Victor: I wonder what’s keeping your mother.

Victoria: Well, it’s traffic, probably. I called her when she was on her way home, and she said she’d come straight back.

Nick: Can you give us a hint as to why we’ve been summoned here?

Adam: Patience, nick. I know it’s hard.

Victoria: As promised, I’m gonna fill you in about my plan on ashland. But I would like to not have to repeat myself. So can we please wait for mom to get here?

Victor: There she is.

Victoria: I’m gonna go ahead and I’m gonna cut to the chase. I’ve given this a lot of thought, and I have come up with a way to deal with ashland in the way he should be dealt with.

Victor: I’m glad to hear you say that.

Nikki: Yes. So am I.

Nick: We’ve all been worried, vick. But thank you for clarifying on where you stand with things. It’s been a little hard to tell.

Adam: I assume you have a new plan?

Victoria: You assume correctly. You each have a part to play. Each one is very crucial in pulling this off. We have to make ashland believe that this is real. Otherwise, it’s not gonna work. There is one caveat, however. If we want this plan to succeed, it means that one of us… has to fall.

[ Lock engages ]

[ Keys clacking ]

Billy: “Love is blind” — a term that has been used for a very long time, dating back to ancient greece. Chaucer used it in the middle ages and shakespeare during the renaissance. But what does it really mean? Simply that when we love someone, we tend to overlook their flaws. Or we lose sight — see what i did there? — On our own self-interest. So the power-hungry megalomaniac becomes “strong and confident” to their beloved. The manipulative control freak comes across as “protective.” And that kind of love can raise the heights of your physical senses, as well, but it can also do a number on your common sense.

[ Clears throat ] It’s just very difficult to see someone for who they really are when you love them. And maybe it’s not even love. Maybe it’s infatuation. Maybe it’s obsession. Maybe it’s something completely different.

[ Sighs ] Straight-up denial. There’s lust — that’s a biggie. Feelings of inadequacy, daddy issues, mommy issues. But the simple fact is, the crazy thing about it, no matter how smart you are or put-together or responsible or all those other things… everyone in the world is affected by this. No one is immune.

Victoria: It took a little bit of finesse, but I was able to convince ashland that i continue to support him. And that I agree that he has been set up. In our discussions, an idea struck me — that maybe adam could have framed him. He had the wherewithal and he had the motive to try to push ashland out and make me look incompetent and naive at the same time. Adam has the naked ambition and the animosity towards ashland, a long history of deception, and even lying about his own health crisis once upon a time, that make him the perfect suspect.

Adam: Okay. So your plan is to remove ashland from newman/locke by throwing me under the bus?

Victoria: It’s all for the good of the company. And —

Adam: And you. It’s perfectly clear what’s in it for our “fearless leader.”

[Sfx: Chicken clucking]

Billy: How is it that love can so completely cloud the judgment of an otherwise intelligent, rational human being? [Sighs] Even when the rest of the world clearly knows that it’s all an illusion. So, what do we do when we see someone in love with that illusion or clinging to the idea of someone that doesn’t even exist? What happens when that someone confides in us, trusts us? Where do we draw the line on setting them straight? Do we say anything at all to them? And what happens when… we love that person? Are we obligated to say something or — hey.

Lily: Hi. Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.

Billy: No. It’s okay. I, uh — I didn’t know that you were still awake.

Lily: Yeah, I’m just winding down. Is that for the podcast?

Billy: Oh, I don’t know. Maybe. Right now it just sounds like rambling.

Lily: Well, I think it was coherent enough for me to know that you were talking about victoria. And it sounds like you feel like you’re not doing enough to help her?

Victoria: All I’m asking you to do is to put aside our differences and just take a look at the whole picture. What I’m proposing — it’s just for appearances’ sake. It will stay in the family. And you will not take the fall for anything…the way that i did when you tampered with dad’s medication and I was arrested.

Adam: You think I owe you one.

Nick: Sounds right to me.

Adam: Well, nobody asked you.

Victor: Let us please stay on track.

Victoria: Adam, you being a part of this plan is crucial. You have to be on board.

Adam: [ Laughs ] I can see why you’d feel that way.

Victoria: That is not an answer.

Adam: I have yet to hear any questions. So far, all I’ve heard is demands.

[ Door opens ]

Michael: Ah! There they are. Victor.

Victor: Thanks, old boy, for coming.

Michael: I’m sorry I’m late, victoria. I was just double-checking a few things. I think I’ve — I’ve found the answer to our problem.

Victoria: Ooh. Good news?

Michael: There’s an obscure clause in the ceo contract relating to activities and behavior of the parties… after signing.

Nikki: A morals clause.

Michael: Of sorts. But the important thing is, it provides us grounds to nullify ashland’s contract.

Victoria: Thank god. I was praying there was something.

Victor: Michael, what will it take in terms of legal gymnastics?

Michael: Oh, well, the language is such that a skilled attorney — such as myself — could interpret it to include a whole host of things, all sorts of illegal activities, providing the board with the grounds to void a ceo’s contract. The offending party would be out, no recourse, no golden parachute.

Adam: Okay. Let me guess. The plan is for ashland to fabricate evidence against me — plant it — and then catch him in the act. You’re using the same aborted plan as billy did on your own husband?

Victoria: Oh, I never thought of it that way. You’re right. That’s a very good parallel.

Nikki: However, unlike that scheme, this would just be all for show where you’re concerned.

Adam: Hmm. Well, um, for this all to, uh, play out correctly, I would need to stay on as temporary ceo.

[ Nick and victoria scoff ]

Nick: Seriously?

Victor: Now, son, since ashland locke and victoria are no longer flying to tuscany, there’s no sense in you staying on as ceo, is there?

Adam: I have the utmost confidence in victoria to sell this to ashland. I mean, if anything, it’s gonna free her up to concentrate on your maneuvers and kind of figure out, you know —

Nick: How is victoria gonna get him to buy this? Ashland is a lot of things. Stupid is not one of them.

Victoria: Is that what you’ve been thinking about this whole time? How you’re gonna stay in my chair a little bit longer? You know it was all supposed to be temporary, don’t you?

Adam: If you’ll let me finish my thought. In order for me to fall from grace, I need somewhere to fall from. So you can tell your hubby that victor insisted on it because he’s upset that you keep siding with ashland. And then when the “proof” comes out that I set him up, um, you can have dad fire me. For appearances’ sake. ‘Cause, like you said, it won’t be real. However, I trust that this tweak, uh, will improve the plan significantly.

[ Alert sounds ] Well, what do you know? Someone is trying to break into my work computer as we speak. Who could that be? I wonder.

Victoria: It’s ashland. He’s already taken the bait.

Nikki: That was quick.

Michael: Eager to save his good name. Not a moment to lose.

Victor: Adam, can you remotely change the setting and let him gain access?

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Then do it.

Adam: I take this to mean we’re gonna stick to the original plan and I’ll just carry on as temporary ceo?

Ashland: [ Breathes deeply ] Ah.

[ Keys clacking ]

[ Computer beeps ] Finally. Okay. Let’s see what we’ve got.

[ Keys clacking ]

Nick: If ashland’s already messing with your computer, it sounds like the plan’s in motion.

Adam: I have the ability to bounce him back out. Or I could let him stay and rifle through everything and do his worst. It’s your plan. Your call.

Victoria: I think your idea is sound. We’ll run with it. As you said, it solidifies the plan.

Adam: I think so.

Victoria: So I will tell ashland that dad insisted that you stay put, as you’ve suggested.

Nikki: How can you be sure ashland will buy it?

Victoria: Well, I will just tell him that I — I didn’t fight it that hard because I saw it as a way for us to keep an eye on adam while this unfolds. And he will become obsessed about setting you up as the one behind all the “lies” about him faking his illness.

Adam: I will be the sacrificial lamb.

Victoria: And I will be his constant cheerleader. Questions? Concerns?

Nick: Yeah. Like a dozen.

Victoria: But other than that, you’re good?

Nick: Yeah, it sounds like you and adam are doing all the heavy lifting and we’re just kind of winging it, so…

Victor: We’ll keep each other informed.

Victoria: Absolutely. That’s key.

Michael: Always good to have one’s stories straight.

Nikki: My immediate concern, darling, is you. I mean, the stress of continuing this charade with a man you now despise…

Victoria: Mother, please trust me on this. I can handle it. And it’s all gonna work out in the end.

Victor: Your husband is a desperate man, sweetheart. And your plan feeds right into his paranoia and delusions. While he’s preparing to take down adam, we will all prepare to take him down.

Victoria: You were very amenable to this from the very beginning. I have a feeling that you contacted my father after we spoke.

Michael: Of course I did. I work for victor. He’d already instructed me to find something in the contract we might be able to use against ashland. Naturally, I informed him that you had come to me with the same request.

Victoria: Naturally.

Michael: I can’t imagine you’d have a problem with it since we both have the same goals.

Victoria: You’re right. I don’T. Thank you, everyone. I’m really glad that we’re all on the same page.

Nick: I’m just glad you see ashland for who he really is and you understand that he has got to go.

Adam: Victoria, you had, uh, one caveat. Now I have mine. We’re going up against a shrewd, clever, extremely resourceful man who has managed to escape accountability for his whole life. I imagine at some point he’s gonna trip up over his own ego. But until then, we need to be careful and vigilant. Which boils down to…never underestimate your opponent.

[ Door closes ]

Billy: So, if you could tell that was about victoria after that last little snippet, then the newmans sure as hell will be able to tell, and she will, too.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Billy: So probably not the best subject for a podcast right about now.

Lily: Well, forget the podcast. I mean, clearly this is bothering you.

Billy: Yeah. It’s just something that I’m dealing with, a little dilemma. You know, after learning the truth about ashland and how that’s affecting victoria, I have to question — do I stick my nose in it, or do I stay the hell out?

[ Keys clacking ]

[ Doorknob rattling ]

Sally: Adam, are you in there? Adam?

Adam: Oh, you’re here late.

Sally: Why is your door locked?

Adam: Uh, it’s been a long day. Why don’t we, um, go somewhere where we can talk and have a drink?

Sally: Okay.

[ Lock disengages ] I’m tamra, and I lost my son tyler

Victor: Michael, good work, as always.

Michael: Thank you. Whatever I can do to help stick it to ashland, just let me know. After that stint in a filthy south american jail, I’m more than ready to see the bastard get his.

Nick: Just glad you made it out safe. And that you’re on our side.

Michael: Me too. What ashland pulled with your family is outrageous.

Nikki: [ Scoffs ] You’ll get no argument from me.

Victoria: Or me.

Michael: All right, well, keep me apprised. Victor, good night.

Victor: Thank you for your work, old boy.

Michael: Alright.

Victor: Nice to see you.

Michael: Thank you.

Victor: Alright.

Michael: Good night, all.

Nikki: Thank you, michael.

Victoria: Good night.

[ Door closes ]

Nikki: So, what’s our next step?

Victor: That depends on how ashland locke will handle the “breach” to adam’s computer.

Victoria: It would be interesting to see how much he shares with me.

Victor: We’ll take our lead from you, and that way, we can all work together.

Victoria: Well, you three will, and michael. But adam — I’m not holding my breath.

Nikki: You think he was being disingenuous?

Victoria: Do you seriously think that we can count on him? Didn’t you see how his first concern was hanging onto his shiny new title? Adam only cares about what’s in it for adam. He doesn’t care about this family.

Victor: Sweetheart, I know that the two of you had your differences.

Victoria: Dad, do you really not see what’s going on here? By putting him in charge, even if it’s temporary, you gave him a taste of that power again. Worse yet, you gave him hope.

Victor: I’m very sorry you see it that way.

Nick: She sees it like that ’cause it’s true.

Victoria: He and I have been adversaries from the very start. And now adam has a vested interest in seeing me fail.

Sally: Victoria is using you as bait?

Adam: Mm-hmm. She gets ashland to frame me with phony “evidence,” in an effort to get himself out of his lies.

Sally: Only he’ll be caught doing it.

Adam: That is right. And then the company can invoke a clause in his contract and vote to kick him out.

Sally: Man. Some cosmic justice right there. It’s elegant, too.

Adam: It is a decent plan, and it can be successful. It’s actually already in motion.

Sally: Seriously?

Adam: Mm-hmm. When you found my office door locked, ashland was in there, hacking into my computer, looking for dirt.

Sally: But you knew he was in there and didn’t stop him?

Adam: I gave him access, remotely.

Sally: On purpose?

Adam: That’s right. In real time, while dad, victoria, nick, and nikki all watched.

Sally: So, this whole plan kind of hinges on you going along with everything. That’s not a bad spot to be in.

Adam: Well, great minds think alike.

Sally: It gives you leverage.

Adam: Oh, big time. More than you even know.

Sally: Keep talking.

Adam: I, uh, made it clear that before I let ashland past the firewall, if I agreed to be this, uh, pretend-patsy, that they have to keep me on as temporary ceo.

Sally: Wait — you were able to pull that off, even though ashland and victoria aren’t leaving town?

Adam: Oh, I just, uh, pitched it as I was the ultimate team player and I was just trying to make victoria’s brilliant plan, uh, even more foolproof. And she accepted ’cause it was an improvement.

Sally: And because she really didn’t have a choice. Well played.

Adam: Eh. I thought so.

Sally: Well, you’ve positioned yourself so that you can better control the outcome in the short term — and your future.

Ashland: Thank you.

[ Sighs ] Michael baldwin. Welcome home. How was your trip? Oh, oh, hold on. Uh, since victor bought into the lies that someone planted about me in peru for you to find, i would imagine your trip was productive?

Michael: Very productive, until I was thrown in jail.

Ashland: [ Gasps ] Jail? Really? That sounds so extreme. You must have really pissed off the locals.

Michael: I sure pissed someone off.

Ashland: Mm.

Billy: Clearly, victoria was upset. She needed to talk to someone. And I’ve been trying really hard not to get involved, but then she goes and tells me that this whole time ashland had been lying about having cancer.

Lily: My god, every time i think about that disgusting lie, it makes me sick.

Billy: In order to create a beachhead to get control of newman. It’s beyond sickening.

Lily: Yeah.

Billy: Look, victoria needed to confide in someone, right? And she didn’t want to go to her family because the newmans are who they are, so she came to me.

Lily: I’m glad you were there to listen.

Billy: After everything she said, I was sure that she was gonna kick ashland to the curb, but she didn’T. And then nick goes and asks me to go to talk to her again, which just proves how desperate nick is. But I told him I didn’t think it was gonna do any good. Victoria’s gonna handle this the way that she wants to handle it, without any involvement from anyone else.

Lily: Yeah. And you’re right. This is victoria’s problem. She needs to figure out how to deal with this.

Victor: Sweetheart, I do not want you to worry about adam. I will keep him in line and make sure that he does not interfere with your plan.

Victoria: I know you’ll try. And I can’t ask for more than that.

Nikki: Now that you’ve told us your intentions, we will make it work. We have to. That man does not deserve you, or a place in our family, or in this company.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] You know that I adore you. I love you. And you have my support, and you always will.

Victoria: You know, when i think about what he did to me — what he did to all of us — it’s just — it’s horrible. Then when I walked out of here that night and and checked into that hotel, I was — I was devastated.

Nikki: Oh, sweetheart, of course you were.

Victoria: And until I came up with this solution, I — i honestly — I didn’t have a clue how to handle it. But I knew that I had to be the one to fix this. And you were right, mom. I had all of those thoughts and feelings that you were worried about. I was feeling shame and hurt… and anger.

Ashland: My baby. I’m so sorry.

Ashland: Well, you certainly don’t look any worse for wear after your adventure.

Michael: [ Chuckles ] Is that what we’re calling it?

Ashland: I guess the charges didn’t stick, huh?

Michael: Yeah, well, bogus charges rarely do.

Ashland: Precisely. And the ones leveled against me aren’t going to stick, either.

Michael: Time will tell.

Ashland: I fully intend to prove that I was set up, and once I do, the rest of you will realize how wrong you were about me. Not that I’d expect any of you to admit it.

Michael: I am dying to see how this turns out.

Sally: You are taking on a pivotal role to try and help victoria rid herself of that jerk and prevent the company from being stolen from your family. So you should be rewarded. When all this is over, victor should hand you ashland’s vacated co-ceo spot, at the very least. Throw you a damn parade.

Adam: Ha ha. Yeah, right.

Sally: No. I mean it. If they aren’t prepared to show you the respect that you deserve, well, it seems to me that there are plenty of ways victoria’s plan could go south.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Nick: Can we talk?

Adam: Uh, sally’s up to speed on everything. So feel free to, uh, let us know what’s going on, and don’t hold back or speak cryptically.

Nick: Fine. I’m here to make sure we can trust you.

Meet ron.

Lily: Look, in spite of everything that’s happened between the two of you in the past —

Billy: Oh, that’s just a polite way of saying “the hell that I put her through.”

Lily: No. She still confides in you. And she trust that you have her best interests at heart.

Billy: A hundred percent.

Lily: And, look, I know that you didn’t seek this out. You know, I know victoria kind of laid this on you out of the blue.

Billy: Yes, and now the whole world knows that ashland is even more of a cold-blooded monster than we first realized.

Lily: I know, but, billy, you don’t have to rush in and be her protector.

Billy: [ Scoffs ] Lily, we have kids together. And I do not trust ashland. I don’t want him anywhere near my kids.

Lily: Victoria would never put them in harm’s way. She’s way too good of a mother. Look, I know that it’s been years since you two broke up, but I think there’s still a part of you that feels responsible for her safety and well-being. But, billy, you’re not, okay? I think that’s something that you need to work out.

Victoria: Ashland.

Ashland: Oh, hi. I-I was just sending a text. Mwah. How are you doing?

Victoria: I was, um — I was with my family.

Ashland: How did that go?

Victoria: I did what i intended to do. I laid the groundwork and let them know that we’re close to discovering who’s behind this smear campaign against you.

[ Sighs ] That’s the good news.

Ashland: What’s the bad news?

Adam: Well, what can I say that will, uh, convince you it’s safe to trust me?

Sally: Rhetorical question.

Nick: I need to know you’re sincere about playing your part.

Adam: My assigned role, you mean?

Nick: This isn’t a game, adam. There’s a lot more at stake here than just your future.

Sally: By which you mean, victoria’s future.

Adam: I think sally summed it up pretty well. Look, as sorry as I am for victoria, the pain she’s in, she made her own bed, choosing to trust that guy. The consequences of which could have lasting effects on newman/locke, our father’s legacy — meaning, it does affect all of us.

Nick: Which is exactly my concern. That you’re only thinking about how this affects you or how you can come out ahead. That you’re willing to jeopardize everything our father has worked for, what he has spent his entire life building, for your own personal gain.

Adam: So, we’re back to that again? It’s greedy, unprincipled adam, the family scapegoat. Can’t be trusted unless in the dire of circumstances — which, apparently, I can’t even be trusted then. Do you really that think I’m capable of screwing over the whole family to take what isn’t mine?

Nick: Absolutely. There’s not a doubt in my mind. But I do know that you have changed. Johnson & johnson

Lily: Look, I know that victoria is in a terrible position and that it’s stirring up these protective feelings in you again. But maybe instead of allowing yourself to get drawn into it, maybe you use this opportunity to try and contain it, you know, whether that’s through your podcast, right, like how you did with delia. Or — I don’t know — maybe in your own head.

Billy: You know that there’s nothing romantic going on, right? This is not about me having these longing feelings for what we used to have.

Lily: No, I know. I’m not saying this because I’m jealous in any way or threatened. I’m just saying this because i love you and I know how hard you’ve worked to get to where you are. And I’m just so, so incredibly proud of you.

Billy: Thank you.

Lily: And, look, I’m here for you to lean on as you continue to deal with whatever there’s left to deal with. You know, and not that that means that everything’s just resolved and life is perfect. But I think we can get close to that. And I think you and I are pretty good proof of that.

Billy: Yes. We are. And you are by far the smartest, most amazing, most supportive woman that I have ever known. And I love you so much, and I am incredibly grateful that we found each other.

Lily: Me too.

Nikki: I didn’t want to say this in front of victoria, but this plan of hers…

Victor: I can see you’re worried.

Nikki: Well, there is so much risk. What if ashland catches on? God knows what he would do. I’m most concerned about her emotional well-being. To have to swallow her true feelings and endure more of his lies, his phony professions of love, and, ugh, just — just his touch now that she knows how unconscionable he is.

Victor: I understand.

Nikki: Victor, don’t tell me how strong she is. I know that she can bear all of this. I know that. I just hate that it has come to this. I mean, there are limits, no matter how strong and determined you are.

Victor: I love our daughter. I will not allow any harm to come to her. If this should get out of hand in any way —

Nikki: I know you will swoop in and rescue her. You don’t have to reassure me of that.

Victor: You know, she wants to take the lead in this. And I respect that and I admire her for it. I’ll let her do it. Meanwhile, all of us work together to get that bastard.

Nikki: Yeah. For ashland locke to be removed from our lives once and for all.

Victor: Yeah.

Victoria: You’re not gonna like this. I didn’T.

Ashland: What has victor done now?

Victoria: He’s decided to keep adam on as ceo for the time being.

Ashland: [ Exhales heavily ]

Victoria: Even though we canceled our flight to tuscany.

Ashland: Oh, wh– why would — okay. Never mind. Uh, let me guess. Adam has been working behind the scenes to make this happen?

Victoria: Oh, no doubt.

Ashland: Ah, dammit. How did you respond when your father told you?

Victoria: Well, first i pushed back very hard. And then I thought, maybe this is the way that we could work it to our advantage. Having adam in one place so that we can keep tabs on him while we prove that he’s the one who’s been targeting you all along. That’s all that matters to me — exposing adam and making sure that he’s punished. I promise you I’m trying to do everything I can to get you out of this mess and redeem you in my family’s eyes. They know how much I believe that you’re innocent and that I’m not gonna back down, I’m not gonna let them drive you away from me.

Ashland: Thank you for believing in me.

Victoria: So, what is our next step? Do you have any idea?

Ashland: I have a few ideas. But, um, there’s no point in telling you until I’ve zeroed in on the one that’s going to work.

Victoria: Why hold back? If you tell me, maybe I can build on whatever it is you have. I can give you some advice. I mean, we’re a team, right? We’re in on this together?

Ashland: This is not a trust thing. Sometimes I just have to work out things on my own. Let an idea percolate. You understand?

Victoria: Yes. Of course.

Ashland: I’ll get you some coffee.

Adam: So, let me get this straight. You admit that I have changed, but you still don’t trust me?

Nick: I’ve seen you make a real effort to live your life differently. At times, you’ve been very selfless, which I have acknowledged.

Adam: Yeah. Grudgingly.

Nick: That’s because I know you. And I know what you’re capable of. And this is exactly the kind of situation that always brings out the worst in you because it involves our father and the family business and all the baggage that goes along with that. Who’s the favorite, who isn’T. Will you ever be able to prove yourself to the old man? But, adam, there’s so much more to it than that. Ashland locke provides a very different threat to this family. And no matter how messed up we are at times, we always show up for each other. Always. Just like how you did for faith. You saved her life. You risked your own to make sure she made it to the hospital, and then you gave her one of your kidneys. That tells me the changes you’ve made in your life are very real. And this is one of those situations where we have to come together. And I really hope that’s the man who shows up, the one you told me you aspire to be, the one who’s willing to put himself out there for something other than himself… the one who’s willing to take a look at the bigger picture for the sake of the family. For your family.

Nick: Hey, please tell me you talked to victoria.

Billy: Yeah. I did. And it’s not the result that we were hoping for.

Nick: [ Sighs ] What happened?

Billy: Well, she heard me out, and that was the end of it. And she has no plan on telling me what’s up with ashland, how she plans to handle him. And she completely dismissed the fact that he might could be potentially threatening towards her. Even though she’s very aware of what he’s capable of.

Nick: I was really hoping you’d be able to get through to her before she goes to italy.

Billy: Yeah, well, your father said that he’d send his security detail along with her. And she seems to think that’s all the protection that she needs. Although I’m not sure how much help they’re gonna be when she’s alone with ashland behind the walls of the palazzo.

Nick: Not much. This is just so frustrating.

Billy: And clearly you haven’t been able to get through to her, either.

Ashland: Well, thank you for the update on the weather. But apparently this trip was not meant to be. Yeah, we’ll, uh, reschedule for another time. Go on home. Get some sleep. Yeah.

Victoria: What’s wrong?

Ashland: Uh, just something about the conversation with the pilot — something about his tone. He seemed relieved that we’re not going.

Victoria: Well, yeah, he probably didn’t want to fly through those storms.

Ashland: Yeah. Maybe. But, you know, I looked earlier on my weather app. I didn’t see any storms over the atlantic.

Victoria: Well, you do know that the pilots have more sophisticated technology than we do.

[ Both chuckle ]

Ashland: Or…

Victoria: [ Scoffs ] My father asked the pilot to stall us as long as possible.

[ Sighs ] Oh, gosh, that is just so exasperating and so on brand for my dad. The lengths he goes to, to try to control me.

Ashland: It’s par for the course, really. Especially if your family is worried that I’m gonna do some kind of harm to you — which is preposterous. But if that’s really what they believe, I could certainly understand that your father would do anything he could to protect his daughter.

Victoria: Well, I guess he got his wish. Because we’re staying.

Ashland: But not because of his games. We’re staying because we’ve finally figured out who set me up — and we’re gonna prove it.

Rey: Well, I am glad you dealt with all the paperwork to officially end your leave of absence, huh?

Chance: Last obstacle out of the way.

Rey: Mm-hmm. You got a big day tomorrow. I don’t want to keep you if you got to go. We’ll be spending plenty of time together soon.

Chance: Are you regretting having me back as your partner already?

Rey: Yeah. [ Chuckles ] You’ll probably get sick of me first.

Chance: No, I can actually hang for a bit tonight, man. Abby’s over at society, and the nanny’s got the baby, so I’m good.

Rey: Alright, well, I can stick around for a while.

Chance: Cool.

Rey: So, are you still feeling good about your decision to come back?

Chance: [ Chuckles ] Why? I seem nervous or something?

Rey: It would only be natural, after being gone for so long.

Chance: Hey, man, I’m excited. And I’m just ready for everything to start feeling normal again. You know what I mean?

Rey: Yeah, I do. I get it. After sharon’s cancer, faith’s surgery, and then mariah’s kidnapping, I was so relieved when everything finally settled down. It’s good to get back into a routine, have a job that validates you and that you’re good at.

Chance: That’s exactly what I’m talking about. I mean, I just can’t wait to get back to that life that I had planned before this mission just threw everything off track.

Chelsea: Oh, that’s fantastic. I’m so excited you were able to come through so quickly at such a reasonable price point. Okay. I will be in touch. Thank you.

Abby: Well, it sounds like whoever was on the other end of that line had good news for you.

Chelsea: You know, there were a lot of bumps in the road since I got back to town, but I didn’t let them derail me.

Adam: Just, uh, working on some ideas for newman/locke.

Billy: Actually, that’s a great idea idea, except victoria will hate it. It would only alienate her further. Can I tell you what I would like to do to ashland? Treat him the same way that he, victor, and adam treated gaines. Lock him in a basement somewhere, undisclosed location, and leave him there until he surrenders.

Nick: Yeah, you’re kidding, right? That is the worst idea I have ever heard.

Billy: Yeah. You’re right. The worst.

Nick: No, look, we’re not doing that, alright? It’s stupid. The fact that we’re even thinking about it just shows how desperate we are.

Billy: Well, unfortunately, nick, the only person more desperate than us is victoria. Because besides something happening to our children, this is her worst nightmare. She’s been played like a fool and made to look weak and incompetent.

Nick: Well, she’s gonna react in one of two ways. She’s either gonna go into denial and refuse to see ashland for who he really is. Or she’s gonna go after him herself and prove that he’s the fool for ever underestimating her in the first place.

Billy: Well, whichever path she chooses, she has made it very clear she does not want help from us.

Ashland: I know you were hoping to get away from your family, get away from the pressure they keep putting you under. I wish we could do that. God knows we could use the time to — to reconnect and recuperate from these attacks.

Victoria: It’s okay. If we have to put off the trip, it’ll be worth it. It’ll give us the opportunity to prove that adam is the one framing you.

Ashland: You know, there is another upside to staying here. Adam won’t have to fill in for us. He’ll be stripped of his fake ceo title before he even has a chance to get in here and kick his feet up onto your desk.

Victoria: You like the idea of that, don’t you?

Ashland: I do. Can you blame me? After what he’s done to us?

Victoria: Well, we can’t be one hundred percent sure that he’s guilty just yet. It’s just a hunch that I had.

Ashland: But it’s a good hunch. I’m surprised I didn’t think of it myself, in fact.

[ Chuckles ] It makes all the sense in the world. No one benefits more from my downfall than adam.

Victoria: Well, motive is not going to be enough to convince my family that adam did this to you. You know they still believe that you lied about your cancer to trick me into marrying you and to go along with the merger.

Ashland: We’re gonna change their minds about that.

Victoria: So, what is your first step? Do we have a plan? What are you recommending

Rey: Thank you. Look, I know it hasn’t been easy to readjust to life back at home after everything you’ve been through, but, you know, i respect the way that you’re tackling it head-on.

Chance: Appreciate that, man. I was, uh, kind of forced to take that direct approach. Plan a — you know, toughing it out — that was a failure.

Rey: Yeah, but you could’ve called it quits and given up, but you didn’T.

Chance: That was never an option. Abby — she never gave up on me, even though she was told I was never coming back. I got to make good on those promises that I made her, you know? Better late than never.

Rey: Yeah, I don’t think you’re late. But I have seen “never,” and i wouldn’t recommend it. The guys trying to hide their pain — they usually end up trashing their relationships, distancing themselves from their families. It’s a good way to end up miserable.

Chance: Well, if I’m being honest, I was probably heading down that path if abby and devon hadn’t convinced me to go to therapy.

Rey: You talked to devon about this?

Chance: Yeah. Yeah. He’s been a pretty good friend through all this. He was definitely worried about me for a while, which was part of the reason we changed the whole visitation agreement.

Rey: Yeah. Your parenting situation is not simple. But I’m glad everybody found a solution that works for them.

Chance: Devon’s a good father. He’s got an incredible bond with dominic.

Rey: How is that for you? Being dominic’s “other” father?

Chance: You know, I — i just — I’m working really hard to develop that same kind of bond with him. But, uh… I don’t know. I just — I don’t have the same natural instincts as devon. And abby said that that’s just gonna take time. But I just can’t help feeling like I’m never gonna catch up. You know, I’m never gonna be on the same level as her and devon.

Rey: I think I know a little about what that feels like.

Chelsea: I admit, I had some lingering hope that adam and i would get back together. I thought maybe we could reconnect, see if there was anything left between us. But then for every beautiful memory I would remind him of, he would remind me of some way that we devastated each other. He just wasn’t willing to take that risk. And eventually I agreed. Too much has happened between us.

Abby: I’ve had relationships like that before, where there’s still love there, but the trust is gone. Cutting your losses and walking away — it’s hard to do.

Chelsea: Yeah, but you’re happy now, right?

Abby: I am. Yeah. And I have faith that you are gonna find the same thing with someone who’s a better match for you than adam. Someone who’s more emotionally stable.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] Well, i mean, adam’s doing well. He’s grown up a lot.

Abby: Hmm. I’ve heard that from other people, and — well, I hope it continues, but when it comes to adam, you can never be sure.

Victor: It’s not that there’s anything wrong with your idea. In fact, I like your vision. The timing is the issue.

Sally: But why would you ever discourage strengthening our brand or increasing our profits? How could there ever be a bad time for that?

Victor: I know you only want what’s best for my son, okay? Would you mind giving us a few moments alone?

Adam: I will come find you after we’re done.

Sally: Okay. I will be in my office.

Adam: Okay.

Victor: Well, now, she seems to be a very supportive coo.

Adam: If you are implying that she’s just kissing up to me, you are wrong. Sally’s always given me her honest reaction, good or bad. I like that about her. She’s direct. She says what she means. Frankly, we could use a little more of that around here.

Victor: Well, it’s clear to me that she is very eager for you to make your mark on the company.

Adam: Well, she doesn’t see the point in sitting on our hands, and neither do I.

Victor: Son.

[ Breathes deeply ] You’re talking to your old man, who’s had a lot of experience in life and in business. I’m warning you — don’t get too close. Don’t you ever confuse the professional with the personal.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] I don’t know why we’re still talking about her. She isn’t the problem. Ashland is. We should be focused on how to get rid of him.

Victor: You don’t think I am?

Ashland: The one good thing about adam planting so much incriminating evidence against me is that there’s more for us to investigate. There’s a better chance that he made a mistake along the way.

Victoria: Well, I’m sure he did. I mean, people who pull cons like this that are so elaborate — they usually do. It’s their arrogance that trips them up.

Ashland: What do you mean?

Victoria: To come up with something this extreme and to convince yourself that you could actually pull it off, you would have to think that you were far more intelligent than everyone else and that everybody else was just too dense to understand it. You would have to think that you are invincible. And that kind of overconfidence is beyond arrogance. And I’m counting on that to bring adam down. Is something wrong?

Ashland: [ Sighs ] To be a thriver with metastatic breast cancer means…

Chelsea: Thanks, andy. Adam’s a great father. Really, he’s been wonderful with connor — you know, since I was away, since I’ve been back. Adam could’ve used the things i did to drive a wedge between me and my son, and he didn’t do that. And that wasn’t for my sake. It was for connor’S. He knew it wouldn’t be good for him. To me, that shows he really loves our son.

Abby: I’m not trying to insult adam. I’m really not. I’m just acknowledging the reality. My brother is a complicated person with a troubled past, which means there have been times that he wasn’t able to be there for connor when he needed him.

Chelsea: Well, that’s true. But the same could be said for me. Doesn’t make me a bad parent.

Abby: I know. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to —

Chelsea: No, no, listen, I —

[ Sighs ] If I’m coming off defensive, it just that everything you’re saying has been weighing on me. To be honest with you, since i had that breakdown, I feel terrible about letting connor down.

Abby: But you were ill. It wasn’t your fault.

Chelsea: I know. You know, my therapist tells me that I am setting a good example for him [Chuckles] By taking care of myself and trying to get better and being the best person I can be. I mean, adam’s not in therapy, but I think he’s trying to do those things, too.

Abby: Well, I will give him credit for that.

Chelsea: And what about chance? I know he’s been struggling a lot since he came back from spain.

Abby: He is. And you’re right. I would never think less of him for that.

Chelsea: Listen, we’re all just doing our best. Am I right?

Abby: Amen to that. But I am a little surprised, given your history with adam, that you’re still so protective towards him.

Chelsea: Well, we do. We have a lot of history. And we share a son. We’ll always have that bond.

Rey: Your, uh, situation with devon reminds me a lot of how i feel being around nick. I mean, it’s not exactly the same, you know. You’re dominic’s dad. I’m a stepfather to sharon’s kids. So I would never expect to have the same relationship with faith or noah — and even mariah — that nick does.

Chance: Come on, man. You and faith are super close, right? And you’re still getting to know noah.

Rey: Yeah, but when they’re all together, even though they always make me feel included and welcome, it’s like they’re the family unit and I’m on the outside. Does that make sense? I know it’s hard to explain.

Chance: No, man, I totally get it. That’s exactly how I feel. That we’re on the outside and we’re looking in, right? And, shoot, I’m dominic’s father, but sometimes it feels like devon’s claim to him is just a little bit more legitimate. And he and abby have this bond for the baby in common, and — I don’t know — I just don’t know if I’m ever gonna get there. You know, I don’t know if it’s just me being in my head, and if it is, I don’t know how to get past it.

Rey: It’s a tough situation. Especially because nobody’s done anything wrong. There’s no any bad guys to point out.

Chance: How do you deal with it? You talked to sharon?

Rey: No. No, I deal with this by myself. Maybe I just need more time.

[ Laughs ] I’m giving myself the same advice that abby keeps giving you. I have to be patient.

Chance: [ Sighs ] Well, maybe that’s the answer. We shall see.

Ashland: Um, nothing’s, uh, wrong per se. I — I — yes, I was just distracted thinking about the worst-case scenario. What if — [ Clears throat ] What if adam didn’t make any careless mistakes? What if — what if he’s covered his tracks so well, there’s no incriminating evidence to be found?

Victoria: Oh, there will be. And we’re gonna keep looking until we find it. We’re not gonna give up. We need that proof.

Ashland: Right. Your family will never believe in my innocence without it. But right now, I don’t really care about them. I care about you. If this investigation proves fruitless, will you still believe in me?

Victoria: Why are you asking me this now?

Ashland: Because I can’t shake this feeling that you somehow still have doubts about my innocence. Am I right?

Victor: I am singularly focused on getting ashland locke out of this company, out of this family, okay? That’s why I don’t want any distractions. If something happens to go wrong with victoria’s plan and the story about ashland locke becomes public knowledge, we may have to pivot on the spot.

Adam: I see where you’re coming from, but if everything goes to hell, we need something to pivot to, to distract from the fallout. We need something positive, a new initiative, something that shows that we’re still firing on all cylinders while we’re trying to distract from this fiasco. I wish you would have a little faith in my judgment, dad. I think I have earned that.

Victor: You have, son. Now, I like the idea of this streaming platform to rival all the big ones.

Adam: Well, and to beat them.

Victor: What about the real estate piece?

Adam: Okay, so…we buy land. We build our own studios to film our own shows. And then when we are not using them, we will rent them out when at a cheaper price than our competitors.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Alright. I guess the only thing I can do is go home and just hope that i don’t wake up to any bad news about victoria and ashland. But every instinct I have is telling me to rush to victoria’s rescue.

Billy: Believe me. I get it. And in the past, that approach has worked, but this is a different situation. She wants to handle ashland on her own. She doesn’t want help from us, and she does not want help from your father.

Nick: Well, you know what? I can understand why she doesn’t want my dad’s help because that usually comes with some strings attached.

Billy: It’s deeper than that. Look, of course, on one hand, she would love to be out of the control of your father. But on the other hand, she wants his approval. She always has. I have not said it to her in this way, but I feel like that was part of her initial attraction to ashland. He’s a powerful man. And your father appreciated that and the merger and all the new heights of power and influence she was reaching.

Nick: Yeah, well, if I were you, I would definitely not say that to her.

Billy: Yeah, I know, but it’s true.

Nick: And if my dad was impressed at any point, you know, he’s past that. He’s now worried just like the rest of us.

Billy: Oh, I’m sure he’s very worried that victoria risked his precious company. And that is eating away at her, and unfortunately she is gonna do everything she can to win back his respect.

Nick: You don’t think there’s any chance of reconciliation with ashland, right?

Billy: No. She’s smarter than that.

Nick: Yeah, I’d like to think so, too. I just pray that victoria has a plan, you know, a way to get him out of her life and away from newman/locke and that it’s a brilliant plan and that it’s working.

Chance: Hi, babe.

Abby: Oh, hi!

Rey: Hey. It’s good to see you ladies.

Abby: Can I get you guys something to eat? Are you hungry?

Rey: Oh, I’m just here to pick up some tres leches for sharon.

Chelsea: Nice. Actually, I’m glad we bumped into each other again because… I have something for you.

Rey: I have an idea what this could be. Yes, yes, yes. Blackhawks tickets. Whoa. Great seats. Right up against the glass.

Chelsea: Connor’s really excited. Um, I bought a couple hockey tickets, planned this whole overnight trip in chicago, and then found out I have to work. Rey was nice enough to offer to fill in for me.

Rey: It’s my pleasure. I think I’m as excited as connor is.

Abby: [ Laughs ]

Rey: Anyway, I’m gonna get that dessert.

Chelsea: I’ll join you, grab something sweet for myself.

Abby: Rey really is an amazing guy.

Chance: Yeah. Yeah, he sure is.

Abby: Chelsea almost ended his life. And look at them. They’re friends. I mean, it’s not fake or forced. They are actual friends. It’s crazy how things can change with time.

Victoria: Why would you be worried that I don’t believe you? I’m the one encouraging you to find out if adam set you up.

Ashland: I just wonder, if it came down to adam’s word versus mine, whose side would you take?

Victoria: Seriously? Look, first of all, I make it a rule to never believe one word that comes out of adam’s mouth. And secondly, if I thought that you had lied to me about being seriously ill, do you think I’d be standing here right now, strategizing with you? No. No, I wouldn’T. I would be spending every waking moment trying to figure out how to cut you out of my life for good. You’re still not convinced, are you? How can I prove to you that I’m on your side? I just heard something amazing!

Ashland: I’m sorry. Of course I know you’re on my side. I should never have raised the issue.

Victoria: No, it’s — it’s okay. I know what this must be like for you. Literally. Adam tried to frame me in the past, too.

Ashland: Wait. I’m sorry. Hold on. Adam tried to frame you, his sister? For what?

Victoria: He accused me of trying to tamper with my father’s medicine to hurt him. I was even arrested for it.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: I know. But luckily the people who believe me and love me know that I would never do something like that. So, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I let any doubt about you ever creep into my mind.

Ashland: No, no, no. Just — don’t apologize. You have nothing to apologize for. This is what adam’s sick game is doing to both of us. It’s forcing us to mistrust each other. Listen, I believe more now than ever that adam is behind this. If you can stand by me and help me find the proof I need, that would mean the world to me.

Victoria: I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.

Ashland: Okay. Okay.

Victoria: Okay.

Ashland: Thank you. Let’s go home, get some rest, and in the morning, we will put together a strategy.

Victoria: Why don’t you go ahead, okay? You need to still consider your health. I am gonna call my family and I’m gonna bring them together and let them know that our plans to go to italy have changed.

Ashland: Poor adam. He’s gonna be so disappointed.

Victoria: He is definitely not gonna be happy about the change in plans.

Chelsea: I got two.

[ Laughs ] Oh, thanks.

Chance: You know, I think it’s incredible that rey was able to forgive chelsea for everything that she did to him. And chelsea, too — she’s come a long way since then.

Abby: Yeah. I think chelsea has really turned a corner. She’s starting over, starting a business with chloe. She’s healthier and stronger. And she’s really navigating this co-parenting arrangement with adam really well.

Chance: I guess adam couldn’t go to the hockey game, huh?

Abby: No, but connor’s really lucky to have rey take him. Rey is a great father figure. Maybe that’s because that was his role with lola when she was growing up. And now with sharon’s kids. Sharon and rey even take care of christian sometimes for nick, so it’s not surprising that they welcome connor into the fold. Everybody’s a part of the family.

Chance: You know, it’s funny you say that ’cause I was just talking to rey and — well, obviously, don’t repeat this to nick, but he said sometimes he just feels like an outsider in the family.

Abby: Really? Well, I’m so sorry to hear that. I know that they would never want to make him feel that way. I hope he knows how valued and appreciated he is.

Chance: Yeah. Yeah, I think he does. You know, he just said there’s certain moments where he compares himself to nick, the “real” dad, wonders if he measures up.

Abby: Yeah. I can understand why he would feel that way. But it’s only because nick has such a tight relationship with his kids. It’s not a competition. There’s enough love to go around in this family. Mwah.

Adam: So, I can move on this right away. I already know who I want to put in charge of content, and, uh, the marketing team is in place and ready to hit the ground running.

Victor: Yeah. Well [Clears throat] It seems you have put a lot of thought into this.

Adam: Oh, well, I wouldn’t, uh, pitch you an idea that i didn’t think through. And I have a lot more ideas that I know that you will like just as much.

Victor: Yeah.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Hey, sweetheart. I thought you were on your way to italy. What happened?

Victoria: No, you did not.

Victor: Oh, so you’ve reconsidered. Well, I’m glad to hear that.

Victoria: Look, I’m in my office, and I have something that I would like to discuss with you. Now. If you’re available.

Victor: Well, now I’m discussing some business with adam as we speak.

Victoria: Perfect. He was gonna be my next call. Why don’t the two of you come here.

Abby: I’m having a great life. If this year has taught me anything, it is to be appreciative of the little things. And I have so many things to be appreciative for. I mean, I have an incredible husband. I have a wonderful little boy.

Chance: Yeah.

Abby: This great job, and we are all happy and healthy. Not trying to minimize what you’re going through.

Chance: No, no, no. I know what you meant. And, look, I know I am a work in progress, but I think tomorrow’s gonna be a big step forward.

Abby: It feels like things are finally moving in the right direction.

Victoria: Well, apparently, dad was not in favor of the plan and he somehow convinced the pilot to stay on the ground.

Nick: What’s going on?

Victoria: Thank you for coming. I was just explaining to adam that dad deliberately had my flight delayed. Which was lucky for us. It worked out in my favor. And ashland and I have changed our travel plans and we will be staying in town.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] How does that work in anyone’s favor?

Victoria: Thank you, by the way, so much for agreeing to step in as ceo, but that won’t be necessary now.

Nick: I hope by calling us all together like this, you’re ready to tell us what you’re planning. Vick, if you want me to stay out of this, I will, but I do not like being in the dark.

Victoria: I plan to fill you all in, but I’m waiting for mom to get here, which should be soon.

Victor: Where is ashland right now?

Victoria: I’m not sure. But I have a pretty good idea.

Diane: Phyllis. I didn’t know you were in town.

Phyllis: I didn’t know you were alive. I had to come see for myself.

Diane: Ah, so you came for jack. I suppose that means the two of you are together again.

Billy: Sorry I’m late. It’s been a hell of a day.

Traci: Oh, no! Everything alright? You want to talk about it?

Billy: Everything’s fine, just a little bit of work stuff. But I feel better seeing both of your faces. Hi.

Ashley: Hi.

Billy: Welcome home. I missed you.

Ashley: I missed you.

Billy: Mm.

Ashley: Mwah!

Billy: You good?

Ashley: Yeah. Long overdue visit, and I’m sorry I missed jack.

Billy: Yeah. Uh, I was a little surprised he headed back to L.A. So quickly. Obviously, he feels strongly about seeing allie again.

Ashley: Mm. That’s what I wanted to speak with you both about — keemo’s daughter and what it means for jack. Has anybody spoken to him since he left?

Traci: The only communication I’ve had is the text that he sent all three of us, that he was fine and he wasn’t sure when he’d be back.

Billy: Yeah. And I’m sure they’re in the thick of it right now, so, you know…

Ashley: Right. I’ve called him a couple times. He’s not picking up. And that text he sent us really didn’t tell us anything at all. I think that’s weird, don’t you?

Billy: No, uh, not necessarily. I mean, he’s in the middle of a life-altering situation. So maybe he’s just not up for a chat.

Ashley: Okay, look. I’ve been concerned about the situation from the start. I just have a feeling that something’s not right and that jack is headed for heartbreak.

Phyllis: Wow, the only thing that you have to talk about is jack’s love life? That’s amazing. Nothing has changed with you.

Jack: We are here to talk about kyle.

Diane: Well, it’s a relief to have you back so soon. I — I honestly didn’t think I’d ever see you again.

Phyllis: Oh, this is amazing! Still so patronizing.

Diane: Jack and I are talking about our son —

Phyllis: Yes, I’m aware of that, diane.

Diane: So, will you help me connect with him after all?

Phyllis: You don’t deserve to connect with him. You don’t deserve kyle. You didn’t deserve him before, and especially after all of this insanity.

Diane: Did you just fly out here to ruin everything for me and my son?

Jack: Actually, my plan was to forget that you existed. Phyllis is the reason I came back here at all.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Diane: Whatever brought you here, I’m so grateful.

Jack: Phyllis thinks that kyle should know everything, that it should be up to him to determine how to handle the fact that you’re still alive. Not my first instinct. Phyllis convinced me.

Diane: That’s wonderful news. Thank you.

Phyllis: I didn’t do that for you.

Diane: Understood.

Jack: I don’t want you blind-siding him by contacting him without any warning. I talk to him first. Though I can’t imagine it’s going to be anything other than a major shock to him.

Diane: Of course. It will be. Which is why I reached out to you in the first place. But when you left here, you were so certain that you would never intervene on my behalf. I wasn’t sure how to proceed.

Jack: Please tell me you haven’t contacted him yet.

Diane: No. I-I didn’T.

Phyllis: Why are you hesitating?

Diane: [ Scoffs ] You know, there is so much anger involved right now. This level of emotion might taint kyle’s reaction to the news. Perhaps I should stop being a coward and just tell him myself. She’s feeling the power of listerine.

Ashley: Don’t you think the way that allie’s existence came to light is a little bizarre? I mean, jack’s getting these mysterious texts luring him to los angeles, all the secrecy and the subterfuge? I’m wondering if there’s really two people. Maybe allie is doing all the texting.

Billy: Okay, but why would she do that?

Ashley: I don’t know, billy. But that’s the whole point. We don’t know what’s going on. Okay. Say there are two people. Why is this person injecting themselves into jack’s life, into allie’s life? To what end? Just a nice, friendly person who’s very generous and wants to connect two people that didn’t know they were family? Well, then why do they have to remain anonymous? It feels manipulative to me. It does not feel altruistic.

Traci: I hear you, and i agree. I lodged some of the same concerns. But I think that we — we can’t jump to conclusions where allie is concerned. Jack’s not naive, and he doesn’t think she had anything to do with the texts.

Ashley: Okay, but maybe he’s just so blinded. You know, he’s so happy to have found his granddaughter that he’s not seeing any red flags.

Traci: And the identity of this texter is a lasting concern, of course, but I feel like there’s something more important here. Jack has found his granddaughter, someone he never expected existed. And — and he’s eager to welcome her into the family. And I’m worried that she doesn’t share his enthusiasm. But if she does, I feel like we have to give her the benefit of the doubt and welcome her.

Ashley: Okay. What about you, billy?

Billy: We’ve talked about this already. I felt like it was a good thing that jack was gonna reach out to allie, and I still do. I feel like we have to stay neutral and not be too judgmental until we know more.

Ashley: I want to give this person the benefit of the doubt, but I believe that jack has to be cautious. And because I wasn’t able to speak with him directly, I did some looking into allie’s background, okay? And it was a little interesting, what I found.

Phyllis: Wow, listen to you making threats. Making threats. Very, very diane of you.

Diane: I want to protect kyle, too. And I think, jack, that you’re the answer to that. But I did manage to get his number in milan. I want this broached to him as gently as possible. I’m just not sure what that means now.

Jack: It means you let me contact him first.

Phyllis: I’m gonna back off, just so you know, because i don’t want to watch you jerk jack around again.

Diane: It’s obvious how much you care about jack.

Phyllis: Oh, and by the way, I really care about your son, kyle, too.

Diane: Oh, yes. Your lovely daughter’s husband. I was touched when I read about their marriage. You know, jack, I remember a moment with kyle and summer many years ago. It was, uh, christmastime, I think. They were just so adorable with each other. Who would have guessed that they would have fallen in love and even raise a child together?

[ Chuckles ] We’re grandparents, jack. Isn’t that wonderful?

Jack: No. We are nothing. You gave up that right when you walked away from your son.

Diane: And I have missed so many special moments. So many holidays and milestones. But, phyllis, I am very happy for the joy that our kids share.

Phyllis: That’s so nice.

Diane: And, you know, you’re doing really well, too. I’ve — I’ve read about your success in genoa city.

Phyllis: Oh, have you?

Diane: Mm.

Phyllis: Oh, that’s lovely. I’m doing great. I’m flourishing. You know, no toxicity in my life. I’ve learned from my mistakes and realized how my actions affect other people. I’m doing so great. I have a certain level of maturity now, um… probably something you can’t relate to.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] It makes sense for you to doubt me. For both of you to think I’m not being sincere. It’s part of the reason I didn’t reach out earlier. Fear of how people would react. And to be honest, I’m — I’m still scared. But kyle is worth taking risks for.

Jack: Sending anonymous texts is hardly the height of bravery.

Diane: But how else would you have known about allie? This incredible young woman. She’s a part of your son. She’s part of you. Those texts were meant as a gesture of goodwill. But bringing you and allie together hasn’t created even one spark of forgiveness in you. The man who cherishes family above all.

[ Sighs ] I expected more from you, jack. Maybe we both have changed.

Ever notice how stiff clothes can feel rough on your skin?

Billy: Uh, what do you mean, you looked into her?

Ashley: I didn’t do a deep dive into her past or anything, billy, just your basic internet search. And I did not find anything alarming. Allie is a graduate student, and she’s getting her advanced degree in chemical engineering.

Billy: Okay, well, there you go. Allie’s interested in chemistry, like her dad.

Traci: And like her great-aunt. It must be in the genes.

Ashley: Right. And I’m sure jack knows what she’s studying and has probably made the same connection that we’ve made.

Billy: You say that like it’s a bad thing.

Ashley: I know what it must mean to him to have a granddaughter that’s following in his son’s footsteps, and i can pretty much predict what his next move will be.

Traci: He will offer her a position at jabot.

Ashley: Absolutely. Maybe not right away, but when the time is right. And, look, maybe she’s very intelligent and talented and would make a great addition to the company. And maybe she’s taking advantage of jack’s position and the relationship she has with him. I don’t know. I’d hate that. I mean, he’s already referring to her as family.

Traci: Because she is family.

Ashley: But, traci, she’s also a stranger. We don’t know what her motivations are.

Billy: There’s a part of this I agree with ashley. I mean, there are people in this world that will not hesitate to play on your emotions, especially when you’re personally invested. They’ll do what they can to get what they want.

Jack: There is no forgiveness, diane. That isn’t the issue. It never will be. You weren’t there when kyle cried about the loss of his mother. I was. I held him while he sobbed. The kind of tears that tear a parent’s heart apart.

Diane: I want to make up for that.

Jack: Then you don’t understand kyle and you don’t understand grief if you think a wound like that can suddenly heal completely. The minute kyle knows you’re alive, he will know he grieved for nothing!

Diane: Well, maybe I can’t fix what I broke, but I owe it to kyle to try. Jack, your help would mean the world to me.

Phyllis: Okay, okay, let’s stop all of this. Diane, we all know that jack is the only one who can smooth the way for you.

Diane: You’re probably right.

Phyllis: I am right. So, enough with the threats about going to kyle.

Diane: It wasn’t meant as a threat.

Jack: Good.

Diane: Obviously working with jack on this is ideal.

Jack: Good. And stay away from allie, as well.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Jack: That is non-negotiable. That young woman just lost her father. You’ve made her life quite complicated enough. At this point, I wouldn’t blame her if she wanted nothing to do with me or the abbotts.

Diane: No matter what allie says, you know she exists. Because of me. You have a chance that you didn’t have with keemo. The same chance that I would love to have with kyle.

Phyllis: Um, okay, so, now you’re using the death of jack’s son, uh, as emotional blackmail? Is that what you’re doing?

Diane: [ Sighs ]

Jack: I am grateful to know about keemo and allie. For that… I will let kyle know that you are alive.

Diane: Thank you.

Jack: But he will be surrounded by people who have always been there for him. And listen to me. If he doesn’t want you in his life, you leave him alone. You turn around and you walk away.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] But isn’t that what you did with keemo? He turned his back on you, and you let him. Was that the right decision, jack?

Phyllis: Alright. Let’s go. We gotta go. We gotta go. Enough. Enough.

Diane: Thank you, phyllis, for getting through to jack.

Phyllis: Sure. Mm.

Diane: Is it clear how much you care about him. I hope it works out for you two this time.

Phyllis: Alright. Let’s go. It’s time to go.

[ Door slams ]

Diane: [ Sighs heavily ] (Ice t) there is no perfect, only practice.

Traci: Wait a minute. What happened to not rushing to judgment where allie is concerned?

Billy: I’m not rushing to judgment. I’m really not. I’m just saying that I think that we should keep an eye on this because, look, we know jack, alright? He has a tendency to see things through rose-colored glasses.

Traci: But what if his granddaughter is this nice, normal person?

Billy: Well, then, that’ll be great. But we don’t know yet. And to be honest, I feel for her a little bit, okay? She’s on her own. She’s grieving her father. She’s dealing with the bombshell of finding out that she’s an abbott. And she has no idea what that means. And maybe I sympathize with her because I kind of get it. You know, I was late to the party, late to the abbott family table. And I had a different mother, and that had its challenges.

Traci: You know, whatever our issues were with jill, we always loved you.

Billy: I know that. I do. And I love you both. But there’s another aspect to this. I didn’t get a lot of time with our father, okay? And it’s not always easy feeling like the outsider looking in.

Traci: Which is why I really believe that if jack can make an authentic bond with allie, maybe it would be healing. For both of them.

Billy: I mean, that would be the best-case scenario, right? I really hope that jack builds a connection with allie because — because he deserves it.

Phyllis: Diane’s alive. She’s alive. You told me. I believed you. But — she’s alive.

Jack: Actually seeing her in person kind of boggles the mind, doesn’t it?

Phyllis: Yeah. Nothing about her has changed. Nothing. Sh’s just better at hiding things.

Jack: You still think i should tell kyle?

Phyllis: Absolutely. Before she gets to him.

Jack: It goes against everything inside of me to set kyle up this kind of pain. This is gonna change him forever. And I’m partly to blame.

Diane: Jack, why are you acting like this? I’m offering you an alternative.

Jack: No, no, no, no. We’re about to light into a custody battle and you’re getting a little nervous. And I don’t blame you. But if you’re expecting me to buy this “kinder, gentler” diane jenkins, think again.

Diane: You are so determined to see the worst in me.

Jack: It’s called “learning from experience,” diane.

Diane: Don’t you care about this boy at all?

Jack: Goodbye.

Diane: You know what? Watching the two of you together makes me realize how important it is for a child to have a father.

Jack: You think I need to be reminded of that?

Diane: N-no, but apparently you need to be reminded how important a mother is to a child. Look, by going after full custody, you are forcing the judge to choose between you and me. And no matter what she decides, that little boy is going to lose. He will be deprived of a substantial relationship with one of us. And something like that can leave very deep, permanent scars on a child. Is that what you want for your son, jack?

Diane: And he’s got those big, beautiful blue eyes. They just break your heart, don’t they?

Jack: Yeah, they do.

Diane: Yeah.

Jack: Yes, they do.

Diane: You know, I keep thinking about ashley.

Jack: It’s quite a miracle, isn’t it?

Diane: It reminds you how precious every little minute is.

Jack: Mm.

Diane: Yeah. [ Smooches ] That’s why I’m so glad that you’ve had this time with kyle. You’re making memories that will last forever. Look at you. Hey, sweetie.

Phyllis: Jack, you’re not doing anything to kyle. Except maybe preparing him for the shock of his life.

Jack: My head has been spinning since the second i found out that the texter was diane. What this would mean for kyle. What led up to this? How did we ever get into this chaos that led to her death? How I could have stopped it?

Phyllis: You couldn’t have done anything to stop it. Anything. She was all about control. She used begging, what, uh, bribery, threats, seduction.

Jack: She came to me for help. Money.

Phyllis: Money. Okay. Well, she would have taken your money and then taken kyle.

Jack: I never even heard her out.

Phyllis: Who cares?! She was a woman on the edge!

[ Sighs ] Even if she didn’t fake her own death, I’m sure she would have gone to prison. And then kyle would have had to deal with that.

Jack: At least he would have known she was alive.

Phyllis: Jack, listen. You know and I know that all diane did was use kyle as a pawn to get what she wanted and who she wanted. But now kyle is an adult. And he can make his own decision whether he wants his mom back in his life.

Jack: This is gonna change everything he ever felt about his mother.

Phyllis: Well, yeah. Maybe he’ll just be relieved that she’s alive.

Jack: Yeah. I know he still loves her. I have no doubt in my mind. But he loves the mother we let him remember. This woman is different. This is a woman who would willingly walk away from her son.

Phyllis: Oh, okay. So, when dina came back into your life, you let her back in. It took time and effort, but —

Jack: And anger and resentment and trying to keep her at a distance while we tried to get her approv–

Phyllis: Okay. But you were grateful for your time together, is what you’re saying, right?

Jack: This is different. Dina was well. Dina was healthy when she walked away from us. I hated it, yes, but… it is what it is. It — what diane did was different. Kyle grew up thinking his mother was murdered. That could break a child for life. And that was a risk she was willing to take.

Phyllis: You know how you get past it? You know how? With love and support. There’s no other choice.

Jack: [ Sighs ] Find your beat

Diane: Things between jack, kyle, and me weren’t always so painful. Clearly.

Allie: [ Chuckles ] That’s kyle? He’s adorable.

Diane: Yeah. And now he’s so handsome.

Allie: I didn’t think I’d come. Jack obviously doesn’t want me anywhere near you.

Diane: He told me to never contact you again.

Allie: Which I understand his instinct. When you started talking about death and murder —

Diane: Of course you were horrified.

Allie: But one thing stood out to me. You’re doing all this to be with your son again.

Diane: I failed him. I should have healed myself so i could look after him sooner. But at the time, I just wasn’t capable of that. And I-I can’t go back in time, but I can move forward. You know, speak to him, at least. To see his face would be magical. And if I had the chance to hold him again…

Allie: You love him that much. That was me and my dad.

Diane: I’m really sorry you lost your father, allie. And your mother? Do the two of you speak? You know, from the moment I met you, I could see a sadness in you. I know how that feels. I have been utterly alone for so long. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I mean, whatever happened between you and your mother, is there really no way —

Allie: Tell me about kyle. And jack and the rest of the family. That’s what I came here to ask.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, you could ask jack.

Allie: But I want to hear it from you. An outsider.

Diane: Okay. I will, uh, start with telling you about my amazing son, kyle.

[ Sighs ] Well, the first thing you should know is that, um, jack never expected to be the father of my child.

Allie: Wait, so, the pregnancy wasn’t planned?

Diane: Well, it was. By me. Kyle was conceived by artificial insemination.

Allie: But surely that required jack’s involvement.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Well, the original intention was for another man to be the father, but there was a mishap and the wrong sample was used. And after kyle was born, i discovered his true paternity and jack learned he was kyle’s father.

Allie: You do know that sounds crazy, right?

Diane: It was. All I can say is that kyle was deeply wanted. My son meant everything to me. That’s never changed, and it never will.

Jack: How do I do this? How — how do — how do I do it without setting off alarms? I can’t do it over the phone. I have to tell him in person.

Phyllis: That’s a good idea. Yeah. Definitely. Tell him in person. Um…I’ll go with you. I’ll go on the flight. Um, I don’t have to be there when you tell kyle. Unless you want me there. And then, you know, summer and i can support.

Jack: I hate the idea of leaving the country while diane is wandering around. Which means kyle and summer have to come back home.

Phyllis: Yeah. They should. They should come back home. That’s a good idea. Hey. No one is better at getting their child through something like this than you.

Jack: It’s all happening so fast. I just found out myself. And diane’s on a mission. She already has kyle’s number in milan. I just need time. And kyle deserves time before his life is turned inside out.

[ Sighs ]

Ashley: I still have mixed feelings about it. I mean, clearly I understand that you think it’s a good idea for jack to go to los angeles and pursue a relationship with allie. But even if my concerns are unfounded, it doesn’t mean this whole situation is risk-free. There’s nothing guaranteed about this, you know.

Traci: What are you thinking?

Ashley: Well, I’m thinking that maybe allie would reject jack, just the way keemo did, and then he’ll have suffer through that all over again. I’m sorry. This is where my mind goes, okay? I have these questions. Maybe I’m a tad cynical or a tad overprotective. I don’t know.

Billy: Yeah, just a tad.

Ashley: Oh, okay. I hope it works out the way you envision it. I really do. I hope that jack finds some peace where’s keemo concerned, and I hope that he has a long-lasting, loving relationship with his granddaughter. And just so you know, I did talk to phyllis about it, and she doesn’t see allie as any kind of threat whatsoever.

Traci: Well, whatever our misgivings about phyllis, i guess there’s one thing we can say — she’s savvy and she cares deeply for jack. You know, she — she would not hold back if she felt like his emotional well-being was at risk.

Billy: Yes, but, uh, she’s phyllis. So I think we should be a little bit worried that she’s this involved.

Traci: I don’t know. Maybe not this time. This time, she’s consistently put jack’s feelings first. You know, she’s been supportive and encouraging, the perfect friend. And I happen to know that jack feels the same way.

Ashley: Okay, back up a second. Are they friends?

Traci: [ Laughs ]

Ashley: Are they something more? Is it something in between? I’m just trying to figure out if there’s anything real to this, you know? Or are they just gonna do this dance for the rest of their lives?

Traci: I have absolutely no idea.

Billy: And I am not trying to figure it out. I think we all just want jack to be happy.

Traci: We all do just want jack to be happy. And I have this feeling that he’s on the road to that right now. I know I have a tendency to romanticize things.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Traci: Writer’s superpower. But do you guys remember when he found that necklace of mother’s? The teardrop of love? You know, and there was a legend, and it said that whoever had the necklace would find true. And what if the necklace’s powers are starting to work? Maybe jack can have both. Maybe he can have a relationship with phyllis and a connection with his granddaughter. I mean, what if this is jack’s moment?

Phyllis: So, if you want to wait to contact kyle, you know, we’ll just wait.

Jack: No, no, no, no. You said it yourself — she’s a loose cannon. She could just show up in milan out of nowhere.

Phyllis: Yeah. I know you got this, but just know, whatever I can do for you —

Jack: No. You’ve — you’ve already done it. Have I even thanked you for coming all the way out here without my even asking you to?

Phyllis: It’s what friends do for each other. Are you gonna call kyle?

Jack: Yeah. I’m going to lure him to genoa city for some family time. More subterfuge. Just like diane and her damn anonymous texts.

Phyllis: Well, it’s completely different, jack.

Jack: Yeah, I don’t know about that.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Kyle was so easy to love. Just like his father. But as you can imagine, starting a family that way wasn’t the easiest path.

Phyllis: Do I have your attention? Do I?

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Good. I’m gonna make this simple. Get out of town. Now. Or you’ll regret it.

Diane: Without my child?

Phyllis: No. Take your kid with you. Where is he?

Diane: He’s not here. He’s safe with his nanny. So you won’t be able to get your dirty hands on him.

Phyllis: I have no idea what you’re babbling about. But I don’t want to see you or your son ever again. Do you understand me?

Diane: Oh, right. You’re trying to steal him away from me — you and jack.

Phyllis: What? Ugh. Listen, I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about, but you listen to me. You’re after jack, and you always have been. Now you’re using your son as bait. Jack may have fallen for it, but I haven’T. So, if you want him, you have to go through me.

Diane: You know, phyllis, i really don’t understand why you’re looking at me like that.

Phyllis: Oh, I think you do.

Diane: No, I don’T. The rest of the abbott family has come to terms with my being here. Haven’t you? I mean, after all, you’re mrs. Jack abbott… at least for the moment.

Diane: You have to admit, it makes perfect sense. Jack wants to be with his son, and I want to allow him to be with his son.

Phyllis: Yeah, and you want to worm your way back into his life.

Diane: I’m already a part of his life. Thanks to kyle.

Phyllis: Thanks to kyle. Listen, I know your agenda. I know what you’re up to. And your agenda goes far beyond helping jack bond with his son. This supposed time limit — one month — give me a break.

Diane: Yeah, that’s when that glow by jabot thing starts. No more pool house.

Phyllis: You know, you think you have the upper hand just because you’ve parked yourself and your little tyke in the middle of us —

Diane: You know, phyllis, you’re really starting to grate my nerves. Is there a point to this?

Phyllis: Yes, there is a point. Let me tell you. You bett find a job right away, or else.

Diane: Why is that?

Phyllis: Because you’re on my turf now.

Diane: Oh, well, for the moment it’s your turf. Don’t forget. I used to live here, too, back when jack and I were engaged. In fact, we shared the very same bedroom. I bet it hasn’t changed a bit. Same sheets and everything.

Jack: Nothing more peaceful than watching a baby sleep.

Diane: Mm. I’ve heard mothers say that’s true even when the kids are teenagers.

Jack: Incredible.

Diane: Yeah. And we have all that to look forward to with kyle.

Jack: Yeah.

Diane: Well, I’m thinking of taking that swim. Can I entice you to join me?

Phyllis: Hey! Did someone mention a swim? I have first dibs.

Diane: [ Gasps ] Phyllis! There are children in this house!

Phyllis: Yes, there are children in this house, and I’m naked. You want to join me, baby?

Jack: Excuse us, diane.

Phyllis: Yes, excuse us, diane.

Diane: By all means.

Phyllis: Oh! Oh, it’s great! Come on!

Jack: It’s a little —

Phyllis: Come on, jack!

Jack: Hold up! Ah!

Phyllis: Get in here, quick!

Diane: Once I was out of the picture, there was a lot less tension surrounding kyle. He grew up with cousins and aunts and a family that adored him. You know, the abbotts don’t let just anyone in. But once they do, they will love and protect you forever. You’re really lucky, allie. I can’t expect love from anyone involved. The most I can hope for is a little understanding or forgiveness. But know I have to try, no matter what happens in the end.

Billy: Ooh, I love you. She has a way of making things sound like they’re gonna end up the way that they should.

Ashley: That’s true. It’s a gift. You’ve got a gift. And my gift to both of you is that I will keep my feelings about phyllis to myself.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Ashley: I mean, after all, we do know who phyllis is, right, for better or worse. Cannot say the same thing about allie, however.

Traci: Okay. Allie’s part in our story is yet to be determined. That’s for sure. But I think I’m going to let jack take the lead on this. I’m putting my faith in jack. And I hope very much that the two of you can do the same. Well?

Billy: Hey, I think it’s the least we could do.

Ashley: Okay. I’ll respect whatever decision jack makes.

Traci: Even if he decides to forge a relationship with allie?

Ashley: Yes. I will keep an open mind and give allie a chance.

Jack: Well, kyle is coming to genoa city with harrison. Unfortunately, summer couldn’t get away from marchetti.

Phyllis: Oh. Yeah. Sure. Well, how soon will they be here?

Jack: I don’t know. They’re still working out the details, but at least I can tell diane something’s in the works, and hopefully that will keep her from doing anything drastic.

Phyllis: Hey, let’s not talk about diane anymore. Let’s not talk about her. Let’s talk about allie. You know what? She does, in fact, have that twinkle in her eyes.

Jack: You saw that, huh?

Phyllis: Yes. She’s very intelligent, obviously.

Jack: And obviously you’re trying to distract me.

Phyllis: Yes, I am. Is it working?

Jack: She is lovely. And smart. You can watch how her brain works.

Phyllis: Mm.

Jack: She obviously feels things very deeply.

Phyllis: Just like an abbott. Tell me more.

Diane: Was that too much information?

Allie: [ Chuckles ] It will take me a minute to process, but I’ll get there.

Diane: Thank you for understanding how much kyle means to me. He’s the biggest part of my heart. And I have ached for him every day since I left.

Allie: What exactly do you hope will happen if you do see kyle, face-to-face?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about that. Little daydreams that I have. I try to keep the hopes small so as not to tempt fate.

Allie: And what are the hopes if you dream bigger?

Diane: Then I’m his mother again. In every way. I — I’m part of his life. Part of his days. I dote on his child. We have sunday breakfast in the abbott dining room.

Allie: And everyone accepts you being there.

Diane: The family you’re part of is big and loving when they let you in. And there is no place better in the world. You’ll see. It’ll happen.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: I don’t understand. How long are we talking?

[ Door closes ] Really? Well, that seems excessive.

Ashland: What’s going on?

Victoria: Uh, hold on one second. Our flight to tuscany has been delayed.

Ashland: It’s a private jet. How can it be delayed?

Victoria: Weather. There are storms in the flight path.

Ashland: Well, why don’t we just fly around them?

Victoria: I don’t know. Something about barometric pressure. I’m talking to the pilot right now.

Ashland: Let me talk to him. Yeah, tell me about this weather thing. Well, how long will it take to re-route then?

[ Scoffs ] Wait. You’re saying that storms are coming in from both the east and the west? I didn’t even know that was possible.

Victoria: I didn’t either.

Ashland: Well, he’s claiming it’s some kind of meteorological anomaly. What do you want to do? Should we press him and just have him take off anyway?

Victoria: He’s the expert. I think we need to trust him.

Ashland: Right. Uh, listen, um, we appreciate your concern, but we would really like to get to italy as quickly as possible. Sure. Thank you very much. We will await your call. Yeah.

Victoria: So? How long do we have to wait?

Ashland: He assured me that he will get in touch with us as soon as it’s safe to fly. So, for now, we wait.

Nikki: I don’t know how you can be so calm.

[ Door closes ] Knowing that victoria is leaving for tuscany with ashland any minute, I’m a nervous wreck.

Victor: Wait a minute. You’re the one who has been assuring me that victoria knows how to handle herself.

Nikki: I know. I know. I’ve been trying to remind myself of the same thing. But the thought of her traveling alone with that man after everything he has done — I’m worried.

Victor: Trust me. It’ll all work out. She has a plan, okay?

Nikki: Yes, I know about the plan, but for her to pretend that she still believes him and still loves him — a whole lot could go wrong with that ruse.

Victor: Sweetheart, if it makes you feel any better, they won’t leave for any time soon, okay? Ostensibly, there’s some kind of a storm in the area.

Nikki: What do you mean, “ostensibly”?

Victor: Well, there’s a storm somewhere, right? That’s what I told the pilot to tell them.

Sally: Thank you. What a gentleman. Opening the door for me, pulling out my chair. You really know how to make a girl feel special. Are you gonna make me breakfast in bed in the morning?

Adam: Oh, wait. Slow down, now. We’re just, uh, having a drink.

Sally: Yeah, a very special drink. A very special night. You are now in charge of newman/locke.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sally: Are you gonna tell me all about your plans for the company now?

Adam: Oh, well, if you let me, I will talk to you about them all night.

Sally: How can you have so many? Your father just put you in charge this afternoon.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] I’ve run the company before. Successfully.

Sally: Well, I imagine that after victor named victoria ceo and installed you at newman media, you’ve probably kept an eye on every move that your sister made and compared it to what you would have done in her place.

Adam: It’s a little unnerving how well you read me, but it is, uh, very impressive.

Sally: It’s not that hard. We have similar very mind-sets. When I ran my business back in L.A., I always kept an eye on the competition. It got to the point where i could have run their companies way better than they could.

Adam: Well, now you’re about to run one big entity. Newman media.

Sally: Did that really happen? You really offered me a job?

Adam: Oh, yes. That happened.

Sally: And you meant it?

Adam: Of course. What did you think?

Sally: It just hasn’t sunk in yet. I am running newman media.

Adam: Now, I-I don’t know how long you will be in charge, but —

Sally: It doesn’t matter. I just appreciate you having that kind of faith in me. It’s been a really long time.

Jack: You ran away. You didn’t take responsibility. You didn’t face the people that you abused.

Diane: Everybody wanted me gone, jack. I mean, I was truly hated, and — and, in time, I hated myself. I mean, all the self-loathing and — and the guilt and the shame. And [Exhales sharply] I thought, “why not? You know, the whole world thinks you’re dead. Why don’t you just give them what they want?” Kyle is my son.

Jack: He has built a wonderful life with his family. You think I’m gonna let you destroy that? Poison his life in italy? No. Never. So you go back to your new and improved life. I’ll go back to genoa city and forget this ever happened.

Diane: But you won’T. You can’T. That’s not the man you are, jack. You love kyle with your whole heart. And half of him is me.

Jack: His mother died. She was killed. He was lost, confused. Heartbroken. He had his mother ripped from his life. I know this because I was there. I held him. I tried to comfort him by telling him it wouldn’t always hurt so much, that I would always be there to protect him. Why would I stop doing that now?!

Diane: Our son needs me in his life. He deserves his mother.

Jack: A real mother. Not you. And you sure as hell don’t deserve him.

Jack: [ Breathes deeply ]

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Phyllis: Jack.

Jack: What are you — what are you doing here?

Phyllis: I didn’t want to press you on the phone. So I came here instead.

Jack: Well, I’m glad you did. In 15 years you drink about 15,000 cups of coffee.

Adam: To us. In charge. Finally.

[ Glasses clink ]

Sally: I feel like you’re jinxing it.

Adam: What do you mean?

Sally: You said that ashland wasn’t too thrilled about victor’s decision to put you in charge. And even though you said she didn’t have much of a reaction, I’m sure victoria is not thrilled about it, either. I don’t know. It just feels like they could throw a wrench in it whenever they wanted.

Adam: I really don’t think you need to worry about that.

Sally: What happens if she runs off to daddy to complain?

Adam: My father already knows that she hates the idea of me sitting in that chair while she’s gone. And, honestly, that might be why he put me there — to provoke her into staying in town. But it didn’t work. That’s how determined she is to go along with this plan and get him out of her life. She’s willing to let me run the company. Her least favorite person.

Sally: Ashland is probably her least favorite at the moment. Finding out the person who professes to love you has been manipulating you and playing on your sympathies is the ultimate betrayal. I really don’t know how she’s even holding in all that emotion.

Adam: I don’t know, but she can’t do it forever. And she’s not gonna be able to keep up the charade. Ashland will catch on soon. He’s a smart and perceptive guy.

Sally: He’s also a very vindictive guy. What happens when he finds out his wife has been playing him?

Ashland: You know, I still have trouble believing that victor was okay with putting adam in charge. He’s so toxic. This might a good time for you to convince your father to change his mind, huh?

Victoria: No. Look, I’ve told you this. I’m not happy about adam being put in charge in our absence, but I like to choose my own battles, and this is not a fight that I want to focus too much of my energy on.

Ashland: Right. It’s just that, victor could keep adam in check, but now that victor’s no longer an ally, adam is free to run amuck.

Victoria: Have you talked to adam recently?

Ashland: Yeah. Very recently. Let’s just say he made it clear that we should not stay in tuscany for too long. The more time we give him, the better the chance he’ll turn the company upside down.

Victoria: I think that this problem will be fixed once we clear your name. And then my family will have to apologize to you for thinking the worst of you. And that should be our main priority right now. Don’t you think?

Ashland: [ Sighs ] You’re right. Of course you’re right.

[ Laughs ] First things first. And then everything else will fall into place. Thank you.

Victoria: For what?

Ashland: For reminding me to stay focused on what’s important.

Phyllis: What’s wrong?

Jack: Wow, you’re getting right to it, huh?

Phyllis: Yeah, well, okay. I had a nice flight. Uh, traci’s worried. Um… uh, let’s see. I ordered some shoes. Why were you so strange on the phone?

Jack: I don’t suppose you’d buy that it’s just jet lag?

Phyllis: Well, I thought it had to do with allie. Maybe she got cold feet, i thought, but then you said you were connecting with her.

Jack: No, no, no. Things are great with allie. She’s lovely. She’s a very serious young woman. She’s very focused and determined. But she has this twinkle in her eye when she laughs.

Phyllis: That’s lovely. I know where she gets that. Jack… why were you dodging on the phone? Come on. I was worried. I talked to lauren about it. She backed me. Here I am.

Jack: I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you know me so well.

Phyllis: So something is wrong. What is it?

Jack: It’s shocking. Frankly, it’s turned everything upside down. And, yes, my first instinct was to keep it to myself. But seeing you here now… I know I can’t handle this on my own. I have to share the insanity with someone. And I trust no one more than you. Hi, I’m karen.

Nikki: Well, I’m glad you came up with a way to keep victoria and ashland from leaving right away, but eventually they’re going to realize there is no storm.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Thank you, my sweet love.

Nikki: You’re welcome.

Victor: It was a stalling tactic. I have to give michael baldwin enough time to look at ashland locke’s contract line by line and find some clause that allows us to throw that bastard out on his ear.

Nikki: Oh, I would love for him to find a loophole, anything to get that man out of our lives.

Victor: Wait a minute. I remember not too long ago you were hoping that all the allegations against him were false.

Nikki: Yeah, well, I have no illusions about him now. I’ve seen who really he is. To have michael held captive in a foreign country — how can he do that to someone?

Victor: It was an act of desperation. He’ll do anything to hide what he is all about and what he has done, but he’s not gonna get away with it.

Nikki: [ Scoffs ] Well, I’ll believe that when i see it. He has never had to suffer any consequences for his crimes.

Victor: How long have you known me? Do you think I’m gonna let that bastard get away with it? Do you think I allow someone to cross me like that?

Adam: Look, I would not concern myself with victoria’s well-being. She’s her father’s daughter, and she knows how to take care of herself. If anything, we should be worried about ashland’s safety.

Sally: You think she’s gonna, like, push him out of the plane on the way to italy?

Adam: Oh, she would probably have an ejection seat installed with a little red button she could press.

Sally: Well, I guess that would be more efficient.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] No. I’m kidding. She, um, did not divulge what her plan is, so there’s no telling what she’s up to. But if I had to bet, I would put my money on her to come out on top.

Sally: That surprises me, knowing how you feel about her.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Look, my sister and I — we might not always see eye to eye. But she’s a formidable opponent. She’s tenacious and resourceful and smart.

Sally: It almost sounds like you’re rooting for her.

Adam: No, I just know better than to underestimate her.

Sally: Yeah, there may be some truth to that, but maybe it is in your best interest if she wins this battle.

Adam: What do you mean?

Sally: Well, if she can’t get rid of ashland, then he’s gonna try and take newman/locke away from all of you.

Victoria: Where did you see adam?

Ashland: His office.

Victoria: Oh. So he was one of the loose ends that you needed to tie up before we left.

Ashland: Yeah. Yeah. I just wanted to remind him that he was babysitting the company, not taking it over. His response, of course, was, predictably, insolence. I mean, he even had the nerve to “congratulate” me for pulling the wool over your eyes. Can you believe that?

Victoria: Yeah. I believe it.

Ashland: Yeah, he said he was impressed that I was able to pull it off. It was insulting. It was offensive, even.

Victoria: I guess it just goes to show you that adam hasn’t really turned over a new leaf the way that he wants everyone to believe. Oh, my gosh.

Ashland: What?

Victoria: What if the answer that we’ve been looking for has been staring us right in the face the entire time?

Phyllis: Okay, that’s quite a build-up. Lay it on me. I’m ready for it.

Jack: It’s about our mystery texter.

Phyllis: Of course. Ah. Of course. Did you find out who it was?

Jack: More like they found me.

Phyllis: Who was it?

Jack: This is where the insanity kicks in. Phyllis, the woman is diane.

Phyllis: Diane who?

Jack: Diane jenkins.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? Diane’s dead. She’s burning in hell.

Jack: I’m not kidding.

Phyllis: [ Stammers ] So, it’s someone impersonating diane.

Jack: No, no, no.

Phyllis: Why would they do that?

Jack: Diane is alive.

Phyllis: Why are you saying this to me?

Jack: Because I saw her. I talked to her. Yes, it is diane.

Phyllis: Diane is dead. Diane died on the bridge or in the water, but diane is dead.

Jack: It was all —

Phyllis: They pulled out her body.

Jack: It was all —

Phyllis: There was a service.

Jack: Listen to me! It was all a lie.

Phyllis: Come here. Come here. Jack, give me your hand. Hey, I know you’re stressed out. I know that. I’m not saying you’re losing it. I’m not saying that. But diane is very much dead. I was one of the many suspects. There were charges filed. She is dead.

Phyllis: Oh, my god. No. Oh, my god. No.

Jack: She slipped out of her life in genoa city and into her new life here in L.A.

Phyllis: She’s sending the texts. It is diane? Why is she doing this? To what end? Why did she come out of hiding now?

Jack: Because she wants something.

Phyllis: What does she want? Money? How much?

Jack: No. She wants a trade. According to her, she led me to allie, and now it’s only fair that I lead her back into kyle’s life. I brought in ensure max protein,

Adam: Intuitively, it would seem like it’s in my best interests for victoria to stay away a long time because I’m in charge while she’s gone. Then if she fails, we could all lose. You’re taking the long view.

Sally: I-I just know if ashland has the opportunity, he will take over. So maybe it is in our best interest to root for victoria to send him packing.

Adam: Eh, of course. It doesn’t actually need to be victoria that kicks locke out. But my father is giving her a chance to make things right. But make no mistake. He’s not gonna be shy about stepping in to do what’s necessary.

Sally: Well, that scenario is probably best for you because then the company stays intact — with you in charge — victoria gets knocked off her pedestal, and she’s gonna have to admit how badly she screwed up.

Adam: Oh, well, that part is inevitable. I mean, even if everything goes perfect for her — she divorces locke, she kicks him out of the co-ceo position — she is still left cleaning up her mess. All of this is her fault for falling for his scheme in the first place.

Sally: I heard you tell your dad that. He didn’t really seem to be on board.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You don’t understand him the way that I do. He will always defend victoria, especially in front of somebody that is not family. Sure, he sympathizes with her, he wants to protect her, but make no mistake, he is disappointed with her. She let him down. That is the greatest sin one of his children can commit.

Nikki: Victor, of course i know you will do whatever it takes to protect the family. And the business.

[ Sighs ] I just hate that we’re in this situation at all.

Victor: As do I.

Nikki: I mean, and I knew that ashland’s reputation was horrible. I just didn’t realize what what he was truly capable of.

Victor: That’s the problem, my darling. I had my suspicions about that man from the very beginning. I actually confronted him, asked him point-blank if he was faking his illness to garner our daughter’s sympathy.

Nikki: I remember. He denied it.

Victor: Of course he denied it. He’d do anything to hide what he had done and what he is all about. And I didn’t interfere anymore because I realized that victoria was happy, as happy as I’ve ever seen her. I was hoping this marriage would work out.

[ Sighs ]

Nikki: Well, I hope you’re not blaming victoria for what& happened. This was a well-orchestrated con by a master.

Victor: Well, if you’re asking me if my opinion of victoria’s judgment has changed… I can’t tell you that.

Nikki: Well, that’s not very fair. We all supported their marriage. We all believed that ashland loved her. I mean, we can’t now turn around and act like she’s the only one who should have seen that.

Victor: Sweetheart, I don’t think we should talk about this anymore.

Nikki: Yes, victor, we absolutely have to talk about it.

Ashland: I’m sorry. I’m not following. What is this revelation you just had?

Victoria: Well, I may be off, but we’ve been going around and around trying to figure out who might have framed you. We’ve gone through your past —

Ashland: Yeah, and we haven’t found anybody yet who could have been responsible for this.

Victoria: Exactly and we’ve even tossed out the idea that my dad might be behind it, but that doesn’t make any sense to me because if he wanted you out, he would have come at you with a bold power move. This scam was sneaky, like a snake.

Ashland: Adam.

Victoria: It clicked when you told me that he said he admired you for pulling off such a huge scam. And then I thought, “of course he would say that — because this is what he would do.” And then it hit me. This is exactly what he would do, and he’s done so before. He once even pulled off his own medical scam. He pretended to be blind.

Ashland: Why?

Victoria: Because he’s deceitful and narcissistic and power-hungry. And if he saw the opportunity to take you down and advance himself, he wouldn’t think twice about it. Do you think that maybe adam might be the one who framed you?

Phyllis: So diane is bargaining with you? Your granddaughter for your son? Oh, my god, this is exactly something that she would do.

Jack: I know. The whole thing is surreal. Once the shock faded, the anger kicked in. And poor allie — she — she’s stuck in the middle like a chess piece.

Phyllis: So, diane been here hiding the whole time? And she knew your granddaughter?

Jack: I don’t know any of the logistics, what she knew, when she knew, how she knew it. All I know is I stood in the home that keemo lived in and listened to her tell me about the past and how she’d changed. And how, after everything she did to kyle, she wanted back in his life again.

Phyllis: What’d you say?

Jack: I told her the only thing I could say. No way. I told her I intend to forget she exists. She was dead to kyle before. She can be dead to him now. I will not let her break his heart again.

Phyllis: Okay.

Jack: What does that mean?

Phyllis: It means… you don’t want to hear what i have to say.

Nikki: Of course victoria made a mistake in trusting ashland, but that certainly doesn’t diminish her accomplishments at newman.

Victor: No, baby. She is running the company very well. I’ve told her that many times.

Nikki: Well, then why are you making her think that you’ve lost faith in her abilities?

Victor: In what way am i doing that?

Nikki: Victor, you know exactly what I mean. You appointed adam to be in charge of the company while she sorted out through crisis. That was a warning that you might have her replaced as ceo.

Victor: Sweetheart, that’s a temporary solution, okay? Our daughter’s off to italy. I don’t know what her plans are. We have a huge company to run. So I thought putting adam in the position of temporary ceo was a good decision.

Nikki: Yeah, but I’m coo. If you wanted a temporary plan, I’m the logical choice.

Victor: Sweetheart, it doesn’t have the same impact.

Nikki: Exactly. You were sending her a message. And now she may be putting her life at risk because she can sense your judgment and your disappointment. She will do anything to earn back your respect. It breaks my heart, victor, because right now she should just know that her family will stand by her, no matter what. Can you please tell me that you’ll do that?

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ]

Victoria: Well, what do you think? You think that the idea that adam may have framed you — you think it’s totally crazy?

Ashland: It’s not something I’ve ever considered.

Victoria: I just keep seeing his face light up when dad told him that he was gonna be temporarily in charge. He was thrilled. Well, maybe that was his goal from the very beginning — to make dad lose faith in you and me and that would clear the way for him to be in charge.

Ashland: Yeah, but these — these accusations against me — they’re horrific. Do we really think that adam is that devious? That vicious?

Victoria: That is child’s play for him.

Ashland: But he’s trying to destroy a man’s reputation, his marriage, his c– and for what? To satisfy his own ambitions? That’s what you’re saying?

Victoria: Think about what he had to do to get that story published about your past. He had to hack into chanccomm servers. And, yes, I know, sure, adam claims he did that to discredit billy, but it made you look bad, too, didn’t it? Maybe he could do that elsewhere, try to make you look guilty.

Ashland: Maybe.

Victoria: Just think about it. He could have the one to remove or replace those medical records at the hospital. Maybe it was adam who bribed those doctors in peru. Maybe he’s the one who figured out how to have michael baldwin kidnapped. I wouldn’t put any of this past him.

Ashland: Yeah. You may be onto something. In a sick, twisted way, it all makes sense, but —

Victoria: But what?

Ashland: But victor will never believe it.

Victoria: He might… if we can find the proof.

Jack: You came all this way to tell me something I don’t want to hear?

Phyllis: Listen, I’m not defending diane at all. You know that. What she’s did is beyond disgusting.

Jack: Exactly. Exactly. Get to the part I’m gonna hate.

Phyllis: Kyle was a little boy when his mom “exited.” Now he’s a man with a family —

Jack: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, careful. You’re sounding dangerously like what diane said.

Phyllis: You want to protect your son, and I absolutely understand. I do that with summer all the time. I admit that.

Jack: Okay, you and summer have survived a lot — nothing like this.

Phyllis: Kyle was devastated when he learned his mom died.

Jack: You think you have to tell me that? Kyle was crushed when he lost his mother. Everyone in town was accused of her murder. He didn’t know who to trust. And I knew my mission was to get him through the pain. And, yes, it took time, but he got through it. He’s suffered enough. She can’t do any more to him. To lose your mother and then find out later that’s what she meant to have happen? She consciously meant to leave you? No. No. He is not going to learn that about her.

Phyllis: You’ve forgotten one thing. It’s diane. Look what she’s already done. She is a wrecking ball. You think she’s just gonna say, “okay,” and slither away? No. She’s gonna come back into his life. You cannot stop kyle from knowing the truth. You can’T.

Jack: I disagree with that. Diane came to me for help because she knows she needs it. She’s not gonna confront him on her own. She’s a coward. She’d rather fake her death than face what she did. No, she needs someone to help her in, someone to do her dirty work for her, and if it doesn’t work out that way, she will slither off and lick her wounds and ruin someone else’s life.

Phyllis: You believe that?

Jack: Yes. I believe that.

Phyllis: I think it’s wishful thinking on your part because you’re trying to protect your son.

[Sfx: Chicken clucking]

Ashland: If your suspicions are true, that puts my conversation with adam into a whole new light.

Victoria: What do you mean?

Ashland: Well, the way he was goading me on. He kept going on about how clever, how lucky I was to be getting away with it.

Victoria: Well, it’s projection on his part. His bragging about what he thinks he’s getting away with. It makes sense. I mean, who is benefiting more than adam than your falling out of favor with my family?

Ashland: I think this is worth investigating. But the first step is for me to call the pilot and tell him the trip to italy is off.

Victoria: What? Why?

Ashland: It’s obvious, isn’t it? We need to stay here. We need to do a deep dive into everything adam has been doing.

Sally: Maybe you’re right. You could end up in a really strong position at newman/locke, no matter what happens to victoria. And, yeah, maybe it’s true that your father only promoted you to send a message to your sister, but I think there’s more to it. It really feels like a test, to see what you can do with the company.

Adam: I need to do a better job than her. I need to prove that I am more daring, more innovative, and more competent than she is — and I need to do it all before she gets back from tuscany.

Sally: Wow. That sounds like a tall order.

Adam: No. It’s a piece of cake.

Jack: I am not going to let diane break kyle’s heart again. Look at the life he has with summer right now in milan. How much they love each other, how much they love harrison. She doesn’t get to blow that up. I’m going to do everything I can to keep her away from him.

Phyllis: Okay, I hear you, again.

Jack: Good. So, how about taking my side and not playing devil’s advocate?

Phyllis: You had another son that you kept information from. And look what happened there. It kept you from him.

Jack: Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. No, no. I did not have the bond with keemo that — kyle is a different story. He knows how much I love him. He knows I would do anything for him.

Phyllis: I know. So believe in that. Trust that. Trust the bond that you have with kyle. I am telling you… you know and I know diane. We are talking about diane jenkins. She will blindside your son just like she did you.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Yes. Hello. I am hoping you can help. I need kyle abbott’s direct line in milan. Oh, of course. It’s ashley abbott, his aunt. Uh, yes, I’m ready. Mm-hmm.

[ Pen clatters ] Thank you. For copd,

Jack: You’re right. You’re right. It’s wishful thinking that diane will walk away now. I just don’t know how to tell kyle. How do I turn his life upside down? You don’t do that over a phone call.

Phyllis: No, but you know diane. I mean, how much longer until she tries to blow up his life?

Jack: I don’t know. But I got to buy some time. I got to find some way to keep her away from him until I can warn him what is coming. I just hope I’m not too late.

Victor: You know better. I love our daughter. I adore her. I will never do anything to hurt her.

Nikki: I know that. But I also know that sometimes you can be very obstinate and inflexible when it comes to the business. And that’s not what victoria needs from you right now.

Victor: I know. And I haven’t made up my mind yet as to how to handle the whole business thing.

Nikki: Well, I don’t think you should until this crisis is resolved.

Victor: But you’re right. Running my company is not my priority right now. But getting our daughter through this is. I’ll do everything in my power to make sure we get rid of that bastard husband of hers… get him out of our lives.

Adam: Victoria has grabbed a lot of headlines while running the company. But what has she actually accomplished?

Sally: [ Sighs ] Well, she almost doubled the size of newman enterprises.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Yes, she was put in charge of a company that her father built, and then she merged it with one that locke created. And then she went on a spending spree. Chanccomm, newman media. It’s quite a impressive collection of assets, but what does she intend to do with her shiny toys? It’s never really been clear.

Sally: So you need to come out of the gate with a vision. Something unique, bold, and spectacular.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Everything depends on one perfect go-big-or-go-home idea that will grab everyone’s attention.

Sally: Like how I came up with designing victoria’s wedding dress to launch newman fashion.

Adam: Exactly. You see, because you have a knack for this sort of thing. Which is why I wanted to discuss it with you.

Sally: Well, I’m really glad you value my input.

Adam: I definitely do.

Sally: Then let’s grab another round and start brainstorming.

Ashland: You still think we should run off to tuscany?

Victoria: It seemed like the best way to get clear from all of this. But maybe our next move has already been chosen for us.

Ashland: Well, I’m just concerned about what might happen if we give our lead suspect too much room to operate.

Victoria: So…no tuscany. You know, when I was thinking about the trip, I was thinking that it would give us some much-needed space, but I think maybe you’re right. We shouldn’t give adam too much room to maneuver because if he is behind this, we need to put the pressure.

Ashland: God, I love how your mind works. I’m not sure I would have realized that adam is the one behind all these lies.

Victoria: Well, it’s not gonna be easy to prove. He’s definitely gonna try to cover his tracks.

Ashland: I’ll find a way. Count on it. And then we can get our lives back. You know, an hour ago, I didn’t think this was possible, but thanks to you, I can finally see an end to this nightmare.

Victoria: That’s right. This is the beginning of the end.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

[ Knock on door ]

[ Sighs ] I’m so glad you came back.

Phyllis: Oh, my god. It’s true. You’re alive.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] So if you are heading out the door early this morning you will probably want to grab the umbrella as we deal with the hopefully they’re done and out of the way.
