Billy: Hi.

Chelsea: I’m glad I ran into you. I wanted to thank you for the kindness you showed me when we ran into each other in the park. I don’t know if you could tell, but I was kind of having a moment.

Billy: It’s okay. We all have them. You feeling better today?

Chelsea: I am. Thank you. You know, life just keeps rolling along.

Billy: Yeah. That it does.

Chelsea: Speaking of pondering life, I wanted to let you know that I finally got a chance to listen to your podcast.

Billy: Oh, great. Did you enjoy it?

Chelsea: Actually, no, I didn’T…at all.

Michael: Thank you for your help with the situation in new york. That was much appreciated. And, yes, I will set up that meeting with victor newman in return. A deal’s a deal. I don’t go back on my promises. Yeah. Alright. Bye.

Lauren: What was that about?

Michael: Oh, just business stuff.

Lauren: Yes. I could tell. You had your slick voice on, which usually means you’re doing something squirrelly for victor.

Michael: Well, that’s quite the assumption.

Lauren: Hmm. But correct, no?

[ Cellphone thuds ]

Sally: I am not sure how I’m supposed to refer to you now. Your honor? Your royal highness?

Adam: I think those things are reserved for judges and kings.

Sally: How about newman media’s secret weapon?

Adam: Ooh. That’s — that’s not bad.

Sally: Well, that last one was a quote from another glowing story about the press conference. “It was a bold and confident performance by adam newman, who seems poised and ready to take newman enterprises into the future. He might just be the company’s secret weapon.”

Adam: It’s very nice to hear.

Sally: Is it? What’s wrong?

Adam: I don’t know. Everything went…well.

Sally: That’S…good.

Adam: Yeah, unless it went too well.

Sally: There is no such thing.

Adam: Look, I am confident. I am ready to whip this place into shape, but I just can’t help get the feeling that, um, there might be another shoe ready to drop.

Nick: Alright, what is it that couldn’t wait or be sent by text?

Victor: Hi, son. I just didn’t mean to alarm you, okay? I just wanted you to know that everything is in good hands… although ashland and victoria may not think so.

Nick: What does that mean, dad? What’d you do?

Victor: What did I do? What’d your father do? He’s thinking ahead. Whatever venture ashland and victoria are about to embark on, it’s gonna hit a brick wall.

[ Keys clacking ]

Chelsea: I really admire what you’re trying to do, but —

Chelsea: Okay. Well, I guess I’m in the minority then. You know, maybe I’m wrong.

Billy: Hmm. Look, I’m open for constructive criticism if you would like to share why you find my podcast so off-putting.

Chelsea: Uh, maybe that’s not such a good idea. I’m sorry I said anything.

Billy: No, but you’re not because you wouldn’t have said something. Clearly, you want me to know. So, please tell me. What is about my inner thoughts, about my dreams that is so awful for you?

Michael: I do not use a different voice when I conduct business for victor.

[ Deep voice ] I’m always slick, baby.

Lauren: Oh. You think so, huh?

[ Deep voice ] “I’m calling on behalf of victor newman. This is what we want. Get it done.”

Michael: No. The voice was wrong, but the words were right. Look, I’m doing my job. And I’m doing it damn well, by the way.

Lauren: Oh, I never said anything about the way you’re doing your job. It’s the nature of your job that I have an issue with.

Michael: And like I said, there is nothing criminal going on. And there’s no longer any danger of me landing in some foreign prison again.

Lauren: Oh, so you say. You’re working for victor newman, so never say never.

Michael: You know what? I think it’s time for another quick trip away. Maybe a romantic weekend?

Lauren: I wouldn’t hate that idea.

Michael: We could hop a plane to somewhere tropical. We could spend a few nights in a luxurious hotel. We could lie by the pool

[Deep voice] Drinking cocktails with little umbrellas…

Lauren: It’s very tempting. It really is. It’s just there’s so many big things going on for jabot and fenmore’S…

Michael: Yeah, yeah, okay.

Lauren: …And I just need to be here.

Michael: I get it. We have to hold off on it, but, you know, not for too long. That trip to france was so amazing.

Lauren: Mm.

Michael: I can’t wait to get away again, just the two of us, with no distractions.

Lauren: I look forward to that.

Michael: You know, maybe we don’t have to wait for another vacation to find… time for romance. Do you have any free time now? We could have lunch… back at our place… maybe in the bedroom.

Lauren: [ Laughing ] Oh, you are too much. It’s a good thing you’re so handsome and sexy.

Michael: It’s a package deal.

Lauren: Mmm, and I love the package. It’s just that I’ve got to get back to work. I don’t have time to go back home.

Michael: Mwah! You can’t blame a guy for trying.

Lauren: Ah, wait a minute. Wait a minute. I said I didn’t have time to go back home. But I never said anything about getting a room upstairs. Hmm? What do you think?

Victoria: You share your bad news first.

Ashland: Okay. Well, turns out we weren’t able to poach that media marketing genius we had at newman.

Victoria: Dan said no?

Ashland: Yeah. He, uh, doesn’t want to jump ship for a new company. He likes the security.

Victoria: A long-standing, successful conglomerate as opposed to a start-up.

[ Sighs ] I suppose that makes sense.

Ashland: Well, I gave him all the reasons I could for him to join us — a change of pace, exciting new challenges. He just didn’t bite.

Victoria: Well, that’s disappointing, but I understand his concern. Dan may have made the best call for himself, though, because our company may have already hit its first roadblock.

Ashland: Your bad news. You heard from the investors.

Victoria: Yeah. Unfortunately, they’ve turned us down.

Ashland: Wait. Wait. All of them?

Victoria: The entire list.

Ashland: No. Come on. It’s hard for me to believe that every single one of them said no. I mean, what are the odds of that? No, something’s not right here.

Victor: I approached the investors who were about to invest in whatever project victoria and ashland want to start. I told them not to invest a dime in it.

Nick: I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by that.

Victor: No, you shouldn’T. You know your dad always thinks a move ahead, right? I also asked michael baldwin to inform some potential future investors and warn them not to invest in any project that has ashland locke’s name attached to it.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] I mean…that’s pretty cut-throat.

Victor: I don’t play games. You know that. I had no other choice.

Nick: I don’t know about that.

Victor: What do you mean?

Nick: I’ve been thinking.

Victor: Oh?

Nick: What if this is a test from victoria? You know, to see if I would tell you what she was planning so she could find out if we actually believed in her for once or if we were undermining her yet again. Because if that’s the case, she got her answer, dad. You shut down her project before it even had a chance to get started. And I will have failed her final loyalty test.

Victor: Well… there’s that.

Frank is a fan of fast.

He’s a fast talker.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Michael: We still got it.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Baby, we never lost it.

Michael: Ooh. We haven’t played hooky like this in a long time.

Lauren: I know. Feels a little naughty, hmm?

[ Both laugh ]

Michael: It does.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: I am gonna respect the fact that you’re on a tight schedule. I’m not gonna derail your day.

Lauren: Mmm. Aww. Don’t rush. Don’t rush. We have time. We’re here. Let’s make the most of it.

Michael: You want to get your money’s worth for this room, don’t you?

Lauren: Well, I am an excellent businesswoman.

[ Laughs ] Let’s take our time.

Michael: What the lady wants, the lady gets.

Sally: I wouldn’t worry about another shoe dropping. You have to remember where you are now — on top of the world. You can handle any crisis that pops up.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, I’m not concerned about things regarding the company itself, but when it comes to the man who built this company, I have to be on my toes. Victoria could call him and say that she made a terrible mistake. She could say she wanted to come home, provided she could get her job back. My father would kick me to the curb as fast as possible because that’s been his plan all along.

Sally: I’m not discounting what you’re saying, but I don’t envision that happening. Victoria made such a bold statement in walking away, i can’t see her just doing a 180 and rushing back home. If she really loves ashland the way that we think she does, despite everything that he’s done to her, why would she throw all that away and come back just to spite you? It doesn’t make any emotional sense.

Adam: I agree. But, uh, my sister is much more complicated than you know.

Victoria: You know, I’m as surprised about the investors’ reactions as you are. I thought that our business plan was solid and our — our proposal was strong.

Ashland: And both you and i come to the table with a proven track record.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Well, not proven enough, apparently.

Ashland: What reasons did the investors give you for turning us down, hmm?

Victoria: They were vague. I mean, some talked about other investments taking priority, and some said that they just had prior commitments.

Ashland: No, no, there’s something off here. If they had prior commitments, they would not have come to meet with us in the first place. Is it possible that someone found out what we’re trying to do here and reached out to dissuade the investors?

Victoria: I know what you’re thinking.

Ashland: Who else? This is exactly kind of move your father would make.

Victor: Now, son, I know that you were reluctant to share this information with me. But trust me — this time, you made the right decision.

Nick: I’ve heard those words before, dad, and I’ve lived to regret it.

Victor: You won’t this time.

Nick: Do I even want to know what you’ve done to make sure people don’t invest in victoria and ashland’s company?

Victor: I’ve let people know that ashland locke suffered from small cell lung carcinoma. Very problematic cancer to deal with, okay?

Nick: So, you told them he’s dying.

Victor: Yeah. In essence, yes.

Nick: But he’s not dying.

Victor: Well, he told the world he has cancer, you know, an especially difficult form of it. So, who is gonna invest in a company led by a man who’s about to die?

Nick: I mean, it’s pretty clever.

Victor: Well, the beauty of it is that michael baldwin and i have not said anything that isn’t true. Only ashland locke has. Told a lie. Coming back to bite him.

Nick: I’m guessing you’re walking a fine line.

Victor: Your father’s often walked a fine line, okay? Let me ask you, son. You’ve always complained about the fact that I never brought you into the loop. Now I have. Aren’t you happy about that?

Nick: No, I, uh — i appreciate you bringing me in. I do, especially when it comes to matters of the family. I’m just… I’m feeling guilty. Victoria’s gonna know I betrayed her. And I am nervous about the blowback when this all hits the fan.

Victor: I’m not, son. We have to do everything to save your sister and to save this company. And I’ll do whatever it takes to do so! Can dove stop 98%

Sally: Again, I don’t want to insult you.

Billy: Mm.

Sally: But if you want me to be honest with you about your podcast, I will be.

Billy: Please. Go ahead.

Chelsea: Okay, so, here’s the thing. I feel like the first few episodes are too mired in self-recrimination and pain from the past.

Billy: Well, um, I try to make my audience feel seen, to make the whole process feel cathartic.

Chelsea: Right. Well, I can only speak for myself. I just found it difficult to continually listen to all that darkness, you know? I want to laugh. I want to listen to something that is uplifting and entertaining. I mean, I understand the whole adage of “misery loves company” —

Billy: So, my podcast made you feel miserable.

Chelsea: [ Stammers ] I just feel like what people really need right now is to be lifted up, you know? They need to hear you saying things like, “we’re all gonna get through this,” and, “let’s all try to enjoy life for a little while.”

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: You know, for me, i had a really hard year. It was emotionally draining, you know? I need to be pulled up out of that darkness, maybe in some fun, crazy way.

Billy: And my podcast does the opposite.

Chelsea: I just feel like you are, when you want to be, one of the funniest people I know. And when I listened to that podcast, I just felt like I was missing out on all of the levity, you know, all of the humor. It’s just my two cents. But maybe try reminding the folks out there that life should be joyous and not reminding them that the world is a crazy place right now because guess what, billy. We already know.

Billy: Yeah. No. Um… wow, chels, you make it sound like I don’t have any joy, like I don’t enjoy life whatsoever, and I do. I’m not walking around in some dark cloud 24 hours a day, okay? That’s just not true.

Chelsea: Okay. I feel like you’re getting a little defensive, which is a sign to me that maybe deep down you know I’m right.

Billy: Mm. I can see where you’re coming from.

Chelsea: Well, thanks for hearing me out.

Billy: I guess I’ve just forgotten how well you used to know me.

[ Both laugh ]

Lauren: Whoo!

Michael: Yes!

Lauren: We should do that more often.

Michael: [ Sighs ] You don’t have to ask me twice.

Lauren: Aw, I hate to break this off, but I’ve got to go back to work.

Michael: Oh, fine. Fine.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: Our stolen moments upstairs will tide me over till tonight.

[ Sighs ] In the meantime, I have a few more phone calls to make…

[Deep voice] In my slick voice.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] I’ll see you tonight, tiger.

Michael: Mm.

Sally: Victoria must be a complicated woman because why else would she be involved with a man like ashland, not once, but twice?

Adam: Well, my sister’s issues go far beyond locke. Her need for power and dad’s approval may just prove to be stronger than her love for ashland. So, we can’t write her off just yet. She might change her mind and come back.

Sally: I have to say i disagree. You may know your sister, but i am better on love.

Adam: I hope you are right.

Sally: But in the meantime, you should just enjoy your time in the big chair.

Adam: Okay. [ Clears throat ] Okay, I will try. ‘Cause it would really suck to get deposed from the throne before I had a chance to prove myself.

Sally: You are going to prove that you’re the best person for this job. And I can’t wait to watch you do it.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You know, I’m sad to say it, but your theory sounds all too possible. My father — he has always amazed me with his ability to find out the most private things about people and everything. I mean, it’s like his superpower. And his connections and his reach are wider than anyone could ever imagine.

Ashland: And he used them to prevent his own daughter from raising capital to start a new company?

Victoria: Well, I’m sure he justified it by telling himself that I turned my back on the family and he just couldn’t stand for that. Leave it to him to ensure that i wouldn’t be able to make a clean break.

Ashland: It is infuriating and insulting that your family will not let you just live your own life. I mean, I don’t know how you put upwith their interference for as long as you did.

Victoria: It took you coming into my life to make me finally see that and to want to push back.

Ashland: Okay, well, we’re not gonna take this lying down, okay? The first thing we have to do is figure out how victor found out what we’re doing here. Did you say anything to anyone, even by accident? Maybe just mentioned to somebody that we were going to new york city?

Victoria: No.

Ashland: To nikki or billy?

Victoria: No. I haven’t said anything to anyone, not even billy yet. I’m still so frustrated and angry with them. I mean, I need some time and some space to just calm down before I can even speak to them again.

Ashland: Hey, look, um, i know — I know how much this hurts you, even more than you’re letting on. But I have to ask this question — are you sure you really want to do this? Are you able to start a whole new life with me and leave your family behind? I’m jonathan lawson

Billy: Well, that wasn’t exactly easy to hear, but i appreciate your candor. And, yeah, maybe you’re right. Maybe my podcast could use a little lightness, maybe even a few jokes.

Chelsea: Hi!

Billy: Hey there. Chelsea was just giving me a not-so-glowing review about the podcast.

Chelsea: I didn’t want to offend you, but you asked me my opinion. I’m gonna give you an honest answer.

Billy: I’m not sure I asked. Kind of just gave it to me.

Lily: Well, let me guess. Was the gist that the podcast needs a little more levity and less misery?

Billy: Misery? I’m miserable now?

Lily: [ Laughs ] No. I just figure that if someone’s gonna give you criticism, it would be that the podcast is a little, you know…dour.

Billy: Oh, wow.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Billy: Ah.

Lily: No, I mean, look, i think that you’ve done a great job with it and I know that you’re going through a lot and i think this was kind of your way of, you know, working through it all, so…

Billy: Well, it wasn’t really about me working through things. I mean, not exactly. It was about connecting with people that may be going through similar things. It wasn’t, like, a comedy podcast.

Lily: No. I understand. I agree with chelsea that maybe the medicine needs to go down with a little bit of sugar, you know?&

Chelsea: I was telling billy he’s, like, one of the funniest guys I know. You know, you want to hang out with him at a party because he’ll make you laugh and you’ll learn a few things.

Billy: That’s who I thought i was being. I thought I was that guy. Clearly, I’m a little stuck in my head. So, if, uh, two smart, savvy women are telling me so [Sighs] Then I better listen.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Nick: Dad, you saw how adamant victoria was about having her independence. And I’m afraid that your next move or the ones you’ve already done are just gonna set her off even more. I’ve tried many times to reach out to her. She’s not answering any calls or texts

Victor: Well, there’s nothing more for you to do right now, okay? Just sit back and give your sister some time.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Look, I know you’re hoping that putting adam in the ceo seat will force victoria to come home and retake the reins of the company, but when I talked to victoria, she already knew about the press conference. She was completely unfazed by it.

Victor: I highly doubt that. She still has newman blood running through her veins, okay?

Nick: Okay. So, I mean, what are you thinking? Is there another chess move to be made here?

Victor: I just wonder why victoria would tell you that she and ashland went to new york to start a new venture.

Nick: Do you think she knew that I would tell you? I mean, are you already seven steps ahead?

Victor: You’ll find out.

Nick: Look, I just — I don’t like all the deception that is required with all these moves and counter moves. Is more gamesmanship needed here? You know all the lies we had to pry out of ashland and everything we had to do to counter them. I just don’t know if it’s necessary. Do you think it’s gonna reunite the family?

Victoria: I am not going back on my decision. And [Sighs] I couldn’t stand letting myself be controlled and coddled by them for one more second. I don’t need their so-called protection. I need them to see me as a person that cannot be manipulated. I know what I want. And I’m doing the right thing. It’s — it’s — it’s the only thing to do.

Ashland: I know you don’t need my approval or my opinion, but for what it’s worth, i agree. I think it’s time for you to stand up for yourself, and i want to be standing right there beside you while you do. Your family has pushed and pushed and pushed, and they deserve whatever they get from this point on.

Victoria: Yes. And in time, they’re gonna realize that I know exactly what I’m doing.

Ashland: Oh, and I hope I’m there to witness that moment when the newman family finally admits defeat. I’ll tell you what — why don’t we stop talking about newmans?

Victoria: Yes.

Ashland: Let’s eat.

Victoria: Oh, yes, let’s eat. Ugh. I’m ready to relax.

Chelsea: Hi.

Lauren: Have I arrived at a different meeting than i thought?

[ Laughter ]

Billy: No, no, just a chance encounter. We’re not getting into the fashion business.

Lily: No, we have enough on our plate.

Billy: Chelsea was just sharing some, uh — some very sound advice about the business of podcasting.

Chelsea: I apologize again if I was too blunt.

Billy: You weren’T. Hey, lauren, have you heard the one about the blunt pencil? Forget it. It’s pointless.

Lauren: Oh!

Chelsea: Oh, my god! What have I done? I take it back. You’re not really that funny.

Billy: I have only started. Wait till the next episode.

[ Laughter ]

Chelsea: Well, we should go.

Lauren: Okay, let’s go.

Billy: Um, excuse me, miss. Why did you not tell me that my podcast was miserable?

Lily: No, I — I wasn’t sugarcoating my opinion. I thought that your tone was refreshing. I mean, there’s a lot of chipper podcasts out there, and i thought that yours was very, you know, real.

Billy: “Real.” To you, that translates into dour. I mean, honestly, am I a morose person?

Lily: Okay, stop. Don’t let a little constructive criticism send you down a rabbit hole.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Lily: Okay? No, look how many people are listening to just your podcast. And the comments on social media — people like it. Even chelsea thought you were funny.

Billy: Ah. Well, she’s not wrong. I do have a great sense of humor. Or about people needing joy and laughter in their life.

Lauren: I’m so sorry I’m late. You can, uh, blame my husband for the delay.

Chelsea: Ah. Looks like you’re really upset about it.

Lauren: So upset.

[ Both laugh ] It was a much-needed respite.

Chelsea: I get it. A little love in the afternoon. Lucky you.

Lauren: I am lucky. I’m married to the love of my life.

Chelsea: Mm.

Lauren: Alright, now let’s talk about fashion.

Chelsea: Okay. Well, I heard about gloria’s trip to london. And I know I’ve been out of the scene for a while, but I am really interested in all the trends and designers over there.

Lauren: Oh, yeah. There are some wonderful, fresh ieas coming out of the city. I’ll put the two of you together.

Chelsea: Okay. Perfect.

Lauren: There is one thing. Um, when I sat down with gloria, she seemed very concerned about you. She felt like there was some tension between you and chloe.

Ashland: There’s got to be other investors we can reach out to. I’ll go back through my list of major players.

Victoria: Yes, and I’ll go through mine, as well, but so far, I can’t think of any that my father can’t get to.

[ Sighs ] It’s frustrating to admit, but I think that my father’s influence outweighs ours by a bit.

Ashland: Boy, victor really is a piece of work, isn’t he? You know, most fathers — they want to support their daughters’ choices, not actively sabotage them. And I don’t understand why he keeps trying to rule your life with such a tight grip. I mean, what does he get out of that? He’s just driving you further and further away. But — but having said all that, I am not going to let him thwart our dream, alright, of starting a whole new company together. We’re just gonna have to figure out something else.

Victoria: I know that you’ve had your reservations about this, but maybe we should give some more thought to funding our venture ourselves. Yes, I know. I know. It’s risky, but, I mean, is it really such a big risk when we’re betting on ourselves?

Ashland: Okay, well, that’s a fair point. We both certainly know we’re capable of doing great things.

Victor: I know that we’ll be successful. I know it. And we won’t have to, uh, waste our time and effort going back to the financial community and begging for money. And we will save ourselves the humiliation of possibly knocking on doors and getting them slammed in our faces around town.

Ashland: Once it gets out there that we’re having trouble raising money, it’s gonna cast a shadow over everything we’re trying to do. And the idea of going back to investors and possibly being rejected — I don’t like that at all, no.

Victoria: The more rejection we face, the worse the perception of our new company will be.

Ashland: That’s the last thing we want.

Victoria: No.

Ashland: Maybe it would be a bigger thrill and there’d be more satisfaction in starting something entirely on our own, creating something from scratch. And doing it with you — that would be the world to me. I… maybe you’re right. Maybe this is the best move. And think of this, too — if all the investment capital is ours, then all off the potential profit is ours. I mean, why give away part of the house when you can have the whole thing?

Victoria: Yeah.

Ashland: Let’s do this. Me and money are all-in.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Hey, guys.

Victor: Hey.

Adam: What’s going on here? If it has anything to do with newman, sally and I should probably be in the loop.

Nick: Hey, congratulations, you know, on your promotions.

Sally: Thanks.

Adam: Wasn’t, uh, something we were necessarily expecting, at least not the way it came to pass.

Sally: Yeah, who would have imagined victoria would have walked away from everything like that?

Adam: I always thought the company was her top priority, but I guess not. Sally thinks her running off with ashland is romantic.

Sally: Well, she obviously loves him, and in the end, that’s the most important thing, right?

Adam: I know that you only care about victoria’s well-being since you don’t give a damn one way or another who’s running newman. You’ve made it clear that you’re not invested in the family business.

Nick: Yeah, well, things may be changing on that front.

Adam: Really? Well, um, I look forward to hearing more about it. Excuse us.

Chelsea: I venture to guess that her concern is just gloria being gloria.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Well, I know my mother-in-law well, and I certainly know how she can be. And this was not about gossip. She was genuinely concerned about the dynamic between you and chloE.

Chelsea: Chloe and I are best friends and old pros. Of course we’re gonna have disagreements every once in a while, but we’ll get through it. We always do.

Lauren: Okay. Good. I’m relieved to hear that.

Chelsea: Yeah. Please don’t even give it a second thought.

Lauren: Alright. So, let’s move on. Have you heard from summer?

Chelsea: Yes. Actually, I have a meeting with her later today.

Lauren: Mm.

Chelsea: Do you know what she wants to talk to me about?

Lauren: I do, but I don’t want to step on her news.

Chelsea: Oh. Okay, well, that’s a tease. I’m even more intrigued now. Can you give me a hint?

Lauren: No.

[ Both laugh ] You’ll know soon enough. I would love to talk to you about your fabulous fabric choices, though.

Chelsea: Alright. If you insist. I’m so glad you like them. I am definitely attracted to prints that are layered, bright, and interesting.

Lauren: Oh. That’s fantastic. Oh, yes, I love this. Especially this.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Victoria: This is so exciting. And, you know, I’m as eager as you are to get the ball rolling on this. I think the first thing I want to do is I’m gonna open a corporate bank account for our newly formed company.

Ashland: [ Laughs ]

Victoria: You know what you should do? You should call our real-estate broker and have him look for a property for us.

Ashland: Ah.

Victoria: We need an entire building.

Ashland: Oh, you don’t think a floor of offices is gonna be enough?

Victoria: No, no. We need to think big. Come on. Why? Why would we waste the time and money on a lease when we’re gonna be growing at a rapid rate? I mean, I assume so, don’t you?

Ashland: I just love the way we both look at the world the same way — as something to be devoured.

Victoria: And I can’t wait to savor every morsel.

Ashland: I feel like we’re so close to recapturing the magic we had when we first met.

Victoria: Closer than you can imagine.

Nick: I didn’t mean anything by what I said about the company. It was just a knee-jerk response to adam.

Victor: You sure about that? I’ve noticed an increased interest on your part in newman business.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] You’re reading too much into it.

Victor: I am?

Nick: Yeah. I was just trying to get under his skin.

Victor: Hmm.

Nick: Look, we both know he doesn’t give a damn about victoria. He only cares about running newman enterprises. And I just wanted to give him something to worry about.

Victor: Huh.

Ashland: Yes, you heard me correctly. We want to buy an entire building! Yeah. Yeah, no, can you take a look, see what’s on the market? We want to move quickly on this thing. Right. Yeah. No, that sounds like it might work. Yeah. Interesting. Okay. Uh-huh. Great. Okay.

Allie: What?

Noah: I said, what are —

Allie: [ Chuckles ] Sorry. Hey.

Noah: I was trying to make a joke about running into you when you’re about to go running.

Allie: That’s not really a joke since I called you and invited you to join me.

Noah: Okay. Not funny. But, you know, it did sound a little charming in my head.

Allie: Mm-hmm. Sure it did. Alright. Are you ready?

Noah: Let’s do this.

Allie: Alright. Great. Try to keep up!

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: So, what brings you by? A big cup of coffee or a little friendly conversation?

Nick: I’ll take both.

Sharon: I, um, saw victor and adam’s press conference earlier. I hope you knew that all of that was gonna happen.

Nick: Yeah, I was fully aware and in the loop this time. Once victoria said she was reunited with ashland, the writing was on the wall. She packed up her things, she said goodbye to the family, and then left town, the way she said she was gonna.

Sharon: Really? I’m kind of surprised how quickly that situation escalated.

Nick: When my sister makes up her mind, there is no slowing her down.

Sharon: Mm. Well, I hope you at least got to speak to victoria before she left and tell her that you will always be there for her, no matter what she decides to do.

Nick: I did, uh, get a chance to talk to her. Grateful for that. Obviously completely disagree with her decision, but me being frustrated with the family is pretty common right now.

Sharon: Is there something else going on?

Nick: I just really don’t like it that my dad put adam into the ceo seat. We both know how he handled that last time. And I think it’s a foolish move to shove adam right into victoria’s chair before it even gets cold. Victoria’s reign may be over, but trust me — the second round of games is about to begin.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

[ Keys clacking ]

Tessa: [ Clears throat ] Hi.

Mariah: Hey.

Tessa: [ Smooches ]

Mariah: Why’d you stop? Oh, well, uh, with you working remotely, I figured my music was probably distracting.

Mariah: What are you talking about? How many people get to work with a private concert in the background? I love it. Just like I love calling you my wife.

Tessa: Well, tell me — what’s my wife working on lately?

Mariah: Well, uh, the marketing team has their hands full now that jabot has acquired marchetti, so we all need to get up to speed on the fashion industry.

Tessa: Whew, that sounds like a pretty big deal.

Mariah: It is. It is. But we can handle it. It’s all good. And it means that kyle is gonna be sticking around for longer with harrison. You know, I’d even be happy to see summer stick around, too.

Tessa: Look how far you’ve come.

Mariah: I know. It’s wonderful.

[ Laughs ]

Tessa: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: But as thrilled as i am that they’re gonna be staying in town, that also means that kyle’s mom, diane, is gonna be doing the same. And that… that is very, very complicated for a lot of people in genoa city.

Tessa: Hmm.

Diane: Jack, is everything alright?

Jack: Yeah. Yeah. Everything’s fine. I just have something I have to deal with.

Diane: Oh. Then I’ll let you have some privacy. I was hoping to spend some time with harrison anyway. I thought maybe I could take him to the park, if that’s alright?

Jack: Uh, sure. I’m sure he’d like that, especially with kyle and summer kind of tied up.

Diane: Excellent. I will go get him ready and let the nanny know she can take a break.

[ Sighs ] Listen. I’d love to talk. Um, we still have some unresolved business.

Jack: I think I said before you left that there’s nothing more for us to say.

Phyllis: Okay. Listen, are we gonna let this thing with diane ruin all the progress we’ve made?

Jack: This thing was between you and me, not diane.

Phyllis: You’re right. You’re right. Can we at least talk about it?

Jack: Yeah. We can. We should do this in person, though. I’ll come to you.

[ Keys jangling ]

Diane: Harrison is so excited about our playdate. I’ll just pack some snacks.

Jack: Good. Have fun.

[ Door closes ]

Tessa: Well, I hope that kyle knows, whatever happens with diane, that we’re here to support him.

Mariah: Oh. Yeah. I’ve definitely made that clear. I mean, I know what it’s like to have your mom come into your life suddenly when you’re an adult, so I’m happy to be his sounding board.

Tessa: Mm.

Mariah: What are you looking for in there?

Tessa: Uh, tea and honey. I thought that we had some, but I guess we’re out.

Mariah: Really? I mean, we had plenty the other day. Did you go through it already?

Tessa: Yeah. I guess I must have. I’ve been drinking a lot because my throat is still a little sore.

Mariah: Does it hurt to sing?

Tessa: No, no. Uh, not really. I was just resting my voice because I’ve been singing a lot for rehearsing for tour, and that’s probably why it’s aggravated. I’m sure it’s no big deal.

Mariah: Maybe you’re coming down with something.

Tessa: Well, but I don’t have any other symptoms. It’s probably allergies. You know, it’s that time of year.

Mariah: Yeah, but your throat’s been bugging you ever since we got back from the honeymoon. Maybe you should go and have it checked out. You know, I heard of these amazing people. They’re called doctors. And they can help with that sort of thing.

Tessa: I’m sure it’s nothing. And instead of debating the issue, maybe you should, uh, take a break with me.

Sharon: Newman family games. That sounds ominous.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Dad and adam are only thinking about themselves. You know, they each have an agenda. They’re not thinking about what’s best for the company.

Sharon: Well, hopefully they at least have one goal in common — that newman enterprises succeeds, right?

Nick: I will allow that adam does seem to possess the skills to do a job like this. He’s done a great job of evolving in the past year. But his desire to ascend to the throne comes from a very selfish place.

Sharon: Look, I’m — I’m not trying to defend adam here, but — I don’t know — is it possible that maybe you’re being a little too hard on him?

Nick: Sharon, just look this situation with ashland. Adam doesn’t give a damn about victoria or what happens to her. He’s just patiently waiting for his chance to swoop in and grab the ceo title for himself.

Sharon: Hmm. Well, maybe he was just concerned that the company would suffer with so much going on?

Nick: Ultimately, his true motives don’t even matter. I mean, this was dad’s call to make. And it’s not like he didn’t have other options. I mean, my mom certainly could have done the job herself, or, in an emergency, dad could have stepped back in.

Sharon: You know, I’m surprised that nikki didn’t push for that job. I mean, she was victoria’s co-ceo.

Nick: Yeah, she’s got mixed feelings about that. But this move was made to send a message to victoria and to provoke a reaction. So, this isn’t about business. It’s strictly personal.

Sharon: Ah, so your parents are hoping this move with adam will make victoria come running back.

Nick: There you go.

Sharon: Well, hey, it’s a gamble, but it could work. And if it does, where does that leave adam?

Nick: Well, adam’s no dummy. I’m sure he’s got his eyes wide open. He knows how dad likes to operate, but he wants to prove that he’s the right man for the job, whether my sister changes her mind or not. And unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.

Sharon: It just never ends, does it?

Nick: It really doesn’T. This whole thing is filled with a bunch of gory details I’m not gonna bore you with, but just know this — everyone has got an angle, but they’re all acting on emotion. My sister, my dad, adam, my mom. They all just need to take a collective breath and figure out what is the next best move to make.

Sharon: And who’s gonna get them to do that?

Nick: Well, unfortunately, it’s times like this I’m reminded that I don’t have a real official role at newman, other than my board seat. So, at times, I would like to have more influence over the, uh — the outcomes of the crises when they pop up.

Sharon: What are you saying here? Are you actually considering going back to newman? Can dove stop 98%

Nick: That was not my intent. I’m not seriously considering throwing my hat back into the ring at newman.

Sharon: Mm, maybe not consciously, but the way you were talking just now…

Nick: I don’t know. I just would like to be more than just some voice offering up my opinions and advice from the outside.

Sharon: Since when? ‘Cause I thought you wanted nothing to do with newman enterprises.

Nick: Yeah. Me too. But this whole situation’s got me really rethinking some things. I mean, it’s been a long time since I’ve felt like this. I thought everything was going great. You know, the company was flourishing under victoria’s incredible leadership. Mom was her right-hand man. Dad was in advisory role. Adam was over at newman media crushing it.

Sharon: Well, then that all blew up.

Nick: Again. I’m just [Sighs] — Just very nervous about how this is gonna play out within my family and also in the eyes of the public and the business world.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Tessa: Hi.

Nick: Hey. There they are.

Mariah: Hi.

Sharon: Oh, there’s the two newlyweds. I barely see you since you’ve been home from france, even though you live right upstairs.

Tessa: Oh, yeah, well…

Mariah: We’ve just been taking care of stuff that piled up when we were gone.

Nick: Ah. Too busy honeymooning.

Sharon: Hey, enjoy some time alone being honeymooners. Say no more.

Nick: How’s your day today?

Mariah: Uh, well, I am fantastic, but this one…

Tessa: This one is fine. I just need a mug of tea and honey.

Mariah: Yeah, because she guzzled all of ours down for her sore throat.

Sharon: Really? That’s been going on for a while now, hasn’t it?

Tessa: Yeah, but I’m — I’m sure it’s nothing.

Sharon: Well, whether it is or whether it isn’t, um, you should see someone about it.

Mariah: And there it is, the other reason why we are here — because I knew that I would find someone who agrees with me.

[ Both breathing heavily ]

Noah: You know, I consider myself a pretty decent athlete.

Allie: You do?

Noah: Yeah.

Allie: Yeah?

Noah: I play sports, I work out all the time, but… you’re fast, like, really fast.

Allie: Well, I run almost every day. It’s kind of my thing. Well, one of my many things.

Noah: Along with chemical engineering, being super analytical and precise about everything? You know, some people might say you’re a type-a personality.

Allie: And you know what? Those people might be right. What? You got a problem with it?

Noah: No. No. In fact, I kind of envy you. I wish I had a routine.

Allie: You can always create new habits right now.

Noah: Nah. Nah. It’s just not me. I’ve always needed to be inspired to get stuff done.

Allie: Mm. Well, maybe — just maybe — you can find some inspiration from the way I just kicked your butt.

Noah: Oh.

Allie: I mean, I’m sure you don’t want to be embarrassed like that again.

Noah: Oh, that will never happen again.

Allie: Ah. Uh-huh.

Diane: Have fun on the playground, harrison! Oh. Nice to see you two.

[ Knock on door ]

Phyllis: Hey. Thank you for coming. Come on in. Thanks. Um…thank you for the opportunity. Uh… and you’re right. It’s better to talk face-to-face.

Jack: I’m here to let you say whatever it is you have to say, but I should warn you — it’s not gonna change anything.

Phyllis: Okay. I get it. Thanks for giving me the chance. You want some wine?

Jack: It’s a little early for me. Please don’t let me stop you.

Phyllis: Okay, well, I’m — I’m having wine. It’s good for the nerves. I mean — but please join me. It’s a great year. Um… you’re not gonna make me drink alone, are you?

Jack: This isn’t gonna work, red.

Phyllis: Well, how do you know that? You haven’t even heard anything I have to say. You know better than to count me out. If your moderate to severe crohn’s disease

Sharon: Okay, tessa, you are my daughter-in-law now, so I’m going to give you some motherly advice. You need to make an appointment. It’s been too many days, and it’s not gotten better. And what could it hurt? If it’s something minor, it’s no harm, no foul, and if it is something more serious, well, you’ll have caught it early.

Nick: And nobody has brought up the real upset of all this, and that is you could get mariah to stop bugging you to death about it because we all know she’s never gonna let it go.

Sharon: Love is the most important part of marriage, but compromise is right up there with it.

Mariah: Exactly. And, look, one day you are gonna need me to compromise on something, and I promise I will do it gladly for the benefit of our relationship.

Tessa: I’m gonna hold you to that because we have witnesses.

Mariah: I promise. So, you’ll make the appointment?

Tessa: Ugh! Okay, okay. I’ll see if my doctor can squeeze me in.

Mariah: Today.

Tessa: Okay. As soon as possible.

Mariah: [ Chuckles ] Wonderful. I knew I came to the right place.

Nick: You’re welcome.

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Diane: Allie, I’m glad you found another young person to hang out with. You two seem to be spending a lot of time together. And, noah, I’m sure you know other people your age that you could introduce allie to, as well.

Noah: Yeah, I do, but I don’t see why that’s any of your concern.

Allie: Noah, she’s just — she’s just being friendly.

Diane: No, no, it’s alright, allie. I thought noah was okay with me. He seemed fine the last time we saw each other. But now I know he was just holding back.

Noah: What did you expect? What, that I could just forget the past, stand around making small talk like nothing ever happened? I wish I can give you the benefit of the doubt, diane. I really do. But you did some seriously messed-up stuff to people I care about. And I don’t plan on getting over that anytime soon.

Phyllis: Okay. Uh, listen, I did a lot of thinking when I was in savannah, and, um… how I flaunted our relationship to stick it to diane. I’m — [ Sighs ] I hate that you think I used you. I’m so sorry. If I could do it over again… listen. You were right to be furious with me. I’m — I’m furious with myself.

Jack: Phyllis —

Phyllis: Just let me finish. Just let me — let me finish. Um… uh, it was outrageous and it was immature and it wrong. And there’s no justifying it. I’m not — I’m not trying to justify my actions.

[ Breathes deeply ] Jack. It’s old wounds, you know? It’s just a lot of old wounds and insecurities and… it’s getting the better of me.

Jack: You talk a great game. You always have. I’ve heard this before. And remember — I got a recent reminder that you are a master at faking sincerity.

Phyllis: You think I’m faking it right now? Is that what you think? You think I’m being cavalier about this?

[ Voice breaking ] I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve right now. I may seem fine, but I am losing it inside. I am losing it. And I am sorry. I don’t know what to tell you. I regret my actions. I regret them. I do. I mean, and I cannot believe that I blew everything up when we were getting so close.

Jack: Close to what? We had a couple passionate encounters, prompted by the return of a woman you hate.

Phyllis: Is that how you see everything?

Jack: No, what we had is not the beginning of a relationship. What we had…is a moment… to imagine what could have been, a little what-if. At least, that’s what it was for me. For you, it was a calculated move designed to one-up diane.

Phyllis: Okay, it was more complicated than that.

Jack: Oh, you want to be honest? Good. Let’s be honest. You only regret what you did because it backfired. I thought things had changed. I thought things you changed. I thought you were finally capable of building a future that we talked about, that we wanted, that we deserved. That woman came back to town, and in no time out comes the phyllis of years ago. I am not gonna make the same mistakes again. You have to accept the fact that whatever fleeting moment we had is over.

Phyllis: I have changed. I have. And I will prove it to you.

Diane: You have every reason to feel that way about me, noah.

Allie: Look, guys, I wasn’t here when all of this happened, so I can’t speak to that. But what I do know is that diane did me a big favor. Without her, I would still have been all alone out in the world, and now I have this big, beautiful family, out of nowhere.

Noah: Yeah, but the way she went about introducing you and jack was a bit sketchy, don’t you think?

Allie: Agreed. Absolutely. She could have gone about it in a better way. But I do think who she is now versus what she did in the past isn’t the same person.

Diane: Thank you, allie. I’m touched and grateful that you’ve even given me even half a chance. But I have no choice. I have to face these attacks because I did do some pretty terrible things. And I understand that there are some people who will have a problem with my presence here, but I can take it. Because spending time with my son and grandson makes it all absolutely worth it. Harrison, come on, little one!

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: I am so glad that tessa’s doctor could get her in today. She was being so stubborn. She wasn’t listening to me. So, thank you for the backup.

Sharon: Just doing my mother-in-law duties.

Mariah: And thank you for letting us derail whatever conversation you were having when we walked in.

Nick: Tessa’s health is far more important.

Mariah: Well, I saw the look between the two of you. Anything wrong?

Sharon: Um, no complaints on my end, at least not at the moment.

Mariah: Nick? What about you? Is everything alright?

Nick: I’m assuming you saw the press conference?

Mariah: Yes. Yes, I did. Victoria’s out. Adam’s in. I — I definitely did not see that coming.

Nick: Well, you should know by now newmans like to keep people on their toes.

Mariah: I’ll take that to mean that you don’t want to talk about it. Or least you don’t want to talk about it with me, which is fine. So, let me just say — I wish you luck with whatever you’re going through with your family.

Nick: Thank you.

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Mariah: Oh. Um, well, that’s work, so I — I’ve got to take this. I’m so sorry. I have to run. But thank you guys. I’ll see you later.

Sharon: See you later.

Nick: Bye.

Mariah: Hi. Yes, uh, just one second. Let me grab my computer.

Sharon: So, where were we? Earlier it seemed like maybe you were just sorting through some of your feelings, but I got the distinct impression that you would not be content sitting on the sidelines of newman.

Nick: You seem shocked by the very idea of that.

Sharon: Oh, I am. Believe me, I never thought that we would be having this conversation again…ever.

Nick: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: I have flaws. I know I have flaws. Everybody has flaws. But I went and I extended an olive branch to that woman. I told her that I’m putting the past behind me. There’s no resentment. And you know why I did that? Because it was best for all of us.

Jack: From what I understand, the real reason for this grand gesture was summer, who was present at this supposed meeting of the minds. She have to drag you there kicking and screaming?

Phyllis: No, she didn’T. I went willingly.

Jack: Well, you’ll forgive me if I doubt the veracity of this so-called truth.

Phyllis: Okay, do you think that was easy for me to sit there and say all of that to diane? No. It was very difficult. But why did I do it? Because it was good. It was the greater good — for everyone!

Jack: Including us? There is no us.

Phyllis: Stop it.

[ Stammers ] Okay. Let’s just go back. When we went to california to find allie and then we discovered diane… I mean, did you — did you not feel that there was a deeper connection in our relationship?

Jack: As friends. As friends, phyllis. We should have settled for that. Look, I take full blame for crossing the linE. I should have known better. But I let my desire and my fervent hope for something greater get in my way. And now I may have destroyed even the friendship.

Phyllis: No, you didn’T. You didn’t destroy it. You didn’T. I’m still your friend. I mean, come on, jack. Enough of this. This is not where our story ends. You love rich, delicious ice cream.

Nick: Believe me, these thoughts of going back to newman are just as much of a shock to me, but what can I say? I’ve got a long history with that place.

Sharon: Yes. You led that company many times over the years. But I thought you were done with it now, at least in any formal capacity. And, you know, I was really proud of you when you extricated yourself from the family business and all of its drama that comes with it for what i thought was the very last time.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. I was convinced I was done with that place forever.

Sharon: Well, you really embraced becoming your own man, and you’ve flourished at new hope. And now noah joining you there — that’s just the icing on the cake.

Nick: All true.

Sharon: So then help me understand why you would consider going back.

Nick: No, no, no. I’m not making any moves right now, alright? This is just two people talking about some very nonspecific ideas in some broad terms.

Sharon: Understood.

Nick: Hypothetically speaking, if I had stayed at the company, I would have been in a much better position to help protect my sister’s ceo seat. I also would have been able to do a lot more in regards to preventing my dad from pitting victoria against adam, while also supporting my mother.

Sharon: Because you are the voice of reason in the family trying to find some balance.

Nick: Well, I’ve tried my best. I’ve certainly made a lot of mistakes. But I think everybody in the family knows that I mean well and that my priorities are straight when it comes to their personal lives, as well as the company. You know, the irony is that I’m in this position of neutrality because I’ve been able to keep so much distance from the company for so long.

Sharon: Before you take this any further, I think that you just need to ask yourself one question. At this point in your life, would you feel more satisfied taking a larger role in newman or maintaining the distance that has served you so well until now?

Allie: Thank you, sir.

Noah: Allie, before we go in, I — I wanted to apologize for making you feel uncomfortable earlier. I hate that I got so worked up in front of diane.

Allie: No, no, you have nothing to apologize for.

Noah: Yes, I do. I thought that I had accepted diane being back in town. I mean, I was perfectly civil before. I-I don’t know. Something about seeing her today just… all the stuff she put my family through just came flooding back in. And she caused a lot of chaos in this town before she died. Or before she disappeared, rather. And now she’s causing even more by showing her face around here again.

Allie: Well, but you can’t really blame her for the latter, right? I mean, that’s not really her fault.

Noah: Yeah, allie, I can’t help but wonder — what makes you think she deserves a second chance when you don’t even really know what she did?

Phyllis: Let’s press the reset button here. This is — I mean, you think I’m insincere? Really? I mean, you — you know me better than anyone. Look in my eyes. Don’t you see the truth?

Jack: Yes, I look in your eyes and I see the truth. That’s not the point.

Phyllis: What am I missing?

Jack: The very root of the whole thing, why it is you acted the way you did to begin with. This isn’t new. You keep telling me about growth and maturity. Phyllis, look back over the last few years at your relationship with men. It has been a disaster.

Phyllis: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Uh, wow, that’s low.

Jack: No, I — red, listen to me. Think about it. Billy, nick, me. The last time you were with nick, you couldn’t have been happier. Things were going great. And then they went south, and you turned to me. And then just when it seemed we were gonna be together, in a matter of days you sabotaged any potential there was.

Phyllis: Because of diane. And I let it go.

Jack: I know you’re gonna try to let it go. You’ve tried to break the pattern in the past. Maybe it’s not a pattern. Maybe it’s just who you are. It just seems to me, whoever you’re with, however long you’re with them… it’s never enough.

Mariah: Hi! How’d the appointment go?

Tessa: Not like I expected.

Tessa: Well, I thought the sore throat thing was no big deal, but, um, I was wrong. My doctor said the preliminary diagnosis is vocal-chord nodules.

Mariah: What? I mean, those are really serious, aren’t they?

Tessa: Yeah. He’s sending me to a specialist for a confirmation and treatment options, but worst-case scenario is surgery.

Mariah: Oh, my god. Tessa, I am so sorry.

Tessa: [ Voice breaking ] I mean, this could take me out of the summer tour. I mean, you know how important this is to my career. But most importantly, I’m worried about my voice long term. I just — I don’t know what I’m gonna do if I can’t s–

Mariah: Okay. Slow down. Alright? You don’t even have a full diagnosis yet. So, we’ll go to the specialist, we’ll see what needs to be done to treat this, and we’ll just take it one step at a time, alright?

Tessa: Alright. I’m just — I’m — I’m — I’m really scared.

Mariah: I know. But let’s look at it this way. You know, if you need some time off or you need to get surgery or treatment of any kind… it’s better to know now for all of the future tours. Because I believe with all of my heart you are going to be singing and you are gonna be selling out tours for years and years to come. Come here.

Nick: You always know how to get right to the heart of the matter.

Sharon: That’s my job. And I think that if you look inside and you dig deep, you will find the answer. You’ll know what to do.

Nick: Easy, right?

Sharon: Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but trust your instincts. I believe in you, and I support you 100%.

Nick: Well, I really appreciate your wisdom.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Sorry. Hey. Uh, okay. Can it wait? Alright. I’m on my way. It’s my dad.

Sharon: What did he want?

Nick: He wouldn’t say. He just said that it can’t wait.

Allie: Look, noah, I get that I’m coming from a completely different place, right? I have no history with diane, and all I know is that she made this town very angry in her past. She basically admitted that herself. So, I understand why you feel so strongly about her.

Noah: Good. That’s a hard thing to forget. I can’t just pretend like nothing happened.

Allie: No, and I would never try to tell you to do that. But I do believe that forgiveness is important. I mean, look at what happened between my dad and my grandfather. It would have changed so much for all of us if my dad just found a way to reach out and forgive jack.

Noah: Yeah, your life would have been a lot different.

Allie: So different. My whole family would have been in my life from the very beginning. When my dad died, it wouldn’t just have been me by his bedside. I think without forgiveness and trust, life can be really lonely. I didn’t realize that before, but I’m starting to get it now.

Noah: Well, that is a very healthy and optimistic way to look at things.

Allie: Well, I highly recommend it.

Diane: Harrison, stay where i can see you! I love watching you play!

[ Chuckles ]

[ Breathes deeply ] It’s all I’ve ever wanted.

Diane: Thank you for understanding how much kyle means to me. He’s the biggest part of my heart. And I have ached for him every day since I left.

Allie: What exactly do you hope will happen if you do see kyle, face-to-face?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about that. Little daydreams that I have. I try to keep the hopes small so as not to tempt fate.

Allie: And what are the hopes if you dream bigger?

Diane: Then I’m his mother again. In every way. I — I’m part of his life. Part of his days. I dote on his child. We have sunday breakfast in the abbott dining room.

Allie: And everyone accepts you being there.

Diane: The family you’re part of is big and loving when they let you in. And there is no place better in the world. You’ll see. It’ll happen.

Diane: [ Breathes deeply ]

[ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Uh… you cannot mean what you just said to me.

Jack: I do mean it. Why do you constantly insist on getting in your own way? Why is it you can never fully embrace happiness, fulfillment? For you, it is — it is always about the wanting, the chase… never about actually having it.

Sally: Well, business is all about money, so I would go with the first one.

Adam: Thanks. That is what I was leaning towards. And…wow.

Sally: You like?

Adam: It is phenomenal. You are killing it with this new look. It’s understated, yet powerful.

Sally: Good, ’cause that is the exact vibe that I am going for, like I do this kind of thing every day. Get named ceo of a major media corporation in a press conference headlined by victor newman himself.

Adam: Well, get used to it.

Sally: Yeah. Well, if I can’t, I will just have to learn to fake it.

Adam: Hey, look, you don’t have to fake anything. You just have to smile and pretend like you have the biggest secret in the world, and the press will eat it up.

Sally: For you, this is familiar territory — being the man of the hour, giving speeches, fielding questions like a pro, it’s just a normal day.

Adam: Yeah, not quite. It’s a little less thrilling when it’s not your first time.

Sally: Okay, well, I won’t tell if you won’T.

Adam: It’s different now. It’s — it’s better than my previous stints running newman.

Sally: Well, for one thing, you have me.

Adam: Yes, and that has made a huge difference.

Sally: Trust me, today is going to be a turning point for both of us.

Michael: There you are. I’ve been looking all over for you. You’re not answering your phone.

Victor: Sit down. I don’t have much time. I have a press conference to go to.

Michael: Yeah, well, you’re gonna want to hear this. I found ashland and victoria.

Victor: Where are they?

Michael: New york, staying at a hotel.

Victor: So he went back to his home base.

Michael: There’s more. Ashland was spotted meeting with a high-end commercial real-estate broker.

Victor: [ Sighs ] So they’re looking for office space to start a new company.

Ashland: Good morning.

Victoria: Good morning. There’s coffee.

Ashland: Well, thank you very much. Look at you, still in your robe, getting a late start. Did you not sleep well?

Victoria: Oh, no, I slept like a baby. I just wanted to enjoy a leisurely morning. There’s no need to rush into the office.

Ashland: Ah, well, I’m — I’m glad you’re getting a chance to relax, especially after the stress of the last few months.

Victoria: Are you hungry? Do you want to order some breakfast?

Ashland: Well, actually, i was gonna ask if you wanted to go out to brunch, you know, at that cute little café we both love on the upper east side.

Victoria: Well, I guess you haven’t checked the news. The whole business world is counting down to the big press event announcing my successor.

Ashland: Actually, I did read that last night before I went to bed, but I wasn’t sure if you had any interest in watching it.

Victoria: On the contrary. I’m gonna be glued to this tablet for the duration. I would not miss one minute of it.

Jack: So that said, I really want your transition to marchetti to go smoothly.

Kyle: I am down with that. What do you need from me?

Jack: I want your thoughts on second-quarter projections, and then you’re pretty much done.

Kyle: That’s it? Seriously?

Jack: Yeah, I’ll handle the rest. My final offer, take it or leave it.

Kyle: Dad, are you sure?

Jack: I’m positive.

Kyle: You’re making this too easy for me.

Jack: You and summer are going to have your hands full wrapping up this acquisition, getting marchetti moved to the united states. The sooner you are in the ceo seat, the better for everyone.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Jack: Oh. There it is, the newman press conference will be in one hour, where victor will formally announce that adam will be taking the reins as ceo.

Kyle: Mm-hmm. Think he hired a skywriter?

Jack: Oh, there will definitely be the intended hoopla.

Kyle: Alright. Kind of ironic. You know, all this fanfare for adam as he ascends the newman throne, while over here you’re quietly shunting your son off to another division.

Jack: Oh, I seem to recall this was your idea. I am in no hurry to lose my partner at jabot.

Kyle: Sorry, you’re stuck with me. Marchetti is a jabot subsidiary.

Jack: Where you will be sole head honcho. I could not be any prouder of you.

Kyle: Thanks. I’m looking forward to the challenge and to be working with summer again. Feels like everything is coming together.

Jack: You worked hard and you earned it. And does that include diane, this “everything coming together”? I mean, I haven’t asked for a while. How are things going between the two of you? Is there a problem?

Summer: Ready to go?

Phyllis: Is it 9:00 already?

Summer: It is 9:03 to be exact.

Phyllis: Okay. I’m so slammed after my trip. I have so much work to do, and there’s a luncheon for the chamber of commerce in the ballroom, and —

Summer: Mom, you promised me that you were going to do this. I’ve already arranged it with diane.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Where are we meeting?

Summer: At the park. Neutral territory so that you can extend an olive branch.

Phyllis: Okay.

Summer: Please don’t tell me that you’re gonna back out at the last minute. You’ve got to know how important this is to me. To my whole family.

Phyllis: No, I’m — I’ll do it. Yeah, let’s do it, let’s do it. Let’s go. Oh.

Kyle: Mom and I are cool. We’ve been spending more time together.

Jack: Yeah?

Kyle: She’s been working hard to prove herself, hasn’t done anything wrong. At least not that I know of.

Jack: Well, there’s a curious way of expressing it. Wasn’t that long ago you were doing everything you could to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Kyle: Still am. Doesn’t mean I’m ready to wipe the slate clean.

Jack: Good. There is no rush. There is no deadline.

Kyle: I know. She accepts that, and we’re taking things slow.

Jack: I think you should. Deciding how much of a presence diane is gonna have in your life is a big decision, and one with lifelong implications.

Kyle: There’s a part of me that just wants to open my arms and let her all the way in and just cling to her until the wounds are healed like magic. And then I-I think back to when she was murdered. When I believed my mother was gone and never coming back. And some nights, in my room when I was finally alone, I would scream into my pillow ’cause i thought I had to be brave for everyone. And…to think about that kind of grief, at that age, it was exhausting. Exhausting. It was the most traumatic thing I’d ever been through. And to find out that it — it was all a lie inflicted on me by my own mother? Th-that — that’s not the kind of thing you get past overnight.

Jack: No, it’s not.

Kyle: She’s saying all the right things. She seems to mean them. She’s sentimental with harrison. Grateful to get to know her grandson.

Jack: But you’re having trouble trusting her completely?

Kyle: Dad, I want to, badly, but I’m wary. Because something will happen, and then I’ll wonder if it’s a warning sign. Like — like this thing with you and phyllis. And I don’t need to know details. It’s none of my business. But you admitted to summer and me that there’s a problem that ties back to my mother, and…i can’t help but wonder.

Jack: No, no, if diane is reverting to her old tricks, believe me, I will let you know. As far as this thing with phyllis and me, don’t let that change your evaluation. Look, these are two different issues.

Kyle: Okay. If you say so.

Ashland: You seem almost eager to watch the press conference.

Victoria: More like fascinated.

Ashland: And here I thought you’d be mostly irritated.

Victoria: Why? Because it’s rumored that my father might announce adam as my successor?

Ashland: Are you telling me that doesn’t bother you, not at all?

Victoria: I’m sure that my father would love it if I lost it over that and came racing back to defend my turf. I mean, it’s why he did it in the first place. Not because adam will run newman better than I will. It’s what he always does. He plays us against each other. It’s his usual move, and quite frankly, I find it tiresome. And I’m not falling for it.

Ashland: I’m just impressed that you’re so calm, so nonchalant, above it all.

Victoria: Well, I mean, come on, isn’t that why we left in the first place? So that I could break free of my father’s influence and stand strong on my own? Our patterns had just become so entrenched, and it had gotten to the point where I knew what he was gonna do before he’d even done it.

Ashland: There’s a certain satisfaction to that, being able to predict your rival’s every move. I’ve had that feeling myself from time to time.

Victoria: You know…no one’s ever gotten me the way that you do. I realized that about you when i first met you. It’s like we’re kindred spirits.

Ashland: I just wish I’d recognized that from the beginning, like you did.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] You’re a slow learner. I’ll adapt, don’t worry.

Ashland: [ Laughs ] Thank you for the effort.

Victoria: You’re worth it.

Ashland: Um…I’ll tell you what. Let me prove my value. Why don’t you order room service? I’m going to go change for the meeting, and then we will reconvene, sit right on this couch, and watch the press conference together, in case it’s a little tougher on you than you think.

Victoria: Oh, aren’t you thoughtful.

Ashland: I try.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: Vick. I’m so glad you called. Are you okay?

Victoria: I’m fine.

Adam: Well, when you’re right, you are right.

[ Sighs ]

Adam: Hmm. Much tighter ending. Got it.

Sally: [ Exhales sharply ]

Victor: Well…the moment’s almost upon us. The press is waiting to come in.

Sally: Time to get this show underway?

Adam: Actually, I would like a moment alone with my dad.

Sally: Sure thing. I will go schmooze the reporters. Take as much time as you need.

Victor: So, son, are you getting cold feet?

Adam: Ha.

Victor: Hmm?

Adam: Not at all.

Victor: Good.

Adam: I meant what I said. I plan to use my time at the helm, however long or short that is, to show you what I’m capable of, and I promise you, you will be impressed.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Now, we both want what’s best for you, right? We both want you to excel.

Adam: Oh, there’s no worries about that. Feel like my whole life has been leading me to this moment, to this opportunity, and I plan to make the most of it.

Victor: I’m banking on that, son. I’m betting on you.

Victoria: The move has gone great. Everything is happening just as I hoped.

Nick: Are you ready to tell us where you are?

Victoria: I’m surprised you haven’t heard. I assumed dad would have sussed it out by now.

Nick: If he knows, he hasn’t said anything to me.

Victoria: We’re in new york, visiting ashland’s favorite haunts.

Nick: I should’ve guessed that.

Victoria: I gather that you won’t be making it to our brother’s coronation.

Nick: So you heard about that.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] I assume that adam is thrilled. All of his dreams are coming true.

Nick: Well, you’ll have to ask him. We — we haven’t talked about it.

Victoria: Well, please be sure to give him my congratulations when you see him, since you’re the only one in the family that I’m communicating with.

Nick: Vick, call mom. Alright? You know how much she worries.

Victoria: I know. I will when the time is right. I have to go now, okay?

Nick: Are you gonna watch the press conference? I hear they’re gonna live-stream it.

Victoria: Well, I doubt that ashland and I will have time. We’re meeting with some big investors to see if they’ll bankroll our new venture.

Nick: Are these connections of ashland’s?

Victoria: They’re mine, mostly.

Nick: Does that mean your plan is to set up a company that will compete against newman?

Victoria: Nicholas, I didn’t call you to talk about my future business. I just wanted to check in and let you know that I’m okay. I should get going now. I got to get ready for this meeting. I’ll talk to you soon, okay? Bye.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Diane: Hello, summer. Don’t you look lovely. I love that top on you. And, phyllis, welcome back. I hope you had a nice time in georgia with your son and granddaughter.

Phyllis: I did. It was lovely. Thank you for asking.

Diane: Yeah, so what did you ladies want to meet about? Who would like to begin?

Summer: Well, while mom was out of town, she had a chance to do some thinking. Right?

Phyllis: Right. Um…well, I was able to center myself and gain perspective.

Diane: Really? That’s great. And so quickly. It took me years.

Phyllis: Ha, well, I’m a fast learner, and I mean, you… had a lot to work through.

Diane: I don’t know about that, because you strike me as someone with so many issues weighing you down.

Phyllis: Oh, do I? Really? Well, not really. No, no, I don’T. But what I realized is I just want to keep this calm…inside of me, and, um…I don’t want anger and resentment to fester and rot away inside. Like it’s done to you. You made it clear that you’re sticking in town. You’re gonna be at family events and such, so…yeah. I would just like to put the past where it needs to be — behind us. Starting today.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Are you saying this is a fresh start for the two of us?

Phyllis: Well, I’m never gonna forget the things you’ve done to me.

Summer: Mom, but you can — you can forgive.

Diane: Right, the way so many people in town have forgiven you over the years for all the things you’ve done.

Phyllis: See? This is what I’m going to do. I’m not going to dwell on the things that you did to me. So just consider this a pact of non-aggression, a ceasefire, a detente.

Summer: Maybe something a little less war-like?

Phyllis: A truce.

Diane: Well, that is wonderful to hear. Thank you, phyllis, for sharing that with me. You just made my day. Hi, I’m denise.

Diane: I know this couldn’t have been easy for you, phyllis.

Summer: Well, you know, when you showed up with no warning, it brought up a lot of painful, unresolved issues for everyone.

Diane: Oh, I’m well aware, because pretty much everywhere i turn, people are there to remind me of the damage I’ve done. Not that I’m complaining. I know that I deserve every bit of their rage.

Phyllis: Oh, yeah, you most definitely do.

Diane: Which is why I find it so impressive that you found a way to let it go and make peace with me. It must be so freeing.

Phyllis: It must be freeing for you to know that you can cross one person off the long list you have of people who don’t want you in town.

Diane: Well, it does mean a great deal to me, especially, as you pointed out, we’re part of the same extended family, and it’s best for everyone if we get alonG.

Phyllis: Yeah, it is. You know, nobody has any reason to give you a second chance in this town. But I will. You know, it’s unfortunate for you, ’cause the probability of people giving you dirty looks and just the outright hostility that you will experience by staying in genoa city, that must be very difficult, but you know what, diane? I…I’m not gonna be a part of that. Because I will not put my daughter through that. My daughter and her husband. I will not make my daughter uncomfortable. I will not make her choose sides ever.

Diane: Excellent point. And while I realize you’re not doing this for me, I do appreciate the effort. Thank you.

Phyllis: Well, you’re welcome.

Diane: You know, I’m just really happy for you, phyllis, that you’ve reached this level of serenity and maturity.

[ Chuckles ] Comes as a complete surprise. Oh, I hope you don’t take that the wrong way.

Phyllis: Oh, absolutely not. Let’s go, alright?

Summer: Okay. Thank you for coming, diane.

Diane: Of course.

Summer: Shall we?

Phyllis: Sure, let’s go.

Victor: Thank you all for coming. Today I have an important announcement to make. As you know, newman enterprises has expanded enormously during the last year. We not only merged with locke communications group, but we acquired chancellor communications and newman media. All this was done under the very capable leadership of my daughter victoria. She’s done a wonderful job. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, she decided to step away. And today I’m naming my son adam as new chief executive officer of newman enterprises, effective immediately. As some of you may know, adam has been intimately acquainted with the various departments of this company, but only someone who gathered the knowledge that he did on wall street and someone who graduated from harvard business school was able to, many times, step in and steer this enormous ship whenever I asked him to. He’s exactly what we need right now. He’s bold, he’s innovative, he’s right for the job. Please welcome my son adam.

Ashland: I believe that last comment was aimed at you.

Victoria: Oh, no doubt. Did you notice how my father didn’t mention your name, not even once? It’s as if you’ve ceased to exist.

Ashland: I’m sure he wishes that was the case.

Adam: Well, I could not be more pleased to be taking the helm of the company now. First things first, I have to give due credit to my sister for having the foresight to pull together the resources so we could thrive during these challenging times. Our talented executive team, cutting-edge technology, and amazing portfolio of intellectual property, and our unmatched global reach. My mission will be to integrate those assets to maximize our profit potential. At the same time, keeping with the values and the philosophy of our founder, my father, victor newman, who has always been at the heart of our company’s success.

Ashland: “My sister went on a shopping spree, but I’m the only one who knows what to do with all the stuff.” And look at him, he’s still kissing up to victor, even after he’s gotten the gig. Haven’t you had enough of this?

Victoria: Almost.

Adam: …Because I am leaving newman media in the very capable hands of my former coo and now ceo, sally spectra. And we’re available to take any questions you have.

Victoria: Okay, I am done. And you know what? My father deserves everything that adam and sally are gonna put him through. Let’s go. Let’s get to our meeting, shall we?

Adam: Well, we settled on ceo and not “division president” partly because it had been my title, but mainly because of the level of responsibility that it takes to run a media entity of that size. Something that I have every confidence ms. Spectra will handle with her usual aplomb.

Nick: Can I see you outside? I heard from victoria.

will continue. D a woman’s right to choice, her right to make intensely personal decisions from her doctor, free from interference from politics. To reaffirm basic principles of equality, and reinforced the fundamental right of privacy, the right of each of us to choose how to live our lives. Now with roe gone, let’s be very clear: The health and life of women in this nation are now at risK. As chairman and ranking member of the senate judiciary committee, as vice president and now as president of the united states, I’ve studied this case carefully. I’ve overseen more supreme court confirmations than anyone today. Where this case was always discussed. I believe roe V. Wade was the correct decision. As a matter of constitutional law and application of the fundamental right to privacy and liberty in matters of family and personal autonomy. It was a decision on a complex matter, that drew a careful balance between a woman’s right to choose earlier in her pregnancy the states ability to regulate later in her pregnancy. A broad consensus that most americans of faith and backgrounds found acceptable, and had been the law of the land for most of the lifetime of americans today. And it was a constitutional principle upheld by justices appointed by democrat and republican presidents alike. Roe V. Wade was a 7-2 decision, written by a justice, appointed by a republican president, richard nixon. In the five decades that followed roe V. Wade, justices appointed by republican presidents, from eisenhower, nixon, reagan, and george W. Bush were among the justices that voted to uphold the principles set forth in roe V. Wade. It was three justices named by one president, donald trump, in the core of today’s decision to up end the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country. Make no mistake, this decision is a culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law. It’s a realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error by the supreme court in my view. The court has done what it has never done before: Expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many americans that had already been recognized. The court’s decision to do so will have real and immediate consequences. State laws banning abortion are automatically taking effect today, jeopardizing the health of millions of women, some without exceptions. So extreme that the women can be punished for protecting their health. So extreme that women and girls were forced to bear their rapist’s child. A child of a consequence — it just stuns me. So extreme that doctors will be criminalized for fulfilling their duty to care. Imagine having a young woman having to carry a child of incest — as a consequence of incest with no option. Too often the casE. The poor women are going to be hit the hardest. It is cruel. In fact, the court laid out state laws criminalizing abortion that go back to the 1800s as a rational. The court literally taking america back 150 yearS. This is a sad day for the country, in my vieW. But it doesn’t mean that the fight is over. Let me be very clear and unambiguous: The only way we can secure a woman’s right to choose in the balance that existed is for congress to restore the protections of roe V. Wade as federal law. No executive action from the president can do that. And if congress, as it appears, lacks the votes to do that now, voters need to make their voices heard. This fall you must elect more senators and representatives who will codify a woman’s right to choose into federal law once agaiN. Elect more state leaders to protect this right at the local leveL. We need to restore the protections of roe as law of the land. We need to elect officials who will do that. This fall roe is on the ballot. Personal freedoms are on the ballot. The right to privacy, liberty, equality, they’re all on the ballot. Until then, I will do all in my power to protect a woman’s right in states where they will face the consequences of today’s decision. While the court’s decision cast a dark shadow over a large swath of the land, many states in this country still recognize a woman’s right to choose. So if a woman lives in a state that restricts abortion, the supreme court’s decision does not prevent her from traveling from her home state to the state that allows it. It does not prevent a doctor in that state from treating her. As the attorney general has made clear, women must remain free to travel safely to another state to seek care they need. My administration will defend that bedrock right. If any state or local official, high or low, tries to interfere with a woman’s exercise of her basic right to travel, i will do everything in my power to fight that deeply unamerican attack. My administration will also protect a woman’s access to medications that are approved by the F.D.A., The F.D.A., Like contraception, which is essential for preventive health care. If aprestone, which the F.D.A. Approved 20 years ago to safely end early pregnancies and is used to treat miscarriages — some states are saying they will try to ban or severely restrect access to this medications. But they’re looking to block the mail or search a person’s medicine cabinet or control a woman’s actions by tracking data on an app are wrong and extreme and out of touch with the majority of the americans. The american medical association, the american college of obstetricians and gon gon cologys, they say by limiting access to these medicines, morality will climb in america. That’s what they say. Today I’m directing the department of health and human services to take steps to ensure these critical medications are available to the fullest extent possible. And the politicians cannot interfere in the decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor. My administration will remain vigilant as the implications of this decision play out. I’ve warned about how this decision risks the broader right to privacy for everyone. That’s because roe recognized the fundamental right to privacy. That has served as a basis for so many more rights that have come to take — we’ve come to take for granted, that are ingrained in the fabric of this country. The right to make the best decisions for your health. The right to use birth control. A married couple in the privacy of their bedroom, for god’s sakE. The right to marry the person you love. Justice thomas said as much today. He explicitly called to reconsider the right of marriage equality, the right of couples to make their choices on contraception. This extreme and dangerous path the court is now taking us on. Let me close with two points: First, I call on everyone, no matter how deeply they care about this decision, to keep all protests peaceful. Peaceful. Peaceful. No intimidation. Violence is never acceptable. Threats and intimidation are not speech. We must stand against violence in any form, regardless of your rationale. Second, I know so many of us are frustrated and disillusioned that the court has taken something away that is so fundamental. I know so many women are now going to face incredibly difficult sessions. I hear you. I support you. I stand with you. The consequences and the consensus of the american people, core principles of, quote,, quote,ofequality, liberty, dignity, and the stability of the rule of law demand that roe should not have been overturned. With this decision a conservative majority of the supreme court shows how extreme it is, how far removed they are from the majority of this country. They made the united states an outlier among developed nations of the world, but this decision must not be the final word. My administration will use all of its appropriate, lawful powers, but congress must act. And with your vote, you can act. You can have the final word. This is not over. Thank you very much. [Reporters. (Yelling) reporter yelling]O’connell: The president pledging to do everything in his power to protect women’s health. He says, let’s be clear, the health and life of women are now at risK. Let’s bring in nancy cordes. Nancy, what actions can the president take?

Reporter: We only heard him give one actual specific in that speecH. He says he is going to be directing the department of health and human services that abortion pills are more widely available, particularly to women who live in states where abortion is now illegal. What he did not say is whether he is going to push the F.D.A. To drop restrictions that currently limit the number of pharmacies that can provide those abortion pills. He didn’t announce any new executive orderS. It doesn’t mean those won’t happen in the days to come, but he didn’t lay out any specific plan right now to do things like issue travel vouchers to women so if they need to go a thousand miles to get an abortion, it can be a little cheaper for theM. He didn’t talk about giving service members time off if they live in a state that doesn’t allow abortions and they need to travel. So there are going to be a lot of questions on the minds of abortion rights activists about just how far he is willing to go personally. He says he is going to do everything he can. He called this ruling an extreme ideology and a tragic error, but we are still waiting for some of the details to be filled in.

O’connell: And, nancy, the president also making the case that this decision is not the final word. And he said congress should act, they could act, but he also said with your vote you can act. And laying out the case that this will be a central issue in the upcoming mid-term lacks elections.

Reporter: Very explicitly laying out a mid-term election message, saying that the only way to secure women’s rights is for congress to make the right to abortion a federal law. He said we don’t have the votes to do that right now, democrats don’t, so if people care about that, they need to vote in november and elect pro-abortion rights candidates at every level, at the state level and at the national level. That is an argument you’re already hearing today, norah, not just from the president of the united states but from the speaker of the house and virtually every democrat that has spoken so far.

O’connell: Nancy cordes at the white house. I want to bring in jan crawford because you heard him mention clarence thomas’ singular descent, in which he said he want to reconsider marriage equality. And they were saying this should go further.

Justice thomas has been the most conservative justice on the supreme court. He is the one who is willing to completely disregard precedent on a number of cases where other conservative justices are not. When you look at the majority opinion, which has five justices supporting the view, thomas is the only one. The other four say no, it does not. It could not be more clear. The right to contraception and the right to same-sex marriage — abortion is different because it involves a fetal life. There is an extensive analysis bulked up from the initial draft we saw where the majority is saying, no, we don’t agree with that. Thomas is only writing for himself.

O’donnell: Jan crawford. I want to bring in major garrett, who is there at the supreme court, which is a fortress with security, but also a number of protests.

Reporter: Norah, I’ve talked to protestors on both sides. They both use the same phrase: “This is an earthquake.” If so, this judicial earthquake has created a falt line right here in front of the supreme court. Those interested in this opinion have come in much larger numbers since 10:10 this morning. Some are curiosity-seekers, but some are deeply emotionally involved in this issue. I see tears on both sides, those who long opposed abortion rights, tears of gratitude, and those who support abortion rights, bitter tears about what the spreamplet supreme court has done. Americans coming in front of the supreme court, if you read the opinion today, the supreme court said don’t come here anymore. The supreme court has nothing more to say on abortion. Because they no longer recognize it as a constitutional right worthy of commentary. Go back to your states. But they’re coming here in larger numbers.

O’donnell: The president also calling for peaceful protests after the supreme court has struck down roe V. Wade. The president saying no intimidation or violence is ever acceptable. Jack: I do know there’s a better chance of her keeping her word if you don’t provoke her — something you’re very good at, something you seem to relish.

Diane: On my honor — and i do believe I have some now — i have no intention of kicking that hornets’ nest. Why would I?

Jack: Is that a real question?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’m just thrilled that the woman has volunteered to back off. And as you’ve said, it brings the number down of people in this town who are out for my blood.

Jack: Excuse me, please.

Victoria: Well, I think that that meeting went rather well, don’t you?

Ashland: Extremely well, yes.

Victoria: I got the feeling that we’re gonna get some positive responses to our proposal.

Ashland: I just love the way the presentation went, the way we were playing off of each other’s ideas. I just — I can’t wait to be running a company with you again.

Billy: I know, I’m sorry, I’m a little bit late. Mwah. Just having a hard time getting motivated this morning.

Jill: Well, now, why would that be? The launch party was a tremendous success. I’ve been getting congratulatory messages all morning.

Billy: Yeah, Mother, don’t take this the wrong way, but there’s more to life than work.

Jill: Yeah, Billy, I understand that. But would you please tell me why you’re so disgruntled?

Billy: Can I at least just get a coffee, please, first?

Jill: Could you multi-task?

Billy: Fine, I got some disturbing news from Victoria right before the launch. And I promised Lily that I was not gonna let it affect the big night, and I didn’t, but I’m having a hard time letting it go.

Jill: Okay, so what happened?

Billy: Victoria came to me and informed me that she is — she’s starting over with Ashland. She’s leaving town. She’s leaving her job. She’s leaving her family. She’s leaving it all behind.

Jill: Why would they want to start over?

Billy: Do you not know?

Jill: Well, evidently not.

Billy: Wow. Okay, so no one told you. Uh…well, with everything else that Ashland has done, he was lying about having cancer.

Jill: What?

Billy: Yes. And he did it to deceive Victoria into marrying him so that then he could go and steal newman/locke after the merger. The guy was playing the long game.

Jill: Oh, my god, that’s — that’s just —

Billy: Deceitful, disgusting. It’s all those things, but it’s Ashland lLcke, so what else is new?

Jill: Okay, so who figured out what he was up to and blew the whistle?

Billy: Well, that is a very long and complicated story, one that I will share with you another time. But it’s suffice to say that the Newmans are doing everything they could to get rid of the guy, but it backfired and Victoria accepted all his sad tears and forgave him, and now she’s expecting me to let her take the kids to live with them, wherever they’re going. And because she’s not telling me, she’s being secretive, so Victor doesn’t interfere. And so I’m sorry if I’m a little, you know, out of sorts.

Jill: No, that’s okay. Ashland is a vile human being. I expected a little bit better of Victoria, but, honey, I mean, if — it’s her life. If she’s willing to throw it away on a man who’s not worthy of her, I — c’est la vie.

Billy: “C’est la vie”? How do you say that? You don’t expect me to sit here and just let it happen.

Jill: Oh, you just stop it. I know what you’re about to say. This is no longer your battle to fight.

Billy: Oh, god, you sound exactly like Lily.

Jill: Well, I take that as a compliment.

Billy: How do you not expect me to be concerned about this? This directly affects the wellbeing of my kids.

Jill: Well, you used them as an excuse the last time, when you were involved with that Jesse Gaines debacle and you were trying to stop Victoria’s wedding. Lily was right to call you out. There’s no way on earth that Victoria would put her children in danger. Look at me. You’ve got to let this go, Billy, and also, if you mess this up with Lily, I will never forgive you.

Devon: Good morning.

Lily: Good morning. Hello.

Devon: Hey.

Lily: How’s it going? I don’t know about you, but I’m still on a high from last night.

Nate: Mm, Chancellor-Winters’ first official business day is now underway.

Lily: I know, look at us. The three of us, working down the hall from each other in our newly merged company. Oh, speaking of which, do you like your offices? ‘Cause I oversaw the design, so I hope it’s all to your liking.

Devon: Um…I hate to put a damper on your day, but there actually is a problem.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Amanda: Summer, hi.

Summer: Amanda, hi. How are you?

Amanda: I — I kind of feel like I should be asking you that question. Are you okay?

Summer: Oh, you know, Mom. What can I say?

Amanda: Oh. Any word on when she might be home?

Summer: Nothing solid, but these text messages of hers are a master class in evasion. I tried to call her, but she won’t pick up, and I want to keep her on the loop on certain decisions that Kyle and I are making, but not like this. And when I ask her what her plans are —

Amanda: She sends you shrug emojis and cheerful greetings.

Summer: So you’ve been getting them, too.

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Summer: She is pulling the same stuff with Daniel — being vague about how long she’ll be visiting, and when he tries to get her to open up, she gets all moody. It’s gotten to the point where he and his daughter Lucy are walking on eggshells around her. And it’s — it’s so weird. I mean, she loves that kid.

Amanda: Do you think that we should be worried?

Summer: I sure am.

Michael: I can’t get over it — you and I, together in the same room.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Michael: No, no, no, just it’s such a rare occurrence. I mean, here I am working very reasonable hours, courtesy of — wait for it — Victor, while your career is busier than ever. Oh, the irony.

Lauren: You know, you at least know where I am. I’m not in some Peruvian jail somewhere, okay?

Nikki: Oh, hello, you two.

Michael: Nikki, you look lovely.

Lauren: How are you?

Nikki: I’ve been better.

Lauren: Yeah, I heard that Victoria left with Ashland. You and Victor must be devastated.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Yes, it’s been very difficult. I woke up this morning determined to not think about her departure. In fact, I’m so glad I ran into you, Michael.

Michael: Of course you are. But why?

Nikki: I intend to direct all of my rage and frustration into a worthy target — Diane Jenkins. And you’re just the person to help me do it.

Billy: Look, you’re right, okay? I know that I’ve got to let it go, just like I promised Lily.

Jill: You thought I’d be a more sympathetic ear, didn’t you?

Billy: Yeah, I did.

Jill: Mm-hmm.

Billy: I thought you would be a little bit more supportive because, you know, you’re my mother, you’re supposed to be.

Jill: Not mindlessly supportive, Billy.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Jill: Look, with all the exciting things you have to focus on now, I can see that something is bothering you. How are you feeling about all the changes at the company?

Billy: How are you feeling?

Jill: Well, I thought I’d made myself very clear in my speech at the launch event.

Billy: Yeah, no, it was a great speech. It was heartfelt, it was touching, it was perfect.

Jill: Well, thank you, I think.

Billy: But it is the end of an era. I mean, you ran Chancellor by yourself for a very long time.

Jill: Yeah, I did. And Lily’s doing a bang-up job of bringing the company into a brand-new era.

Billy: She is. She’s doing great. I couldn’t be more proud of her.

Jill: Yeah, and it’s very brilliant the way she’s expanding both Katherine and Neil’s visions.

Billy: Yes, but, like you said, it is a major upheaval, so it’s got to be a little disconcerting for you.

Jill: The way it is for you, honey?

Lily: Wait, what’s — what’s wrong? Is there an issue with your office?

Devon: Yeah, the size is an issue. I’m gonna have to get used to it.

Lily: The si– wait, our offices are the same size. I mean, down to the millimeter. I made sure of it. But I can switch with you if you want.

Devon: Yeah, I think that’s a good idea. We should switch.

Lily: Okay. That’s fine.

Devon: I can’t believe you can’t tell when I’m messing with you. I’m joking completely. The office is fine. It’s perfect. Did an amazing job, as usual.

Lily: Oh, my god. Wow. Very funny.

Devon: I just need to hang some pictures and make it personal, I’ll be good to go.

Lily: Okay, never tell a joke again. Um, Nate, do you like your office?

Nate: Okay, are you kidding me? It’s spectacular.

Devon: Yeah, compared to that little hole in the wall they had you in at Memorial.

Nate: There is no comparison. Sweeping views of the city, beautiful new furniture. There’s even room for a putting machine.

Lily: A putting machine? You don’t golf.

Nate: I know, I’m just saying. Add in my very own espresso maker and some fancy snacks — I’m in heaven. Truly, this is a whole new world for me.

Lily: Well, good. Get used to it, celebrity COO, ’cause I got to tell you, the press loved you.

Imani: I’ll say. Everyone’s buzzing about the sexy, sophisticated addition to the executive suite.

Lily: Sexy? I didn’t see sexy. You saw sexy?

Imani: [ Chuckles ] You must be focusing on the stuffy business press your PR team sends over. If you do a deep dive into the gossip sites that covered our party, the “s” word definitely comes up.

Summer: I’m pretty sure that something went down between her and Jack.

Amanda: And you don’t know for certain?

Summer: It seemed like things were going well for them on the romantic front, but then Kyle and I walked in on this tense moment between the two of them. It was obvious that they’d been arguing.

Amanda: Did you ask Phyllis about this?

Summer: Yeah, she kept on insisting that it was a disagreement, “no big deal.”

Amanda: I’m guessing that you don’t buy that.

Summer: No way. How much do you know about what happened?

Amanda: Well, she did mention her disagreement with Jack.

Summer: Did it involve Diane? My mom hates her with a passion. Those two have so much history, and all of it is bad.

Amanda: Yeah, I gathered that from our conversation.

Summer: She even asked me to convince Kyle to reject her, which I wasn’t about to do. I mean, Kyle’s relationship with Diane is his own decision.

Amanda: I can’t help wondering if all of this has something to do with her sudden trip out of town. She was so excited to plan the launch party, and then, poof, she disappears. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Abby, she did an excellent job. The party turned out great, but I don’t know, I can’t help but be a little bit shocked.

Summer: The trip was actually my fault. I reached out to Daniel and I persuaded him to ask Mom to come for a visit. I was afraid that she and Diane were headed for a major showdown.

Diane: [ Laughs ]

Kyle: No, Harrison, make sure all the ducks get some corn. Have linda show you.

[ Laughs ] Yeah, that’s the way.

Diane: Yes. Oh, my gosh, he is so cute. I just can’t get enough of that little face.

Kyle: Oh, his nanny says the same thing.

Diane: Mm. Thank you for letting me know what time you’d be here so I could watch him play.

Kyle: Yeah, well, I know how much you enjoy it.

Diane: I do, so much. Although I almost slept through the alarm. I just tossed and turned all night.

Kyle: How come?

Diane: Oh, I had a bad dream, and then you know how it is when you wake up at 3:00 A.M., all your worst fears start ballooning.

Kyle: Ah. That sounds intense.

Diane: Mm.

Kyle: Remember what it was about?

Diane: My dream? You really want to hear it? Uh, okay. I dreamt that the deal to purchase Marchetti fell through and that you and Summer and that cute little boy moved back to Milan.

Kyle: Don’t worry about that. Acquisition is right on track.

Diane: Well, that’s a relief. Thank you for putting my mind at ease. Which brings me to another thing that has me up all night. Um…Kyle, I need to ask you a favor. A big one.

Kyle: What is it?

Diane: [ Sighs ] I was hoping that when the dust settles with Marchetti, that you could help me find a job around here.

Amanda: I am sure that you are right about Phyllis and Diane clashing, and finding a way to cool things down for a bit, it was a really good idea.

Summer: It won’t last, though. Sending her off for some quality time with daniel, it’s just postponing the inevitable.

Amanda: Well, I’m sorry, really, I don’t know what I can do to help. I don’t know how to engage Phyllis in a meaningful conversation about Diane when she is actively dodging all forms of communication.

Summer: Is there a cute little emoji for “call me back or I’ll haunt your dreams”?

Amanda: Listen, I promise that when she gets back, I will corner you, and maybe she’ll be ready to unload then.

Summer: I’m glad to hear that you’re willing to help, because if this little trip doesn’t provide the reset that I’m hoping for, I have a plan.

Amanda: Tell me.

Summer: I want to put together a team to save my mom from herself and to keep her and Diane from escalating this thing into a full-blown war. Are you up for being a peace broker?

Amanda: Count me in.

Summer: Thank you.

Michael: So what is it you had in mind?

Nikki: Please do us all a favor and look into Diane’s activities in Los Angeles.

Michael: Like what, her work, her friends?

Nikki: I don’t really care. There must be something that shows she came back to town with evil intentions, that she’s not the angel she’s trying to convince people she’s become.

Lauren: Mm, Michael’s probably the worst person for the job.

Nikki: Oh, no, he’s not. He uncovered the evidence that showed Ashland to be the snake that he is. Why not do the same thing for Diane?

Lauren: Because he’s one of the few people who isn’t horrified that she’s back in town.

Michael: Sitting right here, ladies.

Lauren: In fact, he couldn’t wait to call me when he saw fresh from the grave and then bought her a drink. Didn’t you, sweetie?

Michael: Oh, so you can see me.

Lauren: And now they’re palling around together again.

Nikki: I don’t believe it. Michael is too smart for that.

Michael: Invisible again.

Lauren: Oh, believe me, we could never miss you.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Lauren:  Excuse me. Oh, it’s Summer. Something with work. Alright, well, you two seem like you have a lot to discuss.

Michael: No, no, no. Look, no, I want it on record that you cut our date short for work.

Lauren: Alright. Duly noted. Thank you. Love you.

Michael: Love you more.

Nikki: Bye.

Michael: Kind of.

Lauren: Ha-ha.

Nikki: I am appalled that you are spending time with Diane after everything she’s done. I need you to do something about her, and quickly.

Billy: I couldn’t be more proud of Lily than I am, truly. I mean, it’s so impressive to see what she’s done with this merger, even more impressive than what Victoria did with Newman/Locke. And she didn’t have to con anyone to get it done.

Jill: Oh, please, let’s not get into all that again.

Billy: Look, I am not gonna screw things up with Lily, and I am 100% on board with everything that’s happening at Chancellor-Winters and I am focused on being the best COO I can possibly be.

Jill: I believe you mean that.

Billy: Good.

Jill: But with everything that’s so positive you have to focus on, I can still see that you’re unhappy, sweetie. So I’m gonna sit here and just listen, okay? And I’m gonna try to be the supportive mother you were hoping I would be when you brought up Victoria.

Billy: I would love to tell you everything. I would love to be an open book, but if I do, you got to promise me that this stays between us.

Jill: Billy, this stays between us. You have my word. It’s covered under the mother-son privilege.

Nate: I hope neither of you is upset that I revealed more about our plans than you wanted me to.

Devon: I mean, what matters is that it worked out and we got great coverage from it, so…

Lily: Yeah, look, you followed your gut, and it worked out, so…

Imani: Sometimes relying on your instinct is better than playing it safe. I found that to be the case both personally and professionally.

Nate: I just want to make sure no one feels I stepped on anyone’s toes.

Devon: Well, you did, but as I’ve said many times already, it’s just a little bump in the road and hopefully there won’t be too many more of those, right?

Nate: Thanks for being gracious.

Devon: Yeah, not a problem, man.

Lily: Alright, well, let’s get down to work. Um…I think we should chat about the marketing plan for the 50 new podcasts that we’re launching. The PR team’s being inundated with interview requests, and honestly, I think based off of our pre-subscription numbers, we can definitely raise our advertising rates.

Devon: Well, I suppose we can thank  Nate for that, since he detailed the rollout.

Lily: Well, I mean, I think that your team did a great job with the promos and with developing the podcasts themselves.

Imani: Mm-hmm, you got to have the right product.

Nate: Amen to that.

Lily: Yeah, I think we can chalk up this success to great family teamwork. Good job, everyone.

Imani: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: It’s been amazing to watch Lily, to watch her work, to put this whole thing together, and to help where I can, and to, you know, to see her working with her brother Devon and Nate — it’s a family and it’s a vibe and it’s beautiful. But there’s a little disconnect for me there. It’s like there’s something missing.

Jill: Do you have any idea where this is coming from?

Billy: No, I don’t. And it’s — like you said, I mean, everything’s great. It should be fine, right? But I’m just feeling a little bit restless. There’s this feeling like there’s something big out there for me, and I’m not sure what it is or — or, you know, where it’s gonna come from.

Jill: Well, I can see why this would be concerning for you.

Billy: It’s a little bit of a distraction, you know? I’m trying hard not to let it get to me.

Jill: Okay, I have a theory, if you would like to hear it.

Billy: Yes. Let’s hear it.

Jill: Alright, now don’t get mad, alright? But I’ve seen this behavior in you before. Are you sure you’re not self-sabotaging, Billy? ‘Cause I’ve seen you on top of the world, and then if you fail, you give yourself permission to fall back on your old ways.

Kyle: You want me to give you a job?

Diane: No, not give, just help. But not if it’s too much trouble.

Kyle: I don’t have many connections in the real-estate biz.

Diane: Kyle, I’m not trying to put you on the spot or take advantage. It’s quite the opposite. If everything goes well and you continue to want me to stay here, you can’t keep supporting me indefinitely.

Kyle: Really, it’s no problem.

Diane: No, no, no, you have been more than generous paying my bill at the Athletic Club, and I-I really appreciate it. But I need to pay my own way, and more than that, I-I-I need a career, a purpose.

Kyle: Well, how long would it take for you to get your real-estate license here?

Diane: Oh, real estate is just something I fell into. It was never a passion, like architecture.

Kyle: You want to get back into that?

Diane: Oh, no, no, no, I think that ship has sailed.

Kyle: Seriously? You were at the top of your field.

Diane: Yes, many, many, many years ago.

Kyle: So?

Diane: Kyle, I’m a realist. Even if I was interested, I’ve been out of it for so long that it would be almost impossible for me to step back in.

Kyle: Even with all your experience?

Diane: Well, for one thing, it is a very technical field, and I haven’t kept up with building codes or materials or software, and oh, my gosh, everything these days is about 3-d imaging. And even if I did have a firm interested in me, I would be competing against architects that are young and hungry, and I could go on, but it’s just too depressing.

Kyle: Sounds like you’ve given this a lot of thought.

Diane: I have.

Kyle: It’s got to be hard giving up on a dream you once had.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Well, life goes on. But seeing you and summer working so closely and doing something you love, and then, I don’t know, getting a peek at the launch party for Chancellor-Winters, maybe — maybe it’s being around all these family businesses and the people that are so devoted to their success. It — it’s got me thinking that it’s time to fully embrace life here in genoa city. And I know what I want to do.

Kyle: You do?

Diane: Yes. Back in LA, I started taking courses in communication, working toward a certificate in public relations, and I loved it.

Kyle: Why PR?

Diane: Well, I’ve always admired the way publicists handle difficult situations and personalities, such as myself.

Kyle: Mm-hmm. Like back in your modeling days.

Diane: Oh, I was a holy terror.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] Well, I guess this is the part where I say, “I find that hard to believe” and I try to keep a straight face.

Diane: Don’t strain yourself.

Kyle: [ Laughs ] Well, anyway.

Diane: Anyway, while taking classes in branding and crisis management, I realized that these jobs are a lot about reinvention. Figuring out a way to turn around a bad image or to get the public refocused on positive qualities. And that is something I know I could excel at.

Billy: No, Mom, I’m not self-sabotaging. Trust me, I’ve got no desire to go back to being the Abbott family screw-up.

Jill: Oh, good, good.

Billy: And I really don’t see this as a regression. This is me just trying to find my place in the world. And it’s exciting.

Jill: Believe it or not, I get that.

Billy: You do?

Jill: Yeah, I do. After hearing all the compliments at the launch party, I stayed up really late and binged your podcast.

Billy: Okay.

Jill: No, no, no, I am so damn proud of you. You’re fearless. It’s very brave what you’re doing. You’re digging deep, you’re being honest, and then you’re turning around and sharing it with the world. But, sweetie, I can’t help worrying about that because it’s like ripping scabs off old wounds, and that could be really, really dangerous for a person like you.

Billy: You mean a recovering addict like me. You can say it. To be honest, these podcasts have been really helpful. They’ve been good for me. I finish them, and it’s actually a cathartic experience.

Jill: But then why the restlessness?

Billy: I haven’t figured that part out yet. But I am determined to keep searching until I do.

Imani: Save some of that sugar for me.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you followed me here.

Imani: I did.

Nate: Okay. Why?

Imani: I just wanted to make sure I didn’t get you in trouble by pushing you to be yourself at the launch — even though I think I was right.

Nate: Well, I acted on my own. It was my call. And I don’t regret it.

Imani: Great. Then I will take some credit for your success. The speech clearly raised your visibility.

Nate: I don’t see that as a plus.

Imani: Why not?

Nate: Because I didn’t want to overshadow Lily and Devon. And I could’ve done without your comments back at the office about the benefits of going with your gut versus playing it safe, which seemed like a veiled dig at Devon.

Imani: Well, I’m not one to stifle my opinions. You generated a lot of buzz for the company, and to me, that was worth the risk.

Nate: Pretty sure Devon thinks otherwise, even though he hasn’t said it.

Imani: I hope you won’t let him discourage you.

Kyle: I can’t promise anything. There are obvious issues with getting you a job at jabot.

Diane: Say no more. I don’t expect you to hand me a job. And I would, of course, want to be an asset to any firm that hired me. And it needn’t be at Jabot. It’s just that you know so many more business people in town. I thought maybe someone might mention something that’s right up my alley.

Kyle: I’ll give it some thought.

Diane: And while we’re on the subject of my pariah status —

Kyle: Look, I don’t —

Diane: No, no, no, Kyle. I know that there aren’t a lot of people in this town that are dying to associate with me. At least not yet. But I want you to know that I intend to earn the respect of as many of them as I can. If only just to make you and Harrison proud. I know that he would want the best for his deedee.

Kyle: Well, that makes two of us. And for the record, I think it’s impressive you want to pursue a new career. I’ll keep my ear to the ground.

Diane: Thanks. That’s all I can ask.

Lauren: Hi. I didn’t realize I was meeting with both of you. I thought this was about work.

Summer: Kyle and I do have a lot to discuss with you regarding Marchetti, but this is about Mom.

Lauren: Oh, is Phyllis okay? I know she left in a hurry to go see Daniel.

Summer: I orchestrated that visit so that there wouldn’t be blood in the streets.

Amanda: On account of Diane. Summer is trying to diffuse things.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Well, talk about a lost cause.

Summer: Please don’t say that.

Lauren: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be flip. I can see how concerned you are. It’s just that I was there for the original battles between the two of them, and I cannot imagine that Phyllis will ever cool down where Diane is concerned.

Summer: Exactly, but this getaway has bought us some time.

Lauren: To do what?

Summer: I was thinking that when Mom gets back to Genoa City that we could team up and try to keep the peace.

Lauren: You are ambitious.

Amanda: It’s not that hopeless, is it?

Lauren: Oh, really? The team that you would have to assemble to keep the peace would be damn busy.

Summer: Do you know something that we don’t?

Lauren: Diane is on my list, too. I have been keeping tabs on her since her return, and she has been lighting fires everywhere. Including igniting one with your grandmother. I just saw Nikki, and she is on a mission to get that woman out of town.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Summer: If there’s one person Diane won’t want to tangle with, it’s my grandmother.

Lauren: Not if she’s smart.

Amanda: Well, with all of these enemies gunning for Diane, maybe we’ll get lucky. Maybe she’ll feel the heat and she’ll head back to la before Phyllis gets home.

Summer: I want to create peace for everyone, not drive Diane away from Kyle unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

Lauren: That is a very difficult position to be in. And I think it’s very noble that you are considering your husband’s feelings as well.

Summer: I love him.

Lauren: I know you do. And somehow Michael has a soft spot for her as well, which I find inexplicable.

Amanda: You are really not a neutral party in this peace-keeping effort, are you?

Lauren: [ Laughs ] No. I am far more on the Phyllis/Nikki side. And this town would be better without Diane in it. But knowing how she operates, you, too, may have to pick a side and decide to get some distance between Kyle and his mother.

Nate: Devon and I have a long history. We’re cousins. Sometimes we’re rivals. Other times, we’re best friends. You don’t need to worry about me feeling stifled by a little healthy competition.

Imani: I’m not worried. I’m just observing the dynamic. I’m impressed with your business instinct, and I would hate to see your spirit squashed.

Nate: Well, I appreciate your support.

Imani: We should look out for each other. We’re both new in this arena. Personally, I get worried that I’m being held back by my sister’s watchful eye. Something I suspect you should look out for with Devon.

Nate: I don’t think I’d go that far.

Imani: I’m not saying it’s conscious on his part, but it’s just a complicated family dynamic. Well, anyway, I need to get back to the office.

Nate: Okay. I’ll see you later.

Imani: Think about what I said, Nate.

Billy: Hey, there.

Lily: Hello.

Billy: Mwah. You still riding high after last night?

Lily: Oh, yeah, I am on top of the world. Although I do realize that we have to dig deep in order to make good on the promises that we made last night.

Billy: Including everything Nate shared in his speech.

Lily: Yeah, people are very curious about our podcasts. I really hope that Jill’s as excited as everybody else.

Billy: She’s thrilled. Honestly, she couldn’t be more excited about the launch and all the accolades that are pouring in. She also made it very clear that I’d better not screw things up with her star CEO.

Lily: Why would she say that?

Billy: I don’t know, just a little joke. [ Sighs ] You’re right. [ Chuckles ] I don’t want to do that.

Lily: Do what?

Billy: I shared some things with my mother that I didn’t want to burden you with. But I don’t want to keep secrets from you.

Michael: By now…it ought to be clear that I’m more willing than most to forgive Diane.

Nikki: Michael.

Michael: More tea?

Nikki: Please don’t change the subject.

Michael: I really don’t know what I can do to help.

Nikki: You can investigate her. How was she able to live under an alias all these years? Did she pay taxes? Maybe the authorities could get her on tax evasion. She used a fake name. Did she also use a fake social security number? I mean, there’s got to be some kind of fraud there. Identity theft, impersonating an actual human being.

Michael: You’re good at this. You ought to look into getting your own PI license.

Nikki: You are the legal expert. On retainer — a very handsome retainer, I might add — for us. So there’s got to be something you can use to bring her up on charges.

Michael: Nikki, even if I were to uncover something shady, I do not have standing to bring charges in California. I’m not in law enforcement there or here. I stepped down from being the district attorney, remember? And FYI, tax evasion is a federal crime.

Nikki: Why are you making excuses? You were willing to risk your life to bring Ashland down. Why the hell are you protecting Diane?

Lily: Secrets? Should I be worried?

Billy: Oh, I don’t —

[ Telephone rings ]

Lily: Sorry, this has been ringing nonstop all day. Hi, it’s Lily. Oh, my god, I’m so sorry. Um…okay. Uh, you know what? Just hang tight. I’ll be right there. Okay, thank you.

Billy: Is everything okay?

Lily: Uh, yeah, I — I did an interview with a Chicago paper and they sent a photographer to take pictures, and I completely forgot. I have to go.

Billy: Okay, go.

Lily: But I want to hear what you were gonna say ’cause I’m freaking out right now.

Billy: It’s okay.

Lily: You can tell me.

Billy: There’s nothing to freak out about. Really, I’m fine. And I did not mean to make it sound ominous.

Lily: Are you sure?

Billy: I am sure.

Lily: Positive?

Billy: Positive. This is your time to shine, okay? Go make us proud.

Lily: Okay.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Summer: Harrison’s having a snack in the kitchen. He seems pretty hungry after your trip to the park.

Kyle: He had a nice visit with his deedee.

Summer: Good.

Kyle: You seem bummed. What’s up?

Summer: [ Sighs ] You know how worried I’ve been about our moms and trying to keep things as calm as possible between them.

Kyle: Right, and?

Summer: Now I’m hearing that my grandmother is also after Diane. According to Lauren, she is hell-bent on getting your mother to leave town.

Kyle: Thanks for the heads up.

Summer: I didn’t mean to upset you.

Kyle: It’s not you, babe. I just don’t want you getting in the middle of this. Hell, I don’t want to deal with it either. My mother is doing her best to turn her life around, and no one will cut her any slack. I just wish everyone would back off, give her a little breathing room.

Summer: [ Sighs ] That’s easier said than done. Seems like everyone we know has history with Diane and strong opinions to match.

Nikki: Whose side are you on anyway?

Michael: No one’s. I’m neutral.

Nikki: No, you’re not. You’re trying to protect her.

Michael: Years ago, everyone in this town wanted Diane Jenkins to get the hell out. Well, you got your wish. She disappeared, and no one was wrongfully convicted for her death. Look, she lived alone in exile, missing her son. I think she paid for her crimes.

Nikki: Well, I disagree. I don’t think relocating to sunny LA is a proper punishment for her misdeeds. I mean, the fact that she can waltz right back into our lives is outrageous. Even Jack has softened his stance on her. It boggles my mind.

Michael: Does that just kill you? That — that Diane is succeeding in making amends, that she slowly but surely is gaining people’s trust?

Nikki: Yes, it does. And she will never earn my trust. That woman is nothing but trouble, and I refuse to sit back and let her wreak havoc.

Michael: Would you be so adamantly opposed to peaceful coexistence with Diane if you had succeeded in ridding your family of Ashland?

Nikki: One has nothing to do with the other.

Michael: One wonders.

Nikki: Well, don’t wonder. Diane’s crimes are worthy of their own level of vitriol.

Michael: [ Sighs ] Fine. I will agree to doing a deep dive into her time away, if only to prove to the nay-sayers that Diane has changed. That she deserves another chance.

Nikki: And what if your investigation proves otherwise? What then? Are you gonna try to cover up for your old pal? Or are you gonna let her get what she deserves?

Summer: He probably just got caught up with work. You’re nervous.

Kyle: Well, I wouldn’t put it quite like that, but this is a big deal. I just hope he understands. Even though he said he’d be okay with it, saying it and meaning it are two different things. Hey.

Jack: Hey.

Kyle: Thanks for coming home to meet with us.

Jack: No problem at all. Sorry I’m a little late. I gather from your text and from the look on both of your faces, you have some important information to share.

Kyle: We do. Not that the acquisition is essentially a done deal, I’ve decided to leave my job as co-ceo of jabot and take on the role of ceo at marchetti.

Diane: There he is.

Michael: There you are.

Diane: Hello, michael. My treat for inviting me to take a stroll in the park.

Michael: Well, I will definitely accept this awesome free lemonade. But just so you know, I don’t generally require a gift when I’m reaching out to friends.

Diane: Do you know how many people in this town — outside of my son — actually ask to spend time with me?

Michael: I can count them on one hand?

Diane: Try one finger.

Michael: Ah.

Diane: Yeah, so enjoy.

Michael: If you insist.

Diane: It’s so wonderful to have you back in my life. I’m — I’m glad we’re friends again.

Michael: I feel the same way. Which is why I thought it was only fair that I warn you about something.

Diane: Uh-oh, my mind is scrolling through the possibilities. It’s not about kyle, is it?

Michael: No, no, no, no. It’s nikki. She wants to run you out of town.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Oh, that. Well, that’s not a secret. She has made it perfectly clear that she wants me gone.

Michael: No, don’t underestimate the depth of her determination. Off the record, nikki wants to get her hands on any and all dirt that may have gone on in your years in los angeles. And she asked me to do the digging.

Diane: [ Exhales sharply ] I’m not surprised. Well, how did you handle the request?

Michael: I told her I would do a deep dive, only to prove that there was nothing incriminating, that I was gonna show everyone that you deserve another chance.

Diane: Well, I appreciate that. Thank you.

Michael: Hey, I’m in your corner. I’m rooting for you. So, um…I think it would be best for both of us if you told me the truth here and now. Did you break any laws or pull any of your old stunts while you were out west, supposedly rehabilitating yourself?

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Devon: Hey.

Elena: Hey, neighbor.

Devon: Look who it is. Hold that thought.

Elena: Was it something i said?

Devon: No, I’m sorry. You can come in. I, uh…I was heading to the office and realized I don’t have my tablet.

Elena: Oh. Well, where did you use it last?

Devon: I don’t know. That is a great question. But it’s got to be around here somewhere.

Elena: I’ll help you look.

Devon: Thank you. I appreciate that. How — how’s everything been at the hospital? I haven’t had a chance to talk to you in a minute.

Elena: I know. Honestly, it has been hectic. I’ve been working a lot of late hours lately. But I love my job and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Devon: Well, that’s good. That means you’re doing what you’re meant to do in life.

Elena: Yeah, I couldn’t agree with you more. You know, actually, I am particularly satisfied with my job today. Aha! Found it.

Devon: Ay!

Elena: Like finding change in a couch cushion.

Devon: Well, except this has our company’s plans for world domination on it.

Elena: Oh.

Devon: Does that phone call have something to do with you being in a good mood?

Amanda: There you are. You’re late. Your coffee’s cold.

Imani: I don’t give a damn about coffee right now. I just got off the phone with my father.

Amanda: Oh, no. What’s wrong?

Imani: It’s mom.

Imani: Mom had a stroke earlier today.

Amanda: Oh, my god, was she okay? Was she able to call 911?

Imani: My dad was there when it happened, so he got her straight to the hospital.

Amanda: Okay.

Imani: And she’s in stable condition now.

Amanda: Okay. Alright, well, let’s go. We — we can leave right now. I’ll drive.

Imani: Wait, wait, we can’T. They’re not allowing any visitors besides my dad right now, so we’ll have to wait. But he said that he will keep me posted.

Amanda: Okay, well, make sure that he calls you every hour on the hour with an update.

Imani: Yes, he assured me that she’s in excellent hands, and I believe him because he wouldn’t settle for less than the best, okay?

Amanda: Yeah, yeah, of course. And I’m grateful for that. I just — I think I’m just a little shocked.

Imani: I’m shaken up, too. After mom’s last incident, she regrouped and she kept following the doctor’s instructions, but I just couldn’t stop worrying.

Amanda: I remember how upset you were. And what did I do? I told you to stop jumping to the worst possible conclusion. I think it’s just my default setting. I’m just stoic and just I keep pushing forward. I keep thinking about the positive. Nothing — none of that — prevented this, so here we are, and…

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry. Okay, I’m sorry if I — if i dismissed or I downplayed your feelings.

Imani: No, no, there’s nothing to be sorry about. Okay, it’s not your fault. Optimism is a pretty good way to handle bad news.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Imani: This time, while mom’s recovering, we’ll stay positive together. Okay?

Amanda: Yeah.

Kyle: Dad, what do you think?

Jack: Well, I’m not surprised by your decision. I…I have to be honest, I’m a bit disappointed I won’t be working side-by-side with you any longer. I mean, don’t get me wrong, i understand that this move makes all the sense in the world with angelina stepping down at marchetti and summer agreeing to be creative director.

[ Sighs ] I have enjoyed working with you. It’s meant the world to me. I’m gonna miss it. I think we’ve grown closer because of it.

Kyle: We definitely have. I’ll miss it, too. You taught me everything I know about running a company.

Jack: We had a good run.

Kyle: We did. But we’ll still have business to discuss now that marchetti is a part of jabot. It just means we need to find more ways to spend time together outside of work. You know, lots of abbott family breakfasts and playtime in the park with harrison.

Jack: Yeah, sounds like a plan. Hey, pl– don’t get me wrong, i am thrilled for both of you. I know this is the end of one chapter, but the beginning of a thrilling new one for you, and i have been telling you all along this is your opportunity to spread your wings and show the world what you can do. I cannot wait to watch you soar.

Diane: I walked a very straight line the entire time i lived in los angeles. I promise you.

Michael: No, no, no, I’m talking compared to, like, other regular upright citizens, not compared to your own past behavior, because that would be a pretty low bar to clear.

Diane: Mm, you should know.

Michael: Mm. Yeah, I would. And as someone who is well acquainted with that shadowy area between fact and fiction, i understand how easy it is to tiptoe over that line and then justify why you did it.

Diane: Mm-hmm. But you also are aware that people can change. I mean, look at yourself. You went from lawyer to prisoner and back again.

Michael: You’re missing one of my stints behind bars if you count my wrongful imprisonment in a peruvian jail.

Diane: What?

Michael: Yeah, long story short, I was working on a case for victor, and I upset the wrong person.

Diane: Oh, my god, that sounds awful.

Michael: It was an unpleasant few weeks, but I managed to get out of it unscathed.

Diane: A few weeks in jail? Michael, you need to tell me all about this.

Michael: We’ll have to order much stronger drinks for that occasion. Um…

[ Clears throat ] But the reason I bring up my unfortunate trip to peru is i think you need to be warned that when I investigate someone, I am extremely accurate and thorough.

Diane: Mm-hmm. I am well aware of that. And you can dig around at my professional, personal, and financial history as taylor jenson. I have nothing to hide.

Michael: Oh, I hope that’s true, taylor.

Diane: Mm-hmm. Actually, it was the quietest time of my life, because it had to be. I mean, first of all, I was on the run. I couldn’t draw any unwanted attention. And secondly, my soul could not bear anymore bad behavior. I needed to turn things around. I needed to prove to myself that I was worthy of being in kyle’s life, and now I’m ready to prove that to him. Hi, I’m nancy.

Kyle: Summer and I are diving right in at marchetti. Already pursuing avenues to expand and grow.

Jack: Just so exciting. I assume phyllis is as happy as I am about this news.

Summer: Mom actually doesn’t know yet. I spoke with her briefly earlier today, but I didn’t get a chance to fully catch her up on everything. I’m gonna do that when she gets back from savannah.

Jack: Any idea when that might be?

Summer: Soon, evidently. And you should know that she claims she’s now willing to let go of her past hatred of diane so that we can all move forward. You don’t believe it. Not sure that I do either.

Jack: I-I hope it’s true. Certainly have my doubts.

Summer: Jack, I wish that you trusted me enough to just tell me what happened between you and my mom before she left town.

Jack: Summer, honey, this is not about trust. There — there is no subterfuge here.

Summer: But I keep asking because clearly something went on that’s more than what you or my mom is willing to say, and i have a feeling that it has something to do with diane.

Jack: You know everything you need to know about it. Yes, it does tie back to diane, but you just said yourself phyllis is determined to turn over a new leaf, to let go of her hate and anger toward diane, and that’s a good thing. You should not be worrying about this. Look, phyllis, diane, and I all want the two of you to be happy. That’s where our focus should be right now.

Summer: But more information can help me keep the peace.

Jack: You know what? I got somewhere I have to be. We’ll talk some more later, and you can fill me in on your marchetti ideas.

Kyle: Looking forward to it.

Jack: See you later.

Summer: Did you hear what i just heard?

Kyle: That depends. What do you think you just heard?

Summer: When I asked jack about my mom, he was still being evasive. It’s like he gave just enough information to seem like he was answering the question without actually answering it. He was just talking around it. Obviously there is something that he and my mom want to hide from us. I need to find out what that is.

Elena: Thank you so much. I really appreciate it, and I am sure nate will too.

Nate: Oh, it’s my pleasure. I’ll see you around.

Elena: I didn’t know that you would be home.

Nate: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: But I am certainly glad you are.

Nate: Well, I knew you’d be headed home from the hospital, so I figured why don’t we grab a bite to eat before I head back to the office.

Elena: Oh, is this part of your promise to spend more time together by working around my schedule?

Nate: Sure is. What do you think?

Elena: I think it’s very sweet of you. But you couldn’t have come at a more perfect time because I have something to tell you.

Nate: Well, judging by your face, I’m guessing I’m gonna like this. Bring it on.

Elena: I was asked to speak at a medical convention next week. It’s a little last minute because they just added the panel for surgeons, but my boss already gave me the go-ahead, so I’m just gonna get my shifts covered at the hospital.

Nate: That is fantastic. Congratulations.

Elena: Thank you. And there’s more. The convention is in hawaii, so I was thinking, if you could take a little time off, too, maybe we could go there together and make this a sort of work/mini vacation. Something I think we both need.

Nate: Uh, yeah, I’m not so sure that’s a good idea.

Michael: I have one word of advice for you — patience.

Diane: That’s unusually succinct for you.

Michael: Look, you can’t force everyone to come around, but if you keep being the best version of yourself, they’ll have to acknowledge eventually that you’ve changed. Whether they’ll admit it to your face or not.

Diane: How long did it take you to convince everyone you’d evolved?

Michael: That’s beside the point.

Diane: So what is the point?

Michael: Anything is possible. Look, I reinvented myself. It was a long and hard journey. But it was worth it. And now I have the life of my dreams.

Diane: I would exactly put “thrown into a south american jail for doing victor newman’s dirty work” on my vision board, but, hey, to each his own.

Michael: No, no, alright. My job keeps my life interesting. I was talking more about my personal life. I love lauren now more than i did the day I married her.

Diane: Aww. That is disturbingly sweet.

Michael: [ Laughs ]

Diane: But aspirational. I might not give up on that whole “happily ever after” thing after all.

Michael: You mean you didn’t leave a trail of broken hearts behind you in los angeles?

Diane: Are you asking as michael, my friend, or as the guy that’s investigating me?

Michael: Is it possible that you could tell michael the friend so he could tell michael the consigliere to the newmans?

Diane: There is nothing to tell. I was working on myself. In real-estate jargon, I was a fixer-upper. I didn’t have time or energy for romance.

Michael: [ Chuckles ] I think you should put yourself back on the market, ’cause now that you’ve finished your “remodel,” someone’s bound to be interested.

Jack: Hello, you two.

Diane: Oh, hello, jack. What a surprise to see you in the park during a work day.

Jack: I’m just taking a little walk to clear my head. How about you?

Diane: Michael and I are having a chat.

Jack: Seem to have settled right back into your friendship.

Michael: I was as surprised as the next guy to learn that diane was still alive, but I did tell her that I was glad you were still with us, huh?

[ Chuckles ] And I meant it. I find that I enjoy her company more than ever. If more people were open-minded enough to really listen to her, perhaps they’d feel the same way. If you have copd,

Imani: Even though we can’t be with mom right now, my dad said that when she’s feeling up to it, we can call, and he’ll put us on speaker so she can hear our voices, okay?

Amanda: Okay, okay. Yeah, I appreciate that.

[ Sighs ] I think I’m just — I’m just still really anxious to see her in person, you know? Do you know anything else about her medical care, how long she’ll be in the hospital, any of that?

Imani: She’ll have to be there for at least another few days, but if things progress like we hope, they’ll discharge her and then they’ll send her home.

Amanda: [ Sighs ]

Imani: We’re — we’re really fortunate that we’re able to afford in-home caregivers and physical therapists.

Amanda: Yeah. No, you’re right. And she’ll be happier there, you know, in her own bed, in her home, with her husband.

Imani: And when we learn more today, we can plan to visit her, okay?

Amanda: Yeah.

Imani: I know this is a lot to take in.

Amanda: I’m okay. I’m okay. I’m just…

Imani: She’s gonna be fine, okay? And we’ll see her soon.

Amanda: Yeah.

[ Sighs ] I think I’m just trying to wrap my head around this still, you know? I just — I waited so long to find my mom. And now I find her, and her medical condition is just getting worse and worse and… I keep saying that we’re gonna spend more time together, and just it’s hitting me, you know, how precious — how precious life is.

Imani: You know, I’m thinking that there might be something you can do about that. Maybe you can go and visit mom for a while. You can spend some quality time with her, make it count.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Kyle: I know you’re frustrated, but our parents aren’t obligated to share every detail of their life. I mean, we have so many good things happening right now. I hate to see you tying yourself up in knots over this.

Summer: All I am trying to do is keep the conflict to a minimum. And that is a lot harder to do if I don’t know what’s actually going on.

Kyle: My dad just said there’s nothing to worry about. And phyllis said that she’s going to make an effort where my mother is concerned, which is more than I ever expected to hear.

Summer: Yeah, me too. I was pretty surprised when she told me she’d had this epiphany. And it happened awfully fast.

Kyle: I know, I’m not naive. I know it’s gonna take a lot of time and energy to create some semblance of civility between our mothers, but for the moment, it looks like everyone wants to move forward.

Summer: Given the way my mother was acting before she left town and what daniel has told me, I am not buying that she has miraculously sorted through all of her anger. Kyle, I am worried that she is taking this time to lay low and reassess and that she’s gonna come back home with a plan of attack.

Jack: I just came from seeing kyle and summer at the house. You might want to pay a visit. They have some exciting news.

Diane: Oh, I’m intrigued. I will head over there. I really appreciate you sharing that with me.

Jack: Oh, I’m sure he would’ve told you himself soon.

Diane: Michael. Thank you for everything, and i will see you soon.

Michael: Jack. Uh…perhaps my comment about being open-minded was unnecessarily aimed at you. I kind of enjoyed seeing you be so polite to diane. Not shutting her out of kyle’s life.

Jack: I have no intention of interfering with my son’s decision to reconnect with his mother.

Michael: Is there any chance of you coming around to the idea that diane really has changed?

Jack: I’m willing to admit it might be possible, but I hope it’s true, for kyle’s sake. I guess time will tell.

Phyllis: How did you know i was there?

Michael: My “phyllis-dar” is well honed. If you’re within a 50-yard radius of me, I know it.

Phyllis: Oh. That’s odd.

Michael: So is eavesdropping. So what the hell’s going on? I thought you were supposed to be in savannah.

Phyllis: I was. Now I am back.

Michael: And you’re really following diane around and spying on her?

Phyllis: [ Scoffs ] Well, when you say it like that, it’s so dramatic. No, I was just, you know, looking around, getting the lay of the land, if you will.

Michael: Nothing’s changed since you left.

Phyllis: Oh, I beg to differ. A lot has changed. Yeah, some of my close, personal friends have seemed to, mm, uh, forgive diane for her past deeds.

Michael: For pete’s sake, will you stop lurking around in the shrubbery and acting like some crazed stalker from an “I love lucy” episode and maybe, maybe face the fact that diane has changed, like you have claimed that you have more than once.

Phyllis: Oh, wait a second. Diane has not changed, and i will never, ever forgive what she did to me and some people i love.

Michael: Phyllis, have you looked in the mirror lately? Your past is littered with mines.

Phyllis: Those were faux-pas.

Michael: Fa– who are you talking to? Do you want me to start listing your oppsy-daisies?

Phyllis: Okay, listen, i didn’t fake my death, okay? And I didn’t come back to life in a secretive, manipulative way like diane did. I mean, the way that she entered jack’s life, oh, that just screams “I’ve changed.” Seriously? Are you expecting me to be less than skeptical?

Michael: No, no, no! I have no — I have no problem with your skepticism. It is completely understandable. Jack has plenty of questions still, but he is not letting himself be consumed with anger, which is the wise choice for his own sanity and for his relationship with kyle. I mean, have you… have you really thought about what’s at risk in this cyclone of — of fury that you’re in the eye of?

Phyllis: Let me tell you something. I know exactly — exactly what i stand to lose because of diane jenkins. Okay?

[ Sighs ]

Michael: Well, you obviously haven’t thought this strategy through, or you wouldn’t be acting this way. So I’m gonna spell it out for you. Your daughter is married to diane’s son. And kyle seems to be on the path of forgiveness, which means that summer and diane — who, by the way, is not acting like some crazy, vengeful person — will be in constant contact.

Phyllis: With my daughter, yes. That’s my worst nightmare.

Michael: Do you really want to put your daughter in the horrible position of having to choose between her husband and you?

Kyle: Look, I hope you’re wrong about phyllis plotting against my mother.

Summer: I do, too, but —

[ Doorbell rings ]

[ Sighs ]

Kyle: Hey. Come in.

Diane: Thanks. Hi.

Summer: Hi.

Diane: I — I hope I’m not intruding, but I ran into jack at the park, and he mentioned you had some news.

Kyle: Yes, we do. Um…the acquisition is about to become official, so I’ve decided to leave my job at jabot and become the ceo of marchetti.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] That’s incredible. I’m thrilled for you.

Kyle: Thank you.

Diane: Oh, for both of you.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Kyle: What’s up?

Summer: Um…just a distribution hiccup that I need to deal with. Even with all of these exciting things happening, I still got to keep a close eye on the day-to-day. I will catch up with you later.

Kyle: Mm.

Diane: Bye. Oh. Congratulations.

Elena: Okay, hear me out. We could both work during the day and then the nights would be ours. Sandy beaches, romantic dinners, a hotel room overlooking the ocean.

Nate: That definitely sounds enticing, but the timing is rough with the launch of the new company.

Elena: I thought that might be a concern, but I talked to devon and he doesn’t have a problem with you going.

Nate: Wait, what? You — you talked to devon about this already?

Elena: Well, I didn’t plan on it, but we ran into each other in the hall, and I got a call about the trip while we were talking, so he asked me what was going on and I told him. And in that moment, I thought it would be amazing if you could come, so I asked devon how he felt about it and he said he wouldn’t mind if you worked remotely.

Nate: I really wish you would’ve talked to me first before you went to devon with this.

Imani: Mom could probably use both of us by her side right now, but if one of us needed to stay longer to help and comfort her, I think it should be you.

Amanda: Me? She has been a part of your entire life.

Imani: Yeah, that’s my point. I’ve had all these years with her. You want to make up for last time, and this is your chance. Like you said, you can’t take a single day for granted.

Amanda: Yeah, in my heart, I-I want to go, I want to stay for as long as I can.

[ Sighs ] But…

Imani: You’re worried about leaving town right after the merger.

Amanda: Yeah, I mean, I’m lead counsel. I have so much going on.

[ Sighs ] I’ll — I’ll do day visits. That should — that should be fine.

Imani: I mean, you definitely could, but it wouldn’t be the same as being there and spending quality time with her. I know it would mean as much to her as it would to you. And as far as work goes, I can handle whatever issues come up while you’re gone. And if I need you, I know where to find you.

Amanda: Okay. I’ll — I’ll think about it.

Elena: Like I said, it wasn’t planned. But devon was literally right there when I got the call, so i figured it wouldn’t be a problem to at least ask if it was possible for you to come with me to hawaii. But obviously you disagree.

Nate: I just think that was a conversation we should’ve had before bringing anyone else into it. Look, I’m in a new role now at a new company in a new field, trying to prove myself. I’m working hard to be taken seriously. A lot of people are watching to see if I am up to the task.

Elena: And you really think working remotely for a few days is gonna make you look bad?

Nate: Yes, I am trying to be as professional as possible. And even though we’re close to my cousin, it’s not exactly cool to have my girlfriend ask the ceo “can I go on a trip.” If I want to request time off, i should be the one who does it.

Elena: Okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to overstep.

Nate: [ Sighs ] Alright, I’m sorry. I understand. Look, I’m just trying to get you to understand where I’m coming from. I don’t feel comfortable leaving the company we just launched to go on a vacation so soon. But it doesn’t mean I’m not proud of you for getting this opportunity. I think you’re gonna be one of the best speakers out there.

Elena: It just sucks that our jobs keep coming in the middle of us being there for each other’s big events.

Nate: Mm.

Elena: I ju misstd your launch. And now you’re gonna miss this trip.

Nate: Maybe we should blame our families for raising us with good work ethics.

Elena: Yeah. What were they thinking?

Nate: And I look forward to us getting away at some point. No work, all vacation, pure indulgence. As soon as the time is right.

Summer: What’s with all the mystery? Why didn’t you want me to tell anyone else?

Phyllis: Well, I wanted alone time with you, that’s all. So what did you want to tell me? What news do you have for me?

Summer: Well, we haven’t had a chance to discuss the marchetti deal in a while. Turns out, it’s going through.

Phyllis: Wow. Wow! You’re gonna be in genoa city indefinitely.

Summer: Yeah. We’re coming home for good.

Phyllis: That is amazing, summer. I am so excited.

Summer: Thanks, mom. And kyle is taking over as ceo of marchetti, so we’ll be working together again.

Phyllis: That is just fantastic. So what did jack say? He must’ve been excited.

Summer: He was great about it, very generous and gracious.

Phyllis: Oh, that’s jack. Yeah, that’s really great. He just wants the best for you and kyle. As I do.

Summer: Thanks, mom.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Awesome. Okay, so, uh, what’s going on here? What did I miss? Anything exciting? How’s harrison and how’s jack, diane?

Summer: Everyone’s great. There’s harmony within the abbott family.

Phyllis: Oh, I want nothing more than harmony within the abbott family.

Summer: To be honest, mom, you are the one that I’m worried about. I’m afraid that you are going to disturb that peace. Maybe even try to wreck it. And if that’s the case, I’m flat-out warning you — don’T.

Amanda: I’m kind of tempted to go and see my mom right now, but I’m thinking that I can just go for a short time now, and then I can go for a longer time maybe a little later.

Devon: You can do whatever you want. Why do you want to wait for later, though?

Amanda: Well, there — there’s just so much going on at work with the chancellor-winters launch and everything.

Devon: That’s — that’s not a problem. You know we have a whole legal team we can rely on. It’s fine. I appreciate your dedication, but, I mean, I’m sure you’d be available if we really needed you, right?

Amanda: Yeah, no, of course i would.

Devon: Okay.

Amanda: You really think i should go?

Devon: No, I know you should go because family comes first.

Amanda: Family first.

Devon: Yeah.

Elena: Oh, thank you so much for covering for me last minute. I am so glad my patients are gonna be in your hands. I owe you one. And I will definitely bring you a cool souvenir, and nothing quick from the airport.

[ Chuckles ] No, no, nate can’t make it. He’s busy with work. I wish he could come. But I will be alone in hawaii by myself.

Diane: You’re going to be sensational at this job.

Diane: I can’t tell you how much it means to me to share this time with you. I — I don’t want to miss another meaningful moment of your life. Ever. [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Wow, listen to you. You’re warning me. Okay. Well, um…I meant everything I said to you on the phone. There is nothing that I would like more than to put this hostility with diane behind me. It’s not gonna be easy, but I’m willing to do it. Because I realize all that anger inside is not healthy for me.

Summer: Okay, very zen of you, mom.

Phyllis: Yes, I’m very zen. Very zen. So what about jack? Is he putting this anger behind him?

Summer: I mean, I know that it’s a struggle for him, but he’s doing it for kyle, which i find admirable.

Phyllis: I find that admirable, too. Jack is a great guy.

Summer: I have a question. I still don’t know what exactly happened between the two of you before you left town. All I got out of you is that you screwed up, but then you backpedaled from that. And I haven’t been able to get jack to open up either, no matter how many times I try. Why can’t I just get a straight answer?

Phyllis: Because you’re digging where there’s nothing to be found.

Summer: That’s exactly what jack said.

Phyllis: Good. I’m glad that’s what jack said. Good. Believe him. Believe me. We’re all gonna hit the reset button. That’s what we’re gonna do. No harm, no foul.

Summer: That’s really all you want?

Phyllis: Yes, that’s all i want.

Victor: [ Laughs ] Why would you think that? Hmm?

Adam: Come on, dad. We both know why you appointed me ceo. It has little to do with my abilities and it has everything to do with victoria.

Nick: So how you doing?

Nikki: I’d be better if victoria would return my calls. Have you heard from her?

Nick: Not a word. Last time I saw her, though, she said she was determined to make this move without any interference.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] She really has turned her back on the family. And I’m sure ashland is praising her for cutting us out of her life.

Nick: Well, she can’t cut us out completely, right? I mean, her children are away at boarding school, but genoa city will always be their home.

Nikki: You’re right. That means she must have told billy where she was going.

Nick: And considering how this is gonna affect billy’s kids, I highly doubt that billy’s gonna be okay with this arrangement.

Lily: Well, ’cause I’m still riding on a high from last night. It was so great to have jill there, giving her blessing to the merger. I mean, it was icing on the cake.

Billy: Speaking of jill, we haven’t talked about my conversation that I had with her.

Lily: Yes. You told me that there was something you had to tell me that might upset me, so do you want to share?

Billy: Sure. So, like I said, there is nothing to worry about. And first of all, I want to tell you that my mother is fully on board with our business plans. On top of that, she actually listened to my podcast, at least the one that’s in my own voice.

Lily: Really? That’s amazing.

Billy: Yeah. She’s a fan. She told me that she thinks I’m brave.

Lily: Well, listen, I’m not surprised that she likes it. I mean, you’re being honest and genuine and people respond to that kind of emotion. Have you seen how many more subscribers you have now, too? I think, you know, you found your voice, and people like what they’re hearing.

Billy: Yeah. Maybe I should do a podcast on this.

Lily: On what?

Billy: Well, you know, when someone gets a level of success, whether it’s big, small, whatever it may be, people crowd around them, pat you on the back, tell you how great you are, and it feels good and you get to thank them all.

Lily: So the satisfaction you feel when you achieve your goals.

Billy: Yeah, but there’s a downside to that at times, ’cause all it takes is one person to tell you that you suck and that’s all you hear. That’s all you remember.

Lily: Who told you you sucked?

Billy: Actually my mother. That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. After singing my praises, she warned me that I could be self-sabotaging again.

Nikki: Victoria is one of the smartest people I know, but i don’t even recognize her anymore. I mean, she is giving up everything she has ever wanted for this lying, conniving bastard.

Nick: There’s just no way this works out well for her.

Nikki: Well, your father is counting on that. He thinks that ashland could slip and show his hand again and finally victoria would see that he is just a manipulative man and will never be able to love her the way she needs. And then her heart will be broken for good.

Nick: Then what?

Nikki: What do you mean?

Nick: I mean, what if victoria is so ashamed by her choices that she refuses to seek help from the people who love and care about her the most?

Nikki: If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

Nick: Well, I can tell you this, dad choosing to replace victoria with adam might be more than vick can handle.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] I know. The only reason I went along with that is because I’m just desperate to snap her out of this daze.

[ Sighs ] It was even my idea to step down from co-ceo so that adam could have sole control of the company.

Nick: I hear you. I mean, I’m willing to do whatever it takes, too.

Nikki: I’m not as confident as your father is about victoria’s response. I mean, instead of bring her home, it could drive her away for good.

Adam: There’s no way that you would simply let victoria walk away from the family, fly off with ashland locke to who knows where, doing god knows what. No, this — this is a message. This job is what victoria has always wanted, and now you’re just handing it over to me. I’m the last person she would ever want to sit in this chair because she knows I would have no problem dismantling her signature accomplishments if it did not align with my vision for the company. My very presence here is a jolt to her ego, it’s a slap in the face to bring her back to reality.

Victor: I always knew you were a very smart boy. But you cannot predict her reaction.

Adam: Why — why are we even doing this dance? Why are you even bothering denying it? Look, I don’t care why I’m suddenly ceo. I will play my part… better than you ever imagined. Why is l’oréal hyaluronic acid the #1 serum?

Adam: It was a smart move. Using the black sheep as bait to bring victoria home. Hey, most people in my shoes would be insulted.

Victor: But not you.

Adam: Gives me a chance to prove to you that I should be in charge of this company, and this company runs more smoothly without victoria and the three-ring circus that constantly surrounds her.

Victor: Now, don’t you think it’s a little unfair to judge someone when they’re going through a rough patch?

Adam: She has no problem doing it to me.

Victor: Mm.

Adam: But, hey, I digress. You’re a man that looks at his options from every angle, so I’m sure you’ve considered the possibility that this move won’t work.

Victor: I have.

Adam: But even if it does succeed, I plan to dazzle you right out of the gate.

Victor: Whoa.

Adam: By doing such a good job that you will reconsider your strategy.

Victor: And you’ll do such a good job that I will make sure that you stay in this position, right?

Victor: Even though victoria may return.

Adam: Wilder things have happened.

Victor: But you’re forgetting, son, that you once sat in that chair. You didn’t do a good job.

Nick: Last time I saw vick, she was in her office, packing up all her things, getting ready to leave.

Nikki: How did that go?

Nick: At first, she thought i was there to try to talk her out of her decision, but I just told her that I didn’t want her to take off with all this animosity and anger between us.

Nikki: Well, that was very generous of you.

Nick: I needed to be completely honest with her if i had any hopes of salvaging our relationship. I told her I didn’t understand why she was doing what she was doing, but we’ve always gone out of our way to have each other’s backs, even when we were at odds with the rest of the family. And I told her that I still have hers, no matter what.

Nikki: And she believed you?

Nick: Yeah. I just needed her to know that she’s got someone in her corner that she can turn to if things don’t turn out exactly the way she wants. I didn’t say it exactly like that, but I think she understood what I meant.

Nikki: You think you got through to her?

Nick: Yeah, I do. She could tell I was sincere. But, mom, she’s very sure that this is the right path for her and that she and ashland are gonna go off and have this amazing life together, far away from her family. We’re just gonna have to let it play out.

Nikki: Not quite yet. I have another avenue I need to explore.

Lily: I mean, I knew that you were going through something, but I just assumed it’s because victoria’s leaving town with locke.

Billy: No, I think I’m okay there.

Lily: Yeah, but if jill is seeing signs of self-sabotage…

Billy: There’s nothing to worry about, I promise you. I just wanted to tell you about it in the spirit of full disclosure, ’cause I don’t want to keep anything from you.

Lily: Yeah, but I can’t just ignore it. I mean, jill knows you better than anybody.

Billy: I’m not headed to a dark place. What she’s picking up on is not self-sabotage.

Lily: But there is something.

Billy: [ Sighs ] It’s a little difficult to explain something that I don’t understand yet. But I will say that the work I’m doing on the podcast, it is — it is deeply personal for me.

Lily: Well, I mean, yeah, that’s — that’s the point.

Billy: Yeah, especially “the grinning soul,” you know? It’s an unknown entity. There’s no name. There’s no past. I get to dig deep, and it’s incredibly liberating. And it is — it’s something new, you know? But that’s very exciting for me. And it also feels very fragile. It feels like I need to protect it. Does that make any sense?

Lily: I mean, not really, but I think what matters is that it makes sense to you.

Billy: This new journey that I’m on, it is incredibly invigorating. And I’m excited to see where it takes me.

Lily: Well, look, I’m —

[ Sighs ] I’m happy that you’re passionate about your journey, you know? But, I mean, it is one that’s separate from me and from the map that we laid out together. So is that what jill is picking up on? Are you pulling away from me? Are you — are you pulling away from chancellor-winters? Is that what’s happening here? After years on the battlefield and multiple concussions,

Adam: Yes, I was ceo for a time when we all believed that you had died. I stepped in to continue your legacy. I felt a huge responsibility to preserve what you had built. I was determined to do it my way, and I was proud, even if i didn’t want to admit it.

Victor: You were arrogant, son.

Adam: Undeniably. I alienated people that were trying to help me. But then one day you walked through that door, alive and well, and you were determined to take back control.

Victor: I was appalled by your methods.

Adam: Rightly so. I was disgusted by them in retrospect. But I got results.

Victor: You did.

Adam: It was not my time. I had a lot to learn. But we are different men now. I have the temperament. I have the skill. I have the drive. I am the one that should be at newman. I’m the one that should lead this company into the next decade. Someone that actually cares about preserving your legacy, dad. I am here. I am ready. I am willing. I’m a proven contender. If you let me do this, I swear to you I will do it better than vic–

Victor: Michael.

Lily: I know, but what about the company? What about chancellor-winters and the road that got us here?

Billy: Oh, you know me. I love a good road trip — the open highway, good diner food. Hey. I am in this for the long haul.

Lily: I know that you’re in the long haul with me, but what about the company?

Billy: I am incredibly excited to see what you are going to do with this company. I really am, and I’m gonna be there riding shotgun with you as you are on your new journey as ceo at chancellor-winters. And I am excited about my journey, too. It’s not separate from you. It’s just mine. Something that I connect to.

Adam: In the interest of transparency, I actually delegated that task to somebody else. It’s something that you’re going to have to do more of as your new role as ceo.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Sally spectra, in your brief but exciting time in genoa city, you have risen from lowly assistant at fenmore’s to top dog at newman media. What is your first step? How do you plan to make people sit up and take notice?

Sally: Good question. I am glad that you asked that. Content is still king, but we will also be focusing on connectivity. Upgrading so that we can have a bigger reach. Every person is a story that’s waiting to be told. I want to build connections that matter, with our customers, the community, and within the company. That should be in our mission statement, ’cause we want to be the ones that people turn to whenever they want news or a different perspective. To learn something that’ll help them grow.

Adam: Well, too bad you haven’t given this any thought.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Also, I need to find someone to fill my shoes as coo, somebody that I can trust, but who will also help me see my vision through.

Adam: Before I could even stop myself, I let my father know that I knew he was only naming me ceo to jolt victoria back to reality. To force her to come back and reclaim her throne.

Sally: What’d he say?

Adam: Oh, he would neither confirm nor deny. Of course. But it was so obvious.

Sally: Okay. Let’s say that is victor’s plan. What’s yours? What you need to do is make a splash to prove beyond a doubt that you deserve to be there.

Adam: That is exactly what i told him. I don’t give a damn why he gave me the job. I’m gonna prove to him it’s the smartest move to make because i know what newman needs, and I am the best person to run that company.

Sally: You make yourself indispensable.

Adam: I am going to miss that mind of yours. I have nikki as coo now. I’m sure I’m not gonna be receiving anything even resembling support from her. I’m sure she’s only sticking around to keep an eye on me.

Michael: How hard are they trying to hide?

Michael: Victor, you don’t pay me my very generous salary to skulk about in the shadows. I’m your legal counsel. Emphasis on counsel at the moment. And I’d like — I’d like to share my perspective on this.

Victor: And do I have a choice or what?

Michael: No. I hate ashland almost as much as you do. And it shocked the hell out of me that even after everything victoria learned about him, she still chose to go with him.

Michael: But you told me that you thought it was more about her wanting to cut ties and move in a different direction and not about ashland.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] It’s, uh, victoria.

Chelsea: What’s the latest with her? Adam and I, we only talk about connor now, so I am way behind on all my newman family gossip. All I know is ashland’s sick.

Nick: Oh, he’s sick, alright. But it’s got nothing to do with cancer. He made the whole thing up.

Chelsea: What? Why?

Nick: To distract his mark, to get everyone’s sympathy, to make it seem as if he’s —

Chelsea: Seem as if he’s the poor, defenseless victim, and he lulls everyone in with a false sense of security, only to rob them blind. Yeah, I’m familiar with that scam.

Nick: Yeah, it’s just part of the story. I mean, his whole life is one lie after another.

Chelsea: Wow. Nick, I had no idea. I am so sorry.

Nick: Thanks. We were able to get rid of him, though.

Chelsea: How?

Nick: We paid him off, got him out of the company. But he still has this hold on victoria.

Chelsea: Wait, they’re still together?

Nick: Yeah.

Chelsea: Because she believes his cancer story?

Nick: I don’t know.

[ Sighs ] But no. I mean, she knows he made the whole thing up.

Chelsea: Okay, I don’t get it.

Nick: Yeah, neither do we. And it’s driving us crazy because it doesn’t matter what we do or say, we can’t get her to wake up.

Chelsea: I mean, there must be something you can do to keep him away from her.

Nick: Well, daily I think about putting his head through a wall, which will make me feel better. But it won’t bring my sister back.

Chelsea: After what he has done to victoria and your family, you have every right to want ashland destroyed.

Billy: Hi.

Nikki: Hi.

Billy: I hope everything’s alright. You didn’t tell me in your text what you wanted to talk about.

Nikki: Well, victoria isn’t returning any phone calls and nobody knows where she and ashland are.

Billy: Yeah. It’s upsetting for everyone.

Nikki: Including you. Because you realize that if she stays with him, those beautiful, impressionable children will be forced to spend time with that monster.

Billy: What are you saying, nikki?

Nikki: I know that you must have insisted that she tell you where they’re going.

Billy: I wish I could help you, I —

Nikki: And I’m sure that she swore you to secrecy, but, billy, I really need your help because my daughter is off god knows where with that man. I have no idea what he has planned, and I am worried sick, so if there’s anything that you could share.

Billy: I don’t know where she is. I don’t know where she’s going. I really don’T. She hasn’t told me anything. I’m waiting to hear just like everyone else where she plans to set down her roots.

Nikki: How do you feel about what she’s doing?

Billy: I hate it. And I’m worried about her and my children and anyone who cares about her. Including victor.

Victor: My daughter is an extremely capable woman in business. She knows what she’s doing. When it comes to her damn private life…I don’t know what the hell is happening to her. She keeps on gravitating toward flawed men. It’s absolutely inexplicable to me.

Michael: Uh…I’m an attorney, not a shrink, but this sounds easy to explain.

Victor: How so?

Michael: Look at her father. She adores you. You are a powerful, deeply flawed man, who has proven himself capable of changing.

Victor: You’re right about one thing. You ain’t a shrink.

Michael: Just saying.

Victor: Just saying, okay. How can you conflate me with those two bastards who have caused her nothing but pain? I’m not anything like that.

Michael: That’s not what i said.

Victor: Listen to me. Enough with this armchair psychology. I want you to do a job. What can I du with less asthma?

Lily: Okay, so make sure you get me the files on the foundation that wants to work with us on the internships. Um…what else? Oh, when you plan lunch with mitchell, remember that she’s vegan. So I think that’s it. What do you have for me?

Lori: Requests for interviews and speaking engagements with billy. How should pr respond?

Lily: Oh, I guess they want to hear from him since he didn’t give a speech at the launch.

Lori: They’re interested in his podcast.

Lily: Yes, he does. He does. Yeah, I think pr should make the most of all of our podcasters, but first and foremost, billy, so…

Billy: You know, I got to be honest, when victoria told me that she was leaving town, I did not handle myself very well.

Nikki: What happened?

Billy: I threatened to — to not allow any change to our custody agreement. To not allow the kids to go visit her out of state in order to protect them.

Nikki: Oh, billy.

Billy: No, I know. I realize that that was not the right thing to do, because, truthfully, you and i both know that she would never do anything to jeopardize her kids.

Nikki: Absolutely not. That’s one thing about her that will never change.

Billy: I agree. So, obviously, I’m not gonna follow through with that threat. And I told victoria the same. I told her that she’s a grown woman and that she is very capable of leading the life that she wants to lead. So I will be stepping back. I’m gonna let it go.

Michael: I like my billable hours as much as the next attorney, but why don’t you get your team of pis to handle this?

Victor: This may require the kind of finesse that only you have in your arsenal. You got it? And you have a personal stake in this. You want to get even with that bastard who caused you all that pain in peru. You want to get even with ashland locke as much as I do. We need to get to him before he causes more pain for victoria.

Michael: It’s victoria’s choice.

Victor: She needs our help. She’s obviously incapable of making up her mind. She’s obviously incapable of leaving that bastard. Do you want him to cause more damage? I know that victoria wants to be here. She made a mistake and she knows it. I’m certain she does. But she wants to be back here with her family, back running the company, I promise you.

Michael: She will eventually, in her time.

Victor: I don’t give a damn about her own time. I want it to happen now before he does more damage. I want you to find out where the hell they are and what their plans are. I’ll take care of the rest.

Sally: Well, you said it yourself. I am what you’ve always needed.

Adam: Oh. And we both know that I am always right.

Sally: Well, I will never let you down. Even if we are not working in the same part of the company, we will always be a team.

Adam: And we both know… how to play the game to win.

Summer: Thank you.

Kyle: Mmm. I missed the iced tea when we were in italy. I mean, how is the iced coffee in milan so good but the iced tea was terrible?

Summer: I don’t know, it’s one of life’s great mysteries.

Kyle: You know, what I miss the most in milan is the street food. Just being able to walk around and get anything anytime — sweet, savory.

[ Chuckles ] Harrison loved that gelato.

Summer: We all loved the gelato.

Kyle: Oh, the guy in the piazza with the fresh and the cart — oh, the best ravioli you’ve ever had for 5 euros.

Summer: You sound hungry.

Kyle: Oh, I wasn’t until i started reminiscing. I guess we’re just gonna have to move back to milan. For the ravioli.

Summer: Don’t even joke about this.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] I’m sorry.

Summe oh, god, I have been going through all of these text messages and e-mails from my mom trying to find some clue as to how to handle this situation between our mothers.

Kyle: I don’t understand why it’s your responsibility to broker peace between two grown women.

Summer: [ Scoffs ] I wish that I could wash my hands of it, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that my mom and diane would kill each other if given the chance. That’s the pool house burned down back in the day.

Kyle: I’d like to think they’re past that. Well, my mother is anyway.

Summer: Something thwarted the romance between my mom and your dad, and I am not convinced that your mother didn’t have something to do with it.

Kyle: I just think we’re best served if we stay away from their conflict.

Summer: I did what I could for my mother by getting daniel to invite her out of town, which she desperately needed. I mean, just being in the vicinity of diane brings out the absolute worst in her.

Allie: I was so interested in what jabot is doing with nanotechnology and skin care that ashley actually arranged a second visit to the lab for me. I got to shadow the lead researcher.

Jack: Wow. And I’m sure ashley was thrilled to find someone who is interested in that part of the business. I cannot overstate what ashley has done for jabot.

Allie: I mean, ashley is pretty incredible. I’ve done some research on her myself, and I found out she’s the leading fragrance chemist in the industry. She holds all of these patents and was named innovator of the year.

Jack: She’s pretty remarkable, and I think she would be happy to know that you want to be a little more hands-on in the lab. Maybe she could even arrange something, maybe a summer internship.

Allie: Oh, jack, um…I don’t know.

Chelsea: [ Humming ]

Chloe: [ Clears throat ]

Chelsea: [ Humming ]

Chloe: Okay, could you — sorry, it’s just a little distracting.

Chelsea: Oh, sorry. I didn’t even realize I was doing that.

[ Chuckles ] You know, connor said the strangest thing last night. He asked me if I thought they played soccer in heaven. I didn’t even know what to say. I know he’s thinking about rey. He’s just been so distant lately, you know? And I try to get him to talk and he shuts down. I — I think he feels mentioning rey will upset me.

Chloe: You’ll both get through it. You know, you’re doing great, and so is connor, all things considered. I mean, especially since, you know, you’ve had a lot of pressure to get things finalized for the new line. Speaking of which, could I see what you’re working on?

Chelsea: Sure.

Chelsea: Yeah, I know. I just liked the idea for next year. I didn’t want to let it slip away.

Jack: That is very sweet. You would not be taking anyone’s job. Believe me, all of our regular internships have been filled for some time now with younger students, undergraduates.

Allie: Oh. [ Chuckles ]

Jack: Yeah, nancy, the lead researcher you met…

Allie: Yeah?

Jack: …Has almost no connection with those people at all. Her work is too advanced. No, we would be setting up an internship to help her. You’d get a chance to test the waters and there’s no long-term commitment — none.

Allie: I mean, that sounds perfect. But can you give me a little time to think about it?

Jack: Absolutely. You take all the time you want.

Allie: I appreciate this, jack. Thank you for being so thoughtful.

Jack: It is in jabot’s best interest to work with bright young chemists. I also know there’s an emotional element in all this — following in your father’s footsteps. If that aspect is getting in your way, I understand that.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] After all these years, you still don’t understand how the creative mind works.

Chloe: I guess not. Please explain.

Chelsea: It’s a process. I’m not over here just wasting time daydreaming. I’m thinking about the changes i want to make to my designs.

Chloe: I see, and I — I have a process, too, and that involves making sure that we have designs in time so we can get them into production.

Chelsea: I know, and it’s very motivating and respectful. That’s why we work so well together.

Chloe: So how can i respectfully motivate you to work faster?

Chelsea: Chloe, I’m doing the best that I can. I mean, I can’t just flip a switch to finish a design.

Chloe: Okay, but you’re operating at a pace that may necessitate some changes in production.

Chelsea: What do you mean?

Chloe: You know, we’ve missed a couple deadlines, so we’re not gonna be able to get that custom print that you wanted for the separates.

Chelsea: No, that print is essential to my vision.

Chloe: Okay, maybe I could… try to find another manufacturer that can make the print.

Chelsea: No, no, no, no. Too much is riding on this to go with someone new.

Chloe: I get it. Believe me, I get it, because i have been making myself crazy trying to juggle all these moving parts so I could free you up to create beautiful designs.

Chelsea: I’m sorry, but you can’t rush artistic inspiration.

Chloe: Chelsea [Sighs] The logistics of production matter. And if we keep on missing these deadlines, lauren is going to get fed up with us, she’s gonna kick us to the curb, and then all of this hard work will have been for nothing.

Kyle: This will be a moot point by the time phyllis gets back. She’ll have cooled off.

Summer: No one cools off in georgia in june.

Kyle: You know what I mean.

Summer: I know what you mean. I also know what daniel means when he says that mom’s been moody. It means that she’s been stewing over what happened between her and jack. She might even come back more upset.

Kyle: We do not want that.

Summer: No, we don’T. But what about your mom?

Kyle: What do you mean?

Summer: Is there a way that we could get her out of town for a while? I mean, doesn’t she need to go back to la and tie up some loose ends or something?

Kyle: [ Sighs ] I don’t think she’s gonna go for that. She feels like we finally reconnected. She’s getting to spend some time with harrison. She’s even talked about putting roots down in genoa city. She even asked me to help her find a job.

Summer: Really? What — what does she want to do?

Kyle: She mentioned pr. Apparently back in california, she took some classes, but we didn’t get into the details. And I didn’t make any promises. My point is she’s ready to settle down here. Maybe we can get phyllis to hire her at the hotel.

Summer: No, no. That one was worse than the ravioli joke. Kyle, come on. This is serious.

Kyle: I know. But what more can we do? I think we should focus on things we can control. Like finding a new ceo at marchetti. The deal with jabot is about to be finalized, and we need someone in place — the sooner, the better.

Summer: I thought that we found the perfect candidate. Does that mean that you’re taking yourself out of the running?

Kyle: No, no, I’m still considering it. I just… look, I don’t know if I’m the right person for the job.

Summer: But you are. What can I do to convince you? Hi, my name’s steve.

Chelsea: I know the way i work isn’t the most efficient, but I am coming up with some great stuff right now. I’m inspired, and truly, this new line is gonna be so stunning, I don’t think lauren’s gonna care if we’re late for a deadline here and there.

Chloe: You may be coming up with amazing pieces, but here’s the thing. We can’t sell sketches. We need to make the clothes.

Chelsea: Chloe, everything will fall into place, okay? It always does, so I’m just gonna need you to relax and trust that everything will work out.

Chloe: Where have I heard that before?

Chelsea: What did you say?

Chloe: You know what? No, you are totally right. It is not your job to sweat the small details of mass production. That is my job.

Chelsea: Okay. You’re kind of making it sound like I’m irresponsible. Um…I would never let anybody down, certainly not you and certainly not lauren. I just don’t need a rigid structure.

Chloe: I beg to differ, but that is the difference between the two of us. Your brand of genius is brilliant and flashy, whereas when I get it right, nobody should notice. Not even you. And my job is to make sure that nothing will impeded your creative flow.

Chelsea: So you need to babysit me?

Chloe: Yes.

Chloe: No, no, I — I mean, that was obviously a joke. I — my point is, is that I am here to protect you, even if that means being a pain in the butt sometimes.

Chelsea: What do you think i would do without you? Do you think I would completely implode?

Allie: Ashley is amazing. I mean, so is the rest of the abbotts, and then there’s noah and mariah and tessa, even — even diane, who I get that she used me in the beginning, but she’s been kind of sweet to me lately. Okay, that — that was the wrong thing to say.

Jack: No, no, not at all.

Allie: I know she’s done terrible things to your family, to noah’s family.

Jack: That shouldn’t matter. No, I’m not gonna be dictating how you should feel about diane or anyone else. No, we all have to come to our own conclusions. That includes kyle. And if you find her sweet, well, that’s what’s important, but…

Allie: But what?

Jack: Don’t get too close. You always have to allow for the fact that diane has her own agenda.

Allie: Ah. So you still think she’s up to no good.

Jack: No, I just don’t want anyone to get hurt, especially you. I’m not sure what diane’s ultimate motives are. I will be grateful to her forever for two things — bringing my son into this world and bringing my granddaughter into my life.

Kyle: We have to realize what I’d be giving up if I step down as co-ceo of jabot, and…it’s more than just power or status. You know, I really enjoyed working with my dad.

Summer: I know. You two have grown so much closer.

Kyle: It’s more than just family bonding. I’m showing him I can take the reins if needed.

Summer: But taking over marchetti is not a step down. It’s a big company with a lot of room for growth.

Kyle: Mm. I see your point. Could be another, possibly better, way to show him what I’m capable of. Running a company on my own, demonstrating leadership skills.

Summer: And you wouldn’t have to leave the family business to do that because marchetti is gonna be a part of jabot. It’s the best of both worlds.

Kyle: [ Sighs ] You sound like you’ve made up your mind for me.

Summer: Well, it’s your decision to make, and you got to do what’s right for you.

Kyle: I have to admit, I have been having ideas on how to turn marchetti around. I guess we could just hire someone to implement those ideas, but…nah, what’s the fun in that?

Summer: Does that mean —

Kyle: Yes, I’ll take the job. I’m in.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Kyle: [ Laughs ] Oh! I’ll tell my dad when we see him later.

Summer: Oh, my gosh, this — this is amazing. I am so excited.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Kyle: Oh.

Summer: Hey, mom. How’s it going in savannah?

Phyllis: Excellent. Daniel is an incredible host. I’m really enjoying myself.

Summer: It’s good to hear from you. I feel like it’s been a while since we talked.

Phyllis: I know, I know. Well, that’s on me. Daniel is such a good host. He’s been showing me all the sites here in savannah. So beautiful. Hey, do you know what kudzu is?

Summer: No.

Phyllis: Oh, it’s this beautiful vine that grows everywhere here. It’s so gorgeous. Um, so how is it going at home?

Summer: Things are good. The weather is beautiful.

Phyllis: That’s great. Hey, let me ask you something. Did you take my advice and talk to your husband and get him to send diane packing?

Summer: Mom, I told you that I wasn’t gonna try to change his mind. And there’s no point anyway. Diane is sticking around. She wants to rebuild her relationship with kyle and he wants to give her a chance.

Phyllis: That’s not gonna go well for him or for you. But sometimes people need to learn their lessons on their own.

Summer: Does that mean that you’re now willing to accept diane’s presence here in genoa city and leave the rest of us to make our own decisions where she’s concerned?

Phyllis: I will not get worked up over diane. I will not do it. I won’t do it, summer. Anger is poison. It’s a poison that will eat away at you and kill you if you let it, and I will not do that.

Summer: I would love to believe that.

Phyllis: Then believe it.

Summer: Enough about diane. I have so much to tell you. The deal for marchetti is almost done, and we’re making progress on a ceo.

Phyllis: That’s great. I love to hear that. Um…let’s get together and chat when I get home.

Summer: When will that be, exactly?

Summer: Soon. Very soon.

Chelsea: You’re misunderstanding what you overheard. The new line is gonna be great.

Chloe: Yes, chelsea has come up with some amazing new ideas for the upcoming season.

Gloria: And I can’t wait to see them.

Chloe: You were — you were just in london for their fashion week. How was it?

Gloria: Oh, it was marvelous. I was treated so well. Got so many compliments on how I’m representing jcv. Lauren is thrilled with my team. And we even surpassed the most optimistic projections.

Chloe: Well, that’s great. I’m very happy for you, gloria.

Gloria: Oh, and while I was there, I was able to chat up the new line.

Chloe: Oh, I didn’t ask you to do that.

Gloria: Chloe, we’re family. We do that for each other.

Chloe: I think it’s more of a one-way street. You know, where kevin and I get you out of jams and then you rarely say thanks.

Gloria: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Well, that’s why I’m so happy to be in the position to do you a favor.

Chloe: But you haven’t even seen what we’re working on, so how could you possibly know what to say?

Gloria: Darling, I am gloria. I can hype anything. That’s one of my gifts. I told them that the new line is brilliant and a real game-changer.

Chloe: Well, I suppose that’s vague enough to avoid any inaccuracies. Assuming if we ever finish it.

Gloria: As in — I didn’t quite hear that.

Chelsea: Oh, she said we’re almost done.

Gloria: Ah. [ Laughs ] Oh, justike old times, chelsea. Me, traveling the continent — in fact, the entire world — promoting your new designs.

Chelsea: That sounds like a wonderful experience.

Gloria: Oh, it was, it was, it was. An I spoke to some buyers and critics… who were you so eager to welcome you back to the world of fashion.

Chelsea: That’s so nice to hear.

Gloria: Oh, it was, it was. In fact, next year, we need to go to fashion week together. The fenmore fashionistas.

Chelsea: Yes, I love it. Alert the authorities now so they have 12 months to prepare for us.

[ Laughs ]

Gloria: We will have too much fun.

Chloe: Yeah, well, first we need to get through the launch of our new line.

Gloria: And I don’t think that’s a problem, because you two are brilliant. You have lauren’s support and financial backing, and the best thing — you are so exceedingly lucky to be working with your best friend in the whole wide world. I’d say these are ideal circumstances.

Chelsea: You’d think so, wouldn’t you?

Allie: Jack, whatever i decide about the internship or even staying here in genoa city, I just want you to know how much I appreciate your generosity.

Jack: No.

Aie: No, I’m serious. And it’s not about letting me stay at the house, but rather just you being there for me. When my dad died, I felt very alone. And that feeling’s disappearing more and more every day.

Jack: I’m glad to hear that. And you don’t have to thank me. That is what family does. Look, from the very first day i met you in los angeles, I knew that you were hurting. I didn’t know about your relationship with your mother at all, but I could see that you needed to feel loved, needed to feel a sense of belonging and purpose of place. I didn’t want to push because, of course, I did that with your father.

Allie: You got the balance exactly right.

Diane: Hello, you two. Oh, I’m sorry, is this — is this a bad time? Is everything alright?

Allie: No, everything’s wonderful, diane. You know what? I’m actually late to go meet noah at the park.

Jack: Okay, well, tell noah i said hello and thank him for giving you good advice.

Allie: I will. Great to see you, diane.

Diane: You too, allie. Hmm. Noah again? They seem to be spending a lot of time together.

Jack: Yes, they do seem to be hitting it off.

Diane: Good for her. She’s a special young woman. She seems to be fitting in here really well.

Jack: Better than you?

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, that wouldn’t take much.

Jack: Go ahead, say it. You want to say it. All of this wouldn’t be happening to allie if it hadn’t been for you. That’s where you’re going with this, isn’t it?

Diane: There aren’t a lot of positive things I can take credit for. Let me have that. Please? [ Chuckles ] May I?

Jack: Yeah, go ahead. What can I du with less asthma?

Lauren: Well, of course. I heard the marchetti deal is almost wrapped up.

Kyle: Oh, the legal department’s taking their time.

Lauren: Oh, and after being married to a lawyer as long as i have, I can tell you, they will not be rushed.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Lauren: Okay, so I’m excited to hear about this possible collaboration between marchetti and fenmore’S. I’ve been curious since you mentioned it a couple weeks ago.

Kyle: Couldn’t be more specific at the time. I had to wait until the terms of the deal were finalized.

Lauren: I’m excited to hear. Go on ahead.

Kyle: Go ahead, summer.

Summer: We would like for fenmore’s to be the exclusive carrier for marchetti in the us.

Lauren: Wow. Wow. That would be great for both brands, and, of course, I love it because I trust your creative vision.

Summer: Thank you. That means so much to me, coming from you, lauren.

Lauren: But I do have questions.

Summer: Like?

Lauren: Like I heard that angelina marchetti is looking to retire. And if she does step down, who is gonna fill those very classy shoes? Do you have a designer lined up?

Summer: Not yet, but we have ideas.

Kyle: That’s something else we wanted to talk to you about.

Summer: The person that we have in mind, I think she would be very excited by the opportunity, but we wanted to run it by you first.

Lauren: I’m intrigued. Who do you have in mind?

Summer: Chelsea lawson.

Chloe: Truth be told, there has actually been some friction between the two best friends in the whole world.

Chelsea: But it’s just the pressure getting to us. We’re working through it.

Chloe: We’ve gotten through worse.

Gloria: Of course you have. Your friendship has weathered the test of time. Listen, I have run so many different businesses — some of them successful, some of them ruined by my partner’s lack of vision. But the way I see it, the secret to success is simple. You hire the people who are the best for the job, and then you get out of their way.

Chelsea: Agreed. It all comes down to trust.

Gloria: Ooh. Yes, kind of like a symphony orchestra. Everybody has their roles to play. They play their parts beautifully. I mean, the bassoonist is never gonna play the piccolo. The violinist will never blow the french horn. Everyone brings their own talents to the table, and then they make beautiful music together.

Chloe: As long as they’re paying attention to the conductor. Otherwise, it’s just noise.

Chelsea: You see yourself as the conductor?

Chloe: Well, someone has to make sure that things are running the way they’re supposed to.

Chelsea: And what am I in this scenario, the noise?

Chloe: Well, without me, you can’t make the beautiful music.

Chelsea: You want to bet?

Gloria: Oh, ladies, ladies, ladies, shh. This will not do.

Diane: I got to see harrison in the park today. I swear he is growing day-by-day. I think I need to carry a tape measure around with me.

Jack: I probably don’t notice as much as I used to, now that I see him every day. I mean, it used to be I’d go to italy every couple of months, and I would see giant changes.

Diane: I’m sure you love that they’re going to stay here in genoa city.

Jack: I do.

Diane: So be honest, is that why you’re purchasing marchetti?

Jack: No, there are plenty of good reasons for acquiring that company, business-wise, but this is a fringe benefit.

Diane: Hmm. I really enjoyed my time in milan, and I would’ve been willing to move back there if kyle wanted me to, but, hmm, I’m kind of glad it didn’t come to that.

Jack: Really? I think you would be relieved to get away from all of the resentment you’ve been dealing with here.

Diane: Oh, it isn’t that bad.

[ Sighs ] Okay, it’s — it’s been that bad.

Jack: Yeah.

Diane: But I’m hoping that people are going to stop lashing out or clinging to their old view of me. Maybe over time, even…those I’ve wronged the most will be willing to see that I’ve changed or at least admit that it’s possible. Is it too soon to put you in that category?

Jack: I’m trying to forget the past and believe in the future, for you and kyle.

Diane: Well, thank you for that. That’s what I would expect from jack abbott.

[ Chuckles ] It’s a tiny, little club you’ve joined of people that I’ve maybe somewhat won over, but I’m going to try to keep adding new members. Although I know there are some people I’m never going to be able to recruit, such as phyllis.

Jack: I think the best option is to avoid her altogether. Pretend you live in separate universes. Age-related macular degeneration may lead to severe vision loss.

Gloria: I have a very special place in my heart for both of you. That is why you need to listen to what I’m about to say. Now, first of all, I know how you feel about me. You think I’m a daffy gadfly who flits from here to there, pestering everybody I meet.

Chloe: No, gloria —

Gloria: Yes, please. You think I’m the crazy, wacky mother-in-law who just pops up for your own personal comic relief. But I’m gonna tell you who i really I’M. I’m a survivor. I’ve been doing this a long time, and people always underestimate me. But I’m still here because i know what works and I know what has value. And from where I’m sitting, what I see, you two have value as a team. Both equally brilliant. You, the designer. You, making the trains run on time. But you have got to harness this negativity I’m picking up on and turn it into some positive energy that will send you both rocketing to new heights.

Chloe: It’s good advice.

Chelsea: Yeah, we’ll — we’ll take that to heart.

Gloria: Good. I suggest you do. Stay strong. Stay smart. Stay together. Ah, and I think my work is done here, so I will see you back at the office. Ta-ta. Ooh, thank you so much.

Lauren: So you want chelsea to design for you?

Summer: That’s right.

Kyle: We know she has a deal with you for her new line.

Summer: And if she signs with us, that deal stays in place. The only thing that would change is the branding.

Lauren: So it would be chelsea lawson for marchetti.

Kyle: The advantages for both companies would be that marchetti gets a line that’s ready to launch, and it’s up to your high standards.

Lauren: Okay, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. I have seen the preliminary sketches that’s chelsea’s been working on, and it would have to be a very different sensibility for marchetti, because what I’m looking at is very modern and american.

Summer: Well, we would tweak the designs as necessary to fit what marchetti customers have come to expect.

Lauren: Let me be clear — the sketches that I’m seeing i really like and I think that they could sell, and I don’t want to lose that.

Kyle: Well, maybe you wouldn’t have to. Chelsea could pull double duty, assuming she can handle the workload.

Summer: I don’t think that that should be a problem. I mean, chelsea is an absolute force, and it would be a win-win for her. She gets to launch her own brand, but then she and fenmore’s gets access to marchetti’s loyal customer base and brand recognition.

Lauren: I mean, she does have chloe to help with logistics, and as long as chelsea doesn’t get burned out.

Kyle: Not to mention summer’s expertise, and fenmore’s can hand off some of the financial risk.

Lauren: But what about the search for the new ceo? I mean, that is the missing puzzle piece. I would want whoever is coming in to be on board.

Summer: Of course.

Kyle: I think whoever takes the position would be very excited about this partnership. That won’t be a problem.

Lauren: Alright. Well, then let’s pursue this. Presuming that chelsea’s agreeable.

Summer: That is so good to hear.

Kyle: This is going to be a very exciting partnership.

Lauren: I agree.

Kyle: As much as I would like to keep discussing this — and we will soon — I need to go pick up harrison from his playdate with christian.

Lauren: Aww, give him a squeeze for me, will you?

Kyle: I will. I’ll be back before you know it.

Lauren: He seems happier than the last time I saw him. Now, what about your mom? Any news from her?

Summer: We spoke briefly earlier today. She seems like she’s having a good time, and she says that she’s now ready to let go of all of her anger towards diane.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] But you don’t believe her.

Summer: Not a word.

Diane: Believe me, I would love to stay away from phyllis, but our son is married to her daughter.
