Sharon: Hi. There they are.

Tessa: Hi.

Sharon: Hi. Oh, my goodness. Look at this sweet little angel. She’s so beautiful. Could she be more perfect?

Mariah: Uh, well, looks can be deceiving. Remember this is your first time alone with her and she can be a handful.

Sharon: Oh, not this little sweetie.

Tessa: Oof. Count down to the wake-up call.

Mariah: Mm-hmm.

Sharon: Okay, you guys don’t scare me. We are going to have a great time and I’m ready for whatever the evening brings.

Christine: Okay, so have you turned up anything else? Anything new come to light? I am looking for anything else I can use in court.

Chance: I am re-evaluating all the evidence, doing a deeper dive. Trying to follow up on some new leads as well.

Christine: Then chance, we need to go back over this entire investigation. Maybe there’s something we overlooked. If we’re gonna win this case, I need a rock solid prosecution.

Chance: Yeah, of course. I mean, I’m turning over every stone, but… what’s with this new attitude? I thought you were feeling confident about this trial.

Christine: I am. It’s just michael’s latest strategy is a real doozy. God, of all the defenses I thought he would try, the last thing I ever expected him to claim was that the deceased is still alive.

Chance: Yeah.

Tucker: Look at that one. Banging away at them bongos. He’s got perfect time.

Ashley: He’s so adorable. I’m so impressed that you were able to stay that whole time. Especially considering it was maracas day.

Tucker: Well, it gave it a latin flair.

Ashley: Did it give you a headache? Did you tell everybody, all the grown-ups that you were a big fancy music producer?

Tucker: No, I didn’t have to, the teacher recognized me.

Ashley: Really?

Tucker: Yeah. Even played one of my old tunes for the kids to rattle along to. Next time, I’m gonna bring a playlist. Tucker mccall’s greatest hits.

Ashley: Next time?

Tucker: Hmm. I loved it. I’m thinking of becoming a regular.

Ashley: Okay, seriously. Who are you? Because the tucker mccall that I used to know would never have the patience to sit through a toddler’s music class with maracas. So, what’s come over you?

Tucker: You, wonderful you.

Abby: Can you believe how quickly dominic crashed? That music play group just wore him out.

Devon: Oh, I know. Exercising all that talent is bound to tire him out.

Abby: Oh, yeah. Well, I’m sure his grandpa is probably exhausted too.

Devon: Yeah. I was very surprised that tucker wanted to come and hang out in class today.

Abby: Yeah, louise said that he was already there when they got there. That he stayed the whole entire class. He was riveted the whole time and that he was, like, taking pictures and recording video.

Devon: He’s like a proud grandpa.

Abby: Okay. Can you believe this? I mean, tucker playing the role of doting grandpa? I don’t know. I mean, at first, I thought that maybe this was all just part of a plan to get you to forgive him or some sort of scheme to win my mom back, but maybe he actually wants to be a real part of dominic’s life and yours.

Devon: Yeah, I think he does. He’s definitely been putting forth the effort and he seems more sincere about it these days than he has before, so. I don’t know, maybe your mom’s having a positive effect on him.

Abby: But do you think it’s actually possible that tucker is a changed man?

Devon: Hey, anything is possible, right?

Abby: I want nothing more to be true. But I just– I can’t trust it. I’m afraid that all of this is part of some con to win my mom back. And screw her over even worse this time.

Kyle: Okay, we’re in. Now what?

Jack: I don’t even know what we’re looking for, but I guarantee you, we will know it when we see it. When migraine strikes, you’re faced with a choice.

Chance: Yeah, this new defense strategy is definitely surprising. You can’t charge her with murder if there’s no murder. I didn’t see that one coming.

Christine: Which is why we need to be doubly sure where our evidence stands and where we need to shore up. It’s all highly incriminating, but it’s mostly circumstantial.

Chance: Well, we have the physical fight. We have an outraged diane who was threatening a woman who ends up dead a few hours later. We have the letter that phyllis wrote and the voicemail that she left michael.

Christine: In what was probably her last call? And phyllis was clearly leaving a cry for help.

Chance: Her cell phone wasn’t recovered in the fire, but we are reaching out to the phone company to see if she reached out to anybody else. I think it’s ironic that she voiced her fear of diane to michael, who ends up being her defense attorney.

Christine: Yeah, which makes me wonder how he could believe in her innocence so passionately.

Chance: Maybe it’s because all of our evidence goes squarely to motive. There’s no direct proof of murder.

Christine: What about the strychnine that was purchased under diane’s name?

Chance: Well, unfortunately, there is no record of her receiving it by delivery or picking it up. And there’s no prints on the vial either.

Christine: Then how did she get it in her possession? And how did she touch the vial without leaving fingerprints? Obviously, she used gloves.

Chance: I mean, that’s the only way. But why would she think she needed gloves? And more to the point, after she used the poison and achieved her goal, why did she keep the vial?

Christine: God, see, it’s– it’s discrepancies like these that can give a jury, reasonable doubt.

Chance: Yeah. There are enough holes in this case to give michael some leverage with a jury. I mean, maybe there is something to the possibility to an extreme setup. Should I look into that?

Christine: Wait, are you starting to buy the thought that phyllis is still alive?

Chance: I think it’s a stretch. I think we should keep looking into stark. If diane and stark were working together, then maybe he crossed her. There could be something there. I don’t know, but I know there’s more to the story than what we know.

Christine: Okay, look, I am open to the fact that diane had a co-conspirator. I mean, there are elements here that she couldn’t have done it alone. Oh, god, and what about the leak at the department? I mean, someone spoke about the murder weapon. No one on the outside knew about the scissors. So we have to plug that hole A.S.A.P.

[ Phone chiming ]

Chance: Oh, excuse me one second. I gotta take this. Yeah.

Kyle: Michael hit the jackpot when he linked stark’s P.O. Box to this place.

Jack: He did. I wish they still had security footage from that period. At least the manager told me he rented this room to a spencer jenkins.

Kyle: He used mom’s last name and reversed his initials. J.S. To S.J. Not much of a con man after all.

Jack: At least I talked him into letting us in here.

Kyle: How much did that cost you?

Jack: I don’t know what the going rate is, but I paid a lot more. Here. One of these.

Kyle: Oh, you’re not too bad at this detective thing. You’ve thought of everything.

Jack: We can’t overlook anything. No matter how small, no matter how seemingly inconsequential. Start looking.

Kyle: I know a lot of time has passed since stark was here and we don’t even know if phyllis was with him. The motel staff has probably cleaned this place multiple times, not to mention all the guests checking in and out.

Jack: True, but we still could find something. This isn’t exactly the grand phoenix. I’m sure their housekeeping department is not meticulous. All we need to do is find something phyllis left behind that we can pull dna from and we prove that she’s still alive and that your mother is innocent.

Abby: I’m not trying to minimize tucker’s affection for you or for dominic. Don’t get me wrong. I’m just saying wherever he’s concerned, caution is not a bad idea.

Devon: I completely agree with you. I’ve had my guard up since he showed up to town and put a plant in our company. You know? But his priorities have seemed to have changed since he sold his company. And regardless of how we feel, he and your mom are getting a lot closer.

Abby: I’m afraid you’re right. My mom never would have moved him into the abbott house unless there’s something more going on between them. Is everything okay? Are you late for a meeting or something?

Devon: Yeah. No, I’m waiting for a package. But, how do you really feel about this? About them progressing? You know, if they keep moving forward into a real serious relationship? And it’s your mom and my dad.

Ashley: So, you’re in such a great mood because of me?

Tucker: Not quite that simple. I’m a very complex person, as you know.

Ashley: Oh, yes, I definitely know that. So then why are you in such a good mood?

Tucker: I don’t know. Seeing dom’s musical gifts really uplifted me. And then there’s your invitation to me.

Ashley: Huh? What invitation was that?

Tucker: I seem to recall you inviting me to move from the guest room to your bedroom.

Ashley: Oh, yeah. That invitation.

Tucker: Yes, yes, yes, that invitation. I, um…

[ Ashley laughing ] I haven’t had a chance to pack my stuff up, but if you’d rather I go slowly, I can just move a few pairs of skivvies down with me.

Ashley: Oh, I like slowly. But I think we could do better than just skivvies.

Diane: Oh, hello love birds. I hope you enjoyed your walk. I can’t wait to be out there joining you, getting my steps around the neighborhood.

Ashley: Don’t get your hopes up. Not with that ankle monitor on. Actually, maybe you should give it a shot and see how quickly they throw you back in jail.

Diane: Sorry, it’s not going to happen. Besides, what would you and tucker do without jack and me around to set an example of what true love and happiness really looks like?

Tucker: Okay. Why don’t we head upstairs and pick up where we left off?

Ashley: Yeah. Actually, I could think of a better idea. Look, why don’t we leave the house entirely and get away from this insanity?

Diane: Oh, wait, wait. No, no, no. Don’t– don’t go so quickly. I was about to go through these bridal magazines. You see, I do have a wedding to plan. And I have to pick out the perfect dress for when I become mrs. Jack abbott. Hey, ashley, maybe you can help me.

Mariah: Can you believe it? It’s our first official date night since becoming moms.

Tessa: Thank you for babysitting, sharon. Uh, are you sure you’re up for it?

Sharon: Am I up for it? I think the real question here is, are you? You two seem a little nervous to me.

Mariah: Nervous. No, get out of here. That’s crazy. Um, just so you know, you have plenty of extra bottles in case she wakes up hungry.

Tessa: Oh, yeah, and her bunny is in her carrier. It really helps calm her down when she gets fussy.

Mariah: Oh, and I almost forgot, you made sure that the car seat base is installed properly, right?

Sharon: Relax. In fact, one of G.C.P.D’s finest was in today and I had him take a look at it. Because, um, somehow I knew you would ask.

Mariah: Okay, good. Well, I’m glad chance had a moment to spare.

Sharon: Actually, it wasn’t chance. But I could ask him to come by here and just double-check it if it makes you more comfortable.

Mariah: No, no, it’s– it’s fine. I’m sorry. I know we’re being overbearing.

Tessa: It’s our first night away from aria since she’s been born. And you know, all she’s ever known is– is us and being with us.

Mariah: And we’re not worried about you. I mean, you’re basically the best mom on the planet and you have tons of baby experience. Although, it’s been a minute.

Sharon: Oh, my gosh. Relax, will you? Watching after a baby is like riding a bike. You never forget.

Mariah: I’ve never seen you ride a bike.

Tessa: But you have been through this experience many times. For us, it’s just, uh, I mean, every day suddenly we have to develop this new skill just to catch up with whatever aria has learned that day. I mean, as opposed to who she was last week.

Mariah: I can’t wait for that to taper off. I just feel like she’s learning way too much, way too fast.

Sharon: Really, mariah? Because this is only the beginning. That gets even worse. Your kids continue learning more and more.

Mariah: Okay. How do you keep up?

Sharon: You don’T. You just hold on for dear life and then, one day, they pick up and go to the university of michigan and rarely call you again.

Mariah: Okay, so I’m guessing faith hasn’t called in a couple of days.

Tessa: Maybe we should stay home tonight. I mean, what if we miss something?

Mariah: Yeah. You know, mom, uh, maybe we should just stay with aria. We could go home, we could take a nap, you know, save up that energy for aria’s next big surprise.

Tessa: I mean, you’re right. I mean, what if there’s an emergency, we don’t want to be all tired and worn out–

Sharon: No, I won’t hear of this. Date night is happening. That’s it.

Chance: We got a new development.

Christine: What happened?

Chance: So, remember the night of the gala, I had a stakeout, right? And I was frustrated as hell because by the time I got to the athletic club, phyllis had already been poisoned, collapsed, taken by the E.M.T.’S. All that.

Christine: Yeah, right. But what’s the new development?

Chance: It turns out the guys I was supposed to be watching couldn’t have been anywhere near that spot that night. Chicago P.D. Had already picked them up. And here’s the kicker. The call that sent me out there in the first place came in the very same day from a phone line at the athletic club. It was one of my cases so I personally had to follow up on it.

Christine: So, what you’re saying is someone wanted you far away from the event that night.

Kyle: Nothing. Nothing at all. I don’t even know what we’re looking for anymore.

Jack: What do you make of this?

Kyle: Long red hairs. What does that prove? I’m sure a lot of redheads rent motel rooms.

Jack: No, that’s true, but it’s something we can work with. This is a dna sample. All we have to do is compare that to a sample from a close relative.

Kyle: Summer.

Jack: Exactly. Can you find something of hers? A hairbrush, a water bottle? Something we can pull dna from.

Kyle: That shouldn’t be a problem.

Jack: Good. Maybe we just caught a break.

Kyle: Okay.

Diane: Diane abbott. Mrs. Diane jenkins abbott. No, I– I should probably drop the jenkins. I should ask you to be my maid of honor. Wouldn’t you love standing next to me–

Ashley: You know what I would love to do…

Tucker: Ah, ah, ah. Here we go.

Ashley: I can’t take any more of you.

Diane: Bye.

Ashley: I can’t stand her. Why did you take me out of there? I just wanna kill her.

Tucker: I know I wanna kill her. Let’s kill her.

Ashley: Oh, shut up. Mm.

Tucker: Let’s go somewhere and celebrate.

Ashley: What are we celebrating?

Tucker: ‘Cause we can go somewhere and celebrate together.

Ashley: Okay, let’s go.

Devon: What’s so funny?

Abby: Well, apparently, um, it’s from one of the dads in dominic’s music group. Tucker was a big hit in the music class today.

Devon: Really? How so?

Abby: Well, the teacher recognized tucker and he played one of his old songs for the kids.

Devon: Gosh.

Abby: Okay. What is up with this package? You’re very concerned with it. What are you waiting for?

Devon: I’m waiting for the courier.

Abby: Oh, you’re waiting for your courier. That’s very fancY.

Devon: What do you mean?

Abby: Uh, most people have a delivery guy deliver their package and you have a courier. Ooh.

Devon: Gosh. Really? You’re making fun of me. You’re an abbott and a newman and you own the most popular restaurant in town and you live in a penthouse that looks over the city, so… you wanna talk who’s fancy? Look in the mirror.

Abby: Oh, maybe so. But my packages are delivered by a delivery guy. Not a courier. Devon: Oh, yeah.

Abby: Not a courier. I’m so fancy.

Devon: This is a very special package. So it requires some professional assistance.

Abby: A special package?

Devon: That’s right.

Abby: Ooh, could it be a gift? Devon, you shouldn’t have. Oh, is it jewelry?

Devon: It is not jewelry. No.

Abby: It’s not jewelry, okay. Is it keys to a brand new car?

Devon: No.

Abby: Ooh, a boat? A boat? Did you buy us a yacht?

Devon: Yes, I did.

Abby: You did?

Devon: How’d you know? They’re gonna deliver it right to the front door.

Abby: I love it. Ooh, or it could be something for dominic. Maybe that big stuffed elephant that we saw last week.

Devon: It’s not that, but that’s a great idea because he would love it.

Abby: He would love it. But I don’t know if there’s enough space in his room for it.

Devon: What are you trying to say? We need a bigger house.

Abby: Hm. Maybe. I mean, I don’t know. Not right now. I mean I love that we have this penthouse overlooking the city. But dominic, well, he might need a yard. You know, he loves the chancellor mansion. He loves the– the grounds and the pond and– and all of the things.

Devon: Okay. So, you’re saying we need to get a place like the chancellor mansion?

Abby: I’m just planting a seed because I think that our growing boy needs a lot of room.

Devon: Well, I agree with you. So the seed has been planted. I’ll think about it.

[ Knock on door ]

Abby: Oh, it’s your courier?

Devon: Oh, it’s my fancy courier.

Abby: It’s your fancy courier.

Devon: Something I’ve been waiting for my whole life is here.

[ Abby sighing ]

Devon: Thank you.

Sharon: I mean it, you two are not changing your plans. You are going on that date night tonight.

Mariah: Okay. But mom–

Sharon: No buts. Look as new moms, it’s important that you learn to take time out for yourselves. It’s gonna make you better parents and it’s the only way you’re gonna stay sane. And aria does deserve sane parents, wouldn’t you say? Besides, it’s way too early for you two to become helicopter moms?

Tessa: Oh, no. Mariah and I would never turn into those overprotecting, overbearing parents. Would we?

Mariah: No, nO. Well, no, way.

Sharon: Okay, you guys get out of here, would you? Go out and have a wonderful time. Aria and I are gonna be just fine. I promise you, you have nothing to worry about. Look, I’ve got it all planned. We’re gonna hang out here for a little while and then it’s back to my place for a girl’s night. Dinner, a bath, and some bedtime stories. We are going to have so much fun, aren’t we, aria? We are going to bond and play and really get to know each other.

Tessa: Oh, well.

Mariah: I guess we’re gonna have to force ourselves to have fun.

Tessa: But please, please call us if you need us.

Mariah: Or if aria needs anything.

Tessa: Oh, and have your camera ready because if she does something cute, can you please just send us–

Mariah: And she does cute stuff all the time.

Sharon: Okay, bye. Stay out as late as you want and have a good time. Look at you. You’re so adorable. We’re gonna have so much fun. Yeah, I’m gonna make you a really yummy dinneR. We’re gonna have a bath. Yeah, we’re gonna have a good time together.

Abby: Is it what I think it is?

Devon: You have to be more specific.

Abby: Open it, open, open it. It’s a court document. I knew it, ah.

Christine: So that tip call very well could have come from diane herself. The last thing she would have wanted was a detective like you anywhere near a party where she was gonna plan a murder.

Chance: Except it was a male caller. Brings us right back to stark. He took care of getting me out of the way. Christine, stark, and diane could have been in this together, right? He was in charge of putting up the smoke screen so their plan could go off without a hitch.

Christine: It’s possible. It’s also possible that that false tip was just a coincidence.

Chase: Are you still hung up on the idea that diane and diane alone committed this crime? I– I gotta tell you, I’m not so sure anymore.

[ Diane sighing ]

Diane: Hey, phyllis! I know you’re out there somewhere and believe me, you will be found!

[ Diane sighing ] I used to wait to run my dishwasher

Mariah: Okay, we said that we weren’t gonna be those parents. You know, the ones that need to check up on their kid, every few seconds.

Tessa: Yes. Yes, we did. Uh, but we made that promise before we met aria, the most special baby in the whole world. Oh, I can just see how it happens. It happens so easily.

Mariah: Yeah. Do you think this happens to everybody once they have a kid in their lives?

Abby: Look who it is.

Devon: It’s the new moms.

Abby: Let me guess. This is your first time out since baby, am I right?

Tessa: Is it too soon?

Mariah: You don’t suppose aria feels abandoned, do you?

Devon: Abandoned? No, of course not.

Abby: No. I mean, it’s only natural to feel a little bit nervous but it’s definitely not too soon.

Devon: Yeah. You have to enjoy your nights out. You’re new parents. Would you like to join us in the jazz lounge?

Mariah: Oh, sure, maybe.

Tessa: Yeah, later.

Abby: Okay, that was not even a little bit convincing. But trust me, I get it. It’s hard enough to focus on each other when all you can think about is that little baby at home.

Tessa: You’re so right.

Abby: Trust me, I get it. I’ve been there.

Devon: Baby steps, you two. The first hurdle is leaving the house and then before you know, we’ll be double dating before they go to preschool.

Abby: All right. Well, you know where we’ll be.

Devon: Yeah, join us if you want.

Mariah: Thank you, guys.

Abby: Have a good night.

Tessa and mariah: Bye.

Tessa: Oh, my gosh.

Mariah: Oh, isn’t she a sweetie?

Tessa: Oh, she’s so beautiful. Look at this one.

Mariah: Oh, my god, the bow. Okay, I wanna see that video that you took earlier. Oh, my goodness.

Christine: You’re not confident in our case anymore? Why not?

Chase: There’s too many holes, damn it.

Christine: Look, it may be circumstantial, but the evidence against diane is still very damning.

Chance: The more I learn, the more plausible it seems that phyllis and stark were in on this together. I mean they could have conspired to turn the tables on diane and frame her for murder. That’s the exact same thing diane did when she faked her death, right? It sounds like the kind of insane plan that stark and phyllis would come up with.

Christine: Don’t say you’re getting sucked into michael and jack’s hail mary to protect diane. Please chance, just look at the evidence.

Chance: I am looking at the evidence. You just said it’s all circumstantial.

Christine: Just because I want our case to be stronger doesn’t mean I doubt its veracity. I believe diane is guilty. What I doubt is that phyllis is somehow alive.

Chance: You don’t think she’d do that?

Christine: Phyllis could be ruthless and vindictive. I know that better than anyone. But all those years ago when diane faked her death, she was desperate, her back was against the wall. She was jobless. She was broke. She had nowhere else to turn. With phyllis, she was just simply ticked off at a few people in our lives. It’s not nearly the same level of panic and fury.

Chance: But you don’t think phyllis would take it that far?

Christine: Chance, I know phyllis would do anything to punish her enemies. I was a firsthand eyewitness to that. But no, I do not believe she would do that at the expense of hurting or losing her children.

Kyle: When do you think we’ll hear back from the lab?

Jack: I paid a hefty bonus to have the results expedited. We should know very soon.

Kyle: I’m glad I found that hairbrush, summer left in my car. If her hair and the strand of red hair we found in the motel show a family connection, then we’ll have our proof that she was in that room and that phyllis is probably alive.

Jack: How’s summer handling the news about phyllis?

Kyle: I honestly don’t know. She’s withdrawn and distant. No matter how hard I try, I can’t get through to her.

Jack: It’s got to be such a confusing time. My heart goes out to her.

Kyle: I want to help her, but there’s just so much I don’t understand.

Jack: Like what?

Kyle: I don’t know, there’s this tension between her and her brother. I caught them in a heated argument earlier. I don’t know if she’s processing the news that phyllis is alive or if she’s so deep in denial that she’s afraid to have hope.

Jack: If these dna results are what I suspect, it’ll go a long way toward turning summer around.

Kyle: Yeah, I hope so. Look, I am trying so hard to have an open mind, but the longer my wife suffers, I’m getting pretty pissed off at phyllis. How can she put her daughter through this? Especially after berating my mom for doing it to me.

Jack: Phyllis was determined that we not let diane back into our lives. But you’re right. It doesn’t begin to justify what she did.

Diane: Well, did you find anything? Please tell me it’s good news.

Jack: Hopefully, we’ll hear something soon.

Tessa: What is it?

Mariah: I don’t know. But you feel it too, don’t you?

Tessa: Yeah, something’s off, but not between us. We’re good, right?

Mariah: No. No, we’re– we’re solid.

Tessa: Yeah, something just feels kind of strange.

Mariah: I don’t know what it is, but it doesn’t feel like it used to. Maybe that it’s we’re more grown up or something. I mean, I’m sitting here debating whether or not to get a drink. I might just get a club soda.

Tessa: Yeah. No, me too. Because what if aria needs us? I mean, we can’t be all boozed up. We have to be responsible adults. Oh, damn, she’s probably missing us right now.

Mariah: Okay, tessa, we are doing it again. We’re making everything about her. What happened to us?

Tessa: Aria happened. Everything is about her because she deserves that.

Sharon: Ooh, aria, look at this. A surprise delivery. Isn’t that exciting? I wonder what it is. Let’s see. Oh, wow, champagne. How fun. And it’s nowhere near my birthday. So, I wonder who this is from? A card. “Memories are what life is made of.”

Devon: I feel closer to you than ever, dad. And I promise to honor your name in every way that I can and always make you proud. I love you.

Tucker: What?

Ashley: Hello there. What a surprise to find you guys here.

Abby: Hi.

Devon: How you guys doing?

Abby: Oh, my gosh. You look so pretty.

Abby: Wait, this is a coincidence, isn’t it? Right? Or was this planned?

Tucker: I’m innocent in this.

Ashley: Yeah, it was my idea. We didn’t know you were gonna be here.

Ashley: Yeah.

Abby: Well, uh, tucker, I hear you made quite the impression at dominic’s music class today.

Tucker: Oh, man, I had a ball. I was so proud of my talented little grandson.

Ashley: He did. He came home bragging saying that dom is a musical genius, of course.

Abby: Oh, well, no argument for me there.

Tucker: Did you hear that? Oh, and, uh, several of the parents and one of the nannies made a point of telling me what a wonderfully supportive mother you are. So, you’ve made a good impression.

Abby: Well, that’s really cool to hear.

Ashley: I see champagne. Are we crashing a celebration?

Devon: Yeah. Actually, we are celebrating something pretty big.

Ashley: Yeah, what is it?

Devon: As of today, I have, uh, officially changed my name to devon hamilton winters.

Ashley: Wow.

Diane: A strand of red hair? I don’t know. That could be a long shot that the dna will even match. So many people come in and out of a hotel room and even if it did match, would it be enough for christine to drop the case?

Jack: It’s a start. We know that stark checked into this motel after phyllis supposedly died. We have the motel records to prove that. And why did he need another room? He had perfectly good accommodations at the grand phoenix.

Kyle: And if there is a match, there’s no plausible way phyllis’s hair could have gotten in that room after she supposedly died.

Jack: Oh, it’s the lab. I’m gonna bet they have results. This is jack abbott. I used to wait to run my dishwasher

Devon: The thought to change my name really hit me the other night when we were all together here after neil’s tribute.

Ashley: It’s a wonderful way to honor a wonderful, wonderful man.

Devon: Thank you. Thank you. I think both of you had already gone home before I told the family I was gonna do it.

Ashley: Oh, definitely, I would have remembered that.

Devon: Yeah. Well, it’s something that I’ve given a lot of thought to since and it means a lot to me, so.

Tucker: In that case, I couldn’t be happier for you, son. I think taking his name is a fitting tribute to him. Sure that, uh, wherever he is, he’s looking down prouder than ever.

Devon: I appreciate you saying that, thank you.

Ashley: Thank you.

Tucker: Thank you very much.

Ashley: Well.

[ Phone ringing ] It’s jack abbott.

Christine: I’m sure he’s out to sell you on the phyllis is alive theory that I shot down.

Chance: Yeah. I should probably hear him out though, right?

Christine: It’s up to you. Just stay focused on the facts.

Chance: Detective chancellor.

Jack: Chance, I assume that christine has filled you in on the latest development.

Chance: Yeah, that phyllis is alive. Summer told me as well, jack. And I really hope you’re not filling her head with false hope just to help diane. Because that would be extremely cruel and I think she’s been through enough. Don’t you think?

Jack: This isn’t false hope. This is as real as it gets. And I have the dna evidence to prove it. Look, if I can do all of this on my own, just think what an actual first-rate detective could accomplish.

Sharon: Look at this, aria. This is a very expensive bottle of champagne. Now, this is the good stuff. You won’t be able to appreciate it for many, many years, but I wonder who sent this. It’s a very expensive vintage. I need to know who’s being so generous and kind so I can at least thank them.

Michael: Did you get any sleep last night?

Lauren: Ugh. Barely. I’m just still reeling by what you’ve said to me. Phyllis is still alive? How is that even possible? I mean, do you believe it?

Michael: Daniel was very convincing.

Lauren: You said that he knew something that only phyllis or the police would know?

Michael: True.

Lauren: What was it? Can you tell me?

Michael: He knew that stark had been murdered with a pair of scissors. That isn’t public knowledge.

Lauren: God.

Michael: And daniel has no reason to lie to me. None that I know of.

Lauren: So, who else knows besides jack and kyle?

Michael: And you. I’m hoping that’s it. Jack and kyle need to keep this from diane and and summer, for now. I need to search for more evidence. And I wanted to be able to talk this out with you since I knew you are discreet. And since this whole scenario is frankly insane.

Lauren: Or it’s more treacherous than you’re even thinking about. Because for phyllis to go to these lengths, she could not have done it willingly, could she?

Kyle: Hey, you’re dressed for work?

Summer: Yeah, I figured I had to get back to normal at some point, right?

Kyle: Guess so.

Summer: Thank you for giving me space again last night. My head was exploding from what you told me. And I– I just needed some time to think.

Kyle: I understand. I hope it was just for the one night though ’cause I want to be here for you summer.

Summer: I know.

Kyle: I know you got hit with some shocking news. All I ask is that you talk to me and tell me how you feel about it because if we’re gonna get through this together, you can’t keep shutting me out. I feel like I don’t even know you right now and I don’t know what to do about it.

Victoria: Yes, I am because of all of the good news you’ve brought me. Nikki: Hm. Why do I get the feeling it has nothing to do with work and everything to do with nate?

[ Nate sighing ]

Nate: Audra, let’s get one thing straight.

Ashley: There’s no explaining stupidity, diane. You’re going back to jail, so don’t think that we’re gonna be having any family time together, okay?

Diane: It won’t ever come to that.

Ashley: Well, you’re delusional as usual.

Diane: We’ll see.

Ashley: What are you talking about? There’s so much evidence against you.

Diane: Then I guess we have to agree to disagree.

Ashley: Why are you so certain?

Diane: Oh, do I seem confident that I’m not going to prison?

Ashley: You do? So, what are you up to?

Diane: I’m not up to anything. I have innocence on my side along with michael, kyle, and jack.

Summer: Kyle, I love you so much. It’s never been my intention to shut you out. It’s just– I don’t know. My mind has been so jumbled. So, if you could just give me a little bit more time.

Kyle: This is hard for me too, summer. Watching you and my mom suffer, feeling powerless to help. I mean, until today I thought you were punishing me for what my mom did, but now we know it was all a set up, so she didn’t actually do anything to phyllis.

Summer: Sorry, do we actually know that? Look I know that my mom is supposedly alive, but there hasn’t been some joyful, miraculous reunion. I don’t– I don’t get to see her or touch her or talk to her. Look, if this is true, then things are gonna get better, right? They have to, but it’s not gonna happen overnight, and right now, I’m sorry, I have to go.

Kyle: Well, let me grab my stuff, we can drive in together.

Summer: No, I have to do something before I go to work. Um, I’ll meet you there.

Victoria: I am well aware of your thoughts on nate. So, why don’t we just fast forward through that? Oh, I have an idea, new topic. How about how dad’s just handed adam an entire kingdom?

Nikki: [ Sighing ] Why do you even care about that?

Victoria: Because it’s going to end in a disaster.

Nikki: Well, so what if it does? It’s no skin off your nose?

Victoria: Mm, I see. So, now you’re rooting for adam.

Nikki: Not at all, but this is important to your father, so why don’t you just let him have it without all the bitter comments?

Victoria: Mccall unlimited would have dovetailed nicely into all of our divisions. I– I just gave up on it too easily. Just let it fall right into adam’s clutches.

Nikki: Oh, my god. You sound more like your father every day. Like it’s not enough to want the world, but you want to conquer everything. And your opponent must lose, as if their losing makes your victory even sweeter.

Victoria: Are we still talking about mccall unlimited? Because if this is about nate, I think maybe I should be offended.

Audra: It was elena’s idea to fly out and confront you. I didn’t send her to los angeles.

Nate: But you made damn sure she knew I wasn’t out there alone. That I was with victoria, even though it was a business trip.

Audra: How was I supposed to know you kept that detail from her? And why did you? Once elena made the decision, who was I to talk her out of it? She was hell bent on finding you.

Nate: Stop trying to justify your actions, audra. You lit the match knowing it would upset her.

Audra: Elena was already suspicious. You’d fallen out of love with her. Oh, don’t deny it. I could read the signs and so could elena. Look, as devastating as this breakup is for her, isn’t it really what’s best for everyone?

Nate: It shouldn’t have gone down like that. She didn’t deserve to be treated this way.

Audra: I suggest you let it go, let her go. Like trust me, elena is gonna be fine without you. You two just weren’t a– a match, that’s all. And even if this thing didn’t happen with victoria, you know, I doubt your girlfriend would have been able to get behind your new vision for the future.

Nate: Which is what exactly?

Audra: You don’t think I figured it out? I know what you’re up to. Newman media isn’t enough, you want his and her thrones running the kingdom alongside victoria.

Audra: You’ve done an impressive job so far, making the transition from medicine to business. Still, you know, who would have thought you’d rise this far this fast? And yet, you have. And now, you’re completely in with victoria, personally, as well as professionally, while making it seem like it was the boss lady driving it all along. Hm. Well done, you.

Nate: Are you finished?

Audra: Uh, is there more to the story?

Nate: From my vantage point, yes. You seem to have some facts wrong.

Audra: Enlighten me.

Nate: The way things evolved with victoria was not calculated. We had a connection that just exploded. It took us both by surprise, but it’s strong, audra, and it’s real.

Audra: That sounds lovely.

Nate: Last night, I told her she was the most amazing woman I have ever met and that is the truth.

Audra: Uh, I believe you. Yeah, I’ve seen it, felt it in the room when you were both there. I won’t lie, um, I was a little disappointed at first because I felt an attraction to you from the beginning.

Nate: What? Is that the reason you pushed elena to go to L.A. To come after victoria and me? Did you think if you blew up our relationship, it’d somehow clear a path for you? Nikki: Well, your conscience must be bothering you because I wasn’t thinking of nate at all.

Victoria: Some people say I don’t have a conscience.

Nikki: Well, I know that that’s not true, even though that is the image you like to project. In reality, you are much more considerate than you want people to realize.

Victoria: Just have take your word for that, mom.

Nikki: Okay, I know you don’t want to hear this, but I’m going to say it anyway.

Victoria: I’m sure you are. Go ahead.

Nikki: Have you given any thought at all to elena?

Victoria: You know, I have to get to the office. There’s some things that I need to take care of, but please stay. No rush. Finish your coffee.

Nikki: Victoria–

Victoria no, I insist, mom.

Nikki: Oh, honey, come on.

[ Nikki sighing ]

Lauren: I just keep going back and forth and back and forth with how I feel about all this.

Michael: Which part?

Lauren: Everything. I mean, I’m so thrilled that my best friend could possibly be alive, but how could she do this to us? Why would she do this to us? The way we’ve been grieving, I– I mean, phyllis would never.

Michael: Mm… I wouldn’t be too sure about that. You saw how she was spinning out. She was mad at the world and fighting with everybody and where diane was concerned, please.

Lauren: She was unhinged. And I’m no fan of diane’s, but phyllis could have taken it down a notch or two.

Michael: Ergo, perhaps it’s plausible that phyllis went all out to turn the tables, subject diane to the exact same type of hell she went through.

> Lauren: The perfect revenge.

Michael: It is brilliant, if horrible.

Lauren: I really hope that phyllis is still alive… but to knowingly break our hearts? I mean, how do we come back from this? How does she?

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: Hey. Thank you for meeting me here. I– I had to see you.

Chance: Yeah, it sounded urgent. What’s going on?

Summer: First of all, I– I know that this sounds crazy. I– I don’t even know what to think about it, but I’m just, I’m wondering if you’ve heard the same rumor that I have? Do I need to be more specific?

Chance: No, christine told me. Daniel saw phyllis alive.

Summer: I mean…

Chance: Look summer, given that this came from jack, someone who has a vested interest and someone who I no longer trust, my initial reaction was that this was just some ploy to get diane off the hook, which pisses me off on your behalf.

Summer: Why for me?

Chance: It’s cruel to give you false hope like that.

Summer: So, you don’t think it’s true?

Chance: You want to know what I think? I think diane didn’t mean to kill your mom. I think something went sideways. A– a mistake was made and here we are. I also think there’s more to this story than what I know and I think it involves jeremy stark somehow.

Summer: It’s definitely complicated.

Chance: Right. But look, this notion about your mother faking her death and trying to frame diane, I think it’s a stretch. I think it’s a scheme cooked up by michael baldwin and your father-in-law and it’s gonna backfire on him. Also, christine is not having any of this and her instincts are usually right.

Summer: I– I can’t even wrap my head around it and trust me, I’m not immediately accepting it as fact. I mean, we were all here. We saw my mom unconscious on the floor, the ambulance crash, the fire, all of that was very real, but I just can’t help but wonder… if it is true and my mom came back, I mean, what would happen to her going forward?

Audra: I won’t deny, I– I would have liked to see where things might have gone with us, but I’m not gonna try to compete with the pull between you and victoria. That could get messy and it’s okay. You know, you can’t always get what you want in this life. At least not all of it.

Nate: I suppose not.

Audra: My ultimate goal is for you to see me as an ally, not an enemy. I want you to have everything your heart desires and I’ll help however I can.

Nate: And you want something in return? I know you’re not being altruistic here. So, we’re helping each other, right? We have to trust each other to get exactly what we want and I know exactly what you want.

Audra: Oh. Success is about give and take. As you move up the ladder and get closer to victoria, there’s gonna be an empty spot at the top of the organization chart at newman media.

Nate: And you’d like to fill it.

Chance: So you want to know what kind of trouble your mom would be in if she was alive?

Summer: Legally, yeah.

Chance: Well, I mean, anything I say would be speculation. You know, I don’t want to mess with your emotions that way.

Summer: I appreciate that chance, but I can handle it. Really, I can. What kind of charges would she be facing? Is there any way that she could come back and not serve time in prison?

Chance: It depends on what evidence she presents.

Summer: Is there anything that you could do to protect her? I mean, if she is out there agonizing over what to do next. She could be on the run or in hiding. She would be afraid to come back, afraid of what would happen to her. And I just, I hate to think about her like that.

Chance: Summer, I understand your urge to play out every possible outcome, I do, but I wish you wouldn’T. I mean, don’t do that to yourself.

Ashley: I don’t care if jack and kyle and the president of the united states are on your side, a jury’s gonna see right through you.

Diane: No jury, no courtroom, no judge.

Ashley: Oh, there will be a trial.

Diane: Mm, don’t think so.

Ashley: What are you basing this on? Your hallucinations?

Diane: No, I’m basing it on… oh, good morning, tucker.

Tucker: Good morning.

Ashley: Thank god, you’re up. Hey, I got an idea, let’s go somewhere.

Tucker: Yeah, it’s a nice day, you want to take a walk?

Ashley: I’d love to.

Tucker: Would you care to join us, diane? Oh, that’s right, your little ankle accessory there. That’s a shame.

Diane: Ah, ha ha ha ha ha. Hey, are you a stand-up comedian now? I mean, don’t tell me that you sold off your life’s work to victor newman just for that new career.

Tucker: What’s with her?

Ashley: I don’t know. She’s very optimistic about her circumstances. Practically dancing on poor phyllis’s grave.

Diane: Poor phyllis. Oh, you have no idea what…

Tucker: No, please finish your thought. I’m fascinated.

Ashley: Yeah. I’m fascinated too.

Diane: Oh, never mind, I’ll keep it to myself. And in the meantime, I’ll look forward to watching you eat some delicious humble pie. Enjoy your walk.

Daniel: Summer.

Summer: Now, I know why you didn’t return any of my phone calls. You were too busy stabbing mom in the back.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: I should have known kyle couldn’t keep his mouth shut.

Summer: Thankfully, he has a little bit more respect for me than you do.

Daniel: I respect you too, summer, and I didn’t stab anyone in the back. I took the necessary steps to end this and to protect us all. You’ll notice I found a way to out mom without letting anyone know that you lied. I kept your name out of it, so you’re welcome.

Summer: Daniel, do you have any idea how I’ve had to scramble to make sure that my story matched yours? I told you that we needed to wait until we had a plan that wouldn’t ruin our mom’s life. What did you do? You went straight to jack, the last person that should have known any of this. What the hell were you thinking?

Daniel: That I don’t take orders from you. I get that you’re upset about mom and I know this is making you a wreck because I’m a wreck too, but secrecy isn’t the way to handle this. We need to find her, we need to sort this out and we need to get her legal help or our mother is screwed.

Victoria: Oh, hey.

Nate: Hey, I hope you don’t mind me waiting in here.

Victoria: No, not at all. How are you doing? I know that, um, you’re feeling conflicted about certain things. Is there anything I can do to help?

Nate: You’ve asked me where I’d like things to go between us.

Victoria: Yes, that’s right. Have you had any thoughts about it? (Vo) no matter what type of severe asthma you have…

Victoria: I really wasn’t expecting that.

Nate: I don’t want to be so forward here in your office, but I felt that was necessary.

Victoria: Necessary, how so?

Nate: Last time we saw each other, I kind of hit the brakes, but I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since then.

Victoria: About?

Nate: You. Us.

Victoria: Any conclusions?

Nate: I broke elena’s heart and I wish I hadn’T. She’s a wonderful woman who didn’t deserve that. But what you and I have, it can’t be denied. It isn’t going anywhere. I’m trying to ignore it. It’s– it’s just impossible.

Victoria: It’s not even remotely possible.

[ Knock on door ]

Nick: Vic, it’s me.

Michael: I understand you want answers, but first, we have to find phyllis and then bring her home. And given what she’s done and what she’d be facing if she turned herself in, I’m guessing she doesn’t want to be found. Easier just to stay dead.

Lauren: But she hasn’T. If daniel has seen her, she has blown her cover.

Michael: And what if there’s never another sighting or any hard evidence that she’s still amongst the living?

Lauren: Well, then daniel looks unstable and becomes the man who sees his dead mother, which my gosh. As if he hasn’t suffered enough.

Michael: No, no, no, it’s also possible that phyllis is laying low, keeping her options open, trying to think her way out of this. That’s what I’d do.

Lauren: You would never be in this mess.

Michael: Oh, there was a time.

Lauren: That was a long time ago. And you, unlike our dear un-departed friend, you’ve learned from your mistakes.

Michael: Still a work in progress, but I appreciate your faith in me.

Lauren: You know, phyllis has really pulled a lot of outrageous stunts in her life, but this? If and when she ever resurfaces, people are gonna want her head on a platter.

Michael: They’ll get past this. And so will you… eventually.

Lauren: Of course, I will. I want her home. I want her safe and I want her sound. Okay, um, what’s your next move?

Michael: I am mulling over a few options.

Lauren: Well, it better be ingenious because it’s gonna be very hard to find someone as cagey as phyllis.

Victoria: Hi.

Nick: Hi. Is this a bad time?

Victoria: No, come in.

Nate: Thanks for those figures. I will touch base later. Nick.

Nick: Nate. I mean, come on. What is it? Is this office like an aphrodisiac?

Victoria: Come on. The last thing that I need is another lecture from you.

Nick: You just can’t see it, can you?

Victoria: See what?

Nick: He’s playing you, vic. He has taken advantage of your interest in him.

Nick: He uses people and then has no scruples. He’s hurt elena and lily, his entire family. I can smell his ambition from a mile away.

Victoria: I happen to like that he’s ambitious.

Nick: I don’T. It concerns me.

Victoria: Yeah, of course, it concerns you. To you, ambition is like a dirty word. However, for me and nate, it’s– it’s– it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s good, we want more. We want to be the best. You know, newman enterprises is lucky to have people who think that way working for us.

Nick: What are you implying? That I don’t pull my weight around here just because I’m not power-hungry.

Summer: You betrayed me, daniel. What’s worse is that you betrayed our mom.

Daniel: I did no such thing.

Summer: You decided that you knew best and you went to jack and it’s exactly what mom predicted. You didn’t handle anything. You just made it infinitely more complicated. Now, chance and christine know, michael, kyle. Even diane knows.

Daniel: Well, that’s great because I asked jack to keep that to himself.

Summer: Oh, and did you really think that he would listen to you? Why would he? And do you think that mom would even consider coming back with the whole town turning their back on her? Not to mention the position that you’ve put me in having to act all stunned about all this.

Daniel: Whoa, whoa, I protected you. I covered up the fact that you had knowledge that could save kyle’s mom and you hid it.

Summer: I really hope that you don’t expect any gratitude from me because what you did was wrong and it was completely unfair.

Tucker: What was that comment diane made about you eating humble pie?

Ashley: Who knows what goes on in that sick brain of hers? You know, I don’t even care anymore. She thinks she knows something that we don’t and it makes her feel very special and the more I think about it, then I’m just playing into her hand, so let’s not talk about her, please.

Tucker: Deal.

Ashley: Thank you.

Tucker: You want to get a bite after this?

Ashley: Uh, I really kind of have to go to work.

Tucker: No, no, no, no, you really have to do nothing. You have to savor this moment with me because I have an important plan later and we might not get to see each other ’til this evening.

Ashley: Wait, what? You have a plan.

Tucker: Yes, I’m hoping to get permission to watch dom and his music group.

Ashley: That’s your plan?

Tucker: Yes. That’s my one and only calendar item for the day. Got all this free time now, it’s wild.

Ashley: Yeah, sounds pretty wild.

[ Tucker sighing ]

Tucker: I spent so many years working. Working on my company seven days a week.

Ashley: Yeah.

Tucker: Sitting on a mountain top, racing cars. It’s too much work. If I want to know my grandson, it’s got to be now. It’s now or never. Same with devon. Same with you. Proving to you that I’m the man of your dreams, right?

Ashley: Uh-oh, that’s a lot of work.

Tucker: Ah. Yeah. Now, it must be.

Victoria: Your work is fine. I’m not implying anything. You know, it’s not always about you, okay?

Nick: I’m here every damn day working behind the scenes, making sure this company is moving in the right direction. Yeah, it’s not glamorous but I don’t care. I don’t need my name in the press every other day and I’m certainly not the one using the corporate jet to fly out to los angeles for trysts with the employees.

Victoria: That was a legitimate business trip.

Nick: Yeah? Uh, what sort of business was it that elena caught you and nate doing?

Victoria: You know what, are you finished? Because I’m really sick and tired of your self-righteous garbage. Neither one of us is a saint, okay? And this doesn’t involve you, at all.

Nick: I saw elena last night. She’s heartbroken. She’s already packed up and moved out. It’s wrong, vic. What you are doing is wrong on so many levels.

Victoria: Look, I already feel bad enough without you piling on, all right. Yes, I know maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea to pursue someone who wasn’t single, but when I’m around nate, he makes me feel respected and admired. Those things that I no longer felt when I found out that ashland was using me.

Summer: Sorry, I guess finding out about all of this has kind of done a number on me.

Kyle: I hope you’re not blaming daniel for it because if anything was unfair, it was phyllis’s decision not to reach out to both of you.

Daniel: I’m sure she had her reasons.

Kyle: Right. And I’m sure we all know what those reasons were. Your mom didn’t reach out to you because of who you’re married to and who my mother is. So, if you need to blame anyone, blame me, but please do not jump all over daniel because none of this is his fault. What– I… did I miss something? What was that?

Michael: So, my hunch was correct. A little schmoozing goes a long way, nicely done. So after that? Oh, you spoke with the contact I gave you back east. No kidding. Who– which means? No, no, no, you got it. Excellent work, alan. Yeah, I’ll be in touch.

[ Michael humming ]

Lauren: What was that about?

Tucker: No, but I’ve studied that video with my professional ear, and if you single out dom’s percussion from the two-year-old hacks, you can tell he’s got something special.

Ashley: So, anyway, I was thinking that maybe when I go back to work and then maybe if you’re done listening to small children banging on objects, if you go back to the house, maybe you just kind of want to slide your things into my room, maybe. What do you think?

Tucker: Move into your room?

Ashley: Yeah.

Tucker: I don’t know, I kind of like my room.

Ashley: Mm.

Tucker: I’ll think about it.

Ashley: Okay, you do that.

Nick: You were married to a pathological liar. So, I’m sure nate seems like a, uh, a better choice right now, but he is capable of deception, vic, just like billy was and jt and–

Victoria: Just stop.

Nick: There’s a pattern, vic. Look, I’m your brother and I love you. I need you to see what I see.

Victoria: I’m not gonna discuss this with you or mom. It’s simply no one else’s business.

Nick: Fine. But I will never apologize for worrying about you.

Victoria: Look, my eyes are wide open, I promise. And even if nate did have an agenda, it doesn’t matter because I’m never gonna do anything that I don’t want to do. You just need to trust me on that. And if you can’t trust me, then just keep your thoughts to yourself, all right. I am your sister. I love you. I don’t want to constantly be at odds with you.

Summer: I wasn’t attacking daniel. We’re just upset about our mom. There’s a lot of guilt there.

Kyle: You sure that’s all it was?

Summer: Yeah. Um, can we just go to work? I can’t think about this anymore.

Kyle: I’ll walk you out. Later.

Daniel: Bye.

Kyle: Hey, why didn’t you tell me about you meeting with daniel? I assumed you’d want me here when you talk to him.

Summer: Because it’s between me and daniel.

Kyle: Okay. This is what I mean about shutting me out.

Summer: Kyle.

Kyle: You have a husband who will do whatever he can to help you. Why do you do these things like you’re on your own? Like we’re not together?

Summer: You know, I– I– I’ve got to go. I– I have an errand to run before I go to the office. So just go without me and I’ll– I’ll meet you there later.

Michael: Evidently, stark had initiated the process to collect on phyllis’s life insurance, but he never finished the paperwork. So, clearly he died before he could cash out.

Lauren: But what does that have anything to do with locating phyllis?

Michael: There’s more to it. The P.I. Was able to get the contact information that stark had sent to the insurance company. It’s a local post office box.

Lauren: Well, that doesn’t do you any good.

Michael: No, no, no, never underestimate your husband’s brilliance. After we hit that wall, I pulled a few strings with a friend in D.C. He was able to get the registration of the box. Now, I assumed that would be the grand phoenix, stark’s last abode. Au contraire. It turns out it’s a low-rent motel on the outskirts of genoa city.

Lauren: A perfect place for a supposedly dead woman to disappear for a while. You are brilliant.

Michael: I think jack will love to hear where phyllis might be hiding.

Billy: Unfortunately, you can’t will those things to ring. How you doing?

Summer: Trying to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Billy: I’m just checking in.

Summer: You know what, billy, I really don’t need you to check in on me or offer your condolences or tell me what a great gal you thought my mom was, because we both know how you felt about her after your relationship ended. So, it’s a little late to be warm and fuzzy.

Chelsea: Daniel.

Daniel: Hey, chelsea.

Chelsea: You look like you could use a friend. Or a good cup of coffee. What’s going on?

Daniel: Oh, you know, just waiting for some bombs to explode.

Jack: Victor, always a joy.

Victor: Indeed. Indeed. Yeah.

Jack: I’m sure you have an important business meeting. Don’t let me keep you.

Victor: Well, now, I have a feeling you’re waiting for someone as well. It’s making you kind of nervous, isn’t it?

Jack: It’s nothing for you to worry about.

Victor: Certainly it couldn’t be about adam. He is back in the newman fold, running mccall. That’s your loss and my gain, you know.

Victor: Yeah. Good. Jack… something is bothering you. What’s going on?

Jack: You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.

Diane: You look so serious. Is everything all right?

Kyle: Um… you might wanna sit down.

Diane: No, I’ll– I’ll stand. Is this about my case? Please, kyle, just… just tell me, how bad is it?

Billy: Look, summer, whatever issues that we have between us, I think it’s important that you know that I really respected phyllis. She was one of a kind, pure energy. That power wasn’t always used for good, but with that heart of hers, she loved the hell outta you and your brother.

Summer: I know that my mom loves me– loved me. But that love could be… overwhelming. I mean, she– she gave so much, but she demanded a lot in return.

Billy: Yeah. She was all or nothing. She lived life out loud and she expected everyone else to do the same, which didn’t exactly make it easy for the ones that cared for her. Look, summer, I hope I’m not overstepping by saying this. I know how much you loved her. But you two had your fair share of ups and downs.

Summer: She was so impulsive and reckless. She would act without thinking, you know? She would get something in her head and there was no talking her out of it. And she’d end up hurting people she loved and hurting herself even more in the process. All because she had decided that it was her against the world, even when it wasn’T.

Billy: That pretty much sums her up.

Summer: [ Scoffs ] That’s the thing. It didn’t have to be like that. She was never alone, not really. I was always on her side. Always. I just– I don’t know why she couldn’t see that.

Diane: I’m– I’m all for good news, but you don’t look like it’s good.

Kyle: Um, mom, there– there is a real possibility that the murder charges against you can go away.

Diane: What? How? Have– have the police found evidence or proof that I’m innocent?

Kyle: No. No. Not– not exactly.

Diane: Well, then how has anything changed? Kyle? Kyle, you’re not going to do anything illegal to protect me, are you? Because I will not have you putting yourself at risk for me.

Kyle: Look, the only person who has done anything illegal is phyllis.

Jack: Victor, I– I know we’re on better terms these days, but trust only goes so far.

Victor: Uh-huh. Now, jack, you and I have known each other for a long time. Okay? Something is going on. What’s bothering you?

Jack: Let it go, please?

Victor: Maybe you’re waiting for your fiancée to join you. However, she is wearing a beautiful ankle bracelet, courtesy of the authority.

Jack: Not for long.

Victor: Oh, yeah? What are they doing now? Issuing get-out-of-jail-free cards to murderers?

Jack: Diane did not kill phyllis.

Victor: If she didn’t, she belongs behind bars. She’s a bad woman and you know it.

Jack: If anyone belongs behind bars it–

Victor: What are you gonna say? Who belongs behind bars? Who?

Jack: Christine.

Christine: Gentlemen. Is there a problem?

Victor: Oh, my goodness. Christine, how do you do?

Christine: Hi.

Victor: All right. Well, you two have a nice dinner. Thank you.

Jack: Thank you so much for coming.

Christine: Jack, I really shouldn’t be here. I mean, meeting you before diane’s trial is completely inappropriate. I’m only doing it as a courtesy to a friend.

Jack: If– if you will just keep an open mind and listen to me for a few minutes, there will be no need for a trial.

Christine: Is that why you called me here? To lobby me to drop the case? Wait, this is–

Jack: No, no, no. Christine, don’t go. You need to hear this. This is something you wanna know.

Christine: What could possibly be so earthshattering that it would change the course of the case against diane?

Jack: Phyllis is alive.

[ Scoffs disbelievingly ]

Diane: Phyllis did something illegal? I don’t understand. She’s dead. How could whatever she did, legal or otherwise, affect my case or the charges against me? Is this connected to jeremy? Did they find proof that he killed her?

Kyle: No one killed phyllis, mom. It was all stageD. She’s alive. She set up the entire thing to frame you.

[ Gasps ] So I didn’t think I needed swiffer.

Daniel: What do you do when you wanna help someone, but trying to protect them just might make matters even worse?

Chelsea: Oh, I can relate. You just wanna help ’em, but you’re not sure what the right course is.

Daniel: What’s going on with you?

Chelsea: Connor. He’s been handed a curve ball lately and getting through to him has been difficult. You know, I just try to get him to open up, but he just shuts me down.

Daniel: Well, I’ve been there.

Chelsea: Any advice?

Daniel: You know, I don’t think that I’m the right person to ask.

Chelsea: I swear, the only thing harder than being a parent is being a kid. All the stuff the world throws at them. Um, which is why, actually recently, I came up with an idea.

Daniel: Really?

Chelsea: This is something I’ve been working on. An omega sphere world for kids. I mean, they’re the ultimate gamers anyway, right? Why not create a space that they already feel comfortable in? Help them feel safe feeling their feelings, whether they’re sad or happy or confused. You know, a parent-free zone. No judgments. No timeouts.

Daniel: Well… I think I could’ve used something like this when I was a kid. You know, since we’re here, since we’re caffeinated, clearly, um, why don’t we dive into where we’re at with the current game, and I’ll give you some updates?

Chelsea: Are you sure? I– I mean, I– are you in the right mindset? You’ve been going through a lot lately. If you wanna do it a different day, we can.

Daniel: No. This is exactly what I need right now. Distractions are the only things that are keeping me sane these days.

Billy: Look, I’m no expert on grief, but I know that when you lose someone that you love, “why,” that can send you into the weeds. “Why,” I don’t think it’s the best question. I think maybe “what.” As in, what would your mom want you to do? I know you and daniel, you were everything to her. Her heart and soul. She lived for you. She would die for you. And she would want you to find happiness again.

Summer: I don’t really think that that’s possible.

Billy: Oh, see, right there? No, that’s– that’s not a phyllis attitude. She was a fighter. She didn’t back down. When the going got rough, she doubled down.

Summer: Yeah. It could be exhausting.

Billy: [ Laughs ] Yeah. Unless she was in your corner. Then you knew you had someone to believe in you. Because she would go to the wall to protect you. I see a lot of phyllis in you. The good parts. Summer, you are smart and you are strong. You know what you want and you go after it and you don’t give a crap about what anyone else thinks. And for the people that are lucky enough to be loved by you, well, they know that you’re gonna do everything in your power to protect them. Over time, this will get a little bit easier. And look, you’re gonna miss her. But that part of her, that– that good part, it’ll stay alive for you, I promise. And here I am yammering on, and all you wanted was a little peace and quiet.

[ Summer laughs softly ] You take care. Okay?

Summer: Billy?

Billy: Yeah.

Summer: I’m sorry.

Billy: Sorry for what?

Summer: For being rude earlier about you and my mom.

Billy: [ Sighs ] Can I ask you one more question?

Summer: Could I stop you?

Billy: I think I know the answer to this. But why are you sitting here alone when you got a whole house full of people that love you and all they wanna do is help you? Now, look, I’m pretty sure you’re gonna say because you believe that you can handle this on your own. I hate to say this, but you can’T.

Summer: You don’t–

Billy: No, you can push me away. That’s fine. Okay? But don’t push all those people that love you and care about you. Don’t– don’t push them away. Like your friends and your family. Especially not kyle. He is crazy in love with you.

Summer: I don’t think that kyle or anyone knows what’s going through my head right now.

Kyle: Phyllis and stark staged her poisoning.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] But the ambulance crash, the– the explosion?

Jack: All orchestrated by phyllis and stark to fake her death.

Christine: But why?

Kyle: Phyllis wanted revenge on you so badly she was willing to go to any extreme to get what she wanted.

[ Gasps ]

Jack: But phyllis has come to regret her decision. She has secretly reached out to daniel.

Kyle: She’s scared and on the run.

Diane: But she’s alive.

Kyle: I know it’s hard to believe.

Jack: But it’s all true.

Christine: [ Sighs ] Well, that’s quite a story, jack, but that’s all it is. Fiction.

Jack: It is the truth, christine.

Christine: It’s desperation.

Jack: Tell me something. Why would daniel, of all people, invent something to help diane’s case?

Diane: Phyllis faked her death to frame me.

[ Scoffs ] I always knew that she was psychotic and vindictive, but this… this is pure evil. What’s the #1 retinol brand

Daniel: We are almost ready to test the prototype.

Chelsea: That’s so exciting. What does that mean? Sorry, I’m a newbie, remember?

Daniel: It’s essentially our first major milestone. We’ll run a test version, then we’ll take a look at functionality, user experience, gameplay, um, the art style. We figure out what works, what doesn’t work, and then we build from there.

Chelsea: Cool. But we can still tinker around with it?

Daniel: Absolutely.

Chelsea: Great. ‘Cause the deeper I dive into all this stuff, the more research I do, the more possibilities I see. Did you know some of these games can qualify to be fda-approved as therapy?

Daniel: I do know that. Isn’t that something?

Chelsea: Yeah, it really is. I– I just want this to be the best game, best tool. Resource. So, I’ve been meeting with experts to try to fine-tune everything we’ve been working on.

Daniel: Hmm. Well, you keep fine-tuning, because that prototype’s gonna be out before you know it.

Chelsea: Well, I can’t wait. And listen, thank you for taking the time to noodle around with all this.

Daniel: You have no idea how much I needed this.

Chelsea: I know you’ve been through something agonizing, and it’s really hard to find your way back from that. But from where I’m standing, you’ve got a lot to be proud of.

Daniel: Thank you. Not sure everyone else would see it the same way, though.

Summer: Daniel, I need to know what you’re thinking. What we’re gonna do next. Has mom called you again? Oh, I hope that she has. Even if she doesn’t say anything, I think it means that she’s thinking about coming home. We have to help her, daniel. We have to find her, no matter what it takes. ‘Cause I’m not gonna let her disappear on us. I have some ideas about how to bring her home safely. So, please just– just call me

[ Sighs ]

Diane: Phyllis has nearly destroyed my life and– and the lives of the people who love her. How can she be so hateful? So selfish? You know what? I have half a mind to hunt her down and drag her back here by her hair.

Kyle: Which is why michael didn’t want us to tell you.

Diane: Oh. Oh, you mean my lawyer is trying to protect his best friend somehow?

Kyle: No, he’s trying to protect you. He was– this is what he was afraid of. That you would get so upset, you’d try to break house arrest.

Diane: And that’s what I should do. I should hunt that bitch down and bring her back here.

Kyle: Mom, I know you’re angry. I understand. But you need to calm down.

Diane: Calm down? What? And– and– and– and do nothing? Oh, my god. Where– where are the police in all this? Why haven’t they found her? And if phyllis is so remorseful and misses her kids so much, then why is she still in hiding?

Kyle: She’s probably facing legal consequences.

Diane: You mean like life in prison for murder, which was my future, thanks to her.

[ Huffs ] But not any longer. So, what’s the plan? What’s the plan? How soon are the charges against me dropped? When will I be free again?

Kyle: There is a process.

Diane: What process? Phyllis is alive.

Kyle: Yeah. Well, we don’t have proof. Just daniel’s word. But I swear to you, dad and i will do everything we can to get the evidence we need. He’s with christine right now trying to convince her to put the gcpd on it.

Diane: I can’t believe your father wanted to keep this from me. When I asked him what was going on, he outright lied to me.

Kyle: No, he only wanted to protect you. He didn’t want you to get your hopes up.

Diane: But this is happening, right? I mean, I’m going to be free again?

Kyle: It’s only a matter of time.

[ Sighs in relief ]

Diane: I’m going to be free. Thank you for telling me. No, thank you. [ Laughs ] Oh, my gosh. I can take harrison to the park again. I– I’m going to be able to go out to dinner. I can hold my head high. I mean, whatever process is ahead, I can get through it knowing that my freedom is on the other side. Does summer know?

Kyle: I wanted to tell her as much as I wanted to tell you, but daniel begged me not to.

Diane: Why? Can’t he see how much she’s suffering?

Kyle: He was afraid it would crush her knowing that phyllis put her through all of this. And that phyllis reached out to daniel, not summer, when she was ready to reveal herself.

Diane: You know, how heartless can phyllis be? I mean, she put getting revenge above the well-being of her children.

[ Sighs ] Not– not that I have anything that I can judge after what I put you through.

Kyle: We’re long past that, mom.

Diane: Tell summer. She needs to know that her mother’s alive.

Kyle: Even if it breaks her heart?

Diane: Sh– she has you. And the sooner she knows, the sooner she can heal and the sooner your relationship can heal. And kyle, it’s– it’s your choice. But the toll a secret this big can take… I don’t know if a marriage can survive that.

Christine: If phyllis is so remorseful and determined to be with her children, why is she god knows where and not home?

Jack: She is afraid of prosecution, fraud, falsifying evidence, obstruction of justice. Whatever you can throw at somebody who’s trying to fake their own death. And she’s got a da who’s not a fan of hers, who will make the charges stick.

Christine: I don’t suppose daniel has any evidence, a photograph, a recording?

Jack: No, but he’s willing to sign an affidavit.

Christine: Oh, which means nothing, jack. Come on, there’s more questions than answers. There’s no evidence. We’re taking the word of a grieving son.

Jack: Okay. There is one other charge phyllis could be afraid of.

Christine: And what might that be?

Jack: Murder.

Christine: Excuse me?

Jack: Phyllis killed jeremy stark.

Christine: Oh, you know, this is ridiculous.

Jack: You have another suspect? You have any leads that might lead you to who killed him? I’m giving you one. Phyllis. Is that enough to get your attention? Is that enough to get you to get the gcpd involved in this?

Christine: You know what? You’ve given me a crazy story that’s very light on facts. Okay? So, we’re done here.

Jack: I’ll give you one more fact. Phyllis killed jeremy stark with a pair of scissors. Head & shoulders is launching something huge.

Chelsea: Mm. Have you noticed how much of our relationship involves pastries? Cinnamon buns in particular?

Billy: Is that a bad thing?

Chelsea: Nope.

Billy: You know, when I walked in here, I saw you and daniel wrapped up in the world of omega sphere. If you wanna keep working, I can take this cinnamon bun somewhere else.

Chelsea: No way. You and this bun stay here.

Billy: All right.

Chelsea: Especially because we’re celebrating.

Billy: Is that right? What are we celebrating?

Chelsea: The prototype is almost ready.

Billy: That’s amazing.

Chelsea: Yeah. So, this game, it’s not just a hope or a– or a dream or a wish. It’s really happening.

Billy: That’s fantastic. Congratulations.

Chelsea: Thank you. And I’m actually bringing a new aspect to it that involves kids. So, it’s gonna be new lessons, new challenges that help them deal with real life.

Billy: Are we still talking about omega sphere or does this have more to do with connor now?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Billy, I am so worried about him. He’s become so withdrawn.

Billy: Yeah. He’s got a lot going on and he’s just trying to figure out all those feelings.

Chelsea: Yeah. Maybe it’s my fault.

Billy: Why would you say that?

Chelsea: My life. My… episode. Maybe he feels like he can’t lean on me, or else I’m gonna fall apart. Or maybe, I don’t know, maybe he’s stuffed down all of these feelings over the past few months that are finally coming to the surface. Or… maybe he’s angry at me for almost leaving him.

Billy: I think you’re being too hard on yourself. You’re being a concerned, attentive parent. You’re doing all the right things.

Chelsea: Am I? [ Laughs ] Adam and I are not shining examples of healthy behavior, let’s be honest. And it worries me what that could mean for our son.

Billy: I mean, I understand that. I look at johnny and katie sometimes and think their dad has got a very addictive personality. I don’t know if that’s locked in their genes or if that’s something that can be stopped.

Chelsea: [ Exhales ] Well, certainly not something we can solve tonight. But you know what we can do?

Billy: What’s that?

Chelsea: Pat ourselves on the back for making it through another day without screwing up royally.

Billy: I like the sound of that.

Chelsea: Do you?

Billy: Mm-hmm.

Chelsea: I’ll get it embroidered on a pillow. I’ll get one for you. I’ll get one for me.

Billy: [ Laughs ] Oh.

Jack: Now that I have your attention, perhaps you and I can discuss the best way to flush phyllis out of hiding and get her back to genoa city.

Christine: Jack, I won’t be goaded into action. Okay? There’s no evidence that phyllis is alive or that she killed stark. This whole story is just way too convenient. You’re too involved.

Jack: Everything– everything I have told you can be proven, if we find phyllis. One phone call from you and the police can make that happen.

Christine: Oh, so, you want an overburdened police department to spend resources trying to track down a woman who’s legally been declared dead?

Jack: Except she isn’T. And now diane is shackled with a bogus murder charge because the woman who framed her is alive and well. Christine, if you have any sense of justice in you, you– you have no choice but to get the police involved.

Christine: Do not question my sense of justice.

Jack: I don’t understand your hesitation in acting on this. You know phyllis.

Christine: Yeah.

Jack: You have your own history with her. Does it make you think that anything I’m saying is improbable?

Christine: Yes. Yes, it does. Because you know what? As hateful as she has been to me and as capable as she is of doing real harm, the one thing she would never do is abandon her kids. Not like this.

Jack: Well, she did.

Christine: Okay. You know this conversation’s over, right? You want me to believe you? You bring me some proof. Concrete proof.

[ Sighs ]

[ Door opens, closes ]

Kyle: Hey, glad you’re home. It was getting late.

Summer: I didn’t realize I had a curfew. Uh, did the nanny call you? She met me at the park and took harrison to a sleepover.

Kyle: She did. I’m sure he’s having a great time.

Summer: Yeah.

Kyle: How are you?

Summer: Why are you looking at me like that? What’s wrong?

Kyle: Nothing. It’s good news.

Summer: Really? We haven’t had a lot of that lately. I don’t suppose that tucker’s moving out?

Kyle: Uh, no. No, not exactly.

Summer: Okay. Well, whatever it is, go ahead and tell me, I’m really tired. I wanna go to bed.

Kyle: I– I– I don’t know how to say this, or where to begin, so I’m just gonna say it. It’s your mom.

Summer: My mom? What about her?

Kyle: She’s alive. Mr. Clean magic eraser powers

Billy: I just tried to remind summer that she’s got a lot of family and friends that really care about her, that wanna help her through this grief.

Chelsea: She and daniel are really struggling. Good for you for trying to make her feel better.

[ Billy laughs softly ] You’re a really good man. You know that? I just got shivers.

Billy: The good kind?

Chelsea: The good kind.

Billy: That’s interesting. Me, too.

Chelsea: You sure it wasn’t a sugar rush?

[ Both laugh ]

Billy: No. It was all you. You know, when I walked in here and saw you and daniel working away, I could see your excitement, your energy.

[ Chelsea laughs ] You light up the room. And you bring that same heart to everything you do. Being a mother, a friend, movie night.

[ Chelsea laughs ] I just appreciate this slow dance that we’re doing. Taking this one step at a time to make sure that we do it right, it’s important. You bring me happiness. You give me hope and excitement for the future. We accept each other. And we support each other and that’s a really good thing. How could I not love being with you?

[ Chelsea chuckles ] That smile makes me think anything is possible.

[ Chelsea inhales sharply ] Hey. You okay?

Chelsea: Yeah. It’s no– it’s nothing.

Billy: Chelsea, you can talk to me.

Christine: [ Exhales ] Hey, thanks for meeting me.

Chance: What’s going on?

Christine: [ Sighs ] I have some crazy news for you.

Summer: So, daniel said that, uh, she contacted him? When? How?

Kyle: She called him a few days ago and they– they met at the lookout at the park. He said he couldn’t believe it when he saw phyllis standing in front of him.

Summer: Yeah. Can’t imagine. What I don’t understand is why– why– why would he tell you and not me?

Kyle: He didn’t want you to be upset that she chose to reveal herself to him and not you. He didn’t want you to be hurt.

Summer: Isn’t lying to me hurting me?

Kyle: Look, daniel only wanted to wait until we had real proof or that we could track phyllis down. Babe, I’m– I’m sorry she didn’t reach out to you.

Summer: Yeah, I’m sure that she had her reasons.

Kyle: Well, with– with any luck, you’ll be able to see her soon.

Summer: So, you believe daniel?

Kyle: Why– why– why would he lie about something like this? I– he saw phyllis, he spoke to her. He knew that stark was killed with a pair of scissors. How else would he know that if he hadn’t talked to phyllis?

Summer: Who else knows about this?

Summer: [ Gasps ] They’re gonna go to the police! My mom’s gonna be arrested.

Kyle: No, daniel was adamant that we had to protect phyllis. That she was a victim in all of this. But my dad did take the information to christine.

Summer: What? Kyle, she hates my mom, she’s–

Kyle: No, no, we will do everything we can to protect phyllis. But there is one more thing. I told my mom. I thought she had a right to know. No. Hey, hey, hey, don’t shut down on me, summer. Don’t shut me out. Please. Tell me how you’re feeling.

Diane: There you are.

Jack: Has something happened?

Diane: Yes, it has. Kyle told me.

[ Jack sighs ] It should’ve been you, jack. Partial response:

Chelsea: I try to maintain this constant vigilance every day. I check in on myself. I do. I ask myself how I’m feeling. Am I okay? Am i not okay? And lately, I’ve– i’ve– I’ve been okay. But then it feels like every time i’m enjoying myself or if I’m actually happy, like when you look at me the way you’re looking at me right now, I ask myself if I deserve it.

[ Voice breaking ] I ask myself if it’s real. Um, or if I’m gonna screw it up.

[ Chuckles dryly ] And then I’m hit with this other thought. I almost wasn’t here for this. I almost wasn’t here for anything. For my son. And then I just get this rush of– of fear, billy, and I’m back on that roof and– and– and I’m alone and I’m scared. And I can feel the wind. And I can– I can feel how cold it was. And how easy it would be.

Billy: Chels. Hey, look at me. You are here.

Chelsea: I am.

Billy: You are here.

Chelsea: I am. I’m here because of you. And I’m– and I’m happy. I’m happy being here with you.

[ Exhaling deeply, sniffling ]

Billy: You okay? It’s a beautiful night. How about we go for a walk? Lit by the moon. Huh?

Chelsea: I’d like that.

Kyle: What are you thinking?

Summer: I don’t know what to think. I guess I’m scared to hope that my mom is really out there.

Kyle: Hey, you don’t have to be afraid, summer. Your mom is alive. Why would daniel tell me something that isn’t true?

Summer: Yeah. Why would he tell you? ‘Cause I’m not gonna let her disappear on us. I have some ideas about how to bring her home safely, so please just– just call me as soon as you get this.

[ Indistinct whispering ]

Chance: That’s one hell of a story.

Christine: Yeah. With zero actual evidence that phyllis is out there.

Chance: What do you make of it?

Christine: Wishful thinking. Deflection, a part of michael’s defense strategy. I don’t know.

Chance: [ Exhales ] Well, there is one real fact in all this: Stark was killed with scissors.

Christine: Obviously, there’s a leak in the department and michael took advantage of it.

Chance: Yeah.

Christine: Okay. Well, I’m just letting you know in case jack approaches you, which I have no doubt he will.

Chance: Well, I appreciate the heads-up. Desperate people do desperate things, huh?

Jack: I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I didn’t wanna give you hope without having the evidence we want to show the world that you are innocent.

Diane: I know you did it to protect me. Your intentions were in the right place.

Jack: Then I’m forgiven?

Diane: How can I be angry at a man I love so much?

Jack: I promise you, we are so close to ending this nightmare. Soon, soon you will be free and we will get married as we planned.

Diane: That’s all I want.

Jack: I am not going to give up until that happens. Phyllis put you in this mess. Come hell or high water, by god, she’s gonna get you out of it.

Adam: Hey [ Sighs ] I, uh, I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.

Sally: Uh, no. I just got here. I’m glad you could join me.

Adam: You kidding? You know, any chance to sit down with you and discuss, uh, possibilities at mccall, sign me up.

Sally: That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Your job offer.

Adam: Excellent. Uh, well, I have some wonderful ideas that I think you’re gonna love–

Sally: No, no– the answer is no.

Nick: Well, it’s great to put a face to the voice on the other end of the phone. Let’s talk real soon. Hi, elena.

Elena: Nick. Hey.

Nick: You, uh, having dinner?

Elena: Um, no. I am actually staying here these days.

Nick: Right.

Elena: Yeah. Turns out you were right about nate.

[ Knock on door ]

Victoria: Come in.

[ Door opens ]

[ Door closes ] Uh, I was gonna ask about your flight home from la… but it looks like it was a crash landing.

Jack: This is just beyond unbelievable.

Kyle: No, this is proof that mom is innocent. She and summer need to know. We need to get them here.

Michael: No one can know. End of story.

Kyle: My mother’s get-out-of-jail card is out there somewhere, alive. Why do we have to keep this under wraps?

Michael: Oh. You’re that guy.

Kyle: What guy?

Michael: You know that one guy who’s never kept a secret from his mother or his wife? Give me a break. And give that guy a medal. You’re a saint, kyle. Oh, but you’re also the one that we’ll point to when the judge asks, “who unleashed a fury of this magnitude?”

Kyle: Phyllis is alive. Summer needs to know so she can stop grieving her mother and treating mine like she’s a murderer.

Michael: That’s the warm and tender version. But in the real world, where we live, you’ll pay now and for the rest of your days.

Kyle: Michael, I don’t see how that may be.

Michael: Well, if diane finds out that phyllis tried to frame her for murder, she will gnaw off her ankle, hunt phyllis down, and there won’t be anything left to bury.

Kyle: Summer needs to know that daniel saw phyllis.

Daniel: No, she doesn’T.

Jack: I promised diane–

Michael: Gentlemen, gentlemen. Sometimes secrets are kept out of kindness, or to avoid false hopes or massive bloodshed. This is definitely the latter. So leave it alone until we can come up with solid evidence.

Daniel: Yeah. Total silence. We all need to be quiet until we can be sure that we can bring my mom back safely.

Michael: Diane!

Jack: Hey there.

Diane: Hello. I thought I heard voices.

Jack: I hope we didn’t disturb you.

Diane: Is there news about the case? Is there something I should know? We live our lives on our home’s fabrics.

Adam: You can’t tell me that you don’t want that again.

Sally: I want different things now. And I have made my decision. There isn’t a newman alive who will ever sign my paychecks again.

Elena: So, how long have you known about nate and victoria?

Nick: For reasons I hope you understand, I cannot talk about that or answer any questions on the topic.

Elena: Fair. I am in a kill-the-messenger kinda mood.

Nick: I will say, we can start with “nate is a complete jackass.”

Elena: True.

Nick: And you deserve so much more than him. I mean, you’re out there fighting for the two of you to stay together, and he’s doing what he’s doing.

Elena: You are good at this.

Nick: You wanna know what helps everything? Ice cream. What do you say we crush some mint chocolate chip or cookie dough? Whatever you want.

Elena: You’ve got yourself a deal.

Nick: All right.

Diane: Michael, I didn’t realize you were coming by.

Michael: How are you, diane?

Diane: So… who’s going to be the one to tell me what this is all about?

Jack: We were just brainstorming.

Diane: Oh! Well, I doubt that daniel is interested in helping plan my defense strategy. Hello, daniel.

Daniel: Diane.

Diane: I– I want you to know that my heart breaks for you every day. Uh, to lose a parent like that under such, um, tragic and complicated circumstances…

Daniel: Thank you.

Diane: I am just destroyed by what happened. And, um, I just hope that you can leave yourself open to believing that I’m innocent. And I– I know that the evidence that’s out there says otherwise, and that I’ve already been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion, but maybe one day you’ll see that I–

Daniel: You’re not going to prison, diane.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, that’s very kind of you to say, but… why do you sound strangely certain?

Michael: Uh, what daniel probably means is with the help of a highly skilled attorney such as myself–

Diane: Hang on, michael. Daniel, is that right? Is that why you’re saying I’m not going to prison?

Jack: Uh, you know what? I will tell you why. Hi, I’m michael,

Nick: Well, the first thing we’re gonna do is stuff the suggestion box and demand they get a way better options of ice cream.

Elena: Right? I mean, this is a hotel. It’s gotta be overflowing with heartbreak and cheaters. They are missing out on a revenue stream.

Nick: So tonight, we drink. Unless, of course, you have to work later.

Elena: No. I got my shift covered for a favor I did for a friend. Which, you know, is really reassuring. It’s nice to know that there are still people in the world that believe in fairness and honoring commitments.

Nick: Yeah. You know what? Tonight’s on me.

Elena: No. You’re not paying anything. It’s not your fault that nate has no moral compass. But… if you do want to make up for your sister, you could cover my hotel bill.

Nick: Really hate what she did, but that is not gonna happen.

Elena: ‘Cause she’s family. I get it. And I promise I will not trash her in front of you. At least not right now.

Nate: Is that the good stuff?

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] It’s the decent stuff. We wouldn’t wanna get carried away again, would we?

[ Nate exhales ]

[ Glasses clink ] How are we, nate?

Nate: [ Inhales ] Uh, where do I begin? Uh, as far as the langston project goes–

Victoria: No, no. We’re– we’re good on the business end. I’m– I mean, you’ve made tremendous progress with langston and everything else.

Nate: Yeah.

Victoria: I’m talking about us. How are you? How are things with elena?

Nate: She moved out.

Victoria: Oh…

Nate: Got home to find she destroyed a picture of the two of us and left her keys behind.

Victoria: That must have been very difficult for you.

Nate: I never wanted her to get hurT.

Victoria: No. Nor did I. I guess we just– we just got wrapped up in the excitement.

Nate: It was more than that. For me, anyway.

Victoria: Well, that could be problematic for you if you’re hoping to reconcile. I mean, is that– is that your goal?

Nate: Things between elena and me are broken beyond repair.

Victoria: You can’t do anything to fix them?

Nate: The real issue is, I don’t want to.

Adam: So you have, uh, a no-newman clause in your contracts?

Sally: It’s not exactly in writing, but…

Adam: I mean, clarify this for me. Is it the name? Genetics? Is it anybody with newman dna, or is it everyone in– in the family of which you’re about to be a part of?

Sally: It’s you and nick, for obvious reasons.

Adam: Has there been any movement with chancellor-winters?

Sally: No, there hasn’t been any movement, but, you know, there’s other ways to grow our business, and if there’s one thing that chloe and I do best, it is pivot. You know, turn on a dime, make things happen. Will you respect my decision?

Adam: Sally… what don’t I respect about you?

Diane: Jack, you were about to tell me why daniel is sure that I’m not going to prison.

Jack: I think daniel just meant that if he thinks you’re innocent, it should be very easy to persuade a judge that you are.

Michael: Isn’t that right, daniel?

Daniel: Um, yeah. Yeah, I mean, it’s taken some time, but, um, you know, I’ve been confronted with some undeniable truths. I mean, it had to be stark, right?

Diane: Yes. I’ve always known he was involved.

Daniel: I– I think it’s a shame how he used you and my mom just to build his bank account and get revenge.

Diane: So you really believe me?

Daniel: I do.

Diane: Really? I mean, I’m– I’m sorry, it’s just my life has been such a nightmare lately, and I’ve almost given up hope. I mean, I’m wearing this ankle monitor, but… but now I have your belief in me. And, I mean, if you can believe me with all the manufactured evidence that’s out there, then anything’s possible, right? Look, I know how passionately summer believes that I’m guilty, so I can only imagine what this is costing you. I mean, I– I know it’s just so hard to figure out the right thing to do when your whole world is turned upside-down. So your secret’s safe with us, daniel. You’re a good man. And I hope you know that phyllis was so very proud of you, and I can see why.

Daniel: I– I can’t do this.

Diane: I’m– daniel, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I just– I don’t know what’s going on with me.

Jack: The only thing you need to know right now is that everyone in this room knows you are innocent, and we are gonna work like the devil to make sure everyone else knows as well.

Diane: It’s a very generous endorsement, daniel. Thank you. Now, would you mind swearing to that in front of a judge and jury? [ Laughs ] I mean, it couldn’t hurt, right?

Michael: Well, I think we’re gonna keep daniel’s support of our case kinda safely tucked into our back pocket until we figure out a way to fit him into our narrative. I mean, there are a lot of moving parts, and elements of this case are changing every day.

Diane: I know, I know. Let the professionals do their job.

Kyle: You sure there’s nothing we can do, dad, to make this more bearable for mom?

Jack: We have the very best lawyer. With any luck, we will find the evidence we need.

Michael: Yeah, and– and the proof we’re looking for, uh, it can be a bit slippery. That’s why we didn’t wanna raise your hopes.

Diane: Oh, well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but you already have. I have daniel in my corner now. So good things can happen. I’ll just… I’ll just keep hoping for more. All right.

Kyle: See that? The way she latched on to daniel’s support?

Jack: I am not going to break her heart with more false promises.

Kyle: We need phyllis.

Michael: We’ve gotta get her to come back home.

Daniel: And make it safe for her to turn herself in. No prison time.

Michael: I can’t even begin to touch that case. I’m focused on diane. And we say nothing to her until we have phyllis in hand.

Nate: Truth is, I’m not the same man I was when elena and I met. I want different things.

Victoria: You were both doctors.

Nate: Those hours, that lifestyle, it was so easy to just fall into a rhythm. Everything became so routine.

Victoria: That’s natural. But it just seemed like your heart wasn’t in it anymore.

Nate: Mmm. Once this went, the passion for the job did too. And after that, the relationship. But… coming here, it made me see my world in a new light. Who I am. The man I wanna be.

Victoria: And who is that?

Nate: Who they say I am in the papers. Unstoppable and exceeding expectations.

Victoria: You’re on that road.

Nate: But when it comes to relationships, I am lost.

Victoria: Maybe I was right when I said that you needed more than elena could give you.

Nate: She wants the version of me that doesn’t exist anymore. And she just couldn’t understand it or accept it. But… I never wanted her to get hurt.

Victoria: No, of course not.

Nate: But I wouldn’t have allowed myself to act on this connection I feel toward you if I hadn’t been looking for something else. Something more.

Sally: [ Sighs ] You can’t say things like that, adam.

Adam: Look, that’s not what I meant. Okay, maybe it came out the wrong way. You’ll have to forgive me.

[ Sighs ] Sometimes when we were together, it’s like nothing has changed between us.

Sally: Yeah, but everything has. And I don’t want you to lose sight of that, ’cause… I haven’T.

Adam: Okay, wait. You– you think what I said was some grand romantic pronouncement?

Sally: I think it just slipped out, which makes it even more dangerous than if it was a planned attack. Look, we– we have boundaries. And I think you need to do a better job of paying attention.

Adam: You think that I need to watch what I say?

Sally: If that’s what it takes. Look, I want you to be a part of this child’s life and to be the best father that you can be. But that is all that I want from you.

Adam: Um, look, I– I realize that you were trying to do the right thing–

Sally: You need to stop accidentally saying things that you shouldn’t say to someone who isn’t yours. This baby is yours. But I’m with nick. Type 2 diabetes?

Nick: All right, it’s that time. It’s everyone’s favorite time, you know, when I offer my unsolicited advice. I’m just a dude who’s been there on both sides, so take that for what you wilL.

Elena: I guess that’s what makes it worth more than you think.

Nick: In that case, treat this like a root canal. Do nothing. I’m serious, elena. Nothing. Don’t drunk dial. No big financial decisions. Just chill. Just give yourself time to breathe.

Elena: Yeah, and what about the podcast I’m supposed to do with newman?

Nick: You can do whatever you want. I’m serious. It’s your call. You can keep it. You can kick it to the curb. We can find some workaround. We can make sure you will never see nate if you want. You could even work remotely if you’d like. But you never have to see him.

Elena: Must be tough for you. Not having the same luxury, with your family expanding in unexpected ways.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Ah. Talking about, uh, me, sally, adam, and the baby.

Elena: Yeah. It can’t be easy.

Nick: Well, despite the onslaught of negative comments from my parents, adam’s constant hovering, and sally feeling like she’s being torn in nine different directions…

Elena: Oh, I’m so sorry.

Nick: That’s all right. This might sound crazy… um, my parents think I’m beyond help. But you wanna know something?

Elena: What?

Nick: I’m the happiest I’ve been in a very long time. And it just hit me that is a terrible thing to say to someone who just had their heart broken. I apologize.

Elena: [ Laughs ] Stop. You’re in love, and that is a beautiful and rare thing. Embrace it. Revel in it. Celebrate it.

Nick: Yeah, maybe I will.

Elena: Maybe? You better. Do it for me. Do it for her. Do it for love.

[ Glasses clink ]

Adam: I’m sorry. I got ahead of myself. Guess I was just excited about the possibility of us working together again.

Sally: You have to move on.

Adam: Just find somebody? Fall in love again?

Sally: You deserve that. Someone who’s meant for you. Someone who sees what an incredible man you are. A woman who you can give your whole heart to.

Adam: And you really think that there’s someone like that out there from me?

Sally: Of course. And when you look at each other, you’ll think “that’s my whole world.”

Adam: And just live happily ever after?

Sally: Why not? Look, I have a feeling whenever you hold our little girl in your arms, you are gonna realize that you were meant for one woman. And she’s gonna make you wanna be the best adam that there can be. This girl’s gonna change your life.

Adam: She already has.

Sally: Well, good. There’s just one other thing that I really need you to do, and I need you to take this to heart. You need to find a way to let me go.

Kyle: Who were the bodies they used for dead phyllis and the emt?

Michael: I’d like to know the answer to that myself. I’ve got an investigator on it.

Daniel: It’s probably one of the darkest things about this whole issue. John and jane doe already dead, unknowingly giving their bodies to a lie.

Jack: And then, of course, there’s the proof out there that is living and breathing, and no one knows about it but us. When can we tell christine that her murder victim is alive?

Michael: When we’re in contact with phyllis, d she’s in town and she’s under surveillance, whether she wants to be or not. She knows coming back here, she could be charged for stark’s murder.

Jack: She should be arrested as soon as they find her, for her security, for our safety. She needs to testify or sign a sworn statement.

Kyle: Summer will run out there and find phyllis herself.

Daniel: It’s one of the many reasons why we agreed that we have to hold off on telling her.

Kyle: Hey, you’re not the ones who have to look into her eyes every day. If she finds out phyllis is alive–

Daniel: She will.

Michael: When the time is right.

Jack: Michael, daniel, uh, thank you. Michael, for all you do. Daniel, thank you for sharing your encounter with phyllis. You didn’t have to tell us any of that, and it changes everything for us.

Daniel: I hope so. I gotta run.

Michael: Yeah. I’ll be in touch.

Jack: Okay, go ahead. Say it. I know you have very strong feelings against my decision.

Kyle: I hate it. Summer needs to know.

Jack: Well, she will know eventually. We can’t tell her–

[ Stammers ] Why are you being so insistent on this?

Kyle: Because I know what it’s like to have people tell you that your mother is dead. I look into her eyes and I know what she feels, how much she misses her, how much it hurts. How she wants to hold her one more time, make more memories. Thing is? She can do all of that, because her mother is out there somewhere, alive. But I have a wife who is crying herself to sleep and blaming my mother for phyllis’s supposed death. We could be out there living our lives again. I’m not doing this any longer. I am telling summer.

Nate: I’m not sure what I was looking for. This is all uncharted territory for me. An adventure I could have never anticipated.

Victoria: I feel the same way.

Nate: And I find myself drawn to you. Explain to me how we can know each other for so many years in so many ways, and now, when it’s insanely inappropriate…

Victoria: This attraction…

Nate: Constantly wanting more of you.

Victoria: I feel the same way.

Nate: So you want me?

Victoria: Isn’t obvious?

[ Sighs ] I very much enjoyed our time in california together. I think the two of us working together is beneficial.

Nate: Agreed.

Victoria: However…

Nate: Oh, no strings. No buts.

Victoria: Well, that’s good, because that means that your future is completely in your hands. Your own hands.

[ Nate chuckles ] So where do you want things to go from here? – We got this! – Great! – Bye!

Adam: What makes you think that I haven’t let you go?

Sally: I can see it in the way that you look at me. In the way that you smile at me. Your words.

Adam: I– I can’t be happy?

Sally: Yeah. Be overjoyed about the baby, but from a respectful distance. Look, this is not a request, okay? It’s– it’s a requirement.

Adam: Okay, um, is there an expiration date on my banishment? Should I expect a birth announcement by email, or– or what?

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Okay, adam. I will keep you abreast on all the doctor’s appointments.

Adam: Oh, thank you. Thank you.

Sally: And I will see to it that you receive a regular report of the baby’s health and growth.

Adam: That’s very considerate of you.

Sally: Okay. Maybe we both can find a level of contact that works for us. For all four of us. It’s for the best. And you’ll agree with me… eventually. Goodbye, adam.

[ Sighs ]

Nate: Wow. That’s a hell of a question.

Victoria: Was that too forward?

Nate: I didn’t say that. I just wasn’t expecting it. Where do I want things to go?

[ Exhales ] Huh… you first.

Victoria: All right. Well, to put it simply, I want more of you. More time with you. I wanna get to know you more.

Nate: Well, we want the same things. We just have to be careful on how we go about getting it.

Victoria: I understand that. I know that you need time to mourn your relationship. And I’m definitely gonna keep a respectful distance.

Nate: Oh, and you think that’ll make a difference? That I’ll want you any less?

[ Chuckles ] If anything, avoidance will make things worse. Waiting and wanting you?

Victoria: There’s no rush, right? Neither one of us is going anywhere. Besides that, anticipation is fun, I think.

Jack: I know you are frustrated. I’m frustrated too. But we have something we didn’t have before: The key to saving diane and ending summer’s grief.

Kyle: But what good is it if we can’t tell anyone?

Jack: We will, when all the pieces are in place. Look, it isn’t perfect, but, look, there have been improvements. Summer no longer feels she has to wage war against diane. And you saw how touched she was by daniel’s support.

Kyle: Yeah. And think of how great they’ll feel when they find out the truth.

Jack: Think how great they will feel when they find out the irrefutable proof that we have. We have no idea where it is or when it will ever come back to town. We can’t give them false promises.

Kyle: But we can’t keep this a secret forever.

Jack: No, of course we can’T. You’re right. There’s gotta be another way. Uh… I’m gonna call christine. Can you give me just that much time?

Kyle: Christine? Michael–

Jack: No– I– yeah, I’m gonna ask if she will meet with me. If she will, I– I will meet with her and come right back to you. But until then–

Kyle: No, I’m not making any more promises, dad. Okay. Fine. If I see summer, I will do my best to avoid the topic.

Jack: I will come right back after.

[ Door slams ]

[ Gasps softly ]

Sally: What is all this?

Nick: There is something I haven’t said to you yet, and it requires some embellishments.

Sally: What have you done?

Nick: What I’ve done is fallen completely in love with you.

Sally: Oh.

Nick: “Oh.”

[ Chuckles ] Okay. Uh, that’s not, um, not the response I was expecting.

Sally: No, no, no, no. It’s– it’s not that this isn’t the most wonderful thing that anyone has ever done for me, or… said to me.

Nick: I caught you off-guard. Yeah.

Sally: Why are you telling me now?

Nick: I was with someone tonight who reminded me that things are complicated. And they really are. I’m crazy about you, sally. I, uh… I think about you every minute of the day. You’re the best thing that’s happened to me in a very long time.

Sally: Even though your family is ready to disown you or lock you away until you come to your senses?

Nick: There isn’t anything or anyone that is gonna keep me away from you.

Sally: Promise?

Nick: You’re stuck with me.

Sally: Good. [ Laughs ]

[ Cell phone pings ]

Christine: Running late. On my way.

Jack: All right, christine. The sooner, the better.

[ Cell phone pings ]

Victor: Hello, jack.

[ Laughs ] You look as if you just saw a ghost.

Kyle: Magic? Harrison thinks so.

Diane: Well, then how many would you have to eat to get rid of that look in your eyes?

Kyle: Mom…

Diane: No, I just keep– I keep praying for a miracle that all of this will just… go away. One minute we’re planning our wedding, and– and the next, we’re planning my defense.

[ Chuckles ] You know what we should be planning? We should be planning a family vacation. You know, you and summer. You deserve some time away after all this. I mean, don’t ask me how we’d all be able to go, but… I don’t know, we could find some little hidden resort in a corner of the world, and–

Kyle: You can’t make this go away, mom. But I can. There’s something you need to know.

Tucker: Hey, jack. How goes it?

Jack: You know, just when I think you couldn’t stoop any lower, you couldn’t do any worse, you somehow always manage to surprise me. Let’s talk. Shall we?

[ Phone chiming ]

Daniel: Great.

Michael: Nice to see you too.

Daniel: Hey, um, do– do you have a minute?

Michael: Actually, I don’T.

Daniel: Good. Let’s go.

Michael: No. I mean, why? Where? And again, why?

Daniel: We need a lawyer and you’re the best in town.

Michael: Huh. Well, flattery will get you everywhere, but actually I’m working on diane’s case at the moment.

Daniel: We’re going to the abbott house.

Michael: Is this about diane?

Daniel: It’s about proving once and for all that she didn’t kill my mother.

Michael: Oh. What are we waiting for, then?

Billy: I wonder what’s keeping connor and chelsea?

Johnny: Maybe he just had his weekly nerd club meeting.

Billy: Easy. That’s your kid brother.

Johnny: Exactly. That’s why I get to say stuff like that. Back when he was just my cousin, it was a completely different story.

Billy: Right, right, right. So, let me get this straight. You can only say things like that if it comes from love?

Johnny: Yeah.

Billy: Ah. You two still gaming together?

Johnny: We haven’t played much lately.

Billy: Too much homework?

Johnny: Not for me. Also, when I try to talk to him at school, it’s like, I don’t know, like he’s avoiding me.

Billy: Really? Why? Why do you think that is?

Johnny: Don’t know. Maybe there’s something going on that no one’s told me about.

Billy: [ Sighs ] Yeah. Look, um… your uncle adam is having another baby. A girl.

Johnny: With sally?

Billy: Yes, with sally. Which, you know, gets a little awkward because your uncle nick is dating sally.

Johnny: Well, at least she’s gonna be too little to talk all day long. Unlike some people I know–

Billy: Easy. You are talking about my daughter, young man.

Johnny: Mm. Well, maybe connor’s getting the better deal with his sister. When he gets here I’ll offer him to trade.

Connor: Trade what?

Harmony: Oh, my gosh! Will you look at this handsome little man?

Devon: Dominic…

Chelsea: Really? This is the first time this kid’s ever turned down a snack.

Billy: You know, there are benefits to having a sister. There are. Why don’t you fill him in? Tell– tell the young man all the great things.

Johnny: Well, first time she burps the way you taught her to, that’s cool. Also, you can take your broccoli from your plate and just put it on her plate–

Billy: Okay. You’re done. Cut off.

Johnny: Hey, I speak the truth.

Billy: Don’t listen to anything he says.

Chelsea: What can we get you, sweetheart? Do you want a pizza?

Johnny: I’m in.

Billy: What do you want, buddy?

Connor: Nothing.

Billy: Nothing like nothing on your pizza or just like nothing at all?

Connor: Nothing! At all.

Devon: You know, you’re definitely gonna have to visit a lot more often ’cause dominic clearly is in love with you. You wore him out.

Harmony: [ Laughs ] That’s the joy of being a grandmother, you know? It’s a different kind of love.

Devon: Yeah, I guess so.

Harmony: You know it makes me think of my own mother? God, she used to love you up.

Devon: Oh, I remember. I was very lucky. I’ve had a lot of incredible people in my life.

Harmony: Yes. And you’re making every single one of them incredibly proud.

Devon: Yeah.

Harmony: Especially as a dad.

Devon: Well, that means everything to me. So, thank you.

Harmony: Yeah. And now you’ve got tucker on your side.

Devon: Mm.

Harmony: I mean, it’s good of him to be making the effort, I suppose.

Devon: Yeah. It’s better late than never.

Harmony: You gotta give the guy some credit, right?

Devon: Do I?

Harmony: [ Sighs ] Listen, okay? The sad and awful truth is, is not everybody’s cut out to be a parent. Okay? And– or takes to it as naturally as neil did. And by the time most people figure that out about themselves, it’s too late. You’re lucky to have had him.

Devon: Yeah. I… having neil as a role model has changed my whole world. I wanna ask you a question, though.

Harmony: Ask away.

Devon: I know I kinda put you on the spot the other night when I asked your opinion about me changing my last name.

Harmony: You mean like all those people standing around? What would I have said if it was just the two of us?

Devon: Yeah, something like that.

Harmony: Okay. Well, here’s your chance.

Devon: Okay. Are you really okay with me doing that? And going by devon winters?

[ Sighs ]

Tucker: I feel like I’ve been called into the principal’s office. What’s my offense? Was that your half a grapefruit I ate this morning?

Jack: What is your excuse for what you did to diane?

Tucker: You’re gonna have to be more specific.

Jack: Trying to convince her to leave town right after I managed to get a judge to allow us to post bail. Why would you put her freedom in jeopardy?

Tucker: Is that how she framed it? That’s not wholly accurate. I just helped her face facts.

Jack: Oh, and what are the facts according to tucker mccall?

Tucker: Well, the evidence is starting to pile up against her, jack. And she’s got her checkered past to contend with also. So, I merely illustrated her choices, which are, according to tucker mccall, uh, to re-traumatize you and her son by putting you both through a very public trial, which will most likely lead to her conviction, or she can leave.

Jack: Oh, so, did you give her this little pep talk at ashley’s behest?

Tucker: Yeah. No. No, not at all. You know, diane and I have a history of our own, and I care about her.

Jack: She does not need you to tell her what she is up against.

Tucker: I don’t think you’re quite getting what I’m talking about here. She has to convince not only a judge, but half the people in this town, and her daughter-in-law, that she is blameless in this. And if you think that coming back to genoa city has earned diane anything but sneers and whispers, think again. And now she’s charged with murder. And you think I’m a bad guy for telling her to get out while she can? I used to wait to run my dishwasher

Jack: You’ve forgotten one very important thing: Diane is innocent.

Tucker: As if that matters. Well, it matters to you, of course. But, jack, you know as well as I do, the people in this town never let go of anything. And this stain on diane is just gonna trickle down all the way to harrison.

Jack: What are you talking about?

Tucker: Well, do you think that walnut grove is going to sell diane’s brownies at their bake sale? And are you sure your companies are gonna survive her presence in your life? Listen, even if she is found innocent, she’s always going to be labeled genoa city’s murderer. Period. I mean, do you really want to help her?

Jack: Of course, I do.

Tucker: Okay. Then do whatever you can, legally or otherwise, to get her the hell out of this place. Anyway, I’m gonna take my leave of you now, gonna find a nice quiet place to relax and enjoy my life. Everyone’s so tense around here, bro.

[ Tucker sighs ]

[ Door slams shut ]

Devon: I wanna make sure that you know that by me doing this, it doesn’t change what you mean to me or I don’t–

Harmony: Well–

Devon: I’m not gonna forget where I come from.

Harmony: That’s good to know.

Devon: It’s the truth. It just feels right to go by winters.

Harmony: A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, right?

Devon: I’m getting shakespeare.

[ Harmony laughs ]

Harmony: You know, I have gone by a few names myself. Doesn’t change what’s on the inside. You can call yourself the crown prince of genoa city. Okay? You will always be my son. Can you imagine living in a world where you weren’t free to be who you wanna be? My grandson, he is the luckiest kid in the world. He’s gonna be able to grow up to be a– a what? A– a musician or a business tycoon or even a statesman.

Devon: Yeah.

Harmony: All of the above or anything in between.

Devon: He can do it all. He can be a carpenter.

Harmony: Right?

Devon: Be a pilot.

[ Both laugh ]

Harmony: A world without limits and you ought make it fun for him, you know? That way, he won’t know that he’s learning. He’ll just learn to love it, whatever it is.

[ Xylophone toy dings ]

Devon: That’s true.

[ Laughs ] That’s very true. It was really nice to see you playing with him today. He was… he was having a lot of fun.

Harmony: Wasn’t he?

Devon: Yeah.

Harmony: You know, I used to play with you like that.

Devon: I remember.

Harmony: Oh, no, you don’T. You–

Devon: I do.

Harmony: That’s impossible.

Devon: No, it’s not. I definitely remember. We used to build forts all the time. We used to build forts with all those blankets that we had and you would make snacks.

Harmony: Yes. Cheese and crackers.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Harmony: Yep. I did the best with what I had.

Devon: Yeah. And you always had music playing, too.

Harmony: Mm. Now, what is life without music?

[ Clicks tongue ]

Devon: Those are good memories.

Harmony: Mm. They weren’t anything special.

Devon: They were very special to me. It was the times that were good that you never forget.

Harmony: Yeah.

Devon: I didn’t mean to say that to make you feel bad or…

Harmony: It’s all good. I know what you meant. I know there was a lot of not so good times. I’m sorry about that.

Devon: It’s okay, mom. You’re here. You’re here today.

Harmony: Mm.

> Devon: You’re here today. And dominic gets to grow up and have you in his life. And he gets to have the best of you. He gets to have a grandmother that’ll get on the floor with him and play with toys and make sound effects like you used to do with me.

Harmony: Yeah, those were some fun memories, weren’t they?

Devon: They were really fun times. And no matter what I’m ever going through in my life, remembering those fun times with you, it always put a smile on my face.

Billy: Let me tell you a little something about a ham and pineapple pizza. Okay? Don’t make that face. I know. I get it. It sounds like total chaos on a pizza crust, but it’s perfect. The sweetness of the pineapple coming together with the saltiness of the ham, I mean, it’s divine.

Chelsea: Ooh. I’m down. New is good.

Billy: New is good.

Johnny: Ooh, okay. Um, how about we get two pizzas? One for the people with the dead taste buds and one for the bros.

Billy: Mm.

Connor: Is this the part where we do the pretending?

Chelsea: Sweetheart, what are you talking about?

Connor: Everything. That’s not the point.

Billy: Okay. I could use a little bit of fresh air. What do you say? You wanna join me, connor? Yeah. Of course, you do. You don’t mind, do you?

Chelsea: Not at all.

Billy: Okay. Come on. After you.

[ Chelsea exhales ]

[ Door closes ]

Kyle: Hey. Where’s mom?

Jack: She is upstairs resting.

Kyle: Oh, she’s sleeping in an actual bed in a quiet room after getting outta jail. She must feel like royalty.

Jack: Yeah. We finally get her out of that den of thieves and she comes home to a full dose of our resident bottom feeder.

Kyle: Mm. Tucker? What happened?

Jack: I– I don’t want you worrying about tucker. How are things going with summer?

Kyle: Every time I try to get her to sit and talk to me, she jumps up and finds an excuse to take off.

Jack: To where?

Kyle: She packed up harrison and they took off to parts unknown, which is actually fine because the less she knows about me trying to dig up info on stark, the better.

Jack: I hate that you’re involved in any of that. I know I can’t stop you. Promise me you will be careful.

[ Knock at door ]

Kyle: I got it. Daniel.

Daniel: Hey, kyle. Is your dad home?

Kyle: Yeah, he’s in there.

Daniel: Uh, whoa, whoa. We got one more coming.

Kyle: Who?

Michael: Hey.

Kyle: Hey.

Michael: That would be me.

Kyle: What’s going on? Dad?

Jack: I am not sure I know myself.

Michael: That makes three of us.

Daniel: Where’s summer?

Kyle: She’s out.

Daniel: Good. Good. I don’t– I don’t think she’s ready for what I’m about to say.

Jack: What’s going on, daniel? What’s wrong?

Billy: So, look, buddy, it’s a lot, right? You know, it’s kind of a big deal to find out that you’re gonna have a new baby sister. I get that. But that doesn’t mean your parents are gonna love you any less.

Connor: I know that. I’m not five.

Billy: No, you’re not. And that’s a good thing. So, why don’t you tell me what the problem is?

Connor: Because my life is picture perfect?

Billy: Well, you know, now that I think about it, you do have a lot going on. But everybody does. So, why don’t you be specific. Why don’t you tell me what you’re upset about?

Connor: Does it even matter?

Johnny: Should we start with ice cream?

Chelsea: Mm. Words to live by.

[ Chelsea exhales ]

Johnny: Sorry, I’m not really good at being a helpful big brother.

Chelsea: But you’re katie’s big brother.

Johnny: Yeah. And she’s not really the worst as far as siblings go. Please do not tell her I said that.

Chelsea: Cross my heart. You may not know this, but katie is crazy about you. I never had a brother or sister, so katie’s lucky to have you. And connor is, too, even though he doesn’t act like it all the time.

Johnny: I’ll be right back.

[ Sighing ]

Harmony: You know, I have a lot of good memories of our time together.

Devon: Do you?

Harmony: Yeah. One in particular.

Devon: What is it?

Harmony: Um, you were about four or five, I don’t remember, but it doesn’t matter. Um, there was this park near our place.

Devon: Yeah, yeah.

Harmony: It’s this little sliver of land with, like, these bushes and swings and, um, there were these two toy cars sitting out there, almost like they were sitting there waiting for their owner to come back.

Devon: Mm.

Harmony: And so we stopped and we looked around and there was nobody around. So, the next morning when we came back, you’d sneak a look to see, because you were afraid somebody might have come and claimed them, right? And so you go, “one more day. One more day, mama. And then I can take ’em home.” And I’m like, “well, that sounds fair to me.”

Devon: And then what happened?

Harmony: Said you waited three whole days because you didn’t want some kid to come back and not be able to find his toys.

Devon: Oh.

Harmony: Yeah. You just couldn’t handle that. But when we came back to the park–

Devon: They were still there?

Harmony: Yep. And you brought them home and you put them up on the shelf and you took such good care of them, like they were gold. Yeah. And that’s when I knew who you were.

Devon: And who’s that?

Harmony: A man that was willing to wait for his blessings. Who is generous. Who thinks about other people and wants to give other people a chance. And a man who really likes cars.

Devon: [ Laughs ] You got the car part right for sure.

Harmony: Yeah. You know, it’s like those cars were meant for you. Like, this whole life that you’ve created for yourself, it’s meant for you. That’s why I know that dominic will get all the blessings that were meant for him. And I’m not talking about toys and money. I’m talking about the things that money can’t buy. You know, never-ending supply of people who will love and support and guide him. He’s a very lucky little man indeed.

Daniel: Look, you don’t understand. I have seen my mother.

Michael: I’ve seen your mother, too.

Daniel: You have?

Michael: Yeah. In my thoughts.

Daniel: No, no, no, no. Michael, I’m talking about in real life. Living, breathing, speaking. Look, I got a phone call the other night, I don’t know from who. They asked me to meet them in the park at the lookout. So, I went. It was mom. I mean, I thought I was hallucinating, but she was real. Her death was a lie.

Kyle: Wait, wait. Why didn’t she call summer?

Daniel: I don’t know, kyle. I don’t know. Maybe she thought that summer was too loyal to you and jack and she couldn’t trust her to be unbiased.

Michael: Did she tell you what happened the night of the gala?

Daniel: She did. She told me the whole story. She told me that stark had concocted this whole scheme to try and take down diane, just as we all suspected. And stark coerced her to– to help him. But he lied to her. He manipulated her. He threatened her. And eventually, she gave in and she did whatever he demanded.

Jack: What about the fight? We– and we all saw her collapse.

Daniel: We did. It was all staged, jack. And then after she was dead, she decided, you know, she was having second thoughts. She wanted to come back and tell everyone the truth. But– but stark, he– that’s when he attacked her. You know, he had set up the revenge, the money, the disappearance. He had set that all up so perfectly that he wasn’t about to let her ruin his plan.

Jack: Oh, my god.

Daniel: Everybody already thought she was dead. Nobody was gonna be looking for her. Nobody was gonna be missing her. She would’ve been just another body to dispose of. So, she did what she had to do. She didn’t have any other choice. She grabbed a pair of scissors–

Michael: Wait, phyllis? Phyllis killed stark?

Daniel: A convicted criminal–

Kyle: Murdered–

Daniel: Self-defense. It was self-defense. Listen, I’m telling you, I weighed out what she told me. I mean, it’s pretty clear to me that it was either his life or hers. From where I’m sitting, I think she made the right choice.

Kyle: This is insane.

Michael: And yet it’s the only thing that’s made sense so far.

Jack: And it is the irrefutable proof we’ve been looking for that diane is innocent.

Kyle: Just like we said from the start.

Jack: I wanna move on this. I want her name cleared. I want the charges dropped.

Michael: All right, hold on. Hold on. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I don’t wanna refute your irrefutable proof. But… where is phyllis now?

Daniel: I have no idea. When you have chronic kidney disease.

Jack: I… [Stammering] I don’t know what to think.

Kyle: Phyllis, alive, all this time.

Jack: Daniel, when you saw her, what–

Michael: First things first. Let’s backtrack. Do you have any proof what you’re saying is real? Did you take a picture?

Daniel: No. Michael, I didn’t take a picture. I wasn’t thinking straight. I didn’t know if it was a prank. I– I didn’t even know if anybody was gonna show up.

Michael: All right. Well, how did she get to the park? Was she driven? Did she drive? I wonder what route she–

Jack: You could get a video capture from cctv.

Kyle: I knew mom was innocent. And– and phyllis is alive. I need to tell summer.

Daniel: Don’T. Don’t do that.

Kyle & jack: What? Why not? This changes everything for her, for us. Look, she reached out to you.

Daniel: Exactly. She came to me, kyle. I mean, that kinda news, it could break summer’s heart. I don’t want her tearing herself up inside wondering why mom came to me and not to her. Why I was the one that she trusted with this and why she was left out in the cold. It’s the kind of thing that could leave a kid with some hurt feelings.

Jack: Hurt feelings? People’s lives are at stake, daniel.

Kyle: You’re gonna keep this from her for how long?

Jack: Phyllis put us through hell! All so that she could get diane behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit. And now you don’t want us to tell summer? When do the lies and deception stop?

Billy: Look, being mad is like having a rock in your shoe. It’s not fun. But that’s why we’re here. We’re here to try and help you. That’s what we wanna do.

Connor: You just don’t get it.

Billy: You’re right. I don’t get everything. So, why don’t you tell me. What am I missing?

Johnny: Well, you’ve never had someone bring a whole new human being home and just been like, “here, this is yours. Forever. Get over it.”

Billy: That’s true. But you love your sister.

Johnny: Yeah, but you always have company even if you don’t always want it.

Billy: Look, connor, you don’t have to fall in love with the idea right now.

Johnny: But there’s nothing you can do about it, so…

Connor: Oh, my god! Do we have to keep doing this? I’m fine. It’s great. Can we go back inside?

Tucker: Hello!

Devon: Tucker.

Tucker: How you doing?

Devon: Come on in, man.

Tucker: Thanks.

Devon: Glad you’re here.

Tucker: Hey! There she’S. You’re glad I’m here?

Devon: Glad you’re here. Yeah.

Tucker: Uh-oh. [ Chuckles ] I shudder to think why.

Devon: I just appreciate you getting in touch with my mom and letting her know about neil’s party the other night.

Tucker: I’m just happy to see you both together.

Harmony: Well, you know, miracles happen. I mean, look at you. You’re still alive and kicking even after all the hell you’ve raised, so if that isn’t a miracle…

Tucker: Where’s dom?

Devon: Oh.

Harmony: He’s asleep.

Tucker: Ah, see? I know I should’ve called. Hey, did you show her how good he is on that little keyboard?

Devon: I didn’t have to because she brought him the whole band.

Harmony: [ Laughs ] Okay. That’s not true. I just– I bought him the basic essentials that every little budding musician needs, you know?

Tucker: Like?

Harmony: Like the guitar, a little tiny trumpet, little baby drums.

Tucker: I like the way you think.

Harmony: [ Laughs ] And you should watch him. The way he discovers each instrument, you know? Like, loving the sounds. And what can this do? He’s like a budding phenom in the making.

Devon: Well, I’ll be sure to call both of you at 5:00 A.M. When he’s playing those drums on a saturday and see how cute he really is. [ Laughs ]

Harmony: What can I say? It’s the family curse. And what about you? When are you gonna get back to the basics? You know, music used to be your life. You can’t tell me that you don’t miss the studio instead of an office. You need to tell devon that he needs to take some time and get back to what matters.

Tucker: I no longer offer unsolicited opinions per the new terms of our relationship.

Harmony: Mm. Well, lucky for you, you and I haven’t made such an agreement, so you’re about to get an earful from me.

Devon: Oh, yeah?

Harmony: Okay. I’m gonna keep it short and sweet.

Devon: Okay.

Harmony: You need to get back to your calling.

Devon: My calling.

Harmony: Mm-hmm. Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Jack: So, you’re telling me that phyllis, who went on and on about how despicable diane was to leave her son and her friends behind to mourn, did exactly the same thing?

Daniel: She was forced to do what she did.

Jack: Well, I’d like to think she didn’t do it by choice.

Daniel: She wasn’t herself, jack. Everyone that she loved deserted her. Nobody believed her.

Jack: Why didn’t she ask for help?

Daniel: Oh, well, that’s– that’s easy. Would you have helped her if she asked you? Yeah. Look, does she regret what she did? You better believe she does. But she’s been punished enough, by us, by herself. Yes, she made some shortsighted choices to trust the wrong man. And she couldn’t turn to us before. But we can’t let her down now.

Devon: So, how am I supposed to go back to running a soundboard when I’m busy running a business and raising a genius that’s upstairs? It’s a lot of work, you know.

Harmony: Okay. You can’t call it work when you love what you do. And the last I checked, you still have blue notes and hi-hats and slick cats in your blood.

Devon: I always will, but…

Harmony: [ Laughs ] I do.

Jack: Daniel, I know you’ve been put through a lot, but don’t try to lay the blame at my feet. I had nothing to do with the choices your mother made.

Daniel: You sure about that? ‘Cause as far as I can tell, this all started when you wouldn’t listen to her about diane.

Jack: She had other friends. She could have turned to lauren or michael.

Michael: Has she tried to contact you since you saw her?

Daniel: As a matter–

Jack: You know what, get– just get her to come back. We’ll let the police straighten this out.

Daniel: Really? So, you just want her arrested and locked up after she’s already been traumatized by stark?

Jack: That was good enough for diane.

Daniel: So is your forgiveness, jack. I hope you’ll remember that when my mom’s return is the only thing standing between a life of freedom and a life behind bars for diane.

Michael: I’m gonna ask you again. Have you heard from your mother since you saw her in the park?

Daniel: No. No, I haven’T.

Kyle: We need to call christine. There’s gotta be a way to use daniel’s statement to get the state to drop their murder charges.

Daniel: And– and to clear my mother of any wrongdoing, since stark was behind this whole thing. Now that he’s dead, I mean, the case is moot, right?

Michael: As much as I’d like to make this all go away, I’m afraid it’s not gonna play out quite the way you’d like.

Billy: Let’s just give this one more minute and then we’ll head back inside. Okay? Promise.

Connor: You hated me and my mom when you found out she was your bio mom.

Johnny: At first, yeah. It sucked. Then it just… didn’T. And now I love hanging out with you and her. I just needed a second.

Connor: Because you have someone else to boss around and lecture. I was talking to billy, not you. For copd, ask your doctor about breztri.

Harmony: [ Sighs ] It’s just that when you have a god-given talent– and let’s face it, it is in his dna, okay? It is an affront to the universe for him to not put it out there, you know?

Tucker: Yeah.

Harmony: Put it to good use for the world to enjoy.

Tucker: Uh, no comment…

[ Laughs ] On this debate or any other debate. I’m still on shaky ground with him. With everyone, it seems.

Harmony: I hope everything’s okay with you and ashley after I left you two the other night. I mean, given our past…

Tucker: Oh.

Harmony: Bound to be some ruffled feathers when I come on to the scene.

Tucker: Future is all that matters.

[ Devon humming ]

Harmony: Mm.

[ Tucker laughs ]

Harmony: Well, I guess if he has to put music aside, I can’t think of a better reason.

Tucker: Yep.

Harmony: Yeah.

Tucker: You know, I realize that our relationship was not all sunshine and roses, but at least we got devon out of it, right?

Harmony: Mm.

Tucker: And now dom.

Harmony: Yeah. I feel like we’re the lucky ones.

Tucker: Mm-hmm.

Johnny: Why are you mad at me? What did I do? I mean, what’s the big deal anyways?

Billy: Well, he thinks it’s a big deal right now. And he’s not feeling like his best self.

Connor: Nobody asked you to come out here.

Billy: Okay. Listen, we’re family, okay? He loves you. You’re just gonna have to get used to that. But you’re right. Families have a way of inserting themselves in situations whenever they want. Sometimes it’s a good thing. Most of the time it’s great. But we will table that conversation ’til a more peaceful time.

Johnny: Yeah, that’s gonna happen.

Billy: Hey, you’re not helping right now.

[ Johnny sighing ] Look, connor… you got a lot going on right now. Okay? And I’m sure it feels like it’s all out of control. But you’re growing up and all those things that are clouding your view of the world, well, sometimes they end up bigger than you ever expect. If you need some time and some space to process all of this, that’s totally fine. But you gotta trust your mother. You need to tell her what’s going on inside of here. Okay? You gotta at least give her a hint.

Connor: If it’ll get everybody to back off, fine.

[ Johnny sighs ]

Billy: I think that went pretty well.

Johnny: Mm.

Kyle: Everything will work out. Phyllis is alive. The state will have to drop the charges.

Daniel: Yeah. And I can sign an affidavit or whatever. I’m all you need to prove that diane’s not a killer.

Michael: I need evidence. What I don’t need is the word of a grieving son who has just seen his mother days after she purportedly died.

[ Huffs ] Damn it! That’s the legal system talking. That’s not me. I am sorry. There is a mountain of evidence to refute your word, daniel. And if you go in front of a judge and start talking about apparitions from the grave, you are asking for trouble. Aiding and abetting, obstruction of justice charges.

Daniel: I was only trying to help.

Michael: And your knowledge of how stark was killed could make you look like a suspect.

Kyle: Phyllis is the only one who can clear her name now.

Daniel: I mean, she did the things that she did to try and protect the people that she loves. I mean, she could have died at any point during that plan. Stark sure as hell tried to kill her at the end. And if she didn’t defend herself, she’d be the one who we found floating face down in a lake. Michael, come on, there’s gotta be something you could do to help her.

Michael: You know there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for phyllis. And if she’s really alive, you have no idea how happy I will be. But the cold truth is, I am representing diane and it would be a conflict of interest for me to try to fix things for phyllis. I’m not even sure that I could spin her story that– so that she doesn’t come off… not so great. But everything is a long shot without evidence.

Jack: Look, I’m gonna call christine just to test the waters off the record, throw out a few hypotheticals, see what kind of response I get.

Michael: Jack–

Jack: And I have to tell dianE.

Michael: Jack! Just please hold off on that. We don’t know where phyllis is or how to find her, or even if she would come back with us once we did. No, there are just– just too many variables. We can’t tell anyone about this. We have to be very careful and take it a step at a time.

Jack: Oh, god…

Daniel: Can we meet?

[ Sighs ]

Sharon: Summer, you’re not leaving already, are you?

Summer: I– I forgot I have something that I really need to take care of.

Sharon: Well, wait, let me get you a cup of coffee first, or a hug.

[ Sighs ]

Ashley: Thanks for the break. I should get back to work.

Tucker: Hold on. Not until you’ve told me why you’ve been distracted this whole time. Don’t tell me you’ve grown inured to my charms.

Ashley: Is that even humanly possible?

Tucker: No.

Ashley: It’s her.

Tucker: Oh, diane?

Ashley: Of course. How did this happen? How is she out on bail and living with us?

Tucker: Karmic payback for something we did in our past life, or this one? Hard to say.

Ashley: You know, I don’t understand. Jack and kyle think she’s so wonderful. They think she’s a saint after everything that she’s done to them and now she’s charged with murder. It doesn’t matter. How does she pull this off?

Tucker: She’s a master manipulator. I’m so sorry you’re so upset about it.

Ashley: How could I not be upset? Jack thinks I’m unreasonable because I have qualms about sharing a home with somebody who’s been accused of murder. She can’t go anywhere because of her ankle monitor. I’m stuck with her. God, then she’s driven this huge wedge between jack and me.

Tucker: How does any judge allow a flight risk like diane out on bail? The woman knows how to disappear.

Ashley: [ Sighs] I wish she’d do it again.

Sally: [ Groans] There, are you satisfied? Can I get back to work now?

[ Phone ringing ]

[ Sighs ] Hello.

Adam: Sally, great news. Mccall is officially all mine.

Sally: Congratulations.

Adam: Victor agreed to my terms. No meddling. I have complete autonomy, which includes all staffing decisions.

Sally: Well, I still haven’t had a chance to–

Adam: Yeah, I know that you wanted some time to think it over and I’m not trying to pressure you. But I have been digging into the mess that tucker made and I am eager to get my team in place. There’s so much to do and I think that you’re gonna be as excited by the challenge as I am.

Sally: Well, I have to talk to chloe before I can get back to you about the offer.

Adam: This could be a real opportunity for us to turn a total failure into a major success.

Sally: Okay. I will let you know.

Nick: Sounds like good news. Let me guess, jill loved your pitch and is ready to offer you a lucrative contract.

Sally: Not quite. I need to talk to you about something.

Nick: Okay.

Sally: But I need you to promise me to hear me out and not rush to judgment.

Adam: How are you?

Adam: Tucker. Enjoying early retirement? It must be nice to be out from under the burden of a failing empire.

Tucker: Well, adam, as the buddha said, sitting under the bodhi tree, “why don’t you kiss my ass?”

[ Ashley laughs, coughs ]

Adam: Well, in case you haven’t heard, mccall unlimited is mine. I’m now in charge of trying to salvage your failed company.

Tucker: I did hear that. I– I heard that victor intended to hand it over to you, as a bailout for your failures at jabot and newman.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Uh, actually, victor knew that I wanted a challenge. It’s kind of hard to know what to tackle first. I mean, the mismanaged books and the exodus of any talented staff you once had, or just the terrible mccall name. I mean, can I ask you a serious question? How did you let things get so bad?

Ashley: I think he was busy becoming a better person, adam, and got a little distracted. Didn’t notice that incompetence had kind of run into the ground.

Adam: Mm. Well, self-improvement can be a burden.

Ashley: How would you know?

Adam: Uh, luckily, I understand the value of a work-life balance. Although that– that’s gonna be put to the test trying to make this company better.

Ashley: Ooh, that’s hilarious. You should be so grateful that you are allowed to run anything bigger than a lemonade stand.

Adam: Oh, it’s gonna be fun–

Ashley: Mm-hmm.

Adam: — Turning this into a major success, something much bigger than you could’ve ever imagined.

Tucker: I hope it flourishes. Uh, but, uh, I’ve let go of any attachment to it.

Adam: Right. You’ve reached enlightenment.

[ Ashley sucking on straw ] Was that before or after my father paid the, uh, inflated price for your broken company?

Ashley: [ Sighs ] Bye, adam.

Adam: Have a nice lunch.

Ashley: [ Whispers ] How did you not just punch him in the face?

Tucker: It’s just mesmerizing watching you come to my defense like that. I don’t know if I’m– if I’m just moved or a little bit turned on right now.

Ashley: Really?

Tucker: Mm-hmm.

Ashley: I’m frustrated that the adams and the dianes of the world are actually failing upwards.

Tucker: Right here.

Ashley: What are you doing?

Tucker: You can say whatever you want. I’m starting to believe that you actually care for me.

Ashley: Um…

Sharon: It’s good to see you out and about. Nick said that you’ve been spending a lot of your time alone and you haven’t replied to his texts or calls. He’s worried about you.

Summer: Uh, yeah, I’ve just been trying to conserve my energy for harrison. Trying to keep things as normal as possible for him, which is a challenge.

Sharon: I get wanting to conserve your energy right now. But that doesn’t mean you have to go through this alone. You know, there are plenty of people who love you and understand what you’re going through. The grief, the shock, the pain, the anger, whatever it is that you’re feeling, it’s perfectly normal under these circumstances. Just know there is a community of people here for you every step of the way.

Summer: Yeah. To be honest, sharon, I mean, all the support, it’s actually just making me feel like I need to take care of other people’s feelings about my well-being. And it’s just easier to be alone. So, thank you for the hug and for the coffee. I promise I will answer my dad.

Daniel: Excuse me. Um, sorry, I need to talk to my sister, please?

Sally: Uh, I was hoping to have some more time to think this through, but now it seems I have to make a decision sooner than I thought.

Nick: Well, I’m ready to be a sounding board.

Sally: So, chloe and I got some not-great news. Jill does not want to lock us into a contract. Maybe down the road, but not right now.

Nick: Really? That is surprising. I thought you had a killer pitch and you guys were gonna close that deal today.

Sally: Yeah, I mean, I thought it was gonna happen, too, but jill delivered the bad news before we even had a chance to present our newest plans.

Nick: Okay. Uh, good news delayed.

Sally: Yeah. I mean, it could still happen, but that would mean hoping for a maybe as opposed to betting on a sure thing.

Nick: You can’t knock a sure thing.

Sally: Right. Which is exactly why I’m giving this serious consideration.

Nick: Does this mean you’re ready to take me up on my proposal to invest in your business? Because, sally, I would love to partner with you on this.

Sally: [ Laughs softly ] Um, it’s actually about another opportunity.

Nick: Why are you being cagey?

Sally: Because it would mean working at mccall. For adam.

Sally: I don’t know, adam didn’t go into details. And like I said, I don’t even know how I feel about it. I thought I was gonna have more time to think this through, but that was adam on the phone and he’s eager to get his team in place.

Nick: Yeah, this is clearly his way to insinuate himself back into your life. He saw an opportunity and boom, there you go. I mean, he will do whatever it takes to stay close to you.

Sally: Right. Because it couldn’t possibly be about my skill set you know, I did a pretty great job as C.O.O. And C.E.O. Of newman. So, maybe adam recognizes that?

Nick: That’s why i wanted to invest in you. That’s why I fought so hard for you to stay at newman. Why I went to bat to get you that second meeting with jill, because I believe in your talent. That’s why I advocate for you every day.

Sally: Right. Unless it involves working with adam.

Nick: Look, he just– he always has an agenda. He and my father are alike in that way. You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think my father’s gonna have a hand in everything that goes on there.

Sally: He’s giving adam carte blanche to run it the way that he wants.

Nick: Is that what he told you? Sally, he bought that company so he could get adam back under control. I’m telling you, you’re walking into a minefield. This is my dad and adam trying to exert control over you, and you and your baby don’t need that.

Ashley: Oh, well, hello. Are you gonna try to kick me out of the office, too?

Jack: No, I just came to pick up some work to take home.

Ashley: Of course, because the woman who’s in lockdown must be kept company at all costs.

Jack: Ash, I am too tired to do this with you. Could we just put a pin in this fight over diane and talk to each other? You’re my sister. I care a great deal about you and I– I– I miss you.

Ashley: Okay. Okay. I have a couple of minutes, sure.

Jack: Okay.

Ashley: So, what did you want to discuss?

Jack: I want to talk about us, about this. This tension, I hate it.

Ashley: I don’t like it very much either, jack.

Jack: Look, I know diane is not your favorite person, but are you really this bitter and angry?

Ashley: I am, unfortunately.

Jack: I don’t buy that.

Ashley: Well, do you want to tell me how I’m feeling?

Jack: I think you’re using me and diane as a punching bag to avoid some realities in your own life.

Ashley: Okay. So, what am I avoiding exactly?

Jack: The possibility that you are not as tough and in control of your life as you pretend to be. I think these attacks are defensive. I think it’s about self-preservation. I think you’re trying to avoid feelings that you have for tucker that you know you shouldn’t have.

[ Diane breathing deeply ]

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Tucker: Hi.

[ Diane sighs ] You must miss the jailyard, huh? You want to lift some weights or should we have a knife fight?

[ Diane scoffs ]

Diane: You know what I love most about this house? How spacious it is. Don’t you have somewhere else you could be?

Tucker: I gotta give you credit. You’re back to the old diane, you know? Tenacious nerves of steel. Although, I’m amazed you’re willing to take this chance.

Diane: You know, clearly you’re looking to bother me with this conversation. So, why don’t you go ahead and say what you want to say so I can go back to enjoying some fresh air and sunshine? Hmm? Hey, go ahead. You got my attention.

Daniel: How can you accept all of sharon’s sympathy and kindness? It’s like every second you stood there, it was like another lie.

Summer: Oh, my– why are you being like this?

Daniel: Like what?

Summer: So self-righteous. I hate this as much as you do. Probably even more. But you– you seem to think that there’s one clear answer: Save diane.

Daniel: And you want to send your husband’s mother to prison for a crime she didn’t commit. How is that the solution?

Summer: Oh– that’s not what I want. And I think you know that. But you weren’t there when mom came to me. You didn’t hear directly from her the hell that she’s been going through.

Daniel: That’s one of her own creation.

[ Summer scoffs ]

Summer: That right there. That judgment. Mom was completely terrified and she didn’t come to you ’cause she knew that you wouldn’t look out for her. And I really thought that she was wrong, but clearly, I made a mistake in telling you. I should’ve listened to mom.

Daniel: Don’t you– don’t you dare tell me that I don’t care about what happens to our mother. You know she called me, too? Trelegy for copd.

Daniel: I got a mysterious phone call last night. The person on the other end didn’t speak. But I– I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was mom trying to reach out to me.

Summer: You’re sure that it was her?

Daniel: No, summer. That is the whole point. I mean, it could’ve been a wrong number. It could’ve been a total stranger that I– I’m talking to like it– it’s our dead mother. Or it could’ve been someone we know who’s wondering why I’m talking to our dead mother. I mean, don’t you see that this is driving us both crazy?

Summer: Look, I told you that I just need time. I’m trying to figure this out. I’m trying to learn all the evidence that they have in stark’s murder. And I’m researching what the burden of proof would be for self-defense.

Daniel: Are you gonna get a law degree? Are you gonna become a homicide detective?

Summer: Daniel, I’m struggling here. I’m trying to help our mom and I’m scared for her. God.

Daniel: Listen, the longer we wait, the worse this is gonna be for her and for everyone else. I mean, don’t you see what this is doing to us?

Summer: I hate it, too.

Daniel: [ Scoffs ] You know, meanwhile, I’m wondering if she’s halfway around the world somewhere, living a new life, while she’s reveling in the fact that diane’s being convicted for a murder that she didn’t commit.

Summer: No, mom’s focus is on getting back to us. But she can’t do that if you blow this open. And if you tell kyle and he realizes that I knew, you’re gonna blow up my marriage, too. How can you not see that?

Jack: I think you have real feelings for tucker. I think he has reawakened the flame that the two of you shared together and that makes you feel vulnerable and I know that’s terrifying for you.

Ashley oh, don’t stop. I love that you’re an expert on my feelings. Please keep going.

Jack: I know you longer than anyone on this earth, ashley. Think about this. Every time you told me to stay away from diane, to not get involved again, you used yourself as an example. You were better than I was because you knew not to get involved with tucker. And here we are, he’s now invited into our home.

Ashley: And you did the same thing with diane, jack.

Jack: Diane and I are getting married! This game you’re playing and tucker lives under our roof and stays in a guest room, that’s so you can control him. You keep him at a distance, but you can still influence things.

Ashley: Okay. You know what? I don’t have to listen to this–

Jack: No, wait, listen to me.

Ashley: What?

Jack: Listen, I know what you’re feeling because I felt it myself when I was falling back in love with diane. I didn’t want to get hurt. I didn’t want to trust that the change I saw in her was real. I know what’s happening to you because it happened to me.

Ashley: Okay. If you understand that, then why is it okay for you but not for me?

Jack: Because tucker hasn’t changed. He is the same manipulative operator he has always been.

Ashley: Okay, but diane, who’s actually charged with killing another human being is a brand new woman. Just look at yourself. You’re exhausted. All you do is deal with diane and her issues. She’s turned you into somebody I don’t even know anymore, jack. But you’re making better choices than me. You can take your psych 101 crap and shove it.

Jack: Hey, wait. Your armor’s already up again. You can’t even be vulnerable with me. The way you’re acting, you could never trust tucker, or anybody else for that matter. And you know what? That gives me an advantage over you. I have something you don’t– the ability to open my heart. To let someone in, to trust. Don’t pity me too much. Save some for yourself.

[ Door slamming ]

Tucker: Okay, truth time. Uh, no offense, but I don’t think you have it in you to have killed phyllis.

Diane: Gee, thanks. None taken.

Tucker: But here’s the reality. There’s plenty of proof to convict you. And your past is going to enter that courtroom for sure. Your fake death, the way deacon sharpe helped you frame everyone in town. Everyone you’ve ever crossed is gonna hate you all over again, which is gonna make the proof look even worse.

Diane: Thanks for trying to cheer me up, tucker.

Tucker: I’m trying to help you. This trial will force jack and kyle to live through everything you did to them, all over again. And this time you can add summer and harrison as collateral damage. And how long before this destroys kyle and summer’s marriage? Do you want to be responsible for that? Poor jack. He is going to be crushed when you’re facing life in prison.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] This is the worst pep talk ever.

Tucker: You don’t need a cheerleader, diane. You need a way out of here. I can give you that.

Sally: This baby is exactly who I’m thinking about. She is the only reason why I’m considering adam’s offer. And like I said, I don’t even know what I’m gonna do, but I have a child to support.

Nick: Your baby will be very well taken care of as a newman.

Sally: This baby is a spectra, and making sure that she’s provided for is my sole purpose now. And I’m not just talking about some job. I need to assure that I have a career. That is important to me. It is a part of my identity and I want to be a strong role model for my daughter.

Nick: You will be. Sally, you are, you don’t need a job from adam to prove that.

Sally: Adam and I worked well together. And I am perfectly capable of being able to separate the professional from the personal.

Nick: Well, you may be, but adam isn’T.

Sally: I need something career-wise, and maybe this isn’t it, but maybe it is. I just need the sense of purpose that comes from having a profession. I have had one failure after another and I don’t know, maybe this is the chance for me to get back in the game.

Nick: And that is exactly what adam wants you to think. Sally, you may not want to hear this, but I’m gonna say it anyway. If you go and work for adam, it’ll be one of the biggest mistakes of your life. Are you tired of clean clothes that just don’t smell clean?

Sally: I didn’t ask for your opinion, nick. In fact, I asked you not to rush to judgment.

Nick: I’m not rushing into anything, all right? I speak from years of experience.

Sally: Okay. Well, then maybe I should’ve also added, please don’t insult me by assuming that I can’t read the situation without your insights into how the newman mind works. I’m becoming an expert and it’s not as complicated as you all might think. It’s all about ego and power.

Nick: Do not lump me in with adam and dad. Look, I’m telling you, if you go and work for adam, he’s gonna chip away at every boundary you set until you have nothing.

Sally: I’m not naive to adam’s motivations. Please give me some credit. Look, I have somewhere to be.

Nick: Please don’t go.

Sally: We will talk about this later.

[ Sighing ]

Chance: Everything good?

Daniel: Obviously not, given the circumstances.

Chance: You know, I’ve seen a lot of families pull together after a traumatic loss like this. But I have also seen a lot fall apart. And I really hope that you and summer can find some way to lean on each other.

Daniel: That’s a struggle. Um, so, diane’s out on bail. You know when her trial’s gonna be? It looks like there’s a lot of evidence against her and– think she’ll be convicted?

Chance: Look, I’ll, uh– I’ll be honest with you, man. I don’t think that diane acted alone.

Daniel: So, there are other people of interest? Are there any leads that you’re following that could exonerate diane?

Chance: Look, I can’t make you any promises, but even if we were to find that accomplice, with the case being so strong against diane, I am very confident that there will be justice for your mother’s murder.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Or should I say ashley would like that? And then she might invite you into her bed instead of relegating you to the guest room.

[ Chuckles ]

Tucker: I’m talking about what you want, diane.

[ Diane sighing ] I know how much you care about jack and kyle. You worked so hard to redeem yourself with them, to rebuild your relationship with them, right?

Diane: That’s right.

Tucker: That’s right. I can relate to that.

[ Laughs softly] I admire it, even. I know what you’ve got to lose here. Can you deny what watching you get convicted will do to jack and kyle, the whole family? You really want to put them through that?

Diane: Thank you for your consideration, tucker. This conversation’s over.

Chloe: What is this important offer I had to rush over to discuss? Please tell me, did jill reconsider and I get to go buy all those desk lamps because we scored our first big fish client?

Sally: Unfortunately, no change of heart from jill.

Chloe: Okay. So, what has changed since we last saw each other?

Sally: I was offered a job.

Chloe: What? Where?

Sally: With adam. But before you say anything–

Chloe: Absolutely not. No, no, you are not going to dump our plans just so he can suck you back into a black hole. No way.

Sally: Okay, that’s basically what nick said. But look, this is not just an offer for me, okay? It’s for both of us. Adam made me a blanket offer: Craft the job you want with the people that you want, and that includes my business partner.

Chloe: How did nick not talk you out of this?

Sally: He tried, but it’s not his decision to make.

Chloe: So, he obviously thinks it’s a bad idea. And I couldn’t agree more.

Sally: So, you hate adam so much that you’re ready to ignore an opportunity like this?

Chloe: Yes.

Sally: But we worked with him before.

Chloe: And it was excruciating.

Sally: Okay, look, I-it’s just an option, okay? I– I haven’t agreed to anything.

Chloe: So, if you are willing to consider a job from adam, then will you revisit nick’s offer to invest?

Sally: You know how I feel about that.

Chloe: How could you choose a business partnership with adam over nick? It just doesn’t make sense.

Sally: Okay, stop, okay? I’m tired of everyone thinking that they know better than me about my own life. So I didn’t think I needed swiffer.

Chloe: You’ve obviously got to do whatever’s best for you. But remember what it was like in the early days, working for adam at newman fashion.

Sally: Yeah, but, I mean, that was a lifetime ago, and things were complicated with chelsea then. I mean, that was a dynamic that was never gonna work. And that was before I proved myself as C.O.O. And C.E.O. Of newman.

Chloe: And that was before you got into a love affair with adam that went horribly awry. And now you’re going to be in a lifetime commitment of co-parenting with him. Do you really want the extra complications of working with him, too?

Sally: I mean, of course, I would love something cleaner. But I have to start dealing with the reality that I need to provide for my daughter.

Chloe: So, you’re just going to abandon our plans because jill decided to put things on hold?

Sally: I’m doing my due diligence of talking to you about a prospect for both of us.

Chloe: Okay. Well, then I’m gonna tell you where I stand. I don’t want to work for adam again. I don’t want my income to be dependent on his moods. And when he realizes that he can’t get in between you and nick, I don’t want to find us out the door again.

Sally: You’re right.

Chloe: And?

Sally: I hate that.

[ Objects clattering ]

[ Groans ]

Chloe: All right. Well, you know what? You are right about one thing. This is your life. You know what’s best for yours and I know what’s best for mine. And that is not working for adam again. So, you can do whatever you want. But if you choose to accept this offer…you’ll be accepting it solo. Just– just take a deep breath. Okay? And just really think about what you want. Freedom or to be tied to adam in every way possible?

[ Door slamming ]

Nick: Hey, what the hell are you thinking?

Adam: Uh, that it’s a beautiful day.

Nick: Didn’t waste any time accepting dad’s offer to run mccall, huh?

Adam: Well, it was too good an offer to pass it up. I mean, what’s the problem? I thought you were all for it. It keeps me away from newman.

Nick: Is, uh, running mccall– does it have anything to do with business, or are you just doing it to get sally back into your life?

Adam: Okay. So, this is about sally?

Nick: She told me about your offer, to lure her to mccall. Whatever she wants, as long as she works for you.

Adam: Look, what is your problem, nicholas? Are you that insecure? Is whatever you have with sally that fragile?

Sharon: Things seemed tense over there.

Chance: Yeah. And he wouldn’t really talk about it. Just kept pressing for more details about the case against diane.

Sharon: Are there any new developments?

Chance: No. Even if there were, I don’t think it would help. I mean, phyllis is still gone. And when the guilty party is your mother-in-law… I can’t imagine how stressed summer is.

Sharon: Yeah.

Chance: I feel for her.

Sharon: I know. That’s why I was hoping having daniel here would be a comfort to her, but… I mean, it’s gotta be hard for her to lean on kyle right now.

Chance: Well, from what I just saw, daniel seems to be adding to the stress, not easing it.

[ Door shutting ]

Jack: Hey, I hope you were able to relax a bit, enjoy some peace and quiet.

Diane: Yeah, well it’s kind of hard to do when everything around here reminds me of what I won’t have when I spend the rest of my life in prison.

Jack: Hey, I thought we were gonna not let the stress get to us?

Diane: I’m sorry. I’m sorry, that was uncalled for. I don’t need to create any more friction around here than I already have.

Jack: Hey, talk to me. What happened? What’s going on?

Diane: Tucker. He offered to help me run so that you and kyle don’t have to watch me get convicted for murder.

Jack: This is your home. You are becoming my wife. How dare–

Diane: No, jack, jack. It’s– it’s okay. I’m not even mad at tucker. He’s just being tucker and he was probably just doing it for ashley. What upsets me is that, you know, for a minute there he was– he was making sense. I could very well be convicted. And it’s horrible and it’s unfair, but it’s the reality. And how can I do that to the people that I love?

Jack: Stop talking like that. This is tucker’s doing, making you think like this.

Diane: You know, to be honest, I’m angry at myself for wanting to run, and even angrier that I just am not strong enough to do it. I mean, at this point, there is nothing I can do that’s not going to cause you more heartache. And I hate that. Jack, I should’ve never, ever come back here if all I was going to do is cause you pain. (Vo) no matter what type of severe asthma you have…

Adam: Yes, I offered sally a job. I thought that we were on the same page about what’s doing best for her and the baby.

Nick: Well, working for you isn’t it, adam. She doesn’t need your handout.

Adam: It’s not out of pity. She’s damn good. Okay, she’ll be doing me a favor by joining mccall.

Nick: Oh, come on. That is not what this is about.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Well, apparently, she has run to you to discuss the offer.

Nick: Yes, because we are in a relationship.

Adam: And what, she cares more about your feelings than she does her own feelings?

Nick: She wanted to know what my opinion is about the two of you working together. I’m guessing I don’t need to tell you what I think of the idea.

Adam: Why she puts any faith in you is beyond me. The two of you aren’t married, you’re not even engaged. What can you even offer her, nicholas?

Nick: You don’t need a ring to provide stability and commitment.

Adam: Your track record as a long-term partner is pretty lousy. And now you’re acting like you’re in this for the long haul.

Nick: It’s not an act.

Adam: Why? Because you like her? Nicholas, once that’s over, then what? Because I can say with complete certainty that I will always be there for sally.I loveer. Can you say the same?

[ Sighing ]

[ Sighing deeply ]

Sally: What are we gonna do?

Jack: Listen to me. I don’t ever want to hear you say you should never have come back here. You are the victim here. Of jeremy stark, of circumstancesbeyond your control. And you are not the cause of my pain or kyle’S.

Diane: But my situation is.

Jack: So we work on fixing your situation. There’s gotta be some way to figure out how stark pulled this off.

Diane: How? How, now that he’s dead?

Jack: Michael is working on it, trying to find proof that he framed you for phyllis’s murder. Look, he’s got people looking at the security camera footage, phone records. We are going to find some answers.

Diane: And whoever killed jeremy might have those answers.

Jack: Absolutely. We’re going to pursue that as well. We will find our way out of this.

Diane: You’re right. I haven’t given up hope. It was just a momentary lapse.

Jack: I promise you. This is far from being over.

Diane: I am not running. I am going to stay here and fight these charges and not because of this ankle monitor. But because of you and kyle.

Jack: Come here.

Diane: Aw. But one thing tucker made me see clearly, I– I have got to find a way to make this less agonizing for summer, because kyle loves her so much. I let jeremy do so much damage to this family and their relationship cannot be part of that.

Daniel: Jack, can we meet? There’s something you need to hear.

Nikki: Well, hello. I’m glad to see you here.

Victoria: You’re not surprised to see me back in genoa city?

Nikki: No. I saw nate last night at neil’s tribute, so I figured you were back, too. But he didn’t tell me why you had to cut your trip to la short.

Victoria: Uh, well, we accomplished our goal, so, uh, we decided to head on back.

Nikki: What happened to the idea of you extending your trip there for a working holiday?

Victoria: Our plans changed.

Audra: Oh, I’ll have my usual. Hey. You’re already back from la. Did you find nate and victoria hard at work?

Elena: They were hard at something, but it wasn’t work.

Audra: Ugh. I almost hate to ask.

Elena: You should have seen them. They were so casually intimate, even in a public restaurant. And their body language gave away everything that was going on between them.

Audra: Oh, my god.

Elena: At least nate had the decency not to deny what was going on. He didn’t even try to. He just admitted it flat out.

Audra: Elena, I am so sorry that you’re going through this. I’m not sure I could have been as strong or as brave as you. But what are you gonna do? What happens now?

Chelsea: So, you’ve noticed it, too?

Adam: It’s impossible not to. I mean, ever since we told connor about sally’s baby.

Chelsea: He’s been so moody and sullen. I’ve been trying to pull him out of it, but– I mean, I don’t understand. So, he’s okay having a big brother, but he’s not okay now having a younger sister?

Adam: Yeah. He and johnny were already solid as cousins, but they’ve really bonded as brothers. The only thing that I can imagine is the news about the baby was just one change too many.

Chelsea: Yeah.

Sally: You spent the night.

Nick: I mean, how could I leave? You pretty much demanded I activate my legendary spooning skills.

Sally: Well, you definitely have considerable talent in that area. Where are you off to now? Going home to see christian?

Nick: Yeah, I’m just gonna run home and change and make sure he gets off to school.

Sally: Do you have time to stay here and have breakfast in bed with me? It’s my treat.

Nick: Sounds amazing, but, uh…

Sally: But what?

Nick: I have some pressing matters I need to handle.

Sally: Something tells me I know exactly where you’re headed. You’re off to fight with your father, aren’t you?

Nick: I like it. And speaking from experience, those clunky chairs, sitting in them all day can really mess up your back. I’m sure you’re gonna find the perfect person. I have absolute faith in you.

Sally: Nicely done, nick. You have diverted my attention. But I’m sorry, I’m not buying it. Are you sure you’re okay with putting what victor did behind us?

Nick: I’m good. I mean it. So, just because I’m not sticking around for breakfast, it doesn’t give you permission to skip it. Okay? I want you to call up some food and then promise me you’re gonna take your vitamins.

Sally: I promise.

Nick: That’s my girl. Maybe just one more.

Sally: Mm-hmm.

Nick: Bye.

Sally: Bye. [ Sighs ]

[ Door opens, closes ] Well, you heard the man. Let’s get to work. Oh…

Adam: Let’s check back in about connor later.

Chelsea: Of course. And adam–

Adam: Yeah.

Chelsea: You got a lot of time before the baby’s born. Connor will come to terms with being a big brother. It’s just been years of endless change for him and I think he’s hit his limit. But once he meets his baby sister, he will adjust.

Adam: I really wanna believe that. Billy.

Billy: Good morning. Hi. Look at you.

Chelsea: Hi. What about me?

Billy: Well, you’re smiling and seeing you smile makes me very happy.

Chelsea: Oh, well, that’s a very sweet thing to say.

Billy: And, you know, adam was surprisingly civil, so maybe things are coming up roses. How’s everything with connor? Is that getting any better? Is he still giving you the silent treatment?

Chelsea: Well, he goes from being sullen and moody to quiet and withdrawn. I don’t know what to do. I try giving him space. I try telling him I’m here if he wants to talk. I just think I need to come up with the perfect combination of what to say and how to say it in order for him to open up to me. I mean, adam’s trying, too. Billy, nothing’s working.

Billy: Well, I know you know this, but part of it is just his age.

Chelsea: I just wanna fix this for him and I don’t know how to do it.

Billy: Well, here’s the thing about what you went through, okay? You showed him that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it and to talk about your feelings, okay? So, don’t blame yourself for connor’s normal, if painful reaction to finding out he’s having a new sibling. He’s a bright kid and he trusts you.

Chelsea: Yeah. He’s just already been through so much in his short life. You know, even navigating the stuff between adam and me.

Billy: Well, you know what, that’s– that’s always a difficult situation for parents and for kids. And he’s not even a teenager yet. Okay? Wait ’til he crashes that party. He’s gonna want even more distance from you. Hopefully he’s not starting early.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] I just wanna hold him. Tell him everything’s gonna be okay. [ Sighs ] But he won’t let me.

Nikki: So, what’s going on? You’re not yourself today.

Victoria: Oh, no. I’m fine. I’m fine. It’s just the travel.

Nikki: Mm-hmm. But you got back last night. So, why didn’t you go with nate to neil’s tribute?

Victoria: Because devon didn’t invite me. I assume that he’s still angry that I went after chancellor-winters.

Nikki: But I don’t think that’s what’s really bothering you. Something else is going on and it’s not jet lag. Did something happen? Victoria?

Victoria: Okay. Fine. Yes, something did happen.

Nikki: Business or personal?

Victoria: It started off as business, but my relationship with nate became much more personal.

Sally: Okay. So, great news. I think I found some really great candidates for our ergonomics expert and I thought maybe we could meet with them before presenting a choice to jill.

Chloe: Okay, perfect. And I’ve connected with a marketing and social media web guru who can get our new business on the map.

Sally: Look at us, firing on all cylinders.

Chloe: Until jill kills our deal.

Sally: That’s the sunny optimism we need.

Chloe: Well, she’s done it before.

Sally: Not this time. Okay? I’m sure that jill is on our side.

[ Phone ringing ]

Chloe: Is that her? Is it jill?

Sally: Jill, hi. We were just about to call you. You are going to love our latest ideas for your chicago offices and we actually have some staffing suggestions that–

Chloe: Oh… sometimes, the lows of bipolar depression

Elena: It is over. I told nate he could go straight to hell.

Audra: Uh, wow. How are you doing?

Elena: Well, I was beyond furious when I left la, but now I guess I am just numb.

Audra: Do you think you might forgive nate for his transgression?

Elena: [ Chuckles ] No. There is no going back for us. I couldn’t even sleep in our bed last night.

Audra: Mm.

Elena: I packed a suitcase, left my key, and I walked away.

Audra: You know, when you love someone, um, as much as you seem to love nate, you don’t just get over it and forget all the pain.

Elena: Even after I left, I couldn’t sleep. I just kept thinking about why I put so much energy into that relationship. And then it finally occurred to me that it was because of what we did to devon. I guess I felt like… if my relationship with nate wasn’t real and lasting, then I hurt devon for nothing.

Audra: No, I’m sure it wasn’t just for nothing.

Elena: I put everything I had into that relationship. I bent over backwards making excuses for nate. I held on to hope that he would somehow revert back into the man that I fell in love with. But I am done trying to save nate from himself. And I know that none of this is my fault. It’s all on him. And I’ve been disappointed with him since the day that he started working at chancellor-winters. But now… I’m just disgusted. So, victoria can have him. In fact, they deserve each other.

Nikki: So, when you say something more than business, am I to assume that you–

Victoria: Yes, mom, you can assume.

Nikki: Well, I’m very surprised to hear that because I thought nate and elena were still together.

Victoria: They were. Until she surprised us both and showed up at the hotel in los angeles. Apparently, she sensed that something was going on, so nate confessed.

Nikki: So, this has been going on for a while?

Victoria: Yes. This mutual attraction that we share has been building for some time. And you’re right, we have acted on it before this trip to los angeles.

Nikki: You know, I see so much of your father in you. You’re taking the same tone he would have, almost daring anybody who questions his decisions.

Victoria: And dad would be right in that regard. This is my life. I know what I feel. And nate and I, we tried very hard to keep things professional, but we can’t deny this connection that we have. And I’m sorry I can’t control what people think about that.

Nikki: Okay. All right. That’s fine. You feel the way you feel. But exactly what is this undeniable connection the two of you share? And have you taken a moment to consider how that might impact the company?

Nick: Morning, guys.

Billy: Hey.

Nick: Morning, dad.

Victor: Hey, son.

Nick: Just can’t help yourself, can you?

Victor: What are you talking about?

Nick: You keep interfering in sally’s life, but this time you’ve gone too far.

Victor: Really?

Nick: Now you don’t just wanna banish her from the family or genoa city, now you wanna take her baby away from her.

Sally: Thanks, jill.

Chloe: What did she say? Was it as bad as it sounded? Have we been fired before we’ve even been hired?

Sally: So, even though jill is still very intrigued by our pitch, she wants to wait. Just chancellor-winters has decided not to take on any large scale commercial projects for the foreseeable future. So, good news is it’s not a no, just a not right now.

Chloe: Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t order those 5,000 new desk lamps.

[ Sally scoffs ] So, now what?

[ Scoffs ] What, are we supposed to just sit around and wait? Or are we supposed to look elsewhere?

Sally: I don’t know. We’ve been so focused on the potential of this massive job that we haven’t even tried to pursue any other clients. I just was really counting on catching the big fish and using it as bait to open countless more doors for us.

Chloe: And without it, we have no portfolio and no track record to tout.

Sally: Yeah, unfortunately, we are back at square one.

[ Chloe sighs ]

Adam: What’s going on?

Chloe: Um, okay, well, I guess I should get going. Um, you know, I have to actually pick up some snacks for miles’ class party anyway. Just, we’ll talk tomorrow. Okay? And I don’t want you to stress anymore over this, because we are going to come back stronger and better than ever. How’s that for phony optimism?

[ Adam clearing throat ]

Adam: How bad is it?

Sally: Well, it appears that I won’t have any income coming in anytime soon. The design job that chloe and I were hoping to score has been postponed indefinitely.

Adam: I am sorry to hear that. Man, that’s bad timing. You would’ve done great in the job.

Sally: Yeah, I have a feeling we absolutely would’ve killed it. But unfortunately, chloe and i put all of our eggs in one basket. But at least I still have some savings to rely on, so…

Adam: Okay. I’m not liking the sound of that. Once you dip into that, it’s gone forever. I– I have another idea.

Sally: Okay. Please tell me you’re not talking about the trust for our daughter, because there’s absolutely no way that I’m gonna accept that for myself.

Adam: No, no. No, you’re misunderstanding me completely. I’m not offering you cash. I’m offering you a job, working for me. Good checkup?

[ Nick sighs ]

Chelsea: I wonder what that’s about.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] It’s victor being victor, you know? Spreading joy and sunshine everywhere he goes. Whatever it is, I think it’s best that we stay far away from that.

Chelsea: Oh, I agree, wholeheartedly. The last thing I need is victor using any of his classic victor newman moves to try to handle any of my son’s issues.

Billy: That’s a very good point. You know what? I think I might have a potential solution of my own on that matter. What about a– a classic distraction for the young man?

Chelsea: Like what?

Billy: Why don’t we plan another get-together for johnny and connor? You know, our boys always have a good time together. They happen to cheer each other up, which is always good. And it could be a fantastic reminder for connor that having a sibling– not all that bad.

Chelsea: I love that idea. Anything to get connor out of this funk.

Billy: Yeah.

Chelsea: Hey!

Chloe: Hey.

Chelsea: Uh-oh. I know that look. What’s wrong?

Chloe: Oh, a big fat disappointing setback.

Chelsea: What happened?

Chloe: Um, jill’s not moving forward with our project. And we were on such a roll. We were this close to signing a deal.

Billy: I’m sorry to hear that. Do you, uh– do you want me to put in a good word with my mother?

Chloe: Um, would that work? Does she ever listen to you?

Billy: First time for everything.

Chloe: [ Laughs ] Thanks, but no. I’m just, you know, gonna try to look on the bright side. I mean, it’s really hard to do considering the circumstances. I mean, you just think you’re gonna take over the world and everything just goes, “pfffft.”

Chelsea: I know what you need. A girl’s night. It’s been too long.

Chloe: [ Laughs ] No, what we need is a girls’ two week vacation–

Chelsea: Ah.

Chloe: But, um, yeah, I’ll settle for a night out.

Chelsea: Yeah, you’re right. If I don’t leave now, I’m gonna be late for therapy. I’m not letting you skate on a girl’s night. And as for you, I’ll call you later.

Billy: Sounds good.

Chelsea: Bye.

Chloe: Bye.

[ Footsteps receding ]

Chloe: Well, well, well. Look at you, mr. Responsibility. You’ve really stepped up.

Victor: So, that’s how sally spectra described our meeting? That I was ready to kidnap her child that hasn’t even been born yet? That’s a gross misinterpretation of what I intended.

Nick: We both know that’s not the case.

Victor: Do I have to remind you that we are the newmans? Do you know how many people over the past have tried to take advantage of us, and still do? That’s what I’m vigilant against.

Nick: She’s having a baby. That is your defense?

Victor: I will not be taken advantage of.

Nick: Okay, so, you’re trying to pay off the mother of your granddaughter. That is an overreaction. But thankfully, sally told you she is not for sale.

Victor: Huh? Has it occurred to you that by turning me down, she was simply angling for, you know, something more substantial? Upping the ante, as it were?

Nick: This is not a negotiation.

Victor: Everything is negotiable, son.

Nick: It’s not, dad. Not this. See, I know you would never try and take away a baby from its mother.

Victor: From the wrong mother, I damn well would.

Nick: No, you wouldn’T. It goes against everything that you stand for. This is one of your tests. But see, sally doesn’t know that. She thinks it’s a legitimate offer, but she turned you down. She passed your test. Leave her and the baby alone.

Sally: How am I supposed to work for you when you don’t even work anywhere yourself?

Adam: [ Scoffs ] I’m talking about mccall. It’s the most appealing offer on the table for me right now. And if it comes with the added benefit of providing you with gainful employment, what’s stopping you from taking me up on my offer?

Sally: Wait, hold on. An offer? So– so, you haven’t even accepted, but suddenly you would if it meant handing me a job?

Adam: Okay. Yeah. It wouldn’t all be for you. I’ve been leaning in this direction for quite a while now. I’ve been giving it some serious consideration ever since my dad mentioned it. I mean, I think it’s perfect, especially since I’ve been itching for a new challenge.

Sally: Don’t you think you’re getting a little ahead of yourself? Because knowing victor, the second you say you’re in, he’s probably gonna change his mind.

Adam: Okay, it’s– fair assessment, but not this time. And I know how companies like mccall work. There’s plenty of positions that you could fill. You could even be my coo again. Or how about a in-house design firm for any and all projects?

Sally: Adam–

Adam: Look, I know. Hey, how about this. You could name your own position. You could even bring chloe along.

Sally: Okay. Look, just– just slow down. Okay? This is way too much, too fast. I just need you to just take a second and think this through.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Okay? Because for one thing, victor would lose it if you brought me in. And if he really is the money behind the acquisition, there’s absolutely no way he’s gonna want me anywhere near his new company.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Or his sons. He just got done pushing me to take a job far away from genoa city.

Adam: Wait, wait. My father did what?

Sally: He offered to set me up anywhere in the world, but not here. As long as I left the baby with him. But he assured me that she was gonna be taken care of under his watchful eye. Okay everyone, our mission is complete balanced nutrition.

Adam: That’s why victor called you and he wanted to see you. I knew I should’ve gone with you.

Sally: Trust me, I handled it just fine on my own.

Adam: I do trust you. It’s him that I have a problem with.

Sally: Okay. Just please do me a favor, okay? Don’t go fanning the flames by confronting victor. The last thing that we need right now is to wave a red flag in front of the bull. Okay? I just had to talk nick out of doing the exact same thing.

Adam: Oh, and he listened? I’m surprised.

Sally: Yeah, me, too. But I wouldn’t have had to talk nick off the walls if you hadn’t tipped him off to victor’s summons.

Adam: Oh, come on. Give me a little credit for how I handled things with my brother. We actually found some common ground. Protecting you and the baby is at the top of both our priority lists.

Sally: I appreciate the impulse, but not the action. Look, I faced stuff like this my entire life, okay? And I’m not gonna pretend like it still doesn’t sting, but I don’t need protection from it.

Adam: Well, you shouldn’t have to. You should be resting right now and getting ready to have–

Sally: I’m not a damsel in distress, okay? You don’t have to save me. I’ve always fought my own battles.

Adam: Right. But now you’re not just fighting for yourself.

Audra: I hate seeing you like this.

Elena: Well, I appreciate your support. And I have a lot of big decisions to make. But I guess I should start heading to work.

Audra: Uh, and which job is that? Just asking.

Elena: The hospital. I have to make up a shift that I traded so that I could go to la. And I know why you asked. And no, I don’t know what’s gonna happen with my podcast at newman yet.

Audra: I mean, I can’t imagine it’ll be easy working for a company run by nate and victoria.

Elena: Yeah, you think?

Audra: Look, but then again, I don’t think you should turn your back on something you enjoy, especially when you’re so good at it. You should walk in there with your head held high and knock ’em dead. Yeah. Maybe follow up on that interview with J.T. Try and convince him to– to come in person. That would be a real slap in the face to victoria.

Victoria: Mom, please don’t be so worried. I am still on top of my game and nate is as well. I mean, how could the business suffer? I– I’m not gonna let anything interfere with newman continuing to flourish.

Nikki: You are entering into a personal relationship with a man who is fully ensconced in our business. I just worry about you being involved in something like that.

Victoria: Involved. Involved in what? Nate is a brilliant– and he’s– he’s a charming man.

Nikki: I’m not denying that. I’m just saying it sounds like your relationship is getting off on a bad footing.

Victoria: Mom, are you worried that I’m gonna get hurt? Don’t worry. I assure you, I’m fine.

Nikki: Okay, that’s fine. I just hope those don’t become famous last words.

[ Knock on door ]

Nikki: Hi.

Nick: Hey.

Victoria: Nick, what’s wrong?

Nick: Oh, dad, uh, you know, he tried to dust off one of his old shady moves from the victor newman playbook.

Nikki: What has he done?

Nick: Tried to pay off sally.

[ Chuckles dryly ] He has completely ignored all of my warnings to steer clear of her.

Nikki: [ Exhales ] And I was just reminding your sister how your father plays by his own rules and doesn’t give a damn how it affects anybody else.

Victoria: Uh, yeah. And of course, I was shocked by those revelations.

Nikki: Okay. If you two will excuse me, I will give you some privacy so you can complain about your parents. Nicholas, can you come see me later?

Nick: Of course, mom.

[ Footsteps receding ]

[ Door shutting ] What’d I just walk in on?

Victoria: Just so you know, you don’t have to protect my privacy in regards to nate anymore.

Nick: Mom knows?

Victoria: Not just mom. Elena.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Elena knows?

Victoria: I’m not sure what happened, but I get the feeling from nate that things are probably over between them now.

Nick: Well, you say it like that, like it’s no big deal. How is that? Is it because you got what you wanted and nothing else matters? I used to wait to run my dishwasher

Sally: I get it. I’m fighting for two. But I still don’t need your help, adam, even if I’m going up against your father.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Okay. I understand the instinct. I will try not to step in where I am not welcome.

Sally: Thank you. I appreciate you restraining yourself.

Adam: But that– that’s not gonna stop me from trying to lure you to mccall. I would still like to work with you. I think that you would be happy with this position. I can guarantee good pay and exceptional maternity leave. Not to mention onsite daycare, maybe.

Sally: Guarantee, huh?

Adam: Mm-hmm. And a boss who fully respects you, and your brilliant ideas.

Sally: Stop trying to fix my problems.

Adam: I’m not. Mccall unlimited is a wreck and it’s gonna take a lot of help to get it back on track. And the only way for me to do that is to assemble the tightest, strongest team possible. You are what I’m looking for, sally. So, my offer stands.

[ Sighs ]

Billy: What makes you think that I’m stepping up? Why would you say that?

Chloe: It’s obvious how strong the bond between you and chelsea has become. Not only from what she’s told me, but from what I’ve witnessed firsthand. I mean, there’s definitely something going on here.

[ Billy clears throat ]

Billy: Let me just be perfectly clear. Okay? I genuinely care about chelsea. The feelings that I have, they’re not out of obligation and I’m not trying to play hero. So, I appreciate it, but I don’t need a pat on the back for that.

Chloe: I know that. ‘Cause I know you. You can change and adapt to this situation at hand. You changed a lot after delia died. And you’ve changed even more because of chelsea. She really needs someone, someone that she can count on, especially now. And as shocking as it is, you might be the one.

Victor: Well, you’re gonna have to wait for the press release to find out about the details. All right.

Adam: Dad?

Victor: Hello, son.

Adam: I think we have some unfinished business to discuss.

Victor: Yeah, I guess we do. So, um, my newly acquired company needs a new ceo.

Adam: And I am just the man for the job,

Victor: Ah.

Adam: But only on my terms.

Victor: Oh, I see. Huh. Let’s hear them.

Adam: I will accept the ceo position only if you agree to back off. Now, I know you have vast knowledge and experience, and I know you can be very valuable with helping me to achieve my goals. So, I will consult with you as needed, but only when it comes to the company. My daughter is off limits. Sally is off limits. That means there will be no offering her bribes, no browbeating her, and there will be no attempts to take her baby away from her.

[ Victor chuckles ]

Victor: So, sally spectra came running to both my sons in an attempt to turn them against their father, right?

Adam: You don’t know sally at all.

Victor: Mm.

Adam: I know this was one of your tests, and she didn’t take your offer, so she clearly passed. Now leave sally alone.

Victor: Your brother said the same thing, by the way.

Adam: I have stated my terms. Do you agree or not?

Victor: You know, son… I’m not someone who has terms dictated to him. But since you’re my son, I shall accept them, and I shall hang around until you need my advice. Because trust me, the time will come when you will need my advice. Meanwhile…

Nick: How can you not be a little affected breaking up a happy couple like nate and elena?

Victoria: Oh, god. What makes you so sure that they were all that happy in the first place?

Nick: It’s not the point.

Victoria: Fine, you’re right. I take no pleasure in elena’s pain.

Nick: Then why’d you do it? I warned you, going on this trip with nate was a mistake. You must have known how risky it was gonna be, but it’s almost like you got exactly what you wanted.

Victoria: You know…

[ Laughs ] I’m really not up for a lecture from you right now. Besides, think of how many times you told me to stay out of your relationship with sally. This is my life. It’s my decision. So, back off. Okay?

Nick: Sure. But you’re forgetting one important difference between the two situations.

Victoria: And what is that?

Nick: Well, sally, thanks to you, is no longer a part of newman enterprises. Nate, on the other hand, also thanks to you, is a very big part of it. Vic, I’m the coo of this company. That makes it my business. I trust the guy even less than I did before. If he’s not gonna be loyal to the woman he lives with or to his own family, what makes you think he’s gonna be loyal to you or to this company?

Victor: Well, son, now that we’ve decided that you will be the new ceo of my newly acquired company, let me ask you, how do you intend to proceed at mccall?

Adam: Well, that’s not really your business, is it? I have everything well in hand, including the announcement of my new position. I wrote it last night, so it’ll be out later today.

Victor: I’ll be damned. Really?

Adam: And I’m glad that you are exhibiting such great faith in me, because I’ve already made another major decision. I’ve offered sally a job of her choosing.

Victor: Huh? You think you should do that?

Adam: Well, as we agreed, I will not be dictated to, and this is non-negotiable. I will not allow you to override me on this. I expect you to stand back and let me staff up this company as I see fit.

Victor: But why her?

Adam: Doesn’t matter. Sally comes to work for mccall or you can find yourself another ceo.

Victoria: We’re focused strictly on work for now. I can only imagine how conflicted you must be, and I just want you to take time before you figure out what comes next.

Elena: So, this is what traveling on a business trip alone looks like? Looks like it’s been very productive.

Sharon: Refill?

Nate: Sure. Um, thanks, sharon.

Sharon: Wasn’t that a beautiful celebration of neil’s life tonight? Just all the memories, the people gathering to honor him, and devon’s mother made an appearance. That was a nice surprise.

Nate: Yeah.

Sharon: Okay. What’s wrong?

[ Elena sniffles ]

Nate: I wanna get back to what we had. Everything was so right. But we both have to be willing to try.

Elena: I came here to congratulate and support you. And I know I have to let go of my suspicions about your motives. And I want to believe that you’re back on the right path.

Nate: I am. If you give me the opportunity, I’ll show you. Let me prove to you I am still the man you fell in love with. Stop worrying. Okay? You will never lose me. I love you. Yes, I lost my way for a little while there. But now I am here, okay? The man you love is back. And yes, I’ve been working hard, but I’ve been doing that for us, for our future, together.

[ Inhales sharply ]

Diane: I wish we could stay like this forever. Just wrapped in each other’s arms. Not worrying about what the next day might bring.

Ashley: Oh, my god. What are you doing here?

Kyle: Summer, it’s me. Uh, call or text me back. The way you ran off, it’s got me worried.

Mariah: Hey, stranger.

Kyle: Hi.

Mariah: Hi, I’m– I’m just here picking up takeout. But do you want to get a drink with me while I wait?

Summer: Oh, don’t do that condescending big brother thing to me because it’s not like you have all this wisdom. You blew up your own family, remember? So, what makes you think that you can make the smart, sensible choice in all of this–

Daniel: You’re right, summer. You’re right. I blew up my own family. You know why? ‘Cause I was so damn busy worried about my own pain that I forgot to put heather and lucy first. But you know what, I fixed it and I learned from it.

Daniel: You really sound like mom, you know that? You really do. Let me ask you something. What’s it like when kyle holds you in his arms and he’s trying to comfort you because he thinks that you’re grieving and he loves you.

Summer: Don’t do that.

Daniel: No, no, no, no. And what’s it like knowing how upset he is about his mother? His mother that he just started to rebuild a relationship with. How can you look him in the eyes knowing that you could take all that pain away? But instead, you just keep choosing to lie to him.

Kyle: There is some good news. My mom got out on bail today.

Mariah: That is amazing. So, why don’t you look happier? And why are you here instead of with diane?

Kyle: Well, summer walked in the front door, saw her, there was a confrontation, and she couldn’t get out of the house fast enough. I’ve been looking everywhere for her.

Mariah: Ah. Uh, well, I gotta say, I think that I’m team summer on this one. It’s gotta be hard living under the same roof as the person who was accused of killing your mom. Not that I think diane did it.

Kyle: No, my mom is innocent. Summer just can’t see it. Even worse, I swear that when she looks at me, she doesn’t see her husband, she sees the son of her mother’s killer.

Mariah: As sure as you are of your mother’s innocence, you have to understand that summer sees it differently. Her mom was killed. She is grieving and she’s angry and she has to have a place to put all of this blame. And who better than the person that all of the evidence points to?

Kyle: No, I– I get why summer feels the way she does. But I don’t know how much longer I can stand having my wife believe I am defending a murderer. Just the idea that she thinks that of me, it hurts like hell.

Ashley: How the hell did you get out of jail?

Jack: Calm down, okay?

Ashley: What’d you do, jack? Did you dig a tunnel? Did you blow a hole in the wall?

Jack: Don’t be ridiculous, you knew this was a possibility.

Ashley: Well, she’s already got you committing grand larceny. What’s a little jailbreak? Right?

Diane: Well, that’s wonderful. You know, it’s just great knowing that ashley has the same big, warm heart that her brother does.

Ashley: So, how’d you do it, jack? How did you manage to get this homicidal flight-risk fiancée of yours out of jail? – “Best thing I’ve ever done.”

Jack: Luckily for us, michael was able to get us another judge.

Ashley: Uh-huh.

Jack: One that leaned toward fairness.

Ashley: Fairness? Or bribery? Because I can’t imagine any judge letting her go. I mean, you’ve gone on the run before.

Diane: Why would I want to leave my home, when I have everything I could possibly want right here?

Ashley: You had everything you could want before and you still walked away.

Jack: That was a completely different situation and you know damn well.

Ashley: So, what if she gets bored and she wants to leave again? It won’t be just kyle who’s left with a broken heart. It’ll be you left holding the bag for a, what, seven-figure bail payment? Not to mention the fortune you’re spending on her defense.

Jack: Enough, ashley.

Ashley: You’re so quiet, diane. What’s up with that?

Diane: [ Sighs ] Ashley, I know you hate me, but we need to figure this out if we’re going to be under the same roof.

Ashley: You are both so disgusting and incredibly selfish. Can you imagine what damage you’re doing to poor summer? You’re forcing her to live with the woman who’s charged with murdering her mother. Have you no shame? [ Sighs ]

Mariah: I can’t imagine how hard this is for you and summer. But I know how much you love each other.

Kyle: What if love isn’t enough?

Mariah: You’re gonna find a way, you know, with– with patience and faith.

Kyle: No, patience isn’t an option. I’m losing summer a little bit more each day and talking isn’t enough. I have to find proof that my mother is innocent. That is the only way I will get summer back. Even if I have to find the evidence myself, there is no way in hell I’m losing my wife.

Mariah: I wish there was something I could do to help.

Kyle: You already have. By listening. Being a good friend.

Mariah: You know, earlier when I said that I was team summer, the truth is, I’m just team love. So, I hope you find her and I hope you find the proof that you need to clear your mom.

Kyle: So do I.

Summer: That isn’t fair.

[ Sighs ] I love kyle. I wouldn’t hurt him.

Daniel: You’re lying to him.

Summer: Only until we can help mom.

Daniel: [ Scoffs ] While we’re waiting to help mom, his mom is rotting in a jail cell for something that she didn’t do.

Summer: Diane’s out.

Daniel: How? How is that possible?

Summer: I don’t know. Uh, michael did some sort of lawyer move, I guess. And she’s home. So, see? Diane’s okay.

Daniel: Yeah, but she’s still charged with murder.

Summer: For now. Only until we come up with a plan.

[ Daniel sighs ] Daniel, mom’s alive. We get a second chance at this. Please just help me find a way to bring her home that doesn’t put her behind bars. Because that’s what’s gonna happen if you come forward now. That’s– that’s what’s gonna happen. Look, I hate lying to the people that I love, too, just as much as you do. But this? This is the only thing standing between mom and a prison sentence.

Daniel: And you’re okay with it? Even at the risk of losing your marriage?

Summer: There’s gotta be a way to protect everybody, including mom. And I know if we just have some time, we’ll be able to find a way.

Daniel: No, summer. Kyle deserves to know the truth. Mom is alive and diane is innocent.

Sharon: I saw you speaking with devon and lily earlier tonight. That must have been encouraging.

Nate: In some ways it was. You know, for the first time in months I felt like I might have a real shot at reconciling with my family.

Sharon: But?

Nate: The tension. It’s still there. And maybe it always will be. It’s a reminder that success sometimes comes at a cost. But I won’t apologize for being ambitious. I just didn’t realize how much I’d– I have to give up. Especially recently.

Sharon: I’m well acquainted with the difficulties of working at newman. Victoria puts in 110% and she expects everyone else at the company to do the same. And it makes it hard to find balance.

Nate: It’s more than the work itself. I haven’t managed my priorities as well as I should have. And I’ve made some real mistakes. And now my personal life is suffering as a consequence.

Sharon: You came to the party alone tonight. Um, is everything okay with elena?

Mariah: Thank you so much.

Mariah: Seemed to. No punches were thrown. I’m surprised nate didn’t tell you about it.

Elena: Yeah. We’re not really on speaking terms right now.

Elena: You know, nate and his lies. I got played. I just really wanted to believe that nate was still the man that I loved.

Mariah: I’m so sorry.

Elena: One day he’s trying to take me on a romantic getaway. And the next, I learn that he’s just manipulating me. Trying to keep me quiet. Well, I’m done being quiet.

Kyle: [ Sighs ] There you are.

Summer: Did you talk to daniel?

Kyle: Daniel? I haven’t heard from him.

[ Summer sighs ] I take it you have. Is that the text you got when you flew out of the house?

Summer: How’d you find me?

Kyle: Looked all over town. And I’m beginning to realize this is one of your favorite spots.

Summer: You didn’t have to go searching for me.

Kyle: Oh, but I did. You see, I… am crazy in love with you. So, I can’t help but worry when you take off.

Summer: I didn’t mean to worry you. I just… ooh, I had to get out of that house.

Kyle: The way you keep running away scares me.

Kyle: What I said earlier… there’s nothing you can’t tell me. You understand that, right? I know you want your space to grieve on your own terms. Summer: It’s just… seeing diane at home like that, out on bail, it’s just– it was the last thing I expected.

Kyle: I wanted to give you a heads-up about that.

Summer: I saw how happy you were that she’s free. I’m happy for you. But I can’t– I can’T…

Kyle: Hey, hey, hey, hey. You’re upset mom’s back in the house. I get that. But I swear we will find a way through it.

Summer: What if that isn’t possible? She found it.

Elena: Oh, believe it. And the part that kills me is that we worked so hard to get through things after he screwed over devon and lily at chancellor-winters. And I was the idiot who believed him when he said he wanted to change. That he wanted to be the compassionate man that I fell in love with.

Mariah: Maybe this is just a phase.

Elena: I don’t think so. I think this is who nate is now. And I just have to accept it.

Mariah: Are you really ready to do that?

Elena: I don’t think there’s any coming back from this. Nate made a decision and now I have to make mine.

Nate: You’re really good at this therapist gig. Spotted my issue right away.

Sharon: Well, you were out tonight without the woman you love by your side. And now you’re here alone with nothing but a sad face and a cup of coffee to keep you company. So, it doesn’t take a professional to put those thoughts together. I’m sorry you’re going through a rough patch.

Nate: It’s more than a rough patch, and it’s all on me.

Nate: I’ve changed a lot since elena and I met.

Sharon: Well, I imagine losing your ability to perform surgery had something to do with that.

Nate: It does. I struggled to– to redefine myself. To find work I could be passionate about. Now, I found that passion and business. It’s created… issues in our relationship.

Sharon: Makes sense. You and elena bonded over your shared careers in medicine, now you’ve lost that common ground.

Nate: And it seems we’ve been moving in different directions ever since.

Nate: I never resented elena. I love her too much. But, um, I hurt her, very deeply, and I feel terrible about it.

Kyle: Look, summer, if it’s too hard for you to be at the house, I understand. We don’t have to be, we can go on a trip. It might be good for us all. Look, any place you want to. Back to milan. You love costa rica, and so did harrison. Any place you feel safe and can heal.

Summer: That sounds good.

Kyle: Then let’s pack our bags.

Summer: I can’t– we can’T. It’s not fair to you. I know how important it is to you to be here for your mom.

Kyle: Look, I am out of my mind with worry for my mom. But you are my priority. So, whatever you need, you say the word.

Summer: One, um… one priority that we both should have is explaining to harrison that deedee is back.

Kyle: He’ll be thrilled. I’m not looking forward to the other conversation. When we tell him phyllis is gone.

Summer: No, we can’t– we can’t do that. It’s– it’s too– it’s too soon. We’ve– we’ve got to wait.

Kyle: Summer, wait for what? And why?

Summer: Harrison is so young.

Kyle: We told him about ashland and he handled it. Look, it’s not gonna be easy, but I think he’s ready.

Summer: Maybe I’m not ready. Kyle, can you just respect me on this, please?

Kyle: I’ll do whatever you want, on one condition. Come back home with me.

[ Sniffs ]

Daniel: Hello. Hello? Mom, is that you? Type 2 diabetes?

Diane: I care a great deal about summer. I know how difficult this must be for her.

Ashley: And yet you’re still here.

Diane: And I will do everything I can to make her comfortable.

Ashley: Find another place to live. Please, call michael. Get a judge to give you a change of residence.

Jack: This is diane’s home, she stays, and I won’t have you attacking her.

Ashley: She’s not the victim here. Summer is.

Jack: Oh, you’re summer’s champion now?

Ashley: Somebody has to be. Her mother’s dead, jack. And yeah, phyllis and I had a common goal the last few months of her life. And I do feel like I need to stand up for summer.

Jack: Your common goal was destroying diane’s life. It was a hate campaign. It was ugly and personal. It had nothing to do with summer.

Ashley: We were trying to protect the people that we love from her. And the fact that she’s standing here, wearing your ring, obviously, we failed miserably.

Jack: And love won. How about that? Not that you’d know anything about love.

Ashley: Oh, come on.

Tucker: That’s a matter of perspective.

Jack: You stay out of this, and you give diane peace.

Ashley: Or what? Are you threatening me? She’s gonna slip up. She will violate the terms of her bail and I will call the D.A. And she’s gonna be back in jail before you know it.

Jack: Oh, you would do that, wouldn’t you? Even if she’s innocent.

Ashley: She’s not innocent.

Jack: I thought you hit rock bottom when you brought tucker into this house.

Ashley: Oh, look who’s talking.

Jack: Apparently there are no depths to which you won’t stoop.

Ashley: What you’ve done to summer is unconscionable, jack.

Kyle: That’s enough! If any of you give a damn about summer, you’ll leave her the hell out of your feud.

Daniel: Well, you haven’t hung up, so I’m guessing it’s you. Don’t be mad at summer for telling me. I’m glad she did. Means you’re alive, right?

[ Sighs ] And the thought of getting to see you again, and getting to talk to you, actually talk to you…

[ Sighs] Summer told me why you left. You can’t just disappear, mom. You can’T. And we love you and we need you. Summer needs you and you can’t just put her in that position. It’s not fair to her and it’s cruel. And look, I know– I know that you love us too much to keep hurting us. So, just please come back. Come home and we will fix this. We can figure this all out. Just come back and we can be a family again.

[ Phone ringing ]

Sharon: Long-term relationships are difficult. Hurting your partner is, sadly, pretty much inevitable. That doesn’t mean it’s not fixable.

Nate: People warned me that power could be intoxicating. Elena said it louder than anyone. I denied it, but they were right. The feeling of being in control, making decisions that result in millions of dollars in profit, leading teams of employees who look up to me, who want to impress me, gave me a new confidence. And it made me reckless. And it led to me making some big mistakes.

Sharon: Everyone screws up sometimes, nate. Elena loves you. Maybe if you talk to her the way you’re talking to me, apologize, you can repair the damage.

Nate: Hmm.

Elena: And I defended you. I tried to encourage you to take the higher path and to fix things with your family, because deep down, I thought the man that I was in love with still existed.

Nate: I am still that man.

Elena: You can’t possibly believe that. Look at yourself, nate. You have changed, and not for the good. Unless this is who you’ve always been. Selfish and ambitious.

[ Elena scoffs ]

[ Glass smashing ] (Cheering)

Jack: Summer, I am very sorry you witnessed that. I–

Diane: We’re glad you’re home. Are you all right?

Kyle: No, she’s not. And this isn’t a home, it’s a battleground. You have your issues with my dad. But I was really hoping you’d be considerate enough not to involve summer. Apparently, my expectations were too high.

Ashley: I apologize. Summer, I’m so very sorry that I let my anger get the best of me. It will not happen again.

Jack: I was out of line, too. We can all do a lot better.

Kyle: Yeah, you do, because this, it has to stop. Do you understand me? Summer needs a safe space, and right now, this sure as hell isn’t it.

Diane: Summer, I’m sorry, too. I– I know that until there’s proof that I’m innocent, it’s going to be difficult for you to be in the same room with me. But like I said before, I will give you all the space you need. You will hardly know I’m here.

Kyle: Hey, you okay?

Summer: I can’t take this anymore.

Kyle: You don’t have to. Forget it, you can battle it out all you want. Summer and I are taking harrison and we’re moving into the pool house. It’s the only way we’re gonna get some relief.

Ashley: That’s probably a smart idea.

Nate: An apology and an explanation won’t fix this. I’m ashamed to say this isn’t the first time I messed up. So, whatever forgiveness elena found in the past, it’s definitely not happening now.

Sharon: Whatever it is you did, it sounds like you knew the potential consequences and you chose to take the risk.

Nate: And here I am, the point of no return, with no one to blame but myself.

[ Clasps clicking ]

[ Sobbing ]

[ Sniffling ]

[ Gasping and crying ]

[ Sobbing ]

Kyle: Are you good with taking up residence in the pool house?

Summer: I wish that moving 100 feet away would actually solve something. Thank you for trying to protect me, though.

Kyle: I love you. There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do for you. You know that, right? And we’ll make an adventure out of it. Tell harrison we’re going camping.

Summer: Staying in the pool house isn’t exactly roughing it, but you’re right. Harrison will like that idea.

Kyle: And I like that you won’t have to go to the park to get peace and quiet so you can heal.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Kyle: I want to help you through this. If you’ll let me. Hey, you okay?

Summer: Yeah. I just… we need to tell harrison about deedee.

Diane: Kyle.

[ Kyle laughing ]

Kyle: I’m so glad you’re home.

Diane: Oh, me too.

[ Diane laughing ]

Harmony: It’s so wonderful to see you, son.

Devon: It’s amazing to see you.

Harmony: Let me take a look at you. Just as handsome as ever.

Devon: You look beautiful.

Harmony: Oh, well, thank you for saying so.

Devon: How did this happen? I didn’t know you were in town.

Harmony: Oh, it is the most incredible thing. I was in chicago working at a conference for the last few days and as I was leaving, tucker reaches out to me. Yeah, told me about this lounge and neil’s name and how you and lily were gonna put together this event to celebrate his memory. Yeah, he even sent a fancy car to bring me here.

Devon: Tucker did that?

Harmony: Yeah.

Diane: Thank you both for never giving up on me. Even when I thought it was hopeless. And how lucky am I that michael was my lawyer? He managed to pull off the impossible, getting me out of that jail, at least for now.

Jack: No, forever. We are in this with you for the long fight.

Kyle: Mm-hmm. Dad and I are not going to give up until we prove your innocence.

Diane: Well, I know the two of you believe that I had nothing to do with phyllis’s murder, but there’s a lot of people in this town who feel differently, including your wife. How is summer going to react when she sees me here in her home? I don’t want to cause any tension in your marriage.

Kyle: I am going to do everything I can to help summer accept that we are all back under this roof, together. Because you need to be here. This is your home too.

Jack: That’s exactly what I told your mother.

Diane: It’s almost like the two of you rehearsed that.

Kyle: Uh, does she know about, um…

Diane: Know about what?

Jack: I think he is referring to a new house guest we have who is complicating things a bit.

Diane: Someone else moved in? Who?

Jack: Brace yourself. Tucker.

Diane: Tucker mccall is living here?

[ Diane scoffing ]

Devon: So tucker, you invited my mom here.

Tucker: I did. Yeah, I thought it would be nice for her to be here and to see you.

Devon: Well, that was an incredible gesture.

Tucker: I’m just glad it worked out.

Diane: Why on earth would tucker… it was ashley, wasn’t it?

Jack: My sister claims she has every right since I brought you into this house without her approval. She’s just trying to prove a point. But worse, I think she actually has feelings for the guy.

Jack: I will do everything I can to contain this for all our sakes.

Harmony: Oh, well, I don’t know how amazing I am but I sure am eager to meet him.

Devon: I think you’re amazing. Look at everything you’ve accomplished in the last few years. You have a degree and you’ve been clean and sober for almost two decades. There’s nothing easy about any of that. I’m very proud of you.

Harmony: Mm. Well, to hear you say it like that, I’m proud of me too.

Devon: Good, you should be. How’s your job?

Harmony: So far so good.

Devon: Yeah.

Harmony: Yeah, I love what I do. I do, I do. I just, uh, I get to contribute to the community. I get to help people in need. I remember what it was like to be in their shoes, you know. So, it’s just so much more rewarding.

Devon: Good. It’s amazing.

Harmony: Yeah. But look who’s talking, you know. I’m sorry, it makes my heart want to burst seeing how well you’re doing, you know. Your son, abby, and– and– and, oh, I’m so relieved that the two of you, you and lily resolved your issues. The two of you working side by side again.

Devon: I know. It feels like everything in my life is moving in the right direction.

Harmony: Yes. Well, even with tucker? Seems like he’s trying to make up for lost time.

Devon: He is. He really is. And I think that making this happen is a great start.

Tucker: Hey, victor.

Victor: Tucker.

Tucker: Enjoying your expanded empire?

Victor: I have big plans for your company, you know.

Tucker: I should hope so.

Victor: By the way, it’s very touching what you did. Bringing harmony to see devon.

Tucker: Well, anything for your son, right?

Victor: Right.

Abby: Hi.

Nikki: Hi, abby. What a great job you did of planning this. It’s a wonderful evening.

Abby: Oh, thank you. That means a lot coming from a party planning expert like yourself.

Nikki: Oh, I don’t know about that.

Abby: Please, what you did with that bicentennial gala? It was an unforgettable night.

Nikki: It was a lovely evening until…

Abby: Right. Yes, let’s hope tonight has a much better ending.

Nate: This is a wonderful surprise. So, are you two the welcoming committee?

Nikki: Hi, nate.

Nate: Abby, nikki.

Nikki: I didn’t realize you and victoria were back from the west coast.

Nate: Yes, we just got back and I came straight here.

Abby: Oh, I didn’t realize you were out of town until I texted you the invite.

Nate: It was kind of a last minute trip.

Abby: Where’s elena?

Nate: Um, elena couldn’t make it. Is that harmony?

Nikki: Tucker’s surprise for devon.

Victor: May I have your attention, please? We’re here to celebrate a man who was my friend. Not only on a personal level, but I trusted him implicitly in business. One of the few people I ever trusted, it was neil winters. Now, we can talk about a lot of his accomplishments, but one thing stands out to me as a father who’s concerned about family, is how he dealt with raising devon and lily. Every parent hopes to pass on to his offspring a solid foundation with which the children who go out into the world and deal with all the slings and arrows. Often outrageous fortune. Neil did that. The fact that both devon and lily are here tonight, honoring the memory of the man who raised them, says everything about my friend. And says everything about family because after all has been said and done, it is family that holds us together. So cheers to neil and his memory.

Summer: I– I– I don’t understand. Did the– did the D.A. Drop the charges?

Kyle: Michael was able to get mom out on bail. Dad and I tried to reach you.

Summer: Did the cops find out any new information?

Kyle: Unfortunately not.

Jack: Summer, I realize this is going to be difficult for you, but diane is innocent. She didn’t kill phyllis and it’s only a matter of time before we find evidence that proves that. Hi.

Devon: Mr. Newman, thank you so much for what you said about our dad.

Lily: Yeah, truly. That was so beautiful.

Victor: My pleasure, I meant every word, you know that.

Lily: I do. Thank you.

Abby: Dad.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart.

Abby: That was a beautiful speech. It brought me to tears.

Victor: It was spoken from the heart. Uh, by the way, I’m very glad that I have you two by yourselves for a moment.

Devon: Oh, yeah.

Victor: Devon, I want to tell you how proud I am that you’re now becoming a part of my family.

Devon: Thank you.

Victor: I know that you make my daughter very happy. That means a hell of a lot to me, okay?

Abby: I am.

Victor: So cheers to both of you.

Abby: Cheers. Everything feels right and it’s all because of this guy.

Nikki: It was very brave of you to come tonight, to this room, the last place you saw your mother.

Daniel: I actually think I’m handling it okay.

Nikki: Well, I see that you are, but still, it must be a terrible struggle for you and summer.

Sharon: A loss that big, it can take a while for life to feel normal again. In some respects, it never goes away.

Nikki: And I know I’ve said this to you before, but I am deeply sorry for what happened. I just want you to know that you have my full support and victor’S.

Sharon: And mine. Whatever you need, daniel. If you want someone to talk to or just listen. I’ll pour your favorite coffee for you, on the house, any time.

Daniel: Thank you. It’s very kind of you both. Um, I need to just excuse myself for a moment.

Nikki: Yeah, yeah.

[ Nikki sighing ]

Nate: Four years. Hard to believe.

Devon: I know exactly what you mean. I am, uh, happy that you showed up though.

Nate: Glad I got the invite.

Devon: Yeah, that’s what neil would’ve wanted. Could, uh, elena not get off work?

Nate: I, uh, came here straight from the airport. Elena had a long, tough day. I’m pretty sure she’s already crashed out at our place. You know, um, I think I’m gonna grab another drink and say hi to lily. I haven’t spoken to her yet.

Devon: Yeah, man. Enjoy the party.

Nate: Thanks.

Sharon: Are you having a good time?

Mariah: I am, a very nice time. Uh, but I was hoping that you could enlighten me.

Sharon: Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Mariah: So, I obviously know about harmony from devon. Um, but this is the first time we’ve met. What I don’t understand is ashley. She seems to be staring daggers at harmony every time she thinks somebody isn’t looking.

Sharon: Uh, good observation skills.

Mariah: It’s a gift.

Sharon: Back when tucker and ashley were married, he and harmony had a moment.

Mariah: Got it, got it. So, harmony is not ashley’s favorite person. Well, that certainly makes things interesting.

Harmony: You know, I can’t thank you enough for contacting me.

Tucker: The smile on devon’s face is all the thanks I need.

Harmony: I am so in awe of that young man, everything he’s accomplished. But even more importantly, who he is. With little to no help from the two of us.

Tucker: Probably just as well.

[ Harmony chuckling ] I’m still not very good at doing the right things for the right reasons, but ashley’s helping me get there.

Harmony: I’m really glad that you two got back together. I hate the mistake we made that hurt her. But hopefully, you have learned your lesson and you don’t screw things up again.

Tucker: You and me both.

Abby: Hi.

Abby: So, when we spoke earlier, you knew about tucker’s big surprise.

Ashley: I did. He’s making a real effort with his son.

Abby: Well, I have to hand it to the guy. He found a way to make tonight even more special for devon. Although, I’m sure you’re wishing that he found another way to do it.

Ashley: I think it’s time I said hello.

[ Abby sighing ] We’re done.

[ Summer sighing ]

Diane: Summer, I know my being here comes as a shock to you. You, uh, you still believe I’m responsible for phyllis’s death and I– I can understand why you feel that way, but I also promise you it’s not true.

Summer: Because your promises mean so much?

Diane: No, because I would never, ever have taken your mother away from you.

Summer: You are responsible, diane. Since the minute you lured jack to L.A., You set off this whole chain of events that has put us where we are now and after everything you’ve done, after all the lies you told, it’s not fair. It’s not fair that you get to be here with the people that you love and my family has been ripped apart. I– I’m sorry.

[ Summer sighing ] I’m happy for you guys, but I won’t be celebrating this return. I– I– I can’T.

Kyle: Maybe we should go out, take a walk, get some air.

Summer: That sounds like a good idea.

Kyle: Okay.

Diane: Um, hang on, summer. Uh, there’s something I need to explain to you.

Ashley: Hello, harmony.

Harmony: Oh, hi, ashley. So nice to see you.

Ashley: You as well. So nice you could be here for devon.

Harmony: Ah, well, it’s even more meaningful to me since I wasn’t able to attend neil’s original service.

Tucker: Yeah, I wasn’t either.

Harmony: Oh, it’s so strange being back here after all these years have gone by. So much has changed and yet, so much has kind of stayed the same.

[ Harmony chuckling ]

Ashley: Oh, yeah. Such as what?

Harmony: Well, the connection between the two of you for one. I really do wish you all the best. For the two of you to have found your way back to each other after dealing with so much pain and anger, it’s such a gift. It’s something to be cherished and admired.

Ashley: That’s a lovely thing to say.

Nate: The whole event. It’s great. You, abby, devon, you’ve really outdone yourselves. I mean, the music, pictures. What a perfect way to keep neil’s memory alive. Not that anyone needs reminding.

Lily: Yeah. Well, thank you. It, uh, definitely worked out. And thank you for coming on such short notice. Devon and I thought it was important that you were here.

Nate: I wasn’t in L.A. Long, but, uh, I was ready to leave.

Nikki: You must be over the moon having little aria living so close by.

Sharon: I cannot get over those cute baby cheeks and I love having mariah and tessa nearby too.

Mariah: Yeah. Yeah, I know exactly where I fall on the priority list now.

Nikki: Now, now, don’t blame sharon. Grandchildren are life’s greatest blessings.

Lily: Look, I know what it’s like to grieve and to feel lost, and then you feel this shame because you feel like you’re not living up to your ideals, but what really matters are what decisions you can live with and which ones you can’T.

Lily: Because I know you. Bye.

Diane: Summer, I give you my word that I will do my best not to crowd you. So take all the time and space you need and I will do my best to stay out of your way. Although, I can only do so much with my present circumstances.

Summer: Which are what?

Diane: I– I have to wear this ankle monitor. It’s a– it’s a condition of my bail agreement, so I– I can’t leave the property.

Summer: So, you’re– you’re gonna be here where I live, 24/7. I– I can’t– I can’t avoid you?

Kyle: Hey, I’m sure we can all find a way to coexist. For harrison, if for no other reason.

[ Phone chiming ]

Summer: I have to go.

Kyle: Now? Why?

Summer: I just, I can’t be here right now.

Kyle: What? Summer. Hey, wait, wait. (Vo) no matter what type of severe asthma you have…

Lily: Abby, honestly, I cannot get over how you and your family created this lounge after my dad. I mean, this is amazing.

Abby: Oh, thank you.

Lily: I mean, he loved music so much. He could have had a career just owning a club.

Devon: Oh, yeah. But he still didn’t care about anything as much as you and me.

Lily: No, family always came first.

Malcolm: For my brother, family was everything.

Lily: Oh, my!

Devon: Malcolm, what you doing here, man?

Lily: Hi. I thought you were in the maldives. What’s going on?

Malcolm: Come on, now. Like I would miss all of you in one place, paying tribute to the man himself.

Lily: Yeah.

Malcolm: There he is. Besides, you all know me. When it came to the great neil winters, I show up. Whatever it takes.

Devon: Hey malcolm, you remember my mom, harmony, right?

Harmony: Also known as yolanda, once upon a time.

Malcolm: I do, I do. It’s nice to see you again.

Harmony: You too.

Malcolm: You know that young man right there? He’s a blessing to all his parents. You should be proud.

Devon: Thank you, man.

Nate: You missed it, malcolm. There was a lot of love here earlier.

Lily: Well, there’s even more now.

Malcolm: Oh, look at this space, it’s got neil written all over it. Like he designed it.

Devon: Right. Nah, this was all abby, victor, and nikki’s vision.

Malcolm: Well, you did the damn thing. Well done.

Abby: Thank you. It was my pleasure.

Harmony: Neil manages to inspire people, even after he’s gone.

Lily: So, I guess it means he’s never really gone, right?

Nate: He was so supportive of me being a doctor. I wonder what he’d think now?

Malcolm: Are you following your heart?

Nate: I am.

Malcolm: Well, there it is. Neil would be the last one to tear you down for that.

Abby: Yeah.

Harmony: That was neil, trying to lift people up, right?

Malcolm: Yeah.

Harmony: Reminding people that there’d always be a better tomorrow, no matter how bad today was. He learned from his own mistakes, was able to find forgiveness and hope when you didn’t think it was possible. Devon and I owe so much of who we are now to neil. He raised devon as if he was his own after I failed my son. He never stopped believing in you, devon. Devon?

Devon: I’m sorry.

Lily: What were you thinking about?

Devon: I– I just made a decision about something that I need to do for myself and for neil.

[ Kyle sighing ]

Kyle: Still nothing from summer. I shouldn’t have let her go.

Jack: Look, she needed some fresh air and some time to think. You handled it very well.

Kyle: You know, maybe– maybe it’s nothing, but she disappeared earlier without telling me where she’s going. Now, she gets a text and she’s off again.

Jack: Do you think somehow they’re linked?

Kyle: I– could be, I don’t know. Where does she go? She keeps running away. I am trying so hard to reconnect with her in the middle of all this chaos, but she just keeps taking off. She pushes me away.

Jack: Sometimes in situations like this, the best you can do is be there to welcome her home with an open heart and open arms.

Kyle: I can’t wait that long. I need to find her.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: Hello? Somebody there?

Summer: Relax, it’s just me.

Daniel: You got here fast.

Summer: Yeah well, I wish you’d picked a different spot.

Daniel: This is your spot.

Summer: I don’t want to keep meeting here. It feels risky.

Daniel: You know what summer? I really don’t care what you do and what you don’t want right now. This is gonna be about what I have to say.

Devon: Yeah, I was just thinking about how almost everything in my life I have today because neil was gracious enough all those years ago to welcome me into your family. And you and I are running a company right now that only exists because he was willing to create it with me. And I’ve never imagined being able to do enough in life to thank him or honor him properly. And I don’t know why it took me this long to think of doing this because it makes so much sense to me, but… I wanna take neil’s last name and legally go by devon winters.

[ Lily exhaling ] Would you be okay with me doing something like that?

Harmony: That’s exactly how it should be.

Devon: Yeah? Malcolm, what do you think?

Malcolm: Hey. You know what he would say, right?

Devon: I think he’d say, “my man.”

Malcolm: My man. Devon, he would love this. Now, you know him. He’d try to keep it all cool on the outside when on the inside, he’d be a mess. You’re doing the right thing. Look at you. My boy is finally part of the family. You’re a winters now and you’re my brother.

Devon: Thank you. Thank you, man.

Malcolm: Yeah.

Devon: Lily, do you approve of me doing this too?

[ Lily chuckling ]

Lily: Of course, I approve. I– I love this. I mean, what a beautiful way to honor dad. And you’re already my brother, in every way. Devon winters. Devon and lily winters.

Devon: Sounds– sounds good.

Lily: Yeah.

Devon: Thank you. I think he’d be all right. I love you.

Harmony: You too. We live our lives on our home’s fabrics.

Jack: Oh, I can’t tell you how good it is to hold you in my arms again. Feel you like this.

Diane: Jack, are you okay? Really? You were always so worried about me, but this constant turmoil, I– I know it’s taking a toll on you.

Jack: I’ll be okay. I keep hoping that once we find out what really happened to phyllis that night, things will start turning around for all of us. And not that summer’s loss is going to be felt any less. It’s just I– I hope with time she can start to heal, that we all can.

[ Diane sighing ]

Daniel: Went to the jazz lounge tonight for a tribute to neil. You know, the same place where our mother died, where we had her memorial. Where everyone had a good cry over it.

Summer: Yeah, okay. What happened?

Daniel: What happened? What happened was every time I turned around, people were offering me their condolences. People were wondering how the two of us were coping. Now, lily, who stood by me through this whole thing, tonight, while she was consoling me, I just sat there with this big fat lie hanging over my head. And you know what? I hated myself for it.

Summer: Daniel, there is no reason for you to feel that way.

Daniel: I can’t keep lying, summer. I can’t keep deceiving people that care about me. I can’t think about diane being tried and convicted for something that she didn’t do. And I’m not gonna do it anymore.

[ Summer sighing ]

Summer: What does that mean?

Daniel: What do you think it means? We’re gonna go tell everyone the truth, that mom is alive. Then, we’re gonna go find her and we’re gonna bring her home.

[ Summer exhaling ]

Abby: Uh, well, I declare this party officially over.

Lily: Whoo! And cheers to abby for doing such a great job.

Abby: Oh, well, it was so much fun. I had a ball doing it.

Harmony: Yeah. So let’s touch base in the morning, okay?

Devon: That sounds perfect.

Lily: And where are you staying?

Harmony: Right here in the hotel.

Lily: Oh, okay. You too?

Malcolm: No, I actually got to catch a flight up out of here.

Devon: Leave already?

Malcolm: I may have gone awol on my assignment.

Lily: Oh, okay. You left that part out.

Malcolm: Yeah, it’s no big deal. I’ll get back before they ever knew I was gone.

Nate: Well, you gotta come back soon. And stay longer next time.

Malcolm: I will. You good?

Nate: Yeah, yeah, of course. Just, uh, good to see you. Well, uh, I think I’ll, uh, get a room here too. I’m wiped out. Elena has an early shift and I don’t want to disturb her. I’ll walk you to the elevator?

Harmony: Oh, sure. Yes.

Nate: Goodnight, y’all.

Harmony: Good to see you.

Malcolm: Good to see you.

Harmony: Yeah. Oh, and good night, mr. Winters.

Devon: Good night, mom.

Abby: Well, I am gonna wait for you out front, whenever you’re ready.

Devon: Okay. Love you.

Abby: I love you. Good night. Good night. So good to see you.

Malcolm: Great to see you, take care of yourself.

Abby: You too.

Lily: Oh, man, I am so happy, I am. Devon winters. I love this place. And you, you always show up in the nick of time. How do you do that, huh? You’re here. Look at you.

Malcolm: I’m here. I show up for neil. You know why? Because if things were reversed and it all ended a little differently, he’d be showing up for me, I know he would.

Devon: Yeah, you’re right about that.

Malcolm: It looks like tonight was a beautiful evening.

Lily: Yeah.

Malcolm: You did that man proud. Tonight and always.

Devon: I love you, dad.

Lily: We miss you more than you know.

Malcolm: Your star keeps shining, my brother. It keeps shining.
