Marlena: Chad… I just spoke to belle.

[Sighs] She said that you had told the children about abigail.

[Knocking at door]

Rafe: Yeah?

Nicole: Hi.

Rafe: Hey.

Nicole: Sorry to interrupt.

Rafe: No.

Nicole: I was just wondering if you had any luck on abigail’s case, and to bring you some sustenance, of course.

Rafe: Thank you. I could definitely use it. And no, I’m just poring over these photos again and again, just…wanna see if I’ve missed anything. But, uh, so far, no. Haven’t been able to zero in on a suspect.

Sami: He has to know there’s no way I’d stay married to a man who lied to me about kidnapping me.

[Knocking at door]

Kate: Well, what the hell happened here?

Ej: So shall we?

Belle: I thought you’d never ask.

[Doorbell rings] Ignore it.

Ej: It could be the police. Maybe they made some progress with the investigation.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Kate: This looks like a room in high school.

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, not quite.

Kate: I assume you were looking for something.

Lucas: Yeah, I, um, I heard that abigail’s killer may have taken some jewelry from her room.

Kate: Thank god. And you just thought that maybe that it was in here?

Lucas: I hoped not. But I couldn’t find it anywhere. So now I’m thinking–I’m hoping that maybe I didn’t do it.

Kate: Oh, god, lucas. I really wish we could base that on a lot more than just an absence of jewelry.

[Sighs] You can’t remember anything about that night?

Lucas: No, unfortunately, I can’T. But the rumor is, whoever killed abigail took the jewelry.

Kate: Okay, which you don’t have.

Lucas: Right, right. So that’s what I’m thinking, you know? If it wasn’t me, gotta be somebody else.

Kate: Okay. Well, let’s hope.

Lucas: I’m gonna do more than hope. I have to stay positive through this. It’s the only way I can stay sane. Yeah, look at this. Speaking of positive, look. Ow, ow!

[Grunts] Look.

Kate: Oh, my god. Is that what I think it is?

Lucas: Yeah. I’m finally gonna propose to sami.

Sami: I need to talk to you.

Ej: Samantha…

Sami: Belle, what are you doing here?

Ej: Your sister is my attorney. We were just discussing some legal matters.

Sami: Oh, fantastic. What trouble have you gotten yourself into this time?

Belle: Ej hasn’t done anything, sami.

Sami: Really? Are you kidding me right now? Of course he has. Nobody just has their lawyer hanging around for no good reason. As much as I hate to admit it, I am still his wife. So I have a right to know what mess you’ve gotten yourself mixed up in this time.

Belle: He hasn’t, sami. Um, the truth is, I am staying here. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Kate: So sami’s back in town?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, she got back a little while ago.

Kate: Where is she right now?

Lucas: She went to go see ej to get him to sign the divorce papers.

Kate: And you were okay with that?

Lucas: No, I wasn’T. Of course not.

Kate: Well, then why didn’t you stop her?

Lucas: I tried to stop her. I told her to let the lawyers handle it. But she wouldn’t listen to me. She was adamant–she wanted ej to sign the papers today. I mean, I’m not happy at the fact that they’re both alone together right now. But you know what? It’s okay. It’s okay if it means that she’s finally through with that bastard once and for all. I’m good.

Kate: [Scoffs] Well, that’s assuming that he signs those divorce papers. Lucas, when has he ever, ever done anything of benefit to you? What if he decides, “no, instead of signing these, I’m gonna convince sami that I’m innocent of her kidnapping”? You’re not a little worried that he might point his finger at you?

Sami: So let me get this straight–you and shawn are separated, and jan spears had his baby? Kay, I understand why you don’t wanna stay with shawn, but why aren’t you staying with mom?

Belle: Oh, I was until mom decided to be jan’s therapist. So couldn’t really stay there anymore.

Sami: Of course she is. Got it. So there’s no room in any hotel in town? You had to bunk in with your client? That’s your only option?

Ej: Actually, belle’s more than just my attorney.

Roman: A lot on your mind, huh? Why do I get the feeling this has something to do with nicole? And look, if you’re hidin’ out up here because of what kate said, that’s just kate being kate. Look, I am sorry that she put you on the spot.

Eric: Yeah, I get the feeling she’s not.

Roman: Yeah, no. I’ll never understand why she just loves stirring up trouble. If it were an olympic sport, she would definitely take the gold.

Eric: Nice to hear she has a hobby.

Roman: Yeah. I just wish it were more like, you know, learning a second language or gardening. And though it is not a hobby of mine to stir up trouble, you are my son, so I do think I am justified in wanting to know–

Eric: What’s going on with nicole and me.

Roman: Care to share?

Nicole: It must be so hard working on this case while you’re still grieving abigail.

Rafe: It is, yeah. But also, whoever did this left two children without a mother. So I am more than motivated to get the son of a bitch and make him pay. And, uh, I’m not gonna be able to live with myself if I don’t get this maniac off the streets.

Nicole: And you will. I have every bit of faith in you.

Rafe: Thank you. Okay, enough about me.

[Chuckles] How was your day? Hopefully, less eventful than mine. What’s going on at basic black?

Nicole: Um, actually, I didn’t come from the office.

Rafe: No?

Nicole: No.

Rafe: Had a meeting?

Nicole: Well, uh, I was lucky. I went to abe’s impromptu wedding. I got to spend the day celebrating life and love.

Chad: Yeah, I read a few articles, um, about how to tell a child that a parent has died. Yeah, I tried to use some of that advice, but it all went out the window as soon as I sat down and I looked at their little faces.

Marlena: Of course it did. Look, I know a few things about you. Among those things are that you are a fabulous dad, and I’m sure you’d do the very best you could for them.

Chad: Yeah, I don’t know about that, I, uh– you know, I just–I just said all the, you know, the usual cliché things, like, “mom had to go to heaven,” and “even though, you know, she’s not gonna be here on earth anymore, she’ll always be in your heart.”

[Scoffs]

[Sighs]

Marlena: Chad… yes, it’s a cliché. But it’s also very true. I think you said the right thing.

Chad: I don’t know. I mean, thomas gets it. Charlotte, she just kept saying, “when’s mom coming back?” And I had to tell her, “mom isn’t coming back. She’s not coming back.” Now, I don’t know how the hell I’m supposed to expect her to understand it when I don’t understand it myself.

Rafe: So abe and paulina finally tied the knot? That’s great news.

Nicole: Yeah, it was spur of the moment. Otherwise, I would’ve asked you to be my plus one.

Rafe: Oh, I–no, I couldn’t have gone anyway. I mean, wouldn’t have felt right taking time off from work, but I’m glad that you went to support them.

Nicole: Yeah, so am I. But I have to say, I mean, the ceremony was fine, but the reception got cut short– I mean, lani confessing to having shot tr…

Rafe: Yeah, I just got the paperwork about lani confessing to killing tr. Didn’t realize she did it in the middle of the reception, though.

Nicole: Yeah, everything came to a screeching halt as you can imagine.

Rafe: Yeah, I’ll bet. And you probably didn’t get anything to eat, and from the size of that bag, you brought enough for two of us. So why don’t you join me?

Nicole: Um, actually, I did have lunch. I ended up at the pub.

Rafe: Oh, you did?

Nicole: Mm-hmm.

Rafe: By yourself?

Nicole: No, I–I ate with roman and kate and eric.

Rafe: Huh.

Eric: Great. You wanna talk about nicole too.

Roman: Look, I don’t want to pry. But you two obviously have a history together, and believe me, I know how much it hurt you when you found out nicole slept with xander. But now that some time has passed…

Eric: What? Go ahead, finish the sentence.

Roman: Well, I just wondered if maybe two of you might be able to work things out.

Eric: Work things out?

Roman: Mm-hmm.

Eric: You make it sound like it’s so easy. Nicole, she’s moved on. She’s with rafe now, and apparently very much in love. Not to mention, they’re actually engaged to get married.

Roman: They’re not married yet.

Lucas: Of course I’m worried about ej pointing the finger at me. But I would’ve needed a physical barrier in the doorway to stop sami from going over there.

Kate: What, are you kidding? You can’t stop a woman on crutches from leaving you? Because if that’s true, it doesn’t bode well for your future together, believe me.

Lucas: You know, she can use those crutches as weapons. But it’s not the point. The point is, even if I managed to stop hurricane sami from blowing over to ej, she would’ve–she would’ve realized that it would’ve made me look suspicious. Don’t you understand that? She would’ve wondered why I care what ej says. Well, all the more reason to think it’s true if that happens.

Kate: Okay, I see your point.

Lucas: You see, this way– this way she knows, sami knows that I’m not threatened by anything that ej says. But I’m just hoping that, you know, whatever he does say, she’s not gonna take much stock into it, because today, I’m gonna propose to her.

Kate: Okay, um, about that…

Lucas: What, what?

Kate: Do you really think this is the right time to push the wedding?

Sami: What exactly do you mean that she’s more than just your attorney?

Ej: We’ve become friends. Belle’s been a great support to me since she came to stay here– especially the night of abigail’s murder.

Sami: You were here when that happened?

Chad: Help! Somebody help!

Belle: What happened?

Ej: What the hell?

Belle: I was, yeah. We tried to do everything we could, and–so chad obviously didn’t want the kids in the house.

Sami: Oh, my god, of course not.

Ej: So we–belle and I–got them out of the house, and took them to marlena and john’S.

Belle: Yeah. Chad’s there with them now. He just told them that their mother died.

Ej: [Sighs]

Marlena: Chad, I’ve had a few patients over the years that have had to tell a child that a parent wasn’t coming home, and what I can tell you is, there is no right or wrong way to do that, and I would never presume to tell you how to tell your children. What I do know is that you are a kind, intuitive man… and you’re a wonderful father… and thank god they have you.

Chad: Thank god I have them.

Marlena: Would you like me to talk to them?

Chad: Yeah, if you wouldn’t mind.

Marlena: I wouldn’t mind. I’d be very glad to do whatever I can to help.

Chad: [Sniffles] I think, um–I think they’re in with john right now. Jack and jennifer brought over a little race car track, so they’re probably playing with that right about now.

Marlena: Oh–

John: Hey, sweetheart. I didn’t know you were home.

Marlena: Yeah. I hear there’s some racing going on in the other room.

John: Mm, yeah. Thomas and charlotte are on lap 500 of the dimera grand prix.

[Chuckles]

Marlena: Sounds like you’re ready for a pit stop.

John: Mm.

Marlena: Why don’t I, um– I’ll take a few rounds.

Chad: Thank you.

Marlena: Of course. Of course.

Sami: No matter how I may feel about the dearly departed, abby–my heart breaks for those kids. I know what it’s like to have to tell your kid that their parent isn’t coming home, and face a future raising your children alone, which is actually reminding me of why I’m here. I have divorce papers, ej, and I would like you to sign them.

John: Been a long day, kid. Get you a beer?

Chad: No, thank you. I should probably stay present for the kids.

John: Yeah, I understand that. Chad… I know that it’s not always helpful to tell someone who’s suffering that they’ve been through a similar situation. I know that, um–I actually used to resent it when people did that to me. I don’t know, I just kind of felt like that maybe they were being dismissive of my pain, you know?

Chad: No, I would never think that about you, john, and I know that you went through something similar– losing your wife.

John: Isabella, yeah.

John: Did you know we had just gotten married? Just–just had a baby–brady– when we found out that she was sick–cancer, and at the end of our fight, I took her to venice, and she died in my arms.

Chad: How–how do you go on?

John: Well, you know, initially, I just knew that I had to be there for brady. I mean, it’s not like I was ever gonna stop missing isabella. That was never gonna happen. But, you know, slowly, my life started to fill up–obviously, bill, doc, and her kids– and now, when I remember isabella, I just think about how lucky I was to have had her before I had to say goodbye.

Chad: See, that’s the difference, though. You got to say goodbye. I never did.

Ej: It’s not that I can’t wait to sever our marital bond, samantha. But there’s a lot going on right now. Abigail’s death, the birth of shawn’s baby–

Sami: Wait, wait, wait. Sorry, what does shawn’s baby have to do with whether or not you sign these papers today?

Ej: My point is that it’s obvious I have a lot on my plate. So maybe we could table this for the moment? There’s no pressing need to finalize the divorce right now.

Sami: Yes, actually, there is. Lucas and I are getting married again.

Lucas: Are you saying i shouldn’t ask sami to marry me?

Kate: No. No, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying that you have a lot going on right now, and you might not be able to focus on the wedding when you’re worrying about whether your bride is going to find out that you were the one behind her kidnapping.

Lucas: What, is this your way of suggesting I tell sami the truth?

Kate: No, it’s my way of suggesting that you get rid of this debilitating stress. You’ve already blown your sobriety to hell, lucas.

Lucas: You know what? There’s not gonna be any more stress. As soon as I marry sami, the stress will be gone! I mean, there’ll be stress, but it’ll be a different kind of stress–it’ll go away!

Kate: I know you know better than this. You know better than to pin your emotional well-being on sami brady. Lucas, look at your brother. Look at philip. He allowed himself to be consumed with his feelings for chloe. Did it make him happy? No. It didn’t relieve his stress. All it did was release this– this terrible stream of dark impulses.

Lucas: So you’re comparing me to philip? You think I’m gonna snap, right? You think I’m gonna end up in a mental institution like my brother?

Kate: Lucas, stop, don’T. Don’T. Philip did not snap. He had issues. He had issues that he needed to get help for.

Lucas: Issues that caused him to fake his own death.

Kate: I’m just so– I’m worried.

Lucas: Stop saying that! Stop saying you’re worried about me, okay? You have no reason to be worried about me! I would never do anything to abigail! I would never–I would never k– I can’t even say it. She’s my niece. I would never do anything wrong. I would never hurt her like that. I respect her! I loved her! She was a great mother! And to think I had anything to do with her death– I couldn’t go on.

Kate: Oh…

Lucas: I’m telling you right now, I couldn’t go on.

[Dramatic music]

Kate: Honey, I know how hard this is for you, okay?

Lucas: Especially since i feel ashamed about what I did. I feel horrible about kidnapping sami. But, you know what? She’s never gonna find out that I kidnapped her. She won’t–she won’T. It’ll be a whole new chapter in my life–you know, in our lives.

Kate: Mm.

Lucas: And I know I can’t take it back. I can’t take back what I did, but I can promise to be the best husband I can possibly be. I mean, that’d be a good way to make it up to her, right?

Kate: Yeah, yes, yes, yes, yes. Yeah, no, honey, I want that for you. I want that for you.

Lucas: [Sniffling]

Kate: Your happiness means everything to me, lucas.

Lucas: Sami means everything to me.

Kate: I know, I know.

Lucas: So does that mean I have your blessing?

Kate: You have my blessing, yes. You have my undying support, and you’re gonna need it. Believe me. Baby, I love you. I love you so much.

Lucas: I love you too.

Kate: Okay. Okay. I’m sorry. You take care of yourself, please, okay?

Lucas: Yeah, I will, I will.

Kate: Okay.

Lucas: [Sighs]

Ej: [Scoffs] So this is what you really want? To spend the rest of your days married to your very own kidnapper?

Sami: [Scoffs] Actually, I’m divorcing him.

Ej: My conviction was overturned.

Sami: Oh, please. That doesn’t prove that you were innocent.

Ej: Oh, samantha, when are you going to wake up and see what’s staring you right in the face?

Sami: You’re staring me right in the face with your crazy conspiracy theories about lucas. Listen, we can all see that you’re just doing that to deflect from your own guilt. You’re the psychopath who kidnapped me and then lied to me about it.

Belle: Sami, I think you’re wrong.

Sami: Of course you do. You’re his lawyer. You’re the one who got him off of the charges.

Belle: Ej was framed by a very powerful force.

Sami: Yes, of course, old scratch at it again. But all he did was make sure that a guilty man was sentenced to prison. In fact, it was the one time he was on the side of the angels.

Ej: Samantha, you have to see reason.

Sami: No, I don’T. I don’t have to see anything. What I know for sure–no one will ever change my mind– you are the one who kidnapped me.

Eric: Dad, I am not about to meddle in nicole’s relationship.

Roman: Nobody’s saying you should do that, okay? I’m just saying you need to make a decision about what you want–

Eric: Dad, I’ve already made my decision.

Roman: You sure about that? Because from what I can tell, you’re still thinking things over. Maybe you need to take a page from sami’s book–broken legs, broken planes–nothing comes between that girl and whatever she wants, and look, okay? Don’t get me wrong. I like rafe a lot. He is a good guy–a really good guy and a really good friend. But that doesn’t mean he is who nicole’s supposed to be with.

Eric: Nicole and I have already had our chance, and you see how that ended up?

Roman: Yeah, well, rafe and nicole had their chance to get married too, and they didn’T. Okay, now they postponed the wedding because rafe is leading the investigation into abigail’s death.

Eric: Which means he has his priorities in order.

Roman: Which also means that if you still have feelings for nicole, you got time to do something about it, and if it were me, I wouldn’t wanna miss the chance to say something– to talk to her about it, because I wouldn’t wanna regret it later down the road because I didn’T.

Rafe: Well, I think it’s great that abe and paulina grabbed the opportunity to get married when they could, because…you know, with lani confessing, you never know when life can change in an instant.

Nicole: I know. Life is uncertain. That is for sure. But our situation is nothing like abe and paulina’s, and, like, you’re under enough pressure as it is to get this case solved. So I don’t want you to feel like you have to make big plans for our wedding.

Rafe: Well, I’m definitely not feeling the pressure about that. Or is this about something else?

Nicole: Well, rafe and i plan on rescheduling our wedding soon.

Kate: Hmm, well, that wasn’t what I was getting at.

John: What are you getting at?

Kate: Well, eric, I’m sure you believe in signs.

Eric: Yeah, signs?

Kate: Yeah–you came back to salem, right? You were forced out of the priesthood, and then nicole postponed her wedding.

Roman: Kate, what are you doing?

Kate: I’m asking questions.

Roman: No, you’re not. You’re stirring the pot. We talked about this. It’s none of our business.

Rafe: Nicole, what are you saying? Are you avoiding making wedding plans because you don’t want to get married?

Chad: I never got to take abby to venice or any of the other places that we wanted to go. Either she couldn’t get away or I couldn’t get away or the kids were in school. Though, we always just put it off. You know, thinking about it, we had all this time. You know, the last conversation we had was about taking the– taking our kids to a movie, and taking that trip to boston to go see jack. You know, surprise him for his birthday. She wanted to go at night. But…

John: But?

Chad: It just seemed so last-minute, you know? And I just thought it would’ve been too much work to get the kids together and get to the airport. So I said–so I said why don’t we go the next morning? And she s–agreed. She said, “yeah, you know, what difference would a day make?”

[Chuckles] Well, you know, it turns out that it makes all the difference in the world.

[Sniffles]

[ Screaming ]

Chad: If we had gone to boston that night, abby would still be alive.

[Sniffles] I took the–I–I took the kids to a movie, and I left her alone.

John: No, no, no, chad, you didn’t have any idea what was gonna happen. There’s no way you could’ve known what was gonna happen. You just said that you were gonna take the kids to the movies that night?

Chad: Yeah, I was with abby in our room. I was getting ready before i went to go–I went to go get the kids.

[Sniffles]

John: Before you left… what was the last thing you said to each other?

Chad: [Sighs]

[Laughs] She told me that she loved me.

[Sobs]

[Sniffles] And I told her that i loved her too.

John: Mm-hmm.

Chad: I mean, the way that she looked at me and said it, it melts my heart, I mean, that smile… everything about her, I just, I– I took for granted.

John: What do you think you took for granted?

Chad: The amount of time that I would have with her.

[Sniffles] If I had only known, I wouldn’t have–I wouldn’t have wasted so much–so much time.

John: What do you think you wasted time on?

Chad: [Sniffles] Doing anything but loving her, and letting–letting her know how–how–how much she meant to me, and that she was my everything–telling her that she was my everything.

John: She knew. She knew, kid.

Chad: [Sobbing]

Ej: Fine, you want to be an idiot? Be my guest.

Sami: Oh. Thanks.

Ej: Satisfied?

Sami: Yes. Actually, I am. It’s exactly what I wanted. So belle, word of warning if you plan on staying in this house much longer: Just make sure you don’t get chained up in the basement. No, no, I’ll get the door myself, thanks. You’re gonna have to close it, though.

Ej: Okay. Like pulsing, electric shocks,

Marlena: I hope I’m not interrupting.

Chad: No, you’re not. Did you talk to ’em?

Marlena: I did. Thomas is pretty focused on that race car set.

Chad: [Chuckles] And charlotte?

Marlena: She asked me if it were true. She asked me if her mommy had died. I told her it was true, and she cried, and I rocked her and held her, and a moment later, she was back in denial, said she knew her mommy was going to be coming home.

Chad: Well, I should probably go get–

Marlena: Chad.

[Sighs] Look, they’re playing so well, and they’re distracted, and it’s nearly their bedtime. Why don’t you let them stay with us one more night?

Chad: Are you sure?

John: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. We love those kids.

Chad: [Chuckles] Thank you.

Marlena: Of course. Chad. I think you should stay as well.

Chad: No, I’m not–I don’t want to impose.

John: You’re not an imposition, you know that.

Marlena: No, you’re not. No, we would love to have you.

Chad: [Stammers] Thank you–okay. Thank you. That would be good.

Nicole: Eric.

Eric: Nicole, I–

Nicole: What are you doing here?

Eric: I came by because I wanted to ask you something.

Nicole: Well, can it wait? I’m sorry you came all the way over here, but it’s not a really good time, so…

Eric: Yeah, sure. Is everything okay?

Rafe: Hey! I got champagne. Hey, eric.

Eric: Rafe. Champagne? You guys look like you’re gonna celebrate something.

Rafe: Well, as a matter of fact, we are.

Nicole: [Giggles] We got married.

Eric: Married? Marri–married?

Rafe: Mm-hmm.

Eric: When?

Rafe: Yeah, we just snuck in right under the wire.

Nicole: Yeah, we just came from the courthouse.

Eric: Yeah, that’s great.

[Chuckles] Congratulations.

Rafe: Thank you.

Eric: Yeah, well, I’ll leave the two of you to celebrate your wedding night.

Rafe: Right.

[Both laugh]

Lucas: How’d it go?

Sami: Success!

Lucas: Yeah?

Sami: Yup!

Lucas: He signed ’em?

Sami: Oh, yeah, I got him to sign the papers.

Lucas: Perfect. Well, in that case…

[Hums] I had a whole big speech planned, but considering how long it took us to get to this point, I figured I’d just cut to the chase.

[Sighing] Samantha gene brady, will you marry me again?

Sami: [Laughs] Yes, lucas.

Lucas: Yes?

Sami: I will. You want to put it on?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me do that. Ow.

Sami: Ooh, watch your hand.

Lucas: That’s all right. That’s all right.

Sami: Aw…

Lucas: It fits. It fits perfect.

Sami: Just like you.

[Laughs] Yay!

Ej: Now that I’ve signed those blasted divorce papers, I suppose all that’s left is for samantha to file them, and then–

Belle: And then you’ll be divorced.

Ej: And she’s lucas’ problem. I could–I could almost pity him. So where were we?

Belle: No. Hold on a second. What are you doin’?

Victor: Well, if you think you’re going to cheer me up, you’re wrong.

Maggie: Oh, I’m not gonna even try to cheer you up when you’re in this kind of a mood. Victor, I know you’re upset, but one, there’s nothing you can dobout it and, two, it’s not the end of the world.

Victor: Thank you, mary poppins.

Maggie: Victor, this situation is complicated and it’s upsetting. But we’re talking about a baby. A new life.

Victor: A new life that was spawned by a woman who tried to electrocute me in my own bathtub. And now my grandson is going to have her hanging around his neck for the rest of his life. Get me another drink.

Belle: Were you leaving?

Shawn: I mean, not now that you’re here. I’m glad that you came. Should we grab a coffee or something?

Belle: Oh, I didn’t come to see you.

Ej: Looks like you’ve been caught red-handed, clyde. What are you up to?

Maggie: Victor, you have every right to be upset. But it’s just not good for you to feel sorry for yourself, to brood. That’s not who you are.

Victor: You said there was nothing I can do about it. I hate that.

Maggie: Yes, well, of course you do. And yes, there’s nothing we can do about that baby being born, but you can– you can stand by shawn. You can let shawn know that you’re by his side when he’s trying to put his life back together. And, victor, I know you hate looking at the bright side, but won’t jan be going back to prison again? And then– and then maybe shawn and belle can–can work it out.

Victor: [Harumphs]

Brady: The police think it might’ve been a robbery.

Leo: Oh, please. Please still be here. Oh. Yes. I’d have preferred an alamainian emerald, but you will do just fine. What a tragedy. Can’t imagine how hard this has been on her family.

Brady: Come on, stark. Cut the crap.

Leo: What is that supposed to mean?

Brady: It means that you went to a lot of trouble to inflict pain upon chad and abigail. Maybe you felt that they didn’t pay enough.

Leo: What the hell are you accusing me of?

Sami: Oh, okay. Thank you.

Lucas: What are you doing here? I thought your flight was delayed.

Sami: It was, but then we made up time in the air.

Lucas: I really wanted to pick you up. I wanted to be there for you.

Sami: I know you did, but you have a lot going on, and you’re still grieving about abby. Hey, tell me how jennifer is doing.

Lucas: Oh, she’s barely hanging on, like we all are.

Sami: Which is why I took a cab. And I just left my luggage downstairs.

Lucas: All right, let me grab it for you.

Sami: What? No, no. Hey, wait a second. You’re not going anywhere until you answer my question, lucas. What is going on in here? It looks like a tornado hit this room.

Lucas: Um…

Belle: I’m actually here to see my mom. Chad’s at the house right now. Thomas and charlotte spent the night last night, and he’s telling them about abigail.

Shawn: Well, god help him.

Belle: Yeah, so I thought my mom could recommend a children’s counselor in case chad thought they needed one. Anyway, I should go.

Maggie: We’re somewhat in the same situation. I know what to do for chad and for jennifer and jack down the road, to be there, to listen and talk about abigail whenever they’re ready. But it won’t be for a while. And you can be there for shawn and belle when they’re ready. But not now.

Victor: No, we’re worthless.

Maggie: Well, to them. But hopefully not to each other. We can–we can to–we can try to treasure whatever time we have together.

Bonnie: Okay, so well, we’re just going to leave you two at it, unless you guys like to play. I mean, four-handed is much more fun.

Maggie: You know what? I would love to.

Bonnie: Really?

Victor: Really?

Maggie: Yes, victor, really.

Bonnie: [Chuckles]

Clyde: Why would you care what’s in this bag, ej? You know it ain’t none of your business.

Ej: Come on, clyde, I think you might have an illegal weapon in there.

Clyde: Well, now, that would violate my parole.

Ej: Oh, yes, of course, I forgot. You’ve been rehabilitated. You’re a new man.

Clyde: Absolutely.

Ej: So the way you just reacted right now, you know, like a low-life scum with something to hide, that was just reflex. That’s your lunch in the bag. Or maybe your knitting.

Clyde: Did you hear me say it’s none of your business?

Ej: Au contraire, it’s very much my business. You see, I think you’ve acquired said weapon in order to finish me off.

Ej: Well, you did try and have me killed once before.

Ej: I really recommend you drop that glib crap with me. Before I got out of prison, you threatened to hurt my family. And my family was hurt. I’m not part of the legal system, so I don’t care about due process. If I think that you stabbed my sister-in-law, well, my last name is dimera. And we’re totally an eye-for-an-eye kind of family.

Brady: I’m accusing you of being a cold, heartless creep.

Chloe: You forgot cowardly.

Brady: You’re right, my bad. You’re a cold, heartless, cowardly creep that has zero, zero compassion for anybody but yourself. So this whole, “it’s to tragic. I can’t imagine how hard it this is on their family” makes me want to puke. You hated chad and abigail, you made him out to be a cheating husband, and you rubbed abigail’s nose in it. So don’t pretend to me that you’re grief-stricken.

Leo: Once again, I get blamed for things, even things that aren’t my fault.

Chloe: What are you talking about?

Leo: I don’t want to speak ill of the dead or her grieving husband, but they started it. When they destroyed what I had with craig, they made an enemy for life.

Sami: Lucas, what happened? Did you call the police? Were you robbed?

Lucas: No, no, it wasn’t anything like that.

Sami: Well, then why don’t you tell me what it was like?

Lucas: I–it was– it was me, all right? I–I did this.

Sami: You did this? I know you can be a slob, but this is ridiculous.

Lucas: I was looking for something.

Sami: Okay, what?

Brady: The cops think it could’ve been a robbery gone wrong.

Brady: It was in the paper this morning. They found some jewelry and some cash that was taken from the house. The cops think if they can find the jewelry they’ll find the person who killed abigail.

Lucas: I was looking for some jewelry.

Sami: Jewelry? Okay, what jewelry?

Shawn: Look, I just–I want to thank you for being here when jan was in labor.

Belle: Well, I knew that the baby might not be make it. And I know how hard that would be for you. Because I know better than anyone what being a father means to you.

Shawn: Yeah, but belle, you– look, you waited. You waited with me. And–and I know how hard that was for you, so–so thank you.

Belle: No need to thank me.

Shawn: Look, when I–when i thought that the baby wasn’t going to make it, look, you were there, and you– belle, you held me, and I felt like there was hope for the two of us, and… look, I’m just hoping that you felt the same way too. Fishing helps ease my mind.

Maggie: You know, this is nice. I don’t know why, but sometimes time just kind of sits heavy in late afternoon.

Bonnie: I’m sorry. Are you guys up for this? I mean, I know you have a lot on your mind and everything.

Maggie: No, but we just haven’t given up hope.

Nancy: Oh, that’s good. I know my chloe still misses him terribly.

Victor: It’s a good thing she can expunge her grief in brady’s bed. You dealt, right? I’ll open for 500.

Brady: “They started it”? What the hell is this? Third grade? You realize I’m not talking about getting pantsed in the hallway, leo.

Leo: Yeah, I know you’re not. I found the love of my life, and on a whim chad and abigail set out to destroy my once chance at happiness.

Chloe: No, I think you destroyed your one chance of happiness when tried conning my father into marrying you even though you already had a husband.

Leo: Getting married was your father’s idea. It would’ve crushed him if I turned him down.

Brady: Once again, reality just escapes you. Everything is everyone else’s fault, and you were never to blame.

Chloe: You think that sonny would disagree with that. I think that sonny would blame leo for drugging him and then publishing pictures of the two of you together in bed.

Leo: That was consensual. Once again, sonny is lying.

Brady: You know what I don’t get, though? You’ve spent all this time and energy into getting back at chad and abigail and sonny and will but not me. I’m the one who blew up your sham of a wedding. And I was very proud to do it.

Belle: I did feel it too.

Shawn: I knew it. Belle, this–we could–

Belle: And the baby was born, and you went straight to jan.

Shawn: Yeah, well, that’s because I knew that ej was there to hold your hand.

Belle: Don’t make this about ej.

Shawn: Belle, of course I went to jan. I mean, she just– she just gave birth. All right, the baby was premature, and she was scared. I couldn’t just leave her there wondering whether or not the baby was alive or dead. Hey, but then I came back here. I came back here, and you were gone. And I cannot help but think that you–you left here with ej, and you went back to his place.

Belle: I just want to forget about everything. I want this. I want you. Take me to bed. I did, and then we heard chad screaming. And I saw abigail lying there.

Shawn: I know. I know. Look, I’m sorry. Look, I know what you’ve been through.

Belle: Well, it’s nothing compared to what chad’s going through. Who would do something like that?

Shawn: Look, I swear to god we are going to find out.

Belle: We?

Shawn: I spoke to rafe. I asked him to put me on the case. Look, we’re going to find out what happened that night.

Sami: No, obviously there is something going on. You’re a wreck. And I know it’s not just because of abby.

Sami: You can’t tell me what it is? Are you serious? After everything that I have told you? I’ve told you–I–I mean, I can’t even list it all. I told you about what a disaster my marriage to ej was. And you know what? It’s a good thing I did tell you, because telling you, talking to you helped me move on with my life. Lucas, I love you, and I’ll love you no matter what. Lucas: Okay. All right. I have something to confess. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Belle: You’re going back to work?

Shawn: Yeah, of course I am.

Belle: Well, there’s no “of course” about it. Jan’s going back to statesville. Even with help, you’re going to have your hands full just with the baby.

Shawn: Look, jan’s not– not going back.

Belle: What?

Shawn: At least–at least not right now.

Belle: Okay. All right. She has already played her whole high-risk pregnancy get-out-of-jail-free card, and she’s not pregnant anymore. And she is still a dangerous, violent psychopath. She’s not pregnant.

Shawn: Look, the warden–the warden extended her release just so that she can be with the baby a little bit longer.

Belle: What? How did that happen?

Shawn: Because he’s premature, and he needs–he needs jan’s breast milk.

Belle: And the warden just knows that? What, he’s like a really woke warden?

Shawn: No, kayla, she spoke to him, and she explained the situation.

Belle: Kayla? Well, I think she and i are going to have to have a nice a little chat.

Shawn: Look, she–she did it because I asked her to.

Belle: W…wow. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Jan always has an angle to work, and she always knows how to get you to work it for her.

Shawn: Look, belle, this is for the baby’s sake, all right? It’s temporary. It’s only until the baby gains a little bit more weight; that’s all.

Belle: Right, and then until the baby’s christened, and then until he goes to school, and then until he gets his driver’s license.

Shawn: Look, we’re talking about my son.

Belle: Yes, your son, the living ammunition jan uses to make you dance attendance for the rest of your life.

Shawn: I’m just trying to do what’s best for him. That’s all.

Belle: And she knows that. I’m sorry, I– I really try– struggle to not let my feelings about jan spill over onto your son.

Shawn: I know it isn’t easy.

Belle: So… did you decide on a name yet?

Shawn: Yeah. Look, we– we I named him shawn.

Nancy: The fact that chloe is now with brady does not mean she doesn’t care deeply for philip.

Victor: I agree, like she cared deeply for brady all the time she was with philip.

Nancy: And what exactly is that supposed to mean?

Maggie: It means that victor is doing his best to make everyone wildly uncomfortable. He’s so good at it.

Victor: I thought I was giving chloe a compliment. She seems to sense that whether she’s with my son or my grandson, eventually she’s going to drive that lucky young man to drugs, distraction, or out the door.

Bonnie: Okay, all right, you know what? Nancy, just ignore him; he’s trying to bait you.

Nancy: He’s insulting my daughter. And I’m sorry, but neither your son nor your grandson has led a blameless life.

Victor: “Neither my son nor my grandson has led a blameless life.” When “neither” is in the third person plural, it’s takes “have.”

Bonnie: He likes to torture people with grammar. Please.

Maggie: Well, I guess he also likes sleeping in the guest room, because that’s where he’s headed.

Victor: What do you know? We won, red. What a good idea you had, bonnie. Pinochle, a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

[Laughter] Don’t you think?

Clyde: For the last time, I did not kill your sister-in-law. And if I had wanted to send you a message, believe me, you would have gotten it, and you would have known it was from me.

Sami: Okay. Just tell me.

Lucas: I was looking for a ring.

Sami: A ring?

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah, I didn’t want to tell you like this after everything that’s happened, but I was going to ask you to marry me.

Sami: [Gasps]

Clyde: You know, right now I’m wondering why you’re so paranoid.

Ej: Paranoid?

Clyde: Yeah. Why would I want to hurt anyone in your family? You gave me your word that you’d keep your mouth shut about our little arrangement. As far as I know, you have, unless you have told someone.

Belle: Everyone said that you were shot by a mugger in the park. You’re saying clyde did it?

Ej: He didn’t pull the trigger. He lured me to the park and threatened me. When things became heated, his man shot me, and then they left me there to die. No, I haven’t told anyone.

Clyde: Well, then, you got absolutely nothing to worry about. And I got a date.

Victor: You sure you don’t want to play some more? We’re having such fun.

Nancy: I’ve had more fun doing laundry.

Victor: Oh, you found a new career?

Bonnie: Oh, my gosh.

Nancy: I am so sorry to leave you alone with him, but I have a date.

Victor: How brave of you to try to put your shattered life together again.

Bonnie: Say hi to clyde for me.

Victor: What? You’re not talking about clyde weston.

Maggie: Victor.

Victor: Look, I know you’re desperate, but this is the bottom of the barrel.

Maggie: Okay, victor, that’s enough.

Victor: Maggie, the man had sonny stabbed in the back. Even she deserves better than that.

Nancy: I’m sorry, mr. Kiriakis, but given your history I don’t think you have the right to pass judgment on anyone.

Victor: I was just trying to help you out. I’m worried about you. I understand it’s very difficult to get a relationship going with a sociopathic criminal.

Maggie: Nancy, I’ll walk you to the door.

Nancy: Thank you. How do you put up with that?

Maggie: Massive denial.

Victor: You know, I always thought that dr. Wellsley was the bottom of the barrel.

Bonnie: Oh, wesley!

Victor: Oh, whatever. She sure can pick them.

Bonnie: Well, not everybody can be as lucky as maggie.

Bonnie: [Scoffs]

Shawn: Look, the name was jan’s idea.

Belle: Yeah, of course it was. And then you went along with it.

Shawn: I guess, yeah, I did I–

Belle: You know, I have to go, okay? I have to go talk to my mom. I hope you and jan and little shawn are very happy.

Brady: I mean, I’m the one that recruited sonny and will. I was the one that brought them to town, had them tell craig about your past. I mean, he would’ve never known about your other husband if it hadn’t been for me, so why don’t you just let everybody else alone and focus on me?

Chloe: I think that’s a great idea, except you should think of something new this time. I think the whole scandalous photoshop sex selfies are getting old.

Brady: Agreed. I think we should do this the old-fashioned way. Just a bare-knuckle fistfight. How about right here? How about right now?

Leo: Ugh. It would hardly be a fair fight. You’re bigger; you’re stronger than I am. Besides, you’re wrong; I’m no longer interested in revenge, I’ve given it up.

Chloe: Yeah, right.

Leo: I mean it. It weighs on me that those photos of chad in drag and the little memoir I wrote upset abigail, and now she’s gone, and I can’t tell her that I’m sorry.

Chloe: Well, that’s very sad for you.

Leo: I can’t change the past, so all I can do is look forward. I’m trying to move on with my life, I would appreciate it if the two of you would let me.

Chloe: Did you believe that?

Brady: Not one word.

Lucas: Before you came back, I asked your father for his blessing.

Sami: What?

Lucas: And I got a ring. And I was going to give it to you when you came back. I was going to surprise you, but I–I– I don’t know what I did with it. I think I lost it.

Sami: So you tore this room apart?

Lucas: I panicked, okay?

Sami: It’s okay. Lucas, you shouldn’t be doing this right now anyway. You’re still dealing with everything that happened with abby. And I can see that you haven’t been sleeping.

Lucas: I just– I feel bad, okay? I feel bad about everything and things that have happened, and I–I made a mess out of everything.

Sami: It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. I don’t need a ring on my finger as long as I know what’s in your heart.

Lucas: You know what’s in my heart. I want you to be my wife.

Sami: Lucas, I know you don’t want to hear this. Right now my answer is no. I can’t marry you.

Sami: It’s not about that. It’s I’m still married to ej. Remember? He tore up those divorce papers.

Sami: I think that I’ll be able to confront him face-to-face, and then he won’t be able to weasel out of it.

Lucas: Well, I just– I’m not wild about you being alone with the guy, so why don’t we just let the lawyers handle this, okay?

Sami: I tried that. It didn’t work. No, I think I have to go with the direct approach. Don’t worry about me. But will you get the door for me?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah.

Belle: Mwah! See you later.

Lucas: All right.

Ej: So if there’s anything I can do… right. Tell charlotte and thomas I love them. And, chad, I love you too. Right. He sounded awful.

Belle: Oh, well, my mom cancelled all her appointments. She’s going to go home, spend some time with chad and the kids.

Ej: So what is it you’re not telling me? This is about shawn, isn’t it?

Belle: I ran into shawn at the hospital. Guess who’s not going back to prison.

Ej: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Belle: No. We knew she’d find a way to keep her hooks in shawn. And that’s where they’re going to stay for the rest of his life.

Bonnie: Ooh. You owe me 15 bucks. Want to play again?

Victor: Sure.

Bonnie: Cool.

Victor: I don’t think maggie’s talking to me.

Bonnie: [Chuckles] No.

Victor: Well, sorry if I offended your friend.

Bonnie: Well, she’s tough. And besides, I don’t think you can date clyde weston and not expect a little blowback, you know?

Victor: I’m in a foul mood.

Bonnie: Well, victor, who could blame you? I mean, you have a new baby in the family; everybody should be over the moon. But instead it’s like, “my grandson is going to have to deal with that woman for the rest of his life.” Jan spears. Ugh.

Victor: My sentiments exactly.

Bonnie: I mean, right? The woman has had way too many sequels. It’s like “alien 47.” The alien is still disgusting, but now she’s also boring. Because you know the alien’s never going to have a change of heart. The alien is never going to say anything funny. It’s just going to sit there waiting for that next crappy thing to happen. And you? You can’t share a nice meal. You can’t have a happy thought, because in the back of your mind it’s just sitting there. Whose chest is she going to pop out of next? Sorry. I know. Bonnie lockhart running her stupid mouth again.

Victor: What you said, it’s exactly what it’s like. Bonnie lockhart, unexpected depth.

Nancy: [Laughs] I don’t care if leo stark put his hand on ten bibles and swore that he’s seen the light. He is like– he’s like florence nightingale when it comes to nursing a grudge.

Chloe: Amen to that.

Nancy: Oh, and by the way, he told me to tell you that you’re on “his list.”

Brady: What list?

Nancy: I don’t know; he wasn’t specific. But it sounded like it was an enemies list.

Brady: Well, I’m sure as hell on that then.

[Tense music]

Clyde: Well, you look beautiful as always. Are you ready?

Nancy: As ever.

Clyde: Nice to see you two again.

Chloe: Ugh. I find it very, very, very not fun to be civil to that man.

Brady: With very good reason.

Chloe: It’s not only that he creeps me out, belle told me to keep my mom away from him. She said that he’s definitely bad news.

Clyde: I have something for you.

Nancy: Really?

Clyde: I didn’t get it wrapped, because I wanted to put it on you myself.

Nancy: Oh, my god, clyde. It’s lovely.

Clyde: Just like you.

Chloe: So belle me that you two are legally separated now. I’m so sorry.

Shawn: Thanks. It–it wasn’t my idea. I was actually hoping that we would be able to– to work things out once the baby was born.

Brady: Doesn’t seem like you think that anymore, though.

Shawn: I’m just afraid that– I’m afraid this whole situation is just pushing us further and further apart.

Belle: So shawn arranged for the warden to let her stay in the hospital with the baby, shawn brady jr.

Ej: They named the baby shawn?

Belle: It wasn’t bad enough that my worst enemy has my husband’s only son, but now the baby is his namesake.

Ej: I’m so sorry. What can I do?

Belle: Well, we could finish what we started the other night. Let’s go upstairs right now.

Sami: He has to know there’s no way I’d stay married to a man who lied to me about kidnapping me.

Clyde: Pretty surprising, huh? Yeah, I just stand back and watch you and ciara. Learned from the best. But, you know, being around baby bo so much, seeing how much he needs both his parents makes me think of abigail dimera’s children losing their mom.

Ben: Those poor kids.

Clyde: Yeah. I mean, it’s a tragedy for the whole family, but for those kids. Well, I gotta go.

Brady: Lucas.

Ben: Just thinking about abigail. Just how sad it is that she’s really gone, especially for her kids.

Ciara: Yeah. It’s–it’s really heartbreaking to think about thomas and charlotte growing up without a mother.

Ben: I tried to do that. I tried to take abigail away from her family.

Ben: When I think how close I came to being where chad is right now… I just wish I could tell him how sorry I am.

Ciara: What do you have going on this afternoon?

Ciara: Okay. Well, I am going to the hospital to meet our new nephew. Would you like to come with me?

Ben: I would love that.

Jan: You can’t let them do this. I haven’t even held our son.

Shawn: Look jan, I don’t think the warden is gonna see that as a good enough reason for you just to not go back to prison.

Jan: Tell him that our baby needs my milk.

Jan: Premature babies are at a far greater risk of infection. Nothing compares to breast milk for strengthening our son’s immune system.

Lucas: You’re right, okay, you’re right. This is about abigail.

Chad: I’m sorry for lashing out.

Ej: You don’t have to apologize.

Chad: I know that I have to do this, but I have no idea how I’m going to. How do you tell your children that they’re never gonna see their mother again?

[Soft dramatic music]

Abigail was reading… “the hobbit” to thomas at bedtime. She had funny voices for each of their characters.

[Chuckles] Thomas just couldn’t get enough of it. And then charlotte is just… she’s a daredevil all of a sudden. And last week, she wanted to– she wanted to climb the tree outside of her window. You know, the big one? You know which one I’m talking about?

Ej: Yeah, sure.

Chad: So we took her out there and abby boosted her up thinking that she would get half way up and then wanna stop. No, I mean, she climbed almost to the top of it. And then abby, you know, kept telling her to come down…

[Chuckles] And she refused. Dared her mom to come up and get her.

Ej: [Laughs]

Chad: And abby did. She did even though she was absolutely terrified of heights.

They were so happy together. They were in heaven.

Ej: You’re not alone. You have your family.

Chad: [Gasps] I can’T. I can’t do this. I can’t do this without her. I…

Ej: I know it seems impossible right now, but you will find the strength to go on. You’ll finish that book with thomas. You’ll climb trees with charlotte. And everyone who loves you will help and support you, but you’re their father, chad, and they need you now more than ever, okay?

Chad: [Sobbing]

Belle: Well, as you know, ej has been really supportive through this whole nightmare with jan, and he knew I went to the hospital when jan was in labor, and came to check on me, and then after the baby was born, I asked him to get me the hell out of there.

Chloe: I don’t blame you.

Belle: So we went to dinner and had a couple of bottles of wine and ended up back at the mansion, and we were almost at the point of no return when we heard chad screaming for help.

Chloe: And if that hadn’t happened…

Belle: Oh, well, we’d have ended up in bed together. No question.

Chloe: So does that mean that you and shawn are over?

Jan: So?

Shawn: So I spoke with kayla, and she agrees. She agrees you should stay here with the baby, but just, you know, for a little while longer. So she’s gonna call the warden right now.

Jan: Oh, my god, shawn, thank you. Thank you so much.

Jan: Being a new mother yourself, you know how much a child needs its mother, especially in the beginning. I haven’t even gotten to hold our baby yet. I can’t even touch him.

Ciara: That–it must be really hard.

Jan: It’s torture. If I wanna see him, I have to walk down the hall and look at him in a glass box. That’s the closest I can get to our son, but yours is right there. So if it’s not too much trouble, maybe–maybe I can hold him?

[Soft dramatic music]

Belle: So jan is living in my house, and she just turned my office into a nursery, and my mother has just signed on to be her therapist.

Chloe: You’re kidding.

Belle: Oh, no, no she’s even making house calls because, you know, jan has an ankle bracelet. So I just couldn’t take it anymore. No, I had to create some distance.

Chloe: I’m so sorry, but do you see where this is going at all or?

Belle: Honestly, I really don’t know. So much has happened so fast, and I’m just feeling really just torn. You know, obviously, I still love shawn, but I just hate that he’s let this conniving, manipulative lunatic just take over.

Leo: Uh, I suppose that would be best. I can trust you to hold up your end of the deal and not, say, disappear without a trace? You did mention that you were on parole. If you were to take off, I’d have to tell the police my version of what happened and, well, that could get messy.

Julie: It doesn’t matter who pulled the trigger. The bastard got what he deserved.

Lani: I’m deciding for myself. Whatever tr did or didn’t do, I am an officer of the law and I shot an unarmed man. And I have to answer for that.

Julie: No, you don’T.

Abe: Sweetheart.

Lani: But coming clean today and speaking my truth is the first time that I have felt right since the night of that shooting. I love you guys. Baby, will you drive me to the station?

Paulina: Oh. I should go with them.

Chanel: Hey.

Allie: Nobody touched the cake except for your mom and abe. Should we box it up? Bring it home in case they wanna celebrate later?

Chanel: Yeah, I think they would appreciate that. But the cake movers, they took the truck back to the bakery, so…

Allie: Okay. Well, that’s okay. We can do it ourselves.

Johnny: Uh, I can help. Whatever you guys need.

Allie: Great.

Eric: Hey.

Nicole: Hmm?

Eric: You okay?

Nicole: Yeah. Just thinking about lani. I grew up watching my father abuse my mother almost every single day. And that’s when abe came into my life. All those calls he took, coming to my house. And I know lani didn’t grow up watching that, but in the end, we both made the same decision.

Eric: Okay, but you didn’t kill your father.

Nicole: Yeah, but I willed him to die. And the only difference is I have no regrets.

Eric: So what happened here today brought up all those emotions.

Nicole: It did.

Paulina: I had to watch my baby girl grow up from a distance. I wasn’t there for her, not as a mother. Lani has to do the same thing if those babies are forced to grow up without her.

Julie: Oh, my word, the babies.

Olivia: They’re with the babysitter, aren’t they?

Julie: Well, yes, but the babysitter is expecting eli and lani to be back by now.

Theo: I’ll go relieve her. I’ll watch the kids for as long as they need me to.

Julie: Please let me go with you. I could use a little carver and jules time.

Abe: All right, thank you. Thank you both. Thank you.

Paulina: [Sighs] So how you doing, mama?

Olivia: I still have something to say about what you did.

Lani: Please have this typed up for me and then I’ll sign it. Why aren’t you saying anything?

Eli: Because I don’t know how to live without you.

Lani: Please don’T. Please don’t make this harder than it already is.

Eli: Am I making it harder on you? Good. Lani, once you sign that statement, there’s no going back. Look, maybe I don’t have the right to ask you this, but if you won’t to do it for paulina, will you do it for me? Will you do it for our kids? Baby, I can take this statement and I can rip it up right now. We can pretend that none of this ever happened. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Roman: Okay, put that stuff in the corner there. Kate and I will take it back from the back there later.

Roman: Thanks for your help, nicole.

Nicole: Yeah, of course.

Eric: Hey, thank you for helping us take the leftovers to the shelter so it wouldn’t go to waste.

Nicole: It’s my pleasure. I used to go to st. Luke’s almost every day when I was a secretary there. Feels like six lifetimes ago.

Eric: Yeah, try two priesthoods ago for me.

Nicole: Well, at least you can joke about it after how things went down.

Eric: Yeah, well, I didn’t really have a choice but to accept it and move on. I keep reminding myself it was just god’s will.

Kate: Well… so abe and paulina have another wedding debacle.

Roman: Yeah, but at least they got to make it official before lani’s confession.

Kate: Yeah, I know. I feel for her, though. I mean, that’s an impossible situation: Facing prison or your mother does.

Roman: Yeah, those are two gutsy women.

Kate: So what do you think is going to happen to her?

Roman: To lani?

Kate: Mm-hmm.

Roman: I don’t know, but at the very least, it is gonna be hard for her to keep her badge. She did shoot an unarmed man and lied about it afterward.

Kate: Yeah. Yeah, but I mean, he was an abuser, a criminal.

Roman: Yeah, and that should mitigate the charge, but it all depends on whether trask wants to make an example of lying. I mean, nobody wants to look soft on police shootings.

Kate: No. You know, I understand it isn’t technically self-defense, but she just didn’t seem aware of what she was doing, you know, when she pulled that trigger. So wouldn’t that be considered exculpatory?

Roman: Exculpatory?

Kate: Yes. Yes. I mean, if someone is not in, you know, the right state of mind–say they’re under the influence– wouldn’t that indicate that they didn’t have intent?

Roman: Have you been secretly studying law books at bedtime?

Kate: You know exactly what I’ve been doing at bedtime.

Eric: So…

[Awkward laughter]

Nicole: Oh, well, I guess if that’s all, I should get going.

Eric: You know what? We didn’t eat. Why don’t you stay here with us and have lunch? You know, that is, if you don’t already have something planned.

Nicole: Well, I mean–

[Stomach growls]

[Laughter]

Eric: Is that your stomach I hear rumbling?

Nicole: Maybe.

Eric: Then stay, eat.

Nicole: Okay. Yeah, I guess I could use a bowl of that clam chowder. Thank you.

Eric: All right.

Nicole: Yeah, of course.

Chanel: [Sighs] Okay, you could put it right on the table.

Johnny: Look, I’m really sorry about all this.

Chanel: Why? You had nothing to do with it.

Johnny: I mean, I’m the whole reason tr even came to town. If I hadn’t been working with him on my movie–

Chanel: You had no idea who he was. Nobody blames you.

Allie: Yeah, and nobody blames lani either. I mean, that’s why we were all so ready to keep that secret.

Chanel: I was so upset when I thought my mom might be going to prison, but now I don’t feel any better. It could be my sister.

Theo: Every time I thought they were going to sleep, the other one will wake ’em up.

Julie: Mm-hmm. Welcome to the wonderful world of twins.

Theo: [Chuckles] I don’t know how eli and lani do it. And how is he gonna manage on his own if lani goes to prison?

Julie: Darling, we all have to pray that lani’s gonna be exonerated. And if she isn’t, I think there are enough hands and hearts in this family to get the job done until our darling girl comes back to us.

Paulina: Mama, I know you have something to say about all of this, but I just can’t hear it right now.

Olivia: Oh, you will hear it. I have never been prouder of you.

Paulina: Proud?

Olivia: Yes. You made the biggest sacrifice a mother could make when lani was born. You gave her up to protect her.

Abe: And now–now you’ve done it all over again.

Olivia: I’m sure lani is proud to have you as a mother.

Paulina: That’s–that’s kind of you both to say, but it sure didn’t turn out to be the right thing now, did it? Oh, not to mention I lied to the police and to our family. And out of all the promises that I made to you that I would never lie to you again, I just left you completely in the dark.

Abe: I wasn’t exactly in the dark.

Lani: [Exhales sharply] If you tear up my statement, eli, you’ll be tampering with evidence.

Eli: I’m not worried about that right now.

Lani: If I– eli, if I keep going on with this lie, everyone at that wedding will have to lie for me.

Eli: Lani, they all raised their hands. They said that they would.

Lani: But even– even if I let them do that, eli, do you really think that there is any way in hell that this lie could stay a secret? I mean, with all those people knowing? And johnny dimera was recording it, for god’s sake. Eli, there’s no– there’s no turning back. I have to face the truth and deal with the consequences.

Paulina: What do you mean you weren’t in the dark?

Olivia: Honey. Honey, I’m gonna give you two a little alone time, okay?

Abe: When I woke up in the hospital, I knew that I remembered something that happened when I was semiconscious after– after tr’s attack. I heard you say, “what have you done?”

Paulina: Oh, I thought you were out.

Abe: Look, I just didn’t understand, but the more I thought about it, the more–the more I thought that lani was the one who really shot tr.

Paulina: So you knew all this time?

Abe: No. I talked to eli about my suspicions, and then he spoke to lani. And when he came back, he assured me that I was wrong, that lani was innocent. But you saw the way he acted today.

Paulina: Mm-hmm.

Abe: I think he knew.

Paulina: You think that lani told him the truth?

Abe: Yes. Yes, I do. That eli lied to me to protect his wife. And, well, I believed him because I didn’t want to imagine the outcome that–the outcome lani’s facing right now.

Eli: Baby, do you have any idea how long you can be locked up? How hard it can be for you inside as a cop?

Lani: Of course I know.

Eli: And do you know that by the time you get out, our children could be teenagers.

Lani: Part of the reason I am doing this is for jules and carver. You know, honey, I wanna be an example that they can be proud of.

Eli: You are, lani! You are! You don’t have to go to prison for that.

Lani: Eli, don’t you– don’t you see? Ever since the moment I pulled that trigger, I have been living in my own prison. Seeing tr everywhere that I looked. Hating myself.

Eli: You’ve told the truth to everyone that matters– your friends, your family.

Lani: And what about my responsibility to the badge?

Eli: [Sighs] Baby, we’re cops, but we’re human beings first. Sometimes the choices that we make are to put the people that we love above the law.

Lani: Mm. You’re talking about when I helped kristen.

Eli: Yeah. What’s the difference this time?

Lani: It was wrong for me to do it then, and it is wrong for me to do it now. Eli, I should have told the truth from the beginning. I–I wouldn’t have ruined another wedding, I wouldn’t have let another lie fester between my dad and paulina. I just–I hope that they can forgive me.

Johnny: What are you doing?

Allie: It’s tradition to freeze a piece of the wedding cake.

Johnny: For what?

Allie: So the bride and the groom can eat it on their first wedding anniversary. You never heard of this?

Johnny: Actually, no. No, I haven’T. Chanel, do you think they have that tradition in italy?

Chanel: I–I don’t know.

Allie: Why would you say that?

Johnny: Because, well, it just would’ve been nice to relive our wedding day one year later. We had our wedding dinner in this little osteria, and the owners were husband and wife. They’ve been together, like, 75 years. They made us this tiny cake. It was so delicious. You remember that?

Chanel: Mascarpone and lemon curd.

Johnny: Yeah, I wonder if they got a slice in the freezer somewhere with our names on it.

Roman: You know, one of the things that I appreciated about salem is that no matter how many wedding disasters we witness, hope springs eternal. We never give up on love, right?

Kate: Well, speaking of, there’s another salem wedding coming up, right? When’s a big day, nicole?

Nicole: Well, rafe and i were planning to get married this week, but we postponed it.

Kate: Really? Why?

Nicole: Because he’s leading the investigation into abigail’s murder.

Kate: Oh, god. Of course. That was so, so tragic. Has he zeroed in on any suspects?

Nicole: He hasn’t said anything to me yet. I don’t know.

Eric: Just doesn’t seem real.

Roman: I wish to god it weren’T.

Kate: Yeah. Well, maybe it’s just another reminder that life is short and you should be getting your happiness when it’s right in front of you.

Nicole: Well, rafe and i plan on rescheduling our wedding soon.

Kate: Hmm. Well, that wasn’t what I was getting at.

Roman: What were you getting at?

Kate: Well, eric, I’m sure you believe in signs.

Eric: Um, signs?

Kate: Yeah. You came back to salem, right, you were forced out of the priesthood, and then nicole postponed her wedding.

Roman: Kate, what are you doing?

Kate: I’m asking questions.

Roman: No, you’re not. You’re stirring the pot. We talked about this. It’s none of our business.

Kate: Well, actually, I’m just noting that when nicole accepted rafe’s proposal, she didn’t have all the facts, like the fact that eric is now back on the market.

Nicole: I am in love with rafe. We are very happy.

Kate: If you say so.

Nicole: You know, aside from the fact that this is embarrassing, I can’t believe you brought this up, kate. You’re presuming that eric wants to be with me, which he does not.

Kate: Well, how do you know that? Have you asked him?

Nicole: [Scoffs] We hit the bike trails every weekend

Nicole: Of course I haven’t asked eric that.

Kate: I’ll ask him.

Nicole: Oh, for god’s sake.

Kate: Eric, would you like to get back together with nicole?

Roman: Kate, stop it, all right? You’re embarrassing them both.

Kate: Okay. You haven’t given your answer.

Eric: Nicole’s capable of making her own decisions, and I’m sure she would appreciate if you would just drop this.

Nicole: Yes, I would. Thank you.

Kate: So you’re not going to answer the question. Duly noted.

Paulina: Big mama, you must be exhausted. Let’s get you back to my apartment.

Olivia: I don’t wanna go back to your apartment.

Paulina: Why not?

Olivia: For one thing, it’s your wedding night.

Abe: Oh, it’s still daytime.

Olivia: And there’s someplace else that we’re needed right now.

Johnny: Why are you giving me the patented allie horton death glare?

Allie: Because you’re being extremely annoying and insensitive. Reminding me that the two of you were this beautiful, married couple who was gonna be together for, like, 75 years?

Chanel: I don’t know about you two, but I am starving, and there is this giant cake just sitting here.

Allie: You want some cake?

Chanel: I don’t think my mom and abe would mind.

Johnny: It’s like you’re reading my mind.

Chanel: I’m gonna go grab some plates.

[Cell phone chimes]

Allie: What’s wrong?

Chanel: Uh, you two can stay as long as you want. Enjoy the red velvet, but I have to go.

Theo: I am so sorry about abigail. I mean, it’s just horrible, not only that she died but how she died.

Julie: It was shattering. That beautiful, young mother. I adored her.

Theo: If you wanna go be with your family, I’ll be fine. The kids are asleep.

Julie: No, darling. I would prefer to stay here and be useful, take my mind off things.

[Cell phone chimes]

Theo: Actually, would you mind if I stepped out for a little while? There’s somewhere I need to be.

Lani: I should have arrested tr. Instead, I went for my gun and I shot to kill, which not only makes me a murderer but a hypocrite. Do you know how many times I condemned trigger-happy cops for making us all look bad?

Eli: Baby, this is different. Tr hurt your family. Baby, he was about to do it again.

Lani: If I am serious about holding cops to a higher standard, making them accountable, then I need to do the same for myself.

Eli: Baby, you are a great cop. Look at me. Lani, look at me. You’re an even better mother, wife, daughter. We love you. We need you.

Lani: I don’t– I don’t want to be separated from you or the kids. But like I said, I…

[Sighs] I want jules and carver to be able to say that their mother did the right thing.

Eli: And you’re sure this is the right thing?

Lani: Yeah. That doesn’t mean that I’m not terrified. And the thought of being…

[Sniffles] I love you so much.

Roman: Kate, do you want to tell me what the hell that was all about?

Kate: What do you mean? Everything’s so gloom and doom these days. I just decided to try and be a matchmaker.

Roman: Okay, but why push my son to be with a woman you don’t even like?

Kate: Because it’s obvious he’s still in love with her.

Roman: How is it obvious?

Kate: Come on. It’s obvious to you. It’s obvious to me. And if nicole wasn’t trying to pretend, it would be damn well obvious to her too.

Eric: Nicole, I promise I did not put kate up to whatever that was she was doing, aside from being awkward and embarrassing.

Nicole: Okay, look, of course you didn’T. I know you well enough that you’d never stoop to that.

Eric: No. No, I wouldn’T. I mean, I would’ve never asked you to stay if I did.

Nicole: Well, I’m glad you did, you know, ’cause the chowder was amazing as usual.

[Laughter]

Eric: Good. Hey, and thank you for helping us earlier.

Nicole: Any time. So I’ll, um– I’ll talk to you soon.

Eric: Soon. And I’ll look out for the wedding invite. Bye.

Allie: You might be losing your touch.

Johnny: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Allie: Oh, come on, getting yourself hired as the videographer for the wedding and then inviting yourself over here.

Johnny: I was just helping you with the cake.

Allie: Yeah, and then you “helpfully” inserted some romantic memories of your beautiful, italian, fairytale wedding.

Johnny: So what, I’m not allowed to talk about our past?

Allie: What if I was constantly bringing up my past with chanel whom I’ve known a lot longer?

Johnny: It’s not about quantity.

Allie: All right, well, your quality isn’t so great either. She can see right through you.

Johnny: [Chuckles] You think she can’t see through you? “Oh, I wanna work in sweet bits again.” “Oh, let me bake your mom’s wedding cake.” I mean, come on, and the way– and the way you looked at her after she caught that bouquet.

Allie: Oh, that reminds me. I have to put this in the water.

Johnny: Mm-hmm. You know, I’m surprised you didn’t knock somebody over trying to catch that for yourself.

Allie: Why bother when chanel was motivated enough for the both of us? I mean, you notice how she talks about keeping her distance and taking things slow, but she did not hesitate to line up with the single ladies.

Johnny: You think that was all about her catching it so that she could marry you one day?

Allie: She’s a very superstitious person, okay? She doesn’t take that stuff lightly.

Johnny: Look, if chanel wants to marry anybody, it’s me. Again.

Allie: You tell yourself whatever you need to, johnny, but I’m gonna be cool and mature and not turn this into some juvenile competition. Okay? Whatever happens happens.

Johnny: I agree. And may the best twin win.

[Tense music]

Julie: [Sighs]

Lani: Are you gonna– are you gonna take it?

Eli: Rafe gave me the okay to escort you to booking myself.

Paulina: We are where we all want to be. And big mama reminded me of what family does when the going gets tough– we cover you in love and in prayer, baby.

Abe: We all love you.

Lani: I’m so sorry.

Kate: Hey, are those for the hortons?

Roman: They are–couple quarts of chowder and two sandwiches.

Kate: I feel so badly for them, and for chad and thomas and charlotte. There’s just been so much suffering this year.

Roman: You are right about that, which means that we really need some happy news.

Paulina: Did I hear someone say in they’re in the market for some happy news?

Kate: [Laughs] Well, you’re pretty chipper for someone who just got bailed out.

Paulina: Well, why shouldn’t I be? Today is juneteenth, and i can’t think of a better way to celebrate freedom than by marrying the man I love.

Kate: [Laughs] Well, I guess that depends on how you feel about marriage.

Roman: Wait a minute. You and abe are getting married for real?

Paulina: For real, for real this time. We are finally jumping that broom today, and we want you both to be there.

Abe: Mm, all right, check on the cake, get my clothes from the cleaners…

[Laughs] Oh, yes. They got the rings.

Allie: Well, this is perfect timing. I just finished one juneteenth wedding cake– rush order.

Abe: Aw, you are a angel, a angel, allie. Oh, thank you so much. Thank you for doing this on such short notice.

Allie: No problem. It’s not like I was up until 4 A.M. Finishing it. Okay, I was up until 4 A.M. Finishing it.

Abe: Aw, well–[Chuckles] Oh, and chanel helped, I hope.

Allie: Actually, no, but only because she was so busy helping her mom with last-minute wedding prep.

Abe: Yeah, of course, of course. Well, I can’t thank you enough, allie.

Allie: Yeah, of course. It was my pleasure, and I really loved researching all the juneteenth traditions. Um, it’s red velvet with butter cream frosting, just like the kind chanel’s big mama used to make when she was little.

Abe: Yes. I mean, you probably learned from all your research that red foods traditionally have special meaning for descendants of african slaves.

Allie: Yes, I did learn that.

[Both laugh]

Abe: So what is in the box?

Allie: Um, tea cakes. Um, another juneteenth staple, right?

Abe: Yes. My mother used to make tea cakes for me and my siblings, and they were–they were a delight.

Allie: Well, I’m just hoping that paulina and all of your guests like them.

Abe: Well, come and find out for yourself.

Allie: Oh, no, we’re having cake movers deliver everything to the wedding.

Abe: No, I mean as a guest. We would love to have you there.

Allie: Oh, I thought it was family-only.

Abe: And you are family, allie, and I know chanel would love to have you there.

Allie: Well, in that case, I’m in.

[Both laugh]

Johnny: Well, I’m glad you and aunt belle are keeping the kids busy. How’s uh–how’s uncle chad holding up? Yeah. Well, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.

[Chuckles] No, I haven’t heard from chanel.

[Door clicks open] Dad, I told you–

[Door clicks shut] Chanel asked me to– um, dad, let me call you back. Something just came up.

[Cell phone beeps] Hi.

Julie: Ms. Price, I heard so many wonderful things about you.

Olivia: Thank you. Please, call me olivia, or better yet, call me big mama. After all, we’re family.

Julie: [Sighs] Yes, we are family, and our family’s expanding this very day.

Olivia: Yes!

Julie: With the wedding of your daughter–the long-awaited and anticipated wedding to abraham.

Eli: I cannot believe it is finally happening.

Julie: Thank god it is. That’s what we all need– something hopeful to look forward to.

Lani: Damn.

[Sighs] Okay.

Olivia: Eli told me about your family’s loss. I’m so very sorry, julie.

Julie: Abigail was a wonderful woman, and…

[Sighs] She was taken far too soon.

Olivia: I’m praying for all of you.

Julie: Thank you. One thing her death has taught me is that no future is guaranteed. You just have to reach out and grab all the happiness that comes your way right now, in the present.

Paulina: Oh, we don’t want anything fancy, just some picnic food–hamburgers, hot dogs, all the fixin’S.

Roman: We can handle that.

Kate: Are you sure?

Roman: Yeah, kate, I can cater a picnic.

Kate: Yeah, oh that’s– I mean you. Are you sure about that? Do you really wanna have hot dogs at your wedding?

Paulina: Well, normally, I would not, of course. But, you know, since, you know, most of salem will already be cooking out for the town’s first annual juneteenth extravaganza, I decided, “go with the flow.”

Roman: Okay. Well then, not only am I honored to provide the food, but kate and I will be thrilled to attend.

Paulina: Oh, that will make abe so very happy.

Roman: Well, you two have been through so much to get here, you deserve a celebration.

Paulina: Amen to that. Speaking of which, you know, I still haven’t found someone to perform the ceremony.

Roman: What about marlena?

Paulina: [Grunts] Yeah, I gave that some thought, but after what happened the last time she officiated, I don’t wanna take any chances.

Roman: Understandable.

Kate: Well, who are you gonna get to marry you at such a late date?

Johnny: Really? Wow, that’s amazing. Tell her I say congrats. Not that she wants to hear that from me.

Chanel: Nah, she’s okay with you these days. Ah, but anyway, I should get going. I still have a ton to do if we’re gonna pull this thing off. So…

Johnny: Oh, what’s, uh– what else is on your list?

Chanel: Oh, what isn’t on my list? I have decorations, music, and mama wants the whole wedding recorded, so I have to find a videographer before I go over to help her get dressed.

Johnny: Uh, hello?

Chanel: Hello.

Johnny: No, no, I mean, what–what about me?

Abe: I understand. I did speak to jack and jennifer, by the way. We were wondering if– if this would be a good time to have the wedding. But they gave us their blessing, and they thought it would be– it would be a tribute to abigail’s memory.

Eli: Big mama, what were you telling us on the way over here about how you and your family used to celebrate juneteenth back in texas?

Julie: Oh, I’d like to know more about that. I’m afraid that’s a holiday that I’m not as familiar with as I would like to be. Uh, for starters, why is it called “juneteenth?”

Olivia: Well, honey, in june 19, 1865, a union general gave the order to free the slaves in texas.

Eli: Yeah, almost two and a half years after abraham lincoln had issued the emancipation proclamation.

Olivia: Texas slaves were in bondage that whole time, and that’s why for us, juneteenth is as important as the fourth of july.

Eli: It started in texas, but eventually, the descendants of slaves started celebrating everywhere.

Olivia: And my mama made sure to carry on the tradition when we left texas for miami.

Julie: What are some of the traditions?

Olivia: Well, there’s rodeos, cookouts, church services, and honey, let me tell you, the food…

Julie: Sounds like I’ve been missing out.

Olivia: Oh, you have.

Lani: I mean, she’s– she’s getting married today.

Theo: But she’s still facing murder charges.

Lani: Paulina–she did what she did to protect me and dad, and she is confident that justin is gonna get her off.

Tr: But you aren’t, are you? Because you know the truth. Why not tell your fake brother?

Lani: Listen, do you mind hanging here and watching the twins until the babysitter comes? I need to head over to paulina’s and help her get ready.

Theo: Uh, well, my dad’s getting married, so no complaints. Oh, um, the babysitter just got here. She’s giving the kids a bath.

Eli: Oh, good. Where’s lani?

Theo: She went over to paulina’s to help her get ready.

Eli: Oh, yeah, that’s right.

Eli: What do you mean?

Theo: Well, when I first got here, she was acting really weird.

Eli: Weird, how?

Theo: Like, scared? She said that she’s been hassled by some nosy neighbors, but I don’t know. It felt bigger than that.

Eli: Well, yeah, you know how your sister is. She’s always got the weight of the world on her shoulders. I’m sure she’ll be back to herself soon.

Theo: I hope so.

Eli: Look, I’m gonna go say bye to the twins, and then we’ll be off to get your pops married.

Eric: Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of abraham carver and paulina price. It’s been brought to my attention that this day was not chosen randomly, for today is not just any day. Today is june 19, 2022. On this day, back in 1865, in galveston, texas, the last of the confederacy’s slaves were proclaimed free. On this meaningful day, abe and paulina tell me that they wanna share a message of faith and freedom and abiding love. I understand that you two wrote your own vows. Abe, would you like to start?

Abe: Yes, I’d love to. Paulina, from the moment you sashayed into my life, I knew nothing was ever going to be the same again, but our road was not an easy one, was it? There was always love, the sacrificial love of a mother for her daughter, the daughter’s love for a family that she had come to know, and there was– there was our love, paulina, a love that simply could not be denied… and we know that because a good friend gave me a swift kick in the behind when–when I almost let it slip away.

[Laughter]

Abe: Paulina price, by the time I met you, I had–I had thought that I had experienced the last great love of my life. But every day, every day you prove that love is not in my past. Paulina: Yes, you were. You were a complication that I didn’t need or didn’t even see coming. I came to salem to sneak some time with my–my niece and her babies. I was so desperate to keep my true relationship to lani a secret, and I would have. I would have if I hadn’t fallen in love with you. But fall, I did. And before I knew it, all my secrets were laid bare, and that’s what I want us to be–honest, raw, real, and in love. From this day on, and for all the days of our lives.

Eric: If there is anyone who has just cause that these two should not wed, speak now or forever hold your peace.

[Suspenseful music]

All mama did was stop her abuser from hurting more people. He–he tried to kill my brother- in-law eli, and if you can’t find a way to free my mother, then I am going to find her a better lawyer. She’s a great person, and she doesn’t deserve this.

[Cell phone beeps]

Paulina: I guess you told him.

Chanel: [Sighs] Am I dreaming?

Paulina: [Laughs] No, baby, you’re not! I’m home!

[Door beeps]

Xander: Picked up your new prescription.

Sarah: Oh, thank you so much.

Xander: I wish you told me you were still having these hallucinations.

Paulina: I don’t know. All I know is ray was an evil man, and I am not sorry that we will never see him again.

Sarah: After everything that that woman put me through, it was very satisfying to see her behind bars where she’ll never hurt anyone again.

Gwen: So you came here to accuse me of murder?

Ava: Well, it’s not that far-fetched. Your resentment of your sister has been the driving force for most of your adult life.

Gwen: Okay, I had motive, yes. But you are forgetting means and opportunity.

Ava: Yeah, I’m not so sure about the means, but you certainly had opportunity.

Gwen: Really? Even though I was locked up here last night when the murder happened?

Ava: [Laughs] Gwen, you and i both know that is not true.

Julie: Oh, they’re resting. Before they went upstairs, I heard jack saying he’s been to see gwen in prison.

Abe: Yes, well, she is his daughter, and I’m sure she’s upset about abigail.

Julie: Upset? Upset? Abraham, remember what she did to abigail, what she did to– to sarah too? She’s a despicable person. I wish– I really wish she would just disappear out of our lives forever.

Sarah: I have to admit I really enjoyed telling gwen that you and I are back together.

Xander: Oh, thank god we are. Mmm. You know, darling, you and i have a lot of lost time to catch up on.

Sarah: [Giggles] Well, technically speaking.

Xander: What do you mean?

Sarah: It’s kind of hard to imagine you passing up sex.

Xander: [Sighs] Well, I would never pass up the opportunity to have it with you.

Ava: Uh, yeah, because this is gonna draw a lot of attention.

Gwen: Look, I’m not asking you to bust me out for good. I don’t want to be a fugitive for the rest of my life. I made that decision when I took the plea deal.

Ava: Okay, so you just wanna get out temporarily?

Gwen: Yes, that’s right. I have every intention of serving the rest of my sentence.

Ava: Okay, so how long we talkin’ about?

Gwen: Just a few hours.

Ava: A few hours to do what?

Gwen: What does it matter? Surely you must know some guard on the take–some desperate, stupid loser who’s gonna walk away and leave a gate unlocked or something. I promise I will be back before bed check.

Ava: And like a fool, I agreed without asking any questions. I figured, oh, maybe you wanted a few hours out in the real world to–I don’t know– take a shower? Have a nice meal? I didn’t really think about it. But now, it’s pretty obvious that you were planning to commit murder.

[Cell phone rings]

Abe: Oh, it’s chanel.

Julie: Go ahead and take it. It might be about paulina.

[Phone beeps]

Abe: Hello, chanel?

Chanel: Abe, mama’s home.

Abe: Oh, I know. That’s wonderful. How’s she doing?

Chanel: Great. But she’ll be even better if you came over. Are you sure she just doesn’t wanna rest?

Chanel: When has mama ever rested?

Abe: Excellent point.

Chanel: Anyway, I am fixing a very special dinner and I hope you can come. No, no, no, scratch that. You are coming. You don’t have a choice.

Abe: Oh, yes, ma’am.

[Chuckles] Have you talked to lani and eli?

Chanel: Oh, they’re next on my list. Oh, lani is going to be so excited to see our mom.

Lani: I can’t let paulina suffer for something that I did.

Eli: You’re doing the right thing for us–for our family. Once you make peace with that, tr will stop haunting you.

Lani: I can never make peace with this, eli. Not when I am letting my own mother rot in a jail cell for something that I did.

Eli: She’s not in jail, not anymore.

Lani: What?

Eli: I just left the courthouse.

Lani: Wait, she–

Eli: She made bail.

Lani: She’s free?

Eli: Yes, she’s free.

Lani: For how long? I mean, she confessed.

Eli: Yes, she confessed, but a judge granting her bail, that’s a good sign. The jury is bound to show sympathy, and once justin tells them how much that tr abused and traumatized her, they’ll see it wasn’t premeditated murder.

Lani: But it was still murder.

Eli: She might not have to do any jail time at all.

Lani: You can’t guarantee that. The only one who can guarantee that is me if I confess. Lemons.

Eli: Lani, we’ve been through this before. You cannot confess to shooting tr.

Lani: Well, I can’t let paulina go to prison for me.

Eli: Even if she was to confess, she’d still be in trouble for false confession, and then you could lose everything. Your job, your freedom, our kids– you know paulina doesn’t want that.

[Cell phone rings] Hey, chanel. Hello, brother-in-law. What are you and your lovely wife and your beautiful kids doing tonight?

Eli: Uh, tonight? Why do you ask?

Chanel: Well, I am planning a very special dinner for mama, and I hoped you guys could come over.

Eli: Dinner?

Chanel: A celebration for her making bail, and I know she would love to see you guys.

Eli: I’m not sure that dinner tonight is a good idea.

Xander: [Sighs] Well, I mean, abigail was stupid enough to leave the drug lying around.

Xander: [Scoffs] Can’t say something negative about saint abigail?

Eric: Why not try being a decent human being?

Xander: I’m only trying to be honest. I mean… sarah’s condition is due in no small part to abigail’s carelessness. I just hope she’s more careful next time.

Nicole: Next time?

Xander: [Sighs] What is it?

Eric: Obviously, you don’t know. You haven’t heard the news.

Sarah: What news?

Eric: Abigail… she was murdered.

[Dramatic music]

Gwen: Whatever it is that you think you know–

Ava: Okay, don’t play coy with me, gwen. You obviously left here. You went to the dimera mansion. You snuck up into abigail’s bedroom without ever being seen, and then you stabbed her to death–

Gwen: Now you wait a minute–

Ava: And then you slipped back in here as if you never left. And suddenly, I am an accessory to murder. I have moderate to severe ulcerative colitis.

Gwen: Right, let’s say your theory is correct.

Ava: Oh, let’s say. Hmm.

Gwen: Well, then I suppose you would be an accessory to murder if you had busted me out of prison and if I had gone to abigail’s and stabbed her to death.

Ava: So is this a confession?

Gwen: No. I said “if” I did that.

Ava: So are you denying it?

Gwen: I’m saying you’re getting worked up over nothing.

Ava: Your sister was killed, and everyone knows she ruined your life.

Gwen: Ava, look at my face. Do I look worried to you?

Ava: Actually, you look rather calm.

Gwen: Yes, exactly. I’m not worried. So why should you be?

Eric: I’m sorry you had to find out this way.

Xander: I had no idea the poor woman just lost her life. Abigail is the person who– was the person who brought sarah back to me. I’ll be forever grateful for that.

Sarah: That’s true. Yeah, if it weren’t for abigail, I might not have made it home. She’s the only person that didn’t give up looking for me. And I didn’t get a chance to– to thank her properly or to say goodbye. God, this is so…

Eric: It’s been hard for everyone.

Eli: I told chanel that you weren’t feeling well, and that is not a lie. You’re in no shape to be there tonight.

Lani: Oh, is that why you don’t want me to go, or is it just because that you’re afraid that I’m gonna have a breakdown and just tell everybody the truth?

[Both laugh]

Abe: I cannot tell you how happy I am to see you.

Eric: Nicole, when you were planning on getting married this week–I’m assuming I wasn’t on the guest list.

Sarah: She was obsessively jealous of her sister. She did all kinds of horrible things to ruin abigail’s life. Not to mention what she did to me, and isn’t she responsible for laura’s death?

Xander: Ah, that was an accident.

Sarah: Xander.

Xander: I’m not defending gwen, sarah. I’m not. But she’s in prison, locked up. I mean, she couldn’t possibly have anything to do with abigail’s death.

Sarah: [Sighs] I guess you’re right.

Ava: I’m usually pretty good at reading people. But I can’t decide whether you’re telling the truth or not.

Gwen: Why would I lie?

Ava: Why indeed. But I certainly don’t want this on my conscience.

Gwen: You once told me that guilt is a waste of time.

Ava: Okay, so maybe it’s not my conscience that I’m worried about. But rafe is looking for any excuse to lock me up, and I sure as hell am not gonna give him one. So the next time you think about calling me for a favor, don’T.

Kate: I wish that I could give you the answers that you need, but I can’T. I can’T. I just wish I could. I have no idea why anyone would do this to abigail, but I do know that my heart is broken for you and for your children.

Chad: I’m just grasp–I’m grasping at straws right now, so I’m not thinking straight. I’m so–I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to lash out at you.

Kate: Don’t apologize, okay? Don’t do that. I’m sorry–I’m sorry that I can’t be of more comfort to you.

Chad: Nobody–nobody can be. And nothing…

Kate: I know, I know. Maybe you should get some rest.

Chad: I can’t rest. I can’t rest. Every time I close my eyes, I just–I see her laying there. Covered in blood. I just keep remembering the last thing that she said to me.

Kate: She talked to you? Did she give you any clue of what happened?

Chad: She just said that they had a knife.

Kate: I see.

Chad: I keep racking my brain trying to think about who would do this to my wife. What kind of sick and sadistic person would do something like this? And the only person I can think of is gwen. But she’s in prison, obviously, so she couldn’t have done it.

Jack: The police don’t have any suspects at the moment.

Gwen: Is that why you came here, to ask me if I had something to do with it?

Jack: Of course not. My god, why would you even think that?

Gwen: I mean, it crossed my mind, that’s all, especially because of everything that happened between abigail and I in the past. I just really wish that the last time that I saw her hadn’t ended the way that it did.

Jack: When was the last time that you saw her?

Gwen: Yesterday. She came to visit me.

Jack: She did? Why?

Gwen: I guess you could say that our last encounter sealed both of our fates forever. Are you one of the millions of americans

Ava: So you’re gonna spend the summer with joey and stephanie?

Tripp: You know, it’ll be a little while before my ankle heals and I can get back to work, so I figured I might as well enjoy a little change of scenery until then.

Ava: But you’re coming back, right?

Tripp: Yes. At least I think so. I gotta clear my head, you know? Process everything that’s happened.

Ava: You’re talking about what happened with allie?

Tripp: That among other things, like almost dying, being possessed by the devil. I mean, you can understand why I might need to get away, can’t you?

Ava: Of course I can. What am I gonna do without you, hm?

Jack: I don’t understand. How did abigail’s visit here seal your fates?

Gwen: Well, I just meant that because of how things ended so badly between us, and now that she’s gone… I won’t ever have a chance to reconcile with her. Although, maybe that never would’ve happened anyway.

Jack: I would like to think that you would have eventually, that you both would’ve gotten past the anger and the resentment.

Gwen: Well, I guess now we’ll never know.

Gabi: You probably don’t know this, but abigail and i used to be best friends.

Li: I didn’t know that, no.

Gabi: She was my ride or die. Even after everything blew up, we had this connection. It’s like she could see the real me. She could see what I was hiding, see through my defenses. It was kind of annoying sometimes, but it was also very comforting.

Li: It’s a shame you two had a falling out.

Gabi: Yeah, yes, it is. And we spent a lot of time battling each other, tearing each other down, but every once in a while, we’d find some common ground, like we did with gwen rizczech.

Li: Hm, the infamous nanny?

Gabi: Yeah, abigail and I, we teamed up to bring her down. It didn’t go as planned, but it felt nice to be on the same side again. It’s funny, that was one of the few times that I had to stop abigail from making things worse. Usually, it was the other way around.

Li: It sounds like she was the yin to your yang, as my father would say, complete opposites who balanced each other out. You know, they say, “the shadow cannot exist without the light.”

Gabi: Yeah. Now that light is gone. What are we gonna do without her?

Kate: I know that you want justice for abigail. I do, but you have to let the police find out who did it, okay? You really need to focus on yourself and your children now.

[Soft music]

Chad: Ugh, I haven’t told them yet. I don’t know–i don’t know how I’m going to.

Kate: Charlotte and thomas, they’re strong, okay? And they’re resilient.

Chad: Just like their mom.

Kate: Where are they right now?

Chad: Ej and belle took them to marlena’s last night.

Kate: Okay, that’s good. You know it’s really–it’s a good thing that they have people who love them–so many people who love them and are gonna be there for them.

Chad: Yeah.

Kate: Is there anything that I can do right now for you, for the kids?

Chad: No, not at the moment.

Kate: Okay. You’ll let me know, right?

Chad: Yeah, I will. Thank you.

Kate: I love you.

Chad: Okay, I love you too.

Gabi: You probably think I’m the world’s biggest hypocrite. I’ve done so many awful things to abigail; I don’t have the right to cry over her like this.

Li: It’s like you said, she may have been your enemy, but she was also your friend. I honestly doubt abigail would begrudge you your tears.

Gabi: Thank you. This is more than you bargained for when you hooked up with me.

Li: Gabi, I thought I was clear. I’m all in. Through the good, the bad–

Jack: So why did abigail come to visit you?

Gwen: I asked her to. See, I’d made you a gift, and I wanted her to deliver it to you. Flying to boston to surprise you for your birthday.

Jack: I didn’t know that. Well, obviously, I can’t ask chad to go through her things, not right now. For your gift.

Gwen: No, don’t bother. You won’t find it.

Gwen: I dropped it. And it shattered to pieces.

Jack: That’s too bad. You couldn’t fix it?

Gwen: No. Much like my relationship with my sister, it was broken beyond repair.

Jake: I’m not sure if you remember, but back when I first found out that I was a dimera, abigail had just come home from florida, right? And I fixed her car.

Chad: I remember.

Jake: Anyway, she had this book in the back seat by some writer, something ishiguro.

Chad: Kazuo.

Jake: That’s the one. “Never let me go.” Abigail, she asked me if i wanted to borrow it, and I said, “I’m not much of a reader.” But she insisted. And I ended up liking it. Anyway, the thing is, abigail barely knew me when she insisted that I borrow that book. And I always saw that as her reaching out to me, you know, sharing a part of herself. And that meant a lot. She made a real effort to welcome me into this family.

Chad: Unlike me.

Jake: I didn’t say that.

Chad: You didn’t have to. I don’t know if i ever made this clear. I hate that I made assumptions about your friendship with abby. I was an idiot to fall for gwen’s lies and to betray abby in the worst way possible. I hurt her badly. And I thought I had… I thought I had lost her for good. But we worked things out. We were happy. We were planning to have another baby.

Jake: Hey.

[Soft music]

Tripp: Well, I should probably get going.

Ava: Oh.

Tripp: Dad’s taking me to a farewell lunch before I go to the airport.

Ava: All right. You two have a good time.

Tripp: I’ll admit, I do feel a little guilty leaving right now; I mean, the timing isn’t ideal.

Ava: Why is that?

Tripp: I guess you haven’t heard. My cousin abigail, she died last night.

Ava: What–what happened?

Tripp: Someone broke into her house and stabbed her. Her husband, chad, found her lying there, and he got her to the hospital, but it was too late. It’s such a terrible tragedy. I mean, she’s got two little kids. She was such a wonderful person. I still can’t believe it.

Ava: That’s just horrible for her family. Do they have any suspects?

Tripp: No, not yet.

Gwen: So you and jennifer had to go and view abigail’s body? I mean, that seems rather cruel to make you do that. Couldn’t they have had chad do the necessary identifications?

Jack: Nobody made us do it. We wanted to do it. I wanted to see her. I wanted to tell her so many things that I’d wanted to say before she… anyway, her mother and me, as hard as it is, it’s nothing compared to what’s happening with thomas and charlotte, our grandbabies. They’re gonna grow up without their mother.

[Sobbing]

Gwen: Dad. Dad, listen, abigail knew how much you loved her. She did, she knew. And she knew how lucky she was to have a father as wonderful and caring as you, as am I.

Jack: Thank you. Thank you for saying that.

Gwen: It’s the truth, it is. It’s the truth. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m so, so sorry.

Jennifer: Okay. That’s the best I can do.

Steve: Well, in that case, why don’t you let me take you home now?

Jennifer: Okay. That’d be great.

Kate: Jennifer.

Jennifer: Hello, kate.

Kate: I’m so sorry about abigail. She was a beautiful person. I respected her, her strength, and her love of family. I guess she got that from you.

Jennifer: Thank you.

Lucas: I hate to see jenn going through all of this.

Kate: And chad. I just left him.

Lucas: How’s he doing? Forget I asked. It’s a stupid question, okay?

Kate: I tell you, it’s so difficult. It was so difficult. He’s in so much pain. And, out of grief, he accused me of killing abigail.

Lucas: He what?

Kate: Yeah, yeah. To keep her quiet because she knew about you kidnapping sami.

Lucas: What are you talking about–that’s ridiculous. You would never do anything to hurt abigail.

Kate: Yeah, of course I wouldn’T. But, you know, I can’t help thinking, would you? So I said, “yeah you’re saving hundreds

Jack: I’d better get back to jennifer; she doesn’t know where I am. I didn’t tell her I was coming to see you.

Gwen: Please give her my condolences.

Jack: I will, thanks. Please take care of yourself, gwen.

Gwen: Dad, wait. Happy birthday.

[Soft music]

Gabi: What are you doing here?

Jake: I came to see chad.

Gabi: How is he?

Jake: How do you think? He just lost the love of his life.

Gabi: I know what that’s like. I’m talking about stefan, of course.

Jake: Of course. Look at you now. You’ve bounced back. Right into shin’s bed.

Gabi: Excuse me, how did…

Jake: So what, are you guys like a thing now?

Gabi: Why do you care? Especially since I hear you and ava are no longer “just roommates.”

Jake: Looks like we’ve both moved on, so I guess we have nothing else to talk about. See you at the office.

Lucas: So my mother–my mother, who’s supposed to have faith in me, you actually think that I killed abigail, really? Mother to two young children? Beautiful person that abigail was?

Kate: It crossed my mind, yes, but most importantly, it crossed chad’s mind.

Lucas: Oh, my god. You can’t be serious.

Kate: Okay, don’t worry. Don’t worry, I covered. I covered. I told him that you had no idea that abigail even knew, so you wouldn’t have a motive. But we both know that you could because you were very, very upset when i told you about abigail. And then you didn’t show up for dinner.

Lucas: I didn’t show up for dinner–

Kate: What did you do to your hand?

Lucas: I don’t know what i I did with my hand, all right?

Kate: What does that mean?

Lucas: After we talked last night, I fell off the wagon.

Kate: Oh, god, lucas.

Lucas: I blacked out. I have no memory of what I did last night.

Kate: Oh, god.

Tripp: Are you sure i shouldn’t stick around? I mean, given the circumstances, everyone being in shock about abigail, I can put off leaving.

Steve: No, no, come on. We’ll all be all right. I’m just sorry I couldn’t give you a bigger sendoff.

Tripp: Are you kidding me? This is perfect. I mean, it kind of reminds me of when we first started getting to know each other, bonding over fries with hot sauce.

Steve: Yeah. This is the way real men eat fries.

Tripp: And do real men drink beer this early in the day?

Steve: How else was I gonna give you a goodbye toast? Lift that bottle. To the best son a man could ever ask for. I’m gonna miss you, tripp. Promise me you’ll come back soon.

Tripp: I promise.

[Soft music]

Jack: I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I was going to see gwen. I just–I didn’t know how you’d take it.

Jennifer: Oh, it’s fine. I’m glad you did. I mean, she’s your daughter and abigail’s sister. No matter how I feel about her, she deserved to hear the news from you.

Jack: Actually, I didn’t tell her. By the time I got there, she had already heard.

Jennifer: How did she take it?

Jack: Well, obviously, there’s no love lost between her and abigail, but I could tell. Much as she tried to put up a good front, I could tell that abigail’s death shook her more than she was letting on.

Ava: Gwen. I’m glad I caught you.

Gwen: Ava.

Ava: I just heard about abigail. It’s horrible, oh, my god.

Gwen: So you came all this way to give me your condolences?

Ava: No. I came to ask you one thing. Did you do it?

Gabi: I’m so sorry, chad. This is such a terrible tragedy. I just–my heart goes out to you and your children.

Chad: Thank you.

Gabi: I know you’re skeptical about my feelings for abigail. Yeah, we had a lot of problems. I loved her. I loved her very much. And it’s just complicated.

Chad: Yeah, that’s one word for it.

Gabi: You know, over the last year, I’d like to think that we’d gotten to an okay place. I hope she thought so too. You know, whoever did this made a huge mistake because nobody but me gets to mess with abigail deveraux dimera, all right? So we’re gonna find the son of a bitch who did this, and we’re gonna make them pay.

Kate: How could you have done something so stupid after working so hard to get sober?

Lucas: Maybe the pressure of keeping my secret finally got to me, all right?

Kate: Oh, god, lucas. So what did you do? So you just start drinking when I left the pub?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, when you left, I stole a bottle from behind the bar, and i got totally wasted. I woke up with a massive hangover, and I have no memory of what I did after i left the pub.

Kate: You have no idea of where you went, what you did?

Lucas: I have no idea. I just woke up with this cut on my hand, which could have been from a knife.

Kate: Oh, my god. You don’t think that you–that you could have…

Lucas: Killed abigail? I wish I could say, “of course not.” But honestly, I’m not sure.
