Susan: John black did an excellent job at coaching me. And, you know, I am very good with my hands. If you would have gotten here a little bit later, you know, we would have been out of here, no time.

Demon marlena: Mm-hmm. Hmm. That right, john? You thought the two of you could outwit me?

Susan: Little old mean so-and-so! Look, look.

[Susan hissing]

[Susan screaming]

Demon marlena: [Chuckles]

Roman: Looks like you could use it.

Abe: Thank you. You know, I had thought that I would be… sipping champagne with my new bride right about now. So much for the best laid plans, huh?

Roman: Yeah. Yeah.

Theo: The look on my dad’s face, how could paulina lie to him like that? And–and chanel? Hell of a time to come out with the truth.

Eli: I’m with you on that.

Theo: And now lani going to see paulina. You think that’s a good idea?

Eli: I sure as hell hope so.

Paulina: I–I was just coming to look for you, sweetheart. There’s so much I need to explain–

[Tense music]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Paulina: I vowed a long time ago that I was never ever gonna let anyone put a hand on me again. But after what I did to you, I suppose I deserved that.

Lani: Damn right you did! Do you have any idea how much damage you have caused? How you hurt and humiliated me?

Paulina: Yeah–

Lani: And not just me, so many other people!

Paulina: I have an idea.

Lani: I never thought I could be more angry with you than I was that day when we found out your real plans for this place. But I got to give you credit. You’ve really outdone yourself. In one fell swoop, you took away my brother, my mother, huh? And my father.

Paulina: Lani, I’m sorry.

Lani: So who is my father anyway, huh?

[Eerie music]

Demon marlena: Well, she’s full of surprises, isn’t she?

John: Aren’t you going after her?

Demon marlena: In these heels?

[Laughs] I always like to give people a little bit of hope… before I crush it.

[Eerie music]

[Laughing]

Susan: Help! Help! Help! Elvis! Johnny! Where is everybody? Where are you? Come on, elvis! Johnny? Oh, come on, please, someone, help me!

Johnny: What was that? Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Johnny: Hello! Anybody there? That’s weird. Could have sworn somebody just called my name.

Demon marlena: Bad, bad, bad little kitty. What am I gonna do with you? She got all the way to the mansion. Quite the little sprinter. If I hadn’t stopped her, she would’ve gotten to your grandson.

[Banging at door]

Johnny: Hey, gorgeous. Hey, were you just calling my name, uh, before you knocked?

Chanel: No. Why?

Johnny: Never mind. I’m just happy you’re here. I figured since you texted that you were going to your mom’s wedding, that I wouldn’t see you. Must be my lucky day.

Chanel: [Sighs] Not so lucky.

Johnny: Well, how was the wedding? Is it over already?

Chanel: Oh, it’s over, all right. And it was a total disaster. Because of me.

[Dramatic music]

Theo: Still sound asleep.

Eli: We’d have heard if they weren’T. Thanks for checking on them.

Theo: Kind of wish I was like one of those little ones, sleeping through this nightmare. Paulina’s their grandmother, which means that I’m not their uncle.

Eli: Technically, that’s true.

Theo: Eli, I totally get it if you want to pick a different godfather for jules.

Eli: What? Why would you say that?

Theo: Maybe you want someone who’s related to them.

Eli: Theo, you’re the best damn godfather my daughter will ever have. Okay? And nothing’s gonna change that. Blood or no blood.

[Dramatic music]

Roman: Look, you don’t have to talk about this if you don’t want to, but I just got to say kate and i are both a little confused. Is what chanel said at the church true? Paulina is lani’s mother, not tamara?

Abe: That is correct. And I am not lani’s father.

Roman: How is that possible?

Abe: It is a long story.

Paulina: Your dad, ray, he was so dangerous. That’s why I was so determined to protect you from him, determined that he didn’t even know you existed. So the plan was for my mama to keep me hidden from him until I gave birth. And–and tammy, she would raise you as her child.

Lani: So she agreed to the lie?

Paulina: Well, it wasn’t that much of a lie. Tammy, she loved you as if she had given birth to you herself. She just–she just had one condition she just insisted upon.

Lani: Which was?

Paulina: After she made the commitment, you were to be her daughter, her daughter alone. I had to promise that you would never know the truth.

Lani: And that’s one promise you actually kept. Want your clothes to smell freshly washed

John: So, honey, you said you were off to corrupt souls and destroy lives, tell me that didn’t happen.

Demon marlena: I don’t like to brag, but it went even better than I had hoped. The destruction of abe’s wedding. But enough about me, we have some unfinished business here.

John: Eh, not in the mood.

Demon marlena: I’m not even sure that matters. You know me well enough to know that I never leave a job half done. There’s no sense in you resisting, john. I will have your soul. And this part should be pretty entertaining. Let me just slip into something a little more comfortable.

[Eerie music]

Johnny: Here you go.

Chanel: Thank you.

Johnny: It can’t be that bad.

Chanel: It’s worse.

Johnny: Okay. Tell me about it.

Chanel: Okay. You–you remember how you left me with your grandmother this morning?

Johnny: Yeah. Of course I do.

Chanel: Well, she and i were talking about how my mom had chosen lani to be her matron of honor. And dr. Evans told me that she knew why and why my mom lied about it. Especially that.

Johnny: What do you mean?

Chanel: It was because of a secret she’s been carrying around for years. Johnny, lani is my mom’s daughter too.

[Dramatic music]

Theo: It’s funny. When I found out that I had a sister, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Brandon wasn’t around, so I pretty much always had dad to myself growing up.

Eli: You didn’t want to share, huh?

Theo: Pretty much acted like a spoiled brat.

Eli: So what made you come around?

Theo: Lani did. I was being bullied in school, the autism. And she was not about to let that continue. I mean, she was fierce.

Eli: That’s my wife.

Theo: Hmm. She told me that the other kids were the problem, not me. She gave me confidence, helped me to believe in myself. And she stood up for me like–

Eli: Like a big sister.

Paulina: I was so desperate, I agreed to tammy’s terms. And I was so sure that I made the right decision, but then I went into labor and–

Lani: What? Go on.

Paulina: I gave birth to you in mama’s home because a hospital was too risky. The same midwife that delivered tammy and me delivered you right on mama’s bed. She put you in my arms, and I just looked– I looked into your beautiful eyes and… I just realized I couldn’t let you go. You were my baby girl. I just couldn’t give you up. Not even to my sister. I told my mama I wasn’t going through with it.

Lani: But you did.

Paulina: I did.

Lani: Why?

Paulina: Big mama. Big mama, she made me realize that the best way I could be a mother to you was to keep you safe from ray. So I agreed to the plan. But not–not before I convinced that midwife to cut a lock of your hair for me. Lord knows we didn’t– we didn’t cut a child’s hair before their first birthday, but she looked at me, she saw my breaking heart and she agreed. Just that sweet, sweet lock, just kept carrying it around with me, having that tiny part of you with me, that gave me the strength to just put you in tammy’s arms and tell you that she was your mama. Woman: I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Roman: Wow. That is quite a tale, abraham.

Abe: If only that’s all it was.

Roman: Yeah. Giving lani up like that had to be really painful for paulina.

Abe: Defending her?

Roman: No. No, not at all. I’m just saying that it sounds like she was really caught in a–in a really terrible situation.

Abe: She was. And I–I feel for her. Being in an abusive relationship and having to give up your child. And for her to come to town after all these years and build a relationship with lani, build a relationship with me, knowing this secret could change all of our lives.

Roman: I do wonder why she didn’t just stay away, leave well enough alone.

Abe: I don’t know. I don’t know. But the kicker is that I was dumb enough to trust her. Again. And after what happened with the horton town square, I knew exactly the kind of lies that paulina was capable of. And I–I still–still gave her another chance. Just exactly how stupid could I be.

Roman: Abe, you weren’t stupid. You were in love. You loved paulina. She loved you.

Abe: Then why didn’t she tell me the truth?

Paulina: As hard as it was to give you up, I knew I was doing the right thing. Tamara, she could give you what I couldn’t, a stable home and a mother who loved you. But as for me, I vowed that I would never be in this position again. Mmm. So despite the fact that I was a young, single black woman with hardly any resources, I started building my business. I made connections. I learned the ins and outs of real estate. I made sure I did whatever I had to do to make sure that I never would depend on a man or anybody else for that matter. But the one thing, the one thing that I always wanted, the thing that I dreamt about more nights than I can count was to be a mama to you, the one who combed your hair, who heard your prayers, who told you stories and rocked you to sleep.

Lani: I had a mother for that.

Paulina: Of course. Well, of course, you did. Well, tammy, she loved you with everything she had.

[Lani sniffles] That’s why she was so protective of you. And I respected that. I did. But what pulled me to you was I just wanted to be more than your crazy aunt paulina. I wanted us to spend time together, just–just the two of us, where we could–so I could just be a mama to you.

Lani: Hmm. Like when you promised me that trip when I was eight to paris and then you never showed up.

Paulina: Yeah. Oh, boy. When mama and tammy found out about that, boy, I caught hell. They wouldn’t even let me near you so I could talk to you and let you down gently.

Lani: So this is their fault?

Paulina: No. No, no. It’s not their fault. It’s my fault for wanting something that I just could not have, for letting down and breaking my little daughter’s heart.

Johnny: Lani is your sister? And my grandmother told you that? I mean, how–how does she even know something like that?

Chanel: My mom told her.

Johnny: Like as her shrink? What about the whole doctor-patient confidentiality thing?

Chanel: Well, she did say she that could lose her license if anyone found out that she told me, but she saw how upset I was and she–she wanted to help me understand what was going on.

Johnny: But still, I mean, even if it was to help you, breaking confidentiality like that, that doesn’t sound like my grandmother.

[Eerie music]

Marlena: John? John!

Evil kristen: Hi! Aw! So you ready to pick up where we left off? On the outside, I looked fine.

Roman: You know what? Maybe–maybe paulina didn’t tell you the truth because she knew what it would cost you and lani. Maybe she was just trying to protect you.

Abe: Well, that’s exactly what she said. It’s a nice way to make herself the hero of the story.

Roman: I’m so sorry, abe.

Abe: She watched us, lani, theo, me. She watched us celebrate and support each other, love each other, and she did the one thing that she promised me that she would never do, she lied to me about the most important thing in my life, my family. Now how am I supposed to get past that?

Lani: So all the gifts, the pony, were they because you gave me up? What, you were trying to atone?

Paulina: That was just my way of trying to express my love for you. And yes, yes, trying to make up for that terrible choice I made for giving you up.

Lani: And the kids’ college education, was that just another “make-up” gift?

Paulina: Well, when I heard that my baby was having twin babies, well, I tried to stay away but I couldn’T. I just thought that I could be there for them and hold them like I couldn’t hold you and be a part of their lives like I couldn’t be a part of yours.

Lani: Right, so you wanted to be a part of my life, a part of my kids’ lives without ever considering telling us who you really were, that you were my mother, their grandmother! My god! How could you– how could you not think that we needed to know something so important, so life changing? How could you think that it was just okay for you to keep this big lie going? Oh, you know why? I know why. It’s because what you want was always more important than the truth.

Chanel: I’m just glad someone cared enough to tell me the truth. My mom sure as hell doesn’T.

Johnny: Is that why you decided to go to the wedding? To confront her?

Chanel: Not at all. Dr. Evans told me I couldn’t tell anyone.

Johnny: Because she’d get in trouble?

Chanel: Yeah. I didn’t even want to go to the wedding, I was so upset. But she told me that I had to do the right thing. I had to show up for my mom.

Johnny: So you went to the wedding, you weren’t gonna say anything, but then you– you did?

Chanel: You know that part in the ceremony where they ask if anyone knows why the couple shouldn’t get married?

Johnny: Yeah.

Chanel: Well, when that moment came, I just felt compelled to say something.

Johnny: “Compelled”?

Chanel: I looked up at dr. Evans and she was looking back at me. And it was like it was just the two of us in the room and she was looking at me like she could see into my soul. And it was like she was urging me to tell the truth.

Johnny: That’s weird.

Chanel: What’s even weirder was that she was the one that told me I had to keep it a secret.

Johnny: So was she upset that you told everyone or what?

Chanel: She didn’t seem upset at all. And I was careful not to let on that she was the one who told me because I didn’t want her to lose her license to practice medicine. I didn’t want to wreck her life. I just wrecked everyone else’S.

Johnny: Nah, come here. Come here.

Marlena: [Strains] I’ve got to get out of here. There’s got to be a way.

[Groans] Oh. My phone! My phone.

[Straining]

[Dramatic music]

Evil kristen: Do you remember where we left off yesterday?

John: Um. No.

Evil kristen: Well, it was right about here. Oh, don’t be like that. We connected yesterday. I know we did. We talked about how we met, john, how I saved you and then you saved me. It was inevitable that we would fall so deeply in love with each other.

John: Oh, just stop it.

Evil kristen: Why would I want to stop? I’m just getting to the good part. We ended up at the horton cabin, you and me in our own little world. We made love for the very first time.

[Eerie music]

That night was incredible, wasn’t it? It was you and me and the storm. It was so passionate. It was so magical. You do remember, don’t you? Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Roman: Listen, abe, I’m really sorry that you are not lani’s biological father or those babies’ grandfather. But come on, man, you got to know, that doesn’t change anything. Yes, paulina lied about how you’re related. But the way you feel about them, how much you love them, that’s real.

[Sighs] I just hate to see you in such pain. Is there anything I can do?

Abe: You’ve listened. And I thank you for that.

Roman: Can I get you another beer? Call someone?

Abe: No, no. Thank you. I– I think I’d just like to be alone.

Roman: Understood. All right. Holler if you need me.

Abe: [Sighs]

Theo: Dad has always been this rock for everyone. The strongest, the wisest, bravest. And his rock has always been family. And paulina has just blown that all to hell. He may have survived that bullet wound a few weeks ago, but this will break his heart. I should find him, let him know that I’m there for him, we all are.

Eli: What was I saying earlier about jules not being able to have a better godfather than you? This is why, because of the way you take care of your family.

Theo: You’ll let me know how lani’s doing?

Eli: I will.

[Dramatic music]

Paulina: Lani, I know–I know it seems like the only reason I kept this from you was because I was trying to protect myself from the consequences of my actions, but believe me, ever since I came to town, I’ve wanted to tell you I was your mama.

Lani: And something always stopped you. How convenient.

Paulina: No, no. No, it wasn’t like that. See, when I wanted to tell you, my mother, she swooped into town and shut me down. And then when I was about to tell you everything, then your father, he got shot–

Lani: He’s not my father.

Paulina: Abe is not your biological father. But he’s your daddy in every other way. I saw your grief that night and how worried you were that you might lose him. And I just couldn’t bring myself to add to your pain.

Lani: That’s when you lied that what you wanted to talk about was me being your matron of honor.

Paulina: Yes.

Lani: And did you think about what it would do to chanel, how much it would hurt her?

Paulina: Well, hurting my baby girl, that was the last thing I wanted to do. But in that moment, I was thinking of my other girl. And then I realized, well, I couldn’t just destroy your relationship with your father and your brother.

Lani: You destroyed it anyway.

Paulina: There are no words to say how sorry I am, if I could just do it all over again, if I could just be stronger, be wiser. But honey, I was convinced that telling you this lie all these years that I was being the best mama I could be. And that’s all I ever wanted was just to be a mother to you.

Lani: You are not my mother. And you never will be.

[Dramatic music]

Johnny: All you did was tell the truth, okay? You can’t control how other people are gonna respond to that. So you can’t let it get you down.

Chanel: It’s kind of hard not to.

Johnny: Well, I think that you are incredibly brave.

Chanel: You’re just saying that to make me feel better.

Johnny: No, I’m saying that ’cause it’s true.

Chanel: No one has ever called me brave before.

Johnny: What about perfect?

Chanel: Oh, hell no.

[Both laugh]

Johnny: Well, then clearly nobody knows you as well as I do.

Chanel: You still like me?

Johnny: Chanel, I’m crazy about you, the way you work so hard, how you always choose to do the right thing, how you can look at me, and it’s like the only thing in the world I give a damn about is making you happy.

[Dramatic music]

Chanel: Let’s go upstairs.

Johnny: You sure?

Chanel: I’m sure.

Johnny: Okay.

Evil kristen: You remember that first perfect night, don’t you? And then the next morning we woke up, the storm had passed. It was a gorgeous day. I told you that I had that fantasy of us taking a shower together. You made it come true. And then you know what you did, you made breakfast for me, you big softy.

[Eerie music]

And it was so sad, our perfect time in eden had to come to an end. But despite everything that happened, you still loved me. You still wanted me. Admit it. You still do.

[Tense music]

Marlena: Ahh, yes.

[Straining and panting] Oh, yes. No signal? Please, god. Please, please.

[Phone rings] My nunormal?

[Romantic music]

[Somber music]

>>Lani: [Sighs]

[Sobs]

Evil kristen: As upset as you were to find out that I was stefano’s daughter, you couldn’t walk away ’cause you knew my heart and my soul and my body. You were mine. I was yours. And I remember every single time that we made love. I know you do too.

[Eerie music]

Wouldn’t you love to feel that alive again?

I mean, how long has it been since you’ve given into that kind of passion, since you’ve let yourself lose control, forgot about everyone and everything? What do you say, john? Why don’t you take me right here, right now, while all my dead relatives watch?

Paulina: [Giggles] Well, smile, baby. Mm-hmm.

[Sighs contentedly] Aww.

Marlena: Welcome, everyone. We are gathered here today, in the presence of god, as well as family and friends, to join together this man, abraham carver, and this woman, paulina price, in holy matrimony. Marriage is an honorable estate, not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, soberly, and with god’s blessing. If anyone knows of just cause why these two may not be joined in holy matrimony, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.

[Sinister music]

Paulina: Marlena? Marlena, what are you waiting for? Let’s get the show on the road.

Marlena: [Chuckles] Of course.

Chanel: Wait. I have something to say.

Susan: Help! The devil locked us in here! Come on. He’s out there running amok in salem. Come on, help!

John: Susan.

Susan: Ooh! John black, you’re awake. Ooh.

John: Susan.

Susan: Yeah? Now, I know you’re awake, john. What is it?

John: I need–I need you to do something for me.

John: Shut! The hell! Up!

Shawn: Oh. Hey there, counselor.

Belle: Detective. I just came from seeing my new client and thought I’d stop by and say hi.

John: No, I’m not possessed. I’m just annoyed.

John: At the risk of sounding rude, I have been locked in here forever, and the sound of you pounding and screaming like that is making my head explode! I’m surprised you haven’t woken the dead by now.

Susan: Oh. Oh. The dead. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Oh, we’re in here.

[Gasps] Oh. Oh.

John: What are you doing?

Susan: I can feel them. How about you? Yeah, the poor, unfortunate souls. I mean, they have been laid to rest in here.

John: Well, they’re not gonna be any help to us now. And if someone doesn’t come to save us soon, I’m afraid we’re gonna join their ranks.

Paulina: Um, honey, if this is about you not being maid of honor, well, I–I thought we talked this all out together. And I told you I only asked lani because–

Chanel: I know damn well why you asked lani.

Paulina: You know what, honey? You know what?

Chanel: You asked her because she’s not really your niece. She’s your daughter!

[Dramatic music]

Lani: Chanel, what are you talking about?

Chanel: I’m sorry, lani, but it’s true.

Lani: No, look. I–I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Your aunt tamara is my mother.

Paulina: Chanel, sit down. This is my wedding.

Susan: Oh, john black! You listen to me. You better not be giving up. Mm-mm-mm! You’re gonna let satan have dr. Marlena’s body? No. No. To that, I say, no siree, bob. Mm-mm-mm! Because I know the horror of being possessed by the devil himself. And god only knows what I did, what sins I committed, I mean, while the prince of darkness had possession of my body.

John: So you don’t remember?

Susan: Well, okay. I do remember. I remember waking up from a very vivid dream about being tormented by hairballs. And then–oh! And then, I– I confronted the devil. And then, nothing.

John: Yeah. Well, then consider yourself lucky.

Susan: Why? What–what did I do under the spell of satan, huh? John black, you tell me right now, ’cause if I’m gonna die in this crypt, I need to know what mortal transgressions I committed so that I can confess my sins to god and ask for his forgiveness.

John: All right! If you have such an urgent need to know, you tried to seduce me.

Susan: Oh! Golly! Oh.

Abe: Chanel, who told you this? Who told you that paulina is lani’s mother?

[Tense music]

Marlena: I’m sorry. You can’t say anything about it.

Chanel: Well, what if I, uh, I don’t reveal my source? Like, if I don’t tell anyone who told me?

Marlena: No, no, no, no. Paulina would know. And then, she would feel betrayed, and then, I could lose my license.

Chanel: It doesn’t matter where I heard it or who told me. It’s the god’s honest truth. I know it is. Tell them, mother. Tell everyone how you’ve been lying for all these years.

Lani: Aunt paulina?

Paulina: Well, I hate to say this, but my daughter– my only daughter, chanel– is lying.

Abe: Why would chanel make up something like that?

Paulina: Because she’s trying to hurt me, or because of the maid-of-honor snub, or because I cut her off when she first came to town.

Lani: Chanel, tell me the truth.

Chanel: I am, lani. I’ll put my hand on a bible in this church and swear to god I’m not lying to you.

Paulina: Don’t do this.

Chanel: Mother.

Paulina: Trust me when I tell you, let this go. Whoever told you was mistaken. You’re wrong about this.

Olivia: No, she isn’T.

Paulina: Mama?

Olivia: I cannot let my daughter bear false witness against both of her daughters in the house of god.

Lani: What are you saying?

Olivia: I’m saying chanel is right. Tamara is not your mother. Paulina is.

John: You know what?

Susan: Dr. Marlena is my friend, and she is my hero, and I would never willingly betray her.

John: And–and you didn’T. You didn’t, because it wasn’t you. He transformed you.

John: He transformed you into someone else.

Lani: I don’t understand. How can my mother not be my mother?

Olivia: Oh, my sweet lani. We made a decision, as a family, all those years ago.

Lani: To give paulina’s baby to her sister to raise as her own?

Olivia: We thought we were doing the right thing.

Lani: But if tamara is not really my mother, that means that–

Belle: So my mom convinced julie to sign this document, and it waives her authority to make any medical decisions as doug’s spouse and gives it all solely to my mom. So, I mean, I guess I could argue that julie just didn’t know what she was doing when she signed her rights away, right? She was distraught, she was desperate, and didn’t think it through.

Shawn: Well, and then you’d have to cast doubt on your mother’s professional judgment.

Belle: Right, which normally I wouldn’t dream of doing, but lately, her judgment just, I don’t know, seems off. And not just in this case.

Shawn: What else?

Belle: Well, for starters, she dressed as the devil on halloween. And then, the other day, the way she treated that poor cat.

Susan: Oh! I wish I stayed as a little kittycat. Instead, I made you cheat on your saint of a wife, and I am now eternally damned.

John: No, you’re not, because I didn’T.

Susan: You didn’t what?

John: Cheat on my wife. But the devil made it clear that he’s not giving up, and he still intends to use you so I will betray marlena. You see, he needs to corrupt her soul so he can completely possess her.

Susan: So he’s gonna come back here for me?

John: Yeah, he’s gonna come back here. I’m afraid so.

Susan: [Yelps] Help! Help! The devil is coming after me. Oh, my god!

Lani: [Sobbing] I don’t understand any of this. My whole life–

[Voice cracks] My whole life is a lie.

Eli: Why don’t we go talk in private?

Kate: You okay?

Roman: I just feel so bad for lani and abe, for this to happen on his wedding day.

Kate: Do you want to go find him?

Roman: No. I–I know abe. He’s gonna want to be alone to process this. He knows I’m there for him when he’s ready.

Chanel: I’m sorry I ruined the wedding.

Roman: We’re not the ones you need to apologize to.

Theo: You didn’t have to do this, chanel.

Chanel: Yeah, but my mom was lying to abe and lani.

Theo: It’s my dad’s wedding day, and you made it about you because you were feeling upset that you didn’t get picked as maid of honor.

Chanel: You think that’s what this is about?

Theo: I think you wanted to make yourself the center of attention, and you didn’t care who you hurt.

Chanel: That’s not true!

Theo: I always knew that you were a self-centered brat, but I never thought your damn selfishness would destroy our family.

Lani: [Sobbing]

Eli: We’re gonna deal with this, whatever it is.

Lani: I don’t even know how to process what just happened. Like, how can my dad not be my dad?

Eli: Did you ever, you know, have a test after you found him?

Lani: No. My mom, she– she told me he was my father, and I believed her.

Eli: Of course you did. And why would she lie?

Lani: I just–I felt so lucky to have a dad that I didn’t even question it. I couldn’t have asked for a better dad, and now–

Eli: Lani, listen. This does not have to change anything.

Lani: What do you mean? It changes everything.

Paulina: Abraham, you can’t outrun me, you know. It’s hard to be a runaway groom walking with a cane.

Abe: Do you think this is a joke?

Paulina: No, no. Of course not. I just want to talk.

Abe: You lied to me. You lied to my–

Paulina: Lani. She will always, always be your daughter.

Abe: No, she’s not. She never was. You have cost me the most important thing in my life.

Roman: [Sighs]

Kate: I’m telling you now, I just never trusted that woman, from day one. When paulina came to town, I just didn’t like her.

Roman: Yeah, but we still don’t know the whole story.

Kate: She lied to abe. He’s better off without her, roman.

Roman: Yeah, but you’re still mad because paulina beat you out of that lease in the square.

Kate: Yeah, yeah. You’re damn right I am, because she tricked abe. She tricked him into changing the zoning so she could tear the place down.

Roman: That was a dirty trick, yes.

Kate: Yeah, yeah. And the whole town started to turn against her because of that, but abe, with his big heart, forgives her, and then everyone forgives her. And–and now–

Roman: And now, she broke his heart all over again.

Kate: Yeah.

Paulina: Please let me explain.

Abe: Explain what? You’ve been lying to me ever since the day we met about what matters most to me.

Paulina: And I’m so sorry.

Abe: Uh, do you understand? Do you understand what it meant to me to find lani so late in life? To have a daughter like lani, it’s a big part of who I am as a man.

Paulina: And it was a big part of the reason that I fell for you.

Abe: Well, you made me fall for you too. Head over heels. But the difference was I was honest with you. About everything. But you kept silent and let me give you my heart, knowing how I felt about your daughter, knowing–

[Voice cracks] Knowing that I loved her as my own.

Paulina: I never meant to hurt you.

Abe: Then why did you? How could you walk down the aisle to marry me with lani as your matron of honor, knowing that this was just based on a myth?

Paulina: No. No, abe. No. What I feel for you, that’s real.

Abe: If you truly loved me, you could never keep this kind of secret from me. Your love is like everything else. It’s just one big, damn lie.

Paulina: No. No, it isn’T. It isn’t, abe. I swear to you, I wanted to tell both you and lani the truth, but I couldn’T. I just–I didn’t have a choice.

Abe: Of course you did. Of course you did. You chose to give her up, and I didn’t have that choice today. I lost my daughter. I lost my daughter because you kept the secret to cover your guilt.

Paulina: No. No, I didn’t keep it for me, abe. I kept it for you, and I kept it for lani.

Lani: [Exhales sharply] All those years growing up without a father. I would go to the park and watch all the little girls play with their daddies, and I didn’t have anyone to push me on the swing or anyone to play catch with me.

Eli: I know that must have been hard.

Lani: And I love my mom. I do, but she wasn’t always there either. Like, I taught myself how to–how to ride a bike, how to stand up to a bully, and how to build a sandcastle. And I missed out on all of those father-daughter moments that you are gonna have with jules. And then, I came here, to salem, and…I found a father and I found a brother. A family.

Eli: An amazing family.

Lani: And now, they’re not mine. They’re not my family. Abe is not my father, and theo is not my brother. It’s just me. It is just me. It is just–

[Sobbing]

Chanel: Abe had a right to know that his bride was keeping this secret from him.

Theo: And your mother was wrong to keep it, but why out it this way? Instead of setting fire to the wedding, why not try to protect the people you love?

Marlena: Of course. No, I understand that. I was just thinking that it’s been difficult for everybody today.

Chanel: She’s right, big mama. There’s nothing for us to do here.

[Sinister music]

Demon marlena: I think my work here is done. I do love destroying a good wedding.

Theo: Did you say something, dr. Evans?

Marlena: No, no. Not a thing.

[Eerie music]

Kate: Oh! What’s this?

Roman: Chowder.

Kate: I know what it is. I served it here for over a year. I mean, what is all this?

Roman: Well, you said the word, we went on our first date. At least our first date this time around.

Kate: Yeah, some date.

Roman: Yeah. We didn’t get a chance to eat, so I am officially announcing, even though the wedding is over, this date is not.

Kate: [Chuckles]

Roman: Why are you looking at me like that?

Kate: Because I’m thinking. I’m thinking that you and abe are really cut from the same cloth. You’re both good guys. You both deserve to be happy.

Roman: Is this your way of warning me that I can’t trust you either?

Kate: You know who I am, roman.

Roman: Maybe better than you know yourself.

Kate: That doesn’t scare you?

Roman: No, not at all. Uh-uh. You are worth the risk.

Kate: I hope so. You think abe’s gonna be okay? And lani?

Roman: Well, I think they’re gonna need a whole lot of support from all of the people who love ’em if they’re gonna save that family.

Eli: Hey, you’re not alone. You got me, jules, carver. And, baby, I am positive that abe– you’re not gonna lose him, and you’re not gonna lose theo.

Lani: But it won’t be the same.

Eli: Why not? I mean, I didn’t have my biological father, okay, but the father that I did have, he loved me. And that’s what mattered most. And I know that abe loves you. He’s your father in every way that counts, and he will always be that.

Lani: How is it that you always know the right thing to say to make me feel better?

Eli: It’s my job.

Lani: And you’re right. I’m not cutting abe out of my heart. I couldn’t if I wanted to. But things will change, whether we like it or not, because of her.

Eli: Hey, we don’t know the whole truth yet.

Lani: No, we don’T. But I need to, and I need to know why.

Eli: So go find out. Go get the truth from paulina.

Paulina: Remember when I told you about that boyfriend I had all those years ago? How possessive he was? How he abused me? That man was lani’s father.

Abe: I see.

Paulina: When I got pregnant, I didn’t tell him because I knew, if he knew, he’d latch onto that child and onto me, and he’d just hold on forever. So it was my mama’s idea to keep me hidden from him, until I gave birth, and then just give my little baby girl to my sister.

Abe: And tamara agreed to that?

Paulina: Well, she was ready to be a mother. We made it work. But I had no idea that, all these years later, you would just assume you were lani’s father and that tammy, she would just go along with it.

Abe: So you’re saying that this was your mother’s fault or tamara’s?

Paulina: No, abe. I’m not saying that at all. Believe me. I blame myself plenty. Ultimately, it was my choice, and I’ve had to live with that every day, since that little girl was born.

Abe: Until today.

Paulina: Especially today. Oh, I’ve lived a very exciting life, abe. I am. I made a lot of money, I traveled the world, but not a day–not a day went by that I didn’t miss lani and imagine the kind of life that we could have had together. But when I came to salem and I saw you with her and I saw how happy you were, i knew I’d made the right choice. I protected my daughter from a very bad man, and she ended up getting the very good father that she deserved. So yes, I will apologize for all those lies and the way that I hurt you both, but I won’t– I won’t apologize for the way it turned out.

Abe: So now, you’re coming clean. Now, who’s that supposed to be for? Me? Lani? Or just you?

Paulina: Abraham–

Abe: You can tell yourself all the lies you want. You have to forgive me, because I am not going to listen anymore.

[Somber music]

Kate: Thank you for the chowder. This date didn’t go exactly the way I thought it would, but I am going to give you a chance to make it up to me the next time.

Roman: So there will be a second date?

Kate: Okay.

Roman: Abraham. Can I get you something?

Abe: Just a friend.

Roman: You came to the right place.

Eli: Hey.

Theo: Is lani okay?

Eli: Not really.

Theo: I want to talk to her. I want to tell her that she is still my sister, no matter what.

Eli: I told her. There’s something she has to handle first.

Theo: Where’d she go?

Eli: She went to confront the truth.

Paulina: [Exhales sharply]

[Melancholic music]

Chanel: [Sighs] Do you hate me, big mama, for ruining the wedding?

Olivia: Did you do what you believed was right?

Chanel: I–I thought so.

Olivia: Well, then you’ve got nothing to feel sorry about, have you?

Chanel: Big mama, why are you looking at me like that?

Olivia: It was that headshrinker, wasn’t it? Told you to blow up the wedding too, didn’t she?

Chanel: What makes you say that?

Olivia: Oh, child, I’ve been around long enough to know when the devil’s got somebody’s tongue.

Belle: All right, julie. I’ll be in touch soon. You just hang in there. Okay.

Shawn: So what did you decide?

Belle: I decided to take your grandmother’s case.

Shawn: So you’re taking your mom to court?

Belle: And let’s just pray to god she sees the light.

[Sighs]

Susan: John black, it’s not working. I can’t do it.

John: Yes, you can. You’re doing great, susan. Just don’t give up.

Susan: Well, I mean, I know my fingers are nimble. It’s just this lock is just so rusty. It’s gonna take a miracle. You know, like when the angel of the lord came down to st. Peter’s cell, and he–

[Door unlocks]

John: Susan?

Susan: Did you hear that? I think I heard a click. Did you hear a click, john black?

John: Susan?

Susan: Huh?

John: Try the door.

Susan: Oh, okay. I’m gonna try the door.

Kate: This is so amazing. Couple of days ago, we didn’t know if abe was gonna live or die, and now, we’re going to his wedding.

Roman: You know what else is amazing? You get more beautiful every day.

Kate: I hardly that’s true.

Roman: No, that is true. But you never could take a compliment. Not from me anyway.

Kate: Okay, fine. I’ll take it. I’ll take it. What about you with that smile that’s always just a little bit naughty but kind? And every time I see it, makes my heart melt.

[Elevator chimes]

Steve: Hey, baby.

Kayla: Oh, no. You didn’t get my text.

Steve: No. Oh! My phone’s been on vibrate. I’m sorry.

Kayla: Well, I’m sorry you had to come down here to pick me up, but I can’t go. I was called in for emergency surgery. I can’t go to the wedding.

Steve: Oh, no. Well, that’s too bad. Well, maybe you can come by later.

Kayla: I doubt it, but I will certainly try. But in any case, will you please apologize to abe and paulina for me? Give ’em my love.

Steve: I’ll do that. Something else I’m gonna do when I’m at that wedding.

Marlena: Chanel? Did you hear what I said?

Marlena: Oh, this must be so confusing for you.

Chanel: I am confused. So you’re telling me that lani is not my cousin? She’s my sister?

Marlena: Yes. Paulina and lani are mother and daughter.

Lani: Auntie p, I’m confused. You told chanel that asking me to be your matron of honor was a spontaneous decision, one that you made after my dad was shot when we found out that he was gonna be okay?

Paulina: That was a wonderful moment, wasn’t it?

Lani: Yes, but that’s not the moment that you decided to ask me to stand up for you. You came to talk to me about that the day before. Don’t you remember? You said you had something important to discuss with me, and then eli came in with the news about my dad.

Paulina: Eli. Right.

Lani: And then the next day at the hospital, I asked you what you wanted to talk to me about, and you said that–

Paulina: I lied.

[Soft orchestration]

Abe: So what do you mean? I mean, this is a new suit. Is my tie too wide?

Theo: Your clothes are fine, dad. The problem is that ugly-ass hospital cane of yours.

Abe: Oh, yeah, well, paulina doesn’t like it either. But what do you want me to do? I’m still unsteady. I mean, the last thing I want to do is wipe out walking down the aisle at my own wedding.

Theo: Well, it’s a good thing your best man’s got you covered. Be right back.

Lani: You lied?

Paulina: Yes.

Lani: Auntie p, I don’t understand. After everything that happened with price town, you promised me that you would never lie to me again. Now you’re saying you broke that promise?

Paulina: No. No, baby. I didn’t lie to you. I lied to chanel.

Chanel: How is this even possible?

Marlena: I know it’s a lot to process.

Chanel: So my mom had an affair with abe when he was dating my aunt?

Marlena: No. No. Your mother didn’t meet abe until she came to salem. Lani’s father is a guy named ray.

Chanel: So abe isn’t lani’s father?

Marlena: No, he’s not.

Chanel: But my mom I also lani’s mom?

Marlena: And that’s why she chose her to be her matron of honor.

Chanel: It all makes sense now. Of course lani is her daughter. Oh, my god. My mother has been lying to me my entire life. Doesn’t your family deserve the best?

Kate: Okay. Well, I guess I’ll see you at st. Luke’S.

Roman: See you there. Unless you want me to give you a lift.

Kate: No, no. I have my own car.

Roman: Well, I know that, but we’re going to the same place. Why not go together? What?

Kate: Okay, so as much as I appreciate the offer, I just don’t want you to get the wrong idea.

Roman: What? Like it’s a date?

Kate: Exactly.

Eli: Okay. There we go.

Olivia: Oh, eli, it was so sweet of you to pick me up at the airport and bring me to the chapel.

Eli: No. My pleasure. We’re just sorry that tamara couldn’t make it to the wedding. We were hoping she’d be able to reschedule her tour.

Olivia: Tour shmour. That’s not the reason tamara’s not coming to paulina’s wedding.

Eli: Hmm, then what is?

Paulina: Chanel put me on the spot when she asked me why I chose you over her. I blurted the first thing that came into my head.

Lani: That it was a spur-of-the-moment decision when truthfully you were planning to ask me all along.

Paulina: Well, I couldn’t tell chanel that. I knew it would hurt her feelings.

Lani: Chanel is tough.

Paulina: She acts tough. Your cousin actually is very fragile, and it’s not like I completely forgot about her. She has a very important role in the wedding. She’s walking me down the aisle.

Lani: Auntie, can I ask you something?

Paulina: Of course. Anything.

Lani: Why would you ask me to stand up for you and not your own daughter?

Chanel: This explains so much about how mama sees lani compared to me.

Marlena: And how is that?

Chanel: She’s together. I’m a mess. She’s a role model. And I’m a cautionary tale.

Marlena: Has it always been like that?

Chanel: Not at all. Giving me the best of everything always made mama happy and proud, until we got to salem. Now, all of a sudden, I’m this freeloading, gold-digging embarrassment who needs to grow up and get a job.

Marlena: And do you think that lani had anything to do with that?

Chanel: Of course.

Marlena: That hardly seems fair. Paulina spoils you your entire life and then suddenly turns around and belittles you.

Chanel: Oh, it was worse than that. She cut me off. Oh, but lani–she gets a fat check for the twins’ college tuition. And I was all, “why is mama being so generous to these babies that she barely even knows?”

Marlena: Because they’re her grandchildren.

Chanel: Like I said, it all makes sense now.

[Both chuckling] And I’m glad that you gave up on that idea about postponing the wedding until I made a complete recovery.

Eli: Hey, grandma.

Julie: Eli. Well, shouldn’t you be getting ready for the wedding of the year? Oh, excuse me, the wedding of the century?

Eli: Oh, well, you know I’m the king of low maintenance.

Eli: Well, then I guess I get it from my gorgeous grandmother…

Marlena: Thank you. Hope i didn’t come in a bad time, but I wanted to update you on the conversation that I had with susan and also to bring you that.

Ciara: Oh, that’s so sweet. Thank you.

Ben: No, it’s a fine time. Did susan say anything else about the evil presence she felt around our baby?

Marlena: Yes, she did.

[Dramatic music]

Abe: Well, kayla tells me that she has never had a patient that had quicker recovery.

Paulina: Well, of course. Would I marry anyone less than exceptional?

Abe: [Chuckles] Well, I had exceptional motivation. I’m feeling no pain. Must be my exquisite company.

Paulina: More likely like the pain pills.

Abe: Oh, I didn’t take any today. I’m just feeling a natural high on life, love, and feeling fine.

[Both laugh]

Paulina: Well, you certainly look it. And you will be at least once you–uh–

[Sneezes] Ooh. You know, once you–

[Sneezes]

[Clears throat]

Abe: Oh, I don’t think my bride-to-be is feeling so fine. Is that–is that a cold or is that cold feet?

Johnny: You’re not going to your own mother’s wedding?

Chanel: Sorry if you had your heart set on being my plus one.

Johnny: What’s wrong, chanel? I thought you were okay with your mom marrying abe.

Chanel: I love abe. He’s a great guy and I’m sure he’d be a great stepfather. He’s not the problem.

Johnny: Okay. Then what or who is?

Chanel: The matron of honor. My dear cousin lani.

Lani: There we go. Look at you, just so handsome.

[Both laugh] And I am really happy that you’re in salem for a while.

Theo: Me too. It’s been great having a chance to spend some time with my big sis.

[Both laugh]

Lani: Well, I have had a really good time catching up with you too. Although jules and carver really made me pay for it at 3:00 A.M.

Theo: This baby thing, a lot harder than it looks, huh?

Lani: Especially having two. When I was pregnant, I read that it wasn’t just gonna be twice the work, it was more like four or five. And that has been proven true. Hey, I hope the twins didn’t scare you away from becoming a father.

Theo: No, no. I was just thinking about ciara and about the children we might have had and now ciara and ben are happily married.

Lani: I’m sorry, theo. I know that must be really hard for you.

Theo: It’s not just that.

Lani: Then what? Did something happen?

Theo: I saw them in the square, and it was just three of us standing there. It was beyond awkward, and ciara drops this book, and it was a baby book. And like a total idiot I just said, “you’re having a baby?”

Lani: Ciara’S…

Theo: Pregnant. She is gonna have ben’s baby.

Ciara: So what exactly did susan say this time?

Ben: I mean, who does she think is gonna try and hurt our child?

Marlena: Well, if you’re sure you want to know…

Ciara: Dr. Evans, please.

Marlena: She said… it was the devil. It’s my 4:05 the-show-must-go-on

Johnny: What do you have against lani? Did something happen when you guys talked last night?

Chanel: You could say that. You know how my mom told me it was a spur of the moment decision when she asked lani to be her matron of honor? That she just blurted it out the day after abe shot?

Johnny: Yeah.

Chanel: Well, that was a total lie.

Abe: Are you coming down with something?

Paulina: No, no, no. I refuse to be sick on my wedding day.

Abe: Well, it may not be up to you.

Paulina: Abra–choo! Ooh. You may be right.

Abe: When did you start feeling ill?

Paulina: I don’t, I didn’T. It must be that damn cat.

Abe: What cat?

Paulina: Marlena’S. Oh, if I’d known that she had a cat I would have taken my allergic medication before I went over there yesterday.

Paulina: Uh-huh. She sure does–a sneaky looking feline named susan.

Belle: No, no, she wasn’t possessed by the devil. At least not in this one, but she was there. We were, uh… we were on death row and we were in that execution chamber.

Shawn: Like when sami–

Belle: Yes. Yes. Except this time my mom was the executioner and, oh, she was killing that adorable stray cat that was at our house yesterday.

Shawn: Adorable? Come on. Did you see that cat’s fangs? I mean, it’s probably better that she took it to the shelter.

Belle: Oh, how can you say that? What if they put it down?

Shawn: Knowing your mom, she took it to a no-kill shelter. I mean, come on.

Belle: Maybe. But still…

Shawn: But still what?

Belle: Don’t you think she’s been acting a little weird lately? Ever since we got back from seeing claire?

Shawn: I don’t know. I mean, she seems fine to me, but you know…

Belle: Well, not to me. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just rattled because my dad’s been mia away on that case.

Shawn: Would it make you feel better if we go and check on your mom this morning?

Belle: You know, it would. Thank you.

Shawn: Mm-hmm, we’ll go check on her right after breakfast.

Belle: Okay.

Shawn: But first…

Belle: Mm. Who needs breakfast?

Shawn: Hmm, that’s what I’m talking about.

Belle: [Chuckles]

Eli: Grandma, I’m sorry that you’ve had to wait so long to see doug. And I would have driven you down there again the next day, but…

Julie: But, but your dance card has been very, very full. It’s not your problem. It shouldn’t be a problem. I just don’t get it. How marlena has the power, the right to stop me or anybody from seeing my husband.

Eli: Yeah. I don’t get it either. Listen, I’ll tell you what, tomorrow morning I’m gonna be right here and I’m gonna take you down to bayview and we’re gonna get to see doug and we’re not leaving until it happens.

Ciara: Wait, the devil is after our baby?

Marlena: No, no. That’s what susan said, but I think I know what happened. We were talking and she mentioned that she had watched “rosemary’s baby” a few nights ago. And because susan is so suggestible, I think it might’ve had some influence on her subconscious.

Ciara: Yeah, we actually saw that on tv too.

Ben: Yeah.

Marlena: Oh. But you didn’t think it meant that the devil was trying to get to your child, did you?

Ciara: No.

Ben: No. No. Of course not.

Marlena: Well, of course not, because unlike susan, you’re rational people, and you don’t watch a movie and think the devil is after your baby, because that would just be ridiculous.

[All laughing] I’ve lost count of how many asthma attacks I’ve had.

Theo: I don’t know why I was surprised. I mean, I knew that ciara and ben were married. It’s just for her to be pregnant, it seems so…

Lani: Fast?

Theo: Only a couple of months ago, she was engaged to me and we were picking out party favors and talking about starting our own family one day.

Lani: Theo, I am so sorry. This would be upsetting for anyone.

Theo: But I don’t want to be upset. I want ciara to be happy. I mean, that is all I’ve ever wanted. I just wish I would’ve told her that yesterday.

Lani: But you still can.

Theo: I know. And I will. Speaking of difficult conversations, how did your talk with chanel go?

Lani: Surprisingly well. I told chanel how I felt uncomfortable about auntie P. Asking me to be her matron of honor and chanel promised that she was totally fine with it.

Johnny: Did lani tell you your mom lied to you?

Chanel: She was trying to explain to me how my mom decided to ask her to be matron of honor instead of me. And she mentioned that my mom was about to ask her right before abe was shot.

Johnny: What?

Chanel: Yeah. So that story was a total lie. She never wanted me to be her maid of honor. She wanted lani all along.

Abe: Marlena has a cat named susan?

Paulina: I know, right? Who names their cat susan? Maybe cleopatra or aphrodite.

Abe: I can’t imagine marlena naming a cat after susan banks.

Paulina: Well, she’s a fully grown cat, so maybe she came already named. But I know one thing, she sure came with a boatload of dander. Oh–[Sneezes]

Abe: Here you go.

Paulina: Whoo! Ooh. I hope that little furball hasn’t given me hives. That’s the last thing I need on my wedding day.

Abe: You look perfectly fine. Just as lovely as always. But, you know, what were you doing at marlena’s last night?

Marlena: So susan mentioned a bassinet draped in black, and I knew exactly what had happened.

Ciara: Yeah, there was a scene like that in the movie.

Marlena: Exactly. But I was able to persuade her that her vision was from the movie and not from anything, you know, satanic. Anyway, she wanted to apologize for all the trouble. But as it happens, she’s gone back to memphis. So you won’t have any more predictions of gloom and doom as far as your baby is concerned.

Ben: Let’s hope not, right?

Marlena: Yeah. No. I think that’s an end to all that. From now on, it’s gonna be smooth sailing for you, and you’re gonna have a wonderful baby. And I for one can’t wait to meet the little baby.

[Eerie music]

Johnny: Why would your mom want lani as her matron of honor instead of you? That just doesn’t make sense.

Johnny: Which is completely absurd.

Chanel: Try completely obvious. I’m just surprised it took me so long to see it. What is the one word you would use to describe my mother?

Johnny: Frightening. I mean, fierce. Fierce.

Chanel: That, too, but I was thinking of proud. Paulina price is the g-o-a-t when it comes to pride. And how can she take pride in a daughter who’s a never-ending disappointment?

Chanel: Oh, no? Are you forgetting how I married a criminal for his money, which he didn’t have, by the way. So I couldn’t even get that right.

Johnny: What about the girl who took salem by storm with her sweet bits?

Chanel: Opening up the bakery was too little much too late. Especially when you compare that with what lani’s accomplished in her life. Solving crimes with one hand and cradling her beautiful babies with the other. My mother tried to give me a participation trophy by allowing me to walk her down the aisle. And she even lied about that to spare my feelings. And the worst part about it all is…

Chanel: I think she wishes lani were her daughter and not me.

Lani: This day, this family is gonna drive me crazy, but you know what? I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. I mean, look at us. Here we are celebrating my aunt marrying our father.

Theo: We are just the all-american blended and extended family, aren’t we?

Lani: You know, I know this must be a little strange for you too.

Theo: No one can ever take my mom’s place. But, you know, I think paulina’s great. And the last time I got a new family member, I think it turned out pretty okay.

Julie: Eli. So kind of you to want to help me get in to see doug at bayview, but you do have other priorities.

Eli: Sounds like doug.

Julie: So creative. So loving. Oh, god, I just can’t imagine him all alone and so frightened in that awful place.

Eli: Grandma…

Julie: So when you hand this to paulina, you tell her it’s from the old first lady of salem to the new first lady of salem with love.

Eli: You will always be the first lady of salem to me. You are the most thoughtful person I know.

Julie: I sure wasn’t when paulina showed up here. I thought she was up to no good.

Eli: Well, she wasn’t exactly an angel. Price town is a prime example.

Julie: It was her vision. It was inappropriate. It was unwanted in salem, but it was a vision. Eli, I believe she’s a good woman at heart. And what’s more important, she’s good for abe. So you see, when I’m wrong, I can admit it.

Paulina: I was at her house last night because… I’ve decided that I have to keep my secret. I cannot tell abe he’s not lani’s father. I can’t do it to him and I cannot do it to lani. I wanted to make sure she was ready, willing, and able to officiate for us today. I don’t want any last minute screwups.

Abe: Well, you know, marlena’s usually quite reliable. Was it something in particular?

Paulina: Oh, no, no, no. Of course not. But with the week we’ve had, I just–I don’t want to take any chances. I don’t want anything, anything to get in the way about wedding today.

Belle: Ah, straight to voicemail. Well, my mom’s obviously not here. Where could she be?

Shawn: Maybe she’s with a patient.

Belle: No, she took the day off for abe’s wedding.

Shawn: Maybe she already left at the church.

Marlena: And maybe the baby’s just excited to meet me.

Marlena: You’re gonna have to excuse me. I’ve been asked to officiate at abe and paulina’s wedding, and these sacred rites take precedence.

Ciara: Oh, wait. But wait, we haven’t even opened your gift yet.

Marlena: Oh, just open it anytime, at your convenience.

Marlena: Okay.

Ben: Well, I’ll see you out. Thank you again, dr. Evans, for coming by and for the gift and mainly for just putting our mind at ease with the whole susan banks thing.

Abe: Look, I can dress myself.

Abe: I have been doing it for quite a few years now. I can even tie my own shoes just like a big boy.

Lani: He is, at that.

Paulina: But that rubber stopper cane that they gave him at the hospital, that’s just a step down from that little tacky walker, you know, that have tennis balls on the bottom.

Lani: I know, I know, it’s not very fashionable. But the fact that he is walking at all, let alone down the aisle, auntie P., Is pretty much a miracle.

Paulina: You don’t have to tell me how lucky he is, how lucky we all are that he is still here with us. And speaking for myself, I know I am the luckiest woman in the world to be marrying that man today. Oh. [Chuckling] And you, you standing up for me, well, that’s–that’s just the cherry on the top.

Lani: [Laughs] Well, there is nowhere else I would rather be.

Paulina: Oh, honey. You don’t know how much that means to me.

Julie: Now, remember to tell paulina that’s only her something borrowed. Make it clear I want it back.

Eli: Okay. I will. And don’t forget, I will be here first thing in the morning to take you to bayview to see doug. All right?

Julie: Perfect. Perfect. Thank you, darling.

Eli: No problem. And in the meantime, I’m gonna call marlena and see if I can get her to change her mind. Love you.

Shawn: Who knows? It doesn’t look like something your parents would own.

Belle: No. It looks like something susan banks would have in that big purse of hers. She was here yesterday.

Shawn: So if it is hers, then what’s it doing down there on the floor?

Chanel: Let’s see. You have to try a slice of our angel food cake. It’s one of our specialties.

Marlena: No, thank you. I need something less healthy. How about, uh… how about death by chocolate?

Chanel: Ooh, that is an excellent choice.

Johnny: Grandma, have you met my friend and baker extraordinaire, chanel dupree?

Marlena: Oh, chanel, it’s nice to– ah, you’re paulina’s daughter, aren’t you?

Johnny: Chanel’s having kind of a rough day.

Johnny: It is the bank. They need me to come down and sign some papers immediately and apparently an e-signature won’t do, so…

Chanel: Well, go, take care of it. I’ll make sure allie gets the script changes.

Chanel: I’m fine.

Marlena: For the record, I think you’re making a mistake, but of course it’s entirely up to you.

Paulina: But you’re not gonna tell anyone, are you?

Marlena: No, no. No, of course not. Why don’t you go ahead? Chanel and I will be just fine.

Johnny: Okay. All right, then I’ll see you guys. Nyquil severe gives you powerful relief

Ben: Yeah, theo. You coming by, your being genuinely happy for us, it means a lot. Thank you.

Ciara: Yeah, and you know, you don’t even have anything to apologize for. I mean, I was the one who hurt you, and that is the last thing I ever wanted to do. I just hope that at the end of all this we can still be friends.

Theo: Always. Well, I should get a move on. The wedding awaits.

Ciara: Theo, wait. Before you go, do you think maybe I can give you a hug?

Lani: Auntie, you look beautiful.

Paulina: Well, thank you, darling.

Paulina: Enough of the flattery; I’ve already made you my matron of honor. And with you by my side and chanel on the other, oh, I can’t imagine anything more perfect. And speaking of my daughter, I thought she would have been here by now.

Lani: You know punctuality is not her strong suit, but she’ll be here. You know, we had a really good talk last night.

Paulina: Oh? Well, I’m glad. ‘Cause she was kinda standoffish when I saw her at the hospital last night. I hope she’s not holding a grudge against me.

Marlena: So you feel like your mother is preferring lani to you?

Chanel: Yes, I totally do. Johnny thinks I’m just imagining things, but I swear I’m not.

Marlena: I’m sure you’re right.

Chanel: You think I’m right?

Marlena: Yes, I do.

Chanel: Did my mother tell you something?

Marlena: Well, just enough for me to know that you should trust your instincts.

Chanel: Please, you have to tell me, dr. Evans. What did she say to you?

Marlena: Well, she said enough for me to know that there is a reason that she treats lani differently.

Chanel: And do you know what that is?

Marlena: Mm, I’m afraid I do. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Abe: [Chuckles] Well…

Theo: Hope you don’t mind my letting myself in.

Abe: Of course not. My son and best man have carte blanche.

Theo: Well, I hope that have carte blanche to speak the truth, because this is not gonna work at all.

Lani: I promise chanel’s fine. We talked about my being your matron of honor.

Paulina: Mm-hmm. A job which you will handle beautifully, just like you do everything else.

Lani: Well, thank you. To be honest, I think I was more uncomfortable with the situation than chanel was.

Paulina: Oh, well, you have no reason to be uncomfortable. I explained to chanel how I asked you to be my matron of honor on the spur of the moment because you’d been through so much after your father was shot.

Lani: What? Auntie P., You–you said that you were gonna ask me to be your matron of honor the night before, but you didn’t get a chance because my dad had been shot. So why are you saying right now that it was a spur of the moment decision? What’s going on?

Chanel: Well, what did my mom tell you about lani and me?

Marlena: I’m so sorry, but to reveal that would be to–to break doctor-patient confidentiality. That’s a cardinal sin.

Chanel: Dr. Evans, I have been torturing myself trying to understand what’s going on with my mom and me. And if you know something that could help me understand why my mom chose lani over me to be her matron of honor, you have to tell me, please.

Marlena: Oh, I just hate to see you suffering like this. So may god and the medical board forgive me for breaking my solemn oath. The reason paulina chose lani to be her matron of honor is…

Chanel: What?

Marlena: Lani is not her niece. She’s her daughter.

Julie: Wow. You made good time. I just called the office a little while ago.

Belle: Well, my assistant said that you wanted to hire me for a new case and I should rush right over. So what’s so urgent?

Julie: Well, I have a problem, and I think your legal skills are the ones that are really needed to solve it.

Belle: Oh, well, I’m happy to help if I can. And frankly, I could use a distraction. So what do you need?

Julie: I want you to sue your mother for me.

Ciara: It is so sweet how excited marlena is about our baby.

Ben: I know. If she wasn’t so supportive of me in my session with her, we might not be pregnant in the first place. Go ahead. Open it.

Ciara: Okay. Wow. It is called a bola necklace. It is supposed to soothe the baby by calling their guardian angel over to watch them in the womb. Aww, how sweet! A little guardian angel looking over our little angel.

Ben: [Chuckles] Let’s try it on.

Ciara: Mm-hmm.

Ben: I got you. I got it.

Ciara: Okay. And then the note says, “ben and ciara. I know your baby is destined to do great things.”

John: No, you’re just another one of lucifer’s tricks.

Evil kristen: Ouch. That kind of hurts my feelings.

John: He conjured up my son’s dead mother the last time he did this to marlena.

Evil kristen: Hmm. Right, but I’m not dead. I’m right here, standing in front of you. You can see me. You can hear me. You can even touch me.

Marlena: John.

John: I’m right here, doc.

Evil kristen: Well, hello there, sleepy head.

Marlena: You!

Nicole: You know, you really shouldn’t have gone to all the trouble, ’cause I already had dinner.

Ej: Not dining fashionably late anymore?

Nicole: And you should have called first.

Ej: And ruined my surprise?

Nicole: Ej, look, it’s been a long day, and I was just on my way to bed.

Ej: Ooh. Nice to know my timing is as impeccable as ever.

Nicole: Just so you know, I will be going to bed alone, so you can take your food, and just–

Ej: I actually brought something else. Chocolate cookies and cream, which is your favorite, if I recall. Surely, you have room for dessert. Mm-hmm.

Xander: I heard my best girl was back in town.

Maggie: Ah, and I heard that you got into a lot of trouble while I was gone.

Xander: Well, you came home just in time.

Maggie: Oh, didn’t I?

Xander: I really was so sorry to hear about your daughter’s passing.

Maggie: Yeah. I wish I’d had more time with summer. I never was a really good mother to her.

Xander: You were with her in the end.

Maggie: Yeah, well, she’s not suffering anymore.

Xander: Have you had any word from sarah?

Maggie: Not as much as I’d like, a text now and then.

Xander: And she sounds happy with rex?

Maggie: Yes, she does.

Xander: That’s good. No, I’m happy for her.

Maggie: Really?

Xander: Why wouldn’t I be?

Maggie: Well, because she left you so abruptly, and you’re not exactly gracious with defeat.

Xander: I admit, a few months ago, if I’d heard about sarah being happy with someone else, that would have sent me on a month-long pub crawl.

Maggie: Hmm, so what’s changed?

Xander: I’m in love again.

Gwen: You’re up to your neck in trouble. I mean, what could you possibly do to make me lose xander? I swear, if you’ve done something to hurt him, I–

Kristen: Oh, relax, gwen. I’m not gonna hurt xander. Hired muscle’s hard to come by these days. As a matter of fact, I have some news that I think might make him ecstatically happy.

Gwen: What news could you have that could possibly make xander happy?

Kristen: The truth about sarah horton. On the outside, I looked fine.

Nicole: So let’s see here. You were fatally short, sort of, left for dead…

Ej: Mm-hmm.

Nicole: Reincarnated, gone through an explosion, an invalid for a few years, and somehow, you still manage to remember my favorite ice cream.

Ej: It’s in the file of vital information that I keep in a safe place.

Nicole: But I told you that when we were married the first time.

Ej: Right.

Nicole: I know it’s hard to get used to not wearing your wedding ring.

Ej: I feel liberated. A reminder of what I rid myself of.

Nicole: Oh, nice try, ’cause I’ve had a front row seat of the never-ending love/hate tango of ej and sami.

Ej: That dance is over.

Nicole: Oh.

Ej: Mm-hmm.

Nicole: Until she comes back to salem the next time.

Ej: It’s funny, isn’t it?

Nicole: What?

Ej: The two of us both moving on from disastrous marriages to the brady twins.

Nicole: Oh, yeah, right.

Ej: And wouldn’t it be something… if we both moved on from them together?

[Tense music]

Maggie: You’re really in love with gwen ri–how do you say her last name?

Xander: Rizczech, and yeah. I am.

Maggie: I wish I could be happy for you, but after what she did to a really good person, like abigail and poor laura–

Xander: I’m telling you. Your sister-in-law’s death, it was an accident.

Maggie: What gwen did to abigail and chad was no accident. The same as jennifer and jack.

Xander: There’s a lot you don’t know. It came out while you were away.

Maggie: I know jack is gwen’s biological father.

Xander: And she grew up believing that jack turned his back on her, so he could be with jennifer. Of course, it wasn’t true. He had no idea she existed until she showed up here, but I promise you gwen no longer has it in for jack and his family. She’s put all of that behind her.

Maggie: I’m not as convinced of that as you seem to be.

Gwen: Well, it seems that you might be a bit behind on the local gossip. You see, xander knows what happened to sarah horton. She jumped into bed with her ex the day that she was supposed to marry him. Apparently, it was so good that she jilted xander, and then she left town, broke his poor heart.

Kristen: So are you acquainted with my reputation of mistress of disguise?

Gwen: My goodness, who isn’t? Your macabre transformations are stuff of legend.

Kristen: They are indeed, which is why you’ll believe me when I tell you that it wasn’t sarah horton that broke poor xander’s heart on that ill-fated wedding day.

Marlena: John. John, she’s not real. Tell me you know that.

Evil kristen: Oh, god. Please, god, make her shut up.

Marlena: Don’t believe her! Don’t believe her. Oh, darling, you’ve gotta fight. You have to fight.

John: Don’t worry, doc. The love we have is stronger than anything the prince of darkness can ever dream up.

Evil kristen: Do the two of you realize how nauseating you sound?

John: Yeah, I imagine a love like ours is pretty revolting to you because it’s abiding, it’s unconditional, and it’s true.

Evil kristen: Well, you and i used to have a very deep and true love.

John: I’ve never loved anyone like I love doc, so tell you what, why don’t you bust me out of these things, and let me go to her?

Evil kristen: I can’t do that; we have way too much catching up to do, and frankly, this reunion would be a lot better, if it wasn’t for this three-is-a-crowd situation that’s happening here.

John: What does that mean?

Evil kristen: You’re gonna have to say goodbye to your beloved doc for now. I’m waiting.

[Tense music]

Why give your family just any eggs

Rafe: I hope you can forgive me.

Ava: For what?

Nicole: If you tell ava the truth, it will break her heart, and I can’t let you do that.

Rafe: I’m not gonna lie to her.

Nicole: I’m not asking you to.

Rafe: Okay, then what are you asking?

Nicole: I’m just asking you not to tell her or anyone else, and neither will I.

Rafe: Um, just being so hard on you just now, what happened with carmine, and thinking you were going back to the old ava vitali.

Ava: Come on, there is nothing to forgive you for. You know, my past makes it pretty hard for people to to believe me, and I did go after gabi.

Rafe: You did, and her company, which she built from nothing, and it means everything to her.

Ava: And you mean everything to me, but I promise you I won’t give her any more trouble.

Rafe: Okay, all right. Listen, I understand though. She is a lot, you know. Just the next time she drives you nuts, you come to me.

Ava: Okay.

Rafe: Okay?

Ava: Yes, I’m sorry I didn’t do that before.

Rafe: Well, I have no business lecturing anybody.

Ava: I really have no idea why you were being so hard on yourself. Now, how about this? How about we just… we wipe the slate clean, and we just start fresh?

Rafe: That sounds good.

Ava: Yeah?

Rafe: Yeah.

Ava: You want to know what else I’d like to do?

Rafe: What?

Ava: This.

Ej: Why don’t we take this to the bedroom?

Nicole: Because holly and allie’s baby are down the hall.

Ej: You don’t know how quiet I can be.

Nicole: Since when?

Ej: Oh, you recall the intimate details. I’m flattered.

Nicole: I–

Ej: Hello. What just happened?

Nicole: I can’t do this.

Ej: Well, why not? We’re both single, consenting adults. Why shouldn’t we enjoy each other?

Nicole: Because I’ll feel like more of a slut than i already do, okay?

Gwen: So let me get this straight. You put on a sarah horton mask, and then you jumped into bed with her ex, and you just hoped that xander would find the two of you in bed together?

Kristen: And he did.

Gwen: Okay, and then you, still with this sarah mask on, broke it off with xander, and then you what? You left town with this rex person?

Kristen: No, I did not leave town; it was sarah, courtesy of a one-way ticket provided by me to a secluded island that was owned by my family.

Gwen: So who’s rex with?

Kristen: Nobody, silly. To him, it was just a fling with his ex. See, I arranged for him to get an offer from doctors without borders in a remote location where there’s almost no access to cell phones or emails. It was a prestigious appointment that even rex couldn’t turn down.

Gwen: So he went alone?

Kristen: Hmm. Keep up, will you? Yeah, and to make things easier for maggie, I text her periodically, from sarah, to make sure that she doesn’t worry about her precious daughter.

Gwen: So–hmm. So this sarah never actually threw xander over for rex?

Kristen: By jove, she’s got it. Yes, and if you don’t get me out of here, I’m just gonna tell xander where to find the real love of his life.

Evil kristen: Oh, there. That ought to hold you.

Marlena: What do you plan to do with john?

Evil kristen: Don’t you worry about him. I’ve got big plans for john black.

Marlena: You’re not even real. You’re not even kristen.

Evil kristen: What’s your point? Okay, so once john betrays his wedding vows to you, in the worst possible way, then, you see, your great love will no longer be strong enough to help you resist me.

Marlena: You’ve underestimated john. You always do.

Evil kristen: No, no, no, marlena. After all, kristen was able to get father eric to betray his vows, and his vows were to the almighty. John’s vows are just to you, so yeah, he’s gonna submit to his desires, and he’s gonna love every single second of it. It’s just too bad you’re not invited. It’s gonna be a fantastic show.

[Tense music]

Xander: Maggie, I’d just really like you to get to know gwen; you’ll see for yourself she’s not what she was.

Maggie: You’re asking a lot.

Xander: Come on, you were the first person in my life who believed that I could change, and because of you, I did.

Maggie: I wasn’t the first person to believe in you. It was sarah. You know, I’m never gonna get over her running off with rex. She was over rex. She was in love with you.

Xander: No, I think i understand it. She never really forgave me for what happened with her baby. Had to be that, and when she left town I was in such a bad place, maggie. And then I met gwen, and she was in a bad place, too, but the two of us together, we helped each other, made each other happy again. And now I can see that sarah and I are both–well, we’re both where we’re meant to be.

Gwen: You’re a bloody liar. I don’t believe a word of what you’re saying to me. You’re just playing a little game with me, aren’t you?

Kristen: Maybe. Or maybe I’m telling the truth. And if xander finds out that sarah never stopped loving him, he’ll end it with you so fast it’ll make your head swim.

Evil kristen: Alone, at last.

John: What’d you do with doc?

Evil kristen: Oh, haven’t we spoken enough about that headshrinker? Well, you used to love it when I ran my finger through your hair.

John: She’s not kristen. She’s not kristen. The real kristen is obsessed with brady. She’s the mother of his daughter.

Evil kristen: But I’m your kristen. I’m the kristen that you ached for when I was married to tony. I’m the kristen that you battled stefano for. I’m the one that helped save belle and stupid, insipid sami. Sold that poor baby into the black market. I mean who does that? Do you remember all those things? Hm?

Ej: Is it me? Does being with me me make you a slut? Or is it residual guilt about eric?

Nicole: We’re not having sex because I don’t want to.

Ej: And it couldn’t be because my divorce isn’t final. The nicole I know would relish the chance to stick it to samantha. And when was the last time you had sex anyway? That pathetic, drunken fling with xander cook? That was months ago–

Nicole: For your information, I had sex on halloween, okay?

Ej: I have competition. Really? I shouldn’t be indignant. We’re not exclusive, so if you’re worried about my male ego, you–

Nicole: I’m not–I could care less about your ego, all right? I’m just upset at myself for making love to a man who was with someone else. Someone I know, okay?

Ej: Why be so hard on yourself? These things happen.

Ej: Hm.

Nicole: I don’t remember you being so “live and let live” when you found out sami cheated on you with lucas.

Ej: Touché.

Nicole: Sorry. That wasn’t fair.

Ej: But I would like to point out that samantha and i were married. Xander and his partner are not.

Nicole: What does xander have to do with this?

Ej: It wasn’t him on halloween?

Nicole: No, no. I was with a good man, a man with principles, a man who thinks about other people and not just himself, okay? He is nothing like xander or you, for that matter. He hates your guts, by the way.

Ej: Oh, my god, oh. You slept with rafe.

Ava: Too much too soon. I came on too strong.

Rafe: No, no, no.

Ava: Yep, I did.

Rafe: No.

Ava: I did, yep. There has been a lot that’s gone on in the last two days, and maybe starting over means taking things slow.

Rafe: Yeah, maybe.

Ava: Okay.

Rafe: Okay.

Ava: All right. Then you know what I’ll do? I’ll sleep in my room tonight, okay? You know, I’m sure you’re exhausted, and we could both use a really good night’s sleep. And we’ll catch our breaths and figure out where we want to go from here.

Rafe: Yeah, you know, that sounds like a plan.

Ava: Okay. I’ll see you in the morning, okay?

Rafe: Okay. Night.

[Soft music]

Maggie: You know, I guess i should be a little more considerate about gwen. I mean, people, they do change.

Xander: And gwen has paid a really heavy price for what she did–I mean, jack’s all but turned his back on her.

Maggie: And don’t you think she deserved that after all the misery she caused abigail?

Xander: Well, that’s what gwen says, but I just… want to think there’s some hope. And you know, a good word from you about her, that would go such a long way with jack and the hortons.

Maggie: Oh, xander. I have loved abigail since the day she was born, and me talking up gwen to her family would feel like a betrayal to her. I mean, think about what sarah did to you. You know now how much a betrayal like that can hurt.

Marlena: John. John will never betray me, not as long as he knows that I’m still me, and I still love him. Oh. Fight. John, you’ve gotta fight. Please. Our love is so much stronger than anything that monster can throw at us.

Evil kristen: Do you remember when I first came to salem? You saved me.

John: Are you sure you’re okay?

Kristen: Yeah, I’m okay. This little mugging just capped off the perfect night.

John: No, I think this little mugging just about cost you your life, young lady.

Kristen: Well, I was a little scared, just for a minute there. Just that part where you jumped in, and that one kid pulled that switchblade.

John: Yeah, well, that’s over with now.

Evil kristen: You were my hero then. You could be my hero again. To be a thriver with metastatic breast cancer

Kristen: Oh, gwen, be smart. All you have to do is spring me out of this place, and you can have your happily ever after with xander.

Gwen: All I have to do? My god, do you know how many cops are out there because you’re in residence now? They’re on every bloody corner.

Kristen: Well, then you’ll have to be extra careful, won’t you, hm? Like you were when you slipped abigail those drugs that made her see pink elephants. I wouldn’t wait too long. It’s gonna be easier to get me out of this place than to get me out of statesville.

Maggie: You really think gwen is worth all this trouble?

Xander: Oh, I truly do.

Maggie: And you’re sure that she’s never gonna do anything else to hurt my family?

Xander: Absolutely.

Maggie: Okay, then. I’ll talk to jack. I’m not making any promises.

Xander: Come here.

Maggie: What?

Xander: Just do it.

Maggie: Whoa! You put me down. You’re incorrigible. You really are.

Xander: Maggie kiriakis, I love you.

Maggie: Oh! Oh, my.

Nicole: Okay, time to go.

Ej: I’m sorry, okay? I just don’t understand. I thought you resolved to stay away from him.

Nicole: I had, but I was at the office working that night, and it’s really creepy being in the basic black building by myself, and on halloween, and I–oh, god. I thought I saw deimos kiriakis.

Ej: What?

Nicole: I mean it. I thought I saw him.

Ej: He’s dead.

Nicole: And so are you, yet here you are with ice cream. Look, I called rafe, and he came over, and he calmed me down. And he was really sweet, and we had sex on the conference table.

Ej: Oh, my god, I own that–

Nicole: Okay, stop, don’t start, stop it.

Ej: I can’t believe this.

Nicole: Well, for your information, nothing has changed between rafe and me, okay? It was one time, and it’s never gonna happen again.

Evil kristen: Don’t you remember what it was like for us at the very beginning? Oh, we couldn’t keep our hands off of each other. Even your friend alice horton could see that we were falling in love with each other.

John: You saved me, too.

Evil kristen: Yes! Yes, you do remember. I saved you from the fire at the community center.

John: And afterwards, i tried to donate money to you, so you could rebuild the place.

Evil kristen: Yes. I didn’t want to accept it, but you wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. Can’t you see we were meant to be together?

John: I know what you’re trying to do, and it’s not gonna work here. The only woman that I want to be with is marlena. That’s never gonna change. Never, never gonna change. Never gonna change.

Evil kristen: Okay, but you know what? You did remember what we had. I can see it on your face, but I can be patient if I have to be. After all, I’ve been around for an eternity. And I do mean that literally. It’s my 4:05 the-show-must-go-on

Ej: It’s all over with rafe? You’re sure?

Nicole: I’m sure. He’s with ava, and she is my friend. And she can’t know what happened, so you need to keep your trap shut.

Ej: I don’t even want to think about the ghastly details of your one-nighter with rafe, let alone talk about it.

Nicole: Thank you.

Ej: But I do have one condition.

Nicole: What?

Ej: The next time you’re terrorized by the undead on a pagan holiday, promise to call me first.

[Soft music]

Xander: I have good news. Did you hear what I said, love?

Gwen: What’s your good news, darling?

Xander: Well, I just came from talking to the one person in this bloody town who can fix things between you and jack.

Gwen: Really, and who’s that?

Xander: Maggie horton kiriakis.

Gwen: Oh, dear, I wish you hadn’t have done that.

Xander: It’s a good thing. Maggie has some real sway in the horton family. If there’s anyone who can convince jack to make peace with you, it’s her.

Gwen: I don’t understand. Why would sarah horton’s mother want to lift a finger for me?

Xander: Because she has a soft spot for anyone who’s trying to change their ways, and I told her I believe in you. But soon, maggie, and jack, and all the rest of them, they’re all gonna see in you what I see.

Kristen: And if xander finds out that sarah that sarah never stopped loving him, he’ll end it with you so fast it’ll make your head spin.

[Soft music]

Susan: What just happened to me?

Demon marlena: You had the privilege of being my temporary host.

Susan: Oh, oh, my god! You mean that satan was inside my body? Oh, beelzebub, I rebuke you, in the name of all that is holy and righteous!

Demon marlena: Shut up, you nitwit, before I decide that you are too much trouble to live.

Susan: Please, god, please. Please forgive me, I mean, I really did try to stop her. I did. I just–she’s just too strong.

Demon marlena: I just had a good idea. Why don’t I pay a visit to elvis junior?

Susan: No, no!

Demon marlena: Then stop the praying! Why don’t you two just relax? I’ve got a few things I’ve gotta do. Yeah, I’ve got to corrupt some more souls, destroy a few more lives, but I’ll be back so soon. And then, john and kristen can pick up where they left off.

Gwen: Xander’s $1 million.

Trask: Why would I have it?

Gwen: Can we just skip past this, trask, because I know that you are blackmailing xander in exchange for keeping my secret.

Trask: Oh, that million. Pretty juicy secret, if I remember correctly, lying about your miscarriage so you can blame your sister for the death of your baby.

Gwen: I’m not proud of it.

Trask: Nor should you be. No wonder xander was so willing to hand over all that money to protect you.

Gwen: I didn’t know that he was going to do that–if I’d have known, I would’ve stopped him from making that deal.

Trask: Oh, well.

Gwen: No, it’s not, “oh, well,” because I’m calling this off. I want his money back now.

Steve: All right, shane. I appreciate it. Give my best to kimberly, okay?

Kayla: Oh, oh, oh, oh, bye, shane–tell kimberly to come visit me sometime.

Steve: I guess you heard that. Okay, man, thanks.

Kayla: What were you two talking about?

Steve: Well, I thought maybe belle or marlena got mixed up and that john was actually on an isa mission, not a black patch case, so I called shane to find out.

Kayla: And?

Steve: He said that john hasn’t worked with them in months, which means we still have no idea where john is.

Demon marlena: Hello. I’m home. Oh, looks like you’ve missed me. I’m sorry I was gone so long, but I had a lot to accomplish. No rest for the wicked, you know.

John: What have you been up to?

Marlena: Well, don’t be so upset. I was just out uniting some salem citizens with some old friends like I’m about to do for you.

[Cat meows] She always did like you.

Trask: Sorry, ms. Rizczech, but a deal is a deal.

Gwen: You do not understand. That deal is no longer valid.

Trask: And why is that?

Gwen: Because I have decided to tell my father the truth about my miscarriage.

Kayla: So you’re still worried about john.

Steve: Like I said, baby, something is not right about all of this.

Kayla: You know, is it a possibility that maybe john really is working for the isa, and it’s so top secret that even shane can’t even tell you?

Steve: It’s possible, but my gut is saying shane is telling me the truth.

Kayla: Well, you said you talked to belle. I mean, what about marlena?

Steve: Not yet.

Kayla: Well, you need to go talk to her. Maybe marlena can shed some light on the situation.

Demon marlena: That is so sweet. You know, back in the middle ages, people thought that cats were my minions, that they would do the bidding of the devil. But people were so suspicious and afraid in those days. They were afraid that cats would steal their souls on my behalf.

John: So is that why he’s here–to steal my soul?

Demon marlena: No, cats can’t do that. No, you’re beginning to sound like you’re from the dark ages.

John: So why the hell is he here then?

Demon marlena: Well, i thought you might be lonely. I thought you’d like to see an old friend.

John: A friend?

Demon marlena: Don’t you recognize her?

John: No.

Demon marlena: All right. How about this?

John: Susan? It’s my 4:05 the-show-must-go-on

Chad: So your dad is writing off gwen for good?

Abigail: For now at least. I told him he might feel differently once he cooled down. But he’s done with her and her lies.

Chad: Well, I can’t say that I blame him or that a part of me isn’t relieved.

Abigail: She’s done a lot of damage to our family.

Chad: Yeah. Everyone’s gonna to be a lot better off without her in our lives.

Abigail: Yeah.

Chad: What? You don’t agree?

Abigail: It’s just regardless of what she’s done, she’s still my dad’s daughter, and I feel really terrible that he’s losing her. I never intended to take her away from him.

Jack: You think I don’t care about my daughter?

Xander: Well, not enough to pull her out of her misery. Jack, think about it from her perspective. She just lost her baby and then she tried to do the decent thing by going over to break the news to chad in person.

Jack: Only she didn’T.

Xander: Because instead she was confronted by an understandably very angry abigail who unleashed a barrage of verbal abuse.

Jack: Abigail’s already taken responsibility for the fight at the top of the stairs. That hardly justifies gwen’s horrific lie.

Xander: You’re still not thinking about it from her– put yourself in gwen’s place. Just imagine how that must have been for her, back at the hospital, in pain, grieving the loss of her child, abigail’s cruel words still ringing in her ears– abigail, who has two beautiful children of her own and has always had the love of her father her whole life. Come on. Do you not understand how in that moment gwen might have wanted to take just a little bit of revenge? It was an impulsive decision to lie, one she has felt horrible about ever since.

Jack: And yet not horrible enough to tell me the truth.

Trask: You’re going to tell your father the truth– all of it?

Gwen: Yes. As soon as I leave here, I’m going to confess to my father about why I lied regarding the circumstances of my miscarriage.

Trask: Well, he hasn’t been in your life very long. Aren’t you afraid that once he knows, he’ll cut you out of his, hate you forever for what you did to his other daughter?

Gwen: Of course I am, but that is a risk that I must take.

Trask: Hmm. For xander and his money.

Gwen: Look, he has already done so much for me. I cannot ask him to make this kind of sacrifice.

Steve: Marlena is not returning my calls.

Kayla: Well, don’t take it personally–she hasn’t returned any of my calls either.

Steve: I know you were trying to get in touch with her about doug, right? It’s just downright cruel to keep julie away from him.

Kayla: You know, I agreed with her decision at first. I mean, we do need to make sure that doug is not a danger to julie or to himself. But now I just think it would be so good for him to be around his loved ones.

Steve: Do you have any idea why marlena has taken such a hard line on this?

Kayla: Honestly, I don’T. You know, before she had him committed, doug insisted that it was really marlena who attacked julie. But I can’t imagine that she would take that personally.

Steve: There’s definitely something off with her.

Kayla: That’s funny. That’s exactly what john said before he disappeared.

John: Susan. Susan, you all right?

Susan: Meow.

John: Susan!

John black, is that you?

Susan: [Stammering] Y-yeah?

John: You okay? You okay?

Trask: Then you understand that even if you told the truth, I have no real incentive to give it back.

Gwen: Please, I am trying to appeal to your sense of decency. Now I assume that you got into this job because you wanted to do the right thing, yes? That is what I am trying to do here.

Trask: I’ll admit it’s very noble but I still find it puzzling.

Gwen: Which part?

Trask: Your sudden decision to come clean. After all, you did go to great lengths to keep it secret.

Gwen: I already told you. I am doing this for xander, to get his money back.

Trask: And you’re willing to suffer the consequences that come along with telling the truth?

Gwen: Yes. It’s eating me up inside anyway. My father deserves to know the truth.

Trask: Indeed. So why are you lying right now?

Gwen: What do you mean?

Trask: [Scoffs] We both know that your sudden decision to do the right thing is all an act. Your secret has already been exposed.

Jack: I know gwen was in pain when she made up that lie, and maybe it was impulsive. But you know what wasn’t? The hundreds of times that I have seen her since. If she had come to me and told me the truth in the days or even the weeks that followed, maybe we could have worked something out. But she didn’t do that, did she?

Xander: She didn’t want to lose you, jack. Come on. Gwen grew up with nothing. Her new relationship with her dad meant everything to her.

Jack: Xander– this isn’t the first time that she’s lied to me. We have been down this road before, and there comes a point when forgiveness isn’t an option anymore.

Xander: So that’s it? Your daughter’s dead to you?

Jack: No. There will always be place for gwen in my heart, but I don’t think I can forgive her for this. Quite frankly, I can’t forgive you either.

Kayla: I found john in marlena’s office. He was looking for a recording of one of her therapy sessions.

Steve: That’s a violation, isn’t it?

Kayla: Of course it is, and I told him that, but he didn’t care. He believes that marlena wasn’t acting like herself and that it all started after the therapy session with doug.

Steve: The night that doug collapsed in her office.

Kayla: Yeah, and I’m sure that was very upsetting to marlena, but john thought it was something more than that.

Steve: What was he hoping to learn from that recording?

Kayla: I don’t really know. He just thinks that whatever transpired between marlena and doug had something to do with it, changed her.

Steve: I assume you tried to talk him out of it?

Kayla: Of course I did. But he went back anyway and listened.

Steve: Okay. Do you know what he heard?

Susan: Please, please, dear lord, bring dr. Marlena evans back to her husband and help her fight off satan so that she can save john black and me too. As your humble servant, I am begging you. I am begging you, please help her fight.

Demon marlena: No!

Chad: Come here. You have absolutely nothing to feel sorry about. All you did was uncover the truth. So whatever happens to gwen from here is on her.

Abigail: But what if I cost my dad a chance at a relationship with his daughter?

Chad: Well, she didn’t care about your relationship with your father or me or our children. I mean, she let you blame yourself for her baby’s death.

Abigail: I mean, you blamed me too. I mean, I know you didn’t want to admit it, and that’s okay. But I could tell.

Chad: Look, and I’m ashamed of it, yes. I did resent you for playing a part in my child’s death, but I knew that you didn’t do it on purpose.

Abigail: Okay.

Chad: I’m sorry, okay, for everything. And I’m just…I’m grateful that we know the truth, and we can finally start to heal.

Xander: I don’t understand. What did I do?

Jack: You’ve been sticking up for gwen this whole time, covering for her. You must have known the real story, or are you telling me you also believed she was a sex worker?

Xander: Gwen refused to tell me what snyder was holding over her, but then he made a slip. When I confronted her, she admitted the truth.

Trask: Oh, he sure did, and he explained how jack discovered the truth, so it wouldn’t be fair for me to keep the money. He didn’t mention that to you?

Trask: Coincidentally, he also tried to appeal to my sense of decency, but unlike you, he didn’t try to trick me.

Gwen: Well, you are trying to trick me now, aren’t you?

Trask: Am I?

Gwen: Yes! God, you could have told me that you knew the truth from the bloody start.

Trask: What, and miss this little performance of yours?

Kayla: You know I can’t break doctor-patient confidentiality. I mean, by all rights, I should have reported john.

Steve: Sweetness, I am not asking information relating to doug. I would just like to know if john told you anything that might give us a clue as to where he went.

Kayla: Well, this I can tell you–john was rattled by what he heard.

Steve: Did he say why?

Kayla: He just said that he could hear marlena talking on the recording, but not doug.

Steve: Well, maybe the recording device was too far away from him.

Kayla: No, every time doug was talking, there was just static.

Steve: Well, could have been a technical glitch.

Kayla: Well, maybe, but he also said what really disturbed him was that it seemed like marlena was talking to someone else in the room besides doug.

Steve: There was someone else in the room that night with them?

Kayla: That’s what he thought.

Steve: Well, who could it have been?

Demon susan: [Chuckling] Did you two really think that you could get rid of me that easily?

Marlena: You leave susan alone.

Susan: Oh, trust me. I don’t want to be in this body either. But you, ms. Marlena, gave me no choice since you managed to cast me out again. But luckily, susan’s connection to the spirit world…

Trask: I’m sure you’re very disappointed that he can no longer afford to spoil you or take you on exotic vacations.

Jack: I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Xander: What does that mean?

Kayla: The only thing he said was when marlena was talking to the third person, she sounded scared.

Steve: Scared in what way?

Kayla: I don’t know. I felt he was just about to tell me, and then we were interrupted by the news of abe being shot.

Steve: I assume marlena didn’t discuss this with you.

Kayla: No, I have not spoken to her.

Steve: This just doesn’t make sense. There’s one thing that’s bothering me about this. If john was so concerned about marlena, so concerned that he would break the law… why would he up and leave town to go on a case?

John: Don’t you hurt her!

Demon susan: Hmm…

[Chuckling] Why would I do that? You see, marlena and i are like this.

John: Not anymore. She’s finally free of you.

Susan: I’ll admit, I wasn’t expectin’ to be so rudely evicted from her body, but I’m not done yet with her.

John: What are you going to do?

Susan: What am I not going to do? You see, doc and I have so much more to accomplish together.

John: She’s going to keep on fighting you because our love is too strong, and we’re going to beat you to your knees like we did all those years ago.

Demon susan: [Chuckling] Then maybe it’s time to take you out of the equation.

John: Now you can kill me, but you’re never going to kill the love between doc and me or the spirit of that love.

Demon susan: Mm, you may have a point. I mean, love can be so persistent. Maybe killing you isn’t the answer, john, not when I can find a better way to break marlena’s spirit.

Chad: I know that the truth coming out about gwen doesn’t magically fix all our problems. I know that we still have a lot of trust issues to work through, but, I mean, am I wrong to feel hopeful?

Abigail: No, I feel that way, too.

Abigail: We’re making progress. We’re sharing a bed again.

Chad: Well, as you said, we never had a problem there.

Chad: Yeah. Used to be when I looked in there, it was… it was fog, dark clouds.

Trask: Ugh, what are you doing here?

Kristen: A meeting with my attorney. I put in a request to see brady.

Trask: Oh, I guess you haven’t heard.

Trask: I bumped into your lawyer earlier. Turns out brady declined your request.

Kristen: Don’t believe you.

Trask: Well, you’re more than welcome to stay and confirm it. But if you’re counting on brady to come to your rescue, I’m afraid you’re out of luck.

Demon susan: All this time, marlena still hasn’t given herself over to me completely.

John: And she never will.

Demon susan: Never say never, john. You humans and your emotions, I mean, they’re so fragile. I mean, you mortals are so susceptible to passion and jealousy and insecurity and hate. Not even dr. Marlena evans is immune.

John: So now what are you talking about?

Demon susan: I’m talking about you, john, betraying your beloved doc in the worst possible way. Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Chad: We’re finally back on track.

Xander: Jack, you should be mad at me all you want, but please at least consider forgiving gwen.

Chloe: You know, when I told nicole that she and rafe need to stop playing games and put everything out on the table, this is not what I meant.

Melinda: I will drop all the felony charges against your boyfriend on one condition.

Brady: You know, there is a certain amount of irony to this.

Brady: That’s not what i meant, what I meant was, when rafe and nicole were doing their thing, marlena was advising me to do the same thing to you right there.

Chloe: That’s not ironic, my friend, that’s just bad advice.

Brady: Which I didn’t take. By the way, will you do me a favor and let philip know that nothing happened between us the night I helped you move into the inn? ‘Cause I really don’t need him flipping out on me anymore.

Victor: I had a little chat with melinda trask. Tells me you’re in league with ava vitali again. It’s your little partnership caused abe carver to get plugged.

Philip: She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

Victor: No, I think maybe she does.

Philip: Why would you say that?

Victor: Because she also said you’re lucky you’re not in jail.

Gabi: What kind of condition did you have in mind?

Melinda: I think I’ll discuss that with mr. Dimera since he’s the one that’s cuffed. Victor kiriakis and I recently made a deal, one that he’s not that fond of.

Jake: What kind of deal?

Melinda: If you agree to say under oath that philip kiriakis was blackmailing you, then I will–

Gabi: Then jake can neutralize victor, which is worth more to you than having jake here on these nothing charges.

Melinda: They aren’t nothing charges.

Gabi: Come on, our lawyer says that his charges will be dismissed on merits.

Melinda: And jake is so confident of that he broke himself out of jail.

Gabi: You know, as tempting as it is to stick it to philip I just, I don’t think it’s a good idea to make an enemy of victor.

Melinda: Excuse me. My offer is to your boyfriend, not you. Well?

Jake: I’ll take the deal. Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Abigail: Dad.

Abigail: What did you say?

Jack: I told her I would never understand her putting you in that position. And then I walked out, and when I came back, she was gone. Hopefully she got the message that she’s no longer welcome in this house.

Xander: Jack was off his head when he said all of that. He didn’t mean it.

Gwen: He meant it. Do you know that I kinda just forgot myself for a minute and I called him “dad”? He looked at me like he absolutely hated me.

Xander: Well, it seemed like that was what abigail wanted when she showed up– to make him hate you.

Gwen: And why wouldn’t she? I told our father and her husband that she was the reason that I lost my baby.

Xander: She’s no angel. When you told me about the row you had with her before you fell, things she said about you being a rotten mum.

Gwen: You know what, she’s right. I mean, look at me. Can you imagine me trying to raise a child?

Xander: You’ve raised chad and abigail’s lot for months, and you did a good job.

Gwen: Yeah, by drugging their mother and shagging their father.

Xander: Don’t talk about yourself like that.

Gwen: Do you know that abigail told jack that I am incapable of loving anyone.

Xander: Well, she has a hell of a nerve saying that.

Gwen: Started to think that maybe she was right.

Xander: So where does that leave us? Best friends?

Jack: That she’d already miscarried before you started your argument at the top of the stairs. When I think about the way that I treated you after she fell–

Abigail: Dad, you were in shock.

Jack: That doesn’t excuse what I did. And neither does my guilty conscience.

Abigail: Look, it’s over now, okay?

Jack: Well, you know what really galls me? Gwen has known for months that I had no idea that her mother was pregnant with her all those years ago. That I never deliberately turned my back on her. She knows that I have forgiven her for the horrific things she’s done to you, and when she came to me and told me that she was pregnant with your husband’s baby, I-I opened my arms to her. She’s known all that and still, she came up with this vicious lie. And then you– you left–you left behind your two beloved children for weeks because you– because I believed and chad believed her vicious lies.

Abigail: It wasn’t just that.

Jack: It was that. It was. It was. Abigail, I can’t stand what she did to you, but I really can’t stand that she did it with my help.

Abigail: You did not help her.

Jack: I did help her. I didn’t question her. It was all the same thing.

Abigail: Okay, look, I– look, I’m okay. I really am. Dad, please. Hey, look at me.

Jack: God. Thank god. Thank god for you.

[Heartfelt music]

You asked me–you asked me about my relationship with her, with gwen. She’s still my daughter, and I’m not–and I’m not gonna stop loving her. But the days of me asking you and jj and your mother to accept her as a part of the family are over. She is my problem now. None of you ever have to have anything to do with her ever again. Gwen: You don’t want to go away with me anymore.

Xander: I didn’t say I don’t want to. I said I can’t, I–

[Sighs] The da still has my money, and I’m not getting it back.

Gwen: But that money is no longer evidence.

Xander: Trask decided to keep it for herself.

Gwen: What? But that’s a bloody crime.

Xander: Right. But with my track record, who’s gonna believe me when I say that?

Gwen: But she can’t get away with that, xander.

Xander: Yeah, she can.

Gwen: Why?

Xander: Remember her walking in on us? We were talking about you lying to your father about when you lost your baby? You were right. She didn’t let on, but she did overhear us.

Gwen: Oh, my god.

Xander: When I went back to see her, she said she’d tell jack everything if I didn’t let her keep the money.

Gwen: But jack knows now.

Xander: I didn’t know that when I made the deal.

Gwen: Oh, my god. This is unbelievable. So you not only went to jail for me, you now also lost $1 million just to protect me from my stupid lie.

Xander: It’s not like I’ve made that money from the sweat of my brow. I’ll get my hands on another million.

Gwen: You know what, could you just do me a favor? Just shut me out of here and tell me never ever to come back again.

Ava: I hate to ruin your little fantasy here, but I’m innocent. I didn’t kill carmine, and nobody can prove that I did.

Gwen: [Scoffs] You really think the da is gonna believe that charlie came crawling from the grave to save the mother that he always hated?

Ava: Tripp and allie saw him too.

Gwen: They’re still on thin ice. Trask knows that you and philip were planning to use carmine to blackmail jake and me. And so does rafe.

Ava: Oh, you must have loved telling him that.

Gwen: Oh, I did. But you know what I can’t understand is, you had me, jake, rafe. We’re all living together. How could you be so stupid to think that rafe wouldn’t notice what you were trying to do to his sister?

Ava: Well, I wasn’t actually worried about it because he’s as sick of you as I am.

I’ve got your paperwork here. Sign it and you are free to go.

Gwen: Ready to blow this joint?

Jake: I’m so ready.

Gwen: Ta-ta. Have yourself a good day.

Philip: Well, you gave me a stellar performance evaluation a few weeks ago, and now I’m out of my ass? No wonder the board is complaining about a lack of consistent leadership. That’s on you, father.

Victor: I’ve got the board under control.

Philip: So who’s gonna be next? I know. Justin and xander can run things from jail.

Victor: You’re both out. You’re behind the times.

Philip: You still haven’t told me who’s gonna take my place.

Victor: Well, it won’t be justin, I can tell you that. He’s on his honeymoon.

Philip: He got married to bonnie already? That’s why you’re in such a bad mood and taking it out on me like you always do.

Victor: You’re all in contention for my least favorite relatives. You can trust that xander’s never gonna run titan again.

Philip: So it’ll be brady. Of course it will. First, he steals my girlfriend then he steals my job.

Victor: The hell are you talking about?

Brady: There you go.

Chloe: Thank you.

Brady: You knocking off?

Chloe: Well, yeah, I thought I’d call philip and see if he wants to have dinner out.

Victor: So brady slept with chloe, eh?

Philip: And it’s obviously highly amusing to you.

Victor: Oh, come on, philip. Don’t tell me that you didn’t know that that was bound to happen? At least she’s out of kristen’s clutches.

Philip: Is this you saying I should look on the bright side?

Victor: No, it’s me saying that I should and I am. Both my son and my grandson have dodged a female bullet.

Chloe: Who’s kristen’s lawyer?

Brady: Somebody ej hired.

Chloe: Oh, well does the text say why she wants to see you?

Brady: No, but I’m pretty sure I know why.

Gabi: Oh, man. Thought they would have cleaned that up by now.

Jake: I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough dead bodies to last me a lifetime.

Gabi: Me too, but at least you’re out of jail. I wonder how ava’s holding up.

Jake: You think the da’s really gonna believe that charlie came back from the dead?

Gabi: Do I believe nick came back from the grave and then buried you alive in it?

Jake: I don’t know, man. Either people in this town are seeing things, or–

Gabi: Those things really happened.

Melinda: This is your statement to commissioner hernandez. There’s a note on it that said that it was made without counsel present.

Ava: Right.

Melinda: I’d like you to read it over carefully and sign it. Why did you do that?

Ava: ‘Cause I can’t sign that.

Melinda: Why?

Ava: Because what I told rafe about my dead son killing carmine, it wasn’t the truth.

Melina: And what is?

Ava: I’m guilty. I stabbed carmine. I killed him. I’ve lost count of how many asthma attacks I’ve had.

Melinda: So you’re confessing?

Ava: Right.

Melinda: What’s the catch?

Ava: Look, I panicked. A former associate of mine was dead on the police commissioner’s kitchen floor.

Melinda: And your first instinct was to make up a totally unbelievable lie.

Ava: Like I said, I panicked.

Melinda: Well, you don’t look panicked now. Why don’t you tell me what did happen?

Ava: So I was making dinner and carmine shows up at my door. At the police commissioner’s door. He told me that he just– he shot the mayor, and he wanted a place to hide out, and I told him that I couldn’t help him because I’m not part of the vitali family anymore. He didn’t like my answer. So when I threatened to call rafe, he grabbed a dish towel from the counter. He twisted it around my neck, and he tried to strangle me. Look, you see the marks? Well, I guess they’re fading.

Melinda: So what happened next?

Ava: Well, I couldn’t really breathe, so I knew I had to do something. I grabbed the knife that I’d been using, and I stabbed him. I was just trying to save myself. I wasn’t trying to kill the guy.

Melinda: So it was self-defense?

Ava: Exactly.

Melinda: That is a very compelling story, ms. Vitali. Only one problem. I don’t believe a word of it.

Xander: Look, I don’t care if the da does keep that money.

Gwen: Xander, you look me in the eye and you tell me that.

Xander: All right, I do care. But I’m not walking out on you, gwen.

Gwen: Well, that’s sweet.

Xander: Why would I? This is my room. And also, you are the best thing that’s happened to me since, well, in a long time.

Gwen: I’m the best thing that’s happened to you? Well, that’s just bloody sad.

Xander: Why? We’re free. We’re together. We’re both better off than we were when we met.

Gwen: Except for the fact that my father hates me.

Xander: Jack just needs to cool off. I mean, he’ll come around.

Gwen: No, you weren’t there today. There’s no fixing this one, and that’s on me. But we are not gonna let melinda trask get away with blackmailing you.

Xander: I–I can’t exactly cry foul. Not since we tried to blackmail that judge and it blew up in our face. My hands are tied, and trask knows it.

Gwen: Don’t you think it’s gonna look quite odd if the district attorney just suddenly has an extra million dollars?

Xander: She’s not keeping it for herself–she’s using it for a worthy cause.

Gwen: And what’s that? The melinda trask retirement fund?

Xander: A legal defense fund for undocumented immigrants in memory of her dead daughter.

Gwen: You think she’s telling the truth?

Xander: She says she wasn’t the best mum to her daughter, and now she regrets it. Just like jack will regret it if he turns his back on you. And if he can’t see that for himself, I’m gonna make him see it.

Brady: I’m pretty sure that kristen wants me to help her see rachel. How am I s–how am I supposed to do that knowing that she just attempted to kidnap her?

Chloe: You can’T. I mean, how can you?

Brady: I mean, as it is, I have to sit that little girl down and tell her that her that her mom is not the pied piper, and that her mom is not gonna take her on some special trip. And that her mom isn’t coming back.

Chloe: I’m sorry that you have to deal with that.

Brady: I can’t let kristen get back into our lives. Chloe, I’m still in recovery. That woman is like a line of cocaine for me.

Chloe: So are you saying that you’re not going to go see her?

Philip: I told you over and over what chloe means to me. Are you really saying to my face that you’re glad she’s with brady?

Victor: For your sake, yes.

Philip: Damn you. I hope whoever takes over titan tries to burn it to the ground. I hope you have to stand there looking at the flames as I throw gasoline on the fire. Like many people with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis

Jack: How could you possibly want me to give gwen another chance?

Abigail: I just think in putting this all together, I finally understand what happened the day gwen fell. You know, after you asked her to move into the house, she went to the hospital because she started having contractions and dr. Snyder did a sonogram and saw that there was unfortunately no longer a fetal heartbeat. So gwen came to the dimera house looking for chad, and I think if she had found him before me, she might’ve told the truth and said she had lost the baby. And then I wouldn’t have had that argument with her, and she wouldn’t have fallen down the stairs, and then maybe all of this pain and misery might’ve been avoided.

Jack: What about all the pain and misery you’d already suffered? She drugged you. When gwen slept with your husband. When gwen tried to destroy your mother’s and my marriage, abigail. Gwen has tried her best to tear this family apart. And even if she’d just begun to see the error of her ways, there’s a choice to be made here. It’s finally clear to me now, thanks to you. So please don’t apologize to me for making me see the light. Just–just accept my humble appreciation that you care about me enough that you’re helping me to see.

[Sentimental music]

Gwen: Where are you going?

Xander: To talk some sense into jack.

Gwen: It won’t work. And xander, you’ve already done so much for me already.

Xander: Hey, I’m doing this for him too. I know jack. He’s hot under the collar right now, but he doesn’t wanna lose you. And I’m gonna make him see it. Okay? You’ll be okay.

[Heartfelt music]

Gabi: I cannot believe it. Last night I thought I lost you forever, and now here you are in my arms, in my house. Carmine’s dead, and philip’s dead in the water. Company’s still mine.

Jake: Gabi, I don’t wanna burst your little happy bubble, but you know, we did lose our jobs, right?

Gabi: We’ll find a new partner for gabi chic.

Jake: Hope so. Right now, the only partner I can focus on is you.

Ava: You don’t believe me. Now, that would be your problem.

Melinda: Seems to me like it’s yours.

Ava: Why? It’s my word against carmine’s, and he is dead. How are you gonna make a murder charge stick?

Melinda: You leave that to me.

Ava: I take it you’re aware of my family history?

Melinda: Oh, yes.

Ava: Then I suggest you tread carefully.

Melinda: Is that a threat?

Ava: It’s a fact. I know a certain amount about the law. And if you bring charges against me, I’ll walk, and you’ll be humiliated. So you can throw me in front of a grand jury if you feel so inclined. If I, were you, I’d just be happy that ava vitali helped me bring the man who shot the mayor to justice. And that kristen dimera is behind bars. And I would definitely quit while I was ahead.

Xander: To have a word with you about forgiving gwen. And I’m not leaving till you see my way of thinking.

Gwen: I know that you have appropriated xander cook’s $1 million. And I am here to explain to you why you need to give that back to him.

Ava: Ugh. Do you two ever read or watch tv or anything? Or do you just go at it like rabbits?

Gabi: What the hell are you doing here?

Ava: Oh, well, I decided you were right. That trask wouldn’t believe my true story and my statement. So I told her what she wanted to hear. And here I am. So pat yourself on the back, little gabi gabster– you finally did a good deed.

Gabi: Does rafe know that you’re here? Because I seriously doubt you’re still welcome in his house.

Ava: Oh, does he know that you’re here? Because same. Gosh, you know what, I’m so in need of a shower, so I hope you’ve already had yours because there’s not gonna be any hot water left.

[Tense music]

Brady: No, thank you. Thank you for helping me figure out what I’m gonna do.

Chloe: I did that?

Brady: Yes, you did.

[Phone beeps] Please tell your client that I don’t want to see her nor do I wanna hear from her again. Thank you. Send. Yeah.

Chloe: Are you gonna be okay if I go?

Brady: Yeah. Yeah, I’m good. It’s just gonna take some time. I’m really glad you were here, though, when I got that call from that lawyer. You soothe me. You’re a good friend to me.

Chloe: Back at you.

Brady: Okay. You may go now. Go have a nice dinner with philip ’cause you deserve it.

[Pensive music]

Chloe: Oh, my. Okay, let me guess. You’re giving up corporate life to become a gardener?

Philip: Are you laughing at my symbolic gesture?

Chloe: And what exactly does it symbolize?

Philip: Me fixing the mistakes of my youth.

Paulina: I’m sorry.

Abe: Don’t be sorry. I just– I just wanna know, is something bothering you?

Paulina: Oh, okay. I will tell you, I’m worried about you.

Abe: I’m fine.

Paulina: See, see, that’s what I’m talking about. You–you were shot! You’re in a hospital bed. No, you’re not fine. And you–I’m so scared of you being so you. You’re gonna push yourself too hard and not take the time you need to recover and you’re gonna hurt yourself.

Abe: You heard what kayla said.

Paulina: I still think we should postpone the wedding.

Abe: Look, we–we have talked about this. There’s no reason to postpone the wedding.

Marlena: Look you are about to take a sacred oath to be–to be true to abe. And how can you do that knowing that you’re– you’re lying to him about being lani’s mother?

Theo: Okay, then what’s the problem?

Lani: I don’t know. I just– I really wanna make sure that it’s okay with chanel.

Chanel: Tthere you are. I expected you back 45 minutes ago.

Johnny: So did I.

Chanel: What happened?

Johnny: Well, I was delivering the cake for those people’s 56th anniversary.

Chanel: Yeah, that was six blocks away. It should’ve taken you like 15 minutes at most.

Johnny: Yeah, but when I dropped off the cake, they seemed like they wanted to tip me. Then I told them they didn’t have to, but it seemed like they really wanted to. Then they told me their family wasn’t coming and that they had a grandson my age. And then they wanted me to have a piece of the cake. Really good cake, by the way.

Chanel: You had cake with them?

Johnny: And looked at their wedding pictures.

Chanel: [Chuckles] Well, for a dimera, you’re kind of mush.

Johnny: It’s called empathy. And it’s what makes me such a brilliant director.

Chanel: And a really inefficient delivery boy. So was someone not home or did you just forget to deliver that?

Johnny: Oh, this? No, this is not a delivery. This is for you. See, I think it’s time for us to start getting serious.

Ciara: Ben, I know that you trust susan ’cause she helped you find me. And now you know that whatever vision she’s had has nothing to do with you. So please just hold on to that for me, okay?

Ben: I will. But it just doesn’t change the fact that she thinks that there’s somebody out there trying to harm our child.

Ciara: Yeah, but who? Who could it possibly be?

Ben: I don’t know. But I wish I did.

Susan: Dr. Marlena evans, I care about ben weston and ciara brady weston just as much as you do. It’s just what is coming towards them is a real doozy and it’s just too big, too dark, too powerful for even a big deal psychiatrist like yourself to handle on your own.

Marlena: How dare you presume to tell me what I can and can’t handle.

Susan: Well, I just meant–

Marlena: You know what? I’ve managed just fine for all these years without you. Why don’t you go back to memphis? I’m sure roger’s missing you.

Susan: No. I will not go back to memphis. Not until I figure out what this darkness is that I’m feeling. I just need to protect that little, innocent baby. And you know what? I don’t care if you approve or not.

Marlena: You… are not going anywhere.

Susan: [Gasps] Oh, lord almighty. I know it’s you. You’re the evil presence I felt. You’re the one that’s after the baby.

[Sinister music]

[Soft orchestration]

Chanel: It’s time for us to start getting serious? Is this a ring? Ooh, nice presentation.

Johnny: Just open it.

Chanel: Is this your subtle way of telling me you wish I was a blonde?

Johnny: No. It’s for the movie. Celeste is a blonde.

Chanel: Oh, well, now all I need are some high heeled sneakers.

Johnny: You’ll also need to learn how to use these tarot cards.

Chanel: Ugh.

Johnny: That’s the grim reaper.

Chanel: And grim doesn’t quite catch it.

Johnny: Okay, celeste believed in these cards. You can’t act like they smell bad.

Chanel: It is a skeleton with a scythe. I should smile?

Johnny: No, no, but… you have to treat them with respect, right? I mean, you have to believe that they have power.

Chanel: Okay.

Johnny: Seriously, chanel, it’s probably gonna be the hardest part about playing this character. You believe more than anybody else in the movie, in the occult. So you have to convince the audience that you truly, completely believe that the devil is in salem.

Ciara: It just doesn’t make sense.

Ben: What doesn’t make sense?

Ciara: Well, susan said that there’s someone out there who wants to harm our baby, right?

Ben: Right.

Ciara: But we don’t know who that person is. So maybe… this time she’s off her game. I mean, I know that you trust her and usually her premonitions are right, especially when she helped you find me but maybe this particular vision has her wires crossed.

Ben: What do you mean? That this vision could be about someone else?

Ciara: Well, I feel like that makes a little bit more sense. I mean, who would want to harm an innocent baby and why do they want to come after our baby? Our baby, ben.

Marlena: Susan. Susan, you– you think I’m an evil presence? That’s really ridiculous.

Susan: No, it’s not. And it’s the truth.

Marlena: The truth. That I would want to harm ben’s baby? Look, I know you believe in these premonitions, but I just–I don’t know how you could say that to a friend.

Susan: Oh! You are not my friend!

Marlena: You don’t think I’m your friend marlena?

Susan: Nope. Uh-uh. Dr. Marlena and I are friends, but you, you are not her.

Marlena: Susan.

Susan: Mm-mm, mm-mm! You can’t fool me. I know the truth and you– you are the devil incarnate.

[Sinister music]

Paulina: Yes, I just remembered I have an errand to run.

Theo: You know, if you’re worried about chanel, I can talk to her, see if she’s upset.

Lani: You wouldn’t mind?

Theo: You know what? I think sweet bits is just closing. I’m gonna go see if I can catch her.

Paulina: You know, you’re a really great brother.

Theo: You’re not too bad yourself.

[Both chuckle] You know, sometimes I think about what it was like when I didn’t know that I had a sister and how much better everything is now that I do.

Lani: I know exactly what you mean.

Theo: But we are brother and sister, and nothing can ever change that.

Lani: Mm-mm.

Theo: [Chuckles]

Ben: And here’s another thing. Ciara, back when I was looking for you, susan didn’t just tell me that you weren’t alive. I mean, she did everything in her power to try and help us. She tried to have more visions, she tried to understand what the visions meant. And ultimately, that is what led me to you. This woman does not quit. Which means when we have this baby, we’re gonna be a whole lot better off. We’re gonna know a lot more. We’re gonna be ready for whatever else happens. I promise you.

Ciara: Mm-hmm.

Ben: I promise you.

Ciara: Yeah, I guess that’s kind of, um, comforting.

[Knocking on door] Who is that? Did you– are you expecting company?

Shawn: Ben, ciara, you guys home?

Marlena: Susan, you need to calm down, you’ve– you’ve worked yourself up into a state.

Susan: Mm-mm, mm-mm. No, you have. Mm-mm, and I don’t mean dr. Marlena evans, because she is not the person I’m looking at. She’s not even the person I’m talking to. You’re not even a person. You’re just a thing!

Marlena: You don’t think that I’m marlena?

Susan: No, no. I know you’re not.

Marlena: Oh, susan.

[Sighs]

[Sinister music]

Demon marlena: You’re right.

Susan: [Gasps] I knew it! I knew it! I know evil when I see it, and you, you are evil as they come.

Demon marlena: I’ve dealt with people like you before, you know. People that have a little bit of psychic power and think they can best me. Celeste, now you. Let me tell you something. Your paltry powers can’t begin to compare to mine. And you will regret the day you ever took me on. I am going to unleash the full force of my powers and there is nothing you or anybody can do to stop me.

[Sinister music] This is the sound of nature breathing.

Belle: How could susan do that? Ugh, I could just strangle her.

Ciara: Well, she really did believe what she was saying.

Belle: I don’t care what she believes. You don’t come here and intentionally scare a woman who just found out she’s having a baby. Ben, I hope you threw her out.

Ciara: Well, she wasn’t trying to scare us. Really, she was just trying to warn us.

Ben: She knew ciara was pregnant. Nobody told her. She just knew.

Belle: And you believe her?

Ben: I mean, she was right before. She knew that ciara wasn’t dead. And to be honest with you, I would have never found her if it wasn’t for susan.

Shawn: Okay, okay, but there’s another way of looking at this here. I mean, these premonitions, these visions that she has, I mean, they’re mystical. They’re vague.

Ben: I know.

Shawn: So that at the end of the day she can make it up, and she can say that she was right to whatever extent.

Ben: I disagree.

Shawn: Okay, well, even if you do believe that she sees these things, you can’t trust her. You cannot trust her. I mean, she had will believing he was ej for years.

Belle: And like shawn said, everything she says is vague, generic. I mean, even this threat: Someone wants to harm your baby. That could mean anything.

Ciara: Yeah, well, ben said that she’s gonna keep trying to figure out what’s going on and who this person is.

Belle: Which means she’s just gonna keep trying to push her way into your life. God, I’m so mad that she came here and scared you like that. And now you’re telling me she’s just gonna keep doing it?

Ciara: No, no, belle, like I said, she wasn’t trying to scare us per se. She was just genuinely trying to warn us.

Belle: About some vague threat. I mean, listen, did she say what you’re supposed to do about it? You wanna tie some garlic around your neck or something?

Ben: I don’t think us talking about it right now is really helping.

Shawn: I agree, I agree.

Belle: Okay, all right, fine. Well, no, just one more thing though. Please tell me she’s going back to memphis and isn’t gonna set up some psychic network here in salem.

Ben: I know everybody thinks susan’s like this big hoax. I get it, you know? But there’s something else I didn’t tell you. This woman reached out and put her hand on ciara’s stomach and whatever susan was feeling caused her to faint, knocked out. It freaked me out. And that is why I went to your mother. And I asked her to come over here.

Ciara: She took susan home with her.

Belle: Oh, well, if anyone can talk some sense into her, it’s my mom.

Ciara: Yeah.

Demon marlena: Don’t try to reach for your phone. Nobody can help you now.

Susan: [Grunts]

[Sinister music]

[Knocking on door]

Susan: [Groans]

Lani: No.

Abe: Look, I’m your father. I gave you life. And we’re only talking about 10 minutes.

Lani: No, dad. Look, you’ve been shot and you’re in the hospital and on a restricted diet. So I am not going to buy you a pastrami on rye, russian style. No.

Abe: I am going to be skin and bones by the time I leave here.

Lani: Well, just imagine how good you’re gonna look at your wedding.

Abe: Oh, so now you’re trying to bodyshame me.

Lani: No! Dad, I’m just trying to change the subject. Okay? So have you heard from brandon? Is–will he be able to make it?

Abe: No. No. It turns out and you– you’re not gonna believe this, but he is going on safari with celeste.

Lani: Seriously?

Abe: When they were taking care of theo, when he first got in south africa, apparently they just really hit it off.

Lani: Okay. Well, it’s hard for me to imagine those two as friends. I mean, from everything that I’ve heard about her, she’s, uh, quite the character.

Chanel as celeste: Stefano. You should not have snuffed out that candle. I am afraid you have invited the evil to come in. There may be no stopping it now. Stefano? Johnny!

Johnny: Uh, what?

Chanel: It’s your line.

Johnny: Oh, sorry, my bad.

Chanel: Are you sure you wanna do this? I mean, stefano was your grandfather. This could be weird for you.

Johnny: No, I wanted to do the movie and trust me, it’s gonna get a lot weirder than just reading his lines.

[Clears throat] I want you to get rid of these cards and the rest of your voodoo superstition. I have a more important task for you. I want you to help me with marlena.

Chanel as celeste: Stefano, please, you must not continue on this quest.

Johnny as stefano: Celeste!

Chanel as celeste: No, believe me, I am not speaking out of jealousy. No, it’s fear. Genuine fear that you have unleashed something terrible. And if you continue to fight for marlena then–

Theo: Grandma? Is that you? My nunormal?

Theo: My uncle chad told me that you’d be playing my grandma celeste in johnny’s movie. But I guess I just have to see it to believe it.

Johnny: Theo, man, it’s been forever. It’s great to see you.

Theo: And now you’re directing a movie.

Johnny: Yeah, yeah, pretty exciting stuff. And I think chanel’s gonna be fantastic.

Theo: With a lot of work, maybe.

Chanel: Um, what is that supposed to mean?

Johnny: My grandma grew up in new orleans. She has a creole accent.

Chanel: You didn’t say anything about doing an accent.

Johnny: I guess I didn’t think about it.

Theo: Don’t worry. I’d be happy to coach you.

Chanel: Great, thanks.

Chanel: And what would that be?

Theo: Talk to lani.

Chanel: Lani?

Theo: She’s feeling kinda weird about this whole matron of honor thing.

Abe: Speaking of celeste, wonder how she feels about me getting married again.

Lani: I’m sure she is really happy for you, dad.

Abe: What?

Lani: I’m just thinking about how her and aunt paulina are gonna get along. Given everything that I’ve heard about her.

Abe: That should make family reunions pretty interesting.

Lani: Speaking of, where is aunt paulina?

Abe: She said she had an errand to run.

Lani: Ah, probably something about the wedding?

Abe: Mm, maybe.

Lani: Dad, what’s wrong?

Abe: All day long, she seemed nervous, on edge. She kept trying to fluff up my pillows and ask if there’s anything else that I wanted.

Lani: Dad, she’s trying to take care of you.

Abe: I know. She said she still thought that we should postpone the wedding.

Lani: Well, I can see why she feels that way. Dad, when you got shot, she was so scared she was gonna lose you. So you might have to prepare yourself for her being kind of over-protective for a while.

Abe: Yeah, that’s what she said. And she was worried that it might be too soon, that I wouldn’t be up to– for the ceremony and everything. But…that’s only part of it. It seems like there’s something else that’s– that’s going on with her.

Marlena: Paulina, how nice to see you.

Paulina: Well, you may not feel that way once you hear what I’ve come to say.

Marlena: Come in.

Paulina: I’ve decided that I have to keep my secret. I cannot tell abe he’s not lani’s father. I can’t do it to him and I cannot do it to lani.

Marlena: Well, I didn’t say it was going to be easy I’m afraid that if you don’t tell them, your marriage to abe may be doomed.

Paulina: You don’t understand, I heard theo talking to lani. I can see how much she loves him, how much she needs him. I’ve decided that neither one of them can know the truth.

Marlena: Well, that might not be up to you.

Susan: [Groans softly]

Paulina: What was that? Serena: It’s my 3:10

Marlena: What was what?

Paulina: I heard a sound like–like someone was groaning.

Marlena: Groaning?

Susan: [Groans softly]

Paulina: Like that! Oh, my goodness!

Shawn: So do you think your mom’s gonna tell her to go back to memphis and take her craziness with her? Or am I gonna have to go over there and do it myself?

Ben: I think we should still have a toast. Sorry, no champagne, but–

Shawn: Are you kidding me? Beer’s great.

Ciara: Oh, no!

Belle: You can’t have that.

Ciara: And shawn.

Shawn: Uh, yeah, ciara?

Ciara: I know that you are just, you know, worried about me and ben and the baby, but I think we can handle susan our way.

Shawn: Oh, look at you. You’re all mature. Not that long ago, you would’ve just told me to butt the hell out.

Ciara: Oh, good, so you got the memo.

Shawn: Yes, consider me butted out.

Ciara: Good. All right, so how ’bout that toast? Here is to nine months of sparkling water.

Shawn: And to a healthy and happy baby who’s picked himself or herself two really great parents.

Ciara: Whoo, yes, I sure hope so. Because when I got those test results back, I was like, “oh, my god, I’m so happy. But I’m also having no clue about being a mother and I’m feeling so much elation and I’m terrified at the same time.” All in one flat second. Whoo!

Ben: Cheers to that.

Belle: I know that feeling. I actually think I know something that might help.

Ciara: [Chuckles]

[Elevator dings]

Lani: Hey, chanel. I’m sorry, visiting hours, um, they just ended.

Chanel: Oh, well, um, I brought these for your dad.

Lani: Oh, that’s– that’s so sweet, um, thank you. I will make sure he gets these.

Chanel: But I actually came by to see you.

Lani: Ah, theo. He spoke with you, right?

Chanel: Yeah. And he told me that you felt weird about being my mom’s matron of honor, but it’s fine. It really is. I know things were crazy the night your dad got shot.

Lani: Yeah, um, they were. See, when your mom came over to talk to me that night. You know what?

Chanel: What?

Lani: Even that– even that was odd. She just–she showed up and she was so serious, not herself at all. And she said she had to talk to me and I have to tell you, I thought it was a lot heavier than her asking me to be her matron of honor.

Chanel: So she went by your apartment to ask you to be her matron of honor?

Lani: Yes, but she never got the chance. First, the twins woke up, and then, well, eli came home and told us about my dad. And then we rushed to the hospital.

Chanel: Mama, I–I know you’ve been through a lot and I’m so glad that abe’s going to be okay. But hearing that you want lani by your side at the wedding and not me, that really hurts. Couldn’t–couldn’t you have told me first?

Paulina: Oh, baby, I wasn’t planning it. When I first got engaged, of course I thought you would be my maid of honor. But in the past 36 hours, lani and I, we’ve been through so much. Because her father, he was the one who was hurt and she was so terribly, terribly worried. I just want to extend myself to her in some way. To distract her, you know?

Lani: But she didn’t ask me at the hospital either. I mean, now that I think about it, we were all so worried about my dad that I think maybe she forgot that she had to talk to me. But I had to ask her. Like, I needed to know what she wanted to talk to me about.

Chanel: Well, you know what, lani? I’m glad we talked about this.

Paulina: Well, what have we here?

Marlena: Oh. This is susan. Susan, meet paulina. Paulina, susan.

Paulina: Pleased to meet you, susan. Oh, well, the– the cat, is she okay? I never heard a cat make a sound like that before. Is she all right?

Marlena: Yeah. Well, well, she’s had some problems. Health issues, mental issues, dental issues.

Paulina: Oh, yeah, I can see her teeth are a little odd. Never seen buck teeth on a cat before.

Marlena: She’s not doing so well. I’m afraid we may get to the point where I have to put her down.

Shawn: Wow, ben and ciara really tore out of here.

Belle: Yeah, I think they wanted to get to the bookstore before it closed.

Shawn: To buy that amazing book that you recommended?

Belle: Yes, I hope it helps.

Shawn: You know, I can’t help but feel like ciara regretted telling us about susan.

Belle: Well, I don’t know. I think she–she needed to talk about it and then maybe realize she didn’t want anyone to know about it. I think that we should go see my mom.

Shawn: No, ciara told me to butt out.

Belle: We’re not butting in. We’re just gonna go and see if that premonition was as bad as it seems.

Shawn: Okay, well, I guess doesn’t hurt to try. But I’m gonna have a hard time keeping my mouth shut and not telling susan a piece of my mind, all right?

Belle: Okay, let’s go.

Paulina: Well, I’m–I’m sorry about your cat and I don’t wanna keep you, but I just want you to know that I changed my mind.

Marlena: For the record, I think you’re making a mistake, but of course, it’s entirely up to you.

Paulina: But you’re–you’re not gonna tell anyone are you?

Marlena: Oh, no. No, of course not. But I’d still be glad to officiate at your wedding if you want me.

Paulina: Well, it’s very important to abe and to me. Well, I hope your cat feels– feels much better. Okay, well, night.

Marlena: Good night.

Demon marlena: Got more work to do there. But right now, susan, you are my top priority

Lani: Actually I’m the one who did all the talking. I still wanna know how you feel about all this.

Chanel: Lani, you don’t have to worry about how I feel. You have nothing to feel bad about. All you did was say yes when she asked you. So if anyone’s to blame, it’s her. No, that came out wrong. I just– now that I know that she went to see you, made a special trip to ask you, that means that this is obviously what she wants.

Lani: Are you sure?

Chanel: It’s her day. It’s all about making her happy.

Theo: So you and chanel, uh?

Johnny: Uh, yeah, yeah, we’ve been dating for a couple of months. Is that weird for you? I know you guys used to date.

Theo: Not for that long, no.

Johnny: Good, I don’t want anything to be awkward.

Theo: No, no. What would be awkward would be running into ciara and ben.

Marlena: Oh, yes. Well, you know what? They’ve got nothing to worry about, but they’re so terrified. I mean, the fact is, susan has no idea what she’s talking about.

Ciara: Hi, theo, johnny.

Johnny: Hey, how’s it going?

Ciara: Good. Um, I didn’t know you were back in town.

Theo: I flew back when my dad got shot.

Ciara: How’s he doing?

Theo: A lot better. He’s actually getting married next week. That is, if somebody doesn’t, you know, kidnap his bride on the way to the church.

Johnny: Hey, king of cups! That’s a great card! That’s a great card.

Ben: Uh, would you give your dad our best, please?

Ciara: Yeah. Um, ben, we should probably get going. We just came into town to pick up a book so–

Theo: Oh, I’ll get it. “The abcs of having a baby?” You guys are having a baby?

Lani: Well, I’m glad this didn’t screw things up between us. We are cousins and about to become sisters.

Chanel: I always wanted a sister. But I already told you that.

Lani: [Chuckles] Yeah, you did. And I’ve always wanted one too. I will leave these with my dad’s night nurse and I will see you later. Bye.

Chanel: Night.

Paulina: Chanel? Oh, what are you doing here?

Chane: Leaving.

Marlena: I promise you, nobody has to worry about susan. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta get this cat to the shelter.

Belle: Oh, wait, you’re– you’re turning her in already?

Marlena: Well, I’m–I’m sure somebody’s missing her.

Belle: Well, what if they can’t find her owner? Don’t they sometimes put them down?
