Award-winning recording artists Steve Richard and Tim Mauldin, aka The Fairwood Brothers, have joined forces to create a brand-new comedy series with writer/director Bud Schaetzle, the creative mind behind televised events starring Celine Dion, Wyclef Jean, Wynonna Judd, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. FAIRWOOD is a co-production of Richard’s Force MP Television and Schaetzle’s Metropolitan Sound + Vision. 48 HOURS and contributor Debora Patta – who just returned from covering the war in Ukraine – report on an American woman who suffered a fatal gunshot wound while on a safari vacation and the international investigation that followed, in “Death on Safari,” to be broadcast Saturday, April 16 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream on Paramount+. Lawrence Rudolph and his wife, Bianca, were getting ready to head back home after a safari vacation in Zambia, Africa in October 2016 when something went terribly wrong. The couple were experienced hunters. Lawrence, a successful dentist with several offices near Pittsburgh, Pa., told local authorities that he was in the bathroom of the couple’s two-room cabin when he heard a shot and found his wife dead in the next room. Local police found Bianca Rudolph lying on the floor with a gunshot wound. Lawrence said his wife was packing up a shotgun in a soft-shell gun case. At first, he told a local hunting scout that his wife had died by suicide, but later he told investigators that the gun must have accidentally fired. After two days of investigating, Zambian police closed the case, calling it an accident.
“It boggles the mind that two experienced hunters, for this to have been an accident,” says James Gagliano, a retired FBI supervisory special agent and a CBS News consultant.
There were also questions early on about how Bianca could have accidentally shot herself in the chest with such a long-barreled weapon. Kafue National Park investigator Masuwa Musese, who went to the couple’s cabin after the shooting, also had concerns. He said he took his theory to the local police.
“To me,” Musese says, “I suspected this to be a foul play. Because the way the firearm was lying. The way the deceased was lying. The way the bullet went through. Because, to me, to say that she shot herself, I doubt it.”
Game scout Spencer Kakoma maintains that he saw Bianca Rudolph clearing her weapon of live ammunition the night before the incident.
Lawrence had his wife’s body quickly cremated in Zambia, which led a friend of Bianca’s to doubt this was an accident. Soon after Bianca’s death, the friend called the FBI. According to an FBI complaint, she also said Lawrence was having an affair and had been verbally abusive to Bianca. The friend also told the FBI that the couple fought over money.
It took investigators five years to investigate the case. Lawrence was arrested in December 2021 for the murder of his wife. He maintains that he is innocent, and his attorneys write in a statement to 48 HOURS that the case is built “…without any real evidence, no eyewitnesses, no forensics, no anything.”
So what happened to Bianca Rudolph? Patta talks with a game scout, a park investigator, a retired police commander in Zambia and others about the case.

On Friday’s new Dateline NBC at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, correspondent Keith Morrison will report on the latest twists and turns in the case of Pam Hupp, who was charged last year in the murder of her close friend Betsy Faria. The two-hour special will feature new interviews, including with Leah Askey, the prosecutor behind the wrongful conviction of Betsy’s husband Russ Faria.
During The Real Thing About Pam, Morrison presses Askey about her decision to prosecute Russ instead of Hupp, who is currently serving life in prison for the murder of Louis Gumpenberger, which detectives allege she committed in an attempt to frame Russ.
Asked whether Gumpenberger may still be alive today if Askey had concentrated on prosecuting Hupp instead of Russ, she defended her actions, telling Morrison: “I don’t have any culpability in anything to do with Louis Gumpenberger. It is a terrible tragedy. But I was elected to do a job. And I did my job. And a jury convicted [Russ.]”
She also admitted that the murder of Gumpenberger made her think that Hupp was “capable of more” than she would have “given her credit for,” but that she still believes Hupp wasn’t involved in the murder of Betsy. She explained, “It made me think, that’s a terrible tragedy, and she obviously lost her marbles. Like, she snapped… She’s definitely gone off the deep end.” Hupp has pleaded not guilty in the murder of Betsy.
Friday’s special is a continuation of Morrison’s years-long reporting on Hupp, including how she impersonated a real-life Dateline producer. Morrison also hosted the #1 Dateline podcast, The Thing About Pam, which has been downloaded over 22 million times since its September 2019 launch. Additionally, the podcast was also the inspiration for NBC’s eponymous series starring two-time Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger. The scripted series was a collaboration between Blumhouse Television, NBC News Studios and Zellweger’s Big Picture Co.
The Real Thing About Pam is produced by Cathy Singer and Christine Fillmore and senior producer Adam Gorfain. David Corvo is the senior executive producer and Liz Cole is the executive producer.

Hearing her father’s screams for help, Jenna Neulander dialed 9-1-1 and summoned first responders to her home. Her father, Dr. Robert Neulander, a prominent obstetrician, was trying to help her mother, Leslie, who was unresponsive in the shower.
“My mother, I don’t know if she’s breathing, but she’s lying on the ground in the shower,” Jenna Neulander told a 9-1-1 dispatcher, while summoning help to their home in a suburb of Syracuse, New York.
Dr. Neulander says he began CPR. Then against Jenna’s pleas, Dr. Neulander moved her to the couple’s bedroom, he says, to more comfortably continue CPR. Leslie was later pronounced dead.
Jim Axelrod and 48 HOURS investigate the 2012 death of Leslie Neulander and the quest to find out what happened to her in “The Doctor’s Daughter,” to be broadcast Oct. 3, 2015 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Initially, Leslie Neulander’s death was declared an accident. However, investigators didn’t totally believe Dr. Robert Neulander’s version of events and wondered why a doctor would go against everything he’s been taught and move a gravely injured person nearly 60 feet.  Investigators also had questions about the blood at the scene, particularly the blood spatter near the bed.
Eighteen months after Leslie Neulander died, her husband was charged with her murder. One of the key witnesses in the case? Their daughter, Jenna. But does her 9-1-1 call help the prosecution or the defense?
The investigation into the death would uncover a troubled marriage, suggestions of a pending split and declining finances. Neulander’s defense team maintains that this was a loving and united home and Leslie died from injuries suffered from a fall in the shower. Prosecutors say it was murder and that the doctor tried to cover up a crime.
What happened in the Neulander home? Was it an accident or murder?
“It has all the elements…the rich defendant, the beautiful wife and the mystery surrounding it, the elements of, ‘was it a homicide? Was it an accident?’” says Onondaga County (NY) District Attorney William Fitzpatrick. “So it is huge for this community.”
