I just need a little bit, uh, uh, time to myself. But if thomas or charlotte asks for me, I’ll come over right away. Okay. Thank you.

[Somber music]

Clyde: I don’t mean to be rude, commissioner, but my girl and I are having a private conversation here.

Nancy: I just asked clyde to move in with me.

Rafe: Well, I’m sorry to interrupt. Nancy, I need to know where you got that bracelet.

Nancy: Oh, isn’t it gorgeous?

Rafe: Yeah, so did you, uh, buy it in a store or online?

Nancy: Oh, it was a gift.

Rafe: From whom?

Marlena: [Scoffs] You want me to be the baby’s godmother? Are you sure?

Ben: Absolutely. I mean, unless it would it be weird because you’re my psychiatrist? But I mean, I think of you as family at this point.

Marlena: Well, I do too. Do we think that ciara would be on board?

Ben: I mean, why wouldn’t she be?

Marlena: Well, for one thing, I did–I did try to steal your baby.

Jan: I don’t know what you’re talking about, evan. Since when do you have a baby?

Evan: Since you gave birth to him. Little shawn christian? Obviously, you named him after me. Christian’s my real name.

Jan: I named him after our lord and savior. Look, I don’t know if you’re having some mental breakdown or what, but you are definitely confused.

Evan: Actually, I’m crystal clear on what happened. We crossed paths in the prison infirmary. You said you were having the worst christmas ever. I asked if there was anything I could do. Turns out, you asked me to do you.

Jan: Beg your pardon?

Evan: You seduced me, hoping I’d knock you up.

Jan: Why would I wanna get pregnant by a homicidal maniac?

Evan: [Laughs] So you could pass off the kid as shawn brady’s, which is exactly what you’re doing.

Ben: You didn’t try to take our baby, dr. Evans. The devil did.

Marlena: Yeah, still. I can see how ciara might feel uncomfortable with me being bo’s godmother.

Ben: Trust me, ciara loves the idea. She’s the one that pointed out that you went up against satan, and you beat him twice. I don’t think there’s another person in this world who could be a better spiritual mentor for our son.

Marlena: Well, if you’re both sure–

Ben: We’re sure.

Marlena: [Laughs] Oh, I would love to. I would love to, thank you.

Shawn: Well, I’m headed to get jan a buddy’s burger. Would you do me a favor? Would you–would you keep her company while I’m gone?

Ciara: Ugh, shawn, does she really need a babysitter?

Shawn: She’s just a little bit bummed out today.

Ciara: Is it because of the baby?

Shawn: No, no, he’s actually–he’s good. I mean, he’s gained weight. We got to hold him.

Ciara: Wow.

Shawn: He’s great.

Ciara: Good, good. Well, that’s good news, right?

Shawn: Well, for jan, it’s–it’s bittersweet. I mean, of course, she’s happy that he’s okay, but she– she knows as soon as he gets released, that she’s gonna have to go back to prison.

Ciara: Mm-hmm, right, prison. Exactly where she belongs.

Shawn: I know, I know, but she’s barely had any time to bond with the little guy. And come on, imagine–imagine you having to leave little bo after, like, what, two weeks.

Ciara: Well, you know what? I don’t have to imagine that, shawn, because I am not a total psycho.

Shawn: Our son does not know jan’s history. All he knows is that she is his mother, and that he needs her.

Ciara: Okay, I-I just– I don’t know if I like this.

Shawn: Like what?

Ciara: You being all concerned about jan.

Shawn: I’m concerned about my son.

Ciara: Okay.

Shawn: If there’s something that you wanna say, ciara, why don’t you just say it?

Ciara: Fine. Shawn, are you or are you not starting to have feelings for jan?

Jan: There’s no denying that we shared a hot and steamy encounter when I first arrived at statesville. And while it certainly was an enthusiastic greeting, you are mistaken in thinking you planted your seed inside me.

Evan: That’s a strange way of putting it.

Jan: I’m trying to keep it classy.

Evan: We hooked up in a prison infirmary. It’s a little late for classy. Why don’t you be honest instead?

Jan: I am. I have no idea why you think you’re the father of my child.

Evan: Because my father told me the truth.

Jan: And who’s your father?

Evan: Some people call him milo harp.

Jan: Never heard of him.

Evan: Ever heard of orpheus?

Jan: The notorious criminal is your dad? Why didn’t he tell me?

Evan: There’s a lot he keeps close to the vest. He didn’t tell me until recently that you had my baby, and he switched the paternity test for you.

Jan: Jeez, you really can’t trust anyone in prison. So what, you two are in cahoots now?

Evan: He doesn’t know I’m calling you. But jan, the jig is up.

Jan: What does that mean?

Evan: It means I know shawn christian is my son. And I want you to bring him to me right now. My asthma felt anything but normal.

[Somber music]

Chad: Still smells like your perfume.

Leo: Ugh, these drinks were not cheap. Of course, I’m worth it.

[Suspenseful music]

Will: Well, this is interesting.

Leo: What? I’m not allowed to enjoy a happy hour?

Will: Sure, you are, but last I heard, you had no job, no sugar daddy, and no other source of income.

Leo: So?

Will: So where did you get all that cash?

Rafe: Who gave you the bracelet?

Nancy: Uh, chloe.

Rafe: Really? What was the occasion?

Nancy: Uh, n-no occasion. She just saw it and thought of me.

Rafe: And when was that that she, uh, thought of you?

Nancy: A couple weeks ago.

Rafe: I see.

Clyde: Hey, what’s with all the questions?

Rafe: Oh, are you looking for a gift for your bride? Ah, I heard that you and nicole just tied the knot. Congratulations.

Rafe: Thanks. But my interest in your bracelet is related to a police investigation.

Nancy: What do you mean?

Rafe: I mean I have reason to believe that the piece of jewelry you’re wearing is stolen.

Shawn: Oh, my god, ciara, how could you even ask me that? I mean, of course, I don’t have feelings for jan. No, I am in love with my wife, and her name is belle. All right, I love her, and I’m never gonna stop loving her.

Ciara: Okay, good, thank god.

Shawn: Yeah, but jan–jan is the mother of my son. So whether I like it or not, she and I are permanently connected.

Ciara: Yes, and she is very willing to exploit that connection. Shawn, I told you so many times you have to watch out for her.

Shawn: Yes, I know, because she’s devious, she’s manipulative, and she is violent. Do you think I don’t remember? You think that I just completely forgot?

Ciara: Well, you’re not really acting like it.

Shawn: Just because–because there is a baby involved, and that baby is my son.

Ciara: Yes, and that baby only exists because she teamed up with the devil to trick you into sleeping with her.

Shawn: Okay, and you’re reminding me of that, why? What–what–what–what is the point, ciara, huh?

Ciara: Shawn, the point is, I’m just–I’m worried. I’m worried that you are gonna get caught up in all the good that comes with having this miraculous bundle of joy, and you will forget that jan’s reason for all this is to try to replace belle.

Shawn: Look, ciara, I–

Ciara: Look, shawn, I’m just saying this lunatic has tried to come between you guys so many times, and now, this is the closest she’s ever been. You don’t think she’s gonna stop, do you? Shawn, this is the woman who tried to kill your wife multiple times because she’s convinced that she belongs with you.

Shawn: Look, there is no doubt that jan’s feelings for me are–are–they’re sick and they’re twisted. But the feelings that she has for our son, they’re pure, and they are sincere. I mean, she–this baby means the world to her.

Ciara: Good, good. So when she serves her time, she can see him, but right now, she needs to go back to statesville.

Shawn: Look, as a cop and as a citizen, look, ciara, I cannot agree with you more. But as a father, I know– I know how heartbreaking that’s going to be for her. And it’s not gonna be good for the baby, either, to not have its mother.

Jan: Evan, prison is no place for a baby.

Evan: I’m his father. I wanna see him, damn it!

Jan: And how would I explain this little visit to shawn?

Evan: Just tell him the truth–the kid isn’t his.

Jan: Oh, right, great idea. Except for the fact that it would completely ruin my life!

Evan: Well, I don’t care how you swing it, but I wanna meet my little boy, and if you don’t get him here in the next 30 minutes, my next call is to detective brady.

Jan: [Sighs] Relax, jan. There’s a solution to every problem. You just have to find it. Maybe if I take shawn christian to visit evan, I could reason with him and convince him to keep his stupid mouth shut.

Evan: That’s right, little man, I’m your dad.

Jan: Okay, we need to wrap this up. I need to get back to the hospital before anyone realizes that I’m gone.

Evan: Fine. I love you, sweet boy.

[Suspenseful music]

Jan: Okay, I’ve done my part. Now it is time for you to do yours.

Evan: Which is?

Jan: No one can know that shawn christian is your son. That has to stay strictly between us.

Evan: I’m sorry, jan, but I just can’t do that.

Jan: Why not?

Evan: Because I love you, and I want the whole world to know it! That’s why I got this tattoo!

Jan: Is that supposed to be me?

Evan: I’m gonna get our son on my other pec.

Jan: Evan, you can’t!

Evan: Well, that way, I’ll have my family with me wherever I go. And that’s what I want us to be, a family.

[Panting]

Jan: Oh, no.

Evan: You’re not just over my heart, jan. You’re in it. So will you please do the honor of becoming mrs. Jan spears-frears?

Jan: Ugh. There is no way I am going to become mrs. Jan spears-frears. I am destined to become jan brady. But if shawn finds out the baby isn’t his, I’ll lose him forever. And I can’t let that happen.

Ciara: Can’t let what happen?

Ben: Thank you. Mmm.

[Both chuckle] Dr. Evans, do you remember when you came to bayview to evaluate me? See if I was fit to return to society?

Marlena: Of course.

Ben: And you took some flak for it.

Marlena: Not as much as you took.

Ben: Yeah. That’s because nobody wanted me in salem, for good reason. Chad gave me a handful of cash. He drove me to the edge of town and told me to keep going. I was so lost, overwhelmed. But then that’s where I found ciara after she crashed her bike. That is when my life began again. I still can’t believe how lucky I am, really.

Marlena: It wasn’t luck, ben. You have worked very hard to prove that you deserved a second chance.

Ben: That chance wouldn’t even be possible without you. Dr. Evans, your guidance, your support, that is what made me into the man I am today. I have a job. I have a wife. I have a baby. I owe everything to you. And I don’t know if I am ever gonna be able to repay you.

Will: So where’d you get all the money?

Leo: You really need to get a life, wilhelmina. Your obsession with me is disturbing.

Will: Hmm. It’s possible that you went back to prostitution. But who would pay for a washed-up, old twink?

Leo: Ah! Am I washed up? Take that back, you bitch!

Will: Hmm, I hit a nerve?

Leo: You’d best walk away before my last cosmo ends up all over that cheap suit. Why are you so dressed up anyway? You look like you’re going to a funeral.

Will: Just came from one. We buried my cousin abigail today.

Leo: I didn’t realize.

Will: Yeah, like you give a damn.

[Somber music]

Chad: I have to get out of here.

Nancy: There must be some mistake. My daughter would never steal a bracelet.

Rafe: Well, maybe she bought it from someone who stole it.

Nancy: Chloe would not get me a gift from a disreputable source. That’s not something you do to someone you care about.

Rafe: Hmm. Did she tell you where she got it?

Nancy: I didn’t ask.

Rafe: Well, it’s a pretty distinctive piece, and it matches the photos I got from chad.

Nancy: Chad dimera?

Rafe: Yeah. As you know, his wife was murdered recently.

Nancy: I know. I was at the funeral earlier. It’s a terrible tragedy. But what does that have to do with my bracelet?

Rafe: Well, we have reason to believe that the person who murdered abigail also stole some of her jewelry, including that bracelet.

Clyde: You gotta be kidding me.

Rafe: No. I’m gonna call chloe and have her meet us down at the station.

Nancy: Clyde!

Clyde: Uh, no need to do that. Chloe didn’t give her the bracelet. I did. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Rafe: Then why did you say that chloe gave you the bracelet?

Clyde: That’s my fault.

Nancy: Clyde’s a very private person.

Rafe: I don’t understand.

Clyde: Of course you don’T. You’re a cop. But I’m a parolee. Even though I bought that bracelet with money I made from a legit job, folks are gonna doubt that ’cause of my past. I didn’t want nancy to deal with all the suspicion and snide comments, so I told her to say that she’d gotten it from somebody else. Now, after all, what I do with my money is my business, nobody else’S.

Rafe: Hmm. Except when it ties you to a murder case.

Nancy: No, it doesn’t tie clyde to anything! He would never kill abigail! Would you?

Clyde: Of course not.

Rafe: Then where’d you get the bracelet?

Clyde: I bought it off a guy.

Rafe: What guy?

Chad: [Panting]

[Tense music]

Leo: Wait, chad, chad, wait.

Marlena: Ben. You don’t have to repay me.

Ben: I just–I don’t think I could ever thank you enough.

Marlena: You know what? Just seeing you happy, in love, that’s all the thanks I need. I’m just so–ah! I’m so proud of you.

Ben: Thank you, thank you. And, um, I’m very serious about keeping up with our sessions. No matter where in the hell we are in the world, I wanna continue working on myself. I wanna keep making progress.

Marlena: I’m so glad to hear that. And I will always be here for virtual visits whenever you need me.

Ben: Thank you. I appreciate that. It’s definitely not gonna be the same as being in the room with you, though. I’m gonna miss you a lot.

Marlena: I’m gonna miss you, too, ben.

[Chuckles]

Will: Oh, I’m sorry. Am I interrupting?

Ben: Hey.

Marlena: No, no, not at all. I was just talking with ben. He shared some–some very good news.

Ciara: What were you saying when I walked in?

Jan: I was, um, I was just saying that I might have to go back to prison soon. And I’m worried that my son will forget me. And I can’t let that happen.

Ciara: [Sighs] Right, well, shawn understands the importance of a son having a relationship with his mother, so I wouldn’t really stress about it if I were you.

Jan: You’re right. Your brother is a saint. He’s taken such good care of me.

Ciara: Yeah, I actually just ran into him when he was out to go get some food for you. He told me that I should keep you company.

Jan: You see that? He’s so thoughtful. Do you also wanna see your nephew?

Ciara: Yes, I would love to, um, to say goodbye, actually.

Jan: Goodbye?

Ciara: Yeah, well, ben and i are gonna go sail around the world with little bo. Yeah, we leave tomorrow.

Jan: How marvelous. I assume you’re–you’re taking the boat that your mom gave you?

Ciara: What, you know about that?

Jan: Your delightful grandmother julie came by yesterday to visit with the baby, and she mentioned it. The “fancy face V.”

Ciara: Hmm. Wow. Actually, it’s called “living in cin.”

Jan: That’s an odd name.

Ciara: Yeah, yeah. It’s spelled c-I-N. It’s short for ciara and ben.

Jan: Oh, like bennifer.

Ciara: Yeah.

Jan: You must be super excited.

Ciara: Yeah, we are, we are. Uh, it’s gonna be really nice to get away for a little bit and spend some quality time as a family, you know?

Jan: That does sound perfect. My a1c stayed here,

Clyde: Some guy came in here a couple of weeks ago, paying in cash. And I admired his money clip.

Rafe: Well, interesting. A money clip was one of the things that were stolen from the crime scene. Can you describe it?

Clyde: Expensive. When I admired it, he asked me if I wanted to buy it. I said no. Then he told me he had some other items for sale.

Rafe: And that didn’t seem at all suspicious to you?

Clyde: Well, he said his aunt had passed away, and he was just trying to liquidate her assets, per her wishes.

Rafe: Huh. In a pub?

Clyde: Well, maybe it wasn’t the most appropriate venue, but he was just trying to do right by his kin. I didn’t see any harm in looking at what else he had to offer.

Rafe: Uh-huh. So he showed you that bracelet, which you bought for nancy?

Clyde: Yeah. I thought it would make a nice gift. I had no idea it was stolen.

Nancy: Well, that explains it. I mean, he wa–he was tricked. He was victimized by a crook!

Rafe: Well, why don’t you tell me more about this guy you supposedly met? What was his name?

Clyde: I don’t know. I didn’t ask him.

Rafe: Uh-huh. Can you describe him?

Clyde: He was, um, average-looking.

Rafe: Can you be more specific?

Clyde: I wish I could, but i was looking at the bracelet, not him, you know. And as I told you before, I paid in cash, so–

Rafe: So there’s no way you can prove that he actually exists.

Nancy: Stop it! You know, this is exactly what clyde was talking about! People being suspicious when he’s done nothing wrong! Rafe, you have to see that he’s telling the truth. You just have to know that.

Rafe: Well, all I know is that he was in possession of an item that was stolen from a woman who was recently murdered. And that’s all I need to place him under arrest.

Chad: What do you want?

Leo: I-I just heard that abigail’s funeral was today, and I wanted to offer my condolences.

Chad: Wait, you? You hated abigail. You blamed her for breaking up you and craig.

Leo: Well, I-I didn’t appreciate the way the two of you worked together to torpedo my relationship.

Chad: Didn’t appreciate? You–you co–you considered us enemies! You vowed to get your revenge!

Leo: Well, I’m–I’m done with all that. I was just telling someone the other day that it weighs on me a lot, what I did to you and abigail.

Chad: Wait, in–in that interview you gave with that– with that trashy magazine? The one where you told all those disgusting lies about how I wanted to cheat on my wife with you? You came after my wife! Okay, the woman that I love!

Leo: You have no idea how much I regret that.

Chad: Did you know that people would–would–would come up to her and tell her how–that they thought that she was clueless? She was being harassed in horton town square! Now–now, abby, as always, she handled it with grace and dignity. Me? I wanted to sue you. Hell, I wanted killed you.

Leo: Look, I will admit that when my one chance at happiness was gleefully and deliberately destroyed, I was angry at a lot of people, and–and that included abigail. But I did not want her to die. I am really sorry that she’s gone. I hope you believe that.

Chad: Sure. Yeah, whatever you say.

Leo: I mean it, chad. I am so sorry for you and your children. I-I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through, losing their mom at such a young age. Thomas, he’s such a sweet boy.

Chad: How do you know my son?

Will: So should I call you captain weston now, or…?

Ben: You know, let’s give it a month. If I don’t sink the ship by then, maybe we’ll consider it.

Will: All right, yeah. You know, I hope, um, sleeping in tight quarters doesn’t remind you of our time as cellmates.

Ben: Well, thankfully, ciara doesn’t snore like you did.

Will: I don’t snore.

Ben: Like a chainsaw. I went to the commissary to get earplugs. It didn’t even work.

Will: Excuse–re–remind why I was your best man again?

Ben: I think you took pity on me because I had no friends.

Will: Yeah, exactly, so maybe keep that in mind next time you wanna spread a vicious rumor about me.

Ben: Oh, my god, all right. Well, you know what I do remember? Being floored the first time you said you considered me being a friend after everything I tried to do to you.

Will: Well, I mean, like I said then, that’s water under the bridge. Now we’re good. You know that.

Ben: Yeah, all right.

Will: And, I mean, look how far you’ve come. You–you have a son. And I am really glad I got to meet the little guy before you took off.

Ben: Me, too, man. You know, there is something we could use, though, before we take off on our trip.

Will: Oh, name it.

When you agreed to stand up for me, I told you that when ciara and i eventually decided to have kids, we’re coming to you and sonny for the parenting tips. So lay ’em on me.

Will: Well, you figured out how to get that thing on. That’s, uh, that’s, like, genius level.

Ben: This wasn’t easy. But, uh, maybe–maybe something I can use when he’s not sleeping 18 hours a day, you know?

Will: Okay. Um, well, kids love stories. So you should tell bo all about his cousin arianna. And when you come back, they can be friends like us.

Ben: It’s a deal.

Will: I don’t snore.

Ciara: You seem a little nervous, jan.

Jan: No, just hungry.

Shawn: I hope so ’cause I got you a double chili cheeseburger. Here you go. Hey, sis.

Shawn: Is, uh, everything okay?

Ciara: Fine.

Jan: Ciara was just, uh, telling me about her plans to travel the world. Little shawn is gonna miss his auntie, uncle, and cousin so much.

Ciara: Yeah, well, we’re gonna miss him too.

Jan: Shawn, why don’t you, uh, take ciara to go see the baby?

Ciara: Oh, no, that’s fine. I can just sneak a peek on my way out.

Jan: But if your brother takes you, then you can actually hold him.

Ciara: Wait, that’s allowed?

Shawn: Yeah, I mean, I-i don’t see why it’s not, yeah.

Ciara: Okay. Yeah, I would love that.

Shawn: Uh, you gonna be okay on your own?

Jan: Yeah, I’m about to wolf this entire thing down, so it’s probably best if I don’t have an audience. It’s gonna get ugly.

Shawn: All right, um, all right, we’ll be back in a little bit then, okay?

Jan: Give him a kiss from mommy.

Shawn: Will do.

[Tense music]

Jan: Sorry to hijack your plans, ciara, but I need this getaway way more than you do. The only people who will be living in cin will be me, shawn, and our baby. I was taking my antidepressant daily,

Jan: How’d it go?

Ciara: My nephew is absolutely adorable. Um, please don’t forget to send me those pictures that you took of me holding him.

Shawn: Ahh…

[Phone chirps] Done.

Ciara: Perfect.

Shawn: There it goes.

Ciara: Thank you.

Jan: He looks so much like your brother, right?

Ciara: Um, actually, I don’t–I don’t see it.

Jan: What?

Ciara: Mm.

Ciara: Okay. Um, I actually have to get going, so.

Shawn: Uh, I’ll walk you out.

Ben: Well, I should probably get the little dude home. We got a big day tomorrow. First, his christening. And then our big sendoff from the docks.

Will: Well, um, good luck with everything.

Ben: Thanks, man. Dr. Evans, we’ll be seeing you tomorrow, yeah? St. Luke’s?

Marlena: I can’t wait.

Ben: Oh, me either. All right.

Marlena: Bye.

Leo: Well, obviously, I-i don’t know your son personally. Thomas and I have never met. Uh, but gwen–gwen told me stories from when she was your nanny. He seems like a sweet boy.

Chad: Yeah. He’s a lot like his mom.

Leo: Do the police have any leads on abigail’s killer?

Chad: Not yet.

Leo: Well, I hope they bring whoever did this to justice. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

Chad: Thanks.

Nancy: Rafe, you can’t be serious! Clyde is innocent!

Rafe: Well, then he should have nothing to worry about.

Clyde: Hey, will you hold the dog and pony show till we get outside? It wouldn’t be so great for roman if his patrons saw me hauled off in cuffs, you know?

Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, fine. Nancy, I’m gonna need the bracelet.

Nancy: This–this just–ah, this just can’t be happening!

Clyde: I am really sorry i got you mixed up in this thing, but I swear to you, I did not kill abigail.

Nancy: Oh, of course not, but tell me what I can do.

Clyde: Oh, don’t you worry about a thing. I’m gonna have this taken care of in no time.

Nancy: Okay, but call me if you need me.

Jan: Mommy has exciting news, shawn christian. We’re going on an adventure far, far away from salem.

Ciara: I can’t believe this is our last night in salem.

Ben: I know. That’s why I figured we’d go with the chinese, because who knows when we’re gonna be able to get general tso’s again?

Ciara: Mm. Ben, are we crazy for doing this? Picking up our entire life and, like, leaving with a newborn?

Ben: This is what you wanted to do, right?

Ciara: Yeah, no. This is what I wanted. But, like, what if we’re just being way too impulsive, and this is gonna end up to be a really bad decision?

Ben: Hmm. Um, there’s only one way to find out.

Both: Oh!

Ben: [Laughs] Oh.

Marlena: Nancy? Are you all right?

Nancy: Oh, yeah. It was a beautiful funeral, wasn’t it? You must just think I’m so silly falling apart like this.

Marlena: Not at all.

Nancy: I, um… I just keep thinking about my girls, chloe and joy, and how much we owe abigail. And now I’m never gonna be able to tell her how grateful I am.

Julie: Thank you for bringing us home, rafe.

Rafe: It was my pleasure.

Julie: Though I still feel guilty about leaving the wake so early–especially since we were hosting it.

Doug: Everyone will understand, honey. Although, I don’t think it was necessary to have two escorts home.

Ciara: Well, I wanted to see you guys home. Also, I wanted a moment to talk alone with the three of you. I have some news to share.

Julie: Ciara, darling, I can’t stand any more bad news today.

Doug: We don’t know that it’s gonna be bad news, honey.

Ciara: No, no, it’s not bad news–at least ben and I don’t think so. We’re leaving salem.

Julie: What?

Jan: How was abigail’s funeral? I’m so sorry you had to be there all alone. You know I would’ve been there with you if I could’ve.

Shawn: I wasn’t alone, jan. I was with my family. But I did just get some good news–I ran into dr. Goldfarb out in the hallway and he said little shawn has gained weight. Two ounces. And he’s been doing really well maintaining his body temperature and his oxygen levels. So that means we get to hold him.

Jan: Shawn, that’s the best news ever! Oh!

Orpheus: I didn’t mean to startle you, son. Still giving me the silent treatment, huh? I see. Okay, well… in that case, I’ll take my cards back.

Evan: I don’t care about your stupid cards.

Orpheus: Gotcha.

Evan: You’re unbelievable, you know that? This whole time you knew i was having a kid with jan spears and you kept that from me. What the hell would make you think I’d want to talk to you?

Orpheus: I’ve already explained it to you, son. It’s for your own good. I need something from, uh… from jan. And once I get it, we’ll be out of here. So, sue me. I was afraid that if you knew that she was having your kid you’d get too emotional and you wouldn’t be able to keep your mouth shut and play the game.

Evan: This isn’t a game. Zoe took my son, my first son, to the other side of the world. Something else you kept from me! And, yeah, you’re right, if i can’t be with david, I’d like to be a father to my other son. Because that’s what fathers are supposed to do, dad– take care of their sons!

Orpheus: And you will. And I’ll help you. Which I have, by not telling you. You’re welcome. Look. Now that, uh…now that the baby’s born, we don’t need jan spears. We just need to get something from her. One little thing. And, boy, let me tell you, once we get it…

[Shuffling cards] It’s gonna rock people’s worlds.

Ciara: Well, I was kind of hoping you guys would be happy for us.

Julie: Happy that you’re leaving salem?

Rafe: Yeah, and since when do you have a boat?

Ciara: Well, since mom just gave us one. And, yeah, and I was telling ben all about how mom and dad used to sail the world with shawn and how shawn and belle did the same thing with claire when she was a little girl. It’s kind of a family tradition at this point. And, I don’t know, we just thought we would keep the tradition going. I mean, you guys spent half your lives cruising around the world. You know exactly what I’m talking about. I mean, I’m pretty sure you’re the ones who started it.

Julie: No. No, we did not start it. Your father started it. He was in the merchant marines, he had a wanderlust. We’re from salem. We’ll always come back to salem.

Ciara: And so will we, grandma julie. I promise.

Clyde: So you’re just gonna take my baby grandson and sail away?

Ben: Dad, I know this is kind of out of the blue, but ciara and I really want to do this. And you’re upset.

Clyde: Well, how am i supposed to feel?

Ben: I know you’re just getting to know the baby and all, but–

Clyde: Well, that’s not the only reason I’m upset.

Evan: But you’re still not going to tell me what info jan has or what you’re planning to do with it?

Orpheus: Okay. But this stays between us. You got it? I mean it.

Evan: Yeah, of course.

Orpheus: Okay, sit down. Jan’s sidled up close to shawn, right? She’s gonna get the password– she’s gonna get the password to the salem pd mainframe and give it to me.

Evan: What does that get you?

Orpheus: Once my guys get into the system, we’ll have access to everything. The whole shebang. The da’s office, the mayor. I’ll be able to get my hands on files that not even the commish and detective brady himself can touch.

Evan: Well, tell me, what’s in the files?

Orpheus: Best you don’t know the details.

Evan: Here we go again.

Orpheus: All you need to know, boy, is that once I get what I need, we’ll both be out of here and you’ll be where you want to be. Where you ought to be. With your son.

Jan: Shawn, I’ve been dreaming of this moment since i first found out I was pregnant. Our son.

Nurse: Are you ready to hold him?

Jan: Are you kidding me? Oh. Hello. Hello, little shawn. I’m your– it’s me, mommy. Do you see how he’s looking at me? We can’t keep our eyes off each other. Ohh… and look, look, little one, daddy’s right here too. And daddy and mommy love you so much.

Shawn: Yeah, we do. As sensodyne scientists

Ciara: We are planning on taking the same route my parents did. First down the salem river, chicago, then up the st. Lawrence seaway. Yeah, and then ultimately out into the wide open sea, nothing but sky and the water. And our first stop is mom. She absolutely cannot wait to meet little bo.

Julie: Perhaps you could interest her in paying us a visit? Maybe on some less exotic form of transport? Perhaps a first-class airline ticket?

Ciara: Well, maybe she will come back with us.

Doug: Hear, hear.

Julie: I suppose we have plenty of time to be together as you’re planning for this great endeavor. When are you going to leave?

Ciara: Uh…tomorrow.

Julie: Tomorrow?

Doug: What’s the rush?

Ciara: Will, little bo is at his most portable form right now, and the older he gets, the harder it’ll be to do this and we’re afraid that if we put it off we’ll never be able to get to do it. The way that ben and I see it, we’re at a crossroads right now. Either I get back to work and we put little bo in a daycare or we set sail for a grand adventure.

Doug: Well, I do love a grand adventure.

Rafe: Yeah, it sounds like you got it all figured out.

Ciara: Yeah, well, there is one loose end we have to tie up.

Clyde: Well, I hate to put a damper on your excitement, but I think you’re forgetting something.

Ben: What’s that?

Clyde: Me. You know it’s a condition of my parole that I live with you. So while you’re sailing off into the sunset, they’ll be hauling my butt back to statesville.

Ben: Dad. Ciara and I did not forget about you, okay?

Clyde: You didn’t exactly welcome me with open arms to begin with, and ciara’s been counting the days till she’s rid of me, I know that.

Ben: Ciara and I made a promise to take care of you. And we will.

Clyde: You gonna take me with you? I don’t know how the man might feel about that, though, technically, I suppose, I would be living on some houseboat or something with you. But what will I say to my new girlfriend?

Marlena: Why do you want to thank abigail?

Nancy: Abigail and chad interrupted craig and leo’s wedding. They helped save craig from marrying that money-grubbing, slimy bigamist.

Marlena: Yes, that’s right.

Nancy: I, um, I also want to thank you, marlena, for all the help you’ve given me in our therapy sessions.

Marlena: Well, you’ve worked hard–I think you made a lot of progress.

Nancy: Thank you. I also have something else that’s helped me accept what happened between craig and me.

Marlena: What is that?

Nancy: I have a new boyfriend.

Marlena: Oh! I’m– I’m glad, I– I guess i thought that might’ve come up in our therapy sessions.

Nancy: Truthfully, I thought maybe you would judge him. I mean, he’s a wonderful person. He’s kind, he’s family-oriented, he’s employed. But he, um, just got out of prison recently. His name is clyde.

Marlena: Clyde weston?

Nancy: I-I see you know he’s an ex-con.

Marlena: I do.

Nancy: But marlena, isn’t prison about redemption? I mean, just because you did something wrong in the past doesn’t mean that you’re condemned to be a bad person for the rest of your life, right?

Orpheus: Jan’s going to be heading back to the big house soon… and when she does, you’ll be the only parent that little boy has.

Evan: Assuming good ol’ reliable jan comes through for you. You know that she’s living with a police detective. How do you plan on getting in touch with her without shawn brady knowing and bring down the hammer?

Orpheus: You’re forgetting your father’s A… what’d they say? Criminal mastermind. Yeah. I like that. That’s got a nice ring to it. I mailed jan a burner phone disguised as junk mail. And now I’m gonna signal her to get herself alone and wait for my call.

Jan: Oh my goodness, he’s got my finger. What a grip. Ohh… look at these little hands. His little fingernails. His skin is so soft. Shawn, he’s just–he’s perfect. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Our little miracle. And I know I told julie that he looks just like me, but really, he looks just like you.

Shawn: I’m not sure I see it.

Jan: Well he’s, you know, he’s a preemie, so he looks a little bit like an alien right now, but a little preemie alien version of you. And soon he’ll be a big, healthy, strong version. You’ll see. Like pulsing, electric shocks,

Marlena: Clyde is working very hard to turn his life around.

Nancy: Oh, he is. I’m so glad that you see it. He really, really is. And, well, roman says that he is the best cook the pub has had since caroline brady. And you know that’s high praise. I just know you do. And, well, marlena, I haven’t had this much fun since… well, never. And…

Marlena: I’m happy for you.

Nancy: Thank you. And I…I know that if his son, who was the necktie killer, can be reformed and accepted, well, then anyone can.

Ben: So you and nancy are getting pretty serious, huh?

Clyde: Well, uh, let’s just say I wouldn’t want to up and leave at this juncture.

Ben: Well, that’s good to hear, pop. Because I’m sorry… you can’t leave. You’ve been working really hard trying to prove yourself, and I’m proud of you. I wouldn’t want to see you violate your parole, dad. You come with us, that would easily be misconstrued as you skipping town.

Clyde: [Sighs] So what’s the alternative? I need you here, but you’re leaving. I can’t skip town with you guys. So what do you got?

Ben: You don’t necessarily need me here. You need a responsible party to vouch for you.

Clyde: Ha ha ha. We both know how popular I am in salem, right?

Ben: Why don’t you just live here?

Julie: But what happens if roman does not agree to let clyde stay at the pub?

Doug: Julie, if you’re thinking of lobbying roman to torpedo ben and ciara’s plans, I don’t–

Julie: Torpedo? Me? Torpedo?

Ciara: I don’t think that uncle roman will say no, and if clyde doesn’t like the idea–

Rafe: Well, I can think of one place that will welcome clyde back with open arms. They even offer three hots and a cot.

Ciara: Rafe.

Julie: Talking about prison.

Doug: Oh, thanks a lot.

Ciara: I actually don’t think it’ll come to that.

Rafe: Just trying to help.

Ciara: Ben really loves his dad, and he would do anything to help him, but we agreed that our own family comes first.

Doug: As well it should.

Julie: Well, all family is important. I mean, I’m just saying.

[Laughing]

Doug: Ciara, we understand being young and in love and wanting to see the world. It’ll be a magical time for the two of you. Now the three of you. But while you’re out there conquering the world, we’re gonna be back here missing you terribly.

Julie: Counting the days till you come home.

Doug: Yes.

Ciara: [Sighs] I love you both. Thank you so much for understanding.

Doug: [Murmuring]

Ciara: [Murmurs response]

Julie: Understanding. Yeah, well, I wouldn’t exactly say I’m understanding, but I’m not gonna try to talk you out of this because you’re your mother’s daughter, and you’re both stubborn.

Ciara: Yes, we are.

[Sniffles]

Rafe: And I’m gonna expect frequent updates on my godson.

Ciara: Oh, you’ll absolutely be getting them because the boat has wi-fi, so expect a constant bombardment of pictures and videos.

Rafe: You better send ’em. I’m telling you, okay?

Ciara: I will, I promise.

Rafe: Okay, good. We got it cleared up.

Ciara: Yeah. Also, there’s one more thing. I kind of wanted to have bo’s christening before we left. I know it’s short notice and you have a lot on your plate–

Rafe: No, no, listen, when it comes to baby bo, my schedule is wide open. Any time works.

Ciara: Thank you, rafe.

Rafe: Yeah.

Ciara: Oh, you have always been there for us.

Rafe: And I always will.

Ciara: And that is why you are the godfather.

Rafe: And for that, I… I’m honored. I’m so honored. I love you.

Ciara: Love you. Oh, my god, and now I have to go tell shawn. I have to tell him about our plans. Wish me luck.

Jan: I think shawn christian is going to look just like you. His chin, his fingers.

Shawn: Ha. His fingers?

Jan: Yes, they’re so long. Which is why he’s gonna be a concert pianist. And we will be so proud. But we’ll be so proud of our little guy no matter what, right? Oh…shawn.

Shawn: What? What is it?

Jan: I’m so happy that our son is getting healthier and that he’s going to be leaving the hospital, but… when that happens…shawn, i don’t want to go back to prison.

[Phone rings] Who is it?

Shawn: It’s statesville. Detective brady. Yeah, I’ll accept the call.

Evan: Detective brady? It’s evan frears.

Shawn: Evan? I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Clyde: You want me to live here? In the pub?

Ben: Why not? Maybe you could roll out a little sleeping bag behind the bar, make a little fort out of table cloths? You and nancy, huh? It could be kind of fun. You know there are rooms upstairs, right?

Clyde: Yeah. Also, that’s where roman lives, with his girlfriend, who happens to be my ex. And what makes you think roman will ever agree to such a thing in the first place?

Ben: Ciara’s gonna talk to him. She’ll set it all up. And as far as kate goes, you’re a spoken-for man now, anyway, right?

Marlena: You know, you’re right. Ben has worked very hard to overcome his illness and get his life back on track.

Nancy: And so has clyde.

Marlena: Mm. H– how serious are the two of you?

Nancy: Well, we really haven’t put a label on it. Oh, but… marlena, he did give me this beautiful bracelet. Oh. I didn’t want to wear it to the funeral because it was too flashy, but… I could put it back on now. Marlena… I, um, I can’t go back in there. That’s all right, isn’t it? I mean, you can tell abigail’s family that I’m so sorry.

Marlena: Sure. I can do that. Nancy, it’s a beautiful bracelet.

Nancy: It is, isn’t it? Oh, I am one lucky lady.

Shawn: What the hell do you want, evan?

Jan: Hang up! He’s a maniac!

Evan: I know this might be inappropriate, but I just didn’t know how else to go about it.

Shawn: Spit it out or I’m hanging up.

Evan: I wanted to apologize for what I did to your sister and your nephew. I feel awful. I wasn’t in my right state of mind.

Shawn: Oh, because the devil made you do it?

Evan: I’m sorry.

Shawn: You’re sorry? Oh, that’s all you have to say?

Evan: I guess I’m just… I’m just looking for some sort of redemption.

Shawn: Yeah, well, find it someplace else and lose my my number, okay?

Jan: Shawn, what did he say?

Shawn: Look, he– he wanted to apologize for what he did to ciara and bo.

Jan: That’s it? He said he was sorry?

Shawn: I don’t– I don’t know what his deal is, but he…he said he was looking for redemption.

Jan: Did you say redemption?

Orpheus: You’re gonna have to find a way to–

Jan: I’ve been around the block a couple times, all right? If I said I can get it, I’ll get it.

Orpheus: Good, jan. That’s good. I’m gonna… I’m gonna mail you a burner phone. Find a safe place to hide it. And then I’m gonna signal you with a word, a magic word. When you hear the word, you have five minutes to get the phone, get yourself alone, and wait for my call.

Jan: So? What’s the magic word?

Orpheus: “Remption.”

Jan: [Sighs] I don’t know why evan frears thinks he deserves redemption.

Shawn: Listen, can we not talk about evan? Is that okay? All right.

Jan: Yeah.

Shawn: Come on.

Jan: I’m actually starving. Nursing will do that to you. So, do you mind if you can once again save me from the slop in this place and get me a chili cheeseburger from buddy’s?

Shawn: Yes, okay, yeah, I’ll, uh, I’ll be right back, all right?

Jan: Oh, god, come on. Come on! God. Oh. What did orpheus tell evan? Oh, you’re going to ruin everything. I didn’t win the lawsuit, but everybody knows I wrote that song.

Julie: I just can’t believe this. Ciara is leaving town too? I mean, after losing eli and lani and the twins and abigail?

Doug: Well, ciara now is a grown woman, honey. With a family of her own. She has her whole life ahead to settle down. Which she will, eventually. In the meantime, you got me, baby, you got me.

Julie: Oh, of course. Thank god I do.

Doug: Rafe, we won’t keep you any longer. We know you have a lot on your plate.

Rafe: Thank you. Yes, I do.

Julie: Speaking of that, could you tell us has there been any progress in this search to find out who killed abigail?

Rafe: Well, uh, all we know so far is that the killer was able to get into abigail’s bedroom, despite the dimeras’ tight security. There were no signs of forced entry. And, um, we don’t know how the perpetrator got on or off the grounds, and there was no weapon left behind. The only solid clue that we do have is of the jewelry and the money that was stolen. Now, fortunately, chad took pictures of the jewelry, which was quite distinctive. So, we find the jewelry, and we’ll be able to find the killer or person that will lead us to them.

Nancy: Oh. Hello, ben.

Ben: Oh, hey.

Nancy: It’s so nice to see you again.

Ben: Hey, nancy, nice to see you too.

Nancy: Oh.

Ben: Well, I actually have some errands I need to run. Should probably get going. But I just wanted to make sure that you’re okay with all this, dad.

Clyde: Yeah, yeah, it sounds like a hell of an adventure. I’m happy for you. But I’m not gonna lie to you. I’M…gonna miss you and the little one something fierce.

Ben: We’re gonna miss you, too, pop. I know, uh… we spent more time apart than together over the years, and the times that we did have together weren’t always the best…but we’ll be back. And you and I are gonna pick up right where we left off.

Clyde: I’m gonna hold you to that.

Ben: Bye, nancy.

[Phone rings]

Jan: [Gasps] Oh, god. Hello? Yes, I’ll accept the call. I thought you were gonna call me and give me the magic word.

Orpheus: Hello to you too, jan.

Jan: What the hell did you tell evan? Why are you even talking to him anyway? He’s not supposed to know anything about the baby being his–you promised me.

Orpheus: Calm down, jan. He doesn’t know a thing. He’s just a means to an end. I used him to call shawn because he had a plausible reason to call him. And don’t worry about the paternity of shawn christian. It’s a well-kept secret.

Jan: How do you know my baby’s name?

Orpheus: I know all, jan. So don’t cross me. Because I’ll know that too. I kept my end of the bargain. So, did you get shawn’s password to salem pd?

Jan: Yeah. I have it. I have it memorized. And I know things too. So don’t cross me either.

Orpheus: Noted. Let’s have it.

Jan: Okay, ready? It’s lower case x, 92, f as in frank– wait a minute–maybe it’s upper case x, lower case F.

Orpheus: I thought you said you knew things, jan.

Jan: Yeah, just hold on a sec–you’re making me nervous. Um… okay, I got it, I got it. It’s x, 92, f, 5, smiley face emoji, 29.

Orpheus: Smiley face emoji?

Jan: Yeah. You know, the little sideways smiley face?

Orpheus: You mean a colon and a closed parenthesis?

Jan: Yeah. That. The curvy one at the end, not the curvy one at the beginning.

Orpheus: You’re sure? The smiley face isn’t winking, is it, jan?

Jan: I’m positive. No winks.

Orpheus: Okay. Pleasure doing business with you. Time to get to work. My moderate to severe plaque psoriasis…

Nancy: So, out of nowhere, your son decides he’s going to be captain ahab, and he didn’t even consult with you first or officially set up a workable situation for you?

Clyde: He said that ciara would talk to roman.

Nancy: When?

Clyde: They wanted to tell their nearest and dearest first.

Nancy: Okay, so…what if– what if roman decides he doesn’t want to take responsibility for you?

Clyde: I guess it’s back to the slammer for me.

Nancy: Oh, no it’s not! Um…if it turns out that you can’t stay here at the pub, then…

Clyde: What?

Nancy: Maybe you can move in with me?

Marlena: Ben. What a nice surprise. Come in. And hello, little bo.

Marlena: A rough one for everybody. I can’t even imagine what abigail’s family is going through, it… can’t be easy for you either.

Ben: I just felt it’d be inappropriate for me to attend the funeral. Can’t help feeling somehow selfish for wanting to grieve her.

Marlena: Of course you would grieve her. Why would that be selfish? Ben, you are such a good and kind man. Believe that, all right? And if I can do anything at all to help, please let me know.

Ben: Thank you. Dr. Evans, that’s actually what I wanted to come talk to you about. Do you offer any type of, um… virtual therapy?

[Elevator bell dings]

Shawn: Oh, hey, sis. What are you doing here?

Ciara: Well, I came to see you.

Shawn: Uh, why? I mean, I just saw you an hour ago.

Ciara: Yeah, well, abigail’s funeral didn’t really seem like the place to tell you.

Shawn: Tell me what?

Evan: So you got what you needed from jan?

Orpheus: Oh, I think so. She knows there’ll be hell to pay if she screwed this up.

Evan: So when you hack into the mainframe or whatever, how long will it be until I see my baby?

Orpheus: In a couple weeks. Months, max.

Evan: Months?

Orpheus: We’re playing the long game, son. 3d chess takes time. I’ll get my guys on it right away. Be patient, my boy.

Evan: [Sighs] I don’t think I can do that.

Evan: This isn’t orpheus. It’s evan.

Jan: Evan?

Evan: You remember. Your old friend from prison.

Jan: What do you want?

Evan: I want my baby.

Ciara: Please don’t be mad.

Shawn: Look, I’m not mad, all right? I mean, how could i be mad when I did the exact same thing with belle and claire? And you know what? I don’t regret a single second of it–some of the best times of our life were on the “fancy face iv.”

Ciara: Look, I know you’re going through a lot right now, and trust me, I want to be there for you more than anything, but I– I’m just a video call away. You know that, right?

Shawn: You know what? I’m gonna take you up on that, so watch out.

Ciara: Good. You better. And please come see us off tomorrow. And I promise, watch, I’ll be back before you know it–we’re not gonna spend nearly as much time as you guys did out there. I’m very looking forward to watching baby bo and baby shawn grow up together side-by-side. But in the meantime, I’m really gonna miss you.

Shawn: Not as much as I’m gonna miss you.

Doug: Somehow, I know everything is gonna turn out all right, my darling.

Julie: I just can’t get over so many goodbyes.

Doug: Yes. Eli and lani and jules and carver, and now ciara and ben and little bo. But, honey, they’ll all be coming back.

Julie: Abigail won’t come back. I know I should be grateful. I know I should be counting my blessings for all the years I’ve been here, for all the time with my family, for all the time with you. But I can’t help but think that chad will never have those years with abigail.

Doug: Well, that’s another reason I’m here. I’ll be counting the blessings for both of us. And top of my list is you. I love you. I love you so much, my darling… julie olson williams banning anderson.

Nancy: Oh, that was kind of forward of me, wasn’t it? I mean, we’ve just been seeing each other for a short time and all, and then… why don’t we just forget i mentioned it?

Clyde: No, no, no, it’s very kind of you, I just– I’m a little surprised, is all. You’ve just come through a really difficult divorce.

Nancy: Well, these are extenuating circumstances. I mean, clyde, if things don’t work out with roman, then, well, maybe you’d consider me your backup plan?

Clyde: [Chuckles] Nancy, I would be honored to have you as my backup plan.

Jack: [Sighs]

Steve: Jack, I thought we were meeting you at the church.

Jack: [Sighs] Yeah, yeah, I just–I had to get out of the house.

Steve: What happened?

Jack: Gwen called and offered her condolences, and jj… jj didn’t react well.

Kayla: What did he do?

Jack: I don’t really wanna go into it. I wanna talk about abigail.

Kayla: That’s what we’re here for.

Jack: Good, all right, so where are you at? Well, come on. Come on, I’m ready to hear it. Tell me what your latest thinking is.

Steve: Jack…

Jack: Please, steve, talk to me. Tell me who killed my daughter.

Anna: Ej, you were here the night that abigail was attacked. Did you see anyone skulking around, perhaps a british brunette with a very large chip on her shoulder?

Ej: [Clears throat] I, um– no, I was out most of the evening. Shortly after I got back, I heard chad screaming for help and found him holding abigail as she was slipping away.

Anna: Oh, that poor man. I can’t even imagine how awful that must’ve been, walking into his room, finding his wife bleeding to death on their very own bed. I was taking my antidepressant daily,

Lucas: Why would your mother’s kidnapping have anything to do with abigail’s murder?

Will: Because she reached out to me.

Lucas: Who did?

Will: Abigail. She was doing an investigative piece for “the spectator” and asked if we could compare notes.

Lucas: But why would she think you’d know anything?

Will: Because my mom was the victim, and since I’m a reporter too, she probably figured that I’d wanna find out the truth.

Lucas: Wait, so I still don’t get the connection between the murder and the kidnapping.

Will: Abigail called me the night before she died.

Lucas: So?

Will: So I’m sure I’m not the only person that she called. What if someone she tried to tap as a source wasn’t happy that she was looking into this?

Lucas: I guess they wouldn’t talk to her.

Will: And what if word got out to someone directly involved in mom’s kidnapping?

Lucas: I still don’t know where you’re going with this.

Will: Dad, whoever kidnapped mom obviously had a very personal reason to wanna shut abigail down. What if they did? What if they were so desperate to keep her from finding out the truth and putting it out there that they killed her?

Jack: You must have a lead, a suspect, something.

Steve: I’m sorry, jack. Nothing yet. You told me that you were gonna lend your expertise to the police, use your extensive experience as a pi to help them solve this case.

Steve: I am.

Jack: Really? Well, it looks like you’re just sitting here casually just drinking coffee while the rest of us are out there trying to actually find the animal who killed my daughter! Steve, I–you know, I’ve–

Steve: It’s okay. Hey, it’s okay.

Jack: I just–I need something, please. Give me something, something, anything, please.

Kayla: You know, I read that some jewelry was taken from abigail’s bedroom. I mean, don’t they think that maybe it could’ve been a robbery?

Steve: Well, rafe is trying to track down what was taken and see if that leads anywhere.

Jack: But you don’t think it will.

Steve: I think the jewelry is significant, but my instincts are telling me that robbery was not the motive.

Jack: Why not?

Steve: Because nothing else of value was taken from the house, and–

Jack: And? And what?

Steve: Never mind.

Jack: Oh, please, please, no. Steve, you got to tell me. Please?

Steve: The way she was attacked, it seems personal.

Kayla: You think that the person who did this knew her?

Steve: That is what the knife suggests to me.

Kayla: [Sighs]

Steve: It wasn’t random or circumstantial. I think she was targeted.

Jack: Why? If abigail wasn’t killed because she walked in on a robbery, then why? What reason would someone have to want to hurt her?

Ej: [Sighs]

Tony: [Sighs] I’m so sorry about abigail.

[Sighs]

Anna: Mm.

[Sobs] I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry for what I said just now.

Chad: Ah, it’s fine–

Anna: No, it’s not. It was really insensitive. But I didn’t realize you were standing right there.

[Sniffles] How are thomas and charlotte doing?

Chad: They seem okay. I have a number for a therapist if they need to talk to someone. They’re at john and marlena’s right now, getting ready for the funeral.

Tony: They’re coming?

Chad: Yeah. Marlena thinks that it’ll be a good idea mainly because they’re… they’re having a hard time accepting the fact that their mom’s gone. So, um… you know, it’ll just–marlena thinks that it’ll help with the grieving process for them to be able to say goodbye.

Jj: Damn, I sh–I shouldn’t have said that about gwen.

Jennifer: Oh, no, jj, it’s okay. Emotions are running very high right now–

Jj: Which is why I should’ve kept my mouth shut. I didn’t mean to upset dad.

Jennifer: I know, I know, I know.

Jj: It’s just, she called. It set me off. She was horrible to abigail.

Jennifer: Yes, she was.

Jj: Well, at least she’s in a cell now.

Jennifer: Yes, and that is absolutely where she deserves to be. But it makes your father very sad because he really wanted abigail and gwen to make peace so he could have both his daughters in his life, and now…

Jj: He still has me. You both do.

Jennifer: I know. Of course we do, and thank god for that. Anyway, after gwen’s wedding went all to hell, I told your father that I would support whatever he decided he wanted his relationship with gwen to be, but that I would never trust her again.

Jj: And you still feel that way?

Jennifer: Well, yes. I would support your father no matter what.

Jj: I swear, mom, you are a saint.

Jennifer: Oh, no.

[Chuckles] Hardly. But I do try to put myself in your dad’s shoes, and he loves gwen, and when you’re a parent, nothing your child does will ever make you stop loving them.

Jj: I’ve come close a couple times.

Jennifer: Oh, no, no, no, no. Parents may feel anger or disappointment, but that doesn’t change the love. That is forever. When your child is born, they take a piece of your heart. Everything that they feel– pain, joy, love– you feel that right along with them… and when you lose your child, you lose that piece of your heart.

[Crying]

[Dramatic music]

Kate: Jack, I’m so sorry about abigail.

Jack: Thank you, thank you.

Kate: You know that chad is like a son to me, and abigail made him so happy. She was a loving mother and such a loving wife. She’s a wonderful person. I admired her. My condolences to both of you as well.

Steve: Thanks.

Kayla: Thanks, kate.

Kate: So I just couldn’t help overhearing, as I was walking up, you are investigating what happened?

Steve: Well, not officially, just helping out.

Kate: Mm-hmm. Your brother or the police?

Steve: Both.

Kayla: Steve, and roman, and all of us are determined to find out who did this and get justice for abigail.

Kate: Of course. I’m just a little surprised that you’re discussing it today.

Steve: Well, everyone is anxious to get answers. I’m sure you understand, given what you’re going through with your son, with philip.

Kate: Yes–well, yes, but I guess I just assumed that you would be focusing on celebrating abigail’s life, honoring what she meant to all of us, being grateful for all of the people who understand what a tremendous loss it is, and sharing in our grief.

Jack: You’re right. I should be going. I’ll see you all at the service.

Kayla: We’ll see you there.

Lucas: If you think the kidnapper and the murderer are the same person, that means ej killed abigail.

Will: Wasn’t ej’s conviction overturned?

Lucas: Doesn’t mean he’s innocent.

Will: Didn’t the devil plant evidence on his computer?

Lucas: Listen, he framed an already guilty man, okay? This whole thing points at ej. It does; he’s ruthless, he’s heartless. He wanted your mother to pay.

Will: I know you hate him, but do you really think ej would stab abigail to death? Abigail was his family.

Lucas: You’re right. You’re right, okay? Maybe that’s a little bit too far, even for him, even if he was in a dark place, and his back was against the wall.

[Sighs] You know what? We should get to the church. Why don’t I give you a lift?

Will: No, I’m, uh, I’m meeting sonny. I’ll see you over there.

Lucas: You sure?

Will: Yeah.

Lucas: Okay. I love you.

Will: Love you.

Lucas: Hey, listen, about your theory about ej, son, I wouldn’t tell chad about this.

Will: Dad, the man’s about to bury his wife. Do you really think I would just tell him that maybe his brother was the one who killed her?

[Dramatic music]

Chad: Will’s in town, so he and sonny drove me over here so I could get dressed for the funeral.

Ej: We have a little time, so why don’t you visit with tony and anna, then I’ll have harold press your suit.

Chad: I’m sure that it’s fine.

Ej: I was gonna have him freshen up some of my wardrobe anyway, so why don’t I get him to bring your suit to my room, and–

Chad: Stop, all right? I know what you’re doing, and I appreciate it, but I have to go in the room at some point.

Anna: But it doesn’t have to be today.

Chad: I’ll be all right. I can do it.

We really had our hands full with our two-year-old.

Kayla: I don’t know why I agreed to do this. I should’ve told jack to find somebody else–find somebody who can write.

Steve: [Sighs] Baby, you’re overthinking it.

Kayla: No, I don’t want to disappoint anybody.

[Sighs] Especially abigail, not the way I disappointed her that night.

Steve: Sweetness, please.

Kayla: I know that I did everything in my power to save her. But I couldn’t! I mean, the least I could do is let everybody know how much she means to me. I just don’t know how.

[Chuckles] What are you doing?

Steve: Telling you how much you mean to me. You understood that, right?

Kayla: You said you loved me.

Steve: I didn’t say anything. But I did speak from my heart. I expressed myself. That’s all you need to do. Nobody knows how to do that better than you.

Jack: Where’s your mother?

Jj: She’s upstairs trying to find the necklace abigail gave her.

Jack: I should help her find that.

Jj: Hey, dad, I’m sorry about what I said before. I shouldn’t have blown up like that, especially today.

Jack: I shouldn’t have stormed out.

Jj: Well, you’re angry. I’m angry too.

Jack: You are certainly entitled to your feelings about gwen after everything that she did to this family.

Jj: I’m not angry about gwen. I’m angry about abigail.

[Sniffles] Why did this happen?

Jack: I don’t know.

Jj: I miss her. I miss her.

Jack: Me too, son. Me too.

Anna: Jennifer wrote such a lovely tribute to abigail.

Ej: Mm, she really did.

Tony: But how sad for a mother to have to write her own daughter’s obituary.

Anna: Oh. It’s an unimaginable loss, mostly, of course, for abigail’s immediate family, but for all of us really. I honestly don’t know how we’re all supposed to go on without her.

[Soft music]

My asthma felt anything but normal.

Steve: All done?

Kayla: I think so. Thank you. You really helped me.

Steve: Good, I’m glad.

Kayla: You know, when you signed to me, I realized that I was limiting myself, thinking there was only one way to express my feelings about abigail. But that’s not true. There are words that I can use that say how much I love her without writing a eulogy.

Steve: What do you mean?

Kayla: I have been a part of so many ceremonies where somebody read something beautiful, and moving, and so suited to the occasion, but they didn’t write it themselves.

Steve: You mean like a song?

Kayla: Or maybe a poem. I remember abigail telling me that she loved E.E. Cummings. So I thought who better to help me express how much I loved her. You wanna hear it?

Steve: Yeah.

Kayla: “I carry your heart with me. I carry it in my heart. I am never without it. Anywhere I go, you go, my dear, and whatever is done by only me, is your doing, my darling.”

Jennifer: [Crying]

[Sighs]

[Soft music]

Tony: [Sighs]

Paulina: How are you doing, baby?

Lani: I’m holding on. Justin told me how you put the screws to trask to get this plea deal. Thank you.

Paulina: No need to ever thank me. I spent 30 years pretending you weren’t my daughter. No way I’m letting trask or anybody else take my baby away from me.

Julie: Eli, it’s time. I’m gonna dress jules and carver right now.

Eli: Okay.

Julie: Sweetheart, statesville is just a short drive away, and you and I, and all the people that love her are gonna take the twins to visit lani every chance we get.

Eli: Yeah.

[Doorbell rings] Hey.

Rafe: Hey, man. Yeah, listen, I’m sorry to do this, but about lani’s deal, there’s a problem.

[Quiet dramatic music]

Kristen: [Sighs]

Guard: Dimera, you have a visitor.

Kristen: A visitor? Who is it?

[Dramatic music]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Eli: Don’t tell me trask is backing out of the deal. She just signed off on it a few hours ago.

Rafe: Lani’s problem isn’t with trask or with the deal.

Eli: What’s going on?

Rafe: The problem is with the prisoner we already have in custody.

Kristen: I am surprised to see you.

Brady: Well, you used your only phone call to reach out to me, didn’t you?

Kristen: I was hoping you’d bring rachel to visit me.

Brady: Well, I didn’T.

Kristen: Yeah, I can see that.

Brady: Just trying to protect her. As she gets older, it’s getting harder and harder to keep the truth away from her.

Kristen: And what truth is that, brady?

Brady: That her mother has done horrible things and that her mother is a criminal.

[Dramatic music]

Xander: Oh, there’s my favorite ex-wife.

Chanel: Right, your ex-wife with the big mouth. Sorry about the other day. I thought for sure sarah knew we were married.

Xander: Oh, don’t worry about it. She’s fine with it.

Chanel: Really? Like, fine-fine?

Xander: Sarah has absolutely no problem with you at all.

Chanel: Oh.

Sarah: Get the hell away from him, you bitch!

[Tense electronic music]

Migraine attacks?

Chanel: I thought you said she didn’t have a problem with me.

Xander: That’s what she told me.

Sarah: I warned you. Stay away!

Chanel: What the hell?

Xander: Sarah, what the hell are you doing?

Sarah: I’m saving you from kristen dimera. I’m saving your life!

[Dramatic music]

Kristen: So you came down here to what, insult me? You didn’t think I was suffering enough, so you came down here to remind me what a terrible person I am?

Brady: No, kristen, I came here to ask you one question. Did you frame me for what happened to philip?

Kristen: How–

Brady: And do you know if he’s dead or alive?

Kristen: Oh, my gosh.

[Laughs] How many times do I have to say it, and how many different ways? I had nothing to do with philip’s disappearance, and why do you even care?

Brady: Why do I even care? Why in the hell would you even ask me that?

Kristen: Oh… [Chuckles] Right. It’s really obvious why you care, because if philip is alive, he might just come between you and chloe.

Lani: Listen, I–I know you risked everything for me, and my confessing can put you in trouble, so I will tell them that I asked you to lie.

Paulina: Oh, here we go again. Look, like I told you, I’m going to be fine.

Lani: Yeah, but trask is not gonna let this go.

Paulina: Well, I’m not afraid of her. What I’m afraid of right now is that my daughter, instead of being proud of herself for what she did–instead of making peace with her decision, she’s worrying about her mama.

Lani: How can I not worry? I mean, ugh, what you did for me–my god, I couldn’t take it anymore. Like, you understand why I confessed?

Paulina: Yes, yes.

Lani: Don’t you?

Paulina: Yes, baby. I understand, I understand. You’ve explained it all to me. We’ve been over this–

Lani: I tried to keep quiet, and the more that I stuffed it down, the more that tr kept haunting me, and everywhere I went, I saw him, and he just kept reminding me of what I did, and I knew that it would not stop unless I did something about it.

Theo: Maybe I shouldn’t leave today.

Abe: No, mm-mm. Son, you have to live your life. Your sister understands.

Theo: You know, when we found out that lani’s not really my sister, I thought things might change.

Abe: But they haven’t, have they?

Theo: If anything, we’ve grown closer because we chose it, you know? And I know it’s the same for you.

Abe: Yeah, it is. You know, I’m blessed to have two wonderful children– you and lani. I could not love you more.

Rafe: Yeah, so it’s no secret that there’s some bad blood between your wife and vivian alamain.

Eli: So what? What does that old bat have to do with lani’s plea deal?

Rafe: Well, I just got word from one of our prison informants that vivian knows that lani is set to enter statesville.

Eli: Oh, my god.

Rafe: Yeah, and she has made it clear that lani is on her hit list. Now, vivian’s been thrown into solitary, but she’s a–you know, she’s got some dangerous allies on the inside, people who would not hesitate to hurt lani. It’s not safe for her there.

Eli: What’s the alternative?

Rafe: Well, the alternative is that she serve out her sentence at another facility.

Eli: Where?

Rafe: Right.

Eli: Rafe, these are all out of state.

Rafe: I know.

Eli: Then how are we supposed to visit? I mean, lani will go crazy if she’s not close to the kids.

Rafe: Yeah, I, uh– I don’t know man, I just– I don’t see any other way.

[Uneasy music]

Eli: Wait a minute. I think I have an idea how this will work. Time. It’s life’s most precious commodity,

Xander: Sarah…

Sarah: What are you doing?

Xander: That–that is not kristen dimera.

Sarah: What?

Xander: It’s chanel.

Chanel: What is going on?

Sarah: Oh, my god. Chanel, I’m so sorry.

Chanel: Uh, yeah, no worries. I got someplace I need to be.

Sarah: What did I do?

Xander: Hey, it’s okay. Nobody got hurt.

Sarah: Why do I keep– I can’t believe that this is still happening. Oh, my god, xander.

[Sniffles] I can’t get away from her. I can’t get away from kristen dimera.

[Dramatic music]

Kristen: So you and chloe are together, aren’t you?

Brady: How did you know that?

Kristen: Oh, I make it my business to know what or who the father of my child is doing. What, are you gonna stand there and deny it?

Brady: No, I won’t deny it. We are a couple. We are together despite your best efforts to try to keep us apart.

Kristen: Well, it turns out I was right, wasn’t I? All that time you claimed to be in love with me, you were just angling to be with her. Here’s something you need to know, brady. I’m not giving up, not on our daughter, and not on you. Chloe may have won this battle, but I will definitely win the next.

Brady: No, no, no, this is not a war. This is not a battle, kristen. This is my life. How many people do you wanna make collateral damage by trying to insert yourself into my life and rachel’s? It’s never gonna happen. It will never happen.

[Intriguing music]

Theo: Mom’s side of the family is far from traditional. But I saw how my nonno loved kristen and peter just as much as his biological children.

Abe: Well, there’s not much I agree with stefano dimera on, but in this, he was right. Family is what you make of it.

Theo: Oh, we better get to the station so we can see lani.

Abe: Right, yeah, and uh, we need to make one stop along the way.

Lani: I watched you and dad, so happy and hopeful about your future, and I realized that I couldn’t live with this lie any longer.

Paulina: Oh, poor baby, it must’ve been eating you up.

Lani: Do you understand why I had to take responsibility for my father’s murder?

Paulina: Oh, I understand better than anyone. I know all too well what it’s like having that man haunt you.

Lani: Of course you do.

Paulina: But because of you, lani, he won’t be able to hurt anybody anymore. You saved us, and I will forever be grateful. Come on, honey. Oh… you know I’m gonna be the first in line every day when they allow visitors and on some of those days that they don’T.

Lani: [Laughs] So what, are you gonna just talk your way into the state penitentiary?

Paulina: Girl, girl, have you met me?

Lani: [Laughs]

Paulina: [Sighs]

Eli: So what do you think of my idea?

Rafe: I, um, think I hate it.

[Chuckles] But I’ll make some calls and see if I can make it happen.

Eli: Thank you.

Rafe: Yeah, buddy. You hang in there, pal, all right?

Eli: Yeah.

Rafe: It’s all gonna work out.

Eli: I hope so.

Rafe: Yeah. Talk to you soon.

Eli: Okay.

Julie: Eli, was that rafe?

Eli: Yeah, yeah, that was rafe. I was just talking to him about some stuff– just about today. Grandma, I need to talk to you. Why don’t you have a seat?

Julie: What’s wrong? Is lani okay?

Eli: Yeah, lani’s fine. Please, have a seat, grandma. So it looks like lani’s gonna have to spend her time a bit further away from home than we expected.

Julie: Oh, no, that’s terrible. Well, my heart would break in two if you and the twins had to move far away.

Eli: Well, I hope you don’t mean that, because the twins and I–we can’t be far away from lani. We may have to leave salem. And tonight’s winning numbers are 18,

Kristen: What is this collateral damage you’re talking about?

Brady: [Scoffs] You want me to run down a list of the people that have gotten hurt in your cross fire? Wanna start with sarah?

Kristen: Oh, what about her?

Brady: What about her? You stole her life, kristen. She’s an innocent victim in one of your damn schemes.

Kristen: Oh, whatever, brady. I heard that she and xander are back together again, so no harm, no foul, right?

Brady: Wrong. Even from in here, you are still torturing her.

Sarah: I’ve been on the adjusted dose for two weeks, and I just thought that this was going to stop.

Xander: Um, well, they had said it might take some time. Just take a breath. I’d hate for you to, you know, do something you might later regret.

Sarah: Ugh, you mean, like, murder your ex-wife?

Xander: Yeah, like that.

Sarah: [Sighs] No, you’re right. Ugh, kristen’s probably, like, a million miles away from salem right now anyway.

Rafe: Well, I’m afraid that’s not true. Kristen is currently down at the station.

Xander: Wait, she’s in custody?

Rafe: Yes, she is, till they transfer her back to statesville, where they will hopefully lock her up and throw away the key.

Eli: So if rafe can make it happen, there’s a minimum security facility in maryland. It’s about a 30-minute drive from my mother’s house in D.C.

Julie: What about your job?

Eli: Well, a good cop can always find work. You remember my old fbi mentor, billy?

Julie: Uh, yes, of course I do.

Eli: Well, he’s always asking me to rejoin the bureau. I’m sure he can find me a job in a office in D.C.

Julie: Sounds like a plan.

Eli: I hope so.

Julie: Yeah. Yeah, I hope it all works out. Well, I’ll get jules and carver–

Eli: Oh, grandma…

Julie: It just–I knew I was going to be saying goodbye to lani today. I… I didn’t expect I’d be losing you and the twins too.

Paulina: Mm.

Abe: Oh.

Paulina: [Chuckles]

Abe: Can I get in on this?

Paulina: Oh, abraham! Oh, no, no–abraham, now, uh-uh. Don’t you start crying now. We’ve already finished with that part already.

Lani: And, dad, I am not going that far, and it’s not forever. So save your tears.

Abe: What if I told you these were happy tears?

Lani: [Laughs]

Abe: Well, before you go, could I get you to sign these papers for me?

Lani: What is it?

[Dramatic music]

Oh, my god.

Paulina: What? Wh–what? What is this all about?

Lani: Dad, are you serious?

Paulina: Abe?

Lani: You wanna adopt me?

Paulina: Oh!

[Both chuckle]

Abe: You’re my daughter in every way that counts. I just– I just wanna make it legal.

Brady: Thanks to the drug that you injected sarah with– not to mention the extra dose that your friend gwen gave her– she’s having hallucinations still. You know, she had an episode the other day where she attacked victor.

Kristen: Well, you don’t have to be hallucinating to wanna do that.

Brady: This is not a joke.

Kristen: [Sighs] I am just saying that your grandfather has always had a way of bringing out violent impulses.

Brady: [Sighs] You just don’t get it, do you? You can’t take responsibility for your actions.

Kristen: Well, I’m in here, aren’t I?

Brady: But you have zero empathy for the people that you hurt, and I have to think long and hard as to whether it’s even a good idea for you to see rachel ever again.

Kristen: You don’t get to decide that. I am her mother, brady.

Brady: [Sighs]

Kristen: What is this?

Brady: This is a valentine that your daughter made for her mother.

Kristen: [Sighs] You–you’re about 4 1/2 months late, brady.

Brady: I didn’t know where to send it. I held onto it so I could get it to you.

[Tender music]

Kristen: [Laughs] “Will you be my valentine, mommy? I love you, and I miss you.”

Brady: After they transfer you to statesville, we’ll talk again.

Xander: Oh, no, where are you going?

Sarah: To see kristen.

Xander: Oh, I don’t think that’s a very good idea.

Sarah: She and gwen are the reason I’m like this.

Xander: At least let me come with you.

Sarah: No. I need to do this alone.

Xander: You know how dangerous she can be.

Sarah: She’s locked up. There are guards and iron bars between us. There’s nothing she can do to hurt me anymore.

Xander: But what about what you can do to her?

Julie: You know, even now, when I look at you, I see traits of your father. You have–you have david’s slow, wonderful smile, and–and the way you love, eli–so fiercely and so true.

Eli: He must’ve got that from you.

Julie: [Laughs] Pretty much. And we’re so completely different, but we’re kindred spirits, and even if we disagree about things–important things–I know that you know we’re always on each other’s team.

Julie: Like right now. All I wanna do is lock you in a box and keep you in salem forever.

Eli: [Laughs]

Julie: I’m not gonna do it… ’cause you leaving is right. It’s what’s right for your family.

[Dramatic music]

Chanel: Hey, you.

Theo: Hey, chanel.

Chanel: Hey. What’s going on in there?

Theo: Um, my dad brought a surprise for lani: Adoption papers.

Chanel: Really?

Theo: Yeah, he wants to make it official. He’s gonna ask your sister to be his lawful daughter, which means that she’s gonna be my sister again too.

Chanel: She was always your sister.

Theo: Yeah.

Chanel: So what does that make us?

Theo: [Chuckles] Uh, family.

Chanel: Family.

Theo: [Chuckles]

Lani: I–I had no idea you were doing this.

Abe: Well, it was kind of a last-minute thing, and–

Lani: [Laughs]

Abe: So, um…

[Sniffles] If you would just sign this, and I will file it with the county clerk, and we’ll be good to go.

Lani: [Chuckles] It’s already a done deal in my heart, dad.

Abe: [Chuckles]

Lani: Let the record show that I am your daughter.

[Both laugh]

Paulina: Amen!

Lani: [Laughing] Um… there’s one other thing that needs to be made right before I go. I have made it a point to always let you know that tamara would always be my mother, and that you would just be my auntie P. But now I’ve seen all that you have done for me and all the sacrifices that you have made for me, and I can say for sure now that you are my mother too.

[Chuckles]

Julie: Okay, no more maudlin moments.

Eli: [Chuckles]

Julie: Time to get you and the twins ready to go to the police station to be with lani.

[Sniffles]

Eli: Uh, grandma, I’m not ready yet.

Julie: Oh, why not?

Eli: I’d like to spend a few more moments with a woman I love and admire–my hero.

Julie: [Chuckles]

Julie: No kidding?

[Laughter]

Abe: Yeah, it’s–she’s already my daughter, and we’re gonna make it official–again.

Lani: Pretty great, huh? And how lucky am I?

Julie: Oh, I think it’s clear that abe has gotten the good end of the deal.

[Laughter]

Abe: Oh, yeah, you don’t have to tell me.

Eli: That’s–that’s good news. Nah, I’m sorry, that’s great news. But I have some news as well.

Paulina: Just give me five minutes alone in a room with this vivian alamain, and we’ll see–we’ll see if she still wants to mess with our daughter.

Eli: As entertaining as that sounds, I’m afraid lani going to statesville is not an option.

Lani: Wait, what? Then where am I going?

Eli: There’s a minimum security facility in maryland. Rafe’s trying to work out a transfer.

Abe: Maryland?

Eli: It’s a short drive from my mother’s house. Baby, if rafe can make this happen, the twins and I are going with you.

Lani: You’re gonna–you’re gonna move to D.C.?

Paulina: With the twins?

Lani: Honey, should– shouldn’t we talk about this before you decide on it?

Rafe: It’s done.

Eli: You got the approval?

Rafe: I did, yeah. Lani can serve out her sentence at the facility in maryland, and well, as far as prisons go, it’s a nice, safe place.

Lani: I can’t believe you are doing this for me.

Eli: Lani, everything that I do is for you.

Lani: [Sighs]

Rafe: Hey, I’m glad it worked out for you.

[Indistinct] It’s a drag to be losing two of my best cops, though… and my best friends.

Eli: I’m gonna miss you.

Kristen: Mm, I heard about your hallucinations.

Sarah: You destroyed my life, kristen. I’m doing everything I can to get it back.

Sarah: [Chuckles] Well, at least I know that the real you is in here, and you can’t hurt anyone else. I hope they never let you out.

[Door clicks shut]

Rafe: Well, I will let you all say your goodbyes, and I’ll ask detective grant to take you to transport, all right?

Eli: Thank you.

Rafe: Yeah.

Lani: Thank you.

Rafe: All right.

Julie: You’re the last person in the world that even needs to hear this– but you must be strong for your husband, for your babies.

Lani: I will do my best, and if I start to wear down, I’ll just ask myself, “what would julie do?”

[Chuckles]

Julie: What a great notion. Do you suppose we could make that a rule for everybody to follow?

[Laughter] I love you so.

Chanel: I just got used to having a big sister around.

Theo: I know what you mean.

Lani: [Sniffles]

[Sighs] You’ll still have a big sister, and don’t think that I’m not gonna be calling you both and giving you grief and asking you all the annoying questions about your love life.

[Laughter]

Chanel: Oh, girl, don’t even.

[Both siffling]

[Chuckles] But I–I really don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t have you these past few years.

Chanel: Well, I owe you. I didn’t wanna be alone with big mama all the way to o’hare.

Theo: [Chuckles] You know, I didn’t mind going. Big mama’s–she’s funny. Everything she thinks comes straight out of her mouth.

Chanel: Mm-hmm, and she wants to be in everybody’s business, especially mine. I don’t think she’s ready for a fluid granddaughter.

Theo: You know, I don’t think my folks are ready for a kid on the spectrum, but I think it worked out. They got used to it.

Chanel: Thanks for saying that.

[Sighs] I got enough to worry about right now. We both do.

Theo: [Sighs] I still can’t believe that lani, at our dad’s wedding, stood up and said that she was the one who shot that guy.

Chanel: Yeah, I knew something was bothering her, but I didn’t think it was that.

Theo: How’s paulina taking it?

Chanel: [Sighs] It’s killing her that she couldn’t protect lani. That’s why I said I’d take big mama to the airport. Her and abe deserve at least one morning together. That’s probably all the honeymoon they’re gonna get.

[Both moaning]

Abe: [Chuckles]

Paulina: [Sighs] Ooh, I woke up this morning, and for a minute, I thought that our wedding was just a dream, and then I saw you beside me.

[Both laugh] Oh, I feel truly blessed, abraham.

Abe: Oh. Two dreams came true in the park yesterday.

Paulina: [Laughs] Oh, look, this is our first morning as married people, and your breakfast is already on the table!

Abe: Oh, cooked, huh?

Paulina: Uh-huh, indeed I did. My world-famous omelets.

Abe: Uh…

Abe: Yeah, they, uh–they look great. They look great.

Paulina: [Chuckles]

Abe: All right. Let’s see here.

Paulina: Uh-huh. [Chuckles]

Abe: The proof is in the egg.

Paulina: [Laughs]

Abe: Mmm.

Paulina: Mmm– oh, that’s terrible! Mm-mm!

[Gags] It’s all dried out! I must’ve cooked it too long.

Abe: [Chuckling]

Paulina: Oh. Ooh. Oh, no.

Abe: It’s all right. It’s all right. Your mind is on lani, and so is mine.

Paulina: Oh, abe. Oh, I worked her whole life to protect her from ray coates, and he got to her anyway! Oh, abe, what’s gonna happen to my little girl?

[Whimpers]

Julie: So tell me about lani. How is she holding up?

Eli: She’s strong.

Julie: I know that.

Eli: And she has justin for a lawyer.

Julie: And he’s the best.

Eli: Yeah, but he has to get the da to agree to a plea deal, and I’m praying that he can keep lani from doing any prison time.

Julie: Every single person at that wedding was ready to take a vow of silence about her confession. She did not have to go to the police and turn herself in.

Eli: I told her that.

Julie: Well, she should’ve listened to you.

Eli: Yeah, she should’ve, but she figured she has to go through this to get past it. My wife’s a better person than I am.

Julie: Don’t say that, sweetheart.

Eli: Justin has to cut that deal for her.

Julie: With melinda trask.

Eli: Yeah, I know, grandma. I know.

Justin: Thank you for making time for me today. I just wanna finalize lani’s plea agreement before the hearing today.

Melinda: Sit down.

Justin: Thank you. I thought we made some real progress last night on the phone. Let’s see here–one count of involuntary manslaughter, two to three years, minimum security facility. I’m pretty sure the judge will sign off on this.

Melinda: Maybe she will, but I won’T.

Justin: That’s not what you said last night.

Melinda: I know what I said. But then I gave it more thought. Lani grant shot her own father to death–an unarmed man who had done nothing to her. If you think I’m gonna let her skate, then you don’t know me that well.

[Door clicks open]

Lani: What’s up, pete?

Pete: You have a visitor.

Lani: That’s why they brought me down? Who is it?

Kristen as susan: Hey, it’s me! [Laughs] Ooh, wait, you know, I know this is a surprise, and I know you don’t know me from a bale of hay, but, detective lani price, I need to talk to you.

Lani: Why?

Kristen as susan: I had me one of my premonitions.

Lani: About me? What? What is it?

Kristen as susan: Well, something told me that you needed to see your best friend.

Lani: Kristen?

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Justin: If this is your idea of a joke, it’s not funny.

Melinda: I’m not known for my sparkling sense of humor.

Justin: [Chuckles] Ray coates may not have done anything directly to lani on the day that he died, but lani’s husband had just remembered that it was ray who shot him. So lani left eli’s hospital room and went directly to her mother’s apartment, where she found her father lying on the ground unconscious. For all she knew, abe was dead, and her mother was next.

Melinda: Okay, save all of this for your summation. Detective grant should’ve arrested coates and run him in. You know I’m right.

Justin: Which is why I agreed to two to three years. Look, detective grant turned herself in.

Melinda: Yeah, took her long enough.

Justin: She is a decorated police officer with a spotless record.

Melinda: Spotless? Are you kidding me?

Justin: I went over it last night!

Melinda: Some things don’t make it on the record. Things get whitewashed.

Justin: Are you talking about stefan dimera? You know damn well that lani only fired that shot because vivian alamain pulled a gun on her. Stefan took that shot for his mother. Ia ruled that it was a clean shoot.

Melinda: This isn’t about stefan dimera. I’m talking about detective grant and what she did for her friend kristen dimera.

Lani: You do realize you’re in a building full of cops, kristen?

Kristen: Yeah, but the getup fooled you, didn’t it?

Lani: It won’t fool them. You used the same getup to walk out of here. You think they don’t remember that?

Kristen: Seems to me you need to worry about yourself.

Lani: I am. I’m scared to death.

Kristen: I know you are. I heard that coates guy shot eli. There was no way I was gonna leave you in here to deal with this alone.

Lani:Ot with it alone.

Kristen: You got me out of here once, and now I’m gonna return the favor.

Lani: Wait, what?

Kristen: Mm-hmm. Everything is all set, and that is no joke. By tonight, you won’t have to worry about spending one minute behind bars.

Abe: Oh, waffles. My favorite.

Paulina: They’re frozen, and the syrup is sugar-free.

Abe: Ah, don’t worry about it. You know, I am having as hard a time getting into the spirit of the honeymoon as you are. But in every way that counts, lani is our daughter.

Paulina: Oh, abe. She is, isn’t she?

[Knocking at door] Mm, now who could that be?

Abe: Don’t know.

Paulina: [Coughs] You?

Abe: Beth? What are you doing here?

Paulina: I thought you left town.

Beth: I heard about what happened to lani. I had to come back. I had to tell her how sorry I am.

Abe: About what?

Beth: For not stopping ray coates when I could have. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Chanel: [Sighs] You finding anything?

Theo: Bunch of stuff about lani’s arrest. Nothing about her getting a deal.

Chanel: Yeah, me too.

Theo: Maybe we just give it a little while. My dad said the hearing’s not even until this afternoon. Look, I’m worried about her too. But the press isn’t gonna have anything to report until the da signs off on a deal.

Chanel: You’re right. You’re better at these things than I am.

Theo: No, I just know salem better than you do. But I’m just as worried about her as you are. That little thing olivia did, getting everybody together down at the station to show our support for lani? It meant a lot to her.

Chanel: It did. I could tell.

Theo: And even with everything that happened, yesterday was amazing. First day that salem had ever celebrated juneteenth, and your mom and my dad were the ones who did it.

Chanel: They did.

Theo: And the wedding was great, including your catch of the bouquet.

Chanel: Uh, just because I caught that thing doesn’t mean I have to be the next person to get married.

Theo: No, but you could be. You just have to decide which twin you wanna spend your life with.

Eli: Grandma, jules is probably gonna be a handful. I’ve had trouble getting her down. Lani’s the one who had the magic touch with that.

Julie: Now, sweetheart, I want you to remember justin is as good as it gets, and I want you to be confident, and I want you to forget about blaming yourself for letting lani turn herself into the police.

Eli: It’s not only that, grandma.

Julie: What do you mean?

Eli: Look, when I remembered that it was tr that shot me, I blurted it out to lani when I should’ve kept my mouth shut and called rafe.

Julie: You had just come out of a coma, sweetheart.

Eli: Yeah, but I told her right before she went to paulina’s house and shot tr.

Julie: Well, you had no control over that.

Eli: Grandma, there’s more. I was okay letting paulina go to prison for lani.

Julie: You were trying to protect your family, darling.

Eli: So was lani. She confessed because she wants the kids to be able to have a mother that they can look up to. I gotta get to the precinct.

Julie: Okay.

Eli: Grandma, thank you for watching the kids on such short notice. I know you got a lot going on.

Julie: Don’t even think about me. You go and see lani, and be sure to tell justin that he’s got to get the best deal he possibly can for her out of melinda trask.

Eli: Thank you.

[Door clicks shut]

Justin: What does kristen dimera have to do with this?

Melinda: Surely you haven’t forgotten that kristen stabbed your uncle victor and escaped custody. She didn’t do that on her own. She was aided and abetted by her friend, detective grant.

Justin: Where did you get that?

Melinda: If you really didn’t know about it, it’s because abe carver made sure the police department closed ranks around the person he believed was his daughter.

Justin: [Sighs] Where’s your proof?

Melinda: Oh, I can prove it. Trust me. Spotless record, you say. It has more spots than a freakin’ dalmatian. Detective grant has been taking the law into her own hands whenever she feels like it, and she’s been getting away with it. But that is going to stop today.

Lani: You gotta get out of here while you still can. It is not your job to save me.

Kristen: Oh, so you’re gonna let the da railroad you?

Lani: No, I’m not. I hired justin. He is trying to get the charges reduced to involuntary manslaughter with the minimum sentence.

Kristen: And one minute away from your children is one minute too many, speaking from bitter personal experience.

Lani: Kristen, I know how much you miss rachel.

Kristen: No, you don’T. No, you don’t–not yet. But if you get sent to prison, you are gonna find out the hard way.

Lani: I am at peace with my decision. Look, I know you risked everything coming here, and I love you for it. But I am asking you to go–now.

Abe: What could you have done to change what lani did?

Beth: All I had to do was speak up. Tr made me tell everybody that he was clean and sober and not violent anymore.

[Sighs] I knew better, but I did it anyway, and as usual, he had a way to make me keep my mouth shut.

Abe: And what was that?

Beth: [Sighs] A part. A lousy part in a movie, and god help me, I went for it.

[Sighs]

Abe: What made you come by eli’s hospital room when I met you? You said you wanted to talk to lani.

Beth: I was gonna tell her about tr. But I chickened out.

[Scoffs] But seeing her sitting there just waiting for her husband’s eyes to open, I just–

[Sighs] I couldn’t get it out of my head. Tr figured out he couldn’t count on me anymore, so…

[Sighs] He beat me black and blue and told me to leave town. After that, I was too afraid to do anything.

Paulina: I know what it’s like to be and live in fear of that man. You can’t blame yourself for anything you did or didn’t do after he beat you. You were just trying to stay alive! He got me pregnant with lani, and I gave her up because I was so afraid of him.

Beth: You did the right thing.

Paulina: Well, she didn’t think so when she found out, but thank god it’s all cleared up now and I can tell the world that she’s mine.

Abe: You know, paulina’s right. You weren’t in the right frame of mind to come forward.

Beth: Everybody’s being so nice to me–you two, eli…

[Sighs] I’m telling you, I don’t deserve it.

Paulina: No, you stop. You stop saying that.

Beth: No, it’s true. I knew what tr was gonna do to you, and I didn’t warn you.

Paulina: Child, what are you talking about?

Justin: If all you have on lani is something you think happened, you’re gonna have a tough time with the judge.

Melinda: Eli grant knows lani let kristen escape. Oh, I see he kept that from you. Think about what that’ll do to his career when I make him testify under oath about his wife’s activities.

Justin: Why have you been sitting on this all these years? Doesn’t seem like your style.

Melinda: I do have a heart, counselor. I gave lani a pass because I do believe in second chances, and it did seem like she was the kind of cop that salem needs. My instinct was wrong, and now I have the chance to correct that error in judgment.

Justin: Is manslaughter off the table?

Melinda: You bet it is.

Justin: So what’s the charge going to be?

Kristen: Fine. Fine, take the da’s lousy deal and tell yourself that it won’t be long before you’re back together with your family. But do I have to remind you what happens to cops when they’re sent to prison?

Lani: You’re just trying to scare me.

Kristen: No, I want to keep you alive. Why won’t you let me help you?

[Door clicks open]

Eli: What the hell?

Kristen as susan: Ah, shoot! Detective grant! I–oh, my goodness! Thank the lord you are here, because I had a dream about your poor wife–

Eli: Just shut up, kristen! I know it’s you!

Kristen as susan: [Stammers]

[Baby crying]

[Doorbell rings]

Julie: It’s okay, jules. Grammy will be right back. Who could that be at the door now?

[Gasps]

Paulina: I–I can’t believe this!

[Scoffs]

Beth: I am so sorry.

Paulina: Oh.

Abe: Paulina. Look, sweetheart, you need to– you need to take a breath. So do I.

[Cell phone rings] Oh, excuse me. Oh, bill from the da’s office.

[Cell phone beeps] Bill, look, I am sorry, but I’m right in the middle of something.

Paulina: Something’s wrong. What–abe, what is it?

Abe: All right. Yes, okay. Well, thank you, bill. Thanks. Thanks for letting me know.

Paulina: Know? Know what?

[Cell phone beeps]

Abe: Da trask is on the war path. Lani’s deal went south.

Paulina: Yeah, but justin said–oh, no. Let’s go.

Beth: Go where?

Paulina: Well, we gotta make this right.

Kristen as susan: Detective eli grant, whatever do you mean? I’m susan banks. Let me just tell you ’bout my dream!

Eli: Do I need to snatch that damn wig off your head to end this?

Kristen: [Sighs] Fine. Fine. Yeah, it’s me.

Lani: Eli, I had no idea.

Kristen: Yeah, I know. Best friends don’t abandon friends in a situation like your wife is in. Listen, I’m ready to help you. I don’t care what happens to me.

Eli: Yeah, well, you better care, ’cause you’re a fugitive. Turn around. Put your hands behind your back.

[Dramatic music]

Lani: Eli. Eli, wait.

Eli: I don’t have a choice. You know how bad it’ll be for you if I let her go?

Justin: Susan banks? What are you doing here?

Kristen as susan: [Gasps] I just had a powerful vision. Yeah, and–and I came here because I had it in the night, and they won’t listen to me. But will you listen to me?

Justin: I’m sure I’ll regret this, but go ahead.

Kristen as susan: Okay, okay. Well, today is gonna be a very, very good day for detective lani grant.

Lani: Justin, what happened?

Justin: I need to speak with my client alone.

Lani: No, no, it’s fine. Just say what you’re gonna say.

Justin: I thought I had a deal with the da last night, but this morning, she did a complete 180.

Eli: What? What’s the charge?

Justin: Murder one, life without parole.

Julie: Well, I’m surprised to see you here. I thought you said you were gonna spend time at home today because of jack and jennifer.

Doug: Yeah.

Julie: Because of abigail. Oh, this is so bad.

Julie: I always think when something like this happens, you should let people know that you’re there, so they can lean on you.

Doug: Not eli, honey. I’m here for you.

Abe: I just heard a rumor that you rejected the plea deal that justin proposed.

Melinda: [Chuckles] You have a spy in this office?

Paulina: So is the rumor true?

Melinda: Yes, it is. I intend to ask for a verdict of murder in the first.

Paulina: Murder in the fir– no damn way!

Melinda: All I’m interested in is justice for tr coates.

Abe: Murder one requires that you prove premeditation. You can’t do that.

Melinda: Watch me. This is my decision, not yours.

Paulina: Well, look at her. Well, she’s just lovin’ this. Well, let me tell you something. Both sides can play hardball.

Melinda: What’s that supposed to be, some kind of threat?

Paulina: You think I’m just gonna stand by and watch you railroad my daughter?

Melinda: Yeah, and what exactly are you gonna do to stop me? Wha–what’s this? Who is she?

Paulina: [Chuckles] Madam district attorney, I want you to meet the ace up my sleeve. I was taking my antidepressant daily,

Doug: I know how much you love eli, honey, and he’s never had to face anything like this before.

Julie: No, he hasn’t, and he doesn’t deserve it, and lani doesn’t deserve it, and those babies… oh, god, doug, why do good people have to deal with so much suffering?

Doug: I do not know. But when they do, they’re lucky if they have someone to lean on as strong as you are.

Julie: Oh…

Doug: But you need someone to lean on too, and baby, that is specifically why I’m here.

Julie: Just when I thought there was no way I could love you anymore…ooh.

[Sighs] Well, lani doesn’t just have me and eli. She has justin too.

Doug: Yes, thank god for that.

Julie: Yeah, thank god for that, and if he can’t get her off, I’m sure he’ll be able to get her back to her family as soon as possible.

[Sighs]

Eli: Murder one? How’d this happen?

Justin: Remember when I asked you if there was anything in your past that I should know about?

Lani: Yeah.

Justin: You left something out, and trask knows what it is.

Kristen as susan: Oh, I don’t like the energy in this room.

Justin: Trask is planning to tell a jury that whenever it works to your advantage, that you are willing to take the law into your own hands.

Lani: Oh, my god.

Justin: Lani, lani, I am not giving up. I’m gonna do everything I can to help you. But I am starting from square one. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Lani: [Sighs]

Eli: You know what he’s talking about? That time that lani helped you escape!

Kristen: Okay, instead of screaming at me, why don’t you let me help your wife?

Eli: Let you help my wife? Just what do you have in mind?

Kristen: You know, I didn’t come here to risk going back to prison just for moral support. I came here to break her out.

Eli: [Scoffs] Oh, my god.

Kristen: All right, I need you to hear me out. I need you to hear me out. This is how it’s gonna go. Kay, no, listen. Trask is gonna ask to get you remanded immediately to statesville, and the judge is gonna grant it.

Lani: Oh, I cannot believe you are talking like this–

Kristen: Okay, but I need you to listen to me. I’m gonna finish this.

Lani: [Sighs]

Kristen: Then they’re gonna– they’re gonna order a van, and you are gonna get on that van, and I am gonna take it from there, and you, you are gonna stay out of my way.

Eli: You’re not gonna tell me what the hell I’m gonna do.

Kristen: Do you want your wife back or not?

Lani: Oh, my god, kristen. Kristen, you need to–you need to stop. Do you hear me? Stop. Please.

Kristen: Hey. Please, I just need you to think this through, honey, please. You know what? You gave tr coates what he had coming to him. Why should that cost you the rest of your life?

Beth: Tr told lani he was a changed man, and she believed him. Everybody did. But I knew he hadn’t changed one bit.

Melinda: I am sorry for what you’ve been through, but your experience changes nothing. We have a saying in the police department. “You don’t get to pick your vic,” and tr coates may have been a reprehensible man, but he is still the victim here, and it is my duty to prosecute his killer.

Paulina: Okay, well, if you will just let us just finish, then, you know, see how you feel about the rest of that pretty little speech. Go ahead. Tell her the rest.

Beth: Tr was getting desperate. He was running out of money, and he said he could still make paulina do anything he wanted. So he was going to romance her, marry her, and then take her somewhere and kill her so he can inherit all her money.

Melinda: [Stammers] How do you know all of this?

Beth: He told me.

Abe: Sounds like premeditated murder.

Melinda: Okay, a crime that mr. Coates did not live to commit. Again, legally, my hands are tied here.

Abe: We are not here to parse the letter of the law, ms. Trask.

Melinda: And why not?

Abe: Do you like your job? Because you are on the fast track to throwing it away. Feeling sluggish or weighed down?

Melinda: It sounds like you’re threatening me, mayor carver. If I don’t let lani grant off with a slap on the wrist, then you’re gonna take away my job?

Paulina: Let me spell it out for you. First, there’s a court of law, and then there’s a court of public opinion.

Abe: Ms. Trask, when the good people of salem realize that you had a chance to stand up for abused women but chose a violent drug addict who beat those women, a man who shot a police officer in cold blood, you know the city council will insist that I demand your immediate resignation.

Melinda: We only have the word of this young woman for most of it. I mean, how am I supposed to– how am I supposed to know she’s reliable?

Beth: I still have the selfies that I took after he beat me. You wanna see them? I warn you, you might lose your breakfast.

Paulina: Those pictures could cause quite a stir if they wind up on page one.

Abe: Well, then, it’s all up to you, ms. Trask. It’s in your hands.

[Baby cooing]

Julie: So, little jules, what do you say? It’s a better place for a nap? You know your daddy wants you to have a nap even though you don’t want to have a nap. You just want a little heart-to-heart.

The four of us will always be looking over our shoulders thinking that maybe this is the day that they finally catch up with me. I won’t do that to them. Justin: I don’t get it. Trask is backing off. The deal I negotiated with her last night is back on– involuntary manslaughter, minimum time.

[Door clicks shut]

Eli: It’s gonna be hard for a while, okay? But we’re gonna put this behind us. It’s gonna be over, baby. Justin, thank you. Thank you so much.

Justin: I don’t think I should take the credit.

Lani: I do. I have some really hard goodbyes ahead of me, but I still have a future, and we have something to look forward to.

Justin: I have to prepare for the hearing, but I’ll call you as soon as everything’s official.

Lani: Thank you.

Eli: I got some unfinished business in there.

Lani: I know. I’ll be right here. I’m sorry it has to be this way.

Eli: But we both know it does. I was expecting a fight.

Kristen: What, you think I’d make a run for it? See, then I’d have to walk right past you.

Kristen: I heard what lani said before, and she’s right. I am so tired of running. So…put on the cuffs. I’m ready to face the music.

Evan: Clear? Didn’t even make sense. You said I had another son with jan spears. What does that even mean?

Orpheus: Look, thought I made it plain enough even for you, but okay. Jan spears gave birth to your son. She’s the mother of the baby. You’re the father. That’s it.

Evan: Can’t be.

Orpheus: Are you saying you did not have sex with that woman? It’s a sin to tell a lie.

Evan: [Sighs]

Jan: It’s just so cruel that they won’t let us see the baby. I thought I might finally get to hold him.

Shawn: You will.

Jan: Are you sure?

Shawn: What, you don’t believe me?

Jan: Of course I do. I know you won’t let them send me to prison without holding him first. Shawn, what would I ever do without you?

[Romantic music]

Ej: Babe, wait, wait. Are you sure this is what you want?

[Knocking at door]

Jj: Hey.

Jj: Pretty bad.

Chad: They came by to see the kids–I wasn’t here. I should go see them.

Jj: Well, they’re at the– at the funeral home making arrangements and–

[Knocking at door] I think that’s them now. I’ll get the door.

Chad: I will. Hey.

[Chuckles]

Jennifer: [Chuckles]

Orpheus: Come on now. Your romantic life can’t be so chock-a-block that you don’t remember whether you slept with her or not. She is a woman. Maybe that’ll set her apart– prick your memory, as it were.

[Door clicks open]

[Door closes]

Jan: Wow, I appreciate the privacy.

Evan: This is statesville. There’s no such thing.

Jan: You work here?

Evan: Yup. I pull down an 8 per hour. I’m goin’ up to 10 once I figure out how to work the floor polish here.

Jan: I like a man with drive.

Evan: I’m evan frears.

Jan: Jan, jan spears.

Evan: We rhyme.

Jan: Clearly, we were made for each other.

Evan: Cheer up, okay? This place isn’t so bad once you get used to it.

Jan: It’s not prison that’s got me down. I just lost the love of my life. It was the worst christmas ever.

Jennifer: Sweetheart, sit, please. Um… so the service is the day after tomorrow, and the funeral director wanted to know if there was something that we wanted abigail to wear. I wondered if you wanted to pick something out.

Chad: Ah, I don’t–

[Chuckles] I don’t think– I don’t think I could do that.

Ej: That was wonderful. You are wonderful.

Belle: [Chuckles] Thank you. I mean not “thank you” for thinking I’m wonderful.

Ej: [Chuckles] I didn’t think that’s what you meant.

Belle: I meant…

[Clears throat] Thank you for a lot of things. You know, these last few weeks– few months–have made me feel really out at sea and alone. But not when I’m with you.

Ej: I think–I think we both want to shut out the outside world. But there’s also this real pull here that has nothing to do with running away. I want to be with you– get to know the real you.

Belle: [Chuckles] Well, when you find out, will you let me know?

[Both laugh]

Ej: It’s true. You come across as confident and straightforward. But you’re actually quite complicated. Like now, for example. You’re here with me, but something else is going on– something you’re not telling me.

Belle: [Sighs]

Ej: See? I am getting to know you.

[Both chuckle] So why don’t you tell me what it is? Trust me. Tell me how you feel right now.

Belle: Happy… and also very, very guilty.

Jan: What the hell are you doing here? No one asked you to come.

Brady: Shawn, do you mind if we talk privately? I think it’s important.

Chloe: Don’t worry about jan. I’ll stay here and keep her company.

Shawn: I’ll check back with you before I leave, okay?

Chloe: [Clears throat]

Jan: I don’t need company, okay? I need peace and calm. One’s emotional state is very important when one is breastfeeding.

Chloe: Mm, and one can drop the madonna act. You know that I know exactly what you’re doing.

Evan: You’re saying I got jan spears pregnant? We only slept together once.

Orpheus: Did you sleep through health class too? Once is all it takes.

Evan: Wait a minute. Even if I did get her pregnant, how the hell would you know?

Orpheus: Because I met ms. Spears myself not long after your little tryst.

[Suspenseful music]

Orpheus: Oh, didn’t know anybody was in here.

Jan: You can go ahead. I’m just waiting for some test results.

Orpheus: Oh?

Jan: I might be pregnant.

Orpheus: Is that right?

Jan: Fingers crossed.

Orpheus: And if the results are positive, that’s good news?

Jan: It would be like a dream come true.

Orpheus: Well, who’s the lucky father?

Evan: She told you it was me?

Orpheus: No. No, she said the father was detective shawn brady. Once upon a time, before jill said yes.

Ej: I knew it.

Belle: No, no, it is not that I didn’t want this to happen. It’s–this is probably gonna amuse you to no end, but I made vows and I promised shawn that I would never break them again, and I have.

Ej: Mm, and what about him? He slept with jan spears, knocked her up and moved her into your house and became her full-time caretaker. He vowed to stand by you through better or worse, or was there some special exemption in his vows?

Evan: She said shawn was the father?

Orpheus: Yeah, but it wouldn’t be the first time in that whack-job’s life that she lied. You got knocked up by a cop?

Jan: Not just any cop– detective shawn brady.

Orpheus: It’s too easy.

Jan: The love of my life.

Orpheus: Uh, lucky guy.

Jan: Was that supposed to be funny?

Orpheus: Realistic. I mean, it’s not like the two of you are gonna run off to some ivy-covered cottage and await your little bundle of joy.

Jan: You know what? You’re a jerk.

Orpheus: And you’re a stupid woman with a big mouth.

Jan: Why don’t you get the hell out of here? I don’t have to take any crap off of you.

Orpheus: Actually, you do. You have any idea who I am?

Jan: Some loser washing the floor.

Orpheus: My name is orpheus.

Jan: Oh.

Orpheus: Oh. You’ve heard of me?

Jan: Yeah, I’ve heard of you, and I don’t care that I told you. I want the whole world to know that I’m carrying shawn’s baby.

Orpheus: I know you do. I also know it’s not true. The truth is, you’re trying to pass off another man’s child as his.

Jan: You can’t know that.

Orpheus: I know everything that goes on within the prison walls, just like I know what’s going on in that twisted little mind of yours.

Jan: So you’re gonna rat me out?

Orpheus: No. I’m gonna help you.

Evan: So you’re planning on helping her pass off my kid as shawn brady’s?

Orpheus: Mm, not planning to. Mission accomplished.

Chloe: You know, I’ve never really had a high opinion of you, jan. But using your own child to get your hooks into shawn? That’s a new low.

Jan: Well, even though your opinion means nothing to me, you’re wrong. Having a baby has changed me and shawn. He senses that change, and look, I’m sorry, but I gave him a son, and every man, no matter what they say, wants a son. It’s not my fault belle wasn’t up to the task.

Chad: I haven’t been in that room since…

[Sniffles] I had to go in there with rafe, so–

[Sobbing] And, um…

Jack: Chad, chad. You don’t have to talk about it.

Jennifer: And you don’t have to deal with the dress either. Jack and I will take care of that.

Chad: Thank you.

[Somber music]

Jj: No.

Jack: Me neither.

Jj: [Sniffles]

Jennifer: Come on, come on. Have you–have you–have you had anything to eat?

Chad: No.

Jennifer: Oh, come now. Listen, listen to me. You have to take care of yourself, okay? You promise me you’re gonna take care of yourself. Okay, okay, good.

[Sniffles] Jack, let’s get this over with. Oh, jj, you make sure he eats something, okay?

Jj: Mm-hmm.

Jennifer: Okay? Okay. All right, let’s go.

Jack: [Sighs]

Chad: Ugh, they’re taking care of me. That’s not right.

Jj: No, it is right. They take care of you so you can take care of your kids. We all do whatever the hell we can to get through this.

Chad: All this pain–that look on your mom’s face, just– who would do this to us? No, you know? Who would do this? I assumed dust always stayed put.

Chad: It shouldn’t be like this, you know? I–I–I just keep–you know, I just keep thinking about the fact that the person who did this is walking around out there, you know, knowing that they got away with it.

Jj: So far–but just so far. We’re gonna find out who did it, and they will pay.

Chad: No, rafe’s been straight from the start. You know, there’s not much to go on. There’s some stuff that was stolen, but that could just be to make it look like a burglary. If that’s true, then whoever did this… then they wanted to kill her. You know, they set out to kill her.

Jj: Gwen?

Chad: No, gwen was at statesville, it couldn’t have been her.

[Sighs] You know, this was– I thought that…

[Sighs] I thought that it was over. I thought that we had gotten through all of this crap. It was supposed to be over. I told you she was happy. Okay? You know, we were happy. I…we were finally happy.

Jennifer: And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Now I understand why chad couldn’t come back into this room. Jack, I don’t know if I can do this.

Evan: Stop playing games. Just tell me what’s going on.

Orpheus: I already did. I gave my word to ms. Spears that I’d help her pass off your baby as detective brady’s, and that’s what I did. I heard the good news. You’re enceinte.

Jan: Huh?

Orpheus: Pregnant.

Jan: You bet I am, and once I start showing, I’m gonna call shawn’s insipid wife over for a little visit.

[Chuckles] She’s gonna have a total cow.

Orpheus: And you’re gonna have a total baby, just not shawn brady’S.

Jan: You said you weren’t gonna rat me out.

Orpheus: I’m not, I’m not. Don’t you think your detective’s gonna ask for a paternity test?

Jan: I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Orpheus: You’re gonna get to it sooner than you think, and you’re gonna need me to get you to the other side.

Jan: You know, I can’t help wondering what’s in it for you?

Evan: Good question– what’s in it for you?

Orpheus: Oh, you know me, I’m just a romantic at heart.

Evan: So you switched the tests for her?

Orpheus: You’re beginning to catch on.

Evan: And now shawn thinks jan’s going to give birth to his baby.

Orpheus: Mm. Did I not mention it? She already has.

Chloe: That is a stupid, offensive thing to say, even for you.

Jan: It’s the truth. Shawn and I, we have a son together. That’s an unbreakable bond. God has made us a family.

Chloe: Ha ha, god? God has nothing to do with it. Besides, you sold your soul to the devil. How does that even happen? I mean, you never had a soul to begin with.

Jan: I think you should leave and not come back.

Chloe: Aw, and I thought we were bonding.

Jan: And I’m going to tell shawn all of the horrible things that you’ve said to me. It’s not good for me to be upset. It’s not good for the baby.

Chloe: Listen, you can literally milk this situation for all it’s worth, but you know that deep down, this isn’t gonna turn out any differently than all the other stunts you’ve pulled over the years. Also deep down, you know that shawn will never stop loving belle.

Jan: But he might stop forgiving her. See, shawn knows that I’ll always be faithful. He’ll never have to forgive me for an indiscretion. But that’s always been an issue for our belle, hasn’t it? Philip, her little dalliance in maine? You know, I get so worried about belle. She gets so restless when shawn’s busy elsewhere. I hope that she’s found someone–I mean something– to occupy all those empty hours while shawn’s here with me at the hospital.

Belle: After the baby was born, I went to ej’S.

Chloe: Really?

Belle: Mm.

Chloe: You stayed there?

Belle: Mm-hmm, yeah.

Chloe: And?

Belle: And it was very comforting.

Chloe: Oh, my god, you slept together? No, I’m sorry. It’s none of my business.

Belle: No, its fine, it’s fine. But no, we actually didn’t, but we came close.

Jan: Maybe she could knit something for the baby.

Belle: Shawn was tricked into sleeping with jan. That’s not an adultery. This, this is.

Ej: No, it’s not. You and shawn are legally separated.

Belle: I’m not talking about a legal technicality. I’m talking about what marriage means–what commitment means–

Ej: Damn it, belle. What marriage? What commitment? He caved to that woman and basically told you that she’s calling the shots, and you had nothing to say about it. Again, what marriage? That is abandonment. You weren’t even living together, and he signed those separation papers willingly. You didn’t have a gun to his head.

[Sighs]

Belle: He said that I filed those papers so that I could sleep with you.

Ej: [Laughs]

Belle: Maybe he was right.

Ej: Oh. Announcer: Type 2 diabetes?

Evan: She already had the baby?

Orpheus: That’s how I knew he was a boy.

Evan: Wait a minute. It’s too early.

Orpheus: He was premature.

Evan: Is he okay? You gotta get me back into the infirmary–I gotta see him.

Orpheus: They’re not there. They’re at university hospital.

Evan: She’s out?

Orpheus: That’s the whole point. I need her on the outside.

Evan: What are you up to?

Shawn: So if you’re trying to save our marriage, you should be talking to belle and not me. All right, the fact is, she has shut me out at every single corner. I mean, the fact that I thought I was making love to my wife, that meant nothing to her. The fact that–brady, I basically did nothing wrong. That meant nothing to her. So–look, if you’re trying to help us, you should not be talking to me. You should be talking to your sister.

Chloe: Um, that went well, did it?

Brady: [Sighs] He’s right.

Chloe: About what?

Brady: I need to talk to belle now.

Ej: You know, you and i had a very honest talk about our motives. We were both upfront that there was an element of sticking it to shawn and sami. But that was just an element. I’ve wanted you, belle, for a very long time, and I know you feel the same.

Belle: I do.

Ej: Then let’s stop talking about guilt, which is basically talking about them. I want this night to just be about us. I want to spend the night with you by my side, and I want your fabulous face to be the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning.

Chad: Now I know what magical thinking means. I keep going back in my mind, trying to rewind the tape, so that we left the night before to go to boston just like she wanted to before I talked her out of it.

Jj: Come on, chad, there’s no way you could’ve known what would happen.

Chad: Yeah, but I can still see it… your dad’s party, the kids running around like maniacs.

[Laughs] Me freaking out, and abby just laughin’… telling me that there’s nothing to worry about. I get to hear her laughing, jj. I can see her.

[Chuckles] That smile…

[Somber music]

Jack: Why don’t you go downstairs, and I’ll pick something out, and I’ll be right down?

Jennifer: No. No, I couldn’t do that to you. We’ll do this together. Fishing helps ease my mind.

[Somber music]

Jennifer: I was with her when she bought this dress on newberry street. She was staying with me because she and chad were separated.

[Chuckles] She wanted to go to lunch, go shopping, anything but mope around the house. She made me promise not to say chad’s name.

[Sniffles] Oh, when she saw this dress, she said, “chad would love me in this.” And that’s when I knew.

[Sniffles] She was ready to forgive him, and they were gonna find their way back to each other. She told me I was making much too much about a dress, but when we got back to the house, chad was there waiting for her.

[Sniffles] They went back to salem the next day.

Jack: Then that’s it. That’s the dress, and I think when chad is ready to hear it, you should tell him that story.

Jennifer: [Sighs]

Orpheus: I made a deal with ms. Spears. I help her dupe her detective, she helps me with a little favor.

Evan: What’d you tell her? How did you convince her you were willing to screw over your own son to help her?

Orpheus: Tell her? I didn’t have to tell her anything. She has no idea we’re father and son, just like shawn brady has no idea he’s not that baby’s father.

Jan: Chloe was awful to me. She said the most horrible things.

Shawn: I’m sorry–

Jan: No, you need to tell brady to keep her away from me.

Shawn: Okay, fine. I will tell brady to have her back off. But you need to listen to me, okay? You have to hear what I have to say.

Jan: You’re mad at me?

Shawn: No, jan. I’m frustrated. You should not have kissed me. You cannot turn this into something that it isn’T.

Jan: Shawn, I’m not trying to. When I kissed you, I found out something very important– that it’s not just my imagination– that you felt something for me too. I know that now.

Jj: I– [Sniffles] I gotta say I feel a little weird being here.

Chad: Why?

Jj: I don’t know, maybe– maybe you want your brothers or something. I know that I wasn’t always a–

Chad: My biggest fan?

[Chuckles] You never thought that I was good enough for her.

Jj: I’m sorry.

Chad: You were probably right.

Jj: No, no, I wasn’T.

Chad: You know, the thing is, is– see, my brothers, they would probably just try to say the right thing. You knew her better than anyone. You loved her. They can’t understand how much I lost. You do.

Jj: [Sniffles]

[Sobbing] Look, I want you to know that I changed my mind. After a while, seeing you two together, I thought maybe he is good enough for her. Anybody who’s good enough for abigail is pretty damn good in my book. My parents only had one son. But I have a brother.

Chad: [Sobs]

[Groans]

[Somber music]

Jack: Well. We did it.

Jennifer: Thanks to you. Now we just have to get through the funeral.

Jack: We’ll do that the same way we just did this– together.

Jennifer: Yes, we will.

Belle: I can’t stay here.

Ej: Why not?

Belle: I’m just not ready, you know, for spending the night and waking up with you.

Ej: Okay.

Belle: Yet.

Ej: And I will hold onto that “yet.”

[Pensive music]

Belle: [Clears throat] I meant what I said. It was wonderful.

Ej: Good night, belle.

Belle: Good night, ej.

Chloe: I don’t think that you should go over there right now.

Brady: No, I need to talk to belle now to see if what shawn is telling me is true.

Chloe: No, don’t go–at least not tonight. Why don’t you wait until the morning or so?

Brady: Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that–

Chloe: I am not telling you anything.

Brady: Oh.

Chloe: Except you should not go over there tonight.

Brady: Son of a bitch.

Jan: You can deny it all you want, but I know you felt the exact same way I did when we kissed.

Shawn: Jan, I will not listen to this. You know what? I won’T.

Jan: We’re gonna be a family, shawn. You’re gonna come around. I just know it.

Evan: You knew I had sex with jan spears and didn’t tell me? You knew she got pregnant and didn’t tell me? You switched the paternity tests and you won’t tell me what you’re getting in return?

Orpheus: I know it may seem like I don’t trust you–

[Chuckles] Out of solitary so soon? How are you doing, son?

Evan: Fantastic. Nothing like a little me time in a deep, dark hole. Just rest, relaxation, and oblivion.

Orpheus: Well, your little vanishing act left the warden quite red-faced– mm, bad press and such– so I guess he figured a slap on the wrist just wouldn’t do the trick.

Evan: Yeah, I guess not.

Orpheus: Well, at least tell me you got the most out of your little vacay outside.

Evan: Well, I did get to catch up with some old friends.

Ciara: It was so great catching up with you too, mom. All right. Love you too. Bye. Whew!

Ben: Wow.

Ciara: Wow, what?

Ben: I may need to get guinness on the phone because that has got to be some kind of a record.

Ciara: Oh, really?

Ben: Really; you were on the phone for hours, babe, possibly days.

Ciara: Wow, does my little hubby wubby need some attention?

Ben: Maybe, but it’s okay because bo needed help packing for college anyway, so…

Ciara: Mm, wow. Okay, so first it was hours, then days. Now, it’s years?

Ben: Seemed like it, but it’s okay. I’m glad you two had a chance to catch up. What’d you talk about?

Ciara: Well, mostly we talked about what a big goofball my husband is. And then, we also talked about how jan just gave birth to shawn’s baby.

Jan: Oh, my god. Mmm, this is amazing! Mmm. You know what they say with chili burgers– the messier the better.

Shawn: Yeah, well, then that must be the best chili burger ever.

Jan: Oh. Thanks again, shawn, for saving me from another night of hospital gruel.

Shawn: Mm-hmm.

Jan: Shawn, what’s wrong? You’ve been totally emo ever since you got back with the food.

Shawn: [Sighs] Look, I– look, I ran into belle earlier.

Jan: Oh. I’m guessing it didn’t go well.

Shawn: Well, I didn’t think it was possible, but yeah, she’s more upset with me now than ever.

Ej: I was hoping you and I could pick up where we left off before we were so rudely interrupted.

Belle: You can’t be serious.

Ej: Why not?

Belle: Because we were about to go to your bedroom.

Ej: [Chuckles] I’m well aware of that.

Belle: No, we can’t, ej, not after what just happened with sami.

Lucas: Mmm, I’m so glad. I’m so glad you said yes.

Sami: Did you have any doubts?

Lucas: A little bit. You know, I think I was traumatized from what happened in the past– you know, all those times I proposed. And it took you a while to say yes– I was thinking about investing in a kneepad company– but then, I went for that one, final gesture.

Sami: I don’t even remember which time you’re talking about.

Lucas: What, you don’t remember when I sang to you “when a man loves a woman”?

Sami: Oh, of course, at…

Both: The penthouse grill.

Luke: And that lady booed me.

Sami: She did not. That’s not true. Nobody booed you. Everyone saw how sweet you were. They all clapped.

Lucas: Yeah, because I stopped.

Sami: Doesn’t matter. This is the most perfect time. We’re together again. Lucas, I love my engagement ring.

Lucas: You do? You like it?

Sami: Yes, and it’s the best one you’ve ever given me.

Lucas: Good, ’cause it’s the most expensive. We’ve just been down this road so many times.

Sami: It doesn’t matter. We’re doing it right this time ’cause, you know what, I’m not keeping any secrets from you, so it’s really gonna work out.

Lucas: Yeah, it is. This time, it’s gonna be forever.

Sami: Yay.

[Soft orchestration]

Ben: So how does mom feel about jan spears joining the family? Sort of.

Ciara: Uh, well, obviously she’s not so thrilled about the jan part, but she is excited to meet her new grandson, shawn christian, and to meet our little, sweet baby angel, of course.

Ben: Hmm.

Ciara: How is our son anyway? Has he graduated from harvard yet?

Ben: Yes, two degrees. And it only took him half of your phone call to finally fall sleep, so I think we’re in the clear at least for a couple hours… unless you got any other phone calls to make.

Ciara: Well, actually, I was thinking that we have some making up of our own to do.

[Knocks on door]

Ben: Mm. Remember all those years ago, we were just a young, married couple with all the time in the world to ourselves?

Ciara: Hmm.

Ben: Really miss those days.

Ciara: Hmm.

[Sighs]

Allie: Hi.

Ciara: Hi.

Allie: I know I should have called first, but I just was scared I would chicken out if I didn’t come over and do this right now.

Ciara: Um, do what?

Allie: Apologize for kidnapping your baby. Ciara, do you think that there’s any way you could ever forgive me?

Ej: I know neither of us were expecting samantha to show up on my doorstep today, but I don’t see how that changes anything.

Belle: Of course it does! Come on, ej, you know as well as I do that things were different when she was out of town. She was out of sight, out of mind.

Ej: She’s out of sight now, and she’s certainly out of my mind.

Belle: You keep saying that, but I think jumping into bed with me after ending your marriage just– it seems like a bad idea.

Ej: Oh, on the contrary, I think it’s a great idea. What better way to celebrate my freedom?

Belle: Grandmother, what big teeth you have.

Ej: Oh, so I’m the big bad wolf, am I?

Belle: No. But, ej, if we went upstairs right now, it wouldn’t be about us. It would be about you sticking it to my sister, and I’m not gonna be used like that.

Orpheus: So ben and ciara got the best of you once again, huh?

Evan: I’ll admit, I probably should have given my battle plan a little more thought.

Orpheus: Well, you know who could have helped you with that? Dear ol’ dad. Next time you get it in your head to bust out of this place, maybe you won’t leave your old man out of the loop.

Evan: It was more of a spur of the moment kind of thing. Marlena’s granddaughter showed up out of the blue and snapped her fingers and made the whole thing happen, like, literally. She snapped her fingers and the whole place plunged into darkness. That should have been my first clue who allie really was. I made a deal with the devil.

Ciara: Allie, of course I forgive you. Are you kidding? None of what happened was your fault. You had no control over any of it.

Allie: I know, but I still feel responsible. And my family told me everything–like, everything that I did–and I wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to talk to me again.

Ciara: Allie, please don’t be ridiculous.

Ben: Ciara is right. We don’t blame you at all. Please, come on in.

Ciara: Yeah.

Allie: Well, thank you, guys. I can’t tell you how many times I had to talk myself into coming over and doing this. Like, I was really scared you were just gonna slam the door on my face.

Ciara: Oh, my god, allie, we would never do that. I love you; you know that.

Allie: I know. I love you too. And I’m really relieved. I’m happy. Oh, and I almost forgot. I bought this. It is for bo.

Ciara: Baby, that is so sweet. Thank you. Bo’s actually inside taking a nap right now.

Allie: God, you’re like a superhero, like a super-mom. One second, you’re putting your kid down for a nap, and then the next, you’re saving his soul from the dark lord.

Ciara: Mm. Yeah, well, all in a day’s work, I guess.

Allie: I mean, it’s just incredible. Like, how did you defeat the devil?

Ciara: Well, actually, I had a little bit of help from my dad.

Allie: Mm.

Sami: [Groans] I can’t believe that belle was there at the mansion. She basically said straight out to me that she doesn’t believe he’s guilty.

Lucas: Well, she’s his lawyer. What else is she gonna say about that? You know, she’s not gonna say that…

Sami: But don’t you think that’s crazy? She’s my sister and she was defending the man who kidnapped me, letting him go free. I think that’s pretty screwed up.

Lucas: Well, you know, your relationship with your sister has kind of been screwed up from the very beginning– you know, ever since she was a baby and when you tried to sell her on the black market.

Sami: Are you seriously throwing that in my face right now? Are you kidding me? How come people can’t just move on from that? That was a long time ago. I was a kid. And they got her back. They did get her back. Ugh, and now she uses that as an excuse to blame me for everything wrong that ever happens in her life.

Lucas: And you set jan spears loose.

Sami: Okay, well, that was extreme, but come on, I needed to do it. I had to get custody of our grandson. I was desperate.

Lucas: Yeah, so desperate that you had no concern how this was gonna affect your sister at all. So you brought jan back into belle’s life, and then what happened? Her husband, he fathers a son with what? With her worst nightmare? So I don’t think that’s gonna work. I mean, yeah, she’s gonna hate you for messing up her marriage. I think she has a right to be pretty ticked off.

Ej: Belle, I assure you, if we go upstairs now, make love, it won’t be because I want to hurt sami. It’d be because I want to do the opposite to you.

Belle: I want to believe that, very much so, but it’s really tough when I know that you’re pretending that you don’t care your marriage just ended.

Ej: [Chuckles haughtily] Who’s pretending?

Belle: You are, and you’re very good at it, but, ej, you loved sami.

Ej: Loved. Loved; past tense. I’ve moved on with you, or so I thought.

Belle: [Chuckles weakly] I just–I don’t know if I can trust your motives.

Ej: [Sighs] You’re being ridiculous.

Belle: My father told me that you were using me to get back at sami. At the time, I totally blew up at him and told him he was completely off-base, but maybe he was right.

Ej: Hmm, or maybe you’re projecting. Maybe you think I’m using you because, this whole time, you’ve been using me to get back at shawn.

Jan: I don’t mean to pry, but what happened?

Shawn: I don’t want to talk about it, jan.

Jan: Of course you do. It doesn’t seem fair that you have no one to confide in. Meanwhile, you know belle is spilling her guts to ej dimera. I promise I won’t offer my opinion or anything. I’ll zip it right up. Only listening from now on.

Shawn: Look. I mean, at first, things were– they were going well. I mean, we both admitted that there was–there was still hope for the two of us.

Jan: Really?

Shawn: But then, I told her that the warden had extended your house arrest and that I was the one that advocated for it, and that’s when things took a turn for the worse. And she was just– she was fed up, and…

Julie: And can you blame her? This is the sound of nature breathing.

Orpheus: So allie horton really was possessed by the devil?

Evan: Yeah. Glowing eyes, creepy voice. And I totally blew it. I never should have let satan put me under his spell. One look at him, and I should have turned and ran, but I let hate get the better of me.

Orpheus: Hmm, well, I suppose that was the devil’s plan all along.

Evan: The second I saw that innocent, little baby, I should have been stronger, but instead, all I could see was revenge. All I could see was hurting ben and ciara in the worst way possible. It was a test, and I failed. If I was a better man, I’d be with my son right now, but no, I had the opportunity to get to david, and I wasted it.

Allie: So uncle bo just kind of appeared to you?

Ciara: Yeah. Well, I sort of felt his presence at the cemetery, and then ben and I actually spoke to him at the hospital.

Allie: Wow, that’s amazing. I would almost say I don’t believe it, but after I’ve been through, I know literally anything is possible.

Ciara: Yeah. Yeah, I’ve–I just– I miss my dad so much. There’s literally not one day that goes by where I don’t long to see him or talk to him one last time. And all of a sudden, there he was in the hospital, waiting to meet my little bo.

Allie: That’s amazing, and I’m so happy for you, ciara.

Ciara: Thank you. Um, speaking of dads, how is yours doing?

Allie: Oh, I don’t know. I’m actually going to go see him after this. The first time since abigail died.

Ciara: It is so awful, what happened to her.

Allie: Yeah, it’s the worst, I mean, especially for chad and the kids, and my aunt jennifer and uncle jack, and my dad. I don’t–like, I don’t know what I’m gonna say to him.

Ciara: Well, I’m sure something will come to you when you see him, you know?

Allie: Yeah.

Ciara: And even just you, like, being there to comfort him will mean the world to him. Please give him our best, will you?

Allie: Yeah. Yeah, I will.

Ciara: Yeah.

Sami: Wait a second. Shawn-douglas’ behavior is not my fault. He cheats on his wife, and all of a sudden–

Lucas: Settle down; let’s not focus on belle and shawn. Let’s focus on us and our future and our happiness together, and exes be damned.

Sami: That sounds good to me. In fact, don’t you think we should go share our happy story with our family?

Lucas: I think that’s a great idea. I think we make a great team.

[Laughter]

Shawn: Hey, grandma. I didn’t hear you come in.

Julie: I know. You were too busy sharing your feelings about your wife with this prison pinup.

Jan: [Scoffs] Excuse me, granny williams, but I am the mother of shawn’s baby. I’m family.

Julie: No. No, you’re not family. You are a conniving, little snake who tricked my grandson into getting you pregnant. Now, the baby is born. It’s time for you to slither back to where you belong– behind bars.

Jan: I can’t believe you would be so coldhearted about your own great-grandson. Don’t you want shawn christian to be raised by his mother?

Julie: Not when his mother is a murderer.

Jan: Oh, please, I did the whole town a favor by getting rid of charlie dale. And may I remind you that I did it to protect claire. I’m basically a hero. You should be thanking me.

Julie: [Scoffs] You’re not a hero. Heroes don’t have ulterior motives, schemes, plots. You just wanted belle out of the way so you could frame her for murder.

Jan: Well, aren’t you a negative nelly.

Belle: Don’t you dare try and turn this around on me.

Ej: You questioned my motives. It’s only fair that we examine yours. Why is it that every time you had a fight with shawn, you came running over here?

Belle: Because I needed someone to talk to!

Ej: You could have turned to chloe or brady or just about anyone else, but instead, you came here. You specifically sought me out, and you knew it would get back to your husband.

Belle: Okay, yes, I knew it would bother shawn, but that’s not why I confided in you.

Ej: It was more than confiding, belle. You directly involved me in your separation.

Belle: You’re a lawyer.

Ej: You stayed the night here; you could have stayed at the inn. And we’ve kissed. We’ve kissed more than once. Now, was all of this because of shawn, or do you have real feelings for me?

Belle: I wouldn’t have asked you to go upstairs if I didn’T.

Ej: Except now, you’re pulling away, so I can’t help but wonder if, this whole time, you were playing this game that suddenly got out of hand.

Belle: Okay, you know what, just because you’re articulate doesn’t mean you’re not also petty as hell for calling a conflicted woman a tease.

Ej: Well, you have been throwing yourself at me.

Belle: [Scoffs]

Ej: And then, you go–

Belle: Oh, my god! You are unbelievable. You know what, we should just end this conversation before you make more of an ass of yourself than you already have.

Ej: Belle, don’T. Please don’t go.

Julie: Shawn, why are you helping this person stay out of prison?

Shawn: She’s the mother of my son. I’m doing it for him.

Julie: I’m sure that’s what you think, but this little viper is just using you.

Julie: I wish I believed it. Okay, okay. Talk about it another time. Actually, I just came here to congratulate you, to see the new baby, which I have in the nursery. He’s beautiful.

Jan: Thank you. And he looks a lot like me, right? At least the big, soulful eyes anyway.

Julie: Time for me to go before I do something I won’t regret.

Jan: Aw, I’m so sorry to see you go so soon.

Julie: Yes, I’m sure you are. Anyway, I’m on my way to see ciara because I’m going to give her, from your mother, the most wonderful gift. I’m more than excited about it.

Shawn: Yeah? What is it?

Julie: Oh, darling, you’ll never guess.

Ciara: Aw. Look at how adorable.

Ben: Oh, my god. Come on. Oh, are you kidding me? Check this out. You know how much fun little bo and I are gonna have sailing the treacherous bubble-bath seas in this?

Ciara: Well, I’m glad you like it because I actually have a little surprise for you.

Ben: I love surprises.

Ciara: Okay, easy. It’s not that kind of a surprise, sailor. It’s from my mom. When I spoke to her earlier, she said that she had a very special gift for us.

Ben: Oh, yeah? What is it? Some more bath toys?

Ciara: No. Actually, you and i are now proud owners of a boat, a real one.

Allie: Mom!

Sami: Hi, allie. We were just coming to see you.

Allie: Thank god, and I was just coming to see dad. When did you get back in town?

Sami: You look beautiful. I just got back today, but I’m sorry I couldn’t be here sooner.

Allie: No, no worries. I mean, you had good reason. I heard you gave the doctors hell for not letting you fly.

Sami: Yeah, I did because I was worried about you and johnny. I wanted to be here. I wanted to see for myself that you both are okay.

Allie: Well, I’m fine. I’m totally fine, although, for some reason, I can’t stop listening to “sympathy for the devil” by the rolling stones.

Sami: Oh, you’re making jokes now.

Allie: Yeah.

Sami: Hilarious.

Allie: Sorry. Listen, johnny and I are really into possession jokes now. It’s become, like, a coping mechanism.

Sami: Yeah, got it. Okay, well, I guess I shouldn’t have worried.

[Laughter]

Lucas: Now that you guys are properly reunited, shouldn’t we tell her the news?

Allie: Oh, god. Who’s possessed now?

Lucas: Allie, come on.

Allie: Sorry. Okay, too soon? Too soon? All right, okay. So what’s the news?

Sami: Your dad proposed to me and I said yes.

Allie: Oh, my god! Oh, my god! Mom, dad, congrats!

Lucas: Bring it in.

Allie: Mom, I’m so happy for you.

Belle: I don’t think there’s anything left to say.

Ej: Well, it has crossed my mind that being with you would upset samantha, and I can’t say I don’t find a certain satisfaction with that.

Belle: And there you have it.

Ej: Belle, there’s more to our attraction than just our desire for revenge. You and I do have a real connection.

Evan: I hate that I’ve missed so much of my son’s life. I wish I would have just turned my back on this town, headed straight to him– just picked him up from zoey’s and gone on the run, just me and him.

Orpheus: Yeah, that wouldn’t have worked. Your sister wouldn’t have approved, for one thing, and you and the boy would have struggled on the run.

Evan: Yeah, I guess you’re right.

Orpheus: And there’s something else, something you don’t know.

Evan: What?

Orpheus: I’m sorry. I’m sorry, son, but zoey got back together with her ex-husband, and they moved to new zealand with their son and yours. David’s on the other side of the world.

Ben: Your mom is giving us a boat?

Ciara: Mm-hmm.

Ben: That’s a little extravagant, no?

Ciara: Yeah, well, boats are sort of a thing in my family. And I think she kind of feels guilty about being away for so long.

Ben: What do you mean “boats are kind of a thing”?

Ciara: Well, my dad had one for a really long time, and he actually named it after my mom.

Ben: Ah, hope the boat?

Ciara: Mm, no. The fancy face. Yeah, that was his nickname for her. He bought it right after they had my brother, shawn, and then they spent years traveling the seas.

Ben: Mm, sounds kind of amazing.

Ciara: Yeah, it was. They would tell me all about their boating adventures. And then, my brother got inspired to do the same thing when claire was a kid. Yeah, he lived on the fancy face iv for a really long time.

Ben: What? The iv?

Ciara: Mm-hmm.

Ben: What the hell happened to fancy face I, ii, and iii?

Ciara: It’s a long story, but the point is, now you and i have our very own boat, babe. We can travel wherever and whenever we want and make some amazing memories on our own.

Shawn: That is awesome. Ben and ciara, they’re gonna love having a boat.

Jan: Uh, hello, shawn and i also just had a baby. Where’s our boat?

Julie: The titanic would be appropriate.

Shawn: I–

[Sighs] I remember how excited belle and I were to travel around the world, you know, on the fancy face iv with claire. Those were some of the best times of our lives. God, it feels like it was just yesterday.

Julie: Darling, don’t worry. You and belle are gonna have lots of wonderful adventures. You’ll see. I know things might seem a little thorny at the moment, but don’t worry. There’s no power in the world that’s gonna stop the two of you from being together.

Ej: Belle, you and i have something special. These past few months, getting to know you, growing closer, it’s meant a lot to me, and I want that to continue.

Belle: It’s just–the problem is just–it’s so mixed up. It’s so complicated. How much of this is about sticking it to our exes and how much of it is actually about us?

Ej: Well, think of it this way– if I cared more about hurting sami, wouldn’t I have told her that you and I had kissed? When she said that she was getting married to lucas, wouldn’t I have thrown it in her face that you and I were about to go upstairs together? But I didn’t do those things because, when it comes down to it, this has nothing to do with samantha. It’s none of her damn business. It’s ours because this is about you and me. Sami: Can’t decide how I feel about your mom’s reaction to our news.

Lucas: What do you mean?

Sami: Well, she was a little subdued, don’t you think? I mean, I thought we had gotten past our…

Lucas: Well, you know, I think that she kind of knew I was gonna propose anyway, so she wasn’t that shocked. I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Lucas: Plus, I have enough enthusiasm to go around anyway.

Marlena: Chad… I just spoke to belle.

[Sighs] She said that you had told the children about abigail.

[Knocking at door]

Rafe: Yeah?

Nicole: Hi.

Rafe: Hey.

Nicole: Sorry to interrupt.

Rafe: No.

Nicole: I was just wondering if you had any luck on abigail’s case, and to bring you some sustenance, of course.

Rafe: Thank you. I could definitely use it. And no, I’m just poring over these photos again and again, just…wanna see if I’ve missed anything. But, uh, so far, no. Haven’t been able to zero in on a suspect.

Sami: He has to know there’s no way I’d stay married to a man who lied to me about kidnapping me.

[Knocking at door]

Kate: Well, what the hell happened here?

Ej: So shall we?

Belle: I thought you’d never ask.

[Doorbell rings] Ignore it.

Ej: It could be the police. Maybe they made some progress with the investigation.

Kate: This looks like a room in high school.

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, not quite.

Kate: I assume you were looking for something.

Lucas: Yeah, I, um, I heard that abigail’s killer may have taken some jewelry from her room.

Kate: Thank god. And you just thought that maybe that it was in here?

Lucas: I hoped not. But I couldn’t find it anywhere. So now I’m thinking–I’m hoping that maybe I didn’t do it.

Kate: Oh, god, lucas. I really wish we could base that on a lot more than just an absence of jewelry.

[Sighs] You can’t remember anything about that night?

Lucas: No, unfortunately, I can’T. But the rumor is, whoever killed abigail took the jewelry.

Kate: Okay, which you don’t have.

Lucas: Right, right. So that’s what I’m thinking, you know? If it wasn’t me, gotta be somebody else.

Kate: Okay. Well, let’s hope.

Lucas: I’m gonna do more than hope. I have to stay positive through this. It’s the only way I can stay sane. Yeah, look at this. Speaking of positive, look. Ow, ow!

Kate: Oh, my god. Is that what I think it is?

Lucas: Yeah. I’m finally gonna propose to sami.

Sami: I need to talk to you.

Ej: Samantha…

Sami: Belle, what are you doing here?

Ej: Your sister is my attorney. We were just discussing some legal matters.

Sami: Oh, fantastic. What trouble have you gotten yourself into this time?

Belle: Ej hasn’t done anything, sami.

Sami: Really? Are you kidding me right now? Of course he has. Nobody just has their lawyer hanging around for no good reason. As much as I hate to admit it, I am still his wife. So I have a right to know what mess you’ve gotten yourself mixed up in this time.

Belle: He hasn’t, sami. Um, the truth is, I am staying here. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Kate: So sami’s back in town?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, she got back a little while ago.

Kate: Where is she right now?

Lucas: She went to go see ej to get him to sign the divorce papers.

Kate: And you were okay with that?

Lucas: No, I wasn’T. Of course not.

Kate: Well, then why didn’t you stop her?

Lucas: I tried to stop her. I told her to let the lawyers handle it. But she wouldn’t listen to me. She was adamant–she wanted ej to sign the papers today. I mean, I’m not happy at the fact that they’re both alone together right now. But you know what? It’s okay. It’s okay if it means that she’s finally through with that bastard once and for all. I’m good.

Kate: [Scoffs] Well, that’s assuming that he signs those divorce papers. Lucas, when has he ever, ever done anything of benefit to you? What if he decides, “no, instead of signing these, I’m gonna convince sami that I’m innocent of her kidnapping”? You’re not a little worried that he might point his finger at you?

Sami: So let me get this straight–you and shawn are separated, and jan spears had his baby? Kay, I understand why you don’t wanna stay with shawn, but why aren’t you staying with mom?

Belle: Oh, I was until mom decided to be jan’s therapist. So couldn’t really stay there anymore.

Sami: Of course she is. Got it. So there’s no room in any hotel in town? You had to bunk in with your client? That’s your only option?

Ej: Actually, belle’s more than just my attorney.

Roman: A lot on your mind, huh? Why do I get the feeling this has something to do with nicole? And look, if you’re hidin’ out up here because of what kate said, that’s just kate being kate. Look, I am sorry that she put you on the spot.

Eric: Yeah, I get the feeling she’s not.

Roman: Yeah, no. I’ll never understand why she just loves stirring up trouble. If it were an olympic sport, she would definitely take the gold.

Eric: Nice to hear she has a hobby.

Roman: Yeah. I just wish it were more like, you know, learning a second language or gardening. And though it is not a hobby of mine to stir up trouble, you are my son, so I do think I am justified in wanting to know–

Eric: What’s going on with nicole and me.

Roman: Care to share?

Nicole: It must be so hard working on this case while you’re still grieving abigail.

Rafe: It is, yeah. But also, whoever did this left two children without a mother. So I am more than motivated to get the son of a bitch and make him pay. And, uh, I’m not gonna be able to live with myself if I don’t get this maniac off the streets.

Nicole: And you will. I have every bit of faith in you.

Rafe: Thank you. Okay, enough about me.

[Chuckles] How was your day? Hopefully, less eventful than mine. What’s going on at basic black?

Nicole: Um, actually, I didn’t come from the office.

Rafe: No?

Nicole: No.

Rafe: Had a meeting?

Nicole: Well, uh, I was lucky. I went to abe’s impromptu wedding. I got to spend the day celebrating life and love.

Chad: Yeah, I read a few articles, um, about how to tell a child that a parent has died. Yeah, I tried to use some of that advice, but it all went out the window as soon as I sat down and I looked at their little faces.

Marlena: Of course it did. Look, I know a few things about you. Among those things are that you are a fabulous dad, and I’m sure you’d do the very best you could for them.

Chad: Yeah, I don’t know about that, I, uh– you know, I just–I just said all the, you know, the usual cliché things, like, “mom had to go to heaven,” and “even though, you know, she’s not gonna be here on earth anymore, she’ll always be in your heart.”

[Scoffs]

[Sighs]

Marlena: Chad… yes, it’s a cliché. But it’s also very true. I think you said the right thing.

Chad: I don’t know. I mean, thomas gets it. Charlotte, she just kept saying, “when’s mom coming back?” And I had to tell her, “mom isn’t coming back. She’s not coming back.” Now, I don’t know how the hell I’m supposed to expect her to understand it when I don’t understand it myself.

Nicole: Yeah, it was spur of the moment. Otherwise, I would’ve asked you to be my plus one.

Nicole: Yeah, so am I. But I have to say, I mean, the ceremony was fine, but the reception got cut short– I mean, lani confessing to having shot tr…

Rafe: Yeah, I just got the paperwork about lani confessing to killing tr. Didn’t realize she did it in the middle of the reception, though.

Nicole: Yeah, everything came to a screeching halt as you can imagine.

Rafe: Yeah, I’ll bet. And you probably didn’t get anything to eat, and from the size of that bag, you brought enough for two of us. So why don’t you join me?

Nicole: Um, actually, I did have lunch. I ended up at the pub.

Rafe: Oh, you did?

Nicole: Mm-hmm.

Rafe: By yourself?

Nicole: No, I–I ate with roman and kate and eric.

Rafe: Huh.

Eric: Great. You wanna talk about nicole too.

Roman: Look, I don’t want to pry. But you two obviously have a history together, and believe me, I know how much it hurt you when you found out nicole slept with xander. But now that some time has passed…

Eric: What? Go ahead, finish the sentence.

Roman: Well, I just wondered if maybe two of you might be able to work things out.

Eric: Work things out?

Roman: Mm-hmm.

Eric: You make it sound like it’s so easy. Nicole, she’s moved on. She’s with rafe now, and apparently very much in love. Not to mention, they’re actually engaged to get married.

Roman: They’re not married yet.

Lucas: Of course I’m worried about ej pointing the finger at me. But I would’ve needed a physical barrier in the doorway to stop sami from going over there.

Kate: What, are you kidding? You can’t stop a woman on crutches from leaving you? Because if that’s true, it doesn’t bode well for your future together, believe me.

Lucas: You know, she can use those crutches as weapons. But it’s not the point. The point is, even if I managed to stop hurricane sami from blowing over to ej, she would’ve–she would’ve realized that it would’ve made me look suspicious. Don’t you understand that? She would’ve wondered why I care what ej says. Well, all the more reason to think it’s true if that happens.

Kate: Okay, I see your point.

Lucas: You see, this way– this way she knows, sami knows that I’m not threatened by anything that ej says. But I’m just hoping that, you know, whatever he does say, she’s not gonna take much stock into it, because today, I’m gonna propose to her.

Kate: Okay, um, about that…

Lucas: What, what?

Kate: Do you really think this is the right time to push the wedding?

Sami: What exactly do you mean that she’s more than just your attorney?

Ej: We’ve become friends. Belle’s been a great support to me since she came to stay here– especially the night of abigail’s murder.

Sami: You were here when that happened?

Chad: Help! Somebody help!

Belle: What happened?

Ej: What the hell?

Belle: I was, yeah. We tried to do everything we could, and–so chad obviously didn’t want the kids in the house.

Sami: Oh, my god, of course not.

Ej: So we–belle and I–got them out of the house, and took them to marlena and john’S.

Belle: Yeah. Chad’s there with them now. He just told them that their mother died.

Ej: [Sighs]

Marlena: Chad, I’ve had a few patients over the years that have had to tell a child that a parent wasn’t coming home, and what I can tell you is, there is no right or wrong way to do that, and I would never presume to tell you how to tell your children. What I do know is that you are a kind, intuitive man… and you’re a wonderful father… and thank god they have you.

Chad: Thank god I have them.

Marlena: Would you like me to talk to them?

Chad: Yeah, if you wouldn’t mind.

Marlena: I wouldn’t mind. I’d be very glad to do whatever I can to help.

Chad: [Sniffles] I think, um–I think they’re in with john right now. Jack and jennifer brought over a little race car track, so they’re probably playing with that right about now.

Marlena: Oh–

John: Hey, sweetheart. I didn’t know you were home.

Marlena: Yeah. I hear there’s some racing going on in the other room.

John: Mm, yeah. Thomas and charlotte are on lap 500 of the dimera grand prix.

[Chuckles]

Marlena: Sounds like you’re ready for a pit stop.

John: Mm.

Marlena: Why don’t I, um– I’ll take a few rounds.

Chad: Thank you.

Marlena: Of course. Of course.

Sami: No matter how I may feel about the dearly departed, abby–my heart breaks for those kids. I know what it’s like to have to tell your kid that their parent isn’t coming home, and face a future raising your children alone, which is actually reminding me of why I’m here. I have divorce papers, ej, and I would like you to sign them.

Chad: No, thank you. I should probably stay present for the kids.

John: Yeah, I understand that. Chad… I know that it’s not always helpful to tell someone who’s suffering that they’ve been through a similar situation. I know that, um–I actually used to resent it when people did that to me. I don’t know, I just kind of felt like that maybe they were being dismissive of my pain, you know?

Chad: No, I would never think that about you, john, and I know that you went through something similar– losing your wife.

John: Isabella, yeah.

John: Did you know we had just gotten married? Just–just had a baby–brady– when we found out that she was sick–cancer, and at the end of our fight, I took her to venice, and she died in my arms.

Chad: How–how do you go on?

John: Well, you know, initially, I just knew that I had to be there for brady. I mean, it’s not like I was ever gonna stop missing isabella. That was never gonna happen. But, you know, slowly, my life started to fill up–obviously, bill, doc, and her kids– and now, when I remember isabella, I just think about how lucky I was to have had her before I had to say goodbye.

Chad: See, that’s the difference, though. You got to say goodbye. I never did.

Ej: It’s not that I can’t wait to sever our marital bond, samantha. But there’s a lot going on right now. Abigail’s death, the birth of shawn’s baby–

Sami: Wait, wait, wait. Sorry, what does shawn’s baby have to do with whether or not you sign these papers today?

Ej: My point is that it’s obvious I have a lot on my plate. So maybe we could table this for the moment? There’s no pressing need to finalize the divorce right now.

Sami: Yes, actually, there is. Lucas and I are getting married again.

Lucas: Are you saying i shouldn’t ask sami to marry me?

Kate: No. No, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying that you have a lot going on right now, and you might not be able to focus on the wedding when you’re worrying about whether your bride is going to find out that you were the one behind her kidnapping.

Lucas: What, is this your way of suggesting I tell sami the truth?

Kate: No, it’s my way of suggesting that you get rid of this debilitating stress. You’ve already blown your sobriety to hell, lucas.

Lucas: You know what? There’s not gonna be any more stress. As soon as I marry sami, the stress will be gone! I mean, there’ll be stress, but it’ll be a different kind of stress–it’ll go away!

Kate: I know you know better than this. You know better than to pin your emotional well-being on sami brady. Lucas, look at your brother. Look at philip. He allowed himself to be consumed with his feelings for chloe. Did it make him happy? No. It didn’t relieve his stress. All it did was release this– this terrible stream of dark impulses.

Lucas: So you’re comparing me to philip? You think I’m gonna snap, right? You think I’m gonna end up in a mental institution like my brother?

Kate: Lucas, stop, don’T. Don’T. Philip did not snap. He had issues. He had issues that he needed to get help for.

Lucas: Issues that caused him to fake his own death.

Kate: I’m just so– I’m worried.

Lucas: Stop saying that! Stop saying you’re worried about me, okay? You have no reason to be worried about me! I would never do anything to abigail! I would never–I would never k– I can’t even say it. She’s my niece. I would never do anything wrong. I would never hurt her like that. I respect her! I loved her! She was a great mother! And to think I had anything to do with her death– I couldn’t go on.

Kate: Oh…

Lucas: I’m telling you right now, I couldn’t go on.

[Dramatic music]

Lucas: And I know I can’t take it back. I can’t take back what I did, but I can promise to be the best husband I can possibly be. I mean, that’d be a good way to make it up to her, right?

Lucas: Sami means everything to me.

Lucas: So does that mean I have your blessing?

Kate: You have my blessing, yes. You have my undying support, and you’re gonna need it. Believe me. Baby, I love you. I love you so much.

Lucas: I love you too.

Kate: Okay. Okay. I’m sorry. You take care of yourself, please, okay?

Ej: [Scoffs] So this is what you really want? To spend the rest of your days married to your very own kidnapper?

Sami: [Scoffs] Actually, I’m divorcing him.

Ej: My conviction was overturned.

Sami: Oh, please. That doesn’t prove that you were innocent.

Ej: Oh, samantha, when are you going to wake up and see what’s staring you right in the face?

Sami: You’re staring me right in the face with your crazy conspiracy theories about lucas. Listen, we can all see that you’re just doing that to deflect from your own guilt. You’re the psychopath who kidnapped me and then lied to me about it.

Belle: Sami, I think you’re wrong.

Sami: Of course you do. You’re his lawyer. You’re the one who got him off of the charges.

Belle: Ej was framed by a very powerful force.

Sami: Yes, of course, old scratch at it again. But all he did was make sure that a guilty man was sentenced to prison. In fact, it was the one time he was on the side of the angels.

Ej: Samantha, you have to see reason.

Sami: No, I don’T. I don’t have to see anything. What I know for sure–no one will ever change my mind– you are the one who kidnapped me.

Eric: Dad, I am not about to meddle in nicole’s relationship.

Roman: Nobody’s saying you should do that, okay? I’m just saying you need to make a decision about what you want–

Eric: Dad, I’ve already made my decision.

Roman: You sure about that? Because from what I can tell, you’re still thinking things over. Maybe you need to take a page from sami’s book–broken legs, broken planes–nothing comes between that girl and whatever she wants, and look, okay? Don’t get me wrong. I like rafe a lot. He is a good guy–a really good guy and a really good friend. But that doesn’t mean he is who nicole’s supposed to be with.

Eric: Nicole and I have already had our chance, and you see how that ended up?

Roman: Yeah, well, rafe and nicole had their chance to get married too, and they didn’T. Okay, now they postponed the wedding because rafe is leading the investigation into abigail’s death.

Eric: Which means he has his priorities in order.

Roman: Which also means that if you still have feelings for nicole, you got time to do something about it, and if it were me, I wouldn’t wanna miss the chance to say something– to talk to her about it, because I wouldn’t wanna regret it later down the road because I didn’T.

Rafe: Well, I think it’s great that abe and paulina grabbed the opportunity to get married when they could, because…you know, with lani confessing, you never know when life can change in an instant.

Nicole: I know. Life is uncertain. That is for sure. But our situation is nothing like abe and paulina’s, and, like, you’re under enough pressure as it is to get this case solved. So I don’t want you to feel like you have to make big plans for our wedding.

Rafe: Well, I’m definitely not feeling the pressure about that. Or is this about something else?

Nicole: Well, rafe and i plan on rescheduling our wedding soon.

Kate: Hmm, well, that wasn’t what I was getting at.

John: What are you getting at?

Kate: Well, eric, I’m sure you believe in signs.

Eric: Yeah, signs?

Kate: Yeah–you came back to salem, right? You were forced out of the priesthood, and then nicole postponed her wedding.

Roman: Kate, what are you doing?

Kate: I’m asking questions.

Roman: No, you’re not. You’re stirring the pot. We talked about this. It’s none of our business.

Rafe: Nicole, what are you saying? Are you avoiding making wedding plans because you don’t want to get married?

Chad: I never got to take abby to venice or any of the other places that we wanted to go. Either she couldn’t get away or I couldn’t get away or the kids were in school. Though, we always just put it off. You know, thinking about it, we had all this time. You know, the last conversation we had was about taking the– taking our kids to a movie, and taking that trip to boston to go see jack. You know, surprise him for his birthday. She wanted to go at night. But…

John: But?

Chad: It just seemed so last-minute, you know? And I just thought it would’ve been too much work to get the kids together and get to the airport. So I said–so I said why don’t we go the next morning? And she s–agreed. She said, “yeah, you know, what difference would a day make?”

[Chuckles] Well, you know, it turns out that it makes all the difference in the world.

[Sniffles]

[ Screaming ]

Chad: If we had gone to boston that night, abby would still be alive.

[Sniffles] I took the–I–I took the kids to a movie, and I left her alone.

John: No, no, no, chad, you didn’t have any idea what was gonna happen. There’s no way you could’ve known what was gonna happen. You just said that you were gonna take the kids to the movies that night?

Chad: Yeah, I was with abby in our room. I was getting ready before i went to go–I went to go get the kids.

[Sniffles]

John: Before you left… what was the last thing you said to each other?

Chad: [Sighs]

[Laughs] She told me that she loved me.

[Sobs]

[Sniffles] And I told her that i loved her too.

John: Mm-hmm.

Chad: I mean, the way that she looked at me and said it, it melts my heart, I mean, that smile… everything about her, I just, I– I took for granted.

John: What do you think you took for granted?

Chad: The amount of time that I would have with her.

[Sniffles] If I had only known, I wouldn’t have–I wouldn’t have wasted so much–so much time.

John: What do you think you wasted time on?

Chad: [Sniffles] Doing anything but loving her, and letting–letting her know how–how–how much she meant to me, and that she was my everything–telling her that she was my everything.

John: She knew. She knew, kid.

Chad: [Sobbing]

Ej: Fine, you want to be an idiot? Be my guest.

Sami: Oh. Thanks.

Ej: Satisfied?

Sami: Yes. Actually, I am. It’s exactly what I wanted. So belle, word of warning if you plan on staying in this house much longer: Just make sure you don’t get chained up in the basement. No, no, I’ll get the door myself, thanks. You’re gonna have to close it, though.

Ej: Okay. Like pulsing, electric shocks,

Marlena: I hope I’m not interrupting.

Chad: No, you’re not. Did you talk to ’em?

Marlena: I did. Thomas is pretty focused on that race car set.

Chad: [Chuckles] And charlotte?

Marlena: She asked me if it were true. She asked me if her mommy had died. I told her it was true, and she cried, and I rocked her and held her, and a moment later, she was back in denial, said she knew her mommy was going to be coming home.

Chad: Well, I should probably go get–

Marlena: Chad.

[Sighs] Look, they’re playing so well, and they’re distracted, and it’s nearly their bedtime. Why don’t you let them stay with us one more night?

Chad: Are you sure?

John: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. We love those kids.

Chad: [Chuckles] Thank you.

Marlena: Of course. Chad. I think you should stay as well.

Chad: No, I’m not–I don’t want to impose.

John: You’re not an imposition, you know that.

Marlena: No, you’re not. No, we would love to have you.

Chad: [Stammers] Thank you–okay. Thank you. That would be good.

Nicole: Eric.

Eric: Nicole, I–

Nicole: What are you doing here?

Eric: I came by because I wanted to ask you something.

Nicole: Well, can it wait? I’m sorry you came all the way over here, but it’s not a really good time, so…

Eric: Yeah, sure. Is everything okay?

Rafe: Hey! I got champagne. Hey, eric.

Eric: Rafe. Champagne? You guys look like you’re gonna celebrate something.

Rafe: Well, as a matter of fact, we are.

Nicole: [Giggles] We got married.

Eric: Married? Marri–married?

Rafe: Mm-hmm.

Eric: When?

Rafe: Yeah, we just snuck in right under the wire.

Nicole: Yeah, we just came from the courthouse.

Eric: Yeah, that’s great.

[Chuckles] Congratulations.

Rafe: Thank you.

Eric: Yeah, well, I’ll leave the two of you to celebrate your wedding night.

Rafe: Right.

[Both laugh]

Lucas: How’d it go?

Sami: Success!

Lucas: Yeah?

Sami: Yup!

Lucas: He signed ’em?

Sami: Oh, yeah, I got him to sign the papers.

Lucas: Perfect. Well, in that case…

[Hums] I had a whole big speech planned, but considering how long it took us to get to this point, I figured I’d just cut to the chase.

[Sighing] Samantha gene brady, will you marry me again?

Sami: [Laughs] Yes, lucas.

Lucas: Yes?

Sami: I will. You want to put it on?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me do that. Ow.

Sami: Ooh, watch your hand.

Lucas: That’s all right. That’s all right.

Sami: Aw…

Lucas: It fits. It fits perfect.

Sami: Just like you.

[Laughs] Yay!

Ej: Now that I’ve signed those blasted divorce papers, I suppose all that’s left is for samantha to file them, and then–

Belle: And then you’ll be divorced.

Ej: And she’s lucas’ problem. I could–I could almost pity him. So where were we?

Belle: No. Hold on a second. What are you doin’?
