Ben: [Sighs] Oh. Doug and julie are asking if we want to come over and watch the ball drop.

Ciara: Seriously? I thought that old married couples went to bed as soon as the sun went down.

Ben: Your grandparents know how to party.

Ciara: Yeah, well, with what happened there on christmas eve, I’m kind of done with all the excitement for now.

Ben: So you’re saying you want us to be the old married couple?

Ciara: What I’m saying is, I want to stay here and watch the ball drop with you and our baby.

Chanel: Hi.

Johnny: Oh, hey.

Chanel: I thought you were working out.

Johnny: Oh yeah, I–I stopped halfway through all of a sudden, I just felt like I got hit by a bus.

Chanel: Oh, no, are you feeling sick?

Johnny: Eh, it might just be jet lag, or maybe it’s the after effects of going ten rounds with il diavolo.

Chanel: As dramatic as that sounds, you’re probably just fighting a cold.

Johnny: Yeah, well, definitely fighting something. Look, I don’t think I’m gonna be very much fun tonight. Maybe you should just go ahead without me.

Chanel: Like hell I will.

Gabi: Sami, what’s–what’s wrong?

Sami: I just got proof that ej is the one who kidnapped me.

Lucas: Please, don’t look at me like that. I know what you both are thinking. “How can our grandson do something so nuts?” I know. I know. I get it. What I want you both try to understand is, I feel unworthy of being a horton after what I did to sami. I need you to understand why I did it. I had no choice. I did it for love.

Allie: You did what for love, dad?

Tripp: Yeah, I’m–I’m just getting off shift now. Yes, yes, dad, I feel fine. No, thank you for the invite, but allie and i are just gonna have a nice, quiet new year’s together. Yeah, yeah, I’m just grateful I’m not going into the new year stuck in the coma unit in jan spears’ bed. Yeah, no, I’ll be happy if my first encounter with the devil is my last.

Marlena: Oh, tripp, going down?

Marlena: Gosh, I’m sorry that I startled you.

Tripp: Oh, no, it’s okay. It’s good to see you knowing that it’s you.

Marlena: Yes, it’s me. Look, I’m glad I ran into you. I–I’d like to apologize.

Tripp: You don’t need to do that, okay? I know that everything that happened wasn’t your fault. It was him.

Marlena: Yeah, him.

Tripp: And I have to admit that when I first heard the stories about this happening to you before, I–I didn’t believe them.

Marlena: Well, I’m not sure I would have either. Kind of a lot to take in, you know, devil possession and battle between good and evil not exactly based in science.

Tripp: Well, you’ve certainly made a believer out of me.

Both: Hey.

Jake: You don’t look like you’re getting ready for a big night out.

Ben: Oh, you’re looking at a big night out.

Jake: Come on, it’s new year’s eve and the last new year’s eve you’re not gonna have to search for a babysitter,

Ciara: Yeah, well, it’s not like I can really go out partying.

Jake: But you can still have fun, can’t you? So come on, losers, get out of that bed. Come out with me and gabi.

Gabi: Ej kidnapped you?

Sami: My husband, the man who’s supposed to love me and our children.

Gabi: Oh, why would he do that?

Sami: Revenge. Get back at me for hurting him. Who knows?

Gabi: I wish I could say he’s not capable of doing that, but he’s ej dimera, the most morally bankrupt human being on this planet.

Sami: Yeah, that’s right. Okay, let me have it. Don’t hold back.

Gabi: Look, I get it. I’ve done some terrible things in my life, but I would never hurt the people that I love. I mean, what–what kind of man terrorizes the mother of his children?

Lucas: Hey, allie, I didn’t see you there.

Allie: Yeah, I was just closing up at the bakery. We were getting some complaints about a sad guy walking around talking to inanimate objects.

Lucas: Were you really?

Allie: No, I’m kidding. But you do look pretty beat up. Is this about mom?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, it is.

Allie: I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but you know, when you’re talking to yourself in public…

Lucas: I wasn’t talking to myself. Thank you very much. I was talking to my grandparents.

Allie: You were saying something about love, but you sounded guilty.

Lucas: Guilty?

Allie: Yeah, like you were confessing something. Look, just instead of pouring your soul out to great-grandpa and great-grandma, why don’t you just talk to me about it.

Johnny: No, no, why–why–why should your new year’s have to be ruined just because I’m not feeling well?

Chanel: Well, then I’ll be lying right next to you. I made vows, remember?

Chanel: Still, I knew what I was saying. “I took you, giovanni roman dimera, to be my lawfully wedded husband,” and I’m pretty sure “in sickness and in health” was a part of that, right?

Johnny: It was.

Chanel: Hmm-hmm. Well, then when you’re sick, you’re stuck with me, and I am stuck with you.

Ciara: Tempting, but I’m sorry, jake, we’re out.

Jake: You sure?

Ben: We’re sure.

Jake: You two are about as fun as a case of scabies, you know that?

Ciara: Yeah, well, in my defense, a few days ago, the devil did try to steal my unborn baby.

Jake: I’m sorry, what?

Ben: Oh, it’s news to you that marlena evans was possessed by the devil?

Jake: No, no, no, I heard about all that, but I didn’t know she wanted to take your kid.

Ben: Good times, huh?

Jake: Man, what the hell does she want with your child, anyway?

Marlena: I know that what happened was beyond my control, but people were hurt. Tripp: But we’re all fine now. And it’s nothing compared to what you went through. I’m really glad to see you on the other side. I know how worried allie was about you.

Marlena: Thanks for saying that, and I’m glad she has such a nice young man in her life.

John: And I couldn’t agree with that more.

Tripp: Hey, john. How you doing?

John: Tripp, good to see you up and about.

Tripp: Yeah, yeah. I have to say that it really means a lot that you both approve of my relationship with allie.

John: Well, it’s kind of like what doc said, we’re just very grateful that she has you in her life.

Tripp: Listen, well, I am very lucky that she is in mine.

Marlena: We won’t keep you from her, except to say happy new year, tripp.

John: Yeah, happy new year, kid.

Tripp: Happy new year to you both. You deserve it.

[Elevator dings]

John: Yes, we do.

Lucas: Well, you know, I–I feel guilty, because I’m the one who had to talk to your mom. I had to get her to accept the fact that ej is the one who kidnapped her.

Allie: Right, that couldn’t have been easy for her.

Lucas: No, it wasn’T. It broke her heart. And despite all the pain that ej’s put her through, she’s–she’s not ready to give up on him yet.

Allie: I just don’t get that. I mean, she’s put up with so much miss treatment from him, but to kidnap her and to keep her locked away against her will for all that time, it’s– it’s just cruel, sadistic really. I don’t know about mom, but i will never forgive him for it.

Gabi: How did you find out it was ej who took you?

Sami: Chad, he found this record of a financial transaction ej had used dimera funds to pay this guy, jason smith, who was his accomplice after telling me that he had no idea who that guy was, had never heard of him in his entire life.

Gabi: Pretty dumb to leave a paper trail.

Sami: Yeah, ej’s not stupid. He’s just arrogant. He didn’t think he was gonna get caught. I’m the one who’s dumb.

Gabi: No, don’t say that.

Sami: I believed him when he told me that I was the love of his life. I believed him.

Gabi: Well, maybe that isn’t a lie.

Sami: The worst part is…

Gabi: What? Go on.

Sami: The worst part of it, he’s still the love of mine.

Gabi: You still feel that way?

Sami: So–so if ej and i are over, what am I supposed to do with the rest of my life? We hit the bike trails every weekend

Gabi: Look, I’m probably the last person that should be giving any relationship advice. I mean, I’ve always dated the wrong kind of men, men who didn’t respect me, who lied and cheated. It took me years, but I finally learned my lesson.

Sami: And jake treats you right?

Gabi: Yeah, yes, he does. He respects me. And more importantly, it doesn’t matter what happens between him and I. I learned that I will never settle for a guy who does not see me as his equal.

Sami: Good for you. Neither will I.

Gabi: Well, I don’t–i don’t think there’s a guy out there who’s your equal, but you definitely deserve better than ej dimera. I mean, he’s–the guy is hateful. I mean, the way he ousted jake from dimera. It was disgusting. Snake.

Sami: So not a fan?

Gabi: No, not a fan, but I am one of your biggest fans.

Sami: Thank you. Gabi, that’s really nice of you. That means a lot.

Gabi: Yeah, you know, you really helped me through some of the roughest times in my life. And I learned how to stand up for myself because of you.

Sami: Well, you are a quick learner.

Gabi: Still got a long way to go, but thank you. I know that we’ve had our differences, but you’re will’s mom. You’re ari’s abuela. I’ll always have your back. Remember that, okay?

Jake: So marlena tricked you into taking her to the cabin so she could steal your child?

Ciara: Mm-hmm. And we still have no idea what she wanted with our baby.

Ben: And frankly, I don’t give a damn. I’m just glad that ciara is okay and the threat of the devil is no more. John and everybody else who loves marlena cast him out.

Ciara: Mm-hmm.

Ben: Mm-hmm.

Ciara: That poor devil never had a chance. Your try to come between us and our baby, you’re gonna get all types of hell. I don’t care who you are.

Jake: Yeah, lucifer didn’t know who he was messing with, right?

Ben: The prince of darkness. That’s no match for my pregnant wife. Look at her.

Ciara: Uh-uh, and he’d better not forget it.

Jake: All right, so I guess that’s a good enough excuse to lie low tonight.

Ben: Yeah, you and gabi are gonna have to celebrate without us, my man.

Jake: We’ll try. Happy new year. Enjoy the evening.

Ciara: Happy new year, jake.

Jake: Oh, and happy new year, baby weston. Can’t wait to meet you. Good night.

Johnny: Tea?

Chanel: Uh-huh, I know you like more of a cappuccino, but it’s good for you.

Johnny: Thank you for taking care of me.

Chanel: You don’t have to thank me. I’m your wife. I do things for you. You do things for me. It’s in the contract.

Johnny: Well, I owe you then, okay?

Chanel: Damn right you do. The next time I’m not feeling well, I expect to be treated like the queen I am.

Johnny: Yes, your majesty.

Chanel: And besides it gives me a good excuse to skip work for the next few days, so…

Johnny: You know, chanel, I can probably manage to avoid my sister well into the new year, but you, you own a business with her, you know? You’re gonna have to talk to her eventually.

Chanel: Yeah, but it doesn’t mean I have to seek it out and not after the way she went at us for getting married.

Johnny: I probably didn’t help things by accusing her of being jealous of wanting you for herself.

Chanel: Yeah, that was awkward.

Johnny: Sorry.

Chanel: You do know that there’s nothing going on between us, right?

Johnny: Yeah, yeah, no, it’s just–

Chanel: Allie and I are just friends, nothing more.

Johnny: Yeah, you know, my sister and I, we–we’ve just been so competitive, you know, since we were babies with toys, friends, our parents’ love, but this one, competing for your heart was a new one. And I’m just not sure allie’s over the fact that she lost.

Allie: I wish they were around long enough for me to get to know them.

Lucas: Me too. They were the best. So everything okay with you and tripp?

Allie: More than okay.

Lucas: Really?

Allie: Yeah.

Lucas: What’s going on?

Allie: Well, remember how you were telling me about trying to save mom from ej?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah.

Allie: I kind of tried to do the same thing with chanel and johnny. When they told me they’d gotten married, I was completely blindsided.

Lucas: So wait, let me guess. You didn’t give them your blessing?

Allie: No, kind of sort of cursed their union.

Lucas: Oof, you cursed their union? That’s not like you; come on.

Allie: Well, it’s not just chanel that I’m worried about. I mean, I don’t want to see johnny get hurt either.

Lucas: No, I get it. I get it. I get it. They’re both young. They haven’t been together that long, but when it comes to matters of the heart, you know, people make their own choices. You don’t agree with those choices, then there’s a chance they’re gonna cut you out of their life.

Allie: Even if it’s bad choices?

Lucas: Yeah, even if it’s bad. I mean, johnny’s your brother, and she’s your best friend. I would hate to see you lose both of them. As a professional bull-rider

Sami: You know, ej had every right to be mad at me. I cheated on him with lucas.

Gabi: I’m sorry, but did he have the right to put your life in danger to make you suffer like he did?

Sami: I thought we were beyond all of that.

Gabi: Doesn’t surprise me. You know, I just hope that one day you will be grateful that you finally walked away from that sadistic creep.

Sami: Yeah, and I am. You know, a part of me is already. It’s just that… a part of me misses him.

Gabi: And that’s–sami, that’s okay, girl. Cry it out. There’s no shame in that.

Sami: Yes, there is. I hate it. I hate that I miss him after what he did to me. It just makes me feel weak.

Gabi: Hey, come on. You are a lot of things, sami, but weak is not one of them. So yes, you’re going to mourn as long as you need to, and then you’re gonna pick yourself up, and you’re gonna figure out what you really want in life.

Allie: I know I have to make peace with johnny and chanel, but what are you going to do about mom?

Lucas: Well, there’s some things–

Tripp: Hey, found you.

Allie: Oh, hey, you.

Tripp: Hey.

Allie: Hi.

Lucas: Hey, tripp, how you doing?

Tripp: Hey, how you doing, lucas?

Lucas: Good to see you. So what’s going on? You guys got big plans for tonight or what?

Tripp: Well, nicole has offered to babysit, and so we’re gonna get dressed up and see what kind of trouble we can find.

Allie: Yeah, what about you, dad? Got any plans tonight?

Lucas: You mean for new year’s eve? Yeah, I got plans. I got–I got big plans. I’m gonna go home and watch tv and snuggle under a blanket. It’s gonna be great. You guys go out and be young and have a great time.

Allie: Okay, well, happy new year’s, dad. I love you. And be easy on yourself. You don’t have anything to feel guilty about.

Lucas: Thank you. I love you too.

Johnny: So I guess we have managed to alienate ourselves from both of our families.

Chanel: Well, it wouldn’t be a first time for me.

Johnny: Me neither.

Chanel: Although my mom, she did start a wedding registry at three different department stores. She’s already bought half the stuff herself. Pretty soon we’re going to be swimming in crystal and china.

Johnny: Well, that’s nice of her, I guess, right?

Chanel: Buying gifts is just her way of saying she’s sorry.

Johnny: I knew I’d win her over eventually. What do you think it was, my–my charm or just my good looks?

Chanel: I think it was probably your good looks, ’cause you’re not that charming.

Johnny: Hey, hey, I’m sick, remember? I don’t want you to catch what I’ve got.

Chanel: If what you got is contagious, then I’m pretty sure I’ve already got it after what we did this morning.

Johnny: That is an excellent point.

Chanel: What? What now?

Johnny: I’m sorry. My nose is stuffed. I can’t–I can only breathe through my mouth. I’m sorry.

Chanel: Okay, see, this is what I mean about the whole charm thing. No. A stuffy nose is not that sexy.

Johnny: Yeah, I hear you. Well, let me tell you what. How about we, you and I…

Chanel: Mm-hmm.

Johnny: Go ahead and start our own holiday traditions.

Chanel: Oh, and you don’t want sharing the flu to be part of it?

Johnny: Well, we are both here together, so I was thinking maybe we could do what married couples do when they are in bed…

Chanel: Oh.

Johnny: Watch a movie.

[Laughs]

[Crowd cheering over television]

Ben: Babe, come on. We can watch the house buying shows any time. This is a bowl game. It’s the fourth quarter.

Ciara: Oh, and what game is this between two teams that you’ve never cared before–

Ben: Babe, that– that is not the point.

Ciara: Oh, yes, you’re right. You are correct. The point is, I’m pregnant with your child. So I get one and a half votes, baby, and that means that ceramic countertops and floor plans win.

Ben: Fine. But we are switching during commercials.

Ciara: We’re streaming it, baby. There are no commercials on peacock.

[Knock at door]

You have no idea what you’re getting into, so come over after–

Ciara: Give me the remote.

[Laughs] You’re so annoying.

Ben: Dr. Evans, hey. John.

John: Ben.

Marlena: I hope we’re not interrupting.

Ben: Never, no. Come on in, please.

Marlena: Hi, ciara. Happy new year.

Ciara: Well, I’m sorry. It’s just that I haven’t seen you since…

Marlena: Christmas eve.

Ciara: Yeah.

Ben: How are you feeling?

Marlena: A little tired, a little tired, but I’m so grateful for all the love I have around me.

Ciara: And we are very grateful to have you back.

Marlena: Thank you. I appreciate that. Look, I know there’s been a lot going on. I just wanted to come over here and ask for your forgiveness.

Ben: You don’t have to do that, dr. Evans.

Marlena: Well, after all that’s happened maybe–maybe there’s something I can do to–I don’t know, to make it up. Make it easier for you?

Ben: Really. It’s–it’s–it’s not–

Ciara: Actually, well, there is one thing you can do.

Marlena: All right.

Ciara: Would you mind telling me why the devil wanted our baby? I love my hardwood floors.

Marlena: Oh, the baby.

John: Doc, if this–if this is too hard for you, you don’t have to do it right now.

Marlena: I want to.

John: Okay.

Marlena: I can’t keep running away from it.

Marlena: As I said, I want to. The thing is, I– I really can’T. I– I don’t remember what happened.

Ben: You don’t remember anything?

Marlena: No, emotions, images, but no real memories. Ciara, I–I don’t know why the devil was after your baby. I’m sorry.

Ciara: It’s all right. I–I understand.

Marlena: But if I–if I do remember anything at all, you’ll be the first person I come to.

Ben: You do not have to apologize. You have done so much for me.

Ciara: For us. I mean, without you, we wouldn’t be together. And we wouldn’t have a little family.

Marlena: John told me that I was encouraging the two of you to have a baby.

Ciara: Yeah, yeah, well, I’m–I’m pretty sure we would’ve done it anyway, but…

Ben: I mean, I–I had my concerns, but ciara made me see how amazing it could be. And she convinced me that we could be good parents.

Ciara: And we’re gonna have a beautiful life with this little one.

Marlena: Ahh, yes, you are. I’m so proud of you both.

Ben: It’s good to have you back.

Gabi: Hey, you know, jake and I, we’re gonna have dinner at the bistro tonight. Why don’t you join us?

Sami: Oh, I don’t know if being a third wheel is really good for my mental state right now.

Gabi: All right, I’ll ditch jake.

Sami: What would you say to him?

Gabi: That an old friend needs me. He’ll understand.

Sami: No, that is seriously the nicest thing ever, but I cannot allow it. It is new year’s eve, gabi, and I am irish and incredibly superstitious. So it is your job to get a great kiss at midnight, ’cause it gives you good luck the whole year round. It’s a complicated thing. So please be with a man that you love and the man that loves you.

Gabi: Thanks. Well, what about you?

Sami: Me? I have big plans. I’m gonna go home to my mother’s, which is an amazing thing to say at my age. And I’m going to cry all night into a pillow on new year’s eve.

[Laughs]

Chanel: Oh, no, tarantino, you are not picking the movie this time.

Johnny: What? Why not? I have great taste.

Chanel: Yeah, if you like zombies eating people’s faces or demons dragging teenagers to hell.

Johnny: I wasn’t gonna choose a horror movie for new year’s eve. I chose a classic.

Chanel: Yeah, that’s what you called, “vampire dingoes from outer space.”

Johnny: First of all, australian indie horror is underrated. Second of all, this is not that. I chose something with heart, with romance. Just give it a chance, please. For your husband.

Chanel: Oh, you’re pulling the husband card now are we?

Johnny: “In sickness and in health.”

Chanel: And I’m–I’m pretty sure that “until death do us part” is also part of those vows.

Johnny: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Chanel: Yeah, well, that’s what might happen if this movie that you’re picking gives me nightmares.

Johnny: Okay, there will be no nightmares. I promise. Now…

[Indistinct chatter on tv]

Chanel: [Sobbing] She kept the painting.

Johnny: She did.

Chanel: And he thought she ghosted him at the empire state building. She really never stopped loving him.

Johnny: Mm-hmm, I told you.

Chanel: So beautiful.

Johnny: “An affair to remember” is a classic. Cary grant, deborah kerr. What more can I say? What– what are you doing?

Chanel: I don’t want to wait till next year to watch it again.

Johnny: You want to watch it again right now?

Chanel: Mm-hmm.

[Knock at door] Who’s that?

Johnny: I don’t–come in.

Allie: Hi.

Johnny: Did you guys come here to let us know what horrible people we are and how our marriage is doomed?

Allie: No, I came here to apologize.

Chanel: Really?

Allie: Yeah, when you told me you guys were married, I–I was just caught off guard, and I reacted really badly.

Johnny: Did tripp put you up to this?

Tripp: It wasn’t me. She said she couldn’t enjoy our night unless we stopped here first.

Allie: I don’t want to lose you, either of you. And if I could have a do-over, I would go back. I’d take it all back, and I would just say congratulations. And I’m hoping that as the sister of the groom and the best friend of the bride you guys would do me the honor of ringing in the new year with us, and we drink to your happiness.

[ Echoing ]

Chanel: On behalf of my husband, we accept your apology and your booze.

Allie: Well, I am very happy to hear that.

Tripp: See, I told you it would be okay. So what do you say? You guys want to hang with us tonight?

Chanel: Johnny’s not feeling too great.

Allie: Oh, what’s wrong?

Johnny: Just a little rundown. I feel like I might be fighting something, but I think we can probably manage to rally. Ooh, franciacorta. Nice.

Allie: Italian sparkling wine seemed appropriate considering we missed your wedding in italy.

Chanel: That’s very thoughtful of you, horton.

Allie: Yeah, well, you deserve only the best, dupree.

Johnny: Finally something that my twin and I can agree on. Now, maybe you two could run downstairs, see if you can find a couple of glasses for this fine bottle of spirit.

Tripp: Absolutely.

Johnny: And I will hop in the shower, and we’ll meet you downstairs for the countdown at midnight.

Tripp: Sounds like a plan.

Johnny: Allie, thanks.

Gabi: When they say seven courses, they really mean it.

Jake: You know, I’d only like name half of them if I had to. Was it weird that they served sorbet in the middle of the meal?

Gabi: I guess so, yeah. Hey, did you know I was gonna ditch you tonight for sami?

Jake: Oh, really? You were gonna ditch me on new year’s?

Gabi: Not that I wanted to. She’s just going through something.

Jake: Oh, you mean like finding out that her husband’s the one who kidnapped her?

Gabi: Yeah, I mean, she’s devastated. Apparently she still loves the guy.

Jake: Yeah, well, I don’t know sami the way you do, but I’d venture to guess that she’s gonna land on her feet.

Gabi: Apparently we can’t say the same thing about her husband.

Jake: What happened?

Gabi: According to this text I just got from shin, ej dimera out as co-ceo dimera enterprises.

Jake: Shin cut ej loose?

Gabi: Uh-huh.

Jake: Ha-ha!

Gabi: Ej, is out. Happy new year to us.

[Acoustic guitar music]

Lucas: Well, that’s good news. At least I cost ej his job. That’s something, I guess. Oh, well. No sense hanging around here for new year’S. Not gonna matter that much to me anyway. Sami, hey, what are you doing here?

Sami: Chad found proof that ej is the one who kidnapped me.

Lucas: Oh. Oh, man, I’m–I’m sorry. What–what does that mean?

Sami: It means I am through with ej for real this time, and I am never going back to him.

Lucas: Well, I can’t say I’m sorry to hear that. What, did you come in here for a drink?

Sami: No, I came to tell you about ej, not just that I’m finished with him but that I want to begin again with you.

John: Okay, so according to dr. Taylor, you’re not supposed to have any champagne, so I bought some strawberries and whipped cream in the fridge for a backup.

Marlena: Oh, that sounds heavenly.

John: All right. Let me grab them, and I’ll be right back. Don’t go away.

Marlena: I–I’ll be fine if you’re gone for a minute.

John: Yeah, but will I?

Marlena: Oh, think there’s time to catch “new year’s eve with carson daily.”

[Television static crackling]

John: Yeah, that thing’s been doing that a lot lately, doc. Got to have a glitch somewhere, but you know what? Every time I monkey around with the wire back here it seems to–ah, there it is. Maggie: Oh, I’m so sorry that I couldn’t join you, but I wanted to stay close to victor.

Jennifer: Yes, of course. Is there any word on philip?

Maggie: No, I’m afraid not. But we’re doing our best to stay positive and– I noticed you took down the tree.

Jennifer: Yeah. We were up early, so we thought we would just pack it all up for next year. And this sweet angel, do you remember her?

Maggie: Oh. Yes. Oh, my goodness.

Jack: It was laura’s and, you know, when we heard about what happened to julie’s angel, my angel of a wife decided to give it right back to julie.

Maggie: What a lovely gesture.

Jennifer: Listen, I’m just so glad that– that marlena is okay and– oh, let me get you something to eat.

Maggie: No, no, really, really, I’m not here for that. I’d like to talk to you, jack.

Xander: Something could be really wrong.

Chad: I thought the kids were supposed to be doing that, cleaning up the puzzle.

Abigail: Yeah, well, it was obviously a rush job.

Chad: Yeah, now they’re on a playdate with jackson and rosie. I saw the nanny pick them up.

Abigail: Hmm, no wonder it’s so quiet around here.

Chad: I do miss hearing them laughing and playing. You know what I don’t miss? Is ej crowing about all his brilliant business decisions.

Abigail: Oh, come on, surely you miss his delightful company at dinner.

Chad: Not in the least. It has been downright peaceful and homey since he landed himself in jail on christmas eve. And a little bonus– it’s been an entire week since we had to listen to his stupid accent.

Abigail: [Laughs]

Ej: Oh, you don’t like my accent?

Sami: Lucas, we need to talk.

Lucas: All right, what is it? Is it your mom? Is she okay?

Sami: No, my mother is fine and devil-free.

Lucas: Well, then, what’s wrong?

Sami: I went to the police station. I went to see that guy jason smith, the son of a bitch who held me captive after I had been kidnapped.

Lucas: Well, that wasn’t a smart move. You need to stay clear of that guy.

Sami: After everything that I have been through, I deserve to look him in the face and make him tell me why he did it.

Lucas: And what did he say?

Sami: He said that you’re the one who hired him.

[Tense music]

[Soft orchestration]

Lucas: Wait, wait, what, me? No, no, why would I hire someone to kidnap you?

Sami: You tell me.

Lucas: There’s nothing to tell, it’s insane.

Sami: Don’t try to deny it. Lucas, you’re the one who chloroformed me outside of rafe’s house, you dragged me to some cabin in wisconsin, and then you hired that animal to keep me there.

Lucas: Wait a minute, sami, listen to me, okay?

Sami: And then now you’re trying to blame ej? The hell’s the matter with you, lucas? How could you do something like that? What is wrong with you?

Lucas: Listen, I love you. I love you more than anybody I’ve ever loved in my life.

Sami: So you decided to keep me hostage in the middle of nowhere?

Lucas: I had to do it, I had to keep you away from ej.

Sami: Oh, my god.

Lucas: I never meant to hurt you.

Sami: Lucas, you are keeping me by myself away from everyone that I love and you thought that wasn’t gonna hurt me? I thought I was never gonna see my children again.

Lucas: I’m sorry, okay? I was desperate.

Sami: Well, rafe is on his way here now. And he’s gonna arrest you. And then you’re really gonna know what desperate feels like.

Lucas: Wait a minute, wait a minute. You and me, we had something really good, sami.

Sami: You and me? Lucas, there is no you and me. I want you out of my life forever. I hate you, lucas. I hate you. Lucas? Hello?

Lucas: What? I’m sorry, what’d you say?

Sami: Where did you just go? I told you that I went to see that jason guy and you totally checked out on me.

Chad: What are you doing here, ej?

Ej: I live here.

Chad: Yeah, last I heard you were arrested for kidnapping. Shouldn’t you be in a cage?

Abigail: Did sami drop the charges?

Ej: She didn’T. But the courts are backed up during the holidays and the judge finally got around to granting me bail.

Chad: Why would any judge grant you bail?

Ej: Isn’t it obvious?

Chad: You bribed him.

Ej: I was set free because I’m innocent. Not only are these kidnapping charges against me completely bogus, I was framed.

Chad: What are you talking about? Who would frame you?

Ej: Oh, there’s a long list of suspects. And at the top of it is you.

[Dramatic music]

Abigail: That’s a ridiculous accusation. Why would chad set you up?

Ej: Why else? So he can run dimera.

Chad: I already run dimera.

Ej: We run dimera together– an arrangement that you detest. And so putting me in prison would pave the way for you to have the position all to yourself.

Chad: Yeah, but I don’t need to cook up some legal scheme to do it. I’ll just keep doing my job better than you.

Ej: Then perhaps your motive is more personal. I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but you didn’t seem all too pleased that I cast myself as john black opposite abigail’s marlena.

Abigail: Do you really think this is about johnny’s movie, which might not even happen? Given everything that marlena just went through, why would anyone move forward making a movie about her being possessed?

Chad: Any more stupid theories, ej?

Ej: Well, damn it, somebody set me up. And there’s no shortage of other suspects.

Abigail: Like who?

Ej: Well, there’s our brother, jake, there’s rafe hernandez… and then there’s lucas horton.

Lucas: I’m sorry I just spaced out a little, I was, you know, thinking about my brother.

Sami: Oh, lucas, you must be so worried about him. Any sign of him?

Lucas: No, no, not since they found his leg. But, you know, getting back to what you were saying earlier, you know, you said that you went to see the guy who held you prisoner?

Sami: Yeah, yeah, I went to the police station and I saw him in jail. I thought if he was lying about ej being the one who hired him, he wouldn’t be able to just say that right to my face. But he stuck to his story.

Lucas: Well, you know, what do you expect? Ej’s been known to make irrational decisions from time to time, right?

Sami: I suppose.

Lucas: But now that you have proof about what your husband did, does it change the way you feel about him? Are you ready to give up on him now?

Nicole: Hey, father.

Eric: I’m sure you weren’t expecting this.

Nicole: Come in. Actually, I just read about it. Looks like you took your vows in the nick of time, huh?

Eric: I’m just glad I could be there for my mom when she needed me most.

Nicole: I’m glad marlena’s okay. But, you know, even if I hadn’t read about your return to the priesthood, it really wouldn’t surprise me because it is your true calling.

Eric: I spent a lot of time debating whether it was the right choice, but after I made it, I felt peace with it. Not that our marriage was the wrong choice.

Nicole: Our problems were not because of your devotion to god. Besides, I take great comfort in the fact that I ruined you for all other women.

Jack: So xander asked you to put in a good word for gwen.

Maggie: Well, I know it may seem insufficient considering everything that she’s done.

Jack: Willfully so.

Maggie: Look, I hate that gwen caused abigail so much pain. And I’m not here to make excuses for her. I came here because of xander. I care about him. And I can’t help but feel responsible for the broken heart that he suffered through.

Jennifer: So this is about sarah?

Maggie: Yes. My daughter. My daughter hurt him badly. I mean, honestly, I don’t understand why she did what she did. And I can’t defend it. She seemed like she loved him. But… if gwen reconciling with her father would make xander happy, and I can make that happen, then I suppose I would feel like I was repaying sarah’s debt.

Gwen: How do I do this? How do I get you off of the sarah track?

Xander: [Grunts] Morning.

Gwen: Morning.

Xander: [Sighs]

Gwen: Did you sleep all right?

Xander: Oh, like the dead. Yeah, I mean, this room, it cost a fortune but I can’t complain about the thread count.

Gwen: Yeah. Well, it’s a good thing that you’re rested because we’re probably gonna be up very late watching the ball drop and drinking lots and lots of champagne.

Xander: New year’s day. Time to let go of the old and embrace the new.

Gwen: I wholeheartedly agree.

Xander: So is that what you meant when you said you need to get me off the sarah track?

[Tense music]

Ej: And how long will that be? Damn it, chad, I’m innocent. Why the hell should i back away from dimera?

Chad: Did I not just explain it?

Ej: I won’t do it. I don’t like it.

Chad: Well, whether or not you like it is completely irrelevant. What is relevant is you need to do what’s best for the company and right now that is keeping a low profile. And me being the face of dimera.

Lucas: Are you seriously asking me why your husband didn’t kidnap you sooner?

Sami: I’m just saying it doesn’t make any sense. I mean, he had already busted me for cheating, you had just left, he had me all alone in the mansion. Why didn’t he chloroform me right there and then?

Lucas: There are plenty of reasons, I’m sure.

Sami: Such as?

Lucas: Well, off the top of my head, you know, maybe he didn’t decide to kidnap you until after you left.

Sami: You mean it was a spur of the moment idea?

Lucas: Well, you said yourself you were going to see gabi at rafe’s house. You know, to try to persuade her to let you back into the mansion. So that’s probably when ej started stewing. You know, showed up at her house and put the rag over your mouth and boom, lights out. Who else could it have been?

Gwen: Look, all I’m saying is that before maggie got sober, I’m sure that her addiction caused plenty of trust issues between her and sarah. I’m sure it damaged their relationship unbeknownst to her.

Xander: I mean, I’ve never seen anything like what you’re describing. They’ve always been very close and maggie’s been a good friend to me–and you.

Gwen: What has she done for me?

Xander: I told you. She agreed to put in a good word with jack.

Gwen: And apparently that was an epic fail, wasn’t it? Unless I missed the note that he left at the front desk? “Oh, dear gwen, all is forgiven. Love, dad.”

Xander: Well, to be fair, maggie never actually told me how that went. Maybe I should go and talk to her, yeah?

Gwen: So you can ask her about sarah?

Xander: Yeah. Look… the sooner I figure out what’s going on, the sooner you and I can… let go of the old and embrace the new.

Maggie: Well, it was lovely seeing you both.

Jennifer: Yes, aunt maggie. I love you so much. Give our best to victor. We’ll be praying for you guys.

Jennifer: And I do agree with my aunt maggie. The holidays are really a time for families to come together. But I also understand it’s a really big decision, so I want you to know that I support you no matter what.

Jack: The question is… will abigail?

Chad: Well, are you gonna do the right thing for dimera? Ej, come on!

Ej: Fine, fine! I’ll keep a low profile, for now. I’ll work behind the scenes.

Chad: Okay, good. Well, I’m glad you’re on board.

Ej: For now. But make no mistake, I have no intention of slinking off into the shadows. As soon as I clear my name, I’ll be back behind my desk.

Chad: I am sure you will. But for now, I’m gonna have to go into the office and update shin.

Abigail: Okay. I’m gonna come with you. I want to stop by my parents’.

Chad: Ej… happy new year.

Ej: [Sighs]

Lucas: Ej did this, sami. I know you don’t want to think about it, I know you don’t belie it, but he did the motive and the means.

[Phone rings]

Sami: It’s ej.

Lucas: What are you doing? Don’t get it.

Sami: Well, I– ej, I thought you were in jail.

Ej: I was just released on bail. It’s good to hear your voice, samantha.

Sami: Why are you calling me?

Ej: I need to see you. Can you come by the house?

Sami: I’ll be right there.

[Line disconnects]

Lucas: Be right where? Where are you going? Don’T. He’s gonna feed you a bunch of lies, you know it.

Sami: I just want to hear what he has to say.

Lucas: She doesn’t believe that ej’s guilty. I gotta put the final nail in the coffin. But how? Ah. Bingo.

Jack: How do you think abigail will feel about me reconciling with gwen?

Jennifer: I have no idea, jack. And the only person who can answer that question is abigail.

Maggie: Hello. I’m really glad you’re here. I just came from talking to jack. Put that good word in that you asked me to.

Xander: I ran into rex the other day and he told me they’re not together anymore.

Maggie: What? They’re not?

Xander: In fact, he told me they never were. They didn’t even leave town together.

Maggie: Wait a minute, I can’t believe this.

Xander: That’s why I wanted to talk to you. Didn’t you tell me that you were receiving texts from sarah saying how happy she was overseas with rex?

Maggie: Yes, I had been, but–hmm. You know, I haven’t heard from her in quite a while.

Xander: She didn’t text you on christmas?

Maggie: No. I texted her, but I didn’t get a reply. I just– wow, I just assumed that she was busy or that she was someplace where there was no cell signal. But now, I mean– oh, xander, this is– this is very strange. And this is very worrisome. Oh, god. [Breathes sharply] What could’ve happened? Why didn’t sarah tell me?

Ej: You can do this, ej. Just tell samantha the truth. She loves you. She’ll believe you.

[Doorbell rings]

Ej: Nicole!

Nicole: Don’t be too excited.

Ej: Sorry, I–

Nicole: You were expecting someone else.

Ej: I was just surprised, that’s all.

Nicole: I saw on the news that you made bail so I just wanted to come by and see how you were doing.

Ej: Very well now that I’m on the road to clearing my name.

Sami: What the hell is she doing here?

Chad: Don’t worry, shin, I’ve made it very clear that ej needs to stay away from dimera. Well, he’s not happy about it, but he understands it’s the right thing to do. Absolutely. I actually have a meeting with the pr team here in a few minutes. So… yes, I’ll keep you updated. Great. Thanks.

[Suspenseful music]

Abigail: You’re right, gwen did hurt me. And, honestly, you know, I’d be happy if I never saw her again. But if I forbid you from seeing her, then that hurts you and I don’t want to do that. So if you want to rebuild your relationship with gwen, I’m not gonna get in your way.

Jennifer: How’s it going over here?

Jack: Well, my very gracious and understanding daughter has given me her blessing to try to repair my relationship with her sister.

Jennifer: You really okay with that, honey?

Abigail: I mean, we’re moving into a new year and I just wanna do whatever I can to make it a really good one for us.

Jennifer: Amen to that.

Jack: Amen to that. Well, I’ll tell you what, I’m gonna try and give her a call right now. And we’ll just see what we can do, okay?

Jennifer: Wait, wait, jack, but before you do that… I have some really big news that is going to have a big impact on all of our lives.

Xander: Look, why don’t you try and call sarah now, see if you can get to the bottom of it?

Maggie: Yeah, I’ll try, yes, but, you know, in the last couple of weeks it’s just gone to voicemail.

[Phone beeps]

[Line ringing] Oh. Come on.

Automated voice: We’re sorry, the number you have reached is not in service.

Xander: What? What happened?

Automated voice: Try your call again.

Maggie: Oh, my god.

Xander: Maggie, what? I can tell she didn’t answer, but why didn’t you leave a message?

Maggie: Because it, um… it didn’t go to voicemail. I got a recording. It said, “this number is no longer in service.”

Ej: Nicole just stopped by to see how I was doing.

Nicole: Should’ve locked the door behind me. Kept all the riffraff out.

Sami: Will you please ask her to leave?

Ej: Nicole can hear what I have to say. Which is I’m not the one who kidnapped you, samantha. I was framed.

Sami: Really? Who do you think framed you?

Ej: Isn’t it obvious? It was your ex-husband, lucas.

Sami: [Scoffs]

Lucas: Sorry, mom, if you didn’t want me using your password, you shouldn’t have written it down in your planner. I have no choice, I have to do this. It’s the only way I can make sure that ej goes down for sami’s kidnapping.

[Dramatic music]

Brady: Thank you for getting the charges dropped.

Belle: Well, don’t thank me. They shouldn’t have been filed in the first place.

Brady: Yeah. Well, they were, and I spent christmas in a jail cell. So thank you.

Belle: Well, then you should also thank chloe. She’s the one who got victor and kate to drop the declaration of philip’s death.

Brady: Yeah. It’s the first time, I think, chloe has ever been successful changing either one of their minds.

Belle: Yeah. And without that declaration, the da really didn’t have a case. Everything was circumstantial.

Brady: Yeah.

Belle: So you’re in the clear.

Brady: I’m in the clear. It’s all I wanted for christmas this year was to get out of jail. It’s a little christmas miracle I guess.

Eric: I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this for a second time.

John: Ah, don’t worry about me. We just have to focus on casting this demon out so we can get your mother back to us.

Eric: Is there any luck so far?

John: I’ve read scripture on casting out the devil, but he has such a strong hold on her. And he doesn’t– he doesn’t fight fair. He doesn’t come right at you. He surrounds you.

Eric: John, you must be exhausted.

John: I can’t afford to be, eric. I just needed to take a moment here just to try to recharge a little bit.

Eric: Well, you have backup now. And I happen to be well-suited for the job.

[Dramatic music]

Kayla: I still can’t believe that tripp was the one that was in that hospital bed and not jan. I mean, thank god he’s all right.

Steve: Thank god. Well, shawn is taking jan back to statesville where she belongs. So things are looking up.

Kayla: Well, not quite. We still have to get the devil out of marlena.

Steve: John said he’s gonna try an exorcism today.

Kayla: Is there anything we can do to help?

Steve: I guess all we can do is pray and have faith that john and family can get marlena back.

John: You know, when you told me last night you went back to the priesthood, it just– it just seemed to me that god must’ve had a hand in this, that he was giving us just what we need to get your mother back just when we need it.

Eric: I agree. It was god’s will.

John: So why now?

Eric: Well, when everything was blowing up with nicole, there was something– something she said that really hit home. She said when I decided to take the collar off a few years ago, it never really changed who I was. So when I went back to the congo, I inquired to the church. Eric: For something to be a mortal sin, it needs to be committed with knowledge and full awareness. Kristen had drugged me.

Eric: I think it’s a good sign that we’re doing this on christmas day, the day that god sent down his only begotten son to save us. And I know that allie is not alone when she’s thinking of all the good things that mom has done for us. So now it’s time for us all to come together in her hour of need.

[Dramatic music]

Demon marlena: Well, well, well, the gang’s all here. Even the grandchildren. I suspect johnny is here to do some research for his movie.

Lucas: That angel’s been in my family for generations. Doug and julie must be freaked out. You know, they’re scared of your mom right now.

Sami: Well, they have every reason to be. She’s pretty scary. John keeps reminding me that it’s the thing in her that did this, not her. But it looks a lot like her.

Sami: It’s happened before, you know. I mean, as it turns out, my mother is the devil’s favorite place to go for the holidays.

Lucas: Well, I just didn’t think it would happen again is what I’m saying.

Allie: That’s so sweet. He was up really early, but then he got really sleepy after his big breakfast. So tripp is putting him down for a nap.

Allie: Aww. Well, I got you guys stuff too. I mean, I figured we’d open it all together.

Johnny: You guys want to– you guys want to wait a minute on the–on the presents. Didn’t you get my text? Don’t you want to hear the big news?

Allie: Yeah, but I realized that I already know what it is.

Chanel: You do?

Allie: Yeah. Johnny’s dad kidnapped our mom.

Nicole: Okay. Who would want to set you up for kidnapping sami?

Ej: I’ve made more than a few enemies here in salem. Victor kiriakis blames me for titan’s financial problems. Melinda trask hates me for making her look like a fool in court. And then there’s–

Nicole: Okay. You might want to narrow down your list to one possible name that you can give the police.

Ej: As a matter of fact, I already have.

Sami: John’s been in there for a long time. I hope she hasn’t turned him into a goat or something.

Lucas: Turn him into a goat. You’re wearing out the rug. Come on, sit down for a second. Take a look. Well, so I don’t–I don’t know–I don’t know a lot about exorcisms, but I’ve seen a couple movies about them, you know, and i just know it takes a while. Right?

Sami: Exorcism. You know, my–my mother should be enjoying her christmas with her children and her grandchildren.

Lucas: I know.

Sami: Instead she’s in there battling for her immortal soul. If anyone deserves to be possessed by the devil, it’s me.

Lucas: Would we be able to tell the difference if you were possessed by the devil? Would we be able to decipher that? I’m just kidding. Trying to keep your mind off things. Okay. I’m try and change the subject, that’s all. I know that you’re very scared for your mom right now, but we should probably talk about this ej situation, right?

Sami: No. Lucas, I don’t want to talk about that.

Lucas: What do you mean you don’t want to talk about your very own husband kidnaps you, hold you against your will? Please tell me you’re done with that guy. People everywhere living with

Johnny: I still can’t believe that dad would do that to mom.

Allie: I can.

Allie: What? You saw how he treated her when we were all in rome.

Johnny: Yeah. And then he followed her back here and they got back together.

Allie: And then he found out that she was cheating on him.

Johnny: Well, let’s just agree to disagree. Okay. That’s not the news that we came here to tell you.

Tripp: Okay. Okay, you guys have the floor.

Johnny: Chanel and i got married.

Tripp: Get out.

Johnny: Yes.

Chanel: We’re not just best friends anymore. We’re sisters-in-law.

Abe: Johnny and chanel, are they really married?

Paulina: Oh yeah. I’m trying to make the best of it, but–

Abe: But you’ve heard a lot of far-out stories about the dimera family.

Paulina: Yes, I have. Although I know your–your late wife. She was a dimera. So–so that makes your son theo half-dimera, so–well, there’s obviously some goodness in that gene pool.

Abe: Definitely. Besides, every family has its problems.

Ej: And there’s chad. He wants dimera enterprises all to himself. He makes no secret of that. Jake knows that I organized the campaign to oust him as ceo. Gabi hates me for that and for throwing her out of my house–

Nicole: Okay. I thought you said you narrowed your list down to one name.

Ej: But out of all those people, I don’t think anyone hates me more than rafe does.

Nicole: [Scoffs] Rafe? Oh, don’t be ridiculous. First of all, he would never do that to sami. And second of all, he wouldn’t break the law just to get to you.

Ej: He’s always been jealous of me and it’s even worse now that I’m with you.

Nicole: Rafe?

Ej: Mm-hmm.

Nicole: Jealous? That is patently absurd.

Ej: I disagree.

Nicole: Okay. Well then since we’re sitting here talking about people who hate your guts, what about lucas horton?

Sami: Look, I’ve heard chapter and verse about how you hate ej. I don’t need to hear it anymore. Listen, I have to be here for my mother right now.

Lucas: I know. I get that. Okay. But he–he did kidnap you for weeks and weeks. He held you there and he tortured you. Why would you go back to a guy who tortured you? How’s that going to help your mother?

Sami: We don’t know that it was ej.

Lucas: Yes, we do. Why would the salem pd arrest him? They wouldn’t arrest him for nothing. And please tell me you’re not still fighting the divorce.

Sami: Well, ej doesn’t want a divorce now.

Lucas: He what?

Sami: Yeah, he was just telling me that he–mom.

John: Very impressive. Even shackled to the bed, you have telekinetic powers, but I have god, our father, the son and the holy spirit on my side, not to mention marlena’s love. Shall we begin? Demon marlena: [Screaming]

Sami: No. John, you have to stop. Okay. Please. You have to untie her. This is torture.

Johnny: Samantha, it’s not her. It’s the devil just playing with you. It’s not her.

Sami: John, I can’t stand to see her scream.

Demon marlena: Not so fast, mr. Horton. You and I have to chat alone for a moment.

Ej: You actually think lucas horton has the brains and the nerve to set me up?

Nicole: No. All I said was lucas hates you, not as much as rafe does. I don’t think either one of them would do this to you. I think you’re just grasping at straws.

Ej: I don’t know about that. I didn’t put lucas on my list of suspects because he always seems so ineffectual. But maybe it was him.

Lani: Let’s go.

Paulina: Can I at least wish you a merry christmas?

Eli: Merry christmas, paulina.

Lani: The kids have probably worn doug and julie out by now. We should go pick them up and I still have a lot to do for our christmas dinner. Dad, we’ll–we’ll see you later tonight, right?

Abe: Of course you will.

Paulina: Well, I thought you want to know you have a new brother-in-law.

Allie: So you guys are really married?

Johnny: Yes, we are. Yes.

Allie: When did that happen?

Johnny: While we were in rome. Do you remember that church that mom used to take us to? That little church.

Tripp: I mean, you guys just did throw this at her.

Allie: What do you know about real? Our giovanni here is always the leading man in his own movie. The plot is always the same. It’s just the girl who changes. Okay. They go for romantic strolls by the tiber, and then they walk over to the piazza navona. That’s your regular route. Wasn’t it? And then he takes her to the one trattoria where they know him and he orders for her in italian. Sound familiar? I guess you needed a bigger ending for your movie this time ’cause you married the girl before you broke up with her.

Johnny: Are you done yet? Or you still–okay.

Allie: No, I’m not done. The movie’s over. Okay? You’re back in salem now. What happens when those magic feeling goes away and you’re stuck with a guy who’s bored of being a husband?

Sami: [Crying]

John: Hey. Here you go, kid.

John: Look, I know how hard this is on you and I know how much you hate what I’m doing because I hate it too. But a successful exorcism is the only chance I have of bringing your mother back to you.

Sami: I understand. And I brought grandma carolyn’s rosary, ’cause I wanted to help, but it just so hard. It’s really hard to see her like that.

John: That wasn’t her. That was satan preying on your love of her. He wants you to stop me.

Sami: I just–I love her, you know, that right, john? I love her so much, even though I don’t always show her how much I love her–

John: She understands that. Sweetie, wherever she is right now, she can feel that love.

Sami: Wherever she is?

John: You know–whether you realize it or not, what you’re doing right now is helping her. It’s making her stronger and I need you with me on this right now. I need you to be 100% all in.

Sami: Okay.

John: It says in the bible that, ‘a house divided against itself shall not stand.’ And we’re up against the forces of darkness here, so we–we have to be a united front. All in, samantha.

Nicole: Okay. Just slow down a little bit here. Okay? I don’t really see lucas as the kidnapping type.

Ej: Why not? He pretended to have a brain tumor so he could get close to chloe lane.

Nicole: No, no, no. Sami put him up to that. Because your lovely sister said that she would tell the whole world about sami and lucas if sami didn’t get chloe away from brady.

Ej: What about the fact that lucas almost let samantha receive the death penalty for a murder he committed? He didn’t need prodding from kristen then.

Nicole: Well, lucas finally manned up and stopped the execution.

Ej: With seconds to spare. I’m sorry, but lucas horton is more malicious than you give him credit for.

Lucas: There’s nothing I can do for you. So stop playing games and open up the door.

Demon marlena: No. We’ve got a few things to get settled first.

Lucas: You and me? What do we have to talk about?

Demon marlena: For starters, I know what you did. People think of you as the boring one, but I know what a little bad boy you are.

Lucas: Yeah, I’m so boring that your mind games aren’t going to work on me.

Demon marlena: Really? You see, I know that you’re the one that kidnapped sami and held her captive. That’s not very boring.

Lucas: You don’t know anything about me.

Demon marlena: I know you’re an imbecile and I know that I gave you the idea.

Lucas: Wait a minute. You made me kidnap sami?

Demon marlena: “The devil made me do it”? That’s going to be your defense? I’m sorry to disappoint, but I didn’t make you do it.

Lucas: What the hell did you do?

Demon marlena: Well, I just planted the idea in that little booze soaked brain of yours. The rest of it, you did yourself voluntarily because you couldn’t resist the temptation.

Lucas: Oh, my god.

Demon marlena: Oh, and lucas, if you don’t get me out of here, I’m gonna tell sami everything. Are you tired of clean clothes that just don’t smell clean?

Lani: So chanel ran off to italy and married herself a dimera. That girl knows how to keep life interesting.

Paulina: Mm-hmm. You can say that again.

Lani: Thank you for telling me about chanel and johnny. I will send them a wedding present.

Paulina: Speaking of presents–

Lani: I thought I made it clear to you that I don’t want anything from you.

Paulina: Even if they for my grandchildren?

Nicole: When am I going to learn to keep my big mouth shut? You cannot pin this on lucas

Ej: If it isn’t him, then who is it? Samantha didn’t kidnap herself.

Nicole: Actually, I wouldn’t put it past her.

Ej: Don’t be ridiculous.

Nicole: Well, in case you’re interested, you still haven’t convinced me that it wasn’t you.

Sami: I am with you, john. You have my attention now. I am with you 100% all in.

John: We can do this. You know, we’re not gonna stop until we save her and we’re going to need all the support we can get. We’re going to need it from our kids. We’re going to need it from our friends and especially from the man upstairs.

Sami: Yeah, especially from him. And speaking of our kids, you know what, lucas, maybe you could call–lucas. Where is he?

John: I don’t know. He was right behind us when we left the bedroom.

Demon marlena: All you have to do is untie me and I can make sure that your–your precious sami never knows you kidnapped her. I can do things like that, you know.

Lucas: If I set you free, that means you can do whatever you want to marlena. Sami will hate me. Everybody would.

Demon marlena: Well, everybody’s going to hate you anyway, once they find out that you kidnapped sami and you–you framed– you framed ej.

[Laughs] You’re just– you’re screwed no matter what you do. So why don’t we do this my way? You know what? I’ll make it easy for you. Just–just untie one hand. I’ll do the rest.

[Unsettling music]

Sami: Lucas! Lucas! Lucas, what the hell are you doing? How did olay top expensive creams?

Chanel: I need to talk to allie alone.

Tripp: You want to go take a peek at your nephew?

Johnny: Sure, I do.

Allie: You didn’t hear a word I said, did you?

Chanel: Like I don’t know that johnny’s had girls before me?

Allie: A lot of them.

Chanel: I’m telling you, this is different. Yeah, it was a spur of the moment thing, but it was real.

Allie: Okay. Well, johnny is not the only one who does think spur of the moment, chanel. All right. You remember your what a day and a half as mrs. Xander cook? What was that, five minutes after you got to salem?

Chanel: That was a scam. This is love.

Allie: Are you sure about that?

Johnny: Damn it, allie. I love chanel. Chanel loves me. We got married. Why can’t you just accept that?

Allie: Who cares if I accept it? It’s your life.

Johnny: You’re my sister. I thought you might like to see me happy, but I guess not.

Allie: I do want to see you happy, but I’d also like to see chanel happy and I feel like you’re going to make her miserable.

Johnny: I just–you know what? I had a thought. I’m starting to think that maybe this isn’t about me at all. Maybe you’re just jealous.

Tripp: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Johnny: What do you think it means? It means your girlfriend wants my wife all to herself.

Paulina: It’s kaleidoscopes of pictures of your–your big mama and paw-paw when they were first married. And me and tammy as little girls. You and chanel when you were babies. The whole family.

Abe: That is very thoughtful of you, paulina.

Paulina: Me and tammy had them when we were little and I made one for chanel too.

Lani: My mom made me one. I used to stare at that thing for hours.

Paulina: Sort of a price family tradition.

Lani: I’m sorry. I-I can’t accept that.

Eli: Come on, baby. It’s christmas.

Paulina: Please. Please let me do this for my grandbabies.

Paulina: You are more than welcome.

Nicole: You and I have gone out to dinner several times and we’ve had sex once. I still don’t know who this new ej is and what he’s capable of.

Ej: I told samantha our marriage was over and that I wanted a divorce. She was sobbing–sobbing when I ordered her out of my house. Do you think I’m such a sadist that I also had her kidnapped?

Nicole: Well, when you put it like that, no. No, I don’t think you’re a sadist.

Ej: So you believe me now.

Nicole: Yes.

Ej: Thank you.

Nicole: Don’t thank me yet. We still have to figure out who kidnapped sami or you could be ringing in the new year at statesville.

Lucas: I was on my way out and she loosened the restraints. I didn’t want her to break loose.

Sami: Really? Oh no.

Demon marlena: He’s lying about everything.

John: Heavenly father. I know it says that you never put more on us than we can bear. But this is a lot. I don’t know if I have the strength to see this through, so I need your help, lord. I just need–I need you to give me a sign that it’s your will that doc’s soul will be saved for a second time.

[Knock at door]

Ben: Is that okay?

Ciara: Well, it makes me feel much better knowing that there’s a little angel watching over you two after we leave.

John: Gabriel! I don’t even believe this.

Gabriel: Merry christmas, john. It’s been a long time. Might you be able to extend some hospitality to a weary traveler?

John: Oh, of course! Of course. Where’s my manners? Please, come in, come in.

Gabriel: Thank you.

John: God, you don’t know how good it is to see you.

Gabriel: I have some idea. You didn’t think that I would stay away, did you? Not when you’re going through such a trying time.

John: Gabe, I’m telling you, I have never in my life just felt so helpless and so scared.

Gabriel: I understand. But you must remember that god is always with you, even if you can’t see him.

John: Well, you know, I need god to do more than just see me right now.

Gabriel: I know that you do. I’m not supposed to get involved in people’s affairs, but these circumstances are… extraordinary, to say the least.

John: Oh, marlena is in such terrible trouble. I’m starting to believe that only divine intervention is going to save her.

Gabriel: Then I guess it’s a good thing that I’m here.

John: You can help me find her then, right? Because I don’t have any idea where to start!

Gabriel: Marlena is leaving carnage in her wake wherever she goes, a trail of pain that is pretty easy to follow.

John: Well, that’s easy for you to say. Now, look, gabriel, I know that you’re not supposed to interfere here, but I don’t have time for riddles, so just tell me– me, where’s my wife?

Ben: You’re not laying a finger on my wife. I won’t let you.

Demon marlena: Do you really think you can stop me?

Julie: Stronger together. We’re all going to stop you.

Demon marlena: Is that right, julie?

Julie: Yes! Yeah. ‘Cause there’s no place for you in this house, satan. This house…this house was tom and alice’s home where goodness and love always lived.

Doug: Amen.

Demon marlena: [Laughs] Well, all that goodness and love couldn’t protect your little angel. And it’s not going to protect that little angel, either.

Ciara: You stay away from me. You stay away from my baby!

Demon marlena: Sorry, can’t do that. I always get what I want. And I want that baby.

Belle: Who are you?

Jan as belle: Who am I? Who are you?

Shawn: Wait, hold on, wait. If you’re here, then how can– how can you be there?

Belle: Shawn, I am your wife! Whoever that is in the bed with you isn’t me.

Shawn: No, I don’t understand.

Jan: Oops.

Chad: We got legos, ponies, lego ponies. I am…[Laughs] Pretty sure we got everything on thomas and charlotte’s list.

Abigail: Okay. Well, then I guess we better get them upstairs, get them wrapped before they realize we’ve got a very, very close working relationship with the old santa claus.

Jack: Ah, the mad rush to hide the last-minute gifts for the kids on christmas eve! I remember it well.

Abigail: Dad, what are you doing here?

Jack: Is that any way to greet your wayward father?

Abigail: Oh! Take those. Oh! It’s so good to see you.

Jack: That’s better!

Chad: I thought when you called us you said that you couldn’t get a flight because of the storm.

Jack: Well, yes, yes. There was a storm, and I was looking at spending a very sad christmas in the airport hotel, but luckily, the weather changed, and we were able to catch the first flight out.

Abigail: We?

Jennifer: Merry christmas!

Abigail: Oh, my god!

[Both screaming]

Jack: Merry christmas.

Chad: Merry christmas.

[Overlapping chatter]

Jennifer: Hi, baby. Oh, my gosh. Hi!

Chad: Hi.

[Overlapping chatter, laughter] Hi susan! Honey?

Jan: Awkward!

Shawn: What the hell is this? Belle, I swear, I swear i thought that was you.

Belle: Obviously, but how did this happen?

Shawn: I don’t know. I got a text message. I got a text message to come to this room, and then, and then you–you answered the door.

Jan: No, I opened the door.

Shawn: No. Belle, you saw her, you saw her–she looked exactly like you– exactly!

Oh, I’ll take that as a compliment, although I’m a lot more fun.

Shawn: Belle, belle, I swear, I swear I didn’t know anything about this.

Belle: I don’t understand. After everything that happened with kayla and steve, you didn’t think to check that this was me before you jumped into bed?

Shawn: I thought I was being careful! I was afraid that the devil was going to pull some illusion thing, and then– I even called–I called rafe. Rafe said that you just left the station and that you had a surprise for me for our– for our anniversary, so I came here.

Jan: Spoiler alert, I don’t think that was rafe on the phone. See, as much as I would love to take all of the credit, I had A…partner.

[Eerie off-notes]

Shawn: Oh, my god.

Belle: The devil is working with jan spears.

Steve: When was the last time you saw tripp?

Allie: Last night. He told me he was working an overnight shift, and he was supposed to come meet me this morning.

Steve: But he never showed up?

Allie: No. I mean, I just that maybe he got pulled into some sort of emergency, so I came to check on him.

Steve: You know, I called him a couple of times to see if he wanted to join us for christmas eve, but he never got back to me.

Allie: Okay. Well, have you talked to any of the staff?

Steve: Yeah, I checked with the nurse, and she said that he never clocked out of his night shift.

Allie: But if he never clocked out, then wouldn’t that mean that he’s still here?

Steve: I don’t know. But I know how we can find out.

John: Please, gabe. I really need you. Every day that goes by, I can feel her just being pulled further and further away from me, so please tell me if you know where she is.

Gabriel: If ever there was a time to make an exception, it’s now.

John: Then you do know.

Gabriel: She’s with your friends, doug and julie.

John: She tried to hurt them before. I’ve got to go to them.

Gabriel: No, wait. Take this with you.

John: Saint benedict medal?

Gabriel: Wearing this represents a prayer to invoke god’s blessing through his intercession. It will help protect you and the people you love.

John: “Begone, satan.”

Gabriel: This medal will help you find the strength you need to drive the devil away from your friends.

John: What, you’re not coming with me?

Gabriel: I’m afraid I can’T. This is your battle, but you have defeated this demon before. You are strong enough to do this on your own if you don’t lose faith.

John: Thank you. Thank you for coming, gabe.

Gabriel: God be with you, my friend.

Demon marlena: Get out of my way.

Ben: My wife and my child are the only things that matter to me in this world, and I will fight you with everything in my soul.

Demon marlena: Wow. That’s a very stirring, knight-in-shining-armor speech. Especially coming from somebody with your past.

Ciara: Ben is a wonderful man. And he’s going to be a great father.

Demon marlena: In fact, he’s not. Because, in a moment, I’m going to walk out of here and take you and your baby with me.

Ben: Yeah, you’ll have to kill me first.

Demon marlena: Well, that can be arranged!

Ciara: No–

Doug: Ben, no, no!

Julie: Don’t you hurt him! And if you think for one minute you’re going to walk through this door with this precious girl, you’ve got a big letdown coming.

Demon marlena: I hate this place. I hate this house. It’s so full of history and historical do-gooders all trying to save the world from the devil. What’s your motto? “Save salem”!

Doug: We drove you out on thanksgiving.

Demon marlena: I let that happen. I’ve been so generous with all of you. It’s as though you’ve forgotten who I am.

Julie: Oh, we know exactly who you are.

Demon marlena: Then you’ll recall that I could have killed your husband a while back. And maybe, maybe I will do it this time. Right now, the only person in this room I need alive is you. Lila: Before I was diagnosed, there was nothing

Abigail: What an amazing surprise–I didn’t even know you were coming home.

Jennifer: Almost, almost. I just, I couldn’t wait to get here to spend christmas with my family. So tell me, what’s happening? What’s on the agenda for tonight? I’m ready.

Allie: And you can pull up security footage?

Steve: Yep. Should tell us exactly what time he got here, if and when he left.

Allie: There, there he is. He’s coming through the front entrance.

Steve: 6:55 P.M. That makes sense. He said he had an overnight shift.

Allie: Yeah, he was supposed to get home 7 A.M. This morning.

Steve: All right. Let’s fast-forward. Hang on.

Allie: Why did the screen go blank–did you go too far?

Steve: No, recording’s still playing, but there’s nothing there. It’s like it was erased.

Allie: But why would the hospital erase security footage?

Steve: They wouldn’T. Just go back. Okay. 7:22 P.M. That’s when the recording went blank.

Allie: Okay.

Steve: That is right after I found kayla unconscious in this office after marlena attacked her.

Allie: Are you saying that– that my grandma is the one who erased the tapes?

Steve: Or worse. I think she might have done something to tripp.

Jan: Are the cops really necessary, shawn? Although, they would have been fun back in the hotel room, am I right?

Shawn: Shut up and sit down.

Jan: Yes, sir.

Shawn: Now, you’re gonna sit there until I find a cell available for you.

Jan: Fine by me. I have some delicious memories to keep me occupied.

Belle: Enough of your games. How did you do this, and where is my mother?

Jan: Oh, you mean my new bestie, the prince of darkness?

Belle: Where is she?

Jan: Well, satan doesn’t exactly share her schedule with me, and even if she did, I wouldn’t tell you. After all, I have her to thank for this whole glorious day.

Belle: Oh, shut the hell up!

Shawn: Belle, we’re gonna find your mom, and jan’s gonna pay for what she’s done.

Jan: Oh, please, shawn. Don’t act like you didn’t have any fun. I bet you were surprised by some of belle’s new tricks.

Belle: Oh, you crazy bitch.

Shawn: The only fun I’m going to have is seeing you locked up for good.

Jan: You can deny it all you want, but the chemistry we had was real. It always has been. So go ahead, lock me up. It’s not gonna change what happened.

Demon marlena: I heard there was a party. The gang’s all here, and they’re going to roast chestnuts on an open fire. Or maybe…maybe they’re just gonna roast.

Ben: Right before you got here, she was threatening to set us all on fire.

John: Never gonna happen.

Demon marlena: More empty promises.

Julie: We are stronger now. John is with us.

Demon marlena: I wouldn’t count on that. John is not your savior. Ask him about how I nearly choked him to death the other day.

John: And yet I’m still here.

Demon marlena: And yet belle isn’t here to rescue you this time.

John: So what are you bloviating about now?

Demon marlena: Let’s just say that belle is otherwise occupied.

John: What’d you do?

Demon marlena: Well, it wasn’t me. Not entirely. But, as we speak, her marriage is up in flames.

John: I said, what did you do?

Demon marlena: Oh, don’t get all bothered. But I actually am glad you’re here. Because now I can kill four birds with one stone.

Ciara: No, no!

John: God, protect us.

Demon marlena: Ha, you think you’re clever.

John: You’re not the only one with power. I’ve got god on my side, and with his help, I am taking you out.

Demon marlena: Where’d you get the medal?

John: From my friend.

Demon marlena: [Baby voice] Oh, your fwiend? Gabriel? Kind of thought so. You know, he’s not meant to get involved.

John: Neither are you!

Demon marlena: I’m still stronger.

Demon marlena: [Exhales]

Ciara: Are you okay?

Ben: Yeah, I’m fine. We’re fine. John and I got marlena into the car.

Doug: Did she wake up?

Ben: No, thank god.

Julie: Do you think john is safe to be alone with that-that creature?

Ben: He insisted that he do this on his own. I’m just glad that ciara’s safe.

Ciara: She came for me, ben. She came for our baby.

Ben: I know. But you are safe now, okay? You’re safe.

Julie: Yes, you are safe, ciara, because if anyone can drive out that demon, it’s john. Because of his great love for marlena.

Doug: And the power of our love, kid.

Doug: So, on christmas eve, we have shown satan that there are powers greater than the ultimate evil.

Allie: What could my grandma have done to tripp? I mean, do you think she hurt him, or worse?

Steve: We don’t know that yet. First we need to find him.

Allie: Okay, well, we know he was here in the hospital, and no one saw him leave, so that does that mean that he’s still around here somewhere?

Steve: [Sighs]

Steve: What’s wrong?

Belle: Well, you know how you thought my mom was going to use jan to hurt shawn and me?

Steve: Yeah. She told kayla it would be a fate worse than death.

Belle: Yeah, well, she wasn’t bluffing. Shawn and I are at the police station–shawn is booking jan right now.

Steve: What? We just saw jan in the hospital yesterday. She was still in a coma.

Belle: Well, you might wanna check who’s in that bed, because it sure as hell isn’t jan.

Steve: Oh, no.

Julie: Well, I don’t know how everybody else feels, but after everything that’s transpired, I’m looking forward to a quiet christmas.

Doug: And a peaceful new year.

Ciara: Man, this was supposed to be such a wonderful day, decorating the tree, spending time together, hanging up the ornaments and the stockings, and now look. She torched our angel.

Ben: Well, at least nobody got hurt, and I still have you here with me.

Julie: Exactly. The devil himself tried to ruin our holiday, but we’re still going to have a horton family christmas.

Jennifer: Did I hear someone say “horton family christmas”?

Ben: Hey, abigail. Listen, it’s okay. I don’t want to make a mess of your christmas.

Chad: Look, this holiday’s about family coming together, celebrate joy and hope.

Julie: The angel got a boo-boo.

Julie: The angel is resting on a little pink cloud. That’s where angels always rest. And you know what? You two got here just in time because we’re going to hang the ornaments, and you can help me figure out what we’re going to put on the top of that tree.

Abigail: Shouldn’t we wait for eli and lani?

Jennifer: And aunt maggie.

Doug: With philip missing, maggie wanted to stay close to victor.

Julie: Mm-hmm. And I heard from eli that the twins were not feeling so great, so he and lani thought they should rest to be nice and fresh for christmas day. Which means the two of you are going to get to hang their ornaments, too.

Jennifer: Yay!

Abigail: Whoo.

[Chatter]

Jan: I’m sorry, it’s just, this is actually happening. What do I do?

Marlena: What people normally do when there’s a knock at their door. You open the door. What are you waiting for?

Jan: I know you’re the prince of darkness. So with all due respect, your highness, shawn is not gonna be happy when I open the door and he realizes it’s me who lured him here.

Shawn: Police, open up!

Jan: What should we do?

Marlena: Well, I can’t very well have you meet your lover looking like that. Let me see if I can slip you into something a little more comfortable.

[Whooshing] Yes, that’s more like it. I think shawn will approve. Why don’t you take a look?

Jan as belle: [Gasps] I’m belle.

Ej: There’s nothing about this that I understand. Julie: Well, after the horrendous thanksgiving we all lived through, I want our christmas eve to be beautiful, and peaceful, and full of joy.

Julie: It’s hope. Bad weather, plane grounded. No way she’s gonna make it to christmas.

Jason: Who the hell are you, lady?

Belle: I’m belle brady. And you kidnapped my sister sami, and now you and the son of a bitch you work for are gonna pay.

[Tense music]

Shawn: Wait, hold on. Hold on, hold on, hold on.

Jan as belle: Don’t you wanna make love to me? Shawn, what’s wrong?

Shawn: I just had a frightening thought.

Jan as belle: Oh, come on. What could possibly frighten you right now?

Shawn: Just not being sure. I don’t know who you are. I mean, I’m just not being sure that you’re my wife.

Ej: You’re scared? I think if we ask the devil himself what gives him nightmares, he would say running afoul of you. What could you be possibly afraid of?

Sami: Ej, when we were in italy and I was looking after you, I was happy to do it. I was happy to do it body and soul. I wanted to help you. And it was probably the most unselfish thing I’ve ever done in my whole life. There was no schemes, no agenda. I love you. And even when you were cold and mean, I still love you.

Ej: I have expressed my remorse for how I treated you. But I’ll say it again. Samantha, I am so, so, sorry. I wasn’t in my right mind. That’s not an excuse, just a reason.

Sami: I’m not asking you to apologize again. Because I have forgiven you for that. I truly have. The way that you looked at me then, it hurt. But nothing like how it hurt when you looked at me when you found out that I had lied to you and that I had slept with lucas. And I just need to make sure you’re never gonna look at me like that again.

Ej: I’m not doing that now, am I?

Sami: No, but I need to understand what changed. And I need to make sure that that change is real.

Ej: I can tell you what hasn’t changed, how I feel about you. You are the love of my life, samantha gene.

Belle: You are an animal. How could you keep an innocent woman locked up for all those months? I just…

Ciara: I told rafe that there was no way I was gonna spend christmas eve away from the family again this year.

Ben: And I’m sorry we missed thanksgiving.

Julie: Oh. Count yourself lucky.

Ben: Shawn told me all about it. You all went toe-to-toe with the devil.

Doug: Yeah, well, old scratch didn’t have a chance, especially against your grandmother here.

Julie: But the devil is still out there. In marlena’s body, and locks and doors do not stop him. You’re sure it’s safe for you to be here?

Ben: Rafe made us promise that we would bring the police that he assigned to guard us. So they are parked right out front.

Ciara: Don’t worry, grandma. As you well know, I come from a long line of badass, strong women, I do. There’s no way that I’m gonna let the devil come anywhere near my baby or hurt anybody that I love.

[Bell ringing]

Shawn: No, no, no, no, not at all. I just–you know, I just wanted to make sure, you know, given everything that’s been happening in salem.

Rafe: You can’t be too careful, especially with the devil among us. But it’s christmas eve, shawn. Take the rest of the night off. Spend some quality time with that beautiful wife of yours.

Belle: How can this be a hard decision? You get to save yourself, like the coward you are.

Jason: I’m not saying a word without a lawyer, all right?

Rafe: All right. I’ll go call the public defender’s office and let ’em know.

Belle: You know, if you’re as smart as you think you are, you’ll make that deal.

Lucas: What the hell, man? What the hell, jason?

Jason: Hey, believe me, man. Getting caught wasn’t my idea, all right?

Lucas: Listen to me, we gotta think of something.

Jason: That’s the problem, man, I let you do the thinking last time. So this time I’m thinking for myself, all right? I’m taking the deal.

Ej: Acceptance of what happened between you and lucas, not an easy thing. But I guess I should accept the fact that as strong as you are, you do have your moments of weakness.

Sami: What about nicole? The airport can be a real challenge for new homeowners

Sami: You forgot to mention the part about how you only slept with her to hurt me.

Ej: I was with her to try and forget the pain that I had from losing you. But let’s not make this about nicole or lucas but rather how you and i have found each other yet again, how we’ve put aside our egos and our hurt and forgiven each other, which is something of a christmas miracle, isn’t it? There is nothing that I want more than for us to be together again, samantha. Tell me you want that, too.

Lucas: Listen to me. All we gotta do is think things through.

Jason: What’s to think through, huh? I’m out. I’m not gonna sacrifice my freedom for your stupid plan, so you can try to win back your old ball and chain, all right?

Jason: Remember what you said back at the cabin, huh? “Multiple felonies. Two witnesses. This is airtight case.” There’s no winning this.

Lucas: I only said that because sami was right there.

Jason: I don’t give a damn why you said that, all right? If I’m going down, I’m taking you with me. Unless you can think of a better way for us to both walk out of this, I’m giving you up, buddy.

Jan as belle: Are you ready to unwrap your present? Now what?

Shawn: I just–I’m sorry, belle. I just–with everything that’s been going on in salem, and it’s like, you know, philip is missing, he’s presumed dead. And your mom, your mom, your mom’s possessed, and she’s wreaking havoc everywhere. I just–I feel like we shouldn’t be doing this. I mean, I feel–i just–I don’t know, I feel like this is selfish.

Jan as belle: Oh, come on. You know what? You know how you should think of it? What does the devil hate more than anything else?

Shawn: I don’t know. What, christmas?

Jan as belle: Yes, and love. And I love you more than life itself. And I can’t think of a better way to stick it to old satan than for you to take me to bed and have your way with me.

Shawn: You’re right. I just–this is our anniversary. I mean, we should be cebrating. I mean, damn to the devil.

Jan as belle: Yeah. Well, I hope you don’t expect me to be an angel.

Julie: Another cookie, benjamin?

Ben: You know what, julie, I think I’m good for now. But thank you. And, you know, we really should probably get back to the safe house.

Julie: Oh, of course we were hoping you could stay and hang the ornaments with all of us. But I understand.

Ciara: Well, would it be okay if ben and I hung up our ornaments now?

Doug: That is a must. And yours are right here.

Julie: Yes.

Ciara: Thank you.

[Soft music]

Ben: You know something. I never told you this before. Last year when I thought I’d lost you, and everybody thought you were dead, doug asked me to hang your ornament, and I was so upset that I couldn’t do it in front of everyone.

Ciara: I’m so sorry, babe.

Ben: No, it wasn’t sad. I mean, at first it was but then after when I was alone I did it. I felt your hand on top of mine just like mine is on top of yours right now.

Ciara: It’s okay, ben. We can do it together.

Ben: I always knew you were with me. And in my heart, I knew that we were gonna be together again doing this this year.

Ciara: And just think, next year we’re gonna be hanging up another ornament for this little one.

[Laughs]

Belle: So any sign of my mom?

Rafe: No, but it is christmas eve, and not a creature is stirring, not ev–what the hell?

Sami: [Sighs] Any news on philip?

Lucas: No. No, he’s still missing. Paper said there’s still no leads, so…

Sami: [Sighs] I’m so sorry, lucas.

Lucas: Well, thank you. Thanks, sami. I appreciate that. What’s going on with you? What’s the latest with your mom?

Sami: [Sighs] I don’t know. I was hoping my dad might have an update. I’m just praying that she’s okay.

Lucas: Well, you know, this is the season of miracles. So here’s to hoping we both get what we want this christmas.

Sami: [Sighs]

Paulina: Yes, it’s for lani price grant. I ordered the–the deluxe floral arrangement. Uh, are you sure? You’re sure they were delivered?

[Sighs] Thank you.

[Cell phone beeps]

[Knocking on door] Come in. It’s open.

Ej: Johnny, you startled me. I had no idea you were coming home today.

Johnny: The pilot didn’t tell you chanel and I were headed back to salem?

Ej: He filed a flight plan, but I didn’t know whether you’d be on the plane since I haven’t heard from you in weeks.

Johnny: Sorry.

Ej: As you should be. After I gave you unlimited use of the company jet just so you could impress your girlfriend.

Ej: It wasn’t about impressing her. After everything that went down, chanel needed time away from her family. So what did I miss while I was gone?

Ej: [Clears throat]

Lucas: I already got what i wanted for christmas this year.

Sami: Oh, yeah?

Lucas: Mm-hmm.

Sami: What’s that?

Lucas: You.

Sami: [Sputters] Excuse me?

Lucas: You, yeah. You’re back in salem safe and sound where you belong. You’re welcome, by the way.

Sami: [Sighs] I thanked you. I’m thanking you again. Thank you for saving me.

Lucas: Yeah.

Sami: I’ve thanked you over and over, as you well know.

Lucas: I just can’t get enough of that, so–

Sami: [Laughs] Of course.

Lucas: You know who hasn’t thanked me is ej. I’ll bet he was hoping you’d be gone for good.

Sami: That’s not true, lucas.

Lucas: Really? He served you with divorce papers, didn’t he?

Sami: Yes. And I tore them up, as you well know.

Lucas: Pompous ass probably drawing up papers right as we speak. Or he probably gave ’em to you already.

Sami: No.

Lucas: No? You sure?

Sami: No, he didn’T. In fact, yesterday we were–

Lucas: You know what? I don’t have time to hear about your love life right now, actually. I’m on my way to check on my mom; she’s upstairs.

Sami: Ah. Lucas, how’s your mom doing?

Lucas: She’s not good. She’s not good. I haven’t spoken to her since yesterday. She’s really upset about philip and she’s locked herself in the room.

Sami: Well… send her my love, okay?

Lucas: Yeah. Don’t send ej mine.

Sami: [Laughs]

Victor: Damn allergies.

Kate: You don’t have to be ashamed to mourn for our son. Okay? But no need for tears anymore.

[Suspenseful music]

Victor: Why would you say that?

Kate: Because our son is alive. I’ve seen him with my own eyes.

Victor: What? Where the hell is he?

Kate: I’m going to tell you, but you cannot tell a soul.

[Knocks on door]

Lucas: Mom. Mom, come on. I’m really worried about you. I know you told roman that you don’t want to see anybody, but… you’re not the only one who’s heartbroken over philip, okay? I am too. He’s my little brother. And I know our relationship wasn’t perfect, but I still love him and I still miss him. And I still don’t know if I’m gonna see him ever again. So come on, open the door.

[Dramatic music]

Philip! Lila: Before I was diagnosed, there was nothing

Sami: Belle. Oh, thank god you’re here. Listen, do you have any updates on mom? Do you know anything about how she’s doing?

Belle: No, uh, and you know what? I really can’t talk about this right now. I have to get this suit over to brady before his–

Sami: How is brady doing?

Belle: He’s not doing great. He was just arrested for murder.

Sami: But he has you to defend him, right? So–so that’s good. I’m just really worried about mom. Hasn’t john called? Has he given you any information? How is he doing?

Belle: Uh, he hasn’t called yet. I’m sure it’s ’cause he’s out on the search. And steve’s with him. And shawn’s at the safehouse with ben and ciara, and–

Sami: I just don’t even know what good that’s gonna do. Mom can turn herself into a cat or a pumpkin or a christmas tree. I mean–

Belle: Yeah, well, got any other ideas?

Sami: No. No, I don’T. When I called her, when I finally managed to reach her when I was kidnapped and she told me what was happening, I felt so desperate to help her, to do something. And there’s just nothing we can do.

Belle: Yeah, no. There’s nothing we can do right now.

Sami: I hate that helplessness. I hate it so much, belle, which is why I wanna hire you.

Belle: Hire me? To do what?

Sami: To help me save my marriage.

Ej: Remember you told me that chanel felt marlena wanted her to drop that bombshell at abe and paulina’s wedding? That somehow your grandmother was insisting that she tell everyone paulina’s secret.

Johnny: Yeah, I’m still shocked actually that grandma would even share that secret with chanel–that paulina is not just chanel’s mom, but she’s lani’s mom too.

Ej: Mm. I’m sure paulina shared that in confidence.

Johnny: Of course she did. As a patient talking to a therapist. I mean, for grandma to share something like that with someone, especially somebody with such a personal connection, that’s–that’s not like her.

Ej: Because it wasn’t her.

Paulina: I thought you went away with johnny to process what happened at the wedding, not to get busy all over italia.

Chanel: Ever heard of multi-tasking?

Paulina: Oh. Well, uh, good for you.

Chanel: And–and how has everything been here? How are things with abe?

Paulina: [Sighs] He says he still loves me. But he doesn’t know if he can ever trust me again. I told him I would do anything to earn back his trust. He says there’s nothing I can do. He just needs time.

Chanel: Well, okay. So he’s not closing the door. That’s good. And what about lani?

Paulina: Well, I haven’t seen lani since the aftermath of the wedding. The wedding that wasn’T.

Chanel: I am so sorry about my part in that, mama. That–I just still can’t believe that I blurted out that you’re lani’s mother in front of everyone.

Paulina: No, no, no, baby. That’s not your fault. Turns out… the devil made you do it.

[Ominous music]

Eli: “I don’t expect you to forgive me, I just wanna say that I love you and miss you so much. Merry christmas with love, from your mama.”

Lani: Why can’t she just leave me alone?

Eli: She loves you.

Lani: Yeah, well, she lied to me for my entire life. There are no flowers in the world that can change that.

Eli: Lani, I know, okay? But paulina’s not just gonna go away. You’re gonna have to face her. Talk to her and deal with this for your own sake.

Lani: Do you mind watching the twins?

Eli: Yeah. Pay me when you get back.

Lani: Uh, pay you? Um, I’m sorry, did I forget to inform you that those are your kids too?

Eli: Yes, I know, but the payment that I have in mind I think we’ll both like.

Philip: I’m sorry I let everyone think I was–

Lucas: How long were you gonna let us think that? Forever?

Philip: I don’t know. I figured… no one would really miss me that much.

Lucas: Oh, really? Did you hear what I just said outside there?

Philip: That’s why i opened the door. It meant… it meant so much to me. But lucas, you can’t tell anyone I’m alive. You can’t

Lucas: All right. All right, man, I won’T. Relax. But what are you gonna do?

Philip: I don’t know. Mom just went to talk to my father. She said she has a plan to fix this–fix me. But I don’t know that I’m fixable. My god, look at what I’ve done.

Lucas: Hold on, hold on. Just relax, all right? You’ve been under a lot of stress the last few months. You’ve been pushed to your limit. It’s not your fault.

Philip: A lot of it is. You know, the gambling. Getting involved with ava vitali. Twice. I made some terrible choices.

Lucas: Who hasn’t? Come on.

Philip: [Sighs] But being with chloe was supposed to turn all that around. You know, it was supposed to be a whole new beginning like I told you and mom at the pub that day. I was giving up on the jealousy, the paranoia, the blowing up over nothing. And I had it all under control until…

Lucas: What? What? Until what?

Philip: When I left the pub that day, I went to basic black and I overheard brady and chloe talking about having sex on the conference table. And it took me right back to high school. You know, brady moving in on my girlfriend, taking what’s mine. I don’t know. Something inside me just snapped.

Lucas: Well, of course you did; they were having an affair under your nose.

Philip: Except they weren’T. Chloe told my mom it was all a misunderstanding. She and brady never slept together.

Lucas: And you believe that?

Philip: I don’t know. But if I really love chloe, shouldn’t I trust her?

Lucas: I don’t know. Not necessarily. Not when it comes to brady.

Philip: Well, but even if she did cheat on me, what I did was worse– was much worse.

Lucas: Philip, come on.

Philip: I let the people I love think I was dead. I set brady up to go to prison for a murder he didn’t commit.

[Sighs] I’ve done so much damage. And now how do I undo it, lucas?

Victor: Why would philip fake his own death?

Kate: [Sighs] And he also framed brady for the murder. But trust me, victor, he was not in his right mind when he did it.

Victor: It’s because of that trollop, chloe lane. She–she–she drove him to this.

Kate: I mean, he believes that everything he’s done he’s failed at. He believes that no one loves him. I’m afraid he really thinks that life is not worth living. He needs help.

Victor: What he needs is a damn good lawyer.

Kate: Oh, god. He’s fragile. Just the stress of a trial would be too much. I mean, not to mention a prison sentence.

Victor: What are you saying, kate? Is he going to live in the room over the brady pub for the rest of his life?

Kate: What I’m saying is that you and I need to make him disappear so he can get the help that he needs.

Victor: Mm, I can’t do that. We do it every night.

Victor: I would do anything in my power to help philip. But brady’s my grandson. I can’t let him go to prison for a murder he didn’t commit.

Kate: Okay. Well, there has to be something to make this mess go away for both of them, then.

Victor: And what would that be?

Kate: I don’t know. I’m not sure yet. But we need to figure it out together.

Lucas: Listen, I’m sure that mom and victor can help you in some way.

Philip: They can’t fix everything. My future with chloe is probably over. If I ever had one. Brady’ll probably get out of this and somehow convince chloe that he’s innocent. She’ll give him another chance and he’ll win.

Lucas: Well, don’t do that. Don’t go there.

Philip: She’ll want nothing to do with me and I’ll have no other choice but to walk away. But I’m just not sure that I can.

Sami: There’s no way in hell I am giving up on my marriage, belle. Anyway, ej only wants to divorce me over some “dimera pride” I know he still loves me, okay? And I’m gonna fight like hell. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to save my marriage. What?

Belle: I just can’t believe you’re thinking about yourself at a time like this.

Sami: Come on, belle. I came over here to get an update on mom.

Belle: Right. But since there isn’t one, why not just ask for a favor for yourself.

Sami: Is it a crime to ask my sister to help me save my marriage?

Belle: Oh, my god. Sami, mom is possessed, philip might be dead, and brady is facing prison for murder. And you’re thinking about your marriage?

Sami: Yeah. I am also worried about my marriage. And as a married woman, I would think you’d appreciate that it is not exactly a trivial matter. We have two kids together. He is the love of my life.

Belle: Okay, okay, okay. Fine. I get it.

Sami: So you’ll represent me?

Belle: Even if I wanted to, I can’T. I work for dimera enterprises. It would be unethical for me to represent you.

Sami: Aren’t you representing your brother right now?

Belle: Yes, and he’s waiting for me. I’m sure that you won’t have any trouble finding another lawyer.

Sami: Belle, I don’t want another lawyer, I want you.

Belle: No, you want someone to make ej stay married to you.

Sami: Y-yes. That would be the point.

Belle: Okay, well, that’s exactly why I have to turn you down.

Sami: What? Why?

Belle: Because I don’t take cases I know I can’t win.

Johnny: So when the ouija board said that the devil was at the dimera crypt–

Ej: It was right on the money.

Johnny: And when I went there to scout it for my movie and I ran into grandma marlena outside, that wasn’t just a halloween costume she was wearing? She… she actually is possessed by the devil?

Ej: Satan had taken possession of her. And she locked john and your grandma susan in the crypt. You inadvertently tipped off steve johnson before you left town, otherwise they would have barely made it out alive.

Johnny: Well, are they okay now?

Ej: Physically, yes. My mother is still a little shaken up. She’s staying here, in fact, and would be delighted to see you.

Johnny: Yeah, no wonder grandma was so stoked about my movie. Do you this this is gonna derail the whole project? Uh, no, I’m s–never mind. That is–I’m sorry. That’s the last thing that matters right now. Um… does mom know about all this or is she still off the grid?

Ej: Actually son, there’s something else you should know.

Chanel: Johnny’s grandmother is possessed by the devil?

Paulina: Her evil eyes bore right into mine. And I lived to tell the tale.

Paulina: Well, I’m sure he does by now. The whole town– everybody else does. Probably the whole world. Were you living under a rock in italy?

Chanel: I told you, we were…busy. Actually, we–

[Knocks on door]

Paulina: [Chuckles] Hold that thought.

Chanel: I’ll get it.

[Light, tense music]

Hi susan! Honey?

Paulina: Oh, lani? Um, I’m glad you came by.

Lani: Um, chanel, I–I–I thought you were in italy.

Chanel: I got back this morning. And lani, I can’t say this enough, I am so sorry about what I did at the wedding.

Lani: It wasn’t your fault.

Chanel: Thank you for understanding. While I was away, I did a lot of thinking.

Lani: About what?

Chanel: How jealous I was because I thought you were mama’s favorite. It was stupid and petty and I’m over it now. I got something I always wanted–a sister.

Lani: [Chuckles]

Chanel: And no matter how you feel about me, I am so grateful.

Lani: So am I. Chanel, what we are, it may have changed, but…what hasn’t changed is that I love you very much. And I always will. Okay?

[Sentimental music]

Chanel: Mama feels the same way about you.

Lani: Yeah, um… it said that in the card that you sent with the flowers.

Paulina: Oh, so you got them.

[Chuckles] Uh, is that why you came by here?

Lani: Actually, it is.

Johnny: Mom was kidnapped? By who?

Ej: No one knows. After that clod lucas rescued her, she declined to file a police report.

Johnny: Why?

Ej: You’d have to ask her.

Johnny: Is she okay?

Ej: I’d guess it’s the kidnappers who are a little worse for wear.

Johnny: I’m calling her now.

[Cell phone beeps]

[Line ringing]

Sami: Johnny?

Johnny: Mom. Hey, dad just told me what happened. Are you okay?

Sami: Yes, yes. I’m fine. I’m just so happy to hear your voice.

Johnny: I’m a lot happier to hear yours. When can I see you?

Sami: Um, well, are you at home with your father now?

Johnny: Yeah.

Sami: I can come over now if that’s okay.

Johnny: That’s perfect. I’ll see you soon.

[Cell phone beeps] Mom’s coming over.

Ej: Now?

Johnny: Is that a problem?

Ej: No, not a problem. It’ll give me a chance to serve her with new divorce papers. She tore up the last ones.

Johnny: You’re still getting divorced?

Ej: Why do you sound surprised?

Johnny: I don’t know. I just thought after you found out what mom went through it might make you miss her. Make you realize what she means to you.

Ej: She cheated on me, johnny. I’ve moved on. I’m with nicole now.

Johnny: [Scoffs] Nicole? Really? Didn’t you cheat on nicole with mom?

Ej: Your point being?

Johnny: I guess we’ll see.

Ej: Mm.

Belle: You know, if you think getting in ej’s face every 5 minutes is gonna make him fall back in love with you–

Sami: I didn’t ask for your advice, counselor. But I’m gonna give you a tip. You messed with the devil’s plans when you showed up at that cabin. So if I were you, I’d avoid any black cats crossing your path.

Belle: Oh, yes. Thanks, sami. Appreciate it.

Sami: Oh, and happy anniversary.

[Phone rings]

[Phone beeps]

Belle: Hey, kate. Uh, sure. I’ll be right there.

[Phone beeps]

Kate: Okay, belle’s on her way. And don’t you look so glum. This is going to work.

Victor: Well, it better.

[Tense music]

– Oh…oh. – What’s going on?

Lani: The flowers were beautiful.

Paulina: I’m glad you like them. Took me a long time to pick out the arrangement.

Lani: Yeah, well… I will be taking them to the hospital tomorrow and give them to someone who actually wants them. And as for this card…

Chanel: Lani.

Lani: Chanel, I know you mean well, but this is between me and paulina. I want you to stop reaching out to me. Stop sending me gifts that I will either give away or throw in the trash. I know how much you don’t like to waste a penny of your hard-earned money.

Paulina: Lani. Lani. [Stammers] Merry christmas.

Lani: Bye.

Paulina: Please say happy birthday to those two beautiful little angels for me.

[Door shuts]

[Somber music]

Johnny: Look, if you’re uncomfortable being around mom, you can leave before she gets here.

Ej: Who’s uncomfortable? As I said, it’ll give me the opportunity to take care of our legal business. And then she’ll be out of my life once and for all.

Johnny: Fine, but chanel is coming over for lunch soon, so I would appreciate it if you two could keep it civil.

Ej: It seems chanel is accustomed to family drama. But–

Sami: Johnny! Johnny! Johnny! There you are!

Johnny: Mom!

Sami: Oh! It’s so good to see you.

Johnny: You too.

Sami: Look at your handsome face. I can’t believe you’re here and allie’s here and your father’s here. We’re all in salem together at once. It’s like a christmas miracle.

Johnny: Hasn’t happened since we were little.

Sami: Isn’t it just the most wonderful time of the year? There’s nothing more wonderful than having my family back together.

[Sobbing]

Lucas: Look, man, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s gonna happen with chloe. I really don’T. But you got other things to worry about right now.

Philip: Yeah. Okay, I won’T. I will focus on making things right.

Lucas: Good. That’s a better idea, isn’t it?

Philip: It’s just… you know, what’s right is brady being with kristen. You know, she’s the love of his life. And for me… it’s always been chloe. Of course there was other relationships, but–

Lucas: No, I know. I know. I know exactly what you mean. I get it, believe me. I spent a long time being infatuated with carrie brady when the woman I really loved ever since she was in high school was…

Philip: Sami.

Lucas: Yeah, man. We were best friends. We were lovers. We were enemies. We were everything. Now it looks like I’m on the same boat you are, little brother.

Philip: At least you and sami still have a chance. You didn’t do anything crazy like I did.

Lucas: I wouldn’t be too sure about that.

Belle: Hi.

Kate: Hi.

Belle: So, uh, I have brady’s bail hearing in an hour. If you have information that can help him, now is the time.

Kate: There’s not going to be a bail hearing.

Belle: What do you mean?

Kate: Victor and I have decided to revoke the document we signed having philip declared legally dead.

Victor: Without a body, trask has no case.

Kate: And she’ll have to drop the charges against brady.

Belle: That’s true.

[Laughs] I’m glad to see you’ve come to your senses, but why?
