Gabi: [Laughs] Thought you were gonna let me sleep in this morning.

Jake: I said we could go to the office late. I didn’t say anything about sleeping.

Gabi: Mm, so it’s a question of semantics, huh? Seems kind of underhanded to me.

Jake: Yeah, I guess so. So you want to go back to sleep?

Gabi: Well, no. Seeing I’m awake already.

Jake: I’m wide awake.

[Playful knock at door]

Ava: Room service!

Gabi: The hell?

Jake: Just a minute. Oh, okay!

Ava: Oh, good morning…

Jake: Oh, okay.

Ava: You two. Now, is there a better way to start the day than with a fresh-from-the-oven muffin?

Philip: Good morning.

Chloe: Hey. It is a good morning.

Philip: Thought you said you were going to the office early.

Chloe: I changed my mind. I decided to have a nice, leisurely breakfast by myself and enjoy my roses.

Philip: Ah. Looks like the nursery steered me straight. They seem to be holding up pretty well.

Chloe: Yeah, they’re really beautiful.

Philip: Let’s hope they were right about our tree too. They said it would grow fast.

Chloe: Yeah, I think it will. Before you know it, we’ll be having a picnic in its shade.

Philip: The first of many.

Brady: Morning. Anybody want a muffin?

[Tense music]

 

Xander: Thanks for coming in so early.

Justin: You said it was urgent.

Xander: Well, it is. It kind of is. Yeah. You remember what gwen and i talked to you about yesterday?

Justin: Vividly.

Xander: So you remember that we were thinking about maybe getting something on the judge, you know, to prove that he’s corrupt, so he’ll drop my case.

Justin: I do remember. I do remember.

Xander: Fantastic. Well, after you–

Justin: I didn’t agree to go along with it. Let me tell you what your lawyer would tell you, if you had one. What you’re talking about is blackmail, okay? It could blow up in your face. And gwen’S. And you could end up in even bigger trouble than you’re already in.

Xander: It could help you out with bonnie’s case.

Justin: Don’t push it, cook. I’m an officer of the court, okay? I have an ethical duty to tell judges the truth.

Xander: Isn’t what we told you privileged?

Justin: No. Because I am not your attorney. But let me give you some free advice. Don’t even think about going ahead with this little plan, because it’s not only illegal, it’s stupid.

Xander: Problem is, gwen’s already on her way to see him.

Smails: Marjorie, I told you I didn’t want to be disturbed.

Gwen: Judge smails.

Smails: Who the hell are you?

Gwen: Gwen rizczech. I know I shouldn’t have barged in like this, but there was nobody out there.

Smails: Well then, wait till there is, and make an appointment.

Gwen: Yes, I would have. You see, I’m here on a very private matter.

Smails: What private matter?

Gwen: Well, I’m a friend of xander cook.

Smails: Then get out.

Gwen: No, judge smails, please.

Smails: Young lady, I am not about to have an ex parte conversation with the friend of someone who’s appearing in my court. If you want to communicate with him, you’ll have to go through his lawyer.

Gwen: I understand. But it’s just that, well, xander’s not just a friend. He’s actually probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And if you do not hear me out, he might go to prison for something that he has not done. Judge, I just cannot allow that to happen.

Chloe: Brady, what are you doing here?

Brady: Oh, you texted me and said you were gonna be late to work.

Chloe: You said it was okay.

Brady: Mmm. Oh my god. Yeah, no, it is okay, but I realized I didn’t have anything pressing going on this morning either.

Philip: So you decided to come here with muffins.

Brady: No, I didn’t bring these. I found these on the kitchen table. And these are fabulous, by the way. But that’s not why I came. I came to see the most beautiful woman that I know.

Tripp: So doug is now in bayview?

Kayla: Oh, tripp, it is so sad. Marlena has determined that he is a danger to himself and to others.

Tripp: I feel so sorry for his wife and his entire family. He’s such a good guy.

Kayla: Well, hopefully he’ll be able to go home soon. On a completely different note, about our new hospital initiative here.

Tripp: Mm-hmm.

Kayla: Thank you for taking the lead on that.

Tripp: Yes.

Kayla: Have you had any luck finding a patient that will volunteer to be the face of the campaign?

Tripp: As a matter of fact, I have.

Steve: And that would be me. It’s my 4:05 the-show-must-go-on

Kayla: So your father is your volunteer?

Steve: If you’re referring to the new program here at salem university hospital that you need some handsome devil to be the face of, yes, I’m the volunteer.

Tripp: Dad pretty much pounced on it.

Kayla: Okay.

Steve: I mean, look at this mug. Can’t do any better than this, right?

Kayla: Well, there is a patient in 608 who bears a striking resemblance to george clooney.

Steve: You with the george clooney again. Okay, well there might be a whole lot more handsome mugs out there than I am, but none as highly motivated as I am to make this hospital proud. Because my wife is the chief of staff here, and my son is on his way to becoming an esteemed physician.

Kayla: Okay, mr. Highly motivated. Do you know what you’re volunteering for and what your responsibilities will be?

Steve: No.

Tripp: No, we didn’t get that far, actually.

[Cell phone rings]

Kayla: Oh, ah-pa-pa-pa-pa. Excuse me. Ah, I gotta take this. Be right back.

Steve: So what exactly will I be the face of, son?

Tripp: Well, you know, it’s flu season, and we’re trying to raise awareness for pneumococcal pneumonia and the need to get inoculated.

Steve: Oh, so you want me to get a flu shot?

Tripp: Basically, yeah.

Steve: Sorry, son. It’s not gonna happen.

Justin: Wow. What a great plan. That is genius!

Xander: You don’t have to be sarcastic.

Justin: No. No. Did you or did you not tell me that gwen was planning on sleeping with judge smails? A little bit of tit-for-tat?

Xander: Hey, watch it.

Justin: I just told you that trying to get some dirt on the judge was stupid. Deciding to be the dirt on him is–you know, hearing this, I could have been derisive, disgusted, even angry at your total contempt for the legal system. You should be happy I settled on sarcastic.

Xander: You’re actually kind of a prig, aren’t you, justin?

Justin: You’re sending your girlfriend off to sleep with another man in order to save your butt? I don’t care if you think I’m a prig.

Xander: Well, you don’t listen either, do you? She’s not actually gonna sleep with him! Just offer to. She’s gonna tape the whole thing, and once the judge knows that we have proof that he accepts favors for dismissing favors, he’ll have no choice but to dismiss mine. It’s genius.

Smails: I’m afraid you have nothing to say about what happens to mr. Cook.

Gwen: No, please.

Smails: The depth of your feelings for him is irrelevant.

Gwen: But please, if you–

Smails: Now, I have told you to leave. You really don’t want to force me to call security.

Gwen: But there are extenuating circumstances.

Smails: Oh, lord.

Gwen: Please. Please. Sorry. I’m sorry. Just let me explain. You see, xander has been railroaded. He was never dealing drugs.

Smails: His lawyer will have ample opportunity to prove that in court.

Gwen: Yes, but you see, sir, that is the problem. He did hire a lawyer, ej dimera, and he got the case dismissed, but it was somehow reinstated. And neither one of us can understand how that happened. But now, it seems to me that you–you are the only one who can change that back.

[Dramatic music]

 

Philip: Oh, brother.

Chloe: Brady, this isn’t funny.

Brady: She walks in beauty, like the night. And she says “something something starry skies.” So good.

Chloe: Brady, what are you doing?

Brady: I’m eating a muffin.

Philip: Eating a muffin and trying to drive me crazy. You want a coffee, brady?

Brady: I wouldn’t say no to that. Thanks.

Chloe: This isn’t cool, okay?

Brady: Am I interrupting something? I can go wait in the kitchen.

Philip: The kitchen? Thought you were to see the most beautiful woman in the world.

Jake: Because you came in uninvited.

Ava: I just wanted to make sure you got the muffins while they were still warm. Buon appetito.

Ava: No. But they aren’t gluten-free, if that’s an issue for you. So mangia, mangia. Si fa bene. Oh, gabi, you look so cute with bedhead.

Jake: Is it really winning if you’re miserable 24/7? Because you have been miserable 24/7 since the moment we moved in here.

Chloe: Well, everyone’s really missed you.

Philip: It’s just a work thing. So good to see you.

Maggie: Thanks, philip.

Philip: When I get home tonight, we’ll have a proper celebration.

Maggie: Well, it’s wonderful to be back.

Philip: Chloe? I’ll see you later. Brady, good to see you.

Maggie: So are you and philip getting along?

Brady: Oh, yeah. Yeah, absolutely.

Maggie: Yeah. I didn’t think so.

Smails: So in the first motion to dismiss, ej dimera was mr. Cook’s representation.

Gwen: That’s right.

Smails: Then I don’t see the problem. Mr. Cook already has a capable defense attorney for the case.

Gwen: Yes, but not anymore. The creep dropped xander as a client. I supposed he felt like he couldn’t squeeze any more money out of the poor guy, and now he’s in jail. Xander, that is. And he hasn’t done anything wrong.

Smails: The fact that mr. Dimera dropped him as a client is not a reason for me to change my recommendation.

Gwen: Yes, but you changed it for–

Smails: And if mr. Cook doesn’t have an attorney, the court will appoint one.

Gwen: But it doesn’t seem fair. He trusted dimera, and now he’s left him high and dry.

Smails: I’m sorry. But as the presiding judge, there’s nothing I can do.

Gwen: Really? But you were able to dismiss the case before. And then dimera was able to just go in there and get it reversed. How could he do that? I mean, you ruled that there was no case, and now xander is going back to trial in your courtroom!

[Tense music]

I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I know I don’t know the law like you do. Just that, well, you said that there wasn’t enough evidence, and you dismissed the case before, so why isn’t there just a way that you could dismiss the case again?

Smails: Ms. Rizczech…

Gwen: I’m so sorry. I know–now I’m getting emotional. I just–it’s so frustrating. You see, I would do anything to help xander. I mean anything.

Justin: It’s genius? Ha! Look, even if judge smails is corrupt…

Xander: You know he is, though.

Justin: He didn’t get where he is by being easily duped. You don’t think he’s gonna be wary when your girlfriend shows up out of the blue and suddenly offers herself to him? He’ll have her arrested before she even gets out of the office.

Xander: I know that! That’s-that’s why I told her not to confront him with the evidence herself. I told her to bring the tape back to me.

Justin: Whoa, what am I missing? What are you gonna do with the tape? Invite the judge to your cell for a little chat?

Xander: No. I’m not going to confront the judge with the tape. You are. Shingles? Oh… you mean bill.

Justin: Have you heard a word I said? I am not going to have any part in this.

Xander: You might not have a choice.

Justin: And just what is that supposed to mean?

Xander: I just think that, to an outside observer, or a cop, it might look like you have already taken part in it. Think about it. You came to visit the police station yesterday, and you talked to gwen and me all alone in this room for quite a while. And then this morning, you show up here first thing, at the exact time gwen showed up at the judge’s office. From the outside, it really does look like you are part of this. And what would happen if gwen and I said that it was all actually your idea–in fact, you came to us?

Justin: Are you threatening me?

Xander: I really don’t want to. I want to persuade you. And everything that I said yesterday, that still holds true today. You can use the tape to get the charges against bonnie dropped too. And as you said, as an officer of the court, smails will know, if you have the tape, it won’t be so easy to make it disappear.

Justin: Huh. Wow. You are a true kiriakis.

Xander: I’m not trying to screw you over, justin. I swear I’m not. But this could work out for both of us.

Justin: You don’t give a damn about me.

Xander: But you give a damn about bonnie. And the last I heard, she just got denied bail again. Now she’s got to sit all alone in that cell, waiting for a trial where she’s charged with two murders, defended by the man she was about to marry, until he found a dead body in his bed.

Justin: Shut up!

Xander: Can I just ask you just a quick legal question, justin, if I may? Don’t you think the da is going to want to call you to the stand to testify not just about that dead body, but about what bonnie did to your first wife. I mean, aren’t prior bad acts also admissible?

Justin: I said shut up.

Xander: Gwen and I came up with a stupid plan, a crap plan. But it still has a hell of a lot better chance of helping bonnie than anything else you’ve got.

Maggie: I’m sorry you were worried about me. But you know, when summer died, as awful as it was, it was also a relief that she wasn’t in any more pain. When I went to la and I scattered her ashes over the ocean, it was this sense, I don’t know, of calm that washed over me, ’cause I knew she was finally– she was finally at peace.

Brady: I’m really glad you were with her at the end.

Maggie: Yeah. Me too. But I’m very happy– I’m very happy to be home.

Brady: This place is not the same without you. You have a soothing effect, maggie, especially on you-know-who.

Maggie: From time to time.

Brady: I don’t know if he told you, but he had a party to celebrate bonnie’s arrest.

Maggie: Gee, justin must have really appreciated that. And no, he–victor, he didn’t share that with me.

Chloe: I wonder why?

Maggie: Well, at least there was some good news, happy news, on the home front.

Brady: Really? I’d love to hear it.

Maggie: Oh, come on, brady. Don’t me coy with me. Victor told me the two of you were back together.

Ava: Well, you took your own sweet time getting here.

Philip: Family business. So you got the goods on jake?

Ava: Yeah. I spoke with angelo. He gave me some very interesting information.

Philip: Interesting?

Ava: Damning.

Philip: Enough to take gabi down?

Ava: If she cares about jake as much as she says she does, she’s gonna fold like a house of cards. Because if this gets into the right hands, jake will go to prison for a long, long time.

[Desolate music]

 

Gabi: The fall line is falling off the shelves. If these projections hold, I mean, sales are gonna exceed all of our targets.

Jake: Great.

Gabi: Did you just-did you just take a bite out of that muffin?

Jake: You want one?

Gabi: That–that’s a bite mark. Does that–that looks like a bite mark to me.

Jake: Okay, it was one bite. All right? I mean, you actually think that ava would–

Gabi: What?

Jake: Would actually–

Gabi: Jake, stop it. No, jake. No! No! Are you serious? No! Stop! Oh my god! Baby… it was an act?

Jake: Who is naive now? Yes, it was an act!

Jake: And it was a damn good one, if I don’t say so myself. Now give me my muffin back.

Gabi: I’m gonna take your mind off of that muffin.

Jake: Are you now? Okay.

Tripp: I don’t get it, dad. I mean, what’s the downside?

Kayla: Okay, guys. What’s going on?

Tripp: Dad doesn’t want to get a flu shot.

Kayla: What? Why not?

Steve: Because I’ve never had one. And I rarely get the flu. And I’m healthy as a horse.

Kayla: Well, that is the lamest reason I have ever heard in my entire life. And I can’t believe that I missed you not having that shot. It’s important. And you, you, mr. Healthy as a horse, could be sick as a dog with the flu if you were exposed. And, you know what? There’s no risk to it. And, being a medical professional, I am going to insist that you get that damn shot and stop acting like you’re so invincible. You hear me?

Steve: Well, I guess she told me.

Tripp: Kind of.

Steve: All right. I’ll be the face of your campaign, and I’ll get the flu shot.

Kayla: Damn right, you will. We’re for those who love to discover.

Kayla: So I think, if you take this over there–oh. Ah! There he is. Were you a brave boy?

Steve: Yeah. I was brave.

Kayla: Uh-huh.

Steve: Partly because I didn’t feel a thing.

Kayla: Mm-hmm.

Steve: And because, actually, I’m grateful to my wife and son for encouraging me to do it. Because now, I really do feel invincible.

Tripp: Well, I’m grateful for you, for actually coming around, dad, because you really are the perfect face for this program.

Tripp: Yes, yes, that, and, you know, although everyone should get the flu shot, the target demographic is 65 and over.

[Laughter]

Philip: Wow, this is damning. If it’s true.

Ava: Well, according to angelo, it is.

Philip: Jake did all this?

Ava: I can even produce an eyewitness.

Philip: Are you sure you want to do that? If a mob informant steps up, gabi would have a pretty good idea where this came from. My guess is she’d be more than happy to tell rafe about it.

Ava: She won’t be able to prove anything. Especially if you say it came from someone you met during our ill-fated association. But deep inside, she’ll know it was me. She’ll know that I’m the one who blew up her life.

Gabi: You know, now that the keylogger’s kaput, we’re gonna need to find something to make sure that philip stays jealous of brady.

Jake: Wow. Talk about hot pillow talk. I just gave you my best stuff, and here you are talking about two other dudes. Really?

Gabi: Oh, come on, don’t look at it like that. The power of your love empowers me.

Xander: Justin, maybe it’s time that you remember that you’re a kiriakis too.

[Soft dramatic music]

 

Justin: I can never forget it.

Xander: Look, I know you want to be all legal and everything, but the law doesn’t matter to smails. It doesn’t matter to this da, either. They’re the ones in charge. Smails is a corrupt judge who will sell himself to the highest bidder. The da is a power-mad bitch who will do anything for a headline. And bonnie is a headline superspreader. Two murders, justin! With her record, how many years is she gonna get?

Justin: It was self-defense. Both times, it was self-defense.

Xander: And bonnie shouldn’t be punished for protecting herself. But we both know justin the lawyer can’t help her now. But justin the kiriakis can. Think about it this way. Neither smails nor trask would think twice about doing something like this. Is your high-mindedness really worth bonnie spending the rest of her life in statesville? Can I say one more thing?

Justin: Can I stop you?

Xander: Just imagine the look on victor’s face when you tell him that bonnie’s going to go free.

 

Smails: What are you suggesting?

Gwen: That, if the case against xander gets dismissed again, I would be very happy to show you how grateful I am.

Smails: You’re a very beautiful woman.

Gwen: Would you like to know a secret about me? I am very, very attracted to powerful men. I just get– I get so excited in their presence.

Smails: Really?

Gwen: Well, you know, you could find out for yourself. I may not have ej dimera’s money, but… I do have other assets.

Smails: Agreed.

Gwen: I’m really looking forward to holding up my end of the bargain.

Xander: Oh, come on. Smails is a piece of dirt who has it coming. He’s everything you hate. Victor’s a pillar of virtue compared to him.

Justin: This could all be hypothetical, because I’m still not sure that gwen is going to be able to pull this off.

Gwen: You really don’t have much faith in me, do you?

Xander: What happened?

Gwen: Exactly what I said would happen.

Xander: Yes!

Gwen: We’re meeting this eve. Surprisingly, he was even able to name a motel that he found to be discreet. I think maybe he’s done this before.

Xander: Now we have what we need to get him. That is, if justin will help us.

Brady: What–what exactly did victor tell you?

Maggie: That the two of you were back together.

Brady: He was–he was… premature. You know granddad. When he wants something to happen, in his mind, it happened.

Maggie: Yeah, but victor hates chloe. Chloe, I’m sorry.

Chloe: Hey, it’s the truth.

Maggie: But why would he want the two of you back together?

Chloe: To get me away from philip.

Maggie: But that doesn’t mean he wants you with brady.

Chloe: I think he just wants me to disappear.

Brady: And since that’s not going to happen, I think victor’s decided that I hit the bottom of the barrel with kristen.

Chloe: Yeah, and as he so sweetly put it, I was the lesser of two evils.

Maggie: To think I miss that man.

Ava: Oh, well, isn’t this déj vu? Think I just saw you with a muffin.

Jake: Yeah. You did.

Ava: But mine was pumpkin. That looks like blueberry?

Jake: You’re observant. From sweet bits. I didn’t eat any of yours.

Jake: It’s not exactly my favorite, but that’s not why I didn’t eat it.

Gabi: You wanted to talk to me?

Philip: I did.

Gabi: Well, why here? Why not at the office?

Philip: I thought it’d be best to do this in private, in case there was some kind of scene.

Gabi: Did you not see my numbers this morning? Why would there be a scene?

Philip: Because I’m firing you. Serena: It’s my 3:10

Gwen: Ugh, what a sleaze that judge was. I need to have a shower now.

Xander: Gwen, I just hate that you had to go through that. Well, you didn’t have to go through it, but you–you did it anyway, for me.

Gwen: Look, I only needed to come on to some creep. I didn’t even have to follow through, did I?

Xander: It’s just, justin had me so scared.

Gwen: What?

Xander: Well, he kept going on about how this plan of ours could blow up in our faces, especially yours. And I was just so glad when you walked through the door.

Gwen: Look how much you’ve done for me. And you and I are gonna walk out that door together, thanks to justin.

Justin: Sorry to barge in. Your assistant wasn’t at her desk.

Smails: Mr. Kiriakis. I don’t believe any of your cases are before me today.

Justin: No, your honor. I’m here about bonnie lockhart’s case.

Smails: I’m afraid I have a full docket. We’ll talk about it later.

Justin: No, actually, we need to talk about it right now. I’d like to strongly suggest that you dismiss her case, as well as the case against xander cook.

Smails: And why would I do that?

Justin: Because if you don’t, I will be playing this recording.

Gwen: I am very sorry to do this, but you–you understand my situation, and I need to be clear, because I know that you and i can have a really good time together. Hmm? I will sleep with you if you promise to let xander go. I believe that they call that a quid pro quo? Agreed?

Smails: Agreed.

Lani: Okay.

Lani: Good. Sorry I was gone so long. I really wanted to help you put them down, but my dad called and said he needed more time.

Eli: Is he still planning on popping the question?

Lani: That is the plan. Just hope it all goes smoothly.

Abe: And for dessert, the pice de résistance, mwah, homemade key lime pie.

Paulina: Key lime pie? Did you say key lime pie?

Abe: I did.

Paulina: Who told you it was my favorite?

Abe: It’s not?

Paulina: I hate key lime pie.

Abe: Well, chanel specifically said that your favorite pie was key lime pie.

Chanel: Since when do you not love key lime pie?

Paulina: Since the day I was born. I’m sorry abe, chanel got it dead wrong.

Chad: Hmm. What? You think you’re gonna finance your film by playing for pocket change in the square?

Johnny: Actually, I was trying to impress a girl.

Chad: Aww, did it work?

Johnny: Made her smile.

Abigail: Sounds like a win.

Johnny: So, is this how you and the wife spent an evening at home?

Chad: Oh, only when abigail can’t tear herself away from what she’s reading.

Johnny: Ohh, which is the script I see. Does this mean you’ve agreed to play marlena?

Rafe: Oh, business must be good as you’re out celebrating.

Ej: Business? This is pure pleasure.

Rafe: Wait a minute, you two are on a date?

Ej: As a matter of fact, we are.

[Nicole chuckles]

Eli: So you still cool with your dad and aunt paulina being a married couple?

Lani: I think they’re great for each other. Although yes, it will be a little weird that aunt paulina is gonna be my aunt and my stepmom.

Eli: Yeah, well what if she wants you to start calling her mama?

[Lani chuckles]

Chanel: Mama, I have seen you put away a whole key lime pie after a bad day.

Paulina: If I was to eat a whole pie by myself, which has never happened, it would be a florida lime pie. There’s a world of difference.

Chanel: Like what?

Paulina: Well, like for starters, florida lime pie doesn’t have that nasty graham cracker crust. I hate graham crackers, they’re for kids. And I’m all grown up.

Abe: Well, there is pecan pie.

Paulina: Pecan pie. Oh, I’m sorry, abe, I hate that too. Oh, now tammy, if she was here, she’d be all over it. And I keep telling her, “tammy, now that pie, that’s a heart attack waiting to happen.” Oh, I feel so bad that you worked so hard making me pies I don’t like. Oh, but don’t worry about a thing, I’ll just skip dessert. But, ooh, if you two will excuse me, these heels are killing me.

[Grunts]

Chanel: Oops.

Rafe: Is he for real? You two are actually on a date?

Ej: Why is that so difficult to understand? We used to be married, twice in fact.

Rafe: That’s exactly my point. Yeah, I thought you had figured this guy out.

Ej: You know what they say, old man, third time’s a charm.

Nicole: Hold your horses there, old man.

[Ej chuckles]

[Sighs] This is just a date, marriage is not on the table. It’s been a long time, a lot has happened. We’re just catching up.

Rafe: Good to know.

Ej: Hm, may I assume this is now settled?

Rafe: Do you know, I would love to invite you to join us, but you might actually say yes. So if you’ll excuse us.

Ava: Enjoy your dinner.

Chanel: I am so sorry, abe. I didn’t know there was any such thing as florida lime pie.

Abe: Well, don’t worry about it. I mean, your mother’s right, we just won’t serve dessert.

Chanel: You’re–[Quietly] You’re proposing tonight, everything has to be perfect.

Abe: Yeah, we’re still gonna have a delicious meal.

Chanel: No, no. You know what? This one is on me. I am getting you a florida lime pie.

Abe: No, no, we just don’t have–

Lani: How come you got all quiet all of a sudden?

Eli: I was thinking about my grandma. I talked to her while you were out.

Lani: How’s julie doing?

Eli: Doug hit her with something, she was out cold.

Lani: Oh, my god. Babe, that’s horrible. Is she okay?

Eli: Yeah, but it’s clear that she can’t be around doug alone anymore.

Lani: So what is she gonna do?

Eli: Marlena admitted him into bayview sanitarium for his own good.

Lani: Oh, my god. I felt terrible for them both.

Eli: Yeah, me too.

Lani: I’m so sorry that I wasn’t here when you heard all of this.

Eli: It’s okay, you’re here now. So how was shopping with paulina?

Lani: Well, it gave us a chance to talk. We talked about the whole paris trip that didn’t happen.

Eli: Did she explain why she ghosted you like that?

Lani: Well, there was no business trip and it was all my mother.

Eli: Wait, what?

Lani: Mm-hmm. She talked aunt paulina out of taking me to paris, said she didn’t want her spoiling me.

Eli: She let you think that aunt paulina dumped you and she didn’t tell you that she was the one that canceled the whole thing?

Lani: Nope. And neither did paulina. I guess she didn’t want me to turn against my mom.

Eli: Yeah, I guess. Sounds like there’s more to the story than what paulina is telling you though.

Johnny: So you gonna do it? She gonna do it?

Chad: Um, she’s on the fence. Is that right?

Abigail: I think it sounds like fun, but I–

Johnny: But what?

Chad: Like, she’s just–she’s nervous because she’s never really acted before–sorry, professionally acted before.

Johnny: But I don’t want professionals. I want this to feel like it’s happening in real time with real people.

Abigail: A story about demonic possession.

Johnny: Look, the performances if they’re right, are gonna be what grounds the material, okay? You’ve known grandma marlena your whole life, and you’re really smart. You’d be great as her.

Abigail: I hope so. I mean, I do, I have experience with mental illness more than once so I do know what it feels like to have something you don’t understand take over your mind.

Ej: Why are we even talking about rafe? Why does he care who I’m seeing? He’s here with ava vitali.

Rafe: I can’t believe nicole’s actually out on a date with that guy. He’s treated her like trash.

Ava: Well, people do change rafe, I am living proof of that.

Rafe: Yeah. But not ej. Guy was born on third base, he thinks he’s hit a triple. Look at nicole, she’s totally falling for his act.

Ava: You don’t know that, it’s just a date. Like the one we’re supposed to be on.

Eli: So now that our little devils are sleeping like angels, what should we do?

Chanel: To make a pie.

Eli: I don’t understand.

Paulina: Oh, it’s so sweet of you to make dinner.

Abe: Well, you know, I could not have done it without input from your mother and chanel. Would you like some wine, may I pour it for you?

Paulina: Yes, you may.

Paulina: So where is that daughter of mine?

Abe: You know, I don’t know. She said she had an errand.

Paulina: [Laughs] Probably an errand named giovanni.

Abe: Ooh, is that the boy she’s seeing?

Paulina: His real name’s johnny. He made up the giovanni part.

Abe: Ah. You know, actually, his grandfather used to call him that.

Paulina: How do you know?

Abe: If his last name is dimera then he was my late wife’s nephew, and mine.

Paulina: Ohh, then you know all about him. Well, I only know what I see. He’s a real cutie patootie and he knows it. I only hope he’s good enough for my chanel.

Abe: Well, he was a great little kid, but if he takes after either one of his parents, chanel is going to have her hands full.

Paulina: Oh dear.

Abe: Well, chanel can take care of herself, she gets it from her mother.

[Both chuckling] To you my love.

Paulina: Aww.

Chad: Look, the only reason I work for dimera is because tony insisted. So if I piss off ej and he tries for another power grab then I’m out on my ass.

Johnny: So that’s the only thing keeping you from investing in your favorite nephew?

Chad: I would say it’s a pretty big thing. Who said you’re my favorite nephew?

Johnny: Come on, man, I’m your good luck charm. I was there when you met aunt abigail.

Chad: What?

Abigail: Yes. Yes, he’s right. It was java cafe, I thought you were johnny’s father.

Johnny: See?

Chad: Oh, sure.

Johnny: Yeah, i am responsible for putting you two kids together.

Chad: Uh-huh. Yeah, I remember you said you didn’t like her.

Abigail: Oh, excuse me.

Johnny: Hey, hey. Come on, I was just a dumb little prepubescent kid, how the hell did I know she was gonna be the love of your life and the star of my movie. A movie that’s not gonna happen if you don’t invest.

Chad: So that’s a-that’s emotional blackmail.

Chad: That you’re not gonna put her in your movie if I don’t give you the money.

Johnny: There’s not gonna be a movie to put her in if I don’t have the money for it. And my dad’s pretty much made sure that I don’t have any other family members to hit up.

Chad: Mm-hmm. Okay, so I either piss off ej or I deprive my beautiful wife of doing what she wants to do? Thanks a lot, pal.

Ej: Would you please stop that?

Nicole: Stop what?

Ej: Mooning over rafe.

Nicole: I’m looking at the menu.

Nicole: I always do that. You know, they say it’s a good brain exercise.

Ej: No one says that.

Nicole: Yeah. Well–whatever.

Ej: I thought the stated purpose of this evening was to help you put rafe out of your mind. But since this isn’t working, why don’t we go back to my place? I’m sure cook will be more than happy to whip up dinner for miss nicole.

Nicole: But the waiter just opened a $300 bottle of wine. You really want it to go to waste?

Ej: No I don’t, and it won’T.

Rafe: What’s this?

Ej: A very lovely and expensive parting gift. You two have a great night.

Ava: Thank you.

Ej: Shall we?

Rafe: [Exhales] Okay. Turns out deb’s constipation with belly pain

Eli: I don’t get why pie is so important.

Chanel: I just thought it would be cool if abe could present the ring on top of the piece of the pie. And also because I just really want this night to be perfect. I feel like I’m the one who screwed it up and I need to fix it. For mama.

Lani: That’s really sweet of you. You know, you and your mom have really come a long way since you two just blew into town.

Chanel: Yeah, I guess we have.

Paulina: These are the best short ribs I’ve ever tasted. The potatoes are to die for.

Abe: Oh, I’m glad it’s to your liking. And I know you have had a long day.

Paulina: Mm-hmm. But I had such a nice time being with lani.

Abe: Hmm, I’m glad.

Paulina: Mm-hmm. But she kept going on and on about this trip that she’s planning for her and eli. It was almost as if she was–

Abe: She’s not really planning a trip.

Paulina: She was stalling, right?

Abe: I called her and i told her that I needed more time to get dinner ready and she was–she was great about it. And I’ll tell you that I am so blessed to have your niece in my life.

Paulina: Well, lani, she is a very special young woman.

Abe: I am so grateful that we have the rest of our lives to catch up on all those years that we lost. You know, being her dad, it’s one of the most precious gifts god’s ever given to me.

Rafe: No, no, you can’t drink his wine.

Ava: Why not?

Rafe: Because he could have drugged it, that’s why.

Ava: Ugh, rafe.

Rafe: Okay. Suit yourself. I’m gonna order a beer. Oh, my god, where is the damn waiter?

Ava: Boy, ej sure did get under your skin.

Rafe: No, it’s the guy is such a damn phony, you know. Of all the guys that nicole could have chosen to go out with. What?

Ava: What what?

Rafe: I know what you’re thinking. You think that I’m jealous because ej is out with nicole. That’s what.

Ava: Oh. Well, now that you bring it up, are you?

Abigail: You know, I think this is gonna be between you and johnny. Why don’t you just take me out of the equation?

Abigail: Because, you know, it sounds like a really fun challenge to be in a movie, one I never thought I was gonna get to have. But if it doesn’t happen I’m not gonna be heartbroken about it.

Chad: Okay. But maybe a really fun challenge is exactly what you need right now.

Johnny: Right?

Abigail: I don’t wanna alienate ej.

Johnny: Look, I told my dad whether or not I get to make my movie, I’m not going to work at dimera so he’s not getting his way no matter what happens.

Chad: Well, in that case, okay.

Chad: I’ll fund the rest of your movie.

Lani: I cannot believe that your mom and my dad are actually getting married.

Eli: How is that going?

Chanel: It’s going great. Allie and I are making money and we’re having fun doing it.

Lani: And it hasn’t been awkward or anything between you two?

Chanel: She didn’t like it at all. She said johnny’s a real player. And I didn’t wanna be in the middle so I told the two of them to duke it out and I went home.

Eli: Yeah, good move.

Chanel: Yeah, it was because it’s all worked out now.

[Timer buzzes] Oh, finally. I just hope I’m not too late.

Paulina: Oh, abe. I know we talked about this, but I didn’t expect a proposal so soon.

Abe: Well, it’s supposed to be done with a little more finesse. Would you be good enough to give me an answer? I don’t wanna break a hip down here.

Paulina: Oh my, my answer is yes, yes. Yes.

Abe: Well, here, let me have your hand.

Rafe: Okay. Well, did you also know that ej made her life completely miserable? I, mean, he threatened her life more than once. In fact, she was so scared of him when she was carrying his baby she didn’t even want him to know that he was the father, I had to pretend to be the father. Ava: No.

Rafe: Okay.

Ava: I do not. Okay. But nicole is a grown woman and she has the right to make her own decisions. And there’s nothing we can really do about it. At least not tonight.

Rafe: Yes, start by getting rid of this damn bottle of wine.

Rafe: But I’m still not drinking the wine.

Johnny: So, uh, really sorry about that. I hope you haven’t changed your mind about investing in the movie.

Ej: This is unbelievable. My own brother is undermining me with my son.

Nicole: Okay. Ej, I get it, you’re madder than hell, but if you don’t calm down, I feel like you’re gonna have a stroke.

Ej: That’s ridiculous.

Nicole: [Sighs] Ej… sit with me. This is supposed to be a date, right? Humor me.

[Eli exhales sharply] Just take a deep breath.

Ej: [Exhales] I don’t understand why everyone’s against me.

Nicole: Well, all that time you were fighting for your life, they were going on with theirs. But chad is not your kid brother anymore. He’s a man with a wife and kids. And johnny’s growing up too and he wants to be his own man and make his own mistakes.

Ej: I wasn’t there for so long. I’m just trying to be a father to my son again.

Nicole: By forcing him to work at dimera enterprises? Come on, he’s not gonna stand for that. He’s got too much sami in him.

[Eli groans softly] Is that what this is about? Sami?

Chad: Don’t worry, nothing can make me back out.

Chad: [Chuckles] Okay.

Abigail: [Laughing] Oh god, you made his night.

Chad: Forget me, what about you?

Chad: I mean, when you–when you told ej to back off, I could–I could have, could have grabbed you, I could have kissed you. I mean, I still could. We could grab a bottle of champagne and go upstairs celebrate being in the movie business together. What do you say? As a dj, I know all about customization.

Abe: Well, to finding love again when I least expected.

Paulina: Oh, and to us and to all the fun that we’re gonna have together.

[Both laugh]

Chanel: Sorry I’m late. This is a homemade, for real, florida lime pie. I made it for you, mama.

Paulina: Oh, baby, that’s so sweet. And that pie, that looks good.

Chanel: Abe, if you would just join me in the kitchen, you can help me serve the pie.

Abe: Oh, you know, that won’t be necessary.

Ava: Now, I know what you’re thinking.

Rafe: Do you?

Ava: Yes. That even though the night didn’t start off that well, it ended up being pretty nice.

Rafe: You are very perceptive. What am I thinking now?

Ava: Oh. I don’t wanna tell you so I’ll show you. Let’s get the hell outta here. Oh, yeah.

Ej: I don’t know what samantha has to do with any of this.

Nicole: Well, sami cheated on you with lucas, and you feel like you’ve lost control of your life. So now you’re trying to regain that control by telling your son and your brother and everyone else what to do. Ej, you’ve been down this road before. You know, if you try to control people, you’re just gonna push them away. So maybe… maybe if you just back off a little bit, you won’t end up alone.

Ej: I’ll take your advice into consideration. In return, I will make you dinner myself.

Ej: Since someone told me I make a mean omelet.

Lani: Good, auntie p and i are finally done shopping and now we’re both about to head home.

Lani: What? Dad?

Abe: No, no, please, please. You have to stall her! Now look, lani, you promised, remember?

Lani: All right. Yes, I did promise you. And since it’s important, I will take care of it.

Abe: Thank you.

Lani: No problem, just text me when you’re ready.

Abe: I will.

Lani: Bye, dad.

Paulina: Lani, honey? Everything okay?

[Phone beeps]

Nicole: But am I ready?

Rafe: Nicole.

Nicole: Rafe, um, hi. Uh, I–I was just going.

Rafe: Really? ‘Cause it looked like you were coming in.

Nicole: Uh, that’s what I meant. I’m assuming you’re just leaving?

Rafe: Yeah, I am. So we cannot even say hello to each other anymore?

Marlena: I need to figure this out. Figure out what’s wrong.

John: You know, I was also thinking if your memory’s a little fuzzy, you recorded your session with me, is there any way you might’ve recorded your session with doug?

Marlena: [Gasps] I did record it. I did. I’ve gotta go listen to it.

John: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Right now?

Marlena: Yes. Yes. If I’m gonna be able to help doug, I’ve gotta go do it right now.

Julie: Water coming up.

[Water running]

[Metallic slam]

Demon marlena: Nothing personal, julie. But I’ve gotta do something about that pesky husband of yours. And you are going to be the one that helps me shut him up. I just can’t have him out there telling the whole world about me.

Chanel: Oh, hey, abe.

Abe: Oh, chanel.

Chanel: Beautiful flowers and since you’re in an apron and…[Sniffs] Mmm, something smells wonderful. I assume you’re making dinner for mama?

Abe: I am, yes.

Chanel: And that’s probably what you wanted to talk to me about at the bakery so I will make myself scarce.

Abe: Oh, chanel, wait, wait, wait. I did stop by the bakery because I wanted to tell you that I’m proposing to your mother tonight.

Lani: Just a little misunderstanding.

Paulina: Oh, not with eli, I hope.

Lani: No, no, he’s taking care of the kids. So I can spend more to time with you.

Paulina: Oh, that’s so sweet of you, but honey, I cannot take one second longer in these heels. So I’m going home, taking a load off, and having a glass of wine.

Lani: Wait, but, auntie p–

Paulina: Here are the kids’ present here, here you go. I love you, darling. Love you. See you, love you.

John: Hey.

Kayla: I thought I might find you here. I heard you were looking for me.

John: Yeah, I am. I’m looking for doc also. She came to the hospital to listen to this recording.

Kayla: Um, what is it?

John: It’s her session with doug. She was somewhat hazy on what happened right before he collapsed. She thought maybe she could listen to this and refresh her memory.

Kayla: Well, you know that that tape is protected under doctor-patient confidentiality. I mean, you weren’t gonna listen to that, were you?

John: Well, I was tempted. So damn concerned about doug. You know, that’s actually why I was trying to find you. I just came from him and julie, and doug’s saying some pretty crazy stuff.

Kayla: Like what?

John: Well, he told julie and me that marlena tried to kill him.

[Eerie music]

 

[Button beeps]

Rafe: Oh, hey.

Ava: Hey.

Rafe: Hello.

Ava: Hope I’m not disturbing you.

Rafe: No, no, not at all. No, I was just–just thinking.

Ava: About what?

[Knocking on door]

Ej: How is it possible you look so gorgeous after putting in a 12 hour day?

Nicole: Well, it’s more like 11 hours and 45 minutes but who’s counting. You look pretty spiffy yourself.

Ej: [Sighs] Really? The bear?

Nicole: What about him?

Ej: Well, considering his backstory and the fact he’s now perched on your desk, it makes me wonder if you’re still pining over rafe hernandez.

Nicole: [Sighs] I’m not pining for him, no.

Ej: Well, I’m glad to hear it since the whole purpose of this date is for the two of us to move on.

Lani: Please, just stay for a little while longer. There’s something that I really need to talk to you about.

Paulina: Well, well, okay, then I’ll just kick off my heels right here then. Oh. Oh, so, uh, what’s on your mind, darling?

Lani: Well, I’m thinking about surprising eli with a trip as–as a christmas present. And, uh, I know christmas is a few months away, but if i wanna get us decent airfares–

Paulina: Mm-hmm, you gotta do it well in advance. That is the way to go. Oh, that sounds like a wonderful gift. So what kind of trip? Where to?

Lani: I’m not sure. And of course, we need to schedule time off that week for the both of us and then there’s the babies–

Paulina: You want me to take them? Done. No notice necessary.

Lani: Okay, great. Also, I don’t know where to go. So wanted to get your advice on where we should go.

Paulina: Oh, well, let me see. There’s so many amazing places to visit. Greece is one of my favorite countries. You can go to the islands. Or italy. I have a special affection for tuscany. Oh, such gorgeous scenery and such great food. But it’s hard to find anything but great food in for all of italy.

Lani: You know, I think eli would prefer more of a city.

Paulina: No brainer. Paris. Everybody loves paris.

Lani: Ah, I’ve um, I’ve never been.

Paulina: Of course, you haven’t–oh. It’s all because of me.

Chanel: You’re proposing to my mom?

Abe: Well, that’s what I wanted to discuss with you this morning. But you know, I’m gonna do, uh, I’m going to make this brief since your mother may– may be here any minute. Look, chanel, your mother and i have gotten very close lately. And at this point in our lives why–why wait to make a firm commitment? So I wanna ask her to be my wife, which means that I will be your stepfather. And I wanna know what you think.

Chanel: What I think is you’re the best thing that’s happened to mama in forever. You’re one of those guys who when you say everything’s going to turn out all right, it actually does. So… I know you’ll make mama happy.

Abe: Oh, that’s so, so nice to hear, chanel. And, and, and what about the part about me being your stepfather?

Chanel: As you know, my own dad died when I was real young. So, uh… I don’t really remember what it was like having a dad, but I’m guessing it’ll be nice having a step one like you.

Abe: Thank you for that, chanel. And I guess it would be wonderful having a stepdaughter like you. So do I have your blessing to marry your mother?

Chanel: Yes, you do. Definitely.

Abe: Oh, thank you, chanel.

Kayla: Doug thinks that marlena tried to kill him?

John: Well, it’s obvious that he’s not in his right mind, right?

Kayla: That poor man– to believe such a terrifying thing. Oh, wait, sorry. Excuse me.

John: Yeah.

Kayla: Dr. Johnson. Oh. Oh, okay, I’m on my way. Somebody just pushed the call button from doug’s room.

Doug: Stop! Leave julie alone.

Demon marlena: You can barely walk, old man.

Doug: Don’t you dare touch my wife.

Demon marlena: Let go. Get back, get back!

Doug: I won’t let you hurt her.

Kayla: Oh, my god.

John: Doc, what’s going on in here?

Woo! You are busy…

Rafe: Oh, I was just thinking about A…work thing. What brings you by?

Ava: Well, gabby and jake, they’re at the house and they’ve commandeered the kitchen. So I thought that maybe I could take you out to dinner.

Rafe: Are you asking me out on a date, ms. Vitali?

Ava: Mm-hmm, I am.

Rafe: Oh.

Ava: And, you know, maybe we’ll go to the brady pub. You obviously like their coffee.

Ej: Do you know the first thing I did right after samantha left?

Nicole: I’m scared to guess.

Ej: I removed every single trace of her from our home. It was quite cathartic.

Nicole: Oh, well, I’m sensing there’s an object lesson somewhere.

Ej: You say you want to move on from rafe. Getting rid of this silly reminder might do the same for you.

Nicole: Well, it’s not like I can give it back to him.

Ej: Since you’re avoiding each other.

Nicole: Oh, we’re not avoiding each other. We’re just maintaining a certain distance.

Ej: Right. Well, however you characterize it, since giving the bear back to rafe isn’t feasible right now, how about finding duke a new home altogether?

Chanel: So what’s on the menu for tonight?

Abe: Well, I– I called your grandmother in florida and I got her to send me the recipes for all of paulina’s favorites. So I have them cooking in the oven until paulina gets here so they’re ready when she gets here. And lani is stalling her while I’m cooking.

Chanel: Pecan pie?

Abe: Oh, well, I– I did that earlier, so it’s cooling already.

Chanel: I hate to tell you this, but big mama screwed up. Mama hates pecan pie.

Paulina: Oh, there I go, putting my foot in it again. Nothing new there, right? Oh, oh, I’m so sorry, lani.

Lani: Auntie p, it’s okay.

Paulina: No, it’s not okay. Going to paris was your dream when you were a little girl and that, that trip I promised, it never happened. How did I not even think of that when I opened my fool mouth?

Lani: Auntie p, it’s okay. Really, okay? And I’m sorry that it made you so upset.

Paulina: You’re sorry it made me upset? Honey, I’m sorry that I broke your little heart when you were all of eight years old. What kind of a– person does that to a child? Lani, darling. I think it’s high time that we talk about what happened back then.

John: Hey! Hey, you should be in bed. Come on, doug.

Doug: But you don’t understand.

Kayla: Julie, can you hear me? Julie. Julie, wake up. Oh, there you go. Can you sit up?

John: No, no, no, no. You stay right here. You’re doing great. It’s all right, we’re gonna take care of everything.

Julie: Oh! [Winces]

[Exhales slowly] Oh, I guess so.

Kayla: We’ll get that looked at. Do you remember what happened?

Julie: I don’t know.

Doug: It was–

Marlena: It was a blow to the head.

John: That doesn’t make any sense.

Marlena: I hate to say it, but it was doug. Feeling stressed in your skin?

Abe: I don’t understand. Olivia said she was sure that pecan pie was her favorite.

Chanel: Mm-mm. Big mama’s confused, that’s my aunt tamara’s favorite. Mama’s favorite is key lime.

Abe: Well, I guess I have to make a key lime pie.

Chanel: Well, maybe there’s some ice cream in the freezer.

Abe: Oh no, no, no, no. That won’t do. I mean, this is a special evening and I want everything to be perfect. Please, please tell me you have some limes?

Chanel: Uh, I’ll check. I’m pretty sure we do.

Abe: All right. Then I’ll go look up a recipe.

Chanel: Oh, you know what? Let’s make it together. We can have this thing in the oven in 20 minutes.

Abe: Aw. You are the best.

[Both chuckle] All right, I’m gonna call lani now. I’ll text her.

Lani: It’s all right, auntie p, it was a really long time ago.

Paulina: But pain I–I never meant to cause you. I know it’s still there. So now that it’s– it’s out in the open, I just wanna clear the air.

[Phone beeps]

Lani: Well, um… maybe we can do it another time. I think we both should go home. I know you’re tired and–

Paulina: No, no.

Lani: I really wanna be there for eli to put the kids down.

Paulina: Please, please. Please, not yet, not yet. Let me just– let me just get this out here once and for all.

Lani: Okay. Sure.

Paulina: All those years ago, every time I used to pop in and see you and your mom, your nose was in a madeleine book. Nothing made you smile more than when you dreamed about paris. I wanted to be a part of that dream. So I promised you that summer trip and I dreamed that dream right along with you. But all those letters I– I sent you…

Lani: We were gonna eat homard, visit the louvre, and ride les bateaux.

Paulina: You remember?

Lani: I’ve read those letters until they fell apart.

Paulina: And then I broke your little heart. Never showed up, never apologized, never said a word about it.

Lani: Oh, well, you had an important business trip.

Paulina: Said your mama, who lied. And I was the coward who let her tell that lie.

Lani: You both lied to me? Why? Huh? What is the real reason you didn’t take me?

Ej: Is there a problem?

Nicole: No, not at all. I don’t even know why I held onto him that long, but I do know that I am starving, so–

Ej: Allow me.

Nicole: Oh, thank you.

Ej: Shall we?

Nicole: Yes. Purse– oh, you know what? I–I forgot my phone. Uh, it’s on my desk. I’ll be right back.

[Whispering] Sorry, duke.

[Clears throat]

Ej: Find it?

Nicole: Right where I left it. Must’ve been low blood sugar.

Ej: We can remedy that with a feast at julie’s place.

Nicole: Oh, great.

Kayla: Doug attacked julie?

Julie: No!

Marlena: Well, I–I came in to check on doug and when I walked in, that’s when I saw doug hit julie over the head with this. So, of course, I–i grabbed it away and then that was when you came in.

Doug: Oh, no, no. That is not what happened.

John: Take it easy, buddy. Just try to relax.

Kayla: Get in the chair? Are you able to do that?

Julie: I guess.

Marlena: Here, let me help.

Doug: Do not touch my wife.

John: Don’t get all worked up, here, doc’s only trying to help, doug.

Kayla: Do you remember what happened?

Julie: Not much. I was getting doug a drink of water. I turned my back for a second and something hard hit me and– and it all went black.

Marlena: That was what I saw. Doug hit her over the head.

Julie: No, he wouldn’t do that. Darling, I know you would never do that.

Marlena: I–I know how hard this is to accept, but doug just hasn’t– hasn’t been himself.

Doug: I am myself. You are not. She did it. Marlena did it!

[Dramatic music]

The airport can be a real challenge for new homeowners

Marlena: Wait a minute. I hit julie? What earthly reason would I have to do that? Do you need any more proof that he is confused?

Doug: I am not confused. She did it. She tried to kill my julie.

John: You just gotta try to take it easy, buddy.

Doug: I have to protect julie. I have to, john, ’cause I love her. She’s my wife. You cannot keep me away from my wife.

Marlena: Oh, for heaven’s sake, now this needs to stop. Listen, kayla, I think we’ve got to sedate him.

Julie: Oh, it can’t be that bad.

Doug: I know who you are. I know what you did.

Kayla: I’m sorry, but marlena’s right. It’s for doug’s own good.

Doug: What?

Julie: Don’t! Oh, please don’t!

Doug: Don’t, kayla, please.

Kayla: I’m sorry, doug. I’m really sorry.

Doug: Don’t–[Cries] I love you, julie. I love you, my beautiful girl.

[Sobs]

Ej: My favorite wine. Favorite vintage.

[Inhales and sighs] There it is, nape of wild animal neck. Just a hint.

Nicole: Mm, delicious.

Ej: To moving on.

Nicole: To moving on.

[Glasses clink] I don’t know about wild animal neck but this is heaven. And it is the most expensive wine on the list.

Ej: I’ve always enjoyed the finer things in life. As I recall, so do you.

Nicole: When it’s affordable.

Ej: Well, it’s a good thing you’re not with rafe. I assume he’s more of a beer and pretzels kind of a guy. So what do you say, chateaubriand for two?

Rafe: Yeah, no, I, I will have the report on the da’s desk in the morning. Okay. Yeah, I’ll let you know. Okay, thank you. I’m sorry about that.

Ava: No problem. So?

Rafe: So.

Ava: Ready to go to the pub? What ya thinkin’? A burger, some chowder?

Rafe: Yeah, I’m thinking I was actually at the pub for breakfast and for lunch so maybe we could do something different, like, um– I don’t know. Oh, what about julie’s place? Yeah, you could check on your job application.

Ava: Yeah, julie’s place sounds great.

Rafe: Okay.

Ava: But I have rethinking my career goals as of late. You know, why limit myself to the kitchen when there’s so many opportunities out there?

Rafe: Oh, right, yeah. Like working for phillip.

Ava: That’s one, yes. But I also have been putting the word out everywhere that I can think of to see who’s hiring.

Rafe: Okay. Well maybe you can tell me all about it over dinner.

Ava: Mm.

Rafe: Okay?

Ava: Yes, but you know what?

Rafe: Hm?

Ava: Don’t really–[Laughs] Don’t wanna bore you, you know?

Rafe: You never could. Okay.

Ava: Okay?

Rafe: Okay.

Ava: Dinner? [Chuckles] Thanks.

Paulina: The real reason that trip never happened, I was being selfish when I made that promise of seeing paris together.

Lani: How were you being selfish?

Paulina: It was all about me. I wanted to be the one to give you your heart’s desire, to do something special, just the two of us. I cut your mama out when I made it our little secret and that was just, that was just plain unfair. I had no right.

Lani: Why not?

Paulina: There are two secrets. Abe is not lani’s father and tammy is not her mother.

Marlena: How can that be? Tamara raised her.

Paulina: Yes, she did. But I gave birth to her. I am lani’s mother. Serena: It’s my 3:10

Lani: Auntie, what is it?

Paulina: I couldn’t take you on that trip because when I told my sister about my big plans and how I’d sworn you to secrecy, she shut me down. Hard. She was right.

Lani: She thought you were being too extravagant. Like when you got me the pony or sent me all those gifts that she made me send back. She thought you were trying to spoil me.

Paulina: Tammy was right. She raised you with a firm hand. Look, look how you turned out. You’re a strong, wise, independent young woman. And if she’d let me spoil you the way I really wanted to, who knows.

Lani: Or your heart was in the right place.

Paulina: But I broke your little heart into a million little pieces and I don’t blame you if you never, ever forgive me.

Lani: Auntie p, I already have forgiven you.

Paulina: You have?

Lani: Yes. Please, please do not ever worry about this again. Okay? I love you so much.

Paulina: Oh, you just don’t know how much this means to me.

[Sobs]

Lani: Come here. I come from a long line of huggers.

[Both chuckle]

[Phone beeps]

Paulina: Oh, let me guess, your man wants you home.

Lani: Something like that. And I think you earned that glass of wine.

Paulina: Oh, hoo, oh. Oh, yes.

Abe: Oh, you have some mad baking skills, my dear. I mean, you know what? I can’t believe you made a pie that fast.

[Chuckles] Oh, you know what? This table is not ready. Candles, I need candles and, oh, music–

Chanel: On it.

Abe: Oh, no, no, no. You gotta be exhausted. Let me–

Chanel: No way, I’m into it now. Your job is to get the romantic playlist going.

Abe: Okay, thank you.

Chanel: Oh, but there is one thing.

Abe: Sure, name it.

Chanel: If you don’t mind, I’d like to hang out for a little bit so I can see the look on mama’s face when she gets here.

Abe: Well, there’s nothing I’d like more.

Ej: Mm, you have to admit this beats a growler of locally brewed swill, doesn’t it?

Nicole: Really? Rafe again. I thought that defeated the whole purpose of this dinner.

Ej: You’re quite right. We did agree to put rafe and samantha in the review mirror and so we shall.

Ava: [Chuckles]

Rafe: Ah.

Nicole: [Sighs]

Julie: Doug would never hurt me.

Kayla: Julie…

Julie: Well, it doesn’t make any sense, kayla. I was getting a drink of water, I just turned away for a second. The man is so weak, he can barely walk. How did he leap up, grab a tray, hit me so hard on the head that I passed out?

Kayla: You know, when tripp and I were taking care of him after he collapsed, he woke up and suddenly, almost violently grabbed tripp’s arm. We were amazed at his strength. You know, sometimes in cases like this–

Julie: He’s not a case. He’s my husband. And he doesn’t have dementia and he didn’t do this.

Kayla: There was no one else in the room.

Marlena: Except marlena.

Marlena: You know, as a professional, I’m–I’m trained to be objective but… when it comes to our sweet doug, oh, I find this heartbreaking.

John: I’m sure it is. So you wanna tell me what happened?

Marlena: I did, I told you.

John: I mean, why did you leave your office and go to doug’s room? You said you wanted to go to your office because you were fuzzy on the details. You wanted to listen to the recording of the session to see if it would jog your memory. Did it?

Marlena: It did.

John: Okay, what is it? What did you learn?

Marlena: I learned that doug is more of a threat to julie than I had thought.

John: More of a threat? In what way?

Marlena: He said he wanted to kill her. On the outside, I looked fine.

Nicole: Well, fancy meeting you here. Hi.

Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, we were gonna go to the pub–

Ej: Mm, nothing like a good burger and beer, hm?

Ava: Ej dimera, you remember me?

Ej: How could I forget? One of my most notorious clients. You’re looking well. Still very beautiful.

Ava: I heard that you were in pretty bad shape for quite a while. Looks like you’ve made a full recovery.

Ej: I am much better now.

Rafe: So you two are out celebrating, huh? Business must be good.

Ej: Business? This is pure pleasure.

Paulina: Ooh, walking in high heels should be an olympic sport. Oh! [Chuckles] Well what’s this– mmm, something smells delicious. So what’s the occasion?

Abe: Well, I got inspired and thought it would fun to make all your favorite dishes. We have braised short ribs with red wine sauce, oven roasted potatoes, sauteed wild mushrooms. For dessert, the piece de resistance, homemade key lime pie.

Paulina: Key lime pie. Did you say key lime pie?

Abe: Yeah, I did.

Paulina: Who told you that was my favorite?

Abe: It’s not?

Pauline: I hate key lime pie.

Marlena: That’s why I went racing to doug’s room. And if I hadn’t gotten there when I did–

John: You really think doug would’ve killed julie? This is hard to process.

Marlena: I know. I believe that doug has lost his mind.

John: Mm.

Marlena: I think he’s gone around the bend.

John: Oh, baby. Doug also told me something that upset me as well.

Marlena: Oh, what was that?

John: Earlier he said that– that you had tried to kill him.

Marlena: Why would he say such a thing? He–he’s tried to kill julie. Poor julie, she’s spent her whole life loving this man and it’s come to this. It’s just–it’s tragic.

John: Hey.

Kayla: Well, doug is finally resting. I’m gonna take julie for an x-ray just to make sure everything’s all right.

Julie: I don’t need an x-ray. I’m just so worried about doug.

Marlena: We all are.

Julie: Marlena, I know what you thought you saw, but you are wrong. And I will shout it from the, from the rooftops. My darling would never attack me.

Doug: No, it was not me. I did not hurt julie. It was him. Please, god. Please, don’t let him hurt julie anymore. Please, please, god.

Marlena: Julie, I know how difficult this is to accept.

Julie: Because he didn’t do it and you keep accusing him over and over again when he told you he was innocent. You’re all frightening him, all of you. How can you? How can you?

Marlena: Julie, I’m so sorry, but you need to face the truth. I know how painful this is for you. How painful it is for all us who love doug so much. But in my professional opinion, doug has become a danger to himself and to others. And so it, it needs to be my recommendation that doug– that doug be committed to bayview.

Ben: We really shouldn’t have bought this much stuff in new orleans, babe. I’d have carried you across the threshold but I think I threw my back out coming up the stairs.

Ciara: Well, how many chances do you have to get canned jambalaya and mardi gras beads? And besides that whole threshold business, that’s just a silly tradition. We are home. We are here in our own place. We’re married. We’re married babe. And we have tons of cool memories of our first trip together. That is all that I really want.

Tripp: I wouldn’t worry about it, I mean your free samples went like hotcakes.

Chanel: Hot enough for people to pay money for them?

Chad: So you want abby to be your grandma?

Johnny: Well, not in real life, but…

Chad: Oh, right. So like it’s a–like a–a film director role play little thingy.

Chad: Uh-huh. And like you said, a whole genre is gonna be easier to sell so better investments?

Johnny: You must’ve read my mind. Grandpa roman and lucas have already agreed to put money into my movie. And you’ve been really supportive of this project, so I was thinking maybe–

Chad: Yup, I would love to hear your pitch.

Johnny: Great. I’m still working on getting some storyboards together, but they won’t show what abby can do as an actress.

Abigail: I am not sure.

Johnny: Look, I can see that you guys still need some time to talk. Make up your minds. But I have a working draft of the script if you wanna take a look at it.

Allie: So new orleans is a good place to honeymoon?

Ciara: Oh my god, it’s the best. And my mom and dad really loved it there, so that made it all the more special. Oh my god, allie, it was everything i could’ve wanted in a honeymoon. Except…

Allie: Well, honestly, I kinda get it. Especially now. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I love henry with all my heart, but people are not kidding when they say having a kid changes your entire life. After everything you and ben have been through, I think you guys deserve to have time to just be newlyweds. You know, be free to do whatever you want. Like, are you gonna wanna keep your motorcycle when you have a baby to think of?

Ciara: Yeah, that’s what ben said.

Allie: See, he just wants you all to himself for a little while.

Ben: So you really don’t even know what’s in allie’s drink, huh?

John: Well, I just stepped out to find kayla. Doug woke up a few minutes ago, but he’s saying some very strange things.

Chad: Your–it’s your job? You’re not seriously thinking about doing this. Are you?

Julie: It has to be the medication. It’s making him paranoid. Once the drugs wear off, he’ll know that isn’t true. He’ll know–he knows marlena loves him.

John: I reminded him of that.

Julie: And what did he say?

John: Julie, he just got really upset that I didn’t believe him–that’s why I’m trying to find marlena just to take a look at him.

Ciara: No, and you shouldn’t be worried because you are an amazing mother and henry is so loved by so many people. And I’ve tried convincing ben that his problem was a father who beat him. Not that he has evil in his genes. I told him that she would be an amazing dad, but what if I can’t convince him? What if he never changes his mind? What if he doesn’t ever wanna have kids with me?

Tripp: So you’re asking me that if you and ciara had a baby–

Ben: Would our kid potentially be mentally ill like I was? I mean, could he end up homicidal?

Tripp: Ben, there’s not a homicidal gene, okay? You can’t pass something like that on to your children. But–but if you committed those crimes when you’re in a psychotic state–

Abigail: And like you said, I’ve already been on leave of absence for four months. It’s run smoothly without me. I think it would continue to do so for a little while longer.

Ciara: It never even occurred to me that he would.

Ciara: No, yeah, no, we can’t go down that route.

Allie: Why not?

Ciara: Well, think about it. We would have to find an adoption agency that doesn’t mind that the adoptive father used to be a serial killer.

Allie: No, you don’t have to go through an agency. Just hire a lawyer. Yeah, when I was pregnant with henry, I was going to do an open adoption. So I would know everything about the adoptive parents. I mean, you and ben could do the same thing. You could probably even find someone in town and then they would know that ben is not that person anymore. And you would know everything about the birth parents and ben wouldn’t have to worry about his genes at all.

Ciara: You know, that never occurred to me. I know that ben and i would love any baby. No matter if it was biologically ours or not. I just, allie, I hate that he thinks that he’s cursed somehow. It really just breaks my heart, you know?

Allie: I know.

Ben: So you’re telling me, that if ciara and I have a kid, he could potentially end up just like me?

Tripp: He or she could inherit your mental illness, yeah. But it’s also entirely possible they wouldn’T.

Ben: There’s something else you might not know. My sister, she wasn’t right either.

Tripp: There is still no way to predict, okay? Like, look I’m sorry, man. I wish I could tell you something to make you feel better.

Ben: Well, he did say it was possible that mental illness could be genetic, but you’re right, he couldn’t exactly answer my question.

Ciara: But I think I know who can. Marlena.

Ben: Dr. Evans. I thought you just said, no doctor can tell us how our baby would turn out.

Ciara: Yeah, but maybe she can give you some advice, tell you who to talk to. She’s a therapist, ben, and you guys have a really great relationship. And when it comes to helping people, she always knows exactly what to do.

Lucas: Special event? A reunion of sorts. Really? Did sami come back to you? I didn’t think she’d be that stupid.

Allie: Hmm. This is stupid good. Am I keeping you up?

Chanel: I’m just really tired. It’s hard to get a good night’s sleep when the bed keeps rocking like you’re shooting the rapids or something.

Allie: So, johnny finally wore you down, huh? Was it worth the wait?

[Line ringing]

[Phone rings]

John: Yeah, john black.

Johnny: Hey, grandpa. Is grandma there?

[Ominous chords]

John: Yeah, she is, but she’s not feeling that well. And she’s–she’s in our room resting.

[Uneasy music]

 

Demon marlena: Doug, seems like you’ve been a bit of a tattletale. I think we’ll just have to do something about that, huh? Of course, family and friends will be…ha…devastated. But they’ll think you died of natural causes.

John: Look, johnny. If you’re calling to talk to grandma about, uh… about your movie, we–we had that discussion, and we have decided that… that we’re going to pass on investing in it.

Johnny: Uh, I mean, I know you’re not thrilled with the story I want to tell. But does she feel the same way?

John: Yeah, I’m speaking for both of us. You know what, johnny, I’m going to tell you the same thing I told allie. This really isn’t a good idea. I mean, just to say that, uh, the memories of that time are–are painful would be a gross understatement.

Johnny: Yeah, but maybe confronting the memories could be a good way of exorcising them.

John: Was that supposed to be a joke?

Johnny: No.

John: Look, kiddo, I’m sure you think demonic possession is big box office here, but what happened to your grandma, it was horrific, it was painful, and it needs to stay private. So if and when you decide to make this movie here, you’re going to leave that part out.

Johnny: Sorry, but grandma’s possession is the only part I’m leaving in.

Chanel: You have a dirty mind, horton–that’s one of the things I like best about you.

Allie: You’re the one sharing details about your sex life.

Chanel: I shared details about my lack of sleep. Johnny and I didn’t have sex last night.

Allie: But you said…

Chanel: I said the bed kept rocking. Don’t you remember? Your evil twin made me watch “the exorcist” last night. And as you know, I’m very sensitive, highly suggestible–

Allie: Yes, a delicate flower.

Chanel: Every time I close my eyes, I just–I kept dreaming that I was that girl in the movie. And that the devil… was coming after me.

[Machinery beeping]

Tripp: Morning.

Julie: Where’s kayla?

Tripp: She had an emergency, so I’m going to be checking on your husband.

Julie: He did not have a good night.

Tripp: And neither did you. Right?

Julie: I’m all right.

Tripp: Mrs. Williams, I’m going to be here a few minutes. Maybe you’d like to walk up and down the corridor or go out and get some air?

Julie: I can’t leave, but thank you. And I don’t believe I thanked you for the kindness that you showed us yesterday.

Tripp: You didn’t have to. I’m sure it was very upsetting.

Julie: I suppose I was naive. I thought marlena could help doug right away. But… after he saw marlena, everything got worse.

Marlena: You’ll never win– never!

Demon marlena: No, doug has to die. He knows too much.

Marlena: No!

John: Doc. Sweetheart, what’s wrong? Is olay better than your clean beauty?

Allie: It’s like johnny is so obsessed with making this movie, he doesn’t see that it’s gonna freak out every single person in our family. He thinks he’s an “auteur.” I think he’s a jerk.

Chanel: He’s going to upset more than just his family.

Allie: Well, yeah, I mean, I don’t think the good people of salem are gonna be thrilled about it either.

Chanel: No, I’m not talking about people.

Allie: Are you talking about–

Chanel: The devil. Doesn’t he get that making a movie like this about the devil is just begging for trouble?

Allie: What kind of trouble?

Chanel: I read about that movie before I went to bed. And when they were making it, the set burned down, the actresses who played the mother and the daughter– they both got burned. The crew, they kept getting sick. And people who saw it, they had heart attacks, and some women even had had miscarriages.

Allie: No wonder you had nightmares.

Chanel: Like I said, you don’t go messing with the devil if you don’t want him messing with you back.

Allie: I didn’t know you were superstitious.

Chanel: Why do you think I went into business with you? You’re my good luck charm.

Allie: No, I’m just the one with the donut recipe.

Chanel: That too.

Allie: So, um, you think you’re going to talk johnny out of making this movie?

Chanel: What is the point? He’s just as stubborn as you are. And besides, I like how passionate he is.

Allie: Are we still talking about his movie, or are we talking about the way he feels about you?

Chanel: I thought you said you were okay with me seeing him.

Allie: I am.

Chanel: Okay, you say that. But every time I bring him up, you get all weird. So I’m beginning to wonder if you really meant it.

Abigail: Well, you don’t seem very happy.

Johnny: Uh, just spoke to grandpa john. He said that he and grandma won’t be investing in my movie.

Abigail: I’m sorry. What’s the movie about?

Johnny: Will wrote this a couple of years ago.

Abigail: Oh! “Sami brady story,” huh?

Johnny: It’s just a working title.

Abigail: Well, it definitely won’t be dull. Um… will…

[Laughs] He didn’t happen to write anything about–

Johnny: Your affair with my dad? While he was engaged to my mother? As a matter of fact, he did.

Ej: No, samantha is not back in salem…[Sighs] Not that it’s any of your concern.

Lucas: Not my concern? She’s the mother of my children. She’s also my friend.

Ej: Hmm. Have you heard from her? Has allie?

Lucas: No.

Ej: Neither has johnny. Doesn’t that indicate to you that she’s not particularly interested in being allie and johnny’s mother? Or your little friend?

Lucas: I just find it hard to believe that she’s not keeping in touch with anyone.

Ej: Believe it. She left town with her tail between her legs.

Lucas: No, she wouldn’t do that–that’s not her style. She wouldn’t run away.

Ej: Mm. No, you’re right, she never has before. But it seems, as shameless as samantha has always been, after the last set of revelations, she finally realized how completely she had embarrassed herself–that, in your arms, she had reached, so to speak, the bottom of the barrel.

Lucas: You smug son of a bitch.

Ej: You loser.

Lucas: It’s not how sami saw it.

Ej: [Scoffs] Oh, you better watch what you say–you’re very close to making me angry, and trust me, you don’t want that.

John: Doc. Sweetheart, what’s going on? You okay? You all right?

Marlena: I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. I just…oh, I had the most…horrible nightmare.

John: It’s over, it’s over. Can you tell me about it? My nunormal?

Kate: Hey there.

Philip: Mom.

Kate: Mm. Bad time?

Philip: No. No, it’s okay. Uh, what’s going on? Is everything all right?

Kate: Yes, everything’s all right–I mean, a mother can’t visit her son without him asking what’s wrong?

Philip: Not this mother.

Kate: Ah. Ha ha. What does that mean?

Philip: Well, this mother, and that would be you, is a very busy woman with a big life. So for her to just come over and visit her son for a casual visit…

Kate: Okay. All right. It’s not just a casual visit. I’m just feeling some concern for my children today.

Philip: Mom, if this is about me and chloe…

Kate: No, it’s not you and chloe–I do have other children, you know, philip.

Philip: Okay. So if it’s not about me… and I doubt it’s about austin and billie, or cassie and rex. ‘Cause they’re doing fine as far as I know. So narrowing it down, I’d say you’re worried about lucas.

Kate: Yes, of course, I’m worried about lucas. Aren’t you?

Philip: No.

Kate: You’re his brother, philip. Lucas is suffering. How could you not be concerned about him? I mean, he is in so much pain. He’s so sad, mopey, and all over sami disappearing to god knows where.

Philip: Okay, you want my take? Lucas is a grown man. Why don’t we respect his right to be sad and mopey and just stay the hell out of it?

Kate: [Huffs]

Lucas: Take your best shot, dimera, go ahead.

Roman: Hey. Hey, two choices. Get out or sit down.

Lucas: It’s all right, roman, I’ll go–I got things to do anyway.

Ej: Like what, water your plants, get back to your knitting?

Lucas: Just tell johnny that I’ve set things in motion, all right?

Ej: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Lucas: What, you didn’t hear? I’m investing in his movie.

Ej: You little worm.

Lucas: Yeah, “the sami brady story.” I don’t want to spoil it for you, though, but you’ll be surprised who your wife’s real love interest is.

Abigail: So, um, the affair. Did will write about that in detail?

Johnny: Actually, it’s the most cinematic sequence in the script, yeah.

Abigail: Really?

Johnny: Very little dialogue. Just my mother going about her life, you know, planning a wedding, completely unaware that anything was even wrong.

Abigail: And–

Johnny: And it’s intercut with some rather striking visuals.

Abigail: “Discreet” visuals.

Johnny: There’s a long shower montage.

Abigail: Oh god. Oh…

Johnny: Yeah, there’s a lotta steam, but I don’t know that I’d call it discreet. The way that will described my dad’s naked body, it’s almost like he had a thing for his stepfather. A little inappropriate, if you ask me.

Abigail: Okay, well, uh, can’t wait for the premiere. I’ll bring the whole family.

Johnny: Abigail, I’m cutting the whole storyline. There won’t be anything about you and my dad.

Abigail: Oh, my–ohh. Oh, thank god. That was just–that’s not my proudest moment.

Johnny: Not to worry.

Abigail: Okay.

Johnny: And with will’s blessing, I’ve begun rewriting the script. I’m going to focus on the darkest, most dramatic thing that’s ever happened to my family when my grandma was possessed by the devil.

Allie: Of course, I meant it. Listen, I told you what worried me about him. That it was going to be a hit it and quit it thing. But you’re a big girl. And if that’s okay with you, then it’s fine by me.

Chanel: Well, if he was how you say he was, then I’d say he’s changed.

Allie: Really?

Chanel: Really.

Allie: Well, that’s good. And he is my brother, and I do love him. I want you both to be happy. I want you to spend many more nights together watching many more scary movies.

Chanel: No, no. I have to find a way to distract him from that or else I won’t be getting any sleep.

Allie: Actually, I didn’t sleep much last night either.

Chanel: You and tripp?

Tripp: Yeah, his vitals are good and his condition is stable.

Julie: He really had a terrible night. He tossed and turned.

Tripp: I will talk to kayla about increasing the dosage of the sedative they gave him. But try not to worry. Agitation is a fairly common side effect for dementia.

Julie: My husband does not have dementia.

Tripp: I’m sorry, I should be more careful with my words. I’m not making a diagnosis. His cognitive status is still being evaluated, you know, so we’ll do some more tests and see what the data tells us.

Julie: I don’t need to see data. I know if I pray for my husband, he will get better.

Tripp: I’m not questioning the power of prayer. I’ve read more than one study that a positive attitude can result in significant benefits in a patient’s prognosis.

Julie: Do you really believe everything has a scientific explanation?

John: It’s okay. It’s all right. So what was the dream about?

Marlena: I can’t remember.

John: It had to be a doozy. You’re still shaking, baby.

Marlena: Well, I think it had–I think it had something to do with doug.

John: That makes sense. I know how worried you are about him.

Marlena: Yeah.

John: Yeah.

Marlena: It’s just that everything’s been going so fast. It’s all–it’s all a blur. I can’t–I can’t quite figure it out. I was talking to doug… and then he was on the ground, and…julie was there.

John: We’re thinking it might be his heart.

Marlena: Oh. Well, after–after tripp and kayla stabilized him, I… I wanted to check on him just to…see that he was all right. And…I wanted to make him feel better. And I don’t remember exactly what I said to him, but I…I think I made him feel worse.

John: How could you do that?

Marlena: I don’t know. I don’t know.

Woo! You are busy…

Kate: Okay. Well, obviously I shouldn’t have come here to talk to you about this. So you can just get back to whatever you were doing, and I won’t bother you again.

Philip: Mom. Mom– mom, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Look, I’m just–I’m kind of sensitive to you interfering in our lives.

Kate: I do it because I care. My children are the most important things to me in my life, and I just hate seeing lucas so unhappy… pining away for sami who has broken his heart once again.

Philip: I do–I tried to help lucas with sami. You know that. And even though ej’s done with sami, she obviously doesn’t seem to want to get back with lucas. So game over. He needs to move on.

Kate: Oh yeah. Well, that’s easy for you to say.

Philip: You know… you might stop obsessing about lucas’s love life and your kids’ love life if you had a love life of your own.

Kate: [Huffs]

Ej: Can you believe the nerve of that son of a bitch? First, he sleeps with my wife, and now he’s giving money to my son for some cinematic pipe dream.

Roman: Lucas isn’t the only one.

Ej: Et tu, roman?

Johnny: So what do you remember about my grandma being possessed?

Abigail: Oh, not much really. I was just a kid.

Johnny: But weren’t people talking about it?

Abigail: I mean, there were whispers about it here and there but no one really wanted to talk about it very much.

Johnny: Yeah. Yeah, I’m getting that.

Allie: Yeah, tripp did spend the night, but that’s not why I didn’t get any sleep, so… I’m dealing with a horror movie of my own–it’s “the teething of toddler henry.”

Chanel: I thought he already teethed.

Allie: Well, they don’t get all their teeth at once, so… poor guy, he was up most of the night, but fortunately, tripp was there. He actually got up with him at 5:00 this morning so I could come here and bake donuts.

Chanel: What a sweetie.

Allie: Yeah, you don’t even know the half of it. This man offered to come over every day at that ungodly hour until the nanny gets there at 7:00.

Chanel: Yeah, I know we keep rough hours, but I’m really happy you have someone who wants to take care of you.

Allie: Yeah, he’s pretty incredible. I really, really care about him.

Chanel: But…

Allie: I didn’t say but.

Chanel: You didn’t have to. You want to talk about it?

Tripp: Mrs. Williams, I’m sorry if I seemed clinical. It’s very clear how much you you love your husband and how important your faith is to you.

Julie: Just answer the question. Do you really believe there’s a scientific explanation for everything?

Tripp: Yes, I do. But I don’t think that faith and science are mutually exclusive. You know, the more I learn about how the body works, the more I’m convinced that life itself is a miracle.

Julie: There are more things in heaven and earth.

Tripp: A lot more. But saying that I think there is a scientific explanation doesn’t mean we have it yet. Like, I was talking to allie about this last night. Her brother johnny has a script. He says it’s a true story about something that happened right here in salem.

Julie: A lot of things have happened in salem.

Tripp: It’s about dr. Evans being possessed by the devil.

Julie: Oh, that.

Tripp: Do you remember what happened?

Julie: Well, doug and i weren’t in town at the time. I’ve heard the stories.

Tripp: And do you believe the stories are true?

John: I know you did everything you could to help doug–I can’t imagine you doing or saying anything that would hurt him.

Marlena: I love doug.

John: Yeah.

Marlena: No, I don’t think that I would.

John: You know what I think? I’m thinking that–I’m thinking that you’re working a little bit too hard. I think that you’re always taking care of everybody else except yourself, so maybe you need to just shut it down and take a day off.

Marlena: No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Doing nothing would drive me crazy. No, I…I need to figure this out, figure out what’s wrong.

John: Yeah, well, I was also thinking if your memory’s a little fuzzy, you recorded your session with me. Is there any way you might’ve recorded your session with doug?

Marlena: I did record it! I did. I’ve got to go listen to it.

John: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Right now?

Marlena: Yes. Yes. If I’m going to be able to help doug, I’ve gotta go do it right now.

John: I figure there’s no way I’m gonna to stop you from doing this–at least let me drive you to the hospital.

Marlena: No, no, you don’t need to do that.

John: Yes, I do, because i want to see doug and julie anyway for myself, okay?

Marlena: All right. Okay. I’ll just get dressed. I’m so glad to be doing something.

John: Right.

[Uneasy music]

 

Philip: Must’ve been good for your ego, roman pursuing you like that?

Kate: Oh…well, I mean, he didn’t exactly pursue me. He just let me know that when I was ready, or if I was ever ready, that he will–he will be there.

Philip: But you still didn’t answer my question. So I’ll put it another way. If roman is so appreciative of you, and since you put it into the context of, you know, it being a restart to your love life…why aren’t you two together?

Kate: Aha. Because love is risky. And I don’t want to take that risk. You know, I…I just went through something where I was tremendously hurt. I was humiliated, and I think I’m just going to concentrate on my family and my work for a while. And yet…

Philip: And yet?

Kate: Oh, I–there’s just something…something about him. His little mischievous smile. He has such a big heart. The way he stands up to people. I’ll always admire that.

Roman: I am not about to tell one of my grandkids no when they’re following a dream.

Ej: That dream is puerile. His place is at dimera, working for me.

Roman: Whew. Ej, look… I don’t mean this as criticism, all right, just a real question. Do you ever think about how stupid you are? Look, if you want a surefire way to get johnny completely out of your life, then force him to do something he doesn’t want to. And, yeah, sneer at the most important thing in his life.

Ej: Thanks for the counsel. Was it your great parenting that made samantha so grounded, so stable?

Roman: Oh, I am so sorry that butting in makes you feel so uneasy.

Ej: You’re wasting your money, roman. He’s just like his mother. He’s making grandiose plans for a movie that he talks and talks and talks about. A movie he’ll abandon the second there’s actual work involved.

Roman: Ej, look. I know you’re angry with sami. Do you ever stop to think that maybe you’re taking that out on johnny?

Ej: No. I’m trying to help my son grow up, and you’re indulging him just like you always indulged your tramp daughter.

Roman: Oh, wow. You obviously came here for a fight, didn’t you? But you know what they say? Be careful what you wish for, because I’m going to tell you something right now–you keep talking like that, you’re damn well gonna get one.

Johnny: So I know I can raise the money. See, even though grandpa john was turning me down about investing, he told allie that the whole thing was true. Now tell me that a documented story about a possessed grandma is not marketable.

Abigail: Yeah. But why do you not see that your family might see the movie as exploitative? I mean, what’s the phrase, “sell your own grandmother”?

Johnny: What I don’t see is why everybody’s so offended by it. I mean, possession is nothing to be ashamed of.

Abigail: What?

Johnny: She didn’t seek out the devil, she didn’t upload a profile to a demonic dating website.

Abigail: Right. But just because it wasn’t her fault doesn’t mean she wants there to be a movie made about it. And how does allie feel about it?

Johnny: Good. I hope. I asked her to play my mother.

Abigail: Aren’t you going to use actors?

Johnny: Lots of great directors use real people for their movies all the time.

Abigail: Oh, actors aren’t real people?

Johnny: You know what I mean. “The florida project.” “Nomadland.” “The sound of metal.” This is a salem story. I want people who are really connected to this town. People who are connected to the people who had to go through this unspeakable horror.

Allie: I really wish my mom would answer the texts.

Chanel: Okay. You can try to change the subject all you want, horton, but you know what? Maybe I’ll just ask tripp what you’re keeping from me.

Allie: All right, I will tell you. Tripp is so great, and I really, really like him. And the sex is…

Chanel: Okay! I get it. He’s great. Okay. So what is the problem?

Allie: He told me that he loved me the other day… and I didn’t say it back.

Julie: Let’s say in my life experience, the devil takes many forms. Gabi hernandez being one of them.

Tripp: I’m sorry.

Julie: Never mind. You keep your faith in science. I’ll keep mine in god. And I’m sure between the two of us, we can do doug some good.

Tripp: Amen.

Tripp: I’m off my shift now. So how about on my way out, I stop by the chapel and say a prayer for your husband?

Julie: I think it’s a wonderful idea.

John: All right, now, I am going to go check in on doug. I want you not to push yourself too much. Okay?

Marlena: Yeah. I think–I think I’ll feel better when I hear what’s on that tape. It all just happened so fast. I must’ve missed something. Yeah. Please give doug and julie my love, hmm?

John: [Quietly] I will.

Marlena: [Softly] Thanks. Shingles? Oh… you mean bill.

Marlena: Now I would like to start off by discussing some of your recent moments of cognitive dissonance. I understand that you’ve been mixing up people’s names?

Doug: Well, apparently, I– I confused you with vivian alamain. Sorry about that.

Marlena: It’s okay. I’ll find some way to forgive you for that.

[Doug chuckling]

Doug: I feel worse really about forgetting tom and alice. I mean, how could I ever forget them? They meant so much to me.

Marlena: I know that. Having a–having a lapse in memory doesn’t mean they’re any less meaningful to you. So please don’t feel guilty about it.

Doug: Well, I do feel guilty. I groped paulina price, for pete’s sake. It’s completely inappropriate.

Marlena: Do you have any idea why you did that?

Doug: No. It just–it just horrified julie. All this has been so hard on her.

Marlena: Julie told me that you locked her in the freezer by accident.

Doug: That was no accident. I locked that bitch in there on purpose.

John: So how’s it going?

Julie: Well, he’s heavily sedated, but so agitated. I really don’t think he’s getting the rest he needs.

John: And I don’t think you are either. I know you were here all night.

Julie: Where else would I be?

John: Julie, doug’s going to need you to be strong for him–why don’t you go home and get some sleep?

Julie: Sleep is impossible. I could use a shower. I could use a change of clothes.

John: Hey, now, that sounds like a plan. So why don’t you go do that, and I’m just going to stay right here with doug. Okay?

Julie: Oh, thank you, john. I won’t be long.

John: No, no, no, you take your time, take your time.

Julie: My darling. And you are my darling.

[Machinery beeping]

[John signs]

Abigail: So, if you’re going to get allie to play your mom, you’re going to get your mom to play marlena?

Johnny: Can you imagine my mother on a shoot? She’d be like margo channing on steroids.

Abigail: Who?

Johnny: Besides, no one knows where she is.

Abigail: Well, then you might have to get a real actress.

Johnny: Tough role. Gotta be strong but vulnerable. Really beautiful. I’ve got it.

Abigail: Cate blanchett?

Johnny: You.

Chanel: I wish I could relate. Johnny and I are nowhere near the “I love you” stage. We’re still wooing.

Allie: Wooing?

Chanel: His words. Not mine. It’s like going back to the age of chivalry.

Allie: And if he wins your heart, are you going to tie your handkerchief to the end of his lance?

Chanel: I’ve never heard of that. Oh, that was like a joke. An age of chivalry joke.

Allie: Sorry, I can’t help it–it’s just the thought of johnny as some pure-hearted white knight seems so ludicrous to me.

Chanel: Okay, you did it again.

Allie: Did what?

Chanel: We were talking about you and tripp, and you got me off subject. So what is going on? You actually have a pure-hearted knight who babysits. Now, what is the problem?

Allie: I was telling kayla I know tripp is so great, and we are serious about each other. But I just–I don’t think that I’m ready. You know, like, when I tell someone that I love them for the very first time, I want to make sure that I really mean it.

Chanel: So? What do you think is holding you back?

Tripp: What are you two talking about?

Allie: We were just talking about chanel getting wooed.

Tripp: Well, I guess we’re all pretty lucky.

Abigail: I mean that those things–I mean, that’s not untrue, but I just–I don’t know anything about being obsessed. I-I… well, um… I guess as someone who had did, I do know a thing or two about someone taking over your life and who you are, but–

Johnny: So does this mean you’ll do it?

Doug: That I locked her in on purpose. You heard that. You heard right. It was the most fun I had all week.

Marlena: I’m sure you don’t mean that. I think you’re just confused.

Doug: No, marlena, you’re the one who’s confused. Ha ha ha. I am not doug. Ha ha ha ha.

Marlena: Of course you’re doug. You’re doug williams. And I’m marlena evans.

Demon doug: I know exactly– exactly who you are. It’s been over 25 years, marlena. But did you really think that I wouldn’t come back for you?

John: We’re all right here for you, buddy. In fact, marlena is in her office right now and is trying to figure out what she’s going to do next.

[Rapid beeping] Whoa, whoa, hold on, hold on, buddy.

Doug: Marlena.

Demon doug: And you have to stop pretending that you don’t remember me. It hurts my feelings after everything we shared. All those nights together at your penthouse… desecrating st. Luke’S. Remember when john caught us red-handed?

Marlena: Oh, my god.

Demon doug: Not god, marlena. But I’m just as powerful. Which you know better than anyone.

John: That’s right. That’s right, doug. Marlena is trying to help you.
