Devon: Mr. Newman. Hello.

Victor: My goodness. Thank you for coming by.

Devon: Oh, yeah.

Victor: How was the first overnight with our little boy?

Devon: Couldn’t have been better.

Victor: Yeah?

Devon: It really couldn’t have been better. Yeah, no, it’s — despite everything that’s going on in his world around him, he was very, very happy at my place.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Look at him. Well, thank you for bringing by my grandson to see me.

Devon: Yeah, absolutely. Any time.

Victor: I know we’re all trying to do the best under the circumstances.

Devon: Yeah.

Victor: Ashley now tells me that abby may have left town, you know, or at least she left the house.

Devon: Yeah, I heard that. I heard that same thing. And, you know, when she dropped him off, she mentioned to me that she was considering leaving town.

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ] Very concerned about her state of mind.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ] Chance. I had to get out of that house. Felt like I was suffocating. Everyone hovering over me like i was a piece of glass about to shatter.

[ Sighs ] I just — I had to go somewhere, somewhere where I could understand my thoughts and someplace where I could focus on you. I…brought this box because i know it’s filled with things that mean a lot to you. And I thought that if I brought it, it would help me feel your presence.

[ Sighs ]

Lily: Okay. Gonna hit publish.

Billy: Just wait. Are we sure?

Lily: Yes, yes, we’ve been through this. We showed the words to the lawyers. Everyone’s in agreement. I mean, this is our best option.

Billy: Just hard to believe that after pulling an all-nighter, those are the three best lines that we have.

Lily: I know. Well, I mean, I can read it to you again if you want and you can see if you want to add anything. Yeah?

Billy: Yeah.

Lily: Okay. “Chancellor communications did not intend to publish yesterday’s exposé of ashland locke. We were victims of an illegal hack, and the article was published without our knowledge or approval. We are investigating the security breach and regret the error.”

Billy: You know what this means, don’t you?

Lily: I know, I know. It just looks like we’re trying to save ourselves, but we have to, okay? I mean, this puts on record that, you know, we were hacked and this can help cover us from any possible lawsuits.

Billy: So what is it about me that makes me want to double-down on this? Everything in that article is true about ashland’s past. We can stick it to adam and victor and ashland by telling the truth, by standing by the story.

Lily: I know, but you know why we can’t do that. We don’t have any way to prove it. It’s just gonna make chanccomm look even more irresponsible. Okay, listen, we can’t wait anymore. We have to publish this, okay?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah.

Lily: [ Sighs ] We did the right thing, alright? Even though we were hacked, we’re a media company, and as co-ceos, the responsibility lies with us.

Rey: I couldn’t agree more.

Ashland: You seem pleased. Does that mean what I think it means?

Adam: They just printed their retraction. Chanccomm looks as ineffectual as we knew they would. O man, that’s a whole lot of wrinkly

Devon: I don’t know, I’m just worried that I — I may have played a part in abby taking off.

Victor: Why do you say that? How so?

Devon: Well, because I — i shared with her my past experiences on grief, and i tried to get her to understand the importance of not only just, you know, relying and leaning on the support system that she has around her but to really take time for herself. And now I’m wondering if that’s what she’s doing. Is she taking time for herself by leaving time in private and not telling anybody?

Victor: I really am a little upset that she didn’t come to me with my grandson. I mean, nikki and I would have taken very good care of him.

Devon: Oh, I mean, yeah, of course, no doubt you would. And I — so you know, I had no idea that she was gonna do what she did and leave the baby like that. I was as surprised as anybody.

Victor: I’m sure you were. But I understand why she did come to you. You know, you’re very good with the boy. And besides that, you were there when he was born.

Devon: It’s true, and I also promised to always be there for her and the baby.

Victor: I want to thank you for what you have done for my daughter and for my grandson, okay?

Devon: Of course.

Victor: However, entrusting you with an infant, I mean, you’re gonna have to change diapers, perhaps, you know?

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Victor: I mean, this is putting a lot of responsibility on you.

Devon: No, I understand. I do, and I assure you that I’m up for it.

Victor: Yeah?

Devon: I really am. I am more than happy to take care of dominic while abby takes care of herself. And she’s left me with everything that I could need, and she’s having the nanny come, so we’re okay.

Victor: Well, as I said — but what?

Devon: But it’s abby taking off like she has without telling anybody, it’s — I’m worried.

Victor: Well, she has a lot of trust and faith in you, as well she should, you know? But I’m concerned… concerned about her state of mind. I don’t think she’s thinking clearly.

Devon: Yeah.

Faith: You met dominic?

Moses: Yeah, finally.

Faith: When?

Moses: This morning, before i went to school.

Faith: Uh, wait, where was this?

Moses: At devon’s place. Dominic’s supposed to be staying with us for a while.

Faith: Seriously? For how long?

Moses: I don’t know all the details, just that abby can’t handle taking care of him right now.

Faith: Oh, no. I wonder what that means. My aunt abby went through so much to have her baby. She wouldn’t have just handed him over like this unless she was a total wreck.

Abby: I remember helping pin this on you when you were putting on your dress blues. I stuck my finger, and then you took the pin and you stuck yours, too. You said that it was our blood oath. That we would always be there for each other, no matter what. I believe you then, and i believe you still. Oh, wow. This is from your time in iraq. You downplayed it. My modest hero. But I know it means a lot to you because it is here in this box. All of these pictures. Who are these people? They must be from your time in iraq, but you haven’t told me much about your time there. It’s almost like you locked it away. Look, I know that I told everyone that I accepted the fact that you were gone, but… I just — I can’T. I can’t stop this feeling in my heart that you are out there somewhere…alive.

[ Sighs ]

Billy: Rey, I really don’t have the time or the patience for more baseless accusations right now.

Rey: Oh, you got it all wrong. I’m here about an accusation that adam made. He said that you were trying to blackmail him and victor, threatening to release that article about ashland locke unless they backed off your company.

Billy: You got to be kidding. This is one big plot by victor and adam to sabotage our company.

Rey: Well, it looks like you made good on your threat. I saw you published the article.

Billy: My e-mail was hacked, and a message was sent to one of our reporters, giving authorization to release a story that we never intended to publish. You should check our website right now. There’s a full retraction on there, vetted by our lawyers. But you’re sitting here telling me that adam is accusing me of blackmail.

Lily: Okay, rey, you have to explain where this is coming from and why you’re taking adam seriously.

Rey: Adam actually has a recording of you confronting him and threatening to release that article unless they back off chanccomm.

Billy: Well, adam can claim whatever he wants. Newmans are the real criminals here. Most bladder leak pads were similar.

Rey: Well, unfortunately for you…adam gave me the recording.

Billy: Honestly, adam, I’m a little bit concerned for you. And I’m gonna be generous. I’m gonna take it easy. We have one of our best reporters crafting the story as we speak. But I won’t publish it if…

Adam: If?

Billy: …You, victor, and ashland cease all operations of attacking chanccomm. It’s as simple as that. That’s taken out of context. What you’re listening to right there is a — a business negotiation, and that is not admissible in court. I did not give them authorization to record me.

Rey: There’s more. There’s a video sent by jesse gaines that supports their claim of blackmail. Do you need to see it to refresh your memory?

Lily: Okay, okay, this is enough. Is this an official interrogation? I mean, do we have to call lawyers here? Like, what exactly do you want, rey?

Billy: Hits just keep on coming, don’t they? Newmans have covered all their bases. So what now, rey, you here to arrest me?

Adam: Well, welcome back.

Ashland: Thank you.

Adam: You look energized. Hope that glow isn’t all about besting billy. I hope there was some good news with your trip to the clinic in peru.

Ashland: I was put on an experimental protocol, and I’ve already received a full regimen of the treatment.

Adam: Well, I am glad to hear that. I’m sure victoria’s relieved, as well.

Ashland: Yes, we’re both feeling very positive. I’m actually happier for her than I am for myself. You’ll never get her to admit it, but this illness has taken quite a toll on her.

Adam: I’m sure it has. Well, my sister’s obviously very much in love.

Ashland: That makes two of us. I’ve been keeping up on everything going on around here, and it looks like it’s all on track.

Adam: Victor and I have done our part, so next move is yours.

Ashland: I’ve already set it in motion. I almost feel bad kicking billy when he’s down. Almost.

Adam: Almost.

Victor: I texted her. And abby is not returning any of my calls. I mean, do you remember anything she might have said that would leave us a clue as to where she went?

Devon: Not about where she was going. The only thing she said to me is that she was considering getting out of town so she can clear her head. But you remember that just a few days ago, she was talking about flying to valencia, spain.

Victor: Yeah, but wait a minute, I thought you had talked her out of that and that she was beginning to accept the notion that chance was gone.

Devon: I hope that we did, but what if we didn’t and that’s what she’s gone and done?

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: Oh, devon, so good to see you.

Devon: Hey.

Nikki: Is everything alright with the baby?

Devon: Oh, yeah, yeah. He’s just taking a nap right now.

Nikki: So, what’s going on? I can tell that you’re both concerned about something.

Victor: Yeah, well, abby has taken off without telling anyone where she has gone.

Devon: We’re both worried that she hasn’t accepted chance’s death the way we hoped.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Well, now I’m worried, too. Victor, isn’t there some way you can find out where she is?

Victor: Well, she didn’t take the newman jet. But I guess I’ll have my people find out if she took any commercial airline.

Devon: And you know what? I’m gonna do some digging myself.

Victor: Okay. This has got me worried. Let’s keep in touch, okay?

Devon: Absolutely.

Nikki: Oh, devon, wait. I’d like to talk to you for a minute if you don’t mind.

Abby: Come on, chance, talk to me. Tell me how these things can bring me to you. This medal is for bravery, and now I’m the one who’s supposed to be brave. How could you have just left us like this?

Chance: I didn’t deserve this medal. Someday, I want to give it to the people who really deserve it.

Abby: Oh. That’s right. You said this was for a rescue mission, that you transported troops back to the base after a bomb went off. You said that you weren’t the real hero that day.

[ Sighs ] It’s my 4:05 the-show-must-go-on

Abby: You said the real heroes that day were the medics who saved so many lives in that field hospital.

Chance: Errol and kim — they treated me like their son. They deserved that medal.

Abby: That’s right, you said there was a couple and they were medics in your unit in iraq, and they treated you like family. You said that one day, you wanted to give this to them in person.

Chance: They would do anything for me.

Abby: You said you kept in touch with them, even after they retired, but to where? The letters. Letters.

Nikki: Oh, he’s sleeping. Hi, sweet boy. Well, please have a seat.

Devon: Sure.

Nikki: Victor tells me that you’re taking care of dominic basically all on your own.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Nikki: I really admire what you’re doing. That’s a lot of responsibility to take on.

Devon: Yeah, it is. Are you worried about me?

Nikki: Oh, are you kidding? To the contrary. I know that you’re wonderful with the baby, and I’ve told victor as much. It’s really very kind and brave.

Devon: I mean, you know that dominic and abby are both my family now, so…

Nikki: I want you to know that you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Just ask if you need help. Single parenthood is not easy.

Devon: Yeah, I know, but I’m not alone.

Nikki: Well, no, I know that amanda just moved in and moses has been living with you.

Devon: Right, yeah, and they’re both very, very helpful, very helpful, very supportive. Although I have no intention on leaning on them for anything. I’m good. I got it under control.

Nikki: I’m sure that you do. But you’re also very busy running a company, and everybody needs help. It really does take a village.

Devon: Yeah, that’s very true, but you know that abby also has arranged for the nanny to come and help me, too.

Nikki: Oh, that’s good.

Devon: Yeah.

Nikki: But still, I want you to think of me as another resource. I’m — I’m here to help with anything. Just call on me if you need me.

Devon: Absolutely, of course.

Nikki: We don’t know where abby is or how long she’ll be gone, but if you really want to be there for dominic, you need to know that you have a lot of support around you, just in case you need to keep it up for a while.

Devon: Yeah.

Moses: Man, I mean, I knew devon had helped out by becoming a donor, but I had no idea about abby losing her first child.

Faith: It was terrible. She was so crushed.

Moses: That’s so sad. I mean, she finally gets her happy, healthy baby, and then loses her husband.

Faith: Yeah. She’s so devastated by it that she can’t even take care of the baby that she and chance wanted so much. It’s like she lost dominic, too.

Moses: Well, if it makes you feel better, dominic’s doing okay. Devon’s in full-on dad mode.

Faith: That’s incredible that he’d just drop everything to help a friend like that.

Moses: Devon’s the best. He’s been trying to fill in as a father figure for me since he knows what it’s like growing up without a dad, and I’m sure he’ll be there for dominic, too, since he kind of is his dad now.

Faith: Dominic never met chance. He’ll never know or remember the father that he lost. But with abby, it’s different. Who knows how long it’ll take for her to get over this, if she ever does.

Moses: Yeah.

Faith: [ Sighs ]

Rey: I’m not here to arrest you.

Lily: Then what is this about?

Rey: I have to investigate these dueling accusations. I want to be completely thorough before I present anything to the da.

Billy: Well, I appreciate you not jumping to conclusions.

Rey: In fact, I’d like to see any proof you have of the newmans infiltrating your e-mail system. It’s a federal crime, so I’m happy to pursue any claims you want to file against them.

Billy: Yeah, our I.T. Team hasn’t figured out how they breached our system yet, but we’re working on it.

Lily: Rey, look at the bigger picture here, okay? This is all a very calculated move against chanccomm. Adam and victor have it in for billy, and this is their way of coming after him and our company.

Rey: I know that the two of them are from saints and the layers of deception and double-cross are quite clear, but I follow the evidence, so unless you can come up with some proof of your claim, my hands are tied. I’ll be in touch.

Lily: So now what are we gonna do?

Billy: There’s only one option.

[ Telephone rings ]

Adam: [ Sighs ] Well, hello, billy. What can I do for you?

Billy: Adam, you’ve made your point. What do you want?

Billy: You, victor, and ashland have done everything you can to sabotage our company. And lucky for you, it appears to be working.

Adam: I got to say, it was a bad blunder publishing that article, billy. Now chanccomm looks awfully bad.

Billy: Well, you got what you wanted. Why don’t you go on and admit it? You hacked into our system, got us to publish that article.

Adam: Hey, you know, rey seemed really interested in those recordings that I gave him. You know, I really feel for you, billy. You never should’ve trusted gaines. Moral of the story is never rely on a blackmailer. That’s one of those hard and fast rules that I live by.

Lily: Adam, why don’t you just tell us what you’re after?

Adam: My advice is simple — fold and get out of the business that you are clearly unqualified to handle.

Lily: [ Scoffs ] You don’t think we’re really gonna do that, do you?

Adam: Hey, that retraction that you released, it’s even more embarrassing than the libelous article that you released. Reads like a pathetic attempt to create a defense.

Lily: We’re not gonna hand over the keys that easily.

Adam: Oh, we weren’t expecting you to walk away for nothing. Newman media would be glad to pay a decent price to take the company off your hands.

Billy: This company is not for sale, do you hear me? Especially not to someone like you.

Adam: You sure about that? I suggest you talk to jill, because if today’s news has the impact on your reputation that i assume it will, chanccomm is gonna be losing subscribers and your ad sales won’t be worth the cost of your company’s letterhead.

Lily: We are not going down without a fight.

Adam: Hey, if that’s what you’re looking for, count us in. We’ll be ready for it. Just be ready to be buried in lawsuits and legal fees. Even if you wanted to do some honest journalism, you won’t have the time or resources.

[ Knock on door ]

Lily: Yes, yes.

You’ve been served.

Lily: Locke is suing us for libel.

Billy: Adam, listen to me, the gloves are off. Do you hear me? They are off!

Sharon: I’m really worried about abby. She was in pretty bad shape when I last saw her, and she must realize that because she left dominic with devon. Rey. Did you hear what I said?

Rey: Yeah, yeah, abby is dealing with a lot of stuff. But I’m pretty sure that dominic’s gonna be okay.

Sharon: Where was your mind just now?

Rey: I got sucked into a case that’s gnawing at me.

Sharon: Oh. Well, you want to run it by me? Sometimes it helps to bounce things off another person.

Rey: Well, sharon, it’s got low ethics and high stakes, but it’s not clear which side to believe. There may be enough evidence to arrest one party for blackmail, but I’m pretty sure doing so will just work into the other party’s hands. And I’m not about to be used as a pawn in their little chess game. It’s pretty clear that some underhanded business is in the works.

Sharon: Okay, you can stop with the vague generalities and the code words. If you’re doing that to protect me, I appreciate it, but I’m pretty sure I know who we’re talking about here — billy and adam.

Kim: Hola.

Abby: Hi. Is this kim dunaway?

Kim: Who’s calling, please?

Abby: This is abby newman chancellor. I’m phillip “chance” chancellor’s wife. Chance was telling me how much you and your husband, errol, mean to him. Look, please, I need to know if you or your husband have had contact with chance in the last six months.

Kim: I’m sorry, but you have the wrong number.

Abby: No, no, no, no, no, wait! I have something for you, something that chance wanted me to make sure that you had.

Kim: I really think you have the wrong number.

Abby: Do you know chance has a new son?

Kim: I’m sorry, we must have a bad connection. I’m having trouble hearing you clearly.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Operator, yes, I need to reach an errol and kim dunaway in majorca, spain. Yes, please connect me.

[ Line ringing ] It’s a clue. I know it is.

[ Sighs ] No one can deliver your mom’s homemade short ribs.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Abby: Yes, hello?

Kim: It’s kim dunaway. I don’t have much time. I had to step outside to call you back.

Abby: Why?

Kim: So he wouldn’t overhear. Chance, he’s here. Alive, but he’s in a bad way. He needs you.

Abby: [ Gasps ] Oh, my god.

[ Laughs ]

Billy: How insane is this? We are being sued for an article that we did not intend to publish, and every single word in that article is true.

Lily: No, I’m not surprised by this next phase of their very well-calculated attack. Bury us in legal fees and meaningless lawsuits.

Billy: Lily, it’s not meaningless if we lose our credibility. It destroys our company.

Lily: And don’t think for a second that we convinced rey to back off his investigation.

Billy: No, I’m sure that he’s going to talk to michael right now. But I do believe that he trusted our story. I think that he — he thinks we were set up, and he told us go get any information we can on adam so we can nail him. So maybe it’ll work out for us this time.

Sharon: We were at dinner together when adam came over and said that billy had blackmailed newman media, so I have a sense of what’s going on here.

Rey: Mm-hmm, well, now adam and billy are lobbing accusations at one another and engaging me in the battle.

Sharon: Well, if this is just business warfare, can’t you stay out of it?

Rey: Yeah, I wish I could. But it seems that billy’s pushed his tactics into illegal territory. Look, I’m trying to stick to the facts and not let my views of either one of them cloud my judgment, but, frankly, neither one of them look terribly innocent in this mess.

Sharon: You think both sides have committed crimes?

Rey: Well, there’s evidence against billy, but he’s also brought up some pretty valid countercharges against adam. He just hasn’t been able to prove it yet.

Sharon: Well, I don’t know what to say or think about any of this. You convinced me to stay out of the conflict between billy and adam, so maybe now it’s my turn to do that for you.

Rey: Yeah, I wish I could, but it’s my job. It’s my duty to follow up and get to the bottom of whatever’s going down between these two.

Sharon: No, I realize that, but I’m worried about you because if you’re right — and i am willing to believe that victor and adam would go to extremes to damage billy’s reputation — but wouldn’t your reputation be damaged, also, if you didn’t arrest billy?

Rey: Well, I didn’t say i wasn’t going to. I just don’t want to jump the gun. I want to talk through all these things with the da before I make any moves. And quite frankly, I’d like to end this war, not facilitate it, that’s all.

Sharon: Well, I admire your attitude, but did you ever consider that maybe it’s not your job to find a peaceful solution?

Lily: Look, relying on rey is not a viable strategy. We have to do everything that we can to defend ourselves.

Billy: Maybe we can try and get a newman onboard. When I finally talked to victoria, she was furious at me. She called me every name in the book and she demanded to know how this happened. She doesn’t know what they’re up to.

Lily: Or maybe she’s in on it. Look, I have to call the legal team back.

Billy: Victoria, I need you to, um…help me understand something. I need to know what ashland’s motivation is here because he is lying about his shady past and doing everything he can to destroy my company. And I need to know if you are on board at this.

Lily: Can we file one even though we don’t have any evidence that gaines is lying? Yeah, but locke confessed to the newman family, so maybe we can get one of them to go on record and tell the truth, you know? Would that work? No, I know, I know that — i know it’s probably unlikely, you know? We don’t — we — we need the evidence that, you know, that he’s lying, but we don’t have it. So —

[ Sighs ] Yeah, of course. I mean, we’ll keep searching. You know, we don’t really have any other choice.

[ Sighs ]

Louise: While the baby’s napping, I’ll run to the chancellors’ house and grab some onesies and his mobile.

Devon: Perfect. Perfect, perfect. I want to thank you, too, for being so flexible and being able to work here until abby gets back. I do appreciate it.

Louise: Oh, of course. It’s my job to take care of that little angel, wherever he is.

Devon: Oh, well, thank you so much. And also, you can take your time today, too, ’cause I’m not gonna leave for a few hours, so dominic and I will be just fine.

Louise: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: There you go. See you soon.

Abby: Devon, knowing dominic is safe with you is the only way I can do this. And I do need to do it. Not just for me, but for dom. Please tell him I love him more than anything in the world. I’m afraid this is gonna take longer than I thought.

Devon: Abby, what the hell did you do? Unleash the freshness…

Devon: Denise, hello. This is devon hamilton. I am, uh — I’m once again asking you to come out of retirement because I need your help. I need to find my friend, abby newman chancellor.

Victor: My daughter abby is missing. I need you to find out where she has gone and I need you to do it fast. Is that clear? Okay.

[ Cellphone rings ] Yes? Send him in.

Billy: We need to talk.

Victor: Well, now, billy boy. I wondered when you were gonna show up.

Billy: I bypassed the other two minions and I came straight to the source.

Victor: Ah.

Billy: Because, really, this is about your hatred for me anyway, isn’t it? Your son is nothing but a runt who’s along for the ride.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Adam has plenty of his own vitriol for you. As does ashland locke. In fact, you seem to collect enemies the way some people collect stamps.

Billy: Here’s the plan. It all stops. All of it. Your attacks, everything. You convince ashland to withdraw the lawsuit, and I step down from chanccomm.

Lily: Excuse me. Have you seen billy abbott?

Ashland: Don’t tell me billy’s skipped town already. He can’t take the heat?

Lily: Why are you doing this? Why are you trying to ruin us? Like, is this sport for you? Like, what do you gain from this? And I actually defended you to billy. And now I wish I never had.

Victor: Ah, billy boy. Why would you fold so quickly? You’re a gambler. You must have really had a bad hand.

Billy: I walk away, I leave chanccomm for lily to run. She doesn’t deserve to be punished like this. I’ll take the hit.

Victor: Really?

Billy: You’re getting what you want, victor. I’m down on the ground, you’re rubbing my face in the dirt. You want me to say it? I will, okay? I failed. Couldn’t hack it with the big boys. You win.

Jack: Chance is gone? Killed while working undercover?

Ashley: I’m afraid so.

Jack: When?

Ashley: A few days ago, in valencia, spain. Christine came by to tell us in person, and we’ve all been reeling ever since.

Jack: Oh, my god, abby’s got to be devastated.

Ashley: It’s been excruciating. She’s been in so much pain, jack, and there’s nothing I can do to help her.

Jack: My heart goes out to her. I wish I’d known this. I would’ve been here to help.

Ashley: I’m sorry, I know. We couldn’t tell you any sooner because the spanish authorities haven’t been able to recover a body.

Jack: Wait, then chance is —

Ashley: He’s just presumed dead, but they did find some of his personal effects in the rubble. They found his watch. They found his wedding ring.

Mariah: Um, well, is the baby doing okay? Can I see him?

Ashley: He’s not — he’s not here.

Mariah: So abby took him with her?

Ashley: No, actually, the baby’s gonna be staying with devon for a bit.

Devon: Come on, buddy, you can do it. Give me a “B.” Give me a “U.” Give me a “R.” Give me a “P.”

Dominic: [ Burps ]

Devon: Hey! There you go! Good job, man. That was great. Oh, hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were up.

Devon: Oh. I think he’s settling in pretty nicely. Barely woke up last night. And he’s so much calmer than he was at the mansion.

Amanda: Think that abby made the right decision bringing him here. You know, this is exactly what he needed — a nice, calm routine.

Devon: Yeah. I’m just happy that she trusted me.

Amanda: She’s so lucky to have a friend like you.

Devon: Just, you know, the fact that she even got to the point, though, of actually coming and leaving him with me just goes to show how much pain she’s really in, though.

Mariah: Why would abby leave the baby with devon? When was this decided?

Ashley: She made the decision on her own without consulting anybody else. Victor and I found out after the fact.

Ashley: Honey, for whatever it’s worth, I haven’t heard anything like that from her. I think it was just natural for her to reach out to devon.

Jack: Yeah, makes all the sense in the world. Those two have been close for years. They’ve come to rely on each other.

Ashley: Yeah, and since we found out about chance, you know, devon’s been incredibly supportive and he’s great with the baby, so please don’t take this personally.

Mariah: No, no, of course not. I just went through my own trauma recently, and I get where abby is coming from. Sometimes you just — you need to take a break.

Mariah: Well, I’ll — I’ll probably check on devon and the baby before I go to work.

Jack: Yes, and I have somewhere I need to be. I will get the news to billy, okay?

Lauren: Poor nick and phyllis. I really feel for them.

Michael: I know, so do I.

Lauren: I wonder what happened.

Michael: I was a little curious about that myself. I mean, it wasn’t their usual spectacular blow-up. No cheating, no big scandal.

Lauren: No outside forces pulling them apart. Maybe it just fizzled.

Michael: At least they don’t seem bitter.

Lauren: No, and I assume it’s more about who they are as people and what they want in a relationship.

Michael: Well, that would certainly be a vastly more mature way to end a love affair.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Michael: Although probably no less painful.

Lauren: You know, sometimes it’s those quiet realizations that just sneak up on you bit by bit that are just so devastating. You know, maybe they felt like they were better as friends and parents than lovers.

Phyllis: Um…the huevos rancheros or blueberry pancakes.

Phyllis: ‘Cause I know you. You know, you’re a creature of habit. You only order two things on this menu. The other day, you had the bacon waffle. I know all your habits.

Nick: Yeah, I do only order those two things. Guilty as charged.

Phyllis: “What?” This. You know, us being pals and buddies. I don’t think we can get past this tension.

Nick: Yeah, I don’t know. It’s gotten crazy. I don’t know who’s telling the truth anymore.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] What does victoria say?

Nick: Haven’t talked to her since the story came out.

Phyllis: Oh. She’s giving you the silent treatment?

Nick: No, things are definitely better between us. Just trying to stay out of the mess, you know? I think it’d be for the best. Billy has not been able to do that, and he’s getting burned now, big time.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? For months, I’ve been telling you to stay out of the mess. For months, I’ve been telling you to ignore your family’s lunacy. And now, all of a sudden, staying out of the mess seems like a great idea. Wow, awesome. Awesome. That’s incredible.

Moses: Wow. I thought I was dreaming about a baby crying last night. That was real.

Devon: Yeah, man, it was real. It was — he had some things to get off his chest around 2:00 A.M. Did we keep you up?

Moses: No, no, it wasn’t a problem, but why is he here?

Devon: Abby needed my help with him because she asked if i can watch him for a little while while she’s dealing with the loss of her husband.

Moses: Oh. Okay. No offense, but do you even know how to take care of a baby?

Devon: Yes, I know how to take care of a baby. Of course I do. I used to watch after the twins now and then. Do you know how to take care of any kids or babysit?

Moses: Uh…no, not — not anyone this little. What a sweet face.

Devon: Hmm.

Devon: What?

Moses: Dominic just looked at me and he totally has your eyes.

Devon: Really?

Moses: Yeah, no one’s ever mentioned that before?

Nick: I, uh — I talked to summer. I told her that we weren’t together anymore.

Phyllis: Yeah, she called me after you talked. She wanted to see how I was doing. She wasn’t smug. That was great. I mean, she didn’t think that we would last from the beginning, so…

Nick: Yeah, I remember that.

Phyllis: Yeah. She was sad. Um…but her wedding was magical. We had fun, right? That was fun.

Nick: Yeah, I’m really glad we got to share that. I mean, what more could parents want than to see their kids happy?

Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, she’s gonna be okay, right? I mean, she hasn’t learned from us, has she? We’re not gonna pass that on to her, our confusing relationship.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] She’s gonna be just fine. Really proud of that kid.

Phyllis: I am, too. So I didn’t tell her about chance. I know that the abbotts are sort of keeping it quiet, and i didn’t want it to get back to jack, you know, through the grapevine.

Nick: I’m assuming ashley’s gonna be handling all that very soon, if she hasn’t already.

Phyllis: She needs to.

Nick: Yeah. Alright, I, uh — I got to get to a meeting. Thank you for having breakfast with me.

Tessa: So I just re-signed with devon’s label.

Noah: Where you should be. Congrats.

Tessa: Thank you. It has set all kinds of great things in motion. For starters, I am releasing my first full-length album.

Noah: Wow! That’s — that’s incredible, tess.

Tessa: Thank you. Oh, it’s so much more work than putting out a single or an ep, but I — I’m really excited. Which is where you come in.

Noah: Me? How’s that?

Tessa: I would like you to design the cover.

Noah: Um, I mean, I’m incredible flattered that you’d ask.

Tessa: And devon is totally cool with it. He loves your work.

Noah: Yeah, that’s — that’s great to hear. It’s just, um…

Tessa: Uh-oh.

Noah: I’m used to having total creative control. And I’ve worked with devon before, and he’s great with artists, you know, has a great respect for the whole creative process.

Tessa: But…?

Noah: [ Sighs ] But I just got done working with my grandpa and adam on some design stuff for newman media, and, you know, they were kind of just breathing down my neck the whole time.

Tessa: Okay. Yes, but victor and devon?

[ Both laugh ] Come on, there’s on comparison. It’ll be a totally different experience. Okay, just listen to the album, see if anything sparks for you. I’m really proud of what devon and I have put together, and i think you’re gonna want to be a part of it.

Tessa: Okay, I will send you the files right now.

Devon: I take it abby told you that dominic was here?

Mariah: Uh, actually, ashley told me. She seemed a little taken aback that abby didn’t ask her or victor to take care of the baby.

Devon: Yeah, I mean, I was surprised, too. You know, abby just showed up to my door.

Mariah: How did she seem? I mean, I can imagine she wasn’t in a great state of mind if she felt like she couldn’t take care of the baby.

Devon: Yeah. I mean, I was — it was tough for her to admit that, but i think she left relieved knowing that he’s gonna be looked after while she’s getting the help she needs.

Mariah: How are you doing with all of this?

Devon: I’m doing alright. I am. Thank you for asking. He’s doing fantastic. He pretty much slept through the whole night. He finished his bottle this morning, and he’s just so much calmer than he was at the mansion. You’re in a good mood, aren’t you?

Devon: Really are.

Mariah: Actually, no. She left the house before anybody woke up, and nobody has any idea where she is. I tried to reach her, but she’s not answering any phone calls and she’s not at society.

Dominic: [ Cooing ]

Mariah: Oh, do you want to be a part of the conversation, too? You do? Well, that’s great, because i love talking to you. Do you have any idea where abby might be?

Devon: No, I don’t, but she did mention last night the idea of getting out of town.

Mariah: Out of town?

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Mariah: Without telling anybody where she’s going or for how long?

Devon: It was just a thought she was having. There was no definitive plans.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Nick just left.

Jack: I just saw him walk out.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] We had a friendly breakfast.

Jack: How did that go?

Phyllis: It was fine. It was civil. It was fine.

Jack: Yeah, I’m not really feeling in the mood to socialize. I just got some news about my family that has shaken me up.

Phyllis: Uh, yeah, I know. I’m sorry to hear about chance. I really am, and, you know, i was there from the beginning, seeing those two, you know, develop a relationship, and i think that if anybody was gonna have a happy ending, it was definitely those two.

Jack: My heart just goes out to her. I…I know you think of her as a spoiled heiress, but she has had more than her share of heartbreak, terrible loss, real betrayal, and…I was so happy that she’d fallen in love with this guy. Seemed like he was a man that could help her trust in sustained happiness again, and…

[ Sighs ] And now she’s lost him.

Phyllis: Hey. You feel things deeply, and i know how broken up you were when kyle and summer broke up, and you’ve really been there for me, whether I deserved it or not.

Jack: What else would you have me do? Turn my back?

Phyllis: Yeah, but what about you? You know, you need someone to lean on. And I want you to know that i will always, always be there for you.

Amanda: Oh, what a wonderful surprise, running into the two of you.

Jack: Ashley just told me the news about chance, and i’m pretty devastated.

Michael: Now, the defense will probably rest after sutton’s testimony. Then there’s closing arguments and jury deliberation, which i hope won’t go on too long.

Amanda: Look at you, you seem confident.

Michael: Mm, well, everything has gone well thus far. I’m getting some vibes from the jury. They do not like sutton. They don’t want to see him get away with this.

Amanda: I really hope you’re right. But let’s not forget, sutton is a career politician, extremely good at playing to an audience. I almost fell for his act myself, so I know how effective it can be.

Michael: Yes, well, the big difference would be you didn’t have me by your side to counter sutton on all his lies and evasive maneuvers, but the jury will.

Tessa: We haven’t done the final mix yet, but you should be able to get the vibe of the album from what I sent you.

Noah: Cool.

Mariah: Hey. Hi, guys.

Tessa: Hi.

Noah: Hey.

Tessa: What’s wrong?

Mariah: I just came from visiting dom. He’s at devon’S.

Tessa: Oh. Well, what is he doing there?

Mariah: Abby feels like she can’t adequately take care of him right now, which i completely understand, so she left him with devon.

Noah: Yeah, I can’t believe abby has to face this. I just feel so bad for her.

Mariah: Evidently, I wasn’t even considered to take care of him, even though I offered. Nobody trusts me anymore.

Tessa: Well, you know, i think it’s less that and more abby just trying to be sensitive after everything you’ve gone through.

Mariah: And what’s more, abby might have left town this morning without telling anyone how long she’d be gone for. I mean, you can’t just do that when you have a child, you know?

Noah: Do you know for sure that abby left?

Mariah: No, but nobody knows where she is, she isn’t answering her phone. What if there is an emergency?

Tessa: Well, you know, let’s take it one step at a time. Maybe take a few deep breaths. ‘Cause if abby’s gone, it’s only been a few hours, so there’s no real emergency quite yet.

Mariah: Okay, but if you were a mother, and even if you couldn’t take care of your child for whatever reason, you would still want to be close, right? To make sure that things are okay? I know I would.

Noah: It’s pretty hard for any of us to put ourselves in abby’s place.

Tessa: I feel like I can. Well, when mariah was missing, i couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like if she never came back. I would’ve lost my mind.

Mariah: I have to remember that everybody handles grief differently. But if abby did leave town, isn’t that just a little irresponsible?

Ashley: So I thought I’d see how the baby’s doing.

Devon: He’s doing great. He’s taking a nap right now upstairs. Abby left me with the baby monitor and anything else i could possibly need, so we’re good.

Ashley: Good to hear.

Devon: Yeah. How’s she doing, though? ‘Cause mariah came by and told me that she took off this morning.

Ashley: I haven’t heard from her, so I checked out her room and now I’m worried.

Devon: Why are you worried?

Ashley: I think she packed a bag. Toiletries are missing. Some clothes are missing. So I called the grand phoenix, i called the athletic club, just to see if maybe she checked in there for the night to get her head straight. She’s not registered at either place, at least not under her own name.

Devon: Well, listen, last night, she did mention getting out of town.

Ashley: Did she say where she might go?

Devon: No, she didn’T. It was like a passing thought she was having, and I didn’t think she was serious about it. But it kind of sounds like that’s what she did.

Ashley: Yeah, I think you’re right.

Devon: I wish she would’ve told somebody.

Ashley: Abby doesn’t behave this way. Clearly, she’s not herself. Motrin works fast to stop pain where it starts.

Lauren: You seemed worried when phyllis was leaving earlier. I assume it’s about her breakup with nick. So sad.

Jack: Yeah, we were all rooting for them to work things out, but they’d been building toward this for some time now.

Lauren: Hmm. I gather she’s been confiding in you.

Jack: Well, I provided a friendly ear, a sounding board, someone who knows her worst instincts and can warn her not to give in to them.

Lauren: You can warn her, but will she listen?

Jack: You know what? I think you’d be surprised. She has handled herself with real grace and poise.

Lauren: Do you think you can be objective with her? I mean, phyllis is your ex.

Jack: I’ve been a friend to her when she needed one.

Lauren: Good.

Jack: I take it, then, you disapprove of anything more?

Lauren: Look, I love you both, but to repeat the mistakes of the past? Those were tough times. She caused you a lot of anguish. I mean, the fact that you two are even friends today, I mean, that’s a miracle.

Jack: You know what? We’ve all grown older and wiser.

Amanda: I don’t know all of the missing details, but, objectively, I would say that you have a deep connection with jack. You know, and he’s been a huge part of your life all of these years. And you’ve told me how much you still care about each other, despite your rocky past. So, phyllis, have you considered the possibility that jack is more than a friend to you? So maybe you’ve never fully gotten over him.

Phyllis: I love you, too. That’s never gonna change.

Jack: Well, thank you. It’s — it’s not the same thing, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Rey: Are you sure you want to stay even with them a few tables over?

Sharon: I meant what I said when we walked in. I have zero desire to go someplace else.

Rey: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: You know what? Matter of fact, it’s nice to see adam out for a change, having a good time, even if it is with sally spectra. But I’m not gonna worry about her motives anymore. Not my problem. But judging by your expression, you’re the one who’s bothered. Would you like to go someplace else?

Lily: So you made up the whole thing?

Gaines: That’s right.

Billy: The story about camilla rhodes leaving ashland nothing in her will.

Gaines: Lie.

Lily: And ashland forging a letter to steal her fortune.

Gaines: Lie.

Billy: I don’t believe you.

Gaines: It’s the absolute truth.

Billy: It can’t be.

Gaines: Well, I don’t know what else to do to persuade you that it’s true, but I put one over on you.

Billy: No, no, no, no. That doesn’t make sense.

Lily: So you went all the way to italy to drop a bomb on ashland’s wedding over a story that was a complete fabrication?

[ Scoffs ] I’m sorry, I’m not buying this.

Gaines: Well, it didn’t need to be true to bust up the wedding. Right? Locke would’ve been publicly humiliated, and I would’ve left the burden on him to clear his name. That’s why I went.

Billy: But you had the proof. The original letter from camilla rhodes before she died explaining that she’s leaving nothing to ashland in the will.

Gaines: Yeah. Well, it was a fake. I had it made. A guy I know in atlantic city. You thought it was real. Good. I guess I got my money’s worth.

Lily: Wait, so if — if you won’t back up these claims, then it looks like the entire chanccomm story is a lie.

Billy: Except it’s not.

Lily: We won’t be able to defend ourselves in a lawsuit. Ashland’s lawyers will bury us.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart.

Nikki: How is abby doing?

Victor: Hmm. How is abby doing? Not well.

Nikki: Oh, dear. Well, that’s to be expected.

Victor: Yeah. Tell you one thing, grief can cause all kinds of bizarre behavior in people, can’t it?

Nikki: Yes, especially when the loss happens so suddenly, like it did with chance. It’s very overwhelming. She’s gonna need some time.

Victor: Yeah, and I’m gonna give her all the help she needs, you know? But I’m a little concerned about her after what she did this morning.

Billy: Don’t worry. Chanccomm’s not gonna be buried, ’cause he’s lying through his teeth. Aren’t you? The second that article is released, you struck a deal with victor, adam, and ashland to save your own skin. They’re paying you right now to say it’s all a lie, but it’s not. Ashland already copped to forging the letter. He admitted to victoria that he committed a crime. He’s not gonna do that if it’s a lie. And he’s been paying you blackmail money for years. The truth is, ashland forged that letter. He stole his mentor’s estate. And when you found out, he paid you to keep it quiet. It’s as simple as that.

Gaines: Well, you’re gonna have a hard time proving that’s true, but there’s one thing that’s easy to prove — that letter is a fake. And you didn’t have it authenticated, did you? Hmm? No. Test it. The ink, the paper — you’ll see. It’s nowhere near 30 years old.

Lily: [ Scoffs ] I’m sorry, this is crazy. I mean, you went through these extremes to get the upper hand on ashland. Really? A forgery of a forgery? I mean, something is not right here.

Billy: You didn’t go to these extremes by yourself, did you?

Lily: Wait, you think he had victor and adam help him or — not back then, but recently?

Billy: I don’t know. I mean, maybe he didn’t escape this tuscan wine cellar by himself. Maybe victor and adam let you out when you agreed to go along with their elaborate scheme. You can stop me at any time if I’m getting too warm.

Lily: Yeah, but if that’s true…

Billy: Then victor and adam put this whole thing in motion.

Billy: And it also explains why you caved so easily when i said I wasn’t gonna release the article. You had a big deal planned with the newmans, didn’t you?

Gaines: Well, I can neither confirm nor deny.

Billy: You are a slippery son of a bitch.

Gaines: Careful, billy. You’re in enough hot water as it is.

Billy: Tell me what their next move is.

Gaines: I have no idea, but i am done. I am out of here. I am going far, far away, and this time, for good. And, hey, billy, as far as the deal between us, you don’t owe me anything.

Billy: Oh, thank you for that. You stabbed me in the back and you try and destroy my company? That’s very sweet of you.

Gaines: Don’t mention it.

Lily: Why did you even come here in the first place? Just to rub it in our faces?

Gaines: Maybe.

Lily: You are so twisted.

Gaines: Probably, but, hey, what good is a win if you can’t gloat a little bit?

Billy: Oh, this isn’t a win. Don’t kid yourself. Yeah, you may be walking away with a little bit more money, but victor, adam, and, more importantly, your mortal enemy ashland, they still got power over you. They still hold the upper hand.

Gaines: Yeah, well, hopefully, all that newman cash will ease my pain. Anyway, goodbye. Good luck. You’re gonna need it.

Lily: [ Sighs ]

Rey: I’m not gonna leave the restaurant where my sister’s empanadas are still on the menu because of adam.

Sharon: I’m so glad the new chef kept them on the menu. I have missed lola’s empanadas. Have you talked to her recently?

Rey: It’s been about a week or so.

Sharon: How’s she doing?

Rey: She’s doing well. She likes the work. She’s reconnected with old friends, making new ones.

Sharon: And I’m sure it’s easier dating without her overprotective policeman brother hovering.

Rey: Oh, come on, I was never that bad.

Sharon: Mm…

Rey: Okay. Maybe I was.

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Rey: I miss her.

Sharon: I do, too. We all miss her.

Rey: Don’t you think it’s strange that adam is so happy? Why is he in such a good mood?

Sharon: It is strange, i agree.

Rey: I mean, we both read the article about locke that was published today. He’s on the board of newman media at the center of this huge scandal. He’s gonna drag adam’s company through the mud, so why does he seem to be having the time of his life?

Adam: Don’T.

Sally: I — I’m sorry.

Rey: What’s wrong with this picture?

Sharon: Do you really want to spend time psychoanalyzing adam?

Rey: You’re right. The less time we spend thinking about adam, the better our lives will be.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You know i do.

Sally: You don’t have any feelings about her being here?

Adam: Look, we’re not gonna go there, okay?

Adam: So, stop.

Sally: Another forbidden topic. You’re just determined to be a man of mystery, aren’t you?

Adam: Are you kidding me? I am an open book. Go ahead, ask me anything.

Adam: Go for it.

Sally: You don’t even know what I was gonna ask.

Adam: No.

Sally: The mysteries just keep on coming. No one can deliver your mom’s homemade short ribs.

Victor: So, abby packs up the boy and his things and takes him over to devon’s house.

Nikki: What?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: She’s gonna be clear across town from her baby?

Victor: That’s where she wants him right now.

Nikki: But what if… I don’t understand — I have a lot of questions right now.

Victor: So do I. However, ashley and I decided not to interfere with our daughter’s decision. That’s — she has a right to do what she wants. She’s the mother, you know?

Nikki: Oh, well, that was very reasonable of you.

[ Sighs ] I-I hope that this arrangement doesn’t last very long.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Abby left it open-ended.

Nikki: You know, I’ll bet that she’s gonna start missing dominic like crazy, she’s gonna want him to be by her side.

Victor: I totally agree with you. But apparently she’s not in the frame of mind right now to take care of the boy.

Nikki: It’s good that she recognizes that, but there are certainly other options.

Victor: Yeah. I could’ve jumped in and taken custody of the boy.

Nikki: Really?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: How could you have done that?

Victor: Ashley and I were designated as legal guardians of dominic in case something happened to chance or abby.

Nikki: I see. So you could’ve stopped her from taking the baby to devon’s, but you wanted to honor her wishes.

Victor: Exactly. Let us see how it all works out.

Sally: Okay, so we can’t talk about this and we can’t talk about that, and discussion of that other thing, you know, is completely out of the question. So where does that leave us? Want to talk about the weather?

Adam: Oh, pretty chilly outside. I mean, maybe it’ll be warmer tomorrow.

Sally: Okay, good, yeah. That’s a start. Scintillating. What about the local sports team?

Adam: Ugh, no.

Sally: Ooh, thanksgiving. What are you favorite foods?

Adam: I actually — I can make a mean pumpkin pie. My mother’s recipe.

Sally: Do tell.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I wrote it down for her when i was a kid. I still have it, actually. It’s one of the few mementos that I’ve kept. It’s a 3×5 notecard with my 9-year-old handwriting on it.

Sally: That’s so sweet.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Why didn’t she write it herself?

Adam: She was blind.

Sally: Oh, wow, I didn’t know that.

Adam: Yeah. She cooked and baked mostly by memory. But every once in a while, she would have me come in and help her, and I always liked that. Thanksgiving on the farm was a big deal. Even those years when it was just the two of us, she always wanted to make it special.

Sally: So when you were a kid, did you ever —

Adam: Wait, wait, hold that thought. I have to talk to someone. I want to hear exactly what happened.

Gaines: Well, there are no big surprises. Billy and lily reacted just as suspected. They figured you and your old man were behind the publication. Billy stomped and yelled a bit, but he knows he’s beaten.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Good. Good, good, good. But you’re not done.

Gaines: [ Sighs ] Yeah. Don’t remind me.

Adam: Well, just execute the next step of the plan, and then you’re free.

Sharon: That was such a good kale salad.

Rey: That dressing’s my mom’S.

Sharon: I didn’t know that.

Rey: Oh, yeah. Lola “borrowed” a lot from mom.

Sharon: Well, I guess that’s what makes a great chef. You take a little from here, you take a little from there, and then you make it your own. Isn’t that right, rey? Rey.

Rey: Uh, we still talking about the salad?

Sharon: [ Laughs ] I was, yes, but I don’t feel like I have your full attention.

Rey: I am sorry. My mind wandered. That’s jesse gaines. I recognize him from the photo in the article. Whatever’s going down between the two of them can’t be good.

Billy: We got played. Victor and adam, they really one-upped us here.

Lily: With some help.

Billy: Yeah, sure, ashland and gaines gave them what they wanted, what they needed, but victor and adam, they were the masterminds.

Lily: I was talking about you.

Billy: What is that supposed to mean?

Lily: I mean, you were basically victor and adam’s accomplice. All they had to do was put some bait on a hook and cast a line, and you couldn’t help yourself. You had to take the bait. They knew you wouldn’t be able to resist going after newman media and locke, and they were right about you.

Billy: I’m sorry, do you remember that they declared war on our company, trying to destroy everything we’d built? I was trying to protect us.

Lily: Do you remember I told you to try another option, like asking victoria to intervene? But you had too much pride to ask your ex for help.

Billy: I asked victoria. She didn’t get back to me. You went to her, asked her to intervene. How did that go?

Lily: Well, at least I tried something other than blackmail, which was your only plan, and it failed spectacularly.

Billy: Yes, lily. I am responsible for this mess, okay? But you are partly responsible, as well.

Lily: Sorry, why is that?

Billy: Because you told me to do whatever it takes. Your mission:

Nikki: I agree with you, but I can also see abby’s point of view. She feels that she’s not up to looking after dominic right now.

Victor: [ Sighs ] I think it would’ve best for dominic to stay with us here at the ranch for a week or two.

Nikki: Absolutely.

Victor: I mean, I respect and I really like devon. He’s a very nice man, reliable man. I trust him. But dominic is my grandson.

Nikki: True.

Victor: Okay.

Nikki: But devon does have a special bond with the baby, and abby has seen that. So if having devon look after the child right now gives her a sense of peace, that’s the most important thing right now.

Victor: You kind of approve of her decision?

Nikki: Well, of course i would much rather have dominic be here…

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: …But I can see why she made the choice she made.

Victor: [ Sighs ] I guess so can I. So what I will do is everything I can for my daughter.

Billy: Again, it sounds like you’re making unfounded accusations. There is a world of difference between blackmail and a business negotiation.

Rey: Well, why don’t you tell me what gaines was using as leverage against locke, and i can decide for myself.

Lily: Okay, look, the truth is —

Billy: Gaines is an asset. Okay? He is a source, and we protect our sources because, truthfully, this story could be huge for us.

Rey: Okay. Listen, billy, if you’re withholding information that could be linked into an official investigation into ashland locke, that’s a crime. I’m assuming this has something to do with some criminal behavior on ashland’s part.

Billy: We understand that the statute of limitations ran out a long time ago on anything he would’ve done illegal.

Rey: Yes, but the information could still be used in civil suits depending on what it is.

Billy: Exactly. Or tarnish his reputation.

Rey: Which could damage the newman media and newman/locke merger.

Billy: Business pain. But again, nothing illegal. And since gaines wasn’t the victim of foul play, there’s really nothing for you to concern yourself with.

Rey: I hope not.

Billy: Thanks for coming, detective. You have a good night.

Rey: Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, those two meeting.

Sharon: Well, maybe there’s a logical explanation.

Rey: I can’t think of one. I originally thought that billy was using this gaines guy as a bargaining chip to blackmail victor and adam. But maybe adam made his own bargain with gaines.

Sharon: I don’t know why any of this matters.

Rey: The man who destroyed the reputation of victoria newman’s new husband is hanging out with her brother. Something’s wrong here.

Sharon: Can you please put the detective badge away for the evening? Not everything is a crime in the making.

Rey: Well, apparently, locke communications group was born out of a crime. So I can’t help wondering what’s going on.

Sharon: Look, adam and victoria have had a history of animosity between them, and they may have had a thawing lately, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were on opposite sides again.

Rey: Okay. Familial relations aside, locke is a board member of newman media, and this article is gonna affect adam’s company, so why does he seem so calm?

Gaines: I’m gonna do this one last thing, and then I am done. Nothing more, you got it?

Adam: I think I understand.

Gaines: You know, I am sick of you and your whole sordid crew. You and your dad and locke. As far as I’m concerned, you all deserve each other.

Adam: Yeah? What do you deserve, gaines?

Adam: Well, the camera crew’s ready and waiting back at the office, so why don’t you stop whining and go put on the performance of your life?

Lily: Okay, yes, you’re right, I did say, “do whatever it takes,” but that was a knee-jerk, angry reaction after trying to broker a truce with victoria and adam and telling you a million times that blackmail isn’t the answer. Okay? I regretted it right away. Never should’ve said it. We should’ve never let gaines back into our lives.

Billy: It doesn’t matter if we kicked gaines to the curb or not. Victor and adam had this planned all along. They already flipped gaines to their side, knowing that they were gonna hack into my e-mail to authorize the release of the story.

Lily: Why did you even assign the article in the first place? We were never gonna publish it.

Billy: To make the threat seem real. At least then we’d have a story ready to go, okay? But again, it doesn’t matter. They would’ve hacked into chanccomm’s system and made it look like we released the story either way. Those two bastards were two steps ahead the entire time.

Lily: Okay, look, I’m sorry, alright? I didn’t mean to jump on you. It doesn’t matter whose fault it is or —

Sharon: Hey, you’re the one that said we have better things to discuss than adam and ashland and billy, so let’s just enjoy our evening and block out the rest of the world.

Rey: Deal. I’m sorry I got caught up in whatever adam and gaines were up to.

Rey: And thank you for reminding me of what really matters. My attention is right back where it should be — on my beautiful, brilliant, charming wife.

Adam: Why do you want to know?

Sally: As I said before, i love my job, and that is why i am very protective of newman media and I don’t want anything to hurt it. Or you. So whatever you’re up to, be careful.

Adam: I’ll do my best. I’m just not used to loyalty like this from employees.

Sally: Yeah, well, it’s not completely altruistic because i would really hate to have to go find another job.

Adam: Well, I appreciate the candor, as well.

Billy: Maybe we’re not in as much trouble as you think.

Lily: And why do you think that?

Billy: The lawsuit from ashland. It’s not the first, it won’t be the last. It’s the nature of the business. We already won the suit that victor launched at us because of the exposé on adam.

Lily: That’s because we had facts on our side. We don’t have that luxury right now, especially if gaines is telling the truth about lying about the whole thing, which it sounds like he is.

Billy: But it doesn’t matter if that letter is fake. Ashland committed a crime. We know that much is true, okay? He wouldn’t have confessed to victoria if it wasn’T. He wouldn’t have paid gaines all that money over those years. He wouldn’t have gave him a penny if he didn’t think that he had the original letter from camilla rhodes. Every accusation in that article is true. And I think we need to stand by that.

Lily: Yes, but we need to be practical. We can’t just take a stand on principles. There’s way too much at stake.

Billy: Believe me, I know what is at stake. I know what we could lose here. That’s why I want to keep fighting. We are in the right here, lily.

Lily: No, okay. The smartest thing that we have to do right now is get ahead of the blowback. Print a retraction, let people know that, you know, we were hacked and the article got released without our approval. That’s the best chance we have against a lawsuit.

Billy: Yeah, I mean, that’s the prudent move.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Lily: What? What is it?

Billy: [ Sighs ] Maybe your plan to save our company is too late.

Lily: Oh, no. You don’t get much time for yourself.

Adam: Thank you. And thank you for offering to help with my plan. It’s very generous of you.

Sally: Well, I meant every word of it.

Adam: I have no doubt. I am very grateful that you’re in my corner.

Adam: There’s nothing more to be done with our move against chanccomm. The wheels are already turning and they are spinning very fast.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You have nothing to worry about. Everything is going according to my well-conceived plan. And very soon, we won’t have to worry about billy abbott or chanccomm ever again.

Gaines: I would like to publicly recant everything attributed to me in the recent chanccomm article regarding ashland locke. The letter quoted in that article was also a fake. The fact is, I had a letter fabricated from camilla rhodes explaining why she left her precious ashland nothing in her will. But those were my words and not the words of mrs. Rhodes. The fact is, I have held a long-standing grudge against ashland locke, a hatred, really, so I made up those allegations and I told them to billy abbott and lily winters at chanccomm. Now, I still hate ashland locke, but he is, in fact, a victim in this matter because those lies should never have been published. Now, I regret my part in this deception, but I believe that chanccomm should have executed their due diligence and fact-checked what I told them. And if they had, this article would never have been published. But they didn’t do any digging into my claims. And I believe they had ulterior motives for that. I feel, ethically speaking, that I had a moral obligation to come forward with the truth because we, as a society, deserve more from our institutions.

Billy: They have made ashland locke bulletproof. I mean, it doesn’t matter what comes out about that letter anymore. It’s been discredited in the public eye. He’s gonna come out smelling like a rose.

Lily: Yep. And they’ve painted us as immoral, reckless villains.

Adam: Well, why don’t you go ahead? I’ll — I’ll take care of the check. I’ll see you in the morning.

Sally: You gonna linger here a little longer? Why is that?

Adam: I just have to have a word with detective rosales for a moment.

Sally: Ooh, sounds official. Getting more curious by the minute.

Adam: I will see you in the morning.

Sally: Alright, see ya.

Adam: Bye. Good evening. Can I buy an after-dinner drink?

Sharon: Well, um…

Adam: Oh, don’t worry, i won’t be joining you. I’ll just have the bartender send it over.

Rey: Why you got to rush off? Got to go meet up with your buddy, jesse gaines?

Adam: [ Scoffs ] He’s no buddy of mine, believe me.

Rey: I can’T.

Adam: Well, of course not. But what you witnessed was just purely a chance encounter. I took the opportunity to rake him over the coals for what he’s trying to do to ashland.

Rey: [ Laughs ] That seemed like a pretty gentle raking. And we just happened to see his press conference at your office. So was that really just a chance encounter?

Adam: I think there is something that you need to know, detective.

Gaines: I feel, ethically speaking, that I had to come forward with the truth.

Nikki: You know all about this, don’t you?

Victor: My business to know.

Nikki: What about victoria and ashland? Were they in the loop?

Victor: Mm-hmm. Ashland was in on it from the beginning. Mm-hmm. But don’t you worry, neither ashland nor victoria will be hurt by this.

Nikki: How can you be so sure?

Victor: There was a risk of ashland’s story being exposed by billy boy abbott on his terms. That would have been very bad for both of them, and for our company. So adam and I stepped in. We got rid of the problem.

Nikki: But you see, I do worry because I know that everything gaines just said is a lie, and what he originally said about ashland’s past is true.

Victor: Well, the problem is that billy boy abbott was gonna use that against us, and that was gonna be a mistake.

Nikki: I think that you often underestimate him, and the problem is that he is a lot like you, especially when he is focused on something.

Victor: What do you mean billy boy abbott is a lot like me? What are you talking about?

Nikki: Okay, what I meant to say is that when he feels like he’s in a corner, he’s gonna go on the attack, just like you. And for that reason, I think this situation is far from over.

Billy: We are in the right. We have truth on our side. We’re not the bad guys here.

Lily: Billy, you tried to blackmail victor and adam.

Billy: That was to protect our company, okay? I was trying to stop them from coming after us. It was a noble cause.

Lily: It doesn’t matter. It’s still blackmail. As soon as you got with gaines and tried to use that against them, we were no longer the good guys.

Billy: I thought you weren’t looking to cast blame here.

Lily: No, I’m — I’m not, I just —

[ Sighs ] I had a bad feeling about this. I knew there was something too convenient about his escape story and showing up on our doorstep.

Billy: Yep. I wish I would’ve listened to you. But the good news is we know everything they have against us now. I mean, there’s nothing else they can throw at us.

Lily: I disagree. I think there is more to come. I think there’s an even bigger shoe that’s about to drop.

Sharon: Adam, we just wanted to have a nice, quiet dinner. I don’t think there’s any reason for you to discuss your meeting with gaines.

Adam: I’m sorry if I intruded on your evening. Uh…but this will just take a minute, and then I will leave. It’s important.

Rey: Okay. What’d you want to tell me?

Adam: Well, when chanccomm published that nasty article, billy contacted me, threatening to release it.

Rey: What sort of threat?

Adam: Look, I’m not gonna lie, newman media has been looking for ways to edge out chanccomm. We’ve been aggressive. My father doesn’t care for competition.

Rey: Yeah, I’m sure he doesn’T.

Adam: Yeah, so billy came to us, trying to use the article as leverage. In other words, he tried to blackmail us. Now, that can’t be legal, can it? Oh, right. The patent.

Lily: I don’t know. I mean, someone on the staff who decided to take it upon themselves?

Billy: Why? We need answers, and we need them now.

Lily: I know exactly where to start.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

[ Knock on door ]

Adam: Come in.

Sally: Is this a bad time?

Adam: Oh, I didn’t realize you were still here.

Sally: I wanted to wrap up a few things, but I am not here because of the fashion platforM.

Adam: Oh.

Sally: I just read the most fascinating yet unsettling article on one of the chanccomm websites about ashland locke. I presume that you are aware of it?

Adam: I, uh, just finished reading it myself.

Sally: And?

Adam: Don’t work too late, okay? If you will excuse me, there is somewhere that I need to be.

Sally: [ Scoffs ]

[ Cellphone thuds ]

Lily: So, we asked you here because you’ve been working on this story since the beginning, and we’re just wondering how this article got published when neither billy or I signed off on it.

Marty: I got an e-mail from billy authorizing its release.

Billy: I never sent that, marty. Lily and I haven’t even seen the story. We would never sign off on something with these kind of ramifications without seeing it first. You didn’t think to question why it wasn’t going through the proper channels?

Marty: I got a message from my boss that seemed pretty urgent, so I did what I was told. I’m sorry for any confusion.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Lily: Yeah, no, look, it’s — it’s fine. We’re — we’re all very confused, so, um — actually, can you forward me that e-mail that was sent to you?

Marty: Of course.

Lily: Thank you. Um, okay. Well, thank you, marty. That’s gonna be it for now.

Billy: Thank you. Well, clearly I was hacked. Who would do that? Who could do that? Not many people know that we’ve been even working on this story.

Lily: We need to figure out who knew and who would want it out there.

Ashley: Hi, abby. It’s your mom. I just got home, and I was so surprised it’s quiet here. Nina’s in bed, and you and the baby are gone. I was wondering — where’d you go? Um, just want to let you know that I’m gonna be up, okay? I’m gonna wait for you so I can see you when you get in. I love you, honey.

Amanda: Can we, um, get you anything?

Abby: No, um… no. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for — for barging in like this. I’m sorry.

Amanda: It’s totally fine.

Devon: Yeah. Just tell us what’s going on.

Abby: You told me to reach out if and when I needed help, and…I do, so here I am.

Devon: Okay. Well, I’m glad you did. What’S…

I was — I’ve been thinking myself that it’s probably the best thing that he gets out of that mansion and away from all that heavy energy over there, so — and not to mention you deserve some time for yourself, too.

Abby: Well, I don’t know how long it will be because… I’m just in such despair. I think I need to take some time away from genoa city to heal. That way, I can come back and be the best mom to dominic.

Devon: Hang on a second. You’re thinking of leaving town?

Rey: I bet I can guess what you’re looking at.

Sharon: Oh. Hi.

Rey: Hi.

Sharon: Yeah. Um, billy and lily really decided to come out swinging. I mean, although this article is primarily about ashland, clearly they’re gunning for the newmans, too, by association. I was really hoping that both sides would find a way to keep the peace.

Rey: Yeah, me too. You know, I went by chanccomm earlier, and billy admitted the hush-hush story that he had in the works was actually about locke and gaines. He didn’t seem inclined to release it, though, at least not anytime soon. He said he was gonna use it as a private bargaining chip, which I’m pretty sure translates to blackmail to keep newman media in check.

Sharon: I guess something must have changed his mind.

Rey: Yeah. I’m wondering exactly what that was.

Billy: Gaines?

Lily: Is he in there?

Billy: Gaines! God!

Lily: He’s gone?! I thought you told him to stay put until he was allowed to leave town.

Billy: That was the plan.

Lily: [ Sighs ]

Billy: He’s gone. Everything’s gone.

Lily: I knew this was gonna happen. I knew he would go rogue. Why would you think that you can keep him in line? He has no allegiance to you. He probably decided to take matters into his own hands and expose ashland’s past.

Billy: When I talked to him, I told him that we have more leverage if we keep all information about ashland private, and he agreed.

Lily: Yeah, or so he said.

Billy: Look, I know him, okay? He is a self-centered piece of work, but he’s not a fool. He knows if he goes public with this, victor is gonna come after him with everything he’s got. So is ashland. I mean, he’s got to be running scared right now.

Lily: Yeah, no, I’m sure you’re right because he definitely got in over his head.

Billy: Look, if he is fed up with me, why not just go public the way that he threatened to do it in the first place? Why hack my e-mail, make it look like it came from us? He could have got paid by anyone for all the information about the infamous billionaire ashland locke.

Lily: Okay, I’m not ready to write him off. You could be right. But if it wasn’t him, then who was it?

Billy: I’ll give you two guesses.

Victor: Well done, my boy.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Everything went off without a hitch. It’s a perfectly executed plan.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Adam: And you. You played your role perfectly.

Abby: No, um… you know, that was a thought that popped into my head. But I have so many thoughts going on. I mean, I don’t even know what to do at this point.

Devon: No. I understand. But you realize that there’s a ton of people right here in town that love you that you can lean on.

Abby: Yeah. Yeah, I know. I just — I’m — I’m not in any condition to be the mom that dominic deserves right now. So I thought that maybe leaving town might give me a chance to heal, you know? And in the meantime, it’ll give me peace of mind knowing that he’s here with you. Well, with both of you. Amanda, oh, my gosh, I — I’m sorry. I — moses lives here, too, and I’m talking about…

Devon: Oh…

Abby: …Leaving a baby here with you for who knows how long. I’m sorry. Please —

Amanda: No, abby, abby, i want you to know that I would love to have dominic here. I want what’s best for everyone involved, including that sweet baby, okay?

Devon: And I know, too, that moses would feel exactly the same way. So you don’t have to worry about anything. You can leave dominic with us as long as you need to.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Thank you. I’m so grateful to both of you. And I’m gonna have the nanny come by and help, and obviously you’ll need more supplies than what’s in the diaper bag, so i have so many more supplies in my car. I can have the doorman bring them up, and if you need anything else —

Devon: Abby, you know I can get whatever else we need. I’m fine. I just want you to promise me that you will focus on taking care of yourself.

Abby: Okay.

Devon: Okay?

Abby: [ Exhales sharply ] Okay. My little man.

[ Sniffles ] You are gonna stay with devon for a little bit. Your favorite person. And he is gonna dote on you like nobody’s business.

[ Sniffles ] And I am going to think of you every second of every day.

[ Sniffles, sighs ] Um, thank you.

Devon: Of course.

Abby: Thank you for being the best friends and just being so understanding.

Devon: Of course, abby.

[ Breathes deeply ] Okay.

Devon: We’ll take good care of him.

Abby: [ Exhales sharply ]

Billy: [ Sighs ] It seems like a very personal attack. It was my e-mail that was hacked.

Lily: Well, how secure was your password?

Billy: Very secure — a bunch of random numbers and letters. I’m not an idiot. I’m not gonna use my kid’s name.

Lily: I didn’t say that you were.

Billy: It just means that someone went through a lot of effort to make this happen, someone with motive, someone with the means to pay someone else to do their dirty work, and I’ll give you two names — victor and adam.

Lily: I know, billy. They’re always your usual suspect. You’re jumping to conclusions.

Billy: Lily, victor declared war to my face. Adam told me that they were coming after us. When I threatened him with the information that I have on gaines, he was very blasé about it, almost taunting me to come after them with it.

Lily: Okay, it doesn’t add up. Even if they don’t care how the article affects ashland personally, they definitely care about newman media and newman/locke. So, why would they shoot themselves in the foot?

Gaines: It’s not as if I had much choice in the matter or in the role I was given to play.

Victor: I don’t think you’re in a position to complain, okay?

Gaines: Listen.

Adam: I — I wouldn’T.

Victor: I don’t have time for this, son. I have some other things to deal with, so you take care of him, alright?

Adam: Hey, don’t give it another thought. I’ll handle things here.

[ Breathes deeply ] Well, the article is really blowing up online. All sorts of sites are picking it up. So, um, why you so blue? Didn’t you say you wanted everybody to know the truth about ashland?

Gaines: Yeah. Not like this.

Billy: Well, your other option was for us to release all the dirt we have on you.

Gaines: Again, not much of a choice.

Adam: Well, you saved your own skin. There’s no shame in that. Now get over it because we’re not finished yet.

[Music: “I swear”]

Sharon: The fact that billy would throw a grenade like this just shows how drawn he is to chaos.

Rey: Yeah, I wish I could disagree with that. But speaking objectively, the article is simply recounting facts about ashland. It’s full of evidence that locke committed fraud to steal and inherit camilla rhodes’ estate. Now, he risked exposing himself all those years ago when he committed that act. It looks like his past is finally catching up with him.

Sharon: It’s just shocking to hear that ashland created an entire empire based on a criminal act? I mean, I know he’s always been known as a ruthless businessman, but this is different. What do you think will happen to him now?

Rey: Well, the statute of limitations has long past, so he can’t be charged criminally. But civil suits can still be filed, perhaps by the will’s actual beneficiaries.

Sharon: Well, I’m sure that’ll happen soon. I wonder how this is affecting victoria’s marriage. Do you think that she knew about ashland’s past?

Rey: I have no idea. She’s either finding out about it now or she has been complicit in keeping it secret.

Sharon: Well, I hate to think about johnny and katie getting caught in the cross-fire between billy and ashland.

Rey: Yeah, well, let’s hope that victoria and billy can protect these kids because it’s gonna get really ugly, especially if ashland has the support of victor and adam.

Sharon: I can already imagine the newmans are circling the wagons, planning their retaliation, probably as we speak.

Adam: You know, we really have to stop meeting like this.

Sally: Well, you told me not to work too late, and I wasn’t ready to go home.

Adam: Yeah, I was a little too wired up to go home myself.

Sally: You seem to be having a good evening.

Adam: Mm, as a matter of fact, I am.

Sally: It’s interesting, considering the article you were trying so hard to avoid discussing earlier — you know, the one that billy fired off like a weapon designed to inflict serious damage.

Adam: Look, I wasn’t trying to get out of talking about it. I just, uh, had somewhere i needed to be.

Sally: Well, ashland can’t be too happy about it. It does not look good for newman media — or newman/locke, either, given that ashland built his entire empire on illegal activity.

Adam: Well, sometimes things aren’t exactly as they appear.

Devon: Got it?

[ Chuckles ]

Neil: Business? So you can put it away at the end of the day? Or you can go on vacation or you can quit. But a child? That’s day in, day out, every second of every day. It’s boring, it’s busy, it’s emotional, man, and it’s very humbling. And the love? You can’t even imagine the size of that love until you’re right there, smack in the middle of it. And if you’re lucky, you’re gonna have someone that you trust, that you can share that load with. Just the three of you in a little tiny family fishbowl that you created, you never could have anticipated it. So, no, I don’t think you have it all taken care of with some contract.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Neil: Hey.

Devon: Hmm?

Neil: What if that child really needs you? I mean, devon, really needs you? Huh? Illness, disappointments, hurt, failures, and then there’s the sweet stuff. First word, first step, high-school graduation, college acceptance. You know something? You get your priorities real clear really fast.

Amanda: Look at you. You’re a natural.

Devon: Hey. I don’t know about being a natural. I’ve just had a lot of practice the last few weeks.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Well, you definitely have a full house now.

Devon: Yeah. Hey, I appreciate you being as supportive as you’ve been. But I know that you didn’t sign up for this when you moved in here. So I do want to ask you — you really okay with this?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Abby: Uh, he’s staying at devon’s tonight.

Ashley: Why?

Abby: And he will be staying there for the foreseeable future.

Ashley: Was this devon’s idea?

Abby: [ Sighs ] No. It was my idea. I went to him when it became painfully clear that I can’t take proper care of my son right now. I just — I need to get myself together so I can be the best possible mother to dominic.

Abby: Dominic wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for devon and mariah. And because of that, we share this bond that I — I can’t even really describe. Devon was there when dominic came into the world. He was one of the first people to hold him. He has been a constant presence in his life. And I know that dominic is still small, but I have to believe that when he hears his voice or sees his face, he feels comforted and at ease.

Ashley: I hear what you’re saying, and I totally appreciate it. And I know that devon has been incredibly supportive since we heard about chance. But can’t he have a more active role in dominic’s life without the baby leaving your home and upsetting his environment and his routine?

Abby: This is not a good environment for dominic to be in. I mean, I hate to say that, but every inch of this place is filled with sorrow and sadness. My intensity. Nina’s grief. And every single person that walks through the door is carrying their sadness over chance with them and their worry about me, and that is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Ashley: We’ve all made sure the baby was taken care of, though, honey. You know that.

I know that you and your father want to ruin chanccomm, and this whole, I assume, ashland take-down was a preemptive strike on billy’s part. So, what’s gonna happen to newman media now that all this is out in the open?

Adam: You know, I could take your panic personally. It’s kind of an insult on our friendship.

Sally: And why is that?

Adam: Because I thought there was a certain trust between us.

Sally: I have a lot of trust and faith. But I like to back it up with certainty.

Adam: Sally, do I look like a guy whose world is crumbling around me?

Sally: I’m not gonna get a straight answer, am I? Alright, your confidence is allaying my fears, but not my curiosity. I still want to know more about what’s going on in that mind of yours. But I won’t ask because I know it will be futile. So I give up…

Adam: Oh!

Sally: …For now.

Adam: Thank god! Thank god.

Sally: So, why don’t we have a drink together in honor of whatever it is that put that smile on your face?

Adam: I think that sounds good.

Lily: Are the calls and texts ever gonna stop?

Billy: Not anytime soon. The story is trending now. I got three missed calls from victoria. I can only imagine what she’s gonna say.

Adam: Look, I don’t let a bunch of gossip dictate how i live my life. I thought you were the same way.

Sally: I am. I just would hate for there to be any more fallout from our association.

Adam: Hmm. By “fallout,” you mean chelsea?

Sally: I knew that she called as soon as that trashy site posted those pictures.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: How’d that go?

Adam: Um, I didn’t talk to her at first. But, um, I cleared things up later.

Sally: Well, that’s a relief.

Adam: Even though chelsea and I are no longer romantically involved, I still want to keep the peace. It’s important to me to keep the lines of communication open because of connor. And also I hope she’s gonna be working for the fashion platform soon.

Sally: Yeah, yeah. Chloe and I have been talking about that.

Adam: Mm-hmm. The two of you would be working pretty close. So I think it’s best if we keep things clean and above board. I just — I don’t want to give her any reason to suspect there’s something more going on between us than there is.

Sally: 100%. I couldn’t agree more.

Abby: Of course I’m gonna miss dominic terribly. But I know this is in his best interests. And isn’t that what being a parent is all about — putting your child first?

Ashley: It is, honey. I just don’t want you and your needs to get lost in the process.

Abby: They won’T. So, dominic is going to stay at devon’s for the time being. That is my choice. No second thoughts. So, as his mother, that’s my final decision.

Victor: Sweetheart, how can we help you? We want to help you, after all that you’ve gone through.

Abby: Look, I would love to have that conversation, but, um, later. I’m gonna go get some rest.

Ashley: Yes, go get some sleep, honey.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Good night.

Victor: Good night, sweetheart.

Ashley: I love you.

Abby: I love you both.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] That’s the last thing I expected to hear when I came to check on her.

Ashley: Yeah, I was thrown, too — probably not as thrown as you, though. Devon had mentioned that he thought he should take responsibility for dominic temporarily.

Victor: When did he do that?

Ashley: Earlier today. It was a private conversation. I don’t think he had an agenda. I do believe that abby made this decision on her own.

Victor: Ah, well, I respect that he wanted your take on things.

Ashley: I’m just worried, though, in her emotional state that abby’s not thinking things through.

Victor: I agree with you. I think she’s going to live to regret not being closer to dominic.

Ashley: Well, you know what? I think what we have to do now is just leave it alone. And if she starts to show signs that she’s upset ’cause the baby is not here, we’ll just bring dominic home. I mean, this is not set in stone.

Victor: That’s right. You and I will do everything we can to help her through this.

Ashley: Of course we will.

Victor: Okay. I got to be on my way, okay?

Ashley: Okay. I’m gonna go to bed. What a day it’s been, huh? Everyone remembers the moment they heard…

Amanda: Yeah?

Devon: Uh-huh. We’re gonna have so much fun, you and me, while you’re staying here, starting tonight. We’re gonna go through this bottle, and then we’re gonna do some burping and then maybe do some laps around the penthouse until your eyes get too heavy and you fall asleep. And then, you know, when you wake up, I’m gonna have a brand-new song ready for you. Yeah. You had enough, huh?

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Sally: So, did you really grow up on a farm?

Adam: Yep.

Sally: Okay. Don’t take this the wrong way, but, um, you don’t give off that vibe.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Hey, I know how to milk cows, okay?

Sally: No, you don’T.

Adam: Yes, I do. And I know how to drive a tractor.

Sally: Okay, well, now you’re just showing off.

Adam: Do you have any special skills?

Sally: Mm. I can guess your weight,walk a tightrope, and juggle knives.

Adam: What?

Sally: My parents were carnies, and I learned a thing or two before I went and lived with my grams.

Adam: Okay.

[ Chuckles ] Okay, you just — you just get more interesting by the minute, don’t you? Okay, I have a question. You have to level with me because I’m curious.

[ Inhales sharply ] What’s in the funnel cakes? I mean, those things are just so wildly addictive.

Sally: Yeah, I’m having a hard time picturing the guy who introduced me to high-end single-malt scotch chowing down on what is essentially deep-friend sugar.

Adam: Hey, come on. In farm country, carnivals and county fairs — that was, like, the height of excitement for kids. And I was too young to be health-conscious, you know.

Sally: Okay, well, given that I grew up on nothing but cotton candy and corn dogs and lived to tell the tale, I doubt you did any permanent damage with a couple of days worth of junk food.

Adam: [ Laughs ] Wait a minute. Did your parents’ carnival ever go through kansas?

Sally: Um…I don’t remember. Why? Is that where your farm was? Are you wondering if we crossed paths as little kids?

Adam: I need to know this, okay? I got a perfect score on the ring toss one year, and I won the big — the big stuffed animal. But the people at the booth — they would only give me this tiny little cheap on.

Sally: [ Laughs ]

Adam: And I felt so cheated.

Sally: I’m sorry. That sounds like one hell of a villain origin story.

Adam: I-I need to make sure that your family wasn’t involved in this.

Sally: Honestly…it kind of sounds like something they might do. But there is no proof. So hopefully I won’t end up on your enemy list, next to billy abbott.

Adam: [ Laughs ] Not a chance.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Sally: I — maybe. We’ll see.

Rey: You want to go somewhere else?

Sharon: No, of course not. Why would I?

Adam: And you’re out there slinging corn dogs and…

Lily: Are you gonna let victoria know that you did not approve the article?

Billy: I’m not talking to anyone until I know who did this and we have a game plan.

Lily: Okay, well, we have to put out some sort of retraction immediately.

Billy: There’s no point. The genie’s out of the bottle. It’s not going back in.

Lily: It doesn’t matter. We can say that we didn’t fully approve the story or — or that, you know, the only reason why it was released is because we were hacked.

Billy: And we will look like a bunch of amateurs who are out of control.

Lily: We weren’t in control, billy. That’s the point.

Billy: One thing I don’t understand — why would ashland say, “get your team of lawyers ready,” when we all know that the story is true?

Gaines: Because the story is not true. I made the whole thing up in order to hurt you.

Adam: Alright, it’s time to pull the trigger and blow this thing wide open. I’ll call you right back. I am getting really tired of the way that you keep barging in to my office whenever you want.

Sally: Sorry for interrupting your call.

Adam: What do you want?

Sally: Call it intuition or blame it on the conversation we had with billy the other day, but I feel like something major is about to go down, something you’ve been planning behind your closed door.

Adam: Sally, what happens in this office, it’s none of your business.

Sally: But it is, because i work here. So tell me if I’m wrong, but it feels like whatever it is you’re planning is tied to you and your father wanting to do some major damage to billy abbott and chanccomm.

Billy: Rey, I thought we caught up on our small talk at crimson lights. What brings you by?

Rey: You know, something you said before that I just couldn’t shake.

Lily: This isn’t really a good time.

Rey: Well, it’s not gonna take long. Billy, if you prefer, we can talk about this somewhere else privately.

Billy: And why would I do that? Lily and I are partners in every aspect, and I have done nothing illegal.

Lily: You know, this is my office and I’m not going anywhere, so why don’t you get to the point, rey?

Devon: So I spoke with ashley about what’s going on with abby and the baby.

Amanda: Yeah.

Devon: Yeah.

Amanda: You told me you were worried that it might be bad for dominic to be surrounded by this much grief.

Devon: Yeah.

Amanda: So what was her take on it?

Devon: She told me that there’s enough support at the chancellor house for dominic and that he will get all the attention that he needs, and then she brought up the importance of having the baby there at the house with abby so that they can bond during these first few weeks.

Amanda: Did you come around to her way of thinking?

Devon: Uh, I mean, I see her point, but I’m — I’m, you know, concerned still.

Amanda: So what are you gonna do?

Devon: I don’t for sure, but I’m thinking that I might organize a meeting with victor and nina and ashley.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Grandparent gang, huh?

Devon: Well, yeah, I mean, they’re the people who are closest to abby right now, and i think that we can have a really good conversation about, you know, the best ways we can all protect dominic and still look out for abby and help her through this. I want to make sure that we’re all on the same page when it comes to being aware of abby being overwhelmed or dominic being affected by the grief.

Nina: Look at that. Fast asleep and already in dreamland.

Abby: Thank you.

Nina: Oh. You don’t need to thank me for anything.

Abby: Thank you for being so wonderful to the baby.

Nina: [ Chuckles ]

Abby: And to me, even though my emotions are all over the place.

Nina: I am so happy to be here. Giving all my love to you and to dominic, it’s a wonderful distraction for me. So how you feeling?

Abby: [ Exhales sharply ] Like I want to scream and cry, but if I can’t control myself, how am I supposed to be the mom that dom needs?

Nina: Abby, no one is expecting you to take care of dominic all by yourself right now.

[ Voice breaking ] I mean, you’re dealing with a terrible loss.

Abby: Oh, nina. You’re dealing with it, too.

Rey: My earlier conversations with billy set off some alarms. First he asked me to investigate a missing-perons case, and he’s pointing the finger at adam with no evidence. And then he claims it was all just a big mistake.

Billy: Yeah, I’m not seeing the problem here. I am saying that you were right. I misunderstood.

Rey: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Adam has that effect on people. You should understand that more than anyone.

Rey: Yeah, that’s the problem, billy. You never admit that you’re wrong, even when you are, and when I pressed you about this sudden shift, you avoided my questions, especially when i brought up whether this missing person had reappeared or not.

Billy: Okay, so because i don’t want to chit-chat or own up to my mistakes, that makes you suspicious?

Rey: I know a dodge when i see one. And you were eager to cut our conversation short at crimson lights.

Lily: Well, he was meeting me. I was having a caffeine emergency.

Rey: [ Chuckles ] Okay. Well, now I’m convinced that you both are hiding something because he said that the coffee wasn’t for you, but for some reporter he was working with about a story.

Billy: What exactly are you accusing us of?

Rey: I think you’re still on the trail of this missing guy, gaines, and you’re dead-set on pinning something on adam.

Billy: Look, even if I was, we’re not involving you. You should be happy about that.

Rey: Not if you think that involving the police was a mistake and you’re gonna handle whatever this is on your own. Because that’s always a very bad idea.

Abby: Please forgive me.

Nina: For what?

Abby: Because I haven’t given you the space that you need to grieve. I have been so overwhelmed with my own emotions that… chance was your son. You are struggling as much as i am.

Nina: I’m just not even sure that I’ve fully accepted death — his death myself. I mean, I can’t believe I’m never gonna hear him laugh again or see that beautiful smile that could light up the world.

Abby: It just doesn’t make sense. How can he be gone?

Nina: It just comes in waves, doesn’t it? I mean, one minute, it just seems unreal, like a nightmare, and the next minute, it’s just too real, it’s too hard.

Abby: I know.

Nina: [ Sniffles ] What you don’t know is how desperately I wanted to get on that jet to spain with you and tear that town apart looking for chance.

Abby: You did?

Nina: Yes. It took everything I had not to go, but [Sniffles] I just knew it was too important. You and I needed to stay and take care of chance’s little boy. Risking our lives is just the wrong thing to do.

Abby: Then what’s right?

Nina: I’m just trying to get through the next 30 seconds. And trying to help you and dominic, I know that’s what chance would want for me right now.

Abby: Yeah. Well, um, [Sniffles] You’re right. Because [Sniffles] I wasn’t being strong, I had a moment of weakness, but, no, I need to get it together. I need to get it together for my son. He’s depending on me.

Nina: No, I wasn’t suggesting that you were weak. Please don’t think that. You’ve been incredibly strong through all of this. I just mean that you don’t need to put so much pressure on yourself.

Devon: I completely get where ashley’s coming from about the baby needing to be at the house to bond with abby. I understand that. But victor and nina might have a different take on the whole situation, and I just want to hear everybody’s ideas.

Amanda: Yeah, alright.

Devon: I hear a “but.”

Amanda: Devon, I want to discuss something with you, but I really want you to receive it in the spirit that it’s being offered.

Devon: Well, of course. You can say anything to me.

Amanda: In light of recent events, I think it might be a good time to revisit the paternity and surrogacy contracts.

Devon: I don’t want to overstep them, though. Why do that?

Amanda: Just hear me out. Like I said, legally, you have no say where the baby resides or who looks after him.

Devon: Right, I know that.

Amanda: But here you are, trying to assemble the grandparents and hatch this plan for abby and the baby.

Devon: That’s ’cause I’m in a position to help.

Amanda: Exactly, I know, and I know you’re trying to help. But I feel like I need to remind you that, if anything happened to abby, that kept her from being dom’s primary caregiver, custody would naturally shift to ashley and/or victor. They would become his legal guardians.

Devon: Okay, yeah.

Amanda: Yeah, so I want to know if you would like to use this opportunity to change that. If anything happened to abby, would you, as the child’s biological father, want to be able to petition for custody of dominic? Frequent heartburn? Not anymore.

Devon: Yeah, no, I — I — I don’t want to revisit the surrogacy contract ’cause that’s just not where my head is at right now.

Amanda: Okay, maybe not right now, but what about down the road? You might feel differently.

Devon: Dominic is chance and abby’s child, and I have all the confidence in the world in abby as a parent and as my friend, so I don’t — I don’t want to petition the courts to change anything if it’s not necessary.

Amanda: Okay. Whatever you want.

Devon: I’m gonna go check on abby, though, before I reach out to the family.

Amanda: Okay. Well, I have plans with naya anyway, so…

Devon: Okay, I’ll walk you to your car.

Amanda: Okay.

[ Sighs ]

Devon: What’s the matter? Did you forget something?

Amanda: Yeah, um…my filter. Was I overstepping? I’m sorry. Sometimes I just — I get too deep into lawyer mode, and —

Devon: No, no, no, no. You know better than that. It’s fine. I know you’re trying to look out for me. And I also know that this whole situation resonates with you, especially now.

Amanda: Yeah, testifying at sutton’s trial, it — it’s brought up a lot of feelings that I thought that I had dealt with.

Devon: I’m sure it did. There’s no statute of limitations on grieving.

Amanda: You know, my father, he wanted to raise me. He did everything he could to find me, and he wanted me in his life, but he died before he even saw my face.

Devon: I know. And now dominic is gonna have some of that legacy.

Amanda: Yeah, but he will always know who his biological father is. That’s priceless.

Adam: Even if there was a plan to go after chanccomm, why do you care?

Sally: This is my job, and my newly relaunched fashion career hangs in the balance.

Adam: Okay. You’re being a little dramatic, and you’re making this all about you.

Sally: I happen to like my job very much, but it is a position that only exists because of newman media, so if whatever you’re doing blows up, it goes away. And I can’t go through that again. I finally found my place, and i feel like I’m terrified that it’s all about to disappear.

Adam: I would never let that happen.

Sally: I’m sorry for barging in here and for running my mouth, but I would rather speak up than stay silent and regret it forever while all of my dreams just go up in flames.

Adam: I promise you, there’s nothing to worry about.

Sally: Prove it.

Billy: I admire your cop radar, but let me be very clear. I am not gonna risk everything we built by going rogue and doing something illegal. So you’re wasting your time.

Rey: That’s it?

Billy: Yeah, that’s it. Look, you got bit by the same bug that I did, okay? Hoping that adam did something illegal and, you know, maybe this time we could put him away.

Rey: Billy, why are you letting go of your suspicions that adam had something to do with the disappearance of gaines? You were so certain of this the last time we talked.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Rey: Okay, something is going on, I’m sure of it. And if you don’t tell me, I’m gonna use that cop radar to figure it out.

Lily: Okay, let’s just tell him. Alright? He’s gonna figure it out sooner or later.

Nina: When I said that we have to be here for dominic, i didn’t mean that should pressure you into feeling strong or whatever. I just mean we need to lean on one another, you know? We’re a big, complicated mess of people who want nothing but the best for that little boy. And when one of us stumbles, there’s always someone there to pick them up.

Abby: But I don’t want to be a burden to anyone.

Nina: You’re not a burden. If anything, we don’t want to be a burden to you. You’ve got me. You’ve got your mom and dad and tessa and mariah and devon.

Abby: The baby chancellor crew.

Nina: Yes. We’re all here to take care of one another.

Devon: She’s absolutely right. We are. Hope you don’t mind, I let myself in.

Nina: Hi.

Devon: Hey.

Abby: Of course. Come on in.

Nina: Yeah. We’re family.

Devon: Do you have a second to talk, abby?

Abby: Uh, yeah, yeah. Nina, I’m sorry, do you mind?

Nina: No, not at all. I was just about to give dominic his bath. Is that okay?

Abby: Oh, I’m sure he would love that.

Nina: Okay, good. Hello!

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Nina: Hi. You want a bath? It’s bath time. Oh!

Abby: Babies love a good routine.

Nina: Yeah, so do I, especially at this moment. Okay. Let’s get a bath. You’re gonna be the sweetest-smelling little thing in all the world. Okay? Yes, you are.

Abby: [ Exhales sharply ] I wish I could be like that.

Devon: Wish you could be like what?

Abby: So sweet and loving and light. The way nina is. She finds joy in the smallest moments. Nina smiles at dom, and right now, all I can give him are my tears.

[Music: Sung by craig robinson]

Lily: Look, we may as well tell him, okay? We’re facing this corporate battle. We don’t want him to be suspicious of us. It’ll be a distraction when we already have our hands full defending chanccomm.

Billy: Well, rey. Guess your cop radar is bang on. Look, the truth is, gaines is alive and well. And he came knocking on our door.

Rey: Why? What does he want?

Billy: Protection. He’s got the goods to take down newman media and ashland, and he’s worried what the newmans will do to stop him.

Lily: He wants the security that chanccomm can provide, so billy and I are weighing our options.

Rey: Okay, well, how does gaines plan on taking down locke? I’m assuming it has something to do with this damning information you told me about earlier.

Billy: Exactly.

Rey: And when you say he wants protection, I’m assuming that means he wants you to publish this information.

Billy: We see gaines’ information as a bargaining chip to get the upper hand on newman media.

Rey: By “bargaining chip,” do you mean blackmail? Because, billy, that’s a crime. One that sounds like you’re ready to commit.

Adam: Sally, I don’t think that I need to prove myself to you.

Sally: It would be nice. I need reassurances.

Adam: Haven’t I shown up for you so far? I gave you a job when everybody told me not to. I took you to italy so you could get your dress on victoria before she walked down the aisle. I mean, I stood up for you when people warned me to walk away.

Sally: Well, I’ve done the same for you. Which is why I think you should let me in on whatever the plan is.

Adam: There’s no upside to that. So just stay in your lane, focus on the fashion platform, and let me handle the business.

Sally: So I shouldn’t worry my pretty little head about the fact that you want to bring chanccomm to its knees? We both know that billy abbott is not going anywhere without a fight.

Adam: Newman media is untouchable. Therefore, you are safe.

[ Sighs ] In fact, coming out of what’s in the works, we’re gonna be better and we’re gonna be stronger than ever.

Sally: But something is going down.

Adam: Yes. And it’s going to happen quickly, so all you need to do is take a deep breath and focus on what is coming down the pipe for you and chloe. But, sally, most of all, trust me.

Devon: Hey. I don’t know if I told you.

Abby: Thanks.

Devon: Yeah. Moses, he gave me this demo to listen to of some kid he knew back in new york, and he just kept pumping it up like he was the next best thing. And he had me listen to it and give him my honest opinion.

Abby: And what did you think?

Devon: I could barely get through it, it was so bad. He was — he was out of tune. The guy couldn’t rhyme. It was awful.

[ Laughs ]

Abby: That is so sad.

Devon: It was embarrassing.

Abby: No, that moses’ friend put so much time and energy into something. I mean, now his hopes and dreams are crushed. He had an idea of what his life was gonna look like, and all of that has been ripped out from under him.

Devon: Abby. Abby, it’s — he’s a kid. He’s a kid. He has time to improve and get better or find out where his real talent lies, and then he’ll have a great life. Doesn’t have to be a sad story.

Abby: I hope you’re right.

Devon: I am, that’s how it works. I’ve seen it a million times. You take your energy and you point it in another direction, and the universe notices.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: You don’t want to listen to my work stories, though, do you?

Abby: Look, I appreciate the distraction, but let’s get to the real reason why you’re here, ’cause you did not ask nina to leave so you could dish about some bad demo.

Devon: Yeah, you’re right. I didn’t do that. I came here so I could check on you and see how you’re really doing.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Well, um… I have my ups and downs, and i am exhausted, but I still can’t sleep, so I took one of those pills that nate prescribed me.

Devon: Did they work?

Abby: I fell asleep, but i slept through dominic crying for me. And I have no idea how long he was crying or how long he needed me. And I just — I woke up, and i felt like a failure. I felt selfish, and then, of course, I broke down again, and thank god nina was here. I mean, gosh.

Devon: The first thing you need to do is you need to stop calling yourself a failure. You’re not. And then you need to realize that chance was the love of your life, and you need to grieve him properly. And nobody is expecting this to be easy for you. And most importantly, you’re not alone. You’re not alone at all, so don’t feel like you are.

Amanda: Are you sure you’re up for this?

Naya: I’m fine.

Amanda: You really should have let me come to you.

Naya: It was important for me to come here, to get out of the house. I needed to talk to you without anyone else in the family around.

Amanda: What’s going on?

Naya: Imani filled me in on your testimony against my father.

Amanda: Well, I am sorry that it had to come to this, but i had to testify against sutton. I hope one day you can understand and forgive me.

Naya: Forgive you? I’ll do nothing of the sort. Amanda, I came here… to raise a glass to my brave daughter. For taking a stand against a man who controlled my life for so long and for getting justice on behalf of your father.

Billy: Again, it sounds like you’re making unfounded accusations. There is a world of difference between blackmail and a business negotiation.

Rey: Well, why don’t you tell me what gaines was using as leverage against locke, and i can decide for myself.

Lily: Okay, look, the truth is —

Billy: Gaines is an asset. Okay? He is a source, and we protect our sources because, truthfully, this story could be huge for us.

Rey: Okay. Listen, billy, if you’re withholding information that could be linked into an official investigation into ashland locke, that’s a crime. I’m assuming this has something to do with some criminal behavior on ashland’s part.

Billy: We understand that the statute of limitations ran out a long time ago on anything he would’ve done illegal.

Rey: Yes, but the information could still be used in civil suits depending on what it is.

Billy: Exactly. Or tarnish his reputation.

Rey: Which could be the newman media and newman/locke merger.

Billy: Business pain. But again, nothing illegal. And since gaines wasn’t the victim of foul play, there’s really nothing for you to concern yourself with.

Rey: I hope not.

Billy: Thanks for coming, detective. You have a good night.

Lily: [ Sighs ] So it sounds like you’re considering publishing the story even though we agreed not to. We said that gaines’ story about his escape from tuscany was shady, so I thought we were gonna hit pause until we figure it out.

Amanda: I was worried that you wouldn’t understand why i had to testify and that you would be angry with me.

Naya: You did the right thing.

Amanda: Well, I hope imani didn’t give you all the gory details.

Naya: She told the unvarnished truth.

Amanda: Hmm.

Naya: That you said richard was a threat to sutton’s reputation, that my father had richard’s brakes tampered with so that your father could never find you and your sister, that sutton tried to record you admitting that you were only testifying for revenge. But you said that you only wanted justice for your father, and that’s what compelled you.

Amanda: I wanted to speak for him because he couldn’t speak for himself.

Naya: You did what none of us could do. You stood up to the great sutton ames.

Amanda: I guess it was easier for me because I didn’t have a lifelong connection with him. You know, I just met the man, so I saw him for who he was, who he is.

Naya: And I want to apologize for that.

Amanda: For what?

Naya: For abandoning you. For not protecting you. For not being a mother to you and your sister.

Amanda: It’s okay, we don’t need to —

Naya: No, no. I do. I feel so blessed and undeserving. Not only did you let me into your life, you stood up for me. You spoke out for me when i couldn’t speak out for myself. And now you’re taking sutton head-on.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] I guess I’m the trouble maker, huh?

Naya: Good trouble. It would have been so easy for you to turn your back on me and the family when you realized what your grandfather had done. And I wouldn’t have blamed you one bit. But you didn’T. You were fearless. You fought for justice for your father. The father you never met because of me.

Amanda: No, it’s not your fault. It’s sutton’s fault. He made you give us away.

Naya: I — I can’t let him take all the blame.

Amanda: Oh, yes, you can.

Naya: I’m not the kind of fighter you are. I agreed to give up my babies. Despite everything, you opened your heart to me. Now all I want to do is heal my heart so that I can be a part of your life for a long time to come and get to know the incredible woman you are.

Devon: When I lost hilary, you know, my whole world imploded. And I — I could have lost anything else in my life — it could’ve been my money or my company, my house — you know, I can replace all that stuff. You can’t replace hilary. She was one-of-a-kind. And my whole world went dark when she died, and the same thing happened to me after neil passed.

Abby: It’s like you’re in this pit and you know that people are there trying to help you, but you can’t lift your arms to reach them.

Devon: Yeah, that’s a — that’s a perfect way to describe it. And I took myself through it afterwards. I — I — you know, I started doing things that I know I shouldn’t have been doing, and hanging out with people that I usually wouldn’T. And I would — I would mask my depression so much, I started having damn panic attacks.

Abby: Look, if you’re worried about me going down a bad path, it’s not gonna happen.& My son, he is depending on me. I need to stay strong for him.

Devon: I know. I know that you know that, and i also know you’re gonna get through this, abby. It’s just gonna take time.

Abby: How?

Devon: With the love and support of your friends and your family. That’s how you’re gonna do it, because that’s how I did it. And I tell you, I wish i would’ve turned to them sooner instead of thinking that I could do it by myself. ‘Cause truthfully, abby, nobody gets through a loss like this without help. And you’re so lucky that you have so many people to help you and to call you every day and to come and check on you. You got to take advantage of that. You really do, and you have to know that it’s okay to fall apart.

Abby: [ Sniffles ] Nina said the same thing, but I can’t help but think that chance would want me to be strong.

Devon: Okay, well, then, you know what? Be strong sometimes. And then don’t other times. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve. And there’s no timeline that you have to follow either. And I know that chance would want you to feel everything that you need to feel.

Abby: Well, you are right about one thing. I am not alone. I have my son, and he is my number-one priority. I have to put him before anything I am going through. Want your clothes to smell freshly washed

Naya: This is nice. Being out with you.

Amanda: I’m so glad that we could get together.

Naya: We need to do this more often.

[ Chuckles ] I just wish imani could have joined us. But there’s plenty of time for that when you two officially open your law practice.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Yes, that will be a big step for my sister and for me.

Naya: Must be nice. Oh, before I forget, um, I have a friend I want you to meet — viola. You’re going to love her.

Amanda: Oh, is she a paralegal or a law pro?

Naya: No, interior designer. For your office.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Seriously?

Naya: Okay, don’t say no until you can see what she can do. And I have some ideas of my own on how to make your office look professional and cutting-edge.

Amanda: Oh.

Naya: I’ll e-mail you some pictures.

Amanda: Okay.

[ Laughs ]

Naya: Don’t laugh. Appearances matter.

[ Sighs ] My two daughters are hanging out a shingle and starting their own law firm. You’re building this on your own and you’re beholden to no one. That matters.

Amanda: You know you could’ve done it too, right? If sutton didn’t control your entire life, if you weren’t living in his shadow.

Naya: But I’ve got two brilliant daughters sharing the spotlight.

Amanda: You’re not the same person that you were when we first met. You are courageous. And you are your own woman now.

Naya: Thanks to you. You changed me. You changed us all. Our family has lost a lot over the last year. But we have gained so much more than I ever could’ve imagined. Thank you.

Abby: It isn’t right that this is your first lesson, that life is unfair. Because the world is filled with so much love and beauty, but with your father gone, all I can feel is pain. Devon: Hey.

Amanda: Hey. Mm.

Devon: How’d it go with naya?

Amanda: Oh, my — way better than I had expected.

Devon: Yeah?

Amanda: Yeah, she — she gave me this sincere and profound apology.

Devon: What did she apologize for?

Amanda: For abandoning me, for letting me grow up alone, for not being a mother. She says she wants to make up for lost time, and I know I told you that she apologized before, but this time, it was different. It was — it was deep and it was real.

Devon: Yeah. I mean, that’s huge for her to do that. How do you feel about it?

Amanda: I don’t know. You know, I think I’m still trying to process all of it, but it touched me, it really did.

Devon: Good. Good. I mean, I think you guys just kind of — your relationship’s gonna get better and better the closer you guys get.

Amanda: Yeah. You know, I never could’ve imagined any of this. Going into practice with my little sister, you know, being someone’s daughter, dating this incredible man. I mean, this is a strange new world for me.

Devon: But you’re loving it, right?

Amanda: Oh, I could get used to it. So, tell me, how did things go with abby?

Devon: Uh…things went alright.

Amanda: Yeah?

Devon: Yeah. We were able to talk for a while. She’s still having a hard time opening up, but I got a better sense of where her mind is at, at least.

Amanda: Well, devon, she has a lot going on, that’s for sure.

Devon: I know that. We talked a little bit, just about my own grieving process, and, you know, I told her that she shouldn’t expect just to bounce back right away from this. And she’s got to be okay with leaning on the people that want to be there for her. But…I hope she heard me.

Amanda: Yeah, but that’s hard for a lot of us. You know, being able to accept support, especially when we need it the most.

Billy: You’re right. Something’s not right.

[ Sighs ] Why — why does adam not care that we have gaines or the original letter where camilla says she’s leaving nothing to ashland in her will?

Lily: Well, you gave newman media a deadline, and we are about to hit it.

Billy: , But I’m not backing down, which is why I didn’t want rey in here breathing down our neck. I wanted him the hell out of here.

Lily: I think he’s gonna be keeping a close eye on us anyway.

Billy: There’s no doubt about that.

[ Cellphone chimes ] I just need a minute. I need a minute to figure out what our next play is.

Lily: Billy.

Billy: Yeah?

Billy: Why?

Lily: Did you really release the story about locke forging the camilla rhodes letter behind my back?

Billy: Of course not.

Lily: Well, it’s been published.

Billy: Where?

Lily: On one of chanccomm’s news sites. I’m 53, but in my mind

Devon: Abby, what are you doing here?

Abby: You’re right. I can’t do this alone.

Billy: Lily, I did not authorize anyone on our staff to publish this story.

Lily: Well, I mean, could it have been some kind of mistake or miscommunication?

Billy: Not even our senior editors have the authorization to publish something like this without our approval.

Lily: Well, I mean, it’s out there. All of it. What ashland did to steal camilla rhodes’ inheritance, the letter from camilla that proves it — everything is in this story. I mean, chanccomm just launched a rocket at ashland and the newmans, and you and I had nothing to do with it. How the hell did that happen?

Lily: Did you hear back from victor or adam?

Billy: Nope, not yet. But I’m not worried. They know they have until 6:00 P.M.

Lily: How can you not be nervous?

Billy: Because I know what adam is thinking. This is a classic poker game. He thinks that I’m bluffing. He doesn’t think that we have gaines or the letter that implicates ashland. And he’s panicking right now. He’s on third-level thinking. I’m already on fourth-level thinking. Do you know what I mean?

Lily: No, I don’T.

Billy: In short, I am a step ahead of him. I don’t even know if he’s told victor that we have the goods on ashland and we’re threatening to expose him.

Lily: No, he definitely hasn’T. Otherwise, victor would have sent victoria here immediately to stop you. I’m surprised adam hasn’t already done that.

Billy: I think adam is actually looking for gaines. He thinks he’s on a beach counting his money somewhere. And right about now, it’s probably a good time to tell him that he’s mistaken.

Lily: Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. I think we need to just take a pause.

Billy: Why would you say that? I thought you were more than willing to do anything we needed to do to stop them from coming after us.

Lily: No, I know. I know what I said, and I meant it when I said it, but I was very worked up after seeing adam. And now that I’ve had some time to calm down and think about it, I — I still think that this is a bad idea.

Adam: Alright, well, thanks for the help again. Well, billy hasn’t left the building yet. He’s still in the office.

Victor: Who was that on the phone?

Adam: My source.

Victor: Oh. Okay.

Adam: I’m sure billy’s trying to strategize, cooking up some elaborate plan with a double bluff and misdirection. He’s probably working hard right now to convince lily that his plan’s air-tight.

Victor: To be frank with you, I’m a little disappointed in lily. I’m stunned that she is going along with billy’s schemes, you know? She’s neil winters’ daughter. I thought she had more sense.

Adam: Well, I think she does. She’s definitely the smarter of the two. You know, when she came over here to try to settle things, I offered her a job…

Victor: Uh-huh.

Adam: …When chanccomm falls apart, but, uh, she wasn’t interested.

Victor: Really? Not very smart on her part. She’s gonna regret that decision very soon.

Abby: Come on, dominic. Come on, baby. My sweet boy, mommy loves you, but please, please go to sleep. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Yeah, yeah, I just need a little break, okay? Shh.

Nina: Is everything alright?

Abby: Yeah, yeah. Um, dominic needs a nap, but i can’t seem to calm him down.

Nina: Well, um, you want me to give a try? Sometimes a different pair of arms will do the trick.

Abby: You know what? Um, he just ate, but maybe he’s hungry. Is there any way you could warm up a bottle, please?

Nina: Yeah. Absolutely.

Abby: Shh, shh, shh.

Nina: Hey, um…do you want maybe I should call in the nanny?

Abby: No, no, no. Just the bottle, please.

Nina: Okay. Well, you want me to take him to the kitchen so you can have a little bit of a break?

Abby: I can handle this. Just the bottle, please.

Nina: Okay.

Victor: So, what did billy give us as a deadline?

Adam: 6:00. If you want, I can play along and call him to, uh, negotiate to make him think that we’re stalling.

Victor: Mnh-mnh. Won’t be necessary.

Adam: No. But it would be fun to get his hopes up.

Victor: We’ll be hearing from him soon.

Billy: Okay, I understand you are not comfortable using someone’s past against them as blackmail.

Lily: No, especially when the person is the stepfather to your children.

Billy: I am not planning to reveal what ashland did in his past, okay? I made a promise to victoria, and I plan to be a man of my word.

Lily: Well, victor and adam don’t think you will be.

Billy: Of course not. They think I’m opportunistic and disloyal, and I’m gonna use their feelings about me to my advantage.

Lily: Okay, well, that doesn’t mean that we have to deal with someone as disloyal as gaines. We can take on the newmans ourselves.

Billy: You tried to talk to victoria about that. It didn’t go so well, did it?

Lily: Okay, no, I don’t have all the answers, alright? But I do believe in what we’ve built here as a company, and i think that we can handle anything they throw at us.

Billy: That’s the thing. I don’t want them to throw anything at us, which is why we need to strike first. Best-case scenario — they call a cease-fire. But they’re not gonna do that without incentive.

Lily: I’m just worried that you putting this pressure on them is gonna anger them even more and make them come at us even harder.

Billy: Okay, but I think you’re underestimating how badly they want to protect ashland’s reputation and, by extension, newman media’s reputation. Look, the fact is, locke can’t be charged for his past crimes, okay? But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t open them up to a whole slew of other lawsuits and, in turn, make them vulnerable.

Lily: Yeah, no, you’re right. I mean, they would be swamped by litigations, and it wouldn’t be good for harrison to grow up with that kind of legacy.

Billy: Exactly. And adam and victor are gonna do everything they can to avoid that, which is why they’re gonna keep this quiet.

Lily: But what if gaines doesn’t go along with it? All he wants is to destroy ashland. I mean, he could go rogue.

Billy: I can control gaines.

Lily: Really? Like you did in tuscany?

Billy: That was a misunderstanding. I am confident that I can get gaines to go along with this plan, which is exactly why i need to go talk to him right now.

Lily: Okay, well, I think i should go with you.

Billy: No. That’s not a good idea.

Lily: Well, what if I insist?

Devon: Hey. Is this a bad time?

Billy: No, not at all. It’s a perfect time. I’ve got to run out, but lily’s looking forward to catching up with you.

[ Smooches ] I’ll see you in a little bit.

Devon: What’s going on?

Sally: Ashley abbott. Wow, you are the last person i expected to see.

Ashley: I don’t think you expected to get caught.

Sally: I wasn’t up to anything. I work here now.

Ashley: Yeah. I heard.

Sally: Well, I was just waiting for adam to get done with his meeting with victor so he could sign these purchase reports for our upcoming photo shoots.

Ashley: I have some things to discuss with victor, and it might take a while, so I suggest you find something else to do. Elsewhere, perhaps.

Sally: Yes. Thank you for the suggestion.

[ Knock on door ]

Victor: Yes? My goodness. What a surprise.

Ashley: Hi. I wanted to give you an update on abby.

Adam: Um, would you like for me to give you some privacy while you talk?

Victor: Yes. Thank you.

Ashley: Yeah. I’d like to speak with victor alone.

Adam: Okay. Um, I can handle our lunch meeting on my own.

Victor: Thank you, adam.

Adam: Hey, for the record, i think, um, chance was a hell of a guy. I’d never met anyone with such integrity and a sense of duty. And I feel terrible for abby. The whole reason I haven’t gone over there and seen her is ’cause, um, I don’t want to upset her.

Ashley: Okay. I’ll pass on your condolences.

[ Door closes ]

Victor: What’s the story with our daughter?

Ashley: Nina told me that abby wanted to go to spain to find chance and that victoria talked her out of it.

Victor: Yeah. I was aware of abby’s plan, okay? I asked victoria to try to persuade her sister not to follow through with her plan. And I’m relieved to find out that it worked.

Ashley: Yes, but now that abby seems to be accepting the fact that chance is gone, I’m concerned that she’s just gonna get crushed by her grief.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ]

Nina: Here we go. Oh, I hope it helps.

Abby: Thank you, thank you, thank you. And thank you for everything that you’ve done for me. I — I honestly — I don’t know what I would do without you.

Nina: Well, you know, I can do more. I can feed him if you want to take a little rest.

Abby: I can feed my son. I have been doing this for months now, and the news from spain about chance — it hasn’t changed that. Come on, dominic. Here you go. Yeah.

Nina: Of course not.

Abby: We’re just gonna have a little bit of a bottle. We are in this together. We can get through this. I know we can. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Shh, shh, shh.

Lily: No, nothing is, uh, going on. Sometimes billy and I just have different points of view on how to run the company with details sometimes.

Devon: Yeah. Well, that sounds like a normal business relationship/partnership.

Lily: Yeah, it is. I mean, I’m more cautious. He’s risky. But usually it balances out.

Devon: Well, good. Hopefully this is just a one-off thing then, yeah?

Lily: Yeah, it — it’ll be fine. Uh, what’s going on? Why are you here?

Devon: I, um — I need your advice on a sensitive situation.

Lily: Yeah. What’s going on?

Devon: There was an explosion at the safe house that chance was meant to be at in spain.

Lily: Oh, my god.

Devon: Yeah, and it’s looking like he didn’t make it.

Lily: [ Gasps ] Oh, my god, that’s — god, i mean, abby and nina and j– oh, my god, that’s heartbreaking.

Devon: I know. I know. And abby has been going back and forth between denial and despair. And I want to be there for her, but I just don’t — I don’t know the right way to help.

Lily: [ Sighs ]

Nina: [ Gasps ]

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] A third of a bottle, and he is out. Look at him. He’s so cute when he’s sleeping.

Nina: He’s just gorgeous. Such a handsome little thing. I’m just glad the two of you can get some rest now.

Abby: I-I can’T. Um, I have to check in at the restaurant.

Nina: Oh, no. Abby, you’ve got such a wonderful team. I’m sure they’re taking care of everything.

Abby: Oh, it’s — it’s not the same.

Nina: Well, maybe you could ask devon to go over and look in on the place.

Abby: He’s already done so much for me. Everyone has. And I hate it.

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry. I… I didn’t mean that the way that it sounded. I — I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me, the way that everyone has stepped up, but, um [Sniffles] It makes me feel weak.

Nina: Oh, no.

Abby: And that’s not how i am, and that’s certainly not the woman that chance fell in love with. He’d — he’d expected more from me.

Nina: Abby, no. Chance would understand. We’re all hurting. He wouldn’t want us to hide our feelings.

Abby: Yeah. I can’t argue with that. But [Sniffles] I mean, there’s just so much that I need to do, so many things I’ve been putting off.

Nina: Like what?

Abby: Like calling everyone that loves chance. I need to tell them what’s going on, like — like jill. I just — I can’t bring myself to do it. How can I find the words?

Rey: Hey. How’s, uh, your investigation going?

Billy: It’s, uh — it’s fizzled out, actually.

Rey: Is that right?

Billy: Uh, yeah. You know what? I shouldn’t have even brought it up to you.

Rey: That surprises me. You seemed so determined to prove that adam was responsible for that guy missing.

Billy: Well, I was wrong. What can I say?

Rey: [ Chuckles ] How can you be so sure? Did the guy show up again?

Billy: No, he didn’T. I guess I’m just getting a little crazy thinking that adam was capable of doing something to that extreme.

Rey: Oh, you don’t think adam newman is capable of abducting someone?

Billy: Well, maybe in the old days. But he’s a changed man now. Haven’t you heard? Yeah, he’s got a new job. He’s a respectful parent. He’s doing a great job impersonating a decent human being, and I don’t think that he’s gonna jeopardize all of that for a nobody.

Sharon: Billy, I have your order.

Billy: Great. Thank you.

Sharon: Here’s the food and coffees. I’ll just get some extra cream for lily.

Billy: Oh, don’t worry about that. It’s not for lily. We have a writer working around the clock on a big story, and we have to keep him nourished.

Sharon: Sounds juicy. What’s that about?

Billy: Well, you know, it’s hush-hush right now. But it will be big. Thank you, sharon. Good to see you, detective.

Sharon: Uh-oh. I know that look. What’s wrong?

Rey: Uh, billy. You know, he’s not as good a liar as he thinks he is.

Sharon: What do you mean?

Rey: Never mind.

Sharon: Well, this has to have something to do with adam.

Rey: Yeah. Despite my best efforts, I can’t avoid hearing about the guy.

Sharon: Well, I got the impression from talking to lily that those two are still going at it. Was billy making any wild accusations about adam?

Rey: Just the opposite. It seemed that billy was defending adam.

Sharon: Wow. That is strange.

Nina: I told jill. It was hard, but she knows. And I also told phillip.

Abby: I’m sorry. I should have done that. That’s my responsibility.

Nina: No. Abby, that’s your responsibility. You can make those calls later, when you feel like it, when you’re ready. But nobody absolutely, positively has to hear from you right now. You know what I mean? I know that you’re the kind of person that wants to do everything on your own. But let me help. Chance would want me to do everything I can to lighten your load.

Abby: I bet jill and phillip are devastated.

Nina: Yeah. They are. They handled it very differently. Phillip, you know, got quiet and withdraws. That’s kind of his thing. And jill wanted to get on a plane and take charge. But I told her just to give us some time, you know? She can be a bit much.

Abby: Well, she is welcome here anytime.

Nina: And she will be very happy that from you when you’re ready. Jill will grieve in her own way. She’s had a lot of loss through the years, and she’s always found a way to pick herself up and keep going.

Abby: Yeah.

[ Cellphone pings ] Is that jill?

Nina: No, it’s just my agent. I, um — I really should call him, okay?

Abby: Yeah, no worries, yeah.

Nina: Okay.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: Yeah, so, then today abby was convinced that she should drop everything and fly to the site of the bombing to search for chance herself. And she had nina almost convinced that it was a good idea to go with her.

Lily: Oh, my god, that’s so sad. And it’s irrational and dangerous. It’s like — it just shows how much they want to believe that he’s alive and he’s coming back.

Devon: I know, but it’s the irrational thinking that I have a problem with because she has dominic, you know? You can’t think irrationally when you have a child. And mariah was there, too, and instead of trying to convince abby to do the right thing, she was offering to stay behind to watch dominic while abby’s gone.

Lily: Wait. Didn’t mariah move out of the house because she was getting too close to the baby?

Devon: Yes, she sure did, which is my point, because, you know, she’s been doing a lot better with all this. She’s been back to work and taking care of herself and focusing on her future with tessa. And then something like this happenS.

Lily: Do you think maybe she’s using the crisis to get closer to dominic?

Devon: Not on purpose or anything like that. I just think she sees that dominic is in distress and she feels like the best person to help him.

Lily: So she feels like he’s reacting to all the stress in the house?

Devon: Well, yeah, because he is. He can absolutely sense the tension in there. And I’ve tried to help by getting him out and taking him for walks and stuff like that.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, it sounds like what he needs.

Devon: Yeah, but this is — this is where I need your advice.

Lily: Yeah. What’s up?

Devon: Um, well, when I take him out, you know, it’s usually just for, like, an hour or two at the most, and then I’m bringing him right back into a stressful environment.

Lily: Well, I mean, abby has a nanny, right?

Devon: Yeah, she does.

Lily: Okay, well, maybe she should up the nanny’s hours for a while.

Devon: Well, yeah, that’s a possibility. But a nanny doesn’t solve the problem of the baby being around that kind of energy. So I’m wondering if it’s, you know, a better idea to move dominic out of that house temporarily, just until things stabilizE.

Billy: Jesse. It’s billy. I got some coffee and a few sugary treats here for you.

Gaines: Good. Just what I needed.

Billy: Yeah. You could use a little something. I’m sure you’re feeling a little bit like a rat in a cage right about now.

Gaines: Mm. Yeah, just a bit.

Billy: Well, don’t worry. Soon enough, you’ll be living the life that you want.

Gaines: Well, and that better happen long before the story about locke breaks. When is that happening?

Billy: That’s why I’m here. I wanted to talk to you about a few options.

Gaines: Wait. What does that mean — “options”?

Billy: It just means that we need to think about how we move forward from here.

Gaines: Oh, wait a minute. I don’t like the sound of that. I came back here — no, I fought my way back here for one reason and one reason only — to take down ashland locke. So, as far as options go, that’s it.

Billy: I understand that. I do. But we need to be smart. And when I brought you to tuscany, I gained the wrath of not only ashland, but the newmans.

Gaines: I think they already hated you.

Billy: Yeah, that part is true. But now they are coming after chanccomm. And I like my business. I’ve got good employees there, talented people that I don’t want to see them lose their livelihood. So please understand that there’s more to consider than just what you want.

Gaines: I see what’s happening here. They got to you, and now you’re chickening out.

Billy: No. I’m simply trying to make sure that we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot.

Gaines: Remember, I gave you camilla rhodes’ letter, the letter that can destroy locke. And now, what, you’re on their team and you’re gonna betray me?

Billy: Jesse, believe me, we are on the same team.

Gaines: Oh, are we? If that’s true, then riddle me this. Are you going to expose locke for the fraud that he is or not?

Billy: There is more to consider.

Gaines: No. I will tell you, it is pretty damn simple.

Billy: We have more power if we do not go public.

Gaines: I knew that i shouldn’t have trusted you. I knew it.& But it’s okay. I don’t need you. As a matter of fact, I don’t even need the damn letter because I will find somebody in the news media who has got some guts, and they will publish the story. The newmans will still be after you, and you will have missed the biggest story of your life. Stupid move, abbott. Stupid move.

Billy: Look, there is no doubt that you can find somebody else to public this story. But what happens when you do? Who’s gonna protect you when victor comes after you? I can’T. I’ll be too busy trying to defend chanccomm from his attacks. We need to stick together, or it makes it too easy for him to pick us off one by one.

Gaines: I have been waiting half of my life to take locke down.

Billy: I get that. But what’s a few more days? Jesse, you didn’t come forward with this until you found out that ashland was dying. You’ve had this letter the entire time. Why didn’t you release it back then?

Devon: No. Let me be very clear that I have zero doubts about abby’s ability to be a parent. I just feel like, at this point in time, maybe it’s best for both of them if she can grieve and heal properly without having to worry about a kid 24/7. ‘Cause she was already getting stressed out as a single mom before chance went missing. So it’s just — it seems like a lot to ask of her right now.

Lily: Well, just to be clear, this can only happen if abby agrees to it, right?

Devon: Oh, yeah, absolutely, ’cause I have no legal say over what happens to dominic. And that doesn’t change with chance being gone, either. So every decision about that baby is up to abby.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Well, look, I think that she’ll be getting advice from her mom. So maybe you should talk to ashley? You know? I think she’ll be able to tell how close abby is to a breaking point. And I think she’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, so I think she’ll be able to give really good advice on how to handle this.

Devon: Yeah. Well, I’m glad that I came to see one of the smartest people I know ’cause that’s very good advice. It is. I’m gonna do it.

Sharon: My advice is to keep listening to abby. Let her tell you what she wants.

Ashley: Yeah, well, she doesn’t admit to wanting or needing anything, actually.

Sharon: Then I doubt it would be productive for me to speak with her again.

Ashley: Yeah, I know. It’s gonna be a while before she’s in the frame of mind to seek therapy. But if she does decide to go for professional help, I’ll let you know.

Sally: Running into you twice in one day. It must be a sign.

Ashley: Of what?

Sally: That I should interview you. The one that you took from me in italy was a copy. But I hope you enjoyed reading it. The original is safe and secure…or at least that’s what billy abbott tells me.

[ Inhales deeply ] You should be grateful to old billy, really, because if he hadn’t convinced me to be patient, the story about locke’s greed and fraud would be front-page news right now, which is exactly what I want. I want the whole world to know about the fraud that started his empire with a crime. And that is exactly what will happen if you don’t do exactly what billy tells you to.

Billy: Well, that was fantastic. That was fantastic. I’m sure adam is freaking out right now trying to figure out how to explain himself to ashland that he lost control of the situation and I gained the upper hand.

Gaines: I don’t care about any of that. I just want to make sure that you’re holding up your end of the bargain — that I get paid and that I receive safe passage to my new life, living in anonymous comfort for the rest of my days.

Gaines: What the hell does that mean?

Billy: I have no idea. I have no idea what game he is playing. You stay here. Don’t leave. Lock the door behind me. Do not answer it for anyone else. I will be in touch.

Ashley: You think dominic should stay with you?

Devon: I do. I really do. And it would only be for a short time, of course, just until, you know, abby starts feeling like herself again.

Ashley: Yeah. It’s a very, very sweet offer. And, um, I mean, obviously I’m concerned about her. She’s overwhelmed, and she’s — she’s struggling.

Devon: Yeah.

Ashley: But on the positive side, she has all of her family and friends that are rallying around her. You know, she’s got you and nina, and — and her father and I are taking turns staying with her.

Devon: Yeah.

Ashley: She’s got the nanny, right? So, I mean, she’s really surrounded by so much love and so much support all the time.

Devon: Absolutely, and i completely get that. My only issue, though, is that everyone except for the nanny is grieving chance just like abby is.

Ashley: And you think that’s a problem?

Devon: Ashley, what worries me is — is dominic being around and absorbing all of that negative energy and that stress in the house and all the emotions — ’cause I know he feels it. I mean, you have to — I’m sure you’ve realized that he’s crying a lot more than he ever has before. His schedules are all off whack. I’m concerned about what this is going to do to him long-term.

Ashley: Yeah. I mean, I — I hear what you’re saying. I think it’s something we should watch out for, but I don’t think that we should deprive dominic and his mommy of this time together because, devon, they’re bonding. It’s so important to have this mother-child bond that they’re creating. This child will help abby heal, you know? He’ll give her hope…

Devon: Yeah.

Ashley: …For the future. So, as her mother, in my opinion, I think that baby needs to stay with abby in their home.

Devon: No, I understand. I do. I see your point. And it’s a good one. Um…I just hope that you’re right.

Abby: [ Exhales heavily ] I drifted off.

Nina: Good. You needed to get some rest.

Abby: Was he crying? I-I could hear him in my sleep.

Nina: Oh, just a little bit. I think he as a little bit gassy. But he’s okay now. Aren’t you? You little sweetie.

Abby: I took one of these pills that nate prescribed me, and it knocked me out.

Nina: I think that’s great. You needed to get some sleep.

Abby: But I wasn’t there when he needed me.

Nina: Abby, caring for a newborn baby is not a one-person job. We all need a break. Let me help. I mean, that’s why I’m here. That’s what grandmas are for.

Abby: But I have been such a wreck lately.

[ Sniffles ] I mean, he’s been spending so much more time with other people. Does he even know who his mother is?

Nina: Abby, of course he does. He loves you. He adores you.

Abby: I don’t think I can do this.

Billy: I don’t know what’s going on. Something happened, and I need more information.

Lily: Okay, slow down. What’s happening?

Billy: Okay. I was able to convince gaines to go along with the plan. We recorded a message and sent that to adam, where gaines threatened to expose ashland’s truth to the world unless the newmans back the hell off.

Lily: Right. That’s what you wanted.

Billy: Yes, but it was adam’s response — “nice try.”

Lily: [ Scoffs ] What does that mean?

Billy: I don’t know. It’s like he’s — he’s daring us to expose ashland’s past, and i don’t understand. I mean, are ashland and adam going against each other? Did they somehow turn into enemies?

Lily: No. I doubt it, now that ashland’s married into the family.

Billy: Okay, well, adam was not threatened by our threat in the least, and I don’t understand what’s going on, but we need to figure it out — and fast.

Rey: Why is that?

Adam: Billy’s back in the office now? Alright, it’s time to pull the trigger and blow this thing wide open.

Jack: Well, you exercised my brain. Now I have to take care of the rest of my body.

Phyllis: Thank you for pulling me out of my funk.

Jack: I’m always here for you.

Phyllis: I know that.

Amanda: I appreciate you escorting me home from the courthouse.

Michael: I know you were perfectly capable of extricating yourself from that pack of vultures/reporters parked on the courthouse steps, but, you know, I was just happy to be lending a hand.

Amanda: Well, I really do appreciate it, michael. Thlast thing that I wanted to do was answer more questions after testifying.

Michael: Mm.

Amanda: I think I left every single thing I had on that stand.

Michael: You did.

Amanda: Cheers.

[ Cellphone rings ] Mm. Excuse me. Oh, it’s devon. Can you give me a second? Hey.

Devon: Hey, I’m glad I caught you. Did you make it home okay?

Amanda: Yeah, I’m fine. I’m back at the penthouse now. Michael’s here. The trial’s over for today.

Devon: Hey, I’m really sorry that I couldn’t be in court with you.

Amanda: No, don’t apologize. I completely understand why you need to be there for abby and dominic. How are things going over there?

Devon: They’re — it’s tense, but everything’s steady right now. But tell me real quick how your testimony went.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] I am not even sure yet. It’s a lot to process, you know? Do you think I can fill you in when you get home?

Devon: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. I’ll talk to you later.

Amanda: Okay, bye.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] Now that I’ve had a chance to breathe, I want your honest opinion about how things went today. Sutton’s lawyers are building a strong defense, so taking the stand, did that achieve what we had hoped? Do you think that my grandfather is one step closer to being convicted?

Devon: Well, you came at a quiet time. Everybody’s upstairs. Nina, abby, and ashley are all trying to get some sleep. But I know that abby’s probably gonna be down soon ’cause she hasn’t been sleeping at all.

Nick: Yeah. I bet she’s not sleeping. I mean, to get that kind of news has got to be devastating. How’s she coping?

Devon: She’s not well. She was in a really dark place earlier today. She was convinced that she should fly herself to spain to the site of the explosion to search for chance herself.

Nick: She can’t do that.

Devon: No, I know she can’t do it. We all convinced her that it was a bad idea, including victoria who stopped by. But once she got the idea out of her mind, she fell apart completely. The reality of never being able to see her husband again is starting to set in. It’s too much for her. It’s gonna take a really long time for her to get past all this pain and this loss. And she’s really gonna need all of our help and support to get through this.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Yeah, I’ll do whatever it takes to help her. We’ll make sure she gets everything she needs.

Chloe: Hey! Hello, over here.

Sally: Yeah.

Chloe: You haven’t heard anything I’ve said in the last five minutes.

Sally: Yes, I have. I was listening.

Chloe: You’re still thinking about phyllis and jack.

Sally: [ Scoffs ]

Chloe: I saw the way that you were looking at them. Don’t deny it.

Sally: Fine, yes, I was a little miffed.

Chloe: A little more than miffed. But I don’t get why. I thought that you were over jack, which you should be, since your relationship ended eons ago. You’re not still harboring hope that you could get back together. Are you?

Michael: I was very pleased with how your testimony went. I mean, no doubt it was a painful position for you emotionally, but you were poised, eloquent, in control.

Amanda: Well, I am glad that it looked that way from the outside. But watching sutton at that defense table, staring at me as I was laying out what happened, it was tearing me up inside. So all I could do was maintain a facade of strength and control.

Michael: Well, you did it. You pulled it off and then some. And, I mean, I was not surprised. I never had any doubt in you. At one point, did you represent sutton ames as his attorney?

Amanda: Yes.

Michael: Can you explain the reasons you went from being one of your grandfather’s defenders to testifying against him?

Amanda: I had reason to believe that he had my father killed.

Michael: You handled yourself perfectly. I mean, you shared your pain and your humanity with the jury in an entirely genuine way, but still remembered to bring the story back to the innocent life that was taken and the man who was responsible for your father’s death. How did you come to suspect that sutton ames was responsible for your father’s death?

Amanda: My father’s brakes were tampered with when he was searching for me and my sister. See, my sister and I were given up at birth, in part due to mr. Ames. When I learned this, the scales started to fall from my eyes one by one, and I realized the truth. Sutton ames saw my father as no more than a potential threat that needed to be eliminated.

Michael: I’m sorry, a threat?

Amanda: Yeah. To his sterling reputation. To his political career. See, sutton, he could not stand the thought of his perfect image being tainted, so my sister hilary and I, we were, um, nothing more than a dirty secret that could never come to light. As gut-wrenching as it was to say all of that out loud and in public, it was cathartic, too.

Michael: Well, as your friend, I’m glad you were able to gain some closure from it. As the da, I really appreciate how you cut the legs out from under sutton’s attorney before he could take a swipe. I mean, that was just genius.

[ Laughs ] Is it true that mr. Ames recently came to see you when he learned that you would be a witness in this trial?

Amanda: Yes, he was trying to secretly record me admitting that the only reason I was testifying against him was out of vindictiveness.

Michael: Wow. Were you surprised by this tactic?

Amanda: Not at all. My grandfather has been desperate and furious that i would dare stand up to him.

Michael: This entire ordeal must be very painful for you.

Amanda: Have I been wounded by my grandfather’s actions? Absolutely. But this is not about revenge for me. This is about justice for my father, richard nealon. That is the only reason I am here today.

Michael: I really think your words made a difference to the jury.

Amanda: I hope so. But it was just important for me to do right by my father. I know it’s gonna bring him back, but maybe he’s looking down and he sees that I’m fighting for him, too.

Michael: I promise, you did him proud.

Abby: Nick. You heard the news?

Nick: Yeah. I’m so sorry. I just want you to know I’m here if you need anything.

Devon: Hey, I figure that you guys want some time alone, so I’m gonna take off unless you need me to stick around for anything, abby.

Abby: I’m sorry I didn’t tell you myself.

Nick: Oh, abby, with everything that you’ve been dealing with, I don’t care about that, I just care about you.

Sally: I have zero hope and zero interest in rekindling things with jack, and I’ve accepted that it’s never gonna happen. But it infuriates me that I am considered a pariah in this town and treated like a total villain while phyllis, somehow, is the wicked witch with a heart of gold. That woman hurt jack far worse than I ever did, and now, i mean, look at him. He’s still pining after her and trying — not so subtly, in my opinion — to steal her away from nick.

Chloe: Okay, well, it’s a bit of a leap. Phyllis and jack have remained close friends over the years.

Sally: Yeah, that’s my point. How? I mean, why does jack give phyllis a free pass when he acts like i don’t deserve a smidge of forgiveness?

Chloe: It’s a mistake to think that you’re entitled to forgiveness when you’ve wronged people. It’s earned. It takes time.

Sally: And you think phyllis has earned it? I doubt it. There’s so obviously a double standard for her, and I wish that I could expose phyllis for the total fake that she is.

Phyllis: Take your best shot. Want your clothes to smell freshly washed

Chloe: Okay. Ladies, ladies, let’s dial it down.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m fine. This is me at a one. I’m at a one right now. While I’m already taking the high road by allowing you in my hotel and taking your money, i will not receive your insults, you got that? And by the way, I am not a fake, I am not a phony. Everyone knows that I’m the real deal, guts and glory, okay?

Sally: Mm-hmm, real good at tooting your own horn.

Phyllis: Okay, I own up to my mistakes. And I celebrate my successes.

Sally: Whoo, toot-toot.

Chloe: Okay, you know what? Why don’t we just —

Phyllis: While you, all you do is hide your head in the sand when you’ve done something really destructive.

Sally: I don’t think you’ve owned up to everything that you should have.

Phyllis: What does that mean, sally?

Sally: I just wonder how nick really feels, how comfortable he is with your friend/more-than-friend relationship with jack.

Phyllis: I will not sit here and listen to this. I will not dignify it with an answer. You got that? My personal life is nobody’s business, least of all yours.

Sally: Seems like I hit a nerve. Maybe nick really isn’t too keen on you and jack getting so cozy. I wonder if he would like to know about a little scene i witnessed between the two of you in tuscany. That’s what I thought.

Abby: At least one of us is sleeping. Is that for me?

Nick: Yeah. I figured you weren’t eating. Thought some of your favorites might tempt you. I’m sure you’re still in shock.

Abby: Yeah. I just — I can’t believe this is happening. But it is, so…

Nick: Yeah. You want to talk about it?

Abby: No, no, I’m sorry, i can’T.

Nick: Yeah, I get it. Probably all talked out. Abby, just know that I’m here, you know, if there’s anything you need.

Abby: Actually, there is something that you can do.

Devon: I really needed that.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] Me, too.

Devon: Now, I want to hear everything about the trial.

Amanda: Um, well, I am feeling a little better about my testimony.

Devon: Yeah?

Amanda: Yeah, now that i spoke with michael. He thinks that it was a success all-in-all.

Devon: I’m sure it was. As difficult as it must have been for you, I have no doubt that you stepped up.

Amanda: It was a strange sensation, being on the witness stand, you know, not being the one asking all of the questions. Then I felt like I prepared, but it was far more emotionally draining than I had expected. It just — I felt my anger, you know, bubbling up every time i looked at sutton. And there was other times when i got so choked up that I didn’t even think I could keep it together.

Michael: To be clear, ms. Sinclair, you are saying that you take no pleasure in testifying against your grandfather. This was the last place that i ever wanted to be, but I had to be here. I had no choice. See, sutton ames puts himself above everyone else, including the law.

Michael: What exactly do you mean?

Amanda: He demanded that his own grandchildren be sent away because they were an embarrassment to him. He had his grandbabies’ father killed because he didn’t want that secret to come out. And then, when he realized that the walls were closing in, he had his own daughter take the fall for him. Having grown up on my own, i can’t describe what it felt like when I discovered that I had a family. It was kind of like this door that had been forever closed was finally opened. I developed a relationship with my mother and my sister, but that would be impossible with sutton. Because he only cares about one person. See, that man has proven time and time again he will do whatever it takes to protect himself, everyone else be damned.

Devon: Please tell me that you’re done and you don’t have to get back up on that witness stand, alright?

Amanda: I am not stepping foot in that courtroom again until the verdict is read. It’s just — it’s too hard being in the same room as sutton. I actually think that imani feels the same way. But I really appreciated her support.

Devon: What about naya?

Amanda: Well, she stayed away, but I’m glad. You know, I think it would’ve been too hard for her, just with everything.

Devon: Yeah.

Amanda: But what about you, you know? How’s everything going at the chancellor house? How is abby?

Devon: Abby’s not good. She’s not good at all.& And after what I saw today, i have a strong feeling that things are just gonna get a hell of a lot worse.

Abby: I need a break from talking about me, so please tell me, how are you doing?

Nick: Um, I’m alright. Kids are good. New hope’s — it’s good.

Abby: You are leaving out a few major things.

Nick: Such as?

Abby: Such as the two weddings that you went to in italy. Yeah, please tell me about the ceremonies.

Nick: Are you sure you want to talk about that?

Abby: Yeah. I am still able to be happy for other people.

Nick: Okay. Summer and kyle’s wedding was small and intimate, but very romantic. Summer was so focused on kyle that as she was walking down the aisle, she forgot her bouquet, so she just ran back and got it and walked again.

Abby: Well, that seems appropriate for summer and kyle.

Nick: Yeah, she owned the moment. It was — it was cute and…kind of perfect.

Abby: Well, I hope they have a very long, happy life together.

Nick: You know, victoria’s wedding was a completely different thing. Total five-star newman event, so…

[ Sighs ] You know what? I’m sure you’d rather do almost anything than listen to my boring storytelling, so why don’t we just get out of here? Let’s get dominic and go for a walk or something. You want to do that?

Abby: Sure. Yeah, why not? Let’s do it.

Amanda: Abby running off and trying to find chance on her own, that would have been disastrous on so many levels.

Amanda: She’s lucky that she has you and other people who care about her looking out for her.

Devon: Oh, I agree about that, but what worries me is her mood swings, ’cause you can’t predict how she’s gonna be from one moment to the next.

Amanda: Well, isn’t that common for someone who’s grieving?

Devon: Yeah, it is, it is, and you know that I’m very aware of, you know, all those kinds of feelings, and they led me down a very destructive path. I’m not trying to project and say that the same thing’s gonna happen to abby, ’cause I know she’s a different person, but i just see a lot of red flags. And I know that she’s gonna be able to get through this. I just don’t know how long it’s gonna take.

Amanda: You know, whatever it is that you’re thinking, you can tell me, right?

Devon: Of course I do. I don’t think that the chancellor mansion is the best place for dominic right now. He’s clearly being affected by the stress of the house. He’s crying more than he ever has before. His schedules are all off.

Amanda: Okay, devon, I mean, there could be many reasons for that, right?

Devon: No, it all started when abby got the news, so i know that it’s connected. You can see it. Abby starts crying and she can’t stop, dominic will start crying and he can’t stop, and then they just — they create this circle of stress for each other. Which is why I’m thinking that it might be the best thing for dominic to be taken out of that house. But then I don’t know how abby’s gonna react to that, you know, ’cause she’s barely hanging on by a thread herself.

Amanda: Um, yeah, that would be a very difficult conversation.

Devon: I mean, the idea would be just to take dominic until she works through everything, but, you know, you’re right, it is — it’s a tough conversation to have.

Amanda: How can I help?

Devon: Doing what you’re doing, by just being here. Listening to me.

Phyllis: Sally, I have no idea what you’re talking about, but whatever bomb you think you have, it’s a dud, trust me.

Jack: Again, I’m not sure what you’re asking me.

Phyllis: It’s just sally said something, and it got me thinking. That’s all.

Phyllis: I don’t know, it doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter, right? Moving on.

Jack: Good. Don’t let sally get to you.

Phyllis: Right.

Jack: She’s not worth it.

Phyllis: I get it. No truer words were spoken. Alright. Good luck at your meeting.

Amanda: That was so nice, being here with you and just shutting out the world.

Devon: I know. I wish we could stay in bed all day and never leave.

Amanda: Mm, me, too. But I have a ton of things to do, and I understand more why it’s so important for you to be there for abby and the baby.

Devon: Well, I appreciate you being so supportive of me. But, you know, you didn’t really say that much when I told you my idea.

Amanda: Yeah, that’s, um…

[ Chuckles ] That’s because I don’t think it’s my place.

Devon: Well, I’m asking you, though.

Amanda: Well, I think it’s a very delicate situation, but

[Sighs] I guess I would say keep listening to abby and keep tuning in to how she’s feeling. But I think you’re right. At the end of the day, abby has the tools and the ability to find coping mechanisms to deal with all of this. But dominic doesn’t, so he needs someone to do what’s best for him.

Devon: Oh, I agree with you completely. I just — I don’t know if i should pull the trigger.

Amanda: Yeah, I don’t know about that either. But I know you’ll figure it out. You’ll follow your heart.

Devon: I know that I love you. I’ll check in with you later, okay?

Nick: I really thought dominic would like the playground and the park and the pond. And my nephew doesn’t know it yet, but this is gonna be one of his favorite places in town.

Abby: Chance proposed to me right here. Yeah, in this park.

Nick: Hey, ab, why don’t we — why don’t we go somewhere else?

Abby: No, no. This is exactly where I want to be. Close to those memories.

[ Sighs ] Chance got down on one knee and he proposed and he talked about the child that we would share one day. And he promised to love me forever. And he said our future would be filled with hope and possibility.

Chloe: Yeah, I can’t wait. And since I’m still on my apology tour with lauren, I was thinking of getting some dessert from that pie shop that she loves.

Sally: Are you kidding me? Lauren was just as pissed at you as she was with me over victoria’s wedding dress, and now here you are, invited to dinner, making nice over pie, while I’m still over here in siberia.

Chloe: I thought you hoped i would patch things up with lauren.

Sally: Well, yeah, I did and I do, and I’m very happy for you. I was just hoping that I could do the same, but, no, it’s just another example of how I’m never on the receiving end of forgiveness.

Chloe: You know, I’ve really had it with this self-pity. Give it a rest.

Jack: [ Sighs ] I have no doubt that you and nick will work through this.

Phyllis: Well, we’ll see if that’s true.

Jack: See? There you go, underestimating yourself again.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ]

Jack: I’m rooting for both of you. Well, especially you. Always. Maybe the reason I didn’t move on with my romantic life was… ’cause I already was with the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. Maybe you set the bar too high, red.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Listen, I don’t — I don’t think you should say things that you might not mean.

Jack: I’m not saying this because I’ve had too much to drink. I’m saying it because it’s true. I have never stopped loving you. And I don’t think I ever will.

Phyllis: I love you, too. That’s never gonna change.

Amanda: It went as well as can be expected, I guess.

Phyllis: Good. Well, I’m sure that your testimony will convince the jury that they need to nail this guy to the wall.

Amanda: Mm, thank you. I hope so. But I will not know for sure until the foreman rises and announces the verdict, so I will be counting the seconds until then. But I’ve been wrapped up in that all day, so can we please, please just — let’s talk about you.

Phyllis: Oh, okay.

Amanda: Yes.

Phyllis: Um, hey, you know — you know when you have a thought and it just sort of doesn’t go away and it’s just been buzzing around in my head, so i just want to talk to you about it.

Amanda: No, I hate when that happens.

Phyllis: Yeah, so —

Amanda: What’s the thought?

Phyllis: Yeah, you know, I’m just — I’M…

[ Groans ] I’m just thinking that my friendship with jack has precluded me from really, um… opening up and making things work with nick.

Amanda: Really?

Phyllis: I mean, not always, but lately, when nick and I have hit some rough patches, um, I go to jack for advice.

Amanda: Well, why would a friendship affect a love story?

Phyllis: Well, I didn’t think it would, but…nick made accusations.

Amanda: About what?

Phyllis: He said he saw more going on than what meets the eye.

Amanda: Well, was there?

Phyllis: Yeah. But not in the way that you think. As someone who resembles someone else,

Chloe: First of all, lauren and I are family, and we have been for a long time. And that alone makes our relationship different than the one she has with you.

Sally: Yeah, okay.

Chloe: Listen, I’ve been where you are now — on the outside, looking in. And trust me, I have run the gamut when it comes to causing trouble, from small schemes to admittedly disturbed vengeful behavior, and I made the decision to stop. And I did. And that is the key.

Sally: So have I. That whole business with victoria’s wedding dress, it was all for a good cause.

Chloe: My advice — focus on the good things you have in your life and what you stand to lose if you don’t change. And quit complaining. And stop blaming others for the situation that you got yourself into. Just let it go already.

Sally: I hear you. You’re right.

Phyllis: This is kind of hard to describe, but I’m gonna give it a shot. So — so there’s this barrier between me and nick, and, um… I just couldn’t get through it. And I think that’s why I turned to jack for advice when I was struggling with nick.

Amanda: Because you couldn’t fully trust yourself to be open with nick the way that you are with jack.

Phyllis: I mean, I never thought of it that way.

Amanda: Yeah, but just… I think that’s totally normal. You know, it’s — it’s easier to open up to a friend as opposed to a lover, right? You have less fear of judgment, less worry that you’re gonna make them angry or hurt their feelings.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And I really value jack’s advice.

Amanda: Yeah, and I can tell how close the two of you are.

Phyllis: He’s such a good man. He really is. I mean, he really supports my relationship with nick, and he has every reason not to.

Amanda: Um…you know, you never really told me the details about the dynamic between the three of you.

Phyllis: Oh, really?

Amanda: Yeah.

Phyllis: Um…okay. Well, I was with jack, and i cheated on him with nick. You know… yeah, you know, hey, listen, I’m not a saint.

Amanda: No, no, I’m not judging.

Phyllis: Okay.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] I’m just wondering, how long ago was this?

Phyllis: It was a while ago. Then I got pregnant with summer and I didn’t know if — if she was jack’s baby or — or nick’s, so, yeah.

Amanda: Wow. Well, that gives me a whole new perspective. I don’t know all of the missing details, but, objectively, i would say that you have a deep connection with jack. You know, and he’s been a huge part of your life all of these years. And you’ve told me how much you still care about each other, despite your rocky past. So, phyllis, have you considered the possibility that jack is more than a friend to you? So maybe you’ve never fully gotten over him.

Nick: Uh…yeah. Uh… I guess you can handle it. Or I can. Either way, our daughter needs to know that her parents aren’t together anymore.

Sharon: Lily.

Lily: Hi.

Sharon: Hey, I’m glad I ran into you. I was actually planning on reaching out an apologizing for the way I acted last time I saw you. I was not upset with you. Billy’s latest wild accusation against adam is just so frustrating, but I never should demanded that you reel him in.

Lily: Yeah, I don’t really know how to take this half-apology when it seems like you’re still blaming billy. And to be honest with you, i don’t think his accusations are that wild.

Sharon: I hope that billy hasn’t sucked you in to his never-ending vendetta against adam.

Lily: Billy hasn’t sucked me in to any thing. I actually just came from seeing your ex, and I can tell you that he’s the one with the vendetta who needs to be seriously reined in.

Adam: So, you say you want to bring me, my father, and ashland down? Well, you better back up and tell me what this so-called threat’s all about. Exactly what evidence do you have?

Billy: I’ve got the original letter from camilla rhodes’ will proving that ashland stole his mentor’s fortune, the same fortune that he built his empire with, the same empire that spawned this company that we’re standing in right now. And wouldn’t it be a shame to see that all come crumbling to the ground?

Nikki: Adam said he had no idea that their little attack plan was putting stress on ashland.

Victoria: Well, I’m sure that’s how ashland prefers it.

Nikki: Yeah, well, he said it was just business and they had no intentions of hurt ashland or my grandchildren, by the way. I mean, the reality is that they have no idea if it’s going to hurt them or not.

Victoria: Well, I don’t know all of the details, but ashland has assured me that the children will not be affected.

Nikki: [ Sighs ]

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ]

Nikki: How is abby doing?

Victor: Not well. Seems that abby is teetering between acceptance and denial, you know? And she’s determined to do something very risky.

Abby: Mariah, that is very generous of you to offer to watch dominic while I search for chance, but it’s — it’s not necessary.

Mariah: I’m happy to do it. I mean, he needs somebody that he’s comfortable with, and I can move back in here and take care of him.

Abby: No, please. You don’t have to worry about dominic. There are plenty of people who can help watch him while I’m gone.

Nina: Just — no plans have been nailed down yet, so…

Abby: But my plans haven’t changed. I don’t care what anyone says. I am going to look for chance. And if no one will go with me, I will go by myself. At least mariah’s on my side.

Devon: Abby, this isn’t about sides, okay? We all hope that chance is alive, alright? This is about life and death and you doing something stupid. We’re not gonna let dominic risk losing his mother, too. Your heart is at the heart of everything you do.

It’s fine if you’re not willing to do that. My son will not be put in danger. I have plenty of friends and family that are willing to watch him.

And just so you know, I can make good on every threat that I’ve uttered here today. Nick: I’m alright. Um…it’s not easy, but I’m determined to not wallow in heartbreak.

Sharon: Good. Because you shouldn’T.

Nina: I’m not sure what else we can say to persuade her not to go.

Mariah: Poor dominic. He’s probably absorbing all of this tension. I’m gonna go check on him.

Nina: Wait, mariah, no. I just got him to sleep, and his schedule has been off the last few days. I don’t want to risk waking him, okay? But believe me — he’s alright. There’s no reason to worry.

Mariah: Yeah, of course. Um, you know, I’m gonna go take care of some things in case i need to come back here. So just text me if you need me.

Devon: Of course.

Nina: Okay.

Mariah: Alright. Bye, guys.

Devon: See you.

Nina: I don’t think it’s a very good idea for mariah to move back in here, given, you know, her attachment to the baby.

Devon: Yeah, no, I think it would be a horrible idea if she did that. It wouldn’t help anybody.

[ Dominic crying ]

Nina: [ Sighs ] I know that cry. It’s just fussiness, but… it just breaks my heart to think about what the poor child’s lost.

Abby: I know if I go to the explosion site I can find out what actually happened to chance.

Victoria: I’m sorry. I mean, I understand the impulse of needing to do something, but don’t you think it makes more sense to leave it to the experts?

Abby: No, the experts have failed. And the — the more time that goes by, the trail — it’s just gonna get cold.

Victoria: But this is a very volatile situation. How do you know that the people in spain are gonna agree to talk to you about any of this?

Abby: Look…chance could be out there. He could be hiding. He — he could be hurt somewhere. And I know that I am the only one with the sheer force necessary to find him. So, are you gonna let me use the jet or not?

Victoria: I’m sorry, abby. I just — I don’t think it’s a great idea.

Abby: Fine. Fine. I’ll call dad. He’ll let me use the jet.

Victoria: Our father doesn’t think it’s a good idea, either.

Abby: Why are you all ganging up on me? Why are you all fighting me on this? Them I can understand, but you — you are my sister. You’re supposed to be on my side.

Victoria: I am on your side. That’s why I’m saying no.

Abby: You of all people. You should understand how important this is for me because you’re also looking the& death of your husband in the face.

Abby: I know that you’re fighting to keep ashland alive, no matter the cost, the risks of the treatment. It doesn’t matter. You’re doing whatever you can to save his life. And that’s what I’m trying to do for chance. I just want to fight for him. Why — why shouldn’t I? Why wouldn’t I?

Victoria: Because, abby, maybe in your heart — maybe — maybe you know there’s nothing to fight for.

Abby: No.

Victoria: Look, I know you don’t want to hear this. I know that. And I don’t want to say it, but it has to be said. Going there to try to figure out what happened — I mean, it’s just going to compound the hurt. And you’ve already had enough of that, don’t you think?

Abby: [ Crying ] That’s why i want to go there — to end the pain.

Victoria: This day is coming for me, too. When I lose my husband… when I lose ashland, I know what I’m gonna need and what I’m gonna want, and that’s to have my family around me to support me and to hold me up no matter what. So home is where you need to be right now, so that you can lean on us and so that we can just — we can wrap you up in our arms.

Abby: [ Sniffling ]

Mariah: So, abby is determined to find out what happened to chance firsthand.

Tessa: Oh, my heart is just breaking for her.

Mariah: I know. Me too. For abby and for dominic. I’m worried about him.

Tessa: Oh, well, why? I mean, you know he’s gonna get taken care of.

Mariah: Well, maybe he could be taken care of by me.

Tessa: What do you mean?

Mariah: I offered to move back in if abby goes to look for chance.

Tessa: Mariah, do you think that’s a good idea?

Devon: It’s just, the more erratic abby becomes, the more worried I am because it’s like she’s spiraling out of control.

Nina: I know. I’m worried about her, too. These massive mood swings — they’re concerning.

Devon: I just don’t get how she went from what I thought was accepting the truth to wanting to leave her child behind and fly out to prove that chance is alive.

Nina: Well, I’m not gonna lie. I know how she feels. It’s everything I’ve got not to jump on an overseas flight. I’d love to just hold him in my arms again, you know, and look in his eyes and…tell him that his mother loves him and that we’re gonna be okay.

Devon: I know. To know that you will never be able to see somebody that you love again is the worst feeling in the world.

Nina: There’s just so much left undone, you know? I want to tell him that the son that he and abby dreamed of is here and he’s beautiful and perfect and deeply loved. But I can’T.

[ Voice breaking ] And it weighs on my heart. And it’s so sad. It’s just… losing a child is so unfair.

Devon: When somebody dies before their time, it’s unfair to everyone that loves them.

Nina: Oh, devon, I’m so sorry.

Devon: Why?

Nina: You’ve lost so much in your life — a wife and a baby that you never even got to meet. I — I know you understand.

Devon: I certainly do. But, you know, what I went through in my experiences doesn’t compare to being left a single parent with a little baby to raise.

Nina: It’s just so tragic. And I know it was a mistake to even consider going with abby. But at the moment, it seemed like the right thing to do, like the only thing to do, and I know that’s how she feels, the imperative to bring her husband back, to bring back the father of her child. Just all these months of waiting, and this is how it ends? Well, no wonder she’s bouncing around the stages of grief, the denial, the anger, the bargaining, back to denial. But it’s real. Chance’s death is real.

[ Gasps ] Oh, god.

[ Sighs ]

Lily: Hey. How’d it go with adam?

Billy: Well, his first response was to call my bluff.

Lily: Well, that’s not surprising. Did you think he would cave that easily?

Billy: No, probably not. But I had to make sure that he knew that I have him in a no-win situation. I had to ratchet it up a little bit, so I put him on a deadline — 6:00 P.M. Tonight.

Adam: Dad, I finally reached you.

Victor: Sorry, son. I’ve been with your sister.

Adam: I know. Um, how’s abby doing?

Victor: Unfortunately, not well. So, how’s our project going, by the way?

Adam: Billy showed up here, true to form. He acted as expected.

Victor: Okay. Well, let’s discuss that in person, alright?

Adam: Oh, and, um, nikki came by earlier.

Victor: Oh, she did?

Adam: She is worried that our plan might be too taxing on ashland.

Victor: I see. Um…I’ll deal with that. Talk to you later. So, my baby, I understand you went to see adam, expressing your reservations about the project he and I are working on?

Nikki: Yes, I did. I didn’t want to bother you while you were so upset about abby. I was just concerned about ashland. I don’t think that he needs any additional stress right now with his illness.

Victor: I understand your concern. But rest assured that we will finish the project without ashland’s support, okay? But there’s no way anyone or anything will stop us from pursuing it.

Phyllis: My relationship with nick was a big trap. It was a big trap. I knew it wasn’t gonna work, but he convinced me it was.

[ Exhales heavily ] It’s that family of his. He’ll never change because his family will not allow him to change. That’s the truth. I can’t take it. They have secrets from him, and you know victor. He just twists things around, and then nick just goes running back to mom and dad, like he always has done, like he always will do. You know this. You know this better than anyone. I can’t take that viper’s nest of a family that he has. But it’s their loss, you know? It’s their loss and it’s nick’s loss because the newmans — you know this — they eat their own.

[ Sighs ] I broke my own rule about talking about nick.

Jack: Oh, I wouldn’t — i wouldn’t say you broke it. You maybe smashed it to smithereens.

[ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: You’re laughing. You should be afraid.

Jack: Oh, I think we’re past that. I know how hard you love. I know you love to win. Losing connection with nick at the same time as…somehow feeling that you failed is not a good combination for you.

Phyllis: I failed.

[ Scoffs ] I’m a failure. It was a break-up.

Jack: It was a break-up. We broke up. And I would never in a million years say we shouldn’t have tried. This is life. This happens. We find someone. We fall in love. We have good days. We have terrible days. We spend day and night together, and sometimes — not always — it ends. And we pull apart, and it hurts. And we feel regret and misery and —

Phyllis: Listen. This is a pep talk. I’m — so, I mean, honestly, I’m about to crawl into a dark hole.

Jack: Hold on. I’m not finished.

Sharon: So, what can I get for you? Coffee?

Nick: Actually, I came by for some of those little mini cinnamon cakes. I, uh, am gonna go see abby. I know those are her favorite. You know, don’t you? Who told you?

Sharon: Mariah called. Actually, at her request, I went and spent some time with abby to try and help her cope.

Nick: How’s she doing?

Sharon: It’s a very difficult time for her.

Nick: I just hope abby understands why I haven’t been by to see her. Nobody in my family bothered to tell me about this. It’s just another example of my father controlling the narrative. You know, I’m not gonna — I’m not gonna do this. I’m not gonna make this about him. I’m just gonna do everything i can to help abby through this. I really appreciate you going by to see her.

Sharon: Grief can be so tricky. It’s difficult for anyone to navigate.

[ Dominic crying ]

Abby: Oh. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. It’s okay. It’s okay. Come to mama. It’s okay, baby boy. Okay. Mommy’s here.

[ Sniffles ] Mommy’s here. It’s okay. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. It’s alright. It’s alright. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.

Nina: Yeah. Okay. Oh, my goodness. Okay. Okay. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Oh, dear.

Abby: [ Sobbing ] We do it every night.

Mariah: I would just be moving back in with the baby because it’s an emergency situation.

Tessa: Look, I totally understand the circumstances, but…you’re still getting over your own trauma.

Mariah: You don’t think I’ve made any progress?

Tessa: Yes, I do. But that’s my point. I would hate to see all this forward motion just totally wiped out. I think it’s a little soon for you to take on full-time care of dominic.

Mariah: Just when I think that we’re in sync again, you say something like that.

Tessa: Look, I — I don’t want to fight about this, but let’s please — let’s please not go back there.

Mariah: I just want to make sure that he’s okay.

[ Dominic crying ]

Devon: Hey. What happened?

Victoria: Well, I actually think I was able to talk abby out of making the trip. But she’s furious with me.

Devon: Well, I hope that you did ’cause I don’t know what else we can say to her. She’s entitled to have mood swings, but it’s a problem when it’s around the baby like this.

Victoria: Well, I won’t disagree with you on that, but it looks like abby has a long way to go before she recovers from this.

Abby: [ Sobbing ]

Phyllis: I certainly hope this inspirational talk gets a lot brighter soon, please.

Jack: All I’m trying to say is, despite the pain and the regret, this was not a mistake, not the trying, not the loving, and not the breaking up.

Phyllis: I was a failure. Please. A complete and utter failure. Come on.

Jack: It’s an ending. That’s all it is. It’s not an indictment of you or nick or what you two shared. Don’t ask me how I know this, but I know it for a fact. Love with someone… who wants the best for you… is never a mistake. Eventually, it brings you more than it costs you.

Phyllis: So, to be clear, falling for nick again — that doesn’t make me a failure?

Jack: No. Not at all.

Phyllis: And I’m not an idiot?

Jack: You are anything but an idiot.

Phyllis: And I’m older and wiser, right? Older.

[ Chuckles ] So it’s not gonna be that hard this time?

Jack: You will be happy again, red. That I promise you.

Phyllis: Alright, then.

Jack: Alright, then.

Phyllis: Clink.

Nick: Uh, I appreciate your concern, uh, but if you’re implying that I’m grief-stricken over my relationship with phyllis, that is not the case. Uh, if anything, I just feel a little foolish, kind of like i mistook chemistry for something more permanent.

Sharon: Well, I wouldn’t beat yourself up about that. The two are easily confused.

Nick: Well, thank you.

Sharon: For what? These?

Nick: Uh, no, but also for these. Uh, just for not going the, you know, “I told you so” route with phyllis, at least not to my face.

Sharon: [ Chuckles ] I hope you don’t think I’m feeling smug about your break-up.

Nick: Nah. I know that’s not your style.

Sharon: And who knows? Maybe not being around phyllis’ unfortunate animosity towards your family will help you get back on track with them.

Nick: Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, I’d like that, but with everything my father’s up to right now, I don’t see it getting any better.

Adam: Dad.

Victor: Hi, son.

Adam: How you doing?

Victor: Uh… concerned about abby.

Adam: Well, I can certainly understand that, but I can see that losing chance has gotten to you, too. Is there anything that I can do to help?

Victor: Well, now, his loss must have affected you, as well. You once were friends, right?

Adam: Yeah, we always had each other’s backs when it counted.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: I saved his life in vegas, and then, um, he took a bullet for me here. I always thought the guy was indestructible.

Victor: All I can tell you is that whoever is responsible for his death — they’re gonna pay.

Adam: Well, count me in. But, uh, while your fleet of investigators take on that job, we have some pressing business to finish here at home.

Victor: Yeah. We’re gonna take care of billy boy.

Lily: So, what do you think will happen next?

Billy: I would like nothing more than that phone to ring and that sob to surrender and admit defeat.

Lily: You think that’s a possibility?

Billy: I wouldn’t bet on it. And you know what that means coming from me. Either way, the time is ticking, and things are about to get very interesting.

Nina: Hi, devon.

Devon: Hey.

Nina: Come on in.

Devon: Thank you.

Nina: I’m so glad that you’re here.

Devon: Of course. I just wanted to check on you guys. Were you able to get any sleep at all?

Nina: Yeah, off and on.

Devon: Yeah.

Nina: You know, it’s been real quiet, so that was nice. Abby’s still in her room. I think she finally got some rest.

Devon: Good.

Nina: And ashley and victor stayed over, so…

Devon: Oh, nice, nice. Is there any news about chance?

Nina: Cricket is on the phone with a contact from the state department.

Christine: I understand, and I appreciate it. I — yeah, just keep me informed, will you? I’ll be at this number all day. Okay. Thanks. Hi, devon.

Devon: Hey. Morning, christine.

Nina: So, any news about my son?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Abby: Hello, everyone! Ooh, good. Someone made coffee.

Devon: How you doing, abby?

Abby: Mmm! I am gonna grab a cup of this. Mm-mm-mmm. And I have a few things to get done. First I need to book the newman jet, and if that’s already spoken for, I’ll fly commercial.

Nina: Whoa, wait a minute. What are you talking about? Fly where?

Abby: Well, I intend to figure out what happened to my husband, why he hasn’t contacted me. Is [Chuckles] That a problem?

Christine: Abby, I don’t mean to be blunt, but that is the worst thing you could do.

Abby: Well, the state department hasn’t contacted me telling me that they found him or his body, unless there’s some information that you haven’t told me yet.

Christine: The spanish authorities are still working through the rubble, along with our people from the state department. I know there’s no official word on chance, but that doesn’t mean you go off —

Abby: It means that maybe chance wasn’t in that building when the bomb went off. Maybe he’s hurt. Maybe he’s hiding. Look, now that I know where that safe house is, I’m gonna fly to spain, and I’m gonna piece together what became of my husband.

Christine: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: So, when do you and ashland leave for peru?

Victoria: We’re shooting for this afternoon. The pilot’s on standby, but it just feels like there’s so much going on all at once.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Your father’s still at your sister’S. He spent the night there.

Victoria: I’m still in shock over the news, mom. My heart just goes out for poor abby.

Nikki: It’s terrible. Victor is so concerned.

Victoria: You know, I spoke with her on the phone first thing this morning, and I’m gonna stop by there. I’m gonna see how she’s doing before we leave for the airport.

Nikki: I know she’ll appreciate that. But you must be overwhelmed, too. How is ashland doing?

Victoria: He’s very determined to get into this experimental treatment program, although we’ve only gotten as far as the initial evaluation, but it’s just — [ Sighs ] There’s so much riding on this.

Nikki: I know.

Victoria: But for now, we are going to remain positive.

Nikki: Well, your father and I are praying that they’ll accept ashland into the program and it’s the answer that you’ve been looking for. But, darling, is there anything else on your mind?

Victoria: You know, dad and adam are going after billy and chanccomm. I don’t know any of the details, and I really don’t want to.

Nikki: I thought you were on board, in theory.

Victoria: I was. It’s just that I didn’t know that it would cause so much stress for ashland.

Nikki: I didn’t realize he was involved.

Victoria: Well, he’s insisted on being kept in the loop. And now he’s angry at billy all over again for dragging gaines to tuscany to try to ruin our wedding. With everything that we’re facing right now, this is just beyond counterproductive.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] I am so sorry to hear this.

Victoria: It’s just the last place that he should be putting his energy right now.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] It’s a terrible situation for you — your father versus the father of your children. I know you would never say this…

Victoria: But?

Nikki: Billy’s done it to himself.

Lily: I didn’t know it was casual day.

Billy: I won’t be going into the office until later. I’m gonna go to the motel and check on our guest.

Lily: You mean your guest, not ours. I want nothing to do with gaines.

Billy: Lily…

Lily: No, if you think I’ve changed my mind about your little plan, then you can think again.

Billy: Can we talk about this, please? I think it’s important that we’re on the same page.

Lily: There’s nothing to talk about. If you’re gonna move forward with blackmailing newman media, then I want no part of that.

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Oh. I know that look. I’ve had that look on my face a lot lately.

Noah: Yeah? What look is that?

Mariah: The one where you don’t want to lie, but you also don’t want to bare your soul about what’s going on.

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Christine: Abby, I have been in constant touch with my contacts at the state department. In fact, I just got off the phone with one of them.

Abby: And what were you told?

Christine: They are committed to getting answers.

Abby: In this lifetime?

Christine: The agents who are working on this are so familiar with that area of spain, as well as the criminal organization behind the bombing. I mean, they are a large group of experienced operatives from both the local jurisdiction and the U.S. They will get to the bottom of what happened to chance and everyone else in this mission.

Abby: Eventually. But what if chance is out there? What if he’s hurt? What if he’s out there hiding? I mean, I can’t just leave him to fend for himself when he needs me the most.

Christine: This group of agents are so good. They’re gonna take care of it.

Abby: They don’t share the same connection with chance that I do, the kind where you just know things about the other person.

Nina: Like if they’re dead or alive.

Abby: Exactly! And it’s that connection that will not allow me to believe that chance is gone, the way that you all do.

Devon: Okay. Hey. Abby, what has changed since yesterday?

Abby: [ Sighs ] Look, I woke up this morning, and I — I realized that I am just going along with someone else’s version of what went down. It’s like I’m giving up on chance. Years ago, we mistakenly thought that chance was dead. Nina and I even went to his funeral. But it turns out that he was faking his death for an investigation.

Nina: The media has confirmed the explosion and that there were casualties.

Abby: I have to follow my instincts. Every fiber of my being is telling me that chance is still alive.

Victoria: Thank you.

Lily: Why are you letting this escalate into a war?

Victoria: What are you talking about?

Lily: Well, your father told billy to his face that he’s coming after chanccomm, which means billy, and you’re just gonna let that happen?

I’m jimmy dean and uh,

Victoria: I am focused on my husband’s health right now. I’m also overseeing a major merger of two corporations, so i have my hands full with more important things. I’m not involved in this little plan of theirs.

Lily: Right, and I should just take your word for it.

Victoria: Since when does billy have you fighting his battles for him?

Lily: Well, they’re coming at him through chanccomm, so that makes it my battle, as well.

Victoria: Well, I don’t know what you expect me to do about it. I’m not involved, as I said.

Lily: Look, clearly your dad wants to hurt billy, and he has his own thoughts on how to handle things, whereas I would prefer a more direct, above-board approach.

Victoria: What does billy have planned?

Lily: Look, I was hoping that you would be able to use your influence to stop things before they get ugly.

Victoria: You know what it sounds like? It sounds like you’re upset about more than someone potentially making a run at chanccomm. It sounds like billy’s being billy and that has created a little conflict between the two of you.

Lily: Well, I thought since you and ashland have a business connection, you would know the difference between a conflict between lovers and an opposing point of view between business partners.

Victoria: If this is so important to you, why would you come to me? Why don’t you just go to the source?

Lily: You know what? You’re actually right. I’m wasting my time with you.

Noah: Yeah, you nailed it.

Mariah: I figured.

Noah: Some stuff happened in england that I haven’t really wanted to talk about. I know the family’s been speculating, though.

Mariah: Oh, yeah. We’ve been making bets. I think that you are banksy, the mysterious artist, so… but seriously, I mean, if you need to talk to somebody…

Noah: You know, it’s really not that interesting. Between the two of us, it’s — it’s a love thing. I’ll get over it. Now, if you want to tell me what you can’t say to other people, you can.

Mariah: Well, um, I’m kind of also going through a love thing, but with dominic. You know, every time I’m away from the baby, it feels like it’s been years.

Noah: I’m sorry.

Mariah: It’s okay. It’s better than it was, but it’s still not easy.

Noah: I can only imagine how tough this is for you. How about we run it off? I mean, it probably won’t work, but we could pretend like it will.

Mariah: Yeah. That sounds like a great idea. I’ll race you.

[ Both laugh ]

Devon: Abby, it’s not giving up on chance to acknowledge that he was a part of a dangerous operation where things went wrong.

Abby: Things did. But my heart is telling me that chance survived, that he is still with us.

Christine: [ Sighs ] I just don’t think you understand what you would be walking into.

Abby: Well, what I do know is that the official view is that chance died in that explosion. So, how hard to you really think the state department is looking for him? Let me tell you — not hard at all.

Christine: No, abby, that’s not the —

Abby: And I also know that if I go there, if I go talk to those people, they’d be much more willing to talk to me, a concerned wife, than an agent from the U.S. Government. I could be able to get answers that these federal agents can’T.

Christine: What you are suggesting is so incredibly dangerous. You would be putting your life at risk, possibly your family.

Abby: Christine, I need to go there. I need to see where it happened.

[ Sighs ] If there’s even the slightest chance that my husband could be out there, that he wasn’t in that building, I need to pursue that. I am doing this. Can you please tell me where my father is? He needs to talk to victoria so I can arrange to get on the newman jet.

Nina: Your mom and dad went for food for when you wake up. They’ll be back soon.

Abby: Fine. Will you please let me know when they return? I’m gonna go pack.

Devon: So, what the hell are we gonna do to stop her from going?

Nina: Maybe we shouldn’T.

Nina: What abby’s decided to do — I don’t know. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea, going to the place where this happened, seeing for herself. I’d even be willing to go with her.

Christine: [ Sighs ] Nina, it would be so traumatic for you.

Nina: But maybe it’s what abby needs just to come to terms. I mean, maybe it’s what we both need.

Devon: Nina, I think that that might be true for you, but not abby right now, not — not considering the 180 she just made overnight. I don’t think she’s in a very strong emotional place. You know? I think that if you went, you would be going to find closure and make peace with what’s happened.

Christine: Whereas abby is reacting impulsively. She’s made up her mind to do this horrendously risky thing with almost no discussion.

Devon: Exactly, and what worries me more than anything is that she’s ready to fly off to someplace she’s never been before and ignore everything we’re saying about how dangerous it is, and she never mentioned dominic’s name, not one time. He’s not even factoring into her thinking right now because she’s so fixated on this idea that chance is alive and she’s the only person that can find him.

Christine: Who knows how she’d react when she’s standing in front of the ruins of that safe house? It is an active crime scene.

Devon: Yeah, no, and we don’t need to find out how she’s gonna react. As abby’s friend who loves her and who cares about her, I’m not signing off on this. I can’T. And I beg of you — do not go along with this, too.

Christine: The last thing we need to do is encourage this. Abby would be putting herself and her family in grave jeopardy, including her infant son.

Billy: There’s some fresh clothes, some toiletries, some food and some plates and a kettle. Make yourself some coffee or tea.

Gaines: Well, look at you. You thought of everything.

Billy: Trying to make sure you keep a low profile. I don’t think you want victor or anyone working for him seeing you out and about.

Gaines: Right. Got it.

Billy: Now, I am still looking into your story about how you escaped from tuscany. You still claiming that that’s all true?

Gaines: Listen, I took one hell of a risk coming back here. I could have just as easily disappeared again.

Billy: But you didn’T. So, why?

Gaines: Because I got a goal in mind — taking down the almighty ashland locke and hitting back at the people that are trying to keep his past buried and shut me up — his new family.

Billy: Well, in order for that to happen, I’m gonna need the letter from camilla rhodes.

Gaines: Mm.

Billy: The original one explaining that she’s leaving nothing to ashland in her will.

Gaines: Don’t worry. It’s in a safe place.

Billy: It’s not in my hands. And it needs to be.

Gaines: Ohh, easy, easy, easy, not so fast. I need to know your plan first. I need to know how you are gonna use it to maximum benefit. Are you gonna write another one of your sensational exposés, tell the world how despicable he really is?

Billy: When the time is right. It’s in the process of being written right now.

Gaines: The hell kind of answer is that?

Billy: It’s an honest one.

Gaines: Let’s get something straight. I am not gonna settle for any vague reassurances. You are not gonna placate me that easily. Do you understand? And I am not taking a single step forward unless I am absolutely certain that I can trust you.

Billy: That’s funny. I feel the exact same way about you.

Adam: A design competition? Well, that’s an interesting promotional idea. Uh, tell me more.

Chloe: Well, we would publicize it in a fashion design program all over north america. Or worldwide. Depends on budget.

Sally: Although anyone 18 or older is free to enter.

Chloe: And then we’ll publish the winners of each level of the competition on newman media website.

Sally: Yeah, and there will be different categories for you to enter your designs. We have sportswear, cruise wear, men’s wear, bridal.

Adam: What kind of prizes are we talking?

Chloe: Well, I was thinking for the grand prize of each division, an all-expenses-paid trip to new york fashion week.

Sally: Including an interview at a top fashion house. It’ll really pull the students in.

Chloe: I mean, listen, we need to do our research, but i think that, with all of our contacts, I think we could really make it happen. So, if we could just —

Lily: Hello. I’m sorry to barge in, ladies. I need five minutes of your time.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Um, we can pick this up later.

Lily: So, adam…

Adam: Mm-hmm?

Lily: …Tell me. What do you want? What will it take for you to leave us alone?

Adam: Will you at least give me a hint about what you’re accusing me of?

Lily: Don’t pretend that you don’t know what I’m talking about. I’m not here to play games.

Adam: What’s on your mind, lily?

Lily: Well, victor made it very clear the two of you are coming after billy and chanccomm, so I’m here to ask — what do you want? Let’s make an arrangement. I am here to negotiate a cease-fire.

Adam: Say what you mean, mean what you say. I admire that. Unfortunately, there’s nothing to negotiate.

Lily: Everything in business is negotiable.

Adam: Look, you have been straightforward, so I will be straightforward with you, as well. Newman media has a plan, and we will move forward with it. For obvious reasons, I won’t get into the particulars with you, but —

Lily: You know there’s room for all of us, right? I mean, newman media is doing great. Chanccomm poses no threat to you. This is purely about victor’s hatred for billy. So, why are you going along with this? I mean, if anyone owes billy peace, especially on account of delia, it’s you. So, what are you doing? I mean, are you — are you trying to appease your father? And, you know, what’s funny is that billy never believed your whole thing about becoming a better person, but I really wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. I have seen women in prison turn their lives around. I know it can be done. So, was I wrong about you? Or are you just beyond redemption? Nope

Sally: [ Laughs ] Okay. Um, wine opener. Coffee mug. Sewing kit.

Chloe: Yeah.

Sally: We could do a mini dressmaker form. And a pincushion, a thimble.

Chloe: Oh, I love the dress form idea. You know, those little doll-sized ones with the little movable arms.

Sally: It’s more like a mannequin, but…

Chloe: Right. Whatever. Both of them. You know, just stuff with our logos on them, tchotchkes.

Sally: Oh! Oh! We could do, like, retro lunch boxes that can also double as, like, mini —

Chloe: Sewing kits?

Sally: Yes! And they could be the consolation prize for our design competition.

Chloe: Nice, nice.

Sally: Oh, my god. I missed this so much.

Chloe: Brainstorming?

Sally: I just feel like we’re in mind-meld.

Chloe: We do really work well together.

Sally: I’d really hoped that coming to newman media would be a good move, but, like, this is far beyond anything I ever dreamed.

Chloe: Aww, I’ve enjoyed it, too.

Sally: We only have one cloud on the horizon — chanccomm.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Sally: You saw how upset lily was when she marched into adam’s office, and I have witnessed some tension between adam and lily’s partner, billy. Something is up.

Chloe: I know. I sensed it, too. I’m just trying not to worry about it.

Sally: Yeah, but don’t you think we should? It could wind up affecting our division.

Chloe: I just wish we could take our generous funding and spin off from newman media, become our own entity, stay away from the drama.

Sally: Yeah. I mean, I don’t really know if that’s the answer ’cause proximity to leadership’s kind of our strength. Adam doesn’t just fund everything. He also gives us access and exposure.

Chloe: Friendly reminder — this banter-flirtation thing you have going on with adam — it won’t fly once chelsea joins the team.

Adam: You’re not wrong. Redemption is a goal of mine. And I think have been successful at turning my life around. But at the end of the day, I am still a businessman, and no competition is better than some. As far as me owing billy some sort of debt, I can’t change the mistakes that I’ve made. And, unfortunately, no matter what I do, billy will never be satisfied. I mean, the minute jill put you two in charge, he’s just used chanccomm to attack me in the most brutal, personal ways possible. Not that he gave you much of a choice in that matter.

Lily: Mm. Are you finished?

Adam: Not quite. I’d, um — I’d actually like to make you an offer.

Lily: Oh. So, you are willing to negotiate?

Adam: No. I’m talking about a job offer.

Lily: [ Laughs ] You’re — you’re kidding, right?

Adam: [ Laughs ] When my father and I — we successfully crush chanccomm and we scoop up the remains, you are more than welcome to come along. I mean, we’ve always thought that you were the reason it succeeded. We have great admiration for you. Billy, on the other hand, only seems interested in using the company as his personal battering ram, going after whomever he dislikes on any given day.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] You know, that’s very ironic, given that’s exactly what you and victor have planned. But, honestly, none of this matters. You will never take chanccomm away from us.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] You really do have quite the poker face. Billy is rubbing off on you. But, uh, given his history of self-destructing, now might be a good time to consider a career move. It’s a bona fide offer. I really hope that you will seriously consider it, given how this is all gonna turn out.

Nikki: About this plan of yours…

Gaines: I put myself in enemy territory coming back to genoa city, surrounded by people that would just as soon kill me as say hello. Now, I did it because I wanted to see ashland get his. I came to you because I thought that our interests dovetailed and I thought that you would protect me and not throw me to the wolves. But if I have misread you in any way, I will be out of here so fast, it’ll make your head spin. So don’t blow this. Either we work together on this or not at all.

Billy: That’s a good point, given that neither one of us trusts the other. So, we take this one step at time. Either one of us can bail at any point.

Gaines: Alright. Sounds like a healthy way to move forward.

Billy: I’m glad we agree. Now, where is the letter? When you hear the word healthy,

Adam: What, um — what’s your question, nikki?

Nikki: I had a very troubling conversation with victoria earlier.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Don’t tell me that billy has gotten to her and now she’s having second thoughts about going after chanccomm?

Nikki: Not at all. She has no interest in protecting him. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with this.

Adam: Okay, well, then what is so upsetting?

Nikki: In case you haven’t heard, she and ashland are getting ready to fly to peru. His chemotherapy isn’t working, and they are hoping to get him into an experimental treatment protocol.

Adam: Yeah. Ashland filled me in.

Nikki: Ah. Well, so you are aware that they are facing an uncertain future. But instead of focusing on his health, your plan has ashland riled up. He’s upset with billy all over again. It’s wasting a lot of time and energy, and it’s creating a lot of negativity at the worst possible time.

Adam: Ashland wanted to be involved. It was his choice. He was pushing for this. So I had no idea that it was problem.

Nikki: Well, it is. That’s why I’m here. Because in your zeal for revenge, I don’t think you have taken everything into account, you or victor. And victor is very busy concentrating on abby, as well he should be.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Uh, well, I appreciate you letting me know.

Nikki: You know, I came away from our talk yesterday believing that you had good intentions, that your desire to be the man you were always meant to be was sincere.

Adam: What exactly are you asking me to do?

Nikki: Well, I can’t be any more specific because I have no idea what you and victor have in mind. I don’t want to know.

Adam: Well, that seems to be the consensus.

Nikki: He has assured me that it won’t have any negative impact on our grandchildren, but I find that hard to believe considering your target is katie and johnny’s father.

Adam: This really is just business, nikki.

Nikki: Oh, please. Don’t insult my intelligence. It’s a lot more than that for your father and for you. So I am asking you to please forego the temporary satisfaction in leveling this man that you seem to detest so much and think about what you’re doing. Please think about the long-term damage it could do to other people caught in the cross-fire.

Billy: Hey.

Lily: Well, so much for taking the high road.

Billy: What do you mean by that?

Lily: Well, I ran into victoria, and she completely stonewalled me, so I went to go see adam. And he was as smug and self-congratulatory as ever.

Billy: Ah, yes, the new and improved adam. It’s all a facade to win hearts and minds.

Lily: I mean, there’s no talking to him. There’s — there’s no reasoning.

Billy: I’m surprised you even tried, lily.

Lily: I had to try. I had to so that I could say i did everything I could and I had no other choice.

Billy: No other choice but to what?

Lily: To do whatever it takes.

Billy: Oh, hell, yeah.

Lily: Yeah, we’re not letting them get away with this.

Billy: I am very happy to hear you say that. And I got something else that i think will make you happy — the original letter from camilla rhodes stating that ashland gets nothing from her will.

Lily: Gaines gave this to you?

Billy: Yes, he did. Now, right there is our ace in the hole.

Christine: Nina, this trip is not an option. Undercover operatives were lost. It is a tumultuous situation, and abby wants to go running around asking about an american who was working undercover?

Devon: It’s just not smart.

Christine: This danger is real. It’s not gonna happen. And I’m sorry, but I will do everything in my power to keep the two of you from getting anywhere near that building.

Nina: Abby and I need this

[Voice breaking] If only just to finally accept that chance is gone and move on. But, you know, thinking about it, what if she’s right? What if he’s hurt and he can’t find a hospital and no one is looking for him?

Christine: Abby is not right. I’m sorry. I wish she knew something we don’t, but she doesn’T. And as painful as it is for me to say this to you… honey, ch– chance is gone.

[ Voice breaking ] And he’s not coming — he’s not coming back.

[ Both crying ]

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Nina: [ Sniffles ]

[ Exhaling heavily ]

Christine: God, I — I have to take this. I’m so sorry.

Nina: It’s okay.

Christine: Nina, I’m gonna come back and check on you. I… trust me on this, please.

Devon: Nina… I would never claim to say that I know what you’re feeling right now. But I do know how a loss like this can overwhelm everything. And it makes it difficult to think rationally when your feelings are raw. I completely understand that. But I can’t stress to you enough how bad of an idea this would be.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

[ Footsteps approaching ] Traveling light to save some time. You know, I was upstairs thinking. Now, I probably shouldn’t be doing this alone. Would one of you be willing to fly to spain with me? Motrin works fast to stop pain where it starts.

Sally: I don’t need any reminders. Thanks. My personal life is under control.

Chloe: Well, listen up anyway. The whole reason I accepted adam’s offer to create this fashion division under the newman media umbrella was because of my best friend — chelsea.

Sally: So you said.

Chloe: She may not want adam anymore — thank god — but she definitely won’t want to see him with anyone else. It will make this unworkable. So, all these good feelings that you have about our collaboration — it will go out the window. So, if you want this as much as you say you do, please, please stick to our original plan and move on.

Sally: Okay. Message received.

Chloe: I sincerely hope you mean that, sally. I know that you have something to prove. And I really — I really think it’s great. It’s a big reason why I decided to bring you on — because making a name for yourself, building credibility and respect, not to mention taking home a big, fat paycheck…

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: …Should definitely be your main focus. Lingering romantic feelings with adam, not so much.

Sally: Okay. Everything you said before that last little bit — that is my main focus. I’m happy being unattached.

Chloe: Good. Because I do share your concerns. Things are about to get real dicey around here, and we really need to focus on protecting our assets.

Adam: I got gaines hidden away. What’s more, I hold the proof that can bury ashland locke and newman media. So you, victor, and ashland are gonna cancel your plans to attack chanccomm. Otherwise, I bring you all down.

Devon: Can we just stop for a second, abby, and think about what you’re talking about doing and think about how reckless it would be to go to a place that’s that dangerous and that unstable, where there’s men and women still risking their lives there every day?

Abby: Chance may be one of them.

Devon: Even if he is, it doesn’t matter. We can’t let you go.

Abby: You can’t let me go look for my husband?

Devon: No, we can’t because there’s people already looking for him, and we’re not gonna let you put your life at risk.

Abby: The authorities have given us no definitive proof that chance was in that building when it blew up. So, what, they expect us to just roll over and accept this? Don’t you want to see what happened for yourself?

Nina: Yes. Oh, my god, yes, I do. I know why you want to go, abby. I’m feeling all the same things.

Abby: Well, great. Great. Yeah, go pack your things. I will handle things on this end.

Nina: No, wait. Let me finish. What you’re proposing to do — it’s a terrible idea. It just isn’t safe.

Abby: I don’t care about the danger.

Nina: It’s not just the danger, though.

Devon: Abby, are you trained, like, to go and do anything like this? Do you have experience in law enforcement?

Abby: The authorities aren’t looking for chance!

Devon: Why would you say that? “A,” you don’t know that for a fact, and, “b,” what are you gonna do when you show up to a crime scene that you weren’t invited to? All the people that are there, the agents — they’re gonna have to stop whatever they’re doing so they can deal with you. Can you please just leave this up to the professionals? I beg you.

Abby: I have left it to the professionals! And they have given me no real answers! Look, I know that I can take this on. I am going to fly to valencia, and I am gonna find out what happened to chance. Whether or not you want to come with me, I don’t care, so stop trying to talk me out of it.

Mariah: If you’re going to spain, what does that mean for dominic? Should I move back in and stay with him?
