Recap written by Christine

Nick and Abby chatted at Society. He mentioned that his call to Chance went to voicemail, and she said it was probably because Chance got called into work. She told him about Dominic’s mini birthday party. He was disappointed she didn’t invite Dom’s favorite uncle. She promised they’d have a larger party with the whole family once things calmed down. He said she was crazy if she thought things would ever calm down with the Newmans. Her face fell, and he asked if she was okay.

Abby was okay, but she was worried about Nick. He said he was okay. She said that sounded a lot like the assurances Chance used to make when he came home from Spain, when he claimed he was fine, but he was having a hard time. Nick admitted things were weighing on him. She said he was justified in protecting their sister. He knew, but it was hard knowing he took a man’s life. Abby said Nick was a good person who did what he had to do. It made her angry that Ashland was still tormenting them from beyond the grave. He said their dad didn’t seem tortured with regret. She said that Victor didn’t second guess his decisions. She shared that Chance was struggling.

Abby said she’d hoped Chance would be able to put the guilt behind him, but it was still haunting him. Nick hated to hear that. Abby was trying hard to be supportive – Chance was all about integrity, but she saw integrity in what Chance did. She saw the value in family, but Chance saw it as a conflict of interest. She said Chance had to leave for work while they were hashing things out. That was probably good since things were getting tense. She said that it was clear to her that Chance did a good thing by standing by his family, but every time she brought it up, it hit a nerve. Nick suggested that Abby stop bringing it up. Abby didn’t understand why Chance didn’t see things her way. She worried about what would happen if Chance kept regretting this, or worse, if he reopened the case. Nick said he’d talk to Chance and try to ease his mind. She didn’t want him pressuring Chance. He said he wouldn’t. He understood where Abby was coming from. He and Phyllis had clashed whenever he showed loyalty to the family, especially Victor. He told Abby not to let this come between her and Chance. That was what worried her. He assured her it’d be okay, and they hugged.

Later, Abby handed Nick a bag of the Cuban shortbread cookies Christian liked. She thanked him for listening to her when he had so much on his plate. He talked about Victoria’s ambitious plans for Newman. Abby remembered what it was like working with their sister. That was why Abby liked running the restaurant so much. Nick said he was always there for Abby, day or night.

At the rooftop bar, Chelsea told Connor by phone that she loved and missed him. Once the call ended, she couldn’t hold back her tears. Chance walked up and checked on her. She dabbed at her eyes, and they admitted neither of them were good at hiding their emotions. He said that Abby always saw right through him. Chelsea thought Chance and Abby were lucky to have each other. The person Chance was there to see wasn’t here, so he asked to sit with Chelsea, and she said yes.

Chelsea said she’d get past this moment. She thought people made assumptions about her because she was in mental hospital once. Chance promised he wasn’t judging – he just noticed she seemed distressed, which happened to everyone. He was seeing a therapist for his own mental health issues. He said he got pushed into seeking mental help. She said she did too. He was glad he did because the therapist was really helping. She said her therapist had only been so-so. She was eager to hear some words of wisdom from Chance. He said things didn’t always work out the way you thought they should, even if you played by the rules. He added that you could either waste time and energy getting upset or accept that it was life and move on. It was easier said than done, he conceded. She said people kept telling her to put one foot in front of the other, but once she chose a path, it got cut off before she could travel down it. He understood and he said that once you’d started down the path, you couldn’t reverse course, because the way back was blocked. He looked for the tiny moments in life that gave you hope. Usually, it was something about his son. That was true for her too.

Chance admitted he didn’t have all the answers. Chelsea was impressed by how open Chance was about his struggles. She was going to get the next round of drinks, but the guy he was meeting showed up, so he excused himself. A curious Chelsea kept glancing over at Chance’s table. Later, the man left, and Chance went back to Chelsea. She couldn’t help asking if the guy was an informant. He wouldn’t go into detail, but he said that as of today, he’d close all of Rey’s cases. He said he could tell his buddy that he did it. Chelsea got choked up – she thought it was a special tribute to Rey. They both missed Rey.

Chelsea went home to her hotel suite and cried.

Chance went to Sharon at Crimson Lights to tell her he’d closed Rey’s cases. She thanked him. He said it was an honor to work with her husband and finish what Rey started. He considered Rey a role model. Sharon said Rey had a lot of respect for Chance and he’d been happy to work with someone so honorable. They got a booth and reminisced about Rey. Sharon talked about getting to know Rey when she worked at the police station as a victim’s advocate. Every morning when she got to work, Rey was sharpening pencils. Chance was also aware of that part of Rey’s morning routine.

Allie and Noah basked in the afterglow in her bed. She told him that moving to Genoa City had more upsides than she ever expected. He asked if that included him, and she said yes. He stopped himself from making a lame joke because his attempts at humor almost tanked their relationship. She told him she’d acquired the taste for his sense of humor. He tickled her, and they went in for round two. Later, he held her, and she playfully told him she didn’t want to hear his lame joke anymore. He said that was good, so she wouldn’t lose respect for him. She asked if he killed his last relationship with one too many bad puns. Then she apologized. He said it was fine. She wanted to hear about his ex. He said he didn’t want to be the kind of guy who’d trash an ex to her. She understood, but she was still curious. He said he’d been really confused during his last relationship because he couldn’t ever predict how his ex would react to things. Sometimes topics that were fine one day would make his ex get angry the next day. Their relationship turned into a giant guessing game, and he never knew where he stood. Allie thought that sounded exhausting. Noah said things were really good in the beginning, but in the end, he felt like he was walking on eggshells. Allie asked if Noah loved this other woman. He’d thought he did, but in hindsight, it was a toxic relationship – one that you didn’t know how to handle, but you also didn’t know how to let it go. Allie said she hadn’t dated that many guys and the relationships she’d been in had mostly been awkward. Noah had awkward relationships too, that didn’t have a spark or passion. Allie said this relationship with Noah wasn’t like that. Noah wanted to focus on the future instead of the past. They kissed.

Allie and Noah got dressed and came downstairs kissing, and it was a little awkward because they ran into Traci. She chatted and Noah left. Allie was embarrassed. Traci said there was nothing to be embarrassed about – she said if Allie read any of her novels, she’d know it’d take more than that to make Traci blush. Traci said she thought they should have something to eat after all the strenuous activities of the day. Allie was blushing all over again, and she said Traci had a real wicked streak. Traci said she liked to keep it hidden to surprise people. Traci thought Allie and Noah were adorable, and she could see how much Allie cared about him. Allie said it was ridiculous how happy she was. Part of her wondered if it was too good to be true, because she was still in that infatuation stage. She wondered if she was setting herself up to be hurt and if it was smarter to be cautious.

Traci said Allie should enjoy every minute of this happy giddy phase. She said some lucky couples could find a way to make it last a lifetime, but for most people it moved into something deeper, and that was all the more reason to really enjoy the here and now. Traci said Allie had a difficult year – she lost her dad, sold her family home and moved across the country to live with the family she never knew she had. She thought it was so wonderful that life had evened out for Allie. Allie said she cared for Noah, she felt safe with him and it was never boring. She’d never experienced anything like this. Traci said to enjoy this for what it was, leave some room for what might become, and not to talk herself out of experiencing something rapturous in the name of caution. Allie promised to take this to heart. She said she needed to give herself permission to be happy. Traci asked if Allie was nervous because she’d had some bad relationships. Allie hadn’t dated much, and the relationships she did have were duds. Traci had known Noah from the day he was born, and she could vouch for him being an amazing young man.

Adam went to Jack’s office and accepted the co-CEO position. They talked about the contract, and Adam was happy with what he was being offered. He’d start tomorrow. Adam asked how the other Abbotts would react. He didn’t want to cause any difficulties for Jack. Jack said he’d convinced them this was a good idea. Adam commented that there were multiple people who needed convincing – he assumed it was Ashley, Kyle… Jack interjected that it was most of his relatives. He was just happy Adam didn’t take the other project, which he assumed had something to do with getting back at Victor. Adam said getting back at Victor was more of a hobby than a job. Jack thought it was past time for Adam to let go of that obsession. Billy dropped in hoping to go have a drink with his brother. He was unhappy when he realized he’d walked in on Jack hiring Adam. Billy suggested Jack could change his mind. Adam said that was true – Jack could still back out. Jack’s mind was made up.

Jack had to take a call, so Billy and Adam left the office. Billy didn’t know what Adam was planning, but he was going to be watching him. Adam didn’t know why Billy cared who Jack hired, when Billy hadn’t worked at Jabot in years. Billy said this was his family company and his father’s legacy. Billy stated that Adam destroyed everything he touched. Adam said if Jabot could survive Billy, it could survive anything. Jack walked out and said legal was drawing up the paperwork. He wanted to take Adam for a drink, and he invited Billy, who said he’d rather have a root canal.

Adam and Jack went to Society and told Abby and Nick their news. Abby congratulated Adam and asked how long this had been in the works. Jack said it took him awhile to talk Adam into this. Jack said he conducted a nationwide search to find a replacement for Kyle, and it turned out he already knew the right candidate for the job. Nick knew Summer was excited to work with her husband again. Nick asked if Adam had this position in mind when they talked earlier. Adam said no. Jack said he sprung this on Adam a few days ago, and Adam turned him down flat. Adam said he was reluctant at first, but he realized this was a beneficial move. Jack felt Jabot was lucky to have Adam. Nick said Adam would’ve had more autonomy if he’d stayed on as CEO of Newman Media. Adam asked if anyone had autonomy working under Victor Newman. Nick recalled Adam saying he’d been planning to go in a different direction. Jack said he and Adam had talked about breaking old patterns. Nick thought a move like this would be driven by rage and resentment – to give up what Adam had at Newman Media and take a lesser position at a different company. Nick meant no offense to Jack. Jack didn’t take any. He called Newman Media’s loss his gain. Nick shook his head in disapproval.

Nick went to Crimson Lights and found Chance. Sharon stepped away so they could talk. Nick said Adam apparently had a change of heart about holding the investigation over their heads, and he’d taken a job with Jack. Nick said maybe Adam was sincere. Chance hoped so. All of this was getting to him. Nick said he talked to Abby, and it didn’t seem like she knew about Adam’s vendetta. Chance saw no point in stressing Abby out about it. Nick said Abby was very worried, and Chance needed to talk to her. Chance thanked Nick for the heads up and left. Later, Noah went to Crimson Lights and saw his parents sitting together. He told them he was falling in love.

Chance went to Society and got Abby’s attention through the window. She went outside, and he told her he was sorry for how he spoke to her earlier and for just leaving. Nothing was more important to him than her and Dominic and their family. He said he’d do everything he could not to lose sight of that again. She accepted the apology and they kissed.

Jack and Adam went back to Jabot. Jack was expecting Adam’s contract to be on the desk, but it wasn’t. Jack went to legal and left Adam in the office. Adam tried out the CEO’s seat.

Chloe: Thanks for meeting with us, nick, and we’re really excited to pitch you some of our ideas.

Nick: Yeah. Let’s — let’s see what you got.

Chloe: Okay. So last week we really started strategizing on how to create more synergy between the newman media divisions, mostly within the entertainment sector. And we’re also wondering if we might be able to converge entertainment and news by producing some topical talk shows that check both of those boxes.

Sally: We want to go big, and our entertainment- and news-oriented divisions are doing really well nationally, so we were thinking that it might be time to focus on expanding to an international audience.

Chloe: Yeah, and that would mean creating content targeting those markets — europe, asia, and south america.

Sally: And if you like any of these general ideas, we can always come back with a more detailed plan on how to execute them.

Chloe: Yeah, we know that it’s a bold direction, but we really believe in it. So what do you think?

Chelsea: Hey.

Adam: Hi.

Chelsea: I guess you handled whatever that text message was earlier that sent you off and running without explanation.

Adam: Yeah, it actually turned out to be good news. Something that I was hoping for finally paid off.

Chelsea: Huh.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Chelsea: Well, it’s great when life takes a turn like that.

Adam: Yeah, it sure is.

Chelsea: Okay. I’m too tired to keep this up.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Same.

Chelsea: Alright, let’s just come clean. Who wants to go first?

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Jack: [ Humming ]

Traci: What has gotten into you?

Jack: What do you mean?

Traci: [ Chuckles ] You’re so happy.

Jack: Well, I’d like to think it’s not that rare or shocking that I have a smile on my face.

Traci: It’s not, but you’re smiling a lot more lately.

Jack: I didn’t know you were counting smiles.

Traci: And you are humming when you’re going through the mail.

Jack: I didn’t do that.

Traci: You did. And if I’m not mistaken, I overheard you singing with harrison.

Jack: That I will cop to. That kid can turn anyone’s mood around.

Traci: [ Chuckles ] So is it your grandson that’s got you so chipper, or is it something or someone else?

Diane: Hello, nikki.

Nikki: How are you, diane?

Diane: I’m — I’m fine. Thank you.

Nikki: Glad to hear it.

Diane: And you?

Nikki: I’m well. Keeping busy at newman enterprises. I spoke with summer recently. She says you’re doing a wonderful job at marchetti so far.

Diane: Is that right? Well, that’S…nice to hear.

[ Scoffs ] Is there a hidden pie about to smack me in the face or should I brace myself for something worse?

Talia: Phyllis.

Phyllis: Hey.

Talia: You neglected to tell me you own the place.

Phyllis: Oh, yes.

Talia: I’m impressed.

Phyllis: Hmm. I’m glad you’re enjoying your time here. Yeah, the grand phoenix, it was a labor of love, you know? Ah, there were a lot of ups and downs, but totally worth it. It’s coming to an end, I’m afraid. I just sold it.

Talia: Interesting.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Talia: You’re moving on. Why is that?

Phyllis: Well, I work at marchetti now.

Talia: Where diane jenkins works? Not a coincidence, I’m guessing. Is there an agenda there?

Phyllis: It’s pretty strategic. And completely justified. That’s why I wanted to talk to you. Want your clothes to smell freshly

provided by… breakthrough heartburn…

Nick: Well, I really like what I’ve heard. And speaking of synergy, you two obviously make a very strong team.

Sally: I couldn’t agree more.

Chloe: I’ll make it unanimous.

Nick: I’d like to hear more about your process.

Chloe: Yeah, we — we each bring our ideas to the table, and then we brainstorm, flesh them out together. But make no mistake, sally is our fearless leader.

Nick: I get it. Chloe, would you mind too much if I had a minute alone with the fearless leader?

Chloe: Oh, sure. I will make myself scarce. And if we get the go-ahead, I will start implementing these ideas right away.

Nick: Thank you, chloe.

Chloe: Thank you.

Nick: Sit down.

Sally: Is there a problem with our pitches that you didn’t want to mention in front of chloe?

Nick: No. I loved them, each and every one of them. I meant what I said. This is about you and adam.

Chelsea: So we agreed to tell each other what’s going on.

Adam: We did.

Chelsea: Go ahead.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Ladies first.

Chelsea: Oh, oldest trick in the book. The first one to spill is always put at a disadvantage.

Adam: Are we taking advantage of each other now?

Chelsea: No. I guess we’re on neutral ground. God, you are so stubborn, you know that?

Adam: So I have been told.

Chelsea: Fine. I’ll go. I just recorded my final podcast episode with billy.

Adam: Ah. So a celebration is in order now that you dropped the dead weight?

Chelsea: I’m not continuing the podcast.

Adam: You didn’t take my suggestion that you should bring in a new co-host and someone who’s not a royal jerk?

Chelsea: Billy — who’s not a jerk, by the way — suggested the same thing. He even offered to help me find a new co-host.

Adam: Well, you are obviously so talented that even billy abbott can see it and he stands to make money from it. Doesn’t mean he’s not a jerk.

Chelsea: Well, I decided against it. This isn’t about billy. It’s about me.

Adam: Okay. Sorry. So, in other words, your career is in limbo.

Chelsea: Yeah. I just don’t understand why I can’t find something that I’m able to handle. Find something that doesn’t get yanked away from me before I settle in. You know, working for a global fashion icon like angelina marchetti was probably too much for me. I dove back into the fashion world too soon, but then I found something that excited me. Something that grounded me with this podcast. And then billy, he just quits on me.

Adam: Yeah, I can — I can relate. I mean, I feel like I had the perfect future at newman dangled in front of me more times than I can count, only to be yanked away. And frankly, I’m just — I’m exhausted.

Chelsea: Mm, I know you better than that. You may be tired at the moment, but you’re not defeated. And I’ve seen this before.

Adam: Seen what?

Chelsea: The look in your eye, the iciness in your tone. That’s pure rage.

Traci: You know, if you were a character in one of my novels, my editor would be insisting that I explain your mood.

Jack: I am not a character in one of your novels. I am your brother. And my moods don’t have to be explained or scrutinized or novelized for that point.

Traci: Come on, you would make a great character — leading man, romantic hero.

Jack: Don’t even think about it.

Traci: And you’re avoiding my original question.

Jack: Oh, I know what you’re fishing for, and I’m not biting.

Traci: Alright. Can’t blame a girl for trying.

Jack: You know what? I am thrilled that kyle and summer and harrison are back in town, great, exciting new things are happening at jabot, and my family is mercifully at peace. Does that perhaps satisfy your curiosity?

Traci: [ Chuckles ] Nobody would have believed that peaceful part of this a few months ago when diane first got in touch with you.

Jack: No, that’s true. Not long ago, I thought diane was only capable of causing trouble. But you know what? Kyle is healing. I can’t even believe I’m saying that, but it’s true. And for that, I am very grateful.

Jack: Is this you in the process of forgiving diane?

Nikki: You have a fear of flying pies. That’s funny.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’d like to get the insults and attacks over with before your food is served. Who knows what else might get hurled across the table? And I’m wearing a new outfit.

Nikki: I am so glad I ordered the beet soup.

Diane: Ha ha.

Nikki: Oh, lighten up. I’m kidding.

Diane: [ Sighs ] So where is this seemingly laissez faire attitude coming from?

Nikki: I’ve just decided that it’s easier to ignore you than to engage. Although it is harder when you come up to my table.

Diane: Let’s be honest. If I hadn’t walked over here, you would have confronted me.

Nikki: Ah, wrong, as usual. You’re just not worth my energy. I have a very full life to live.

Diane: Oh, and I’m sure the constant upheaval at newman enterprises is keeping you very busy. At this point, are there any members of your family that haven’t been ceo?

Nikki: Well, that is so sweet of you to be concerned. But the company is thriving, so you need only be concerned about your workplace.

Diane: Oh. Oh, marchetti is doing great. Thanks in large part to my son’s leadership.

Nikki: Uh-huh. Well, I think my granddaughter had a little something to do with that as well.

Diane: Absolutely. Summer is a wonderful leader, and she’s been so good to me. I really appreciate that she’s kept an open mind and hasn’t just accepted all the things that you and phyllis have told her about me.

Nikki: Well, poor summer really shouldn’t have to deal with you at all, but I’m confident that you will self-sabotage and leave genoa city in disgrace without any help from me at all. Now, I will admit that in the beginning I felt the need to rush that process along. But you know what? It’s really not worth my time, because I know that you are capable of blowing up your life all on your own.

Diane: Wow. This new and enlightened version of you is almost cuddly. I’m curious, though. Phyllis seems to have made a turn as well, selling her beloved hotel to work at the same company as I do. Come on, nikki. You and phyllis might talk a good game about letting go, but something’s clearly afoot. Hi, I’m denise.

Talia: So does nikki know about your plan?

Phyllis: Oh, yeah. She’s in on it, for sure. You know, we’re keeping it on the down low. You have to be crafty when you deal with diane. You have to think on your feet. So that’s why I think in your case, you should just keep it to your cover story, you know, your piece on ashland locke.

Talia: So what exactly is going down with diane?

Phyllis: Well, what’s going to go down with diane is she’s going to get into trouble at her job. But it won’t be because of anything that I did. I mean, talia, she’s in way over her head. She’s going to run into trouble. She’s going to screw up and she’s going to get fired.

Diane: So what do you and phyllis have up your sleeve?

Nikki: Diane, you deluded narcissist, not everything is about you, dear. Did it ever cross your mind that phyllis simply wants to work with her daughter? Just as I love working with nicholas and victoria, and I assume you love working with kyle?

Diane: Mm-hmm, I could believe that, had I not witnessed how much phyllis loved owning that hotel.

Nikki: Mm. Well, she’s never really been very successful hanging on to anything. Careers, men.

Diane: Oh, insulting her. Very clever strategy.

Nikki: I’m sorry?

Diane: You’re hoping that if you say mean and nasty things about phyllis, it’ll convince me that you’re not working together.

Nikki: I am simply explaining to you why she wanted to work at marchetti, so you can forget about your conspiracy theory.

Diane: If there was truly nothing going on, you wouldn’t care what I thought.

Nikki: You know what, diane? I think all those years living in hiding have made you paranoid.

Diane: Now you’re deflecting, trying to get me on the defensive.

Nikki: I am merely expressing concern for your well-being.

Diane: Oh, come on. You being polite and considerate is the biggest red flag of all.

Nikki: Being civil is just easier. It’s less exhausting because everybody has grown bored with your drama and we’ve moved on.

Diane: My drama? You and phyllis are the drama queens of genoa city.

Nikki: Now, dear, unless you are planning a better exit than your murder turned out to be, you’re just going to have to accept the fact that the novelty of your very dramatic return has just worn off. You’re not the center of attention anymore. Nobody is really thinking about you at all. Although I almost wish I could be there when you finally realize that, because, really, how sad and pathetic will that be.

Jack: I’m not sure forgiveness is the right word. I’m — I’m not sure what is.

Traci: Well, what would forgiveness look like for you and diane?

Jack: Uh…

Allie: Hey, you guys.

Jack: Hey!

Noah: How’s it going?

Allie: Oh, my gosh. I am so glad you guys are both here. We have some great news.

Sally: What would you like to know?

Nick: Victoria told me about adam’s attempt to get you to publish evidence that he just happened upon regarding ashland’s death.

Sally: I know the truth about what went down that night. And I understand why you were so sick over it.

Nick: It was our goal to keep the circle of people who knew about it very small. But now, thanks to adam, you are burdened with that secret.

Sally: You don’t have to worry about me. When I want to keep my mouth shut, I am an impenetrable fortress. Not only am I not going to publish the story, I will never tell anyone about it, ever.

Nick: You’ve proven that you can be trusted.

Sally: Well, I’m sorry for how difficult things must have been. And still might be.

Nick: I just — you know, I did what I did because I was protecting my sister.

Sally: And I’m sure victoria is very grateful for what you did. Frankly, the town is breathing a heck of a lot easier without ashland around. And honestly, if your father hadn’t gotten involved and everyone found out, they would probably give you the key to the city or something.

Nick: No. I don’t know about that.

Sally: Well, in my experience, truly brave people are usually modest. I will say one thing about the newmans. You guys can be intimidating, but you really go to the mat for each other. Spending more time around your family, I understand less about adam’s attitude towards you all.

Nick: Sally, I just hope you know how genuinely appreciative I am that you turned adam down and that you went to victoria and gave her a heads up.

Sally: Well, there was never any risk of adam getting me to do his bidding. And as far as going to see victoria, you should all just be on guard about adam’s state of mind. He’s in pursuit of one thing — revenge.

Adam: You know more than anybody that rage is my — my baseline emotion. I’m — I’m like a 2 right now. So it can get a lot worse.

Chelsea: That’s what I’m afraid of. You talking about me going down a rabbit hole, but what about you? I see you walking around all calm, but I know something is burning under the surface.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: You’re feeling wounded these days. Makes you want to lash out. You want to hurt the people that have hurt you. That side of you is back with a vengeance. I know how dangerous that can get. You gave me some good advice earlier, so let me ask you… is there any way I can talk you off the ledge? I brought in ensure max protein

Allie: As I may have mentioned, noah is looking for a space for the amazing club that he wants to open.

Jack: Uh-huh.

Allie: And guess what.

Traci: He found a good location.

Allie: Not just a good one. The best.

Adam: Yep, the glam club will officially be opening its doors at the grand phoenix as soon as the chancellor-winters acquisition of the hotel is finalized.

Jack: Phyllis actually went through with the sale. Even with her job at marchetti, I wasn’t sure she could bear to let go of it.

Allie: Noah pitched the idea to lily, and she loved it.

Noah: Oh, no hesitation. She was on board from the get-go.

Allie: It was like the perfect fit.

Jack: This sounds like a celebration. How about lunch at society?

Noah: Yeah, sounds good.

Jack: We’re in.

Adam: Thanks for trying to look out for me, but you can’t help me now. This is between me and my dad, okay? I let him use me yet again and toss me aside.

Chelsea: Pushing you out of the company in favor of victoria is wrong, but sadly predictable. It’s a signature victor move.

Adam: Mm. No, you don’t know the half of what dear old dad has done this time, okay? He pulled another one of his classic maneuvers, and once again, just dredging up a lot of damage from the past.

Chelsea: What do you mean?

Adam: Ashland locke didn’t die in that car crash.

Chelsea: What? I thought the investigation was closed.

Adam: Well, it was, but that’s because dad made sure of it.

Chelsea: So, how did ashland die?

Adam: Apparently, ashland turned up at victoria’s in some sort of a rage, and to protect our sister, nick accidentally killed him.

Chelsea: Oh, my god. No wonder victoria was so tense when I saw her the other day.

Adam: Yeah, it was a bad situation all around. But what does dad do? He covers it up, moves the body so he can keep the newman hands clean.

Chelsea: Did victor tell you all this?

Adam: Well, never mind how i found out about it. The point is, he covered it up. Chelsea.

Chelsea: Wow. I see so many parallels between ashland’s death and A.J. Montalvo’s back in kansas.

Adam: Yeah, if he got away with it once, why not try it again?

Chelsea: I mean, I’m sure this brings up a lot for you, but I — I thought you found peace with it.

Adam: How do you make peace with finding out that you’re a child killer and nobody told you? I mean, you could pretend, stuff it down, but it never goes away. I mean, the fact that they kept this from me for all these years — it just — it did me a lot more harm than good.

Chelsea: I think he was trying to protect you from getting hurt. I think he wanted to help you because you’re his son, the same way you would go to extremes to protect connor and maybe even me, even though we’re not together anymore.

Nick: I appreciate the warning, but this isn’t the first time adam’s tried to get revenge on our family. I was really hoping that after he gave faith one of his kidneys that he would turn a corner. But obviously I was wrong about that. You know, I would like to give my brother the benefit of the doubt, but he’s made his position crystal-clear.

Sally: I find that really sad.

Nick: It is reality. I’m sure you only got to see the good side of adam when you guys were together, you know, but my family has had to deal with the best and worst of adam. And I don’t like saying this to you, sally, ’cause I know you care about him but I think — I think you’re better off not being in a relationship with him. And now please welcome ana montoya.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Talia: Can I ask, why are you rooting for diane jenkins to fail?

Phyllis: I know you did your research, and I know you read that article in restless style from years ago detailing all these things she did. I mean, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Talia: Really? Because the things in that story were out there — home-wrecking, arson, sperm stealing?

Phyllis: Sperm stealing. Yes. Completely out there. I mean, if I told you everything else, your head would start spinning and it wouldn’t stop spinning.

Talia: I want to know everything.

Phyllis: Alright. Have a seat. Get comfortable. I’ll tell you everything. And honestly, I’m not holding back. Where do you want to start? Multiple blackmails? Child abandonment? Faking her own death?

Nikki: I certainly hope you didn’t mistake my earlier civility as an invitation to join me.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Certainly not.

Jack: Ohh, that cannot be good.

Traci: Well, you know, why don’t we just leave them alone, okay? Maybe we — [ Sighs ] Maybe not.

Jack: Hi.

Nikki: Hello, jack.

Diane: Hi. Traci.

Traci: Hello, ladies.

Jack: Are we interrupting some kind of tte–tte?

Nikki: Oh, no, not at all. I’m just finishing my lunch at my table for one. Diane is just leaving.

Diane: Waiting for takeout.

Jack: Everything alright?

Nikki: Really, jack?

Diane: [ Laughs ]

Sally: As many times as i have told myself things are over with adam and knowing it’s for the best, part of me still has feelings for him. And maybe, yeah, it’s because i mainly did see the good parts of him, and the bad parts… honestly, I could relate to because, in a certain way, I’ve lived in adam’s shoes. I have felt burned and insulted by people and was so determined to make them regret it. I mean, sure, yes, that wasn’t the only way adam and I were alike, but it definitely sparked a connection.

Nick: I’m aware of some of the stunts you’ve pulled in the past. I’d like to believe you’ve left all that behind.

Sally: I would, too. But I won’t lie. I definitely get the urge from time to time to deliver a swift dose of payback to those who wronged me, not wait for karma to kick them in the ass. But that’s natural, right?

[ Both laugh ]

Nick: Yeah, I think, uh — I think we’ve all been there, you know, some of us more than others.

Sally: Well, my point is, i haven’t acted on any of those darker impulses. And maybe the turning of the tides was people actually having faith in me — or at least willing to give me a fair chance…the way you have. It really made a difference for me.

Nick: Yeah. I’d like to believe that a little faith could create a change in adam. You know, I’d like to have a brother that I could have a bond with or trust. But unfortunately, adam has proven over and over again that his turnarounds just don’t last very long.

Adam: You’re right. I would move heaven and earth for connor. I would break any law. Hell, I would move a dozen bodies if I thought that it would genuinely help him. And I would probably move a couple corpses for connor’s mother, as well.

Chelsea: Well, hopefully it doesn’t come to that, but i appreciate it.

Adam: But that doesn’t mean that you can pick and choose the things that victor does which are bad and good because even when he does something decent, it comes at a price always.

Chelsea: Oh, as someone who went to the mental hospital instead of jail because of him, I am very well aware of how he operates.

Adam: Yes. You understand. But he’ll never admit it. The man will never apologize. And I think it’s time someone forced his hand right here, right now. And I happen to have the power and the evidence to do it. (Buzz)

starting with the delicious

taste of honey nut cheerios,

Allie: Was I gushing too much with jack and traci earlier?

Noah: No, it was the perfect amount of gush.

Allie: Uh-oh.

Noah: Okay, that looks like it could turn into a knockdown, drag-out fight any second now.

Allie: Yep. With my grandfather trapped in the middle.

Noah: If things get gnarly, my money’s on grandma. That lady’s tough as nails.

Allie: Yeah, but diane’s sneaky. And I wouldn’t count traci out. That woman’s been through some things. Hey, promise me this. No matter how hostile it gets inside there, it is not gonna spoil this amazing day for the two of us.

Noah: It won’T.

Nikki: I was minding my own business, and then diane appeared uninvited. Yet I couldn’t have been more civil. Isn’t that right, diane?

Diane: That’s true. Nikki has been pleasantly, shockingly, bizarrely even-keeled.

Nikki: So, yes, jack, everything is fine. See you. Hi!

Noah: Hey, grandma. You heading out?

Nikki: Uh, yeah. It’s getting a little crowded in here.

Noah: Okay, well, we’ll have to catch up some other time, but before you go, I want to introduce you to allie.

Nikki: Oh, it’s a pleasure. I’ve heard so much about you from noah.

Allie: Same here. It’s so lovely meeting you.

Nikki: Well, I hope that we can spend some time together soon.

Allie: I would love that.

Nikki: You two have fun.

Noah: Okay. I’ll check in with you later.

Nikki: Alright, sweetie.

Noah: Night.

Jack: I suppose I did jump to the conclusion that nikki was harassing you.

Diane: Not a bad guess.

Allie: Hi, everyone. Thank you again for offering to take us out to celebrate.

Jack: You are most welcome.

Allie: Should we get a table?

Nikki: You know what? Let’s — let’s do that.

Diane: What’s the occasion?

Allie: We’re celebrating my boyfriend’s new club.

Diane: Oh! Wow. That’s wonderful.

Jack: Would you like to join us?

Diane: Well, normally I would love to, but I have a job that I’m devoted to, and I need to get back to work. Ah, looks like my take-out is ready. Noah, congratulations. I can’t wait to check out the club once it opens. Bye.

Jack: Bye.

Traci: [ Sighs ]

[ Clears throat ]

Jack: What?

Traci: I think our table’s ready.

Sally: Of course I understand you have a longer history with adam than I do. I’m not pleading his case here. I just… I’m worried about him. That’s why I couldn’t keep quiet about it.

Adam: Well, vick and I are grateful for that.

Sally: Telling her was in everyone’s best interest, including adam’S. I wish someone had told me when I was hell-bent on revenge ’cause that is a road I never want to go down again.

Nick: Well, I think you’ve come a long way.

Sally: It’s a daily journey, right?

Chelsea: I get your drive and your frustration. I’ve been there, as you know. You want justice, and you’ll go to dark places to get it.

Adam: But that — that’s the thing, chelsea. This isn’t dark. All I’m trying to do is expose the truth to light.

Chelsea: We both know there’s a lot more to it. If you try to hurt victor, he’s gonna go after you. He’s like you in that regard. Reigniting this battle will be a mistake for you and for connor.

Adam: Okay, I can and I will keep connor completely out of it.

Chelsea: We both know that’s not possible. Connor loves his father and his grandfather. He’ll be stuck in the middle. There’s no way he can be immune to the fallout. You don’t want to traumatize your kid, do not start a war with his grandfather.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: You want to beat victor, beat him by being a better dad. Focus on the future. Focus on connor. Stop keeping score and stop holding grudges. Beat victor by letting go.

Talia: I can’t believe one person could do so much in one lifetime.

Phyllis: I know. Can you believe it? I mean, diane’s a real overachiever in that sense. I mean — but I — I just think that if someone were to, um, try to get the world reacquainted with her past deeds, that might unnerve diane and she’ll go back to the person she was — I mean, the person that she’s always been, of course. I mean, she’ll just snap. And then certain people — it will prove to them that she has not changed at all.

Talia: I’m open to exploring diane’s life. I just don’t want to report on a story that’s already been out there.

Phyllis: Oh, no, wait. I totally understand that. I mean, I certainly believe that there’s something to uncover in her time in los angeles, for sure. So, I think that, um, if I were to give you some juicy details that weren’t in the

restless style story and you were to put those out in the world while you’re investigating her activity in los angeles, that could really be the story of the century — the downfall of diane jenkins.

Jack: Boy, the kids sure left right after we ate. Was it us?

Traci: Boy, I hope not. I mean, I certainly enjoy your company, that’s for sure.

Jack: And I definitely enjoy yours. But you know what? I remember what it was to be their age, young and in —

Traci: Lust. Mm-hmm.

Jack: It is my granddaughter we are talking about.

Traci: [ Laughs ] But, jack, you’re making it sound like you and I are all washed up here. I mean, I think it’s a little premature to put us out to pasture. I predict that one of these days, very soon, for us both, there will be nothing we’ll want more than to spend time alone with a special someone in our lives.

Jack: Please tell me we are not circling back to that subject.

Traci: What subject?

Jack: Diane.

Traci: [ Sighs ]

Jack: She is not a special someone in my life.

Traci: I understand that. And, believe me, I am not pushing the two of you together. I’m just making an observation that for somebody that you are not ready to forgive, you certainly want to spend a lot of time together.

Noah: I still can’t believe the club’s gonna become a reality.

Allie: It is. Oh, my gosh. Stop doubting yourself. Hey. I believe in you.

Noah: I got to share the credit with you.

Allie: No, you don’T. This was all your idea.

Noah: Babe, lily saw the enthusiasm in your eyes, okay? It was contagious. Gave me fresh inspiration during my pitch. It helped me envision what the place could actually be. That was all because of you.

Allie: Well, I am not gonna take any credit for it. But I did love getting to be a part of it. Noah, this is — this is so incredible.

Noah: You’re incredible. Hey. Are you sure?

Allie: Yeah. I’m sure.

Adam: Well, god knows you’re not the first person to tell me I need to break the cycle with victor.

Chelsea: Well, maybe it’s about time you start to listen?

Adam: [ Sighs ] At least jack gave me a job offer.

Chelsea: You’re kidding?

Adam: Mm-hmm. I thought he was kidding at first, but he was serious.

Chelsea: Oh, adam, congratulations. I think working at jabot would be an awesome fit for you.

Adam: I turned it down.

Chelsea: What? Why? Jack respects you and cares about you, and it’s about time you separated from the newmans, you know, started fresh.

Adam: Well, how often do you and I make the right moves for ourselves?

Chelsea: Mm, that’s a good point, very valid point. Listen, I was starting fresh. It felt good for a little while, then boom, bam — bye-bye, podcast.

[ Chuckles, groans ]

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Ah.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Adam: We certainly are a pair, aren’t we?

Chelsea: We are on a killer winning streak, yeah.

Adam: Mm-hmm. You know, they call people like us “coolers” at the blackjack table.

Chelsea: Oh. Because we’re so cool?

Adam: Super cool.

Chelsea: We have been through a lot together. The fact that we don’t hate each other after all of it belongs in a history book somewhere.

Adam: I am really glad that we’ve gotten to a place where we can support each other emotionally.

Recap written by Christine

Nick went to Victoria’s office, and she was glad to see him so they could strategize about Adam. Sally recently told Victoria that Adam tried to get a story published on Victor’s cover up of Ashland’s death. Nick said he and Victor just ran into Adam, and he was on the warpath. Victoria was worried Adam would take the story to another media outlet. Victoria didn’t have a full plan worked out yet, but she thought Sally was the key. She said they could have Sally tell Adam she was going to publish the article and make him believe she was on his side. Nick told Victoria that they were absolutely not going to use Sally as a pawn. Nick didn’t think it was fair to enlist Sally in a Newman family fight. He’d had a heart to heart with Sally earlier, and she’d been loyal to the family and the company, plus she was still dealing with her heartache from the breakup with Adam. Victoria realized Nick was right. Victoria said they had to protect Nick and Victor by making sure the truth about Ashland’s death never came out.

Nick didn’t need protecting – that was what got them here in the first place. He said all this talk about protecting him was making him start to understand Adam. Victoria wanted Nick to explain. Nick understood Adam’s frustrations with Victor’s constant interference. Victoria thought Adam took things too personally and it made him look weak, and that was why he’d never succeed at business. Nick wasn’t defending Adam, but he understood what motivated him. Nick said he didn’t want Victor’s help, but it was forced on him. He said Victoria had been in the same position. Victoria scoffed – she said she and Nick were nothing like Adam. She told him not to insinuate that this would unite them against Victor. That wasn’t what Nick meant. Nick planned to handle this very differently than Adam would. Nick didn’t agree with what Adam was doing, but he understood. Nick thought it was too bad Adam regressed, because he was starting to become cool with the new Adam. Victoria snapped that Adam tried to publish slander about their father. Nick said it wasn’t slander – it was true. Victoria said it was an accident, and the case was closed. Victor walked in and agreed that this was all over. Victor was happy Nick and Victoria were working together. Victor planned to take care of the threats from Adam. Victor wanted to celebrate putting this chapter behind them.

Chelsea and Adam went to Crimson Lights for coffee after the park. Sally apparently followed them there. Chelsea said Adam set her straight about her podcast career and managed to cheer her up a little. Adam said Chelsea made him reconsider how to handle his father and made him realize he should give more thought to Jack’s offer. Sally walked up and complimented Chelsea on the podcast, musing that Chelsea and Billy had great chemistry. Adam asked Sally what was going on. Chelsea also thought it was suspicious. Sally said she was just trying to be polite, which was apparently a foreign concept for Adam and Chelsea. She walked away. Adam apologized to Chelsea, who said Sally didn’t scare her. He smiled and recalled how tough Chelsea could be. He thanked her again for the talk at the park and left. Sally sat down at Chelsea’s booth.

Sally said Chelsea didn’t waste any time. Chelsea said Sally was acting jealous and possessive. Chelsea thought it was clear that Sally and Adam’s relationship was based on lust, given how quickly it crashed and burned. Sally said what she and Adam had was very special. Chelsea thought it was only special to Sally. “What Adam and I have has lasted for years,” Chelsea stated. She added that she and Adam had a child together, and whatever was going on between them, friendship or otherwise, was none of Sally’s business. Chelsea left. Sharon walked up and told Sally it was hard to let go.

Sally was humiliated after getting dressed down by Chelsea. She was trying so hard to let Adam go. Sharon called herself living proof that it could be done. Sally said Adam finally admitted he broke up with her so she could keep the job, but the confirmation didn’t make her feel any better. Sally said it hurt her more to know for sure that he was willing to purposely hurt her in a misguided attempt to protect her. Sharon said that was an unfortunate Newman trait. Sally said Adam hurt her so much there was no going back, and he’d also made it clear he didn’t trust her enough to take her on his new path. Sharon asked what new path. Sally said Adam was out to get his father. Sharon said Adam telling Sally he didn’t trust her could just be another way of protecting her from the nasty father/son battle. Sally said maybe Adam was looking out for her, but it didn’t matter, because she’d realized Victor would always be Adam’s primary relationship.

Sharon once thought Sally’s relationship with Adam could survive his father, but now Adam was alone again, looking to fight Victor. Sally said she was alone again too, and she’d never been a fan. She asked how Sharon handled the loneliness. Sally realized that was insensitive and apologized. Sally had asked because she knew Rey recently died. Sharon said it was fine. She stated that there was a difference between being alone and being lonely. Sharon wasn’t in a romance, but she was surrounded by people she loved most in the world. After surviving cancer, Sharon realized she didn’t want to waste time feeling sorry for herself, and she cherished time by herself. Sally loved that outlook and said she might get there one day. Sharon said life could change in an instant, and might make one feel worried, but the people she was surrounded by made her feel safe. Sally assumed Nick was one of those people. Sharon confirmed it. Sally said it must be nice ahving an ex who wasn’t an enemy. Sharon said it hadn’t all been rosy, but Nick was a good man and she was lucky to have him in her life.

Adam called Jack and left a message that he was reconsidering Jack’s offer. Adam was outside Society, and he saw Victor, Nick and Victor inside celebrating. Victoria said the company was on track to be stronger than ever, not because Ashland was gone but because Nick had joined them. They all toasted to the Newmans. Victor said the various division heads felt confident having the company in the hands of the Newman family. He loved their family running Newman. They all drank to that. He also toasted to Ashland being history, but Nick looked uncomfortable. Adam walked in, and Victor invited him to sit, but he declined. Adam said he’d pay their bill to show there were no hard feelings. Victoria asked why Adam decided to drag the family into another fight. He said he just bought them lunch and a very expensive bottle of champagne. Someone close to Adam helped him have an epiphany on his life, and he’d decided not to seek revenge. He was going to focus on his own life, and not fall into traps usually set by their father. Adam walked away.

Victoria didn’t buy Adam’s change of heart – why would he get the police report if he wasn’t going to use it. She asked what Nick thought. Victor interjected that he was going to deal with it. After the others had gone, Nick approached Adam and asked if his epiphany was for real. Adam said he had a vision for how he wanted his life to go, and it didn’t include wreaking havoc at Newman. Nick asked if they were supposed to just take Adam’s word for it. Adam said they could believe what they wanted to. Adam didn’t have an issue with or animosity toward Nick, who’d been nothing but honest and fair since Faith’s accident. All of Adam’s problems were with Victor. Nick said that he’d get hurt if Adam weaponized what he knew about Ashland. Adam said Nick was back in the fold now, but if he made a wrong move, Victor would turn on him too. “You think I don’t know what Dad’s capable of?,” Nick asked. Nick didn’t like how Victor handled things that night. Adam asked if Nick meant the night he killed Ashland. Nick said that it was an accident – Victoria was in danger. Adam could believe Nick didn’t have a choice, and he was also glad Nick was there to protect Victoria. Nick said that it showed how far Victor would go for all of them, Adam included.

Nick wished Adam could drop some of his resentment toward Victor. Adam wished he could too, but he wasn’t sure it’d happen. Nick thought it was low for Adam to even consider using Victor’s devotion to his children against him. Nick pointed out that Adam had needed the police to look past something he did many times. Adam swore he wanted to find a new path. Nick hoped so. Adam said as much as Victor’s instinct was to protect them by covering up AJ and Ashland’s death, it prevented Adam and Nick from processing the consequence of their actions. Adam said both were accidents and self defense, but he and Nick never had to publicly face what happened, because Victor covered it up. Adam said that meant he had to bury all these feelings about killing a man in the deepest part of his psyche. Nick said Adam was just a kid. Adam knew Victor thought he was helping, but he did the opposite – what Victor essentially said was Adam did something wrong and Victor fixed it, so forget about it and move on. Adam said he suppressed what he did in Kansas for a long time, and it turned him into the man he was today. “Is that what you want, Nick?,” Adam asked. He walked out.

At the office, Victoria admitted she was feeling a little buzzed from the champagne. Victor confessed he’d felt that way at the office too sometimes. She was grateful he risked so much for her and Nick that night. She’d never forget it. They hugged. Victor adored Victoria. He wished her brothers felt the same way as she did. She thought Nick did, deep down, but she wasn’t sure what was going on with Adam. Victor said he’d do whatever he could to protect their family, even if it meant protecting them from another Newman.

Chelsea went to the rooftop bar. She got a text from Billy with the link to the new podcast. She sighed and called Connor and said she missed him.

The park was decked out in decorations and presents for Dominic’s first birthday. Dom was on Mariah’s lap, and Tessa sat nearby. Mariah called Devon Daddy Warbucks and talked about the money this must’ve cost. Chance lightly noted that the invitation said no presents. Mariah said no one ever followed that instruction, especially not when Daddy Warbucks, Devon, was invited. Devon said he’d restrained himself, and everyone laughed. Abby walked up and said they were going to make a time capsule of memories of Dominic’s first year. She was going to have Dom open them on his first birthday. Mariah said she and Tessa were going to steal that for their future kids.

Chance wandered off into a private area and looked deep in thought. Abby asked everyone to read their memories, and Chance returned to the group. Mariah wrote about the positive pregnancy test, and Tessa discussed first seeing Dom on an ultrasound. Devon talked about the delivery. Mariah laughed and noticed Devon left out the part about the psycho who kidnapped her. Abby wrote that her favorite memory of Dominic’s first year was when Chance came home and met Dom for the first time.

Mariah and Tessa privately talked about some other things in their notes. Mariah wrote that she hoped Dominic found unconditional love. Tessa wrote that she hoped Dom found his passion. Mariah had addressed her note to Bowie. She wondered if that nickname would make sense in the future. Tessa thought so. Devon, Tessa and Mariah had to leave for work. Devon told Chance and Abby that they did a great job with the party.

Abby asked if Chance didn’t like her time capsule idea and the reminder that he missed part of Dominic’s first year. Chance said he’d done enough therapy to stop being upset about the lost time with Dominic. He really enjoyed the party. She asked why he was so quiet then. He was still worried about shutting down the investigation into Ashland’s death. She thought he had to stop second guessing himself. She said he made the right decision and her family was grateful. He was struggling to talk about this with her since she was so sure he didn’t do anything wrong. He said he couldn’t tell anyone else his father in law committed a crime and he was having trouble letting it go.

Abby said she never meant to influence Chance. She said the Newmans were her family, but they were his family too. She asked if he was having second thoughts. He told her not to worry about it. He got called into work for one of Rey’s cases. This was Rey’s final case, and once Chance closed it, he’d be done. Abby didn’t want Chance walking away in the middle of their important talk, but he said he had to do this for his partner. She asked if their family of three could get away for awhile, even if they took a weekend vacation. He said he’d think about it. Abby and Dom waved goodbye.

Later, after Dom fell asleep in his stroller, Abby dreamed of the day he’d grow up and open the notes from everyone. Devon returned – he forgot his tablet. He noticed something was bothering Abby. She said she’d hoped to have some time with Chance, just him her and Dom, but he got called away on a case. She felt like Chance was fixated on his cases lately. She knew she’d sound like a terrible person, but if someone was so consumed by work, didn’t that mean something was wrong? For her, family was first, and that was how it was in her mom’s family and her dad’s. Devon said Neil put his family first too, and Devon missed him every day. Devon thought Chance was crazy about Abby and Dom. Abby said Chance had put family first in some recent situations, but there were other times when he didn’t. Devon said Chance’s sense of right and wrong and his commitment to his job was a big part of who he was, and it might be as important to him as family. Devon said even though Chance’s priorities might shift from day to day, he still cared about both things. Abby was taught family was first and everything else came second. She said her dad always put family first, sometimes at the expense of everything else. Devon said Chance wasn’t like Victor, but he loved Abby and Dom, and they were his first priority. Abby hugged Devon.

Mariah and Tessa went to Crimson Lights after going to Marchetti. Tessa had done a few test shoots for modeling, and she’d had a lot of fun. Mariah said the best part of the day was Dominic’s birthday. It made Tessa and Mariah realize they wanted to dive back into the adoption process now. Sharon was excited for them. They had a group hug.

Nick was at Sally’s office, where Sally and Chloe pitched the idea to do talk shows aimed at an international audience. Nick liked what he heard, and he thought Sally and Chloe made a strong team. He asked about their process. Chloe said they both brought their own ideas to the table, but Sally was the fearless leader. Nick asked to speak to Sally alone, so Chloe left. Nick said Victoria told him about Adam trying to get Sally to publish an article on Ashland’s death. Sally said she knew the truth, and she understood why Nick was so sick over it. Nick said that Sally was burdened with that secret, thanks to Adam. Sally promised she’d never tell anyone about it. He said she’d proven she could be trusted. She was sorry things were so difficult. He said he was protecting his sister. She said that if everyone found out what happened, they’d probably give Nick the key to the city. He wasn’t so sure. She said brave people were usually modest. She said the Newmans could be intimidating, but they really went to the mat for each other. The more time she spent with the Newmans, the less she understood Adam’s attitude toward his family. Nick was genuinely appreciative Sally turned Adam down and gave Victoria a head’s up. Sally said that the Newmans should be on guard about Adam, because he was in pursuit of one thing – revenge.

Nick appreciated the warning, but this wasn’t the first time Adam tried to get revenge on their family. Nick had hoped Adam would turn the corner after he gave Faith a kidney, but he was wrong. Sally thought that was sad. Nick said it was reality. Nick assumed Sally had only seen Adam at his best, but he and his family had dealt with Adam at his best and worst. He hated to say this, because he knew she cared about Adam, but he thought Sally was better off not being in a relationship with Adam. As many times as Sally told herself things were over with Adam and that it was for the best, but part of her still had feelings for him. She said she could relate to the bad parts of Adam, because she’d lived in his shoes – she’d felt burned by people and determined to make them regret it. Nick was aware of some of Sally’s stunts, and he’d like to think she’d left that behind. Sally liked to believe that too, but she did sometimes feel the urge to deliver a dose of payback to those who wronged her. He thought they’d all been there, some more than others. She said that she hadn’t acted on those impulses for a long time, and the tide may have turned because people, like Nick, had faith in her and gave her a chance. He wanted to believe Adam could change, so he could have a brother that he could bond with, but unfortunately, Adam had proved his turnarounds didn’t last very long.

Sally was worried about Adam, and that was why she couldn’t keep quiet about him. Nick said he and Victoria were grateful. Sally thought it was best for everyone, including Adam, that people knew what he was doing. Sally never wanted to go down the road of seeking revenge again. Nick thought Sally had come a long way.

At the park, Chelsea and Adam had a chipper discussion about the text he got earlier. He said it was good news. They both quickly admitted they were too tired to keep up the cheery act and just tell each other what was going on. She said she recorded her final podcast episode with Billy. Adam thought Chelsea should to get a co-host who wasn’t a jerk. She said Billy wasn’t a jerk, and he’d suggested she do the same thing. Chelsea had decided against that, and she didn’t understand why she couldn’t find a job that she could handle and something that wouldn’t get yanked away from her. Adam knew the feeling – he’d had the perfect job at Newman dangled in front of him, then yanked away. Chelsea had seen Adam in this state before, and she said it was pure rage.

Adam said Chelsea knew rage was his baseline emotion. Right now he was at a 2, and it could get worse. That was what Chelsea was afraid of. She saw him walking around all calm, but she knew something was burning under the surface. She knew the side of him that wanted vengeance was back. She thought he gave her good advice earlier, so she asked if there was any way she could talk him off the ledge. He thanked her, but he said she couldn’t help – this was between him and his dad. He said he let Victor use him yet again and toss him aside. Chelsea said that tossing Adam aside for Victoria was wrong, but classic Victor. Adam told Chelsea the truth about Ashland’s death. Chelsea realized that was why Victoria was so tense when they saw each other the other day. Adam grumbled that Victor covered it up. Chelsea saw the parallels between Ashland’s death and AJ Montalvo’s. Adam griped about it, and Chelsea said she thought Adam made peace with that. Adam wasn’t sure how to make peace with finding out he’d killed someone as a child, and no one told him. Adam tried to stuff it down but it never went away. His voice broke and he said hiding this information from him did him more harm than good. Chelsea thought Victor was trying to protect Adam, the same way Adam would go to extremes to protect Connor, and maybe he’d even protect Chelsea the same way, even though they weren’t together anymore.

Adam said he’d break any law for Connor and move a dozen bodies for him. He’d probably move a couple of bodies for Connor’s mother, too. Chelsea hoped it didn’t come to that. Adam said even when Victor did something decent it came with a price. Chelsea said, as someone who went to the mental hospital instead of jail because of Victor, she was well aware of how he operated. Adam said Victor would never apologize, and it was time someone forced his hand, here and now. Adam had the power and evidence to do it.

Chelsea had been there. She said Adam wanted justice and he’d go to dark places to get it. Adam denied that this was dark – he said he was trying to bring the truth to light. Chelsea said if Adam tried to hurt Victor, Victor would go after him. She thought Victor was like Adam in that regard. She said that Connor loved Adam and Victor, and he’d be hurt in the fallout. She told him to beat Victor by being a better dad and to stop holding grudges. “Beat Victor by letting go,” she advised. Adam said Chelsea wasn’t the first person to tell him to break the cycle with Victor. He said Jack offered him a job. She thought that would be a good fit, and she was disappointed when he told her he turned it down. He noted that they both had a history of making the wrong choices in life. She admitted that was true. She said she’d felt like she was starting fresh, and it felt good, then the podcast ended. He said they called people like them coolers at the blackjack table. She marveled that they didn’t hate each other after all they’d been through together. He rubbed her back and said he was glad they’d gotten to a place where they could support each other emotionally. She initiated a hug, and Sally walked up and saw Adam and Chelsea holding each other.

Traci noticed Jack humming to himself when he walked into the living room. She wondered what made him so happy. She wanted to scrutinize his mood, like he was a character in one of her novels. He said he wasn’t in her novel, he was her brother. He was thrilled Kyle, Summer and Harrison were back, that exciting things were happening at Jabot, and his family was at peace. They marveled that the family was at peace while Diane as in town. He was also grateful Kyle was healing.

Traci asked if Jack was in the process of forgiving Diane. He wasn’t sure that was the right word. She asked what forgiveness would look like for him and Diane. Before he could respond, Allie and Noah came in holding hands.

Allie had great news – Noah found the perfect location for his club. Noah said the Glam Club would be opening at The Grand Phoenix as soon as Chancellor Winters’s purchase was finalized. Allie said Noah pitched the idea to Lily, and she loved it. Jack decided this called for a celebration – lunch at Society.

Diane’s face fell when she walked into Society and saw Nikki. Diane went over and said hello, and she seemed caught off guard when Nikki was polite to her. Nikki said that Summer told her Diane was doing a wonderful job at Marchetti. Diane wondered where Nikki’s seemingly laissez faire attitude was coming from. Nikki said she’d decided it was easier to ignore Diane than to engage, though it was harder when Diane approached her. Diane was sure that if she’d ignored Nikki, Nikki would’ve come to her. Nikki said Diane wasn’t worth her energy – she had a full life to live. Diane made a snide comment about all the upheaval at Newman. Nikki said the company was thriving, so Diane only needed to be concerned about Marchetti. Diane said it was doing well, thanks partially to her son’s leadership. Nikki was sure her granddaughter had something to do with that too. Diane agreed that Summer was a wonderful leader. Diane appreciated that Summer kept an open mind and didn’t just accept everything Phyllis and Nikki said about Diane. Nikki was confident Diane would sabotage herself and leave town in disgrace without any help from anyone. In the beginning, Nikki felt compelled to push the process along, but now she realized it wasn’t worth her time, because she knew Diane was capable of blowing up her life on her own. Diane invited herself to sit with Nikki. She said that Phyllis also talked about letting go, but she’d taken a job at the same place Diane worked. It was clear to Diane that something was going on.

Diane asked what Nikki and Phyllis had up their sleeves. “Diane, you deluded narcissist, not everything is about you, dear,” Nikki said in a cloying tone. Nikki asked if it ever crossed Diane’s mind that Phyllis wanted to work with Summer, just as Nikki loved working with Victoria and Nick, and Diane presumably loved working with Kyle. Diane knew Phyllis loved the hotel. Nikki said Phyllis had never been successful at holding onto anything, like careers, or men. Diane thought Nikki was insulting Phyllis to try and prove they weren’t working together. Nikki suggested all that time in hiding made Diane paranoid. Diane said Nikki was trying to put her on the defensive. Nikki said she was just concerned for Diane. Diane scoffed that Nikki being polite and considerate was the biggest red flag of all. Nikki said being civil was less exhausting, because everyone had grown bored with Diane’s drama. Diane called Nikki and Phyllis were the drama queens of Genoa City. Nikki said Diane had to accept the fact that the novelty of her return had worn off, and no one was thinking of her at all.

Jack and Traci went to Society. they saw Diane and Nikki and knew that couldn’t be good. They went over to say hello, and he asked what was going on. Nikki said she was finishing her lunch at her table for one. Jack asked Diane if everything was alright. Nikki was annoyed, and Diane smiled broadly. Noah and Allie came up outside the restaurant and were concerned to see Diane and Nikki. Allie said Jack was trapped in the middle. Noah thought his grandma would win. Allie said Diane was sneaky though, and she wouldn’t count Traci out either. Allie asked Noah to promise that no matter how hostile things got, it wouldn’t spoil their amazing day. He agreed, and they kissed.

Nikki said she was minding her own business when Diane appeared, and Nikki had been very civil. Diane agreed, adding that Nikki had been bizarrely even-keeled. Nikki was heading out when Allie and Noah came in. Noah introduced Allie to his grandmother. They greeted each other warmly, and Nikki said she hoped they could spend some time together soon. Allie agreed, and Nikki left. Jack admitted he’d jumped to the conclusion that Nikki was harassing Diane. Diane said it wasn’t a bad guess.

Diane learned about the celebration and asked what the occasion was. Allie said they were celebrating her boyfriend’s new club. Jack asked Diane to join them. Diane declined because she had to get back to work. She congratulated Noah and left. Traci gave Jack a knowing look. Later, Jack noted that the kids left as soon as they ate. He knew what it was like to be that age, though – young and in – “Lust,” Traci interjected. Jack said that was his granddaughter they were talking about. Traci laughed. She also felt Jack was prematurely putting himself and her out to pasture. She thought that they would both find someone special. He hoped they weren’t circling back to Diane. He said Diane wasn’t a special person in his life. Traci wasn’t pushing Diane and Jack together, but she thought it was interesting that Jack wanted to spend a lot of time with her when he hadn’t forgiven her.

Allie and Noah went to the Abbott house. He wanted to give her credit for helping with the pitch that landed him the spot for the club, but she said it was all him. She did love getting to be there for the meeting with Lily. They kissed passionately, and she started to pull him toward the staircase. He asked if she was sure about this. She was. They rushed up to her bedroom.

Phyllis visited Talia at her hotel room, in The Grand Phoenix. Talia didn’t realize until recently that Phyllis owned it. Phyllis said she just sold because she worked at Marchetti now. Talia didn’t think it was a coincidence that Phyllis went to work where Diane worked. Phyllis revealed that she and Nikki had a plan. Phyllis said that you had to be crafty with Diane, so Talia should stick with the cover story about doing a piece on Ashland Locke. Talia asked what was going down with Diane. Phyllis said Diane was going to get in trouble at work, not because of anything Phyllis did, but because Diane was in way over her head.

Talia asked why Phyllis was rooting for Diane to fail. Phyllis was sure Talia did her research and also read the article in Restless Style. Phyllis said that was the tip of the iceberg. That surprised Talia, because the stories in the article were out there – home-wrecking, arson, sperm stealing. Talia wanted to hear everything. Phyllis asked where Talia wanted to start – multiple blackmails, child abandonment, faking her death…

Talia couldn’t believe one person could do so much in one lifetime. Phyllis thought that if someone were to remind the world of Diane’s past deeds, she might go back to the person she was. Phyllis said it would prove to certain people that Diane hadn’t changed. Talia was open to exploring Diane’s life, but she didn’t want to report on a story that had already been done. Phyllis thought that there were things in LA that hadn’t been uncovered. Phyllis offered to give Talia some juicy details that weren’t in the Restless Style story for Talia to publish while investigating Diane’s activity in LA. Phyllis smiled as she imagined it’d be the story of the century.

Victor: I tend to agree, but what do you think about all the eagerness with which she is suddenly making all these acquisitions?

Nick: I think she’s a little overzealous in her desire to remove any stain Ashland left on her or Newman. But I totally get it. I mean, he absolutely humiliated her — and not just once. Now, she was able to get some payback by getting you back your money from Ashland. But she did love him, dad.

Victor: Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay. Her taste in men, I tell you, has always been her Achilles’ heel.

Nick: Vick’s got a lot to prove to herself right now. When she came back from New York and she said she wanted things to be different, I know she meant it.

**********************************************

Adam: It was an accident. Ashland was threatening Victoria, and to protect her, Nick punched him.

Sally: Yeah, I knew that he hit him, but I thought that’s as far as it went.

Adam: Well, apparently he inherited dear old dad’s boxing skills because one punch is all it took. He hit Ashland, he hit his head on the fireplace in just the right spot, and the miserable bastard died.

Sally: Oh, my god.

Adam: Yeah. Well, good riddance, as far as I’m concerned.

Sally: But this — this sounds like a clear-cut case of self-defense. So, why would Victor cover it up?

Adam: Because the chess master cannot resist playing the game. As far as I know, my siblings had nothing to do with this. It was all dear old dad, and the story should reflect that.

Sally: This is insane.

Lucas: Hey, wait a minute. Are you calling me a thief?

Adam: [Clears throat] Yeah, Kevin. Who are you to come in here, hurling accusations at my guest?

Kevin: Oh, save it. I know what you’re up to. Do you think I have short-term memory loss, that I would suddenly forget that you were just on the hunt for dirt to use against Victor? I shoot you down. Next thing I know, someone breaks into my car and swipes my computer!

Adam: Uh, that sounds like a very unfortunate coincidence to me. Sure I don’t have to tell somebody that works for the GCPD that people have valuables stolen all the time out of their car.

********************

Sally: I get what you’re saying about you and Adam having a history. But that’s the key word, isn’t it — “history”? Because after all you’ve been through, there really is no going back, is there?

Chelsea: Well, you should take those words to heart, because you’re also history where Adam’s concerned.

Sally: What’s your point?

Chelsea: Well, you know, even though you two weren’t involved very deeply or for very long, it’s always really painful when an affair ends. I just really admire the way you guys have handled the breakup. You got right back on your feet quickly. I think it’s very healthy and very mature, the way you both moved on.

A:dam You understand what I’m saying, don’t you?

Kevin: It’s not that difficult to comprehend.

Adam: [Sighs] You seem awfully calm. I mean, if someone had told me i was gonna be blamed for a negligent investigation and a sloppy cover-up, I would be really upset.

Kevin: I’m not flipping out because you’ve got it all wrong. That’s not what’s happening.

Adam: Okay. Whatever you say. You must know more than me. I just — I was just trying to help give you some clarity, Kevin.

Kevin: I don’t need clarity.

Adam: Oh, no, of course not. Your ability to properly judge a situation is legendary. That’s your superpower, right? That and distinguishing between right and wrong.

Kevin: The idea of you dispensing moral guidance is ludicrous.

Adam: Who’s gonna look out for you, Kevin? Michael isn’t D.A. anymore. It’s not like the old days when he can get you out of jams.

Chance: And Abby told me how tough it was for everyone.

Victor: Mm.

Chance: And now you have more grandkids. They love you, Victor. They look up to you. I look up to you. So, if you’re not gonna be concerned about yourself, i would advise you to think about them.

Victor: I think about them all the time, Chance.

Chance: All I’m saying, Victor, is that I will not cover for you ever again.

Victor: Alright, Chance. You have a nice day. I have things to do. If you don’t mind, show yourself out.

Victor: It’s good to see you back in your element, right where you belong.

Victoria: Well, I have to say, I have not missed a beat since stepping back into control here.

Victor: Uh-huh.

Victoria: And you don’t have to worry about me anymore. I am back on my game. Ashland is in the rearview mirror, and I am focused on moving the company forward. I don’t suppose you saw the video call with the division heads earlier?

Victor: Yes, I saw it. Very impressive. And I fully support you wanting to acquire more companies. But, sweetheart, uh, be careful doing that, okay?

Adam: Thanks for meeting me.

Chance: Adam, I came here to make one thing very clear. The ashland locke investigation is closed. His death was ruled an accident. So there is no need for you to fish around for any fresh dirt. You understand? I’m done playing games with you. Move on.

Adam: Look, I’m sorry. I don’t know if I can now, not after seeing some pretty incriminating evidence against victor, evidence that you obviously chose to ignore. No, I think now would be a pretty good time for you to consider righting this wrong because it would be a pretty terrible thing for you if proof came out that you covered up a crime as a personal favor to your father-in-law.

Adam: This doesn’t have to get adversarial, chance. I’m just curious — why wasn’t certain dna and fingerprint evidence followed up on?

Chance: How’d you come by that information?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Maybe I found a laptop on a bench in a park that a police lackey left behind. Okay, but let’s get real. The how and where of it is not relevant. It’s that the evidence exists and what it could prove that matters. Now, I know that you’re not somebody who could be bought off, but something clearly happened. What happened? Did victor intimidate you to falling in line with the newmans?

Chance: No one intimidated me, and I am not about to be intimidated by you, adam. I did my job. I made a judgment call, and i have no remorse about my decision.

Adam: I find that hard to believe, knowing you as well as I do. Quite frankly, chance, it seems like you’ve lost your way.

Chance: You are the one that’s lost your way, pal. And you are headed down a dangerous path.

Devon: [ Sighs ]

Nate: Go ahead.

Devon: No. After you, please.

Nate: No, you go ahead.

Lily: Uh, why don’t you both come in? Hello.

Devon: Hey.

Lily: Hello.

Nate: Hello.

Lily: So, I just wanted to get together and chat and make sure that we’re all on the same page. Right? ‘Cause we’re on the same team.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Lily: Yes? Okay. Um, nate, why don’t you start?

Nate: Yes. Um, there is something important I’d like to discuss, but maybe we should wait for billy.

Billy: Whoa. I, uh… I don’t — I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, but that — that was a mistake. I’ve been telling everyone…

Adam: You think I’m heading down a dangerous path? I wasn’t anywhere near ashland or his body the night that he died, chance.

Chance: You know exactly what I’m talking about, man. And it’s disappointing to see, adam. You are just falling right back into your old self-destructive ways in the name of vengeance.

Adam: Oh, that’s funny. You are the one that is ignoring crucial evidence.

Chance: Yeah, but you’re the one that’s blowing up your own life. Look at you — alienating your family, pushing sally away, the one person who had a good influence on you. And now you’re claiming that you got your hands on a police-issued laptop, and you’re threatening a cop who used to be your friend. You don’t see anything wrong with what you’re doing here? You hate your father that much?

Adam: No, my father deserves to be punished for manipulating his family — and more importantly, the truth. As I recall, you used to believe in the truth, chance.

Victoria: I have carefully thought through each and every acquisition that I want to make, and every single one of them is good business.

Victor: I applaud it. But I want you to consult with me as you continue.

Victoria: Of course I’m gonna consult with you.

Victor: Okay.

Victoria: You’re my greatest counsel.

Nick: Am I interrupting anything?

Victor: Hey, son.

Victoria: No, not at all.

Nick: There’s some numbers i want to go over with you.

Victoria: Oh, okay. Well, I’ve got to check in with marketing, but I’ll be back in a few minutes. In the meantime, dad is here with much wisdom to impart and counsel to give.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Victor: What do you think about your sister’s demeanor?

Lily: Billy won’t be joining us. He’s wrapping up his final podcast episode. So he’ll be refocusing on his coo job.

Devon: Oh, really? I thought he and chelsea were really finding their groove with that show.

Lily: I mean, it was his idea, to be honest, and I’m glad. I am.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: And he found a new host, someone who has his similar sensibility, so the show will carry on.

Devon: Oh, nice. That’s good to hear.

Lily: Yeah. Uh, so, what did you want to bring up?

Nate: Yes. Um, I’ve been doing some research about what it would take to start our own music festival. The numbers are promising, not to mention the fringe benefits, like elevating our name recognition on a much larger scale. The way I see it, it’s a win, hands down.

Chelsea: I am so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.

Billy: It’s okay. It’s alright. You know, we’ve been working closely together lately, and, uh, the moment was misinterpreted. It happens to the best of us.

Chelsea: Can we just pretend that never happened? We need to focus because this is our final podcast, so let’s just move on.

Billy: You don’t think we should talk about this for a minute? I mean —

Chelsea: I absolutely do not.

[ Sighs ]

[ Button clicks ] Welcome to a sad day in the world of podcasts.

Adam: Hey.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Well, I have to give it to you. It takes real nerve showing your face in this building. Do I need to call security?

Adam: Oh, that won’t be necessary. I’m here to apologize.

Sally: I’m not really sure what to make of that, but I’m open to hearing whatever it is that you have to say. The floor is yours.

[ Pen clicks ]

Adam: Look, I’m sorry that things got so unpleasant with us. I shouldn’t have been indirect with you.

Sally: Try manipulative.

Adam: I’m sorry.

Sally: The problem was that you weren’t very good at it and I wasn’t falling for it.

Adam: Well, I guess when it comes to you, I met my match.

Sally: And then some.

Adam: Look, I take responsibility for everything that went down with us, and I’m just hoping that there might be a way to make things a little less hostile between us moving forward.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I don’t think I was ever hostile.

Adam: No. You’re right. You weren’T. I… even when I was being really rough on you. And maybe that’s because we understand each other deep down, regardless of what words were being said.

Sally: You’re right.

Adam: And despite everything that’s happened, I still feel like you are the only one that, um…I can open up to.

Sally: Well, I appreciate that. If there is something that you need to get off your chest, you can talk to me. If you have age-related macular degeneration,

Devon: Okay, so, this is not what you’re gonna to want to hear, nate, but doing a music festival is not the move for our company right now.

Nate: How can you make a judgment call like that already? You haven’t even seen the research yet.

Devon: It doesn’t take research to know that starting a music festival from scratch is a huge risk that will take up a lot of our cash.

Lily: Well, listen, I know that it would take a significant amount of capital, but I think the idea’s interesting.

Devon: Yeah, I think the idea is interesting, too. That’s what I said to you when you pitched it to me. I’m just saying that right now isn’t the best time. This is our first year as a company. We’re brand-new, and we’re bound to have some hiccups, some bumps in the road. And I think that it’s a smart thing for us to keep a hold of our cash to be prepared for that sort of thing and not just take a big swing at something that could be a miss.

Nate: I think that approach is unnecessarily defensive and too conservative. But I guess it’s your call. I’ve got to get to another meeting.

Chelsea: Today actually marks our last episode of the podcast because our founder, billy abbott, has decided to focus on his day job. And I guess that could kind of be the theme of this whole episode, right? Goodbyes.

Billy: Mm.

Chelsea: How to navigate them, what you can learn from them.

Billy: Yeah. And you know what? Goodbyes don’t always have to be heart-wrenching and tragic. You know, they can be civil, amicable, maybe even a little uplifting.

Chelsea: Yeah. Actually, this isn’t the first time billy and I have said goodbye. I mean, we’ve parted ways before.

Billy: That is true, but we don’t have to get into that right now.

Chelsea: Except, you know, the audience might be intrigued by the fact that, you know, we were an item once, you know, once upon a time.

Billy: Well, that — yeah, that — that was a long time ago, chels.

Chelsea: True. It’s ancient history. Not sure why I brought it up.

Billy: I don’t know. Maybe — maybe because with goodbyes there is a sense of loss. But there’s also room for new beginnings.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Billy: And I guess that is time to wrap it up.

Chelsea: Well, I’ll let you say the final goodbye.

Billy: Okay. Um, look, I just want to say that this has been an amazing experience. I’ve learned a lot. And I really want to thank each and every person that has listened. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you. So, thank you for your time. I’m gonna miss it. And with that, I will say goodbye for now.

[ Button clicks ]

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: That was good, right?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah. It was great.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Vick seems good to me, dad. Strong and focused. I don’t think it’s an act.

Victor: Yeah, I just wish we had been able to get ashland locke out of town before his demise. But things are the way they are, aren’t they? And if your sister wants to prove herself, let her prove herself in spades.

Adam: I was fortunate enough to stumble across a certain police report.

Sally: How do you stumble across a police report?

Adam: Well, that part isn’t important. What is in it is what matters. The report details the investigation into ashland’s death. And it includes a lot of evidence against victor that chance willfully ignored. And it’s evidence that needs to come out.

Sally: Damn it. Adam, for a minute there, i thought you were actually being sincere and straightforward with me. You don’t need a sympathetic ear. You need help taking down victor. No, you used our history and what we once had to work me over again.

Adam: Okay, look, I will admit that I needed you to listen long enough to tell you what is going on. But that doesn’t change the facts with a huge possibility here. This is a gold mine of a story. It’s the kind of story that could make a young media mogul’s career. And I’m willing to give you all the evidence you need to run it. All you have to do is publish the truth and reveal to the world my dad’s cover-up.

Devon: Hey, you know that my opposition to the music festival idea has nothing to do with any personal issues between me and nate — ’cause I said the same thing to you about my concerns that it would be stretching our company too thin.

Lily: Yes. Yes, you did. But you also said that we should explore it more, which is exactly what nate did. And he’s right. You haven’t looked at the data. So, can you give it a little bit more consideration?

Devon: Absolutely, I can. I don’t have a problem doing that. And this is not some kind of attack on nate, either. This is just business. Our company is doing well and it’s stable right now and I’d like to keep it that way, not risk at all by exceeding our grasp.

Billy: Are we okay?

Chelsea: We’re good. I promise.

Billy: Okay, ’cause I don’t want this to be awkward at all.

Chelsea: It’s not. It won’t be. But I meant what I said before. Can we just never bring this up again, please?

Billy: Well, yeah, of course we can, but we have been so great at being open and honest with each other, both on and off the air. I’m just not sure that’s the best way to handle this.

Chelsea: It is. For me.

Billy: Okay.

Chelsea: And truly, billy, i wish you the best of luck back at your coo position. I do.

Billy: Thank you, chels. And, listen, I will, uh, pack this up and send it wherever you need it, you know, wherever you want to set up shop so you can continue the podcast.

Chelsea: I’ve been thinking about it. Um, I think doing the podcast by myself — it’s just not gonna work.

Billy: Come on. You’re really good at this. And if this is about flying solo, we have a whole list of people that you can work with at chancellor-winters.

Chelsea: You’ve really looked out for me, and I appreciate you having me back and having such faith in me, but, um, it just wouldn’t be the same.

Billy: Okay. Do you mind me asking what you’re gonna do next?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] It’s just something I’m gonna have to figure out on my own.

Nick: Hey. Glad I ran into you. Feels like a brand new day, huh?

Chance: I wish it did, nick. Thought we were all gonna be able to move on from all this, but something’s happened.

Nick: I thought the case was closed and we were out of the woods.

Chance: Yeah, well, someone got their hands on all the evidence that I uncovered about the events the night ashland died. All of the evidence.

Nick: [ Sighs ] How? They read the police report you filed? Who we talking about? Adam.

Sally: You’re right. If victor orchestrated a cover-up, it would be one hell of a story.

Adam: No, no, no, there’s no “if” about it. I’m not asking you to take my word for it. I can show you a police report that proves all of it.

Sally: If I publish this story, it is the end of my career at newman media.

Adam: Do you really want to work for a company owned by a man who staged a car crash to cover up the fact that his favorite son killed his daughter’s ex-husband?

Sally: What?

Adam: I told you it was juicy.

Sally: You actually expect me to believe that nick murdered ashland?

Adam: It’s also potentially award-winning, sally. Okay, look, even if my family cans you, there’s gonna be a bunch of other media companies that will be dying to hire you.

Sally: I am skeptical that anyone would want to hire someone who goes after their own boss.

Adam: I think you’d be surprised. I think people would really respect the fact that you did the right thing.

Sally: I’m not sure it is the right thing.

Adam: What my father did was blatantly wrong. He used his power and his influence to interfere in the justice system. He should face repercussions for that.

Sally: Okay, but what about chance? Because if I publish this story, it also exposes his complicity.

Adam: He was complicit. I confronted him with what i knew. I gave him the opportunity to fix it on his own accord. He flatly refused.

Sally: So now chance has just become someone else you’re willing to throw under the bus in your battle against victor? Like you did with me?

Adam: I didn’t toss you aside, sally, okay? I protected you, not only when it comes to your job, but to the all-out war I am about to start.

[ Sighs ]

Sally: So you finally admitted the truth. Okay everyone,

“The young and the restless”

will continue. What’s the #1 retinol brand

Nate: Devon just cannot help himself. No matter what I’m advocating for, if I say “a,” he says “B.” And it’s especially frustrating because I cannot tell what the hell is going on with him, why he’s being so antagonistic and can’t give me the slightest opportunity.

Elena: And I get it. You want to make your mark with the company. But I guess I’m still trying to understand why you’re so angry about all of this.

Nate: [ Sighs ]Rmer president trump residence known as mar-a-lago has just been unsealed. The judge who approved that warrant ruled yesterday that the affidavit could be relieved after officials removed or redacted is certain sensitive information. The justice department argued that releasing any portion of this document could compromise its investigation. The judge sided with requests from multiple news organizations, including cbs news, to partially unseal this document. You saw it unscrolling on the screen. I want to bring in correspondent robert costa, who is palm beach, florida, where this issue was decided. Bob, what do we know so far?

Good to be with you, major. Cbs news is still digested this affidavit. Many black lines throughout the document, heavily redacted. This is a serious document. As I’ve been reading it and working with our team here, it is evident that the government believes, and this is why they believe they had probable cause to go into mar-a-lago, on the palm beach side, to go into mar-a-lago because there are 15 boxes full of highly classified information, sensitive, compartmented information, dealing with national security and national defense documents. Because they believe they had probable cause they were in this storage facility at mar-a-lago and not properly stored, they’re telling the judge here in west palm beach, bruce reinhart, that they felt compelled to go into former president trump’s handling of documents. They note in this second page of the affidavit, they believe there is probable cause of the crime of obstruction being committed, and they have evidence of that. This is a serious case, the affidavit underscores it. We’re still trying to find out more about the specifics, which have been heavily redacted.

Bob costa with us. The document runs 38 pages, jeff pegues is at the tablE. A few moments ago at the white house, president biden was participating in a women’s equality convenient. The question was: Has national security been threat dendthreatened by documents at mar-a-lago, and the president said, “we will let the justice department determine that.” Jeff pegues, what strikes you about what you’ve seen so far?

In some ways this is a disappointing document. If you’re looking for some sort of smoking gun in terms of what the government may have and why they searched mar-a-lago when they did, you might be disappointed. However, what the government has done here has — they have released, and as you can see here, look at all of these redactions, and this is just a taste of what this document looks like, but if you literally read between the lines, what you will see is how this investigation has conducted, almost from start, which basically the D.O.J.’S role in this started in february, to this point now, including the search of mar-a-lago, and the search for the 15 boxes. What the government is saying, and what stands out to me here, is that they are saying there is evidence of obstruction. And I think that’s the line that stands out to me most. In that, there are supporters of the former president who have made comments, inaccurate comments, about these documents —

Representations to the justice department.

Representations that the department of justice wants to get bacK. These are government documents. Various classifications, that’s what they’re saying here. They don’t belong to the former president. They say these are government documents, produced by the government for the government.

Kathryn, before i come to you, I want to ask jeff this one question: This 38 pages, extremely unusual for this to be seen at this stage in any investigation involving anyznrz american,c&n

Yeah. This doesn’t happen in every case.

Affidavits usually do not appear until there is an indictment, and we’re very long way away from that.

They stay sealed. The fact itfc-t is out there, even though it has been heavily redacted, I’m sure there was a lot of hand wringing on the part of D.O.J. Officials because there are still these echoes of 2016, and james comey sort of making declarations about an investigation that ultimately, a lot of people believe, played a role in the 2016 election. And nobody wants to go back to thaT. And this attorney general has been very — he has been honest about the fact that we treat everybody the same. There is nobody above the law. But that also means, in his view, that we go by the book. And releasing something like this is not going by the book. But there is this pressure on the department of justice to put something out there to the public.

Jeff, thanks. Kathryn, stand by. Bob costa, I want to go back to you in west palm beach, florida.

Major, what is important to recognize from the documents the government has filed, beyond the affidavit, this is an ongoing federal investigation of the highest level, and they are dealing with witnesses that they are really concerned about in terms of intimidation, and they mention it in this document, civilian witnesses. And there has been a lot of reporting at cbs news and elsewhere about how the mar-a-lago properties, employees, people who had access to president trump’s inner circle, visitors to that property, play have left in vulnerable to foreign actors, to anyone with ill-intentions. What the federal government is saying, this is an ongoing investigation with many witnesses across complicated fronts around the former president. And that’s why they’re so hesitant to give more information about the details of what they’re learning from specific people, who might be vulnerable to some kind of attack or criticism and the intimidation factor.

Bob costa at west palm beach. Kathryn, many of us at cbs news have experience of going through documents like this. What has emerged to you as you read through it here sitting at the table.

The key section to me is the probable cause section. Unsurprisingly, this is the most heavily redacted. But there are some pieces of the puzzle i want to try to put together. It tells us earlier this year, the national archives received these boxes that had class fide records, or records marked “class fidE.” Andclassified.”There is probable cause to believe that documents containing classified national defense information and presidential records remain at the premises. It goes on to say there was no a secure facility at mar-a-lago that would be authorized to contained highly classified information. And it goes on to say “i submit that probable cause exists to believe that evidence or other contraband illegally possessed will still be found at these premises.” In other words, they believe there was highly sensitive, national defense information, in classified information, at the highest levels that remained at mar-a-lago, and it did not have the kind of secure government facility, what they know as a skiff, to protect these records. What I also find instructive are the five pillars that the F.B.I. And the justice department lay out for withholding so much of this information for the publiC. It talks about witness information, and that quickly and broadly witnesses could be identified through social media, and this would have a chilling affect on cooperation. It talks about the roadmap to the investigation. It talks about the rules of criminal procedure, so protecting grand jury information. It specifically talks about safety of law enforcement personnel and the privacy of others. So those are the five pillars. But what we can see in the pieces of this puzzle, is they believe there was evidence that still highly classified national defense information remained at mar-a-lago in a facility that was not secure.

Kathryn, the former president has represented in public in various ways that he was cooperative with this. And that this search warrant was not necessary. As a last resort. That this could have been resolved some other way. Is there anything you have been able to see — and i know we’re going through it bit by bit — that comes close that underlying question, cooperation or whether or not this could have been handled another way?

There is a specific section where it talks about the findings of the national archive, this more than half dozen boxes containing classified information, and it goes on to say there was a public statement from the “save america” pact, that nothing was founD. So this was, in the view of this affidavit, sort of an element of obstruction. So saying publicly the national archives didn’t see anything here, but, in fact, we now know —

Essentially misrepresentation.

That’s a very good point because if you look at page 17, the 15 boxes provided, the archives contain classified information. They have a breakdown of what was in there. 184 unique documents bearing classification markings, including 67 documents marked as confidential.

92 documents marked as secret. 95 documents marked at top secret. The F.B.I. Agents observed documents reflecting the following departments, con sem nationconsemnation, arcon. It shows these aren’t personal momentoS. According to the F.B.I., These are top-secret, confidential documents that belong to the government.

I’ve got to jump in. Jeff pegues, thank you. Kathryn, thank you. And our thanks to bob costa in west palm beach. Our coverage will continue on our cbs news streaming and tonight on the “cbs evening news.” This habsthis has been a cbs special report. I’m major garrett in washington. Good day.

[ Knock on door ]

Sally: Am I interrupting?

Victoria: No, not at all. Please come in. Have a seat. You know, I thought the video conference went rather well. Are you on board for everything that we’ve laid out?

Sally: Yeah. I’ve already started working on the things that we talked about. Unfortunately, I’m here about another matter.

Victoria: Well, what would you like to discuss?

Sally: It has to do with adam.

Victoria: Oh, yes, of course it does. Have you and my brother gotten back together?

Sally: No. No, no, no. It’s nothing like that. Believe me. That is not happening. But adam did come to me today with a proposition. He claims to have evidence regarding ashland’s death that would — how do I say this? — Not show the newmans in a favorable light.

[ Door closes ]

Victoria: So, what did he want from you?

Sally: He asked me to write a story about it.

Victoria: Ah, I see.

Sally: You don’t seem very surprised.

Victoria: I have been dealing with my brother for a very long time. I expected some sort of attack sooner rather than later. That’s just who he is.

Sally: I’m sorry.

Victoria: Well, if he risked showing his hand, then he’s being careless. So, he either wants the information about what he’s doing to be out there, or he’s so wounded that he doesn’t give a damn anymore.

Victor: Hello, son.

Adam: Hey, guys.

[ Sighs ] Funny meeting you here. Were you also in the mood for a refreshing beverage?

Nick: We were looking for you, so we tracked you down.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, you got me. What’d you want to talk about? I love a good old newman male-bonding session.

Nick: We understand you’ve come across some information.

Adam: Could you be more specific?

Nick: Alright, cut the act, adam. What do you want? What’s the endgame here? I mean, is it blackmail? Because we know this isn’t about money. So, what do you want? You just want vick out of the big chair? Is that the goal? You want to be ceo of newman enterprises?

Victor: You know that’s not going to happen, okay? You know that the issue you have is with me.

Adam: Oh, wow, dad. You managed to yank the ceo position away from me again. And this time, I didn’t even have the job. Just a mere suggestion from nick woke the sleeping lion. Just anything to toy with me, right?

Victor: You know that’s not true. No matter how far I think you and I have come, you always manage to dredge up something in the past that makes you the victim, when in reality, right now you’re the one making the threats.

Adam: I haven’t threatened anyone…yet.

Victor: Don’t you see how history is repeating itself? I took a risk protecting your siblings from ashland locke, as I took a risk when I protected you after you accidentally killed A.J. Montalvo. I did not want that to become public. I didn’t want you to run around being accused of being a killer all your life.

Adam: Well, that’s what you refuse to get, dad, is you didn’t save me. You ruined me.

Victor: I thought you’d come to terms with all that.

Nick: I thought you had, too.

Adam: Have you come to terms with all the ways dad has protected you, nick?

Victor: What are you talking about?

Adam: I mean, really, how do you fit murder into a small, little, neat box? How are you coming to terms with taking a man’s life? And you’re a grown man. You’re not an impressionable little kid with blood on his hands. I hate to say it, but those feelings that I’m sure you are having — they’re not gonna just fade away. Even I couldn’t completely shut them down, as repressed as mine were. To this day, I will still hear a phrase or I will still see something that reminds me of my mother’s farm, and it all comes flooding back, all the pangs of guilt and shame, all the questions about my own morality. You know, I ask myself, “when I killed that man, was it really an accident, or deep down, did i want him to go down as hard as he did?” See, these are all things that are gonna be bubbling in your subconscious for the rest of your life, big brother. And for you, dad, you can keep your precious ceo chair, okay? I don’t want victoria’s job. Maybe all I want is to see justice finally served.

Victor: You listen to me, son. You’re playing a dangerous game. Don’t do that.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Look, what happened today only reinforces my decision to step away from the podcast, okay? And as far as chelsea, I don’t know. I mean, maybe she’s just missing some sort of connection or she feels a little bit lost, which i can understand, you know? I felt lost before you came back into my life, as well.

Lily: Mm. Good answer.

Billy: Look, it wasn’t a big deal. I hope you feel the same, okay? But now I am here and full-time your coo. So, please fill me in. What have I missed?

Lily: Um… [ Clears throat ] Yes. What have you missed? Um…there was more tension between devon and nate. Nate wants to move forward with the music festival idea, and devon thinks that it’s too risky for the first year of our merger.

Billy: Yeah, I can see devon’s point there.

Lily: Yeah, I can see both of their points, but ultimately i think it’s a good idea. I mean, think what a festival could do for our company. I think it’s next-level thinking, and why wouldn’t chancellor-winters want to be a part of that?

Victoria: Thank you so much for the heads-up about adam. It won’t be forgotten.

Sally: Not a problem. Just seemed like the right thing to do.

Victoria: For the record, i wouldn’t trust anything that adam says from this point on. He’s clearly out for revenge, and he is willing to use anyone to get what he wants. Can I ask you where you left things with him?

Sally: [ Sighs ] Let’s see. I thanked him for the info and then essentially called him a bastard for everything that he put me through. But I obviously didn’t mention that I would be telling you everything.

Victoria: But did you turn down his proposition to publish the story?

Sally: I was pretty adamant about it in the moment, even if I didn’t say the exact words. Why?

Victoria: Well, because if you didn’t shoot down the idea completely, this might be useful.

Next week on “the young and the restless”…

Diane: Talia morgan. Am I right? The investigative reporter?

Talia: Well, that depends. Who wants to know?

I don’t need protecting, okay? That’s what got us here in the first place. All this talk about protecting me — it’s making me start to understand adam.

Chelsea: Alright, let’s just come clean. Who wants to go first?

Young & The Restless Update

Recap written by Christine

Victor was happy to see Victoria back in her element. She said she was back on her game, and he didn’t have to worry about her anymore. Ashland was in the rearview mirror, and she was focused on moving the company forward. She wondered if he saw the conference video call with the division heads. He did, and he found it was very impressive. He fully supported her wanting to buy more companies, but he thought she should be careful. She’d carefully considered ever acquisition she wanted to make, and they were all good business. He wanted her to consult with him as she continued. She fully intended to, as he was her greatest counselor. Nick came in, and Victoria left for a meeting.

Victor asked what Nick thought of what Victoria was doing. Nick thought Victoria was strong and focused, but she was a little overzealous in her desire to remove any stain Ashland left on her or Newman. He understood though. He said Ashland humiliated Victoria more than once, and she got some payback by getting Victor’s money back, but she did love Ashland. Victor sighed that Victoria’s taste in men had always been her Achilles heel. Victor wished they’d been able to get Ashland out of town before his demise, but things were as they were. He was fine with Victoria proving herself.

Chance arrived for the meeting with Adam at the park. Chance, who was fed up with Adam fishing for information on Ashland’s death, said he was done playing games. The investigation was closed, Chance said, and he stated that Adam needed to move on. Adam couldn’t, because he saw incriminating evidence that Chance obviously chose to ignore. Adam said it’d look bad if it came out that Chance covered up a crime as a personal favor to his father in law.

Adam said this didn’t need to get adversarial, but he was curious why the DNA and fingerprint evidence wasn’t followed up on. Chance asked how Adam came by the information. Adam said maybe he found a police issued laptop on a bench. He didn’t think that was relevant how he came into the information, though. He knew Chance couldn’t be bought off, so he asked if Victor intimidated him into dropping the investigation. Chance stated that no one intimidated him, and he wasn’t going to be intimidated by Adam right now. Chance made a judgment call, and he stood by it. Adam thought it seemed like Chance lost his way. Chance said Adam was headed down a dangerous path.

Adam stated that he wasn’t anywhere near Ashland or his body the night he died. Chance said Adam knew what he was talking about. Chance was disappointed Adam was falling back into his self destructive ways in the name of vengeance. Chance said Adam alienated his family, pushed Sally away, saying he’d gotten his hands on a police issued laptop, and now he was threatening a cop who used to be his friend. “You hate your father that much?,” Chance asked. Adam said his father deserved to be punished for manipulating his family. He also maintained that the truth was important. He noted that Chance used to believe in the truth.

Adam showed up at Sally’s office. She wondered if she should call security. He said he was there to apologize. He said he shouldn’t have been so indirect with her. She said he’d been manipulative. She told him he wasn’t good at it, and she saw through it. He admitted he’d met his match with her. He was hoping things could be a little less hostile going forward. She didn’t think she was ever hostile. He agreed that was true. He suggested he and Sally understood each other deep down, regardless of what was being said. He still felt like she was the only one he could open up to. She appreciated that, and she said he could confide in her.

Adam stated that he was fortunate enough to stumble across a police report. Sally asked how one could stumble across a police report. He glossed over the answer to that question. He told her the police report included a lot of evidence against Victor that needed to come out, and Chance ignored. Sally was annoyed, because up until now, she thought Adam was being sincere and straightforward. She said he didn’t need a sympathetic ear, he needed help taking Victor down. She accused him of using their history to work her over again. He admitted he’d needed her to listen long enough for him to tell her what was going on. He said that didn’t change the fact that this was a goldmine of a story that could make a young media mogul’s career – he was going to give her this information and all she had to do was publish it.

Sally said if she published the story, it was the end of her career at Newman Media. Adam asked if Sally really wanted to work for a man who staged a car crash to cover up the fact that his favorite son killed his sister’s ex husband. Sally didn’t believe Nick would murder Ashalnd. Adam said it was an accident – Ashland was threatening Victoria. Sally knew Nick hit Ashland, but she thought it was as far as it went. Adam said apparently Nick inherited their dad’s boxing skills because one hit was all it took. Sally asked why Victor would cover up a clear cut case of self defense. Adam said the chess master couldn’t resist playing the game

He said this was all Victor – his siblings had nothing to do with it, and the story should reflect that. Adam thought this was a potentially award-winning story and other companies would be dying to hire her if she got fired. She was skeptical anyone would hire someone who went after their own boss. He thought people would respect her for doing the right thing. She wasn’t sure it was the right thing. He was adamant that Victor should face repercussions. Sally asked what about Chance. Adam gave Chance to opportunity to rectify this and he refused. She said Chance became someone else to throw under the bus in his battle against Victor, like he did with her. Adam countered that he didn’t toss Sally aside; he saved her job, and he protect her by keeping h+er out of the war he was about to start. She noted that he finally admitted the truth.

Now that Sally knew the truth, she didn’t know why she wanted to know. Adam said he didn’t want to hurt Sally. She said he couldn’t trust her enough to let her all the way in. He asked if she would’ve gone along with his plan or tried to talk him out of it. She didn’t see what difference it made now. He said she told him that their relationship was more important than this job, so he couldn’t take the risk. She contended that this meant he didn’t respect her priorities. He noted that she was afraid to publish his dad’s cover up because she might lose her job. He though that showed she realized being CEO was an opportunity of a lifetime. She thought he was being patronizing and smug. She asked if he expected her to thank him. He pointed out that she’d wanted the truth, but now she was mad at him for telling the truth. She’d thought the truth would bring closure, and she’d wanted to believe what they had was special. He was honest and said he thought it was special too. She once thought they could come back from this, but she didn’t think so anymore, because vengeance always came first for him. She said she never wanted his protection, she just wanted his trust, but he couldn’t risk losing his chance at vengeance by confiding in her. He wanted to say something, but she told him there was nothing he could say that would change anything. She understood he had one single goal – going after Victor. She thought it’d be his downfall. She bitterly thanked him for the scoop, but she made him no promises, because the days of doing what he wanted were over. She did what she wanted now. She left.

Sally went to Victoria’s office. Victoria thought the video conference went well. She asked if Sally was on board with the plan. Sally said she’d already started working on the things they discussed. Sally was there about Adam. Victoria asked if Sally was dating him again. Sally said that wasn’t happening. Sally stated that Adam claimed to have some information about Ashland’s death that wouldn’t show the Newmans in a favorable light. Victoria looked concerned, and she used the button to close the door. Sally said Adam wanted her to run a story on it. She noticed Victoria didn’t seem very surprised. Victoria had dealt with her brother long enough to expect him to attack sooner or later. Sally was sorry. Victoria said if Adam risked showing his hand, he was being careless – either he wanted the information to be out there, or he was so wounded he didn’t care anymore.

Victoria thanked Sally for the heads up and said it wouldn’t be forgotten. Victoria didn’t think Sally should trust anything Adam said anymore, because he was out for revenge and willing to use anyone to get what he wanted. Victoria asked where Sally left things. Sally said she thanked Adam, called him a bastard for what he put her through and didn’t mention that she was taking this news to Victoria. Victoria asked if Sally turned down the proposition to publish the story. Sally said she was pretty adamant about it in the moment, but she didn’t say the exact words. Victoria said if Sally didn’t shoot down the idea completely, this might be useful.

Chance ran into Nick at Crimson Lights on the patio and told him that Adam had the police report.

Victor and Nick tracked Adam down at Society and sat down at his table. Both stared at Adam with serious expressions. Nick said they knew Adam had come across some information. Adam asked them to be more specific. Nick told Adam to cut the crap and tell them what he wanted. Nick asked if Adam wanted to be CEO of Newman Enterprises. Victor said that wasn’t going to happen. Adam said Victor yanked the CEO seat from him again, and this time he didn’t even have the job. He inferred that Victor liked to toy with him. Victor thought Adam knew that wasn’t true. Victor said no matter how far he and Adam had come, Adam always managed to dredge up something to make himself the victim, when in reality, Adam was the one making the threats. Adam said he didn’t threaten anyone – yet. Victor said he took a risk and protected Adam’s siblings, just as he protected Adam when he accidentally killed AJ Montalvo. “You didn’t save me. You ruined me,” Adam contended. Victor and Nick thought Adam had come to terms with that. Adam asked if Nick came to terms with all the ways Victor protected him. He asked how Nick was coming to terms with taking a man’s life. Adam said Nick was a grown man, not a little kid. Adam told Nick those feelings weren’t going to go away. Things still triggered the memory in Adam, and he’d feel guilt and shame and he’d wonder if he really killed AJ on accident or if he meant to kill him. Adam said Nick would deal with that for the rest of his life. Adam didn’t want Victoria’s job, maybe he just wanted to see justice be served. Victor told Adam he was playing a dangerous game. Adam left.

Devon and Nate were outside of Lily’s office, both offering to step back to let the other enter first. Lily urged them to both come in. She wanted to have a chat and make sure they were all on the same page. Nate had something important to discuss, but he asked if they should wait for Billy. Lily said Billy wouldn’t be joining them, because he was wrapping up his final podcast. Devon thought Billy and Chelsea had found a groove. Lily said it was Billy’s choice, and she was glad. Nate had done some research about what it’d take to run their own music festival, and it was promising.

Devon said that running a music festival wasn’t the right move right now. Nate protested that Devon hadn’t even seen the research. Devon didn’t need to see it to know it’d take up a lot of their cash. Lily knew it’d take a significant amount of capital, but she thought the idea was interesting. Devon thought so too, and he’d said as much when Lily pitched it to him. He said Chancellor Winters was a new company, and they needed to save their money for any bumps in the road that they encountered instead of pouring it into starting a music festival from scratch. Nate thought that stance was unnecessarily defensive and too conservative, but he conceded it was Devon’s call. Nate had somewhere to be, so he left.

Devon said his opposition to the music festival had nothing to do with the issues between him and Nate. He said he’d also told Lily he was concerned it’d stretch the company too thin. She agreed, but she also said he’d suggested they explore it more, and that was exactly what Nate did. She asked if he could at least look at the data. He said he would. He was adamant that this wasn’t an attack on Nate – it was just business. The company was stable, and Devon wanted to keep it that way instead of risking it all by exceeding their grasp.

At Society, Nate told Elena that Devon just couldn’t help himself. If Nate said A, Devon said B. it was frustrating because Nate couldn’t figure out why Devon was being so antagonistic. Elena didn’t understand why Nate was so angry. Nate said he’d been looking forward to this new chapter – joining the family business was going to be his second act, but it was just trouble and conflict. Elena said maybe Nate should just walk away. He wasn’t ready to do that. He made a commitment to his family. He asked where he’d go if he walked away. She suggested medicine. He said he’d closed that door. He wanted a career at Chancellor Winters. It was off to a rocky start, but he wasn’t giving up.

At the recording studio, Billy pulled out of the kiss Chelsea planted on him and said he was sorry if he gave her the wrong impression. Chelsea was apologetic and said she didn’t know what came over her. He said it was okay. She wanted to pretend this never happened, and she began to record the podcast. The theme was goodbyes. Chelsea mentioned that this wasn’t the first time she and Billy said goodbye. He didn’t think they had to get into that. Chelsea thought the audience would be intrigued to know she and Billy were an item once upon a time. Billy said it was a long time ago. He said when there was a goodbye, there was a loss, but there were also new beginnings. Chelsea stared sadly at Billy as he said goodbye to the audience.

After the recording, Billy asked if he and Chelsea were okay, and she said they were. She didn’t want to bring this up again. He said they’d been so great at being open and honest on and off air that he wasn’t sure this was the way to handle it. She said it was. She wished him the best of luck at his COO position. He said he’d send the recording equipment to her. She didn’t want to do the podcast without him. It wouldn’t be the same. He asked what she’d do next. She wasn’t sure.

Billy went to Lily’s office. She was there alone. He told Lily he and Chelsea got their wires crossed, and she kissed him, but he set her straight. He thought Chelsea was feeling lonely. Lily asked if she should be concerned. He said it reinforced his decision to leave the podcast. He said Chelsea might feel lost – he understood that because he felt lost before Lily came into his life. He asked what he’d missed as COO. She told him about the meeting and tension between Devon and Nate. Billy saw Devon’s point. Lily saw Nate and Devon’s point, but she thought a festival was a good idea.

Chloe ran into Chelsea at Crimson Lights. Chelsea had a hard day and didn’t have the energy to get into it with Chloe. Chloe just wanted to talk. Chelsea didn’t want to go into detail, but she messed up and she felt stupid. Chloe was sorry things had been strained between them. Chloe still loved Chelsea and was there for her. Chelsea said it felt like she couldn’t catch a break lately. There was nothing anyone could do to help.

Adam and Chelsea both ended up at the park, and they saw each other.

Recap written by Christine

Phyllis met Summer at Society. Summer had realized she recognized the journalist she saw Phyllis and Nikki with last night. Talia Morgan was based out of LA. Summer thought this was about Diane, not Ashland, as Phyllis and Nikki had claimed. Summer knew Talia was staying at the Grand Phoenix with no check out date on record. Summer said Phyllis had better not use this journalist to do a hatchet job on Diane. Phyllis said she wasn’t going to do that. She stated that she’d been a model employee at Marchetti, but Summer countered that Phyllis hadn’t even been there long enough to collect a paycheck. Phyllis insisted that she wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize her dream of working with Summer.

Summer was skeptical. It didn’t make sense to her that Talia would want to talk to Phyllis about Ashland’s death, when she barely knew him. Phyllis said she begged Nikki to let her go to the meeting with Talia. Summer asked why. “I did it for you,” Phyllis said. Phyllis lied and said she wanted to make sure Talia’s story on Ashland wasn’t going to throw Summer, Kyle and Harrison under the bus. Phyllis insisted she only cared about being a good mom to Summer and a good grandmother to Harrison.

Summer really hoped Phyllis was telling her the truth. Phyllis promised everything would be okay. Billy walked up and asked if Phyllis got the paperwork on the final sale of The Grand Phoenix. She had, and she’d looked it over already. It looked fine. He told her to sign in when she was ready. He walked away. Summer knew how much the hotel meant to Phyllis, and she asked if Phyllis was really ready to say goodbye to it. Phyllis looked at Chancellor Winters’ offer. She said all the hard work she’d done at the hotel boiled down to numbers on a screen. Summer encouraged Phyllis to take some time to think this through, but Phyllis signed the tablet and made the sale official.

Phyllis went to Billy and told him it was done. He was surprised she did it so soon. She saw no point prolonging the inevitable. He asked if she was sure she wanted to do this. He felt there was more to the story. She said it was her chance to prove to the naysayers, once again, that there was nothing she couldn’t do.

Chelsea was dismayed to run into Sally at the park. They shot barbs at each other. Sally said this meeting was fortuitous because she’d been concerned about Chelsea. She mentioned that she saw Chelsea and Adam having a heated discussion at the rooftop bar. Chelsea said it was none of Sally’s business, but she and Adam were fine. She said they didn’t see eye to eye over something Connor-related, but they worked it out. Sally was glad, because Connor didn’t need to get involved in his parents’ issues. Chelsea said she, Connor and Adam and had an unbreakable bond. Sally made a snide remark about Adam and Chelsea’s relationship Chelsea admitted her story with Adam had painful chapters, but they’d healed, and in a way they’d always be together, because of their incredible history and their child. She crowed that there was nothing stronger than the bond she and Adam shared.

Sally agreed that Chelsea and Adam had a history, keyword: history, since there was no going back. Chelsea said Sally was also history where Adam was concerned. Chelsea minimized Adam and Sally’s relationship, stating that it didn’t last long, and it wasn’t very deep. She said it was admirable that Sally and Adam had moved past it. Sally insisted that what she and Adam once had was passionate, real and incredibly strong. It was so strong that Adam put her best interests first. She said the only reason he broke up with her was to support her dreams, and there was only one word for that sacrifice – love; extraordinary love. Chelsea was in the process of making a snippy comment, but Sally interrupted. Sally said Adam still cared about her. While Sally conceded that Adam also still cared about Chelsea, she accused Chelsea of pretending there was more to her relationship with Adam than there still was. Billy summoned Chelsea to the recording studio. Chelsea said Sally might think she understood Adam and knew everything about Chelsea, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Chelsea met Billy at the recording studio, and she was hopeful that his message meant that he listened to what she said and decided not to quit the podcast after all. Billy hadn’t changed his mind. He wanted to support Lily and he made a commitment to Chancellor Winters. She decided to just accept it instead of trying to convince him to stay. He thought they could do one last podcast where he passed the torch to her. She wasn’t sure, because she was so new to podcasts. He said he didn’t know anything about podcasts when he started either. He said she turned this dour boring podcast into something that sparkled, just like she did, and he was grateful she came into the picture. Chelsea and Billy kicked around ideas for their final episode. He thought she’d do great at running the podcast solo, but she said it was because she had him to banter with. He agreed that they were good together, and he said their relationship was unlike any other he had in his life. She suddenly kissed him.

Diane came into Jack’s office to get his take on some work she’d done before she showed it to Mariah. Jack thought Diane needed to trust her own judgment. She valued his opinion, and she wanted to capitalize on his vast experience. He said if she was going to succeed, she had to own her decisions and rise or fall with them. Kyle was out in the hall and he saw Diane go around the desk and lean in close to Jack as he looked at her work. Kyle rushed into the office, and he told Diane there was a pressing matter they needed to discuss. Once he got her outside, he asked her what she was doing with his dad.

Diane said she was just getting Jack’s advice on her work. Kyle countered that she worked for Marchetti, not Jabot. She said it was easier for her to take advice from Jack. She wanted Kyle to be proud of her. She promised she’d go to Mariah next time. He didn’t believe that was the real reason she was in Jack’s office. He accused her of flirting with his father, and he demanded that she stop. She told him he was misreading the situation – she and Jack were just friends. He hoped so. She walked away.

In his suite, Adam was pleased that the thief who stole Kevin’s laptop was also technically savvy enough to hack into it. The guy said it was going to cost double. Kevin showed up and banged on the door. Once the laptop and messenger bag were out of sight, Adam opened the door. He acted like he didn’t have the computer and claimed he was in a business meeting. Kevin accused the thief of being a thief, and the guy took offense and stood up, showing he was much larger than Kevin. Kevin said there was nothing on his computer worth seeing, besides, his files were well-protected. In the course of the discussion, Kevin mentioned that Adam was trying to get something on Victor. Kevin said he wouldn’t press charges if Adam just gave him back his laptop.

Adam noted that Kevin had no evidence that he stole the computer. He asked if Kevin had a warrant. Kevin didn’t, so Adam showed him out. Adam asked the goon if he’d be able to get to the files. The man didn’t think it’d be an issue. However, now that he knew that the target was Victor Newman, he wanted more money. Adam balked about the constant fee increases, but he promised to make this worth the guy’s while.

Jack texted Adam and asked to meet. Just then, the guy accessed the files. Adam read the police report. He learned about the unidentified driver found in Ashland’s car. The man wanted his money, and he left after receiving a thick envelope from Adam. Adam concluded that Victor staged the crash and Chance looked the other way.

Kevin went downstairs and talked with Chloe on the phone. He brought her up to speed on the laptop situation and told her he was totally screwed.

Sally went to her office and told Chloe she ran into Chelsea. Chelsea assumed they got into it instead of walking away. Sally said she couldn’t help it because Chelsea rubbed the end of her relationship with Adam in her face. Chloe snapped that she was sick and tired of hearing Adam’s name every damn day. Sally said this wasn’t about Adam – it was about Chelsea and the way she treated Sally. Sally said it wasn’t her fault Chelsea couldn’t rekindle her failed relationship with Adam, and it wasn’t Sally’s fault that Chelsea left a lucrative career to babble into a microphone with Billy, Chloe thought it was a two way street. Sally admitted she gave as good as she got, but she pointed out that Chelsea didn’t like her. Chloe said Chelsea and Sally were both hurting, and they needed to chill out. Chloe said, thanks to Adam, she was dealing with a much bigger issue than Sally’s little squabble with Chelsea.

Chloe said she and Kevin thought Adam stole Kevin’s laptop. Sally learned this was about Ashland’s death, and she said Adam had been obsessed with Chance’s investigation. She was sorry Kevin got dragged into this. Sally said she wouldn’t ask what was on the computer that had Kevin so worried. She said if Adam found what he was looking for, what was he going to do with it?

Adam met with Jack at Jabot. Jack just wanted to know if Adam was interested in being his co-CEO. Adam appreciated Jack even making the offer, but he declined because he had another project he was working on. Jack was worried Adam’s project had something to do with his animosity toward his father. Jack urged Adam to use his energy to get the happiness and success he deserved. The support and friendship meant a lot to Adam. Jack said he’d leave the job open, in case Adam changed his mind. Kyle walked in and Adam left. Kyle was unhappy when he learned Jack had offered Adam the role of co-CEO, then he was relieved Adam declined. Kyle was sorry – he knew Jack was fond of Adam, but Jabot didn’t need him or his baggage. Jack said Adam might change his mind. Kyle hoped not – there were a lot of personalities to manage in this building. Jack was displeased with Kyle for the thing with Diane earlier.

Jack told Kyle to stop babysitting him. Kyle said he was just looking out for Jack. Jack said he could look out for himself. Kyle hoped Jack knew Diane was becoming attached to him. Jack didn’t know that for sure, and he said Kyle didn’t either. Jack acknowledged the there was a growing trust between him and Diane, but he had no intention of having a romantic relationship with her. Kyle was glad to hear that, but he’d noticed Jack and Diane spending more time together lately. Jack said they were acting as parents and grandparents. Jack said he was being polite, and at times friendly with Diane, but he was always on guard where she was concerned. He knew the damage Diane could do, and he wouldn’t let it happen again. He told Kyle to stop looking for trouble where there was none and focus on his beautiful wife, amazing son and tremendous new job. Kyle said Jack was right, as usual.

Later, in the hallway, Summer walked up to Kyle and asked why he was so preoccupied that he didn’t even see her. He said he saw his mom flirting with his dad, and when he confronted her, she denied it. Then he’d gotten scolded by Jack about it. Kyle said he realized his dad was right. He noted that Summer had been spending a lot of time worrying about their parents too. Summer said they had to protect the company. He said their parents were adults, even if they hated each other. He didn’t think they should spend their days keeping an eye on Diane, Jack and Phyllis. Summer wanted to believe her mother, but she got the feeling Phyllis wasn’t being honest with her. Kyle understood, because he sensed his mom wasn’t being honest with him. He said their moms hadn’t done anything wrong, that they knew of, and so they had to stop hovering. Summer agreed it was time for her and Kyle to step back and let go.

Adam went home and called Chance to set up a meeting.

Phyllis said goodbye to The Grand Phoenix, slowly walking around and taking it all in. she called Talia and asked if they could meet to talk about Diane.

Diane: Any chance you can spare me a few minutes of your time?

Jack: Yeah. What’s on your mind?

Diane: Oh. I wanted to show you the latest key art and copy for the marchetti launch. I was hoping to get your take before bringing it to mariah.

Jack: You’ve been coming to me a lot lately for my professional opinion. If you intend to run everything you’re working on by me first, I think that’s a big mistake.

Phyllis: I’d love to think that you invited me here for some mother-daughter time, but I could tell — I could tell by your face that you did not.

Summer: Couldn’t stop thinking about that journalist that I saw you and grandma meeting with.

Phyllis: What about her?

Summer: After we parted ways, I realized I recognize her. It took me a minute, but then I put it all together. Talia morgan is a highly respected investigative reporter based out of los angeles. And I’m guessing she didn’t mean to talk to the two of you in order to write about ashland’s car crash.

Phyllis: That’s not impossible.

Summer: Mom, I didn’t buy your story last night, and I’m not buying it now. In fact, I have a new theory. All I needed to do was connect the dots. Writer who’s always chasing the next big story… los angeles… diane.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Chelsea: Just when you think it’s safe to go for a walk in the park.

Sally: Actually, this run-in is a bit fortuitous because i was just thinking about how concerned I was about you.

Chelsea: You are concerned about me?

Sally: Well, I was at the rooftop bar at the athletic club earlier, and I happened to see you and adam in what seemed to be a pretty intense conversation. I was going to say something, but I didn’t want to intrude. I hope everything’s okay.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You can, uh, set up over there. I got to say, I appreciate that you’re a jack-of-all-trades — clever enough to get kevin’s laptop without him seeing it and technically savvy enough to hack into it, too.

Lucas: You know, two-in-one package. But let’s be clear, it’s gonna double my fee.

Adam: You already said it was gonna be more because you work for the police. Now, this? Starting to feel like I’m being swindled here.

Lucas: Hey, I got bills to pay.

Adam: Look, you will be more than fairly compensated for your services. Let’s just hope that phase two doesn’t prove to be too challenging. Okay? It’s not like we’re trying to hack into the cia firewall or anything. All I need is access to the local police report on the ashland locke case.

Lucas: Alright, got it.

[ Pounding on door ]

Kevin: Adam, open the damn door! Adam! Open the door! After years on the battlefield and multiple concussions,

[ Pounding on door ]

Kevin: Damn it, adam, give me my computer.

Adam: I have no idea what you’re talking about, kevin.

Kevin: That is a load of bull.

Adam: As you can see, I’m in the middle of a meeting with a business associate. So can we do whatever this is another time?

Kevin: I wonder what kind of business you’re discussing. I doubt it has anything to do with investment banking and more to do with breaking into someone’s car and taking their computer!

Lucas: Hey, wait a minute. Are you calling me a thief?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Yeah, kevin.

Kevin: You think you’re gonna find something incriminating on there, don’t you? You’re wasting your time. There is nothing on my computer worth seeing. Besides, I have built up walls of protection around my files that only I can penetrate. So save yourself the double disappointment and give me back my computer. Now.

Adam: Kevin, I’ve already told you, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Kevin: Oh, give it up. Tell you what? Play nice, I won’t even press charges. But I am warning you, this is a one-time-only offer. What’s it gonna be?

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: Not that it’s any of your business, but adam and I are fine. We weren’t seeing eye-to-eye there for a minute about something that had to do with connor, but we worked it out.

Sally: Well, good. I’m glad, for connor’s sake, ’cause he doesn’t need to get involved in his parents’ issues.

Yeah, I agree. Fortunately, our son has always known, and will always know, how much both his parents love him. We have a bond, the three of us, that’s just unbreakable.

Sally: Hmm, sounds like the perfect relationship. Oh, [Scoffs] Wait. Sorry.

Chelsea: I don’t deny, my story with adam has had some unbearably painful chapters, but luckily we healed those old wounds. And the thing is, even if we’re not technically together, in a way we always will be because of our incredible history, all of those years, and bringing a child into the world together. We have a deep connection. Nothing is stronger than the bond we share.

Jack: You’re going to have to start trusting your own judgment. Stop second-guessing yourself. You don’t need my opinion in order to have confidence in your own.

Diane: But I value your opinion. And since marchetti is under the jabot umbrella, I figure something like this is going to cross your desk eventually. Besides, I want to capitalize on your vast experience and knowledge.

Jack: Much as I appreciate that, if you’re going to succeed around here, you’re gonna have to start owning your decisions and be prepared to rise or fall with them.

Diane: Good advice. Next time, I’ll go straight to mariah. But this time, since I’m already here —

Jack: Okay, okay, okay, I’ll look at what you have. What is it?

Diane: Yeah.

Jack: Actually, this is quite good. I think kyle will like it.

Diane: Mm.

Jack: Kyle, what can we do for you?

Summer: Look, mom, I’ve done my homework. I know that talia morgan is staying at the grand phoenix with no checkout date on record.

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. How would you know that?

Summer: Helps to be the owner’s daughter.

Phyllis: Oh, summer, [Sighs] You’re jumping to conclusions. You’re blowing this out of proportion.

Summer: Mom, you’d better not be using this journalist to create some sort of hatchet job on diane.

Phyllis: I’m not gonna do that. I told you I’d never do that. I mean, just because I’m not walking around with a smile plastered on my face. You know, we — yeah. I mean, I’m not attacking diane, not doing… I have been the model employee at marchetti.

Summer: Mom, you haven’t even been there long enough to collect a paycheck. So forgive me if I’m not ready to throw you a parade for your good behavior, okay? Especially given my suspicions.

Phyllis: I love working with you. This is my dream — to work with my daughter. Why would I want to screw that up? Diane jenkins is not worth it.

Summer: I want to believe what you’re saying, mom. I really do. But I have a lot of questions about this talia morgan thing. It makes no sense why she would need to talk to you about ashland’s death. I mean, grandma, I sort of get because of the company and victoria. But you barely knew the guy.

Phyllis: Okay, okay, okay. Just… [ Sighs ] I begged nikki to go to the meeting with her. I begged her.

Summer: Why would you do that?

Phyllis: I did it for you.

Summer: For me?

Phyllis: Yeah. You know, I wanted to know what this talia morgan’s angle was. You know? I wanted to do my own reconnaissance, make sure that she wasn’t — she wasn’t desiring to throw you and kyle and little harrison under the bus. You know, I wanted to find out what she was gonna do and tell you what to watch out for. That’s — that’s what I was doing. I only care about being a good mom to you and a good grandma to that little harrison. Right? So that’s what that was about, whether you believe it or not.

Zyrteeeec…

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: A one-time offer? What is this, kevin? Some kind of threat?

Kevin: Threat, warning — call it whatever you like. Just give me back my computer.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I know that you hate me. So this unfounded accusation is personal. You don’t have any proof to back up what you’re saying, kevin?

Kevin: The only proof I need is that smug look on your face.

Adam: You don’t have a shred of evidence. If you did, you wouldn’t have come here alone. You’d be with an officer, holding a search warrant. Unless I missed that part. Is there a cop outside, waiting to make a big entrance?

Kevin: No. I’m here alone. There is no warrant.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Well, then, I guess we’re done here.

Lucas: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Sorry for the interruption. But, uh, was kevin bluffing, or was he telling the truth? Is the firewall impenetrable, or can you get through it?

Lucas: It shouldn’t be a problem to access a simple police report. As good as fisher claims to be, I’m sure I’m just as good, if not better.

Adam: That is what I’m talking about. It’s exactly the kind of service that I’m paying for.

Lucas: Speaking of paying, you didn’t mention that this report had anything to do with your father. If you’re planning on making moves against victor newman, the price for my skills just went up.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Geez, man, is there anything that doesn’t merit a surcharge, in your opinion? If you deliver, trust me, I will make it worth your while.

Lucas: Alright.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone rings ]

Chloe: Hi. How’d it go with adam?

Kevin: Not great. He denied everything, called my bluff.

Chloe: I’m sorry, but I have to ask. Do you think it’s possible he didn’t steal your laptop? Maybe it was just some random coincidence?

Kevin: I appreciate the wishful thinking, but I highly doubt it. He had this shady-looking guy there with him. I would bet everything that he’s the one who actually stole it, at adam’s request.

Chloe: And there was nothing that you could do?

Kevin: Couldn’t exactly turn the place upside-down with the two of them sitting there.

Chloe: So where does that leave you now?

Kevin: It leaves me totally screwed.

Summer: All I can say, mom, is I really hope that you’re telling me the truth right now.

Phyllis: Everything’s gonna be okay, I promise. Hey.

Billy: Hey, there, ladies. Listen, congratulations on your new job at marchetti. How is that going?

Phyllis: Uh, great. I’m really excited.

Billy: That’s good. Well, I’m happy for the both of you. Listen, I don’t want to interrupt. I just wanted to make sure that you got the paperwork on the final sale of grand phoenix.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Billy: Lily sent it to you a little bit ago.

Phyllis: Yep. Yep, I did. Looks great.

Billy: Okay, good. Well, have your lawyers look over it. There’s nothing in there that’s gonna surprise you. It’s exactly what we agreed to.

Phyllis: It’s right here. I’ve already looked it over. It seems fine.

Billy: Alright. Well, again, no pressure. Just sign that whenever you’re ready, and we’ll take the next step.

Phyllis: Mm.

Billy: I’m gonna go check on my order. Good to see you both.

Summer: Mom, I know how much the grand phoenix means to you, everything it represents. Have you really considered this thoroughly? Are you absolutely sure that you are ready to say goodbye to it?

Kyle: Did I miss something? I wasn’t aware of a marchetti-jabot meeting on the books.

Jack: There wasn’T. This was an — an impromptu business conversation.

Kyle: I see. I’ve been looking for you, mom. There’s a pressing matter I need you to review.

Diane: Oh, okay. Well, I think we’ve covered everything here. Lead the way.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Diane: So, what is it that you need?

Kyle: I need you to tell me exactly what you were doing in there with my dad. Hi, I’m nancy.

Phyllis: Wow. Those — all those hours of hard work that I put into that hotel

[Sighs] All boil down to numbers on a screen. Significant numbers — that’s for sure — but still numbers nonetheless.

Summer: Mom, didn’t you hear billy? He said that there’s no rush for this, and I agree with him. I think that you need to take a minute — take all the time you need to figure out if this is what you really want.

Phyllis: Um… no, no. Time to make it official. Alright? Here we go. Whew. Okay, well, there you go. Okay? [ Laughs ]

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] So good.

[ Clears throat ] That’s done.

Billy: Yeah, I saw that. Happened sooner than I expected.

Phyllis: Why prolong the inevitable?

Billy: I got to ask you. You’re sure you want to do this? Seems like there’s more to the story than you’re telling me.

Phyllis: Yeah, there is. You know, all the naysayers in this town who look down on me. It’s my chance to prove to them once again… that there’s nothing I can’t do.

Diane: I just wanted to get jack’s advice about something I’ve been working on. You know, I’m still finding my way, and I want to make sure I get things right.

Kyle: But why are you going to my father when you work for marchetti, not jabot?

Diane: Well, to be honest, it’s — [Sighs] It’s easier for me to take advice and take constructive criticism from jack. Kyle, I want you to be proud of me. And I don’t want you to regret your decision to give me this opportunity. But I promise, next time, I will go straight to mariah.

Kyle: Yeah, I don’t think so.

Diane: You don’t want me to go to her first?

Kyle: I mean, I don’t think that’s the real reason you were in there. I saw you through the window. You were obviously flirting with him. And I’m here to tell you now, it needs to stop. It’s wrong.

Diane: Kyle, you are completely misreading the situation and the dynamic between jack and me. I appreciate his guidance and friendship, but that’s it. There’s nothing more.

Kyle: I really hope so.

[ Sighs ]

Sally: It seems like you have misinterpreted what adam and I found together. Just because it’s over doesn’t mean what we had wasn’t intensely passionate, real, and incredibly strong. So strong, in fact, adam ultimately chose to put my best interests first.

Chelsea: So you’re saying he dumped you for your own good?

Sally: The only reason he broke up with me was to protect and support my dreams. He wanted to make sure that i got this incredible opportunity where he knew I would flourish. And there is only one word for that kind of sacrifice — love. Extraordinary love.

Chelsea: I can come up with a few other words for this load —

Sally: Adam still cares about me, and I’m sure he still cares about you, but it seems like you’re projecting a lot more onto your connection than what actually still exists.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Billy: Can you meet me

in the recording studio?

Chelsea: I have to go. Let me make something clear. You may think you understand adam and know everything about me. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Jack: Can you come by the

office?

Lucas: I’m in. I accessed the gcpd portal as kevin fisher, and I was able to pull up the police report on the ashland locke case.

Adam: Oh, I knew it. Ashland was at victoria’s house that night. “There was A…” there was an altercation. Nick hit him, and ashland was presumed dead, but then somehow he went missing. Wait a minute. Oh. Oh, here we go. Well, well, well. Isn’t that fascinating? Ashland’s body was found in his car at the bottom of a ravine, but an unidentified driver was caught on tape in it at a nearby gas station before the time of the crash. Right. Only a small sample of locke’s blood was found and a partial fingerprint, but it doesn’t match the deceased.

Lucas: Look, buddy, I don’t know what this has to do with your father, and frankly, i don’t care. Okay? So if that’s all you need from me, I’m gonna take my money and be on my way, alright?

Adam: You’ll find that that more than covers it, including all the additional fees that you tacked on, okay? Thanks, man. Nicely done.

Lucas: Okay. Pleasure doing business with you.

[ Sighing ]

Adam: Conclusion — ashland locke died from head trauma most likely caused from the car crash. Yeah. [ Sighs ] Somehow I don’t think that’s what happened. Dear old dad had the crash staged, and chance decided to look the other way. (Vo) is she tired? Sad? Mad? Bored?

“The young and the restless”

will continue. ( )

Billy: Hey, thanks for coming by.

Chelsea: How could I not? I was intrigued by your message.

Billy: Intrigued by my message? That was a very simple text message. What was so alluring?

Chelsea: Well, I thought, after our last conversation, this is the last place you would ask me to meet you. You said you were stepping away from all this.

Billy: Yes, I-I did.

Chelsea: So, did you listen to what I had to say, and you’re gonna reconsider? Did you decide to follow your passion, and you’re gonna continue working with me?

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: There you are. I was wondering where you were.

Sally: Sorry I’m late. I ran into chelsea.

Chloe: Oh, let me guess. You got into it when you should have just walked away.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] I can’t help it. That woman brings out the worst in me, especially when she takes every opportunity to rub the end of my relationship with adam in my face.

Chloe: It always just comes back to adam, doesn’t it? I am just so sick and tired of hearing his name every damn day!

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Jack: Adam. Hey, come on in.

Adam: Sorry, I didn’t reply to your texts earlier. I was tied up. Is now a good time?

Jack: Yeah, it’s a great time. I just wanted to touch base with you and see where your head was on coming to jabot as my new co-ceo. Have a seat.

Adam: [ Sighs ] So, I, um, promised you I would give it some serious thought. And, uh, I have. Working side-by-side with you would be an honor, and it would be a great opportunity.

Jack: We could be a powerful team.

Adam: I agree. And it means a lot to me that you even extended this offer. But, um, unfortunately, I’m going to have to decline.

Jack: Okay. I won’t deny that I am disappointed. Could I ask why you’re passing?

Adam: I actually have another project that I am working on, and I need to see if it’s going to pan out.

Jack: I’m not sure I like the sound of that. If whatever you’re working on has anything to do with what we discussed — your animosity toward your father — I can tell you, revenge is never quite as sweet as it’s cracked up to be.

Adam: Well, you don’t need to worry about me, jack. I am — I’m good.

Jack: You left that job because you wanted to put all things newman behind you. So do that. Break the cycle once and for all with victor. Put yourself out there, find something positive, and never look back.

Adam: Yeah, that’s — that’s ultimately what I’m trying to do, jack.

Jack: Good. You’ve come a long way already. I hate to see you lose well-earned momentum. Use all of that energy in a way that brings you the happiness and success that you deserve.

Adam: Well, thank you for the advice. Really, I can’t tell you how much your support and your friendship means. And I really hope that you find somebody worthy to sit next to you at the helm at jabot.

Jack: No rush. As a matter of fact, I will leave that job open just in case you change your mind.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: Adam, I hope you’ll take to heart what I just said to you.

Adam: I will.

[ Knock on door ]

Kyle: Uh, sorry. Am I interrupting something?

Adam: No, I was just leaving.

Jack: Take care, adam.

Adam: See ya, jack.

Kyle: I was just coming to update you about the marchetti budget meeting that just wrapped up, but that can wait. What was the visit from adam all about?

Jack: I offered him your old job at jabot.

Kyle: What? Co-ceo?

Jack: Yeah, I was gonna tell you, but I was gonna wait to find out if he was interested.

Kyle: And was he?

Jack: You can relax. He turned me down.

Kyle: Thank god.

[ Sighs ] Sorry, dad. I know how fond you are of him. And to be honest, adam is a talented executive. But jabot doesn’t need him or his baggage.

Jack: Before you go too far in dissing the man, there’s always the chance he will change his mind and come.

Kyle: I really hope he doesn’T. We have a lot of personalities to manage in this building.

Jack: It seems to me you’re managing a lot today.

Kyle: Meaning?

Jack: I think we need to discuss what happened with diane in here earlier.

[Acoustic soul music throughout]

Jack: I didn’t for one minute buy your flimsy excuse for getting diane out of here. Stop babysitting.

Kyle: I wouldn’t describe it like that. I was just looking out for my father.

Jack: I can look out for myself, thank you very much.

Kyle: You and everyone else are worried about how I would deal with my mother being back in my life. I’m handling it fine. I’m more concerned about you. And I hope you know she’s becoming attached to you.

Jack: I can’t know that for sure, and neither can you. But I can assure you, though there is a growing level of trust between us, I am always cautious where diane is concerned, and I have no interest in having a romantic relationship with her.

Kyle: I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear that. But I have noticed the two of you spending more and more time together lately.

Jack: Yes, as parents and grandparents. I assure you, I am keeping an eye on diane. Look, you have decided to give her a second chance, and I think that’s commendable. I, on the other hand, though I am being polite and at times friendly, I am always on guard where she’s concerned. I know the damage that she can do. I am not gonna let that happen again. Are we clear on this?

Kyle: Of course.

Jack: Good. Stop looking for trouble where there is none. Focus on your beautiful wife, your amazing son, and this tremendous new job you have — all the good things in your life.

Kyle: As usual, you’re right.

Billy: I did not change my mind. I’m sorry. I need to devote 100% of myself to my job as coo, not only to support lily but I made a commitment to chancellor-winters. I hope you can understand that.

Chelsea: I could make a whole speech, you know, about how you should do what you want to do, as opposed to what you think you need to do, and how that will affect your overall happiness in life. But you know what? I’m not gonna do it. I’m not gonna do it. You made a choice, and I have to respect that.

Billy: I appreciate that.

Chelsea: Okay. So if you’re so determined to be a corporate drone, why did you ask me to meet you tonight?

Billy: Well, I thought we could do one last podcast, almost like a farewell, where i officially pass the torch to you.

Chelsea: Just, that makes me feel weird. I’m so new to this. I don’t feel comfortable doing the podcast by myself.

Billy: I understand that. I mean, look, I didn’t know what I was doing when I first sat in this chair. I think some people would say that I still don’t know what I’m doing. But you got this. I know you do. I mean, you’ve got the instincts. You proved that when you came in here and changed what I was doing and made it better. You got a finger on the pulse of what people want to hear.

Chelsea: It’s one thing to fine-tune something that already exists. It’s much different than starting from scratch.

Billy: I believe in you, chelsea. Like I said, you transformed this dour, boring podcast into something uplifting, something that even sparkles, much like you. Okay? And I am very grateful that you came into the picture.

Sally: This isn’t about adam. This is about chelsea and the way that she treats me. It is not my fault that she couldn’t rekindle her failed relationship with him. And it is not my fault that she chose to walk away from a lucrative career to babble into a microphone with billy abbott. Yet somehow I am still the enemy.

Chloe: I think it’s a two-way street.

Chelsea: I give as good as i get, because, clearly, that woman loves seeing me suffer. But I refuse to give her the satisfaction.

Chloe: Look, I know that you’re hurting, but chelsea is hurting, too. She’s lost a lot. But this isn’t a competition, and you both need to just chill out. And thanks to adam, I am dealing with a much bigger problem than your little squabble with chelsea.

Sally: What are you talking about?

Chloe: I’m talking about what your ex did to kevin. (Nathan m) secondhand smoke

Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Summer: Kyle? What’s going on? You didn’t even see me. What’s got you so preoccupied?

Kyle: I saw my mom in my dad’s office.

Summer: Okay. What’s the big deal about that?

Kyle: She was not-so-subtly flirting with him.

Summer: Oh, my god. What did you do?

Kyle: Call her on it, of course, but she very sincerely denied it and told me I had it all wrong. And I warned my dad. I got a major scolding.

Summer: About what?

Kyle: Spending too much time worrying about my mother and what she was up to with him and with phyllis. I realized my dad’s right. And I know how stressed out you’ve been about my mom and phyllis, just as much as I have.

Summer: Because we have to protect the company. Any issues between our mothers is potentially problematic.

Kyle: But they’re adults. Even if they’re adults who hate each other. And we can’t keep constantly spending our days keeping an eye on them.

Summer: I get it. I get your logic, but I have reservations. I just left from talking to my mom, and she swore up and down that she’s not up to anything regarding diane. But I just don’t know if I can believe her. As much as I want to, just something about it doesn’t ring true to me.

Kyle: I know the feeling. I felt the same way after talking to my mom. But as of now, they haven’t done anything wrong that we know of. If they cross a line, then we can act. Right now, we need to stop hovering, let go of all the tension we’ve been carrying around.

Summer: Okay. I’m with you. It’s time for us to step back and let go.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Thud ] Talia. Hi. It’s phyllis summers. I’m great. Thank you. Um, listen, I’m in the grand phoenix lobby. Do you have a second to meet? Actually… I have some ideas regarding your interest in diane jenkins.

Chloe: Kevin’s laptop was stolen, and we have every reason to believe that adam is the one behind it.

Sally: Why would adam want kevin’s laptop?

Chloe: Kevin thinks it has to do with finding out more about ashland locke’s death.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I mean, adam has been obsessed with chance’s investigation. I’m just sorry that kevin got dragged into this.

Chloe: Yeah, you and me both.

Sally: Adam seems convinced that victor and the rest of his family have something to hide. I guess he just got fed up asking questions, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Chloe: Well, needless to say, kevin is furious.

Sally: Yeah, I bet. I’m not going to ask you to tell me what was on that computer that has got kevin so worried. So the question becomes, if adam finds what he’s looking for, what the hell is he gonna do with it next?

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Adam: [ Sighs ] Hey, chance, it’s adam. Hey, look, we need to get together as soon as possible. It’s urgent. And believe me, you’re gonna want to take this meeting.

Chelsea: What if we focus on midlife career changes?

Billy: Hmm.

Chelsea: Finding new passion after years of going down another path?

Billy: Yeah, see, I’m gonna live till I’m 110, so I’m not quite ready for the midlife crisis.

Chelsea: Oh, you’re delusional and in denial.

Billy: True, true. But you’re onto something. What if we focus on continuing to find your true life passion throughout your life?

Chelsea: Kind of like the old adage, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Billy: Look at you. You’re gonna be brilliant at this.

Chelsea: No, it’s just because I have you here to bounce ideas off of.

Billy: Well, yeah, we are good together. This relationship is unlike any other one that I have in my life. It’s a unique connection.

Billy: Good morning.

Lily: Good morning.

Billy: You know what they say about the early bird.

Lily: Um… she rules the world?

Billy: No. She misses her morning mocha and croissant in bed.

Lily: Oh, is that how the saying goes?

Billy: Historically.

Lily: Well, I didn’t want to wake you. Thank you.

Billy: Oh, thank you very much for that. Getting an early start on the day?

Chelsea: Enjoying your new life of leisure?

Adam: [Chuckles] Yeah. You know, no work, no responsibilities. It’s pretty great.

Chelsea: Why are you reading the Newman Media website? Trying to stay abreast on how things are faring under the new CEO?

Adam: Connor’s taken a little detour from sports lately.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Into what?

Adam: Coding. He’s, uh, fascinated by it.

Victor: Coding? What the hell is coding? Whoa. Huh. I’ll be damned. You know, we miss that boy. Both Nikki and I do. Whenever he’s here, he brings a smile to our faces. I’m sure that kid will be very, very successful.

Adam: Unlike his dad. Serial failure.

Victor: I didn’t say anything like that.

Adam: No, but it was implied.

[Clears throat] You rarely say what you actually mean.

Victor: What do you mean, what’s implied? That’s pure nonsense you’re talking about. You trying to goad me into something or what? You trying to piss me off? Not gonna work tonight. I’m feeling good.

************************************************””””””””””””**

Adam: You’re gonna make me pull it out of you bit by bit. Okay.

[Glass thuds] Well, the latest threat to the Newmans was Ashland Locke.

Victor: Well, that S.O.B. Is thankfully no longer with us.

Adam: Mm, that eliminated some of the danger, but his death had its own turmoil. So, what changed?

Victor: All conversations about Ashland Locke are past tense, okay? Guy’s dead as a doornail. And any investigations into the circumstances of his death are now closed.

Adam: What?

Victor: Yeah. They’re closed. Chance was here earlier. He said he was no longer going to investigate the circumstances of Ashland Locke’s death, so Victoria can now pick up the pieces of her life. So can we all.

Diane: Why do you suppose Harrison sleeps like that?

Jack: All splayed out like he’s in the middle of a jumping jack? I don’t know, maybe to keep cool in the August heat?

Diane: That could be it. Whatever the reason, it’s adorable. It’s like he jumped into bed in that position and then just fell immediately asleep.

[Sighing] Ah. Thank you for letting me peek in on him.

Jack: Anytime.

Diane: You know, this grandparenting thing is never going to get old, is it?

Jack: I highly doubt it. All this joy he brings us seems pretty limitless.

Billy: What is going on here? Is this a therapy session I didn’t know I was having.

Chelsea: [Chuckles] I’m sorry if I’m overstepping. I don’t know what our boundaries are yet. I figure, since we’re working together, everything’s fair game.

Billy: Is that so?

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. It would be great fodder for an episode.

Billy: Okay. Look, uh, I’m not upset that you’re asking me about Victoria. I’m really not. I was just a little bit surprised. But I think you’re right. The more open and honest we are, the more authentic the podcast is.

Transcript provided by Suzanne

Victoria: I’ve got a lot of ground to cover on this video conference.

Nikki: You know, I’d feel more comfortable about this if i knew what your agenda was, aside from a show of strength and leadership.

Victoria: I intend to explain to the department heads that all of the acquisitions that we’ve acquired over the past few months will allow us to eliminate redundancies. And with this increase in capital, newman enterprises will be bigger and more powerful than ever.

Nikki: The question is, what do you intend to do with all that power?

Victoria: We’re gonna grow. I already have my eye on several acquisitions.

Nikki: Several?

Victoria: Yes. 5, maybe 10. This is the time to strike, mom.

Nikki: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: Mom, relax. I’m talking about smaller, fold-in acquisitions, not — not the newman-locke merger.

Nikki: I see the sense of that. I-it’s just the timing I’m concerned about. It was only last night that we learned that chance closed the investigation. You haven’t had time to process that. I know you said you don’t want to sit around wallowing in despair, but it seems like you’re going in the opposite direction at 100 miles per hour.

Victoria: The best way for me to recover is for the company to recover. Ashland was able to blow us off course for a bit, and we lost opportunities because we weren’t focused. That ends today, and I want the entire leadership team to know that we are back on track.

[ Knock on door ]

Sally: Just the man I wanted to see.

Nick: Me? Why?

Sally: Well, I just got victoria’s e-mail about the video call with the division heads. Is that the news that you said might be coming?

Nick: Actually, uh, that is why I came to see you. That is no longer a concern.

Sally: The investigation into ashland’s death — it’s not a worry anymore?

Nick: They closed the case. The final police report will conclude it was a terrible accident. So it’s over.

Victor: I just want to commend you, chance, for ending the investigation into ashland locke’s death.

Chance: There’s no need for that. I did what I did because I saw no point of putting victoria through any more emotional trauma.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Chance: She’s been through enough. And I honestly believe nick acted in self-defense.

Victor: I agree with you.

Chance: I hope so because i do not want you to think for a second that I condone what you did — concealment of death, filing false police reports, obstruction of justice. Victor, these are crimes… crimes that should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law. But we did have some extenuating circumstances, didn’t we?

Victor: We certainly did, yeah. You’re a good cop, chance.

Chance: I agree that justice was served. But I need you to know that you cannot operate on the outside of the law with impunity. And the next time you cross the line, I will be there and I will make sure you are held accountable.

Chelsea: It’s not like that at all, chloe. I’m not falling for billy. Please give me more credit than that.

Chloe: [ Scoffs ] Well, i know what I saw.

Chelsea: No, you know what you think you saw. And you’re overreacting, just like you did with me and rey.

Chloe: Are you denying there was something between you and rey?

Chelsea: Come on. Chloe, every time you see me talking to a man, you’re like, “oh, no, there she goes again!”

Chloe: Oh, come on, chelsea. This is me you’re talking to. And I know the signs. I saw you interacting with rey, and I know how hard you took his death. And it wasn’t just because he was kind to you and connor. There was more to it.

Chelsea: We were just friends. That’s it. And the same is true with billy. Maybe you can’t have male friends without it turning into something more, but I can.

Chloe: [ Scoffs ]

Adam: You understand what I’m saying, don’t you?

Kevin: It’s not that difficult to comprehend.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You seem awfully calm.

Kevin: Even if there was a cover-up, I wouldn’t be responsible. I’m not a cop.

Adam: Well, if you think victor is gonna protect you with his son-in-law, that may be your biggest error in judgment yet, okay? You are the perfect fall guy, kevin. You are dumb and trusting, with a long history of shady behavior.

Kevin: Okay. I get it now. This isn’t about me. It’s about you and victor. You were dumb and trusting enough to think he would support you at newman. He turned his back on you, you’re out on your butt, and you want me to help you get payback.

[ Inhales sharply ] Yeah, that’s not gonna happen, so go find someone else to harass. Life… doesn’t stop for diabetes.

Victor: Well, chance, i appreciate your concern. But I think you should have been issuing those warnings to ashland locke while he was alive. That would have been more appropriate.

Chance: Victor, we did arrest him when he violated his restraining order. Unfortunately, that did not change his behavior.

Victor: He flouted the law many times over. As far as I’m concerned, whatever happened to that son of a bitch, he deserved. Sit down.

Chance: Look, I understand you think everything worked out the way it should have, but the end does not justify the means.

Victor: I have a very clear conscience.

Chance: That’s what bothers me. You don’t think you did anything wrong here.

Victor: I protected my family. And I’d do it again. Now, having said that, i appreciate the conflict that you feel right now. You feel a conflict between your duties as a cop, as a representative of the law, and your loyalty to your family. I promise you right now, I will not cause that kind of conflict again, okay?

Chance: I’m not worried about you, victor. I am worried about the rest of our family. Abby, nick, victoria, nikki, even adam. Everyone adores you. They would be crushed, absolutely crushed if you were arrested in jail.

Victor: I’ll take care of my family. And for your information, I’ve been in jail before.

Chance: I know.

Victor: Okay.

Chance: And abby told me how tough it was for everyone.

Victor: Mm.

Chance: And now you have more grandkids. They love you, victor. They look up to you. I look up to you. So if you’re not gonna be concerned about yourself, i would advise you to think about them.

Victor: I think about them all the time, chance.

Chance: All I’m saying, victor, is that I will not cover for you ever again.

Victor: Alright, chance. You have a nice day. I have things to do. If you don’t mind, show yourself out.

Sally: Wow. Well, your family must be relieved not to have your private lives splashed all over the internet.

Nick: Yeah, we’re all relieved we can move on from this.

Sally: Personally, I’m just glad I don’t have to navigate the moral minefield, trying to determine what we owe the public as a news organization and what’s best to keep quiet for the good of our parent corporation — ’cause it was giving me heart palpitations.

Nick: For some of us, it was a lot more than that.

Sally: I’m sorry. I won’t ask what changed since the last time we spoke about the situation, but I know that you were worried about the impending media firestorm.

Nick: I’m glad I was wrong about that. I really appreciate your discretion and understanding during the whole ordeal. It was really appreciated.

Sally: I’m glad I could be of service.

Nick: Someone with fewer scruples could have used this as an opportunity to exploit.

Sally: I know someone like that.

[ Sighs ] I probably owe you a warning.

Nick: About what?

Sally: Adam.

Adam: I really hope that you’ve saved all your civil servant pennies, kevin, because you’re gonna need a good, expensive lawyer.

Kevin: That’s never been a problem for me.

Adam: But your brother and your savior works for victor now. See, that’s a conflict of interest for michael. And like I told you, he can’t come to your rescue this time, kevin.

Kevin: This is not working.

Adam: What’s that?

Kevin: You’re trying to get me so worried that I abandon my common sense and say, “you know what? I will help adam in his never-ending battle against his family.” But I’m not concerned. You know why? Because there will be no blowback because there was no cover-up. Chance went by the book.

Adam: Mnh, you don’t know that.

Kevin: I do know that because he always does. It’s his thing. The same way your thing is to come up with some convoluted plan to irritate everybody, accomplish nothing. There is no dirt to dig up. Let it go.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Hey. It’s me. Yeah, it’s been a minute. But, uh, I’m actually not calling to catch up. I, uh — I need a job done. No matter who you are,

Nick: What is adam up to?

Sally: [ Sighs ] He thinks that there is more to the story of what happened that night. He thinks that there is something shady surrounding ashland’s death.

Nick: So, he’s suspicious about the accident.

Sally: And chance’s investigation. He has approached me more than once fishing for information. He thinks I have some inside knowledge.

Nick: And how’d you respond?

Sally: I told him I didn’t know anything. ‘Cause that’s the truth.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Well, thank you for that.

Sally: I didn’t do it to protect you or your family. I — I was just furious that he played on my past feelings for him. He tried to manipulate me to get what he wanted. It was disgusting. And not only that — he tried to make me complicit in whatever move he’s planning against victor.

Nick: I’m very sorry for what adam has put you through. I’m not surprised, though. Anybody who gets involved with him eventually gets a very rude awakening.

Sally: Yeah, well, thank god I have chloe constantly reminding me of adam’s past failings.

Nick: Ah, yes, chloe. I’m sure she has some very colorful things to say about adam.

Sally: Mm-hmm. Yes, she does.

Nick: Well, good for you for listening to her. Other friends of hers haven’T.

Sally: Well, I don’t really have a choice. She won’t shut up about him.

[ Both laugh ] Anyway, I just wanted to make you aware that adam has been digging around, and if he’s coming to me for information, he’s probably going to other people, too.

Nick: Like chance.

Sally: Yes. And abby. And anyone who can help him, whether they know it or not.

Nick: Well, thank you for that information. I got to get to my office for the video conference.

Sally: You’re gonna be late. I have it all set up here. You should stay.

Chloe: I didn’t mean to offend you. I promise. I was just a little worried when I saw you talking to billy. I was just trying to be a good friend.

Chelsea: Would a good friend accuse me of trying to break up rey’s marriage?

Chloe: I wasn’t accusing you of anything. I was only saying that I could tell that you had strong feelings for rey. I didn’t say that you were acting on them or would have.

Chelsea: But it’s kind of what you were implying, based on a simple conversation I was having with billy. You’re reading into all sorts of things that just aren’t there.

Chloe: Okay, I feel like we need to take a step back. I wasn’t judging you. I promise. I just saw that there was a spark between you and rey. And maybe it was my imagination, but he was a wonderful guy. And he was supportive and forgiving. And, you know, let’s be honest. He was super hot. I mean, interrogate me all night long, detective. Am I right?

[ Both laugh ] He was your knight in shining armor, and he made it possible for you to get out of town and visit your mom. So it’s only natural that you would develop feelings for him, and especially after you spent all that time with him in minnesota. You were on the rebound. You were. And finally, the evil one was out of your life. And you were looking around. And now with rey gone, I just — I think you’re probably just a little lonely.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Rebound? Lonely? Desperate? Needy? It’s a constant refrain from you. Are you ever gonna see me differently?

Victoria: Hello. I wish that we could do this in person. And, um, we will. I promise.

[ Chuckles ] But for now, I would just like to thank you all for being here today. I’d like to give a quick shout-out to our new coo, my brother, nicholas newman. Nick, is there anything that you’d like to say to the assembled division heads?

Nick: Thank you, victoria. Hello, everyone. I’m very happy to be back in the fold at newman enterprises. I have met with most of you individually. Those of you who I haven’t, I’m sure I’ll meet up with you in the next couple of weeks. Just want you to know I’m very excited to be working with each and every one of you. I believe victoria has assembled a dream team, the best of the best, and I’m fired up to be a part of it.

Victoria: I am in 100% agreement with nicholas. This is an amazing group of people, especially at this moment when we are primed to take advantage of this incredible opportunity and to grow this company at an unprecedented rate. Over the past few months, we have faced some challenges — completing the merger and other unexpected obstacles. But we are strong and resilient and able to face anything that comes our way. And after everything that we have been through, we are primed and we are ready to reap the rewards of our hard work. So, let’s get to it. Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Victoria: Excellent. I love that suggestion, belinda. I’m gonna put you in touch with sally spectra. She’s the head of newman media. And the two of you can coordinate. Sally, what do you think?

Sally: I love it. Some synergy between the media division and strategic development. And the timing is crucial. I think if we can publish some stories about our properties before they’re fully developed, we can build a buzz for them and create some credibility for us as a source for breaking news.

Victoria: Great. So, the two of you will get together and hammer out the details. And, nick, you will follow up on updating the systems for the distribution centers on the west coast?

Nick: Yeah, just like we discussed. I’ll be digging into that this afternoon.

Victoria: Well, this has been a very productive call, and i appreciated hearing from each and every one of you. Great ideas. Please keep them coming. And I think that our decisions today will be the foundation for the monumental moves we’ll make going forward. So, thank you all so much for your time and for your commitment, and we’ll do this again soon. Have a good week.

[ Laptop closes ] Well, what do you think?

Nikki: You were right about this video conference. You were totally in your element. You were born for this.

Sally: Victoria was good. She’s tough, man. I mean, she put ashland and all that other stuff behind her. She was so poised and polished.

Nick: That is vick. She’s a lot like dad in that regard. You know, her kids will always be her priority, but when it comes to business, she is laser-focused.

Sally: You know, I like to think of myself as a survivor, but I just don’t know if I could soldier on like that after breaking up with a lying bastard of a husband and then him suddenly dying.

Nick: Yeah, she’s extremely resilient. It’s not always good the way she pushes herself. I mean, my mom has to stay on her all the time about looking after herself.

Sally: I feel bad buying into adam’s characterization of her. I mean, he views her as this pampered, spoiled princess. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but when I was with him, it made sense.

Nick: Yeah. Adam has this unique way of getting people to share his distorted view of the world.

Sally: Well, after that call, it was clear to me that victoria is not a princess. She is a warrior, a leader. Listening to her made me inspired to make newman media a success.

Nick: And I have no doubts that you will. I’m really glad you’re on our team, sally. And I’m sure you have a lot of work to do, so I’m gonna let you get back to it. Good job. I’ll see you around.

Sally: You too.

[ Sighs ]

Chloe: Everything you’re saying is out of context. I’m telling you this out of concern. I’m not judging.

Chelsea: So now you’re back to babysitting me?

Chloe: It’s not like that, chelsea.

Chelsea: Well, that’s what it feels like. I’m capable of making my own decisions. I’ve been thinking very clearly lately, so you don’t need to warn me about billy. He’s my friend and a colleague.

Chloe: And an ex.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: And johnny’s father. It is very easy for the lines to get blurred.

Chelsea: Nothing’s blurry, chloe.

Chloe: Maybe not yet, but trust me — I know because billy turns on that abbott charm, and you lose perspective. You start to think everything means a little bit more than it does.

Chelsea: That’s what happened with you, not me.

Chloe: You have to be vigilant about this.

Chelsea: Oh, god.

Chloe: Billy is — is like a six-foot-tall bucket of charm. He can make you feel special without even trying.

Chelsea: How desperate do you think I am?

Chloe: It’s not about being desperate or needy. It’s about being vulnerable.

Chelsea: Okay, I hones– I can’t believe you’re saying these things to me. I really can’T.

Chloe: Everybody needs someone in their life who has the guts to say something when stuff starts getting out of hand and you need a sane, objective point of view to keep you from jumping off the edge.

Chelsea: I’m pretty sure you just called me crazy.

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: Chloe, yeah, I have a history of losing touch with reality, but I hate to break it to you — so do you. And I don’t throw it in your face every other day.

Chloe: That’s not what I’m doing.

Chelsea: Just let me live my life, please! (Cat 1) friskies world!

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Chloe: I’m sorry. It’s not at all what I meant, so let’s just change the subject.

Chelsea: No.

Chloe: How’s connor?

Chelsea: Mnh-mnh. We’re not done talking about this.

Chloe: I clearly hit a nerve.

Chelsea: No, it’s just, i need you to recognize I’m an adult and I am in control of my emotions and affections. I’m not going off the rails, and I don’t need a babysitter.

Chloe: Okay.

Chelsea: I’m sorry. I don’t mean to jump down your throat. It’s just, I don’t appreciate what you’re insinuating.

Chloe: It’s not the first time my imagination’s run wild.

Chelsea: It’s okay. I just, um — you know what? I-I have to go.

Chloe: No. No, please stay. Don’t waste a perfectly good drink. I actually need to go. And, um, maybe we can talk later when we’ve both cooled off.

Chelsea: Yeah, I think that’s a good idea.

Chloe: Okay. Bye.

Chelsea: Bye.

Adam: That looked intense. When I left you two earlier, it seemed like you were on your way back to becoming bffs.

Chelsea: Well, good friends sometimes get in arguments. Not that you would know anything about that.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Wow. Right out of the gate, just taking a shot at me for not having any friends. Someone is defensive about something.

Chelsea: So, how long were you spying on us?

Adam: I was not eavesdropping.

Chelsea: No? So, you must have a lot of time on your hands these days since you don’t have a job. You can just listen in on other people’s conversations?

Adam: Something like that, yeah. It’s given me some time to catch up on my podcasts. I actually caught the one of you and billy the other day. Provocative. I mean, billy was annoying as ever, but you made up for it. I love the way that you poked holes in his overinflated ego.

Chelsea: I have a lot of experience dealing with arrogant men.

Adam: It was highly entertaining.

Chelsea: Thanks. I appreciate that. But billy has actually decided that the podcast is a distraction from his actual job.

Adam: Billy has an actual job?

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: I thought, uh, lily was just keeping him on the payroll for appearances’ sake and to keep his mother happy.

Chelsea: Well, regardless, he doesn’t have time for the podcast anymore, so… that’s the end of that.

Nick: Hey. Mom said you were here. I noticed you did your video conference from home this morning. You avoiding the office?

Victoria: Maybe a little.

Nick: Why?

Victoria: I’m just waiting for the murmurs about ashland to quiet down. You know, even when people don’t ask, I know they’re curious about how I’m handling his death, and I’m just not interested in having that conversation.

Nick: I get it. You certainly gave the department heads a lot to talk about with all your announcements at the meeting.

Victoria: How do you think it went?

Nick: If sally is any indication, they’re ready to follow you into battle.

Victoria: Good.

Nick: I didn’t know how serious you were about all the acquisitions, though. I thought maybe you were just trying to grab everyone’s attention.

Victoria: Well, I will show you how serious I am.

Nick: What’s this?

Victoria: It’s a list of all of the companies that I want to acquire.

Nick: All of them?

Victoria: Yeah. Why not? I mean, I think we should put some feelers out for the ones at the top of the list. You do see the value in bringing them, right?

Nick: Yeah. They’re all profit generators. They’ll generate earnings from day one.

Victoria: Mm-hmm. So we should see where the negotiating starting point is for each one of them.

[ Both laugh ]

Nick: You aren’t messing around, vick.

Victoria: Well, do you disagree with my plan?

Nick: [ Chuckles ] I mean, i think we’re biting off more than we can chew. I think we need to focus and prioritize on folding the locke communication groups into newman.

Victoria: Well, I have taken that into consideration. But if we wait for the perfect time, we might miss out on some golden opportunities. Now is the time to be bold.

Nikki: Ah.

Victor: Hi, baby.

Nikki: Hi.

Victor: I didn’t know you’d be home so soon. How is your day going?

Nikki: Well, victoria held a video conference with all of the department heads. She put to rest any concerns they may have had about her ability to lead the company. She mapped out a 1-year, 5-year, 10-year plan —

Victor: I know. I was on the call.

Nikki: Oh. You didn’t have your camera on.

Victor: No, because I didn’t want to detract from her moment in the sun.

Nikki: So, what did you think? Do you approve of the direction she’s taking the company? Woman tc: My a1c stayed here, it needed to be here.

Victoria: Are you worried that we’re taking on too much debt with all of these maneuvers?

Nick: That’s a lot to finance.

Victoria: Well, not as much as you might think. You know, I’ve worked out the math based on the appropriate price ranges for these companies. And it’s not like we’ll be leveraging that much because we will be eliminating redundancies and unprofitable divisions. And that’s how we’re gonna afford a good percentage of these new acquisitions.

Nick: It’s a smart way to do it — if we do it at all.

Victoria: You still don’t seem convinced.

Nick: I just don’t think there’s anything wrong with slowing down, getting a feel for the landscape, and being methodical.

Victoria: Well, I’ll show you the numbers and then you’ll see that we can’t afford not to do this.

Nick: Well, I can’t help but feel like these moves are about more than that.

Victoria: You know what? You’re right. There is something else that is making me feel extremely confident in my position. You haven’t guessed what that is yet.

Nick: No. Tell me.

Victoria: It’s you, nick.

Victor: I think victoria was wonderful. I couldn’t have been happier with what she said.

Nikki: Good. I’m glad.

Victor: You know, considering what she went through with ashland locke, I was afraid that her self-confidence would be shattered. Not a sign of it. She has fully recovered.

Nikki: These were aggressive moves, much like what you might make.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nikki: And I think that victoria’s trying to prove that ashland couldn’t defeat her. I mean, no one can.

Victor: Nothing wrong with that.

Nikki: Well, of course you would say that. She’s taking a page out of your playbook.

Victor: And I would have done exactly the same thing had i been in her shoes. I couldn’t be prouder.

Adam: Well, I’m sorry that billy is pulling the plug on this podcast, for your sake. It seems like you were really enjoying yourself.

Chelsea: I was.

Adam: Maybe you should start your own podcast.

Chelsea: Well, actually, billy said chancellor-winters offered to continue producing it and I could go solo.

Adam: That’s even better. Someone’s putting up the cash, and — and you won’t have to deal with billy anymore.

Chelsea: It wouldn’t be the same. The whole reason it was a success was because of billy and me and our back-and-forth.

Adam: I don’t know, chelsea. I think you’re selling yourself short.

Chelsea: Thanks. Well, no one wants to listen to me drone on and on for an hour by myself. I mean, even I wouldn’t want to listen to that.

Adam: Well, that’s saying something because I know how much you love the sound of your own voice.

Chelsea: [ Laughs ] Very funny. Very funny.

Adam: Come on. This is an easily solvable problem. Just find a new co-host. Bring on weekly guests. Revamp the whole thing. New format. Make it your own.

Chelsea: It’s not a bad idea. I don’t know. The thing is, I feel like i started to get my groove. I know that sounds stupid.

Adam: Not at all.

Chelsea: This podcast was giving me direction. I felt so inspired, and it was resonating with people.

[ Sighs ] It made me feel less invisible.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Um…yeah, I-I understand what you’re saying, but I — I just really hope that you’re not talking like this in front of connor.

Chelsea: What? Why would you say that?

Adam: Because I don’t want him to be affected by what you’re dealing with, chelsea.

Chelsea: What are you talking about? That’s your attitude? You think I’m an unfit mother if I don’t act cheery all the time?

Adam: No, no, no, th– that’s not what I meant.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Connor’s a sensitive kid. He picks up on our emotions, okay? He knows when things aren’t going right with us. I try not to talk to him about family issues for the same reason — I don’t want him to worry about me.

Chelsea: I got it. Put on my game face. Fair enough.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Adam: I have to go.

Chelsea: Where are you running off to? You’re don’t have a job anymore.

Adam: I’ll see you later, okay?

Chelsea: Bye.

[ Sighs heavily ] Girls trip.

Victoria: You know, the reason that I am confident that we can accomplish all of these things is because I know that i have you on my side. I have — I have total faith in you that you’re always gonna have my back. After what happened that night, I — I mean, I just know you’re always gonna be there for me. If you hadn’t shown up, I might not have survived, nicholas.

Nick: Vick, come on. I don’t like thinking that way.

Victoria: But it’s true. You saved me.

[ Sighs ] If you hadn’t been there, i don’t know what would have happened, and I just want you to know that you are the best brother and best colleague that I could ever ask for.

Nick: You don’t have to say that.

Victoria: But it’s true, and I don’t say it enough. You’re just the absolute best, and I’m — I’m really looking forward to everything that we’re gonna do together at newman. And I have this idea that there’s absolutely nothing we can’t accomplish. And I intend to put that theory to the test.

Victor: Watching our daughter run that meeting, I was impressed. Really. I mean, nicholas did his end, and you chimed in whenever necessary. The whole thing was like watching a well-oiled machine, you know? So, uh… I think that victoria managed to unify the newman family.

Nikki: Well, you sound just as proud of that as you are of her business agenda.

Victor: Even more so.

Nikki: Well, I’m thrilled working with nicholas and victoria. It gives me the opportunity to see them every day, and then i can watch them flourish on their own.

[ Sighs ] Thank goodness ashland was not able to drive a wedge between all of us like he obviously wanted to. Our family is stronger than ever.

Victor: Yeah. Except for adam.

Nikki: Well, I’m sorry, for your sake, that he and victoria never reconciled.

Victor: That has been a problem for many years now. I’m trying hard to solve it, you know? Well, you know how hard I tried to integrate him into the family. Man.

[ Glass scrapes ]

[ Exhales heavily ] He has never forgiven me for being raised without a father on that farm in kansas. Never has. It’s not my fault. I wanted to raise him here in this time, but his mother didn’t want any part of that. I’m still paying for that. Never felt a part of this family. It saddens me. It really does. But let’s celebrate our daughter. She did a wonderful job, and so did all of you. Cheers, my love.

[ Glasses clink ]

Nikki: Cheers.

[ Glass thuds ] Ahh. We’re back. The newmans are back.

Chloe: Oh, hey! This is a nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting to see you here.

Kevin: Yes, I will come down and file a report, but you need to tell the chief and detective chancellor what happened. This is of the utmost importance. No, no, I’m not overstating it. This is official police business.

[ Sighs ] Okay, I went to the library to return some books — what? No. No. Miles has some picture books that don’t fit in the return slot outside, so I had to go inside. I was in there for 90 seconds, 2 minutes, tops, came back out, and my car had been broken into.

Chloe: What?

Kevin: Yes, I’m getting to the part that is official police business. My messenger bag — that was a gift from my beautiful partner — was taken, and inside that messenger bag [Sighs] Was my gcpd laptop.

[ Door handle thuds ]

Adam: Did you get it?

Lucas: Yep.

Adam: Get in here, lucas. Did anybody see you?

Lucas: No. But you never told me he worked for the police. You know that increases my risk. It’s gonna cost you a bit more.

Adam: Fine.

Lucas: Oh, that is a nice bag. I want it.

Adam: Keep it.

Lucas: Alright.

Adam: I just want this.

Billy: There is nothing — and I mean this — nothing that you can’t conquer.

Victoria: Thank you.

Billy: I mean it, vick. You’re so impressive. You’re an amazing woman. And I’m — I’m just so proud of you.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: And to be honest, I’m a tiny bit jealous.

[ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You mentioned earlier at the club that, uh — that you felt a bit at sea lately.

Billy: Yeah.

Victoria: What is that about?

Billy: Just thinking about making some changes.

Victoria: Care to share?

Billy: Nope, not tonight. Because tonight is all about you and your fresh start.

[ Knock on door ]

Nikki: Good morning, darling.

Victoria: Morning, mama.

Nikki: Mwah!

Victoria: Come in.

Nikki: Thank you.

[ Door closes ] Alright, now, first things first. Were you able to sleep last night?

Victoria: My goodness, yes, like a log. It was glorious.

Nikki: I’m so glad. Well, I have breakfast and tea. I didn’t know if you would be up to it, but I thought maybe we could go outside in the garden. It’s a lovely day.

Victoria: Well, you know, here is fine.

Nikki: Okay.

Victoria: Thank you.

Nikki: Uh-huh. I wasn’t sure if maybe you had come home too soon.

Victoria: No. Actually, it was exactly what i needed, stepping back into my old life. No. Scratch that. Stepping forward into my new life. And we should start planning right here, right now.

Nikki: For what?

Victoria: Life after ashland.

Victor: Hey, son.

Nick: Hey.

Victor: Just got your text saying you wanted to meet. I’m having some breakfast. Would you care to join me?

Nick: I’m not hungry. Thanks.

Victor: How do you feel?

Nick: I’m alright. How are you?

Victor: I have never been better.

Nick: Good.

Victor: Mm.

Nick: Alright, so, here’s the deal. Just because chance has decided to shut down his investigation of looking into ashland’s death, it doesn’t mean it’s over for me.

Victor: Mm-hmm. Is that why you rushed out of here last night?

Nick: Look, I’m just trying to work through it, you know, dad. A man died because of my actions.

Victor: How do you feel now?

Kevin: Chance! I tried calling. I tried e-mailing. I figured there had to be a good reason you went radio silent. So, what’s the word? Where are we at with the locke investigation?

Chance: That’s what I wanted to talk to you about.

Kevin: Ah, away from the prying eyes of everybody at the station. Great idea. So, how did the D.A. React when you presented all of our evidence, how the body was moved, how the accident was staged? I mean, you all but handed them a guilty verdict on a silver platter.

Chance: I didn’t do it.

Kevin: What? You didn’t take the evidence to the D.A.? After all the hours we spent building the case?

Chance: I came to the conclusion that there was no probable cause to believe a crime was committed.

Kevin: No probable cause? With all of the evidence we uncovered? Is this coming from paul? Because we need to explain to him that —

Chance: It was my decision, kevin.

Lily: Yeah. I just have a lot to catch up on since I got back from my trip.

Billy: Okay. Can you spare a few minutes for a morning chat over coffee?

Lily: Uh, it depends. Is it work-related?

Billy: I would like to pick up our conversation that we were having earlier about me splitting my time between my corporate responsibilities and the podcast and where i ultimately want to be.

Chelsea: Enjoying your new life of leisure?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. You know, no work, no responsibilities. It’s pretty great.

Chelsea: Why are you reading the newman media website? Trying to stay abreast on how things are faring under the new ceo?

Adam: Checking updates on the, uh, demise of ashland locke.

Chelsea: What’s left to be written? Bad guy loses control of his car, ends up at the bottom of a ravine.

Adam: Assuming that’s all there was to it.

Chelsea: Well, your family must be thrilled to be done with ashland, have all of this behind them.

Adam: That is certainly their hope.

Nick: I was angry and frustrated because you once again decided you needed to control the situation. You made a unilateral decision without any regard whatsoever to the people who were directly involved.

Victor: Namely, you.

Nick: Yeah. Me. I was going through hell, dad. You know, I thought I killed a man. Then I had to grapple with this idea that maybe he got up and walked away on his own and that my hands were clean. Then later, I just learn that you covered up everything I did and I was right from the beginning.

Victor: Son, ashland locke caused his own death, okay?

Nick: [ Sighs ] I guess if you, uh, look at it in, like, the big picture, yes, you could say that. But because of what you did, dad, I was forced to lie to the police. Now, that might be second nature for other people, but it is not me, dad. That is not who I am. So I needed to struggle with this idea of doing what was best for victoria and her children, for my kids, for you and mom, or doing what was the right thing and what was right for me.

Victor: Well, you had to be a good father, good son, and a brave brother.

Nick: Well, now that I’ve had some time and distance from the situation… I understand you were just trying to be a good father, too.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] I appreciate you saying that, son. Everything I did was for you and victoria.

Nick: I know. You and your security team — you know, you had no idea what went on in that house after i got there. It all happened so fast. I barely had time to think. But you — you acted on instinct. At your core, you are predictably…

[Chuckles] Protective. And you will do anything to save your children.

Victor: And that’ll never change, son.

Nick: Well, vick came to that realization faster than I did. She really is a lot more like you than any of us could ever be.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ]

Chelsea: Are you saying there’s something else about ashland’s death that’s being kept under wraps?

Adam: Oh, hell if I know. I learned about what’s going on with my family the same way all the other lowly non-newmans do. I read about it.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Chloe: Oh. Hi, guys.

Chelsea: Hi.

Adam: Chloe. I would say it’s a pleasure, but, um…

Chloe: Ah. Yeah. Well, don’t let me interrupt.

Adam: No, no, no, you’re not. I, uh — I really hope the two of you can get back to being a dynamic duo again.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Mm. Nice outfit.

Chloe: Oh, thanks. It’s one of yours.

Chelsea: I know, but it never would have gone into production if it wasn’t for you.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Um, I — I heard your latest podcast episode.

Chelsea: Yeah?

Chloe: Yeah, you really put it all out there, don’t you?

Chelsea: It’s cathartic.

Chloe: It’s cheaper than therapy.

Chelsea: True. True. And it’s fun.

Chloe: Yeah, sounds like it.

Chelsea: It is, and I’m — I’m just using a different part of my brain, you know? I get to just go on instinct.

Chloe: Without the constant criticism.

Chelsea: Oh, no, actually. I get it from both sides now. Our subscribers, our new listeners. But I get to give it back, too, to billy. He’s the best. You know, nothing’s off limits. He’s constantly entertaining. You know, doing a podcast, you kind of feel like you’re walking on a tightrope. You could fall at any minute. But with billy, I feel safe ’cause when I start to lose my footing and feel like I’m gonna fall, he’ll fall to take the heat off me, if that makes any sense.

[ Both laugh ]

Chloe: Well, I’m really happy for you. I really am.

Chelsea: Well, thanks. You know, I’m just so used to editing myself. I would always hold back to make sure I would say what’s acceptable.

Chloe: Well, now you can finally let loose.

Chelsea: Exactly. And it was kind of cool how it happened, you know? I was just blatantly honest with billy about how painfully depressing his podcast was, and instead of getting defensive, he asked me to help him make it better. And the other stuff — it just all happened organically, so…

Chloe: I’m sorry that you could let loose with billy in a way that you couldn’t with me. I mean, I’m kind of low-key jealous, but I’m really happy that you found a safe place to land. I really am. And I can see it’s exactly what you needed.

Billy: I’ve done a lot of thinking about the tug-of-war between my responsibility as your right hand and the podcasts. And I think I figured out what i want to be when I grow up.

Lily: Okay.

Billy: Look, I think you know that things have been a little sideways for me, and I feel like I realized that and I put myself in that recording studio in order to avoid dealing with that. And that is not fair to you, and it is not fair to this company.

Lily: Yeah. Well, thank you for saying that. I’m not really sure where this is leading.

Billy: I’m making a course correction, and I have found a replacement.

Lily: A replacement? I mean, billy, this is really fast. I think you should have talked to me about it first.

Billy: A replacement as host of “the grinning soul,” someone that I think is gonna be great, someone with a skewed view of the world, much like me, that throws caution into wind.

Lily: Okay, so, you’re staying on as coo?

Billy: Fully committed. I’m here. I’m walking away from my other responsibilities at the podcast so I can focus on you and chancellor-winters. So, we can turn the recording studio into a meditation room or a place for you to do yoga, whatever you need. What do you think?

Lily: I-I mean [Sighs] Is this what you want? Or are you just saying it ’cause you think it’s what I want to hear?

If you have type 2 diabetes

or high blood pressure…

Nikki: Well, it’s nice to finally have some closure on the whole ashland ordeal. He did meet with a rather violent untimely death, didn’t he?

Victoria: That was all ashland’s doing. The real tragedy is what nicholas is going through. You know, he didn’t ask to be put in this position. I thank god every morning when i wake up for putting him there, for saving me.

Nikki: Oh, well, so do I. But don’t you think you should take some time to deal with how low ashland spiraled? He wanted to do you harm.

Victoria: Mom, I love you, and I think I know where this is coming from, but you have to understand something. I dealt with the fallout from ashland’s lies for a very long time. It felt like a weight on me. It colored every decision that i made.

Nikki: I know.

Victoria: And now that he’s gone, I’m not gonna wallow in — in how everything went so wrong.

Nikki: Well, I don’t think that you should. I’m just saying maybe you should dig down to some deeper emotions.

Victoria: I have. I have. I’ve — I’ve mourned ashland in my own way. And I’ve dug very deep. And what I realized, mom, is that I feel — I feel free. I mean, at least I’m starting to.

Nikki: I think that’s wonderful.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] You know what? Last night, I even had a drink with billy, of all people.

Nikki: Oh, well… don’t, uh — don’t go overboard there.

Victoria: [ Laughs ] No. It was — it was nice. We talked about the future. We toasted to it. It felt good thinking about what’s to come. And I’m ready to start plotting that course.

Nikki: Now?

Victoria: Why not? There’s no time like the present. Let’s be bold, mom.

Nikki: What did you have in mind?

Nick: Do you have any idea how lucky you are that chance decided not to continue with this investigation? You could have gone to prison for this cover-up.

Victor: Well, let me just say, I’m very grateful to my son-in-law.

Nick: I was surprised and relieved that he decided to close the case.

Victor: And to be frank with you, I was surprised at the sloppiness of my team. They left evidence behind.

Nick: Can I assume you relieved them of their duties?

Victor: What do you think?

Nick: The bottom line is, you got lucky this time. When are you gonna stop tempting fate, dad? What if chance had followed this thing to the end and acted on the evidence?

Victor: Then I would have handled it, son.

Nick: Yeah. That’s what worries me, too.

Kevin: Walk me through this, please, because I really want to understand how you went from single-minded determination to get to the truth of what happened that night to bygones.

Chance: There was a lot that went into my decision.

Kevin: Like the ring that fell out of ashland’s pocket, the recovered video evidence that shows a guy tossing a cigarette and getting into ashland’s car, someone who clearly was not ashland and was very eager to cover up his tracks. Oh, oh, and the fact that both nick and victoria thought that ashland was dead because they couldn’t find a pulse. All signs pointing to them being right. You had the evidence, more than enough. Convictions have been gotten on less.

Chance: Kevin, kevin, I made the right choice. I mean, it was a tragic accident.

Kevin: Keep telling yourself that. Say it a few hundred more times, and maybe you’ll start to believe it. But I doubt it. And whether or not you pursue this evidence, it exists. And if it comes to light, it’s gonna be really, really bad. It could mean serious blowback for both of us. (Cat 1) friskies world!

Billy: Of course you factor in to my decision. I love you. We live together. We work together. And so, yeah, I mean, I realized that the podcast was taking up too much space in my life, and i promised myself and I promised you that I would be accountable. Everything I said was not gonna happen was actually what was happening.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, it’s a big step.

Billy: I want to be a man of my word. And I told my mother after chanccomm that I would not let her down.

Lily: Right. So, what I’m hearing is that you’re doing this because it’s being demanded of you.

Billy: No. What you’re hearing me say is that I want to be someone with integrity, right? Look, I don’t want to come here and do a half-assed job when everybody else is putting their blood, sweat, and tears into this company. I don’t want to be that guy. That’s my call.

Lily: Billy, are you sure? Honestly. ‘Cause I don’t want you to end up resenting me down the road.

Billy: [ Sighs ] I don’t like the feeling that something was changing between us, okay, and the connection that we share. And I don’t ever want to take advantage of you or this situation. This is where I want to be. This is where I belong.

Chelsea: I don’t mean to go on and on about how wonderful it is working with billy.

Chloe: No. Don’t minimize it. You deserve to be happy.

Chelsea: I really needed this job. You know. I was so deep in my own head, i never thought I’d find my way out.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] So now you’re gonna try to sort out billy’s?

[ Both laugh ]

Chelsea: It is a three-ring circus in there.

Chloe: Yeah. Well, you weren’t having an easy time of it when we were working on the line at fenmore’s, and, you know, I-I get why you had to go on hiatus from designing.

Chelsea: Is that what we’re calling it?

Chloe: [ Laughs ] Hey, you could make a return to fashion any time you want. Everyone loves a good comeback story. But you were having a hard time after rey died. He would be so proud of you now. Almost as proud as your bestie.

Chelsea: Okay, bestie, what about you?

Chloe: What about me?

Chelsea: Is everything okay? I can tell. Something’s off.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Come on. You know me.

Chelsea: I do know you. Which is why, even when things are a little tense between us, I can read you. And I can tell something’s wrong. So, out with it.

Nick: Do you have any idea how big of a gamble you were taking? Chance had the evidence. He could have gone to the D.A. And I know you were starting to worry.

Victor: I wasn’t worried about myself, okay?

Nick: Well, you should have been worried about yourself. This thing could have gone sideways at any point.

Victor: But the point is, it didn’T.

Nick: That’s it? That’s what you’re taking away from this? Dad, when are you gonna stop taking these risks?

Victor: Son, I will never stop protecting and safeguarding my family. You got a problem with that?

[ Footsteps approaching ] Abby.

Abby: Hi. Is this a boys’ brunch, or can anyone join?

Victor: Goodness, no. Come on in. I haven’t seen you for so long.

Abby: Hi, dad.

[ Smooches ]

Victor: How’s your boy?

Abby: He’s good.

Victor: Yeah?

Abby: Um, hey, nick. Is everything okay?

Nick: Yeah. It’s fine.

Victor: You understand that chance closed the case on ashland’s death?

Abby: Yeah. He — he did it to protect you and to make sure that nick and victoria didn’t have to go through more than they already have.

Nick: Well, that couldn’t have been an easy decision for him to make.

Abby: But it was the right one.

Nick: Yeah. Well, I will always be grateful. I got to go. I’ve got a pile of work, uh, to get to.

Victor: Alright, son. Speak with you soon.

Nick: Yeah. Bye, abby.

Abby: Bye, nick.

[ Sighs ] I am so glad that this is over and that nothing bad can happen to you.

Victor: I intend to speak with chance later and thank him.

Abby: I don’t think you should do that.

Chance: Kevin, the conclusion for the investigation is in the police report, if anyone went to the trouble to look for it. And it’s not that simple. Some of the information is redacted. It’s not all available to the public.

Kevin: What are you saying? You think it won’t be found? Victor covered up how ashland died. You know it. I know it. So do the newmans. So do the security guys who botched the job and got id’d on video.

Chance: There is nothing to worry about, okay?

Kevin: [ Scoffs ] The truth has a funny way of coming out, no matter how you try and hide it. I’ll bet victor thought he was in the clear, that there was no way we could track his involvement. Anyone that’s ever tried to get away with anything convinces themselves of that. My mother, my brother — both of them have played loose and fast with the law, and it has come back to bite them. Me. Me! I have made mistakes, too. It’s why I have worked so hard to turn my life around. I made a commitment to chloe and to my kids to be the best person I could be, just like you did with your family.

Chance: Kevin, I did a full investigation, and I put everything in that report. No one is trying to get away with anything.

Kevin: If this case revolved around anyone other than victor, you would be pursuing a conviction with everything you’ve got.

Chance: I didn’t do this for victor. I’m amber, I’ve lost 128 pounds with golo,

“The young and the restless”

will continue. Can you imagine a world where moms and kids agreed

Victoria: Oh, and please make sure that all of the department heads know about the video call.

Nikki: Mm-hmm. Uh, what shall the subject be?

Victoria: Well, my plans for taking newman enterprises into the future.

Nikki: Darling, I love seeing this renewed strength and energy after everything that’s happened. I know what you went through. But our employees don’T. I mean, consider the optics. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, ashland died in a tragic car accident.

And I will acknowledge my late ex-spouse briefly, noting without irony that newman enterprises would not be the company that it is without his — mm, let’s call it dedication to growing our reach and our holdings. And I’m going to put an end to all of the rumors and the speculations, any doubts or questions about the future of our company.

Nikki: Well, you know, even though he stepped down from newman/locke, there are still a lot of employees who are loyal to him.

Victoria: Mother, I’m aware of that, and I will make it clear that they are free to leave, but that no other company will offer them the opportunity that newman enterprises can, starting today, because nothing is in our way now.

Chance: I am not protecting my father-in-law.

Kevin: I never said that. But prepare yourself because that’s what anyone on the outside is gonna think — “there go the newmans again, standing shoulder to shoulder against all foes.” You’re a part of that family. They’re gonna say you’re ignoring the facts.

Chance: The fact is that ashland was a threat that night. He showed up to his ex’s house uninvited, seeking revenge. Now, whichever way you want to look at it, man, his death was unintentional, whether it was caused by a car accident or someone protecting their sister in self-defense. Now, I thought it was best not to drag the family through the ordeal of whatever charges the D.A. Might throw at him, especially because that accidental death, man — that could have been a scandal for the real victim here — victoria.

Kevin: Make no mistake. I fully agree. But that should have been the D.A.’S call, not yours.

Chloe: I’m just dealing with a lot, and some days seem bigger than others.

Chelsea: Are you scared to spill the beans because of the animosity between sally and me? I mean, you’re smart to be cautious. I can’t promise not to throw it in her face if you trash-talk her.

Chloe: [ Sighs ] We do know each other really well, then, don’t we?

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. I don’t know what’s going on with sally, but I do know that you are the smartest, most intuitive, hardest-working person I know, and she’s lucky to have you.

Chloe: Yeah?

Chelsea: Yeah! And if you want me to — I don’t know — come up with the world’s most uncomfortable dress that gets tighter and tighter as the day goes on…

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] You’d do that for me?

Chelsea: In a heartbeat. We still make a great team, even if we’re not working for the same boss. Are you sure you’re okay?

Chloe: Yeah. You know, growing pains, right? And, uh, you know, maybe one day I’ll be in a great position like you’ve landed in.

Billy: Hey.

Chloe: Hi.

Billy: Sorry to interrupt. How you doing? Good to see you both.

Chloe: Good. Good to see you. And, hey, congratulations on the show. You really hit a home run with this one.

Billy: Yeah. No. Thank you for that. I appreciate it. Um, can I steal you for a second, please?

Chloe: Oh, yeah, um, you guys chat about your show. Um, I’ll grab another drink.

Chelsea: Okay.

Billy: See you.

Chloe: Bye.

Chelsea: I’m actually glad I’ve got you here. I have a great idea for a new episode. I don’t know why I didn’t think about it sooner.

Billy: Can we, uh, put that on pause for a minute?

Chelsea: Sure. Is something wrong?

Billy: [ Sighs ] I need to inform you that I — I will be stepping away from the podcast in order to focus on my day job.

Psst psst.

Chelsea: The podcast is over? Just like that?

Billy: Well, it doesn’t have to be. I think you should take over, and chancellor-winters is 100% behind you.

Chelsea: That’s the worst idea you’ve ever had.

Billy: I don’t think so. I think you are engaging. You are talented. You have a very interesting way of seeing the world and a wonderful way of expressing it.

Chelsea: Hold on. So…you’re willing to walk away just like that from something you clearly love?

Billy: I got to make a choice, chelsea. And the podcasts have been a distraction from my commitments, from —

Chelsea: From your real life? Billy, you have never been more real or more alive than when you’re sitting behind that microphone, diving into the real questions, the — the messy and complicated aspects of life that make it so interesting.

Billy: Well, now you get to be that voice.

Chelsea: But it’s not gonna be the same. Or nearly as much fun. Trust me — I got plenty of experience talking to myself when I was locked up. The whole point of me doing this is because I was doing it with someone who really gets me, someone who’s smart and funny and —

Billy: Look, I know. I am a super fun guy to work with. Look, chelsea, it’s not like i didn’t enjoy our time together — because I did. I thought it went really, really well. This whole partnership came out of left field, and it was a very pleasant surprise. But I made a commitment to chancellor-winters, and I need to do this for many reasons.

Chelsea: Okay, let me get this straight. You’re in a rush to get back into a world where you recently admitted you don’t belong? Makes a lot of sense.

Billy: I got to show that I do belong. I got to see this through.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Well, when you realize you’re making a mistake — and you will — I am going to come up with a million ways to say “i told you so.”

Billy: [ Chuckles ] That’s a real comfort.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Billy: I got to go.

Chelsea: Yeah. Got to get back to your real life.

Chloe: Okay. I know we have some work to do on our friendship, but, girl, let me tell you… do not go there.

Victor: You mean I’m not allowed to call my son-in-law and thank him for what he did? What am I missing?

Abby: Dad, he just needs some time to work through this.

Victor: Oh.

Abby: You know how chance is. He has a very strict sense of what’s right and wrong.

Victor: Yeah, but he did the right thing.

Abby: He doesn’t really see it that way.

Victor: Yet.

Abby: You know why this is such a difficult decision for him, right? I mean, chance — he sees everything as black or white, and this is a gray area. He’s not used to operating there.

Victor: Sweetheart, when it comes to protecting one’s family, there’s no gray area. As a father and as a husband, he should understand that now.

Kevin: Chance, what happened? I know you — or, at least, I thought I did. This isn’t you.

Chance: Justice was done, kevin. That is the bottom line. I ran this by the chief, as well, and he agrees. I made the right decision.

Kevin: So, what about victor? He just gets away with this like he does everything else? That man doesn’t just break the rules. He obliterates them.

Chance: Kevin, for everyone in the room, justice was done. Now, this was my call to make. It is over for us, and it is over for them.

Kevin: Wait. But what if this —

Chance: Kevin — kevin — kevin! Thank you for your help really. Thank you. You did a damn good job, and i really hope that we can work on something in the future. But it is time to move on. I’ll see you back at the station.

Adam: Kevin. I couldn’t help overhearing. Sounds like you’ve been left in one hell of a spot.

Our hillshire farm craftsman

[ Keys clacking ]

Lily: Hey. Where’d you go?

Billy: Well, I had to go have a conversation with my podcast partner and share the life-changing decision.

Lily: Uh-oh. Hope that went well.

Billy: And I wanted to pick up something that I’ve been holding onto for the right moment, and lo and behold —

Lily: Uh-oh. Turquoise ear pods?

Billy: Ah, that’s very funny. No, I actually think you’re really gonna love this.

Lily: [ Gasps ] Wow. Oh, it’s a yin and yang necklace. It’s beautiful. Is this because we’re opposites?

Billy: [ Chuckles ] No. It’s two pieces coming together to form a whole, much like us, two essential parts that are stronger together.

Lily: Mm. Thank you.

Nikki: Well, it certainly sounds like you have some bold plans in mind.

Victoria: Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Nikki: Oh, well, that is true. But don’t you think we should go over to newman tower for this video presentation? I mean, you’ll look more polished, more poised.

Victoria: Mother, nobody is gonna fixate on what’s going on in the back of my screen. Besides, I don’t want another minute to go by with our team wondering what’s going on with the state of the corporation and its leadership.

Nikki: Okay, okay, but why don’t I just jot down some notes you can use as a guide? That way, you know exactly what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Victoria: I’m speaking to you as my co-ceo, not my mother. This is business. I need to know that you trust me on this and that I have your full support.

Nikki: Well, yes, of course you do. I-I think you’re making the right decision. It’s very wise of you to get ahead of the internal issues and make a show of strength and decisiveness.

Victoria: Good. ‘Cause I already know exactly what I want to say. And I’ve reached out to nicholas and all of our department heads. My true leadership at newman enterprises is about to begin.

Victor: Okay, sweetheart.

Chance: Abby. Well, when you asked me to stop by, you didn’t say my wife would be here.

Victor: Well, in fact, your wife was quite adamant that i not call you.

Chance: Why is that?

Abby: You know, I just, um — I thought that you were busy, so, um… I’m gonna go relieve the nanny. See you at home.

Chance: I love you.

Abby: Love you. Bye, daddy.

Victor: Okay, sweetheart. Nice to see you.

Abby: You too.

Victor: Okay.

Chance: What’s this about?

Victor: I wanted to thank you for what you have done for our family. Wanted to thank you man to man.

Chance: Well, I don’t want or need your thanks.

Kevin: I don’t know what you think we were saying, but —

Adam: Well, from what i heard, someone made a bad judgment call without considering how it would affect you, kevin.

Kevin: Me? I’m fine.

Adam: Hmm. For now. But chance is a newman by marriage now, victor’s newly anointed family hero. And thank god for that. I mean, how convenient to have a son-in-law on the force. But, kevin, make no mistake. I’ve seen this movie before. Victor is going to use everything in his arsenal to make sure that boy scout stays squeaky clean and right where he needs him so he can make sure all their mistakes can simply disappear. And chance is gonna have no problem leaving you out to dry.

Kevin: That’s not true. Chance wouldn’t do that. We work together. He’s a good guy.

Adam: Mnh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that, okay? This isn’t something that you can sleep on, kevin. If you are smart, you will get out in front of this right now.

Young & The Restless Update

Y&R logo

Recap written by Christine

At Victoria’s, Nikki asked about the agenda for the video conference. Victoria said she planned to grow Newman and make it more powerful. She had her eye on five or ten acquisitions. Nikki looked concerned, and Victoria assured her she was thinking about smaller acquisitions, not something the size of the Newman Locke merger. Nikki saw the logic, but she was concerned about the timing. Nikki thought that Victoria was going at a 100 mph instead of processing things, like the closure of the investigation into Ashland’s death. Victoria said the company lost opportunities because she had to focus on Ashland, and that ended today.

Nick went to Sally’s office and told her they closed the case on Ashland’s death. Sally said the Newmans must be relieved. Sally was glad Newman Media wouldn’t have to navigate the moral minefield between what they owed the public and what was best to keep quiet for the good of the parent corporation. She knew he’d been worried about the impending media firestorm. He was glad he was wrong about that, and he appreciated her discretion and understanding. He said someone with fewer scruples could’ve exploited this.

Sally warned Nick that Adam approached her more than once fishing for information on Ashland’s death and Chance’s investigation. Nick asked how Sally responded. She said she told him she didn’t know anything. Nick said thanks. Sally said she didn’t do it for Nick, she did it because she was disgusted Adam tried to play on her feelings and tried to make her complicit in whatever move he was planning against Victor. He was sorry Adam put her through that, but he wasn’t surprised, since everyone who got involved with Adam got a rude awakening. Sally said Chloe had constantly warned her about Adam’s past. Nick had to go to his office for the video conference. Sally said he wouldn’t make it in time, so she suggested he stay and watch it with her.

Victoria started the conference, and she introduced Nick, who spoke glowingly about Victoria, the company and the division heads, from Sally’s office. Victoria stated that the company faced some challenges, but they were strong and resilient and ready to reap the rewards of their hard work. Sally played a role in the meeting – she’d be collaborating with another division head. The conference was a success, and Victoria ended the call. Nikki said Victoria was right about this video conference, and she was totally in her element.

Sally told Nick that Victoria was so poised and polished. Nick said she was a lot like Victor – her kids were her priority, but she was laser focused when it came to business. Sally wasn’t sure she could soldier on like that after breaking up with a lying bastard who suddenly died. Nick said Victoria was extremely resilient, and sometimes Nikki had to push her to take care of herself instead of just focusing on the business. Sally felt bad because she believed Adam when he painted Victoria as a spoiled pampered princess. She was embarrassed. Nick said Adam had a way to getting people to share his distorted view. Sally said it was clear after that call that Victoria wasn’t a princess – she was a warrior, a leader, and it inspired Sally to want to make Newman Media a success. Nick had no doubt Sally would, and he was glad she was on their team.

At the ranch, Victor commended Chance for closing the investigation into Ashland’s death. Chance said it wasn’t necessary. He did this to avoid putting Victoria through more turmoil, and because he thought Nick acted in self defense. However, he didn’t condone what Victor did. He said filing a false police report and obstruction of justice were crimes. He conceded that there were extenuating circumstances this time, but Victor couldn’t act outside the law with impunity. “The next time you cross the line I will be there, and I will make sure you are held accountable,” Chance stated.

Victor thought Chance should’ve issued that warning to Ashland while he was alive. Chance said they arrested Ashland for violating the restraining order, but his behavior didn’t change. Victor thought Ashland got what he deserved, but Chance felt that the end didn’t justify the means. It bothered Chance that Victor didn’t think he did anything wrong. Victor said he protected his family, and he’d do so again. However, he understood the conflict Chance felt. Victor promised he wouldn’t cause that kind of conflict again. “I’m not worried about you, Victor. I am worried about the rest of our family. Abby, Nick, Victoria, Nikki. Even Adam. Everyone adores you,” Chance said. He was sure they’d all be crushed if Victor was arrested. Victor said he’d been in jail before. Chance knew, and Abby had told him how tough that was for the family. Chance stated that Victor had more grandchildren now, and they looked up to him. Chance looked up to Victor too. He advised Victor to think about them. Victor snapped that he thought about them all the time. Chance said he wouldn’t cover for Victor again. Victor gave Chance a terse goodbye and asked him to show himself out.

Nick tracked Victoria down at the park and asked if she was avoiding the office. She kind of was, because she didn’t want to have to field questions about Ashland. He said if Sally was any indication, the department heads were willing to follow Victoria into battle. She showed him a list of all the companies she wanted to acquire. He was surprised she wanted all of them. He thought they were biting off more than they could chew. She saw his perspective, but she thought this was the time to be bold. He was concerned about the finances. She’d worked it out already. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with slowing it down and getting a feel for he landscape. He felt something was going on. She said she felt extremely confident in her position because she knew he’d always have her back after what happened that night. She thought she might have been killed if he didn’t show up. He didn’t want her thinking that way, but she said it was true – he saved her. She thought he was the best brother and colleague anyone could ask for. She had this idea that there was nothing they couldn’t accomplish together, and she intended to put that theory to the test.

Nikki told Victor that Victoria put to rest any concerns the department heads may have had about her ability to lead. She’d mapped out a ten year plan. Victor knew. He was on the call, but he didn’t put his camera on. Nikki asked what Victor thought. He said Victoria was wonderful, and he couldn’t have been happier with what she said. He’d been afraid Ashland shattered Victoria’s confidence, but it was clear she’d fully recovered. Nikki said these were aggressive moves, much like Victor might make. She thought Victoria was trying to prove that Ashland couldn’t defeat her and no one would. Victor said there was nothing wrong with that. He said he’d do the exact same thing Victoria was doing. He couldn’t be prouder.

Victor liked the way Victoria, Nikki and Nick worked together in the conference, like a well oiled machine. He felt that Victoria unified the Newman family. Nikki was thrilled to be working with Victoria and Nick. She was glad Ashland didn’t succeed in driving a wedge between all of them. Victor lamented where things stood with Adam. Nikki was sorry, for Victor’s sake, that Victoria and Adam didn’t reconcile. Victor said it was a problem he tried hard to solve for several years. He said Adam still held a grudge against Victor because Adam had been raised on a farm in Kansas without a father. Victor said it wasn’t his fault. He’d wanted to raise Adam in Genoa City, but Adam’s mother didn’t want that. Victor shifted gears and said they’d celebrate Victoria. “The Newmans are back,” he crowed.

At the park, Adam predicted that Kevin was going to get blamed for a negligent investigation and a sloppy cover up. Kevin didn’t buy it. Adam said he was just trying to help Kevin get clarity. Kevin said he didn’t need clarity. Adam said it wasn’t like the old days when Michael was the DA and could get Kevin out of jams. Kevin said even if there was a cover up, he wouldn’t be responsible, because he wasn’t a cop. Adam warned Kevin that Victor wasn’t going to protect him. Kevin theorized that Adam was looking for payback after Victor removed him as CEO. Kevin refused to help Adam.

Adam predicted Kevin would need an expensive lawyer. Kevin said that had never been a problem for him. Adam noted that Michael worked for Victor, which was a conflict of interest, so he wouldn’t be able to come to Kevin’s rescue this time. Kevin said that Adam wasn’t going to scare him. Kevin said there was no cover up – Chance went by the book, as always. He told Adam to let this go. Kevin left. Adam called someone and said he had a job for them.

At the rooftop bar, Chloe asserted that Chelsea was falling for Billy. Chelsea said Chloe was overreacting, just like she did about Rey. Chloe said she saw Chelsea interacting with Rey, and she knew how hard Chelsea took his death. Chelsea was adamant that Rey was just a friend, and she got defensive about it. Chloe apologized and said she was just worried when she saw Chelsea talking to Billy, and she was trying to be a good friend. Chelsea asked if a good friend would accuse her of trying to break up Rey’s marriage. Chloe clarified that she never said Chelsea was trying to break up the marriage. Chloe also wasn’t judging, she just saw a spark between Chelsea and the wonderful, forgiving and super-hot Rey. Chelsea smiled. Chloe said Rey was Chelsea’s knight in shining armor, and they spent all that time in Minnesota, so it was only natural for her to develop feelings for him. Chloe said Chelsea was on the rebound, and the Evil One was finally out of her life, and now that Rey was gone, she was lonely. Chelsea was fed up with Chloe calling her lonely, on the rebound, desperate and needy.

Chloe said Chelsea was pulling her words out of context. Chelsea said she was capable of making her own decisions – Billy was a friend and colleague. Chloe added that Billy was an ex and Johnny’s father, and it was easy for the lines to get blurred. Chloe knew from experience that Billy turned on the Abbott charm, and made you lose perspective. Chloe said Billy could make you feel special without being trying. Chelsea was offended Chloe was implying she was desperate. Chloe explained that she wasn’t calling Chelsea desperate, but vulnerable. Chloe thought Chelsea needed a sane, objective point of view to keep her from jumping off the edge.

Chelsea was pretty sure Chloe just called her crazy. Chelsea acknowledged she had a history of losing touch with reality, but she said Chloe did too. Chelsea said she didn’t throw Chloe’s mental struggles in her face every other day. “Just let me live my life, please!,” Chelsea snapped. Adam was walking in, and he saw Chelsea. Chloe tried to change the subject, but Chelsea wouldn’t allow it. Chelsea said she was an adult who was in control of her emotions, and she didn’t need a baby sitter. Chelsea was sorry – she didn’t mean to jump down Chloe’s throat, but she didn’t appreciate the insinuation. Chloe blamed herself for her imagination running away with her. Chloe had to leave, and she suggested they talk when things cooled off.

After Chloe left, Adam walked up to Chelsea and commented that her exchange with Chloe looked intense. Chelsea said good friends argued sometimes, not that Adam would know. He said she was being defensive. She asked how long he’d spied on her, and she took another shot at him about not having a job. He heard her podcast, and he enjoyed her poking holes in Billy’s over inflated ego. She replied that she had a lot experience dealing with arrogant men. She mentioned that Billy didn’t have time for the podcast anymore.

Adam said Chelsea could do her own podcast. She explained that Billy told her Chancellor Winters was willing to keep her on. Adam thought that sounded great – someone else would be putting up the money, and she wouldn’t have to deal with Billy anymore. Chelsea thought the podcast was good because of her banter with Billy. She said no one wanted to listen to her drone on and on, not even her. Adam said that he knew how much Chelsea loved the sound of her own voice. She laughed. He told her to get a co-host or bring on a weekly guest. She didn’t think that was a bad idea. She’d felt so inspired by the podcast, and it made her feel less invisible. He understood. He hoped she wasn’t talking like this around Connor, though. She was caught off guard and offended. She asked if he was saying she was an unfit mother if she wasn’t cheery all the time. He didn’t mean that, but he said Connor was a sensitive kid who picked up on their emotions. Adam tried not to talk to Connor about family issues for the same reason. She grudgingly said she’d put on her game face. Sally walked in and she left when she saw Chelsea and Adam. Adam got a call, and he rushed off.

Chloe went up to Kevin at Crimson Lights. He was on the phone reporting a theft. His car had been broken into, and someone stole his messenger bag, that was a gift from Chloe, and in the bag was his GCPD laptop.

A guy showed up at Adam’s hotel suite with Kevin’s satchel. He grumbled that Adam should pay him extra for having to steal from someone who worked for the GCPD. Adam took Kevin’s laptop. The thief really liked Kevin’s black leather messenger bag, so Adam let him keep it. Adam smiled triumphantly.

Young & The Restless Update

Recap written by Christine

Victoria came downstairs into her living room, and she remembered the pep talk Billy gave her the night before. She also recalled that Billy had told her he was thinking about making some changes in his life. Nikki came over, and they chatted. Nikki was glad to hear Victoria slept well. Victoria felt like she’d stepped into her new life and was ready to plan for life after Ashland. Nikki said Ashland met with a violent untimely death. Victoria thought he brought it on himself. She stated that the real tragedy was what Nick was going through. She thanked God Nick was there to save her. Nikki thought Victoria should take some time to deal with the fact that Ashland wanted to do her harm. Victoria said she already dealt with his lies, and now that he was gone, she wouldn’t wallow into how everything went so wrong. She’d already dug deep and mourned Ashland, and now she felt free. Nikki thought that was wonderful. Nikki was less pleased when Victoria said she had a drink with Billy of all people.

Victoria was about to go on a video call about her plans for Newman’s future. She was in a great mood, and Nikki told her to consider the optics, since as far as the rest of the world knew, Ashland had just died in a car accident. Victoria said she’d acknowledge her late ex spouse briefly, noting the irony that Newman Enterprises wouldn’t be the company it was without his dedication to growing the company’s reach. She was also going to put an end to the rumors and speculation about the company. Nikki said there were a lot of employees who were still loyal to Ashland. Victoria would make it clear that they were free to leave, but no other company would offer them the opportunity that Newman Enterprises would.

Nikki suggested they go to the office for the video conference, so Victoria would look more polished. Victoria didn’t think that was necessary. Nikki offered to take down some notes for Victoria to reference during her speech. Speaking to Nikki as her co-CEO, not her mother, Victoria said she needed to know Nikki trusted her. Nikki said of course she did. Nikki thought it was wise of Victoria to get ahead of the internal issues and make a show of strength. Victoria said her true leadership at Newman was about to begin.

Nick went to the ranch to talk with Victor. Nick was still grappling with causing Ashland’s death. Nick said he’d thought he’d killed a man, then because of Victor’s decision, he thought that he didn’t kill Ashland, then later, he realized that he did. Victor maintained that Ashland caused his own death. Nick said that was true, in the big picture, but he’d been forced to lie to the police, thanks to Victor. Nick had struggled to do what was best for Victoria, her kids, his own kids and his parents. After some time and distance from the situation, Nick understood Victor was just trying to be a good father. Victor appreciated that. Nick acknowledged that Victor and his security team had no idea what happened in the house when Victor decided to stage the accident. Nick said Victor acted on instinct, and at his core, he was predictably protective, and he’d do anything to protect his children. Victor said that would never change. Nick admitted Victoria came to this conclusion faster than he did. Nick though that Victoria was more like Victor than any of the other children were.

Nick thought Victor was lucky Chance closed the case. Victor was grateful to his son in law. Nick was surprised and relieved Chance didn’t continue the investigation. Victor was surprised his team had been so sloppy – they’d been fired. Nick asked what if Chance had kept the case open. Victor said that he would’ve handled it. Nick was troubled by how nonchalant Victor was about how close he came to going to jail. Nick wanted Victor to stop taking these risks. Victor said he’d never stop protecting his kids. Abby came over, and they all acknowledged what Chance did. Abby said he’d been right to close the case. Nick said he’d always be grateful, and he left for work. Abby was glad this was over and nothing bad happened to Victor. He intended to thank Chance later. She didn’t think that was a good idea. Abby said Chance had a strict sense of right and wrong. Victor was adamant that Chance did the right thing, but Abby said he didn’t see it that way. She said Chance was used to seeing things in black and white, and this was a gray area for him. Victor felt that, as a husband and father, Chance should know that it was always right to protect your family.

Billy brought Lily’s coffee to the office. He’d planned to give her breakfast in bed, but she’d left the house early to catch up on the stuff she missed while she was on her business trip. He talked about balancing the podcast and being her right hand. He’d figured out what he wanted to be when he grew up. He thought he’d spent time recording to avoid some issues, and that wasn’t fair to Lily or the company. He’d found a replacement. Lily was caught off guard by this sudden news, because she thought that he was quitting as COO. He said he’d found a replacement host for The Grinning Soul. He was walking away from both podcasts and focusing on her and Chancellor Winters. He said they could turn the recording studio into a meditation room. She asked if he really wanted this or if he was saying it because he thought it was what she wanted to hear.

Billy said of course Lily factored into his decision because he loved her. He realized the podcast was taking up too much space in his life, and he’d promised not to let that happen. He wanted to be a man of his word, and he’d told his mother that he wouldn’t let her down after what happened at ChancComm. Lily inferred that Billy was doing this because it was demanded of him. He said he was saying he wanted to be someone with integrity. He didn’t want to do a half-assed job while everyone else was putting their blood sweat and tears into the company. She asked if he was sure, because she didn’t want him to resent her. He didn’t like the feeling that something was changing between them, and he didn’t want to take advantage of her. He said this was where he wanted to be and where he belonged.

Chelsea ran into Adam at the rooftop bar and asked why he was reading the Newman Media website. He said he was trying to stay abreast of the investigation into Ashland’s death. Chelsea assumed Adam’s family was relieved to be done with Ashland. Adam said they hoped. She asked if there was something else about Ashland’s death that was being kept under wraps. He didn’t know. He found out about his family the same way the other lowly non-Newmans did – he read about it. Chloe came up. Adam hoped Chloe and Chelsea became a dynamic duo again. He left.

Chelsea liked Chloe’s dress. Chloe said it was Chelsea’s design. Chelsea knew, but she said it wouldn’t have gone into production if it weren’t for Chloe. Chloe heard the podcast. Chelsea said it was fun, and she faced criticism from the listeners, but she got to give it back to Billy. Billy was the best, according to Chelsea. She said doing a podcast felt like walking on a tightrope, but she felt safe with him, because if she was about to fall, he’d fall first to take the pressure off her. She used to edit herself, but now she felt like she could say how she felt. Chloe felt kind of jealous that Chelsea could let loose with Billy in a way she couldn’t with Chloe. Chloe was really happy Chelsea had this opportunity that was exactly what she needed. Chelsea said she really needed this job – it pulled her out of her own head. Chloe knew Chelsea wasn’t having it easy at Fenmore’s, and she understood why she had to go on hiatus from designing. Chloe thought Rey would be proud of Chelsea, almost as proud as Chloe was. Chelsea could tell something was off with Chloe.

Chloe admitted she was dealing with a lot and some days seemed bigger than others. Chelsea asked if Chloe was afraid to spill because of the animosity between Sally and Chelsea. Chelsea confessed that Chloe was right not to badmouth Sally to her, because if she did, Chelsea would later throw it in Sally’s face. Chloe said she and Chelsea did know each other well. Chelsea thought Chloe was the smartest most intuitive hardest working person, and Sally was lucky to have her. Chloe said her issues were just growing pains, and maybe one day she’d be in a position like the one Chelsea landed in. Billy came up and pulled Chelsea aside.

Billy informed Chelsea that he was leaving the podcast. He thought she should take over. She called that the worst idea he’d ever had. He had faith in her ability to run the show without him. She questioned him walking away, just like that from something he clearly loved. He said the podcast had been a distraction from his commitments. She thought he was saying it was a distraction from his real job, and she said he’d never been more real or more alive than when he was behind that microphone. She said the whole point of doing this was she was doing it with someone who really got her and was really fun. He enjoyed working with her, but he made a commitment to Chancellor Winters. It didn’t make sense to her that he was in a rush to get back into a world that he’d admitted he didn’t belong in. He said he had to show he belonged there and see this through. She vowed to say “I told you so” when he inevitably realized he made a mistake. He left.

Billy went back to work and gave Lily a yin yang necklace. She thought it was beautiful, and she asked if it was because they were opposites. He said it was like them – two central parts that were stronger together. They kissed.

At the park, Kevin was eager to hear how the DA reacted when Chance handed them the evidence of the cover up. Chance said he concluded there was no probable cause. Kevin protested, and asked if this decision came from Paul. Chance said it was his decision. Kevin didn’t understand Chance’s reasoning. He thought Chance had more than enough evidence for the DA to get a conviction. Chance said he made the right choice. Kevin said Chance could keep telling himself that, and whether he pursued the case or not, the evidence still existed. Kevin said there could be serious blow-back for both of them if the evidence came to light.

Chance said the conclusion from the investigation was in the police report, and some of it had been redacted, so it wouldn’t be publicly available. Kevin pointed out that several people knew Victor covered up how Ashland died – he and Chance knew, the Newmans knew, and so did the so did Victor’s security guys. He said the truth always had a way of coming out. Kevin’s mom and brother had played fast and loose with the law and it came back to bite them. Kevin had made mistakes, and he’d worked hard to turn his life around, and he made a commitment to Chloe and his kids. Chance said he did a full investigation and he put everything in the report.

Adam was coming into the park and he saw the discussion. Kevin asserted that Chance would pursue the case if it involved anyone besides Victor. Chance said he didn’t do this for Victor. Adam stepped behind a pillar and listened in. Chance denied that he was protecting his father in law. Kevin said anyone on the outside would say “There go the Newmans again, standing shoulder to shoulder against all foes,” Kevin said. Kevin stated that Chance was a Newman, so people would think he was ignoring the facts. Chance said Ashland showed up at his ex’s wanting revenge, and his death was unintentional, whether it was caused by a car accident or someone protecting his sister. Chance thought it was best not to drag the family through whatever charges the DA might file, because it could be a scandal for the real victim, Victoria. While Kevin fully agreed, he said it was the DA’s call, not Chance’s.

Kevin said this wasn’t like Chance. Chance was adamant that justice was done. He’d run it by the chief, and he agreed. Kevin asked if Victor was just going to get away with this like he did everything else. Chance said that for everyone in the room, justice was done. Kevin pressed the issue, and Chance got frustrated and shut it down. Chance was grateful for Kevin’s help on this job, but it was time to move on. Chance left. Adam walked up and said he overheard everything.

Kevin pretended not to know what Adam was talking about. Adam said he’d heard that someone made a judgment call without thinking of how it’d affect Kevin. Kevin claimed he was fine. Adam said that was true for now, but Chance was a Newman by marriage, and Victor’s newly anointed family hero. Adam thought it was convenient for Victor to have a son in law on the force. Adam said he’d seen this play out before – Victor was going to do everything in his power to make sure Chance stayed squeaky clean, so he could fix all the Newman’s legal problems, and Chance would have no problem hanging Kevin out to dry. Kevin knew Chance was a good man who wouldn’t do that to him. Adam didn’t think Kevin should be so sure about that. Adam told Kevin that the smart thing to do would be to get out in front of this.

Chance came to the ranch at Victor’s request. Chance didn’t realize Abby would be there. Victor said Abby had been adamant that Victor didn’t call Chance. He asked why, and she said she just thought he was busy. She left to relieve the nanny. Victor thanked Chance, man to man. Chance said he didn’t want or need it.
