Jack: Hey.

Phyllis: Looks like we have the same idea — drinking coffee in the afternoon. You want to join me? I mean, it could be us, you know, trying to get back to normal, that thing.

[ Chuckles nervously ] I’ll pay.

Jack: I’d love to. I can’T. I just stopped by to get some coffee and snacks before I fly to spain with ashley.

Phyllis: Oh, you’re going to spain? Why?

Jack: It’s abby. She’s having a tougher time dealing with the loss of her husband than any of us realized. She just left town.

Phyllis: Oh, and you think that she might be in spain?

Jack: Chance was in valencia when his safe house blew up, so we’re hoping that maybe she’s there trying to prove that he didn’t die, which breaks my heart.

Ashley: Hi. Thanks.

Victor: Here to say goodbye?

Ashley: Well, I’m all ready to go. Yes. I’m packed. And by the way, jack’s coming with me. I hope that’s not a problem for the jet manifest.

Victor: Mm. Well, I’m sure jack is as concerned about the whole situation as we all are.

Ashley: Yes.

Victor: But after what devon and I found in abby’s motel room, I’ve changed my mind.

Ashley: What do you mean? What did you find?

Victor: A military pin that I’m sure belongs to chance. And she accidentally left it behind.

Ashley: Which confirms what we were thinking — she went to spain to find chance.

Victor: Which means I’ve changed my mind about how we will handle things. Jack’s no longer needed to come along with you. I’ll be there with you.

Ashley: Well, I thought we agreed that I would go, to appeal to her as her mother.

Victor: Well, now her father will be there, as well.

Sharon: Okay, I am headed back to the coffeehouse, and i will see you later. Hello? Noah? Do you have your ear buds in? Noah, is everything okay?

Noah: Sorry. I was just, uh — I was just thinking.

Sharon: Yeah, I can see that. That’s been happening a lot lately. What’s wrong?

Noah: Nothing. Just zoning out. You know us artist types.

[ Chuckles ]

Sharon: I’m not sure I do know. Why don’t you tell me more about that?

Noah: Mom, I’m fine. Really. I’m gonna go for a run. That always helps clear my head. I’ll see you later, okay?

Nick: Abby’s in spain? I thought she was just going away for a couple days to deal with her grief.

Devon: No, your dad and i think that she’s convinced that chance is alive.

Nick: But you said you’d talked to her and gotten her to accept chance’s death.

Devon: Yeah, we thought we did, but she’s talked herself back into it, and now she’s off looking for him.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Damn it.

Devon: I know. She slipped a note under my door saying she’s gonna be gone longer than expected, and then your dad tracked her down to a motel, but she was gone by the time we got there. And no one’s heard from her since.

Nick: You don’t think there’s any way, though, that chance could have gotten out of that building alive?

Devon: Not according to christine and the state department, no. I mean, he’s — he’s been presumed dead.

Nick: [ Sighs ] That just means when she does finally accept the truth, it’s just gonna devastate her even more.

Sally: You wanted to see me?

Adam: Have a seat.

Sally: What’s up?

Adam: I understand from our social-media team that you have become quite the hot commodity.

Sally: Well, the rumors are true. I’ve gotten a ton of new followers on my personal accounts, and my e-mail has been blowing up with request for interviews and desperate brides clamoring for a copy of victoria’s wedding gown.

Adam: Well, normally I would prefer my staff to create stories instead of being subjects of them, but I think we need to capitalize on this. I think we need to take the opportunity to add to the newman media success story.

Sally: Yeah. I agree. What, uh, do you have in mind?

Adam: Well, you and chloe had an idea early on to make you an on-camera personality, create video content for newman fashions that people won’t want to miss. I think it’s an opportune time to pull the trigger on that.

Sally: Really?

Adam: Mm-hmm. I want to monetize public interest in you and generate increased traffic. Are you still interested in that kind of exposure?

Sally: [ Sighs ] Oh, man. I — I don’t know. I mean, you know me. I’m a total introvert, and i kind of prefer to stay behind the scenes, so I —

Sally: No. [ Laughs ]

Adam: So, I can count on you and chloe to run with this?

Sally: Yeah, absolutely. What’s the budget?

Adam: [ Inhales sharply ] Uh, well, come up with a proposal, and we’ll talk.

Sally: Okay, well, I already have a ton of ideas because, frankly, this was kind of my plan from the beginning.

Adam: I always suspected that you had one.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: You’re too driven to leave anything to chance.

Sally: I’m gonna take that as a compliment.

Adam: It was meant as one.

Sally: You know, my big master plan went through one big change along the way, though.

Adam: Oh, yeah? What’s that?

Sally: You. I’ve given up hope that we’re ever gonna see each other outside of the office.

Tessa: Oh, hi!

Sharon: I saw your drink order on the counter, and i thought I’d bring it over.

Tessa: Oh, well, thank you.

Sharon: How’s mariah?

Tessa: Uh…well, you know, she’s throwing herself into work, more projects, more hours.

Sharon: Mm, I figured as much. She’s kind of hard to get a hold of. Should I be worried?

Tessa: This thing with abby, her leaving the baby with devon without giving mariah a heads-up — uh, it threw her. I think she’s feeling lost again. So, maybe it’s a good thing that she’s working so much. I mean, at least that’s what I’m telling myself. I’m trying to be there for her, but, you know, I’m busy, too. I’m finishing up my first lp.

Sharon: Oh, right. I heard about that. That’s exciting. And noah told me that you asked him to collaborate on the artwork.

Tessa: Oh, yes. I want him to say yes so bad!

Sharon: I’m so glad that you asked him to do that. Noah could use a new project, too. He’s been a little down since he got home, and I suspect he had some heartbreak in london that he isn’t willing to talk about yet.

Nikki: Well, hello, ashley.

Ashley: Hi.

Nikki: You ready to leave for spain?

Ashley: I am.

Victor: So am I.

Nikki: What? I thought —

Victor: I have decided to go along with ashley.

Ashley: But you understand that time is of the essence because abby has a head start. You said yourself you can’t leave until later today because of business, but I’m leaving here and I’m going straight to the airport.

Victor: Adam can take over for me. So I’m free to go.

Nikki: I don’t understand. Why the change of heart?

Victor: Because I’m afraid that abby will take unnecessary risks.

Nikki: Why would you think she would put herself in danger?

Victor: Because I know abby, okay? Once she makes up her mind to do something, she won’t let go. Ashley knows that. That’s why she’s flying to spain to bring abby home, right?

Ashley: Well, yes, hopefully, but finding that military pin does not change our agreed-upon plan, victor, and I just don’t see the point of us both going to europe.

Victor: I’m her father. I want to be there.

Nikki: If abby is in a heightened emotional state, she might be more receptive to her mother.

Ashley: I agree with nikki. I’m afraid that if we both go there to see her, she’s gonna feel like we’re ganging up on her, and that’ll just make abby dig in her heels, right?

Victor: Wait a minute. Jack’s presence will do the same.

Ashley: No, because when i speak with abby, I’ll be speaking with her alone.

Nikki: Also, if you stay here, darling, you will have all of your investigative resources at your fingertips. So, if ashley should run into some trouble, you can call in a favor with one of your many connections. I mean, abby will be in a different country, a foreign country, trying to stay under the radar.

Ashley: I think it would be best if we just work together as a team and play to our strengths, right? If she’s in spain, I promise you I will find her and I will bring her home.

Victor: [ Sighs ] So, you want to go to valencia alone? Alright. Call me when you get there, okay?

Ashley: Yes. I promise I will keep you informed. Alright. Here I go. Wish me luck.

Nikki: Don’t hesitate to contact us day or night, and please be careful.

Ashley: I will. It’s gonna be okay.

Nikki: You made the right call. It couldn’t have been easy.

Victor: Well, I gave in because I guess it’s something that ashley wants to do by herself.

Nikki: Well, she won’t be alone. Jack is going, too.

Victor: Well, I have no issue with jack going. He and ashley are close, so that’s alright. I guess I’ll stick around and, uh, help devon in case he needs support with the baby, you know?

Nikki: Well, this is quite a change for you. Normally, you’d want to be controlling everything.

Victor: Yeah. I still am.

Nick: Maybe I should just go to spain myself and find abby on my own.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Devon: Hang on one second.

Nick: Yeah.

Devon: Just one second. Mr. Newman.

Victor: Devon.

Devon: Come in, please.

Devon: Absolutely.

[ Door closes ]

Victor: Hey, son.

Nick: Hey, dad. Devon was just filling me in. What is the latest on abby?

Victor: Ashley’s on the way to spain to try to talk abby out of searching for chance. That’s a hopeless cause, you know? Jack went along to support her.

Nick: Well, I’m surprised you’re not going. I know how important family is to you.

Victor: Very important to me, okay? I’ve decided I can do more good staying at home.

Nick: Oh, yeah. No doubt.

Victor: Talking about family, how’s noah doing now that he’s back home? Is he adjusting or what?

Nick: Fine, as far as I can tell.

Victor: Your mother and i haven’t seen much of him.

Nick: His cellphone number hasn’t changed, dad. You should call him. We’ll wrap up our business later. Let me know if you hear anything about abby.

Devon: Absolutely.

[ Door opens ]

[ Door closes ]

Devon: Is everything okay with you guys?

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ]

Devon: Sensed some tension.

Victor: Yeah, well… yeah. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Devon: You sure about that? I’ll listen if you want to talk about it. I don’t mind.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Nicholas seems to think that i use my children, you know, to my own benefits, that I manipulate them, that I pit them against each other so it creates tension, then I use that tension for my own good. And nothing could be further from the truth. You know? I don’t like this kind of tension between me and my son and my children. I hate it. I grew up without a damn father. Didn’t know my mother very much. And I’ve always been very protective of my children, apparently unbeknownst to them. So this bothers me enormously. But being protective is part of being a father. One day, you’ll find out.

Devon: I can only imagine. I really can. I mean, having — having never been a father myself, I can’t really give you good advice, i guess.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Now you will have a chance. When dominic grows up, you’ll find out, you know?

Devon: [ Exhales sharply ]

Victor: You know that he needs a strong father figure now that chance is no longer around.

Devon: I do. And you know that I would do anything in the world for that boy.

Victor: It makes me happy to hear that.

[ Door opens ]

Noah: [ Breathing heavily ]

Faith: Thought I smelled something.

Noah: [ Grunts ] Yeah, at least I’m getting outside. Admit it — you just woke up.

Faith: Wrong. I’ve been at school and the coffeehouse and done all sorts of things.

Noah: Ah.

Faith: Ew! You’re getting sweat on the sofa. So, what are you gonna do now? Stare up into space the rest of the day?

Noah: You know, I just might.

Faith: Maybe you should tell someone about what’s bugging you.

Noah: So, when did you turn into mom?

Faith: Trust me. If you keep up the couch zombie routine, she’s gonna be on your case even more than she already is.

Noah: [ Scoffs ] I can’t complain too much, considering I brought it on myself. Now, if you couldn’t tell, I’m not great at hiding my feelings.

Faith: Maybe because you’re a terrible liar.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Faith: Which isn’t a bad thing, but if you talk to someone, you can honestly tell mom that you got it off your chest, which might calm her down.

Noah: I can see you’re the expert.

Faith: Remember what my whole last year was like? I’ve got a phd in mom-handling. So if you need a sounding board, I volunteer. No judgment. Plus, I promise I won’t tell anyone. Deal?

Jack: When we find abby, if we find abby, the plan is to convince her to come back to genoa city for dominic’s sake. I don’t want ashley going alone. The situation’s so volatile. Both of them — the stakes are so high. If they need me, I want to be there for them.

Phyllis: Your family’s very lucky to have you. Really. You always go above and beyond for the people you love.

Jack: Thanks.

Sharon: Um [Clears throat] Two coffees, and here’s your sandwiches. I threw in some cookies and some fruit.

Jack: You are the best. Thank you very much.

Sharon: You know, abby’s been through so much. My heart really goes out to her.

Jack: Yeah.

Sharon: I hope you find her.

Jack: Thanks. Ash and I just want to bring her home, where she’s surrounded by friends and family. That way, she can heal.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Jack: Anyway, I got to go. I told ashley I’d meet her at the airport, and I don’t want to keep her waiting.

Phyllis: Bring abby home safe.

Jack: Thanks. I appreciate the support.

Phyllis: What?

Sharon: You tell me.

Phyllis: Um, listen, sharon. I don’t want to play games with you. If you have something to say, just say it.

Sharon: I’m just wondering what’s going on with you and jack because the two of you seem so close — and just a few short days after you and nick called it quits.

Phyllis: What are you implying?

Sharon: I’m just making an observation.

Phyllis: Okay, well, first, um, my relationship with jack is none of your business. Second, you know that jack and i are friends, and he’s been a great friend to me during this breakup with nick, a very, very good friend, as I’m sure you’ve been there for nick, too. And I’m not going off on you, am I? So zip it.

Sharon: Wow, that’s a bit of a vehement reaction to just a simple question. Unless you’ve been asking yourself the same ones.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? I don’t need your analysis, sharon.

Sharon: Well, I would just hate to find out that nick got hurt because you decided to rekindle an old relationship.

Phyllis: That is a cheap shot. I am heartbroken over my breakup with nick. So I think it’s best if we just move on and get on with our lives, okay?

Noah: When I was in london, i met this girl, ended up falling pretty hard. She was an artist, too.

Faith: That must have been great, having so much in common. Kind of like moses and me. You know we’re going out, right?

Noah: Yeah, rey mentioned it.

Faith: We like a lot of the same stuff, especially music, which gave us a good basis to build our friendship on. Plus, it’s fun.

Noah: Yeah, it was definitely like that — for a while, at least. We, uh, were kind of competitive with each other, in a healthy way. We’d critique each other’s work, but then we’d also go to each other’s showings, celebrate the success. Living the dream.

Faith: So, what happened?

Noah: I’m not exactly sure. I think that’s why I’ve felt so preoccupied lately, trying to figure out what went wrong.

Faith: Any thoughts?

Noah: My only guess is i started getting more commissions and more openings, more good reviews than she did. I think she started to resent me for it. Things got ugly. We had some bitter, nasty fights. By that time, I — you know, i was already in love with her. So when she left… I was crushed.

Faith: I’m so sorry, noah. That’s so unfair. You deserve someone who will cheer you on when good things happen, not get all petty and jealous.

Noah: People are complicated. Success is complicated. You think you want it, and then once you get it, you realize that it changes very little. And you’re still the same person you always were, but trying to explain that to somebody who hasn’t made it yet… she accused me of patronizing her and… I really wanted it to work out, too, but she didn’T. So then london just became this place filled with memories that I didn’t want to relive. “We had a fight in that restaurant. She walked out of this showing. We made up on that bridge.” And then one day we just — we just didn’t make up at all.

Faith: So, you can’t stop thinking about this woman because what? You want her back?

Noah: I definitely don’t want all the turmoil back, but… I mostly just — I don’t want to make the same mistakes again.

Faith: Then don’T.

Noah: Wow. Okay. So, it’s that simple. Why didn’t I think of that?

Faith: Okay, look. Maybe instead of stewing about this endlessly, you get off your butt and you come to crimson lights with me. There’s nothing that caffeine and carbs can’t fix.

Noah: [ Chuckles ]

Faith: Deal?

Noah: You know, you’ve gotten really wise in your old age.

[ Laughs ]

Faith: But first shower, or they won’t let you in.

Noah: Okay. Yeah.

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said in tuscany. How you put the brakes on things and told me that you weren’t in the right place to start a new relationship. And at the time, I told you that I was holding out hope that you would come around.

Adam: And now you are not.

Sally: I’m poised to have an incredible career, thanks to you and chloe, and I have worked my tail off for this opportunity. And for once, I don’t want to mess that up. And even though I’m drawn to you…I’ve come to accept having boundaries at work. And I don’t want things to get weird between us. So, I’m glad to be colleagues and friends and to focus on my impending success.

Nick: What’s going on?

Phyllis: Oh, uh, sharon seems to think that we broke up because of jack. I told her to keep her nose out of it. But I think it’s interesting that we’re such a popular couple here in genoa city. Everybody seems to have an opinion as to why we didn’t last. And I think we can agree that that’s nobody’s business but ours, right? And everybody else can keep their nose out of it.

Nick: So, why are you so upset?

Phyllis: Why am I so upset? Because we failed. I failed. And nobody but us should pass judgment. That’s for sure.

Sharon: Methinks she protests too much.

Nick: I’m not gonna talk about this with you, for obvious reasons.

Sharon: Fine. Let’s not talk about phyllis. But I do think we should have a conversation about our son.

Nick: What about him?

Sharon: Well, noah’s been doing a lot of sitting around the house. And it’s not like him to mope. I’m beginning to think this is serious.

Nick: Isn’t any break-up at that age serious?

Sharon: Not necessarily. But, you know, he’s being really vague. I can’t get any details out of him.

Nick: Sometimes that’s the way dudes are, you know? We don’t talk about everything, which is why I don’t want to talk about phyllis with you.

Sharon: Well, your break-up is recent, so that’s understandable. But noah — I don’t know. He’s been home for a little while, and I’m starting to think that whatever happened in london hurt him more than he’s willing to talk about.

Nick: Well, maybe it’s something that he needs to work out on his own. You know, he’s a grown man. He’s a very smart one. He’ll figure it out.

Sharon: Well, as his mom, it’s my instinct to want to help him, no matter how old he is.

Nick: Yeah, something tells me that’s never gonna go away.

Sharon: [ Chuckles ] Let’s hope not.

Tessa: Hi, mariah. Here for your daily pop quiz. What is your favorite thanksgiving pie? Is this painful for you? Because I figured, if it was embarrassing, then you would just have to re– ugh. Oh, god. Delete, delete, delete. That is the definition of “trying too hard.” Oof.

Noah: Hey, you.

Tessa: Hi!

Faith: Hey!

Tessa: Hey! Pull up a chair! Oh, you guys are saving me from further humiliation. It’s so good to see you guys.

Noah: It’s good to see you, too.

Nick: Noah looks okay to me.

Victor: Hey, son.

Adam: I thought you were going to spain with ashley.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: Does this mean you found abby?

Victor: [ Exhales heavily ] Ashley’s on her way to bring her back. But I decided to stay put. There are some things we need to discuss.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Let me guess. You heard from our friend at chanccomm?

Victor: I did, you know? He came groveling, true to form.

Adam: Did he accept our offer?

Victor: Well, he made an offer of his own.

Adam: [ Chuckling ] Oh. Oh, man, this — this has got to be good.

Victor: He said he would step back from chanccomm, if we backed off, and let lily run the place.

Adam: Uh-huh. What does “back off” mean?

Victor: That means no sabotage, no retaliation, no lawsuits.

Adam: [ Inhales deeply ] What do we get out of it?

Victor: What do you think? We watch him resign publicly.

Adam: I can see that you like that idea.

Victor: You bet I do. It has a certain charm to it, doesn’t it, huh?

Adam: So, what’d you say?

Victor: I didn’t say much. Just said that I would consider the proposal.

Adam: So, what do you really intend to do? Because I can’t imagine that you’re actually contemplating accepting this offer.

Ashland: I’m curious, as well.

Victor: Ashland.

Ashland: What are your thoughts about billy’s offer? You have always loved vicks vapors.

Victor: Well, to be honest with you, his offer came quite as a surprise to me. Billy boy willing to step back from chanccomm, provided we allow lily to continue running the company. I didn’t think he had it in him.

Ashland: Humility?

Adam: Hmm. No. Knowing when to fold.

Victor: Exactly. And he doesn’t know when to fold, never has. That punk always plays the wrong hand, you know? He doesn’t know how to quit when he’s ahead.

Adam: I don’t see why we would waste all this work to ruin chanccomm, scoop it up on the cheap, just for the fun of embarrassing billy abbott.

Victor: Son, you don’t understand how long that man has been a pain in my side, okay? I enjoy to see him dangling in the wind. Got it?

Ashland: I had a run-in with lily earlier.

Victor: Oh, yeah?

Ashland: She had no idea that her partner came to you with that proposal. In fact, she suggested that our whole move was based solely on animosity toward billy and that I was being used as a weapon.

Adam: Well, I would say that you are your own best weapon.

Ashland: Exactly. This is personal for all of us. But I’ve already gotten what i want — the pleasure of seeing that jerk twist in the wind after trying to destroy me at my wedding. It’s ironic, isn’t it, that my reputation was saved by being dragged through the mud.

Victor: So you’re feeling quite good about how things are developing, right?

Ashland: Overall, yes. And now I’m happy to repay the favor by going along with anything that the two of you decide.

Victor: So, we will proceed as we have previously agreed upon. We’ll make billy boy think that we’ve accepted his offer. We’ll call a temporary truce and then let him have it.

Adam: So, when lily gives up or jill orders the sale of chanccomm, we’ll buy it at a deep discount.

Victor: Yeah. And billy boy abbott won’t know what hit him.

Tessa: [ Sighs ]

Noah: So, what’s going on with mariah?

Tessa: Well, I was trying to send her a video, but I was failing miserably.

Faith: Why?

Tessa: I was asking her what her favorite pie is. How dumb is that?

Faith: [ Chuckles ] Probably mom’s apple crisp.

Noah: Pumpkin. I could just destroy a pumpkin pie.

[ Laughter ]

Tessa: Well, blueberry for me.

Noah: [ Chuckles ] Alright, next question — spotlight on faith. You’re gonna be in college soon. What do you want to study, kid? Now, fingers crossed we have another artist in the family.

Tessa: Right, because that is an excellent way to make money. You’ve heard the term “starving artist”?

Noah: Hmm. And that’s opposed to the wildly stable life of a musician, right?

Tessa: Ouch.

Faith: Okay, okay. For now, I would rather focus on the present, where my biggest decision is what dessert to have. Reminder — we are here for carbs. What do you want?

Noah: Uh, cinnamon r– no. Brownie. Brownie.

Tessa: Blondie.

Faith: One of each?

Noah: You don’t got to ask me twice.

Faith: Okay. Be right back.

Nick: Hey, kiddo.

Faith: Hey. What’s up?

Sharon: Um, you guys look like you’re having fun. Are you enjoying spending time with your big brother?

Faith: Don’t worry, mom. He’s okay. We had a good talk. He told me about this girl that he was seeing in london. They broke up, and that’s why he’s a little down. But I don’t want to repeat anything that he shared with me in confidence, which I’m sure you can understand.

Sharon: Of course.

Nick: We appreciate the update.

Faith: Sure. Anyway, I’m going to get brownies, so…

Sharon: Well, don’t let us keep you.

Nick: See? Noah’s talking about it.

Sharon: Yeah. Um, that’s a relief.

Nick: I mean, just ’cause he won’t spill his guts to his parents doesn’t mean he won’t open up to someone. What?

Sharon: Our little girl. She’s old enough to be a confidante to her big brother.

Ashley: I’m really happy you’re here. I know I told you I didn’t need you to come, but I’m so glad you did.

Jack: No place I’d rather be.

Ashley: I know it’s a tricky time for you.

Jack: It feels good to hit the pause button on my personal life for a bit.

Ashley: I’m still grateful.

Jack: My focus right now is supporting you and tracking abby. Hey. You alright?

Ashley: Not really. I mean, it’s not gonna be the holiday we thought it would be, right? Everybody gathered around the table celebrating dominic’s first thanksgiving.

Jack: We will have that celebration — don’t you worry — even if it’s not on the actual day. That’s what I intend to be thankful for.

Abby: I’m thankful for you. After 40 wrinkles deepen and skin can get uneven

Noah: I guess we can drop our “trying too hard” act now that it’s just us.

Tessa: How you doing?

Noah: I talked to faith earlier, and it made me feel better. How about you?

Tessa: Up and down. But I’m starting to realize that’s just what it’s like being an adult. There’s always something tough to deal with.

Noah: [ Sighs ] Thanks for being a downer.

[ Both laugh ]

Victor: I think we let him dangle over the fire a little longer.

Adam: That is fine by me.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Oh. Sorry, son. This is about abby, okay?

Victor: No, that’s okay. It’s all covered. Thank you. Ashley? How are you? Where are you?

Ashley: On my way to spain with jack and your security people.

Victor: You are alright?

Ashley: Well, I’m a little worried. I guess that’s only natural. But I am determined to see this through.

Victor: You’ll do just fine, okay? I have every confidence in you.

Ashley: Thank you. I mean, all my instincts are saying that abby has to be in spain, so I will find her. Before anything happens.

Victor: Sweetheart, do me a favor. Just be safe, most of all. And then I will do everything i can do from my end. But please bring our daughter home, okay?

Ashley: I hope you didn’t come here for an update about abby, ’cause i haven’t heard a thing.

Devon: No, I came here to tell you that I have.

Ashley: Is she okay? What did she say?

Devon: She left me a note.

Ashley: “Devon, knowing dominic is safe with you is the only way I can do this. And I do need to do it. Not just for me, but for dom. Please tell him I love him more than anything in the world. And I’m afraid this is gonna take longer than I first thought. Thanks for being there for us. Abby.” But where did she go?

Devon: I think I have an idea.

Abby: If I charter this jet, it is imperative that I have your absolute discretion. You can tell no one that I am taking this flight. Especially my father, victor newman. Whatever your silence costs, i am willing to pay. Round trip to majorca, spain. One passenger flying there, and two coming back.

[ Sighs ]

Phyllis: There’s a reason our marriage didn’t work out.

Jack: Yeah, we went through a lot, more than our share of heartache, but also some great times. Some of the best times in my life. And you are still the most captivating, fascinating woman I have never known…and sometimes so gorgeous, it hurts.

Phyllis: Jack —

Jack: No, let me finish. You are also complicated and frustrating and hot-headed and careless and…

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Jack: But all in all, a pretty spectacular package.

Phyllis: Ah. Well, you have had too much to drink.

Jack: You know, I keep thinking maybe — maybe the fact that we’ve spent so much time together lately, I… maybe the reason I didn’t move on with my romantic life was… ’cause I already was with the most amazing woman I’ve ever known.

Phyllis: [ Exhales sharply ]

Jack: Hey.

Phyllis: Hey! Oh!

Jack: I’m sorry, I did not mean to startle you. I —

Phyllis: No, no, you — you didn’T. I was just thinking about things. I was thinking about work.

Jack: Well, I hope you’re doing better than you were when I ran into you earlier.

Phyllis: Oh. You didn’t come to take my temperature, did you?

Jack: Not to worry, a colleague suggested I meet him here for a quick meeting, but nothing more.

Phyllis: Well, I mean, ’cause I am fine.

Jack: Well, glad to hear it. You — you look…okay.

Phyllis: I am okay. Really, I am. Not that you can’t check on me, because you can check on me. You know, that’s what we do with each other, you know? Because we’re friends.

Jack: Duly noted.

Phyllis: Yeah. Hey, did you happen to see, um…that chanccomm article on ashland?

Jack: Read every word of it.

Phyllis: Yeah, and then that gaines guy recanting his story and chanccomm has to issue a retraction? That’s a mess.

Jack: Yeah, I haven’t talked to billy about it, but I think he got caught up in trying to expose locke’s shady past and, I’m sure, hoped to bring adam and victor down a notch or two. It’s gonna cost him. And lily.

Ashland: I’m confused. You’ve worked yourself into a lather talking about how I’m trying to ruin you and your partner, but if anybody has the right to be upset, it’s me. I’m the victim of your underhanded tactics.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] I think we both know that’s a lie. As much of a lie as gaines saying that the story about your past is not true.

Ashland: You know, a wise person would never have willingly staked their company’s reputation on the word of a vindictive blackmailer, which is exactly what billy did.

Lily: You weaponized gaines and aimed him directly at chanccomm.

Ashland: And the two of you pulled the trigger.

Lily: Someone hacked into our server.

Ashland: And got ahold of a story billy had ready to go? If the hacking even happened, it only expedited its release. Since you’re the cautious and the savvy one, I imagine you tried to dissuade your partner, but he’s impossible to control, which is why I chose to remain alone at the top when I was building my empire. You tether yourself to the wrong person, you both go down together.

Billy: What are you waiting for? I told you what you wanted to hear, victor. You won.

Victor: And?

Billy: I walk away from the company that I poured my heart and soul into. You, adam, and ashland, you promise to leave chanccomm and lily alone. Let her run it on her own, free of any litigation or retaliation or sabotage of any kind. I’m offering you my head on a platter, man. Is that still not enough for you?

Phyllis: Bad news?

Jack: No, my meeting was rescheduled. Oh, dear, that means it looks i am just here for you.

Phyllis: Well, that’s not true, unless you had esp and you knew your meeting was gonna get canceled. And we both know that’s not true.

Phyllis: You doubt my ability to see the future? Oh, ye of little faith.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Well, you are very good at many things, but being a prophet is not one of them.

Jack: You want me to prove it?

Phyllis: Yeah, prove it.

Jack: Okay. Things have been strange between us. I think you feel it, too. If we weren’t self-conscious enough because of feelings that I confessed, now that you and nick are no longer together, it makes things even more awkward.

Phyllis: I’m not awkward. I’m not.

Jack: You’re interrupting my prophecy.

Phyllis: Okay.

Jack: I see a time in the not-too-distant future where things between us will go back to normal. We will laugh and talk and challenge each other and question each other and come to each other with advice without a moment of awkwardness. And we will go on with our lives like we did before I opened my big mouth. I see it clear as day.

Phyllis: Uh —

Jack: Have a good day.

Devon: I mean, I can’t really talk because when people told me that my wife was missing and presumed dead overseas, I got on a plane and went looking for her.

Ashley: Even after everybody told you that it was incredibly dangerous and the most important thing you could do is to be present for your child?

Devon: Believe me, I know this isn’t logical for abby.

Ashley: You’re right, she’s thinking with her heart.

Devon: Yeah. She obviously thinks that this is what she needs to do to heal, and that’s go and see for herself if chance is alive.

Ashley: Or face the reality that he’s not.

Devon: We need to have somebody looking in valencia for us.

Ashley: [ Sighs ] I was so sure that we convinced her it was too dangerous.

Devon: Well, she thinks it’s worth the risk.

Ashley: Well, I sure as hell don’T. We’ve got to find her before it’s too late.

Victor: This proposal of yours is quite intriguing. It shows qualities that I never thought you possessed. You’re actually willing to sacrifice for the sake of others.

Billy: Look, I dragged lily into my plan to threaten you and adam. My choice, my fault. I take full responsibility. You take me out of the equation. You let lily run chanccomm on her own. She will do it with integrity. She doesn’t need to be punished for the choices that I’ve made.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Victor: Alright, billy boy, i will consider your proposal.

Billy: You do realize that everything I’ve done here, all of it, was to protect your daughter.

Victor: Now you’re warming the cockles of my heart, billy boy. I’ve got some other business to attend to. Why don’t you show yourself out?

Lily: Do you really think a lawsuit is gonna stop us? This is not over, locke, not by a long shot.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] I think we both know it is. Your news outlet published libelous statements about me, statements that tarnished my name and my achievements.

Lily: I’m sorry, do you think that now that you’re married to victoria you’re some kind of saint? Your name has always been associated with heartless behavior.

Ashland: Well, the difference is that those other stories about me that were published were true.

Lily: This is true, too, even if you want to claim otherwise.

Ashland: You failed the first lesson of journalism. You relied on one source for all of your information — a man who admitted that his motivation was purely out of hatred and — and jealousy. And he recanted it, which means my lawsuit is anything but frivolous.

Lily: Okay, if you don’t want to admit the truth, that’s fine, although it’s pretty obvious what is true, given the fact that you told victoria the exact same story that gaines told us.

Ashland: Oh, what makes you think that I did that?

Lily: Billy and I were there. We talked to victoria.

Ashland: Were any of these conversations on the record?

Lily: No, of course not.

Ashland: Well, then who’s to say they actually happened?

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Okay, look, if you want to play these games, that is fine, but honestly, I’m disappointed. I really expected more from you.

Ashland: Really? You just got finished telling me how despicable I am.

Lily: You know, I’m actually really surprised that you even went along with adam and victor’s plot. I mean, they used your past as their weapon. I mean, I really didn’t think the locke ness monster would do something like that.

Ashland: Nobody uses me.

Lily: Well, I guess they do now. ‘Cause you know this isn’t about business, right? This is about victor’s long-standing battle with billy.

Ashland: Ah.

Lily: So why are you going along with it?

Ashland: I’m not under victor’s thumb, if that’s what you’re implying. I’m simply trying to squelch an accusation that paints me in a terrible light in the eyes of the world and, more importantly, in the eyes of my son, and you would do the same if you were in my position.

Lily: Do not compare yourself to me.

Ashland: I admire your bravery, so I’ll give you some free advice. This isn’t about victor’s hatred of your partner. It’s about billy’s inability to let go of victoria.

Lily: He has.

Ashland: Open your eyes. Billy wasn’t doing the world a favor by publishing a story about my so-called checkered past. No. He did it for an audience of one. You see, billy is so determined that I look like the villain in victoria’s eyes that he will go to any extreme, even publishing a story — a ridiculous story — without doing due diligence. And if you’re really concerned about protecting chanccomm — and yourself — cut him loose and move forward on your own.

Billy: Bad news travels fast. I’m sure you couldn’t wait to get over here.

Jack: Believe me, this is the last thing I want to share, but I just learned it this morning and I think you need to know.

Billy: What? What happened?

Jack: There’s no easy way to say this. There was an explosion at chance’s safe house. He is missing and presumed dead.

Billy: What? You sure that he was in there?

Jack: They found some of his personal effects at the site — his watch, his wedding ring.

Billy: Geez, jack. I got to be honest, with everything he’s survived, I kind of thought that he was invincible.

Jack: Yeah, I think we all did.

Billy: I never for a second thought that he wasn’t gonna come back here and raise his kid. How’s abby?

Jack: She’s struggling. She’s really struggling. So much so that she’s left dominic with devon while she tries to find a way to put her life in motion again.

Billy: How’s nina? Have you talked to my mom, by chance?

Jack: I haven’t talked to either of them, but I’m sure they are both shattered.

Billy: Yeah. I’ll reach out to abby.

Jack: Good.

Billy: My mom left me a few messages, but I haven’t been able to get back to her yet. Now I know that the first couple were probably because of this, and the other ones are because she’s the ceo of this company and she’s probably wondering what the hell just happened. And I know you know, so let’s have it. I’m sure you have plenty to say on the matter.

Victor: So, when did you receive this?

Devon: Right after I spoke with mrs. Newman. I went home. I was upstairs with dominic for just a little while, and when i came back down, abby must have slipped it under my door.

Ashley: Did you speak with anyone that saw her?

Devon: I checked with the doorman, and he said he didn’t see her go in or out, which means she either used the back door to the building or she sent somebody.

Victor: So she obviously didn’t want to be seen.

Ashley: That makes me feel even worse because, clearly, she has planned this escape. She has you taking care of the baby. She sneaks out of here before anybody’s awake. She must’ve felt so alone, like she couldn’t be honest with anybody.

Victor: Because she knew if she had told us what she intended to do, we would have stopped her, which is what we’re gonna do now. If you’re on medicare, remember,

Lauren: Just the woman i wanted to see.

Phyllis: Oh, again? Why? What have I done now?

Lauren: Nothing, but I heard that your escape club is the perfect place to relax and unwind and have your greatest fantasies come true. I’ve read that in your ad.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah. Yeah [Speaks indistinctly] Yeah. Is this for you?

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] No. It’s for one of my buyers. She’s coming into town, and i thought I’d treat her.

Phyllis: Oh, she must be a great buyer, because you’re rewarding her like this.

Lauren: I know. Well, she’s one of the best. And between, you know, taking care of fenmore’s needs and raising her family, she doesn’t have a lot of time for herself, so I thought maybe you and i could toss some ideas around and give her an afternoon to remember.

Phyllis: Oh, for sure. What does she like?

Lauren: Wow, that’s a really good question.

Phyllis: Oh.

Lauren: I have no idea. Think I need to call her.

Phyllis: It’s hard to know what any of us like, isn’t it? What we think we like or what others think we should have. Or what’s bad for us.

Lauren: I don’t think we’re talking about the escape club anymore.

Phyllis: What? Why would you say that?

Lauren: Well, are you having second thoughts about nick? Do you think you want to give it another try?

Phyllis: Oh, no, mnh-mnh. It’s definitely over. It’s over. Um…I just think being single has me off-kilter, that’s all.

Lauren: Well, and I think i know why. Because it’s very hard for you to let people in, but once they’re in your heart, you have a hard time letting them go.

Phyllis: Oh, there are a lot of people I’ve let out of here, trust me.

Lauren: Yeah, I’m sure, but…I know you’ll always care about nick, just like you’ve never stopped caring about jack.

Phyllis: You know what? I have a great idea for your buyer. Just give a second. I’m gonna look into it.

Lauren: Phyllis?

Jack: Okay, as long as you brought it up, what the hell happened?

Billy: Well, I’ll tell you this much, traci could sure write one hell of a book about this story. Guarantee it would be a best-seller. Corporate intrigue, sabotage, revenge — it’s got it all.

Jack: This blackmailer, this gaines — you put all your faith in him? He sounds like a pretty shady character.

Billy: Yeah, jack, you know what? I really don’t want to get into the gory details right now. All I’m gonna say is that i thought I had it under control, and I didn’T. But everything in that story is 100% true.

Jack: Even though he’s on record denying it?

Billy: All part of victor and adam’s elaborate scheme to bring me to my knees.

Jack: Okay, maybe you better share some of those gory details with me, then.

Billy: I brought gaines to tuscany with me for the sole reason to make sure that victoria knew the truth about the man that she was gonna marry.

Jack: You did? How come I never saw him?

Billy: Because I didn’t want anyone to see him until I was able to talk to victoria. Victor and adam found him and they flipped him to their side. Threatening him, giving him money, probably both. Jesse gaines cares about his bank account more than anything else.

Jack: And yet this is the guy you aligned yourself with.

Billy: Yes, jack! It was an error in judgment, alright? What else do you want me to say? You saw the retraction, did you not?

Jack: In today’s world, that is almost meaningless. Come on, the story is out there. Millions of sites have covered it, and the damage done to chanccomm you can’t undo.

Billy: You don’t think that i know that? I screwed up, okay? I made a deal with a double-dealing son of a bitch, and I got played. I never intended to release that article. It was simply a threat to make sure that victor and adam stopped coming after my company. And it blows my mind that nobody understands that the only thing I was trying to do was find out the truth. They’re all criminals! I gambled. It’s what you do in business, right? I rolled the dice and I lost.

Devon: After I found that note, I gave my private investigator, denise tolliver, a call and put her on the case to find abby.

Victor: Well, I’ll put my people on it, as well. Together, we’ll find her, okay?

Ashley: Maybe they’ll find out that she never left town. Though, actually, every instinct in my body is telling me that she’s probably left the country.

Victor: It just occurs to me she may have chartered a plan to cover her tracks.

Devon: She could be in the air right now.

Victor: I don’t give a damn where she is — spain or here. We’ll find her.

Devon: Well, don’t you think we need to put somebody in valencia?

Ashley: Well, it can’t be you, devon. I mean, abby’s counting on you to stay with the baby.

Devon: No, absolutely, i wouldn’t — wouldn’t dream of leaving him.

Victor: I have some business to attend to, but I can easily rearrange my schedule.

Ashley: That won’t be necessary. I’m going. How did olay top expensive creams?

Billy: Thank you.

Jack: I am, however, deeply concerned about your gambling analogy.

Billy: Are you kidding me? Jack, my life is falling apart. I’m not really concerned about my choice of —

Jack: Gambling has been a major problem in your life, billy, and I’m not just talking about the money you lost playing poker. You were ceo of jabot, you were reckless, you took great chances, you took giant risks that you knew would pay off, only they didn’t, and you lost your job.

Billy: And you see history repeating itself, like I haven’t learned a thing.

Jack: You have put everything that you and lily have built here in jeopardy because you’re still willing to take those crazy chances. Lily deserves more than that. So does jill, so do your kids.

Billy: I’m gonna ask you to tread lightly, jack.

Jack: You are on the verge of losing everything you have, billy. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you, you have run out of second chances. You’ve got to find some way to turn this thing around.

Billy: I already have. I just did that.

Jack: Wait, what does that mean?

Billy: I went to victor and told him that he won. Told him that I will step down as long as he agrees to leave chanccomm and lily alone.

Lily: Sorry, you did what?

Victor: But why would you put yourself into the same danger that abby is in? It doesn’t make any sense.

Ashley: I can bring somebody from your security team. Preferably someone who speaks spanish and knows the lay of the land.

Victor: [ Sighs ] You really don’t want me to go, do you?

Ashley: It’s not about that, victor, honestly. I think I have a better chance of convincing her to come back home. I can appeal to her, mother-to-mother.

Victor: Alright. I guess that makes sense. I’ll call my people to get the jet ready, and then you can take off for spain as soon as you’re packed, okay?

Ashley: Thank you.

Victor: Okay.

[ Cellphone rings ] It’s my private investigator. Yes? What? Okay, I’ll be right there.

Devon: What did he say?

Victor: Apparently, they found someone fitting abby’s description at a restaurant right next to the motel outside of town.

Devon: Really? Well, I’d like to go, if that’s okay.

Victor: Yeah.

Ashley: I’ll stay here with the baby and get packed.

Victor: I’ll keep you posted.

Ashley: Okay. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Devon: Thank you, ashley.

Ashley: Hi, my love. Hi, my love.

Jack: I’m gonna get out of the way and leave you two alone.

Billy: Probably a good idea.

Lily: Please tell me that i misheard you.

Billy: No, you didn’T. I went straight to the source of the problem.

Lily: To victor.

Billy: Enough is enough, lily.

Lily: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Look, we both know that I am his target, okay? You don’t need to get caught up in all this mess. So I told him that I’m gonna walk away from chanccomm, leave you in charge, as long as he calls off the dogs.

Lily: Billy, what the hell were you thinking? You cannot make a unilateral decision like that. Look, was this supposed to be, like, a noble gesture or something? There is nothing noble about making a decision that so profoundly affects chanccomm without even talking to me about it first.

When you have nausea,

Devon: I think we’re too late. There’s nothing here. There’s no bags or anything.

Victor: Not really surprising. I guess she’s trying to stay a step ahead of us.

Devon: Well, yeah, the clerk said that she — she paid with cash and checked in under an alias, so I’d say so.

Victor: You know, the only good thing about people running away is that they make a mistake, they slip up.

Devon: Well, do you think she left something behind?

Victor: Let’s take a look.

Devon: Hey, hang on a second.

Victor: What?

Devon: There’s something right here. It’s a military pin.

Victor: I’ll be damned. I bet you that belongs to chance.

Devon: I think it has to belong to chance, right?

Victor: Oh, my god.

Devon: Housekeeping hasn’t been in here yet. This wouldn’t just be hanging around like that.

Victor: That just confirms my worst fears. She probably thinks that chance is still alive.

Ashley: This is your lion. That’s right. That’s your lion, your friend.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

[ Doorbell rings ] It’s open.

Jack: Hey, I hope I’m not interrupting.

Ashley: No, come on in.

Jack: I just came to — oh, look who’s here. Hey, dominic. God, isn’t he a cutie?

Ashley: Isn’t he just the cutest?

Jack: I came by to tell you i went to see billy and tell him the news about chance.

Ashley: Thank you for doing that.

Jack: And I wanted to check on abby.

Ashley: She’s not here. She’s gone. She left a note for devon saying that she had something she had to do and it was gonna take her longer than she anticipated.

Jack: Well, it had to be important for her to leave this little bundle of joy for even a minute. Any idea where she is?

Ashley: Uh, yeah, she’s looking for chance. She doesn’t believe that he died in that attack on the safe house, jack.

Jack: Oh, god. Clearly, she needs more answers than she’s getting from the state department.

Ashley: Exactly. I’m going to spain to find her and bring her back.

Jack: Wait, you’re going alone?

Ashley: Well, I have somebody from victor’s security team. I have them.

Jack: You have me, too. I’ll go with you.

Ashley: I don’t need you to, jack.

Jack: No, I’m sure you’re in good hands, but, no, I’ll come along. I can help. It might be good to have somebody else along. I’m not taking no for an answer. Besides, it’s probably a good time for me to get out of town.

Ashley: Why?

Jack: I need a change of pace.

Ashley: What are you running from?

Jack: You have bigger problems to worry about than my personal life.

Ashley: Okay. Alright. You’re avoiding my question, so now I’m suspicious. Tell me what’s wrong.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Alright, so I put this list together for your buyer. It’s guaranteed to blow her mind.

Lauren: Ooh! I trust your judgment.

Phyllis: Ah, no one’s said that to me before.

Lauren: Huh. Good. Let’s go back to discussing what we were talking about before you scampered off.

Phyllis: Uh, excuse me, i don’t scamper.

Lauren: Really?

Phyllis: Hmm.

Lauren: What do you call it? You had the strangest reaction after I said jack’s name.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] It’s because I’ve been having all of these thoughts that i can’t get out of my mind ever since I had this conversation with amanda, telling her about my history with jack and nick.

Lauren: And what on earth did she say to you that got you so worked up?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] She said that my relationship with jack is not entirely platonic.

Lauren: That’s actually very astute. It’s never been platonic.

Phyllis: I did not cheat on nick.

Lauren: Oh, I don’t mean to imply that you did. It’s just that you and jack could never be just pals. You could just never be.

Phyllis: Why not?

Lauren: Because he’s handsome, generous, charismatic jack who thinks the world of you, and you admire and appreciate him. Honey, you have been through so much with and without him, and it’s just always been special between the two of you. Undeniable, unbreakable.

Phyllis: Oh, gosh. I just keep on thinking of us and — oh, gosh. I just don’t know what to do with these thoughts that just keep on popping into my head.

Lauren: You know, I, uh… I’ve been able to talk to him a little bit lately, and not to break confidence, but he has been saying that he’s missing having someone special in his life. And for him, you are the golden standard.

Phyllis: Wait, you’re not implying that jack and I should get back together.

[ Chuckles ] You’re not implying that. That’s ludicrous. That’s ludicrous, given all of our history.

Lauren: No, I — well [Chuckles] You two did love each other enough to get married twice. You’ve never been able to be completely out of each other’s lives, so, yeah, you’re right. That’s no sign that there’s residual feeling.

Phyllis: We’re friends. We have a very special friendship.

Lauren: Mm-hmm. And, you know, now that I think back, you were so determined to prove that sally was up to something. Are you sure that it was summer you were protecting?

Phyllis: Oh, oh, seriously? Um, I was protecting you and your company, as well.

Lauren: Uh-huh, and jack.

Phyllis: Yeah, and jack because sally’s horrible and she should never be with someone like jack.

Lauren: And you weren’t just a little bit jealous?

Phyllis: Oh, jealous? Um…are you serious? Really? Is that where you’re going? Jealous.

Lauren: Come on. I love you guys.

Phyllis: [ Exhales sharply ] I — I don’t know what it is between me and jack. I don’t know what it is. It is a very special connection. That’s all. Oh, my god. What if I do want more than friendship with jack?

[ Sighs ]

Lauren: Wow. That is quite an admission.

Phyllis: I don’t know what to do with all these thoughts and these feelings, if anything.

Lauren: Okay, well, I think you need to take time to find out where these feelings are coming from. I mean, you just ended things with nick, and you’ve been spending a lot of time with jack, crying on those very comforting shoulders, so of course you would have all these complicated emotions.

Phyllis: Yeah, I don’t even know what to do with them. You know, I hate them.

Lauren: Can I just say one thing?

[ Sighs ] You and jack are in a really good place. I would hate to see either one of you hurt, so proceed with caution.

Ashley: Tell me what’s wrong. I know it’s not business because I read the quarterly report. Congratulations, by the way.

Jack: Thank you.

Ashley: So then it’s personal?

Jack: And private.

Ashley: Private.

[ Chuckles ] That’s funny. You’re not back with sally, are you?

Jack: No, of course I’m not.

Ashley: [ Sighs ] Thank god. Sounds like it has to be somebody who’s problematic, though.

Jack: Nick and phyllis have decided to break things off, and it’s stirred up some emotions.

Ashley: No, no, no, no, no! Please don’t tell me you’re rekindling that romance.

Jack: Did I say that?

Ashley: You don’t have to say a thing. I can see it in your eyes, jack.

Jack: I’m sorting out how i feel.

Ashley: Okay, as you sort, could you remind yourself of the hell she’s put you through. I mean, really, every time she’s broken up with you. I’m not trying to be mean. I just can’t take it. I can’t take seeing you —

Jack: Thank you, sis. I appreciate your concern.

Ashley: I’m not done lecturing you, jackie.

Jack: No, I’m sure you’re not, but look what time it is, and I got to get home and pack some things for this trip.

Ashley: Okay. I’m just happy it’s a long flight. It’s gonna give me lots of time to knock some sense into you.

Jack: Don’t waste your energy on me. Abby has far bigger problems than I do right now.

Ashley: True.

Jack: I’ll see you later.

Ashley: Alright.

[ Huffs ] Oh, my sweetheart. You miss your mama? I’m gonna go to spain, honey. I’m gonna find your mommy and I’m gonna bring her back home. I promise.

Victor: Grief can certainly tear you up inside, can’t it? And you contemplate doing things you never thought you would.

Devon: Well, yeah, you think that finally find the person you’re gonna spend the rest of your life with, and they’re snatched away from you with no warning at all. Feels impossible to go on.

Victor: I remember how difficult it was for you after hilary passed.

Devon: Yeah, I do, too, but I’ll tell you one thing, it doesn’t compare to being left with a baby to take care of, like abby.

Victor: Let’s just hope that ashley finds her quickly and brings her home.

Devon: And I know that she’s doing what she feels like she needs to do right now by trying to bring her husband back home, but she has a child who needs her more than anything. And to not how this is gonna play out, I’m really worried for him.

Victor: This is all very upsetting. Let’s go.

Lily: I cannot believe that you did this. We’re supposed to be partners, and you went behind my back.

Billy: I thought that you would be relieved. Honestly, lily, I can see what this is doing to you, okay? I was trying to do the right thing.

Lily: Right, by going to victor.

Billy: What I proposed to him would take the pressure off of you and our company.

Lily: How? Because he — he agreed or he gave you his word that he’s gonna stop legal action?

Billy: He said that he was gonna consider it, and i honestly feel like he was taking it seriously.

Lily: Right. Oh, my god, yes, because you’re right, he’s so trustworthy.

Billy: Yeah, what else do you want me to do? Look, I’m hoping that he sees me humbled, with my face in the dirt, and it’s too tempting for him to resist.

Lily: Billy, even if he agrees and you resign, it doesn’t change anything. He might not come after me personally, but he will do anything he can to use the situation to his advantage. We are vulnerable to attack right now. Adam and victor, they want to dismantle us and scoop up the pieces for themselves. That has not changed. The only thing that has is that you have now left me on my own to fend off the vultures by myself.

Devon: Mr. Newman. Hello.

Victor: My goodness. Thank you for coming by.

Devon: Oh, yeah.

Victor: How was the first overnight with our little boy?

Devon: Couldn’t have been better.

Victor: Yeah?

Devon: It really couldn’t have been better. Yeah, no, it’s — despite everything that’s going on in his world around him, he was very, very happy at my place.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Look at him. Well, thank you for bringing by my grandson to see me.

Devon: Yeah, absolutely. Any time.

Victor: I know we’re all trying to do the best under the circumstances.

Devon: Yeah.

Victor: Ashley now tells me that abby may have left town, you know, or at least she left the house.

Devon: Yeah, I heard that. I heard that same thing. And, you know, when she dropped him off, she mentioned to me that she was considering leaving town.

Victor: [ Exhales sharply ] Very concerned about her state of mind.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ] Chance. I had to get out of that house. Felt like I was suffocating. Everyone hovering over me like i was a piece of glass about to shatter.

[ Sighs ] I just — I had to go somewhere, somewhere where I could understand my thoughts and someplace where I could focus on you. I…brought this box because i know it’s filled with things that mean a lot to you. And I thought that if I brought it, it would help me feel your presence.

[ Sighs ]

Lily: Okay. Gonna hit publish.

Billy: Just wait. Are we sure?

Lily: Yes, yes, we’ve been through this. We showed the words to the lawyers. Everyone’s in agreement. I mean, this is our best option.

Billy: Just hard to believe that after pulling an all-nighter, those are the three best lines that we have.

Lily: I know. Well, I mean, I can read it to you again if you want and you can see if you want to add anything. Yeah?

Billy: Yeah.

Lily: Okay. “Chancellor communications did not intend to publish yesterday’s exposé of ashland locke. We were victims of an illegal hack, and the article was published without our knowledge or approval. We are investigating the security breach and regret the error.”

Billy: You know what this means, don’t you?

Lily: I know, I know. It just looks like we’re trying to save ourselves, but we have to, okay? I mean, this puts on record that, you know, we were hacked and this can help cover us from any possible lawsuits.

Billy: So what is it about me that makes me want to double-down on this? Everything in that article is true about ashland’s past. We can stick it to adam and victor and ashland by telling the truth, by standing by the story.

Lily: I know, but you know why we can’t do that. We don’t have any way to prove it. It’s just gonna make chanccomm look even more irresponsible. Okay, listen, we can’t wait anymore. We have to publish this, okay?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah.

Lily: [ Sighs ] We did the right thing, alright? Even though we were hacked, we’re a media company, and as co-ceos, the responsibility lies with us.

Rey: I couldn’t agree more.

Ashland: You seem pleased. Does that mean what I think it means?

Devon: I don’t know, I’m just worried that I — I may have played a part in abby taking off.

Victor: Why do you say that? How so?

Devon: Well, because I — i shared with her my past experiences on grief, and i tried to get her to understand the importance of not only just, you know, relying and leaning on the support system that she has around her but to really take time for herself. And now I’m wondering if that’s what she’s doing. Is she taking time for herself by leaving time in private and not telling anybody?

Victor: I really am a little upset that she didn’t come to me with my grandson. I mean, nikki and I would have taken very good care of him.

Devon: Oh, I mean, yeah, of course, no doubt you would. And I — so you know, I had no idea that she was gonna do what she did and leave the baby like that. I was as surprised as anybody.

Victor: I’m sure you were. But I understand why she did come to you. You know, you’re very good with the boy. And besides that, you were there when he was born.

Devon: It’s true, and I also promised to always be there for her and the baby.

Victor: I want to thank you for what you have done for my daughter and for my grandson, okay?

Devon: Of course.

Victor: However, entrusting you with an infant, I mean, you’re gonna have to change diapers, perhaps, you know?

Victor: I mean, this is putting a lot of responsibility on you.

Devon: No, I understand. I do, and I assure you that I’m up for it.

Victor: Yeah?

Devon: I really am. I am more than happy to take care of dominic while abby takes care of herself. And she’s left me with everything that I could need, and she’s having the nanny come, so we’re okay.

Victor: Well, as I said — but what?

Devon: But it’s abby taking off like she has without telling anybody, it’s — I’m worried.

Victor: Well, she has a lot of trust and faith in you, as well she should, you know? But I’m concerned… concerned about her state of mind. I don’t think she’s thinking clearly.

Devon: Yeah.

Faith: You met dominic?

Moses: Yeah, finally.

Faith: When?

Moses: This morning, before i went to school.

Faith: Uh, wait, where was this?

Moses: At devon’s place. Dominic’s supposed to be staying with us for a while.

Faith: Seriously? For how long?

Moses: I don’t know all the details, just that abby can’t handle taking care of him right now.

Faith: Oh, no. I wonder what that means. My aunt abby went through so much to have her baby. She wouldn’t have just handed him over like this unless she was a total wreck.

Abby: I remember helping pin this on you when you were putting on your dress blues. I stuck my finger, and then you took the pin and you stuck yours, too. You said that it was our blood oath. That we would always be there for each other, no matter what. I believe you then, and i believe you still. Oh, wow. This is from your time in iraq. You downplayed it. My modest hero. But I know it means a lot to you because it is here in this box. All of these pictures. Who are these people? They must be from your time in iraq, but you haven’t told me much about your time there. It’s almost like you locked it away. Look, I know that I told everyone that I accepted the fact that you were gone, but… I just — I can’T. I can’t stop this feeling in my heart that you are out there somewhere…alive.

[ Sighs ]

Billy: Rey, I really don’t have the time or the patience for more baseless accusations right now.

Rey: Oh, you got it all wrong. I’m here about an accusation that adam made. He said that you were trying to blackmail him and victor, threatening to release that article about ashland locke unless they backed off your company.

Billy: You got to be kidding. This is one big plot by victor and adam to sabotage our company.

Rey: Well, it looks like you made good on your threat. I saw you published the article.

Billy: My e-mail was hacked, and a message was sent to one of our reporters, giving authorization to release a story that we never intended to publish. You should check our website right now. There’s a full retraction on there, vetted by our lawyers. But you’re sitting here telling me that adam is accusing me of blackmail.

Lily: Okay, rey, you have to explain where this is coming from and why you’re taking adam seriously.

Rey: Adam actually has a recording of you confronting him and threatening to release that article unless they back off chanccomm.

Billy: Well, adam can claim whatever he wants. Newmans are the real criminals here. Most bladder leak pads were similar.

Rey: Well, unfortunately for you…adam gave me the recording.

Billy: Honestly, adam, I’m a little bit concerned for you. And I’m gonna be generous. I’m gonna take it easy. We have one of our best reporters crafting the story as we speak. But I won’t publish it if…

Adam: If?

Billy: …You, victor, and ashland cease all operations of attacking chanccomm. It’s as simple as that. That’s taken out of context. What you’re listening to right there is a — a business negotiation, and that is not admissible in court. I did not give them authorization to record me.

Rey: There’s more. There’s a video sent by jesse gaines that supports their claim of blackmail. Do you need to see it to refresh your memory?

Lily: Okay, okay, this is enough. Is this an official interrogation? I mean, do we have to call lawyers here? Like, what exactly do you want, rey?

Billy: Hits just keep on coming, don’t they? Newmans have covered all their bases. So what now, rey, you here to arrest me?

Adam: Well, welcome back.

Ashland: Thank you.

Adam: You look energized. Hope that glow isn’t all about besting billy. I hope there was some good news with your trip to the clinic in peru.

Ashland: I was put on an experimental protocol, and I’ve already received a full regimen of the treatment.

Adam: Well, I am glad to hear that. I’m sure victoria’s relieved, as well.

Ashland: Yes, we’re both feeling very positive. I’m actually happier for her than I am for myself. You’ll never get her to admit it, but this illness has taken quite a toll on her.

Adam: I’m sure it has. Well, my sister’s obviously very much in love.

Ashland: That makes two of us. I’ve been keeping up on everything going on around here, and it looks like it’s all on track.

Adam: Victor and I have done our part, so next move is yours.

Ashland: I’ve already set it in motion. I almost feel bad kicking billy when he’s down. Almost.

Adam: Almost.

Victor: I texted her. And abby is not returning any of my calls. I mean, do you remember anything she might have said that would leave us a clue as to where she went?

Devon: Not about where she was going. The only thing she said to me is that she was considering getting out of town so she can clear her head. But you remember that just a few days ago, she was talking about flying to valencia, spain.

Victor: Yeah, but wait a minute, I thought you had talked her out of that and that she was beginning to accept the notion that chance was gone.

Devon: I hope that we did, but what if we didn’t and that’s what she’s gone and done?

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: Oh, devon, so good to see you.

Devon: Hey.

Nikki: Is everything alright with the baby?

Devon: Oh, yeah, yeah. He’s just taking a nap right now.

Nikki: So, what’s going on? I can tell that you’re both concerned about something.

Victor: Yeah, well, abby has taken off without telling anyone where she has gone.

Devon: We’re both worried that she hasn’t accepted chance’s death the way we hoped.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Well, now I’m worried, too. Victor, isn’t there some way you can find out where she is?

Victor: Well, she didn’t take the newman jet. But I guess I’ll have my people find out if she took any commercial airline.

Devon: And you know what? I’m gonna do some digging myself.

Victor: Okay. This has got me worried. Let’s keep in touch, okay?

Devon: Absolutely.

Nikki: Oh, devon, wait. I’d like to talk to you for a minute if you don’t mind.

Abby: Come on, chance, talk to me. Tell me how these things can bring me to you. This medal is for bravery, and now I’m the one who’s supposed to be brave. How could you have just left us like this?

Chance: I didn’t deserve this medal. Someday, I want to give it to the people who really deserve it.

Abby: Oh. That’s right. You said this was for a rescue mission, that you transported troops back to the base after a bomb went off. You said that you weren’t the real hero that day.

Abby: You said the real heroes that day were the medics who saved so many lives in that field hospital.

Chance: Errol and kim — they treated me like their son. They deserved that medal.

Abby: That’s right, you said there was a couple and they were medics in your unit in iraq, and they treated you like family. You said that one day, you wanted to give this to them in person.

Chance: They would do anything for me.

Abby: You said you kept in touch with them, even after they retired, but to where? The letters. Letters.

Nikki: Oh, he’s sleeping. Hi, sweet boy. Well, please have a seat.

Devon: Sure.

Nikki: Victor tells me that you’re taking care of dominic basically all on your own.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Nikki: I really admire what you’re doing. That’s a lot of responsibility to take on.

Devon: Yeah, it is. Are you worried about me?

Nikki: Oh, are you kidding? To the contrary. I know that you’re wonderful with the baby, and I’ve told victor as much. It’s really very kind and brave.

Devon: I mean, you know that dominic and abby are both my family now, so…

Nikki: I want you to know that you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Just ask if you need help. Single parenthood is not easy.

Devon: Yeah, I know, but I’m not alone.

Nikki: Well, no, I know that amanda just moved in and moses has been living with you.

Devon: Right, yeah, and they’re both very, very helpful, very helpful, very supportive. Although I have no intention on leaning on them for anything. I’m good. I got it under control.

Nikki: I’m sure that you do. But you’re also very busy running a company, and everybody needs help. It really does take a village.

Devon: Yeah, that’s very true, but you know that abby also has arranged for the nanny to come and help me, too.

Nikki: Oh, that’s good.

Devon: Yeah.

Nikki: But still, I want you to think of me as another resource. I’m — I’m here to help with anything. Just call on me if you need me.

Devon: Absolutely, of course.

Nikki: We don’t know where abby is or how long she’ll be gone, but if you really want to be there for dominic, you need to know that you have a lot of support around you, just in case you need to keep it up for a while.

Devon: Yeah.

Moses: Man, I mean, I knew devon had helped out by becoming a donor, but I had no idea about abby losing her first child.

Faith: It was terrible. She was so crushed.

Moses: That’s so sad. I mean, she finally gets her happy, healthy baby, and then loses her husband.

Faith: Yeah. She’s so devastated by it that she can’t even take care of the baby that she and chance wanted so much. It’s like she lost dominic, too.

Moses: Well, if it makes you feel better, dominic’s doing okay. Devon’s in full-on dad mode.

Faith: That’s incredible that he’d just drop everything to help a friend like that.

Moses: Devon’s the best. He’s been trying to fill in as a father figure for me since he knows what it’s like growing up without a dad, and I’m sure he’ll be there for dominic, too, since he kind of is his dad now.

Faith: Dominic never met chance. He’ll never know or remember the father that he lost. But with abby, it’s different. Who knows how long it’ll take for her to get over this, if she ever does.

Moses: Yeah.

Faith: [ Sighs ]

Rey: I’m not here to arrest you.

Lily: Then what is this about?

Rey: I have to investigate these dueling accusations. I want to be completely thorough before I present anything to the da.

Billy: Well, I appreciate you not jumping to conclusions.

Rey: In fact, I’d like to see any proof you have of the newmans infiltrating your e-mail system. It’s a federal crime, so I’m happy to pursue any claims you want to file against them.

Billy: Yeah, our I.T. Team hasn’t figured out how they breached our system yet, but we’re working on it.

Lily: Rey, look at the bigger picture here, okay? This is all a very calculated move against chanccomm. Adam and victor have it in for billy, and this is their way of coming after him and our company.

Rey: I know that the two of them are from saints and the layers of deception and double-cross are quite clear, but I follow the evidence, so unless you can come up with some proof of your claim, my hands are tied. I’ll be in touch.

Lily: So now what are we gonna do?

Billy: There’s only one option.

[ Telephone rings ]

Adam: [ Sighs ] Well, hello, billy. What can I do for you?

Billy: Adam, you’ve made your point. What do you want?

Billy: You, victor, and ashland have done everything you can to sabotage our company. And lucky for you, it appears to be working.

Adam: I got to say, it was a bad blunder publishing that article, billy. Now chanccomm looks awfully bad.

Billy: Well, you got what you wanted. Why don’t you go on and admit it? You hacked into our system, got us to publish that article.

Adam: Hey, you know, rey seemed really interested in those recordings that I gave him. You know, I really feel for you, billy. You never should’ve trusted gaines. Moral of the story is never rely on a blackmailer. That’s one of those hard and fast rules that I live by.

Lily: Adam, why don’t you just tell us what you’re after?

Adam: My advice is simple — fold and get out of the business that you are clearly unqualified to handle.

Lily: [ Scoffs ] You don’t think we’re really gonna do that, do you?

Adam: Hey, that retraction that you released, it’s even more embarrassing than the libelous article that you released. Reads like a pathetic attempt to create a defense.

Lily: We’re not gonna hand over the keys that easily.

Adam: Oh, we weren’t expecting you to walk away for nothing. Newman media would be glad to pay a decent price to take the company off your hands.

Billy: This company is not for sale, do you hear me? Especially not to someone like you.

Adam: You sure about that? I suggest you talk to jill, because if today’s news has the impact on your reputation that i assume it will, chanccomm is gonna be losing subscribers and your ad sales won’t be worth the cost of your company’s letterhead.

Lily: We are not going down without a fight.

Adam: Hey, if that’s what you’re looking for, count us in. We’ll be ready for it. Just be ready to be buried in lawsuits and legal fees. Even if you wanted to do some honest journalism, you won’t have the time or resources.

[ Knock on door ]

Lily: Yes, yes.

Lily: Locke is suing us for libel.

Billy: Adam, listen to me, the gloves are off. Do you hear me? They are off!

Sharon: I’m really worried about abby. She was in pretty bad shape when I last saw her, and she must realize that because she left dominic with devon. Rey. Did you hear what I said?

Rey: Yeah, yeah, abby is dealing with a lot of stuff. But I’m pretty sure that dominic’s gonna be okay.

Sharon: Where was your mind just now?

Rey: I got sucked into a case that’s gnawing at me.

Sharon: Oh. Well, you want to run it by me? Sometimes it helps to bounce things off another person.

Rey: Well, sharon, it’s got low ethics and high stakes, but it’s not clear which side to believe. There may be enough evidence to arrest one party for blackmail, but I’m pretty sure doing so will just work into the other party’s hands. And I’m not about to be used as a pawn in their little chess game. It’s pretty clear that some underhanded business is in the works.

Sharon: Okay, you can stop with the vague generalities and the code words. If you’re doing that to protect me, I appreciate it, but I’m pretty sure I know who we’re talking about here — billy and adam.

Abby: Hi. Is this kim dunaway?

Kim: Who’s calling, please?

Abby: This is abby newman chancellor. I’m phillip “chance” chancellor’s wife. Chance was telling me how much you and your husband, errol, mean to him. Look, please, I need to know if you or your husband have had contact with chance in the last six months.

Kim: I’m sorry, but you have the wrong number.

Abby: No, no, no, no, no, wait! I have something for you, something that chance wanted me to make sure that you had.

Kim: I really think you have the wrong number.

Abby: Do you know chance has a new son?

Kim: I’m sorry, we must have a bad connection. I’m having trouble hearing you clearly.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Operator, yes, I need to reach an errol and kim dunaway in majorca, spain. Yes, please connect me.

[ Line ringing ] It’s a clue. I know it is.

[ Sighs ] No one can deliver your mom’s homemade short ribs.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Abby: Yes, hello?

Kim: It’s kim dunaway. I don’t have much time. I had to step outside to call you back.

Abby: Why?

Kim: So he wouldn’t overhear. Chance, he’s here. Alive, but he’s in a bad way. He needs you.

Abby: [ Gasps ] Oh, my god.

[ Laughs ]

Billy: How insane is this? We are being sued for an article that we did not intend to publish, and every single word in that article is true.

Lily: No, I’m not surprised by this next phase of their very well-calculated attack. Bury us in legal fees and meaningless lawsuits.

Billy: Lily, it’s not meaningless if we lose our credibility. It destroys our company.

Lily: And don’t think for a second that we convinced rey to back off his investigation.

Billy: No, I’m sure that he’s going to talk to michael right now. But I do believe that he trusted our story. I think that he — he thinks we were set up, and he told us go get any information we can on adam so we can nail him. So maybe it’ll work out for us this time.

Sharon: We were at dinner together when adam came over and said that billy had blackmailed newman media, so I have a sense of what’s going on here.

Rey: Mm-hmm, well, now adam and billy are lobbing accusations at one another and engaging me in the battle.

Sharon: Well, if this is just business warfare, can’t you stay out of it?

Rey: Yeah, I wish I could. But it seems that billy’s pushed his tactics into illegal territory. Look, I’m trying to stick to the facts and not let my views of either one of them cloud my judgment, but, frankly, neither one of them look terribly innocent in this mess.

Sharon: You think both sides have committed crimes?

Rey: Well, there’s evidence against billy, but he’s also brought up some pretty valid countercharges against adam. He just hasn’t been able to prove it yet.

Sharon: Well, I don’t know what to say or think about any of this. You convinced me to stay out of the conflict between billy and adam, so maybe now it’s my turn to do that for you.

Rey: Yeah, I wish I could, but it’s my job. It’s my duty to follow up and get to the bottom of whatever’s going down between these two.

Sharon: No, I realize that, but I’m worried about you because if you’re right — and i am willing to believe that victor and adam would go to extremes to damage billy’s reputation — but wouldn’t your reputation be damaged, also, if you didn’t arrest billy?

Rey: Well, I didn’t say i wasn’t going to. I just don’t want to jump the gun. I want to talk through all these things with the da before I make any moves. And quite frankly, I’d like to end this war, not facilitate it, that’s all.

Sharon: Well, I admire your attitude, but did you ever consider that maybe it’s not your job to find a peaceful solution?

Lily: Look, relying on rey is not a viable strategy. We have to do everything that we can to defend ourselves.

Billy: Maybe we can try and get a newman onboard. When I finally talked to victoria, she was furious at me. She called me every name in the book and she demanded to know how this happened. She doesn’t know what they’re up to.

Lily: Or maybe she’s in on it. Look, I have to call the legal team back.

Billy: Victoria, I need you to, um…help me understand something. I need to know what ashland’s motivation is here because he is lying about his shady past and doing everything he can to destroy my company. And I need to know if you are on board at this.

Lily: Can we file one even though we don’t have any evidence that gaines is lying? Yeah, but locke confessed to the newman family, so maybe we can get one of them to go on record and tell the truth, you know? Would that work? No, I know, I know that — i know it’s probably unlikely, you know? We don’t — we — we need the evidence that, you know, that he’s lying, but we don’t have it. So —

[ Sighs ] Yeah, of course. I mean, we’ll keep searching. You know, we don’t really have any other choice.

[ Sighs ]

Louise: While the baby’s napping, I’ll run to the chancellors’ house and grab some onesies and his mobile.

Devon: Perfect. Perfect, perfect. I want to thank you, too, for being so flexible and being able to work here until abby gets back. I do appreciate it.

Louise: Oh, of course. It’s my job to take care of that little angel, wherever he is.

Devon: Oh, well, thank you so much. And also, you can take your time today, too, ’cause I’m not gonna leave for a few hours, so dominic and I will be just fine.

Louise: [ Chuckles ]

Abby: Devon, knowing dominic is safe with you is the only way I can do this. And I do need to do it. Not just for me, but for dom. Please tell him I love him more than anything in the world. I’m afraid this is gonna take longer than I thought.

Devon: Abby, what the hell did you do? Unleash the freshness…

Devon: Denise, hello. This is devon hamilton. I am, uh — I’m once again asking you to come out of retirement because I need your help. I need to find my friend, abby newman chancellor.

Victor: My daughter abby is missing. I need you to find out where she has gone and I need you to do it fast. Is that clear? Okay.

[ Cellphone rings ] Yes? Send him in.

Billy: We need to talk.

Victor: Well, now, billy boy. I wondered when you were gonna show up.

Billy: I bypassed the other two minions and I came straight to the source.

Victor: Ah.

Billy: Because, really, this is about your hatred for me anyway, isn’t it? Your son is nothing but a runt who’s along for the ride.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Adam has plenty of his own vitriol for you. As does ashland locke. In fact, you seem to collect enemies the way some people collect stamps.

Billy: Here’s the plan. It all stops. All of it. Your attacks, everything. You convince ashland to withdraw the lawsuit, and I step down from chanccomm.

Lily: Excuse me. Have you seen billy abbott?

Ashland: Don’t tell me billy’s skipped town already. He can’t take the heat?

Lily: Why are you doing this? Why are you trying to ruin us? Like, is this sport for you? Like, what do you gain from this? And I actually defended you to billy. And now I wish I never had.

Victor: Ah, billy boy. Why would you fold so quickly? You’re a gambler. You must have really had a bad hand.

Billy: I walk away, I leave chanccomm for lily to run. She doesn’t deserve to be punished like this. I’ll take the hit.

Victor: Really?

Jack: Chance is gone? Killed while working undercover?

Ashley: I’m afraid so.

Jack: When?

Ashley: A few days ago, in valencia, spain. Christine came by to tell us in person, and we’ve all been reeling ever since.

Jack: Oh, my god, abby’s got to be devastated.

Ashley: It’s been excruciating. She’s been in so much pain, jack, and there’s nothing I can do to help her.

Jack: My heart goes out to her. I wish I’d known this. I would’ve been here to help.

Ashley: I’m sorry, I know. We couldn’t tell you any sooner because the spanish authorities haven’t been able to recover a body.

Jack: Wait, then chance is —

Ashley: He’s just presumed dead, but they did find some of his personal effects in the rubble. They found his watch. They found his wedding ring.

Jack: I get the — I get the picture.

Ashley: I’m sorry, jackie, i know you cared about him. I know you loved him.

Jack: Oh, god, he’s just a terrific young man. His whole life ahead of him. Just a tragic waste.

[ Inhales sharply ] Okay, look, I want to be here to support you and abby in any way I can.

Ashley: I’m gonna take you up on that. I’m gonna tell traci later today, but can you talk to billy about it?

Jack: Yeah, yeah, I’ll take care of it.

Ashley: Okay.

Jack: What about jill?

Ashley: Thankfully, nina handled that, but I’m sure jill would appreciate if you reached out to her yourself.

Mariah: Hello?

Ashley: In here.

Mariah: Am I interrupting?

Jack: No, not at all. Ashley was just telling me the tragic news.

Mariah: Yeah, it’s, um… it’s just awful. I came to check on abby. Is she up yet?

Ashley: Actually, she left before we woke up. I’m not really sure where she went.

Mariah: Um, well, is the baby doing okay? Can I see him?

Ashley: He’s not — he’s not here.

Mariah: So abby took him with her?

Ashley: No, actually, the baby’s gonna be staying with devon for a bit.

Devon: Come on, buddy, you can do it. Give me a “B.” Give me a “U.” Give me a “R.” Give me a “P.”

Dominic: [ Burps ]

Devon: Hey! There you go! Good job, man. That was great. Oh, hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were up.

Amanda: Oh, I wouldn’t miss this for the world.

Devon: Oh. I think he’s settling in pretty nicely. Barely woke up last night. And he’s so much calmer than he was at the mansion.

Amanda: Think that abby made the right decision bringing him here. You know, this is exactly what he needed — a nice, calm routine.

Devon: Yeah. I’m just happy that she trusted me.

Amanda: She’s so lucky to have a friend like you.

Devon: Just, you know, the fact that she even got to the point, though, of actually coming and leaving him with me just goes to show how much pain she’s really in, though.

Lauren: Here you go. One extra-hot triple-shot mocha with a dash of cinnamon, just the way you like it.

Michael: [ Laughs ] What did I do to deserve this?

Lauren: So many things. But let’s start with the superb job you did of grilling that defense witness yesterday. I’m just so glad I got to see you in court. I just wish they had been videotaping it because it was truly a master class in cross-examination. My love, you are an artiste.

Michael: Thank you for that high praise. I have to admit, it — it really does wonders for my mojo knowing that my biggest fan is sitting in the gallery.

Lauren: Aww. Is that so?

Michael: Yeah, it’s always a nice boost to have somebody looking at you adoringly. For whatever reason, I don’t always get that from the opposing attorney or the jury.

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Well, I hope not.

Michael: I live for that laugh, you know.

Lauren: Well, you are still the wittiest man I have ever met.

Michael: I’m glad I can keep you amused.

Lauren: How lucky are we that we found each other and that we still feel so much in love?

Michael: Extremely. But not everybody is this fortunate.

Lauren: Mm. Thinking about nick and phyllis?

Michael: Hmm. Our best friends are hurting, and there is not a damn thing we can do about it.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Hey.

Phyllis: Hi. This is, um…

Nick: [ Sighs ] Yeah.

Phyllis: Well, um, you stay here. I’ll get a bagel somewhere else.

Nick: No, no, you were here first. I’ll go somewhere else.

Phyllis: You don’t have to do that.

Nick: [ Sighs ] You know, this is ridiculous. We’re gonna run into each other. Let’s just get past it.

Phyllis: Yeah, let’s get past it. I mean, you’d think that we’d be good at this. We’ve done it so many times.

Nick: I believe the best way to deal with something uncomfortable is to just face it head on. So…you want to have breakfast with me?

Mariah: Why would abby leave the baby with devon? When was this decided?

Ashley: She made the decision on her own without consulting anybody else. Victor and I found out after the fact.

Mariah: Ah —

[ Sighs ] I’m just shocked.

Ashley: Mm-hmm. Well, we all were.

Mariah: Did abby give a reason?

Ashley: Well, mariah, she’s drowning in grief. I mean, clearly, if she’d asked me, I would have gladly taken care of my own grandson.

Jack: Traci and I would’ve been there for her, as well.

Ashley: Of course, and nikki and victor and nina. I mean, there’s no shortage of people that love that little boy.

Mariah: I wasn’t even in the running to be considered. Not after I admitted I got too attached to the baby. You know, I’m — I’m doing my best to put that all behind me. I’m trying to keep things in perspective. I guess abby doesn’t trust me after that.

Ashley: Honey, for whatever it’s worth, I haven’t heard anything like that from her. I think it was just natural for her to reach out to devon.

Jack: Yeah, makes all the sense in the world. Those two have been close for years. They’ve come to rely on each other.

Ashley: Yeah, and since we found out about chance, you know, devon’s been incredibly supportive and he’s great with the baby, so please don’t take this personally.

Mariah: No, no, of course not. I just went through my own trauma recently, and I get where abby is coming from. Sometimes you just — you need to take a break.

Ashley: Thanks for being so understanding.

Mariah: Well, I’ll — I’ll probably check on devon and the baby before I go to work.

Jack: Yes, and I have somewhere I need to be. I will get the news to billy, okay?

Ashley: Thank you.

Jack: Yeah. Want to walk me out?

Mariah: Yeah, absolutely.

Jack: Hey, hang in there.

Ashley: Thanks.

Ashley: Honey, it’s your mom. I know that you want to be alone. I understand that, but I’d really like to know where you are so that I can make sure you’re okay. So, if you need to talk, you know that I’m always here for you. Please just call me as soon as you get this, okay?

Lauren: Poor nick and phyllis. I really feel for them.

Michael: I know, so do I.

Lauren: I wonder what happened.

Michael: I was a little curious about that myself. I mean, it wasn’t their usual spectacular blow-up. No cheating, no big scandal.

Lauren: No outside forces pulling them apart. Maybe it just fizzled.

Michael: At least they don’t seem bitter.

Lauren: No, and I assume it’s more about who they are as people and what they want in a relationship.

Michael: Well, that would certainly be a vastly more mature way to end a love affair.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Michael: Although probably no less painful.

Lauren: You know, sometimes it’s those quiet realizations that just sneak up on you bit by bit that are just so devastating. You know, maybe they felt like they were better as friends and parents than lovers.

Nick: So what looks good to you?

Phyllis: Um…the huevos rancheros or blueberry pancakes.

Nick: Strong. I am definitely gonna go with —

Phyllis: The spinach, mushroom, swiss omelet, get rid of the toast, substitute it with a fruit cup, and a side of habanero salsa.

Nick: How’d you know that?

Phyllis: ‘Cause I know you. You know, you’re a creature of habit. You only order two things on this menu. The other day, you had the bacon waffle. I know all your habits.

Nick: Yeah, I do only order those two things. Guilty as charged.

Phyllis: This isn’t gonna work.

Nick: What?

Phyllis: “What?” This. You know, us being pals and buddies. I don’t think we can get past this tension.

Nick: What do we do, then?

Phyllis: I don’t know. Cut to the chase? You want to cut to the chase and just say whatever’s on our mind? Or we could just forget the whole thing.

Nick: I’d really rather not do that.

Phyllis: Why?

Nick: Because I care about you and I would like us to try and be friends.

Phyllis: Maybe with time.

Nick: You know what, phyllis? Life is too short, so just talk about what is on your mind.

Phyllis: How’s your family?

Nick: [ Scoffs ] After 40 wrinkles deepen and skin can get uneven

Nick: Are you sure you want to get into that?

Phyllis: I love living dangerously.

Nick: Well, I know my family is, like, your least favorite topic on this earth.

Phyllis: Oh, yeah, that’s for sure. That’s for sure, but you love talking about them. They seem to always be on your mind.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Yes, they are.

Phyllis: So I saw the article that billy put out busting ashland for the fraudulent will. I mean, that’s a shock, right? But chanccomm’s number-one source, what, that gaines guy, says the whole thing’s bogus.

Nick: Yeah, I don’t know. It’s gotten crazy. I don’t know who’s telling the truth anymore.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] What does victoria say?

Nick: Haven’t talked to her since the story came out.

Phyllis: Oh. She’s giving you the silent treatment?

Nick: No, things are definitely better between us. Just trying to stay out of the mess, you know? I think it’d be for the best. Billy has not been able to do that, and he’s getting burned now, big time.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? For months, I’ve been telling you to stay out of the mess. For months, I’ve been telling you to ignore your family’s lunacy. And now, all of a sudden, staying out of the mess seems like a great idea. Wow, awesome. Awesome. That’s incredible.

[ Huffs ]

Nick: You feel better? You got to say —

Phyllis: No, I don’t feel better. But I do feel fantastic that I’m not walking on eggshells anymore with you. That feels great. I mean, ’cause what are you gonna do, break up with me?

Nick: No, I mean, that’s not an option, right?

Noah: Thank you. Hey, how’s it going?

Tessa: Oh, it’s pretty good. How are you? Are you getting used to the gc groove?

Noah: It’s gonna take a little while to get over the culture shock. You know, the pace in london, it’s — it’s a lot faster.

Tessa: Oh, I’m sure you miss it there.

Noah: Actually, the real surprise has been how much i don’t miss it. Yeah, you know, I kind of like how things here are a little bit more leisurely, you know?

Tessa: I almost believe you.

Noah: I’m serious.

Tessa: [ Laughs ]

Noah: Although I can’t really help but feel I’m running behind. Does that make sense?

Tessa: No, no, it does. I mean, it always takes me a second to re-acclimate when i come back from somewhere else, so…

[ Cellphone chimes ] Oh, bad news?

Noah: Uh…no, it’s — it’s not important.

Tessa: Well, do you have a minute? There’s actually something i want to ask you.

Noah: I’m on leisure time, remember?

Tessa: Great. I’m gonna grab a coffee, and I’ll be right back. Hi, can I just get a cup of black coffee, please?

Devon: Yeah, I’m gonna be working from home today. Yep, and can we see if my 4:00 P.M. Is okay with a video meeting, or we can go ahead and reschedule them? Alright, yeah, that’s it. Okay, thank you. Yo! Hey, before you go, I want to introduce you to somebody. This is the famous dominic that you’ve been hearing so much about.

Moses: Wow. I thought I was dreaming about a baby crying last night. That was real.

Devon: Yeah, man, it was real. It was — he had some things to get off his chest around 2:00 A.M. Did we keep you up?

Moses: No, no, it wasn’t a problem, but why is he here?

Devon: Abby needed my help with him because she asked if i can watch him for a little while while she’s dealing with the loss of her husband.

Moses: Oh. Okay. No offense, but do you even know how to take care of a baby?

Devon: Yes, I know how to take care of a baby. Of course I do. I used to watch after the twins now and then. Do you know how to take care of any kids or babysit?

Moses: Uh…no, not — not anyone this little. What a sweet face.

Devon: Hmm.

Moses: Wow.

Devon: What?

Moses: Dominic just looked at me and he totally has your eyes.

Devon: Really?

Moses: Yeah, no one’s ever mentioned that before?

Devon: No, no, I haven’t heard that one yet.

[ Chuckles ]

Moses: Well, don’t worry, he’s still cute.

Devon: Thanks.

Moses: [ Laughs ]

Nick: I, uh — I talked to summer. I told her that we weren’t together anymore.

Phyllis: Yeah, she called me after you talked. She wanted to see how I was doing. She wasn’t smug. That was great. I mean, she didn’t think that we would last from the beginning, so…

Nick: Yeah, I remember that.

Phyllis: Yeah. She was sad. Um…but her wedding was magical. We had fun, right? That was fun.

Nick: Yeah, I’m really glad we got to share that. I mean, what more could parents want than to see their kids happy?

Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, she’s gonna be okay, right? I mean, she hasn’t learned from us, has she? We’re not gonna pass that on to her, our confusing relationship.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] She’s gonna be just fine. Really proud of that kid.

Phyllis: I am, too. So I didn’t tell her about chance. I know that the abbotts are sort of keeping it quiet, and i didn’t want it to get back to jack, you know, through the grapevine.

Nick: I’m assuming ashley’s gonna be handling all that very soon, if she hasn’t already.

Phyllis: She needs to.

Nick: Yeah. Alright, I, uh — I got to get to a meeting. Thank you for having breakfast with me.

Phyllis: It was fun.

Nick: Maybe we can do it again soon.

Phyllis: Yeah, maybe.

Nick: You want me to walk you out?

Phyllis: No, it’s okay. I’m gonna finish my coffee.

Nick: Alright. Have a good rest of your day.

[ Sighs ]

Tessa: So I just re-signed with devon’s label.

Noah: Where you should be. Congrats.

Tessa: Thank you. It has set all kinds of great things in motion. For starters, I am releasing my first full-length album.

Noah: Wow! That’s — that’s incredible, tess.

Tessa: Thank you. Oh, it’s so much more work than putting out a single or an ep, but I — I’m really excited. Which is where you come in.

Noah: Me? How’s that?

Tessa: I would like you to design the cover.

Noah: Um, I mean, I’m incredible flattered that you’d ask.

Tessa: And devon is totally cool with it. He loves your work.

Noah: Yeah, that’s — that’s great to hear. It’s just, um…

Tessa: Uh-oh.

Noah: I’m used to having total creative control. And I’ve worked with devon before, and he’s great with artists, you know, has a great respect for the whole creative process.

Tessa: But…?

Noah: [ Sighs ] But I just got done working with my grandpa and adam on some design stuff for newman media, and, you know, they were kind of just breathing down my neck the whole time.

Tessa: Okay. Yes, but victor and devon?

[ Both laugh ] Come on, there’s on comparison. It’ll be a totally different experience. Okay, just listen to the album, see if anything sparks for you. I’m really proud of what devon and I have put together, and i think you’re gonna want to be a part of it.

Noah: I’d love to hear your songs.

Tessa: Okay, I will send you the files right now.

Devon: I take it abby told you that dominic was here?

Mariah: Uh, actually, ashley told me. She seemed a little taken aback that abby didn’t ask her or victor to take care of the baby.

Devon: Yeah, I mean, I was surprised, too. You know, abby just showed up to my door.

Mariah: How did she seem? I mean, I can imagine she wasn’t in a great state of mind if she felt like she couldn’t take care of the baby.

Devon: Yeah. I mean, I was — it was tough for her to admit that, but i think she left relieved knowing that he’s gonna be looked after while she’s getting the help she needs.

Mariah: How are you doing with all of this?

Devon: I’m doing alright. I am. Thank you for asking. He’s doing fantastic. He pretty much slept through the whole night. He finished his bottle this morning, and he’s just so much calmer than he was at the mansion. You’re in a good mood, aren’t you?

Mariah: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: Really are.

Mariah: Hi! Hi, dom. You a happy boy?

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Mariah: Oh, look at that smile.

Devon: I know. He’s been like that all morning.

Mariah: Have you heard from abby this morning at all?

Devon: No, just figured she was sleeping in.

Mariah: Actually, no. She left the house before anybody woke up, and nobody has any idea where she is. I tried to reach her, but she’s not answering any phone calls and she’s not at society.

Dominic: [ Cooing ]

Mariah: Oh, do you want to be a part of the conversation, too? You do? Well, that’s great, because i love talking to you. Do you have any idea where abby might be?

Devon: No, I don’t, but she did mention last night the idea of getting out of town.

Mariah: Out of town?

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Mariah: Without telling anybody where she’s going or for how long?

Devon: It was just a thought she was having. There was no definitive plans.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Nick just left.

Jack: I just saw him walk out.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] We had a friendly breakfast.

Jack: How did that go?

Phyllis: It was fine. It was civil. It was fine.

[ Sighs ] I don’t know why I’m acting like this. I’m okay with this, really. I’m okay with it.

[ Chuckles ]

Jack: Look, if you don’t feel like company, I —

Phyllis: No, I want the distraction. Really, have a seat. So, why are you here?

Jack: I’m here to have breakfast with michael and lauren. I guess I’m a little early.

Phyllis: You don’t seem very excited about it.

Jack: Yeah, I’m not really feeling in the mood to socialize. I just got some news about my family that has shaken me up.

Phyllis: Uh, yeah, I know. I’m sorry to hear about chance. I really am, and, you know, i was there from the beginning, seeing those two, you know, develop a relationship, and i think that if anybody was gonna have a happy ending, it was definitely those two.

Jack: My heart just goes out to her. I…I know you think of her as a spoiled heiress, but she has had more than her share of heartbreak, terrible loss, real betrayal, and…I was so happy that she’d fallen in love with this guy. Seemed like he was a man that could help her trust in sustained happiness again, and…

[ Sighs ] And now she’s lost him.

Phyllis: Hey. You feel things deeply, and i know how broken up you were when kyle and summer broke up, and you’ve really been there for me, whether I deserved it or not.

Jack: What else would you have me do? Turn my back?

Phyllis: Yeah, but what about you? You know, you need someone to lean on. And I want you to know that i will always, always be there for you.

Amanda: Oh, what a wonderful surprise, running into the two of you.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]

Amanda: I’m sorry, am i interrupting something? No one can deliver your mom’s homemade short ribs.

Phyllis: No, it’s fine. It’s fine, we were just talking about chance.

Jack: Ashley just told me the news about chance, and i’m pretty devastated.

Amanda: I am really sorry for your family’s loss. Chance was an exceptional human being.

Jack: Yeah, thank you for that. And thank you to both you and devon for stepping up, for taking dominic into your home.

Amanda: Of course, we want to do everything we can to help.

Michael: Hey!

Phyllis: Yeah, definitely. Good to see you.

Jack: Yeah, you, too.

Michael: Now, the defense will probably rest after sutton’s testimony. Then there’s closing arguments and jury deliberation, which i hope won’t go on too long.

Amanda: Look at you, you seem confident.

Michael: Mm, well, everything has gone well thus far. I’m getting some vibes from the jury. They do not like sutton. They don’t want to see him get away with this.

Amanda: I really hope you’re right. But let’s not forget, sutton is a career politician, extremely good at playing to an audience. I almost fell for his act myself, so I know how effective it can be.

Michael: Yes, well, the big difference would be you didn’t have me by your side to counter sutton on all his lies and evasive maneuvers, but the jury will.

Tessa: We haven’t done the final mix yet, but you should be able to get the vibe of the album from what I sent you.

Noah: Cool.

Mariah: Hey. Hi, guys.

Mariah: I just came from visiting dom. He’s at devon’S.

Tessa: Oh. Well, what is he doing there?

Mariah: Abby feels like she can’t adequately take care of him right now, which i completely understand, so she left him with devon.

Noah: Yeah, I can’t believe abby has to face this. I just feel so bad for her.

Mariah: Evidently, I wasn’t even considered to take care of him, even though I offered. Nobody trusts me anymore.

Tessa: Well, you know, i think it’s less that and more abby just trying to be sensitive after everything you’ve gone through.

Mariah: And what’s more, abby might have left town this morning without telling anyone how long she’d be gone for. I mean, you can’t just do that when you have a child, you know?

Noah: Do you know for sure that abby left?

Mariah: No, but nobody knows where she is, she isn’t answering her phone. What if there is an emergency?

Tessa: Well, you know, let’s take it one step at a time. Maybe take a few deep breaths. ‘Cause if abby’s gone, it’s only been a few hours, so there’s no real emergency quite yet.

Mariah: Okay, but if you were a mother, and even if you couldn’t take care of your child for whatever reason, you would still want to be close, right? To make sure that things are okay? I know I would.

Noah: It’s pretty hard for any of us to put ourselves in abby’s place.

Tessa: I feel like I can. Well, when mariah was missing, i couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like if she never came back. I would’ve lost my mind.

Mariah: I have to remember that everybody handles grief differently. But if abby did leave town, isn’t that just a little irresponsible?

Ashley: So I thought I’d see how the baby’s doing.

Devon: He’s doing great. He’s taking a nap right now upstairs. Abby left me with the baby monitor and anything else i could possibly need, so we’re good.

Ashley: Good to hear.

Devon: Yeah. How’s she doing, though? ‘Cause mariah came by and told me that she took off this morning.

Ashley: I haven’t heard from her, so I checked out her room and now I’m worried.

Devon: Why are you worried?

Ashley: I think she packed a bag. Toiletries are missing. Some clothes are missing. So I called the grand phoenix, i called the athletic club, just to see if maybe she checked in there for the night to get her head straight. She’s not registered at either place, at least not under her own name.

Devon: Well, listen, last night, she did mention getting out of town.

Ashley: Did she say where she might go?

Devon: No, she didn’T. It was like a passing thought she was having, and I didn’t think she was serious about it. But it kind of sounds like that’s what she did.

Ashley: Yeah, I think you’re right.

Devon: I wish she would’ve told somebody.

Ashley: Abby doesn’t behave this way. Clearly, she’s not herself. Motrin works fast to stop pain where it starts.

Lauren: You seemed worried when phyllis was leaving earlier. I assume it’s about her breakup with nick. So sad.

Jack: Yeah, we were all rooting for them to work things out, but they’d been building toward this for some time now.

Lauren: Hmm. I gather she’s been confiding in you.

Jack: Well, I provided a friendly ear, a sounding board, someone who knows her worst instincts and can warn her not to give in to them.

Lauren: You can warn her, but will she listen?

Jack: You know what? I think you’d be surprised. She has handled herself with real grace and poise.

Lauren: Do you think you can be objective with her? I mean, phyllis is your ex.

Jack: I’ve been a friend to her when she needed one.

Lauren: Good.

Jack: I take it, then, you disapprove of anything more?

Lauren: Look, I love you both, but to repeat the mistakes of the past? Those were tough times. She caused you a lot of anguish. I mean, the fact that you two are even friends today, I mean, that’s a miracle.

Jack: You know what? We’ve all grown older and wiser.

Amanda: I don’t know all of the missing details, but, objectively, I would say that you have a deep connection with jack. You know, and he’s been a huge part of your life all of these years. And you’ve told me how much you still care about each other, despite your rocky past. So, phyllis, have you considered the possibility that jack is more than a friend to you? So maybe you’ve never fully gotten over him.

Phyllis: I love you, too. That’s never gonna change.

Jack: Well, thank you. It’s — it’s not the same thing, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Phyllis: It is the same thing. I really love you. You’ll always be in my heart… permanently in my heart. So just keep that knowledge with you, okay?

[ Doorbell rings ]

Devon: Nick, hey.

Nick: Hey. Am I early?

Devon: We have a meeting, don’t we?

Nick: Yeah.

Devon: I’m so sorry.

Nick: Is it not a good time?

Devon: Dude, no, it’s — come on in. It’s fine. I just completely forgot.

Nick: You babysitting?

Devon: Uh…yeah, I am, I am. Dominic is actually upstairs taking a nap. Abby stopped by last night and asked if I would look after him for a little while while she gets herself together.

Nick: I told you, last time i saw her, she seemed completely overwhelmed. I appreciate that she’s, you know, reached out to you and that you’re there for her. It means a lot to me.

Devon: Absolutely. Of course. You know I’d do anything for her and the baby.

Nick: You know what? Kind of seems like you got your hands full. Let’s just reschedule this. Think I want to see my sister anyway.

Devon: Well, you know that no one knows where she’s at right now.

Nick: What do you mean?

Devon: Ashley came by earlier and told me that abby packed a bag this morning and disappeared, and now she’s not answering anyone’s calls or responding to texts.

Nick: No texts, no note, nothing?

Devon: Not a thing, no. And what worries me is, from the state she was in last night, she does not need to be alone.

Nick: We got to find her.

Devon: Yeah.

Ashley: Abby? Abby? Abby, honey, you’ve been gone for hours, and nobody has heard from you. Now, I know you don’t want us to worry, but we can’t help it. Call me as soon as you get this, please. I love you.

Sharon: Rey, it’s okay.

Rey: Are you sure you want to stay even with them a few tables over?

Sharon: I meant what I said when we walked in. I have zero desire to go someplace else.

Rey: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: You know what? Matter of fact, it’s nice to see adam out for a change, having a good time, even if it is with sally spectra. But I’m not gonna worry about her motives anymore. Not my problem. But judging by your expression, you’re the one who’s bothered. Would you like to go someplace else?

[ Laughter ]

Lily: So you made up the whole thing?

Gaines: That’s right.

Billy: The story about camilla rhodes leaving ashland nothing in her will.

Gaines: Lie.

Lily: And ashland forging a letter to steal her fortune.

Gaines: Lie.

Billy: I don’t believe you.

Gaines: It’s the absolute truth.

Billy: It can’t be.

Gaines: Well, I don’t know what else to do to persuade you that it’s true, but I put one over on you.

Billy: No, no, no, no. That doesn’t make sense.

Lily: So you went all the way to italy to drop a bomb on ashland’s wedding over a story that was a complete fabrication?

[ Scoffs ] I’m sorry, I’m not buying this.

Gaines: Well, it didn’t need to be true to bust up the wedding. Right? Locke would’ve been publicly humiliated, and I would’ve left the burden on him to clear his name. That’s why I went.

Billy: But you had the proof. The original letter from camilla rhodes before she died explaining that she’s leaving nothing to ashland in the will.

Gaines: Yeah. Well, it was a fake. I had it made. A guy I know in atlantic city. You thought it was real. Good. I guess I got my money’s worth.

Lily: Wait, so if — if you won’t back up these claims, then it looks like the entire chanccomm story is a lie.

Billy: Except it’s not.

Lily: We won’t be able to defend ourselves in a lawsuit. Ashland’s lawyers will bury us.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart.

Nikki: How is abby doing?

Victor: Hmm. How is abby doing? Not well.

Nikki: Oh, dear. Well, that’s to be expected.

Victor: Yeah. Tell you one thing, grief can cause all kinds of bizarre behavior in people, can’t it?

Nikki: Yes, especially when the loss happens so suddenly, like it did with chance. It’s very overwhelming. She’s gonna need some time.

Victor: Yeah, and I’m gonna give her all the help she needs, you know? But I’m a little concerned about her after what she did this morning.

Billy: Don’t worry. Chanccomm’s not gonna be buried, ’cause he’s lying through his teeth. Aren’t you? The second that article is released, you struck a deal with victor, adam, and ashland to save your own skin. They’re paying you right now to say it’s all a lie, but it’s not. Ashland already copped to forging the letter. He admitted to victoria that he committed a crime. He’s not gonna do that if it’s a lie. And he’s been paying you blackmail money for years. The truth is, ashland forged that letter. He stole his mentor’s estate. And when you found out, he paid you to keep it quiet. It’s as simple as that.

Gaines: Well, you’re gonna have a hard time proving that’s true, but there’s one thing that’s easy to prove — that letter is a fake. And you didn’t have it authenticated, did you? Hmm? No. Test it. The ink, the paper — you’ll see. It’s nowhere near 30 years old.

Lily: [ Scoffs ] I’m sorry, this is crazy. I mean, you went through these extremes to get the upper hand on ashland. Really? A forgery of a forgery? I mean, something is not right here.

Billy: You didn’t go to these extremes by yourself, did you?

Lily: Wait, you think he had victor and adam help him or — not back then, but recently?

Billy: I don’t know. I mean, maybe he didn’t escape this tuscan wine cellar by himself. Maybe victor and adam let you out when you agreed to go along with their elaborate scheme. You can stop me at any time if I’m getting too warm.

Lily: Yeah, but if that’s true…

Billy: Then victor and adam put this whole thing in motion.

Lily: Yeah, it explains why adam was so smug when you were threatening him. He was never in jeopardy.

Billy: And it also explains why you caved so easily when i said I wasn’t gonna release the article. You had a big deal planned with the newmans, didn’t you?

Gaines: Well, I can neither confirm nor deny.

Billy: You are a slippery son of a bitch.

Gaines: Careful, billy. You’re in enough hot water as it is.

Billy: Tell me what their next move is.

Gaines: I have no idea, but i am done. I am out of here. I am going far, far away, and this time, for good. And, hey, billy, as far as the deal between us, you don’t owe me anything.

Billy: Oh, thank you for that. You stabbed me in the back and you try and destroy my company? That’s very sweet of you.

Gaines: Don’t mention it.

Lily: Why did you even come here in the first place? Just to rub it in our faces?

Gaines: Maybe.

Lily: You are so twisted.

Gaines: Probably, but, hey, what good is a win if you can’t gloat a little bit?

Billy: Oh, this isn’t a win. Don’t kid yourself. Yeah, you may be walking away with a little bit more money, but victor, adam, and, more importantly, your mortal enemy ashland, they still got power over you. They still hold the upper hand.

Gaines: Yeah, well, hopefully, all that newman cash will ease my pain. Anyway, goodbye. Good luck. You’re gonna need it.

Lily: [ Sighs ]

Rey: I’m not gonna leave the restaurant where my sister’s empanadas are still on the menu because of adam.

Sharon: I’m so glad the new chef kept them on the menu. I have missed lola’s empanadas. Have you talked to her recently?

Rey: It’s been about a week or so.

Sharon: How’s she doing?

Rey: She’s doing well. She likes the work. She’s reconnected with old friends, making new ones.

Sharon: And I’m sure it’s easier dating without her overprotective policeman brother hovering.

Rey: Oh, come on, I was never that bad.

Sharon: Mm…

Rey: Okay. Maybe I was.

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Rey: I miss her.

Sharon: I do, too. We all miss her.

Rey: Don’t you think it’s strange that adam is so happy? Why is he in such a good mood?

Sharon: It is strange, i agree.

Rey: I mean, we both read the article about locke that was published today. He’s on the board of newman media at the center of this huge scandal. He’s gonna drag adam’s company through the mud, so why does he seem to be having the time of his life?

[ Laughter ]

Adam: Don’T.

Sally: I — I’m sorry.

Rey: What’s wrong with this picture?

Sharon: Do you really want to spend time psychoanalyzing adam?

Rey: You’re right. The less time we spend thinking about adam, the better our lives will be.

Sharon: Hey, let’s order some empanadas.

Rey: Sí, vamos.

Sharon: Whoo! They’re really good.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sally: You have a history with sharon, right?

Adam: [ Sighs ] You know i do.

Sally: You don’t have any feelings about her being here?

Adam: Look, we’re not gonna go there, okay?

Sally: Okay.

Adam: So, stop.

Sally: Another forbidden topic. You’re just determined to be a man of mystery, aren’t you?

Adam: Are you kidding me? I am an open book. Go ahead, ask me anything.

Sally: Really?

Adam: Go for it.

Sally: Okay. What are you looking for in —

Adam: No, wait. Not that.

Sally: You don’t even know what I was gonna ask.

Adam: Oh, I know, and I — i can’t answer that. Or your next question.

Sally: Alright, what about —

Adam: Someone said they’re on their way to meet me here.

Sally: But you can’t say who.

Adam: No.

Sally: The mysteries just keep on coming. No one can deliver your mom’s homemade short ribs.

Victor: So, abby packs up the boy and his things and takes him over to devon’s house.

Nikki: What?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: She’s gonna be clear across town from her baby?

Victor: That’s where she wants him right now.

Nikki: But what if… I don’t understand — I have a lot of questions right now.

Victor: So do I. However, ashley and I decided not to interfere with our daughter’s decision. That’s — she has a right to do what she wants. She’s the mother, you know?

Nikki: Oh, well, that was very reasonable of you.

[ Sighs ] I-I hope that this arrangement doesn’t last very long.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Abby left it open-ended.

Nikki: You know, I’ll bet that she’s gonna start missing dominic like crazy, she’s gonna want him to be by her side.

Victor: I totally agree with you. But apparently she’s not in the frame of mind right now to take care of the boy.

Nikki: It’s good that she recognizes that, but there are certainly other options.

Victor: Yeah. I could’ve jumped in and taken custody of the boy.

Nikki: Really?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: How could you have done that?

Victor: Ashley and I were designated as legal guardians of dominic in case something happened to chance or abby.

Nikki: I see. So you could’ve stopped her from taking the baby to devon’s, but you wanted to honor her wishes.

Victor: Exactly. Let us see how it all works out.

Sally: Okay, so we can’t talk about this and we can’t talk about that, and discussion of that other thing, you know, is completely out of the question. So where does that leave us? Want to talk about the weather?

Adam: Oh, pretty chilly outside. I mean, maybe it’ll be warmer tomorrow.

Sally: Okay, good, yeah. That’s a start. Scintillating. What about the local sports team?

Adam: Ugh, no.

Sally: Ooh, thanksgiving. What are you favorite foods?

Adam: I actually — I can make a mean pumpkin pie. My mother’s recipe.

Sally: Do tell.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I wrote it down for her when i was a kid. I still have it, actually. It’s one of the few mementos that I’ve kept. It’s a 3×5 notecard with my 9-year-old handwriting on it.

Sally: That’s so sweet.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Why didn’t she write it herself?

Adam: She was blind.

Sally: Oh, wow, I didn’t know that.

Adam: Yeah. She cooked and baked mostly by memory. But every once in a while, she would have me come in and help her, and I always liked that. Thanksgiving on the farm was a big deal. Even those years when it was just the two of us, she always wanted to make it special.

Sally: So when you were a kid, did you ever —

Adam: Wait, wait, hold that thought. I have to talk to someone. I want to hear exactly what happened.

Gaines: Well, there are no big surprises. Billy and lily reacted just as suspected. They figured you and your old man were behind the publication. Billy stomped and yelled a bit, but he knows he’s beaten.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Good. Good, good, good. But you’re not done.

Gaines: [ Sighs ] Yeah. Don’t remind me.

Adam: Well, just execute the next step of the plan, and then you’re free.

Sharon: That was such a good kale salad.

Rey: That dressing’s my mom’S.

Sharon: I didn’t know that.

Rey: Oh, yeah. Lola “borrowed” a lot from mom.

Sharon: Well, I guess that’s what makes a great chef. You take a little from here, you take a little from there, and then you make it your own. Isn’t that right, rey? Rey.

Rey: Uh, we still talking about the salad?

Sharon: [ Laughs ] I was, yes, but I don’t feel like I have your full attention.

Rey: I am sorry. My mind wandered. That’s jesse gaines. I recognize him from the photo in the article. Whatever’s going down between the two of them can’t be good.

Billy: We got played. Victor and adam, they really one-upped us here.

Lily: With some help.

Billy: Yeah, sure, ashland and gaines gave them what they wanted, what they needed, but victor and adam, they were the masterminds.

Lily: I was talking about you.

Billy: What is that supposed to mean?

Lily: I mean, you were basically victor and adam’s accomplice. All they had to do was put some bait on a hook and cast a line, and you couldn’t help yourself. You had to take the bait. They knew you wouldn’t be able to resist going after newman media and locke, and they were right about you.

Billy: I’m sorry, do you remember that they declared war on our company, trying to destroy everything we’d built? I was trying to protect us.

Lily: Do you remember I told you to try another option, like asking victoria to intervene? But you had too much pride to ask your ex for help.

Billy: I asked victoria. She didn’t get back to me. You went to her, asked her to intervene. How did that go?

Lily: Well, at least I tried something other than blackmail, which was your only plan, and it failed spectacularly.

Billy: Yes, lily. I am responsible for this mess, okay? But you are partly responsible, as well.

Lily: Sorry, why is that?

Billy: Because you told me to do whatever it takes. Your mission:

Nikki: I agree with you, but I can also see abby’s point of view. She feels that she’s not up to looking after dominic right now.

Victor: [ Sighs ] I think it would’ve best for dominic to stay with us here at the ranch for a week or two.

Nikki: Absolutely.

Victor: I mean, I respect and I really like devon. He’s a very nice man, reliable man. I trust him. But dominic is my grandson.

Nikki: True.

Victor: Okay.

Nikki: But devon does have a special bond with the baby, and abby has seen that. So if having devon look after the child right now gives her a sense of peace, that’s the most important thing right now.

Victor: You kind of approve of her decision?

Nikki: Well, of course i would much rather have dominic be here…

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: …But I can see why she made the choice she made.

Victor: [ Sighs ] I guess so can I. So what I will do is everything I can for my daughter.

Billy: Again, it sounds like you’re making unfounded accusations. There is a world of difference between blackmail and a business negotiation.

Rey: Well, why don’t you tell me what gaines was using as leverage against locke, and i can decide for myself.

Lily: Okay, look, the truth is —

Billy: Gaines is an asset. Okay? He is a source, and we protect our sources because, truthfully, this story could be huge for us.

Rey: Okay. Listen, billy, if you’re withholding information that could be linked into an official investigation into ashland locke, that’s a crime. I’m assuming this has something to do with some criminal behavior on ashland’s part.

Billy: We understand that the statute of limitations ran out a long time ago on anything he would’ve done illegal.

Rey: Yes, but the information could still be used in civil suits depending on what it is.

Billy: Exactly. Or tarnish his reputation.

Rey: Which could damage the newman media and newman/locke merger.

Billy: Business pain. But again, nothing illegal. And since gaines wasn’t the victim of foul play, there’s really nothing for you to concern yourself with.

Rey: I hope not.

Billy: Thanks for coming, detective. You have a good night.

Rey: Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, those two meeting.

Sharon: Well, maybe there’s a logical explanation.

Rey: I can’t think of one. I originally thought that billy was using this gaines guy as a bargaining chip to blackmail victor and adam. But maybe adam made his own bargain with gaines.

Sharon: I don’t know why any of this matters.

Rey: The man who destroyed the reputation of victoria newman’s new husband is hanging out with her brother. Something’s wrong here.

Sharon: Can you please put the detective badge away for the evening? Not everything is a crime in the making.

Rey: Well, apparently, locke communications group was born out of a crime. So I can’t help wondering what’s going on.

Sharon: Look, adam and victoria have had a history of animosity between them, and they may have had a thawing lately, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were on opposite sides again.

Rey: Okay. Familial relations aside, locke is a board member of newman media, and this article is gonna affect adam’s company, so why does he seem so calm?

Gaines: I’m gonna do this one last thing, and then I am done. Nothing more, you got it?

Adam: I think I understand.

Gaines: You know, I am sick of you and your whole sordid crew. You and your dad and locke. As far as I’m concerned, you all deserve each other.

Adam: Yeah? What do you deserve, gaines?

Gaines: Every penny you’re putting in my pocket.

Adam: Well, the camera crew’s ready and waiting back at the office, so why don’t you stop whining and go put on the performance of your life?

Lily: Okay, yes, you’re right, I did say, “do whatever it takes,” but that was a knee-jerk, angry reaction after trying to broker a truce with victoria and adam and telling you a million times that blackmail isn’t the answer. Okay? I regretted it right away. Never should’ve said it. We should’ve never let gaines back into our lives.

Billy: It doesn’t matter if we kicked gaines to the curb or not. Victor and adam had this planned all along. They already flipped gaines to their side, knowing that they were gonna hack into my e-mail to authorize the release of the story.

Lily: Why did you even assign the article in the first place? We were never gonna publish it.

Billy: To make the threat seem real. At least then we’d have a story ready to go, okay? But again, it doesn’t matter. They would’ve hacked into chanccomm’s system and made it look like we released the story either way. Those two bastards were two steps ahead the entire time.

Rey: And thank you for reminding me of what really matters. My attention is right back where it should be — on my beautiful, brilliant, charming wife.

Sharon: See? Was that so hard?

Rey: For the rest of the night, I will be completely devoted to you.

Sharon: Oh, well, ’cause that’s all I’m asking for, you know, just your complete and utter devotion.

Rey: Oh, you got it.

Sally: You really expect me not to ask any questions?

Adam: You can ask.

Sally: No answers, though, right?

Adam: Uh…probably not.

Sally: You know, this whole “keeping it close to the vest” schtick you got going on just makes me even more curious and concerned.

Adam: Why do you want to know?

Sally: As I said before, i love my job, and that is why i am very protective of newman media and I don’t want anything to hurt it. Or you. So whatever you’re up to, be careful.

Adam: I’ll do my best. I’m just not used to loyalty like this from employees.

Sally: Yeah, well, it’s not completely altruistic because i would really hate to have to go find another job.

Adam: Well, I appreciate the candor, as well.

Sally: Do more than appreciate me. Whatever your plans are, I can be a valuable asset. I can help.

Billy: Maybe we’re not in as much trouble as you think.

Lily: And why do you think that?

Billy: The lawsuit from ashland. It’s not the first, it won’t be the last. It’s the nature of the business. We already won the suit that victor launched at us because of the exposé on adam.

Lily: That’s because we had facts on our side. We don’t have that luxury right now, especially if gaines is telling the truth about lying about the whole thing, which it sounds like he is.

Billy: But it doesn’t matter if that letter is fake. Ashland committed a crime. We know that much is true, okay? He wouldn’t have confessed to victoria if it wasn’T. He wouldn’t have paid gaines all that money over those years. He wouldn’t have gave him a penny if he didn’t think that he had the original letter from camilla rhodes. Every accusation in that article is true. And I think we need to stand by that.

Lily: Yes, but we need to be practical. We can’t just take a stand on principles. There’s way too much at stake.

Billy: Believe me, I know what is at stake. I know what we could lose here. That’s why I want to keep fighting. We are in the right here, lily.

Lily: No, okay. The smartest thing that we have to do right now is get ahead of the blowback. Print a retraction, let people know that, you know, we were hacked and the article got released without our approval. That’s the best chance we have against a lawsuit.

Billy: Yeah, I mean, that’s the prudent move.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Lily: What? What is it?

Billy: [ Sighs ] Maybe your plan to save our company is too late.

Lily: Oh, no. You don’t get much time for yourself.

Adam: Thank you. And thank you for offering to help with my plan. It’s very generous of you.

Sally: Well, I meant every word of it.

Adam: I have no doubt. I am very grateful that you’re in my corner.

Sally: Well, then put me in, coach. I’m ready to contribute to team newman.

Adam: I would love to see you in action again after your little coup with victoria’s dress. That was a brilliant move.

Sally: Well, there is a lot more where that came from.

Adam: I’m sure. But I need you to focus on the fashion platform. That’s the best way to contribute at the moment.

Sally: Really?

Adam: There’s nothing more to be done with our move against chanccomm. The wheels are already turning and they are spinning very fast.

Sally: Like your conversation with that gaines guy?

Adam: Exactly. And that situation requires all of my attention right now.

Sally: So it is serious.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You have nothing to worry about. Everything is going according to my well-conceived plan. And very soon, we won’t have to worry about billy abbott or chanccomm ever again.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Nikki: Oh, my goodness, who are you texting at this hour?

Victor: My sweetheart, just some newman media business i have to take care of.

Nikki: Alright, I’ll let you get to it. Don’t stay up too late.

Victor: I’ll be up as soon as this is finished, okay?

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Gaines: I would like to publicly recant everything attributed to me in the recent chanccomm article regarding ashland locke. The letter quoted in that article was also a fake. The fact is, I had a letter fabricated from camilla rhodes explaining why she left her precious ashland nothing in her will. But those were my words and not the words of mrs. Rhodes. The fact is, I have held a long-standing grudge against ashland locke, a hatred, really, so I made up those allegations and I told them to billy abbott and lily winters at chanccomm. Now, I still hate ashland locke, but he is, in fact, a victim in this matter because those lies should never have been published. Now, I regret my part in this deception, but I believe that chanccomm should have executed their due diligence and fact-checked what I told them. And if they had, this article would never have been published. But they didn’t do any digging into my claims. And I believe they had ulterior motives for that. I feel, ethically speaking, that I had a moral obligation to come forward with the truth because we, as a society, deserve more from our institutions.

Billy: I mean, enough of that. I’m not gonna get lectured about the sanctity of free press from that jackass.

Lily: You know, you almost have to admire the thoroughness of the newmans’ plan.

Billy: They have made ashland locke bulletproof. I mean, it doesn’t matter what comes out about that letter anymore. It’s been discredited in the public eye. He’s gonna come out smelling like a rose.

Lily: Yep. And they’ve painted us as immoral, reckless villains.

Adam: Well, why don’t you go ahead? I’ll — I’ll take care of the check. I’ll see you in the morning.

Sally: You gonna linger here a little longer? Why is that?

Adam: I just have to have a word with detective rosales for a moment.

Sally: Ooh, sounds official. Getting more curious by the minute.

Adam: I will see you in the morning.

Sally: Alright, see ya.

Adam: Bye. Good evening. Can I buy an after-dinner drink?

Sharon: Well, um…

Adam: Oh, don’t worry, i won’t be joining you. I’ll just have the bartender send it over.

Rey: Why you got to rush off? Got to go meet up with your buddy, jesse gaines?

Adam: [ Scoffs ] He’s no buddy of mine, believe me.

Rey: I can’T.

Adam: Well, of course not. But what you witnessed was just purely a chance encounter. I took the opportunity to rake him over the coals for what he’s trying to do to ashland.

Rey: [ Laughs ] That seemed like a pretty gentle raking. And we just happened to see his press conference at your office. So was that really just a chance encounter?

Adam: I think there is something that you need to know, detective.

Gaines: I feel, ethically speaking, that I had to come forward with the truth.

Nikki: You know all about this, don’t you?

Victor: My business to know.

Nikki: What about victoria and ashland? Were they in the loop?

Victor: Mm-hmm. Ashland was in on it from the beginning. Mm-hmm. But don’t you worry, neither ashland nor victoria will be hurt by this.

Nikki: How can you be so sure?

Victor: There was a risk of ashland’s story being exposed by billy boy abbott on his terms. That would have been very bad for both of them, and for our company. So adam and I stepped in. We got rid of the problem.

Nikki: But you see, I do worry because I know that everything gaines just said is a lie, and what he originally said about ashland’s past is true.

Victor: Well, the problem is that billy boy abbott was gonna use that against us, and that was gonna be a mistake.

Nikki: I think that you often underestimate him, and the problem is that he is a lot like you, especially when he is focused on something.

Victor: What do you mean billy boy abbott is a lot like me? What are you talking about?

Nikki: Okay, what I meant to say is that when he feels like he’s in a corner, he’s gonna go on the attack, just like you. And for that reason, I think this situation is far from over.

Billy: We are in the right. We have truth on our side. We’re not the bad guys here.

Lily: Billy, you tried to blackmail victor and adam.

Billy: That was to protect our company, okay? I was trying to stop them from coming after us. It was a noble cause.

Lily: It doesn’t matter. It’s still blackmail. As soon as you got with gaines and tried to use that against them, we were no longer the good guys.

Billy: I thought you weren’t looking to cast blame here.

Lily: No, I’m — I’m not, I just —

[ Sighs ] I had a bad feeling about this. I knew there was something too convenient about his escape story and showing up on our doorstep.

Billy: Yep. I wish I would’ve listened to you. But the good news is we know everything they have against us now. I mean, there’s nothing else they can throw at us.

Lily: I disagree. I think there is more to come. I think there’s an even bigger shoe that’s about to drop.

Sharon: Adam, we just wanted to have a nice, quiet dinner. I don’t think there’s any reason for you to discuss your meeting with gaines.

Adam: I’m sorry if I intruded on your evening. Uh…but this will just take a minute, and then I will leave. It’s important.

Rey: Okay. What’d you want to tell me?

Adam: Well, when chanccomm published that nasty article, billy contacted me, threatening to release it.

Rey: What sort of threat?

Adam: Look, I’m not gonna lie, newman media has been looking for ways to edge out chanccomm. We’ve been aggressive. My father doesn’t care for competition.

Rey: Yeah, I’m sure he doesn’T.

Adam: Yeah, so billy came to us, trying to use the article as leverage. In other words, he tried to blackmail us. Now, that can’t be legal, can it? Oh, right. The patent.
