Well, ’cause I forgot about them. I mean, I haven’t seen them in years.

Yeah, well, I didn’t know that the gnomes were moving in as well. Don’t you think they’d be a bit more comfortable in a garden?

Hmm. I’m beat. Where do we sit? Don’t tell me we have to unpack tonight just so we can have a place to sit down.

We weren’t sure if it was going to be able to at first. I mean, it was kind of touch-and-go there for a second. It was pretty busy over there at the hospital.

Five of us? Does that mean you’re flying solo tonight, sis?

[inhales deeply] Mm.

Gabi, you’re sure everything’s okay? Well, yeah, I panicked, because every time I see Statesville infirmary on my caller ID, I get worried that something’s happened to you.

[dramatic music] It’s–it’s, um… Yeah, everything’s fine. No worries on that front.

[scoffs] Gabi, I just told you, everything’s fine. I swear. Of course I would tell you.

[sighs] If you’re hearing something in my voice, it’s just that, uh… I miss you… terribly.

Why’d you text me from a unknown number?

Why’d you come out here if you didn’t know who it was? Ava, there’s a lot of shady activity going on around here, and I warned you to be careful.

Oh, you warned me? So this was a test?

[dramatic music]

I’d be willing to give it a shot, I guess. I mean, I would–

[chuckles]

I was really hoping you would say that.

[objects jingle] Uh, Sarah… welcome to your new home.

Did you have these in your pocket the whole time?

[laughter] You’re quiet

She is still out. So I thought maybe I could… heat up the leftover haggis… if we could get to the leftover haggis.

Yeah, I mean, as much as I love that you love one of my favorite Scottish dishes, I think it’s pizza or bust tonight.

And then we can unpack some of these boxes.

So that our living room isn’t an obstacle course.

[chuckles]

What’s going on with me… is I’m becoming a successful restaurant manager. It’s called The Bistro. Maybe you’ve heard of it. Hottest ticket in town.

Okay, well, just please– just please hold on. I know something’s wrong. I know you gave up the whole Mafia-princess thing years ago. And at first, I thought, what are they doing– sucking her back in? But that’s not it. Something’s gotten into you. I know it. I feel it.

I am just about to sit down to dinner with my family.

Well, how about as a thank-you for doing all the heavy lifting, I heat up the haggis tomorrow, complete with the neeps and tatties that you love. Actually, I found a recipe where you cook everything in a whisky sauce.

[groans] We should probably get it over with. But, um… before we do, Sarah…

I want us both to be comfortable here together in our shared home. And I was just wondering… don’t you think maybe we should consider, I don’t know, condensing a wee bit? Like, um–like, for instance, do we need, oh, I don’t know, a-a sewing machine? Do you even sew?

Well, that’s an antique passed through my mom’s family. And I just–I don’t know. I thought I’d take it up.

With all that free time that you have?

[chuckles] Yeah. It’s not that much, huh? No, you’re right. Okay, yeah. We should both downsize a bit.

[laughs] I never saw that when we were married.

Well, I kept in a closet underneath my Highland wool blanket.

Okay, well, we have to scale back somewhere.

Well, maybe your gnome friends would be a little bit more at home in a garden shed at your mother’s.

So wait. You get to keep the kilts, but I got to my gnomes?

Sarah, keep whatever you like. I just–I’m just trying to find a way to excavate the furniture.

Okay. How about I ask my mom to store stuff for both of us that isn’t imminently required?

And then we can move all of that stuff tomorrow to her house.

Hey, everybody. This is Everett Lynch, the editor in chief of “The Spectator.”

Everett, welcome. I’m Kayla, Stephanie’s mom.

So… I understand you knew my daughter back in Seattle.

What’s in this one? Oh, this is the card I gave you on our very first Valentine’s Day together.

It’s just–ah, nothing. I know what’s in it. So you don’t–you don’t need to–to look into it.

Yeah. I mean, it’s just, you know, like–like, just trinkets and mementos from when you were together.

You kept mementos of when we were together?

I thought I’d lost this! This is–this is the hat I wore on our first trip to the beach, you thief. Oh, my God. You found it.

You know, when we were together… and I saw who you really are… and what’s been happening lately, this is not–this is not you.

He was in line ordering his morning chocolate chip muffin.

Yeah. Yeah. Bit of a creature of habit. It’s very embarrassing.

I was ahead of him, and I got the last one, and he actually offered me bucks to buy it.

Well, I started at , but you looked at me like I was crazy, so…

Ah, I can’t imagine.

So did you take the bucks?

No. She very generously offered to split the muffin in half.

[chuckles]

I’m not heartless.

Yeah, and I knew sort of then and there that she, was, um… she was special. Not just because of the way she–she split the muffin, but maybe just the smile on her face while she did it.

Ahh.

[chuckles] Maybe it was just everything about her. Anyway, uh, we got to talking, and it turned out that she was doing PR for a nonprofit that I was covering.

Oh.

And the rest is history.

Hmm.

Well, you know what they say. One man’s history is another man’s mystery.

[chuckles]

Oh, I just mean, you know, um, your mom and I were surprised to hear that your Seattle ex-boyfriend was in town, when we didn’t even know you had a boyfriend in Seattle.

Well, excuse me for wanting to see where a relationship goes before telling my parents.

Okay. Fair enough. So, Everett, did you move to Salem to be with Stephanie?

[scoffs]

I mean, are you two back together again or what?

Oh, my God.

[clears throat]

Well, my mom did at the house– just recently, actually.

I looked everywhere for this right before our wedding.

I remember. It’s a part of an ancient Scottish tradition.

Yeah. It’s a Quaich whisky cup. It’s, uh… it’s known as the loving cup, because– Well, see the two handles?

Mm-hmm.

One for the bride, one for the groom.

[chuckles]

And the newlyweds drink their first drink together as a married couple.

[chuckles]

It symbolizes love and trust. I was hoping that we could drink from it at our wedding.

I’m really sorry that you couldn’t find it. It’s used for Burns Night, too, right?

You know about Burns Night?

I did some research. It’s a celebration of Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet.

The great Scottish poet.

[laughs] And it’s celebrated on his birthday, which is next week.

[chuckles] I’m so impressed.

[laughs]

Oh… our wedding photo. Hmm.

Well, um, it’s–it’s safe to say that this box can go back into storage, ’cause we won’t be needing any of that.

You’re not interrupting anything.

Good, ’cause it’s cold out here. I need to get you inside. And we have a hell of a mess to clean up, thanks to the detective.

Scavenger hunt. We were just talking about something like this a couple days ago.

It’s this amazing geocache-based game that I did in Hong Kong, and I was thinking maybe we’d want to try something like it here.

Geocache?

Yeah. So you hide things in containers all over the city, and then you post clues where to find them.

Right. And when you do, you take what’s hidden, and you replace it with a new treasure. Is that right?

Yeah. It’s a points game. And so every time you find a new item, you get some points.

Hmm.

What’s the purpose of it?

To have fun, Dad.

[chuckles]

And it’s an adventure. It gets you outdoors.

What if we did it for charity? We could get “The Spectator” to sponsor it.

Yeah, how about if the hospital benefits from this?

Ooh, I like that idea.

And I could handle the tech.

Mm-hmm.

And Steve could place all the items, because you know the city’s ins and outs better than anybody around.

You know what? I will call Mayor Price first thing in the morning. I’m sure she’s going to be wiped out from her MLK activities, but I know she’ll love it. We just need to set a date.

Well, since February is American Heart Month, what better day than Valentine’s Day?

Our anniversary.

Oh. I would love to have a treasure hunt on our special day with you, baby.

[chuckles]

So what kind of goodies are we going to hide?

[upbeat music]

Yeah. I’m sure. But Holly Jonas, though– I wish there was more we could do for her. She’s still non-responsive to sound, light, or touch.

I just want to tell you I’m so happy you’re staying in Salem. Tripp is over the moon about it.

[chuckles] Well, I’m pretty over the moon myself– to be with him, I mean.

Well, you’re obviously a very special person, and Kayla and I are so happy that Tripp has found someone he loves… and who loves him, too.

Well, I, uh–I should probably get going, too.

Oh, come on, you’re a night owl. You only need, what, five or six hours of sleep?

Well, that’s sort of by necessity, not by desire.

[chuckles] Yeah, I seem to recall you having issues with insomnia.

Turns out, coma–surefire cure to a sleep disorder.

So you’re really into that, uh, scavenger idea?

Oh, yeah, I love it. I think it’ll be an awesome fundraiser.

Well, maybe we should team up and treasure hunt.

Hmm. Well, if we know where everything’s hidden, that would be cheating.

Unless… I tell my dad not to tell us where the treasures are. Then you and I can turn this town upside down.

You knew Holly got drunk on Christmas Eve?

Yes. When we came home Christmas morning, I went upstairs to check on her, and she felt awful. She had a headache, and she was nauseous, and she told me everything. How did you find out?

Johnny told me. He said that she drunk-dialed him and left a rather long, rather incoherent message. He was worried, obviously, and so he rushed back home to check on her.

And why didn’t you tell me that?

Well, I didn’t want to upset you. You were already at wits’ end. Why didn’t you tell me at Christmas?

[chuckles] Because Holly was embarrassed, and she didn’t want anyone to know.

But it was fine to tell Eric?

I didn’t tell Eric. Honey, Holly and I ran into him when we went on our walk Christmas morning. And she tried to hide the fact that she was hungover, but Eric, being a recovering alcoholic, could see right through it. So…he was just very kind to her, and he was not judgmental at all.

[sighs] I– I wasn’t sure that I was even going to bring this up, but you’re gonna find out sooner or later.

Rafe contacted me earlier and said that he has been questioning Holly’s high school friends. And they admitted that they have been dabbling in weed, and so has she.

But that would explain why– why he said it at first and then he backed off, right? I mean, I hate– I hate to think it myself, but I–

We weren’t there with him at school either, were we, causing trouble? I mean, maybe we shouldn’t have sent him to boarding school in the first place.

I know. I thought about that too. Maybe we shouldn’t have. I mean–I mean, he spent a lot of time away from us lately, especially me. I haven’t been ar– I mean, I called him. I visited. I had him here for summer on vacation. I thought I was close to him, I thought I knew who he was, and now I’m sitting here thinking, hey, Dad, maybe you didn’t know your son as well as you thought you did.

So… Holly’s friends told Rafe that she smoked weed.

They did.

[sighs] I know I– I shouldn’t be shocked, but… I am.

As am I. Her night of drinking also caught me by surprise as well, but I just chalked it up to a one-time thing.

Yeah, me too. Well, I mean… at least weed is legal here.

Not if you’re not yet .

[sighs] Well, now I can’t help but wonder– I mean, what if– I mean, would Holly go beyond that? Would she– would she take something more hard-core?

[groans]

What are you thinking?

You know… that morning she was hungover, I saw her take pills that I thought could have been aspirin, but maybe not.

Nicole, Nicole, look at me. Let’s not jump to any dire conclusions, OK? Holly was hungover. The logical explanation is, she had a headache. She took aspirin for it.

[sighs]

And experimenting occasionally with marijuana does not make her an addict, OK?

OK, OK. You know, but we also don’t know if Tate’s really using drugs. He’s a good kid.

Why would you think that? Like, the only reason he is now living in Salem is because he was expelled from boarding school. How does that qualify him as a good kid?

Well, OK, but how did he get expelled, all right? Was it because of some dumb prank that went sideways? Kids do stupid things. I’m stating the obvious. And that just might include Holly. It’s just that– that doing drugs is just a lot worse than being stupid, isn’t it, because it’s illegal, and it’s dangerous.

[sighs] And I– I can’t believe I’m gonna say this… but maybe Holly isn’t as honest and innocent as I thought she was.

[respirator whirring, monitor beeping]

You know, you’ve grown up so much. Feels like yesterday you were just a little girl. My little girl. I remember… the first time you called me Daddy. Holly, I just want to tell you how sorry I am. You know, when I left you and your mom to go to Africa, I just thought it was the right thing to do. But now I know that there is– there was nothing more important in this world than you are to me and being your dad.

[smooches]

Now I get a deal? What kind of deal?

Well, you may be or may not be aware of the drug problem in Salem. But a dealer was caught who was back in the game for less than hours after he was released from Statesville. And I questioned him. And I believe that whoever’s behind this drug epidemic is right here inside this prison. So I spoke to Mayor Price, and she gave me the green light to take action. That’s where you come in. I need your help getting intel on the inside.

You got to be out of your damn mind.

[sighs]

You ever hear the saying “snitches get stitches”? You’ve heard of that, right? Well, here it’s different. You don’t get stitches. You get broken bones. You get your skull stepped on. That’s what happens. When I was in the yard the other day, I saw somebody get shanked. They got shanked just for reporting contraband, for a freaking cell phone. They carried the guy out in a body bag.

I know it’s a lot to ask.

Yeah, no kidding.

Yeah, but I also know that you were an undercover prison informant before, Lucas, right, years ago? And that last year, you really helped John Black, Steve Johnson, Roman Brady with a certain Orpheus situation.

I thought that Orpheus killed my mother. And you don’t even know how many times I almost got popped and how many times I almost lost my life. I can’t, all right? You’re gonna have to fight the good fight against drugs on your own, OK? I am not your guy. My informant days are over.

OK, I get it. I understand your reservations. I do. But maybe you’ll change your mind if I tell you how I can help you.

You know, we haven’t had a whole lot of interaction, really. I barely know him. I don’t even know if I’ll get the chance to now, given he’s in so much trouble.

She is a wreck. I’ve been trying to help her out as best I can. I’m trying to navigate the situation with her, but instead I totally blew it with her.

Brady, I totally understand what you’re feeling. I feel it too. Did I miss a sign or something? Could I have prevented this somehow, or…

[sighs] Is it just that Tate takes after me?

OK, hey, Theresa, don’t. No.

[sighs] No, I’m serious. I mean, I’m starting to feel like I’m responsible. Maybe I’m the one who failed our son.

[breathing heavily]

I just said I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Yeah, neither do I. But, EJ, Rafe said that Holly’s friends admitted to smoking pot, which is considered fairly benign these days, right? But if they were taking a more powerful drug, do you really think they would tell the cops? Do you really think Holly would tell us? No, no way.

No, no, I suppose not.

[sighs] Now I’m realizing that it’s possible that I’ve deluded myself about Holly for a while now. You know, I thought that she was well-balanced and responsible and that if she was struggling or she had an issue that she would talk to me and I could get her the help she needed.

[sighs] EJ, I just–I never thought that she would resort to drugs. Oh, God, we got to get going. We have to get back to the hospital. I’ll meet you in the car.

[sighs] Dear God, could Tate have been telling the truth?

You know everything that went down with Tate and Holly, right?

Oh, yeah. It’s “The Spectator’s” biggest story right now. If that was Thomas and Charlotte, I’d be losing my mind.

Yeah, well, Theresa, she sure the hell is. And I’m trying to be supportive, but I guess I crossed a boundary of hers or whatever. She kicked me out of the room…

Told me she wanted to be alone with Brady so they could discuss their son.

Well, that must have been tough for you.

Yeah, but I mean, I get it, you know? Brady’s Tate’s dad. I understand that. I’m just trying to figure out what the hell my role is in all this. I’m the boyfriend of the woman with the teenager going through a terrible time. It’s new territory for me. I’m a little lost. I keep screwing things up.

Justin, I mean. I know he’s not your biological father, but he raised teenage boys.

Yeah, unfortunately, him and I aren’t on the best of terms at the moment either– also my fault.

[sighs] I guess it’s just because my whole life has been turned upside down. This whole Victor thing, him being my real dad… did a number on my head. I keep lashing out at Justin for no good reason. I don’t know, man, maybe it’s just in my blood to ruin all my relationships.

Theresa, look. Hey, hey, stop. It’s not your fault. Anything that happened with Tate and Holly that night is not your fault. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s probably mine. I’m the one that hasn’t been there– enough anyway, obviously.

They were very encouraging when I spoke to them about Holly’s condition. And although they couldn’t promise– they couldn’t promise anything, I really do think it could help her. It’s an extraordinary facility, world-renowned.

OK, I appreciate the call, I do, but the doctors– the doctors have been great. They’ve done so much for her. And is–is taking her to Italy really the answer? What if something happens to her while she’s traveling?

We’ll take every precaution. I’ll hire an expert physician who will accompany us for the entire trip. They will never leave her side. You just say the word, and I’ll make the arrangements.

Well, if it was good news, then they would have told her over the phone, right?

No, no, not necessarily. I mean, that could just be the way they do things, you know?

[sighs] It’s just that this whole testing thing has been dragged on for so long. And Mama’s being all stoic and brave. And me, I’m just, you know, pumping her up, telling her everything’s gonna be OK. But it’s all an act because I don’t want her to know how scared I really am.

OK, but you just promise you won’t tell anyone, OK?

I need everyone to think that I am stoic and brave like Mama.

No, but if things go the way we hope, in a few days, she will be getting treatment at a world-renowned hospital in Italy.

Well, Eric didn’t mention that to me.

No, that’s–what I meant was that I’m glad Holly’s receiving treatment, because Eric and I have been praying every day for her recovery.

Well, I mean, I wasn’t in the past, but… pregnancy, the miscarriage, and now… having our prayers answered with this beautiful baby boy, all that changed me. It made me more religious.

Right. Well, I can see how it would. So I take it Jude is with Eric?

Yeah, he is. I’m just out picking up a few things. We’re having Eric’s mom and stepfather over for dinner tonight, which we have been trying to do for a while. But I’ve kind of been putting it off.

Yeah, it’s more than that. Truth is, I’m a little intimidated by his mother. She’s just– she’s so perfect, you know?

I get it. Marlena was my mother-in-law too. But may I suggest that you pour yourself a large glass of wine before they get there, because if you start the night out wired, it’s only gonna go downhill from there.

You know, you don’t have to do this today if you’re not feeling up to it. You can have the deputy mayor step in.

Today of all days, I am doing this. Mm-mm, my mother marched with Dr. King as a young woman, and I wouldn’t be here today without her…

You know, some people might say that Dr. King would want me to shrug off what happened to me today and just push forward. But I don’t think that’s what he meant at all. I think that when you see injustice that you need to do something.

Man, I feel for Jada. Getting profiled as a shoplifter, that kind of stuff really shakes you up.

Anything like that ever happen to you?

Are you kidding? Just the other day, I was walking in the square, and this lady, she was sitting on a bench by herself, and she had her purse next to her. She sees me walking, and she takes her purse and she puts it on her lap.

You’re not really shocked.

I mean, yeah, I kind of am. I feel like I’ve spent a lot of time with you, and I’ve just never seen it.

Yeah, that’s because you weren’t looking. But it happened everywhere– here, in London, in Italy.

Italy?

Yeah. You remember how people were looking at us because we were an interracial couple? When Mama was a kid, it would have been illegal for us to get married in many places in this country.

[sighs] Well… I’m sure as hell glad that we’re not back there.

Yeah. We’ve come a long way. But we can’t pretend like we don’t still have a long way to go.

A big glass of wine, check. Actually, I bought two bottles. So check and check.

Yeah, well, as you know, Eric doesn’t drink. And his parents will probably only have a glass, so…

[sighs] Look, Marlena knows that she comes off as intimidating, you know? And she also seems very put together. But she’s just–she’s a real human with real problems. I mean, you know Marlena’s daughter Sami, Eric’s twin? I mean, she was a holy terror for years. She still is, in my opinion.

Yeah, Eric’s mentioned Sami once or twice.

Well, did he also mention that Marlena had an affair with John and it sent Sami off the deep end when she was a teenager?

Mm-mm. I can’t even imagine Marlena having an affair.

Yeah, well, you see? She’s not perfect, just like the rest of us.

[soft music] And I’ve found that if you ask Marlena for advice up front, you know, she feels useful, and you don’t feel judged, and then the rest of the night will just be smooth sailing.

Oh, that’s a slip of the tongue. It’s the Masters of Texts Cslub. It’s an online writing workshop, of which I am the star pupil, I might add.

I have to admit– I’m embarrassed to admit it, but there’s so much in here that I had no idea about. I mean, how have I never heard of this guy Bayard Rustin? I mean, he helped organize the March on Washington. An openly gay African American man in the s? I mean, this person is just incredibly brave, especially for that time.

Yeah, he was a true hero. And the reason you’ve never heard of him is that back then, a lot of people didn’t want to link together civil rights and gay rights and any other kind of equal rights as being a part of the same movement. And sadly, that’s still the case today. As if there’s only so much equality to go around.

Yeah. Well, I am really impressed that you’ve done the research, Leo, and brought all of this to light. In fact, I think, given the serious nature of the column, we should publish this under your own name and not the Lady Whistleblower byline.

Assuming we can publish it at all.

Yeah, it’s really a systemic thing, ’cause when you think about it, there’s just so many people of color that are living at poverty, so I just– I feel really lucky to be who I am and where I am.

Asks for my driver’s license and another form of ID and then asks me to put my phone number on it.

Oh, my God, are you kidding me? The first time, it was in a mall. It was a total stranger, and I was, like, three. And Mama was not happy about it, to put it mildly.

You know, I was just thinking, back when I was in high school, I was in the lunchroom, and this random girl, without even asking if she could touch my hair, she just comes up and starts touching my hair.

Oh, no.

And she’s like, oh, it’s so soft. And then when I went home, I told my mom about it. And then she gave me this whole lecture about microaggressions and how I should have stood up for myself. I mean, I was just trying to eat my lunch. And now I’ve worked up an appetite. I want to order the full breakfast menu.

I know Eric’s been spending a lot of time at the hospital with me and Holly, and I’m sure that hasn’t been easy for you, given our history. But I– I just want you to know that I appreciate how generous you’ve been about it.

I haven’t been that generous, Nicole.

You’re not gonna publish my piece? Why, because it’s too moving, too relevant?

Listen, I’m not saying that we’re not gonna publish it at all. I’m just–I’m saying that I think that we should think about it a little bit. I mean, “The Spectator” is not exactly on the cutting edge of social progressivism. Everett, what do you think?

I think that it’s our job to present a fair and balanced presentation of the news.

‘Cause when I first got engaged to my first husband, I wanted so badly for my dad to approve, because my mom sure didn’t. Yeah, she wasn’t exactly thrilled that I was marrying a white Jewish guy.

Hmm. Well, she got over it, I hope.

Sort of. But he disappeared on me, so it was all moot.

Well, you know, Chanel and I were just watching this documentary recently about the Lovings. She was Black. He was white. And so the state of Virginia refused to recognize their marriage. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which struck down all state laws banning interracial marriage, allowing us to marry whoever we wanted.

Mm, not whoever we wanted because not same-sex marriages. And, you know, being a Black woman who’s also bi, I just stopped labeling myself altogether, because it’s just exhausting being so many types of other.

Hmm.

Right. But choosing to not acknowledge race or gender, I mean, that’s pretty exhausting too, right?

Yeah.

I mean, especially if that’s who you are.

[sighs]

You know, I can’t believe that we’ve never talked about this before.

Yeah, well, I’m really glad that we’re talking about it now.

[chuckles] And I want to thank those of you who’ve already come out to serve your community this morning and to encourage those who haven’t to spend your afternoon volunteering.

[chuckles] You have the power and responsibility to improve your community in some way, big or small. May we continue to live in Dr. King’s spirit every day. Now, we’re– oh, a lot of us, we’re familiar with many of his words. So I’ve chosen to begin with a quote from that great writer James Baldwin.

[coughs] Not everything that is faced…

[voice breaking] Can be changed–

[softly] Can be changed.

But nothing…

Nothing… both: Can be changed until it is faced.

What do you mean you haven’t been generous? And not only have you been understanding about Eric spending time with me and Holly. Oh, my God, I mean, Sloan, you– you let me off the hook when I kidnapped your son.

Yeah, very reluctantly, believe me, especially whenever the next day–

You know, right after I told you to stay away from Jude, I saw you having lunch with Eric and Holly, looking like the happy family you used to be, all for the world to see. And, you know, that was pretty upsetting to me.

Would be for me too. But what did Eric say when you mentioned it to him?

I didn’t tell him. I don’t know why I didn’t tell him. But now I’m glad that he had that time with Holly.

[sniffles] He’ll always love her… just like he’ll always love you. And I’ll just have to learn to live with that. I should follow up with Leo. Thank you again, Nicole, for the advice.

Well, what matters is in the eye of the beholder. Like, for instance, people may think that owning a bakery doesn’t matter. But I like to think of it as, I help people celebrate life. Like, sometimes I create them special cakes and things like that that makes them feel special. Like the other day, there was this lady, and she was in hospice, and she had been a beekeeper, and so I made her these little bumblebee cookies. And when she saw them, she was so excited. And the look on her face, it was just like, she was so happy. She was so grateful.

Wow.

Yeah, and then even with my mom, you know, she’s all about giving back, and she’s the mayor, but then she also does this podcast. And she’s actually recording an episode this morning. I can’t wait to hear it when I get home.

[coughs] Oh, sorry. And sadly, you also had homeless addicts and wayward kids from the projects who tried to escape reality the only way they could: using drugs. And, well, that’s going on today, as we–

Well, to state the obvious, that depends on how or whether Lucas can pull this off.

Well, as I told Harris, Lucas was able to get John and Steve and me to Orpheus. He is very smart. I have complete confidence in him, Kate.

[sighs] That’s very touching. It is. But if he gets caught, he could die.

In my opinion, that is very unlikely. What is more likely is that Lucas gets his life back.

I haven’t told anyone this, but when we spread our son’s ashes outside, I said a prayer. And it’s been a long time since I prayed. And look what happened. Holly overdosed and almost died and is in a coma. So if I ever had any doubt then, it is very clear now how God feels about me.

When tragedies befall us, all we can try and do is remain as strong as we can and to try and focus as best we can on what we still have to be grateful for.

And he– he would never hurt her, never. But my son is in a jail cell right now, and he got beaten by a grown man because EJ refuses to– he revoked his bail, and he will not charge him as a minor. He wants to charge him as an adult for possession of illegal drugs, Nic.

And I hate to ask this of you, but is there any way you can just get him to reason a little bit because I know you’re scared to death of losing your little girl. And I hope to God she pulls through. I know that EJ feels helpless about Holly’s condition.

I know Tate said they were Holly’s drugs. Do you believe that to be true?

Nic, I can’t be sure. There’s no way of knowing.

I’ve been thinking you confessed to protecting Tate. So you wouldn’t do that if you didn’t think he was innocent, right?

No, no, no, Nic. To be honest with you, I didn’t give a damn whether he was guilty or not guilty at that point. I just knew that EJ was targeting him, and I wanted to deflect his wrath on me. That was my parental instinct that kicked in. All that said, though, yeah, I believe my son is telling the truth.

So you think Holly is the one using drugs and EJ and I could have helped her, but we were just oblivious?

No. Nicole, Holly has had a difficult life thus far. I mean, it’s been unstable. She didn’t get to know her father at all. Your life, personal life, romantic life, just like mine, for dear God has been erratic and up and down, and that can affect a kid. We know as parents that these kids, they can put things right under our noses, and we can easily overlook them. So yes, it’s possible that Holly could have resorted to something like that.

Damn you, Brady. Damn you. How dare you talk about my daughter like that?

I don’t know who I’m madder at, Brady, or Tate, or the dealers, or myself. Because if Brady is right about this, then I’m the one at fault here. This is my fault.

No, no. Nicole, this is not your fault. Do you hear me? Brady is just trying to convince you that it’s Holly’s fault, so he can get his son off the hook, and that is not going to happen.

EJ, I just– I feel so helpless. Because if I lose Holly, then I don’t–

But it took years for you to recover.

That was years ago. There have been extraordinary advances in modern medicine since then– you know that. And I promise you Holly is going to get the best care in the world. I’m sorry, I could not convince Nicole to do anything. Out of desperation, I made a call to Mayor Price and demanded that she fire EJ, but she said that he’s still operating within the confines of the law. And until he crosses a line, she can’t interfere.

Last night was hard, obviously, but now that I know our baby is at peace, I am at peace too. So I will be back soon. Okay.

“With the baby”? Oh, you mean you’re with Nicole’s baby. Well, let me tell you what I found out from my baby, meaning the love of my life.

Look, it really isn’t a good time right now.

Oh, well, it is going to be much worse if you don’t listen and listen hard Miss Lying, Baby-stealing Sack of You Know What. I know you already know– so don’t pretend that you don’t– that my Dimitri was sent to supermax, meaning I have no idea if or when I will see his gorgeous face again, and that is on you.

Well, look, I’m really sorry. I am. I just–it’s a federal prison. There’s nothing I can do.

Well, there is something you could have done, something you should have done before he was sent there, isn’t there? Because you promised me if he turned himself in, you would have the most serious charges dropped. And instead of that, he’s now in the damn penitentiary.

I am speaking to you in a more civilized tone than a baby thief deserves, and second, I already told you what I want, money and power, which still won’t make up for the fact that I am not with my love. My heart. Look, I know that we were skeptical in the beginning, I mean, about the relationship. Eric had broken up with Nicole, and… we certainly had our concerns about Sloan. But I think they are gonna do all they can to make this relationship work.

Well, they’re a family now. God bless ’em, and for the sake of that sweet little boy, let’s hope they can.

I do hope that. And I hope they can really enjoy the happiness that a new baby brings.

I’m, um–I’m at the square. But the baby’s gone. Someone stole our baby boy.

You know, I do wonder how Sloan is gonna manage it all. She’s got that very high-powered career. I can’t imagine she’ll be giving that up.

I wouldn’t think so, no. She seems pretty driven, very ambitious, and raising an infant is a very, very demanding job by itself.

[cell phone ringing]

Yeah. Oh, sorry. Huh, it’s Eric. Hi, honey. We were just talking about you.

Mom, hey, it’s Jude. He’s been kidnapped.

Oh, dear God. Another missing baby.

And since Chad didn’t like that, to put it mildly, he bought Gwen’s half of the paper just so he could fire him.

Wow, that’s, uh– that’s pretty extreme, not to mention crappy.

And just the guilt from that is– it’s eating me alive. I can’t keep living in this deception. Melinda, we have to do something.

Have you considered reaching out to your dad? I mean, the guy’s the head of the ISA. He practically runs the world. Maybe he can help Tate.

Yeah, I can’t get ahold of him. He’s on some undercover mission somewhere. My mom said she doesn’t know where.

Andrew? He’s not gonna pull any strings for me. He probably thinks that Tate’s a big screwup like me. Maybe he’s just a big, colossal screwup.

But it didn’t happen anywhere. Marlena, it happened here, under my nose. I just have to wonder whether… I was just being selfish when I brought him back here. Was I being selfish? I mean, did I have his best interests at heart or mine? My God, and everything that’s going on with my son, I still have lost custody of my daughter as well.

Look. That may well turn around, but if it doesn’t, it’s a travesty.

And, Brady, as far as Tate goes, you didn’t force him. He wanted to stay here, didn’t he?

We can’t always make our children do what we’d like them to do. But when they suffer, we suffer. But we have to let them make a choice. And that done, if it’s a bad choice, then– then there are consequences. And that’s exactly how they learn.

So all we can hope for is that Holly pulls through this, remembers everything that happened that night, and she can set the record straight.

You are not thinking straight. The current DA– that would be EJ DiMera– he believes that the baby he lost is his biological child. If he finds out that we took this baby, he will nail us to the wall for kidnapping. We would be risking everything by exposing ourselves– our reputations, our freedom. Our lives would be over. Do you not understand that? Listen, I heard what EJ is doing to Brady Black’s kid. And if you think that’s bad, wait till you see what he does to us if you reveal the truth about this baby. Yeah, well, I somehow managed to reel in his crazy spending just for a little while. But who knows how long that’s gonna last or what he’s even gonna demand next?

You know, I suffered a tremendous amount of guilt. I went to prison for the crime that I committed. While I was there, I learned a lot about myself. I had regret and shame… Something I’ll always have to live with. But while I was there, I remembered that I have to forgive myself.

I’m really glad that you were able to do that. But you have to understand that Tate’s situation is different to yours because he’s innocent. And Holly chose to take those drugs herself.

Listen, I understand that. But no matter how it went down, we’re all hurting here. I just want you to know if there’s anything that I can do to help, I’m here for you.

Actually, maybe there is something you can do.

No, and to make matters worse, your brother EJ, he’s on the warpath. He thinks it’s all Tate’s fault. He thinks that the drugs were Tate’s, that he convinced Holly to take the drugs, and the only reason that she is clinging to life right now is because of my son. He has managed to revoke my son’s bail, and my son is in a jail cell. And he’s gonna be tried as an adult– as an adult.

Well… I had no idea this was happening. Rachel and I have been out of town, so…

I know you’ve been out of town. I don’t know what I’m gonna– I don’t know what I’m gonna say to our daughter. I got to tell her that I stood her up. Sorry I forgot that I was gonna see you, and your brother’s in jail. Happy New Year, honey.

No, and I have no idea what they were discussing, honestly, and they sort of clammed up the minute they saw me, but… since they were at the exact spot that Holly Jonas had OD’d, it just definitely aroused my suspicion.

[sighs] So I know words are cold comfort right now, but Holly is–she’s young, and she’s strong-willed, and she’s gonna survive this. And with that strong will, she’s fighting very hard to come back to us. OK? And she will.

So one thing I found out in my research is that EJ apparently has more than dabbled in the drug trade in recent years.

[clears throat] Yeah, it is, in fact, what got him killed. Yeah. But EJ becoming a drug pusher again, I mean, I don’t know, it just seems to me like he’s gotten his act together lately. Why else would the mayor make him DA?

Yeah, yeah, I–I hear that. I hear that. But from what I’ve dug up so far, Salem’s drug central seems to be right behind the back alley of the Bistro, which your other brother owns.

Right.

[chuckles] Yeah, but selling drugs doesn’t seem to be Stefan’s thing either.

Why is that?

I mean, well, he doesn’t need the money, for starters.

No, totally. Obviously not. But money’s not everybody’s motivation.

[dramatic music]

Tripp, I told you already, there is nothing going on at the Bistro, and there’s nothing that you need to worry about, OK? But listen, if you are so determined to stay in Salem and let go of the woman that you love, I can’t do anything about it, OK? I am tired. I’m going to bed.

Not yet. No, not until you tell me why you seemed so happy that I was moving to Hong Kong.

Oh, my God, for God’s sake, can a mother not be happy for her son? Wendy seems like a great girl, OK, and you two are obviously crazy about each other, so–

Yeah, that’s true, that’s true, but the Ava Vitali that I know would have tried to talk her son out of moving halfway across the world.

It just–it–it struck me as a bit strange, you know, that–that Stefan was at the loading docks. I mean, sure, you know, that’s where deliveries come in, but there weren’t any deliveries at that time. So what was he doing there? And why was he with EJ?

Not just because of what happened to Holly, but now Tate’s been arrested. I mean, this is two young people that have their whole lives ahead of them.

Well, because… my parents, unlike your mom, Tripp, they have a whole village around them. And I’m still gonna try to visit them as often as I can. And yes, I’m their only child now, but… they have aunts and uncles and cousins popping out of the woodwork. Your mom only has you. Tripp… please don’t feel guilty. OK, this is my choice, and I know it’s the right one for me.

And I’m so glad you feel that way. It’s just… I–I can’t stop myself from worrying about so many things. I mean, I just–I just wish that it was simpler, us being together here.

Tripp… I know that you were excited and happy when I first came through that door and I told you I was staying. But now it seems like you’re having some kind of… delayed reaction. And if you are, just say it, OK? Just–just tell me that you’re disappointed that I’m coming back, that in your heart of hearts, you were relieved that I was on my way to Hong Kong, that you really want me to move there.

No, Maggie, I don’t blame Tate. He’s just a kid. But the person I blame the most is myself, I mean, for not realizing that Holly was having issues, being self-consumed too much of the time, feeling sorry for myself, and not paying attention to her.

You know, I think it’s great that Chad is having you do this deep dive into the drug trade in Salem.

I guess I didn’t really tell a lot of people about it, mainly because… this really good friend of mine died. He–he OD’d. And he was a musician, really talented pianist and a songwriter. Anyway, he was a great guy overall, and I was the one that found him. So it was a little shocking and a little…traumatizing.

It’s OK. Why am I telling you this? I guess I didn’t tell you because I was determined during that time to– to suppress those feelings and those memories and focus on the amazing woman that I was falling in love with.

We’re all praying for you, you sweet girl, and sending white light and whatever other healing didgeridoohickeys we have.
