Kevin: Far be it from me to tell you how to do it, but sometimes a car crash is just a car crash, even when it involves the most hated man in Genoa City.

Chance: There’s more to the story. Trust me. And it’s all in the police report. And since I want you to take on a bigger role in this case…

Kevin: I need to be up to speed. Got it.

********************************

Chance: And if something feels off, don’t be satisfied with the simple answer. When I learned that Rey had a heart attack, the whole scenario just made sense. It made sense why he didn’t have the natural reaction to avoid a collision, why he didn’t hit the brakes, why he didn’t try to steer away from oncoming traffic. And that is why I need to know exactly what happened to Ashland Locke yesterday. I want to know what he did every minute leading up to his death. And you’re gonna help me do it.

Kevin: Me? What can I do? I’m not a cop. I can’t interrogate people. And while I’m sure his car has plenty of microchips inside, you really need a mechanic to analyze that data.

Chance: Go see the medical examiner. She takes her coffee with two sugars.

Kevin: But I have nothing to do with it in her office. She doesn’t even technically work for the GCPD.

Chance: Go see her and tell her how much you like that fantasy role-playing game.

Kevin: Oh, she plays that, too?

Chance: That’s what I hear. And that’s why you’re the perfect man for the job.

Kevin: Unless you’re suggesting that Ashland’s death had something to do with the search for a mythical orb, I fail to see the connection.

Chance: You can take this shared interest, and you can butter her up, man. Get friendly. Yeah? I mean, ask her to join your, uh — whatever it is you call a group of people who play that game.

Kevin: A guild.

Chance: Yes. Yes. Guild. And then once you two are guild buddies — yeah? — You make sure she knows that that autopsy is our top priority.

Kevin: [Sighs] Alright. I guess that’s simple enough.

Chance: And you make sure you know that police report by heart, man. I’m gonna need you up to speed if we’re gonna figure this out.

Kevin: “We.” Sure. I mean, yes. And I will report right back to you because that is what a good sidekick does. We’re kind of a team now, right? You’re boots on the ground. I’m your guy behind the desk, eyes on everything, plugged in to the mainframe. Yes! Maybe not. But I will see what I can do about speeding up that autopsy, and, uh, I’ll be in touch.

Billy: Well, I guess there is some poetic justice, the fact that Ashland Locke left this earth in the same way that his big persona was born — in a car crash.

[ Sighs ] I’m just glad that he is not on this earth anymore and he is out of your life for good.

Victoria: You know they say you’re not supposed to speak ill of the dead, right?

Billy: Yeah, well, I’m gonna make an exception this time because I know what he put you through. The way that you handled yourself… I am just in awe of you. Your fortitude. Your stubbornness. And, of course, your grace.

Victoria: [Breathes deeply] I told you to go to L.A. And not worry about me, but you didn’t listen.

Billy: Yeah, well, there’s nothing you can say to stop me from looking out for you.

********************************

Nick: Sorry if it seemed like I was brushing you off.

Billy: It’s alright. I’m just glad that you’re both okay and that you are now Locke-free and this whole nightmare is over.

Nick: Yeah. Um, I need to talk to you about that real estate deal.

Victoria: Oh. Business Nick. He’s unstoppable.

Billy: Yeah. Look at him.

Victoria: Yeah.

Billy: I’ll let you two get to it. Thank you again. Glad you’re okay.

Victoria: Thanks for stopping by.

Chelsea: Billy, hey, got a second?

Billy: Yeah. What’s going on?

Chelsea: I thought we could go over some podcast ideas.

Billy: Sure. I’m actually just going over notes for the next episode.

Chelsea: Oh, I thought you were doing some corporate stuff. You look all business-y and official sitting behind the ceo desk.

Billy: It’s funny you should say that. Lily is actually still in los angeles, so I’m using her desk. But you did pick up on it because I am feeling like a little bit of a suit back here.

Chelsea: Mm. You have a different energy in this room. Different posture, even.

Billy: You know me. I have to wear a lot of hats. You know, I’ve got my corporate chapeau, I’ve got my hipster hosting beanie, and, of course, my favorite, the dunce cap.

Chelsea: Ah, right, so when i saw you at the soccer field the other day, what kind of hat were you wearing then?

Billy: That would be my number-one-dad truck hat, of course.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] Um… so when are we going to get the boys together for the playdate?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah, it’s just not a good time right now. Both of our kids just got back from camp, as well.

Chelsea: When would it be a good time?

Billy: I will talk to johnny’s his mother and check in with her and see what she thinks.

Chelsea: Okay. When can you ask her?

Billy: Well, she’s got a lot going on right now. When she has the bandwidth to have this conversation, I’ll have it with her.

Chelsea: Billy, it’s a play date. It’s going to take you two seconds to ask her.

Billy: Chelsea, it’s a little more complicated than that.

Chelsea: Why? The boys know each other.

Billy: Yeah, and they haven’t hung out together for a while.

Chelsea: So what? They get along great.

Billy: Okay, I don’t know if I’m missing something here, but it feels like you’re being a little pushy, and I’m not sure why the urgency.

Chelsea: Billy, you are never going to change your stance towards me when it comes to johnny, are you?

Elena: I just think it’s weird it’s taking so long.

Nate: To get the check?

[ Chuckles ] Just finish your quiche. Give them a minute.

Elena: I’m not talking about the check. I’m still talking about my contract at newman.

Nate: I know you’re frustrated about that, but that takes time, too. Imani’s working on it.

Elena: I’m not frustrated. I’m just saying it’s taking forever.

Nate: You know what? I bet we can take care of that right now. Sally, excuse me, do you have a minute?

Sally: Yep. Doctor. Doctor turned coo. What’s going on?

Elena: Well, I mean, there’s something we’d like to discuss with you.

Sally: Sounds serious. What’s up?

Nate: We’d like to negotiate elena’s departure from askmdnow. I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reschedule the meeting, but the heads of our legal team at chancellor-winters have been dealing with a family emergency.

Sally: Really sorry to hear that, but I’m just a little bit confused. You said reschedule, only I don’t remember a meeting being set.

Nate: The dinner imani arranged to sit down and settle this matter.

Elena: Yeah, nate was told you had to postpone.

Sally: Doesn’t ring a bell.

Nate: It was going to be you, imani, and me, but you had something come up at the last minute.

Sally: No, I don’t remember that.

Nate: Hm.

Summer: Why are you being so mysterious?

Kyle: I’m not. I’m an open book.

Summer: Mm, no. You’re hinting at something, and you’re deliberately not telling me what it is. You’re like one of those diaries I had when I was a kid with little lock on it.

Kyle: And we all know how impenetrable those locks are, so you’re never getting the info you want out of me.

Summer: Just tell me. I’m sure it has something to do with my mom and diane both working at marchetti. What happened? Did they get into a brawl before my mom’s even had her first day at the office?

Kyle: Not that I know of, but I have a great idea for marchetti.

Summer: I like the sound of that.

Kyle: Best of all, it has nothing to do with our mothers’ feud, and it can actually help people I care about.

Mariah: Alright, honey. Tea with lemon. Not too hot. You know, there’s an infinite number of things that I don’t understand about this universe, but I know how to prepare your tea. I’ve got that down cold.

[ Chuckles ] You know, it’s a beautiful day. You know, maybe we could make some sandwiches, do a picnic by the lake.

Voice app: You are being so sweet. Thanks. But I don’t want you to ignoble.

Mariah: Ignoble? I don’t know what that means.

Voice app: Ignore.

Mariah: Right, but what does ignoble mean?

Voice app: Ignore.

Mariah: I understand. What am I not supposed to ignore? “Go to work.” Well, I’ve got everything taken care of a jabot, you know, and right here is where I need to be. If I go to work, who’s going to entertain you, spend time with you, make your tea? There are times, I wonder…

Mariah: All caps. It’s practically like you’re shouting.

[ Chuckles ] So you’re sure everything’s fine? Okay? It’s perfect? Nothing could be better? Okay, sure. I believe that. You know, canceling all those concerts wasn’t frustrating at all. You know, not being able to sing the songs to your adoring fans. And the best part is you get to listen to me all day and never be able to respond.

Voice app: This is my dream. Having you dote on me is all I ever wanted.

Mariah: A dream? That’s what this is?

[ Sighs ] Babe, the connection we have, it’s no joke. You know, it’s like a sixth sense. A seventh sense. [ Chuckles ] We can practically feel what the other is going through, right? Like, for example, when I was abducted by that maniac stitch and he locked me in that little room when I was pregnant, you could tell that I was scared and in danger, right? So it’s pretty pointless trying to keep things from me because everything that you’re going through, I feel it, you know, like it’s happening to me. And speaking from experience, keeping things in, that’s not the way to go. It just grows, and it gives it power. Don’t do that. Whatever you’re feeling, I want to help you carry it.

Kyle: So, I was talking to mariah about tessa’s predicament.

Summer: Yeah, she can’t speak or sing since the surgery.

Kyle: She’s going to need extensive voice therapy to recover, so her career is on hold for the foreseeable future.

Summer: She must be so scared.

Kyle: Well, I’m sure she is, but it’s tessa, so she’ll tough it out and never let us know how frightened she is.

Summer: That’s how I would be, too.

Kyle: [ Chuckling ] No, you wouldn’T. Like, I love you, but you’re not the tough, stoic type.

Summer: I’m going to prove you wrong about that someday. What was this great idea?

Kyle: Mariah was looking for something else for tessa to focus on. She pitched an idea that would direct tessa’s energy into something productive and give marchetti a new face for the new line.

Summer: You’re talking about hiring tessa as a model.

Kyle: For the print campaign. Her fan base is growing. It’s the exact demographic we’re looking for. Tessa has the look I think we want, and best of all, she loves our product.

Summer: Hm. I mean, I love that photo of her on her new album. I mean, it’s stunning.

Kyle: The camera loves her.

Summer: I like the idea. I’m not thrilled that mariah is the one that brought it to you. That means that she’s going to be involved, which always turns into a whole thing.

Kyle: She will be on her best behavior.

Summer: That’s what we’ve been saying about our mothers, and they’re going to require a lot of managing. I don’t want me and mariah to be another source of potential conflict.

Kyle: Hey, mariah is genuinely happy for us and you’re happy for her and tessa.

Summer: We’ve reached sort of a peaceful coexistence, but that’s only because of your friendship.

Kyle: Maybe, but she’s changed, like when she gives you a hard time now, it doesn’t really have any animosity to it. Like, I mean, like, at the winning. She was legitimately happy you were there.

Summer: Babe, she called me “snowflake” for years.

Kyle: It was in fun — mostly. But, look, mariah has her hands full at jabot, so she won’t have time to play show-biz wife to tessa. Look past all the mariah stuff. Won’t it be awesome for tessa to be the face of marchetti?

Billy: No, I am not trying to prevent you from seeing johnny. It is a tricky time.

Chelsea: Right. Back from camp, you said.

Billy: Well, it’s not only that. My kids had a relationship with ashland locke. And now they are dealing with his death.

Chelsea: All the more reason johnny should go out and kick a soccer ball around with connor for a few minutes.

Billy: It’s not the right time. Can we please move on from this?

Chelsea: No, actually. No. You know, a few weeks ago, I would have accepted your response. I wanted to make everybody else happy, not create any waves. I was just feeling grateful that people were putting up with me. But now it’s about what’s best for me. Now it’s about what I want.

Billy: Wait a second now, okay, ’cause I am on your side. I mean, I brought you in on this podcast to be a partner.

Chelsea: I know, because you knew I could make it better.

Billy: Well, that is true, and it’s working because we are open and honest with each other. We are in sync in that way.

Chelsea: Well, except when it comes to johnny.

Billy: See, I disagree. I think we’re in sync there, too, because victoria and I have raised johnny exactly the way that you wanted him to be raised.

Chelsea: Billy, he is my biological son, and I don’t even get to see him or spend any time with him.

Billy: That was your choice, chelsea. This agreement that we have has worked for many, many years up until very recently. So you tell me, is something else going on? This isn’t charmin! No wonder I don’t feel as clean.

Sally: No, nothing. I didn’t have a business dinner scheduled all week. And you said imani arranged it for the three of us?

Nate: That’s right.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I mean, it was a hectic time at newman. Victoria had just come back, adam left newman media, but if it was in the books, it would’ve been here.

Nate: Okay, well, I guess there was some conflict with scheduling. Regardless, we’re here now, and we’d like to talk about the issue at hand.

Elena: But, first, we’d like to congratulate you on officially taking over at newman media.

Sally: Thank you, elena.

Elena: Yeah, I mean, it’s a huge job, but I’m sure you’ll crush it.

Nate: Yeah, I know something about taking a hard left in your career path. It’s tough but rewarding.

Sally: Yes, it is.

Nate: Well, elena would also like to make a move in her career. She wants to join us over at chancellor-winters, but to do that, she needs to be released from her current contract with newman media.

Sally: I see.

Elena: And I really appreciate and I’m grateful for my time at newman media. It was a really great experience.

Sally: And it shows. I mean, I think that’s why you’re such a great host at askmdnow. The audience can tell that you love what you’re doing. Visits to the site are up almost 20%. Average visit duration is up, bounce rate is down. Those are trends that advertisers pay for. So I can see why chancellor-winters would want to poach you.

Nate: It’s not a poaching situation.

Sally: Isn’t it? ‘Cause you’re trying to lure talent we have signed under contract. I’m not sure why I would let that happen.

Chelsea: What’s changed? A lot. Since I recovered from what my mother likes to refer to as “a huge emotional breakdown,” I have a different outlook on life. I’m a work in progress.

Billy: Welcome to the club.

Chelsea: I’ve always been an outsider here. Everyone’s always looked at me and viewed me with suspicion. And I can’t say I blame them because of my past and my history and the way I showed up to town. To be honest with you, it didn’t used to even bother me. I reveled in it.

Billy: You don’t feel the same anymore?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] When I hit rock bottom poisoning rey, I lost myself. I really did. I lost any sense of self-worth. I mean, even when I came home, I practically begged adam to take me back. What was I thinking?

Billy: Well, right now, I’m thinking that you’re glad that he didn’t take you up on the offer and that he is not in your life.

Chelsea: Listen, it’s hard to get some people out of our system, kind of like you and victoria.

[ Sighs ] The truth is, when I was in that really dark place, rey was the only one who reached out to me. He was so kind. When he died, I just felt like the rug got ripped out from under me. So I held on to things that made me feel safe and comfortable, you know, like my partnership with chloe and my design work.

Billy: Yeah, even I could see you were struggling.

Chelsea: I don’t think people realize what a big step it was for me to walk away from design, fashion. It’s all I knew I was good at. It was a huge part of my identity, but it didn’t make me happy. I had conditioned myself to believe that that’s as good as it’s going to get, but that something amazing happened. I realized I deserve more. I deserve to be happy.

Billy: Of course you do.

Chelsea: Working with you has been a big part of that epiphany. I realize I have a different skill set. Not just design, not just, you know, running cons.

Billy: Yeah, I think we’re all glad that you’re not in that line of work anymore.

Chelsea: Stepping into a new field where I had zero experience, zero training, and miraculously not sucking at it was a huge confidence booster. You know, I’d been so isolated for so long, and suddenly there are these people on the internet commenting that they are connecting with what I had to say.

Billy: No, I know the feeling. It’s kind of interesting. You think all those weird, quirky things that make you unlikable are actually things that make you relatable.

Chelsea: Yeah. So it’s made me realize I want to be open to letting other people into my life. And I think johnny’s a big part of that.

Billy: I’m not sure why you think that way.

Chelsea: Johnny already knows that victoria is not his biological mother. Would it really be so terrible if he learned that I am?

Billy: [ Clears throat ] We have an agreement, chelsea.

Chelsea: I know, billy. I know we have an agreement, but that was a long time ago. And I was in an entirely different place. I was a different person. You and victoria have given him everything. You’ve done an incredible job, but I’m not the same person i was when I signed that agreement years ago.

Billy: I understand that, but that does not negate the agreement that we signed.

Chelsea: Don’t you agree with me that kids deserve to know the true information about their birth? No secrets, no shame. You can’t deny johnny and connor are connected. Don’t they deserve to get to know each other? To have a bond? It would mean so much to them as they grow up.

Billy: I promise you, I will have the conversation with victoria.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Thank you.

Billy: I will let you know how it goes.

Chelsea: Wow, okay. Well, thank you. Now that that conversation is behind us, I guess we can focus on podcast ideas.

Billy: Yes, I would like to do that.

Chelsea: But?

Billy: But right now I’ve got an empty stomach, and I do not like to work on an empty stomach. So can we please get out of here? Lunch is on me.

Voice app: You’re right. It’s making me crazy. I can’t do what I love.

Mariah: And you’re positive that a picnic by the lake wouldn’t help? What if we brought pie? I’m sorry. Okay, I’m trying. I really am. But sometimes I feel like, I don’t know, I’m making it worse or I’m getting in the way.

Voice app: You are not the problem. You are wonderful.

Mariah: Oh, I know.

[ Chuckles ] But it’s very strange hearing that from a robotic voice. Nice, though. Very, very nice to hear it out loud. You know what we should do? I think that we should find something different for you to do during this time. You know, channel all of that creative energy into something, right?

Kyle: Hey, you two.

Mariah: Hey.

Kyle: Just who we were looking for.

Mariah: Oh, well, if you’re wondering why I’m not at jabot, it’s a funny story.

Summer: Save it. We actually don’t care why you’re not at jabot. And when he said you’re just who we’re looking for, he wasn’t talking about you.

Kyle: We want to talk to tessa.

I’m a ganiac, ganiac,

check my drawers.

Sally: The hard work that elena is putting into the site is just now starting to pay off.

Elena: Yes, but I think there are plenty of other doctors who would do just as good of a job as I have, and it would be easier for them because they’ve already built the foundation.

Sally: But we don’t have a list of replacements.

Elena: Actually, you do. I’ve compiled a list of 12 names of doctors who I think could start right away.

Sally: Is there a reason that you want to leave? Are you unhappy with us?

Elena: No, not at all. Like I said before, I really enjoyed my time at newman media.

Nate: But as the guy who was the original face of askmdnow, I was impressed with how elena stepped into that format seamlessly. She built on what we had created, and I am confident that any of the people on her list can do the same. The audience will continue to follow.

Sally: But we don’t know that for sure. Audiences don’t like change. Even when you left, nate, there was a drop-off. And when you’re on that screen, elena, you are not just a doctor. You’re talent. You have an intangible quality that not everyone has.

Nate: Well, I just made it tangible. I’ve written down a figure. It’s a financial incentive to release elena from her contract.

Sally: I will be sad to see you go, but best of luck.

Elena: Really? That’s — that’s it?

Sally: Yeah, I will have the papers drawn up today.

Nate: We already have the agreement written up. We can fill in the numbers and send it over to you.

Sally: Even better.

Elena: Thank you so much, sally.

Nate: It was a pleasure doing business with you.

Sally: You, too. And I really hope this move works out for you, elena. You’re a real talent.

Nate: We’ll be in touch soon.

Elena: Thanks.

Kyle: Tessa, we were wondering if you’re up for a new challenge.

Mariah: Oh, my gosh. We were just talking about that. You know, something to pour her incredible energy into, like baking or sculpting, juggling.

Summer: Or maybe something completely different.

Kyle: Would you be interested in being the new face for marchetti?

Mariah: What? That’s amazing.

Kyle: Yeah, we came up with the idea while we were brainstorming our new print campaign. You know, who would we want to represent the company now it’s a part of jabot?

Summer: And you’ve got a fresh look — elegant, sophisticated, fun. I mean, that is our brand.

Mariah: I agree. She would be perfect.

Kyle: And we loved the photo on your album and said that’s the exact look we’re going for, and we were like, “we should get someone like tessa.”

Summer: Then we were like, “why don’t we just get the original, tessa herself?”

Mariah: I am stunned. I can’t believe this. What do you think, babe?

Voice app: I’m speechless.

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: Okay, I see what you did there.

Voice app: I’m really flattered, but it’s a reminder of what I might be losing.

Nate: I thought you’d be more excited about being released from your contract.

Elena: I’m happy.

Nate: Are you sure?

Elena: I mean, I’m not dancing in the streets, but, yeah, I’m pleased.

Nate: Good, because we did it. We got what we wanted. And I did not think sally was going to let you go, but she saw all those zeroes in my offer and waved goodbye.

Elena: Yeah, good job. You read the situation perfectly. At least with sally.

Nate: What do you mean? What did I miss?

Elena: I think it’s crazy that I even have to explain this to you. You remember all the confusion about the first meeting that imani set up between you, her, and sally?

Nate: What are you getting at?

Elena: The reason sally couldn’t remember canceling the meeting is because she was never invited in the first place. So that dinner between the three of you was really supposed to be an intimate night with just you and imani. She set it all up. I’m steve.

“The young and the restless”

will continue. Need a cleanser that does more?

Billy: You good with couch?

Chelsea: Yeah, yeah. Just give me one second.

Billy: Alright.

Chelsea: Sally, hi.

Sally: Chelsea.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] How are you? I’ve been worried. I’m sure it’s sinking in the way adam just dumped you like that, you poor thing.

Sally: I don’t want or need your sympathy.

Chelsea: You know, I really admire the way you’ve been handling this breakup. You’re so brave. Sitting here in public, probably wondering if everybody’s out there whispering about you.

Sally: Did you handle it well whenever adam broke up with you?

Chelsea: You seem a lot better than the last time I saw you, and you went chasing after adam. Eugh, not particularly dignified. I felt so bad for you.

Sally: Well, if anyone can empathize with adam breaking up with me, it’s you. How many times did it take for you to realize that he wasn’t the one? Five, six? It’s such a shame ’cause you guys have a kid, and you still couldn’t make it work.

Chelsea: Well, if you’ll excuse me, someone’s waiting for me. Have a great day.

Billy: Hey. Is everything okay?

Chelsea: Everything’s perfect.

Mariah: Tessa, you would not be losing anything. You know, losing your ability to sing, that’s temporary. Frustrating as hell but temporary. You’ll come back.

Kyle: You will.

Summer: Better than ever.

Mariah: And in the meantime, seems like kyle and summer want you to be a part of their new adventure. You love marchetti. You would be draped in their clothing. So glamorous. You’d be the face that launched 1,000 pair of high-end shoes.

[ Chuckles ]

Kyle: Better be a whole lot more than that.

Summer: Tessa, this might be a perfect time for you to try branching out while you recuperate. You wouldn’t have to use your voice at all, and you could really focus on healing.

Mariah: Yeah, and your face plastered all over billboards, magazines — that’s good for the tessa porter brand. You would expand your fan base for when you get back to performing.

Kyle: And when things are back to normal, you can have your music career and continue to model for us.

Mariah: Best of both worlds.

Nate: I can’t believe your mind went there. What?

Elena: Tell me, did you speak to sally or her assistant before the meeting?

Nate: No.

Elena: Exactly. Imani arranged the whole thing. She told you that everything was set, and then she told you that it got canceled last second. And you bought it.

Nate: I had no reason not to. Meetings get canceled or postponed all the time. Things come up. It happens. Look, just because imani’s involved doesn’t mean there’s some secret plot. Come on, elena. You really have it in for her, and it is clouding your mind.

Elena: No, nate. I have a very clear picture of the situation.

Nate: I cannot believe we’re having this conversation.

Elena: Neither can I. And I can’t help but wonder if the reason you’re not seeing what she’s up to is because you don’t want to. Girls trip.

Chelsea: I love the personal episodes, but I think it would be really fun if we dug our teeth into something meatier.

Billy: What do you mean by that?

Chelsea: Like true crime. You know, we found an unsolved mystery and just started digging?

Billy: Yeah, no, I like that. You got anything in mind?

Chelsea: No, not yet. But I can do some research. You know, you can find something that affects an entire town, a whole family.

Billy: Mm-hmm. That’s good, right? Find the skeletons in the closet.

Chelsea: Skeletons are always good.

Billy: Always good.

Chelsea: Look how “the grinning soul” hit a gold mine when he started discovering ashland locke’s secrets.

Billy: Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, he found the right target. Ashland locke is the gift that keeps on giving. I got to hand it to the guy. I really respect him, and I really like that podcast.

Chelsea: Yeah, I’m sure “the grinning soul” respects you, too.

Billy: I hope so. I have to say one thing, though. He’s definitely impressed that I brought you on board.

Chelsea: Ah, well, I have another idea. You know, we can find somebody that got a terrible rumor spread about them online, the damaged it caused, how they survived.

Billy: Understand why they started it and who started it. That’s good, too.

Chelsea: Exactly. Exactly. You know, I keep thinking about the scams anita and I pulled. There’s a lot of material there. Maybe an entire series.

[ Both chuckle ]

Billy: Scamming, scheming.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Billy: All that. I think our audience is going to eat that up.

Chelsea: Yeah.

Billy: And, of course, coming from us, there’s a lot of backstory there. A lot to unpack, isn’t there?

Chelsea: Mm. You know, you have an entirely different energy when you talk about this stuff. It looks good on you.

Billy: Well, thank you. I appreciate that. To be honest, I love it. I love sitting here finding a topic and riffing off it and, you know, observing people and the planet and seeing how it all mix together. And right now, it’s very nice to be out of the corporate arena.

Chelsea: Why do you keep going back to the corporate world, then?

Nate: I’m not trying to avoid seeing anything.

Elena: That’s disingenuous. You’re acting like I’m out of line for even suggesting that imani is capable of engineering a dinner between the two of you.

Nate: Are you accusing me of being attracted to her?

Elena: No, I’m not saying that it’s sexual. But the way that she’s always fawning over you, that’s got to be a pretty big ego boost. Not to mention, you just told me that she’s been fueling all your frustrations with your situation with devon. Maybe she’s even pushing you to be a little more aggressive?

Nate: I don’t need my ego boosted. And as for imani, she’s noticed there is a family dynamic at play, that devon sometimes tries to hold me back. The same thing happens between her and amanda, and it is refreshing to have someone to talk to while I’m at work who supports me.

Elena: Oh, as opposed to your girlfriend who couldn’t comprehend? What, because I’m not an executive?

Nate: I didn’t say that. You have been incredibly supportive. This has been a big change from medicine to the corporate world, and you have been there for me every step of the way.

Elena: And yet you still don’t think I really understand what’s going on — at least, not in the way that imani does.

[ Scoffs ]

Voice app: Thank you for this life-changing offer. Sorry for my pity party.

Mariah: Hey, you have nothing to apologize for.

Kyle: Absolutely. We know you’re dealing with a lot.

Summer: We don’t want to pressure you. We’re just excited about the possibility. Don’t let our enthusiasm scare you off.

Voice app: Exciting opportunity. Might be perfect, especially now.

Mariah: Yeah. And you get to do something fun while you heal.

Kyle: I think it’d be perfect for you.

Summer: Definitely.

Mariah: So we all think that you would be an amazing model.

Summer: Look at that, mariah and i agreeing on something.

[ Both chuckle ]

Kyle: Well, let us know what you decide.

Summer: Alright, reach out if you have any questions.

Kyle: Keep us updated.

Mariah: Bye, guys. How about that? That is so exciting. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this.

Voice app: Stop pretending. This was all you, wasn’t it? Your heart is at the heart of everything you do.

Voice app: I saw you and kyle conspiring yesterday. It was your idea, wasn’t it?

Mariah: No. No, this was — this was all kyle. I mean, you saw how excited he was. Okay. Okay. I know. We can’t lie to each other. It’s not good. So… maybe this was my idea. Okay? You know, maybe I thought I found the perfect thing for you to do while you recuperate. And maybe, selfishly, I want to see my beautiful wife’s face on billboards and in magazines. Is that really so bad?

Voice app: I should be mad, but I’m too much in love.

Mariah: [ Breathes deeply ]

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: I’ve known you a long time, billy, and I have seen this scenario play out time and time again with your family. You think you need to live up to expectations. You think you need to act a certain way, and then you do for a while until you can’t take it anymore and then the real billy comes out.

Billy: I haven’t exactly been a model abbott.

Chelsea: Well, maybe not, but you do look really good in a suit.

Billy: Thank you. Appreciate that.

Chelsea: The problem with these expectations is you don’t fit into a little abbott box, and then you rebel.

Billy: Let me ask you a question. How much is your hourly rate for this kind of analysis?

Chelsea: Just a little friendly observation.

Billy: Is that right? Just a friendly observation? Okay, well, look, I am in a really good place right now. I know that you have seen me fall back into that cycle in the past, but I believe that I am past the need to rebel.

Chelsea: Really? So you feel fulfilled being a part of chancellor-winters?

Billy: Well, yeah, I mean, I, uh… it’s a little difficult to answer that honestly.

Chelsea: That means the answer is no.

Nate: You want me to be honest?

Elena: Always.

Nate: I honestly feel like you take devon’s side whenever we talk about those dynamics.

Elena: [ Scoffs ]

Nate: “He has more business experience.”

Elena: That is the truth. Why would that offend you?

Nate: It feels dismissive.

Elena: It takes experience to make the right decision. Just like you can’t walk into an operating room and get it right the first time out. Why would it be any different with business?

Nate: I have a business education. I have run an entire hospital department. I know how to navigate those complicated relationships — when to compromise, when to stay strong.

Nate: So then what you’re actually saying is that I’m just not supporting you enough. Or not in the way that imani is. Look, I don’t know what this girl’s motives are, but she is trying to be your champion.

Nate: You’re blowing this all out of proportion.

Elena: No, I am not. I think you are consciously or unconsciously refusing to see what is right in front of your face. And I respect you so much that I am trying to tell you the truth, but you keep pushing me back. I think you just like the story that imani is telling better, the one where you’re misunderstood and underappreciated. She is telling you everything you want to hear. A beautiful woman stroking your ego. And what could be more enticing than that?

Next week on “the young and the restless.”

Kevin: I’ve got something new to show you. It’s a game changer.

Devon: Yes, my rules. Who else, nate? Who do you work for? You’re my coo. How do you not understand that?

Nate: Getting all worked up. What are you going to do, punch me again?

Nikki: I told her about diane’s resurrection.

Talia: And I became very interested. I sensed that would be a fabulous story for my magazine.

Kyle: Hello newlyweds. Thanks for inviting me to hang. Tessa, I heard your recovery was going smoothly, but I’m glad to see it for myself. You look great.

Voice app: Thanks, but i can’t wait to stop sounding like GPS directions.

[Both laugh]

Mariah: Tessa is still resting her voice, but I’m not going to lie. I think I’m kind of starting to like it. I mean, the computer automated voice, it’s kind of sounding a little sexy to me, if you know what I mean.

Kyle: Glad to see you’re keeping your sense of humor.

*******************************

Billy: I realize that, but you can only suppress your feelings for so long, and the longer you do

[Imitates explosion] The bigger the combustion.

Phyllis: You know, I’m actually offended by this characterization of my personality. Yeah, why is it that you get to turn your life around, you get to be an upstanding executive, but me, I can’t do that?

Billy: Because I actually like my colleagues. I trust them and admire them.

Phyllis: Okay, well, it’s unfortunate for you that all you’re working with are, you know, your buddies and your girlfriend. I’m going to handle Diane very professionally.

Billy: And I’m going to enjoy the popcorn watching you do that.

Adam: What’s the rush, Kevin? Got some hardcore hacking to do?

Kevin: Wouldn’t you like to know. I work for the good. So, if you’re looking for someone to blackmail into being your minion, look elsewhere. This guy’s on the right side of the law.

Adam: Yeah, well, at least for now. Old habits, you know, and all that.

Kevin: It’s funny. Now that I’m out of your orbit, everything is right in my world. Great job, great relationship, great family.

Adam: That sounds nice. I’m very happy for you.

Kevin: From what I hear, you’re striking out on all three of those fronts these days.

Adam: Gloating is not a good look on you, Kevin.

Kevin: I think I’ve earned it. You put me through hell.

Adam: Come on. You were hardly an innocent victim.

Kevin: The difference between the two of us is that I have done my best to change. You just wallow in your bad habits.

Adam: What would you know about it?

Kevin: Uh, hello? Chloe? The love of my life?

Adam: No accounting for taste, but I guess there really is a lid for every pot, huh?

Kevin: [Chuckles] Yeah. My point is that Chloe works for Sally now. Not that she’s a gossip, but she has shared some things your ex has said about you. Whew!

Adam: Like what?

Kevin: Well, I wish I could stay and chat longer, but I’m assuming you heard Ashland Locke turned up dead, so I’m a little busy.

**********************************

Jack: Going out?

Ashley: As a matter of fact, I am. Why? Are you keeping tabs on me like you used to when we were kids?

Jack: We’ve got kids who have kids. No, I don’t think so. I’m actually quietly reading over the lab report you asked me to look at.

Ashley: Well, you know what? I should be back at a pretty decent hour, so we can go over it when I get home.

Jack: Great.

Ashley: Or maybe I should just stay here and keep tabs on you. What are you doing here — again

Chloe: Blech.

Sally: What’s wrong?

Chloe: All of these people.

Sally: What people are you talking about? Hopefully no one whose name is on the building because they sign our checks.

Chloe: You know, as a rule, I am generally irritated by most of the Newmans, but in this moment, I am specifically irritated by all of these national media parasites who just want to get the scoop on Ashland Locke’s death. Vultures.

Sally: Chloe, you do realize that we’re a part of the national media, right? So, are you calling us vultures?

Chloe: No, no. I’m talking about all of the reporters who have come into town, who are trying to uncover some angle that no one else has found.

Sally: They’re not evil. They’re just trafficking in the most valuable commodity of the day — information. All of their platforms are covering Ashland’s death, and they need to find an angle.

Chloe: Well, I doubt they’re gonna find out that Nick punched Ashland at Victoria’s house the night that Locke died.

Sally: What did you just say? Their confrontation got physical?

*********************************

Chloe: It’s true. Nick clocked Ashland the night he died. Probably not long before the accident.

Sally: And this was at Victoria’s house?

Chloe: Exactly.

Sally: What was Ashland doing there?

Chloe: I don’t really know. I just know that it got really heated between Ashland and Victoria, so Nick had to step in.

Sally: Wow. And you found this out from your trusted source that rhymes with “fleven.”

Chloe: You know there are actual words that rhyme with his name. You don’t have to make up something.

Sally: Yeah, but it’s more fun to say fleven. So, what else did kevin tell you?

Chance: If you’re hoping that I’m gonna drop this investigation, that’s not gonna happen. It is my duty to find the facts in this case, and I take that very seriously.

Victor: I know you do. And I admire that. You have a highly developed sense of duty. Probably got that from the military. But as far as I’m concerned, all that effort would be better spent elsewhere.

Chance: I doubt Ashland would see it that way.

Victor: Who the hell gives a damn how Ashland would see it? He’s dead, Chance, dead as a doornail! He was a pathological liar. He was a fraud. And I have a feeling he began to realize that. That’s why he drove his damn car into a ravine.

Chance: Okay, so you’re still pushing the whole suicide —

Victor: That’s the only logical explanation.

Chance: Only if the facts would back it up, but that’s not the case. Victor, I cannot overlook the reality that you have covered up a fatal accident in the past involving one of your children.

Victor: Now, wait a minute, man. You’re talking about Adam. This is something that happened decades ago. Let me tell you something about your profession. The more information you have about a case, the more it often obscures the truth.

********************************”***

Chloe: I have to laugh that this is the same woman who was just doubting herself a minute ago.

Sally: Well, your pep talk helped. It was exactly what I needed to hear when I needed to hear it. The two of us are going to kick butt running this company.

Chloe: Damn right we are.

Sally: You know, in fashion, I always wanted to influence what people wore, but this is gonna be so much bigger. I mean, folks are gonna turn to Newman Media to figure out who to listen to, what to talk about, and what to care about. It’s awesome, how much power and influence we can wield.

Chloe: Yes, yes, yes. Now, that is the Sally Spectra I know.

Devon: Thanks, man. And get two of these.

Amanda: Wow. You must be really hungry. You’re ordering the entire menu.

Devon: Well, most of it is for you.

Amanda: For me?

Devon: Yes, because I noticed while you were helping your mother get situated in Virginia that you weren’t really taking care of yourself.

Amanda: I know. I know. I just — I — I needed to make sure that Naya had everything she needed, you know?

Devon: I know you did, and now that we’re back home, I can spoil you and get you all your favorite things and all your favorite foods. All the curly fries you can eat.

Amanda: [ Gasps ] Well, I have to admit that the surest and fastest way to my heart is curly fries.

Devon: Is it?

Amanda: Yes.

Devon: Oh, good.

[Both laugh] Well, I’ll joking aside, I hope that you know that you can tell me if there’s anything else you need me to do — ’cause I can tell that something is still weighing on you. You barely said two words on the flight back home.

****************************

Mariah: And the doctor said the procedure couldn’t have gone better. The only unfortunate thing is Tessa has to be on complete vocal rest for the next few days — so, no talking, no — no laughing or coughing or clearing your throat. And the hardest part, no singing or humming. I know. I’m sorry, my little songbird. But that’s kind of the best part in all of this, is I get to say sappy things to Tessa and she can’t groan. So, it’s kind of a win-win.

Sharon: Well, I plan on keeping you fully stocked with plenty of smoothies and decaffeinated teas while you recover. And maybe the best thing that Mariah can do for you is to stop cracking so many jokes. Tessa’s not supposed to be laughing, either.

Mariah: Uh…yeah. Wait, what are you trying to say?

Faith: Uh, that we don’t have to worry. Your jokes — not so funny.

Mariah: Wow. Okay, fine.

Faith: Oh! I have the best gift for this situation. You can use this instead of talking. What?

Thank you. I love it.

[Laughter]

Faith: I get it. Obviously, Tessa could have just used her phone, but with the whiteboard, she can be more expressive — pictures, emojis. It’s like carrying around her own thought bubble.

Mariah: That’s a very good point. You know, we can also play hangman or ticktacktoe, draw charades. Very good gift. Thank you.

Sharon: Okay, come on. It’s me you’re talking to. I’m not buying the past tense.

Adam: [Sighs]

Sharon: Okay. Why are you cutting out someone who cares about you and appears to see the best in you and might even bring the best out of you?

Adam: Sharon, it’s — it’s complicated.

Sharon: You know what? When you find someone who you really match up with, it shouldn’t be complicated and you shouldn’t take it for granted.

Adam: Look, as I already told you, um, this is what’s best for everybody, okay? I need a break. And the trip that you heard me booking was for Vegas.

Sharon: Really? Given your history there, why would you want to go back there? And don’t forget — I’m the one who brought you home from Vegas. I wouldn’t want to see you slide into old bad habits. So, how long are you staying?

Adam: I’m taking off now.

[Laughter] Okay, you have a family to attend to, and I have a trip to pack for. Good luck with the procedure today, Tessa.

Tessa: Thank you.

*****************

Diane: you’re having a big talk.

Kyle: Yes, we are.

Diane: I know mommy and daddy shared some sad news with you, how father got hurt and he won’t be back. That’s kind of hard to believe or understand, isn’t it? Yeah. Hey, you and I just saw father at the park, didn’t we? I heard him telling you how much he loves you and how he had to go away on a trip, but that he’d be back soon.

[ Sighs ] But sometimes things happen in life that we aren’t expecting and our plans change, like — oh, do you remember the day that we were going to the park and then, when we went outside, it started to rain, so we decided to stay home? Yeah. Well, that’s — that’s one way that plans can change when something that we can’t control happens to us. And then all of a sudden, things aren’t the way we thought they’d be. But that doesn’t mean that father didn’t love you more than anything else in this world. I know that if father could be here with you, he would be. But this is just one of those times that something bad happened and he can’t be. Show me where your heart is.

[Chuckles] What a smart and brave boy you are. That’s — that’s absolutely right.

Kyle: Father’s still in there, in your heart.

Sally: No, it is nothing like that. I just — I learned something earlier. Adam was in here tonight, and I heard him talking with Sharon. I overheard him telling her what I had suspected all along. He admitted that the only reason he broke up with me was because he felt like it was best for me. He didn’t admit it to my face, but it’s a real motive behind him breaking things off.

Nick: Do you think we don’t know that already? And who cares? It shouldn’t change anything.

Sally: Yeah, but it does, because I’m not okay with him making that sacrifice.

Nick: Well, Adam doesn’t care what you think, obviously. He made this decision without consulting you, and he’s lying to you, and he’s continuing to lie to you.

Sally: It was a terrible, stupid mistake on Adam’s part, but I know he believes he’s doing the right thing.

Nick: You’re just making excuses for him, just like Sharon did and Chelsea and just like Victoria did for Ashland.

Sally: That is not what I’m doing.

Nick: Sally, what is wrong with you? You’ve got this incredible opportunity. It is right in front of your face. You just have to grab it. And you’re willing to throw it all away for this guy who stomped on your heart with both feet. Is this all the self-respect you have?

Sally: Why are you being so harsh? I bet this has more to do with what your sister just went through than it does with me. So please don’t put all your baggage on me. You don’t know me that well

*******************

Chloe: So, was I right about Adam earlier? Is he angry with you for staying on at Newman when he decided to quit? Is that why he broke up with you?

Sally: [Sighs] You have it backwards, Chloe. Adam broke up with me so that I can stay here. He knew that Victoria would never agree to keep me on as long as we were still together, that she could never trust me to somehow not be conspiring with him. So, he came up with some bogus story about not wanting to be with me because Victor wouldn’t approve.

Chloe: Oh, my god. That is just so hurtful.

Sally: I knew that that’s not how he really felt, which is exactly what you saw us arguing about earlier. And then tonight, I confirmed it. I overheard him admitting to Sharon that he only cut me loose so that our relationship wouldn’t get in the way of my job here at Newman Media.

Chloe: And let me guess, you confronted him right away.

Sally: Of course. I told him that this was a huge mistake and that he would regret it for the rest of his life, once I had moved on with someone else.

Chloe: Good for you.

Sally: But then I also

[Sighs] Told him that I didn’t want to get the job this way and that I would

[Inhaling deeply] Be turning in my resignation first thing in the morning.

Chloe: Okay. I — I’m not going to freak out right away, because I’m sure you just said that in the heat of the moment, and by now you’ve calmed down and realize that quitting would just be crazy right!

Noah: What, you got a problem with my plan already?

Summer: Yeah. A grandpa-shaped problem. I mean, he kind of likes having the top of the tower in the Newman building. He uses it a lot. He uses it as sort of like a second office. I’m not sure he’s gonna go for turning it into a nightclub with a glam vibe.

Kyle: [Chuckles] I don’t think Victor knows what glam vibe is.

Noah: I beg to differ, my friend. Have you seen pictures of him in the ’70s? Dude was a stud.

Kyle: I have.

Summer: True.

Kyle: And I stand corrected. But he was less of a Bowie and more of a Burt Reynolds.

Y&R Update Friday, August 12, 2022

Young & The Restless Update

Y&R logo

Recap written by Christine

Chelsea went to Lily’s office to see Billy and ask if they could go over some podcast ideas. He was working on the podcast now, and he was using Lily’s office since she was still in LA. Chelsea said he had a different energy in this room – more corporate. They exchanged banter, and she smiled. She asked when they were going to get the boys together for a playdate. He wouldn’t commit to a concrete plan, but she wouldn’t let it go. He said he had to talk with Johnny’s mother, once she had the bandwidth for the conversation. Chelsea said it was just a play date – the boys knew each other. He noted that their sons hadn’t spent time together in awhile. She didn’t see why that mattered, since Johnny and Connor got along great. Billy didn’t understand why Chelsea was being pushy about this. Chelsea felt like Billy was never going to change his stance about her when it came to Johnny.

Billy said that he wasn’t trying prevent Chelsea from seeing Johnny. He explained that his kids were having a to deal with Ashland’s death. She thought that this was all the more reason that Johnny should play with Connor. He asked her to accept it wasn’t the right time, and she said no. A few weeks ago she would’ve respected his response, because she’d been trying to make everyone else happy and she was just glad people were putting up with her, but now she was putting her wants first. He said he was on her side, and he reminded her that he brought her into the podcast. Chelsea was near tears. Billy said he and Victoria had raised Johnny the way Chelsea had said she wanted him to be raised. She said Johnny was her biological son, and she never got to see him or spend time with him. Billy reminded Chelsea that she was the one who made that choice not to be involved in Johnny’s life, and this agreement had worked for many years. He asked her what changed.

Chelsea said she had a different outlook on life since her recovery from what her mother called a huge emotional breakdown. She said she’d always been an outsider, and everyone viewed her with suspicion because of her past. She didn’t blame people for that, and she used to revel in it. She lost her sense of self worth after she poisoned Rey. When she came home, she begged Adam to take her back. “What was I thinking?,” she asked. He was sure she was glad Adam didn’t take her back. She said that it was hard to get some people out of your system, like Victoria and Billy. Chelsea said when she was in a dark place, Rey was the only one who reached out to her, and when he died, she felt like the rug was ripped out from under her, and she held onto things that made her feel safe, like her partnership with Chloe. It didn’t make her happy, though. She had an epiphany that she deserved to be happy, and working with Billy was a big part of that. She felt confident now. For so long, she felt like she didn’t connect with anyone, and now there were people on the internet who said what she said resonated with her. She realized she wanted to be open to letting other people into her life, and she thought Johnny was a big part of that. He wasn’t sure why she felt that way.

Chelsea said Johnny already knew Victoria wasn’t his biological mother. Would it be so bad if Johnny learned that Chelsea was his biological mother, she asked. Billy brought up the agreement again. Chelsea felt Victoria and Billy had done an incredible job with Johnny, but Chelsea wasn’t the same person she was when she signed that agreement years ago. She thought kids deserved to know the truth about their birth. She believed Johnny and Connor deserved to get to know each other and bond. Billy said he’d talk with Victoria. Chelsea was ready to discuss the podcast now, but Billy didn’t want to work on an empty stomach, so he said he’d take Chelsea to lunch.

Elena and Nate had a meal at Society. She thought it was weird that it was taking so long to get her out of her contract with Newman. He knew she was frustrated, but Imani was working on it. She said she wasn’t frustrated, it was just taking forever. Nate saw Sally walk in, and he called her over. Nate explained that they wanted to negotiate Elena’s departure from AskMDNow. He was sorry it had taken so long to reschedule the meeting, but the heads of their legal team had a family emergency. Sally didn’t know anything about a meeting. Nate said Imani arranged a dinner for the three of them, and Sally canceled at the last minute.

Sally looked through her planner, and then she told Nate there was never a meeting with her, him and Imani on the books. Nate figured there must’ve been a scheduling mix up. Elena congratulated Sally at taking the reins at Newman Media. Nate knew from experience that career changes were tough, but rewarding. He told her that Elena wanted to work at Chancellor Winters. Elena was appreciative of her time at Newman Media. Sally said AskMDNow was doing very well, so she could see why Chancellor Winters wanted to poach Elena. Nate said it wasn’t poaching, but Sally disagreed. She didn’t see why she’d let Chancellor Winters lure away Newman Media’s talent.

Elena had compiled a list of replacement doctors. Sally asked if Elena was unhappy at Newman Media. Elena enjoyed her time there. Nate said that, as the original face of AskMDNow, he was impressed on how Elena stepped into the format seamlessly, and he was sure any of the replacements on the list could do the same. Sally said there was a drop off in the audience when Nate left, and Elena had an intangible quality that not everyone had. Nate wrote a figure on a paper and showed it to Sally. A financial incentive to release Elena. Sally looked at the paper and seemed shocked by the number. She took the offer and said she’d be sad to see Elena go. Nate and Elena thanked Sally. Sally hoped this worked out for Elena, because she was a real talent.

Elena and Nate went to Chancellor Winters. He was surprised she wasn’t more happy about getting out of her contract. She said she was pleased. It was clear something was bothering her, and he asked what he missed. She couldn’t believe she had to explain this to him. She said the reason Sally couldn’t remember canceling the meeting with Nate and Imani was because she was never invited. Imani had planned an intimate night for herself and Nate.

Nate didn’t think there was anything nefarious going on. Meetings got canceled all the time. He said Elena had it in for Imani, and it was clouding her mind. She contended that she had a very clear view of this situation. She wondered if the reason he didn’t see what Imani was doing was because he didn’t want to. He asked if she was accusing him of being attracted to Imani. She wasn’t saying it was sexual, but she was sure Imani’s fawning was an ego boost. She said he just told her that Imani had been fueling his frustrations with Devon. She wondered if Imani was pushing Nate to be more aggressive. Nate said he didn’t need his ego boosted. He said Imani noticed that Devon tried to hold him back sometimes – the same thing that happened with Imani and Amanda. He said it was nice to have someone at work who supported him. “Oh, as opposed to your girlfriend who couldn’t comprehend? What because I’m not an executive?,” she said. He told her she’d been there for him every step of the way. Annoyed, she said he didn’t think she understood what was really going on, at least not the way Imani did.

Nate felt like Elena took Devon’s side whenever Nate talked to her about the dynamic. He noted that she kept saying Devon had more business experience. She didn’t know why the truth offended him. He said it felt dismissive. She said that you needed experience in an ER, so and she didn’t see why it would be different at business. He said he had a business education, and he ran a hospital department. She felt like he was saying he wasn’t supporting him enough or not the same way Imani was. She wasn’t sure of Imani’s motives, but Imani was trying to be his champion. He thought she was blowing it out of proportion. She respected him, so she was trying to tell him the truth. She thought Imani was telling Nate everything that he wanted to hear – a beautiful woman stroking his ego, and what could be more enticing than that?

Chelsea and Billy arrived at Society, and she made her way to Sally, who was sitting at the bar. Feigning sympathy, Chelsea said she felt so bad about the way Adam just dumped Sally. Chelsea thought Sally seemed to be doing better than she was the other day, when she’d chased after Adam. “Not particularly dignified,” Chelsea said. Sally asked how many times Chelsea and Adam broke up – five or six? Sally added that Chelsea and Adam had a kid, and they still couldn’t make it work, which was such a shame. Chelsea excused herself and went back to Billy.

Chelsea came up with the idea to do a true crime episode. She said the Grinning Soul hit a goldmine when they uncovered the Ashland Locke secret. He said he really respected the host of The Grinning Soul. Narrowing her eyes, Chelsea said she was sure the host respected Billy too. Billy said the host was impressed with Chelsea. Chelsea kept thinking about the scams she and Anita pulled. He thought that the audience would eat that up. She said he had an entirely different energy when he talked about this stuff, and it looked good on him. He said he loved riffing on topics and observing people. It was nice to be out of the corporate arena, he said. She asked why he kept going back to the corporate world.

Chelsea said she’d known Billy a long time, and she’d seen the scenario play out time and time again with his family. She said he thought he needed to act a certain way and live up to certain expectations, and he did for a time until the real Billy came out. She said he didn’t fit into the Abbott box, and he rebelled. He said he was in a really good place right now, and he thought he was past the need to rebel. She asked if he felt fulfilled being part of Chancellor Winters. He said it was difficult to answer honestly. She thought that meant the answer was no.

Kyle brought Summer to Dive Bar, and she noticed he was being mysterious about something. She wondered if it was about their moms. He said he had a great idea for Marchetti that had nothing to do with their mothers’ feud and it could help people they cared about. Kyle told Summer about Tessa having to put her career on hold. He said Tessa was going to tough it out and not tell people who frightened she was. Summer said that was how she’d handle it too. Kyle laughed and said he loved Summer, but she wasn’t the tough stoic type. He told her about Mariah’s idea to make Tessa a model at Marchetti’s print campaign. He said Tessa had the look they wanted, and her fans were Marchetti’s demographic. Summer liked the idea, but she was hesitant about Mariah’s involvement, and that always turned into a whole thing. He said Mariah would be on her best behavior. He thought Mariah had changed, and when she gave Summer a hard time now, there was no animosity to it. Summer countered that Mariah called her Snowflake for years. Kyle said Mariah was genuinely happy Summer was at the wedding. He said Mariah had her hands full at Jabot, so she didn’t have time to play showbiz wife to Tessa.

At Crimson Lights, Mariah brought Tessa tea the way she liked it. Mariah suggested they have a picnic by the lake to cheer her up. Tessa, who still wasn’t allowed to talk after her vocal cord surgery, wrote she was fine, on her white board, all caps. Mariah said she and Tessa’s connection was like a sixth sense, or even a seventh sense. She said when she was abducted by that maniac, Stitch, Tessa could tell she was scared. Mariah said it was pointless for Tessa to try and keep things from her, because she could feel what Tessa felt. Mariah wanted to help Tessa carry what she was feeling. Tessa admitted that not being able to do what she loved was making her crazy. Mariah suggested the picnic again. Tessa still didn’t think that would help. Mariah was sorry – sometimes she felt like she was making things worse or getting in the way. Tessa used text to voice on her phone to say that Mariah was wonderful. Mariah said they should find another outlet for Tessa’s creative energy.

Summer and Kyle walked into Crimson Lights. Mariah was sheepish because she was supposed to be at work. Summer and Kyle said they were here to see Tessa. Kyle asked Tessa to be the new face of Marchetti. Mariah acted shocked. Summer said Tessa looked elegant, sophisticated and fun. They liked the photo of Tessa on the album. Tessa was flattered by the offer, but it was a reminder of what she might be losing.

Mariah said that Tessa wasn’t going to lose anything, because she’d be able to sing again. They all encouraged Tessa to take the job. Mariah said Tessa would be expanding her fanbase for when things got back to normal. Tessa thanked them for the offer and apologized for the pity party. Tessa said it might be perfect, especially now. Mariah noted that they all thought Tessa would be an amazing model. Summer marveled at her and Mariah agreeing on something. Summer and Kyle left.

Tessa saw Mariah and Kyle conspiring yesterday, and she knew this was Mariah’s idea. Mariah continued to deny it. Tessa wrote on the whiteboard about their seventh sense. Mariah admitted it was her idea. She said selfishly, she wanted to see her beautiful wife’s face in magazines and on billboards. Tessa was too in love to be mad at Mariah. They kissed.

Sally went back to work and texted Adam that she’d tell him what she knew about Ashland if he told her the real reason he broke up with her.

Chance: Thank you. Well, good morning, victoria.

Victoria: Hello, chance. How are you?

Chance: Not too bad. How about yourself?

Victoria: Dragging a little. It was a late night with the kids. None of us could get any sleep.

Chance: Yeah, well, I’m sorry. I’m sure they’re feeling the loss of ashland.

Victoria: They’re coping, considering the circumstances.

Chance: Well, it’s good they have so much support. You know, when you’re investigating a death, sometimes you forget how many people it affects.

Victoria: Yes, that’s very true. Like ashland, who was not well-liked. To be honest, he left behind a lot of grief and pain. Your investigation isn’t really helping matters.

Chance: You know I’m just doing my job, right? I know it might seem heartless, but somebody’s gotta do it.

Victoria: I understand. I can handle your questions. I’m not intimidated by you.

Chance: Well, good, ’cause that’s not my intention. You know, honestly, nothing would make me feel better than to just close the book on this thing and move on.

Victoria: Well, if you really feel that way, then why don’t you put a stop to this investigation right now?

Abby: Thank you.

Adam: Hello, abby.

Abby: [ Chuckles ] Adam, hi. How are you?

Adam: I’m good. It’s been a minute, hasn’t it?

Abby: Well, you were here yesterday, weren’t you?

Adam: Oh, I — I come in all the time. I just mean, it’s been a while since you and i have had a chance to talk.

Abby: Well, I guess I’m shocked that you’re even supporting my restaurant, since you are cutting ties with anything newman these days.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, I can’t quit society. First of all, the food is delicious, and I think I would be punishing myself if I didn’t come here. Where else would I get the little crab-puff appetizers?

Abby: Nowhere in this town.

Adam: And secondly, my issues with our father and how he does business don’t have anything to do with you and me. There’s no reason we can’t have a conversation. Unless you disagree.

Abby: No, that seems fair. Your conflict with our father has nothing to do with me. And we have been civil. So, uh, sure. You know, why don’t I send you some crab puffs, on the house?

Adam: Oh, that is so nice. Thank you.

Abby: Will you be dining alone, or is someone joining you?

Adam: Um, dining solo. But actually, if you have a moment, I would love to talk to you about something.

Abby: Mm. Yep. There it is. You are being so pleasant, but you had an agenda the whole time, didn’t you?

Adam: You caught me.

Abby: Yeah. I knew you were buttering me up for something more than just the crab puffs, so, please, what would you like to talk about?

Adam: The death of ashland locke.

Sally: I understand that. Yes, chloe filled me in. But we need that data, jacob. I am meeting with three big advertisers next week, and i need to inform them who our audience is. If they like what they hear, they give us more money, which, in turn, I can pay you to do your job. If they don’t like what they hear, what happens? That’s right. So it is imperative that I get that data before the weekend. Yeah, I know you can do it. Just do it twice as fast. Oh. I didn’t hear you come in.

Victor: You and I have not spoken since you became C.E.O. Of newman media. I think we should talk.

Chance: Look, you and I both know it’s not that easy. I-I can’t just drop an investigation like this.

Victoria: You know, yesterday, you were talking about seeking the real truth and being devoted to the ideals of justice. But what exactly does that mean in this case?

Chance: Well, I’d love to hear your perspective on that.

Victoria: You have this notion that my father orchestrated this fake car accident. Why he would do that, I have no idea. You’ve gathered all of this information. You’ve talked to everyone about that night. You’ve done all of this work to support your theory, but you have absolutely no evidence to back it up. So I have to wonder, where is this headed?

Chance: You know I can’t tell you that.

Victoria: But if you really thought that ashland was dead before he was put into that car, are you going after my father for obstruction, or are you disputing nick’s account that he hit ashland in self-defense? You wouldn’t really, really accuse nicholas of killing ashland in cold blood and then conspiring with my father to come up with some cover story.

Chance: I never accused them of that.

Victoria: No. No, but I can tell that’s where you’re headed. You can’t accept that ashland’s death was an accident no matter where it happened. So what is your endgame? You wouldn’t go so far as to charge nick with murder, would you? Hi, I’m karen.

Nick: What’s going on?

Victoria: Well, I was just asking chance about his investigation. I wanted to know if he was prepared to ask the D.A. To charge you with murder.

Chance: [ Scoffs ] I have to admit, I admire your bluntness.

Victoria: Well, I’m just trying to figure out where your head is at. I mean, you said that you were on our side… but now it seems like you’re determined to prove that some sort of crime was committed. So I would appreciate an answer to my question about my brother.

Nick: I’d like that, too.

Chance: Okay. Well, I believe that you two acted out of good faith when you called me. I also believe that you had no intent to harm ashland. Whatever happened, it was an accident.

Nick: Yes, it was.

Victoria: Then why isn’t this matter settles? Because the way you just explained it, the case is closed.

Chance: Because we still do not know what happened from the time ashland was lying on your floor to the moment we found him in that ravine.

Nick: We have told you all the information we know.

Chance: And I’m not gonna tell you my next steps ’cause they will be informed by the outcome of my investigation. But you two should know, the more brazenly defiant you are, the more certain I am that I am on the right track — that you know what happened and you’re covering up for your father.

Abby: What’d you order?

Adam: Uh, the huevos con chorizo, with the verde sauce.

Abby: Mmm. You won’t be disappointed.

Adam: I hope not. So, what do you know about ashland’s death?

Abby: Not much more than anyone else. I was shocked. Weren’t you?

Adam: Uh, yes and no. I mean, when he came back to town, I got the sense that something terrible could happen, but I didn’t expect the guy was gonna turn up dead.

Abby: Yeah, it was awful, but I’m not gonna shed a tear for that man. I just hope that victoria gets some closure soon.

Adam: Me too. I haven’t had a chance to talk to her yet. And I think that my condolences would be welcomed. I’m sure she’s grateful to have your support. Does she seem okay?

Abby: W-we just talked over the phone, but it’s been rough.

Adam: Rough for her. Not so rough for our father.

Abby: What does that mean?

Adam: Well, he doesn’t seem too broken up about what happened, does he?

Abby: How would you expect him to react? Ashland put our family through hell. What, you think dad should be mourning?

Adam: Good point.

Abby: I just hope to never hear the name ashland locke ever again.

Adam: Well, that’s gonna be pretty unlikely, given the fact that your husband is investigating his death. I mean, that has to put you in a difficult position.

Abby: Why would you say that?

Adam: Look, abby, we don’t have to tiptoe around it, okay? I talked to chance. I know that he has his doubts about the so-called car accident. Now, that raises some questions for me, and I get the sense that it does for you, too.

Sally: I was wondering when you’d stop by. I thought it would’ve been earlier.

Victor: I’ve been a bit preoccupied.

Sally: So I’ve heard. I know you wish this office was still adam’s, not mine.

Victor: I got to tell you, I’m a little disappointed that you weren’t able to convince adam to stay on board.

Sally: I was hoping for the same.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Sally: But adam made it very clear that this job was not a good fit for him right now, and he felt the same way about our relationship.

Victor: Hmm.

Sally: I’m grateful that nick and victoria decided to keep me on. And, you know, they gave me a chance. It really means a lot to me.

Victor: I’m sure it does.

Sally: I know you’re skeptical, but I am determined to prove that I deserve this opportunity they gave me.

Victor: Well, that is what i came to talk about, okay? Sleek

Victor: I want you to know that I’ve been very pleased with how you’ve handled the ashland locke story.

Sally: Well, there’s really not much of a story if you only read the police report.

Victor: But you know there are a few more details.

Sally: What sort of details?

Victor: [ Chuckles ] I think, you know.

Sally: As I mentioned to nick, I do not feel compelled to publish anything about ashland showing up to victoria’s house before the accident. After all, the story is still unfolding, and the gcpd hasn’t even commented on that aspect of the situation.

Victor: You’ve handled the story so far with great restraint, great discretion. And if I were you, I would follow those instincts.

Sally: I will do my best.

Victor: You know, there’s a great opportunity you have now, right? You know, it’s a good thing about business — you can build something. It’s not just about money and power.

Sally: Those things don’t hurt, though, right?

Victor: Of course they’re important. But I haven’t spent decades building this business just for the sake of money and power. I’ve also done it for the sake of building something that will last. A legacy.

Sally: It’s really inspiring.

Victor: You have some important decisions to make in the future. I hope that you will prove yourself and stay in this position.

Sally: Thank you. Was that a compliment or a warning?

Victor: Why don’t you get back to your work, all right? You have a nice day.

You, too.

Abby: How was your breakfast?

Adam: It was delicious, as always. That verde sauce is a religious experience.

Abby: I will be sure to pass along your compliments to the chef. Hey, uh, what exactly did chance tell you about ashland’s accident?

Adam: He was tight-lipped, of course. You know, it’s an ongoing investigation, but I heard enough. Just the fact he’s investigating says a lot. I know that he’s even brought kevin into it. So you’re not betraying anyone’s confidence by admitting there’s more to the story.

Abby: Maybe not, but… I really don’t know much.

Adam: Look, abby, if you’re worried that the nightmare of ashland locke isn’t over for the people that you love, so am I. I’m just trying to help.

Abby: Adam, I can see through you. I know that you’re fishing for information, and I won’t give it to you.

Adam: Won’t? Or can’t? Okay. From what I gather, victoria hasn’t told you anything. And since you answered my query about dad with a question, that leads me to believe that you haven’t talked to him. And on top of that, you didn’t have much to say even about the most superficial aspects of what chance is doing. Which leads me to conclude that no one is telling you anything. You’re just as much on the outside as I am.

Abby: Look, you’re just saying that because you want me to tell you something.

Adam: I’m not trying to start a fight, really. I’m just — I’m calling it like I see it. They’re keeping information from both of us, abby. You know, I think we should team up. We should pool our resources. And if one of us hear’s something, we share it with the other person. Deal?

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Adam: All right. Keep in touch.

Nick: Look, chance, we understand that you want the facts. Here’s what I can tell you for certain. Nobody wanted ashland to die. But he was not a good person. You know that. He started this entire chain of events when he went after victoria and was terrorizing her. And I was glad to be there to protect my sister. Abby’s sister. And you know what? I would do it again in a heartbeat. When vic and I heard that ashland was found in his car, we had no reason to believe that he didn’t just get up off the floor, walk out to his car, and drive away. His death was accidental. It is the tragic ending to a terrible story. What more do you need to hear to accept it?

[ Cellphone rings ]

Chance: Excuse me. It’s abby. Give me a second. Hey. What’s going on?

Abby: I know you’re busy, but do you have any time to meet with me? It’s important.

Chance: Yeah, yeah. I was about to head back to the station. I can come by now. Are you at society?

Abby: I could use some fresh air. Meet me at the park?

Chance: All right. I’ll be right there.

Abby: I’ll see you soon.

Chance: Okay. I apologize. I have to run.

Victoria: Do you have anything to add before you go?

Chance: I think we’ve all said more than enough.

I like to v ost it, v ost it

Nick: The situation is getting worse by the minute. I hate it. I have nightmares every night. I see ashland’s lifeless body. It’s haunting me. It’s like his ultimate revenge.

Victoria: I don’t think that all hope is lost. I think chance is more conflicted than he’s actually letting on. I think he wants to help us.

Nick: Where are you getting that read? I don’t see that at all.

Chance: He seemed very sympathetic to what we’re going through before you arrived. Look, he’s not happy about having to look into this. He doesn’t want to see any of us go to jail.

Nick: Well, I think you’re falling victim to wishful thinking.

Victoria: Look, chance is gonna do the right thing. It’s who he is. Everybody knows it.

Nick: By “right,” you mean what?

Victoria: He’ll side with the family. We’ve done nothing wrong.

Nick: You think dad thinks that, too?

Victoria: I think he will go right along with what my opinion is, which is when given the choice, chance will always put family first.

Nick: I’m not so sure. I think we should go out to the ranch and tell dad that we had a run-in with chance, just so he knows we’re keeping him in the loop.

Victoria: Okay. But before we go there, there’s something that you should know, so that you’ll be prepared.

Chance: Hey. Is everything okay?

Abby: I’m not sure.

Chance: What’s going on?

Abby: We need to talk about ashland’s car accident.

Chance: Oh, abby, you know i can’T.

Abby: No chance, please. Just let me get this out. I know that you are keeping something from me, and I get it. I know you’re not supposed to talk about ongoing investigations, but I need to know what’s going on. Nikki was acting so weird yesterday. Nick and victoria, they haven’t said a word, and my dad is pretty much unreachable. And oddly enough, the only member of the newman family that will have a real conversation with me is adam.

Chance: When did you talk to him?

Abby: Right before I called you. He thinks that there’s something going on.

Chance: Okay, listen. I will tell you everything. I promise. As soon as we close this case. I promise.

Abby: I don’t think I can wait that long. I have this sick feeling in my stomach. So, please, can you tell me something, anything that will make it go away?

Chance: I’m so sorry. I did not mean to upset you. I really didn’T. And I — I know how unfair this is for you. I didn’t want to burden you with everything while I was still piecing everything together, you know? But I’m at a crossroads now.

Abby: About what?

Chance: I’m gonna share some confidential information with you.

Abby: Okay. Yes, I promise I will keep it to myself.

Chance: But this affects your family. Especially your dad. I don’t think it’s gonna be easy for you to hear.

[ Knock on door ]

Sally: Come in.

Adam: Thanks for the invitation.

Sally: Wow. I’m getting all sorts of visitors today. What brings you into enemy territory? Have you reconsidered cutting ties with newman?

Adam: Oh. Absolutely not. I, um… I’m here on a fact-finding mission only.

Sally: What would you like to know?

Adam: Well, I was hoping to find out what trouble my father has gotten the family into.

Sally: With regard to…?

Adam: Ashland locke. Of course.

Sally: I haven’t read or heard anything about victor being involved with the accident.

Adam: Oh. Come on, sally.

Sally: I think you’re jumping to conclusions. Probably in an attempt to paint your father in the worst possible light, which I find a little presumptuous of you to ask me to help you with that.

Adam: What, are you — are you on his side now because he’s signing your checks?

Sally: There are no sides. There’s just the truth.

Adam: Wow. That’s — that’s some world-class integrity. But, look, you don’t have to put on a show for me. You already admitted that you have insider information about the crash from nick. So would you like to share that with me now?

Sally: I already turned down that request. Did you forget?

Adam: No, but I was hoping that you might change your mind.

Sally: Not a chance. But I’m really glad that you put me in a position to tell you that you’re being pathetic for trying again.

Adam: Look… I hurt you, obviously. But our relationship had run its course, and our breakup had a added side benefit. You got to keep your job. So if you look at it that way, you should be grateful that I ended things.

Sally: But I told you that I didn’t want the job if that’s how I needed to get it.

Adam: Yeah. And yet you are still here. Look, surely we can come up with some sort of arrangement. A payment in exchange for your intel.

Sally: I have plenty of money now that I’m the C.E.O.

Adam: Maybe, uh… some kind of favor? Little quid pro quo?

Sally: Now you’ve got my attention.

Adam: Do you have something in mind?

Sally: I will tell you what you want to know about the ashland locke story if you finally admit that the sole reason you broke up with me was to get me this job. And that you still love me. Better skin from your body wash?

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Come on, sally, this is just — it’s ludicrous. Well, I mean, why don’t you just slip me a note that says, “do you like me? Check yes or no,” written on it, okay?

Sally: Janelle, get me some paper with some little hearts printed on it and a pen with pink ink. I have a note to write.

Adam: You know, you don’t have a receptionist out there, right?

Sally: Well, if I did, her name would be janelle, and she would bring me office supplies. That was cute and funny. And you thought it was charming.

Chloe: I thought we got rid of you.

Adam: Chloe. Always a pleasure.

Chloe: You don’t work here anymore.

Sally: It’s okay, chloe. This is important.

Chloe: Okay. Well, no matter how important it is, it can wait. I have something more urgent.

Sally: Okay. We have to figure this out.

Adam: Actually, it’s — it’s okay. Um, we can finish this later. I’ll be in, uh — in touch.

Sally: What the hell was that?

Chloe: Yeah, I was gonna ask you the same thing. I can read a room. I recognize that look in your eyes. There was hope. A longing. It was disgusting.

Sally: I’m not gonna apologize for having feelings.

Chloe: We just talked about how adam didn’t deserve any of your emotional bandwidth. What happened to the idea of leaving the past in the past, of letting the world know what we’re capable of and making a name for ourselves? Why would you sacrifice a drop of that success for another chance with adam?

Abby: So you think that nick killed ashland?

Chance: Not on purpose. Self-defense.

Abby: And that my dad staged a car accident to cover it up?

Chance: Mm-hmm. No, I don’t think nick and victoria had any part of that. Victor acted on his own to protect them.

Abby: Oh, my god. They called you that night.

Chance: I think they were trying to do the right thing. But now I think they found out what victor did. It’s their turn to protect him.

Abby: Do you have any proof?

Chance: Right now, it’s just a theory, but the circumstantial evidence I have, it backs it up.

Abby: This is unbelievable.

Chance: Is it? I mean, don’t think this is something your dad would do?

Abby: Okay, yes, it does sound like a move right out of his playbook. But you just said you don’t have anything concrete.

Chance: Yes. If I dig hard enough, abby, I am certain I can find something.

Abby: Then what will you do?

Chance: [ Breathes deeply ] You know, victoria asked me the same thing. She said I can just walk away right now, close the case. I mean, she stressed the fact that ashland’s death was an accident. But if I just — if I turn my cheek on what victor did… I mean, he committed a crime. Abby, where does that end?

Abby: Right there. If you let it.

Chance: Baby, you know, I take my job very seriously. I hold myself to a higher standard. You know that. I can’t just let a criminal walk away. But this isn’t just another case. This is your family. So now I desperately need to know what you’re thinking.

Nick: Dad?

Victor: Good. You’re both here.

Victoria: You sound like you were expecting us.

Victor: I have, indeed. I want to talk to both of you. This is a good time. There’s no one to overhear us.

Nick: What’s going on?

Victor: Had an interesting conversation with your mother last night. She told me about ashland locke’s body being removed from victoria’s home and put into a car and subsequently crashed into the ravine. Now, only about half a dozen people in the world knew about this. I certainly am not the one who wanted your mother to find out about it.

Trelegy for copd.

Nick: So, mom was pretty upset?

Victor: Yeah, because i didn’t tell her. But she understood why I did what I did. All right?

Nick: You wanted to keep us all in the dark?

Victor: Yes. To protect all of you. Your mother wouldn’t have known about any of this if victoria hadn’t told her.

Victoria: She already knew you were hiding something.

Victor: You shouldn’t have done it. As much as you, nicholas, shouldn’t have told your sister about it.

Nick: I cannot believe you think you could keep that information from victoria. She had a right to know.

Victoria: Just like mom does.

Victor: Listen to me carefully. You are now accessories to the crime because you have knowledge of it. So is your mother. Do you understand? You are now in danger.

Nick: Well, maybe you should have thought of that before you put this plan in motion. It was a big decision.

Victor: Don’t be wise-ass with me, okay? I did what I did because I had to, on the spur of the moment.

Nick: We should have been consulted. Instead, you acted alone.

Victor: Because I wanted to protect you. I always want to protect you. Instead of showing some appreciation, you attacked me.

Abby: Thank you for finally telling me what’s going on. And for asking my advice on what to do. But I think you already know what I’m gonna say.

Chance: I can’t be sure. That’s why we’re having this conversation.

Abby: Ashland was a deceitful, despicable bastard. He wreaked havoc on my sister, on my family, on this whole town. And if nick hadn’t stopped him, he might have killed victoria. And, no, I do not condone what my father did. But I understand it. He didn’t want nick to be punished for something that wasn’t his fault. We have all suffered enough because of ashland.

Chance: You want me to back off?

Abby: No. No, I-I — I can’t do that to you. I can’t do that to us. If I asked you to close this case, and then you did it, and then someday, down the road, you wake up and you regret that decision… you have a strong sense of what’s right and what’s wrong. And I know sometimes it’s hard to know which is which, but if you really look inside yourself… you’ll know, and you will know what to do, but… it has to be your call.

Chance: I love you so much. I love how honest and open we can be with each other.

Abby: So do I.

Chance: And you’re right. This is my decision.

Abby: Well, I have to get going. I have to take dominic to a mommy and me class.

Chance: Don’t keep him waiting.

Abby: I won’T. I love you.

Chance: I love you.

Adam: Chance.

Chance: Adam. Wow, man. Seems like you are everywhere today. Understand you talked to my wife.

Adam: We, uh, had an interesting chat.

Chance: I know what you’re doing. I’m not gonna answer any questions about locke.

Adam: All right. Well, that’s fine, because I wasn’t gonna ask you any. But I have an offer for you, one that I think you’ll find very interesting.

Sally: You’ve got it all wrong, chloe.

Chloe: I don’t think so. The way you and adam were looking at each other, something was up.

Sally: It was business. It was a negotiation.

Chloe: For what?

Sally: Information. Adam is looking for dirt on his family, and he knows I have the scoop from nick about what happened the night ashland died.

Chloe: So that’s what he wanted. What did you ask for in return?

Sally: Not much. I just wanted him to admit the real reason why he broke things off between us. It’s not what you think.

Chloe: I think you’re playing with fire.

Sally: I am in control. I’m not ignoring how he broke my heart or how he betrayed my trust.

Chloe: Good. That’s all you need to know. That he hurt you.

Sally: I want the truth from him. I want to know that I’m not crazy. We had something. That might not make sense to you, but it is what i would like from him.

Chloe: It makes some sense. You need real closure. And how could you trust your feelings in another relationship if you read the room so badly with him?

Sally: Exactly. And for the record, I was not looking to get back together with him.

Chloe: Good.

Sally: I was just looking to free myself of all of my self-doubt.

Chloe: That’s all terrific. But you’re willing to sell out nick’s confidence for it?

Sally: I don’t intend to hold up my end of the bargain. I’m totally gonna lie to adam once he comes clean with me. I was just gonna tell him that I don’t know anything about ashland and that it was all just a big tease.

Chloe: Oh, no. No.

Sally: What?

Chloe: I’m just glad I came when I did. So I could interrupt that transaction. You can’t do that to adam. He will be furious. And he will make it his life’s mission to make you regret it. Okay everyone,

Sally: I think you’re exaggerating. Adam would not react like that.

Chloe: You’re right. It’ll be worse.

Sally: After what he did to me, he has no right to be angry with me about playing him for the truth.

Chloe: Yeah, if he were a logical, rational person. But he’s not.

Sally: You have a history with him. You’re always gonna see him through a certain lens.

Chloe: A very clear lens from a very long distance.

Sally: He’s changed, chloe.

Chloe: He appears to have changed. But he’s done this before, and he always reverts back to who he is. You’ve heard the stories about his past, but unless you have really experienced him at his worst, then you will never truly grasp what he’s capable of. It’s just not worth the risk to find out how he really felt about you. So just forget that he stopped by. Forget this dangerous plan. Forget adam altogether.

Victoria: No one’s attacking you, dad.

Victor: You could’ve fooled me, sweetheart.

Victoria: We just want to make sure that we’re all on the same page moving forward.

Nick: Yeah. We had another run-in with chance. Dad, he’s not gonna let this go.

Victoria: I asked him to close the investigation, but he has this theory about what happened that night, and it’s actually pretty close to what actually happened.

Victor: I don’t give a damn about his theory. There’s no way he can substantiate that, okay? Ashland locke died in the ravine in his car. Period.

Nick: Okay. What should we do?

Victor: You do nothing. We present a united front from now on. If we do, we will come out of this investigation unscathed. Chance will move on. We move on. We put this chapter — this tragic chapter — finally behind us.

Chance: All right. Go ahead. What’s your offer?

Adam: Chance, I know you were looking into the events around locke’s death, but it’s not adding up, is it? Now, I would guess your suspicions about that night revolve around one person — victor. Now, I have questions about his involvement, too.

Chance: Get to the point.

Adam: Look, you’re in a tough spot. You have your wife and your in-laws on one side of the equation and your need to uncover the truth on the other side. I know how much that must be eating you up. I know how seriously you take your oath to serve justice.

Chance: I do.

Adam: Well, I don’t think you’re gonna get very far in your search for knowledge. My father is way too good at covering things up. You need someone on the inside.

Chance: And that’s you.

Adam: I know all his tricks. I can help you discover what happened that night. Chance, I’m telling you, you let me into this investigation, and maybe I can help you.

Recap written by Christine

Adam approached Abby at Society and said it’d been awhile. She noted that he was here yesterday, and he said he meant it had been awhile since they talked. She was surprised he was supporting Society since he’d cut ties with anything Newman. He loved the food, and he said that his issues with their father had nothing to do with him and her. She agreed, and she offered him food on the house. He asked her to join him for a conversation. She knew all along that he had an agenda in starting this discussion. She asked what he wanted to talk about, and he said Ashland’s death.

Abby sat with Adam at the bar. He asked what she knew about Ashland’s death. She didn’t know much more than anyone else. Adam said he’d suspected something terrible could happen, but he didn’t expect Ashland to die. Abby didn’t shed tears for Ashland. She just hoped Victoria got closure. Adam did too. He hadn’t talked to Victoria, because he didn’t think his condolences would be welcome. He asked Abby if their sister seemed okay. Abby only talked to Victoria over the phone, but it had been rough. Adam noted that Victor didn’t seem too broken up over it. Abby didn’t expect Victor to mourn Ashland after what he put their family through.

Abby didn’t want to ever hear Ashland’s name again. Adam thought that was unlikely since Chance was investigating his death. He guessed that put her in a difficult position. She asked why he’d say that. He told her that he’d talked to Chance, and he knew Chance had his doubts about the so-called car accident. She asked for more details on what Chance said. Adam stated that Chance had been tight-lipped, but to Adam, it was telling that Chance was even investigating. He told her that Chance brought Kevin into the investigation too, so she wouldn’t be betraying any confidence by admitting there was more to the story. She reiterated that she didn’t know much. Adam claimed that, like Abby, he was worried the nightmare of Ashland wasn’t over for the people she loved. Abby told Adam that she could see he was fishing for information, and she wasn’t going to give it to him. Adam got the feeling that no one in the family had told Abby anything. “You’re just as much on the outside as I am,” Adam contended. He told her that they should team up and pass on anything they heard to each other. He asked if it was a deal, and she didn’t reply.

Victoria and Chance bumped into each other at Crimson Lights. They talked, and he asked how her night was. She said she and the kids couldn’t sleep. He was sorry. He was sure the kids were feeling the loss of Ashland. He said when you were investigating a death, sometimes you forgot how many people it affected. Victoria said Ashland wasn’t well-liked, and he left behind a lot of grief and pain, which Chance’s investigation wasn’t helping. He knew it might seem heartless, but he was just doing his job. She understood and said she wasn’t intimidated by him. Nothing would make him feel better than to close the investigation. She asked why he didn’t do so, then.

Chance said he couldn’t just drop an investigation. Victoria said Chance had this notion that Victor orchestrated a fake car accident. She claimed she had no idea why Victor would do that. She noted that Chance had done a lot of work to support this theory, but he had no evidence to back it up. She wondered where this was headed – if Chance thought Ashland was dead before he got into the car, did he intend to go after Victor for obstruction, or was he disputing Nick’s account that he hit Ashland in self-defense? She theorized that Chance couldn’t accept that Ashland’s death was an accident. Victoria asked if Chance was planning to charge Nick with murder. Just then, Nick walked in.

Victoria brought Nick up to speed. She said Chance claimed he was on their side, but now it seemed like he was trying to prove a crime was committed. Chance believed Victoria and Nick were acting in good faith when they called him that night. He also believed that Nick never intended to harm Ashland and that whatever happened was an accident. Chance said the more defiant Nick and Victoria were, the more certain he was that they knew what happened and they were covering for their father. Nick said no one wanted Ashland to die, but he wasn’t a good person, and he set this all in motion when he terrorized Victoria. Nick was glad he was there that night to protect his sister – Abby’s sister, and he’d do it again in a heartbeat. He said when he and Victoria heard about Ashland being found in a ravine, they had no reason to believe he didn’t get up and drive away. Nick said Ashland’s death was accidental. Abby called Chance and they agreed to meet up at the park. After Chance left, Nick said he had nightmares about Ashland every night. He thought it was like Ashland’s final revenge. Victoria thought Chance wanted to help them. Nick was skeptical, and Victoria explained that Chance had seemed more sympathetic before Nick arrived. She believed Chance would do the right thing, which was to side with the family. Nick wasn’t so sure. He thought they should go to the ranch and tell Victor about their run in with Chance.

Sally had a firm discussion with an employee by phone. She needed some data to show the big advertisers she was meeting with next week. She insisted that they get her the numbers ASAP. When she looked up, she saw Victor standing in her office. Sally was surprised it took him so long to stop by. He’d been preoccupied. She knew he wished this office was Adam’s. He was disappointed she wasn’t able to convince Adam to stay on board. She’d hoped Adam would stay on too, but he made it clear this job wasn’t a good fit, and he felt the same way about their relationship. She was grateful Victoria and Nick gave her a chance. She was determined to prove she deserved the opportunity.

Victor was pleased with how Sally handled the Ashland Locke story. He assumed she knew more details than were included in the police report. He said she’d handled the story with great restraint and discretion, and he encouraged her to follow those instincts. He said she had the opportunity to build something – businesses weren’t just about money and power. She thought those things were important. He agreed, but he said he didn’t build businesses just for money and power – he also built them for a lasting legacy. He stated that she had some important decisions to make in the future, and he hoped she’d prove herself and stay in this position. She said thanks, but then she asked if that was a compliment or warning. He smiled and left.

Adam showed up at Sally’s office, and she asked if he’d reconsidered cutting ties with Newman. He said absolutely not. He was hoping to find out what trouble Victor had gotten the family into with regard to Ashland. Sally aid she hadn’t heard anything about Victor being involved the accident. She theorized that he was jumping the gun because he wanted to paint his father in the worst possible light. She found it presumptuous of him to ask her to help. He asked if she was siding with his dad because he signed her checks. She said there were no sides, there was just the truth. He told her she already admitted she had insider information about the crash from Nick. He asked if she’d like to share that with him. She reminded him she already turned down that request. She was glad that he put her in the position to tell him he was pathetic for trying again. He conceded that he hurt her, but he said their relationship had run its course. He thought she should be grateful he ended things, since she got to keep her job. She reminded him that she said she didn’t want the job if that was how she needed to get it.

Adam offered to pay Sally for her intel. She said she had plenty of money now that she was the CEO. He suggested he give her a favor. She said she’d tell him what he wanted to know if he finally admitted the sole reason he broke up with her was to get her the job and that he still loved her. He told her that was ludicrous. Chloe walked in and was unhappy to see Adam. Chloe had something important to discuss with Sally, so Adam said he’d be in touch, and he left. Chloe was disgusted by the hope and longing she saw in Sally’s eyes. Sally didn’t apologize for having feelings. Chloe noted that they’d just talked about how Adam didn’t deserve Sally’s emotional bandwidth. Chloe asked why Sally would sacrifice a drop of success for another chance with Adam.

Sally said she and Adam were just having a business negotiation. She shared the details with Chloe. Chloe thought Sally was playing with fire. Sally said she was in control, and she wasn’t ignoring how Adam broke her heart. She wanted the truth from Adam, and she wanted to know she wasn’t crazy to think they had something real. Chloe understood Sally wanting closure. Sally said wasn’t trying to get Adam back, she just wanted to relieve herself of the self doubt. Chloe asked about Sally’s willingness to sell out Nick. Sally said she was planning to lie to Adam, once he came clean, and say that she didn’t know anything about Ashland. Chloe was glad she came in before Sally had a chance to set that plan in motion. She said Sally couldn’t lie to Adam about that, because he’d be furious, and he’d make it his life’s mission to make Sally regret it. Sally thought Chloe was exaggerating.

Sally said that after what Adam did to her, he’d have no right to be mad at her for playing him. Chloe said Adam wasn’t a rational person. Sally said Chloe had a history with Adam, and she’d always see him through a certain lens, but he’d changed. Chloe said Adam appeared to have changed, but he’d done it before, and he always reverted back to who he was. Chloe knew Sally heard the stories, but she said until Sally experienced Adam at his worst, she’d never truly understand what he was capable of. Chloe told Sally to forget Adam stopped by, forget this dangerous plan, forget Adam all together.

At the park, Chance asked Abby what was going on. She knew he wasn’t supposed to talk about ongoing investigations, but she needed to know what was going on with Ashland’s accident. She said that Nikki acted weird yesterday, she hadn’t been able to reach Victor, and Nick and Victoria weren’t telling her anything. Oddly enough, the only member of the Newman family who’d have a real conversation with her was Adam. He promised to tell her everything as soon as they closed the case. She begged him to tell her something now. She had a sick feeling in her stomach. He was sorry he’d upset her. He didn’t want to burden her while he was piecing things together, but he was at a crossroads now. He decided to share some confidential information with her, and he warned her it wouldn’t be easy to hear.

Chance told Abby his theory that Nick killed Ashland in self-defense and Victor took it upon himself to cover it up with a staged car accident to protect Nick and Victoria. Chance said that he thought Victoria and Nick later found out what Victor did, and they were protecting him. Abby said this was unbelievable. Chance asked if it really was. Abby admitted this was a move out of Victor’s playbook, but she reminded Chance that he said he didn’t have concrete proof. He was sure he could find something if he kept digging. She asked if he was going to to that. He told her that Victoria said the same thing – that he could walk away and close the case. Chance said Victor committed a crime, and he couldn’t just let a criminal walk away. But he knew this wasn’t just another case, because this was Abby’s family. He asked her opinion on what he should do.

Abby stated that Ashland was a monster who wreaked havoc on the whole town and who may have killed Victoria if Nick didn’t stop him. She didn’t condone what her father did, but she understood it. He asked if she wanted him to back off. She thought that was a decision he had to make on his own. She didn’t want him to come to resent her for convincing him to close the case. He loved her and how open and honest they could be with each other. Adam came up and saw Abby and Chance kiss. Abby had to go, because she and Dominic had a Mommy and Me class. As soon as she left, Adam went up to Chance. Adam offered sympathy about the difficult position Chance was in, caught between his wife’s family and his need to uncover the truth. Chance wanted Adam to get to the point. Adam said Victor was skilled at cover-ups, so Chance would have a hard time getting the facts of the case. Adam knew all Victor’s tricks, and he said he’d help with the case, if Chance let him into the investigation.

Nick and Victoria went to the ranch, and they were surprised when it seemed like Victor had been expecting them. He said he had an interesting conversation with Nikki last night, and she told him about Ashland’s body being moved from Victoria’s house and ending up in the ravine. Only about a half a dozen people knew about this, and he didn’t want Nikki to find out about it. Nick noted that Victor had tried to keep all of them in the dark. Victor said he’d been trying to protect them all. He said Nikki never would’ve known if Victoria didn’t tell her. Victoria contended that Nikki already knew Victor was hiding something. Victor maintained that Victoria shouldn’t have told Nikki. Furthermore, he felt that Nick was wrong to tell Victoria. Nick said Victoria had a right to know. Victoria said Nikki did too. Victor said Nick, Victoria and Nikki were all in danger now because they’d become accessories to the crime. Nick argued that Victor should have thought of that before he put this plan in motion. Victor told Nick not to be a wise-ass. He said he did what he did on the spur of the moment to protect his family. He griped that he was being attacked instead of appreciated.

Victoria said no one was attacking Victor – they were all just trying to get on the same page. Nick said they had a run-in with Chance and he wasn’t going to let it go. Victoria said Chance’s theory was pretty close to the truth. Victor didn’t give a damn about Chance’s theory, since there was no way he could substantiate it. Victor said Ashland died in the ravine, period. Nick asked what they should do. Victor said they were to do nothing, just present a united front. He thought that Chance would eventually move on, and they could put this tragic chapter behind them.

Nikki: Well, this is a pleasant surprise.

Abby: Hi.

Nikki: Hi, sweetheart. What brings you by?

Abby: I was hoping to see victoria.

Nikki: Ah, she’s still at the office. Let’s sit.

Abby: Thanks. Yeah, I’ve reached out to her several times since ashland’s death, and I haven’t gotten much of a response.

Nikki: Oh, I’m sure she appreciates her concern. She’s been so busy dealing with everything at newman, but I can assure you that she is being very strong.

Abby: I’m not surprised. She’s the toughest person i know.

Nikki: Yeah, well, ashland’s death was a shock, of course, but I doubt many tears will be shed over him. We are hoping to put that behind us very soon.

Abby: Yeah, I-I… I just wish that chance wasn’t so determined to cross every “t” and dot every “I.”

[ Sighs ] I’m sure this will all be over soon. I mean, what’s left to investigate?

Devon: Okay, well, I was just calling to make sure that you landed safely, but do you want to let me know when you’ve spoken to naya’s doctor? Okay. I love you. Bye-bye.

Elena: Hey.

Devon: Hey.

Elena: Sorry. I hope I’m not interrupting.

Devon: No, not at all.

Elena: I was hoping I could ask you a question.

Devon: Okay.

Elena: It’s a personal question…about nate.

Imani: [ Sighs ] Nate.

Nate: Hey. I thought you’d be on your way to see your mom by now. I know amanda’s gone. When’s your flight?

Imani: Later tonight. But I keep forgetting the exact time. Hopefully, I could remember to head to the airport. I’m just an emotional mess right now.

Nate: That’s completely understandable, given your circumstances. Just relax. Give yourself a break. I know this is hard, but you’ll get through it.

Imani: Thank you, nate. That’s exactly what I needed to hear. You always know how to make me feel better. I’m going to miss not being able to lean on you while I’m gone.

Kyle: Hello, newlyweds. Thanks for inviting me to hang. Tessa, I heard your recovery was going smoothly, but I’m glad to see it for myself. You look great.

Voice app: Thanks, but i can’t wait to stop sounding like gps directions.

[ Both laugh ]

Mariah: Tessa is still resting her voice, but I’m not going to lie. I think I’m kind of starting to like it. I mean, the computer automated voice, it’s kind of sounding a little sexy to me, if you know what I mean.

Kyle: Glad to see you’re keeping your sense of humor.

Mariah: Well, you know, if you don’t laugh, you cry.

[ Chuckles ] But in other news, how’s harrison doing.

Kyle: So far, I think he’s handling ashland’s death pretty well, although I’m not sure he understands what happened.

Mariah: And you?

Kyle: I’m okay. Working on the marchetti relaunch. Pretty exciting.

Voice app: Oh, no, you’re not changing the subject that easily.

Diane: Hello, summer. Always good to see you.

Summer: Diane.

Diane: Kyle told me about phyllis coming to work for marchetti. I have to say, it was quite a surprise to hear that your mother would want to make such a gigantic career move. But I want to make it clear that it won’t be a problem. At least not on my end.

Billy: You can’t be serious. Hiring adam at jabot, of all people. I can’t tell you how ill-advised that is, and I can’t be the only family member to think that way.

Jack: I really don’t think hiring adam is is risky as you’re making it out to be.

Billy: Jack, I know you, but this is far too cavalier.

Jack: I believe in his abilities. Besides, he knows I’m going to be watching his every move. He’s not going to do anything crazy.

Billy: Which means he’s going to work twice as hard not to get caught.

Jack: His entire tenure at newman media was devoid of scandal. He built that into a very profitable enterprise. He would never have left if victor hadn’t jerked him around.

Billy: Right, and now he’s upset that he’s not in the top spot, which means, once again, as always, he’s got an ax to grind.

Jack: No, he’s looking for a fresh start, somewhere that he won’t be constantly competing with victoria. He knows he can trust me to treat him fairly.

Billy: Did you run this by ashley?

Jack: Yeah, she’ll be fine with it eventually. Look, she’s spending almost all of her time in paris, anyway. When she’s here, she’s focused on the lab, and that is out of his purview.

Billy: Oh, yeah, adam is no chemist, but yet he still finds himself in situations and makes them combustible.

Jack: I really think you’re making too much of this.

Billy: And I don’t think you’re taking this seriously enough. That man does not know any boundaries. Jack, you give him an inch and he will take the company.

Jack: Thank you for your input, billy. I am very comfortable with my decision. Besides, it isn’t like I haven’t offered you similar lifelines in the past.

Billy: No, that is true. And how many of those have worked out? And I’m your brother.

Jack: You seemed fine with giving diane another chance.

Billy: Well, some people deserve another chance, and some absolutely don’T.

[ Sighs ] Coverage, care, get it all.

Devon: I’m probably not the best person to talk to you about nate right now.

Elena: I guess I’m just trying to get a sense of the work dynamic here, because I can tell that nate is kind of having a hard time. And I know he would hate me broaching this subject with you.

Devon: Well, that’s probably all the more reason not to go there at all, then, right?

Elena: Yeah, but I can’t help but be concerned. I’m guessing that he still feels a little touchy about discussing the situation with me because of my history with you.

Devon: You think that’s still an issue?

Elena: Maybe. And I’m not trying to interfere with your business. I know it’s not my place. But I do care about the relationship between you and nate. I mean, I’ll probably always regret the damage that I caused your family. So I just wanted to know if there’s anything that I can do to help fix things.

Nate: You’re going to do just fine without me. You’re going to have your sister, amanda, to lean on.

Imani: I guess. I just feel so conflicted about everything these days. Going away now, leaving chancellor-winters in the lurch like this.

Nate: We all understand. This is not some vacation. This is about a family in trouble. And that takes precedence over anything else around here. Family is what this company is built on. We’re supposed to stick by each other no matter what.

Imani: Absolutely. But I keep getting the feeling maybe yours isn’t sticking by you.

Kyle: So I’m doing all I can to focus on harrison and help him through losing the man he knew as “father.” And on top of all that, my mom and summer’s mom working together at marchetti might start world war iii. Sorry you asked?

Mariah: No. No, no, of course not. It’s just, um, wow, that — that is a lot. Yeah, you were right. Is there anything that I can do to help?

Kyle: Thanks, but I’m pretty sure this is all stuff I have to handle on my own. I promise I’ll send up a flare if things go south.

Mariah: Tessa, it looks like our drinks are ready. Do you mind picking them up? Thank you.

Ke: I could’ve gotten them. Why did you send tessa when she can’t even say who the order’s for?

Mariah: Honestly, I needed her out of the picture for a secondecause I wanted to ask you something in private. A really, really big favor.

Billy: Well, clearly, there’s nothing else I can say. It’s your call whether you hire that viper or not.

Jack: Exactly.

Billy: Just remember, jack, that adam’s fangs are sharp and poisonous.

Phyllis: Well, look at this. The abbott men spending time together.

Jack: Actually, I was just on my way out.

Phyllis: Oh, it’s okay. I’m just here to talk about business with billy. So I wanted to discuss lily’s very generous offer to buy the grand phoenix. She said if I had a change of heart, I could talk to her or you.

Jack: Well, I’ll leave you two to discuss your business.

Phyllis: See ya.

Billy: Boy, things between you and jack when south fast. At least this time it’s not my fault.

Phyllis: I have moved on from that.

Billy: Mm.

Phyllis: And possibly moving on from the grand phoenix. I’m going to start working with summer at marchetti.

Billy: I’m sorry. What? You and diane working together?

[ Chuckles ]

Unleash the freshness…

Phyllis: Thank you. I will only be working at the same company as diane. We’re in different departments.

Billy: Yeah, well, I don’t think marchetti is big enough for the both of you.

Phyllis: You underestimate me. I can handle this.

Billy: I hope so. At least for jack’s sake.

Phyllis: I’m not going to let my daughter down.

Phyllis: Okay, well, the grand phoenix is a huge moneymaking endeavor. It’s not like some, you know, podcast.

Billy: My podcasts are actually quite popular. I should have you on the show sometime.

Phyllis: Oh, no, thank you. I’m kind of booked up. But thanks for the offer. Anyway, what I’m saying is the grand phoenix isn’t just some side hustle. It’s a business. And that’s why I wanted to talk to lily about going forward. I don’t think I could handle both marchetti and the grand phoenix.

Billy: Well, I appreciate your new-day mentality, and if that’s what this actually is, then devon and lily will be very happy to hear that. Of course, they told me about the offer, and I was very confident that you were not going to be interested.

Phyllis: That’s how little you know me, billy.

Billy: Well, maybe that’s true. But what I do know, with diane joining marchetti, there’s only two reasons for your new direction. Number one, you’re a fool to sell your hotel to go work with summer. Or number two, you have a plan for diane. And I’ve never known you to be a fool.

Phyllis: You’re right about that.

Billy: Phyllis, you have made some mistakes, some pretty spectacular ones, but you are as savvy as they come. And if you have a plan, well, I bet it involves hurting diane in some way.

Summer: I knew that kyle was going to tell you about my mom coming on board, and I’m glad to hear that you don’t foresee any issues, because we don’t intend to tolerate any turmoil. Marchetti is a business. It’s not a place for anyone to hash out their personal grievances.

Diane: Oh, I couldn’t agree more.

Summer: Great. Well, then we can consider this topic closed.

Diane: Do you mind if I ask a truly honest question before we set this aside?

Summer: Please do.

Diane: Don’t you suspect that your mother’s sudden and massive career move is directly tied to her hatred of me?

Kyle: A really big favor. What do you need?

Mariah: [ Sighs ] I’m worried about tessa. She is super bummed about missing her tour, and she’s putting on a good front, but I can tell. I mean, can you imagine how frustrating it must be? No speaking, no singing.

Kyle: It’s got to be hard, especially for someone with such a beautiful voice.

Mariah: And not to mention all the worrying about how this is going to affect her voice long-term. So I have been trying to think of a way to keep her busy, boost her spirits.

Kyle: Are you pitching that we gift her a free, glamorous, new design from marchetti? Because that’s easy. Go by the showroom. Have her pick something out.

Mariah: That is very, very sweet of you, and I’ll probably end up taking you up on that, but I was thinking more along the lines of a job.

Kyle: Really? You think she’d be interested?

Mariah: Yes. Tessa is a huge fan of marchetti’s line, and she’s always been passionate about fashion. It’s a natural fit, and from a P.R. Standpoint, I’m sure you guys are going to need models for your new U.S. Rollout.

Kyle: Yes, we’re working on it.

Mariah: So who better to team up with than hot singing star tessa porter?

Nikki: Has chance told you exactly what he’s still investigating?

Abby: Not specifically, no. But maybe because of all the lies ashland told, he’s making sure that there’s nothing left uncovered.

Nikki: Well, you have to know how incredibly hard this has been for victoria. And I think the longer the investigation goes on, the more difficult it will be for her to move past it.

Abby: What are you trying to say? That chance should back off the ashland case?

Nikki: Wouldn’t that be what’s best for everybody? Tattoo studio gel pencil liner from maybelline new york.

Summer: Of course, i considered that my mom’s career shift might have something to do with you coming to work at marchetti. And believe me, I let her know my suspicions, as well.

Diane: But you hired her anyway.

Summer: Yes, I did. With the same warning that kyle gave you. We’re going to be keeping a watchful eye on both of you. And my mom has assured me that there won’t be any problems. And I have high hopes that she means what she says, because this is an amazing opportunity for me and my mother to work together just as it is for you and kyle.

Diane: Well, you don’t have to worry about me. I want this to work out more than anyone. In fact, I would love it if phyllis could find a way to forgive me. You know, maybe this whole thing will just be a miracle in disguise.

Phyllis: You know, I find it annoying, ridiculous that everybody in this town seems to think that I always have some nefarious plan, some nefarious intention.

Billy: Yeah, it’s super annoying and ridiculous that people would be curious why you would be selling your prized possession out of the blue to go work with your sworn enemy.

Phyllis: I’m not working with my sworn enemy, billy. I’m working side-by-side with my daughter. I’m helping her attain her vision of marchetti.

Billy: Once again, phyllis, you’re casting yourself in a supporting role, and that’s not you. You are the queen bee.

Phyllis: You know, I like a challenge. You know that, billy.

Billy: Mm-hmm.

Phyllis: I thrive for a challenge, don’t I? And I’ll be overseeing the home-design division of marchetti. It’s a huge, huge position. It’s hardly a supporting player.

Billy: Okay, then. Why didn’t you say that? Because that actually sounds like a cool gig.

Phyllis: It is a cool gig. It’s a great gig. So that’s why I have risen above my hatred for diane, a hatred that cost me my relationship with jack and any sort of happiness that I would find with him. The sort of happiness I’ll never — I’ll never get again, I’m afraid.

Billy: Oh, boy. You are definitely up to something.

Devon: Yeah, I appreciate your concern, but what’s going on between nate and me has nothing to do with you or our history.

Elena: [ Sighs ] Good to know.

Devon: Yeah. It’s just… like, work doesn’t change the way I feel about him as family, but as a c-suite executive, he’s created a few issues. But it’s not all his fault. I take a little bit of blame, too.

Elena: Yeah?

Devon: Yeah.

Elena: In what way?

Devon: Well, I just sort of eased him into this high-level position instead of just throwing him into the deep end and expecting him to swim.

Elena: Oh. Well, look, I know you have a lot of business experience, and you were fortunate to have neil as a guide. But nate isn’t some wet-behind-the-ear college grad just starting out in the world, so he probably shouldn’t be treated as one. I mean, do you think it’s possible that you’ve put up some defenses when it comes to nate?

Devon: No. No, not at all. The only thing I’ve done is clearly lay out how I believe the hierarchy should work, and, for whatever reason, he’s been reluctant to embrace it, which is now causing me to wonder if I made a mistake altogether bringing him on board.

Nate: You’re dealing with enough right now. The last thing you need from me is to burden you with my troubles.

Imani: Honestly, I could use the distraction. I have the whole plane ride to virginia to worry about my mother’s condition. So in the meantime, let me be here for you for a change.

Nate: Okay. As long as you remember, you asked for it.

Imani: I did. Now, tell me what’s going on.

Nate: Devon is apparently worried that I’m some sort of liability to chancellor-winters. We had a slight misunderstanding about something that I was able to fix once I realized it was a problem.

Imani: Mm, that doesn’t sound like a big deal.

Nate: First year post-merger is critical for chancellor-winters. Devon is afraid that I made us look bad, and he wants to give me a mentor.

Imani: A mentor? Are you serious? You just started your business career. Devon didn’t even give you enough time to prove yourself. Meet febreze’s miracle spray: Febreze fabric refresher.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Mariah: So? What do you think? Don’t you think tessa would make a great model while her voice recovers?

Kyle: Well, I have to admit it is an intriguing idea, and summer did mention finding a fresh face to usher in the new era of the fashion line.

Mariah: Great minds.

Kyle: Of course, I would have to talk to her before I commit to anything. She is the creative eye of the brand.

Mariah: I know that it’s not a done deal. I’m just happy you didn’t dismiss it out of hand. Okay, please don’t say anything to tessa before it’s a done deal, alright? I don’t want to get her hopes up for nothing. Okay? Cool. Hey. Oh. Thank you so much.

Kyle: Thank you.

Voice app: What?

Mariah: What?

Voice app: My voice may be gone, but my eyes and ears still work. What’s going on with you two?

Mariah: No, nothing. I was just discussing this awesome weather that we’re having.

Diane: Maybe having phyllis come to marchetti will give us a chance to bond on some level.

Summer: I think you’re laying it on a little thick now, diane.

Diane: Am I? Think how different things would be if your mother could find a way to forgive me the same way kyle has and jack seems to be on the verge of doing.

Summer: I wouldn’t put too much hope into total forgiveness.

Diane: You’re probably right. It’s probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Summer: I’m not just talking about my mother. I mean, that is a tall order for jack, too.

Diane: I see.

Summer: Diane, I’ve watched you with harrison. I mean, you are absolutely wonderful with him, especially given everything that’s going on. But that doesn’t erase your history.

Diane: I realize that, summer, and I know that I have a lot more work to do in that regard.

Summer: A lot more. Jack is working hard to keep the peace for kyle and harrison’s sake. But, you know, I’m going to give you the same warning I gave my mom. Don’t attempt to manipulate jack the way that you have in the past. I am just as protective of him as I am of kyle.

Diane: Good to know.

Summer: And if you do pull anything at all, you’ll have to contend with me.

Phyllis: Why can’t you believe that my heart is in the right place?

Billy: Okay, just stop. Stop the phony denials for a second, okay, and just hear me out. I’m not here to criticize you. I’m speaking to you as an ex-lover and a semi-friend.

Phyllis: Semi? Pushing it. Really.

Billy: Take this for what it is, phyllis. Let it go. Whatever you have planned for diane, walk away. Because even if you win — and my money’s on you — you will still lose in the end.

Phyllis: What makes you think I will lose?

Billy: Because there is always collateral damage in war. And I’m looking at the battlefield, and I see that collateral damage is going to be summer.

Phyllis: It’ll never be summer. Summer won’t be near the line of fire, billy.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: If there was a line of fire, which there is not.

Billy: Okay, well, let me share another little tidbit of breaking news with you, because it could cause more damage to this equation.

Phyllis: Alright, tell me.

Billy: You’ll be working at marchetti, but, of course, that’s still under the jabot umbrella. Kyle is leaving jabot to go run marchetti. Which means the powers that be at jabot will be shifting.

Phyllis: Who exactly is shifting?

Billy: Brace yourself. Adam. Jack offered adam a job at jabot. (Tonya) smoking damaged my heart.

Phyllis: Adam is working at jabot?

Billy: Believe me, I was just as surprised as you.

Phyllis: What is he going to be doing?

Billy: He’s filling in for kyle. Co-ceo.

Phyllis: Co-ceo? He’ll have power.

Billy: Yeah.

Phyllis: Jack is literally filling his son’s shoes with adam.

Billy: Apparently, adam hasn’t decided whether he wants to take the job or not, but there’s no talking jack out of the offer because we know jack. Not only is he filling a corporate need, but he’s saving adam’s soul.

Phyllis: This is unbelievable. It’s unbelievable. Adam is yet another person who gets an umpteenth chance to redeem himself in jack’s eyes. I mean, this is how it is. It’s diane, adam, and then me.

Billy: Look, I get it, okay, but I think you need to focus on the ramifications, because you know just as well as I do, you throw adam into any mix, it’s a recipe for disaster.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Well, it doesn’t matter with marchetti because summer and kyle are running marchetti. I mean, you don’t think that jack is going to involve adam in that company, do you?

Billy: I don’t know. But if he does, whose side do you think is going to take, yours or diane’s?

Phyllis: Oh, well, adam’s definitely going to take diane’s side, given their history.

Billy: Right.

Phyllis: And jack is just going to follow along and give diane the benefit of the doubt like he’s been doing.

Billy: So think about it. Do you want to be the one responsible for throwing oil on the fire?

[ Cellphone rings ]

Phyllis: [ Scoffs ] I have to take this. Hello?

Nikki: We need to meet.

Imani: I hate that you’re getting so little support from your cousin. You don’t deserve to be treated like that.

Nate: Unfortunately, I don’t think devon’s is going to change his mind. He’s determined to view me as some sort of screw-up.

Imani: That’s ridiculous. I know you could be doing so much more. You have so much potential, and you are so close to taking off and soaring. Maybe devon is threatened by that.

Nate: Thank you, imani. It’s nice to get some support from a colleague for a change. You know, I have felt like devon’s been holding me back.

Imani: Mm.

Nate: But there’s also a chance he might be right. Maybe I overstepped a few times, but not out of malice or arrogance or anything like that. It was from pure enthusiasm. I don’t know. Maybe I need to learn to play the game a little better.

Imani: Mnh-mnh. That’s one way to go, but I don’t agree with that strategy. Clearly, devon needs to be the only one in full control.

Abby: Hey.

Devon: Hey.

Abby: Mwah! How lucky am I to run into you?

Devon: Oh, it’s always good to see you. Oh, and thank you for that new picture of dominic you sent me here. It’s my screen saver now.

Abby: Oh, my gosh. It’s so cute. Chance did the same thing. He wanted to see the picture every time he pulls out his phone.

Devon: Is he going to be stopping by later?

Abby: Oh, no, I highly doubt it. He’s been working these crazy hours trying to tie up any loose ends on the ashland locke car crash.

Devon: What loose ends could there be?

Abby: You know, I keep asking myself the same question, and the more I think about it, the more I think I’m not going to like the answer.

Devon: Why do you say that?

Abby: [ Sighs ] I think chance is keeping something from me because my family’s involved, and that can’t be good.

Phyllis: Where’s ashley? Is she going to grace us with her presence?

Nikki: Oh, I’m afraid not. She had to go out of town on business. Please have a seat.

Phyllis: Out of town on business, huh? Okay, I thought this was supposed to be a group effort, but one of our coconspirators is completely useless, nikki.

Nikki: Oh, no, she is not. She is completely committed to our cause, although she is still concerned about your sabotage plan. In fact, that’s why I asked you to come over, because I need to know the details of your next moves.

Phyllis: The details? I thought we were good. Wait a second. Are you saying that you don’t trust me?

Nikki: Well, in a word, no.

With age comes more…

Devon: I get why you’d be concerned about what chance is working on, but, you know, you can trust him to do the right thing.

Abby: Oh, of course he will. I’m just — I’m worried about my sister. Victoria has been through so much.

Devon: If anybody can handle it, she can.

Abby: Yeah, I keep telling myself that. But enough of me and all of my worries. How are you and amanda?

Devon: Uh… well, I wish I could give you some happier news, but we’re actually going through a difficult time because her mother is dealing with some serious health issues right now. Naya slipped into a coma.

Abby: I am so sorry to hear that.

Devon: Yeah, it’s rough, so amanda is back in virginia right now with her mom, and i wish I could’ve gone with her.

Abby: Oh, well, why didn’t you?

Devon: I offered to go, but she said that it was fine and she had it under control. And, plus, things have been a little tense at chancellor-winters lately.

Abby: Oh.

Devon: So, yeah. Working with family has its own set of complications.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Yeah. I totally understand that. That’s why I’m so happy to have society. It’s my own special place. No judgment, no interference. Yeah, and thanks to you and all the advice that you gave me, this place is a big success.

Devon: Good.

Abby: I just realized something.

Devon: Mm-hmm. What?

Abby: That you, devon hamilton, have been instrumental in two out of the three loves of my life, my work and dominic.

Devon: Mm. Well, at least I’ve done something right.

Abby: Mm.

[ Both chuckle ]

Imani: Listen, I understand that you want to think the best of your cousin, but devon isn’t looking at the bigger picture here. In my opinion, the last thing you need to do is take a step back. If anything, you need to turn up the heat, not give in.

Nate: But I don’t want to create more conflict.

Imani: Maybe not, but it’s clear and sad devon doesn’t value what you bring to the work. And I’m sorry, but slow and steady isn’t going to convince him otherwise.

Nate: So what do you think will?

Imani: Remember how you took the bull by the horns at the launch? Hm?

Imani: People responded so positively to you.

Imani: You need to do something like that again, only bigger and bolder. Something that will demand attention and respect.

Mariah: [ Chuckling ] What? Nothing is going on with us. Seriously.

Kyle: Yeah, we were just catching up. There’s nothing for you to worry about. Hey, there’s my beautiful wife.

Mariah: Hey. Hi, summer. Kyle was just talking about you, actually. All good things, of course.

Summer: I would certainly hope so.

Mariah: And I wish that we could stay and chat, but we have to go.

Summer: Please don’t go on my account.

Mariah: Oh, no, no. No, I think you and kyle need some private time, so we’re going to go, but we’ll see you guys later. Yeah, bye.

Kyle: What’s up?

Summer: I just had a very interesting encounter with your mother.

Kyle: Mm. Interesting how?

Summer: She was spinning this fantasy about my mother forgiving her and the two of them bonding.

Kyle: Well, that’s never going to happen.

Summer: I know. So I have to wonder, are we asking for trouble here, expecting our mothers to peacefully work together?

Kyle: If we pull a job offer from either one of them, it could spur off into something even worse now.

Summer: It would probably launch an all-out war.

Kyle: I think we have to get them to stick to their word.

Summer: And if they don’t?

Kyle: It’s up to us to keep the peace. And there’s still a chance that both our moms could happily surprise us.

Summer: I would so like to believe that that’s possible.

Phyllis: Okay. Surprise. Surprise. Guess what. I don’t trust you and ashley, either.

Nikki: Well, you might be surprised to know that the reason I don’t trust you is somewhat of a compliment.

Phyllis: Oh, really? I have to hear this.

Nikki: Phyllis, I am worried that you might back down at the last minute out of concern for summer, and I completely understand that maternal instinct to want to protect your child. You and I have that in common. But it doesn’t really help our cause. The best way to keep summer and her family safe is to get diane out of town for good.

Phyllis: Yes, I know that. I agree with you. Nikki, I mean, I don’t appreciate your backhanded compliment about protecting my daughter. I don’t appreciate that, especially since I’m the only one in this triumvirate who’s actually doing something. So you have worries, you have concerns. I get it. But until you really contribute, keep your opinions to yourself, okay?

Jack: Hi. Could I get a coffee, black, to go, please? Diane. Hey, I’m glad I ran into you.

Diane: Oh, that’s nice to hear, but why?

Jack: Well, I have been reading to harrison from the books you gave him that deal with loss and grief, and they’ve been very special, very, very helpful. I can already see the positive effects they’re having on him.

Diane: Aww, that’s good. I’m glad. Hey, thank you for sharing that with me.

Jack: The ones I was reading to him today were the teddy bear stories. Yeah, and he got it right away. He saw the parallels between the story and his loss of a man he always thought was his father.

Diane: Well, we’re lucky we have such a bright grandson.

Jack: We are indeed. Thank you. I mean it. Thank you for a very thoughtful gift.

Young & The Restless Update

Y&R logo

Recap written by Christine

Abby went to the Ranch looking for Victoria, and Nikki said she was still at work. Abby had reached out to Victoria several times since Ashland’s death, but she hadn’t gotten much of a response. Nikki said Victoria had been busy with Newman Enterprises, but she’d been very strong. Abby wasn’t surprised. Victoria was the toughest person she knew. Nikki said Ashland’s death was a shock, but she didn’t think many tears would be shed. Abby wished Chance wasn’t so determined to cross every T and dot every I. She was sure this investigation would end soon. Nikki asked if Chance said what he was investigating. Abby didn’t know specifics, but she guessed Chance was being thorough because of all Ashland’s lies. Nikki thought that the longer this went on, the more difficult it would be on Victoria. She thought it would be best for everyone if Chance backed off.

Devon was at work. He called Amanda just to check in. The call ended, and he saw that Elena was there. She had a personal question about Nate. Devon didn’t think he was the best person to discuss Nate with right now. Elena was trying to get a sense of the work dynamic here, because she could tell Nate was having a hard time, and she knew he would hate her broaching the subject with Devon. Devon thought that was all the more reason not to have this conversation. Elena was concerned though, and she guessed Nate felt touchy about discussing work things with her, due to her history with Devon. She knew it wasn’t her place to interfere, but she cared about the relationship between Devon and Nate, and she felt regret about the damage she caused his family. She asked if there was anything she could do to help fix things.

Devon said what was going on between him and Nate had nothing to do with Elena. She sighed in relief. He said work didn’t change the way he felt about Nate as family, but as a C-suite executive, Nate had created a few issues. Devon took some of the blame for not easing Nate into a high level position instead of just throwing him in the deep end. Elena knew Devon had business experience, and he’d been guided by Neil, but she said Nate wasn’t a recent college grad, just starting out in the world, and he probably shouldn’t be treated as one. She asked if Devon had put up defenses when it came to Nate. He said no, all he’d done was clearly lay out how he believed the hierarchy should work. Nate’s reluctance to embrace it made Devon wonder if it was a mistake to bring him on board.

Devon and Abby ran into each other at Society. she thanked him for the picture of Dominic. He was using it on his phone lock screen. Abby said Chance had made it his lock screen too. He asked if Chance would be coming here. She didn’t think so – he’d been working crazy hours tying up loose ends on the Locke car crash. She had a feeling Chance was keeping something from her, because her family was involved, and that couldn’t be good. Devon said Abby could trust Chance to do the right thing. She knew that, but she was worried about her sister.

Abby asked about Devon and Amanda. He told her about Naya’s coma. Amanda was in Virginia with her mother, and Devon wanted to go, but Amanda said it was fine. He said things had been tense at Chancellor Winters. Working with family had complications. That was why Abby was glad she had Society – her own special place without judgment or interference. She said the place was a big success thanks to Devon and all the advice he gave her. She said he’d been instrumental in two out of the three loves of her life – her work and Dominic. He said at least he’d done something right.

Imani saw Nate at Crimson Lights. He was surprised she wasn’t on her way to see her mom. Her flight wasn’t until tonight. She was an emotional mess. He offered some encouraging words, and she said he always knew how to make her feel better. She’d miss not being able to lean on him while she was gone. He said she’d have Amanda to lean on. She felt conflicted about leaving the job in the lurch. He said the company was built on family, and they were supposed to stick by each other. Imani didn’t think it sounded like Nate’s family was sticking by him.

Nate didn’t want to burden Imani with his troubles, but she said she could use the distraction. He said Devon was worried Nate was a liability at Chancellor Winters. Nate said there was a slight misunderstanding that he fixed as soon as he found out there was a problem, but now Devon wanted to give him a mentor. Imani scoffed that Devon didn’t even give Nate a chance to prove himself. Nate said Devon was determined to see him as a screw up. Imani suggested Devon felt threatened by Nate’s potential. Nate also felt that Devon was holding him back, but he admitted Devon could be right – maybe Nate overstepped a few times, but out of enthusiasm, not malice. Nate said maybe he needed to learn the game better. Imani didn’t agree with that strategy. It was clear to her that Devon wanted to be the only one in full control.

Imani understood Nate wanted to see the best in his cousin, but she didn’t think he was looking at the full picture. She said he should turn up the heat, not give in. He didn’t want to create more conflict. She said Devon didn’t value what Nate was bringing to the job, and slow and steady wasn’t going to convince him otherwise. She reminded him of how he took the bull by the horns at the launch and people responded positively. She thought he needed to do something like that, but bigger and bolder that would demand attention and respect.

At Crimson Lights, Diane approached Summer. She was surprised about Phyllis’s gigantic career move, but it wasn’t going to be a problem, at least for Diane. Summer was glad to hear that, because she and Kyle didn’t intend to tolerate any turmoil at Marchetti. “Don’t you suspect that your mother’s sudden and massive career move is directly tied to her hatred of me?,” Diane asked. Summer said of course she did, and she gave Phyllis the same warning Diane received from Kyle. Phyllis had assured Diane there wouldn’t be any problems. Summer hoped Phyllis meant it, because this would be an amazing opportunity for her and her mom to work together, just as it was for Diane and Kyle. Diane said she wanted this to work out, and she’d love it if Phyllis forgave her.

Diane said she and Phyllis might be able to bond. Summer thought Diane was laying it on a little thick. Diane said Kyle forgave her, and Jack seemed to be on the verge of doing that. Summer thought that was a tall order for Jack to forgive Diane. Summer thought Diane was wonderful with Harrison, but it didn’t erase her history. Diane realized that, and she realized she had a lot more work to do in that regard. Summer echoed that Diane had a lot more work to do. Summer said Jack was working to keep the peace for Kyle and Harrison. She stated that she’d give Diane the same warning she gave Phyllis – don’t attempt to manipulate Jack the way she had in the past. Summer warned that she was just as protective of Jack as she was of Kyle, and if Diane pulled anything, she’d have to contend with her.

Kyle spent time with Mariah and Tessa at Dive Bar. Tessa was having to use a computer automated voice to communicate, because she had to rest her voice after surgery. Mariah said the voice was starting to sound sexy. Kyle complimented her on keeping her sense of humor, and she said if you didn’t laugh, you’d cry. Mariah asked about Harrison. Kyle said he was handling Ashland’s death well, but he didn’t seem to understand what happened. Mariah asked how Kyle was, and he started talking about the Marchetti relaunch. Tessa told Kyle not to change the subject. Kyle admitted he had a lot on his plate. He was trying to help Harrison through the loss of his father, and now his mom and Summer’s mom were going to work together, which could start world war III. Mariah asked if she could help. He thought he had to handle it on his own.

Mariah sent Tessa to grab the drinks, then she told Kyle she had to ask him for a really big favor. He asked what she needed. Mariah was worried about Tessa, who was really bummed about missing her tour. She’d been trying to think of a way to boost Tessa’s spirits. She thought Tessa might love a job at Marchetti. Tessa was a huge fan of Marchetti, and she was passionate about fashion. Mariah was sure Marchetti would need models, and who better to team up with than than a singing star, like Tessa.

Kyle was intrigued. He recalled Summer mentioning they needed a fresh face for the new fashion line. He’d have to talk to Summer before he committed to anything. Mariah was just happy Kyle didn’t dismiss the idea out of hand. She asked him not to say anything to Tessa before it was a done deal, so they didn’t get her hopes up. Tessa returned. Tessa could tell something was going on with Kyle and Mariah. They pretended they were just chatting. Summer walked up, and Mariah said hi, then she announced that she and Tessa had to go.

Summer and Kyle were now alone. She told him about his mother’s fantasy of bonding with Phyllis. He said that would never happen. She wondered if they were asking for trouble expecting their mothers to peacefully work together. He said if they rescinded a job offer from either one of them, it could spawn an all out war.

At Society, Billy told Jack that it was a bad idea to hire Adam at Jabot. Billy thought other Abbotts would agree. Jack believed in Adam. He was also going to be watching Adam’s every move. Jack said Adam turned Newman Media into a profitable enterprise, and his tenure was devoid of scandal. Jack said Adam would still be there if Victor didn’t jerk him around. Billy said Adam had an ax to grind. Jack thought Adam wanted a fresh start somewhere that he wouldn’t have to compete with Victoria. Billy asked how Ashley would feel. Jack said she’d eventually be fine with it – she spent most of her time in Paris, and when she was here, she was in the lab, which was out of Adam’s purview. Billy said that Adam would take the company. Jack said he’d offered Billy similar lifelines in the past. “And how many of those have worked out? And I’m your brother,” Billy replied. Jack said Billy felt fine giving Diane another chance. Billy felt that some people deserved another chance, while others didn’t. They looked up and saw Phyllis come in.

Billy knew there was nothing he could say to talk Jack out of this. He just warned him that Adam’s fangs were sharp and poisonous. Phyllis walked over and Jack said he was leaving. She said she came to discuss Lily’s offer to buy the hotel with Billy. Jack left. Billy noticed that things had gone south between Jack and Phyllis again. Billy was glad that it wasn’t his fault this time. Phyllis said she’d moved past that. She added that she was going to work with Summer at Marchetti. Billy was surprised Phyllis would be working with Diane.

Phyllis said she and Diane weren’t in the same department. Billy didn’t think Marchetti was big enough for the two of them. She said he underestimated her. He hoped that this would work out, for Jack’s sake. She said she wouldn’t let her daughter down. He thought she could only suppress her feelings for so long until she exploded. She asked why it was that he got to turn his life around and be an upstanding executive, and she couldn’t. He said he liked his colleagues. She said it was unfortunate that he was just working with his buddies and girlfriend. She stated that the Grand Phoenix was a huge moneymaking endeavor; it wasn’t like some podcast. He said his podcast was popular, and he should have her on. She replied that she was all booked up. She didn’t think she could handle Marchetti and running the hotel, and that was why she wanted to talk to Lily. Billy said he’d been confident that Phyllis wouldn’t sell. “That’s how little you know me, Billy,” Phyllis replied. Billy said either Phyllis was a fool, selling her hotel to work with Summer, or she had a plan for Diane. He’d never known Phyllis to be a fool. She said he was right about that. He said she’d made some spectacular mistakes, but she was as savvy as they come. He bet she had a plan to hurt Diane in some way.

Phyllis thought it was annoying that everyone in the town thought she had a nefarious intention. Billy said Phyllis was selling her prized possession out of the blue to go work with her sworn enemy. She said she was going to work with her daughter and helping her attain her vision. He said she was casting herself in a supporting role, but that wasn’t her – she was the queen bee. She said she loved a challenge, and she’d be overseeing the home design division at Marchetti – it was a huge position. He conceded that this sounded like a cool gig. She said she’d risen above her hatred for Diane, a hatred that cost her her relationship with Jack. The sort of happiness she was afraid she’d never get again. “You are definitely up to something,” Billy said.

Phyllis asked why Billy couldn’t believe her heart was in the right place. He asked her to stop the phony denials. He was speaking to her as an ex-lover and semi friend. He asked her to let go of whatever she had planned for Diane. Even if she won, and he thought she would, she’d still lose in the end. She asked what made him think she’d lose. He said there was always collateral damage in the war, and the damage would be Summer. “Summer won’t be near the line of fire Billy… if there was a line of fire, which there is not,” she said. He informed her that Jack offered Adam a job at Jabot, as co-CEO.

Phyllis was alarmed that Adam would be placed in a position of power. She said Adam got an umpteenth chance to redeem himself in Jack’s eyes, just like Diane, but he wasn’t giving Phyllis the same opportunity. Billy said throwing Adam into any mix was a recipe for disaster. Phyllis asked if Billy thought Jack would involve Adam in Marchetti. He didn’t know, but if Adam got involved, he’d take Diane’s side. Phyllis agreed that Adam would side with Diane, and she predicted that Jack would just follow along and give Diane the benefit of the doubt. Billy asked if Phyllis wanted to be the one responsible for throwing oil on the fire. Nikki called Phyllis wanting to meet.

Phyllis went to the ranch. Ashley wasn’t there, because she was out of town on business. Phyllis complained that Ashley was useless. Nikki said Ashley was committed to the plan, but she was concerned about Phyllis’s sabotage idea. Nikki called Phyllis here to get the details on her next move. Phyllis asked if Nikki didn’t trust her. “In a word, no,” Nikki said. Phyllis said she didn’t trust Nikki and Ashley either. Nikki said that the reason she didn’t trust Phyllis was somewhat of a compliment. Nikki was concerned Phyllis might back down, to protect Summer. Nikki was also protective of her kids, but the best way to protect Summer and her family was to get Diane out of town for good. Phyllis agreed. She didn’t appreciate Nikki’s backhanded compliment, especially since she was the only one in this triumvirate that was really doing something. “You have worries, you have concerns. I get it, but until you really contribute, keep your opinions to yourself,” Phyllis said.

Diane’s face lit up when she saw Jack come into Crimson Lights. He was glad he ran into her. He said that he’d been reading the books she bought Harrison about loss, and he could tell they were helpful. He thanked her for the thoughtful gift.

Nikki: Hello.

Victoria: Hi. Um, I’m glad you’re here. I wanted to tell you that we closed the deal on the project in tokyo.

Nikki: Oh, that’s terrific! Congratulations. Why don’t you reward yourself and take the rest of the day off?

Victoria: Well, I would love to do that, but I have way too much work to catch up on.

Nikki: Darling, you always have a lot of work to catch up on. Why don’t you let your co-ceo take you out to society or some other restaurant that’s quieter and we can talk?

Victoria: Is there something in particular that you’d like to discuss?

Nikki: Maybe. I haven’t pushed you to talk about the night that ashland died because I know how traumatic it was for you. But I have brought it up with your father.

Victoria: And?

Nikki: And I still think that there is something more that i don’t know. Whenever I bring it up to him, he dances around the subject. Oh, there is a secret, isn’t there? And I think I know what it is.

Sharon: Okay.

Nick: [ Sighs ] I told vick the truth about what happened to ashland that night. I thought she had a right to know.

Sharon: How did she react?

Nick: Honestly, I think she would have just preferred if i kept my mouth shut. But keeping her in the dark didn’t feel right.

Sharon: Did she already have suspicions about what really happened to ashland?

Nick: I don’t think so. I mean, she went out of town with her kids right after it happened. She’s done a good job, I guess, of just putting it out of her mind, unlike me, who’s been dwelling on it. She hasn’t even been back to her place since that night.

Sharon: Then it must have been a shock to realize what victor did.

Nick: I mean, yes and no. It’s not like she hasn’t dealt with something like this before.

Sharon: Like with jt. We thought he was dead, and we tried to hide the body to make it look like it never happened.

Nick: Vick knows my dad’s first instinct is to protect us no matter what. But now everything’s upside down, and we have to protect him unless he comes clean.

Victor: So, chance, what exactly are you expecting to hear?

Chance: I want you to be straight with me.

Victor: Ah.

Chance: Tell me what really happened that night ashland locke died. ‘Cause he didn’t stumble out of that house all on his own. I think he was carried out and disposed of by someone who thought that was a way to protect nick and victoria.

Victor: Interesting theory.

Chloe: I know that it’s been a busy day so far, but do you have a few minutes to talk? ‘Cause I woke up this morning, synapses firing, sparking with ideas.

Sally: Yeah. Come on in. What inspired this brainstorm?

Chloe: Kevin. So, we were watching a movie based on one of his favorite graphic novels last night and i wake up and he’s not in bed. And then I go downstairs and i find him playing video games based on the movie.

Sally: I am not fully getting it.

Chloe: It’s what we should be doing.

Sally: Turning ourselves into total geeks?

Sally: There is nothing geeky about comic books and superheroes. Everybody loves them. And it’s one of the more profitable…

Adam: We said that we were

not doing anything for new year’s eve.

Sally: Right. And as you can tell by the decor, we are not even acknowledging new year’S. All of the other holidays, sure, but there were no rules about that.

Chloe: We should be using our library of graphic novels to create content for movies and television and turn them into video games.

Sally: Uh-huh.

Adam: You are looking at the new ceo of newman enterprises.

Sally: Oh, my god! You did it! Congratulations!

[ Laughs ]

Adam: And — and I am looking at the very beautiful new ceo of newman media.

Chloe: Conversely, we should be using the video games we created and turn them into movies and graphic novels.

Sally: We will both be very busy in our new positions.

Adam: Well, then we better not waste our time together, not let a moment go to waste.

Chloe: Sally? Did you hear anything I just said?

Sally: Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. And I want to hear more.

[ Chuckles ]

Adam: Hey there.

Jack: Adam. It’s been a while. How are you?

Adam: Oh, I’m hanging in there. I’ve had a few things going on. I’m not sure if you heard.

Jack: Yeah, I was surprised to hear you stepped away from newman enterprises.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Were you really? Because if past predicts future, it probably was inevitable.

Jack: I know there is a long-standing pattern between you and victor and the rest of the newman family that nothing long-term seems to work, but hope springs eternal.

Adam: Maybe for the abbotts, but for me, I think the lesson has finally sunk in this time.

Jack: I’m sorry to hear that. So, what are your plans for the future?

Adam: Uh, I haven’t thought much about it.

Jack: Well, maybe you should. Adam, I know you. When you are not focused on the future, it almost always means you are stewing with resentment, which never leads anywhere good.

With age comes more…

Jack: Please join me for a bite.

Adam: Sure. Well, I’d like the company. And you’re right. I am bitter about the latest rejection from my father. And I’m just mad as hell at myself for not seeing it coming. I just — I thought this time might be different.

Jack: Well, it seems this go-round, you had a major supporter in sally. Is that in part why you got your hopes up?

Chloe: It’s all about synergy and maximizing the value of our intellectual property. Hey. Hey. What’s — what’s going on? Low blood sugar? Not getting enough sleep?

Sally: Sorry. I’m just a little bit distracted.

Chloe: Yeah. Yeah, I — I-I recognize the signs. Having been through this with chelsea, I know exactly what’s going on. But do not worry. I know exactly what to do.

Sally: What’s that?

Chloe: An exorcism. And then we can burn some sage and expunge all of this bad juju that your despicable ex has left behind.

Sally: Okay, I’m not sure that we need to go that far.

Chloe: Well, we obviously have to do something because adam is taking up way too much space in your head. He is sapping all of the energy and inspiration that you should be saving for newman media. And I thought we agreed you weren’t going to let him, much less the memory of him, steal this opportunity from you.

Sally: What if I can’t do this without him? What if I’m in over my head? What if adam was the one that was keeping me afloat this whole time?

Chloe: No. We have been through this. Yes, adam may have gotten you the job, but you are still in that chair because of your determination and brilliance. Nick and victoria recognize that, and they want to see more of it. And so do I. I mean, do you think that i would be wasting my time on this gig if I didn’t think you knew what you were doing? The answer is no. So, it is time to set aside all of this ridiculous insecurity and get back to work. Okay?

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Okay. Thanks.

Sharon: I take it you and victoria agreed not to tell chance about what victor did?

Nick: We actually didn’t have much of an opportunity to discuss how we’re gonna handle chance before he showed up. He did say he doesn’t buy at all the story of ashland making it on his own to his car in a windstorm. He said it’s a lot more likely that dad had ashland’s dead body removed from the premises and then staged the accident.

Sharon: My god. How did you react to that?

Nick: What was I supposed to do? I told him that, you know, it’s just a theory. He’s got no proof that backs it up.

Sharon: Wow. You are in a really difficult position. But you’ve had to make these kinds of decisions before, whether to cover for shady things victor does.

Nick: Victoria, too. The only person new to this game is chance.

Sharon: In a lot of ways, chance is like rey. It’s in his job and his nature to find the truth and expose it, but in order to do so, he needs to put his own wife’s family in jeopardy. How is he supposed to handle that?

Victor: Now, do you have any evidence to back up this supposition?

Chance: Well, I’ve been trying to corroborate everyone’s initial story — that ashland left that house of his own volition — but I just keep coming up empty.

Victor: Hmm.

Chance: There’s no footprints.

Victor: Mm.

Chance: There’s no blood trail.

Victor: Mm.

Chance: There’s no security footage at the gas station where he parked his car. I mean, it’s all blank. I find that strange.

Victor: Wow. Very frustrating, no doubt. I understand. Mm-hmm. But I suggest that, in the absence of clear evidence, you stop filling the void with conjecture.

Chance: I agree.

Victor: Good.

Chance: And that’s why we continued to search…

Victor: Uh-huh.

Chance: …My team and I, and we did find some footage from another location of ashland’s car in motion. Now, it’s a little grainy, taken from a distance, but it looks like there could be more than one person in the car.

Victor: Doesn’t prove a damn thing, does it?

Chance: We also found a cigarette butt on scene that may have belonged to one of your security guards.

Victor: Chance, a cigarette butt could belong to anyone, for heaven’s sake. I mean, why this excessive search for information? I don’t understand it.

Chance: You asked me what my evidence was.

Victor: Yeah.

Chance: And the investigation is how we find the evidence.

Victor: I think you have enough evidence as it is. Ashland locke, that bastard, died in a car accident. Simple as it is. Why do you waste time trying to find out what led up to that? Meaningless. He’s dead. Why don’t you move on to some other investigation?

Moving forward with node-

positive breast cancer

Nick: Chance is gonna keep digging. My dad’s gonna keep denying. Sooner or later, something’s going to have to give. Even if I stay completely out of it, I set this whole thing in motion by getting chance involved in the first place.

Sharon: A man died. Of course you were gonna need to call the authorities. It still haunts me to this day that we didn’t do that with jt. And I can’t believe that victor, after what he experienced with victoria and nikki at that time, he didn’t learn his lesson.

Nick: I can. His protective nature is in his dna. He can’t help himself. I guess there’s no point in being mad at him for him being who he is.

Sharon: Are you really trying to tell me that you’re not angry with him anymore?

Nick: Oh, no, I’m mad. I was so close to telling chance what my father did. Ugh, I don’t — ugh. I’m just — I don’t know. I’m — I’m a mess right now. I don’t know…

Sharon: Look, that’s totally understandable, but I don’t think that your feelings have much to do with what victor did or didn’t do. I think you’re having a normal, conscientious reaction to what you did.

Chance: There’s no such thing as too much information. That’s not the problem here. I’m not gonna stop. I will not give up until i know —

Victor: I don’t give a damn, chance, whether you’re gonna stop or not. That’s all I have to say.

Nikki: So, victor’s men removed ashland’s body, put it in his car, and crashed it into the ravine?

Victoria: Yes.

Nikki: I knew it. I knew your father was involved. And it’s so much like what he did for adam when he was a child.

Victoria: Yes, mother, but nicholas and I — we are not children. I know he acted out of love. I know that, but he didn’t need to go to this extreme. Oh, god, let’s just get into it later. Right now, we need to get through this investigation.

Nikki: Do you think the police have doubts about how ashland died?

Victoria: Chance was here talking to me and nicholas earlier. Yeah, he was voicing his suspicions that somebody, possibly dad, moved the body, but thankfully he doesn’t have much in the way of evidence. However, it was still an incredibly awkward conversation, to say the least, and we acted indignant that he would even suggest such a thing. But if the truth does come out, mom, we will have damaged our own credibility.

Nikki: Oh, my god, chance was at the ranch when I left. He’s probably interrogating victor about his suspicions right now. I’m sure your father held his own, but I’ve got to get home.

[ Door opens ]

[ Door closes ]

Adam: It is undeniable that sally is a relentless optimist. And I may have got a little caught up in her unrealistic expectations, but I think deep down I knew that this stint at newman was gonna end the same way all the other ones have — just in a smoking pile of ash.

Jack: So, what’s really going on? Why do you keep going back?

Adam: I don’t know. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment. Maybe some masochistic part of my brain thinks I deserve to keep paying the price for what i did as a kid.

Jack: I get that you feel you have to earn back your father’s respect and admiration. I just think that’s too pat an explanation.

Adam: Alright, dr. Abbott, you tell me — why do I keep putting myself in this position?

Jack: Maybe you’re not looking for forgiveness. Maybe you’re looking to forgive.

Sally: He loves the comic book? Yeah. I don’t know why I thought he would. I just had a feeling. Okay, so, newman media owns the movie and tv rights, and we think your client would be perfect for the lead in a film based off of it — and not just that. I mean, we are talking sequels, tv spin-offs, video games, the whole shebang. It’s going to be huge. Great. Wonderful. We will have our lawyers reach out to you to negotiate a deal asap. Great. Talk soon. Bye.

Chloe: That sounded like it went well.

Sally: Could not have gone better.

[ Chuckles ]

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: You’re right. This is more about me than it is my dad.

[ Sighs ] I think what’s weighing on me the most is that I let my anger take control of me. I thought I’d done a pretty good job over the years of keeping a handle on that. I was so mad. Ashland pushed me too far. When I realized what I had done, I…

Sharon: You know what? You don’t have to explain. I was there the night that we thought that nikki killed jt. She was protecting her daughter’s life. She was perfectly in the right, but it was still devastating to everyone who witnessed it.

Nick: Yeah, I… I don’t think I ever completely understood what you all went through that night until right now.

Sharon: Our first instinct was exactly what victor’s was — to cover up what happened. So I can understand if victoria doesn’t want to judge him for that. But our attempt at a cover-up backfired spectacularly. I’m only hoping that the same won’t be true in this case.

Chance: I am a father now, too, so I understand what it means to be fiercely protective of your child. I get that. And I get why you might have felt compelled to do whatever was necessary to protect your children. But they’re not in danger anymore. And if you continue to stonewall this case, all the risk is gonna be on you.

Victor: Thank you for your kind concern, chance. But don’t you worry about me, okay? I have nothing to atone for.

Chance: As much as I admire you…

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Chance: …And respect you and respect the fact that we are family, I’m not gonna back off.

Victor: I know you won’T. Now, if I were you, I’d go home to my beautiful wife and my beautiful kid. Just know that ashland locke is dead. He’s no longer a danger to anyone. That should make you sleep easy.

Adam: Look, I have no doubt that letting go of whatever anger and rage I still have would be therapeutic. But it’s easier said than done ’cause I’m afraid at this point he is firmly entrenched in my psyche as the enemy.

Jack: There was a time i talked about victor in exactly the same way. He was my nemesis. I wanted more than anything to bring him down. But I learned from painful experience that I was better off channeling my energies towards something positive. Look, adam, your destiny is not predetermined. You could use this as a turning point, a chance to reinvent yourself.

Adam: I feel like I have been reinventing myself my entire life, jack, first as the perfect son who didn’t want to cause his mother any trouble, then as the successful harvard grad with a bright future, then later, after locking horns with victor, as the anti-newman.

Adam: You’re forgetting spider, the man of mystery from vegas. Okay, I don’t mean to make light of your situation. All I’m suggesting is… maybe it’s time to let that go, to just forget about it, just be adam newman.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Jack: Look, you have a brilliant business mind, an incredible work ethic. There are so many opportunities for you to prove yourself to the world. Matter of fact, I can think of one off the top of my head.

Adam: Hmm?

Jack: Come work with me at jabot.

Why hide your skin

“The young and the restless”

will continue. (Vo) it’s yoooopllllaaaitiimmeee!!!

Sharon: I think you should take a break from all this. Just take your mind off of it, even if it’s just for a little while.

Nick: [ Scoffs, sighs ] I mean, it sounds nice, but i don’t think that’s gonna be possible.

Sharon: Well, I’m having dinner with noah and allie later on. You’re welcome to join us. It might be good for you. And they’re so cute together. You haven’t had a chance to get to know allie because you’ve been so focused on newman and ashland.

Nick: Are those two getting serious?

Sharon: I don’t know. They haven’t been dating that long, but I haven’t seen noah this lit up since he came home from london. And he did confide in me that he feels more relaxed and comfortable around her than anyone else. So…I hope so. Um, I think it would be good for him.

Nick: Yeah, I agree. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen noah in a happy, healthy relationship. And allie seems great.

Adam: I, uh, appreciate you trying to boost my spirits, jack, but you’re kidding about the job offer.

Jack: No. I am serious. It only occurred to me now, but you would be a perfect fit at jabot. You know more than I do about social trends and celebrity culture ’cause of your work at newman media. No one I know is better at strategy or corporate game theory.

Adam: I appreciate the compliment, but, um — I don’t know how to say this, but I’m a little wary of family companies because I’ve been thrown over one too many times by the boss’s son or daughter, jack.

Jack: And that would not be an issue at jabot. Kyle has just stepped away from his position as co-ceo so he can focus on marchetti, focus on working with his wife, summer, who, by the way, is a newman who has taken refuge at jabot because she didn’t want to deal with all the family drama at newman enterprises.

Adam: Well, how do you think summer and kyle would feel about me coming on board?

Jack: They just hired diane jenkins, arguably the least popular person in all of genoa city. Your notoriety would pale by comparison.

Adam: And what is she doing for the company?

Jack: It’s a pr job. It’s nothing on the executive level, just something to keep her out of trouble. There’s no reason your paths would have to cross, if that’s the issue.

Adam: No. It wouldn’t be.

Jack: Adam, the more I think about this, the more I like this idea.

Sally: I feel good about the moves we’re making in the entertainment divisions. Those were some really great ideas.

Chloe: Well, thank you for putting it into motion.

Sally: Now, let’s talk about the news division. I have some thoughts.

Chloe: Okay, shoot.

Sally: Okay. I would love to beef up our investigative-reporting capacity, be the first to the gate on late-breaking scoops. That is how we gain attention and build a reputation as a serious player. And I also think that we should be directing more resources to the reporters who show that they can have that kind of hustle and access.

Chloe: Makes total sense. I’m on board with that.

Sally: Okay, so, in that vein, I have been rethinking our approach to the whole ashland locke story.

Chloe: Well, that’s kind of tricky, with the newmans being in the center of the story. And they own the company that we work for, and we still are on probationary status.

Sally: No, we are not.

Chloe: What? When did that happen?

Sally: More or less when you told me that nick punched ashland the night that he died. Afterward, I spoke with nick and told him what I knew, without telling him that you were my source. And I highly doubt that they are gonna cut us loose when we have that little nugget in our back pocket.

[ Knock on door ]

Chance: Hey. I’m sorry to interrupt. I, uh — I think I left my phone here.

Victoria: Yes. Yes, you did. But I expected that you would come back for it.

Chance: Thank you.

Victoria: So, how did things go with my father? My mother told me that you went to the ranch to talk to him.

Chance: Well, I gave him every opportunity to be forthcoming, but essentially he took the fifth.

Victoria: Mm. That’s a very interesting way of putting it. The implication is that you’ve already made an assumption of guilt.

Chance: I mean, come on, victoria. We both have a pretty good idea of what happened that night.

Victoria: No, no. You have your theory. I really don’t see the point running around making all of these accusations without any proof to back them up. Unless your expectation is that we’re all gonna crack under the pressure.

Chance: You? Psch. Never.

[ Bag thuds ]

Victor: Hi, my baby. What a surprise. I thought you were going to the office after the meeting.

Nikki: Yes, I did and, uh, I spoke with victoria and that conversation led me back here.

Victor: Yeah. And?

Nikki: I was hoping that she would be more straightforward with me about what happened the night that ashland died. And she was.

Victor: Mm. Well, what do you mean?

Nikki: Victor, you know exactly what I mean. You had your security team move ashland’s body and make it look like he died of a car crash. Victoria learned that from nicholas when she got back from her trip.

Victor: Hmm. Well, now you understand why i didn’t want to drag you and victoria into that story.

Nikki: Yes, I can because i know you better than anyone on the planet and I know you will stop at nothing to protect your children. But now I have a question. When will you learn that I have your back? Victor, you should have told me the truth from the very beginning.

Victor: Okay. You’re right.

Nikki: So…what did chance want to talk about?

Chloe: Please… don’t tell me that you threatened the newmans.

Sally: No, of course not. I am incredibly grateful to nick and victoria for this opportunity, and they seem just as happy with me.

Chloe: Because you’re keeping what you know about ashland out of the news coverage.

Sally: That gratitude translates to a certain amount of job security.

Chloe: So if our job security depends on your discretion, you’re still talking about digging deeper into what happened the night that ashland died?

Sally: The family has to expect that someone, somewhere eventually is going to break this story, in spite of their best efforts to keep quiet. They need to be prepared, and we should be prepared with an article that describes exactly what happened in vivid detail.

Chloe: Okay. You mean just keeping it on file, not actually putting it out there without the newmans’ approval?

Sally: Right. Yes. And we can make sure that the article is sympathetic to their point of view. So I was wondering, could you find out if there’s anything new going on in the investigation from kevin?

Chloe: That’s — that’s a really big ask. I don’t want to do anything that would ever put his job at risk.

Sally: I understand. Well, how well do you know chance, exactly?

Chloe: Uh… we were engaged like a million years ago.

Sally: Whoa.

[ Scoffs ] I did not expect that.

Chloe: And we are fine now. We haven’t spoken to each other in a really long time. But even if we were bffs, he would never tell me anything. He is a straight arrow. I mean, he would never leak any information about an ongoing investigation to the press.

Sally: All right. But there has to be another way. ‘Cause there are still missing pieces to the puzzle, and we’re gonna find it.

Jack: I’m not gonna push you to make a decision about my offer right now, but I sincerely hope you will consider it. I was just talking to my sister traci about how I don’t want to get so involved in work again that I miss seeing my grandson grow up. I just need someone to help me steer the ship.

Adam: I promise that I will give it some serious thought. But whatever I decide, it means a lot to me, jack, that he would make me that offer to begin with.

Billy: Don’t tell me you’re making a deal with the devil, jack.

Adam: Look who it is — the town busybody, butting in where he’s not invited.

Billy: Oh, no. Came by to say hi to my brother.

Adam: I’m surprised you could tear yourself away from your recording studio since you so love the sound of your own voice.

Billy: Yes, that’s right. I do have two jobs. And you have none?

Adam: I will be in touch soon, jack.

Billy: What the hell was that all about?

Trelegy for copd.

Jack: I offered adam a job at jabot.

Billy: I’m sorry. What?

Jack: I could use someone to replace kyle now that he’s moved over to marchetti.

Billy: I can’t actually believe what I’m hearing here. I mean, I know you have a soft spot for adam, but are you unaware of his actions? Do you know how hard he’s been trying to undermine victoria as the C.E.O. Of newman? That’s not ancient history, jack. That is very recent.

Jack: I think we would all agree that newman is not a good environment for adam. He could use a fresh start.

Billy: No, he can’t be trusted in any capacity.

Jack: You and I see things differently. Adam lashes out when he feels he’s being attacked. That is not what I’m doing. In fact, I’m doing the opposite. I’m offering him a lifeline at a time he seems to need one.

Billy: What you are doing, jack, is making a huge mistake.

Jack: Duly noted. Thank you. Billy, you published an article about a monster. You chose not to look beyond that at all. I did. I saw a human being behind all that bitterness and resentment. You might be wise to take a second look yourself.

Victoria: My husband. He was a very charming and extremely intelligent and manipulative man. He was used to things going his way, but when they didn’t, he couldn’t handle it, and he lost his grip. If nicholas hadn’t shown up that night, I would have been in some serious trouble.

Chance: I don’t doubt that.

Victoria: And yet… I just don’t understand why you’re wasting so much of your time and energy investigating a man that no one is going to miss. I mean, I promise you, he’s not worth it.

Chance: You see, that’s not really how all this works. I don’t prejudge who is or isn’t worth it before I go to work and start looking for answers. I’m not doing this for ashland. I hope you know that. It’s more for rey. And since he died, I’ve been trying to close every case the way that he would close it. I want to live up to his standards, which were extremely high.

Victoria: That is the highest compliment that you could pay rey. But honestly —

Chance: I get it. I know that’s a pretty high-minded approach in the world that we live in. But here’s the thing. We can create this world that we live in every day by the choices that we make.

Victoria: Until someone like ashland comes along and strips you of any belief that you have in truth and honesty.

Victor: What did chance want? Well, let me just say that he didn’t like the answers I gave him.

Nikki: Because they weren’t really answers. Been there.

Victor: Sweetheart, do you realize how much I wanted to… tell you all about this? I didn’t want to drag you into this dirty business.

Nikki: I — I understand that. I mean, I’ve done the same, more than once, to protect you. And it’s always a mistake. We should always rely on each other. We’re stronger together.

Victor: You have no argument from me on that, okay? Right now is the most important time for us to stick together as a family.

Sharon: Are you sure you don’t want to join us for dinner?

Nick: I appreciate it. I just don’t think I’m gonna be able to shake this mood, and I don’t want noah or allie to think my scowl has anything to do with her. So I think I’m just gonna go for a run or maybe watch some cartoons — with christian.

Sharon: Mm-hmm. Well, those both sound like really good ideas, but try to keep in mind what I said before. It was victor’s choice to do what he did about ashland. You are not responsible.

Nick: I’m trying hard to get there.

Recap written by Christine

Victoria closed a deal, and Nikki wanted to take her to Society for a reward. When Victoria wasn’t receptive, Nikki pushed the issue, because she wanted to leave the office and talk about Ashland’s death. Nikki had the feeling that Victor had a secret about Ashland. Victoria told Nikki the truth about Victor having his men stage the car accident. Nikki wasn’t surprised, since this was so similar to what Victor did for Adam when he was a child. Victoria said she and Nick weren’t kids, and Victor didn’t have to go to this extreme. Victoria said Chance was suspicious, but thankfully he didn’t have much in the way of evidence. Victoria said she and Nick covered, but if the truth came out, they would have damaged their credibility. Nikki got worried because Chance was at the ranch when she left. She was sure Victor held his own, but she had to get home now.

Nick met Sharon at Crimson Lights. He said he told Victoria the truth about what happened to Ashland. He thought she would rather he’d kept his mouth shut, but he thought she had the right to know. He didn’t think Victoria suspected there was a cover up until he told her the truth. Sharon guessed Victoria was shocked to find out what Victor did. Nick said yes and no – Victoria had dealt with something like this before. Sharon knew Nick meant the time she, Victoria and others tried to hide JT’s body. Nick said Victor’s first instinct was to protect them, but now they had to protect him, unless he came clean.

Nick said that Chance didn’t buy the cover story about Ashland at all – he thought Victor had Ashland’s body removed. Sharon said Nick was in a difficult position, but it wasn’t the first time he had to decide whether or not to cover up Victor’s shady choices. Nick said Victoria had been in that position too, and the only one new to this was Chance. Sharon thought Chance was a lot like Rey, in that it was his job and in his nature to find and expose the truth, but in order to do so, he had to put his own wife’s family in jeopardy.

Nick predicted Chance was going to keep digging, and Victor was going to keep denying, and sooner or later, something was going to have to give. Nick admitted he’d he set this whole thing in motion by calling Chance that night. Sharon thought Nick was right to call Chance. She wished they’d contacted the authorities the night JT seemingly died. She couldn’t believe Victor didn’t learn his lesson from what Victoria and Nikki went through with JT. Nick said Victor couldn’t help being protective, and there was no point at being mad at him for who he was. She asked if he wasn’t angry with Victor anymore. Nick was mad, and he’d come close to telling Chance the real story. He just didn’t know what to do. She thought he was having a normal conscientious reaction to what he did and that this wasn’t completely about Victor.

Nick admitted Sharon was right – this was more about him than it was about his dad. Nick was upset he let his anger get the best of him. He said Ashland pushed him too far. Sharon understood. She was there the right Nikki thought she killed JT. According to Sharon, Nikki had been completely in the right, but it was still devastating for everyone to watch. Nick finally understood what they all went through that night. Sharon said their first instinct was to cover up JT’s death, but it backfired spectacularly. She hoped history wouldn’t repeat itself. Sharon thought Nick should take a break from all this, even if it was only for a little while. He didn’t think that would be possible.

Sharon invited Nick to go to dinner with her, Noah and Allie. He asked if Noah and Allie were getting serious. Sharon hoped so, because she thought it’d be good for Noah. He agreed. He said it’d been a long time since they’d seen Noah in a healthy happy relationship, and Allie seemed great. Nick declined the invitation. He didn’t think he’d be able to shake his scowl, and he didn’t want Noah or Allie thinking that it had something to do with Allie. He said he’d go for a run, and maybe watch cartoons with Christian. She reiterated that he wasn’t responsible for Victor’s choice.

At the Ranch, Chance laid out his theory that Ashland died at Victoria’s house, and someone disposed of the body to protect her and Nick. Victor asked if Chance had any proof to back up his supposition. Chance tried to corroborate everyone’s initial story, that Ashland left the house of his own volition, but there was no evidence of that. Chance found that strange. Victor told Chance not to fill the holes with conjecture. Chance said there was footage of Ashland’s car, and it looked like there could be more than one person in the car. They also found a cigarette butt that may have belonged to one of Victor’s security guards. Victor dismissed those things. Victor felt like Chance was conducting an excessive search for information. He said Ashland died in a car accident, and the events that lead up to it weren’t important.

Chance wasn’t going to drop the investigation. He took his job seriously. Victor admired Chance’s sense of duty, but he thought the effort would be better spent elsewhere. Chance didn’t think Ashland would agree. Victor didn’t think Ashland’s feelings mattered, since he was dead. Victor contended that Ashland realized he was a fraud, and he decided to drive into a ravine. Chance said Victor covered up a fatal accident in the past involving one of his children. Victor said the incident with Adam happened decades ago. Victor said the more information you had about the case, the more it obscured the truth. Chance didn’t agree, and he said he wasn’t going to stop investigating. Victor didn’t give a damn. He’d said all he had to say.

As a father, Chance understood the instinct to be fiercely protective of your children, but Victor’s kids weren’t in danger anymore. Chance said Victor was taking a risk by stonewalling the case. Victor claimed he had nothing to atone for. Chance admired Victor and respected that they were family, but he wasn’t going to back off. Victor knew. He told Chance to go home to his beautiful wife and son and sleep easy knowing Ashland was dead and not a danger to anyone.

Chance went back to Victoria’s office because he left his phone there the last time he was there. She asked how things went with her father. He said Victor essentially took the fifth. Victoria said it was like Chance already made the assumption of guilt. Chance thought they both had a pretty good idea what happened that night. She said he had a theory, and she saw no point in him running around making these accusations unless he was assuming they were going to crack under the pressure. “You? Never,” he replied.

Victoria said Ashland was charming, intelligent and manipulative, and he couldn’t handle it when things didn’t go his way. She said she would’ve been in serious trouble if Nick didn’t show up that night. Chance didn’t doubt that. She didn’t understand why he was wasting time and energy investigating a man no one would miss – Ashland wasn’t worth it. Chance didn’t prejudge who was worth it. He wasn’t doing this for Ashland, he was doing this for Rey. He was trying to live up to Rey’s extremely high standards. He knew that was a high minded approach to the world they lived in, but they created the world they lived in by the choices they made. Victoria said someone like Ashland came along and stripped people of any notions they had of things like truth and honesty.

Nikki went home and told Victor that Victoria had been forthcoming with her about about the night Ashland died. Victor pretended not to know what Nikki meant. “Victor, you know exactly what I mean. You had your security team move Ashland’s body and make it look like he died in a car crash,” Nikki said. Victor assumed Nikki now understood why he didn’t want to drag her and Victoria into this. She did understand, but she wondered when he’d understand that she had his back. She said he should’ve told her the truth from the beginning. He admitted she was right. She asked what Chance said.

Victor said Chance didn’t like his answers. Victor had wanted to tell Nikki the truth, but he didn’t want to drag her into this. She said she’d done the same thing to protect him, but it was always a mistake – they should rely on each other because they were stronger together. He agreed. He said it was important for them to stick together as a family.

At Newman Media, Chloe came to Sally with a business idea inspired by Kevin’s love for superhero movies and video games. The subject caused Sally to zone out and flash back to the night she and Adam watched movies on New Year’s Eve. She also flashed to other happier times with her ex, like him promoting her to her current position. Chloe noticed Sally wasn’t listening and called her out. Chloe recognized the signs, thanks to her time with Chelsea. She said they needed an exorcism to get Sally’s mind off Adam. Chloe thought Sally was devoting energy to Adam that she should be putting into Newman Media. Sally worried that she couldn’t do this job without Adam. Chloe said Adam may have gotten Sally the job, but Nick and Victoria kept her in the chair because of her determination and brilliance. Chloe said she wouldn’t have taken this job if she didn’t think Sally knew what she was doing. The pep talk worked, and Sally appreciated it.

Sally made arrangements for Newman Media to make a movie, video game and TV show based off a comic book. The call ended, and Sally was triumphant. Chloe smiled because Sally had just been doubting herself a minute ago. Sally marveled at how much influence this company was going to have over the public – so much more than when she and Chloe were working in fashion. Sally told Chloe that her ideas for the entertainment division were really great. Sally moved on to the news division and said she wanted to beef up their reporting department. Chloe was on board with that. Sally wanted to change their approach to the Ashland story. Chloe was afraid that would endanger their jobs, since they were on probationary status with the Newmans. Sally said their probationary status ended when she informed Nick that she knew he punched Ashland the night he died. Sally didn’t think the Newmans would cut her and Chloe loose now that they had this little nugget of information.

Chloe hoped Sally didn’t threaten Nick. Sally said of course she didn’t. Sally was grateful to Nick and Victoria for the opportunity. She assumed they were grateful she kept what she knew about Ashland out of the news, and that gave her and Chloe a certain amount of job security. Chloe didn’t understand why Sally was going to keep digging into the story, then. Sally figured that someone was going to break the story at some point, and when that happened, she wanted Newman Media to be prepared with a story about exactly what occurred that night, in vivid detail. Sally just wanted to keep the article on file, not publish it unless someone else published one first. She said they’d make sure the article was sympathetic to the Newmans’ point of view. Sally asked Chloe to ask Kevin for an update on the investigation. Chloe didn’t want to do anything that would put his job at risk. Sally understood. She asked how well Chloe knew Chance. Chloe said she and Chance were engaged a million years ago, but they hadn’t talked in a long time, and even if they had, he’d never leak anything about an ongoing investigation to the press. Sally said there had to be another way for the to get the rest of the pieces of the puzzle.

Adam went to Society and approached Jack. He wasn’t sure if Jack heard what was going on in his life. Jack had heard about Adam stepping away from Newman Enterprises, and he found it surprising. Adam asked if Jack was really surprised, because if past predicted the future, it was probably inevitable. Jack knew things between Adam, Victor and the rest of the family things didn’t work out long term in the past, but there was always hope. Adam had finally given up on that. Jack asked about Adam’s plans for the future. Adam didn’t have any. Jack said when Adam wasn’t focused on the future, he was almost always stewing with resentment, and that always ended badly.

Adam admitted he was bitter about Victor’s latest rejection. He was also mad at himself for not seeing it coming. Jack wondered if Adam had been more hopeful because of Sally’s support. Adam admitted he may have gotten caught up in Sally’s relentless optimism, but deep down, he knew this stint with Newman Enterprises would end the way it always did – in a smoking pile of ash. Jack asked why Adam kept going back. Adam said some part of him might keep seeking punishment for what he’d done as a kid. Jack understood that Adam thought eh had to earn back Victor’s respect and admiration, but he thought that was too pat an answer. “Maybe you’re not looking for forgiveness. Maybe you’re looking to forgive,” Jack theorized.

Adam knew that letting go of the anger and rage he felt for Victor would be therapeutic, but it was easier said than done. Adam said his psyche saw Victor as the enemy. Jack used to see Victor as a nemesis, but he learned from painful experience it was better to channel his energy as something positive. Jack said Adam could reinvent himself. Adam said he’d been reinventing himself his whole life, first as the perfect son to his mother, then as the Harvard Business school graduate, then as the anti-Newman. Jack said Adam forgot Spider, the man of mystery from Vegas. Jack thought it could be time for Adam to let all of that go and just be Adam. Jack thought Adam was a brilliant hard worker. He offered him a job at Jabot.

Once Adam found out Jack wasn’t just joking, he said he was a little wary of family companies because he’d been thrown over too many times by the boss’s son or daughter. Jack said it wouldn’t be an issue at Jabot, because Kyle stepped away to work at Marchetti with his wife. He noted that Summer was a Newman who took refuge at Jabot to avoid the family drama at Newman Enterprises. Adam asked what Kyle and Summer would think of this. Jack said they’d just hired Diane Jenkins, arguably the most unpopular person in Genoa City. Adam asked about Diane’s role. Jack said she was in PR, and her path wouldn’t cross Adam’s, if that was an issue. Adam said it wouldn’t be.

Jack didn’t want to get so involved in work that he’d miss out on watching Harrison grow up. He needed someone to help him steer the ship. Adam needed to think about it, but it meant a lot to him that Jack offered him this job. Billy walked up and saw Jack and Adam shake hands. Billy commented on Jack making a deal with the devil. Adam said Billy was intruding. Billy stated that he wanted to say hello to his brother. Adam made a comment about Billy’s podcast and him loving the sound of his own voice. Billy said yes, he had two jobs, and Adam had zero. Adam left. Billy asked Jack what the hell was going on.

Billy was shocked and disapproving about Jack offering Adam a job. Billy said Adam tried to undermine Victoria as a CEO. Jack said Adam could use a fresh start. Billy said Adam couldn’t be trusted. Jack felt he was offering Adam a lifeline when he needed one. Jack said Billy published an article about a monster, and he didn’t look beneath the surface. Jack saw a human behind all the bitterness and resentment, and he thought Billy might be wise to take a second look too.

Adam tried to go into Crimson Lights, but the door was still locked because of Nick and Sharon having a private chat inside. Adam looked in the window and saw them together.

Phyllis: Hey.

Diane: Hi.

Phyllis: Oh, good on you, keeping your workouts in.

Diane: No. You’re right. I do need to stay fit for Harrison’s sake. He’s needed extra attention from his Dee-Dee after the shock of Ashland’s death. It’s been really hard for him to process.

Phyllis: Oh, yeah.

Diane: Yeah.

Phyllis: It’s really hard for children to deal with grief. That’s why all of us as parents — we make sure that we’re there for them to prevent them from any unnecessary trauma.

Diane: Hmm.

Phyllis: Mm. But Kyle and summer — they’re amazing.

Diane: Oh, yeah. They’re excellent parents. You know what? I-I better get to it. I’m on a gym break from my job at Marchetti. I have to tell you, it is such an invigorating environment, and working with my son is incredible. You know what, Phyllis? My new life in Genoa City is better than I could have ever dreamed.

Phyllis: Ah. You know, it’s funny because, from my vantage point, it seems like anything is possible. I’m starting to feel like the world is my oyster. Do you know what I mean? Like something is about to change that’s gonna be spectacular.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Oh, it’s Summer. How funny. Oh, she has a proposition for me. I need to talk to her. Toodles.

Nikki: Oh, how adorable were johnny and katie heading off for their ride?

Victor: Well, I think being at home agrees with them.

Nikki: If I didn’t have meetings in town, I would have joined them.

Victor: I got to tell you, I’m happy that victoria decided to come live with us for a while. I love hearing the kids run around, play around, have all the noise they make.

Nikki: Yeah. They do seem a little subdued, though, which is perfectly normal. No matter what we thought of ashland, he was their stepfather.

Victor: Oh, sweetheart. Having that bastard gone forever is something we shouldn’t mourn, you know?

Nikki: Now, the way you say that…

Victor: Say what?

Nikki: I don’t know. You just seem very pleased with yourself.

Victor: What, that ashland locke is gone? Makes me very happy.

Nikki: It’s actually more than that. It’s more like triumph.

Victor: I think you’re imagining things.

Nikki: Well, then why is it every time ashland’s name is brought up, you seem to be taking credit for his demise?

Victoria: Oh. Chance.

Chance: Victoria.

Victoria: How long have you been waiting outside?

Chance: I just arrived. Why do you look so upset?

Victoria: Uh…a deal that i thought I had in the bag suddenly isn’t, so I was headed out to handle it. So, if you’ll excuse me.

Chance: I’m glad I caught you, since you weren’t around yesterday. I’d like to talk to you a little bit more about ashland’s death.

Nick: What now? How many times do we have to go over this?

Chance: As many times as it takes to get to the bottom of what really happened.

Jack: Come on. Come on. Yes! Yes!

Traci: Harrison!

Jack: Way to go, buddy! Did you see him just score that goal?

Traci: I did! Oh, my gosh, he’s a natural athlete.

[ Both laugh ]

Jack: He’s pretty good at pee-wee soccer, I’ll tell you that. You know, I’ve given some thought to, uh, coaching.

Traci: Are you serious?

Jack: You think I can’t keep up?

Traci: I think you’re gonna run these children ragged.

Jack: Yeah, that’s more like it.

Traci: [ Laughs ] So, how’s that gonna work? You know, I know that you’re alone at the top now, right? You were able to take on that responsibility so that kyle could move over to marchetti. So, how’s this working, you spending more time with your grandson than behind your desk?

Jack: Are you accusing me of neglecting the family business?

Kyle: Thank you. Two coffees, please.

Summer: God. Poor harrison. Do you think that he’s beginning to understand?

Kyle: That he’ll never see father again? I think it’ll take some time to sink in.

Summer: Yeah, you’re probably right about that.

Kyle: I’m just glad my mother and dad are around. They both love spending time with him.

Summer: It is a relief to know that he’s being well taken care of when we can’t be with him ourselves, especially right now.

Kyle: Yeah. Work’s been a bit crazy.

Summer: Actually, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about a new hire.

Kyle: What job are you referring to?

Summer: The new executive position overseeing marchetti home.

Kyle: Has the headhunter come up with a candidate yet?

Summer: Not exactly.

Kyle: Hmm. Who do you have in mind?

Summer: My mom.

Phyllis: Hey.

Diane: Hi.

Phyllis: Oh, good on you, keeping your workouts in.

Victor: My baby, with all due respect, I think that’s utter nonsense, alright? It had nothing to do with ashland locke’s demise. He’s responsible for that.

Nikki: His death would seem to be the result of a great many poor choices.

Victor: I’m glad he’s gone. So, as far as I’m concerned, he is where he should be, where i always thought he would be.

Nikki: And newman is stronger than ever thanks to the merger with ashland’s company.

Victor: Yeah. And don’t forget that bastard tried to take everything away om me, okay? Everything. Don’t forget that. He’s exactly where he belongs to be — on a cold slab in a damn morgue, waiting for a pauper’s burial.

Victoria: What makes you think there’s anything to get to the bottom of?

[ Door closes ]

Chance: Something about ashland’s death just — it didn’t sit right with me. And I believe you two feel the same way. That’s why I continue to dig. So, victoria, you — you called me that night because you thought ashland was dead on your living room floor. And now you two step outside. You clear your heads. You’re stunned to come back inside and find him gone, right? So, I’m here to just follow up on all this confusion. I mean, you were convinced that he was in no shape to get up and leave, let alone make it to his car and drive off, right?

Victoria: Look, we have been through all of this before. There’s no other conclusion, unless you’ve come up with some other evidence.

Chance: I have. Two separate eyewitnesses spotted a vehicle matching the description of ashland’s rental car at a gas station across the street from your south end of the property.

Nick: Well, that makes sense. If it was his car, it’s consistent with what we know happened.

Victoria: So, what? So, you believe you know where ashland parked his car. How does that change anything?

Chance: Well, I don’t want to get ahead of all the facts here. I just want to confirm your version of the story so I can write my final report.

Victoria: Okay. And?

Chance: Well, I just came from your house, where I walked the distance from your back door to that gas station. It’s over half a mile. Thick woods. Then you add in the intense wind that was blowing that night. I tell you, it just seems tough for someone weak from head trauma.

Victoria: After the violent encounter that we had, I’m sure he was full of adrenaline. I know that nicholas and I were.

Chance: Look… I would feel so much better if i could just put this thing to rest and prove that ashland walked to that gas station. But right now…I can’T.

Kyle: Your mother working at marchetti alongside my mother? Do you seriously think that’s a wise idea?

Summer: She made a pretty good case for it.

Kyle: You’ve been trying to keep the peace. This is like handing phyllis a grenade and pulling the pin.

Summer: Look, I know that their positions would require some overlap, but maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe working together will force them to be on their best behavior.

Kyle: Babe, as much as I love your optimism —

Summer: Just hear me out. I wasn’t sure about this at first, either, but mom really regrets turning down that marketing position that i offered her, and now she wants to join our team.

Kyle: Why would she want to do this now when she didn’t before?

Summer: Well, the last position was in milan. Now it’s in genoa city. It’s a lot different.

Kyle: Well, what about her hotel?

Summer: She says that the place practically runs itself and she’s ready for a change. Plus, she’s recently gotten a great offer to sell it.

Kyle: Really?

Summer: Yeah. Somebody looking to acquire a high-end hotel. It’s actually what got me thinking about her for this position.

Kyle: I’m not seeing the connection between consumer products and hospitality.

Summer: Babe, my mom is a talented businesswoman. She built the grand phoenix into a well-known luxury lifestyle brand. She oversaw all of the decorating. She has a great eye for design, and she has exquisite taste. I mean, she has more than proven her creative abilities with programs like escape club.

Kyle: Yeah, I hadn’t thought about it from that angle. I… I guess she’s qualified.

Summer: And best of all, this would give us an opportunity to work together in a field that we both love. Plus, it’s not like hiring my mom is an act of charity. She’s gonna work her tail off, and she brings an enormous amount to the table.

Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Summer: Look, I get it. This could be the worst idea in the world.

Kyle: Or…it could wind up being one of the best.

Moving forward with node-

positive breast cancer

Summer: Wow. So, I convinced you that we should hire my mom?

Kyle: You’re right. Phyllis could be an asset. Her experience is legit, and she does have talent. But there would have to be a condition to any offer we make.

Summer: Go on.

Kyle: We want to keep phyllis from becoming a liability. That’s why I like your plan. If phyllis is working side by side with us, we can keep an eye on her, see if her real agenda is to cause trouble with my mom. Any problems, she’s out the door.

Summer: I don’t want to hire her under false pretenses, though, offer her a job just to spy on her, especially not in a role as important as this one.

Kyle: No, we won’t mislead her. We’ll tell her the truth — that we don’t trust her when it comes to my mom. That way, she’ll be on notice right from the get-go and she gets what she claims to want — to work with you. But she will have to agree to stay away from my mom unless they need to collaborate.

Summer: So, what about if, when you tell diane that my mom’s coming on board, you give her the exact same message, let her know that, effective immediately, we have a zero-tolerance policy for incivility at marchetti. That way, if she tries to beat my mom or make her look bad, out she goes. And we can let them both know that we’ve given them each identical warnings.

Kyle: Hmm. Deal.

Traci: [ Laughs ] No, I’m not suggesting that you’re slacking off. I’m just wondering how that’s gonna work, you know, spending all of this time with your grandson.

Jack: My executive team knows they can get a hold of me by cell any time they want. And, yes, I have made harrison a priority.

Traci: Yes! That’s it!

Jack: Oh, no.

Traci: Two! Two for our boy!

Jack: Did I miss a goal?

Traci: Harrison, great job, buddy!

[ Laughs ] I think we have a future professional soccer player in the family.

Jack: I tell you, that little boy is gonna have the opportunity to do or be anything he wants. Kyle and summer are gonna see to it.

Traci: They are. Yeah. It’s too bad that diane had to work today and couldn’t be here watching him play, right? I think she’s doing kind of a remarkable job with him, don’t you?

Jack: What is it you are really asking now?

Traci: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Well, it seems like everything is going great for you now.

Diane: It is. Toodles.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Hmm. Oh. Looks like I’m going to have to postpone my workout. Kyle wants to meet. It’s probably something about marchetti or harrison. You know, I’m so sorry to leave you all alone at your post, just watching the world pass by.

Phyllis: Ah. You know, it’s funny because, from my vantage point, it seems like anything is possible. I’m starting to feel like the world is my oyster. Do you know what I mean? Like something is about to change that’s gonna be spectacular.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Phyllis: Oh, it’s summer. How funny. Oh, she has a proposition for me. I need to talk to her. Toodles.

Nick: So, what would it take for you to be satisfied that ashland was able to leave victoria’s house without any help?

Chance: Physical evidence would be nice. And then there’s another problem.

Victoria: Like what?

Chance: Security cam at the gas station. Turns out it’s blank right when ashland would have been there. So we got no footage of him getting back to his car and driving off.

Nick: It’s a lack of proof. It’s not evidence of anything.

Chance: I agree. So that’s why we decided to check all the other cameras that we have access to in the immediate vicinity. And we did find some footage of ashland’s vehicle en route to where the accident happened.

Victoria: Well, that proves that he got to his car.

Chance: It’s unclear because it looks like there could be more than one person in the car.

Victoria: [ Scoffs ] “Looks like”?

Chance: The video’s grainy, so it’s hard to be certain. So we decided to scour the area where his car was parked at the gas station. And we did, in fact, find indications of more than one person. Looked like somebody tried to brush over some footprints. We also retrieved a cigarette butt, freshly smoked, buried in the dirt.

Victoria: Well, that could be from anyone. Another customer.

Chance: True.

Nick: Well, I wish you’d get to the point, chance. What is it you don’t believe about our account of what went down?

Our craftsmen begin each day

Phyllis: When do I start?

Summer: [ Chuckling ] Oh. You’re being awfully presumptuous. Okay, fine. How would you like to oversee the launch of marchetti home, our new home decor and furnishings line?

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? Oh, my goodness. My mind is blown. I’m gonna kill this. Summer! This is incredible! I mean, you know that I oversaw every aspect of decor in this hotel. I mean, that’s one of the reasons it’s so successful. This was all my idea. Alright, alright, tell me everything. When do you want me to start?

Summer: Okay, before we talk terms, I need to lay out a few ground rules.

Phyllis: Sure.

Summer: Actually, there’s just one. Play nice with diane. Mom, this role is really important, so there’s definitely gonna be some overlap with publicity.

Phyllis: Oh, definitely. I mean, when I launch the new line, it’s gonna be the hottest thing in lifestyle journalism. Diane will be fielding offers for me.

Summer: Okay, this — this is exactly what kyle and I do not want, this constant competitive in-fighting and just general bitchiness between you and diane.

Phyllis: Okay, no general bitchiness. No specific bitchiness, either.

Summer: Will you please listen to me? My first instinct was to not bring you in ’cause I knew that it could create a volatile situation.

Phyllis: These are just jokes, summer. I’m just joking.

Summer: Mom, sometimes your jokes aren’t that funny.

Phyllis: Oh. Alright. Um… well, I won’t provoke diane. I mean, if you don’t believe me, you can put it in the contract. I’ll sign it.

Summer: Okay. Look, I’m being serious with this warning. Don’t start trouble. Do not create a hostile work environment because kyle and i are going to be keeping our eyes on you, on both of our mothers, for any hint of conflict. The only reason kyle agreed to let you come on board is so that we could keep a closer watch on you. Because, to be completely honest, mom, neither of us fully trust that you cannot stir the pot with diane.

Diane: Kyle. Hey. Thanks for waiting for me. So, you wanted to talk to me about phyllis? What has she done this time?

Kyle: It’s about what she’s going to do. Phyllis is coming to work with us at marchetti.

Diane: [ Coughing ] Oh, that’s — [ Coughs ] That’s, um, very generous of

[Coughs] You and summer. You know, I — well, I saw phyllis today. She seems — she seems really lonely. That’s — that’s very nice of you.

Kyle: Can we get real? You couldn’t care less about phyllis’ well-being.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Kyle: I want you to be open and honest with me about how this makes you feel, whether it will affect your job performance.

Diane: Will we be working together?

Kyle: Sometimes, yes. Phyllis will be in charge of our new marchetti home start-up. Naturally, we’ll be devoting considerable resources to promoting it both before and after it launches.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Oh, god. You do realize that she’s just doing this to try to sabotage me.

Nikki: As relieved as I am that we don’t have to deal with ashland anymore, I am not quite ready to dance on his grave.

Victor: Well, I understand, but you will come around, baby, okay?

Nikki: There was a time when we trusted him with victoria’s entire future. We welcomed him into this family with open arms, and he was deceiving us the whole time.

Victor: Well, let me just say that he’s not the only one good at deception, okay? I knew the moment I met him that he and I would be involved in a high-stakes chess game.

Nikki: And that you would win.

Victor: As a matter of fact, we took him down together. And the company is stronger than it ever was. We almost united as a family.

Nikki: By “almost,” I assume you are referring to adam. Darling, don’t you think it’s time for you to accept the fact that there is no family unity if he is included? I mean, how many times have we gone through that scenario?

Victor: I know. But the idea of giving up on him breaks my heart.

Nikki: I know it does. And I’m sorry. But at a certain point, just for your own sanity, you have to put that dream behind you.

Chance: Before I respond to that question, I just want to make one thing very clear. I’m on your side. I mean, if you two were trying to cover up killing ashland, victoria, you wouldn’t have called me. And, nick, if you wouldn’t have brought that ring to my attention, which is another thing that’s just gnawing at me. I mean, how the hell did that ring fall out of his pocket? You can’t answer that because you two were not in the room when he vanished. Therefore, you don’t know firsthand what happened.

Victoria: It sounds like you’re suggesting that he was dead, like nicholas and i thought, and somebody moved the body. But who would do that and why?

Chance: Your father. To protect you both. There are times, I wonder…

“The young and the restless”

will continue. She’s feeling the power of listerine.

Nick: That is one hell of a supposition.

Chance: Is it? I mean, everyone knows what victor is capable of, how protective he is of his family, up to and including acting illegally when he deems it necessary.

Nick: If you’re so suspicious of our father, maybe you should be interrogating him.

Chance: Well, the ranch is my next stop. I wanted to come here and give you guys an opportunity to come clean first. If you’re aware of anything covert that victor might have set into motion after ashland died, better now than later, when you become accessories after the fact.

Victoria: You know, you’re accusing our father with no proof at all. As nicolas just said, this is all speculation.

Chance: Look, victoria, I am sincerely sorry for what ashland has put you through, and not just the other night — the past few months. I don’t know everything, although I’d like to, but I have learned enough to know that ashland locke is an evil man. I get it.

Victoria: And now he’s gone, and I’m grateful for that, if nothing else. But how he died and the fact that he died at all — it weighs on nick and me.

Chance: I believe you, victoria. I do. And that is why I am here giving you this opportunity to tell me right now if there is anything else I need to know.

Nick: I have nothing to add. I told you everything that i knew that night.

Chance: [ Sighs ] Interesting turn of phrase.

[ Door slams ]

Phyllis: Wow. Thanks for the rousing vote of no confidence.

Summer: Mom, we have every confidence in the world that you are going to excel at this job. That’s not what this is about. But in case you’re wondering, kyle is giving this exact same warning to his mother as we speak.

Phyllis: I mean, the only thing I could vow to you and kyle is that… I’m realizing my dream of working with my daughter.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: That means a lot to me. Your worries are unfounded.

Summer: They’re not unfounded, and you know it. Look at the way that you’ve reacted to diane coming to live closer to her son. You let it ruin your relationship with jack.

Phyllis: Okay, listen, that’s in the past. Please. I’m really excited about this. I mean, it’s like a new chapter in my life.

Summer: Okay, well, I am really looking forward to it… as long as you are on the level. Because if you’re not, mom, I’m gonna know.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Listen, I’m sorry about my jokes earlier, which apparently aren’t always funny.

[ Both laugh ] Hey, I don’t believe that you and kyle really think I’m gonna act unprofessionally, or you would never entrust me with such a high-level job. But I want you to know… that I will not let you down. I’m doing this for you. For us. Okay? I have your back. Which is why I accept your offer.

Summer: [ Laughs ]

Traci: Jack, I’m just complimenting diane on her grandparenting skills.

Jack: Uh-huh.

Traci: Okay, come on. If you’re reading something into this, then maybe there’s something on your mind.

Jack: Well, you are just full of sisterly concern today, aren’t you?

Traci: Today and every day.

Jack: If you’re asking me if I am happy that diane has made a connection with harrison, yes, I am. Harrison deserves it, and she’s been a real source of support for kyle, as well.

Traci: So, I guess the question is, do you feel that she’s a different person than the one who left here years ago?

Jack: Well, the jury’s still out there. She is able to be reasonable and calm and levelheaded and still have that spark in her.

Traci: Hmm. I guess some people can change.

Jack: And some people just can’t, which I guess makes those who can all the more impressive.

Kyle: You and phyllis are like a match and gasoline.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Kyle: But just how this was important for me to give you this opportunity, it’s important to summer that her and her mother get the chance to work together. So we need to find a way to co-exist.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Will I be reporting to her? D-does she have the power to fire me?

Kyle: Absolutely not. You will be in separate divisions.

Diane: Oh, thank god.

Kyle: However, there will be times when you need to interact. And for the record, everything I’m saying to you, summer intends to say to phyllis. That way, you’ll start out on the same footing. You don’t have to like each other, but you do have to be civil. And if you can’t bring yourself to do that, there will be consequences.

Diane: Kyle, think about this. Why would phyllis give up her cushy job as owner of the grand phoenix?

Kyle: I can’t speak for phyllis, although summer said that she was interested in selling the hotel and starting something new.

Diane: Again, why? Why? Summer already offered her a job, and phyllis turned it down. Don’t you think this timing is a bit suspect? Now that I’m here, what, phyllis is suddenly encouraged to come on board?

Kyle: I think marchetti’s move to genoa city made it more appealing.

Diane: Oh, god! I hope you can at least see that phyllis is being the aggressor here. She would not give up a business she owns to take a position where she has to answer to her daughter and her son-in-law unless she had ulterior motives.

Kyle: Okay, even if that is true — and I’m not saying it is — she can only mess things up for you if you let her.

Diane: Oh, oh. So, if she attacks me, do I at least have the permission to defend myself?

Meet ron.

Victor: Sweetheart, perhaps we should leave the subject of adam for another day, alright?

Nikki: Yeah. Works for me.

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Victor: Yes? Send him up to the main house. Well, it’s chance. I guess he wants to… talk about official business.

Nikki: Now?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: What does he want with you?

Victor: No idea. I assume talk about the night that ashland locke died. He already talked to my security team.

Nikki: Really? Well, isn’t he thorough?

Victor: Just routine, you know. Nothing to worry about.

Nikki: I’ll take your word for it. In the meantime, I’m late for an appointment, so, uh, I’ll leave you to handle things.

Victor: Sweetheart, this will all be over soon.

Nikki: And that’s when I’ll celebrate.

Kyle: The short answer is no, mother. No fighting, no instigating, no escalation if provoked. We’ll be keeping an eye on both of you, and we’re not going to stand for any trouble.

Diane: Tell me something honestly. Is this a test to see how i handle myself under the worst possible conditions? And — and — and what if i fail? What if the job becomes untenable because of phyllis? Am I the casualty?

Kyle: Mom —

Diane: Am I the one out of a job?

Kyle: Mom, take a breath, please. I understand why you’re concerned about this. I do. But you have faced much worse. You’re strong, determined. You can do this. I believe in you.

Diane: I appreciate your faith in me.

Kyle: It’s why I let you back into my life, why I hired you at marchetti, why I told harrison you were his grandmother. What deeper vote of confidence could you ask for?

Diane: You don’t, uh, have to give me anything else. You’ve, um — you’ve done enough already.

Kyle: What’s more, I think a peaceful coexistence with phyllis would prove to everyone that you’ve changed. Convince all the doubters that you’re healthier and stronger than you used to be. And if it helps, thinking of this as a test, make up your mind you will pass.

Phyllis: Alright. Thank you. Thank you.

Nikki: Hey, I’m sorry for being late. What’s the latest on “operation diana jenkins”?

Phyllis: I’m happy to report I got the job at marchetti. I’m in.

Nikki: That’s great! Congratulations. Let’s call ashley and tell her —

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. Not so fast. This is gonna be tricky. Summer made it clear that she and kyle will be watching my every move. She made it part of our agreement that I wouldn’t cause trouble with diane. The minute I do, I’m out on my butt.

Nikki: So, what does that mean? Are you having second thoughts about our plan?

Kyle: Mm. How’d it go with phyllis?

Summer: Well, she was thrilled about the job offer, not so thrilled to learn that she’ll be on probation right out of the gate.

Kyle: At least everything’s been spelled out.

Summer: What about diane? How’d she take it?

Kyle: She was a lot more upset than I thought she’d be. Accused me of creating a test she’s bound to fail.

Summer: I mean, I guess I can see why she might feel that way.

Kyle: It didn’t help hearing phyllis would be joining the company at a much higher level. She thinks that phyllis will use her position to somehow get her fired. I thought my mother was past all this petty competition, but the news triggered something in her.

Summer: Are we making a big mistake?

Kyle: Maybe this is what our mothers need to get past their history — behave like responsible adults.

Summer: Mm, you are so cute when you’re dreaming.

[ Laughs ]

Kyle: Who knows? Maybe we’ll get lucky and this will force them to get along.

Summer: I love your optimism. You always see the best in people.

Kyle: Mm. I try, anyway.

Summer: Well, it’s rubbed off on me. Maybe that will extend to our mothers, too.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] Come here. My moderate to severe plaque psoriasis…

Jack: No hello?

Diane: Oh. Sorry, jack. I-I-I didn’t see you.

Jack: Uh-oh, something’s wrong. What is it?

Diane: Summer has brought phyllis on at marchetti. We’re going to be co-workers. I have no doubt this is part of a calculated plot by phyllis against me.

Jack: Possibly. So what? Do the work. Steer clear of her.

Diane: No, I just wish kyle could see this for what it is — a well-timed conspiracy to destroy everything that I have worked so hard to rebuild.

Jack: I know that look, diane. You’re feeling cornered, and you’re thinking of a preemptive strike.

Diane: Well, if I do, I’ll lose my job.

Jack: Yes, and all of the goodwill you’ve developed with kyle and the rest of the abbotts. Whatever’s swimming around in that head of yours, just knock it off. Do not give in to your insecurities. It’s only gonna hurt yourself.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I promise I won’t let that happen.

Phyllis: I am 100% committed to burying diane. That hasn’t changed. And you should know I wasn’t just hired to have a job at marchetti. It’s a very, very high-level job. I will be heading the home fashion division at marchetti.

Nikki: Ooh, that’s very impressive.

Phyllis: Yes. Yes. And while I’m there every day calling the shots, diane will be twiddling at her junior publicist position, and I’ll be in my executive suite.

[ Clears throat ] I’m gonna milk that, that’s for sure.

Nikki: I don’t think you’re gonna have to do that. I think just the thought of it will be enough to send her into orbit. I mean, she’ll self-destruct whether you lift a finger or not.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m gonna lift 10 fingers — clandestinely, of course. We’re gonna get this bitch out of town.

Nick: I hate it that dad put us in this position.

Victoria: Well, you’re the one who forced his hand.

Nick: How so?

Victoria: He would have taken what he’d done to his grave. But you had to confront him, didn’t you? You just couldn’t resist. And now you don’t even have plausible deniability, and neither do I because you’ve told me.

Nick: I didn’t think you wanted to be left in the dark. Look, I hate what dad did, not that he told me.

Victoria: Well, I’m upset about both.

Nick: As usual, his micromanaging is coming back to bite him. Dad has this obsessive need to control everything. He doesn’t trust anyone but himself.

Victoria: I don’t think you’re being very fair to dad.

Nick: How do you not get this? I’m worried about dad. Chance knows there is something not right about this, and he’s never gonna leave it alone.

Victoria: He’s married to abby. Despite all of the questions that he just asked us, I doubt that he’s gonna go after our family.

Nick: This guy puts honor and duty before anything else. When dad moved ashland’s dead body, he broke the law. Now, whether he thought he was protecting us or not, he put himself at risk — and us. Trust me, there are going to be major legal implications for all of us. Do you really think chance is just gonna turn a blind eye?

Victor: Chance. Sit down, my boy.

Chance: Thank you, sir.

Victor: What brings you by?

Chance: Well, I just spoke with victoria and nick, as well as walked the grounds that ashland would have traversed, if, in fact, he did leave on his own that night.

Victor: Uh-huh. So, something tells me you don’t think that’s the case?

Chance: No, victor, I don’T.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Chance: I am certain you know more than you’re telling. And now is the time to be straight with me.
