayed the news to Traci. Summer couldn’t get off work, but Kyle and Harrison would be here next week. Jack was excited for the visit, but dreading having to blindside Kyle with the news that his mother was alive. Traci was sorry Jack was put in this position, but she thought he was doing the right thing. She wasn’t sure how to prepare a kid for the news that his mother skipped town and let everyone think she died. He said he couldn’t count on Diane to show much finesse, since she’d been so callous about Kyle’s emotion ever since her “death.” Traci wondered why Diane was revealing herself now. He wasn’t sure, but he was confident that Diane had some sort of larger plan, and he was going to make it his life’s mission to find out what it was.

Diane was unpacking her things in the suite at the Grand Phoenix. Phyllis knocked on the door and told “Taylor” to open up, or she’d use the master key. Sighing, Diane opened the door and pretended to be surprised to see Phyllis. Phyllis said to stop. “Seriously? You didn’t think I was gonna figure out your alias when you checked into my hotel?,” Phyllis said. Diane acted surprised Phyllis owned the hotel. Phyllis didn’t buy it. She thought Diane specifically chose to stay at the Grand Phoenix because she knew Phyllis owned it. Diane admitted that she’d been keeping tabs on Phyllis, Jack, Kyle and several other denizens of Genoa City. Diane congratulated Phyllis on the beautiful hotel. She knew Phyllis fought hard to make The Grand Phoenix a success.

Phyllis asked if Diane had any idea the hell that was going to rain down on her if anyone found out she was in town. Diane just wanted to be here and prepared for once Jack told Kyle she was alive. Phyllis asked what Diane was preparing for. Diane had been picturing the reunion with her son. Phyllis said not to bet on that happening. Phyllis was predicting, and Jack was hoping that Kyle wouldn’t want to have anything to do with Diane. Phyllis thought Diane wasted the trip, but on the off chance that Kyle wanted to meet Diane, Phyllis didn’t want the fireworks of a reunion happening at her hotel, so she told Diane to go stay at the Athletic Club. Diane asked if Phyllis was throwing her out. Phyllis wasn’t doing that because she wasn’t going to give Diane the satisfaction of playing the victim. Phyllis said she was going to take Diane’s money and ignore her. Diane sarcastically congratulated Phyllis on her hospitality.

Phyllis said she’d throw Diane out if she caused any trouble. Diane promised to behave. She knew it was hard for Phyllis to accept she’d changed. “I know you. You haven’t changed,” Phyllis replied. Phyllis said she wasn’t the one Diane should be worried about, because things would ugly if people found out Diane was alive and back in town. “Thank you for reminding me how hated I am in this town,” Diane said. “No charge,” Phyllis replied. Diane stated that it was hard for her to be back here. Phyllis asked when Diane started caring what anyone thought of her. Phyllis wanted to know how Diane survived all these years. As Diane told her story, Jack was telling Traci the same details. He’d had someone do some investigating into “Taylor Jensen’s” life.

Diane had tried to resume her career as an architect, without success. It was more competitive in LA, and she couldn’t draw on her success as Diane Jenkins. “That’s one of the downfalls of faking your own death,” Phyllis replied. Diane was forced to take any job she could find, as her savings dwindled. She started out answering calls at a Realtor’s office, then she worked her way up and got her real estate license. It was hard to picture Diane hustling like the rest of the mortals, even if it was in Beverly Hills. Diane said it wasn’t glamorous – she sold small postwar valley homes, not mansions.

Jack told Traci that Diane had a modestly successful career, hardly the life Diane was accustomed to. Traci thought it made sense for someone faking their death to keep a low profile. He assumed that the lack of cash wore on someone as grasping and entitled as Diane. He was worried Diane would try and convince Kyle to support her. Traci said it would be Kyle’s decision.

Traci thought they should focus on the positive – Kyle would be back, and he was bringing the adorable Harrison. Jack was hoping to convince Allie to come out too, since this seemed to be the perfect time to introduce her to the whole family. Traci asked if that was the best idea, now that Diane was involved. Jack said Allie knew about Diane, and she’d been warned. Traci thought that explosions were likely to take place once Kyle found out about Diane. Traci suggested that it be best to gently ease Allie into meeting the family when things were calm, not invite her into a volatile situation. Jack realized Traci was right – telling Kyle the news about Diane was enough for right now.

Diane made an honest living and slowly made a life for herself in California. Phyllis thought Diane had bided her time until she could explode into their lives again, wreaking havoc on Jack and everyone around him. Phyllis said that when Keemo’s house went on the market, Diane made a beeline for it, and she took advantage of a grieving young woman who’d lost her father. Diane ordered Phyllis to stop twisting everything around. Phyllis said she knew Diane and she’d never trust her.

Later, Phyllis went to Jack and told him that Diane was in Genoa City. Jack was frustrated, but not surprised by Diane’s stunt. He said she was planning to pounce on Kyle for God knows what reason. He asked how Diane seemed. Phyllis said that Diane was saying she wanted to reconnect with her son. “Sticking to her story like the skilled liar she is,” Jack grumbled. Phyllis said she baited Diane to get her to lash out, and she didn’t. Phyllis said Diane put on one of the best sincere acts she’d ever seen. Jack asked if Phyllis was buying it, and she said not for a minute. “How do I keep Diane away from Kyle before I can talk to him?,” Jack wondered. Phyllis said she’d handle that. She thought he had enough on his plate telling Kyle the truth. He appreciated the way she’d consistently been there for him. She was happy to do it. She added that she was also protecting her daughter, because whatever happened to Kyle affected Summer. Not only was Phyllis in best friend mode, she was in Mama-bear mode, and this was personal for her.

Back in her suite, Diane read an article about Victor abruptly installing Adam as temporary CEO. She chuckled and said Victor was at it again, pulling strings and keeping everyone guessing. The article had a picture of Adam and Sally and speculated that they were a future power couple in the making. Diane read about Nikki’s charitable endeavors and it called her a powerful voice in the community. “A force to be reckoned with,” Diane said, sighing.

“Was coming here a mistake? Can I really pull this off? If I – if I reconnect with Kyle and it goes well, then what?,” Diane asked herself. There was a knock on the door, and she grumbled about Phyllis not leaving her alone. She answered and found Jack.

Ashland: I know it sounds mad. Just hear me out. We can start over. Like we talked about. And thanks to adam, ironically, we will have all the capital we need to start our next venture.

Victoria: You don’t understand —

Ashland: I do understand. Think about the life we could have. No suspicions. No judgment. No family rivalries. Just the two of us…and this crazy, perfect love that we have found together. You want that…every bit as much as I do. Don’t you?

Adam: Well, you made the right choice, locke, by accepting my offer. And just in time — the deadline was almost up.

Ashland: You have a bad habit of getting ahead of yourself. I have some terms and conditions.

Adam: Well, you’re not in a place to negotiate. When I said you were making the right choice, I meant the only choice that is available to you. And after what you’ve done, you need to accept this deal or you need to suffer the consequences.

Ashland: And what consequences would those be?

Adam: My family will destroy you and your reputation in a way that you can’t come back from. So I will be the one presenting the terms.

Mariah: So we have one goal for today, one singular mission, and that is to find inspiration for our wedding outfits.

Tessa: Well, when I called her, our fabulous designer chelsea, she gave me a list of thrift stores that we could go to and check out. She told me that we should try on, like, a bunch of different things so that we can bring some examples of things that we like — different colors, fabrics, styles.

Mariah: Colors? I mean, what are we thinking?

Tessa: I don’t know, white?Ou thinking?

Mariah: Yeah. I mean, we should have a few nods to tradition, right?

Tessa: Matching white jumpsuits?

Mariah: Well, I think that matching couples’ outfits are more of a halloween tradition, less of a wedding tradition.

Tessa: Alright, wise guy. But we’re still doing ’70s glam?

Mariah: You are correct.

Tessa: So keep an open mind.

Mariah: Oh, I’m open to anything and everything, so let’s go find our dream outfits.

Sally: Getting takeout before a work session, too?

Lily: Yeah.

Sally: Being in the c suite means a lot more meals at your desk, am I right?

Lily: Uh, I guess it does.

Sally: Listen, I don’t blame you for giving me the cold shoulder. What I did with the wig and the disguise and keeping an eye on billy, it was…questionable. But I’m hoping that we can get past it.

[ Chuckles ] Is that what you call it?

Sally: What would you call it?

Lily: Uh, I don’t know, um, stalking, entrapment. Should I go on?

Billy: [ Sighs ] Just talk. Say it. Say anything. Can’t be that hard. Just say what’s on your mind. Of course, you can’t say that. Probably can’t say that either.

[ Sighs ] Or maybe you should talk about that.

[ Sighs ]

Nick: Hey, billy. What’s up?

Billy: Hey, listen, I can’t stop thinking about victoria and worrying whether she’s gonna let ashland get through to her with all his manipulations again. So I’m thinking I need to talk to her one last time and try to get her to see the light. What do you think?

Nick: No, don’t do that, alright? Stay out of it. It’s complicated enough.

Billy: Why do you say that?

Nick: Just let the family handle it, okay? We’re working on a way to get ashland out of our lives.

Billy: And what is it?

Nick: I promise you, I will fill you in at some point, but trust me when I say this — I have no intention of letting ashland get away with what he’s done to my sister.

Lily: Look, I know that victoria is in a terrible position and that it’s stirring up these protective feelings in you again. Victoria: Thank you again so much for this incredible gift. Hanging in that place and what that means to me. How significant that is to me.

Ashland: I wanted to commemorate the merging of our companies and give you something special for our wedding. To me…that portrait represents a new beginning for both of us.

[ Knock on door ]

Nick: Can we talk?

Victoria: Now what?

Nick: I heard from mom. She said that adam went to ashland, offered him a whole lot of money to walk away from newman/locke. Is that true? Is ashland considering taking that deal?

Ashland: Okay. Let’s get down to brass tacks, then. What exactly do you and victor expect in return for this “generous” offer?

Adam: It’s clear and simple. You sign a legal agreement relinquishing all control of newman/locke. And you agree to an annulment of your marriage with victoria.

Ashland: An annulment, not a divorce?

Adam: Well, a divorce applies to a valid marriage. Given the way that you fraudulently worked your way into her life, your union was never legally considered a marriage, so it would be annulled. Now, once you’ve signed all the necessary paperwork, we will wire money into an account that you give us.

Ashland: Why would I expect you to make good on that?

Adam: Why wouldn’t I? It’s in my best interests that you get the money you need to disappear.

Ashland: Yeah, well, if that’s the case, then why don’t we do it this way, okay? You wire the money first, and then I sign the agreement. For copd,

Nick: [ Sighs ] Well, it’s the last part I’m concerned about. I’m sure you’re hurting. I just wanted to check on you.

Victoria: Do you know what’s really upsetting to me? Is that my family continues to doubt me and to intervene after I specifically told you all that I — I could handle this. I have been working really hard to convince ashland to set up adam, and then adam goes and he makes ashland an offer? He couldn’t bring himself to be a part of a plan that was mine — he had to make an end run around me with his own deal. And then he didn’t even bother to tell me about it. I mean, and now I’m playing catch-up, and it just makes everything harder.

Nick: Look, I get it. Adam’s motives are infuriating, but the blame for this whole thing falls on ashland. What he did was reprehensible. And we’re all grasping at straws trying to find a way to get this guy out of our lives, but more importantly, away from you.

Victoria: I had already come up with a solution. I didn’t need your input.

Nick: Who cares whose idea it is? If ashland is actually willing to sit down with adam and talk terms, then maybe adam’s plan is the best one we have.

Victoria: I can’t believe you’re siding with adam on this.

Nick: I’m not. We all want the same thing here, and that is to make locke disappear. And it sounds like offering him some money is the best thing we can do. So what do you think? Is he considering it? Is he wavering? Do I need to get involved in this?

Victoria: I don’t know what he’s gonna do.

Nick: Well, I’m telling you right now, I’m getting sick and tired of everyone treating ashland with kid gloves, trying to lure him in to these carefully laid-out plans. Well, I think all these plans are weak, and I think it’s time I get rid of this guy myself.

Victoria: Don’t you dare.

Adam: Okay, should we synchronize the paperwork and the payment to happen at the same time? 1, 2, 3, go?

Ashland: You can’t blame me for not trusting you.

Adam: I get it. But you are actually the one that has proven to be untrustworthy, okay? My family takes the greater risk by paying you first.

Ashland: We both have a lot at stake here.

Adam: Okay, okay, at this point, I don’t know — or frankly, I don’t care — what your motivations are, but I can tell you what ours are — we want you out. And my father has agreed that $500 million is more than a fair price to pay to achieve that. We have no reason to screw you over. And frankly, we don’t want to deal with whatever revenge plot you would concoct if we did. Because we know what you’re capable of. So all you have to do is take the half-a-billion-dollar leap of faith, you sign the agreement, and we’ll wire the money. It’s non-negotiable.

Lily: If you’ll excuse me.

Sally: I’ve learned that doing things on the up-and-up is the better path — the only path, really, now that I’m the coo of a major company. My behavior reflects on newman media, and I take that responsibility very seriously, so I have every intention of earning your respect and the respect of the other moguls in this town.

Lily: Look, that’s great, honestly. I really hope that’s true. But I think that as long as you’re partnered up with adam, you will find that people have a hard time taking you seriously.

Billy: I don’t think I can put that out there. I can’t say that.

[ Sighs ] Clearly ashland locke is on my mind. Although it did help me figure out why I feel so protective about victoria… I made a promise to not get involved in her personal life. So what now? There’s got to be something else to talk about because there’s so much going on. Starting with jack… and the pain that diane is about to wreak on his life. Let’s go there. People don’t need to have a lot of power to be manipulative. Some people have zero ability to tell the truth, to be honest. All they know is playing games. So how do you deal with someone who lies to you, who deceives you in such a massive, big way that it destroys lives? What do you do when that person weasels their way back into your life…only to do it all over again? Over and over and over again, causing you more pain and hurt. It’s not gonna take a genius to figure out who I’m talking about there. If I’m gonna talk like this, there’s only one solution. It’s my woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Lily: Well, I wish you luck with everything.

Sally: What can I do to make amends and wipe the slate clean? Because now that I’m the coo of newman media and you’re running chancellor, we’re going to be running in the same circles.

Lily: Yeah, I’m not so sure about that.

Sally: I heard that you’re going to be merging with hamilton-winters. Huge congrats on that. I’m just saying that who knows what kinds of business dealings we might be able to do in the future, and I would really like us to get along.

Lily: Look, getting along and being friends is something that has to be earned. Takes a level of trust, right? And I hope that you’re a better person than who you were when you first came into town. And I am always willing to give someone a second chance. But people have to show that they actually deserve it.

Sally: Challenge accepted. I do believe that one day we could be friends. And it’s something I would like to work towards.

Lily: Well, I’ll give you one thing, you definitely don’t lack nerve, that’s for sure. Maybe next time work on your subtlety.

Mariah: Oh, my gosh. You okay?

Tessa: Yep.

Mariah: Alright, um…

Tessa: Whew!

Mariah: Who do you think bought more?

Tessa: Let’s call it a tie.

Mariah: I call it a win for the both of us. Um…[ Sighs ]

Tessa: Okay, is it time for our fashion show? I cannot wait to see what you picked out.

Mariah: I mean, I really like the stuff I picked out for myself, but I’m kind of more excited at the stuff I picked out for you behind your back when you weren’t looking.

Tessa: [ Gasps ] You got stuff for me?

Mariah: I did. It’s just a few things that i thought you would look fantastic in, so I hope you’re not sick of trying on clothes because you’re gonna have a lot more outfit changes than me.

Tessa: Yeah, I’m not sure that’s true, because I picked out some stuff for you, too.

Mariah: You did? Oh, wow. Okay, um…so let’s dress each other, and then we can see how well we know each other’s style.

Victoria: Ashland is aware of how much my family hates him. But you need to stay out of it, nicholas. It’s just gonna rile you up. It’s not gonna accomplish anything.

Nick: Well, it is driving me nuts sitting around, doing nothing. And it’s not just because of everything ashland has done, but because of my concern for you. This whole situation has gotten completely out of control, and i know it’s taking its toll. I also know that the longer it takes us to get him out of our lives, the harder it is on you.

Victoria: I know, I know. I know you have my best interests at heart, but ashland is not gonna walk away from me and this company just because you confront him. In fact, if you personally attack him, it might have the opposite effect. He might just dig in deeper. And, yes, as furious as I am with adam for going off on his own and making this offer, we’re just gonna have to let it play out.

Nick: It’s very frustrating that you won’t let me help you get through this.

Victoria: It’s not your job to do that. I can get myself through this. Ashland can’t crush me. I’m stronger than you all think I am.

Nick: You think I don’t know that? Vick, you think I don’t know how strong you are? Anyone in the world would be overwhelmed by this. My concern is that ashland has dug himself in so deep with this family that we will never be able to get rid of him. Just the thought of him makes me want to strangle him.

Ashland: [ Exhales sharply ] Great. I see the newman brother are working overtime to protect their sister. When are you going to learn, nick, she does not need your interference? When I get a migraine,

Sally: Got us some tapas.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I can’t even think about eating right now.

Sally: Why? What happened? Did you meet with ashland?

Adam: [ Sighs ] Mm-hmm. He wouldn’t commit to the deal. I laid out our terms — that he had to walk away and annul his marriage to victoria. And he was stone-faced and he was cool under pressure, but i swear I saw something in his eyes when I mentioned annulment. It was like that got under his skin more than the prospect of losing control of newman/locke.

Sally: Huh. Maybe he really does have feelings for victoria.

Adam: I don’t even know how that’s possible, given what he’s done. Besides, the annulment wasn’t even the sticking point. It seemed like he was gonna agree to the deal, and then we just got caught up arguing about the logistics — how is gonna shoot first. Was he gonna agree to it or are we gonna send the money? And then it just became this game of chicken.

Sally: Where’d you leave it?

Adam: He said he needed to find out one last thing before agreeing to it.

Sally: What was the “one last thing”?

Adam: I don’t know. But I bet it has something to do with victoria.

Victoria: I need to speak with ashland alone. Please.

Nick: You know, on top of everything that you have done, you’re tearing apart my sister’s relationship with this family, and you couldn’t care less. Is there not an ounce of decency inside of you?

Ashland: Don’t worry. You won’t have to deal with me much longer.

Nick: I better not.

Victoria: Well, that could’ve been much worse. You defused the situation.

Ashland: Are you okay? Did he upset you?

Victoria: That doesn’t matter. What did you tell adam?

Lily: Hello.

Billy: Hey.

Lily: I’m gonna need wine with my dinner.

Billy: Is that relaxation or aggravation?

Lily: Oh, the latter. Getting takeout should not be so stressful. I ran into sally at society, and apparently she wants to be my new best friend.

Billy: Uh, yeah, that’s, uh —

Lily: Not happening at all.

Billy: Good.

Lily: Anyway, did you finish your latest podcast episode?

Billy: Kind of, yes. Something good came out of it, though. I figured out a way to turn my one podcast into two.

Lily: Wait, I’m sorry, i thought you were having a problem figuring out your next episode. Now you have an idea for two series?

Billy: Well, the first podcast about delia was, you know, all about me from my heart, and that felt amazing, but I also realized that the people that are listening, they know who I’m talking about.

Lily: Yeah, that’s probably true.

Billy: So I took some of your advice, and I started to unpack why I feel so protective about victoria, which led me to talk about the abuse of power, which inevitably led me to ashland locke. Then I started talking about emotional manipulation, which led me to diane and jack.

Lily: You think people are gonna piece it together when they find out that she’s alive?

Billy: Yes, I do. And the whole purpose of this podcast was to feel free to be able to say what was on my mind without feeling that I was going to expose myself or anyone i care about, to speak my mind without consequences.

Lily: So you’re gonna be like that late-night radio guy who gets the town all riled up?

Billy: Hey, maybe. I feel like the only way I can do that is by coming up with a persona, to do a podcast under a pseudonym.

Tessa: Are you ready?

Mariah: I was born ready, babe.

Tessa: Okay, here I come.

Mariah: Wow!

[ Gasps ]

Mariah: But it doesn’t really matter what you wear, ’cause you’re gonna look gorgeous in anything.

This is the story of two homes.

Ashland: I can’t respond to adam and victor until I get an answer from you.

Victoria: An answer to what?

Ashland: To the question i asked you earlier. You never gave me a response. I don’t know if that was your intention, but I need an answer from you right now. Are you willing to walk away from all of this and start fresh? Because that’s the only way i will agree to their terms.

Victoria: And what are their terms?

Ashland: I cede control of newman/locke — which I’m willing to do, that’s fine — but they’re also insisting that we dissolve our marriage, that we get an annulment that acknowledges our marriage was based on a fraud.

Victoria: And you’re willing to admit that? That our love was nothing but a sham?

Ashland: No. Not our love. If in truth you love me as much as I love you. I’m willing to agree to all of it. Dissolve our marriage, get the annulment, cede control of the company. But my love for you, my feelings for you cannot be signed away and they cannot be bought for any amount of money, so the question remains. Do you love me?

Victoria: Yes, of course i love you. Of course I love you. And, yes, I would be willing to leave all of this behind for you.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] That’s all I needed to hear.

Lily: Wait, so now you think you have to hide your identity to do the podcast?

Billy: Well, that way, i could protect the people I care about, including you, and let’s face it — I’m the coo of chancellor. I can’t trash talk a bunch of people publicly without a bunch of lawsuits being thrown our way.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, look, i see your point, but I actually loved how personal and emotional your podcast about delia was.

Billy: Hey, believe me, I do too. And that’s why I think this can be good, right? I can still speak about the things that move me and have them focused on positive, life-affirming topics, and then when I want to…go at the bad actors of the world, I can do that. Speak freely under a pseudonym. I can speak truth to power without it affecting me and the people that I care about.

Lily: Well, it’s very bruce wayne and batman.

Billy: Yeah, billy abbott by day, the dark knight by night.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: I can use a harmonizer to change my voice, make it unrecognizable. We can brand it like a completely different show. What do you think?

Lily: I mean, look, your passion is infectious, and i could see how being anonymous could open up the world for you, so why not? Might be fun, right?

Billy: Exactly, and I can say all sorts of things that billy abbott maybe couldn’t or shouldn’T.

Tessa: Alright. What about this — yay or nay?

Mariah: Nay.

Tessa: Okay.

Mariah: Uh, what about these two?

Tessa: Mm, I don’t know. Maybe a “maybe” pile?

Mariah: Do we have a maybe pile?

Tessa: Well, maybe we should start one.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Okay, well, let me ask you this — who do you think will be the first person to cry at the wedding?

Tessa: Oh, sharon, hands down.

Mariah: Yeah, agreed. She’s so excited to be helping plan this thing.

Tessa: Well, I am very grateful for all the help from your family with the planning, because it is gonna be one hell of a party.

Mariah: That it is. But only after the vows. Which, um, you know, have you given any thought to those?

Tessa: Oh, only every waking moment. Yeah.

Mariah: Oh, well, do you want to, you know, give me something?

Tessa: Oh, no, I am not saying a peep until may 13th.

Mariah: Great, now you’re making me even more nervous.

Tessa: Why?

Mariah: Because you’re a songwriter! It’s literally what you do. You turn words into beautiful lyrics. Your vows are gonna be so much better than mine.

Tessa: Stop that. Every time you speak from the heart, it is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.

Mariah: Thank you. I just can’t believe all of this is happening, you know? The love between us, I mean, the love around us is just gonna make the most amazing day.

Tessa: I mean, not that we need a wedding to confirm our love or to know that we’re forever.

Mariah: Yeah, but still. I am very excited that we get to share our joy with all the people that we love. For copd,

Tessa: Mm. You know, I was thinking… with all the wedding planning, we haven’t really focused on the adoption at all. Is that bothering you?

Mariah: Yeah, I realized that when I saw the adoption paperwork under the piles of the lists for the wedding.

Tessa: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: I still want to move forward with it. What about you?

Tessa: Oh. Hey, yes, of course. I want to bring a child into this family, 100%.

Mariah: Well, I think we have to face the fact that adopting and having a wedding at the same time was maybe a little bit too much. I just don’t know if I can do home study and lawyers and all the paperwork right now, you know? And I’m afraid a social worker would — would see that and think that we weren’t serious, when we are. It’s just…

Tessa: Yeah, no, I totally understand. We are on the same page. A month or two delay after we get married, I think, will only make us stronger candidates as parents. And I do have a lot of shows scheduled, which might make things a little tricky.

Mariah: Well, we will work around your schedule. And I promise I will take care of anything that I can while my wife is gone.

Tessa: I can handle some things from the road.

Mariah: So we’re agreed? We still want to move forward with a family?

Tessa: This is gonna be the best year of our lives.

Billy: Hello. This is “not billy abbott.” Geez. Of the lollipop gang. Let’s try this one. This is also “not billy abbott.” But clearly a baritone, probably a super villain.

[ Sighs ] Okay. Hello, this — whoa.

[ Chuckles ] This your local cable company, press one for billing. Ah. Hello? This is “not billy abbott.” Okay. I like that. That sounds interesting, and it doesn’t sound like me. Let’s try this one. Let’s talk about power. Everybody wants it. How much is too much? Then there’s that age-old question — does absolute power corrupt absolutely? Are those who crave power doomed to leave victims in their wake?

Ashland: Adam, it’s me. Have the paperwork drawn up.

Billy: Can the powerful who have been corrupted be redeemed?

Adam: Ashland’s taking the deal.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Is it possible to have power, to have everything you could want, and live a life with an open, vulnerable heart? Or will you only be destroyed?

At The Grand Phoenix, Adam told Ashland he was making the right choice accepting the offer. Ashland stated that he had some terms, and Adam scoffed, saying that the Newmans would destroy Ashland if he didn’t accept the offer. Adam revealed that he and Victor had terms. Ashland asked what Adam and Victor wanted in return. Adam said that Ashland would need to sign something relinquishing his claim to Newman Locke and get an annulment from Victoria. Ashland noted that they were asking him to get an annulment, not a divorce. Adam said that divorce only applied when the marriage was valid, which wasn’t the case here, since Ashland fraudulently worked his way into Victoria’s life. Once Ashland signed the paperwork, Victor and Adam would wire him the money. Ashland didn’t trust the Newmans to keep up their end of the bargain. He wanted the money before he signed the agreement. Adam said the family wanted Ashland out, and they had no reason to screw him over. The Newmans knew what Ashland was capable of, and they didn’t want to deal with him plotting revenge against them. Adam assured Ashland that he’d be paid as soon as he signed the papers. Ashland had something to do before he could make a decision.

Mariah and Tessa were at Crimson Lights. Chelsea was going to be designing their wedding outfits, and she’d told them to check out thrift stores for inspiration. It was going to be 70s glam, but they wanted some nods to traditions. Mariah vetoed Tessa’s idea of matching white jumpsuits, because matching outfits seemed more like a Halloween thing to her. They went shopping, then they went home with a lot of clothes. They’d both secretly picked out some outfits for each other, and they decided to dress each other and see if they knew each other’s style.

Mariah and Tessa had a little fashion show in a montage, and in the end, they collapsed onto the couch with their heads leaning against each other. They had fun, and they found a ton of inspiration for Chelsea to use. They chatted and both agreed Sharon would be the first person to cry at the party. Tessa was glad to have Mariah’s family’s help planning. Tessa said it was going to be one hell of a party. Mariah asked if Tessa had thought about the vows. Tessa was thinking about them every waking moment. Mariah felt nervous, because she didn’t think she’d be able to come up with vows as good as Tessa, the songwriter’s. Tessa said every time Mariah spoke from the heart, it was the most beautiful thing Tessa ever heard. Mariah thought their love and the love around them would make this the most amazing day. Tessa said they didn’t need a wedding to confirm their love. Mariah was still very excited to share their joy with the people they loved. They kissed.

Later, Mariah and Tessa were nestled together under a blanket. Tessa asked if it bothered Mariah that they hadn’t focused on the adoption recently. Mariah still wanted to move forward with the adoption and asked how Tessa felt. Tessa still wanted a child too. Mariah and Tessa were in agreement that they couldn’t work on the adoption process while planning a wedding. They were worried that a social worker would think they weren’t taking things seriously if they didn’t seem fully focused on the adoption. Tessa thought they’d look like better candidates if they delayed things for a month or two. Tessa also had some shows planned and that would make things tricky. Mariah said she’d handle things while her wife was touring. Tessa said she could handle some stuff from the road too. They agreed that they were going to move forward with a family, and Tessa said this was going to be the best year of their lives. They kissed.

At Society, Sally tried to chat with Lily, but got a cool response. Sally understood Lily was giving her the cold shoulder because she’d donned a wig and kept an eye on Billy. She was hoping they could get past that though. Lily thought Sally’s acts were better described as stalking and entrapment. Sally learned that it was better to stay on the up and up because her behavior reflected on Newman Media. She wanted to earn respect of Lily and the other moguls. Lily thought people would have a hard time taking Sally seriously while she was teamed up with Adam. Sally asked Lily what she could do wipe the slate clean. Sally figured she and Lily would be running in the same circles now that she was COO of Newman Media and Lily was running Chancellor. “Yeah, I’m not so sure about that,” Lily replied. Sally heard about the merger with Hamilton Winters, and she congratulated Lily. Sally was hoping they could get along, since they might do business together. Lily said that getting along and being friends was something that had to be earned. Lily was always willing to give someone a second chance, if they showed they deserved it. Sally accepted the challenge, and she wanted to work toward being friends. Lily told Sally to work her subtlety and left.

At his place, Billy struggled to come up with suitable material for his podcast. He thought about calling Victoria, but he stopped himself and called Nick instead. Billy was worried about Victoria and was thinking about trying to get through to her one last time. Nick told Billy to stay out of it and let the family handle it. He made it clear that he had no intention of letting Ashland get away with what he’d done to his Victoria. After the call ended, Billy remembered Lily encouraging him to try and contain his protective feelings toward Victoria. Billy did a podcast about the abuse of power and the collateral damage it caused. He acknowledged that he’d been afforded many privileges, as an Abbott, and some would say he’d abused those privileges, but he’d worked hard to change. He suggested that when he saw wrongdoing, it was a like a mirror reflecting his wrongs. It made him want to fight to protect the victims of power. He got enraged when he saw someone use their power to grab more and more, when they had plenty of money, a successful career and a loving wife.

Billy realized he couldn’t release a podcast about Victoria’s situation. He shifted gears and began to record something inspired by Jack and Diane’s situation. He began to talk about liars who deceived people, destroyed lives and then weaseled their way back into people’s lives. It occurred to Billy that everyone would know who this podcast episode was about, too. Lily went home and told Billy she needed some wine after a run-in with Sally. She stated that Sally wanted to be her new best friend. He was glad when she assured him that she wasn’t going to befriend Sally. She asked about his podcast. He said that he realized when he did the podcast, his listeners would understand the subject of his episodes. He’d decided that he should do a podcast under a pseudonym.

Billy said that if he did the podcast anonymously, he could protect the people he loved, including her. Plus, as the COO of Chancellor, he couldn’t be publicly trash-talking a bunch of people without risking a lawsuit. Lily saw the point, but she loved how personal and emotional the podcast about Delia was. He agreed. He said he could still focus on the things that moved him, and he could speak truth to power without it affecting him and the people he cared about. She called it very Bruce Wayne and Batman. He said he could use a harmonizer to change his voice. She thought it might be fun. He said he could say all sorts of things Billy Abbott couldn’t, or shouldn’t.

Billy played around with the harmonizer until he found an altered voice he liked. He began to record the podcast.

He didn’t pity her; he was worried. She was upset that her family continued to doubt her and intervene after she repeatedly said she could handle this. Victoria asked Nick to leave so she could talk to Ashland. Nick griped that Ashland didn’t care that he was tearing apart Victoria’s relationships with her family. Ashland said Nick wouldn’t have to deal with him much longer. “I’d better not,” Nick said. He left. Victoria told Ashland that he’d defused the situation with Nick. He asked if she was okay and if Nick upset her. She said it didn’t matter. She wanted to know what happened with Adam. Before Ashland could accept the deal, he needed to know whether Victoria was willing to go away with him and start fresh. Victoria asked what the terms of the deal were. Ashland said he had to walk away from Newman Locke, and that was fine, but he also had to get an annulment that acknowledged their marriage was based on a fraud. She asked if he was willing to admit their love was a fraud. He said no, not if she loved him as much as he loved her. He was willing to get the annulment and cede control of the company, but he said his love for her couldn’t be signed away. “Do you love me?,” he asked. She assured him that she did love him and that she was willing to leave all this behind for him. He sighed in relief and hugged her.

Billy recorded the podcast. He asked if absolute power corrupted and if the powerful who’d been corrupted could be redeemed. As this played in a voice-over, Ashland was shown taking the deal and Adam was shown telling Sally the news. Adam and Sally kissed. Back at Newman Locke, Victoria stared off into the distance. Ashland walked up and put his arms around her. She turned and smiled, and they hugged, but when he couldn’t see her face, her smile faded.

Sally: Well, I was going to tell you what I’ve been thinking about for the last couple of hours, but…

Adam: I have been thinking about the same thing.

Sally: I’ll bet. I mean, you could point your mind towards the project that you pitched to victor and got approved, but…

Adam: But…this.

Sally: This is a big deal.

Adam: Yeah, it is potentially my birthday and christmas and a stock invested in splitting all rolled into one. If only the phone would ring. I could be getting a call from ashland right now saying he accepts my offer. Or he’s rejecting it.

Sally: Anticipation could be exciting, depending on who you’re waiting with.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] I mean, ashland is a smart guy. He had to do the math and realize that my deal was his best offer. It’s the only way that he can escape the mayhem with his dignity and his reputation intact. Right?

Sally: Clean slate, full bank account, can’t lose. I mean, I would take the offer.

Adam: Well, then why isn’t he jumping on it?

Sally: Because he’s toying with you. That’s what he does. He’s played this game 100 times.

Adam: I was — was flying blind. I just — I was totally going on impulse when I offered to give him that money to walk away from newman/locke. Telling that I was representing the newman family? What the hell was I thinking?

Sally: You were thinking like a leader.

Adam: [ Sighs ] It felt like the right move to make at the time. But maybe I just gave him another card to play.

Victoria: You went behind my back, daddy, to bribe ashland into leaving me?

[ Scoffs ] I don’t know what part is more offensive.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] It seems an offer was made, right, ashland? And you’re kind of considering it seriously?

Ashland: I don’t know what other option I have at this point. I want this turmoil to end, for your sake.

Nikki: The best way to end it is to admit to your lies and leave of your own volition.

Ashland: Tell your errand boy, adam, I will meet him at the grand phoenix to discuss the terms.

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: Does somebody want to tell me what’s going on here? Why the hell did you two do that?

Nick: No signs of a fight. I guess it was okay to leave you and ashland in the same room.

Sharon: [ Sighs ] How is a person supposed to believe anything that man says after what he did to victoria? You know, he started talking about how he’s gonna exonerate himself and that he’s innocent of all charges.

Nick: Thought we said we weren’t gonna engage.

Sharon: Well, I had to say something. I wasn’t in any danger. There were witnesses. Then adam came in.

Nick: What’d they say to each other?

Sharon: I don’t know. I didn’t want to get involved, so I made up some excuse and i ducked into the back, but i popped my head out now and then and watched them talking.

Nick: How’d they seem, like enemies, friends? Was it loud? Was it not?

Sharon: Mm, they were too far away for me to hear.

Nick: Well, what about, like, body language? You pick up on anything?

Sharon: I don’t know, seemed serious. High-key. They went out into the patio, so they obviously wanted privacy.

Nick: Okay.

Sharon: It was intense. I mean, nothing hostile, but they were both determined and very focused, like whatever they were talking about, their lives depended on it.

Victor: I got to come clean with you. I’m not the one who offered ashland money.

Victoria: Adam just took it upon himself? Why didn’t you just tell him, “ashland, no, I did not authorize adam to offer him money to go away”?

Victor: I’m going to discuss many things with adam, but i would not contradict him to ashland. We need to work on this whole thing as a family, stick together, okay? However, it was kind of interesting to watch ashland’s reaction to the offer. He seemed kind of interested, didn’t he?

Victoria: Do not take that at face value. It was never gonna be that simple to get rid of him. He was testing you, just like you were testing him.

Nikki: If ashland was testing anybody, it was you.

Victoria: Oh, he was not, mother.

Nikki: Oh, yes, he was. He was watching you. Every time you moved or looked his way.

Victor: Well, he can sense that you’re torn. You know he’s trying to drive a wedge between you and our family.

Victoria: I am well aware of that. Look, maybe adam’s obnoxious interference will make it easier for me to pretend that I am completely fed up with adam and blame him for setting up ashland.

Victor: But you said that ashland doesn’t like your plan of planting false evidence against adam.

Victoria: I am not giving up. I’m gonna do everything that i can to get him out of our lives and out of this company. And I’m gonna do it without spending tens of millions of dollars. Wait a minute. How much did adam offer ashland?

Nikki: $500 million. Nothing like a weekend in the woods.

Victoria: Where the hell does adam get off making an offer like that? We had a plan. We all agreed.

Victor: I will be speaking with adam. I don’t know what he was thinking when he made this plan, but he’s gonna hear from me, okay? Having said that, it’s irrelevant because we’re all trying to get rid of this bastard.

Victoria: Yes, I know, by moving forward with my plan.

Victor: But your plan has not come to fruition.

Victoria: And adam doesn’t want it to. I warned you over and over again that he would do anything that he could to try to undermine me and to try to make me look bad. This is really incredible. It’s all your fault.

Victor: Oh, yeah, what did i do?

Victoria: You should have put a stop to it before it started by letting adam know that you expected his full cooperation.

Nikki: Alright, alright. Victoria, there is nothing stopping you from executing your plan if ashland doesn’t take the money.

Victoria: “If”? Of course he won’t take the money.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Why? Because he’s eternally in love with you?

Victoria: I think you’re missing my point. I am never going to fall for ashland’s lies again. I know his mind far better than you.

Victor: Well, then kindly educate us.

Victoria: He would never accept a bribe, and he never backs down from a fight.

Nikki: If he doesn’t want the money, then why did he agree to consider adam’s offer?

Victoria: I don’t know. Maybe it was a part of his plan.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Maybe he doesn’t have any plans. Maybe this is the best option left.

Victoria: Well, I guess time will tell which one of us is right.

Nick: You know, I guess it could’ve been a business meeting. Adam is the temporary ceo.

Sharon: Of newman/locke? How did that happen?

Nick: Yeah, it was dad’s idea. He thought if he put adam in that role, it might convince ashland and victoria to not go to italy and stay in town.

Sharon: Well, I guess that worked. They stuck around.

Nick: Yeah, but adam resented it so much, he refused to go along with victoria’s plan to oust ashland unless dad decided to keep him in the big chair.

Sharon: Wow, that just sounds so —

Nick: Self-serving? Like the old adam? Imagine that. I actually tried to talk to him about it, you know, just to remind him how much progress he’s made and to let him know that it would be a real mistake to use this situation with victoria to his advantage or to allow ambition or sibling rivalry to get the better of him.

Sharon: Do you think he listened to you?

Nick: I don’t know. It was worth a shot.

Sharon: How’s victoria handling all this?

Nick: It’s hard to say. I mean, she’s pretty distant. She’s not listening to us. We’re trying to get her to come up with a plan “b,” just in case plan “a” doesn’t work. You know, I don’t think ashland is buying this at all, but she’s just so scared and defensive.

Sharon: Well, of course she is. She just had her heart broken by a man who one swept her off her feet. She’s probably feeling used and exposed.

Nick: Unfortunately, she’s still in love with him.

Sharon: Oh, no.

Nick: But she also knows that she can’t trust him completely, so when you add it all up, there’s no way in telling where she’s headed with all this or what to expect. In fact, I don’t even think victoria knows at this point.

Sally: You need to find some way to let this go. You did what you could. Seized the moment. You took bold, decisive action.

Adam: [ Exhales sharply ] That could fail miserably.

Sally: If this thing with ashland doesn’t work out, you’re gonna come up with something else. And do you know why?

Adam: Tell me.

Sally: Because you’re brilliant and relentless — a combination that is sexy as hell.

Adam: Well, that’s probably why we get along so well.

Sally: I read your mind.

Adam: Oh, you don’t say.

Sally: Do you know what I’m thinking right now?

Adam: Something like this?

Victor: Son, we have some serious business to discuss.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] I’m steve, I lost 138 pounds in nine months on golo

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Well, I’d love to hear more about what you’re here to say, but sally stays. I’m sure this is about ashland, and she is up to speed on everything.

Victor: Is she also aware of the reckless move you made offering this criminal millions of dollars to get out of the company?

Adam: I mean, I’m the one who made the deal, so why did he run to you?

Victor: Because he doesn’t trust you because he knows you were lying when you said you had the backing of your family.

Adam: So what’d he say?

[ Clears throat ] Is he gonna take the deal?

Victor: What difference does it make what he says or said? You’re trying to buy some time, trying to figure out where the hell to get that amount of money from?

Adam: Come on, nobody has that kind of cash laying around.

Victor: This is your first move as an executive, as a temporary executive of newman/locke? What are you gonna do, draw the funds from newman/locke?

Adam: No, it wouldn’t be appropriate to use company funds for a personal family, matter.

Victor: Then where the hell were you gonna get the money from?

Adam: Victoria’s the one who brought ashland into this family, so she should be the one responsible for getting him out.

Victor: Your lack of sympathy for your sister is appalling. As a family, we don’t do this.

Sharon: I remember how worried nikki and victor were about victoria when she split with billy. After she was attacked. Nikki even asked me to help. I mean, I imagine in some ways this feels even worse for them.

Nick: Oh, yeah, they were all in on the wedding, and I was sent to the doghouse for even daring to doubt the guy.

Sharon: And now it’s all falling apart anyway.

Nick: The scary part is if it doesn’t fall apart completely and victoria tries to salvage her relationship with ashland.

Sharon: You mean if she chooses him over the entire family?

Nick: If she does that, it could cause a rift in the family that may never repair.

Sharon: Oh, nikki.

Nikki: Hi, sharon.

Sharon: You know what? Why don’t I get you your usual? Are you gonna stick around or do you want it to go?

Nikki: Make it to go, and we’ll play it by ear. Thank you.

Nick: What have I missed?

Nikki: You’re never gonna believe it.

Nick: Let me guess, something to do with adam.

Nikki: Oh, how did you know?

Nick: Sharon said she saw adam and ashland in here talking earlier, and from the looks of it, it was a pretty intense conversation.

Nikki: Apparently adam has decided that he’s going to handle this ashland situation all on his own.

Nick: Nobody asked for his help.

Nikki: No, no, we did not. However, he told ashland that the family had authorized him to make an offer of an ungodly amount of money to terminate his contract at newman/locke and to walk away from victoria.

Nick: Let me guess how ashland reacted — he went whining and crying to victoria, saying there was no amount of money that will ever replace her and that their love will last forever and ever.

Nikki: Actually, no, he went to your father first.

Nick: Why would he do that?

Nikki: To make sure it was a bona fide offer. It was the first your father heard of it, but he played along and pretended that the offer was authentic.

Nick: Are you telling me that ashland’s considering taking this deal from adam?

Nikki: I don’t know. Victoria says he’s just pretending to be interested.

Nick: Well, it’s probably hard for her to accept that she meant so little to him.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] She begged us to trust her to handle this, and god knows I am trying my best, but the more time she spends with him, the more opportunity he has to charm his way back into her heart.

Victoria: We should talk.

Ashland: I’ll do anything you want, but not here. We need privacy.

Victoria: That would be ideal, yes. I’ll grab us a suite.

Wait, oh, yes

Nick: $500 million?

Nikki: Can you believe that?

Nick: It’s the exact figure that victoria, abby, and I won in that lawsuit with dad.

Nikki: Coincidence?

Nick: Doesn’t feel like it.

Nikki: Have you ever heard of a golden parachute that large for a ceo that has barely spent any time in that position? Now, mind you, adam is asking him to do more than just walk away from his job, he has to say goodbye to victoria, too.

Nick: Look, he’s probably just flexing his muscles. You know, he gets rid of ashland, he impresses dad. He proves that he can handle things on all fronts, unlike victoria.

Nikki: Yes, that’s exactly the message he was sending — that he thought her plan was doomed to fail. And she saw that for what it was. She’s furious.

Nick: And she has every right to be. If adam was this convinced that victoria’s plan was gonna be so ineffective, then he should’ve come to us, and together we could’ve come up with an alternative option. Instead, he just goes off freelancing.

Nikki: I really don’t know that he has it in him to be a team player.

Nick: How’s dad reacting to this?

Nikki: Well, he’s not happy.

Victor: I assume your coo encouraged you to take this path. And you thought it was a good idea based on what, based on her extensive experience in corporate deal-making?

Adam: No, dad, this was my idea. And it was mine alone.

Sally: But once I did hear about it, I thought it was wonderful. Simple, clear, and direct.

Adam: Look, I wanted to provide ashland with the incentive to do what you’ve been telling him to do ever since you discovered he’s a fraud — to get out of our lives.

Victor: Are you forgetting that victoria already had a plan?

Adam: Can I get a show of hands of anyone who actually thought that plan could work? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?!

Victor: Stop it!

Adam: Okay? I am coming at the problem from a different angle.

Victor: Really? Hell of an angle. You slack off, you listen to her advice, and you agree to pay this bastard hundreds of millions of dollars. Are you serious?!

Sally: If I may, adam’s plan is only expensive if it works, but you haven’t even told us how ashland responded to adam’s deal. If he wasn’t interested or he just blew it off, then this whole conversation is moot, right? There’s nothing to argue about.

Adam: He didn’t reject it, did he?

Victoria: Tell me that you never took that offer seriously. Tell me that you were just trying to make adam feel self-satisfied so that he would let his guard down.

Ashland: I’m sorry to say that adam has every reason to feel confident right now. He’s finally on track to getting everything he’s ever wanted. He’ll be victor’s shining star. Respected, admired, and, yes, he will take over for me once I’m gone.

Victoria: “Gone”?

Ashland: Yes. I told you already I want to get the hell out of this place. Start someplace fresh.

Victoria: You were tired. I — I just thought you were fantasizing or that you felt discouraged.

Ashland: All of the above.

Victoria: You know there is still time to hold adam accountable for all that he’s done. Clearly you can see by now that he is trying to set you up, now that he’s made this final push to shove you out of the company, now he’s demanding that we end our marriage. Tell me that you’re not gonna give in to these demands. You’re gonna fight this, right?

Ashland: I know that you want me to plant evidence to incriminate adam.

Victoria: It’s the least that he deserves.

Ashland: I care more about what you deserve. Victoria, I can’t give it all to you anymore. We can no longer continue the life that we’d planned and loved and built, running newman/locke side-by-side and trusting each other implicitly. That life is not gonna happen. But I can still be the man that I promised you I would be on the day we got married.

[ Sighs ] The thing is…I’m a selfish man. Greedy and selfish. I don’t just want your love. I want your respect. And I know if I do this thing that you’re asking me to do, that’s what I’ll lose.

Victoria: And that’s your final answer. You’re not gonna do what’s necessary to bring adam down.

Ashland: No. The answer to lies is not more lies.

Victoria: But it’s all been lies, hasn’t it? From the very beginning.

Victor: I will tell you about my conversation with ashland after you assure that I’ve been heard and understood.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Loud and clear. You want me to work for the good of the family, and honestly, that’s what I thought that I was doing.

Victor: Don’t ever go off on your own and make a deal of this magnitude without me knowing about it.

Adam: Listen, I was trying to help. Sometimes you got to think outside the boardroom. I made a judgment call.

Victor: You had no right to take the situation into your own hands — none!

Adam: Okay, look, I should’ve come to you before I made the offer, definitely, yes, but i wasn’t trying to get away with anything. I saw locke, the idea came to me, and I just ran with it.

Sally: It’s true. I was there. It was not something we had discussed. He was just inspired.

Victor: I don’t care if you were there or not! It was an impulsive decision. You shouldn’t have made it without consulting me and the family. Don’t you ever do that again! Isn’t that what you accused your sister of, having rushed into a plan?

Adam: Look, there were plenty of problems with victoria’s plan. Most importantly, he didn’t bite on the bait, which was me. And when I gave him my offer, i actually saw a big, beautiful light turn on behind his dead eyes, okay? He was intrigued. So what did the guy say?

Victor: He said he’s at the grand phoenix, waiting for you.

Adam: When? Right now?

Victor: Maybe he’s still there now.

Adam: Okay, uh, well, it’s past the point of no return. Unless you want me to kill this deal. Tell me now. Just say the word, and I’ll drop it.

Victor: Son, let me say this quietly. Once again, don’t ever make a deal without me knowing. Not a deal of that magnitude.

Nick: I mean, is there a chance adam’s plan could work, just paying him off? It’s not clever, it’s not overly complicated, but maybe that’s it’s saving grace.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] It’s easy money, if that’s what ashland is looking for.

Nick: You think he’s ready to give up control of the company?

Nikki: I don’t know. He asked your father to have adam meet him at the grand phoenix so they could go over the agreement. Although that could’ve just been a tactic.

Nick: Well, what does that buy him?

Nikki: I don’t know. More time? He’s always telling her how much he adores her and he would give up the world for her. This scheme feeds right into that. The poor thing, I mean, she must feel like we don’t support her and that we’ve given up faith in her.

Nick: And then ashland could twist things around, make it seem like it’s just the two of them versus the big, mean newman family.

Nikki: And then he can make this enormous sacrifice out of love.

Nick: When really it’s just a ploy, a way to pull her back to him.

Victoria: My god, you really are a piece of work, aren’t you?

Ashland: I don’t understand where this is coming from.

Victoria: Love really is blind, right, ashland? But guess what — my eyes have been opened.

Ashland: By your family.

Victoria: No, by you. There’s one thing I have known, that everybody knows about you, is that you are a fighter. You never surrender and you hardly ever show mercy, so there is no way in hell that you would ever let anyone set you up or sully your reputation. And then what, after that, you’re gonna take a payoff and you’re just gonna walk away from the company that you built with your wife? That wouldn’t happen.

Ashland: You’re making a lot of assumptions.

Victoria: The only reason you stopped looking for evidence against adam is because you know that there isn’t any. You know that he didn’t set you up. You’re 100% guilty. You have been faking your cancer for months. You falsified records. You bribed the doctors. You conned me into caring about you, and after I gave you my heart and my trust and after everything that you put me through, you at least owe me the truth. Can you not give me the truth?!

Ashland: You’re right. About one thing. Who I am — I am a fighter. What you may not be considering is that I’ve changed what I’m fighting for. Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Victoria: You want me to believe that you are fighting for me.

Ashland: I am.

Victoria: And yet you just told my parents that you would consider accepting a bribe to get me out of your life.

[ Scoffs ] I’m sorry, just pardon my confusion.

Ashland: What I consider and what I agree to are not necessarily the same things.

Victoria: Oh, right, yeah. It’s all just semantics.

Ashland: Look, I know that it doesn’t matter anymore what i say to you. It’s not likely you’re gonna believe any promises or denials that come out of my mouth right now. I understand that. I get it.

Victoria: That is so big of you.

Ashland: But I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, okay? I don’t believe you either. When you act like this — so tough and so above it all — i know what’s going on inside.

Victoria: Whatever affection I might still have for you is far outweighed by how angry I am with you.

Ashland: If the situation were reversed, if I found out that you were using me, a sick and dying man, to gain control of locke communications, I would be livid.

Victoria: Would you?

Ashland: Yes. I would feel betrayed, I would feel used, I would feel manipulated, and yet it would be impossible for me to stop loving you. Because I would know in my heart that no matter how our relationship started, no matter what kind of simplistic and grasping intentions we had at the beginning, that what it turned into was something entirely different. Something real and true and strong. And I would know that you were in love with me despite your best efforts to cover it up or pretend it away.

Victoria: It seems that you’ve decided to disregard everything that I say.

Ashland: No, I’m telling you that a love as strong and real as ours cannot be forced or faked. It cannot be an act, and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Victoria: So if the shoe were on the other foot, you would forgive me.

Ashland: Without hesitation.

Victoria: Because?

Ashland: Because I love you. And I could never stop loving you.

Victoria: What is it that you want from me?

Ashland: The same thing you want from me. The truth.

Nick: Alright, you’ll let me know if you hear anything.

Nikki: Yes, of course I will.

Nick: Look, mom, don’t worry. Vick is gonna come out of this stronger and tougher than she’s ever been.

Nikki: I hope so. She’s been through so much.

Nick: She’s gonna be okay.

Nikki: Alright, I’m gonna take off.

Nick: Alright, I love you.

Nikki: Love you too.

Sharon: She looks really worried.

Nick: Well, everything keeps piling up. We thought adam was up to something, and we were right.

Sharon: Why, what did she say to you?

Nick: Do you remember when you saw adam and ashland in here talking?

Sharon: Yeah.

Nick: Well, I guess adam decided he didn’t trust victoria to be able to single-handedly get ashland out of our lives, so what you were watching was adam going behind the family’s back, putting his own plan in motion.

Sharon: Should I act surprised?

Nick: Now everything’s up in the air. Ashland’s gonna have a chance to play us all against each other. It’s time I have a talk with ashland, and I know right where to find him.

Sharon: Wait. Nick, I don’t think that’s a good idea.

Victor: I have issues with your plan, son. What if ashland locke pretends to agree to accept the $500 million? Then he can toy with us. He can suddenly say, “I don’t like the deal.” And then what?

Adam: So what are you gonna do? Are you gonna just wait and hope that victoria’s plan works out?

Victor: Victoria’s plan was a damn good plan, son. Very good plan. All we had to do is catch him in doing something illegal. He would’ve terminated his contract with newman/locke. He would’ve been the hell out.

Sally: If he’s up to something underhanded, he’s never gonna get caught. He’s way too smart. He’s been five steps ahead of victoria since the day he made her his mark, and I am not victim-blaming because I thought he was in love with victoria just like everyone else.

Adam: Look, I’m not asking you to trust locke, because i certainly don’T. But if he agrees to walk away, i will insist that he signs ironclad legal documents. Okay? Nondisclosure, non-compete — all of it. It’ll be easy. We’ll make it clean, and we can get him out of our lives for good.

Victor: All this is contingent upon you getting ahold of $500 million. Where are you gonna get it — victoria? You know that’s out of the question. What? You think it’s gonna come from me?

Adam: What is worth to you to get this guy out of our lives?

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Just give me one good reason why I shouldn’t let ashland have it.

Sharon: Well, you just got through saying how wrong it was for adam to go behind victoria’s back and take charge of the situation himself.

Nick: Yeah, I know, but it’s —

Sharon: How is that any different than you going to confront ashland right now? What is that gonna do? It’ll show victoria that you don’t trust her to handle this herself.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Well, it’ll make me feel better.

Sharon: Okay, but this isn’t about you.

Nick: I know, you’re right.

Sharon: Why are you even involved in this? Why don’t you just sit this one out?

Nick: This sick bastard has caused my sister so much pain.

Sharon: Okay, well, if you want to get involved, go to her. Just offer her your love and support. That’s what she really needs right now.

Adam: Yeah, it’s an obscene amount of money.

Victor: Hmm.

Adam: But what price can you put on freedom? Because that’s what you would be buying for victoria. My sister would never have to see this guy again. She could stop pretending to love him because it’s pretty clear that’s what’s messing with her head, no matter how much she wants to claim otherwise. And, dad, aside from that, we have to get this guy out of the family company. He gets in control, he can make major changes. Our management team — gone. His lieutenants get promoted, he could sell off entire divisions to the highest bidder. I think half a billion dollars is a small price to pay to avoid the kind of chaos that that man could unleash.

Victor: You’re not bringing up anything that I haven’t already considered.

Adam: Well, I figured as much. So what do you want me to do?

Victor: Meet with him. Make the deal.

Adam: And the money?

Victor: It’ll come from your father.

Adam: You — you won’t regret this.

Victor: See to it that i don’T.

Victoria: After everything that’s transpired, how can you expect me to forgive you?

Ashland: No, no, no, don’t go anywhere. I know it sounds mad. Just hear me out. We can start over. And thanks to adam, ironically, we will have all the capital we need to start our next venture.

Victoria, her parents and Ashland were at Newman Locke. “You went behind my back, Daddy? To bribe Ashland into leaving me? I don’t know what part is more offensive,” Victoria said. Victor asked Ashland if he was considering the offer. Ashland told Victoria that he didn’t know what other option he had. He wanted the turmoil to end for Victoria’s sake. Nikki thought that Ashland should admit to his lies and leave of his own volition. Ashland said to tell Adam, Victor’s errand boy, that he’d meet him at The Grand Phoenix. Ashland left the office. In the hallway, he rubbed his forehead and sighed.

Back in the office, Victor said he wasn’t the one who offered Ashland the money. Victoria asked why Victor didn’t say that to Ashland. Victor was going to have a talk with Adam, but he wasn’t going to contradict Adam to Ashland. Victor felt that the family needed to stick together. Victor thought that Ashland seemed kind of interested in the offer though. Victoria said Ashland was just testing Victor. Nikki said that if Ashland was testing anyone, it was Victoria. Victoria disagreed. Victor said Ashland was trying to drive a wedge between Victoria and her family. She knew that. She said maybe Adam’s obnoxious interference will make it easier for her to pretend to Ashland that she was fed up with Adam. Victor noted that Ashland didn’t seem to like the plan to frame Adam. Victoria said she was going to get Ashland out of the company without spending tens of millions of dollars. The look on her parents’ face made Victoria ask how much Adam offered. “Five hundred million dollars,” Nikki stated.

Victoria demanded to know where Adam got off making an offer like that. Victor intended to speak with Adam. Victor said they were all trying to get rid of this bastard. Victoria maintained that they were going to use her plan. Victor countered that Victoria’s plan hadn’t come to fruition. Victoria said Adam didn’t want her plan to succeed, and she contended that it was Victor’s fault Adam was trying to undermine her. Victoria argued that Victor should’ve made it clear that he expected Adam’s full cooperation.

Victoria was sure Ashland wouldn’t take the money. “Why because he’s eternally in love with you?,” Victor asked. Victoria made it clear that she wasn’t going to fall for Ashland’s lies again. She knew Ashland better than her parents did, and she was sure he wouldn’t ever take a bribe or back down from a fight. Nikki asked why Ashland agreed to consider Adam’s offer. Victoria didn’t know, but she guessed time would tell which of them were right. She left.

Sharon and Nick were at Crimson Lights. Sharon said Ashland told her he was going to exonerate himself. She mentioned that Adam came in. Nick wanted to know what the dynamic was like between Ashland and Adam. Sharon didn’t overhear anything. She didn’t want to get involved, so she’d made up an excuse to go in the back, but it looked like Ashland and Adam had an intense conversation. One that seemed like lives depended on whatever they were talking about.

Nick guessed it could’ve been a business meeting since Adam was the temporary CEO of Newman Locke. Nick explained that Adam refused to go along with Victoria’s plan to oust Ashland unless Victor kept him in the big chair. Sharon was taken aback. Nick said it sounded like something the old Adam would do. Nick tried to talk to Adam about how much he’d changed and convince him that it would be a mistake to use Victoria’s situation to this advantage. Sharon asked if Adam listened. Nick didn’t know. She wondered how Victoria was taking it. He said Victoria was distant and not listening. He didn’t think Victoria’s plan was working. He said she was scared and defensive. Sharon thought that was understandable. Nick said Victoria still loved Ashland, and she also knew she couldn’t trust him. He said there was no way to tell what Victoria was going to do. He didn’t even think Victoria knew.

Sharon remembered how worried Nikki and Victor were when Victoria split from Billy and got attacked. They even asked Sharon to help. She assumed this situation might feel even worse for Victor and Nikki. Nick said his parents were all in on the wedding, and he was sent to the dog house for doubting Ashland. Nick was worried Victoria would try and salvage her relationship with Ashland, because that might cause an irreparable rift. Nikki arrived, and Sharon greeted her then went into the back. Nick told Nikki that Sharon saw Adam and Ashland in an intense discussion earlier. Nikki, who was clearly annoyed with Adam, told Nick what his brother did. Nick assumed Ashland went whining to Victoria and said no amount of money would replace her. Nikki said Ashland actually went to Victor to see if it was a bona fide offer. She said Victor pretended the offer was authentic. Nikki was worried that the longer this went on, the more chances Ashland had to charm his way back into Victoria’s heart.

Nick noted that five hundred million was the exact figure that he, Victoria and Abby won in that lawsuit against Victor. He didn’t think it was a coincidence that Adam chose that figure to offer Ashland. Nick thought Adam was trying to impress Victor and show that he could handle things on all front, unlike Victoria. Nikki agreed that Adam was sending the message Victoria was doomed to fail. She said Victoria was furious. He thought Victoria was right to be furious with Adam, because he wasn’t being a team player. Nikki didn’t know if Adam had it in him to be one.

Nick wondered if Adam’s plan, which wasn’t clever or overly complicated, could work. Nikki said it was easy money, if that was what Ashland was looking for. Nikki felt bad for Victoria, who must feel like they didn’t support her. Nick said that Ashland could twist this and make Victoria feel like he was the only one on her side. Nikki added that if Ashland turned down the money, he could frame it like an enormous sacrifice he was making for Victoria. Nick said it was just a ploy. Nick assured Nikki that Victoria would come out stronger. They hugged, and she left.

Nick went to Sharon and told her that Adam went behind the family’s back and put his own plan in motion, giving Ashland a way to play the family against each other. Nick decided to go confront Ashland. Sharon didn’t think that was a good idea. She reminded him he’d just said how wrong it was for Adam to go behind Victoria’s back, and now he was planning to do the same thing. He said it’d make him feel better to confront Ashland. Sharon said this wasn’t about Nick. Sharon told Nick that if he wanted to get involved, he should go to Victoria and offer her his love and support.

Sally walked into Adam’s office. They both knew that this could be a big day for him if Ashland accepted his offer. Adam wasn’t sure if Ashland would reject it though. Sally said anticipation could be exciting if you were waiting with the right person. Adam thought Ashland had to know that this offer was his best option. He didn’t understand why Ashland didn’t jump on it. Sally said Ashland was toying with Adam. Adam was second guessing his impulsive decision to offer Ashland half a billion dollars to leave town. “Telling him that I was representing the Newman family? What the hell was I thinking?,” Adam wondered. Sally said he’d been thinking like a leader. It felt like the right move at the time, but he wondered if he just gave Ashland another card to play.

Sally was sure that Adam would come up with another plan if this current one didn’t work out. She said Adam was brilliant and relentless, a combination that was sexy as hell. He thought that was probably why they got along so well. They shared a deep kiss, and they were still in the midst of it when Victor walked in. Victor glowered at Adam and said they had serious business to discuss. Adam insisted that Sally stay. Victor felt Adam made a reckless move offering that criminal hundreds of millions of dollars. Adam asked why Ashland ran to Victor about the deal. “Because he knows you were lying when you said you had the backing of the family,” Victor stated. Adam asked if Ashland was going to take the deal. Victor asked what difference it made. He wondered if Adam was trying to buy time to figure out where to get that kind of money. Victor asked if Adam had been planning to draw the funds from Newman Locke. Adam said no, because it wouldn’t be appropriate to use company funds for a private matter. Victor demanded to know where Adam was going to get the money. Adam said Victoria brought Ashland into the company, so she should pay. Victor found Adam’s lack of sympathy for his sister appalling.

Victor assumed Sally encouraged Adam to take this path. Adam said it was his idea and his alone. Sally said once she heard about it, she though it was wonderful. Adam was just trying to incentivize Ashland to get out of their lives. Victor snapped that Victoria already had a plan. Adam asked for a show of hands of people who thought the plan would work. Victor yelled at Adam for offering Ashland hundreds of millions of dollars. Sally said that if Ashland didn’t take the deal, there was nothing to argue about. Adam realized Ashland didn’t reject the plan.

Victor wanted to know if Adam understood him. Adam got it loud and clear. Adam explained that he’d believed he was working for the good of the family. Victor ordered Adam not to ever go behind his back and make a deal of this magnitude. Adam maintained that he was trying to help. Victor was adamant that Adam had no right to take this into his own hands. Adam said that when he saw Locke, the idea just came to him, and he ran with it. Sally backed that up, saying that she and Adam never discussed this plan in advance. “I don’t care if you were there or not,” Victor screamed at Sally, while dropping a tablet on the table for emphasis. Victor turned his attention to Adam and yelled that he shouldn’t have made this decision without consulting him and the family. He ordered Adam not to ever do that again. Victor reminded Adam that he’d accused Victoria of rushing into a plan. Adam said that Ashland seemed more intrigued by Adam’s plan than he was by Victoria’s. Adam asked what Ashland said. Victor revealed that Ashland was waiting at the Grand Phoenix. Adam asked if he should go follow up or kill the deal. Victor reiterated that Adam was not to ever make a deal of this magnitude without Victor’s input.

Victor said that Ashland could toy with them – accept the deal, then change his mind. Adam asked if Victor was just going to wait and hope Victoria’s plan worked out. Victor said that Victoria’s plan was a damned good one. Sally said that Ashland had been five steps ahead of Victoria this whole time. Sally wasn’t victim blaming since she also once thought Ashland loved Victoria. Adam said that if Ashland walked away, Adam would have him sign some ironclad legal documents preventing him from reneging on the deal. Victor asked where Adam intended to get the $500,000,000, because it wasn’t going to come from Victoria. Adam stared at Victor. Victor realized Adam expected him to pay. Adam asked how much it was worth to Victor to get Ashalnd out of heir lives.

Adam said that if Victor paid out, he’d be buying Victoria’s freedom, and she’d be able to stop pretending to love Ashland. Adam said that they had to get Ashland out of the company before he made major changes. He said Ashland could get rid of Newman’s management team, promote his own team and sell off divisions to the highest bidder. Victor had already considered all the points Adam was making. He paced around the room for a bit, then he told Adam to go make the deal with Ashland. Victor said he’d supply the money. Adam promised Victor wouldn’t regret this. He and Sally left.

Victoria went to The Grand Phoenix to talk to Ashland. He was willing to do whatever she wanted, but he thought they should do it in private, so she rented a suite. Upstairs, Victoria asked Ashland to tell her that he didn’t take the offer seriously. She wanted him to say he was only trying to make Adam feel confident so he’d let his guard down. Ashland was sorry to say Adam had every reason to feel confident, since he was on track to getting everything he’d ever wanted – to be Victor’s shining star, and to take over for Ashland when he was gone. Victoria was caught off guard when Ashland said he was leaving. Ashland reminded Victoria that he told her he wanted to get out of this place. Victoria said Ashland could see by now that Adam was the one who set him up. She wanted him to tell her he was going to fight. He knew she wanted him to plant evidence to incriminate Adam.

Ashalnd said he and Victoria could no longer continue the life they planned of running Newman Locke side by side and trusting each other implicitly. He said he could still be the man he promised he’d be on the day he got married, though. He said he was selfish – he didn’t just want her love, he wanted her respect, and he knew if he did this thing she was asking of him, he would lose her respect. He wasn’t going to do it. “The answer to lies is not more lies,” he stated. “But it’s all been lies. Hasn’t it? From the very beginning,” Victoria spat.

Victoria said love was blind, but her eyes had been opened. “By your family,” Ashland concluded. “No, by you,” Victoria replied. Victoria said that she knew Ashland was a fighter and he showed no mercy, and so he’d never let anyone set him up or sully his reputation. She confronted him about planning to just going to take a payoff and walk away from the company he built with his wife. She said the only reason he stopped looking for evidence against Adam was that he knew there wasn’t any. “You know that he didn’t set you up. You’re 100% guilty. You have been faking your cancer for months. You falsified records. You bribed the doctors. You conned me into caring about you,” she yelled. She thought that he owed her the truth.

Ashland said Victoria was right about one thing – he was a fighter, but he’d changed what he was fighting for. She didn’t believe he was fighting for her. She noted that he just told her parents he’d consider taking a bribe to leave her. He said what he considered and what he chose to do were not necessarily the same thing. He knew she wouldn’t likely believe anything he said right now. He told her that he didn’t believe her either when she acted like this – so tough and above it all. He knew what she felt in her heart. She said whatever affection she might still have was outweighed by how angry she was with him. “If the situation were reversed – if I found out you were using me, a sick and dying man, to gain control of Locke Communications, I would be livid,” he said. He said he’d feel manipulated, betrayed and used, but it would be impossible for him to stop loving her, because he’d know that no matter how their relationship started, it turned into something real and true and strong. “And I would know that you were in love with me despite your best efforts to cover it up or pretend it away,” Ashland said.

Victoria felt like Ashland was disregarding everything she just said, but he denied it. “A love as strong and real as ours cannot be forced or faked,” Ashland stated. If the shoe were on the other foot, he’d forgive her, because he loved her and he couldn’t ever stop. Victoria had tears in her eyes. She asked what he wanted from her. “The same thing you want from me – the truth,” he replied.

Victoria quietly asked Ashland how he could expect her to forgive him after everything that transpired. She started to walk away, but he took her hand. Just as quietly, he asked her to hear him out. He said that they could start over, thanks to Adam, they’d have the capital they needed to start their next venture. Victoria said Ashland didn’t understand, but he said he did. He told her to picture their happy life together without judgment, suspicion or family rivalries – it would be just the two of them and this crazy perfect love they had. He believed she wanted that every bit as much as he did.

Victor: Sweetheart, please answer your mother’s questions. Are you saying that, after all the betrayal and all the lies, you still feel love for ashland locke?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Do I love him? Or do I hate him? I mean, does it really matter?

Nick: Yeah. It does. We need to know if you have cut ties with ashland. I’m very concerned about the emotional toll this has taken on you. If you still have feelings for him, it’s gonna be much, much worse.

Victoria: Yes, nicholas, the feelings that I had for ashland were very strong, and they are not simply gonna go away overnight, even after finding out that he’s been lying to me for months.

Nick: Not just lying.

Victoria: I know what he’s done, nick. But what I’m saying is, whatever residual emotion there is left in my heart, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the crimes that he’s committed against me and this family. What matters is this plan to get him out of our lives and out of our company.

Nikki: But, darling, the plan seems to be falling apart.

Victor: Are you saying locke is having second thoughts?

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Now he doesn’t know if he wants to set adam up. Even though adam agreed to go along with it, ashland may not follow through.

Victor: Are you telling me that this is all off the rail now, this whole plan?

Sally: Thank you.

[ Sighs ]

Ashland: [ Sighs ] You have my attention.

Adam: Huh. Well, I would hope so. Half a billion dollars is, uh, hard to ignore. All you have to do is walk away from victoria and newman/locke.

Ashland: Well, I’m not exactly strapped for cash, but, uh, that is a substantial amount of money.

Adam: It’s enough to go anywhere that is not genoa city. You know, you could buy yourself a private island, buy a business, rebuild your empire. You could build a rocket and blast yourself into space. I don’t really care. But most importantly, you would get a drama-free exit with no questions asked.

Ashley: Are you spying on the neighbors?

Traci: [ Laughs ] No!

[ Laughs ]

Ashley: You know, seeing you like this, traci, reminds me when we were little. Daddy would go on business trips, and the day he was returning home, you would be here all day long, waiting for him to walk through that door. Do you remember that?

Traci: I remember vividly. I just — I just loved it when he came home from a trip. It just felt better when he was here with us, you know? Safer.

Ashley: Yeah. Plus, he always brought us presents from wherever he’d been, right?

Traci: Yeah. That helped.

Ashley: And here you are all these years later standing here and waiting for jack in the exact same spot.

Traci: Well, I just want to hear about los angeles. And I want to hear what happened with his granddaughter, allie. He’ll be here any minute.

Ashley: Maybe he’ll bring you a present.

Traci: Oh, that would be nice!

[ Laughs ] I just — I really hope the trip went the way he wanted it to.

Ashley: Me too.

Traci: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Thank you. It’s so chivalrous of you to bring in my bag. Um, you don’t need to.

Jack: I just wanted to make sure you got settled in.

Phyllis: Thank you. I wish there was something i could do for you.

Jack: Are you joking? You have been such a help. It feels like you’ve been by my side for weeks now.

Phyllis: You know what i mean. I wish there was something i could do for you right this moment.

Jack: Can you call kyle and tell him his mother’s actually alive and wants to be part of his life now?

Phyllis: Well, I’m gonna stay away from that. In fact, I don’t even want to talk to summer right now. I’m afraid it’ll slip.

Jack: No, I have to be the one to tell him. Boy, am I not looking forward to that conversation.

Phyllis: No, but you have to do it before diane does. I mean —

Jack: Yeah, I just don’t know how he’s gonna react. Never in a million years did i imagine I would be in this situation. Poor kyle.

Jack: The whole situation is just a mess.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Jack: It’s not just kyle’s reaction. Allie was dragged into the middle of this. That trip was supposed to be about me spending time with her, getting to know her. The whole thing was ruined by diane’s intrusion.

Phyllis: Yeah. Diane is a master manipulator. That’s for sure. Hey, I don’t want to talk about her. Let’s talk about allie. That was a good trip. I think you made progress with her. I really do. She’s a very smart, capable girl. I think that, uh, you made a real connection. That’s what I think. And there’s nothing that diane can say or do to ruin that.

Jack: Thank you for keeping things positive. When did you become a cockeyed optimist?

Phyllis: Just calling it like I see it.

[ Cellphone buzzes ]

Jack: Oh. Bear with me. It’s billy. He wants to know how my trip went. Well, I guess I have to break the news to all of my siblings at the same time. Wish me luck. I’m about to blow up a good old-fashioned abbott family meeting.

Victoria: Ashland was adamant that he didn’t want me to cross an ethical line. He felt that if — if I helped him to frame adam, it would corrupt me and there would be no coming back from that. He also suggested that the two of us run away together.

Victor: He’s testing you. He’s suspicious. He wants to know you’re on his side.

Nikki: That’s what I thought, too. He’s no dummy.

Nick: By that, you mean he is sneaky and a criminal.

Victor: Of course he is. We don’t know what he’s gonna do.

Nick: Well, he may catch on to what we’re up to.

Victor: If he even gets a hint of our plan, we need to rethink it.

Nick: I agree. The more I think about it, the more reservations I have.

Nikki: What we need to be concerned about is —

Victoria: I can handle myself. I can handle ashland. This plan is solid. I chose to bring you all in on it. I trusted you to help me. I just told you how committed i am to seeing it through, and you still don’t trust me.

Ashland: See, I think accepting a deal like this, as generous as it may seem, uh, may appear to be an admission of guilt.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

[ Laughs ] Are you still playing this game?

Ashland: What game is that?

Adam: The one where we all pretend like you’re still innocent. Come on. Get over yourself, locke. There’s enough evidence out there. You never had cancer. You preyed on victoria’s emotions to get your hands on my family’s company. And I don’t care about that. I’m not judging. My past is littered with similar schemes, okay? You saw an angle. You played it. Good for you. But now it’s over. Make it easy on yourself. Get paid. Get out of this. With your reputation intact.

Ashland: You make it sound like it’s a generous offer and that you care about your sister, but this is really all about your own self-interest, isn’t it?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] I have the family’s interest at heart.

Ashland: Yeah, but if you get me out of the picture, then you can set your sights on victoria and you can make your move to be ceo of the company.

Adam: Look, I don’t think that my motives should play a role in your decision.

Ashland: Fair enough. $500 million. And you claim you’re representing victor and the family.

Adam: That’s right.

Ashland: How do I know that’s true? Does victor even know you’re making this offer?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] (Dramatic music)

Victor: Sweetheart, this is not about distrusting you. But you’ve got to realize that ashland locke is backpedaling from your plan because he is suspicious.

Victoria: Or maybe he is seriously conflicted. Maybe it’s possible to be this ruthless and to also love me and want to protect me. The two of those ideas are not mutually exclusive.

Victor: Well…

[ Sighs ] Maybe you’re right. It’s possible.

Victoria: That’s very ironic, coming from you.

Victor: What do you mean by that?

Nikki: She is comparing the dynamic she has with ashland to what you and I have. Now, you can be ruthless, yet you love me. You always want to protect me. And I have always loved you, even at your worst. And vice versa. But I can’t bring myself to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Victor: Sweetheart, the situations are different.

Victoria: The hell they are.

Victor: Ashland locke is a complete narcissist. That beautiful wedding in tuscany — if he had been a man, he would have come to you and told you about his past, about his lies! He would have begged you for forgiveness.

Nick: Or at least before he signed that contract to be co-ceo.

Victor: He used you, sweetheart. I hate to say this. He would have tossed you away as soon as he thought he had benefited enough. Trust me, I’m gonna make that bastard pay for the pain he has caused you. But you’ve seen enough now. You’ve seen what he has done. Don’t question your plan now.

Adam: You give me more credit than I deserve. I mean, you really think I have the, uh, temerity and the guts to make a deal like this without my father’s approval?

Ashland: Oh, I wouldn’t put anything past you. But you’re probably right. $500 million does cross a line. Victor would have to sign off on that. I think the amount, though… is really interesting, don’t you? I mean, if your father chose that number, that’s a bit cruel, don’t you think?

Adam: No, I’d say it’s quite generous, actually.

Ashland: Oh, no, no, I don’t mean cruel toward me. Toward you. I mean, I happen to know that $500 million is exactly the amount of money your father was forced to pay his other children when they sued him over their trusts. Victoria, nick, even abby. But not you.

Adam: Well, uh, if you did your research properly, you would know that, um, I was not a part of that lawsuit.

Ashland: Well, no, but it still seems unfair, don’t you think? I mean, you never got that kind of money from your father.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: It’s almost as if he was saying to you that you weren’t in the same league as his other children, as your siblings. That’s got to hurt.

Adam: Yeah. That was a nice try. Really. But I’m doing just fine.

Ashland: Okay. Still, though, to have to prove yourself over and over and over again to the old man — that has to be exhausting.

Adam: Yeah. My father and I are, uh, in a great place, actually. And as for the amount, which he and I agreed on, uh, I wouldn’t over-analyze it. We just were looking for the exact number necessary to get you out of our lives — and not a penny more.

Billy: Jack said to meet him here and he’ll fill us in when he arrives.

Traci: Fill us in on what? I mean, he never said anything to me.

Billy: Patience, darling. He’s on his way.

Ashley: Traci’s very anxious to welcome a new member into our family, obviously.

Traci: I am. It’s so exciting. I just — I just hope that jack and allie were able to find ways to forge a new connection.

[ Door opens ] Oh!

Jack: Oh, good, you’re all here.

Billy: Hey.

Traci: Jack. How did it go? Does allie want to go ahead with the relationship? When are we gonna get to meet her?

Billy: Just so you know, uh, traci’s already photoshopped her into our family portrait.

Traci: If I knew anything about how to do that, I would have.

Ashley: How are you? How’d it go?

Jack: First let me say this. It is so good to see these three faces in this house. We don’t do this enough. We all know how important family is. This should be a regular occurrence.

Traci: That is a wonderful idea, and I agree.

Billy: We all agree, but you’re stalling. What’s going on?

Jack: Allie. Have a seat.

Traci: Okay.

Jack: Allie is lovely. She’s pretty. She’s bright. She’s curious. She’s thoughtful. She reminded me of keemo from time to time.

Traci: Oh, that’s so nice.

Jack: But more than anything, she reminded me of you.

Ashley: Me?

Jack: Yes. Clear-eyed, critical-thinking. She’s working on her master’s in chemical engineering. I know how skeptical you have been about this whole situation. There’s someone else who’s even more skeptical — allie. I think you two are gonna hit it off when you finally meet.

Traci: Oh, I like the sound of that. So, when is she coming to visit?

Jack: Hopefully very soon. First I need to tell you all about something else that happened in los angeles.

Ashley: What is it?

Traci: Uh-oh. You look a little unsettled.

Jack: There’s no easy way to say this, no simple way to prepare you.

Ashley: Okay. What happened?

Jack: I learned the identity of the mysterious texter, the person who’d been luring me out to los angeles to keemo’s house. In fact, she ultimately bought keemo’s house.

Traci: Wait, “she”?

Jack: She. No matter who we considered, i never allowed for this possibility because it wasn’t possible.

Ashley: Jack, what are you talking about? Who is she?

Jack: Diane jenkins. She’s alive. One fateful morning,

Adam: Well, I think we covered everything. Except, of course, a deadline.

Ashland: Why does there have to be a deadline?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Because we’re not gonna drag this out, okay? This is a one-time offer. You can take it, or you can leave it, but it expires today.

Ashland: It’s a lot to consider. What if I need more time?

Adam: You have one hour, okay? If you agree to the deal, the money will be wired into an account of your choosing tomorrow morning. And if not…good luck surviving what comes next.

Nick: Vick, we’re all just trying to look out for you.

Nikki: It may seem heavy-handed.

Victoria: “Seems”? It is heavy-handed.

Nikki: We don’t want you to feel attacked. We just need to get through to you.

Victoria: I don’t appreciate being told how to feel.

Nick: But you still don’t have affection for this guy, right?

Victoria: Oh, just give me some time to think about it, nicholas. It seems like every time we talk, it always comes back to your lack of faith in my ability to make good decisions.

Nikki: Honey, it’s just that we want to make sure you have a clear view of the situation.

Victoria: I just need time. I need some time right now away from all of you to think about this.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Amanda: Well, hello.

Phyllis: Hey. How are you? Are you meeting somebody here?

Amanda: Uh, yeah. Yeah, I’m here to see someone very important, actually.

Phyllis: Who?

Amanda: You.

Phyllis: Me?

Amanda: Yes.

Phyllis: Oh.

Amanda: Yeah, and I came by yesterday, and someone told me that you were out of town.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, I went to L.A.

Amanda: [ Gasps ] You did?

Phyllis: Yeah, jack went to california, and I — I flew there to meet him.

Amanda: Okay. Well, hopefully you got to do something fun this time around. Sightseeing? The beach?

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] No, this trip definitely was not fun. Um, jack is dealing with the whole, you know, death of his son, keemo, and… yeah, it was one revelation after the other.

Amanda: I’m sorry. You know I just went through that same drama with my family, so I know how intense it can be.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, “intense” doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Billy: I’m sorry. Please tell me that this is some kind of sick joke.

Jack: Not at all.

Traci: Okay, is possible that you only think diane’s alive? Maybe the texter’s messing with with your head.

Jack: Diane is alive. I saw her. I talked to her more than once.

Billy: How — how is that possible? They found her body.

Ashley: This is insane.

Traci: O-okay, let’s focus on what’s important. Diane, who miraculously came back from the dead after all these years, knew that keemo passed away and knew of the existence of allie?

Jack: Yes, that’s right.

Traci: So she’s gonna take this information and try to insinuate herself back into your life.

Jack: That’s not the way she would put it.

Ashley: Well, of course not because she could rationalize any horrible thing she’s ever done.

Jack: She was hoping that by bringing me and allie together, she could gain my forgiveness, at least enough forgiveness that I would allow her to re-establish a relationship with kyle.

Traci: Oh, no. Poor kyle.

Billy: And let me guess — she wants to be a mother again after all these years?

Ashley: You’re not gonna let that happen.

Jack: I was as outraged as you are by her demands. I know this is a lot to take in, and I’m asking you to keep this between us. I told you this because i haven’t told kyle yet, and i have to tell him soon.

Traci: Are you sure?

Jack: His mother’s alive. I can’t keep that from him. Look, and this has to be told in person. I can’t do this over the phone. So I’ve encouraged him to come here to genoa city in the next couple of weeks and I will tell him then.

Traci: But, jack, what is this gonna do to him, though? He grieved and suffered when she died. How could she put him through this?

Ashley: Because she’s inherently selfish.

Billy: Okay, can we go back to the beginning? How is this woman not dead?

Jack: You’re not gonna believe this.

Ashley: You know, when it comes to diane, I’d believe just about anything. So, please tell us — how did this bitch come back into our lives? What can I du with less asthma?

Jack: She knew the whole town hated her, she felt the walls closing in, and she faked her own death.

Billy: By herself?

Jack: With the help of deacon sharpe.

Traci: No way.

Billy: So, what has she been doing after all these years?

Jack: Well, she claims she’s been rehabilitating herself. She’s turned her life around. She’s looking at a happier, healthier future.

Ashley: Please. You didn’t buy any of that.

Jack: Not for one second.

Ashley: Thank god.

Jack: Everything you’re feeling — the anger, the shock, the outrage — I felt tenfold when I saw her face-to-face. And I haven’t forgotten one thing she did to me. The lies, the games, using kyle’s custody as a weapon. And, ashley, I have not forgotten what she did to you.

Ashley: Where do I even start? She slept with my fiancé. She blackmailed me. What she did to my daughter. And then her so-called death. We were all turned into suspects. Our lives were turned completely upside down the entire time she was alive. Even you hate her, and you try to think the best of everybody.

Traci: Well, she takes pleasure in wreaking havoc.

Ashley: She does. I just wish she’d crawl back under that rock she climbed out from under.

Billy: Well, she’s not going to, so please tell me you have a plan on how to deal with her — because she is a potential threat to half of this town. What do you think she’s gonna do next?

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Well, it’s probably my fault she took off. I was just trying to be supportive, but I probably came on too strong.

Nikki: Darling, you were coming from a good place. But that didn’t make it any easier for her.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Do you think we were too tough on her?

Nikki: We said what needed to be said.

Nick: I just wish she would have received it better, you know? I got to go. Uh, call me if anything comes up?

Victor: Okay, son.

Nikki: Alright.

[ Door closes ]

Nikki: Well, I’m gonna stay. I have a little work to do. I have a feeling victoria will be back sooner rather than later.

Victor: I’ll stick around, okay?

Nikki: Good. I think, when she has a chance to process everything, she’ll calm down.

Victor: [ Sighs ] You mean and realize that we were right?

Nikki: Oh, well, I don’t know about that. But hopefully we can all have a civil conversation. And we’ll take it from there. Together.

Victor: Yeah.

Sally: Wait. What? A half a billion dollars, and ashland didn’t say yes immediately?

Adam: Uh, well, he didn’t turn it down immediately, either, which suggests he is considering it.

Sally: So, you think he’s just gonna take the money and run?

Adam: He should. I mean, I made quite a strong case. But, uh, nothing’s for certain until I hear from him.

Sally: Well, I hope you get the answer that you want. But either way, for what it’s worth, I think you handled it masterfully.

Adam: Well, it’s worth a lot.

Sally: I have another question.

Adam: Oh, look who’s here.

Sally: Do you want to go somewhere else? I mean, in case you’re not in the mood to deal with her?

Adam: No, no, no. It’s okay. I, um — I have to talk to her for a moment. Do you, uh, want to get us a table?

Sally: Yeah.

Adam: So, how is the plan coming along? Any indication that ashland’s gonna make another move?

Victoria: You sound concerned.

Adam: Uh, well, I am a little bit. No one’s hacked into my computer today to plant fake evidence. So, if ashland is planning on committing a criminal conspiracy, he’s moving at a snail’s pace.

Victoria: I don’t really want to get into it, but there may be a change in plans. Motrin works fast to stop pain where it starts.

Ashley: Jack, clearly you see that her leading you to allie is just another one of diane’s games.

Jack: She claims it isn’T.

Ashley: Oh, jack.

Jack: She claims that she honestly wants to make amends with kyle. Look, my first instinct was to say, “hell, no.” To do what I could to protect kyle from any more pain. But phyllis helped me realize… that it’s kyle’s choice to decide whether she’s gonna be in his life or not.

Ashley: Phyllis? You told phyllis all this before you told your own family?

Jack: Phyllis was with me in los angeles, yeah.

Ashley: Why?

Jack: Because she decided to fly out to support me, knowing it might be a little difficult with allie.

Ashley: Well, that was nice of her.

Jack: Yes, it was, and I’m glad she did because I’ve been spinning out of control ever since diane showed up. No. She kept me grounded. And that’s exactly what i needed.

Amanda: So, you just flew to california because jack asked you to?

Phyllis: Uh, I offered.

Amanda: So, a gesture like that — it feels like there is more than just friendship going on.

Phyllis: You’re interpreting gestures now, are you?

Amanda: Phyllis, I’m just saying that, you know, clearly your connection with jack is getting a little deeper.

Phyllis: You know, this trip… it’s not what you think.

Amanda: You don’t know what i think.

Phyllis: Yeah, I do know what you think because it’s what you’ve been thinking all along. Listen, um, what jack is going through right now is — is quite profound. And, um, I was sort of there as his advisor, a voice of reason.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Well, that doesn’t sound like you at all, phyllis.

Phyllis: Yeah, I know. On this trip, I really had to push against my basic instinct. Trust me.

Amanda: Well, if that doesn’t show how much you care about jack, I don’t know what does.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Just so there’s no misunderstanding… jack and I are just friends. Really. Especially now. What he needs is a friend. And what I need is a friend.

Amanda: Okay. Yes. You’ve convinced me, alright? But as your friend in a very different way than jack, I’m thinking that there is something very important that we must do.

Adam: What do you mean, there’s been a change in plans?

Victoria: You’ll know when you need to.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You really are a piece of work. I have put myself at risk to try to help you, and you can’t even do the bare minimum to keep me informed? It’s like I’m a lesser being than you, except when you need something from me.

Victoria: Would you please calm down.

Adam: Okay. Obviously, your plan didn’t work. You screwed it up, didn’t you?

Victoria: Not at all.

Adam: I told dad that this was not gonna work. There was too many moving parts. I knew it. Let me guess. Ashland saw through your deception and he’s backing off. You can’t try to control the world. It kind of sucks to find that out, doesn’t it?

Victoria: I have accomplished more than you’ll ever dream of.

Adam: Maybe because, uh, i haven’t been given the opportunity. Oh, you’ve been given plenty of chances, adam, and you’ve failed every time. Because you are who you are.

Ashland: Oh.

Nikki: Uh, victoria just stepped out. We’re not sure for how long.

Ashland: That’s fine. In fact, I’m, uh, glad to see you both here, especially you, victor.

Victor: Why is that?

Ashland: I was hoping we could discuss the offer adam just made.

Victor: What’s there to discuss?

Ashland: Well, primarily, I’d like to know if it was legit.

Victor: Why wouldn’t it be legit?

Ashland: It’s a great deal of money.

Victor: So?

Ashland: You must really want me out of here.

Victor: I do, indeed. The amount seemed appropriate.

Ashland: Maybe. But the fact that it came from adam seemed cold.

Victor: Really? Why?

Ashland: The amount. You see, I happen to know that that’s the exact same number that you were forced to hand over to each of your children except adam. So he was forced to relive that pain all over again.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Ashland: Which I thought was heartless on your part.

Victor: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: How exactly do you rationalize putting your own son in that position?

Victor: How the hell do you dare come in here and ask me about my relationship with my son, hmm? Question is, are you willing to accept the offer of $500 million and get the hell out of town?

Lean cuisine.

Adam: Victoria was clearly on the defensive, refusing to admit that she blew it with ashland. Her plan is a mess.

Sally: It’s a dumpster fire.

Adam: Mm-hmm. It just validates, uh, my decision to take matters into my own hands and, uh, create an alternative plan.

Sally: Right. But here’s what I was about to ask you before we saw victoria earlier. How is your dad gonna react to you offering ashland a huge amount of money without consulting with him first?

Adam: If ashland takes the deal and he leaves town, my dad will be fine with it. And if he turns it down… he doesn’t even need to know.

Ashland: I have not yet decided if I’m going to take this offer or not. One mustn’t rush into a decision of this magnitude. There’s so many angles to consider. I did think it was possible that adam was acting on his own.

Victor: You think he would agree to that sum of money without my permission?

Ashland: Funny. That’s exactly what he said. Maybe this offer is real. But there was a moment when you seemed to hesitate, as if i caught you off guard.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] You surmise correctly. I was stunned by your gall, your unmitigated gall, to walk into this office knowing full well that we are all aware of what you have done.

[ Door opens ]

Victoria: What’s going on here?

Ashland: A negotiation.

Victoria: What are you talking about?

Ashland: Well, adam — and perhaps your father — have just made me an offer of a whole lot of money to walk away from everything I have here in genoa city, including you. What do you think? Should I take the deal and go? Maybe I put you through enough pain. Maybe it’s time to put it to an end. Maybe we should just both move on.

Traci: “Grounded” is not usually a word I would use to describe phyllis, but I’m very glad that she was there to help you during these very horrible circumstances.

Jack: Phyllis was a life-saver. And she’s right about being honest with kyle. He deserves to know the truth. And if I don’t tell him, diane’s going to. She came this close to calling him. Thank god I talked her out of it, convinced her that I should be the one to tell him.

Ashley: Well, how incredibly generous of her. She doesn’t want to traumatize her son, so she’ll just leave it to you.

Jack: I am concerned how he’s gonna react, though. But if I tell him, I can warn him about diane, about the dark side of his mother that I tried so hard to keep from him when we all thought she was dead.

Traci: What if he lets her back in his life?

Jack: That’s his prerogative. All I can do is give him the facts, all of the facts. Look, he read about her in

restless style and all the things people said about her. There’s so much more to know. And, look, reading about her behavior and being affected by it is quite a different thing. We all know that.

Billy: Okay, so, you tell him, he’s gonna want to see her. Does that mean she’s coming back to town?

Ashley: No. You can’t let her come back to genoa city, jack. You have to know the ramifications that her presence would have.

Jack: I am well aware of the number of lives that will be impacted by this. Right now, I am concerned about what’s gonna happen to kyle and summer and harrison if diane finds her way back into kyle’s life.

Phyllis: What do you think we ought to do?

Amanda: A spa day. Yes, massages, facials, some time in the sauna. We can have some drinks while we get our nails done.

Phyllis: Okay. That’s tempting.

Amanda: Isn’t it?

Phyllis: Yeah.

Amanda: Come on.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] I have so much work to catch up on.

Amanda: Okay, phyllis, honestly, were you even expecting to be back today?

Phyllis: No.

Amanda: Okay. So then today is a bonus day. So, if there is nothing urgent, then what better way to pamper yourself after a very long flight than relaxing with your favorite person in the whole wide world?

Phyllis: Okay. Oh, well, if you put it that way, let’s do it. Let’s go.

Amanda: [ Laughs ] Oh, wait. Shoot. Um, do you think we’ll be able to get an appointment?

Phyllis: Oh, I think I can work that out.

Amanda: Yeah?

[ Laughs ]

Phyllis: Uh, if anybody wants me, I’ll be in the spa.

Amanda: Let’s go!

Diane: Hi. I’m taylor jenson. I’m here to check in.

[ Sighs ] I’ll be staying her a while.

Ashland tells Victor he will be at the Grand Phoenix waiting for Adam so they can discuss terms of a deal. Victor is extremely angry at Adam for not following the plan and offering Ashland an exorbitant amount of money to leave town. Victor makes it clear that Adam is never to do anything without discussing it with him first and then he tells him to go meet with Ashland.

Ashland tells Victoria that if the shoe were on the other foot and someone had accused her of faking an illness, he would forgive her because above all else, no matter how they started their relationship, they love each other.

Ashland wants to take Adam’s offer and make a fresh start and he asks Victoria to come with him.

Victoria: Ashland?

Ashland: Hello, my darling.

Victoria: You were up and out of the house so early this morning. Is everything alright?

Ashland: I’m fine.

Victoria: I’m surprised you’re here. I just stopped by to tie up some loose ends before our temporary CEO takes over. So, have you had a chance to mull over our next steps? Do you have any plan that you want to share with me yet?

Ashland: Uh…I’ve actually been thinking quite a bit about what to do next. [ Sighs ]

Victoria: And?

Ashland: I’m beginning to have second thoughts.

Victor: Hey. I thought I’d find you here.

[ Door closes ]

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Hey.

Victor: So, any additional evidence that Ashland is moving forward with his plan?

Adam: Not since he broke in and I let him get through my computer’s firewall. There’s no indication he planted any files on my computer. Have you heard anything more from Victoria?

Victor: No. I haven’t.

Adam: Well, then how do we know that the plan is definitely still on? Maybe she called it off.

Victor: No. It is still on.

Adam: Well, then where are we in the scheme of things? Are we in the beginning stages? How much warning am I gonna get when things move along? And what should I be expecting when I get busted for framing Ashland? ‘Cause I have a kid to look out for. What am I supposed to tell Connor? And more importantly, the really big one, is do you honestly believe that this is the smartest move to make?

Sharon: I can just see the wedding invitation now — “Sharon Rosales is honored to invite you to the wedding of her daughter, Mariah Copeland, to the love of her life, Tessa Porter… on Friday the 13th of May. The brides will get married standing under a ladder to thumb their nose at superstition.”

Nick: You know, I was, uh — I don’t know. I thought it was a little weird, the Friday the 13th thing, to start, but I’m coming around to it. It’ll be fun and unique.

Sharon: It’ll definitely give people something to talk about. I’m just glad the wedding isn’t this month.

Nick: I know we don’t have a lot of time, but it’ll all work out.

Sharon: How can you be so calm? I mean, this ’70s theme — that’s — ’70s glam is a lot of work, you know? I know that Noah came up with a beautiful design plan, but now we have to figure out how to build it. They’re talking about doing it in a theater. Those are booked months, if not a year, in advance. Will there be a rehearsal dinner? Hey, you know what we need?

Nick: What?

Sharon: We need to have daily meetings about this from now up until the night of the wedding. That’ll give us a fraction of the amount of time we need to actually do this right. Why did I let Mariah and Tessa go without nailing some of this down?

Victoria: Second thoughts about what? Are you feeling okay? I’m really worried about you after that spell that you had recently.

Ashland: No. Really. I’m fine. I am. And when I — [ Clears throat ] When I said “second thoughts,” I was referring to our trip to Tuscany.

Victoria: Well, you were the one who made the decision to cancel it.

Ashland: I know, and I stand by that decision. It’s definitely the smartest move. It’ll give us time to prove that Adam is the one who’s been setting me up.

Victoria: Then what’s the problem?

Ashland: I was just looking forward to having time alone with you, away from the sneering eyes and the false accusations.

Victoria: Also known as a typical Newman family dinner.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] That’s funny. I imagine growing up with that family you had to develop a complex sense of humor. But you’re not fooling me. I can see the toll this has taken on you.

Victoria: We’ll keep each other strong.

Ashland: Hey, I have the skin of a woolly mammoth.

Victoria: That is not true.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] See, you only say that because you know me better than anyone ever has. Okay. Alright. Yes, this is starting to wear me down a bit. I’m just sorry that we missed the opportunity to, um — to regroup, to reconnect.

Victoria: So true. And Italy is so beautiful this time of year. There’s so much fog. It covers everything like a thick blanket. You can lose yourself.

Ashland: We will get back to Tuscany eventually. But until that day, I…

Victoria: We’ll create an oasis for ourselves and make ourselves untouchable while we find proof that Adam is behind all of this.

Ashland: Once we clear my name… and the truth comes to light.

Victoria: Is there something else that you want to tell me?

Nick: Sharon, if Tessa and Mariah think they can pull the 13th off and it’s the date they really, really want, then we can make it work.

Sharon: Oh. Can we?

Nick: [ Chuckles ] I’m just saying, you got a lot of people around here who are willing to jump in and help.

Sharon: You know what? You’re right. I should give you a to-do list. How about you scour the entire Midwest for authentic ’70s decor? I’m talking wall coverings, chairs that somewhat match with Noah’s design plan, and then accumulate as much of it as you can, like enough to fill a theater.

Nick: Fine. Got it covered. What else you got?

Sharon: Next is — tell me what’s wrong.

Nick: I guess I am, uh, worried about Victoria and Ashland. Uh, Vick says she has a plan to get him out of her life. She finally told us all what it is.

Sharon: Doesn’t sound like you’re too impressed with her plan.

Nick: I just didn’t want to bring it up, you know, while everyone was talking about Mariah’s wedding plans.

Sharon: Oh, the last thing that Mariah and Tessa need to hear about right now is a marriage that was entirely based on a lie.

Nick: Yeah, all the talk about, you know, dresses and venues — it’s a good diversion.

Sharon: But now that everyone’s gone?

Nick: All my questions and concerns and my very strong desire to rip Locke apart have come right back.

Sharon: Would it help you to talk through Victoria’s plan?

Nick: Uh… I really think it’s best if you don’t know what it is. I will say that Victoria’s plan makes her complicit, and I think that crosses a line.

Ashland: If I had known the universe was saving you for me, I would have lived an entirely different life, a life so wholesome that no false accusation against me would ever stick.

Victoria: You know it’s too late for regrets now.

Ashland: You have temporarily sacrificed the job you’ve worked your entire life for to stand by me. I just wish there was some way I could think of to make that up to you.

Victoria: No, I don’t want you to jump through hoops for me.

Ashland: Victoria —

Victoria: This is my choice. I feel very good about it.

Ashland: I never thought I could love anyone as deeply as I love you. And that took me by surprise. I hate the feeling that one day that could all just fall away.

Victoria: It won’t.

Ashland: No, I know. I know. We’ve talked about this before. It’s been on my mind ever since I’ve had to face the possibility that you — you could just walk away from me if you believe those lies.

Victoria: You make it sound like you’re afraid that might actually happen. Are you doubting our plan now?

Ashland: No, I-I believe we can pull it off. The question is, are we going about it the right way?

Victoria: What do you mean?

Ashland: I snuck into Adam’s office while you were talking to your family.

Victoria: You did?

Ashland: I managed to get into his computer. I was looking for evidence that he’s the one who framed me.

Victoria: I didn’t realize you had already done something so bold. What did you find?

Ashland: Nothing that would implicate Adam as the one who’s behind the lies.

Victoria: No, of course not, because Adam is too smart to leave a digital trail on his work laptop. This is personal for him. We have to dig deeper.

Ashland: Yeah, that’s the thing. I’m not sure I want to dig deeper.

Victoria: Will it take more time and extra manpower? Absolutely. I mean, I never said that it was going to be easy, but trust me, we’re gonna uncover Adam’s mistakes. There’s got to be evidence somewhere.

Ashland: When I was in Adam’s office, I heard Adam and Sally’s voice outside the door.

Victoria: Oh, my god. Did they catch you?

Ashland: No. For a minute, I thought they might, but it hit me — I was behaving like some lowlife criminal. And I… I mean, yes, I’ve done things like that in my past, but I put that man behind me when I fell in love with you. And yet there he was, back again, up to his old tricks. And I hate myself for it.

Victoria: Oh, Ashland. I am so sorry.

Ashland: And now I’m realizing that the only way for our plan to work is for us to go further down that path. And I’m afraid it will destroy our love for good.

Victor: I thought we were all on the same page. Are you now questioning the details of Victoria’s plan?

Adam: Am I not allowed to do that? Isn’t this entire thing revolved around me?

Victor: Son, Ashland Locke has taken the bait, okay? He’ll now come up with some proof that you’re out to get him.

Adam: Right, which everyone will believe because, hey, it’s Adam.

Victor: But we all know it’s a charade, okay? He will come up with some evidence that you’re out to destroy him. Then we all say we are sorry, but we ask him for evidence. He will then plant that evidence in your computer.

Adam: And maybe he will figure it out. I mean, the guy has managed to outwit us many of times.

Victor: We will catch him red-handed, which will give me reason to nullify his contract with Newman/Locke, and he’ll be out.

Adam: Yeah. Sounds so simple.

Victor: And Victoria will be free of that man. You will emerge from all of this unscathed. Now, are you having doubts about your role in this whole thing?

Adam: Look, I understand the plan. And I will stick to my role. The black sheep. But I’m just getting a little tired of always having to prove what a team player I am. Hell, it was my idea to improve Victoria’s plan by me staying on as temporary CEO, and then you can pretend to fire me when Ashland plants and then find the evidence. All of this — it sounds great on paper, right? But if you actually think about it, Victoria’s idea is dependent on far too many details. There’s a ton of potential pitfalls, and I just want to make sure that you’ve considered all the flaws.

Victor: Such as?

Adam: First of all, she was inspired by the plan to trick me into publishing disparaging articles about Billy’s drinking and his gambling. It was a scheme so weak that, when she found out about it, she shut it down.

Victor: So what? She may now have come up with a plan that’ll actually work.

Adam: Okay, look, my biggest issue is this entire thing hinges on Ashland planting faked evidence. And I gave him the opportunity to do that, and he didn’t take it. So, possibly he knows that I gave him access to the computer.

Victor: Son, Ashland’s days at our family business are numbered, one way or the other. So, uh, you can stop worrying about Newman/Locke.

Adam: Yeah. Um, well, about that, I think that we should talk about it.

Victor: I give you my word, Adam, that after all this has been said and done, you will return to your position at Newman Media and Victoria will resume the role as sole CEO of Newman Enterprises.

Adam: I will play my part, as agreed.

Victor: Good.

Adam: But I just think you’re putting way too much faith into a half-baked plan that Ashland might already see right through. And if that’s the case, while we’re distracted, thinking that we’ve got everything under control and the plan is working, he’s out there plotting his next move.

Victor: Let him. It’s a chess game. I’m good at it. Very good at it.

Victoria: Nothing about this plan is gonna damage our relationship. The two of us fighting this injustice together — it’s only gonna make us stronger.

Ashland: And I want to believe that, but everything that’s happened, everything that is about to happen could fundamentally change what we have together. Are we about to cross a line to protect our love, only to destroy it in the end?

Victoria: Do you still believe that Adam is the one framing you?

Ashland: Yes, I do. You said it yourself. He’s the most obvious culprit. But we didn’t find any proof.

Victoria: That’s because he’s really good at covering his tracks.

Ashland: Yes, but time is of the essence here, which means we’re going to have to fabricate proof. We are gonna have to plant evidence for this — for this plan to work. Do you understand that? [ Sighs ] So far, we’ve been focused on proving that Adam is the one who’s trying to set me up here, right? But now I’m seeing the bigger picture. Now I’m seeing what has to happen, what we have to do. And I can’t in good conscience ask you to be a part of that.

Victoria: That is not your call.

Ashland: I’m gonna ask you again. Do you understand what we are about to do? We are about to embark on a scheme to defraud, exactly the same thing that your family is accusing me of doing, and that lie almost cost me your trust and your love. Now, as far as I know, unless you’re keeping something from me, you’ve never been an active participant in anything like this.

Victoria: Well, sometimes you have to bend the rules.

Ashland: I’m not talking about business gamesmanship here. This is entirely different.

Victoria: I agreed to stand by while you and my father and Adam decided to turn the tables on Billy.

Ashland: Yes, but you insisted on staying out of that loop. You said no details.

Victoria: Because I didn’t want to get involved.

Ashland: So, why are you willing to do this now?

Sharon: The way you’re talking about Victoria’s plan, it sounds like you’re worried for her safety.

Nick: I am. You know, I’m relieved that she doesn’t seem to be believing any of Ashland’s claims and that she wants to get him out of her life. But a lot could go wrong.

Sharon: He is just despicable. You know, it’s bad enough that he lied about being sick, but then to use a fake diagnosis as a power grab?

Nick: I knew he was trouble from the first moment I met him.

Sharon: Makes me wonder what else he’ll do to get what he wants.

Nick: Every time I think he has sunk as far as humanly possible, he breaks through to a new rock bottom.

Sharon: And there’s no way to convince Victoria to try a different course of action?

Nick: She won’t listen. Ever since she found that Ashland was lying to her, she is determined to handle this on her own. The only saving grace is I know Dad’s security team is keeping a very close eye on her.

Sharon: Well, that doesn’t make me feel any better. It makes me scared that he thinks that necessary. And this could put you in danger, too. There’s no knowing where Ashland’s gonna draw the line if he feels like the entire Newman family’s antagonizing him. Is this an all-out war?

Victoria: Perhaps I would feel different if we were framing an innocent man. But we’re talking about holding someone who is guilty accountable for what he has done, and I am furious with Adam for trying to taint your reputation by concocting this scheme.

Ashland: You’re saying Adam will get what he deserves.

Victoria: Do you know that way before he tried to frame me for switching my father’s medication he conspired with Jack to come up with a fake diary in which my father admitted to murdering a man? That’s what Adam does. He comes up with fake evidence to frame his enemies.

Ashland: But that was the “old Adam,” right?

Victoria: I will never truly believe that Adam has changed.

Ashland: But…

Victoria: But what?

Ashland: But what if we’re wrong? What if, by some gross miscalculation on our part, it turns out Adam is innocent? Are you willing to take that chance for my sake? Are you willing to go that distance with no remorse? Because I couldn’t live with myself if one day you turn around you and regret the decisions you’re making right here, right now in this room, and you resent me for it because I led you down that path. Do you understand that?

Victoria: Where is all this talk coming from? You seemed so sure earlier. You knew that Adam was guilty.

Ashland: Yes. Adam is guilty. But this — this is putting you in an impossible position. Look, I’ve told you before, I kept things about my past from you because I didn’t want to taint what we have together, what we share, but this right here — you will know how low you are sinking. And you’ll tell yourself that you’re doing it for me and that one day you’ll resent it and you’ll blame me, and I will be the man who made you cross that line. Victoria… I love you so much. But I’m afraid. I’m afraid I’m taking you to the point of no return.

[ Liquid pouring ]

Sally: So, how did things go with Victor?

Adam: Oh, he was nice enough to let me know, once Victoria’s plan succeeds, I get to come back to my little job right here.

Sally: After you’ve been the fake fall guy for the family and everyone turns against you?

Adam: Yep.

Sally: But that whole convoluted plan could have never worked without you. So, once you help them rid their company and the town of Locke, they just discard you, even before they see what you’re capable of as CEO? The whole reason that you took the plan in the first place was to prove yourself a better leader.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I wish I’d been there with you.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Why is that? So he would have two people to ignore?

Sally: No. So I could make sure that he understood your concerns about Victoria’s plan.

Adam: Oh, well, I laid them out for him. We didn’t see eye to eye. Only thing I didn’t point out is that Ashland already has a fall guy. He’s been blaming Dad all along. I mean, why not just finish what Ashland started and let Dad be the bad guy?

Sally: That would have gone over well.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] No, it’s just — it’s abundantly clear why I am the person being thrown under the bus in Victoria’s plan. It just furthers the family view that, uh, I’m the disposable one.

Sally: Victoria might think that, but Victor does not, and Nick is on your side. He said himself that he thinks that you’ve changed. Look, just bide your time. Play along. That way, you have more opportunities to prove yourself. Think about it. In your short time as temporary CEO, you’ve already managed to sell Victor on a bigger and better streaming service.

Adam: Ohh, well, actually, that might have backfired. Since my pitch had creative content, it might have just convinced him that my place is right here at Newman Media.

Sally: Well, it’s not that bad here.

Adam: It is the age-old dynamic. I will never be the kind of heir that Victoria represents.

Victoria: I’m not afraid to cross that line to save you, protecting you and your reputation, and that’s honestly what matters to me the most.

Ashland: Or we could just… walk away.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] You can’t mean that.

Ashland: I do. Why don’t we just go somewhere, start something new?

Victoria: We couldn’t.

Ashland: If you’re that angry at your family for trying to break us up, maybe it’s time for a clean slate.

Victoria: You would really consider doing that, like you did when you buried Bobby DeFranco and reinvented yourself as Ashland Locke? You would just reset everything and start over? I mean, could you really walk away from everything that we’ve created at Newman/Locke?

Ashland: We’ll start a new empire.

Victoria: [ Laughs ] Just like that?

Ashland: You are the only thing that matters to me. Us. Our love. I never believed I could feel this intensely, this profoundly about anything, and I want to protect that. I want to protect you in the best way I can. Just think about it, okay? It could be incredible. Making something of our very own.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Ashland.

Ashland: It’s okay. No, I’m not gonna press you on this. To be continued for now.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: I think I’m gonna head home for a bit.

Victoria: Are you feeling alright?

Ashland: Yeah. No. I’m fine. I, um… nothing a little rest won’t cure. [ Chuckles ]

Adam: I have tried to be good. I’ve done what I consider to be a monumental job at walking the straight and narrow, um, changing the way that people see me, working on my relationships with my family. I mean, you would think donating a kidney to Faith would persuade everyone once and for all.

Sally: That was very noble of you.

Adam: Then there was Victoria’s wedding. I was the one that got Gaines out of the way. The reason that, uh, she and Locke were even able to get up there and, uh, choke out their vows. So I suppose this is all my fault.

Sally: Mm-hmm. 100%.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] [ Sighs ] I’ve just tried to be the best father that, um, I can be to Connor. [ Clears throat ] I’ve tried to make good choices, be an example, you know, be someone that he can look up to. And Chelsea. Chelsea — I have done right by her.

Sally: You were a lot more forgiving than I would have been under the circumstances.

Adam: I gave her a job. I didn’t fight her for sole custody. And I tried — I tried so hard not to break her heart because that was the right thing to do. The old Adam wouldn’t even know what those words meant.

Sally: You’re turning your life around.

Adam: Well, that’s what I’m saying, is I was finally getting to a place where my family was trusting me again. They were including me, and they were expecting me to show up. I mean, I’d proved to them that I wasn’t like Locke. That I didn’t need to lie and cheat to get the life that I wanted. And how do I get rewarded? As being the fall guy. And then when my services are no longer needed as a punching bag, they can just kick me to the curb? [ Scoffs ] I don’t know. I mean, what is the point in being the good guy if that is how they all still see me?

Nick: It’s just complicated, you know? It’s involving a lot of double and triple cross, a lot of moving parts, some loose cannons.

Sharon: Could one of those be Adam?

Nick: I thought you said you had enough to worry about with Mariah’s Friday the 13th wedding.

Sharon: Uh-oh. Speak of the devil.

Nick: Is it Ashland?

Sharon: He is on his way over here.

Nick: Well, I better go. I don’t think I can control myself around him.

Sharon: Don’t worry. I’ll handle him.

Ashland: Hello, Nick.

Nick: I’ll talk to you later.

Sharon: I’ll see you soon.

Ashland: Well, I’m guessing you’ve been brought up to speed as to why I’ve fallen out of the good graces of the Newman family. What are the chances of my getting a good cup of coffee anyway?

Sally: Being the CEO of Newman Media is not exactly kicked to the curb. You are the head of a major communications company that you have managed to turn into an unmitigated success.

Adam: Mm.

Sally: Congratulations. You shouldn’t give up just because Victor made one of his transparent power moves. He obviously was mad that you were challenging the plan, so he put you in your place by reminding you that he has the power to demote you.

Adam: Yeah. Yeah, I got the message.

Sally: But he also has the power to promote you. So, if you want to be a leader, lead. And don’t look for permission. And also, count yourself lucky for all of the opportunities that you’ve been handed ’cause most people don’t get the millions of chances that you’ve had to reinvent themselves or the resources at their disposal.

Adam: Thank you.

Sally: For what?

Adam: Um…your honesty. And for reminding me that, uh, it’s easy for me to sound like a selfish and insensitive jerk. I know that you’ve had to work a lot harder to get where you are than I have.

Sally: Well, I’ve never fooled myself into believing that the world is fair.

Adam: Mm.

Sally: Besides, from my brief exposure to the Newman family dynamics, you are a saint for what you’ve had to put up with. And I know that you’ve had to jump through hoops of your own to get where you are now.

Adam: So, I’m forgiven for my little pity party?

Sally: Well, you’re lucky that you have me to keep you in line.

Adam: [ Laughs ] Agreed.

Sally: Do me a favor. Please don’t let this get under your skin. You have done a monumental job of turning your life around.

Adam: Mm. I’m just glad you didn’t know the old me.

Sally: Well, the one I’m with now is phenomenal.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: And you will get a chance to make your move, and when you do, I know it will be amazing.

Ashland: Huh. I have the feeling that this is gonna be the coldest cup of coffee I’ve ever had.

Sharon: You’re more than welcome to visit a different establishment.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] And you have the right to refuse service to anyone, so I guess I should be thanking you for not kicking me out.

Sharon: Oh, I, uh — I give the cold shoulder to everyone who lies about having cancer.

Ashland: You know, I heard about your recent health crisis, and I’m really sorry you had to go through that. But for what it’s worth, I am innocent of the claims made against me.

Sharon: I want to give you the benefit of the doubt. I really do. But —

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Nikki: Hey. I saw Ashland leave your office, so I knew the coast was clear. What’s going on? Has something happened?

Victoria: In a way.

Nikki: Well, did he have more fake evidence to use against Adam?

Victoria: No, just the opposite. Ashland is questioning whether we should go through with this plan to blame Adam.

Nikki: Oh, really? And why is that? Does he think it might backfire?

Victoria: No, it’s bigger than that. He claims that he doesn’t want to force me to cross the line and get my hands dirty.

Nikki: Wow. That’s the last thing I would have expected.

Victoria: Ashland has dropped this charade that there’s proof that Adam is behind everything, and now he says that he’s going to have to plant it. And he doesn’t want to drag me down into it. I had to practically beg him to frame Adam so that Ashland would still believe that I’m on his side.

Nikki: Oh, my god. I cannot believe how manipulative he is. He wants you to think that he actually loves you and that he suddenly has a conscience? He’s despicable. Victoria, what are you thinking?

Victoria: In all the time I’ve known him, he’s never sounded so sincere.

Sharon: Your coffee. May you drink it in good health. You know, when I was sick, I found that green tea — oh. What am I talking about? Barking up the wrong tree.

Ashland: I was really hoping you would give me the benefit of the doubt, but, uh… well, I fully intend to exonerate myself.

Sharon: And bring the real criminal to light. Well, I won’t hold my breath. Excuse me. I have some to take care of.

Ashland: Of course.

Sally: Um… do you want to leave?

Adam: Actually, um, give me a moment with Ashland. I’ve got an idea.

Sally: Be careful.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Ashland.

Ashland: Oh, look at that. It’s the new pretend CEO. Uh, let me give you two pieces of advice. Uh, don’t spend too much time on projects that won’t come to fruition, and don’t get too comfortable. The, uh — the title, the power — it’s all gonna be gone in a flash. Excuse me.

Adam: Well, hey, don’t leave yet. I’m here to make a deal.

Nikki: Ashland is a liar, a con man. That’s what he does. And he’s damn good at it. He has been working us from day one, until we learned the truth.

Victoria: I think there’s more to this.

Nikki: Honey, don’t fool yourself. He knows his days are numbered, and he’s looking for a clean exit. Or maybe he’s figured out what we are planning and he wants to get away before we can pull it off.

Victoria: He said that we should escape.

Nikki: What are you talking about?

Victoria: He asked me if I would be willing to walk away from you all and the company and go somewhere and start fresh.

Nikki: Oh, yeah, as if either one of you would walk away from your companies. I think he has grown suspicious and he is testing you. Sweetheart, after everything that’s happened, everything that we know, don’t tell me that you were tempted to run away with him. Victoria?

Ashland: I thought I made it clear when we spoke earlier that I’m not interested in making any deals.

Adam: Well, this one is different. This offer comes without any threats.

Ashland: I see. And by whose authority do you make this offer?

Adam: Mine. I am representing the Newman family. Now, we are prepared to give you $500 million to walk away.

Ashland: “Walk away.”

Adam: Well, start over somewhere else, which seems to be one of your greatest talents. You leave Newman/Locke. You leave Victoria today.

Nick: Why is everyone so upset? Has Victoria’s plan hit a snag?

Nikki: Well, now Ashland seems to be conflicted about framing Adam.

Nick: Well, honestly, so am I, Vick. Uh, I hate to say it, but I never, ever liked your plan. It forces you to cross a line that I’m not comfortable with.

Victoria: That’s funny because Ashland shares that sentiment. He told me earlier that he doesn’t want to drag me to the point of no return.

Nick: Well, it looks like Ashland and I finally agree about something.

Victoria: I disagree. I’m not selling my soul to oust my husband. I’m just allowing him to perpetuate the crime of coming up with false evidence to frame Adam. It’s still the strongest plan that we have.

Nikki: Well, the only problem now is that Ashland is having second thoughts. Has what Ashland said made you question your decision? Victoria, after everything that has happened, despite everything, is there still a part of you that is in love with him?

Victor asked Victoria if she still loved Ashland after all the betrayal and lies. Victoria asked if it really mattered if she loved or hated Ashland. Nick said yes, because the emotional toll this was taking on Victoria would be worse if she still had feelings for Ashland. Victoria said the feelings she had for Ashland were very strong, and they weren’t going to go away overnight. She said her residual feelings didn’t matter – what mattered was the crimes he’d committed and what mattered was the plan to get him out of the company. Nikki pointed out that the plan seemed to be falling apart. Victor didn’t know that, so Nikki explained that Ashland was having second thoughts about framing Ashland.

Victoria said Ashland told her he didn’t want her to cross an ethical line by framing Adam. He also suggested he and Victoria run away together. Victor thought that Ashland was suspicious and he was testing Victoria to see if she was on his side. Victoria’s family was about ready to abandon the plan and do something else. Victoria was adamant that she could handle herself and Ashland. She said the plan was solid, and she was committed to seeing it through. “And you still don’t trust me,” she said. Victor said it wasn’t about trust. He thought Ashland was backpedaling from the plan because he was suspicious. “Or maybe he is seriously conflicted. Maybe it’s possible for him to be this ruthless and also love me and want to protect me. The two of those ideas are not mutually exclusive,” Victoria said. Victor sighed and said maybe Victoria was right. Victoria thought that was ironic coming from Victor. He asked what that meant. “She is comparing the dynamic she has with Ashland to what you and I have. That you can be ruthless, yet you love me. You always want to protect me and I’ve always loved you. Even at your worst, and vice versa,” Nikki explained. Nikki couldn’t give Ashland the benefit of the doubt. Victor thought the situations were completely different, but Victoria disagreed. Victor stated that Ashland was a narcissist. He said if Ashland were a man, he would’ve come clean to Victoria before the wedding and begged for forgiveness. “Or at least before he signed that contract to be co-CEO,” Nick added. Victor hated to say it, but Ashland used Victoria, and he would’ve tossed her away as soon as she wasn’t useful anymore. Victoria looked hurt. Victor promised to make Ashland pay, and he told Victoria not to question her plan.

Nikki said they didn’t mean to be heavy handed – they just needed to get through to Victoria. Nick demanded to know if Victoria had affection for Ashland. Victoria needed to think about it. She felt like they lacked faith in her ability to make good decisions. She needed time away from all of them to think. She rushed out of the office. Nick admitted he may have come on too strong. Nikki knew he was coming from a good place. Victor wondered if they were too tough on Victoria. Nikki thought they all said what needed to be said. Nick left. Nikki was going to get some work done. She had a feeling Victoria would be back sooner than later. Victor was going to stay at the office. Nikki hoped Victoria would calm down, so they could all have a civil conversation.

On the patio of Crimson Lights, Adam offered Ashland half a billion dollars to leave Victoria and the company. Ashland said he wasn’t strapped for cash, but that was a substantial amount of money. Adam said Ashland could buy a private island or a rocket and shoot himself off into space. Adam didn’t care how Ashland left – he was offering up a drama-free exit. Ashland was concerned that accepting this deal would be an admission of guilt. Adam told Ashland to stop pretending he still had cancer and that he didn’t prey on Victoria’s emotions to get his hands on the company. Adam didn’t care that Ashland lied, since Adam’s past was littered with similar schemes. Adam said Ashland’s plan fell apart, so he should just leave with his reputation intact. Ashland thought Adam was only doing this to get Ashland and Victoria out of the picture so he could have Victoria’s job. Adam didn’t think his motives should play a role in Ashland’s decision. Ashland asked if Victor knew Adam was making this offer. “You really think I have the temerity and the guts to make a deal like this without my father’s approval?,” Adam asked. Ashland supposed Victor would’ve had to sign off on such a substantial sum.

Ashland suggested that it was a bit cruel of Victor to have Adam offer Ashland five hundred million dollars. Ashland happened to know that Victor had been forced to pay Victoria, Nick and Abby five hundred million each over their trusts, but not Adam. Adam said he wasn’t part of the lawsuit. “It still seems unfair, don’t you think? I mean you never got that kind of money from your father,” Ashland said. “It’s almost as if he’s saying to you that you weren’t in the same league as his other children. As your siblings. That’s gotta hurt,” Ashland said. Adam grinned and said nice try, but he was doing fine. Ashland thought it must be exhausting for Adam to have to prove himself to Victor over and over and over. Adam said he and his dad were doing fine. He told Ashland not to read into the number – Adam and Victor had agreed on a sum that they thought would get Ashland out of their lives. Adam said this offer expired today. Ashland said it was a lot to consider, and he asked what if he needed more time. Adam said Ashland had one hour. If Ashland took the deal, the money would be wired into his account tomorrow morning. “And if not, good luck surviving what comes next,” Adam said. He left.

Adam went to Society and told Sally the latest. She was shocked Ashland didn’t immediately accept all that money. Adam said Ashland didn’t turn it down either, so he must be considering it. Sally thought Adam handled it masterfully. That meant a lot to him. They saw Victoria drinking at the bar. Sally asked if Adam wanted to leave, but he said he had to talk to Victoria. Sally went and got a table. Adam asked Victoria how the plan was going. Victoria didn’t want to get into it, but there might be a change in plans. He asked what that meant. She said he’d know when he needed to. “You really are a piece of work. I have put myself at risk to try and help you and you can’t even do the bare minimum to keep me informed? It’s like I’m a lesser being than you except when you need something from me,” he complained. She told him to calm down. He thought it was obvious that her plan didn’t work, and that she screwed it up. She denied it. He said that he told Victor this wasn’t going to work. He guessed that Ashland saw through her deception, and now he was backing off. He guessed it must suck to realize you couldn’t control the world. She said she accomplished more than he’d ever dreamed of. He suggested that was he wasn’t offered the opportunity. She countered that he’d been given plenty of chances, and he’d failed every time, because of who he was.

After Victoria left, Adam went to Sally. He told her that Victoria was refusing to admit that she blew it with Ashland and that her plan was a mess. He felt it validated his decision to take matters into his own hands and create an alternative plan. Sally asked how Victor would react to Adam offering Ashland a huge amount of money without consulting with him first. “If Ashland takes the deal and he leaves town, my dad will be fine with it, and if [Ashland] turns it down – [Victor] doesn’t even need to know,” Adam replied.

Ashland went to Victoria’s office and discovered her parents were still there. Ashland wanted to discuss the offer Adam made, and he asked if it was legit. Victor pretended that he knew what Ashland was talking about. Victor asked why the offer wouldn’t be legit. “The amount. You see, I happen to know that that’s the exact same number that you were forced to hand over to each of your children except Adam. So he was forced to relive that pain all over again, which I thought was heartless on your part. How exactly do you rationalize putting your own son in that position?,” Ashland asked. Victor said Ashland had no right to question his relationship with his son. He asked whether Ashland would take the five hundred million and get the hell out of town.

Ashland wasn’t sure if he was going to take the deal yet. He’d wondered if Adam made the offer on his own. “You think he’d agree to that sum of money without my permission?,” Victor asked. Ashland recalled that Adam had said almost the same thing. However, Ashland had picked up on some hesitation from Victor earlier, as if he’d been caught off guard. Victor said he’d been stunned by Ashland’s unmitigated gall to show up here, even though they all knew he was guilty. Victoria walked in and asked what was going on. Ashland said Adam, and perhaps Victor, offered him a lot of money to walk away from Victoria and his life in Genoa City. He asked her if he should take the deal and go. “Maybe I put you through enough pain. Maybe it’s time to put it to an end. Maybe we should just both move on,” he said.

Ashley found Traci staring out the window waiting for Jack. It reminded Ashley of when they were little and Traci would wait all day for their dad to come home from a business trip. Traci was eager to hear about Jack’s trip and about his granddaughter. She and Ashley hoped the trip went the way he wanted it to.

At the hotel, Phyllis told Jack he’d been chivalrous to carry in her bag. She wished there was something she could do for him. He asked if she could tell Kyle his mother was alive. He wasn’t serious, because he knew he needed to be the one to break that news. “Poor Kyle,” he said, and Phyllis hugged him. Jack felt that Diane ruined his trip to see Allie. Phyllis thought the trip was good because Jack made a real connection to Allie, and there was nothing Diane could do to change that. Billy texted about the trip. Jack decided to share the news with all his siblings at once.

After Jack left, Amanda dropped by to see Phyllis. She’d come yesterday too, and someone told her Phyllis was in LA. Amanda hoped Phyllis got to do something fun on her trip. Phyllis said the trip was one revelation after another. Amanda just went through that same sort of drama with her family, so she knew how intense it could be. Amanda was curious if Jack asked Phyllis to come to LA. Phyllis said that she offered to go. Amanda smiled and said the relationship was clearly getting deeper. Phyllis said she went out there as an advisor and voice of reason. Amanda laughed and said that didn’t sound like Phyllis. Phyllis said it went against her basic instinct. Amanda thought that showed how much Phyllis cared about Jack. Phyllis stated that she and Jack were just friends for now because that was what he needed. Amanda suggested she and Phyllis do a spa day. Phyllis was tempted, but she was behind on work. Amanda told Phyllis she should pamper herself after a long flight and hang out with her favorite person in the world.

When Jack got home, Billy, Traci and Ashley were there. Traci excitedly asked all about Allie, and Billy joked that Traci had already photoshopped Allie into the family portrait. Jack was glad to see the three of them here. He wanted to have regular family gatherings. Jack’s siblings liked the idea, but Billy sensed Jack was stalling. Jack said Allie was pretty, bright, curious and thoughtful. She reminded him of Keemo from time to time, but more than anything, she reminded him of Ashley. He said Allie was clear eyed, critical thinking and working on her Master’s in chemical engineering. Jack knew how skeptical Ashley had been, but Allie had been even more skeptical, and he thought when they met, they would hit it off.

Jack had everyone brace for some unsettling news. He revealed that Diane was alive and she was the one who sent the texts luring him to Keemo’s house. Billy, Ashley and Traci were in disbelief. Jack said Diane was hoping that after she brought him and Allie together, he’d help her reconnect with Kyle. They were all appalled. Jack said he had to tell Kyle. Ashley asked if Jack was sure. Jack said he couldn’t keep it from Kyle. Traci worried about what this would do to Kyle and she asked how Diane could put him through this. Ashley said Diane was inherently selfish. “Please tell us, how did this bitch come back into our lives?,” Ashley said.

Jack said Diane knew the whole town hated her and felt the walls closing in, so she faked her death with Deacon’s help. He said Diane claimed she’d rehabilitated herself and turned her life around. Ashley hoped Jack didn’t believe that. Jack didn’t buy it for one second. Jack hadn’t forgotten one thing Diane did to him – the lies, the games, using Kyle’s custody as a weapon… He didn’t forget what Diane did to Ashley too. “Where do I even start? She slept with my fiancee, she blackmailed me, what she did to my daughter, and then her so-called death, we were all turned into suspects,” Ashley said. Ashley said even Traci hated Diane, and Traci tried to see the best in everyone. Traci said Diane took pleasure in wreaking havoc. Billy hoped Jack had a plan to deal with Diane, because she was a potential threat to half the town.

“Clearly you see that her leading you to Allie was just another one of Diane’s games,” Ashley said to Jack. Jack explained that Diane claimed it wasn’t a game and that she honestly wanted to make amends with Kyle. Jack’s first instinct was to say hell no, but Phyllis helped him realize this was Kyle’s choice. Ashley bristled at Jack telling Phyllis all this before he told his own family. He clarified that Phyllis was with him in LA. Ashley asked why. Jack said Phyllis flew out to support him, and he was glad she did because he’d been spinning out of control ever since Diane showed up. He said Phyllis kept him grounded, and that was what he needed.

Traci was very glad Phyllis was there to help Jack. He said Phyllis was a lifesaver and she was right about being honest with Kyle. Jack said that Kyle deserved the truth, and if he didn’t tell Kyle, Diane was going to. Diane almost called Kyle, but to Jack’s relief, he convinced her to let him contact Kyle. “Well how incredibly generous of her. She doesn’t want to traumatize her son, so she’ll just leave it to you,” Ashley griped. Jack was concerned about Kyle’s reaction. He was going to warn Kyle about Diane and tell him about the dark side of his mother that they’d all tried to keep from him when they thought she was dead. Jack said Kyle read about Diane in Restless Style, but there was so much more to know, and reading about her behavior was different than being affected by it. Billy asked if Diane was coming to town. Ashley was adamant that Jack couldn’t let Diane come back to Genoa City, because Diane’s return would have a big effect on a lot of people.

Back at the hotel, Phyllis and Amanda left the lobby for the spa. Just after they walked out, Diane entered and booked a room under her Taylor Jensen alias.

Ashley, Billy, and Traci are shocked when Jack tells them Diane is alive and the details of how she faked her death. Jack wonders how he will find the words to tell Kyle and everyone worries about how Kyle will handle the news. Ashley, Billy, Jack, and Traci all agree that Diane can’t return to Genoa City.

Diane arrives in town and checks into the Grand Phoenix using her alias Diane Henson and Jack is unaware that she is in town. Ashland tells Adam he will think about his offer of 500 million dollars to leave town. Ashland talks to Victor later and asks him if Adam had his approval to offer him such a large amount of money to leave town. Victor has no idea about Adam’s offer to Ashland but he tells Ashland that he and Adam agreed on the amount of money and he wonders if Ashland will take the money and leave town. Victoria arrives at the office and Ashland tells her that Victor offered him a large amount of money to give up everything including her and leave town. Ashland asks Victoria if she thinks he should take the money and leave town.

Adam is hurt when Victor tells him that after they get Ashland out of the company, he will remain CEO of Newman Media and Victoria will remain CEO of Newman Enterprises. Sally tells Adam to focus on all the good things he has done at Newman Media and all the good things he has done for his family. Sally tells Adam to be patient and continue to turn his life around and he will get his chance to prove to his family that he has changed.

Adam and Nick worry that Victoria’s plan will fail because there are too many details that could go wrong.

Ashland tells Victoria that they should leave everything and start a new life somewhere else because he doesn’t want to force her to cross a line by planting evidence to prove Adam framed him. Nick also feels the same way as Ashland and tells Victoria that is why he never liked her plan.

Adam has an idea and tells Ashland that the Newman family has authorized him to offer him five hundred million dollars to leave Victoria alone, leave town, and start a new life.

Victoria went to work and found Ashland staring out the window. She mentioned that he got up and left the house early. She was surprised he was there. She just came to tie up some loose ends before the temporary CEO took over. She asked if he had a plan he wanted to share yet. He was having second thoughts about the trip. She reminded him that he was the one who decided to cancel. He still thought that was the smartest move, because it would give them time to prove Adam was setting him up. However, he’d looked forward to having time with her away from the searing eyes and false accusations. She joked that it was also known as a typical Newman dinner. He knew this was taking a toll on her. She said they’d keep each other strong. He told her he had the skin of a woolly mammoth, but she said that wasn’t true. He stated that she knew him better than anyone, and it was true that this was starting to wear on him. He lamented that they wouldn’t have the chance to reconnect, but he said they’d get back to Tuscany eventually. She said in the meantime, they’d create an oasis for themselves while they searched for proof.

Victoria sensed Ashland wanted to say something. He said if he’d known the universe was saving her for him, he would’ve lived an entirely different, more wholesome life. He stated that she temporarily sacrificed the job she worked her entire life for to stand by him. He wished he could make up for it. She said this was was her choice, and she felt good about it. He never thought he could love someone as deeply as he loved her. He was scared she could just walk away from him if she believed the lies. She asked if he was doubting the plan. He wasn’t sure they were on the right path. He revealed that he snuck into Adam’s office and got into his computer. He didn’t find any evidence that Adam framed him. Victoria said Adam was too smart to leave a digital trail. She said they had to dig deeper. He wasn’t sure he wanted to. She was adamant that they’d uncover Adam’s mistakes. He said when he was in Adam’s office, he overheard Adam and Sally outside. In that moment, Ashland realized he was behaving like a lowlife criminal. He said he’d done things like that in the past, but he put that life behind him when he fell in love with her. Now that man was back again, and he hated himself for it. He said the only way for this plan to work would be to go further down that path, and he was afraid it would destroy their love for good.

Victoria maintained that fighting together would only strengthen their love. Ashland was concerned they might cross a line while protecting their love that would only destroy it in the end. Victoria asked if Ashland thought Adam was guilty. He thought Adam was the most obvious culprit, but they didn’t find any proof. Victoria said Adam was good at covering his tracks. Ashland replied that time was of the essence, which meant they’d have to fabricate proof against Adam in order to make the plan work. He couldn’t in good conscience ask her to be part of that. “Do you understand what we are about to do? We are about to embark on a scheme to defraud. Exactly the same thing that your family is accusing me of doing and that lie almost cost me your trust and your love. Now as far as I know, unless you’re keeping something from me, you’ve never been an active participant in anything like this,” he stated. She said she stood by him when he, Adam and Victor turned the tables on Billy. He reminded her that she chose to stay out of that plot.

Victoria said she might feel different if they were framing an innocent man, but they were talking about holding a guilty man responsible for what he’d done. She revealed that Adam once conspired with Jack to fake a diary where Victor confessed to murdering a man. Ashland said that was the old Adam. Victoria didn’t believe Adam changed. Ashland asked what if they were wrong, and Adam was innocent. He couldn’t live with himself if she one day regretted the choices she was making today and she resented him for leading her down that path. She asked where the doubt was coming from – earlier he’d seemed sure Adam was guilty. He said that Adam was guilty but this was putting her in an impossible position. He’d kept things about his past from her because he didn’t want to taint what they shared. He said if she did this, she’d know how low she was sinking, and she’d tell herself she was doing it for him, but one day, she’d blame him for making her cross that line. He held her and said he loved her so much, but he was afraid he was taking her to the point of no return.

Victoria took Ashland’s hands and said that she wasn’t afraid to cross that line to protect him and his reputation. He said they could just walk away – go somewhere else and start something new. She asked if he could really reset his life again, like he did when he buried Bobby DeFranco and started over as Ashland Locke? He said they’d start a new empire together. He told her that she was the only thing that mattered to him. He never believed he could feel this intensely about anything, and he wanted to protect that and protect her. “It could be incredible; making something of our very own,” he said. He said there was no pressure. He was going to go home for awhile. She asked if he felt okay. He was fine, he just needed to rest. He left.

Victor went to Adam’s office and asked if there was any evidence Ashland was moving forward with his plan. According to Adam, there was no indication Ashland planted files on Adam’s computer. Adam wanted to know what to expect as Victoria’s plan unfolded. He asked how much warning he was going to get as things moved along and what to expect when he was busted for framing Ashland. He asked what he was supposed to tell Connor. He asked if Victor really thought this plan was their smartest move.

Victor wondered why Adam was questioning Victoria’s plan. Adam felt he should be entitled to do so, since the plan revolved around him. Victor said Ashland took the bait and he’d now come up with “proof” Adam was out to get him. “Which everyone will believe because hey, it’s Adam,” Adam replied. Victor clarified that it was a charade. Victor said they’d apologize to Ashland and ask him for evidence, and Ashland would plant that evidence in Adam’s computer. Adam said Ashland might figure it out, since he’d outwitted them many times. Victor said they’d catch Ashland red-handed, and then Victor would have a reason to nullify Ashland’s contract with Newman Locke, then Victoria would be free and Adam would emerge unscathed.

Adam understood the plan, and he’d stick to his role of the black sheep, but he was a little tired of always having to prove he was a team player. He said he improved Victoria’s plan by saying he should stay on as temporary CEO so that Victor could pretend to fire him when Ashland planted and then found the evidence. Adam thought it sounded great on paper, but Victoria’s plan had a ton of potential pitfalls. He said Victoria was inspired by Billy’s plan to trick Adam into publishing disparaging articles about Billy’s drinking. It was a scheme so weak that when Victoria found out about it, she shut it down. Adam said the plan hinged on Ashland finding fake evidence, but when Adam gave him access, he didn’t take it. Adam wondered if Ashland knew Adam gave him access to the computer. Victor said Ashland’s days at the family business were numbered one way or the other. Adam wanted to talk about the business. Victor said that after all this was finished, Adam would be CEO of Newman Media, and Victoria would be sole CEO of Newman Locke. Adam intende to play his role, but he thought Victor had too much faith in a half-baked plan that Ashland might already see through. He was concerned Ashland might be planning his next move. Victor was unfazed – he said this was a chess game, and he was very good at it.

Later, Victor was with gone and Sally was with Adam. She asked how things went. He told her that Victor said Adam would be going back to his old job once Victoria’s plan succeeded. Sally didn’t think it was right that Adam was just going to get discarded after the plan was finished, without even getting a chance to prove he was the better leader. She noted that the plan couldn’t even work without Adam. She wished she’d been at the office earlier to make sure Victor understood Adam’s concerns about the plan. Adam said he laid it all out, but Victor just disagreed. The only thing Adam didn’t mention was that Ashland had been blaming Victor all along, so the family could’ve let Victor be the fall guy instead. Adam thought he was chosen to be the fall guy in Victoria’s plan because the family viewed him as the disposable one. Sally said Victoria might think that, but Victor didn’t, and Nick was on Adam’s side too. She encouraged him to bide his time and play along so he’d have more opportunities to prove himself. She noted that he sold Victor on the idea of the streaming service. He said that might have backfired – his pitch was about creative content, and that might have convinced Victor that Adam belonged at Newman Media. Sally said it wasn’t that bad at this company. Adam said he’d never be the kind of heir Victoria represented.

Adam tried to be good. He felt he was doing a monumental job walking the straight and narrow. He donated a kidney to Faith, and you’d think that would persuade everyone once and for all. He got Gaines out of the way at Victoria’s wedding, and he was the reason she was able to marry Ashland. He supposed that meant this was all his fault. He’d tried to be the best father he could be to Connor. He did right by Chelsea. Sally said Adam had been more forgiving than she would’ve been. Adam said he gave Chelsea a job, he didn’t fight her for full custody and he tried not to break her heart. He’d done the right thing. The old Adam wouldn’t have known what the right thing even meant. He was finally getting to a place where his family was trusting and including him. He proved he wasn’t like Locke, and he got rewarded by being made the fall guy, and once his services were no longer needed, like a punching bag, his family was going to kick him to the curb. He wondered what the point to being the good guy was if his family’s perception of him hadn’t changed.

Sally opined that being the head of Newman Media was not exactly getting kicked to the curb. She said Adam was the head of a major communications company that he’d turned into an unmitigated success. She told him not to give up because Victor made one of his transparent power moves. “[Victor] obviously was mad that you were challenging the plan, so he put you in your place by reminding you that he has the power to demote you. But he also has the power to promote you, so if you want to be a leader, lead and don’t look for permission,” she said. She also thought he should count himself lucky for all the opportunities he’d been handed because most people didn’t get the millions of chances he’d gotten to reinvent himself, and they didn’t have the resources at their disposal. He thanked Sally for the honesty and for reminding him that it was easy for him to sound like a selfish insensitive jerk. He knew she’d had to work a lot harder than he did to get to where she was. From her brief exposure to the Newman family dynamics, she thought he was a saint for what he’d had to put up with. She knew he’d had to jump through hoops to get to where he was too. She told him not to let this get under his skin. She said he’d done a monumental job of turning his life around. He was glad she didn’t know the old him. She said the Adam she was with now was phenomenal, and she said he’d get a chance to make a move, and when he did, it would be amazing.

At Crimson Lights, Sharon talked to Nick about Mariah and Tessa’s Friday the Thirteenth wedding. She said they’d probably get married under a ladder to thumb their noses at superstition. Nick thought the wedding date was weird at first, but now he was coming around. Sharon was concerned because there wasn’t much time to get ready for the wedding, which was in May. The 70s glam theme Noah came up with would take a lot of time. She thought they should have daily meetings about this from now until the night of the wedding.

Nick said that if Tessa and Mariah thought they could pull the 13^th off, everyone could make it work. Sharon asked Nick to scour the entire Midwest for authentic 70s décor, and he accepted the task. She asked what was wrong with him. He was worried about Victoria and Ashland and Victoria’s plan. He didn’t bring it up earlier while they were discussing the wedding. Sharon said the last thing Mariah and Tessa needed was to hear about a marriage based on lies. Nick appreciated the diversion the wedding gave him. Sharon asked if Nick wanted to talk about the plan. He thought it best if she didn’t know what it was. He said that Victoria’s plan made her complicit, and he thought that crossed a line.

Nick was worried for Victoria’s safety. He was glad Victoria didn’t seem to buy Ashland’s claims, but a lot could go wrong. Sharon thought Ashland was despicable. Nick knew Ashland was trouble from the start. Every time Nick thought Ashland sunk as far as possible, he hit a new rock bottom. Nick said Victoria was determined to handle this on her own. The only saving grace was that Victor had his security team on Victoria. It worried Sharon that Victor thought this was necessary. She said that Nick could be in danger too, because there was no telling where Ashland would draw the line if he felt like the whole Newman family was antagonizing him.

Nick said this plan was just complicated, involving a lot of moving parts and loose cannons. Sharon asked if Adam was involved. Nick thought Sharon said she already had enough to worry about with the Friday the 13^th wedding. Sharon saw Ashland come in and head their way. She warned Nick, who said he was going to leave because he couldn’t control himself around Ashland. Ashland came up and said hi. Nick left. Ashland guessed Sharon knew why he’d fallen out of the Newman’s good graces. He asked if he could get coffee anyway.

Sharon started to make coffee, and Ashland mused that it would probably be the coldest cup he’d ever had. Sharon noted that he could go to another establishment. He acknowledged that he should thank her for not refusing him service. She said she gave the cold shoulder to everyone who pretended to have cancer. He heard about her recent health crisis and he was sorry she had to go through that, but he was innocent. She wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but… Before she could say more, Adam and Sally walked in.

Sharon served Ashland. “You know, when I was sick I found that green tea – oh what am I talking about. Barking up the wrong tree,” she said. He’d hoped she’d give him the benefit of the doubt. He intended to exonerate himself. She excused herself and went in the back. Adam asked Sally for a moment with Ashland. Adam approached Ashland, who called him the new pretend CEO. Adam had an offer to make. “By whose authority do you make this offer?,” Ashland asked. Adam was speaking under his own authority and representing the Newman family. He offered Ashland half a billion dollars to leave and start over somewhere else. “You leave Newman Locke, you leave Victoria. Today.” Adam stated.

Nikki went to Victoria’s office and said she saw Ashland leave. She asked what was going on. Victoria brought Nikki up to speed. She said she practically had to beg Ashland to frame Adam, so that he would believe she was still on his side. Nikki said Ashland wanted Victoria to believe he actually loved her and that he suddenly had a conscience. She called him despicable. Victoria said that Ashland had never sounded as sincere as he did today. Nikki was adamant that Ashland was a liar and conman. Victoria thought there was more to it. Nikki didn’t want Victoria to fool herself – she said Ashland knew his days were numbered and he was looking for a clean exit. Victoria revealed that Ashland asked if she’d walk away from the family and the company and start fresh. “As if either one of you would walk away from your companies. I think he has grown suspicious and he is testing you,” Nikki said. Nikki was hoping Victoria wasn’t tempted to run away with Ashland.

Nick came into the office. Nikki told him Ashland seemed conflicted about framing Adam. Nick said he never liked the plan, because it forced Victoria to cross a line he wasn’t comfortable with. Victoria said that was funny because Ashland said the same thing. Nick guessed that was the one thing he and Ashland had in common. She said she wasn’t selling her soul to to oust her husband – she was just allowing Ashland to perpetuate the crime of coming up with false evidence to frame Adam. She thought it was the strongest plan they had. Victor walked in and heard that Ashland was having second thoughts. Nikki asked if there was a part of Victoria that was still in love with Ashland.
