[ Lily clears her throat ]

Neil: Ever since your mother got a promotion and I went back to work, it’s tough to catch up with you. I don’t get to spend as much time as I’d like to with you.

Lily: Well, it’s okay. It seems like I haven’t had much time for myself these days too, so. School is so much harder this year.

Neil: Yeah, we all get caught up with our busy routines sometimes, don’t we?

Lily: Yeah.

Neil: Hey, you know, I was thinking–

Lily: Uh, oh. Well, I know how dangerous that can be.

Neil: Very funny, young lady.

Lily: Yeah.

Neil: What are your plans for the rest of the day?

Lily: Um, usual stuff. Nothing special.

Neil: Yeah. Nothing special. I like that, because I cleared all the work off my desk, I was hoping that we could spend the rest of the day together.

Lily: Just you and me?

Neil: Of course, you and me, bozo. What are you talking about? I figured we could go to the genoa city athletic club, get a quick workout in. And then, maybe grab a bite, a movie. How about it?

Lily: All right, let’s do it.

Neil: Okay. Come on.

Lily: Hey.

Daniel: Hey.

Lily: What are you doing here?

Daniel: I’m coming to the event tonight. Celebration of your dad’s life.

Lily: No, daniel. You– you shouldn’t be here.

Devon: Hey.

Abby: Hi. Mission accomplished.

Devon: Yeah, everything set?

Abby: Yes, I told the lounge exactly how he wanted everything.

Devon: Oh, perfect.

Abby: It’s gonna be a phenomenal party.

Devon: Oh, I know it’s gonna be phenomenal because all of your parties are phenomenal.

Abby: Well, this is in neil’s honor, so it has to be extra special. You sure you’re ready for all of this? I mean, I know it’s a celebration, but it’s still the anniversary of neal’s passing. So, there’s bound to be some difficult moments.

Devon: Yeah, I know that. It comes with the territory, but I’m more than ready for it. I am. I’m very happy with everything we’ve put together. I think it’s perfect exactly the way it is.

Abby: Did someone suggest otherwise?

Devon: No. But, uh, tucker came by earlier with a big idea for a tribute that he wanted to pay for and produce and announce tonight.

Abby: What kind of tribute?

Devon: It was an international jazz festival with neil’s name attached to it.

Abby: Wow.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: Okay. Yeah, that’s a major overstep.

Devon: Well, it’s just his way of trying to make amends with me, which I appreciate. It’s just awkward timing.

Abby: Yeah.

Devon: I know.

Abby: I agree.

Devon: I did invite him to the party though.

Abby: That’s a surprise.

Devon: Yeah, I just hope he listened to me and remembers that the night is not about him. It’s about neil and nothing else.

Abby: [ Whispers] Yes.

Ashley: So, this big “surprise” you’ve got going tonight. No going back.

Tucker: No. It’s sad. You don’t have a problem with it, do you?

Ashley: Well, I would probably have handled things a little differently. I understand why you did what you did though, and I hope it works out for you the way you want it to. And that devon realizes that you’re serious about wanting to reconnect.

Tucker: Yeah, I hope so too. I just want him to be happy. What impact this will have on how he views me remains to be seen, but I think it’s worth the chance.

[ Chelsea sighing ]

Chelsea: I’m curious as to why you wanted to meet. Everything all right?

Adam: It’s just peachy. Well, other than dad causing his usual drama, but, uh, it’s nothing I can’t mitigate. I, uh– I wanted to talk to you about the baby.

Chelsea: Oh? I hope everything’s going well with the pregnancy.

Adam: Yeah, sally is doing great. She, um, and our little girl.

Chelsea: Adam… you’re having a daughter.

Adam: Um, yeah, it’s– it’s– it’s incredible. It’s get, uh– getting more real by the second.

Chelsea: Yeah. I know the feeling.

Adam: Which brings me to why I’m here. Um, I think it’s time that we tell connor about the baby.

Sally: Woo. Hello to you too, baby girl.

[ Breathes deeply ] Sorry, I’m just trying to wrap my head around things ’cause you said that you want your granddaughter to be a part of the newman fold.

Victor: I do. I want her to grow up on my ranch, surrounded by uncles, aunts, cousins, anything she wants would be hers.

Sally: But not me. My baby stays and I go.

Victor: You’re very ambitious. You’re very gifted. You can build a company of your own wherever you want to. I’ll fully finance it. I leave you with that thought. Okay? And I have a feeling you will make the right decision, not only for yourself but for your baby.

[ Knock on the door ]

[ Sally sighing ]

Sally: Hi.

Nick: Hey.

Sally: Wow. I did not expect you to come by.

Nick: Yeah, I just wanted to see if you were okay.

Sally: Uh, generally speaking or?

Nick: I understand my father summoned you to meet with him. I can only imagine how it went.

Sally: It was not what I expected.

Nick: Well, if you’re up for it, I’d like to hear everything he said to you. Up at 2:00am again?

Lily: Daniel, you really should leave. I did not think that you were gonna come here tonight.

Daniel: Why wouldn’t I?

Lily: Because this is where your mom collapsed.

Daniel: Lily, it’s fine. I can deal.

Lily: Are you sure?

Daniel: Yeah. You know, I can’t stay away from this place just because of a bad memory. And it’s the coolest, most inspirational place in town. I gotta be able to come here.

Lily: Yeah, I, I understand that, but maybe not tonight.

Daniel: Especially tonight. I wasn’t there four years ago for neil’s funeral. I’m just glad that I get to honor his memory tonight.

Abby: It’s very generous of you to invite tucker tonight.

Devon: Well, I just thought, what would neil do?

Abby: The classy thing.

Devon: Exactly. And plus, it seems like, uh, tucker may be sticking around town for a little longer.

Abby: Was there a chance he could be leaving?

Devon: I mean, I thought so. Maybe after I didn’t buy his company and he sold it to victor.

Abby: Oh, I’m sure my dad is very pleased with himself for getting tucker’s company.

Devon: Oh, I’m sure he is. That’s what he wanted. And then tucker said that he thought about starting fresh in a new place, but decided to stay here for me and dominic.

Abby: Hmm. Well, I’m gonna bet that he’s being sincere.

Devon: Only time will tell that.

Abby: It must mean a lot to you. You know, that he’s making an effort. Maybe he could actually step up and be a father figure. Not like neil, not even close. But maybe he does deserve a second chance.

Devon: Would be nice. And you’re not the only one who thinks that tucker is redeemable.

Abby: Oh?

Devon: Yeah. Have you talked to your mom lately?

Abby: No. I mean, she texted me that she wanted to talk to me, but I just figured I’d see her at the party tonight.

Devon: Uh. She has invited tucker to move in with her at the abbott house. I didn’t want to be the one to tell you this. I just didn’t want you to get blindsided in front of everybody tonight.

Abby: Okay. Please, uh, tell me everything that you know.

Devon: He didn’t tell me any details, but I think that you should probably talk to your mom.

Abby: Oh, yeah, I intend to.

Ashley: So, when I bought your debt and then I wanted devon to buy mccall, you know, it was because I wanted to bring the two of you closer and that didn’t work out. But I just wanted to tell you that I’m really, really proud of you for taking the steps to make it happen now.

Tucker: Thank you. Your fingers crossed about tonight?

Ashley: Yeah, for both of us.

Tucker: Yeah. Any response from abby?

[ Ashley sighing ]

Ashley: No. I have all these scenarios going off in my head. You know, that she got the text, but she’s too busy or she got the text and she’s angry and–

[ Phone chiming ] Ah, finally. “At home. Come asap.”

Tucker: She knows.

Ashley: Yep. She knows. Diabetes can serve up a lot of questions,

Sally: Look, there’s no need to panic. As you can tell, I’m not drowning in a puddle of tears.

Nick: The fact that you even have to say that means I was right. He obviously gave you a hard time, which he had no business doing.

Sally: Would you mind telling me how you found out about our little heart to heart? Because I’m guessing victor did not advertise it to you, so it must have been adam?

Nick: Yeah, it was adam. He tracked me down. He thought I should know what was going on. We’re both very concerned about you, sally.

Sally: Yeah. Well, I can’t blame either of you. I’m actually surprised that you did not come storming down to society.

Nick: I wanted to. That was my first impulse, but adam advised against it.

Sally: Well, thank you both for staying out of it. You know, I– I didn’t need rescuing. I can handle victor all on my own. Although, I will admit it was definitely not the most fun conversation I’ve ever had. Your father has a real gift for intimidation. He just stares at you, and you want to run and hide. It’s like a superpower.

Nick: Did he threaten you? Go off on you?

Sally: No, it was actually all quite civil. Actually, was a little bit friendly when I first joined him.

Nick: Putting you at ease.

Sally: Yeah. But I’m not stupid. So, I stayed on my guard, and it didn’t take long for him to drop the act. I knew it was coming because he started talking about how important family was and you know, eventually he laid out his real agenda.

Nick: Which was what?

Sally: Your father will do whatever it takes to keep me away from you, adam and the rest of his precious family.

Chelsea: Obviously, we need to tell connor about the new baby at some point. Um, I’ve been wondering when that should be.

Adam: Well, I guess I picked the right time to bring it up then.

Chelsea: Is sally on board with this?

Adam: She encouraged me to share the news. Give connor some time to get used to the idea.

Chelsea: Smart thinking.

Adam: Mm-hmm. But also, she’s in her second trimester. She’s starting to show. Word is starting to spread and I sure don’t want connor to figure it out by seeing sally or finding it out from somebody else.

Chelsea: You’re absolutely right. He needs to hear it from us.

Adam: Well, good. I’m glad you agree.

Chelsea: Okay. So… how do we approach the topic? I mean, even if he’s okay with this, it’s– it’s gonna be a shock to him.

Adam: Yeah, and he’s been in such a great place. With us, at school. He’s comfortable with johnny being his brother. Um, we do not want to rock the boat.

Chelsea: So, what do you suggest?

Adam: Before I called, I remembered what you said to me when I told you that I was gonna be a dad again. You said that connor would be an amazing big brother and that this could be something really beautiful for our family.

Chelsea: And I meant that. This isn’t what any of us expected, you know, but it’s gonna be great. It’s gonna be great. We just have to make sure connor knows that it’s not gonna make us love him any less.

Adam: Mm-hmm. So, what do you think? How soon would you be comfortable doing this?

Chelsea: Well, connor should be back from soccer practice any minute. No time like the present.

Abby: Come in.

Ashley: Hi, honey.

Abby: Hi.

Ashley: Is devon here?

Abby: No, he thought we could use some privacy.

Ashley: Oh. So, I take it, he passed on tucker’s news.

Abby: He told me the basics and now I want to hear from you. What could you possibly be thinking?

Lily: Hello?

Devon: Hey, what’s up?

Lily: You look nice. Thank you. So do you.

Devon: How are you doing?

Lily: Good.

Devon: This is gonna be a great night tonight.

Lily: I know. I’m so glad we’re doing this. You ready?

Devon: I am. I’m ready. I get emotional a little bit from time to time. It’s gonna be a– a lot of love in the neil winters jazz lounge tonight. I just can’t believe how much time has gone by. You know?

Lily: I know. Our lives were so different from back then and yet it still feels like it happened just yesterday.

Devon: There’s still so much that I wanted to say to him that I never got a chance to.

Lily: Well, you can do it tonight. I know he’s listening. And I know that he’s looking down on us and he is very proud of us.

Devon: Amen. Good checkup?

Ashley: I’m just gonna be very honest with you. All right? He was serious about leaving town and I knew that he wanted to be close to devon and dominic and frankly, abby, I wasn’t ready to see him go.

Abby: Oh, my god.

Ashley: So, I came up with this idea that maybe we could work it out.

Abby: So, it was you. You were the one who convinced tucker to stay.

Ashley: I’ve got my eyes wide open.

Abby: I have to tell you, mom, I think this is ridiculous and honestly, a little pathetic.

Ashley: Abby, I’m still your mother. Watch your mouth.

[ Abby sighing ] Look, I see a good man who’s trying to do the right thing, but he– he always does the wrong thing.

Abby: And you can’t change him.

Ashley: I’m just giving him a little room to give it a shot.

Abby: To give it a shot.

Ashley: That’s it. All right. Now, are you angry because devon invited tucker to neil’s tribute tonight?

Abby: I think that’s a little bit different, don’t you? I mean, that’s a father and son thing, asking him to come to an event for one night, but you, you are asking him to move into our family’s home. Are you serious? Oh, my gosh.

Ashley: What?

Abby: I know what this is about. This is about uncle jack.

Ashley: Oh, lord.

Abby: It is, isn’t it? Because I told you, you should move out because you guys are arguing over diane. But no, you doubled down and you asked tucker to move in.

Ashley: It’s not about jack. Okay? That wasn’t the primary reason. The reason was tucker.

Abby: Okay. Well, I think you’re gonna regret this. I hope I’m wrong, but I think you’re gonna regret this in so many ways.

Ashley: I hope you’re wrong too. And I also hope this doesn’t come between the two of us.

Abby: Of course, it won’t, mom. I love you.

Ashley: I love you too.

Abby: And it’s your life. You can make your own decisions. I’m just–

Ashley: I know, you’re concerned. I get it. Can I please say hello to my grandson?

Abby: Well, dominic is sleeping right now, and I really have to get ready. Louise is on her way to watch dominic tonight.

Ashley: All right. Okay. I’ll see you at the tribute.

Abby: Yeah.

Ashley: Okay.

Lily: Oh, thank you so much for coming. I know it’s hard to get away when you’re working and you have a new baby.

Mariah: No, no. Tonight was worth the effort.

Lily: And congratulations on aria. I know you and tessa are excited.

Mariah: We are. It was just so weird. We came back and we were so joyous and everyone’s dealing with this tragedy. I know that we’re not well acquainted, but everyone here seems to love you and I just wanted to say that I am so, so sorry for your loss.

Daniel: Thank you. It’s very kind.

Mariah: I know it’s been a lot of years, but, um, is it so weird to look at me and be reminded of cassie?

Daniel: Well, it does make me think of her every time I see you, but I wouldn’t say that’s weird.

Lily: Well, it took us a while to get used to it, so.

Daniel: You know, why don’t I make myself useful? Would either of you ladies’ care for a drink?

Mariah: Oh, no, no. I’ll get one a little bit later.

Daniel: Lily?

Lily: Uh, yeah. I’ll do a glass of wine.

Daniel: One glass of wine coming up.

Lily: Thank you.

Sharon: Lily, I’m so sorry about moses.

Lily: Oh, thank you.

Mariah: What? What happened to moses?

Sharon: Uh, well, he and faith were supposed to be here tonight.

Lily: But they’re busy studying for finals and they couldn’t make it, so.

Mariah: Oh. Thank, goodness. Mom, you really shouldn’t phrase things like that. I mean, we got back from our trip and phyllis and uh, just– I’m glad moses is okay.

Sharon: Yeah, I understand. I’m sorry, sorry.

Mariah: Uh, on that note, I am gonna join daniel for that drink.

Nikki: They certainly bring back a lot of memories, don’t they?

Victor: Yeah, certainly does. One of the few guys I ever trusted, you know? He’s a good friend.

Devon: You know what? The feeling was definitely mutual.

Victor: Hey, devon.

Devon: Mr. And mrs. Newman.

Victor: How the hell are you, bud?

Nikki: Hi, devon.

Devon: Thank you so much for being here tonight.

Nikki: Oh, we wouldn’t have missed it.

Victor: So nice of you and lily to do this.

Devon: Yeah. Well, thank you to you both for making this lounge so special. ‘Cause he would have just loved every bit of it.

Victor: He certainly would have. Not the same without him, is it?

Devon: Not at all.

Sally: I’m okay telling you what happened with victor, but will you be okay listening to it?

Nick: What did he say?

Sally: Okay, nick, please calm down. I can literally feel the tension rolling off of you.

Nick: No, I’m cool.

Sally: You promise?

Nick: Yeah, I promise. I’m good. Please continue.

Sally: Okay. So, during the initial ingratiating phase, he congratulated me on having the baby, sweet as pie. He actually seemed genuinely excited about having a granddaughter.

Nick: Well, I’m sure he meant that. You know, family is everything to him. Although at times, he has a warped way of showing that.

Sally: Yeah. Um, anyway, so far so good. Right? Then he asked me about my past.

Nick: Oh, damn him.

Sally: Look, at first it was fine. You know, we talked about how he was sure that I wanted more for my child than I had growing up and how she would have the best of everything and not just material things, but you know, care and affection and being a part of all these lovely traditions and a big warm family and that she would never feel alone like I did as a kid.

Nick: Well, I’m sure those words coming out of anyone else’s mouth would be comforting. It was a real smooth way to set you up.

Sally: Yeah, I was suckered into thinking for a minute there that maybe he actually was gonna, I don’t know, give me a chance now that I’m carrying one of his grandkids. And then he apologized for tanking the negotiations with jill and he… offered to make it up to me.

Nick: Really? What was the catch?

Sally: You saw that coming too, huh? Yeah. He went in for the kill. Victor offered to set me up in business anywhere in the world, success and riches beyond my wildest dreams, but the baby would stay here with the real newmans.

Music (“I swear”) plays

Announcer: The young and the restless will continue. (Lucky) uh-oh the magic’s disappearing!

Adam: How was practice?

Connor: Good. I didn’t know you’d be here. This is great. Are we doing family stuff?

Chelsea: Sort of.

Adam: Uh, we are having a little family meeting.

Connor: Oh, okay. That’s cool. As long as it’s not about my history project again. I’m almost done. I swear.

Chelsea: It’s not about school. It’s a family meeting to talk about our family.

Connor: The three of us?

Adam: That’s right. That’s why we wanted to talk to you. We are adding a new member to the club soon.

Nick: Okay. So, my father tried to pay you off. Bribe you to leave town, but the baby stays here. Awesome. I got it.

Sally: You don’t seem too surprised.

Nick: This is vintage victor newman.

Sally: I mean, your dad only sees me as the person that I used to be, someone from a poor background who’s desperate to get ahead, but he– he’s never grasped that I’ve changed because he’s never even bothered to get to know me. He never stopped to think once, “hm. Maybe there’s a reason why both of my sons actually care about this woman.” And he definitely never considered that being a mom and being a part of my daughter’s life would mean more to me than anything that he could tempt me with.

Nick: I just don’t get how he could get so far in life with zero understanding of people.

Sally: I mean, victor never thought I was worthy to be a part of the newman circle and I suspect he never will. But hey, at least one good thing came out of it. He’s shown his hand. So now, I know exactly what my daughter and i will be up against.

Nick: I’m so sorry that he disrespected you like that. You didn’t deserve it. But I have your back and so does adam. And he’s not gonna get away with treating you like a second-class citizen.

Sally: Well, thank you for listening. It’s very sweet of you. But I really don’t want to talk about it anymore because it’s just exhausting thinking about what happened and worrying about what victor might pull next.

Nick: Well. Um, I’m gonna have some, uh, room service sent up to you, all right? Then, you can get some rest.

Sally: Wait a second, you’re leaving?

Nick: Yeah. Yeah. I just want you to relax and, uh, enjoy some peace and quiet.

Sally: So, you can go confront your father because I know that’s exactly what you’re planning. No. No. I’m not letting you leave.

Victor: Hello, my sweetheart. I wondered where you had been.

Abby: Uh, something came up last minute.

Victor: Oh.

Nikki: Nothing serious, I hope.

Abby: It’s all taken care of. I’m really happy that you’re here.

Victor: We wouldn’t miss it for anything.

Abby: Well, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go check in with, devon.

Victor: All right.

Nikki: Okay.

Abby: Hi.

Devon: Hey. Mm. You look beautiful.

Abby: Oh, thank you. How’s everything going?

Devon: It’s all right. I just got a message from jack saying he’s not gonna be able to make it. He said he’s sorry. As if he has to apologize for anything with everything he’s dealing with.

Abby: And now my mom and tucker too.

Devon: How did your talk with her go?

Abby: I’ll fill you in later.

Devon: Are you guys all right?

Abby: For the most part. But you know, coming in here given the occasion and well, now seeing daniel, the last thing I want to do is complain about a difference of opinion that I’m having with one of my parents. Right now, all I care about is you and what tonight means for your family.

Devon: Thank you. That’s me before dawn powerwash.

Connor: I’m not sure what you mean. Who’s joining the family?

Adam: Um, sally is expecting a little girl.

Connor: Sweet. I’ll have another cousin since sally’s with uncle nick now.

Adam: Yeah. They are dating, but I’m the baby’s father.

Chelsea: Which means you get to have a baby sister.

Connor: Oh. Um, okay.

Adam: Look, I know that this is a lot to take in.

Connor: Yeah. You guys aren’t a couple anymore, but you’re having a baby together.

Adam: Well, families come in all shapes and sizes, as you have learned recently, so we’re gonna work it out.

Connor: How are you with all this? Are you okay?

Chelsea: Oh, sweetheart, I’m– I’m fine. I’m– I’m excited to bring this new little baby into our lives. Plus, if she’s your little sister, I like her already, so.

Connor: Okay. Is that it? Can I go upstairs now?

Mariah: Finally. Got you all to myself.

Devon: Hey, you. How you doing? I didn’t know I was so hard to get.

Mariah: I was just looking at the photos that you and lily put together of neil.

Devon: Yeah.

Mariah: I was very, very moved. He had a well lived life.

Devon: He really did.

Mariah: Tessa sends her love, by the way. She’s at home with the baby. Probably giving her a bottle as we speak.

Devon: Aw. I’m sure when she’s a little closer to dom’s age, her schedule will mirror yours a little better.

Mariah: A little? Oh, my goodness, you’re scaring me.

Devon: Maybe, not at all. I don’t know. All babies are, you know.

Mariah: They’re different. Yes, we keep hearing that. Every day is a new experience. It’s a good thing that we like surprises.

Devon: Isn’t it crazy to think about our kids growing up together?

Mariah: They’re gonna be best friends. Forever. Just like us.

Devon: That’s right.

Sharon: I’ll speak to you soon.

Abby: Yes.

Daniel: Abby, how’s it going?

Abby: It’s a great night. I hope being here isn’t too difficult for you.

Daniel: Getting used to hearing that tone of voice from people. Can we actually skip the next part where you ask me how everything’s going, and I reassure you that it’s going to be fine?

Abby: Done and done.

Daniel: Thank you. Great. Place looks amazing. Very elegant. I heard you had a lot to do with it.

Abby: Uh, no. This was all lily and devon. I just lent a helping hand where I could.

Daniel: Mm-hmm, I’m sure you’re being modest.

Abby: I enjoyed helping out. I felt like it was the least I could do.

Daniel: Yeah. They’ve been to hell and back. It’s nice to see them getting along again, focusing on what matters most.

Abby: So, will devon and I be seeing more of you now?

Daniel: Well, I do work under the chancellor-winters umbrella now and lily and I are old friends. So yeah, maybe you might be seeing more of me.

Abby: Hm.

Nikki: I always said neil and dru were made for each other.

Sharon: It was a love for the ages.

Victor: Unfortunately, they left us all too soon.

Lily: Well, is anyone ever ready?

Sharon: What’s most important is the memories that they leave us with and the way that they shape us growing up. Neil and drucilla were extraordinary people. It’s no wonder that you and devon turned out to be the kind of leaders who everyone trusts and looks up to. Just between us, you know what’s better than mopping?

Chelsea: Are you sure you don’t have any questions? Because you can tell us anything. You can ask us any question you got? We will not judge you.

Connor: I really don’t have anything else to say right now. I gotta finish my history project.

Adam: Okay. And that’s okay. Your mom and I will be here to talk whenever you’d like. But look, before you go up, I just, I wanna tell you one more thing. I will always love you. Nothing and no one will ever change that. This little girl, she will never take your place in my heart.

Chelsea: I second that. We adore you, sweetheart.

Connor: Cool. I love you guys too. Can I go?

Adam: Sure, buddy.

Chelsea: Yes, you can, but you know what I’m about to say. Homework first and then computer.

[ Chelsea sighing ]

Adam: I’m not sure if that was good or bad.

Chelsea: Well, it could have gone worse. So that’s something. Just give it time, adam. He’ll warm up to the idea.

[ Adam sighing ]

Adam: I just can’t help but picturing it. Connor meeting his sister for the first time, wanting to show her off, teach her things. You know, the three of us starting this new adventure.

Chelsea: One big, extended family. You and the kids. Me, sally and nick, right?

Adam: Did I say otherwise? We’re all in this together.

Nick: If I was planning to go and have a word with my father, what makes you think you can do anything to stop me?

Sally: Well, for starters, I would ask you not to go charge into battle and escalate things. And if that didn’t work, then I might have to use my feminine wiles on you.

Nick: You– your, uh… your what? Did you just use the word wiles?

Sally: You know, I could pretend to be super sexy and enticing, but instead, I’m going to insist that you spoon me so I can close my eyes and lay down for a bit.

Nikki: Victor, whatever questions you may have about ashley’s interest in that man, now is not the time. Tonight is about neil.

Victor: I won’t bother them for now.

Lily: Everyone, can I have your attention, please. Devon and I want to welcome you to tonight’s event. We are celebrating the life of neil winters. The man that we all love and the man that we all miss.

Devon: Yes. And we’re gonna keep tonight simple. We have some cocktails and some mock tails, which were some of neil’s favorites and those are all thanks to the lovely abby newman.

[ Applause ]

Lily: We also have an amazing pianist here from the winters mood label, lester thomas, who will be playing our dad’s favorite songs.

[ Applause ]

Devon: And we would like to honor neil winters tonight with stories and memories and with joy and with music, of course, and with recognition of his lasting legacy here in genoa city.

[ Applause ]

Harmony: I’m so glad I made it in time.

Tucker: You need a way out of here. I can give you that.

Daniel: What’s it like when kyle holds you in his arms and he’s trying to comfort you because he thinks that you’re grieving? And what’s it like knowing how upset he is about his mother? Daniel: Mom’s alive? You actually talked to her? For real?

Summer: I’m not crazy, daniel. I saw her. She told me all about the plan that she had with stark and how it all went wrong and he attacked her and he had to defend herself, so she ended up stabbing him with the scissors.

Daniel: What scissors? What are you talking about?

Summer: It’s true. You can ask chance. Or no, don’t ask chance. But the police must know about it. And how would I know, if I hadn’t talked to our very alive mother?

Daniel: So you’re saying stark is dead because…

Summer: Mom killed him.

[ Daniel chuckling ]

Daniel: Oh, my god.

Summer: Look, I know. I know that you thought that I was crazy. You thought I was spinning out of control and I– I sounded crazy. I mean, I saw mom. For anybody else, that would be impossible. But for our mom, faking her own death to get revenge on diane? You could see it, can’t you?

Daniel: This wasn’t just a what if scenario you were painting?

Summer: No. She explained everything to me.

Daniel: Here. I mean, she was actually here?

Summer: She was. And you and me, we– we’ve got to figure out a way to deal with it, but daniel, the good part in all of this, I mean, the joy, the relief… our mom is alive.

Daniel: Where is she now?

Michael: Good afternoon!

Diane: Well, you seem like you’re in a good mood.

Michael: For good reason.

Diane: Well, I don’t know why. The one person who could clear my name turned up dead.

Michael: And you heard that from jack?

Diane: Oh, yes. He keeps coming to visit. I keep asking him to stop. It’s kind of our thing now.

Michael: Aw. Jack’s doing everything he can to help you, diane.

Diane: I know. I know. And to be honest, I’m kind of glad he’s ignoring my wishes. His and kyle’s caring concern is the only thing getting me through this nightmare. Although the stress is weighing on both of them.

Michael: Hm. Well, maybe I can relieve their burden a bit.

Diane: How?

Michael: I have some good news. By the end of the day, I hope to have you out of here.

Jack: That’s right. I’m going to have to liquidate some capital. I need a cashier’s check today. I know it’s a lot of money, frank. Good. Let me know when it’s ready. Thanks.

Ashley: Hey, what’s that about?

Jack: I am in no mood to discuss that with you. Frankly, I am not interested in sharing any of the details of my personal conversations with you.

Ashley: If you want privacy, jack, go someplace else. This is a common room. You never know who’s gonna hear what around here.

Jack: Boy, and who do we have to thank for that? This latest stunt of yours is reprehensible. That you would choose this time for your dirty little trick. Throwing tucker in all of our faces. This is a new low, even for you.

Tucker: Hey.

Devon: Hey.

Tucker: The man I was looking for. Can I buy you a cup of coffee?

Devon: Buy me a cup of coffee? What’s your agenda for wanting to do that?

Tucker: No, no, it’s just that the last time our paths crossed, things were kind of tense between us.

Devon: Yeah, a little bit.

Tucker: Yeah. Some things were said, I said some things. After you rejected my suggestion that you buy mccall and… well, let’s just say it didn’t end well, so I was hoping to buy a cup of coffee and maybe we could, uh, work through something.

Devon: I’m in the middle of my work day here.

Tucker: Yes. No, I understand. Uh, my whole day’s free, so if it’s okay, I can just wait for you.

Devon: No, no, no, no. I don’t want you to wait around for me. I honestly– I don’t feel like taking a break from work and getting coffee.

Tucker: Oh. Okay. Well, then I’ll just tell you what I was gonna tell you.

Devon: Sure.

Tucker: First, uh, I sold mccall to victor newman.

Devon: That’s great news. Everything worked out for the best. Does that mean you’re gonna leave town now or?

Tucker: No. No. On the contrary, I’m staying.

Devon: Oh?

Tucker: Yeah. And you and dominic are the reasons why.

[ Devon exhaling ]

Victoria: It’s a good thing that our dinner meeting got moved to breakfast tomorrow morning.

Nate: It gives us more time to double check the numbers and refine the pitch.

Victoria: By the way, this column demonstrating growth, is really what sells the whole concept. You really outdid yourself with this presentation, I have to say. You continue to impress. On every front.

[ Nate clearing his throat ] What are you thinking?

Nate: Uh, I have to admit, I’m pleased with the analysis. I feel positive about the meeting. We do make a good team. But, uh, there’s something I need to say.

Sometimes you feel like a nut.

Victoria: Okay. I’m listening.

Nate: I want to confirm that we’re putting aside the personal, for now, and focusing strictly on the business side. At least until I can figure out where my head is at.

Victoria: Yes. Yeah, I think that’s a good plan.

Nate: Really?

Victoria: I’M… I’m on board. We’ll focus strictly on work for now. I can only imagine how conflicted you must be. And I just want you to take time before you figure out what comes next.

Elena: So, this is what traveling on a business trip alone looks like.

Devon: I don’t really know how I fit into your plans since you’ve sold your company.

Tucker: Admittedly, uh, my first impulse was to hop on a plane and leave town and never look back, but I just… I can’t walk away without trying to repair our relationship. And I feel like, even if we can’t share the bond of running mccall together, maybe we can… create some new one.

Devon: You thought you’d start with coffee?

Tucker: Yeah. Oh, I also have a proposal for you.

Devon: Oh, do you?

Tucker: I do.

Devon: Here we go.

Tucker: So, I understand that the anniversary of neil’s death just passed and that abby’s helping you and lily host an event in his honor tonight?

Devon: That’s right. Yeah.

Tucker: Well… I owe neil so much for the love and support that he gave you. Because he raised you better than I ever could. So, what I would like to do is announce tonight, at the event, the coming of the neil winters international jazz festival, which I would produce. Can you think of a better tribute to him?

Diane: You’re getting me out of here? How? A jail break?

Michael: No, nothing so dramatic. I’m just gonna see to it that you are granted release on bail.

Diane: How is that even possible?

Michael: I appealed the no bail order. I thought the judge had a pattern of unjust arraignment decisions and so did the court of appeals. We were just granted a second arraignment, today, and I’m sure this judge, the new judge, judge betts, is gonna be far more understandable.

Diane: Judge betts? As in, all bets are off?

Michael: Ha ha. Ah. I brought you something to wear. Carefully curated from your closet by jack.

Diane: Jack knows about this?

Michael: Who do you think ordered me to find a way to get you out of here? Jack and kyle have been pressing me to do everything I can to help you. Not that I needed to be pressed, by the way.

Diane: I can’t believe this.

Michael: Given your history, your bail, it’s not gonna come cheap. But jack is out there arranging financing as we speak.

Diane: So, you’re saying that I might be able to walk out of here today?

Michael: This is happening. Okay? Now, go get dressed. Guard! Oh, and try not to look like a flight risk.

[ Michael chuckling ]

Summer: I don’t know where mom is. I– I don’t know how to find her. Maybe… maybe she’s still close, keeping an eye on us.

Daniel: Do you think she’d risk sticking around?

Summer: It’s not like anybody is looking for her. But you’re right. She could be long gone by now.

Daniel: I can’t believe that she’s just been letting us suffer like this. She’s been here the whole time just watching us and you’re okay with this?

Summer: No! I’m not okay with it. I– I feel every single thing that you’re feeling right now. I don’t know how to make sense of any of it, but I am just–

[ Summer sighing ] I’m just trying to focus on the fact that we have a chance to have our mom back.

Daniel: That’s good. That’s good. See, you might be able just to gloss over this, but I think I’m gonna need a minute with it.

[ Daniel exhaling ]

Summer: Daniel. She realized that it was a terrible and vicious idea, but… stark was the one that pushed her into it. He manipulated her emotions. He– he played up this idea that everyone had turned their backs on her. He– he forced her into going along with his plan for revenge against diane…

Daniel: He forced her? He forced her! He forced her, summer? She didn’t have to go along with it.

Summer: Look. She felt like everyone had abandoned her. She was hurt and she was frustrated and in a moment of weakness, she gave in. And then it all went wrong.

[ Daniel scoffing ]

Daniel: Yeah, I would say that it definitely went wrong, summer. Are you kidding me?

Summer: She regretted it. She regretted it immediately and she wanted to come back to us, but when stark got wind of that, he wouldn’t have any of it and he attacked her and that’s when she had to defend herself and… she killed him and now she’s on the run.

Daniel: You gotta be kidding me. This is a nightmare.

Summer: Mom feels trapped. She feels like there’s no way out of this.

Daniel: Well, there might not be.

Summer: Daniel. We need to face the fact that our mom is far from innocent. I mean, she wanted revenge on diane in a big way. Diane stole the life that she wanted to have with jack and– and she was fighting with us and…

Daniel: With us? Are you blaming us for what she did, now?

Summer: We both said that we felt terrible about the way that we treated her, that shouldn’t change now.

Daniel: She can’t just live her life on the run, summer. She’s got no id, she’s got no money. How would she survive?

Summer: I’m sure that stark took care of all of that. She probably has everything she needs to start a new life.

Daniel: Oh, good. Good. And you’re okay with this? You’re okay with her just disappearing, just like that. No consequences. You’re fine with this? When you have chronic kidney disease.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Summer: I am not happy about what mom did. She asked me to keep this secret, but I couldn’t keep it from you. We were both suffering so much and that’s why I tested the waters with that little “what if” scenario just to see how you might react.

Daniel: But then I pointed out that there were no easy solutions to your little “what if” scenario.

Summer: If mom is found alive, then everything that she did to diane is gonna come out and she could go to prison for that.

[ Daniel chuckling ]

Daniel: Well, if they can’t prove that it was self-defense when she killed stark, then…

Summer: She could be locked up for the rest of her life. And we will lose her all over again. Daniel, we can’t let that happen.

Ashley: Here’s the thing, jack. You didn’t care at all how any of us felt when you moved diane in here. So get over yourself. You’ll just have to learn to tolerate tucker the same way you demanded I learn to tolerate diane.

Jack: I cannot believe you have fallen for that scoundrel again.

Ashley: Scoundrel. What a great word. For your information, I’m in complete control of my actions and my feelings, unlike you. And honestly, having tucker here, how does it really affect you?

Jack: How does it–

Ashley: Yeah.

Jack: He’s under my roof!

Ashley: I forgot this is your house and we’re all just visiting. I wonder how our father would feel about that.

Jack: Tensions are high enough without you adding to them.

Ashley: Why do we have tension in this house? Could it be because of your fiance? Who’s charged with murdering summer’s mother? I don’t know.

Jack: Falsely charged. And diane has triple reason for being here. She is my fiance, she’s kyle’s mother, she’s harrison’s grandmother. She is family, ash, whether you like it or not. Whereas tucker is a veritable stranger. To summer and kyle and harrison. And by the way, how are you going to present tucker to harrison? What– what– what’s he supposed to call him?

Ashley: Aunt ashley’s friend?

Jack: And what’s gonna happen when diane and tucker are under the same roof? Have you thought about that?

Ashley: I have. But you know, diane’s in jail. We don’t know when or if she’s even going to get out.

Jack: Think again. If michael is correct and I suspect he is, diane could be home as soon as today.

Tucker: Yeah, man. Picture it. We kick it off here in genoa city at the neil winters jazz lounge, with the top jazz acts in the world and then we launch a tour of the hottest venues in the world. Go from there.

Devon: Okay. Well, it’s a whole lot to consider within hours, you know. I’m not gonna make a decision about something that big before the party. And the whole point of this evening was just to have close friends and family get together and share memories and listen to music. It’s not meant to be about anything else. No announcements for festivals. And even if it were, it wouldn’t be your announcement to make.

Victoria: Elena, um, this is a surprise. Are you hungry? We haven’t ordered yet. We’re just running a little bit behind–

Elena: Victoria, shut up. I don’t want to hear any more lies or excuses. This is between nate and me. Unless you’re relying on victoria to fight your battles for you. Along with whatever else you’re relying on her for.

Nate: Excuse us, victoria. Would you mind if I spoke to elena alone?

Victoria: Of course, of course. I’ll give you some space.

Nate: What are you doing here? Did you just decide to–

Elena: No. You do not get to question me as if I did something wrong. And please do not let the next words that come out of your mouth be something that makes me disrespect you even more than I disrespect you now. I want you to look me in the eyes and tell me the truth. What is going on between you two?

[ Nate clearing his throat ]

Nate: Victoria and I slept together.

[ Elena gasping ] “Look at this skin, baby.

Elena: I believed in you, I trusted you, I supported you and this is how you repay me?

Nate: Elena, listen.

Elena: No, you listen, nate. You’re pathetic. Sneaking around, acting like you’re on a business trip.

Nate: This is business. I didn’t come here with the intention of sleeping with victoria–

Elena: But you did sleep with victoria. And you did lie. You told me that you were coming here alone.

Nate: I didn’t know how to–

Elena: Do not insult my intelligence, nate. Don’t act like this all just happened out of the blue. I have been suspecting this since the beginning. And when I confronted you about it, you lied to me.

Nate: You’ve got this all wrong.

Elena: Do I really? You told me I was being paranoid. Do you really think so little of me? Honestly, maybe you should. Because up until the moment that I walked into this restaurant, I’ve been a complete fool. I actually held on to hope… that there was some type of misunderstanding. That I was just mistaken somehow, but no, my instincts were right all along.

Nate: Elena, please. I never meant to hurt–

Elena: No, it doesn’t matter what you meant to do, nate. It matters what you actually did. And I cannot believe you’re still trying to gaslight me into believing that I’m wrong and that I’m blowing this out of proportion.

Nate: That is not what I am saying.

[ Elena sighing ]

Elena: You know, you spent a lot of time trying to rekindle our relationship. Impromptu dates. Afternoon lovemaking. Dream vacations. For the two of us. So tell me, was all of that just to overcompensate for your guilt? Come on, nate! Be honest. I want to know how long this has been going on because I finally want to know how much of a liar and a cheater you are.

Tucker: I hear what you’re saying. Back off, right? I was maybe a little over eager. Forgive me.

Devon: No, you don’t– you don’t need to apologize. It was a fine idea. It’s just bad timing.

Tucker: Right. Well, it’s just one idea. I’ve got lots of time to come up with others. Starting to put down roots here actually.

Devon: Really?

Tucker: Yeah.

Devon: How so?

Tucker: Well, ashley’s finally starting to forgive me. In fact, she’s asked me to move in with her.

Ashley: I see. So, that’s why you were arranging a cashier’s check. Bail money. You’re crazy if you think she’s gonna be out any time soon. She’s a flight risk and there’s no court on the planet that’s gonna let her loose.

Jack: Michael feels he has just cause to have her bail reconsidered.

Ashley: He really thinks he can pull this off?

Jack: Oh, he’s the best at what he does and his client is innocent. So, yes, I think justice will prevail and diane will be brought home where she belongs.

Ashley: This isn’t her home and she doesn’t belong here. Period.

[ Jack inhaling ]

Summer: I know that this is hard to process. I mean, I think about it all night instead of sleeping and it still never makes any sense.

[ Daniel chuckling ]

Daniel: Yeah, mom, she could have come to the both of us. Why’d she put this all on you?

Summer: Even if we knew her reasons, do you think that they’d make any more sense than the rest of this? Daniel, I’m begging you, don’t say anything about this to anyone.

[ Daniel scoffing ] Who am I gonna tell, summer? And who would believe me anyway?

Summer: I tried to get information out of chance. Thought maybe he could give me something that would help me to see a way to get mom out of this.

Daniel: And?

Summer: Seemed like he was getting suspicious, so I backed off. We’ve got to do everything that we can to protect her until we figure this out.

Daniel: And what if we can’t?

Summer: Maybe it’S… best that we just let her disappear. Start a new life without us.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: And you’re okay with that, hm?

Summer: It would kill me. I would hate it. But if it meant that she was free instead of spending the rest of her life in prison, then yeah. I would do anything to keep her safe. Wouldn’t you?

Daniel: What about diane, summer? Hm? You willing to let her take the fall for a murder that doesn’t exist? You willing to just sit back, watch her get tried, watch her get convicted. You can live with that? Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Announcer: The young and the restless will continue. (Buzz) morning!

Nate: I had no intention of this happening. You know how much I care about you. Nothing I did was false or out of guilt. I love you. I wanted to be the man that you loved. I honestly tried to fight this.

Elena: But what? You just couldn’t, could you? You were just too mesmerized by the charms of victoria newman to stop yourself?

Nate: It is not like that.

Elena: You know, when your and devon’s relationship blew up, after you tried to sabotage your family, they all accused you of changing. They said that you were ruthless and selfish and I defended you. I tried to encourage you to take the higher path and to fix things with your family because deep down, I thought the man that I was in love with still existed.

Nate: I am still that man.

Elena: You can’t possibly believe that. Look at yourself, nate. You have changed. And not for the good. Unless… this is who you’ve always been. Selfish and ambitious. Either way, you can go straight to hell. Or you can go back upstairs to your hotel room with your boss. It’s over.

Devon: Wow.

Tucker: Yeah.

Devon: All right. That’s some big news. Uh, does abby know that you’ve moved into the abbott house?

Tucker: That I don’t know.

Devon: Uh. Yeah, I don’t think she realizes how serious things have gotten between you and her mom.

Tucker: Ah, things haven’t gotten all that serious. Ashley has me on this… double secret probation. But I thought, you know, the fact that she’s given me a shot, maybe you’ll be more inclined to do the same.

Devon: I mean, we’re two different people with two very different relationships with you. So just because she’s coming around to trusting you doesn’t mean I’m automatically gonna do the same thing, you know that.

Tucker: Yeah. Uh… okay. Heh. I don’t know. I wish I could be there tonight, but I understand why I can’t be. I will raise a glass to neil and thank him for everything that he did for you that I couldn’T. Hope it goes well.

Devon: Hang on a second. Um, I understand that your idea for this festival is just, it’s your way of trying to build a bridge between us and I appreciate you doing it. So, if you would like to be there tonight, I’m more than happy to invite you.

Tucker: I would love to be there.

Devon: All right.

Tucker: I’d be honored to be there. Thank you.

Devon: Yeah.

Jack: Yeah, I thought I’d have heard by now myself, kyle. Um, you know, maybe that’s a good thing. It’s a lot of paperwork when someone’s being released. If she was denied bail, she’d be back in her cell now. Yeah, I promise I will call as soon as I hear anything. The judge denied bail.

[ Laughing ]

Diane: Mm.

Summer: Wait a second. Are you kidding me right now? Diane is far from innocent in all of this. Are you forgetting the fact that she abandoned kyle as a kid? And when she finally came back, it was one secret, one lie after another and she’s been going after jack the entire time, denying it every step of the way. She is the one that brought stark here. She brought all of this on herself. She brought it onto all of us too!

Daniel: Diane might not be innocent in general, summer, but she’s not guilty of murder.

Summer: Maybe this is karmic justice coming back to bite her. I mean, would it– would it really be that bad to get a little break from diane? I mean, even just for a little while, while we try to figure out a way to bring our mom back home safely.

Daniel: Listen to yourself. You hear yourself talking right now? Because you sound just like mom. Did you forget that diane is your husband’s mother? That– that it’s harrison’s grandmother? I mean, how are you gonna look kyle in the face every single day knowing the truth. Knowing that his innocent mother is locked up behind bars somewhere? Our mother did the same damn thing! Our mother faked her own death just like diane. She really any better than her? Up at 2:00am again?

Michael: I don’t know if you’re going for some world record hug, but I think you should know that, uh, all this time is billable.

Jack: Worth every penny, michael, you had a plan, you made it work. I am beyond grateful.

Michael: I don’t think I had any choice. As I recall, you ordered me to make it happen.

Diane: And you did, because you’re brilliant and I’m sorry if I gave you a hard time.

Michael: You were under a great deal of stress. Look, dealing with frustrated clients is part of the job.

Diane: You should have seen him, jack. Michael’s argument was so eloquent and impassioned and by the time he was done, the judge couldn’t help but release me.

Michael: Well, when you know in your heart what you’re doing is right, it’s easy. But thank god for judge betts. He got on board and here we are.

Jack: You are to be commended, counselor.

Michael: Now wait. Hold. There was a moment– there was a moment that I thought betts was going to deny us and all I could hear in my head, jack, was your voice saying “make it happen.” So, I suggested some more terms to diane’s release, and bam, he went for it.

Jack: More terms?

Diane: I’m under house arrest, which means I have to wear an ankle monitor. Just– just throughout the trial. And for now, the price of my freedom was that and handing over my passport.

Michael: And of course, the significant bail amount?

Diane: Yes, thank you. I am so grateful for that. Hey, why do you look so relieved? Weren’t you confident about the outcome?

Jack: I was worried. In case you hadn’t noticed, good luck has not been on our side.

Diane: Hm.

Victoria: So, what happened?

Nate: Nothing good.

Victoria: I guess you didn’t tell her beforehand that I was going to be joining you in L.A.

Nate: I knew it would cause a big argument, so I just avoided it.

Victoria: Maybe it’s because I’m not the only one that was hoping that something might happen between us here.

Nate: I didn’t come on this trip with that intention. I would never purposely deceive elena. That is not who I am.

Victoria: I’m not saying that you did anything consciously. Maybe there’s another possibility.

Nate: What’s that?

Victoria: Maybe subconsciously you were– you were hoping that you would get caught. You know, it’s just a way to force the issue and try to end your relationship with her.

Nate: And let elena find out like that?

[ Nate scoffing ] Makes me sound like a hell of a coward. Saving myself some awkwardness to cause her terrible pain?

Victoria: Okay. One thing is obvious. Your actions show that maybe you weren’t truly as happy in this relationship as you tried to tell yourself and everyone else.

Tucker: Hey.

[ Ashley groans ] Uh oh, what did jack do now?

Ashley: It’s just so absurd.

Tucker: Really?

Ashley: Yes.

Tucker: Did he try to convince you to kick me out?

Ashley: No, he wishes, but no. He’s trying to break diane out of jail apparently.

Tucker: That’s great. Really? A jail break? That’s exciting.

Ashley: No. Not really. No, he’s trying to bail her out of jail actually.

Tucker: Oh, that’s less exciting. Although it might be fun to bump into diane over a morning coffee.

Ashley: Please just stop. That is the stuff of nightmares. How was your day?

Tucker: Uh, I just came from seeing devon.

Ashley: Oh, that’s good news.

Tucker: Yeah. Except that… I let the cat out of the bag.

Ashley: What cat.

Tucker: I may have let slip that I’ve moved in with you.

Ashley: Oh!

Tucker: So you might want to let abby know before she hears it from him.

Ashley: I did not want her to hear that from anybody. But I mean, why did you do that?

Tucker: I’m sorry. I– I regretted it as it was coming out of my mouth. But, this is exactly why you asked me to move in with you in the first place.

Ashley: Oh, really?

Tucker: Yeah. Just… to figure out us. If we belong together. Right?

Ashley: Okay.

[ Nate chuckling ]

[ Nate sighing ]

Nate: Yeah. I need to take some time.

Ashley: So, any luck with that big mysterious plan of yours?

Tucker: I had this fantastic idea. I thought it was fantastic. Uh, of the neil winters international jazz festival.

Ashley: I love that idea.

Tucker: I know, I do too. And I was hoping to announce it at the tribute tonight.

Ashley: How did devon respond–

Tucker: Shut it down.

Ashley: Oh. Are you okay? How do you keep handling all this rejection from him?

Tucker: Well, it wasn’t a total bust. He did appreciate the gesture and he invited me to the event tonight. Which reminds me, would you happen to be in need of a date?

Ashley: Uh, yeah.

Tucker: I gotta come up with something to show devon that my intentions are genuine and I don’t know what it is, but I feel like I’ve got limited time to come up with it.

Jack: You have no idea how grateful I am to have you home. Harrison is going to be thrilled. He asked about you every single day.

Diane: Oh, no. How will we explain where I’ve been?

Jack: Oh, easy, we told him you were on a trip. You can just say you came back early.

Diane: Oh, that’s good. I can’t wait to see his little face.

Jack: I’ve already texted kyle with the good news. He’s on his way. He wasn’t able to reach summer yet.

Diane: Well, I have a feeling summer won’t be as excited to see me as you and kyle.

Jack: Well, we don’t know that.

Diane: I do. And I can hardly blame her. I mean, I’m out here walking around and her mother’s gone. You know, maybe I should be staying somewhere else.

Jack: No, no, no. House arrest means this house. Here with me. I am not letting you out of my sight.

Diane: Oh, jack.

Jack: No, I mean it. I am more determined than ever to marry you as soon as possible. If I’ve learned nothing else from all of this, I never want to lose you.

Diane: Aw.

Summer: Obviously, we can’t let diane be punished for something that never happened. All I’m saying is that we need to clear our mom before we clear diane.

Daniel: I don’t know, summer. I think that the only way out of this is to go to the police and tell them the truth. We can go to chance. We told him what happened. He’ll– he’ll help us. We can’t do this on our own.

Summer: Daniel! Wait. Slow down. Sure, chance is understanding, but there’s gotta be another way.

Daniel: I am worried about mom and diane. Trust me. Honesty is the only way that’s gonna fix the situation. Mom comes home, she will be dealt with in the most fair and supportive way possible. I’m going to the police.

Summer: No.

Daniel: Summer! We are accessories to a crime now.

Summer: No, we can’t do that. We need more time. We can’t go to the police, when we don’t have a solution. That would put mom in prison for the rest of her life. Daniel, I promised her that i wouldn’t tell anyone, especially the cops.

Daniel: You told me!

Summer: Because I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I needed someone that I could trust. I needed an ally that would understand. Don’t tell me that I made a mistake. Please tell me that you are that person. Daniel, wait! Are you that person? Are you?

Daniel: I don’t know.

Sharon: Just what I needed. A visit from the world’s most perfect baby.

Mariah: I’m here too, by the way.

Sharon: Huh? What?

[ Mariah laughing ]

Mariah: You’re so hilarious. So funny.

Sharon: I’m just kidding. You are wonderful also.

Mariah: Ah, no. Well, aria is a lot more popular than I am these days. As she should be.

Sharon: Look at her sweet little face. She’s just an angel. Can I pick her up?

Mariah: I love you, but no. This angel wailed the whole car ride until she fell asleep. So, just give her a few minutes?

Sharon: No problem. I can wait. I think.

[ Chuckles ] Meantime, why don’t you fill me in? What’s been going on?

Mariah: I really, really wanna dish, but first I need coffee. Anything before caffeine is just gonna sound like gibberish.

Sharon: Okay. Wow. I hope you’re not pushing yourself too hard. Going back to work. You’re taking care of aria. That’s a lot to take on at once.

Mariah: Tessa has my back. And I’m only in the office like two days a week. I mean, I spend the entire time wishing I was with aria. But then she woke up three times last night, so.

Sharon: Sounds like a recipe for insomnia.

Mariah: Oh, sleep? Who needs sleep?

Sharon: Wait, am I sensing there might be something else going on?

[ Knocking ]

Daniel: Hey, am I interrupting?

Lily: No, not at all. What is this?

Daniel: Well, I thought you could use a little afternoon pick me up.

Lily: Thank you. It’s very sweet.

Daniel: Not totally selfless. I was actually hoping to talk to you about something. Do you have a minute?

Lily: Yeah, of course. What’s up?

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: God, I don’t mean to keep leaning on you, but you’re kind of my go-to person when it comes to this.

Lily: Is it your mom? Did you have another nightmare or?

Daniel: Yeah, something like that. Only this one is happening in real life.

[ Summer sighing ]

Phyllis: Listen to me. You’re the only one who can know that I’m alive. I mean it. You’re the only one who can know what happened and what I need to do because of it from this moment forward.

[ Summer sighing ]

[ Footsteps ]

Jack: Diane.

Diane: Why do you keep doing this? I told you not to come here. Why don’t you listen to me?

Jack: Because I love you. Because the last time I was here, I left you with a question that you never answered.

Diane: It was a crazy question.

Jack: That is still not an answer. I’ll ask again. Will you marry me?

Diane: Before I go on trial for murder? Is there nothing I can do to drive you away?

Jack: No. No. Now is when you need me most. I’m not going anywhere.

Diane: So that’s why you’re here? To marry me right now? That’s not romance, jack. It’s denial. And it breaks my heart. My moderate to severe plaque psoriasis…

Mariah: I was thrown by something that happened today. And I didn’t know how to handle it. And then I got embarrassed that I didn’t know how to handle it better and that’s kind of just how things go in my world sometimes. It’s really– it’s not a big deal.

Sharon: Well, it’s still on your mind. So, why don’t you just tell me? Was it something at work?

Mariah: No. No. Someone today asked me if aria was my first child and I didn’t really know how to respond.

Sharon: Because of dom.

Mariah: It really flustered me and I was just struggling with all of these different thoughts. And I didn’t wanna say, “yes, I’ve been pregnant before, but not with this baby and the one that I was pregnant with before has a different mom.” But I also didn’t wanna deny dom because that was such an important time in my life and I will always adore dom. But I mean, aria is my first child and I wanna tell the world how amazing she is.

Sharon: It’s complicated, for sure. And I think that I can relate to it because when people ask me how many children I have, I have to stop and think. And I’m sure that must look strange because people think, “lady, you don’t know how many kids you have?” But you know, it’s complicated for me too.

Mariah: Because your mind instantly goes to cassie.

Daniel: I’m not really sure where to start.

Lily: It’s okay. Just take your time.

Daniel: Yeah. Well, I feel like I need to be careful here ’cause I don’t really wanna betray summer’s trust.

Lily: So, it’s about summer.

Daniel: I had this strange conversation with her. I mean, I’m sure she’s probably already regretting most of what she said.

Lily: Okay. Well, look, I promise you that whatever is said here, it will not leave this room.

Daniel: Yeah. I mean, I know that.

[ Daniel laughing ] I trust you. It’s just difficult for me to talk about.

Lily: What happened?

Daniel: I ran into summer last night. She was a mess. You know, she was hanging out at the park all alone. I– I don’t know, you know, I’m having a tough time dealing with this, but summer is falling apart. She’s looking for answers that just aren’t there and because she can’t find them in real life, she’s making them up in her head. And it– I don’t know, scares me.

Chance: I didn’t mean to startle you. No, I don’t wanna intrude.

Summer: No, you’re not. I mean, it’s a public park, right? It’s open to anyone and plus, it’s named after your family, so you have more of a right to be here than anyone.

Chance: I don’t think that’s how it works.

Summer: I don’t mind the company. Can I ask you though, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be out looking for stark’s killer?

Chance: It’s not supposed to be public knowledge yet. Yeah, I guess word must be getting out that his death wasn’t an accident.

Summer: Hard to keep that kind of thing quiet.

Chance: Yeah. Well, I am just consulting on this case. His body was found in pheasant lake. It’s outside my jurisdiction.

Summer: You’ll know more about stark than anyone in that area. You know what a disgusting thug he was.

Chance: The guys over there, they’re good and his record speaks for itself.

Summer: So, you’re not here looking for clues or anything?

Chance: You know, that’s not really what detectives do. I don’t just pop up random places, whip out a magnifying glass like sherlock holmes.

Summer: From what I’ve seen, your method is usually to watch. The brooding look in your eye. It’s why I asked you to go to my mom’s memorial service because you watch. You analyze.

Chance: Yeah. Most of the time. Today, I just came up here to think through. Same as you, I imagine? Yeah. Yeah, I bet we have a lot of the same things weighing on our minds.

Jack: This is not denial. This is devotion. This is commitment. This is confidence. I would never spring an impromptu wedding on you.

[ Diane chuckling ] I mean, say the word. I’ll make it happen. I will marry you anytime, anywhere, anyhow.

Diane: You know, I– I believe you.

Jack: Good. You should.

Diane: You’re impossible.

Jack: I am going to get you through this, diane.

Diane: How can you be so certain? How does that even make sense? I am stuck in here for god knows how long. And jack, you have a life to live.

Jack: You are my life. And here’s how we do it. You let me visit every day as long as they’ll let me. I am not going to let you go through this alone. If you need to shut down in order to survive, well, you’ll shut down right alongside of me.

Diane: Oh, damn you!

[ Diane groaning ]

Jack: Damn me? You won’t be pushing me away?

Diane: Jack, I’m sorry. I can’T. Because as good as this moment feels right now, nothing has changed. And I am– I am not going to drag you down alongside me or the rest of the family. You need to go.

Jack: Don’t do this, diane.

Diane: Guard, I’m ready to leave now.

Jack: There’s something else you need to hear.

Diane: Michael can tell me what it is.

Jack: Jeremy stark is dead. No two bodies are the same.

Daniel: I just hate seeing summer like that. And I tried talking her through her feelings, helping her to see reality. She just covered, told me that she got it, but I mean, I could tell she was still hanging onto that fantasy she’d created in her head.

Lily: Look, what matters is that you were there for her and maybe she needs more time.

Daniel: She’s just so angry. You know, I mean, I’m mad about what happened to mom too, but summer, she’s got some serious rage and it’s not helping her cope with the loss.

Lily: Well, I mean, there’s no right way to grieve or to help someone through it.

Daniel: Yeah. More than anything, I just want for my sister to be okay. But I don’t really know how that’s possible when I’m barely keeping my own head above water.

Lily: Well, look, I mean, you’re both in a lot of pain. You know, you need each other right now. You’re going through the same thing.

Daniel: We both want mom back so bad. We’re both seeing her in our dreams. And now summer is seeing her while she’s awake.

Lily: Look, the mind is a powerful thing. It makes sense that you would wanna try to undo her death somehow.

Daniel: Unfortunately, that’s not happening.

Lily: No, but it doesn’t stop the heart from wishing that it was.

Daniel: Can’t argue with that.

Lily: Look, I know from experience that losing someone is soul crushing. And it’s not gonna go away for a long time. So, you know, you and summer, as you’re working through this grief, you guys are gonna do and say more things that you regret.

Daniel: Well, I don’t regret anything that I’ve done so far. Most of all, reconnecting with you. I mean, I don’t know what I did to deserve you coming back into my life, but I– I hope you’re not having any regrets either.

Diane: Jeremy’s dead? How? When did this happen?

Jack: It happened a few days ago. I tried to tell you the last time.

Diane: How did he die?

Jack: It appears to be murder.

[ Diane exhaling ]

Diane: Do they know who killed him?

Jack: I think the police are looking into his criminal activities and I’m guessing that one or several of his colleagues had a grudge serious enough they wanted him dead.

Diane: Oh, I’m sure of it. I’ve met some of those people. They’re no one you would wanna mess with. But, you know, jeremy’s ego always made him feel like he was untouchable.

Jack: Well, he’s not going to be mourned. Certainly not in genoa city. How do you feel about that?

[ Diane exhaling ]

Diane: Well, I’m– I’m– I’m relieved that he’s no longer a threat to our family, but at the same time, this– this doesn’t exactly work in my favor.

Jack: Because like me, you think stark killed phyllis?

Diane: I know he did. Which makes his death a really bad thing for me. Now that jeremy’s gone, there’s no way to get a confession from him. The only person who could clear my name is now dead.

Summer: Do you have any ideas about who killed stark?

Chance: Summer, we don’t have to talk about that. I know it’s just gonna bring up memories of your mom and all these unanswered questions. I don’t wanna do that to you.

Summer: The memories I can handle. It’S… it’s the guilt that I can’t stand. I still feel like I owe my mom answers and apparently, there aren’t any.

Chance: Hey. The sheriff’s department that’s handling this investigation, they know what they’re doing, okay? And I will keep you updated as well. I’ll stay on top of this case.

Summer: Chance, is there anything that you can say about stark’s death? I mean, did he drown in that lake? Were there– were there wi– witnesses? Is there any other physical evidence?

Chance: Summer, is there anything else going on?

Summer: Other than my mom was murdered? Followed by her new husband being murdered? And the fact that the– those two things, they– they must be related.

Chance: I just got a feeling that there might be something else.

Summer: What else is there other than the fact that my mom is gone!

Chance: Summer. Hey, look at me. If you know something or if you’ve learned something new, you can tell me.

Summer: You’re the police. How could I know something that you don’t? We live our lives on our home’s fabrics.

Lily: Are you asking if I regret our night together?

Daniel: I thought I was being subtle.

[ Lily laughing ]

Lily: You weren’T. Did you hear regret in my voice that night?

Daniel: No. Maybe since.

Lily: Well, we haven’t talked about it since.

Daniel: I know. That’s what started me thinking–

Lily: Okay. Listen, let me be very clear. I don’t regret it. Clearly, it was something that we both wanted and needed. And I think, you know, we just thought that happened and we didn’t talk about it again.

Daniel: Okay. Yeah, no, great. I’m sorry that I forced the issue.

Lily: No, no, no. I’m actually glad you did. ‘Cause I do think that we moved on from it too quickly, especially after everything that we’ve been through.

[ Daniel chuckling ]

Daniel: Sure. I mean, you’re dealing with a loss too.

Lily: Well, I mean, look, I’m not comparing my breakup to your grief, you know. But yeah, I mean, it’s been– it’s been a lot.

Daniel: Yeah. You and billy are on the mend. I don’t think either one of us are really in a place of starting anything new right now. I don’t know. I think that we just shouldn’t put any unnecessary pressure on each other. There’s no need to label anything. And I think that the most important thing here is our friendship.

Lily: I agree. And I don’t wanna do anything to damage that.

Daniel: No. What we did the other night didn’t damage anything.

Lily: [ Laughing ] No, it was lovely.

Daniel: It was more than lovely.

Lily: [ Laughing ] I agree. So, are we good?

Daniel: Yeah, why wouldn’t we be good? Hm? Why are we even talking about this? Did I– I brought this–

Lily: Yeah, you brought it up.

Daniel: Yeah, I brought this up. Now I’m the idiot. You know, I’m gonna go. I’m gonna let you get back to work.

Lily: Okay. Well, thank you for the coffee. And I’ll check in with you later.

Daniel: Okay.

Lily: [ Laughing ] Bye.

Daniel: Bye.

Devon: Hey. Hey.

Daniel: Hey. I was just heading out.

Devon: All right, see ya.

Daniel: Yep.

Lily: Hi.

Devon: Hi. How is everything going in the omega sphere? Or do I even have to ask?

[ Lily sighing ]

Mariah: You always talk about cassie with so much love.

Sharon: She was such a shining light. Just like you. And I never wanna stop talking about her because it’s a way of keeping her spirit alive. But when a stranger or a new acquaintance asks about her, I have to weigh how much I wanna say. And there’s no way I can respond to that casually, but if I do say what happened to her, it can get awkward. Hearing about the loss of a child makes people uncomfortable.

Mariah: Well, if you ever want to talk to me about cassie, I would love to listen. You know, I think about her a lot too. I do. I wonder if we would’ve had our own language like twins sometimes do, or if we would’ve dressed alike or been the complete opposites.

Sharon: Probably the latter.

[ Both laughing ] Look, I’m not saying our situations are exactly the same. Yours is complex, but it has a happy ending.

Mariah: Yeah, that’s true. I mean, everybody’s happy and healthy. And I know when people are– are striking up conversations, they’re just trying to find a way to connect. Like, hey, we’re both moms. But I don’t know, it still catches me off guard.

Sharon: You know what, someday, someone is probably gonna say, “aria looks just like you or tessa.”

Mariah: Oh, my gosh! That has already happened. I mean, she has no hair and her eyes were closed. But hey, sure. Yeah, we look alike.

[ Both laughing ]

Diane: My last chance for freedom died with jeremy.

Jack: Wait, that is not necessarily true.

Diane: Forget. Forget getting a confession. They can’t even question him now. Now that jeremy’s gone, the only person they’re gonna come after is me.

Jack: Slow down. Look, chances of getting a confession out of jeremy stark was always slim to none. Now that they know it’s a murder investigation, they have to investigate. Here’s what we hope for. In the process of searching for his killer, they find proof that he was behind phyllis’s death.

Diane: Oh, my god. That’s an even longer shot than a confession. And I doubt that jeremy left behind any proof.

Jack: Oh, I’m not so sure about that. A guy as cocky as that is going to probably want a few mementos of his accomplishments.

Diane: Jack, I love how you always hold on to hope, but I need to be a realist. And right now, most of genoa city wants me to go away for this crime. I don’t have a strong defense. And the case against me is growing stronger every day.

Jack: Think of all you have already overcome. You came back to this town, you thought you would never see your son again. You thought your life was over. You can overcome this too. I will help you do that.

Chance: Okay. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply anything. I was just saying. If you come across anyone suspicious or threatening, you can come to me.

Summer: I haven’T… yet.

Chance: Okay. And I hope, you know, I’m not trying to put ideas in your head like kyle mentioned. I just wanna help.

Summer: Thank you. Look, I’m sorry for snapping at you. Kinda barely holding it together, in case you haven’t noticed. My brother thinks that I’m losing my mind. And you know what? Maybe– maybe he’s right.

Chance: No, you’re not. You’re in pain. You know, given how stressful all this is, maybe wandering around town alone isn’t the best idea right now.

Summer: Maybe for both of us.

Daniel: Hey. Summer, what are you doing here again? I used to pre-rinse dishes cause my old detergent

Announcer: The young and the restless will continue. (Lucky) uh-oh the magic’s disappearing!

Summer: I am fine. I just– I needed to get out of the house. I needed to get some air.

Daniel: Yeah. Two of you come here together?

Summer: It was a coincidence.

Chance: Yeah. This is our mutual thinking spot. I guess we all have that in common, huh? How you been, man? It’s been a minute.

Daniel: I’m– I’m doing okay.

Chance: I understand this is a rough time for both of you.

Summer: Yeah, we’re– we’re getting through it.

Chance: So what happened here before?

Summer: Nothing. It was just, it was a– a family thing. Chance, could I have a– some alone time with my brother?

Chance: Yeah. By all means. And don’t worry, we will find whoever’s responsible for stark’s death.

[ Daniel clearing his throat ]

Daniel: So, turns out that stark really was murdered. Just like you were talking about last night.

Summer: I didn’t say anything to chance about any of that or about how mom is alive. And you shouldn’t say a word either. Look, I’m doing a lot better now. I promise you. And you just forget I said any of that.

Diane: As much as I’d like to, it’s– it’s hard to find comfort in what you’re saying because the reality tells a different story.

Jack: So what’s the option? Giving up? That is not even a possibility. Oh. Looks like you have another visitor.

Diane: Well, it better not be a minister or justice of the peace.

Jack: Actually, he has been ordained and I think married a couple of people, but that’s not why he’s here.

[ Diane chuckling ]

Lily: Oh, who are you now? Leanna love?

Devon: No. I just picked up on a little something between you two. That’s all. Little– little vibe in the air.

Lily: A vibe in the air?

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: [ Laughing ] Okay. Well, anyway, omega sphere’s doing great, even though daniel’s still grieving, obviously. He and his team are on track. So, I think we’ll have a soft rollout platform by late may, early june.

Devon: That’s fantastic.

Lily: Yeah.

Devon: I have some work ideas I wanna talk to you about too.

Lily: Okay, good. I love that you could just pop in my office like this again.

Devon: I know, right? I miss being able to do that.

Lily: Are you easing in or do you feel a little overwhelmed by things?

Devon: I’m not overwhelmed. I’m playing a little bit of catch-up, but it’s not too bad. Things already feel better than they did before.

Lily: We’re gonna keep it that way.

Devon: I’m glad to hear you say that ’cause I have a plan that is already in motion.

Lily: Okay. Well, if you’re this excited, I can’t wait to hear.

Devon: I want us to christen the neil winters jazz lounge properly by throwing dad a party there tonight.

Lily: I love that.

Devon: Yeah?

Lily: Yeah, that’s a great idea. That’s exactly what we should do.

Devon: Good.

Chance: Did you get a chance to check out the jeremy stark report?

Christine: I did

Chance: And?

Christine: It’s still not our case, chance.

Chance: Look, I hear you. But he did not drown in that lake, christine. He was stabbed to death. He was wrapped in a damn shower curtain and moved after he was killed. So that means the murder could have taken place right here in genoa city.

Christine: It is possible. Or it could have happened anywhere else.

Chance: I hear you, but I have a gut feeling it was closer to home. I mean, come on. This is not a coincidence. Phyllis is poisoned, and then days later, her brand new husband washes ashore stabbed to death? No, I have to look into this. I have no choice.

Christine: I mean, even if jeremy stark had something to do with phyllis’s death, we can’t negate the evidence we already have. There was a plan to kill her with poison purchased by diane. So, even if stark was an accomplice, the case against diane is still airtight and I intend to try it. Diabetes can serve up a lot of questions,

Sharon: You don’t have to follow this advice, but I would just take each comment as it comes, you know, on a case-by-case basis, depending on who you’re talking to and your mood and how much you feel like sharing. There’s no reason why you have to make a decision about who you can or cannot talk to about your child’s life. People are gonna have the reactions, but that’s not your responsibility.

Mariah: Thank you.

Sharon: For what? For being the best.

Sharon: Oh! I don’t know. You know, I am sorry that I missed the early years of your life and that’s one of my biggest regrets.

Mariah: No, no, no, no, no, no, no. We’re not doing that. The past is in the past. Look at us now. I mean, we may have not got to spend our early years together, but… that’s what we’re doing right now. Living life together, the two of us and our growing family. As a new mom myself, can I just say I have never been more grateful that you are my mother.

[ Aria gurgling ] Oh. Oh and I feel like someone else agrees with me. Hello.

Devon: Yeah. So, I figured we could just put up some pictures of neil and then play his favorite music all night.

Lily: Yeah, that’s perfect.

Devon: All right.

Lily: How can I help?

Devon: You don’t need to do anything. Just wear something nice and say a few words later if you want.

Lily: Okay, I can do that.

Devon: Yeah. Abby already has the lounge reserved and she’s just waiting to turn everything out until she gets the word that it’s a go.

Lily: Well, it’s a go. And thank abby for me.

Devon: I will. Of course.

Lily: And thank you, too. I mean, this is the perfect way to commemorate dad’s passing.

Devon: Yeah, I thought so. It’s like, it’s crazy to think about how fast four years has gone by.

Lily: I know. It makes me realize how much I miss him and how much of our lives he hasn’t been a part of.

Devon: Yeah. I actually think that he hasn’t missed anything in our lives. Think he has a front-row seat to it all.

Lily: Well, hopefully not everything.

[ Lily laughing ]

Devon: Yeah, I’m sure he covers his eyes every now and then.

Lily: No, but I agree. I think dad is rooting for us, every step of the way.

Diane: Kyle, like I told you and your dad, I didn’t want you visiting again.

Kyle: You can tell me to go, but I won’T.

Diane: I don’t want to ruin your life again.

Kyle: You’re not ruining my life. I’m capable of doing that on my own.

[ Diane laughing ] Believe it or not, I’m stubborn just like you.

Diane: I think you get that from your father.

Kyle: I think you would beg to differ.

Diane: Mm. That’s right because he’s as obstinate as a rock.

Kyle: [ Laughing ] Mom, seeing you in here like this doesn’t cause me pain. What would hurt me is not seeing you. I know you are innocent, so we’re gonna figure out a way to prove it.

Diane: That means the world to me, and I appreciate you saying that, but I know the toll this is taking on you and your marriage.

Kyle: I admit that things aren’t great with summer right now, but this will pass. We’re strong enough as a couple to work through it. She’ll deal with her grief and we’ll get you out of here and then life will go back to normal for all of us.

Summer: Can you please just leave this alone?

[ Daniel chuckling ]

Daniel: How do you suggest I do that? We’re talking about our mother, her and stark are connected. The fact that the two of them were killed can’t just be a coincidence. I mean, that’s exactly what you were saying to me last night. And now you’re just doing a 180. Why? Why? What’s going on?

Summer: I wasn’t thinking clearly last night, okay? I– I was– I was doing what you said that I was doing. I was looking for answers that aren’t there.

Daniel: So you just guessed that stark was murdered and then it turned out that he actually was.

Summer: He deserved to die. For who he is and– and what he did and I– I just, I wanted it to be true, okay? Doesn’t mean that I’m psychic or that I know things. It just means that– that I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know. I don’t know how to be in a world without mom and it– and I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry.

Daniel: I– I don’t need an apology, summer. What I need is to know that you’re gonna be okay and I’m not sure that you are. I mean, I talked to kyle. He told me that you ran off on him without a word. I tried calling you over and over and over again. I came here as just a– a last resort and sure enough, here you are with chance in the exact spot where you said you saw mom.

Summer: I don’t know what was going on with me last night, but I’m not imagining mom, okay? Not really. I’m not seeing her or I’m not thinking that she’s alive. And I’m definitely not talking to a police detective about any of that, okay?

Daniel: Okay. Fine.

Summer: I just– actually, I just wanted to get some information about stark from chance, but he would not give up anything about the stabbing or the scissors.

Daniel: What did you say? Summer, if chance didn’t say anything about a stabbing or scissors, how the hell do you know about it? (Music throughout)

Kyle: Harrison has moved on to building entire cities. And when we told him his dee-dee used to be an architect and her job was to build things, he lit up like a christmas tree.

Diane: Oh, I love that. And it kind of hurts at the same time.

Kyle: Oh, I was just trying to say he loves you. That’s all.

Diane: And I love him more than I can say. I’m just… I’m just terrified that his little heart will be broken if I don’t make it home.

Kyle: Hey, I didn’t mean to make you feel that way.

Diane: No, no. It’s not you. It’s– it’s the truth.

Kyle: Dad, michael and I are working on a plan to get you out of here. So, just try to hang tight until we figure it out.

Diane: Yeah. Hey, thank you for coming even though I told you not to. And for the pep talk, but I think we all need to face facts. There’s a very strong possibility that I am going to be wrongly convicted and spend the rest of my life behind bars.

Jack: Afternoon latte? They don’t have coffee at the station where you should be working on phyllis’s case?

Chance: I am working, jack.

Jack: Oh, then you’re looking for evidence that jeremy stark killed phyllis here in the coffee house.

Chance: You know what? I just had a meeting with the da. That’s none of your business, so why don’t you stay out of it?

Jack: Jeremy stark is dead. Whatever his plan was has gone awry. There’s gotta be more to this than what we all see on the surface. It’s up to you to dig up all of his deepest, darkest secrets and tell us what happened. I am going to hold you to account. Look, if you do your job, it is the only way diane is exonerated.

Summer: I must have read about the way that he died and the– and the murder weapon in the news.

Daniel: I’ve read every story there is to read about stark. The story about his murder just came out today, and it specifically said that no details were released.

Summer: Well, there must have been more articles than the ones that you read.

Daniel: Okay, well, which one did you see then?

Summer: I don’t know. I don’t remember. Why are you being like this?

Daniel: Because I need you to be honest with me. That’s why. It doesn’t make any sense how you would have information that isn’t public knowledge, summer. I mean, unless you had something to do with it. I– I can’t even believe I’m asking you this right now, but did you kill stark?

Summer: Oh, my god. You can’t be s– don’t be ridiculous, daniel.

Daniel: Well, then tell me something that makes sense.

Summer: None of this makes any sense. Don’t you see that?

Daniel: Okay. Maybe I should go ask chance.

Summer: No, don’t bring him into this.

Daniel: Why not?

Summer: Fine. Fine.

Daniel: So there is something.

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: If I tell you, you have to swear to me that you’re not gonna tell anyone else, daniel. It is life or death.

Daniel: Summer, I’m your brother. I wanna be here for you. I want to protect you. I mean, it’s obviously something that you feel like you can’t tell the police.

Summer: Everything I said last night was true. I thought that I could handle this on my own, but I can’T. I’m not crazy. I know what happened to stark because I heard it from the only other person who was there. The person who stabbed him to death. Mom. She’s alive.

Nick: Yeah. If you were the blueprints for the abu dhabi project, where would you be?

Nikki: Abu dhabi? Um, let me see… abu dhabi is right… here.

Nick: Oh, there we go. Thanks, champ.

Nikki: Hey, you’re not leaving, are you?

Nick: No, I’m just covering for victoria in the meeting with the international team.

Nikki: Good because there’s a new rule around here. Only one of you is allowed to leave town at the same time.

Nick: You’re stuck with me.

Nikki: So, um, I heard the news. I guess I should be congratulating adam and sally. They’re expecting a baby girl.

[ Sally sighing ]

[ Knock on door ]

Sally: Well, hello. Are you my escort?

Adam: Um, do you need one?

Sally: I’m not sure. I was hoping you would tell me on the way.

Adam: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Sally: So your being here has nothing to do with why victor just asked to see me?

Phyllis: I’m sorry, baby. I’m sorry, I put this in– in your hands. I’m sorry I put you in this position. It’s not fair.

Summer: No, it’s not fair. I’m just scared. I’m scared that if you don’t come with me right now and clear all of this up, I’m just scared that I’m never gonna see you again.

Phyllis: No, no. I don’t intend for that to happen. That will never happen, okay? Summer, all I need is time.

Kyle: Hey.

[ Summer exhaling ]

Elena: Hey.

Audra: Hey. I– I thought maybe you weren’t coming.

Elena: Oh, I considered it. You never seem to have good news for me, audra. I might be better off avoiding you.

Audra: Right. Well, brace yourself because I finally have good news.

Elena: Oh, yeah.

Audra: You asked and I delivered. I tracked down jt hellstrom.

Nate: Hungry?

Victoria: I’m starving.

Nate: Did you look at the menu?

Victoria: Yep, I already know what I want. Avocado toast.

Nate: Avocado toast.

Victoria: Mm-hmm.

Nate: You know, avocados were once considered an aphrodisiac.

Victoria: No, no, no. That was just a marketing story. Yeah. You see, avocado growers wanted people to eat more of them, so the advertising companies came up with reverse psychology.

Nate: You’re kidding?

Victoria: No, I’m not. Yeah, a little bit of, “you don’t want this delicious juiciness. It will blow your mind,” and then, avocado sales went right through the roof.

Nate: You really do have a one-track mind… about business. Of course.

Victoria: Right now, I have other ideas.

Nate: Mm.

[ Phone ringing ] Don’t you think you should get that? It could be important.

Victoria: I think I get to decide what’s top priority and that’s us. So, now we know what I want. What is it that you want?

Nate: Hm. I want what I shouldn’t want because if I have it, it will only lead to trouble.

Victoria: I don’t think we’re talking about carbs anymore, are we?

Nate: I’m afraid not. Carbs, now that I can stay away from.

Adam: Well, the great victor newman consults with no one. He acts first, then he complains about your poor performance later. So how did this date with my dad come about?

Sally: Uh, he just text me and asked to see me.

Adam: Was he asking you or was he telling you?

Sally: Telling.

Adam: Yeah, that was definitely him. When and where?

Sally: Why? Are you planning on crashing?

Adam: I’m providing backup. Trust me, you’re gonna need it.

Sally: Okay, I’m not afraid of victor newman.

Adam: But I did hear a hint of something fear adjacent when you asked me if I knew why he wanted to talk to you.

Sally: You’re related to him. Are you telling me that you don’t dread being summoned, even just a teensy bit?

Adam: Look, one thing I can predict is it’s not gonna be nice and the scars could last a lifetime.

Sally: Okay, you’re not helping. So, if you’re not here because of victor, then please… explain yourself?

Nick: Dad told you the news. Did he also tell you about the stunt he tried to pull the other day?

Nikki: Uh, no, he usually keeps those to himself. What did he do?

Nick: He tried to poach me.

Nikki: For what?

Nick: Dad thinks that if adam and I ran mccall unlimited together, it would bring us closer. Maybe even so close that I would magnanimously decide to back away from sally, allowing adam to be with the mother of his child. Which is so insulting to sally, like she can’t make decisions on her own or that she’s just some trophy that adam and I are competing for.

Nikki: So you turned him down?

Nick: Well, what do you think?

Nikki: If I had known what he was planning, I would have nipped it in the bud.

Nick: He’s just so focused on breaking us up.

Nikki: Now honey, I just have to say that children have a way of bringing their parents together. And the chemistry between sally and adam was undeniable.

Nick: Whose side are you on?

Nikki: I’m on your side, but I know sometimes it doesn’t feel like I am.

Nick: Let me ask you this. If adam and sally are just so perfect for each other, why aren’t they together right now?

Nikki: That’s a good question. Why aren’t they?

Kyle: Remember when you used to hug me like this all the time?

Summer: No.

Kyle: Your arms, you used to wrap them around me so tightly like you were trying to keep me from falling off a cliff. And I loved every minute of it.

Summer: I’ll have to hug you more.

Kyle: Mm. I’ll hold you to that. Hey, how was that errand you had to run? You know, you had to do this one thing and maybe it would get you some closure.

Summer: Um, that I… it was– it was nothing. It was– it was fine.

Kyle: Can you tell me now what that was all about?

Summer: Kyle, I– I thought that you were starting to give me some space.

Kyle: No, whatever– whatever you want. I just thought that if you… what I mean is, I’m glad you did whatever you did because this is the first time you’ve said actual sentences to me in a long time.

Summer: I’m gonna try to do better.

Kyle: You need time and I promise I’ll back off. Just please don’t move into the guest room. Don’t go anywhere, ever. We’ll just sit like this. We’ll get old and forgetful and grow roots like couch potatoes, but at least we’ll have each other.

Summer: That sounds nice.

Kyle: Tell me something. This is serious. Do you blame me for what happened to phyllis?

Summer: Kyle…

Kyle: No, I understand if you would because you think my mother is guilty, so I’m also guilty by association.

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: It doesn’t work like that. And I don’t– I don’t feel that way.

Kyle: As much as I know my mother is innocent, I respect the fact that you don’T. And probably never will, unless we’re lucky enough to get a miracle. People call it the biggest smalltown festival in minnesota.

Adam: I wanna build a trust.

Sally: Trust.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Between us?

Adam: A trust fund for the baby.

Sally: Now?

Adam: Well, it’s– it’s never too soon. Matter of fact, we probably should start arranging getting her into walnut grove.

Sally: Oh, she doesn’t even have a name.

Adam: She has the newman name, which carries a lot of weight. So you’re right, she probably doesn’t have to worry about getting into preschool. But I just want you to know, and you, that you will never want for anything. You’re right, she doesn’t even have a name and I’m just ready to give her the world.

Sally: That’s a conversation we don’t need to have because I know how much you love connor.

Adam: There were, um, certain advantages that come from being a newman that I did not have access to when I was a child. But I want you to know that this little firebrand is gonna have full and equal access to everything the other kids are entitled to. So you don’t have to worry.

Sally: I’m not. As long as you know that I would never use our child to grab for a slice of the newman pie.

Adam: Never.

Sally: Okay because money’s great, but true worth comes from within.

Adam: Absolutely, yeah. She’s got you and I’m already wrapped around her finger. So, she’s gonna be just fine.

Sally: Yeah. Lucky for us, we have several more months to figure out the details of her life. But, for now, victor is waiting.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

[ Sally sighing ]

Nikki: Your father wants what’s best for everyone in the family. And if we all agree about the connection between sally and adam–

Nick: Oh, the connection. Mom, seriously?

Nikki: I– I’m just saying. Maybe it should give you pause. I mean, remember how he held on to sharon for all those years? How long is sally gonna be able to keep him out of her life?

Nick: Sally and I have talked about this many times. We are setting boundaries.

Nikki: Oh, well, put up as many fences as you want. Flowers will bloom where they choose.

Nick: Just imagine how much progress we’d be making on the dubai project if we spent half as much time focusing on that as you are on my love life. Mom, sally, and I are good. Seriously. And the baby’s gonna thrive. Adam’s gonna have to figure out how he fits into our lives. End of story.

Nate: Being with you, like we just were, was not on my itinerary for this trip.

Victoria: Well, you know, some of the best things in life, they just happen unexpectedly. You’re not even paying attention and they just fall into place. Are you trying to convince me that you don’t feel that too?

Nate: I betrayed elena. I don’t want to be that kind of guy who lies to his girlfriend.

Victoria: I know that your conscience is bothering you. I know that. We didn’t have to do this. The question is why– why did we?

[ Nate sighing ]

Nate: I need to do the right thing.

Jt: Hello.

Elena: Hi. Um, I am dr. Elena dawson. You must be jt hellstrom.

Jt: Yeah, I got the message to expect your call. Something about a, uh, a podcast.

Elena: Yeah. Uh, I’m sure you’ve already heard, but I host a podcast that spotlights stories of people who have medical conditions that have changed their lives.

Jt: Sounds interesting.

Elena: I have actually only heard a thumbnail of your story. I know you survived…

Jt: Brain tumor, undiagnosed. Yeah. Changed my life and everybody around me.

Elena: Wow. Sounds traumatic.

Jt: It was. Be honest with you, I’m not– not crazy about the idea of revisiting that time.

Elena: Oh, um, audra told me that you were willing to talk.

Jt: So, you work for newman enterprises, right?

Elena: I do.

Jt: Yeah, well, if this request came from victoria, then, uh, I owe it to her to hear you out. We all need fiber for our digestive health,

Kyle: If I could just find solid proof that my mother wasn’t involved.

Summer: Just let michael do his job.

Kyle: Everything is 10 times more complicated now that stark is dead. The cops and the D.A., They have tunnel vision on this. They’ve already arrested my mother, so if I can just find the proof, then maybe… I promise I won’t involve you in any of that.

Summer: I’m already involved.

Kyle: What do you mean, how?

Summer: Your mom is standing trial for killing my mom. I– I– I’m deeply involved. And I– I just think– I just think talking about it is just stirring up all these feelings, and I don’t want to sleep in the guest room. So can we please just not?

Kyle: I guess this part’s gonna take some work.

Summer: And forgiveness. A lot of forgiveness.

Kyle: As long as we have each other, nothing else matters, right? We’ve done hard work before.

[ Kyle sighing ]

Elena: Um, the thing about victoria is while she is the C.E.O. Of all things newman and she is very hands-on with the media division, her involvement–

Jt: She wants to stay in the wings, I get it. Look, when I had that brain tumor, I did things that I never would have. Things that I’ll regret forever. But that was not me.

Elena: Of course. And you know, this is an opportunity for you to let the world know that those incidents only happened because of your condition. You are living proof that with a proper diagnosis and treatment, patients can go on to have a very regular life.

Jt: And all I gotta do is talk?

Elena: I think a lot of people would be inspired by your story. You may even change a life.

Jt: Yeah, I guess I could do that.

Elena: I’m really happy to have you on board. The first thing that we’ll do is book your flights and your hotel.

Jt: To genoa city? No, forget it. No, there’s no way I can ever go back there again.

Victoria: All right, I guess we’re having a discussion. So, let’s do it. Let’s discuss this guilty conscience of yours. Where was he exactly during our little escapade? Was he– was he out in the hallway? Was he locked in another room? Was he hiding under the bed?

Nate: Uh, my conscience was asleep at the wheel, again. The problem is you are irresistible.

Victoria: Oh, okay, I see.

Nate: And that little voice in the back of my head is as charmed by you as I am.

Victoria: Well, I have to say it sounds like he isn’t very good at his job.

Nate: Well, most of the time he is excellent, but occasionally, he’s terrible.

Victoria: Oh, no. So, you do like me?

Nate: Come on, you know I do. I like everything about you and that’s part of the problem because this, what I feel for you is, is far more than just the physical attraction.

Victoria: I guess the question is, what do we do now? Hi.

Kyle: I like this.

Summer: Which part?

Kyle: All of it. The talking, the not talking, holding, having you all to myself. No arguing.

Summer: That’s nice. I wish that we could stay like this forever.

Kyle: I know what you mean.

Summer: But you know, the second we move, the real world rushes in and it’s not as much fun as it used to be.

Kyle: Then we won’t move. Are you hungry?

Summer: I probably should be.

Kyle: Okay, I can take care of that. Say no more. Tracy! Anyone!

Summer: Kyle, no. Absolutely not. You cannot call your aunt to make you some food. If– if you want something you’ve got to get up and get it for yourself.

Kyle: Okay, I’ll be fast. Don’t move. I love you.

Summer: I love you more.

Phyllis: It all boils down to this, okay? You either save your mother-in-law or you save me.

[ Summer exhaling ]

Nikki: Well, I hope you’re right about sally. That things are as wonderful as you’re saying.

Nick: They are. You have nothing to worry about.

Nikki: Because if she breaks your heart, she’s gonna have a whole world of worry to deal with. And she’s gonna need you because once that baby comes, she will need help and there is no man better equipped to deal with a baby than you.

Nick: I mean, babies do love me.

Nikki: They do.

Adam: Would you mind if I interrupted for a moment to talk to nicholas?

Nikki: I don’t mind if he doesn’T.

Nick: It’s fine.

Nikki: Well, I hear you’re expecting a girl. Congratulations.

Adam: Thank you.

Nikki: I’m sure she’ll be a joy. Little girls are such blessings.

Adam: That’s very kind of you. I appreciate it.

Nick: If this is about mccall, don’t bother. I don’t want to be involved.

Adam: Well, it’s too late because you already are. This isn’t about business. It’s about victor.

Sally: I hope I haven’t kept you waiting long.

Victor: Sally, not at all. Please have a seat. So, I understand congratulations are in order.

Sally: Thank you.

Victor: That little girl is on the way. How sweet is that?

Sally: Yeah. Yeah, we are all very excited.

Victor: You mean all that includes the father and nicholas?

Sally: Yeah. Yeah, it’s a little complicated, I guess.

[ Victor chuckling ]

Victor: Little complicated. Not really, you know. My sons, you may as well know, have a penchant to fall in love with the same woman.

Sally: You know, I’m really curious as to why you asked me here if that’s gonna be the topic of conversation.

Victor: I just want you to know that they have more in common than they would like to admit.

Sally: Well, my relationship with adam is ancient history, and nick and I are very happy and I do not see that changing for any reason, whatsoever.

Victor: I admire your confidence, but I did not ask you here to commiserate about your love life. I asked you here to talk about my grandchild, your child. There are certain things you need to know before the baby is born. That’s me before dawn powerwash.

Nate: I was supposed to be a different man when I took this job. I wanted to build a career, earn my family’s trust back. Be the man I used to be.

Victoria: Well, and now you’re in a hotel room with the wrong woman.

Nate: Right woman, wrong time.

Victoria: Gosh, could somebody please put me in touch with the division that’s in charge of time machines? Because whatever universe you and I could be together would be amazing. What? What? What are you smiling about now?

Nate: Why is being with you so easy?

Victoria: Because you don’t have to pretend to be somebody that you’re not. There’s no expectations.

Nate: I’m just trying to be the kind of man that–

Victoria: That elena expects you to be.

Nate: Something like that.

Victoria: You know, she’s the last vestige of the life that you used to live before you walked away from medicine. You started a new path. And when that happened, you gave up on old dreams and old goals so that you could move on. Start something new.

Nate: Being myself with you means I have to lie to everyone else in my life.

Victoria: Well, then maybe it’s time for you to decide who you are. Do you want to be somebody else’s version of who you should be or do you want to be happy?

Elena: Jt, you only did those things because of your medical condition. I can’t imagine anyone would hold that against you.

Jt: Oh, you must be new to genoa city, ’cause, uh… that town’s got a long memory.

Elena: I think you’d be surprised.

Jt: It’s the last thing I need. You can record me remotely. It’s the only way this thing’s gonna work. Look, your heart’s in the right place, doctor, but I am, uh, I’m staying put.

Elena: Okay, um, how about this? I would really love to have you here, so why don’t you just take some time, think about it, and you can call me back and let me know?

Jt: All right, I’ll do that.

Elena: Okay. Please, keep in touch and if you have any questions, you have my number.

Jt: Yeah.

[ Elena sighing ]

Sally: It’s true, I don’t know much about parenting, but from what I understand, it’s one of those learn-as-you-go situations.

Victor: No friends to lean on, no family?

Sally: I wouldn’t say that. I can video chat with my sister and my grams whenever I want.

Victor: How about friends?

Sally: I’ve chloe mitchell. Yeah, we’re really close, but I– I mean, honestly I’ve always been really independent and things haven’t turned out too badly, so.

Victor: Yeah, I understand you had a difficult childhood. I mean, you were raised by your grandmother and abandoned by your mother.

Sally: What’s your point?

Victor: My point is that I understand how you’re feeling. I grew up under somewhat similar circumstances. Tough childhood.

Sally: Well, they say it builds character.

Victor: Well, what it builds is a lot of toughness and bitterness, you know. I’d much rather a child grew up in familiar surroundings with loving family, uncles, aunts, cousins, you know. Horseback riding lessons, art lessons. My god, a lot of reading, travel.

Sally: But you didn’t have any of those things and look at you now.

Victor: No, but I want you to know that your child, my grandchild, whatever she wants, she’ll be afforded.

Sally: Well, thank you. That means the world to know that my baby is already being welcomed into your family.

Victor: And nothing should interfere with your career, you know, nothing at all. You are very gifted, very talented, and uh, I’m sorry that I interfered in your bid for jill’s design business.

Sally: Well, you may have delayed things, but I have still been making my dreams come true.

Victor: You’re very ambitious, very gifted. I have a proposal for you.

Adam: I stopped by sally’s earlier.

Nick: Why did you do that? Was there some appointment I didn’t know she had?

Adam: Uh, I thought it would be prudent to get the ball rolling about setting up a trust for the baby. I wanted to make sure she was okay with that before I did anything. Don’t want to step on any toes.

Nick: Well, that’s good. You said this was about dad.

Adam: As I was dropping in, she was stepping out, summoned to society by victor.

Nick: All right, thanks for telling me.

Adam: No, nick, you can’T.

Victoria: I think we’ll figure it out. But we will start by always being fully clothed in each other’s presence and never, ever being alone in the same room together.

Victoria: Yes, that’s right. And you know, those one-on-one meetings, will now and forever, ever include a chaperone.

Nate: That sounds reasonable. Uh, but what do we do when you just randomly start blushing when you remember the things we’ve done?

Victoria: I’m just gonna have to learn how to forget, I guess.

Nate: Well, you’re gonna have to teach me that one. Uh, remotely from very, very, very–

Victoria: Very remote.

Audra: Yeah, I– I rushed over as soon as I could get away. Um, so what happened? Did you talk to jt?

Elena: I did and he was receptive to the idea.

Audra: Awesome.

Elena: No, he refuses to come here. He only wants to record remotely.

Audra: Uh, no, you– you have to convince him to come to genoa city.

Elena: I already tried.

Audra: Look, it would be the perfect thing to get him to snap victoria back into reality and keep her hands off nate.

Elena: You didn’t see him. He is just a sweet guy trying to do the right thing. And what does that make me? Trying to drag him into my relationship drama?

Audra: You’re not the bad guy, okay? You’re just investigating potentialities. You remove victoria from your equation, refocus her energies onto her former husband, you bust up her monopoly over nate and just like that, everything is the way it’s supposed to be.

Elena: Sure, it sounds harmless, but that would take too long and there are too many ways that it could go wrong. I’m gonna make this short and sweet.

Audra: How? What– what’s your plan?

Elena: I’m leaving for L.A. I’m gonna find out once and for all what’s going on.

Nick: What is this, adam? Why don’t you want me to go see her?

Adam look, she was pretty adamant on meeting with him on her own.

Nick: This is dad we’re talking about.

Adam: Right, and if you ride into her rescue, she’s gonna think that you don’t trust her to be tough enough to handle him on her own.

Nick: Well, we both know what he’s capable of.

Adam: Yeah. And then she’s gonna need somebody, you, to put back a few pieces after he’s done trying to tear her down.

Nick: Damage control.

Adam: Mm-hmm. I wanted to be there, trust me. I contemplated hiding out or paying a waiter to eavesdrop.

Nick: Well, she knows we won’t let anything ever happen to her or the baby.

Adam: Yeah. Well, I hope dad knows that too.

Nick: Well, thank you, adam, for letting me know this was happening.

Adam: Hm. There’s nothing that I won’t do for those two.

Victor: I want you to know that I will back you wherever you wanna go. I will fully finance whatever business endeavor you embark upon, okay? No strings attached.

Sally: Wow. That’s very generous. I– I get it. You will back me, but not here. I can’t stay in genoa city.

Victor: That’s right. You can build your business wherever you want to. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime.

Sally: Sorry, I’m just trying to wrap my head around things ’cause you said that you want your granddaughter to be a part of the newman fold.

Victor: I do. I want her to grow up on my ranch, surrounded by uncles, aunts, cousins. Anything she wants will be hers.

Sally: But not me. My baby stays and I go.

Victor: You’re very ambitious, you’re very gifted. You can build a company of your own wherever you want to. I’ll fully finance it. Now, I leave you with that thought, okay? And I have a feeling you will make the right decision, not only for yourself but for your baby. Thank you for coming.

Tucker: You got dressed?

Ashley: As one does. What did you think? I was gonna be lounging around all morning. I– this is a work day.

Tucker: I was gonna make you breakfast in bed.

Ashley: I only see coffee.

Tucker: Yeah, I’m still navigating my way around that kitchen.

Ashley: It’s very sweet. I’ll give you a tip though. If you want to catch me before I go in to work, you’re gonna have to start a little earlier.

Tucker: Yeah, but it’s impossible to know when you get up ’cause my room’s all the way down the hall. We’re gonna have to fix that, I think.

Ashley: Not right now. I have to get to work, but you know, we’ll talk about it later. You know.

Tucker: Oh, you’re gonna…

Ashley: That’s very sweet. I’m good. Okay, goodbye.

Tucker: Morning. Coffee?

[ Nate sighing ]

Elena: Oh, it is a beautiful day. Clear skies, the sun is out. You can tell summer is on its way.

Audra: You’re in a good mood.

Elena: I am relieved. Things are finally getting better between nate and me. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Elena: So at first, I was thinking maybe an island. Something charming, not too far away, but then I thought it might be touristy, so then I was thinking maybe something more intimate, romantic. Or I could go big, you know, exotic, palm trees, mojitos. Just make a week of it. But then it might be hard to book something like that because you know, this is also last minute. Nate just told me about it last night.

Audra: Did he?

Elena: Yeah, that man is full of surprises lately.

Audra: Yeah, he certainly is.

Elena: And he couldn’t have been more sweet about it. He told me to pick a place, wherever I wanted to go would be perfect because as long as he was with me, he would be happy. And then he left a note on my pillow reminding me to pick my dream vacation.

Audra: What a guy.

Elena: Maybe I shouldn’t have doubted nate when he told me that I was his priority and not work, and not victoria. I mean, he’s really trying. He’s really been putting in the work to prove that I am important. And I think now it’s up to me to trust him and I feel like I’m finally in a place to do that.

Audra: Yeah, and now he’s in L.A., On a business trip.

Elena: Right. And it is a good thing that he has you to look after things at newman media. I’m pretty sure he is going to be focused on making deals and proving himself to the powers that be. Probably won’t even come up for air until he’s back home. That man really throws himself into his work.

Audra: Yeah, he– he certainly does.

Elena: Okay. What’s wrong with you?

Audra: Did nate tell you he was going to L.A. Alone?

Elena: Yes.

Audra: Well, he didn’T. He went with victoria.

Nate: Hey.

Victoria: Hi.

Nate: You look ready for action.

Victoria: Thank you, I’m extremely excited. I just love this moment. We know why we’re here. We know what we’re gonna do and I have no doubt that we’re gonna be successful beyond anything that we’ve imagined.

Nate: Well, with that confidence, how can we not go home winners?

Victoria: Exactly. All right. Well, practically back-to-back meetings starting later today. Um, you know, I just wanted to go over the agenda, the bullet points, the goals, the research, and just make sure that we’re on the same page.

Nate: Okay.

Victoria: So, as you can see, we have dinner later this evening in santa monica where we will make our pitch and…

Nate: And dazzle them with our offer.

[ Victoria laughing ]

Victoria: Yes, I like the way that you think. But in the meantime, I do want to go over the research and make sure that it’s solid because I really want to nail this deal.

Nate: So do I.

Jack: Why are you here?

Tucker: Oh, you mean like what’s the meaning of life and all that?

Jack: My family is in crisis right now, diane is in jail. Summer is mourning the loss of her mother. We are struggling through every hour of every day and ashley drops you on us. It’s offensive.

Tucker: It’s offensive that your sister is moving forward with her life?

Jack: With you? Yes.

Tucker: Jack, I know you don’t like me.

Jack: You apparently don’t realize how much I don’t like you.

Tucker: But believe it or not, I am as dedicated to family as you are.

Jack: You don’t know the meaning of the word.

Tucker: Which word?

Jack: Family.

Tucker: Uh, that’s true. I’m not as great at it as you are, but I’d like to be and I’m trying to be. And that’s one of the reasons I’m here. Uh, I’d like to repair my relationship with devon and ashley understands that. So, she’s offered to let me move in here.

Jack: Oh, let’s be clear. Ashley asked you to move in here to make my life hell.

Tucker: Jack, I hope you will receive this in the spirit that it’s offered, but not everything’s about you. And I came back to genoa city expressly to, uh, to show ashley that I’m worthy of her love. And so we can make a real future together.

Jack: A future? With you?

Tucker: Yeah.

Jack: After the unending pain you caused her. How did you con her into believing that?

Tucker: So, you think that she’s just so easily manipulated that she’s fallen prey to my evil agenda?

Jack: Yeah, that about sizes it up.

Tucker: That’s funny because that’s exactly what she thinks about you and diane.

Billy: Hey.

Ashley: Hey. So good to see somebody working hard around here.

Billy: Yeah, it’s been crazy the last few days.

Ashley: Thank you, jack. He’s lost his mind because of diane.

Billy: I– I didn’t know he’d seen her. What– what happened?

Ashley: I don’t know. He doesn’t keep me in the loop. Frankly, I don’t want to be included in that insanity.

Billy: Well, you know, jack’s in a tough spot right now. I think we can take it easy on him a little.

Ashley: Oh, good idea, billy. I’ll take it easy. Meanwhile, jack is defending a murderer to anybody that will listen.

Billy: I think we should watch our word choice. You know, walking into the C.E.O.’S office, claiming his fiancee’s a murderer.

Ashley: Murderess. I’m sorry.

Billy: Not the part I was worried about.

Ashley: As co-C.E.O., You should be worried because jack’s priorities are a threat to this company.

Billy: I don’t follow.

Ashley: Well, um, you are aware of the barrage of media inquiries we’ve been getting. They’re not asking anything about jabot. They want to know about the co-C.E.O.’S fiance who murdered his ex-wife. And P.S., The trial hasn’t even started yet. That’s gonna be a feeding frenzy. So, I was just thinking that maybe we should try to do something before the jack and diane show tanks this company completely.

[Tap tap]

Jack: Oh, wait, wait. If you’re gonna compare yourself to diane, stop right there. Diane has genuinely changed. She’s done the work. She’s made amends. You, you’re the same tucker that screwed over everybody in this town.

Tucker: Yeah, but who also almost died in a car crash and–

Jack: Oh, yes, yes. And lived in an ashram and found your soul. The flaw there is you don’t have one.

Tucker: Okay. Not a morning person, noted. This coffee’s good, man. You sure you don’t want some?

Jack: I’ll get coffee on my way to work.

Tucker: Hey, uh, by the way, I just want you to know that I’m truly sorry for what diane is going through right now. For what it’s worth, I don’t– I don’t think she’s entirely responsible for phyllis’s death.

Jack: For what it’s worth. I don’t give a damn what you think. Wait, you know what? As long as we’re having this conversation, if you intend to continue this little dalliance with ashley, whatever the hell it is, be warned. There will be hell to pay if you ever again hurt her or use her.

Billy: I don’t buy into the whole doomsday scenario you’re painting for jabot. I think it’s overblown.

Ashley: Really? Well, because of the public’s fascination with this case, our department heads have become well-versed in the art of no comment. They’re not really running their divisions, billy. It’s not good for morale. It’s not good for our bottom line and it’s not good for jabot’s reputation.

Billy: You know, jabot has faced worse and come back even stronger.

Ashley: But this is just the beginning. Jack is distracted, he’s throwing his money and his time behind whatever defense that michael comes up with. He’s doing nothing to get in front of the explosion that’s gonna happen day one of diane’s trial.

Billy: That’s a good point. I’ll talk to P.R. And make sure we have a plan in place.

Ashley: Great idea, but it’s not gonna work because the problem is diane jenkins. Oh, just tell me this. How does one spin an employee who’s engaged to a co-C.E.O. Who murders a former colleague?

Billy: Alleged murder, ashley, okay? And again, I think you’re overreacting.

Ashley: I am not. I’m being realistic. Jack’s behavior has been irrational since he got back with diane and I’m warning you, we need to make moves to do whatever we can to protect our company before it’s too late.

Elena: Victoria went to L.A.?

[ Elena sighing ] I asked nate point blank and he told me he was going alone. Maybe victoria joined the trip, spur of the moment.

Audra: The plan was always for the two of them to go together. Yeah, I think she asked him to make the trip.

Elena: How do you know?

Audra: Well, nate told me about it yesterday. Now, I wanted to tag along, learn from my boss, but he said he needed me to run the office since he and victoria were making the trip. That he was hoping she’d teach him a few things. I can only imagine the things she’ll be teaching him.

Elena: Oh my god.

Audra: You know, I can’t believe the man would lie to your face. After all the talk about making you a priority. He– he sneaks off to L.A. With victoria. What an ass. You know, and then he gets you all excited about this romantic getaway.

Elena: Stop it.

Audra: You know, the jerk only made the play to cover his guilt. Nate has a brilliant, beautiful woman in his life and he’d rather go chase after victoria newman.

Elena: Audra, stop. And we’re done.

Ashley: You know, billy, honestly, diane always has her own agenda. You know that. And guess what she wants now. Everything. She wants, jack, she wants his name, she wants his money, she wants his power. She’s a danger to him and to us and the fact that jack doesn’t see that proves he’s in no position to be protecting our company or to be running jabot.

Billy: So, what do you plan? Hm. What do you think we should do about that?

[ Ashley sighing ]

Ashley: Don’t you think it’s kind of obvious?

Billy: You can’t be serious.

Ashley: I am serious. We need to convene the board and contain jack. I don’t want to see it come to that, but maybe we need to do something. I don’t know, shut him down completely.

Billy: You need to slow down a little bit, okay? And you need to listen to yourself because it sounds like you’re planning a coup.

Ashley: I’m protecting the company.

Billy: Okay, well, that’s not gonna happen. We are not gonna force jack from his position as C.E.O of this company. There’s no reason to believe he doesn’t have the company’s best interest and our family’s best interests at heart.

Ashley: There’s every reason to believe that because his obsession with diane has gone on too far and it simply has to stop, period.

Billy: This is about a hell of a lot more than business isn’t it?

Ashley: Oh, wow.

Tucker: What ashley and I have, there’s no doubt, it’s, you know, it’s one of the great, epic love stories. You’ll see, we’re meant to be together.

Jack: Oh, you want me to see that?

Tucker: Yeah. I mean, listen, I understand your resistance because I was not a great guy, back in the day, I admit it. Um, and that’s why while I’m here, I’m as dedicated to proving myself to you and the rest of the abbots as I am to ashley.

Jack: This little stunt.

Tucker: It’s a kick in the pants, huh?

Jack: As furious as I am at ashley for foisting you on this family at a time like this, she is still my sister. I love her. I will always protect her.

Tucker: Now, see, that’s something we have in common then because I love her and I will always protect her. See? We should do this more often. I feel like we’ve bonded.

[ Door slamming ]

[ Tucker sighing ]

Audra: I’m sorry, but I– I shouldn’t have gone off like that. Look, it’s just for months, okay? Nate’s sworn to you that there was nothing going on between him and victoria. Look, I knew he was ambitious, okay? I just didn’t peg him for a cheating liar.

Elena: And I was dumb enough to trust him. I guess I just wanted to believe that we were gonna be okay. So, um, you think they’ve been sleeping together this whole time? Or was that the point of this trip?

Audra: Look, there’s a real chance we’re reading too much into this, okay? That there’s nothing going on between them. Look, maybe we should take a step back.

Elena: No… because regardless of whether or not nate and victoria have actually slept together, nate is a liar. He played me. He dangled a dream vacation in front of my face and he got me right where he wanted me. And there I was, trusting, patient, stupid girlfriend believing in a lie while he’s off trying to really impress his boss.

Victoria: The company has taken some hits, but they’re definitely undervalued.

Nate: Agreed. The dynamics for podcasting platforms are in flux. A lot of companies are downsizing, reorganizing, which is great timing for us. Newman can swoop in, rebuild, make the company leaner, more muscular.

Victoria: Stronger, more powerful. Yes, I do like the sound of that. We can reorganize creators and copyright owners and build an economic model that will benefit everyone.

Nate: How can they say no?

Victoria: You’re very hard to say no to.

Nate: Um, something I was thinking about last night. A way to recoup a portion of our investment could be to include premium subscription offerings. Generate intellectual property deals with hollywood.

Victoria: Does your brain ever stop working?

Nate: I wish I did. I– I must confess, I listen to those podcasts featuring stories that help put you to sleep at night.

Victoria: Mm. That sounds very boring.

Nate: Boring? This company actually has a division dedicated to those types of stories.

Victoria: Well, can that please be one of the first divisions that we downsize?

Nate: You are very hard to say no to.

Victoria: You know, I have a very hard time picturing you listening to sleepy story time podcasts.

Nate: I find it soothing. Um, you know, someone’s voice in my ear as I drift off to sleep on nights, I’m feeling a little lonely.

Victoria: A man like you can’t possibly feel lonely.

Nate: Once in a while. More often now, I guess. Ever since I entered this new stage of my life.

Victoria: How so?

[ Nate exhaling ]

Nate: It seems the people who matter the most to me aren’t moving forward with me. Where I see positives, they see negatives. They don’t understand what drives me.

Victoria: Well, you know, bigger, better, more. It’s not for everyone. But for some of us, it’s the best reason to get out of bed in the morning.

Nate: You really do get it.

Victoria: I do, I get it. I can’t tell you how good it feels working with someone that I’m so in sync with. So anyway, the numbers are a little soft on this, but I think we can play that to our advantage as we, um, refine our position.

Nate: To do that, we have to make the most of the moment.

Jack: What a day.

Michael: Hello to you too.

Jack: Where are we with diane’s defense?

Michael: Oh, well, we are currently sitting in the shadow of a mountain of evidence that all points to diane. Jeremy stark remains dead, but somehow we are still waiting to learn of his cause of death.

Jack: Waiting is getting us nowhere. We have to be proactive, michael.

Michael: What do you recommend? Holding a seance and raising jeremy stark from the dead? That would be proactive.

Jack: He was our best chance at exonerating diane. Now what? Dead ends? The police aren’t helping. Diane needs something to hold onto, so do I. Something that will give her some hope. Stark is dead. We have to pivot. How do we do that?

Michael: Maybe not pivot so much.

Jack: Meaning what?

Michael: We’re behind the game where jeremy stark is concerned. We now do what we should have done when he was still breathing. Investigate the hell out of him. Hey, man. You could save hundreds

Announcer: The young and the restless will continue. (Lucky) uh-oh the magic’s disappearing!

Ashley: Do you know how many times jack has tried to kick me out of my own home? Not once, not twice, but three times. Simply because I don’t want to play along with this fatal attraction thing he’s got going with diane.

Billy: Okay, great. So he kicks you out of the house and your payback is to kick him out of the company. That’s your plan?

Ashley: I told you I want to convene the board so I can protect the company.

Billy: So you’re not looking for revenge on jack?

Ashley: No, I’m not. Although because of recent events, I can see why it might be perceived that way, yes.

Billy: Ashley, what are you doing?

Ashley: I invited tucker to move in with me. I mean, he has his own room, but yeah.

Billy: The man that shredded your heart into pieces. The man that wanted to steal this company. The man who lies to you and everyone in town simply by opening his mouth. Do you think that’s a good idea to plant him under the roof of our family home?

Ashley: I had a lot of reasons for what I did and not one of them is your business.

Billy: Ashley, you’re looking for war, okay? Tucker is a live grenade. He is just as malicious as you believe diane to be. What makes you think that he’s not using you to try and take over this company?

Ashley: Okay, we’re not talking about tucker mccall. We’re talking about diane and jack.

Billy: Hold on, I thought we were talking about protecting this company?

Ashley: Diane is lethal. She could destroy jack and our family. Now instead of standing there and accusing me of blowing everything out of proportion. Why don’t you start being as afraid as I am? This woman has incredible influence over our brother and she could very well beat those murder charges. She will be right back here. She will be insinuating herself even more deeply into our family and that she will establish herself as queen of the abbott household and this company. Is that what you want?

Michael: Did you contact the financial expert I connected you with?

Jack: The forensic accountant? Yeah, unfortunately, she couldn’t trace stark’s money. She promised me she would leave no stone unturned, but I haven’t heard from her yet. I am waiting and I–

Michael: Listen, listen, give her some time. Nothing tells a better story than a good money trail. Now I’m gonna work on the subpoena process regarding the phone records. Phyllis’s should be easy enough since she is the victim of the crime–

Jack: What about stark’s records?

Michael: Yeah, well, that’s a– a trickier one. At present, we have nothing that ties him in any way to phyllis’s murder. Ergo, we need a very convincing argument in order to legally subpoena his records.

Jack: Sounds unlikely. Wait, legally subpoena?

Michael: I might know some people. These people know how to access all sorts of data, including calls. They could do it in a quiet, proactive kind of way.

Jack great. Do it.

Michael: I can use the same magic to get, uh, security footage to trace stark’s movements while he was in genoa city. You know, thanks to this high-tech, big brother’s watching world we live in, it could, uh, it could glean us a thing or two.

Jack: Great. Do it now. This is a plan.

Michael: Yeah.

Jack: Wait, what aren’t you saying?

[ Michael sighing ]

Michael: As much as it makes sense to us that that scum killed phyllis, the “stark did it defense” is a very tricky path to navigate. It’s– it’s really too easy to pin a crime on a dead man who can’t defend himself and it really doesn’t play well to any judge or jury. And if we don’t have bona fide, indisputable evidence, christine is gonna rip us to shreds.

Jack: So we can’t win a case blaming this on stark?

Michael: It’s not a slam dunk, but it can be done. We just need to focus on proving that the evidence against diane was fabricated. It was planted by a manipulative mastermind hell bent on revenge. Although, the best defense relies on the answers we find. But if we don’t find any–

Jack: Not an option, we will find the answers.

Audra: Don’t beat yourself up. When it comes to getting what she wants, victoria is shameless.

Elena: Yeah. God forbid she’d let a little thing like morals or what’s right and wrong get in her way.

[ Elena sighing ] I’m an idiot.

Audra: You’re not an idiot. You’re in love. Look, you’re trying to protect your relationship, the life you’ve built–

Elena: Not much of a life anymore is it?

Audra: Elena, again, not your fault. You’re the one who’s the victim and–

Elena: Don’t say it. I’m not a victim.

Audra: What I meant to say is that look, you’re one of the smartest women I know. Now, you know the truth about nate. All of his charm, you know, his promises, they were all bull. He’s not working on strengthening your relationship. He’s been actively sabotaging it.

Nate: Scripted fiction could be a place to expand. Downloads are on a rise, while other forms are taking a hit. Especially with our target demographic.

Victoria: Well, thank god, you’re on top of things. Well, I mean, I– I do try to stay up to date with popular culture, but I tend to not see it from a consumer’s angle.

Nate: Wow. How can the head of a huge international corporation not be up to date on what people want?

Victoria: I don’t need to, I’ve got you. Lucky newman media.

[ Nate chuckling ]

[ Victoria chuckling ]

Nate: Once we acquire the company, it’d be key to make the employees feel like they’re part of something exciting. To be recognized for their contributions. They’re not just punching a clock, they’re making a difference.

Victoria: You know, you just confirmed it, yet again. Naming you C.E.O. Of newman media is definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Nate: I learn from you every day.

Victoria: I learn from you too. You bring such fresh ideas, you bring insight, energy, it’s inspiring. It’s actually kind of intoxicating. You know, I read something that you might be interested in. It’s how to balance leadership in business. It’s push or pull, lighting a fire under someone or stoking the fire within. Rules versus trust, that sort of thing.

Nate: Mm. I’d be interested. Is there an article you can send me?

Victoria: Uh, no, it’s a book. Publishers sometimes send me advance copies, in hopes that I might write a blurb for the cover. I just might for this one. It had some really good ideas in it.

Nate: Sounds like it. Um, I’d love to take a look sometime.

Victoria: Um, well, I have it upstairs in my room. Shall I grab it for you?

Nate: Why don’t we go together?

Victoria: Sure. Thank you.

Jack: Michael, I have absolute faith in you. Wow. This day only gets better.

Michael: Ignore him, jack. Your focus is on diane, no one else. Not even that moron.

Jack: That moron is living under my roof.

Michael: Say what?

Jack: My sister, ashley, is trying to prove a point.

Michael: What? That she has horrific taste in men?

Jack: She is furious that I moved diane, who is my fiance, the mother of our son, into our home. She’s decided to counterpunch by moving him into a room of his own. As if there’s any comparison.

Michael: Ashley always did go big.

Jack: Her timing is horrendous. Not that she cares. God, the house is upside down with grief and worry. This latest play of hers is only gonna bring more chaos and misery.

Michael: All right, jack, remember your priorities.

Jack: Oh, believe me. That is what gets me through every day, bringing diane home. I love my sister. I hate what is happening between her and tucker, but I cannot make it my business to save her from herself. No, I have to use all of my energy to save diane.

Elena: I really tried to understand nate. I supported him, even when I knew the decisions he was making were wrong. And when he couldn’t perform surgery, I saw him struggle to redefine himself and to find his place in the world again. He was a god in the O.R. And then suddenly, he was just a normal guy. And don’t get me wrong, he had a great life, success, love, but it wasn’t enough. What he wanted was power and he didn’t care about breaking the rules to get it. In fact, he wanted to make his own rules because it was all about winning for him. And yet, I still stood by him. I tried to reason with him. I tried to remind him of the man that he used to be. Someone who is compassionate, someone who was loyal, someone who knew the difference between right and wrong, but I guess lying became easier than telling the truth. And power was more important than love or family. And the consequences, the collateral damage, it meant nothing.

[ Victoria panting ] I guess I just really wanted to believe that the nate that I fell in love with still existed. But I should have known better, right? He was ready to betray his family to get what he wanted. And it was only a matter of time before he betrayed me too. I’m adding downy unstopables to my wash now.

Ashley: God, I can’t believe he’s here. My pig-headed brother is gonna give me indigestion.

Ashley: Then ignore him. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Ashley: Well, you’re very full of yourself, aren’t you?

Tucker: Uh, jack and I had a very deep, meaningful, heart-to-heart after you left.

Ashley: Really?

Tucker: No. But I made a couple of inroads with him.

Ashley: I don’t think so. I don’t think anybody can get through his thick skull. Honestly, I believe that common sense and brains skipped the men in my family.

Tucker: You’re in a mood. You should’ve stuck around for breakfast in bed.

Ashley: I wish. But how could I? My brother’s destroying my family, our company, our legacy. I’m the only one that sees it and there doesn’t seem to be too much I can do about it.

Tucker: Mm. I can think of something, at least in the short term, you could do just to distract yourself for a moment. I mean, you, uh, you invited me to live with you, and not just because you adore me, right? But to tick off, what’s his name over there?

Ashley: I don’t want to tick him off. I want to wake him up. I want him to see that he’s an idiot.

Tucker: Well, let’s wake him up and make him see that he’s an idiot.

Ashley: You still have your suite?

Tucker: I do, ready and waiting.

Ashley: Excellent.

Tucker: Shall we?

Ashley: Yeah.

[ Tucker clearing his throat ]

Tucker: He can see us, right?

Ashley: Mm-hmm.

Michael: You could have sold tickets to that? Sorry.

Jack: You know what? It’s not my problem. I cannot waste my time playing games when the woman I love desperately needs my help. Michael, we can find the evidence we need. Look, every question we’ve had, every– every obstacle we found has revealed one thing. We have not begun to scratch the surface of what happened to phyllis that night. If we can just find some truths, we can pull back some layers.

Michael: All right. I will reach out to my contacts today about the security footage and the phone records, right?

Jack: Thank you. And look, I– I know you’re concerned–

Michael: No, well, look, every brilliant attorney has his moments of doubt. But I’m gonna give this my all.

Jack: You will. So will I. We have to help diane. I’m going to do everything I can to prove that she’s innocent. I don’t want this ever to go to trial.

Audra: What are you gonna do?

Elena: Go to L.A., Catch them in the act, make a scene, throw his clothes in the middle of the street, call him, yell at him.

Audra: All valid options.

Elena: What I’m not gonna do is nothing. Not this time. You offered me an option once.

Audra: Yeah, but you turned it down. Said you didn’t like to play games.

Elena: Yeah, well, obviously the circumstances have changed. I think it’s time we find J.T. Hellstrom.

Tucker: Hello.

Ashley: Hello.

Tucker: Surprised?

Ashley: Yes.

[ Tucker chuckling ]

Tucker: You did ask me to move in with you. Did you not?

Ashley: I vaguely remember having that conversation with you. I just didn’t know it was gonna be tonight.

Tucker: Right. I thought I’d roll the dice. That is if your offer was serious and you meant it.

Ashley: Of course, I meant it. You belong here, as long as you behave.

Tucker: Oh. Is that the real reason why you invited me here?

Ashley: Maybe.

Tucker: You want me to be here?

Michael: Hm. Thank you. So, how was your day?

Lauren: Fine. My day was fine.

Michael: That sounds interesting. The weather’s nice. Feels like summer might come early this year.

Lauren: That’s what we’re gonna talk about? The weather?

Michael: I was hoping we could try to renew some sense of normalcy, you know, get things back the way they were. That appears not to be possible, especially in this place. It’s way too much pain, it’s in the air.

Lauren: I think it’s the perfect place to talk about what’s going on. Because this is the last place we saw phyllis alive.

Michael: Do you want to talk about phyllis?

Lauren: Yes, I do want to talk about phyllis. I have been trying to contain myself and I can’t do it anymore. How do you justify defending the woman who murdered our best friend?

[ Jack sighing ]

Jack: Working late? I like to see it.

Billy: Hey, I, uh, sorry, I commandeered the big chair. I just wanted to stay on top of things in your absence. I know that you’re dealing with other things.

Jack: Please, please proceed. I like seeing you here. You are the co-C.E.O. Thank god somebody is here that can focus on the company, keep it running smoothly. I– I can’t give it my full attention these days.

Billy: Yeah. Well, I can, uh, you know, I can get you up to speed on a few things that could use your attention. You know what? I’ll send you an email in the morning. Nothing crazy. Everything’s good. You know, just the way it looks–

Jack: Yeah.

Billy: Sales figures, that kind of thing.

Jack: Yeah.

Billy: Jack, why are you here?

Jack: I needed a diversion, some sense of normalcy. I– I just came from seeing diane.

Billy: Really? I thought kyle said she didn’t want to see anyone.

Jack: Yeah, well, I chose to ignore her. I told her I refused to let this thing come between us, to tear us apart. What’s more, I told her that I wanted to marry her now more than ever and I wanted to do it right away.

Billy: And what did she say?

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: Mom?

Daniel: It’s just me. I came back to check on you.

Tucker: You cracked the door open just enough for me to believe that maybe we can make it work this time around.

Ashley: Maybe being the operative word. You know, there’s no guarantees.

Tucker: I know. But I’m glad that we both agreed that this is at least worth exploring. And uh, anyway, it was a very romantic gesture to offer to share your home with me and I’m– I’m rather looking forward to seeing the look on jack’s face when he–

Ashley: Yeah.

Tucker: When he sees me coming down the stairs for breakfast.

Ashley: I don’t want to talk about jack right now.

Tucker: Sure.

Ashley: Let’s not do it. Don’t you want to see your new pad, your new home?

Tucker: Yes, please show me. It’s very nice.

Ashley: Come on. Come on, bring your stuff. These are the stairs.

Tucker: Wow, you can go up?

Ashley: Yes.

Tucker: What about down?

Ashley: Uh-huh.

Michael: Oh, come on. You don’t really believe that. You don’t honestly think that I am defending a woman who cost phyllis her life?

Lauren: I do. Christine is sure that she is to blame and chance is damn good at his job. Do you remember when diane was cuffed and hauled out of here and she begged you to represent her and you refused, as you should? That was your gut telling you, you should not give that woman the benefit of the doubt.

Michael: You’re right. You’re right. How could I not? I was reeling. We all were. We had just found out that phyllis had been poisoned.

Lauren: And after jack pleaded with you personally, you still refused. What superseded your reluctance? Your enormous ego?

Michael: How could you even say that?

Lauren: Because I remember you telling me that victor and nikki were giving you a hard time for even thinking about defending diane. So what was this, the ultimate pushback to prove that you can make your own decisions?

Michael: You hold on now. That is a gross oversimplification. I would not just blithely sacrifice my job with victor because my fragile and enormous ego was bruised.

Lauren: Then tell me. Tell me what it was? Because it certainly seems that your desire to prove a point was more important than everything, including my feelings. You knew exactly how I would react with you defending diane and you went and you did it anyway.

Billy: So you asked diane to marry you, right then and there? And she didn’t give you an answer?

Jack: Nope. I’m not sure why. I thought that offering to marry her now would make her see that my faith in her is unshakeable. That I could make her see that I deeply believe she was coming home. That any day now, we could start to rebuild this new chapter in our lives that– that we dreamed about.

Billy: Yeah. Well, you know, jack, I’m– I’m sure she’s scared, you know, and overwhelmed. I’m not surprised that she put the brakes on. She’s trying to get through her life right now, hour by hour.

Jack: I know– I know all that. That’s why I’m doing everything I can to give her some sense of comfort.

Billy: Yeah, I know. I’m sure she appreciates that, but I can’t imagine she was prepared for you to show up and say, “let’s get hitched right now”, you know. As much as she loves you, and she does love you, that is pretty impulsive.

Jack: Yeah, I will admit to that.

Billy: Look, maybe she’s thinking that there’s more to this than you asking her to marry you.

Jack: Meaning what?

Billy: I think it’s pretty clear that you think things are spinning out of control right now and maybe this is your attempt to desperately find something that you can control.

Jack: Billy, the last thing I need right now is you analyzing me. My suggestion did not come out of the blue. We are engaged. I fully intend to spend the rest of my life with her. I was simply moving up the timetable.

Billy: Why don’t you just slow down a little bit, okay? This isn’t something you can outrun, jack.

Jack: What are you talking about? What am I trying to outrun?

Billy: Not that long ago, you were ready to spend the rest of your life with someone else. Someone that you loved deeply. You called her red, and now she’s gone and I don’t think you’ve even begun to mourn that loss yet.

Daniel: You are overwhelmed and emotional and I think I know what’s going on. I haven’t told anyone this, but I see mom too. I see her all the time. Someone walking by me on the street and– and my heart, it skips a beep.

Summer: This wasn’t like that, daniel. This was real.

Daniel: I know that it seems that way. I mean, those fleeting moments, they– they feel real to me too. But our mind, it plays tricks on us, especially in a stressful situation like this. And I think that’s why mom, she comes to me in my dreams and you know, when I’m alone, sometimes I find myself talking to her. I don’t know, it’s just my way of trying to hold on to her, I guess. Trying to still feel close and connected with her. I just keep thinking about the way she died and going over and over all the unanswered questions.

Summer: What if I had answers to those questions? Moderate to severe eczema

Jack: Once again, you have misconstrued things. My desire to marry diane is quite separate from my need to mourn phyllis.

Billy: With all due respect, I– I disagree, jack. It seems like to me, you’re avoiding your pain and your grief by simply focusing on your future with diane.

Jack: Believe me, I have grieved. I poured my heart out at that memorial service. I am not in denial.

Billy: I’m not saying you are, but what I am saying is that you’re not really allowing yourself to understand what’s going on inside of you. I mean, everything has been moving at warp speed since that gala. I’m sure you haven’t had a second to even take a breath.

Jack: God, that is the truth. That party was so chaotic and the chaos hasn’t stopped since.

Billy: No, it’s been a nonstop nightmare.

Jack: No sooner were we passed the trauma of phyllis’s memorial service, and diane was arrested.

Billy: And you’re gonna do what you do, you’re gonna make sure everyone else is okay. From diane and kyle to daniel and summer, without taking a second for yourself.

Jack: Yeah, I suppose part of that might be true.

Billy: You know what? You and phyllis, you weren’t in the best place when she died and I would imagine that would make her loss even harder. Jack, I think you gotta allow yourself to acknowledge who phyllis was to you. How much she meant to you. You two had a rich, deep history and you got to allow yourself the time to grieve that.

Summer: What I know now is that… everything that we believe to be true is a lie. Mom’s not dead.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: Summer, I know that you really want to believe that mom’s not dead. I do too.

Summer: Daniel, just listen to me, please. I know that it sounds crazy, but is it really that hard to believe that not everything is as it seems?

Daniel: We saw mom collapse in front of us. Nate and elena, they weren’t pretending to try and help her. They did everything that they could to save her and now we know that she was poisoned and the ambulance crashed and burned. I mean, there’s not a person in this world that could survive all of that.

Summer: What if she survived? And it was all a part of this scheme that was orchestrated by jeremy stark. I mean, you thought that he was involved from the beginning, didn’t you?

Daniel: Yes. But I– I–

Summer: Don’t you see, can’t you see it? He played on all of mom’s emotions. He forced her to be part of his plan for revenge against diane. And frame diane for murder. Mom didn’t have a choice. And even though she regretted things that she’s done, she was– she was trapped.

Daniel: Look, even if any of that is true, why wouldn’t mom come home now? They found stark’s body, she’d be free to come back to us.

Summer: Not if she was the one that killed him.

Daniel: Oh my god, summer. Oh, my god.

Summer: Daniel, listen to me. It was an accident. She was trying to get away from him and she can’t come back to us because then she would be arrested for his murder.

Daniel: If it was self-defense, why wouldn’t she come back and explain everything?

Summer: Because who would believe her? Who would believe her? She would be the one in jail right now for murder instead of diane. Daniel, we have to do something. I don’t know– I don’t know what, but we have to do something. We can’t just let our mom slip away from us forever.

Michael: That’s not at all the way it happened. I didn’t just deliberately take diane’s case to go against your wishes.

Lauren: Then why did you?

Michael: It was victor and nikki’s rush to judgment. They had diane tried and convicted without any awareness of the facts. They didn’t just suspect diane was to blame for phyllis’s murder, they knew it.

Lauren: So, who cares what victor and nikki think, right?

Michael: That’s when I realized that’s just the kind of jury that diane’s gonna go up against in court. A bunch of biased people who have already made up their mind. Everybody deserves legal representation. Guilty or innocent and they deserve an attorney who works to make sure that the system is– that the system works fairly for everybody.

Lauren: Well, I can’t argue with that.

Michael: Exactly.

Lauren: But there are other top attorneys that could have defended her. Lawyers with no emotional ties.

Michael: I think I’m a good attorney because of my emotional ties and you are partially to blame for that. It is why I’m passionate about what I do.

Lauren: Not this time. This is phyllis, our best friend, the victim, the woman who has gone through hell with us.

Michael: You know she meant the world to me.

Lauren: And yet you choose not to fight for her, but her killer could go free because of you. And if that happens, I don’t know if I can ever look at you again.

Daniel: Summer, I know how hard it is to let go. I’m dealing with it, okay? And I want you to know that I love you and I will be here for you every step of the way. I will.

Summer: You think I’m a wreck, don’t you? You think I’m out of my mind?

Daniel: I think that you have to admit it is a pretty wild string of theories. But I understand. I get why you would be so desperate for there to be something that would tell us that mom’s still out there somewhere.

Summer: She is. I saw her.

Daniel: If only that were true, it would make everything easier between you and kyle and it would probably fix the whole problem with diane.

Summer: It would change everything.

Danie: Yeah, it would. And that’s a nice thought, but it isn’t real. And it’s not healthy for us to be obsessing over things that aren’t gonna happen, summer. You and kyle, you’re gonna be fine. Right now, there is absolutely nothing that either one of us can do. You should really go home and get some rest. Come on. Just let me–

Summer: So you just don’t believe me? You’re not even willing to consider that I’m telling the truth. God, I just wish– I wish that there was a way to show you. I want to prove it to you. Mom! Mom!

[ Summer sobbing ]

Daniel: It’s okay. It’s okay.

[ Summer sniffling ]

Jack: For better or worse, there was never anyone like phyllis. There never will be anyone like her again.

Billy: No. No, she’s a one-of-a-kind. And that’s a good thing because I don’t think this world could handle another phyllis summers.

[ Phone ringing ] That’s chelsea. Do you mind if I–

Jack: Yeah, yeah, yeah, go.

Billy: Hey, chels, what’s up?

Jack: I cannot imagine going through life without you. Whatever problems we have, I want to fix them with you. Whatever obstacles life puts in our way, I want us to take them on together. Marry me.

Phyllis: I still–

Jack: Then– then there’s really only one word to say. Say yes.

Phyllis: Yes. Yes.

Jack: Yes, yes. Yes, you– you will marry me?

Phyllis: Just put this on, put this on quick, please. Before I come to my senses, just do it. So, you just want to throw in the towel because of one setback?

Jack: This is not a small setback. And I have you now, I can hold you, I can kiss you. I can spend the rest of my life–

Phyllis: No jack! Jack, something is missing. We don’t have a baby. We won’t have a baby.

Jack: We have each other. We have each other. That’s enough. That’s enough for me.

Phyllis: If anybody was a fool, it was me. I was a fool. Anybody who sleeps with a married man is an idiot. I know you hate me and I understand that, but see, we can get past this stuff. People do this. And that– that thing with nicholas, it– it just– it just happened, jack.

Jack: That thing with nicholas didn’t just happen. See, first, you have to take off your clothes.

Phyllis: Listen, I never meant to hurt you. I honestly didn’T.

Jack: You know what? You’re absolutely right. Anything you say right now would be meaningless. Yeah, I know, you love hanging out with me. You know what though? We’re gonna get you out of here and we’re gonna get you to a hospital and you’re gonna have this little girl. And she’s gonna have a full head of red hair.

Phyllis: And nick will see her born.

Jack: Yeah, I could use a sub. Think I need a breather, coach.

Phyllis: I hope you didn’t mean that.

Jack: Why? What?

Phyllis: Because my water just broke.

Jack: What?

Phyllis: I don’t even know if I’m the right person to help you through this, but I’m here and I’m staying. Unless you want ashley or– or tracy to come up, we can call them?

Jack: No no, no, I don’t want anybody else. Look, I know– I know I keep saying this over and over again, I couldn’t do this without you, red. Maybe the reason I didn’t move on with my romantic life was because I already was with the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. Maybe you set the bar too high, red.

[ Phyllis chuckling ]

Phyllis: Listen, I don’t– I don’t think you should say things that you– you might not mean.

Jack: I’m not saying this because I’ve had too much to drink. I’m saying it because it’s true. I have never stopped loving you and I don’t think I ever will. This isn’t charmin!

Announcer: The young and the restless will continue. (Vo) is she tired? Sad? Bored?

Tucker: Home sweet home.

Ashley: You didn’t bring a lot with you.

Tucker: Yeah, I haven’t officially checked out of the athletic club.

Ashley: I see. So you didn’t think that my invitation was sincere?

Tucker: Can you blame me?

Ashley: No.

Tucker: I have a question though, about the arrangements. Jack is not the only one who lives here besides you. How are the others gonna react?

Ashley: Yeah. Yeah, it’s gonna be awkward, right? But you know what? They’re gonna adapt because everybody in this household has bigger things on their mind than you. And besides, I mean, if you haven’t noticed it’s a pretty big place.

Tucker: It seems like it, yeah. Well, I promise I’ll– I’ll try to give tracy and carla and summer all the breathing room they need.

Ashley: I hope that doesn’t mean you’re gonna hole off somewhere and be a hermit.

Tucker: Does that sound like me?

Ashley: No, but maybe I can see you somewhere sitting in your new sanctuary, nursing your favorite beverage. Brooding, perhaps.

Tucker: Why would you go there?

Ashley: Because the tucker mccall I know doesn’t handle being at loose ends well. So, I’m just thinking maybe you should start thinking about what you want to do next.

Tucker: Hm.

Michael: I understand exactly how you feel. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I knew I had let phyllis’s murderer walk. But I truly believe diane’s telling the truth. Look, I’ve known a lot of bald faced liars in my life, yeah. And I have developed excellent radar for the art of lying and diane is telling the truth. She believes she’s innocent. That’s why, to her, the only logical conclusion is that she was set up. Unfortunately, the man to blame for that will never pay for his crime.

Lauren: And if jeremy stark is at fault, then why the hell would he be allowed to get away with that?

Michael: Because his body just washed up on a shore of a nearby lake.

Lauren: What?

Michael: I’m afraid so. And now I’m left with more questions than before. You can’t get answers from a dead man. The fact that I can’t call jeremy stark to the stand makes it a hell of a lot harder to keep diane out of prison. But I’m not gonna let that happen because that means stark would win, even from the grave.

Billy: You okay?

Jack: Yeah, I– I– I will be, eventually. It may take some time for me to grasp that I will never see phyllis again. Still longer to accept that– that long beautiful story ended in so much anger and resentment.

Billy: I know it’s difficult jack, but I think it’s important that you acknowledge what she meant to you in your life.

Jack: You were right. When did you get so wise? You were spot on. I needed to look back before I could begin to look forward.

Billy: I’m glad I could be of service.

Jack: You were wrong on one front.

Billy: Oh?

Jack: I am more determined, more eager than ever to marry diane and not as a diversion from mourning over phyllis. As an acknowledgment that life is short. Life is fragile. Life is too precious to waste another minute. I can’t let her shut me out. I can’t lose her, not now.

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: I know that you feel like you’ve got to do the big brother thing and protect me, but I– it’s not what I need.

Daniel: I don’t– I don’t see it like that. I am not trying to be your big brother. I just think that we need to look out for each other right now.

Summer: But you’re looking at me like I’m crazy. I haven’t had a psychotic break with reality. I promise you that.

Daniel: But what you’re telling me–

Summer: I know! I know that it sounds impossible. I mean, what do I have to do to prove it to you? I mean, do you need– do you need to see mom with your own two eyes? Could I have her call you or something?

Daniel: Call me? Are you making plans to see mom again, summer?

Summer: No. No, I don’t have plans to see mom again, but I know that I’m going to, and you will too. I don’t know when, I don’t know where but she’s gonna come back.

Daniel: I wanna believe you, summer. I wanna believe you more than anything, but it’s not gonna happen. She’s gone. Mom is gone, she’s gone! New vibrant from air wick.

Daniel: Summer, I am sorry. I am not trying to be dismissive and the last thing I want to do right now is hurt you.

Summer: This isn’t about my feelings. This is about the truth. I talked to her. She told me what happened.

Daniel: Okay. Okay, let’s play this out. We take this story to christine and to chance, okay? We tell them that diane’s innocent, stark, he’s guilty and he’s murdered by the hand of mom, who somehow miraculously is still alive. What then, huh? What do you think’s gonna happen? They’re either gonna react the same way I did or they’re gonna pursue it. Now if they pursue it, we’ve got two possible outcomes. They hit a brick wall, we wind up right back where we started–

Summer: Or they find her. And they bring her home to us.

Daniel: But if they find her, highly unlikely. But say that they find her, what do you think is gonna happen? They’re gonna arrest her, they’re gonna charge her with murder. They’re gonna put her on trial and then diane’s gonna be set free, mom’s gonna be locked up in jail.

Summer: So you’re saying there’s nothing we can do?

Lauren: I don’t doubt that stark played a part in what happened to phyllis. I mean, that sudden ludicrous marriage? That raised all sorts of suspicions in me. But he’s just a low-life criminal and I will not shed a tear for him.

Michael: But?

Lauren: But even if he’s guilty, that does not make diane blameless. You and I both know diane’s hatred of phyllis was real. So, no, I will not share in your belief in her.

Michael: You don’t have to believe in diane. You just have to believe in me. I would never betray you and phyllis that way. You are two of the strongest, most resilient, most determined women I have ever met. That’s why I’m doing this. Seeking justice for diane and phyllis. They both deserve to have the true story told. I believe what I’m doing is right and decent. Why can’t you have faith in me?

Ashley: Cheers.

Tucker: Cheers.

Ashley: When you sold mccall, it was a very big deal.

Tucker: Yeah.

Ashley: Right. I mean, the company is a part of you, body and soul. I’m sure you could look at it, no matter what was going on in your life. You could say, “I built that, that’s my legacy.” It gave you a sense of purpose, success.

Tucker: Yeah, it did. Nobody can take that away from me.

Ashley: That’s true. And your whole identity was kind of tied up in mccall so that when you sold it to victor, I mean, you kind of have to figure out who you are now. Look, I’m just a little concerned that if you don’t have a plan, you’re gonna end up regretting your decision.

Tucker: No, no, no, no, I’m letting go of the past, fully. The future feels wide open, I’m kind of excited about it. And it’s not as if I’m out here wandering aimlessly.

Ashley: Okay. So what’s your plan?

Tucker: Okay, here’s the plan. Are you ready?

Ashley mm-hmm.

Tucker: I’ve got some unfinished business here in genoa city. I’ve got some refocused priorities.

Ashley: Like?

Tucker: Like devon for one. Rebuilding his trust, getting to know my grandson a little better.

Ashley: Yes.

Tucker: And then there’s ashley.

Ashley: Of course.

Tucker: Yeah. Making myself irresistible to her. That’s gonna be a full-time job.

Ashley: Yes.

Tucker: Hm. I’m gonna have to wine and dine her all over the world.

Ashley: Yes.

Tucker: Ply her with my unique brand of charm, which no woman in the world can resist.

Ashley: Hm. Well, that sounds very exciting.

Tucker: Yes, you should meet her.

Ashley: But I think that you might have to have something else in mind besides that.

Tucker: No, no, no. I’m planning on seducing her 24/7. I’m just gonna have to take some breaks for sustenance, but… beyond–

[ Door opening ]

[ Door shutting ] Just between us, you know what’s better than mopping?

Tucker: Jack, hello.

Ashley: Tucker’s my guest, jack, and you should probably get used to seeing him more often around here.

Jack: And why would that be?

Ashley: Because I asked him to move in.

Jack: Tucker?

Ashley: Yes. Tucker. You keep telling me that your personal life is none of my concern, so I figured it must work both ways.

Tucker: That went well.

Lauren: I do have faith in you. That will never change. But even if diane doesn’t have blood on her hands, I will never see her as innocent because she made phyllis’s last months a living nightmare. And I know– I know phyllis brought a lot of that on herself, but she paid too dearly. Because of diane, phyllis left us way too soon. You know what? You’re right. We shouldn’t be here. This is just too painful.

Daniel: I feel just as lost as you do. And honestly, I don’t think there’s a single thing that either one of us can do to fix it. I promise you, we will get through this together. You and me because that’s what mom would want.

Summer: Is this for real? Mom, are you real?

Phyllis: I’m real. I’m so sorry.

[ Summer crying ]

Summer: I don’t under– I don’t understand. Wha– what’ happening? What’s happening?

Audra: I’ll confirm the venue for the meeting next month with the vendors. Anything else I should be aware of?

Nate: I’ll be heading to L.A. For a few days. I need you to run point for me.

Audra: Vacation?

Nate: Not this time. There are some streaming platforms out west newman’s looking to acquire. If all goes well, they’ll be folded into newman media. I believe in-person meetings are key to a successful negotiation.

Audra: Sounds brilliant.

Nate: New challenge. I’m looking forward to it.

Audra: Well, I’m pleased you trust me enough to leave me in charge.

Nate: Well, that goes without saying.

Audra: Given the choice, though, um, I’d rather accompany you. You know, this could be a learning opportunity for me.

[ Nate chuckling ]

Nate: I appreciate your enthusiasm, audra, but I need you here, holding down the fort.

Audra: Look, I’m sure victoria would be okay with it. This trip could be a valuable experience.

Nate: I think it’s great you want to master every aspect of the job. Really, I do. But the thing is, I’ll be doing that myself. Acting as second under victoria. She’ll be traveling with me.

Nick: Just wait ’til you hear dad’s latest move.

Victoria: If it’s about him finalizing his deal with tucker so adam can have a new toy to break, I already know.

Nick: Close. The two are related.

Victoria: Okay, I give up. What has dad done now?

Nick: He wants me to take an immediate leave of absence as coo.

Victoria: Excuse me?

[ Victoria scoffing ] Why would he even suggest something like that? I need you here.

[ Nick sighing ]

Nick: He wants me to run mccall unlimited with adam or whatever it is they plan on calling it. But he seems to think the company needs me to get it back on its feet.

Victoria: This is what he meant when he warned me that I would regret not buying mccall.

[ Sighing ] He wants to steal my entire team right out from underneath me.

Michael: Hey. Thanks for meeting me here so quickly. Sit, sit, sit.

Jack: No thanks needed. I know you just came from seeing diane. Hopefully, you have some good news for me.

Michael: Well, I have news. I’m afraid it’s not good.

Jack: Okay, I’m listening.

Michael: I have a contact in the coroner’s office in the jurisdiction near pheasant lake.

Jack: Where they found stark’s body.

Michael: Um, off the record, she has agreed to share his presumed manner of death.

Jack: So suicide? Accidental drowning? Have they done a toxicology screening?

Michael: Jack, they’re doing an autopsy. Until it’s finished, none of these findings are conclusive. But according to my source, it appears to be a homicide.

Phyllis: Hey, baby. I know it’s a shock. I know it’s a shock.

Summer: I got– I got this call from somebody offering to explain what happened to my mom. But I didn’t know that it was you. It didn’t sound like you.

Phyllis: I was in a coffee shop, and I– I gave the waitress some money. She’s the one who called you. That was the only way I could know that you would get here alone.

Summer: Oh, my god. Daniel, he was just–

Phyllis: No, no, no. We’re not calling da– shh, shh. We’re not calling daniel. You’re the only one who can know I’m alive.

Summer: Not even daniel?

Phyllis: No, not even daniel. I can’t trust him.

Summer: What? What do you mean?

Phyllis: It’s not that he’s not trustworthy. Listen, baby, he’s going through so much right now and he might want to do the right thing, you know what I mean? And tell people about my secret.

Summer: No. Daniel is going through hell right now, mom.

Phyllis: Summer, listen to me. You’re the only one who can know that I’m alive. I mean it. You’re the only one I can trust. You’re the only one who can know what happened. And what I need to do because of it from this moment forward.

[ Phyllis sniffling ]

Audra: I had no idea. You know, I see you as such a pro, I forget you’re on a learning curve, too. Maybe I can tag along on the next trip.

Nate: Thanks for understanding.

Audra: I’ll hold the ship afloat while you’re gone.

Nate: I appreciate that, audra.

Audra: Oh, you know, I wonder if elena might be able to join you, you know, since she couldn’t make it last time. I bet she will love to go.

Nick: I hadn’t thought about inviting elena. I wouldn’t want to seem unprofessional by asking if my girlfriend could tag along.

Audra: Oh, um, I’m sorry. I might have misunderstood. I just thought that you invited her last time you were traveling on business.

Nick: I did. Good thing she couldn’t make it because it was nonstop work. She would have been bored stiff.

Jack: Homicide?

Michael: Apparently.

Jack: How is that– how can they know for sure?

Michael: No longer being the D.A., I can only get so much information. My source was taking a risk by telling me as much as she did.

Jack: Wow. There’s a lot to wrap my head around.

Michael: Yeah, join the club.

Jack: If they think it’s murder, there’s going to be a full out investigation, right?

Michael: By the local sheriff’s department? Yes. Since the lake itself is in an unincorporated area.

Jack do the authorities have any leads? Can they tie phyllis’ murder to stark’s death in any way?

Michael: You know as much as I do, and I don’t have a whole lot to go on, jack. But what I do know, what I do know, in terms of diane’s defense, this is a double edged sword.

Jack: That makes no sense. I would think stark’s death would indicate there was much more at play. Especially if he’s murdered.

Michael: All right, listen–

Jack: Diane is out of commission. I mean, unless somebody thinks she’s a mob boss who can call a hit inside prison and have it carried out while she’s in there. No. Basic– basic intelligence would tell you she’s not involved in that. She didn’t kill stark, she didn’t kill phyllis. And this latest development–

Michael: Jack! Jack, until I learned more about stark’s murder, I don’t know what any of this means.

Jack: At least we know this guy can’t testify against her in court.

Michael: True. However, he also can’t exonerate her. We used to struggle with greasy messes.

Nick: Dad actually warned you about mccall and what would happen if you didn’t acquire it?

Victoria: It wasn’t so much a warning as an I told you so. Just tell me, please, that you turned down his offer.

Nick: Vic, come on. There’s no way I’m bailing on you to go and babysit adam. I’m pretty sure mom’s not going anywhere either.

Victoria: Can you imagine our mother and adam running a company together? That’ll be the day. So what else did dad have to share? Any other suggestions that I should know about?

Nick: Uh, didn’t learn much, except that mccall seems to be in shambles, and… he thinks adam’s going to need the full support of the family to write the ship.

Victoria: He’s gonna need a lot more than that.

Nick: I actually think this was just some play to get me and adam to back away from sally.

Victoria: Yes, that seems about right.

Nick: Once I realized what he was up to, I rejected his offer and walked out.

Victoria: You know, leave it to our father to buy an entire conglomerate so he can try to manipulate all the people around him.

Nick: He doesn’t seem to know when he needs to let people manage their own lives. And with a baby on the way, it’s just going to get worse. He can’t see it. I mean, the more he pushes sally away, the more he risks being shut out of his granddaughter’s life.

Phyllis: Listen to me. Okayyou need to listen to me. I wish I could come home… but unfortunately, it can’t happen.

Summer: Why? None of this makes any sense.

[ Phyllis sighing ]

Phyllis: I made some mistakes. [ Sighing ] I did some stupid things. I trusted the wrong man.

Summer: Stark?

Phyllis: Yeah.

Summer: Tell me what happened.

Phyllis: He manipulated me, you know? Um… he played on my deepest, darkest fears, you know? And he convinced me to marry him and then we had this plan to take diane down and put her in prison for the rest of her life.

Summer: Mom… what have you done?

Phyllis: I don’t know. I’m just being honest with you. I’m just being honest, summer.

Summer: How did you think that it was gonna–

Phyllis: I wasn’t thinking. I was out of my mind. I wasn’t thinking. Then, when I finally came to my senses… and I told him I didn’t want to go forward with the plan anymore, he threatened me. He was gonna kill me.

Jack: The more I think about it, the more I believe that stark’s death proves diane didn’t kill phyllis.

Michael: I don’t understand your logic, jack. Yeah, I agree that diane being in jail rules her out as a suspect in stark’s murder, but how? How does that absolve her of phyllis’s death?

Jack: To me, it’s obvious. Phyllis is poisoned. Days later, stark is murdered. That’s just a coincidence? Come on, one person could have killed both of them.

Michael: There’s no evidence to suggest that.

Jack: Yet. And maybe there never will be any. But think about it. Stark is a known criminal, out on parole, involved in fraud and money laundering and god knows what else on an international scale. He’s been hanging out with some very dangerous people who are experts at hiding evidence. Maybe he crossed one of them. His past caught up with him and phyllis. Michael: I get why stark would be the target of a killer, but why phyllis?

Jack: I don’t know. Diane was never certain where stark got the funding to carry out his schemes. Whoever he was dealing with back then maybe felt shorted when he went to prison and they wanted their money back. And maybe that was the money that he was pressuring diane for.

Michael: If that were the case, why wouldn’t stark have taken the money you offered him initially?

Jack: No, that was a direct response to diane. A not-so-veiled threat that this is about more than just money.

Michael: Even if your theory were correct, despite the lack of evidence, it only accounts for a hit on stark. Again, why phyllis?

Jack: She was his new wife. Whoever these people are came to town knowing that his former partner in crime lived in genoa city. Maybe they thought that was phyllis.

Michael: It was diane.

Jack: Well, we know that. They thought they were looking for taylor jensen. Any woman in town could have been taylor jensen. Maybe phyllis’s murder is a case of mistaken identity. Maybe she’s just collateral damage.

Michael: Jack, I know you’re looking for an answer, but that is not it. There is a mountain of evidence that exists, and it points to a premeditated crime perpetrated by diane.

Jack: I will do anything I can to get justice for phyllis. I feel she deserves at least that from me. Diane didn’t do this. I have to defend her.

Michael: Okay, jack, the two of us are committed to the same two causes. Justice for phyllis and diane. But right now, we only know one thing. Diane is the only suspect in phyllis’s murder that is still alive to talk about it.

Nate: Hi.

Elena: Hey. Your message said you have some news. What’s up?

Nate: I have to go home and pack.

Elena: Okay. Why? I’m heading to L.A. For work.

Elena: For how long?

Nate: Just a few days. But when I get back, I would love to go somewhere with you. A short vacation, you know? One week, just the two of us. Where would you like to go?

Elena: Okay, wait, back up. So, you’re going away on business?

Nate: Wall to wall meetings out west with some streamers we’d like to acquire. But I realize what I really want to do right now is get away with you somewhere. You know? No work involved.

Elena: I see.

Nate: We’ve been kicking it around for quite a while now. Why not make it happen?

Elena: We can discuss it. But who is we?

Nate: What do you mean?

Elena: Well, you just said that there are some streamers on the west coast that we would like to acquire, so I’m wondering, are you going alone or are you going with someone else?

Victoria: You know, it makes no difference what you and sally think. Once that baby arrives, there’s no way in hell that you’re gonna be able to keep it away from dad. Not to mention, this is not your fight. Sally and adam are the parents, so really, it’s up to them.

Nick: Thank you for the reminder.

Victoria: It’s the truth, nick. Hey, um, I’m gonna be going to los angeles for a couple of days, and I need you to take the reins. I hope that’s not too much to ask.

Nick: Sure. Mom going with you?

Victoria: No, she’ll be here.

Nick: Well, she’s the co-ceo. Shouldn’t she be in charge?

Victoria: Look, we both know how much she loves seeing you in more of a leadership role. So the job is yours for a couple of days. Deal with it.

[ Nick chuckling ]

Nick: Okay. Um… you going alone?

Victoria: No. Did you have a chance to look over those p&l reports that I sent you?

Nick: Hold up. If mom’s not going out of town, who are you going with? Don’t tell me–

Victoria: I know what I’m doing, nick. Leave it alone.

Summer: Why didn’t you come to me before? Why didn’t you tell me that stark was making threats? Jack got all this extra security for us. He could have had you covered, too.

Phyllis: Jack wouldn’t have lifted a finger for me. And then, you and daniel… I thought you hated me. I thought everyone hated me.

[ Summer sighing ] And that prompted me to do something really… stupid and idiotic, you know?

Summer: Mom, daniel and I, we never hated you. Yes, we disagreed with you, but, mom, we love you. We’ve been wrecks since that night.

Phyllis: I know. I know. I’ve been watching you. I saw how much pain you were in. I’m so sorry. [ Sobbing ] That’s why I needed to meet with you. I wanted you to know that I am okay. I couldn’t go through with it. And listen, I understand. I really understand if you and your brother hate me and never want to forgive me.

Summer: No, no. Those days are over, mom. That’s not gonna happen. We are on your side, no matter what.

[ Phyllis sighing ]

Phyllis: Summer… when you find out what I did… I don’t think you’re gonna feel that way. I don’t think you’re gonna be on my side.

Summer: Mom… how guilty are you? Welcome to my digestive system.

Nick: You telling me to leave it alone makes me ten times more concerned.

Victoria: Okay, let me make this easy for you. As ceo of newman media, nate will be accompanying me to los angeles. The meetings that we will be attending pertain to the various streaming platforms that we would like to acquire. While I could certainly handle them on my own, it makes sense that the head of newman media would be present, don’t you think?

Nick: I’m sure you know all of the reasons why this is a terrible idea.

Victoria: And I’m sure that you’re aware that I’m really not interested in your opinion.

Nate: So yeah, I’ll be on my own in california.

Elena: Sounds dull. Wish I could join you.

Nate: Too last minute, huh?

Elena: Yeah, but when you get back, I should be able to take some time off.

Nate: Great. Any thoughts on where you’d like to go?

Elena: No, but I’ll look into it while you’re away. Maybe something scenic, maybe something intimate. You have any preferences?

Nate: Surprise me. As long as I’m with you, I’ll be happy.

Elena: That’s really sweet of you.

Nate: Okay, let me get home and figure out what I’m packing.

Elena: Mm, I hear cali’s having a heat wave, so it should be pretty hot.

Nate: I will keep that in mind. Bye-bye.

Phyllis: Well, what I did, it’s not important. The important thing is that jeremy stark manipulated the whole situation to make it look like…

[ Sighing ] It was all me. If anybody found out about what we did, I would be the one who would be implicated.

Summer: So… none of it was real? The poison, the… the ambulance crash, it wasn’t–

Phyllis: No, it wasn’t real.

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: So, if you’re alive, and all of that was fake… that means that diane’s innocent.

Phyllis: Diane’s innocent? There’s nothing innocent about diane. Everything diane touches dies. Everything. She lies, manipulates. She drives wedges between people. Good god, you know that now. Jack and ashley, me and jack, you and me, you and kyle. You’re either on diane’s side or you are her victim.

Summer: I know, I know. God. I know diane has been causing problems for me and kyle way before this.

Phyllis: And the worst thing she did, she let her son believe that she was dead for years and years. He’s still dealing with the aftermath of that.

Summer: You just did that exact thing. Mom, you faked your own death. You– you– you abandoned your children.

Phyllis: My children are adults. They’re not little kids. And I couldn’t go through with it. I’m here now. But diane let kyle believe that she was dead for years. I would never do that to a little child, who doesn’t understand death or loss.

Summer: God, just… I can’t believe that your priorities are so out of whack that you would let us all suffer like that. You would let the people who love you believe that you’re dead. No. Mom. You’re coming home with me, okay? You’re going to make things right with everyone in genoa city.

Phyllis: I can’t do that. You don’t know the whole story.

Summer: If it’s because of stark, if it’s because you’re afraid of him, you don’T… you don’t have to worry about that anymore. He’s dead, so he can’t hurt you. And everything else we can straighten out. I promise you that.

Phyllis: They found him. Oh, no, I thought I’d have more time.

Summer: Found him?

Phyllis: Jeremy stark is the reason I can’t return to genoa city. Because… I’m the reason he’s dead.

Jack: Hey, I’m sorry for coming by after visiting hours, but I pulled a few strings because this can’t wait.

Diane: Why are you here again?

Jack: I have news.

Diane: I told you I don’t want to see you. Nothing’s changed.

[ Sighing ] Why are you doing this to me?

Jack: I am here because I love you. Because we have spent too many years apart and I don’t want to spend another day without you. And I think the news I have might actually get you out of here.

Diane: I don’t want you here, jack. It’s not your choice. You don’t have a say. I’m the one in the cell. I’m the one who’s staring at these walls and I am telling you to stay away.

Jack: Once you hear what we’ve discovered–

Diane: You know what? I don’t care what it is. Michael can tell me.

[ Scoffing ] Don’t you get it? My life is over. There is nothing left to be done, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner we can all just move on.

Jack: Don’t do this. Don’t push away the people who love you. You can’t give up.

Diane: This is not about giving up. It’s about doing what’s best for my family and not subjecting you to the pain of my experiences. You all did just fine in the past without me being in your lives and you can do the same again. And that’s the way it has to be.

Summer: You didn’t– you didn’t kill jeremy stark.

Phyllis: I’m afraid I did.

Summer: Why? H– how?

Phyllis: You and daniel were in so much pain. I couldn’t go through with the plan. And then he told me if I pulled out of the plan and I sent him back to prison, well, he would never let that happen. And he said killing me was A… a victimless crime.

Summer: He said that to you?

Phyllis: Yeah, he did. He put his hands on me. And he said that I was his now.

Summer: Oh, my god, mom.

Phyllis: And the whole thing would cost me. And I tried to escape. And he stopped me. And he pushed me away. And he picked up scissors and he came toward me and he was gonna slice my throat. He was gonna kill me. Summer, I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t let it happen. I couldn’T. And he was strong, but I was desperate. I was desperate, and I took my nails and I put them into his face. And I took those scissors.

[ Gasping ] And it went black. I don’t even remember. I don’t even remember, but it went black. And I looked down and he was in a pool of blood. I killed him to protect myself.

[ Summer exhaling ] I didn’t want to die.

Summer: What– what– what did you do then?

Phyllis: I cleaned up the room and I wrapped him in the shower curtain. I made it look like one of his criminal buddies from prison did it.

Summer: Oh…

[ Phyllis gasping ] I sealed my fate. I can never go home. I have to come up with a plan to fix this.

Summer: No, mom, I’m not gonna let you think like that. It’s not too late. We can go to the police and we can make them understand what happened.

Phyllis: No. Shh. Shh. Stop it. That’s not gonna happen. Okay? You got it? That’s not gonna happen. You must never, ever tell a soul about this.

Nick: You may not want my opinion, but I’m gonna give it to you anyway.

Victoria: Of course you are.

Nick: This is a mistake. You taking nate on this trip with you, you can call it business all you want.

Victoria: Because it is.

Nick: Are we really gonna play this game? You’re obviously involved with this guy.

Victoria: I have known nate for a long time. We’re friends. We’re colleagues. That’s it.

Nick: Oh, come on, vic.

Victoria: Stay out of it, nick. It’s none of your business.

[ Nick scoffing ]

Nick: You know, we both know when you mix business with pleasure, you tend to, uh, throw judgment out the window.

Victoria: I can’t believe you went there. Nate is nothing like ashland. And by the way, you’ve been in the same exact position before, so don’t be such a hypocrite.

Nick: How long do you think it’s gonna be before people realize you’re having a fling with your subordinate?

Victoria: Well, I don’t know. How long before people noticed that you and sally were together? (Vo) red lobster’s finer points of fun dining:

Nick: There are some clear and obvious differences with you and nate and me and sally, but let’s just forget about that for a second. I’m sure you think you have control of this situation. I think you’re playing with fire. Everything is going great for you right now, vic, but you feel like you gotta take this big risk.

Victoria: Don’t be ridiculous.

Nick: He’s got a girlfriend. He’s got this whole life outside of newman media. I mean, what are you doing? Are you working towards a relationship with this guy, or are you just having fun?

Victoria: You know, nick, just as you asked me to respect your privacy with sally, I would ask you for the same courtesy.

Nick: I care about you, all right?

Victoria: I care about you, too, even when you’re a complete knucklehead.

Nick: Well, I can’t shake the feeling that you’re about to blow up everything that you’ve worked so hard for.

Victoria: Well, I’m sorry. You’ll have to excuse me if I don’t see it that way. So, are we finished? I have a lot I have to do before I go to los angeles.

Nick: Yeah, sure. Safe travels. Of course, I will look after everything while you’re gone.

Victoria: I appreciate that.

Nick: I really hope you don’t end up regretting this trip.

[ Victoria sighing ]

Elena: This is dr. Dawson.

Audra: Hey, it’s audra. Uh, where are you? Did I catch you at a bad time?

Elena: Oh, I’m just catching up on some cases, and apparently I have to go home and help nate pack for his trip to los angeles. You know, things are actually getting better between us.

Audra: Really?

Elena: Yeah. He’s been really sweet lately. Um, if you have time for coffee tomorrow, I can catch you up on it.

Audra: Can’t wait.

Jack: I know you have spent a lot of your adult life on your own. Living a secret life with no one you could trust, no one you could count on. Was just you against the world. I am offering you a way out of that, if you will let me. My purpose these days, my purpose in life, is to be the man you can depend on. To do everything in my power to see that you walk out of here a free woman and I am not staying away. I’m not. Not now, not ever. And not because you need me. Because I need you.

Diane: Jack…

Jack: Marry me.

Diane: What?

Jack: I’m serious. We’re already engaged. Let’s seal the deal. Let’s do it now, sooner rather than later, before the trial. I want to be your husband through every moment of this ordeal. But you have to trust me. Believe in me. Marry me.

Phyllis: Listen to me. If you tell anyone that I am alive, diane will get off. And I will pay and pay and pay. The authorities will hunt me down. They will not stop until they find me and I will spend the rest of my life in prison, or I’ll be looking over my shoulder. Is that what you want for me?

Summer: I don’t want to lie to the people that I love. But I don’t want to lose you, either. I can’T. I can’t lose you again. I don’t have the strength to do that. Mom, I need you.

Phyllis: I’m sorry, baby. I’m sorry I put this in your hands. I’m sorry I put you in this position. It’s not fair.

Summer: No, it’s not fair. I’m just scared. I’m scared that if you don’t come with me right now and clear all of this up, I’m just scared that I’m never gonna see you again.

Phyllis: Ah, no, no. I don’t intend for that to happen. That will never happen, okay? All right? Hey, listen to me. It all boils down to this, okay? You either save your mother-in-law… or you save me. All right? Because if I reveal myself, diane will be exonerated and my life will be over. Or… you give me time to come up with a plan that works. Summer, all I need is time. I just need time, okay? Can you do that? Listen. Whatever you decide… I love you, supergirl. All right? Whatever you decide, I love you. I’ll never stop loving you. ‘Kay? I have to go.

[ Summer sniffling ]

Nate: Adam. You know I don’t practice medicine anymore.

Adam: Ah. You’re right. You quit being a doctor to do something really important. Run a media company.

Adam: That’s good. From my experience, you have everything you need to be successful at that company.

Nate: And what exactly would that be?

Adam: Well, you have two things going for you. One, you’re not a newman, and two, you’re not intimately intertwined with one. So, you’re in good shape.

Victoria: The operation budgets are still way too high.

Nikki: I will find a way to get them down ten percent.

Victoria: 15. Oh, my goodness. Am I in the wrong office or did we step back in time on a time machine to when victor newman was ceo?

Victor: I may be away from the office, but… I’m still in the ring. Always a contender.

Victor: And now it begins. The competition, I mean.

Nikki: Yes, of course.

Victoria: You know, if you’re still planning on putting adam in charge, that’s– that’s a relief. Because he’s certainly doomed to fail. Thankfully, it’s not gonna be on my watch. So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a win-win situation.

Kyle: I’m sorry, I– I know I keep asking. It’s only because this isn’t who we are. I don’t even recognize us anymore, and I miss us.

Kyle: No, but– but I understand why you would. You need time and space and I wanna give that to you. You know I would do anything for you.

Jack: Wait, first phyllis, and now jeremy stark died? How is that possible? Wait– wait a minute. How– how did he die? Was he poisoned?

Chance: I don’t have all the details right now. His body was found in a different jurisdiction.

Jack: So he was on the run. Was it an accident?

Chance: I don’t know. All I know is a fisherman found him washed up on the shore of pheasant lake, that’s it.

Jack: Well, this is some blow to the da’s case against diane. I guess there was somebody out here who wanted stark dead and didn’t mind taking phyllis with him.

Chance: Okay, don’t get ahead of yourself.

Jack: Oh, now you wanna slow things down? You didn’t waste a second arresting my fiancé. Now, you wanna take some time and look at the facts?

Chance: Nothing has changed. We go where the evidence leads us.

Nate: From what I’ve seen, she doesn’t have a thing to worry about. Nick would do all he can to shield her and his baby from too much family scrutiny.

Adam: His baby? Oh. You didn’t know.

Victor: My darling, you will change your mind once you realize that mccall will give a number of newman divisions a run for their money.

Victoria: Okay, well, who doesn’t enjoy a little healthy competition? Bring it on.

Victor: Mark my word, you’ll be kicking yourself for not buying mccall when you had a chance to do so.

Victoria: You’re putting adam in charge, correct? So, if history truly has a way of repeating itself, I’m pretty sure you’re gonna be the one with all of the regrets, daddy.

Victor: Don’t be so cocky. Adam has changed. As the new head of this big conglomerate, and a baby on the way, he’d have a far greater sense of power. He’d be someone to be reckoned with. I promise you. I love you both. Don’t work too hard.

Victoria: He’s gone overboard. He has. Has he forgotten what adam is capable of? He has no idea how hideously this venture is going to fail.

Nikki: You’re disappointed that you lost mccall, aren’t you?

Victoria: No– [ Scoffing ] I walked away.

Nikki: Because you’re afraid that when your competitor is your father, you’ll never win.

Chance: The timing of stark’s death is definitely concerning.

Jack: Oh, I’ll say.

Chance: It doesn’t erase all the evidence that points directly to diane, though.

Chance: [ Sighing ] Gee. Hey. I’m, uh, I’m sorry. I feel like I’m runnin’ off all your customers.

Sharon: Well, if it’s any consolation, I know exactly how you feel.

[ Chance chuckling ] That’s why people get so worked up.

Chance: Yeah, yeah, I guess you’re right. I guess you’re right. But you know what, coffee’s not gonna do it for me right now.

Chance: No, I just mean I– I need somethin’ a little bit more substantial. You know, you did agree to let me take you to dinner sometime. And I know it’s, uh, a bit early, but I think now is the perfect time.

What we cannot do is get bogged down on how people feel about us. We deal in facts. And the first thing we do is focus on the problem that’s right here in front of us: Building a strong defense.

Diane: So, tell me all the evidence they have against me.

Michael: All right, well, we’ll discuss that later. First, you walk me through exactly what happened the night phyllis died. The bad, the ugly, the potentially embarrassing, all of it. Because if you withhold anything from me, even the slightest detail, you can find yourself another lawyer.

Kyle: You’re not gonna tell me where you’re going?

Michael: There’s a gap in your timeline.

[ Diane scoffing ]

Diane: I have to account for every second the night of the gala?

Michael: You were alone for a period of time between wishing that you could strangle phyllis to death and her collapse in the lounge.

Diane: So, christine wants to prove that I wasn’t putting myself back together after phyllis attacked me. What does she think? That I ran out and grabbed some poison and somehow slipped it into phyllis’s champagne?

Michael: Actually, no. The poison wasn’t in phyllis’s drink, it was found inside of her mask.

Diane: Her mask? I didn’t even know that was possible.

Michael: I mean, why would you? You’re not a murderer. Were you alone at any time in phyllis’s hotel room?

Diane: Yes, then. After everyone left.

Michael: Ah, see, there. There’s your opportunity.

Diane: To what?

[ Michael sighing ]

Michael: The empty vial of poison was found in that suite.

Diane: Michael, that doesn’t make any sense. How could I run out and get some poison in the amount of time that it took me to brush my hair and put on some lipstick? W– what’s that?

Michael: It is an online receipt. According to this, you purchased the toxin online a few days before the gala.

Diane: What? Absolutely not.

Michael: You know, using your credit card.

Diane: Michael, I didn’t do that.

Michael: A crime of passion is one thing, but christine’s gonna try to say that this was premeditated. That you had a plan.

Diane: The only thing on my mind before the gala was jack announcing our engagement. I didn’t buy any poison! Online or otherwise. Michael, look at me. I am telling you the truth. I had nothing to do with phyllis’s death. Find jeremy stark. He’s the one behind all of this.

Michael: All right, all right, I’ll find everybody. But it won’t be pretty, and it won’t be easy.

Diane: Well, do whatever’s necessary.

Michael: Christine’s gonna have your family testify against you.

Diane: I know.

Michael: I saw you and phyllis fighting. They heard you threaten phyllis’s life.

Diane: Jack and kyle will understand. They’ll downplay it and explain the extenuating circumstances. They’ll do everything they can to help.

Michael: And what about summer?

Diane: Summer will do everything she can to see that I spend the rest of my life behind bars.

Kyle: Give me two minutes. Can you do that? Just talk to me. What’s going to bring us closure?

Summer: Answers. That’s what I need. That’s the only thing that’s gonna bring me any peace or quiet–

Kyle: I want that too. I want morning espressos at our place in milan and harrison correcting our italian. We were so happy.

Summer: Are you saying that we should just run off to italy to escape our problems? I–

Nikki: Darling, whether you admit it or not, I know you’re still smarting for losing mccall to your father.

Victoria: Yes, it would’ve been nice to add mccall, but having adam tethered to it made the idea untenable.

Nikki: I totally agree with you. You made the right decision.

Victoria: Unfortunately, now I have to live with adam lording it over me until his predictable demise.

Nikki: Hm. Well, this acquisition is gonna be big news. Lots of fanfare. Press releases.

Victoria: Yeah, I know. I’m sure dad’s gonna wanna make a big splash to help adam.

Nikki: Might be a good time to get away.

Victoria: What do you mean? Like, as in a vacation?

Nikki: Well sure, why not? You know, take a few days for yourself. Just relax a little bit.

Victoria: Well, I do have that trip to los angeles coming up.

Nikki: No. That is for business.

Victoria: I know that, mom, but I could add a few days for vacation. I mean, you and I both know that I would probably turn it into back-to-back meetings, but for me that’s fun. And I promise you, I would get a massage and I would see the ocean. I mean, it would probably be from a window, but I would see it.

Michael: The only thing that will bring summer some semblance of peace is clearing your name, and hopefully in the process, discovering the person responsible for her death.

Diane: Which seems close to impossible now that I see this evidence.

Michael: Including, but not limited to, trying to explain the fact that an unconscious phyllis was holding your engagement ring.

Diane: Oh, no, no, that was in jack’s pocket. And then jeremy bumped into him on the dance floor and he must’ve taken it.

Michael: You have no proof of that.

Diane: Well, no, because it was all happening so fast, and there were a lot of people.

Jack: Yeah, stark’s death definitely adds a whole new layer of mystery to all of this.

I know you probably think I’m being overly dramatic, I’m really serious this time. Please listen to me, that woman just attacked me and threatened to kill me. God help me, michael.

[ Phyllis panting ] I can’t believe I’m saying this. I’m actually afraid of that crazy bitch.

Diane: She sounds terrified.

Michael: Because of you?

Diane: No. The phyllis that trapped me in her hotel suite was anything but scared. She was accusatory. She was goading me into fighting back.

Michael: Hm, that sounds on brand for her–

Diane: Yeah, you saw phyllis the night of the gala. How did she seem to you?

Michael: Fiery, on the attack. You saw her.

Diane: Right, right, so why would she leave that message if she was really scared for her life? Why’d– she would leave you a voicemail? Does that make any sense?

Michael: She wasn’t thinking clearly.

[ Diane sighing ]

Diane: [ Chuckling ] Okay. What else don’t I know about?

[ Diane scoffing ]

Michael: When the police searched jack’s home, they found a letter from phyllis among your things.

Diane: What letter? She never sent me a letter. What?

[ Scoffing ] Michael, I have never seen this before in my life. W– where was this found?

Michael: In your bedroom.

Diane: Someone planted it there.

Michael: Mm. So, someone made their way into your very secure home and left that letter there?

Diane: No, I’m not saying that jeremy could have gotten access to jack’s house. But someone else could have.

Michael: Who? Who?

[ Diane sniggering ] Oh, you’re kidding me. You’re accusing phyllis of being an accomplice to her own murder? Moderate to severe eczema

Chance: This was a lot better than I expected.

Sharon: You know, the food here is the same as in the dining room, it’s just smaller portions and tinier plates.

Chance: Well, the food was great, but the company was just outstanding. Thank you, sharon. This has been a, uh, a perfect distraction for me right now. Sorry. Ah, hell. Hey, uh, I gotta run and take care of this. I’m so sorry. Thank you. This has been a very amusing afternoon.

Chance: Let’s do it again sometime. You know, maybe make it a proper dinner with, uh, with big plates and everything.

Daniel: I think that you need to open up.

Summer: Says who?

Daniel: Well, mom would. Just, whatever you’re feeling, just get it out there. You know, it could be dark or crazy or funny–

Summer: You know what, I actually think the world would be a better place if more people kept their emotions inside. Stuffed them down so that they didn’t cause problems.

Daniel: Well, that’s the exact opposite of what we should be doing.

Summer: Everybody grieves in different ways, daniel.

Daniel: I know, but you are mourning our mother like– like an angry, reclusive pain in the–

Summer: Hey! I just found out some pretty shocking news, okay?

Daniel: Okay. What?

Summer: Our new stepdad.

Summer: He’s dead.

Summer: I don’t know. Nobody is telling me anything. They’re treating me like a toddler. But hey, you know what? They’ll probably talk to you. Why don’t you– why don’t you go find chance. He’ll tell you what’s happening.

Daniel: Maybe. Yeah, um, why don’t you come with me to the station?

Summer: So you can keep an eye on me? Daniel, please. I don’t need constant supervision.

Summer: Good.

Diane: Let’s just look at this from a different angle. What if jeremy had an accomplice? Someone who kept his secrets and did his bidding.

Michael: Just like you did when you were laundering money for him in L.A.?

[ Diane sighing ] It’s all gonna come out in trial. You better get used to people pokin’ into your past and using your sins for their own private entertainment. But I digress, go ahead.

Diane: Phyllis and jeremy conspired together before to get me to leave town. What if he was just using her to gain access to jack’s house? I mean, phyllis walked in and out of there as she pleased. She visited summer and harrison.

Michael: All right, talk me through it. Convince me.

Diane: Michael, I found her in our home, alone, right before the gala. She could’ve planted the letter then, and gained access to my credit cards.

Michael: Go on.

Diane: Look, phyllis could’ve been part of jeremy’s plan. And if this letter is in her handwriting, which I’m assuming it is, then doesn’t that prove that she was in on it?

Michael: Hm. Why would she involve herself in a setup that requires her own death?

Diane: Well, I– I– I don’t know. I don’t know, but she was just so set on revenge that she would do anything to make me suffer?

Michael: Look, I can’t see her framing you for murder.

Diane: Michael, if you’re not willing to look at phyllis as the bad guy, then I have already lost this case.

Michael: Look, I know you’re searching for answers, but you won’t win any points in court, or with your attorney, who’s still grieving the loss.

Diane: What if phyllis’s death was an accident? What if they were just setting me up for an attempted murder, and then I– I– I don’t know, the ambulance exploded before jeremy could give her the antidote. Or what if jeremy turned on phyllis at the last minute and gave her a lethal dose of poison?

Michael: It’s farfetched.

Diane: Maybe. But what if phyllis’s murder was a revenge plot gone horribly wrong? For bathroom odors that linger.

Victor: Of course, you’ll run mccall. It’s yours to run. If you think you can make something out of it.

[ Adam chuckling ]

Adam: Look, if I agree to do this, I want some guarantees.

Victor: What are they?

Adam: Total autonomy. From newman. And from you.

Victoria: All right, so what’s the problem? I’m about to purchase some companies that might change the scope of your division. I’d think you’d be interested in that.

Nate: I am very interested in the business, yes.

Victoria: Good. Then you’ll join me.

Nate: L.A. It is.

Kyle: What does stark’s death mean for mom? Is she any closer to getting released? It’s not like she could’ve had anything to do with whatever happened to stark.

Jack: That’s what I tried to tell chance. They still don’t have all the facts.

Kyle: Does mom know? Does michael know?

Diane: I need to see jeremy. Can you figure out some way to get him in here?

Michael: To what purpose?

Diane: So I can get him to tell me the truth about what happened.

Michael: He’s on the run.

Diane: What?

Michael: The last time he was seen was shortly after the memorial. I mean, maybe when his little grift fell apart, he was afraid he’d go back to jail.

Diane: So he’s just disappeared? No. No, no, no, no, we need more time.

Michael: Listen. I’ll do what I can on my end, but keep thinking of details. Anything that will help us clear you.

Diane: All right, find him. Find jeremy stark, because he is the key to everything.

Michael: All right, all right, I’ll be in touch. Hey! Kyle, I’m glad you called, I was just talking to–

Kyle: There’s something I need to tell you.

Michael: Oh, why does this not sound good?

Kyle: Stark is dead.
