Jack: Thank you for offering to take harrison to the park. I think some sunshine and fresh air will do him good.

Diane: Well, I’m just glad he’s up for it. I was worried that he’d feel too overwhelmed after learning about what happened to ashland. But when he woke up from his nap, he was good to go.

Jack: Yeah, I’m sure he’s gonna have his ups and downs, but today he made it very clear he wants to take his mitt, go to the park, and toss the ball with his pals.

Diane: Yeah. The loss is too much for a boy his age to take in all at once.

Jack: I think it’s a lucky thing that you came by when you did. I mean, when kyle and summer first broke the news to him, I was impressed. I’d kind of forgotten you have a real touch in communicating with little ones.

Diane: Mm. Well, my heart breaks for harrison. I mean, he’s had a lot to deal with in his short time on this earth. And, you know, I only saw him and ashland a few times, but i have to say, it was clear they had a genuine bond.

Jack: I agree. I never thought I would say this, but I’m kind of glad that ashland decided to defy the restraining order and spend those last few precious moments with that little boy. Hopefully, it’ll be a strong enough memory for our grandson to carry for the rest of his life.

Diane: I have an idea. Why don’t you join us at the park?

Jack: I would. I’m expected at the office.

Diane: Fine, but you know where we’ll be if you change your mind.

Jack: At the swings.

Diane: At the swings.

Summer: Hey, mom.

Phyllis: Hey. Oh, thank you. Thank you for meeting with me, as well.

Summer: Of course. Is everything okay?

Phyllis: Well, I want to ask you that. How’d it go with harrison, telling him about ashland’s death?

Summer: I mean, we did our best, but, god, his little face just broke my heart. You could tell that he was so confused.

Phyllis: Ugh. I feel so bad for him. So, you left him with kyle?

Summer: No. Harrison was napping, so kyle and I decided we should go to the office and clear our schedules. Jack’s there with him in case he wakes up.

Phyllis: Ah, how great is grandpa jack. He knows the right thing to say in this kind of situation.

Summer: Mom, I know how much you miss having jack in your life. Not that I am trying to get involved or fix anything.

Phyllis: No, you don’t have to. Don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about it. Jack and I will work things out. We will…eventually.

Devon: One of these.

Amanda: Thank you.

Devon: Thanks, man. And get two of these.

Amanda: Wow. You must be really hungry. You’re ordering the entire menu.

Devon: Well, most of it is for you.

Amanda: For me?

Devon: Yes, because I noticed while you were helping your mother get situated in virginia that you weren’t really taking care of yourself.

Amanda: I know. I know. I just — I — I needed to make sure that naya had everything she needed, you know?

Devon: I know you did, and now that we’re back home, I can spoil you and get you all your favorite things and all your favorite foods. All the curly fries you can eat.

Amanda: [ Gasps ] Well, I have to admit that the surest and fastest way to my heart is curly fries.

Devon: Is it?

Amanda: Yes.

Devon: Oh, good.

[ Both laugh ] Well, I’ll joking aside, I hope that you know that you can tell me if there’s anything else you need me to do — ’cause I can tell that something is still weighing on you. You barely said two words on the flight back home.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] I just can’t help but think that maybe I shouldn’t have left.

Elena: Guess who.

Nate: Ah. I smell [Sniffs] Sunscreen and ocean salt.

[ Both laugh ] Hey.

Elena: Hi.

Nate: Wow. This is a beautiful surprise, but I didn’t expect you back till later. I was planning on picking you up. Did we get our wires crossed?

Elena: No. I caught an earlier flight because I missed you. And I missed this.

Nate: Mmm. I missed that, too.

Elena: Mm-hmm.

Nate: And there you were in hawaii, surrounded by all these beautiful beaches. If you had time before your flight, you could have spent it by the ocean or done some sightseeing.

Elena: Well, there is no sight in the world I would rather see than the one I am looking at right now.

Nate: So, you did miss me.

Elena: Yes. And that is why I came straight here to see if you could take some time away from the office for a little bit.

Nate: You know what? I just realized I am due for a break.

Elena: Oh, are you?

Nate: Right about now.

Elena: Okay.

Nate: Yeah.

Elena: Ooh.

Faith: Even though the odds are totally in her favor, it’s got to be terrifying.

Sharon: Well, promise me you’ll stay positive when they get here.

Faith: Of course I will. But shouldn’t they be back by now?

Mariah: Hi, guys.

Faith: Hey, welcome home! We were waiting for you!

Mariah: Oh, faith, that is so sweet.

Amanda: Thank you.

Devon: Thanks, man. So, hey, how come you didn’t speak up if you weren’t ready to leave your mom? ‘Cause we could have extended the trip. That was the plan before imani showed up.

Amanda: I know, but then imani did show up, and she insisted that she had everything under control. And, you know, honestly, I do not think that that is how my sister is feeling. I think she’s trying really hard not to show how worried she is. She’s trying to be strong, but it’s hard for her to see our mother like this.

Devon: Yeah, I’m sure it is, but what about you? How do you feel seeing your mom like this?

Amanda: Actually, I’m a little torn because I wanted to stay, I wanted to be helpful, i wanted to be there for as long as I could, but I don’t even think they want me there.

Devon: What makes you think that? Was — was it ’cause imani kept encouraging you to go home, saying she could take care of everything?

Amanda: I think it’s more than that. It’s just… naya and eric and imani — they have been this tight little family for so long, ever since imani was born. But I am the newcomer. I am practically a stranger. And if it wasn’t for me, sutton wouldn’t be in prison.

Devon: I think that sutton is exactly where he deserves to be, and I’m sure that naya thinks the same thing.

Amanda: Yes, I know that. I know that in here. But it is — it’s different when you are sick and you miss your father. And the heart just wants what it wants. You don’t just suddenly stop loving someone that you’ve loved your whole life. So I feel like sometimes when naya looks at me, she resents me in some way.

Devon: Well, I’ve certainly never got that impression from her at all. But if this is the reason that we came back home, then, yeah, i think that we probably did make a mistake.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: You know, it used to be so simple between jack and me. I mean, I’d walk into the room, and his face would light up.

Summer: I remember.

Phyllis: Yep. Even before we got together this last time — even before that, I mean, we just gravitate to each other, and we always have each other’s back. And I always get his take on things. He has such a great opinion about everything. I mean, and he’d do the same thing with me. And when he was in los angeles and I hadn’t heard from him, i mean, I got on a plane and i went to see him.

Summer: Well, his face must have really lit up then.

Phyllis: You know what? It did not because it was like he’d seen a ghost. Diane. But I was there for him. I supported him.

Summer: I know that must have meant a lot to him.

Phyllis: I don’t know. Every time he talks to me now, he’s so angry and tense. And I’m the same. I’m the same. I mean, I was so frustrated the other day, I just blurted out my feelings.

Summer: Oh, god, mom, that is not always a good thing when it comes to you. What did you say to him?

Phyllis: I said I love him.

Summer: What did he say?

Phyllis: He said, “I love you.” A dental tool is round for a reason.

Devon: I think I have a good idea of where you’re coming from ’cause — I don’t know if i ever told you this, but when i found out that katherine was my grandmother, she’d had a stroke that put her in the hospital. And that, plus her age, should have made it very clear that i didn’t have a lot of time left with her. But I didn’t trust her. And that kept us from getting close until it was almost too late.

Amanda: I’m sorry. But I want you to know that i don’t — I don’t not trust naya. You know, I think that it’s the other way around. I think she doesn’t trust me because I helped get sutton convicted.

Devon: Yeah, but you wouldn’t be having these concerns if you trusted the way naya has been treating you. ‘Cause hasn’t she made it very, very clear that she loves every second of time that she gets to spend with you? Right?

Amanda: Yeah.

Devon: And I — I think that she probably looks at this as an opportunity to get to make up for all that lost time between you guys. And hopefully you have many, many more years of getting to do that.

Amanda: Yeah, I really hope so.

Devon: I — I believe that you will. But if your heart is telling you that you need to be back in virginia, then that’s exactly where you need to be, alright? Don’t let your assumptions of what other people are feeling keep you from doing what you really want to do. You should be there as often and for as long as you want to be.

Amanda: Devon, that is not practical.

Devon: How come?

Amanda: Because I’ve already taken so much time off of work already, and there is a ton of work that still needs to be done in order for this merger to be a success.

Devon: Don’t worry about the merger. You and I talked about that. We have an entire legal team that you helped us find to rely on. We’ll be just fine. And you can do work remotely from virginia.

Amanda: And what about you? What about us? How does this relationship survive long distance like this?

Devon: Because if I can be with you, I will be with you there. And if I can’t go, then I will miss you like crazy, but it’s fine. Either way, it’s fine ’cause you have my support on this 100%.

Summer: Wait, did jack actually say he’s still in love with you?

Phyllis: Yeah. Yes, he did.

Summer: Okay. Does this mean that it could lead to something more? Are you at least gonna get together to talk about it?

Phyllis: No, he didn’t say it like that. It wasn’t like, “I love you.” It was like — it was like, “oh, you know, I love you, and I regret it.” It wasn’t like, “I’m following my heart and seeing where it goes.” It was like, “I’m mad at myself. I can’t push the stop button,” is what it was like, “because I’m hurting.” I mean, no one gets it. Like, I hurt, too.

Summer: Well, I mean, this is hurting me, too, to see you both like this. Jack has been nothing but kind and wonderful to me and kyle and harrison, and I just want to see him happy.

Phyllis: I do, too. I want to see him happy, too. And he could be happy with me. But he won’t let himself. And he won’t talk about it. I mean, I made a mistake. I apologized, like, a million times, summer.

Summer: Yeah, but you still haven’t resolved the main issue.

Phyllis: Yes, the main issue being that jack will only look at diane in rose-colored glasses? That issue?

Diane: I’m sorry to interrupt, but —

Phyllis: But we’re having a private conversation, and, yes, you are interrupting. Bye.

Summer: Okay, what my mother meant to say —

Diane: No, summer. I’m afraid you’re the only one who’s put any stock in your mother’s so-called truce. The rest of the family knew that she wouldn’t be able to help herself. Pain hits fast.

Mariah: And the doctor said the procedure couldn’t have gone better. The only unfortunate thing is tessa has to be on complete vocal rest for the next few days — so, no talking, no — no laughing or coughing or clearing your throat. And the hardest part, no singing or humming. I know. I’m sorry, my little songbird. But that’s kind of the best part in all of this, is I get to say sappy things to tessa and she can’t groan. So, it’s kind of a win-win.

Sharon: Well, I plan on keeping you fully stocked with plenty of smoothies and decaffeinated teas while you recover. And maybe the best thing that mariah can do for you is to stop cracking so many jokes. Tessa’s not supposed to be laughing, either.

Mariah: Uh…yeah. Wait, what are you trying to say?

Faith: Uh, that we don’t have to worry. Your jokes — not so funny.

Mariah: Wow. Okay, fine.

Faith: Oh! I have the best gift for this situation. You can use this instead of talking. What?

[ Laughter ]

Faith: I get it. Obviously, tessa could have just used her phone, but with the whiteboard, she can be more expressive — pictures, emojis. It’s like carrying around her own thought bubble.

Mariah: That’s a very good point. You know, we can also play hangman or ticktacktoe, draw charades. Very good gift. Thank you.

[ Laughter ]

Elena: I missed you.

Nate: I missed you, too. So, tell me more about this conference. How did it go?

Elena: It was great. I got to meet a lot of amazing people working in really fascinating areas of research.

Nate: Mm. Sounds interesting.

Elena: Yeah, you would have loved it. But I know there was a lot going on at chancellor-winters, so maybe next time.

Nate: [ Sighs ] Did anyone record your presentation? I would love to see it.

Elena: I hope so. Actually, I got a really positive response from everyone. I think I even surprised myself. I wasn’t nervous at all. I guess all of my work at askmdnow and advocating for the clinic is really starting to pay off. I feel like I am finding my voice. You know, standing up there in front of all those people, i feel like I was really connecting with them.

Nate: I’m proud of you. I know how important it is to feel like you’re being heard and respected.

Elena: Yeah. And then the funny thing is, is all of my energy and attention has been splintered all over the place lately — I mean, like, with askmdnow, at the hospital, at the clinic. But suddenly I feel like it’s all coming together, like I’m able to utilize my training and my skills and my experience and actually bring something to the table. I learned a lot at that conference, and I am excited to share what I’ve learned with my peers at the hospital.

Nate: [ Sighing ] Mm. Speaking of work… I gotta get back to the office.

Elena: Ohh. In that case, I’m sad that i mentioned it.

[ Both laugh ] But maybe soon we will start working together again. Did imani get me out of the contract so I can start my work with chancellor-winters?

Nate: Unfortunately, imani had leave town to go help with her mother, and I’m sure she didn’t get it done before she left.

Elena: Hmm. Is amanda with naya, too?

Nate: I’m expecting her and devon back today.

Elena: That’s great. Maybe amanda can handle my contract. I think that’d be for the better anyway.

Nate: I don’t know if I had said this, but did I tell you how happy I am that you came back early?

Elena: Maybe a few times.

Nate: Oh. A few times? Okay, well, I guess I better go to work, but tonight, here, this spot.

Elena: This spot.

Nate: Right?

[ Sighs ]

Diane: I will leave you and summer alone. I just wanted to give you an update on the situation. Oh, I assume you filled your mother in on what happened to ashland?

Phyllis: Uh, uh, no. I was with summer when we heard about ashland, way before you heard, diane.

Diane: O-okay. Well, I only learned about it myself this morning when i stopped by the house. Kyle and summer were breaking the sad news to harrison.

Phyllis: Barging in when you’re not wanted…again.

Diane: Summer certainly didn’t see it that way. She was kind enough to let me offer some words of comfort to harrison. And kyle even told him who i am — his grandmother, kyle’s mom.

Summer: I had my doubts about involving diane in the conversation, but harrison responded so positively to her. And then kyle just felt like it was the right time. None of it was planned.

Phyllis: Hmm. No. But, you see, it was planned because she is working the situation. Honestly, how low can you go, diane? You’re using that little boy’s heartbreak to worm yourself back into the family.

Diane: Do I need to remind you that I’m part of that family, too?

Phyllis: No, no, no! You lost that privilege years ago when you abandoned the family.

Diane: Kyle obviously disagrees. And I hope that harrison learning that he has a grandmother who will always love him will help soften the blow of losing the man he called father.

Phyllis: Are you —

Diane: That poor, sweet little boy.

Phyllis: This is amazing. So — so, what you’re expecting me to believe is that your heart is breaking for this little boy? I mean, I’d have to believe that you had a heart.

Summer: [ Scoffs ] Mom —

Phyllis: I mean, this is coming from the woman who years ago let her son believe she was dead by getting her head bashed in with a rock.

Diane: My son knows how much I regret that. And if he’s willing to forgive me, then who the hell are you to second-guess his decision?

Phyllis: I am somebody who saw the fallout, diane! I helped that young man grow up heartbroken that he lost a mother. I helped him deal with your lies! I mean, seriously! I mean, now you come back…

Jack: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

Phyllis: …Expecting us to believe…

Jack: Stop! Stop! Stop!

Phyllis: …That you were the virtuous grandmother!

Jack: What the hell is going on here?

Phyllis: Hello, jack.

Jack: Do you not see harrison there on the swings? He could have heard every word you just said.

Faith: I’m sorry about your summer tour, tessa. I know you must be so disappointed.

Mariah: [ Laughs ] I think i can speak for both of us when i say it sucks.

Sharon: How long will it be until she can sing again?

Mariah: It’s gonna be a little while. Once she recovers, she’s gonna need to go to vocal therapy with a speech pathologist. And once she gets her normal speaking voice back, we can start working on singing. But it’s a — it’s a gradual process for sure.

Faith: But tessa can still write music and play guitar, right? That can’t possibly go against doctor’s orders. So you’re not losing music from your life altogether. You’re just taking a little break from the performance part.

Mariah: And just be warned — I’m gonna be playing tessa’s album a lot because I don’t know if I can go months without hearing my wife’s beautiful singing voice.

Sharon: Well, you’ll get no complaints from me about that. I’m gonna be playing it more around here, too.

Mariah: And I will say the one positive part of all of this is, I mean, tessa and I are virtually never gonna argue again.

Sharon: Well, I don’t know how you can guarantee that.

Mariah: Well, I heard from a little birdie that, uh, yelling is actually really bad for your voice. So, you know, doesn’t matter what I do. She’s not gonna be able to yell at me, so I plan on getting away with quite a bit.

[ Laughter ] Okay, maybe it’s time we go upstairs, get some rest. You ready? Bye, guys.

Sharon: Okay.

Mariah: Thank you much. Alright. Let’s go.

Devon: I don’t know what the deal is, lily. You and billy are gone. Nate’s not here. I’m the only person holding this company together.

[ Chuckles ] Yeah, no, amanda and I got back earlier today. She’s doing alright. It’s just — it’s been a little tough for her, but her mother is doing as well as can be expected, so… yeah. I will. I will for sure. Where’s this file you want me to find? Is it on your desk? Drawer? There’s nothing in there.

[ Drawer closes ] Well, it’s not there. Is it brown? Hang on. I think I found it. Yeah, this is it. This is it. I’ll, uh — I can take a picture and then I’ll e-mail it to you. Hey, let me call you back real quick.

Nate: Hey, man. Welcome back. How did things go in virginia?

Devon: They went fine. Can you explain this to me, though?

Diane: It’s true, jack. Phyllis didn’t know that harrison was here. I was just about to explain to them that we thought a trip to the park would lift his spirits.

Phyllis: Yes, I did not know he was here. You could have told me sooner.

Jack: And perhaps you could have shown a little more restraint in a public place. People could hear you all the way across the park.

Diane: Why don’t I go check on harrison? Summer, are you okay if I get him a treat?

Summer: I think that’s a great idea. Would you, please?

[ Clears throat ] Look, jack, I highly doubt that harrison was paying any attention to what was going on over here. He thinks grown-ups are boring. And if he did overhear anything, I’m sure it’s something we can explain away later.

Jack: I hope you’re right. I just think it’s wrong that anyone should have to deal with it, least of all harrison. Do you have any idea what my grandson is going through?

Phyllis: Yes, I actually do. That’s why I find it so disgusting that diane is using it to her advantage.

Jack: Of course that’s your take on this.

Phyllis: Okay, I’m not gonna get into this conversation right now. You know, why — why don’t you go check on harrison? We don’t want him to be alone with that woman any longer than he has to.

Summer: Mom —

Phyllis: I’m good. Really.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: I mean…

Jack: It just doesn’t end with you, does it?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Faith left?

Sharon: Yeah. She and moses had something planned. How’s tessa doing?

Mariah: She’s good. She’s sleeping. And I wanted to get some work done, but it’s super quiet up there.

Sharon: Well, I guess you’ll have to get used to that until tessa gets her voice back. I’ll get you some coffee.

Mariah: Yeah. Thanks, mom. Mm…

Kyle: [ Sighs ] Hey, mariah. How’d tessa’s surgery go?

Mariah: Pretty much as expected. She’s upstairs resting now.

Kyle: That’s a relief. I hope everything continues to go well.

Mariah: Is everything okay?

Kyle: Guess you haven’t heard the news.

Mariah: What news? Who do you think you are, taking up space?

Nate: Is there something wrong with this? It’s just info on the performers we’re sending to the festival in chicago.

Devon: I’m aware of what it is. Why is jason santino’s name on it?

Nate: He’s replacing tessa since she had to cancel due to her surgery. We talked about this. You said you were on board with it.

Devon: Nobody signed off on you doing it, though. We just talked about it maybe working out. There’s a difference. I just booked him yesterday to perform at a festival in los angeles on the exact same dates. I just gave the go-ahead to start promoting it.

Nate: I really wish you’d kept me in the loop on this.

Devon: I really wish you’d told me about this ’cause then you would have been in the loop.

Nate: But I did tell you about it, if you recall, and i thought I had your approval. But no worries. We’ll figure this out. We can either switch the date for one of the performances or find someone else to perform in L.A. Who they’ll be just as happy with.

Devon: That doesn’t solve our problem completely because we have two festivals promoting the same guy on the same weekend, and it makes us look stupid, like we don’t know what we’re doing. So, can you please get pr on this right away?

Nate: Sure. I will get right on it.

Devon: Thank you.

Nate: I will let them know that this has been a miscommunication.

Devon: Alright.

Nate: I hope you understand that’s all this was.

Devon: What this was, uh, is the second time now that you’ve overstepped authority and we’re having to do damage control.

Nate: Sorry. I truly thought I was doing what you wanted.

Devon: I accept your apology, but my concern is that I’m probably gonna be taken some more trips coming up, and it’s just gonna leave more opportunity for these misunderstandings to happen. And they can’t happen ’cause this is a very important time for our company right now. We’re brand-new. There’s a lot of eyes on us, and I’m sure our competition would love to see us stumble. So we have to keep our act together.

Nate: You’re right, and i agree with you on that.

Devon: I’m glad you do. And it would be one thing if i had the time to be here with you every day and give you the supervision that you need, but I don’t have it. So I don’t know what we do. Maybe we find you a mentor.

Nate: A mentor?

Devon: Yeah.

Nate: Don’t you think you’re overreacting to a minor miscommunication? I’m no intern. I don’t need adult supervision like some kid fresh out of school.

Amanda: Is everything okay in here?

Mariah: Poor harrison. He’s taken one blow after another. I mean, do you need to go be with him? Please don’t let me keep you.

Kyle: It’s okay. I was on my way home when I got a text from my mother saying that she was taking harrison to the park.

Mariah: Well, it’s nice he has something fun to distract him.

Kyle: Mm. And I stopped off for some caffeine because I sure as hell didn’t sleep much last night. I hate thinking about harrison and what his life would look like right now if I never learned that I was his father.

Mariah: Hey, no what-ifs. That only brings pain.

Kyle: You’re right.

Mariah: So, it sounds like diane is being pretty helpful.

Kyle: She was great with him this morning. It reminded me of how she was with me at that age. Seeing her with him really got to me. It hit me so hard that I ended up telling harrison that diane was more than just a family friend, she was his grandmother.

Mariah: Wow. That’s a big step.

Kyle: She earned it.

Jack: I guess it was too much to hope that you would keep the truce you set up with diane.

Phyllis: You know, I really tried for my daughter, but i just couldn’t do it.

Jack: Yeah, that much is clear.

Phyllis: I tried so hard, even though it went against all my instincts. But I’m sorry. It got the better of me. I couldn’t do it anymore.

Jack: Believe me, I have also struggled letting diane back into my life, but I have focused on the fact that harrison and kyle come first.

Phyllis: Are you saying you’re a better parent than i am? Is that what you’re saying?

Jack: I am merely acknowledging that it’s hard for all of us.

Phyllis: You know what would have helped me, jack? Honestly, what would have helped me is if you put your foot down and you made it clear to diane that you would not allow her to manipulate me and constantly prod and provoke me past my limits.

Jack: Let me make sure I’m hearing you clearly. You can’t control yourself until I find some way to control diane?

Phyllis: Oh, god, that is not what I’m saying, and you know it. I mean, this coming from a man who claims he loves me.

Jack: Do not weaponize my feelings for you.

Phyllis: You claim you love me, but you won’t go the limit for me. I mean, we could help each other through this, but you won’t talk about it. And you won’t talk to me at all. You just keep on putting up a wall and shutting me out. We hit the bike trails every weekend

Nate: It’s all good. Amanda, do you know if imani got any further with terminating elena’s contract with newman media?

Amanda: Uh, I’m not sure, but I can check with her.

Nate: Don’t worry about it. I’ll check with her myself.

[ Sighs ]

Elena: Hmm.

[ Chuckles ] Mm.

[ Door opens ]

Nate: Hi. Oh, good to hear your voice, too, imani.

Mariah: So, it sounds like you’re feeling pretty good about your decision to let your mom back into your life?

Kyle: She knows her reputation precedes her, so she’s trying really hard to show me that she can be trusted. Seeing her comforting harrison this morning — it hit me on a level I can’t explain.

Mariah: You said it earlier. That moment reminded you of the feelings that you had for your mother when you were harrison’s age. It also made you remember the grief and the loss when you lost a parent.

Kyle: Yeah. The fear, the confusion, the shock. I remember it all.

Mariah: And now the person that caused all that pain is back in your life, but she’s actually doing the right thing now. She’s comforting a heartbroken little boy.

Kyle: I mean, there’s no way she could go back the past and erase what she put me through. But being there for harrison — it’s about as close as she could get.

Jack: Do I wish we could salvage the magic we had between us? Absolutely. But things like today keep happening. I started my day thinking, “I’ve got to get my grandson through what is perhaps the toughest day of his life.” What did you focus on? Bringing diana down.

Phyllis: Okay, that’s not fair or true. I called my daughter because i knew that they broke the news to harrison about ashland. I wanted to see how he was doing. I would have never gone off on diane if I knew that harrison was here.

Jack: Would it have really made a difference?

Phyllis: Yes. I-I mean, I’m — I don’t understand why you keep doing this to me. I don’t get it. You have forgiven diane for every single thing that she has done, not only to your family, but to me. But I have a zero-tolerance policy here. I mean, I don’t get the benefit of the doubt. Why? Why is that?

Jack: Diane is not getting any free pass. Even if she continues to come through for harrison and kyle, i could never possibly trust her completely because I know her. I also know you. And even though you are the most captivating, interesting, beautiful person I have ever met, even though my heart beats faster every time I’m with you, you just said it yourself — you can’t give up this feud with diane.

Phyllis: And that seems to trump everything. Why is that?

Jack: Because the stakes are too high. Because it’s not just my own heart I’m protecting here. I have to think about harrison and kyle and summer getting caught in the crossfire. I won’t have that… no matter how much I love you.

Chance: If it’s about locke’s death, it hasn’t leaked yet, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Nick: How long have you been there?

Chance: I’m surprised to find you here, man. I was looking for your sister.

Nick: Just came to pick up this.

Chance: Been trying to get a hold of her. Haven’t had any luck. And I’d actually like to speak to the both of you. She in?

Nick: You’re gonna have to settle with just me. Vick left early this morning, so she’s far away from this nightmare already.

Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Jack: Looks like you could use that.

Kyle: Yeah. Big time.

Jack: Couldn’t sleep?

Kyle: Summer and I were up all night discussing how to tell harrison about ashland’s death.

Jack: Hardest thing in the world.

Kyle: Every time I see my son’s smiling face, I just — I wish I could hold onto his innocence a moment longer.

Jack: Breaks my heart. Telling that kid that “father” is dead. You know, much as we didn’t like ashland, harrison was crazy about him.

Kyle: Even worse, there was no goodbye. I know how excruciating that can be. It kills me to think about how much loss my son has had in his young life. First tara and now this.

Jack: Keep in mind, he gained a wonderful father and mother in you and summer.

Kyle: Yeah.

Jack: Two people who will always look out for him and will always put his interests first.

Kyle: Yeah, and as much as i despise what ashland did, I — god, I wish he was alive and well. I would give anything not to have to break this news to my son. I — how can he understand?

Jack: I remember traveling to switzerland to tell you the news that your mother had died.

Kyle: I remember it, too. It still haunts me. That’s why I know harrison will likely never forget this day.

Adam: Hi there.

Sharon: Hey. Morning. What can I get you?

Adam: Uh, coffee, black. Maybe, uh, throw a shot of espresso in there just for grins.

Sharon: You got it.

Adam: What’s all this?

Sharon: Oh, tessa’s having a minor procedure done on her vocal chords this morning, so i put together a little care package for her.

Adam: Well, that sounds nice.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Oh, I, uh — I better take this.

Sharon: Yeah. Go ahead.

Adam: Hi. Hey, thanks for booking the flight. Business class, please. Uh, just one seat. Beautiful. Uh, you can just send the ticket straight to my phone. Okay. Alright. Thanks, paula. Have a good one.

Sharon: Going out of town? Solo? Well, I assume that means that you and sally didn’t end up working things out.

Mariah: You’re gonna be in and out, like an hour, tops.

Tessa: Yeah. Yeah, we’ll see.

Mariah: And this doctor is the best. You know that, right? Like, he’s done thousands of these procedures. It’s — it’s literally just routine for him.

Tessa: Yeah. No, no. I-I-I — I know what he said, but, you know, I’m still nervous. Surgery is still surgery, and these are my vocal chords.

Mariah: Well, maybe think of it as a forced vacation day, where you get to eat ice pops and rest and have people wait on you hand and foot. What could be better? Okay. I know that this is more than just jitters. So, why don’t you tell me what you’re really worried about?

Tessa: I-I don’t want to jinx anything.

Mariah: Like if you say it out loud somehow opens the door to it?

Tessa: Maybe. I — ugh. I know how dumb that sounds.

Mariah: No, no, it doesn’T. It doesn’t at all. But if you say it out loud, it could possibly lose all its power. Poof! Gone. You know, things are always scarier in the dark than they are in the light.

Tessa: Okay. I just, um — I can’t help but think… accidents happen. And one of the vocal nodes are way worse than they were originally thinking. And what if I — I lose my one true talent — singing? What if my music career is over? We hit the bike trails every weekend

Mariah: Tessa, you have so many incredible gifts, alright? And if you don’t know that… I’m gonna spend the rest of my life telling you, okay?

[ Laughs ]

Tessa: I’ll hold you to that.

Mariah: You kidding me? It’s the easiest promise I’ve ever made. And I will make you another one. The procedure is going to go brilliantly, okay? You’re not gonna lose your singing voice. I mean, if anything, you’re gonna emerge from this with a stronger, healthier, more golden voice than ever. So, why don’t we make a deal, okay? I’m going to take all of your fear and all of your anxiety and I’m gonna hold on to it so you can just focus on being positive — okay? — And healing.

Tessa: Deal.

Mariah: Okay. Come here.

Adam: Why would you think sally and I re-uniting would even be a possibility?

Sharon: Um…I guess I just misspoke. What I meant to say was, um… no. You know what? We are all adults here. I’m not gonna have a secret conversation with your girlfriend about you.

Adam: Okay, sally is my ex-girlfriend. That has not changed.

Sharon: Sorry to hear that.

Adam: Why?

Sharon: After you and i spoke, sally came and confided in me again. She seemed very confused and upset about why you would give her one reason for the breakup and then give me another.

Adam: Okay, well, if you’ll let me explain, there’s actually a really good reason for that.

Sharon: No, no, please. You don’t have to. It’s irrelevant. We really don’t have to get into the “he said/she said” or why you gave two versions of the story. The thing that, um, struck me the most, I guess, was that she really seems to love you and, you know, she accepts you, flaws and all, as you are.

Adam: Yeah. Well, she would be better off if she didn’T. She’d be better hating me.

Sharon: Yeah, I’m sure it would make it easier for you if you had succeeded at running her off forever.

Adam: You saw what a spectacle she made of herself in here. I mean, if anybody saw that from newman, her days would be numbered.

Sharon: I agree with you, and I’m sure she’s aware of that. And yet she did it anyway. So, what does that tell you?

Adam: Mm. That her priorities are out of whack.

Sharon: Well, that’s not for you to decide.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Actually, it is, okay? Sally’s the most driven person that I have ever met. She has spent her whole life chasing professional success and respectability. And now that she’s gotten them, I’m not gonna let her lose those things, especially when my relationships are destined to crash and burn.

Sharon: Well, you don’t know that. That might not be true. Hey, who knows? Maybe she is the person you were meant to spend the rest of your life with. But I feel like I can be objective about this because, you know, before you two met, I was one of the few people in town who you could count on to have your back.

Adam: And I promise not to burden you with that responsibility — again, if that’s what you’re worried about, okay? I don’t need to be with anybody right now.

Sharon: Everybody needs people in their lives who care about them. It was good for you when you had sally in your life. And, you know, that’s why i convinced her to not give up on you — to prove to you that you are more important to her than any job. And she was very impassioned, so I assume that’s what she did.

Adam: Oh, you are right. She came to me, and she said she was going to quit newman.

Sharon: Which surely made you realize what you’d be giving up by continuing to reject her, right? Or am I wrong? Have you really hardened your heart to sally? Because I thought that you had feelings for her, too.

Chance: I tell you, it’s pretty strange timing for victoria to bolt like that — I mean, the night after her ex dies in her house.

Nick: There was no bolting involved. Vick went to pick up her kids from camp. Then they’re gonna stop by their favorite water park on the way home. Nothing changes, except I don’t know how she’s gonna be able to enjoy the day because she has to tell her children that their stepfather died in a car crash.

Chance: That’s tough news to break, especially to children.

Nick: I just hope she can find some comfort in spending time with katie and johnny.

Chance: Has she considered having billy grab them instead? You know, given that there is an ongoing investigation happening?

Nick: Billy’s away on business. And why would victoria need to stay in town? She didn’t do anything wrong.

Chance: I didn’t say she did.

Nick: You kind of implied it.

Chance: Look, I came here, and I was hoping to get a little bit more insight into ashland’s frame of mind.

Nick: Look, I thought I was pretty clear last night. Ashland was in a complete rage when he was going after my sister.

Chance: I understand. I was just looking for some additional nuance.

Nick: Like what?

Chance: For instance, in your opinion, would you say ashland was in a state of mind to take his own life when he left after your altercation?

Nick: Look, man, I couldn’t tell you if ashland was suicidal. Like I said, I wasn’t there when he left. Now, I can tell you he was homicidal while he was attacking my sister. And then he turned on me when i stepped in to try and protect her. Honestly, chance, I didn’t think he could breathe, let alone drive a car.

Chance: And that is the most confusing part about all this.

Nick: Look, I wish like hell I could tell you what happened after victoria and I left ashland for dead.

Adam: You’re not completely wrong. I do have feelings for —

had feelings for sally.

Sharon: Okay, come on. It’s me you’re talking to. I’m not buying the past tense.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: Okay. Why are you cutting out someone who cares about you and appears to see the best in you and might even bring the best out of you?

Adam: Sharon, it’s — it’s complicated.

Sharon: You know what? When you find someone who you really match up with, it shouldn’t be complicated and you shouldn’t take it for granted.

Adam: Look, as I already told you, um, this is what’s best for everybody, okay? I need a break. And the trip that you heard me booking was for vegas.

Sharon: Really? Given your history there, why would you want to go back there? And don’t forget — I’m the one who brought you home from vegas. I wouldn’t want to see you slide into old bad habits. So, how long are you staying?

Adam: I’m taking off now.

[ Laughter ] Okay, you have a family to attend to, and I have a trip to pack for. Good luck with the procedure today, tessa.

Tessa: Thank you.

Adam: Take care, ladies.

Sharon: How was your walk?

Mariah: It was great. Yeah. I was just wondering if I could do a coffee to go ’cause we’re gonna be heading to the surgery center in a little bit.

Sharon: Of course. Um, tessa, I don’t suppose you’re allowed to have anything before your procedure?

Tessa: [ Sighs ] No. I wish because I just really want a hot mocha because it would be the last time that i would be able to have one for a while. I won’t tell if you won’T.

Sharon: [ Laughs ] Totally understand that. After what I’ve been through, anything medical just gives me the jitters.

Tessa: Yeah, I — I’m nervous, but I’m less nervous because this one has been such a soothing presence.

Summer: Are you ready?

Jack: I want to help in any way I can.

Kyle: Thanks, dad. I appreciate the support, but i feel summer and I should tell our son the news. I’d be grateful if you were around to help pick up any pieces afterwards. I know harrison’s grandpa will be an important part of the healing process.

Jack: Of course.

Summer: I left him playing with the nanny upstairs, but we shouldn’t put this off. The press is gonna be all over this pretty soon, and harrison is sensitive. If people are buzzing about it, he’s liable to pick up on something.

Jack: You know what? I’ll go up and get harrison, give you a few minutes to prepare, alright?

Kyle: Okay. Thanks. God, I’m dreading this.

Summer: It’s gonna be so difficult. You know, when harrison is sad about the littlest of things, it usually gets me going, too.

Kyle: Yeah, the shock will be bad enough, but I wonder how this will affect him long term. Losing a parent as a kid… you — you suddenly realize there’s no such thing as forever. It turned my world upside down, colored everything since.

Sharon: I know how tough this is for you. It’s triggering painful memories, I’m sure.

Kyle: Remembering what I was put through as a kid brings up all the old times, the overwhelming grief. I have to wonder if my mother considered the pain her actions caused me, the way I’m considering harrison’s pain now. Did she ever imagine how difficult it would be for my dad to have to tell me that my mother was never coming home?

Summer: [ Breathes deeply ] Look, if you aren’t ready, i don’t want to rush you into this.

Kyle: No. No. I may understand the pain, but i also understand that you can get through this. I can do this. I can do this for my son.

Summer: We can do this.

Nikki: Oh, hello, chance.

Chance: Hello, nikki. Very nice to see you.

Nikki: You too. How are you, darling?

Nick: Hey, mom.

Nikki: I’m glad you’re here. I wanted you to know how grateful I am for you coming to victoria’s aid last night and that you were able to track down ashland so quickly.

Chance: I’m just doing my job.

Nikki: Well, I know you understand the terrible toll this has taken on abby’s siblings. If you’re finished speaking with nicholas, I haven’t seen him since he rescued his sister, and I’d like to spend a little time with him.

Chance: Yeah, absolutely. I think, uh, nick has said all he has to say. Unless you want to add something?

Nick: No. I’m good.

Chance: Okay. Well, do me a favor. If either of you speak to victoria, please have her call me.

Nikki: We will. Give our love to abby and dominic.

Chance: Of course.

Nick: See ya.

Chance: Excuse me.

Nikki: Oh, son, I’m so grateful that you were there for your sister. Thank god you showed up when you did. And I’m so sorry about everything you went through. How are you feeling?

Nick: Like I don’t deserve to be thanked.

Nikki: You’re blaming yourself, aren’t you? You know…

[ Sighs ] We need to get out of here. We need to go someplace where we can talk without being interrupted by work and not reminded of the dreaded newman/locke regime.

[ Folder thuds ]

Sharon: Are you leaving for the procedure soon?

Mariah: Uh, yeah. We just went on a little walk, you know, to clear our heads.

Sharon: Okay. Because, um, I got you a little care package. I put it together so tessa can have that when you bring her home, and I plan to stock your fridge with soothing things to eat and drink.

Tessa: Aww.

Mariah: Mom, that is so sweet of you.

Tessa: Oh, it is. Thank you, sharon.

Sharon: Well, it’s my pleasure.

Tessa: Uh, I’m gonna take it upstairs now and gather my things for the doctor’S.

Mariah: Yeah. I’ll be here waiting.

Tessa: I’m so lucky to have a mother-in-law that feels like a mom.

Sharon: Aww.

Tessa: Thank you.

Sharon: That is the loveliest thing anyone has ever said to me. Hey, what’s wrong? A minute ago, you were all smiles.

Mariah: I’m trying to keep a brave face for tessa’s sake, but the truth is, I am scared to death about today. Ladies, six minutes please…

Sharon: I am so sorry. I had no idea you were this scared. I thought you and tessa were fine, and the procedure is just very —

Mariah: It’s routine. Yeah. I know. I know. I just — I didn’t even realize I was feeling this way until earlier when — when tessa said that she was scared. She’s terrified she’s gonna lose her singing voice.

Sharon: [ Gasps ]

Mariah: I guess just seeing how afraid she was made me afraid…’cause I can’t bear the thought of tessa being in any kind of pain.

Sharon: I understand that feeling, wanting the one you love to be okay, even more so than yourself. But, hey, that’s marriage. And you two have each other. And you have a great doctor. And you’re gonna be okay. You’ll get through this.

Tessa: [ Sighs ] Okay. I’m ready.

Mariah: [ Smooches ] Let’s do this.

Nikki: Now, I know you, and i know you’re churning inside. Please tell me you know it wasn’t your fault. You are not responsible for ashland’s death.

Nick: How can I do that when I don’t know?

Nikki: From what i understand, you probably saved your sister’s life.

Nick: I don’t know how much vick told you. I threw a punch, you know? I knocked ashland down. He hit his head on the fireplace. He was bleeding and unconscious.

Nikki: Alright, baby, stop. You don’t have to keep retelling it. I know the rest, all of it.

Kyle: There are some things we need to tell you, buddy. Sometimes accidents happen… and people get hurt. And it can be sad and scary. It’s a hard part of life.

Summer: Do you understand what an accident is?

Kyle: Hey, remember that movie we saw, where the pony’s dad got hurt and he wasn’t able to be around to watch the pony grow up? It’s kind of like that. Unfortunately… father won’t be able to come see us anymore.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Jack: I’ll get that. Uh, hi. I don’t mean to be rude, but this is not a good time. We’re dealing with something right now.

Diane: Oh. I’m — I’m sorry. I guess I should have phoned first.

Jack: Probably.

Harrison: Dee dee!

Kyle: Hey, stay with me. Stay with me. Come here. Harrison, do you understand what we just told you? Father died. Which means he’s gone. He won’t be able to come back and visit anymore.

Harrison: No, father told me he’ll come back.

Summer: Let’s step outside for a moment.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

[ Door closes ]

Summer: Ashland was found in his car in a ravine. Police believe he died instantly.

Diane: What?! Oh, I’m — I’m so sorry.

Summer: Diane, I think you should go now. Harrison has a lot to process, if he even can, and this is bringing up a lot of bad memories for kyle.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I — I realize that. Which is exactly why I should stay. Please — please, let me go back inside. Please let me try to help.

Nick: How much do you know about what happened last night?

Nikki: I know that you and victoria both thought that ashland was dead when you left the house. And if anybody understands the horror that you’re feeling, it’s me. Because I thought that I had killed jt.

Nick: I remember.

Nikki: And even though I knew I was justified, I still blamed myself. I was haunted by it. I was defending victoria, just as you were, but I would do the whole thing again in a heartbeat if I had to.

Nick: So would I.

Nikki: I’m sorry things played out the way they did. But, honey, I’m so grateful you were there to intervene. I mean, otherwise, we might be planning your sister’s funeral and ashland would still be out there walking the streets.

Nick: Look, I get what you’re saying, but I cannot shake the visual of ashland lying on that hearth unconscious —

Nikki: Honey, please stop. Now, I want you to hear what I am saying. You are not responsible for what happened to ashland last night, and I’m not even gonna pretend to mourn that monster. His death was his own doing, but he was still alive the last time you saw him. He got up, he walked out, he got in his car and drove off. It is not your fault that he died in a car accident. I need you to fully understand that. You are not to blame for his death.

Diane: Hi, harrison. Sounds like you’re having a big talk.

Kyle: Yes, we are.

Diane: I know mommy and daddy shared some sad news with you, how father got hurt and he won’t be back. That’s kind of hard to believe or understand, isn’t it? Yeah. Hey, you and I just saw father at the park, didn’t we? I heard him telling you how much he loves you and how he had to go away on a trip, but that he’d be back soon.

[ Sighs ] But sometimes things happen in life that we aren’t expecting and our plans change, like — oh, do you remember the day that we were going to the park and then, when we went outside, it started to rain, so we decided to stay home? Yeah. Well, that’s — that’s one way that plans can change when something that we can’t control happens to us. And then all of a sudden, things aren’t the way we thought they’d be. But that doesn’t mean that father didn’t love you more than anything else in this world. I know that if father could be here with you, he would be. But this is just one of those times that something bad happened and he can’t be. Show me where your heart is.

[ Chuckles ] What a smart and brave boy you are. That’s — that’s absolutely right.

Kyle: Father’s still in there, in your heart.

Diane: Yeah.

Kyle: Along with all the other people you love. For copd,

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: Hey. You know what? You just missed the girls. They’re on their way to tessa’s procedure, and they’re both a little nervous about it, but i think that’s probably natural. Everything’s gonna be fine.

Nick: Yeah, I’m gonna send them flowers to their apartment later.

Sharon: Good. Um, you seem a little — I don’t know — preoccupied. What’s on your mind?

Nick: I came by here last night looking for you, but I ran into sally instead, and this was after having a conversation with my mother that wasn’t as comforting as she intended it to be.

Sharon: Well, I’m here now. I’m gonna pour you a cup of coffee, and you can tell me all about it.

Nick: Okay. It, uh — this hasn’t hit the news yet… but something happened and i need to tell you about it.

Sharon: Okay.

Nick: Ashland died last night. The police found him in his car at the bottom of a ravine.

Adam: Chance?

Chance: Hey, man.

Adam: How’s it going?

Chance: Oh, you know, keeping busy. How about yourself?

Adam: Uh, I’m actually taking off to vegas for a bit, so I’ll make sure to play a round poker on your behalf.

Chance: I take it you don’t know about ashland?

Adam: Well, since I have no idea what you’re talking about, apparently not.

Chance: I guess the news hasn’t broken yet, but I’m surprised your family hasn’t told you.

Adam: Well, trust me when i say I am permanently out of the loop when it comes to newman news. Why? What has locke done now?

Chance: Well, he died in an accident. At least, that’s the official version for now.

Sharon: You know, I feel bad for you and victoria. My heart goes out to you. It must have been a hellish night. First there you are, defending victoria against ashland. You don’t know where the man is. He’s out there somewhere, ready for more violence, and then you get the call about the accident.

Nick: You left out the part where I thought I killed ashland before he got up and vanished. I still have no idea how that happened.

Sharon: Well, if you talked to nikki, you know what I think.

Nick: On account of jt?

Sharon: Mm. I know that it’s possible for you to be absolutely certain that someone died and then didn’T. You know, nikki only thought thathe killed jt. And you only thought that you killed ashland. But that’s where the comparison ends.

Nick: [ Sighs ] How do you mean?

Sharon: Well, you didn’t have to wait months before finding out that that wasn’t true. In many ways, you’re very lucky that ashland got up and walked away last night. I brought in ensure max protein

Diane: Ooh. Alright, I should go so you can be with your mommy and your daddy and your grandpa.

Harrison: Dee dee, don’t go.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, maybe if it’s alright, we could go outside and hunt for leaves. Would you like that?

Summer: I think that’s a great idea. Harrison could use some time with his friend right now.

Kyle: Actually, harrison, dee dee is more than a good friend. She’s my mom, your grandmother, just like jack is my dad and your grandfather. And I know that dee dee loves you very much. And we’re so happy she’s here to help us on a hard day.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Harrison, can I have another hug? Aww. Thank you. [ Sniffles ]

Sharon: I’m getting the feeling that this conversation isn’t really helping. What’s gnawing at you?

Nick: I’m just trying to wrap my head around how ashland vanished and then later ended up dead in his car. I’m telling you, he had no pulse. Vick tried cpr.

Sharon: Yep. Been there. But it is clear if ashland was there when you left to go out for air and then he wasn’t there anymore when you came back — because he wasn’t dead. You didn’t kill him.

Nick: I want to believe that.

Sharon: Why would you doubt it? What, do you think that the head injury might have caused the crash? That’s speculation. Blaming yourself for all of the actions that the man took that night on his own accord, including attacking victoria in the first place.

Nick: At first, I did think him falling down and hurting his head played some part in his accident, but there’s just more to it than that. I mean, there’s a whole part of the sequence that just doesn’t sit right with me.

Sharon: Like what?

Nick: My dad showing up at victoria’s just after we discovered that ashland was gone. It doesn’t make sense. I’m trying to fight the feeling, but the thing is, with my dad there, the simple explanation is probably too simple. When victor newman is involved, things tend to get very complicated.

Sharon: Well, did you ask him point blank?

Nick: I did.

Sharon: And?

Nick: I still don’t know what went down, sharon, because the truth is, I can’t trust my dad to tell the truth.

Adam: What do you mean, “official version”? I mean, is the guy dead or is he not dead?

Chance: Very much so.

Adam: Then why would you use that phrase? I mean, is there another theory floating around out there?

Nick: Thank you. Listen, I know I told you that I would be free to talk about work whenever you need me. But now is not a good time.

Sally: Believe me, I am fine with not talking about newman media. I actually just came by here hoping to run into sharon because we had a good talk earlier about your brother actually, who happens to be the most confusing, infuriating, and exasperating human I have ever known.

Nick: Didn’t you earlier say you were sorry you ever got involved with him in the first place? I mean, I guess I can understand why you want to commiserate with sharon. She certainly can relate.

Sally: Yeah, but, I mean, sharon has been just as baffled by adam’s decisions lately as i have, but you could tell that we had a real connection.

Nick: Listen, listen, listen, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. But I’m sorry, I cannot talk about the drama between you and adam right now. It is the least of my concerns.

Sally: Your bad mood seems to be more than just a simple, frustrating day at the office. What happened?

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Michael: That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. Alright. Done. Everyone on your security team has been briefed.

Victor: Alright. The less is said, the better.

Michael: I’ll make sure that’s perfectly clear.

Victor: And by the way, I want to thank you, michael. I appreciate what you have done tonight. Nice to know that I can call on my old friend michael baldwin to help my family through a very difficult time. I’ll not soon forget this. I promise you.

Summer: [ Sighs ] Yes, okay, good. ‘Cause, honestly, it has been a struggle being caught in the middle between you and kyle, and you and jack, all while I’m trying to juggle this international move and getting harrison resettled and then relaunching a major company from its new headquarters. Nick: No offense, but I don’t want to talk about tonight, or anything else for that matter. Don’t take it personally.

Sally: I won’T. I mean, it’s obvious that you’ve been through the wringer. Maybe you should just go home and get some sleep.

Nick: Yeah, I’d really like to do that, but I can’t because I’m waiting around for a bunch of other shoes to drop.

Sally: Well, that sounds ominous.

Nick: I’m not trying to sound mysterious. In fact, I’m sure you’ll hear all about it when you show up to work in the morning.

Sally: Yeah, um… about that.

[ Sighs ] We won’t be seeing each other at work in the morning.

Nick: Why?

Sally: Look, I wasn’t going to say anything, because you didn’t want to talk about work. But I have made a decision. I’m going to call victoria in the morning and tell her that I changed my mind. I’m going to respectfully decline the ceo position.

Michael: [ Chuckles ] Thank you for being so considerate of my work-life balance. But I am not about to let you talk with chance without having your attorney present. Look, he may be your son-in-law, but he’s a damn good cop. And, um, he’s going to have a lot of questions.

Victor: Yeah.

[ Cellphone rings ] Talking about the devil. Yes, chance? What news do you have?

Nick: What happened? Why change your mind? I mean, earlier, you were so fired up about leading newman media. You pitched yourself as the perfect person for the job.

Sally: I know, and i so appreciate you and victoria giving me a shot at it.

Nick: Then why walk away now? Is this some kind of negotiating tactic?

Sally: No, it is nothing like that. I just — I learned something earlier. Adam was in here tonight, and I heard him talking with sharon. I overheard him telling her what I had suspected all along. He admitted that the only reason he broke up with me was because he felt like it was best for me. He didn’t admit it to my face, but it’s a real motive behind him breaking things off.

Nick: Do you think we don’t know that already? And who cares? It shouldn’t change anything.

Sally: Yeah, but it does, because I’m not okay with him making that sacrifice.

Nick: Well, adam doesn’t care what you think, obviously. He made this decision without consulting you, and he’s lying to you, and he’s continuing to lie to you.

Sally: It was a terrible, stupid mistake on adam’s part, but I know he believes he’s doing the right thing.

Nick: You’re just making excuses for him, just like sharon did and chelsea and just like victoria did for ashland.

Sally: That is not what I’m doing.

Nick: Sally, what is wrong with you? You’ve got this incredible opportunity. It is right in front of your face. You just have to grab it. And you’re willing to throw it all away for this guy who stomped on your heart with both feet. Is this all the self-respect you have?

Sally: Why are you being so harsh? I bet this has more to do with what your sister just went through than it does with me. So please don’t put all your baggage on me. You don’t know me that well.

Nick: You’re right, you’re right, and I’m sorry, and you can do whatever you want. But please don’t confuse adam treating like dirt as this sign of this incredible love that you have. Don’t do that. A lot of women have made that mistake with him.

[ Cellphone pings ]

[ Sighs ] I got to go, sally. I really hope you reconsider this terrible and rash decision that you’re making.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Oh, trust me, I know what it’s like to juggle home life and business. Trust me.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: I know. [ Chuckles ] I’m not doing much of that anymore, but, you know, the grand phoenix is now a well-oiled machine. It leaves me a little bit of time for other things.

Summer: I’m sure there’s still plenty to keep you busy.

Phyllis: You know, not really. So, I mean, if you need a little bit of help, I’m here.

Summer: Oh, I mean, I wasn’t complaining. I know that kyle and i are going to figure things out.

Phyllis: Oh, for sure, for sure. I believe in you. Listen, I’m sure it was difficult. Chelsea, you know, pulling out of her commitment as lead designer.

Summer: Oh, yeah. I mean, it was, but I really can’t fault her for making that decision. I mean, she’s got to prioritize her mental health. We all know how fragile that can be. I’m just glad that she did it now, rather than later, after we already invested tons of time and energy and money into promoting her new line.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Yeah. What about the person she recommended? How’s that going?

Summer: We’re in talks, so, hopefully, that’ll work out.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. Well, I can’t help you with that.

[ Both chuckle ] Yeah. How about marketing? I mean, the position that you offered me — is that still available?

Summer: Mom, that was months ago. Of course I filled the position.

Phyllis: Of course, of course, but I just figured maybe because you guys are relocating to genoa city, maybe the person in that position didn’t want to relocate.

Summer: I’m a bit confused as to why this is coming up now. Are you seriously asking if you can come to work at marchetti? Cleaning spell, cleaning spell…

Phyllis: Well, I don’t know why you’re so surprised that I’m bringing up this job at marchetti. I mean, you don’t know how close I was to, you know, moving to italy and kissing everything here in genoa city goodbye.

Summer: Still, you had good reasons for turning it down.

Phyllis: Yeah, I had good reasons. I just wasn’t ready to leave. But, I mean, now that you’re moving the headquarters to genoa city, that’s amazing. If I would have taken it, it would have been the best of both worlds.

Summer: I thought you really were happy running the hotel.

Phyllis: Don’t get me wrong. I really love it there. But, you know, it’s not like it was in the beginning. You know, when you’re trying to create a business and get everything running, it’s very, very challenging and rewarding. I mean, you know.

Summer: [ Sighs ] Mom, I need you to be really honest with me right now. How much of this sudden interest in working in marchetti has to do with the fact that kyle just hired diane?

Chloe: Hey, sally.

Sally: Hi. Thank you for coming by so late and on such short notice.

Chloe: Yeah. Not a problem. The kids are asleep and, well, kevin has been so supportive. He knows how excited I am about our new venture.

Sally: Yeah, um, about that.

Chloe: Oh, no. Bad news? Did nick and victoria rescind their job offer?

Sally: No, no, it’s nothing like that. The job is mine if I still want it.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] “Still want it”? Is there even a question?

Sally: I just have to admit, I’m a little torn over this whole thing.

Chloe: Okay, it isn’t a total shock. When we spoke earlier, you weren’t as enthusiastic as I expected you’d be. But what’s up? Are you offended that the newmans want you to go through a probationary period, or are you having a last-minute crisis of confidence?

Sally: No, I know that I can do this job. I told nick and victoria my ideas, and they loved it. It’s why they were willing to give me this chance.

Chloe: Okay. So, then what’s the problem?

Chloe: Oh.

[ Scoffs ] This is about adam… isn’t it?

Nick: Dad, michael, what’s the latest?

Victor: Son, I just got a call from chance. He’s going to come over and fill us in.

Nick: Did he say anything on the phone about what they’ve learned?

Victor: Unh-unh.

Nick: How about vick? How’s she doing?

Victor: Uh, she is resting at the ranch. You know, your mother is taking good care of her. I don’t want her to be upset by any news that chance may have.

Nick: Yeah, she’s, uh, been through enough already.

Victor: Boy, has she ever. My heart goes out to your sister. My goodness. I’ll fill her in, in the morning.

Nick: You know, you two seem remarkably calm, considering what has happened. You sure you don’t know more?

Michael: I see no reason for alarm at this point. If ashland hasn’t been located yet, I have no doubt he will be found soon. Chance has organized a thorough search.

Victor: I have my men watching all over town. Suffice it to say, the noose around that bastard’s neck is tightening. And when he is caught, victoria can press charges.

Michael: In my opinion, there’s more than enough to charge ashland and keep him in jail while he awaits trial. And you witnessed the struggle he had with victoria. And we can always mention the fact that he defied kyle’s restraining order. I mean, the man is clearly a threat to the safety of the community.

Victor: There certainly is that.

Nick: So, that’s why you two seem so nonchalant about this? You both think the end of the actual locke nightmare is coming?

Victor: Well, I’m certain this will all turn out the way it should.

[ Telephone rings ] Send him in.

[ Receiver clicks ]

[ Doorknob rattles ]

Chance: So, as promised, I’m here with an update.

Victor: Hello, chance.

Michael: Thank you for coming over. I know it’s been a long, busy night for you.

Nick: Last time we talked, you said the police found a car at the bottom of the ravine. Was it ashland?

Chance: Yes, it was.

Nick: Was he in it?

Chance: Yes. He was behind the wheel.

Nick: Alive?

Chance: No. Ashland locke is dead.

Who’s on it with jardiance?

Chloe: So, was I right about adam earlier? Is he angry with you for staying on at newman when he decided to quit? Is that why he broke up with you?

Sally: [ Sighs ] You have it backwards, chloe. Adam broke up with me so that I can stay here. He knew that victoria would never agree to keep me on as long as we were still together, that she could never trust me to somehow not be conspiring with him. So he came up with some bogus story about not wanting to be with me because victor wouldn’t approve.

Chloe: Oh, my god. That is just so hurtful.

Sally: I knew that that’s not how he really felt, which is exactly what you saw us arguing about earlier. And then tonight, I confirmed it. I overheard him admitting to sharon that he only cut me loose so that our relationship wouldn’t get in the way of my job here at newman media.

Chloe: And let me guess, you confronted him right away.

Sally: Of course. I told him that this was a huge mistake and that he would regret it for the rest of his life, once I had moved on with someone else.

Chloe: Good for you.

Sally: But then I also

[Sighs] Told him that I didn’t want to get the job this way and that I would

[Inhaling deeply] Be turning in my resignation first thing in the morning.

Chloe: Okay. I — I’m not going to freak out right away, because I’m sure you just said that in the heat of the moment, and by now you’ve calmed down and realize that quitting would just be crazy. Right?

Phyllis: Summer, why do you think that everything has to do with diane jenkins now?

Summer: Because I know you, mom. It would be just like you to decide that you needed to be on the marchetti premises so that you could keep a close eye on her.

Phyllis: No, no, that’s not what I’m doing. Trust me when I say I am doing everything to keep out of that woman’s path. Absolutely everything. And in fact, that’s the reason I never brought up the marchetti position in the first place, because of her. Seriously. But then I said, “you know what, phyllis? You know what? You cannot let that woman influence your life.”

Summer: Somehow I find that hard to believe.

Phyllis: Well, it’s true. Believe it. I mean, honestly, do I think it’s a mistake that kyle hired her? Yeah. Do I think it’s going to be a disaster? Yes. But it’s a decision that kyle made, and he’s going to have to suffer the consequences.

Summer: Okay, so, you’re basically telling me that you’re hoping that hiring diane turns into a catastrophe that’s going to blow up in all of our faces so that you’re proven right.

Phyllis: Summer, why do you keep on talking about her? You’re the one doing it, not me. Let’s not even talk about diane jenkins. It’s not about her. It’s about us working together, doing something creative together. I mean, we had so much fun when we worked together before. Remember?

Summer: Of course I do.

Phyllis: Yes, so that’s what I’m talking about. We need to do that again. Imagine flying all over the world, going to fashion shows, meeting top designers. How much fun, just working together, mother and daughter. I mean, that’s the reason why you wanted to hire me in the first place.

Nick: So, ashland’s dead? I was hoping he would survive the crash.

Chance: Well, sorry, nick.

Nick: Did your investigators say anything about it? Did he die from injuries sustained during the crash?

Michael: Those are questions for the medical examiner.

Chance: Yeah, we’ll have to wait for the autopsy report to know that for sure.

Nick: Alright, can you just please keep us posted on results?

Chance: I’ll share what seems necessary.

Victor: Anyway, chance, thank you for delivering this extraordinary news. Rather tragic, isn’t it?

Chance: Would you like to break the news to victoria?

Victor: Yeah, I’ll take care of that.

Chance: Okay. Victor, you never mentioned how you ended up at victoria’s place. Did she tell you what happened? Or nick?

Victor: Neither. My security team told me that something was amiss.

Chance: Your security team? Why is this the first time that I’m hearing about this?

Victor: Because that’s the first time you asked me that question, okay? I have no time to tell you. I employed my security team, asked them to watch victoria’s house, once I found out that ashland locke was in town. I wanted her to be safe. They watched her house for a discreet distance.

Chance: Okay, and what did they see?

Victor: They saw nick just go to the front door, knock on it. And then when there was no response, they became suspicious because they knew that victoria was in the house.

Nick: Yeah, I, uh — I just assumed she was asleep, but I didn’t want to leave, because it didn’t feel right. So I went around the side of the house, to the back. Your guys must have seen me do that.

Victor: Yeah.

Chance: Did your guys follow him back there, victor? We hit the bike trails every weekend

Summer: I have to admit, I have been a little bit jealous that kyle is getting to work with his mother when I missed my opportunity to work with mine.

Phyllis: That’s what I’m talking about. I miss it, too.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Oh, let’s make this happen.

Summer: Okay, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves. I still have to run all of this by kyle, and I have a feeling he’s not going to be too thrilled at the prospect of you and diane getting in each other’s faces every day.

Phyllis: Mnh-mnh, that’s not an issue. I’m not going to get in her face, honestly.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: I mean, [Sighs] Yeah, I had a hard time letting go of all the absolutely horrible, horrible things she did to me. And I did throw my relationship with jack in her face, and, you know, that blew up. But, hey, listen, I’m not going to let anything or anyone jeopardize my relationship with you.

Summer: I believe what you’re saying. I just — I’m not sure that you can stop yourself from feuding with diane.

Phyllis: It’s not an issue, summer. I mean, I-I won’t even see her there, really, or if I do, I’ll just stay clear. Listen, why are we talking about diane again? Why are we doing that?

[ Chuckles ] Let’s talk about this job. Okay, so — so, what do you think? Something in marketing?

Summer: Um, no, I’m thinking something much more glamorous for you.

Phyllis: Yeah?

Summer: Maybe, like, company chauffeur. I think you would look really good in one of those hats.

Phyllis: Oh, okay, yeah.

Summer: [ Laughing ]

Phyllis: Alright.

[ Laughs ]

Victor: Well, to answer your question, my security detail stayed on, watching the house. And then, not too long after, they saw nicholas and victoria leave the house in a rather agitated state. That’s when they became alarmed and called me.

Chance: Were you aware of their presence?

Nick: I didn’t notice them. But, honestly, at that point, I was pretty out of it.

Chance: I didn’t see them when I got there, either.

Victor: The reason you didn’t is because I had told the security detail to take the night off, because I knew that nicholas was with victoria and they’d returned to the house.

Chance: Okay, so, what you’re telling me is, your guys — they didn’t approach the house at all, they didn’t look into any of the windows and they didn’t see ashland come or go? Nothing like that?

Michael: I think victor’s answered those questions.

Chance: No, he hasn’T. Not specifically.

Victor: Chance, my man, this is beginning to feel like an interrogation.

Chance: It’s nothing like that, victor. Just trying to gather as much information as I can so I can flesh out my timeline.

Victor: Good. I told you all I know. Michael can give you the respective phone numbers of my security detail, and you can ask them questions. Okay?

Chance: Great.

Victor: Good.

Chance: Send me the info.

Michael: Of course.

Chance: Think I’ve taken up enough of your time.

Victor: Alright. By the way, chance, say hello to abby and dominic, alright?

Chance: I will.

Victor: Okay.

[ Door closes ]

Nick: If you two are keeping something from me, I want to know what it is.

Ashley: [ Sighs ] I have to admit, I am feeling a little shaky about this whole resignation thing. I’ve just been dismissing being ceo as just a job, but the truth of the matter is, this is an amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Chloe: Yeah, I’m glad you realize that.

Sally: And I just ran into nick at crimson lights, and I mentioned to him that I was planning to quit. And he flat-out told me that I would just be one more in a long line of women who would make bad decisions just to impress adam, which is not at all what I thought I was doing. But I — I’m just so confused.

Chloe: Well, I mean, nick didn’t say anything all that different than the advice I gave you earlier.

Sally: I know. Which is exactly why I called you, because I need someone to help me think this through and figure out the right thing to do.

Chloe: Okay. Uh, let’s say that adam said, “I want you to quit this job to prove to me how much you love me.” How would you have reacted to that?

Sally: I mean, that’s not really a fair hypothetical, because he literally said the exact opposite.

Chloe: You bet he did. Because he knew how blatantly selfish and manipulative that would have been and that you never would have fallen for it. And now look what he has you doing with just — ah, with just a touch of reverse psychology.

Sally: You really think that’s what adam’s game is?

[ Chuckles ] Yes. He basically has you begging to accept this sacrifice in honor of your love for him.

Sally: I am not begging him for anything. I would never do that. Damn it. That is exactly what I’ve been doing. He even called me pathetic.

Chloe: You see what’s happening here? You are feeding adam’s massive ego. You are making him believe that he’s more important to you than anything else. Meanwhile, he’s constantly putting you down. Is that what you want the rest of your life to look like?

Sally: Of course not.

Chloe: Good. Good. Because I’m here to tell you that with adam, it’s never going to be just one and done. That’s not how this works. If you think that you’re going to convince him that you’re going to be together forever and everything’s just going to be fine, he is constantly going to be putting your love to the test. He doesn’t know any other way to be in a relationship. So, tell me, are you going to throw away the biggest opportunity of your life for that? Does that sound more fun to you than being ceo of newman media?

Victor: Son, I understand that you’re upset. Okay? You probably feel responsible for ashland locke’s death. You shouldn’t feel responsible. You saved your sister’s life. Where would she be without you having interfered?

Michael: Listen to your father. You may have saved your sister’s life. You had no intention of killing ashland. You didn’t want the man dead.

Victor: It’s not even clear at this point whether your knockout punch is the cause of his death.

Michael: Ashland shouldn’t have been driving at all tonight. And you had nothing to do with him getting behind the wheel of that car.

Victor: Maybe the whole thing wasn’t an accident at all. Maybe he woke up, walked out of the house, got into his car, was probably parked behind victoria’s house, and drove himself to the damn ravine, knowing full well he would kill himself.

Michael: Think about what happened to rey. I mean, he had a heart attack that actually caused him to lose control of the car. Something — something like that could have happened to him tonight.

Nick: Okay, just…

[ Sighs ] Look, I appreciate how badly you two want to let me off the hook, but I highly doubt any of those scenarios actually happened.

Victor: Son, who cares how the man died? Most important thing is, out of our lives. He’s no longer there to endanger the life of your sister! Think about that.

Michael: Listen to your father. He’s right.

Victor: Why don’t you come to the ranch? Relax a little. You need to get away from all this.

I appreciate the offer. Um… I just got to go for a drive, you know, clear my head.

[ Door closes ]

Sally: I just don’t want to believe that adam has been playing mind games with me all along. I honestly think that he wants me to have this opportunity to prove myself.

Chloe: Okay, let’s go with that, then. Let’s say that adam is some truly noble creature who thinks you’re better off to be in this job than in this relationship. He would be totally right.

Sally: I mean, come on, chloe. Isn’t love more important than a job — even a great one?

Chloe: Yes, it totally is. But only if it’s in a real, healthy, stable relationship with the right man. And that’s not the case. I know you don’t want to hear that, but you were so desperately trying to convince yourself that adam’s love is real, that it’s just hidden deep below the surface.

Sally: I just don’t want to believe that he suddenly stopped loving me…

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Sally: …Or that he never did.

Chloe: It’s time to stop fixating on what adam is really feeling or what he really meant when he said x, y, and Z.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: Because when you do that, you completely lose yourself and you forget what matters to you.

Sally: It’s not like that, chloe.

Chloe: Hey, I know what I’m talking about. Chelsea fell into this same trap. That’s why she wasn’t able to move forward in the fashion line. She has lost years of her life to her obsession with adam.

Sally: Okay. [ Sighs ] Even if you are right, and this isn’t healthy or worth saving, I told him that I don’t want to get the job this way, and that’s the truth.

Chloe: He didn’t get you the job. The most you can say is that he got out of your way. Nick and victoria — they asked you to stay in this position after they heard what you had to say. And they loved your ideas.

Sally: Yes, but adam took a chance on me by giving me this job in the first place.

Chloe: And you proved that you deserve to be the boss. With your brilliance and hard work. Do I have to remind you of all the goals you had when we first started working together? You were determined to make people sit up and take notice of you, prove what you could accomplish. So, [Scoffs] Where is that sally spectra?

Sally: You’re right.

Chloe: You bet I am. And what’s more is that you knew what I was going to say. That’s why you asked me to come here. You don’t want to lose this job. And you are not a quitter.

Summer: It was crazy how quickly he picked everything up over there. He was, like, practically fluent by the time we left.

Phyllis: I love seeing you like this, taking on this maternal role. It suits you.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Summer: Hey, dad, come join us.

Nick: Hey.

Phyllis: Um, are you okay? You seem upset.

Nick: Uh, I don’t want to ruin your evening, but something happened. Uh… you’re going to hear about it sooner rather than later. Ashland’s dead. Michael: My tip is, the worst lies

Sally: You’re right. I am not a quitter. Thank you for helping me remember that.

Chloe: So, you’re not going to resign in the morning?

Sally: I am not going anywhere. And you don’t have to worry about me backsliding, because, as you said, if anything, I am persistent.

Chloe: There she is. That’s the sally spectra I know.

Sally: And with your help, I am going to show the newmans and the rest of the world what I am capable of. Who knows what adam wanted or expected out of this whole entire thing. But in the end, it doesn’t matter, because I am going to make the most out of this opportunity that I have been given.

Chloe: Correction — that you’ve earned.

Sally: Yes, that I’ve earned. Thank you, chloe. It really means a lot, having a friend and ally like you. And you have my permission to shake sense into me if ever I forget who we are or how we deserve to be treated.

Chloe: Well, don’t worry, I won’t abuse the privilege. But I’m just so excited. And I am honored to be working with you again. And you said it — invincible. Unstoppable. It is on.

[ Chuckles ]

Sally: Go home, get some sleep, because starting tomorrow, we are moving forward full-throttle.

Victor: I want to thank you for handling everything so damn well. You’re a hell of a lawyer, okay? And a good friend.

Michael: Well, it’s not over yet. You can bet chance will be coming back with more questions.

Victor: I think we have good explanations. Let’s assume that ashland locke woke up after being knocked down by my son, found himself all alone in the house, exited through the back door, where no one could see him, got into a car that he had parked behind victoria’s house, and then realizing he had nothing left in life to live for, he drove through the damn ravine, and that’s where he met his end.

Michael: It’s very straightforward.

Victor: Yeah.

Michael: Completely plausible.

Victor: Right.

Michael: And impossible to prove otherwise.

Victor: Exactly.

Nick: Chance just broke the news. Ashland was in a car accident. He didn’t survive. Summer, I am…

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Nick: …So sorry. This is going to be very hard on harrison.

Summer: I — I got to get home to kyle. Got to figure out how we’re going to deal with this. Thank you for letting me know. Mom, I’ll get back to you about your idea.

Nick: What idea?

Phyllis: Oh, it’s nothing. Um, you seem really broken up about this. I mean… I get the feeling there’s more to the story, and maybe you didn’t want to say it in front of summer.

Nick: Aw, it’s just, you know, sudden,

Phyllis: Uh-huh. Look on the bright side.

Nick: Phyllis, don’t say that.

Phyllis: Let’s be honest. There’s a bright side. You never have to deal with that guy ever, ever again. It’s finally over.

Victor: Why are you asking me what happened here tonight?

Nick: Dad, please just level with us, alright? If you know more about ashland’s disappearance than you’re saying, now is not the time to hold back.

Victor: Son, I just learned everything while chance was here. I don’t know what happened.

Victoria: I can’t believe that ashland is — is out there. There’s no telling what he’s gonna do next.

Nick: Well, one thing we do know, vick, is nothing is gonna happen to you.

Victor: We won’t let anything happen to you, alright?

Adam: What are you doing here?

Sally: I’m like one of those ghosts in that dickens novel. I’m giving you a second chance. A do-over, so this time you can make the right choice. And we can reclaim our future.

Victor: Well, I’m certain the cops will hunt him down, find him wherever he is.

Victoria: What if he comes back here?

Victor: Sweetheart, that’s why I suggested before that you come with me and with your mother and stay over at the ranch. You’ll be safe and protected.

Nick: I agree with dad, at least until ashland is found and we know you’re out of danger.

Victoria: Okay. I can have a bag packed in a few minutes. I don’t want to stay here tonight after what happened.

Nick: We should have somebody come over here and clean up this place after the police are done with their investigation. She shouldn’t have to come back to it with it looking like this.

Victor: Yep, I agree.

Nick: Ashland cannot be underestimated. Everything I said to chance was true. He wasn’t breathing. There was no pulse. Yet somehow he got out of here. I still don’t know how he did that.

Victoria: I do. I know how he did it. He’s so angry at me, he’s unstoppable.

Victor: Thank the lord he wasn’t killed here tonight. I mean, everyone would have thought it was a revenge killing, considering what a bad relationship locke had with our family.

Victoria: I just wanted him to leave.

Nick: I just was trying to protect my sister, you know? He was gonna kill her. Would you have done anything different?

Victor: No, not at all. Would have done the same thing. You know I would put my life on the line for any of you. Having said that, you may have put yourself in a tough legal position, you know?

Nick: Yeah, I know I could be facing some legal issues, but all that pales in comparison to me thinking I killed a guy, even someone as terrible as locke. That’s why I insisted we call chance. It’s the right thing to do. And I’ll face the consequences.

Victor: Nicholas, you’re a good person.

Victoria: You’re the best.

Victor: And whatever happens, don’t you worry about a damn thing. I’ll take care of it all, okay?

Chance: Now, I just want to spread everything out, alright? I need 2 miles in every direction.

Officer roberts: Is he armed?

Chance: That’s unknown, but go ahead and consider him dangerous. He’s also suffered a head injury, so I think we’re looking for a blood trail here.

Officer roberts: So he could be holed up somewhere.

Chance: Yeah, or he’s running from the law. That’s why we got to stay vigilant. Keep a sharp eye.

Michael: Oh, coffee, please. Chance.

Michael: Hey.

Michael: I heard. Victor brought me up to speed. Horrible business.

Chance: Looks like it’s gonna be a long night. We just stopped to refuel and work out a game plan.

Michael: Oh, so you’re saying there are no leads, no sightings of ashland? If you have any updates, I’d appreciate it if you could give me a heads up.

Michael: You know I’m victor’s attorney. I care a great deal about all the newmans. So of course I am invested in what happens to ashland.

Chance: My question was, are you here to report back to the big guy?

Michael: Well, obviously, victor is anxious for news. His daughter was attacked by ashland. Locke is still on the loose. I mean, I think victor is entitled to be kept abreast of whatever’s transpiring with the search for the man who tried to kill his daughter. Would you begrudge him that? News that might put his and his daughter’s mind at ease? Victoria is your wife’s sister. I would think, you know, family comes first.

Chance: Well, family or not, got to play this one by the book, mike. I’m not gonna let anything interfere with this investigation. Not even my father-in-law.

Michael: I respect that.

Chance: Now, I told the newmans that I would contact them once I locate locke. I intend to keep that promise.

Michael: Well, if you do get any information, I’ll be here for a while, so I could relay it myself should the need arise.

Chance: I will keep that in mind. Excuse me, michael.

Nick: Dad, why don’t you take vick home? I’ll lock up around here.

Victor: Thanks, old boy.

Victoria: I honestly don’t know what I would do without you.

Nick: I’m just glad nothing happened to you.

Nick: Be a good boy.

Victoria: You broke into my house. You threatened me. You grabbed me!

Ashland: No! Enough, alright? I —

Nick: You put your hands on her?!

Ashland: Ugh!

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Adam: [ Sighs ] Look. You should not be here.

Sally: Hell, yes, I should. This is exactly where I belong.

Adam: You completely ignored everything that I told you earlier, okay? I told you to stay away. And what did you do? What did you do? You broke into my room.

Sally: Our room, actually. That’s what I told the sweet lady at the front desk. You know, the one we always see when we ask for this room. Who always says what a cute couple we make. I just told her that you forgot to give me the key whenever you checked in and could she be a dear. So [Clicks tongue] Voil.

Adam: And how did you know where to find me?

Sally: Where else would you go but the place we’ve made so many memories? Where we felt safe and powerful and understood, because, like it or not, adam, I understand you.

Adam: Sally, you don’t have the slightest idea about who I really am. Okay? And you’re reading way too much into where I decided to sleep tonight.

Sally: You’re angry at your father for not giving you the ceo gig, so you left the ranch.

Adam: What is this? Is this where I’m supposed to be impressed by your insight into me, sally? Because I’m not. All you’re doing is you’re repeating things that I told you on why I’m walking away from everything.

Sally: You opened up to me because of our connection.

Adam: You know what that was? It was a calculated act of vulnerability on my part to get you to fall in love with me, like I knew it would.

Sally: Don’t try to pretend like this is some kind of game, like I’m another one of your conquests, because I know that’s not true, because I pursued you.

Adam: And what are you doing now? Are you going back into chase mode? Sally, you have to stop acting like this.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] You didn’t think I was just going to give up, did you? I thought we knew each other better than that.

Adam: No, I assumed that you had too much self-respect to keep throwing yourself at someone who just rejected you. So apparently, I don’t know you that well.

Sally: I’m here because i have a ton of self-confidence, enough to endure whatever it is that you’re gonna dish out until you finally drop your defenses.

Adam: Look, this is not me putting up a wall. I am being honest. That part of our lives is over. Okay? We’re moving on in opposite directions. You just — you have to let me go, okay? Whatever you think I’m feeling or wish that I was feeling, I am not. And whatever you think should happen between us, it won’T. You are wrong. There is no future between us. I do not want one. And I don’t know how to get that through your head once and for all.

Sally: You can protest as much as you want, but I know what exists between us. And I don’t want to lose what we have together. With golo, I’ve lost 13 inches in my waist.

Victoria: Oh, my god. What happened? Nick, what’s wrong?

Nick: I, um — I can’t feel a pulse.

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I’m sorry, daddy. I’m sorry for the detour. I just — I need to grab some files before a meeting that I have tomorrow.

Victor: Well, I normally would suggest you take a little rest after this, but I know that you tend to go to work when something like this happens. So do I.

Nikki: Well, what on earth are you two doing here?

Victor: What are you doing here, sweetheart?

Nikki: I’m finishing up some work on the chapman project.

Victor: Oh.

Nikki: Your turn.

Victoria: You read my mind. I’ll take those. Thank you.

Nikki: It’s well after business hours. Why are you here?

Victor: Well, we’re here because our daughter’s gonna pack her things and go out to the ranch with us. She’s gonna stay with us.

Victoria: I’m not sure for how long yet.

Nikki: Well, of course, you’re always welcome. But why? What’s going on?

Victoria: Ashland. He came by the house tonight. He was — he was out of control. He was just so angry, and he threatened me.

Nikki: My god. I was worried that something like this would happen. Are you alright?

Victor: I’m fine, thanks to nicholas. He’s my hero.

Nikki: And where is ashland? I hope that he is in police custody.

Victor: [ Sighs ] They’re looking for him. Everybody’s looking for him. Most important thing is that our children are safe.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Victoria: It’s nicholas. Hi, nick. Is everything okay?

Nick: Everything’s fine.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Good. Okay. Is there anything that you need?

Nick: I just had a question for you. I found this signet ring on the floor near the french doors. It’s got like a — like a crest on it. I was just wondering if it was ashland’S.

Victoria: Yes, I gave it to him for valentine’s day. It bears the loch family crest. He brought it with him tonight, and he was waving it around, ranting about how it used to symbolize our future, but now it just represents my deceit.

Nick: Did he throw it or something?

Victoria: No, no. I remember, he put it back in his shirt pocket. He said he wanted to hold on to it to remind him how cruel the world is.

Nikki: Yeah, as if he was the victim in all of this.

Nick: How’d it get on the floor?

Victoria: All I know is i never want to see that thing again.

Nick: Yeah, understood. I’ll take care of it. Stay safe.

Victoria: You too. No matter what type of dog you have…

Adam: I — I didn’t mean to hurt you.

Sally: Is this your attempt to apologize? Because I’d categorize it as a fail.

Adam: Sally, you’re — you’re disillusioned, okay? You’re confused.

Sally: No, no, no. Please, please keep explaining my emotions to me.

Adam: I am not doing that, okay? You are the one who is conflating our personal relationship with our work relationship. In your mind, you think being with me and being the leader of newman media are intertwined, but they don’t have to be. They’re not, okay? You don’t need love to succeed.

Sally: Yeah. Damn straight. But i want love in my life. And I’m not confused about the way that I’m feeling. I know exactly why I want to be with you above anything else.

Adam: Sally, look, there’s just — there’s no point in belaboring this.

Sally: You know what? You’re not an expert on me. But follow along because maybe you will learn a thing or two. As you’re aware, my parents vanished from my life when I was very young, and my sister and me had to fend for ourselves. And not only that, they left a big black hole where my heart had been. And thank god that I had my sister and my brilliant grandmother to take care of us. Those two were my everything. And every single time I reached high and I fell hard trying to build my career or searching for someone to spend my life with, those two were there every time everything came crashing down. Those were my constants. But something was always missing in my heart.

Adam: Well, I’m glad that you have them in your life. Maybe you should call them now.

Sally: Please, don’t you dare give me advice because I know what’s best for me. So many times I thought to myself, “great, I found the perfect job or the man of my dreams,” only to have my heart broken and my hopes dashed again and again. But I never let it break my spirit. Because I always knew that there was the right person out there for me somewhere. And then… I met you. And for the first time in my life, that black hole… completely vanished. It was like I had known you my entire life, in every possible universe, and we had finally found our way to each other again. This is our time. This is the right place to be. And all the stars are aligned. I am not your enemy. I am not your impediment. I have never stood between you and your family or you and anything that you wanted, because I want those same things and we can have those things together. So just admit it — that you still love me and that I am good for you. Can you please stop resisting it and start working with me so we can start finding our way through this? Find our way back to each other again.

Victoria: It just all happened so fast.

Nikki: Darling, just take your time.

Victoria: I told ashland that he was a twisted, unlovable monster. And he grabbed me, so I found something to defend myself with [Sighs] And then I ran. He ran after me. And then nick was there.

Nikki: Oh, thank goodness.

Victoria: He got between us and he stopped ashland. And then nick tried to get him to leave, but he refused to leave. So I ran into the kitchen to — to grab my phone so that I could call the police. And I thought I heard ashland say that he was going to finish what he had come there to do. And when I came back into the room, he was — he was on the floor. Ashland was laying on the floor, and nick was checking for a pulse. Mom, we thought ashland was dead. He fell. He hit his head near the fireplace, but there was no pulse and we tried to resuscitate him. So we went outside to get some air and to just try to — try to understand what just happened. But when we came back, he was gone.

Nikki: Wait, gone?

Victoria: No, not dead gone. Like “not there anymore” gone. How is that even possible?

Nikki: I don’t know.

Victoria: When ashland came after me, I — I just swore that I was gonna do whatever it took to fight him off. And if nicholas hadn’t have come, I don’t know what I would have done. I mean, I could have killed him.

Nikki: But you didn’T. And neither did your brother. Thank god. That is the last thing you want to have on your conscience. This way, you have nothing to apologize for, nothing to regret.

Victor: Sweetheart, your mother’s right, okay? Most important thing is that you’re safe and that everyone in the family is safe right now.

Victoria: Thank you.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Victor: Excuse me. Okay, I’m gonna take this outside, okay?

Nikki: Is it the police?

Victor: No. I’ll explain later.

Nikki: Baby.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Victor: You’re keeping your eyes on chance?

Michael: Yeah. He’s still here in the coffee house, talking with another officer. I thought I’d have something more worthwhile to report by now, but…

Victor: And no one has located ashland locke?

Michael: Not yet. What you want me to do?

Victor: Nothing. You don’t have to hang around there.

Michael: Alright, I’ll keep you informed.

Nick: I’m assuming that was my father.

Michael: Well, you’d be correct. He filled me in on everything that happened tonight.

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry. It must have been quite an ordeal for you.

Nick: Thanks. Any updates?

Michael: Yeah, chance is not in a sharing mood. Beyond that, I don’t think there’s — there’s been any news.

Nick: Actually, I have a few words for chance myself.

Michael: Hold on, hold on. Before you do that, there’s something I need to know.

Adam: That was beautiful, sally, really. Okay? But nothing has changed. I just — I don’t feel the same way as you do.

Sally: Do you remember when we first started working together? Any time we were within five feet of each other, we were in dangerous territory. We wanted each other so badly, but we knew if we got too close that we would just burn up in each other’s atmosphere. You had never met a woman like me. You had been looking for me your whole entire life. And you couldn’t walk away from me.

Adam: Well, that was then. Okay? Life moves on, and so do I.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Okay, okay. Yeah, you can just keep pretending like you don’t love me for whatever misguided reasons that are flowing through your head or maybe you’ve actually convinced yourself that it’s true. But I know what’s real. And I know you, adam. And I know eventually you will come around and you will realize… that this is a massive mistake. And the tragic thing is you probably won’t even realize what a catastrophic screw-up it is until it is way too late and I have moved on the way that you’re proclaiming that you want me to. So I suggest that you think long and hard about what it is that you will be losing if you let me slip away… just to prove whatever point it is that you are trying to make.

Michael: How are you holding up?

Nick: I’m alright.

Michael: Really? Because after what you’ve been through, I imagine — how would I put this — that you’re experiencing a lot of conflicting emotions.

Nick: Truthfully, I’m walking a fine line here. Do I wish ashland would vanish from the face of the earth, never to be heard from again? Absolutely. But when I think about possibly having a hand in the taking of another man’s life…

Michael: That’s because —

Nick: Is he hurt? Is he suffering?

Michael: You’re a good man. That’s because you’re a good man. You cannot blame yourself for anything you did in that moment. You had every right to protect your sister and yourself.

Nick: I just want him found.

Michael: He will be. With all those people looking for him, he can’t hide for long. Justice will be served. Just… try to get some rest.

[ Speaks indistinctly ]

Nick: Thanks.

Michael: Nick, nick… take care of yourself.

Nick: Alright.

Chance: Alright, let me know if anything changes.

Nick: Hey.

Nick: Yeah, I just wanted to thank you again for your help tonight.

Chance: Happy to help.

Nick: Well, I think I can help you even more.

Nick: I found this.

Nikki: I’m so glad you’re gonna be staying with us. Can only imagine what it was like to be attacked in your home again.

Victoria: You know, mom, when ashland came at me, it triggered this heavy rush of memories about — about J.T.

Nikki: Must’ve been awful reliving that trauma.

Victoria: The thing is, there was a medical reason for J.T.’S behavior. I mean, that brain tumor, that’s what caused him to be violent. It had nothing to do with me. But with ashland, I brought him and his chaos and his poison into our lives.

Nikki: Darling, you fell in love with the wrong person. I and the rest of this family have made that same mistake before.

Victoria: But I-I keep making that mistake again and again, falling for flawed, damaged men that I just delude myself into thinking that I can fix, like some struggling company that I can buy and make profitable again.

Nikki: Honey. You want to see the best in the people that you love. That’s not a bad thing.

Victoria: Mom, thank you so much. I appreciate you trying to comfort me, but we both know that I have a blind spot when it comes to relationships. When I got involved with ashland, you all tried to warn me, but I didn’t listen to you.

Nikki: That doesn’t mean you’re responsible for what happened tonight.

Victoria: How can you say that? I forced you to accept him. I made excuses for his lies, and he did exactly what nick and everyone else said he would do. And I just don’t know how I’m supposed to forgive myself.

[ Sighs ] At metro by t-mobile… you can save more.

Nikki: Darling, you have to help me understand why you feel even a hint of guilt over what happened.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Mom, I’m not saying that I’m solely responsible. I’m disgusted by what ashland did. And he lied, and — and he used me and the rest of the family to get what he wanted, and it’s completely unforgivable. You have no idea how good it felt to turn the tables on him and to — to make him pay.

Nikki: It must have been an amazing feeling.

Victoria: It was. I took everything that he had.

[ Sighs ] And that was the plan. But maybe I took too much.

Nikki: What do you mean?

Victoria: Do you remember what I told you about how defeated he looked when I left him in new york?

Nikki: Yes.

Victoria: Well, I think maybe something shattered in him. Because after what I witnessed tonight, it was — it was kind of like the final destruction of his psyche. I mean, I wanted to punish him. I wanted to hurt him the same way that he hurt me. And I wanted to exact some modicum of revenge. And I think —

Nikki: Darling, darling, i can’t let you keep going on like this. If bobby defranco — and yes, we are going to call the monster by his real name — if bobby defranco doesn’t realize that every predator is someone’s prey, well, then he’s learned a valuable lesson. Nobody messes with the newmans. He lost. His feelings got hurt. That’s on him.

Victoria: I hadn’t thought of it like that.

Nikki: And I completely understand why you’re feeling vulnerable right now. That is normal, especially for someone like you. You’re a very caring, forgiving person. And this was a man you once loved and wanted to spend the rest of your life with. But he was never the man he wanted you to believe he was. So I don’t want you to waste one more ounce of grief over him. Don’t give him that power. He never deserved you, and he certainly doesn’t deserve your sympathy. So whatever his fate may be, I’m not gonna shed any tears over him and neither should you.

Victor: I couldn’t agree more, sweetheart.

Chance: What do you know about this ring?

Nick: It was a valentine’s gift from victoria to locke. He said it was a symbol of her betrayal and he shoved it in her face and then stuffed it in his shirt pocket. But I found it on the ground. I don’t know. It may not mean anything.

Chance: Okay. So, what, it fell out of his pocket or something?

Nick: Maybe he took it out to look at it. I don’t know. Vick said that he didn’t throw it.

Chance: Well, regardless, I appreciate you bringing this to me. Thank you.

Nick: Yeah. How’s the search going? Michael said you guys still haven’t found locke.

Chance: Nope. That’s odd, right? Especially considering the fact he’s been injured. But, you know, we’re looking for a blood trail leading from the house, searching for his vehicle as well. We’ll find him. Nick, is there anything else you want to get off your chest?

Adam: Look, believe me, I have thought this through. What’s done is done. There’s really nothing more i can say.

Sally: Alright.

Adam: That’s it?

Sally: Yeah, you heard me out, as promised. So I wish you a good night.

Adam: So we’re done here, just like that?

Sally: Yeah. Except for this. I will be resigning from newman media first thing in the morning.

Adam: Okay, look, you cannot do that. You love that job.

Sally: I don’t want it anymore because becoming ceo might have cost me my happiness. A jelly bean that’s good for you?

Nick: No, I’ve got nothing to add. It’s just been a long night, you know?

[ Cellphone rings ]

Chance: Give me a sec. Yeah? Yeah, I’ll be right there. I got to run, man.

Nick: Is that about ashland?

Chance: You can’t get involved, nick, I’m sorry.

Nick: Come on. This has been so hard on victoria. Just give me something I can tell her that’ll help her go to sleep tonight.

Chance: We don’t have a positive id yet, but my officers did find a car at the bottom of a ravine.

Nick: Was it ashland’s? Look, I can go with you. I can help you id —

Chance: Nick, nick, nick, you’re not getting involved. Okay? I will let you know any pertinent details when the time is right. Until then, stay out of it.

Adam: Yes. I need to book a flight out of genoa city first thing in the morning. Las vegas.

Sally: World falling apart and wishing you could get a do-over?

Nick: How could you tell?

Sally: You look like hell. And I hear misery loves company, so…can I buy you a coffee?

Nikki: Let’s get you home so you can rest. You must be exhausted.

Victoria: I actually do feel like I might be able to sleep for a couple of hours. Thank you, daddy, for everything.

Victor: You know that I will always protect you. Nothing means more to me than to know that all of you are safe.

Nikki: Are you coming home with us?

Victor: One second. I need to deal with something right now, okay? Come in, michael.

Michael: I was just about to ask if I might be of any assistance. You okay, nikki?

Nick: I searched everywhere. Ashland didn’t just stumble off into some other room. There’s no trail of blood for us to see where he went.

Victoria: This just makes no sense.

Nick: I saw him fall and hit his head. I checked him. He wasn’t breathing.

Victoria: We both checked his pulse. I mean, I tried to revive him. How is it possible that we’re wrong?

Nick: I think we have to assume that ashland’s alive and that he made it outside and that he got away somehow.

Summer: [ Sighs ] Thanks for suggesting coming here. Part of me just wanted to stay at home and watch harrison sleep after the bullet we dodged with ashland today.

Kyle: Me too. But he’s safe and sound, thanks in part to my mom.

Summer: She showed up for us big time.

Kyle: Mm. And I wanted us to have a little alone time so I can thank you for being such a great stepmom and wife.

Summer: And now business partner.

Kyle: Oh! How could I forget? I think we should toast to that.

Summer: I think so, too. Well, well, well, would you look at that? My brother and your…

Kyle: Niece.

Summer: Right. Would you mind if we went over there? I know that it’s our date night, but I haven’t caught up with noah in forever.

Kyle: I think you just want to spy on the new romance.

Summer: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Kyle: Don’t get me wrong, I’m on board. I haven’t had a chance to talk to allie, which is kind of embarrassing because we live in the same house, so let’s do it.

Summer: Okay.

Kyle: Hey, guys. Looks like you had the same idea on how to spend your evening.

Noah: Hey, how’s it going?

Allie: Look at you two out and about.

Summer: Seems like you’re settling into your newly adopted city.

Allie: Yeah, well, I have a pretty great tour guide.

Sharon: You look like you are mulling something over. Can I get you something to drink while you’re doing that?

Adam: Sure. Thank you. How — how you doing?

Sharon: Oh, I’m hanging in there. You know, some days are better than others, but I think I’m doing as well as can be expected. How are you?

Adam: I’m okay, you know? Connor is away at camp, and I have decided to move off the ranch for the time being. I’m taking up a room at the grand phoenix.

Sharon: Oh, yeah, I heard about the personnel changes at newman enterprises. Might that be the reason for your move?

Adam: Personnel change? You mean victoria’s return, nick’s rise, and my fall?

Sharon: You know, I have to admit, I was a little surprised that nick decided to go back to the company, but I knew he spent a lot of time thinking it through before he agreed.

Adam: Really? I always thought he was the “go on instinct” kind of guy.

Sharon: Well, to be fair, you both act on reflexes sometimes. Nick told me that you turned down the ceo position at newman media. Might that have been an impetuous decision?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] That was well played. I walked right into that one. But, no, my decision was a calculated, yet defiant declaration of independence from my father.

Sharon: I see. So once you cool down, maybe you’ll change your mind.

Adam: It’s like I’m saying the words, but you’re not hearing them.

Sharon: [ Laughs ] Sorry. It just does seem like a little bit of a knee-jerk reaction, but only because I know how much building newman media into a successful company meant to you.

Adam: Yes, I did build it up, and my family rewarded me by using me and kicking me back to the curb again once victoria, the anointed, reappeared. I have tried for the last time to be a part of the inner circle, but they will not allow it and I don’t want it. I have finally cut ties with victor.

Nick: There’s no sign of him back there.

Victoria: He must’ve —

[ Sighs ] I don’t know, he got up and left. There’s no other explanation.

Nick: He had no pulse.

Victoria: Maybe we were wrong about that. Maybe there was a pulse, but it was just too faint, so we didn’t detect it. But obviously, ashland is alive because he walked away. That’s — there’s no other explanation, nick. I mean, the good news is you didn’t kill him.

Noah: I like that, too. And I totally get why you’re busy with work and family, especially diane.

Kyle: Ah, you’re not one for small talk.

Allie: I just figured we have spent so much of our lives not knowing that each other existed, that why not just cut straight to the meaty part, right? Unless I offended you in any way.

Kyle: No, not at all. I appreciate the directness. It’s a nice change of pace. So, are you one of the people who is angry with my mother?

Allie: I am team undecided. Look, she used me to get to jack, and that was upsetting. But then she has also just been nice to me ever since. I will say this, though. She does have a lot of enemies in town.

Kyle: She has done more than a few questionable things.

Allie: And there are people who are willing to try to forgive her, and there are others who want.

Kyle: That’s right.

Allie: You know, there is a lot of curiosity about where my sympathies lie.

Kyle: Really?

Allie: Oh, yeah.

Kyle: Sorry you got caught up in that.

Allie: It’s fine. I’m not too worried about it. I’m pretty good at steering myself away from trouble, and I’m pretty motivated to do that these days. For the first time in a long time, my future’s looking pretty bright.

Kyle: Noah have something to do with that?

Allie: Perhaps. Hey, I do have one other question for you.

Kyle: Shoot.

Allie: Is being and abbott as perfect as it appears to be?

Victoria: Dad, how did you know to come here?

Victor: I had a security detail following you ever since I learned that ashland locke was back in town.

Victoria: Yeah, I know. I’ve seen them.

Victor: They were discreetly stationed in a car outside the house tonight.

Nick: Did they see ashland? Is he alive?

Chance: Hey. Got here as soon as I could.

Victor: Chance.

Chance: What happened with ashland? Is everyone okay?

Sharon: I didn’t mean to doubt your intentions. What I meant was I’ve seen you go down this road before a few times, and you never get very far.

Adam: Well, I assure you that this time is different.

Sharon: Hey, if this really is you making a clean break from victor, I applaud it.

Adam: And yet you support nick rejoining the family fold?

Sharon: Well, you and nick are very different.

Adam: Ah. [ Chuckles ] I’m gonna take that as a compliment. Look, I know that you have always thought that I needed to define myself in a way that is separate from my father.

Sharon: Yes, that’s because the tortured dynamic between the two of you is responsible for your worst tendencies and actions. I mean, you’re either trying to prove something to him or you’re punishing him for some perceived wrongdoing.

Adam: Yeah, you’re right. That’s why the only way for me to truly be free is to make a clean break, because trying to prove myself under the newman umbrella, under victor’s control, is impossible. As much as he says he’s gonna give me a autonomy, it just isn’t true. He just wants to be able to take back the reins whenever it suits him.

Sharon: I get that. And I agree. But this last go-round at newman media, I mean, the last few months, I have seen some glimpses of the good man that I know you to be at your core. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but… maybe sally had some influence on you and maybe she helped get you there? Hi, I’m denise.

Victoria: Ashland showed up at the house earlier uninvited.

Chance: I heard that you two had split. I don’t know much of the specific details, but we don’t have to get into that right now. Why don’t you just walk me through what happened here tonight?

Victoria: I recently made it clear to ashland that — that I wanted nothing more to do with him going forward. And obviously, ashland had a hard time accepting that. He showed up at the house, the back door, wanting to talk. I let him come in so he could say his piece. And he started rambling. He said some — some pretty awful things to me.

[ Sighs ] And when I insisted that there was no future for the two of us, he — he just grew more agitated.

Chance: Take a minute if you need to.

Victoria: No, I’m fine. At one point, he grabbed me, and that’s when I knew that he was gonna hurt me.

Chance: Did he hurt you?

Victoria: No, I was able to get away from him, and that’s when nicholas showed up. Thank god. Because I knew at that point — I knew that ashland was gonna kill me.

Adam: Well, you might as well hear this from me since it’ll be public knowledge soon enough. But sally and i have ended our relationship.

Sharon: Oh, wow. Well, I’m sorry to hear that.

Adam: You are? I mean, I didn’t peg you as a member of the sally spectra fan club.

Sharon: Well, I definitely wasn’t, and she and i certainly are not friends. But, you know, she seemed to care about you. I mean, she supported you extricating yourself from your complicated family dynamic. And I don’t know, she seemed to get you and vice versa.

Adam: But you just said you didn’t know that well, so what makes you think that?

Sharon: Actually, sally came to see me a while ago to talk to me about you.

Adam: I’m — I’m sorry, sharon. She should not have done that.

Sharon: Yeah, I was pretty suspicious at first, but ultimately, I became convinced that she did it because she cares about you.

Adam: Well, the truth is that sally and i were holding each other back.

Adam: How was she holding you back?

Adam: She wasn’t exactly a popular choice with certain people.

Sharon: Well, you know, you can be an acquired taste yourself sometimes.

Adam: Hmm. Point taken. But it just — it just got too complicated.

Adam: Okay, well, you said that you don’t care about what victor thinks or nick or victoria, so it can’t be that.

Adam: There were a lot of other factors, and I just — I really don’t want to get into the details.

Sharon: Hey, it’s me you’re talking to — the person that you can be honest with, and I can be honest with you. You know, you were the first person I was able to reveal the full extent of my grief to when rey died. I really am grateful for that, and I’d like to return the favor.

Adam: Maybe I wanted to let her fly without me holding her back. I was setting her free so she could soar, okay? You, of all people, should know that I can be a debilitating weight, you know? Albatross around the neck of anyone who cares about me.

Sharon: [ Chuckles ] Okay. I’m sure you hurt her, but I don’t believe all that. Come on.

Sally: You were lying to me. I knew it. I could sense it in my soul. You think you’re doing me a favor, but it is a favor that I don’t want. All I want is to be with you. I mean, you’re barely older than okay, being an abbott definitely has its upsides,

Kyle: [ Laughs ] Okay, being an abbott definitely has its upsides, but it can still be a roller coaster, and you’ll figure that out if you stick around, which I hope you will.

Allie: Yeah, it’s looking more and more likely.

Kyle: I’m sorry I never got to know your dad, my brother.

Allie: Yeah, the fact that he is your brother, it’s weird. I mean, you’re barely older than I am.

Kyle: Learning you had a whole new family that you never knew existed, it must have been bizarre for you.

Allie: Yeah. Yeah. And I really wasn’t sure if I’d have a relationship with any of you, but from the very first moment I met jack, he has been nothing but wonderful. And then there’s traci, abby, billy — they’ve all been so warm and so welcoming.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ]

Allie: But I knew ashley was skeptical of me at first.

[ Chuckles ] But I feel like she has really come to trust and accept me as part of the family.

Kyle: Yeah, she can be tough and protective.

Allie: Oh, yeah.

Kyle: Just like most of the women in the family. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Allie: I agree, and I feel very lucky to be included in that group. Hey, I’m also thrilled to be joining jabot.

Kyle: Mm-hmm.

Allie: I’m sorry we’re just missing each other there.

Kyle: Well, I’m not going anywhere exactly. I’ll just be overseeing a new division, so I’ll still be there.

Allie: That’s true.

Kyle: I’m glad you found your place.

Allie: Yeah. Yeah, I am, too.

Noah: Why don’t you sit down? I want to talk to you about something.

Summer: Okay. What’s going on? You’re making me nervous.

Noah: I am leaving new hope.

Summer: What? Why? Wait, does this mean that you’re leaving genoa city? Like, seriously, as soon as i get back.

Noah: No, I’m not leaving town. I’m just leaving new hope.

Summer: Okay, phew. I got to be honest, I’m kind of not that surprised. I mean, this has always sort of felt like a stopgap for you. I’m sure dad’s gonna be disappointed, though.

Noah: I thought the same. I didn’t think he’d take it well, but we talked earlier, and he was surprisingly accepting. I know he wanted me to fill in over at new hope now that he’s back at newman, but he understood it just wasn’t the right fit for me.

Summer: Dad’s pretty good about putting his kids’ happiness first.

Noah: Yeah, we got lucky that way.

Summer: We did. You know, when I went over to milan, he flew over with me. He helped me get all settled in, even though I knew he did not want me to leave genoa city.

Noah: This might be a little too analytical, but, you know, maybe dad’s always been a little bit more hands-off because grandpa had such a heavy hand in his kids lives.

Summer: Yeah. Dad wants something different for us.

Chance: Okay. Do you think you can continue?

Nick: Maybe I’ll take the next bit. When I got here, ashland was in a total rage, acting like a crazy person. He was screaming at me to stay out of it, to just mind my own business, but obviously I wasn’t gonna leave my sister here alone with him, so I told her to go and call the police.

Victoria: That’s when I ran into the kitchen.

Nick: And he tried to go after her. Then I stopped him, you know, and it got physical. We were pushing each other and…

[ Sighs ] I socked him in the jaw, and then he fell down. He hit his head on the fireplace. I was yelling at him to get up, and he wouldn’t answer me, so I knelt down to check on him to find a pulse, and I couldn’t find one.

Victoria: That’s when I came back in from the other room and I saw him lying on the ground unconscious and he was bleeding. I checked his pulse too, and, um, I even tried to resuscitate him.

Nick: It all happened so fast, you know? All I wanted to do was protect my sister. But I’m telling you, ashland was completely out of control. But the idea that I may have taken someone’s life, even as someone as terrible as ashland, you know, it was really messing with me. So I needed to go outside and get some air, so I took off out the front, and victoria followed me, you know, just to make sure I was okay.

Victor: So obviously my son acted out of self-defense. Trying to protect his sister from this monster.

Chance: Well, based off everyone’s interpretations, I agree with you. I’m very sorry that this happened. I’m glad nick was here to intervene. But I do have a question. Where’s ashland now?

Victoria: Uh…well, the thing is…

Nick: We have no idea. After I was able to calm down and get my head right, we came back inside. He was gone. Ashland was just gone.

Sharon: I think I’m gonna leave you two alone to discuss things.

Adam: Yeah, I should probably go.

Sally: No, don’t even try. Okay. You can stop lying now. I just heard everything that you said to sharon. And I really don’t know whether to be furious with you or to wrap my arms around you and tell you that I love you because now I know that you still love me, too.

Adam: What are you talking about? I didn’t say anything about loving you.

Sally: Okay, you know, I’m not gonna let you get away with that. I just heard it with my own ears. You said that you were setting me free to let me soar. I don’t know why you have this idea in your head that you’re making some grand gesture so that I can keep my job, but it’s crazy.

Adam: No, I think you misunderstood what I was saying.

Sally: No, I did not. You keep telling me that you broke up with me so you could look better in victor’s eyes. That’s a lie. It’s a lie. You don’t care what victor thinks. I just heard you telling sharon as much.

Adam: Well, that’s because I was lying to sharon. I wasn’t lying to you.

Sally: Why would you do that? Why wouldn’t you tell her the same thing that you told me if it’s the truth?

Adam: Because I care about sharon’s opinion, and I didn’t want her thinking that I still had issues with my father, so it was easier and it was cleaner to make her think that my actions were noble.

Sally: Still not buying it.

Adam: Look, sharon has intimate knowledge of my history, and I know that she was gonna tell me that I shouldn’t be affected by his influence. So it was easier to have a preemptive lie to avoid her judgment. Okay? You starting to get it now? I don’t know how much clearer I can be.

Sally: It just seems like you’re scrambling to come up with an explanation.

Adam: Yeah, because you keep following me around, listening in to all the conversations that I’m having, sally.

Sally: I’m not following you.

Adam: No, I think you are. And actually, it’s making you seem pathetic and it’s making you seem desperate.

Sally: Can you really say that you don’t miss that? That you don’t miss us? I don’t care what your brother or your sister think of me and I don’t give a damn about victor’s opinions, so you can spin whatever story it is that you want about our breakup to me, to your family, or to sharon, and you can even lie to yourself, but that kiss — that was the truth. You love me as much as I love you. Why can’t you get that through you thick skull? I don’t care if I continue to work at newman media. It is just a job. What you and I have is so much more.

Adam: Stop it. Okay, just stop it. You’re making a fool out of yourself, okay? You can believe it or you can not believe it, sally, but we are done. You have no choice but to move on.

Chance: It’s a pretty sharp edge. If he hit this hard enough to draw that much blood, I’m sure he concussed himself.

Nick: That fall knocked him out. That’s why vick and I thought that he was dead.

Chance: Yeah, well, sometimes a pulse can be tough to find. I mean, the guy must have been alive. Bodies just don’t disappear like this. Still, if he was able to stumble out of here, especially after being knocked unconscious like that, he had to be weak and disoriented. You know, he’s a tough guy from making out of the house at all. Victoria, I got in the car and left right after you called me. So would you say that was about 15 minutes after all this?

Victor: What are you suggesting?

Summer: You definitely get the credit for putting a smile back on my brother’s face and for giving him a good reason to stay in town. Don’t tell anyone, but I kind of like having you around.

Noah: Yeah, I feel the same way, but if any of you say anything, I’ll deny it.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ]

Allie: I’m not the only reason that noah’s sticking around. Tell them, it’s exciting.

Noah: I have this new idea. I want to take the entire glam vibe from mariah and tessa’s wedding and open up a new nightclub. Heavy on the art, kind of a lounge-y vibe.

Summer: That sounds cool.

Kyle: Yeah. Genoa city could really use a place like that. When are you planning on getting it off the ground?

Noah: Well, I’m putting together a pitch for grandpa right now because I kind of want to transform the top of the tower.

Summer: I don’t mean to be a downer, but I think you might have just hit your first roadblock. We hit the bike trails every weekend

Noah: What, you got a problem with my plan already?

Summer: Yeah. A grandpa-shaped problem. I mean, he kind of likes having the top of the tower in the newman building. He uses it a lot. He uses it as sort of like a second office. I’m not sure he’s gonna go for turning it into a nightclub with a glam vibe.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] I don’t think victor knows what glam vibe is.

Noah: I beg to differ, my friend. Have you seen pictures of him in the ’70s? Dude was a stud.

Kyle: I have.

Summer: True.

Kyle: And I stand corrected. But he was less of a bowie and more of a burt reynolds.

Noah: Yeah.

Allie: Who’s burt reynolds?

Noah: Are you ser– okay. We have a movie marathon in our future.

[ Chuckles ]

Allie: Okay, well, I’ve only met your grandfather once, so I’m not an expert here, but from what I hear, he’s a really great businessman and great businessmen can see a great idea. Didn’t you guys have a ton of fun at the wedding?

Summer: Well, yeah, I mean, we had a great time, but unfortunately, grandpa wasn’t there to witness it. I just think you might have a hard time convincing him of this one. I hope I’m wrong, though, but… you know what? I think I might have another idea for you.

Noah: Oh, yeah, what’s that?

Summer: My mom’s hotel. There’s this amazing space on the top floor that would be kind of perfect for what you’re going for.

Noah: Huh. Yeah, I hadn’t really thought about the grand phoenix. I mean, it’s already an upscale destination.

Kyle: Actually might be a better fit for the vibe you’re going for.

Summer: Ooh, ooh, if you could get it ready in time, maybe we could host marchetti’s winter fashion show there.

Noah: Okay, thank you for the idea, but let me think on it for a little bit, okay? I know, and I’m kind of dead set on transforming the top of the tower already, but if it doesn’t work with grandpa, I promise I’ll keep you in mind.

Summer: Okay. Sounds good. But let’s raise a toast. To new possibilities.

Allie: Hear, hear.

Noah: Hear, hear.

Sally: Thank you.

Sharon: Are you okay?

Sally: No, I’M…not.

Sharon: Do you want to talk about it?

Sally: Yeah. Yeah, I think I do. I always pride myself on knowing what’s what, on being able to read people. That’s like my thing. But, I mean, adam’s latest moves have my head spinning, and I just don’t know what to believe.

Sharon: Do you mind if I ask what happened between the two of you?

Sally: He claimed that he lost everything because of me, that being with me tainted his image in his father’s eyes. But then I just heard him telling you the exact opposite thing, which is exactly what I assumed all along, that he just broke up with me out of some favor to me and my career. But then when I confronted him about it, he told me that he was lying to you so you didn’t think badly of him. And now I just — my head is spinning and I have whiplash.

Sharon: Well, sometimes adam, he can be hard to understand.

Sally: The last time I came to you for insight on adam’s relationship with victor, you were really helpful. So can I ask you this? Am I fooling myself? Because honestly, I thought I knew adam, but now I just don’t know.

Sharon: I don’t know for sure what’s going on with adam, but as far as the differing stories, I agree that’s confusing, but I’m guessing the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Sally: How so?

Sharon: Well, he just got through telling me that he’s done with his father forever, which I find very hard to believe. But I can accept that he might feel that he needs to step away. And that will give you a chance to prove yourself at newman media without your relationship with him tainting people’s perception of you.

Sally: Well, I mean, if that’s the truth — and I want to believe that it is — shouldn’t that be my call? My battle to fight? Because despite what people think, adam has never influenced things for me. He always let me prove myself in my own way. So why is he suddenly doubting my ability to do that?

Sharon: I can’t speak to that. But I do know that it is a newman trait to think you’re doing right by protecting people even when they haven’t asked for protection. Much like what happened with victoria. Everyone moved in to save her from ashland.

Sally: Well, if adam is wounding me in some misguided attempt to help me, then I think I can forgive him. But I just don’t know how to get through to him so we can find our way past it. How can I stop him from being so damn noble and just go back to loving me again?

Chance: I’m here to help. And the best way that I can do that is to know precisely what happened here. Now, I’m asking questions based off what I’m seeing. Just trying to make sense of everything.

Victor: Now I’m taking orders in myself now. If you don’t mind my saying so, seemingly ashland still had a pulse because he walked out of here on his own.

Nick: And went where? I’m telling you, the condition he was in, he couldn’t have gotten far.

Chance: How about his car? Did you see it when you got here? No, it’s part of the reason why I was so surprised to find him here.

Victoria: He came in the back door, so maybe he’s parked out back or on a side street.

Chance: Okay, well, I’ll get some officers to search the area, keep an eye out for him on foot and for his vehicle.

Victoria: Thank you.

Chance: Again, victoria, I’m really sorry that this happened. I hadn’t realized things had deteriorated with him so much.

Victoria: I’m just grateful for your help now.

Nick: So what do we do next? I mean, should we tell summer and kyle that ashland’s around. He could go after harrison?

Victor: No, son, I think that’s not a good idea. I don’t think we should alarm them unnecessarily, you know? Besides that, harrison’s probably asleep at the abbotts’, and talking about that, why don’t you send a squad car over to that neighborhood and have them check it out, okay?

Chance: I can do that, but I wouldn’t worry. I doubt he makes it that far. If he’s smart, the first place he’s going is the hospital. I will find ashland. And when I do, would you like to press charges?

Sharon: I really wish there were an easy answer, but unfortunately, when it comes to adam, there often is not.

Sally: Yeah, learning that the hard way. But I still can’t help loving him.

Sharon: I think there is truth to the notion that your success at newman media was precarious at best as long as you were involved with him. You must know by now that victoria does not like or trust him.

Sally: You think? She doesn’t exactly hide her feelings.

Sharon: Well, it’s been that way for a long time, unfortunately.

Sally: Yeah, definitely picked up on some vibes by association from her.

Sharon: And now that he is back at the newman family business, nick will be part of the equation too. And there was a time when their relationship had cooled down, when adam had donated a kidney to my daughter faith, but they still have a complicated and tempestuous history. I think that nick wavers between tolerance and outright hatred for his brother.

Sally: I know that adam is a flawed and complicated guy. I just don’t understand why the family dynamics have to figure in so heavily into our relationship. I mean, why does victor and nikki and victoria and nick always have to be so intimately involved in every single thing?

Sharon: Because they’re newmans. They come as a package deal. I think maybe the important question here is how much do you value your job at newman media?

Sally: I have told adam over and over that it is not remotely as important to me as he is.

Sharon: Well, if that’s the case, you’ll just have to find a way to prove that to him.

Sally: Can you really say that you don’t miss that? That you don’t miss us?

Chance: Okay. I think I’m done here. I’m gonna get as many eyes as I can on the roads as soon as possible, start looking for this guy.

Victor: Alright.

Victoria: What do you mean, there’s only one way to end this?

Ashland: Oh, I don’t know. What does it sound like to you?

Victoria: It sounds like you’re crazy, ashland.

Ashland: Well, but does it sound like the truth? Because that’s what it is, victoria. It’s how I honestly feel! Do you understand that? There is only one way for this to end!

[ Wind whipping ]

Victoria: I hear my phone ringing. It’s in the kitchen, and i need to answer it.

Ashland: Whoever’s calling, they’re gonna have to leave a message.

Victoria: It’s my security detail. Yeah, they check in with me every 15 minutes, and if I don’t answer it, they’re gonna be here in a hurry.

Ashland: Well, then… we’re gonna have to make this quick.

Nikki: So, adam thinks that ashland is out for blood. And you believe him? I see. Well, what does that mean, victor? Well, I’ll keep my eyes open, but I’m more worried about victoria. Please make sure she’s safe. Yes. I know. You have everything under control. I’ll see you soon.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Phyllis: Hey. Are you ready for our meeting? Oh, my gosh. Please, please tell me your investigators came up with something on diane. This is really urgent. Every single day she’s here, she sticks her talons in even deeper.

[ Wind whipping ]

Jack: Hey, get in here quick, quick.

Diane: Oh, gosh! That wind came out of nowhere.

Jack: Yeah, that’s what we used to call a wicked wind when I was a kid.

Diane: I’ve never heard that phrase before.

Jack: No?

Diane: No.

Jack: Well, it’s an old wives’ tale about summer winds that come in and manage to make things hot rather than cool. It’s a bad omen.

Diane: Oh.

Jack: So, in july, when a wind like this kicks up, well, you know trouble’s right around the corner. And here you are.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’m sorry to drop by unannounced. I just, um, wondered if I could talk to kyle for a few minutes.

Jack: Actually, he and summer are gone, but I’m glad to see you here.

Diane: Oh, really? Why is that?

Jack: I just haven’t had a chance to thank you.

Diane: Well, I’m not sure i know what I did to deserve your thanks, but I’m happy to find out.

Jack: What you did in the park, protecting our grandson from ashland locke.

Nick: Hey, I’m outside your house. I think you’re home. I can see the lights on. But maybe you’re asleep. Um…vick, just call me, okay? Call me back. Let me know you’re safe.

[ Wind whipping ]

Victoria: I’m telling you the truth, ashland. My security detail is on the way. That’s — that’s them on the phone. They’re gonna be here soon.

Ashland: Why should I believe a word you say? You’ve been lying to me for weeks.

Victoria: I’ve been lying to you? I can’t believe you say that with a straight face.

Ashland: I really do regret that it has to end this way, victoria. I do. I mean, but maybe it was inevitable. You think? I-I understood when we first met that we were both incredibly unique individuals. We were both powerhouses, ambitious. We were driven. We both wanted to be on top. So maybe it was a mistake for us to think that we could actually work this out because both of us can’t be on top. That’s the way the world works. One of us had to fall.

Victoria: I don’t know what you’re talking about. I just know that you have to leave now.

Ashland: I was honest with you. I was myself with you. Do you remember — do you remember when you gave me this ring, huh? The loch family ring. You told me it was a symbol for who I am now. It was supposed to represent our bright, shiny future. What does it represent now, victoria? What do you think? Huh?

Victoria: [ Breathes deeply ]

Ashland: Nothing. Nothing but your lies and your deception. I will never wear it again. But I’m gonna keep it because it will remind me of how cruel people can be.

Everything I did to you, you did to me, which makes you no better than me. In fact, you’re worse because i was willing to become a better person. I was willing to — to — to change myself because of you. I was willing to walk through fire for you!

Victoria: Ashland, please calm down.

Diane: Jack, you’re making too much of what I did.

Diane: No. It felt pretty great, actually.

Jack: I know kyle is very pleased with how you handled things. It meant a lot to both of us.

Diane: I’d do anything for our son. So, do you think he and summer will be home soon?

Jack: I really don’t know. Is everything alright?

Diane: Oh, yeah, definitely. I just, um — well, there’s just a couple of work issues that I’d like kyle’s advice about, but it — it can wait. Thanks, jack. Although…

Diane: Well, you do run the parent company. Maybe you can help.

Nikki: I’m afraid my investigators have not come up with any skeletons in diane’s closet.

Phyllis: I was hoping they’d come up with something good and juicy.

Nikki: I know. I’m disappointed, too.

Phyllis: Maybe ashley has come up with something. Where is she, anyway? I mean, nothing is more important than getting rid of diane.

Nikki: Oh, she texted. “Can’t make it tonight. Please keep me updated.”

Phyllis: Seriously? What else is she doing? Nothing is more important than this.

Nikki: Yeah, but then she goes on, “don’t worry about diane using allie again. Allie can hold her own.”

Phyllis: Oh, okay. Listen, I wish I had the same faith in allie that ashley does. Honestly, this girl — she’s lovely. She’s lovely and sweet. And you know diane. She takes advantage of people like that.

Nikki: Maybe ashley knows something about her grand-niece that we don’T.

Phyllis: I doubt it. Seriously, I can’t believe this is happening. Look at how quickly diane has wormed her way into the lives of people who live here. Walking around town, having coffee, eating, like she has no problem. She should be tarred and feathered. Honestly, it’s disgusting.

Nikki: Okay, you are really riled up tonight. Any particular reason?

Phyllis: I’ll tell you why. I had a conversation with summer. You know what summer said? She went on and on about diane and how wonderful she is because I guess she saved harrison from ashland. And she was going on like diane deserved a medal or a parade or something.

Nikki: That’s ridiculous. I was there. She sent michael a text. That’s the extent of her involvement.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? And you know she probably did it so everybody would fawn all over her.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Ashland locke. The gift that keeps on giving.

[ Doors rattling ]

Victoria: I don’t think you can blame me for how sad and lonely you– you’ve turned out to be. You did it to yourself.

Ashland: Stop saying that! You sound exactly like your father!

Victoria: Even if I had died — died in that crash

[Scoffs] You still wouldn’t have been loved because those feelings that I had for you — they were based on a lie. It was all false. I was in love with this man that you were pretending to be.

Ashland: And who was that, victoria? A stronger, younger version of your dad?

Victoria: No, no, not even close. I see you now. I see you for who you really are. You’re not the great and powerful ashland locke. And you’re definitely nowhere — nowhere near the man my father is. You’re not even poor, pathetic bobby defranco, who you left in new jersey all those years ago.

Ashland: Fine, fine! Okay, then who am I, victoria? Who the hell am I?!

Victoria: You’re pathetic! You’re sad and ugly and disgusting! No one could ever love you!

Ashland: Don’t say that!

Ashland: Ahh! No — you bitch. No, you are not gonna get to that phone.

Jack: I don’t want to step on any toes. Marchetti is kyle’s domain. Maybe you better wait and ask him your questions.

Diane: No, my — my questions are larger, philosophical ones, not specific to marchetti, things like protocol or early expectations versus long-term goals.

Jack: That’s what is troubling you? Come on. I would think for you that would be rudimentary. You have been in business as long as I have known you. Please tell me that pretending you were dead hasn’t taken away your ability to handle new situations.

Diane: Maybe I’m just a little rusty.

Jack: So fake it. Come on. I am convinced you can fake anything. You can bluff your way through a hundred different scenarios.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Are you teasing me or being deliberately mean?

Jack: I’ll never tell.

Diane: [ Laughs ]

Jack: Okay, fine. I’ll give you what advice I can. I was about to freshen my drink. Can I, um, maybe pour you one?

Diane: Sure, I’ll — I’ll take what you’re having, which I’m assuming is smooth and smoky and at least 25 years old.

Jack: You know me well.

Phyllis: That’s what’s garnering all this praise for diane? She texted michael?

Nikki: That’s it. She told him that ashland was in the park near harrison, which is a violation of his restraining order. But, my god, you would have thought she had saved the boy from a burning building, the way michael gushed over her.

Phyllis: What is wrong with michael? Seriously. All she did is what any good babysitter would do at the sign of trouble.

Nikki: I totally agree with you. The look that ashland gave her — I mean, it was like she had betrayed a confidence or something. And it made me wonder if maybe they had an arrangement and she double-crossed him.

Phyllis: Hmm. That would be just like diane.

Nikki: Oh, well, the worst part of all of this is that ashland got out of jail in a matter of hours.

Phyllis: Wow. Just sitting there in jail, simmering, stewing, sharpening his grudge.

Nikki: Exactly. And now this fiasco has made him even more furious.

Nick: Does someone want to tell me what is going on here?

Victoria: Nothing more to say to ashland. I’ve asked him to leave repeatedly.

Nick: Yet you’re still here. Why?

Ashland: I have committed no crime. I didn’t break in. She invited me in.

Victoria: Because you were lurking outside.

Nick: Vick, call the police.

Ashland: Oh, no, no, no. There’s no reason to call the police, right, victoria? You said yourself your security team is on their way right now, in spite of the fact that there’s been no intended malice on my part.

Nick: Everything you’ve ever done to this family’s with malice.

Ashland: Oh, you newmans — you’re all the same. You circle the wagons. You don’t trust anybody on the outside, even when they’re telling you the truth.

Victoria: When is the last time you told the truth?

Ashland: So what is this, nick, huh? You come busting in here. You break up a conversation between a husband and wife?

Victoria: You’re not my husband.

Ashland: We still have a relationship!

Nick: Hey, hey, hey.

Ashland: We have a bond that can’t be broken! You keep your hands off me.

Nick: Vick, call the police now.

Victoria: My phone’s in the kitchen.

Ashland: No! No! We are not finished. You stay where you are.

Nick: Don’t you talk to her like that!

Ashland: Oh, what are you now, huh? Nick, the protector? Is that it? Huh? Nick, the great protector? Let me tell you something. I’m gonna talk to your sister however I damn well please.

Nick: This is your last warning!

Ashland: Or what?!

Nick: You can walk out of here now on your own, or we’re gonna have a problem.

Victoria: I’m calling the police.

Ashland: I’ve done nothing wrong!

Victoria: You broke into my house. You — you threatened me. You grabbed me!

Ashland: No! Enough, alright? I —

Nick: You put your hands on her?!

Ashland: Ugh!

Nick: Ashland! Ashland!

Phyllis: You know, I’m sorry that ashland is a powder keg ready to explode. I’m really sorry about that. And I’m sure he’s making the newmans responsible for everything. I mean, why doesn’t he just point his anger toward someone who deserves it, like diane?

Nikki: Yeah, that’s a nice thought, but she would walk away unscathed. I don’t understand how she lives this charmed life.

Phyllis: I don’t get it. It — it baffles me, honestly. It seems like every single person in this town believes her. That’s why it’s up to us to get rid of her.

Nikki: We need to come up with a foolproof plan.

Phyllis: I’ve been thinking of something. Just hear me out. It seems like the key is her job at marchetti with kyle and summer. What if she was to — I don’t know — fail spectacularly and leave?

Nikki: I like the sound of that.

Phyllis: Well, this is what I’m thinking. What if we orchestrated it that she was intentionally trying to sabotage the company and it exploded? Maybe that way, kyle and summer will lose faith in her and they’ll want her to leave. I mean, kyle’s the key. Without the support from kyle, she has nothing. And she’ll get out of town.

Nikki: I am really liking this. I knew I could count on you to come up with something devious and underhanded.

Phyllis: Yeah, I’m just better at it than you are. But this time, you know, the ends justify the means.

Nikki: Okay. So, we have the general idea. How do we go about arranging for diane’s spectacular fail?

Diane: Thank you. I have to admit I’m — I’m a bit anxious about it. Working in P.R. For a big-time fashion house is a huge responsibility.

Jack: I would have said nothing makes you nervous.

Diane: Well, that’s the image I like to project. I’m only sharing this with you. I don’t generally let people see this side of me.

Jack: Well, gee, I’m flattered.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, given our history, there’s really no point in me trying to fool you. I mean, it’s like you said before — I can fake my way through any scenario. But I want this job at marchetti to be different. I don’t want to let kyle down.

Jack: I understand that.

Diane: So I have to know going in what I’m doing.

Jack: You don’t have to know everything on your first day. Kyle knows there is on-the-job training involved.

Diane: Yeah, but it’s not just kyle I’m worried about. I mean, I — I need to impress summer and — and the rest of the world.

Jack: Yeah, I get that. Kyle’s gonna give you the benefit of the doubt every time. Summer — well, she could be a little tougher.

Diane: Yeah, I can’t bluff or use my old bag of tricks with her.

Jack: Can I ask you a question about your old bag of tricks?

Diane: Go ahead.

Jack: Is there one in there where you show up asking for kyle when all along you really just wanted jack’s advice?

Diane: I’ll never tell.

Jack: [ Laughs ] God.

Diane: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: Locke! Get up. You’ve been a fake since the first day I met you. I’m not buying it. Get up! Locke?

Victoria: Oh, my god. What happened? Nick, what’s wrong?

Nick: I, um — I can’t feel a pulse.

Victoria: Ashland? Ashland?

Nick: Can you find a pulse? Vick. Life… doesn’t stop for diabetes.

Phyllis: Yeah. You know, I have to admit, sabotaging diane at marchetti, it’ll be tricky. I mean, we don’t want to do anything that will hurt the company. And also, summer shouldn’t have to suffer the consequences for diane.

Nikki: Oh, no, I don’t want that, either. The problem is, we don’t have anybody on the inside at marchetti. I mean, ashley is strictly on the jabot side of the things.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, there are people coming from italy to work, and also there are some new hires. Do we happen to know any of those new employees?

Phyllis: No. I mean, it’s ironic. Summer offered me a job there when she was in milan. I turned it down. I mean, I would be on the inside now.

Nikki: Why didn’t you take it?

Phyllis: It didn’t fit into my plans.

Nikki: It was because of jack, wasn’t it? You didn’t take the position because of him.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Jack was here. I didn’t want to leave, even for milan.

Nikki: I’m sorry, phyllis. You had your heart set on reuniting with jack, hopefully for good this time.

Phyllis: Yeah. It was going well, nikki. This time, it was going really well. It was.

[ Sighs ] You know what? That’s why I’m more determined to do this. I will do whatever it takes to get this bitch out of our lives for good.

Jack: I think you need to stop putting so much pressure on yourself.

Diane: I disagree. I don’t think I’m feeling enough pressure. I mean, I never expected to be back here. Sometimes it feels like a dream. I — I can’t believe I’m back in genoa city working on my relationship with my son. I have a good thing going. And I don’t want to mess it up.

Jack: Of course you don’t, but try to remember that kyle and summer are intelligent, rational people. They hired you knowing you were not an expert in public relations. They don’t expect you to light the world on fire in your first week. All they expect, I’m guessing, is commitment and honesty.

Diane: Honesty in public relations? Isn’t that a little unusual?

Jack: Not for companies under the jabot umbrella. I’m guessing that’s the hardest part for you.

Diane: Jack.

Jack: You may not like it, but it’s true.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’m just hoping a day will come when people stop rubbing my history in my face.

Jack: Old habits die hard.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

[ Sniffles ]

Nick: Vick?

Victoria: It’s no use. He’s dead.

Nick: Mnh. Did you call the police?

Victoria: No. I didn’t call 911. I-I-I just ran to the kitchen to get my phone, but I was — I was hoping that maybe you could get ashland out of here before — before bringing in the authorities.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I — I’m not sure it’s the right move.

Nick: What do you mean? Of course it’s the right move. Your ex-husband’s dead in your living room.

Victoria: Look, I’m well aware of that, nicholas. But neither one of us is thinking rational right now. Maybe we should call dad instead.

Nick: No, no, we’re not involving him in this, alright? This is on me.

Victoria: No, it’s not just — it’s not just you.

Nick: I’m responsible. I hit him. We got to do the right thing. When has circumventing the law ever worked out for us?

Victoria: Nicholas, but the consequences.

Nick: No, no, we’re gonna be fine, okay? We’re gonna be fine. He attacked you. He was going after you, so I had to hit him, and then he hit the ground. It’s a clear-cut case of self-defense. We’re fine.

Victoria: I don’t know. I don’t know if the district attorney’s office is gonna see it the same way.

Nick: Alright, fine. Don’t — if you don’t want to call the police, then call chance. He’s family. He’ll be able to tell us what to do next. Vick, if you don’t call him, I will.

Sharon: Oh, because of the winds?

Sharon: No. It’s okay. You can say it. Rey’s accident happened on a night that was very foggy. Although the weather didn’t turn out to be the reason why it happened.

Chance: Well, the last thing I wanted to do is bring up bad memories, so I apologize.

Sharon: It’s alright. I was thinking about him tonight anyway. How could I not?

Chance: Yeah. He’s been on my mind, too.

Sharon: So, how are things out there? Very bad?

Chance: No, actually, not too bad. A couple fallen trees, no injuries, minimal property damage, so…

Sharon: Well, that’s a relief.

Chance: Yeah. I’m hoping it stays calm and I’m just paranoid for no reason.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Give me a minute, will you? Hey, victoria. What’s up?

Victoria: Something happened, uh, tonight at my house. It was an — it was an accident.

Chance: An accident? Is anybody hurt?

Victoria: Ashland.

Chance: Okay. Have you called an ambulance?

Victoria: No. N-no, that isn’t necessary. Um, I’d prefer to keep it in the family for now.

Chance: Okay, t-tell me more about what happened.

Victoria: Just come to the house.

Chance: Okay, I’ll be right there.

[ Wind whipping ]

Nick: [ Sighs, clears throat ]

Victoria: I called chance.

Nick: [ Clears throat ] Good.

Victoria: He should be here soon. Nicholas, why don’t you just come back inside? It’s — it’s really windy.

Nick: You know, I was just coming by to see if you were okay. I was banging on the door. You weren’t answering, so i thought maybe you were asleep. So, I was about to leave, but then something didn’t feel right, so I went around back and I entered through the back doors and then that’s when it happened. It was just so fast, you know? What did I do?

Victoria: Nicholas, you don’t have to go over it again. There’s no need for you to get more worked up than you already are.

Nick: No, I got to get this straight for when chance gets here. You know, I got to say it out loud and piece it together. He’d attacked you, you know, and he was coming after you again, so I… so I hit him, and then he fell down. I was just trying to stop him. Obviously, I didn’t want him to die.

Victoria: Of course you didn’t want him to die. It was an accident. He fell, and he hit his head. It’s as simple as that.

Nick: It doesn’t feel that simple.

Victoria: Nicholas, it’s gonna be okay. You need to calm down, and you need to think about what you’re gonna say to chance.

Nick: Yeah. I don’t want him, you know, to doubt me for any reason. You’re right.

Victoria: Just tell me what i can do.

Nick: Nothing. I just — I — I got to walk this off.

Victoria: Nicholas! Nick.

Diane: I want you to know I’m not taking this opportunity for granted. I realize what a gift kyle and summer have given me.

Jack: I know you do.

Diane: I-I never expected to have a job like this after only a few months back in town. It’s beyond what I could have hoped for. You know, to work with kyle and summer so closely — it really means a lot to me.

Jack: Well, I’m glad you appreciate the position you’re in.

Diane: And I realize that you could have stepped in and stopped them from hiring me. But you didn’T. And I appreciate that, too.

Jack: I wanted kyle to be his own man, to make his own decisions. Now I have to abide by that.

Diane: Well, despite all that, I’m sure it’s difficult for you to see kyle so readily accepting me.

Jack: It only proves that something was missing in his life. You coming back has filled that void.

Diane: All those years i missed. You know, all that time, you raised him alone.

Jack: Well, it wasn’t just me. The abbotts never do anything alone.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Still, you must have some resentment towards me.

Jack: I’ve learned a lot about resentment. It’s a waste of time and energy.

Diane: Well, I think you’ve shown remarkable restraint. And I thank you for that.

Jack: As long as you know it wasn’t for your benefit.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] I accept that. You want to know a secret?

Jack: I don’t know. Do I?

Diane: Well, in the interest of honesty, I think I should share it with you.

Jack: Go ahead.

Diane: It’s my hope that one day you and I will be in a place where…we can be friends.

Victoria: Nick?

Nick: Hey.

Victoria: Are you — are you — are you calming down?

Nick: I’m just trying to sort things out. I can barely think.

Victoria: Look, just don’t worry about anything else. You saved my life tonight.

Nick: Did I?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I saw the look in ashland’s eyes. He was gonna kill me. He was — he was just acting so strange. I didn’t know what he was gonna do, but I know he wanted me dead. He just kept talking about saying our last goodbyes and how he wished I had died in that car accident.

Nick: That’s sick. He’s sick. I’m sorry.

Victoria: I didn’t know what to do. I mean, before you got there, I was just looking for anything to fight him off with. I mean, he wasn’t — even the police, that wasn’t gonna slow him down. He — you did what you had to do to stop him, and I’m — I’m so grateful.

Nick: Look, I’m glad that i could be there for you. But I took a man’s life tonight. There’s no changing that.

Victoria: I know that. I know you did. But you were protecting me. You had my back. You had my back like you always have promised me. You — you kept your word. I promise you I’m gonna do everything that I can to help you.

Nick: I know. I know I can count on you. I know. Alright, we should get back to the house. We need to be there when chance arrives. Here’s to real flavors…

Diane: Aww. Thanks for letting me see harrison. Even to peek in on him while he’s sleeping brings me so much joy.

Jack: Our grandson can put a smile on your face even when he’s half asleep.

Diane: That’s the second time you’ve used that phrase.

Jack: What phrase?

Diane: “Our grandson.” I have to admit, it warms my heart when I hear it. There’s really nothing like it, is there?

No, there is not, nothing I’ve found.

Diane: I’m so glad I decided to reclaim my life here. You know, even if it ended tomorrow, just spending time with kyle and harrison has made it all worth it. Even though harrison still doesn’t know I’m his grandmother.

Jack: And that’s for kyle to decide when that happens, right?

Diane: Right. I’ve taken up enough of your time. You know, thanks, jack, for everything. Your advice was spot on, and it means a lot.

Jack: I’ll show you out. Well, looks like the wind let up a little bit. Maybe there’s no trouble tonight after all.

Diane: [ Chuckles ]

Nikki: You know, I definitely think you’re onto something. Discrediting diane at her new job would be a very effective way to get rid of her.

Phyllis: Yeah, I know. We just need someone on the inside to help us out. It’s too bad that chelsea turned down that design gig. I mean, she could have helped us. She likes schemes, right?

Nikki: Yeah, but we need somebody who has an ax to grind with diane. That’s not chelsea.

Phyllis: No one in this town wants diane gone as much as we do.

Nikki: And that’s why it should be you. Can’t you tell summer that you’ve had a change of heart and you want to work at marchetti now?

Phyllis: No. I run this hotel. I can’t do that.

Nikki: Oh, well, how busy are you? I mean, this place seems to run itself.

Phyllis: Well, that’s not completely accurate. Maybe something can be done.

Nick: I don’t see chance’s car. He must not be here yet.

Victoria: I’m sure he’s on his way. Look, at least it’ll give you a little more time to figure out what you’re gonna say.

Nick: I’m just gonna say the truth. What else can I do?

[ Groans ]

[ Knock on door ] Victoria, it’s billy.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Hey. Come in.

Billy: Hey. Thank you. I, uh, hope it’s not a bad time.

Victoria: What are you doing here?

Billy: Well, I went by your office, and your — your mother said I could find you here.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] What can I do for you?

Billy: I, uh — I just wanted to fill you in. I have to go out of town for work, to los angeles with billy, and so I’m not gonna be able to pick up the kids at camp. Just wanted to make sure that’s not a problem for you.

Victoria: Well, duty calls. If you’re gone, you’re gone.

Billy: You okay? You seem a little tense.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: Hey, there.

Sally: Hi. Thank you for rearranging your evening to meet with me.

Chloe: No problem. So, is this about the job offer?

Sally: So, I have been given the go-ahead to bring you on as coo. But I need to be upfront with you about the situation you’re gonna be walking into.

Chloe: Transparency is good.

Sally: Okay, here’s the deal. Nick and victoria agreed to keep me on for a trial period of three months, at which point they will assess my performance. Which means that you, too, will be coming on, on a trial basis. So there’s no guarantees. Nothing is set.

Chloe: So, the pressure is on?

Sally: If you are not okay with being hired under these terms, I totally understand.

Chloe: Just to be clear, this isn’t you saying you’d rather I didn’t accept the original offer, that you would rather take on someone more palatable to victoria and nick, someone with more experience, a heavy hitter?

Sally: No, that is exactly what the newmans assumed that I would do. But you and I work really well together. I think we just click, and I trust you implicitly.

Chloe: I agree.

Sally: And I have absolute faith in your ability to rise to the occasion and learn the business in record time, which is exactly what I told them. So they said that I could choose my own right hand. So if you still want the job and you’re okay with living in the gray area —

Chloe: I am more than okay with it. Really?

Chloe: Really.

Sally: Hallelujah.

[ Chuckles ]

Chloe: I appreciate the offer and I accept the challenge.

Sally: Well, it will definitely be that.

Chloe: And for the record, I don’t just want this job because chelsea decided to end our partnership. It’s not about becoming unemployed. Well, only to the extent that I wouldn’t have been available otherwise.

Sally: Yeah, and I’m glad that you were. And now you’re taken. So welcome aboard, chloe.

Chloe: Ooh! Thank you. And I plan to work my tail off to get this right.

Sally: I know. That’s why I hired you.

Chloe: Well, I — I also have to live up to the standard that you’ve set. Clearly, you have made an impact at newman media, or victoria never would have kept you on, given that you’re involved with the former ceo, one of her least-favorite humans.

Noah: I wanted to wait until you were a little bit more settled at newman before I brought this up. Mom and allie, they kept saying that I should be honest with you. And it’s been weighing on me.

Nick: [ Chuckling ] Okay. Starting to worry me a little bit.

Noah: It’s — it’s not gonna be an easy thing to discuss with you, but [Sighs] Here it goes. First off, I need you to know that this decision has nothing to do with you and everything to do with what I want. Which if you would have asked me a month ago, I wouldn’t even be able to articulate to you, because I hadn’t figured it out yet.

Nick: Okay. Go on.

Noah: I’ve kept trying on different versions of myself and — and taking stabs at different career paths, hoping something would feel right and something would give my life direction, give it meaning. I think I finally found what that thing is.

Nick: I’m pretty sure I know where this is heading. You want out of new hope?

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: I just have a lot on my mind.

Billy: I’m sure you do. I heard ashland is back in town.

Victoria: Oh. He’s the least of my worries.

Billy: Well, still, he’s got no reason to be here. I mean, why’s he still hanging around?

Victoria: I imagine that it has to do with harrison.

Billy: I mean, he can’t honestly think that that door is still open. He lied to his son about having cancer. He let kyle take him to milan to raise him. He’s got a restraining order out against them.

Victoria: Which he violated today.

Billy: Are you kidding me? Did he get caught?

Victoria: The police arrested him in the middle of chancellor park. And from what I understand, ashland has already made bail.

Billy: Figures.

Victoria: Hopefully, he’ll — he’ll figure out that there’s nothing tying him here and he’ll leave.

[ Slam in wind ]

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Billy: You okay?

Victoria: Yeah, I-I’m fine. I-I’m sorry. I know, I jumped a mile.

Billy: It’s alright. You know, this old place. It cracks and pops when the wind blows. You remember how scared the kids used to get?

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Yes, I do. Now they just make a game out of it.

Billy: Yeah. “What monster made that sound?” Is the, uh, the grumpy goblin — is that still the winner?

Victoria: Well, now that katie’s in her sci-fi phase, she likes to speculate about an alien who’s taken up residence in the attic.

Billy: I do not believe that she is reading sci-fi. Seems like yesterday we were teaching her the alphabet.

Victoria: I sort of wish that we could just stop time — you know? — And keep them at this age where they’re old enough to not need us to hold their hand anymore, but they’re young enough to just be innocent and get excited about everything.

Billy: I hear you. Although it’s nice to see the world through their innocent eyes. Cuts through the cynicism. Helps you see the bright side a little bit, doesn’t it?

Victoria: That’s true. It’s one of the many things that I’m looking forward to about them coming home again.

Billy: You know, vick, now that you mention that, I’m a little concerned about ashland being in town. I mean, he’s got no reason to set foot in genoa city.

Victoria: I agree.

Billy: And I’m sure getting handcuffed and thrown in the back of a car pissed him off. You got to wonder about his headspace.

Victoria: You know, I have no clue what’s going on in ashland’s head. And honestly, I don’t care.

Billy: Well, I do, vick. And honestly, I’m a little worried about you being home alone, especially with the kids coming back here. I mean, I don’t want them in the middle of all this.

Victoria: You’re making too much of this, billy.

Billy: Am I really?

Victoria: Yes, because if ashland is gonna be mad at anyone, it’s gonna be the abbotts. They’re the ones who had him arrested. And if anything arises, I’m sure that I can handle the situation. As you well know, my father has a security detail watching out for me.

Billy: Okay, well, for once, I’m grateful.

Victoria: Me too.

[ Sighs ] So you don’t have to worry about me. Now, let’s get back to your original question. I would honestly be happy to pick up the kids from camp on my own. Truly. I mean, if you need to go out of town for business, it’s fine. I can handle it. I’m actually looking forward to spending some time with them on my own.

Billy: What about work?

Victoria: Oh, it’s not an issue. Now that mom and nick are part of the executive team, it’s easier for me to step away from the office. So go ahead, please. Go to california with lily. And rest easy. Billy, seriously, I’m fine. You have nothing to worry about. But I do have a lot of work to do, so please just go.

Billy: Okay. I’ll let you get to it.

Victoria: Have a good evening. Safe travels.

Billy: Thank you.

Victoria: Alright.

[ Winds continues blowing ]

[ Sighs ]

Adam: Thank you.

Sally: Will you give me a minute? Order some drinks, and we’ll celebrate.

Chloe: Sure.

Sally: Adam, wait.% Don’t be a coward and run away from this. Talk to me. Please.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sally: Did you get my voicemail?

Adam: Sally…

Sally: Did you get my voicemail?

Adam: Look, let’s not do this again, okay? I don’t get any pleasure out of being cruel to you.

Sally: I want an answer. Are you destroying what we had to give me a chance to keep my job at newman media? Did you think, by breaking things off, victoria would have an easier time accepting me?

Adam: Were you not listening to me? This has nothing to do with victoria and it has nothing to do with your career.

Sally: I don’t want to be ceo under these circumstances. Not if it means losing you. So, in spite of your past and the person that you used to be, I’m not buying this, adam. I refuse to believe that you could just so easily shut off your feelings for me and throw it all away. Hi, I’m nancy.

Adam: I thought that I made it clear why I ended things. You were a liability. You were standing between me and everything that I want. Okay? My father’s approval — another chance for me to prove myself. And that’s something that’s never gonna happen if I am tied to you or — or newman enterprises. And honestly, sally, that’s what you should be focused on right now, is trying to prove yourself, not chasing after a man who doesn’t love you.

Sally: I refuse to believe that.

Adam: Well, suit yourself. Okay? I was a little surprised that victoria decided to let you stay, even though you do deserve it. So you need to make the most of this. It’s over, sally. Just accept it and stop wasting time — yours and mine.

Sally: [ Sniffles ]

Adam: Just do what you need to do to make the most of your life and what you deserve. Okay? That’s what I’m doing.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Chelsea: Everything alright?

Adam: We’re done here.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Noah: I want to turn the top of the tower into an art-inspired nightclub — a lounge, bar, something in that realm.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Wow. That is the last thing I was expecting to hear. But keep going.

Noah: I want to make a space where people can come and feel inspired. You know, they could come and they could have fun and relax and socialize. I could take my experience and knowledge from working at the underground and managing the top of the tower with all the things I learned while being in the london art culture. I could take my passion for art, video, photography, transforming spaces and — and just make something new and make something people can actually be excited about. So, what do you think?

Nick: Um, have you run this by your grandfather?

Noah: No. I wanted to talk to you first. I still need to sell grandpa on the idea that a nightclub would be more profitable for newman tower than some upscale restaurant, which means running the numbers, putting together a solid business plan to see the vision through.

Nick: Yeah, you’re definitely gonna need that.

Noah: And, dad, I promise I’m not gonna leave you or new hope in the lurch. I’m gonna honor my commitment. I’ll stay on until we find a replacement that you’re satisfied with. I know that you got to be disappointed. You thought that I was gonna step in at new hope while you took care of things at newman, and — and I hate that I’m letting you down.

Nick: No. Are you serious? You can never do that with me. Ever. And after hearing your pitch, I’m anything but disappointed.

Noah: [ Chuckles ] Seriously?

Nick: Yeah! I’m serious. I love seeing you like this. This is my guy right here. Look at you. Your eyes are all lit up. You’re animated. You’re excited about something. I can’t tell you the last time you were excited about something.

Noah: Thank you. I mean, if I’m telling the truth, it feels good.

Nick: It should. It’s an inspired idea. And this town has nothing like it.

Noah: That’s the dream.

Nick: Well, go out there and make it a reality, alright? I believe in you. You can do this. You have my support, and I love you. So bring it in. Come on, man.

Noah: Aww. [ Chuckles ]

[ Breathing heavily ] Truth is… I’ve never really known how to care for my hardwood floors.

Sally: Shall we toast to our new arrangement?

Chloe: Yeah, in — inn a minute. Um, what just happened with you and adam? Things seem pretty tense back there.

Sally: [ Sighs ] Adam and I are no longer together.

Chloe: Oh, I — I didn’t realize that.

Sally: Yeah, well, few people know.

[ Sighs ] But if you are about to say how happy and relieved you are, for my sake…

Chloe: Are you okay?

Sally: What I am is single-minded about my work and about the future at the helm of newman media. So a toast to saying yes when opportunity knocks, and the pair of us kicking ass and taking names together.

Chloe: Hear, hear.

Chloe: Um, I’m — I’m — I’m sorry, but, um… did adam expect you to walk away from the ceo gig in solidarity? Is that what came between you?

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Really doesn’t matter. What’s done is done. Let’s just move on, ’cause the clock is ticking. Our every move and decision is gonna be under victoria’s microscope, so we really need to start strategizing.

Chloe: I doubt that it’s gonna be as easy for you as you’re making it sound. I know how invested you were in that relationship.

Sally: Well, I refuse to let my personal problems make me lose this job, too.

Chloe: Good. Hold on to that. Because adam has a bad habit of keeping women in his orbit, making them feel like they have something special. Like you were the only one who truly understands him.

Sally: Thank you for that.

Chloe: I know that I have sounded like a broken record since you two started dating, but this is why. I knew it was gonna end badly. It always does. I have seen it happen multiple times, and it is infuriating to watch him treat people like this. You stay mired in that toxic mix, and adam will cost you everything. Don’t let him. Don’t give him that power. You are in this position because of who you are, because of your amazing talent and drive. So if adam says it’s over, let it be over. You have bigger fish to fry.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Chelsea: Oh! I can’t believe the way adam treated you just now. I feel terrible for you.

Noah: Whew. That’s a relief. I was — I was kinda worried about telling you.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] You know, how many career changes I’ve had? It would take a lot of nerve of me to be judging you right now.

Noah: Let’s just say I was prepared for this conversation to go in a very different way.

Nick: Listen, I can’t lie to you. I was really excited of, uh, the possibility of you continuing my work at new hope. But, son, what is far more important to me is that you’re happy, and if this is what it takes, then so be it. I hope you know that you will always have my support, no matter what. You know that, right?

Noah: Yeah. Yeah, it’s like someone reminded me, that this is probably how you’d react, to give me the guts to talk to you.

Nick: Well, that’s a smart person. You should keep them around.

Noah: Speaking of allie, I should probably go home and get changed. We got a date tonight?

Nick: Ooh. Alright. Well, keep me posted on the progress of your nightclub.

Noah: I will.

Nick: And you know I have an endless amount of fatherly advice on pretty much every topic, so I’m here.

Noah: Okay, okay. Good to know.

Nick: Have a good time tonight.

Noah: That’s the easy part. Hey, billy, how’s it going? Good to see you.

Billy: Good to see you, too. How you doing?

Nick: I’m good. No offense. I got to go.

Billy: Alright, well, I’ll cut to the chase and just tell you why I’m glad I ran into you.

Nick: Alright. Shoot.

Billy: Victoria? Is she okay?

Nick: In what sense?

Billy: She’s on edge, nick, and she’s covering it up.

Nick: I haven’t noticed anything like that.

Billy: Okay, well, I know ashland’s back in town, and he got arrested for violating his restraining order. And I also know what he’s capable of, and I’m pretty sure you do, too.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] What — what the hell are you doing out there?

Ashland: I was debating whether to even make my presence known.

Victoria: As opposed to what? Hiding out in the bushes and spying on me. What’s wrong with you?

Ashland: I just wanted to see you one last time.

Victoria: You shouldn’t be here right now. Maybe I should call the police. Do I need a restraining order against you?

Ashland: I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to scare you. But after everything we’ve shared, I just…

[ Sighs ] I don’t know how to say goodbye.

Chelsea: But I lined up an incredible designer from new york to take over for me and continue on at fenmore’S.

Chloe: Yeah, I heard about that, but —

Chelsea: Even if you didn’t hit it off with him, you’re gonna — you’re gonna have sally to join you? Come on, chloe, anybody but her. And I don’t understand how lauren would be on board with this.

Sally: Okay, I think you misunderstood. It’s the other way around.

Chelsea: You’ve lost me.

Sally: You see, chelsea, I’m still the ceo of newman media, so I’m bringing chloe on as my coo. Deal’s done. We’re just hammering out the details of her offer before we get down to work.

Chelsea: When I heard victoria was in charge again, I thought that meant adam was head of new media.

Sally: Well, he is not interested. He’s moving on… from everything.

Chelsea: Including you, apparently. Wow. That lasted about as long as I expected it to.

Nick: Billy, don’t lose any sleep over victoria, alright? Just stay out of it.

Billy: Wow. Congratulations. You’ve been back working on your father’s company for five minutes, and you already sound like the old man. Telling me not to worry about victoria. That’s not gonna happen, nick, for two reasons. One, she’s the mother of my children. And second of all, I have damn good reason to worry about her right now.

Nick: Well, you have this compulsion to play white knight to a woman who, frankly, has gotten over you years ago.

Billy: Look, I was just with victoria. I know her. She’s covering up how upset she is that that snake is slithering around. And he’s got to be desperate if he’s reckless enough to disobey a court order.

Nick: He’s an entitled jerk who thinks rules are for other people. There’s no surprise there.

Billy: Nick, what are you doing here? Okay, we’re talking about victoria’s safety. Ashland was put in handcuffs and thrown in the back of a car. You don’t think he’s gonna want to retaliate?

Nick: Against kyle, maybe. He’s the one with the restraining order.

Billy: Oh, that’s a very logical way of thinking about this. Unfortunately, there’s nothing logical about the way ashland thinks.

Nick: Look, billy, I appreciate your concern. I really do. But we’re done with this.

Billy: You know, it wasn’t that long ago we were on the same side, trying to show victoria the man that she was about to marry. We want the same thing here. Now, I’m about to go out of town with lily for work. I can stick around to keep an eye on victoria, if that would make it better.

Nick: You do not need to do that, because there’s nothing for you to do. I am not gonna let ashland hurt victoria. That is my promise to you. Now, go on your trip. Give my best to lily.

Billy: Go check on your sister. Make sure she’s okay.

[ Footsteps departing ]

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Okay, fine. I-I’ll hear you out,% but only if you agree to finally leave me alone after this.

Ashland: Thank you.

[ Door lock clicks ] It’s so hard to see you like this. So wary. But it’s hard to stay away, too. Don’t you feel the same way? Isn’t there some part of you, after everything we’ve shared? The happiest days of my life. Yours, too. You told me so. Do you really look at me right now and feel that it’s all over between us?

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Victoria: It’s over. It’s been over. It’s past time for you to accept that.

Ashland: Your father. Your family. They’ve turned you against me.

Victoria: This is he talking, telling you there is nothing left between us. After new york, I thought you’d be certain about that. But you don’t like to lose.

Ashland: Don’t do that.

Victoria: Ashland —

Ashland: I will not be dismissed! With depression, you just feel…blah.

[ Music plays ]

[ Wind blowing ]

Noah: Whoo! That wind came up out of nowhere.

Allie: Yeah, reminds me of santa anas.

Noah: Good thing they put those barriers up around the deck.

Allie: So… how much longer do I have to wait?

Noah: For me to get us drinks?

Allie: No, silly, for you to tell me how the conversation went with your dad. How’d it go?

Noah: It was great.

Allie: Really?

Noah: Yeah.

Allie: Oh, I’m so happy for you, noah. And did he love the whole art-themed lounge?

Noah: Yeah, yeah, he sure did, but he said he was most excited that I was fired up about something again. He just wants to see me happy. So you were right.

Allie: Oh, wait, I’m sorry, i didn’t hear that. What did you say?

Noah: You were right.

Allie: Um, no, try again.

[ Laughs ] I’m so glad that everything worked out. Now time to celebrate.

[ Chuckles ]

Sally: First, you dump chloe with no warning, because of your own bizarre reason.

Chelsea: Is that what she told you? Because our partnership wasn’t working for her either. You made that very clear.

Sally: So, in other words, you screwed up, and chloe called you out on it.

Chloe: I completely understand that chelsea needed to do that for herself. You were feeling very overwhelmed.

Sally: And yet you can’t show her the same grace and understanding?? You can’t be happy that your dearest friend landed in such a good place without missing a beat.

Chloe: And it is. It’s — it’s a good place.

Chelsea: Really? Really? You like working with sally that much?

Chloe: We’re a good team.

Chelsea: So, you’ll replace me with her, of all people?

Chloe: It’s not like that.

Chelsea: I should have known you would do this, when you hired her to work for the fashion platform without even asking me.

Chloe: Because you weren’t even working at the company. I mean, you weren’t even in the same town.

Chelsea: Look how the tables have turned. She used to be your subordinate. Now she’s your boss. Do you see how manipulative she is?

Sally: Okay, you know what? I’m really sorry that your life is so empty and miserable that you have nothing better to do than spread your poison. But nobody at this table cares. So why don’t you just go spew it somewhere else?

Chelsea: You know what? I hate to disappoint you, but my life is going great right now. I’m also embarking on an exciting, new partnership. So good luck with the job adam gave you because you were sleeping with him at the time. At least he left you with something.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Ashland: Your trust in me has been shaken to the core.

Victoria: Not shaken. Destroyed.

Ashland: You think I’m still the ruthless man I used to be? Okay, fine, I admit it. I never cared about anything I did in my past. I never felt remorse for anything I ever did. I knew I should, but I didn’T.

Victoria: Finally. Finally, you admit that your contrition was just all an act?

Ashland: Yeah.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: It was, at first, but then you changed me, victoria! God, I’ve said this to you a hundred times! Your love, our marriage — it made me want to be a better person! And then you just took all of that away from me! And now I really am that lost man that you and your father have accused me of being all along. You were my whole heart and my soul.

[ Sighs ] And now they’ve — they’ve both been ripped away from me.

Victoria: I’m not gonna take the blame for that. You’ve brought this all on yourself.

Ashland: I feel pain because of you! Because you made me feel again! Don’t you understand that?! Because I believed you when you told me you would always love me, no matter what.

Victoria: Because you wanted to believe it. You wanted to believe that I would forgive and forget all of your monumental lies. That I would just forgive them and go on and — and love you as if nothing had ever happened.

Ashland: You just cannot accept the fact that something important has changed inside of me, can you? Oh, no, wait. Maybe it’s that you see the change, but you don’t care.

Victoria: Well, what really is the point? It’s over. There’s nothing left to talk about. There’s absolutely nothing left for you to fight for.

Ashland: And nothing left to lose. For people who are a little intense about hydration.

Allie: Alright, alright. You were right, too.

Noah: I’m usually right. So, what exactly was I right about this time?

Allie: This place is pretty chill at night.

Noah: Yeah, it’s a lot more mellow during the day.

Allie: Mellow is overrated.

Noah: Do you want to dance?

Allie: I thought you’d never ask.

[ Upbeat music plays ]

[ Slow music plays ]

Noah: I have a confession to make.

Allie: Oh?

Noah: I can’t stop thinking about our kiss.

Noah: Oh?

Sally: What an utter witch.

Chloe: She has for moments.

Sally: What do you think is going on between her and billy?

Chloe: Oh, they’re just working together. Something about a podcast.

Sally: Okay, well, that’s just weird.

Chloe: Yeah, it did seem like a hard left turn. Something that I know nothing about. But, um, you know, if that’s what she needs to do to finish healing, then I wish her the best.

Sally: You are so generous towards her, even though she screwed you over.

Chloe: Well, you know, we might still be on the outs, but I do care about her. Anyway, you and I have more important things to think about, like proving to victoria that she couldn’t find a better team to run newman media.

Sally: Well, when you’re right, you’re right.

Chelsea: [ Laughing ] Oh, we’re definitely not doing a podcast on that. That’s for sure.

Billy: Well, you never know.

Chelsea: Alright. Whatever you say, boss.

Billy: Alright, enough with the “boss.” We’ve talked about this. We are partners. Let’s try and remember that.

Chelsea: Whatever you say, partner.

Billy: That sounds better. Um, I e-mailed you a few ideas for the podcast. I’d like to go over them when I get back. I got to go out of town for work.

Chelsea: Oh. How long will you be gone?

Billy: A few days. Depends on how well the meetings go. Maybe more.

Chelsea: Well, I look forward to hearing your ideas. I will have plenty of feedback for you when you get home.

Billy: Yeah, that — that, I am sure of.

Chelsea: Yeah.

[ Chuckles ]

Sally: I wonder what lily thinks of this new partnership.

Chloe: Yeah, I wouldn’t know. And frankly, it’s none of my business. So, uh, when can I start?

Sally: Uh, right. Yes. Sorry. Focus. Um, your first date can be tomorrow if it works for you.

Chloe: Sounds great. I’ll see you bright and early, hit the ground running.

Sally: That’s the spirit.

Chelsea: [ Laughing ]

Billy: I told you.

Chelsea: I believe it. Absolutely. I saw with my own eyes.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Victoria: This conversation is over. I gave you your chance, and now I-I just want you to leave.

Ashland: I’m not finished.

Victoria: I didn’t have to let you in, but I did. Okay? I heard you out.

Ashland: And now I’m dismissed.

Victoria: There’s absolutely no reason to go around and around about this. Whatever you thought would happen when you came here, whatever fantasies you had about how this was gonna go, it didn’t happen, and I don’t want to hear any more. I just want you to leave my home. I want you to leave town. Do you understand what I’m saying?

Ashland: No, no. You want me gone because you can’t face up to what you did, to the sacrifices you made when you gave up on us.

Victoria: Stop it. You can’t manipulate me anymore. I stopped giving a damn about you the day that I realized who you were.

Ashland: And who am I?! Victoria, who am I to you?! Worthless? Pathetic? Something who could just toss aside, like so much trash? No, no. There’s only one way that you’re gonna be done with me. I see that now. Only one way… to end this.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: I’m sorry, but you really can’t seriously be giving adam this much credit. You think that he broke up with sally so that we wouldn’t fire her?

Nick: I’m not nominating the guy for sainthood or anything close to that. I’m just saying, there have been some times in adam’s life where he’s been selfless, like when he saved faith’s life.

Victoria: Oh, believe me, I haven’t forgotten that, but adam has also done some extremely egregious things that far outweighs [Scoffs] A few acts of kindness. And I am not going to give him the benefit of the doubt while he’s making all of these big moves, like threatening that he’s going to walk away from newman enterprises and from us for good. Breaking things off with sally, it makes me wonder if maybe there’s something bigger going on here, something that he has planned.

Nick: Like what? Some revenge plot against us?

Victoria: I don’t know, but I’m not buying that he’s walking away from the company for good. Even when he says he’s trying to walk on the straight and narrow, adam is like a dark cloud hanging over newman. It’s his nature. And that’s never going to change.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Victor: Son. Hope you had enough time to think about your decision to step away from newman.

Adam: I’m sorry, dad. That’s just not the case.

Victor: And I recall that you had done that before, you know? Then you eventually came back. What would it take to convince you to stay?

Sharon: So there’s something great that’s going on with you. Can I assume that it has something to do with the lovely allie?

Noah: What can possibly give you that idea?

Sharon: Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the look on your face whenever you’re around her or talking about her. Let’s see, what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh, I know — happy.

Noah: That’s very funny. But, yeah, yeah, I like her. She’s cool, easy to hang out with.

Sharon: She kind of took you by surprise, didn’t she?

Noah: Yeah, I can’t remember ever feeling so comfortable and so relaxed with someone this quickly.

Sharon: Why do you make that sound like it’s a bad thing?

Noah: It isn’T. Just makes me wonder if this thing with allie could really go anywhere.

Ashley: Hi.

Allie: Hey.

Ashley: I hope I’m not interrupting.

Allie: Oh, not at all. I was just looking over my materials from the jabot orientation. I want to be fully prepped for my first day at the lab tomorrow.

Ashley: I love how enthusiastic you are, and I’m sure you’re going to be more than ready.

Allie: I cannot wait, ashley. I also love that you and i are both so at home in the lab, just like your dad.

Allie: It must be in the genes.

Ashley: I think it has to be. So how’s everything going with you, getting to know the family and everything?

Allie: It’s been wonderful, to say the least. Better than what I was expecting. Not that I was expecting anything bad or anything. I was just… god, I was so nervous when I first came here. I didn’t know how you guys would feel about me, how I feel about you, what I would say. It was pretty scary.

Ashley: Yeah, I bet.

Allie: Yeah.

Ashley: And strange, too. I mean, the way you met jack in L.A., Right? And you found out you got a grandfather, and then you have this whole family, and — and then on top of it all, you find out that diane orchestrated the entire thing.

Allie: Yeah. Yeah, it was a bit mind-blowing, but I will be forever grateful to be in this big, loving family that I never knew I had.

Ashley: Yeah, well, just so you know, you are the gift to us, and I mean that from my heart. But it had to be very overwhelming, and I’m sure that it still is because there’s so many intense dynamics, right? I mean, I can only imagine what you think of all that.

Allie: Why do I get the feeling that you’re really asking about diane?

Phyllis: Hey, jack. Hey.

Jack: Hey, uh… good to see you.

Phyllis: Yeah. You, too. You just taking a walk or going somewhere in particular?

Jack: I have a meeting later with some of the original marchetti board members. They just flew in from italy.

Phyllis: Ah, that’s right. Summer had me reserve some suites for them.

Jack: Right. Of course.

Phyllis: Well, I won’t keep you.

Jack: Well, have a nice day.

Phyllis: Yeah, you, too. You know what, jack? Wait a second. There is something I want to say.

Phyllis: Ashley.

Jack: I hope you two didn’t have any kind of a run-in.

Phyllis: No, not at all. She told me that — that you told her about what happened between us.

Jack: You have an issue with my confiding in ashley?

Phyllis: Well, no. I mean, of course you talk to your sister. Of course you would, but… I just want you to know that she understands the way I reacted to diane.

Jack: She told you that?

Phyllis: Yeah. Ashley and I are on the same side. That’s a first.

Jack: Yeah, that is a surprise, but ashley has always had a distinctively unique perspective on things.

Phyllis: Okay, well, she sees diane the same way I do.

Jack: I think she’s as determined as you are to see the worst in diane.

Phyllis: Okay, but you respect ashley. You respect her opinion, right? Does her stance on diane not change your mind at all?

Jack: You keep trying to make this a referendum on diane.

Phyllis: Okay, because this is about my alleged unhappiness, right, which is impossible right now for me to disprove.

Jack: I was just suggesting it’s more about us.

Phyllis: Okay, yes, jack, I really, really want you to know that diane was never, ever more important than my feelings for you, ever.

Jack: You know what? I have to get to the office.

Nick: Adam has made some significant strides with some of the relationships in this family.

Victoria: Well, don’t get me wrong, nicholas. I don’t even blame adam for being the way that he is, given everything we’ve learned about his childhood. And, yes, he has been on comparatively good behavior. But that doesn’t mean that I can trust his loyalty, because it’s always flip-flopping back and forth, not to mention his intense competitive streak, his constant need for dad’s approval, his angry resentment every time he’s shunned. Those character flaws have always remained the same.

Nick: I can’t disagree with that.

Victoria: Which is why there is no room for him at the new newman enterprises. Time will tell what is true intentions are.

Nick: And very soon we’re going to see if sally deserves her spot.

Victoria: But one thing i already know [Sighs] Is that it feels so good and so right having you back by my side at newman.

Adam: Oh, so now you want to know what it would take to get me back, huh? You know, you could’ve kept me in this very office, but you chose victoria, so I don’t think there’s anything else to say on that subject.

Victor: So then why are you here?

Adam: Well, for starters, I wanted to finish my earlier conversation with victoria about sally.

Victor: Ooh, I understand you ended your relationship with her.

Adam: I don’t doubt that you are thrilled about that. And you’ll be even happier to learn that I realized getting involved with her was a mistake in the first place.

Victor: Oh, well, that’s a sudden realization.

Adam: I just hope that victoria and the rest of you will give her a chance to prove herself at newman now that she has no connection to me. You guys would be fools not to keep her on.

Victor: Let me ask you, did you end your relationship with her because you wanted to protect her position here at newman media?

Adam: Absolutely not. I ended things because it wasn’t working out. Never should’ve begun in the first place. I just — I don’t want to see her punished professionally because of our personal relationship.

Victor: Pains me to realize that you go to such great lengths to protect sally spectra, whatever her name is, and yet you’re willing to walk away from your family and from newman. Do you dislike us that much?

Adam: [ Exhales sharply ]

[ Sighs ] Hi, I’m karen.

Adam: There is so much more going on besides hatred. I mean, try devastation. Humiliation. Betrayal. Okay, dad? I thought things had been going quite well for us, and I thought we had finally turned a corner, but, unfortunately, I was wrong about that.

Victor: No, you weren’t wrong about that. I thought things were going very well, and you just would’ve had another place at newman since you were unhappy at newman media. All you had to do is be patient.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] I have been more than patient, dad… but you’ve just been jerking me around this whole time, like I’m your puppet, and I’ve been dancing as fast as I can whenever you pull the strings. So many times I’ve tried to break free, and I have been pulled back and shown once again that I’m a second-class citizen in this family. I’m never good enough to be a real newman. But you know what? Not anymore.

Victor: I’ve had your back for all this time. For you to feel this way, that you don’t belong to this family… …that upsets me.

Adam: Dad.

Victor: You’re my son.

Adam: Why don’t you ever listen? Good god, dad, you and everybody else, you are so used to getting your way. You just assume everybody’s supposed to sit here and take what you dish out, that I’m supposed to bow down to your will? Well, you know what? Some people have limits, and they’re not going to accept defeat and just go quietly into the night. Like ashland locke.

Victor: What the hell does ashland locke have to do with anything?

Adam: [ Sighs ] Because you all are in for a rude awakening.

Sharon: Help me connect the dots here, because I feel like I’m missing something. Obviously, you and allie are in the beginning stages of getting to know each other, and there’s no way of predicting how things will go with you two in the future, but… why are you already questioning whether or not you have a future?

Noah: ‘Cause I’ve never been with anyone like allie before. I’ve never had a relationship start like this. At first, we irritated each other. Then we became friends. It’s just, it’s not my usual thing.

Sharon: Oh, I get it. Since your first girlfriend, you have been attracted to a certain type of woman. Troublemakers, drama queens, women who were dragging around so much baggage that they were destined to break your heart for one reason or another.

Noah: Ah, well, gee, mom, thank you. And when you word it like that, it makes it sound like I sure can pick them.

Sharon: I’m not judging. I mean, look at my history. You were raised by two parents who share a complicated past, so maybe, on some level, a part of you decided that conflict in your relationship is normal, to be expected. But I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. I would love to see you with somebody smart and kind and honest, who really appreciates you for who you are.

Noah: Like what you had with rey?

Sharon: Exactly. I just want you to embrace the idea that a loving, lasting relationship doesn’t have to be contentious or full of conflict. It doesn’t have to be that much hard work. Well, of course you do have to work at it. That’s true.

Noah: I get it, okay?

[ Chuckles ]

Sharon: Good. I hope you do, because it’s really great the way that you and allie get along. And wouldn’t you rather skip over all of the angst stuff this time around?

Noah: You know, I think I just might. A healthy relationship sounds — sounds appealing.

Sharon: Good answer.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Sharon: You know, I don’t want you to overanalyze things or put too much pressure on yourself trying to figure out where you two are headed. Everything’s so new right now. Just enjoy the moments together. That’s what really matters anyway. Does that sound okay with you?

Noah: Yeah, it’s more than okay.

Allie: I’ve been very popular lately.

Ashley: What do you mean?

Allie: Well, the other day, phyllis was asking me all kinds of questions about the family and jack and, well, about everything. And then, of course, diane came for her own fishing expedition. And now here you are, probing me about her.

Ashley: Yeah, I’m curious.

Allie: Look, I get that diane has a lot of enemies in town, and I also totally understand why you feel protective about jack and kyle and why you don’t trust her. But, ashley, I don’t want to be involved.

Ashley: I understand. And I’m sorry if I’ve made you feel uncomfortable, but you have to realize that phyllis and I know how incredibly manipulative diane is. I know that she did a great thing by connecting you with jack. It was wonderful. But she had an ulterior motive. She used you to get to jack to help her reunite with kyle.

Allie: And I am fully aware of that.

Ashley: It worked for her. Do you understand? And I know her. We have not seen the last of diane’s scheming, and I don’t want to see you get used like that again.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Lily: Oh, phyllis, hello.

Phyllis: Hey.

Lily: I’ve actually been waiting for you.

Phyllis: Oh, have you?

Lily: Yes.

Phyllis: Does chancellor-winters need the ballroom for another event?

Lily: No. No, no, no. It’s actually something bigger than that — an offer that I hope you’ll be very interested in. (Kid 1) where’s lucky?

Adam: This whole saga with locke should’ve been over when we paid him off. But victoria, she just felt compelled to take things further. She just had to get the money back as her special way to kiss your ring.

Victor: I don’t understand you. You have a problem with victoria returning the money to her family?

Adam: But she felt the need to rub his face in his loss and humiliation. And if that wasn’t enough, she decided that his cancer deception needed to be outed via the podcast, just completely destroying the guy’s chances of ever doing business again.

Victor: That bastard deserves worse than that after what he has pulled.

Adam: That’s not how you put somebody in their place. That’s how you motivate them to seek retribution, dad. And now you are here, you’re praising victoria’s actions?

Victor: Yeah. Why wouldn’t I? He got what he deserved.

Adam: And you thought that would be the end of it, right? Till he came back to town and you thought you had to make one more move to contain him.

Victor: Right.

Adam: So you put him in his place by having him arrested. You knew he was going to see his son, so you set him up.

Victor: You bet I set him up. I had michael baldwin put out a restraining order that I knew the bastard would cross. Of course, he did.

Adam: Well, now he’s out on bail, and he’s gunning for a fight. Why wouldn’t he be?

Victor: How do you know all this? Were you talking to ashland locke?

Adam: That’s your response after everything I said? Questioning me? You should be thanking me for letting you know. But, hey, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Victor: Do you think I’m even one iota impressed with a potential threat from ashland locke? Give me a break, son. Let that bastard try whatever he wants to. Came to the wrong address. I’m concerned about you, however.

Adam: Me? Oh, I’m the last person you should be worried about, dad.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Son… take some time off, come to your senses, and realize that this is where you belong. This is your family.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I just… I give up with you, dad. There’s no getting through to you. Ever.

Phyllis: What’s your offer?

Lily: Well, as you know, devon sold the gcac a while ago.

Phyllis: Mm, yeah, and right in time, diane jenkins has checked in to the athletic club.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Well, I don’t know her that well, but if devon had waited till after the merger, I would’ve told him to hold off and update the property.

Phyllis: Why is that?

Lily: Well, because I think that chancellor-winters needs an upscale, trendy hotel in this town, you know, one where devon’s artists, our musical artists, their entourage, a place where they can stay.

Phyllis: I love that.

Lily: Yeah.

Phyllis: I really do. I would love to partner with you on that. I mean, if we could come up with something that is, you know, satisfactory to both of us, some agreement that we like. But I would love the grand phoenix to be the exclusive hotel of chancellor-winters for all your vips and rock stars. In fact, you know what? We can come up with a rock-star version to the escape club.

Lily: I’m actually not looking for collaboration.

Phyllis: Okay, then what is this about?

Lily: I want to buy your hotel and make it a chancellor-winters property.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] You want to buy my hotel?

Lily: Look, I know this is a surprise. I know it is, but I’m just asking you to at least consider it.

Phyllis: I mean, you know why I call this the grand phoenix. It was my story. I am the phoenix rising from the ashes. I mean, it was my chance to show the world that I was a legitimate entrepreneur. I mean, it was my slap in the face to all the people here who didn’t think I amounted to anything.

Lily: Yeah, look, phyllis, i get it. I understand. I do. I know this is more than a business for you. I mean, your commitment and drive are what have made this place to be what it is. One that will get a pretty hefty price in a purchase. I mean, that’s legitimacy, too. And think about it. Think what you could do with the money. I mean, the freedom you would have. You could live your life any way that you want. You’ve already done so much with your career, right? You’ve been a webmaster, you’ve run a magazine, you’ve been an executive. I mean, this could be a new chapter in your life.

Phyllis: Well, the grand phoenix is my new chapter.

Lily: Yeah, but, I mean, this is a grind. This is hard work, you know? Wouldn’t you want a simpler life of luxury?

Phyllis: Well, I’m not ready to step away.

Lily: Well, maybe that’s ’cause you’ve never had any other option — until now. This is a proposal, okay, outlining an agreement with what I think is a more-than-generous bid.

Victoria: Who would’ve thought the silver lining to this whole mess would be you and me coming back to work together as a team?

Nick: Look, I know you’ve got big plans for the company, but can we just enjoy this moment right now before we got to jump right back into the fray?

Victoria: Oh. It looks like our break is already over.

Adam: I just came from the office. I was hoping to hear what the ultimate decision was about sally, but I ran into dad, who was no help whatsoever.

Nick: Well, you’ll be happy to know that we’ve decided sally’s going to remain as interim ceo of newman media.

Victoria: Yeah. Much to my surprise, she made an incredible case for herself.

Adam: Well, I’m sure she did because she’s the right person for the job. You guys would’ve regretted cutting her loose.

Nick: But you didn’T.

Adam: Well, as I mentioned earlier, sally and I, we were already having issues, or rather that i was having issues, and I informed her that it was over. Beyond that, it’s really nobody else’s business.

Nick: Seems like a touchy subject.

Adam: It is. So why don’t we just drop it? You don’t need to worry about my personal life. Right now, you should be worrying about the hell that is going to rain down on you. A lot of folks ask me why their dishwasher

Ashley: I realize that you don’t know me very well, but I hope you can feel that my concern for you is genuine.

Allie: Ashley, I’m not questioning that at all.

Ashley: Okay. I’m glad. It’s so important to me that you have your eyes wide open where diane jenkins is concerned. Honestly, as long as her presence is here in this town, she will continue to inflict pain on our family. What is it? What are you thinking? I mean, honestly, express it, please. I promise you, it’s not going to affect our relationship at the lab or here. I promise.

Allie: Okay. Ashley, I just… I just want you to know that even though I may seem innocent or naive, I am anything but, and I won’t let anyone manipulate me. Not diane. Not phyllis. And not you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go get ready for my date with noah.

Noah: Voil. All done. Perfect espressos on demand.

Sharon: Thanks. I owe you one.

Noah: Ah, we’ll call it even. I appreciated the advice. Came at a good time, too. Allie and I are going to the rooftop bar at the athletic club, and [Sighs] I’m just going to live in the moment and enjoy myself. You see how good I listen?

Sharon: Very wise. But do you have a little bit of time before your date?

Noah: Yeah, sure, you need help with something else?

Sharon: No, but I do have another piece of advice for you.

Noah: Okay.

Sharon: Before you meet allie, you need to call your father and talk about new hope. You have to tell him that you don’t want to stay.

Noah: Mom, look, I know, but —

Sharon: It’s just going to keep eating away at you until you do this. And he deserves to know the truth about how you feel. You can’t keep putting it off.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Well, this is a very lucrative [Exhales slowly] Business offer. Wow. Very persuasive.

[ Chuckles ] This place is not about the money for me, so no is your answer.

Lily: Alright, alright. Well, listen, I hear you. I appreciate your feelings. I accept your answer for now, because I know that I sprung this on you out of the blue. But listen, please, just look it over. Think about it. Go through it thoroughly. Alright? Maybe you’ll change your mind.

Jack: Ladies, good to see you both.

Lily: Hello. You, too. I’d love to stay and chat, but i have to run, but catch up soon?

Jack: Yeah, I look forward to it.

Phyllis: [ Clears throat ] Is there more you wanted to talk to me about?

Jack: Please don’t read too much into my showing up. I got a call from the marchetti board asking that we meet here rather than at jabot. I think they want to talk over a meal. Their body clocks are a little thrown off by the time change.

Phyllis: Oh, okay. I —

Jack: So is the private dining room in the restaurant available?

Phyllis: It is. It is. I will double-check, but don’t worry about a thing. I’ll make sure all your guests are comfortable, and, you know… hey, you know what? There is something that I would like to run by you.

Jack: Oh, okay. Go ahead.

Phyllis: It’s lily. She just dropped a bomb on me and offered me this deal. I could use some business advice.

Jack: Okay. I have some time.

Adam: No matter how much you hate locke, having the guy arrested for simply seeing his son in the park is a vicious move.

Victoria: Nick and I had nothing to do with that. Although, it did send a very clear message.

Adam: Oh, he got the message, but apparently nobody decided to think about the consequences now that he’s been released, and he’s even angrier than he was before.

Nick: Well, I’m sure he knows we weren’t involved. Shouldn’t you be warning who was responsible?

Adam: [ Sighs ] I told dad, and he wasn’t fazed. He doesn’t let anything ashland do get under his skin. He doesn’t see the guy as a threat.

Nick: Well, you seem to know a lot about this. I’m assuming you’ve spoken to ashland.

Adam: That’s right.

Nick: When?

Adam: I paid him a visit not too long ago at the gcac, where he’s staying.

Nick: And why would you do that, adam?

Adam: I was hoping to find a man that was fired up about sabotaging newman enterprises. I was hoping that he was concocting some kind of corporate maneuver that would hit dad back. Just wanted to let him know that I would be more than happy to lend a hand.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Of course you were. What makes me wonder right now is why you’re even saying this to us. Not that we believe one word that comes out of your mouth, but, please, go ahead, finish what you were telling us. I’m sure it won’t be a problem later to find out what your true agenda is.

Adam: Well, my agenda came to a screeching halt when I learned he isn’t interested in the company. He’s going in an entirely different direction. I think he’s out for more than just revenge. I think he’s out for blood. For copd,

Nick: What do you mean ashland’s out for blood?

Adam: Look, I don’t know for sure. It’s not like he just came right out and admitted it, but the man has been stripped of everything that has ever mattered to him. He wasn’t ranting, he wasn’t raving or making threats, but he’s pretty messed up. He completely trashed his hotel room.

Victoria: My gosh. Even at his angriest, he’s never done anything like that.

Adam: Yeah, and when he mentioned “victor’s darling daughter,” he had a look in his eye that gave me a chill.

Victoria: Think he’s coming for me?

Adam: Like I said, he wasn’t specific, so I’m not certain what he will do. I just felt like you should know so you can be on guard.

Nick: Well, thank you for telling us, adam. I really appreciate it.

Adam: Yeah. [ Sighs ] Look, I know I am the last person you would trust about anything, and my feelings about you haven’t changed, either, but whatever our issues are, I don’t want to see anybody get hurt.

Phyllis: Chancellor-winters wants to buy the grand phoenix.

Jack: Really? Wow.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm.

Jack: Lily is not messing around here. This is significantly above market value. If you’re willing to entertain this, I don’t think you’re going to get a better offer, but it has to be something that you would want.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] I love running this place. And it’s not just about that. It’s just proving to the whole world that I did something successful. Plus all the memories I have here.

Jack: Yeah, there are some good memories. Some, not so much. I don’t think I can help you with this. This is a highly personal decision only you can make.

Phyllis: Right. Well, if it weren’t for summer, I’d definitely take this offer. But I just don’t feel like i belong in genoa city anymore.

Nick: Yeah, you’ll have that by the end of the day. Alright, bye.

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: You know, I hate to admit it, but adam’s concerns seemed very sincere, so do you think that ashland really has gone off the rails?

Nick: Yeah, my gut tells me adam was being real. I really think you should move to the ranch for the time being.

Victoria: No, nicholas, I am not going to let ashland have that control over me. Besides, I can’t imagine him honestly trying to hurt me.

Nick: You heard adam. It sounds like ashland has gone over the edge.

Victoria: Well, he may be upset, but that doesn’t mean he’s dangerously violent.

Nick: Adam said he destroyed his hotel room. This is something we have to take seriously. Just move to the ranch for a little while so we keep an eye on you.

Victoria: Alright, I’ll think about it. But I refuse to let ashland scare me.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Nick: Sorry. Excuse me. Hey, noah, what’s up?

Noah: Hey, just wanted to see if you were free right now.

Nick: No, but I can be. What’s going on?

Noah: I was hoping we can talk. I’m at crimson lights.

Nick: Yeah, okay. I’m on my way. That was noah. He needs to see me. I’ll drop you at the office.

Victoria: You go ahead. It’s a beautiful day. I think I’m going to take a walk.

Noah: What did we just talk about?

Victoria: Nicholas, you know that dad has a security detail watching me. They’re never that far away. So if something crazy happens, I’ll just call them. I’ll be fine. You don’t have to worry about me, okay? With depression, you just feel…blah.

Ashley: You look gorgeous. I hope you and noah have a great time tonight.

Allie: Thank you, ashley.

Ashley: Where you guys going to go?

Allie: We are going to the gcac rooftop pool bar.

Ashley: Ooh, nice. Definitely the most L.A.-Style nightlife you’re going to find around here, okay?

Allie: Trust me, noah is definitely way more into the nightlife stuff than I will ever be, but it seems like a pretty awesome place.

Ashley: I think it’s awesome that you found somebody you like to spend time with.

Allie: Ashley, please forgive me if I sounded harsh earlier.

Ashley: Please don’t apologize to me. Are you kidding? You were standing up for yourself, and you should. I have nothing but respect for a strong, independent woman. It’s a family trait.

Allie: Good. I’m glad that you weren’t offended.

Ashley: Not at all. You know, there’s going to be so many people with so many opinions in this town, and you being able to hold your own against all of that is going to serve you very well.

Nick: Here I am, as promised. Our boy did not say you were going to be a part of this conversation.

Sharon: That’s because I’m not. This is between the two of you. Can I get you something to drink? Maybe espressos since noah just fixed the espresso machine for me?

Nick: I’m good. Thanks. What’s up?

Nick: Why don’t we take it out to the patio so we can talk in private?

[ Sighs ]

Nick: This is a patio talk?

Noah: Yeah.

Nick: Alright, come on.

Noah: Thanks for coming by so quickly. Why don’t you take a seat?

Nick: Whew! So this is the patio talk, and you want me to sit down? Whatever you’re about to tell me, I’m not going to like, am I?

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Jack: If you’re trying to back me into a corner, it’s not going to work. Keep the hotel. Sell it. Stay in genoa city. Go. It is none of my business.

Phyllis: Okay, so the fact that I love you, that doesn’t matter?

Jack: No, it is everything. That is the problem. I have never stopped loving you. Why do you think it hurts so damn much?

Victoria: That’s right. I think that we can lower the budget by at least 25% if we simplify the building design. No, no, I know, I hate losing the atrium, too, but it doesn’t bring any real value to the project. Nothing worthwhile, anyway. We’ll talk about it tomorrow. Okay. Bye.
