Leo: Guinevere, i just heard the good news about the part, and I haven’t been this excited since… they freed britney.

[Somber music]

Leo: So why are you crying?

Lucas: Where’s my lawyer?

Xander: I have no idea, but right now, the dummy at the front desk thinks I’m your lawyer.

Lucas: What do you want with me?

Xander: Why are you trying to frame my fiancée?

Lucas: I am not lying. I saw sarah at the dimera mansion.

Xander: Sarah didn’t kill abigail. She couldn’t kill anyone. Now, you tell these cops that you made it all up, or I’m gonna tear you apart with my bare hands.

Sarah: “Out doing an errand. Be back soon. Love you.” What errand?

[Knocking at door]

Sarah: Chad.

Chad: Can I come in?

Sarah: Sure. I heard about your brother. I’m really sorry.

Chad: I’m not here to talk about jake. I’m here to talk about abigail.

John: [Sighs]

Steve: Thanks for meeting me on no notice.

John: Well, you said it was an emergency. I assumed you’re talking about orpheus.

Steve: Can you believe our idiot governor put that sociopath back on the street? John, we need to deal with him, before he hurts someone we love.

Marlena: [Gasps]

[Intense music]

Marlena:Get out of my chair!

Orpheus: Ah, the good doctor is in.

[Soft orchestration]

Gwen: Jake. He’s dead. Someone’s shot him.

Leo: He can’t be dead. I heard he just signed a deal for a new movie.

Gwen: What?

Leo: Jake gyllenhaal?

Gwen: Oh, for god’s sake. No! Not that jake. My jake.

Leo: Oh, him. Don’t scare me like that.

Gwen: Bloody hell. Honestly, you have the sensitivity of a doorknob.

Leo: What am I supposed to be sensitive about? The two of you broke up eons ago. He cheated on you with gabi hernandez, and you hate him now.

Gwen: I know, but it doesn’t mean that I wanted the poor prat dead. I just didn’t know I’d be so worked up over it. I guess I’m just remembering all the good times that we had together.

Leo: Yeah. Well, you’ll always have philly. I am sorry.

Gwen: Thank you.

Leo: Anything I can do to cheer you up?

Gwen: Like what?

Leo: We could get mimosas and have a toast, in jakey’s honor.

Gwen: Oh. NO. I’d just get drunk and morose.

Leo: You cannot be morose! You just got out of prison. Jake is your past. It’s time we think about your future.

Gwen: What future?

Leo: Oh, come now. I know you’ve got a plan to get hunky xander away from sarah hortoN.

Sarah: I guess you talked to rafe?

Chad: He said you gave a statement. I want to know what was in it.

Sarah: What do you wanna know?

Chad: Lucas… said that he saw you at the house the night that abigail was murdered. He said that he saw you running down the stairs, and you dropped something on the way out. He thinks that it might have been the knife that killed abi. So what I wanna know iS… did that really happen? Were you there that night?

Sarah: I would tell you, if I could. I just don’t know. I don’t know.

Lucas: I never said sarah killed abigail.

Xander: Right, you just put her at the scene of the crime possibly holding the murder weapon.

Lucas: Because that’s the trutH.

Xander: The hell it is! You’re just trying to put the blame on sarah, ’cause you’re trying to cover your own ass.

Lucas: If i thought that i killed abigail, I would own up to it.

Xander: These– these memories of yours, how come they only came bubbling up to the surface once your back was against the wall?

Lucas: I was under hypnosis when I remembered those things, all right? If you don’t believe me, ask marlena evans.

Xander: Hypnosis. A load of crap. You just close your eyes and say anything you want to.

Lucas: I think marlena would know if that’s what I was doing. And you know what? You should look her up. You won’t find a more respected psychiatrist than she is.

Marlena: How did you get in here?

Orpheus: The door was unlocked.

Marlena: I’m calling security.

Orpheus: Marlena, by some miracle, I just got out of prison. Do you actually think I would break in here the next day?

Marlena: I wouldn’t put that past you.

Orpheus: All I need is a few minutes of your time. We can leave the door open, if it’ll make you more comfortable.

Marlena: You’d better make it a very fast few minutes.

Orpheus: I’m sure that by now you’ve heard that my son is the father of jan spears’ baby.

Marlena: YeS. I’ve heard that evan is claiming that. I imagine that shawn is a little skeptical.

Orpheus: Well, christian– that’s his birth name– is gonna prove he’s telling the truth, and that’s why i need your help.

Steve: So when orpheus said he wanted a new start I suggested he do that someplace other than the scene of most of his crimes.

John: And?

Steve: He said he’d been thinking about going out west. Maybe seattlE.

John: Where all your kids are.

Steve: That’s right. He’s planning something, john. I know it.

John: Come on, man. It’s in the blood, i mean, look at that crazy kid of his. He’s trying to take away the baby from shawn.

Steve: Yeah. I know. Kayla told me that he’s saying the kid is his, but even if he is the father, what moron judge would take a baby away from a man like shawn and hand him over to someone who murdered the mother of his first chilD.

John: What moron governor grants pardons to felons and murderers?

Steve: Right. You know, orpheus couldn’t care less about that baby. He’s got a bigger agenda in mind. Something way more personal.

Marlena: What kind of help could you need from me?

Orpheus: I think we both agree that my son is… mentally unstablE.

Marlena: People who kill people usually are.

Orpheus: Hm. Well, the last time he got into trouble, it was for doing the bidding of your granddaughteR. Allie, is it?

Marlena: She– she was possessed, at the time.

Orpheus: Oh, I see. Is that how you let the members of your family off the hook? With that line?

Marlena: You didn’t tell me what you want.

Orpheus: You’re so hostile, marlena. I can only guess that you’re still resentful of when i asked you to get christian out of bayview.

Marlena: You didn’t ask. You threatened my great-grandchild.

Orpheus: Yeah. Well, I thought I was doing my son–I thought I was doing what was best for him.

Marlena: What’s best for your son is to be in bayvieW. He should be there right now.

Orpheus: Well, he certainly needs help. Especially now that he’s gonna be raising my grandson. What I want–what I need is for him to get good counseling.

Marlena: Are you asking me to readmit him to bayview?

Orpheus: No, no. I’m asking you to be his psychiatrist.

[Elevator chimes]

Evan: It’s about time. The lab tech’s waiting for uS.

Shawn: There’s been a change of plan.

Evan: What does that mean?

Shawn: I’m not agreeing to this test, unless we do it my way.

Evan: You do remember that court order I showed you?

Shawn: I’m not gonna trust something this important to some lab tech that you paid off. My aunt kayla’s gonna oversee this test personally, so that I know the results are real. And you’ll know, too.

Evan: Fine by me.

Shawn: Just let’s get this over with.

Gwen: [Sighs] I didn’t tell xander that I knew that kristen had sarah, so I just assumed that we were a lost cause. But now, it looks like sarah might be a person of interest in abigail’s murder, so I don’t know. Maybe I have a chancE.

Leo: That’s the kind of talk you only hear in salem.

Gwen: Are you saying that I’m crazy?

Leo: Totally. It’s one of the many reasons i adore you.

Gwen: I might be driven, yes, and I might not be very nice, from time to time, but I’m not crazy. You get that straight.

Leo: Well, now, sarah, she really is bonkers, and she went all lizzie borden on abigail. And now, you have a chance with randy xandy.

Gwen: It’s still somewhat tricky. Xander pointed out that sarah’s mental state is partially due to the fact that I gave her the second dose of that drug.

Leo: So you need to be careful about using the crazy against her.

Gwen: Exactly. I did pay xander a visit yesterday.

Leo: And?

Gwen: Well, you should have seen the depths of my remorsE. You would have been quite impressed.

Leo: Was xander?

Gwen: I think so. He was receptive, but then sarah turned up. Thought I was kristen and she lunged at me with a knife.

Leo: So he saw the crazy for himself? I have to congratulate you on your sense of timing. You get out of the big house, right as your romantic rival is on her way in. [Laughs]

Chad: Sarah, I need you to help me here. I don’t understand how you cannot remember being at my housE.

Sarah: I said in my statement that I remember… Going to see gwen at statesville, and then coming back here to lie down because my meds were making me feel out of it, and I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I knew it was morning.

Chad: Which means you didn’t see abigail.

Sarah: Not necessarily. I had a conversation with marlena that day and told her that I’d had another hallucination. And she suggested that I go speak to abigail, because she got the same drug that I did.

Chad: Rolf’s drug.

Sarah: Right.

Chad: Her flashback hallucinations were scary. One time, she thought that I was ben, and i wanted to strangle her. She said it seemed completely real.

Sarah: Yeah, those are what– that’s what mine are like, too. I thought that victor was kristen coming at me with a syringe, and then yesterday, I–

Chad: What?

Sarah: I found gwen here with xander, and I thought that she had a gun, and she was pointing it at him, so I grabbed a knife, and I threatened her with it. And that’s not it. I threatened and attacked nicole, and xander’s ex-wife chanel. Sometimes, I feel like I should be locked up.

Chad: Do you think that it is possible that you… had a hallucination the night that abby died? And do you think that it is possible that you went to see her that night? And then you thought that she was kristen? And that you… might have stabbed her to death?

John: You know, for starters, we can put a 24-hour tail on orpheus, and–

Steve: No, no, no. I’m done with being careful with hiM. Why wait around for him to make the first move?

John: You know, partner, it seems to me like you already know what you wanna do.

Steve: We need to stop him dead in his tracks, and the sooner the better. There’s no other choice, johN. We need to eliminate the threaT.

John: It sounds to me like you’re talking about killing the guY.

Steve: It sounds like that for a reason.

Marlena: You’re seriously asking me to provide therapy for your son?

Orpheus: Why not? You worked wonders with the necktie killer. The word is you were going to begin seeing jan spears, so what’s wrong with adding one more reformed murderer to the roster?

Marlena: Because you despise me. Why would you want me to work with your child?

Orpheus: Because I can separate facts from feelings, and the fact is you’re a gifted psychiatrisT. Beyond that, you were an important mother figure for him when he was a child.

Marlena: You were holding me hostage.

Orpheus: But that doesn’t discount the fact that you and he formed an important bond. I think he would respond well to you. What do you think?

Marlena: I think he would do well with therapy. I will find him somebody very talented, but that will not be me.

Xander: Let’s pretend for a second that you aren’t a notorious liar. Maybe you’re just so terrified of going to prison that your psyche invented these memories of sarah at the dimera house.

Lucas: I think marlena would have known the difference.

Xander: I don’t give a damn what you think.

Lucas: Listen, I was drunk out of my mind. I was, but i was conscious, and I remember things. My memory’s becoming clearer and clearer, and I know that I saw sarah there.

Xander: You’re certain it was her?

Lucas: You think I want to incriminate maggie’s daughter? My own cousin? I have no choice because she was there!

Xander: So prove it.

Lucas: I can’t prove it! But this morning, the police came up with new evidence that backs up exactly what I said.

Sarah: I swear that i don’t remember being at your house, but I can’t rule out the possibility that I was there, in some sort of fugue state, especially if lucas says that he saw me.

Chad: Don’t you normally remember your hallucinations? Abby always did. So it seems that if you thought you had saw kristen, that you would remember it.

Sarah: Yeah. I usually do, but my dosage was off, and my brain was so hazy. I don’t know. It’s just– it’s possible that I forgot what happened.

Chad: Thank you for your honesty. I appreciate it.

Sarah: Chad, I loved abigail. She was a wonderful, kind person, and in my right state of mind, I would never hurt her. It’s just that I’m not always in my right state of mind.

Chad: I have to go. If you remember anything–

Sarah: You’ll be the first to know. I promise.

Leo: So do you know if the cops are planning to charge sarah with murder anytime soon?

Gwen: No. Hopefully it will be soon now, though.

Leo: Thank god it wasn’t you who bumped abigail off.

Gwen: I can’t believe you still thought it was mE. I told you I didn’t do it. I mean, how could I have killed her from prison?

Leo: Uh, you’re forgetting the part where the guard said you were missing that one nighT.

Gwen: Uh, I was reading in the library, and I fell asleep in a corner. I told him that.

Leo: You? Reading in the library? What? “Little women,” maybe? Don’t make me laugh. And by the way, I asked the guard which night you were gone, in case it was the same night abigail got hers.

Gwen: Mm, and what did he tell you?

Leo: That he couldn’t remember.

Gwen: [Scoffs] I can’t believe you didn’t trust mE.

Leo: Gwenny, you told me to get a knife and to kill abigail. What was i supposed to think?

Gwen: I didn’t mean any of that!

[Tense music]

Evan: You headed home?

Shawn: Aunt kayla said the results will be ready in an hour. John’s asleep, so, nO. I’m not going anywhere.

Evan: Me neither.

Shawn: Why the hell are you even doing this?

Evan: Uh, because that’s my son in that stroller.

Shawn: Even if it is, you’re not exactly father of the year material.

Evan: Ask rafe how well I took care of david.

Shawn: Ask my sister how many times you tried to kill her in bed.

Evan: I’ll admit I was a little out of control when that happened, but my sole focus is to be a good father for that baby and his brother, david.

Shawn: And what if you snap again? I’m not gonna let you hurt this innocent baby.

Evan: I would never hurt my own chilD. I’m going to be a wonderful dad to that little boy.

Shawn: If he is yours.

Evan: He’s mine. You’ll see in one hour.

Gwen: Chad. I didn’t expect to see you.

Chad: Well, I would totally expect to see you two with your heads together.

Leo: I hope you weren’t eavesdropping on our private conversation, chadwick.

Chad: I don’t have the slightest interest in anything either of you have to say. I see you wormed your way out of prison.

Gwen: [Sighs] Look, I know that you hate me, but I want you to know I’m terribly sorry for what happened to abigail.

Chad: After the way you treated her?

Gwen: Come on, she was still my sister, and I’m very sorry she’s gone. Poor little charlotte and thomas. I had a really good rapport with them, so if you need help with anything, at all–

Chad: You’d be the last call I’d make. Stay the hell away from my children.

Xander: What new evidence?

Lucas: My lawyers asked the cops to do another search of the dimera mansion, specifically looking for a paring knife that I cut my hand with, and it was on the bar.

Xander: Why didn’t they find it the first time they searched the house?

Lucas: I don’t know. It must have fell into a little cranny or something, but they did lab work on the blade, and the only blood found was mine. It didn’t belong to anyone else.

Xander: And that proves that you didn’t stab abigail?

Lucas: Yes that proves that. I mean the paring knife didn’t match her wounds. They said it was something more like a steak knife.

Xander: All that proves is that you didn’t stab her with your paring knife. Maybe you found some other knife in the house.

Lucas: What? Then went downstairs and made myself another drink?

Xander: I don’t know. You rummies will do anything, won’t you?

Lucas: I remember leaving the house after I cut my hand. Just like I remember seeing sarah.

Xander: None of this proves you’re innocent or that sarah’s guilty.

Lucas: No, but it proves that my story’s starting to make sense to the police.

Sarah: I can’t live like thiS. I have to figure out if i killed abigail. But how? What the hell? It’s worth a shot.

Chad: Hey, buddy.

Thomas: Hi.

Chad: I thought grandma and grandpa were taking you and your sister to the aquarium.

Thomas: I said I didn’t wanna go. They let me stay here with aunt julie and uncle doug.

Chad: Are they upstairs? Why didn’t you wanna go? You love penguins and baby sharks.

Thomas: Mommy was supposed to take me. I don’t wanna go without her.

Leo: You’re very quieT.

Gwen: Next time you accuse me of being a murderer, how about make sure that the victim’s husband isn’t within earshot!

Leo: How was I supposed to know he was lurking around?

Gwen: [Sighs] Well, I just don’t want him to get any ideas, okay? He already hates me so much, as it is. If he thinks that I killed abigail, he– look, I didn’t do it, okay? So just keep your bloody mouth shut!

Leo: I’m sorrY. Let me make it up to you. Forget the mimosas. I’m gonna pop for that champagne brunch.

Gwen: Where’d you get that kind of money?

Leo: I’m good for it. That’s all you need to knoW.

Gwen: Since when are you good for anything? You don’t have a job.

Leo: Oh, please, please still be here. Ah. Yes. I’d have preferred an alamainian emerald. But you will do just fine.

Gwen: Leo? What are you not telling me?

Leo: NothinG. Nothing. And you know me. I always find a way to make a buck.

Steve: I know what I’m talking about is extreme. I mean, just yesterday I was warning justin not to take the law into his own hands, but then orpheus threatened my children. Do you wanna live like this, knowing that he could come after marlena, or brady, or rachel at any time?

John: No. But we can’t kill the guY.

Steve: I don’t see why not.

John: Come on, man. Who are you, anyway? What have you done with my buddy steve johnson?

Steve: John, when we were with the isa, they told us to take out threats before they could do any harm.

John: We’re not with the isa anymore.

Steve: That’s not the point.

John: Listen, man, I wanna neutralize orpheus just as much as you do, but we’ve gotta come up with another option.

Steve: If there’s another option, I’d love to hear it.

John: Oh, come on, maN. You and I–we can come up with stuff on orpheus the government doesn’t even know about. We can put him away foreveR.

Steve: And while we’re doing research, orpheus is two steps ahead. If we don’t take him out now, I think something very bad is gonna happeN.

Orpheus: I thought it was your job to help people.

Marlena: I can’t help everybody who is in need. My schedule’s pretty full, and evan needs the kind of attention that I can’t really give him. And I think you like playing mind games, and that’s what i think you’re doing right now.

Orpheus: Mind games? We’re talking about my son’s sanity.

Marlena: I’m sorry. I can’t treat your son, but I can find him somebody very capable that can help him.

Sarah: Marlena, I was just– I’m so sorry. The door was open. I thought you were alone.

Marlena: This gentleman was just leaving.

Orpheus: You’re dr. Sarah horton, aren’t you?

Sarah: YeS.

Orpheus: We haven’t met yet, but–

Sarah: No. I know exactly who you are. You’re the reason that my child is dead.

You’re referring to the accident you were in–

Sarah: There was no damn accident. You and your pervert son kidnapped my mother. And one of you was driving so fast that you swerved in front of adrienne kiriakis, and you killed her! And you killed my baby. You’re a monster.

Orpheus: I’m so sorry for your loss, but if I’m a monster, what are you?

Marlena: Get out of here.

Orpheus: Oh, I’m going, but according to the news, I’m not the only one who took a life, dear. As i understand it, poor abigail dimera is dead. Stabbed to death by her own cousin. I do hope you can help her find a way to live with herself, marlena.

Marlena: I’m so sorry about that. He’s a vile man. He’s got no sense of caring. He’s got no hearT. He’s got no empathY.

Sarah: He said it like it was a fact. Abigail dimera stabbed by her own cousiN.

Marlena: He’s trying to provoke you.

Sarah: What if it’s true? My god. What if it is true?

Orpheus: How’s it going?

Evan: Shawn brady got kayla johnson to run the paternity test. He went to go find out when she’ll have the results.

Orpheus: Well, we both know what the result will be.

Evan: Well, I’m still nervous. Bradys like to stick together, and shawn’s still got my son.

Orpheus: Just try to relax. Don’t draw attention to yourselF.

Evan: What are you doing here?

Orpheus: I tried to convince marlena evans to take you on, as a patient. I was unsuccessful.

Evan: I don’t need a shrink.

Orpheus: I beg to differ.

Evan: If that’s what you think, why’d you pull me out of bayview?

Orpheus: I see now that was a mistake.

Evan: I told you I’m fine. Or i will be, once I have my son.

Gwen: To jake. He was always so good with his hands, and not just in the body shoP. Xander?

Xander: What do you want, gwen?

Gwen: Um– I can’t stop thinking about yesterday.

Xander: What about it?

Gwen: You know, sarah attacking me.

Xander: That wasn’t her fault.

Gwen: Yes. I know, and I just wanted to say I’m sorry. Don’t give up hope. I mean, her hallucinations don’t mean that she necessarily killed my sister, so I still think it was lucas horton.

Xander: Well, actually it’s looking more and more like lucas is innocent.

Chad: I’m really sorry, buddy. I know how much you miss your mom.

Thomas: Everybody calls me names since mom died.

Chad: What do you mean?

Thomas: Buddy. Champ. Kiddo.

Chad: Well, sometimes people will make up names for people that they like.

Thomas: Well, I hate it. Where were you?

Chad: I had to go see someone.

Thomas: Who?

Chad: Someone you don’t know.

Thomas: It’s all you do now is you go and see people.

Chad: Well, i’m here now. So what do you say we… Go into the backyard, and we kick the soccer ball around?

Thomas: I don’t want to.

Chad: Well, it’s a nice day. We can go to the park, and we can fly that new–

Thomas: I said no!

Chad: Well, you can’t sit cooped up all day playing video games. It’s not good for you.

Thomas: I don’t care! I don’t like it here! I wanna go home!

Chad: Well, that’s not an option, so what do we say we go outside, and we can play a game of horse, and then you can do whatever you want?

Thomas: I don’t wanna play horse with you. You always let me win. I just want mom back!

Chad: Hey, you don’t think I wouldn’t do anything to bring her back? I can’t! She’s gone, and there’s nothing that we can do about it!

Chad: Thomas, I’m sorry. I’m sorrY. Look, I didn’t mean to get angry with you. Thomas. Thomas? Thomas! I’m sorry.

[Sighs]

Gwen: So lucas’s story checks out?

Xander: Seems to. The police say that the paring knife isn’t the knife that killed abigail.

Leo: How do they know?

Xander: The depth of her wounds.

Leo: Eww.

Gwen: Have the police found the knife yet?

Xander: No, but they know what they’re looking for. It’s a steak knife or something that looks like one.

[Tense guitar music]

Shawn: The results are in.

Evan: And?

Shawn: I haven’t opened ’em yet.

Evan: What are you waiting for?

[Tense music]

Well?

Shawn: [Sighs]

Evan: [Laughs] I told you sO.

John: Can’t help you on this one, partner. You’re on your own.

Orpheus: What a coincidence. I was just chatting with your lovely wife.

John: About what?

Orpheus: Oh, I’m sure marlena’ll fill you in later. Have a good day, gentlemen.

Steve: You still wanna play by the book?

Marlena: Sarah, do you remember anything, anything at all, about the night that abigail was killed?

Sarah: Just that I had it in my mind to go and see her.

Marlena: Right, I think I suggested that to you.

Sarah: You know, abigail told me once that she felt guilty. That she was a reason that kristen got a hold of that drug that she gave me, and… what if I did go see abigail and hallucinated that she was kristen?

Marlena: How can I help you?

Sarah: I wanted to know if you would hypnotize me the way that you did lucas.

Marlena: I can, if that’s what you wanT.

Sarah: I have to know the truth, marlena, even if the truth is that I killed abigail.

Kate: Ooh, well, that’s pretty kind considering the fact that you didn’t know him from adam.

Paulina: I’m taking your word for it.

Kate: [Chuckles]

Paulina: Kate, I’m sorry for your loss.

Kate: Yeah, I don’t know– I don’t even know why his death is hitting me like this.

Paulina: Mm. You two had a thing, didn’t you?

Kate: Yeah, we did. We did, and it was pretty good for a while until he dumped me for gabi hernandez.

Ava: What is your problem?

Gabi: What?

Ava: Jake’s body isn’t even cold, and you’re talking about voting shares?

Gabi: Ej’s coming after me. He wants my job. And, you know, some of us still work for a living.

Ava: Yeah, and you know, some of us aren’t living at all! And all you can do is think about what jake’s death is gonna cost you.

Gabi: This is not personal. This is business. If ej gets his hands on jake’s dimera shares, then I’ve got nothing that… there’s no way I can stop it. Or maybe there is. Ej wouldn’t get jake’s shares if they went to jake’s widow.

Ava: What widow?

Gabi: You, babe. If you and jake were married, those shares would go to you, and there’s nothing that ej could do about it.

Ava: Yeah, there’s one little problem here. We’re not married.

Gabi: Says who?

Ej: Don’T. Don’t give me that look. I told chad he could stay in the house. It was his decision to move your grandchildren out. Can I help it if this house is so eerily quiet?

Kristen: Not anymore, it’s not.

[Chuckles]

Ej: Kristen.

Johnny: Huh? What?

Johnny: Uh, no. No, that’S… actually, that’s cherry.

Chanel: But how’d it get there?

Johnny: Um–

Allie: I threw pie in his face, okay? And then, he threw one in mine, so…

Johnny: We’re just a little competitive over the pie-tasting.

Allie: Among other things.

Chanel: You guys, I hate what this competition is doing to you, especially the one about “other things,” me being “other things,” I assume. So I just want you to promise me– please, please promise me– that what I’m about to say, it won’t come between you. It won’t make you throw more pie in each other’s faces.

Johnny: Just tell us what you’ve decided, okay? And I’ll act like a grown-up from now on.

Allie: Yeah, I will too. I promise.

Roman: So chanel’s having an important talk with johnny and allie, huh?

Abe: Mm-hmm, about the future. Right. And paulina and I decided that we should clear out of the apartment for a bit.

Roman: Well, I hope you put away the breakables before you left.

Abe: [Laughs] Well, I sure hope we don’t need to.

Roman: There you go.

Abe: Ah, thank you.

Roman: Mm-hmm. So how are eli and lani doing?

Abe: Well, eli’s got this great apartment in D.C. And valerie is helping with the twins, so you know, things are working out as well as can be expected. Me, I– I am missing them like crazy.

Roman: I know what you mean. You know, when I thought lucas and sami were gonna get married, I was hoping they would settle down here. And now, nothing’s settled and won’t be for a long time.

Abe: Yeah, who would’ve thought lucas would have kidnapped sami? You know, no one had any idea it was him.

Roman: Some people did– kate, for example.

Abe: Kate knew?

Roman: Yeah. She let ej go to prison for a crime her son did and she let lucas take my daughter, the woman he kidnapped, off to europe.

Abe: I am very sorry. Well, what does that mean for you and kate?

Roman: There is no “me and kate.” We’re done.

Kate: I was feeling a bit bitter, vindictive, so I used my power to make him suffer for what he did to me.

Paulina: Got your revenge, huh?

Kate: Yeah, I got my revenge, but it didn’t feel that good, you know? Because, deep down, I was actually really hurt.

Paulina: I hear you.

Kate: So it took me a while, you know, to– to open up my heart again.

[Sighs] And roman was so patient, and he was so kind. Now, it’S…

Paulina: Aw, kate. Well, I felt so bad when you told me he broke up with you, especially because you seemed– you two seemed so happy together. What’s wrong with that man?

Kate: Not a damn thing. It’s my fault.

Ej: When I heard about your miraculous pardon, I knew you’d show up here eventually.

Kristen: Huh. I didn’t come to see you. I came to offer my condolences to chad.

Ej: Well, you’ve come to the wrong place. Chad and the children have moved out.

Kristen: Huh. Well, then you obviously have even more empty bedrooms here than usual, so I’ll be moving back in.

Ej: [Laughs] Really?

Kristen: Mm-hmm.

Ej: You just decided this?

Kristen: Well, it’s better than crashing with jake and ava. And you know what, brother? This place is very big, and you and I don’t have to see each other.

Ej: Actually, I could envision us getting close again.

Kristen: Mm. And why would we do that?

Ej: So we could join forces. Vote gabi out once and for all and take back our father’s company.

Kristen: Hmm…

Ava: Who is gonna believe that I married jake on the same day that…

Gabi: Is there anybody that can prove that you didn’t marry him this morning?

Ava: [Sniffles] I guess not. We got robbed right as we bought the rings.

Gabi: Where? What jewelry store?

Ava: The one off the square.

Gabi: Okay, that’s perfect. That’s a block away from city hall. Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do–we’re gonna say it was a spur of the moment thing. You didn’t have rings. After you tied the knot, you went to go find rings to make it look authentic–

Ava: Okay, will you shut up? Please shut up. You’re talking about me being your partner in crime? Have you forgotten than the man that I love is lying here dead? Have you forgotten that I actually despise you?

Gabi: Okay. Forget about helping me, but maybe you’d like to help yourself before your life comes crashing down.

Ava: Oh, that better not be a threat. Moderate to severe eczema still disrupts my skin.

Sonny: Okay, so this is the lasagna that maggie made for jack and jennifer. Obviously, she didn’t know you and the kids were showing up, but I mean, it should be enough for you all.

Chad: I’m sure it will be. Actually, we’re not visiting. Kids and I are staying here now. I just moved us in.

Sonny: Oh. I mean, I guess I see why you wouldn’t want to be staying at the dimera house.

Chad: That’s not why we left.

Sonny: What happened?

Chad: Ej kicked us out.

Kristen: Oh, I couldn’t double-cross gabi. She’s been very good to me since I’ve been out.

Ej: [Chuckles] “Good to you” how?

Kristen: Well, guess who is in charge of basic black, hmm? Which is right where I want to be.

Ej: Mm-hmm, between chloe and brady.

Kristen: Oh, you know me so well.

Ej: I do. And that’s why I know you’ll want to hear me out.

Kristen: I’m listening.

Ej: I’ve just come into possession of chad and kate’s shares in the company.

Kristen: Ooh, how clever of you.

Ej: Mm-hmm, and if I could have yours–

Kristen: Oh, you could take over the world.

Ej: “We.” We could take over the world. You could keep your lofty position at basic black and move into your old suite here. Rachel could have the one right next to yours, assuming you win custody.

Kristen: Hold on, hold on. How do you have chad’s shares?

Ej: He betrayed me. It was the price he had to pay.

Kristen: Oh, and how am i supposed to trust you that you’re not gonna betray me?

Ej: Oh, I’d be a fool to do that. I need your shares. Do we have a deal?

Ava: I’m not gonna help you take on ej dimera.

Gabi: I wouldn’t make such rash statements if I were you. Now that you’re on your own since jake’s life was cut drastically short, you don’t have a dime. Without my help, your life is gonna fall apart.

Ava: And why would you help me?

Gabi: I’ve read the company bylaws, and I know that if you and jake were married, his shares would go directly to you. Think about the lovely dividends that you’d be receiving into your account every single month.

Ava: And why are so concerned with my finances?

Gabi: You’re right, no, there is something in it for me.

Ava: Surprise, surprise.

Gabi: Ej wouldn’t be able to generate enough power to kick me out as ceo.

Ava: Well, I’m actually surprised you did come up with this plan.

Gabi: Why?

Ava: Well, let’s say you’re right and I do get those shares. What’s to keep me from teaming up with ej to help him bury you?

Chanel: Okay, now that I have both of your attention, I want you to know how hard this decision was. But what hit me was that you and I never even would’ve been together if–

Allie: I’d just been honest with myself about my feelings for you.

Johnny: But we were together, chanel. We were.

Chanel: I know, and our time together was the most romantic few weeks of my life… until you broke my heart in a million pieces when I thought that you didn’t love me anymore.

Johnny: But that wasn’t me talking, chanel. You know that. Look, you are the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I never stopped loving you.

Chanel: I love you. I love both of you, but the person that I want to be with, hopefully for the rest of my life, is allie.

[Laughter]

Paulina: What I’m trying to say is, the two of us, we come from the same place. We both started out with nothing. Got beaten down by men who claimed they loved us. It’s hard to trust after that, and not just other people– ourselves too.

Kate: I appreciate you trying to let me off the hook.

Paulina: You have to let yourself off the hook if you expect roman to.

Kate: I don’t expect roman to.

Paulina: Abraham forgave me, didn’t he? I’ll never forget running into you at the hospital. You told me, “be patient. Don’t give up on the love between us.” Kate, you need to take your own advice. Don’t give up on roman now.

Abe: What can I say except I’m sorry?

Roman: Yeah, me too.

Abe: Do you think you might be willing to give kate another chance?

Roman: No way. After what she did?

Abe: You know, I said the same thing about paulina. I thought that I would never be able to trust her again, but now, we’re happily married. You know, people used to say you need to give happiness a chance. You were one of those people. I’m just saying.

Chad: Honestly, I don’t know if I can stand living in that house anymore. I mean, everywhere I looked, I– I saw abby. Getting dressed up for a night out, reading to the kids, goofing around with them. You know, the last time I saw her alive was in our bedroom. We were hoping we’d made a new baby.

Sonny: Jeez, man, I don’t know what to say.

Chad: Well, I never wanna see that room again.

Sonny: I’m really sorry, chad.

Chad: Ej gave me the push I needed to get us out of that house, and honestly, it’s a relief. The kids love this place, and I don’t know what we would do without jack and jennifer. You know, I just have no idea what we’re gonna do when they go back to boston.

Sonny: I have one idea.

Chad: Yeah?

Sonny: Yeah. There’s room in my house. You, thomas, charlotte. You can stay there as long as you need.

Gabi: If you team up with ej, those shares of yours? They’re not gonna be worth a red cent.

Ava: Oh, and why’s that?

Gabi: [Scoffs] You spent too much time playing domestic goddess with rafe. You’re slowing down.

Ava: I asked you a question.

Gabi: I know that you and jake didn’t get married. You double-cross me, and I will out you in a hot second. You will be left with less than nothing.

Ava: Oh, so you are threatening me?

Gabi: I can’t take what you don’t have. The way I see it, you’ve got two options–you work with me and we both win, or you screw with me and we both go down for the count. It’s your choice.

Kristen: Hmm, we most definitely do not have a deal.

Ej: You do realize I’m offering you quite a significant upgrade on your current situation.

Kristen: Uh-huh, but for how long? See, I can call the shots with gabi.

Ej: [Chuckles] Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure. See, your new friend is on the outs with jake because he’s been sleeping with ava. What does gabi feel about you sharing quarters with jake and ava? And since when do you have a close relationship with our brother, the grease monkey?

Kristen: I wouldn’t be such a snob if I were you. Have you forgotten that I took care of you during your vegetative state? And the thanks that I got from you was that–

[Secret panel creaking]

Ej: Rolf, what the hell were you doing in there?

Rolf: I needed somewhere to stay after I was pardoned. I didn’t want to impose.

Ej: And here I thought the house was feeling quite empty.

Rolf: I take it you haven’t heard about your brother?

Ej: Which one?

Rolf: The dead one?

Ej: [Sighs] You’re going to have to be more specific.

Rolf: Jake. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Kate: Well, I do appreciate the encouragement, but I don’t know if I can take myself off the hook, you know? And roman isn’t the only one who’s having a hard time forgiving me these days.

Paulina: Mm, who else?

Kate: Sami’s kids– my grandkids– allie and will.

Paulina: I don’t know will, but allie might be in a more forgiving place after she talks to my daughter.

Kate: Really? Why would that be?

Paulina: Right now, chanel is telling allie and johnny which twin she wants to be with.

Kate: [Gasps] Wow. Okay. Well, she might be in a better place then, or she might be in a worse place, depending how it goes.

Allie: Oh, chanel, I am so happy. Um, johnny, I’m really sorry.

Johnny: No, you’re not.

Chanel: See, this is why it took me so long to make a decision. I hated the idea of hurting either one of you.

Johnny: When you just touched my face before, don’t tell me you didn’t feel something between us.

Chanel: My feelings for you are still there. Why do you think I had to make a list of what I loved about both of you?

Johnny: [Scoffs] I take it allie had the longer list?

Chanel: Allie has just had more time than you have. We’re best friends, and we work together every day, and we still love each other, which is pretty amazing. And we’ve never really had a chance to see where things might go between us, and I think that we deserve that chance. Can you understand that?

Johnny: No, I can’T.

Ava: You can’t pull this off. The board of directors is gonna want to see a marriage license.

Gabi: I’ll take care of all that.

Ava: How?

Gabi: Money talks.

Ava: Yeah, jake just died this morning, and all you want to talk about is money.

Gabi: [Sighs] I want to talk about the future, okay? Yes, jake was not the love of my life, but I cared about him and he cared about me. And at the end, we were not right for each other, but I– I wanted to see him happy, and he wanted the same thing for me. And I’m not gonna be happy if I lose this job, and I know jake’s not gonna want to see you out on the street.

Ava: I need time to think about this.

Gabi: I’m sorry. It’s now or never, okay? What’s it gonna be?

Sonny: Look, I’m serious, okay? I already know uncle vic and maggie would love to have you and the kids at the house, and you already know how big it is.

Chad: Yeah, I do.

Sonny: But in the spirit of full transparency, I should probably let you know my brother’s already there, so…

Chad: Which brother?

Sonny: Alex.

Chad: You didn’t tell me he was coming to town.

Sonny: Oh, I didn’t know either. He just sort of showed up. Apparently, he’s not having a blast in phoenix or with joe or vic.

Chad: How long is he staying?

Sonny: Oh, he’s not going anywhere. Yeah, apparently he wants to work with me at titan.

Chad: And how do you feel about that?

Sonny: I don’t know yet. You know, he just sort of assumes that I’ll give him a job because there’s no reason not to.

Chad: I can think of a few reasons.

Sonny: Oh, yeah?

Chad: Yeah, you’d be working with your brother. In my book, that’s a really bad idea.

Kristen: Jake is–

Ej: He’s dead?

Rolf: He was shot by someone attempting to rob him. They got him to the hospital, but they couldn’t save his life.

Ej: I’d better go over there.

Kristen: Why? You don’t give a damn about jake.

Ej: Someone has to take charge, act as his next of kin.

Kristen: Oh, I get it. You don’t want anyone to beat you to those shares of stock he owns.

Ej: Owned, and of course I don’T.

Kristen: Oh, I guess you won’t be needing me anymore.

Ej: You rejected my offer. I expect you to be gone when I’m back.

Kristen: Well, he wasn’t what I’d call “prostrated by grief.”

Rolf: Unlike you?

Kristen: I barely knew jake, but I didn’t hate him on sight like the rest of my family! Okay, I’m not racing ej to the hospital to take advantage of that poor guy’s death.

Rolf: Perhaps you should be.

Kristen: [Sighs]

Allie: It sounds like you’re not accepting chanel’s decision.

Chanel: You promised you would.

Johnny: You’re right, I did. You’re a lucky woman.

Allie: I know.

[Tender music]

Johnny: You be good to her.

Allie: I will.

Johnny: Uh, okay. Well, I got to go. See you around.

Paulina: Mm, nothing from chanel yet, so I can’t go home. Oh, neither can abe, so he’s hanging out at the pub. Hmm, speaking of my husband, if he were to run for a higher office–say governor– could he count on your support?

Kate: Oh, well, he’d be a hell of a lot better than the cracked clown we have in there now, wouldn’t he?

Paulina: So you would support him?

Kate: Of course I’d support him.

Paulina: Oh.

Kate: Is he thinking of running?

Paulina: Let’s just say I planted the seed.

Kate: Hmm, actually, you did the same for me.

Paulina: I did?

Kate: Yeah. I’ve been thinking about what you had to say, and I think I’m gonna go over to the pub, and I’m gonna talk to roman.

Paulina: Oh, I’m so glad. I’m so glad; you go ahead. Go get your man, honey.

Kate: Thank you.

[Laughter]

Paulina: Oh! Mmm.

Roman: Well, you know what, abe? My situation is a whole lot different than yours was.

Abe: Why? Both kate and paulina were keeping a secret to protect their children.

Roman: Yeah, what about my kid?

Abe: You don’t really believe that lucas would put sami in danger?

Roman: Hell yes! He kidnapped her, abe.

Abe: Well, he used bad judgment. I mean, there’s no denying that, but I think that he did it because he loved her so much.

Roman: You know what? That’s what kate thought, and it’s not like I’ve been a great judge of character lately.

Abe: And why would you say that?

Roman: Well, for one, my ex-wife and two of my grandkids were possessed by the devil, and I didn’t have a clue. And you know who’s making your chowder right now? Clyde weston, the felon I vouched for when my niece took off on a trip around the world. And soon after I hired him, he bought some stolen jewelry, got locked up for abigail’s murder. And now, his old partner in crime is being let out of jail by the governor.

Abe: To call it a rough year would be an understatement.

Roman: Yeah. Do you have any idea why the governor would let somebody like orpheus out of jail early?

Abe: Wish I did.

Roman: Yeah, well, at least he can’t run again in november.

Abe: Paulina thinks I should run.

Roman: For governor?

Abe: She even invited mitchell to dinner. Had this big plan to get him to endorse me.

Roman: [Chuckles] I assume that was before he pardoned a whole lot of people like orpheus.

Abe: Thereby making his seal of approval totally worthless, which means, among other things, that paulina’s big plan is not going to work out.

Roman: Yeah. Well, there are not a whole lot of things working out lately, so tell you what. I’m gonna check on your dinner.

Abe: [Sighs]

Rolf: I live by one creed: “What would stefano do?” Hmm? In this situation, there is but one choice to make.

Kristen: You really think you can do it?

Rolf: Yes, with your help.

Kristen: [Sighs]

Kayla: Oh!

Ej: I just heard about my brother.

Kayla: Yeah, I’m so sorry.

Ej: [Sighs] He was so young. We had gotten quite close recently.

Kayla: I did not know that.

Ej: When you release his body, I’d like to have him buried in the dimera crypt.

Kayla: Well, there’s some paperwork that needs to be filled out by his next of kin. I was guessing that was vivian.

Ej: She’s a convicted felon. I don’t think the hospital wants to enter into any sort of agreement with her.

Kayla: Good point. Well, how do you suggest?

Ej: Myself. I am the head of the family now.

Kayla: Okay. I’ll get the forms.

Gabi: I see the vultures are already circling.

Ej: Yes, so it seems.

Kayla: I would definitely read it over before you sign it.

Ej: Thank you.

Gabi: What is that?

Kayla: It’s forms that need to be signed by jake’s next of kin.

Gabi: Wouldn’t that be his wife?

Ej: Jake didn’t have a wife.

Gabi: Until this morning.

Ava: [Sniffles] Your hand is so cold. Hmm. This morning seems like a dream.

[Sniffles]

[Chuckles] We were so happy when we bought these.

[Somber music]

Abe: Not for too much longer, I hope.

Kate: No, I don’t think so.

Abe: No?

Kate: No. So I thought I’d come by and talk to roman, you know? Is he around?

Abe: Um…

[Chuckles]

Kate: Hey.

Roman: Hi.

Kate: Um, I wonder if you have a minute to talk.

Johnny: [Chuckles] Hello, paulina.

Paulina: Oh, johnny!

Johnny: You’re safe to go home now. Chanel announced her decision.

Paulina: From the look on your face, you’re not here to celebrate.

Johnny: [Chuckles] No, definitely not. She, um– she wants to be with allie.

Allie: I am the happiest woman in the world right now.

Chanel: No, I am.

Allie: Dupree, I want you so bad, but it just feels a little bit weird to celebrate when johnny’s miserable.

Chanel: Yeah, I know what you mean, but how long do you think we should wait before we, you know, celebrate?

Allie: I don’t know. It feels like we’ve kind of been waiting forever.

Chanel: Yeah and the whole point of being together is to really be together.

Allie: When you’re right, you’re right.

Chanel: I think we’ve waited long enough.

[Tender music]

Chad: I shouldn’t have warned you about working with alex. I’m sure he’s nothing like ej.

Sonny: No, you were honest. You know, I get along with alex just fine. It’s just, you know, I’ve never been my big brother’s boss before.

Chad: Tony, what’s going on? What? Are you sure? Yeah, thanks for letting me know.

Sonny: What’d he say? Is everything okay?

Chad: It’s my, brother jake. He was shot.

Sonny: What? Is he okay?

Chad: He’s dead.

Gabi: Oh, you haven’t heard? Ava just told me that she and jake got married.

Ej: Bloody hell. When did this happen?

Ava: If you’re talking about me and jake, we were married this morning.

Kayla: I’m sorry, ava. I did not know.

Ava: No, you know, everything was happening so fast, it didn’t even occur to me to tell you, but jake and I were husband and wife when he was…

Kayla: Well, I’m sorry to bring this up now, but there are some forms that need to be signed by jake’s legal next of kin.

Rolf: Are you ready to go?

Kristen: Wait, wait, wait. Rolf, rolf, rolf, rolf, not until you tell me what sort of help you need from me.

Rolf: There’s no time for explanations! We must act now!

Kristen: [Sighs] I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Roman: I don’t have time to talk, ’cause I just found out my broiler is on the fritz, and to be honest, I don’t have a hell of a lot to say to you.

Abe: Well, don’t give up hope. He’ll come around.

Kate: That’s what paulina said to me.

Abe: Yeah, well, she’s a wise woman. You know, I did talk to roman and I told him he should give you another chance.

Kate: Well, thanks, but I doubt that he’s going to do that.

Abe: I don’t doubt it at all. Just give it some time.

Kate: [Sighs]

Paulina: This one’s on me.

Johnny: You didn’t have to do that.

Paulina: No, no, I wanted to. Between us, I was pulling for you, kid.

[Tender music]

Chanel: I love you so much, horton.

Allie: I love you too.

Sonny: Chad, I don’t know what to say.

Chad: Yeah, me neither. I mean, I wasn’t that close with him, but he was abby’s friend. Now, both of them?

Gabi: Nice try, ej, but no cigar.

Ej: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Gabi: Sure you do. You were about to sign those next of kin papers. Now you can’t get your hands on jake’s shares of dimera stock.

Ej: Hmm. Don’t be so sure. This marriage came out of nowhere and is awfully convenient. If you don’t think I’ll get to the bottom of this, then you don’t know me very well.

Kayla: Oh, the orderlies are here to pick up jake’s body and take it to the morgue. When you’ve made your funeral arrangements, he’ll be released to you.

Ava: Funeral arrangements, on my wedding day.

[Suspenseful music]

Rolf: Ah, jake. It is you. Ready for your next adventure? [Chuckles] Shall we?

Kristen: [Sighs] I really hope you didn’t lose your touch while you were in the slammer.

Allie: What?

Tony: “Simple Simon met a pieman going to the fair”?

Allie: I’m sorry, do you need help?

Tony: No, no, I’m sorry. No, it’s just a silly old nursery rhyme.

Allie: Oh.

Tony: You know, they used to use it to amuse the young folk in my day, but that was long before your “tic-tacs.”

Allie: You mean tiktok?

Tony: Mmm. I’m almost tempted to recite “hickory dickory dock,” but I’ll spare you. So, where is your partner in this patisserie?

Allie: It’s just me today. I’m actually trying to answer the age-old question, cherry or peach pie? I’m taking kind of a census. And chanel is taking a personal day, she actually has a very important choice to make of her own.

Tony: More important than pie? Oh, that’s hard to believe.

Allie: I know. Believe it. I don’t know about simple simon, but I’m hoping that simon says she makes the right choice.

Johnny: Forget about simon, johnny says she’s gonna choose me.

Tony: Ah.

Chanel: Why is this so hard? Giovanni or horton? Horton or giovanni?

Paulina: In my experience, when a girl is talking into her coffee, it’s usually a boy that she’s brewing over.

Chanel: A boy and a girl.

Paulina: Oh. You still haven’t made a choice between allie and johnny?

Chanel: I told them I would come up with a decision by today. But I don’t know what to do, mama.

Paulina: Oh, well, baby, mama’s here. And she’s on the case.

Chad: Rafe. I just read “the intruder–” “the intruder!” And found out that sarah horton was brought in for questioning. Apparently, she was at the mansion the night abby was murdered. Yeah, if you wouldn’t mind giving me a call back please at your earliest convenience, I would really like to know what the hell is going on and why my wife’s murderer isn’t behind bars yet. Thank you!

Chanel: Now, this wasn’t some touristy place full of americans, no, it was full of locals ready to hate him. Now, johnny could’ve grabbed me and we could’ve run out of there, but he didn’T. He didn’t hesitate for a second. He belted out that love song in his best broken italian. He did it at full volume and with his whole heart. And he won over the crowd. And me. And he wanted to show how he felt, and he was fearless.

Paulina: Mmm. Fearless. Romantic. Speaks italian. Loves nat king cole. Loves my very special and beautiful daughter. This young man sounds like a keeper to me, chanel.

Chanel: Yeah. He does.

Ej: Do I look like I’m joking? And, frankly, you don’t deserve to live in this house that father built. While it was under your care and much to my horror, you allowed this house to fall into gabriella’s greedy hands. Ej: I’m sure it’s not news to you that chad was willing to let me rot in statesville for a crime I did not commit.

Tony: Listen. I understand that miscarriage of justice and you have every right to be upset about being wronged. But I truly believe this is not the time to be seeking retribution. This man, he just lost his wife.

Chad: You are not seriously comparing the two. My wife was stabbed to death, ej, murdered in this house. I found her upstairs. You–your wife walked out on you! Again! All you have to do is wait. I’m sure sami’s crazy ass is gonna come walking through that door–

Ej: I did not take abigail away from you, damn it! What happened was awful. Tragic. But it had nothing to do with me. What happened to me on the other hand, had everything to do with you!

Chanel: This is too much. I need to take a break. It’s just no matter what I choose, I have to hurt someone that I really care about. And I might break apart a life-long friendship. They’re twins, mama! I can’t–I can’t take that away from them.

Paulina: Baby, the heart wants what the heart wants. Whatever choice you make, whoever gets hurt, they will recover, my darling. Johnny and allie are both young and resourceful. Stop worrying about them. Take care of you.

Chanel: The other day, allie and I, we went for a walk in the square and we saw this little girl who’d skinned her knee and I looked over to allie and she was looking at the little girl and the look on their faces, it was the same.

Paulina: She’s an empath.

Chanel: Right. Right. It was like she really felt that little girl’s pain, really felt it. Like I could tell, I could tell. And it was like she wanted to take some of it for herself so that the little girl could feel better faster. And of course she went running right over to her to comfort her.

Paulina: Mmm. It’s like I’ve always said, it’s good to find the helpers and keep them close.

Chanel: And then on that same walk, we saw this old man who had lost his wallet and allie helped him look all over for it. And when he finally found it, he was so relieved, so happy. And I looked at allie and she, she was just as happy as he was. It’s like she’s so connected to this world and everyone in it. How could I not wanna be connected to her?

Paulina: Yeah. I get it, I get it. And I can see why you’re struggling. I hear it in your voice how much you love them both so much. They are very lucky to have you in their lives. Somebody who appreciates them the way you do.

Chanel: Yeah, yeah, but now I have to choose just one.

Johnny: Well, this one is richer.

Alex: I didn’t want business to come in between us. That’s all. So I figured I’d step out. I wasn’t ready for another blistering summer in arizona. I wanted to head east, come to salem, and see some of the family. Where the hell is everybody, anyway?

Bonnie: Sonny? Is your da– oh. [Laughs] Oh, um, who do we have here?

Bonnie: [Gasps] Alex. Oh, my gosh. It’s so nice to meet you. I’m b–

Steve: Why would mitchell go along with something like this?

Justin: Because he’s corrupt. He might as well just hang a sign that says “bribes accepted.”

Steve: Didn’t even try to hide it. But I’m less interested in how orpheus managed to get out than in what you plan to do about it.

Justin: What do you mean?

Steve: You know what I mean. The man responsible for adrienne’s death is free. Are you planning to go after him?

Kayla: Nicole.

Nicole: Hey, kayla.

Kayla: What happened?

Nicole: It’s nothing serious. I just twisted my ankle.

Eric: It was hardly nothing. A guy attacked her in the park.

Kayla: A random attacker?

Nicole: He wanted my purse.

Eric: He pulled a gun on her.

Kayla: That must have been terrifying.

Nicole: Well, thankfully, eric came when he did.

Kayla: Don’t tell me you fought off an attacker.

Eric: No, I just talked to him. Just wish I was able to stop him.

Nicole: Hopefully they’ll catch him soon. And if I know rafe, he won’t stop until he does.

Jada: Should we start canvassing the park? See if anyone has run into this guy?

Rafe: Yeah, I’m working on getting a photo right now. He was at the brady pub. Hopefully the security camera got a good angle on him.

Jada: Do you know what he looks like?

Rafe: Yeah, I got a pretty good description of him from my wife.

Jada: Your wife?

Rafe: Nicole is the one who was attacked.

Jada: Oh, man, I’m sorry. Is she okay?

Rafe: Yeah, she’s gonna be okay. I mean, she’s pretty rattled. The guy threw her to the ground, and she sprained her ankle.

Jada: I’m sorry. Where is she?

Rafe: She’s at the hospital right now, getting checked out.

Jada: By herself?

Rafe: No, she’s– she’s with her ex-husband.

Jada: Ex-husband?

Rafe: It’s not like that. He just happened to be at the scene. Would you just focus on finding the guy?

Rafe: Oh.

Jada: What is it?

Rafe: I just got a report of shots fired.

Justin: You’re worried I’m going to what? Murder orpheus?

Steve: It’s not exactly a big leap. Do I need to remind you what you did the last time you were in a room with him? You pulled a gun on him while he was in police custody.

Justin: Mm-hmm. And if I remember correctly, you convinced me to turn the gun over to you so you could do the deed yourself.

Steve: That’s right.

Justin: But you were just playing me in order to get the gun out of my hand.

Steve: I was trying to save you from throwing your life away.

Justin: I could have made that decision on my own.

Steve: No. Not in that moment. You were grieving. You weren’t in your right mind.

Justin: I’d say I was pretty clear.

Steve: You see? This is what I’m talking about. It sounds like you feel cheated. Like you wish you had pulled that trigger.

Justin: [Sighs]

Steve: So now that orpheus is out, I need to know, I need to make sure you’re not planning to finish the job.

Orpheus: I would like to know the answer to that myself.

Kayla: Okay, there you go. I think you just have a bad sprain. If you stay off of it and rest it and ice it for a few days, it should be good as new. You’ll be on your feet.

Eric: But for now, she just needs to rest, right?

Kayla: Yep.

Eric: Anything else treatment-wise?

Kayla: Nope. She can just use over-the-counter pain meds, and if things get worse, you can call me, and I’ll prescribe something stronger.

Nicole: Okay. I should be fine. Now that you wrapped it nice and tight, it feels pretty good.

Kayla: Glad to hear it.

Nicole: Although, what would make me feel better is if rafe gets that maniac who did this to me off the streets.

Jada: Where were shots fired?

Rafe: Outside the jewelry store off the square. Let’s go.

Ava: Look. Look, I don’t know what’s going on in your life, but… you don’t need to shoot me. All right? I don’t give a damn about having you arrested. I’m no friend of the cops. Okay? I just need to get an ambulance here… to help my boyfriend. You don’t want him to die.

Greg: Just put the phone down!

Ava: Okay, just go. Just go, all right? I’m not gonna tell anybody what I saw.

Greg: Yeah, nice try. But as soon as I turn my head, you’re calling 911 and I’ve got the entire police force after me. Then they’ll lock this whole town down, and I’m stuck. I can’t have that. I’m sorry. But at least you get to be with your boyfriend.

Rafe: Police! Drop the gun!

Jada: He said drop it now!

Greg: [Coughs] Migraine hits hard, so u hit back with ubrelvy

Orpheus: Sorry to drop by unannounced. But I figured you gentlemen might take exception to my release.

Justin: I wonder why you’d think that.

Steve: What do you want?

Orpheus: Well, as you know, I’m not one to sit back and let things happen, so rather than wait for you to appear at my doorstep, I thought I’d come by, say hi, and get a sense of your intentions.

Steve: Our intentions?

Orpheus: Namely, justin, are you intending to come after me?

Justin: You think I’d tell you if I was?

Orpheus: Actually, yes. You’ve always been a very straightforward guy. You’ve never hidden your animosity towards me. Although it’s based on a misunderstanding.

Justin: Misunderstanding? You killed my wife.

Orpheus: Accidentally. Look… my hands may not be the cleanest in the world, but I did not intend to hurt adrienne. It was simply the wrong place at the wrong time.

Justin: You cold son of a bitch.

Steve: If you’re trying to make things better here, it’s not working.

Orpheus: I’m just stating facts.

Justin: The facts are, you ran adrienne of the road, and you were too busy framing maggie to call for help.

Orpheus: I… I don’t deny that I was in the midst of tying off loose ends.

Steve: Is that supposed to excuse your actions?

Orpheus: No. No. I’m not making any excuses. And for what it’s worth, I’m sorry for your loss. Truly. But I’ve gotta get on with my life, and I’m here to find out if I should expect retaliation from either of you.

Justin: When I lost adrienne, I really didn’t think I had anything left except to kill you. But when steve convinced me that I shouldn’t blow you away, I realized that even though you had taken adrienne away from me, I still had a lot to live for. I have four incredible sons, a beautiful granddaughter, and I was lucky enough to find love again.

Orpheus: I heard you’d remarried.

Justin: Mm-hmm. And if I had killed you, I would have been tossing all of that away. I promise you, your miserable life isn’t worth one second of my time with the people that I love.

Orpheus: So we’re good.

Justin: No. No. We are far from good. I eagerly anticipate the day you start to rot in hell. But I am not going after you because you’re already dead to me. It’s good to see you again, steve.

[Tense music]

Sonny: Whoa, whoa, alex. What the hell are you doing?

Bonnie: Okay, I–I’m sorry. I didn’t–I really didn’t wanna leave your mother in that hotel room.

Alex: But you did. And she died.

Bonnie: No, I– I just was already in so deep. And you know what? It was her idea, you know. She came up with the idea for me to pose as adrienne.

Alex: No, I knew you were just caught as an innocent in the mix of all of this, right?

Bonnie: Well, no. It just– I never thought I’d just–

Alex: You would leave a trail of bodies behind?

Sonny: Alex, just put the tie down.

Bonnie: I am really sorry. I am sorry. I know I’ve made about a million and a half mistakes, but the truth is, I just was desperate to stay out of prison.

Alex: [Laughs] Relax. The look on your two faces. Are you kidding me? Did you really think I was gonna do something with this? The hell do I look like? A necktie killer?

Alex: I know what you thought. I just wanted to see how you’d react. Look, bonnie, I’m not happy about what happened to my mother. But I do know she wasn’t a saint. So I’d be willing to bet that whatever trouble found her, she put herself in that position.

Bonnie: [Sighs] Then you really don’t hate me?

Alex: Dad says you make him happy, so even if you’re the worst person in the world, how can I be mad at you?

Bonnie: Oh, thanks. I think.

Sonny: And, I mean, what you did to sonny’s mom was way worse, and this guy was able to forgive you, so why the hell shouldn’t I?

Bonnie: [Chuckles] Right?

Alex: What are you waiting for? Bring it in.

[Bassy jazz music]

Rafe: He’s dead. Call it in, hunter.

Jada: Okay.

[Phone beeps] This is hunter. We got two shootings in the park. Perp is deceased. One victim, critical condition. Send an ambulance.

Rafe: His pulse is weak, but it’s there.

Ava: He’s lost so much blood, but I can’t get it to stop. I’m putting pressure, but it won’t go.

Rafe: Detective hunter’s calling in the emts, so they’ll be here shortly.

Ava: How could this happen? How could this happen? I can’t believe this happened to jake.

Rafe: It’s okay. He’s gonna be okay.

[Tense music]

Alex: [Exhales]

Bonnie: [Laughs] Whoa. Whoa! Oh, my–ooh. I’m spinning.

[Laughs] I mean, we went from potential murder to shirtless hug in a matter of seconds.

Alex: I said what I needed to say. I got it out of my system. I don’t believe in holding on to bad feelings. It creates negative energy.

Bonnie: Yeah, well, that hug had plenty of positive energy.

Sonny: Yeah, at least he toweled off before he hugged you.

Alex: Well, I was indulging in a nice swim, working on my breaststroke when I greeted my brother here.

Bonnie: Can’t blame him for wanting to take advantage of the pool, sonny. I mean, he obviously likes to keep in shape.

Alex: Oh, thank you for noticing.

Bonnie: I mean, really. Look at those abs.

Alex: Ah.

Bonnie: You could grate cheese off those.

Alex: Ah, well–

Kayla: But listen, nicole, you might think about making an appointment with marlena. Talk this out. I mean, everything seems okay right now, but then, you know, ptsd could hit when you least expect it. Okay?

Eric: Is everything okay?

Kayla: Yeah. I gotta get going. I’m sorry, I have a incoming gunshot victim.

Kayla: Is this our gunshot victim?

Jada: He’s lost a lot of blood.

Kayla: Okay. We’ll do everything we can. All right. Don’t see an exit wound anywhere. We need to get him to surgery.

Ava: Okay, kayla, he has to make it. Please, please tell me–

Justin: Well, it is refreshing. So alex, what prompted this visit to salem?Pted this visit I mean, not that I mind.

Sonny: Well, apparently it’s not just a visit. Apparently, alex was thinking about staying for a little while.

Justin: No kidding.

Justin: So what about the business in phoenix?

Alex: Dad, I needed a little break, to be honest with you. And I thought it would be nice to just see some family, hang out by the pool… see uncle vic, aunt maggie.

Justin: Well, they’re gonna be thrilled to see you. So are we talking about a few weeks?

Alex: Well, that’s what i thought originally, but then after seeing how relaxing this place is, I might just take the summer off.

Sonny: [Chuckles] Really?

Alex: What? It beats hanging out in a blistering arizona desert. And I get to spend a couple more months with my baby bro. So we are gonna go work out. You are gonna show me around town, take me to some of those little bars you like so much.

Sonny: Right. Yeah. That sounds awesome.

Alex: Good.

Sonny: But, um… you know, titan actually has me pretty busy right now, so–

Alex: Ah, yeah. Maybe I’ll come work with you.

Orpheus: So…

Steve: Well, let’s hear it.

Orpheus: Am I supposed to know what that means?

Steve: You can save the innocent act for someone who doesn’t know you. And we both know you got that pardon for a reason.

Orpheus: I don’t know what you’re implying, steve. I did my best to be a model prisoner, and now that I’m out, I’m just trying to keep my nose clean.

Steve: Sure you are.

Orpheus: Which reminds me, I need to find myself some gainful employment. You happen to know if they’re still hiring here?

Steve: You wanna work at the brady pub?

Orpheus: Well, my old pal clyde works here. Word is, roman’s in the second chance business.

Steve: You think you’re only on a second chance?

Orpheus: Hmm. Sometimes it takes a few for it to stick. Look, I… I know I’ve caused my share of pain, especially to your family. But all that’s behind me now. Instead of infamous villain orpheus, I could just be… milo harp, short order cook.

[Chuckles]

Steve: Huh. Well, if you really want that kind of work, there are a lot of restaurants outside of salem that you could choose from. I mean, why stay here where everyone despises you?

Orpheus: Oh, maybe I like it here.

Steve: Mm. Well, you’ll never be able to live down your past. So if you’re really serious about cleaning up your act, why don’t you go someplace else? Get a fresh start.

Orpheus: Well, maybe you’re right. Maybe that makes more sense. I’ve always wanted to live out west.

Steve: How far west?

Orpheus: Well… they say seattle’s beautiful this time of year. Hey, while I’m there, maybe i could look in on your kids. What are their names again? Stephanie, uh, joey, and… tripp?

Eric: Easy does it. And remember, small steps.

Nicole: Okay. I know what I’m doing.

Eric: All right. I’m just making sure you don’t stumble.

Rafe: Hey.

Nicole: Uh, actually it’s just a sprain, but I’ll be fine.

Nicole: Well, you know what? Kayla wrapped it up nice and tight, so it’s good. And I’m working on my crutch skills.

[Chuckles] Um, listen, any– any luck on finding the guy who attacked me?

Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, we found him.

Eric: Oh, that’s great. Is he in custody?

Rafe: No. No, he’s dead.

Nicole: What?

Rafe: Yeah. We came upon him. I mean, detective hunter and i came upon him, and he was in the midst of committing another robbery.

Eric: Who else was he trying to rob?

Rafe: Ava.

Nicole: Oh, is she all right?

Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, he was– he was going to shoot her, but detective hunter shot him first.

Eric: Oh, I hate to hear the loss of human life. We should be grateful that nobody else is gonna get hurt.

Rafe: Yeah, unfortunately, that’s not the case, ’cause, um… as it happens, jake was with ava and… before we got to the scene, the gunman shot him.

Nicole: Jake?

Rafe: Mm-hmm.

Eric: Kayla’s patient, the gunshot victim.

Rafe: Yeah. He’s being rushed into surgery as we speak.

Nicole: Is he…

Rafe: We don’t know.

Nicole: Oh, my god.

Rafe: Yeah. I’m just glad you’re okay.

Nicole: Yeah.

Eric: Well, looks like you can handle things from here.

Rafe: Yeah, listen. Before you go, I just wanna say… I’m sorry for how I acted, you know, at the park.

Eric: It’s okay. You already apologized.

Rafe: Yeah. Thanks again for bringing nicole to the hospital.

Nicole: Yeah, thank you, eric.

Eric: You’re welcome. Just remember, take it easy. Rest well.

Nicole: Oh.

Jada: Is there anything I can get you?

Ava: No. Thanks.

Jada: You sure?

Ava: Look, I’m fine, all right? I’m not the one who just took a bullet.

Jada: Ava, I know we just met, but my father used to work at this hospital, and from what I hear, they are the best. Jake is in good hands.

Ava: Yeah.

Jada: You wanna talk about it?

Ava: Look, I don’t know what you’ve heard about me, but this isn’t the first time I’ve seen somebody shot in front of me. All right? The life I grew up in, it’s pretty much a regular occurrence. But seeing someone that you care about… bleeding out in front of you on the ground, that is something that you never get used to.

Jada: Sounds like you love him very much.

Ava: Yeah, for the first time in my life, I finally thought that I could… hold on to the person I love. But, um… I will not be weak.

[Somber music]

Jada: You’re not weak. You’re just scared. Listen, why don’t I get you a bottle of water, maybe a granola bar?

Ava: I’m not hungry.

Jada: Jake might be in surgery for a while, and you need to keep your strength up.

Ava: Okay. All right, thank you.

Alex: Unless you don’t want me to.

Sonny: No. No, actually, I don’t have a problem with it, but, I mean, didn’t you just say you wanted to take the summer off?

Alex: I did say that.

Sonny: So then why don’t you just stay in phoenix, you know? Tough it out in the twins.

Alex: Yeah, I don’t wanna tough it out with the twins. I told you I’m sick and tired of knocking heads with joe and vic.

Justin: Knocking heads? I didn’t know the three of you were having issues.

Alex: Dad, we just have different ways of thinking, especially when it comes to business.

Sonny: And what about you and me?

Alex: What about you and me? You and me have always been good. You’ve always gotten me. Am I wrong? You get me.

Sonny: Actually, I think I do.

Alex: Well, then there you go. Sonny, think about it. Kiriakis brothers working together again.

[Makes blast noise] How awesome is that gonna be? Think about it.

Jada: [Sighs]

Eric: Jada. You okay?

Jada: Eric. I, uh…

Eric: Hey. What’s wrong?

Jada: I killed a man in the line of duty today.

Eric: I heard. It must be very upsetting.

Jada: That’s, uh– it shouldn’t have been, though. It shouldn’t be. He was about to shoot that woman. I-I know I did the right thing. I did the only thing. I–it’s my job. But still…

Eric: Life and death. That’s–it’s a heavy situation.

Jada: And it’s never gonna get easier. And to be honest… I don’t think it ever will be.

Eric: Well, from where I stand, you should be proud of yourself. You saved somebody’s life today.

[Soft somber music]

Nicole: How badly was jake hurt? Is he– is he gonna make it?

Rafe: Um… I don’t know.

Nicole: How’s ava holding up?

Rafe: Not good.

Nicole: I had no idea they were so close.

Rafe: Yeah. I didn’t either. But now, seeing how broken up she was, I… can tell it’s really serious between them.

[Somber music]

Ava: Kayla. Kayla, how’s jake? Is–is his surgery over?

Kayla: There was no surgery, ava.

Ava: W-what are you talking about? That’s where you said you were taking him.

Kayla: Jake coded on the way to the operating room.

Ava: He coded?

Kayla: His heart stopped.

Ava: Oh, god.

Kayla: We took him to the er. We tried to do everything we could. The trauma team, they really tried, but they could not get his heart beating again.

Ava: No. No, no, no. No.

Kayla: Ava, I’m sorry, but jake didn’t make it.

Kristen: Well, so do I. And as I said, I’m in charge here now. And if you don’t believe me, give gabi a call.

Sonny: We have to talk.

Gabi: Now is not a good time, sonny.

Sonny: This is an emergency.

Gabi: Is ari okay?

Sonny: Oh, she’s fine. She’s fine. She’s at camp. This is about business.

Sonny: Okay. Well, I had my eye on a very small but very promising company out in london. And the deal was all but closed until someone swooped in and scooped it out from underneath me.

Gabi: And?

Sonny: Oh, and… I think that person was you.

Jake: Ava, I don’t like that you feel that I’m not serious about this relationship. And I really don’t want you feeling like an also-ran, because you’re not. And I already told you gabi… is not the love of my life. And gwen certainly wasn’t either, but… maybe you could be. Maybe you are.

Ava: You’re saying you wanna marry me?

Jake: I’m saying that… I want you to believe as much as I do that I’m serious about this relationship and we have a future.

Kristen: Well, I just left gabi’s office, and she approved of my new position.

Sarah: But it’s not.

[Maggie exhales] It’s not, mom. During… one of my hallucinations… I threatened chanel dupree with a knife. What if I did the same to abigail? What if I stabbed her, thinking that she was kristen?

Maggie: May I ask you something? Have you been fully cooperating with the police?

Maggie: And has anyone accused you of a crime?

Gwen: No. I meant about sarah being brought in for questioning about my sister’s murder.

Xander: She wasn’t brought in–she went there voluntarily. She wants to help the police figure out who killed her cousin.

Gwen: The story implied she’s a suspect.

Xander: It’s the “intruder.” I’m surprised they didn’t imply that she’s an alien from outer space. Just ignore what you read, gwen. Sarah’s innocent.

Gwen: Are you sure? She’s been suffering from hallucinations.

Xander: How’d you know about that?

Gwen: Because she told me when she came to visit me in the prison. Is it true that she sees kristen everywhere wanting to kill her?

Xander: You have some nerve bringing that up when it’s all your bloody fault.

Gwen: You’re right. And if I’m the reason that… sarah snapped, causing her to kill abigail, I just would feel… so terrible. I mean, I’m free, and… my sister’s dead, and… I just wish I could have been there. You know, maybe I could have helped or done something. And I would–I would have helped her. I would’ve tried to save her. I would’ve done everything in my power to save her.

Nicole: Ow.

Eric: Are you okay?

Gabi: Jake and ava? I admit at first I was angry, disgusted at the thought of that skank being in his bed. But the more I thought about it, more I realized that jake and I were never really right for each other.

Gabi: Just because we didn’t work as a couple–I mean, in business we make a great team. And besides, he isn’t the only one that’s moved on. I am with shin now.

Chloe: Even if I do, you know that she’s not gonna quit. It’s only gonna get worse. Ugh! Maybe I should just resign.

Jake: No, they gave us a great deal. I mean, I can’t believe he wanted us to have it so badly he threw in in the wedding bands for free. It’s gotta be a good omen, right?

Ava: Listen, if gwen gives me any trouble, I’ll deal with her. Right now… I wanna enjoy being engaged.

Brady: I don’t care.

Chloe: Governor’s emergency press conference? Wonder what’s going on.

Mitchell: In addition, I am also issuing a full pardon to kristen dimera.

[Dramatic music]

Brady: Look. I want you to double the security at the inn, at my parents’ house, and the office. Then hire more guards, damn it. Just a–

Eric: Hey. Hey, whoa! Brady, it’s just me.

Brady: Sorry. Listen, just call me when everything’s in place, okay? All right. Sorry.

Eric: Yeah. You don’t really think kristen’s gonna come at you like that, do you?

Brady: Eric, I don’t know what she’s going to do, but I know that I’m not gonna get a hell of a lot of warning.

Jake: [Groaning and wincing]

Ava: Oh, oh. Oh, ooh, ooh.

Jake: Ugh, damn it. Oh!

Ava: Jake, another spasm? Hey, hey, hey–

Jake: [Groans] This happens every time I sleep on this air mattress. Every damn time.

Kristen: Oh, get over your tired self. Try sleeping on a cot in statesville.

Ava: She’s up.

Kristen: [Yawning] Oh, my god. [Inhales deeply] You woke me up in the middle of such a lovely dream.

[Sighs] And thanks to the enlightened governor, I’m gonna make those dreams come true.

[Sighing contentedly]

Jake: [Groaning sigh]

Kristen: Mmm.

Shin: Okay. You know I love you too.

[Soft tense music]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Gabi: I hope you didn’t end that call on my account.

Shin: Oh, I’m sorry. Did I wake you? Some coffee?

Gabi: Sure. And then you can tell me who you were exchanging I love yous with.

Nicole: Pardoned? From the governor?

Chloe: That’s right.

Nicole: How the hell did she pull that off?

Chloe: [Sighs] I have no idea. Maybe she put on her governor mask and decided to hold a press conference.

Nicole: Oh, brady. Have you talked to him? Is he all right?

Brady: Look, I don’t– I don’t want to overreact.

Eric: I’m not sure it’s possible to overreact when it comes to kristen.

Brady: [Chuckles dryly]

Eric: Hey, what about rachel?

Brady: [Sighs]

Brady: Rachel. That’s what worries me the most.

Chloe: A couple of hours before we found out about the pardon, kristen had called brady from statesville asking if he would bring rachel there to visit her, and he said “no.” And then–

Nicole: Oh. And then?

Chloe: Well, she just kept pushing him, and so he just finally told her that rachel’s still in california with theresa and tate.

Nicole: Oh. So now kristen knows where rachel is.

Brady: So I talked to theresa. And she’s going to talk to shane about security just in case kristen plans on going down there, but that might not be the first thing on her agenda.

Eric: Do you think you know what that might be?

Brady: [Sighs] Eric, the only thing that I am sure about is that I never know what the hell kristen’s thinking.

Nicole: So is brady beefing up security?

Chloe: Yeah, that’s what he’s doing right now. But, you know, we could have all the security in the world.

Nicole: And it’s kristen. Mm-hmm. And after everything she’s done, I mean, if she could still get a full pardon, who knows what else she could get away with?

Brady: [Groans and yawns] Excuse me. Yeah, I didn’t get much sleep last night.

Eric: I can imagine.

Brady: I was up all night just waiting for kristen to walk through that door. Course, that’s not her style though. She would love the idea of me just waiting up, knowing she’s loose, and not knowing where she is. It’s a very special kind of hell.

Kristen: Mmm! My god, ava. This coffee is absolutely out of this world. Mmm! Really, I might never leave. And ava, sweetheart, thank you. Thank you for the loaner. It’s milano, right? Ooh, incomparabile. [Laughs] You don’t know how it feels compared to the prison-issue polyester blend. Jake, fratello, a splash more cream, per piacere.

[Kristen laughs] This is such an indulgence! Oh!

Jake: [Groans] Damn it.

Kristen: Oh, you know what? I’m sorry about your back. You know, you don’t have to get the cream. Ava can get it for me.

Jake: You’re such a peach.

Kristen: Hmm. I’ve had many people tell me that. And although I feel very bad about commandeering your bed, on the other hand–

Jake: On the other hand–

[Groans] Gabi and i both owe you for your vote the last dimera board meeting.

Kristen: Oh, gee. I’d forgotten all about that.

Jake: Yeah?

Kristen: [Laughs] As if.

Jake: Oh, so what? We’re even now?

Kristen: [Laughing] God. No, jake. Not even close. Uh-uh. Ava, sweetheart, you know what? You didn’t have to sleep on the floor. No, I mean, you were right next to me when I drifted off last night.

Ava: Yeah. Well, don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re the biggest cover hog that I’ve ever slept with.

Kristen: Oh. Well, that’s funny. No one else I have been in bed with has ever complained about that. Or anything else for that matter.

Jake: Or maybe they were scared. Kidding.

Kristen: [Soft, fake chuckle] You know what? As fabulous as this bed and the coffee and the company is, lounging around is not part of the agenda. Mm! I am going to stir up the pot around here and there and everywhere.

[Smooches]

Jake: Wow.

Kayla: You know, if orpheus on the loose, maybe we shouldn’t even be out in public.

Steve: No worries, sweetness. I’ve got my ear to the ground. I’m not about to be surprised.

Jada: Steve?

Steve: Jada? Hey, look at you. Oh! Why didn’t you tell me you were coming so soon?

Jada: It all happened so fast.

Steve: Kayla, this is jada hunter, marcus’ little girl all grown up.

Kayla: I really loved your dad, and he was a great doctor too.

Steve: A great man. My friend since the orphanage days. I still miss him.

Kayla: I was really sad to hear that he had passed away.

Jada: Thank you.

Steve: So when’s the interview?

Jada: Yesterday. I got the job.

Kayla: Oh!

Steve: That’s great. You know, I told you I recommended jada to rafe.

Kayla: That’s great.

Steve: When do you start?

Jada: Uh, yesterday. I hit the ground running. I didn’t even have time to call and thank you.

Steve: Rafe’s got you working already?

Jada: Yeah. He actually assigned me to your niece’s case.

Kayla: Oh.

Jada: As a matter of fact, you were my next call. Moderate to severe eczema still disrupts my skin.

Kayla: You were coming to see me? Why?

Jada: Sarah horton was brought in yesterday to answer some questions.

Kayla: Sarah? Why?

Jada: I can’t go into too much detail. I had questioned her about where she was the night of abigail dimera’s murder.

Steve: What reason would you have to question sarah?

Jada: I really can’t get into it. But I’m more concerned about her medical condition, her hallucinations.

Kayla: You don’t think that sarah–

Jada: I don’t “think” anything. I’m just trying to understand the situation, and in order to do that, I’m going to need to access dr. Horton’s medical records.

Kayla: I can’t just hand them over. I mean, there is such a thing as medical privacy.

Jada: And exceptions for law enforcement is also a thing.

Steve: I have an idea. Why don’t we talk this out at the pub over breakfast? My treat.

Eric: Listen, I get that you’re upset and how worried you are, but kristen is rachel’s mom, so maybe all she wants is contact.

Brady: [Scoffing] Yeah. That’s what kristen said on the phone yesterday.

Eric: Wait, wait, wait. You–you spoke to her?

Brady: Before I knew about the pardon. She wanted me to bring rachel to statesville to come visit her. Thank god that rachel’s in california. Gave me the perfect excuse not to do it. I don’t want rachel to have to go through a prison visit.

Eric: Yeah, but then–

Brady: Well, now that kristen’s out, I can’t stop her from going to california. Hell, I can’t even tell my daughter that she can’t see her mom.

Eric: Right.

Brady: I just–I need to find a way to control how and when she sees her.

Eric: Well, I’d get justin started on that as soon as possible.

Brady: Yeah, yeah. Well, it really bu–it really bugs me the way this whole thing started though.

Eric: Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. Started?

Brady: When she got caught, I thought it was just because she got careless, because she was so desperate to see rachel. But eric, she got caught almost as soon as she got into town. Which makes me think, “did she plan that?” Right? And then, right–and now I sound paranoid, right?

Eric: Again, you are talking about kristen.

Brady: I just have a very, very bad feeling about all this.

[Soft dramatic music]

Kristen: Oh! Whoo! Well. [Laughs] That night on the air mattress really took it out of you.

Jake: What was your first clue?

Kristen: Uh, you know what? I’m gonna make it up to you. You’re gonna stay home, you’re gonna rest up in your little hovel, and i will make your excuses to gabi when I see her in the office.

Jake: Ah, you’re gonna go collect on that favor, huh?

Kristen: Yeah. I’m a quid pro quo kinda gal.

Jake: Okay. Just a heads up, gabi and shin aren’t gonna be as willing to give up their bed as we were.

Kristen: Mm. Well, I’m aiming a bit higher than a sleepover.

Jake: What’s that mean?

Kristen: Oh, my god. Think about it, jake.

[Chuckles] You know what? You’re my brother. You’re family. Gabi, blessedly, she means nothing to me. That makes my vote for her a sizable favor, and I think a sizable thank-you is in order.

Jake: So what exactly do you want from her, huh? Huh?

Kristen: Mm! Grr. [Laughs] Calm down, hmm? Don’t go all caveman about your little girlfriend.

Ava: Ex-girlfriend.

Kristen: Of course. Whatever you say.

Ava: I say “ex-girlfriend.”

Kristen: Fine, whatever. Anyway, I’m sure gabi is gonna be thrilled to see me and be ready to do whatever it takes to get me back on my feet. And I’m sure she remembers all the support that she got when she was released from prison. Mmm. Mm-mm-mm. Hmm? Oh! I’m just giving her the chance to pay it forward. Ciao!

[Door slams]

Jake: Well, that was fun.

Ava: Yeah, no. No, that was not fun.

Jake: [Groans] Ooh, hmm. Well, I’ll go take a shower. Long, long hot shower. See if I can unknot this thing, huh?

Ava: Mm.

Jake: Hey, ava? You think I should call gabi, warn her?

Ava: Jake, if she reads the paper, she already knows that kristen’s coming.

Jake: Yeah. You’re right.

[Sighs] My god. What a morning.

Shin: Is that a hint of jealousy I hear in your voice? Maybe I should be flattered. But don’t worry. I was just talking to my mother.

Gabi: Your mother?

Shin: [Laughs] You sound surprised. I do have one, you know.

Gabi: Well, we’ve been dating for over a month now and this is the first time I hear of her.

Shin: Hmm. Well, that might be because my father has such a huge presence. He tends to dominate any conversation has to do with my parents. Should I call her back? Would that convince you?

Gabi: [Scoffs] Great. Then you’ll resent me for not trusting you. If you’re genuine, that is.

Shin: Sounds like a standoff.

Gabi: No, no. I was just–well, I realize that a month in, I might not know you as well as I thought.

Shin: Hmm. A little mystery is a good thing. Keeps it interesting.

Gabi: So you whispering sweet nothing into another woman’s ear while I sleep is interesting? Hmm. Meanwhile, I’m an open book.

Shin: Says the woman who has an unusually close working relationship with her most recent ex.

Gabi: Jake? Oh, please.

[Scoffs]

Shin: In the beginning, he was put off that we were together, but no longer. Maybe he knows something that I don’T.

Gabi: He doesn’t care. He’s with ava now.

Shin: Does that bother you?

Gabi: [Chuckles and sighs] Let me show you how little that bothers me.

[Light music]

Nicole: Just remember, whatever kristen tries to pull, brady loves you. He knows what that lunatic is all about.

Chloe: Yeah, I know, I know. You’re right. I do trust brady. It’s just that the two of them have this weird bond.

Nicole: Tell me about it. Ugh.

Chloe: It’s like she still has this hold over him, even when he knew that she was bad for him. I think that maybe, like, she’s still kind of under his skin.

[Sighs] But I guess you know what I’m talking about, right? Sometimes when you’ve both moved on, but you still have this pull to another person.

Nicole: Yeah, quite a pull. And it worked out great for us.

Chloe: Oh, you’re talking about rafe.

Nicole: Of course I’m talking about rafe. Who else would I be talking– oh, come on. Not you too.

[Sighs]

Eric: Been working really hard for those tips. It’s not really fair to just take it away like that, is it?

Greg: How do you know I wasn’t leaving a tip?

Eric: Because you were taking money out of it and not putting money in. Listen, we know what’s going on here, and it doesn’t have to be this bad.

Greg: Calling the cops?

Eric: Whoa, whoa. Hey, hey. Just hear me out. If you’re in a situation, if you need money, there’s people out there who can help. I can help. Let me just give you my card.

Greg: Shove your help, man!

Eric: Hey.

Steve: Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa. Dude! What did we miss?

Ava: Don’t be an idiot. Do not be an idiot.

Jake: What’d I miss? Why are you suddenly an idiot?

Ava: That was a private conversation.

Jake: All right. Well, what is it you don’t want me to know?

Ava: That I– that–okay, I’m trying really, really hard not to be the same jealous idiot that I was that screwed up my last relationships.

Jake: Huh. You’re jealous?

Ava: I’m trying not to be.

Jake: Okay, I’ll bite. You’re jealous of who? Come on, not gabi.

Ava: Okay, listen. I know I sound crazy, but when kristen called her your girlfriend, you did not contradict her.

Jake: You beat me to it.

Ava: Yeah, I know, I know. But then you wanted to call her and warn her that kristen was coming. I’m sorry, but that got under my skin.

[Chuckles] And the irony of all of this is the reason I went after you in the first place was to get under her skin. And now I think I’m falling for you, jake. Look, I didn’t plan it… but there it is. I just don’t want to set myself up for disappointment if you’re still in love with gabi.

Gabi: I think I made us a little late this morning, but it’s definitely worth it.

Shin: Gabi, there’s something you should know.

Gabi: What?

Kristen: Morning, sleepyheads. Your mission: Stand up to moderate

Jada: Who was that guy? Everything okay here?

Eric: Yeah, yeah. Everything is fine. Just a misunderstanding.

Jada: Have you got cctvs? I can track him down.

Eric: Um–

Brady: You could? I’m sorry. Who are you?

Jada: I–

Steve: This is jada hunter. Her dad was one of my oldest friends. She’s the newest member of the salem pd. Jada, this is brady black and eric brady.

Jada: So the brady pub is your place?

Eric: Ah, it’s my dad’S. Yeah.

Brady: It’s nice to meet you. Look, I gotta go. I got to make sure chloe’s okay.

Eric: Yeah, yeah.

Brady: Heard about the pardons? What the hell was he thinking?

Jada: Mm-hm.

Steve: I don’t know.

Kayla: Gabi heard about the pardons. Kristen and orpheus and the homicidal son.

Steve: It’s like the governor released a plague of locusts on us.

Gabi: What the hell?

Shin: As I was saying–

Gabi: Did you break out of statesville?

Kristen: No.

Gabi: Oh, you’re going right back. How stupid are you? You should hightail it to the border when you had the chance.

Shin: Gabi, wait.

Kristen: He’s trying to stop you from going off half-cocked and making a fool of yourself.

Shin: She was pardoned.

Gabi: What? Pardoned? They have enough on you to throw away the key.

Shin: The governor pardoned her yesterday.

Kristen: Ah. Kinda gives you faith in the political system, doesn’t it?

Gabi: Why would he do that? What did you–[Gasps] Did you– did you put one of his family members in your dungeon?

Kristen: Shh! Shh.

[Exhales deeply] We’re not going to talk about me, we are going to talk about business and how I can help you clean up the mess that you made of it.

Gabi: [Sighs]

Jake: You think I’m still in love with gabi?

Ava: I don’t know. But I do know that I have been second choice a couple of times, and I do not want to go down that road again. You know, with steve, it was always kayla hovering around, even when she wasn’t there. Rafe and nicole was the same thing. Deep down, I always knew. Ava vitali, also-ran. Consolation prize.

Jake: And you think that’s what you are to me?

Ava: I’m asking you if I am.

Jake: [Sighs] All right. When you said before that you got into this whole thing with me because you wanted to stick it to gabi, right? And if I’m being honest, it was the same for me. Probably not the best way to start a relationship, but… but I’m not steve. I’m not rafe. And you want to know the truth about me and gabi? I was an also-ran too.

Nicole: [Scoffs] Yet here I am, trying to tell you how happy rafe and I are, and you go there.

Chloe: I didn’t say that you don’t love rafe, but come on. You and eric?

Nicole: Okay, okay.

Chloe: All along, the both of you–

Nicole: You know what? I’ve already heard this from allie. What is it that I have to do, huh? Take out a billboard so everyone gets the message? Eric being here is irrelevant, collar or no collar. I am a happily married woman.

Brady: Chloe, you okay?

Chloe: Hey, yeah.

Brady: You’re okay. Okay.

Chloe: Oh, any news?

Brady: No. All is quiet on the western front so far.

Nicole: Hmm. Look how that turned out.

Brady: [Sighs] You’re back.

Nicole: Yes, and given what’s going on, maybe I should’ve stayed in new york.

Brady: [Sighs] Pool floaties are like whooping cough.

Kayla: So bo and roman are both my brothers.

Jada: Your father?

Kayla: Yeah, and they’re both cops. And shawn is bo’s son, and he’s a cop too. And this place has always been known as where the cops hang out as long as anybody can remember, right?

Eric: Yeah. You’ll feel pretty much at home.

Jada: You know, I’ve been here once before. I had a run-in with your dad’s short-order cook.

Eric: Clyde.

Steve: Oh, yeah. He’s a real charmer, isn’t he?

[All chuckle] Right at home in the hospitality industry.

Eric: My father believes in second chances.

Kayla: So how many miles did you run today?

Eric: None. I was on my way and I bumped into brady.

Jada: You’re a runner? Me too.

Eric: Really?

Jada: Mm-hmm.

Eric: Well, yeah. There’s some great trails that wind through the park and, well, if you ever have any time, let me know. I’ll show you.

Jada: Thanks. I will.

Eric: Yeah.

Jada: So what do you do? Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.

Eric: No, no. You’re not prying. It’s just that, um–

Kayla: Um, he’s sort of between things.

Jada: Hmm.

Eric: That’s the brady irish american way of saying I used to be a priest. Now, I’m just trying to figure out what to do next.

Jada: Oh.

[Chuckles softly]

Nicole: I’m just kidding about the whole new york thing. Brady, you know that I have your back.

Brady: I know you have my back. I’m just worried about rachel. I mean, I was talking to eric this morning and–

Nicole: Oh, you saw eric?

Brady: Yeah, he was tearing out of the pub and headed for his morning run, and I was just–I was so on edge, I– I mean, I almost tackled him.

Nicole: Yeah, okay. Well, I’m sure you want to check in with theresa, and I’ll give you some privacy. I have an errand to run.

Brady: Hey, if you hear anything–

Nicole: Yeah?

Brady: About kristen–

Nicole: I’ll let you know. Bye.

Brady: Bye.

Chloe: Bye.

Brady: [Snaps fingers]

Chloe: [Sighs]

Brady: Are you okay?

Chloe: Well, now that you’re here, I am.

Kristen: Hmm.

[Sighs] You need to redo these projections.

Gabi: Why?

Kristen: Because they don’t account for inflation, and because… I told you to. I’d like you to remember why your name is on that door.

Gabi: I will never forget that it was you that made it happen, and I’m very, very grateful for that.

Kristen: Oh, as you should be, because if it wasn’t for me, you’d be out on the streets. You are intimately familiar with the bylaws, aren’t you? Now, correct me if I’m wrong. It’d be fairly easy to push gabi out, wouldn’t it? And all it would take would be another vote, one with slightly different results.

Jake: Look. Gabi had already found the one before I came into the picture. My twin brother stefan, okay? And the truth is, they’d still be together if he wasn’t dead. But that doesn’t mean that she didn’t love me and vice versa. But in the end, it was amazing how quickly, what we had, how it fell apart. Because we were all passion, all heat, nothing underneath. No foundation. So yeah, bottom line, we didn’t trust each other. And it hurt at the time, badly, but I realized that I wasn’t the love of her life, and she wasn’t mine. So if you’re asking if I’m still pining over gabi, I’m not. I’m over her. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Ava: So you’re over gabi?

Jake: [Sighs] Yeah. Even her pawing all over shin doesn’t bother me that much. I got something better to think about. Wait a minute. Did you say you’re falling for me?

Ava: No, I–

Jake: Did I–

Ava: I-I-I think I said, “I think.”

Jake: Oh, you “think”?

Ava: Think I’m falling for you.

Jake: Okay. Well, I think that I’m falling for you. Scratch that. I know I am.

Ava: Yeah?

Jake: Yeah.

Ava: How?

Jake: [Scoffs] You want me to count the ways?

Ava: Mm-hmm.

Jake: All right, all right. I sit there at work and I stare at the clock counting down the time till I get to see you again. You know I got a speeding ticket the other day? Wasn’t paying attention. I just kept driving faster and faster the closer I got to home, to you.

Ava: Mm. I stare at the clock too, like a stupid little teenage girl just waiting for the phone to ring.

Jake: Hmm. Well… most people… they can’t see past that tough exterior you put up.

[Chuckles] But I? I see right through it. I see the woman who says what she means, means what she says. I’ve seen the real you. A woman who looks at you in a way like you’re looking at me right now. It makes you feel like you’ve won the damn lottery.

[Soft dramatic music]

Gabi: She can do that? She can force another round of votes?

[Chuckles] All right. Well, you want my job? Okay. Since you’re asking li about the bylaws, why don’t you also ask him what your chances are of getting voted to take my place? Because the odds are zero! Ej will never go for it and neither will chad.

Kristen: You’re right. They’d rather torch the place than hand it over to me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t throw all things dimera into utter chaos.

Gabi: [Scoffs]

Kristen: Gabi, sweetheart, we got off to a tense start, hmm? I am happy to have you in charge. I come in peace only to cash in on a favor.

Gabi: So you don’t want my job? But you do want something, something that’s in my power to grant you.

Kristen: You are so perceptive.

Gabi: All right. I have two questions for you. What exactly is it that you want, and am I going to end up in prison for giving it to you?

Eric: It was nice meeting you, ms. Jada.

Jada: Have a good run.

Eric: I will. I’m sure you two are going to be showing her around town?

Steve: Well, we offered, but she’s too busy with work.

Jada: Yeah, which hasn’t made it easy to find a place. I mean, the salem inn is nice, but it’s not sustainable on a cop’s salary.

Eric: What? My dad, he rents rooms upstairs that are pretty reasonable, I mean, if you can get past your issues with the cook.

Jada: Oh, thanks. I’ll keep that in mind. And maybe I’ll see you on a run.

Eric: [Chuckles] Sounds good.

Greg: Your purse, lady! Now! My a1c stayed here,

Ava: I don’t know why we’re here. I mean, kristen finally left. We have the place to ourselves.

Jake: Yes, but this is where the jewelry store is.

Ava: What do you want with the jewelry store?

Jake: They sell rings there, don’t they?

Ava: Rings?

Jake: [Sighs] Ava… I don’t like that you feel that I’m not serious about this relationship, and I really don’t want you feeling like an also-ran, because you’re not. I already told you gabi… is not the love of my life, and gwen certainly wasn’t either, but… maybe you could be. Maybe you are.

Ava: You’re saying you want to marry me?

Gabi: [Sighs] Well, that was something.

Shin: It could’ve been a lot worse.

Gabi: I had to give in what she wanted, but at least she’s someone else’s headache now.

Brady: So there’s no sign of her out there, right? Okay, good. Listen, theresa, please don’t say anything to rachel until I know exactly what kristen is planning.

Kristen: Well, that won’t be a long wait. So…who’s gonna get their new boss some coffee?

Jada: I should get going. About earlier, I know you’re loyal to your patient– your friend, and I’m not trying to make things tense. I just really want to see justice done for your niece.

Kayla: Right.

Steve: Good luck today.

Jada: You think I’m gonna need it?

Steve: A salem cop needs luck every day of the year.

Nicole: You stay back. I have mace.

Greg: If you did, you would’ve hauled it out by now. I’m not telling you twice. Your purse.

Nicole: Eric!

Eric: Hey, let’s all take a breath.

Greg: You just back off!

Eric: Hey, hey. Nobody wants– nobody wants any trouble. This doesn’t have to end badly.

Nicole: [Yelps]

Eric: Whoa, whoa.

Shawn: Yeah, well, we’re gonna see, I guess. I mean, last time, he only woke up once.

Belle: Oh, well, that’s good. I didn’t have a chance to tell you before, but I’m really gladyou got to bring him home.

Shawn: So am I. Look, thank you. Thank you for coming over.

Belle: Yeah, no problem. What did you want to talk about?

Shawn: I wanted to apologize.

Evan: Dad, the governor’s press conference just ended. It’s official. We’ve been granted pardons.

Orpheus: No thanks to you.

Evan: Look, I know I shouldn’t have told kristen dimera our plan, but it all turned out okay in the end, right? We’re all three getting out of here.

Orpheus: Barely, the governor was none too pleased by kristen’s special requests. That woman nearly tanked the entire deal.

Gwen: What happened to you?

Kristen: [Chuckles] I used the concrete wall as a punching bag. I don’t recommend it.

Gwen: Duly noted. Guess you’re having a bad day.

Kristen: Mm, I was, I was. But things are starting to look up.

Xander: Don’t worry, maggie. It’ll all be straightened out. Sarah will be just fine. I promise. Listen, I’ve got to go. I’ll keep you posted. Oi, commissioner! You need to let sarah out of here immediately. This is all terribly unfair.

Rafe: Oh, calm down, xander. We just need to ask her a few questions, that’s all.

Xander: Oh, and that couldn’t wait until after we finished our wedding? Your newbie detective came crashing in right in the middle of our ceremony and treated my bride like a common criminal. And my god, as if sarah would even ever say a harsh word to her cousin abigail, let alone murder her.

Rafe: Well, right now, sarah is just a person of interest. That’s all.

Xander: Whatever you want to call it, rafe, she shouldn’t be talking to the cops without a lawyer.

Rafe: Well, she insisted she didn’t need one. That decision is hers to make.

Xander: I just hope she doesn’t end up regretting that decision.

Jada: As I told you earlier, an eyewitness placed you at the scene of the dimera estate the night abigail dimera was killed.

Sarah: I know that you couldn’t tell me earlier, but now it’s just the two of us, can you tell me who the witness was?

Jada: It was lucas horton.

Sarah: I see.

Jada: But before we get into the night in question, I wanted to ask you something that you mentioned at your mother’s house.

Sarah: Yeah, sure. I’m happy to cooperate.

Jada: Great, you mentioned you’re on medication. For what?

Sarah: To help control the aftereffects of another drug that I was given.

Jada: And what are these aftereffects?

Sarah: Hallucinations.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Ava: I love you too, sweetheart. And I miss you so much. You too, bye.

Jake: That your secret lover?

Ava: No, dummy, it was my son.

Jake: Uh-huh.

Ava: You know I’ve only got eyes for you.

Jake: Mmm.

Ava: Mm-hmm, how was work?

Jake: Thrilling. Let me tell you, watching gabi and shin’s love fest makes you want to gouge your eyes out.

Ava: Mmm, so things are getting pretty serious with them, huh?

Jake: Looks like it. Anyway, enough about them. How was your day?

Ava: Well, before I was talking with my secret lover, I mean, tripp…

Jake: Uh-huh.

Ava: I was watching a pretty interesting press conference.

Jake: Sounds like a contradiction of terms.

Ava: Oh, so then I take it you haven’t heard the news.

Jake: About?

Ava: The governor issued several pardons just now, including one for your sister kristen.

Jake: Huh.

Kristen: It’s funny. I was pretty much resigned to finishing out my sentence here, with the occasional escape, of course, when this amazing opportunity for a full pardon just fell right into my lap. And I was never one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Gwen: Well, congratulations. I guess this is goodbye then.

Kristen: Actually, it isn’T. No, see, you are coming with me.

Gwen: What?

Kristen: Yes, what, did you think I’m gonna leave you behind? No, hon–ouch. I got you a full pardon too.

Shawn: I spoke to chloe earlier. And she really helped me understand just how unfair that I’ve been to you since the moment that little shawn was conceived.

Belle: I don’t want to go back there.

Shawn: Belle, please, I just–let me just say this. I was wrong. I was wrong to let you believe that jan and I never had sex. I should have told you. I should have told you the moment that it happened so that you wouldn’t have gotten blindsided by her all those months later with her telling you that she’s pregnant. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry about the decisions that I made that affected the both of us. Letting jan move in, and telling you to keep your distance from her? Look, all I was trying to do was protect my unborn son. But you are my wife, belle. You’re my wife, and I should have involved you in every decision that was made. And I should have made it clear to you and to jan that you and I–that we’re a team.

Belle: Well, I didn’t really make that easy for you. The idea of jan having your baby just drove me crazy, and I shut down, and I shut you down.

Shawn: But I should not have let you. I should have worked with you. I should have worked harder to find a solution, a different solution. Like, to have jan–to have her live someplace else. Okay, but no, I didn’T. I put you in an impossible position. And for that, belle, I am so sorry.

Evan: Governor mitchell didn’t mention kristen’s two other demands when he started his announcement. I was worried he was going to renege on that part of the deal. But he managed to sneak them in at the end.

Orpheus: He was probably embarrassed by what kristen made him do. I can’t say that I blame him. I don’t know what that woman was thinking.

Rolf: I just heard the wonderful news! Ah! Thank you for securing me a pardon from the governor. I am so honored that you would even think of me. Of course, I did help you escape that one time. But you’ve been a little standoffish since they brought you back. I was starting to think you didn’t like me.

Orpheus: I don’T.

Evan: Dr. Rolf, your release was kirsten dimera’s idea, not my dad’S.

Rolf: Ah. I should have known the dimeras would once again come to my rescue.

Evan: I don’t get it. Why are you so loyal to that family?

Rolf: Stefano was the first person to acknowledge and encourage my scientific genius. Apparently, his daughter shares his wisdom and values my considerable talents as well. Ah, that kristen always was the shrewd one.

Gwen: Okay, let me get this straight. So you had evan tell his father that he need to secure a pardon not just for you, but also for dr. Rolf and for me?

Kristen: Yeah, I mean, I have a certain loyalty to dr. Rolf as well. Better yet, he may come in handy for me.

Gwen: Well, I get that, but why for me? Why would you ask for a pardon for me?

Kristen: Oh, silly, I’m a good and loyal friend.

Gwen: I didn’t realize we were friends.

Kristen: Of course we are. I mean, do you think I’ve forgotten how you helped me escape police custody?

Gwen: Because you blackmailed me.

Kristen: Okay, granted, our friendship didn’t exactly start on a level playing field. But you and ava, you know, you came through for me. And I felt I owed you one.

Gwen: I see. Well, this is incredible.

Kristen: Isn’t it? This must be how oprah feels. You get a pardon. You get a pardon. Everybody gets a pardon.

Gwen: Yeah, well, not everybody.

Jake: So my sister kristen’s a free woman now, huh?

Ava: Yep. Along with orpheus and evan.

Jake: Did the governor mention why he issued these pardons?

Ava: Yeah, I don’t know. Tripp called during the middle of the conference; I didn’t get all the juicy details.

Jake: You wouldn’t have anything to do with this, would you?

Ava: With kristen getting pardoned? Why would you even ask me that?

Jake: Because I would imagine that you still have a certain amount of influence over your old mob ties, right? You and kristen were friends. You helped her escape police custody, what, twice?

Ava: I had nothing to do with the governor’s pardon. Although, I kind of like that you think I got that kind of power, that I could pull off something like that.

Jake: Well, I think there’s no limit as to what you could pull off, ava vitali, what with your charm and your brains. You are a woman of many talents.

Ava: Yeah. And don’t you forget it.

Xander: Well, can you at least tell me the name of this supposed eyewitness? Who’s claiming they saw sarah at the dimera estate the night abigail was murdered?

Rafe: Not at liberty to say.

Xander: Was it lucas? Heard some cops talking about some hypnosis session he had with marlena? Sounds totally bogus to me.

Rafe: I just told you I am not revealing the identity of the witness.

Xander: Of course it was lucas; who else could it be? He’s your main suspect, right? And what, he just happens to recall seeing sarah. Come on, it must be painfully obvious even to you that he’s just trying to point the finger at someone else.

Rafe: Okay. Let’s say you’re right. Let’s say it was lucas. Why would he implicate sarah, of all people?

Xander: I don’t know. Maybe it was the first name that popped into his wee head. But we’re talking about sarah, rafe. She’s a doctor. She took an oath to do no harm. Not to mention she’s the kindest person on earth. She would certainly never murder anyone, especially her own cousin.

Jada: Can you tell me some more about the drug that causes these hallucinations?

Sarah: It doesn’t have a name. It’s experimental.

Jada: Is it recreational?

Sarah: I didn’t take it willingly, if that’s what you’re asking. A woman named kristen dimera injected me with it.

Jada: Why would she do that?

Sarah: She was keeping me hostage in the dimera tunnels. I found the syringe on the floor, and I was planning on using it against her to try to escape. She overpowered me and used it on me instead.

Jada: Do you know how a drug-filled syringe would just happen to be on the floor?

Sarah: I did not know it then, but I have since learned that abigail left it behind.

Jada: Abigail dimera?

Sarah: Yes.

Jada: So, in a way, abigail was responsible for your hallucinations. I’m sure that made you very angry with her.

Sarah: No, no, of course not. This is all kristen’s fault. She’s the one that I’m angry with, and I am more than angry. She is a vile human being. She’s a sadistic bitch, and I hate her for what she did to me.

Kristen: What do you mean? I mean, who else was I supposed to get a pardon for? One of those lamebrains we see in the exercise yard every day?

Gwen: How about your bff lani?

Kristen: Yeah. Well, believe me, I would if I could have. But the governor doesn’t have jurisdiction now that she’s serving her sentence out of state.

Gwen: Well, that’s too bad. For her. But you and me, I mean, we’re really going home tonight.

Kristen: Yes, yes, we are!

Gwen: Really?

Kristen: Yes!

Gwen: Oh, my–ah! Oh, my god. Thank you.

Rolf: Well, I must go and gather my things if we are to leave this vile penitentiary tonight. What a delightful turn of events, huzzah!

Orpheus: What a freak show.

Evan: He’s excited. That’s all. He’s got his life back, and so do I, and as soon as I’m out of this hellhole, I’m going straight to shawn brady’s, and I’m gonna claim my child.

Orpheus: Well, if that’s your plan, you’re gonna need this. It’s the original results from jan’s paternity test. It proves that shawn brady is not the father of her baby.

Evan: Thanks. Although, I wish you’d told me the truth a lot sooner.

Orpheus: Right. Because you’re so discreet.

Evan: I get that I let you down. And I’m sorry.

Orpheus: It’s fine. Just go get my grandson. He belongs with us, not with marlena’s dimwitted son-in-law.

Belle: In the beginning, I wanted to lay all the blame on you, but I realize now that I can’T. I made some mistakes as well. I pretty much did what I always do when things are rough between us, and I sought comfort and assurance from someone else, when I should have been trying to work things out with you. Every time we fought, I turned to ej, even though I knew how much it bothered you. And I guess, on some level, that’s probably why I did it.

Shawn: Look, I know that part of you ran to ej to hurt me. But is that all that it was? Like, in the end, did– in the end, did you fall in love with him?

Belle: What–no, no. Ej was there for me, but it was never love. And I want you to know i didn’t file for separation so I could be with ej. I really did feel like we needed that space. But I do admit that having those separation papers helped me rationalize that it was okay to be with him. I told myself that I wasn’t betraying our vows because we were legally separated. But I do know that it was a betrayal. And I am deeply sorry I hurt you.

Shawn: We’ve established that you and I are both sorry. So where does that leave us now?

Jada: Do you still suffer from these hallucinations?

Sarah: I have them less often now that my medicine has been adjusted.

Jada: Can you give me an example of how these hallucinations manifest themselves?

Sarah: I imagined my stepfather was kristen, and she was holding a syringe, but it was just him with a pen.

Jada: I see. Any other incidents?

Sarah: I mistook a woman named nicole walker for kristen. And I attacked her.

Jada: Attacked her how?

Sarah: I grabbed her by the arm to try to get her away from eric brady. Xander stepped in and helped me realize that I was hallucinating, made me snap out of it. Nicole was fine. She wasn’t hurt at all.

Jada: Have you hallucinated that anybody else was kristen dimera?

Sarah: Xander’s ex-wife, chanel dupree.

Jada: And did you attack her the same way you did nicole walker?

Sarah: Sort of.

Jada: Sort of, can you please elaborate on that?

Sarah: I threatened her with a knife.

Xander: Sarah and I should be celebrating our wedding night right now. This very minute, we should be enjoying champagne, and cake, and lots and lots of newlywed sex.

Rafe: Yeah, well, I really don’t need to hear about your honeymoon plans.

Xander: Once again, all our plans have gone to hell. We were kept apart for so long by kristen and then gwen. I really thought this was our chance, finally, our big moment, our happily ever after.

Rafe: Okay, listen. Believe it or not, I am not completely unsympathetic to your feelings, all right, so if you could just put your frustration aside and have a little objectivity, okay? So if it turns out that sarah was at the dimeras the night abigail was murdered…

Xander: Which she wasn’T.

Rafe: Then we need to know everything that happened, right? And if it turns out that sarah is innocent…

Xander: Which she is!

Rafe: She might be able to shed some light on the investigation.

[Phone rings] Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to take this. Hey, abe, what’s up? No, I did not see the press conference. You’ve gotta be kidding me.

Shawn: I guess there isn’t an easy answer.

Belle: No, there isn’T.

[Cell phone beeps]

Shawn: I have to check this. It might be work, okay? What the hell?

Belle: What, what’s wrong?

Shawn: Governor mitchell pardoned five people. And you are not gonna believe who they are.

Ava: So did you figure out why the governor pardoned your sister?

Jake: No, it’s pretty vague about why he was letting her go. But I did come across a related piece of news you might be interested to hear.

Ava: Yeah, what’s that?

Jake: Well, toward the end of the press conference, governor mitchell announced that he was issuing two more pardons, one for dr. Wilhelm rolf, and the other for your own pal, gwen.

Ava: You’re kidding. So the governor pardoned orpheus, kristen dimera, evan frears, gwen rizczech, and dr. Wilhelm rolf. Talk about a rogues’ gallery. And as of tonight, they are all free to do whatever the hell they please. Research shows that people remember ads with young people

Jada: You said at your mother’s house on the night in question that you were planning on visiting abigail dimera.

Sarah: Yeah, dr. Evans suggested that I go speak to my cousin because abigail had had a similar reaction to the same drug.

Jada: So what happened when you went to visit her?

Sarah: I didn’t go, it turns out. I went to statesville to see abigail’s sister gwen rizczech.

Jada: And after your visit to statesville?

Sarah: I went to the salem inn. I needed to lie down. I was just–I was feeling off because my meds hadn’t been adjusted yet.

Jada: So you’re saying that you never went to the dimera estate that night.

Sarah: That’s what I’m saying.

Jada: Well, lucas said he saw you there.

Sarah: That’s impossible. So lucas is lying, or he’s mistaken. I don’t know.

Jada: I’m just telling you what he said he saw. He said he saw you fleeing down the stairs. You had an object in your hand. You dropped it.

Sarah: I couldn’t drop something if I wasn’t there.

Jada: I’m just telling you what lucas said. Even though he didn’t know what you had in your hand, allegedly, I think it was the knife, the same one that killed abigail dimera.

Rolf: Ms. Dimera, please accept my heartfelt thanks for securing my freedom. You have no idea how hard it has been for me to coexist with all those neanderthals in there.

Kristen: You are very welcome, rolf. I know father wouldn’t have wanted me to leave you languishing behind bars. And now you can continue his work.

Rolf: Indeed. And am I correct in thinking you may require my services in the future?

Kristen: Oh, you know me too well. I will get in touch soon. But until then, lie low and stay out of trouble.

Rolf: Understood. I shall await your instructions.

Gwen: So what services of dr. Rolf will you be requiring, ms. Dimera? What exactly do you have planned?

Belle: Well, please be safe. Okay, I love you too. Okay. My mom heard about orpheus, so they’re on the alert.

Shawn: That’s good. That’s good. Did you get ahold of brady?

Belle: Yeah, he knows about kristen.

Shawn: I left word for ben and ciara. Thank god they’re halfway across the world, where evan can’t get to them.

Belle: That’s a relief. All right, so everyone we love is safe.

Shawn: Yeah, and they’re gonna stay that way.

Evan: Sorry to interrupt. Door was open.

Shawn: What the hell are you doing here? If you’re looking for my sister, then–

Evan: I’m not. I’m here to get my son.

Shawn: Your son?

Evan: The one you call shawn christian. I’m sorry to tell you–actually, no, I’m not. I’m proud to say it. He’s not your son. He’s mine. After trying lots of things to manage her

Sarah: Look, abigail was my cousin, and I loved her. She rescued me from kristen. I’m profoundly grateful to her. Why in god’s name would I ever hurt her?

Jada: You obviously wouldn’t in your normal state of mind, but, dr. Horton, you’ve admitted that you’re subject to hallucinations. Isn’t it possible that you thought abigail was kristen dimera and felt that she was a threat? I mean, you’ve admitted to brandishing a knife against ms. Dupree. You could have done the same thing to abigail, except this time, I don’t think that anybody was there to protect her, to stop you from taking your revenge.

Sarah: Am I under arrest?

Jada: No.

Sarah: Then I’d like to leave.

Kristen: Oh, you know me, I always have a plan. But I’m not ready to share the details. Let’s just say I intend to get back everything I lost. And I assume you’ll do the same?

Gwen: Well, I might be able to repair my relationship with my father, but xander and I, we’re a lost cause, especially after what I did to sarah. I don’t think he’ll ever speak to me again, let alone take me back.

Kristen: Hey, you never know. At least you have a fighting chance.

Gwen: Good to know one of us thinks so.

Kristen: Oh, honey, I know so. You are beautiful, and smart, and definitely more interesting than that ditzy sarah horton. I can’t stand that moron xander. I never could. But for some reason, you love him. And we both have been given a second chance at freedom, and I think you and I need to go after what we want and not let anyone stand in our way.

Xander: What’s taking so long? Oh, you okay–what happened?

Sarah: Will you please take me home?

Xander: Of course.

Evan: Is that him? Shawn christian?

Shawn: You take another step towards my son, and I will kill you.

Evan: Look, I didn’t come here to fight with you.

Shawn: Okay, well do yourself a favor, turn around, and get the hell out of my house now.

Evan: I understand why you might not believe me.

Belle: Yeah, maybe because you’re a psychotic murderer.

Evan: But I swear I’m telling the truth. I’m the father of that baby, of jan spears’ baby.

Shawn: How do you even know jan?

Evan: She and I hooked up when she first came to statesville. We met in the infirmary. It got pretty hot pretty fast. I didn’t know at the time, but she wanted me to get her pregnant so she could pass the baby off as yours. I guess it worked out fine.

Shawn: Look, I have a paternity test that proves that I am that baby’s father.

Evan: Yeah, a test that my father helped jan alter.

Shawn: Orpheus? Why would he do that?

Evan: He had his reasons.

Belle: This doesn’t make any sense.

Evan: Look, I have the real results of the paternity test right here. It says that you’re not the father, as you can see.

Shawn: How do we know that that isn’t the fake, huh?

Belle: Yeah, even if these results are real, they don’t prove that you’re the father.

Evan: She named the baby after me. Christian is my birth name.

Belle: She also named the baby after shawn.

Shawn: She named my son after me.

Evan: Look, I’ll take a paternity test if you want to. In fact, bring it on. See, the sooner that we get this all sorted out, the sooner I can be with my son.

Jake: All right, so you remember the dimera board meeting a little while ago. Kristen attended virtually.

Ava: Mm-hmm, yeah, ’cause she was on the run, as usual.

Jake: Right, well, she voted against my brothers, which kept gabi in charge of the company, and in turn kind of saved my job too.

Ava: So in other words, she did you a major favor.

Jake: Right, and she called me afterwards and basically said that in exchange for that major favor, that maybe the two of us could collaborate, that we would do great things together.

Ava: Yeah, like what exactly?

Jake: I don’t really know. To be honest with you, I kind of forgot about it after she got arrested, but now that she’s free, changes everything.

[Knock at door]

Kristen: Hey, jake, open up. It’s your sister. It’s kristen.

Sarah: I can’t believe our wedding was ruined again.

Xander: I’m so sorry, sarah. But it’s all gonna work out.

Sarah: Xander.

Xander: I promise you.

Sarah: How can you say it’s gonna work out? I’m a murder suspect.

Xander: Let’s just–let’s not talk about that right now.

Sarah: How can we not talk talk about it? This could change our whole life. I’m sitting here, and I’m worried about me when my cousin abigail was just… how could this happen? How could someone take her life?

Xander: It’s gonna be all right, okay? It’s gonna be okay.

Sarah: How could this day get any worse?

Gwen: Hello, xander, sarah.

Xander: Gwen? What the hell?

Gwen: Guess you haven’t heard. Yeah, the governor set me free. Full pardon. So I’m free as a bird. Isn’t that just the best news ever? Right, well, see you around.

Rolf: It’s good to see you again, stefano. As I’m sure you’re aware, my experiments were on hold for quite some time. But, thanks to kristen, I can finally get back to my important work. I hope I continue to make you proud.

[Dramatic music]

Jake: Ah, hello, kristen.

Kristen: Evening, jake. Hey, ava. Well, since your jaws aren’t hanging on the floor in shock, I presume you heard my wonderful news.

Ava: Yeah, we were just talking about your release. Congratulations. You must be so relieved.

Kristen: You have no idea.

Jake: So, kristen, I was actually just telling ava that you could be knocking at my door any minute ’cause i sort of owe you a favor.

Kristen: Oh, there’s no “sort of” about it. Matter of fact, since I saved your job, in my calculations, you owe my multiple favors.

Jake: How many is multiple?

Kristen: Well, as my lawyer would say, it depends. In any case, I’m here to call on my first one.

Ava: Which is…

Kristen: Which is, I need a place to stay. Yeah, and though it does fall a bit short of my personal standards, I think this little pied–terre of yours will do me just fine. Thank you.

[Sighs]

Evan: Should we all head over to the hospital now, get the ball rolling on the paternity test?

Shawn: Look, my son is not going anywhere.

Evan: Look, I understand you’re upset. Jan lied to us both. But I am telling the truth, and deep down you know that.

Shawn: What I know is that you need to get the hell out of my sight before I rip you to shreds.

Evan: I’ll go, for now. But I’m coming back with that court order for that paternity test.

Belle: Which we will fight.

Evan: Goodnight, shawn christian. Daddy will be back soon.

Jada: You really don’t need to buy me a beer.

Rafe: What–no, you had a great first day. You earned it. Plus, it’ll give me the chance to get you up to speed on the five felons that the governor pardoned today.

Jada: I read about that announcement.

Rafe: Yeah.

Jada: Why would the governor set so many dangerous criminals free?

Rafe: I–well, what do you know? Here comes one of them now.

Orpheus: Evening, commissioner.

Rafe: Yeah. Listen, I don’t know how you managed to pull this off, but you should know that I’ve got my eye on you. So if you came here looking to cause trouble–

Orpheus: Oh, no, no. Wouldn’t dream of it, no. No, from here on in, I’m gonna be a model citizen.

Rafe: Yeah.
