Nick: Hey, sharon, I got your message. You here?Hell

Surprise!

[ Noisemaker blows ]

[ Laughter ]

Sharon: Happy birthday!

[ Cheering ]

Nick: Okay.

[ Laughter ]

Amanda: Okay. You hate it. The movie, it’s convoluted.

Devon: No, it’s — no, it’s fine.

Amanda: Well, then what’s wrong? Are you thinking about the baby?

Devon: No, just — no. I’m thinking about work a little bit, just ’cause I’ve been neglecting hamilton-winters lately.

Amanda: No, no, not neglecting. You’ve had a lot on your mind, and it’s understandable. You have a really big decision to make about dominic.

Devon: Yeah, I know that. But it’s still the company that I built with neil. I can’t just let it fall apart. Just — just got to get my head together, that’s all.

Amanda: Yeah, I know. I understand all of that, and i hear everything you’re saying. But I can’t help thinking that it’s still about dom.

Chance: What’s that smile for?

Abby: I was just listening to you read dom a bedtime story. “Chugga choo choo” — mm, really put some feeling into it. It was adorable. I hope you don’t mind that I was listening. I didn’t mean to intrude.

Chance: No, it’s fine. It’s probably better that way, right? I have some back-up.

Abby: No, no, it wasn’t like that.

Chance: It’s cool. Don’t worry about it. I’m gonna go make some tea, okay? I’ll be right back.

[ Cheering ]

Nick: Okay, you guys got me. I was not expecting this.

Noah: Well, we wanted to do something for your birthday on your birthday, but you took off to milan, so we decided to do it now.

Mariah: And we couldn’t let summer be the only one to celebrate you.

Sharon: And rey had to work tonight, but he says the next round of beers is on him.

Nick: Well, I’m touched that you all went to this trouble.

Faith: That’s what family’s for.

Nick: Thanks, kiddo. Moses, tessa, my kids are obligated to be here, you know, but you two chose to be here, and that means a lot.

Tessa: Oh, wouldn’t miss it.

Moses: Yeah, excited to be here. And devon’s passing on his best wishes, along with some light ribbing.

Nick: Oh, no, no, no. This is a birthday party, not a roast.

Well…

Faith: Actually…

Nick: What?

Faith: A roast sounds like a lot more fun, doesn’t it? Otherwise, the only jokes told here tonight will be your lame dad ones, and what kind of party is that?

Tessa: It’s hard to argue with that logic.

Mariah: Yeah.

Nick: Yeah, are you guys all ganging up on me? And you — you set me up for this?

Sharon: I was only in charge of the venue and the menu.

[ Laughter ]

Nick: Right. I just remembered I’ve got this very important root canal I got to —

Mariah: Oh, hey, hey.

Faith: Nice try, nice try.

Mariah: No, no, no. Have a seat, birthday boy.

Nick: [ Sighs ] And a crown.

Noah: So pretty.

Nick: Thank you.

[ Blows noisemaker ]

[ Laughter ] Nyquil severe gives you powerful relief

Nick: Yeah, so I’m gonna be later than I thought. Sharon and my kids ambushed me with a surprise birthday party. I’m not sure what I’ve signed up for, so…

[ Chuckles ] Yeah, thank you, monique. That’s very sweet of you. I’ll see you when I get home, and just give christian a hug for me. Okay, thank you. Well, I’m glad christian’s gonna be sleeping through this one. You know, he’s still at the age where he thinks his dad can do no wrong, and I plan on keeping him there for as long as possible.

Sharon: Well, seems like that strategy’s working because all we heard about was how great dad is the whole time he was staying with us.

Nick: I’m sure. And you agreed with everything he said, right?

Sharon: Oh, naturally.

Nick: [ Inhales sharply ] I don’t know, I don’t like the looks of that. I mean, my kids say it’s gonna be a roast.

Tessa: Mm-hmm.

Nick: I don’t have anything to worry about, right?

Moses: Well, I’m sworn to secrecy.

Tessa: Yeah, I’ll just say i wouldn’t get too comfortable. I’d be afraid.

Moses: Very afraid.

Abby: Thank you.

Chance: Too hot?

Abby: No, no, it’s perfect. Thank you. Actually, can we talk about before? I know it’s been a long day, but I just — I don’t want you to think that I was checking up on you or that I don’t think that you’re capable of reading our son a bedtime story.

Chance: The story I can do, it’s — it’s the other stuff.

Abby: [ Scoffs ] You do everything a father does. You love and take care of our son. That is a father, and that is everything.

Chance: But is it enough?

Abby: Chance, look, I — i know that feeling of not feeling like you’re enough. I couldn’t carry our son, so we had to get a surrogate. I couldn’t keep him and mariah out of danger. I couldn’t even nurse him after he was born. So, yes, I understand that need to — to want, to actually need to do more.

Chance: But you did everything you could, abby.

Abby: But, at the time, it ached. Even before dominic was born, i wanted to give him the whole world. And I always will. But what I’ve learned is that parenting is a journey. There’s no endpoint. You just got to keep going, both of you — the parent and the child. And there’s no one right way to do things that somehow no one told you about. Your way is the right way because you love him.

Chance: [ Sighs ] You must be so worn out, looking after your son and your husband.

Abby: Hey. I can honestly say that you and dominic are the greatest gifts of my life.

Chance: But you shouldn’t have to deal with my problems.

Abby: Why? You have to deal with mine. Isn’t that what marriage is all about? Doing life together as a team? Look, I am gonna go take a shower. But I can turn it into a bubble bath for two if you’d like to join.

Chance: [ Chuckles ]

[ Exhales sharply ] How about a rain check?

Abby: Always.

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Noah: Alright, take a seat, old man.

Nick: Oh, man.

Faith: Don’t stress, dad. We all came here tonight to celebrate you because we all love you and think you’re the best dad in the whole world. Not to say you can’t be overprotective at times. I feel sorry for anyone who’s ever hurt my feelings, teased me, or looked at me weird. We all remember danny obermeyer.

Moses: Wait, who’s he? Like, an ex-boyfriend or something?

Faith: He was a second-grader that tripped me during a soccer game. He got the “newman death glare,” and I don’t think he’s ever been the same.

Moses: Wait, what’s the “newman death glare”?

Nick: It’S…nothing. They’re exaggerating. It’s just a minor look of disapproval. You’ve never seen it. Don’t worry about it.

Noah: Yeah, you better hope you never do.

Mariah: I mean, maybe you should give him a taste, just in case he ever steps out of bounds.

Nick: Nah, it’s not gonna be necessary.

Tessa: I mean, I’d like to see it.

Mariah: Come on.

Tessa: It’s like you’re looking through me.

[ Laughter ]

Moses: That is legit terrifying.

[ Laughter ]

Sharon: Well, that’s the point. You know, there was this one year where a teenager stole noah’s bucket of halloween candy.

Noah: Oh, yeah, and then dad, he chased him down for like three blocks and dragged him back by the scruff of his neck and made him apologize.

Nick: I think we all learned a very valuable lesson that day.

Tessa: Don’t mess with your kid?

Nick: You got it.

[ Laughter ]

Faith: You may go overboard sometimes, but we all know it’s because you’d do anything for the people that you care about. And we’re all lucky to have you looking out for us. I love you, dad.

Nick: I love you.

Faith: Mm.

Mariah: Well, well, that was very sweet and all. But now it’s my turn, and I’m not gonna be that easy on you.

[ All groan ] Yo you ready?

Mariah: Alright, everybody, hold onto your seats because we are about to take a dive into nick newman’s love life.

Sharon: No!

Mariah: Yeah.

Sharon: Do we have to go there?

Mariah: We do.

Nick: Really? I mean, I guess it’s fair game. A lot to skewer me about, but i don’t have a love life right now, so [Blows noisemaker]

Mariah: Oh, well, we all know that that’s not gonna last very long.

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: Because he’s a hopeless romantic.

Tessa: Oh, yeah, well, look who’s talking.

Mariah: I will admit that, up until recently, I was a hardened cynic, and given noah’s recent attitude, I mean, I guess it runs in the family, so maybe that’s what you need, though. You need two world-weary, jaded spirits to, I don’t know, screen your future dates. It’s not a bad idea.

Nick: No, no, that’s a hard pass. Sorry.

Noah: Come on. What, you don’t trust us?

Nick: I am not gonna be dating for a while.

Faith: Yeah.

Mariah: Oh, sure.

Nick: I’m serious. Not happening.

Mariah: Well, there’s nothing wrong with being in love with love. It’s because you have such a wide, open heart. You know, it’s one of the reasons why you were able to accept cassie and me into your family, so there are no complaints here. Happy birthday, nick.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Thank you. Hug it out?

Mariah: Yeah.

Nick: Alright.

[ Laughter ]

Noah: Okay, okay, my turn. Well, I’m glad that I can be back in town to watch my dad grow old — er, older.

Mariah: Wow!

Nick: Careful. I mean, careful. I’m pretty sure I could still beat you in basketball.

Nick: Oh, I’m sure that you could, but that’s just ’cause i haven’t played in like, what, 10 years.

[ Laughter ] No, but that’s what I love about you. You know, you were always at all my games, cheering me on when i was a kid. And as my interests grew into areas that were way out of your expertise, you were with me every step of the way. All the photography shows, art installations. I know I wasn’t the only one that was receiving that kind of encouragement. You did the same for summer when she found her love for fashion.

Faith: You started listening to tigirlily when you found out I liked them.

Nick: I genuinely like their music.

Faith: Yeah, I know that because I can hear you singing them in the shower, which is almost enough to make me stop liking them.

[ Laughter ]

Noah: Our dad is proof that no father can be too involved in his children’s lives.

Nick: Does that mean you’re gonna accept my job offer?

Sharon: What job offer? You want to hire noah?

[ Jazz music playing ]

[ Baby crying ]

Devon: Amanda, do you hear that? Amanda?

[ Music stops ] Hello? Is that dominic? Dom!

[ Baby crying ] Dominic! I got you. Hang on. Daddy’s coming.

Amanda: Devon? Hey, devon. Hey. You okay? I think you were having a bad dream.

Devon: It was awful.

Mariah: Uh, does anybody want to help me with the birthday cake?

Faith: Yep.

Moses: Yeah, right behind you.

Sharon: So, nick.

Nick: Yes, I offered a job working with me at new hope.

Sharon: Oh. Is that what you meant when you said you were hoping to offer him some kind of stability? Is he gonna be doing design work for you?

Nick: No, it’s something completely different. I actually want him to run the entire organization with me. I’m really hoping to expand. Now, I know it’s a big shift, you know, working at new hope, from, like, doing art installations in london museums, but I think noah’s looking for something that will give him some meaning in life, and that’s certainly what new hope has done for me. He’s got a great head on his shoulders, real big heart. Plus, I think this could get him some healing from whatever it is that happened to him while he was away.

Sharon: But he hasn’t given you an answer yet?

Nick: No, not yet. I know he still has adam’s job offer that he’s taking in consideration, you know, the one that you were pushing him to accept.

Sharon: I didn’t push him to accept it. I just asked him not to rule it out solely because it was coming from adam. I, of course, want our son to do whatever’s best for him, and selfishly, whatever keeps him in town.

Nick: Same. This gives him two great options, you know, to choose from. But hopefully, he does decide to stay in genoa city for a very long time.

Tessa: Well, tonight’s so fun. Nick seems to be having a great time.

Noah: Yeah.

Tessa: And he seems to be so happy to have you back.

Noah: Yeah, I’m not gonna lie, it’s nice to be surrounded by the family again. Speaking of which, how are the baby plans coming along?

Tessa: Well, I mean, we just started. We have been looking into adoption.

Noah: That’s amazing. Really, I mean, that’s gonna be one really lucky kid — or kids. You know, who knows?

Tessa: Well, let’s take it one step at a time, but I’m excited.

Noah: Congratulations.

Tessa: Thank you. And just for the record, nick isn’t the only one that’s glad to have you back. It’s really nice having my friend so close by.

Happy birthday to you

happy birthday to you

happy birthday, dear nick

happy birthday to you

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Thank you.

[ Laughter ]

Devon: [ Sighs ] It was dominic.

Amanda: What happened?

Devon: He was crying. He was — he was — he kept crying and crying, and I was looking for him. And I couldn’t find him. He was — he needed me, and i wasn’t there for him.

Amanda: Doesn’t go away. When you were little and you couldn’t count on your mom.

Devon: No. This is a different thing.

Amanda: Babe.

Devon: What?

Amanda: You were there. You were that child that someone couldn’t get to for whatever reason. You needed a parent, and they weren’t there. Trust me, I know because that’s my story, too. And I know that you probably promised yourself a million times to be better, to be different, that your child would never feel alone or afraid.

Devon: Yeah. But I don’t have a child, according to the world. So…

Amanda: Well, your heart says otherwise. You have so much love and kindness inside of you, and you share that with everyone around you. You did not even hesitate to help abby and chance build a family, and that was just the love that you have for a friend. Now you love that baby. Of course you want to protect him.

Devon: What if he’s not mine to protect, and that’s why i couldn’t find him in my dream? ‘Cause I’m not meant to.

Amanda: Is that how you really feel? Better skin from your body wash?

“The young and the restless” will continue.

Noah: That is a lot of candles.

Faith: Yeah, is it getting hot in here?

Tessa: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: I mean, I think we should have a fire extinguisher just in case.

Tessa: Oh, she’s kidding, she’s kidding.

Nick: Okay, does anybody have anything else they would like to say?

Moses: Nope. I don’t want any part of the “newman death glare.”

Nick: No, you don’T.

[ Laughter ]

Sharon: Yeah, let’s lay off the old guy.

Nick: You too? You traitor.

Sharon: Sorry.

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: Alright, well, do the honors.

Nick: [ Blowing ]

[ Cheers and applause ]

Faith: What’d you wish for?

Nick: Uh…I got to keep that to myself.

Mariah: Oh, come on, you can tell us. I mean, the roast portion of the evening is over. I swear.

Nick: I have three wishes — cake, champagne, and presents.

Mariah: Uh…

Nick: Really, no presents?

Sharon: Oh, of course there are presents. Just sit down, have some cake. We’ll bring them out to you.

Mariah: We got you.

[ Laughter ]

Chance: [ Sighs ]

[ Explosion ]

[ Rattling, clanging ]

[ Rumbling ]

Abby: Oh, shh, shh, shh. It’s okay, it’s okay. Mommy’s got you. Ohh, I’m sorry I didn’t hear you. Mommy was in the shower. Shh, yeah, and daddy probably fell asleep, so he didn’t hear you either. But it’s okay ’cause mommy is here right now. Yes, let’s just snuggle for a little bit, and then off to sleepy time. My little baby. Shh, shh, shh, shh. Oh.

Amanda: Did you mean what you said? Do you really want to take a step back from dom?

Devon: I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m thinking these days, ’cause, like, I’ll — I feel like I’m doing what’s best sometimes, and then I feel like I’m just doing what’s best for me. Nobody else. ‘Cause I have this natural instinct to look after dominic, and I think about him and i worry, and…I’m dreaming about him now. And… I don’t know, I just… I know that chance needs time so he can — he can get his head right and focus on being a dad, but then I don’t even want to just, like, fill in until he’s ready for that, I want to be there all the time for the rest of my life. And I don’t know if that’s selfish to feel like that.

[ Sighs ]

Amanda: No. No. Absolutely not. Listen, I know that I have my own issues wrapped up in this, but it is not selfish to want to give that child all of the love in the world. Every child deserves to be loved and protected. They deserve someone who wants to be there, someone who dreams about them. There’s nothing wrong with that. Dru and neil, they gave you that. You felt that love, so now you want to pass that on, and that love, that is — it’s the most important thing in the world. So I’m not gonna let you feel like there is something wrong with that. Okay?

Nick: Are you kidding me? Courtside tickets to the bucks.

Sharon: Wow.

Nick: These are impossible to get and very expensive. How’d you pull this off?

Mariah: Well, it definitely helps having a famous pop star for a girlfriend. We can pull a few strings.

Nick: I am blown away.

Mariah: You’re welcome.

[ Chuckles ]

Nick: Thank you.

Mariah: Top that.

Noah: Geez, I don’t know if i can.

[ Laughter ] But, uh, here you go, dad.

Nick: Alright. Ah, wine. And you went with the personal touch.

Noah: I did, actually. Yeah, I designed a bespoke label in honor of the underground.

Nick: This is super cool, son. Thank you.

Noah: Happy birthday.

Moses: Well, here’s a little something.

Faith: Oh.

Nick: Alright.

Moses: Devon helped me pick it out.

Nick: Okay.

Moses: It used to be our dad’s favorite. It’s retro — acid jazz from the ’90s.

Nick: Did you hear that? The ’90s are retro.

Sharon: As if.

[ Laughter ]

Nick: Thank you, moses. I love it.

Moses: You’re welcome.

Faith: Here you go.

Nick: Alright. I am crushing it in presents right now.

[ Laughter ]

Faith: It’s a collection of photos of the both of us.

Nick: Really? Faith, this is great. Thank you.

Faith: Oh, that’s not all. There’s also a book of dad jokes in case you’re ready for some fresh material. God knows the rest of us are.

Mariah: Absolutely.

Nick: Okay, point taken. Point taken.

Sharon: Here is a basket of your favorite muffins.

Nick: Okay. Look at all these delicious items, and with cake. I mean, you trying to fatten me up for the kill?

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: Is that an option?

Sharon: Okay, you two. And there is one last gift that christian helped me pick out. Speaking of the ’90s…

Nick: Oh, boy. Oh, man! This reminds me of my favorite shirt.

Sharon: It might actually be your favorite old shirt because I found it in a vintage shop.

Nick: Do you remember how crushed I was when I lost this?

Sharon: You talked about it for weeks.

Nick: More like months.

Sharon: So, when I saw that in the store, I just had to get it for you. It brought back some nice memories for me, and I thought it would for you, too.

Nick: I’m gonna wear it tomorrow. Put on some of my old jeans. Grunge was everything in the ’90s, you guys.

Faith: It’s back in style, dad.

Nick: Wow.

[ Laughter ] Well, thank you. They’re all perfect.

Sharon: Glad you like them. Plaque psoriasis, the burning, itching.

Nick: Alright. I just want to thank you all for a very special night. Yeah, I’m getting to the age where I don’t really want to be counting the years that I have.

[ Laughter ] But thank you for reminding me of how old I really am.

Noah: Happy to be of service.

Mariah: Not a problem.

Nick: It’s also nice to be reminded of how amazing my kids are and my friends. And I’ve got it really good.

Faith: Uh-oh, you’re getting sappy with your advanced age.

Moses: Yeah, you gonna cry, old man? Uh-oh, what have I done?

Faith: He’s kidding, I think.

[ Laughter ]

Moses: Whew!

Tessa: Well, age is just a number, but you know what makes everyone feel young? Some retro music. That’s what this party needs.

Sharon: Oh, great idea. Yeah.

Mariah: Alright, what do you got?

Tessa: Alright.

Sharon: Oh, I like that.

Mariah: Oh.

Sharon: Okay. Mm-hmm.

Mariah: Get on board.

Tessa: Yeah?

[ Indistinct conversations ]

Abby: Did you fall asleep?

Chance: Oh, yeah, I, um… I just got a little lost in my head, dozed off.

Abby: That’s what I figured. Well, dom woke up. I think he wanted the sequel to chugga choo’s story.

[ Chuckles ] But I put him back to sleep. We should get some rest, too. Coming up?

Chance: Yeah, can we just sit for, like, a second?

Abby: Yeah.

Mariah: “Why do fathers take an extra pair of socks when they go golfing? In case they get a hole in one.”

Nick: Boom.

Mariah: [ Laughs ]

Faith: I’m starting to think the dad joke book was a bad idea.

Mariah: Okay, just one more, one more. Okay. Um…let’s see. Ah. “What do you call a fish wearing a bow tie? So’fish’ticated.”

Faith: Please make it stop.

[ Laughter ]

Nick: No, more, more.

Faith: Please. Oh, god.

Mariah: No.

Nick: Hey, I don’t mean to put you on the spot, but have you given any thought to working with me at new hope?

Noah: I’m really impressed you guys have done over at new hope — I really am — but accepting your offer would mean backing out of newman media, and I don’t think grandpa and adam would be too stoked about that.

Nick: I think they might understand it more than you think, especially your grandpa. He is really big on the father-son bonding thing. He might really appreciate it if we were working together as a team.

Noah: Look, I’m not saying no, okay? But can you just give me a little bit more time to consider the offer?

Faith: Oh, my gosh, you and tessa are having a baby?!

Mariah: Um, well, we’re very early on in the adoption process and getting all the information. You know, it’s — it’s probably gonna be a long while off, so…

Tessa: Well, I thought we agreed that today was just about nick.

Mariah: I know, I know we did, but faith started talking about making a hat of the extra bows and ribbons, and that got us on the baby shower track, and then about babies, and…it just slipped out. I’m sorry. It was supposed to be about you, nick. I apologize.

Nick: Do not apologize for that. I mean, the family getting bigger is, like, the best news ever.

Faith: I will babysit whenever you want.

Moses: Yeah, and I can help, too. I’ve had a lot of practice with dominic.

Mariah: Oh, wow. Well, you know, of course we would love you to, if you’re not in college by then.

[ Laughter ]

Faith: Wait, you knew the whole time, mom?

Sharon: I’ve only known for a short while, and it wasn’t my secret to tell. I’m very happy for both of them, though. The world is full of make or break moments.

Faith: So what exactly did you tell your mom about me when you went home for the holidays?

Moses: All good things.

Sharon: Here’s some cake for you to bring home to amanda and devon.

Moses: Thanks. And thank you for including me in the party tonight.

Sharon: Of course, yeah. We’re happy to have you.

Moses: Bye.

Sharon: Bye.

Mariah: So how was summer enjoying married life and parenthood?

Nick: She’s doing great. I’m so proud of the way she’s handled all these changes in her life. I mean, she is killing it over there, and little harrison has absolutely stolen her heart.

Mariah: Well, I completely understand that.

Tessa: Well, we are definitely going to have a lot more time to prepare than summer did for parenthood, because, wow, there is just so much to do just in the first stages of the adoption process. We’re gonna have to do home interviews and so much paperwork.

Nick: Well, I’m sure it’s all gonna work out.

Tessa: Yeah, definitely.

Mariah: No doubt.

Sharon: Hey, you leaving?

Noah: Yeah, unless you need me to hang back and clean.

Sharon: No, I think I can handle it myself, and, you know, besides, you’re looking a little tired.

Noah: Yeah, worn out from all the dancing.

Sharon: Hmm.

Mariah: Oh, my god, that’s hysterical.

Noah: Good night, mom.

Sharon: Good night.

Nick: You two.

[ Laughter ] Too much.

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: Too much of something, I’ll tell you.

Abby: Oh, I have got to get under the covers. Do you want to go check on dom one more time before we go to bed?

Chance: I’d love that.

Abby: Yeah.

Devon: I don’t want to make any decisions tonight. I’m too tired. And I think I understand what that dream was about — it’s just the fear that all parents have. But I’m not gonna make life changes based on a dream.

Amanda: Okay. You do what you need to do. You take your time. I’m gonna head out, though, okay? So if you want to talk of if you just want to sleep, I’ll be up there waiting, okay?

Devon: Okay.

Amanda: Night.

Devon: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: Good night, girls. Love you.

Tessa: Good night.

Mariah: We’ll be upstairs if you need anything, okay?

Nick: Thank you again for the tickets and the good-natured insults.

Mariah: Anytime. Love you, mom.

Tessa: Bye.

Mariah: See ya.

Nick: Good night.

Sharon: So, good party?

Nick: It was perfect.

Sharon: Hey, wait a minute. You are the guest of honor. There’s no way you’re gonna help clean up.

Nick: Well, it’s my party, i can clean up if I want to.

Sharon: Oh. [ Laughs ] Dad jokes. I think you’ve hit your quota for the night.

Nick: Yeah, thanks to faith, I have an unlimited supply.

Sharon: Oh. Did you see her with moses? The two of them are so smitten with each other.

Nick: They’re pretty adorable, and it was awesome to see mariah and tessa in such a great place, too.

Sharon: Yeah. You know, when they first told me they had plans to adopt, i was a little bit worried. I know there’s so many possibilities for delays and problems, and you hear all these stories about people having their hopes dashed. And mariah’s been so fragile, but, you know, I think that she’s getting stronger every day. Did you notice that she barely reacted when moses brought up dominic’s name?

Nick: I did see that, and i noticed that you were paying very close attention, as well. I mean, we’re never gonna be done parenting, are we?

Sharon: Never. Um…by the way, what did noah say about the job?

Nick: He hasn’t given me an answer, but I’m feeling good about it.

Sharon: Okay, me too. I mean, I am still worried about him, but I think you’re right, he needs a new direction.

Nick: I’m confident he’s gonna find it.

Sharon: Like you did. You seem a lot more at peace with yourself since you’ve come home from milan.

Nick: Well, I realize that i have everything I need to be happy. My family is my touchstone.

Sharon: I saw a lot of that in action tonight.

Nick: Well, I want to thank you for putting this whole evening together. I loved it. We really have created something special with our kids, haven’t we?

Sharon: And it’s only getting stronger.

Nick: That’s what I wished for.

Sharon: I knew that. I know you pretty well.

Michael: Mmm. [ Smooches ]

Lauren: Mmm!

Michael: I am so happy that you said yes.

[ Smooches ]

Lauren: Which time?

Michael: All of them.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: Including now.

Lauren: You were quite mysterious on the phone when you asked me to meet you here.

Michael: Ah. Well, mystery solved.

[ Clears throat ] I won in court.

Lauren: The big fraud case you’ve been prosecuting? Oh, I’m so happy for you! Congratulations.

Michael: Hearing you say it out loud makes the victory even sweeter.

Lauren: So, this isn’t any just normal meet-and-greet. This is a celebration.

Michael: If you insist.

Lauren: I do. Andy, will you bring us a bottle of champagne, please? This deserves a toast. I am so happy for you. You are on one heck of a winning streak.

Michael: Yeah, well, there have been a few losses in there along the way.

Lauren: Don’t be so modest. You are the best prosecutor out there. You, my love, are at the pinnacle of your career.

Michael: Hmm. Funny you should say that. Driving over here, I had the same thought in my head.

Lauren: Oh?

Michael: Mm. I’ve climbed the mountain. I’ve reached the apex. And now that I am here…

Lauren: You’re wondering if you can go any higher.

Michael: The opposite, actually. One phrase keeps, uh, going around in my mind. “Quit while you’re ahead.”

Michael: You know, I’ve been so fortunate over the years. I’ve been able to practice every type of law that piqued my interest — civil, corporate, criminal, for both the defense and the prosecution.

Lauren: You are the best district attorney this town has ever seen. It doesn’t get better.

Michael: Precisely. Which makes me think that maybe I should leave on a high note.

Lauren: And do what?

Michael: Smell the proverbial roses. Start researching that mystery novel I’ve always wanted to write.

Lauren: Okay. You know, this is a rare occurrence, but I actually can’t tell if you’re being serious or not.

Michael: Assume that I am.

Lauren: Honey, this is not the first time you’ve talked about walking away after a particularly grueling case. Maybe you just need a break.

Michael: It’s not about needing a break. It’s about taking my life in a different direction. Like, I was walking out of the courthouse today, and I started thinking about everything I’ve accomplished. And it made me very proud, and i felt a very deep sense of contentment. And isn’t that the way everybody wants to feel when they’re ready to retire from their job?

Christine: Retire? I was just picking up a takeout order, and I couldn’t help overhearing. I’m — I’m so sorry.

Michael: It is interesting timing.

Lauren: Yes, very interesting, as you were the one who tossed your D.A. Baton to michael when you decided to step down.

Michael: Join us, unless you’ve got plans.

Christine: Well, I — I don’t see my to-go order ready, but, uh…

Michael: Yeah. Have a drink. Sit. Sit. Sit.

Christine: Okay, yeah, a quick one.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Okay, so, you heard what michael just said. What went through your mind?

Christine: Well, if he’s serious about leaving law or even the D.A.’S office, it would truly be the end of an era in this town.

Michael: Well, nobody, not even my wonderful wife here

[Sighs] Understands that quite as well as you do. I gave christine her first job with a law firm.

Michael: So. How do you feel?

Christine: Do you remember “the wizard of oz”? The yellow brick road, the- beginning of it?

Michael: Yes.

Christine: That’s me.

Michael: Perfect analogy.

Christine: I’m a little nervous. Not nervous. More excited.

Michael: Well, you should be. This is the start of your career. One of the biggest days in your life. Welcome to whitman, walker & wilson, christine.

Christine: Thanks.

Michael: [ Chuckles ]

Christine: You have certainly come a long way since then. A lot of people think dealing with copd

Christine: Law school was just a warm-up compared to what I learned from you. I felt so lucky to be your protégé, observing you in court, listening to you strategize. Your mind was so brilliant. I was literally in awe.

Michael: Until you met the other side of me — the egomaniac who knew he was the smartest person in the room, who thought everyone should be grateful just to sit at the feet of the master and do whatever he asked. That was me, too, back then. I excelled at power plays and mind games. But I underestimated you.

Christine: A little.

Michael: And when I crossed the line, you fought back,& dragged me to court, exposed my abhorrent behavior, and won. And instead of being humbled, i was outraged that I lost my job and my reputation. I was consumed with revenge.

Michael: Just a few more holes and I’ll punch through this wall.

[ Grunts ] Ah, it won’t be long now, christine.

Michael: I wasn’t in my right mind. That’s the only way to describe it. I was obsessed, violent, furious. And though I didn’t know it at the time, winding up in prison, hitting rock bottom were some of the best things that ever happened to me. Spending a few years behind bars gave me a new appreciation for everything I’d just thrown away. And I — I counted the moments until i would be released and could start over again.

Christine: [ Sighs ] You claimed you had this epiphany. I doubted you, to say the least.

Michael: Yeah, well, i couldn’t very well blame you for that. But I knew. I knew if you would give me a second chance, if you would speak on my behalf to the wisconsin bar so I could get my law license back…it would make all the difference.

Christine: Why should I give you the time of day? Let alone help you —

Michael: I understand why you’d feel this way. I do. Just as I hope you understand that this is eating me up inside, not being able to use my training as an attorney. I really believe that’s why god put me on this earth.

Christine: Then you took that god-given talent and did what with it? You used it as a big power trip.

Michael: How many times do i have to say this?

Christine: You’re a changed man, right? The monster who did all those things doesn’t exist.

Michael: Look, you have every reason in the world to be skeptical.

Christine: [ Scoffs ] Well, thank you.

Michael: This just means so much to me. You can help me more than anyone else can, christine. But first you have just — you’ve got to believe me. I swear to you with every fiber of my being, I am changed. I am sincere. I want to practice law again. And if you help me, I promise you I will never, ever forget it.

Michael: I’ve given thanks every day since that you found a way to overcome those doubts. I mean, you — you restored my career. I mean, she even agreed to come work with me again.

Christine: Baldwin, williams and associates.

Michael: We can put your name first if you like.

Christine: No, no, it sounds better this way.

Michael: Well, then let’s put pen to paper.

Christine: That’s where i really came into my own as a lawyer, and you and I became real friends and colleagues.

Lauren: To the chagrin of paul, as I recall.

Michael: Oh. Yeah, well, he did take a little longer to trust that I was on the up-and-up. You know, I can’t blame him. It’s understandable, given our history. And I didn’t always make things easy for you.

Christine: Oh, yeah, you were no saint, to say the least.

Michael: But you were patient and kind. And you cut me an unending amount of slack. And it meant the world. Still does.

Lauren: So, what do you think about this, uh, question du jour?

Christine: [ Chuckles ] Retirement?

Lauren: What do you think about this dilemma? I mean, should he or shouldn’t he go out while he’s on top? Your dry skin story changes

Christine: If you’re asking for my advice, I really can’t give you any. Only michael will know when he’s ready to wind down his legal career and maybe try his hand at something else.

Lauren: Well, he is multitalented. Not many people realize that. He’s clever.

Christine: Hey, you could do stand-up.

Michael: Yeah, no.

Christine: No.

Lauren: You do have this childlike curiosity about the world. It’s a true gift. And last week you were on this conference call, and you were sketching on a legal pad. It was this — this cottage and woods. It was — it was so good.

Michael: I wouldn’t go that far.

Lauren: Well, I would, and this isn’t just the wife bragging about you. You could be an artist. That’s no joke.

Christine: Have you been holding out on us?

Lauren: [ Laughs ] He could probably excel at anything he put his mind to.

Michael: That’s just the point. I haven’t got a clue on what that might be.

Christine: Okay, but you will. You just have to do some more soul-searching. For me, the writing was on the wall. I knew it was time for me to leave the D.A.’S office, but you gave me the perfect opportunity.

Michael: No regrets?

Christine: No, none. I love doing pro bono work. It gives me such satisfaction to help people, and I get to spend more time with my husband.

Lauren: Wait a minute. Are we talking about the work-life balance? Hmm. That just might be a new concept for one of us.

Michael: Unfortunately, that’s true.

Lauren: You thrive on adrenaline, the kind that you get from arguing in front of a jury. Are you going to be happy with this calmer, quieter existence?

Victor: Now, wait a minute.

Michael: [ Chuckles ]

Victor: Calm and quiet and michael baldwin?

Michael: Victor.

Victor: Why don’t those three things go together?

Christine: Right? Good to see you, victor.

Victor: Hello, christine. Nice to see you.

Christine: Nice to see you. I see my to-go order, so I will let lauren and michael explain everything to you. Thank you for the drink, and good luck with your deliberations.

Michael: I’m sure I’ll need it.

Victor: Okay.

Michael: Please, sit. Sit.

Victor: Thank you.

Lauren: Yes.

Victor: What a nice surprise.

Michael: Here we go.

Victor: Thank you, sir.

Lauren: Thank you.

Victor: Well, my god. A glass of champagne?

Lauren: Yes.

Michael: Uh-huh.

Victor: Whoa. So, what deliberations was christine talking about?

Lauren: Michael won a big case in court today.

Michael: Which inspired me to float the idea of retirement.

Victor: What are you talking about?

Michael: All good things must come to an end, and perhaps it’s best to take charge of when and how that happens.

Victor: I understand all that, but retirement?

Michael: Why not?

Victor: Who do you think you’re talking to? You’d be bored out of your skull within three weeks. Trust me.

[ Laughing ] You know that.

Michael: Look…

Victor: What?

Michael: …Give me some credit for wanting to explore life out from behind my desk. I mean, there are plenty of things to fill my time. I can — I can be a more attentive husband. I can play with my niece and nephew, visit fenmore.

Victor: Well, now, listen. I understand you wanting to spend time with your family. I really do, you know? I’ve done the same. But I’ve kept one hand in newman enterprise business.

Michael: Surprising exactly no one.

Victor: Why don’t you follow my example?

Michael: Which is?

Victor: Join newman media. We need your expertise. We need your talent.

Lauren: “We” meaning youand adam?

Victor: Unbeknownst to both of you, adam has matured a great deal. And besides that, you would only be answer to me.

Michael: Well [Sighs] Somehow I don’t see this as the halfway point between being district attorney and kicking back in a lounge chair. I mean, working for you requires that I be on call 24/7 as an attorney and a fixer and, perhaps, wading into some murky waters ethically.

Victor: But you’re so damn good at it.

Michael: [ Sighs ]

Lauren: Hey, now!

Michael: No, wait. Now, hold on. I admit it. I admit it. I found it thrilling to find the perfect loophole and seeing how far I could push things without getting caught. And in that sense, we were a good match back then. But for every occasion that we were in sync, there were other, far less pleasant times.

Michael: You have every right to be disappointed in me. I have let you down terribly. But, victor, I swear to you, nothing like this will ever happen again.

Victor: You’re damn right it won’T. You’re the best damn lawyer i ever had. What the hell were you thinking? It’s going to cost me millions of dollars. Millions of dollars! And I don’t like to lose! You’re fired.

Victor: Well, now, you and i have had a rather tumultuous professional relationship, but, you know… listen. I know you. You have so much energy. Where are you gonna put it? You need to channel it somewhere.

Lauren: I second that.

Victor: Right. And one thing I promise you — you’ll not be bored working for me. You know that.

[ Chuckles ]

Get ready. It’s time for

the savings event of the year.

Michael: While that’s a very flattering offer, this conversation is extremely premature.

Victor: Well, now, why don’t I address your concerns right now? So when you’re ready to consider, you know what the parameters are.

Michael: Alright, I’ll hear you out, but no promises.

Victor: First of all, you will set your own hours. I will no longer dominate your time 24 hours a day.

Michael: Will you put that in writing?

Victor: Oh, yeah. Gladly. And then of course you would be compensated very well, in accordance with your extensive experience and talents.

Michael: Oh, that’s a good thing — because I wouldn’t come cheap. But it’s really not about the money.

Victor: No, it isn’T.

[ Sighs ] You and I have been working together for how many years now? My god. Too many to tell. And we have learned to trust each other, which is the most important thing in business.

Victor: I will not let you take the fall for me.& You got that? You go to christine blair, you tell her you’ll make whatever deal she wants to as long as it gives you the most immunity.

Michael: No, I don’t like this, victor.

Victor: I’m ordering you to do it.

Michael: That’s how igot in trouble in the first place — taking your orders.

Victor: You tell christine blair if she wants me to come to my office.

Michael: Victor, I can handle this. Let me do this for you.

Victor: Michael baldwin, let me explain something to you. All my life I’ve been accused of not taking responsibility for the consequences of my actions, that I’m ruthless and unfeeling. It ain’t so. You will not take the rap for me. I’m responsible for this. This was my idea and my plan, my scheme. I will suffer the consequences, not you. End of story.

Michael: I’ve never respected you more than I did that day.

Victor: I appreciate that. Now, I’ve come what I had to say. And nice to see you, lauren, okay?

Lauren: So great to see you, as always.

Victor: If you need any further information, you know where to reach me, alright?

Michael: Thank you.

Victor: Nice to see you. Bye, lauren.

Michael: [ Laughs ]

Lauren: What is so funny?

Michael: [ Groans ] I haven’t even decided to leave my job, and I’ve already got another one waiting for me.

Lauren: Well, I doubt that would be the only offer. Does that change how you feel about things?

Michael: It complicates things.

Lauren: How so?

Michael: When I first brought up the subject, I only considered two options — district attorney or retired district attorney. But now that I’ve talked to victor and christine…

Lauren: You’ve seen that there’s a lot of other possibilities.

Michael: [ Sighs ] I think I just — I just need to get a handle on what life would be like if I am no longer

[Sighs] Putting genoa city’s criminals behind bars.

Lauren: I couldn’t agree more. So while you and victor had your heads together, I decided I’d better bring in some reinforcements.

[ Laughs ]

Gloria: Oh, thank you, lauren, for reaching out.

Kevin: The gang’s all here!

Chloe: With tons of conflicting opinions to choose from!

Lauren: Oh, yay! Well, I texted your brother, told him what was going on, and this is such a big decision. I thought you needed your family’s support and perspective.

Michael: Have you met my family?

Gloria: Ohh! Now, now!

Michael: Alright, listen, listen, I’m sure your intentions are good, but sound advice just — it doesn’t immediately leap to mind.

Lauren: Not always, but you did say you wanted to look at this from all angles, and what better way to do that with your family, who knows you and loves you best?

Kevin: Yeah.

Michael: [ Shudders ]

[ Laughter ]

“The young and the restless”

will continue. I’ve got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Michael: Ahh, isn’t this a cozy party of five?

Lauren: Well, it would have been six, but your best friend is tied up at work.

Michael: Well, I’m sure phyllis would be on my side, so let’s just assume she’s on team whatever-michael-decides.

Gloria: What’s that supposed to mean? That some of us are not on your side?

Michael: I didn’t mean to offend you, gloria.

Gloria: I hope not. Because personally I think this is wonderful that we’ve all come together on such short notice to offer our insights.

Kevin: Like a regular family, mom. Not like the one we used to be.

Michael: [ Chuckles ]

Chloe: Perish the thought.

Gloria: Who wants to rehash the past, when you and michael couldn’t always depend on me? I mean, who wants to go there, huh? I certainly don’T.

Gloria: You won’t forgive me for being a rotten mother when you were young. You won’t allow me to take care of you now, when I can be the best mother I could ever be. What do you want from me?

Michael: [ Scoffs ] Oh, yeah. You’re all full of maternal love now. One has to wonder when you’ll tell your husband who your children are.

Gloria: Michael —

Michael: You talk about love? Love for your sons, love for this man you can never be honest with. And you claim you deserve —

deserved — to be looked at with new eyes. And you haven’t done anything to deserve it! And the only way that can happen… is no more lies, no more manipulations, just being who and what you are, for better or worse!

Gloria: [ Chuckles ] Okay, okay. It took me a while. But I think you all have to agree that I have grown into my role.

Kevin: As lady macbeth?

[ Laughter ]

Michael: [ Coughs ]

Gloria: As your fabulous, if unconventional, maternal figure to both of my sons.

Lauren: Did fen send us some mutant fruit basket or something?

Michael: Scott sent us the world’s largest ham.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Well, come on. Let’s open it up.

Michael: That’s why I have scissors.

Lauren: Well, wait, wait, wait, careful! I mean, what if it is fruit?

Gloria: Whoo!

Lauren: [ Screams ]

Gloria: [ Laughs ] Deck the halls, everybody. Gloria’s back. Oh, come on! Get me out of this thing! Come! Come, come, come!

[ Squeals, laughs ]

Michael: Uh, gloria, this — this — this…

Lauren: Quite a surprise.

Gloria: Of course! Well, I couldn’t leave my handsome sons alone on christmas. You and kevin are my life. Nowhere else I’d rather be.

[ Laughter ]

Michael: Well, your efforts have been appreciated.

Gloria: [ Laughs ] I would hope so.

[ Laughter ] Well, I have no right to throw stones, given the epic mistakes I’ve made in the past.

[ Groans ] None more egregious than failing you as an older brother when we were younger.

Kevin: [ Sighs ] You have more than made up for that.

Michael: I haven’t been a brother to you, not like i should have been. I was too wrapped up in my own stuff, you know… getting out of the hellhole we grew up in. And I, uh, left you behind. I will never forgive myself for the rest of my life. All I can say is, uh… I’m going to try to do better. No. [ Scoffs ] I am going to do better. That is a promise.

Kevin: [ Inhales sharply ] Hey. You know what? This is about the future, right? Or at least it’s supposed to be, so let’s all focus on some positivity, okay?

Chloe: Yeah.

Kevin: This man right here has stepped up for each and every one of us time and time again. And we are more than happy to be here supporting you.

Kevin: So then you leave, right? And I wondered if we’d ever really be brothers again. Um, and — and I — I doubted it, you know? But I think there was this one part of me that never stopped believing. So, uh — [ Chuckles ] So, now look at us, you know? Everything that I hoped for when I looked at that picture is coming true. You know, we’re happy and we’re together and, uh… and I’m gonna stand up for you, you know, on the most important day of your life, mikey. And I’m really proud of you.

Lauren: You know, this reminiscing has been lovely. But I called you here because michael is at a crossroads.

Michael: To retire or not to retire?

Kevin: I think the answer’s clear.

Chloe: I mean, it’s pretty obvious.

Kevin: Mm-hmm. Don’t do it!

Chloe: Get out now!

Lauren: Uh…

[ Laughing ] What?

Chloe: Don’t listen to him.

If you have postmenopausal

osteoporosis

Michael: Feel free to elaborate.

Chloe: The very fact that you are trying to decide if you should retire says it all. You’re ready.

Michael: Oh, you think so, huh?

Chloe: You are the best of the best at what you do. There’s nothing left to prove — to anyone. And I think it’s time for you to kick back and relax. Do the things that you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’T. You deserve it.

Michael: I have to say that sounds appealing.

Kevin: Totally. Except the kicking back and relaxing part — not gonna happen.

Chloe: [ Scoffs ]

Kevin: And I personally dread the idea of michael with too much time on his hands.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Kevin: How are you gonna fill your endless days once the novelty of all that time and freedom wears off? You gonna play more squash?

[ Laughter ] Watch tv? Make little paperweights out of old golf balls?

Gloria: [ Laughs ]

Michael: That sounded pretty great till that last one.

[ Laughter ]

Kevin: Michael! Come on. Get real. With all that extra time on your hands, you are going to drive the rest of us crazy. He’s gonna come over, constantly offering advice about what we’re doing, what we should be doing.

Michael: I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration, right?

Lauren: Well, yes and…

Chloe: [ Laughs ]

Gloria: I think your brother is spot on. You will get on everybody’s nerves. And, mikey, you’ve never been big on hobbies.

[ Laughter ] If you retire — and that is a very big “if” because we all know that I am much too young to be the mother of a retiree — so you will have to find something to fill the void. If you don’t want to be a D.A. Any longer, fine. But you’re gonna have to get some kind of job.

Kevin: Why not? There’s no rule saying you have to practice law the rest of your life.

Chloe: Okay, enough. Enough already. Michael is smart, and I think he gets the gist. There’s no wrong way you can go.

Kevin: I just think if you…

Gloria: I know, but if you ask me —

Chloe: Stop it! Stop! Stop it. Enough already, okay? You have given your thoughts, and now michael will do with them what he will. And it is his life. And we support him no matter what he decides. Right?

Gloria: Of course.

Kevin: Right.

Lauren: Okay. Well, that’s that then.

Gloria: Okay, so, why don’t we leave so lauren and michael can contemplate further on their own.

Michael: Look, everyone, thank you. Thank you for coming, and i mean that. Mwah! Mmm! Ah, my favorite.

[ Laughter ]

Chloe: Thanks for the drink.

Michael: You are most welcome.

Kevin: Let us know what you decide.

Michael: Ah, you’ll be one of the first. Love you. Mwah!

Kevin: Love you. Bye.

Lauren: Bye.

Michael: Thank you, brother.

Lauren: Well…

Michael: [ Chuckles ]

Lauren: …That was fun.

Michael: Oh, it was very enlightening.

Lauren: Oh. You think so?

Michael: Mm-hmm. I’m glad you brought them into the mix. That little confab helped me gain some clarity.

Lauren: Really? ‘Cause I sort of thought that —

Michael: Oh, that we were back to square one? No. No, no, no, no, no. They made me realize that i don’t need or want anyone else’s advice but yours.

Lauren: Aww.

Michael: It’s the only opinion that really matters. And we may be discussing my career, but it’s our future we’re talking about. The next weigh station on that journey that began with… oh, my gosh, I haven’t thought of this in a long time.

Lauren: What?

Michael: Our first kiss.

[ Both laugh ] Remember?

Lauren: YeaH. I do.

Lauren: I’m not sure we’re in the same place.

[ Soft jazz music playing ]

Michael: It sure feels like it to me.

Lauren: Oh, I have to think about paul, and then there’s kevin to consider and —

Michael: Mnh-mnh, no, no, no. You know, thinking is highly overrated.

Lauren: Michael…

Michael: Mnh-mnh.

Michael: When we said “I do,” we didn’t mean sometimes, we didn’t mean when it was convenient. We meant forever and always.

Michael: I promise to spend the rest of my days trying to be the man that I see in your eyes when you look at me. So I’m asking you, lauren fenmore, in front of all these people… walk through life with me. Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be. The last of life, for which the first was made.

Michael: [ Chuckles ] I still don’t know what I did to deserve you.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Michael: But you get me in a way no one else does.

Lauren: That’s because you don’t hold anything back.

Michael: Being a lawyer is a huge part of my identity. But…the best part of me is what I have with you.

Michael: They have to have some really good, uh, manuals on being a father because this kid is gonna have to be all about nurture and not nature.

Lauren: Okay, don’t you be scared by this. You are not the man that you were.

Michael: I’m not the man i was five minutes ago. You’re pregnant.

Lauren: So…boy? Girl? What do you think?

Michael: As long — as long as it’s not some little green alien, I’m happy.

Lauren: Are you happy?

Michael: Yeah, I’m happy. I’m — I’m s– scared. Overwhelmed. [ Chuckles ]

Lauren: You did say happy, right?

Michael: Yeah. I love you so much. And, look, I’m gonna — I’m gonna do my damndest to be the very best father this baby could —

[ Laughs ] We’re gonna have a baby.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: We’re gonna have a baby. We’re gonna be parents.

Lauren: I know! I know. So, papa…

Michael: [ Smooches ]

Lauren: …Come to mama.

[ Both laugh ]

Michael: My greatest legacy will be our family.

Lauren: I’m grateful every day for the strong marriage that we’ve built.

Michael: I think we’re stronger now than we’ve ever been because of the challenges we’ve faced and overcome.

Lauren: That’s a really nice way of saying it that way. I almost destroyed what we built, and, um…it’s really a miracle that we made it through.

Michael: It took a lot of hard work. But we made it… because you and I were meant to be…as husband and wife and mother and father.

Lauren: Oh.

Michael: It’s a compass?

Lauren: It’s beautiful.

Fen: I guess it’s kind of a symbol, um… this whole road and journey of mine has been so difficult, but you guys have been there every step of the way, guiding me and loving me without ever judging or even saying, like, a — a harsh word. And, um…I-I just — I can’t thank you guys enough. You saved my life.

Lauren: I feel like we’re at a place where, no matter what happens, we’re gonna be okay. And you, my love — you’re going to be okay no matter what path you choose.

Our hillshire farm craftsman

Michael: I’m ready.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: Bring it.

Lauren: Uh…

Michael: Tell me what i should do with the rest of my life.

Lauren: I think you should choose the path that makes you the happiest. I know. I know. You wanted something far more direct from me, but that’s all you’re gonna get.

Michael: And that’s okay. Because I’ve already made up my mind.

Lauren: You have?

Michael: It’s clear that i need to retire because having more time to spend with you

[Sighs] Is what will make me the happiest.

Lauren: You are just the sweetest man ever.

Michael: I speak only the truth.

Lauren: Are you sure?

Michael: I’m positive.

[ Romantic music plays ]

Michael: Mm-hmm.

Lauren: Uh-huh.

Michael: So, this is what you want.

Lauren: That’s right.

Michael: You just want me cheap and easy and dirty.

Lauren: So cheap.

Michael: Oh, yeah?

Lauren: Yeah.

Michael: Like a piece of meat.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Lauren: From this moment on, we are living happily ever after.

Michael: I have never loved you any more than I do right now.

Lauren: I love you, too. Let’s get this party started.

Michael: But I’m tellin’ ya, that’s gonna be itchy in there, so…

Lauren: That’s alright. I’ll do the scratchin’.

Michael: You know, I can’t believe this.

Lauren: Come on. Come on.

Michael: Aah!

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: [ Growls ] Come here! Ahh!

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Lauren: I love you so much. We’ve had such a great adventure, haven’t we?

Michael: [ Chuckles ] And we’ve only just started.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Ooh! [ Laughs ]

Recap written by Christine

Sharon and her kids had a surprise party for Nick at Crimson Lights. Faith, Noah, Mariah, Tessa and Moses were there, and Nick felt touched. Sharon said Rey had to work, but he’d said the next round of beers were on him. Nick said his kids were obligated to be here, but Moses and Tessa chose to attend, and that meant a lot to him. Moses said Devon was passing on his best wishes, along with some light ribbing. Nick said this wasn’t a roast, but Faith and her siblings all said they wanted a roast. Nick was good natured about it, but he headed to the door, saying he just remembered he had a root canal appointment. Mariah told Nick to have a seat, and they put a crown on his head. Nick called Monique, the nanny, and told her he’d be home late. Nick told Sharon that Christian still thought he could do no wrong. Sharon said that while Nick was in Milan, all Christian talked about was how great his dad was.

Nick saw Mariah, Faith and Noah conspiring. He asked Tessa and Moses if he had anything to worry about. Tessa and Moses recommended being afraid. Faith told Nick not to stress because they all loved him and thought he was the best dad in the world, not that he couldn’t be overprotective. Faith brought up Danny Obermeyer. Moses asked if that was an ex boyfriend. Faith said that he was a second grader who tripped her during a soccer game, and Nick gave him the Newman death glare. Mariah suggested Nick give Moses a taste, just in case he ever stepped out of bounds, but Nick said it wouldn’t be necessary. Tessa wanted to see it, so Nick glared, and Moses and Tessa thought it was terrifying. Nick also once chased down a teen who stole Noah’s Halloween candy and made him apologize. Faith thought they were lucky to have Nick looking out for them. Nick and Faith hugged.

Next, it was Mariah’s turn and she wanted to dive into Nick’s love life. Nick said he didn’t have one. Mariah said that wouldn’t last long, since Nick was a hopeless romantic. Tessa thought Mariah was too. Mariah said she was a hardened cynic until recently, and given Noah’s current attitude, she guessed it ran in the family. She thought she and Noah should screen Nick’s future dates. Nick said he wouldn’t be dating for awhile, and everyone scoffed. Mariah said there was nothing wrong with being in love with being in love. Mariah thought Nick had a big heart, and that was why he was able to accept Cassie and Mariah into his family. Mariah and Nick hugged. Noah was glad to be in town to watch his dad grow old. Noah said Nick was always at his games growing up, and he’d been with Noah every step of the way even when Noah’s interests diverged from his. Noah knew that Nick was supportive of Summer’s entry into the fashion world too. Faith added that Nick started listening to Tigirlily because she liked them. Nick liked their music. Faith knew, because she heard him singing in the shower. Noah said Nick was proof no dad could be too involved in his children’s lives. Nick asked if Noah would accept his job offer.

Everyone except Nick and Sharon broke away to get the cake. Sharon wanted to hear about the job offer. Nick wanted to expand New Hope, and he wanted Noah to help him run it. Nick knew it’d be a big shift going from art installations to New Hope, but he thought Noah was looking for meaning in life, and New Hope would provide that, just as it had for Nick. Nick knew Adam offered Noah a job that Sharon pushed him to accept. Sharon said that she didn’t push Noah, she just asked him not to rule it out because it came from Adam. She wanted their son to do what was best, and selfishly, whatever kept him in town. Nick wanted Noah to stay too.

Noah asked Tessa about the baby plans, and she said they were looking into adoption. Noah said that would be a lucky kid, or kids, and he congratulated Tessa. Tessa wanted to stick with one child for now. She thought it was nice having Noah back, since she liked having a friend so close by. Mariah brought the cake out from the back and they all sang happy birthday. Nick got teased about being old because there were so many candles on his cake.

Nick got court side tickets to the Bucks from Mariah and Tessa. Tessa, the rock star, had pulled a few strings to get the impossible-to-find tickets. Noah got Nick a personalized bottle of wine. He’d designed a label that honored The Underground. Moses bought Nick an album. Nick and Sharon winced when Moses called the 1990s record retro. Faith made a photo album for Nick, filled with pictures of the both of them and a book of Dad jokes. Sharon gave Nick a basket of his favorite muffins. She said that Christian helped her pick out the last gift. It was an old shirt that Sharon found in a vintage shop that was just like one Nick used to own. Nick loved that shirt, and he’d been crushed when he lost it. She said that when she found the shirt, it brought back memories for her, and she thought it might for him too. He was excited to get it and all his other gifts. He thanked everyone for a special night. They danced, then Mariah read jokes from the book.

Nick pulled Noah aside and asked about the job. Noah was impressed with New Hope, but he already took the job at Newman Media, and he didn’t think Victor and Adam would appreciate it if he backed out. Nick thought that they’d understand, and he also believed Victor, who was a proponent of father/son bonding, would be especially understanding. Noah wasn’t saying no, but he needed some time to consider the offer. Across the room, Faith exclaimed about Mariah and Tessa having a baby. Noah looked sullen. Mariah said they were early in the adoption process, and it’d probably be a long while off. Mariah was sorry that her news slipped out, since this day was about Nick. Nick said not to apologize – he thought it was the best news ever that their family was expanding. Faith and Moses offered to babysit. Moses had a lot of experience with Dominic. Faith noticed Sharon wasn’t surprised. Sharon said she’d only known for a short time, and it wasn’t her secret to tell, but she was very happy for Mariah and Tessa.

Faith asked Moses what he told his mom about her when he went home for the holidays. Before he could answer, Sharon came up with a bag of food for him to take home to Amanda and Devon. Moses and Faith left.

Mariah asked Nick how Summer was enjoying married life and parenthood. Nick said she was great, and Harrison had stolen her heart. Tessa talked about how much paperwork adoption required. Noah started to quietly leave, and Sharon went over and said bye. Sharon looked at Mariah, Tessa and Nick, who were laughing and talking about the adoption, then she looked at the somber Noah.

Later, Sharon and Nick were alone, and they talked about their kids. They thought Faith and Moses were cute, and Nick was happy to see Mariah and Tessa doing well. Sharon had been a little worried to hear about the adoption plans at first, because Mariah had been so fragile, and there were all these stories about people getting their hopes dashed when they tried adoption, but Sharon noticed that Mariah was getting stronger every day. Sharon said Mariah barely reacted when Moses brought up Dominic. Nick noticed, and he saw that Sharon was paying close attention as well. He said they’d never be done parenting. She was worried about Noah, but she thought Nick was right about Noah needing a new direction. Sharon noticed Nick was at peace. He said he realized he had everything he needed to be happy, and his family was his touchstone. He thanked her for putting this evening together. He thought they’d created something special with their kids, and she said it was only getting stronger.

Devon and Amanda watched a movie, and she turned it off because he wasn’t paying attention. He was thinking that he’d been neglecting Hamilton-Winters. Amanda didn’t think that was true – she thought that he’d been understandably focused on Dominic. Devon said he couldn’t let the company he built with Neil fall apart.

Devon had a nightmare that Dominic was crying and lost. “Daddy’s coming!,” an alarmed Devon said. Amanda shook Devon awake, and he told her about the dream. “[Dominic] needed me and I wasn’t there for him,” Devon said. Amanda thought Devon had that dream because he couldn’t count on his mom when he was little. She knew how it felt because it was her story too. She was sure Devon probably promised himself that his child would never be alone or afraid. Devon said, according to the world, he didn’t have a child. Amanda knew Devon’s heart said otherwise. Amanda said Devon was a loving person, so of course he wanted to protect the baby. Devon theorized that he couldn’t find Dominic in the dream because Dominic wasn’t his child to protect.

Amanda asked if Devon wanted to step back from Dominic. He wasn’t sure what to do. Sometimes he felt like he was doing the right thing for Dominic, then other times, he felt like he was just doing what was best for himself. He had a natural instinct to look after Dominic. He knew Chance needed time to get his head right, but Devon didn’t just want to fill in until Chance was ready. Devon wanted to be there all the time for the rest of his life. He wasn’t sure that was selfish. Amanda knew she had her own issues, but she was adamant that it wasn’t selfish to want to love and protect Dominic. She felt that every child deserved that. She wouldn’t let him feel like there was something wrong with wanting to love the baby. Devon was too tired to make any decisions tonight. He though the dream was about the fear that all parents had, and he wasn’t going to make any life changes based on a dream. She said she’d be there if he wanted to talk or sleep. She went upstairs. He looked at a photo of Neil, then he followed her upstairs.

Chance came downstairs after reading Dominic a bedtime story. Abby was in the living room smiling. She’d been watching on the monitor, and she thought Chance and Dominic were cute. Chance felt like she was checking up on him. Abby said it wasn’t like that, but he said it was fine, and he walked away. When he returned, she said she didn’t want him to feel like she didn’t think he was capable of reading their son a story. He didn’t feel like he was doing enough to be a good father. Abby knew that feeling – she couldn’t carry their son or protect him and Mariah, or even nurse their son. Chance said that Abby did everything she could. She said that it ached though. She’d learned that parenting was a journey with no endpoint and there was no one right way to do things. “Your way is the right way because you love him,” Abby said. He thought she must be worn out looking after him and her son. She said he and Dominic were the greatest gifts of her life. He didn’t think she should have to deal with his problems, but she said he had to deal with hers, and marriage was about being a team. She suggested a bubble bath for two, and he took a rain check, so she went upstairs to shower.

Chance stared off into space and remembered the explosion. When he came back to the present, he heard Dominic crying over the monitor and Abby talking to him. Dominic had clearly been crying for some time, because Abby told him that she didn’t hear him because she was in the shower. She told Dominic that Chance must’ve fallen asleep, and that was why he didn’t come to the room.

Abby came downstairs and asked Chance if he fell asleep. He pretended he had dozed off. She said she helped Dom get back to sleep. She asked if he was coming upstairs, and he asked if they could sit here for a second, so she laid down on the couch with him. He looked at the monitor, then he adopted a thousand yard stare. She asked if he wanted to go check on the baby before they went to bed. He said he’d love to. She went upstairs. He paused at the staircase for a bit, then he followed her.

Recap written by Christine

Michael had Lauren meet him at Society. When he arrived, he gave her a kiss and told her he won in court today. She ordered champagne to celebrate, and she told him that he was at the pinnacle of his career. He’d been thinking the same thing, and it made him wonder if he should quit while he was ahead. He’d felt fortunate to practice every type of law that piqued his interests, and he thought maybe he should leave on a high note. Lauren noted that this wasn’t the first time Michael talked about leaving after a brutal case. She suggested a break, but he said it was about taking his life in a different direction. He felt proud and content, and that was how everyone wanted to feel when they were ready to retire.

Christine was getting takeout, and she overheard Michael, so she joined him and Lauren. Christine thought that if Michael left the profession, it’d be the end of an era in this town. Michael said no one understood that as well as Christine did. He told Lauren that he gave Christine her first job at the law firm. There was a flashback to a young Michael and Christine. He’d welcomed her to Whitman Walker and Wilson. In the present, Christine said she felt lucky to be Michael’s protege. He assumed her opinion changed when she saw the other side of him – the egomaniac. Michael admitted that he excelled at mind games and power plays back then. He said he underestimated her, and when he crossed the line with her, she fought back, dragged him to court, exposed his abhorrent behavior and won. He acknowledged that, instead of being humbled, he was outraged about losing his job and reputation and he sought revenge. A clip played of Michael using a sledgehammer to put a hole in a wall as part of his plot to make Christine suffer. Michael said he wasn’t in his right mind back then – he’d been obsessed, violent, furious, and though he didn’t know it at the time, going to prison for a few years was one of the best things to ever happen to him. Christine had been skeptical when Michael came to her and said he had an epiphany. Michael had asked Christine to give him another chance and speak on his behalf to the Wisconsin Bar.

Michael was grateful Christine restored his career and agreed to come work with him again. They remembered when they had a law office together, Baldwin, Williams and Associates. Christine said she came into her own as a lawyer, and she and Michael became friends and colleagues. Lauren recalled that Paul was chagrined. Michael noted that Paul took a little longer to trust him again, which was understandable. Michael said Christine was patient and kind and cut him an unending amount of slack. Lauren asked what Christine thought about Michael retiring. Christine said only Michael would know when he was ready to wind down his legal career. Lauren thought Michael was multi-talented. She’d seen his sketches, she thought he could be an artist. He wasn’t sure what he might want to do, and Christine said he just had to do more soul searching. Christine didn’t regret leaving the DA’s office, she loved pro bono work, and it gave her more time with her husband.

Victor arrived, and Christine hugged him before taking her order and leaving. Michael brought Victor up to speed. Victor thought that Michael would get too bored to retire. Michael said he could spend more time with Lauren, Fen, and Kevin’s kids. Victor invited Michael to come work for him at Newman Media. Michael wasn’t really interested in being on call 24/7 or ending up in murky ethical situations. Victor noted that Michael was really good at it. Michael admitted he’d once loved finding the perfect loop holes and seeing how far he could push things without getting caught, but for every time he and Victor were in sync, there were other, far less pleasant times. There was a flashback to Victor firing Michael.

In the present, Victor said Michael could set his own hours and he’d be compensated very well. Michael said it wasn’t really about the money. Victor said he and Michael had a long history, and they’d learned to trust each other. There was a flashback to Michael trying to take the fall for something Victor did. Victor insisted on taking responsibility for his own actions. After the flashback ended, Michael said he’d never respected Victor more than he did that day. Victor left. Michael chuckled that he hadn’t left his job, and there was already another one waiting for him. Michael just needed to get a handle on his options. Lauren had made some calls to help Michael out.

Gloria, Kevin and Chloe arrived. Lauren thought Michael’s family could help him get perspective. “Have you met my family?,” he asked her. Lauren said Michael wanted to look at this from all angles, and what better way than to do that with the family who knew and loved him best. Lauren had invited Michael’s best friend, but she couldn’t make it. Michael was sure that Phyllis would be on his side. Gloria asked if that meant some people weren’t on his side. Michael didn’t mean to offend Gloria. Gloria thought it was wonderful that they’d come together. Kevin said they were a regular family now. Gloria didn’t want to rehash the past, when her kids couldn’t depend on her.

Michael flashed back to a moment with Gloria. She said he wouldn’t forgive her for being a rotten mother when he was young. Michael had pointed out that Gloria wasn’t telling her husband that Michael and Kevin were her sons. Michael blasted Gloria for her lies and manipulations. In the present, Gloria was in tears. She admitted it took her awhile, but she thought they had to agree that she’d grown into her role as a fabulous, if unconventional maternal figure. They remembered the time Gloria burst out of a box wrapped as a Christmas present and surprised Michael and Lauren. After the flashback, Michael said he couldn’t throw stones, because he’d made his mistakes. None more egregious than failing Kevin when they were young. Kevin said Michael made up for that. Michael remembered the time Kevin was in the hospital, bandaged and bruised. Michael apologized for not being a good brother. Michael had been focused on getting out of the hellhole they grew up in, and he’d left Kevin behind. Michael vowed to do better.

Kevin wanted to focus on some positivity. Kevin and Michael remembered connecting as brothers in the past. Kevin was going to be Michael’s best man. Lauren thought the reminiscing was lovely, but she said she called them here because Michael was at a crossroads. Chloe thought Michael should retire, and Kevin didn’t. Chloe said Michael was the best of the best, and now it was time to kick back and relax. Kevin thought Michael would be bored and that he’d drive the rest of the family crazy by popping over with unsolicited advice. Gloria agreed with Kevin. Gloria said she was much too young to be the mother of a retiree, so Michael would have to get some kind of job. Chloe said that it was Michael’s life, so they supported him no matter what he decided. Kevin, Chloe and Gloria left. Michael realized he didn’t need anyone’s opinion but Lauren’s. They took a trip down memory lane. There were flashbacks to their first kiss, their wedding and finding out Lauren was pregnant with Fenmore. Michael had been afraid of that his child would inherit his darkness. Lauren assured him that he wasn’t the man he once was. Michael was happy too. He loved Lauren and promised to do his best to be a great father.

Michael told Lauren that she was the best part of his life and that their family was his greatest legacy. She was grateful every day for their strong marriage. He thought they were stronger because of the challenges. She said she almost destroyed what they built, and it was miracle they made it through. He kissed her hand and said it took a lot of hard work, but they made it because they were meant to be as husband and wife and mother and father. They flashed back to Fen giving them a compass to thank them for their loving support and guidance.

Lauren felt that she and Michael were at a place where they’d be okay no matter what. She also thought Michael would be okay no matter what path he chose. He asked what he should do with the rest of his life. She knew he wanted something direct, but she thought he should do what made him happy. He thought it was clear that he needed to retire because spending more time with her would make him the happiest. Music played, and they danced. There were more flashbacks to their romance.

Recap written by Christine

Chance dozed on his couch while Dominic played in the bassinet. Chance had a nightmare and woke up yelling, which scared Dominic and made him cry. Abby ran in and picked up the baby then asked what happened. Chance explained about the dream, but he claimed he didn’t remember what it was about. He just felt bad he scared Dominic. She said the baby was fine, just tired. She put him back in his basket. Chance thought Abby was great with the baby. Abby thought Chance was too and that he just didn’t know it yet. She was worried about the nightmares though. She said he tossed and turned all night and woke up screaming sometimes. She suggested therapy, but he said it wasn’t necessary. He thought that being here with her and Dom would get him through this. He said it’d take time for him to adjust, and he told her not to worry about him. He called her hot, and she thought he was trying to distract her. He said if he wanted to do that, he’d kiss her, then he did. He had some errands to run, but since the baby was asleep, Abby suggested they take advantage of this time. They went upstairs. Later, Chance came down and looked at Dominic, who was awake in the bassinet. Chance left the house.

Devon read a legal document that Amanda prepared for him. Seemingly overwhelmed, he said it felt different seeing it laid out like this. She asked if he still wanted to move forward. He wanted to have a bigger role in Dominic’s life, and he thought having legal rights was the best way to go about it. Amanda agreed. Devon loved Dom and wanted to do what was right by him. He knew Chance needed time to recover. Devon didn’t think Chance was ready to be a parent. Devon just wanted to help, and he wished it didn’t have to come to this. He never wanted to have to be forced to attack Chance and Abby’s parenting skills. Amanda said that Devon would have to make the argument that Chance was incapable of giving Dominic the love and support he needed. She warned him that it would be painful. She was ready to fight to get him the relationship Dominic deserved, but she said this wasn’t about her. Amanda said custody battles were brutal, and if Devon was going to do this, he had to be ready to do what it took to win.

Devon wanted to do this with as little insult as possible. Amanda said they could do that. Devon didn’t want this to be an attack. Amanda warned Devon that might not be possible. She wasn’t sure he and Abby would be close after this. Devon understood that. He hoped that if Abby and Chance saw the lengths he was willing to go, they might settle. Amanda said it was equally possible that Chance and Abby would be so hurt that they’d instruct their lawyers to go into battle. Devon only wanted him, Chance and Abby to be on the same page when it came to Dom. Amanda said that if Devon lost, Abby and Chance might not let him see Dominic anymore. Devon said there was no way Abby would do that. Amanda didn’t think Devon would lose. There had been some specific cases, similar to Devon’s, where donors were awarded rights. She said he’d been a constant presence in Dom’s life.

Devon said he had to do right by Dominic. He hoped things didn’t get ugly in court. He wanted to handle things civilly, and if things didn’t work out that way, he still wanted to move forward. Amanda wanted Devon to take a step back and let her and Abby and Chance’s lawyers handle this from here on out. Devon didn’t agree. He thought that he needed to go to Abby and tell her about this.

Rey and Sharon flirted at Crimson Lights, and she kissed him. Rey was about to tell Sharon about a proposal when Mariah and Tessa walked in, and Sharon focused her attention on them. Sharon thought Mariah and Tessa looked ridiculously happy. Tessa said they’d had a lot of excitement, but she wished they could pace it out a little. Mariah said they missed Rey at the party. Rey wished he could’ve been there. The ladies started laughing about Nick and the party, and Rey looked a bit left out. Rey said he’d be sure to be at the next big celebration, for Nick or anyone else.

Mariah and Tessa were going to Fenmore’s, then to Chance and Abby’s. They had a surprise planned. After they left, Sharon told Rey he had her full attention, but yet again, there was an interruption, this time in Chance’s arrival. Sharon went to get Chance’s order while he talked with Rey. Rey looked forward to his partner coming back to the force. Chance said he was taking an indefinite leave. He missed the beginning of Dominic’s life, and Abby and Devon spent more time with Dom than Chance did. Rey thought the important thing was that Chance was here now, and it wouldn’t be long before Dominic knew how lucky he was to have Chance as a father.

Sharon and Rey were alone again, and she promised nothing else would stop their conversation. He wanted to talk about spending more time alone with her. He wanted to wine and dine her. She thought that sounded nice. He suggested they go to dinner and the museum, and he wanted to go right now. She agreed, but she had to wrap up some things in the office first. She said he was the best.

Mariah and Tessa went to Abby’s house with gifts. One year ago today, Abby and Chance asked Mariah to be the surrogate. Abby thought she should be giving the gifts for this, but she opened the package, and inside were outfits for Dominic. Abby wondered why Mariah and Tessa seemed extra happy. Mariah said they decided to adopt a child. Abby was thrilled, and she was especially pleased for Mariah, because she seemed back to her old self. Mariah said this was the happiest she’d been in a long time. Mariah thanked Abby for being so understanding and supportive. They shared a group hug. Mariah thought it’d be bliss from here on out. Abby asked if Mariah had spoken to Devon recently.

Abby explained that Devon wanted more time with Dominic. This was a critical time, Abby said, because Chance was back, and they were trying to figure out how to be a family. Mariah understood. Abby hadn’t heard from Devon since she told him that she and Chance wouldn’t agree to change the arrangement. She wondered if he needed some space. Mariah guessed she could try reaching out to Devon, since he was such a good friend when she was struggling. Abby didn’t want Mariah to feel pressured into doing it.

After Mariah and Tessa left, Amanda and Devon went to Abby’s. Devon was sorry to just show up, but Abby said that Devon was welcome any time. Devon asked if Chance was here, and Abby asked if she should call him. Devon said it wasn’t necessary. Devon wanted to talk about Dominic. Abby wanted to put this conversation off until her husband was home. Devon reiterated that it wasn’t necessary, but Abby didn’t agree. She noted that he had Amanda, his girlfriend and lawyer. Devon relented.

Mariah and Tessa went to Society. Mariah was worried about Devon and Abby. She loved them both so much. Tessa said Devon and Abby would figure it out. Mariah couldn’t ignore the irony. She’d taken a healthy step back from Dominic, and Devon was holding on tighter. Tessa felt so bad for Devon, Abby and Chance. Mariah said this situation was more complicated than anyone expected. She thought she wanted to reach out to Devon.

Adam and Chelsea went to Society. She thought he wanted to open up about what Victor did, but he said there was no point in dwelling on it. The thought of packing up the penthouse was overwhelming to her. He knew she had something else to discuss besides the house. She admitted she did want to say something. He suspected she wanted to talk about getting back together, and he made it clear there was no future between them. Chelsea said she lost Adam more than once, and he came back and promised they could rebuild what they had. Now she wanted to make those promises to him. He said that their relationship always fell apart in the past. She knew it was hard to put your heart in the hand of the person you needed the most, because that was the person who could break your heart. She was adamant that it was worth the risk. She believed they could have a deep love again. She took his hand and said they should try again.

Adam recognized that Chelsea had given this a lot of thought. She knew he looked at things systemically, but not everything in the universe was logical. “Some things just feel right,” she said. “We are not one of those things,” he countered. He knew with every fiber of his being that a reunion would be a terrible mistake. He said he drove her to put a man in the hospital – she could’ve killed Rey. Chelsea reminded Adam that she wasn’t in her right mind because of her brain injury. He pointed out that he was responsible for the brain injury. He asked her to think about how toxic their love was to drive her to that point. She tried to argue her position, and he asked her to stop. He wanted to be gentle, and he didn’t want to hurt her, but he said that if she couldn’t let this go, he didn’t think they could continue to work together. He didn’t want to let her go from Newman Media, but if their proximity was a problem, he wouldn’t hesitate to do so. She thought that was cold, but he felt that this was the most compassionate and caring thing he could do for her. He wanted her to have a rich full life and be the best mother she could be, but she had to let go of the idea that they would get back together.

Chance and Chelsea bumped into each other at Crimson Lights on the patio. She heard about Spain, and he’d heard about her situation. He was surprised she was back in Genoa City. She said she didn’t have much choice, since she needed to be with Connor, and Adam wouldn’t let her take him far. Chance said Chelsea could’ve fought. Chelsea said Adam was an amazing father, and she didn’t want to keep him from Connor. They started chatting about Adam, and she shared her disappointment that they weren’t getting back together. Chance thought Chelsea knew that Adam was complicated. Chelsea grumbled that she didn’t know Adam as well as Sharon did. Chelsea apologized for bringing the mood down. She thought they should be rejoicing because Chance was alive. She asked to see a picture of Dominic, and he pulled out his phone, only to realize he didn’t have any pictures of his son. Chelsea brushed it off, saying Chance hadn’t been home for long.

Chelsea said that the first six months to a year were hard on everyone, but it got easier once the kid learned to talk. Chance noted that Chelsea really loved being a parent. Chelsea realized she never ordered her coffee. Adam showed up, and Chelsea said bye to Chance and went inside. Chance told Adam that Chelsea didn’t say much, but Chance got the gist of what was going on with Adam. Adam was sorry Chelsea was hurting, but he hoped they could move on and put the past behind them.

Rey offered to pour Chelsea a coffee. She asked him to make it to go, because she had to get out of here. He asked if she was okay, and she said she was fine. He noticed Adam outside.

Abby texted Chance to come home, so he wrapped up his conversation. Chance told Adam that life was short and unpredictable, and Chelsea and Adam had been through hell and back, plus they were connected through Connor. Chance asked if Adam had any of that old love left for her. They didn’t notice Chelsea standing by the patio door. Adam said he didn’t have any love left. Chelsea rushed out of the building.

Adam went to his office and poured a drink.

Chelsea went home. She had tears in her eyes, due to what she’d just overheard. She also poured a drink for herself. She swallowed the alcohol, then she hurled the glass at the wall.

Chance got home and asked what was going on. Devon said this wasn’t going to be easy to hear, but he hoped they’d understand his position. Devon had given a lot of thought to what Chance shared with him the last time they spoke. Devon didn’t want to take this next step, but he was doing what he though was right for Dominic and for Devon. Devon was taking legal action to get shared custody. Amanda was going to contact Christine and file the necessary paperwork. “How could you do this to us?,” Abby demanded.

Recap written by Christine

Outside Society, Sally tried to convince Adam to come to NY with her. She promised it’d be fun. He was tempted, but there was a lot going on at work right now. She said NYC was the media capital of the world, so half the people he had to meet with were probably based there, and the other half had phones. She said they could paint the town after work. She used to live in New York City, so she could show him around. Chelsea came out and said Sally must be freezing, since she was a California girl. Sally told Adam they could discuss it later. Adam had an answer now – he appreciated the offer, but the timing wasn’t great. Sally gave Adam his jacket, and he left. Chelsea wanted to know what Sally offered Adam. Sally tried to go inside. Chelsea wanted to know why Sally wouldn’t be up front with her. Chelsea wanted to believe Sally was being truthful when she said things with Adam were strictly professional. Sally pretended she was just discussing the few business ideas that Chelsea approved. Sally claimed that Adam didn’t seem interested in the details. Chelsea said she and Adam had plans tonight, and she’d fill him in for Sally. Chelsea and Sally spoke to each other in fake cheerful tones. Chloe came out, and Chelsea wished Sally a productive trip to NY. Sally went back inside to get her stuff.

Chloe asked Chelsea if everything was okay. Chelsea got the impression that Sally made another move on Adam. Chelsea was in good spirits because Adam shot Sally down right in front of Chelsea. Chelsea thought Sally must be humiliated. Chelsea went back to work, and Chloe went back inside. Chloe questioned Sally about flirting with Adam outside. Sally said it was a work talk, and she pointed out that Adam was the one who called her outside to talk. Chloe thought Sally was lucky to be going to NY. Sally hoped this was a real trip and not something Chloe and Chelsea cooked up to get rid of her. Chloe said that nobody wanted to get rid of Sally. Chloe hoped Sally and Chelsea could work through their tension once they had some space. Sally thought Chelsea convinced herself that Sally was standing in the way of Chelsea reuniting with Adam. Sally thought once she was out of town, Chelsea might have to face the sad reality that Adam wasn’t interested in her, whether Sally was around or not.

Ashland and Lily continued their conversation at Crimson Lights. Ashland wasn’t sure Billy was sincere about wanting to make peace. In Tuscany, when Billy erased the video Gaines sent, Ashland and Victoria thought they could trust Billy. Then the next thing they knew, Billy was trying to blackmail Ashland. Lily wasn’t interested in rehashing what happened with Gaines. She said Ashland knew Billy had no intention of releasing that article, and Billy even acknowledged it was wrong to threaten to do so. She stated that Billy paid the price. Lily asked Ashland to accept he won and leave Billy alone. Ashland was mystified about why strong intelligent women felt compelled to rush to Billy’s defense. Lily said when Victor put a target on your back, you needed all the support you could get. She warned Ashland that he might not always be on Victor’s good side. Ashland didn’t feel sorry for Billy, because he’d been warned not to disrupt the wedding, and he flew Gaines to Tuscany anyway. Lily said that Victor didn’t go after Billy because of the wedding or out of loyalty to Ashland. Lily said Victor hated Billy for years. Ashland was aware that the bad blood between Billy and Victor went back a long way and that Tuscany was the final straw. Lily said there was no final straw where Victor was concerned.

Ashland knew Lily had a daughter. He asked how charitable she’d feel if someone repeatedly broke Matilda’s heart the way Billy did with Victoria. Lily didn’t think that justified continuing this war into infinity. Lily asked what it was about hounding Billy that gave Ashland so much satisfaction. Ashland said not much, now that Billy didn’t have much to lose – he’d already trashed his career. Lily said that Billy was coming to work for her as her COO, and he’d redeem himself as long as Ashland, Victor and Adam didn’t interfere. Ashland thought Lily was riled up because she wanted to know how this would affect Chancellor. He thought she was smart to keep Billy close so she could keep an eye on him, otherwise Billy would create his own drama. Lily wasn’t interested in management advice. Ashland said he wasn’t interested in feuding with Billy. He shared that his cancer treatment was going well. Lily was happy to hear that. He thought she’d appreciate what he was going through, since she was a cancer survivor. Ashland had a new lease on life, and he didn’t want to expend it on Billy. As long as Billy stuck to his word and moved on, Ashland wouldn’t bother him. Lily was happy and she wished Ashland well. He wished the same to her and Billy, then he left.

Lily went home and called the Chancellor receptionist in Chicago. After they discussed some work issues, Lily asked if Billy was in with Jill. He was, and it appeared to be going well. Lily ended the call. Later, a courier dropped off flowers from Billy. The note said he was proud of her and that he’d be home before her first day.

At the main house, Victor stated that Adam told him Billy came after Newman Media, but Billy failed. Victoria asked if Adam told Victor why. All Victor knew was that Billy dropped the plan for some reason. Victoria said she was the reason. She said that she found out Billy was planning to sue Newman Media and force them to admit the story about Ashland was true. “I demanded that [Billy] back down or else I would come straight to you and Adam,” Victoria lied. “If it weren’t for me, Newman Media would be in a huge mess right now,” Victoria stated. Victor thought that meant Victoria and Adam were even now. Victoria said she didn’t do this to protect Adam. She thought Adam should’ve been protecting Newman Media. Victor didn’t want Victoria using this to go after Adam.

Victoria said she wasn’t attacking Adam. Victoria wasn’t falling for Billy’s claim that he’d dropped the feud with Adam. Victor thought Victoria was right to be skeptical of Billy Victoria contended that Victor should admit he’d given Adam too much responsibility. Victoria knew Victor gave Adam the company to run out of love. Victor refused to rip that out from under Adam by selling Newman Media to Victoria. Victoria said that if Victor felt Adam needed propping, he could use the proceeds of Newman Media to buy Adam a new company. She also thought he should supervise Adam more. She asked him to imagine ChancComm combined with Newman Media and Newman/Locke – they’d be the dominant force in the industry. She asked how he could pass on that.

Victor asked that it wasn’t enough that Victoria beat Newman Media at getting ChancComm. She reminded him that he’d just said she was his daughter. He said she just had a major triumph. She wanted Newman Media too, and she thought it’d be a breeze. He warned her about overconfidence. She pointed out that Cyaxares used to be Ashland’s, so it’d be simple to reintegrate it into Newman/Locke. He asked if Ashland regretted selling Newman Media to him and Adam. Victoria said Ashland was focused on his health, but they had discussed what it would mean to combine the companies. Victoria said Ashland liked her ambition the most. Victor liked Victoria’s ambition too, but he didn’t want to sell her his company. He wanted to give her brother more time to prove himself as CEO. He wasn’t going to yank the company out from under Adam just because Victoria saw through Billy’s scheme before Adam did. Victoria took it in stride. She said that it wouldn’t be long before Adam ran the company into the ground and she could pick it up cheap. Victor didn’t see that happening.

Victoria went to work and talked to Nikki. Nikki was glad that Jill accepted their bid for ChancComm, and she was was pleased Billy didn’t have a media company to weaponize against the Newmans anymore. She said they never could trust his judgment, even when Victoria was with Billy. Victoria agreed. Nikki was also glad that Victor was just fine with Victoria besting Adam. Victoria said she just saw Victor, and he congratulated her. Nikki was delighted that a business issue didn’t cause any family strife. Nikki gave Victoria a gift. Red bottomed shoes to celebrate her victory. Traditionally, people celebrated business deals with champagne, but Nikki didn’t drink, or cigars, but Victoria didn’t like those. Nikki assumed Ashland would get Victoria flowers. Victoria wished she’d been wearing the shoes when she met Victor, since one of her business moves didn’t go over well.

Ashland walked in as Nikki learned that Victoria wanted Newman Media. Nikki thought it sounded like Victoria wanted to own the world. Ashland said Nikki said it like it was a bad thing. Victoria didn’t want to own the world. She said ChancComm used to belong to Newman Enterprises and Newman Media used to belong to Locke Communications group. She just wanted to bring everything back under the same umbrella where it belonged. Nikki wondered if Victoria just wanted to stick it to Adam. Victoria had far more important things to do in her life. She asked when Nikki became so invested in Adam’s welfare. Nikki wasn’t concerned about Adam; she just wanted the family to be peaceful. Victoria said Victor felt the same way because he turned down her offer to keep Adam employed and protect his delicate feelings. Victoria thought that Nikki should look for more shoes, in case Victor came around. Victoria told Ashland about the new tradition. Ashland joked to Nikki that he wore a size 11. Nikki thought Victoria should get rid of the idea of a turf war with Adam. Victoria suggested that Victor could buy Adam another company to play with. Victoria was bugged by the idea of a company with her name on it that wasn’t part of her empire. Nikki looked at Ashland, who smiled.

Victoria was in her office alone. She laid down the law with someone on the phone. Ashland returned and said he liked that she was steering the company with a firm hand. He gave her some coffee, and they took a break. She was happy because he was full of energy. He was surprised Nikki didn’t get behind the idea of Victoria pursuing Newman Media. Victoria didn’t hold that against her mom. She knew Nikki’s instinct was to reduce family tension. Ashland said that Victoria was spot on about Victor’s reaction – it was like Victor was proud Victoria had the guts to snake ChancComm out from under him. Victoria didn’t always understand her father the way she did now. She used to think he favored his sons over his daughters, especially Adam, because he was ruthless. Now she realized Victor just liked winners. It played to her advantage, since she’d been on a roll, coincidentally ever since she fell in love with Ashland. Ashland didn’t want to bring down the mood, but he noted that Victor broke Victoria’s winning streak when he refused to sell Newman Media. Victoria said Victor left the door open.

Victoria said Victor wanted to know what Ashland thought of her wanting to buy Newman Media. Ashland hoped Victoria said he supported her 100%. She did. She sensed that Victor thought Ashland was the one who wanted Cyaxares back and that Victoria offered to buy it for him, though. “Just when I thought he was done underestimating you,” Ashland said. Victoria added that Victor was overestimating Adam. Ashland asked if there was any truth to what Nikki said – was any part of Victoria trying to punish Adam for his past crimes. Victoria said it wasn’t a punishment – she wasn’t vindictive. She said it was about acknowledging Adam never earned his position. She knew people assumed she was where she was out of nepotism, and she fought that assumption every day. Which made it all the more frustrating that Adam was handed a company by their father. “What Victor giveth, he can taketh away,” Ashland said. Victoria vowed to make sure that happened, and Ashland raised his coffee cup to toast to that.

Victor went to Adam’s office and said he wanted to discuss Billy’s scheme. Adam said Billy realized the plan wasn’t going to work, so he waved the white flag. Victor said Victoria found out about Billy’s plan, and she put a stop to it. Adam said that Billy’s plan never would’ve worked anyway. He asked how Victoria found out, but Victor didn’t think that mattered. Adam said the last time he saw Victoria, she made a point of telling him how upset she was about Billy’s behavior, so Billy had her fooled too for awhile. “Victoria saw the whole picture and you didn’t. And you should have,” Victor stated. Adam stated that, as the mother of Billy’s children, Victoria had more opportunities to catch him in a lie than Adam did. Adam asked why Victoria waited for Billy to confess before she went to Victor. Victor said Adam was quibbling with Victoria’s timing instead of acknowledging what almost happened to the company. “Nothing almost happened,” Adam said. He was adamant that he would’ve figured out what Billy was up to, with or without Victoria’s help. Adam said he wasn’t ever going to use the videos of Billy drinking and gambling. Victor thought that was tantamount to Billy saying he wasn’t going to use the dirt on Ashland. Adam disagreed, and he said he was nothing like Billy. “I was only gonna use the videos if we needed to challenge [Billy’s] credibility,” Adam said. Victor thought that Billy would’ve pushed Adam to use them. Victor wanted to know what was up with Sally recording the videos. He asked if she was in on Billy’s scheme. Adam said of course Sally wasn’t involved; she was shocked Billy was faking. Adam understood why Victoria was so worked up – she wanted to protect her husband and business reputation, but he promised Newman Media was never in peril. Adam was more than willing to wash his hands on Billy and focus on the job. Victor decided to take a more active role around here. Adam said that wasn’t necessary, but Victor said this wasn’t up for debate. Victor left.

Adam paced around. He flashed back to a moment with Victor that took place in that very office. Victor said he’d always had faith Adam would overcome his tough past and become the sort of man he was today. Victor said he’d made it clear to everyone in the family that he’d never turn his back on Adam. Adam had promised to prove Victor was right to believe in him. Chelsea arrived, pulling Adam out of his memory. She wanted to set up a time and place for their meeting later. He said he had to cancel. She offered to just bring him takeout later. Adam was short with Chelsea as he asked what she wanted to say. She called him a jerk. He said he was annoyed with someone else, and he shouldn’t take it out on her. He apologized, and she accepted. She asked what happened. He said he was just reminded that when you were a Newman, there was no such thing as independence. Chelsea surmised that Victor was back to being Victor again. She was sure Adam had to see this coming. He said it didn’t make it less irritating. Chelsea lost count of how many times Victor pushed Adam aside or patronized him. She said Adam always came out ahead in the end. He didn’t know why he let Victor get to him. Chelsea said it was because Adam loved Victor, and Victor loved him too. Adam thanked Chelsea. It helped having someone around who knew his history. She said it was her history too. She was there if he ever needed to talk. She suggested they go for drinks and talk now. He agreed, and they left the office.

Nikki went home and found Victor at his chess board. Nikki knew what dilemma Victor was wrestling with. She just heard Victoria had her sights set on Newman Media. Victor asked if Victoria consulted Nikki on that. “Why would she? I’m only her COO,” Nikki sighed. Victor asked what Nikki thought of Victoria’s idea. Nikki thought Victor should discuss it with Victoria. Nikki said she was sure Victoria would have a compelling offer, should Victor be willing to entertain it. Victor noted that Nikki wasn’t willing to give him her opinion. She asked if he told Adam about Victoria’s offer.

Nikki sat with Victor at the chess board. He said this was an unforgiving game, and if you took your eyes off the board for a second, it all fell apart. Nikki wasn’t sure who this analogy was about. She asked who was in danger of making a mistake like that – Victor, Victoria or Adam? Victor had been happy with how things were going with the Newmans – Abby had her family, Nick was talking to him, and Adam had turned his life around. Nikki added that Ashland’s health was improving, and Victoria was optimistic about their life. Victor said he and Nikki had never been stronger. She said that the equilibrium seemed precarious. He agreed that he was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and he thought it might cause a major shift in the family. She said the fact that he was so worried made her worry. He told her not to. He said he adored her.

Recap written by Christine

Ashland visited Victoria at her office, and she was in a great mood because Jill called and wanted to hammer out the details for selling ChancComm to Newman/Locke. He asked if she was smiling because she got ChancComm or because she beat Victor and Adam. It was a little of both, and she was glad to have Newman’s old division back. He assumed her father and brother were seething. She’d talked to Victor, and she got the feeling that he was okay with this, but she knew Adam wouldn’t be. If she got her way, ChancComm wasn’t the only company Adam would lose. While Ashland thought consolidating media companies was a smart move, he wanted Victoria to be sure this was a battle she wanted to fight. He was still an outsider when it came to the constant one-upmanship in this family. He said Victor defended him when everyone else turned their back, so he was wondering if Victoria was going to unnecessarily poke the bear by going after Newman Media. Victoria agreed that Ashland was still an outsider in the family. She said he didn’t understand that a good business battle earned Victor’s respect, not his ire. She said if they acquired these companies, they’d dominate in the field. He loved it when she dominated like this, and he knew what it was like to want more and more and more. They kissed, and she said they made a great team. He recognized that she knew how to play things with her father, but Adam was a wild card. She said she knew how to handle Adam.

Lily went to Adam’s office to ask what he meant by that cryptic text. He asked her to remind her what it said. It said best of luck at Chancellor. Adam didn’t think that seemed cryptic. Lily didn’t believe Adam was sincerely wishing her well. She said that he’d known for some time that she got was promoted at CEO, but he didn’t send her the text until after Billy declared a truce with him. Adam asked if it was that hard to believe that, regardless of what was going on with him and Billy, he respected her and wanted her to do well. Lily didn’t trust Adam. She thought the text was a veiled threat. She wanted to believe the feud with him and Billy was over, but she knew how Adam liked having the last word. He said Billy had a lot of last words yesterday. She thought that he sent the text as a counter-punch because Billy got the best of him. He said he didn’t lose sleep over Billy’s tantrum, and his text was sincere. Lily reiterated that a truce had been declared – Billy left ChancComm even though he did nothing wrong, and he set his ego aside about clearing his name, so he proved he was the bigger man. Adam asked what Lily wanted, because he was sick of hearing about how Billy’s growth was better than anyone else’s. “Ah, there it is. You still haven’t let it go, have you?” Lily replied.

Adam truly wished Lily good luck. He asked why he’d alienate the CEO of Chancellor while he was still trying to acquire ChancComm. He asked if Jill made a decision, and Lily said he knew she couldn’t give him that information. He wanted to be on her good side, since she had influence over Jill. She said best of luck to him. He asked what that meant. And she pointedly said her intentions were sincere and asked if he couldn’t trust her. “I see what you did there,” Adam acknowledged. She said they’d just have to trust what the other said. She added that, in spite of his attempts to destroy Billy’s career, he was coming to work for her as COO. Victor walked in as Lily asked Adam to put the animosity toward Billy behind him, so they could all move on with their lives.

After Lily left, Adam revealed that Billy had only pretended to spiral out of control as a revenge plot. Adam said Billy had been planning to threaten to sue them, just like they threatened to sue him over Ashland. Victor thought it was pathetic that Billy couldn’t come up with his own plot and had just borrowed theirs. Adam said Billy came clean, and according to Lily, he was trying to be a better person. Victor didn’t think Billy would ever be a better person, but he told Adam to leave Billy alone. Victor reasoned that they’d knocked Billy down, and he wouldn’t get back up. Adam thought that was unusually merciful on Victor’s part. Victor said they had more important things to worry about. Jill called and said she was selling ChancComm to Newman/Locke. Adam was shocked and upset. He thought that Lily and Billy must’ve persuaded Jill to do this. Adam wanted to call Jill, but Victor told him to accept the loss. Victor was going to go congratulate Victoria, and he wanted Adam to do the same.

Victoria and Victor met at the main house. Victor assumed Victoria was here to gloat. She said she wasn’t, but he told her that getting Jill to sell her ChancComm was a hell of an accomplishment, and it was fine to gloat. He saw nothing wrong with doing a happy-dance in front of a defeated foe. She said she’d never do that to him, but maybe she would to Adam. Victor always disagreed with Victoria selling Newman’s media division to Billy and Chancellor. She felt it was the right decision at the time. He thought that ChancComm was back where it belonged. He was happy for her, but a little disappointed for Adam. She said that Ashland would be glad because he was a little concerned about Victor’s reaction. Victoria had told Ashland that Victor appreciated a bold business move. He confirmed that he did. She hoped he’d like this then – she offered to buy Newman Media.

Victor asked why Victoria didn’t come to both him and Adam with this proposal. She doubted Adam would entertain the offer. She thought Adam was probably spinning out after losing ChancComm to her, even though he’d done everything he could to weaken the company. Victor asked if this was a business move or if Victoria was trying to avenge Billy. Victoria said it was a business strategy, not a personal vendetta. Victor asked if it was personal for Ashland. Victoria said that Newman Media used to be Ashland’s and there would be some poetic justice in it coming back to him, but that wasn’t why she made her decision. She wanted to have a real stake in the media world, and if she had both these companies, Newman/Locke would be a powerhouse. She asked if he’d sell. “You’re my daughter. You’re Victor Newman’s daughter,” Victor proudly stated.

Victor didn’t see how it was in his and Adam’s advantage to sell Newman Media. He felt that Adam had been doing good things with the business. Victoria asked if Victor was sure about that. Victor thought Newman Media was a powerhouse, and Victoria said that was because Ashland made it that way. She hadn’t seen any innovation since the acquisition. He said that the fashion platform was a success, but she thought that was Sally and Chloe’s doing. Victoria said Adam was just writing the checks, while Victoria had proven her business acumen. Victor refused to compare his kids’ business skills. She thought he should sell Newman Media to her and Ashland before Adam did irreparable damage. He thought she was exaggerating. She said that Adam almost let Billy destroy the company.

At Crimson Lights on the patio, Nate asked Devon what happened with his request for shared custody of Dominic. Devon revealed that Abby and Chance said no. Nate felt bad for pushing Devon to ask. Devon said not to. He noted that Nate gave him the same advice Amanda did. Devon valued Nate’s opinion. He mentioned that Nate coached him through bringing Dominic into the world. Devon felt that the conversation with Abby and Chance was necessary, and it had pushed him to take action.

Devon had decided to file for shared custody. He never expected or wanted this to happen, but Abby and Chance made it clear they were against him having a bigger role in Dom’s life, and Devon was still concerned about Chance’s ability to parent. He knew he was a positive influence in Dom’s life, and he wanted to fight to protect it. Nate asked if this was the best way to handle it. Devon thought it was his only option. Nate worried about what happened when lawyers got involved. Devon didn’t want things to get messy, and he hoped they could get through it as painlessly as possible. Nate wished Devon luck.

Devon asked how living with Elena was. Nate said it was pretty great. He and Elena were concerned initially, because they worked together, but they rarely saw each other at the hospital, now that he was in an administrative role, so it was nice to see her when he got home. Devon was glad to hear it. He said ever since Nate and Elena got back from Victoria’s wedding, they’d been acting like newlyweds. Lily happened to come by, and Nate said he was just about to leave. He said he and Elena were going shopping for the house. Devon asked if they were lamp shopping because Elena threw away his ugly ones. Nate joked that he didn’t want to discuss it. He went inside to grab a drink for Elena.

Nate ran into Ashland, who said his cancer treatment was still doing well. The cancer wasn’t in remission, but it was abating. He hadn’t felt this good in ages. He hoped he’d get more years to build a life and business with Victoria.

Devon told Lily that he was pursuing full custody. Lily shared that Billy was going to be her COO. Deon asked if that meant Billy’s feud with Victor and Adam was over. Devon accepted that Billy made Lily happy, but he still had some concerns. Devon acknowledged Billy came a long way in his personal life, and Devon gave Lily a lot of credit for influencing Billy. However, Devon thought Billy was struggling professionally – look what happened at ChancComm. Lily said that wasn’t Billy’s fault. Devon said that Billy struggled so much to control himself that Victor and Adam were able to exploit that. Devon was worried Billy would be a professional liability for Lily.

Lily finished a call with Billy, then she went inside. She was surprised to see Nate was still there. Ashland said he intercepted Nate for a talk. Nate left. Ashland told Lily that Newman/Locke was officially in talks to buy ChancComm. She knew, and she’d be involved in those talks, as the new CEO. He hoped the negotiations would be pleasant and productive. He started to leave, but she had something to say. Lily had no interest in making excuses for Billy, and she had no interest in whether Ashland was part of the conspiracy to knock Billy off his perch. She also didn’t care if Ashland was actually guilty. She said that it was in the past, and Billy was walking away. Lily asked if Ashland could do the same.

Sally was at Society. She flashed back to Chloe ordering her to smooth things over with Chelsea so that they could work together as a team. Sally then flashed back to Adam brusquely telling her to stop spying on Billy and trying to score points with the boss. Sally called Chelsea and said they needed to figure out this working relationship. Chelsea arrived, but she said she didn’t know what this was all about since Sally already apologized and said she respected Chelsea and wanted to learn from her. “Let’s be real – you didn’t buy any of that. In fact, I didn’t even believe it as it was coming out of my mouth,” Sally replied. Sally had decided to stop spouting platitudes and really try to work together. Sally had some ideas, and she was prepared for Chelsea to reject them all, but Sally wanted Chelsea to provide constructive criticism instead of just saying her ideas were bad. Chloe arrived for the meeting. Sally said she wanted to figure this out, right here and right now.

Sally listed twenty ideas. Chelsea approved of two of them, and there was one she didn’t hate. Sally was dissappointed that so many of her ideas got shot down, but Chelsea said that she accepted 10%. Chloe thought those were pretty good numbers. Sally admitted she’d learned why some of her ideas weren’t as good as she thought, but she also thought Chelsea was biased against her. Chelsea said she was biased against bad ideas. Chelsea thought Sally should do some editing, because when she heard a bad idea from someone, she assumed their next idea would be bad too. She also thought that Sally should’ve picked her top five ideas instead of making them sit through a list of twenty suggestions. “Is that constructive enough for you?,” Chelsea asked. Sally said it was helpful. Chloe thought they’d made a great start. Adam came in and glowered as he looked around. He headed to the bar, and Chelsea rushed to him.

Adam wasn’t in the mood. Chelsea just wanted to say thanks for the talk they had with Connor. She said Connor was becoming okay with the sale of the penthouse, but he wanted her to move into the ranch. He hoped she was working hard to convince Connor that wasn’t the way to go. She said she was. She didn’t want to live that close to Victor. He said he was trying to give his father a wide berth right now too.

Adam was going to look for his own place to live eventually. He left the penthouse for the same reason as Chelsea. Being at the ranch was convenient because Connor could be around family. Chelsea said Connor didn’t need to be at the ranch now that she was back. Adam agreed. Chelsea asked Adam to coffee so they could discuss something important. He said they could grab a drink after work. Chelsea was here to listen to what happened with Victor. Adam said it was just business, and he was learning to rise above Victor pushing his buttons. Chelsea said Adam had really changed.

Back at the table, Chloe thought they should go back to the office because this wasn’t a productive work environment. Sally didn’t agree. She also thought she deserved an Oscar for sitting there with a smile on her face as Chelsea shut down all her ideas. Chloe thought Sally said she was learning a lot. Sally said she was learning to swallow her pride and fake a pleasant demeanor. Chloe sighed, but Sally said she was kidding. Sally said the other part of gaining Chelsea’s trust involved convincing her that she wasn’t interested in Adam, so running out of her would be the wrong move. Sally thought she needed to stay and maintain an air of calm and disinterest.

Chloe thought Sally was interested in Adam, and she said not to try and deny it. If Chloe could see it, she was sure Chelsea would too. Sally thought it sounded like Chloe was taking Chelsea’s side. Chloe said they were all on the same team. Chloe said Chelsea was her best friend, and she brought Sally on because she had a lot to offer. “But we’re not friends, so too bad for me,” Sally said. Chloe insisted that they were friends too, in their own way. Chloe was disappointed in Sally and Chelsea. Sally wanted to prove she was a team player. Chloe wanted Sally to take care of some business in NY. Sally thought the timing was off, and she asked if this was Chloe’s idea or Chelsea’s. Chloe said Sally didn’t get to question her assignments. Chloe thought it was best for Sally and Chelsea to separate for awhile. Chloe said Sally was the face of the brand, so she should go and completing these assignments would show Chelsea how valuable Sally was.

Chelsea returned to the table and said she and Adam were discussing Connor. With a smirk, Chelsea turned to Sally and added that Chelsea and Adam were really in sync as parents. Sally said that was good, since Connor was great and he deserved the best. Adam came over and said “Do you have a minute.” Chelsea leapt up, but Adam was talking to Sally. Adam and Sally went outside. Chloe let Chelsea know that Sally was going to NY. Chelsea thought Sally should get fired, but sending her out of town was the next best thing. Chloe was dismayed because she thought that Chelsea was glad she’d have Adam’s full attention while Sally was gone. Chloe was sure this was going to end in disaster. Chelsea said that she accept it if Adam didn’t see a future for them, but she at least had to try, even Connor said she and Adam had to put in a little effort. Chelsea said Chloe was only working with Adam because he changed. Chelsea also saw the change, and she thought things could be different this time. “The only thing in my way was Sally, and you just took care of that so thank you,” Chelsea said. Chloe groaned.

Outside, Adam apologized for being dismissive yesterday. He said he wasn’t on his best behavior after his run in with Billy. Sally didn’t take it personally. Sally was shivering, so Adam gave her his coat. Sally asked if Adam had business in NY. She had to go there, and it’d be great to have some company.

Imani: Hello, you two. Long time, no see.

Nate: Hey.

Elena: Has it been? I hadn’t noticed.

Imani: Nate, that shirt is such a great color on you. It makes you look even more handsome.

Nate: Why, thank you. I never had someone pay so much attention to my shirts.

[ Both laugh ]

Elena: Hey, since you have such an eye for color, why don’t you help me resolve this issue? Which rug do you like better?

Imani: Oh, well, they’re both nice. It all depends on the decor of the rest of the room. Where’s this going to go?

Elena: Our bathroom. I moved in with Nate.

**************

Sally: All I’m saying is a little later would be better for him.

Chelsea: He’ll make time for me.

Adam: I thought I told you that I was —

Chelsea: It’s me.

Adam: Nobody knocks anymore. Why do I even bother having a door? I should just take it off the hinges and let everybody waltz in and out of here at will.

Chelsea: Well, you’re in a good mood. Something happen?

Adam: It’s nothing.

Chelsea: Save it for someone who doesn’t know you like I do.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Billy came in here, shooting his mouth off like he had just won the lottery or something, when everybody knows that he is a complete and utter failure and he always will be.

Chelsea: I don’t get it. You made all these changes in your life. You’ve got everything going for you. So, why can’t you let this go? Will this battle between you and Billy ever end?

Faith: As if you don’t love school.

Moses: My first day back, I’m gonna wear this sweater. I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on it. You really got me the best Christmas gift ever.

Faith: I did nail it, if I do say so myself.

Moses: Yeah, and, you know, I’m sorry my book gift wasn’t as cool. It’s just Elena mentioned getting a book from Nate, and it just seemed like a thing, like it was romantic.

Faith: I totally love it.

*******************

Moses: Could I be more of a dork? “Hey, Adam, you gave your kidney to my girlfriend before she was my girlfriend, but you’re still the only reason she’s around to be my girlfriend.”

Faith: That is not how you sounded.

Moses: It was lame and narcissistic, and I’m embarrassed.

Faith: Nobody thought that. It was sweet. But, yeah, the whole thing was weird. I hated Adam a lot. He’s this good guy, but then he does horrible things. Or he’s a horrible guy that does good things.

Moses: Yeah, I get it. But I’m just glad for your sake he had one of those good moments for you.

Phyllis: Hey, amanda!

Amanda: Hey, you!

Phyllis: How are you?

Amanda: I’m good. I’m good.

Phyllis: Good. [ Chuckles ]

Amanda: Everything is going great. Imani and I — we are rocking our new partnership.

Phyllis: Of course you are. I’ve no doubt.

Amanda: How are you?

Phyllis: I’m alr–

Are you phyllis summers?

Phyllis: Um, yes, I am, in the flesh.

This is for you. You’ve been served.

Phyllis: Wait. What? Uh…

Nate: So, what do you think? The blue rug?

Elena: I actually think the beige rug goes better with the wallpaper.

Nate: I never thought that buying a rug online could be so contentious.

Elena: You never thought about buying a rug period, or else you would have had one by now.

Nate: Well, what can I say? You’ve domesticated me.

[ Laughs ]

Nate: Mm.

Lily: Have I told you in the last half-hour how happy I am that you ditched your plan to take down newman media?

Billy: Well, if this is my reward, I will abandon my plans more often.

Lily: [ Laughs ] Okay, 100% honesty?

Billy: Shoot.

Lily: Are you sure that you want to come to work with me at chancellor? ‘Cause I don’t want you to feel like it’s a consolation prize.

Billy: Do you realize how many people would kill to be your coo at chancellor? I mean smart, experienced people.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Maybe not as much sex appeal, but that’s debatable. There is no one that is going to be more devoted to you than I am, no one that’s gonna want to see you succeed more than i do. You’re about to take over the world, and I couldn’t be more proud to be the man to help you do it.

Lily: Even though things didn’t turn out the way you wanted them to?

Billy: Who said they didn’t? I mean, the whole plan was for vindication, right? To get adam to admit that he set me up for a fall in order to take me down and get his hands on chanccomm. Then when victoria figured out that the downward spiral of billy abbott was all a ruse, well, then I became focused on getting my hands on newman media, which was not a good idea, and thank you for helping me see that.

Lily: Yeah. I mean, she was using you.

Billy: Yeah. Well, you know, I lost focus of the big picture. The last thing I want to be is anchored to the soul-sucking anger that fuels adam’s existence.

Lily: Oh, god, I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when you told him the truth.

Billy: Yeah, it felt good to tell him that he wasn’t worth it. He’s taken up far too much valuable real estate in my mind and in my life. And I deserve better, and you deserve a better me.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Well, I could not be prouder or more in love with you than I am right now.

Sally: [ Sighs ] Chelsea. Hello.

Chelsea: Sally. Any reason you are loitering in the hallways?

Sally: I just had a meeting with adam.

Chelsea: Why don’t you go back to the office? I’ll be there in a few minutes. We can go over your recent article pitches.

Sally: Actually, adam is in the middle of something, so maybe you should come back later.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] Well, this is personal, about our son.

Adam: [ Sighs ] -We are here! -For new homeowners,

Imani: Wow. Moving in together is such a big step. I hadn’t realized you two were that serious.

Elena: Uh-huh.

Imani: Well, congratulations.

Nate: Thank you. We’re very happy.

Elena: Well, I know billable hours are important to lawyers, so we wouldn’t want to get in the way of your work.

Imani: [ Chuckles ] Right. And it looks like my takeout is ready, so I will be on my way. That is your color.

[ Chuckles ] Mm.

Nate: Wow. You really brought the claws out.

Elena: I was just reminding her of our relationship status so she can stop flirting with you.

Nate: You were doing a good deed.

Elena: Yes, I was. What can I say? I’m a giver.

Nate: [ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone ringing ] It’s roland.

Elena: Roland from the hospital’s board of directors?

Nate: [ Clears throat ] Hi, roland. What’s going on?

Lily: It’s really amazing how quickly you go from basking in the afterglow to thinking about corporate domination.

Billy: Am I that transparent?

Lily: Oh, yeah. You have your business face on. I like it.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] I’m just thinking that there’s something I need to do before i join you at chancellor.

Lily: What, buy some new ties?

Billy: No, not exactly.

[ Clears throat ] I need to go repair the bridge i burned with my mother. I said some horrible things to her before she left, and I need to make it right.

Lily: What are you gonna do?

Billy: Well, I’m pretty sure she’s in chicago this week, isn’t she?

Lily: Yeah. She’s meeting with the execs about the transition.

Billy: Okay. Well, that’s where I’m headed then because this is more than an e-mail or a video chat. I need to tell her in person that I am sorry for what happened at chanccomm and that I am 100% devoted to you at chancellor.

Lily: Okay. And make sure you let her know that I am behind you 100%. Do you want me to come with you?

Billy: You can’T.

Lily: Yes, I can come with you. I can meet the team out there and, you know, be there for moral support.

Billy: Well, that is very sweet of you, but I think I need to do this on my own. Besides, like I said, you are about to take over the world. You need to stay put, get focused.

Lily: Okay. Well, if you change your mind, let me know. I think people don’t realize how hard it is to say I’m sorry.

Billy: Yeah. Speaking of making amends, there’s someone else that I need to apologize to now that I’ve given up my plan to eviscerate adam.

Adam: There is no battle between me and billy. Not anymore. In his warped way, he called a truce. He concocted some retaliation scheme that fell apart, so that’s why he came here to tell me that. It was yet another of billy’s failures.

Chelsea: Sounds like a good thing. So, why do you look like you’ve lost?

Adam: It’s complicated.

Chelsea: He pushed your buttons in a way only billy can?

Adam: Okay, maybe it’s not that complicated after all.

Chelsea: Well, I have a solution. Forget about billy. You are running newman media. You are at the top of your game. Celebrate that. Forget billy.

Adam: Okay. It’s forgotten. Why don’t you have a seat, tell me what’s going on?

Chelsea: I need your help. It involves connor.

Adam: What’s wrong?

Chelsea: He is upset about the idea of selling the penthouse.

Adam: I thought he was having trouble adjusting to the penthouse because of the memories, just like you were. I thought moving out, it would be good for him starting fresh somewhere else.

Chelsea: That’s how he felt at first, but now that we’ve gone through the nuts and bolts of what it’s gonna be like — you know, packing our stuff up, finding a new place — I think it became real for him. He got really upset, he says this thing is totally unfair, and he ended up in tears.

Adam: Well, that’s weird. He rarely cries anymore.

Chelsea: Well, that’s how badly it’s affecting him.

[ Sighs ] Selling the penthouse is the logical decision. We need to escape those ghosts. But it’s not easy, adam, to just pack up your life, all those memories, and move on, you know?

Adam: Yeah. What do you think we should do?

Chelsea: I need your help making this whole thing okay… for connor.

Adam: Of course. I’ll do whatever I can.

Sally: I have the budget for the video project we have been batting around.

Chloe: Great. Um, that isn’t why I wanted to see you. We need to get our arms around this situation.

Sally: I’m sure adam will okay it.

Chloe: Oh, no, that’s not the situation I was talking about. We need to re-evaluate what’s going on with you and chelsea if this is gonna work.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I’m not the problem. Chelsea is. She’s threatened by me personally and professionally, and if anyone is going anywhere, it should be her.

Chloe: Do you hear yourself? Your negative attitude is having an impact on the platform i created. It’s messing with my dreams, which makes it my problem. So, you work for me, which makes it an even bigger problem for you. Do we understand each other? Clerk: Hello, how can I?

Connor: What do you guys want to do first? We can go feed the horses, or we can go skating. I’ll bet you can wear an old pair of grandma’S.

Chelsea: Well, that sounds like fun, but —

Adam: That is not why we’re here.

Connor: Did I do something wrong?

Chelsea: No. No, not at all. Why don’t we — why don’t we all sit down?

Adam: Yeah. We just wanted to talk.

Chelsea: About moving out of the penthouse.

Connor: Oh.

Adam: I know that change can be scary. And you have had so many in your life, but you know what? A lot of them turned out to be pretty awesome.

Connor: I had to go to boarding school.

Chelsea: Yeah, but you learned a lot and you made friends you’re gonna have forever.

Connor: We went to minnesota.

Chelsea: Yeah, and you got to spend time with your other grandma, and now you live here with your dad. You get to ride horses, and noah’s teaching you how to play hockey.

Connor: I don’t want things to change anymore. I want mom’s house to stay mom’s house. I like it there.

Adam: What are you talking about? Last time I checked, you wanted to move because of all the memories.

Connor: Yeah, but now there’s some new good ones, like the three of us at christmas. Remember? When we were all together and everybody was happy?

Adam: Yeah, we did have a good time.

Connor: And we can do it again.

Adam: Connor, you know that your mom and I — we’re not together anymore.

Chelsea: And, you know, we can be happy anywhere. So, what do you think is best? Should we move in to a house with a big backyard? You can play with all your friends. I can garden. Or maybe we could move into a building with a game room and a pool. You can swim any time you want.

Adam: Yeah, those sound like pretty doable options. Don’t you think?

Connor: Actually, I know a place that has all of those cool things, plus more.

Chelsea: You do? Where’s that?

Connor: Right here! The ranch is big enough for all of us. You’ll never find a place better than this.

Adam: Sounds like you’ve given this quite a bit of thought.

Amanda: It’s a civil suit accusing you of fraud, false advertising, mental distress, and pain and suffering.

Phyllis: I mean, I’ve been known to cause people mental distress and pain and suffering definitely, but false advertising is ridiculous.

Amanda: Yeah, the claimant is a guest who apparently didn’t get the experience that she wanted at escape club.

Phyllis: Seriously? Can I see that, please? Do you mind? Thank you. A guest who didn’t get the experience that they wanted. Oh. This girl. She was a freak. Oh, I remember this. She wanted us to create some event from her youth.

Amanda: Okay, well, that doesn’t sound too bad, reliving a happy memory.

Phyllis: No, it was about getting dumped.

Amanda: Okay, I take that back. That is really weird.

Phyllis: Yeah, but she wanted to do the dumping this time. And she had this crazy script written out, and she wanted all of us to act it out. And I had to explain, “hey, we’re a hotel. We’re not an acting troupe, you know?”

Amanda: Do you still have the script?

Phyllis: Oh, I do! I just had to save this one. Here. I’ll send it to you.

Amanda: Okay.

[ Tablet pings ]

[ Scoffs ]

[ Chuckles ] Oh, this is good.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. See what I mean?

Amanda: This is really good.

[ Chuckling ] What?

Billy: Thank you for coming by. I appreciate it. Why don’t you, uh, have a seat?

Traci: Well, your text was kind of vague, so I really hope nothing’s wrong.

Lily: No, no, no. Just the opposite.

Billy: I wanted you to come by so I could tell you in person that I abandoned the plan. It’s — it’s over.

Traci: Really? You mean no more pretending you’re drinking, you’re gambling?

Billy: No more. That was all just about me trying to rebuild my reputation, and it was taking me to a place that wasn’t good. And, you know, I appreciate the both of you for showing me the light.

Traci: I am so grateful you listened.

Billy: Well, it took me a while to get over the anger and find some clarity. But, uh, I’m good now, and i want to apologize to you for putting you in a position for having to lie for me, even if it was for a short amount of time.

Traci: No, I’m just so relieved, and I know jack will be, too.

Billy: Good. I went to adam, and I told him that I was conning him and that I am done because he’s not worth it.

Traci: Oh, billy, good for you. I just hope there’s some way for you to hang on to this feeling, for you realize that backing away was the right thing.

Billy: No. I agree. And, yes, it feels good.

Traci: And now I should tell you something. Um, I was so upset by this plan that I went to victoria to talk to her about it. I didn’t hold anything back. I told her exactly how I felt.

Billy: Is that right? And what made you think that i needed you to interfere, traci?

Lily: Well, billy, she meant well.

Billy: That’s fine, but, i mean, you know, you don’t think I can handle anything on my own or what?

Traci: Well, of course I do now, honey. But I’m just so grateful that you reassessed and that you listened to two women in your life who really love you.

Billy: You know, I just wish that you would stop treating me like a wayward child.

New vicks vapostick. Strong soothing vapors…

Sally: Since when does hanging out with someone on new year’s eve mean the end of the world?

Chloe: When the someone is adam.

Sally: It wasn’t a big deal.

Chloe: It’s affecting the way we do our jobs, which makes it an enormous deal. How many times do I have to tell you to stay away from him?

Sally: I didn’t force him to hang out with me. The man doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to do.

Chloe: That’s not the point.

Sally: Okay, I get it. This is about chelsea. She just can’t seem to move on, even though adam has zero interest in rekindling the past. That is why she thinks I’m a problem. She’s angry. She’s threatened. And she’s being kind of vindictive.

Chloe: She is my best friend. She’s also a spectacular designer and your boss. So you running your mouth about her is probably the dumbest thing that you can do. You are putting me in a really difficult position. Both you and chelsea are incredibly talented, intelligent, ambitious women who have so much to offer. We all want this platform to be a success, and I just want us to all get along and work together as a team. But that won’t be possible if you continue on your current trajectory. So fix it.

Sally: I’m not —

Chloe: It wasn’t a suggestion.

Phyllis: “I know all about you and barbara, the tawdry e-mails, the secret meetings.”

Amanda: “Becky, I can explain –”

Phyllis: “Vince, I will do all the explaining here. You are a lying, cheating dog. It just took a while to hear you barking.”

“But I love you.”

Phyllis: “Oh, no, you love that I pay the rent. You love that I cook and clean. And those days are over. Pack your bags and give me back your key. Maybe, if you’re lucky, barbara will let you crash with her, but I think her husband might have a problem with that.”

Amanda: Ohh, I have to admit, I did not see that plot twist coming.

Phyllis: Yeah, and then it gets worse. Oh, gosh. She loses her mind on her ex, and then he gets hit by a bus.

Amanda: Well, you definitely couldn’t do that, so I guess she didn’t get the closure she wanted.

Phyllis: So that’s what this lawsuit is about — her closure. Right? I mean, I never promised her that we would hit her ex with a bus. I never did that.

Amanda: I mean, people get really vengeful after breakups.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Yeah, they do. It’s not so funny anymore, right? I mean, I have been there, so filled with rage and jealousy to the point where I just have to hit someone with my car.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] You mean you fantasized about it.

Phyllis: Sure.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] Phyllis.

Phyllis: Anyway.

[ Both laugh ] I’ve made a lot of mistakes when it comes to men. And apparently I keep on doing it. I guess I stood jack up for christmas eve, and he’s out of town, we’re not talking, and i just feel bad. I feel selfish when it comes to jack. I feel like I rely on him too much.

Amanda: It’s okay to rely on a friend, especially when they rely on you, too.

Phyllis: I know. But I’m selfish. I really am. I feel like I’ve taken more from him than I’ve given.

Amanda: Well, it sounds like you’re trying to be a better friend, and that’s good, as long as you do that and you don’t leave him in a lurch.

Phyllis: Yeah. Hey, let’s not talk about jack anymore. Let’s discuss this lawsuit.

Amanda: Oh, don’t worry about that. I can take care of this.

Phyllis: I don’t want you to take care of it. I want to handle this in a different way.

Elena: So, let me get this straight. The hospital board is upset that you took me as your date to the fundraising banquet?

Nate: As far as I know, it’s just roland who has an issue with it. He said he didn’t think it was appropriate for a department head to be dating a first-year attending physician.

Elena: He did seem a little uptight.

Nate: Still, I can’t believe he had the nerve to call me up to criticize me about my personal life. It almost makes me wonder if being chief of surgery’s worth the hassle.

Traci: Well, of course i realize that you’re an adult, billy. That’s why I hold you accountable for your actions.

Billy: Well, it’s not exactly black and white, is it? I mean, how many times did victor screw over jack? How many times did jack feel like he had to stand up for himself? Did you ever go to victor and tell him to back down, traci?

Traci: No, but I called jack out on his behavior countless times. That ridiculous feud did devastating things to our family. And for you to hold that up as some excuse for your behavior, it makes me really sad and really angry.

Lily: Okay, look, at the end of the day, you have someone who cares about you, alright? And it’s better to have someone who cares too much than too little. So, you’ve made a huge decision. You’re in a great place emotionally. Let’s not do anything to mess this up.

Billy: I’m sorry.

Traci: Well, old patterns are difficult to break for all of us.

Billy: That is for sure.

Traci: [ Voice breaking ] I hope — I hope you will call jack with all this good news.

Billy: I will. I’ll call him later.

Traci: Okay. And I hope that you won’t think I’m your meddling sister if i ask what you plan to do now.

Billy: No. Please.

Traci: [ Laughs ] Okay.

[ Sniffles ] Well, I know that jack has offered you a position at jabot, and we all know that daddy would just have been so happy if you were back there.

Billy: Yeah, he did, and i appreciate the offer and I like the idea of that, but, uh, I’m gonna go work for lily over at chancellor as her coo.

Traci: Well, that is fantastic! I’m just so happy for both of you!

Billy: Yeah. It’s gonna be good. Of course, first things first. I have to go find jill and make things right with her.

Traci: Make amends. I’m just so proud of you, billy.

Billy: Thank you.

Traci: I know everything is gonna go just great.

Billy: I believe so, too. I appreciate that.

Lily: Well, it’s getting late. You should probably go pack.

Billy: Yeah.

Traci: Sorry.

[ Laughs ]

Billy: I love you. Thank you again. I appreciate it. I’ll see you soon, okay?

Traci: Okay.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Traci: [ Laughs ] Alright, tell me the truth. Is billy as alright as he says he is?

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Adam: Connor, you are smart enough to know that your mom — she can’t move to the ranch.

Connor: I just want us to be a family again.

Adam: Your mom and I — we love you very much.

Connor: Then we should try living together again, all of us.

Adam: Look, your mom works with me, and we’re good friends, but we’ve agreed that we’re not gonna be living together.

Connor: But nobody asked me what I wanted. And you were apart for a long time before, then got back together. You haven’t even tried this time.

Adam: That’s because, connor, these — these are grown-up decisions.

Connor: We should try living together again, see if you guys change your mind. You’d at least try if you really want me to be happy.

Adam: Connor, of course we want you to be happy. But sometimes in life things happen that we don’t like, and we have to try to accept them.

Connor: But you promised. You said we were going to be a real family again, that you’d try and work things out.

Adam: I know, and that was a long time ago. And a lot has changed since then.

Connor: I don’t want things to change anymore. I want to be a family!

Chelsea: Connor — connor, I told you. We will always be a family. We are always gonna love each other and want what’s best for each other and — and share the same jokes, share the same memories. You don’t have to live under the same roof to be a family, okay? You could be on the other side of the world. You could be — you could be on the moon, and we would still be a family.

Connor: I just want us to spend time together.

Chelsea: We will still have days like christmas. I promise, okay? And your dad and I — we’re gonna go to every game and every performance at school. We’re gonna spend so much time together — so much! But I do need to find a new place to live. It’s a big job. I could use your help. Are you up for it?

Connor: Yeah.

Chelsea: Okay. Come here.

[ Sighs ]

Amanda: I hope you don’t want to countersue because that is rarely worth it.

Phyllis: I’m going to handle this outside of the legal system.

Amanda: I strongly advise against that, but if you do, I do not need to hear —

Phyllis: I am going to offer becky a year membership for free in the escape club.

Amanda: As a strategy of de-escalation. I approve.

Phyllis: I’m gonna call becky now.

Lily: Honestly, billy is fine. He really is. He really turned a corner today. And he was doing great until victor and adam tried to cut him off at the knees, you know, which is why even though i thought his plan was outrageous, I…understood it.

Traci: You wanted to support him?

Lily: Yeah. Yeah. You know, I — I knew that he needed to regain what he lost. But I think I was able to be there for him because I love him, you know, and I knew that he needed someone to believe in him. And everything was going great until, of course, victoria had to insert herself, and then everything went awry. And I was really worried at first that he was gonna fall back into his old self-destructive behavior. But he didn’T. So, I know that, you know, you haven’t trusted his choices in the past, obviously, but I think now you can trust him a bit and let go.

Traci: Oh, I do trust him. It’s just that he takes so long to work everything out.

Lily: Yeah, I know.

Traci: [ Laughs ] Oh, lily, I’m so grateful that you’re in his life, that you love him and understand him, and that you can protect him in a way that he doesn’t resent.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, I think we just get each other, maybe ’cause we were friends for so long before we got together.

Traci: Yeah, you two do go back a long time.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Traci: You know, I look at you and sometimes I think about what colleen might be like at your age, with all of this life experience behind you and all of these adventures left ahead.

Lily: I know. I’ve been thinking about her a lot, too, lately. Just thinking back to when we were teenagers and we got tattoos and nose piercings. Remember?

Traci: Yes, I do.

Lily: And I’m like, “my gosh, neither one of us would have never know that I would become ceo of chancellor.

Traci: But she would be as proud of you as I am. Honey, ever since you were a little girl, I have always known that you have it in you to do great things. And billy is so fortunate to have you in his life.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Coughing and sneezing ]

Billy: I think that’s it.

Lily: Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you to chicago?

Billy: I mean, look, I would love for you to come to chicago with me, not only to be a buffer between and my mother, but also so I could wine and dine you and show you just how grateful I am for all the support you’ve given me lately. But most importantly, you are stepping into the new role as ceo of chancellor, and you need to be here.

Lily: Fine. When will you be back?

Billy: Before your first day. And I’ll be prepared to do whatever you ask me to do, not that you’re gonna need any help because you’re gonna be amazing. You be you, just on a grander scale, for a much bigger audience.

Lily: [ Laughs ] Have I told you that I love you?

Billy: Mm-hmm.

Lily: Yeah?

Elena: Are you saying you want to quit your job as chief of surgery?

Nate: No. It’s just, I understood taking a more administrative role would be an adjustment. I just didn’t realize how much of the job had to do with office politics and bureaucracy.

Elena: Yeah, but you’re doing such good work. You’re setting policy to improve patient outcomes, and those fundraising dinners are raising so much money for cutting-edge research.

Nate: I know. That’s why I’m determined to make it work. Well, that and the fact that I like working with you. Even though it makes some peons uncomfortable.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Amanda: So…

Phyllis: So…

Amanda: …How’d it go?

Phyllis: Okay, my friend becky has gone from disgruntled to the point of suing to vip member of the escape club.

Amanda: That’s terrific.

Phyllis: Yep. She apologized profusely. She even cried a little.

Amanda: What? Phyllis, I am so proud of you. Good job.

Phyllis: Thanks.

Amanda: I guess you don’t need me.

Imani: Amanda, why didn’t you tell me elena moved in with nate?

Amanda: Because I didn’t think it was something that you needed to know.

Imani: Ugh, it would have spared me an awkward and disappointing conversation.

Phyllis: Hey. Is this imani?

Amanda: Phyllis summers, meet my sister, imani benedict, who has been nakedly thirsting after nate hastings for a while.

Imani: Hey, I resent that characterization.

Amanda: Oh?

Phyllis: Um, well, nice to meet you. Amanda has told me a lot about you, omitting the thirsting for nate. Um, but you have good taste, you know?

Imani: Thank you for the validation, phyllis. Amanda’s told me a lot about you, too.

Phyllis: Oh. What’d she say?

Imani: That you’re a great friend and a little bit of a hell-raiser.

[ Chuckles ] But that means we’ll get along great.

Phyllis: Okay. Well, we just might.

Sally: Hi. I didn’t realize you left.

Adam: Sally. What do you need?

Sally: I was hoping that you could take a look at a budget I’ve been working on for some upcoming projects.

Adam: Um, now is not a good time.

Chelsea: Try not to take it personally. Adam’s main priority will always be his family. I’m sure you understand.

Sally: Of course I do. I should get back to work. Actually [Sighs]… I spoke with chloe, and there is something that I need to get off my chest.

Meet ron.

Phyllis: Hey, jack. It’s phyllis. Um, I — I hope I’m getting your voicemail because you’re in an important meeting and not because you pressed “decline” when you saw my name pop up. Mnh. That’s a joke. Just — anyway, um, I’m just checking in, saying hi. Bye.

Chelsea: Okay. Tell me what’s on your mind. Really. I’m interested.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I just want to apologize for any and all misunderstandings. I hope I have not given you the wrong impression.

Chelsea: And what would that be?

Sally: That I am after adam. Because I’m not.

Chelsea: Really?

Sally: I respect him as my boss, and I am very grateful for his professional support, but that’s it. All I want it to work with you.

Chelsea: For me.

Sally: And to learn from you.

Chelsea: Well, I’m really happy to hear that ’cause at the end of the day, we have the same goal — for the fashion platform to be an unqualified success.

Billy: You’re not worth my time. You’re not worth the space in my head. You’re — you’re really not worth anything to anyone. You will always be the runner-up newman, the epic failure, two steps behind all the time.

Lily: Why are you in such a rush to leave?

Billy: Because the sooner i get out of here, the sooner i can get back into your lovin’ arms.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Are we gonna pick up where we left off?

Billy: Oh, no, no, no. Brand-new start.

Lily: So, how billy and lily conquer the world.

Billy: Oh, wow.

Lily: Step one — I am going to prepare an agenda for my first day at chancellor.

Billy: Mm-hmm.

Lily: And step two — I will craft a press release announcing you as my new coo.

Billy: Skip step two. Focus on step one. And don’t worry, okay? Don’t work so hard. You got this.

Lily: Okay. Well, good luck in chicago.

Billy: Thank you. I’m gonna need it.

Lily: And, listen, jill understands what you were up against with adam and victor, so I’m sure she’ll forgive a few harsh words, okay? And then you’ll come back to me.

Billy: That’s the plan. That is the plan. Okay. Come here.Billy: One more for the road. Mm-mmm! Alright.

Lily: Okay. Call me when you land.

Billy: I will. I love you.

Lily: I love you, too. Bye.

Billy: Bye.

“the young and the restless”…

Victoria: I’d like to make a proposal. I’d like to buy newman media.

Nick: I just remembered I’ve got this very important root canal I gotta get to —

Mariah: Hey, hey!

Summer: Nice try.

Mariah: No, no, no. Have a seat, birthday boy.

Lauren: Michael is at a crossroads.

Michael: To retire or not to retire?

Kevin: I think the answer’s clear.

Chloe: I mean, it’s pretty obvious.

Kevin: Mm-hmm. Don’t do it!

Chloe: Get out now!

Ashland: Well, something’s got you out of sorts.

Victoria: I’m just frustrated. I haven’t heard from billy. He hasn’t responded to any of my messages. I’m worried that he might be waffling on the plan.

Ashland: Well, relying on billy to do something as important as this was always a risky bet.

Victoria: Billy’s not a problem, at least not yet. He just hasn’t given me his answer.

Ashland: No. There are more powerful ways to undermine adam and to force newman media to sell. I built an empire off moves that compelled companies to do just that. But never once was I required to trust someone as unpredictable as billy.

Victoria: Well, I’m not ready to kick him to the curb just yet. Working with him will be a small price to pay for a big pay-off. Can you imagine the look on adam’s face when he realizes that we’ve taken over newman media?

Ashland: Are you sure your motivation for doing this is adam? The two of you haven’t had any huge issues lately.

Victoria: This has nothing to do with sibling rivalry. It’s business.

Ashland: Well, I hate to say it, but it seems to me like this is more, once again, of you trying to protect billy.

Billy: All I’m asking you to do is reconsider your decision from yesterday. Don’t pull out of the plan now.

Lily: No, I was on board when it was our plan, but now it’s become victoria’s plan, and i want no part of that.

Billy: I still have control. She can’t do anything without me.

Lily: Yeah, and you’re worried that you can’t pull this off without me.

Billy: No, that’s not what it is. I want to be side-by-side with you. I want to work together because that’s where we are strongest.

Billy: No, they haven’T. This is still about getting back at victor and adam for what they did to us. That is still the goal.

Lily: No, the original was you repairing your reputation, not building victoria’s empire.

Billy: [ Sighs ] Look, if I can get my hands on adam’s company, okay, that allows me to prove myself, that I am still capable of running a business.

Lily: Oh, my god, how do you know that she’s even gonna follow through with her end of the bargain? And even if she does, that has you working for her, instead of

with me. Is that what you want?

Billy: No, that’s not what i want, and that’s not what this is about at all.

Lily: You know what? This is you and victoria falling into old patterns, and honestly, I want nothing to do with it.

Billy: Lily, just list– that’s — lily, please.

Faith: I can’t believe winter break is almost over.

Moses: [ Groans ] Back to the grind.

Adam: Hi, faith.

Faith: Hi.

Adam: Moses, what’s up?

Moses: Nothing, it’s just every time I see you, I think, “hey, that’s the guy who saved faith’s life.”

Amanda: Good morning.

Devon: Hey.

Amanda: Have you had breakfast yet?

Devon: I have not.

Amanda: Okay, do you want me to make you something? I can cook some eggs or toast.

Devon: No. I’ll pass. Thank you, though.

Amanda: Well, I have to thank you for getting out of bed so quietly last night. But your pillow was still empty when the sun came up this morning. So clearly you won’t sleep, you won’t eat. This is about dominic, isn’t it?

Abby: What are you up to? Looking into those police cases rey told you about yesterday?

Chance: [ Chuckles ] No, actually. I’m just checking out some parenting articles.

Abby: Oh. Learn any new tricks?

Chance: Yeah, a few, actually. But, abby, there’s actually something on my mind that I want to talk to you about.

Abby: What?

Chance: Well, I’ve made some decisions about returning to the force.

provided by… doesn’t your family deserve the best?

Devon: I know you’re concerned, and I appreciate it, but you really don’t have to be.

Amanda: You sure about that?

Devon: Yes.

Amanda: ‘Cause I really hate leaving you like this. You know, I could get imani to cover all of my new client meetings. I could stay here if you want to just talk.

Devon: No, no, no, no, no. This is a big day for you guys. You guys got your first clients with your new law firm. I’m not gonna let you miss that. Alright?

Amanda: Okay, but you call me if you need anything, alright?

Devon: I promise I will. Okay? Will you get out of here? And good luck.

Amanda: Thank you.

Lily: Hey.

Amanda: Lily, hi.

Lily: Hi. Where are you going? I have treats.

Amanda: Yum, I would really love to stay, but I got to get to work.

Lily: Okay.

Amanda: Talk to him.

Lily: Okay, yeah. Alright, bye. Hello.

Devon: Hi. Did amanda call and ask you to come check on me?

Lily: No, she didn’t, but I’m glad I did. I wanted to see how you were doing. So where do things stand with you and the baby?

Abby: Well, I would much rather talk about the parenting articles you’re reading than your return to the gcpd.

Chance: I know. I will share everything that i picked up from these with you later, but I got to get this off my chest, okay? I’ve been thinking about the way I acted yesterday. I just got so fixated on going back to work and becoming a detective again. I got all excited after one meeting with rey — one meeting. And I’m guessing you were pretty annoyed by that, even though you didn’t say anything.

Abby: Not so much annoyed as disheartened.

Chance: And I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say, except that I just felt this rush of adrenaline, just talking about those cases, you know? But after I came off that high, I thought about how I reacted to even thinking about going back to the force. And I realized something.

Abby: How much you missed it and can’t wait to get back out there?

Chance: Quite the opposite, actually. Look, I know you were not crazy about the idea from the get-go, and I know what it means to our family, so I’m gonna talk to the chief and I’m gonna see about extending my time off indefinitely.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Lily: Suddenly this is now victoria’s chess game, and you and I are the pawns. I’m not doing this. I refuse to let either one of us be used by her.

Jack: Please tell me i misunderstood just now. It sounded like you said you’re going to fall apart just to mess with the newmans?

Lily: You are at her mercy. Do you really think that she’s gonna give you control of a media company after you tried to stop her wedding? After what you tried to do to her husband? I mean, do you really think that you can trust her with anything?

Jack: Why would you want to stay mired in this obsessive need to hurt victor and adam? You have other options!

Lily: We are strongest together, but not with victoria in the mix.

Billy: That’s iT. This is done. This is over. The jig is up.

Sally: [ Fake accent ] I don’t know what you’re talking about. You have the wrong person.

Billy: You’re embarrassing yourself, sally. In this ridiculous disguise. Get up. We’re going to see your boss.

Moses: Hey, elena. Just the person I was looking for.

Elena: Hey, moses. How’s it going?

Moses: Good. But I was just wondering if i could ask you for a favor. Hey, so I’m gonna just head out for a little bit. I’ll be back later.

Faith: With elena?

Moses: What? No. I just have something to do. It’ll be short, but if you don’t want to wait for me, I can come by later and swing by your place.

Faith: I have to finish my winter break reading assignment, so it’s fine. I’ll be here.

Moses: Okay, cool. I’ll see you later.

Victoria: I have no desire to control billy. It was actually his demand to be put in charge of newman media once we acquire it, not mine.

Ashland: But you can’t deny it would put him firmly back in your orbit.

Victoria: I assure you, that’s not his motive. And remember, I have no intention of putting him in charge. He is just a useful tool with a plan already in motion.

Ashland: A risky plan with greater odds of failure than success, and you’re smart enough to see that.

Victoria: I realize that me working with billy is a sore spot for you, and I understand why you might feel that way, after everything that he’s done to try to hurt you. But you have to trust me on this one. We will benefit.

Ashland: I’m not gonna tell you what to do. But I think you’re making a foolish move, one I can’t say i understand.

Adam: Billy.

[ Clears throat ] Whatever it is you want, I don’t have the time, so you might as well turn around and leave.

Billy: Save it, adam. You’re not a good enough actor to pretend you don’t want to hear what I have to say, especially after all the work you went through to get “double o nothing” to spy on me.

Adam: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Billy: You know, you might have got away with it, but sally’s obvious and ridiculous disguise was way too much. You probably want to tell her to stick to wedding dresses.

Adam: Oh, I think you should really see someone about your extreme paranoia.

Billy: We all know what’s happening here, and it all started when sally saw me having a drink in the middle of the afternoon at society.

Sally: I couldn’t help being concerned.

Billy: Concern? That’s why you videotaped me at the coffee house, having a conversation with victoria about my kids going to boarding school? What about when I got in a little argument with lily at society? And you, too. You witnessed it when I got in a fight with lily at the restaurant. I got so upset, I tripped and fell. And what about the time when sally saw me gambling at the empty glass?

Adam: I’m surprised you can remember those occasions, considering the drunken stupor you were in.

Billy: See, that’s the thing. I remember everything very clearly. Because I didn’t have one sip of alcohol. I was stone-cold sober the entire time.

Adam: Right. Right.

Sally: I guess you were too drunk to remember how drunk you were.

Billy: Those are all receipts from everything that I drank. And if you went to every bartender around town, they will tell you that it was apple juice, which is exactly what it says right there. And as far as the gambling, i have a recording where I sat down with my friends at the empty glass and was very specific when I said I am not betting on one single game. I will, however, buy them a drink for their time, which is what you saw when I put money down on the table. It was not a lost wager at all. No benders, no mergers, no falling off the wagon. You witnessed exactly what you wanted to witness.

Adam: Sally, will you please excuse us? I want to finish this with billy alone.

Sally: Billy, I’m genuinely glad that you’re okay.

Adam: So what the hell was the point of this supposed grand charade?

These are the faces

Abby: Are you sure you want to take an indefinite leave from the police force? I don’t want you to feel like i pressured you into this or that I’m dictating your career moves.

Chance: Hey, cut it out, alright? I made this decision all on my own, although you did play a big part in it.

[ Chuckles ] I just listened to what you said the other day, and I want to try to focus all of my time and energy on you and dom. Sure, yeah, I feel healthy enough to go back, but it dawned on me last night — that pull to go back in the force will only take me farther away from you and dom emotionally, and I don’t want that.

Abby: Yeah, I mean, we were apart for so long. And I thank god for every second that I have with you. But…I really want to make sure that this is — this is what you want.

Chance: I am absolutely certain. I know with you by my side, i can conquer this fatherhood thing.

Abby: Well, my strong, brave, dedicated husband…

Chance: Oh.

Abby: …You can always count on me. I might not always have the answers. I mean, I’m still figuring this parenting thing out. Every day is a step forward or a step back, and it’s trial and error. And we are gonna struggle through the strained peas and the dirty diapers, but we’re doing this together. And that’s what matters.

Devon: You know, you really didn’t have to come and check on me. I appreciate it, but I’m fine.

Lily: Well, I’m glad I did. I’ve been worried about you. I mean, I know that you’ve grown more and more attached to dominic, and then nate told me that you’re thinking about talking to abby and chance about revisiting your agreement.

Devon: I did more than think about it.

Lily: What happened?

Devon: They shot me down. They were both completely against the idea, but they told me I can still see dominic whenever I want, just on their terms.

Lily: Well, I mean, what more do you want? You already have free access to him.

Devon: Yeah, it’s deeper than that, though.

Lily: How?

Devon: Because when he stayed with me, I realized that I want more than just occasional visits with him. And I’m worried about his wellbeing.

Noah: Hey, kid. What are you up to?

Faith: Reading. You should try it sometime. Might make you smarter.

Noah: Oh, you’re hilarious.

Faith: I’m waiting for moses, who I think went someplace with elena, even though he insisted that’s not what he was doing, which was weird.

Noah: And now your head is spinning and you’re coming up with a bunch of scenarios.

Faith: Yeah. I mean, why would he lie to me?

Noah: Just stop, okay? You’re gonna drive yourself crazy.

Faith: That’s not what I’m doing. Moses and I are totally solid. We talk all of the time. We like all of the same things. We’re happy, and he makes everything better.

Noah: And…?

Faith: [ Sighs ] I still worry. I mean, things go wrong. People hold back the truth. I mean, think about our parents. Things you never expect to happen happen.

Noah: Yeah, I know. And you’re not wrong. But you got to be strong enough to roll with the punches, even if it doesn’t go your way.

Faith: How do you know if you’re strong enough?

Noah: You don’t, not until it happens, and when it does, you either suck it up or you fall apart.

Faith: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Come on, adam, keep up. Put the pieces together.

Adam: Well, from where i stand, all I’ve seen you do is publicly humiliate yourself, so I don’t know what you’re gloating about, billy. I mean, unless you are drunk right now or you’re pretending again. So which one is it?

Billy: Once again, not a sip of alcohol. What you’re not understanding here is that you’ve been played, and you were so desperate and stupid that you took the bait.

Adam: And what the hell did you think convincing me you were drunk would accomplish?

Billy: I fed you exactly what you were hungry for. I played the part that you were dying to see — the downward spiral of billy abbott. It was only a matter of time before you and newman media published an article splashing the headline everywhere. Which is when I was gonna turn the tables on you, sue the pants off you and your company for defamation, leaving you with nothing.

Adam: Huh.

Billy: But, of course, I’m a generous guy, so I was gonna offer you mercy, only if you came clean and admitted what you, victor, and ashland did to me and my company. It was karma clapping back, adam, and you did not see it coming.

Adam: Hmm. It’s not a completely terrible plan. But you do realize that you shot yourself in the foot. You were supposed to wait until I published something nasty about you to reveal your hand.

Billy: I changed my mind. I’m not going down that path anymore.

Adam: So you quit before you accomplished anything. Huh. That’s on brand for you.

Billy: Actually, adam, i finally realized that you’re not worth it. You’re not worth my time. You’re not worth the space in my head. You’re — you’re really not worth anything to anyone. You will always be the runner-up newman, the epic failure, two steps behind all the time. And I realize that I can’t really bring you down any further than you’ve already brought yourself over the years.

[ Sighs ] And as much as I would love to stick around and watch you embarrassing yourself, trying to explain this to your daddy, I got a life to live.

Adam: Not much of one anymore.

Billy: You know, adam, I’m gonna get over what you did to me, and I will redeem myself on my own and you will continue to sit there wallowing in the truth of who you really are. Knowing that I could’ve took you down and I didn’T. And that’s gonna haunt you more than if I actually did.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Sally: Is the coast clear?

Adam: Billy is gone.

Sally: Good.

[ Sighs ] I hope that you will give me a minute to apologize. I’m really sorry that I got busted by billy. I had no idea that he was onto me or all that drinking and gambling was a part of some big performance.

Billy: Well, how could you? His act was pretty convincing.

Sally: Yeah, I don’t know what all that was about anyway, and I don’t know if I want to know. But despite your tortured history with billy, you admitted to me that you take no satisfaction in seeing him relapse, so, I mean, this is good news, right?

Victoria: Oh, well, I’m glad you finally decided to respond to my messages. But it didn’t require an in-person visit. A phone call would’ve been sufficient.

Billy: Not with what I have to say to you.

Victoria: I hope you’re here to tell me when you plan your next move with adam.

Billy: I’ve already done that, but it’s not what you’re expecting.

Victoria: What are you trying to pull?

Billy: I went to the empty glass earlier, and I was ready to pull off another repeat performance. And as I sat there waiting for my audience to show up, I was struck by a lot of thoughts swirling around my head.

Victoria: Well, you know that bar has never been the healthiest place for you to begin with.

Billy: Mm. I don’t disagree with you. And maybe that’s why I was hit with the realizations that then knocked me sideways.

Victoria: I’m not liking the sound of this.

Billy: I went to adam. I told him everything. I told him that I’m walking away. I’m out. As of right now, I’m done.

Lily: Are you telling me that dom might be in jeopardy?

Devon: No. No, I think that — dom is fine. The problem is chance because he’s still recovering from losing his entire team in that explosion. And I feel horrible for him, but he needs time to heal from it, and it’s taking away from his ability to be a father.

Lily: Yeah, but is that just your opinion?

Devon: No, it’s not just my opinioN. I talked to him about it. He told me that. He said very clearly that he’s struggling.

Lily: Wow, I really feel for everyone involved.

Devon: I know, and I’m not trying to condemn what he’s going through or blame him for his feelings, because i understand where they’re coming from.

Lily: But?

Devon: But I can’t help feeling the need to protect dominic from the emotional turmoil in that house, and it’s the same thing that abby was worried about when she left him with me.

Lily: Okay, so she’ll understand where you’re coming from.

Devon: She might have if i would’ve handled things differently. ‘Cause all I did was piss her off by asking her for visitation. And I don’t know how to get her to understand that I’m just — I’m trying to do what’s best for dominic and what I think is fair to me. I know you might feel differently about this because mackenzie carried the twins.

Lily: No, no, no. Look, I get that they’re separate issues. I do. So you might be surprised to hear me say this, but…I agree with you. I think you have a right to be a protective presence in dom’s life. You try to stay ahead of the mess

Victoria: So why don’t you tell me exactly what you said to adam?

Billy: I told him everything. I laid out the whole plan, except for your involvement and your desire to take over newman media. I told him about my boozeless drinks and the fact that I did not wager a single penny that whole entire time, that it was a carefully orchestrated scheme to force his hand. And let me tell you, it felt good. It felt good to look him in the eye and tell him that I’m walking away because he is not worth it.

Victoria: So, you had a mini moment to gloat. Tell me, billy, was it worth it?

Billy: Yeah, you know what? It was, because me taking the high road is not an easy step.

Victoria: Why don’t you be honest? If not with me, then at least yourself. That’s not the real reason you dropped the plan.

Billy: Oh, yeah, what do you think it is?

Victoria: You couldn’t stand that I commandeered your idea, that I’m the one calling the shots. It’s driving you crazy. That’s why you decided to now have a glorious change of heart after all the years of rage between you and adam and all of the — the chaos that he’s caused. Now that I have a stake in it, you’ve decided to pretend to act rationally.

Billy: You’re giving yourself too much credit, victoria.

Victoria: I know you too well. This is just another one of your knee-jerk reactions. It’s symptomatic of a long history of inconsistency, and i will tell you, this is why you will never have what it takes to play in the big leagues.

Billy: Well, now, thank you for supporting my emotional development.

[ Door opens ]

Ashland: Oh, what’s going on here?

Victoria: You were right. I was foolish to count on billy.

Billy: It’s nice to know how much faith you both have in me.

Victoria: He’s suddenly decided that he wants to bail on our plan.

Ashland: Mm. Well, frankly, I’m relieved.

Victoria: You know, I realize that once we do take control of newman media, it would’ve been a huge mistake putting someone so unreliable in charge.

Billy: Yeah, yeah, especially if that’s the moral that you’re taking away from this story.

Victoria: Well, what am i supposed to take from this?

Billy: You know, vick…the people that are closest to me, the people that actually cared about me, they were worried about this plan, given my history. They actually had my best interests at heart, not their business’S. Look at you, huh? You have your selfish priorities firmly in place. And it makes me sad to say this, but your father would be extremely proud of you.

[ Door slams ]

Faith: It’s been a while. Guess moses isn’t coming back after all.

Noah: Why don’t you just text him instead of making these random assumptions?

Moses: Faith, you’re still here. I thought you would’ve left.

Faith: Of course I waited for you.

Moses: Hey, noah.

Noah: Hey, bud. Good to see you. I was actually just leaving. What’d I tell you?

Faith: Where did you go?

Moses: You know, I still felt weird that you got me this great gift, and I just got you a book.

Faith: But I love the book.

Moses: Yeah, but still, i wanted to get you something else, so you can look at it and think of me, since I have this sweater and I think of you.

Faith: Oh, my gosh. A charm bracelet with little chess pieces.

Moses: I thought it was a good reminder of when we first met and played chess in the hospital.

Faith: Be honest — did elena pick it out?

Moses: [ Chuckles ] No, it was all my idea. I just needed her help in how to find it in town, and I lied about going with her because i didn’t want to ruin the surprise.

Elena: They are so adorable.

Noah: So innocent, wholesome.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, you know, it’s funny. We met at one romantic event — victoria and ashland’s wedding — and here we are witnessing another.

Noah: Well, I-I wouldn’t go that far. I mean, they are cute, but, you know, they’re just kids.

Elena: Hey, you can’t knock young love. It’s just as important, even if it doesn’t last forever.

Noah: Yeah, sometimes us adults can’t make it last forever either.

Abby: You have really become an expert at this whole car seat thing. You can get dom in and out of there without even a whimper. I haven’t mastered that yet.

Chance: He may not have whimpered, but daddy sure let out a few cries there.

[ Both laugh ] Plus, he’s just not scared of it anymore, isn’t that right, buddy?

Abby: Well, hey, it’s like i said before, it’s all part of the learning process — for babies and their parents. Why don’t you two get settled in? And I’m gonna go check in with pamela.

Chance: Okay. Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey, what do you say? Look at me. Oh, oh. Yeah, daddy’s a funny guy, huh? Oh. Oh. Here I come. I’mma come in there and get you. Here I come. I’m gonna get you.

[ Laughs ] Yeah. Oh, that’s fun, isn’t it? That’s some fun stuff. Yeah, you’re just too cute, aren’t you? People everywhere living with

[ Door opens ]

Billy: I am really glad that you’re home.

Lily: If your good mood has anything to do with your plan, i don’t want to hear it.

Billy: I think you’re gonna want to hear what I have to say. I’m done. It’s over.

Lily: What’s over?

Billy: I went to adam and i told him everything, and it felt amazing. And it feels like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Lily: What about victoria?

Billy: I told her, too. And she wasn’t happy about it, but if she wants to go after newman media, she’s gonna have to do it on her own. She’s not gonna use me.

Lily: I’m really proud of you.

Billy: Well, the lion’s share of the credit goes to you. I’m just grateful that you always have the courage to tell me the truth, even when I don’t want to hear it, and the patience, hoping that it’ll sink in. And it did. And I just — I love you so much, and I am just so happy that you are in my life.

Lily: Oh, I love you, too. I do. And, look, I know this is a huge step for you, and I know it’s huge for our relationship, but I’m not worried. I know you’re gonna land on your feet. I know you’ll find a new career path.

Billy: Yeah, speaking of that, I think I already have one.

Lily: You do?

Billy: Well, if the offer still stands, I would love to come and work with the savviest, smartest, coolest ceo I know.

Lily: Who is that? ‘Cause you happen to know a few sharp ceos.

Billy: I do, but there’s only one that I actually want to work with. I want to be there for you, to support you, to be your wingman, because this is your time and i want to be a part of it.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Adam. This is for the best, right? I mean, thank god billy’s entire life isn’t just totally imploding right before our eyes. And now that you don’t have any dirt on billy to incite a war, there’s nothing that can come back to bite our company in the butt. Come on, adam, please say something. I mean, we have to look at the bright side of this, right?

Adam: I thought you said that you were done spying on billy.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I don’t remember deciding that specifically because, based on our last conversation, I thought you were going for more plausible deniability.

Adam: Mm. Well, then this time, let me be clear. The spying is done. No more trying to score extra points with the boss. Go focus on the job that you are paid to do.

Ashland: I truly hope that you didn’t let billy’s words get to you. Your ex obviously has no clue what it takes to get ahead in the world. You can’t do it by backing down when things get tough.

Victoria: You know, I refuse to waste any more time thinking about billy.

Ashland: Alright. So tell me, how would you like to proceed?

Victoria: I still want to acquire newman media. We just have to figure out another way to get it.

Ashland: Well, I have no objection to that. In fact, I think I suggested that to you a little while ago. But we still have to contend with victor, as well as adam.

Victoria: I know, I am aware of that. But I actually have a way that i might possibly get my father on our side.

Amanda: Hey.

Devon: Hey. Didn’t expect you to be back so soon.

Amanda: Yeah, I forgot my laptop. I just came home between client meetings. Is everything okay?

Devon: Um…after I had a long talk with lily, I went to society and saw chance and dominic there.

Chance: Oh, dom, look out, it’s a lion!

Abby: [ Laughs ]

Devon: And I think I’m gonna need to book some time with you after your client meetings.

Chance: Oh, I’m trying.

Devon: ‘Cause I made up my mind that I want to pursue legal rights to be with my son.

Chance: Yes, we are.

Abby: [ Laughs ] Look at that little smile.

Chance: Look at that little smile.

Abby: Well, I am happy to report that you are officially magic.

Chance: Oh, yeah? What’d I do?

Abby: Playtime with daddy went so well that Dom was tuckered. I mean, he fell asleep as soon as I put him down.

Chance: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, he had a good time or, you know, at least it seemed like he did.

Abby: Of course he did! He was spending time with his dad.

Chance: Yeah, well, there’s a lot more to being a good dad than acing tummy time.

Abby: Parenting has a steep learning curve. Look, there’s new challenges every day. I’m always wondering what’s right. Most of the time, I am just faking it. I mean, I have my own questions and fears.

******************

Rey: You know, you keep spoiling me like this, I’m gonna have to add extra time to my workouts.

Sharon: That wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Rey: Oh, really?

Sharon: Oh, I know a good way you can work off extra calories.

Rey: Tell me more.

Chloe: Wow. Looks like someone broke in and had a party.

Adam: Very funny. I was just working late.

Chloe: Really?

Adam: Yep. If the success of the platform means I have to put in some overtime, I’ll do it, ’cause it’s important to strike while the iron’s hot. Now’s the time to line up more ad sales and sponsors.

Chloe: Good answer. Though it’s a little hard to believe your nose was to the grindstone, given the caviar, the bottle of the vodka, and two glasses.

Adam: Chloe, I don’t need to explain myself to you, okay

***************

Victoria: You had a spectacular New Year’s Eve. Wow. Well [Clears throat] I would’ve thought that spending the holiday without Nick, you know, it would’ve been hard, given that you’ve just broken up and, I mean, it was my brother’s birthday. Guess you move on pretty quickly, don’t you.

Phyllis: I’m resilient.

Victoria: Hmm. Well, you didn’t spend the evening with Jack because I know he’s out of town. I wonder who you did spend it with. Maybe Amanda. Mm, although Devon probably wouldn’t have wanted you tagging along. Oh, Lauren and Michael. They let you be their third wheel, didn’t they?

Phyllis: When I was talking about my spectacular evening, i was referring to the hotel. We actually killed. We did very, very well. You know, I wasn’t here because I was having, you know, a fabulous dinner, but the feedback was great and it made me realize that all of my hard work has paid off. You know, our rooms are booked, the ballroom was packed. I had to hire more masseuses, and a number of women enjoy their time at the escape club.

Victoria: Oh, yes, well, I can see how some women might want to usher out a bad year and start off the new one with an escape fantasy. But I’m not one of those women because 2021 turned out pretty well for me.

Devon: Now, how do you just keep getting more beautiful?

Amanda: [ Laughs ]

Devon: How’s that work?

Amanda: Well, all of the credit needs to go to my hair stylist, but she’s also the reason why I’m a little late.

Devon: Oh, you are definitely worth the wait.

Amanda: Oh, New Year’s Eve is really bringing out the sweet talker in you, huh?

Devon: Oh, you’re bringing it out of me. All you. And that’s all I want tonight to be about — just you. No legal work, no family drama, just us dancing to jazz music in the ballroom and me showing you how much I love you.

********************

Sharon: Well, you know what would make the New Year even better? As if you and I just spent more time together.

Rey: Mm.

Sharon: The two of us.

Rey: Mm, I think we can make that happen.

Sharon: And some travel would be good, too.

Rey: Yeah. I’d like to get down to Miami again.

Sharon: Yeah, we should do that before the spring because I’d love being in the hot weather knowing everyone back here is in the freezing cold.

Rey: Mm, no argument here.

Sharon: We should take a trip in the fall, too. Maybe Europe.

:Rey Oh. Okay. I like that idea. Tell me what else is on your list.

Chelsea: And thank you for the gift you sent him. Oh, my gosh! Chicago Blackhawks jersey. Wow. I mean, he put it on as we’re opening gifts and he’s yet to take it off.

Rey: Well, I’m glad he liked it.

Chelsea: Yeah, yeah. Connor’s really into hockey these days, so it was perfect. Very thoughtful. Thank you.

Rey: He’s a great kid.

Chelsea: He is. You know, Connor worships the ground you walk on and he thinks you walk on water.

[ Chuckles ] As leery as I am about Victor having, you know, as much access to him as he wants, it’s really comforting to me knowing that you live close by.

Rey: Well, he seems to be doing well. I saw him getting in some practice on the ice with Noah the other day, and, you know, he may be new to the sport, but he’s definitely got some skills.

Chelsea: Oh. Says the guy from Miami.

*****************

Mariah: You are not gonna win this one, Tessa. She’s determined.

Sharon: I just want everything to be perfect for you.

Tessa: I mean, it is — perfect size, perfect location.

Mariah: Complete access to the best coffee in town and close to you.

Sharon: Sounds like you’re trying to butter up your landlady.

Mariah: We were thinking more like… grandma.

Phyllis: Hey. Are you back on work mode after the holiday?

Nick: Just a quick meeting.

Phyllis: Ah.

Nick: I see you in boss mode, too.

Phyllis: No, I mean, hotels don’t close during this time, so, anyway, I didn’t have any time off. That was fun, our video chat with Summer and the gang.

Nick: Yeah, well, it was pretty clear Harrison liked your Christmas gift the best.

Phyllis: Oh, no. You know, it’s not a contest. But if it were, I’d win.

Nick: I’m actually wearing the gift you gave me right now.

Phyllis: I know. I smelled your essence. So don’t expect a birthday gift from me. I didn’t plan that far in advance.

Nick: I will lower my expectations, yeah. Besides, I gave myself the best birthday gift ever. I’m gonna go and see Summer.

***************

Victoria: Why do you want me to think the worst of you? Are you trying to make me feel guilty because you lost your job? Is that what’s going on here? Because, if so, that’s the most passive-aggressive thing that I’ve ever witnessed. Not to mention it’s completely ineffective.

Billy: Well, you’re onto something there. It’s damn near impossible to get a Newman to feel guilty about anything. It’s like the empathy gene skipped a few generations.

Sharon: It’s a slow night.

Noah: Yep.

Sharon: People usually come here for hot chocolate or coffee after skating and shopping. I mean, where are they all? This place is usually packed before Christmas.

Noah: Absolutely.

Sharon: Of course, I did sell those eight carrot cake muffins to the portly gentleman wearing a red and white fur coat. He was buying them for his reindeer.

Noah: Oh, well, that’s good.

Sharon: I’m so glad you’re home, Noah. You know, I was getting tired of you ignoring me in London. Now you can just ignore me right here in Genoa City.

****************

Sharon: Are you sure you can’t be pulled away from your computer for a moment to talk to your family?

Nick: Yeah, Noah, you can continue to ignore us. I mean, we are just your parents. I’m sure you have other — actually, you don’t. We’re it. We’re your parents, man.

Noah: Come on, stop, stop.

Sharon: Well, we’re here. We’re ready to bond with you.

Noah: Oh, yeah? You guys have important information you want to share? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure you were talking about carrot cake muffins before dad walked in.

Sharon: Oh, so you were listening a little.

Recap written by Eva

Nick returns from Milan determined not to get involved in Newman family drama.

Nick asks Noah to come and work for him instead of taking the job at Newman Media.

Abby tells Devon that she and Chance have decided not to change the original visitation agreement because it would confuse Dominic when he gets older and also interrupt Chance’s efforts to bond with the baby. Devon isn’t happy, but he doesn’t want to go to court and sue for custody like Amanda keeps encouraging him to do. Devon is confident that since Abby and Chance told him he can see Dominic anytime he will spend a lot of time with Dominic.

Abby is concerned that Chance wants to go back to work too soon since he has been discussing active cases with Rey. Abby is unaware that Chance asked Rey to talk to Paul and try to persuade him to let him return to work.

Chance: No, that’s so different. Are you kidding me? I watch you with dom, and I’m just always in awe of how instinctively you respond to him. It’s so special.

Abby: Hey. You are being hard on yourself. Look, I know that your connection with him is just gonna grow, and you guys are gonna be just as close. Dominic is gonna get older, and you guys are gonna start doing guy things together, like playing catch and running around.

Chance: Yeah, hope you’re right.

Abby: No. I know I’m right. We just have to focus on our family and growing that connection with dominic. I have faith in you.

Chance: Well, thank you for believing in me.

Abby: I love you. We’re a team.

Chance: Mm. Well, then we need to put our heads together. We have to make a decision about devon’s request to play a bigger role in dominic’s life.

Amanda: That is not a work face. You thinking about dominic?

Devon: I just can’t get over how abby and chance reacted to me wanting to spend more time with him.

Amanda: Yeah, I know. I’m sorry.

Devon: It’s like they treated me like I was attacking their parenting skills.

Amanda: Well, in their defense, your request, it probably came as a huge shock. This is a complicated situation, devon. I mean, there’s a lot of emotions involved.

Devon: Oh, yeah, there certainly are, ’cause they got very, very defensive.

Amanda: I’m sure that they did. But they also know that you’ve been there from the very beginning. Okay, you were the one who volunteered to be the donor that they needed to make that beautiful baby boy. Right? And you were also the one who helped them track down the guy who kidnapped mariah. You were there when he was brought into this world. You saw him take his first breath. You have been a part of this child’s life. He has a life because of you. They know that.

Devon: Well, they’re my friends and you know what I’m up against, so what do you suggest that I do?

Amanda: Well, what was the last thing that you told them?

Devon: I told them that we can talk about it when they’re ready to. Is that not the right move?

Amanda: I get that you’re trying to give abby some time to process things, but you decided to put a pin in the conversation as soon as things got tense.

Devon: I — yeah, ’cause I-i felt like, if I pushed, you know, for them to make a decision, that would jeopardize my future with dominic or our friendship. So I don’t know what to do, and I would love your honest opinion. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Amanda: Well, I think that what you’re asking for is perfectly reasonable. Do not let this go.

Sharon: Fresh out of the oven.

Nick: Don’t get up. I brought gifts.

Sharon: Hey. You should be the one receiving gifts, not giving them. Happy belated birthday, and welcome home.

Nick: Thank you. I hope christian wasn’t too much trouble for you guys.

Rey: You kidding? We loved having him. What’s in the bags?

Nick: Whoa, no, no, no. Some of the best chocolates, pastries, and cheeses you will ever experience.

Sharon: [ Laughs ] I can’t wait.

Rey: Who says we have to?

Nick: Hey! Buddy, hands off the merchandise. Come on.

Sharon: Speaking of sweets, faith says it is not officially your birthday until she gets to make you a cake.

Nick: I agree with her. Just tell her to pick a day, and I’ll be there.

Rey: How was your trip?

Nick: Amazing. Best present I’ve ever given myself.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Breathing deeply ]

Noah: Chelsea?

Chelsea: Sorry. It’s been a day. Already.

Noah: Everything okay?

Chelsea: I’ve been looking up these breathing exercises you can do in order to reduce stress. I’m thinking about asking adam to turn one of the offices into a peaceful space.

Noah: “The breathing room.”

Chelsea: Yes. I like it already. I envision myself spending a lot of time there. Unless something changes.

Noah: Is there anything going on at newman media I should know about, you know, before I get in too deep?

Chelsea: Oh, you know, just office politics. It’s always something, right?

Noah: Considering who you’re working for…

Chelsea: Your uncle.

Noah: Your ex. I’m not surprised there’s politics. You guys have a lot of history. And now sally spectra’s in the mix, too, so…

Chelsea: Do you know her?

Noah: No, no, not well. But she and adam seemed pretty close at the wedding in tuscany.

Chelsea: [ Breathes deeply ] I just heard something amazing!

Noah: I really hope I didn’t hit a nerve.

Chelsea: It’s okay. It’s not your fault.

Noah: Look, I am no fan of sally’s and I’m only recently on speaking terms with adam again. I figured he deserved another chance after what he did for faith. So tell me, how bad are things at newman media?

Chelsea: I’ll save you a cushion in the breathing room.

Noah: Great. Yeah, now that I signed on, I’m wondering if that was the right thing to do.

Chelsea: Because of adam?

Noah: No, that’s only part of it. I’d also be jumping back into a family business that I thought i needed to escape.

Chelsea: What made you come back?

Noah: [ Chuckles ] That is the million-dollar question. I don’t know. Maybe — maybe I wanted to figure out if I was running away from gc for all the wrong reasons. Is trying to prove I’m nothing like my corporate suit relatives a good enough reason?

Chelsea: You’re an artist. You’re cut from different cloth.

Noah: Yeah, but did I have to move across the ocean to prove my point?

Chelsea: Well, london has other things going for it besides being victor-free. You got your freedom. You’re able to spread your wings, make a name for yourself.

Noah: Things in london didn’t really turn out the way i thought they would. You know, maybe that was karma’s way of showing me I shouldn’t have run away in the first place. Who knows? Maybe I should my last name to the test. Jump into the viper’s nest at newman media.

Chelsea: Well, I hope you don’t see me as one of those vipers.

Devon: I just can’t stop kicking myself for not taking your advice when we were originally drawing up the agreement. ‘Cause all you were trying to do was help me protect my rights from the get-go, in case, and i was so sure that nothing would go wrong.

Amanda: Yeah, but the baby was just an idea back then. Not this living, breathing child who’s staring back at you. You had no idea that your feelings were gonna change this way.

Devon: Yeah, you did.

Amanda: Well, my sole concern right now is you. I hate seeing you hurt like this.

Devon: I just — I don’t think that I should push abby any more, given how upset she got.

Amanda: Turned into mama bear, huh?

Devon: It’s amazing how just one little life can change everything.

Amanda: Dominic never changed you.

Devon: Don’t think so?

Amanda: No. Just amplified everything that was already in there. Your love, compassion, strength. All the good things. Your heart has always been in the right place. You just want to make sure that that little boy gets all of the love that he deserves. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Okay?

Abby: Maybe when devon said it was a bad idea bringing up shared custody, that we should just forget about it. I mean, maybe he thinks that we shouldn’t make any changes to the agreement.

Chance: Yeah, that’s — that’s one possibility.

Abby: Well, what do you think?

Chance: I don’t think he’s backing off. He probably thought talking about it right then and there was a bad idea, so he hit the pause button. I mean, which was the right move. He didn’t want to cause a scene right in the middle of crimson lights.

Abby: I didn’t take it that way.

Chance: But wanting to spend more time with dominic, I — i don’t think that’s something that’s gonna change, abby.

Abby: Okay, but, I mean, i have to tell him something. What am I gonna say?

Chance: Uh…I don’t know. But this sense of limbo is definitely unsettling, I’ll tell you. I mean, after everything devon’s done for us and dominic, we just need to tell him where we stand, be honest.

Abby: Yeah. I mean, he’s been amazing with dominic. And I can’t imagine how devon’s feeling. It doesn’t take long for our son to grow on people.

Chance: Yeah.

Abby: And mariah went through something similar. I mean, she got very attached to dominic, and, well, she just had to take some time away, and then it brought her some — some relief, some peace. I mean, maybe the same thing will happen for devon.

Chance: And if it doesn’t?

Abby: Then we do what’s best for dominic. That’s our job as his parents.

Chance: Yep, yep, yep.

Abby: And we were just talking about how important it is, now that you’re home, we’re together as a family, that you’re gonna be the best dad that you can be. Any disruption in that, that would just be weird. Babies need stability and consistency. Dominic needs to know that we’re there for him, always, to meet all of his needs. When he cries, we hold him. When he’s hungry, we feed him. I mean, and spending more time at devon’s place, the older he gets, I mean, any sort of ambiguity, I mean, that would just be confusing. He needs to know that this is his home. We are his parents.

[ Sighs ] I mean, we can’t change the agreement.

Chance: But devon can still come visit any time he likes. He needs to know that.

Abby: Yes, yes, but any changes to the legal visitation, I mean, shared custody? That’s not gonna happen.

Chance: [ Sighs ] He’s gonna be disappointed.

Abby: I know, and I’m sorry about that, but we are coming at this from a place of love. For our son and our family. You don’t know how much pressure you put on your septic system.

Sharon: So tell us why milan was such a gift.

Rey: Oh, it had to be the food.

Sharon: Or was it seeing summer and kyle?

Nick: It was all of it. The change of scenery just really allowed me to figure out some things.

Sharon: That’s so great.

Nick: Summer is doing awesome. She and kyle have built a great life there. Marchetti loves her. Harrison is speaking italian like a native.

Sharon: Wow. Well, sounds like summer’s really coming into her own. Hey, when are we going to milan?

Rey: [ Chuckles ] You know, I would love to pursue this topic of conversation — thank you, nick — but right now I got to go talk to chance.

Sharon: Oh, okay.

Rey: We shall revisit later.

Sharon: Yes, we’ll talk about this later. So, something seems a little different about you. You seem more relaxed.

Nick: I am. You know, I took a long look at summer’s life, and I realized that the distance from the family has allowed her to grow and challenge herself.

Sharon: Did she say that?

Nick: She didn’t have to. I can see it in her. The freedom from the familiarity has done wonders for her, and it’s made me realize that being a newman shouldn’t define any part of who I am.

Chance: Thanks for meeting me like this, man. I know you’re a busy guy.

Rey: Yeah, but I always got time for my old partner. What’s up? You made it sound important.

Chance: Well, I might have oversold it a little bit. But it is important to me, at least.

Rey: Alright. Lay it on me.

Chance: I’m ready to get back to work.

Rey: I thought you were taking more personal time.

Chance: Yeah, I know, and i know I’m supposed to take things slow and ease back in to the workflow, yeah.

Rey: And the last time you spoke to the chief, he was a little reluctant.

Chance: Well, that’s where you come in handy, partner.

Rey: [ Chuckles ] Okay, I see. You want me to convince him that you’re ready.

Chance: That’s why you’re the second-best detective around.

Rey: Ahh.

Chance: Come on, man. You clearly need me and my skills. Let me put them to good use.

Rey: You sure you’re ready to sign back up for fighting crime, bad coffee, and long nights?

Chance: It’s what I was made for.

Rey: What about abby and the baby? I know how important it is for you to reconnect with them.

Chance: Come on, man. You know abby. She’s more than supportive. Enough about me. Fill me in on this case you’re working on. I’m all ears.

Amanda: What do you think about lasagna? Or I can pull out all the stops and I can make my famous duck dish. Or the salmon and grits that you like. Hmm?

Devon: Sounds like you’re trying to distract me with food.

Amanda: Distract you? Hmm, why would I do that?

Devon: Can you do that? You’re more than welcome to try.

Amanda: Yeah?

Devon: Yeah.

[ Knock on door ]

Devon: Are you expecting somebody?

Amanda: Oh, no. Stay right there.

Devon: Okay.

Amanda: Abby, hi.

Abby: I’m sorry for just popping in. Is now a good time?

Devon: Absolutely. Come in, please.

Amanda: I’m gonna head out. I’m — I got to grab some things for dinner, so I’ll be back, okay?

Devon: Okay. I love you.

Amanda: Love you, too.

Abby: I’m sorry. I probably should’ve warned you that I was stopping by.

Devon: It’s completely fine. You’re always welcome here. Can I get you anything? Drink or…?

Abby: No, no, I’m good. Thanks.

Devon: Yeah. I’m glad you’re here, ’cause i wanted to apologize for how tense everything got last time we talked. I didn’t mean for that to happen at all.

Abby: No, I’m the one who’s sorry for the way I reacted.

Devon: Mm, it’s okay.

Abby: I actually — I want to thank you for giving chance and I some time to think it over and talk about it.

Devon: Yeah, of course. We’re — we’re all friends, and I don’t want that to change.

Abby: You’re more than just a friend. We both know that. And I am eternally grateful for everything that you’ve done. You’ve gone above and beyond. That’s just who you are.

Devon: You know, I would do anything for dominic.

Abby: I know that, and I know that you love him deeply. But chance and I, we have decided…we’re not gonna make any changes to the visitation agreement. Dominic has a home with his mother and his father. I always had a connection to my grandfather…

Devon: Okay. Um…abby, I hope that this is not a misunderstanding, ’cause i am not trying to take chance’s place as dom’s dad. That’s not my intention at all.

Abby: And I hope that you know that dominic is adored by his mother and his father. He will have a supportive family the rest of his life. We’ll make sure of it.

Devon: Yeah, okay. So what are you trying to say to me?

Abby: Devon, you are always welcome in our home, but…we don’t want anything that might be confusing to dominic right now, especially since chance is trying to make up for the time that he lost with his son.

Devon: Well, I’m not asking for anything that’s gonna get in the way of that. I just want to spend more time with dominic.

Abby: Do you remember when we talked about creating a child?

Devon: Of course.

Abby: That’s when we all sat around and we created boundaries, and chance and I, as dominic’s parents, think it’s important to adhere to those.

Devon: Yeah, I hear what you’re saying, but you realize that when we started this journey, we had no idea of what path we’d end up on, right?

Abby: Right, I mean, I was certain that chance would be by my side for most of the pregnancy.

Devon: Yeah, and then he wasn’t for the whole time.

Abby: I would give anything for chance to have been home before dominic was born, but i guess we don’t always get what we want.

Devon: Yeah, no, I guess not.

Abby: And when I thought that chance had died in that explosion, that he might never get to meet his son, I… I’m very thankful that you were there to help me through that.

Devon: I wouldn’t have had it any other way, abby.

Abby: But chance is home now, and my family is together. Dom’s dad has been through hell, and it’s important for him to connect with his son. He needs time to bond with him. And I refuse to let a single thing disrupt that. I hope you understand.

Rey: 30-year-old male, never late for work, dependable. Leaves his home to get in his car for the 10-mile drive to his office. No one’s seen him since then.

Chance: You check airports?

Rey: Yeah, rental cars, trains, everything.

Chance: Passport?

Rey: At home.

Chance: Debit, credit cards, anything?

Rey: Hasn’t been used since the night before he disappeared. There’s no blood or struggle at his home, and his friends have all been interviewed.

Chance: Significant other?

Rey: Yeah, that’s when things start to get interesting.

Chance: Okay, hold on. Give me a second.

Rey: You alright? You need to take a break there?

Chance: Are you kidding me? If we’re gonna solve this thing, I got to take some notes.

Rey: Ooh.

Chance: Alright, one more time, from the beginning.

Rey: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: I know I’ve had this awakening before about my family, but like they say, every time I think I’m out, they pull me right back in.

Sharon: So you’re still trying to find a way to be free.

Nick: I thought I was able to accomplish that with a career change or just trying to keep them out of my personal life, but I realized that’s just surface stuff, you know? It’s not something I felt deep down in my gut or in my mind. Um, but this time, it feels like it’s true and complete and profound.

Sharon: Well, I’m proud of you.

Nick: Before you begin your round of applause, there’s something I need to admit to you.

Sharon: Oh, no. What did you do?

Nick: No, it’s more like what I didn’t do. I wasn’t completely honest with you when you asked me about that dream I had on christmas eve.

Sharon: Yeah?

Nick: Cassie was in it.

Sharon: [ Gasps ] I haven’t dreamt about her in so long. Tell me everything. How did she look?

Nick: She was beautiful, radiant, and content. I told her how much I missed her. She said that she was always gonna be in my heart and our families. She said that life is about change and that an unexamined life isn’t worth living.

Sharon: Such an old soul. She always was.

[ Sighs ] You know…I’d like to believe that this was really a message from her.

Nick: It was very inspiring. But she wasn’t the only one in my dream. Noah and faith were in there, too. And they told me that I just needed to look inward and to follow my heart, and that my heart is where my roots are, and I just need to allow myself to get back there.

Sharon: What do you think that meant?

Nick: I don’t think they were talking about, you know, the roots of my family tree. I think they were talking about the roots that I’ve created. You know, the ones that I’ve planted. My family — that is the thing that’s going to keep me grounded. Noah and faith and summer and christian. And you. I’ve been emotionally drifting for so long and — and constantly searching, but i finally think I’ve found what I’m looking for.

Wait, oh, yes

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Can you save water running a

less-than-full dishwasher?

Abby: Look, I, um — I know that this is hard to hear and it’s not the answer that you wanted.

[ Sighs ] But please, just say something. Anything. I mean, good or bad, I can take it.

Devon: What’s left to be said? You know how I feel. I know how you guys feel, so there you go.

Abby: Well, if there’s anything that we can do to help.

Devon: Can’t imagine what that would be.

Abby: I know mariah, she needed some space, some distance, so I guess we would understand if you need that, too.

Devon: No, I’m — I’m not going anywhere.

Abby: Good, because we would miss you. Dom’s dad and I, we just — we want to make sure that you know that you will always have an important role in dominic’s life. Always. You’re always welcome. And we don’t want that to change. Dominic’s on a walk with louise right now, but he’ll be home soon if you want to stop by and say hi.

Devon: Nah. I’m okay.

Abby: Okay, well, um…when you want to come see him, dom will be therE. Okay. I’ll see you soon, I hope.

Devon: Yeah, of course.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: How am I part of your grand realization about life?

Nick: Because you are always going to be a big part of my life. But I’m talking about moving forward, and the way I’m gonna do that is by recommitting to my family, by putting my children first.

Sharon: But you’ve always done that.

Nick: I’m talking about even going further. This idea that I have involves noah, and I think it’s gonna be good for him and give him some stability, too.

Chance: Hey, nick.

Nick: What’s up, man?

Chance: How you doing?

Nick: Good. How’s my sister and handsome nephew?

Chance: I’m on my way home to them right now. I’ll send your love.

Nick: Please do.

Chance: Hi.

Rey: Alright, brother.

Chance: Hey, thanks for everything, man. I really appreciate it.

Rey: I’ll see you later.

Chance: Yes, sir.

Rey: So what’d I miss?

Nick: You know what? We’re gonna grab some beers and catch up on all that when you get a chance.

Rey: I’m gonna hold you to that.

Sharon: Are you leaving already?

Nick: Yeah, I got to go talk to noah, but we’ll catch up soon.

Rey: Alright, buddy. Take care, man.

Nick: Yeah.

Sharon: Hey, nick.

Nick: We’ll finish this conversation later, I promise.

Sharon: Okay.

Rey: We’re alone at last. What did I miss?

Sharon: Well, nick had a holiday epiphany about family, and it has more to do with noah, but he didn’t give me any details, so I’m kind of curious.

Amanda: Hello.

Devon: Hey.

Amanda: I can tell that your talk with abby didn’t go the way that you wanted.

Devon: [ Sighs ] YeP. Long story short, she said no to my request. She and chance are against giving me any kind of official visitation outside of their house.

Amanda: What reason did she give?

Devon: Doesn’t want to confuse dominic.

Amanda: Spending time with his godfather is confusing? Now, that’s a stretch. I’ll tell you what’s confusing — having his mother run away to a foreign country without telling anyone where she was going or why. I’m sorrY. Continue.

Devon: Nah, that’s okay. She said that she wants the three of them to focus on bonding as a family, and she’s worried that I will interfere with chance creating a real connection with dominic. And according to her, what I’m asking for is unnecessary ’cause he already has a mom and a dad.

Amanda: You have every right to be angry and disappointed. And you also have options.

Devon: Yeah, what options do I have?

Amanda: You can take legal action.

Abby: How lucky am I that i ran into you and ms. Louise, huh? Huh? And now…I got to take a picture of you because you look so cute all bundled up. Yes, you do. Yes, you do. Who is cuter than you? Let me tell you — nobody is cuter than you.

[ Gasps ] Can you smile for me? Can you give me the smile that you only give mama?

[ Gasps ] Oh. Your little face, it makes everything better. You know who else takes all the sad things and just puts them away, huh? Your dad. If you ever have a problem, you can always go to him. But where is your dad? I did not see his car outside. Should we call him? Voicemail. Hmm. Where did your daddy go? Wet dishes?

Chelsea: It’s brave of you to try to prove something to yourself, but we both know what kind of damage the newmans can cause.

Noah: True.

Chelsea: If you ask me, which you didn’t, my advice to you would be just don’t make yourself miserable.

Noah: Oh, well, being miserable definitely isn’t part of the plan. But if it comes to that, obviously I would — dad.

Nick: Chelsea.

Chelsea: Nick. Hi.

Nick: Wow, you look fantastic. How you doing?

Chelsea: So far, so good. Being back with connor again was exactly what I needed.

Nick: How does working at newman media fit into things?

Chelsea: Well, sometimes you just have to prove to yourself you can do something. And adam and I, we’re just, you know, figuring it out day by day.

Nick: Yeah, it’s good, i guess.

Chelsea: Yeah. But speaking of, I actually have to get work, start some designs.

Nick: It’s great seeing you.

Chelsea: It’s really good to see you, too. Bye, noah.

Noah: Welcome back, world traveler. How was milan?

Nick: It was illuminating.

Noah: Oh, yeah. How so?

Nick: I’ve got some ideas. All I ask is that you keep an open mind.

Devon: I don’t want to take chance and abby to court. It’S…

Amanda: It’s just an option. But let’s look at the facts. This has never been a typical donor situation.

Devon: I know that, but still, that’S…

Amanda: You are close friends with abby. You have been for years. She not only invited you into that boy’s life, but she entrusted you with him when she left the country. That is an indicator that she considers you dom’s de facto father.

[ Sighs ] I mean, she left you a note. She had no idea when she was gonna be home, and you dropped everything to be the father that that boy needed. You rearranged your life. You put your job on hold just to be there for that boy every minute of every day.

Devon: I know, can’t argue with that.

Amanda: So then just at least consider what I am proposing. I can’t make any promises, but there are some factors that are working in your favor.

Devon: The way you’re talking about this, have you, like, researched it or what?

Amanda: No, but having worked on the original contract, I know what we can use to build an argument.

Devon: Well, hypothetically, what would you say?

Amanda: You’re the biological father. You can petition the court for visitation just like many grandparents do with much success. Plus, chance was not there when you signed the original contract.

Devon: Well, does that help us or hurt us?

Amanda: It complicates things, but your legal agreement was solely with abby.

Devon: No, I hear everything that you’re saying, but…I’m not even entirely sure where abby’s coming from in all this. I don’t know if there’s a deeper reason that she’s fighting me or, you know…

Amanda: What do you mean?

Devon: I don’t know. I don’t know if she feels threatened or if she’s trying to protect chance. Either way, the only thing i know for certain is that if i take them to court, it’s gonna affect everybody, including dominiC.

Dominic: [ Crying ]

Abby: I know. That’s how I felt when I had to talk to your godfather. Yeah, so he might not be coming to visit anytime soon. But it was the right thing to do. And how amazing is it that your dad is home and he is safe. We’re all together.

[ Gasps ] And look, there he is. There’s your daddy. Say, “hi, daddy.”

Chance: Well, hey, gorgeous.

Abby: Hi. Are you gonna say hi to your son?

Chance: Yes, I am. Hey, there, buddy. Hey, there, buddy. Are you having a good day? Yeah, ’cause your daddy sure is, right?

Abby: Well, that’s good to hear. I know, I know. We were so worried about you when we got home and you weren’t here.

Chance: Oh, yeah, I’m sorry about that. I was with rey.

Abby: Oh?

Chance: Yeah, yeah, you won’t believe this case he’s working on, abby. It’s — it’s cool stuff. It’s fun stuff.

Abby: Wait. You’ve already gone back to work on the force without telling me?

Rey: Oh, looks like you’re setting up shop here.

Chelsea: I promise I’ll buy a ton of coffee.

Rey: Being cooped up at an office all day can’t be good for your creative energy or whatever you need to sketch.

Chelsea: Ooh, listen to you, sounding like a real design expert.

Rey: [ Chuckles ] What I’m saying is you could probably use a change of scenery, huh?

Chelsea: Oh, you have no idea.

Rey: How’s the new job?

Chelsea: It’s not going the way I imagined. I knew working with adam would present its fair share of challenges, but there are other surprising downsides.

Rey: Like what?

Chelsea: You really want to know?

Rey: Well, I’m asking. I’m interested. That’s kind of how it works.

Chelsea: You know, usually when someone gets poisoned and they encounter the person responsible, they’re not this nice. But look at you, asking me about my job, about my creative process.

Rey: Well, should we talk about the weather instead?

Chelsea: It’s a miracle you’re even talking to me. No one more of a reason to hate me than you. Yet you invited me to join you on your anniversary and new year’S. Here you are reaching out again. You’re a really good guy, rey.

New vicks vapostick. Strong soothing vapors…

Rey: Yeah, I’m not such a great guy. In fact, there are more than a few people behind bars who have the opposite opinion of me. So back to the original question.

Chelsea: What’s bugging me at work that drove me to turn crimson lights into my own personal workspace?

Rey: That’s the one.

Chelsea: I mean, who wouldn’t want to work here, right? The constant parade of people, the aroma of coffee and pastries in the air.

Rey: You know, when I get an answer like that during my interrogations, it usually means a person’s being evasive.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] What’s bothering me doesn’t really matter, you know? There’s nothing I can do to change it anyway. But you asking me about it, especially out of more than just politeness, I appreciate that. Thank you.

Rey: I don’t know why it’s such a big deal.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] I was feeling sorry for myself because I don’t have a ton of people I can talk to these days, so I’m not gonna repay you for your kindness by boring you with my issues. Maybe I’ll take you up on the talking thing some other time.

Rey: Whenever you want. I’ll let you get back to work. What are you smiling about?

Sharon: She’s right. You really are a good guy.

Noah: So let’s hear about these grand ideas that you hatched while you were in milan.

Nick: Some of them relate to you.

Noah: Okay.

Nick: Just tell me, is it too late to talk you out of working for your grandfather and adam?

Noah: Huh. You see, that’s — that’s funny, ’cause last I checked, you said you were supportive of me making my own decisions. Did something change?

Nick: No, you are a man. You can do whatever you want. But I’m still the best father in the world.

Noah: That’s all true. So what’s up?

Nick: Maybe there are greener pastures out there for you.

Noah: Where would that be?

Nick: Right here. Come work for me.

Chance: No, I haven’t put my badge back on yet, I promise. I was just getting the lay of the land, you know, getting a feel for what’s happening since I’ve been gone so that when I do decide to go back, I’ll be caught up, you know?

Dominic: [ Crying ]

Abby: [ Speaks indistinctly ]

Chance: Sorry.

Abby: Well, that’s a relief.

Chance: Yeah, yeah, I mean, i would never go back without talking to you about it. Are you serious? Come on, but I’m not gonna lie, abby, it was — it was nice to get my feet wet again. I mean, rey’s working on this case that’s, like, right in my wheelhouse, right up my alley, so it just got me excited to get my detective skills back to use again, you know?

Abby: Well, I haven’t seen you this excited in a long time.

Chance: I know, I know. It’s the case, abby, it’s just got me pumped. You won’t believe it, it’s this guy, he’s — he’s missing right now, and, uh… well, you know, I’m not gonna burden you with all the details. I’m probably not supposed to talk about it anyways, but I got some theories on my own that i want to put to test when I get back to the force officially.

Amanda: I am not trying to tell you what to do. This is your decision to make, and you know abby a lot better than I do, so…

Devon: Yeah, but I still want your perspective on the situation.

Amanda: Well, it concerns me that chance and abby are drawing a line in the sand. It makes me wonder what their next move will be.

Devon: I don’t think they’re gonna retaliate.

Amanda: Do you know that for sure?

Devon: I mean, abby went out of her way again to promise me I’m always gonna have a place in dom’s life. You know? And at the end of the day, I’m the one who agreed to father their child without any written stipulations on visitation. So that’s — that’s on me. Back then, all I wanted was to just help them start a family.

Amanda: A loving family that you would be a part of. Isn’t that what they said?

Devon: Yeah. I just need to continue being there for dominic, however i can.

Lily: [ Blows noisemaker ]

[ Chuckles ] I’d ask you what’s on your mind, but I think I already know, ’cause I’ve been thinking the same thing. Victoria and her demands.

Billy: Once she was onto us, there was no way to know how she was going to react. I didn’t expect this.

Lily: Well, I’ll tell you one thing, the woman sure knows what she wants.

Billy: Whole purpose of this plan was vindication. To get victor and adam to admit that they set me up.

Lily: Right, that’s the only reason why I went along with this plan to begin with.

Billy: Except now, for victor and adam to do that, they’re also going to have to admit that the allegations about ashland’s past are true.

Lily: Which victoria will never allow.

Billy: And I will not get my opportunity to expose victor and adam as the criminals they are.

Lily: Here’s a thought. Why don’t we just forget about the whole thing? Right? Just forget about the revenge plot. Let’s just move on with our lives.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Lily: Come on, just at least consider it.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Oh. I guess you all had too much fun last night you couldn’t clean up.

Victoria: Phyllis.

[ Clears throat ] I hope you had a wonderful new year’s eve.

Phyllis: Yes, it was wonderful. You know, champagne and dinner. It was spectacular, actually.

Chelsea: I’m surprised to see you up and out so early.

Sally: I could say the same thing about you. Double espresso to go, please.

Chelsea: I had a quiet night at home. Now I’m just killing time while I wait to pick up connor. What about you? Did you ring in the new year in style? With anyone special?

Sally: Ta-da!

Adam: Was the emergency that you ran out of tape for the decorations or…?

Sally: The emergency is that it is almost midnight.

Adam: Right. And we said that we were not doing anything for new year’s eve.

Sally: Right. And as you can tell by the decor, we are not even acknowledging new year’S. All of the other holidays, sure, but there were no rules about that.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Okay, so this is a loophole.

Sally: Yes. But the clock is ticking, and we’re running out of time if we want to not celebrate before midnight.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: Chloe, I don’t need to explain myself to you, okay? Want your clothes to smell freshly washed

Lily: What is so important that we have to meet victoria right now on new year’s day? Like, I don’t appreciate her ordering us around like this.

Billy: I hear you, believe me. I do not like the fact that clearing my name is now in victoria’s hands. But I’ve got to swallow my pride right now and think about the bigger picture. It’s still possible to get vindication if adam comes after me. And I hit him with a libel suit that cripples newman media, victoria takes over their company, and I get to run it.

Lily: What makes you so sure she’s gonna hold up her end of the bargain? I don’t think ashland’s gonna be too keen on you running his former media company.

Billy: I feel like I know victoria well enough to trust that she wouldn’t betray me in that way.

Lily: [ Scoffs ] Right, well, I wish I were as sure as you are.

Billy: Lily, I’ve gone over all the options. This is still the best one.

Lily: Right, and when you say “all the options,” does that include you coming to chancellor with me?

Billy: I can’t do that.

Lily: Why not?

Billy: Because I need to earn that job. Because right now my reputation is in shambles, and if I go work with you at chancellor, it’s gonna feel like a hand-me-down, and I cannot stomach the fact that victor and adam are gonna get off scot free. At least this way it cripples newman media, okay? And they have to suffer the humiliation of watching me run their former company. So I’m gonna go meet with victoria. And I really hope that you come with me.

Phyllis: But, victoria, you can’t — you can’t be serious that you found your dream man in ashland locke, I mean, given all the information that nick found out about him. Okay. Uh, no one’s perfect. Yeah, no one’s perfect. So, anyway, you’re saying that you’re so deliriously happy, but yet, on the first day of the year, you’re here bright and early.

Victoria: Would you please have someone send over a carafe of coffee? Three cups.

Adam: Why are you here?

Chloe: To save you from making a huge mistake that could destroy everything you’ve been trying to build.

Adam: What are you talking about? Newman fashion is doing great.

Chloe: You know that’s not what I’m talking about. Sally and chelsea.

Adam: Okay. Let’s not go there, okay?

Chloe: Well, I wish I didn’t have to, but sally was here last night, wasn’t she? I have been warning her to steer clear of you, but she just won’t listen to me, and I’ve been telling the same to chelsea, but it’s like yelling into a void. So here I am to try to persuade you.

Adam: So you are the voice of reason, chloe.

Chloe: In this case, I am. I need you to stay away from sally and chelsea for your own good. They are ticking time bombs. If you take up with one of them, the other is going to blow up your life, and you won’t have to worry about finding new sponsors or selling ads because your fashion platform is going to implode.

Adam: Okay, that sounds like a bit of a threat.

Chloe: No, it’s a fact. If this work situation turns into a love triangle, I don’t think I’m gonna be able to keep these two women away from each other’s throats. And I, for one, want to see newman fashion succeed, and you would be a fool not to want the same thing, too. We have become one of your most profitable divisions. And it won’t look good if you’re business renaissance crashes and burns because you weren’t able to keep your personal and professional life separate. I would appreciate it if you would take my warning seriously.

Sally: I was with adam until the clock struck midnight.

Chelsea: Working till midnight on new year’s eve.

Sally: Yes, actually. We got caught up discussing some new design ideas, but it was all above board.

Chelsea: Oh, of course, of course. I wasn’t implying anything. Adam made it very clear to me he has zero romantic interest in you, so you don’t have to explain yourself to me. I’m just happy that you didn’t have to be alone on new year’s like you were alone on christmas.

Sally: Thank you.

Chelsea: I’m guessing adam felt sorry for you, too.

Sally: Yeah, yep, yep. Adam took pity on me. I had all this vodka and caviar and no one to celebrate with, so after we finally got done working, he agreed to share it with me.

Chelsea: Nice.

Sally: Mm-hmm.

Chelsea: Well, since I’m here and I’ve got some free time, why don’t you talk me through the ideas you and adam discussed — before the booze and caviar came out. Hey, come here!

Phyllis: Thank you, crystal. Amazing. Look at that. So, victoria, can I get you anything else, like a fruit cup or a croissant? Imaginary friends?

Victoria: Oh, that’s alright, because my party is here. Thank you guys for coming.

Lily: We almost didn’T.

Phyllis: Oh, wow, lookit. Your new year’s resolution to bury the hatchet is already going awry.

Victoria: I ordered coffee, not unsolicited commentary.

Phyllis: Oh. I’ll be right over here.

Victoria: Please, have a seat.

Billy: So, vick, what is so important that you’ve got here this early?

Lily: On new year’s day.

Victoria: I received word that adam is having a meeting here today. I thought that it would be a good opportunity for us to kick this plan into overdrive so that we can get some real results.

Billy: I didn’t know you had so much intention on taking such an active role in this plan.

Lily: And what do you mean by “overdrive”?

Victoria: I just think that we need to stop making this all about how badly billy is spiraling, because it’s old news. That’s why adam has not taken the bait.

Billy: Mm-hmm.

Lily: Okay, and so what do you suggest that we do instead?

Victoria: I suggest that we start pushing other buttons, pinpoint his vulnerabilities, hit him where it hurts. And then he will retaliate.

Billy: Well, I know how to do that. If I’m being honest, I actually enjoy it sometimes, but I didn’t think about how to do that right here, right now.

Lily: Yeah, or why you would be involved.

Victoria: When adam gets here, I’ll set the stage. I’ll go after you for something like not showing up for some holiday thing with the kids before they went to boarding school, and then you can take it from there. You can tell him that he must know exactly what it’s like to be a bad dad.

Lily: Wait, I’m sorry. We haven’t even discussed this. And why does it seem like all of a sudden you think that you’re in charge now?

Victoria: Uh, because I am.

Sally: Well, I know chloe is keen to launch the design part of the business, so I was thinking that maybe we could start off with a line of resort wear, and if we work like crazy, we could get it ready by next season.

Chelsea: That’s a hard market to break into, not to mention a shrinking demographic.

Sally: I think it’s more of a niche, ready for a fresh approach. And we have the attention of people who go on expensive vacations because of my wedding dress design. Yes, the demo is a bit smaller than most, but they spend money.

Chelsea: You make a decent argument, but I’m just not feeling it. What are your other ideas?

Sally: Well, while we are gearing up to design our first clothing line, we still have to feed the beast, so the platform needs content.

Chelsea: What are your thoughts on that?

Sally: I would love to do a feature pairing makeup with different looks, like how food magazines does wine pairings. Like what lipstick goes well with the season’s hottest trends. We could do “lipstick and lingerie” or “does this eyeshadow make my dress look fab?”

Chelsea: Mm, you know, I’m not really a fan of cutesy headlines. I think we need to focus on doing fashion well before we branch off into makeup, so it’s a bit off-brand.

Sally: Honestly, I think you’re being a little too limited in your thinking. The content that I have created so far is what’s made the platform a success, so I think i know what the site needs, especially if I’m gonna be the face of the brand.

Chloe: Hi. I got your text about meeting for a coffee. I didn’t realize sally was gonna be here.

Chelsea: We decided to have an impromptu company meeting.

Sally: Mm-hmm, and she just shot down all my best ideas, including the lipstick pairings, which you loved.

Chloe: Okay, well, I can see why chelsea, at first glance, might want to tweak some of your ideas. All ideas could be made better. So why don’t we, you know, listen to her thoughts and try to incorporate her input? It’ll be a win-win.

Chelsea: Okay, you know what? You can take it from here. I’ve got to pick up connor anyway. We’ll do coffee another time.

Lily: You realize that none of this goes anywhere without billy and me, so I think you can dial back the orders.

Victoria: Oh, come on, don’t be so sensitive. This is my plan now. I mean, hey, look, the pressure’s off the two of you. You can just relax. Adam’s here. Let’s do this.

Billy: Okay, stop. Not so fast. Okay everyone,

Billy: Hey, what are you doing here?

Traci: Well, hello to you, too, billy.

Billy: I’m sorry, traci. I didn’t mean it that way. I just didn’t expect to see you.

Traci: Am I not allowed to be here? Are you up to something you don’t want me to know about?

Billy: Excuse me?

Traci: These are rhetorical questions. Jack has told me exactly what you’re up to.

Billy: Why the hell did he do that?

Traci: Because he didn’t want me to worry that you were wrecking your life again. And I’m actually grateful that one of my brothers thought to include me and put me in the loop. Look, I’m going to leave you with a little warning. I will be keeping an eye on things to make sure that they don’t get out of control, but I am not here to keep tabs on you. I know it’s a shock, but I do have a life. I’m here to make a massage appointment, so please excuse me.

[ Sighs ]

Billy: We need to stand down.

Victoria: Why?

Billy: Because traci knows. Jack told her what I’m up to.

Victoria: Hold on a second. Back up. How did jack find out?

Lily: Because I told billy to tell jack ’cause I thought it was cruel to let his brother think his downward spiral was real.

Victoria: Oh, whereas it was fine for me to believe that you were going off the rails?

Billy: No, but I also knew that I couldn’t trust you with the secret.

Victoria: And yet you felt like you could trust jack? Who told traci? Uh, who else did jack tell?

Billy: Traci is the only problem right now, but it is a big one because there is no one that hates lies and deception more than she does, and if I try something in front of her, she will call me out in a heartbeat.

Lily: Which is why I think that we shouldn’t move forward with this at all. There are way too many variables for this thing to go off track.

Victoria: No, I disagree. Now that I have the tangible goal of getting newman media away from adam, I want to move even more quickly. I’m not throwing in the towel because of one little hiccup.

Lily: Oh, I’m sorry, you’re not throwing in the towel? I mean, you’ve been part of this plan for, what, two seconds?

Victoria: Yes, and you’re just gonna have to accept that because I’m not going anywhere. And honestly, the two of you are lucky that I got involved because billy’s plan was so transparent, I saw right through it. In fact, clearly, you need me to make this work. And if I know billy, which I do, when he gets an idea, I’m guessing that he is not gonna give up.

Billy: Okay, can we just take a breath right now and, you know, put a stop to this next level? Because there is a real possibility that traci could blow this thing out of the water.

Traci: And I would like the works — nails, facial, and a massage.

Phyllis: Okay, that sounds great. You know what? Um…let’s set that up, but it may take a bit.

Traci: Oh, that’s perfectly fine. I’ll be able to relax here with a cup of coffee right by the bar.

Phyllis: Okay, great. Let’s talk to henry. He’s the spa manager, and we’ll get you the best masseuse.

Traci: Thank you. Well, happy new year, adam. Oh, my gosh, I haven’t seen you in ages.

Adam: Hello, traci.

Traci: I’m here for a day of pampering and beauty. How about you? I bet it’s not the exact same agenda.

Adam: Eh, I was supposed to have a meeting, but I don’t think the guy’s gonna show up.

Traci: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.

Adam: Mm.

Traci: Now, in spite of your mishap with your meeting, I hope the new year has brought you happiness and I hope you’re well.

Adam: I am doing pretty well. Compared to some people.

Chloe: So what happened with chelsea and what did you say to her?

Sally: All I did was pitch her ideas, and all she did was tell me that they stink. She’s obviously jealous of me. That is her problem, not mine.

Chloe: What kind of jealousy are we talking about — professional or personal?

Sally: A little bit of both.

Chloe: Okay, I could buy a bit of professional envy. She has been out of the game for a little bit and you’ve been getting a lot of attention, but why would chelsea be personally jealous? You promised me you weren’t going to cross any lines with adam.

Sally: I didn’t cross any lines. Yes, okay, I spent some time with adam last night, but that’s it. I got the sense that chelsea already figured as much, so i thought that it would be best to just tell her. But I assured her that it was strictly work.

Chloe: You promised me that you were gonna stop chasing adam and you were gonna focus on your work. So what, have you been lying to me?

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Sally: I promise you, nothing happened with adam last night. It was not a date, and I went to great lengths to make sure that was crystal clear.

Chloe: Yeah. Nothing says work like a bottle of vodka and caviar.

Sally: How do you know about that?

Sally: I stopped by the office to tell adam that he was playing with fire when it comes to you and chelsea. I am just at my wit’s end with all of you. I have done everything to try and deescalate the situation, but you just won’t listen to me. So am I going to regret trying to make things work between you and chelsea?

Sally: I think you’re overreacting. Yes, there’s a rivalry, little bit, between me and chelsea right now, but it’s gonna affect our job performance. If anything, it’s gonna push us to be even better.

Chloe: You know, I wish that I could believe that. If I thought that you were just trying to get ahead, I would chalk it up to the drama of working in fashion, but that’s not all it is. Do you have actual feelings for adam that you can’t let go of?

Sally: This is not high school. I am not trying to steal your bff’s boyfriend. Alright, so why don’t we just put the personal stuff aside and focus on the business? I have to get back to the office to rework some of my ideas that chelsea just torpedoed.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Traci: I can’t help noticing that you keep glancing at my brother.

Adam: Hmm. I assure you that I plan to steer clear of billy.

Traci: Well, that’s good, because I have no illusions you two will ever be friends, but i think you can keep a safe and civil distance.

Adam: You really do see the good in everyone, don’t you? I like that about you, but unfortunately, not everyone is good.

Traci: Yes, I know that. But I hope you’re not saying anything specific about billy.

Billy: Oh, no, it was just a general observation.

Traci: I’m glad, because my brother has fought his way back from the same kind of darkness that you have embraced.

Billy: I’ve done my best to change.

Traci: Oh, I know, and what you’ve done for faith newman, just incredible. And you’re in business with victor, that’s a new chapter for you, right? Yeah, but I have a feeling that you like the battle too much. I think you live for conflict.

Phyllis: Traci’s right.

Adam: I could say the same thing about billy.

Traci: [ Chuckles ] Yes, and it would be true. But I’ve given him the same advice. I really hope that you two will just stop. One of my wishes for the new year is that you will drop this feud.

Adam: I feel the same way.

Phyllis: Hey, adam, looks like you’ve been stood up. Maybe you can find your colleague back at your place of business.

Adam: No, I have an assistant and a cellphone, so I’ll be okay.

Phyllis: Yeah, well, you’re fraternizing with one of our guests, and this isn’t just any guest, this is traci abbott, world-renowned author.

Traci: [ Laughs ]

Adam: For the record, she struck up a conversation with me.

Traci: I did, I did.

Adam: Yeah. But I don’t want to incur the wrath of the billy abbott fan club, so I’ll take off. But just wanted to let you know, everything that happened with gaines, it was billy’s fault. He brought it on himself. He’s his own worst enemy.

Traci: You know, for the longest time, people said the same thing about you.

Adam: That is true. That’s why I had to work hard to repair my reputation.

Phyllis: [ Clears throat ]

Adam: And surprising that the two champions of billy don’t see him in a downward spiral. He’s in a tailspin, even if you don’t want to see it. Victoria. What an interesting way to start the new year. It’s odd that you have spent the morning with your ex rather than your spouse. Must be something big to bring you all together like this.

Billy: You know what, adam? It’s really got nothing to do with you. But we are talking about our parenting plans for the kids next break. Totally innocuous. Of course you are going to have your eyes peeled just in case i make another misstep.

Adam: Well, they’re kind of hard to miss these days. I’m getting an early start on my day, too, so I will see you all later.

Billy: See you later.

[ Sighs ] Thank you for not saying anything.

Victoria: It wasn’t the right time.

[ Sighs ] But this isn’t over.

Traci: Hey, thanks for having my back with adam.

Phyllis: Yeah, my pleasure.

Traci: He’s right, you know. Billy does bring a lot of this on himself.

Phyllis: Uh, yes, I did. I understand. We’re a lot alike in that way. Um…you know, I’ve tried to change. I’ve made mistakes.

Traci: Is there something specific you’re talking around?

Phyllis: Um, what does that mean?

Traci: I just happen to know that you were supposed to spend christmas eve with jack, but you never showed up.

Phyllis: I mean —

[ Sighs ] Wow, look at you, you just waltzed in here and made a spa appointment and then decided to drop this bomb. I’m impressed. Good work.

Traci: [ Sighs ] I know that your history with jack is really complicated. So is your present. But one thing is for sure — the two of you are very good friends. That will never change. Especially not because of his nosy sisters. How did olay top expensive creams?

Victoria: I’ll be in touch. In the meantime, I think you need to be on the lookout for the next opportunity to advance our goal.

Billy: Sure, we’ll get right on that.

Lily: Or maybe not.

Traci: Hey, everybody. It’s great to see you all up bright and early, seizing the day and the new year.

Lily: Well, you know, early bird catches the worm and all.

Traci: [ Chuckles ] Yes.

Billy: You know, traci, um, let me just be clear. Victoria knows all about the plan, and she is in support.

Traci: Is that so?

Billy: Yes, and I know that jack is not thrilled, but I’m hoping that you can see this from my perspective and understand that it is harmless.

Traci: All I see is the potential to do a bunch of damage.

Billy: Clearly you have your reservations, but I’m hoping that you’re not gonna say anything to adam or anyone else.

Traci: I don’t know, billy. Come on, I could just blow it any moment. I could explode trying to keep back the truth.

Billy: Thank you for the vote of confidence.

Traci: I’m sorry, honey, but please, why would you do this? Why would you want to engage with adam? Couldn’t you just step back and enjoy your beautiful children, your amazing partner, the blessing of a healthy relationship with the mother of your kids? Come on, billy.

Billy: I have my reasons, which I’m not gonna get into right now.

Traci: Victoria, please, for johnny and katie’s sake, would you rethink this?

Victoria: I always put my children first. And I have complete faith in billy. So, now that we have made our stances clear, I need to get back to the office.

Chelsea: Hey. Am I interrupting something?

Adam: [ Clears throat ]

Chelsea: I’m on my way to pick up connor at his friend’s house, but I just wanted to pop in if you had a minute.

Adam: Yeah, of course. Listen, I’m sorry about last night. I know that you were upset, and I hated having to rush out of there like that and leaving you alone.

Chelsea: Don’t worry about it. I was overly emotional. I think the holidays just bring up a lot of memories for me, and I momentarily got caught up in them, but in the bright light of day, I’m doing fine. In fact, I was thinking we could take connor to lunch, since he’s leaving for school in a couple days.

Adam: Yeah. Yeah, let’s do it. His holiday break has gone by very fast, so we need to grab as much time as we can with him.

Chelsea: Yeah. So did everything work out with your work emergency last night? Should I be worried?

Adam: It was nothing that you need to concern yourself with. But I do have some exciting news for you.

Chelsea: Lay it on me.

Adam: Jack and I were discussing jabot possibly coming on board as a sponsorship for the fashion platform.

Chelsea: Huh. Really? Well, that’s odd timing because I just saw sally spectra, and she pitched me a similar idea. The whole fashion-makeup tie-in. I told her it was a stretch, considering we need to focus on fashion and not spread ourselves too thin with makeup, but now — now it makes sense that you guys discussed it because she was so confident when I told her i opposed the idea.

Adam: We talked about it briefly. But, look, I’m just looking for new revenue streams, so if you think jabot’s a bad idea, I will defer to you and chloe.

Chelsea: Okay, okay, I’ve had enough mind games for one morning, so I’m just gonna come out and say it. I know sally was your “work emergency” last night. She told me the two of you rang in the new year together.

Adam: I don’t know why she felt the need to mention that.

Chelsea: Well, she acted like she was trying to be transparent, but I think she was trying to mark her territory.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Chelsea, I don’t belong to anybody.

Chelsea: I just wish you had been honest with me about why you left my place last night.

Adam: I didn’t know entirely what was going on when I got that text. And, chelsea, you were upset. I did not want to make the situation worse.

Chelsea: I hate that you ended the year thinking that i was such a mess.

Adam: I don’t think that. It’s normal to have a little angst around the holidays.

Chelsea: Well, apparently, according to sally, you two weren’t melancholy at all. In fact, you were brainstorming, coming up with a lot of ideas, being really productive.

Adam: Yeah, yeah, I guess we did do some of that.

Chelsea: Some of that? What, there was more to it?

Adam: [ Sighs ] We ended up watching an old movie, that’s all.

Chelsea: I need to know how serious this is, adam, because i have to work with this woman, so if there’s something going on between the two of you, that’s gonna be a problem for me.

Adam: There’s nothing serious going on between me and sally. And even if there were, it isn’t your concern anymore. You need to let go of the past and move on. My personal life is not your business anymore until it involves connor, and this isn’t like that at all.

Chelsea: But it might be in the future? Sounds like you’re leaving the door open for that. Are you falling for sally spectra? Are you tired of clean clothes that just don’t smell clean?

Adam: Chelsea, we can’t keep circling back to this. I told you, I am not dating sally. So if it’s gonna be a problem for the two of you work together, you have to figure it out.

Chelsea: Fine, I will.

Adam: Good.

[ Clears throat ] Is there something else that you wanted to discuss?

Chelsea: Yes, actually. I have officially decided to sell the penthouse. After last night, I realize it’s too painful for me to live there, and it’s not good for connor either.

Adam: I understand. It’s your decision.

Chelsea: You know, and for the record, sally doesn’t deserve you. I know the type. I’ve seen go-getters like her my whole life. They can’t see beyond what’s in it for them, and frankly, I am shocked that you haven’t been able to figure this out about her yet.

Sally: Chelsea, I thought you were headed off to get connor.

Chelsea: I am. I had to discuss something with adam first.

Sally: Great. Hey, I think I left a file in here earlier. Do you mind if I look for it?

Adam: Go right ahead.

Chloe: You know, you could just come back later.

Chelsea: I’ll see you when we have our date with connor.

Adam: Yep.

Chloe: Chelsea, chelsea. Look, I know that you’re not that happy with me right now, but I am just trying to keep the peace.

Chelsea: Sally is the one putting on a show in there.

Chloe: Well, you two are constantly goading each other.

Chelsea: I beg to differ. I have been pleasant, yet direct, with a woman who works for me. Sally doesn’t seem to realize that I’m her boss. You know, I shot down a couple of her ideas earlier, and she’s being insubordinate because she thinks she has adam on her side.

Chloe: That’s a problem, and we will make sure that it doesn’t happen again.

Chelsea: Well, I know how we fix it. We fire her.

Sally: Chelsea’s a bit moody today, huh?

Adam: Just cut it out. Right now.

Billy: Believe me, I don’t like it anymore than you do, but victoria’s right. We need to force adam into action. Going after him as a father does not sit well with me at all, but exposing his relationship with his dad, that is where adam is vulnerable. I mean, he keeps talking about me falling into old patterns. The amount of times that victor’s betrayed him, he keeps running back to him like a scared little animal. He’s going to fail at newman media, okay? He does everything else. And…[Sighs] You are being awfully quiet. What are you thinking?

Lily: I don’t like this. Everything has changed — everything. Suddenly this is now victoria’s chess game, and you and I are the pawns. Like, I’m not — I’m not doing this. I refuse to let either one of us be used by her.

Victoria: Traci. What are you doing here?

Traci: [ Sighs ] You left before we had a chance to finish our conversation before.

Victoria: I thought that i made my position very clear.

Traci: Oh, you did. But you didn’t give me a chance to articulate mine. This plan of billy’s, it seems to me very dangerous, and if you’re supporting him in this because you’re serving some personal agenda, I am not gonna stand by and do nothing.

Victoria: You know that i have the utmost respect for you, but this is between billy and me.

Traci: No, you know, I don’t think it is. Billy is my brother. I love him and I feel an obligation to do everything in my power to protect him, even if it’s from himself.

Victoria: Well, I think it’s wonderful that you care about billy, but when jack told you what’s going on, I think he painted an inaccurate picture of the situation.

Traci: It used to matter to you, too, to protect billy. I mean, we worked together to help him overcome his gambling addiction. And now, I hate to say it, but i think you’re using him.

Victoria: No, you are underestimating him. Billy and I are equal partners in this. We both stand to benefit if we take adam down.

Traci: Well, I hope that’s true, because if billy suffers at all from anything that’s about to happen, it’s on your conscience.
