Jack: I got.

Phyllis: You don’t —

Jack: I got it.

Phyllis: You don’t have to do that.

[ Sighs ]

Jack: Seem a little flustered. Is it the fire you had to put out back at work? You kind of left the lunch with Nick and Nikki pretty quickly.

Phyllis: Yeah, I’m sorry about that.

Jack: It’s okay. Had to navigate the Newman waters all by myself.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, I’ve had to nav– navigate those choppy waters. You know, it’s — nothing is going on at work. It’s my life. I think Nick and I may have just broken up.

Nick: Sorry to drop by unannounced. I hope it’s not a bad time.

Sharon: No, not at all. Is everything okay?

Nick: Yeah, I just wanted to, you know, see how you two were doing and maybe faith.

Sharon: Well, you just missed her. She’s out studying for a test with Moses.

Nick: Oh, man, I feel like i have seen her so little lately.

Noah: Yeah, I just told mom I was gonna cook dinner. You want to join us?

Nick: You know, I’m good. I don’t have much of an appetite.

Sharon: I take it things didn’t go that well with Phyllis.

Nick: I don’t really want to get into it.

Noah: Yes, you do.

Nick: What I’d really like to do is hear how things are going with you, bud.

Noah: No, mnh-mnh. No, you don’t get to change the subject. You came here ’cause you wanted to talk. We want to listen, ’cause we’re your family, too.

Ashland: Hello, my beauty.

Victoria: Oh, hello, there. I’m so glad you’re here. I’m doing a deeper dive into the experimental treatment that we’ve been pursuing. Trying to find out if I have a connection to the hospital that’s funding the research.

Ashland: Oh, well, I’m one step ahead of you. I was able to secure an evaluation appointment at the clinic hosting the treatment.

Victoria: That’s fantastic.

Ashland: There’s just one hiccup, though. They had one opening for me that they could fit me into, and it’s coming up soon — as in I have to leave right now.

Victoria: You mean we’ve got to go. That’s fine. The sooner we get you signed up for the protocol,

Lily: I know. It’s so rare these days. Normally, your mind’s going 100 miles an hour. Even when you’re trying to unwind, your multi-tasker brain is at work.

Billy: It’s another positive effect that you have on me, learning to slow down and shut things off a little bit.

Lily: Mm-hmm. So you’re not secretly checking your phone under the table?

Billy: Uh, I am.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: I am busted. But you know what? I’m gonna turn into a zen master overnight, okay? But I will keep trying.

Lily: Ah.

[ Chuckles ]

Adam: We’re ready to put the plan in motion, so go ahead and set the bait. Report back to me how it goes. Why give your family just any eggs

Sharon: I agree with noah. You do seem stressed out. Now, I know I’ve said I’m not the best person to give advice when it comes to phyllis, but, you know, I can listen. We both can.

Nick: [ Sighs ] I guess I was looking for somebody to talk to about this. But I also feel like I’m all talked out, you know?

Noah: Yeah, well, whatever it is, it’s obviously still bothering you. It might feel better to get it off your chest.

Sharon: Yeah, talking it out can seem tiring, but it could also lift that weight off your shoulders and make this more manageable. You don’t have to worry about having your feelings all sorted out. We know you better than most, and we know how messy these things can be.

Noah: Yeah, messy’s actually my strong suit, so…

Nick: Okay, uh… got into another fight with Phyllis. Didn’t end well. Pretty sure it’s over.

Noah: I’m sorry, dad. I know you wanted to work things out.

Sharon: I’m sorry you guys have dug into a rut that you can’t get out of.

Nick: Well, I know you were expecting this when I told you i was having questions about my relationship.

Sharon: I would never say “i told you so” or imply that you deserve some kind of heartache. I know you’re hurting. The question is, do you think that this relationship can be repaired?

Jack: Take a deep breath. Slow down.

Phyllis: Okay.

Jack: You said you think that you and Nick are broken up. First of all, that’s normally one of the things that we’re pretty clear on one way or the other.

Phyllis: Right, right. Well, let’s add a lack of clarity to the list of our issues. Let’s do that. And you had a front-row seat to our final act, didn’t you?

Jack: Well, I will agree that lunch with Nick and Nikki was a bit strained, but I thought the two of you being there together was a good sign, that maybe the two of you were back on track.

Phyllis: Yeah, I thought so, too. But you saw how he reacted when I said the slightest little thing about the great victor Newman.

Jack: You criticized his father in front of his mother. I can understand where Nick might feel a little awkward there.

Phyllis: Okay, no, no, that’s not it. That’s not it. But — listen, he reacts the exact same way anytime he says something about his family and then i repeat it.

Jack: Okay, well, the dynamic in the Newman family has always been a bit different than that in the Abbott clan.

Phyllis: Yes, and I don’t want to be a part of it anymore. There was no work emergency, Jack. That was a lie. I don’t want to be a part of Nick’s judgment and his jealousy anymore.

Jack: What do you mean jealousy?

Phyllis: You know, and then after lunch, he found me back at the grand phoenix, and we had a conversation.

[ Exhales sharply ] All of this resentment that he feels toward me came out in all of its glory. And he told me in no uncertain terms that we cannot be together anymore.

Ashland: I’m not gonna presume that you would come with me on this trip. It’s only preliminary. An evaluation of my condition to see if I’m even a candidate for this treatment. I’m not gonna ask you to leave for that.

Victoria: Well, I’m offering.

Ashland: Look, Newman/Locke has just way too much going on, and you’ve shouldering most of the workload. I’ll only be gone a few days, sweetheart.

Victoria: No, I am not gonna let you go through this evaluation on your own, let alone a trip to Peru. We’re in this together 100%. Besides, it’s gonna be hard for you to process all of the medical information in the moment.

Ashland: I’ll be fine.

Victoria: You need someone there to take it all in with you, to ask questions. Most importantly, to hold your hand.

Ashland: I agree, but —

Victoria: Let me just rephrase that. I need to hold your hand.

Ashland: I’m not gonna be able to change your mind about this, am I?

Victoria: What do you think? So when do we leave?

Nikki: Leave? Leave for where?

[ Inhales sharply ] Your honeymoon? And tonight’s winning numbers are 18,

Ashland: Well, I wish we were going on our honeymoon, but, unfortunately, there’s been a change of plans and we’re just gonna have to put that on hold a little while longer.

Nikki: Oh, well, if this has something to do with work, I’d be happy to step up and handle things.

Victoria: Well, whatever small disappointment to put off the honeymoon, it pales in comparison. This is infinitely more important. Do you mind if I share the news with her?

Ashland: Of course, we’re all family now.

Nikki: Well, does this trip have something to do with Ashland’s health?

Victoria: Yes, but it’s a good thing. He has an opportunity to try an experimental treatment, so we’re jumping at the opportunity and we’re gonna fly to Peru and see if we can have him evaluated and get him signed up for the trial.

Nikki: Well, I pray that the evaluation goes well and that you can move forward to the new treatment.

Victoria: Thank you, Mom.

Ashland: I really appreciate the support, and, uh, I’m extremely touched by how you and victor have accepted me into your lives.

Nikki: Well, you’re our daughter’s husband now, so you are a very important part of this family.

Ashland: You know, you have trusted me with your daughter’s heart, and I want nothing more than to honor that. It’s Victoria’s love that spurs me on to beat back this damn illness for as long as I can.

Nick: I thought things with Phyllis could be repaired, but after this latest argument, Phyllis told me that she doesn’t agree.

Noah: She said that?

Nick: Yeah. In no uncertain terms. She’s very angry.

Noah: It’s hard to have a productive conversation with someone when they’re completely wrapped up in their own grievances.

Nick: It’s like talking to a brick wall. Nothing I say gets through. And when I do something, she doesn’t believe me anyway.

Sharon: Can you give us some specifics?

Nick: I don’t know what to say. Honestly, I have no idea how we got here. Things were — you know, they were great. We went into this relationship this time around with our eyes wide open. We had very reasonable expectations. We didn’t try and change one another. We accepted each other for who we are. You know, it was working. This was working.

Sharon: So, then where did things start to go wrong?

Nick: I thought it was in Italy, but Phyllis said it was way earlier than that, you know? I thought it was just, like, a bump in the road. I’ve been drawn into some family drama, as you know, with Victoria and Dad and Adam, and I guess I should’ve been focusing more on what was going on with us. But, you know, everything blew up. I tried my best to stay calm, but Phyllis was raw and hurting, and she was throwing around a bunch of accusations at me. It just went from zero to 60 so fast.

Phyllis: I feel if we’re not having sex or playing video games, it’s like you’re pushing me away or you’re distant. It’s like you want nothing to do with me.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Anyway, last thing I want to do is draw you into this mess, you know? I don’t want to dump all this on you. And I certainly don’t want you to feel sorry for me.

Jack: So tell me exactly what happened in this fight.

Phyllis: [ Exhales sharply ] It was awful. You don’t want to hear this. This is just familiar territory.

Jack: I’m fine. Talk to me.

Phyllis: You must be so tired of listening to me. But I have done everything I can to support him. Everything I can. I mean, we went to Kyle and summer’s wedding, and he was so distracted with Victoria and Ashland. I mean, it’s his daughter’s wedding. But I supported him, and then i doubled down and I accompanied him to Victoria and Ashland’s wedding in Tuscany. And then I even supported him when he decided not to go to the ceremony. I went alone. Me and his family. But he still thinks I don’t care and he still thinks that I don’t understand where he’s coming from.

Jack: That’s got to be frustrating.

Phyllis: Yes, it is, and i take all my consternation — I take it all, Jack, and I keep it to myself. And I stuff it in a box. And I still have his back, you know? And we had a really nice conversation. I thought we were getting somewhere this morning, and then we decided to go to lunch, and then you saw that. I say one little thing about his father and that is it, he shuts me down in front of both of you. And then I realized…we don’t deal with our issues. And if we do, it’s just on a superficial level. Do you know what I mean? I mean, it’s like there’s this superficiality to our relationship. It’s all fun and nice and fluffy, but it’s rotten inside.

Jack: Did you share that realization with Nick?

Phyllis: Oh. Of course I did. I told him exactly what I wanted. I told him I want a commitment and a confidant. And [Exhales sharply] Come on. I wouldn’t be working this hard at this if I didn’t care and if I didn’t love him.

Jack: So how did Nick react to this?

Nick: Loving and doting? That’s what you think you were being?

Phyllis: He just belittled me. With less moderate-to-severe eczema why hide your skin

Jack: Sometimes we say really unpleasant things in the middle of a heated argument.

Phyllis: Yep, and it may be unpleasant. It’s often…revealing. Those things we don’t want to say. Those things we gloss over. Those things that we hide from one another. And sometimes from ourselves.

Jack: You say you’re worried that there’s superficiality there. Maybe the answer is to dig deeper, to get it all out.

Phyllis: Well, normally, i would agree with you.

[ Chuckles ] Oh, god. This was not productive.

Jack: Okay, so give me an example. Look, I want to understand this. Maybe I can give you some perspective on where Nick is coming from.

Phyllis: See, that’s the thing, is I know where he’s coming from. I understand him. The problem is he doesn’t understand where I’m coming from, and he doesn’t want to. He doesn’t want to understand. Do you get it? I keep on trying to tell him that what we have is worth going there for, but he doesn’t want to. And I think that I just have to —

[ Breathes shakily ] I have to accept that I’m somebody, um…that he just doesn’t want to commit to.

Nick: Don’t do me any favors. You pretending to be superior or taking the high road is absurd.

Phyllis: What came out of that…was his obvious lack… of respect for me. And that hurts. Some things can’t be unsaid.

Sharon: Caring about you is not the same thing as feeling sorry for you. And you don’t have to go into details if you don’t want to, but you already said that Phyllis was angry and you seem hurt, so we’re just asking you what she said that hurt you.

Nick: After I talked to you two earlier, I went to her to apologize, and Phyllis actually admitted that she wasn’t happy. She did say that we’re in this together and we’re committed to doing the hard work to weed through our issues.

Sharon: Well, that’s good, but that process is bound to have some uncomfortable conversations and temporarily hurt feelings.

Nick: That’s not what this is.

Sharon: How can you be sure?

Nick: Because it turns out I’m the only one that’s willing to put in the effort. Then we got caught up in this weird, awkward lunch with Jack and my mom, and tensions amped up again and then Phyllis took off.

Noah: Running away never solves anything.

Nick: So I went and tracked her down to try and smooth things over. She didn’t want to talk, she just kept shutting me down, telling me that our relationship was hopeless.

Sharon: And so you just accepted that she had given up and that things were over?

Nick: No, I want her to talk about it because I want to understand. I want to get past our issues, but she just kept saying that — you know, that I always put my family before her. And I told her that it’s impossible for me to talk about my family with her because she has such strong opinions against them.

Noah: And what’d she say to that?

Nick: She told the truth.

Phyllis: You’re right! I do hate your family!

Nick: [ Sighs ] And I don’t know how to come back from that.

Adam: Hey. Hope you don’t mind me stopping by. I need to speak with Ashland.

Victoria: Well, he is on a call. I’m not sure how long he’ll be.

Adam: Okay. I can wait.

Victoria: In my office? Uh, no. I don’t think so.

Adam: Fine. I will text him. Unless you don’t mind passing along a message. It’s nothing I want to keep secret from you, since you’re on board with us going after Chanccomm.

Victoria: I assured Ashland that I don’t care if Newman media goes after them, that’s fine with me, but I don’t want to be involved. I don’t even want to know any of the details.

Adam: That’s fine by me. Just wanted to let him know that we have set things in motion.

Victoria: I will tell him.

Adam: Thanks.

Victoria: And just so you know, whatever happens next, he’s not gonna be around for that. We’re leaving for South America tomorrow afternoon. Ashland is pursuing a new cancer treatment.

Adam: Mm-hmm. It’s probably not the honeymoon you had in mind.

Victoria: Well, if it’s a success, it will be the best honeymoon ever.

Adam: Well, good luck. I hope for the best possible outcome.

Victoria: Thank you. I — I have faith that it’s gonna work. I mean, we’ve — we’ve just started our lives together, so i refuse to give up on it.

Adam: Well, I know when you’re determined, you won’t give up until you get what you want, so I look forward to seeing you and Ashland at your 10th wedding anniversary.

Victoria: What makes you think you’ll be invited to the party?

Adam: Well, you invited me to the wedding, so it’s required.

Victoria: Yeah, no, that’s not a rule.

Adam: Eh. Maybe not. But this, it feels like we’re bantering. Like siblings do. I’d like to think that we could build on this almost warm vibe.

Victoria: I’m pretty sure this is as good as it’s gonna get.

Adam: Okay, then.

Lily: How cute were the kids’ Halloween costumes this year?

Billy: Mm. So cute. Johnny was adorable. And Katie was a little scary. And you, of course, sexy.

Lily: Of course. It was for the after-hours party only.

Billy: Oh, yeah, wine and candy?

Lily: Yeah, that you stole from your children’s stash.

Billy: They have plenty to spare. And what can I say? I’ve got a soft spot for candy corn.

Lily: Oh, my god, I can’t believe I’m with someone who loves candy corn.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone rings ]

Billy: It’s Victoria.

Lily: Answer it.

Billy: Hello.

Victoria: Hey. Listen, I need to go out of town for a few days, and I was hoping that you could Johnny and Katie.

Billy: Yeah, sure, that’s fine. We love it when the kids come over to stay with us. Is everything okay? Is this business? Because I thought you were leaving for your honeymoon next week.

Victoria: I can’t get into it right now, but thanks for taking care of the kids. I appreciate it.

Billy: Of course.

Victoria: Bye.

Lily: What was that?

Billy: Victoria’s heading out of town for a few days unexpectedly, so the kids are gonna come and stay with us.

Lily: Yeah, that’s fine. I mean, it doesn’t really change our plans at all. Except I’ll warn them to hide their Halloween candy from you.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] Maybe we should head home and have a little adult time before they come over.

Lily: Mm, excellent idea.

Billy: Yeah, okay. On second thought, maybe we should look at the dessert menu.

I can’t believe it. Guy’s gone missing again. He gave the slip to Newman security, so we have new marching orders — find him asap. Okay. So much for my dinner break.

Billy: That’s Victor’s P.I. He must be talking about Gaines. Sounds like that S.O.B. Has slipped through Victor’s fingers again.

Lily: Well, at least that proves that Adam and victor didn’t do something more sinister to him.

Billy: I’m not gonna give them credit for that. But it does open the door for us potentially.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Why do I feel like this is the end to our work-free evening?

Billy: We shouldn’t talk here. Let’s go home.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Adam: Tell me some good news.

I think it worked. What next?

Adam: We let Billy do what he does best — self-destruct.

Jack: I honestly thought that you and Nick would find some way to get through this. Maybe that was wishful thinking. Maybe there is no solution.

Phyllis: Other than walking away, I don’t know. That’s the only conclusion i have. It scares me to think of that, actually. It breaks my heart. Oh, god, I don’t want to fall apart here.

Jack: You know what? We could somewhere more private where everyone isn’t watching us. Sometimes losing it for a moment is exactly what we need.

Phyllis: No, not this time. I don’t want to do that. I just think I need to be alone.

Jack: Okay. I get that.

Phyllis: Shouldn’t be so shocked. I mean, it’s not like I haven’t been here before with Nick. But…I mean, this was inevitable, I guess, right?

Jack: No, don’t say that. Look, you said you and Nick had been here before and somehow gotten through it. Maybe this is the last time you’ll face something like this.

Phyllis: Yeah, ironically, i think it is the last time. Just not in the way I was hoping.

Nick: Thank you for listening and being supportive. Means a lot. Give faith a hug for me.

Sharon: Alright. Give Christian our love, too.

Noah: I haven’t seen dad this out of sorts in a long time.

Sharon: I know. I feel so bad for him.

Noah: Yeah, but I know you were biting your tongue about seeing this coming.

Sharon: Well, I don’t want to make him feel worse, kick him when he’s down.

Noah: But still, you told me that you predicted this.

Sharon: Yes, privately, I’ve never understood how your kid could fool himself again into thinking that this relationship would have any other outcome.

Noah: I like Phyllis. I do, but even I can see that she and dad are like night and day. I know opposites can attract, but I never understood that pull they have.

Sharon: I think it has to do with the excitement of doing something illicit and forbidden, but then, under normal circumstances, when there is no more drama, it gets boring and it falls apart.

Noah: Or maybe…it’s not any of that. Maybe, deep down…dad never got over you. Hi Susan! Honey?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone rings ] Hey.

Jack: Hey. I just wanted to make sure you were back okay.

Phyllis: Liar. You wanted to make sure that i wasn’t in the fetal position, laying in a puddle of my tears.

Jack: It’s okay if you are, you know. More than anything, I want you to know if you need to reach out, I’m around.

Phyllis: You’re the best.

Jack: Be kind to yourself, okay? I’ll see you.

Phyllis: Oh, please, it’s not a flirtation.

Nick: Then what is it then? Because as far as I can tell, the second we have a conflict, you run straight to Jack.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Who knows what we’re gonna find behind the door that Gaines has opened? So many possibilities. But if we find him before victor’s people do, then we have the ammo to stop him from coming after Chanccomm.

Lily: There’s no assurance that finding Gaines will give anything but a liability.

Billy: Why would you think that? He’s got the proof that Ashland stole Camilla’s inheritance.

Lily: Yeah, and what do you want to do with the proof? We’ve talked about this. It could ruin Victoria and Ashland’s lives.

Billy: No, we don’t need to worry about that because we don’t need to publish the information. We will use it to blackmail Victor and Adam to stop them from coming after us.

Lily: [ Sighs ] No, we won’t.

Billy: Why not, Lily?

Lily: Because I am done with this, okay? I am not gonna humor you anymore. We’re done with Gaines.

Nikki: I think that meeting went well, don’t you?

Victoria: Yes, I like them. I think they’ll be good strategic partners for us.

Nikki: Thanks for the ride home. Now, I hope that you will go home and get some rest.

Victoria: Well, actually, I have to go back to the office and finish some work before we leave for Peru.

Nikki: Oh, Honey. I know you are focused on getting Ashland through this and staying positive, but you have to look after yourself, too. I mean, you’re gonna need all of your strength and then some.

Victoria: Mother, I am aware. Thank you for always looking out for me.

Nikki: Well, if you ever want to talk about it, I am here for you.

Victoria: Okay. I’m fine, though, really. I have high hopes for this new treatment.

Nikki: I am praying that it will turn things around for Ashland. I don’t want to see your heart broken.

Victoria: Well, I’m not gonna dwell on that. I’m — I’m very optimistic that it might work.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Nikki: Oh. Oh, it’s your father. Hi, darling. What? Oh, my god. Oh, how horrible. What can I do? Just tell me. Yes, yes, I understand. Okay, bye.

Victoria: What is it?

Nikki: Abby just got word that Chance might have been killed while doing undercover work.

Victoria: Oh, my goodness, this is so tragic. Poor Abby.

Nikki: Victor thinks she’s in shock.

Victoria: Well, yes, how could she not be? To get this kind of news and she’s caring for a newborn? We should go over there and we should help her.

Nikki: Well, he’s there with her and Ashley is there. He says she’s overwhelmed and doesn’t want any more visitors. Victor’s gonna wait there with her until they hear more news. But this has not been officially confirmed, so for now, we’re keeping it private.

Victoria: Of course. Gosh, Mom, my heart goes out to her. Abby must be so devastated.

Ashland: [ Exhales sharply ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Lily: Look, just forget Gaines, forget Ashland, okay? We will beat the Newmans ourselves by being better, smarter, savvier, okay? We don’t need anyone or anything else.

Billy: Okay, but, Lily —

Lily: No, Billy, this is what I’m sayin–

[ Knock on door ]

Billy: Must be the kids.

Lily: Yeah.

Billy: What the hell?

Gaines: Please, I have nowhere else to go. I’m not safe. Can you hide me?

Nick: What do you mean this isn’t gonna work? You know what? You can’t say something like that and just walk off without explaining yourself.

Phyllis: That’s all I do is explain myself to you.

[ Scoffs ] I’m being the loving and the doting girlfriend, but you just treat me with disdain.

Nick: Loving and doting? That’s what you think you’re being by making jokes at my father’s expense in front of my mother, with Jack having a front-row seat and you rubbing your obvious flirtation in my face.

Phyllis: Oh, wait, wait. That’s not flirtation.

Nick: Then what is it? Because as far as I can tell, every time we have the smallest of conflicts, you go running off to Jack.

Phyllis: You want to know why I go running to Jack? Because if we’re not having sex or playing video games, you treat me horribly. You push me away. It’s like you don’t even care about my opinions or my ideas.

Nick: Because your opinions are always saying that I should ignore my family or completely disengage from them, and that is not an option.

Phyllis: Oh, my god, that is such a lie! I am turning myself into a pretzel helping you deal with your family.

Nick: By asking me to cut myself off from them. You have no appreciation for how hard that would be for me.

Phyllis: My god, don’t even say that to me!

[ Exhales sharply ] You think that I don’t know what it’s like being connected to the Newman family? My advice comes from hard-learned truths. Being associated with single members of your family, particularly your father, so don’t you dare say that to me. Have sympathy for me! Okay? But you don’t, and it doesn’t matter. I turn the other cheek because i want to be with you.

Nick: Oh, don’t do me any favors. You pretending to be superior or taking the high road is absurd.

Phyllis: Okay, this is not gonna work. It’s over. It’s done. Seriously. We keep on telling each other that we don’t have to change, but you see, Nick, I’ve changed. I want more than sex and video games, and, oh, keeping it fluffy and light. I want more than that. I want a commitment, I want a confidant, I want someone who respects me. I want an ally.

Nick: And I want you to stop hating my family.

Phyllis: I hate your family. But not for the reasons that you think. I hate your family…’cause you always choose them over me.

Nick: I chose you over my sister when you had that battle for your hotel.

Phyllis: I know. I know you did, and that was great. It was great, and I thought there was gonna be a happy ending, but there’s not, because, look, you’re so miserable. You’re miserable because you’re out of sorts with your dad and your sister, and you’re so jealous of Adam. And you just want to be the golden boy. You just want to save the day. And you will always go back to roost, always. And you will sacrifice me and you will sacrifice our relationship because of it. I can’t do this anymore. I’m in so much pain. I can’t do this anymore.

[ Exhales sharply ]

Nick: I know.

Phyllis: [ Exhales sharply ]

[ Cellphone rings ]

Nick: I mean, it’s perfect timing. You say you want a confidant and an ally, well, the first sign of trouble, you always turn to him.

Devon: I can’t believe it. I just can’t believe that chance could be dead.

Mariah: “Could be”? Christine brought definitive proof — the watch, the wedding ring.

Tessa: I mean, it’s still a possibility that he survived the explosion. He might’ve just not been wearing them when it happened.

Mariah: Do you believe that?

Devon: Abby does. And I think that she’s really gonna need our help accepting the truth if she’s wrong.

Ashley: Bye, sharon. Thanks again.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Sharon is a good listener. Hopefully she was able to help abby.

Ashley: I hope so. I hope abby can get some sleep. I hate this, feeling so helpless.

Victor: I know, I know. Been a long time since I’ve seen you helpless.

Ashley: I could say the same thing about you. You, who always controls every single situation.

Victor: You know, all the money and power I have means nothing right now. I so want to be able to fix it for her.

Ashley: I do, too.

Victor: Yeah.

Ashley: She’s in agony. Poor thing. She’s just suffering, and there’s nothing I can do to alleviate it. It’s like a mother’s worst nightmare.

Mariah: Look at you. You are such a brave little boy. Too bad that you’ve had to be. You had to be bombarded by my stress hormones when we were in that room, and I did my best to keep my fear and anxiety to a minimum, ’cause I knew when i got upset, it would make you feel upset. Do you think he’s okay?

Tessa: I mean, he was cooing just a minute ago. I think he’s perfect in every way. But, mariah, I think that this situation might have brought up some trauma for you.

Victor: I think you should know that I called nate hastings, okay? I asked him to be here. I think we need to have a doctor around. Especially someone who knows abby and knows the family, and I’d rather err on the side of caution, you know?

Ashley: Think that’s a good idea?

Victor: Yeah.

Ashley: I hope it’s not necessary.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Ashley: I mean, look, I know it’s not rational to think that maybe abby would have a break with reality the way that I did, but I can’t help but be a little afraid.

Victor: I remember that.

Ashley: Well…

Victor: Hope she doesn’t have to go through that. But if she does, you and I will be here to help her through it.

Ashley: Yeah. Whether she wants us to or not.

Victor: And when she gets to the other side of it, hopefully soon, she’ll realize that you and I did not abandon her.

Ashley: I’m gonna go sit with her.

Victor: Okay. Some people have joint pain,

Mariah: I appreciate your concern, but I’m fine, okay? Can you please tell her that I’m fine?

Devon: I mean, I think she knows, but this has been hard on everybody, so you can’t blame her for looking out for you. She’s very good at it.

Mariah: Yes, she is. Tessa’s the best, and she knows me better than anyone. But this isn’t about me, you know? It’s about this little boy right here. I just want to make sure that he doesn’t absorb all of the negativity in that house.

Devon: Yeah, no, I know what you mean, but, you know, we have to trust that ashley and the rest of the family are gonna be able to take care of dominic while abby’s going through all this.

Tessa: He’s going to be loved and taken care of.

Devon: There’s really nothing to worry about at all. You know he’s in good hands.

Tessa: They’re not gonna let anything bad happen to him, and I’m not gonna let anything bad happen to you. So maybe we can go back to our hotel and just rest up a little bit?

Mariah: Yes. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Soon, though, ’cause while dominic’s here, I want to stay. I want to be here if he needs me.

[ Door closes ]

Victor: Nate. Thank you for coming on such short notice, okay?

Nate: Of course. How is abby?

Victor: Not well. Sharon was with her earlier and thought that she was in a state of denial. She’s in the kitchen right now with ashley making some tea. If you don’t mind my saying so, I think that she may need some, you know, low-dose anti-anxiety pills. But that’s your expertise.

Nate: Whatever abby needs, I’m here for.

Victor: Now, ashley and abby will return momentarily, so make yourself comfortable. If you need me, I’ll be in the den, alright? Thanks, man.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

[ Clears throat ]

[ Exhales sharply ]

Abby: Nate, what are you doing here?

Nate: Hey, I’m sorry to hear about what you’re going through.

Abby: Did they call you to give me a sedative or something?

Ashley: Maybe this isn’t a good time.

Abby: What my mom is trying to say is that sharon just left, and that was enough. I don’t need a doctor.

Nate: You’re right, I was called here as a doctor, but as your friend, I’ve been where you are. I just came by to talk, see how you were doing.

Abby: That’s all?

Nate: You don’t even have to respond if you don’t want to. Just hang out with me for a few minutes.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Mom, I’m gonna talk to nate. Could you just stay close by?

[ Sighs ]

Nate: [ Clears throat ] You think chance is still out there.

Abby: You said that like a statement, not a question. And this isn’t a matter of denial. Look, yes, they found his watch and ring at the explosion site, but they didn’t find him. So I can hear the news and I can hold his ring in my hand. But in my heart, I just — I don’t think…he’s alive. I know it. He’s not dead.

Devon: So ashley just said that nate is there with abby right now.

Tessa: Oh, that’s good. He’s a calming presence.

Devon: Yeah. And abby is asking me to bring the baby back home.

Mariah: Do you think that’s a good idea?

Devon: I do, actually, ’cause his mother and his grandparents are ready to take care of him.

Tessa: Yeah, he belongs at home.

Mariah: Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. You sure you don’t need help getting him back to the chancellor house?

Devon: No, no, I’m fine. I appreciate it. I left bread crumbs.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ]

Tessa: Can I take you back to our suite now?

Devon: I promise you, you have nothing to worry about. That little boy knows what strength and safety feels like because you protected him for all that time. Don’t forget that. Let some other people look after him now.

Mariah: Okay. Let’s go. Alright, buddy. I’ll see you soon, okay?

Nate: I know how you feel. You know I lost my fiancéE. I remember how hard it was having to admit she was gone.

Abby: Yeah, you told me how awful that was for you. But this is not the same situation. You — you saw carolyn. You knew the truth. I don’t have that. Yes, other people think chance is gone, but…I can’T.

Nate: Yeah, I get it. Having to accept the news or the evidence that they’ve given you, your husband can’t come back, right? I think it’s common when we lose someone abruptly like this. We don’t want to let go of hope.

Abby: No, I can’t let go. And, yes, I have had my moments of doubt, like when christine gave me this. But I was in shock. And now I see things clearly. I mean, really, nothing has really changed. I mean, chance was gone before, and he’s — he’s still gone now, but…you know, he promised that he was gonna come home. And he iS. I know he is. So what I really need now is to just have faith in my husband and have faith in us.

Nate: Yeah. I understand.

Abby: Oh, stop. Stop trying to placate me.

Nate: [ Sighs ] Don’t settle. Start your day with secret.

Nate: Can you hear yourself?

Abby: Well, it’s normal to get defensive when people refuse to believe what you’re saying.

Nate: It’s also normal to overreact when you’re running on fumes. Have you eaten?

Abby: I had a sandwich earlier.

Nate: Really? Or is that you’re telling everyone? Look, if what you’re saying is true and chance is still out there, then you owe it to him and the baby to stay healthy. When did you last sleep?

Abby: That doesn’t matter.

Nate: It does. You need to eat and you need some rest. I’m having some anti-anxiety medication delivered. It’s a low dose, but it’ll calm you down and help you sleep.

Abby: Look, I appreciate it, but I need to stay alert and awake, for dominic.

Ashley: Honey. I promise that I’m gonna be right here for the baby as soon as devon brings him back home, okay? Could you please go upstairs and sleep?

Abby: Fine, fine, but I’m gonna rest here on the couch in the living room. That way, I’m close by in case we hear anything.

Ashley: Yes. Please just close your eyes and rest.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ]

Sharon: Oh, hi, devon.

Devon: Hey, sharon. How’d everything go with abby?

Sharon: Um…well, you know the stages of grief, right?

Devon: I do.

Sharon: And the first one is denial. That’s right where she’s stuck, and I’m afraid that it’s gonna take her a while to get out of it.

Devon: You think she’s that bad?

Sharon: I really wish that we could fix someone with just a touch or a word, I mean, especially in times like these. It’s so frustrating. She won’t even talk about her feelings. She won’t acknowledge them. There’s just nothing I can do.

Devon: I know. I do know. But I think that I may have something that will bring you some joy.

Mariah: No, no, there’s no need to send this to jack. Why don’t I take a look at the numbers and see if I can 5% out of the budget? And if I can’t, then I can bring him in. Okay? Yeah, give me like 30 minutes. Cool. Bye.

[ Sighs ]

Tessa: Everything okay at work?

Mariah: Yeah, it’s fine. I’m just trying to distract myself with budgets and deadlines.

Tessa: But your mind is really elsewhere?

Mariah: Yeah. On the baby. I just — I hate leaving him. What?

Tessa: Nothing.

Mariah: You’re staring at me.

Tessa: I mean, I find you very attractive.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Thank you. I appreciate that. But…it’s not why you’re looking at me. I promise you I am fighting all of my urges when it comes to the baby, but you still think I’m slipping, am I right?

Tessa: I’m a little worried. You got pretty worked up at crimson lights. It seems as if you feel you are the only one who can properly take care of dominic.

Mariah: I can’t help wanting to be there for him. I thought you understood that i have a bond with dominic.

Tessa: I do. But I’m concerned that that urge, that instinct to just wrap him up and shield him from danger, it’s — it’s gonna cause you pain. And that really breaks my heart.

Nate: So you were hungry.

Abby: I was. And, um…sure, I will take the medication. But honestly, I’m feeling tired, so I think that I’ll be able to get some rest on my own.

Nate: That’d be good. I just want to tell you i understand how much chance meant to you. When you and I were together, you made it clear you didn’t want anything serious because you weren’t ready, after your prior relationship had fallen apart. And then chance came into your life. I watched as you fell hard and fast. That love is still there, and it will always be a part of you.

Abby: Thank you, but, uh, you’re speaking like it’s already over. Like we know chance is gone. But we don’t know that. No one knows that for certain.

Nate: You’re right. My mistake. Get some rest, abby.

Abby: Chance, you can’t be gone. With downy infusions, let the scent set the mood.

Victor: Thank you for coming, nate.

Nate: I hope I was of some help.

Victor: You bet.

Nate: The medication i ordered should be delivered soon. Make sure abby follows the instructions.

Ashley: Absolutely.

Victor: Appreciate it.

Ashley: Thanks again.

Victor: Thank you.

Ashley: [ Sighs ]

Victor: [ Sighs ] You need some rest, okay?

Ashley: Mm, I’m too wound up. I think I’m gonna make some food. If we eat it, great. If we don’t, that’s okay, too. I just got to keep myself busy.

Victor: Okay.

Ashley: You’ll watch over her?

Victor: You bet.

Ashley: Thanks.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Abby: Chance, where are you? I know you wouldn’t leave me when we just started a family. So that means that you’re out there. So I’ll find you.

Sharon: Who’s a big boy? Who’s a big, happy, smiley boy?

[ Both laugh ] You were right, devon. Just spending a few moments with him, and I’m in a better mood.

Devon: I know. He really is magic.

Sharon: And hopefully he can bring some of that joy to his mother. She really needs it.

Devon: I know she does. I actually have dominic right now because abby didn’t want him around her in the state that she’s in. I was just about to bring him home before you came back.

Sharon: He’s lucky he has you in his life. You can look after him.

Devon: I’d argue and say that I’m the lucky one, sharon. Just getting to spend time with him and getting to learn about him and all of his, you know, different moods and different expressions. It’s like making up for the time that I never got to spend with my child with hilary. I missed out on a lot.

Sharon: Kind of like how dominic will miss out on spending time with chance. You two are a perfect match.

Devon: Yeah, I guess so. I just wish it didn’t have to be this way. Chance never getting to meet his son and abby never getting to say goodbye to her husband, it’s just — it’s unfair to everyone.

Tessa: Was that too much honesty?

Mariah: No. I needed to know if I was reverting back with the baby, and I guess I was.

Tessa: I know I probably shouldn’t be worried, but I am.

Mariah: I know. And I love you for that. But I really don’t think you need to be.

Tessa: But am I right?

Mariah: About what?

Tessa: Do you think that you’re the only one who can properly take care of dominic?

Mariah: [ Sighs ] I — I can’t say that for sure. I mean, of course there are other people who are qualified to take care of him, but…

Tessa: You think your connection to him counts for more.

Mariah: No, I didn’t say that.

Tessa: You didn’t have to. I know you.

Mariah: I’m the one who carried him for all those months, who felt him growing and changing inside of me. I was the one who was with him all the time when we were locked in that room.

Tessa: Those were unique experiences that will give you two a lifelong bond. But other people have special connections to dominic.

Mariah: I understand, tessa. Abby is his mother, but she needs a break right now. And of course dominic wouldn’t be here without devon’s contribution, but I — it’s not the same as mine, and ashley and nina love their grandson.

Tessa: But not the way you do.

Mariah: I don’t know if they could.

Tessa: You realize that’s not your call to make?

Mariah: Yes, of course. Abby gets to decide. Even if she’s not in the best frame of mind to make decisions right now.

Tessa: Again, that’s not for you to judge. Even if abby isn’t 100% right now, dominic is not going to be neglected.

Mariah: Tessa, I understand that there are plenty of other people who are qualified to take care of him. But I have thoughts and I have feelings, and…in my heart, I just… I just don’t think this is the way that it should be.

Abby: This is where I first saw you when you came back to town. Phillip chancellor iv. Fancy name for a down-to-earth guy. It was here. You came back to town and fell into my life. The hostage crisis, remember? Yeah, you sent me a text and you asked me to play along. You wanted me to help you distract the bad guy. It was terrifying and thrilling. I looked over at the security camera and I nodded to let you know that we were in sync. Chance, I need you here. I need you here watching me. Show me that we’re in this together.

Sharon: Abby has to find a way to move on from chance. I’m afraid that’s gonna be hard with the baby around the house. She’ll have to focus on the beginning of the baby’s life while trying to move on from the end of chance’S.

Devon: Yeah, that doesn’t sound easy.

Sharon: Well, ideally, the baby would help her get past the grief, you know, would give her a purpose. But sometimes when you suffer a loss like this, it can be hard just to get out of bed.

Devon: Oh, believe me, I know exactly what you’re talking about. I fell apart when I lost hilary.

Sharon: Well, when you have to take care of another human being, that can give you a reason to take your life back. You know, you have no choice. You have to raise a baby.

Devon: Yeah. I mean, you and I know that, sharon. I just hope that abby doesn’t go through a self-destructive phase. ‘Cause like you said, she has to be there for dominic.

Sharon: She’s only at the beginning of what lies ahead for her and the baby.

Abby: This is where you busted me for faking a theft at the grand phoenix. You caught me red-handed. But we had chemistry. And it was fun and flirtatious and sexy. And we agreed that we would make great partners, remember? So I hired you as head of security at the hotel to keep you from working dangerous cases. You were supposed to leave the danger behind. You were supposed to stay in genoa city with me. Our first kiss. [ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] We were so good together. You confessed that you spent the whole dinner wanting to reach across the table and kiss me. I wanted that, too.

[ Sniffles ] So please, chance, come kiss me now.

[ Wind blowing ] Chance? Chance?! We came here after that date where we went ice skating. It was freezing outside. It was the first time that we made love. Remember that?

[ Sighs ] Of course you do. I skipped work and we laid in bed all day and we traded stories about our scars. Yours were from cases. Danger that you were supposed to leave behind. Chance, how could you go back to that? How could you stay away for so long? Damn it, chance! You made promises. You made promises right here. On our wedding day. You told me that I changed you. And we made vows and we talked about our future. A family. How could you leave? How could you just leave me and have me go through with the surrogacy? No. No, you are too good and you are too honest for it to end this way. So I know that you are gonna keep your word. Chance, if there’s a reason why you can’t come back, if there’s something preventing you from coming home, I will help you. I will find you.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Tessa: So you think that dominic would rather have you take care of him.

Mariah: No, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m only trying to say that i have feelings. I know you and devon are worried about my attachment to the baby, but I’m not even thinking about what I want or need. This is about him. He just lost a father that he’s never going to know. He’s living in a house of grief and trauma.

Tessa: He is safe. He is cared for.He is loved.

Mariah: I know, but this is not the life that I promised him when we were locked in that room together. This wasn’t the deal.

Tessa: I get that. But no one expected any of this. Abby certainly didn’t want things to turn out this way, but life is unpredictable. You can’t control the future.

Mariah: No, but there are some things that I can control. I can keep him safe.

Tessa: There’s nothing you can do about his father dying unexpectedly.

Mariah: That is exactly why i feel like I have failed, tessa. I didn’t protect him.

Find your rhythm.

Devon: Thank you, sharon.

Nate: Hey, guys. I just saw abby.

Sharon: Nate, I hope things went better for you with her than they did for me.

Devon: How’s she doing?

Nate: I’m worried. She’s been under long-term stress with her husband gone, brand-new baby, mariah’s abduction. Now the biggest crisis of all. It’s a lot to handle mentally, and eventually it starts to break you down physically. Right now she needs rest and nourishment. Luckily, I was able to convince her into eating something and taking a nap.

Devon: Well, that’s a good sign.

Nate: It is, but it’s just a start.

Sharon: Well, it won’t take the grief away, but maybe she’ll be able to face it.

Devon: Hey, what do you — what do you think about me bringing dominic back to the house and her being around the baby?

Nate: Think it’d be a good idea.

Devon: ‘Cause I’m worried. I’m worried about him absorbing all that negative energy in the house.

Nate: Uh, it’s a concern, but it’s a question of balance. It’ll be good for abby to see him. Plus, she has plenty of family there if she gets emotional. So shouldn’t be an issue. Dominic will be in good hands.

Devon: Alright, that’s good to hear. I’ll take him back, but I’ll probably — I’ll stop and take him for a walk in the park first.

Mariah: I agreed to be abby and chance’s surrogate. I was happy to do it. I was carrying that baby because I thought that I was helping to build a family. Mom, dad, baby — the three of them together. And he was gonna have a golden childhood, doting parents. And now he’s surrounded by grief and loss, and I didn’t keep my promise to always protect him.

Tessa: Yes, you have. You’ve gone above and beyond for him. You even turned down a trip to italy just to be around to make sure he’s okay.

Mariah: I am his godmother. I’m a friend of the family, and I can’t even be there for him the way that I should be because I’m not his…

Tessa: Are you saying that you wish he was your son and not abby’s?

Mariah: I just can’t help thinking that that’s the way that it — it should’ve been. That I should be his mom.

Tessa: I don’t know what to say.

Mariah: I’m not acting on that feeling, and I know it’s fear talking. I know it’s my own issues. But you asked what’s going on in my head and my heart, and i wanted to be completely honest with you, and…

[ Sighs ] It’s not right and it’s not rational. I know that. But it’s a fleeting thought that comes into my brain once in a while, and — and…it’s there.

Tessa: Well…let’s examine that and then figure out how to proceed.

Mariah: Uh, I thought you were gonna run out of here and head screaming for the hills.

Tessa: Never.

Mariah: My god, you have the patience of a saint.

Tessa: True, but…only with you. Because I love you.

Mariah: I love you, too.

Tessa: So…we are gonna work through this together.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Mariah: Um… oh, my gosh, it’s work. They need these numbers. I…I should probably do this.

Tessa: I mean, you really have to do that right now?

Mariah: It’s only gonna take a few minutes.

Abby: Everything always leads me back here, doesn’t it? Why doesn’t it do the same for you? How can you stay away? This is where I first told you that I loved you. And where you proposed. This place — this place has special meaning to us. Chancellor park. You wouldn’t just leave this behind. I know that you’re here.

[ Wind blowing ] God. How could you leave us to go on a dangerous mission when you knew it could end like this, that you might never come home? You wouldn’t break my heart like that, would you? Didn’t you love me enough to stay? To not take that risk? I believed in you, chance. I believed in us. I don’t know what to believe now.

[ Sighs ] Advanced non-small cell lung cancer can change everything.

[ Dominic crying ]

Abby: Dominic?

Devon: Hey, I’m sorry. I just put him down and he started crying. I think he missed you. It’s okay.

Abby: Hey. Hey. It’s okay. Mommy’s got you. It’s alright. It’s okay. Shh.

Adam: Hi, there. Was it something that I said?

Sally: I’m just trying to determine which one of your multiple personalities I’m dealing with. It’s a little guessing game I
play with myself.

Adam: Oh. I see.

Sally: ‘Cause sometimes I’m almost certain that I’ve run into friendly, funny, down-to-earth Adam, and then, no, he turns out to be [Clears throat] Officious Adam, busy CEO and all-around important guy with no time to waste on a
lowly peon like me.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I was — I was too abrupt with you yesterday. Although I did apologize, or try to.

Sally: Ah, yes, mea culpa Adam. An intriguing new addition to the cast of characters.

Adam: How many are there?

Sally: It’s an ever-changing landscape.

Adam: Wow. You know, that, it sounds kind of fascinating.

Sally: Fortunately, there is a fool-proof way to settle this. I will just invite to join me for lunch and see which Adam
fields the request.

Adam: I’d love to have lunch with you, but I’m booked today. I am actually here for a meeting.

Sally: Damn. I knew it. Now I owe myself 20 bucks.

********************

Adam: I really hope you’re not taking it personally that i have a business meeting.

Sally: No. I am not that girl. Like I told you, this is just a game to me. I’m going for best three out of five.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sally: No, wait. This might’ve been my third rejection — not that I’m keeping track.

Adam: Oh, no. Of course not, because we made a mutual agreement to keep things strictly professional between us.

Sally: Yes, and in retrospect, I’m so glad we did that. That way, I don’t get saddled with your chronic mood swings.

Adam: Okay, well, you are now making me wish my schedule was clear because you would be a much more entertaining lunch date than the person I’m meeting with.

Sally: Well, you could always bail. You know, things do come up.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Sadly, I’m afraid I can’t this time.

Sally: Mm. My, must be VIP.

Jack: Well, great minds think alike.

Nikki: Well, hell.

Jack: I’m glad I ran into you.

Nikki: Oh, yeah?

Jack: Well, I’ve been looking for a chance to tell you how impressed I was with the job you did organizing victoria and ashland’s wedding.

Nikki: Thank you so much, jack. I was just relieved that everything went smoothly.

Jack: You made it look effortless. No small feat. I have some idea of how much planning goes into that, and, wow, it was worth it. A delight, beginning to end.

Nikki: Well, I wanted to do it for them. They’ll always have those memories.

Jack: And those memories are important, especially given the special challenge those two are facing.

Nikki: Yes. I am grateful that victoria was able to convince ashland to fight his cancer. I know how difficult the treatment has been.

Jack: Well, we’re all praying those treatments are effective. I saw in italy the reunion between ashland and harrison, and it brought home just how close those two are. It’s a lot for my grandson to understand and accept if things don’t go as we hoped.

Nikki: Oh, god, I hate to think what that would do to victoria. I have to admit, I had reservations about this pairing in the beginning.

Jack: Given the groom’s well-deserved reputation as a ruthless businessman? Yeah, I got to see a little bit of that when he came after jabot.

Nikki: Well, he seems completely devoted to victoria, and that’s something that has been lacking in her life.

Jack: But you’re still worried about the heartache she could be facing.

Nikki: She’s a realist. She knows loss is a possibility.

Jack: Well, I respect that courage. Nothing is more important than the time we spend with those we love, even if that time is fleeting. She seems to have internalized that. I mean, she doesn’t seem to have any regrets.

Nikki: I haven’t heard any, but…

Jack: But as a devoted mother, you can’t help worrying.

Nikki: Well, it’s one thing to take those vows — “in sickness and in health” — but it’s quite another to navigate a possibly fatal disease. With all the whirl of the wedding prep and finalizing the merger, I don’t know that victoria has had time to sit down and really think about what could happen. But it’s gonna hit her eventually, and honestly, I’m dreading it.

Victor: Do you think that is chance’s ring?

Abby: [ Gasps ]

Victor: Sweetheart.

Abby: [ Sobbing ]

Victor: It’s okay, my love. It’s okay.

Adam: Hi, there. Was it something that I said?

Sally: I’m just trying to determine which one of your multiple personalities I’m dealing with. It’s a little guessing game i play with myself.

Adam: Oh. I see.

Sally: ‘Cause sometimes I’m almost certain that I’ve run into friendly, funny, down-to-earth adam, and then, no, he turns out to be

[Clears throat] Officious adam, busy ceo and all-around important guy with no time to waste on a lowly peon like me.

I will just invite to join me for lunch and see which adam fields the request.

Adam: I’d love to have lunch with you, but I’m booked today. I am actually here for a meeting.

Sally: Damn. I knew it. Now I owe myself 20 bucks.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: You’re hesitating. Why? It’s a simple question. Are we in this together or not?

Phyllis: No, I’m just thrown that you even have to ask me that. Of course I’m in this with you. Why do you think I’m working so hard? I mean, it doesn’t feel good now, but it will turn out good. I know that.

Nick: Agreed.

Phyllis: Can we table this? I…I’m still sort of hung over from last night. I’m not at my best.

Nick: Yeah, to be continued.

Phyllis: Thank you.

Nick: Well, I bet our brunch is cold. How about if I take you out to lunch?

Phyllis: Thank you. Um, I’M…

Adam: Something like that.

Sally: Anyone I know? What if we play 20 questions? What do I win if I guess it right?

Adam: It’s no one you’ve met.

Sally: Is he bigger than a bread box?

Adam: Well, he — or she — will be here soon, so enjoy your day.

Sally: Wow, smooth. You’re really good at this. All sounds so mysterious. Makes me wonder if it has something to do with that missing man, the one that billy was talking about. What was his name again, hanes? No, oh, gaines. Oops. Guess I wasn’t supposed to bring his name up anymore.

Nikki: Well, this has been such a great break, but I really need to get back to the office.

Jack: You know what? I came here to get a sandwich to take it back to the office and sit at my desk and eat lunch. To heck with that. What do you say you and I have a proper lunch together?

Nikki: I’d love to.

Jack: Fantastic. You pick the place. Though I hear there’s a great little moroccan place that just opened over on chestnut.

Nikki: Alright, now, wait a minute. You didn’t give me a chance to say “but.” I have a full inbox I have to get back to.

Jack: Oh, that will keep, i promise you.

Nikki: Jack.

Jack: Hey, we have just pulled off — you and I — one of the most satisfying feats in all of parenthood — launching our children off into fulfilling marriages with people they love and cherish.

Nikki: [ Laughs ] Well, I don’t know if we can take credit for that.

Jack: Yeah, maybe not, but we could use this opportunity to celebrate our great good fortune.

Nikki: Well, you put it that way, it’s hard to refuse. So I won’T. I’d love to have lunch with you, jack.

Jack: Fantastic.

Nikki: [ Chuckles ] But society is closer to newman tower, so do you mind going there?

Jack: Society it is. Shall we?

Nikki: Okay.

Jack: Here, let me get your coat.

Nikki: Thank you.

Jack: And your coat is right here.

Nikki: Thank you, sir.

Jack: You bet. Follow you.

Victor: I know how difficult this is for you, my sweetheart. We’ll take care of you, okay?

Abby: [ Sniffles ] This doesn’t — this can’t be real. There’s got to be some sort of explanation. Chance — he can’t be gone.

Ashley: Hey.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart.

Ashley: What is it? Is something going on?

Victor: A wedding ring was discovered and recovered in the rubble. And christine gave it to abby.

Ashley: Oh, god, no.

Victor: Belongs to chance.

Ashley: But that’s not necessarily proof, is it? I mean, he could’ve taken it off. Did they find anything else?

Christine: I was informed that being a married man was part of chance’s cover story, so he never took it off.

Ashley: Has search and rescue found anything?

Christine: Ashley, given the force of the explosion, positive identification of any of the remains is just gonna take some time.

Ashley: Abby. Honey? Honey, I’m right here.

[ Dominic crying ]

Devon: It’s okay.

Abby: [ Sniffles ] Oh, dominic. Shh.

[ Sniffles ] It’s gonna be okay.

[ Sniffles ] Shh.

We gave new zzzquil pure zzzs restorative herbal sleep

Adam: I noticed you ordered your food to go. Hope that wasn’t on my account.

Sally: I had already planned on working through lunch. I am still getting inquiries about victoria’s wedding dress.

Adam: Well, I’m not surprised about that.

Sally: But this kind of response from the fashion press and retail buyers, not to mention the dozens of brides that somehow got my work e-mail and are now clamoring for a copy. It’s just far beyond anything i ever envisioned.

Adam: Well, it sounds incredibly gratifying.

Sally: It is. It’s like a big, flashing neon sign telling me that I was right not to give up on my creative endeavors.

Adam: Well, speaking for newman fashions, it’s a good thing that you didn’t because I’m really looking forward to seeing what you and chloe come up with next.

Sally: What about chelsea? When she comes back in town, is she still planning on coming on board? ‘Cause it would be really great to have another fashion genius in the house to kick around ideas.

Adam: Um, I don’t know when or if chelsea’s gonna be up to working again.

Sally: Should I not have mentioned anything?

Adam: No, it’s fine. I hope she comes back to genoa city and she’s ready to pick up her life again. Sooner the better, as far as I’m concerned, so we can move on and — and, um… well, the person that I’m meeting with has arrived, so…

Sally: And looks like my food is here, so have fun with your not-at-all mysterious meeting.

Adam: Thanks. I’ll catch you later.

Sally: Thank you.

Ashley: You guys, I think abby could use a little space.

Devon: Okay, how about I take dominic out for a walk, then, for a little bit?

Mariah: Fresh air, I’m in.

Ashley: That’s a great idea. It’s nice outside.

Abby: No, please —

Ashley: Abby, honey. Everybody loves that little boy so much. They’re gonna take such good care of him, okay? Just like your father and I are gonna take good care of you.

Devon: Hey, we’re not gonna be gone long, I promise you.

Abby: Okay, um, use an extra blanket.

Devon: Sure, of course.

Mariah: Of course. Try to rest, okay?

Abby: Yeah.

Victor: Can you stick around? I have some questions, okay?

Christine: Sure, of course.

Devon: Hey, would you mind grabbing the diaper bag?

Mariah: Uh, yeah, absolutely.

Devon: Come on.

Phyllis: A flaming gorilla? Ooh, I want that. They put rum on top and then they set it on fire. I want a drink that’s on fire. Hey, if you clench your jaw a little harder, we’re gonna need an emergency dentist. What’s adam up to?

Nick: It’s who he’s with.

Phyllis: Who is that guy?

Nick: That’s one of my dad’s most trusted private investigators. He’s been on his security team for, like, ever. You see the way they’re talking and their body language? They’re clearly scheming about something and they’re not even trying to hide it.

Phyllis: Mm. Mm-hmm.

Nick: What’s that? “Mm-hmm,” what is that?

Phyllis: It’s just “uh-huh.” You know what it is. Come on. I’m not gonna say anything. I’m not gonna do that, because we’ve just gone through it this morning. I’m not gonna continue a pattern, you know, when you ask me what’s going on, and I say something supportive about you, and then you misinterpret and then we get into it. Hey, I’m gonna change the pattern. That’s refreshing, right?

Nick: I don’t want you to feel like you’re on eggshells around me. I want you to feel free to speak your mind.

Phyllis: Oh, do you?

Nick: Yes.

Phyllis: Really, you do? Okay, alright. Well, remember you said that.

Nick: I’m serious. If you got something to say, then say it. I’m not gonna hold it against you. I would like your unvarnished opinion.

Phyllis: You want my unvarnished opinion. Okay. Remember that you said that. Who cares what’s going on over there? Who cares who adam is talking to and what they’re up to? Can you just let it go and put your attention on us? Can you do that? My hygienist cleans with a round head.

Phyllis: Okay, I see you don’t love my suggestion. No problem.

Nick: Alright, do you remember how annoyed you were with me when I kept telling you to back off sally and tara, but you ended up being right about them?

Phyllis: Not even the same. I was trying to protect our daughter is what I was doing. What are you protecting? I mean, who cares what your dad and adam are plotting? Who cares?

Nick: [ Sighs ] Well, that’s not the way I look at it.

Phyllis: You know what? For once, you know what I would love? That you protect yourself. You protect yourself and just take yourself out of this situation. That’s all. I mean, that’s the advice I gave you in italy, and you didn’t take it then. I don’t really expect you to take it now, but you asked how i felt, and so I’m telling you. That’s all. Who cares about your dad and adam? Let them deal with the consequences of their shady dealings.

Nick: Do you know how many times I’ve tried that? More times than I can count. Ultimately, things always get blown up into this massive crisis, and then I get sucked right back in ’cause I got to protect the people I love, which is my sisters and my mother and my children. So don’t you think it’s best if I do everything I can to avert the mess that is brewing rather than wait for the other shoe to drop?

Phyllis: No. I think that you would be better if you only intermittently obsess with your family. That’s all. I’d be happy if, between disasters, you put more attention on our relationship. That’s all.

Nick: You know what? Let’s, uh… let’s get out of here. There’s lots of other places in town to eat lunch.

Phyllis: Seriously?

Nick: Yeah. I promised you a, you know, a nice time where we’re not worrying about everything that’s going on with us. That’s not gonna happen here because of adam. So let’s go.

Phyllis: Alright.

Jack: Hey!

Nikki: Hi.

Jack: Having lunch at the bar today?

Nikki: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: Yeah. I mean, we were, but we’re gonna change venues. Adam’s here, and I don’t really want to stick around, so…

Nikki: Oh, well, I hope you’ll reconsider. Jack and I are just grabbing a bite. Why don’t you join us, as long as jack doesn’t mind?

Jack: Not in the least.

Phyllis: Is that a singular “you” or a plural “you”?

Nikki: Uh…oh, “will you have lunch?” Plural, of course. Why?

Phyllis: Okay. I just — I didn’t know because our history, that’s all.

Nikki: Well, we got along very well in italy. And I must admit, I do have an ulterior motive.

Phyllis: Of course.

Nikki: Well, I’m hoping to convince my son to settle his differences with victoria, and i think I’ll have a better shot at it if I have your support.

Phyllis: Oh, yes, definitely. A double-team.

Nick: Look, I appreciate the offer, but phyllis and I need to talk about some stuff and —

Phyllis: You know what? I would love it if you made peace with your sister. Really, so thank you for the invitation. We’ll accept.

Christine: Well, I’m afraid that’s really all the information I have at this point.

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ] When do you anticipate getting an official notification?

Christine: Days, maybe longer. It just depends on the recovery effort. In the meantime, I’ll keep working my contacts in D.C.

Victor: Please keep me updated.

Christine: Absolutely.

Victor: Okay.

Christine: I trust you’ll do the same.

Victor: You can count on it, okay?

Christine: Thank you.

Victor: By the way, are you gonna contact nina?

Christine: Uh…yeah. It’s gonna be rough. You know, chance — chance was the light of her life.

Victor: I know. I know. You know, um…he was a hell of a guy. I was proud to call him my son-in-law.

Christine: Again, victor, I’m so sorry for your loss, and if there’s anything more I can do, please don’t hesitate to call.

Victor: You do the same, okay? Take care.

Christine: Yeah, thank you.

Victor: I’ll get the door.

Ashley: Do you want to lie down? I can go upstairs and I can lie down with you and hold you like I used to do when you were a little girl.

Abby: [ Sniffles ]

Ashley: Everybody’s gone and it’s just your dad and I here, so if you need anything or want anything, and you know what, abby? You don’t have to rein it in. If you want to scream at the top of your lungs, if you want to stand up and if you want to just tear this entire room apart, you can do whatever you want. Please just tell us what you need, honey.

Abby: I need chance. I need my husband. People everywhere living with type 2 diabetes

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Abby: No. No, if… if were chance were gone, i would… I would know it. I would feel it. I would feel something.

[ Sighs ] Oh, my god.

Ashley: What?

Abby: Nina — does she know?

Victor: Christine is probably talking to her as we speak.

Abby: She’s gonna be heartbrokeN. I mean, she loves him so much. He’s — he’s her baby. Same way I feel about dominic.

Ashley: She’s our family now, honey. We’ll make sure she knows she doesn’t have to go through this alone, okay?

[ Doorbell rings ]

Abby: Oh, god.

Victor: I’ll get it. I’ll get it.

Abby: I don’t want to see anyone.

Victor: I’ll get it.

Abby: Oh, my god.

Victor: Sharon.

Sharon: Mariah texted me chance may have been killed.

Victor: Come in.

[ Sighs ] There was an explosion at the safe house where chance was doing his undercover work in spain.

Sharon: A bomb?

Victor: Yeah. Place was blown to smithereens. The only things left over were some personal effects.

Sharon: I’m so sorry.

Ashley: Hi.

Victor: Sharon came to offer some comfort to abby, okay?

Ashley: Oh, that’s very kind of you. Um…abby’s in shock. I’m not even sure if anything we’re saying is registering with her.

Sharon: I understand. Trauma like this can be very disorienting.

Victor: I know sharon offered some enormous support to victoria after she had been attacked.

Ashley: I’m not sure how receptive she’ll be. I mean, she did say she wanted to be alone, but you’re more than welcome to make the attempt.

Sharon: I’ll try my best.

Victor: Okay.

Ashley: Thank you.

Mariah: Abby was such a wreck when we left. I really hope my mom can help her somehoW.

Tessa: It was an inspired move sending sharon over there, and hopefully she knows exactly what to say.

Mariah: I was at a loss.

Devon: Yeah, we all were.

Mariah: Abby and chance were so in love. I mean, they had so many plans for the life they wanted to live together, and then, what, it’s just — it’s gone in an instant?

Tessa: I can’t even imagine what that’s like. I mean, your whole world just crashing down on you and… devon, oh, my god, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to be insensitive. I mean, you know exactly what abby’s going through right now.

Devon: You’re fine, tessa. You’re not insensitive at all. It’s fine. You’re absolutely right that i do know, and it’s a feeling that I wouldn’t wish on anyonE.

Phyllis: The stew looks great. I like to try new things.

Jack: Yeah, there are a few new things on here, kind of a cuban-french fusion.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Nikki: I wonder what’s going on over there.

Phyllis: Nick was curious, too.

Jack: Okay, I’m feeling a little left out here. Who is that guy?

Nick: It’s a pi that dad has on retainer. They are no doubt talking about jesse gaines and his current whereabouts.

Jack: Okay, that name doesn’t ring any bells.

Nikki: It’s just someone ashland used to know.

Nick: It’s someone that despises ashland. He showed up in italy to disrupt the wedding, but I ran into him first, locked him in a room in the palazzo until the wedding was over.

Jack: Okay, I was at this wedding. I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. No wonder you were so relieved that the ceremony went off without a hitch.

Nikki: I didn’t know anything about it at the time either. In fact, I know very little now, and that suits me fine.

Nick: It’s a well-kept secret what happened to jesse gaines. I mean, no one has seen him in days. Dad had adam take care of him somehow.

Jack: When you say “take care of him”…

Phyllis: Well, no one knows what that really means, but…

Nikki: It’s nothing drastic.

Nick: Well, I thought you said you didn’t know what went down, mom.

Nikki: Your father happened to find some compromising information about him and used it to convince him to leave ashland alone.

Jack: Classic victor. I would expect nothing less of him.

Phyllis: Yeah, let’s just be glad it wasn’t anything worse.

Jack: Yeah, this is only slightly illegal.

Phyllis: Right, what’s a little blackmail between friends, right? You should be glad, jack, that you had nothing to do with it. Trust me, trust me, you’re better off.

Nick: Alright, you made your point. Let’s drop it. On the outside, I looked fine.

Nikki: Meeting adjourned.

Phyllis: Evidently.

Jack: So I’ve been playing this game online with harrison, you know, just to stay in touch. Kid is so clever. He’s been finding it easier and easier to beat me.

Nikki: Hmm. Why don’t you teach him to play chess?

Jack: I think he’s a little young for that. You guys are both gaming experts. Any recommendations?

Nick: Uh, the game that you’ve been playing with christian, with the racing cars and the animals are drivers. What’s that called?

Phyllis: I don’t know. You know, I’ll go on the internet and do some research, see if something jogs my memory.

Jack: Thanks. I appreciate that.

Phyllis: Sure. Oh, here’s a text from my assistant manager. I have to go. There’s an emergency. This has been lovely. Thank you.

Nikki: Oh. You’re welcome.

Nick: You want me to box up any of the lunch and bring it to you?

Phyllis: I’ll put that in your capable hands.

[ Clears throat ] Excuse me.

Nikki: Is everything okay between the two of you?

Nick: We’re fine.

Jack: You know what? I’m gonna get in touch with my assistant, as well. Got to push back a meeting. I’ll be right back.

Nikki: Okay. Darling, I don’t mean to pry, but it seems like things between you and phyllis are very tense.

Nick: Let’s get back to jesse gaines.

Nikki: Ugh, must we?

Nick: Yeah, I think it’d be a real mistake to look the other way this time, mom.

Nikki: It’s behind us, darling.

Nick: Really? Why would adam be talking to one of dad’s investigators?

Nikki: I don’t know. Why don’t you ask your brother?

Nick: I’m asking you. Dad and adam are keeping on the outside on this, but I know you can find out what’s going on.

Nikki: I would really rather stay out of it.

Nick: You know what that means, don’t you? You’re leaving victoria’s future and wellbeing in the hands of dad and adam. And given adam’s history, are you sure you’re comfortable with that?

Devon: You know how people always talk about grief as if it’s just one emotion? But you guys know that it’s so much more than that. It’s denial. It’s rage, loneliness, despair. The only way that I survived it was by having my family and my friends around me, and then eventually elena to help me, you know, get on track.

Tessa: Well, I’m thankful you did and that you’re happy again. And we just need to keep the faith, and eventually abby will get there, too, one day.

Devon: Yeah, I know she will. It’s just not gonna be easy for her.

Mariah: For dominic either. We saw the way that everything that’s happening has affected him. And abby’s emotions affect him.

Devon: That’s very true.

Mariah: I just have to wonder what kind of impact all of this stress is gonna have on him.

Sharon: Mariah told me the terrible news. Abby, I’m so sorry you have to go through this. And I’m here to listen, if you think it would help to talk.

Abby: I can’t right now yet.

Sharon: Okay, that’s okay. There are no rules. I’ll follow your lead. We can just sit here together, if you’d like.

Abby: Look, sharon, i understand that you are trying to help. But if I open that door, I… I might start screaming and never stop.

Sharon: Hey, you know what? In a situation like this, that’s a very normal fear.

Abby: Look, I have a baby to take care of. Chance is counting on me. Okay? I can’t fall apart. I can’t fall apart.

Sharon: Abby, I don’t see that happening. You’re not gonna fall apart. You might be tired and you need some rest. A shock to the system like this can be very hard on a person physically. But you’ve done it before. You made it through. You’ve suffered some really horrible losses and you survived — brad, colleen.

Abby: My baby girl.

Sharon: I know the kind of strength that it must have taken to carry on after that.

Abby: Chance helped me through that. He convinced me to have hope. He said that [Sniffles] I could be a mother and that we would have a long, happy life together. Why is this happening? Why?

[ Sniffles ]

[ Exhales sharply ] Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Devon: You’re right that abby is definitely gonna need help taking care of dominic while she’s recovering from all this, but she’s gonna have the help.

Tessa: Yeah, dominic’s nanny, ashley.

Devon: Exactly. And you know what? Honestly, I’m hoping that dominic becomes her source of comfort and her reason to get out of bed every day.

Mariah: Maybe. But we just don’t know yet. People react to trauma and grief in different ways.

Tessa: Well, I mean, that’s another reason why having sharon over there is really a good idea. She can keep her eyes open and let us know if there’s any cause for concern.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Abby: I hate that I can’t control my emotions.

Sharon: Hey. Honestly, it’s fine.

Abby: It happened earlier. When christine brought me chance’s wedding ring, I just — I lost it in front of everyone, including the baby. I just… I kept thinking about my husband in that explosion. Terrified and suffering. And I felt like I was falling, like I couldn’t find solid ground.

Sharon: As scary as that must have felt, that’s actually a really normal reaction to trauma.

Abby: How am I gonna go on without my husband? My son is never gonna get to meet his father. How am I gonna face that? I am so afraid.

Ashley: What are you doing?

Victor: We just need to help our daughter, sweetheart. Get her all the support we can.

Sally: How was your meeting?

Adam: Um…tedious.

Sally: Really?

Adam: How was your lunch?

Sally: Productive. And…well… you know what? Maybe I will just show you. Somehow the national inquisitor got some photos of us from tuscany insinuating that you and I are a thing.

Adam: Um…well, I’d say the only real surprise is it took them that long to get around to it.

Sally: Well, I just figured I’d give you a head’s up in case anybody saw it and expected you to comment.

Adam: Everything is…

[ Cellphone rings ] …Fine. It’s chelsea. That was fast.

Sally: Good luck.

Nikki: I hope you didn’t take it seriously before, what nicholas and phyllis were implying.

Jack: You mean about this gaines fellow?

Nikki: I mean, obviously, no harm could’ve come to him. They were just being overly dramatic.

Jack: Yeah, I feel for nicholas these days. Clearly under a lot of pressure. He’s not getting along with victoria or adam or victor.

Nikki: Or phyllis, apparently. How much do you know about the tension between them?

Jack: Maybe the less said, the better. They’ve hit a bump in the road. They’ll figure it out.

Nick: Problem solved?

Phyllis: Yeah.

[ Sighs ]

Nick: I wish you hadn’t left. Now I still owe you lunch.

Phyllis: You don’t owe me anything. It’s fine. I knew what I signed up for. I knew your family history. It didn’t matter to me because i love you and the whole thing is worth it. It was worth it.

Nick: You’re right, it was.

Phyllis: Who are we kidding? This isn’t gonna work.

Recap written by Christine

Adam went to the main house, and Nikki was startled to see him. Adam was trying to get in touch with Victor, and he wasn’t picking up his phone. Nikki said Victor was with Abby. Adam assumed that Victor was getting grandpa time. He hadn’t met his new nephew yet, so he considered dropping by. Nikki said it wasn’t a good time. Adam knew Abby was no fan of his, but he and Connor sent over some baby gifts, and she’d sent them a thank you note. He added that he and Chance went way back. Nikki ordered Adam not to go to the Chancellor estate. Adam asked what was wrong, because maybe he could help. Nikki confided that Chance may have been killed.

Nikki brought Adam up to speed on the explosion. She was sorry to be blunt, since she knew Adam and Chance had a bond. Adam said that Chance saved his life, and he’d thought Chance was invincible. Adam wanted a drink, and Nikki allowed him to use the mini bar. Adam wished he’d been as good a friend to Chance as Chance was to him. Adam couldn’t imagine what Abby was going through, and she had a baby to raise who’d never know his father. When Dominic was old enough to understand, Adam was going to tell him that Chance took a bullet for him. Adam said that Chance’s sacrifice gave him the opportunity to turn his life around. Whenever Adam was tempted to backslide, he’d think about Chance and try to be better, whether Nikki believed it or not. Nikki didn’t doubt that Adam cared about Chance. Adam knew a lot of people would miss Chance. Nikki said that they weren’t going to share this news with anyone until they got official confirmation. Adam understood, but he wondered if Nikki trusted him to keep quiet. He’d assumed she still thought the worst of him. Nikki believed everything Adam said tonight, and when they were in Tuscany, he was very loyal to Victoria and the family. He thanked her. She just hoped this change was permanent and he wouldn’t hurt any of the family again.

Adam acknowledged he’d given Nikki more than enough reason to doubt him for the rest of his life. As he started to say things would be different, she finished the statement with him, because she’d heard that from him many times before. She could see that he’d been successful at changing so far, and she hoped for the best. However, she’d heard that he and Victor were planning something that could have dire consequences. He asked if Nick told her this, and she said yes. She didn’t want to believe it, but she’d been burned by Adam before. Adam abruptly put on his jacket. He didn’t know what he had to do to prove he was on a different path. He felt that everything he did was criticized and doubted, and he always had to defend every move he made. He said maybe in some way, he was the same outlaw, because he didn’t give a damn who believed him or what people thought because he knew in his heart what he’d accomplished, and he knew how far he’d go to become the man he was always meant to be. He rushed out.

Victoria went to Society, where she called Abby and left a message saying she loved her and offering her support. Victoria promised she wasn’t going to share the news with anyone. Nick was at the bar, and he asked Victoria to sit with him and talk. She grudgingly told him he could say his piece but she was leaving when her takeout order was finished. Nick admitted he was hurting. Things weren’t good between him and her, or Victor, or Phyllis. He didn’t know what he did to tick off the universe. The only sibling he was getting along with was Abby, who had her hands full with the baby. He said Victoria was always the one he turned to when his back was against the wall. He said she was like his secret weapon. “I could pick up the phone or just drop by and you were always there for me. I hope you feel the same way about me,” he said. He always felt like it was him and her against the world, or at least against the Newmans. He missed that right now.

Victoria said she used to rely on Nick’s support too. “You were always dependable trustworthy and compassionate until you weren’t,” she said. She felt that he’d taken things beyond giving brotherly advice and attacked the man she loved. He wished he’d handled things differently. She missed the closeness they shared, but he hurt her. He said he didn’t mean to. Nick explained that he’d decided to try and to protect Victoria after she told him she had questions about Ashland and how honest he was being about his past. She said the way he went about it, digging up something so personal and private, was what she’d expect from Victor, not from Nick. Nick didn’t know what he was going to find in New Jersey, and he’d hoped he wouldn’t find anything. He said she was right, he should’ve followed his first instinct and left things alone. If he had to do it all over again, he never would’ve gone to New Jersey. Then he could’ve been in the wedding and enjoyed it with her. They couldn’t go back. He hoped that she could consider his intentions and the love that was behind his actions.

Victoria asked if Nick tried to smooth things over with Victor. Nick said that was a different story. Victor didn’t feel like Nick betrayed him, which Victor shouldn’t, so Nick didn’t feel obligated to apologize to him. Victoria was sorry Victor and Nick were having problems. She thought all the problems stemmed from the same issue – whether to condemn or protect Ashland. Nick said Ashland was the catalyst. The core of Nick’s problem with Victor was always the same – Victor embraced them when they fell in line and cast them aside when they defied him. Victoria thought it was more complicated than that. She asked if he tried hearing Victor out. The last time Nick and Victor talked, Victor didn’t get it. The only thing Nick cared about was fixing things with Victoria. Victoria asked what about Phyllis. Given Phyllis’s strong feelings on the family, Victoria would’ve thought she’d be cheering Nick on in his battle against them. Nick said he wasn’t at war with Victoria, and he didn’t want to talk about Phyllis. Victoria noted that Nick said he missed her, but he didn’t trust her enough to confide in him about the woman he loved. He said it depended on whether she was asking because she wanted another chance to say “I told you so,” or if she was asking because she was closer to forgiving him.

Victoria might relish in an “I told you so” about Phyllis, but Nick was her brother, and no matter what, he came first. It wasn’t going to be easy, but she was going to try and forgive him. She said they would need family to rely on sooner than they might think. He asked if it was because of Ashland. She said they just needed to be able to depend on each other as a family. He wanted to regain her trust. She said he could start by telling her what was going on with Phyllis. He said that he thought the relationship was over, probably for good. He figured Victoria thought it was for the best. “That’s who you think I am?,” she asked. She’d never be friends with Phyllis. Phyllis hurt her a lot. Nick said Victoria hurt Phyllis too. Victoria agreed. She said she never should’ve gone after Phyllis’s hotel. Nick said that was the beginning of the problems with Phyllis. He’d felt like Victoria was asking him to choose between Phyllis and the family. Victoria clarified that she never wanted Nick to get involved in that. Nick said that in Tuscany, he told Phyllis not to get involved, and it hurt her. He said that if Victoria was hoping for a break up, she got what she wanted. Victoria said that wasn’t her mindset anymore. She felt that life was a gift, and to squander that gift by being angry and cruel seemed senseless. He assumed Ashland’s health crisis put things in perspective. She said that was a big part of it. She wouldn’t denigrate what Nick and Phyllis shared and could share in the future. Victoria thought that Phyllis might be the one person who could make and keep Nick happy. “you aren’t the only one,” Nick said.

Adam arrived at Society and approached his siblings. He assumed Nick and Victoria had reconciled, and he congratulated them. He said his invitation to the sibling reunion got lost in the mail. Nick told Adam not to play that black sheep victim act, not when Adam and Victor were thick as thieves. Adam wasn’t playing games, he was just happy to see Victoria and Nick getting along. Victor’s PI arrived, and Adam excused himself and sat with the man.

Nick told Victoria that this was the second time he’d seen Adam with Victor’s PI. He thought there was a plot going on. Victoria said it was nothing for Nick to worry about. Nick assumed Victoria was aware of what was going on. She didn’t know all the details, and she was glad she didn’t. She told him that he didn’t want to get involved either. Nick joked that they’d been apart so long that Victoria didn’t know him anymore. He introduced himself and said he liked getting involved. She said Victor and Adam were planning something against ChancComm. He wondered about her being okay with them going after Billy’s company. She said that if Billy wanted to play in the big leagues, he had to be able to handle the retaliation. Nick said things could get dicey. Victoria made sure that her kids wouldn’t get impacted. She said Billy drew first blood when he flew a blackmailer halfway across the world to stop her wedding. Nick couldn’t argue with that or defend Billy, but it was weird to hear Victoria talk like that. She said she wasn’t Billy’s keeper. It just sounded to Nick like Victoria was on Adam’s side, and he found that odd. Victoria said she wouldn’t go that far. She was grateful Adam helped with the wedding, but she’d always be a little suspicious of him. She said that Nick was bro-ing it up with Adam, drinking beer and watching sports. Nick said he tried to befriend Adam, but then he saw how Adam was sucking up to Victor. Nick did admit that Adam made a semi-sincere offer to play peacemaker between Nick and Victoria. Victoria thought it must be hard for Nick to see Adam and Victor grow closer as Nick drifted away. Nick was just grateful Victoria was giving him a second chance. Victoria said they seemed to be one step closer to being okay. Nick was hoping they were further along, but Victoria said one step was all she could do right now. She left. Adam’s meeting finished and he joined Nick. Nick asked why Adam was spending so much time with the PI. Adam said it was just Newman Media business.

Nick asked what kind of Newman Media business required a PI. Adam said he wasn’t going rogue. Adam knew, per Victor, that Nick was feeling like an outcast in the family. Adam knew what that felt like. Nick asked if he ever found it disturbing that Victor loved playing musical chairs with his kids, one minute you were in, then Victor changed the tune, and you were out. Adam said sometimes people put themselves on the outside. Nick had to wonder how far people would go for a seat at the table. Adam said Nick had nothing to worry about. Nick said that if he found out Adam was planning something malicious, it’d mean Adam was a monster. Adam said they shouldn’t be taking shots at each other, with everything the family was going through. Nick asked what that meant. Adam didn’t elaborate. He said something vague about how things were always hard for the Newmans, then he left. Nick’s eyes narrowed.

Phyllis met Amanda at Crimson Lights. Amanda said she’d have a huge glass of wine right now if she didn’t need to testify against her grandfather tomorrow. Amanda talked about Sutton trying to get her on recording admitting that she was testifying against him out of vindictiveness, so he could give the recording to his lawyers and taint her testimony. She said Devon came home early and they took care of it together. Phyllis wanted Amanda to be careful, because Sutton was desperate and crazy man. Amanda said she was fine. Phyllis reiterated her point, adding that Sutton took out Amanda’s father, and he could do the same to Amanda.

Amanda appreciated the concern, but Sutton wasn’t foolish enough to tamper with her brakes the day before the trial. Amanda said that Sutton could still win the case. Phyllis disagreed since Amanda was the star witness, and Michael was the best of the best. Amanda hoped Devon would be able to make it to the trial. Phyllis asked why he wouldn’t. Phyllis rolled her eyes when Amanda said that Devon was spending a lot of time with Abby. Amanda said that it seemed like Chance was really gone. “He’s dead?!” Phyllis exclaimed as Amanda signaled her to quiet down and expressed regret about telling Phyllis. Amanda told Phyllis there was an explosion, and no one had seen Chance since. Phyllis was surprised Nick didn’t tell her. Amanda explained that the family was keeping it quiet until Abby wanted to go public, so she asked Phyllis not to disclose it to anyone. Phyllis promised she wouldn’t say anything.

Phyllis said this thing with Chance put her problems in perspective. Amanda didn’t realize Phyllis was having problems. Phyllis said it seemed like things were over between her and Nick. Phyllis said it was Nick’s family. Amanda was surprised because Nick and Phyllis loved each other. Phyllis said it seemed to be conditional love. She thought the relationship was killed by the death of a thousand cuts. Amanda was sorry, because Nick and Phyllis had something special. “We did, but I guess it ran its course,” Phyllis said. Amanda asked what Phyllis was going to do. Phyllis planned to just go on with her life without Nick. Amanda insisted that they plan a girls’ trip to Vegas and pamper themselves. Michael called wanting to meet Amanda tonight. Amanda was concerned about leaving Phyllis. Phyllis insisted that she was fine, she was going to go to bed. She laughed off her plight, saying she’d broken up with Nick a hundred times before. Phyllis smile faded, and she said she only had herself to blame.

Phyllis went to the hotel. She wrote a text asking Nick if he was okay, but she deleted it. Meanwhile, back at Society, Nick picked up the phone to call Phyllis, but he didn’t send the call through.

Billy came home and told Lily that Gaines was safely at the motel. Lily had a bad feeling about this. She didn’t think Gaines could be trusted, and even if he could be, he was trouble. She didn’t believe his whole story about the harrowing escape from Tuscany. Billy conceded that it was problematic. Lily said that they were trying to protect ChancComm, but Gaines was out for blood.

Billy promised to have the team look at every aspect of the story before they pulled the trigger on Gaines. Lily didn’t see this ending well. He said it’d end with ChancComm staying intact. They debated because he wanted to be proactive, and she wanted to take a few steps back. The more she thought about this situation with Gaines, the more she distrusted it. She wouldn’t go back on the decision not to publish the story. He said they didn’t have to publish the story, just threaten Victor and Adam with it to keep them from going after ChancComm. She wasn’t okay with blackmail. He didn’t love the idea either, but going up against Newman Media called for desperate measures. She said it was underhanded and dirty, but he countered that Victor and Adam would play dirty too. She noted that his plan hinged on trusting a man who disappeared on him in Italy. She asked why Gaines would accept a blackmail deal that only benefited ChancComm. Gaines already said he wanted to take down Victor, Adam and Ashland.

Billy wasn’t trying to sic Gaines on the Newmans like a rabid dog. This was purely a defensive measure. Lily said that could provoke the Newmans even more. She asked if he really wanted to get into this long drawn out battle with Adam and Victor. She said it wasn’t business, it was purely personal. She felt like Billy was trying to prove something that he didn’t need to prove. She noted that he didn’t get a payoff in Tuscany. Billy said he could’ve blown Ashland out of the water with that video, but he didn’t. He deleted it and destroyed the best weapon they had. Lily said Billy did that for Victoria. She thought it was time for Victoria to repay Billy. Lily felt that they should ask Victoria for help ending this senseless feud. Billy said that it wasn’t like everyone was going to listen to Victoria. He’d sent Victoria a message, but she didn’t want to meet. Ultimately, he wasn’t going to run to his ex to ask her to protect his company.

Lily was frustrated that Billy would rather go to war with the Newmans than ask Victoria for help. Billy wasn’t sure Victoria would even be willing to help, since she wasn’t thrilled with him at the moment. Lily just wanted Billy to talk to Victoria. Billy said he and Lily had the means to handle this on their own. Lily felt like she was wasting her breath, and she started to go upstairs. He didn’t want the conversation to end like this. She stopped, and he said things weren’t that simple. She scoffed and rushed up the steps.

Recap written by Christine

At the Chancellor house, Abby held Chance’s wedding ring and cried. Ashley rushed over and hugged her. Devon was outside the Chancellor house. He called Amanda to apologize because he wouldn’t be there when she and Michael went over her testimony. He knew this was a big step for her. She knew she had his support, and she promised she’d be fine. She was worried about this Chance situation. She felt Abby and Dominic needed Devon more than Amanda did. She told him to take care of Abby. He said that was one of the reasons he loved her so much. Devon entered the house just in time to hear Abby order everyone to go away. Victor said they’d give Abby space, but they wouldn’t leave her alone. Abby apologized for her outburst, and everyone understood. Abby didn’t sleep well on the couch, because she kept thinking about Chance, so Ashley convinced her to go upstairs and lie down. Abby looked into Dominic’s bassinet, then she and Ashley went up to the bedroom.

Victor and Devon felt bad for Abby. Devon promised to be there for her and the baby whenever they needed him. Victor was sure this made Devon think about the loss of his father. All Devon’s mind had room for was what was best for Abby and the baby. Devon asked if Victor thought Chance might be out there. Victor had highly placed sources in the State Department, and they’d told him there was almost no chance Chance survived. Devon bitterly complained about Chance taking on a dangerous job just after getting married and promising your wife you’d start a family. He also thought it was dumb for Chance to take a personally engraved watch on an undercover mission. He said that could’ve been the thing that cost Chance his life. Victor said Chance probably felt like he had to take the job. Devon countered that Chance didn’t have to do anything – he chose to do it, and he chose wrong.

Devon felt like Chance didn’t uphold his commitment to Abby and the baby. Victor pointed out that they didn’t know all the details – maybe Chance didn’t have much of a choice. Devon maintained that Chance could’ve stayed home, but he didn’t, and now Abby was alone, and his son didn’t have a father. Dominic started crying, and Devon picked him up and said he was sorry. Victor shared Devon’s frustration. Victor thought Abby was lucky to have Devon. Devon reiterated that he’d be there for Abby and Dominic. Ashley returned and said Abby was trying to fall asleep. Victor and Ashley convinced Devon to go home and rest. He asked that they keep him in the loop, then he hugged Ashley and left.

Ashley asked what they were going to do. She was worried about Abby. Victor was worried too, and he didn’t know what to do. Ashley wished Chance never took that job. They were glad that Devon was around for Abby. Victor said Devon was good with the baby too. Ashley felt that they were blessed that Devon would be an integral part of their grandson’s life. Abby came downstairs because she heard the baby crying. Ashley said that Devon got him to quiet down before he left. Abby couldn’t sleep. Victor suggested Abby take the anti-anxiety meds. Nina came after getting Christine’s call. She saw Abby, and they hugged. Nina began to cry. Until this moment, it didn’t seem real to her.

Victor hugged Nina and told her that his sources confirmed what Christine said. Nina spent so many years bracing for this moment. Now it had happened, and she felt numb. She walked over and joined Abby by the bassinet. Nina asked for permission to hold the baby, and Abby granted it. Nina held Dominic close.

Sutton showed up at the penthouse. Amanda tried to slam the door in his face, but he caught it and asked for five minutes, stating that this would change everything. Amanda asked how Sutton even knew where she lived. He said his attorney told him Amanda was having material sent to this address. He didn’t know she was living here until she just told him. He was happy for her, since it seemed like Devon was a good man who cared about her. Amanda was outraged and started to go off on Sutton. He asked her to consider how it’d affect her mother and sister if she testified against him. She scoffed about him suddenly caring about Imani and Naya. He maintained that he always protected them gave them a good life. She declared that he controlled Imani and Naya, and he only cared for them if they toed the line. He said she was an accomplished attorney, and she knew things were never that simple. He said Imani and Naya relied on him, and he wanted to help them maintain their financial stability. Amanda said Naya had a husband who could take care of her, and Imani was going into practice with her, so she’d be able to take care of herself. He said he was an old man – he couldn’t die in prison. Was she cold-hearted enough to wish that fate on her own grandfather? Appalled, Amanda asked what about her father’s fate? What about her fate and Hilary’s? All were affected by what he forced Naya to do, Amanda said. She snapped that he never gave a damn about them, and he had a hell of a lot of nerve asking for mercy when he’d never shown any to his family. She regretted letting him in. He thought she let him in because she wanted to see him beg for his life. He believed she wanted him to plead with her not to let him be torn away from his family. “The way that I was torn away from mine?,” she shot back. He said she made a show of righteous anger and said it was all about getting justice, when they both knew that this was about being vindictive. “So what if it is?,” she demanded.

If wanting to see you put away for what you did is vindictive then so be it. Finally you will get exactly what you deserve,” Amanda snarled. Sutton said that it was a mistake to come. He thought she might have a shred of consideration for what she was about to do to her family. Sutton started to leave, but Amanda got in his way. Devon came home and found Amanda demanding that Sutton empty his pockets. She said if he didn’t, she’d call Michael and the police. Devon said he’d watch Sutton while Amanda made the call. Sutton pulled a recorder out of his pocket and Amanda snatched it from him. Just as she suspected. She said all his deep concern about Imani and Naya was a bunch of bull. She said he didn’t care about them, he only cared about himself.

Amanda told Devon that her grandfather wanted to get her on record saying she was only testifying out of vindictiveness, so that his lawyers could use it to taint her testimony. Devon wasn’t surprised, since Sutton would throw all his relatives under the bus. Sutton called Amanda a disappointment. She told him not to dare talk to her about disappointment. Devon kicked Sutton out. Amanda couldn’t believe she almost fell for Sutton’s trap. Devon pointed out that she figured it out. Amanda said that Sutton’s scheme tonight showed that he was scared, which meant he knew the case was strong. She said what Sutton did tonight may help send him to prison. She called Michael and said Sutton goaded her and secretly recorded her. Michael wanted to hear the recording. Devon was proud of the way Amanda handled Sutton. Amanda said that this was the last time she’d let Sutton try to play her. She asked about Chance and Abby. He thought Abby was starting to accept the reality that Chance wasn’t coming back. Abby wasn’t doing well, and Devon was worried about her and Dominic.

Ashland had a health episode while he was alone in Victoria’s office. Victoria came in and found him stumbling around. The issue subsided, and she wondered if he’d be okay to fly to Peru. He was determined to go – the cancer wasn’t responding to the chemo, so there was no time to waste. He wanted to do anything he could to get more time with her. She loved seeing his strength and resolve. He talked about Billy showing up in Tuscany, intent on stopping the wedding, hoping to rob him of the small window of happiness he was fortunate to find with Victoria. Victoria didn’t want Ashland to think about that. Ashland wanted Billy to answer for his actions. Ashland called Victor looking for an update for what he was going to do to Billy. Ashland mentioned that he’d be going to Peru meeting with doctors, so he’d be out of contact for awhile. Victor said that the most important step in the plan had been taking care of, according to Adam. Victor said Billy wouldn’t be able to help himself.

Victoria asked if it was a good idea for Ashland to get involved in this plan against Billy. She suggested it would be better to expend his energy on his recovery. She didn’t want him getting too deep into this plan, because it could cause him stress. He assured her he wasn’t playing a major role in the plan. He just wanted to know how it was moving along. She said that he had enough battles to fight, so he should let her father handle this. He meant it when he promised to be honest with her. He asked if she believed he was completely focused on the battle for his life. She believed him, but she was concerned for him. He reminded her that she said she didn’t have a problem with Newman Media going after ChancComm. He was sure that Billy had entertained thoughts of going after the competition too. She was sure Billy did too. She still didn’t want to know the details, but she did want to know about the possible repercussions this would have on him on his health. He said there was nothing to worry about. She asked if it would have a negative effect on her children.

Ashland swore he’d never go through with anything that had the slightest chance of hurting Victoria’s children. He would’ve done anything to stop Adam and Victor if he thought that her kids would be hurt. He said Billy had proven more than once that he was willing to weaponize ChancComm. Billy dragged Gaines to Tuscany to make a public display at the wedding, and Ashland thought Billy brought this on himself. Victoria didn’t argue that. She said Billy was relentless. Ashland said that what was coming to Billy would be pretty brutal. It had been arranged down to the last detail, but it carried a slight risk. She was concerned it was dangerous. He said no, it was risky in that it might not work.

Gaines showed up on Billy and Lily’s doorstep. His face was dirty, and his hair was unkempt. He wanted Billy to hide him. Billy demanded to know why Gaines disregarded his instructions and left the suite in Tuscany. Gaines saw Billy waffling in Tuscany and wasn’t sure he could be trusted anymore, so Gaines took matters into his own hands. Gaines was going to make his move before the wedding, but Nick showed up and locked him in a suite, then Adam got involved. Adam had Gaines dragged down to a storage room to keep him from disrupting the wedding. Lily asked if Adam held Gaines against his will. Gaines said yes. Then Victor had security drag Gaines to some farm house. Lily guessed they took Gaines’ ID, money and phone so he couldn’t call for help. He confirmed it. At first he thought security was trying to scare him, but then he heard some ominous discussion between the security guards that made him think they were planning to shut him up for good. Billy asked how Gaines escaped. Gaines had been locked in an old wine cellar, and he found a door behind a shelf that lead outside. Lily thought that was convenient. She asked how he got out of Italy with no money or passport. He said he hitchhiked to an airfield and stowed away on a cargo plane to NY. Then he hopped a freight train that took him to Chicago, and he made his way here. Lily asked why Gaines didn’t just access the small fortune that Ashland, Victor and Billy paid him. Gaines didn’t access the money because it would’ve left a trail that the Newmans could use to track him down. Billy and Lily asked why Gaines came here. Gaines wasn’t afraid anymore. He was enraged at the way he’d been treated, and now he wanted to take down Ashland, Victor and Adam. He thought Billy might be interested.

Billy sent Gaines upstairs for a shower. Billy told Lily that if Gaines story was true, it’d have huge ramifications for Victor, Adam and Locke. Lily said they had to be skeptical. Billy agreed they had to look into it. He said they had to get Gaines a place to stay while they vetted his story. Billy didn’t want Gaines to stay at their condo with the kids. He said this was all about getting leverage on Ashland and by extension, Victor and Newman Media. If Gaines was telling the truth, and if he still had that original letter proving that Ashland forged his way into the fortune, they could use it to turn the tables on Victor and Newman media. Lily said those were some big Ifs.

Gaines came downstairs, and Billy said they’d take him to a hotel. Lily said they weren’t taking Gaines at face value. He understood, and he was willing to give them the details they needed to verify every step of his journey. Billy hoped Gaines still had the original letter saying she didn’t leave Ashland any money. Gaines said of course he did.

Billy gave Gaines a baseball hat to wear to hide his face. Lily and Billy quietly talked. He was taking Gaines to the hotel. She wanted him to be careful. He said she was the only one in the world he trusted, and that included Victoria. She was worried, and he said it’d be okay. He said Victor and Adam were coming to destroy everything Billy and Lily built, and he was going to fight like hell to make sure that didn’t happen.

Recap written by Christine

Nick showed up at the cottage unannounced, claiming he wanted to check in with Sharon and the kids. Noah was there, but Faith just left for a study session with Moses. Noah invited Nick to dinner, but he said he didn’t have much of an appetite. Sharon assumed things didn’t go well with Phyllis. Nick said he didn’t want to talk. Noah thought Nick came here specifically because he wanted to talk, and Noah said he and Sharon wanted to listen, because they were Nick’s family. Sharon knew she wasn’t the best to give advice on Phyllis, but she could listen. Nick admitted he did come here wanting to talk, but he wasn’t up for it anymore. Sharon assured him he didn’t have to have his feelings sorted out, since she and Noah knew him better than most, and they knew how messy things could be. Nick explained that he and Phyllis got into another fight, and it didn’t end well. He was pretty sure they were finished. Noah and Sharon were sympathetic. Nick knew Sharon was expecting this when he told her that he was having questions about the relationship. Sharon said she’d never say “I told you so” or imply he deserved heartache. She asked if he thought the relationship could be repaired.

Nick had thought things with Phyllis could be repaired, but Phyllis told him, in no uncertain terms, that she didn’t agree. He said that Phyllis was angry, and nothing he said got through to her, and even when something did get through, she didn’t believe him. He wasn’t sure how things got to this point. He and Phyllis entered the relationship with their eyes open, they didn’t try to change each other, and things were working. He thought things started going wrong in Italy, but Phyllis felt it started way earlier than that. He got drawn into family drama. He guessed he should’ve focused more on his relationship with Phyllis. He tried his best to stay calm with Phyllis, but she was raw and hurting, and throwing accusations at him. Nick flashed back to Phyllis yelling at him. Nick didn’t want to dump all this on Sharon and Noah or for them to feel sorry for him.

Sharon said that caring for Nick wasn’t the same thing as feeling sorry for him. Nick said that after he talked to Sharon and Noah, he went to Phyllis to apologize. Phyllis admitted she wasn’t happy. He said Phyllis also stated that they were in this together and that she was committed to working through their issues. Nick said it turned out that he was the only one willing to put in the effort. He explained that he and Phyllis got caught up in this awkward lunch with Jack and Nikki, and tensions amped up, and Phyllis took off. Nick caught up to Phyllis to try and smooth things over, but she kept shutting him down and telling him the relationship was hopeless. Nick wanted to understand and get past their issues, but Phyllis kept saying that he always put his family before her. He’d told Phyllis that it was impossible to talk about his family with her because she had such strong opinions against them. Nick remembered Phyllis screaming “You’re right. I do hate your family!” Nick didn’t know how to come back from that.

Nick thanked Sharon and Noah for their support and said to give Faith a hug for him. Sharon sent their love to Christian. Nick left. Sharon and Noah felt bad for Nick. Noah knew Sharon was biting her tongue about seeing this coming. Sharon didn’t want to kick Nick while he was down. Sharon admitted she never understood how Nick fooled himself, again, into thinking this relationship would work. Noah liked Phyllis, but he saw that she and Nick were night and day. He never understood the pull Nick and Phyllis had. Sharon thought Phyllis and Nick had the excitement of being forbidden, but once there was no more drama, it got boring and it fell apart. Noah said, maybe, deep down, Nick never got over Sharon.

Phyllis was out of sorts at Crimson Lights as she searched her purse for some money to buy her coffee. Jack showed up, and he swooped in and paid for her order. He wondered if she was flustered was because of the work emergency that caused her to abruptly leave their lunch with Nick and Nikki. She said that she thought she and Nick may have broken up. They got a table, and he urged her to take a deep breath. He said that usually, people were pretty clear on whether or not there was a split. She said they could add lack of clarity to the issues she and Nick were having. She said Jack had a front row seat to the final act with Nick. Jack noticed lunch was strained, but he’d assumed it was a good sign that Phyllis and Nick were having lunch. Phyllis once thought so, but she was sure Jack saw how Nick reacted when she said the slightest thing about Victor. Jack understood why Nick would feel a little awkward after Phyllis criticized his father in front of his mother. Phyllis said that wasn’t it. She felt like Nick reacted the exact same way any time he said something about his family, and she repeated it. Jack acknowledged that the Newman family dynamic was different than that of the Abbott clan. Phyllis didn’t want to be part of it anymore. She faked the work emergency, because she no longer wanted to be part of Nick’s jealousy and judgment. Jack asked what Phyllis meant about jealousy, but Phyllis didn’t hear him because she was still venting. She said all of Nick’s resentment came out and he told her, in no uncertain terms, that they could no be together anymore.

Jack asked what happened. Phyllis was sure Jack didn’t want to hear it. She thought he must be so tired of listening to her. She said she did everything she could support Nick. She was upset that Nick was distracted by Victoria and Ashland during his own daughter’s wedding. She said she supported Nick at Victoria and Ashland’s wedding, but he still thought she didn’t care, and he didn’t understand her point of view. She said she stuffed all that in a box and she supported him. She thought she and Nick were getting somewhere this morning, then they went to lunch. She’d said one little thing about Victor, and Nick shut her down in front of Nikki and Jack. Phyllis realized that she and Nick didn’t deal with their issues, and if they did, it was just on a superficial level. She said the relationship was fluffy and nice on the surface, but rotten inside. She wouldn’t be working this hard if she didn’t care and if she didn’t love him. Phyllis flashed to Nick screaming at her in the fight that took place after she told him that this wasn’t going to work.

Jack suggested that Phyllis and Nick should dig deeper and get it all out. She’d normally agree, but the argument wasn’t productive. Jack thought maybe he could give Phyllis perspective on where Nick was coming from. Phyllis said that she understood where Nick was coming from, but Nick didn’t understand her, and he didn’t want to. She started crying. She said she kept trying to tell Nick that what they had was worth going there for, but he didn’t want to. She thought she had to accept that Nick didn’t want to commit to her. She had another flashback of Nick saying things that hurt her. “You pretending to be superior or taking the high road is absurd,” Nick snapped, during the fight. In the present, Phyllis said that Nick’s lack of respect for her came out during that conversation. “Some things can’t be unsaid,” she told Jack.

It broke Phyllis’s heart and scared her to think about walking away, but that was the only conclusion she had. She didn’t want to fall apart here, and Jack said that they could go somewhere private. He told her that sometimes losing it for a moment helped. She didn’t want to do that. She wanted to go be alone. She said that she and Nick had been here before, so she guessed ending up here again was inevitable. Jack didn’t agree. He said she and Nick had gotten past this before. He suggested that this might be the last time they’d face something like this. Phyllis thought this was the last time, but it wasn’t the way she’d hoped.

Phyllis went home, and Jack called to make sure she made it okay. He said he was there if she needed him. She said he was the best. Phyllis had a flashback to the fight. “Oh please. It’s not a flirtation,” she said. “Then what is it then? Because from what I can tell, the second we have a conflict, you run straight to Jack,” Nick said. Phyllis thought about and decided against calling Nick. Meanwhile, Nick was outside Phyllis’s door. He raised a fist to knock, but he didn’t go through with it.

From their respective locations, Nick and Phyllis both remembered the fight that occurred earlier. She’d told Nick it wasn’t going to work, then she’d gone to her suite. Nick followed, asking how she could say that and then walk off without explaining herself. She argued that all she did was explain herself to him. She said she’d been the loving and doting girlfriend, and he treated her with disdain. He scoffed at her assertion. He didn’t think it was loving and doting to make jokes at his father’s expense in front of his mother and Jack. Nick accused Phyllis of rubbing her flirtation with Jack in his face. Phyllis said it wasn’t flirtation. Nick said that every time he and Phyllis had the smallest conflict, she ran to Jack. She said she went to Jack because when she and Nick weren’t playing video games or having sex, he treated her horribly. She said he pushed her away and it was like he didn’t care about her ideas or opinions. “Your opinions are always that I ignore my family or completely disengage from them and that’s not an option,” he spat. “Oh, my God, that is such a lie! I am turning myself into a pretzel helping you deal with your family,” she yelled. He argued that she asked herself to cut himself off from his family. He contended that she had no appreciation for how hard that would be for him. She ordered him not to even say that to her. She pointed out that she knew what it was like to be connected to the Newman family. Her advice came from hard-learned truths. “Being associated with single members of your family. Particularly your father so don’t you dare say that to me!,” she bellowed. She sobbed that he should have sympathy for her, but she felt like he didn’t. She said that she turned the other cheek because she wanted to be with him. “Don’t do me any favors. You pretending to be superior or taking the high road is absurd,” he shot back. “Okay, this is not gonna work. It’s over. It’s done,” she said.

Phyllis said they kept telling each other that they didn’t have to change, but she’d changed. She wanted more than sex and video games and fluffy and light. She wanted commitment, a confidant, someone who respected her. She wanted an ally. Nick said he wanted someone who didn’t hate his family. “I hate your family. But not for the reasons you think. I hate your family ‘cause you always choose them over me,” she said. He pointed out that he sided with her over Victoria in the fight for the hotel. Phyllis said she knew, and that was great. She thought it was going to be a happy ending, but it wasn’t because he was miserable because he was out of sorts with Victoria and Victor, and he was so jealous of Adam. She thought he wanted to be the golden boy and save the day. She said he’d always go back to roost, and he’d sacrifice her and their relationship because of it. She was in so much pain, and she couldn’t do this anymore. He said he knew. Jack called Phyllis, and Nick saw the name come up on her phone. He said it was perfect timing. “You say you want a confidant and an ally. Well the first sign of trouble, you always turn to [Jack],” Nick said.

After remembering the fight, Nick changed his mind about knocking on the door and walked away.

Ashland went to Victoria’s office, where she was researching the experimental treatment. He said he’d secured an evaluation appointment for the treatment, but the hitch was that he’d have to leave right now. Victoria was happy to hear about the appointment, and she intended to go with him. He wasn’t asking her to go with him. It was only an appointment to see if he was a candidate for the treatment. He said she was already shouldering most of the work at Newman/Locke. She said she wasn’t going to let him go to this evaluation on his own, let alone a trip to Peru. She thought he needed someone there to process the medical information and hold his hand. He tried to dissuade her, and she said she needed to hold his hand. He realized that he wasn’t going to be able to talk her out of going. She asked when they were leaving. Nikki walked in and was delighted because she thought they were talking about leaving on a honeymoon.

Victoria asked if she could fill Nikki in. Ashland said of course, since they were family now. Victoria said Ashland had an opportunity to try an experimental treatment, so they were jumping at the opportunity. Nikki prayed it went well. Ashland appreciated the way she and Victor accepted him. Nikki said that he was their daughter’s husband, so he was an important part of the family. Ashland said they trusted him with their daughter’s heart, and he wanted nothing more than to honor it. Victoria’s love spurred him to fight.

Adam was in his office. He made a call instructing someone to set a trap. Adam then went to Victoria’s office. He hoped she didn’t mind him stopping by. She didn’t respond or acknowledge him in any way. He had a message for Ashland. She said Ashland was on a call. He headed to the couch to wait, but she didn’t want him hanging out in her office. He said he’d text Ashland, that is, unless she’d pass along the message. Adam said he didn’t want to keep it a secret from Victoria, since she was on board with him going after ChancComm. Victoria said she didn’t care if Newman Media went after ChancComm, but she didn’t want any of the details. Adam just wanted to let Ashland know Adam set things in motion. Victoria said she’d pass that along. She mentioned that Ashland wouldn’t be here for whatever was going on, because they were leaving for South America to pursue a new cancer treatment. Adam figured that wasn’t the honeymoon Victoria had in mind. Victoria said that if this worked, it would be the best honeymoon ever. Adam hoped for the best possible outcome. Victoria said thanks. She had faith it would work. She and Ashland just started their lives together, and she refused to give up on it. Adam knew Victoria didn’t give up when she was determined. He looked forward to seeing her and Ashland at their tenth wedding anniversary party. She asked why he thought he’d be invited. He said she invited him to the wedding, so it was required. She disagreed. He felt that they were bantering, like siblings. He said maybe they could build on this almost warm vibe, but she was pretty sure this was as good as it was going to get.

Victoria and Nikki had a meeting out of the office, then Victoria gave Nikki a ride home to the main house. Victoria was going back to the office, and Nikki urged her to go home and rest instead. Nikki felt that Victoria needed to take care of herself if she wanted to be there for Ashland. Victoria thanked Nikki for looking out for her. Victoria was optimistic about Ashland’s chances with the new treatment. Victor called Nikki with the news on Chance. Nikki offered to help if she could. After the call ended, Nikki told Victoria that Chance may have been killed. Victoria felt bad for her sister, and she thought she and Nikki should go be there for Abby. Nikki said Victor and Ashley were already there, and Abby didn’t want any more visitors. There was no official confirmation on Chance, so they had to keep this private. Victoria understood.

At Society, Billy thanked Lily for insisting that they spend some time together. He discreetly scrolled through his phone, which was under the table on his knee. She noted that this was so rare, since he usually couldn’t help multitasking. He agreed with her, then she smiled and revealed that she knew he was secretly checking his phone. He laughed about being busted and said he’d try to learn to relax. They talked about Halloween. Johnny in his adorable costume, and Katie in her scary one. Lily had a sexy costume for the adults-only after-party, which was her, Billy, wine and candy that he’d swiped from his children’s stash. Lily couldn’t believe she was with someone who liked candy corn. Victoria called and asked Billy to take care of the kids while she was out of town. Billy said that was fine. He asked if this was business, because he thought the honeymoon trip wasn’t until next week. She couldn’t get into it. She thanked him for taking the kids, and the call ended.

Billy brought Lily up to speed, and she didn’t mind the kids coming over. He suggested they go home and get some adult time before the kids came. Just as they were about to leave, he saw Victor’s PI come in. Billy suggested dessert instead. The PI took a seat at the bar, which was in Billy and Lily’s earshot. “I can’t believe it. The guy’s gone missing again. He gave the slip to Newman security so we have new marching orders. Find him ASAP,” the PI said in a phone call. He sighed about losing his dinner break, and he left. Billy said that call must be about Gaines. Lily said that proved Adam and Victor didn’t do anything sinister to Gaines. Billy didn’t give them credit for that. Billy thought they should go home to talk, so they left. The PI secretly watched Billy and Lily leave. He then called Adam and said it looked like Billy took the bait. The PI asked what the next move was. Adam said they’d let Billy do what he did best – self destruct.

Billy and Lily got home, and he said that if they could find Gaines before Victor did, they’d have the ammo to stop Victor from going after ChancComm. Lily said there was no proof that finding Gaines would be anything other than a liability. Billy pointed out that Gaines had the proof that Ashland stole Camilla’s estate. Lily said that evidence could ruin Ashland and Victoria’s lives. Billy said they’d use it to blackmail Victor and Adam into leaving ChancComm alone. Lily said no. she was finished humoring Billy on this. “We’re done with Gaines,” she stated. Lily said they’d beat the Newmans by being better, smarter and savvier. They didn’t need anyone else. There was a knock at the door. It was Gaines. He was disheveled and out of breath, and he wanted Billy to hide him.

Recap written by Christine

Victor and Ashley stood in the foyer and watched Sharon leave Abby’s. Victor said Sharon was a good listener, and hopefully she was able to help Abby. Ashley and Victor hated feeling so helpless. Abby was lying on the couch silently weeping. Victor quietly told Ashley that he’d called Nate to come over, just in case Abby needed a doctor. Ashley hoped that wouldn’t be necessary. Ashley thought about the time she had a break with reality, and she hoped Abby didn’t go through that too. Victor agreed, but he said that if Abby did suffer a mental break, he and Ashley would be there to help her through. Later, Nate arrived, and Victor stated that Abby was in denial. Abby and Ashley were in the kitchen making tea. Victor thought Abby might need some low dose anti anxiety pills. Victor stepped away, and Ashley and Abby returned. Abby told Nate that she didn’t need a doctor. Ashley suggested to Nate that this wasn’t a good time. Nate said that he’d been called here as a doctor, but as Abby’s friend, he’d been where she was. He said he was there to talk and check on her. He asked her to just hang out with him for a few minutes. Abby sent Ashley out of the room. Nate noted that Abby thought Chance was still out there. Abby said that she wasn’t in denial. She pointed out that no one found his body. She didn’t just think Chance was alive – she knew he was alive.

Nate talked about how hard it was to admit his fiancee was gone. Abby said that was different, because he saw Carolyn, and he knew the truth. Abby said she didn’t have that. She couldn’t think Chance was gone. Nate understood, and he thought it was common for people to feel this way after losing someone abruptly. Abby had her moments of doubt, like when Christine gave her the ring, but she saw things clearly now. Abby said nothing had changed – Chance was gone prior to this situation, and he was still gone. Chance promised he would come home, and Abby knew that he still would. She felt that she needed to have faith in her husband. Nate said he understood, and Abby ordered him to stop trying to placate her. Nate suggested that Abby was overreacting because she was running on fumes. He asked if she’d eaten. She said she had a sandwich earlier, and he was skeptical. He told her that if Chance was out there, she owed it to him and the baby to stay healthy. He asked when she last slept, and she said it didn’t matter. He ordered her some anti anxiety medication so she could rest. Abby insisted that she needed to be awake for Dominic. Ashley returned and said she’d care for the baby while Abby slept. Abby agreed to go to sleep, but only on the couch, so she could be close by in case they heard anything.

At Crimson Lights, Devon couldn’t believe Chance could be dead. Mariah thought Christine brought definitive proof that he was with the watch and ring, but Tessa pointed out that Chance might not have been wearing them when the bomb went off. Devon said that if Chance was dead, Abby would need their help accepting the truth. Mariah looked into Dominic’s stroller and told him it was too bad he had to be so brave. Tessa and Devon exchanged a concerned look. Mariah told the baby that he’d been bombarded by her stress hormones when they were locked in the room. She’d tried to stay calm, so that he wouldn’t get upset. She asked the others if they thought the baby was okay. Tessa thought he was perfect in every way, but she thought that this situation may have brought up some trauma for Mariah. Mariah appreciated the concern, but she was fine. Mariah asked Devon to back her up. Devon didn’t think Mariah could blame Tessa for looking out for her – he said Tessa was very good at it. Mariah thought Tessa was the best, and Tessa knew her better than anyone. Mariah said this wasn’t about her – it was about Dominic. Mariah didn’t want him to absorb the negative energy in the house. Devon understood, but he said they had to trust Ashley and the rest of the family to take care of Dominic. Tessa was sure the baby would be loved and cared for. Tessa said that she wouldn’t let anything bad happen to Mariah. She asked if they could go home and rest. Mariah glanced at the baby, then she said yes. Tessa smiled until Mariah added that she wasn’t ready to leave yet, because she wanted to stay with Dominic.

Devon got two texts. One from Abby saying she wanted him to bring the baby home and one from Ashley saying Nate was with Abby. Mariah asked if Devon was sure it was a good idea to take the baby home. Devon thought it was fine for Dominic to be with his mother and grandparents. Tessa agreed that Dominic belonged at home. Mariah asked Devon if he needed help taking the baby home. He didn’t. Tessa asked if she could take Mariah home now. Devon said Mariah protected Dominic when she was kidnapped, and now she could let other people take care of him. Mariah said goodbye to the baby, then she left. Cue another worried glance between Tessa and Devon.

After Mariah and Tessa left, Sharon arrived and chatted with Devon. He asked about Abby, and Sharon said the first stage of grief was denial. Sharon wished there was a way to quickly fix people, especially in times like these. There was nothing Sharon could do since Abby wouldn’t even talk about her feelings. Devon thought he had a way to cheer Sharon up. He let her spend a bit of time with Dominic, and it put a smile on her face. Devon said Dominic was magic. Sharon hoped the baby could bring some of that joy to his mom. Sharon thought Dom was lucky to have Devon, but Devon felt like he was the lucky one to have the baby in his life. Devon said that being with Dominic was like making up for things he missed out on with his child with Hilary. Sharon said that Dominic would miss out on being with Chance. “You two are a perfect match,” Sharon said of Dominic and Devon. Devon guessed so, but he wished that it didn’t have to be this way. He didn’t think it was fair that Dominic and Abby lost Chance. Sharon said Abby had to find a way to move on from Chance, which would be hard with a baby in the house. Sharon hoped the baby would give Abby a purpose, but sometimes when you went through something like that, it could be hard to get out of bed. Devon knew firsthand. He fell apart after losing Hilary. He hoped Abby didn’t go through a self destructive phase.

Mariah and Tessa went home. Mariah took a work call. After it ended, Mariah admitted that she couldn’t stop thinking about the baby. Tessa looked concerned, and Mariah commented that her girlfriend was staring at her. Tessa said she found Mariah attractive. Mariah knew that wasn’t why Tessa was staring. Mariah promised she was fighting all her urges when it came to the baby. Tessa was worried because it seemed like Mariah thought she was the only one who thought she could properly take care of Dominic. Mariah thought that Tessa understood she had a bond with Dominic. Tessa did understand, but she was concerned that Mariah’s instinct to shield Dominic from danger was going to cause Mariah pain.

Tessa asked if that was too much honesty. Mariah said no. “I needed to know if I was reverting back with the baby. And I guess I was,” Mariah said. Tessa guessed she shouldn’t worry, but she was. Mariah loved Tessa for that. Tessa asked if Mariah really did think she was the only one who could properly take care of Dominic. Mariah couldn’t say for sure. She recognized that other people were qualified to take care of him. Tessa sensed that Mariah thought her connection with Dominic counted for more. Mariah said she was the one who carried Dominic and felt him grow and change inside her, and she was locked with him in a room. Tessa said that would give Mariah a lifelong bond with Dominic, but other people had special connections to Dominic too. Mariah understood that Abby was Dominic’s mother, but Abby needed a break. She also acknowledged that Devon contributed to Dominic coming into the world, but she said that it wasn’t the same as her contribution. She knew Ashley and Nina loved their grandson, but she didn’t know if they could love him the way Mariah did. Tessa said that wasn’t Mariah’s call to make. Mariah knew it was Abby’s choice, even if Abby wasn’t in the best frame of mind to make decisions right now. Tessa said that wasn’t for Mariah to judge. Tessa said that even if Abby wasn’t 100%, Dominic wouldn’t be neglected. Mariah knew other people were qualified to take care of Dominic, but in her heart, she didn’t think that was the way it should be.

Tessa asked if Mariah was saying Dominic would rather have her take care of him. Mariah wasn’t saying that. She was just saying she had feelings. She knew Tessa and Devon were worried about her attachment to the baby. Mariah said she wasn’t even thinking about what she wanted or needed, she was thinking about Dominic. She said Dominic lost a father he’d never known, and he was living in a hose full of grief and trauma. Tessa said Dominic was loved and cared for. Mariah said this wasn’t the life she promised Dominic when they were locked in the room together. Tessa said life was unpredictable and Mariah couldn’t control the future. Mariah felt like she could keep Dominic safe. Tessa said there was nothing Mariah could do about Dominic’s father dying unexpectedly. Mariah felt like she’d failed, because she didn’t protect Dominic.

Mariah said she agreed to be a surrogate because she thought she was helping build a family – a mother, father and baby. Now the baby was surrounded by grief and loss, and Mariah felt like she didn’t keep her promise to protect him. Tessa said that Mariah went above and beyond for Dominic. Mariah said she was Dominic’s godmother, and she couldn’t even be there for him the way she should be, because she was not his… Tessa asked if Mariah wished Dominic was her son wand not Abby’s. Mariah admitted she felt like she should be Dominic’s mom. Tessa didn’t know what to say. Mariah said she wasn’t acting on the feeling, and she knew it was fear talking. Mariah just wanted to be honest. Mariah knew it wasn’t right to feel that way, but it was a fleeting thought that came into her head once in awhile. Tessa thought they should examine this and figure out how to proceed. Mariah was caught off guard, because she thought Tessa was going to run screaming for the hills. Tessa said never. Tessa loved Mariah, and they were going to work through this together. Mariah loved Tessa too. Jabot called, and Mariah put the talk off because she needed to work. Tessa asked if Jabot could wait, but Mariah promised it’d only take a few minutes. Mariah got on her computer, and a worried Tessa paced with tears in her eyes.

Back at the Chancellor house, Abby finally ate, and she decided to take the medication once it arrived and take a nap. She was so tired that she thought she’d be able to rest even without the pills. Nate understood how much Chance meant to Abby. Nate said that when he and Abby were together, she made it clear that she didn’t want anything serious because her prior relationship fell apart. Nate saw Abby fall hard and fast for Chance, and he saw that the love was still there. Abby said that Nate was speaking like Chance was gone, and they didn’t know that. He said that was his mistake. Nate left. Abby held Chance’s ring and said that he couldn’t be gone.

Nate went to Crimson Lights and told Sharon and Devon that he just saw Abby. They all talked about their concern for Abby. Devon asked what Nate thought of taking Dominic home. Devon expressed concern about Dominic absorbing negative energy. Nate thought it would be good for Abby to see her son, and there were other people around to take care of the baby if Abby got emotional. Devon decided to take Dominic for a walk in the park before he took him home. After Devon and the baby left, Sharon looked at an old photo of Cassie.

Victor urged Ashley to rest, but she decided to go make some food to keep busy, and she asked him to watch over Abby. Abby was lying on the couch. She drifted off to sleep and had a dream. She was alone in the darkened mansion staring at her phone. She said she knew Chance wouldn’t leave her alone, so she’d find him. Abby teleported from the mansion and appeared in the Grand Phoenix lobby, in a neon blue ball of light. Abby remembered that this was when she first saw Chance after he returned to town. He fell into her life during the hostage crisis. She recalled that he wanted her to help him distract the bad guy. It had been terrifying and thrilling. She told Chance that she needed him to show her that they were in this together.

Abby recorded herself talking to Chance on her phone. She recounted the moment when he busted her for faking the theft at The Grand Phoenix. She said he caught her red handed, but they had chemistry, and it was fun, flirtatious and sexy. They’d agreed that they’d make great partners. She hired him as head of security to keep him from working dangerous cases. She was adamant that he was supposed to leave the danger behind and stay in Genoa City with her. The blue light returned and enveloped Abby. The light deposited Abby at Society, where she and Chance had their first kiss. She said she and Chance had been so good together. She cried and asked Chance to come kiss her now. The light transported Abby to the hotel suite where she and Chance first made love. She remembered that they laid in bed all day and traded stories about their scars. All of his were from cases. She was upset that he’d gone back to that dangerous job.

Abby said that she and Chance made vows and talked about their future and a family. She asked how he could just leave her and have her go through with a surrogacy. She knew he was too good and too honest for it to end this way. She knew something was keeping him from coming home. She vowed to find him. Abby ended up at the park, where she first told Chance he loved him and where he proposed to her. She saw the Baby’s first Christmas ornament Chance gave her on a bush at the park. She asked how he could leave her knowing he might not come home. Didn’t he love her enough to stay? “I believed in you, Chance. I believed in us. I don’t know what to believe now,” she said.

Back in real life, Devon took Dominic to the same park that Abby was visiting in her dream.

Abby jolted awake when she heard Dominic crying. Devon had just brought him home. Abby picked him up and held him close.

Recap written by Christine

Nikki and Jack ran into each other at Crimson Lights. He congratulated her on the great job she did at the wedding. They were praying Ashland’s treatments were effective, so that Victoria and Harrison wouldn’t lose him. Nikki had reservations about the pairing at first. Jack assumed that was because of Ashland’s well-deserved reputation as a ruthless businessman, which Jack got a taste of when Ashland went after Jabot. Nikki thought Ashland appeared to be completely devoted to Victoria, which was something that had been lacking in her life. Nikki thought Victoria was being a realist about Ashland’s prognosis. Jack respected that courage. He said nothing was more important than the time spent with those you loved, even if that time was fleeting. With all the whirl of wedding prep and the merger, Nikki wasn’t sure Victoria had the time to really sit and think about what could happen, but it would hit her eventually, and Nikki dreaded it.

Nikki had to get back to the office. Jack tried to convince her to go have a proper lunch with him instead. He wanted to go to this Moroccan place. He said they’d just pulled off one of the most satisfying feats of parenting – launching their children into fulfilling marriages. She wasn’t sure they could take credit for that. He said they could celebrate their good fortune. She agreed to lunch, but she asked to go to Society instead, since that was closer to work. He agreed. He helped her into her jacket, and they left.

Victor, Devon, Mariah and Christine were with Abby at her home. Victor asked if the ring Christine brought was Chance’s. Abby collapsed into her father’s arms. Victor helped Abby into a chair, and Mariah wrapped an arm around her friend. Abby said this couldn’t be real – there must be some explanation. Ashley arrived, and Christine and Victor brought her up to speed. Ashley asked if they’d found anything. Christine explained that, given the force of the explosion, it was going to take time to identify all the remains. Ashley rushed over to Abby and hugged her. At that moment, Dominic started crying, and Abby picked him up and tried to soothe him. Devon now had Dominic, and Ashley asked everyone to give Abby space. Devon said he’d take Dominic for a walk, and Mariah said she’d go too. Abby didn’t want Dominic to go. Ashley said that little boy was loved, and they’d take good care of him, just like she and Victor would take good care of Abby. Devon promised they wouldn’t be gone long. Abby relented.

Victor walked Christine to the door, and they agreed to keep each other updated. He asked if she was going to inform Nina, and she said yes. She knew it’d be rough, since Chance was the light of Nina’s life. Victor had been glad to call Chance his son in law. Christine was sorry for Victor’s loss. They hugged, and she left. Ashley told Abby they could lie down together like they did when she was little. Abby didn’t want to. Ashley told Abby that everyone was gone now, so she could let it all out. Ashley asked what Abby needed. Abby said she needed her husband, and Ashley hugged her. Abby held the ring and said if Chance was gone, she’d feel it. She asked if Nina knew, and Victor said Christine was going to call her. Abby said Chance was Nina’s baby, and just like Abby felt about Dominic.

Sharon showed up at the Chancellor house and told Victor that Mariah texted saying Chance may have been killed. Victor said the place Chance was staying was blown to smithereens, and the only things left were person effects. Ashley joined Sharon and Victor. Ashley said Abby was in shock, and Ashley wasn’t sure Abby registered anything people were saying. Victor said Sharon had been enormously supportive when Victoria was attacked. Ashley wasn’t sure Abby would be receptive, but she said Sharon was welcome to try.

Sharon went to Abby and offered to listen. Abby said if she opened that door, she might start screaming and never stop. She couldn’t fall apart because had a baby to take care of – Chance was counting on her. Sharon didn’t think Abby would fall apart. Sharon said Abby had suffered some really horrible losses, and she survived – Brad, Colleen. “My baby girl,” Abby added. Abby said Chance helped her through that and convinced her to have hope that she could be a mother and they could have a long happy life. She started crying.

Abby hated that she couldn’t control her emotions. Sharon said it was fine. Abby said when Christine brought her the wedding ring, Abby lost it in front of everyone, including the baby. She thought about what Chance must’ve felt like, terrified and suffering. She felt like she was falling. Sharon said that was a normal reaction. Abby asked how to go on without her husband. Her son would never meet his father. Victor started doing something on his phone, and he told Ashley that he was getting Abby support.

Mariah, Tessa, Devon and the baby were at Crimson Lights. Mariah and Tessa were talking about what it must be like to have the person you loved ripped away in an instant, when Tessa realized they were being insensitive to Devon. Tessa apologized and acknowledged that Devon knew exactly what Abby was going through. Devon said Tessa wasn’t being insensitive. He said he did know what Abby was feeling, and it wasn’t something he’d wish on anyone. He talked about grief, which he’d only survived with the support of his family and friends, and eventually Elena. Tessa was thankful Devon survived and found happiness. She said they had to have Faith that Abby would get there too. Devon said things weren’t going to be easy for Abby. Mariah said itw wouldn’t be easy for Dominic either. She said Abby’s emotions affected the baby. She wondered what kind of impact the stress would have on him. Devon hoped Dominic would become Abby’s source of comfort and her reason to get out of bed. Mariah said maybe, but they didn’t know. She said people react to trauma in different ways. Tessa said Sharon could let them know if there was cause for concern.

Adam ran into Sally and said hi. She wondered if he’d be friendly funny down to earth Adam today, or officious Adam, busy CEO who had no time to waste on a peon like her. He admitted that he’d been too abrupt yesterday, though he’d already apologized. She commented that mea culpa Adam was an intriguing new addition to the cast of characters. He thought that seemed fascinating. She invited him to lunch. He wished he could, but he was all booked up, and he was here for a meeting. He hoped she wasn’t taking this personally. She said that this was just a game to her, and she was going for best three out of five. Then she realized this may have been her third rejection. He said it wasn’t, because they agreed to keep things professional. She teased that she was glad, because she wouldn’t get saddled with his chronic mood swings. He wished he could have lunch with her, because that would be more entertaining than the person he was meeting with. She suggested he cancel, but he couldn’t. She asked who he was meeting with. They bantered, and he wouldn’t tell her who he was seeing. She tried guessing, and he kept it vague. She told him he was good at being mysterious. She wondered if this had something to do with that missing man Billy mentioned – Gaines. “Oops. Guess I wasn’t supposed to bring his name up anymore,” she said, when his smile faded.

Adam noticed Sally ordered her food to go, and he hoped that wasn’t on his account. She said she was planning to work through lunch anyway. She told him about all the inquiries she was getting from people who wanted a wedding dress like Victoria’s. She took it as a sign that she was right not to give up on her endeavors. Speaking for Newman Fashions, Adam was looking forward to seeing what Sally and Chloe came up with next. Sally asked if Chelsea would be joining them at the company. Adam didn’t know when or if Chelsea would be up to working again. Sally asked if she shouldn’t have brought that up, Adam said it was fine. He hoped Chelsea returned and picked up her life again. The private investigator arrived, and Sally told him to have fun with his not-at-all-mysterious meeting.

Nick and Phyllis were in her suite. He repeated his question – were they in this together or not? She was thrown that he even had to ask her that. She thought it was clear that she was in this with him, since she was working so hard. She thought that, thought it didn’t feel good now, it’d turn out good in the end. She asked to put this on hold, since she was feeling hungover. He said yeah. He offered to take her out to lunch, since theirs was cold, and she said thanks. She went into the bathroom and stared in the mirror.

Phyllis and Nick went to Society. Nick noticed that Adam was across the room with one of Victor’s most trusted private investigators. Nick observed their body language and concluded that Adam and the P.I. were scheming about something. “Mm-hmm,” Phyllis replied, and Nick asked what that meant. She told him he knew what it meant. She wasn’t going to comment on this situation, because she didn’t want to continue the pattern where she said something supportive, and he misinterpreted it, then they argued. He didn’t want her to feel like she was on eggshells around him. He wanted her unvarnished opinion. She told him to remember that he’d said this. She asked who cared what Adam was up to. She asked if he could let it go and focus on their relationship. Nick reminded Phyllis that he asked her to back off Tara and Sally, and she ended up being right about them. She argued that it wasn’t the same thing, since she was protecting Summer. She asked who cared what Adam and Victor were plotting. He didn’t look at it that way. She wished he’d protect himself and stay out of it. She didn’t expect him to take this advice, but this was how she felt. He’d tried staying out of it more times than he could count, but things always blew up into a massive crisis, and he’d get sucked back in so he could protect the people he loved – his sisters, mother and children. He theorized that it was best to try and avert this mess now instead of waiting for the other shoe to drop. She didn’t think that was best. She’d be happy if, between disasters, he put more attention on their relationship. He suggested they go eat lunch somewhere else.

Just as Phyllis and Nick were about to leave, Jack and Nikki showed up. Nick explained that they were leaving because he didn’t want to be around Adam. Nikki extended an invitation to join them for lunch instead. Phyllis asked if she was included in the invite. She wasn’t sure because of their history. Nikki said they got along in Italy. Nikki was hoping to convince Nick to reconcile with Victoria, and Nikki thought she’d have a better chance at with Phyllis’s support. Nick said he and Phyllis had to talk about some stuff, so he declined. Just as he said this, Phyllis said she’d love it if he reconciled with his sister, so she accepted the invitation.

At their table, Nikki and Nick looked over at Adam and the PI. Jack asked who that was. Nick said that was a PI that Victor had on retainer. He was sure the PI and Adam were talking about Jesse Gaines and his current whereabouts. Jack asked who that was. Nikki only said it was someone Ashland used to know. Nick added that Gaines despised Ashland, and Nick locked him into a room to stop him from disrupting the wedding. Jack had no idea all this happened at the wedding. Nikki didn’t know about it at the time either. She knew very little now, and that suited her just fine. Nick said Gaines hadn’t been seen in days – Victor had Adam take care of him somehow. Jack asked what that meant, and Phyllis said nobody knew. Nikki said that Victor found some compromising information on Gaines and used it to convince him to leave Ashland alone. Jack said that was classic Victor. Phyllis pointedly told Jack that he should be glad he wasn’t involved. Nick got the message and asked Phyllis to drop it. Adam and the PI finished their meeting. Adam nodded at Nikki on his way out. Jack changed the subject and said he was playing an online game with Harrison. Since Nick and Phyllis were gaming experts, Jack asked if they had more recommendations. The tension between Nick and Phyllis was still there, but he asked he about that game she played with Christian. She didn’t know the name, but she said she’d look online. She lied and said she got a message from the hotel manager, and she had to go.

Phyllis left. Nikki asked if everything was okay with Nick and Phyllis. Nick said they were fine. Jack excused himself too. Nikki didn’t meant to pry, but she’d noticed the tension. Nick changed the subject to Jesse Gaines. He thought it’d be a real mistake to look the other way. Nikki said this was behind them. Nick was skeptical, since Adam was meeting with the PI. Nick said Victor was keeping him on the outside of this, but Nikki would be able to find out the details. Nikki didn’t want to be involved. Nick said Nikki was leaving Victoria’s well being in the hands of Victor and Adam. He asked if she was comfortable with that, given Adam’s history.

Nick left, and Jack returned. Nikki hoped Jack didn’t take Nick and Phyllis’s insinuations about Gaines seriously. She said obviously, no harm could’ve come to Gaines. She thought Nick and Phyllis were being over-dramatic. Jack felt for Nick, who wasn’t getting along with Victor, Victoria, or Adam. “Or Phyllis, apparently,” Jack added. Nikki asked what Jack knew. He didn’t think he should say much. He said that Nick and Phyllis hit a bump in the road, but they’d figure it out.

Nick went to the hotel and told Phyllis that he still owed her lunch. She said he didn’t owe her anything. “I knew what I signed up for. I knew your family history. It didn’t matter to me because I love you and the whole thing is worth it. It was worth it,” she said. “You’re right, it was.” he replied. “Who are we kidding? This isn’t gonna work,” she said.

When Adam got to work, Sally walked in and asked how his meeting was. It was tedious. He asked about her lunch. She said it was productive. She showed him her phone. The National Inquisitor got photos of Sally and Adam and insinuated that they were together. He wasn’t surprised. She just wanted to give him a head’s up. Just as Adam said everything was fine, Chelsea called. Sally left, and Adam declined the call.

Recap written by Christine

Abby’s parents were there for her after Chance was thought dead. Sharon tried to help Abby work through her emotions. Mariah, Tessa and Devon talked about Abby’s predicament and vowed to be there for her. Mariah was worried about what effect Abby’s stress would have on Dominic. Adam had to turn down Sally’s lunch invitation because he had a meeting. Sally theorized that Adam’s meeting was about Jesse Gaines. Sally asked if Chelsea would be working at Newman Media. Adam didn’t know, but he hoped so. A tabloid posted some pictures of Sally and Adam together an insinuated that they were a couple. Chelsea called Adam, and he declined the call. Nick and Phyllis put their talk on hold and went to lunch. While out, Nick saw Adam meeting with Victor’s PI. Phyllis and Nick disagreed on whether or not Nick should get involved. Nikki and Jack joined Nick and Phyllis. Nick told Jack a bit about Jesse Gaines. Nikki said that Victor blackmailed Gaines into leaving Ashland alone. Nikki and Jack saw the tension between Nick and Phyllis. Phyllis made up an excuse to get out of lunch and leave. Nick went after Phyllis. Phyllis told him this wasn’t going to work.

Tessa: Hey, how are you?

Mariah: You’re running. What’s wrong? Is somebody chasing you, or…?

Noah: [ Chuckles ] I started jogging in London.

*************

Phyllis: Well, Milan was fun.

Nick: Milan was fun. Kyle and Summer’s wedding was a blast. Then we got to Tuscany, and my sister’s wedding, not so much. There was a lot going on with my family. Um…I took that out on you. I let my family get to me, and i wish had never let that happen.

Phyllis: I appreciate that. Thanks. But I thought we were having what you called a hard-core conversation right now.

Nick: We are.

Phyllis: Oh, well, not — not really. I mean, let’s really be honest, ’cause things have not been great between us —mean brittle, they’ve been brittle — for a while now. And we’ve been really out of sync.

Nick: When do you think that happened?

Phyllis: I can’t really pinpoint it, but my guess is around the time I went after Sally and Tara because of what they did to Summer. And all you did was keep on giving me warnings. That’s all you did. That’s all you said during that time.
You said, “phyllis, watch out. Phyllis, don’t do that. Phyllis –”

[ Sighs ]

Nick: But eventually, i supported your plan. I just was concerned that you were gonna go overboard.

Phyllis: Really? ‘Cause that’s kind of something I do. I go overboard. You know, it’s in my DNA. It’s who I am. And you telling me not to do that, I just — I don’t get it.

Chloe: [ Laughing ] Wait. Who do you think is having more fun at the swings — my mom or miles?

Kevin: Definitely Esther. I mean, look at that smile! Hey, buddy.

Chloe: Well, I’m glad that the kids have their grandma because we are definitely off the list of Aunt Lauren’s favorite things.

Kevin: What are you talking about? She adores Bella and Miles.

Chloe: She hasn’t liked any of the photos that I’ve posted of the kids in their Halloween costumes, and normally she is the first one to react, with kissy faces and emojis. And — nope, nothing, nada.

Kevin: Maybe she’s busy.

Chloe: Or she’s still royally pissed off that I let Sally go to Tuscany and swap out Victoria’s wedding dress.

Kevin: And you have deduced all that because she hasn’t liked your photos?

Chloe: Of her niece and nephew in the cutest outfits ever?

Kevin: I think you’re reading way too much into this.

********************

Sally: Adam. Glad you’re here.

Adam: Uh, has ChanceCom joined the list of media companies that’s very eager for a scoop on the future of Newman Fashions?

Sally: Unfortunately, no. Just trying to dig up some dirt on you. Is that about right?

Billy: That is 100% correct.

Adam: Oh. Harassing my employees. I think this actually is a new low for you, Billy.

[ Sniffs ] What is that I smell? It’s the sad stench of desperation..

Amanda: No word from abby?

Devon: Nope. Not even a text.

Amanda: Well, it’s understandable, you know, given everything that she’s going through. Not knowing if her husband is dead or alive, it must be torture.

Devon: I’m just glad that she hasn’t lost hope yet, ’cause if worst comes to worse and chance didn’t make it, I’m legitimately worried about what this is gonna do to abby.

[ Knock on door ]

Victor: Hello? Abby? Hello? Sweetheart, what are you doing there? Huh?

Abby: Do you have any news? Did they find chance?

Victor: No. Not yet. I just came to check up on you. Why is the door unlocked?

Abby: I don’t know how that happened. I was just trying to do some relaxation exercises.

Victor: Well, sit down. When is the last time you ate something or slept?

Abby: Dad, I don’t know. I’m a new mom. I’m always hungry and tired.

Victor: Sweetheart, you need to keep up your strength, okay?

Abby: Dad, what I really need right now is information, and i can’t find anythinG. I need to know what happened to chance.

Victor: Why don’t you go to the kitchen right now and make yourself some hot tea and some toast?

Abby: I’m fine.

Victor: No, sweetheart, you need strength right now. Please do as I say, and next time, keep the door locked.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: So I texted abby earlier just to let her know that we were thinking about her. Thought I’d get something back, maybe a text, but, no, nothing.

Tessa: Well, let’s operate under “no news is good news” in this scenario.

Mariah: I don’t know if I can do that, because any lack of information is — it’s just gonna stress abby out more.

Tessa: I just wish that someone would tell abby that chance is okay and that he’s coming home.

Mariah: But what if christine said is true? What if chance is gone?

Tessa: That would be absolutely devastating for abby.

Mariah: Not just for abby. I’m thinking about somebody else. Poor little bowie.

Nick: I got all your favorites — eggs, bacon, strawberries, yogurt, some oj, freshly squeezed, of course.

Phyllis: So you’re hoping that I forget about our argument because you got yogurt and fruit?

Nick: Look, I’m not trying to use romance to dodge our issues, alright? This is just a small gesture on my part to say to you, “let’s work this out.” I’m not looking for a quick fix. I know it’s gonna take some time. So if we can just sit down and share a meal and get comfortable, then we can have that talk — you know, the real-deal talk, the nitty-gritty, no-holds-barred, because that’s what it’s gonna take, phyllis, for us to get past this.

Phyllis: Alright, I’ll give it a try. Oh, man that is wrinkly.

Nick: I mean, this feels like a year ago, doing the exact same thing. We were holed up in this room, dissecting our relationship, wondering where we were headed, if anywhere.

Phyllis: Are we just going backwards and going in circles?

Nick: No, I — I think even the strongest of relationships needs to be examined from time to time, right?

Phyllis: Yeah, I suppose.

Nick: Phyllis, I don’t regret for one second the last year and a half of this.

Phyllis: I don’t either. I don’t either. But…

Nick: But what?

Phyllis: But we’re doing well.

[ Sighs ] Something is off, and I don’t know what it is, and, you know, it’s like we’re going backwards.

Nick: You really think that?

Phyllis: Yeah, don’t you? I mean, I want to get to where it was good. I want to be there again. How do we get there? I mean, do you want to try, at least?

Nick: Of course I do. Don’t you?

Phyllis: Yeah, of course i do. I mean, where do we start?

Nick: We could start with an apology.

Phyllis: Okay, well, I don’t have anything to apologize for.

Nick: Yeah, I — I get that. I’m, of course, talking about me. I’m sorry.

Mariah: If bowie loses his dad before he even gets the chance to meet him, that would be too cruel.

Tessa: Please, don’t go down that road. We should follow abby’s lead and stay positive. She’s certain that someone just made a mistake and that he’s coming home to her, so we should share that mind-set.

Mariah: But abby is so fervent in her belief that chance is still alive that it’s running her to the ragged edge, and it’s having an effect on bowie’s emotional state. I can tell.

Tessa: I’m worried.

Mariah: Yeah, we all are.

Tessa: No. About your attachment to the baby. Please don’t go overboard.

Mariah: Relax. It’s really not like that. I mean, naturally, if I’m gonna be worried for abby, my thoughts are gonna drift to the baby. And the possibility of chance being gone, I mean, it’s put a lot of things into perspective. It’s really made me appreciate the gifts that I have in my life. Like you.

Tessa: That’s very sweet.

Noah: Hey!

Mariah: Hey.

Tessa: Hey, how are you?

Mariah: You’re running. What’s wrong? Is somebody chasing you, or…?

Noah: [ Chuckles ] I started jogging in london.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Tessa: Is that abby?

Mariah: No, it’s work. Holiday promotional stuff. I need to check in.

Tessa: You’re going into the office?

Mariah: Yeah, but I will catch up with you later.

Tessa: Okay.

Mariah: Alright, I’ll see you.

Noah: See you.

Tessa: [ Sighs ]

Noah: What was that about abby?

Tessa: Oh. You haven’t heard.

Noah: What’s going on? Should I call her or…?

Tessa: Oh, no, no. Don’t bother her.

Noah: Seems like it’s weighing on you and mariah, so if you want to talk about it, I’m here.

Tessa: Thanks.

Noah: And if you’re worried about confidentiality, you can trust me.

Tessa: Well, since it affects mariah and your family, you should know. It’s about chance.

Abby: Is he still sleeping?

Victor: Yes, adorable and very peacefully, you know?

Abby: Good.

Victor: I thought ashley was here.

Abby: She was, yeah. She stayed here last night and took care of us, but I sent her home so she could get some rest.

Victor: Mm-hmm. You get something to eat?

Abby: I did, yes. Thank you. I got a sandwich, and you were right. It’s gonna help me keep up my energy while I search for chance.

Victor: Are you searching personally on this or directly?

Abby: Yes.

Victor: Oh.

Abby: I mean, I haven’t heard anything from christine since before I told you what happened. I’m not gonna just sit around here, waitinG.

Victor: I understand.

Abby: Dad, look. There was an explosion at this building in valencia, spain. I found the location from reports online. A building isn’t gonna just explode without someone noticing. And there’s nothing on survivors or victims, but [Sighs] Dad, what little information I can find, it says that it’s the result of a gas leak.

Victor: Uh-huh.

Abby: But christine said it was because of a bomb. Look, I don’t care how it happened, I just — I need proof that my husband is alive.

Victor: I understand.

[ Sighs ] I have some news.

Abby: You do? Why didn’t you say something sooner?

Victor: Because I wanted to make sure that you had something to eat first, okay? Christine was right. This building did not explode because of a gas leak. Someone put a bomb in there after they found out that chance used that building as a safe house. And he and his colleagues were directly targeted. Nope

Abby: Chance’s undercover work was exposed. His agents were left vulnerable, but, dad, that doesn’t mean that anything happened to him. He could just be laying low, trying to protect of his team. I mean, that’s exactly what chance would do. He would be putting their safety first.

Victor: Sweetheart, his bravery has never been questioned. He is a tough, brave guy. Now, from my sources, I know that this incident, this bombing, is very high on the list of priorities for the state department. So while they’re still searching…

Abby: Searching — see, they haven’t given up.

Victor: Let me finish, my love.

[ Sighs ] Apparently, four of his colleagues that he was working with have been classified as… “killed in the line of duty.”

Abby: But, dad, chance was not on that list. He was not one of the four, and that has to mean something. I am telling you, he was not in that building. He’s probably safe somewhere, and when the coast is clear, he will come home.

Amanda: Let’s not jump to worst-case scenario. You know, chance is smart and savvy. Remember how he helped you nail colin when he was trying to steal your inheritance?

Devon: Oh, sure, I do, but i still don’t understand why he would bring a personally engraved watch on such a dangerous mission and risk blowing his cover with it.

Amanda: The watch was found in the safe house. He didn’t have it on him.

Devon: Either way, why are you gonna risk it? Why risk anything like that when you have a family to come back home to?

Amanda: You’re right.

Devon: And meanwhile, abby’s living through a nightmare.

Amanda: He has been gone a long time.

Devon: And the worst part of this now is I know that what was keeping her going was the idea of her husband coming back home. That was the light at the end of the tunnel for her, and if that’s taken away, she’s gonna need a lot of support from the people who love her.

Amanda: And she will get it, if it comes to that.

Devon: [ Scoffs ]

Nick: I apologize that things got so brittle between us in italy.

Phyllis: Well, milan was fun.

Nick: Milan was fun. Kyle and summer’s wedding was a blast. Then we got to tuscany, and my sister’s wedding, not so much. There was a lot going on with my family. Um…I took that out on you. I let my family get to me, and i wish I had never let that happen.

Nick: I never meant to make you feel like you couldn’t be who you are. I just — you know, I was nervous that summer was gonna get hurt or that you were gonna get in trouble. I was just trying to be the voice of reason.

Phyllis: Okay, you know that’s never gonna work on me.

Nick: What?

Phyllis: Reason.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] We know each other so well. Too well. There are profound differences between us.

Nick: I agree with that.

Phyllis: I mean, nick, you had to have known I was gonna go after sally and tara. After what they did to summer, you had to have known I was gonna fight back. By you telling me not to, by you telling me to stop, it just goes against who I am. I mean, it was almost hurtful.

Nick: Well, you know how much my family means to me. They’re a big part of my life. I am very involved in their lives, particularly my sister’s and my mother and sometimes even my father. I’m not proud of that, but it’s who I am.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Believe me, I know.

Nick: Well, you took issue with that in italy. Do you honestly think that was productive?

[ Sneeze ]

Phyllis: Wow, you sound mad.

Nick: Not mad.

Phyllis: You’re not, really? Seriously? Because you were mad in tuscany. Did we ever resolve that? See, that’s the thing, that’s the thing is we have these little grievances, we have these little issues that we just don’t deal with, and then something else comes along and then it turns into a big issue, and we just ignore it and fix it by, you know, hopping into bed with each other.

Nick: I mean, that’s accurate. I’m amazed that method has worked as long as it has for us.

Phyllis: Okay. Alright, well, let’s not do that anymore. If we want to make this work, we have to do things differently. Have we just been taking each other for granted for the last year and a half?

Nick: No, I, uh… I always appreciate you.

Phyllis: Well, I appreciate you. I think that you like the fun, frothy side of me, but I think there are certain parts of my personality that you are not fond of.

Nick: This conversation feels familiar.

Phyllis: Yeah, I think we had it a year ago. And we agreed that we were going to let each other be who we are and accept aspects of each other’s personality. I think we agreed.

Nick: Yes, we did.

Phyllis: Yeah, but right now, we’re arguing about not allowing either one of us to be ourselves.

Nick: I — [ Sighs ] I mean, do you have to love every single thing about the person you’re with? I think that is unreasonable. It doesn’t matter how good of a match you are, there’s gonna be something about that person that you don’t care for.

Phyllis: Okay, yeah, I know, but those are little things. We’re talking about huge chunks of our personality that we’re not fond of.

Nick: Well, it never really seemed to matter until right now.

Phyllis: You’re always gonna be close to your family, aren’t you?

Nick: Yes. We’ve talked about that many times.

Phyllis: Okay, alright. I know.

[ Sighs ]

[ Exhales sharply ] Your relationship with your family is strained now. But you’re gonna come around like you always do. You’re gonna be sitting at thanksgiving dinner, laughing with them, as if nothing ever happened. You’re never gonna change. Your family’s never gonna change. I’m never gonna change. You know who I am. I’m reckless and I’m wild and I’m brash. So this whole time, have we just been skating around and ignoring every single issue that is bringing us to this conversation right now?

Devon: Gosh, you know what? We’ve been talking so much about abby’s situation, I haven’t asked you about sutton’s trial.

Amanda: Oh, yeah. It’s coming up soon.

Devon: I know it is, and I’m not very happy that michael’s trying to pressure you into testifying against your grandfather. I don’t think it’s fair.

Amanda: Yes, it may not be, but I have made a decision. I haven’t told you about it because you’ve been so consumed with everything going on with abby.

Devon: You gonna do it?

Amanda: Yes. I’m gonna take the stand.

Noah: I can’t believe it. Poor abby. I mean, is there anything I can do to help her?

Tessa: I mean, I understand the impulse to help, but abby is certain that chance is coming back to her. So until more information comes to light, I mean, there’s not really anything we can do. And please don’t tell anyone about this, even your family. I mean, unless they bring it up first.

Noah: I got it. Wait, who else in my family knows, though?

Tessa: I know your grandfather’s trying to help, but I’m not sure how amongst anyone else knows what’s going on.

Noah: I’ll keep it to myself then.

Tessa: Thank you. I mean, we’re trying to help abby, but, you know, she asked for space. I think she thinks that it’ll help her keep a clear head.

Noah: Yeah. No, I get that. Being surrounded by people, no matter how supportive, it — it can still feel like a distraction.

Tessa: I think for abby, she feels as if she accepts the sympathy, that it’s gonna make it worse for her.

Noah: Yeah, it’s a newman trait. We don’t want to accept help from anybody until it’s forced upon us, usually by another newman. She wouldn’t want to face the fear and sadness in everyone’s eyes.

Tessa: Of course. She’s worried. I mean, who wouldn’t be?

Noah: I’m assuming, because of the baby, it must be especially hard for mariah, and not to mention, for you.

Abby: There’s so many doors and windows, fire escapes, so many different ways that chance could’ve made it out, and that’s if he was in the building.

Victor: Sweetheart, you make a very good point. Has nina been contacted?

Abby: [ Sighs ] Christine was gonna tell her. I mean, I wanted to, but christine insisted. I guess she’s, um, waiting for confirmation. There’s no need to put chance’s mother through what we’ve all been going through, especially when I know that chance is still alive.

Victor: No, I think nina ought to be informed of what’s going on. I mean, you wouldn’t want to wait here and be kept in the dark about what’s gone on.

Abby: No, you’re right.

Victor: So then, why don’t i call her?

Abby: I’ll call christine and tell her that she needs to let nina know.

Victor: Okay.

Abby: She’ll want to be the one to break the news to her best friend. Dad, we need to stay positive. We can’t give up. Chance wouldn’t want us to.

Victor: I agree with you. Okay? Come here.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Victor: You just remember, i will always be there for you, okay?

Abby: Thank you, daddy.

Victor: Okay.

Think wearing less makeup

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Devon: So you’re going to testify against your grandfather, huh?

Amanda: You sound worried.

Devon: You already know that I’m worried. I don’t need to tell you again why. I just believe that michael can win this case without putting you on the stand.

Amanda: I agree. Michael is a good lawyer. I know that he can make his case without my involvement, but i have to do this, devon. Sutton killed my father, okay? So I can’t shy away from this. I need to look across that courtroom and tell him to his face that I know what he did.

Devon: And I’m sure you’ve thought about this, obviously, a lot, so I support you, 100%. I have your back.

Amanda: Do you ever get tired of being the nicest guy on the planet?

Devon: [ Chuckles ] I mean, you should know that’s a front.

[ Both laugh ]

Amanda: Oh, really? Okay, well, then if that’s true, then I guess I am a horrible judge of character.

Devon: No. I mean [Chuckles] I’m no saint at all. I’m angry at someone right now, and I know that it’s not justified.

Amanda: Who?

Devon: Chance. He’s put abby through hell. And I know it’s not fair of me to say that, and I hope and pray that he is safe and he comes home, but if he does, I’m certainly gonna let him know how I feel.

Amanda: Well, I really hope you get that opportunity.

Devon: Yeah, I hope so, too.

Amanda: You’re a really good man, devon hamilton.

Devon: I try to be.

Amanda: I can tell that you’re still worried. So why don’t you go? Okay? Go and make sure that abby and the baby are okay.

Victor: Don’t you cry. Everything will be alright. Okay. Yes. Yes.

Abby: [ Gasps ]

Victor: It’ll be alright.

Abby: [ Exhales sharply ]

[ Sniffles ]

Victor: Oh, sweetheart, don’t you cry.

Abby: I shouldn’t be around the baby like this.

Mariah: Abby? A-abby? Why was abby running out like that?

Victor: She’s just very upset right now.

Mariah: Is there any news about chance?

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ] I don’t have time to explain, okay? Would you take the baby while i run after her?

Mariah: Yeah, of course.

Victor: Thank you so much. Appreciate it. There we go. There we go. There we go. Okay, thank you.

Mariah: Of course.

Nick: [ Sighs ] I think we’re being honest with each other. You know, we’re not fooling ourselves. Yes, we have issues. But I’m trying like hell to see things from your vantage point.

Phyllis: Yeah, I know you are. I appreciate that. I want you to know I’m checking myself. I’m not trying to self-sabotage. You know, I’m not trying to destroy this relationship. I want us to work.

Nick: Well, I think it says a lot that we’re, you know, trying to figure out where we are and how we got here. ‘Cause, despite our differences, you know, we mesh. It’s a push-pull relationship, and right now, we’re focusing more on the push than the pull, and the pull is that we love each other.

Phyllis: I’m looking at the big picture, you know? Usually, I can outweigh the good with the bad, but lately…

Nick: I think the one thing that truly matters is that we love each other and that we’re happy.

Phyllis: Are you happy? I mean, truly happy?

Nick: I mean, the fact that you’re even asking me that implies that you’re not. Are you?

Phyllis: I’m not happy. It hurts to say that. I’m not happy right now. Right now I’m not happy. And I think if you were honest with yourself, you’d say the same thing. I brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein.

Nick: Don’t put words in my mouth, okay? I truly respect your feelings. I want you to respect mine, and don’t make me feel like I’m not being honest.

Phyllis: I wasn’t saying that. I wasn’t saying that you aren’t being honest with me or yourself.

Nick: Well, that’s the way it sounded, and if that’s not the case, then you make it sound like I’m not smart enough to understand what I’m truly feeling.

Phyllis: No, I didn’T. That’s not what I’m saying at all.

Nick: [ Sighs ] We’re in a rough patch right now. There’s been miscommunications and mistakes made, but the only thing that matters is us. What we have is amazing, alright? We are a lot more than video games and hot sex.

Phyllis: Of course we are.

Nick: Well, some people say that what we have is easy and comfortable, and I disagree with that.

Phyllis: Well, who said that?

Nick: [ Sighs ] You know what? It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter.

Phyllis: Yes, it does. Have you been talking about our relationship with somebody?

Nick: Who cares what other people think, alright? What we need to do is focus on us and making this work. Can we do that?

Phyllis: Yes, yes. But you’re the one who brought it up. You said that somebody said that we’re hot sex and video games. I’ve never heard anybody say that at all, by the way.

Nick: Forget I mentioned it.

Phyllis: No, I’m not gonna forget that you mentioned it. Who — who are you going to for advice about our relationship?

Nick: Look, I don’t need other people’s opinions. They’re not helping. Especially when they’re coming from someone like jack who’s off waiting in the wings for you.

[ Door opens ]

Mariah: Hello?

Devon: Hey.

Mariah: Hey.

Devon: Hey, what’s going on?

Mariah: Oh. Abby ran out of here and victor chased after her. They left me in charge of the baby.

Devon: Why did abby leave?

Mariah: I don’t know, but she seemed very emotional. Did you come to check on her?

Devon: Yeah, yeah, I did. Just wish there was something i could do.

Mariah: Me, too. I went to work for a little bit. I put out a small fire there, but then I felt compelled to come back here.

Devon: I think until we know something concrete about chance, we just have to hope for the best and prepare for —

Mariah: I know what we have to prepare for.

Devon: Yeah, I know you do. I’m just saying it ’cause it’s gonna take all of our support to help get abby through this.

Mariah: Yeah. We need to be here for abby as much as we possibly can. And for this precious little guy right here.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Chance. I’m gonna hold on to those promises you made the day that you proposed. And that is how I know that you can’t be gone. You would never break your word.

[ Sniffles ]

[ Exhales sharply ]

[ Breathes shakily ]

[ Sniffles ]

Victor: Hi, sweetheart. Come here.

Abby: I’m sorry.

Victor: Nothing to be sorry for, okay?

Abby: I’m sitting here in the park talking to myself, blubbering like a fool. It’s not my proudest moment.

Victor: It’s okay, okay? You’re feeling very emotional right now. It’s alright to feel that way. It’s alright to let it all out, okay?

Abby: I can’t do it in front of dominic. I mean, he’s so sensitive to my emotional state. That’s why I just — I had to leave.

[ Sighs ]

Victor: All I can tell you is that he will be alright. He’s a strong boy. He’ll be alright.

Abby: Dad, I know that chance is alive. I can feel it in my heart. So I don’t know why I’m falling apart like this, why I am such a mess.

Victor: You’re very upset right now, rightfully so. To live with that uncertainty about what happened to your loved one, I mean, that’s very understandable, alright? You just know that I’ll always be here for you. You can always lean on me. You can always come to me, okay? Come here.

Devon: Hey, mariah, you know that if you need to go to work and take care of things, I can stay here with dominic.

Mariah: No, I wouldn’t be able to focus on anything at work anyways, and I feel like i need to be here, you know, in case something happens. Kind of feels like a part of the pact we made when I first became the surrogate, you know? Have each other’s backs.

Devon: Yeah, I know. I know. So do I. And if bad news is on its way, i want to be here for abby.

Mariah: Yeah, me, too.

[ Knock on door ] Abby?

Devon: I don’t think she’d knock. Hey.

Christine: Hey. Is abby home?

Devon: No, she took off. Do you have any news? Frequent heartburn? Not anymore.

Phyllis: Wait a second. Our issues have nothing to do with jack. Nothing. Jack is just a friend to me.

Nick: This isn’t about friendship. I mean, he declared that he’s still in love with you to both of us.

Phyllis: Oh, who cares? Who cares? He was just being honest. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t want the best for us.

Nick: It also doesn’t mean that you need to go running off to jack every time you got a problem.

Phyllis: Oh, my god, that’s not what I’m doing. I just go to jack for he– jack has been a friend, and he has helped me.

Nick: Right. Because he knows you so much better than I do.

Phyllis: Okay, you know what? You know what? We’re getting off topic here. This conversation is supposed to be about us.

Nick: Yeah. That’s what we’re doing, right?

Phyllis: Yeah, but all of a sudden, we’re talking about jack or somebody else that is whispering in your ear about our relationship. That is doing more harm than good. This is about us and nobody else.

Nick: Okay. Well, I need to know, are we together in this or not?

Abby: Thank you for everything.

Victor: You just remember, you’re strong enough to handle this on your own. And if you ever need anyone, you call me, and I’ll be right here, okay? Remember, you have a lot of people who love you. In fact, I see two of them right there.

Abby: [ Chuckles ] Hey, guys.

Devon: Hey.

Abby: Hi, christine.

Christine: Hi, abby.

Abby: Look, I don’t want to be coddled, so, um, just tell me. Why are you here?

Christine: This was delivered to the agency’s field office today. I…I requested that I be the one to bring it to you. It was found at the site of the explosion.

[ Sighs ] Is this chance’s wedding ring?

Victor: Christine, um, that doesn’t mean that that is his ring. He wouldn’t wear that while doing undercover work.

Christine: I thought that, too, victor, but it turns out he left it on. He adapted it as part of his cover story as a married businessman. Evidently, chance didn’t ever want to take off his ring.

Abby: [ Sniffles ]

Christine: Is this chance’s?

Abby: [ Sighs ] It can’t be.

[ Exhales sharply ]

[ Sniffles ]

[ Sighs ]

Next week on

“the young and the restless”…

Jack: I feel for nicholas these days. Clearly under a lot of pressure. He’s not getting along with victoria or adam or victor.

Nikki: Or phyllis, apparently. How much do you know about the tension between them?

Nina: [ Gasps ] Until this very moment, it didn’t seem real.

[ Sobbing ]

Billy: What the hell?

Gaines: I had nowhere else to go. I’m not safe. Can you hide me?

Sharon: Oh, you know what? My pastry delivery is late this morning, so it’s slim pickings.

Elena: Oh, no. I guess I will have to figure out a way to carry on.

Noah: Dig deep. Find that strength.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] I will. I will figure out my breakfast plan. It was good seeing you both. I’ll talk to you later.

*************

Noah: You are determined to get this story out of me, aren’t you?

Sharon: Well, not if you really don’t want to talk about it. But you already sort of admitted between the lines that there was a problem back in London. Your dad and I just want to know what’s going on. You never complained of being unhappy, and this sudden decision to come back to Genoa City is a little jarring. Though we’re thrilled to have you here as long as you want stay.

Noah: Okay. I — I was in a relationship. It was kind of a serious one — for me, at least. And…I just — I ended up getting my heart broken.

Sharon: I’m sorry.

Noah: Yeah. Me too. I promise everything’s gonna be okay. I hope you understand why I’d like to just leave at that and not go on a deep dive into my love life with my mom.

Abby: It feels like christine’s been on the phone for hours.

Devon: Well, that’s a good thing, though, right? That means she’s been able to get a hold of more of her contacts.

Abby: Yeah, I mean, hopefully she’s getting some information about where chance was when that bomb hit the building. I mean, he — he could have been anywhere.

Mariah: I mean, it’s true, you know? The first reports from the news about, you know, a big event — it’s always confusing and conflicting.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Tessa: Yeah, and chance was on a covert mission, flying under the radar. That adds an entire layer of uncertainty.

Abby: Right? I mean, we don’t even know if he was staying in that building. I mean, that could have just been a fake address to go along with the fake identity.

Ashley: Honey, here. I made you a smoothie.

Abby: Oh, mom, I don’t have an appetit right now.

Ashley: I want you to take care of yourself, honey, please.

Devon: Abby, come on. You really do need to, okay? Being stressed can make you dehydrated, and you won’t even realize it. And we have no idea how long christine’s gonna take to get us information, so, please, you need to stay strong.

Abby: Yeah. You’re right.

Ashley: Okay, I’m gonna put it here, alright? And when you’re ready, okay?

Abby: Thank you, mom. I will drink it. I promise.

Ashley: Okay.

Abby: Hi. Any developments?

Christine: Well, one of my contacts was able to send me some photos from the scene of the explosion. And I’ve been going through them, and [Sighs] Abby, there is one that I need you to take a look at to get a positive identification.

Abby: Alright. Oh, my god.

[ Crying ] Oh, my god.

[ Sniffles ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Chloe: Or she’s still royally pissed off that I let sally go to tuscany and swap out victoria’s wedding dre.

Kevin: And you have deduced all that because she hasn’t liked your photos?

Chloe: Of her niece and nephew in the cutest outfits ever?

Kevin: I think you’re reading way too much into this.

Chloe: [ Sighs ] You know what? You’re right. You’re right. If — if I just want to see where she stands, you know, I just, um — I’ll use the tried-and-true old-fashioned way.

Kevin: Which is?

Chloe: Well, I’ll just go see her in person and see how she feels about the whole situation.

Kevin: Uh, that’s not a good idea.

Chloe: Why not?

Kevin: Because you already did the whole face-to-face thing and apologized.

Chloe: Yeah, and it didn’t take.

Kevin: Here’s what you do — give her some time and space. Otherwise, you run the risk of riling her up again.

Chloe: You know what? You’re right. Oh, gosh, you’re right again. Um, so, I’ll just — I’ll give her her space, and she’ll get over it eventually.

Kevin: Yeah, of course. I mean, unless sally has any other tricks up her sleeve. Does she?

Chloe: I mean, how — how should I know? She’s so unpredictable, and her dress was a huge hit in italy. The eyes of the fashion world are all on her now.

Kevin: Maybe that’ll keep her busy and out of trouble.

Chloe: Well, sally is thrilled about her success, as she should be, but that could make her over-confident and inspire her to take more risks, hoping for the same result. Plus, she is super grateful to adam for being in her corner.

Kevin: Oh, great.

Chloe: Yeah, which only means that there is no way in the world she will listen to our warnings to stay away from him.

Billy: You know, if you’ve gotten so many warnings about adam, why risk working for him, let alone dating the guy?

Sally: We’re not actually dating.

Billy: But you went to tuscany together for victoria’s wedding.

Sally: Adam took me to italy so I could show victoria the dress that I designed for her.

Billy: Oh, I see. So, you’re using him to further your career. That makes a lot of sense.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Wow. Who hurt you? You’re so cynical.

Billy: If I am, it’s only because adam showed me just how low a human being can sink.

Sally: Well, that is not the adam that I know. I like and respect him, and you can put that quote on record.

Billy: Okay, well, I will file that under “famous last words.” You know, I will give it to him. He is smooth. He is charming. But that only makes him more dangerous. So, whoever this person is that warned you to keep your distance, they have your best interests at heart.

Adam: Sally.

Sally: Adam. Glad you’re here.

Adam: Uh, has chanccomm joined the list of media companies that’s very eager for a scoop on the future of newman fashions?

Sally: Unfortunately, no. Just trying to dig up some dirt on you. Is that about right?

Billy: That is 100% correct.

Adam: Oh. Harassing my employees. I think this actually is a new low for you, billy.

[ Sniffs ] What is that I smell? It’s the sad stench of desperation. (Vo) for over 50 years

Ashley: Honey, what’s in the picture?

Abby: It’s, um… it’s chance’s watch. It’s a family heirloom that

[Sniffles] Nina gave him right before our wedding.

Christine: Partially buried in the rubble of the explosion.

Mariah: Oh, abby, I’m so sorry.

Abby: No. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Um… I’m sorry for reacting this way because, now that I’m thinking about this, I mean, I think this is a good sign.

Christine: Why would you think that?

Abby: Well, I mean, this watch — [Sniffles] It’s engraved. I mean, it says “phillip chancellor” on it. He wouldn’t be wearing it if he was working undercover, so that’s got to mean he wasn’t in the building when the bomb went off, right?

Ashley: It’s a possibility.

Mariah: He could be in hiding somewhere.

Ashley: Yeah, he could be.

Tessa: Laying low until it’s safe.

Mariah: He could not even be in town and, you know…

Ashley: Yes.

Mariah: …Not even know that the explosion happened.

Abby: What do you think, devon?

Devon: I mean, I think that anything I would say would just be a guess, like the rest of us, until we have something more concrete. Is there anything else in the picture to go off of, christine?

Christine: You know, the building was leveled, so it’s just gonna take some time before we’re sure of what happened.

Abby: Unless he calls or he comes home.

Christine: Right. Unless that happens.

Ashley: Just keep praying.

Billy: You know, sally, my investigation isn’t the only reason why I wanted to talk to you.

Sally: Really? Why else could you want to talk to me? Unless you’re in need of a wedding dress?

Billy: No. I wanted to give you a little warning about what to expect from your new employer — lies, manipulation, deception, treachery. Am I missing anything?

Adam: No, I think you hit all the major bullet points, since you roll out this speech every chance you get.

Billy: Believe me, adam, I am sick of saying it just as much as you are of hearing it. It’s just crazy to me how you keep pulling victims into your web.

Sally: I am nobody’s victim.

Adam: How are things going at chanccomm these days? I mean, I don’t know if you’re the right person to ask since you are barely there.

Billy: Oh, do you have your little minions following me around now?

Adam: Oh, I don’t need to because you spend half of your time following me around, feeding your obsession, not doing any actual work, which I’m sure lily doesn’t appreciate.

Billy: Yeah, well, my job description is following you around. I mean, this guy has been a constant source of scandal and depravity you for years. And I don’t see that changing, as much as you try to convince everyone you’ve turned over a new leaf.

Sally: Well, then I guess we’re just gonna have to get used to you lurking in the background and hiding behind potted plants. It’s not really what i envisioned of ceo behavior, but, you know, to each his own.

Billy: Well, job number one of a ceo is to decimate the competition. Isn’t that right?

Adam: Well, on that point, we are in total agreement.

Lily: Hi. Hello.

Sharon: Hey, lily. What can I get you?

Lily: Um, the strongest coffee that you have brewing, please.

Sharon: Still recovering from jet lag.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Sharon: Noah and tessa sent home the most beautiful photos of the wedding in tuscany.

Lily: Yeah, and the photos can’t even do it justice. I mean, the palazzo was exquisite. The ceremony was so romantic. It was beautiful.

Sharon: You don’t say.

Lily: Oh. That doesn’t look good.

Sharon: Lily, you have got to rein billy in, persuade him to leave adam alone once and for all.

Chloe: Ah.

Kevin: Notification from lauren that she loves your photos and therefore forgives you?

Chloe: I wish. No — e-mail from another chain of bridal boutiques wanting to get their hands on victoria’s dress and asking to see what sally’s working on.

Kevin: Hey, way to catapult newman fashion into the stratosphere.

Chloe: I got to hand it to sally. You know, she really took a giant risk, and it paid off. You just can’t buy this kind of publicity.

Kevin: Yeah. How you gonna capitalize on it?

Chloe: Well, I mean, sally could focus on the bridal industry. I mean, maybe, but — I don’t know — I mean, she could just go in so many different directions. I’ve seen a lot of her past work, and she has so much range. And then when chelsea comes back, I am going to have the two most incredible designers working together. I — I predict the whole thing is gonna blow up. In a good way.

Kevin: I — I hate to point this out, but it could also blow up in a — in a bad way. You’re talking about two very, very big personalities.

Chloe: True, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t get along.

Kevin: But we can’t ignore the fact that sally apparently has a thing for adam, right? And to say that chelsea is possessive of adam is an understatement. How do you not see this as a recipe for disaster?

Chloe: Come on. It’s all gonna work out.

Kevin: Oh, yeah? You got some super powers i don’t know about?

Chloe: Yes, I do, actually. Wrangling emotional creatives is totally in my skill set.

Kevin: Yes, but — but adding adam to the mix makes this way more complicated than just dealing with sensitive personalities.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Kevin: Come on.

Chloe: I am at my best when I bring out the best in other people. It’s gonna be great. For all of us. It is.

Kevin: Okay.

Billy: You know, I will say congratulations. Somehow, some way, you are still able to convince women that you are a poor, misunderstood soul. I mean, at a certain point, they figure it out. Look what happened to chelsea. You do know what happened to chelsea, right?

Adam: Just ignore him.

Sally: You know, I don’t know what you expect. Is this supposed to be where i thank you for the cautionary tales? ‘Cause it’s not about to happen. I’m perfectly capable of looking out for myself.

Billy: Yeah. That’s what I’ve heard about you.

Sally: I’m sure you have heard about my past mistakes, and so has adam. I am guessing he’s been warned about me just as much as I’ve been warned about him, but we are rebuilding our lives, and we are doing that without judging each other.

Billy: Well, from where i sit, it only makes sense that you would avoid anyone with a rap sheet as long as his.

Adam: You know, it’s funny that you tell people to stay away from me, but you can’t take your own advice. You’re the one who can’t get over this.

Lily: I don’t really see a problem. I mean, they seem calm enough. Plus, I mean, I’m not responsible for what billy does. And I’d be surprised if adam asked you to intervene on his behalf. Did he?

Sharon: Uh, new pot’s almost ready. I, uh, didn’t see you come in. How long have you been here?

Rey: Yeah. You were occupied.

Billy: Hello, gorgeous.

Lily: Hey.

Billy: Can I buy you a cup of coffee?

Lily: Yes, please.

Billy: Sharon, do you mind if we get two cups of coffee to go, please?

Sharon: Coming right up.

Lily: So, uh, what was that happened with adam?

Billy: Nothing worth repeating.

Ashley: Abby? Honey?

Abby: Mom, I’m fine. It’s fine. I mean, I don’t know why you guys all look like the world is ending. Uh, thank you, christine, for showing me that picture because now that I have had time to process it, I know exactly what happened.

Mariah: You do?

Abby: Yeah. I mean, chance must have — have left the watch behind while he was working. I mean, he probably wasn’t even in the building when the bomb went off.

Christine: It just doesn’t explain why there haven’t been any sightings of him.

Abby: It’s probably just like mariah and tessa said. I mean, maybe he’s hiding. Maybe he’s — he’s somewhere and he feels like he can’t contact us because he doesn’t feel safe, like he can’t trust anyone.

Mariah: Anything is possible. We can’t rule it out.

Abby: Exactly. So, christine, please call whoever you can. Call any contact that you have. Learn everything about this, please.

Christine: I’ll see what i can do.

Mariah: Abby, is there anything we can do for you?

Abby: [ Sniffles ] Actually, yeah, there is. We can all hope and trust that chance is gonna come home. I mean, the odds have been stacked against him before. I mean, he has survived the impossible. Chance never gives up. He doesn’t give up on us, and he would never give up on himself. And so we cannot give up on him.

Mariah: No, of course we won’T.

Abby: Tessa, I mean, when mariah went missing, did you just throw in the towel?

Tessa: Never.

Abby: No. And neither did we. And the longer the weeks went on and the more worried we got, we never gave up looking for you.

[ Sniffles ] We knew we would see you again because we know who you are. You are a survivor. You are a bad-ass, and we would never give up faith, would we?

Devon: No, we didn’T.

Abby: And you made it home, you and the baby, safe and sound. I know that chance was not in that building. I know it. I can feel it. He is gonna come home to me and to dominic. We just — we have to keep believing that. What’s the #1 retinol brand

Sally: What was billy talking about?

Adam: Hmm?

Sally: Who’s jesse gaines?

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sally: He was in tuscany and now he’s missing?

Adam: He’s just — he’s posturing again. And thank you for defending me, by the way.

Sally: Yeah, well, I’m not sure if what I said really made much of a difference, but…

Adam: Maybe not to billy. But it makes a difference to me.

Sally: Yeah, well, don’t read too much into it. I just was treating you the way I wanted to be treated, basing my opinions on who you are, not who you used to be.

Adam: Well, I appreciate it. And that’s actually why I came by here. I wanted to apologize for, um, being abrupt earlier.

Sally: Thank you. Billy seems like he’s on a real mission to bring you down. And not just you, but all of newman media. He’s talking about decimating the competition. He sounded serious.

Adam: Trust me. He is not a threat to newman.

Slly: I might buy that if you did. But you’re clearly concerned. You were — you acted like you were totally on board with this whole no-holds-barred business strategy. How concerned should I be that newman fashion is gonna get caught in the crossfire?

Adam: Not at all. You’re fine.

Sally: [ Scoffs ]

Sharon: How was your day?

Rey: Thank you. Oh, you know, I had a nice chat with noah. I came over here to tell you all about it.

Sharon: Oh. What did you two talk about?

Rey: First I’d like to hear about your conversation with lily.

Sharon: Oh, I guess you heard the tail end of that.

[ Sighs ] Billy can be so infuriating. You know, I just get so exasperated with him sometimes.

Rey: Hmm. Sounded more like it had to do with your feelings about adam.

Abby: Maybe I should have gone with christine. That way, I could hear the news as soon as it comes in.

Ashley: I don’t think that’s a good idea, honey. She’s gonna be dealing with so much misinformation. You don’t want your hopes to rise and fall on every single rumor.

Mariah: That’s right. I mean, you should wait until christine has some more confirmed facts.

Ashley: Yeah. Would you girls mind going into the kitchen and maybe — I don’t know — making some snacks or something?

Mariah: Yeah, sure. Of course.

Ashley: Thank you.

Mariah: Come on.

Abby: Eating is the last thing on my mind right now.

Ashley: I just wanted to help them — I don’t know — find something to do.

Abby: Well, what would really be helpful is that if everyone would just go home and stop staring at me while I slowly lose my mind.

Ashley: Honey, listen, we’re not gonna let you go through this alone.

Devon: Did I miss anything?

Abby: Well, I was just telling my mom that nothing that anyone does right now is gonna help the situation. The only thing that’s gonna help is hearing chance’s voice again. So I don’t care how many pictures someone shoves in my face, and I’m not gonna take the word of some stranger from the state department.

[ Dominic cries ] Baby, baby, it’s okay. It’s okay. Okay. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Mommy’s here.

[ Voice breaking ] Mommy’s here. It’s okay. It’s okay.

[ Inhales deeply ] Shh.

[ Breathes deeply ] Shh.

Billy: I don’t know. I guess jesse gaines has turned into an invisible man. We got our best investigative journalists trying to find him, and nothing. It’s like the guy’s disappeared into thin air.

Lily: And there’s no activity on his passport?

Billy: No one by his name has left italy by train, plane, or rental car.

Lily: Well, I mean, if he thought someone was trailing him, maybe he’d use a pseudonym. Or maybe he bought a car with the money that you gave him.

Billy: Or maybe he’s still in tuscany hiding out. Or maybe he’s six feet under. Reformed, okay? He is not a better person because he has got one less kidney.

Lily: No, I’m just saying that there is a range between angel and cold-blooded killer.

Billy: Right, he’s just misunderstood.

Lily: Why do you always think the worst of him? Remember when you thought that he poisoned rey, right? And he had been framed.

Billy: Okay. Adam and victor are coming after chanccomm. That we know is true.

Lily: Okay. So, what’s our game plan?

Billy: We find jesse gaines, dead or alive. He’s our best weapon. You have always loved vicks vapors.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Lily: Look, if something did happen to gaines, our goal would be to prove that adam is responsible.

Billy: And a bonus to that — it would decimate newman media.

Lily: Please tell me that’s not the scenario that you’re hoping for.

Billy: Oh, no. Best-case scenario would be finding gaines alive. Then we get his full cooperation. That way, we would have the evidence to prove not only ashland’s crimes, but that adam and victorere complicit I mean, clearly something has happened to change that, and we don’t know what. I mean, maybe he got a bigger payoff. You know, that kind of money can make a man disappear.

Billy: Mm.

Lily: But, I mean, even if we do find him, he might not want to talk to us. So we have to find something more reliable than gaines to fend off an attack from newman media.

Billy: Got any ideas?

Lily: Actually, as a matter of fact, I do.

Sharon: Okay, sorry about that. I just wanted to make sure adam and sally had left.

Rey: Mm. Now that the coast is clear?

Sharon: I want you to know i would be just as annoyed with billy if he were attacking someone other than adam. He’s stirring things up again. And the accusations he’s making are way out in left field.

Rey: How do you know what he’s claiming?

Sharon: Well, I ran into billy in the park, and i overheard part of his phone conversation.

Rey: After I told you it would be better if you didn’t get involved.

Sharon: Well, actually, yes.

Rey: [ Scoffs ]

Chloe: [ Chuckling ] Did you have so much fun with grandma? I bet you need a nap and a snack.

Kevin: Oh, that makes two of us, kiddo.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ]

Kevin: Hey.

Sally: Hi. Look at this handsome little guy.

Kevin: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: Was that a yawn I see?

Kevin: Yeah. He had a very long morning with his grandma. They fed the ducks. They were on the swings. He’s basically living his best life.

Sally: Lucky kid.

Kevin: Actually, I hear you’re the one with all the luck these days. Congratulations on your show-stopping wedding gown.

Sally: Thank you.

Chloe: No, that’s not luck. I mean, come on. That’s — that’s a lot of talent and a whole lot of nerve.

Kevin: [ Chuckles ] Well, with a recipe like that, anything can happen. Alright, I’m gonna go grab some coffee before I head back to work. I love you, buddy.

Chloe: Say bye to daddy.

Kevin: I’ll see you guys later.

Chloe: Bye. So, how does it feel to be the most popular designer around?

Sally: Like a dream. I have been getting calls and texts and e-mails from fashion magazines and websites, department stores, and boutiques about my designs. Everyone but fenmore’S.

Chloe: Imagine that.

Sally: Where do things stand between you and lauren?

Chloe: Well, we haven’t made up completely, but it’ll happen.

Sally: Okay. Well, I’m glad to hear it because we may have another problem on our hands.

Abby: Shh, shh, it’s okay, dominic. It’s okay. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. It’s alright. Mommy’s here.

Mariah: Hey. Is dominic alright?

Abby: Nothing I do seems to be working.

Mariah: Maybe I can help?

Ashley: Would you mind warming up a bottle?

Mariah: Yeah, yeah, of course.

Ashley: Thank you.

Mariah: I’ll be right back.

Ashley: Thank you.

Abby: I feel like dominic can sense that I’m upset and it’s making him upset.

Devon: Well, hey, do you want me to take him for a minute?

Abby: Yeah. Would you?

Devon: Of course. Of course. Come here.

Abby: You got him?

Devon: Yeah. There you go, buddy.

Abby: There you go.

Devon: There you go. You’ll get your bottle, you’ll be feeling much better.

[ Crying subsides ]

Ashley: You really are a baby whisperer, aren’t you?

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Abby: Well, it’s a good thing because I can’t even do the simplest things right. I can’t help chance. I can’t give my baby what he needs.

Ashley: Honey.

Devon: Come on.

Ashley: The baby’s fine.

Abby: You know what? I think I just, um — I need some air.

Ashley: Okay. Want me to go with you?

Abby: No, no. I just need to be by myself. Thank you. Um…can you make sure dominic is okay?

Ashley: Yeah, if you’re sure.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Abby: Yeah.

Ashley: Oh, my god. My poor sweet girl. I wish there was something i could do. I mean, this is so unfair.

Devon: Yeah. It’s okay.

Ashley: Oh, baby.

Devon: It’s alright.

Sharon: Billy was on the phone in a public place. It’s not like I tracked him down and was eavesdropping on purpose. But then I heard him talking about adam, and that’s when i realized that’s why he came to you with his accusations — because he knows that you’ve had personal problems with adam in the past.

Rey: Well, that’s a nice way to put it.

Sharon: And he was manipulating you. He was trying to take advantage of that.

Rey: No. I didn’t get sucked in. But apparently you couldn’t resist, which is why I didn’t want you to get involved — because I knew this is exactly how you would react.

Sharon: Well, this is a perfectly normal, natural reaction. Billy is spreading ugly rumors again. You know, he doesn’t even know if a crime has been committed or not, but he can’t wait to pin it all on adam.

Rey: Billy’s only asking questions at this point, and they do not seem unreasonable. Adam’s got a pretty nasty track record.

Sharon: Well, he’s changed.

Rey: It wasn’t that long ago that he kidnapped chelsea.

Sharon: That was a low point for him, but, you know, he’s come a long way since then.

Rey: Okay. Sharon, the sacrifices —

Sharon: Even nick has noticed the changes in him. He sees how hard adam’s trying. And billy has admitted to me that he’s never gonna get over what happened with delia. Every time he sees adam, he sees a monster.

Rey: Yeah. What do you see? A victim that always needs saving?

Sharon: No.

Rey: Okay. Then why are you getting involved? I heard what you told lily.

Sharon: Oh! Yeah, you know what? I shouldn’t have done that. I shouldn’t be telling her what to do. That really wasn’t my place. I think I just — it was an impulse.

Rey: [ Chuckles ] Oh, it’s always your impulse to protect adam. I think we both need some air.

Sharon: Okay. I love you, too.

Lily: Listen, I agree with you. We do need an ally. But we need someone more trustworthy than gaines, someone who has influence over victor and ashland. And you know that would be victoria.

Billy: Victoria?

Lily: Yes.

Billy: The one that is furious with me for bringing her groom’s blackmailer to her wedding?

Lily: Yeah. Listen, she had every right to be angry with you. But you redeemed yourself. You deleted the video that gaines sent you, and so now you’re back in her good graces.

Billy: I think you’re being a little too overly optimistic.

Lily: Why don’t you just text her? Just see what she says.

Billy: [ Laughs ] I really, uh — I don’t feel comfortable asking her for protection.

Lily: Don’t look at it like that. I mean, of course we can take on victor and adam alone. But if victoria can convince victor to stand down, then we can avoid, you know, battling over something that doesn’t need to happen.

Billy: No, I think you’re right. It is a good strategy. She’s a lot easier to find than gaines. But I am not giving up looking for him.

Lily: Fine. Don’T. But as long as we work this angle, too.

Billy: [ Exhales heavily ]

Chloe: So, what kind of trouble are we talking about?

Sally: Well, I was just at crimson lights, and adam and billy got into quite the disagreement.

Chloe: Well, that’s how they always act whenever they’re within spitting distance of each other.

Sally: Yeah, but this one sounded pretty serious.

Chloe: You know, I just wish that billy could learn how to walk away from a fight. What does this have to do with newman fashion?

Sally: Okay, there’s a possibility that I’m being paranoid. Adam said that there was nothing to worry about. I just got the impression that both of them are getting ready to go to war. And we have such big plans. We are on the verge of a huge breakout success. So, how do we make sure that the fallout from their feud doesn’t hit us?

Ashley: Look at him. So much going on around, and he’s just so peaceful.

Devon: Life is so simple when you’re this small. All you got to do is eat and sleep and just soak up all the love in the room around you.

Ashley: There’s a lot of that.

Devon: Yeah, there is. Ah. That’s it.

Ashley: [ Voice breaking ] It just breaks my heart to think that…you know, he might not ever meet chance. I know how badly chance wanted to be a daddy.

Mariah: Hey, don’t — don’t say that. Don’t even think it ’cause he can’t be gone.

Ashley: Listen, I really hope you’re right, you know?

Mariah: Should somebody go after abby and make sure she doesn’t need anything?

Ashley: I think that’s very sweet of you, but I think she just needs some time alone, okay?

[ Dominic fussing ]

Devon: Ohh.

Ashley: You really are a natural with him.

Devon: [ Chuckles ] We just like hanging out together. That’s all. [ Chuckles ] It’s okay.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Christine: Where’s abby?

Ashley: She went out to get some air. Should I go find her? Do you have news?

Christine: No, uh, nothing new, I’m afraid. Everyone’s just trying to figure out how this could have happened.

Devon: I’m sure you have an opinion.

Christine: I do.

Devon: You can be honest with us. I mean, do you really think there’s a possibility that chance made it? Johnson & johnson is building a future

Christine: If you’re looking for definitive answers, I…

Ashley: We want your opinion. Please. Could chance still be alive?

Christine: Well, here’s what we know. The explosion happened in the middle of the night, so it’s not necessarily true that chance only would have taken off his watch to go out and meet someone. He could have just been getting ready for bed. But I didn’t want to say that in front of abby.

Ashley: I understand. I appreciate your candor.

Christine: I wish I had better news.

Ashley: Thank you so much for coming here in person to tell us. I mean, it couldn’t have been easy for you.

Christine: I mean, just now I’m devastated for her, and I’ll help her get through this any way I can.

Mariah: We’ll all be here for her and dominic in every way possible.

Ashley: Thank you, mariah.

Devon: Everything’s gonna be just fine, little guy. It’s gonna be just fine.

Abby: I told everyone that i needed air, but really I just wanted to be here.

[ Sniffles ] Where you proposed to me, chance, where you — where you asked me to be yours forever.

[ Sighs ] And you said our life would be full of adventure. That we could handle anything that life threw at us. And we made so many beautiful promises that day, visions of what our life would look like. And…I believed every word. So I don’t care what everyone says, chance. I am not giving up on you. I can’T.

[ Sighs ]

[ Sniffles ] Dad, hi. It’s me. I really need your help.

[ Sighs ]

Kevin: Hey, you working on a tough case? Or is this personal and none of my business?

Rey: No. Have a seat. It’s actually the same headache you’re dealing with.

Kevin: Adam?

Rey: You know, the man’s like a chronic disease. Once you think you got him licked and built up an immunity, he just pops up, hits you from a different angle.

Kevin: I haven’t had a good night’s sleep since chloe started working for him. I just know it’s not gonna end well.

Rey: You know, after everything she’s been through, why would she take the job?

Kevin: [ Sighs ] She did it for chelsea. She’s her friend to the end, and she wants her to have a soft place to land. Chloe’s strong enough now that she can take what she needs from him and keep her distance otherwise, but it still feels like she’s playing with fire. And the man put her through hell.

[ Sighs ] She’s recovered, right? But I haven’t forgotten. One of these days, adam is going to take a step too far. He’s gonna land himself in prison, for good this time. And as far as I’m concerned, that day cannot come soon enough.

Adam: Well, thank you for coming. Please have a seat.

You said you need some investigative work done?

Adam: This — this needs to be handled in the strictest confidence. No one can know about this, except us and victor.

With my boyfriend. And now it’s back to regular life. And I actually do have some errands that I need to run before I knock out. I think I will add one of my favorite pastries to my caffeine.

Sharon: I promise I will have a pastry with your name on it tomorrow.

Elena: Oh, thank you.

Noah: I’m assuming she’s a regular?

Sharon: Yeah. She lives here. I mean literally lives here, up in the apartment. She used to be lola’s roommate before lola left for miami.

Noah: Huh. I — I guess I just assumed that she lived with nate. But I get couples wanting to keep separate places. Some people need that distance.

Sharon: Is that just a general observation, or are you referring to what happened in london?

Noah: It was just a thought, mom. Alright? Don’t worry.

Sharon: The way you keep trying to avoid the subject makes me think otherwise. So, how worried should I be?

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: So, you have time for coffee with jack, but you don’t have time for us to talk things out. And tonight’s winning numbers are 18,

Phyllis: Okay.

[ Sighs ] Listen. I was just a little frustrated and angry to deal with you earlier, and I just thought that jack could bring me down a notch. That’s all.

[ Sighs ]

Nick: Yeah. You needed to see jack because, uh, you were angry about my text.

Phyllis: Okay, it wasn’t just the text. It was the argument that we had yesterday. That’s what it was about. And I went to all this trouble to get a bunch of stuff and create, like, a romantic dinner, and, you know — which is why i just drank a bunch of champagne in my room alone.

[ Sighs ]

Nick: But I canceled, so in a way, it is about the text.

Phyllis: Okay, it’s about the text. It’s about — and I know that overindulging in my room was a mistake. I know that.

Nick: I’m not judging.

Phyllis: Really? That’s shocking because you usually would. That’s why I felt the need to criticize myself before you had a chance to.

Nick: I’m sorry if I made you feel like that. That was not my intention.

Phyllis: Okay. I believe you. Listen, I’m just, um — I’m hurt and angry and… I don’t know what’s going on with us. We are so out of sync.

Nick: Well, I do know us not talking to each other is just making the problem worse.

Phyllis: Okay, well, I just needed to take a second. I needed some space before I say the wrong thing. You know what I’m saying. You understand that, right?

Nick: Yes. I get it. I think both of us have let our emotions get the better of us, which hasn’t helped matters. So, let me just say this, and then I’ll take off. You got nothing to be scared of.

Phyllis: I’m a bigger mess than I was before. Can we get out of here, please?

Jack: You don’t have to ask a second time.

Sharon: I won’t pry about that anymore.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Sharon: But can I ask, um — is your relationship ending the only reason why you wanted to leave england?

Noah: No. I was serious when I said I was feeling like I was stuck in a rut, and both professionally and artistically, I — I just needed a change, and I think coming home was the right move.

Sharon: I’m just glad you’re here.

Nate: I’m more than willing to look into this other treatment and share my opinion. But I still think your oncologist is probably the best source for advice about potential next steps.

Victoria: Well, we’re not actually happy with the doctor. He’s not really keeping an open mind about other options, and he’s not listening to ashland’s needs and his concerns.

Ashland: Yeah, nate, I don’t want to waste any more of my time and energy trying to convince this man to listen to me.

Nate: Okay. I understand. Sometimes a doctor isn’t a good fit for a patient. And it’s always good to get a second and perhaps third opinion.

Ashland: I appreciate that, nate. And I deeply appreciate your support and friendship, as well.

Nate: Always happy to help. Well, go ahead and e-mail the information about the peruvian treatment, and I will get back to you.

Victoria: Will do.

Ashland: And, nate —

Nate: I know. I know. As soon as possible.

Victoria: We’re trying to remain realistic about this, but we’re hoping that you’ll have some good news for us.

Nate: Me too.

[ Sighs ] I just heard something amazing!

Phyllis: Mmm. The fall air. I love it. I love the company, too.

Jack: I’m happy to provide it.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] I’m sorry. I keep on dumping all of my stuff on you. It must be déj vu for you.

Jack: No, it doesn’t feel like that at all, and I don’t want you feeling bad for turning to a friend, no matter what the problem is. So, what happened last night?

Phyllis: After I spoke to you, I went back to the place, and I set everything up, you know, very romantic, the whole shebang, right? And I got a text from nick saying that he had to stay home with christian. And I get that. Christian comes first. I mean, but I just wonder if it was even true.

Jack: Well, do you really think he would use his son as an excuse not to talk to you?

Phyllis: I don’t know anymore. I don’T. I just know he’s going through a lot of turmoil with his family, and that turmoil seems to be bringing out issues in our relationship.

Jack: Can you articulate those issues — not to me — to nick and to yourself and, more importantly, to each other?

Phyllis: No. I don’t even know what they are. Honestly. I’m so irritated. And I know that nick was as frustrated with me as I was with him yesterday. But then he shows up this morning like, “no problem. Let’s talk. It was just a bump in the road.” But it’s not a bump in the road. We’re not okay. And — and I just had to get out of there.

Jack: Okay, but if nick is talking like things will be okay…

Phyllis: I’m not okay. I’m not. I don’t live in denial. You know that. I don’t know what’s happening with us, but none of it is alright.

Sharon: Well, if you’re at loose ends, you could always work here. And I’ve heard that deep-cleaning an espresso machine is a great way to get out of an artistic rut.

Noah: Why do I feel like I’m being conned?

[ Both laugh ]

Nick: It’s nice to see you two having fun.

Noah: You okay?

Nick: Yeah. Why?

Noah: Doesn’t seem like it. Have things gotten worse between you and victoria?

Nick: [ Sighs ] I’ve not seen vick since she and ashland got home from tuscany.

Sharon: Well, I spoke to billY. Now I understand ashland has, a much darker past than I had realized.

Nick: I don’t want to get into the details, but there’s been a line drawn in the sand in this family, and dad, vick, and adam are one side, and I am firmly on the other. And mom, as usual, is somewhere in the middle, trying to bridge the gap.

Sharon: Really? That’s a shame. Things seemed to be going so well between you and your family.

Noah: Well, if there’s anything I can do to help, I will. And I know grandma will, too.

Sharon: And I’m here for you, too.

Noah: And no doubt phyllis has got your back.

Nick: Yeah. You would think.

Sharon: What does that mean?

Nick: Phyllis and I are just not in a good place right now.

Noah: Really? It seemed like you guys were all good in italy.

Nick: We spent most of that trip kind of sniping at each other. I don’t know if it was me taking my frustrations out with the family on her, if I was hiding behind my anger for dad and just kind of ignoring the problems that have been ongoing with us, but — I don’t know, man — things just keep getting more tense, and it’s frustrating ’cause every time we talk, it’s like I take one step forward and then six steps back. And…It’s unsettling ’cause, before then, I thought we were really solid.

Noah: Yeah, you know, it’s — it’s a weird feeling when you think everything’s okay… and then suddenly it’s not.

Nick: Hmm. You say that like you know the feeling.

Noah: I experienced something similar recently. I was just telling mom that things haven’t been great for me in the romance department back in london. That’s part of the reason i decided to come back home.

Nick: You running from a break-up?

Noah: Nah, I — I wouldn’t say that. I just — I wanted to be around my familY. It’s nice to be surrounded by the ones who love you the most, especially when you feel like your relationship’s going completely off the rails. Not to say that you and phyllis are completely derailing or anything. It seems like you guys are just hitting some rough waters. I’m sure you’re both strong enough to find your way through.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] You’re awfully quiet.

Sharon: Hmm? Well, what do you expect me to say?

Victoria: I am just so relieved that nate agreed to help us. Although I’m not surprised. You know, it’s really nice having a friend who also happens to be a brilliant doctor.

Ashland: Yes.

Victoria: Ashland. What is it?

Ashland: Nate didn’t seem very enthusiastic about the experimental treatment.

Victoria: Well, how could he be? He doesn’t know much about it. We just — we need to be patient.

Ashland: You know, before i decided to seek treatment, I was at peace with my fate.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Yes, I know. It took a lot of persuading on my part to get you to change your mind about fighting this disease.

Ashland: And I’m so glad that I did. And now that we’re married, i hate the idea of giving up anD…not being with you. What if this is a battle I can’t win? Alice loves the scent of gain so much,

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Elena: Hey, you.

Nate: Hey. How you doing? And how are you still upright? I figured you would have crawled in bed by now.

Elena: Yeah, that’s next on my agenda. But I was starving. Hence, the detour. I wish I’d know you were coming here. I could have joined you.

Elena: I knew you were busy. I got your message that you were gonna be seeing victoria and ashland. How are they? Are they still floating on air post-wedding?

Nate: Not exactly. Turns out ashland’s protocol isn’t working as well as he and victoria had hoped. So they’re interested in a new treatment, and they want me to take a look into it for them.

Elena: Are you worried about what you might find?

Nate: Yeah. This isn’t a typical medical consult. Ashland’s not even my patient. He’s a friend. I’m personally invested in what happens to victoria and ashland, so I can’t maintain the usual degree of professional distance. And…it would be a lot easier if I could. What if I can’t tell them what they’re hoping to hear?

Ashland: You know, for a while, I was so swept up in all the wedding plans and praying that you would forgive me for my sins and hoping that gaines wouldn’t ruin the day. And I’m so grateful that everything worked out, and i couldn’t be more thrilled that you and I are married.

Victoria: I am, too. And I meant every word of my vows. We’re in this together.

Ashland: Yeah, but after receiving these test results, I… just the harsh reality of the situation is staring me in the face. And none of my power or money or influence can get me out of this, and I’m running out of options. I mean, maybe nothing has worked yet because there’s nothing that will work.

Victoria: No. I refuse to accept that. Look, I know that you’re feeling shaken because of the test results, but you’re not looking and thinking about the statistics here. There are people who — after having received the right treatment, they’ve bought themselves more time. Some of them have even beaten it. That — that could happen.

Ashland: You know, for the first time since I decided to fight this, I’m actually scared because the odds are not in my favor.

Victoria: Well, since when have you ever cared about the odds when you want something? You’ve beaten the odds your entire life. I know you’ve been through some rough times, but it’s only made you stronger. You said you were gonna fight this, so you better damn well fight it.

Ashland: Nobody has ever had as much faith in me as you do.

Victoria: Well, look, I know that you’re gonna have some vulnerable moments. But if you’re weak, then — then let me be strong for both of us. We’ve come this far. I mean, we’ve overcome so much. We can’t give up on our future.

Ashland: [ Breathes deeply ]

Sharon: Every relationship has its issues. You know, rey and I have certainly had ours. But, you know, we’ve worked on them, and we continue to do so. So, that’s just part of any successful relationship.

Nick: Hmm. Well, what do you think about me and phyllis specifically?

Sharon: I think, uh, communication is the key.

Nick: I bet she got that off a bumper sticker, don’t you?

Noah: [ Laughs ]

Sharon: Look, um, I don’t know what you want from me. I — the last time we talked about this, I told you I just want you to be happy but you thought that I was saying you were settling, and i never uttered those words.

Nick: It was unfair of me to jump to that conclusion.

Sharon: Okay, well, I want to admit that I’m a little biased when it comes to you and phyllis, so I’m probably not the best person to ask.

Nick: Yeah. Sorry to put you in this awkward position. I’m just dealing with a lot right now. Kind of been bottling it up inside, and the person I always talk to about things like that is victoria. And that door is currently closed. You know, I had the best intentions when it came to her. And she doesn’t understand why i did it or where I was coming from. She doesn’t appreciate it, and now there’s this giant wall between us, just like there is between me and phyllis. Really starting to wonder if I’m the problem.

[ Exhales sharply ]

Phyllis: Nick is going through so much with his family. You know, I can’t win. He doesn’t want to hear the truth.

Jack: Well, maybe — just maybe — your truth isn’t the same as nick’s truth.

Phyllis: What does that mean?

Jack: Okay, for example — and I’m going back a bit — when things got ugly with your own father, you cut all ties with him. You ran away from your family.

Phyllis: Are you serious right now, bringing up my own father? Really? I-I left the family because my father was a criminal. He was a horrible man. He stole from the elderly to make a profit.

Jack: I understand that. But maybe, deep down inside, you wish nick would make the same decision you’ve made, when you know he won’t, when history has proven he can’T.

Phyllis: Okay, well, our situations are different.

Jack: I get that. But maybe you’re holding nick’s decision against him because he didn’t make the same one you’ve made.

Phyllis: Okay. Um, are you saying that I’m responsible for this? Yawns “okay okay, I’m up, I’m up!”

Elena: I love how much you care about the people in your life, but whatever happens to ashland isn’t on you. They asked you to help them because they knew that you could give it to them straight, as a friend. They’re not expecting you to perform any miracles.

Nate: I wish I had the power to save ashland.

Elena: All you have to do is read the studies on the protocols and give them the facts. That way, they can make an informed decision. I think you can do that without any regrets or guilt.

Nate: That’s why I’m grateful to be with someone who gets it.

Elena: Yes. I speak doctor.

[ Both laugh ]

[ Yawns ] Mnh. Excuse me. Sorry. This girl hasn’t slept in a long time.

Nate: Mm.

Elena: But that didn’t have anything to do with you or what we were talking about. I didn’t mean to ruin the moment.

Nate: You didn’T. But I’m worried you’re about to fall asleep on this couch.

Elena: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: How about I take you home and tuck you in?

Elena: Yes. I would love that. Thank you.

Ashland: Okay, message received. When victoria newman orders you to fight, you fight.

Victoria: Very good. Other.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] There’s really no reason for any negativity when we have so much reason to have hope.

Victoria: Yeah. That’s right. I believe in the power of hope. A positive mental outlook. I know it’s probably not gonna cure the cancer, but you never know how your attitude might change things.

Ashland: Well…

Victoria: It’s better than the alternative, you know?

Ashland: If nate thinks that this new treatment and the protocol is worthwhile, then, uh, it gives us another reason to be optimistic.

Victoria: Yes.

Ashland: But that also means that if I do decide on this treatment, I might have to jump right into it, which means your plans for a private island getaway would fly right out the window.

Victoria: Well, if they do, they do. I’m not gonna worry about that right now.

Ashland: You’re being very practical, but you’re also a new bride who deserves a beautiful honeymoon. And I was really looking forward to shutting out the world and just being newlyweds for a while.

Victoria: Well…that is a lovely thought, but I really don’t care about the honeymoon. I just want you to get better. And we are not gonna let anything stand in the way of that.

Jack: I am not laying the blame at your feet. Look, there are complicated dynamics involved where you and nick are concerned. Anytime you bring up the newman family drama, it’s bound to stir up…intense emotions in both of you. I’m sure nick would agree that he hasn’t exactly been his best in this situation.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And?

Jack: And…in the many years I have known you, I have noticed that when things aren’t going the way you want them to be on a personal front, when your back is up, when you are insecure about your ability to salvage the situation, you tend to look for an exit strategy.

Phyllis: Are you saying that I blow up my relationships instead of seeing if they can work out? Are you saying that I’m my own worst enemy?

Jack: I would hate to see you fall victim to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Phyllis, you and nick have been through so much. And yet you are perpetually drawn back together. There’s a reason for that.

Phyllis: Yeah. And there’s a reason why things don’t work out.

Noah: It seems like the situation with victoria is filled with emotional land mines, but there is no way that you are single-handedly responsible for what’s going on. I’m sure you two can work it out ’cause at the end of the day, you’re brother and sister. We’re all family until we die.

Nick: A blessing and a curse.

Noah: We didn’t ask to be born newmans, but it’s what we are.

Nick: You’re damn right we are.

Noah: And as for phyllis, i think you should try to get down to the root of the problem and fix things as soon as you can, you know, before it gets worse.

Nick: When did this kid get so smart?

Sharon: Well, he takes after me.

Nick: [ Chuckles ]

Noah: It’s just my two cents.

Nick: I, uh — I appreciate it. Um, it’s not quite as simple as you make it sound. You know, phyllis and I have got a very long, rocky past. We’ve hurt each other a lot. I can’t ignore the fact that history could repeat itself.

Noah: It will if you allow those thoughts to take over. Don’t let it be a self-fulfilling prophecy. You can either turn yourself into a victim, or you can fight for what you want, no matter how hard it is. It’s up to you.

Nick: Man, you got to take it easy on your old man.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: Oh, I hear you, son. Yeah, I believe in what phyllis and I have. Even though I can feel her pulling away, I can’t let that get in my head. I got to make her understand what we have is worth fighting for. And you know what? I’m gonna start right now. See you guys later.

Sharon: See you.

Do I need to pretreat my

laundry?

Nate: [ Breathes deeply ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Ashland: Excuse me. It’s nate. Hey, buddy. I’m here with victoria, and I’m gonna put you on speakerphone, okay?

Victoria: Hey, nate. Um, so, what is your take on the information we sent you?

Nate: There has been some promising research about the experimental treatment you found. But I would say it’s still a last resort. Chances of improvement remain slim. I understand this is not what you want to hear.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] Yeah, well, we know it’s a long shot, but, uh, I’m willing to do or try anything.

Sharon: You know, I was really impressed with you earlier. That advice you gave your dad — it was spot on.

Noah: For real?

Sharon: Yeah. I’m all for taking control of your life and finding your happiness.

Noah: Mom, I know you have to walk a fine line when you’re talking to dad about these things. But you know you can be honest with me, right? What do you really think about him and phyllis?

Sharon: I want what’s best for your father. I mean that.

Noah: And?

Sharon: And I will never believe that phyllis is what’s best for him.

Noah: What? You — you don’t think they can make it in the long run, even after all they’ve been through?

Sharon: [ Breathes deeply ] I take no pleasure in saying this, but I think that relationship is ready to fall off a cliff. It’s only a question of when.

Noah: [ Sighs ]

[ Door closes ]

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Sally: Adam! Do you have a minute? I don’t mean to brag, but i wanted you to see the latest headline that I spotted. This European magazine is calling me the next Vera Wang. You do know who that is, don’t you, or do you just not agree with the comparison? Okay, well, we need to capitalize on this. And what do you think about doing a feature — “the making of a dream dress”? We can share all the sketches that I made and I can write about the process, I can talk about how I got the measurements and how we rushed it into production and how, against all odds, we got it to the bride just before her wedding day. It’s a really dramatic story. We have to share it. People are gonna eat it up.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: What do you think?

Adam: I think that you should just talk to Chloe, and I’ll go along with whatever she thinks.

Sally: Do you not care?

Adam: Honestly, no, I don’t care about the wedding dress press right now.

Sally: Wow. Okay, I get it. You said you just want to keep things strictly professional when we got back, that’s exactly what you’re doing. I just thought that the fashion division was more important to Newman Media. I guess I was mistaken.

Adam: Sally, you have to stop taking things so personally. There’s more to Newman Media than your fashion line. I’m sorry, I have a call scheduled with an investor that I need to get to.

***************

Nikki: So how long do you think you can stay? I know when we were in London visiting you, I got to see how fabulous your career is going there, so you probably can’t afford to stay away too long.

Noah: Well, thank you for the high praise, but only a proud grandma would characterize my career as fabulous.

Nikki: [ Scoffs ]

Noah: I do okay.

[ Chuckles ]

Nikki: Well, modesty has always been your most endearing trait. I’m sure you must’ve gotten that from me.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Seriously? Hey. Oh, oh, oh. I see where I rate.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] What do you mean?

Phyllis: Well, I mean, since you didn’t want to fly home from Tuscany with me, you wanted to go to London. Apparently
who’s the first person you see when you do get back into town — Sharon.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Noah wanted to surprise his mother and share his big news with her.

Phyllis: What’s his big news?

Nick: Well, he’s decided to stay in Genoa City for the foreseeable future.

***************

Adam: So, my dad tells me that you made quite the noble gesture in Tuscany. You actually deleted the video instead of using it to bury Ashland.

Billy: Don’t sound so shocked.

Adam: No. No, you misinterpret, I’m, um — I’m impressed and I’m shocked that you chose to do the right thing.

Billy: Well, you know me, full of surprises. Speaking of surprises, Jesse Gaines.

Adam: What about him?

Billy: Well, I’m still trying to figure out why he didn’t follow through with his threat to go public with the information that he has. I mean, he’s got the proof to show that Ashland built his entire empire with money stolen from a dead woman.

Adam: Ah. So, the gesture wasn’t that noble after all. You let Gaines be the bad guy.

Billy: Jesse Gaines only agreed to come to Tuscany because he wanted the opportunity to tell the world exactly who Ashland Locke really is. And then he just up and vanishes. Sounds mysterious to me.

Adam: Why is it you are always looking for the nefarious side of everything?

Billy: Maybe it’s ’cause every time you’re involved, it’s always nefarious.
