Well, I’m not gonna nominate obrecht for sainthood, but she’s a different person to what she was ten years ago.

Yeah, since faison died. I mean, right around the time that he did, you know, she started to realize the tragic consequences of her obsession. She’s lost two children now, and her grandson and her niece, nina, are the only family she has. Wait, isn’t she supposed to be donating bone marrow to nina’s daughter?

I mean, it’s not like cassadine yanked her off the street. I mean, that-

that stunt that they pulled at the nurses’ ball, that took a lot of planning.

It sort of implies that she is pivotal for some reason. And given that she is a brilliant researcher, I bet victor wants her for her skills in the lab, not her sparkling conversation.

So if victor needs something that only obrecht can give, maybe that means what he has isn’t a bomb.

A far more sinister weapon.

[Dramatic music]

In this canister is the pathogen mikkos and I developed.

Forgive me if I don’t applaud.

But there’s still one step we have to take before we can begin. And that’s where you come in, my dear liesl. I take it you’ve read all the material provided you by my scientists that have been working on this.

Ah, good. Then you’ll know all about the pathogen. You know its modes of transmission, as well as the antidote. And since this pathogen has been untouched for decades, I need you to check that it’s still viable and can be effective. Then I’ll need you to do the same with the antidote. You’ll find, uh, a microscope and slides here. So shall we begin our work?

You fool! What are you doing? The pathogen is airborne. If you open that, we’ll almost certainly die.

[Scoffs] Really? Do you think I’m that stupid? To handle a pathogen that’s potentially active?

Well, of course I’m sure. Mikkos and I developed this pathogen so that it’d only be activated by uv light. That’s why it’s down here in this bunker, so far away from the sunlight.

Still, I–I cannot study this pathogen in–in these conditions. I–I need a controlled environment and protective clothing.

Well, I’ll pretend not to be insulted by your lack of faith. Now get on and do as I say. You have to prove that this pathogen can be effective, as well as the antidote. And then once you’ve done that, I’ll release it into the atmosphere, and humanity can finally pay for the damages done to our planet.

That pathogen kills.

Yes, that’s right. Mikkos and I developed the pathogen to be lethal to the vast majority of human beings. Now, there is a small percentage that will have a natural immunity. And we have developed an antidote for we cassadines and our descendants.

How can you do this? How can you sentence millions of people to death? Are you really that greedy?

Oh, no, this isn’t about money. No, I wouldn’t make the same mistake my brother did. No. I’m doing this for the greater good.

Um, so I just got this call from valentin. I thought he would be here. And he left me this cryptic message, and I texted him back. I even called him, and it’s radio silence.

Yeah, he doesn’t have a choice.

Sounds like you know where he is.

He’s with laura and curtis and drew. They’ve–they’ve gone to find victor, bring the hostages back.

Sounds risky.

It is. But valentin was determined to go, no matter the risk.

Mommy, what’s that?

This is a very special gift.

But it took more than the two of us. We ended up getting some extra help from a most unexpected source.

Tracy, you took on victor cassadine’s goons all by yourself?

It started out as a solo mission, but then I ultimately got a little help.

Okay, hold on. Are you saying you found victor? Where is he? Were you able to stop him?

He, unfortunately, was not at the auction, so, much to my dismay, I did not get to put an end to his miserable life.

Tracy quartermaine’s back in town?

[Chuckles] Well, that explains the creepy feeling I had this morning like there was something crawling over my grave.

Felicia and I were able to locate ethan, but if it weren’t for tracy and her sizable bank account, ethan would still have a bullseye on his back. Fortunately, tracy came through when needed, so there’s no reason to hide anymore. My son is free, and so am I.

Hm.

[Clears throat] Holly, at some point, I have got to ask you, who is your plastic surgeon? Because I see no traces of burns or even a scar. In fact, you look good as new.

Diane, I realize that I-

I have some explaining to do.

No, no, no. Let’s see if I’ve got it. You fooled victor into thinking that you were toast, literally, in that cabin fire. Of course, this was after I had been duped into thinking that you had drugged robert’s drink so that you could steal the ice princess. In other words, for your brilliant plan to succeed, you needed a witness, otherwise known as a stooge. And I was cast in the role.

Valentin texted me, you know, right before he got on the plane.

I’m sure he was thinking about you. I’ m sure you’re wondering why,at such a fraught moment, he was thinking about me. So I’m gonna just let you see for yourself.

Okay, “must be quick, cousin. I don’t know when or…”

[Sighs] “Or if I’ll be coming back. But as the executor of my will–” oh, I–I didn’t realize that you were the executor of his will.

Mm, keep reading. Um, “I trust that you will make sure “charlotte is taken care of and loved. “And I’m cc’ing martin on this too. Gotta go.”

I’m worried about valentin. I am. But the two of us have learned to trust each other. It’s funny, because I used to lump him into being one of the horrible, homicidal cassadines.

I don’t know. I think that we’ve changed each other, valentin and I, for the better.

Robert, don’t sugarcoat it. Because you’re right.

We needed an unimpeachable witness, or victor would never have believed that I’d stolen the necklace. All I can say in my defense is that it bought me time to find my son. And it kept the real necklace out of victor’s hands.

Until now. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that your son is safe and that that fire was as fake as the necklace you tried to pass off as the real thing. But your brilliant plan didn’t prevent victor from getting his hands on the actual ice princess or keep him from taking all those hostages. Word of advice: Next time–hm. Mm. Trust me a little more and use me a little less. Excuse me.

Uh-huh, and you married mitch williams even though you caught him in bed with susan moore, who would later become jason’s biological mother after her affair with uncle alan. That’s three, if anyone’s keeping track.

Enough! All right. I admit that my marital track record is not exactly spotless.

Well, that’s putting it mildly.

Okay, as fun as this has been, I need to go tell the bride-to-be about one more shock.

I’m sure willow’s wedding’s gonna be nice, especially since the quartermaines are gonna all out ’cause they’re letting me in.

Yeah, the quartermaines have some nerve. They lord that over you. You know, they managed to keep their hands clean this time, but it doesn’t mean that quartermaines don’t play dirty, especially if their precious elq is at stake. You know, drew and car-

She’s lucky to be alive, no thanks to victor.

Kind of dropped off the grid, along with curtis and drew. She wants to corner victor and rescue the hostages.

I always knew victor was dangerous, but it seems like he’s spinning out of control.

That’s because he’s getting close to implementing his plan, whatever it is.

I know you wish you could be with laura and the rest.

I feel so bloody useless, chained to this desk. I can’t help anyone.

Maybe you can. Do you know, can anna have visitors?

Well, firstly, I need to apologize to her, and… you both need to hear what ethan told me.

Yeah, that’s just guilt. Look, nice try, my friend, but the more I think about it, the more I realize holly came back into town just in the nick of time, just before I risked having a second date.

Right, now that we got that out of the way, we can have a strategy session. I was expecting to see valentin here, but–well, since he’s been beside your bed through this whole entire ordeal…

he’s not here.

[Sighs] He’s with laura and curtis and drew. They’ve–they’ve gone to find victor.

When ethan was victor’s captive, he persuaded his guards to play with cards with him. Ethan’s very good at cards. He can make any hand come out exactly the way he wants, and he let his marks win just enough that they’d keep playing… and talking, which is how he learned that victor plans to revive a technology that the cassadines developed in the ’80s.

You a quitter?

You know… maybe.

You a quitter? Why would you give up so easily?

There’s nothing to give up! I’m just gonna go back to doing what I do better than anybody else, and that’s besting robert in court, and he can have holly sutton if he wants.

What if he wants you?

Yeah.

You know, life is too short to stand on ceremony. If you feel something, say something.

It’s a mixed blessing, having my mother home with us.

[Laughs] Yes. My feelings are also mixed. It’s the blessing part I’m not exactly clear on.

It’s that island right there, right off the coast of greenland. That’s where we think victor is headed.

It’s a long shot, but that’s all we’ve got.

The wsb just wanted to tie it all up. As far as they were concerned, they got the diamond back. Case solved, except it wasn’T.

Well, the way dr. Navarro explained it, endometriosis develops when the tissues that usually line the inside of the uterus grow on the outside of the uterus. They’re usually non-cancerous, but these growths can cause painful periods, which I have definitely experienced.

And how long has this been going on?

I don’t know, a few months maybe. But mom, I mean, remember, I’ve always had bad cramps. But lately they’ve just gotten more and more intense.

Yes, I demonstrated to the shareholders and the market that elq was still strong. And then news came out about valentin’s death being a ploy, and that’s when the stock took yet another hit. It appears that the market doesn’t like the idea of a con man running the company.

But valentin didn’t fakehis own death because of elq. It’s not like he was embezzling money and then took off.

It doesn’t matter. With all the craziness and corruption that goes on on wall street these days, people are skittish. Once shareholders and financial partners lose faith in a company, that company’s days are numbered.

You have raised a very intelligent and courageous young woman. But what was trina thinking sneaking on to that boat like that?

She wasn’T. She wasn’t thinking. She was following. She was following spencer, following spencer into some shady situation, like a moth to a flame. And I’m so utterly terrified right now, I can’t even tell you. And I can’t go home, because curtis isn’t there. It makes it even more lonely. And I can’t work. All I can do is think about all the ways trina could be hurting.

I understand, portia. I do. But we need to keep in mind how smart and capable she is.

But not when it comes to spencer. I mean, she loses all common sense when it comes to him. How many times has he lied to her? When he first met her, he said that his name was victor, probably because he idolizes his great uncle victor.

He may have at the time, but he doesn’t any longer.

So trina managed to get a phone call out?

Amazingly, she called portia on a satellite phone that she found. Portia came out and flagged down jordan, laura, and me to let us listen on speakerphone. Trina even managed to give us the ship’s heading with laura’s help.

Well, that’s great. I mean, the heading narrows things down. But did she say anything about an exact location?

The gps locator was disabled, so we were unable to track the “haunted star” remotely. Trina heard some men coming, so she had to go. I told her to leave the phone there. Now, you know I hated telling her to do that. But, you know, if victor knew that one of his phones was missing, it would alert him that he had a stowaway.

No, that’s a good call.

Well, maybe, but I haven’t had any contact from trina since, and it’s driving me crazy. Laura convinced me not to storm the pcpd, so I’m just staying close here waiting for trina to reach out and manage another call to portia.

Wait, portia’s here?

Yeah, but it didn’t work. Talk to me, man. Where are you going with this?

Victor was hell-bent on getting you to remember something. I mean, according to you, he went to a lot of trouble.

Yeah, I think it was the main reason he put up with peter august for as long as he did, because peter was promising victor that he would deliver something that I was supposed to remember.

But could it lead to something that tells us where he’s headed? Anything at all?

Look, I get why you’re heading down this road. Trina might be your daughter. But I think you’re grasping at straws.

All I know is that victor wanted information about something called operation demeter.

Operation demeter. This means nothing to you?

I mean, I’m reasonably certain that it was a black op that I was involved in when I was a navy seal, but you know that time of my life I’ve got huge gaps. When I first found out that victor really wanted information about this operation demeter, I tried to remember. I tried to do everything. I-

I sat for hours going over my service records, although most of it was redacted. But I was just trying to piece together everything that was listed there, but I just couldn’t remember. I got nothing.

Damn. Ok. Ok. And you were involved in the plot to overthrow victor with valentin and anna, right?

I mean, yeah, just at the very end. But yeah.

Ok. Drew, I need you to tell me everything you know about victor cassadine.

Spencer has caused trina nonstop heartache, but now she’s vulnerable. Did trina tell you what happened after the wedding?

I know spencer pretty well, portia. And it’s true that he was once reckless and vindictive, entitled, petty, but now-

 

don’t tell me he’s a changed man.

Since he met trina, there’s been a shift in him.

Trina shouldn’t have to be spencer cassadine’s conscience.

No argument there. But this change that I’ve seen in spencer since he’s come back to port charles, it can be directly tied to trina.

And any pain trina had can be directly tied back to spencer.

I can’t argue that. If she chooses to be with spencer, I think that we all need to respect that, right? And you and trina may never reconcile if you keep badmouthing him.

And that might be a moot point. We may never reconcile if she doesn’t make it back.

Dad, no disrespect, but do you think maybe you’re overreacting? I mean, elq has had downturns in the past, and it’s always come out stronger.

I don’t overreact; the market does. And a good investor lives for this. Our stock drops, and shareholders get nervous and start selling. The next thing you know, in come the corporate raiders. The first sign of weakness, and the sharks start circling. I’m going to have to make some tough decisions to streamline, cut costs, but I really don’t want to have to fire thousands of employees to do it.

God, it’s that bad, huh? Well, what can we do?

Well, we have to reassure the market that elq is stable and strong. But valentin has yet to even talk to the press to explain his actions.

Well, that’s because anna nearly died. She’s been in the icu, and valentin hasn’t left her side.

I’m not asking him to hold a press conference, but he could put out a written statement. The longer he stays silent, the worse it looks, and he won’t even return my phone calls.

Dad, it’s not the first thing on his mind right now.

Well, it should be. Anna is being well taken care of at gh. Valentin is our ceo. The health and well-being of this company is his responsibility, and I thought he knew that. The quartermaines have always understood whether it’s grandfather or me or michael. We understand that to keep elq strong and stable, you need committed leadership. And I am starting to regret siding with valentin when michael and drew wanted to oust him.

I have never asked sonny to choose between me and his family. I never have, and I never will. I want him to go to that wedding, even if it’s without me.

It’s very noble. I’m sure sonny appreciates the sacrifice.

It’s not just that I’m missing my daughter’s wedding. But I’m missing what could be her last days, the daughter that I have never been able to really know, and that is your fault.

No wonder willow doesn’t want to be with you or around you. Instead of you facing that fact, you want to blame it all on me.

And victor thought you knew the location of the bunker?

you have to remember trina’s life depends on it.

Of course not. But if you told the truth about the dna test, willow would have gotten that bone marrow transplant months ago, and she’d already be cancer-free.

We didn’t know about willow’s diagnosis months ago, nina.

If willow knew that I was her mother, whether she accepted me or not, when the whole possibility of a bone marrow transplant came up, she would have come to me immediately, instead of waiting months and months through that farce that drew put everyone through looking for her birth parents. I was here all along.

I told you. The second I found out that willow had leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant, I told you you weren’t a match.

I wasn’t a match, but liesl, liesl is a match, and she would have gotten tested immediately. And this whole nightmare would have been done and over with.

I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize I had any more tears to cry.

And she’s principled, and I like that, just an amazing young woman. So imagine her keeping it together under those circumstances so focused and so brave. Drew, you know she had to be terrified.

Wait for it. So I’m down at the station, giving my standard spiel. And they bring out from the back this little man-boy, who throws his arms around me and says, “thank you, mob lawyer.”

I have never felt so appreciated in my entire legal career–

or so confused, or intrigued.

So sonny is nothing if not interesting.

So this explains the incident at the metro court.

I didn’t have a choice. I couldn’t stand the thought of being publicly incapacitated. And that was just in front of a bunch of undergrads. Imagine if it were friends and family. Imagine if it were my sons.

You know, I never thought about it like that, but you’re right. Representing sonny has been interesting. And over the years, I’ve actually liked a lot of the work that I’ve done.

Helping him and his lot flaunt the justice system.

I prefer the word “navigate.” You know who was genius at it? Jason. Setting me up, so that I could actually argue the law accurately to get him off, giving me just enough room so I could slide in and do my job.

And do it very well.

Thank you, kind sir. So, yes, representing sonny has gone from, I know you’re a mobster, and I will only participate in this tiny sliver of your world, to what is a fascinating interaction. But don’t get me wrong. I know where the line is, and I will not cross it because I don’t care how interesting it is, the hill doesn’t exist on which I would risk my legal career.

If donna and avery were older, it would be different. They would be able to navigate the line in the sand between you and sonny, just like dante and christina do.

But they’re kids, and they shouldn’t– they shouldn’t have to understand or make that choice.

And I know you want them in the wedding as much as I do. I love those girls. Not to mention, wiley would completely revolt if they weren’t there. Not that they wouldn’t come because of sonny.

No, I get it. It’s about setting an example for the future, and we should make it easier on them.

When we can, yeah. Sometimes that will be impossible, but in this case…

But things are– they’re getting a little bit better, and I am so thankful to my aunt liesl, and not only for agreeing to be willow’s donor, but also, she’s opened some channels of communication between us. That being said, there’s still a very wide, very deep gulf for us to navigate.

You know, the motor neurons degenerate and die, stop sending signals to the muscles. Eventually, your brain loses the ability to initiate and control voluntary movements.

Mm.

So there’s not–

no way to reverse the degeneration. My doctor keeps talking about supportive care, a term I find incredibly irritating. Basically, it means physical therapy, nutritional changes, meds that may or may not slow down the nerve damage. And when time comes, medications to help manage my symptoms. Time that seems to be approaching a lot faster than we thought it would.

Eventually, I’m going to lose control of my movement. And then, I will be entirely in the care of my sons. That’s why I haven’t told them yet. I just– I want them to go about living their lives for as long as possible before they have to deal with that burden. I figure that’s the least that I can do for them now. Before they have to do everything for me.

I cannot believe it’s all over.
