Allie: Hi. You wanted to see me?

Jack: Yes. I have some good news. Everything is finalized for you to start your internship at jabot. You can start tomorrow.

Allie: Oh, I am so excited, jack, and so grateful for you for making this happen.

Jack: Well, my actions aren’t completely benevolent. I have my own motives for wanting to help you.

Allie: Oh?

Jack: Well, yeah, the happier, the more settled you are, the more likely you are to stay in genoa city longer, maybe even make this home. And I would like that very much.

Kyle: Mwah!

Summer: Thank you for coming early. I wanted to talk to you before your parents got here.

Kyle: What’s wrong?

Summer: I saw my mom earlier, and I finally got her to admit what happened between her and jack.

Kyle: Yeah. I talked to my dad. He told me the whole story.

Summer: [ Sighs ] I managed to keep it together in front of my mom, but I am so upset that my mom used her relationship with jack to make a statement. She just could not resist rubbing diane’s nose in it. She didn’t stop to think for one second how that might affect jack.

[ Scoffs ] It’s just — it’s so disappointing.

Kyle: Yeah. Phyllis has a special talent for shooting herself in the foot and inadvertently taking other people down with her.

Summer: I mean, you’re not wrong, but I know that my mom really cares about jack. And I think that he feels the same way about her? She regrets so much about what happened, and I know that she would do anything to make it up to him. I’m just hoping that jack can find it in his heart to forgive her.

Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Summer: What, you don’t think my mom deserves another chance?

Diane: Oh! It seems we can’t stop running into each other today. What are the odds?

Phyllis: Well, they’re pretty high since you came to my hotel to use the spa. Did you have a good time?

Diane: Oh, yes, I did. And now that I know I’m welcome, I’ll be sure and stop by on a more regular basis.

Phyllis: Well, we’re happy to have you. No need to thank me.

Diane: Thank you for what?

Phyllis: Well, for having an area that provides a friendly face. I mean, I’m sure you’re still getting a very chilly reception from the people in genoa city.

Diane: Hmm.

Phyllis: People here hold a grudge.

Diane: Well, that’s okay because I have unlimited patience.

Phyllis: Do you?

Diane: Yes. Even if the rest of this town never comes around, I will be just fine — because I’m connecting with my son and my grandson and the abbotts, especially jack, who is starting to accept that I will be part of the family.

Chloe: Thanks so much. Oh. Hello?

Sally: Chloe. I’m so glad I reached you. I just wanted to apologize for having to run off before we could finish our conversation

Chloe: Not a problem. It’s the life of a ceo.

Sally: You’re telling me. I had a conference call and a few meetings that tied me up until now. But I would love to talk more.

Chloe: So would I. I have some free time now, if that works for you.

Sally: It does. But I don’t think we should do it over the phone. Can you swing by the office?

Chloe: I’ll be right over.

Sally: Excellent. And I promise it will be worth your while.

Adam: So, what exactly did you accomplish with ashland?

Victoria: I righted every wrong.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] That’s a grand statement. Would you care to elaborate on that?

Nikki: I would like to hear all about that, too, but what matters most to me is that you’re safe and back where you belong.

Victor: Well, I couldn’t agree more…if that is true.

Victoria: It is. I cut ashland out of my life, and I made him pay dearly for what he did. And now I’m home for good.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] So happy to have you back, my sweetheart.

Nikki: We all are, darling. Kids can change minds…

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Well, after the hell that ashland put me through, I decided that I had to end the nightmare on my own terms and in my own way. And in order to pull that off, i had to make sure that ashland believed with complete certainty that I was willing to turn my back on the family and newman enterprises.

Victor: Why, sweetheart, i wish you had let us in on your plans. It would have saved all of us a hell of a lot of heartache.

Victoria: Daddy, I couldn’t risk ashland finding out. That’s why I couldn’t let any of you in on my plans. And I’m sorry that I had to put you through that. But I had to make a clean break.

Nikki: So, does that mean that you never believed ashland’s claims that your love changed him? Was that an act?

Victoria: I do believe that ashland loved me, as much as a man like him is capable of love. And I believe that he was sorry for what he did to me. But it wasn’t enough to see past his massive betrayal and deception.

Nick: Well, thank god.

Victoria: Look, whether or not ashland loved me, it doesn’t matter. He is who he is. He’s a man who built his entire empire on lies. And ashland is never gonna change. He doesn’t deserve forgiveness, and he certainly doesn’t deserve the generous payoff that dad gave him in hopes that he would disappear, which he didn’t do until I agreed to go with him. Honestly, I wish that you would have let me handle this on my own. But the point is, I’ve rectified everything. It’s done. And right now I just want to say thank you to all of you because I don’t think my plan would have been successful without those of you who truly love me.

Allie: Jack, you’ve made me feel at home the moment i arrived.

Jack: Well, that’s been easy because I’ve loved having you here.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Allie: [ Laughs ]

Jack: And clearly she’s amused by something.

Allie: Oh, it’s, uh — it’s noah.

Jack: Noah? Again? Boy, you two are getting pretty close.

Allie: [ Chuckles ] No, we’re not getting “close,” close. No, no. Oh, you know, what am I saying? I should just stop talking.

[ Laughs ]

Jack: I get it. I understand.

Allie: No, it just doesn’t feel like a conversation i should be having with my grandfather.

Jack: You know what? I’m just a regular guy. You can talk to me about anything.

Allie: Okay, well, noah and I — we — we’re hanging out. But that’s all. From tomorrow on, I am gonna be focusing strictly on work.

Jack: Well, I certainly hope not. I hope you’re gonna have some fun, too. Look, I’m sure you’re gonna be a great intern, hardworking and all that, but I don’t want you locked away in a lab. The sun is out. It’s summer. You should be having fun. God knows I did when I was your age.

Allie: Okay, again, this feels like a conversation you shouldn’t be having with your granddaughter.

Jack: Okay, okay. I’ll respect your boundaries. All I’m saying is, if having fun means spending time with noah or with your friends, I am all for it. For what it’s worth, I think noah’s a good guy. And I know what you’ve been through, and it makes me happy to see you smile.

Kyle: I would never say phyllis doesn’t deserve a second chance. I mean, how could I when I’m giving my mother one? And I get that she has sincere regrets and wishes she could do it all over again and — I know my dad still has feelings for her.

Summer: Then why don’t you think they should give it another try?

Kyle: She hurt him…bad. And their history — it can’t be ignored. It took a lot for him to put himself out there again, to believe that things would be different this time. After talking to him and seeing how wounded he is, I just don’t see how there’s a way for them to get back together.

Summer: [ Sighs ] I hear you. I feel terrible for my mom. But I get it. I just wonder how this is gonna affect everyone going forward, especially with diane working with us at marchetti. I know that our mother has made a truce, but —

Kyle: Yeah, it definitely seems more tenuous now that we know what’s going on.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Kyle: I don’t think the conflict between phyllis and my mother is over.

Summer: I’m afraid that it’s only gonna get worse.

Diane: I’m amazed at how things have changed since I came back. And I am downright happy with the way things are going.

Phyllis: That’s — nah. I’m not gonna do that. Nope. Nope. No.

Diane: You okay?

Phyllis: I’m fine. Thanks.

Diane: Yeah, I was just saying that it’s just so great that michael and I are friends again and kyle has opened his heart. And summer — oh, she couldn’t be more supportive.

Phyllis: [ Clears throat ] My daughter is very gracious.

Diane: Yes, she’s a wonderful partner for my son.

Phyllis: Yes, your son is very lucky to have my daughter.

Diane: Oh, and jack — I mean, he and I are connecting on a deeper and more mature level than I ever, ever could have imagined.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me?! Are you serious right now? God, you are so out of touch. You delusional if you think that you and jack are ever, ever gonna have a romantic relationship. It is never, ever going to happen. If you have type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Who said anything about romance? Your mind went straight there because you expected jack to forgive and forget and take you back like he’s done too many times before. And now you’re terrified because he finally wants nothing to do with you, and you have no one to blame but yourself. It must be making you insane.

Phyllis: I’m not gonna let you bait me, diane. I’m not gonna do that.

Diane: That’s not what I’m doing. I’m simply telling the truth.

Phyllis: I don’t believe anything that comes out of your mouth.

Diane: Well, it’s not just me. Everyone in your life can see what’s going on. Even your own daughter can see who you really are.

Jack: Well, I won’t keep you any longer.

Allie: Oh, I actually don’t have any plans.

Jack: I’m guessing that’ll change by the time you get back to noah. Anyway, I got a meeting I have to get to. Remember — you have to start work tomorrow. You’re a working woman now. Enjoy tonight. And that’s my grandfatherly advice.

Allie: [ Laughs ]

[ Knock on door ]

Sally: Come in!

Chloe: Wow. Seeing you behind that desk looks right. This job suits you.

Sally: Well, thank you. I think so, too, if I do say so myself. So…how are you doing? You seemed pretty upset before, and rightfully so.

Chloe: Well, I feel like i was, uh, on the verge of a mental breakdown, so that’s an understatement, but I — I was very appreciative of you offering a sympathetic ear.

Sally: Yeah, well, you’ve seemed like you’ve needed one lately.

Chloe: You know, it’s just been… every time chelsea and I get together, things just keep getting worse. We are constantly bickering and fighting and making each other tense. And normally, you know, we’re finishing each other’s sentences, and lately I just feel like we’re both speaking two different languages.

Sally: Well, what do you think has changed?

Chloe: It’s — I don’t know. It’s a mix of things. I love chelsea with all of my heart, and we’ve always been there for each other. I mean, we have been through so much together, you have no idea.

Sally: You’ve made that crystal clear. And I know a true best friend is hard to come by. And I just want you to know I’m not gonna dissect your friendship or pry into what’s going on with chelsea personally. I — I just want to talk about you…and your thoughts on your future. I just want to know if you actually want out of your professional partnership with chelsea or if that was just something that was said in the heat of the moment.

Chloe: Well, actually, I’ve been giving it a lot of thought, you know, what is best for both me and chelsea. And I was curious what you meant when you said about a possible alternative. Have you heard about an open position with another fashion label?

Sally: [ Breathes deeply ] I have something better in mind. I would love for you to come back and work here with me.

Victoria: I mentioned to nicholas that ashland and I were meeting with potential investors for a business venture, hoping that he would deliver that news to dad.

Nick: Which I did.

Victoria: And I’m grateful for that.

Nick: And I’m relieved because I really thought dad should hear what you had to tell me, but I really didn’t want to let you down.

Victoria: Well, I was counting on you to do the right thing, and you came through for me. Dad, once you knew, I was guessing that you would try to track down those investors and squash any possible deals.

Nikki: And here I was worried that you would be furious with him. You certainly know your father.

Victoria: Well, we do think the same. And I knew that he would want to stop me from making what he would consider a very foolish decision.

Victor: You’re exactly right.

Victoria: Once you conveniently killed any possibility of any outside funding, I came up with the idea to convince ashland that we should invest our own money. So then I opened a corporate bank account that we both had direct access to, and i deposited $250 million of my own money into that account. I know it was risky, but then ashland took the bait. And he deposited $250 million of his money, the money that dad gave him. Then, behind his back, i transferred that sum into my private account and I closed the corporate one. I can return your portion whenever you’d like.

Victor: And he never saw it coming?

Victoria: Not for one minute.

Victor: I like that. I like that a lot.

Nick: Well, I can’t imagine ashland took it very well knowing he was being played all along. Or does he even know yet?

Victoria: Oh, he knows. After I drained the account and I packed my bags, I dropped all pretense and I let him know in blistering detail what I had done and how I truly felt.

Nikki: Oh, darling, what that must have been like for you.

Victoria: It was both painful and cathartic.

Adam: Mm.

Victoria: I was hurt by what happened, and I still am, but… in that moment, getting revenge — it was — it was exhilarating. It was a moment of triumph.

Nick: And how was it for ashland?

Victoria: It was a crushing and devastating final blow. I have never seen him look so defeated.

Victor: Sweetheart, no one deserves it more than that bastard. The fact that you turned what obviously was a devious plan on his part back on him — I admire you for that. You’re my daughter, alright. You not only did that for yourself, but you did that for all of us. I love that.

Chloe: I don’t know what i expected when you mentioned another possible career move, but I never expected you to make me a job offer, especially since there’s no longer a fashion platform here. Unless you plan to bring it back?

Sally: There are no plans to do that. This is just about me wanting to create my own team at newman media, and you check all the boxes, especially the s’S.

Chloe: The s’s?

Sally: Smart, scrappy, and savvy. You’re the kind of person that i want to work with, someone who shares my vision. And when we worked together before, we really connected.

Chloe: I-I totally agree. But this is a completely different scenario. What exactly would I be doing?

Sally: You would be helping me run the company as my right-hand woman and… chief operating officer.

Chloe: Are you serious?

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Chloe: You’re serious?

Sally: Deadly. I am ready to order your nameplate for your office door — “chloe mitchell, coo of newman media.” Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

Chloe: [ Laughs ]

Phyllis: Keep my daughter out of this.

Diane: I’m just being honest. I know for a fact that summer feels that jack deserves better than you have to offer. I overheard her saying as much in the hotel.

Phyllis: You overheard her? What are you doing, spying on me?

Diane: No, not at all. I came back to the lobby, and i caught part of your conversation.

Phyllis: Wow, that’s a coincidence.

Diane: You know, phyllis, i hope for your sake and sanity that you eventually come to accept reality. Jack is never going to love you again. He’s never going to trust you again. He’s never going to think of you as anything but conniving and duplicitous.

Phyllis: That’s actually you, not me.

Diane: Oh, except…I’m the one who’s winning, and you, once again, are out in the cold.

Phyllis: I will never lose… ever!

Phyllis: Oh, good. Good. I hope you saw that. I hope you saw every single thing, that she was the aggressor. Jack — jack, I was holding it back. I was keeping myself together, until just now.

Jack: I did see that she seemed to be pushing your buttons. I wish she hadn’t done that, but —

Phyllis: But she crossed the line.

Jack: I came upon the two of you mid-conversation. I have no idea what you might have done to provoke her.

Phyllis: Oh, my god. Oh, uh, are you kidding? What i did to provoke her?!

Jack: It wouldn’t have been the first time.

Phyllis: Wait a second. Miss “I came back from the dead” gets a free pass?! But I don’t get the benefit of the doubt?! Seriously!? I don’t understand you. What was going on between us was amazing. It could have been so great.

Jack: I think you know why it can’T.

Phyllis: I do! I have taken responsibility for every single thing. That bitch has taken responsibility for nothing that she’s ever done to me! And everything went to hell when she came back into town, with her intrusion and toxicity. But that doesn’t matter to you. You can’t even see it! Open your eyes! Open your eyes. It is everywhere. Let me tell you something. Let me tell you something. One day you’re gonna realize that you made a mistake. You will realize that. And you’ll want me back. And you’ll realize that you missed out on something really great, jack. But it will be too late.

Diane: I hope I didn’t keep you too long.

Kyle: Well, we got here a little early. We had a lot of ground to cover.

Summer: As much as I love society’s atmosphere — and their empanadas — I’m looking forward to having a proper office space.

Diane: Have you decided on a location for the new marchetti offices?

Kyle: Mm, we’re gonna work out of the jabot building once the reorganization of the space is finished. Shouldn’t take too long.

Diane: Well, that will be convenient, being under the same roof as jack — and — and — and jabot headquarters.

Kyle: Yeah, we think it was the right call.

Diane: Yeah. This is all so exciting. And I can’t wait to start work. I am humbled by the opportunity. I feel like things are finally, finally starting to settle down for me in genoa city.

Adam: Look, with all due respect, we need to address how things are gonna work at the company.

Victor: Son, I understand your concern, but right now, let us celebrate what your sister has done. It’s just extraordinary. Okay?

Nick: I think celebrating is premature. Uh, as much as I’d like to think that ashland locke is gonna slither away quietly, that’s not who he is. He’s gonna be looking for a fight. I guarantee you this is not the last we’ve heard of ashland locke. I mean, what’s gonna stop him from coming after the money he lost or his part of the company after he was betrayed?

Victoria: Because I told him in no uncertain terms that i would expose his cancer fraud if he did. His reputation, if this news gets out, in the business world will drop down to zero. He won’t be able to get a job fetching coffee, let alone start his own company. His name will be utterly ruined.

Nick: I know we think we’ve got him backed into a corner right now, and I really admire what you did, vick, but he’s got nothing to lose. He doesn’t have you. He doesn’t have dad’s money. He doesn’t have his company. What’s stopping him from going on the attack just out of pure revenge? For people who are a little intense about hydration.

Chloe: You really caught me by surprise. I have a lot of questions.

Sally: Shoot.

Chloe: For starters, what does adam think about me becoming coo?

Sally: Well, I have already ran it past him, and he supports it.

Chloe: Okay, I think I’m gonna need a definition for the word “support.”

Sally: As in champion, aid, help. And I’m sure the second thing you’re asking yourself is, “why would he do that?” Well, first of all, adam trusts my judgment. And second, as the ceo of newman enterprises, he wants the company to succeed. So, if I think hiring you is what’s best for newman media, then he’s gonna go along with it. And you’re gonna be reporting to me, not adam. So, whatever personal issues are going on between you two will not be an issue.

Chloe: Sorry. It’s just — it’s a lot to process, and I am extremely flattered by the offer. It’s just a bit overwhelming.

Sally: Look, I had my own internal debate about taking on a bigger role here. But in the end, I went with my gut, which is exactly what I am doing now with you.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Sally: I have a lot to prove. And you probably do, too, which can be daunting. But I absolutely believe that we can accomplish great things together. I know that we would make a fantastic team and that you are the right person for this job.

Chloe: I just don’t know how you could be so confident when I’m not.

Sally: Because I’ve witnessed it. I mean, look how far we took newman fashion. It was on the cusp of serious greatness before victoria pulled the plug. And there are definite parallels between selling fashion and selling content. They are both creative endeavors aimed at enticing the public to want their product. You’re brilliant at marketing, branding, and social media. You are always on top of the current trends, and you’re not afraid to color outside the lines whenever the occasion calls for it.

Chloe: Okay, well, I don’t disagree with you there.

[ Chuckles ] I’m — I’m just used to working for a smaller business with just a handful of employees, and this would entail supervising a ton of people and overseeing a huge budget.

Sally: All of which you can handle. I think you’re capable of more than you realize. But you’re never gonna be able to make that happen if you don’t challenge yourself.

Chloe: I am — I am humbled by how much faith you have in me, especially after the way things fell apart when newman fashion shut down and chelsea and I moved on without you.

Sally: All of that is water under the bridge as far as I’m concerned. I know that you were caught in the middle of an awkward situation, and I understand why you made the choice that you did. As you can see, I am right where I’m supposed to be. Newman media is where I belong. And it’s where you belong, too. You can shine bright here. All you have to do is say yes.

Victor: I got to be honest with all of you. I love that challenge. I love the idea of ashland locke coming after us. Let that bastard give us his best shot. Bring it on. You know why? We have never been as united as a family as we are now.

Victoria: I agree. Ashland has no viable options. Like I said, it would betupibebebebebebebebebebebebebebebebebebe for him to come after us.

Nikki: I still think we need to keep our eyes open and hope that he is smart enough to realize this is not a battle he should take on. In any event, I don’t want tooooooooooooooooe any more time worrying about what he may or may not do. And I agree with your father that, together, we are unstoppable.

Adam: Well, as much as i would love to stay here and celebrate the family reunification and ashland’s downfall, I have more important things to deal with.

[ Door slams ]

Victor: I will, uh, deal with him later, okay?

Nikki: There’s something else I want to know. Nicholas mentioned that earlier when you spoke, you said that there would be changes. What did you mean by that?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Allie: Hello. Can I order a coffee, black, please?

Phyllis: Allie.

Allie: Phyllis. Hey.

Phyllis: Hey.

Allie: How’s it going?

Phyllis: It’s going great.

Allie: That’s awesome.

Phyllis: Yeah. Would you like to join me?

Allie: Oh, you know, I would, but I’m supposed to be meeting noah here somewhere.

Phyllis: Oh, okay. Well, you beat him here.

Allie: [ Chuckles ] Guess i did.

Phyllis: Yeah. You want to kill some time with me?

Jack: Sorry I’m late.

Summer: We’ll catch you up on everything you missed.

Jack: Yeah. Go ahead.

Diane: We were wondering what was keeping you.

Kyle: Dad? Is everything okay? Hey, it’s me…your skin.

Allie: You know, it’s funny, phyllis. I haven’t seen you in quite a bit. I figured you and I would have ran into each other at the abbott house before now.

Phyllis: Right, right. Well, um, I was out of town, and since I’ve been home, it’s just been crazy busy.

Allie: Oh, really?

Phyllis: Anyway, how are you doing? I bet it’s a whirlwind for you ever since you arrived from L.A., Right?

Allie: [ Laughs ] Yeah, it’s definitely been a lot of change.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Allie: Yeah. My whole life is basically going in an entirely different direction than I ever thought it would.

Phyllis: Wow. Wow. Well, genoa city — it seems to agree with you.

Allie: Yeah. Yeah, more than I expected.

Phyllis: You deserve happiness. You’ve been through so much, you know, your dad’s passing and…you know, changing citi– anyway, tell me what it’s like living here and living at the abbott house.

Allie: [ Laughs ]

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. What is that like? How are you getting along with everyone? Jack and everyone? Just tell me everything.

Jack: I’m fine. I just got caught up talking to allie. Uh, I’ve got a million things on my mind right now. I apologize. I’m — why don’t we get down to business?

Kyle: Okay. First thing — we have set up a press conference for jabot to announce the purchase of marchetti and that I will be taking over the role as ceo of the fashion house.

Jack: Good, good. It has to be splashy.

Diane: Oh, I have some ideas about that from a P.R. Perspective. I was thinking maybe we leak the news to some high-end, sophisticated fashion sites first. Let the rumor mill create some guessing about whether or not the deal is going to happen. Then, when we do have the press conference, the buzz will be at a fever pitch.

Summer: I think it’s a great idea. The fashion industry loves to gossip.

Kyle: I like it.

Jack: Yeah. Yeah. It’s good.

Kyle: This job already seems like it’s a good fit for you, mother.

Diane: Well, I am willing to do whatever it takes, work day and night to do a good job and make you proud. There is no place that I’d rather be.

Chloe: Please know that I am so grateful for this opportunity.

Sally: So, does this mean that you are accepting the offer?

Adam: Sally?

[ Sighs ] Hey, chloe.

Chloe: Hi, adam.

Adam: I’m interrupting.

Chloe: No. No, no, no. I was — I was just leaving.

Sally: We were just discussing the coo position.

Adam: Ah.

Chloe: And I’m gonna take some time and get back to you, if that’s okay. I don’t meant to be wish-washy. I think it’s an incredibly interesting offer. I just want to make sure that I’m ready to make a move, and i need to see if I can still fix things on my end.

Sally: Yeah, I completely understand, but I hope to hear from you soon.

Chloe: You will. I promise.

Sally: Okay. Spill. What the hell happened?

Adam: Oh, my family never ceases to amaze me. They fall all over each other talking about love and loyalty and being a united front. They give each other proud looks and compliments like I’m not even in the room.

Sally: Okay. Well, you’ve set the tone, so now give me the specifics.

Adam: Victoria’s back, and they pulled the rug out from under me…again. But if they think that I’m going to sit down and take it — mnh-mnh — they are in for a rude awakening.

Victoria: You know, I know that you all know how important it has been for me to find balance between who I am on my own and who I am as a newman. Look, I know that I’ve pushed you away from time to time because sometimes I felt like i had to fight to maintain my sense of self, especially by running the family company. But after everything that’s happened with ashland, I… I realize that I didn’t have to fight for those things that I — I already had. I know that you want my happiness and my success as much as I want it for myself. And I’m whole and complete because of my family. Your advice and your guidance have kept me strong, and they have helped me to forge my identity. And, nicholas, going through this whole ordeal with you, i realized something. I realized that, no matter what, you have my back. You’re the best brother and the best friend that I could ever ask for. I’m just — I’m so thankful for all of your help and your support through this incredibly difficult period. Nikki: Well, I wrapped it up quickly so I could be here in time for victoria’s return. Do you know if she and victor are on their way back from the airport yet?

Adam: Um… I’m sorry. But this is the first I’ve heard about victoria’s big homecoming taking place right here. Guess that’s very telling, isn’t it?

Nikki: I don’t know what you mean by that.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Well, both the location and the fact that I was not informed says a lot.

Nikki: Nobody is intentionally keeping anything from you, if that’s what you’re implying.

Adam: Alright, well, then tell me what you know.

Nikki: My daughter is returning home. That’s all I’ve heard. What do you expect?

Adam: I just thought you might have an idea of what my future might be… since, apparently, victoria is coming home to roost.

Billy: Hey, vick, it’s me. Listen, [Sighs] I’m just calling to make sure that you’re alright. I ran into your family, and it’s pretty clear that they are keeping a secret about you. So can you just let me know that — that you’re okay? Please, call, text, do whatever. Just checking in. Thanks.

[ Sighs ]

[ Knock on door ]

Nick: Vick, I was so happy to get your message. Of course, I’ll meet you anywhere, but why here? Why in a hotel? What’s going on? What’s the big mystery?

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Elena: Nate? What are you doing here? Thought I texted you everything — my flight, my hotel, my itinerary. Did I miss anything?

Nate: No. I got it all. I just… came home to say “aloha.”

Elena: Wow. You know, “aloha” means both “hello” and “goodbye.”

Nate: I think it’s also a way of expressing affection, compassion, love, all of which I’m feeling for you right now.

Elena: And I feel the same way about you. Especially right now, the way you’re looking at me.

Nate: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: But I have a flight to catch.

Nate: That’s why i double-checked the itinerary you sent me, and by my calculations, I came home just in time for a more meaningful goodbye.

[ Chuckles ]

Nate: [ Clears throat ]

Elena: [ Chuckles ]

Chance: Hello, man.

Devon: Oh.

Chance: How you doing?

Devon: It’s good to see you.

Chance: Yeah, you too. Guess we had the same idea about how to spend this beautiful summer day.

Devon: I know, it’s too nice to not be outside. How have you been, though? You seem like you’re doing a lot better with yourself these days.

Chance: Yeah. I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you race me around this park? If you beat me, I’ll tell you. A deal?

Devon: Race you.

Chance: Okay?

Devon: Okay, sure.

Chance: Come on.

Devon: [ Grunts ]

[ Indistinct conversation ]

Lily: Hey. Sorry if I kept you guys waiting.

Amanda: Hey. No, no, not at all. We actually just got here ourselves.

Lily: Oh, good. Okay. Oh, I know you’ve been seeing your mom a lot. How is she doing?

Imani: I just got back from seeing her for the first time since she had her stroke. She’s still struggling with her speech and mobility.

Amanda: Yeah, but we’re not just worried about her physical state. We’re also worried about her psychological state. You know, seeing her in that hospital bed, just stuck there.

Imani: But it definitely seems to lift her spirits when one of us comes to visit.

Lily: Yeah, I’m sure. I’m sure she loves having you both there. And look, if you ever want to take time off to go see her, please feel free, because, honestly, family comes first.

Imani: Thanks, lily.

Abby: Hello, ladies.

Amanda: Hello.

Abby: Chancellor-winters must be flying high after that successful launch party. You must be pleased with the way it all turned out.

Abby: Well, it felt good being back in the saddle. You know, hosting a big event like that, I didn’t realize how much I missed it.

Lily: Oh, I meant to ask you, whatever happened to you opening a hotel across from the grand phoenix?

Abby: Oh, it’s a long story.

Lily: Okay, well, I’m definitely up for hearing it, ’cause I’m considering a similar plan of my own. Kids can change minds…

Abby: Opening a hotel across from the grand phoenix seemed like a great idea, but there were just so many issues with it, I had to give up on the whole thing.

Lily: Oh, let me guess. Was phyllis part of the problem?

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Abby: She fought me tooth and nail from the very beginning.

Amanda: She just didn’t like the idea of a competing hotel in such close proximity.

Abby: Oh, and you know phyllis. She just had to take it to the extreme.

Amanda: Okay, I guess that can be phyllis’ style. But what were you thinking?

Lily: Uh, well, I just wanted to revisit the idea of bringing another hotel to town.

Amanda: Really? Why?

Lily: Well, ’cause, you know, devon sold the athletic club, and I thought we’d need a place to have visiting talent stay. So then I thought, you know, we could also have corporate conferences or events, even concerts to showcase our talent.

Imani: Hmm.

Lily: I don’t know, maybe i could build an even grander phoenix in genoa city.

[ Light laughter ]

Nikki: Adam, I assure you, i know nothing about what victoria is planning once she returns home. I have not been in contact with her since she left. I don’t even know if she’s coming home for good.

Adam: Well, I double-checked with the pilot for the newman jet, and victoria was definitely the only passenger on board. And there are no plans to have a return flight, pick up ashland, or fly victoria back.

Nikki: Well, I wish that were concrete proof that she is completely done with him, but I’m not gonna let myself believe that until I hear it come out of her mouth. I mean, for all I know, she’s just coming back here to chew out her father for blocking her new business venture with ashland.

Adam: Wait a minute. Dad blocked her new business venture?

[ Sighs, chuckles ] W-was there anything that dad didn’t do to pave the way for victoria’s glorious return?

Victoria: Oh, missed you, too.

[ Sighs ] I would have met you at the house, but I’m having it deep-cleaned before I move back in, to symbolically remove any remnants of ashland.

Nick: Wow. I like hearing that. But how about some answers? I mean, can you tell me what is going on? And why wouldn’t you want me to tell mom and dad? I mean, you do know they know you got on the airplane, right? I mean, dad — well, dad’s dad. He’s got his finger on the pulse of everything. He was even planning on surprising you at the airport.

Victoria: But I’m sure my flight got in early, so he’ll just have to wait to see me. But he won’t have to wait that long. I texted you because I wanted to have a minute alone with you first.

Nick: You’re upset with me because I betrayed your confidence?

Victoria: No. No, nick. What I want is to… thank you.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: How does it feel to be so completely wrong about me? To be bested and stripped of all of your ill-gotten gains?

Ashland: You do understand you’ve just committed fraud?

Victoria: Go ahead. I dare you. I dare you to try to accuse me of anything. I will let the world know exactly what you are capable of and the levels to which you will stoop. I have proof to back it up, and I can destroy your life with one phone call. And the satisfaction of crushing you the way that you tried to crush me, that’s mine, too, leaving you with nothing but what you had before you masqueraded your way into my life and tricked me into loving you.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: [ Sighs ] You know what? Actually, it’s even less

[Chuckles] Because your company has been absorbed into newman enterprises. Your name and your presence are completely wiped from the building. And you are now what you always should have been — nothing. No one.

Ashland: I loved you with all my heart and soul.

Victoria: I could have predicted that you would say that, too. Only now I know, you have neither.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Chance: Whoo-hoo-hoo hoo-hoo-hoo! Whew!

Devon: Oh! I almost got ya.

Chance: [ Gasps ] Almost?

Devon: I did. I almost got you.

Chance: Almost isn’t enough, man. A win’s a win.

Devon: Oh, man. Hey, you have home-field advantage, is the problem.

Chance: Home-field advantage? How do you figure that?

Devon: Well, you’re a chancellor, and your name is on the sign, so…

[ Chuckles ]

Chance: It’s your grandmother.

Devon: Yeah. [ Chuckles ]

Chance: You know what? Even though I did win, I’ll go ahead and tell you. Even though I did win by a lot.

Devon: You should have won by a lot. You should beat me. You’re a trained government agent. I’d be worried if you didn’T. But I do want to know, how have you been? I do.

Chance: Yeah, things are actually pretty good right now.

Devon: Yeah?

Chance: They are.

Devon: Good.

Chance: Obviously, losing rey was a big blow. Thought that was really gonna drag me down, but just channeling all that grief into doing something for the greater good, try to honor his legacy.

Devon: What did you do?

Chance: I closed about 80% of his open cases.

Devon: Get outta here. That’s fantastic, man. Congratulations on doing that.

Chance: Thank you, thank you.

Devon: Wow. I’m sure he’s looking down on you, smiling.

Chance: [ Chuckling ] Yeah. Yeah, I definitely feel the positive energy, you know?

Devon: Yeah.

Chance: Got abby and dom at home right now. Couldn’t ask for more.

Devon: I hear ya. I do. I’m very impressed with how you’ve gotten yourself through everything, ’cause it really seems like you got your head in a much better place.

Chance: Thanks, brother.

Devon: Yeah.

Chance: You know what? You’re due some credit, as well. Really. Your support had a positive impact, and even if abby and i couldn’t see it at the time, it helped.

Devon: Well, I — i appreciate you saying that. I do, but I also know that i played a bit of a part in what you were going through, just ’cause I made things a bit messier than they needed to be, when it came to dominic, and i could have handled things a lot differently, so…

Chance: You know what, man? We all just wanted what was best for dominic. All that matters now is that everything worked out. Hmm?

Devon: Thanks, dude.

Lily: Wouldn’t it be great? I think chancellor-winters could bring this ultra-modern state-of-the-art hotel to genoa city. And my half of the company always wanted to bring, like, a posh, swanky hotel to town. And this could be a place that we could accommodate our artists.

Abby: Something bigger than the grand phoenix?

Lily: Well, I mean, that would actually fit the bill, except for the phyllis factor. You know, dealing with her could be a potential headache, not to mention it would cut into our profits.

Amanda: Well, I do think that a chancellor-winters hotel is a great idea.

Imani: And an exciting one.

Amanda: Yeah.

Abby: I still regret giving up the grand phoenix to phyllis.

Lily: Well, we could save ourself a lot of headache and permits for construction if we get her to sell.

Abby: [ Gasps ] That would be great — sweet justice.

Amanda: I highly doubt that phyllis is going to sell the hotel. She has put so much work into that place.

Lily: Well, look, it’s just a thought. But, I mean, if we do end up building our own hotel, I have no problem going head-to-head with phyllis.

Nate: [ Sighs ] You just made it really hard for me to say goodbye…

Elena: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: …Even if it’s just for a few days.

Elena: You’re the one who made it more difficult, coming in here like that and knowing I had to be at the airport.

Nate: You got plenty of time to make that flight.

Elena: Oh? Well, you know, there’s still room in my bag if you change your mind and want to be my stowaway.

Nate: You don’t know how tempted I am at that offer, but

[Sighs] Really can’t leave work right now.

Elena: Bummer. Well, I understand. I hope I’m not forgetting anything.

Nate: Well, I hope there’s one thing you don’t forget while you’re at that conference, shining like a star, is how much I love you and will miss you every second you’re gone.

Elena: Mmm. I’m gonna miss you, too. But I’m gonna send you lots of updates, and I’m gonna bring you some sand from beautiful hawaii.

Nate: And I promise, the next trip you take is gonna be a full-on vacation. No work, no distractions.

Elena: Mmm.

Nate: Just fun, sun, away, and play.

Elena: I like the sound of that.

Nate: Come, let me take you to the airport.

Elena: Nope, I already called a car. It should be here soon. Plus, you need to get back to work. Besides, I like leaving you wanting more.

Nick: And you want to thank me? I’m relieved you’re not upset, but I don’t know what I did to deserve that kind of gratitude.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] You know you were the only member of the family who came to me, after I announced that I was leaving, with no judgment, no reprimands, and just love.

Nick: Well, I’m glad you realize how sincere I was. I mean, I didn’t like, at all, what you were doing. But you’re your own woman, and that was your choice to make. It was very hard for dad to accept, because it contradicted what he wanted.

Victoria: I’m well aware of that.

Nick: Well, since we’re in such a great place, how about some answers, then? I mean, why’d you come back? What happened in new york?

Ashland: Yeah, I-I understand the transfer was approved. I’m just asking you now if there’s any way to get my money back. No, I understand.

[ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ] Okay everyone,

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Devon: Hey, you.

Amanda: Hey. How was your afternoon?

Devon: Oh, it was good.

Amanda: Yeah?

Devon: Went for a little run at the park.

Amanda: Yeah?

Devon: Ran into chance. We had a pretty good conversation. Hey. Are you okay? Is everything alright with your mom?

Amanda: [ Sobs ] It’s hard.

Devon: I know.

Amanda: Seeing her in the hospital bed. She can’t talk.

[ Sobbing ]

Devon: I’m sorry.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Devon: Was having your sister with you — did that help you at all?

Amanda: Yeah. And naya loved seeing her. And having someone else there was comforting.

[ Sighs ] I don’t know. I’m kind of worried about my sister, too.

Devon: Yeah?

Amanda: Because she’s putting on this brave face, and I get it ’cause I’m doing it, too, but I don’t know — I don’t know if it’s because she’s trying to be brave in front of our mother, she doesn’t want her to see how worried she is, or she just can’t or won’t accept the sad truth. Someday her walls are gonna have to come down, and..

Devon: Well, you’re gonna be there for imani when they do. Right?

Amanda: [ Sighs ] Sorry.

[ Sobs ]

[ Sighs ] It’s just — it’s really — it’s really frustrating, you know? Because as a lawyer, if you are competent, if you’re prepared, then things usually go the way that you expect it. But in your personal life, there’s just things that you can’t control.

Devon: Well…

Amanda: And I just — i hate it.

Devon: Oh.

Amanda: [ Sobbing ]

Devon: It’s okay.

Lily: Oh, hello.

Abby: Well, this is a nice surprise. I thought you were working.

Chance: Well, I racked up so much overtime lately, thought I’d take the day off.

Abby: Well, what are you gonna do with all your unexpected free time?

Chance: I hung out with dom for a little bit, got some solid father-son time in, went for a run, saw devon. And now I was hoping I could hang out with my beautiful wife.

Lily: Aww. Sweet. Um, okay, I’m gonna go back to work.

[ Chuckles ] Good to see you.

Chance: Good to see you.

Lily: Bye.

Abby: Why do I feel like my wonderful husband is up to something?

Chance: Oh, because I am. I know I’ve been working so much lately, I’m afraid I’ve been kind of neglecting you.

Abby: No, you haven’T.

Chance: Yes, I have. And you’ve been a good sport about it. I appreciate that. And I’m guessing you’re not too happy about it. So, think you can ditch work for a little while? Got a surprise for you.

Abby: Mmm.

Nikki: Victor isn’t paving the way for anyone. He simply wanted to make sure that she didn’t get in any deeper with ashland, in business or anything else. This was not a calculated move against you. He’s simply trying to protect his daughter.

Adam: Oh, yes. All that famous victor newman protection. Isn’t that why my sister left town in the first place?

Nikki: You know, I don’t want to get into any of this with you right now.

Adam: Okay. I would be glad to drop the subject. Perhaps you could bring me up to speed on the hong kong deal.

Nikki: Sure. Everything things to be on track and we can probably close it.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Adam: Great.

[ Sighs ] What is it?

Nikki: It’s a text from victor. “Plane landed early. Victoria already gone. Have you heard from her?”

[ Sighs ] What on earth is she up to?

Nick: I mean, let’s start with ashland. Where is he? Don’t get me wrong. I respect your right to make your own choices, but I’m sure hoping you kicked his ass to a park avenue curb.

Victoria: I will explain everything soon, but, first, i need you to do me a big favor. I need you to get mom and dad to meet me at the office as soon as possible.

Nick: You mean, adam’s new office.

Victoria: Yes. And I would like for you to ask him to be there, as well. He needs to hear this. I’m sure it’s not gonna be that big of an imposition on him, because he’s probably already sleeping there.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Funny.

Victoria: Thank you. I’ll be there soon. I’m just gonna get freshened up first.

Nick: Yeah, uh, cool. Um, before I go, will you just promise me that you’re back for good?

Victoria: I am. But things are gonna have to change. Only two things are forever:

Imani: How’s it going?

Nate: Um, can’t complain. I know you were going to see your mom today. How is she doing?

Imani: Unfortunately, things aren’t great.

Nate: Oh, sorry to hear that.

Imani: I’m trying not to dwell on it too much, so that i don’t become a total mess. I’ve been focusing on my work so I won’t have time to obsess over my mother’s condition.

Nate: Yeah, I get it. I’ve found solace in work during stressful times myself. Anything you want to run by me?

Imani: I’m glad you asked. There is something I wanted to follow up on.

Nate: Okay, shoot.

Imani: [ Sighs ] I-I know you’ve been eager to get elena out of her newman contract so that she could start a chancellor-winters podcast. But, unfortunately, it looks like bringing her over to our side may be harder than i thought.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Imani: [ Sighs ]

Abby: Look at this. It’s all of my favorite goodies. This is amazing.

Chance: Oh, that’s not all. Check it out. Look at our little man.

Abby: Oh! [ Laughs ] He is so adorable. I mean, he’s just perfect.

Chance: Yeah. I took that this morning after you left. Look at his little chunky arm waving at you.

Abby: [ Laughs ]

Chance: “Go have fun, mom and dad.”

Abby: Mmm, my boy.

Chance: [ Chuckles ]

Abby: Look, I love that you did all of this for me. But I really hope you don’t think you’ve been neglecting me, ’cause I really don’t feel that way at all. I am so proud of you for the way that you have been honoring rey’s memory. It’s thoughtful and it is exactly what rey would have wanted. In fact, your dedication to your partner makes me love you even more.

Chance: Oh. Well, if that makes you love me even more, wait till you see what’s for dessert.

Abby: Oh, I can’t wait.

Chance: [ Chuckles ] Mmm.

Victoria: I gather that this hasn’t penetrated for you, because you’ve come to see me as someone that you can still manipulate, someone who thinks they can’t live their life without you. Well, guess what? I’m looking forward to it. And as to what you should do, I don’t care. Disappear. We’re through. I don’t want to see you or hear from you ever again.

[ Sighs ] Billy?

Billy: Victoria. Hey. Um, listen, is everything alright?

Victoria: I’m — [ Sighs ] I’m better than alright. I’m actually better than I have been in a long time. I have taken a huge step forward in my life. And there’s no looking back now. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Devon: You got to believe me that I know… what you’re going through. There’s been so many times in my life that I’ve wished I could control things that I can’T. I’ve lost a lot of people in my life. You know that.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Devon: From dru and neil and hilary, our child. It’s a lot.

Amanda: So much sadness. I’m sorry.

Devon: It’s — there’s nothing for you to be sorry about. It is, but there’s times where truly all you can do is just your best to get through it. And if imani wants to act tough and she wants to act like what your mom is going through isn’t bothering her, that’s fine. She can do that. You don’t have to, though. You never have to do that, ’cause you have me. You have me to lean on. You have me to cry to and to vent to. And that’s forever. ‘Cause we’re not just living together. We’re building a life together. Right?

Amanda: [ Sighs ] You have — you’ve given me an emotional security that I’ve never had before. And it feels comforting, and it feels empowering, but… it also feels really scary.

Devon: Why?

Amanda: Because… it just — it feels so fragile. And I’m scared that it might go away, and then I’m just gonna be alone.

Devon: Mnh-mnh, mnh-mnh. Stop it. Stop it. Listen to me.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Devon: You feel that, right? As long as that’s beating, you will never be alone again. Promise you.

Imani: Elena’s contract with newman media is airtight. It’s not gonna be easy getting her out of it.

Nate: [ Sighs ] I really hate that legal red tape could keep her from joining our team.

Imani: I know you put a clock on this. When is elena heading to hawaii?

Nate: Oh, she’s probably boarding her flight right about now.

Imani: Well, with elena gone, I guess we’ll just have to work together to figure this out.

Nate: Thank you for staying on top of this for me. I really want elena to work with us, so counting on you to make that happen.

Imani: Of course.

Nate: Honestly, it’s more than just wanting to work with elena again. I’ve really got to do everything I can to fulfill the promise I made at the launch party about the upcoming podcasts. Frankly, we don’t have the numbers I committed to yet.

Imani: Oh. I get it, and I’m glad you confided in me. I feel a little responsible, since I’m the one who encouraged you to go big when you made your speech, which makes me want to help you even more now. So we will work together and figure out a way to make your promise a reality.

Nate: My first thought is, maybe we need to meet with the new head of newman media — sally spectra. I prefer to take a personal approach.

Imani: So do I. I could set up a meeting, and i could even go with you and field any legal questions.

Nate: Good idea.

Imani: Okay, well, I’ll get on it.

Nate: Much appreciated.

Imani: Mm-hmm.

[ Sighs ] Yes, uh, I need a reservation for tomorrow night. For two.

Billy: Well, I’m happy to hear that you’re sounding so strong. I was getting a little worried, there.

Victoria: I’m sorry, I should have reached out earlier. Everything was just moving so quickly. But I wanted you to know that I’m back in town, and everything’s changed now. I’ll fill you in later. I’d like to talk to my family first. I’m actually meeting with them now.

Billy: Hey, vick, before you hang up, can I just ask… is ashland in the picture or not?

Victoria: You can breather easier. Ashland locke is finally out of my life for good.

Ashland: I need to charter a plane to chicago.

[ Sighs ] Yes. Today. For you I wish many things…

Abby: Ah. It’s a perfect day for a perfect surprise.

Chance: Well, only the best for my perfect wife.

Abby: Mmm.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Chance: Hold on. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

[ Sighs ]

Abby: I can tell by the look on your face that that’s work. And it’s important, isn’t it?

Chance: They just got a new tip on one of rey’s cases. Got to be dealt with immediately. But you know what? Somebody else can handle it.

Abby: No, no, you should go. This is your personal mission. You have to see it through.

Chance: What, and leave all this perfection? No.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Chance: Absolutely not. No way. Besides, the whole point of this was to spend uninterrupted time with you.

Abby: I know, but just the fact that you put all this together for me, it means so much. And besides, we have the rest of our lives to go on picnics together.

Chance: Are you sure?

Abby: Yes. Go. Go. [ Chuckles ]

Chance: I love you.

Nate: So, how’d it go? Any luck getting ms. Spectra to meet with us?

Imani: I charmed her assistant, got her to put me through to the woman herself.

Nate: Nice.

Imani: I even managed to get her to join us for dinner tomorrow. I made reservations for the three of us. Time for us to work some magic.

Lily: Oh, hey, I’m glad you’re back. So, I had a very interesting conversation with abby.

Billy: Hold that thought for one second, because I had a very interesting conversation with victoria. She is back in genoa city.

Lily: So, did she dump ashland?

Billy: Apparently, yeah. And to be honest, I had no idea just how much this was weighing on me. I really did not want to have the conversation with the kids where I explain to them why their mother suddenly left town.

Lily: Yeah. No, I mean, it’s good they don’t have to go through that.

Billy: It’s great. To be honest, I feel very inspired. I think now is the time to lighten up my podcasts a little bit and have a little fun. You know, I could talk about how we have to trust the people that we surround ourselves with, and have faith in the process.

Lily: Yeah, I don’t think the disastrous end to a dramatic relationship is cause for celebration.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, i realize it’s a holiday weekend. I realize that. So let’s look at this as — i don’t know — a challenge as opposed to a setback. So, this is what you need to do. You need to e-mail our regular spa clients, and you need to tell them about our state-of-the-art equipment, alright? I spent a lot of money on this stuff, and if we don’t get people in there, well, you’re not gonna have much of a staff left. Exactly. Inspirational. I like that. That was inspirational. I got to get back to you. Hey, diane. You need a bell around your neck.

[ Clears throat ] What can I help you with?

Diane: Well, I’m so glad you asked. In light of our recent truce, i thought it’d be wonderful if i could go back to having full access of your top-of-the-line gym and spa.

Phyllis: Why? I hear that the athletic club has more than adequate equipment for, you know, the average guest.

Diane: [ Sighs ] We can be honest with each other, can’t we, now that we’re family? Your equipment is a cut above, and astrid’s massages have made a new woman out of me.

Phyllis: Um… I can’t help you. I’m really sorry. We have an agreement with the athletic club that they don’t poach our clients, we don’t poach theirs. Besides, we are all booked up.

Diane: Oh. Huh. Funny you should say that because I could have sworn i just heard you complaining that you were desperate for customers.

Phyllis: I was not saying that, that I was a desperate for customers. I just — you misunderstood. Diane, we have the right to refuse service to anyone.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] You don’t have any grounds to do that where I’m concerned. I’m wearing shoes, I’m not drunk, and I’m certainly not being disruptive.

Phyllis: Um, you were escorted off the premises before.

Diane: Oh, but, phyllis, that was back when we were bitter rivals. If that ban still holds, then that means our truce isn’t really real. I would hate to think our détente was just on paper, and i know other people would be disappointed, too.

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. Listen to you. Are you threatening me right now? Are you gonna tattle on me if i don’t give you an appointment at my hotel? Wow.

Summer: Hi, guys.

Diane: Hi, summer.

Phyllis: Hey, supergirl

Summer: Hi. What’s going on here with you two peace-makers?

Diane: Oh, I was thinking because your mother has been so generous to declare a truce that I would spend my self-care money here. So, I was just telling phyllis what a fabulous job she’s done creating such a restorative oasis.

And — and I hope there’s no part of you that’s doing this because of my dna. I need to know that this is based purely on merit and not out of some sense of guilt you feel for the years that you lost with my dad.

Kyle: Smart. And I know this sucks, tessa, especially on the heels of your album dropping, but in another way, couldn’t be better timing.

Kyle: Well, if you’re forced to take a break from your singing career, it may give you more time to focus on your adoption plans.

Mariah: Uh…actually, we’ve, uh — we’ve put that on hold for a little bit to deal with us.

Diane: Yeah.

Kyle: No, no, no, no. I’m not ditching anyone, and I’m not leaving jabot. I’m just vacating my co-ceo seat to run our newest acquisition. I think it’s important to learn the ins and outs of marchetti and maximize the value to jabot.

Kyle: Exactly. You know, it’s been fun running the family business with my dad, and I learned more than I could have picked up in any other situation, but when summer came to me with this proposition, I couldn’t say no.

Mariah: And how did jack take the news?

Kyle: He’s all for it, happy for me, just like I hope you will be eventually.

Mariah: You being home is amazing. I mean,you’ve even had a positive effect on summer, who’s come back from italy, dare I say it, likeable?

Phyllis: Oh, gosh. You’ve become a believer, haven’t you? Wow. You’ve accepted diane as entrusted member of this family. And kyle — he’s just welcomed her back, no problems, no questions. And jack probably feels the same, doesn’t he? Am I right?

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Noah: I have unearthed something so incredible, so exciting, I know you’re gonna love it just as much as I do.

Allie: Okay. Do I get a clue?

Noah: You know, it’s funny that you should mention clues because it’s an old radio mystery show. Listen to the story, find all the evidence, solve the crime.

Allie: Oh, I can totally get into that.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Allie: Wait, but you could’ve, you know, saved yourself a trip and just texted me the link.

Noah: See, that’s the thing. It’s actually not online. Trust me. I looked. A friend of mine turned me onto it. I made some recordings, and… I got you this. It’s an mp3 player. That way, you can listen to it.

Phyllis: Okay, well, then there’s nothing to tell. Accept that.

Summer: I’m not gonna accept it, because I care about you. I care about you and I care about jack. I can see that you’re both hurting. I can tell that jack is heartbroken over this.

Phyllis: Okay. [ Sighs ] I mean, I’m not happy about that.

Summer: What aren’t you happy about? You know, summer… honestly, I… cannot accept… that jack has just… let diane back into the family… after everything that bitch has done to me. And he just expects me to be fine and go along with it. I cannot do that. And I’m sorry about what happened. And — and I do feel bad.

Elena: Uh, yeah, it is. It’s me. I’m the problem. I’m going to this medical convention in hawaii, and I am the great procrastinator when it comes to packing.

Elena: That’s hard to predict, but I would think of this as more of a detour. You will get back on track once you fix the problem. But I don’t want you to rush your recovery.

Noah: No, no, no, no.

Allie: That still doesn’t put him on top of your suspect pile?

Noah: Emotions are not facts, because there’s incontrovertible proof that the third wife was involved.

Allie: Okay. Name it.

Noah: The neighbor said that they heard strange noises in the middle of the night.

Allie: She was walking in her sleep.

Noah: I think she was chasing her victims.

Allie: Okay, it is the husband, with an ax.

Noah: Unh-unh.

Allie: Mm-hmm.

Noah: Wife, with poison drinks. Alright, look, if you’re so sure of yourself, how about we make this a little bit more interesting.

Jack: I hope this isn’t another interrogation about the nature of my relationship with phyllis.

Kyle: I know she’s a touchy subject.

Jack: I am not exactly champing at the bit to share the intricacies of my romantic life with my son.

Kyle: You think I want to talk about your love life? I said I would stay out of it —

Jack: You don’t have enough going on in your own life? You have marchetti, a young family. You shared with me, you still don’t know if you can trust diane.

Kyle: I need to know if she did something underhanded or duplicitous. Now that she’s working for me and marchetti, I can’t get summer’s initial suspicions that my mother was involved out of my head.

Jack: Okay, your mother’s career and my personal life have nothing to do with each other.

Kyle: I can’t be sure about that until you tell me what’s going on. At mariah’s wedding, you and phyllis seemed genuinely happy, and I know you spent the night together. You admitted as much. But then something went wrong.

Kyle: The other night, when phyllis saw all of us together, she looked said and lost. She was trying to keep it civil, but it was clearly difficult for her, and it wasn’t lost on me that my mother was stirring the pot by inviting her over to join us and toasting her.

Jack: It was not an ideal situation.

Kyle: I need you to be completely honest with me, because I need to know if this new relationship I’m building with my mother will work. I want to know if everything she’s doing is aboveboard. So, dad, just tell me. Did my mother do something to sabotage what was happening between you and phyllis?

Jack: I am only going to tell you this because I don’t want you misinterpreting or blaming diane for this situation. I might not trust her, but that’s not fair to her.

Kyle: Okay. I just want to know the truth.

Jack: Yes, I honestly thought phyllis and I were in a good place. Our friendship was strong. We agreed that we weren’t gonna rush anything, we’re gonna take our time. She was there for me when i learned about keemo there in D.A., When I met allie. Of course, that brought in diane. Even that, I thought that would bond us somehow, both finding out that she was alive. I just thought we were in a better place, that maybe there was a chance we could move on to the next level.

Phyllis: Things were going well between me and jack. They were going well. We were in synch, and it was great. And then I screwed up. I just screwed up, and I made a mistake. And it was like the old me.

[ Sighs ] I regret what I did. I shouldn’t have done it. But… summer, having that woman come back into my life, I can’T. I mean, it turned everything upside-down. I mean, jack doesn’t understand. He doesn’t get it. And I regret what I did, and i told him I regret what I did. But, I mean, it was just a knee-jerk reaction, that’s all, because that woman pushes my buttons. She gets to me.

[ Voice breaking ] And sometimes I feel like I’m losing control.

[ Sobs ]

Jack: That is when I realized there was a connection between the two, that this thing between us had escalated, had grown physical because of diane’s reappearance.

Kyle: You don’t think phyllis would intentionally use you like that? She might be reckless, but she doesn’t lie about her feelings.

Jack: That’s the thing. It doesn’t matter if what she’s feeling is real. It’s just as real that she went back to the way she was in the old days. I’m telling you, her worse attributes came out to play as soon as diane came back. All the things she claims she had gotten beyond, all the things that I argued with her, that she’d outgrown. Turns out I was wrong. Turns out that’s not possible.

Kyle: Almost sounds like you’re more willing to give the benefit of the doubt to my mother than phyllis.

Jack: I have decades of history with her, son. She always reverts to type. It’s like a rubber band snapping back. She can’t help herself. She’s got to get her jabs in! She’s got to punish diane, and she can’t just stop. She can’t help herself, and i can’t live with the constant threat that she’s going back to her old self.

Kyle: I mean, I still don’t understand. What exactly did phyllis do?

Jack: She made sure diane witnessed what I foolishly thought was… an intimate, meaningful moment between us.

Phyllis: But what jack refuses to believe is that it didn’t make what happened between us any less important. Of course it was important. I mean, did I want to stick diane’s nose into it? Yeah, I did. Did I escalate things because diane was in town? Yeah! But it doesn’t make him less important to me. And what he doesn’t understand is that — that my feelings were sincere and my feelings are real. He doesn’t — he doesn’t seem to understand that.

Summer: Okay, let me see if i have all of this straight. You moved forward with things with jack, and as much as it was about the bond that you guys shared, it was also about making a point to diane? You were, like, marking your territory?

Noah: Alright, this is it.

Allie: Shh.

Noah: Now, I hope you’re ready for total and complete humiliation, ’cause it’s about to happen.

Allie: Oh, do you, um — do you cry when you lose? I-I just want to know. It’s completely acceptable, but in case I have to get you tissues or call someone to calm you down.

Noah: Oh, yeah, yeah, I cry. I’m gonna be crying with laughter as I watch you suss through all the clues that you’ve gathered and wound up with the wrong conclusion.

Allie: [ Chuckles ] You wish.

Noah: No, I hate to break it to you, but I think your career as a detective is gonna be over before it’s even begun. Alright, I’m done, I’m done. Let’s lock back in. Come on.

Allie: Oh, oh, are we gonna listen to this and find out who the culprit is, or are you just gonna keep talking trash and embarrassing yourself? Because, you know, that’s fine, too.

Noah: Wow, you really are an abbott.

Allie: Spoken like a true newman.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Allie: [ Chuckles ]

[ Click ] Ax. See?

Noah: Mnh-mnh. Arsenic. I told you.

Allie: Minor detail.

Noah: Wait. What —

Allie: Shh!

Noah: The best friend?

Allie: The best friend? How?

Noah: We must have missed something.

Allie: No, that makes no logical sense — zero.

Noah: [ Sighs ] Drang, how does it feel to be so phenomenally wrong?

Allie: Okay, no, you were wrong, too.

Noah: Oh, but not nearly as wrong as you.

Allie: Oh, there are no shades of wrong. Incorrect is incorrect.

Noah: Okay.

Allie: You — I’m sorry, but you are never gonna rise above the ranks of a “mediocre armchair detective.”

Noah: It’s true. Neither will you.

Allie: This was fun. It’s a cute gift. You know, how did you know that I like antiques? I can probably sell this to a museum one day.

Noah: Guess you’ll have to hold on to it, then.

Allie: Yeah. I guess I will.

Kyle: Couldn’t have been easy, finding out that phyllis used you like that. I’m sorry, dad.

Jack: Yeah, you live and you learn.

Jack: I really thought you two would make it work this time.

Jack: So did I.

Kyle: I mean, to be honest… this is concerning. If phyllis still hates my mother that much, to the extent where she would use you to drive her point home, are they headed for a showdown?

Jack: I don’t know. I hope not. But the thought has crossed my mind.

Kyle: Phyllis claimed to my mother that the past was behind them. But if it was that easy for her to relapse, who’s to say she won’t do it again? And if our mothers go to war, what could that do to me and summer?

Phyllis: What was gonna happen between jack and I was inevitable. It was gonna happen. I pushed it along. Did I stick diane’s nose in it? Yeah, I did. And you know what? It felt good, and it was a bonus. But jack knows me well enough to know that I’m sorry. I am sorry, and my feelings for him are real. They are real. They are. And it’s not some act of retribution. It’s not. Really.

Summer: Mom, I’m not judging you, but I do think that jack is one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. And he deserves to be loved and adored and cared for. He deserves a lot better treatment than what you showed him.

Victor: Yeah, I don’t have any more news than what I’ve told you earlier, okay? But I have a good feeling about this.

Nikki: With very little basis for it.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Victor: Well, we’ll soon find out.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Whatever that means.

Victor: It means that the pilot has some interesting news about the company jet. Hmm.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: Hi, honey. You heading home?

Nick: Yeah, I got some work i got to do.

Victor: No, son, just hang on for a moment. You need to know this.

Nick: Know what? Is there news?

Victor: Well, the pilot has informed me that… victoria filed a flight plan to new york, and then right back to genoa city.

Nikki: [ Gasps ] She’s coming home?

Nick: How many passengers?

Victor: She’s by herself.

Nikki: Oh, thank god. Thank god.

Nick: Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, all right? We haven’t actually spoken to her, so we don’t know what any of this means.

Billy: Why so serious?

Ashland: Oh. What’s going on?

Sally: Chloe doesn’t have to be a fan of yours to be an amazing right hand for me.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You know what? You’re right. Just forget I said anything, okay? I want you to have whatever you need to do your best here.

Sally: Thank you. I appreciate that.

Adam: So if you think chloe is a good fit for coo of newman media, then bring her aboard. Convince her it’s a good fit, regardless of her feelings for me.

Sally: Well, if chloe really wants to end her partnership with chelsea, I want to scoop her up before anybody else does.

Adam: Well, like I said before, chelsea came by earlier. She was there to have me sign some papers for connor’s camp, but I could tell that she was, uh, struggling.

Sally: Because of rey rosales’ passing. Yeah, chloe said that she’s been having a hard time.

Adam: Connor is, too. But true to form, she’s using work as a crutch. She’s avoiding her emotional well-being, and it has created a rift between her and chloe.

Sally: Well, that’s an understatement, because based on what she told me, chloe is truly at the end of her rope.

Adam: Yeah. It’s gonna be even more of an issue if she decides to accept the gig to do a new line for marchetti.

Sally: What?

Adam: Mm.

Sally: Well, I knew the company was moving here, but why would marchetti switch designers?

Adam: I don’t know. I don’t know, but summer wants to hire chelsea, apparently.

Sally: Well, it’s an incredible opportunity.

Adam: But she already thinks chloe is trying to micromanage her. And chloe doesn’t want her to take the job at marchetti because she thinks she can’t even handle the workload she already has.

Sally: Well, do you think chloe’s right?

Adam: I know chloe is right, because I know chelsea, and I made my thoughts on that subject very clear.

Sally: How did she respond to that?

Adam: She got defensive and accused me of criticizing her. She just — she’s not listening to any reason.

I mean, chloe wouldn’t badmouth a friend, but I can tell she’s just about had it. Chelsea isn’t holding up her end of the partnership, which is causing a strain on their friendship, too. Though, maybe parting ways… is the best thing for both of them.

Chelsea: Let’s see if I have the whole list of sins. I’m inconsiderate, ungrateful, I don’t send 100 apologetic text messages when I’m gonna be 5 minutes late.

Chloe: It was over an hour, chelsea — this time. You’re bitchy to me, you pick fights, I am tap dancing every damn day around the people who actually make our clothes because you’ve suddenly decided that deadlines are optional.

Chelsea: I’ve been under a lot of stress, too, okay? In case you haven’t noticed.

Chloe: Oh, my god, I have noticed. It’s like I have —

[ Breathes deeply ] You’re allver the place. I can’t keep up. I mean, I have tried every way I know how to help you navigate your emotional ups and downs. Meanwhile, all I get is snark and putdowns. You call me controlling. Well, you’re impossible. Things can’t go on this way.

Chelsea: “Things can’t go on this way”? What do you mean by that, exactly?

Adam: No. No, not at all. I didn’t have any issues with chloe when we were creating the fashion platform. In fact, in the brief time it was up and running, I thought we did some pretty good things. I just — I don’t know if it’s still a problem for her. That’s all.

Sally: Well, I mean, it’s not as though she’d be working for

you this time. She would be my direct report, and you promised me autonomy.

Adam: Mm-hmm, and you will have it, ’cause I have total faith in your judgment.

Sally: Well, if I had a nickel for every person who told me that, I would have… a nickel.

Adam: I don’t think our old conflicts are gonna be a stumbling block for chloe but just something to keep in mind when you’re negotiating with her.

Sally: Yeah. No, I will just focus on how great it is to work here and the fabulous job that I know she will do.

Adam: Great. Knowing the media arm is in good hands, now I can focus on other areas.

Sally: Oh. So the better chloe and I do, the less she’ll see of you.

Adam: Bonus.

Sally: Okay. Then I’m — I’m gonna do this.

Adam: Great. And, honestly, I think dissolving the partnership is gonna be good for chelsea in the long run. This way, she can take the job at marchetti.

Sally: I love how supportive you are of people who matter to you. Including me.

Adam: If I ever neglect to show you how grateful I am for you —

Sally: Never happen. Because I intend to make it easy for you to keep showing me… every day.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Adam: Um, someone has lousy timing.

Sally: Mm-hmm.

Adam: What the —

Sally: Problem?

Adam: The newman jet is en route to new york. I booked it to go to pittsburgh with connor for the game tonight.

Sally: Yeah, I remember. Some father-son time.

Adam: Yeah, well, now I have no way to get there. Um… it must have been dad who bumped me. He’s one of the few people that can make them.

Adam: I just — I don’t know why this sudden and urgent need to, uh, go to new york. Yeah. Hey, it’s adam newman. I got your text. Um, why is the jet going to new york? Who requested it? Victoria?

Victor: Billy boy, this is a family discussion, okay? If I were you, I’d continue wallowing in that trivial crap to prepare for your next stupid podcast. Okay?

Billy: Ooh! You’re a listener. Hot damn. I’m gonna have to tell the team. They’re gonna be ecstatic about that. Now, personally, I’m more interested in this dramatic family discussion that we’re having. Have we heard from victoria?

Nikki: The answer is no. None of us have spoken to her today.

Billy: But you know something? Don’t try to deny it, because I know that I’m right. You know, I wasn’t exactly thrilled about the concept of having a conversation with johnny and katie about why their parents are living so far apart. However, I am thrilled for victoria that she’s finally breaking free and walking away from the man that’s been pulling at her strings since she was in diapers. It’s a shock to the system, huh, pops?

Nick: Billy, what mom said was the truth. We don’t know anything specific. We were just talking about how frustrating it is. And it’s a family matter, so… bye.

Billy: It’s all good. I’m sure I’ll hear from her. Probably even before you do because we do share those kids together. Facts of life. Enjoy.

Nikki: Thanks for sending him on his way.

Victor: That man is consummate pain in the ass, you know? And why he’s still involved in our family is beyond me, but such it is.

Nick: Let’s not waste any time on billy, all right? The only thing we need to concentrate on right now is making sure victoria is okay.

Victor: You’re right. You’re right.

Ashland: Uh, were you planning to sneak off without me?

Victoria: No, of course not. What are you doing back here so soon?

Ashland: Well, I left my tablet behind. It’s got all of our new company information on it, our corporate account number, login credentials, that kind of thing, so…

Victoria: It’s very lucky you remembered it.

Ashland: Yeah, it is. It would’ve been pretty lame if I couldn’t back up our interest in buying a big building in new york city with this proof of funding, which, of course, I can, because… because now we put our money together in a big account — $500 million. I’m sorry. Weren’t you — weren’t you on your way to the lawyer’s office?

[ Cellphone chimes ] Victor’s text to you. What’s that about?

Victoria: I have no idea.

Ashland: Oh. No, I’m sorry. I’m just, uh… very interested in what victor might have to say to you right now. It’s, uh… “jet is on the way. Are you all right?” Evidently, you were planning on sneaking off.

Victoria: No.

Ashland: Victoria… don’t lie to me. When you really need to sleep.

Chelsea: Are you quitting? Abandoning our deal with fenmore? Leaving me in the lurch with marchetti? You wouldn’t possibly consider dissolving our partnership, because without me, there is no business.

Chloe: See? There you go. Right there. Zero to 60 in a millisecond. When I say this isn’t working, it means I want to find a way that it caN. A new approach to our partnership so that we are both operating at our best. A better way of communicating that doesn’t involve you getting so angry and defensive.

Chelsea: I can’t believe I’m hearing this for my supposed best friend. Things don’t always go smoothly, chloe. That’s the nature of collaboration. I thought you knew that.

Chloe: That’s not what I’m saying.

Chelsea: What I do is not easy. Coming up with new ideas all the time? You act like just anybody can do it. You know what? I am sick of you not appreciating what I bring to the table.

Chloe: How dare you say that? After all I’ve done for you.

Chelsea: All you’ve done for me?

Adam: Right. Well, thank you for letting me know.

Sally: What does this have to do with victoria?

Adam: She’s the one that sent for the jet, and dad signed off on it.

Sally: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Soon as she boards at laguardia, the pilot is coming back here immediately with victoria as the sole passenger.

Sally: What could that possibly mean?

Adam: Can only mean one thing. Dad’s made up his mind. Victoria’s in, I am out. That’s it. Game over. Okay. Dad got his wish. The return of the prodigal daughter.

Sally: Okay, slow down. You went right to the worst-case scenario. We don’t know that’s what’s happening.

Adam: Yes, we do. We do. Sally, you don’t know these people like I do. Machiavellian behavior is the newman stock in trade.

Sally: Okay. Well, the way you described the blowout with victoria and her family before she left, turning her back on all of you forever, not telling you where she and ashland were going, doesn’t really sound like a woman who ever planned on looking back.

Adam: Exactly. You just made my point for me. So, what changed?

Victoria: I’m not lying to you. I have no reason to lie. I sent for the jet. It’s taking me genoa city.

Ashland: I see. Did — did victor get to you? Did he issue some kind of ultimatum?

Victoria: No, ashland. This decision is mine and mine alone. My father had nothing to do with it.

Ashland: Okay. So, um… so I guess this separation has been more challenging for you than — than I thought. I mean, cutting — cutting ties with your family, moving a thousand miles away — it’s — it’s a lot.

Victoria: I regret some of the things that I said to them, but it was necessary.

Ashland: In order for you to prove your independence.

Victoria: Yes.

Ashland: But now you’re having second thoughts about walking away from your family?

Victoria: I could never leave my family. And the fact that you would think that shows how little you know me.

Ashland: I-I-I’m sorry. I still don’t know that i understand. So you’re going back to your family to ask forgiveness…

Victoria: No.

Ashland: …Without even telling me.

Victoria: I had every intention of telling you everything. You just caught me off guard by coming back here so soon.

[ Breathes deeply ] The plan was to have my bags packed and be ready to go and have a moment to compose myself so I could decide exactly what I wanted to say to you. Oh, well. Here it goes. You and I will not be forming a new corporation together. And this move to new york was not about starting a new life with you. It was a calculated move to cut ties with you and to end your connection with me and my family for good. You know, you did everything exactly as I hoped you would do. You agreed to invest your own money, and you transferred what was left of the $500 million that my father gave you into the corporate account that I created. By the way, I have since drained that account, and now you have exactly what you deserve. Nothing. So maybe now you have a clearer understanding of exactly who I am… and what you’re dealing with. Most bladder leak pads were similar.

Chloe: Look. I am not keeping score. But I have come through for you so many times. As a result of your medical issues — which were not your fault — you went down a dark path, and you made me your unwitting co-conspirator.

Chelsea: And clearly, you still hold a grudge against me for that.

Chloe: No, of course not. But kevin works for the police, and if my involvement habecome part of the original investigation, we would’ve been in a lot of trouble.

Chelsea: Which is why I went along with victor’s plan. I confessed evetothing, and I went to the hospital. I protected you. So please don’t act like this is a one-sided friendship.

Chloe: All I am saying is that you worry yourself. Your whole life had gone off the rails. And you needed time. You needed time to heal and recover. You couldn’t even think about working.

Chelsea: And now you’re throwing that in my face?

Chloe: I am reminding you that even at your lowest, I was there, like always. I bent over backwards to buy you time. I worked for adam for you. I set up the whole fashion platform for you so that you would have a safe place to land, doing the work that you love once you felt well enough. I mean, I did what it took to keep things going, even though you left me dangling, claiming that you weren’t even sure if you wanted the job. I-I practically begged you to come back to work with me because I knew that it would be good for you and because I love working with you.

Chelsea: Well, lately, it doesn’t seem like that.

Chloe: I find it impossible to comprehend that you would even suggest that I don’t appreciate your talent. That I am not a good enough friend to you? That hurts. Yes, I am trying to find a way to make our partnership work, but I am also trying to preserve our friendship.

Sally: Victoria made this big declaration of independence and tied it to a man whose entire life is based on lies, who claims — how did he word it? — That he has been changed by victoria’s love?

Adam: Yeah, what a crock. I never, ever believed that.

Sally: Yeah, well, she certainly seemed to. So maybe, now that victoria has calmed down, she regrets the way she left things here, and maybe she’s coming back to make peace with her folks so they can continue to be a part of her life, even if it’s not the life that mommy and daddy envisioned for her.

Adam: I suppose that could be the case.

Sally: Victoria seems like a practical woman. She’s gonna want to know that she has her family’s support in case she ever needs it.

Adam: Or maybe ashland already pulled some new crap.

Sally: Could be.

Adam: Something that finally opened her eyes and made her realize everything that she had given up.

Sally: If victoria is so in love with the guy that she forgave for the whole faking cancer scam, I doubt that she would turn on him so fast because she’s too proud and she’s invested too much time.

Adam: Well, there could be a lot that we don’t know.

Sally: I get that. So we can’t rule out anything, like the possibility that, yes, maybe she is trying to come back to reclaim her place at newman. Keyword — “try.” Because if that is the case, she’s gonna have you to contend with.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Look, we have come way too far, babe. Don’t panic. It’s not gonna do us any good. It’s just gonna cloud our thinking when we need to be at our sharpest.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Good point. Thank you.

Sally: Any time.

Adam: What we need is more information. We need to figure out what we’re dealing with so we can act accordingly.

Nikki: I want to believe that victoria came to her senses, that something happened to make her realize that she made a terrible mistake.

Nick: That’s what we all hope.

Victor: Certainly possible.

Nikki: Or…could she be coming here to confront you about discouraging those investors behind her back? Because she was very clear about you interfering in her life any more.

Nick: Maybe ashland realized that he would always be facing that kind of hostility and decided he’d had enough. I mean, do you think there’s a chance that he broke things off?

Nikki: I just cannot bear the thought of that man hurting victoria again.

Victoria: Did you really think that I was so completely under your spell that you could just do anything that you wanted to do, and I would forgive you for it? Every single minute we were together was a lie. It was a massive betrayal. I loved you. I cared about you while you pretended to be overwhelmed by your illness. I suffered at the prospect of watching you die over this non-existent disease. Every day — every single day — I felt dread in the pit of my stomach over this. And when I learned the truth of — of what you had done, it didn’t just break my heart, it crushed me. Yeah, I know, I know, I know. You saved my life by pulling me from…a burning car. But, honestly, I’m not sure that that was really a selfless act.

Ashland: I saved your life because I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you.

Victoria: That wasn’t enough to erase what you did to me and my entire family. You didn’t deserve that payoff money from my dad. And giving half of the money to nicholas? That was a transparent act. You did it to impress me and to try to ease your guilt. I don’t even know if you’re capable of feeling guilt. I doubt it. I decided that I wasn’t going to let you take anything from them. So I came up with a plan to get it back — by lying to you and deceiving you the same way that you did to me.

Victor: Well, I, for one, am going to assume that victoria is in control of the situation. And that it was her decision to come back home.

Nikki: Let’s say you’re right that victoria’s coming home for good. Then what? Have you made any long-term decisions about where adam fits into the company?

Victor: I’m not going to make any decisions right now until I’ve talked to victoria.

Nick: I think that’s wise, dad. Even if victoria is leaving this jerk, I think she meant what she said about wanting her independence. And everything’s up in the air until we actually talk to victoria and figure out what’s going on.

Victoria: I know that you view the world in terms of profits and losses. It drives everything that you do. You have to win at all costs. I don’t even think you’re capable of feeling remorse. And certainly not love. But there it is right there, in black and white. Balance — zero. Your fortune is gone, and I know that hits you right where you live.

Ashland: This isn’t what you want.

Victoria: How the hell do you know what I really want, huh?

[ Scoffs ] That’s why I was able to pull this off so easily. Because you’re so arrogant. You think that you have this hold on me that nobody can break.

Ashland: Our love was not a scam. It was real.

Victoria: Yes, it was. It was. At least on my part. And, yes, I held on to those residual feelings a little bit longer than I should have when I learned the truth about you. But every word that I have said to you since I got back from switzerland has been a lie.

Ashland: Right. And I should have known something was wrong when you insisted on taking things slowly.

Victoria: Yeah, because you wanted to believe all the bull that I told you about starting over again. It’s the, um…secret of any successful con.

Ashland: Yes, it is. You got me. Congratulations.

Victoria: Well, so I’ve bared my entire soul to you. I think maybe it’s only fair — and I’m dying to know — how does it feel? How does it feel to be so completely wrong about me? To be bested and stripped of all of your ill gotten gains?

Ashland: You do understand you’ve just committed fraud.

Victoria: [ Laughs ] Fraud? Oh, that’s, um…

Ashland: So this is you stooping to my level. For money. Or — or was it just to prove that you could do it?

Victoria: Go ahead. I dare you. I dare you to try to accuse me of anything. I will let the world know exactly what you are capable of and the levels to which you will stoop. I have proof to back it up, and I can destroy your life with one phone call.

Ashland: And if you feel satisfied now, a sense of triumph? Was it worth it?

Victoria: Yes.

Chloe: I want to focus on solving the work problem.

Chelsea: By which you mean me.

Chloe: This dynamic. Every time I express concern or offer my advice, you lash out. Insist on taking it personally.

Chelsea: Because it is personal. You make it personal. I have asked you several times just to back off, to tru me, to trust the process.

Chloe: And you’re so wrong about that.

Chelsea: I am speaking!

[ Scoffs ] A prime example. Designing for marchetti would be a dream opportunity for me, and you won’t even consider the idea.

Chloe: I was merely suggesting, as someone who knows you and knows how intensive and time-consuming the creative process can be, that you consider the possibility that you might be taking on too much.

Chelsea: This is what I’m talking about. You always want to manage me.

Chloe: Okay. Well, what you consider a managing, I consider being a responsible partner.

Chelsea: You insist you know what’s best for me, what I can handle, like I’m some irresponsible child.

Chloe: So I’m not supposed to voice my concern?

Chelsea: It crosses a line. It’s controlling and patronizing. And I can’t take it anymore. When I insist I know my own limits, you throw the past in my face like I don’t have the emotional fortitude to do my job. It is insulting. That is what’s not working here, chloe — your attitude. So if you want out, by all means, be my guest.

Billy: Hey. You okay?

Chelsea: Not by a long shot.

[Acoustic soul music throughout]

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Hey.

Chelsea: Hey. You followed me.

Billy: You said you weren’t okay.

Chelsea: Oh, that’s — I’m — I’m fine. I just needed a minute.

Billy: Did something happen in society?

Chelsea: Yeah. Chloe. She’s really getting on my last nerve lately.

Billy: Is that why you hightailed it out of there?

Chelsea: I just needed some air. The truth is, with chloe, sometimes… forget it. You don’t want to hear all this?

Billy: I do. It’s okay.

Chelsea: We’ve just been disagreeing a lot. You know, this whole professional partnership has suddenly become very personal.

Billy: Yeah, that’s what happens when you work with someone that you care about. Lily and I disagree on things at times, as well.

Chelsea: I doubt you two fight the way chloe and I do.

Billy: We have our moments, but, yeah, we end up talking about it, and we — we find an understanding.

Chelsea: Well, it used to be that way with chloe, but lately, it’s like she’s constantly pushing my buttons.

Billy: As only the ones that know us best do.

Chelsea: Yeah, you’re right. You’re right. Maybe it’s me, you know? Maybe I’m projecting my stuff onto chloe. I mean, she’s the best friend I’ve ever had. I mean, she’s always been so amazing to me. Maybe — maybe — maybe she’s just having to deal with all my issues.

Billy: Well, I’ll give you points for insight, but promise me this — do not start a podcast, okay? Because it’s gonna be a real downer. Worst of all, it’s gonna be boring. And who wants to listen to that? Not me.

Chelsea: Is that what I said?

Billy: You said that exactly, I think.

Chelsea: Huh. Well, look at that. Actually got through to you.

Ashland: So this is who you are now. This is who you want to be. Your father would be so proud.

Victoria: You know, and it’s just so predictable that you would use my relationship with my father as a way to get me to second-guess myself. I repeat — the plan was mine.And the satisfaction of crushing you the way that you tried to crush me, that’s mine, too. Leaving you with nothing but what you had before you masqueraded your way into my life and tricked me into loving you. Oh, you know what? Actually, it’s even less because your company has been absorbed into newman enterprises. Your name and your presence are completely wiped from the building. And you are now what you always should have been — nothing. No one.

Ashland: I loved you with all my heart and soul.

Victoria: I could’ve predicted that you would say that, too, only now I know you have neither.

Victor: Well, thank you for the information. Right. If something changes, kindly give me a call. Bye.

Nikki: What time will the jet be landing in new york?

Victor: In a couple of hours.

Nick: Which means, by tonight, victoria will be home.

Adam: I was going to use the jet to take connor to pittsburgh to see the brewers play the pirates. So imagine my surprise to learn my request was bumped so victoria could use it, someone who is not an employee of this company and, last time I checked, didn’t want to be a part of this family. So does someone want to tell me what’s changed? Hey, it’s me…your skin.

Billy: I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. This — all of this right here — is rhinoceros skin. Nothing gets to me.

Chelsea: Ah, except for my comments on your podcast, which apparently you can quote verbatim.

Billy: That got to me.

Chelsea: You don’t have to listen to me. Don’t take it to heart.

Billy: Excuse me. I always listen to the truth.

Chelsea: Always?

Billy: Mostly.

Chelsea: That’s more like it.

Billy: All kidding aside, I — I took what you said to heart because I think, deep down, I knew you were right.

Chelsea: Mm. Just like, deep down, you were right about chloe knowing me well enough to get a rise out of me.

Billy: There we go. So what did we learn today?

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] Uh, I guess, on some level, what chloe said makes sense, and i just didn’t want to admit it. Maybe I’m not good at gauging my limitations. Perhaps I need to face reality.

Billy: Hmm. Look at us, huh? Being all mature. Who would have ever expected that?

Chelsea: No one, ever.

[ Chuckles ]

Sally: Is this seat taken?

Chloe: Hi. Uh, what are you doing back here?

Sally: Well, I forgot my card.

Chloe: Fair warning — I’m in a — I’m in a lousy mood.

Sally: Yeah, I just saw chelsea storm out of here.

Chloe: Right. That wasn’t upsetting or anything.

Sally: Look, the last thing i want to do is make things worse, so you can just tell me to shut up if I’m overstepping. But when we were chatting before, it was very obvious that things were strained in that relationship, work- and friend-wise. You just seemed like you could use someone to talk to. And…maybe an alternative.

Nikki: Can’t you and connor fly commercial?

Adam: I checked. All the flights, they’re booked. So poor kid is gonna be crushed, and now there’s nothing that I can do about it.

Victor: Son, victoria requested the use of the jet to bring her from new york to genoa city, okay?

Adam: I am aware of that.

Victor: Good.

Adam: If you’re not gonna give me the courtesy of speaking with me first, you could least tell me the purpose of her visit. Or is it more than just a visit?

Ashland: So what do you expect me to do?

Victoria: I gather that this hasn’t penetrated for you. Because you have come to see me as someone that you can still manipulate, someone who thinks they can’t live their life without you. Well, guess what. I’m looking forward to it. And as to what you should do? I don’t care. Disappear. We’re through. I don’t want to see you or hear from you ever again.

Nick: Sure. Why’d you want to meet?

Victor: Have you heard anything from victoria yet?

Nick: So, you want to know if vick has called since you, uh, used your influence to block investors from putting any money in her and ashland’s company?

Victor: That’s right. Have you?

Nick: Uh, no, but I know exactly how that conversation will go.

Victor: Oh, really?

Nick: Yes.

Victor: Ah.

Nick: It will involve lots of name-calling and unsavory language.

Nikki: Darling, you’re not certain that she thinks you were in on it.

Nick: Mom, it’s gonna be so easy for victoria to figure out what happened. She’s gonna know that dad blocked all of her business partners from investing any money. She’s gonna know that dad got all of his information from me because she trusted me and that’s gonna be completely gone.

Victor: Son, do I need to remind you that you volunteered that information? I didn’t ask you for it.

Nick: I know.

Nikki: I just worry this is gonna push her even further away. I have tried to call her many times, and she has not responded.

Victor: Well, this is conjecture on both of your parts, alright? Let’s wait and see how things work out.

Ashland: Hello.

Victoria: Hello.

Ashland: Ah.

Victoria: So, how did your search for a new office building go?

Ashland: Uh, well, a couple of possibilities in midtown, steel, glass monoliths, very impersonal, that kind of thing.

Victoria: Well, we can work with that. But you sound a little unenthusiastic about it.

Ashland: Uh, there’s this other option, this charming building in tribeca.

Victoria: Oh! I like the sound of that.

Ashland: Yeah, well, it could be perfect, actually. It was recently renovated by a media company who couldn’t get off the ground, so it’s state-of-the-art and we wouldn’t have to change much. And the best part is we could likely get it for below market value because they are very motivated to sell.

Victoria: Do you have any idea how handsome you are when you talk about buying commercial real estate at a bargain price?

Ashland: [ Laughs ] Well, their loss is our gain. Poor bastards. They had one of their investors pull out, so they lost most of their funding. Uh, but that’s not gonna happen to us. You know why? Because that’s the advantage to self-financing.

Victoria: That sounds so wonderful.

Ashland: Hey. Are you okay? Is everything alright?

Victoria: Sure. I’m fine.

Ashland: Well, you just seem a little off. Um…are you having second thoughts?

Sally: Chloe. What’s happening?

Chloe: Hey, sally. Well, nothing was happening until you showed up, and I mean that on five different levels.

Sally: I’d like to take that as a good thing.

Chloe: Oh, it’s great.

Sally: What are you doing?

Chloe: Oh, I’m just having a business meeting with my partner. Can’t you see?

Sally: Is chelsea late?

Chloe: Yeah, or possibly forgot the whole thing or just chose not to show up.

Sally: I see.

Chloe: Please, please sit down and join me.

Sally: Oh.

Chloe: Um, yeah, I just wanted to congratulate you on your new gig. Thank you. I mean, taking over as ceo at newman media — that is a big job. But I know you can do it.

Sally: Thanks, chloe. Coming from you, that means a lot.

Chloe: But, you know, I was a big surprised that you accepted the job offer, considering your love for fashion design.

Sally: Yeah, I initially had some mixed feelings about stepping away from something that I knew and loved, but it turns out to be the best professional decision that i ever made. Taking on this challenge, I have found a new calling.

Chloe: Good for you. Ah, sometimes I feel like i could use a new calling.

[ Sighs ]

Sally: What? I thought you and chelsea were killing it. Is your new line not going the way that you’d hoped?

Chelsea: Wow. You look like you belong in that chair.

Adam: I do belong in this chair. This is where the ceo of newman enterprises sits.

Chelsea: Of course. Can’t wait to see your portrait hanging up there.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] It’s not really my style. What can I do for you, chelsea?

Chelsea: I need you to sign this permission slip for connor’s camp. They’re taking a canoe trip up north.

Adam: You couldn’t sign it?

Chelsea: Apparently not. You’re the parent on record since you enrolled him. I can’t even deal with these camp people right now. They’re real sticklers.

Adam: Well, doesn’t it make you feel good that your child is in good, capable hands?

Chelsea: No. Right now it makes me feel annoyed.

[ Hand taps ]

Adam: Is everything okay, chelsea?

Chelsea: Everything’s fine. Just some challenges at work. Chloe’s become a real taskmaster.

Adam: Well, some people get passionate about their dream jobs.

Chelsea: You should know. Congratulations, by the way. I know what this job means to you. I hope it’s everything you want it to be and that you’re truly happy.

Chloe: We’re still adjusting to the new work environment, finding our own rhythm.

Sally: But you and chelsea have been partners before, in the same roles, with great success. So, what’s different this time?

Chloe: It’s hard to say.

Sally: Well, I’m not trying to drag you down. I just want to figure this out.

Chloe: Yeah, no, I appreciate it.

Sally: I mean, you and chelsea wanted to create a space where you could create that magic again. And it didn’t work out at newman media, so now lauren gave you that opportunity. It seems like it would be a dream situation.

Chloe: Yeah. Lauren is the best.

Sally: Yeah. She’ll support you 100%. As long as you’re not trying to sabotage someone she cares about, which I found out the hard way. But she’s an amazing boss. So…what’s going on?

Chloe: I agree. Lauren is great. That’s why this has just been so…

Sally: Frustrating?

Chloe: Yes.

Sally: Well, let’s get to the bottom of this. I’m a problem solver.

Chloe: Look, anytime you start a new venture, there are going to be different challenges.

Sally: You’re a good friend.

Chloe: What do you mean?

Sally: You’re covering. Because it’s clear to me and probably anybody else that’s talked to you over the last few months that your biggest challenge this time around… should be right here, your missing partner.

Chelsea: I’m fine. It’s just — it’s become a real struggle with chloe. I’m tired of being managed.

Adam: Well, I can relate to that.

Chelsea: I know you can. You’ve dealt with the ultimate micro-manager — victor newman. Well, chloe is getting to that level.

Adam: As bad as my father? Come on. That — that’s not possible.

Chelsea: I don’t know if chloe’s feeling pressure, you know, because lauren’s the one backing us. Or maybe she feels like she has something to prove because newman media got rid of the fashion division. But it’s not working.

Adam: Okay. Well, have you told her this?

Chelsea: I have. I’ve tried, and nothing changes. She’s obsessed with these deadlines. It’s all about efficiency and productivity. You know, I need creative spark. There’s no joy. It’s not fun.

Adam: Well, sometimes work isn’t fun.

Chelsea: With chloe, it’s always been fun.

Adam: Wasn’t there a time where she cut up some of your pieces backstage at a fashion show?

Chelsea: Yes.

Adam: Well, that sounds like a good time.

Chelsea: You don’t get it. That’s part of our chemistry.

Adam: Yeah. You have walked a fine line with her. Sometimes you’re bffs, partners in crime, and occasionally you are bitter rivals.

Chelsea: Mm. As opposed to all your pure, uncomplicated friendships?

Adam: Hey, we are not talking about me right now.

Chelsea: I see. Okay. So you’re allowed to put my life under a microscope, but I can’t comment on yours.

Adam: Look, I finally got my dream job. And it seems like you are on the verge of blowing up your career, so you’re the priority. Maybe I can help you repair the partnership with chloe.

Chelsea: I don’t know what else to do with her. I’ve told her not to worry. I told her the work will get done. It always does. But she’s acting like this is her first lap around the track. It’s been brutal.

Adam: Well, then maybe you’re just gonna have to suck it up and deal with it.

Chelsea: Not necessarily. I got another offer.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] From who?

Chelsea: Well, it’s not public knowledge yet, so keep this between us, but kyle and summer asked me to design for marchetti. Jabot is acquiring the label.

Adam: That’s — that’s a big deal.

Chelsea: I know. Angelina is retiring. Every designer on earth would kill to take over her position, and they picked me.

Adam: Congratulations.

Chelsea: Thank you. If I do the marchetti job, though, I have to do it on my own. Chloe doesn’t want to take it on. She thinks it’s too big of a deal, that we can’t handle it. But I just think it will help my creativity, you know? I mean, I’ve been scattered lately. This could really ground me. And I can handle it.

Adam: Chelsea, I have known you for a long time. And, honestly, I don’t think that you can.

Victoria: Second thoughts?

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: No, no, no. I’m just a little tired. I didn’t sleep very well last night. I guess it’s all the excitement from launching our own company.

Ashland: Mm.

Victoria: And now that you told me about this new building in tribeca, I’m even more excited. I love the idea of being downtown.

Ashland: And we’ll save millions not having to upgrade. You know, when I saw this place, I thought to myself, “hand of destiny.”

Victoria: Well, when do I get to see it?

Ashland: Oh, well, I’m actually having a face-to-face with the current owners later today, so…

Victoria: Oh, my gosh. Well, we have to make sure everything’s in place.

Ashland: Ah.

Victoria: I mean, if this opportunity is as good as you say it is, we need to move quickly. It won’t last long.

Ashland: You’re absolutely right.

Victoria: I hired an attorney to handle the articles of incorporation. We need to be official if we’re gonna make an offer on the place.

Ashland: Agreed.

Victoria: Uh, also — oh, gosh — in order to file the paperwork, we’re gonna need a name, and we haven’t even thought of anything yet.

Ashland: Okay, how about “anything but newman” incorporated?

Victoria: Ooh, catchy! But I think — honestly, I think we should leave our names out of it.

Ashland: I like “catchy.” How about catchy media?

Victoria: My goodness. I thought you would be better at this. Your previous corporation was named after a 3,000-year-old babylonian king.

Ashland: Excuse me. I had months to come up with that, not five minutes.

Victoria: Okay, fine. What was that phrase that you used about the building?

Ashland: “Save millions.”

Victoria: [ Laughs ] No. “Hand of destiny.”

Ashland: “Destiny.” Destiny media. I love that. And I love you.

Victoria: I love you. However, I will love you even more once we get this paperwork done.

Ashland: Well, what else is there to do?

Victoria: My lawyer opened up a corporate account. I’ve already put in my $250 million, but I think the full amount should be in there before you meet with the building seller.

Ashland: Yeah. Yeah. I think you’re right. That way they’ll be able to verify that we have sufficient funds.

Victoria: Yes. Okay. So, you should just make your contribution as soon as possible.

Ashland: Send me the information.

Victoria: Oh, my gosh.

[ Sighs ] You have no idea how badly I want this.

Ashland: Me too. This is all I’ve ever hoped for.

[ Breathes deeply ]

Nick: So, let me know if you hear from vick.

Victor: You do the same, okay?

Nick: I’m gonna get a refill.

Victor: So, my baby, i understand from michael baldwin that you’re trying to find some dirt on diane jenkins.

Nikki: That’s right.

Victor: Okay. Wish you’d have come to me first.

Nikki: So that you could have tried to talk me out of it?

Victor: No, that’s not what I’m talking about. I don’t want michael baldwin to split his focus. He’s been very helpful in throwing up roadblocks to victoria and ashland’s plan.

Nikki: Well, he hasn’t done anything to bring her back to us so far.

Victor: Well, sweetheart, be patient, okay? I know this will work out, sooner than anyone expects.

Sharon: Hey.

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: Any more news on victoria?

Nick: That is the question of the day. Um, I did hear from her just before the last time I talked to you.

Sharon: Oh. Well, that must be a relief. But why didn’t you mention it then? And why don’t you look happier that she’s gotten back in contact?

Nick: Well, it seems she has changed her mind. When I talked to her, she told me about her — thank you so much — her, uh, plans to have investors put some money into her and ashland’s new company.

Sharon: I didn’t know they were starting a new business together.

Nick: Me either. So, at that moment, instead of wanting to remain neutral and be supportive of my sister, all i wanted to do was do anything i could to get her away from that lying bastard.

Sharon: So, what did you do?

Nick: I, uh — I just went and told my dad everything she told me.

Sharon: Okay. And let me guess. He did everything he could to shut down victoria and ashland’s new venture.

Nick: He used his influence to make sure no investors went anywhere near ashland and victoria.

Sharon: Mm. But that’s what you wanted, isn’t it?

Nick: I don’t know. I don’t know if I did the right thing.

Sharon: Don’t beat yourself up about this. Victoria put you in a difficult position, which — why would she do that?

Ashland: Wow. This is really happening.

Victoria: I know. And not a moment too soon if this building is as perfect as you say that it is.

Ashland: I can’t wait for you to see it.

Victoria: So, my lawyer set up the account, so we’ll both have direct access to the funds so we can easily get this massive undertaking off the ground.

Ashland: I think funding the company ourselves was the right move, by the way. You were spot on with that. I mean, that gives us complete autonomy to do whatever we want, which is how I’ve always preferred to work, so…

Victoria: Well, the way that I look at it, the investors passing was just part of our new company’s destiny.

Ashland: I see what you did there. That was lovely. Well done.

[ Laughs ]

Victoria: So, I sent you the account information so that we can take the next step.

Ashland: Let me see. Got it.

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

Ashland: I’ll start the process.

Victoria: Alright. Once this transfer goes through, we will be a united force to be reckoned with. And we won’t have to answer to my father, my brothers, my mother. You know, at one point, each one of them has second-guessed me, but not anymore. We’re on our own, and I am gonna prove to them that I can call the shots without them hovering over me constantly. This is my statement of a lifetime.

[ Laughs ]

Chloe: Look, I — i appreciate you trying to help, but I can’t sit here and let you bash chelsea.

Sally: No, it’s — it’s not like that at all. I am in a really good place right now. And I have zero animosity towards chelsea. In fact, I would really like us all to be friends. But I saw you two arguing in here awhile back, and I was shocked.

Chloe: Friends argue. And so do business partners.

Sally: Yeah, but not like that. It was a blow-up, chloe, and i could tell that there was something major going on.

Chloe: You know, um… chelsea has been hit really hard by the death of rey rosales. They got really close this past year.

Sally: Even though she tried to poison him?

Chloe: There were some extenuating circumstances. Rey forgave her. And then he was gone. And since then, she’s just been scattered and contentious, and it’s — it’s just been really difficult.

Sally: You’re a good friend, giving her the benefit of the doubt. But I know the whole reason that you recruited me for the fashion platform was because chelsea was unavailable due to her struggles.

Chloe: She’d gotten past all of her issues.

Sally: Had she? Or was she just covering them up with you? Because she’s always treated me like I was a threat, and I don’t know if it’s because of our friendship or because of my involvement with adam…or both.

Chloe: Try seeing it from her point of her view. She gets herself together, she comes back to town hoping to pick where she left off —

Sally: And she feels like i took her place, even though she should have realized that she burned every possible bridge with adam.

Chloe: It’s just been tough on her, realizing that even though she was back to her old self, she — she still had to live with the consequences of what she did when she wasn’t in her right mind. And it’s just one of the reasons why rey meant so much to her. His forgiveness paved the way for all the others in town to give her a second chance. And then he dies. She’s — ah, she’s just been really emotional.

Sally: I get it. A loss like that can affect everything. It can put strain on any friendship, even one as close as yours. It’s not fair to you.

Chloe: I never said that.

Sally: Well, you didn’t have to. I’ve witnessed it. You have been the driving force behind this whole renewed collaboration with chelsea. I just don’t think chelsea appreciates what good a friend you’ve been. And the fact that your partnership is going through this difficult phase is not your fault. You’ve done everything right.

Chloe: All I know is that i am going to continue to support my best friend. She’s just going through a really hard time right now.

Sally: Yeah. I hope that’s all that it is… and that chelsea appreciates you. I know what it’s like to screw up a good thing. And I’ve made it hard on people around me. But I also know that it’s a losing proposition to try and fix someone. But maybe this is different. I really hope it all works out for you. And I wish you the best.

Adam: Chelsea, I know how hard you work. You are great at what you do. But this marchetti thing right now is too much. It’s like you’re latching onto something to fill a void.

Chelsea: No. I love creating beautiful things. Designing brings me joy. That’s where I should be spending my energy.

Adam: Yeah, but not if you’re using it as a crutch. Chelsea, I know what you’ve been through in the last year. When you came back to town, you were positive, you were looking forward, and now it seems like you’re backsliding.

Chelsea: That’s not true!

Adam: You’re getting caught up in petty grievances. You’re getting upset with connor’s camp people because they’re just trying to do their job.

Chelsea: Oh, come on! That’s a one-time frustration.

Adam: Is it? What about this argument with chloe? I mean, maybe she’s not trying to manage you. Maybe you are just not showing up how she is expecting you to.

Chelsea: Wow. Wow. I didn’t realize I was such a basket case. I’m so glad I stopped by to be criticized by mr. Perfect.

Adam: I am not saying that, okay? I’m not judging you, chelsea. I’m just telling you what I have noticed from the outside. Ever since rey died, you have not been yourself.

Chelsea: Yeah, adam, it’s been hard.

Adam: Which makes me wonder, why do you even want to take the marchetti job right now anyway? It’s like you’re trying to steady your personal life by taking on more work.

Chelsea: Like you’ve never done that?

Adam: Chelsea, I do it all the time, which is why I notice it when I see it. And it never works. You can’t avoid what is bothering you. Eventually, you have to deal with it. ‘Cause what you’re doing now is not sustainable.

Nikki: I’m starting to think it doesn’t matter how much michael’s attention is split because he’s gonna drag his feet finding any information on diane no matter what.

Victor: Sweetheart, you shouldn’t worry about any of this. You know you’re concerned enough as it is with victoria.

Nikki: Yes.

Victor: Okay.

Nikki: You’re right. I am. But I don’t understand how you can be so calm regarding victoria and ashland’s situation.

Ashland: I can’t even describe what this means to me. You had every reason to never trust me again, to abandon me, and yet here we are, about to renew our commitment to each other.

Victoria: It’s what we both want.

Ashland: It just wasn’t that long ago that I thought this was impossible. Listen, I know… I know you were thinking about leaving genoa city to liberate yourself from your parents, and you could have easily done that on your own, without me. But you chose to follow your heart. And I understand that you want to be cautious, and we will take this at whatever pace makes you feel comfortable. But I need you to know that this makes me so damn happy that we’re doing this together. And I will never, ever give you a reason to doubt me again.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: Mwah!

Victoria: It’s a — it’s a new beginning for us.

Ashland: [ Laughs ]

Victoria: We’re starting on a new journey.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: And, um, I love thinking about the possibilities, especially with this new building that you found. It’s the next step in our big adventure.

Ashland: We should celebrate tonight.

Victoria: Oh, yes. Let’s do that. Caviar, champagne, the works.

Ashland: I love the sound of that, but first — first let me go ahead and transfer, uh, my funds into our joint account — right? — Merging our fortunes to secure our future.

[Sfx: Stomach gurgling]

Adam: Hi.

Sally: Hi. What are you doing here?

Adam: Um, I came to see you.

Sally: In an official capacity or otherwise?

Adam: Um, a little bit of both.

Sally: Well, that’s my favorite. They’re beautiful!

Adam: Looks like someone has a secret admirer.

Sally: “Shine brightly, kick some ass, and know that I have your back. The best is yet to come. Love, adam.”

Nick: You know, I’ve been wondering the same thing — why would victoria confide in me? She told me some very sensitive things. I’m just starting to think that maybe it was a test of loyalty.

Sharon: Well, if it was, you failed.

[ Both laugh ]

Nick: Yeah. It could also just be some convoluted game vick’s playing with dad.

Sharon: You think she wanted you to go to victor with the information?

Nick: I don’t know. But it was my choice. Vick knows I’m not happy about this and I’ll do anything I can to make sure she doesn’t get in any deeper with ashland.

Sharon: And she knows that going to victor is the best way to do that.

Nick: See, I had a feeling dad would be up to something, and if that’s the case, then I’m an unwitting accomplice to one of their plans. I’m either dad or victoria’s pawn.

Sharon: Well, look at the bright side. This may be a way of getting victoria to come back. I know your dad installed adam as ceo to drive her so crazy that she would come home, and that didn’t seem to work. So maybe this will.

Nick: Well, my fear is, if vick does change her mind and comes back, then my involvement in this will undermine any of the goodwill I re-established before victoria left town.

Sharon: She’s still your sister, nick. It may take a little while before things get back to where they were, but she’ll come around.

Nick: Yeah, but I just don’t have much influence on the family dynamic these days because I don’t have any skin in the game.

Sharon: And we talked about this. That’s because you walked away from the company.

Nick: Yeah. I did that ’cause I didn’t like all the lies and manipulating. But like it or not, this is the arena that my family operates in. And if I was still involved in the company, then, you know, i could have more impact on things like this and it could turn out differently.

Sharon: Are you still second-guessing your decision to leave newman?

Nick: It’s hard not to. I know you don’t think I should jump back into the viper’s nest.

Sharon: No, I never said that. I only tried to encourage you to think carefully about what you really want.

Nick: It’s just getting harder and harder to watch from the sidelines as my family deals with all these power struggles.

Sharon: So, what are you going to do?

Nick: I don’t know. Right now, the only thing I care about is victoria and making sure she gets through this okay.

Victoria: I love it. I love the photos. I love the blueprints of the building. I want to see it in person. I think it’s the perfect location for destiny media.

Ashland: Then why don’t you come with me right now to see it?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I have to meet with the lawyer. Why don’t you arrange a walk-through with the management company and then we’ll meet back later and we’ll see the building together?

Ashland: Well, that’s very smart. We don’t want to appear too eager, but we should be ready to seize the inside track, assuming you agree with me after you’ve seen the place.

Victor: “Decisive” is our operative word.

[ Both laugh ]

Ashland: I’m the happiest man in the world right now.

Victoria: I’m the happiest woman.

Ashland: I’ll be back soon, hmm?

Victoria: [ Breathes deeply ] We’re eating and drinking foods and beverages

Victoria: [ Exhales sharply ]

Nikki: Victor, I know you are a master of playing things close to the vest, but something is going on. You are too calm. I mean, it’s almost as if you know your plan is already working.

Victor: I certainly hope it is, yeah.

Nikki: Has victoria given you any indication that your installing adam as ceo is going to push her to come back?

Victor: No, baby. I am telling you what I told nicholas. If I had heard something, i would have told you about it, okay?

Nikki: Well, I’ll say this. The longer that adam is sitting in that ceo perch, the more difficult it will be for victoria to reclaim her position.

Victor: Well, then victoria better hurry up, right?

Nikki: Are you really comfortable just yanking him out of the seat and putting her in? I mean, have you even thought that far ahead? Of course you have. I mean, this is precisely the kind of thing you sit around thinking about. So, can this plan work?

Sally: I love these. And the thoughtful card.

Adam: Well, I thought the sentiment rang true.

Sally: It did. We will always have each other’s back. And you used the l-word. That was nice.

Adam: I didn’t put too much pre-meditated thought into that note. It was very instinctual.

Sally: Well, you have excellent instincts.

Adam: Well, so do you. And that is something that, um, I want to tap into right now.

Sally: You want to tap into my instincts? Is that what you said?

Adam: That is right.

Sally: Okay. Just want to make sure we’re on the same page.

Adam: [ Chuckling ] Okay. Right now, I have to focus. Um…I have a problem. I’m saddled with a coo who has no interest in my vision, much less helping me realize it. I’ve come up with an idea that i think can impress the hell out of my father.

Sally: But you need to act on it quickly.

Adam: Exactly. ‘Cause every day that goes by, victoria’s closer to imploding her life and running back to daddy. So I need to move quick, and i need to show him that I’M…

Sally: Indispensable.

Adam: Exactly. Now, I’ve been focused a lot on the media division, obviously, but now that I know it’s in the very best of hands…

Sally: Oh. You mean…these hands?

Adam: [ Sighs ] You’re very distracting.

Sally: Right. Yes. Proceed.

Adam: There are a couple areas of the company, some direct-to-consumer areas that could be shored up. And I’ve done some research. There is a major retailer that is having trouble meeting their working capital in the southwest. I think we should move in and take over operations and replace their location with stores under our brand. What do you think?

Sally: I think it’s a solid idea, but…

Adam: But what?

Sally: It just sounds like an idea that victor would have. You told me to always be honest.

Adam: I did. I did. Um… I appreciate that.

Sally: If you want to make a splash, you might have to do something different. Victoria has already done the victor junior thing. It might have worked for her. But you need to be adam. Surprise your father and set the business world buzzing. Retail in the southwest is nice, but it’s something that you should do whenever your ceo job is a little bit more secure. I really don’t think it’s gonna have the impact that you’re looking for. You need to show them that you’re not a placeholder, that running this company is what you are meant to do. You’re the real deal. So shoot for the stars. And the moon. Hell, buy the moon. That would get people’s attention.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] You’re so sexy when you’re like this.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] (Becky) I started smoking when I was 16.

Adam: I was thinking — maybe, um, you could just be ceo of newman media and coo of newman enterprises because I’m never gonna get this kind of advice from nikki.

Sally: Well, I should hope not. But I think you’re stuck with her. But I have every confidence that you will come up with something spectacular to make people see newman in a whole new light. Speaking of coos… I have an idea… about who should be mine.

Adam: Really? Is it anyone I know?

Sally: Yes. Chloe.

Adam: [ Laughs ] Uh, I don’t think that’s going to work.

Sally: Why not?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Well, first of all, she’s tied up in the, uh — the fenmore deal.

Sally: Yeah, well, I just had a talk with her, and it seems like chelsea is getting on her nerves, so I think their partnership might be on its last leg.

Adam: I met with chelsea earlier, and I don’t disagree with you, but chloe has no relevant experience.

Sally: Yeah, but neither did I. It didn’t stop you from hiring me. Look, besides, chloe and i worked well together before. She gets the job done, she is an effective manager, and I think she would be great for the job. I would love to make some overtures to see if I can lure her over here.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Do you have any more objections?

Adam: Yeah, just one. She absolutely, completely hates me with every fiber of her being.

Chelsea: I’m late. I know. I had to drop off this permission slip thing for connor, and adam and I just started talking.

Chloe: Oh, yeah, yeah, no worries. Yeah, I got your messages keeping me updated. Oh. I’m sorry. That’s right. You never sent me any texts. I’ve just been sitting here waiting.

Chelsea: Well, after the way things went yesterday, can you blame me for not being super eager to over-communicate with you?

Chloe: Well, that’s all the more reason why you should have kept me updated — so the tension between us doesn’t get any worse.

Chelsea: Okay. Well, I’m here now. So let’s get to work.

Chloe: Okay. Actually…no. It was really inconsiderate of you, chelsea, and this is not the first time. I have had it. This isn’t working.

Victor: If I have to be very honest, I’m not sure if this plan will work because I don’t know what’s going on in victoria’s head.

Amanda: Well, hello. So, you run out of town, you leave us in the lurch for the chancellor-winters launch party, and then, worst of all, you don’t call, you don’t text.

Phyllis: I know. I’m the worst. Hi.

Amanda: Welcome home.

Phyllis: Aww, thank you. Thank you.

Amanda: So, when did you get back?

Phyllis: I don’t know. That depends. I mean, maybe too late or too soon.

Amanda: What do you mean?

Phyllis: Well, too late because I definitely ruined things with jack and too soon because maybe I shouldn’t have come back in the first place.

[ Chuckles ]

Diane: Enjoy your cookies, harrison, and don’t forget to thank mrs. Martinez.

Jack: How was your trip to the park?

Diane: Oh, we had a great time, and he ran around so much that he got really hungry.

Jack: That boy can always find a good excuse to have another dessert.

Diane: Yes, and I could not bring myself to say no. He is a growing boy.

Jack: Absolutely. You two seem to be really bonding.

Diane: Yes. You know, when I had kyle, i never — I never thought that i would spend so much of his life away from him. I just — I feel like I have all this leftover love to give, and I’m really lucky that I can give it to harrison. Family really does mean so much. Oh, speaking of, uh, we saw allie at the park with noah newman. The two of them seemed to really be hitting it off.

Jack: I am delighted to hear that. The more friends she has in town, the better the chances are she’ll stick around and put down roots. And nothing could make me happier than that.

Diane: And…?

Jack: And…?

Diane: And it wouldn’t have happened if it hadn’t been for me.

[ Chuckles ]

Jack: You’re not gonna let me forget that, are you?

Nate: I wouldn’t say no to one of those fruit tarts.

Devon: They don’t have those today. The hostess told me on the way in.

Devon: I don’t know. That’s frustrating, isn’t it?

Nate: Damn right it is.

Devon: Yeah. Get people all excited about something and then can’t deliver?

Nate: Borderline criminal.

Devon: Right? It’s like, uh — it’s like getting up onstage and promising 50 podcasts at the launch of a new company without double-checking to make sure that you have 50 podcasts produced and ready to release.

Nate: Okay, hold on. I spoke to our content team, and they told me we had 50 in the pipeline.

Devon: And do you know what the pipeline is? It consists of anything from projects that we’re interested in buying to shows that are in development to series that are being produced and ready to air. So, no, we don’t have 50 podcasts ready to go, and now we’re scrambling. Who do you think you are?

Phyllis: So, um, I did everything I could to take responsibility for my past deeds, right? I told jack that I was sorry for what I did. I told him that I was sorry that I allowed all my old insecurities and my past demons to take over.

Amanda: Wow. So you did exactly what I told you to do from the start.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm.

Amanda: How did he respond?

Phyllis: Oh, how’d he respond? He told me I was insincere. Yeah. That’s what he said. Even though I told him that i went to diane to offer her a truce.

Amanda: [ Scoffs ] No, you did not.

Phyllis: Yes, I did. I did that for my daughter because my daughter begged me to do it, even though it’s against every single fiber of my being to make nice with that bitch.

Amanda: Well, I am really proud of you, phyllis, for putting your daughter’s feelings first.

Phyllis: Of course. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. Nothing. That’s what us moms do, you know?

Amanda: Yeah. That mother/daughter bond is…

Phyllis: Right. I’m sorry. I’m going on and on about myself. What’s going on with you?

Devon: See, my job is to make sure you can do yours effectively, and I know that this whole coo position is different than anything you’ve done in the past. But I do urge you to get up to speed on how things run around here.

Nate: I’ve been working hard to do that. I’ve met with all the department heads, and I’ve been sitting in on planning meetings. But I jumped the gun on the announcement. And I meant what I said before. I’m sorry.

Devon: Well, hey, i appreciate you saying it again. And I’m mostly just busting your chops ’cause I do know there’s a learning curve to all this.

Nate: Thank you. That’s a relief.

Devon: Yeah. However, if you do have any crowd-pleasing podcast ideas, I would love to hear them. Hey.

Devon: Well, do you have a podcast idea?

Elena: It’s a little rough, but, yeah, I’ve been kicking something around in my head.

Nate: This is the first I’m hearing about this.

Elena: [ Clears throat ] So…a medical podcast. Proactive and preventative measures, patient advocacy, maybe segments about medical mysteries, where the patient presents their symptoms and they take the listener through the doctor’s attempts at finding a cure and finding a treatment.

Devon: That’s — I mean, that sounds like a great idea, a really great idea. I know a ton of people that would be interested in listening to something like that. What do you think?

Nate: Hmm. I don’t want to be a downer, but I don’t see how we can do it.

Kyle: Please have a seat. Thank you for meeting with us. We know how busy you are.

Chelsea: Please. You two are the ones in the middle of a seismic shift in regards to where and how you’re doing your business. Congratulations again on finalizing jabot’s acquisition of marchetti. I mean, everyone at fenmore’s is just buzzing about it.

Kyle: Wait. How — how could they know? We haven’t even gone public.

Chelsea: Oh, I mean, it’s fashion. You know, rumors and…

Summer: People in our business know what women are gonna be wearing six months from now. Why wouldn’t they know what’s going on in the boardrooms?

Chelsea: This is very true. Well, it is fabulous news. And I feel like something else is going on because you two keep making eyes at each other and lauren was insinuating something earlier. So, um, do tell — what else do you have up your sleeves? (Vo) at the tidy cats innovation lab.

Jack: Wait, how did you push kyle too far?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I asked him for help in finding me a job here. Well, I can’t rely on his financial support forever, and i wanted him to know that I fully intend to pay my own way.

Jack: So, you’re definitely putting down roots here. What about your life in L.A.?

Diane: Oh, there’s nothing i can’t walk away from there. And I really do want to pivot towards a career in public relations. So, I had this idea that maybe kyle could help me find something, but I regretted it as soon as the words left my mouth.

Jack: He was opposed to it?

Diane: Well, I… I think he was uncomfortable. I-I put him on the spot. I mean, he has enough to worry about, with taking over as ceo and moving a major international fashion house to the states, without having to deal with helping his mother find a job.

Jack: So, how did you leave things?

Diane: Well, I — i backpedaled. But then he said he would keep his ears open.

[ Sighs ] I’m just worried that I took one step forward and now I’ve taken five steps back. He didn’t mention any of this to you, did he?

Jack: No. And if he did, I wouldn’t share it with you. I cannot — i will not intervene, definitely not on your behalf.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Jack: Look, I supported kyle taking this job at marchetti because he needs to run something on his own. So I’m not about to tell him what to do.

Diane: Alright. It’s probably for the best because if you did, you would probably tell him to not even consider helping me.

Jack: This is between you and kyle.

Summer: I’m glad that you’re excited about marchetti’s move to jabot because we have a proposition for you. We would like to bring you in to design a new line for marchetti.

Chelsea: Wow. I-I wasn’t expecting that.

Summer: That’s not the reaction I was expecting. I thought that you would jump at this opportunity.

Chelsea: I-I-I love the opportunity. Um, it’s just I signed a contract to market my stuff exclusively at fenmore’s, so i don’t think I can.

Kyle: We already ran it by lauren. She said she doesn’t mind you working on both lines.

Chelsea: She’s agreed?

Summer: 100%. So, we would call the line “chelsea lawson for marchetti.”

Kyle: So we aren’t poaching you.

Summer: Think of it more as you’re spreading your talents across fenmore’S.

Chelsea: I love the sound of that. I mean, angelina — she is an icon. Those are huge stilettos to fill. When I heard she was retiring, you could have knocked me over with a feather.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ]

Summer: We think that you are the perfect person to lead marchetti into a new era. I love your work, the chances that you take. I want to see more.

Chelsea: Wow, I’m — I’m thrilled and honored that you would trust me to work for this legacy brand.

Kyle: Well, is that a yes? We want to go big with the news as soon as we can.

Chelsea: I really want to give you an answer, but I have to talk to chloe. You know, she is my partner. But as far as I’m concerned… start chilling the champagne.

[ Laughter ]

Amanda: Yes, so, I just got back from seeing naya.

Phyllis: Ah.

Amanda: She had a stroke. The doctors think that it’s because of her a-fib, um, but she has lost movement in half of her body. She can’t speak. And it’s — it’s been heartbreaking seeing her like this.

Phyllis: I am so sorry. I had no idea. I am so sorry. Can I do something?

Amanda: No, that’s — you see, that’s the thing. There’s nothing that anyone can do. I went there with every intention to stay for a while, but they said that she’s gonna be in the hospital for a week at least, and they’re only allowing one visitor. So, imani’s dad is there, so he — he stayed.

Phyllis: Okay. So, uh, what’s the prognosis? I mean…

Amanda: It’s too soon. It’s too soon to tell. But we’re lucky. We have in-home care. We have in-home rehab.

[ Sighs ] But this — this is just — it’s just gonna be such a long process. It’s gonna be months, not weeks. And now imani and I — we’re gonna have to juggle seeing my mother with all of the work at chancellor-winters, and I —

[ Sighs ]

Phyllis: I’m sorry. I mean, at least you got to see your mom.

Amanda: Yeah. You’re right.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Amanda: And I’m really happy that imani encouraged me to go first. She really — she does understand. I lost so much time with her, and every moment — it really — it matters, you know?

Phyllis: Yeah.

Amanda: But now I’m gonna have to prepare imani for seeing our mother in this condition, and — I don’t know — I think that there’s a part of her that’s scared, you know?

Phyllis: Yeah, sure, sure. I understand that. You have your hands full right now.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] Yeah.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m so sorry. You know, my problems are nothing in comparison. I’m sorry.

Amanda: Phyllis, it’s not a competition.

Phyllis: Well, I mean…

[ Both laugh ] No. It’s not. Of course. Listen, um, it’s all about you, okay? It’s all about you right now. Um, what do you need from me?

[ Chuckles ]

Amanda: I’m okay. Really.

Phyllis: Okay.

Amanda: Devon — he — he has been by my side. I just — I don’t know what i would do without him.

Phyllis: Yeah. That’s great. You’re so lucky. Really, you’re so lucky, having a supportive man by your side. Wow. I wish I understood something like that, you know? I wish I had done more to support that in my life, you know? Support us or him. I don’t know. What– whatever. I don’t know what I’m saying.

Amanda: I think you’re saying you love jack.

Amanda: What? That does not sound like the phyllis I know.

Phyllis: I would like to introduce you to the new and improved phyllis, the one that doesn’t live in a fantasy regarding jack and phyllis. I mean — [ Chuckles ] Yeah. Eh, we’re not meant for each other. Well, we’re definitely not meant for each other with diane jenkins living in town. I mean, can you believe this woman, that she’s coming to town and thinks that we all owe her something? She absolutely infuriates me.

Infuriates me.

Amanda: You’re gonna need to rein it in, phyllis.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Amanda: If you do anything out of revenge, jack is not going to like it. Okay, what you need to do right now — just keep the peace. Just like you said you were gonna do that for summer, right? Just do it for jack, too.

Phyllis: Okay, well, you weren’t in the room. You didn’t see his face. You didn’t hear what he said to me, okay? He made it abundantly clear that I can’t control my destructive tendencies. You know what he also said? He said that I’m only happy when I’m chasing happiness.

Amanda: Jack didn’t actually say that.

Phyllis: Yeah, he actually said that, verbatim. Yeah. It’s too late for us.

Amanda: Or maybe it’s too soon to say. Phyllis, you are gonna have to do the impossible. You’re gonna need to be patient. Because I don’t think that you can just take what jack said in a moment of hurt and let it determine the fate of your relationship. Just give it some time, and maybe you’ll — you’ll find your way back. You’ll recapture what you were so close to having again.

[ Laughter ]

Summer: Could you believe the look on chelsea’s face when i made her the offer?

Jack: Kyle. Summer. Come on in.

Diane: I really should go and get out of your way, let you get to work.

Kyle: Wait, wait, wait. I’m — I’m glad we ran into you.

Summer: No time like the present.

Diane: Is everything alright?

Kyle: Well, I talked to summer about your job request.

Diane: Kyle, I — I — I know you have a lot on your plate, and I really don’t want to add to it.

Kyle: Summer and I discussed it, and we would like to offer you a job in the P.R. Department of the new marchetti.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

Kyle: What’s that look about?

Diane: I-I was just telling your father that I really regretted asking, that I know it wasn’t fair of me.

Kyle: I probably should have given you a heads-up on this.

Jack: You are the ceo of marchetti. You needn’t run your hiring decisions by me — unless you’re bringing her on as coo.

Diane: Well, I certainly hope not.

Kyle: Well, we want to set you up for success, so we’re gonna start you out slow.

Summer: The reason why this position is opening up is that not everyone is coming over from italy.

Kyle: And I know you know italian from your time in milan. So you could be a real asset for those employees who are relocating.

Summer: We should warn you, though, this isn’t a high-level job. We want to make sure that you get your footing.

Diane: And that I don’t mess up. I get it, and I’m grateful. I — I won’t let you down. I promise. Thank you. Thank you. And, summer, it’s — it’s not lost on me that this isn’t just coming from my son. I — I really appreciate your willingness to give me this opportunity. You know, before you two came in, I was just telling jack what an incredible day it’s been. I’ve spent time with harrison and then phyllis extended that olive branch and I didn’t think it could get any better. But it did.

Elena: What’s wrong with my podcast idea?

Nate: Nothing at all. But you’re the face of askmdnow, under contract with newman media.

Elena: Which, yes, certainly it’s an obstacle, but it’s not insurmountable. That’s actually the reason why I’ve been thinking about this so much. Things at newman media have been so hectic, they keep taking askmdnow on and off of hiatus. And a podcast is a much more efficient way of reaching people these days. I also thought of another segment for caregivers, where the friends and family members of patients could ask questions about their diagnosis, about how to talk to doctors, about how to navigate the healthcare system.

Devon: It’s a no-brainer idea for me.

Nate: What about her contract?

Devon: Well, I mean, I — I live with a pretty great lawyer who’s our chief counsel, so she can take care of her contract, I’m sure, when she’s back from visiting with her mom. If not her, imani can do it.

Nate: Obstacles removed, with the exception of one. Are you sure you have the time to commit to this?

Chloe: Okay, bye. I am sorry I am so late. I — I was dealing with ironing out some last-minute production snafus.

Chelsea: Mm, anything I can help with?

Chloe: No. Crisis averted, thanks to my masterful managing and coddling of egos.

Chelsea: Well, that’s wonderful news because you are about to be faced with a new set of exciting challenges.

Chloe: Why do I feel like you’re just sugarcoating telling me about some other fires that i need to put out?

Chelsea: No fires. No fires. We have just been given a remarkable opportunity. It’s gonna make you want to cheer for joy. But try to keep it down to a low roar, and only dance on the tables for a couple seconds.

Chloe: Okay. Uh, out with it.

Chelsea: Now that the brand is going to be sold at fenmore’s, I have been asked to design for marchetti. Isn’t that incredible?

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: Um, maybe you didn’t hear what I just said?

Chloe: Oh, I heard you. Marchetti. Interesting offer.

Chelsea: Um, then why am i getting the impression that you don’t think this is an amazing opportunity?

Chloe: Well, because it is my job to be honest and deal with the harsh realities of this industry, and it is your job to be creative and, oh, so fabulous. That was the point that gloria made, right?

Chelsea: You’re oversimplifying and undercutting my business judgment yet again?

Chloe: No, I’m just trying to be realistic about how time-consuming this would be.

Chelsea: I can handle it.

Chloe: Not to mention all of the work that you already have to do on your own brand. You are spreading yourself way too thin.

Chelsea: I know what I am capable of better than anyone. What I don’t understand is why you would disapprove of this when lauren, your very own sister-in-law, supports it. This would be an amazing opportunity for everyone involved.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Diane: It means so much that I’ll be working for my son and daughter-in-law my first job back to town. And I won’t let you down. I promise I’ll prove my worth… after we all celebrate. Can I please invite you out?

Summer: Why not? We haven’t had a chance to raise a glass to all of the great things that have been happening lately.

Jack: You know what? You have a good time. I’ll hang out with harrison.

Diane: Oh, he’s busy with mrs. Martinez.

Summer: Come with us, jack.

Diane: Yes. Don’t you want to raise a toast to kyle’s new adventures as ceo of marchetti?

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: Who am I to get in the way of a celebration? Let’s go.

Kyle: Yes, that’s right.

Diane: Let’s go!

[ Laughter ]

Devon: Well, I’m not gonna get in the middle of this, so…

[ Cellphone ringing ] Actually…you know what? You guys can discuss whether or not you have time to take on a podcast, and I’m gonna take this call. Excuse me. Hello.

Elena: Okay. When you asked if I have time to commit to this, you were really asking if our relationship does.

Nate: Does it?

Elena: We’ve both been so busy lately. And I barely see you. I miss you.

Nate: I miss you, too.

Elena: And I know I haven’t been very good at hiding my feelings about you leaving medicine and going into the business world. And with your new position, you can’t really get away much, like coming with me to my medical convention. But that’s why I thought, if i do this podcast, I’d be joining you on your adventure. I mean, I’d even be willing to take a step back from the clinic.

Nate: Wow. This is everything I wanted.

Elena: Good. Because I love the idea of being a part of this family venture and being able to support you in your new role. And if that means us spending more time together, then that’s a bonus for both of us.

Devon: Hey. So, do we have a verdict?

Elena: Yeah, well, I just have to tell you that… I am very excited to be a part of the team.

Devon: Yeah?

Elena: And I expect my chancellor-winters t-shirt.

Devon: [ Laughs ] Nice! Well, welcome aboard.

[ Chuckles ]

Amanda: You know, you can keep rushing around the hotel, dealing with these nonexistent emergencies, but I think that’s also called avoidance.

Phyllis: No, I’m not avoiding anything.

Amanda: Mm. Mm.

Phyllis: Mm. And here’s your sister. Sisters take precedence over friends, so… congratulations on the launch.

Imani: Oh, thank you so much. I wish you could have made it to the party.

Phyllis: Yeah, me too. Me too. By the way, I’m very sorry to hear about your mother.

Imani: Thank you.

Amanda: Thank you, phyllis. We’ll talk soon.

Phyllis: Alright.

Amanda: So, speaking of naya…

Imani: [ Sighs ] I am so glad that you could go see her. Thank you for keeping me updated and looping me in on the calls with her doctors.

Amanda: I was so happy to do it.

Imani: It’s times like these I’m glad I’m not an only child anymore.

Amanda: Well, your dad has been greatkeep, g me up to speed with everything.

Imani: Um…what was it like seeing mom in the hospital like that? This is the sound of nature breathing.

Amanda: I have to admit, seeing our mother in that hospital bed with all of the machines hooked up to her and her being so still, it almost broke me.

Imani: [ Sighs ] But she was happy to see you.

Amanda: It was a little hard to tell because she’s not communicating right now. But she is getting great care, okay? And your dad is taking such good care of her. He’s attending to everything that she needs. She’s really lucky to have you guys.

Imani: I haven’t done a thing.

Amanda: Come on. Imani, you doubled up on work so that I could go, I can be the first to see her.

Imani: No, I mean I haven’t done anything for mom.

Amanda: Well, now I am gonna take care of work so that you can go and be there with her in the hospital, okay?

[ Sighs ] Listen, you know how she is, right? She is probably more worried about you than she is about herself. She is not gonna feel whole unless she knows that you’re okay. I’m sorry. I’m sorry if I frightened you, okay? She’s —

Imani: Why would I be scared? Hmm?

Amanda: Because the strongest woman that you know, the woman who raised you — she just had a stroke and she’s confined to a hospital bed and you are remembering how much you love her and you’re worried that you’re not gonna be able to spend as much time with her as you wanted to.

[ Voice breaking ] And I’m sorry I can’t give you the answers that you want.

Imani: Were you afraid to see her?

Amanda: Of course I was. You know, I’m not gonna lie. It was difficult walking in there. But I’m so happy that I did. Seeing her in person — it made me feel so much better. I got to see how stable she was. I got to see her excellent medical team in action. You have to go. You have to go and you have to see our mother. And not just for her, but you need to do it for yourself because, imani, if, god forbid, something happens and you don’t get a chance to talk to her, I don’t think that you’re ever gonna forgive yourself.

Chelsea: I am tired of you looking for problems where they don’t exist. It’s like your first instinct is always to say no. Creativity requires you to say yes.

Chloe: I am a realist with a proven track record. And your creations are not made by forest animals and elves. The hard work, my work, starts when you finish a sketch. Yes, I may not be daydreaming designs, but I do know what it takes to make the sausage. And the ugly reality is that saying no is saying “yes,” yes to making sure that our existing obligations are fulfilled and that our line succeeds. Why would you turn down the chance to have more visibility, to really be able to make an impact?

Chloe: It is only a good impact if the work is done and the clothes are made.

Chelsea: Why do you always do this?

Chloe: What am I doing?

Chelsea: You’re managing me, handling me, keeping me quiet in a tiny little box because everyone knows I don’t know what’s good for me.

Chloe: That’s not what I’m doing.

Chelsea: Yeah, you know, every time we disagree, you go into babysitting mode. It has got to stop…now!

Summer: I am very excited to sit down with chelsea to map out our vision for marchetti.

Jack: You definitely have her locked in?

Kyle: We made an offer.

Summer: She just needs to discuss it with chloe.

Kyle: You know, I was thinking, when we were talking about P.R. As reinvention, we’re building on a well-known italian luxury brand. And we want to make it accessible to our U.S. Market.

Summer: Which our partnership with fenmore’s allows us to do that.

Kyle: Well, and with summer’s creative genius…

Summer: And kyle’s business acumen, we really can’t fail.

Jack: The numbers don’t lie. It promises to be a profitable venture.

Diane: And I couldn’t be happier to be part of such a talented team.

Summer: Cheers.

Kyle: Cheers.

Summer: [ Laughs ]

Diane: Cheers. There’s an invisible threat in your backyard

Nate: Just the person i wanted to see.

Imani: Oh, as a matter of fact, I wanted to talk to you, too. But you first.

Nate: How long would it take to get elena out of her contract with newman media?

Imani: Uh, why would I want to do that?

Nate: I want to do a deal with her so that she can host a medical podcast for us.

Imani: Um, I thought I heard something about her heading out of town.

Nate: She is, for a conference in hawaii. That’s why I want to speed this along. I want her free of any newman obligations so she can sign contracts as soon as she gets back.

Imani: Hmm. I’m not sure. You know, we have so many other things on our plate, and our team is already pretty swamped.

Nate: Mm. That’s why it’s so good to have friends in high places.

Imani: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: Look, I need some help with this. Personal favor. And like you said, we should do for each other.

Imani: It’s just —

Nate: Truth is, devon’s been giving me a hard time about jumping the gun on the podcast announcement at the launch party, and elena’s idea might help me redeem myself.

Imani: [ Chuckles ] Okay, for you, I’ll find a way.

Nate: Thank you.

Imani: Mm.

Nate: By the time she gets back from hawaii, right?

Imani: Uh, how long exactly will she be out of town?

Chloe: Here I am, just trying to look out for my best friend, and all you can do is call me a micro-manager.

Chelsea: I am the creative engine, and you — you are the brake that keeps us from moving forward.

Chloe: Oh, yeah, you know what? Maybe I am the brake. And guess what. It keeps you from crashing and burning.

Chelsea: Really?

Chloe: And you know what? You are right about one thing. This has to stop because I am not going to sit here and allow you to insult and disparage me for trying to keep our business on time, on budget, and on track. Some people find value in that.

[ Cellphone alarm sounds ]

Chelsea: Oh, you know what? You should get that. You should get that. It may be another one of my fires you need to put out.

Chloe: No, I have to go get bella — or, as you like to call it, micro-manage my daughter. Sorry, but we’re gonna have to fight about this later.

Summer: Hi, mom.

Kyle: Grab a seat.

Phyllis: [ Clears throat ] Yeah, nothing. So, what’s going on here?

Diane: Oh, we’re having a family celebration to toast the fact that summer and kyle have hired me at marchetti. Would you care to join us, now that we’ve declared a truce?

Phyllis: Well, I’m here to see abby to thank her for taking care of the launch party.

Jack: Yeah, we haven’t seen her.

Summer: Actually, I’m glad that I ran into you because i wanted to talk to you about going over some ideas for hosting fashion shows at the grand phoenix.

Diane: Oh, thinking ahead.

Summer: If you’ll excuse us.

Kyle: Of course.

Diane: Wow. I’m impressed. A week ago, I would have expected phyllis to pour that champagne over my head. Maybe we can co-exist.

Jack: [ Inhales deeply ]

Summer: Mom?

Phyllis: I’m okay.

Summer: No, you’re not.

Phyllis: Yeah, I’m fine, summer. I’m fine. You know what? I want to ask you a question. The job you offered me at marchetti — is that the same one that diane’s doing?

Summer: Mom, no, not even close. I wanted you to be my head of marketing. What we offered diane is a junior-level P.R. Gig. Look, it was kyle’s idea, and i only agreed to it because I’m here to support kyle, just like you are here to support me, right?

Phyllis: Yeah. Right. I will support you. I will support you because i love you. Yeah.

Summer: I love you, too.

[ Laughter ]

Diane: Yeah, that was a good one.

Chelsea: I’m glad I ran into you. I wanted to thank you for the kindness you showed me when we ran into each other in the park. I don’t know if you could tell, but I was kind of having a moment.

Billy: It’s okay. We all have them. You feeling better today?

Chelsea: I am. Thank you. You know, life just keeps rolling along.

Billy: Yeah. That it does.

Chelsea: Speaking of pondering life, I wanted to let you know that I finally got a chance to listen to your podcast.

Billy: Oh, great. Did you enjoy it?

Chelsea: Actually, no, I didn’T…at all.

Michael: Thank you for your help with the situation in new york. That was much appreciated. And, yes, I will set up that meeting with victor newman in return. A deal’s a deal. I don’t go back on my promises. Yeah. Alright. Bye.

Lauren: What was that about?

Michael: Oh, just business stuff.

Lauren: Yes. I could tell. You had your slick voice on, which usually means you’re doing something squirrelly for victor.

Michael: Well, that’s quite the assumption.

Lauren: Hmm. But correct, no?

[ Cellphone thuds ]

Sally: I am not sure how I’m supposed to refer to you now. Your honor? Your royal highness?

Adam: I think those things are reserved for judges and kings.

Sally: How about newman media’s secret weapon?

Adam: Ooh. That’s — that’s not bad.

Sally: Well, that last one was a quote from another glowing story about the press conference. “It was a bold and confident performance by adam newman, who seems poised and ready to take newman enterprises into the future. He might just be the company’s secret weapon.”

Adam: It’s very nice to hear.

Sally: Is it? What’s wrong?

Adam: I don’t know. Everything went…well.

Sally: That’S…good.

Adam: Yeah, unless it went too well.

Sally: There is no such thing.

Adam: Look, I am confident. I am ready to whip this place into shape, but I just can’t help get the feeling that, um, there might be another shoe ready to drop.

Nick: Alright, what is it that couldn’t wait or be sent by text?

Victor: Hi, son. I just didn’t mean to alarm you, okay? I just wanted you to know that everything is in good hands… although ashland and victoria may not think so.

Nick: What does that mean, dad? What’d you do?

Victor: What did I do? What’d your father do? He’s thinking ahead. Whatever venture ashland and victoria are about to embark on, it’s gonna hit a brick wall.

Chelsea: Uh, maybe that’s not such a good idea. I’m sorry I said anything.

Billy: No, but you’re not because you wouldn’t have said something. Clearly, you want me to know. So, please tell me. What is about my inner thoughts, about my dreams that is so awful for you?

Michael: I do not use a different voice when I conduct business for victor.

[ Deep voice ] I’m always slick, baby.

Lauren: Oh. You think so, huh?

[ Deep voice ] “I’m calling on behalf of victor newman. This is what we want. Get it done.”

Michael: No. The voice was wrong, but the words were right. Look, I’m doing my job. And I’m doing it damn well, by the way.

Lauren: Oh, I never said anything about the way you’re doing your job. It’s the nature of your job that I have an issue with.

Michael: And like I said, there is nothing criminal going on. And there’s no longer any danger of me landing in some foreign prison again.

Lauren: Oh, so you say. You’re working for victor newman, so never say never.

Michael: You know what? I think it’s time for another quick trip away. Maybe a romantic weekend?

Lauren: I wouldn’t hate that idea.

Michael: We could hop a plane to somewhere tropical. We could spend a few nights in a luxurious hotel. We could lie by the pool

Lauren: It’s very tempting. It really is. It’s just there’s so many big things going on for jabot and fenmore’S…

Michael: Yeah, yeah, okay.

Lauren: …And I just need to be here.

Michael: I get it. We have to hold off on it, but, you know, not for too long. That trip to france was so amazing.

Lauren: Mm.

Michael: I can’t wait to get away again, just the two of us, with no distractions.

Lauren: I look forward to that.

Michael: You know, maybe we don’t have to wait for another vacation to find… time for romance. Do you have any free time now? We could have lunch… back at our place… maybe in the bedroom.

Victoria: You share your bad news first.

Ashland: Okay. Well, turns out we weren’t able to poach that media marketing genius we had at newman.

Victoria: Dan said no?

Ashland: Yeah. He, uh, doesn’t want to jump ship for a new company. He likes the security.

Victoria: A long-standing, successful conglomerate as opposed to a start-up.

[ Sighs ] I suppose that makes sense.

Ashland: Well, I gave him all the reasons I could for him to join us — a change of pace, exciting new challenges. He just didn’t bite.

Victoria: Well, that’s disappointing, but I understand his concern. Dan may have made the best call for himself, though, because our company may have already hit its first roadblock.

Ashland: Your bad news. You heard from the investors.

Victoria: Yeah. Unfortunately, they’ve turned us down.

Ashland: Wait. Wait. All of them?

Victoria: The entire list.

Ashland: No. Come on. It’s hard for me to believe that every single one of them said no. I mean, what are the odds of that? No, something’s not right here.

Victor: I approached the investors who were about to invest in whatever project victoria and ashland want to start. I told them not to invest a dime in it.

Nick: I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by that.

Victor: No, you shouldn’T. You know your dad always thinks a move ahead, right? I also asked michael baldwin to inform some potential future investors and warn them not to invest in any project that has ashland locke’s name attached to it.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] I mean…that’s pretty cut-throat.

Victor: I don’t play games. You know that. I had no other choice.

Nick: I don’t know about that.

Victor: What do you mean?

Nick: I’ve been thinking.

Victor: Oh?

Nick: What if this is a test from victoria? You know, to see if I would tell you what she was planning so she could find out if we actually believed in her for once or if we were undermining her yet again. Because if that’s the case, she got her answer, dad. You shut down her project before it even had a chance to get started. And I will have failed her final loyalty test.

Victor: Well… there’s that.

Frank is a fan of fast.

He’s a fast talker.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Michael: We still got it.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Baby, we never lost it.

Michael: Ooh. We haven’t played hooky like this in a long time.

Lauren: I know. Feels a little naughty, hmm?

[ Both laugh ]

Michael: It does.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: I am gonna respect the fact that you’re on a tight schedule. I’m not gonna derail your day.

Lauren: Mmm. Aww. Don’t rush. Don’t rush. We have time. We’re here. Let’s make the most of it.

Michael: You want to get your money’s worth for this room, don’t you?

Lauren: Well, I am an excellent businesswoman.

[ Laughs ] Let’s take our time.

Michael: What the lady wants, the lady gets.

Sally: I wouldn’t worry about another shoe dropping. You have to remember where you are now — on top of the world. You can handle any crisis that pops up.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, I’m not concerned about things regarding the company itself, but when it comes to the man who built this company, I have to be on my toes. Victoria could call him and say that she made a terrible mistake. She could say she wanted to come home, provided she could get her job back. My father would kick me to the curb as fast as possible because that’s been his plan all along.

Sally: I’m not discounting what you’re saying, but I don’t envision that happening. Victoria made such a bold statement in walking away, i can’t see her just doing a 180 and rushing back home. If she really loves ashland the way that we think she does, despite everything that he’s done to her, why would she throw all that away and come back just to spite you? It doesn’t make any emotional sense.

Adam: I agree. But, uh, my sister is much more complicated than you know.

Victoria: You know, I’m as surprised about the investors’ reactions as you are. I thought that our business plan was solid and our — our proposal was strong.

Ashland: And both you and i come to the table with a proven track record.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Well, not proven enough, apparently.

Ashland: What reasons did the investors give you for turning us down, hmm?

Victoria: They were vague. I mean, some talked about other investments taking priority, and some said that they just had prior commitments.

Ashland: No, no, there’s something off here. If they had prior commitments, they would not have come to meet with us in the first place. Is it possible that someone found out what we’re trying to do here and reached out to dissuade the investors?

Victoria: I know what you’re thinking.

Ashland: Who else? This is exactly kind of move your father would make.

Victor: Now, son, I know that you were reluctant to share this information with me. But trust me — this time, you made the right decision.

Nick: I’ve heard those words before, dad, and I’ve lived to regret it.

Victor: You won’t this time.

Nick: Do I even want to know what you’ve done to make sure people don’t invest in victoria and ashland’s company?

Victor: I’ve let people know that ashland locke suffered from small cell lung carcinoma. Very problematic cancer to deal with, okay?

Nick: So, you told them he’s dying.

Victor: Yeah. In essence, yes.

Nick: But he’s not dying.

Victor: Well, he told the world he has cancer, you know, an especially difficult form of it. So, who is gonna invest in a company led by a man who’s about to die?

Nick: I mean, it’s pretty clever.

Victor: Well, the beauty of it is that michael baldwin and i have not said anything that isn’t true. Only ashland locke has. Told a lie. Coming back to bite him.

Nick: I’m guessing you’re walking a fine line.

Victor: Your father’s often walked a fine line, okay? Let me ask you, son. You’ve always complained about the fact that I never brought you into the loop. Now I have. Aren’t you happy about that?

Nick: No, I, uh — i appreciate you bringing me in. I do, especially when it comes to matters of the family. I’m just… I’m feeling guilty. Victoria’s gonna know I betrayed her. And I am nervous about the blowback when this all hits the fan.

Victor: I’m not, son. We have to do everything to save your sister and to save this company. And I’ll do whatever it takes to do so! Can dove stop 98%

Sally: Again, I don’t want to insult you.

Billy: Mm.

Sally: But if you want me to be honest with you about your podcast, I will be.

Billy: Please. Go ahead.

Chelsea: Okay, so, here’s the thing. I feel like the first few episodes are too mired in self-recrimination and pain from the past.

Billy: Well, um, I try to make my audience feel seen, to make the whole process feel cathartic.

Chelsea: Right. Well, I can only speak for myself. I just found it difficult to continually listen to all that darkness, you know? I want to laugh. I want to listen to something that is uplifting and entertaining. I mean, I understand the whole adage of “misery loves company” —

Billy: So, my podcast made you feel miserable.

Chelsea: [ Stammers ] I just feel like what people really need right now is to be lifted up, you know? They need to hear you saying things like, “we’re all gonna get through this,” and, “let’s all try to enjoy life for a little while.”

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: You know, for me, i had a really hard year. It was emotionally draining, you know? I need to be pulled up out of that darkness, maybe in some fun, crazy way.

Billy: And my podcast does the opposite.

Chelsea: I just feel like you are, when you want to be, one of the funniest people I know. And when I listened to that podcast, I just felt like I was missing out on all of the levity, you know, all of the humor. It’s just my two cents. But maybe try reminding the folks out there that life should be joyous and not reminding them that the world is a crazy place right now because guess what, billy. We already know.

Billy: Yeah. No. Um… wow, chels, you make it sound like I don’t have any joy, like I don’t enjoy life whatsoever, and I do. I’m not walking around in some dark cloud 24 hours a day, okay? That’s just not true.

Chelsea: Okay. I feel like you’re getting a little defensive, which is a sign to me that maybe deep down you know I’m right.

Billy: Mm. I can see where you’re coming from.

Chelsea: Well, thanks for hearing me out.

Billy: I guess I’ve just forgotten how well you used to know me.

[ Both laugh ]

Lauren: Whoo!

Michael: Yes!

Lauren: We should do that more often.

Michael: [ Sighs ] You don’t have to ask me twice.

Lauren: Aw, I hate to break this off, but I’ve got to go back to work.

Michael: Oh, fine. Fine.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: Our stolen moments upstairs will tide me over till tonight.

[ Sighs ] In the meantime, I have a few more phone calls to make…

[Deep voice] In my slick voice.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] I’ll see you tonight, tiger.

Michael: Mm.

Sally: Victoria must be a complicated woman because why else would she be involved with a man like ashland, not once, but twice?

Adam: Well, my sister’s issues go far beyond locke. Her need for power and dad’s approval may just prove to be stronger than her love for ashland. So, we can’t write her off just yet. She might change her mind and come back.

Sally: I have to say i disagree. You may know your sister, but i am better on love.

Adam: I hope you are right.

Sally: But in the meantime, you should just enjoy your time in the big chair.

Adam: Okay. [ Clears throat ] Okay, I will try. ‘Cause it would really suck to get deposed from the throne before I had a chance to prove myself.

Sally: You are going to prove that you’re the best person for this job. And I can’t wait to watch you do it.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You know, I’m sad to say it, but your theory sounds all too possible. My father — he has always amazed me with his ability to find out the most private things about people and everything. I mean, it’s like his superpower. And his connections and his reach are wider than anyone could ever imagine.

Ashland: And he used them to prevent his own daughter from raising capital to start a new company?

Victoria: Well, I’m sure he justified it by telling himself that I turned my back on the family and he just couldn’t stand for that. Leave it to him to ensure that i wouldn’t be able to make a clean break.

Ashland: It is infuriating and insulting that your family will not let you just live your own life. I mean, I don’t know how you put upwith their interference for as long as you did.

Victoria: It took you coming into my life to make me finally see that and to want to push back.

Ashland: Okay, well, we’re not gonna take this lying down, okay? The first thing we have to do is figure out how victor found out what we’re doing here. Did you say anything to anyone, even by accident? Maybe just mentioned to somebody that we were going to new york city?

Victoria: No.

Ashland: To nikki or billy?

Victoria: No. I haven’t said anything to anyone, not even billy yet. I’m still so frustrated and angry with them. I mean, I need some time and some space to just calm down before I can even speak to them again.

Ashland: Hey, look, um, i know — I know how much this hurts you, even more than you’re letting on. But I have to ask this question — are you sure you really want to do this? Are you able to start a whole new life with me and leave your family behind? I’m jonathan lawson

Billy: Well, that wasn’t exactly easy to hear, but i appreciate your candor. And, yeah, maybe you’re right. Maybe my podcast could use a little lightness, maybe even a few jokes.

Chelsea: The world will thank you, and so will I.

Lily: Hello.

Chelsea: Hi!

Billy: Hey there. Chelsea was just giving me a not-so-glowing review about the podcast.

Chelsea: I didn’t want to offend you, but you asked me my opinion. I’m gonna give you an honest answer.

Billy: I’m not sure I asked. Kind of just gave it to me.

Lily: Well, let me guess. Was the gist that the podcast needs a little more levity and less misery?

Billy: Misery? I’m miserable now?

Lily: [ Laughs ] No. I just figure that if someone’s gonna give you criticism, it would be that the podcast is a little, you know…dour.

Billy: Oh, wow.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Billy: Ah.

Lily: No, I mean, look, i think that you’ve done a great job with it and I know that you’re going through a lot and i think this was kind of your way of, you know, working through it all, so…

Billy: Well, it wasn’t really about me working through things. I mean, not exactly. It was about connecting with people that may be going through similar things. It wasn’t, like, a comedy podcast.

Lily: No. I understand. I agree with chelsea that maybe the medicine needs to go down with a little bit of sugar, you know?&

Chelsea: I was telling billy he’s, like, one of the funniest guys I know. You know, you want to hang out with him at a party because he’ll make you laugh and you’ll learn a few things.

Billy: That’s who I thought i was being. I thought I was that guy. Clearly, I’m a little stuck in my head. So, if, uh, two smart, savvy women are telling me so [Sighs] Then I better listen.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Nick: Dad, you saw how adamant victoria was about having her independence. And I’m afraid that your next move or the ones you’ve already done are just gonna set her off even more. I’ve tried many times to reach out to her. She’s not answering any calls or texts

Victor: Well, there’s nothing more for you to do right now, okay? Just sit back and give your sister some time.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Look, I know you’re hoping that putting adam in the ceo seat will force victoria to come home and retake the reins of the company, but when I talked to victoria, she already knew about the press conference. She was completely unfazed by it.

Victor: I highly doubt that. She still has newman blood running through her veins, okay?

Nick: Okay. So, I mean, what are you thinking? Is there another chess move to be made here?

Victor: I just wonder why victoria would tell you that she and ashland went to new york to start a new venture.

Nick: Do you think she knew that I would tell you? I mean, are you already seven steps ahead?

Victor: You’ll find out.

Nick: Look, I just — I don’t like all the deception that is required with all these moves and counter moves. Is more gamesmanship needed here? You know all the lies we had to pry out of ashland and everything we had to do to counter them. I just don’t know if it’s necessary. Do you think it’s gonna reunite the family?

Victoria: I am not going back on my decision. And [Sighs] I couldn’t stand letting myself be controlled and coddled by them for one more second. I don’t need their so-called protection. I need them to see me as a person that cannot be manipulated. I know what I want. And I’m doing the right thing. It’s — it’s — it’s the only thing to do.

Ashland: I know you don’t need my approval or my opinion, but for what it’s worth, i agree. I think it’s time for you to stand up for yourself, and i want to be standing right there beside you while you do. Your family has pushed and pushed and pushed, and they deserve whatever they get from this point on.

Victoria: Yes. And in time, they’re gonna realize that I know exactly what I’m doing.

Ashland: Oh, and I hope I’m there to witness that moment when the newman family finally admits defeat. I’ll tell you what — why don’t we stop talking about newmans?

Victoria: Yes.

Ashland: Let’s eat.

Victoria: Oh, yes, let’s eat. Ugh. I’m ready to relax.

Lauren: Ah. Hello, everyone.

Chelsea: Hi.

Lauren: Have I arrived at a different meeting than i thought?

[ Laughter ]

Billy: No, no, just a chance encounter. We’re not getting into the fashion business.

Lily: No, we have enough on our plate.

Billy: Chelsea was just sharing some, uh — some very sound advice about the business of podcasting.

Chelsea: I apologize again if I was too blunt.

Billy: You weren’T. Hey, lauren, have you heard the one about the blunt pencil? Forget it. It’s pointless.

Lauren: Oh!

Chelsea: Oh, my god! What have I done? I take it back. You’re not really that funny.

Billy: I have only started. Wait till the next episode.

[ Laughter ]

Chelsea: Well, we should go.

Lauren: Okay, let’s go.

Billy: Um, excuse me, miss. Why did you not tell me that my podcast was miserable?

Lily: No, I — I wasn’t sugarcoating my opinion. I thought that your tone was refreshing. I mean, there’s a lot of chipper podcasts out there, and i thought that yours was very, you know, real.

Billy: “Real.” To you, that translates into dour. I mean, honestly, am I a morose person?

Lily: Okay, stop. Don’t let a little constructive criticism send you down a rabbit hole.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Lily: Okay? No, look how many people are listening to just your podcast. And the comments on social media — people like it. Even chelsea thought you were funny.

Billy: Ah. Well, she’s not wrong. I do have a great sense of humor. Or about people needing joy and laughter in their life.

Lauren: I’m so sorry I’m late. You can, uh, blame my husband for the delay.

Chelsea: Ah. Looks like you’re really upset about it.

Lauren: So upset.

[ Both laugh ] It was a much-needed respite.

Chelsea: I get it. A little love in the afternoon. Lucky you.

Lauren: I am lucky. I’m married to the love of my life.

Chelsea: Mm.

Lauren: Alright, now let’s talk about fashion.

Chelsea: Okay. Well, I heard about gloria’s trip to london. And I know I’ve been out of the scene for a while, but I am really interested in all the trends and designers over there.

Lauren: Oh, yeah. There are some wonderful, fresh ieas coming out of the city. I’ll put the two of you together.

Chelsea: Okay. Perfect.

Lauren: There is one thing. Um, when I sat down with gloria, she seemed very concerned about you. She felt like there was some tension between you and chloe.

Ashland: There’s got to be other investors we can reach out to. I’ll go back through my list of major players.

Victoria: Yes, and I’ll go through mine, as well, but so far, I can’t think of any that my father can’t get to.

[ Sighs ] It’s frustrating to admit, but I think that my father’s influence outweighs ours by a bit.

Ashland: Boy, victor really is a piece of work, isn’t he? You know, most fathers — they want to support their daughters’ choices, not actively sabotage them. And I don’t understand why he keeps trying to rule your life with such a tight grip. I mean, what does he get out of that? He’s just driving you further and further away. But — but having said all that, I am not going to let him thwart our dream, alright, of starting a whole new company together. We’re just gonna have to figure out something else.

Victoria: I know that you’ve had your reservations about this, but maybe we should give some more thought to funding our venture ourselves. Yes, I know. I know. It’s risky, but, I mean, is it really such a big risk when we’re betting on ourselves?

Ashland: Okay, well, that’s a fair point. We both certainly know we’re capable of doing great things.

Victor: I know that we’ll be successful. I know it. And we won’t have to, uh, waste our time and effort going back to the financial community and begging for money. And we will save ourselves the humiliation of possibly knocking on doors and getting them slammed in our faces around town.

Ashland: Once it gets out there that we’re having trouble raising money, it’s gonna cast a shadow over everything we’re trying to do. And the idea of going back to investors and possibly being rejected — I don’t like that at all, no.

Victoria: The more rejection we face, the worse the perception of our new company will be.

Ashland: That’s the last thing we want.

Victoria: No.

Ashland: Maybe it would be a bigger thrill and there’d be more satisfaction in starting something entirely on our own, creating something from scratch. And doing it with you — that would be the world to me. I… maybe you’re right. Maybe this is the best move. And think of this, too — if all the investment capital is ours, then all off the potential profit is ours. I mean, why give away part of the house when you can have the whole thing?

Victoria: Yeah.

Ashland: Let’s do this. Me and money are all-in.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Hey, guys.

Victor: Hey.

Adam: What’s going on here? If it has anything to do with newman, sally and I should probably be in the loop.

Nick: Hey, congratulations, you know, on your promotions.

Sally: Thanks.

Adam: Wasn’t, uh, something we were necessarily expecting, at least not the way it came to pass.

Sally: Yeah, who would have imagined victoria would have walked away from everything like that?

Adam: I always thought the company was her top priority, but I guess not. Sally thinks her running off with ashland is romantic.

Sally: Well, she obviously loves him, and in the end, that’s the most important thing, right?

Adam: I know that you only care about victoria’s well-being since you don’t give a damn one way or another who’s running newman. You’ve made it clear that you’re not invested in the family business.

Nick: Yeah, well, things may be changing on that front.

Adam: Really? Well, um, I look forward to hearing more about it. Excuse us.

[ Cellphone thuds ]

[ Glasses thud ]

Victor: What did you mean by your last remark? Can dove stop 98%

Chelsea: I venture to guess that her concern is just gloria being gloria.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Well, I know my mother-in-law well, and I certainly know how she can be. And this was not about gossip. She was genuinely concerned about the dynamic between you and chloE.

Chelsea: Chloe and I are best friends and old pros. Of course we’re gonna have disagreements every once in a while, but we’ll get through it. We always do.

Lauren: Okay. Good. I’m relieved to hear that.

Chelsea: Yeah. Please don’t even give it a second thought.

Lauren: Alright. So, let’s move on. Have you heard from summer?

Chelsea: Yes. Actually, I have a meeting with her later today.

Lauren: Mm.

Chelsea: Do you know what she wants to talk to me about?

Lauren: I do, but I don’t want to step on her news.

Chelsea: Oh. Okay, well, that’s a tease. I’m even more intrigued now. Can you give me a hint?

Lauren: No.

[ Both laugh ] You’ll know soon enough. I would love to talk to you about your fabulous fabric choices, though.

Chelsea: Alright. If you insist. I’m so glad you like them. I am definitely attracted to prints that are layered, bright, and interesting.

Lauren: Oh. That’s fantastic. Oh, yes, I love this. Especially this.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Victoria: This is so exciting. And, you know, I’m as eager as you are to get the ball rolling on this. I think the first thing I want to do is I’m gonna open a corporate bank account for our newly formed company.

Ashland: [ Laughs ]

Victoria: You know what you should do? You should call our real-estate broker and have him look for a property for us.

Ashland: Ah.

Victoria: We need an entire building.

Ashland: Oh, you don’t think a floor of offices is gonna be enough?

Victoria: No, no. We need to think big. Come on. Why? Why would we waste the time and money on a lease when we’re gonna be growing at a rapid rate? I mean, I assume so, don’t you?

Ashland: I just love the way we both look at the world the same way — as something to be devoured.

Victoria: And I can’t wait to savor every morsel.

Ashland: I feel like we’re so close to recapturing the magic we had when we first met.

Victoria: Closer than you can imagine.

Nick: I didn’t mean anything by what I said about the company. It was just a knee-jerk response to adam.

Victor: You sure about that? I’ve noticed an increased interest on your part in newman business.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] You’re reading too much into it.

Victor: I am?

Nick: Yeah. I was just trying to get under his skin.

Victor: Hmm.

Nick: Look, we both know he doesn’t give a damn about victoria. He only cares about running newman enterprises. And I just wanted to give him something to worry about.

Victor: Huh.

Ashland: Yes, you heard me correctly. We want to buy an entire building! Yeah. Yeah, no, can you take a look, see what’s on the market? We want to move quickly on this thing. Right. Yeah. No, that sounds like it might work. Yeah. Interesting. Okay. Uh-huh. Great. Okay.

Allie: [ Chuckles ] Sorry. Hey.

Noah: I was trying to make a joke about running into you when you’re about to go running.

Allie: That’s not really a joke since I called you and invited you to join me.

Noah: Okay. Not funny. But, you know, it did sound a little charming in my head.

Allie: Mm-hmm. Sure it did. Alright. Are you ready?

Noah: Let’s do this.

Allie: Alright. Great. Try to keep up!

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: So, what brings you by? A big cup of coffee or a little friendly conversation?

Nick: I’ll take both.

Sharon: I, um, saw victor and adam’s press conference earlier. I hope you knew that all of that was gonna happen.

Nick: Yeah, I was fully aware and in the loop this time. Once victoria said she was reunited with ashland, the writing was on the wall. She packed up her things, she said goodbye to the family, and then left town, the way she said she was gonna.

Sharon: Really? I’m kind of surprised how quickly that situation escalated.

Nick: When my sister makes up her mind, there is no slowing her down.

Sharon: Mm. Well, I hope you at least got to speak to victoria before she left and tell her that you will always be there for her, no matter what she decides to do.

Nick: I did, uh, get a chance to talk to her. Grateful for that. Obviously completely disagree with her decision, but me being frustrated with the family is pretty common right now.

Sharon: Is there something else going on?

Nick: I just really don’t like it that my dad put adam into the ceo seat. We both know how he handled that last time. And I think it’s a foolish move to shove adam right into victoria’s chair before it even gets cold. Victoria’s reign may be over, but trust me — the second round of games is about to begin.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

[ Keys clacking ]

Tessa: [ Clears throat ] Hi.

Mariah: Hey.

Tessa: [ Smooches ]

Mariah: Why’d you stop? Oh, well, uh, with you working remotely, I figured my music was probably distracting.

Mariah: What are you talking about? How many people get to work with a private concert in the background? I love it. Just like I love calling you my wife.

Tessa: Well, tell me — what’s my wife working on lately?

Mariah: Well, uh, the marketing team has their hands full now that jabot has acquired marchetti, so we all need to get up to speed on the fashion industry.

Tessa: Whew, that sounds like a pretty big deal.

Mariah: It is. It is. But we can handle it. It’s all good. And it means that kyle is gonna be sticking around for longer with harrison. You know, I’d even be happy to see summer stick around, too.

Tessa: Look how far you’ve come.

Mariah: I know. It’s wonderful.

[ Laughs ]

Tessa: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: But as thrilled as i am that they’re gonna be staying in town, that also means that kyle’s mom, diane, is gonna be doing the same. And that… that is very, very complicated for a lot of people in genoa city.

Tessa: Hmm.

Diane: Jack, is everything alright?

Jack: Yeah. Yeah. Everything’s fine. I just have something I have to deal with.

Diane: Oh. Then I’ll let you have some privacy. I was hoping to spend some time with harrison anyway. I thought maybe I could take him to the park, if that’s alright?

Jack: Uh, sure. I’m sure he’d like that, especially with kyle and summer kind of tied up.

Diane: Excellent. I will go get him ready and let the nanny know she can take a break.

Diane: Harrison is so excited about our playdate. I’ll just pack some snacks.

Tessa: Well, I hope that kyle knows, whatever happens with diane, that we’re here to support him.

Mariah: Oh. Yeah. I’ve definitely made that clear. I mean, I know what it’s like to have your mom come into your life suddenly when you’re an adult, so I’m happy to be his sounding board.

Tessa: Mm.

Mariah: What are you looking for in there?

Tessa: Uh, tea and honey. I thought that we had some, but I guess we’re out.

Mariah: Really? I mean, we had plenty the other day. Did you go through it already?

Tessa: Yeah. I guess I must have. I’ve been drinking a lot because my throat is still a little sore.

Mariah: Does it hurt to sing?

Tessa: No, no. Uh, not really. I was just resting my voice because I’ve been singing a lot for rehearsing for tour, and that’s probably why it’s aggravated. I’m sure it’s no big deal.

Mariah: Maybe you’re coming down with something.

Tessa: Well, but I don’t have any other symptoms. It’s probably allergies. You know, it’s that time of year.

Mariah: Yeah, but your throat’s been bugging you ever since we got back from the honeymoon. Maybe you should go and have it checked out. You know, I heard of these amazing people. They’re called doctors. And they can help with that sort of thing.

Tessa: I’m sure it’s nothing. And instead of debating the issue, maybe you should, uh, take a break with me.

Sharon: Newman family games. That sounds ominous.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Dad and adam are only thinking about themselves. You know, they each have an agenda. They’re not thinking about what’s best for the company.

Sharon: Well, hopefully they at least have one goal in common — that newman enterprises succeeds, right?

Nick: I will allow that adam does seem to possess the skills to do a job like this. He’s done a great job of evolving in the past year. But his desire to ascend to the throne comes from a very selfish place.

Sharon: Look, I’m — I’m not trying to defend adam here, but — I don’t know — is it possible that maybe you’re being a little too hard on him?

Nick: Sharon, just look this situation with ashland. Adam doesn’t give a damn about victoria or what happens to her. He’s just patiently waiting for his chance to swoop in and grab the ceo title for himself.

Sharon: Hmm. Well, maybe he was just concerned that the company would suffer with so much going on?

Nick: Ultimately, his true motives don’t even matter. I mean, this was dad’s call to make. And it’s not like he didn’t have other options. I mean, my mom certainly could have done the job herself, or, in an emergency, dad could have stepped back in.

Sharon: You know, I’m surprised that nikki didn’t push for that job. I mean, she was victoria’s co-ceo.

Nick: Yeah, she’s got mixed feelings about that. But this move was made to send a message to victoria and to provoke a reaction. So, this isn’t about business. It’s strictly personal.

Sharon: Ah, so your parents are hoping this move with adam will make victoria come running back.

Nick: There you go.

Sharon: Well, hey, it’s a gamble, but it could work. And if it does, where does that leave adam?

Nick: Well, adam’s no dummy. I’m sure he’s got his eyes wide open. He knows how dad likes to operate, but he wants to prove that he’s the right man for the job, whether my sister changes her mind or not. And unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.

Sharon: It just never ends, does it?

Nick: It really doesn’T. This whole thing is filled with a bunch of gory details I’m not gonna bore you with, but just know this — everyone has got an angle, but they’re all acting on emotion. My sister, my dad, adam, my mom. They all just need to take a collective breath and figure out what is the next best move to make.

Sharon: And who’s gonna get them to do that?

Nick: Well, unfortunately, it’s times like this I’m reminded that I don’t have a real official role at newman, other than my board seat. So, at times, I would like to have more influence over the, uh — the outcomes of the crises when they pop up.

Sharon: What are you saying here? Are you actually considering going back to newman? Can dove stop 98%

Nick: That was not my intent. I’m not seriously considering throwing my hat back into the ring at newman.

Sharon: Mm, maybe not consciously, but the way you were talking just now…

Nick: I don’t know. I just would like to be more than just some voice offering up my opinions and advice from the outside.

Sharon: Since when? ‘Cause I thought you wanted nothing to do with newman enterprises.

Nick: Yeah. Me too. But this whole situation’s got me really rethinking some things. I mean, it’s been a long time since I’ve felt like this. I thought everything was going great. You know, the company was flourishing under victoria’s incredible leadership. Mom was her right-hand man. Dad was in advisory role. Adam was over at newman media crushing it.

Sharon: Well, then that all blew up.

Nick: Again. I’m just [Sighs] — Just very nervous about how this is gonna play out within my family and also in the eyes of the public and the business world.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Tessa: Hi.

Nick: Hey. There they are.

Sharon: Oh, there’s the two newlyweds. I barely see you since you’ve been home from france, even though you live right upstairs.

Mariah: We’ve just been taking care of stuff that piled up when we were gone.

Nick: Ah. Too busy honeymooning.

Sharon: Hey, enjoy some time alone being honeymooners. Say no more.

Nick: How’s your day today?

Mariah: Uh, well, I am fantastic, but this one…

Tessa: This one is fine. I just need a mug of tea and honey.

Mariah: Yeah, because she guzzled all of ours down for her sore throat.

Sharon: Really? That’s been going on for a while now, hasn’t it?

Tessa: Yeah, but I’m — I’m sure it’s nothing.

Sharon: Well, whether it is or whether it isn’t, um, you should see someone about it.

Mariah: And there it is, the other reason why we are here — because I knew that I would find someone who agrees with me.

[ Both breathing heavily ]

Noah: You know, I consider myself a pretty decent athlete.

Allie: You do?

Noah: Yeah.

Allie: Yeah?

Noah: I play sports, I work out all the time, but… you’re fast, like, really fast.

Allie: Well, I run almost every day. It’s kind of my thing. Well, one of my many things.

Noah: Along with chemical engineering, being super analytical and precise about everything? You know, some people might say you’re a type-a personality.

Allie: And you know what? Those people might be right. What? You got a problem with it?

Noah: No. No. In fact, I kind of envy you. I wish I had a routine.

Allie: You can always create new habits right now.

Noah: Nah. Nah. It’s just not me. I’ve always needed to be inspired to get stuff done.

Allie: Mm. Well, maybe — just maybe — you can find some inspiration from the way I just kicked your butt.

Noah: Oh.

Allie: I mean, I’m sure you don’t want to be embarrassed like that again.

Noah: Oh, that will never happen again.

Allie: Ah. Uh-huh.

Diane: Have fun on the playground, harrison! Oh. Nice to see you two.

[ Knock on door ]

Phyllis: Hey. Thank you for coming. Come on in. Thanks. Um…thank you for the opportunity. Uh… and you’re right. It’s better to talk face-to-face.

Jack: I’m here to let you say whatever it is you have to say, but I should warn you — it’s not gonna change anything.

Phyllis: Okay. I get it. Thanks for giving me the chance. You want some wine?

Jack: It’s a little early for me. Please don’t let me stop you.

Phyllis: Okay, well, I’m — I’m having wine. It’s good for the nerves. I mean — but please join me. It’s a great year. Um… you’re not gonna make me drink alone, are you?

Jack: This isn’t gonna work, red.

Phyllis: Well, how do you know that? You haven’t even heard anything I have to say. You know better than to count me out. If your moderate to severe crohn’s disease

Sharon: Okay, tessa, you are my daughter-in-law now, so I’m going to give you some motherly advice. You need to make an appointment. It’s been too many days, and it’s not gotten better. And what could it hurt? If it’s something minor, it’s no harm, no foul, and if it is something more serious, well, you’ll have caught it early.

Nick: And nobody has brought up the real upset of all this, and that is you could get mariah to stop bugging you to death about it because we all know she’s never gonna let it go.

Sharon: Love is the most important part of marriage, but compromise is right up there with it.

Mariah: Exactly. And, look, one day you are gonna need me to compromise on something, and I promise I will do it gladly for the benefit of our relationship.

Tessa: I’m gonna hold you to that because we have witnesses.

Mariah: I promise. So, you’ll make the appointment?

Tessa: Ugh! Okay, okay. I’ll see if my doctor can squeeze me in.

Mariah: Today.

Tessa: Okay. As soon as possible.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Wonderful. I knew I came to the right place.

Nick: You’re welcome.

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Diane: Allie, I’m glad you found another young person to hang out with. You two seem to be spending a lot of time together. And, noah, I’m sure you know other people your age that you could introduce allie to, as well.

Noah: Yeah, I do, but I don’t see why that’s any of your concern.

Allie: Noah, she’s just — she’s just being friendly.

Diane: No, no, it’s alright, allie. I thought noah was okay with me. He seemed fine the last time we saw each other. But now I know he was just holding back.

Noah: What did you expect? What, that I could just forget the past, stand around making small talk like nothing ever happened? I wish I can give you the benefit of the doubt, diane. I really do. But you did some seriously messed-up stuff to people I care about. And I don’t plan on getting over that anytime soon.

Phyllis: Okay. Uh, listen, I did a lot of thinking when I was in savannah, and, um… how I flaunted our relationship to stick it to diane. I’m — [ Sighs ] I hate that you think I used you. I’m so sorry. If I could do it over again… listen. You were right to be furious with me. I’m — I’m furious with myself.

Jack: Phyllis —

Phyllis: Just let me finish. Just let me — let me finish. Um… uh, it was outrageous and it was immature and it wrong. And there’s no justifying it. I’m not — I’m not trying to justify my actions.

[ Breathes deeply ] Jack. It’s old wounds, you know? It’s just a lot of old wounds and insecurities and… it’s getting the better of me.

Jack: You talk a great game. You always have. I’ve heard this before. And remember — I got a recent reminder that you are a master at faking sincerity.

Phyllis: You think I’m faking it right now? Is that what you think? You think I’m being cavalier about this?

[ Voice breaking ] I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve right now. I may seem fine, but I am losing it inside. I am losing it. And I am sorry. I don’t know what to tell you. I regret my actions. I regret them. I do. I mean, and I cannot believe that I blew everything up when we were getting so close.

Jack: Close to what? We had a couple passionate encounters, prompted by the return of a woman you hate.

Phyllis: Is that how you see everything?

Jack: No, what we had is not the beginning of a relationship. What we had…is a moment… to imagine what could have been, a little what-if. At least, that’s what it was for me. For you, it was a calculated move designed to one-up diane.

Phyllis: Okay, it was more complicated than that.

Jack: Oh, you want to be honest? Good. Let’s be honest. You only regret what you did because it backfired. I thought things had changed. I thought things you changed. I thought you were finally capable of building a future that we talked about, that we wanted, that we deserved. That woman came back to town, and in no time out comes the phyllis of years ago. I am not gonna make the same mistakes again. You have to accept the fact that whatever fleeting moment we had is over.

Phyllis: I have changed. I have. And I will prove it to you.

Diane: You have every reason to feel that way about me, noah.

Allie: Look, guys, I wasn’t here when all of this happened, so I can’t speak to that. But what I do know is that diane did me a big favor. Without her, I would still have been all alone out in the world, and now I have this big, beautiful family, out of nowhere.

Noah: Yeah, but the way she went about introducing you and jack was a bit sketchy, don’t you think?

Allie: Agreed. Absolutely. She could have gone about it in a better way. But I do think who she is now versus what she did in the past isn’t the same person.

Diane: Thank you, allie. I’m touched and grateful that you’ve even given me even half a chance. But I have no choice. I have to face these attacks because I did do some pretty terrible things. And I understand that there are some people who will have a problem with my presence here, but I can take it. Because spending time with my son and grandson makes it all absolutely worth it. Harrison, come on, little one!

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: I am so glad that tessa’s doctor could get her in today. She was being so stubborn. She wasn’t listening to me. So, thank you for the backup.

Sharon: Just doing my mother-in-law duties.

Mariah: And thank you for letting us derail whatever conversation you were having when we walked in.

Nick: Tessa’s health is far more important.

Mariah: Well, I saw the look between the two of you. Anything wrong?

Sharon: Um, no complaints on my end, at least not at the moment.

Mariah: Nick? What about you? Is everything alright?

Nick: I’m assuming you saw the press conference?

Mariah: Yes. Yes, I did. Victoria’s out. Adam’s in. I — I definitely did not see that coming.

Nick: Well, you should know by now newmans like to keep people on their toes.

Mariah: I’ll take that to mean that you don’t want to talk about it. Or least you don’t want to talk about it with me, which is fine. So, let me just say — I wish you luck with whatever you’re going through with your family.

Nick: Thank you.

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Mariah: Oh. Um, well, that’s work, so I — I’ve got to take this. I’m so sorry. I have to run. But thank you guys. I’ll see you later.

Sharon: See you later.

Nick: Bye.

Mariah: Hi. Yes, uh, just one second. Let me grab my computer.

Sharon: So, where were we? Earlier it seemed like maybe you were just sorting through some of your feelings, but I got the distinct impression that you would not be content sitting on the sidelines of newman.

Nick: You seem shocked by the very idea of that.

Sharon: Oh, I am. Believe me, I never thought that we would be having this conversation again…ever.

Nick: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: I have flaws. I know I have flaws. Everybody has flaws. But I went and I extended an olive branch to that woman. I told her that I’m putting the past behind me. There’s no resentment. And you know why I did that? Because it was best for all of us.

Jack: From what I understand, the real reason for this grand gesture was summer, who was present at this supposed meeting of the minds. She have to drag you there kicking and screaming?

Phyllis: No, she didn’T. I went willingly.

Jack: Well, you’ll forgive me if I doubt the veracity of this so-called truth.

Phyllis: Okay, do you think that was easy for me to sit there and say all of that to diane? No. It was very difficult. But why did I do it? Because it was good. It was the greater good — for everyone!

Jack: Including us? There is no us.

Phyllis: Stop it.

[ Stammers ] Okay. Let’s just go back. When we went to california to find allie and then we discovered diane… I mean, did you — did you not feel that there was a deeper connection in our relationship?

Jack: As friends. As friends, phyllis. We should have settled for that. Look, I take full blame for crossing the linE. I should have known better. But I let my desire and my fervent hope for something greater get in my way. And now I may have destroyed even the friendship.

Phyllis: No, you didn’T. You didn’t destroy it. You didn’T. I’m still your friend. I mean, come on, jack. Enough of this. This is not where our story ends. You love rich, delicious ice cream.

Nick: Believe me, these thoughts of going back to newman are just as much of a shock to me, but what can I say? I’ve got a long history with that place.

Sharon: Yes. You led that company many times over the years. But I thought you were done with it now, at least in any formal capacity. And, you know, I was really proud of you when you extricated yourself from the family business and all of its drama that comes with it for what i thought was the very last time.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. I was convinced I was done with that place forever.

Sharon: Well, you really embraced becoming your own man, and you’ve flourished at new hope. And now noah joining you there — that’s just the icing on the cake.

Nick: All true.

Sharon: So then help me understand why you would consider going back.

Nick: No, no, no. I’m not making any moves right now, alright? This is just two people talking about some very nonspecific ideas in some broad terms.

Sharon: Understood.

Nick: Hypothetically speaking, if I had stayed at the company, I would have been in a much better position to help protect my sister’s ceo seat. I also would have been able to do a lot more in regards to preventing my dad from pitting victoria against adam, while also supporting my mother.

Sharon: Because you are the voice of reason in the family trying to find some balance.

Nick: Well, I’ve tried my best. I’ve certainly made a lot of mistakes. But I think everybody in the family knows that I mean well and that my priorities are straight when it comes to their personal lives, as well as the company. You know, the irony is that I’m in this position of neutrality because I’ve been able to keep so much distance from the company for so long.

Sharon: Before you take this any further, I think that you just need to ask yourself one question. At this point in your life, would you feel more satisfied taking a larger role in newman or maintaining the distance that has served you so well until now?

Allie: Thank you, sir.

Noah: Allie, before we go in, I — I wanted to apologize for making you feel uncomfortable earlier. I hate that I got so worked up in front of diane.

Allie: No, no, you have nothing to apologize for.

Noah: Yes, I do. I thought that I had accepted diane being back in town. I mean, I was perfectly civil before. I-I don’t know. Something about seeing her today just… all the stuff she put my family through just came flooding back in. And she caused a lot of chaos in this town before she died. Or before she disappeared, rather. And now she’s causing even more by showing her face around here again.

Allie: Well, but you can’t really blame her for the latter, right? I mean, that’s not really her fault.

Noah: Yeah, allie, I can’t help but wonder — what makes you think she deserves a second chance when you don’t even really know what she did?

Phyllis: Let’s press the reset button here. This is — I mean, you think I’m insincere? Really? I mean, you — you know me better than anyone. Look in my eyes. Don’t you see the truth?

Jack: Yes, I look in your eyes and I see the truth. That’s not the point.

Phyllis: What am I missing?

Jack: The very root of the whole thing, why it is you acted the way you did to begin with. This isn’t new. You keep telling me about growth and maturity. Phyllis, look back over the last few years at your relationship with men. It has been a disaster.

Phyllis: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Uh, wow, that’s low.

Jack: No, I — red, listen to me. Think about it. Billy, nick, me. The last time you were with nick, you couldn’t have been happier. Things were going great. And then they went south, and you turned to me. And then just when it seemed we were gonna be together, in a matter of days you sabotaged any potential there was.

Phyllis: Because of diane. And I let it go.

Jack: I know you’re gonna try to let it go. You’ve tried to break the pattern in the past. Maybe it’s not a pattern. Maybe it’s just who you are. It just seems to me, whoever you’re with, however long you’re with them… it’s never enough.

Mariah: Hi! How’d the appointment go?

[ Door closes ]

Tessa: Not like I expected.

Mariah: What happened?

Tessa: Well, I thought the sore throat thing was no big deal, but, um, I was wrong. My doctor said the preliminary diagnosis is vocal-chord nodules.

Mariah: What? I mean, those are really serious, aren’t they?

Tessa: Yeah. He’s sending me to a specialist for a confirmation and treatment options, but worst-case scenario is surgery.

Mariah: Oh, my god. Tessa, I am so sorry.

Tessa: [ Voice breaking ] I mean, this could take me out of the summer tour. I mean, you know how important this is to my career. But most importantly, I’m worried about my voice long term. I just — I don’t know what I’m gonna do if I can’t s–

Mariah: Okay. Slow down. Alright? You don’t even have a full diagnosis yet. So, we’ll go to the specialist, we’ll see what needs to be done to treat this, and we’ll just take it one step at a time, alright?

Tessa: Alright. I’m just — I’m — I’m — I’m really scared.

Mariah: I know. But let’s look at it this way. You know, if you need some time off or you need to get surgery or treatment of any kind… it’s better to know now for all of the future tours. Because I believe with all of my heart you are going to be singing and you are gonna be selling out tours for years and years to come. Come here.

Nick: You always know how to get right to the heart of the matter.

Sharon: That’s my job. And I think that if you look inside and you dig deep, you will find the answer. You’ll know what to do.

Nick: Easy, right?

Sharon: Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but trust your instincts. I believe in you, and I support you 100%.

Nick: Well, I really appreciate your wisdom.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Sorry. Hey. Uh, okay. Can it wait? Alright. I’m on my way. It’s my dad.

Sharon: What did he want?

Nick: He wouldn’t say. He just said that it can’t wait.

Allie: Look, noah, I get that I’m coming from a completely different place, right? I have no history with diane, and all I know is that she made this town very angry in her past. She basically admitted that herself. So, I understand why you feel so strongly about her.

Noah: Good. That’s a hard thing to forget. I can’t just pretend like nothing happened.

Allie: No, and I would never try to tell you to do that. But I do believe that forgiveness is important. I mean, look at what happened between my dad and my grandfather. It would have changed so much for all of us if my dad just found a way to reach out and forgive jack.

Noah: Yeah, your life would have been a lot different.

Allie: So different. My whole family would have been in my life from the very beginning. When my dad died, it wouldn’t just have been me by his bedside. I think without forgiveness and trust, life can be really lonely. I didn’t realize that before, but I’m starting to get it now.

Noah: Well, that is a very healthy and optimistic way to look at things.

Allie: Well, I highly recommend it.

Diane: Harrison, stay where i can see you! I love watching you play!

[ Chuckles ]

[ Breathes deeply ] It’s all I’ve ever wanted.

Diane: Thank you for understanding how much kyle means to me. He’s the biggest part of my heart. And I have ached for him every day since I left.

Allie: What exactly do you hope will happen if you do see kyle, face-to-face?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about that. Little daydreams that I have. I try to keep the hopes small so as not to tempt fate.

Allie: And what are the hopes if you dream bigger?

Diane: Then I’m his mother again. In every way. I — I’m part of his life. Part of his days. I dote on his child. We have sunday breakfast in the abbott dining room.

Allie: And everyone accepts you being there.

Diane: The family you’re part of is big and loving when they let you in. And there is no place better in the world. You’ll see. It’ll happen.

Diane: [ Breathes deeply ]

[ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Uh… you cannot mean what you just said to me.

Jack: I do mean it. Why do you constantly insist on getting in your own way? Why is it you can never fully embrace happiness, fulfillment? For you, it is — it is always about the wanting, the chase… never about actually having it.

[ Door slams ]
