Nick: [ Sighs ] Yeah?

Phyllis: Uh…I owe summer a call, and I — I just wanted to know… I mean, did you want to tell her about us or…

Nick: Uh…yeah. Uh… I guess you can handle it. Or I can. Either way, our daughter needs to know that her parents aren’t together anymore.

Sharon: Lily.

Lily: Hi.

Sharon: Hey, I’m glad I ran into you. I was actually planning on reaching out an apologizing for the way I acted last time I saw you. I was not upset with you. Billy’s latest wild accusation against adam is just so frustrating, but I never should demanded that you reel him in.

Lily: Yeah, I don’t really know how to take this half-apology when it seems like you’re still blaming billy. And to be honest with you, i don’t think his accusations are that wild.

Sharon: I hope that billy hasn’t sucked you in to his never-ending vendetta against adam.

Lily: Billy hasn’t sucked me in to any thing. I actually just came from seeing your ex, and I can tell you that he’s the one with the vendetta who needs to be seriously reined in.

Adam: So, you say you want to bring me, my father, and ashland down? Well, you better back up and tell me what this so-called threat’s all about. Exactly what evidence do you have?

Billy: I’ve got the original letter from camilla rhodes’ will proving that ashland stole his mentor’s fortune, the same fortune that he built his empire with, the same empire that spawned this company that we’re standing in right now. And wouldn’t it be a shame to see that all come crumbling to the ground?

Nikki: Adam said he had no idea that their little attack plan was putting stress on ashland.

Victoria: Well, I’m sure that’s how ashland prefers it.

Nikki: Yeah, well, he said it was just business and they had no intentions of hurt ashland or my grandchildren, by the way. I mean, the reality is that they have no idea if it’s going to hurt them or not.

Victoria: Well, I don’t know all of the details, but ashland has assured me that the children will not be affected.

Nikki: [ Sighs ]

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ]

Nikki: How is abby doing?

Victor: Not well. Seems that abby is teetering between acceptance and denial, you know? And she’s determined to do something very risky.

Abby: Mariah, that is very generous of you to offer to watch dominic while I search for chance, but it’s — it’s not necessary.

Mariah: I’m happy to do it. I mean, he needs somebody that he’s comfortable with, and I can move back in here and take care of him.

Abby: No, please. You don’t have to worry about dominic. There are plenty of people who can help watch him while I’m gone.

Nina: Just — no plans have been nailed down yet, so…

Abby: But my plans haven’t changed. I don’t care what anyone says. I am going to look for chance. And if no one will go with me, I will go by myself. At least mariah’s on my side.

Devon: Abby, this isn’t about sides, okay? We all hope that chance is alive, alright? This is about life and death and you doing something stupid. We’re not gonna let dominic risk losing his mother, too. Your heart is at the heart of everything you do.

Victoria: Does she really think that she thinks she can find him when none of the authorities have been able to?

Victor: Yeah. I’m gonna go over there again as soon as I can.

Nikki: Darling, you need to get some rest. This is wearing you out. At least take a break before you go back there. Isn’t ashley there with her?

Victor: Yeah, but she’s exhausted, as well. She needs the sleep.

Nikki: Well, devon and nina are there.

Victoria: And I’m on my way to see her now before leaving for peru.

Victor: Oh, I forgot about that. That’s a very important trip, you know, for both of you. Say hello to ashland, okay?

Victor: By the way, when you do see your sister, please tell her what a foolish undertaking it is to go to the site of the explosion.

Devon: Alright, you know what? Can we just take a breath and let’s think this through together, abby? Can we do that?

Abby: I have thought this through. I have thought this through! In fact, I was gonna ask you if you’d be willing to watch dominic while I’m gone. But you know what? It’s fine if you’re not willing to do that. My son will not be put in danger. I have plenty of friends and family that are willing to watch him.

Mariah: Yes, you do.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: Abby, you know that i would do anything in the world to protect that little boy, alright? You have to do the same thing, though. Do you not see how flying off to look for chance is not in his best interest at all?

Phyllis: I’m alright. Nick couldn’t get away from me fast enough. Well, that’s confirmation it’s definitely over.

Mariah: Abby, I understand where you’re coming from and why you feel the need to go. And I’m not pushing things, but I have no problem moving back in here for dominic’s sake.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Nina: Hi.

Billy: What you destroyed was an authentic-looking copy of the letter.

Billy: I have the original letter. And I have jesse gaines in the flesh, and if you think he was pissed as ashland before, you should see him now after the way he was manhandled in tuscany.

Adam: What is it gonna take for you to get that I’m not buying your story? And neither will victor, okay? Jesse gaines — he’s on a beach somewhere. He’s counting his money and his blessings. And you know what? I suggest you do the same before chanccomm ends up a worthless shell, man.

Billy: If jesse gaines is sitting on the beach counting his money, how do you think i know that he was locked in a wine cellar of a tuscan farmhouse? And just so you know, I can make good on every threat that I’ve uttered here today. So, unless you want to risk upsetting daddy and watching your company being trashed all over the internet, I suggest you make the right choice. You have until 6:00 P.M. Sharon: So, at the end of our last chat, you said you were gonna grab some quiet alone time. Was the productive?

Nick: Um, yeah, I think it helped me accept that my relationship with phyllis is over, and I think phyllis accepts it, too.

Sharon: Ohh. Nick, I’m sorry.

Nick: We just need to face the facts. You know, this time it didn’t end any differently than it has any other time. I accept a lot of the blame for that. I should have been more cautious and understood that the relationship could end like this. I feel really bad for phyllis. It seems like she’s really hurting.

Sharon: And you?

Nick: I’m alright. Um…it’s not easy, but I’m determined to not wallow in heartbreak.

Sharon: Good. Because you shouldn’T.

Jack: After what just happened with nick, if you need some time alone, I get it. But if you could use a friend, I’m happy to join you.

Phyllis: I could use a friend, definitely, as long as we don’t talk about nick or the break-up or anything like that. Let’s focus on positive things.

Jack: Okay.

Phyllis: Okay.

Jack: Okay. Shoot.

Phyllis: Um, well, the grand phoenix — you know, we’re doing so well. We’re going to expand.

Jack: Interesting. What does a bigger and better grand phoenix look like?

Phyllis: Well, I’ll tell you. Um, the rooftop pool — I’m thinking of putting, um….

Jack: Phyllis —

Jack: Phyllis, stop. You don’t have to do this. It’s me. Look, even if we don’t talk about nick, you can be miserable around me. I think our friendship can handle that.

Phyllis: I know, and you’re my friend! You’re my friend, and it’s okay that you’re my friend. I know that. Oh, we were doomed from the start, nick and I.

Jack: Wait, wait, wait. I wouldn’t say that.

Phyllis: Oh, yes! I had my reservations, but I let nick talk me into it, and i believed it was worth a try. But I should have followed my instinct. I should have followed my gut. I knew. I knew, and I fell into this trap again.

Devon: I’m very concerned about abby’s state of mind. And we need to figure out a way to keep her from going on this trip.

Nina: I’m not sure what else we can say to persuade her not to go.

Mariah: Poor dominic. He’s probably absorbing all of this tension. I’m gonna go check on him.

Nina: Wait, mariah, no. I just got him to sleep, and his schedule has been off the last few days. I don’t want to risk waking him, okay? But believe me — he’s alright. There’s no reason to worry.

Mariah: Yeah, of course. Um, you know, I’m gonna go take care of some things in case i need to come back here. So just text me if you need me.

Devon: Of course.

Nina: Okay.

Mariah: Alright. Bye, guys.

Devon: See you.

Nina: I don’t think it’s a very good idea for mariah to move back in here, given, you know, her attachment to the baby.

Devon: Yeah, no, I think it would be a horrible idea if she did that. It wouldn’t help anybody.

[ Dominic crying ]

Nina: [ Sighs ] I know that cry. It’s just fussiness, but… it just breaks my heart to think about what the poor child’s lost.

Abby: I know if I go to the explosion site I can find out what actually happened to chance.

Victoria: I’m sorry. I mean, I understand the impulse of needing to do something, but don’t you think it makes more sense to leave it to the experts?

Abby: No, the experts have failed. And the — the more time that goes by, the trail — it’s just gonna get cold.

Victoria: But this is a very volatile situation. How do you know that the people in spain are gonna agree to talk to you about any of this?

Abby: Look…chance could be out there. He could be hiding. He — he could be hurt somewhere. And I know that I am the only one with the sheer force necessary to find him. So, are you gonna let me use the jet or not?

Victoria: I’m sorry, abby. I just — I don’t think it’s a great idea.

Abby: Fine. Fine. I’ll call dad. He’ll let me use the jet.

Victoria: Our father doesn’t think it’s a good idea, either.

Abby: Why are you all ganging up on me? Why are you all fighting me on this? Them I can understand, but you — you are my sister. You’re supposed to be on my side.

Victoria: I am on your side. That’s why I’m saying no.

Abby: You of all people. You should understand how important this is for me because you’re also looking the& death of your husband in the face.

Abby: I know that you’re fighting to keep ashland alive, no matter the cost, the risks of the treatment. It doesn’t matter. You’re doing whatever you can to save his life. And that’s what I’m trying to do for chance. I just want to fight for him. Why — why shouldn’t I? Why wouldn’t I?

Victoria: Because, abby, maybe in your heart — maybe — maybe you know there’s nothing to fight for.

Abby: No.

Victoria: Look, I know you don’t want to hear this. I know that. And I don’t want to say it, but it has to be said. Going there to try to figure out what happened — I mean, it’s just going to compound the hurt. And you’ve already had enough of that, don’t you think?

Abby: [ Crying ] That’s why i want to go there — to end the pain.

Victoria: This day is coming for me, too. When I lose my husband… when I lose ashland, I know what I’m gonna need and what I’m gonna want, and that’s to have my family around me to support me and to hold me up no matter what. So home is where you need to be right now, so that you can lean on us and so that we can just — we can wrap you up in our arms.

Abby: [ Sniffling ]

Mariah: So, abby is determined to find out what happened to chance firsthand.

Tessa: Oh, my heart is just breaking for her.

Mariah: I know. Me too. For abby and for dominic. I’m worried about him.

Tessa: Oh, well, why? I mean, you know he’s gonna get taken care of.

Mariah: Well, maybe he could be taken care of by me.

Tessa: What do you mean?

Mariah: I offered to move back in if abby goes to look for chance.

Tessa: Mariah, do you think that’s a good idea?

Devon: It’s just, the more erratic abby becomes, the more worried I am because it’s like she’s spiraling out of control.

Nina: I know. I’m worried about her, too. These massive mood swings — they’re concerning.

Devon: I just don’t get how she went from what I thought was accepting the truth to wanting to leave her child behind and fly out to prove that chance is alive.

Nina: Well, I’m not gonna lie. I know how she feels. It’s everything I’ve got not to jump on an overseas flight. I’d love to just hold him in my arms again, you know, and look in his eyes and…tell him that his mother loves him and that we’re gonna be okay.

Devon: I know. To know that you will never be able to see somebody that you love again is the worst feeling in the world.

Nina: There’s just so much left undone, you know? I want to tell him that the son that he and abby dreamed of is here and he’s beautiful and perfect and deeply loved. But I can’T.

[ Voice breaking ] And it weighs on my heart. And it’s so sad. It’s just… losing a child is so unfair.

Devon: When somebody dies before their time, it’s unfair to everyone that loves them.

Nina: Oh, devon, I’m so sorry.

Devon: Why?

Nina: You’ve lost so much in your life — a wife and a baby that you never even got to meet. I — I know you understand.

Devon: I certainly do. But, you know, what I went through in my experiences doesn’t compare to being left a single parent with a little baby to raise.

Nina: It’s just so tragic. And I know it was a mistake to even consider going with abby. But at the moment, it seemed like the right thing to do, like the only thing to do, and I know that’s how she feels, the imperative to bring her husband back, to bring back the father of her child. Just all these months of waiting, and this is how it ends? Well, no wonder she’s bouncing around the stages of grief, the denial, the anger, the bargaining, back to denial. But it’s real. Chance’s death is real.

[ Gasps ] Oh, god.

[ Sighs ]

Lily: Hey. How’d it go with adam?

Billy: Well, his first response was to call my bluff.

Lily: Well, that’s not surprising. Did you think he would cave that easily?

Billy: No, probably not. But I had to make sure that he knew that I have him in a no-win situation. I had to ratchet it up a little bit, so I put him on a deadline — 6:00 P.M. Tonight.

Adam: Dad, I finally reached you.

Victor: Sorry, son. I’ve been with your sister.

Adam: I know. Um, how’s abby doing?

Victor: Unfortunately, not well. So, how’s our project going, by the way?

Adam: Billy showed up here, true to form. He acted as expected.

Victor: Okay. Well, let’s discuss that in person, alright?

Adam: Oh, and, um, nikki came by earlier.

Victor: Oh, she did?

Adam: She is worried that our plan might be too taxing on ashland.

Victor: I see. Um…I’ll deal with that. Talk to you later. So, my baby, I understand you went to see adam, expressing your reservations about the project he and I are working on?

Nikki: Yes, I did. I didn’t want to bother you while you were so upset about abby. I was just concerned about ashland. I don’t think that he needs any additional stress right now with his illness.

Victor: I understand your concern. But rest assured that we will finish the project without ashland’s support, okay? But there’s no way anyone or anything will stop us from pursuing it.

Phyllis: My relationship with nick was a big trap. It was a big trap. I knew it wasn’t gonna work, but he convinced me it was.

[ Exhales heavily ] It’s that family of his. He’ll never change because his family will not allow him to change. That’s the truth. I can’t take it. They have secrets from him, and you know victor. He just twists things around, and then nick just goes running back to mom and dad, like he always has done, like he always will do. You know this. You know this better than anyone. I can’t take that viper’s nest of a family that he has. But it’s their loss, you know? It’s their loss and it’s nick’s loss because the newmans — you know this — they eat their own.

[ Sighs ] I broke my own rule about talking about nick.

Jack: Oh, I wouldn’t — i wouldn’t say you broke it. You maybe smashed it to smithereens.

[ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: You’re laughing. You should be afraid.

Jack: Oh, I think we’re past that. I know how hard you love. I know you love to win. Losing connection with nick at the same time as…somehow feeling that you failed is not a good combination for you.

Phyllis: I failed.

[ Scoffs ] I’m a failure. It was a break-up.

Jack: It was a break-up. We broke up. And I would never in a million years say we shouldn’t have tried. This is life. This happens. We find someone. We fall in love. We have good days. We have terrible days. We spend day and night together, and sometimes — not always — it ends. And we pull apart, and it hurts. And we feel regret and misery and —

Phyllis: Listen. This is a pep talk. I’m — so, I mean, honestly, I’m about to crawl into a dark hole.

Jack: Hold on. I’m not finished.

Sharon: So, what can I get for you? Coffee?

Nick: Actually, I came by for some of those little mini cinnamon cakes. I, uh, am gonna go see abby. I know those are her favorite. You know, don’t you? Who told you?

Sharon: Mariah called. Actually, at her request, I went and spent some time with abby to try and help her cope.

Nick: How’s she doing?

Sharon: It’s a very difficult time for her.

Nick: I just hope abby understands why I haven’t been by to see her. Nobody in my family bothered to tell me about this. It’s just another example of my father controlling the narrative. You know, I’m not gonna — I’m not gonna do this. I’m not gonna make this about him. I’m just gonna do everything i can to help abby through this. I really appreciate you going by to see her.

Sharon: Grief can be so tricky. It’s difficult for anyone to navigate.

[ Dominic crying ]

Abby: Oh. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. It’s okay. It’s okay. Come to mama. It’s okay, baby boy. Okay. Mommy’s here.

Nina: Yeah. Okay. Oh, my goodness. Okay. Okay. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Oh, dear.

Abby: [ Sobbing ] We do it every night.

Mariah: I would just be moving back in with the baby because it’s an emergency situation.

Tessa: Look, I totally understand the circumstances, but…you’re still getting over your own trauma.

Mariah: You don’t think I’ve made any progress?

Tessa: Yes, I do. But that’s my point. I would hate to see all this forward motion just totally wiped out. I think it’s a little soon for you to take on full-time care of dominic.

Mariah: Just when I think that we’re in sync again, you say something like that.

Tessa: Look, I — I don’t want to fight about this, but let’s please — let’s please not go back there.

Mariah: I just want to make sure that he’s okay.

[ Dominic crying ]

Devon: Hey. What happened?

Victoria: Well, I actually think I was able to talk abby out of making the trip. But she’s furious with me.

Devon: Well, I hope that you did ’cause I don’t know what else we can say to her. She’s entitled to have mood swings, but it’s a problem when it’s around the baby like this.

Victoria: Well, I won’t disagree with you on that, but it looks like abby has a long way to go before she recovers from this.

Abby: [ Sobbing ]

Phyllis: I certainly hope this inspirational talk gets a lot brighter soon, please.

Jack: All I’m trying to say is, despite the pain and the regret, this was not a mistake, not the trying, not the loving, and not the breaking up.

Phyllis: I was a failure. Please. A complete and utter failure. Come on.

Jack: It’s an ending. That’s all it is. It’s not an indictment of you or nick or what you two shared. Don’t ask me how I know this, but I know it for a fact. Love with someone… who wants the best for you… is never a mistake. Eventually, it brings you more than it costs you.

Phyllis: So, to be clear, falling for nick again — that doesn’t make me a failure?

Jack: No. Not at all.

Phyllis: And I’m not an idiot?

Jack: You are anything but an idiot.

Phyllis: And I’m older and wiser, right? Older.

[ Chuckles ] So it’s not gonna be that hard this time?

Jack: You will be happy again, red. That I promise you.

Phyllis: Alright, then.

Phyllis: Clink.

Nick: Uh, I appreciate your concern, uh, but if you’re implying that I’m grief-stricken over my relationship with phyllis, that is not the case. Uh, if anything, I just feel a little foolish, kind of like i mistook chemistry for something more permanent.

Sharon: Well, I wouldn’t beat yourself up about that. The two are easily confused.

Nick: Well, thank you.

Sharon: For what? These?

Nick: Uh, no, but also for these. Uh, just for not going the, you know, “I told you so” route with phyllis, at least not to my face.

Adam: How you doing?

Victor: Uh… concerned about abby.

Adam: Well, I can certainly understand that, but I can see that losing chance has gotten to you, too. Is there anything that I can do to help?

Victor: Well, now, his loss must have affected you, as well. You once were friends, right?

Adam: Yeah, we always had each other’s backs when it counted.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: I saved his life in vegas, and then, um, he took a bullet for me here. I always thought the guy was indestructible.

Victor: All I can tell you is that whoever is responsible for his death — they’re gonna pay.

Adam: Well, count me in. But, uh, while your fleet of investigators take on that job, we have some pressing business to finish here at home.

Victor: Yeah. We’re gonna take care of billy boy.

Lily: So, what do you think will happen next?

Billy: I would like nothing more than that phone to ring and that sob to surrender and admit defeat.

Lily: You think that’s a possibility?

Billy: I wouldn’t bet on it. And you know what that means coming from me. Either way, the time is ticking, and things are about to get very interesting.

Nina: Hi, devon.

Devon: Hey.

Nina: Come on in.

Devon: Thank you.

Nina: I’m so glad that you’re here.

Devon: Of course. I just wanted to check on you guys. Were you able to get any sleep at all?

Nina: Yeah, off and on.

Devon: Yeah.

Nina: You know, it’s been real quiet, so that was nice. Abby’s still in her room. I think she finally got some rest.

Devon: Good.

Nina: And ashley and victor stayed over, so…

Devon: Oh, nice, nice. Is there any news about chance?

Nina: Cricket is on the phone with a contact from the state department.

Christine: I understand, and I appreciate it. I — yeah, just keep me informed, will you? I’ll be at this number all day. Okay. Thanks. Hi, devon.

Devon: Hey. Morning, christine.

Nina: So, any news about my son?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Abby: Hello, everyone! Ooh, good. Someone made coffee.

Devon: How you doing, abby?

Abby: Mmm! I am gonna grab a cup of this. Mm-mm-mmm. And I have a few things to get done. First I need to book the newman jet, and if that’s already spoken for, I’ll fly commercial.

Nina: Whoa, wait a minute. What are you talking about? Fly where?

Abby: Well, I intend to figure out what happened to my husband, why he hasn’t contacted me. Is [Chuckles] That a problem?

Christine: Abby, I don’t mean to be blunt, but that is the worst thing you could do.

Abby: Well, the state department hasn’t contacted me telling me that they found him or his body, unless there’s some information that you haven’t told me yet.

Christine: The spanish authorities are still working through the rubble, along with our people from the state department. I know there’s no official word on chance, but that doesn’t mean you go off —

Abby: It means that maybe chance wasn’t in that building when the bomb went off. Maybe he’s hurt. Maybe he’s hiding. Look, now that I know where that safe house is, I’m gonna fly to spain, and I’m gonna piece together what became of my husband.

Christine: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: So, when do you and ashland leave for peru?

Victoria: We’re shooting for this afternoon. The pilot’s on standby, but it just feels like there’s so much going on all at once.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Your father’s still at your sister’S. He spent the night there.

Victoria: I’m still in shock over the news, mom. My heart just goes out for poor abby.

Nikki: It’s terrible. Victor is so concerned.

Victoria: You know, I spoke with her on the phone first thing this morning, and I’m gonna stop by there. I’m gonna see how she’s doing before we leave for the airport.

Nikki: I know she’ll appreciate that. But you must be overwhelmed, too. How is ashland doing?

Victoria: He’s very determined to get into this experimental treatment program, although we’ve only gotten as far as the initial evaluation, but it’s just — [ Sighs ] There’s so much riding on this.

Nikki: I know.

Victoria: But for now, we are going to remain positive.

Nikki: Well, your father and I are praying that they’ll accept ashland into the program and it’s the answer that you’ve been looking for. But, darling, is there anything else on your mind?

Victoria: You know, dad and adam are going after billy and chanccomm. I don’t know any of the details, and I really don’t want to.

Nikki: I thought you were on board, in theory.

Victoria: I was. It’s just that I didn’t know that it would cause so much stress for ashland.

Nikki: I didn’t realize he was involved.

Victoria: Well, he’s insisted on being kept in the loop. And now he’s angry at billy all over again for dragging gaines to tuscany to try to ruin our wedding. With everything that we’re facing right now, this is just beyond counterproductive.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] I am so sorry to hear this.

Victoria: It’s just the last place that he should be putting his energy right now.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] It’s a terrible situation for you — your father versus the father of your children. I know you would never say this…

Victoria: But?

Nikki: Billy’s done it to himself.

Lily: I didn’t know it was casual day.

Billy: I won’t be going into the office until later. I’m gonna go to the motel and check on our guest.

Lily: You mean your guest, not ours. I want nothing to do with gaines.

Billy: Lily…

Lily: No, if you think I’ve changed my mind about your little plan, then you can think again.

Billy: Can we talk about this, please? I think it’s important that we’re on the same page.

Lily: There’s nothing to talk about. If you’re gonna move forward with blackmailing newman media, then I want no part of that.

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Oh. I know that look. I’ve had that look on my face a lot lately.

Noah: Yeah? What look is that?

Mariah: The one where you don’t want to lie, but you also don’t want to bare your soul about what’s going on.

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Christine: Abby, I have been in constant touch with my contacts at the state department. In fact, I just got off the phone with one of them.

Abby: And what were you told?

Christine: They are committed to getting answers.

Abby: In this lifetime?

Christine: The agents who are working on this are so familiar with that area of spain, as well as the criminal organization behind the bombing. I mean, they are a large group of experienced operatives from both the local jurisdiction and the U.S. They will get to the bottom of what happened to chance and everyone else in this mission.

Abby: Eventually. But what if chance is out there? What if he’s hurt? What if he’s out there hiding? I mean, I can’t just leave him to fend for himself when he needs me the most.

Christine: This group of agents are so good. They’re gonna take care of it.

Abby: They don’t share the same connection with chance that I do, the kind where you just know things about the other person.

Nina: Like if they’re dead or alive.

Abby: Exactly! And it’s that connection that will not allow me to believe that chance is gone, the way that you all do.

Devon: Okay. Hey. Abby, what has changed since yesterday?

Abby: [ Sighs ] Look, I woke up this morning, and I — I realized that I am just going along with someone else’s version of what went down. It’s like I’m giving up on chance. Years ago, we mistakenly thought that chance was dead. Nina and I even went to his funeral. But it turns out that he was faking his death for an investigation.

Nina: The media has confirmed the explosion and that there were casualties.

Abby: I have to follow my instincts. Every fiber of my being is telling me that chance is still alive.

Victoria: Thank you.

Lily: Why are you letting this escalate into a war?

Victoria: What are you talking about?

Lily: Well, your father told billy to his face that he’s coming after chanccomm, which means billy, and you’re just gonna let that happen?

I’m jimmy dean and uh,

Victoria: I am focused on my husband’s health right now. I’m also overseeing a major merger of two corporations, so i have my hands full with more important things. I’m not involved in this little plan of theirs.

Lily: Right, and I should just take your word for it.

Victoria: Since when does billy have you fighting his battles for him?

Lily: Well, they’re coming at him through chanccomm, so that makes it my battle, as well.

Victoria: Well, I don’t know what you expect me to do about it. I’m not involved, as I said.

Lily: Look, clearly your dad wants to hurt billy, and he has his own thoughts on how to handle things, whereas I would prefer a more direct, above-board approach.

Victoria: What does billy have planned?

Lily: Look, I was hoping that you would be able to use your influence to stop things before they get ugly.

Victoria: You know what it sounds like? It sounds like you’re upset about more than someone potentially making a run at chanccomm. It sounds like billy’s being billy and that has created a little conflict between the two of you.

Lily: Well, I thought since you and ashland have a business connection, you would know the difference between a conflict between lovers and an opposing point of view between business partners.

Victoria: If this is so important to you, why would you come to me? Why don’t you just go to the source?

Lily: You know what? You’re actually right. I’m wasting my time with you.

Noah: Yeah, you nailed it.

Mariah: I figured.

Noah: Some stuff happened in england that I haven’t really wanted to talk about. I know the family’s been speculating, though.

Mariah: Oh, yeah. We’ve been making bets. I think that you are banksy, the mysterious artist, so… but seriously, I mean, if you need to talk to somebody…

Noah: You know, it’s really not that interesting. Between the two of us, it’s — it’s a love thing. I’ll get over it. Now, if you want to tell me what you can’t say to other people, you can.

Mariah: Well, um, I’m kind of also going through a love thing, but with dominic. You know, every time I’m away from the baby, it feels like it’s been years.

Noah: I’m sorry.

Mariah: It’s okay. It’s better than it was, but it’s still not easy.

Noah: I can only imagine how tough this is for you. How about we run it off? I mean, it probably won’t work, but we could pretend like it will.

Mariah: Yeah. That sounds like a great idea. I’ll race you.

[ Both laugh ]

Devon: Abby, it’s not giving up on chance to acknowledge that he was a part of a dangerous operation where things went wrong.

Abby: Things did. But my heart is telling me that chance survived, that he is still with us.

Christine: [ Sighs ] I just don’t think you understand what you would be walking into.

Abby: Well, what I do know is that the official view is that chance died in that explosion. So, how hard to you really think the state department is looking for him? Let me tell you — not hard at all.

Christine: No, abby, that’s not the —

Abby: And I also know that if I go there, if I go talk to those people, they’d be much more willing to talk to me, a concerned wife, than an agent from the U.S. Government. I could be able to get answers that these federal agents can’T.

Christine: What you are suggesting is so incredibly dangerous. You would be putting your life at risk, possibly your family.

Abby: Christine, I need to go there. I need to see where it happened.

[ Sighs ] If there’s even the slightest chance that my husband could be out there, that he wasn’t in that building, I need to pursue that. I am doing this. Can you please tell me where my father is? He needs to talk to victoria so I can arrange to get on the newman jet.

Nina: Your mom and dad went for food for when you wake up. They’ll be back soon.

Abby: Fine. Will you please let me know when they return? I’m gonna go pack.

Devon: So, what the hell are we gonna do to stop her from going?

Nina: Maybe we shouldn’T.

Nina: What abby’s decided to do — I don’t know. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea, going to the place where this happened, seeing for herself. I’d even be willing to go with her.

Christine: [ Sighs ] Nina, it would be so traumatic for you.

Nina: But maybe it’s what abby needs just to come to terms. I mean, maybe it’s what we both need.

Devon: Nina, I think that that might be true for you, but not abby right now, not — not considering the 180 she just made overnight. I don’t think she’s in a very strong emotional place. You know? I think that if you went, you would be going to find closure and make peace with what’s happened.

Christine: Whereas abby is reacting impulsively. She’s made up her mind to do this horrendously risky thing with almost no discussion.

Devon: Exactly, and what worries me more than anything is that she’s ready to fly off to someplace she’s never been before and ignore everything we’re saying about how dangerous it is, and she never mentioned dominic’s name, not one time. He’s not even factoring into her thinking right now because she’s so fixated on this idea that chance is alive and she’s the only person that can find him.

Christine: Who knows how she’d react when she’s standing in front of the ruins of that safe house? It is an active crime scene.

Devon: Yeah, no, and we don’t need to find out how she’s gonna react. As abby’s friend who loves her and who cares about her, I’m not signing off on this. I can’T. And I beg of you — do not go along with this, too.

Christine: The last thing we need to do is encourage this. Abby would be putting herself and her family in grave jeopardy, including her infant son.

Billy: There’s some fresh clothes, some toiletries, some food and some plates and a kettle. Make yourself some coffee or tea.

Gaines: Well, look at you. You thought of everything.

Billy: Trying to make sure you keep a low profile. I don’t think you want victor or anyone working for him seeing you out and about.

Gaines: Right. Got it.

Billy: Now, I am still looking into your story about how you escaped from tuscany. You still claiming that that’s all true?

Gaines: Listen, I took one hell of a risk coming back here. I could have just as easily disappeared again.

Billy: But you didn’T. So, why?

Gaines: Because I got a goal in mind — taking down the almighty ashland locke and hitting back at the people that are trying to keep his past buried and shut me up — his new family.

Billy: Well, in order for that to happen, I’m gonna need the letter from camilla rhodes.

Gaines: Mm.

Billy: The original one explaining that she’s leaving nothing to ashland in her will.

Gaines: Don’t worry. It’s in a safe place.

Billy: It’s not in my hands. And it needs to be.

Gaines: Ohh, easy, easy, easy, not so fast. I need to know your plan first. I need to know how you are gonna use it to maximum benefit. Are you gonna write another one of your sensational exposés, tell the world how despicable he really is?

Billy: When the time is right. It’s in the process of being written right now.

Gaines: The hell kind of answer is that?

Billy: It’s an honest one.

Gaines: Let’s get something straight. I am not gonna settle for any vague reassurances. You are not gonna placate me that easily. Do you understand? And I am not taking a single step forward unless I am absolutely certain that I can trust you.

Billy: That’s funny. I feel the exact same way about you.

Adam: A design competition? Well, that’s an interesting promotional idea. Uh, tell me more.

Chloe: Well, we would publicize it in a fashion design program all over north america. Or worldwide. Depends on budget.

Sally: Although anyone 18 or older is free to enter.

Chloe: And then we’ll publish the winners of each level of the competition on newman media website.

Sally: Yeah, and there will be different categories for you to enter your designs. We have sportswear, cruise wear, men’s wear, bridal.

Adam: What kind of prizes are we talking?

Chloe: Well, I was thinking for the grand prize of each division, an all-expenses-paid trip to new york fashion week.

Sally: Including an interview at a top fashion house. It’ll really pull the students in.

Chloe: I mean, listen, we need to do our research, but i think that, with all of our contacts, I think we could really make it happen. So, if we could just —

Lily: Hello. I’m sorry to barge in, ladies. I need five minutes of your time.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Um, we can pick this up later.

Lily: So, adam…

Adam: Mm-hmm?

Lily: …Tell me. What do you want? What will it take for you to leave us alone?

Adam: Will you at least give me a hint about what you’re accusing me of?

Lily: Don’t pretend that you don’t know what I’m talking about. I’m not here to play games.

Adam: What’s on your mind, lily?

Lily: Well, victor made it very clear the two of you are coming after billy and chanccomm, so I’m here to ask — what do you want? Let’s make an arrangement. I am here to negotiate a cease-fire.

Adam: Say what you mean, mean what you say. I admire that. Unfortunately, there’s nothing to negotiate.

Lily: Everything in business is negotiable.

Adam: Look, you have been straightforward, so I will be straightforward with you, as well. Newman media has a plan, and we will move forward with it. For obvious reasons, I won’t get into the particulars with you, but —

Lily: You know there’s room for all of us, right? I mean, newman media is doing great. Chanccomm poses no threat to you. This is purely about victor’s hatred for billy. So, why are you going along with this? I mean, if anyone owes billy peace, especially on account of delia, it’s you. So, what are you doing? I mean, are you — are you trying to appease your father? And, you know, what’s funny is that billy never believed your whole thing about becoming a better person, but I really wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. I have seen women in prison turn their lives around. I know it can be done. So, was I wrong about you? Or are you just beyond redemption? Nope

Chloe: Yeah.

Sally: We could do a mini dressmaker form. And a pincushion, a thimble.

Chloe: Oh, I love the dress form idea. You know, those little doll-sized ones with the little movable arms.

Sally: It’s more like a mannequin, but…

Chloe: Right. Whatever. Both of them. You know, just stuff with our logos on them, tchotchkes.

Sally: Oh! Oh! We could do, like, retro lunch boxes that can also double as, like, mini —

Chloe: Sewing kits?

Sally: Yes! And they could be the consolation prize for our design competition.

Chloe: Nice, nice.

Sally: Oh, my god. I missed this so much.

Chloe: Brainstorming?

Sally: I just feel like we’re in mind-meld.

Chloe: We do really work well together.

Sally: I’d really hoped that coming to newman media would be a good move, but, like, this is far beyond anything I ever dreamed.

Chloe: Aww, I’ve enjoyed it, too.

Sally: We only have one cloud on the horizon — chanccomm.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Sally: You saw how upset lily was when she marched into adam’s office, and I have witnessed some tension between adam and lily’s partner, billy. Something is up.

Chloe: I know. I sensed it, too. I’m just trying not to worry about it.

Sally: Yeah, but don’t you think we should? It could wind up affecting our division.

Chloe: I just wish we could take our generous funding and spin off from newman media, become our own entity, stay away from the drama.

Sally: Yeah. I mean, I don’t really know if that’s the answer ’cause proximity to leadership’s kind of our strength. Adam doesn’t just fund everything. He also gives us access and exposure.

Chloe: Friendly reminder — this banter-flirtation thing you have going on with adam — it won’t fly once chelsea joins the team.

Adam: You’re not wrong. Redemption is a goal of mine. And I think have been successful at turning my life around. But at the end of the day, I am still a businessman, and no competition is better than some. As far as me owing billy some sort of debt, I can’t change the mistakes that I’ve made. And, unfortunately, no matter what I do, billy will never be satisfied. I mean, the minute jill put you two in charge, he’s just used chanccomm to attack me in the most brutal, personal ways possible. Not that he gave you much of a choice in that matter.

Lily: Mm. Are you finished?

Adam: Not quite. I’d, um — I’d actually like to make you an offer.

Lily: Oh. So, you are willing to negotiate?

Adam: No. I’m talking about a job offer.

Lily: [ Laughs ] You’re — you’re kidding, right?

Adam: [ Laughs ] When my father and I — we successfully crush chanccomm and we scoop up the remains, you are more than welcome to come along. I mean, we’ve always thought that you were the reason it succeeded. We have great admiration for you. Billy, on the other hand, only seems interested in using the company as his personal battering ram, going after whomever he dislikes on any given day.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] You know, that’s very ironic, given that’s exactly what you and victor have planned. But, honestly, none of this matters. You will never take chanccomm away from us.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] You really do have quite the poker face. Billy is rubbing off on you. But, uh, given his history of self-destructing, now might be a good time to consider a career move. It’s a bona fide offer. I really hope that you will seriously consider it, given how this is all gonna turn out.

Nikki: About this plan of yours…

Gaines: I put myself in enemy territory coming back to genoa city, surrounded by people that would just as soon kill me as say hello. Now, I did it because I wanted to see ashland get his. I came to you because I thought that our interests dovetailed and I thought that you would protect me and not throw me to the wolves. But if I have misread you in any way, I will be out of here so fast, it’ll make your head spin. So don’t blow this. Either we work together on this or not at all.

Billy: That’s a good point, given that neither one of us trusts the other. So, we take this one step at time. Either one of us can bail at any point.

Gaines: Alright. Sounds like a healthy way to move forward.

Billy: I’m glad we agree. Now, where is the letter? When you hear the word healthy,

Adam: What, um — what’s your question, nikki?

Nikki: I had a very troubling conversation with victoria earlier.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Don’t tell me that billy has gotten to her and now she’s having second thoughts about going after chanccomm?

Nikki: Not at all. She has no interest in protecting him. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with this.

Adam: Okay, well, then what is so upsetting?

Nikki: In case you haven’t heard, she and ashland are getting ready to fly to peru. His chemotherapy isn’t working, and they are hoping to get him into an experimental treatment protocol.

Adam: Yeah. Ashland filled me in.

Nikki: Ah. Well, so you are aware that they are facing an uncertain future. But instead of focusing on his health, your plan has ashland riled up. He’s upset with billy all over again. It’s wasting a lot of time and energy, and it’s creating a lot of negativity at the worst possible time.

Adam: Ashland wanted to be involved. It was his choice. He was pushing for this. So I had no idea that it was problem.

Nikki: Well, it is. That’s why I’m here. Because in your zeal for revenge, I don’t think you have taken everything into account, you or victor. And victor is very busy concentrating on abby, as well he should be.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Uh, well, I appreciate you letting me know.

Nikki: You know, I came away from our talk yesterday believing that you had good intentions, that your desire to be the man you were always meant to be was sincere.

Adam: What exactly are you asking me to do?

Nikki: Well, I can’t be any more specific because I have no idea what you and victor have in mind. I don’t want to know.

Adam: Well, that seems to be the consensus.

Nikki: He has assured me that it won’t have any negative impact on our grandchildren, but I find that hard to believe considering your target is katie and johnny’s father.

Adam: This really is just business, nikki.

Nikki: Oh, please. Don’t insult my intelligence. It’s a lot more than that for your father and for you. So I am asking you to please forego the temporary satisfaction in leveling this man that you seem to detest so much and think about what you’re doing. Please think about the long-term damage it could do to other people caught in the cross-fire.

Billy: Hey.

Lily: Well, so much for taking the high road.

Billy: What do you mean by that?

Lily: Well, I ran into victoria, and she completely stonewalled me, so I went to go see adam. And he was as smug and self-congratulatory as ever.

Billy: Ah, yes, the new and improved adam. It’s all a facade to win hearts and minds.

Lily: I mean, there’s no talking to him. There’s — there’s no reasoning.

Billy: I’m surprised you even tried, lily.

Lily: I had to try. I had to so that I could say i did everything I could and I had no other choice.

Billy: No other choice but to what?

Lily: To do whatever it takes.

Billy: Oh, hell, yeah.

Lily: Yeah, we’re not letting them get away with this.

Billy: I am very happy to hear you say that. And I got something else that i think will make you happy — the original letter from camilla rhodes stating that ashland gets nothing from her will.

Lily: Gaines gave this to you?

Billy: Yes, he did. Now, right there is our ace in the hole.

Christine: Nina, this trip is not an option. Undercover operatives were lost. It is a tumultuous situation, and abby wants to go running around asking about an american who was working undercover?

Devon: It’s just not smart.

Christine: This danger is real. It’s not gonna happen. And I’m sorry, but I will do everything in my power to keep the two of you from getting anywhere near that building.

Nina: Abby and I need this

[Voice breaking] If only just to finally accept that chance is gone and move on. But, you know, thinking about it, what if she’s right? What if he’s hurt and he can’t find a hospital and no one is looking for him?

Christine: Abby is not right. I’m sorry. I wish she knew something we don’t, but she doesn’T. And as painful as it is for me to say this to you… honey, ch– chance is gone.

[ Voice breaking ] And he’s not coming — he’s not coming back.

[ Both crying ]

Nina: [ Sniffles ]

[ Exhaling heavily ]

Christine: God, I — I have to take this. I’m so sorry.

Nina: It’s okay.

Christine: Nina, I’m gonna come back and check on you. I… trust me on this, please.

Devon: Nina… I would never claim to say that I know what you’re feeling right now. But I do know how a loss like this can overwhelm everything. And it makes it difficult to think rationally when your feelings are raw. I completely understand that. But I can’t stress to you enough how bad of an idea this would be.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: Can we just stop for a second, abby, and think about what you’re talking about doing and think about how reckless it would be to go to a place that’s that dangerous and that unstable, where there’s men and women still risking their lives there every day?

Abby: Chance may be one of them.

Devon: Even if he is, it doesn’t matter. We can’t let you go.

Abby: You can’t let me go look for my husband?

Devon: No, we can’t because there’s people already looking for him, and we’re not gonna let you put your life at risk.

Abby: The authorities have given us no definitive proof that chance was in that building when it blew up. So, what, they expect us to just roll over and accept this? Don’t you want to see what happened for yourself?

Nina: Yes. Oh, my god, yes, I do. I know why you want to go, abby. I’m feeling all the same things.

Abby: Well, great. Great. Yeah, go pack your things. I will handle things on this end.

Nina: No, wait. Let me finish. What you’re proposing to do — it’s a terrible idea. It just isn’t safe.

Abby: I don’t care about the danger.

Nina: It’s not just the danger, though.

Devon: Abby, are you trained, like, to go and do anything like this? Do you have experience in law enforcement?

Abby: The authorities aren’t looking for chance!

Devon: Why would you say that? “A,” you don’t know that for a fact, and, “b,” what are you gonna do when you show up to a crime scene that you weren’t invited to? All the people that are there, the agents — they’re gonna have to stop whatever they’re doing so they can deal with you. Can you please just leave this up to the professionals? I beg you.

Abby: I have left it to the professionals! And they have given me no real answers! Look, I know that I can take this on. I am going to fly to valencia, and I am gonna find out what happened to chance. Whether or not you want to come with me, I don’t care, so stop trying to talk me out of it.

Mariah: If you’re going to spain, what does that mean for dominic? Should I move back in and stay with him?

Devon: No, I know you will, but I just — I also know how big of a step this is for you to testify and bring up everything about your father again. So I — I just wish that I could be there for you.

Amanda: I know. And I know that I have your support, even if you’re not right by my side. So don’t worry. I will be fine. Really. I promise you, okay? What I am really worried about is this chance situation. It’s horrible. I want you to know I understand why you have to be there with abby and dominic. They need you more than I do.

Devon: You really are amazing. You know that?

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. So are you. Now, promise me you won’t worry about me, okay?Just take care of abby.

Victoria: Alright. Well, I’m glad to hear that, but are you sure getting on a plane tomorrow is a good idea? Flying all the way to peru to receive a medical evaluation — that might be a little bit too much for you right now.

Ashland: The symptoms make me more determined to go. The cancer’s not responding to the chemo and there’s no time to waste and this is my best option, so I’m determined to go.

Victoria: You do seem very determined.

Ashland: You better believe it. If there’s any chance that I can have extended time with you, I’m gonna go after it. There’s nothing I’m gonna let stand in the way.

Victoria: Gosh, I just — I love seeing you like this, with such strength and resolve.

Ashland: Yeah, I just can’t stop thinking about how, just when I was about to commit every remaining moment of my life to you, that billy showed up in tuscany intent on stopping our wedding. He was hoping to rob me of this small window of happiness that I’ve been fortunate to find with you.

Victoria: But he didn’t succeed. I don’t want you to think about that. We dodged that bullet.

Ashland: Yeah, for now. You know, there are so many things in my life that I can’t control. This is one thing I can. Billy will answer for his actions.

[ Breathes deeply ] Victor, I need an update on the moves that we are planning to make against billy and chanccomm. I spoke to adam earlier, and he told me that everythig is moving along as planned.

Victor: That’s right.

Ashland: Listen, I’m heading to peru tomorrow. I’m probably gonna be dealing with doctors and this experimental protocol and most likely be unable to get any sort of updates or a progress report.

Victor: Well, don’t you concern yourself, alright, ashland? The most important step in our plan has been taken. That is what adam just told me.

Ashland: So, you really think that billy will do as you expect?

Victor: Billy won’t be able to help himself.

Billy: First of all, why did leave the suite in tuscany? I told you specifically to stay put.

Gaines: Yeah, and I could see that you were waffling, and i didn’t think that I could trust you. I didn’t come all that way for nothing. So I decided to take matters into my own hands. And I waited all night until the wedding started, but before i could make my move, victoria’s brother nick showed up, and he locked me in his suite. And then his other brother got involved.

Billy: Adam?

Gaines: Yeah. Adam. Adam was far less congenial. He had me dragged down to some storage room in the bottom of the palazzo to keep me from disrupting the wedding.

Lily: You’re saying adam held you against your will?

Gaines: Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m saying. And victor had newman security drag me out in the middle of the night to some nearby farmhouse.

Lily: So I’m guessing they took your I.D., Your money, your devices? You couldn’t call for help?

Gaines: Yeah. Of course they did. First I thought they were just trying to scare the hell out of me, but then I started hearing snatches of conversations that sounded a lot more ominous.

Billy: And what were they saying? Who was saying it? Newman’s security goons were talking. I was worried that they were gonna take more drastic measures to shut me up.

Billy: And by “drastic,” you mean permanent?

Gaines: Yeah. First I thought maybe they’d just beat the hell out of me, but then I was wondering if they were gonna do something to shut me up for good.

Billy: How did you escape?

Gaines: Well, it wasn’t easy. They had me locked in the wine cellar of some 100-year-old property. I searched every inch of that room, until finally I found this old boarded-up door behind a wine rack that led outside.

Lily: Really? That’s convenient.

Gaines: I know. It sounds nuts, but that’s what happened.

Lily: So, how did you get out of italy with no money, no passport?

Billy: We checked all the manifests of everywhere that you could have traveled. There was no one by the name of jesse gaines that left italy.

Lily: Okay, you had to have had help getting out of italy. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been able to pull it off.

Gaines: No. As you know, victor’s team had me stripped of anything — money, I.D., Passport. So I had to rely on my wits. I walked and I hitchhiked to some nearby airfield, and i stowed away on a cargo plane.

Billy: With no idea where it was headed?

Gaines: No, I was able to identify one that was headed to new york. I got here a day ago. And then I hopped on a cross-country freight train, i got off just outside of chicago, and I made my way here.

Lily: I don’t understand. I mean, you’ve been paid a small fortune from locke and victor and billy, so why wouldn’t you access the money once you were back in the country?

Gaines: [ Chuckles ] Good question. Believe me, I was tempted, considering my love for the creature comforts. I don’t like living like an animal. But I quickly realized that not having access to my funds was a blessing in disguise. It would have been the easiest way for them to track me down. It would have left a trail of expenditures.

[ Water bottle thuds ]

Billy: Why come to me?

Lily: Why come back here at all if you’re so afraid of the newmans?

Devon: No, she doesn’t at all. But she’s gonna get through it with our help, and I want you to know that I’m gonna make myself completely available to her and dominic whenever they need me. I’ll rearrange my schedule anytime. I don’t care.

Victor: I’m grateful that you’re here.

Devon: Thank you.

Victor: And by the way, this probably brings back some bitter memories for you, doesn’t it? I mean, considering the loss of your dad.

Devon: I mean, I’m — I’m fine. I’m — I don’t have room in my head for anything else right now except for what’s best for abby and for this baby right here.

Victor: Well, together, we will help her through this.

Devon: You don’t think there’s a possibility that chance wasn’t in that building when it blew up, do you?

Victor: [ Exhales heavily ] No. I have some highly placed sources in the state department, and they tell me that there’s almost no chance at all and no survival, you know? That building was blown to smithereens. Same information that christine received.

Devon: It’s just so unnecessary. It’s completely unnecessary. Who — who takes on a life-threatening job right after they get married and then they promise their wife they’re gonna start a family? And then who’s dumb enough to bring with them a personally engraved watch and ring on a job that you’re meant to be undercover? We don’t know if that — that could be the very thing that cost him his life.

Victor: But listen. I think chance was the kind of man who probably felt this is something he had to do.

Devon: He didn’t have to do it. He didn’t have to do anything. He made the choice to do it. That’s — he made a choice, and it was the wrong one.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Amanda: What are you doing here, sutton? How did you even know where to find me? Are you having me followed? Is that how you know where i live?

Sutton: My attorney told me this is where you’re having material sent. I wasn’t certain you were living here until you told me just now.

Amanda: Well, it’s really none of your business.

Sutton: I’m happy for you. Mm. Seems devon is a good man. And he clearly cares about you very much.

Amanda: Yeah, he does. Which is why he would have told me to follow my first instinct and slam the door in your face.

Sutton: Oh.

Amanda: You know, whatever it is that you need to say to me…

Sutton: Hear me out, amanda. I know there’s nothing that i can say that will change how you feel about me, but I’m asking you to just consider how it will affect your mother and your sister if you testify against me.

Sutton: I have always put them first. I provided a good life for naya and imani. I protected them.

Amanda: Controlled them, you mean. Because this “good life” that you speak of, it was all if they toed the line, if they did what was best for you, for your self-image, for your precious career.

Sutton: Naya and imani have come to rely on me, and I want to continue to provide for their financial stability, to see that they have the kind of life that they’ve become accustomed to and that they deserve.

Amanda: You do know that naya has a husband, right? His name is eric. He is completely capable of taking care of her. Oh, and imani, she will be going into practice with me, so she’ll be able to take care of herself. So I’m sorry, sutton, but they don’t need you. In fact, they’re better off without you.

Sutton: And what about me?

Sutton: I’m an old man. I can’t die in prison. Are you so cold-hearted that you would wish that fate on your own grandfather?

Amanda: Are you really gonna talk to me about fate? What about my father’s fate? What about my fate? What about the fate of my twin sister? All because of what you forced my mother to do. You never gave a damn about us.

[ Sighs ] You have a hell of a lot of nerve coming here and asking me for mercy, the one thing that you never gave to anyone, including your own family.

Amanda: I never should’ve let you inside the door. It was a mistake, even talking to you.

Sutton: Hold on, amanda. Think about it. Why did you let me in? I’ll tell you, since I’m the only one being honest here. You were hoping to see me beg for my life, weren’t you? You wanted me to plead with you, not to let me be torn away from my family.

Amanda: The way that I was torn away from mine?

Sutton: You know full well that you had no intention of showing me any mercy, but that’s the point of all this, isn’t it? The betrayal.

Amanda: Betrayal?

Sutton: Yeah.

Amanda: Wow, you feel betrayed?

Sutton: No, well, you make a show of righteous anger, claiming it’s all about getting justice, when you and I both know better, but you’d never have the guts to admit it.

[ Chuckles ] Your turning on me is nothing more than a vindictive act.

Amanda: So what if it is?!

Victoria: Ashland. Do you really think that it’s a good idea for you to get involved in this plan with my father and adam against chanccomm? Given the state of your health and after what I just witnessed, I mean, wouldn’t it be better for you to focus your energy and your attention on your recovery?

Ashland: Well, I didn’t expend any energy. I just asked for an update, that’s all.

Victoria: I’m just saying, don’t you think it would be better for you to — to think about this trip to peru and the new experimental treatment?

Ashland: My darling, you don’t have to worry. I will do everything in my power to prolong my life.

Victoria: I just don’t want you getting in too deep into whatever this is with my father, especially if it causes you even the tiniest amount of stress. I mean, who knows what kind of negative impact this might have on your health?

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] Trust me. I am not playing a major role in this. I just wanted to know if the moves that we’re making against billy and chanccomm are moving along as planned. You said you didn’t want to know any details, so I’ll leave it at that.

Victoria: I’m saying, I want them to proceed without your direct involvement. You have enough battles to fight. You don’t need that one, too. Let my father handle this.

Devon: Let me tell you, the second that chance agreed to start a family with abby, he had a commitment to his wife and to that baby, and that’s it. End of story. I don’t care what kind of job he has. I respect it. It’s fine, it’s great. But he should never have gone. He should never have gone and he should have never made promises to abby that he couldn’t keep.

Victor: Well, you know, we don’t know all of the circumstances, and maybe he didn’t have much of a choice.

Devon: He for sure had a choice. They didn’t drag him out there. They could’ve sent another agent. He could’ve stayed home. He could’ve decided to stay home with his brand-new wife and his new family that he said he wanted to start. But he didn’t do that. He made the decision to go back out and put his life in danger, and now abby’s alone and his son has no father.

[ Dominic crying ] I’m sorry, buddy. I’m sorry. Here. Oh, come here. It’s okay. It’s okay, I’m sorry.

[ Sighs ] (Drill sergeant) what a pleasant morning. It’s warm, but not too warm.

Devon: Thank you. I appreciate that. I want you to know that I meant what I said, too, about being there for her and dominic, whatever they need.

Ashley: Abby’s trying to sleep. I’m sure it’s not coming easily.

Victor: Well, any rest she can get is gonna help her, right? Talking about that, devon, why don’t you — why don’t you go home? You need some rest. I’m sure you have things you have to do.

Devon: I don’t have anything I can’t postpone.

Ashley: Please, victor’s right. We are so grateful for you, but I think we’ve got it covered.

Devon: Okay. Alright, yeah, I’ll take off, but I’ll come and check on you guys later on. If you guys have any more information or you hear anything else, just please keep me in the loop.

Victoria: You bet. We will let you know, okay?

Devon: Appreciate it.

Ashley: Thanks again.

Victor: Alright, devon, thank you for everything.

Devon: Of course.

Ashley: Okay. What are we gonna do? I’m worried about abby.

Victor: I’m very worried about her, as well. I don’t know.

Ashland: When I promised to be open and honest with you, i meant it, so when I tell you that I am completely focused on fighting the most important battle of my life, you can believe me.

Victoria: I do. I do. I’m just concerned for you.

Ashland: You said you had no problem with newman media making a move against billy and chanccomm.

Victoria: I understand that it’s just business.

Ashland: Well, I’m sure that billy has entertained his own ideas about going after the competition.

Victoria: Without a doubt. Look, what I said about wanting to be left out of the details still stands, but — but I’d like to have some idea about the possible repercussions this might have on you and the tolls that it might take on your health.

Ashland: Trust me. You have no worries on that account.

Victoria: What about my children? Obviously, their father is involved in this. Is this business plan gonna have a negative effect on them?

Billy: Got you a fresh towel, some clean clothes. Why don’t you get cleaned off a little bit?

Gaines: Thanks. I could use a hot shower.

Lily: Are you buying any of this?

Billy: I don’t know. It’s a hell of a lot to swallow, isn’t it? If it is true, it’s got huge ramifications for victor, adam, and locke.

Lily: Okay, I know that you want to believe this, but we have to be skeptical.

Billy: Yes, I agree. We’ve got to look into this story. First things first, though, he cannot stay here. We’ve got the kids living with us while victoria’s out of town. We got to find him a place to stay while we vet his story.

Lily: Well, yeah, for us to use this, I mean, it has to be ironclad. There can’t be holes.

Billy: Of course. This is all about getting leverage on ashland, and by extension, victor and newman media. If his story is true, if he is telling the truth, and he’s still got the original letter proving that ashland forged his way into his fortune, this is what we need to turn the tables on victor and newman media.

Lily: Those are some mighty big “ifs.”

Amanda: If wanting to see you put away for what you did is vindictive, then so be it. Finally, you will get exactly what you deserve.

Sutton: You’re right. It was a mistake, my coming here. You know, I thought you might have a shred of compassion and consideration for what you’re about to do to this family. Your family. Apparently, that’s not the case.

Amanda: Sutton thinks that he is so clever. He’s trying to turn the tables on me, huh?

Amanda: You’re gonna empty your pockets, grandfather, or I’m gonna call the police and then I’m gonna call michael baldwin, and then we can sit down and explain to them what’s really going on.

Sutton: What are you talking about? There’s nothing to tell, and why do you think that — that I’m hiding something?

Amanda: This innocent act, okay? It’s not fooling anyone.

Devon: Okay, alright, hey. How about I keep him company and you go make that call?

Amanda: Mm, yes.

Sutton: [ Scoffs ]

Amanda: Exactly what i thought. So all of this deep concern about naya and imani and their future, it was all a bunch of bull, huh? You didn’t care about them. The only person that you ever care about is yourself. My auntie called me.

Amanda: So my grandfather wanted to get a recording of me admitting that I was only testifying against him out of vindictiveness so that he could pass it on to his attorneys. They could use it in court and diminish and taint my testimony.

Devon: I mean, I’m not surprised. He would throw anybody in his family under the bus.

Sutton: [ Scoffs ]

Amanda: Get out of my sight, sutton.

Sutton: What a disappointment you’ve turned out to be.

Amanda: Don’t you dare talk to me about disappointment.

Devon: Hey, sutton. How about you get out of our house? Are you okay?

Amanda: I just can’t believe I almost fell for it. I almost let him get to me again. It’s like he’s a master at manipulating and playing with my emotions.

Devon: Yeah, but you didn’t fall for anything. You figured out what he was trying to do and you called him out on it to his face. Right?

Amanda: Yeah. You know, the fact that he would even try and do something like this shows how dangerous and scared he is. Which means that he knows the case against him is strong. And it’s possible that, out of desperation, sutton may have made a huge mistake. What he did tonight, it may help send him to prison.

Billy: I’m taking you to a motel so you can lay low while we corroborate your story and we plan the next move.

Lily: And just so you know, we’re not taking anything you say at face value.

Ashley: I am so worried about her. My heart is breaking for abby. I wish chance had never taken that job.

Victor: Sweetheart, we just have to help her get strong so she can continue being a good mother.

Ashley: I know, and I’m grateful that she has such a fantastic support system. I mean, devon has been amazing.

Victor: He’s a wonderful kid, he really is, you know? Not only a good friend to abby, but he is very good with the boy.

Ashley: He literally helped bring that baby safely into the world.

Victor: Yep.

Ashley: You know, we are so blessed that he’s gonna be an integral part of our grandson’s life.

[ Footsteps ]

Abby: I heard dominic crying.

Victor: Sweetheart, he’s just a little fussy, that’s all.

Ashley: Before devon left, he was able to quiet him down and get him back to sleep, which is what I thought you were gonna be doing, honey.

Abby: I tried, but…I can’T. I mean, every time I close my eyes, I just — I dream of chance. It’s too painful. Makes me dread sleep. It’s like I never want to close my eyes again.

Victor: Abby, my sweetheart, maybe now’s a good time to take the anti-anxiety that nate prescribed, you know?

Abby: Yeah, maybe. I mean, maybe that’s what i need, sleep.

[ Knock on door ]

Nina: Cricket called and told me what happened. Oh, god. Until this very moment, it didn’t seem real.

[ Sobbing ]

Devon: You really are something. When I walked in here and you were standing in front of him, he was completely shocked.

Amanda: Well, I shocked myself.

Devon: Yeah, but he had the look of a man who had never been challenged a day in his life, ’cause he’s used to controlling everybody around him. And then he finally came face-to-face with someone who’s smarter than him. I’m very proud of you for how you’ve handled everything. You’ve been amazing.

Amanda: I just knew that this was the last time I’d let him play me. I wasn’t gonna get sucked in by him again.

Devon: Yeah, but you didn’t, and every time he tried, you checked him and you got back on track.

Amanda: Thank you. But we do have worse things to deal with than some arrogant old bully. Did you get any more news about chance?

Devon: No, no. I mean, abby is still hanging on to hope, but…I think that she’s starting to accept the reality that he’s not gonna come back home.

Amanda: Wow. How’s she doing?

Devon: She’s not doing good. She’s not doing good at all. And I’m honestly worried about her and dominic.

Victor: I’m so sorry.

[ Sighs ] Unfortunately, my sources can only confirm what christine has told you, okay? The only thing they found that belonged to chance were his ring and his watch.

Nina: I — I spent so many years just bracing for this moment. I mean, how many times has a phone rung in the middle of the night and my heart stopped? But somehow you just — you learn to live with the fear. Anyway, I… I just buried it so deep that i didn’t feel it. And now that it’s happened, i just kind of — I don’t know. I feel numb. Abby. May I? Hi, sweetie. Oh.

Ashland: Sweetheart, you have to realize that I wouldn’t go along with anything that i thought had the slightest possibility of negatively impacting your children. I would have done anything in my power to stop your father and brother from going through with it, if I thought that was the case.

Victoria: I had to ask.

Ashland: But billy has proven on more than one occasion that he’s willing to weaponize chanccomm, especially against me, which is bad enough, but — but when he made it personal and dragged gaines over to tuscany to make a public display at our wedding, well, I have to agree with victor that enough is enough and billy brought this on himself.

Victoria: I’m not gonna argue with you about that. Billy is nothing if not relentless.

Ashland: Yeah, well, what’s coming next to him is going to be pretty brutal. Everything has been carefully arranged down to the last detail. Although it’s a slightly risky endeavor.

Victoria: Dangerous?

Ashland: No, risky in that it might not work.

Billy: Put this on and wait here. I’m gonna take him to the motel. Get him settled in, make sure he’s safe.

Lily: Okay. Just please be careful, alright?

Billy: I will call you on the way home. Listen, you really are the only one in the world that I trust right now. Including victoria.

Lily: I don’t know about this. I mean, honestly, just —

Billy: No more. It’s okay. Look, this is either true or it’s a scam. Either way, I need to find out where it leads. Victor and adam are coming after us with everything they’ve got to destroy what we built. And I am gonna fight like hell to make sure that that does not happen. Let’s go.

Jack: I got it.

Phyllis: You don’t have to do that.

[ Sighs ]

Jack: Seem a little flustered. Is it the fire you had to put out back at work? You kind of left the lunch with Nick and Nikki pretty quickly.

Phyllis: Yeah, I’m sorry about that.

Jack: It’s okay. Had to navigate the Newman waters all by myself.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, I’ve had to nav– navigate those choppy waters. You know, it’s — nothing is going on at work. It’s my life. I think Nick and I may have just broken up.

Nick: Sorry to drop by unannounced. I hope it’s not a bad time.

Sharon: No, not at all. Is everything okay?

Nick: Yeah, I just wanted to, you know, see how you two were doing and maybe faith.

Sharon: Well, you just missed her. She’s out studying for a test with Moses.

Nick: Oh, man, I feel like i have seen her so little lately.

Noah: Yeah, I just told mom I was gonna cook dinner. You want to join us?

Nick: You know, I’m good. I don’t have much of an appetite.

Sharon: I take it things didn’t go that well with Phyllis.

Nick: I don’t really want to get into it.

Noah: Yes, you do.

Nick: What I’d really like to do is hear how things are going with you, bud.

Noah: No, mnh-mnh. No, you don’t get to change the subject. You came here ’cause you wanted to talk. We want to listen, ’cause we’re your family, too.

Ashland: Hello, my beauty.

Victoria: Oh, hello, there. I’m so glad you’re here. I’m doing a deeper dive into the experimental treatment that we’ve been pursuing. Trying to find out if I have a connection to the hospital that’s funding the research.

Ashland: Oh, well, I’m one step ahead of you. I was able to secure an evaluation appointment at the clinic hosting the treatment.

Victoria: That’s fantastic.

Ashland: There’s just one hiccup, though. They had one opening for me that they could fit me into, and it’s coming up soon — as in I have to leave right now.

Victoria: You mean we’ve got to go. That’s fine. The sooner we get you signed up for the protocol,

Lily: I know. It’s so rare these days. Normally, your mind’s going 100 miles an hour. Even when you’re trying to unwind, your multi-tasker brain is at work.

Billy: It’s another positive effect that you have on me, learning to slow down and shut things off a little bit.

Lily: Mm-hmm. So you’re not secretly checking your phone under the table?

Billy: Uh, I am.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: I am busted. But you know what? I’m gonna turn into a zen master overnight, okay? But I will keep trying.

Lily: Ah.

[ Chuckles ]

Sharon: I agree with noah. You do seem stressed out. Now, I know I’ve said I’m not the best person to give advice when it comes to phyllis, but, you know, I can listen. We both can.

Nick: [ Sighs ] I guess I was looking for somebody to talk to about this. But I also feel like I’m all talked out, you know?

Noah: Yeah, well, whatever it is, it’s obviously still bothering you. It might feel better to get it off your chest.

Sharon: I’m sorry you guys have dug into a rut that you can’t get out of.

Nick: Well, I know you were expecting this when I told you i was having questions about my relationship.

Sharon: I would never say “i told you so” or imply that you deserve some kind of heartache. I know you’re hurting. The question is, do you think that this relationship can be repaired?

Jack: Take a deep breath. Slow down.

Phyllis: Okay.

Jack: You said you think that you and Nick are broken up. First of all, that’s normally one of the things that we’re pretty clear on one way or the other.

Phyllis: Right, right. Well, let’s add a lack of clarity to the list of our issues. Let’s do that. And you had a front-row seat to our final act, didn’t you?

Jack: Well, I will agree that lunch with Nick and Nikki was a bit strained, but I thought the two of you being there together was a good sign, that maybe the two of you were back on track.

Phyllis: Yeah, I thought so, too. But you saw how he reacted when I said the slightest little thing about the great victor Newman.

Jack: You criticized his father in front of his mother. I can understand where Nick might feel a little awkward there.

Phyllis: Okay, no, no, that’s not it. That’s not it. But — listen, he reacts the exact same way anytime he says something about his family and then i repeat it.

Jack: Okay, well, the dynamic in the Newman family has always been a bit different than that in the Abbott clan.

Phyllis: Yes, and I don’t want to be a part of it anymore. There was no work emergency, Jack. That was a lie. I don’t want to be a part of Nick’s judgment and his jealousy anymore.

Jack: What do you mean jealousy?

Phyllis: You know, and then after lunch, he found me back at the grand phoenix, and we had a conversation.

[ Exhales sharply ] All of this resentment that he feels toward me came out in all of its glory. And he told me in no uncertain terms that we cannot be together anymore.

Ashland: I’m not gonna presume that you would come with me on this trip. It’s only preliminary. An evaluation of my condition to see if I’m even a candidate for this treatment. I’m not gonna ask you to leave for that.

Victoria: Well, I’m offering.

Ashland: Look, Newman/Locke has just way too much going on, and you’ve shouldering most of the workload. I’ll only be gone a few days, sweetheart.

Victoria: No, I am not gonna let you go through this evaluation on your own, let alone a trip to Peru. We’re in this together 100%. Besides, it’s gonna be hard for you to process all of the medical information in the moment.

Ashland: I’ll be fine.

Victoria: You need someone there to take it all in with you, to ask questions. Most importantly, to hold your hand.

Ashland: I agree, but —

Victoria: Let me just rephrase that. I need to hold your hand.

Ashland: I’m not gonna be able to change your mind about this, am I?

Victoria: What do you think? So when do we leave?

Nikki: Leave? Leave for where?

[ Inhales sharply ] Your honeymoon? And tonight’s winning numbers are 18,

Ashland: Well, I wish we were going on our honeymoon, but, unfortunately, there’s been a change of plans and we’re just gonna have to put that on hold a little while longer.

Nikki: Oh, well, if this has something to do with work, I’d be happy to step up and handle things.

Victoria: Well, whatever small disappointment to put off the honeymoon, it pales in comparison. This is infinitely more important. Do you mind if I share the news with her?

Ashland: Of course, we’re all family now.

Nikki: Well, does this trip have something to do with Ashland’s health?

Victoria: Yes, but it’s a good thing. He has an opportunity to try an experimental treatment, so we’re jumping at the opportunity and we’re gonna fly to Peru and see if we can have him evaluated and get him signed up for the trial.

Nikki: Well, I pray that the evaluation goes well and that you can move forward to the new treatment.

Victoria: Thank you, Mom.

Ashland: I really appreciate the support, and, uh, I’m extremely touched by how you and victor have accepted me into your lives.

Nikki: Well, you’re our daughter’s husband now, so you are a very important part of this family.

Ashland: You know, you have trusted me with your daughter’s heart, and I want nothing more than to honor that. It’s Victoria’s love that spurs me on to beat back this damn illness for as long as I can.

Nick: I thought things with Phyllis could be repaired, but after this latest argument, Phyllis told me that she doesn’t agree.

Noah: She said that?

Nick: Yeah. In no uncertain terms. She’s very angry.

Noah: It’s hard to have a productive conversation with someone when they’re completely wrapped up in their own grievances.

Nick: It’s like talking to a brick wall. Nothing I say gets through. And when I do something, she doesn’t believe me anyway.

Sharon: Can you give us some specifics?

Nick: I don’t know what to say. Honestly, I have no idea how we got here. Things were — you know, they were great. We went into this relationship this time around with our eyes wide open. We had very reasonable expectations. We didn’t try and change one another. We accepted each other for who we are. You know, it was working. This was working.

Sharon: So, then where did things start to go wrong?

Nick: I thought it was in Italy, but Phyllis said it was way earlier than that, you know? I thought it was just, like, a bump in the road. I’ve been drawn into some family drama, as you know, with Victoria and Dad and Adam, and I guess I should’ve been focusing more on what was going on with us. But, you know, everything blew up. I tried my best to stay calm, but Phyllis was raw and hurting, and she was throwing around a bunch of accusations at me. It just went from zero to 60 so fast.

Phyllis: I feel if we’re not having sex or playing video games, it’s like you’re pushing me away or you’re distant. It’s like you want nothing to do with me.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Anyway, last thing I want to do is draw you into this mess, you know? I don’t want to dump all this on you. And I certainly don’t want you to feel sorry for me.

Jack: So tell me exactly what happened in this fight.

Phyllis: [ Exhales sharply ] It was awful. You don’t want to hear this. This is just familiar territory.

Jack: I’m fine. Talk to me.

Phyllis: You must be so tired of listening to me. But I have done everything I can to support him. Everything I can. I mean, we went to Kyle and summer’s wedding, and he was so distracted with Victoria and Ashland. I mean, it’s his daughter’s wedding. But I supported him, and then i doubled down and I accompanied him to Victoria and Ashland’s wedding in Tuscany. And then I even supported him when he decided not to go to the ceremony. I went alone. Me and his family. But he still thinks I don’t care and he still thinks that I don’t understand where he’s coming from.

Jack: That’s got to be frustrating.

Phyllis: Yes, it is, and i take all my consternation — I take it all, Jack, and I keep it to myself. And I stuff it in a box. And I still have his back, you know? And we had a really nice conversation. I thought we were getting somewhere this morning, and then we decided to go to lunch, and then you saw that. I say one little thing about his father and that is it, he shuts me down in front of both of you. And then I realized…we don’t deal with our issues. And if we do, it’s just on a superficial level. Do you know what I mean? I mean, it’s like there’s this superficiality to our relationship. It’s all fun and nice and fluffy, but it’s rotten inside.

Jack: Did you share that realization with Nick?

Phyllis: Oh. Of course I did. I told him exactly what I wanted. I told him I want a commitment and a confidant. And [Exhales sharply] Come on. I wouldn’t be working this hard at this if I didn’t care and if I didn’t love him.

Jack: So how did Nick react to this?

Nick: Loving and doting? That’s what you think you were being?

Phyllis: He just belittled me. With less moderate-to-severe eczema why hide your skin

Jack: Sometimes we say really unpleasant things in the middle of a heated argument.

Phyllis: Yep, and it may be unpleasant. It’s often…revealing. Those things we don’t want to say. Those things we gloss over. Those things that we hide from one another. And sometimes from ourselves.

Jack: You say you’re worried that there’s superficiality there. Maybe the answer is to dig deeper, to get it all out.

Phyllis: Well, normally, i would agree with you.

[ Chuckles ] Oh, god. This was not productive.

Jack: Okay, so give me an example. Look, I want to understand this. Maybe I can give you some perspective on where Nick is coming from.

Phyllis: See, that’s the thing, is I know where he’s coming from. I understand him. The problem is he doesn’t understand where I’m coming from, and he doesn’t want to. He doesn’t want to understand. Do you get it? I keep on trying to tell him that what we have is worth going there for, but he doesn’t want to. And I think that I just have to —

[ Breathes shakily ] I have to accept that I’m somebody, um…that he just doesn’t want to commit to.

Nick: Don’t do me any favors. You pretending to be superior or taking the high road is absurd.

Phyllis: What came out of that…was his obvious lack… of respect for me. And that hurts. Some things can’t be unsaid.

Sharon: Caring about you is not the same thing as feeling sorry for you. And you don’t have to go into details if you don’t want to, but you already said that Phyllis was angry and you seem hurt, so we’re just asking you what she said that hurt you.

Nick: After I talked to you two earlier, I went to her to apologize, and Phyllis actually admitted that she wasn’t happy. She did say that we’re in this together and we’re committed to doing the hard work to weed through our issues.

Sharon: Well, that’s good, but that process is bound to have some uncomfortable conversations and temporarily hurt feelings.

Nick: That’s not what this is.

Sharon: How can you be sure?

Nick: Because it turns out I’m the only one that’s willing to put in the effort. Then we got caught up in this weird, awkward lunch with Jack and my mom, and tensions amped up again and then Phyllis took off.

Noah: Running away never solves anything.

Nick: So I went and tracked her down to try and smooth things over. She didn’t want to talk, she just kept shutting me down, telling me that our relationship was hopeless.

Sharon: And so you just accepted that she had given up and that things were over?

Nick: No, I want her to talk about it because I want to understand. I want to get past our issues, but she just kept saying that — you know, that I always put my family before her. And I told her that it’s impossible for me to talk about my family with her because she has such strong opinions against them.

Noah: And what’d she say to that?

Nick: She told the truth.

Phyllis: You’re right! I do hate your family!

Nick: [ Sighs ] And I don’t know how to come back from that.

Adam: Hey. Hope you don’t mind me stopping by. I need to speak with Ashland.

Victoria: Well, he is on a call. I’m not sure how long he’ll be.

Adam: Okay. I can wait.

Victoria: In my office? Uh, no. I don’t think so.

Adam: Fine. I will text him. Unless you don’t mind passing along a message. It’s nothing I want to keep secret from you, since you’re on board with us going after Chanccomm.

Victoria: I assured Ashland that I don’t care if Newman media goes after them, that’s fine with me, but I don’t want to be involved. I don’t even want to know any of the details.

Adam: That’s fine by me. Just wanted to let him know that we have set things in motion.

Victoria: I will tell him.

Adam: Thanks.

Victoria: And just so you know, whatever happens next, he’s not gonna be around for that. We’re leaving for South America tomorrow afternoon. Ashland is pursuing a new cancer treatment.

Adam: Mm-hmm. It’s probably not the honeymoon you had in mind.

Victoria: Well, if it’s a success, it will be the best honeymoon ever.

Adam: Well, good luck. I hope for the best possible outcome.

Victoria: Thank you. I — I have faith that it’s gonna work. I mean, we’ve — we’ve just started our lives together, so i refuse to give up on it.

Adam: Well, I know when you’re determined, you won’t give up until you get what you want, so I look forward to seeing you and Ashland at your 10th wedding anniversary.

Victoria: What makes you think you’ll be invited to the party?

Adam: Well, you invited me to the wedding, so it’s required.

Victoria: Yeah, no, that’s not a rule.

Adam: Eh. Maybe not. But this, it feels like we’re bantering. Like siblings do. I’d like to think that we could build on this almost warm vibe.

Victoria: I’m pretty sure this is as good as it’s gonna get.

Adam: Okay, then.

Lily: How cute were the kids’ Halloween costumes this year?

Billy: Mm. So cute. Johnny was adorable. And Katie was a little scary. And you, of course, sexy.

Lily: Of course. It was for the after-hours party only.

Billy: Oh, yeah, wine and candy?

Lily: Yeah, that you stole from your children’s stash.

Billy: They have plenty to spare. And what can I say? I’ve got a soft spot for candy corn.

Lily: Oh, my god, I can’t believe I’m with someone who loves candy corn.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone rings ]

Billy: It’s Victoria.

Lily: Answer it.

Billy: Hello.

Victoria: Hey. Listen, I need to go out of town for a few days, and I was hoping that you could Johnny and Katie.

Billy: Yeah, sure, that’s fine. We love it when the kids come over to stay with us. Is everything okay? Is this business? Because I thought you were leaving for your honeymoon next week.

Victoria: I can’t get into it right now, but thanks for taking care of the kids. I appreciate it.

Billy: Of course.

Victoria: Bye.

Lily: What was that?

Billy: Victoria’s heading out of town for a few days unexpectedly, so the kids are gonna come and stay with us.

Lily: Yeah, that’s fine. I mean, it doesn’t really change our plans at all. Except I’ll warn them to hide their Halloween candy from you.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] Maybe we should head home and have a little adult time before they come over.

Lily: Mm, excellent idea.

Billy: Yeah, okay. On second thought, maybe we should look at the dessert menu.

I can’t believe it. Guy’s gone missing again. He gave the slip to Newman security, so we have new marching orders — find him asap. Okay. So much for my dinner break.

Billy: That’s Victor’s P.I. He must be talking about Gaines. Sounds like that S.O.B. Has slipped through Victor’s fingers again.

Lily: Well, at least that proves that Adam and victor didn’t do something more sinister to him.

Billy: I’m not gonna give them credit for that. But it does open the door for us potentially.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Why do I feel like this is the end to our work-free evening?

Billy: We shouldn’t talk here. Let’s go home.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Adam: Tell me some good news.

I think it worked. What next?

Adam: We let Billy do what he does best — self-destruct.

Jack: I honestly thought that you and Nick would find some way to get through this. Maybe that was wishful thinking. Maybe there is no solution.

Phyllis: Other than walking away, I don’t know. That’s the only conclusion i have. It scares me to think of that, actually. It breaks my heart. Oh, god, I don’t want to fall apart here.

Jack: You know what? We could somewhere more private where everyone isn’t watching us. Sometimes losing it for a moment is exactly what we need.

Phyllis: No, not this time. I don’t want to do that. I just think I need to be alone.

Jack: Okay. I get that.

Phyllis: Shouldn’t be so shocked. I mean, it’s not like I haven’t been here before with Nick. But…I mean, this was inevitable, I guess, right?

Jack: No, don’t say that. Look, you said you and Nick had been here before and somehow gotten through it. Maybe this is the last time you’ll face something like this.

Phyllis: Yeah, ironically, i think it is the last time. Just not in the way I was hoping.

Nick: Thank you for listening and being supportive. Means a lot. Give faith a hug for me.

Sharon: Alright. Give Christian our love, too.

Noah: I haven’t seen dad this out of sorts in a long time.

Sharon: I know. I feel so bad for him.

Noah: Yeah, but I know you were biting your tongue about seeing this coming.

Sharon: Well, I don’t want to make him feel worse, kick him when he’s down.

Noah: But still, you told me that you predicted this.

Sharon: Yes, privately, I’ve never understood how your kid could fool himself again into thinking that this relationship would have any other outcome.

Noah: I like Phyllis. I do, but even I can see that she and dad are like night and day. I know opposites can attract, but I never understood that pull they have.

Sharon: I think it has to do with the excitement of doing something illicit and forbidden, but then, under normal circumstances, when there is no more drama, it gets boring and it falls apart.

Noah: Or maybe…it’s not any of that. Maybe, deep down…dad never got over you. Hi Susan! Honey?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone rings ] Hey.

Jack: Hey. I just wanted to make sure you were back okay.

Phyllis: Liar. You wanted to make sure that i wasn’t in the fetal position, laying in a puddle of my tears.

Jack: It’s okay if you are, you know. More than anything, I want you to know if you need to reach out, I’m around.

Phyllis: You’re the best.

Jack: Be kind to yourself, okay? I’ll see you.

Phyllis: Oh, please, it’s not a flirtation.

Nick: Then what is it then? Because as far as I can tell, the second we have a conflict, you run straight to Jack.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Who knows what we’re gonna find behind the door that Gaines has opened? So many possibilities. But if we find him before victor’s people do, then we have the ammo to stop him from coming after Chanccomm.

Lily: There’s no assurance that finding Gaines will give anything but a liability.

Billy: Why would you think that? He’s got the proof that Ashland stole Camilla’s inheritance.

Lily: Yeah, and what do you want to do with the proof? We’ve talked about this. It could ruin Victoria and Ashland’s lives.

Billy: No, we don’t need to worry about that because we don’t need to publish the information. We will use it to blackmail Victor and Adam to stop them from coming after us.

Lily: [ Sighs ] No, we won’t.

Billy: Why not, Lily?

Lily: Because I am done with this, okay? I am not gonna humor you anymore. We’re done with Gaines.

Nikki: I think that meeting went well, don’t you?

Victoria: Yes, I like them. I think they’ll be good strategic partners for us.

Victoria: Well, actually, I have to go back to the office and finish some work before we leave for Peru.

Nikki: Oh, Honey. I know you are focused on getting Ashland through this and staying positive, but you have to look after yourself, too. I mean, you’re gonna need all of your strength and then some.

Victoria: Mother, I am aware. Thank you for always looking out for me.

Nikki: Well, if you ever want to talk about it, I am here for you.

Victoria: Okay. I’m fine, though, really. I have high hopes for this new treatment.

Nikki: I am praying that it will turn things around for Ashland. I don’t want to see your heart broken.

Victoria: Well, I’m not gonna dwell on that. I’m — I’m very optimistic that it might work.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Nikki: Oh. Oh, it’s your father. Hi, darling. What? Oh, my god. Oh, how horrible. What can I do? Just tell me. Yes, yes, I understand. Okay, bye.

Victoria: What is it?

Nikki: Abby just got word that Chance might have been killed while doing undercover work.

Victoria: Oh, my goodness, this is so tragic. Poor Abby.

Nikki: Victor thinks she’s in shock.

Victoria: Well, yes, how could she not be? To get this kind of news and she’s caring for a newborn? We should go over there and we should help her.

Nikki: Well, he’s there with her and Ashley is there. He says she’s overwhelmed and doesn’t want any more visitors. Victor’s gonna wait there with her until they hear more news. But this has not been officially confirmed, so for now, we’re keeping it private.

Victoria: Of course. Gosh, Mom, my heart goes out to her. Abby must be so devastated.

Ashland: [ Exhales sharply ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Lily: Look, just forget Gaines, forget Ashland, okay? We will beat the Newmans ourselves by being better, smarter, savvier, okay? We don’t need anyone or anything else.

Billy: Okay, but, Lily —

Lily: No, Billy, this is what I’m sayin–

[ Knock on door ]

Billy: Must be the kids.

Lily: Yeah.

Billy: What the hell?

Gaines: Please, I have nowhere else to go. I’m not safe. Can you hide me?

Nick: What do you mean this isn’t gonna work? You know what? You can’t say something like that and just walk off without explaining yourself.

Phyllis: That’s all I do is explain myself to you.

[ Scoffs ] I’m being the loving and the doting girlfriend, but you just treat me with disdain.

Nick: Loving and doting? That’s what you think you’re being by making jokes at my father’s expense in front of my mother, with Jack having a front-row seat and you rubbing your obvious flirtation in my face.

Phyllis: Oh, wait, wait. That’s not flirtation.

Nick: Then what is it? Because as far as I can tell, every time we have the smallest of conflicts, you go running off to Jack.

Phyllis: You want to know why I go running to Jack? Because if we’re not having sex or playing video games, you treat me horribly. You push me away. It’s like you don’t even care about my opinions or my ideas.

Nick: Because your opinions are always saying that I should ignore my family or completely disengage from them, and that is not an option.

Phyllis: Oh, my god, that is such a lie! I am turning myself into a pretzel helping you deal with your family.

Nick: By asking me to cut myself off from them. You have no appreciation for how hard that would be for me.

Phyllis: My god, don’t even say that to me!

[ Exhales sharply ] You think that I don’t know what it’s like being connected to the Newman family? My advice comes from hard-learned truths. Being associated with single members of your family, particularly your father, so don’t you dare say that to me. Have sympathy for me! Okay? But you don’t, and it doesn’t matter. I turn the other cheek because i want to be with you.

Nick: Oh, don’t do me any favors. You pretending to be superior or taking the high road is absurd.

Phyllis: Okay, this is not gonna work. It’s over. It’s done. Seriously. We keep on telling each other that we don’t have to change, but you see, Nick, I’ve changed. I want more than sex and video games, and, oh, keeping it fluffy and light. I want more than that. I want a commitment, I want a confidant, I want someone who respects me. I want an ally.

Nick: And I want you to stop hating my family.

Phyllis: I hate your family. But not for the reasons that you think. I hate your family…’cause you always choose them over me.

Nick: I chose you over my sister when you had that battle for your hotel.

Phyllis: I know. I know you did, and that was great. It was great, and I thought there was gonna be a happy ending, but there’s not, because, look, you’re so miserable. You’re miserable because you’re out of sorts with your dad and your sister, and you’re so jealous of Adam. And you just want to be the golden boy. You just want to save the day. And you will always go back to roost, always. And you will sacrifice me and you will sacrifice our relationship because of it. I can’t do this anymore. I’m in so much pain. I can’t do this anymore.

[ Exhales sharply ]

Devon: I can’t believe it. I just can’t believe that chance could be dead.

Mariah: “Could be”? Christine brought definitive proof — the watch, the wedding ring.

Tessa: I mean, it’s still a possibility that he survived the explosion. He might’ve just not been wearing them when it happened.

Mariah: Do you believe that?

Devon: Abby does. And I think that she’s really gonna need our help accepting the truth if she’s wrong.

Ashley: Bye, sharon. Thanks again.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Sharon is a good listener. Hopefully she was able to help abby.

Ashley: I hope so. I hope abby can get some sleep. I hate this, feeling so helpless.

Victor: I know, I know. Been a long time since I’ve seen you helpless.

Ashley: I could say the same thing about you. You, who always controls every single situation.

Victor: You know, all the money and power I have means nothing right now. I so want to be able to fix it for her.

Ashley: I do, too.

Victor: Yeah.

Ashley: She’s in agony. Poor thing. She’s just suffering, and there’s nothing I can do to alleviate it. It’s like a mother’s worst nightmare.

Mariah: Look at you. You are such a brave little boy. Too bad that you’ve had to be. You had to be bombarded by my stress hormones when we were in that room, and I did my best to keep my fear and anxiety to a minimum, ’cause I knew when i got upset, it would make you feel upset. Do you think he’s okay?

Tessa: I mean, he was cooing just a minute ago. I think he’s perfect in every way. But, mariah, I think that this situation might have brought up some trauma for you.

Victor: I think you should know that I called nate hastings, okay? I asked him to be here. I think we need to have a doctor around. Especially someone who knows abby and knows the family, and I’d rather err on the side of caution, you know?

Ashley: Think that’s a good idea?

Victor: Yeah.

Ashley: I hope it’s not necessary.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Ashley: I mean, look, I know it’s not rational to think that maybe abby would have a break with reality the way that I did, but I can’t help but be a little afraid.

Victor: I remember that.

Ashley: Well…

Victor: Hope she doesn’t have to go through that. But if she does, you and I will be here to help her through it.

Ashley: Yeah. Whether she wants us to or not.

Victor: And when she gets to the other side of it, hopefully soon, she’ll realize that you and I did not abandon her.

Devon: Yeah, no, I know what you mean, but, you know, we have to trust that ashley and the rest of the family are gonna be able to take care of dominic while abby’s going through all this.

Tessa: He’s going to be loved and taken care of.

Devon: There’s really nothing to worry about at all. You know he’s in good hands.

Tessa: They’re not gonna let anything bad happen to him, and I’m not gonna let anything bad happen to you. So maybe we can go back to our hotel and just rest up a little bit?

Mariah: Yes. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Soon, though, ’cause while dominic’s here, I want to stay. I want to be here if he needs me.

[ Door closes ]

Victor: Nate. Thank you for coming on such short notice, okay?

Nate: Of course. How is abby?

Victor: Not well. Sharon was with her earlier and thought that she was in a state of denial. She’s in the kitchen right now with ashley making some tea. If you don’t mind my saying so, I think that she may need some, you know, low-dose anti-anxiety pills. But that’s your expertise.

Nate: Whatever abby needs, I’m here for.

Victor: Now, ashley and abby will return momentarily, so make yourself comfortable. If you need me, I’ll be in the den, alright? Thanks, man.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

[ Clears throat ]

[ Exhales sharply ]

Abby: Nate, what are you doing here?

Nate: Hey, I’m sorry to hear about what you’re going through.

Abby: Did they call you to give me a sedative or something?

Ashley: Maybe this isn’t a good time.

Abby: What my mom is trying to say is that sharon just left, and that was enough. I don’t need a doctor.

Nate: You’re right, I was called here as a doctor, but as your friend, I’ve been where you are. I just came by to talk, see how you were doing.

Abby: That’s all?

Nate: You don’t even have to respond if you don’t want to. Just hang out with me for a few minutes.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Mom, I’m gonna talk to nate. Could you just stay close by?

[ Sighs ]

Nate: [ Clears throat ] You think chance is still out there.

Abby: You said that like a statement, not a question. And this isn’t a matter of denial. Look, yes, they found his watch and ring at the explosion site, but they didn’t find him. So I can hear the news and I can hold his ring in my hand. But in my heart, I just — I don’t think…he’s alive. I know it. He’s not dead.

Devon: So ashley just said that nate is there with abby right now.

Tessa: Oh, that’s good. He’s a calming presence.

Devon: Yeah. And abby is asking me to bring the baby back home.

Mariah: Do you think that’s a good idea?

Devon: I do, actually, ’cause his mother and his grandparents are ready to take care of him.

Tessa: Yeah, he belongs at home.

Mariah: Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. You sure you don’t need help getting him back to the chancellor house?

Devon: No, no, I’m fine. I appreciate it. I left bread crumbs.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ]

Tessa: Can I take you back to our suite now?

Devon: I promise you, you have nothing to worry about. That little boy knows what strength and safety feels like because you protected him for all that time. Don’t forget that. Let some other people look after him now.

Mariah: Okay. Let’s go. Alright, buddy. I’ll see you soon, okay?

Nate: I know how you feel. You know I lost my fiancéE. I remember how hard it was having to admit she was gone.

Abby: Yeah, you told me how awful that was for you. But this is not the same situation. You — you saw carolyn. You knew the truth. I don’t have that. Yes, other people think chance is gone, but…I can’T.

Nate: Yeah, I get it. Having to accept the news or the evidence that they’ve given you, your husband can’t come back, right? I think it’s common when we lose someone abruptly like this. We don’t want to let go of hope.

Abby: No, I can’t let go. And, yes, I have had my moments of doubt, like when christine gave me this. But I was in shock. And now I see things clearly. I mean, really, nothing has really changed. I mean, chance was gone before, and he’s — he’s still gone now, but…you know, he promised that he was gonna come home. And he iS. I know he is. So what I really need now is to just have faith in my husband and have faith in us.

Nate: Yeah. I understand.

Abby: Oh, stop. Stop trying to placate me.

Nate: [ Sighs ] Don’t settle. Start your day with secret.

Nate: Can you hear yourself?

Abby: Well, it’s normal to get defensive when people refuse to believe what you’re saying.

Nate: It’s also normal to overreact when you’re running on fumes. Have you eaten?

Abby: I had a sandwich earlier.

Nate: Really? Or is that you’re telling everyone? Look, if what you’re saying is true and chance is still out there, then you owe it to him and the baby to stay healthy. When did you last sleep?

Abby: That doesn’t matter.

Nate: It does. You need to eat and you need some rest. I’m having some anti-anxiety medication delivered. It’s a low dose, but it’ll calm you down and help you sleep.

Abby: Look, I appreciate it, but I need to stay alert and awake, for dominic.

Ashley: Honey. I promise that I’m gonna be right here for the baby as soon as devon brings him back home, okay? Could you please go upstairs and sleep?

Abby: Fine, fine, but I’m gonna rest here on the couch in the living room. That way, I’m close by in case we hear anything.

Ashley: Yes. Please just close your eyes and rest.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ]

Sharon: Oh, hi, devon.

Devon: Hey, sharon. How’d everything go with abby?

Sharon: Um…well, you know the stages of grief, right?

Devon: I do.

Sharon: And the first one is denial. That’s right where she’s stuck, and I’m afraid that it’s gonna take her a while to get out of it.

Devon: You think she’s that bad?

Sharon: I really wish that we could fix someone with just a touch or a word, I mean, especially in times like these. It’s so frustrating. She won’t even talk about her feelings. She won’t acknowledge them. There’s just nothing I can do.

Devon: I know. I do know. But I think that I may have something that will bring you some joy.

Mariah: No, no, there’s no need to send this to jack. Why don’t I take a look at the numbers and see if I can 5% out of the budget? And if I can’t, then I can bring him in. Okay? Yeah, give me like 30 minutes. Cool. Bye.

[ Sighs ]

Tessa: Everything okay at work?

Mariah: Yeah, it’s fine. I’m just trying to distract myself with budgets and deadlines.

Tessa: But your mind is really elsewhere?

Mariah: Yeah. On the baby. I just — I hate leaving him. What?

Tessa: Nothing.

Mariah: You’re staring at me.

Tessa: I mean, I find you very attractive.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Thank you. I appreciate that. But…it’s not why you’re looking at me. I promise you I am fighting all of my urges when it comes to the baby, but you still think I’m slipping, am I right?

Tessa: I’m a little worried. You got pretty worked up at crimson lights. It seems as if you feel you are the only one who can properly take care of dominic.

Mariah: I can’t help wanting to be there for him. I thought you understood that i have a bond with dominic.

Tessa: I do. But I’m concerned that that urge, that instinct to just wrap him up and shield him from danger, it’s — it’s gonna cause you pain. And that really breaks my heart.

Nate: So you were hungry.

Abby: I was. And, um…sure, I will take the medication. But honestly, I’m feeling tired, so I think that I’ll be able to get some rest on my own.

Nate: That’d be good. I just want to tell you i understand how much chance meant to you. When you and I were together, you made it clear you didn’t want anything serious because you weren’t ready, after your prior relationship had fallen apart. And then chance came into your life. I watched as you fell hard and fast. That love is still there, and it will always be a part of you.

Abby: Thank you, but, uh, you’re speaking like it’s already over. Like we know chance is gone. But we don’t know that. No one knows that for certain.

Nate: You’re right. My mistake. Get some rest, abby.

Abby: Chance, you can’t be gone. With downy infusions, let the scent set the mood.

Victor: Thank you for coming, nate.

Nate: I hope I was of some help.

Victor: You bet.

Nate: The medication i ordered should be delivered soon. Make sure abby follows the instructions.

Ashley: Absolutely.

Victor: Appreciate it.

Ashley: Thanks again.

Victor: Thank you.

Ashley: [ Sighs ]

Victor: [ Sighs ] You need some rest, okay?

Ashley: Mm, I’m too wound up. I think I’m gonna make some food. If we eat it, great. If we don’t, that’s okay, too. I just got to keep myself busy.

Victor: Okay.

Ashley: You’ll watch over her?

Victor: You bet.

Ashley: Thanks.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Abby: Chance, where are you? I know you wouldn’t leave me when we just started a family. So that means that you’re out there. So I’ll find you.

Sharon: Who’s a big boy? Who’s a big, happy, smiley boy?

[ Both laugh ] You were right, devon. Just spending a few moments with him, and I’m in a better mood.

Devon: I know. He really is magic.

Sharon: And hopefully he can bring some of that joy to his mother. She really needs it.

Devon: I know she does. I actually have dominic right now because abby didn’t want him around her in the state that she’s in. I was just about to bring him home before you came back.

Sharon: He’s lucky he has you in his life. You can look after him.

Devon: I’d argue and say that I’m the lucky one, sharon. Just getting to spend time with him and getting to learn about him and all of his, you know, different moods and different expressions. It’s like making up for the time that I never got to spend with my child with hilary. I missed out on a lot.

Sharon: Kind of like how dominic will miss out on spending time with chance. You two are a perfect match.

Devon: Yeah, I guess so. I just wish it didn’t have to be this way. Chance never getting to meet his son and abby never getting to say goodbye to her husband, it’s just — it’s unfair to everyone.

Tessa: Was that too much honesty?

Mariah: No. I needed to know if I was reverting back with the baby, and I guess I was.

Tessa: I know I probably shouldn’t be worried, but I am.

Mariah: I know. And I love you for that. But I really don’t think you need to be.

Tessa: But am I right?

Mariah: About what?

Tessa: Do you think that you’re the only one who can properly take care of dominic?

Mariah: [ Sighs ] I — I can’t say that for sure. I mean, of course there are other people who are qualified to take care of him, but…

Tessa: You think your connection to him counts for more.

Mariah: No, I didn’t say that.

Tessa: You didn’t have to. I know you.

Mariah: I’m the one who carried him for all those months, who felt him growing and changing inside of me. I was the one who was with him all the time when we were locked in that room.

Tessa: Those were unique experiences that will give you two a lifelong bond. But other people have special connections to dominic.

Mariah: I understand, tessa. Abby is his mother, but she needs a break right now. And of course dominic wouldn’t be here without devon’s contribution, but I — it’s not the same as mine, and ashley and nina love their grandson.

Tessa: But not the way you do.

Mariah: I don’t know if they could.

Tessa: You realize that’s not your call to make?

Mariah: Yes, of course. Abby gets to decide. Even if she’s not in the best frame of mind to make decisions right now.

Tessa: Again, that’s not for you to judge. Even if abby isn’t 100% right now, dominic is not going to be neglected.

Mariah: Tessa, I understand that there are plenty of other people who are qualified to take care of him. But I have thoughts and I have feelings, and…in my heart, I just… I just don’t think this is the way that it should be.

Abby: This is where I first saw you when you came back to town. Phillip chancellor iv. Fancy name for a down-to-earth guy. It was here. You came back to town and fell into my life. The hostage crisis, remember? Yeah, you sent me a text and you asked me to play along. You wanted me to help you distract the bad guy. It was terrifying and thrilling. I looked over at the security camera and I nodded to let you know that we were in sync. Chance, I need you here. I need you here watching me. Show me that we’re in this together.

Sharon: Abby has to find a way to move on from chance. I’m afraid that’s gonna be hard with the baby around the house. She’ll have to focus on the beginning of the baby’s life while trying to move on from the end of chance’S.

Devon: Yeah, that doesn’t sound easy.

Sharon: Well, ideally, the baby would help her get past the grief, you know, would give her a purpose. But sometimes when you suffer a loss like this, it can be hard just to get out of bed.

Devon: Oh, believe me, I know exactly what you’re talking about. I fell apart when I lost hilary.

Sharon: Well, when you have to take care of another human being, that can give you a reason to take your life back. You know, you have no choice. You have to raise a baby.

Devon: Yeah. I mean, you and I know that, sharon. I just hope that abby doesn’t go through a self-destructive phase. ‘Cause like you said, she has to be there for dominic.

Sharon: She’s only at the beginning of what lies ahead for her and the baby.

Abby: This is where you busted me for faking a theft at the grand phoenix. You caught me red-handed. But we had chemistry. And it was fun and flirtatious and sexy. And we agreed that we would make great partners, remember? So I hired you as head of security at the hotel to keep you from working dangerous cases. You were supposed to leave the danger behind. You were supposed to stay in genoa city with me. Our first kiss. [ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] We were so good together. You confessed that you spent the whole dinner wanting to reach across the table and kiss me. I wanted that, too.

[ Sniffles ] So please, chance, come kiss me now.

[ Wind blowing ] Chance? Chance?! We came here after that date where we went ice skating. It was freezing outside. It was the first time that we made love. Remember that?

[ Sighs ] Of course you do. I skipped work and we laid in bed all day and we traded stories about our scars. Yours were from cases. Danger that you were supposed to leave behind. Chance, how could you go back to that? How could you stay away for so long? Damn it, chance! You made promises. You made promises right here. On our wedding day. You told me that I changed you. And we made vows and we talked about our future. A family. How could you leave? How could you just leave me and have me go through with the surrogacy? No. No, you are too good and you are too honest for it to end this way. So I know that you are gonna keep your word. Chance, if there’s a reason why you can’t come back, if there’s something preventing you from coming home, I will help you. I will find you.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Tessa: So you think that dominic would rather have you take care of him.

Mariah: No, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m only trying to say that i have feelings. I know you and devon are worried about my attachment to the baby, but I’m not even thinking about what I want or need. This is about him. He just lost a father that he’s never going to know. He’s living in a house of grief and trauma.

Tessa: He is safe. He is cared for.He is loved.

Mariah: I know, but this is not the life that I promised him when we were locked in that room together. This wasn’t the deal.

Tessa: I get that. But no one expected any of this. Abby certainly didn’t want things to turn out this way, but life is unpredictable. You can’t control the future.

Mariah: No, but there are some things that I can control. I can keep him safe.

Tessa: There’s nothing you can do about his father dying unexpectedly.

Mariah: That is exactly why i feel like I have failed, tessa. I didn’t protect him.

Nate: Hey, guys. I just saw abby.

Sharon: Nate, I hope things went better for you with her than they did for me.

Devon: How’s she doing?

Nate: I’m worried. She’s been under long-term stress with her husband gone, brand-new baby, mariah’s abduction. Now the biggest crisis of all. It’s a lot to handle mentally, and eventually it starts to break you down physically. Right now she needs rest and nourishment. Luckily, I was able to convince her into eating something and taking a nap.

Devon: Well, that’s a good sign.

Nate: It is, but it’s just a start.

Sharon: Well, it won’t take the grief away, but maybe she’ll be able to face it.

Devon: Hey, what do you — what do you think about me bringing dominic back to the house and her being around the baby?

Nate: Think it’d be a good idea.

Devon: ‘Cause I’m worried. I’m worried about him absorbing all that negative energy in the house.

Nate: Uh, it’s a concern, but it’s a question of balance. It’ll be good for abby to see him. Plus, she has plenty of family there if she gets emotional. So shouldn’t be an issue. Dominic will be in good hands.

Devon: Alright, that’s good to hear. I’ll take him back, but I’ll probably — I’ll stop and take him for a walk in the park first.

Mariah: I agreed to be abby and chance’s surrogate. I was happy to do it. I was carrying that baby because I thought that I was helping to build a family. Mom, dad, baby — the three of them together. And he was gonna have a golden childhood, doting parents. And now he’s surrounded by grief and loss, and I didn’t keep my promise to always protect him.

Tessa: Yes, you have. You’ve gone above and beyond for him. You even turned down a trip to italy just to be around to make sure he’s okay.

Mariah: I am his godmother. I’m a friend of the family, and I can’t even be there for him the way that I should be because I’m not his…

Tessa: Are you saying that you wish he was your son and not abby’s?

Mariah: I just can’t help thinking that that’s the way that it — it should’ve been. That I should be his mom.

Tessa: I don’t know what to say.

Mariah: I’m not acting on that feeling, and I know it’s fear talking. I know it’s my own issues. But you asked what’s going on in my head and my heart, and i wanted to be completely honest with you, and…

[ Sighs ] It’s not right and it’s not rational. I know that. But it’s a fleeting thought that comes into my brain once in a while, and — and…it’s there.

Tessa: Well…let’s examine that and then figure out how to proceed.

Mariah: Uh, I thought you were gonna run out of here and head screaming for the hills.

Tessa: Never.

Mariah: My god, you have the patience of a saint.

Tessa: True, but…only with you. Because I love you.

Mariah: I love you, too.

Tessa: So…we are gonna work through this together.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Mariah: Um… oh, my gosh, it’s work. They need these numbers. I…I should probably do this.

Tessa: I mean, you really have to do that right now?

Mariah: It’s only gonna take a few minutes.

Abby: Everything always leads me back here, doesn’t it? Why doesn’t it do the same for you? How can you stay away? This is where I first told you that I loved you. And where you proposed. This place — this place has special meaning to us. Chancellor park. You wouldn’t just leave this behind. I know that you’re here.

Jack: Well, great minds think alike.

Nikki: Well, hell.

Jack: I’m glad I ran into you.

Nikki: Oh, yeah?

Jack: Well, I’ve been looking for a chance to tell you how impressed I was with the job you did organizing victoria and ashland’s wedding.

Nikki: Thank you so much, jack. I was just relieved that everything went smoothly.

Jack: You made it look effortless. No small feat. I have some idea of how much planning goes into that, and, wow, it was worth it. A delight, beginning to end.

Nikki: Well, I wanted to do it for them. They’ll always have those memories.

Jack: And those memories are important, especially given the special challenge those two are facing.

Nikki: Yes. I am grateful that victoria was able to convince ashland to fight his cancer. I know how difficult the treatment has been.

Jack: Well, we’re all praying those treatments are effective. I saw in italy the reunion between ashland and harrison, and it brought home just how close those two are. It’s a lot for my grandson to understand and accept if things don’t go as we hoped.

Nikki: Oh, god, I hate to think what that would do to victoria. I have to admit, I had reservations about this pairing in the beginning.

Jack: Given the groom’s well-deserved reputation as a ruthless businessman? Yeah, I got to see a little bit of that when he came after jabot.

Nikki: Well, he seems completely devoted to victoria, and that’s something that has been lacking in her life.

Jack: But you’re still worried about the heartache she could be facing.

Nikki: She’s a realist. She knows loss is a possibility.

Jack: Well, I respect that courage. Nothing is more important than the time we spend with those we love, even if that time is fleeting. She seems to have internalized that. I mean, she doesn’t seem to have any regrets.

Nikki: I haven’t heard any, but…

Jack: But as a devoted mother, you can’t help worrying.

Nikki: Well, it’s one thing to take those vows — “in sickness and in health” — but it’s quite another to navigate a possibly fatal disease. With all the whirl of the wedding prep and finalizing the merger, I don’t know that victoria has had time to sit down and really think about what could happen. But it’s gonna hit her eventually, and honestly, I’m dreading it.

Victor: Do you think that is chance’s ring?

Abby: [ Gasps ]

Victor: Sweetheart.

Abby: [ Sobbing ]

Victor: It’s okay, my love. It’s okay.

Adam: Hi, there. Was it something that I said?

Sally: I’m just trying to determine which one of your multiple personalities I’m dealing with. It’s a little guessing game i play with myself.

Adam: Oh. I see.

Sally: ‘Cause sometimes I’m almost certain that I’ve run into friendly, funny, down-to-earth adam, and then, no, he turns out to be

[Clears throat] Officious adam, busy ceo and all-around important guy with no time to waste on a lowly peon like me.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I was — I was too abrupt with you yesterday. Although I did apologize, or try to.

Sally: Ah, yes, mea culpa adam. An intriguing new addition to the cast of characters.

Adam: How many are there?

Sally: It’s an ever-changing landscapE.

Adam: Wow. You know, that, it sounds kind of fascinating.

Sally: Fortunately, there is a fool-proof way to settle this. I will just invite to join me for lunch and see which adam fields the request.

Adam: I’d love to have lunch with you, but I’m booked today. I am actually here for a meeting.

Sally: Damn. I knew it. Now I owe myself 20 bucks.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: You’re hesitating. Why? It’s a simple question. Are we in this together or not?

Phyllis: No, I’m just thrown that you even have to ask me that. Of course I’m in this with you. Why do you think I’m working so hard? I mean, it doesn’t feel good now, but it will turn out good. I know that.

Nick: Agreed.

Phyllis: Can we table this? I…I’m still sort of hung over from last night. I’m not at my best.

Nick: Yeah, to be continued.

Phyllis: Thank you.

Nick: Well, I bet our brunch is cold. How about if I take you out to lunch?

Sally: Wow, smooth. You’re really good at this. All sounds so mysterious. Makes me wonder if it has something to do with that missing man, the one that billy was talking about. What was his name again, hanes? No, oh, gaines. Oops. Guess I wasn’t supposed to bring his name up anymore.

Nikki: Well, this has been such a great break, but I really need to get back to the office.

Jack: You know what? I came here to get a sandwich to take it back to the office and sit at my desk and eat lunch. To heck with that. What do you say you and I have a proper lunch together?

Nikki: I’d love to.

Jack: Fantastic. You pick the place. Though I hear there’s a great little moroccan place that just opened over on chestnut.

Nikki: Alright, now, wait a minute. You didn’t give me a chance to say “but.” I have a full inbox I have to get back to.

Jack: Oh, that will keep, i promise you.

Nikki: Jack.

Jack: Hey, we have just pulled off — you and I — one of the most satisfying feats in all of parenthood — launching our children off into fulfilling marriages with people they love and cherish.

Nikki: [ Laughs ] Well, I don’t know if we can take credit for that.

Jack: Yeah, maybe not, but we could use this opportunity to celebrate our great good fortune.

Nikki: Well, you put it that way, it’s hard to refuse. So I won’T. I’d love to have lunch with you, jack.

Jack: Fantastic.

Nikki: [ Chuckles ] But society is closer to newman tower, so do you mind going there?

Jack: Society it is. Shall we?

Victor: I know how difficult this is for you, my sweetheart. We’ll take care of you, okay?

Abby: [ Sniffles ] This doesn’t — this can’t be real. There’s got to be some sort of explanation. Chance — he can’t be gone.

Ashley: Hey.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart.

Ashley: What is it? Is something going on?

Victor: A wedding ring was discovered and recovered in the rubble. And christine gave it to abby.

Ashley: Oh, god, no.

Victor: Belongs to chance.

Ashley: But that’s not necessarily proof, is it? I mean, he could’ve taken it off. Did they find anything else?

Christine: I was informed that being a married man was part of chance’s cover story, so he never took it off.

Ashley: Has search and rescue found anything?

Christine: Ashley, given the force of the explosion, positive identification of any of the remains is just gonna take some time.

Ashley: Abby. Honey? Honey, I’m right here.

[ Dominic crying ]

Devon: It’s okay.

Abby: [ Sniffles ] Oh, dominic. Shh.

[ Sniffles ] It’s gonna be okay.

Adam: I noticed you ordered your food to go. Hope that wasn’t on my account.

Sally: I had already planned on working through lunch. I am still getting inquiries about victoria’s wedding dress.

Adam: Well, I’m not surprised about that.

Sally: But this kind of response from the fashion press and retail buyers, not to mention the dozens of brides that somehow got my work e-mail and are now clamoring for a copy. It’s just far beyond anything i ever envisioned.

Adam: Well, it sounds incredibly gratifying.

Sally: It is. It’s like a big, flashing neon sign telling me that I was right not to give up on my creative endeavors.

Adam: Well, speaking for newman fashions, it’s a good thing that you didn’t because I’m really looking forward to seeing what you and chloe come up with next.

Sally: What about chelsea? When she comes back in town, is she still planning on coming on board? ‘Cause it would be really great to have another fashion genius in the house to kick around ideas.

Adam: Um, I don’t know when or if chelsea’s gonna be up to working again.

Sally: Should I not have mentioned anything?

Adam: No, it’s fine. I hope she comes back to genoa city and she’s ready to pick up her life again. Sooner the better, as far as I’m concerned, so we can move on and — and, um… well, the person that I’m meeting with has arrived, so…

Sally: And looks like my food is here, so have fun with your not-at-all mysterious meeting.

Adam: Thanks. I’ll catch you later.

Sally: Thank you.

Ashley: You guys, I think abby could use a little space.

Devon: Okay, how about I take dominic out for a walk, then, for a little bit?

Mariah: Fresh air, I’m in.

Ashley: That’s a great idea. It’s nice outside.

Abby: No, please —

Ashley: Abby, honey. Everybody loves that little boy so much. They’re gonna take such good care of him, okay? Just like your father and I are gonna take good care of you.

Devon: Hey, we’re not gonna be gone long, I promise you.

Abby: Okay, um, use an extra blanket.

Devon: Sure, of course.

Mariah: Of course. Try to rest, okay?

Abby: Yeah.

Victor: Can you stick around? I have some questions, okay?

Christine: Sure, of course.

Devon: Hey, would you mind grabbing the diaper bag?

Mariah: Uh, yeah, absolutely.

Devon: Come on.

Phyllis: A flaming gorilla? Ooh, I want that. They put rum on top and then they set it on fire. I want a drink that’s on fire. Hey, if you clench your jaw a little harder, we’re gonna need an emergency dentist. What’s adam up to?

Nick: It’s who he’s with.

Phyllis: Who is that guy?

Nick: That’s one of my dad’s most trusted private investigators. He’s been on his security team for, like, ever. You see the way they’re talking and their body language? They’re clearly scheming about something and they’re not even trying to hide it.

Phyllis: Mm. Mm-hmm.

Nick: What’s that? “Mm-hmm,” what is that?

Phyllis: It’s just “uh-huh.” You know what it is. Come on. I’m not gonna say anything. I’m not gonna do that, because we’ve just gone through it this morning. I’m not gonna continue a pattern, you know, when you ask me what’s going on, and I say something supportive about you, and then you misinterpret and then we get into it. Hey, I’m gonna change the pattern. That’s refreshing, right?

Nick: I don’t want you to feel like you’re on eggshells around me. I want you to feel free to speak your mind.

Phyllis: Oh, do you?

Nick: Yes.

Phyllis: Really, you do? Okay, alright. Well, remember you said that.

Nick: I’m serious. If you got something to say, then say it. I’m not gonna hold it against you. I would like your unvarnished opinion.

Phyllis: You want my unvarnished opinion. Okay. Remember that you said that. Who cares what’s going on over there? Who cares who adam is talking to and what they’re up to? Can you just let it go and put your attention on us? Can you do that? My hygienist cleans with a round head.

Phyllis: Okay, I see you don’t love my suggestion. No problem.

Nick: Alright, do you remember how annoyed you were with me when I kept telling you to back off sally and tara, but you ended up being right about them?

Phyllis: Not even the same. I was trying to protect our daughter is what I was doing. What are you protecting? I mean, who cares what your dad and adam are plotting? Who cares?

Nick: [ Sighs ] Well, that’s not the way I look at it.

Phyllis: You know what? For once, you know what I would love? That you protect yourself. You protect yourself and just take yourself out of this situation. That’s all. I mean, that’s the advice I gave you in italy, and you didn’t take it then. I don’t really expect you to take it now, but you asked how i felt, and so I’m telling you. That’s all. Who cares about your dad and adam? Let them deal with the consequences of their shady dealings.

Nick: Do you know how many times I’ve tried that? More times than I can count. Ultimately, things always get blown up into this massive crisis, and then I get sucked right back in ’cause I got to protect the people I love, which is my sisters and my mother and my children. So don’t you think it’s best if I do everything I can to avert the mess that is brewing rather than wait for the other shoe to drop?

Phyllis: No. I think that you would be better if you only intermittently obsess with your family. That’s all. I’d be happy if, between disasters, you put more attention on our relationship. That’s all.

Nick: You know what? Let’s, uh… let’s get out of here. There’s lots of other places in town to eat lunch.

Phyllis: Seriously?

Nick: Yeah. I promised you a, you know, a nice time where we’re not worrying about everything that’s going on with us. That’s not gonna happen here because of adam. So let’s go.

Phyllis: Alright.

Jack: Hey!

Nikki: Hi.

Jack: Having lunch at the bar today?

Nikki: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: Yeah. I mean, we were, but we’re gonna change venues. Adam’s here, and I don’t really want to stick around, so…

Nikki: Oh, well, I hope you’ll reconsider. Jack and I are just grabbing a bite. Why don’t you join us, as long as jack doesn’t mind?

Jack: Not in the least.

Phyllis: Is that a singular “you” or a plural “you”?

Nikki: Uh…oh, “will you have lunch?” Plural, of course. Why?

Phyllis: Okay. I just — I didn’t know because our history, that’s all.

Nikki: Well, we got along very well in italy. And I must admit, I do have an ulterior motive.

Phyllis: Of course.

Nikki: Well, I’m hoping to convince my son to settle his differences with victoria, and i think I’ll have a better shot at it if I have your support.

Phyllis: Oh, yes, definitely. A double-team.

Nick: Look, I appreciate the offer, but phyllis and I need to talk about some stuff and —

Phyllis: You know what? I would love it if you made peace with your sister. Really, so thank you for the invitation. We’ll accept.

Christine: Well, I’m afraid that’s really all the information I have at this point.

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ] When do you anticipate getting an official notification?

Christine: Days, maybe longer. It just depends on the recovery effort. In the meantime, I’ll keep working my contacts in D.C.

Victor: Please keep me updated.

Christine: Absolutely.

Victor: Okay.

Christine: I trust you’ll do the same.

Victor: You can count on it, okay?

Christine: Thank you.

Victor: By the way, are you gonna contact nina?

Christine: Uh…yeah. It’s gonna be rough. You know, chance — chance was the light of her life.

Victor: I know. I know. You know, um…he was a hell of a guy. I was proud to call him my son-in-law.

Christine: Again, victor, I’m so sorry for your loss, and if there’s anything more I can do, please don’t hesitate to call.

Victor: You do the same, okay? Take care.

Christine: Yeah, thank you.

Victor: I’ll get the door.

Ashley: Do you want to lie down? I can go upstairs and I can lie down with you and hold you like I used to do when you were a little girl.

Abby: [ Sniffles ]

Ashley: Everybody’s gone and it’s just your dad and I here, so if you need anything or want anything, and you know what, abby? You don’t have to rein it in. If you want to scream at the top of your lungs, if you want to stand up and if you want to just tear this entire room apart, you can do whatever you want. Please just tell us what you need, honey.

[ Sighs ] Oh, my god.

Ashley: What?

Abby: She’s gonna be heartbrokeN. I mean, she loves him so much. He’s — he’s her baby. Same way I feel about dominic.

Ashley: She’s our family now, honey. We’ll make sure she knows she doesn’t have to go through this alone, okay?

[ Doorbell rings ]

Abby: Oh, god.

Victor: I’ll get it. I’ll get it.

Abby: I don’t want to see anyone.

Victor: I’ll get it.

Abby: Oh, my god.

Victor: Sharon.

Sharon: Mariah texted me chance may have been killed.

Victor: Come in.

[ Sighs ] There was an explosion at the safe house where chance was doing his undercover work in spain.

Sharon: A bomb?

Victor: Yeah. Place was blown to smithereens. The only things left over were some personal effects.

Sharon: I’m so sorry.

Ashley: Hi.

Victor: Sharon came to offer some comfort to abby, okay?

Ashley: Oh, that’s very kind of you. Um…abby’s in shock. I’m not even sure if anything we’re saying is registering with her.

Sharon: I understand. Trauma like this can be very disorienting.

Victor: I know sharon offered some enormous support to victoria after she had been attacked.

Ashley: I’m not sure how receptive she’ll be. I mean, she did say she wanted to be alone, but you’re more than welcome to make the attempt.

Sharon: I’ll try my best.

Victor: Okay.

Ashley: Thank you.

Mariah: Abby was such a wreck when we left. I really hope my mom can help her somehoW.

Tessa: It was an inspired move sending sharon over there, and hopefully she knows exactly what to say.

Mariah: I was at a loss.

Devon: Yeah, we all were.

Mariah: Abby and chance were so in love. I mean, they had so many plans for the life they wanted to live together, and then, what, it’s just — it’s gone in an instant?

Tessa: I can’t even imagine what that’s like. I mean, your whole world just crashing down on you and… devon, oh, my god, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to be insensitive. I mean, you know exactly what abby’s going through right now.

Devon: You’re fine, tessa. You’re not insensitive at all. It’s fine. You’re absolutely right that i do know, and it’s a feeling that I wouldn’t wish on anyonE.

Phyllis: The stew looks great. I like to try new things.

Jack: Yeah, there are a few new things on here, kind of a cuban-french fusion.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Nikki: I wonder what’s going on over there.

Phyllis: Nick was curious, too.

Jack: Okay, I’m feeling a little left out here. Who is that guy?

Nick: It’s a pi that dad has on retainer. They are no doubt talking about jesse gaines and his current whereabouts.

Jack: Okay, that name doesn’t ring any bells.

Nikki: It’s just someone ashland used to know.

Nick: It’s someone that despises ashland. He showed up in italy to disrupt the wedding, but I ran into him first, locked him in a room in the palazzo until the wedding was over.

Jack: Okay, I was at this wedding. I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. No wonder you were so relieved that the ceremony went off without a hitch.

Nikki: I didn’t know anything about it at the time either. In fact, I know very little now, and that suits me fine.

Nick: It’s a well-kept secret what happened to jesse gaines. I mean, no one has seen him in days. Dad had adam take care of him somehow.

Jack: When you say “take care of him”…

Phyllis: Well, no one knows what that really means, but…

Nikki: It’s nothing drastic.

Nick: Well, I thought you said you didn’t know what went down, mom.

Nikki: Your father happened to find some compromising information about him and used it to convince him to leave ashland alone.

Jack: Classic victor. I would expect nothing less of him.

Phyllis: Yeah, let’s just be glad it wasn’t anything worse.

Jack: Yeah, this is only slightly illegal.

Phyllis: Right, what’s a little blackmail between friends, right? You should be glad, jack, that you had nothing to do with it. Trust me, trust me, you’re better off.

Nick: Alright, you made your point. Let’s drop it. On the outside, I looked fine.

Nikki: Meeting adjourned.

Phyllis: Evidently.

Jack: So I’ve been playing this game online with harrison, you know, just to stay in touch. Kid is so clever. He’s been finding it easier and easier to beat me.

Nikki: Hmm. Why don’t you teach him to play chess?

Jack: I think he’s a little young for that. You guys are both gaming experts. Any recommendations?

Nick: Uh, the game that you’ve been playing with christian, with the racing cars and the animals are drivers. What’s that called?

Phyllis: I don’t know. You know, I’ll go on the internet and do some research, see if something jogs my memory.

Jack: Thanks. I appreciate that.

Phyllis: Sure. Oh, here’s a text from my assistant manager. I have to go. There’s an emergency. This has been lovely. Thank you.

Nikki: Oh. You’re welcome.

Nick: You want me to box up any of the lunch and bring it to you?

Phyllis: I’ll put that in your capable hands.

[ Clears throat ] Excuse me.

Nikki: Is everything okay between the two of you?

Nick: We’re fine.

Jack: You know what? I’m gonna get in touch with my assistant, as well. Got to push back a meeting. I’ll be right back.

Nikki: Okay. Darling, I don’t mean to pry, but it seems like things between you and phyllis are very tense.

Nick: Let’s get back to jesse gaines.

Nikki: Ugh, must we?

Nick: Yeah, I think it’d be a real mistake to look the other way this time, mom.

Nikki: It’s behind us, darling.

Nick: Really? Why would adam be talking to one of dad’s investigators?

Nikki: I don’t know. Why don’t you ask your brother?

Nick: I’m asking you. Dad and adam are keeping on the outside on this, but I know you can find out what’s going on.

Nikki: I would really rather stay out of it.

Nick: You know what that means, don’t you? You’re leaving victoria’s future and wellbeing in the hands of dad and adam. And given adam’s history, are you sure you’re comfortable with that?

Devon: You know how people always talk about grief as if it’s just one emotion? But you guys know that it’s so much more than that. It’s denial. It’s rage, loneliness, despair. The only way that I survived it was by having my family and my friends around me, and then eventually elena to help me, you know, get on track.

Tessa: Well, I’m thankful you did and that you’re happy again. And we just need to keep the faith, and eventually abby will get there, too, one day.

Devon: Yeah, I know she will. It’s just not gonna be easy for her.

Mariah: For dominic either. We saw the way that everything that’s happening has affected him. And abby’s emotions affect him.

Devon: That’s very true.

Mariah: I just have to wonder what kind of impact all of this stress is gonna have on him.

Sharon: Mariah told me the terrible news. Abby, I’m so sorry you have to go through this. And I’m here to listen, if you think it would help to talk.

Abby: I can’t right now yet.

Sharon: Okay, that’s okay. There are no rules. I’ll follow your lead. We can just sit here together, if you’d like.

Abby: Look, sharon, i understand that you are trying to help. But if I open that door, I… I might start screaming and never stop.

Sharon: Hey, you know what? In a situation like this, that’s a very normal fear.

Abby: Look, I have a baby to take care of. Chance is counting on me. Okay? I can’t fall apart. I can’t fall apart.

Sharon: Abby, I don’t see that happening. You’re not gonna fall apart. You might be tired and you need some rest. A shock to the system like this can be very hard on a person physically. But you’ve done it before. You made it through. You’ve suffered some really horrible losses and you survived — brad, colleen.

Abby: My baby girl.

Sharon: I know the kind of strength that it must have taken to carry on after that.

Abby: Chance helped me through that. He convinced me to have hope. He said that [Sniffles] I could be a mother and that we would have a long, happy life together. Why is this happening? Why?

[ Sniffles ]

[ Exhales sharply ] Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Devon: You’re right that abby is definitely gonna need help taking care of dominic while she’s recovering from all this, but she’s gonna have the help.

Tessa: Yeah, dominic’s nanny, ashley.

Devon: Exactly. And you know what? Honestly, I’m hoping that dominic becomes her source of comfort and her reason to get out of bed every day.

Mariah: Maybe. But we just don’t know yet. People react to trauma and grief in different ways.

Tessa: Well, I mean, that’s another reason why having sharon over there is really a good idea. She can keep her eyes open and let us know if there’s any cause for concern.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Abby: I hate that I can’t control my emotions.

Sharon: Hey. Honestly, it’s fine.

Abby: It happened earlier. When christine brought me chance’s wedding ring, I just — I lost it in front of everyone, including the baby. I just… I kept thinking about my husband in that explosion. Terrified and suffering. And I felt like I was falling, like I couldn’t find solid ground.

Sharon: As scary as that must have felt, that’s actually a really normal reaction to trauma.

Abby: How am I gonna go on without my husband? My son is never gonna get to meet his father. How am I gonna face that? I am so afraid.

Ashley: What are you doing?

Victor: We just need to help our daughter, sweetheart. Get her all the support we can.

Sally: How was your meeting?

Adam: Um…tedious.

Sally: Really?

Adam: How was your lunch?

Sally: Productive. And…well… you know what? Maybe I will just show you. Somehow the national inquisitor got some photos of us from tuscany insinuating that you and I are a thing.

Adam: Um…well, I’d say the only real surprise is it took them that long to get around to it.

Sally: Well, I just figured I’d give you a head’s up in case anybody saw it and expected you to comment.

Adam: Everything is…

[ Cellphone rings ] …Fine. It’s chelsea. That was fast.

Sally: Good luck.

Nikki: I hope you didn’t take it seriously before, what nicholas and phyllis were implying.

Jack: You mean about this gaines fellow?

Nikki: I mean, obviously, no harm could’ve come to him. They were just being overly dramatic.

Jack: Yeah, I feel for nicholas these days. Clearly under a lot of pressure. He’s not getting along with victoria or adam or victor.

Nikki: Or phyllis, apparently. How much do you know about the tension between them?

Jack: Maybe the less said, the better. They’ve hit a bump in the road. They’ll figure it out.

Nick: Problem solved?

Phyllis: Yeah.

[ Sighs ]

Nick: I wish you hadn’t left. Now I still owe you lunch.

Phyllis: You don’t owe me anything. It’s fine. I knew what I signed up for. I knew your family history. It didn’t matter to me because i love you and the whole thing is worth it. It was worth it.

Nick: You’re right, it was.

Phyllis: Who are we kidding? This isn’t gonna work.
