Nancy: I just love a man who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty.

Clyde: Yeah, that’s me. My shift’s almost over. Why don’t you pick out a table and we’ll grab some dinner?

Nancy: Um, I have a better idea.

Clyde: What’s that?

Nancy: Why don’t you and i have dinner with chloe and brady? Unless there’s a reason you don’t think we should?

Clyde: Well, I got one pretty good reason. Your daughter hates my guts.

[Sentimental country music]

Chloe: Hey.

Brady: Chloe, you’ve been staring at that screen all morning. You’re gonna get eyestrain.

Chloe: I know, but I have to get this proposal in by tomorrow morning, and it has to be perfect. I’m not gonna give kristen another reason to write me up.

Brady: I saw your first draft this morning, and it was good.

Chloe: Well, good is not good enough in this situation. Any minute, that petty bitch could come walking in through that door.

Leo: Who are you calling petty?

[Tense music]

Xander: So, we agree that ava and gwen must be working together, right?

Sarah: Absolutely. So what do we do now?

Xander: Well, we have to get ava to admit that she helped gwen escape from statesville, and that she did it on the night that abigail was murdered. Oh, right, and that she knew gwen was gonna kill abigail and frame you for it.

Sarah: Is that all? That’ll be a piece of cake.

Xander: Hey, it might not be that difficult. I mean, gwen and ava, they’re business partners, not chums. Ava already rolled on her partner once before. I can make her throw gwen under the bus one last time.

Gwen: No, of course I didn’t kill abigail. But I had motive, and if the cops find out I had opportunity, well, that’s not gonna look good for either one of us.

Ava: Oh, are you threatening me? After I went out of my way to help do you a favor?

Gwen: No. I’m just pointing out that it would be in our best mutual interest to keep our mouths shut.

Ava: Well, don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me.

[Tense music]

[Soft orchestration]

Ej: Sorry, am I interrupting?

Ava: No, not at all. I mean, it is your house. This is my friend gwen. Gwen, this is ej, my brother-in-law.

Gwen: Mm. I know, we’ve met.

Ej: I don’t remember that.

Gwen: Oh, yeah, I’m not surprised.

[Clears throat] It was quite a long time ago. You barely even recognized that I was in the room. You were very focused on getting your million dollars back from xander cook.

[Tense music]

Sarah: Where are you going?

Xander: Gonna have a word with ava.

Sarah: Now?

Xander: Why not? I heard the grieving widow just moved into the dimera place.

Sarah: Yeah, but you have to be prepared if you’re gonna go talk to ava. She’s not stupid. She’s just gonna deny everything.

Xander: Well if she does, I’ll show her the copies we made of the visitor logs and the phone records. We can prove that… ava was in contact with gwen before and after abigail was murdered.

Sarah: Yeah, but we don’t know what they talked about.

Xander: What, you think they were exchanging recipes?

Sarah: All we have is a theory.

Xander: I’ll lean on her. She’ll fold.

Sarah: Mm. I admire your confidence. But ava is as tough as nails. You have to have proof.

Xander: Yeah, you’re right.

Sarah: And we know that ava isn’t the only person that gwen spoke to that day. There’s also her good friend leo stark.

Brady: Mm, what are you doing here, leo?

Leo: It’s a social call. I thought I’d save your asses by saving your company.

Brady: Ooh. He’s gonna save our company. How you gonna do that?

Leo: With this.

[Tense music]

Clyde: Nancy, I know you want chloe and her boyfriend to like me, but… we’ve been going out for a while now, and absolutely nothing has changed.

Nancy: Something has changed, clyde. You and I are living together now. And even though I don’t listen to them, that doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop trying to change their minds about you.

Clyde: Yeah, but you know, whatever you say won’t change the fact that I got a prison record. Now, we’re living together ’cause I need a place to stay here or else I’m violating my parole, and you graciously offered to put a roof over my head when ben and his family left town.

Nancy: I didn’t do it to be nice. I was happy to do it.

Clyde: And that means more to me than you know.

Nancy: You know, I– I think we’re pretty compatible in many ways, even as roomies.

Clyde: Yeah, even as roomies. But you know, you’ve been a really great friend to me. More than anyone else has ever been. Seems like you always got my back. Even when I’m accused of murder.

Jennifer: You ate your whole salad! How about I take you to the square for a treat?

Thomas: I don’t want to go there.

Jennifer: Not even to that place where they serve toffee on the frozen yogurt?

Thomas: I’m afraid to eat toffee now.

Jennifer: Why?

Thomas: My tooth is really loose. See?

Jennifer: That’s the problem.

Thomas: But I can still eat plain frozen yogurt, though.

Chad: I could go for some froyo myself. Thomas. Thomas, don’t run away from me.

[Somber music]

Jennifer: What just happened?

Chad: My kid hates me. It’s my own fault.

This is the sound of better breathing.

Jennifer: Chad, you know thomas doesn’t hate you.

Chad: I wouldn’t blame him if he did. I lost my temper with him yesterday.

Jennifer: Well, all parents do that.

Chad: Not under these circumstances. What? What are you thinking?

Jennifer: Well, I don’t want to upset you further.

Chad: Jennifer, just tell me.

Jennifer: Last night, thomas was worried when you didn’t come home.

Chad: He was?

Jennifer: Yes.

Chad: I should have called.

Jennifer: Jack and i were worried, too.

Chad: Yeah, I’m sorry. I just, I got–I got a little drunk last night and I crashed at sonny’s house.

Jennifer: I know. Sonny texted me, and I told thomas, but he was still scared.

Chad: Why?

Jennifer: Chad. Your son is afraid you’re gonna leave him, the way his mother did.

[Somber music]

[Soft country music]

Nancy: Clyde, I told you the night that we met that I believe everybody deserves a second chance.

Clyde: That meant the world to me.

Nancy: I just–I just wanted you to stop being so hard on yourself. You did the time. And you paid your debt. That’s why, when you were arrested, I felt so bad for you.

Clyde: Well, it was rough, but, you know, it all worked out. And now, here I am with you, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Nancy: Me too. And clyde, I am sure that the man that sold you that stolen bracelet, he’s the one that killed abigail.

[Sighs] It has to be him, right?

Clyde: Yeah. I just wish I could have given the cops a better description of the weasel. You know, I would have been the hero now, you know? The guy who brought that killer to justice.

Brady: Leo.

Leo: Hmm?

Brady: Don’t get too comfortable. That’s my candy. What the hell are you doing here?

Chloe: Yeah, and what is that?

Leo: I saw your ad online for a brand specialist. And since I am a living, breathing brand of my own, one who’s currently between gigs, I thought I would give you first dibs at my services.

Brady: [Chuckles]

Leo: I was thinking I could bring some color to basic black. No offense, but you two might want to stop dressing like pallbearers.

Brady: Okay. Look, chloe and I are busy. We’re busy, so why don’t you just, you know–

Chloe: Go away. And what is that?

Leo: Ah, this is what they call a lookbook. I put it together to give you an idea of my vision.

Chloe: Okay, well, I know what a lookbook is. But these are… only pictures of you.

Leo: I know. Eat your heart out, david gandy. There’s no question I could bring some fab to the drab here at basic black.

Chloe: [Clears throat] Um, should… you call security, or can I do the honors?

Brady: No, I don’t need security. I can throw him out myself. Come on. Let’s go.

Leo: Whoa, whoa, whoa! What is with the hostility?

Chloe: Come on, all three of us know that you are not here for a job.

Brady: Leo, we’re not stupid. All you want to do is stab us in the back.

Sarah: So gwen called leo stark on the day of the murder as well.

Xander: Yeah, I haven’t forgotten about him. I just don’t see leo killing anyone, you know? And lucas didn’t say anything about seeing drag sarah horton running down those stairs.

Sarah: So, you do think it was gwen.

Xander: Leo’s just a conman, but gwen, I mean, clearly, she’ll do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Can’t believe she convinced me she’d changed. What a dummy I was.

Sarah: Hey, no, you have to stop beating yourself up. How could you have known?

Xander: There were signs. I just chose to ignore them.

Sarah: Yeah, but you had been hurt so badly. By me. You know, you just needed to believe in love again.

Xander: I wasn’t hurt by you, I was hurt by that monster kristen dimera. All you’ve ever done is just make me so much happier than I ever deserved to be.

Sarah: No, stop that. You deserve to be happy. And to be loved. And you need to give yourself a little bit more credit. You saw through gwen eventually.

Xander: Yeah, only after she made your life hell. I mean, we both know she wouldn’t have gone anywhere near you if I hadn’t been so stupid.

Ej: Oh, I remember you now. You’re xander cook’s mistress.

Gwen: Yeah, well, xander and I aren’t together anymore.

Ej: Oh, well that’s a point in your favor. But any friend of my late brother’s wife is welcome in this house. I’m sure you’re a great comfort to ava.

Gwen: I certainly try to be.

Ej: Why don’t you stay for drinks and dinner?

Ava: That’s very generous of you, ej, but isn’t it a little late to add another person to the table?

Ej: Oh, we’re very adaptable. So will you stay?

Gwen: Sure. Why not?

Ej: Great. I’ll go shower and change, and then we can get to know each other a little better. Perhaps we’ll even get around to discussing that secret that ava seems to be keeping for you.

[Tense music]

It’s started. Somewhere between a cuddle

Chad: He thought I left him for good?

Jennifer: He was panicky.

[Somber music]

I reassured him, of course, but it was a rough night for him.

Chad: Poor little guy. I’m–I’m sorry.

Jennifer: I didn’t want to tell you, but I thought you needed to know.

Chad: Oh yeah, I did need to know.

Jennifer: Yes, I suppose you did, but I– look, I hate to cause you more pain.

Chad: Jen, I’m not really worried about my pain right now, all right? This is my son we’re talking about. And he thought his dad died last night because he didn’t turn up and he didn’t call. I mean, it’s no wonder he was scared. Him and charlotte kissed their mother goodbye and then went to do see a movie with me, and then when we came back… I mean, my son just wants his mom back, and his dad has no clue what to say to him. I mean, how do I make this okay?

Jennifer: You can’T. None of us can. But the one thing that you can do, we can all do, is we can–we can go through this together. As a parent, I have learned that you cannot always be wise and wonderful for your kids, but you can be there.

Chad: Yeah. I mean, it’s no secret that I’m a mess right now. I got loaded last night because I wanted to feel nothing. Honestly, I am filled with nothing but rage.

Jennifer: I understand that. I do.

Chad: And the truth is I was just too ashamed to face thomas or charlotte last night. The last thing they need is their drunken father staggering around. Not so wise and wonderful, you said? I’m far from that. Yeah, I’m doing my best… to keep it together. And the truth is…

[Somber music]

I’m falling apart, okay?

Jennifer: I know. I know.

Chad: I mean… what do we do without her? You know, what are we– what are supposed to do without abby?

Jennifer: I don’t know.

Clyde: Nancy, why don’t you just take chloe and brady out by yourself?

Nancy: Clyde, you and i are a couple now. Chloe has to accept that.

Clyde: Or we could get some takeout from that chinese place that ben likes, you know, stay home, watch some lady wrestling.

Nancy: Do I have to put you in a hammerlock to get my way? Once you spend time with chloe and brady, they’re gonna learn to love you like I do.

Clyde: Nancy miller, did i just hear you say you love me?

Nancy: I don’t know what I said.

Clyde: [Chuckles]

>>Nancy: But you are gonna have to change that shirt before we go to dinner.

Clyde: Yeah, the fry-o-lator splattered on me. But I do clean up pretty nice, you know.

Nancy: Yes, you do. [Laughs] Okay. Oh, wait, I think you should just go home and shower and put on that new shirt that I bought you.

Clyde: All right. Where will you be?

Nancy: I’m going to pick up chloe and brady, and then– then we’ll text you to let you know where to meet us for dinner.

Chloe: You told my mother that I was on some sort of list of yours, and she knew that you weren’t talking about your christmas card list, so why would brady and I be dumb enough to hire you after that?

Leo: Well, I only said that because she made me so mad.

Chloe: Well, you’re still mad! If we hired you, you’d run this company into the ground.

Leo: Why would I do a thing like that?

Brady: You made it clear that you intend to get even with anyone who came in between you and craig.

Leo: True. But I changed my mind. I decided to be the bigger person and let all that go. If I’m willing to get bygones be bygones, shouldn’t you be?

Chloe: Why would you even want to work here?

Leo: Girl’s gotta eat, right?

Brady: [Laughs] You are unbelievable.

Leo: I like to think of myself as unique, a true original, which is what my designs for basic black would be. Should we talk salary?

Chloe: Get out.

Leo: You two are so tiresome. Well, I guess I’ll just have to start my own brand and bury you. I assure you, it’s nothing personal.

[Mysterious jazz music]

This is majestic.

Xander: Gwen killed her own sister and tried to frame you for it, and you know why.

Sarah: Because she hated abigail. And she wanted me out of the way so she could have a shot with you.

Xander: Right. That’s why I’m gonna be the one to make sure her plan blows up in her face.

Sarah: You know, gwen does seem to be a psychiatrist’s worst nightmare, but there is something about her that I do understand.

Xander: What’s that?

Sarah: Risking everything to be with you.

Xander: Ah, get on with you.

Sarah: No, I mean it. I thought I was losing my mind, but now…

Xander: You’re the sarah I know. The sarah I love.

Sarah: It’s because we’re together. Because we’re really together.

Xander: You did all the hard work all by yourself.

Sarah: No. No, I mean it. We make a really good team.

Xander: Yeah. You’re the brains and I’m the muscle.

Sarah: You are so much more than muscle. Although the muscle is part of your appeal. Do we have to go confront ava right this minute?

Xander: You know, I was just thinking, maybe we should put that off for a bit.

[Sentimental music]

Gwen: I can’t believe ej heard us talking.

Ava: Yeah, well, he doesn’t miss a trick. He’s desperate to get rid of me. Now, he’ll have just what he needs if he figures out that I helped you escape.

Gwen: Why does he want to get rid of you?

Ava: Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I just inherited jake’s shares of dimera enterprises.

Gwen: [Sighs] So he’s gonna want some answers when he gets back.

Ava: Right. So, we need to come up with another big secret. And fast.

Chad: Hey, pal.

Thomas: Hi.

Chad: I’m sorry I– I’m sorry I didn’t come home last night. I’m sorry about a lot of stuff. I– I yelled at you, and that was wrong.

Thomas: It’s okay.

Chad: No, it isn’T. But I didn’t yell at you because I was mad.

Thomas: It sounded like you were.

Chad: I wasn’T.

[Sentimental music]

I’m just so mad at the world.

Thomas: Me too.

Chad: Yeah. We’re both mad… and we’re both sad… because mommy’s gone, and we both miss her very much, and we would do anything for her to come back. I know… your mom was always– she was always so great at coming up with ways to make you feel better. Taking you to the aquarium, just the two of you. I know how much you loved that. And you remember when she let you and charlotte roast those marshmallows on that fancy fireplace?

Thomas: That was fun.

Chad: Yeah. I know. You know, I was just looking at pictures that she took of you guys that night. I can show them to you.

I want to be… I want to be good… at coming up with great ideas like she was. But I just, I– I don’t think I have it in me right now. I just– actually, I can’T.

But maybe– maybe if you have… you know, an idea or think of anything.

Thomas: Maybe…

Chad: Maybe what?

Thomas: I could make you feel better, then you can make me feel better.

Chad: [Sobs] I think that… that might be the best idea that I have ever heard. You know how much you remind me of your mom? You and your sister, both of you. And anytime that I want to see your mom, all I have to do is look at you guys. I love you. Think you could give me a hug?

Brady: Can you believe that guy? Just waltzing in here, expecting a job.

Chloe: Yeah, well now that he’s gone, I have to admit some of these designs are actually really good.

Brady: Chloe, seriously? Did you see the suit that he was wearing? The only thing missing was a boutonniere that squirts water.

Chloe: No, I know leo does have his own personal style. But this? This is actually kind of different. I like it.

Nancy: Why are you looking at pictures of that horrible man?

[Tense music]

Leo: Chloe lane and brady black wouldn’t know good design if it hit them right in the face.

Clyde: That’s exactly what I should do to you.

Nancy: He ruined my life, and then he stayed in salem to rub my nose in it!

Chloe: Which is why I don’t want to have anything to do with him.

Nancy: [Chuckles] Don’t lie to me, chloe lane. I may not be a fashionista, but I know a lookbook when I see one.

Brady: Nancy, you’re right. He came in here asking for a job.

Nancy: The nerve of him!

Chloe: I know! Totally! Which is why we threw him out.

Brady: It’s a good thing I don’t keep a baseball bat in the office, or he would have been crawling out with two broken legs.

Nancy: [Chuckles]

Clyde: Well, I’ve been looking for you. And the cops would be too if I had given them a better description. But I don’t think I’ll forget your face now. Now that you got that deer-in-the-headlights look about you. Careful you don’t wet them fancy pants of yours, man.

Leo: Eww. Since our last association was mutually beneficial, I’m gonna forget you said that. How about a buy you a drink? I’m drinking pinot grigio myself; it’s a modest wine, but I think you’ll be amused as its presumption.

Clyde: Never touch the stuff.

Leo: Hmm. Yours is moonshine in a dirty glass? Hey, hey, hey you’re wrinkling my suit.

Clyde: I almost took a murder rap ’cause of you. They had me in for the murder of abigail dimera. Lucky for me, I had an alibi. But I get the feeling you’re not gonna be half as lucky as I was.

Chad: So, what was– what was the frozen yogurt you and grandma were talking about?

Jennifer: Well, I have a good idea. Why don’t the two of you go get it together?

Chad: No, why don’t– you should come with us.

Jennifer: No, another time. For now, I think you two guys need a boys’ night out.

Chad: What do you think, kiddo? It’s up to you.

Thomas: I think that sounds fun. Let’s do it.

[Sentimental music]

Ej: Oh, by the way, gwen, harold said it was no problem to set another place at the table for you.

Gwen: Lovely.

Ava: Ah, thank you.

Ej: To family… and to new friends.

[Tense music]

Mm, I’m eager to know all about this secret the two of you are keeping. And I can’t but help but wonder if it has anything to do with abigail.

Announcer: Type 2 diabetes?

Nancy: [Sighs] Okay. Now that you’ve explained about talking to that horrible man, let’s not mention his name again, because it just makes me queasy.

Brady: Agreed. As a matter of fact, I was gonna try to convince chloe to get out of here and go get some dinner. You’re welcome to join us if you’d like.

Nancy: Oh, well, funny thing about that, I came here to ask you and chloe to join clyde and i for dinner tonight. Come on, please say yes. I mean, whether you like him or not, clyde weston is the new man in my life. Chloe, he makes me happy. And I just want to share that with the people that I love.

Brady: I hear that he’s living with you now?

Nancy: Yes. I didn’t think I needed to ask your permission.

Chloe: No, you don’T. If he’s the man in your life, then I will gladly go to dinner with–with you guys. And I’ll try to focus on the fact that he makes you happy.

Nancy: Thank you, sweetheart. Brady?

Brady: Well, if you’re good with it, then who am I to argue? I’m in.

Nancy: Great. Okay, let’s go.

[Tense music]

Xander: Here is that mousse you were craving.

Sarah: Mmm, finally. Took long enough to get here.

Xander: Well, you know, takes a minute. I’ve got to find and hunt and kill a moose and whip it up into a creamy dessert.

Sarah: You have a very wry wit, mr. Cook. Mmm. You know what?

Xander: What?

Sarah: That mousse took so long to get here that I developed an appetite for something else entirely different. One that doesn’t require a spoon.

Xander: You know, that’s funny. Because I was getting a bit peckish myself.

Sarah: Hmm.

Xander: But not for mousse.

[Sultry music]

Ava: Why in the world would gwen have any secret that involves abigail?

Ej: Can you answer that, ms. Rizczech?

Gwen: Ah. I see you’ve figured me out then, have you?

Ej: I didn’t put it together until after I had left you. You’re the daughter jack deveraux didn’t know he fathered. The one who returned to salem with a desire to get even.

Gwen: That was a long time ago.

Ej: Must have been. I wasn’t in salem when you seduced my brother and tried to ruin his marriage.

Gwen: Guilty as charged. You see, I was a very angry woman back then. But luckily, I was able to see all the harm that I had caused, and I made peace with abigail, long before she died. My heart goes out to chad. I know how devastated he is over the loss of his wife.

[Tense music]

Chad: Mmm. I don’t care what anybody says, I think that vanilla is the best frozen yogurt.

Thomas: I think chocolate’s better.

Chad: Yeah? What? Are you okay? Is this your tooth? Oh, my gosh, we’ve been waiting forever for this to come out!

Thomas: Will you keep it for me so I can put it under my pillow?

Chad: Will you trust me with something this important?

Thomas: Mom used to do it. You’re gonna have to do some of the stuff mom did.

Chad: I would be happy to. I am gonna guard this with my life.

Thomas: Does the tooth fairy know we’re at grandma’s house?

Chad: Yeah, the tooth fairy’s very smart. She knows where all the kids live, so she’ll find you.

Thomas: Okay, good. But the tooth fairy’s a he.

Leo: You’re looking at me like you think I killed abigail dimera.

Clyde: Tell it to the cops.

Leo: Do we need to involve the cops in this? You’re on parole after a fairly colorful past, and I’ve spent a certain amount of time on the wrong side of the law myself.

Clyde: I told you I’ve been cleared.

Leo: Do the cops know that you fenced the stolen jewelry of a murder victim?

Clyde: [Sighs] I’ll take my chances.

Leo: Well, at least let me finish my wine. I missed happy hour by two minutes and they made me pay full price.

Clyde: Well, drink up, my friend. I’m pretty sure they won’t be serving no pinot grigio where you’re going.

Leo: Well, here’s to the boys in cell block B. Bottoms up.

Clyde: Ahh! Ahh!

[Groaning]

[Up-tempo jazz music]

Xander: Who is soon to be your devoted husband.

Sarah: Mm. That will make me even happier than I am now, if that’s even possible. Ooh, but first, we have some unfinished business to attend to.

Xander: Indeed, we do. We have to make ava cough up what she knows about gwen.

[Tense music]

Gwen: So, will chad and the kids be at dinner?

Ej: No, they’re staying with jack and jennifer. And you two still haven’t told me your secret.

Ava: Okay. It’s about your favorite person, xander cook. Gwen wants him back.

Gwen: It’s true. Yeah. Uh… I thought it was a lost cause, but now that lucas has said that he saw sarah in this house on the very day that abigail was murdered, well, I don’t know, maybe we still have a chance.

Ej: I see you haven’t heard.

Gwen: Heard what?

Ej: It appears that sarah might have an alibi.

Gwen: But lucas said that–

Ej: Lucas and I have a long history. He’s a sot and liar. Soon as I heard he’d implicated sarah, I knew she hadn’t done it. Someone else killed abigail.

I think I might go check on dinner.

Gwen: I cannot believe you told him I’m pining after xander.

Ava: Well, we had to tell ej something, and the best lies have a grain of truth to them.

Gwen: Are you sure it’s a good idea to be living in the same house with the very man who’s out to get you?

Ava: Don’t worry about it. I know how to handle ej dimera.

Nancy: Look who I brought with me. What happened to your shirt?

Clyde: Oh, you wouldn’t believe it. I just ran into the dude that gave me abigail’s bracelet.

Nancy: Really?

Brady: Where the hell is he?

Clyde: He knew I was on to him, threw a drink in my face, and ran out.

Chad: You saw the tooth fairy in the basement of our old house?

Thomas: And it was a man.

Chad: Right. Okay. Look, I want you to promise me that you’re not gonna go down there again, okay, big guy? Those tunnels aren’t the safest place for a little kid, especially by themselves.

Thomas: But I wasn’t by myself. The tooth fairy was there. I told mommy about it. And if you don’t believe me, ask him yourself! Look! There he is!

Sonny: [Sighs] Okay, look, chad, um, I’ve been thinking a lot about what helped me when I thought will was gone. All right, and I remembered that work became very important to me. It gave me structure, helped me put one foot in front of the other.

Chad: Yeah, but I don’t have a job.

Belle: You too, detective hunter. Are you new in town?

Jada: I am. And, please, call me jada.

Belle: Oh, well, welcome to salem, jada. Again, I’m sorry to interrupt. I’ll just let you two get back to work.

Jada: No, no, no, you’re fine. I’m actually on my way out. I have somewhere to be. So shawn’s all yours. See you later, partner.

Shawn: Right. I hope that it’s all right that I referred to you as my wife.

Belle: Of course. I mean, technically, we are still married. And it was really nice to hear. I missed it.

Nicole: Hey.

Eric: Stranger. How’s the ankle?

Nicole: It is better. And I am ready to ditch these things soon.

Eric: I’m sure you will.

Nicole: Yeah.

Eric: Yeah, well, hey, um, better head in.

Nicole: Eric, wait. I just wanted to tell you that you look good. I mean, is that a new shirt?

Eric: Yeah. Yeah, it is.

Nicole: I thought so. I mean, not that I’m familiar with your wardrobe, obviously, but I had a feeling that that was new.

Eric: It is, thank you.

Nicole: Anyway, yeah, yeah, you look good.

Eric: Thanks.

Nicole: Guess you’re really going all out for your big date.

Rafe: When did you become such a cynic about love?

Gabi: Well, maybe when my husband was shot and killed.

Rafe: Okay, but you did find love, with jake.

Gabi: That wasn’t– that wasn’t the same. I realize that in a lot of ways I was trying to recreate what I had with his twin brother.

Rafe: Yeah, well, I mean, it doesn’t mean that you should give up on finding love, right? I mean, what about li?

Gabi: I’m just– I’m not sure about that. I mean, we’re having fun, I like him, but I don’t know if we’ll ever really be a thing. I don’t know.

Rafe: Okay. Well, you never know, right? Give it time. I mean, you and stefan– you didn’t guys love each other at first, did you?

Gabi: No, I hated his guts, and the feeling was definitely mutual. Somehow, we fell in love, and we were so happy. And then he was just… gone. It’s not fair, rafe. Why couldn’t I have gotten more time with him?

Rolf: Mr. Shin. I was wondering when you might look in.

Li: Well, you know me. I like to keep an eye on all of dimera enterprises’ assets. Hope you found everything to be in working order on your return.

Rolf: Yes. Yes, your medical staff appears to have done an adequate job. Thank you for providing the funding for the lab while I was unfortunately incarcerated.

Li: Of course. What could be more important than saving the life of stefano dimera’s son?

[Soft orchestration]

Kristen: I just came from the basic black office, and much to my surprise, it was deserted. And then I find the two of you here, together. Oh, I can’t wait to hear the excuse you cooked up for abandoning work.

Brady: Well, we could say the same thing about you. You’ve been awol for about a day and a half. Where have you been?

Li: It’s funny. When I first uncovered the slush fund for this secret lab, I had all these wild ideas what it might be for. Nuclear weapons, a cure for cancer. Or, knowing this family, something far more sinister. But then I came here and found stefan dimera being kept alive by a mechanical heart. And I must admit, it was far more fantastical, and quite frankly, creepier than anything I’d imagined. And I dare say I did see opportunity… the possibility to leverage some power in the family. After all, this is stefano’s son, his namesake. That has to be worth something, right? So, yes, I continue to fund this operation and awaited your release from prison.

Rolf: You did the right thing.

Li: Did I? So you’re saying it was a good idea that I placed all of this trust in you, only to find out you’ve been holding out on me?

Rolf: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Li: Oh, no? Then I assume you were just about to tell me. You put jake’s heart in stefan’s body.

[Dramatic music]

Rolf: Jake’s heart in stefan’s body? What makes you think I’ve done such a thing?

Li: Well, I’m no doctor. Maybe it’s just a businessman’s intuition. Or would you believe I’ve been calling a lot of those psychic hotlines lately? Oh, you know what? I remember. It was all the surveillance cameras I had installed while you were away. It was that I watched as you and kristen wheeled in jake’s lifeless body and I watched as you wheeled him back out again later, a nasty scar running down his chest.

Rolf: And I was just about to tell you–

Li: I can’t wait to hear this.

Rolf: But I– I didn’t think it was prudent to inform you until I was certain that the procedure was a success. Until then, I thought it best to keep it just between myself and kristen. No one else knows, I assure you. Not even stefan’s brothers.

Li: For future reference, rolf, don’t ever keep me out of the loop, you hear me? As far as you’re concerned, I am the loop.

Rolf: Yes, sir.

Li: I would hate for your funding to suddenly dry up, for all of your work to just disappear.

Rolf: Message received.

Li: Good. Well, now that we’ve got that cleared up, was it a success?

Rolf: Oh, yes. Yes, it was a great success. I just need to give stefan time to acclimate to his new heart, and then I’ll take him off the anesthesia.

Li: How much time are you talking about? When do you get to have your dr. Frankenstein moment?

Rolf: I’d say an hour or two. And then stefan O. Dimera will make his return to the living.

Li: Impressive. It’s very impressive. But I’m afraid that doesn’t work for me.

Gabi: What is up with all the romantic advice? Are you some sort of expert now that you’re married? You growing cupid wings back there?

Rafe: No, no wings. But, you know, I do have a bow and arrow. It’s in the closet somewhere.

Gabi: Where’s the diaper?

Rafe: Oh, wow. Really? Is it such a crime that I want my sister to be as happy as I am?

Gabi: I am happy! Happy enough!

Rafe: Oh, happy enough. That’s wonderful. Great. Okay. I guess cupid’s work is done here.

Gabi: All right, okay. Look, I promise not to be a pessimist, and I will try to believe I’ll find love again. There, you happy now?

Rafe: Happy enough.

Gabi: [Laughs] Cupid’s got jokes now. Great. No, but you know what? You’re right. Maybe li and I will get serious. I mean, we do have a great time when we’re together. The sex is off the charts.

Rafe: No. No, no. Please. I do not–I do not need to hear about that, okay?

Gabi: You were the one poking around in my love life.

Rafe: Okay, that’s all good, but I do not need to–

Gabi: I will say, my one complaint is that he’s a little hard to read. You know, I’m not sure if he’s just guarded or if he has something to hide.

Rafe: Oh, cupid doesn’t like that.

Gabi: I mean, it’s probably nothing, it’s just, you know me. We’re talking about me here. I tend to read far too much into things and–

Rafe: Mm-hmm.

Gabi: Okay, exhibit a, I overheard him saying “I love you” to somebody on the phone, and I jumped to secret girlfriend.

Rafe: Not a far leap.

Gabi: It was his mother.

Rafe: Definitely a smaller leap.

Gabi: Suffice to say, I am the evel knievel of jumping to conclusions.

Rafe: Yeah, well, you’re not alone.

Eric: So how did you know…

Nicole: I’m stalking you. It’s just a bad joke. I’m kidding. No, I went to the station yesterday to visit rafe, and I overheard you and the detective making plans, so…

Eric: Why didn’t you say hello?

Nicole: Oh, yeah, the key ingredient when setting up a date with a new person, the ex-wife. Mm-hmm. I don’t think jada would’ve been thrilled. Or maybe she would’ve. I don’t know. Can you imagine anything more awkward?

Eric: I suppose you’re right.

Nicole: Yeah.

Jada: Hi, eric.

Eric: Hi.

Jada: Mrs. Hernandez.

Nicole: Oh, goodness, please call me nicole.

Jada: Nicole.

Nicole: Yeah.

Jada: Sorry I’m early, but I was trapped in an awkward position at the station, and I needed to get the hell up out of there.

Nicole: Yeah, I know the feeling.

Shawn: So… what brings you here?

Belle: Well, I knew it was your first day back, and I wanted to see how you were doing.

Shawn: Well, to be honest, I had a rough night. You know, I woke up in the middle of the night to imaginary cries. I ran down to the crib, and I was half-asleep, only to realize that–

Belle: Right. Shawn, I’m so sorry.

Shawn: You know, I’m glad to be back at work. So it’s good. It’ll take my mind off of it. So how was your morning?

Belle: Oh, well, it was kind of crazy, actually. We had to resolve a lot of legal issues around jake dimera’s death.

Kristen: Well, in case you haven’t heard, my brother was shot in broad daylight, and I wasn’t aware that I needed an employee’s permission to take time out to mourn him.

Chloe: I’m really sorry about what happened with jake, but I didn’t think you two were particularly close.

Kristen: I’m not talking to you. In fact, I came to talk to brady in private. Now, if you don’t mind–

Brady: Don’t treat chloe like that.

Kristen: Well, now that I’m overseeing your company, I can treat chloe any way I’d like while she’s on the clock. Now, chloe, I need to see the merino deal. So if you could send me the file right away…

Chloe: Are you serious?

Kristen: I would hate to write you up again.

Brady: Kristen.

Chloe: No, it’s okay, brady. I would be more than happy to send you that file.

[Uneasy music]

Brady: Was that necessary?

Kristen: Necessary? No. Fun?

[Laughs] You bet your ass.

Brady: Kristen, well, we’re in private now, so what is it? What is it you want to talk about?

Kristen: Us. Shingles.

Shawn: So jake dimera married ava vitali right before he died?

Belle: Apparently. And he didn’t leave a will, so she inherited all of his dimera stock.

Shawn: Fun.

Belle: That’s not really the word that I would use. And needless to say, ej wasn’t pleased, so–

Shawn: Right. So, you know, how are things with you and ej?

Belle: Awkward, but cordial. It was the first time we’d seen each other since I ended things.

Shawn: I see.

Belle: He did ask if you and I were getting back together.

Shawn: And?

Belle: And I told him the truth, that I don’t know. But I do know that I love you, and, well, if it’s all right with you, I’d like to move home.

Jada: There was this weird tension when shawn introduced me to his wife.

Eric: Belle.

Jada: You know her?

Eric: Belle’s my sister. Shawn’s my brother-in-law. Unfortunately, they are separated.

Jada: Ah. So that’s what shawn meant when he said the marriage was complicated.

Eric: Yeah. You have no idea. But shawn, you know what? You’re gonna love working with him. He’s a good guy.

Jada: Yeah, he seems like it.

Eric: Well, now that you’ve got your work situation together, why don’t we work on helping your living situation?

Jada: Absolutely.

Eric: You want to see the room?

Jada: Oh, yes.

Eric: Good.

Jada: Business first, and then after that, we can get started with our lunch date?

Eric: Yeah, let me just grab the key behind the bar.

Jada: Okay.

Chloe: Nicole, hey!

Nicole: Oh, gosh!

Chloe: I’m so glad I ran into you. I’m sorry, did I scare you?

Nicole: No, it’s okay.

Chloe: What are you doing?

Nicole: Nothing. No, I was just fixing my makeup.

Chloe: Oh, well, you look fabulous to me.

Nicole: Thanks. So what’s up?

Chloe: Well, brady and i just had a run-in with guess-who. I left brady with kristen, but in the meantime, I need to send her the files to the merino project. Do you have the latest version?

Nicole: I do, right here in my laptop.

Chloe: Okay, great. Is there any way you can email them to me right now so I can go save brady from her?

Nicole: Sure. Yeah. Hey, you know what? Why don’t we go inside? I’ll pull up the files and get you all set.

Chloe: Oh, great. Thank you.

Nicole: Mm-hmm.

Chloe: Do you need any help?

Nicole: Oh, well, I got three legs at the moment. Ready to get rid of these things.

[Soft music playing]

Rafe: And when I saw nicole in eric’s arms, I kind of lost it. He had just rescued her from a life-threatening situation, and all I could think was “get your damn hands off of her.”

Gabi: But now you know.

Rafe: Yeah, well, to be honest, my jealousy didn’t end there. You know, because now I had to go after the guy who had just attacked nicole, and that’s when eric volunteered to take nicole to the hospital and make sure her ankle was checked out and– yeah, I did not like seeing them together like that. Yeah, so just– I mean, just please tell me I’m just being an insecure fool.

Gabi: Not necessarily.

Rolf: I thought you and i were on the same page, that we must do everything possible to revive stefano’s namesake.

Li: Yes, I was totally on board, at first. But since then, I’ve become personally involved with stefan’s widow.

Rolf: You and gabi hernandez?

Li: We’ve become pretty close over the past few months. And if she suddenly finds her long-lost love alive and well and strolling through the square, then she’ll go running back into his arms in an instant, and I’ll be left in the cold. I’m not about to let that happen.

Rolf: So? What are you suggesting?

Li: I need our patient to have an unexpected setback.

Rolf: Are you asking me to pull the plug on stefan?

Eric: All right, here we are. Like I said, it’s nothing too fancy, but the rent is reasonable. And there’s nothing better than waking up to the smell of bacon and coffee from the kitchen downstairs. You know what? I’ll even throw in the family discount.

Jada: You got a brady guarantee?

Eric: My name’s not on the sign for nothing.

Jada: So which room has your name on it?

Eric: I’m literally right down the hall. You can just holler if you need anything.

Jada: You don’t think that’ll be an issue? I mean, what if our date is a complete disaster?

Eric: We’re gonna be fine.

Jada: Okay, mr. Confident. Well, in that case, I have two questions.

Eric: Shoot.

Jada: One, can I change the artwork? It’s a little too holiday inn for me.

Eric: I painted those.

Jada: You did not.

Eric: No, I didn’T. Of course. Of course you can redecorate however you like. And the second question?

Jada: How soon can I move in?

[Uneasy music]

Chloe: You good?

Nicole: Yeah, thanks. I can’t believe this.

Chloe: I know. Kristen is being so unreasonable, and I don’t see any light at the end of this tunnel.

Nicole: Yeah, that’s awful too. I was talking about eric.

Chloe: Oh, what about him?

Nicole: Well, he’s on a date. That new detective, jada hunter.

Chloe: Oh, I was wondering who that was. So what’s the problem?

Nicole: Um, hello? They just went upstairs? I mean, they’re on their first date. They just went right past lunch and straight for dessert.

Chloe: So you think they’re having sex?

Nicole: Well, I doubt they’re playing checkers.

Chloe: Come on, it’s eric. He’s not the type of guy who’ll jump into bed with someone he just met.

Nicole: I mean, he did just get out of the priesthood.

Chloe: Okay, okay, say that you’re right, say they’re hooking up. What’s it to you? I mean, you are married to rafe, right?

Gabi: I’m not saying you have anything to worry about. I’m just saying it’s only natural to feel a little threatened by eric. I mean, nicole and eric were each other’s first loves, and obviously, they have a bond, a strong bond that could never be broken.

Rafe: Well, okay, great. Excuse me while I throw myself out that window.

Gabi: However, they had their shot at happily ever after, and it ended in divorce. Will told me they couldn’t make it work because they were too completely different people, and that has not changed.

Rafe: You know, I would just feel so much better if eric was still a priest and living halfway around the world.

Gabi: Excuse me, do not sell yourself short, cupid. You are a catch too. Okay, any woman would be lucky to have such a great guy like you. Nicole made a very smart choice. Don’t you forget that. Come here. Get over here.

Rafe: Okay.

Rolf: This is stefano dimera’s son, and I refuse to take his life, and I won’t allow you to do it either! I’m a man of science, but I have to resort to fisticuffs, huh, I will.

Li: Relax, rolf. You can put your dukes down. I’m no killer.

Rolf: But you said–

Li: I’m merely asking you to slow down stefan’s recovery. You can bring him back to life eventually, just not today. I need more time to strategize about how to deal with his return, both personally and professionally.

Rolf: What about kristen? I told her to expect stefan’s resurrection in a couple of hours.

Li: Well, science is tricky, especially that of the “mad” persuasion. Tell her you made a slight miscalculation.

Rolf: I’m not mad. And I never miscalculate.

Li: Look, I don’t care what you tell her. But until I say otherwise, stefan dimera remains on ice.

Brady: There is no us. See, that was easy. Conversation’s over.

Kristen: Whether you like it or not, brady, there will always be an us. We share a child. And I have waited long enough to see her. It’s time you bring her back from california.

Brady: She’s having a really good time in california with tate and theresa.

Kristen: Oh, wow, yeah, and knowing theresa, she probably has our daughter addicted to drugs by now.

Brady: Stop! That’s not fair.

Kristen: Oh, no, you wanna know what’s not fair? What’s not fair is that I am free, I’m finally free, and I still don’t get to see my daughter. Brady, I miss my little girl. And I know she misses me too.

Brady: Fine. Fine, I’ll bring her home. But I’m not about to start taking demands from you about her. She is our daughter, but I have full custody. Don’t forget that.

Kristen: How could I?

Brady: However, you’ve always been a good mother to her. I know that. So I may be willing to reexamine our custody arrangement under one condition, kristen.

Kristen: And what’s that?

Brady: I’ll give you shared custody, but if and only if you resign from basic black and you leave chloe and me the hell alone.

Shawn: You want to move back home?

Belle: Well, I know that you’re hurting and, well, I want to be there for you. And I thought, you know, we could work on our marriage. And just so you know, I’m not expecting things to just go back to the way they were. I thought, you know, I could sleep in claire’s room at first.

Shawn: So, yeah, I’m– separate rooms at first, but you’re gonna be home. And we’re gonna be under the same roof again, so–

Belle: I thought it’d be a good place to start. So what do you think?

Shawn: I think I’d like that very much.

Nicole: Just because I’m not married to eric anymore, I– look, I still care about him, okay? I don’t want to see him get hurt.

Chloe: You’re afraid he’s gonna throw out his back or something?

Nicole: Ha-ha. It’s not funny. You know what I mean.

Chloe: Oh, come on, he just met this woman. You think she’s gonna break his heart already?

Nicole: Or–I don’t know. He barely knows her, so…

Chloe: Oh, my god. You’re right. You know what? I think she’s probably a serial killer, and she’s looking to kill an ex-priest.

Nicole: You are not helping at all.

Chloe: Oh, there they are. So she didn’t kill him. That must mean that they were– well, it was pretty quick. Eric must be out of practice.

Nicole: Quiet. They’re coming over here.

Eric: Hi.

Nicole: Hi.

Chloe: Hey, hi. Eric, hey, how are you?

Eric: Good, chloe. It’s nice to see you.

Chloe: Nice to see you. Who’s your friend?

Eric: This is jada hunter. This is chloe lane. She’s dating my brother.

Jada: Oh.

Chloe: Nice to meet you, jada.

Jada: You too.

Chloe: Haven’t I seen you around the salem inn?

Jada: Yes, I’ve been staying there since I got to town.

Eric: Yeah, she’ll be renting a room upstairs. I just finished giving her the tour.

Chloe: Oh. That’s nice. Well, it was nice to meet you.

Jada: Likewise. And I hope I can see you somewhere besides the salem inn.

Chloe: I’m sure we will.

Eric: Good to see you all. We’ll be going.

Chloe: Okay, goodbye, guys.

Nicole: Bye.

Chloe: She seems lovely, for a serial killer. Oh, come on. At least they weren’t having sex.

Nicole: Oh, no, they’re just living together.

Rolf: Exactly how long do you want me to keep him sedated?

Li: We’ll have to play it by ear for now. Things at dimera have been a little chaotic over the past few years, to say the least. I want to make sure stefan’s return has the desired impact. It’s supposed to be good for the company, and me. Not to mention my relationship with gabi.

Rolf: I never liked that woman.

Li: I’m aware. You nearly got her thrown in prison a few years ago, for purposefully giving her the wrong drug for jake.

Rolf: I did enjoy playing mind games with that annoying shrew.

Li: Easy, dr. Rolf.

Rolf: Yes, of course, sir. But I can’t honestly can’t comprehend what stefan saw in her. She wasn’t right for him.

Li: On that, we agree. All the more reason to go along with my plan. After I solidify my relationship with gabi, she’ll want nothing to do with stefan. Sound good?

Rolf: Keeping stefan sedated will give him more time to heal. That I have no problem with. However, I’m not the one pushing for immediacy. And I don’t like the idea of lying to kristen. To be perfectly frank, that woman scares me.

Li: Yes. She’s a wild card. But I can assure you, rolf, I’m the one you should be afraid of.

Kristen: Wow. You’re seriously using our daughter as leverage against me?

Brady: You forced my hand. Kristen, I don’t want to be negotiating with you like this, but you’re the one that decided to insinuate yourself into my workplace.

Kristen: Yeah, well, a woman’s got to make a living.

Brady: Oh, stop. All you want to do is torment chloe and me. And I have a news flash for you. I’m not gonna sit around and let you harass the woman that I happen to love. So if you want custody of your daughter, you’ll quit!

Kristen: Wow, I have to admit, I’m impressed, brady. I mean, that was a gutsy move. Something that I would do. I have to respect that.

Brady: Hmm. So we have a deal, right?

Kristen: No. You can take your deal and shove it. We women are in the know about everything.

Shawn: I’m–I’m really happy that you’re coming back home, belle. And I think you’re right. I think it’s best that we– you know, we take this slowly.

Belle: Well, I’m glad we’re on the same page. There is one other thing I want to say just to clear the air–

Shawn: No, you don’t have to do–

Belle: Shawn, listen. For months, I thought that jan’s baby was the source of all our problems, and I’ll admit that there were times that I wished that he wasn’t a part of our lives, but I never, ever wanted you to lose him like that.

Shawn: Thank you. I appreciate that.

[Tender music]

[Knock at door]

Rafe: Yeah, come in.

Nicole: Hi.

Rafe: Oh, well, this is a nice surprise. What are you doing here?

Nicole: Well, I was missing my husband, and I thought I’d hobble over here and say hi.

Rafe: Well, I’m glad you did. Hey. Can I take these?

Nicole: Well, sure.

Rafe: I got you. There we go.

Nicole: Thank you, honey.

Rafe: Aww.

Nicole: Okay.

Rafe: There we go. Hi.

Nicole: Hi. Oh, by the way, I met gabi’s new man, li shin. You work with him, don’t you?

Nicole: Yes, he’s attended a few basic black meetings. Seems like a good guy.

Rafe: Yeah. So I hope you’re not upset, but I did invite them over for dinner sometime soon.

Nicole: Yeah, okay, sounds good.

Rafe: Great. Good, good. So how’s your morning going?

Nicole: It’s pretty good. Yeah. Nothing unusual.

Jada: It’s nice you and your ex-wife get along so well. When me and my ex are together, it’s still major drama.

Eric: So you were married?

Jada: For several years.

Eric: May I ask what happened?

Jada: We were both very career-driven people, and we just saw each other less and less. When we did find time to be together, all we did was argue. If I was hot, he was cold. If I wanted a dog, he wanted a cat.

Eric: I’m more of a dog person, myself.

Jada: I knew I liked you.

Brady: I can’t believe that you were willing to give up custody of your daughter out of sheer pettiness.

Kristen: Who says I’m willing to give up custody? See, now that I’ve got a full pardon from the governor, I intended to open up our current arrangement anyway. See, any decent lawyer should be able to get me shared custody now that my record is wiped clean.

Brady: I will fight it.

Kristen: You’ll lose. So, no, brady, I’m not quitting my job, especially now that I need to provide for rachel.

Brady: Okay. Then I guess I’ll see you in court.

Kristen: I’m looking forward to it. Let me know when rachel’s back in town.

[Tense music]

Belle: If it’s all right with you, I’ll bring my things over after work.

Shawn: Yeah, that works for me. I’ll make dinner. You know, I can grill some steaks.

Belle: Oh, yes, let’s sit outside and eat. I missed my garden.

Eric: I would like to propose a toast. To better artwork and warmer temperatures and furry little friends. Oh, last but not least, new beginnings.

Jada: I’ll drink to that.

Chloe: Hey. So how did things go with kristen?

Brady: I tried to get her to quit. She didn’t go for it.

Chloe: Things are never gonna be easy with her, are they?

Brady: I may’ve lost this round, but I promise you, I’m never going to let her come between us. Okay?

Kristen: Are you ready to wake stefan up?

Rolf: Actually, I’ve been monitoring his vitals, and the numbers aren’t what I would like them to be. I think we should wait.

Kristen: What? For how long?

Rolf: That’s hard to say. Could be a while.

Kristen: I don’t like what I’m hearing, rolf.

Shawn: Ah, so you are detective hunter. I’m shawn brady.

Jada: Hi, nice to meet you. And it’s jada.

Shawn: Jada. Jada, well, welcome to salem pd.

Jada: Thanks. I know you’ve been short-staffed with the grants leaving.

Shawn: Yeah, and with me on paternity leave.

Jada: Right. Congratulations. But what are you doing here? I thought you still had a few weeks left with your baby at home.

Shawn: Well, actually, it turned out that the baby wasn’t mine.

Belle: How did you know I needed that?

Brady: Because you haven’t moved from this spot all morning. How long have you been at this?

Belle: I don’t know, I’ve been awake since, like, 6:00 A.M.

Brady: Sis, you are locked in. You almost finished with what you’re working on, or what?

Belle: No, not really. Ever since jake died, dimera enterprises is in complete turmoil.

Shin: [Yawns] I didn’t hear you get up.

Gabi: Oh, don’t mind me. You can keep sleeping.

Shin: You’re already dressed and pacing. What’s on your mind?

Gabi: Ava.

Shin: She dropped quite a bombshell last night, moving into the dimera mansion.

Gabi: Thanks to ej’s invitation. I don’t like it. I don’t like it one bit.

Ej: Don’t look at me like that, father. This is hardly the first time we’ve had to pick up the pieces after one of your children married an unsuitable partner. Stefan’s marriage to gabi saddled us with problems for years. And jake’s union with ava vitali could prove even worse, but don’t worry. I’ll make this work to our advantage. You can count on me to keep the family and the company together. Wonder what’s keeping ava. I hope she hasn’t decided not to move in.

[Doorbell ringing] Oh, showtime.

[Monitor beeping]

Kristen: [Sighs] Where did he go?

Rolf: Where did what go?

Kristen: Jake’s body. Did you perform the procedure?

Rolf: Yes. Yes, I told you I would. I removed his heart and transplanted it into stefan’s body.

Kristen: Rolf, did something go wrong?

[Soft orchestration]

Ej: You should’ve called to tell me you were ready. I would’ve sent someone for your things. Is the rest of it out in the car?

Ava: No, that’s it. I like to travel light. Well, things do look a lot different from the last time I lived here, when I was john’s guest.

Ej: Not really john, though, was it? More like robojohn, the brainwashed memory-wiped version.

Ava: Right.

Ej: Well, in any case, I trust your experience this time will be better.

Ava: Well, I guess we’ll see.

Ej: Trust me, your my brother’s widow. That makes you family, which means you’re entitled to the full dimera experience.

Ava: Yeah? And what’s that exactly?

Ej: Well, for starters, for as long you stay here, your wish is harold’s command. At any time of day or night, just inform him if there’s anything you need. Your comfort is his top priority.

Ava: Aren’t you laying it on a little bit thick here, ej?

Ej: I’m not sure I understand.

Ava: Oh, come on. We both know why you invited me to stay here. Keep jake’s widow close and his dimera shares closer. Well, that is at least until you get rid of me so you can take them over for yourself.

Shin: You don’t trust ava.

Gabi: Trust her? When she lived with my brother, I almost got a dog as a food taster because I was afraid she’d poison me with her chicken cacciatore.

Shin: She certainly has a colorful past.

Gabi: Ugh, former child actors have a “colorful past.” She was a straight-up killer and a mob boss.

Shin: She claims to have reformed.

Gabi: Oh, please. She’s probably trying to figure out the best way to stab me in the back.

Shin: But why would she do that when you hold all the cards? You know there’s no marriage to jake. All you’d have to do is reveal the truth and she’d be left in the cold with nothing.

Gabi: Question is, is she smart and stable enough to realize that?

Shin: She’s no dummy. We know she’s ambitious. You of all people know the power that comes with being a dimera widow.

Kristen: Rolf, what are you telling me? That both of my brothers are dead now?

Rolf: Relax, kristen. I assure you I have everything under control.

Kristen: What are you–? What does that mean?

Rolf: It means I closed jake up and returned his body to the morgue. No one will ever know his heart is missing.

Kristen: Are you sure?

Rolf: Why would they check? His remains will be interred as befits the son of stefano dimera, in the family crypt.

Kristen: Okay. And stefan?

Rolf: He’s right here.

[Machine beeping] You see? Jake’s heart now beats in stefan’s chest.

Migraine attacks?

Brady: So all this working, are you sure this isn’t just to get your mind off the whole scenario with jan’s baby?

Belle: You know about that?

Brady: I do. The baby is not shawn’S. Marlena told me. So what does this mean?

Belle: What does it mean in regards to…

Brady: Belle, you and shawn, I mean, have you guys talked?

Belle: He came to me yesterday hoping I could help keep evan from taking the baby, but, you know, he had a court order and paternity tests.

Brady: Are you sure those tests are legit?

Belle: Well, kayla confirmed it.

Brady: So shawn just had to hand that baby over to that lunatic?

Belle: Yeah, I was there and it was just as awful as you might imagine. He didn’t have any warning, he didn’t have any time to prepare or say a proper goodbye.

Brady: Poor shawn. I know he was really starting to bond with that little guy too.

Belle: Yeah, and now he and evan are on their way to new zealand and shawn may never see him again. I mean, I could just see it in his face that his heart was just broken.

Jada: So the real father just showed up, took the baby, and went?

Shawn: Yep. That was that. Fully sanctioned by the court.

Jada: I’m so sorry. If you need to take some more time off–

Shawn: No, no, no. Staying busy– that’s the best thing for me.

Jada: I get that. It’s the best and worst part of the job. I mean, you’re in, you’re all in.

Shawn: Yeah. Yep. So how’s your first week been?

Jada: Well, you could say that they threw me into the deep end.

Shawn: Wait, what happened?

Jada: I came across an armed robbery the other day and had to discharge my weapon. The perp didn’t survive.

Shawn: Oh, wow. I–I’m sorry, I didn’t know.

Jada: I had no choice, but–

Shawn: Yeah, well, taking a life, it’s never easy even if it’s justified.

Jada: Yeah.

Shawn: Sure you don’t need a few days off?

Jada: No, no, I’m good, I just need to deal with what happened and just keep moving forward.

Rafe: Well, what jada didn’t tell you is that she’s a hero for what she did that day. She saved ava’s life.

Ej: Look, my only goal is to protect my family. Gabi is a threat, obviously, which is why I need you to vote her out at the next shareholders’ meeting.

Ava: And when’s that gonna be?

Ej: As soon as possible.

Ava: Yeah, you know, I really do appreciate you letting me stay here and all, but I can’t promise you my vote.

Ej: What? Why not?

Ava: Well, because I know that jake was on gabi’s side and I want to honor his wishes.

Ej: Jake had a complicated relationship with gabi at best. You don’t owe her your loyalty.

Ava: Yeah, she also offered me a job at dimera.

Ej: [Chuckles] Has she?

Ava: Yeah.

Ej: Clever of her.

Ava: Mmm.

Ej: You do know I would offer the same thing if I became ceo?

Ava: Yeah. Bird in the hand.

Ej: I understand. Just do me a favor. Think about it. I promise I won’t pressure you.

Ava: I appreciate that.

Ej: Now, why don’t i show you your room?

Gabi: My gut tells me that ava accepting ej’s invitation to live at the mansion is not good news for me.

Shin: You think they’re going to form some sort of partnership against you?

Gabi: Ej doesn’t do anything that doesn’t further his own cause.

Shin: Well then, why don’t you use the situation to your own advantage?

Gabi: How?

Shin: Use your leverage over ava to make her keep an eye on ej for you.

Gabi: And you think I can trust her to tell me the truth?

Shin: What choice does she have? If she crosses you, you’ll blow the truth about her and jake’s fake marriage sky-high.

Gabi: Nothing earns loyalty like a little blackmail.

Shin: I wouldn’t use that word, but yes, I believe she’ll do as she’s asked.

Gabi: I hope you’re right.

Shin: I am. Question is, will you?

Rafe: I have no doubt that if jada hadn’t fired her gun when she did, ava vitali would be dead right now.

Shawn: Oh, sounds like some quick thinking.

Jada: I was just doing my training.

Rafe: Oh, no. I saw her in action and we are lucky to have her on the force.

Shawn: Nice, well, I’m excited to work with you.

Jada: Thanks. I heard a lot of good things about you too.

Rafe: Oh, this guy? Shawn? He’s one of the best detectives that we have. And you being back, does that mean…

Shawn: Yeah. I’m back.

Rafe: Good, I’m glad, because we could use the manpower on the force right now.

Shawn: Yeah, I know. I’ve been going through some files and your guys’ case load, it’s pretty heavy.

Rafe: Mm-hmm, yeah, which is why I was thinking that, well, maybe the two of you could work together. What do you think about being partners?

Belle: I was with shawn after evan took the baby. And I just– I didn’t know what to say to him. I could see he was hurting, but this baby is the reason our marriage fell apart.

Brady: Belle, belle. Jan. Jan’s the reason your marriage fell apart.

Belle: I know. It’s not that I don’t feel for what shawn is going through. Of course I do.

Brady: Well, is there a chance you two are gonna get back together? There’s no baby in the way now.

Brady: Uh-huh, wow. You know what they call that, belle? They call that avoidance– what you just did.

Belle: Oh, really? Do they?

Brady: Yeah, she got tired of answering her brother’s questions about her and shawn.

Chloe: Is she okay?

Brady: She’ll be okay. I know why you’re here. You’re wondering why I’m not at work, aren’t you?

Chloe: Maybe.

Brady: Don’t worry, I’m not going to leave you alone with kristen at the office. So if you’re ready to go, I’m ready to go.

Chloe: Actually, I’ve already been to the office and guess what. No sight of kristen.

[Mysterious music]

Kristen: You performed the transfer.

Rolf: I did.

Kristen: So his heart is beating, he’s breathing on his own, so I take it the surgery was a success? It was a success, wasn’t it?

Rolf: Well–

Kristen: A simple yes or no answer will do, rolf.

Rolf: Yes, but–

Kristen: But? But what?

Shin: Mm. You seem more relaxed.

Gabi: I am definitely more relaxed, thanks to you.

Shin: Does this mean you’re feeling better about the situation at dimera?

Gabi: Yeah. Thought about it, and you’re right. I have nothing to worry about. I’m the one holding the cards.

Shin: As long as ava’s in your control, there’s no way ej dimera can ever bring you down.

Gabi: [Chuckles] I like the way you think.

Shin: I like the way you do everything. I’m gonna go take a shower.

Gabi: Mm-hmm.

[Sighs]

Ej: And this is your room. Best view of the garden in the entire mansion.

Ava: Mmm. Beautiful.

Ej: Mm-hmm. You’re moving in at the perfect time. The hydrangeas are in full bloom. I think you’ll find it very comfortable.

[Tense music]

Ava: This room–

Ej: What about it?

Ava: This is the room that abigail was murdered in, isn’t it?

Ej: It is, yes.

It’s started. Somewhere between a cuddle

Ava: Whoa. You want me to sleep in the bed that abigail was murdered in?

Ej: You don’t strike me as the superstitious type.

Ava: Oh, it’s not superstition. That’s just grim.

Ej: It’s also one of the loveliest rooms in the house. As I said, lovely view.

Ava: Okay, so what’s chad gonna think about me moving in here?

Ej: Chad doesn’t live here anymore. And the staff will help you make it your own. You can remove anything that makes you feel uncomfortable and replace it as per your own tastes. And look at it this way. What are the odds that a second beautiful woman will be killed in here?

Ava: Is that supposed to make me feel better?

Ej: If it’s important for you to feel safe, then yes, it should make you feel better.

Ava: [Scoffs]

[Soft dramatic music]

Shawn: You want us to be partners?

Jada: You know we met like five minutes ago.

Rafe: I know, right? And look how well the two of you are already getting along. Right? Shawn, you’ve been a lone wolf for quite a while now. And I think that you would actually benefit very heavily from working with someone who knows this town so well. So? What do you say?

Shawn: Well, I say yeah, sounds good to me.

Jada: Sounds good.

Rafe: Great. Okay. Then by the power vested in me as commissioner, I hereby pronounce you partner, partner.

Shawn: Partner.

Jada: Partner.

Chloe: Don’t you think it’s a little bit weird? Thank you. Kristen makes this big, dramatic declaration about how we answer to her now? And she’s gonna make my life a living hell then, ever since then, what? Nothing? Have you heard from her?

Brady: Not a word.

Chloe: Yeah, but she made it a point that sticking it to me and worming her way back into your life was the only reason she came back. So why step away?

Brady: It’s a good question. Maybe something more important came up.

Kristen: Why are you being so cryptic about this surgery, rolf? Is there a problem?

Rolf: As I said, his heart is functioning. However, we don’t know how complete his recovery will be until I ween him off the anesthesia and he wakes up.

Kristen: But he will wake up, right?

Rolf: I’m hopeful that will be the case. And soon he’ll be the stefan you remember.

Kristen: Then do it. Wake him up, rolf. Now.

[Machine beeping] My asthma felt anything but normal.

Brady: Maybe kristen has just caught back up in the dimera family drama. I mean, her brother just died.

Chloe: Yeah, but she barely knew jake. Come on.

Brady: True, but every time a dimera family member dies, there’s this power vacuum. There’s this mad scramble. Everybody just needs to obtain the influence and stock that was left behind.

Chloe: So you think she’s trying to take back power at dimera?

Brady: Could be. And even though she wasn’t close with jake, I’ll bet she has some strong feelings about the fact that he was shot in cold blood.

Chloe: Mmm. I don’t know. I feel like the kristen that we know would be too wrapped up in her own obsessions to care about her dead brother.

[Machine beeping]

Kristen: What are you waiting for, rolf? Wake him up.

Rolf: We can’t rush this. I need to give him more time to acclimate before I bring him back to consciousness.

Kristen: He’s been resting for years.

Rolf: Exactly! And when a body has been on ice that long, there are a number of unknowns.

Kristen: What are you saying? That he could be brain damaged?

Rolf: It’s possible. We also don’t know how easily stefan’s body will accept the new organ.

Kristen: You said that he was on anti-rejection medication, right?

Rolf: Of course.

Kristen: You were awfully confident before you performed the procedure. I mean, come on, you said that jake and stefan were identical twins, perfect genetic matches.

Rolf: All of that is true. I’m simply saying we need to let the heart get settled in its new home before we take it out for a walk.

Kristen: Why does it feel like you’re hedging your bets now?

Rolf: All due respect, kristen, 48 hours ago, you didn’t even know stefan was alive. I’m on top of the situation.

Kristen: Are you?

Rolf: Yes! And it doesn’t help to have you pressuring me! Don’t you have other things to do? You’re in charge of basic black, are you not?

Kristen: Yeah, so?

Rolf: And aren’t you trying to get chloe lane out of brady’s life?

Kristen: Ugh! You know what? You’re just suddenly interested in my love life?

Rolf: I’m interested in doing what’s best for the dimera legacy. You focus on what you can control and let me do my job, please.

Kristen: My brother is hanging in the balance here, rolf. So I need to know. Can I trust you?

Rolf: [Scoffs]

[Phone ringing]

Ava: Hello, gabi.

Gabi: Hey. How are the new digs?

Ava: Oh, it’s just swell– if you don’t mind sleeping in a bed where someone was brutally murdered.

Gabi: Ej put you in abigail and chad’s room?

Ava: Mm, yes, he says it’s got a nice view, which is why I’m sure she liked it too.

Gabi: If you don’t enjoy being there, then just move out. Get yourself a room at the salem inn.

Ava: Yeah, I’m trying to put down roots here, gabi. And as ej said, this is jake’s family home, so it’s mine now too.

Gabi: Hmm. Ej said that, didn’t he?

Ava: Mm, yeah. Why?

Gabi: Remember that jake was not your husband and that’s not your family.

Ava: Okay, so, gabi, is this where you start turning the screws again?

Ava: You sounded just a little bit paranoid there.

Gabi: No, I’m just here to remind you that if you stab me in the back, I’m gonna tell ej that your marriage to jake is a fraud. And then you’re gonna end up–

Jada: Well, my father lived here and he told me some good and bad things about the place, but overall he said it was a good community. He was a doctor. Marcus hunter.

Shawn: What? Marcus is your dad?

Jada: You knew him?

Shawn: Yeah, yeah, he was friends with my dad. I used to hang out with him and my uncle steve when I was a kid. I think he was a good man. Sorry he died. Oh, you know what? Actually, I think I have some pictures of us all fishing. Remind me and I’ll show them to you.

Jada: I’d like that. But for now, we should probably get back to work.

Shawn: Ah, yes, yes. Do me a favor and catch me up on where you guys stand on this abigail dimera case.

Jada: Oh.

Shawn: What’s wrong?

Belle: I pulled together all the paperwork you requested as quickly as I could, if you want to take a look.

Ej: Wait. Before we talk business, belle, I’ve been thinking about you a lot since we decided to end things– or rather, you decided to end things. Wondering how you are.

Ej: As usual. And you and shawn?

Belle: Oh, well, in a crazy turn of events, I just learned that jan’s baby isn’t shawn’S. Never was.

Ej: So, has this revelation removed the stumbling blocks between you?

Belle: You mean, are shawn and I getting back together?

Belle: I don’t know.

Belle: If you don’t mind, I’d really just like to get back to business.

Ej: Of course. So have you determined whether or not jake had a will?

Belle: I looked everywhere and I couldn’t find an official record of a will.

Ava: How terrible for you. You must be so disappointed.

[Dramatic music]

Chloe: Ugh, you know, I hate this whole waiting for the other shoe to drop with kristen.

Kristen: You say that, rolf, but I don’t know with you. What if this is a new experiment and you’re using both my brothers as guinea pigs?

Rolf: I admit my research has given me purpose since we lost your father. But believe me, the most important task of my life now and forever is to carry out the wishes of the man I devoted my life to serving.

Kristen: So you’re doing this in stefano’s name?

Rolf: Of course. He would’ve wanted me to save his son and namesake and that’s what I intend to do.

Kristen: And no one will know that stefan is alive until the time is right?

Rolf: I defer to you on that matter.

Kristen: Good. You said that you’ll be waking him up in a few hours?

Rolf: That’s right.

Kristen: All right. I’ll be back, but if anything changes, you let me know.

Rafe: Yeah, maybe because you haven’t been home in weeks.

Gabi: Well, it hasn’t been that long.

Rafe: Uh, yeah, it has. You’ve been shacking up with this shin dude ever since ari left for camp.

Gabi: I–

Shin: I wouldn’t call it shacking up.

Gabi: Rafe, this is li shin. Li, this is my brother, rafe.

Shin: Nice to meet you, commissioner.

Shin: I wish I could spend a little more time getting to know gabi’s brother, but I’m actually on my way out.

Ava: Well, I’m sure that’s what jake would’ve wanted.

Belle: This is a document that formalizes the transfer of jake’s stock to you, his widow.

Gabi: Yeah, I guess you could say that.

Rafe: Uh-huh. So? What’s the story?

Gabi: What story?

Rafe: You and li. Is it serious?

Gabi: I like him and the feeling is definitely mutual.

Rafe: Well, that’s good. So he makes you happy.

Gabi: I mean, we don’t have any expectations. We’re just seeing where this goes.

Rafe: You’re basically living with the guy.

Gabi: I wouldn’t go that far. Well, yes, we’re spending time together. I will admit that.

Rafe: Mm-hmm. Do you love him?

Gabi: Is this a police interrogation? Should I bring my lawyer in?

Alex: Right here.

Maggie: Yes, you are.

Paulina: I’m sorry, honey. Chanel’s gone for the day, and she’s taken her sweet bits with her.

Allie: Okay, it may have taken an extra chapter or two, but henry is asleep.

Chanel: Mm, so does that mean what i think it means?

Allie: It means that we can be together uninterrupted till morning.

Chanel: Mmm, finally.

Xander: [Sighs]

[Knocks at door] Gwen, are you in there?

Sarah: What were you gonna do if she answered?

Xander: Tell her how worried I am that you might be a murderer.

Sarah: Oh, and let her comfort you in that real special way?

Xander: Well, she did say that she was there for me.

[Smack]

Sarah: I’m just glad that she told you where she lives so we can expose her guilty ass.

Xander: That’s what I love about you; you’re always looking on the bright side. Now, let’s hope that my magic fingers haven’t lost their touch.

Sarah: Hurry up!

Gwen: [Sighs] God, i have got to get rid of this thing.

Xander: [Sighs]

Sarah: That was close. Thank god she’s not onto uS.

Xander: But we’re onto her.

Gwen: Now that sarah has an alibi, this thing has to disappear so that no one finds out what I did.

Allie: This is really happening? You really picked me?

Chanel: Yes, I picked you, but don’t put it all on me. We are in this together. You picked me toO.

Allie: Yeah, you’re right, and it’s great. I just– I can’t help thinking about–

Chanel: Johnny?

Allie: Yeah. I just feel so bad. He really thought that he was the one.

Chanel: Yeah, the last thing I wanted to do was hurt him, but someone was gonna get hurt.

Allie: Yeah, I guess so.

Johnny: But you are the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I never stopped loving you.

Chanel: I love yoU. I love both of you, but the person that i want to be with– hopefully for the rest of my life– is allie. Look, I get it. He’s your brother. And I think that it’s sweet that you care about him, but are we really gonna let that ruin our night?

Allie: I can promise you nothing is going to ruin this night.

[Knocks at door]

Chanel: Pretend we’re not here.

Allie: Okay.

[Sighs] I just–I don’t want henry to wake up. Hey, I promise I’ll get rid of whoever it iS.

Johnny: I just can’t believe chanel chose allie.

Paulina: Mm, maybe this will helP.

Johnny: I just want a do-over, you know, another shot. This can’t be how it ends. It just can’t be.

Paulina: I know, sweetiE. It hurts. It wasn’t in the cards.

Johnny: So what? I just give up? I mean, you told me yourself you wanted me to end up with chanel. Did you mean that, or were you just saying it to make me feel better?

Paulina: Of course I meant it. The only issues I’ve ever had with you is when the devil himself was making your choices for you. I sincerely believe you can make chanel very, very happy.

Johnny: Let’s do something about it then.

Paulina: Say that again?

Johnny: You want me with chanel, I want me with chanel. Let’s figure out a way to make that happen.

Maggie: I’m sorry I barged in on you like that.

Alex: It’s all right, auntiE. You can turn around noW.

Maggie: But you just got back to town. I didn’t realize you had enough time to…make new friends.

Alex: I’m a people person. This is laura.

Lisa: Lisa. Those sheets are amazing, mrs. KiriakiS. What’s the thread count? Like, a thousand or something?

Maggie: Oh, um, they’re egyptian cotton.

Maggie: But really low standards. You called her by the wrong name, and she wants to see you again?

Alex: Auntie, what can I say? I’m good at what I do.

Maggie: Okay. Okay, I’m gonna go, and you finish dressing.

Alex: All right.

Maggie: Oh! I thought–

Allie: What are you doing here? I thought–

Lucas: You thought I was in jail?

Allie: Something like that.

Lucas: They didn’t have enough evidence to hold me in connection to abigail’s murder, so I’m out on bail.

Allie: Hmm, out on bail?

Lucas: Yeah.

Allie: What about kidnapping my mother? That’s still a crime, isn’t it? I guess just not a serious one. I mean, why should you have to spend another night in jail? All you did was lock away another human for three months.

Chanel: Hey, let your dad in.

Allie: No. No, it’s our night.

Lucas: I’m sorry, chanel.

Chanel: Look, i will go back to the bakery.

Allie: No, it’s closeD. We closed it.

Chanel: Okay, well, I’ll open it back up.

Allie: Why, so I can hold my dad’s hand and make him feel better?

Chanel: No, so that you can talk to him and make yourself feel betteR. Look, maybe it’s just me, my experience, but don’t take the fact that you actually have a dad for granted. I know you’re not gonna work it all out tonight, but you have to start somewhere, okay?

Allie: Not tonight’S. It’s our night.

Chanel: Hey, we will have a million more. Okay.

Allie: Bye.

Chanel: Good night, mr. Horton.

Lucas: Night. It’s up to you. I’ll go if you want me to. It’s your call.

Paulina: Your sister, allie, is with chanel now. It’s done.

Johnny: But not set in stone. Chanel just needs to see she made the wrong decision, and that’s where you come in.

Paulina: Me? Please! What am I supposed to do about it?

Johnny: Oh, you know you have influence over her.

Paulina: Mm, not when she sets her mind to something. If I try to change her mind about allie, I will lose whatever influence I do have over her.

Johnny: I know you can’t just go to her and say she made the wrong decision, even though she did. That’s why we need a plan.

Paulina: “We” need a plan?

Johnny: For chanel’s sake.

Paulina: Oh, yeah. Oh, that’s right, that’s right. This has nothing to do with you. Yeah. And, you know, another thing, I don’t like that word “plan.” It sounds underhanded, manipulative.

Johnny: But it’s not about the routE. It’s about the destination. Will you just help me get there, paulina? Let me make chanel truly happy.

Victor: What is this? A fraternity house?

Maggie: He brought a woman home, victor. It’s no big deal.

Victor: He snuck a woman into his room, and then he had his way with heR. Where’s the sense of decency?

Maggie: You know, I always think it’s kind of hilarious when you attempt moral outrage.

Alex: Well, not everyone is as accepting as you are, aunt meg.

Maggie: Oh, hello.

Alex: Hi. I mean, you accept him.

Victor: You’re not funnY.

Maggie: Well, he kind of is, but I’m gonna go and check with cook about dinner. I always feel like maggie smith when I say that!

Victor: You remind me of your father at your age.

Alex: Really?

Victor: It’s not a compliment. Sit down.

Alex: Since you asked so nicely.

Victor: I have a question. The hell are you doing with your life?

Sarah: So even though gwen didn’t see us, she did take off the mask, which is the only proof that she was the one that lucas saw at the dimera mansion the night abigail was murdered.

Xander: And now we have to make sure she doesn’t have a chance to get rid of it. Come oN.

Gwen: [Exhales sharply] Well, we did have a few laughs, didn’t we?

[Sucks teeth] But alas, all good things must come to an end, so goodbye.

Gwen: [Sighs] Why didn’t I just do that that night?

[Sighs]

[Knocks at door] Who is it?

Leo: [Mumbles indistinctly]

Gwen: Who is it?

Xander: Gwen came this way.

Sarah: And came back empty-handed.

Xander: Well, that dumpster. That’s the only place she could have ditched it. We get it out of here, and your troubles are over.

Sarah: And hers get a lot worsE.

Xander: Oh, my god, this must be where putrid came to die! Oh, I don’t see it in there.

Sarah: Somebody must have put another load on top. We’re gonna have to get in there and dig it out.

Xander: Get in there?

Sarah: Yeah, but that’s where the mask is.

Xander: Yeah, but can’t we get, like, a pole or some gas masks or something?

Sarah: Baby. I’ll do it.

Xander: Oh, no, no, no, no! Don’t, don’t, don’t!

Sarah: Whoo! You know, you could have given me a boost.

Paulina: We can’t hurt allie. That’s key.

Johnny: So can I take that as a yes?

Paulina: [Sighs] Ooh, this is against my better judgment.

Johnny: Look, for the record, I don’t want allie to get hurt either.

Paulina: Well, doesn’t that seem inevitable?

Johnny: Yeah, maybe in the short term, but really, we’re just freeing her up to meet the true love of her life, like I know chanel is for me.

Paulina: Oh, it is so touching how you care about otherS.

Johnny: Okay, so we need to figure out a way to get chanel away from allie in a way that’S…permanent.

Paulina: Amen to that. I can’t listen to one more “which twin do I want to be with” monologue.

Johnny: I was thinking maybe a misunderstanding is the best way to go, you know, set something up so chanel ends up feeling betrayed. And there’s nothing allie can say or do to make it betteR.

Paulina: But that seems complicateD.

Johnny: Okay. Pitch me a better idea.

Paulina: Okay, better idea– let’s not do anything at all.

Chanel: Why, hello, you two.

Paulina: Oh, chanel, what are you doing here, sneaking up on me like that?

Chanel: Oh, sorry. What were you two talking about? You were as thick as thieves.

Paulina: I was just giving johnny a shoulder to cry on.

Chanel: Aw, how sweet. Kind of a tell-mama moment?

Paulina: Now, chanel, don’t be mean. Heartbreak is tough.

Chanel: Right, especially when you’re planning to inflict it on someone else, like allie.

Johnny: What?

Paulina: Now, chanel, I think you misheard.

Johnny: Yeah.

Chanel: “Something we can set up so that chanel ends up feeling betrayed. And there’s nothing allie can do or say to make it better”? I’m sorry. What part of that did I mishear? Now, I half-expect something like that from you, but you? You’re supposed to have my back, not be plotting against me. I hate both of you.

Paulina: Oh, chanel. Now, wait. No, let me explain. Chanel. Oh. Oh, my god. What have I done?

Lucas: Listen, ever since the night of the wedding, things have been kind of complicated. I don’t understand what I did, and I can’t stand to think about what it’s been like for you.

Allie: It’s kind of a pattern, isn’t it? You think about me after you’ve already done what you know is wrong.

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah, you’re right.

Allie: But afterwards, you always feel so sorry.

Lucas: I am sorry, but I’m not here to ask for your forgivenesS. I’m here to tell you something that I think might be able to help you.

Allie: Oh, you didn’t kidnap my mother?

Lucas: No, I did that, but listen to me. Your grandma, marlena, she put me under hypnosis, and I started to remember a lot of things from that night. And the point is, is I didn’t kill abigail. I am not a murderer. I mean, I did go there that night. I went to the dimera mansion because I wanted to confront abigail. I wanted to beg her not to tell your mom that I was the one who kidnapped her, but I never saw abigail that night.

Allie: And that cut on your hand?

Lucas: I did this myself.

Allie: Mm, how?

Lucas: There was a bar in the dimera living rooM. And I wanted to make myself another drink, so I sliced my hand cutting a lemon.

Allie: “Cutting a lemon”? You were blind drunk. You had your back up against a wall. You snuck into the dimera mansion, and what? You made yourself a singapore sling? You couldn’t just take a swig out of the bottle like every other drunk in the world?

Lucas: Listen to me. I didn’t understand what I was doing. I had no idea, but I did see sarah there. I saw sarah running down the steps. She was headed for the door. She dropped somethinG. She picked it up. And then, she left. And the police think that might be the murder weapon.

Allie: Sarah? You saw sarah?

Lucas: Yes, I did. And I know it doesn’t make sense right now, but the point is, is I didn’t kill abigail. You believe that, don’t you? Please just tell me you believe that.

Xander: Sarah, get out of there. You’re gonna make yourself sick. I’m gonna be sicK.

Sarah: Someone had to take charge; this mask isn’t gonna find itself.

Xander: I know we have to find the mask, but there has to be a better way than this. Like, we can, like, tip it over, spill everything out, go through it with tongs. Sarah, get out of there. Sarah, please don’t make me come in there after you.

Sarah: Son of a bitch! The mask isn’t in here. Where the hell is it?

Leo: Does this lovely room of yours come with plates and flatware? Eating off those plastic utensils they give you? So déclassé.

Gwen: Leo, can you please– can you just go, please? I’m really not on the mood for company tonight.

Leo: I’m not company. I’m family. You and I are gonna break bread while you fill me in on the news.

Gwen: What news?

Leo: About saraH. Surely, the noose is tightening around her neck even as we speak. You wouldn’t happen to have a crisp chablis on ice, would you?

Gwen: I have a half pint of vodka, and it’s all minE.

Leo: Oh, gwen. You look like crap. What’s wrong?

Gwen: Nothing.

Leo: Liar. You’re gonna fill me in over some chowder, biscuits, salad. And for dessert, I’m back!

Gwen: Oh, that old thing. What are you gonna do with that?

Leo: What do you think? Marry xander and enjoy the honeymoon.

Gwen: Oh, oH. You’re hilarious.

Leo: I am going to have to have it hollanderized, though. I found it in a dumpster. It is stinky.

Gwen: Oh, my darlinG. Don’t you know you’re not gonna find mr. Right dumpster-diving?

Leo: [Chuckles] Wanna drop the act now? I saw you in the alley, darling. Can you spell “panicked”?

Gwen: I wasn’t panicked. I was just tidying up.

Leo: Oh, save it, s’il vous plait. That won’t wash. You’ve had this thing forever, and suddenly, it’s mask-a non grata? Hmm, well, last time we were together, xander was so down in the dumps about what was going to happen to sarah, like she was gonna be dragged off to the guillotine at any given moment. And yet, somehow she’s still free. Something about an alibi contradicting the entirely liquid lucas horton’s eyewitness account? Just who did he see that night rushing down those stairs?

Xander: Must still be in there. I mean, maybe you missed it. If you want something done right, you have to do it… yourself.

Victor: So sonny tells me you’d like to work with him at titan.

Alex: It came uP. Turns out that working for vic and joe wasn’t everything I hoped it would be.

Victor: Why? Did they actually expect you to work?

[Chuckles] So what do you see yourself doing at titan?

Alex: Shouldn’t sonny be sitting in on this conversation?

Victor: Oh, then he’d know what we were actually talking about. Do you really want sonny to know why you’re actually here?

Alex: Should have known i couldn’t put anything past you.

Lucas: Allie, please just say something.

Allie: I think I always knew that you couldn’t kill someone.

Lucas: Thank you.

Allie: But I don’t believe sarah could either.

Lucas: Me neither, to tell you the truth.

Allie: I think you should stay away from the phrase “to tell you the truth.” So how about I tell you the truth? Okay. I don’t believe that you killed abigail, but I will never forget–forgive–that you were the one who kidnapped my mom, that you hired men to keep her locked up against her will for monthS. And now, you’re in court, trying to get out of it like a coward. I think it’s pathetic.

Paulina: Chanel, honey, wait.

Chanel: Give me one good reason whY.

Paulina: Well, just let me explain.

Chanel: You don’t have to explain. It’s crystal clear. You don’t want me to be with allie. Well, I made my choice. I want to see what allie and i can be togetheR. And as my mother, I thought you would be happy for me, but instead, you’re plotting with johnny behind my back?

Paulina: I wasn’t really–

Chanel: I heard you! You thought he was right and I was wronG.

Paulina: No, I was just worried that you hadn’t made the right choice.

Chanel: Right. I hadn’t made the right choice. I picked the girl, and according to you, the right choice means picking the boy. That’s what this is really all about.

Alex: I guess maybe it did cross my mind that working for sonny would be less taxing than working for vic and joe.

Victor: Oh, bull. Something a lot more devious than that crossed your mind.

Alex: [Scoffs] Come on, unc. I was joking before. You can’t possibly think that i’m after sonny’s job. I know you want him there.

Victor: I put him there. And it was the right decision at the time, but as it turns out, he’s got too much of his mother in him.

Alex: Adrienne was a mother to me too.

Victor: Oh, come on. Don’t get huffy on mE. She’s fine, she’s great, she’s a saint, but she has no killer instinct and neither does sonny.

Alex: So you’re obviously upset about the acquisition sonny was attempting to make– a small company operating out of london.

Victor: Which he let slip right through his fingers.

Alex: And assumed that gabi hernandez had swooped in and took it out from under him.

Victor: Which she denies, and he believed her.

Alex: Even though she’s apparently a scheming liar with zero scruples.

Victor: Would you have believed her?

Alex: It’s hard to say.

Victor: You’re trying to protect sonny, aren’t you?

Alex: He is my brotheR.

Victor: Or maybe you’re trying to protect yourself.

Alex: Excuse me?

Victor: I did a little digging. Wasn’t gabi that swooped down and grabbed up that company. It was you.

Lucas: I mean, I don’t wanna throw my mother under the bus, but she did kind of insist that i plead not guiltY.

Allie: Yeah, she gave me the same spiel.

Lucas: Right, so then you know. You know my plea was based around what happened to abigail. And my memory lapse made it really easy for the police to assume that I killed her, so if I plead guilty to kidnapping your mother, they’re gonna think that I killed abigail too, you know, to keep her quiet.

Allie: I get it. Yeah, I went to that wedding thinking it was going to be one of the greatest days ever. You know, my mom and dad getting back together, it was like a dream come true.

Lucas: I know. I turned it into a real nightmare, didn’t I?

Allie: It’s more than that. That day, my eyes were finally opened about who you really are.

Paulina: You think you understand, but you don’T. I think you’re better off with johnny, not because he’s the boy but because, well, except for when he was possessed, he never hurt you, and allie has. She was all over the map with her feelings for you and tripp, and that hurt you. I saw it.

Chanel: But she wasn’t ready to face how she felt about me then. Now, she has.

Paulina: Well, okay, but she still–she got a lot of baggage, like with that little boy.

Chanel: Nice try, mama, but henry isn’t baggagE. This is about me making a choice that you’re not comfortable with. You want me in a nice, traditional relationship, whatever that is.

Paulina: Oh, you’re wrong. Now, you know I’m open-minded, that i think love is love. Now, chanel, now look at our skin. Don’t we have it already hard enough in this country? You’re making a choice that’s going to even make it harder for you.

Chanel: You wanna know how I know you’re lying? Because it’s one excuse after another. You would never run away from a choice you felt deep in your heart, and you would hate it if I did. Just tell me the truth. Please.

Xander: Oh! Oh, I can’t believe this!

Sarah: I told you.

Xander: [Exhales sharply] I’m not giving up. We may not have the mask, but we know that gwen must have been there the night of the murder, at the mansion.

Sarah: Yeah, but we don’t have the proof.

Xander: We just have to go to the cops and tell them what we know.

Sarah: There’s only one problem.

Xander: What problem?

Sarah: Gwen.

Gwen: This is ridiculous.

Leo: Gwen. Gwennie. GuineverE. I know you too well, and I saw the panic in your eyes when i pulled the mask out of the bag. And we both know this is about more than just the mask.

Gwen: I’m getting the vodka.

Leo: For starters, you have a wretched excess of motive. And two, we already discussed the missing hours at statesville. Even if the guard can’t remember which night it was, we both know the disappearing act spells opportunity. And finally, thiS. This means means! The case against you is more obvious than rock hudson. Look, I am your friend. You know thaT. So tell your friend what happened that night.

Victor: So you were right about one thing– you can’t put anything past me.

Alex: Point taken. Lesson learned. So full disclosure, I knew sonny was out to buy that company, so I formed an llc to hide behind and i bought the company out for a lesser price than what sonny was going to paY.

Victor: So then you moved here. So you are after sonny’s job?

Alex: No, I was trying to help him out.

Victor: Oh, well, this I’ve gotta hear.

Alex: Unc, I swear to god. I caught wind of what sonny was trying to do with that company. I knew about the company myselF. I knew about its financials. So i heard enough of sonny’s proposal to realize he was about to be taken, so I bought it outright myself. I saved him from falling into a trap.

Victor: There’s a far, far better thing you did.

Alex: I have no interest in that company. My long-term plan was to flip it back to titan at the original terms that sonny should have been able to get from the very beginning. I was only trying to help.

Victor: Well, it sounds like you thought of everything.

Alex: I try.

Paulina: You’re right. You’re right. I wanted you with a boY. I was being selfisH. I told myself I was thinking of you, but truth is, I was trying to make you fulfill my dream. I wanted every cliché in the book for yoU.

Chanel: No, for you.

Paulina: For me. The wedding, the handsome groom, putting the ring on the finger, and babies–lots of them. It was everything but the picket fence. It’s too much to give up.

Chanel: You don’t understanD. I want all those things too. You’re just hanging onto an old-fashioned idea of what marriage has to be. I can have all of those things with allie. She’s my princess charming. And I want you in my corner, mama. I want all the things you want for me, but I need you to help me with it all, not fight me. Right now, allie, she’s with her dad. And she may be on the verge of losing him–i don’t know– but I do know that I don’t wanna lose my mother.

Paulina: Oh, baby. No, no, you won’T. You won’T. You won’t, I promise. I promise you, you won’T. You won’T. Come here, baby.

Xander: I don’t see a problem. I mean, if we go to the cops and explain that there’s a possibility that gwen was at the mansion that night disguised as you–

Sarah: Yeah, and maybe they’ll buy that logic, but then what? They have motive, but no mask means no means. And her being locked up in statesville that night means no opportunity. All that’s gonna do is let gwen know that we’re onto her. Right now, she thinks that that mask is gone for good, and we have to keep it that way if we’re gonna nail heR.

Leo: So I ask what happened that night, and all I get is a pout?

Gwen: I’m not pouting.

Leo: You’re not talking either.

Gwen: Because there’s nothing to say, nothing to tell.

Leo: Fine. My mistake. I’ll just take this lovely mask back to where I found it and pretend I never saw it.

Gwen: Actually, I would prefer if you would just let me handle it on my own. Thank you; no offense.

Gwen: Mm, lovely seeing you.

Xander: I don’t think I’ve ever needed a wash the way I needed that one, and I am eternally sorry for making you jump in that dumpster first.

Gwen: [Giggles] You more than made up for it in the shower. So tomorrow, we go to statesville.

Xander: Yeah, and get proof that gwen got out the night abigail was murdered. Don’t worry, sarah. We’re gonna get you through this together. Gwen will never see us coming.

Alex: Uncle victor, I do not want sonny to know about this.

Victor: Oh, I’m sure you don’T. Imagine what would happen if I told him what you were actually doing here.

Alex: Imagine what it would do to him.

Victor: Imagine what it would do to you. No one in this family would ever trust you again.

Victor: One other thing. It occurred to me that this little arrangement could be what you wanted from the very beginning.

Johnny: Please tell me you were able to talk her down. We can still salvage thiS. I know we can. Look, just because chanel heard us doesn’t mean it can’t still work.

Paulina: It’s not going to work, johnny, because we’re not going to do it.

Paulina: No! I said I want her to be happy, and that means being with allie.

Abe: Ooh, now, are you trying to get me drunk so you can have your way with me?

Paulina: Abraham! That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.

Abe: [Chuckles]

[Phone buzzes]

Chad: What do you want, sarah? “Sorry I killed your wife”? Not in the mood. Hey, schmitty! Let me get another one of these, please.

Eric: Hey, chad. Don’t you already think you’ve had enough?

Sarah: Hey, chad, it’s sarah. I know you don’t want to talk to me, but can you please call me back? It’s important.

[Phone beeps]

Sonny: Sarah.

Sarah: Hey, sonny.

Sonny: What a surprise.

Sarah: [Chuckles] Yeah, I was just coming to tell my mom some good news.

Sonny: Oh, it’s been a while since I’ve heard any good news. So what is it?

Sarah: You know how they talk on crime shows? “There’s been a break in the case.”

Rafe: This is nicole’s statement. I took her at home this morning.

Jada: Thanks. How’s she doing?

Rafe: She’s doing a lot better. Pain’s better anyway, but the crutches are driving her nuts. They slow her down. She does not like to be slowed down.

Jada: Hmm.

Rafe: Abigail’s file?

Jada: Yeah, I’m going through it once last time. I think we’re pretty close to closing the case.

Xander: Like hell you are!

Rafe: Take it easy, cook.

Xander: Get her to stop harassing sarah.

Jada: I’m not harassing her, I’m just doing my job!

Xander: Because she’s innocent. And we can prove it.

Jack: I can prove all editorial decisions through email. I–I understand, I do. Listen, the bottom line is that I–

[Knock at door] I am not leaving salem until I find out who killed my daughter.

[Dramatic music]

Jack: It’s all right. Jennifer and julie took the kids out for pizza.

Gwen: That place that has the window looking into the kitchen, where the children can watch them making the pizza? I love that. Gosh, I remember thomas used to knock on the glass–

Gwen: I’m here because there’s something I want you to know.

Sonny: So rex can vouch for your whereabouts at the time of the murder?

Sarah: Yeah. Yeah, he came to see me at the inn and he stayed there until I fell asleep.

Sonny: That’s great!

[Chuckles] Um… and also, you know, maggie’s been really worried about you.

Sarah: No, I know.

Sonny: And for what it’s worth… I never thought you did it. Okay? No matter what kind of drugs gwen pumped into you, it’s not in your nature to hurt anyone. Especially not abigail.

Sarah: Thank you. You know, there were times, though, when I couldn’t remember everything that happened that night and I just kept thinking like, what if the drugs made me–

Sonny: Hey. You don’t have to think about that anymore. Okay? Rex will testify and you can just put this whole thing behind you.

Sarah: Yeah, I mean, I don’t know, you know? Rex can tell them that he was there, but it doesn’t mean the police have to believe him.

Jada: What do you mean you can prove it?

Rafe: Yeah, what are you talking about now?

Xander: I’m talking about the fact that– sarah couldn’t have killed abigail. So you need to get this woman to back off or we’re gonna charge her with harassment.

Jada: Questioning your suspect is not harassment!

Xander: Sarah isn’t a suspect. And if you’d been doing your job instead of trying to railroad her, you would’ve found out she has an alibi.

Jada: How? She doesn’t remember where she was that night!

Xander: No, but her ex-husband can. Marlena hypnotized sarah and she remembered that she was with rex. And he can and will confirm it. So take one of your little pens here and cross sarah off your list of suspects.

Jada: Sorry, I can’t do that.

Xander: Why the hell not?

Chad: Where did schmitty go?

Eric: Smitty’s off. You’re done.

Chad: I would like another drink.

Eric: I saw your tab and it looks like you’ve already had enough.

Chad: Yeah. I am going to have quite a few more. As my son so eloquent– eloq– as my son says, you are not the boss of me.

Eric: I kind of am. I’m legally bound to refuse service to anyone who’s obviously over their limit.

Chad: Are you having a good time, father?

Eric: I know you’re not.

Chad: You know the problem with priests? Sorry. Ex-priests. Is that you think you’re god on earth.

Eric: You know what I think? I think you’re hurting.

Chad: [Chuckles] Wow. Such insight. Such compassion. The man whose wife was stabbed to death by her hopped-up cousin is hurting. You should have a talk show.

Eric: I’m calling you a cab.

Chad: No, you are gonna get me the drink that I ordered. And I’m not leaving until I get it. This is the sound of better breathing.

Xander: Didn’t you hear me? Sarah’s not a suspect anymore. She has an alibi.

Jada: Right, an alibi. A colleague of dr. Horton hypnotizes her and then…

[Snaps fingers] Her memory comes back? And who confirms it? Oh, wait for it. Her ex-husband.

Rafe: Dial it down.

Jada: Tell him to dial it down. Here’s the one that charged in here claiming that I’m harassing sarah horton? Railroading her?

Xander: You blew up her wedding!

Jada: And now he’s ordering me to stop the investigation because he’s come up with some out-of-the-blue alibi?

Xander: You just listen to me.

Jada: No, you listen to me. Lucas horton swears he saw sarah horton at the scene of the crime on the night of the crime.

Xander: You know as well as I do that lucas horton is a drunk and a liar. He’s only pointing his finger at sarah to save his own skin.

Jada: [Sighs] Did you know mr. Horton was also hypnotized by your very own dr. Evans? Mm-hmm. And he remembers being at the dimera mansion that night and he saw sarah walking down the stairs.

Xander: So he’s faking it. He was just pretending to be hypnotized.

Jada: So he fooled dr. Evans? Is it also possible that perhaps she was also fooled by dr. Horton?

Xander: Maybe, but sarah has an alibi. Rex brady was in my room at the salem inn with her on the night of the murder.

Jada: Oh. Does he have a habit of visiting his ex-wife alone in a hotel room?

Xander: Well, he never really got over her, really.

Jada: Oh, he never really got over her, did he? And now he’s covering for her murder charge. Hmm. It’s always nice when a divorce is amicable.

Xander: He wouldn’t lie about something like this. You know he wouldn’T.

Jada: Mr. Cook, I admit this is a troublesome case and I’ve had my fair share of he said-she said, but this is my first he remembered-she remembered.

Xander: This isn’t funny, damn it.

Rafe: Xander, listen. We will follow up on everything you’ve told us and we will talk to rex.

Jada: But your fiancée is not yet off the hook.

Xander: You know what? You’re idiots. You’re both idiots.

Jada: [Sighs]

Rafe: Well, you told him. Everything you know about the case.

Jada: [Sighs] I’M…sorry.

Rafe: Might wanna work on that.

[Phone ringing] I’m sorry. Um, I gotta take this. Hello?

Eric: Hey, sonny, it’s eric brady.

Sonny: Oh, hey, eric. What’s up?

Eric: Hey, I’m sorry to bother you, I just didn’t know who else to call. It’s about chad. By the looks of it, he’s been drinking all afternoon down here at the brady pub and, listen, I refused to serve him another drink but now he won’t leave. And I have an appointment to make, so–

Sonny: Yeah, okay, I’ll be right there.

Eric: Good. I was hoping you’d say that. Thanks.

Abe: Now, haven’t you noticed that you don’t have to get me lubricated to succumb to your charms?

Paulina: Mm, well, it’s true, I am a goddess and you are helpless before me. [Chuckles] Unless…

Abe: Unless what?

Paulina: Well, I’ll be honest. When it comes to your career, you can be downright stubborn.

Abe: Because it’s my career.

Paulina: And it’s been very nice so far, but you are not poised to take off to reach for the stars.

Abe: To do what you want me to do.

Paulina: This isn’t about me. It isn’t even about you, it’s for the people of this state.

Abe: Oh, I know how you worry about them.

Paulina: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. And do you know how many state governors went on to be president?

Abe: Almost as many that went to jail.

Paulina: That’s why we need an honest man like you. I can’t believe. Oh, governor mitchell, he pardoned those killers. Mm, he’s proven himself unfit for the office.

Abe: Then why did you want me to grovel for his endorsement?

Paulina: This–this is my point. If I as so much as bring up the topic of your political career, you get oppositional. Just like a two-year-old.

Abe: Oh, well–hey! Hey, nicole. Over here.

Paulina: Uh-uh, uh-uh. I know what you’re doing.

Abe: I’m just greeting an old friend.

[All chuckling] So.

Abe: We were trying to. I just thank god eric came along when he did. It sounds like he saved your life.

Nicole: I think so. I mean, I thought that guy was gonna shoot me. And somehow eric talked him down.

Paulina: Well, that’s so romantic! Oh, so tell me when are the two of you getting back together?

Abe: Paulina.

Nicole: [Chuckles]

[Phone ringing]

Eric: Detective hunter?

Jada: Hi, eric. Thanks for coming in. It shouldn’t take long, I just need to ask a few questions about the other night.

Eric: Of course, not a problem. First of all, I just– how are you are doing? Since I saw you last at the hospital?

Jada: Better. Thanks for asking.

Eric: Yeah. That’s good. But I think everybody would understand if you weren’t better.

Jada: Yeah, I mean, it was a clean shoot, but I still killed a man with a soul. It stays with you.

Eric: Of course it does.

Jada: [Sighs] I mean, I– with you being a priest and everything, I’m sure you’ve dealt with a lot of people and people who dealt with guilt and a lot of difficult emotions. I feel like you would understand.

Eric: Yeah, I do. Hey, if you ever need to talk about it, you know I’m here, okay?

Jada: Thanks. Let me get that file. Oh, just had it here somewhere. Oh, damn it, damn it, damn it! Ugh. [Sighs] I am not in a good mood.

Eric: Really? [Chuckles] Hey, you know, on my way over here, I saw xander cook leaving the office. He wouldn’t have anything to do with your mood, would he?

Jada: Oh, no. I just love hyper-aggressive overbearing alpha males who shove pens in your face and call you an idiot and you end up getting in trouble by your boss. I mean, the man’s a total jerk! He’s not your friend, is he?

Eric: Definitely not my friend.

Jada: [Laughs] Okay. That seems kind of out of character for you, but what did he do?

Eric: Well, for starters, he slept with my wife.

[Phone chiming]

Xander: Those bloody cops! No, that bloody cop I tell you what. She’s got her mind all made up and no pesky facts are gonna change it.

Sarah: I take it it didn’t go very well.

Xander: That’d be an understatement.

Sarah: Maybe you should’ve called the lawyer.

Xander: I thought I could handle it.

Sarah: You usually do.

Xander: Well, listen to this. When I told rafe that rex could confirm your alibi, that hunter woman, she was all over the fact that he’s your ex-husband.

Sarah: He is my ex-husband. What’s wrong with that?

Xander: I might’ve let slip that he never got over you and she took that to mean that, you know, he might lie for you.

Sarah: Well, that’s not good. That’s not as bad as lucas’ testimony, but that’s not good.

Xander: Lucas is a lying drunk.

Sarah: I don’t think you can lie under hypnosis. I wasn’T. And I know that I was here when lucas said that he saw me there.

Xander: But he didn’t see you. You couldn’t be in two places at once.

Sarah: Except I was before, wasn’t I? Remember?

Gwen: I saw jenn leave with the kids. You should know I didn’t want to just turn up here. I know jennifer’s already going through enough to have to deal with finding me on her doorstep.

Jack: What did you want to tell me?

Gwen: I wanted to tell you that the pardon was not my idea. It was kristen who got me out, who intervened. Now, I’m not going to pretend like I’m not happy about it, but I didn’t scheme to get it. I was absolutely prepared to serve my sentence.

Jack: Except you didn’t have any choice in that, did you?

Gwen: I mean, I understand that I deserved it and that I need to pay for what I had done.

Jack: I appreciate you saying that. I have to admit, when I heard you’d been pardoned, I didn’t know what to think. But hearing you now… I understand that you truly wanted– you truly want to atone for what you did to sarah. And to abigail.

Chad: Where the hell are you, ewwic?

[Laughs]

[Inhales deeply and sighs] Okay, fine, I’m gonna get it myself then!

Sonny: Chad!

Chad: [Laughs] Uh-oh. Did eric call you?

Sonny: Look, he said you needed a ride home and clearly, he was right.

Chad: Nope, I just need another drink.

Sonny: Okay, chad, chad, no one is going to–stand up. Hey, look at me. Look at me. Hey. No one is going to serve you. All right?

Chad: Well, then I’m just gonna go find another bar.

Sonny: I’m telling you, I think it’s time to call it a day.

Chad: [Chuckles] Wanna wrestle?

Sonny: No, I don’t want to wrestle.

Chad: Move.

Sonny: Chad.

Chad: Move.

[Chad laughing] Ow! My asthma felt anything but normal.

[Light music]

Jack: What can i do for you, rafe?

Rafe: I came to update you on abigail’s case. Oh, gwen.

Gwen: Commissioner.

Rafe: That’s right. I did hear that you were pardoned. I guess congratulations are in order.

Jack: That was kristen’s doing, not gwen’S.

Rafe: Oh.

Jack: So, what did you learn about abigail’s case? Please, tell me.

Rafe: Yeah, right. Well, turns out that sarah horton may in fact have an alibi for the time of the murder. She remembers being with rex brady at the salem inn and word is he’s willing to confirm it.

Jack: Well, thank god. Especially for maggie’s sake.

Gwen: What about what lucas said? Didn’t he say that he saw sarah at the dimera mansion the night that she was murdered?

Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, that is still a question mark. So, obviously until we speak to rex, sarah’s not going to be completely cleared.

Jack: But once you’ve confirmed that rex is telling the truth?

Rafe: Well, then we’re going to have to look at lucas’ statement a hell of a lot harder. After all, sarah can’t be two places at the same time.

Sarah: You remember when I came to you and told you that I couldn’t marry you and that I was going away and didn’t want you looking for me?

Xander: That wasn’t you.

Sarah: I know. It was kristen. I think I was in a suitcase at that point, but it certainly seemed like I was somewhere that I wasn’T. You would’ve even sworn to it.

Xander: The mask.

Sarah: The mask. The mask that kristen loaned gwen. “The part of sarah horton usually played by kristen dimera will tonight be played by gwen rizczech.” For all I know, she still has that mask.

Xander: That bitch.

Sarah: That bitch. We’ve seen the lengths that she’ll go to get rid of me. And she’s the only person that I know that flat-out hated abigail.

Xander: She was wearing the mask that night.

Sarah: And killed two birds with one stone.

Jada: He slept with your wife?

Eric: Now my ex-wife.

Jada: That would be nicole, the commissioner’s wife?

Eric: [Sighs softly]

Jada: So xander sleeping with her, that’s why you got divorced?

Eric: [Sighs] Well, that was the catalyst.

Jada: Mm.

Eric: But the truth is, I wasn’t much of a husband. I was out of the country most of the time and I was just focused on my work and– listen, to be honest, I really wasn’t paying attention to my marriage. Or nicole.

Paulina: It’s like a romance novel! Our hero saves the heroine’s life and all their problems melt away like april snow.

Abe: [Chuckles] Paulina.

Paulina: Oh, you know. I know chemistry. I could sense the chemistry between you two at our wedding. If chanel hadn’t caught that bouquet, ah, I know you and your ex would’ve been the next ones married.

Nicole: Yes, well, I was.

Paulina: Huh?

Abe: You see, nicole is married. To rafe hernandez.

Paulina: Oh! Honey! You should’ve talked to me first. Oh.

Jada: But the two of you are still on good terms?

Eric: Uh, yes. I only wish her the best.

Jada: More than that. You risked your life for her.

Eric: Well, when I saw the guy holding a gun on her… I knew at that moment that he could pull the trigger any minute. I just realized that–

Jada: You were still in love with her.

Eric: What I realized in that moment… is that I wouldn’t want to live on this earth without her in it.

Jada: Well, thanks to your quick thinking, you don’t have to.

Eric: I don’t know about that. You know, I kind of think I am the reason why it happened.

Jada: Say what?

Eric: Well, that morning, the guy, when I saw him stealing tips out of the jar, I should’ve called the cops.

Jada: Aren’t you being a little hard on yourself?

Eric: Am I? I mean, if I had done something, nicole, she wouldn’t have had a gun pointed at her. And if I hadn’t let the guy get away, jake wouldn’t be dead.

Jada: You can’t think like that.

Eric: Yeah, well, it’s all I’ve been thinking about.

Jada: Look, I know all about going over and over things in your head. But the only person responsible for what that man did is that man. Not me, not nicole, and not you. So don’t blame yourself for what happened.

Eric: Thanks.

Jada: So let’s get that statement.

Paulina: So you were hanging out at our wedding on your wedding day?

Nicole: Well, it was sort of a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Paulina: Mm, oh. Well, congratulations.

[Phone ringing] Oh. Oh, it’s the exploratory committee.

Abe: Exploratory committee?

Paulina: Mm-hmm. I had them set up some focus groups, see how the average joe responds to the name abe carver.

[Chuckles]

[Phone ringing]

[Sighs]

Abe: [Chuckles] You know, we were hoping that our marriage would bring her out of her shell.

Nicole: Uh-huh. Must be really hard to pry an opinion out of her.

Abe: Ah.

Nicole: It’s okay. I mean, she’s not the only one that thinks that way about me and eric. Even rafe thinks something’s going on.

Abe: Rafe?

Nicole: It’s just– after eric scared off that guy with the gun, he was trying to talk me down and rafe showed up and rafe misread things and he freaked out on eric.

Abe: Wow.

Nicole: But once rafe realized what was happening, you know, he felt bad. But I just–rafe doesn’t have anything to worry about.

Abe: Are you sure?

Jack: Well, if rex really was with sarah that night, then lucas saying that he saw sarah at the dimera mansion doesn’t make any sense. Again, lucas was drinking. Maybe he doesn’t know what he saw.

Rafe: Yeah, that’s a distinct possibility.

[Soft tense music]

Gwen: Well, that’s good to know that sarah probably didn’t have anything to do with abigail’s murder. I would hate to have to live with the responsibility for my sister’s death.

Sonny: Chad. I’m serious!

[Chad laughing hysterically] Chad, I’m serious, man! Get off me and sit down! Chad. Come on. Chad. Just– right here. Chad. Come on, man.

Chad: Oh, I told you there was another bar.

Sonny: Chad, don’t do it.

Chad: [Laughing] Why not? Well, thanks to you, I had my own designated driver.

Sonny: What? Your own designated– what happened today?

Chad: “What happened?” My wife was stabbed to death. What, did it slip your mind?

Sonny: No, what happened today? All right, what set you off like this?

Chad: [Sighs] It’s just– don’t worry about the–

Sonny: Chad! Hey, focus! Damn it! Chad! Wait, is this about sarah?

Chad: Oh, man. She’s crazy. What, does she think? That I’m gonna pick up the phone from the person who killed my wife? [Scoffs]

Sonny: Look, chad, I don’t think she was calling to tell you that she did that. I think she was calling you to say that she was innocent. She has an alibi.

Chad: What?

Sonny: She was with rex at the time of the murder.

Chad: [Chuckling]

Sonny: Chad.

Chad: So what you’re saying is, first, clyde didn’t do it and then lucas didn’t do it and now sarah didn’t do it? So what–what does it mean? That my wife stabbed herself to death herself?

[Laughs]

Sonny: Chad, I know–I know how hard this must be, okay? Not knowing who did this horrible thing.

Chad: [Sighs] See, it doesn’t even matter. Because even if we find out who did it, it’s not gonna bring her back, okay? Nothing will. I was taking my antidepressant daily,

Chad: Do you wanna know why I went out drinking today? Because thomas didn’t want to go to the aquarium. I told him that we could do something else. He wanted abigail. And I snapped at him. Because he wanted his mother. I don’t want to be around my own kids. Because I don’t want to have to worry about causing them any more pain.

Jada: [Sighs] No, I haven’t had time. But I better make time because I am bleeding money staying at the salem inn.

Eric: All right, all right, enough. Tomorrow, you’re gonna come and I’m gonna show them.

Jada: That would be great.

Eric: Great.

Jada: And then after, maybe I can take you out to lunch?

Eric: [Chuckles] You don’t have to do that.

Jada: I didn’t mean it as a thank you. I meant as a, well–

Eric: Detective hunter, are you asking me out on a date?

Abe: I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything.

Nicole: Abe, it’s fine. I think what everyone is picking up on is the fact that I will always care about eric. I am so happy with rafe.

Paulina: [Laughs] Good news! The focus group’s numbers are through the roof! The committee loves your chances!

Nicole: Ah, well, congratulations, abe. Paulina, thank you for the drink.

Paulina: Oh, we’re just ordering some dinner. Join us.

Xander: So she put on the mask, murdered abigail, and then on her way out the house, happened to run into lucas.

Sarah: Do you know what I think? If she hadn’t “happened” to run into lucas, she would’ve “happened” to run into somebody else. She didn’t want to just get away with it, she wanted to pin it on me.

Xander: There’s a whole lot of premeditation in that.

Sarah: Well, isn’t gwen known for her organizational skills?

Xander: I was about to marry someone so… sick.

Sarah: It’s just the hard part is getting someone to believe us. I mean, gwen was in prison.

Xander: Gwen wasn’t in prison. She was in statesville. I know flea markets that have tighter security than that place. And we’ll get the police to believe us by showing them evidence. We’ll prove that gwen had the mask.

Sarah: How do we do that?

Xander: We search her room. She texted me where she’s staying, wanted me to know that she’s there for me, since it looked like you were the killer.

Sarah: Oh, she did, did she?

Xander: I think she’s going to regret sharing that bit of information.

Sarah: Mm-hmm.

Jack: I meant what I said about you being able to clear sarah. Especially for maggie’s sake.

Rafe: Mm-hmm.

Jack: It must be hell to wonder if your daughter is capable of doing something like that.

Paulina: Sorry if I put my foot in it before. But I know chemistry. It was plain as day at our wedding.

Abe: So you were thinking about nicole and eric, not about me?

Paulina: Oh, abe. Now, stop. Of course I was focused on the handsome groom.

Paulina: But how could you not notice the sparks flying off those two? Yeah, nicole? She might’ve run off to marry the commish, but I have no doubt in my mind she still has feelings for eric.

Belle: Okay.

Shawn: Look, thank yoU. Thank you for coming.

Belle: Yeah, of course. What’s wrong? You sounded upset on your message.

Shawn: Evan got the court order.

Belle: For the paternity test?

Shawn: Yeah, we did it earlier this morning at the hospital. And evan was telling the truth. Shawn christian is his son.

Belle: Are you sure?

Shawn: Yeah, I had my aunt kayla oversee the testing herself, and she ran it three times.

Belle: Oh, my god. Shawn, I’m so sorry.

Shawn: Now, evan’s gonna take him away.

Evan: The results of the paternity test came back exactly as you said they would.

Orpheus: Congratulations, son. And don’t worrY. I’m gonna get you all set up. Soon as we’re done here, we’re gonna get a crib and a stroller and anything else you need.

Evan: Actually, dad, I don’t need any of that.

Orpheus: What? What are you talking about?

Evan: The reason I asked you here is to say goodbye.

Gabi: Jake and ava’s marriage certificate hasn’t been filed yet? What? So cut the damn line! Brenda, listen, you cannot follow the rules when you are committing a felony. Submitting phony paperwork is a misdemeanor? That’s a fun fact! Here’s another one. If ej finds out there is no certificate filed, he’s gonna know that jake and ava were never married, and I’m gonna be out of a job, and so are you.

Ej: I’m calling your bluff, avA. Getting city hall on the line right now.

Ava: What for? You just checked with them, and they told you that the paperwork for my marriage license hadn’t been filed yet, which makes sense. Between the backlog and the bureaucracy, things over there take forever, and jake and i were just married yesterday.

Ej: At the courthouse? That’s where you claimed to have wed my brother prior to his demise?

Ava: Yeah. That’s what I told you.

Ej: Then I’ll speak directly to the county clerk. He’ll be able to track down the paperwork…If it exists.

[Keypad clicks]

[Line trilling] Yes, hello. I would like you to track down a marriage certificate for me, please. Thank yoU. The names are jake dimera and ava vitali.

Kristen: Rolf, don’t you play with me. What are you talking about? You just said that you couldn’t bring jake back.

Rolf: That is correct. This young man’s life has been tragically cut short. He won’t be rising from the ashes today or any other day. His twin brother, stefan, however, is an entirely different story.

Kristen: Oh. Oh, my god.

Rolf: Not god. It was all me. How fortunate we are to have an heir and a spare. Behold, stefan O. Dimera.

[Monitor beeping]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our liveS.”

[Soft orchestration]

Gabi: Brenda. Brenda, no, no, no, no, no. I pay you generously to perform tasks that my nine-year-old could do asleeP. How long does it take to file a damn piece of paper? I want it done yesterday!

[Sighs] Li.

Shin: Did your assistant mess up your coffee order again?

GabI: Oh no. There was just a little problem with the goldenberg contract. Some paperwork was filed incorrectly, so it’s holding up the signing, but it’s gonna get donE.

Shin: I signed that contract when it was executed last week.

Gabi: I–thank you. I didn’t know that. Thank you for telling me that.

Shin: No problem. Now, why don’t you tell me why you’re lying?

Ava: You’re wasting your time.

Ej: And your time is running out. Now’s your chance to admit what you’ve done. If you confess, I’ll be less inclined to include the authorities.

Ava: My husband’s body isn’t even cold yet, and here you are calling me a liar? Making threats? Begrudging me any small bequest?

Ej: My brother’s shares are no small bequest. You used his death to your advantage.

Ava: Oh, isn’t that what you’re doing here, ej, hmm? Trying to get your hands on jake’s shares so you can take over as ceo?

Ej: I’m not trying to take over anything. I am taking back what belongs to me. The company’s called dimera enterprises. I’m a dimera, and I will reclaim what’s rightfully mine.

Kristen: Is this really stefan?

Rolf: Yes. As you’ll recall, when he was shot, gabi begged me to revive him. However, after my evaluation, I concluded there was nothing that could be done.

Kristen: Not even your magic serum could bring him back?

Rolf: Sadly, stefan had lost the spark of life.

Kristen: So obviously it was too late.

Rolf: So it seemed. But then i told myself, nothing’s impossible, and it wasn’t!

Kristen: It wasn’t?

Rolf: Well, not exactly.

[Monitor beeping]

Belle: I don’t understand how evan could have gotten a court order this fast.

Shawn: I don’t know. I’m thinking it’s whoever strongarmed the governor into pardoning him made it happen.

Belle: I had every intention of trying to fight this.

Shawn: But, I mean, can’t you still? Belle, that’s the reason why I called you. I need you to stop this. We cannot let evan take my son.

Orpheus: What do you mean goodbye?

Evan: I can’t stay in salem. Everyone here thinks I’m a psycho.

Orpheus: Who cares?

Evan: I do, so I need to start fresh as far away from here as possible. I’m going to new zealand, and I’m gonna be with zoe and david.

Orpheus: What?

Evan: I talked to zoe about it. I told her that I understand she has full custody of david, and I won’t fight her on thaT. I want to get to know him. I want my kids to get to know each other, and I want to be there for theM.

Orpheus: Well, how are you gonna get to new zealand? You’re broke.

Evan: I got myself hired on a houseboat. Just to chicago. I’ll earn some cash and go the rest of the way when I’m ready. I’m in no rush. I just want to spend some time alone with my little guy and, you know, not be hunted down by shawn brady or jan spears.

Orpheus: Jan’s dead.

Evan: With her, you never know.

Orpheus: [Sighs] I finally get out of prison, and my whole family’s on the other side of the world.

Evan: You’re welcome to join us.

Orpheus: Yeah, maybe somedaY. I still have unfinished business in salem. No, I just made the mistake of asking brenda for that contract. Obviously, she had it all wrong. Forgive me. I’ve been off my game. It’s been 24 hours.

Shin: I’ll say. Ava vitali coincidentally married jake on the day he died. And suddenly, she has a legal claim to his dimera shares, which certainly benefits you.

Gabi: I’m sorry?

Shin: Ej’s trying to consolidate enough power to oust you as ceo. If he were to get his hands on jake’s shares, he’d be sitting in your chair in no time.

Gabi: Yeah, but that’s not gonna happen.

Shin: Provided you keep jake’s widow on your side since she’s now the beneficiary of those shares. I assume that’s why you left me a message, asking if I’d approve a position here for ava with a six-figure salary and a seat on the board. What are her qualifications again? Mob boss? Makes a mean baked ziti?

GabI: You want ej running this company?

Shin: NO.

Gabi: Well, that makes two of us, so it’s in both our interests to keep ava happy.

Shin: I’m still wondering about the paperwork you wanted filed. Heard you tell brenda you wanted it done yesterday.

GabI: Figure of speech.

Shin: Was it?

Gabi: Mm-hmm.

Shin: Or did it have something to do with making jake and ava’s sudden marriage seem real?

Ava: Your brother is dead, and all you can think about is your stupid company.

Ej: Yes, I’m still here. I seE. Thank you.

[Hangs up]

Ava: Oh, let me guess. They found the marriage certificate? Take your accusations and get the hell out.

Evan: What kind of unfinished business are you talking about?

Orpheus: Nothing you need to worry about, but as soon as it’s done, I’ll be visiting you and little shawn christian.

Evan: That’s not his name.

Orpheus: What?

Evan: I thought I’d keep christian, since it’s my real name, but I want him to be his own person, separate from me and all my mistakes.

Orpheus: Okay, well, what do I call my grandson?

Evan: Maddox frears.

Orpheus: Mm.

Evan: It’s got a nice ring, don’t you think?

Orpheus: Who’s that?

Evan: My lawyer. You can finish thiS. I’m going to claim my kid.

Shawn: Belle, you know this whole thing is shady as hell.

Belle: Shawn–

Shawn: No, we’ve got to fight. We’ve got to fight! I mean, clearly there’s something fishy with this court ordeR. Why don’t we start there? We could try to prove that it was illegally obtained.

Belle: Because even if we could, the paternity results would be the same. The fact is–

Shawn: I know I’m not the biological father. I know that, but, belle, I’ve been there since the day that he was born. I sat there in the nicu. I was praying that he would survive. I have been feeding him. I’ve been changing him. Look, I’ve been singing him to sleep every single nighT. I love the little guy. I love him with all my heart.

Belle: I know you do.

Shawn: So how am I supposed to just hand him over to evan frears, all right? The guy who killed his other son’s mother? I mean, he was planning to kill ciara. He held our daughter hostage at gunpoint. Why would a judge give a baby over to some psychopath?

Belle: Because unfortunately–outrageously– he’s been given a full pardoN. That means criminal record’s been wiped clean.

Shawn: Yeah, but we know that he is dangerous. He is clearly an unfit parent.

Belle: I know this, but there’s nothing that I can point to in a court of law that proves that. And he’s got those test results. You know how biology plays in a custody hearing. Shawn, I know how much you love this baby, but the bottom line is you– you don’t have a legal claim to him.

Shawn: He deserves so much better.

Belle: I know, and he was so lucky to have you. I wish I could help you hang on to him, shawn, but really, there’s just nothing I can dO.

Shawn: [Sighs]

Shawn: I know it was a lot to ask.

Belle: No, it’s not. I mean, you just want what’s best for this baby’s future, and I respect and admire thaT.

Shawn: So what am I supposed to do now? I just give up?

[Doorbell rings]

Belle: I’ll get it.

[Baby babbling]

Shawn: My sweet, little guy. I’ve loved you since the moment I saw you. I’m always gonna love you.

[Footsteps approaching]

Evan: I’m here for maddox.

Shawn: Who?

Evan: My son.

Rolf: I knew stefano would have wanted me to do everything possible to save his namesakE.

Kristen: You’re right about that.

Rolf: So I accepted the challenge and began to toil away in my laboratory, modifying my serum with the hope that it would be powerful enough to revive young stefan.

Kristen: And?

Rolf: Unfortunately, by the time I was ready, gabi had already donated his heart to julie williams, which made things a bit more difficult.

Kristen: Yeah, you don’t say.

Rolf: I was able to resurrect the rest of him, but your poor brother is heartless in the most literal sense of the word.

[Monitor beeping]

GabI: If you’re implying that ava faked her wedding to jake, that’s news to me.

Shin: Think about it, gabi. Jake was mortally wounded right in front of her– she almost died too– and still had the presence of mind to hatch a plan to grab jake’s shares? Even for ava, that’s–

Gabi: No, no, no, no, no. She’s as cold-blooded as they come. She tried to frame my brother as a dirty cop.

Shin: But she didn’t do it alone, right?

GabI: No, she used some of her slimebag friends from her past to help her out.

Shin: Accomplices, like she’d need to pull this off. While she played the grieving widow, she’d need to get someone to doctor the paperwork, someone to make sure it was filed yesterday.

Gabi: Are you implying that I helped her?

Shin: You were at the hospital last night when you called to tell me about jake’s death and the alleged marriage.

Gabi: Li, I went to pay my respects.

Shin: And while you were there, did ava ask you to help her make it look like she and jake got married yesterday?

Gabi: Ava and i hate each other. Why would you think I would help her?

Shin: That’s not an answer, gabi. Did ava vitali rope you into some crazy scheme to fake a wedding so she could help herself to jake’s shares.

GabI: First of all, it was not crazy, and second of all, it was all my idea.

Shin: Hmm.

Ava: You need to leavE.

Ej: Not until I’ve apologized to you. It was terribly insensitive of me to come to you while you’re in mourning and accuse you of using jake’s death to line your own pockets.

Ava: Yeah, it was.

Ej: What I should have done was offer you my condolences and welcome you to the family. I am truly sorry, and welcome to the familY.

Ava: Thanks, I guess.

Ej: My father would have been terribly disappointed in how I’ve conducted myself. He taught me a lot better than this. Family and respect were everything to him.

Ava: Yeah? Even when he was trying to put a bullet in your head? I’m just joking. My father was the same way.

Ej: Well, being the child of a powerful man, it’s complicated.

Ava: [Snorts] Yeah, that’s one word for it.

Ej: Well, if there’s anything I can do to make this time easy for you, just ask.

Ava: Oh, okay. That’s so nice. You know what? Now that you’re mentioned it, maybe you could speed up the transfer of those shares into my name so I could pay the rent here this month.

Ej: I have a better idea. There’s plenty of room at my housE. Why don’t you move in with me?

Shin: It was your idea to fake jake and ava’s marriage?

Gabi: Genius, right?

Shin: How did you–

GabI: Kate was here yesterday. She came to give me a heads-up that she and chad were just giving up their shares to ej.

Shin: So he’d have more ammo to come after you with.

GabI: And i told her I wasn’t scared of ej. And as I was walking her to the door, my brother called me, and that’s when he told me that jake was dead. And of course, we were in shock. We were sad. I know you were too.

Shin: I was very fond of him.

GabI: Then I realized I couldn’t sit around crying because ej sure wasn’t. He was going after jake’s shares, and then after my job.

Shin: How did you get from there to a phony wedding?

Gabi: Well, after that, I went to the hospital, and ava told me that jake was killed defending her from a thug that was trying to steal her engagement ring.

Shin: So they were actually engaged.

Gabi: Yeah, and she had a big, honking ring on her finger, and that’s when the lightbulb went off. If jake had a widow, she–not ej– would be his next of kin.

Shin: And inherit his shares.

Gabi: Mm-hmm. If ava and I worked together, she’d be set for life, and I would still be running the company. We’d both win.

Shin: But, as you said, you and ava despise each other. What makes you think you can trust her?

Gabi: Oh, I can’t trust her, but she’s not gonna double-cross me.

Shin: Because you know the marriage is a sham, and if you expose her, she’d be left with nothing.

Gabi: That’s right. Without those shares, she’s got no money, no job, no home. That skank needs me as much as I need her.

Ava: You want me to move into the dimera mansion?

Ej: It’s the family home, and as I’ve said, you’re family. You’re my sister-in-law. And I can tell you one thing– my father would be appalled to see any dimera living above a garage.

Ava: Hey, don’t knock it till you tried it.

Ej: Something tells me you prefer turndown service and a personal chef.

Ava: I don’t know, ej. Feels wrong considering you never wanted jake under your roof.

Ej: [Sighs] I regret that my brother and i weren’t on better terms before he died, and I’d appreciate it if you gave me the opportunity to make amends by treating you the way he deserved to be treated. So, sis, would you like to move in?

Kristen: So you’re telling me that stefan has been alive without a heart for four years?

Rolf: That depends on how you define “alive.”

Kristen: I don’t believe this. That means my best friend, lanI, didn’t kill him after all. I mean, she’s gonna be so relieved to hear that, not to mention that my brother here is the frickin’ tin man.

Rolf: I beg your pardon?

Kristen: Okay, just hold on. Let’s just go back. So stefan’s heart went to julie? And then?

Rolf: I appropriated his body. Meanwhile, gabi believed her husband had been cremated and his remains interred in the dimera crypT.

Kristen: Which obviously wasn’t truE. And then what happened?

Rolf: With stefan’s blood pumping through artificial means, I began the process of acquiring a new heart for him.

Kristen: What, like ordering one online? Shipping takes four to six weeks.

Rolf: It’s much more complex than that, I assure yoU. But my plans to make him whole again were rudely interrupted when I was sent to prisoN.

Kristen: Which begs the question–how did you keep him alive when you were gone?

Evan: You didn’t think I’d keep calling my son “shawn,” did you?

Shawn: That’s his namE.

Evan: That’s your name. And you’re nothing to him, so we’ll be going noW.

Belle: I’ll need to see a court order that gives you permission to take custody.

Evan: Read it and weep.

Shawn: Who’d your daddy threaten to make this happen, huh?

Evan: Back off, man.

Shawn: You should be in a cage.

Evan: Not according to the governor of this great state. Now, step asidE.

Shawn: This is nuts. I haven’t even had a chance to get his things together.

Evan: We don’t need much. We’ll be in a boat, traveling lighT.

Shawn: Boat?

Evan: Maddox and i are leaving. We’re starting over.

Shawn: To where?

Evan: New zealand, with my sister and his brother. I want him to grow up around family. Now, stop stalling and hand him over.

Belle: Okay, evan, just– can’t you have a heart? Just give shawn a few minutes with the baby.

Evan: No.

[Somber music]

[Baby sobbing]

Shawn: I’m so sorry about this, little guy.

[Sniffles] I’m gonna think about you every day.

Evan: Say goodbye.

Shin: Congratulations, gabi. Well played.

Gabi: I can’t tell if you mean that.

Shin: I’ve always admired your ingenuity. I just don’t understand why you kept me in the darK.

GabI: You’re on the dimera board. I mean, if I told you I was perpetuating a fraud, I’d be putting you in a terrible position, one that you are in right now.

Shin: Well, i like all of the positions you put me in.

Gabi: So you actually approve of me teaming up with ava vitali?

Shin: I approve of you doing whatever keeps dimera at number one. Gabi, you have my backing as ceo precisely because you’re capable of moves like this. I just need to know you’re making them. Next time, trust me.

Gabi: I will. I promise.

Ava: Ej, I’ve been through a lot these past couple of days, and I just–I don’t think that I can handle any more big changes.

Ej: Part of the reason we have extra room is that chad moved out. Being surrounded by memories of abigail was just too much for him to bear. Perhaps a change of scenery would be beneficial for you as welL.

Ava: But I don’t want to forget him.

Ej: Of course not. Moving wouldn’t be about that. It would be about helping you to heal, and that is very difficult to do when you’re on your owN.

Ava: [Scoffs] I can’t believe he’s actually gone. You know, none of this feels real.

Ej: I know, and it’s going to take some time, but I promise you it will get better.

Ava: [Sniffles]

[Monitor beeping]

Kristen: Don’t patients in his condition need round-the-clock care?

Rolf: Not if they are patients of mine.

Kristen: Oh, my god, rolf. I mean, you’re gooD. I know you’re good, but you’re not good enough to be in prison and looking after my unconscious brother, let alone for four years.

Rolf: That’s what all these machines are for! They tend to stefan’s every need. As long as the power doesn’t go out, it requires no supervision.

Kristen: Wow. Okay, that is seriously impressive. Well, I mean, you must be racking up a hell of an electric bill, but kudos. So what’s the next step?

Rolf: We need to acquire a donor heart.

Kristen: Oh, well, like you were saying, your search was interrupted when you went to prisoN.

Rolf: That is correct.

Kristen: Well, where are you on that? I mean, is it gonna be difficult to find a match?

Rolf: Mm, all that is required is that the donor and the recipient have the same blood type. Of course, there’s always the possibility of rejection… unless the donor and the recipient happen to be identical twins.

Kristen: Jake’s dying…

Rolf: Is the best possible scenario!

[Laughs] Not that anyone wished he would have an untimely demise.

Kristen: Okay, so you’re telling me that you can take jake’s heart, put it into stefan, bring him back to life as if nothing ever happened?

Rolf: We won’t know for certain until the deed is done, but I will, as they say, give it my best shot.

Belle: Here. Shawn, I wish I could have done something to stop this.

Ej: I’ll alert harold, the butler, and just let any of us know when you’re readY.

Shawn: The baby’s gone, and he’s never coming back. Are you happy now?

Belle: Happy? What? I’m devastated, for you and for that baby. This is not at all what I wanted.

Shawn: But not at you. Look, I’m angry at evan and jan and the world, but mostly jan, okay? Why would she let me get attached to a baby that’s not even mine and make me believe that I’m the father?

Belle: Because she’s–

Shawn: Yeah, of course, because she thought it would get us closer together. But where did it get her? Got her dead in the water.

Evan: Jan? I thought–

Jan: What, that I was pushing up daisies? Not me, honeY. Too mean to die.

Evan: How did you–

Jan: Survive? Sheer will. You see, I wasn’t gonna let belle win, so after that bitch pushed me in the water, I kept saying to myself, “hang on, jan. All you have to do is pull yourself to shore and get to safetY.” And that’s exactly what I did.

Evan: But the coast guard dragged the river, and the search came up empty.

Jan: Well, maybe they should have looked in the yacht where I was stowed awaY. That’s it right there. The squidlife crisis. Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been hiding out, working on my plan to see my son. I just happened to look out the window, when who walks by but the two of you? Fate, don’t you think?

Evan: You lied to me, jan. You kept my son from me.

Jan: It was nothing personal. I’ve missed my baby so much. May I please hold him?

Evan: Not a chance.

Jan: Just for a moment.

[Baby sobbing] Look, he hears my voice. He needs me. Oh, my gosh, I’m leaking. Evan, damn it, just hand him over.

[Chuckles] Aw, shawn christian.

Evan: His name is maddoX.

Jan: Maddox?

Evan: Okay, you held him. Now give him back.

Jan: I don’t think so.

[Water splashes]

[Baby babbles] And then there were two.

Belle: We don’t know that jan is dead.

Shawn: Well, her body was never found, and it’s been weekS. There’s been no trace of her.

Belle: Well, still, i think we’ve learned the hard way not to underestimate jan’s ability to resurface.

Shawn: Look, whether she does or not, doesn’t change the fact that evan frears is leaving salem right now with the son that I thought was mine.

Jan: See, mommy took self-defense classes while she was in prisoN. Yes, she did. Boy, did those come in handy. Am I right, my little angel? One kick to the solar plexus. Instant unconsciousness. And I know you want daddy shawn back in the picture as much as I do, but for now, it just has to be us. So you and mommy, we’re gonna be going on a little trip. But don’t you worry, my sweethearT. Salem hasn’t seen the last of team spears.

GabI: Now that you got your workout in, what’s next on the schedule?

Shin: I actually have to run to a meeting, but there’s no rule against working out twice in one day, is there?

Gabi: Not that I’m aware of.

Shin: Then, I look forward to repeating this later. Okay.

Gabi: Yeah.

[Chuckles]

[Phone ringing] What’s up?

Ava: Well, ej was just here, and he almost busted me. What the hell took you so long to file that marriage certificate? I was sweating bullets.

Gabi: Ava, if I told you I’m gonna do something, it’ll get done. Don’t worry about it.

Ava: Well, I’m just glad that ej’s gone.

GabI: Did he leave satisfied that you and jake were married?

Ava: Oh, so much so that he invited me to move into his house, you know, considering I’m family and all.

Gabi: What’d he say when you turned him down?

Ava: Oh, I didn’T.

[Eerie music]

Ej: I asked the widow dimera to move in here. I trust you approve, since I’m following your sage advice– keep your family close and the pretenders closer.

Kristen: Do you really think this is going to work?

Rolf: I am cautiously optimistic that when his heart is beating in his twin’s chest, stefan O. Dimera will rise again!

[Evil laughter]

Xander: Sarah? “Had to go out too. Be back soon.” Dear god. Where did she go?

Marlena: I’m gonna have you take another deep breath. As you exhale, let all the tension flow out of your body. Be aware of your breathing. When you feel comfortable, you can go ahead and close your eyes. You’re going to remember everything we’ve talked about here. Right now, we’re going to talk about the day that abigail died.

Kristen: Oh. Well, when we got out of statesville, I told you to lie low until I needed you, but I didn’t know it’d be this soon.

Rolf: Your father always said I must stay ready to avoid having to get ready.

Kristen: He was also fond of saying “it’s good to be back.” I just wonder if jake will share in that sentiment.

[Knocking on door]

Ava: Go away.

[Knocking continues]

Ava: I said get the hell out of here!

[Loud banging on door]

Ava: Okay. All right. You have a hell of a lot of nerve–

Jake: That any way to greet the man you love?

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Xander: She shouldn’t be out alone. She could have another episode.

Gwen: Hi. Are you on your way out?

Xander: What I do is none of your business, gwen. What do you want?

Gwen: When leo and i saw you just now–

Xander: Yeah, what about it?

Gwen: Well, you seemed upset that lucas had been cleared. Is that because you were afraid that sarah might be charged with abigail’s murder?

Marlena: Sarah, I ran into you at the hospital. You were looking for kayla. Do you remember what we talked about? Oh, hi sarah.

Sarah: Hi. Um, is kayla on duty?

Marlena: Um, she is. I think she might be in surgery.

Sarah: I need help. I think the antidote is wearing off. I was afraid that the antidote to the drug that kristen gave me wasn’t working anymore.

Marlena: That’s right. What else do you remember?

Sarah: I said that I– I saw kristen coming at me with the syringe, but… it was just victor with a pen.

Marlena: Do you remember the advice that I gave you? I also think you might want to talk to abigail. She’s been through all this.

Sarah: Yeah, that–that’s a great idea. Thank you so much for talking me down, marlena. You said that I should speak to abigail because she had the same experience with the drug that I was having.

Marlena: And did you take that advice? Did you go to see abigail? Sarah, it’s okay. Take your time.

Gwen: What are you doing here?

Sarah: We haven’t been properly introduced. I’m sarah horton. Oh, come on. My face has to seem a little familiar, seeing as you borrowed it to break up with xander as me. Gotta be a little strange for you, huh? It’s like looking into a mirror. I went to statesville prison to see gwen.

Marlena: Oh. What did you do there?

Sarah: I confronted her. About everything.

Marlena: What’s “everything”?

Sarah: Not telling xander that she knew where I was. Putting on a mask that looked like me and breaking up with him. Giving me a second dose of the drug that kristen gave me. All of it.

Marlena: And how did gwen react?

Sarah: She said I wouldn’t have gotten the drug at all if abigail hadn’t left a syringe full of it where kristen could find it.

Marlena: When you left the prison, did you go to the dimera house? Did you–did you find abigail?

Ava: You–you can’t be here. I saw your dead body at the hospital. Oh, I’m losing my mind again.

Jake: No. No, you’re not. My old man, they didn’t call him “the phoenix” for nothing. Turns out I take after him.

Jake: [Shouts]

Ava: [Screams]

[Chuckles]

Jake: See? You’re not getting rid of me that easily. Oh, no, no.

Ava: [Chuckles] Oh, my god. You’re really here!

Jake: Come here.

Ava: [Gasps]

[Breathing heavily]

Ava: It was a dream. It was nothing but a dream.

Kristen: Well, it is a good thing you made me go to the hospital as soon as you did.

Rolf: If we hadn’t, those imbecilic orderlies would’ve taken him away and had his remains incinerated to dust.

Kristen: Mm, we couldn’t have that, could we?

Kristen: We’ve got big plans for brother jake.

[Monitor beeping]

[Sinister music]

Rolf: I admit to being pleasantly surprised that you got on board so quickly with my latest lazarus project.

Kristen: I barely knew jake. But still, he’s my father’s son and that means a lot to me.

Rolf: Stefano would be very proud to hear you say that.

Kristen: I hope so. Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s give jake here a new lease on life.

[Knocking on door]

Gabi: Hi, we need to talk.

Ava: Oh, by all means, come on in.

Gabi: You were great at the hospital yesterday.

Ava: Thanks.

Gabi: We can’t stop there.

Ava: What does that mean?

Gabi: Did you see ej’s face when you flashed the wedding ring?

Ava: Yeah, he bought it. So did kayla.

Gabi: Yeah, but he hates it and he’s gonna do anything he can to freeze you out. We need to lock down the claim, your claim on jake’s estate, before ej and tony figure out this whole thing’s a scam.

Tony: So ava’s claiming that she married jake just before he was killed?

Ej: Mm-hmm. Convenient, don’t you think?

Tony: Do you think there’s a possibility that she engineered the marriage and then put a hit out on her new husband?

Ej: I don’t think so. The gunman tried to kill ava as well. The police are treating it like a robbery/homicide.

Tony: Oh. What did the gunman say?

Ej: Not much. He was shot and killed by a policewoman.

Tony: Oh, I see. So your only concern here is ava’s possible claim on jake’s shares.

Ej: What else would I be concerned about? As should you. I mean, it’s bad enough that father’s company is being run into the ground by a former waitress.

Tony: Oh, come on. Gabi hasn’t been doing that for a long time.

Ej: She’s also the current mistress of young mr. Shin. If she and ava have formed some kind of an alliance, shin could back them and you and i could end up out in the cold.

Xander: [Scoffs] You used to be better at playing the game.

Gwen: What game?

Xander: Come on. You love the thought of sarah going to prison for abigail’s murder. It’s written all over your face.

Gwen: The last thing I want is for sarah to be found guilty.

Xander: And why is that?

Gwen: Because I feel terrible for what happened to her. I mean, I’m partly to blame for her being the way she is now.

Xander: If you feel bad it’s only because your plan didn’t work out the way you wanted it to.

Gwen: Look, you don’t believe me, but I did come here to help you.

Xander: You’re right, I don’t believe you.

Gwen: Why don’t I come up with an alibi for sarah? I’m quite good at doing things like that.

Xander: What sort of alibi?

Gwen: Why don’t you say that she was with you?

Xander: Because she wasn’t and the cops know it. I was in new york and sarah doesn’t remember what she was doing that night. Lucas horton swears he saw her running down the stairs and I don’t know a single person that can prove he’s lying. Now, are you happy now?

Marlena: Sarah, when you left the prison, you know where you went next?

Sarah: Seeing gwen was so–

[Sighs] She didn’t care what she did to me. I was so angry.

Marlena: I understand. That’s why I want to know what you did next.

Sarah: I went back to xander’s room at the inn.

Marlena: Was he there?

Sarah: No. He was in new york. He had a job interview.

Marlena: So you were alone. Can you tell me what you did?

Sarah: I just wanted to sleep and forget the whole day, so I took a sleeping pill, then I got into bed.

Marlena: Were you able to sleep?

Sarah: For a while, but…

Sarah: I had a bad dream and it woke me up. I decided that I had to see abigail right then and there. It was supposed to rain so I grabbed my raincoat.

Marlena: Lucas mentioned a raincoat.

Sarah: What’d you say?

Marlena: Nothing, I’m just making a note to myself. Please, I’m sorry, go on.

Sarah: Uh… I was about to go to the door when– before I could leave, somebody knocked.

[Knocking on door]

Sarah: What are you doing here?

Marlena: Sarah, this is very important. Can you tell me who was at the door? I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Ava: Jake died yesterday. I could’ve died along with him and yet here you are, again, scheming to get your grubby little hands on his dimera stock.

Gabi: I thought you were on board with our plan. What happened?

Ava: Oh, my god.

Gabi: Are you having second thoughts, ava? Because right now is not the time to grow a conscience.

Ava: Okay, you were involved with jake for a very long time. You said that you loved him.

Gabi: Yes, I was crazy about him.

Ava: Okay. So why are you behaving like it doesn’t matter that he is dead?

Gabi: We really have to go through with this again? Without your claim on jake’s estate, you have nothing. You don’t even have your name on this dump.

Ava: Okay, it’s not like I’m walking away from a sure thing here. We lied to ej about jake and I being married. You don’t think that he’s out right now hiring a pi?

Gabi: Should go for it because he’s not gonna find anything suspicious.

Ava: Yeah, you don’t know that.

Gabi: Oh, but I do.

Ava: What’s that?

Gabi: The answer to our prayers, otherwise known as your marriage license, mrs. Dimera.

Tony: Yes, I agree that ms. Vitali is a threat that must be dealt with.

Ej: Finally.

Tony: So how do we do it?

Ej: When I learned about jake’s death, I went directly to the hospital. Gabi hernandez was already there and she knew all about the marriage.

Tony: I think she was there because she was visiting a friend who’d lost her husband.

Ej: Mm-mm-mm. I checked. They barely spoke until poor jake’s untimely death. Gabi undoubtedly followed the ambulance to the hospital so she could propose this plan to ava. And then she saw to it that ava was listed as jake’s legal next of kin by the hospital.

Tony: But– but isn’t jake’s dear old mum the logical next of kin?

Ej: You want to drag vivian alamain into this?

Tony: Well, she’s in it whether we like it or not. She’s gonna find out that she lost yet another son. You don’t think she’s going to be upset about all of this?

Ej: I hadn’t thought of that.

Tony: Well, you should think about it now. And I think we should go and visit father’s ex-paramour as soon as possible.

[Monitor beeping]

Kristen: Uh, shouldn’t he be opening his eyes or something?

Rolf: I don’t know what to expect. I’m usually able to administer the drug much closer to the time of death.

Kristen: Okay, then, what are you saying? That this might not work?

Rolf: For the serum to be effective, the individual must have some latent spark of life for it to work on. Jake’s body was left alone for hours after he was shot.

Kristen: So there’s no hope?

Rolf: I’m afraid that may be the case. I seem to have been too late to help him.

Kristen: [Scoffs]

Marlena: Sarah, is something keeping you from telling me who was at the door?

Sarah: I just– I can’t remember.

Marlena: All right. You’re doing fine. Just take another deep breath. And as you exhale, let those memories come back to you.

Sarah: It was–

Marlena: No, don’t rush it. Just let it come to you.

Sarah: Rex? What on earth are you doing here? My asthma felt anything but normal.

Marlena: Rex brady was at the door?

Sarah: Yes. I was so surprised.

Rex: I’m sorry that I didn’t call first. I just had to see you.

Marlena: Sarah, you’re doing just great. Try to remember what rex was doing there. Why did he say that he had to see you?

Sarah: He told me that he hadn’t been able to get me out of his mind.

Rex: I’ve been wanting to see you ever since my mom told me that you’d been rescued. But I–I wanted to make sure you had some time to deal with what kristen did to you. Good lord, she kept you prisoner for a year? She must be insane.

Sarah: Yeah. Um…I heard that she put on a mask that made her look like me and told you that I wanted us to get back together.

Rex: Yeah, and she was still wearing the mask when she dumped me about a minute later.

Sarah: Rex, I am so sorry that she put you through that.

Rex: Are you kidding me? You should not be apologizing. This is all my fault. I should’ve realized that something was off about you.

Sarah: Oh, my gosh. No, no, no, please– please do not blame yourself. Kristen had everyone fooled.

Rex: [Sighs] It still bothers me that– that I wanted to believe what kristen told me. I wanted to believe that you had come to your senses and realized that you wanted me and not xander, because– oh, hell. Um… because I still love you, sarah. I’ve never stopped loving you. And I’ve never stopped hoping that there was a chance for us.

Sarah: Oh, rex. Honey, I’m so sorry. Xander and I are back together and we’ve never been more in love.

Rex: Right. Um, I–I under–I understand.

Rex: You’re wearing your coat, so you were obviously going somewhere when– when I arrived, so–

Sarah: Yeah, I was.

Rex: Yeah, so, um…I won’t keep you any longer. [Chuckles]

Sarah: Okay.

Rex: Whoa! Sarah? You’re not feeling well?

Sarah: No, I’m okay, I’m just–

Rex: Okay, okay. Come here, come on.

Sarah: I almost passed out.

Marlena: I’m guessing it was the combination of the sleep medication and the other drugs in your system.

Rex: Okay. The only place you’re going is right here, to bed.

Sarah: Mm.

Xander: Don’t do that.

Gwen: Sorry. Comforting you is still an instinct for me.

Xander: I don’t want comfort from you, gwen. I have sarah for that.

Gwen: Of course. And who knows? I mean, maybe with the right solicitor, she might get off.

Xander: What are you talking about?

Gwen: What? I’m just saying that even if she doesn’t have an alibi and god forbid she did it, well, she wasn’t in her right mind, was she? Isn’t there something called “temporary insanity”? What are you doing?

Xander: You are leaving.

Gwen: No, all I’m saying is that bayview is a far better option than statesville.

Xander: She’s not going to either place if I have anything to say about it, gwen.

Gwen: You don’t, do you? Look, even if she does go to statesville, governor’s quite free about giving pardons out these days.

Xander: Yeah, how’d you pull that off anyway?

Gwen: Um… kristen vouched for me.

Xander: Kristen. [Scoffs] Should’ve known you two would get along. You’re both out our minds. Kristen lent you the sarah mask, right? The one that fooled everyone, including me. Scares me to think of you two back out on the street. God only knows what she’s up to now.

Kristen: Rolf, there has to be something you can do. I mean, you’re a genius for god’s sake.

Rolf: I appreciate your confidence in me, but I doubt whether even my best efforts will yield the results we want. I fear this young man is too far gone.

Kristen: Don’t tell me that. Don’t you dare tell me that. Not after you got my hopes up! No, you keep working on him until you bring him back and I’m not leaving this creepy, god-forsaken lab until I can take my brother with me.

Gabi: Ava, I would love for jake to walk in through that door and straight into your arms, but unfortunately, that’s just not gonna happen. But if you sign this marriage license, you’re gonna stop ej from grabbing jake’s stock and telling you to get lost.

Ava: Okay. So what if I do sign that? What happens next?

Gabi: I’ll take it from there. You just trust me.

Ava: Oh, gabi. That was the wrong thing to say.

Ej: You think vivian alamain is the answer to the problem? That’s like throwing kerosene on a brush fire.

Tony: Why, do you have a better idea?

Ej: Better than going into business with a woman who has a habit of burying her enemies alive? Yes, I think I do.

Tony: Well, I’d love to hear it.

Ej: The first thing–

[Phone beeps]

Tony: What? Is it another problem?

Ej: [Chuckles] To borrow from the bard, it seems that our fretting over jake’s merry widow may turn out to be much ado about nothing. Moderate to severe eczema still disrupts my skin.

Marlena: When I count to three, you’re gonna be wide awake. You’ll feel refreshed, relaxed. You’ll remember everything we talked about. One…two…three. Open your eyes.

Sarah: Rex was there that night, in xander’s room. He helped put me to bed. He said that I was too out of it to go anywhere.

Marlena: He was right.

Sarah: What if I never left the inn? What if I never went to the dimera mansion? What if– what if I was nowhere near abigail when she was killed?

Marlena: That would be a great relief. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Sarah: No, you’re right. I can’t trust my mind. Maybe rex was just a hallucination.

Marlena: Let’s find out.

Sarah: Who are you calling?

Marlena: I’m calling rex, of course.

[Line ringing]

Rolf: There is one more thing I can try.

Kristen: Do it.

Rolf: It’s very risky.

Kristen: What does he have to lose? Look at him.

Rolf: I’ve been tinkering with my formula. I developed a prototype for a much stronger serum.

Kristen: Perfect. Use it.

Rolf: You don’t understand. It’s untested.

Kristen: Oh, okay. So when does a mad scientist wait for fda approval? No, no! Use that drug on my brother! Go! [Groans]

[Monitor beeping]

Gabi: What–what is it now?

Ava: You keep saying that we both have a lot riding on getting jake’s stock in dimera. But I’m the one who’s taking all the risk.

Gabi: Excuse me? I am helping you defraud the dimera family and that crazy little bat vivian alamain. You don’t think I’m taking any risk?

Ava: Okay. Let’s say that this blows up in our faces. Yep, you’re gonna lose your gig as ceo, but you still have your late husband’s shares in dimera, right? Mm-hmm. Yes, along with that little clothing company of yours. Not to mention a few bucks in the bank. I gave up my family money for my son. And as you say, I don’t have a dime to my name. And you know what? I’ll probably end up in jail. So you know what I’m gonna need? I’m gonna need more than a promise from you of some dividend checks.

Gabi: You want more. Like what?

Ava: Oh, I’m so glad you asked. I want an executive position at dimera enterprises, one that comes with a nice, six-figure salary and a seat on the board.

Gabi: Yeah, no problem. Yeah, I’ll talk to shin, the dimera brothers, tell them all about your business resume. I’m sure they’ll be super excited to have you on board.

Ava: I used to run my own company. Plus, I know how to prove myself. I’m not stupid.

Gabi: You’re a mafia princess!

Ava: Oh, please. Like the dimeras’ hands are squeaky clean? Listen, if you want to keep your position as ceo, you better find a way to get the necessary players involved. Announcer: Type 2 diabetes?

Marlena: Hold on, rex. I’m gonna–I’m gonna put you on speaker. Okay. Can you hear me?

Rex: I can hear you just fine.

Marlena: Okay, I’m– I’m with sarah right now.

Sarah: Hi, rex. I really need your help.

Rex: Okay.

Sarah: Um, can you tell me if you came and saw me at xander’s room in the salem inn?

Marlena: That would be on june 10th.

Rex: [Sighs] I was kind of hoping you’d forgotten about that. It would’ve saved me a lot of embarrassment.

Sarah: So you were there? You really were?

Rex: I really was.

Marlena: Would you give us your version of what happened at that point?

Rex: I decided on a whim to see sarah so that I could tell her that I still loved her. Just hoping there was still a chance for her and me. And she turned me down flat. And she was walking me to the door and she felt woozy so I led her over to the bed and I monitored her pulse and her respiration. They were both stable, so I knew I didn’t have to take her to the emergency room. And then she fell asleep. And I watched her sleep for a bit, you know, just to make sure she was gonna be okay. When I determined that she was, I left.

Marlena: How long were you there?

Rex: Couple hours maybe. I do know that I did not leave until after 10:00.

Sarah: Thank you, rex. You have no idea how much you’ve just helped me.

Rex: I’d like to know. What’s going on?

Sarah: I’ll call you later and I’ll explain everything, but thank you so much.

Rex: Sure. Bye.

Sarah: Do you know what this means?

Marlena: I do. It means you have an alibi for the time abigail was killed.

Gabi: You’re blackmailing me.

Ava: Blackmail? This isn’t a police procedural, honey, this is real life. And what I’m doing is negotiating. Ej thinks that I’m the one who is married to jake, so I hold all the cards here.

Gabi: All right.

Ava: All right, what?

Gabi: All right. I will talk to shin, I will talk to the board about getting what you want. Now, will you please just sign this marriage license so I can take it to city hall and get it filed?

Ava: All you had to do was ask nicely.

Gabi: Just–just–

Ava: You forget something?

Gabi: Did you really love jake?

Ava: I really did. I think he was pretty much what I was searching for all of my life.

Gabi: I feel very sorry for you. Yeah, I cared about jake a lot. But I was really only with him because he reminded me so much of his brother. Stefan was the love of my life. And a love like that only happens once.

[Monitor beeping]

Rolf: I’m sorry. The new serum was no more successful than the other.

Kristen: But his heart is beating again.

Rolf: Yes, it is, but there’s no brain activity. Jake is dead.

Kristen: Damn. Really thought I was getting brother back today.

[Sinister music]

Kristen: Rolf? What are you thinking?

Rolf: That you may still get your wish.

Sarah: When you went to new york, but I forgot about it.

Xander: Rex was here? He came here to this room? When I wasn’t here? You didn’t tell me?

Sarah: Well, honey, I didn’t remember.

Xander: What made him show up?

Sarah: He wanted us to try again.

Xander: Cheeky bugger! Who does he think he is?

Sarah: You don’t understand. I told him that I love you, okay? But as he was leaving, I started to feel funny.

Xander: Funny how?

Sarah: Like I was gonna faint, so he helped me over to the bed and then he stayed here for like two hours.

Xander: The nerve of that bastard! I–

Sarah: Will you please stop with the jealousy thing, honey? Just listen to me! This was on the night of the murder.

Xander: Oh, well, you didn’t mention that part. Does–wait, does this mean?

Sarah: I couldn’t have killed abigail. Rex is gonna tell the police that he was here with me when she died.

Xander: Then you have an alibi.

Xander: Oh, sarah! This is the most wonderful news. God bless rex brady!

[Both sigh]

Sarah: Wait, what is it? What are you thinking?

Xander: Not what…who. Lucas bloody horton. Son of a bitch swore he saw you at the dimera house the night of the murder. I knew he was lying.

[Dramatic music]

[Knocking on door]

Ava: Oh, for god’s sake, just leave me alone.

[Knocking continues]

Ava: Oh, my god. If that is gabi again, so help me god. Ej, what do you want?

Ej: I came by to advise you to give up the scheme. I know you were never married to jake.

Ava: When jake died, he and I were husband and wife and you got a lot of nerve talking to me like this, especially right now.

Ej: I checked with city hall, love. There’s no record of any marriage between jake dimera and ava vitali.

Ava: His death certificate probably isn’t there yet either. Doesn’t mean he’s not dead.

Ej: You’re making this up so you can get a hold on my brother’s estate.

Ava: Okay, will you just do me a favor? When you get home, call the city clerk’s office again and ask about the marriage license. I’m sure it’ll be there.

Ej: How can you be so sure?

Ava: If you’ll excuse me, I didn’t get much sleep last night.

Ej: Oh, I have a better idea. Why don’t I call the city clerk right now?

Kristen: Rolf, don’t you play with me. What are you talking about? You just said that you couldn’t bring jake back.

Rolf: That is correct. This young man’s life has been tragically cut short. He won’t be rising from the ashes today, or any other day. His twin brother, stefan, however, is an entirely different story.

Kristen: [Gasps softly]
