Xander: You, uh, haven’t eaten much. Not hungry?

Gwen: Late luncH.

Xander: Hmm. So, um, did you get a chance to think about what we talked about earlier, coming with me to statesville?

Gwen: About going to see rolf, right. Because if he has the antidote for the drug that he created that caused sarah to lose her mind, well, then you just might get the old sarah back. And wouldn’t that be brilliant?

Maggie: [Laughs] Well, looks like you’re settling in.

Tony: The scotch is superb, maggie.

Maggie: Ah, great. Victor and i are about to retire for the evening, and I just wanted to make sure that you have everything you need.

Tony: Oh, i do, thank you.

Maggie: I know that victor has yet to welcome you.

Tony: I don’t think he ever will. I can’t imagine he’s happy about a dimera staying under his roof.

Maggie: [Clears throat] I can handle victor.

Tony: [Laughs] Like no one else.

Maggie: Mm, tony, I want to thank you again for agreeing to move in here.

Tony: Well, we all want the same thing, for sarah to be healthy again.

Maggie: Yeah. And I have to say that anna was the unsung hero in all of this. Because I know how difficult this has been for her.

Tony: It has been difficult. But she’s come to understand that we all want to do is just help sarah. And she’s totally on board with my staying here.

Anna: On board, my eye.

[Dramatic music]

[Suspenseful music]

Chad: [Sighing] Ugh. Okay.

Leo: Wait a minutE.

Chad: I thought you wanted me to get in the bed.

Leo: Oh, I do. But I got to see that ass first. Even better than i imagineD. Now, let’s get this party started.

Chloe: Mm, thank you. Look, I know what we’re doing is best for my dad, but it just kills me to know that he’s gonna have his heart broken.

Abigail: We are doing this specifically to help your dad.

Chloe: I know, I know, and I also hated dragging you and chad into this.

Abigail: Oh, no, no, you didn’t drag us. I mean, hey, like I said, gave me an opportunity to work on my acting chops, right?

Chloe: Playing the younger version of my mom. “The nancy wesley story,” where she finds out that her husband is actually attracted to men.

Brady: You pulled it off brilliantly, by the way. Leo had no ideA.

Abigail: Yeah, well, thank yoU. But now it’s chad’s turn. You know, I just hope he’s ready for his close-up.

Leo: I cannot believe this is happeninG.

Chad: Neither can I.

Leo: Don’t worry, I’m gonna be real gentle. My lovemaking philosophy is based on the ike and tina turner version of “proud mary.” We’re gonna go real nice and slow in the beginning and then finish, well, not so nice.

Craig: What the hell is going on?

[Soft orchestration]

Craig: What are you doing? Who is this guy? Who are you?

Chad: Me? Nobody.

Leo: Actually, he’s chadwicK. Chadwick, this is my boyfriend, craig.

Chad: Oh, my god! I never should’ve–

Craig: What are you doing in bed with this guy?

Leo: Well, the truth is–

Chad: No, the truth is that nothing actually happened, but we were totally gonna go all the way.

Craig: Get dressed.

Chad: It’s craig, right?

Craig: Yeah. It’s craig.

Chad: Craig, I’m– I feel very bad about this. Really, I feel terriblE. The truth is I was drinking, and I sort of just showed up on leo’s doorstep, but I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you to find out that the person that you love is cheating on you. Ugh.

Chloe: The sooner we get that snake out of our lives, the better. Leo’s done enough damage and not just to my dad.

Abigail: What do you mean?

Chloe: Oh, um, I’m sorry, but my dad took your aunt, kayla’s, job at the hospitaL.

Abigail: What?

Chloe: Yeah, I guess he’s the new chief of staff at university hospital.

Abigail: Wait. Are you serious? They fired my aunt kayla?

Brady: They did. Chloe and I are convinced that when leo found out that kayla’s job was in jeopardy, he probably pushed craig to go after the job. Leo made this happen.

Xander: Judging by your attitude, you’re not particularly thrilled at the prospect of coming along with me.

Gwen: Thank you. I’m sorry about being negative beforE. It’s–

[Sighs] It’s not about sarah. I understand why you’d want to help that poor woman. I just– I’m not proud of my association with rolf. I was in a very, very– I was in a very dark place when I went to him about abigail.

Xander: Well, you’re not that person anymore.

Gwen: Which is why I don’t want to go back to that part of my life. And especially now that jack has forgiven me for my past misdeeds.

Xander: Well, just think of it this way. If you convince rolf to help sarah, then jack and the whole horton clan will be forever indebted to you for bringing sarah back to them, I mean–

Gwen: Why do you need me to come and help you with rolf? Didn’t you meet him nashville? You probably have a better relationship with him than I do.

Xander: Yeah, but it’s not a particularly good onE. I mean, he hates my guts. Gwen, of course I understand why you’d be reluctant to come along with me and, I mean, it’s obviously gonna bring up all these bad memories. And obviously, i realize that, um– well, I’d be a fool not to, wouldn’t I?

Gwen: What do you realize?

Xander: That you don’t want sarah to get better.

Tony: Anna, what are you doing here?

Anna: Well, what does it look like, darling? I’ve come to take you home.

Tony: But i thought we agreed.

Anna: Yeah, well, I changed my mind.

Maggie: I’ll give you two privacy to discuss this.

Sarah as renee: Really, anna? Isn’t it bad enough that you’re squatting in the dimera family mansion? Now you’re stalking us?

Anna: I have come to take my husband home where he belongs.

Sarah as renee: I’ll handle this, darling. I know this must be difficult for you, anna, but it’s time that you realize that what you thought you had with tony is oveR. He and I are finally back together, and tonight we’re gonna prove it in every way imaginable.

[Dramatic music]

Abigail: I mean, not only is my aunt a brilliant doctor, she’s totally beloved at that hospital, and they just fired her without warning?

Brady: Actually, they did warn her.

Abigail: I don’t understand. What could aunt kayla have possibly done to deserve to lose her job?

Brady: Abby, she refused to fire marlena.

Abigail: What?

Chloe: Yeah, the hospital board was pressuring kayla to fire marlena ’cause of the whole devil possession situation.

Brady: A lot of patients were filing complaints.

Abigail: Oh, my god. That didn’t even occur to me. What a horrible position for kayla to be in.

Brady: And when she didn’t comply, the board decided to go ahead and get another chief of staff that would do the dirty work.

Abigail: Unbelievable. So you both think that it was leo who put craig up to putting his hat in the ring or whatever?

Chloe: I think we’re pretty sure of iT.

Abigail: Such a nightmare. Although, it sounds like aunt kayla would’ve lost her job no matter what, which is totally awful and unfair. I just hope that we hear from chad soon.

Brady: Yeah. Well, look, it’s getting late, and I have a little girl that i need to tuck in. So do you want to come over to my place and we can wait on word there on operation oust leo?

Chloe: Yeah, I’d love that, and I’d love to give that little girl a smooch myself.

Abigail: Well, I promise that I will call you as soon as I hear that your dad has kicked leo to the curb.

Chloe: Thank you.

Brady: Bye.

Abigail: Bye.

[Sighs]

Chad: Leo said that you were at work. I certainly did not intend for you to walk in on us.

Leo: Maybe you didn’t, but I did.

Chad: You did? What are you talking about?

Leo: I texted my boo to come home. Isn’t that right, sweetheart?

Craig: “Come home quick,” he wrote, “I have a surprise for you.”

Chad: When did you do that?

Leo: When I went to the bathroom to change.

Chad: Why did you do that?

Leo: Come on now, chadwick. You didn’t really think we were gonna have sex without my boyfriend joining us, did you?

Gwen: How dare you.

Xander: How dare I what?

Gwen: How dare you make me out to be like I’m the bad one here, xander? I mean, like I’m the reason that sarah’s running around town believing that she’s some long-dead dimera heiress. That is all on my sister.

Xander: I never said you were to blame, gwen. I’m just saying that it feels a little like maybe you don’t want to help me help sarah.

Gwen: And why would I do be in such a rush to help you? So that sarah can go back to her fabulous, old wonderful self, and then the two of you can just get back together and live happily ever after? Because that is the plan, isn’t it?

Sarah as renee: Tony and i are reunited, anna. It’s time for you to face the facts.

Anna: Well, i have a few facts for you, dearie. Like for starters, you are not–

Tony: Anna! That’s enough. Maggie, do you mind if you could give us a few moments alone so we can talk?

Sarah as renee: You can’t be alone with this lunatic.

Anna: Oh, I’m the lunatic? Really? I’m the one doing the third-rate impersonation of a dead woman?

Maggie: Renee, it’s a glorious night. The moon is full and i’d love for you to see the garden. Why don’t you come out with me?

Tony: Yes, why don’t you? Just for a few minutes. Would you do that for me, dear?

Sarah as renee: Fine. But when i come back, you had better be gone.

Tony: What’s the matter with you, anna? I thought we had an understanding that I would stay here to help. Instead, no sooner do I leave the house, you come bursting in here loaded for bear.

Anna: Because you don’t belong here, tony. You belong with me. And I know I agreed to this ridiculous arrangement, but once i had a chance to think about it, I could– I realized just how unfair it really is.

Tony: Anna, listen to me. Actually, you know this already. But I’ll say it once again in the hopes that it’ll actually register. My living arrangements here are temporary to keep sarah stable so they can finally cure her from her break from reality.

Anna: And what if they never find a cure, tony? That woman believes that she is renee dumonde with every fiber of her being. And god help me, in spite of her lousy impersonation, she gets under my skin like– like only the real renee could.

Tony: But, anna, you have to be the rational one herE. She’s a scared, fragile young woman who needs our help.

Anna: Yeah, well, that scared, fragile young woman wants to take away my husband. And I will not just be passive and polite about it.

Tony: Oh, for heaven’s sake, anna! I’m not gonna go to bed with sarah horton. And the fact that you have the slightest fear that I would is not only insulting to my loyalty, my integrity, but also my intelligence. So for god’s sake, just trust me, will you? And go homE.

Anna: Fine. I’ll go home. Yes. And I’ll spend my evening wondering why my husband is spending his evening with some other womaN. And a lunatic at that.

[Dramatic music]

Xander: Gwen, I realize how difficult this must be for you.

Gwen: I fell in love with you, xander. And you completely changed my life. Now, it feels like you are slipping awaY.

Xander: I’m not slipping away; I’m right here. Come oN. Listen to me, gwen. You and I found each other when the whole world turned its back on us, and we held on to each other. That kind of connection doesn’t come along often.

Gwen: I’m sure our connection just pales in comparison to the epic love story of xander cook and sarah horton. Hm? The devilish rogue and the noble, beautiful doctor.

Xander: Don’t do that. Don’t make light of what you and I sharE. It’s every bit as real as what sarah and I shared. I love you. Gwen, you have to believe that.

Gwen: I want to believe that. I really want to believe that, but it’s very difficult when, in practically the same breath, you are asking me to help you get your old fiancée back. Well, I am your fiancée now. I am your fiancée, xander. And you are still avoiding the question. What happens if–when– when sarah gets better? Will you still want to marry me? Or will you want to marry her?

Tony: Oh, you’re back from the touR. How was it?

Sarah as renee: Oh, lovely, if you like looking at flowers and twigs in the darK. I’m very happy to see you got rid of anna.

Tony: Ah, yes, she left.

Sarah as renee: Hm. Maggie, I really must thank you for your hospitality. And I promise that tony and i will not overstay our welcomE. As soon as our lawyer extracts anna fredericks from the dimera mansion, then we will reclaim what’s ours. Now, if you don’t mind, tony and I would like some time alonE.

Maggie: Ah– [Clears throat] Well, okay. Um, I mean, if– if it’s all right with tony.

Sarah as renee: If it’s all right with him? Why would you think it isn’t?

Tony: Why, indeed? It’s fine with me.

Maggie: Okay then. Well, good night. Hope all goes well.

Sarah as renee: Thank god. I thought she was gonna suggest a round of hot cocoa. When i have something much better in minD.

Brady: Here you go.

Chloe: Thank you. And thank you for letting me wait here with you. The idea of running into my dad at the salem inn right now–

Brady: You’re afraid he’s gonna blame you for leo and chad, right?

Chloe: Ugh, you should’ve seen how upset he was with me earlier. I mean, he accused me of lying and scheming, and he’s right.

Brady: You’re doing it all for his own good, okay?

Chloe: Well, the way he looks at it is that I’m interfering, and it’s none of my business.

Brady: I know, chloe. He’s ticked off right now. But right now he is actually learning who leo stark really is. And eventually, he’s gonna be eternally grateful to you for loving him enough to look out for him.

Chloe: I hope you’re righT.

Brady: I am right. I know I’m grateful to you.

Chloe: Why?

Brady: Why? Let me see. You really have to ask? You have been there for me, right by my side through my worst moments and my best moments, and you’re my constant. I can’t imagine my life without you.

[Tender music]

Craig: So you want all three of us to–

Leo: Have sex. Yes. It was the funniest thing. I was having dinner by my lonesome. There’s a knock at the door. Voila. It’s chadwick. Three sheets to the wind and begging me to sleep with him.

Chad: I didn’t beg.

Leo: He begged. I almost felt embarrassed for the guY. Obviously, my instinct was to kick him out. There is only one man for me, and that is you, craig wesleY. But he was so insistent, so desperate to get into our bed. And then I started thinking about you and how new you are to all of this and I thought, “wait a minute. Chadwick could be like a present.”

Chad: A present?

Leo: Wrapped up in a bow. A gift from me to the man I lovE. Okay, no, no, no. You don’t have to say anything. But I promise you will thank me later.

Craig: I just–I never–

Leo: Of course you haven’T. Of course you haven’T. That’s what you have me for, to help you explorE. And I promise this will bring us closer together, if that is even possible. So gentlemen, what do you say? We ready for our three-way?

Brady: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What’s wrong?

Chloe: Uh, nothing. I’m just– what if your dad walks in like he did last time?

Brady: Chloe, he’s probably asleep.

Chloe: Okay, what about marlena? Or what if they want a snack or a glass of water or something?

Brady: Then they come out here and they catch us making out on the couch like a couple of teenagers, big deal.

Leo: What’s the problem? What’s the problem? I thought you wanted to hook up.

Chad: No, not with the both of you.

Leo: Why not? Don’t you find craig attractive?

Chad: No! I mean, sorry. YeS. You– you’re a–you’re a fine– you’re a fine-looking per–man. It’s just that I–

Leo: It’s just what, chad? It’s not what you expected, because you and your wife set this whole thing up to trick me into cheating on my boyfriend?

Abigail: No. You were screaming. So what, did something happen with tony?

Abigail: This has to do with sarah, right?

Anna: No, this is about renee dumonde, who came between tony and me almost 40 years ago. And silly me, I thought her being dead would mean she’s out of our liveS. But no such luck. That woman is back and after my husband again.

Tony: Sarah–renee, I hope you didn’t think that–

Sarah as renee: Oh, i know. I know, that annoying maggie horton could come back any moment wanting to show me her figurines collections. So let’s go upstairs to our bedroom.

Tony: Didn’t maggie tell you? I asked for separate rooms.

Sarah as renee: Separate rooms? Why would you do that?

Tony: Because of anna.

Sarah as renee: Anna? I thought that you were done with that woman. I thought that you wanted to be with me. Isn’t– isn’t that why you’re here?

Xander: GweN. When we got together, I thought sarah had dumped me for her ex, that she– that she didn’t want me anymore, she hated me.

Gwen: Now we know that that wasn’t the case.

Xander: No, it wasn’T. She was drugged and kidnapped.

Gwen: And presumably still very much in love with you. And that changes everything, doesn’t it? For you, for us.

Xander: I don’t know. I– I wish I did. And I do not blame you for being upset. But I have to see this through. I have to at least try and help sarah. Look, don’t worry about coming with me to statesville. I shouldn’t have asked. I’ll go alonE.

Tony: Of course I want to be with you.

Sarah as renee: Then why are you so concerned about anna?

Tony: Because anna and i are still married. And if she finds out that i’ve been unfaithful, she’ll use it in the divorce. She’ll take me to the cleaners.

Sarah as renee: So? Who cares? I’m rich enough for the both of us. Or have you forgotten that i am the sole heir to stefano’s estate?

Tony: Oh. Oh, yeah. Yeah. There is that.

Sarah as renee: You see? Money’s not gonna be a problem for us. So let’s go hit the sack.

Abigail: Well, sarah must have really absorbed what she read in renee’s diary.

Anna: Boy, did she. And all of the diaries to get ahold oF. Couldn’t she have found, I don’t know, maybe dorothy parker’s diary and turned herself into somebody who made us all laugH. But no, she had to become renee dumonde, bitch on wheels, who never gave tony and me a moment’s peace. And now I fear this version of her won’t either.

Abigail: I’m so sorry.

Anna: Yeah, well, hey, I guess I just have to suck it up, right? Especially since tony is taking the high road and– and trying to help. But abigail, it makes me so angry and jealous and all sorts of feelings that I don’t want to havE.

Abigail: Well, hopefully you won’t have to feel them for very lonG.

Anna: I hope so too, obviouslY. And I’m sorry, enough about me. What’s going with you? Where’s chad tonight?

Abigail: Oh, he’s– he’s out right now. He–well– he is pretending to want to have sex with someone he despises in order to help out our friends.

Anna: What?

Abigail: It’s a long story. I don’t think you really need to know it.

Anna: Okay. Wow.

[Chuckles] Wow. If stefano could see his sons now, selflessly helping others instead of plotting world domination.

Leo: Kind of a scream, really, you and the wifey giving me a front row seat to that little act of yours. “You haven’t touched me in months, chad!” And for her encore, greta garbo–i mean abigail dimera came to me and begged me not to sleep with chad no matter how badly he wanted it. Kind of overplayed it, chewed the scenery, as they saY.

Chad: Shut up, abigail’s a great actress.

Leo: It’s hard to believe, but chad has never appreciated all that I have to offer. So your plan was a bust from the beginning. Unless, of course, you want to stay. We could absolutely salvage the eveninG.

Chad: Get out of my way.

Craig: Wait a minute. You–you don’t know me. You have no stake in whether I stay with leo or not, so why are you doing this? Why–why do you care? What’s in it for you?

Leo: Maybe deep down, chad was hoping something really would happen tonight.

Chad: No, what I was hoping for was to show you what a dirtbag he is. Look, craig, I’m really sorry about all this. I did it as a favor for friends, people I care about, who care about what happens to you so much that they would be willing to do anything to try to open your eyes about this con artist. Look, if you’re not willing– if you’re not willing to see who he really is, then it’s on you.

Leo: Said the guy who knocked up his children’s nanny.

Chad: Get out while you still can.

Craig: Damn it.

Leo: Who are you calling?

Craig: My daughter. Obviously, she has something to do with this.

[Tender music]

Sarah as renee: I’ve dreamt of this for so long, tony. Waking up with the sun to make love.

Tony: Uh, yes. Wait.

Sarah as renee: What?

Tony: Wait. Well, it’s not actually about the moneY. It’s anna and her temper. She–oh, she gets so jealous. If she finds out about this– and she will, she’ll drag this out in the court forever. And she’ll– well, neither of us wants that, now do we?

Sarah as renee: We’ve already waited for years.

Tony: Yes, but if we can be patient just a little longer, oh, we can have whatever we want.

Sarah as renee: Patience isn’t exactly my strong suit. But if it means that we can get rid of anna fredericks for good, I’ll try.

Tony: [Chuckles] That’s my girl.

Sarah as renee: [Chuckles]

[Dramatic music]

Anna: Well, I’m off to bed. Not that i will get much sleep, thinking about sarah chasing tony around the kiriakis mansion.

[Cellphone beeps]

[Gasps] It’s from tony. He says he never loved another woman as much as he loves me. And he’s counting the seconds until he can return to me.

Abigail: See? I told you, you have nothing to worry about. Now, if I could just hear from my husband, huh?

Chad: Great. Hi.

Gwen: Hey. You all right? You look a bit, um–

Chad: I’m fine. Thanks. Never better.

Xander: Oh, hey, I’m planning to make a trip to statesville to see rolf. I was just wondering if you have any, you know, pointers on how to handle him right now.

Chad: Is this about finding out if he has the antidote for the drug that kristen gave to sarah?

Xander: You know?

Chad: I dO. Actually, abby and i were already planning to visit hiM.

Xander: Chad, that’s greaT. That’s fantastic.

Chad: Yeah, well, just so you know, we’re doing this for sarah. We couldn’t help chloe, so maybe at least we can help her.

Xander: Chloe?

Chad: Never mind.

Leo: You can’t call chloe, not while you’re this upset.

Craig: Why are you so calm? Chloe and her friends have done nothing but harass you, and now they–they send this chad guy to seduce you? I’m sorry you had to go through this.

Leo: I’m sorry too. You have no idea how much.

Xander: Oh, this is– this is great news. If anyone can get rolf to give up the antidote, it’s stefano’s baby boy. This is just the break we needed– I’ve done it again, haven’t I? I’m sorry, gwen.

Gwen: No, it’s okay. Really, it’s fine. I’m glad that chad can help you.

Xander: Do you mean that?

Gwen: I dO. And if for some reason chad can’t get through to rolf, then i’ll give it a go.

Xander: Really?

Gwen: Not for sarah. But I would do it for you.

[Soft dramatic music]

Brady: That– that was worth the waiT.

[Cellphone beeps] Ignore it. Ignore it.

Chloe: No, no, what if it’s one of the kiddos?

[Sighs] Oh. It’s from chad.

Brady: What happened?

Chloe: Ugh, leo happeneD.

Brady: What do you mean?

Chloe: I guess leo figured out it was a trap.

Brady: Oh, damn it. Really?

Chloe: [Sighs] Yeah. He tried to cover his tracks by texting my dad and pretending like he wanted him to walk in on him and chad. Oh, my god. My dad’s gonna be furious at me. And this whole plan with leo didn’t even work. Ugh.

Abigail: You’re homE. How did it go?

Chad: Well, if you consider almost having your first gay threesome a win, then it was a smashing success.

Craig: I’m sorry, i hope you don’t think I’m a prude.

Leo: For being hesitant about a threesome? Well, then i’m a prude too because I am strictly a one-man kind of guy. And you’re all the man i need. I only threw it out there to call chad’s bluff.

Craig: We should sue his ass.

Leo: Something like that.

Craig: Yeah, I–I– I just don’t– I just don’t think you should have to endure all this because you chose to be with me. I’m–i’m sick of it.

Leo: I am too. But it’s obvious chloe’s not gonna stop.

Craig: No, it doesn’t look that way.

Leo: I just wish that there was some way I could convince her that this is the real deal, that I am a new man because of you and because of our love, and I am in this for the long haul.

Craig: There is something you can do.

Leo: What?

Craig: Marry me.

Brady: Well, I’m sure he enjoyed that.

Abigail: Oh, he ate it up. Believe me. So how are things going on your side?

Brady: Well, Chloe and I tailed Craig to the hospital like a bunch of secret agents.

Abigail: What is he doing at the hospital?

Brady: We’re not sure yet. Chloe’s there now; she’s gonna try to intercept Craig to stall him long enough for Chad to work his magic on Leo.

Abigail: Poor Chad.

Brady: Hopefully, Chloe will send Craig home at the right time.

Abigail: Yep, to find Leo in bed with my husband.

[Knocking on door]

Craig: Come in

Chloe: Dad, hi.

Craig: Sweetheart. This is a surprise. How did you know I was here?

Chloe: I just ran into Steve and Kayla, and they said that you took her job.

Craig: Yeah, look. Look, Kayla was gonna lose her job no matter what. I just presented the board with a viable alternative.

Chloe: And was that your idea or Leo’s?

Leo: Yeah. Craig is at his new job.

Chad: I’ve had a very rough day. Abby and I, we got in a… a big fight.

Leo: I know. She was just here.

Chad: She came here?

Leo: Mm-hmm.

Chad: What did she say?

Leo: She’s pretty upset. She accused me of causing trouble between the two of you.

Chad: [Laughs] That’s ridiculous. I don’t know what she’s talking about. I don’t know what she’s…

Leo: Well, for starters, she says that you call out my name in your sleep.

Chad: Okay. I explained that to her. I was dreaming about a dog that I had when I was a kid. His name was Leo.

Leo: I don’t think she was convinced, and neither am I.

Chad: It wasn’t about you. I loved that dog. It was a schnauzer. You are the last thing on my mind, trust me.

Leo: Oh yeah? Then what are you doing here?

Craig: Leo believes me in me, Chloe. And, yes, when we found out that the chief of staff position might become available, Leo suggested that I lobby for the position.

Chloe: Oh, I knew it.

Craig: Well, I’m qualified, and I need a job!

Chloe: What, why?

Craig: Because I’m bound to be fired from the one I have now thanks to your mother badmouthing me to all of my colleagues and anyone else in New York who’ll listen that I split up with her because of Leo.

Chloe: I’m sorry that she’s doing that, but that doesn’t mean that you’re entitled to Kayla’s job.

Craig: Look, you don’t understand what’s going on. Kayla refused to fire Marlena.

Chloe: And why on earth would she do that anyway?

Craig: Because the board has a problem with someone claiming that they’re possessed by the devil. All I did was I tossed my hat in the ring. If I didn’t, they’d hire someone else.

Chloe: Okay, so it’s really awful for Kayla and Marlena, but the point is, Leo put you up to this. Dad, I can’t understand why you don’t see that he’s pulling you into his schemes and his lies. Come on!

Craig: You know what, Chloe? From the way I see it, the only one scheming and lying is you.

Rafe: [Sighs] Can we do this every night?

Nicole: We can do whatever you want now that Ava’s out of the picture.

Rafe: Ah, Ava. I really thought she’d changed.

Nicole: So did I. But the way she tried framing you, that’s a bona fide Vitali move. I just hope she’s done trying stuff like that.

Rafe: You try not to worry about it, okay? ‘Cause if she tries that again, I’m ready for her.

Nicole: Well, cheers to your freedom.

Rafe: Yeah, and to us. You know, aside from the obvious reasons that I didn’t wanna go to prison, I didn’t want to miss this. A night with you.

Rafe: Well, I was worried I might end up in a cell with Elvis, Jr.

Orpheus: Save the fake news for somebody else. Before he blew out of here, Clyde told me you know the truth. That he was responsible for your near-death experience.

EJ: Clyde and I hashed it out. He expressed remorse for what he did.

Orpheus: And he was so convincing that you said let bygones be bygones?

EJ: Let’s just say I’ve agreed not to turn him in.

Orpheus: Good move. Because I’m sure here to make sure you keep your mouth shut.

Ben: Could we talk about this when Clyde’s not in the room?

Clyde: Hey, Ciara’s entitled to her opinion. If she doesn’t want me here, we should at least discuss it

Ciara: Look, I’m sorry, it’s nothing personal here. It’s just even if you do plan on becoming this model citizen, I’m sure you have a lot of enemies that still have it in for you. And if you’re living here, they will come looking for you here, and I’m having a baby in a couple of months.

Clyde: Oh, I’d take a bullet for that baby you’re carrying.

Ciara: I don’t want bullets in this house; I don’t want any bullets anywhere.

Ben: That’s not gonna happen.

Clyde: Wait.

Ciara: How do you know it’s not gonna happen?

Clyde: Listen. I’ve been in the slammer so long that most of my enemies are dead or locked up for life. Parole board has decided that I’ve paid my debt to society, and since I really want to be around while my grandchild is growing up, I know I have to walk the straight and narrow.

Ciara: The straight and narrow. Does that seem a little boring to you?

Clyde: It looks really appealing to me right now. And I know from Ben that a leopard can change his spots.

Ciara: No, no, no, you made Ben that way. He wasn’t born that way.

Clyde: Yeah, but you made him the man he is today. So all I’m asking for is a chance to prove myself to you. The same chance that you gave him.

Chad: I was pretty surprised to run into you last night. You and your new boyfriend. So I don’t know, I just thought that maybe, you know, we could catch up.

Leo: Why? We aren’t exactly besties.

Chad: Maybe, but we had quite the adventure a few months ago.

Leo: Yeah. We’ll always have Phoenix. Abigail says you talk about that trip all the time.

Chad: She exaggerates.

Leo: She also says she caught you in drag. And that you want to get me into bed.

Chad: She’s paranoid. I’m devoted to her.

Leo: Are you? See, I have a little confession to make. Before you spotted me in the square last night, I heard the two of you arguing. And I heard Abigail say that you haven’t touched her in months.

Chad: Oh, god.

Leo: Is Abigail right? Are you having naughty thoughts about little ol’ me?

EJ: Clyde doesn’t trust me? I’m shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

Orpheus: Clyde’s not the trusting type. He’s been so frequently disappointed by his fellow man.

EJ: And what are you, his enforcer?

Orpheus: He and I have a cautious alliance. He tries my patience, but he can be very useful now that he’s on the outside. Let’s just say that I have a vested interest in Clyde remaining at large.

EJ: Well, I have no plans to do anything to jeopardize his freedom. When you report back to him, feel free to tell him I said that.

Orpheus: I will. And I’ll also be keeping a close watch on you.

EJ: Oh, I’m flattered.

Orpheus: A smart mouth can get you into trouble in a place like this.

EJ: I’ll take my chances.

Orpheus: I keep a low profile around here, but I have eyes and ears all over the place. Very little happens that I don’t know about. Keep that in mind if you decide to use what you know about Clyde. I would hate for life inside to become unpleasant for you.

EJ: Why, Milo, if I didn’t know better, I’d say you were threatening me.

Ciara: Look, I am all for you getting a chance to prove yourself and redeem yourself genuinely. I am, I just do not understand why you have to do it when you’re living in this house.

Clyde: I’d rather be on my own, too, but the parole board wouldn’t go for it. They said I had to be with family, and Ben’s the only family I got left.

Ben: If we kick him out, they can revoke his parole. They’ll send him right back to prison, Ciara. Do you think maybe we can try giving this a shot?

Chloe: I’m the one who’s scheming?

Craig: Mm-hmm. Like pretending to give Leo a chance when you had no intention of doing so. You know, Chloe, you have been trying to sabotage this relationship from the moment it started. You think I’m some kind of chump or something.

Ben: Look, I’m gonna say one thing, and that’s the end of it. Ciara, when I was looking for you, my dad literally shivved Orpheus to get his phone away from him just so I was able to reach you.

Clyde: You might’ve left out the part about the shiv.

Ben: All I’m trying to say is if this guy didn’t stick his neck out for us, you and I might not be together right now.

Ciara: I might not even be alive.

Ben: I would really like to return the favor and let my dad stay here. Just for a little while.

Ben: I mean it, Dad. Right now, that baby is the number one priority. If you get into anything illegal, no matter what it is, you’re out of here. Even if that means you get sent back to Statesville. You understand?

Orpheus: Although, the equation changes if you’re released. And I know your lawyer’s preparing an appeal.

EJ: And I know it’s in everyone’s best interest if we let bygones be bygones. Clyde has nothing to fear from me.

Orpheus: I hope not. For your sake.

Chloe: My dad is so upset with me already. If he finds out that I helped set this up…

Abigail: Brady?

Abigail: I just heard from Chad, and Leo went for it, so Chloe’s got to get her dad there now.

Brady: Chad just told Abigail that Leo took the bait.

Orpheus: How’s life on the outside?

Clyde: Better than life on the inside.

Orpheus: No doubt. I’m calling you because I just had a conversation with EJ DiMera. He said all the right things, but he’s got an attitude. I’m not sure we can trust him to keep his mouth shut. Before push comes to shove, we may have to eliminate him.

Clyde: Do what you have to do.

Orpheus: May I assume I have your blessing?

Clyde: You may.

Rafe: Yes, it is. Do you know the last time we were here in this kitchen? When I was arrested, you know, I had asked you what you thought about starting our relationship, and you never ally answered me.

Nicole: Well, there was a lot going on.

Rafe: True, yep. Yeah, but now here we are back in the kitchen so I’m gonna ask you again. What do you think about you and me?

[Soft music]

Ava: Aww. How adorable.

Rafe: How the hell did you get in here?

Ava: With my key.

Rafe: Put it down and get out.

Ava: Oh, please. You think you can get rid of me that easily?

Sonny: Oh, by the way, I got your message, okay, I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I was taking will and arianna to the airport this morning.

Chad: Well, I thought–i didn’t think that arianna started school until next week.

Marlena: Good morning, seth. I was just about to leave.

Craig: Leo, nobody double-crossed you.

Leo: They did it to you. It’s the same as doing it to me. A staff position? Are they kidding with that?

Craig: Okay, just calm down and let me explain something here.

Leo: Okay.

Craig: Seth burns was not in his office yesterday when I went to the hospital, but when I ran into kayla, I had to tell her something. So I told her I was looking for a new job, even if it was entry-level position.

Leo: But you said that just to throw her off. You didn’t actually mean it.

Craig: I didn’t realize we were tag-teaming the job search.

Leo: Honestly, look at the hours. Look at the money. How many degrees do you have? Babe, they’re low-balling you.

Craig: I thought you didn’t care about the money.

Leo: I don’T. I mean, it’s not everything, but you are so smart and talented. You deserve a way better job than that. Tell them what they can do with their staff position.

Craig: Okay, leo, I was thinking about this a lot last night, and if I take a job like this–

Leo: But–

Craig: Let me finish please. If I take a job like this, we can stay in salem just like we planned. The stress level will be cut in half, and I can go back to patient care.

Leo: Draining boils? Checking prostates? Yuck, is that really what floats your boat?

Craig: I would be doing a lot more than that.

Leo: What about all of the people that worked under you when you were chief of staff at that hospital? They’ve been dealing with an iron lady like kayla johnson all these years. Don’t you care about them? I thought you wanted to protect what you helped build.

Craig: I care very much about that.

Leo: Finally, then pick up the phone, call this burns guy, tell him you’re rejecting that offer, and the only offer you’re accepting is chief of staff.

Kayla: I made it clear that I had no intention of firing marlena.

Seth: The pressure I’m getting is building, not just from the board members, but from the community. They’re deeply worried about having a psychiatrist on staff who claims to have been possessed by the devil, and there’s a new rumor floating around now about your daughter. This is an untenable–

Marlena: May I just say something please?

Steve: Well, I tracked her down to a motel in brookville just this morning. By the time I got there, she’d cleared out.

Steve: I thought she’d go a lot further when she first took off, maybe go to ground in philly. But since she stayed in the area, I have a feeling she’ll be back.

Nicole: Not very smart of you to come over here, ava.

Ava: Well, I had to offer my congratulations. I saw the verdict on tv.

Rafe: Oh.

Nicole: Well, it would’ve made more sense to send a card since the police are looking for you.

Ava: Rafe’s no longer on the force, so he can’t really do anything about it.

Rafe: Well, as a matter of fact, I can. ‘Cause I just got a text from the mayor saying since I’ve beaten those bogus charges, I’ve been reinstated as commissioner. Well, I guess my first official act will be to place you under arrest. You know liberty mutual customizes your car insurance,

Tripp: I hope mom does come back. I know you probably don’t and with good reason. I had my guard up with her at first, but I really do think she’s changed.

Steve: I know you do.

Tripp: I just can’t see why she’d be involved in kidnapping abigail dimera. I mean, she doesn’t even know her.

Steve: Well, I don’t understand her motive either, but she was at that airstrip talking to abigail right before she got knocked out and flown to the dimera private island.

Tripp: Okay, but abigail is home safe now. So won’t the police have to drop this? It’s not they have any proof that mom was involved.

Steve: Maybe not, but that might not be the only crime your mother’s involved in.

Ava: You got handcuffs on you? Oh, wait, there might be some in the bedroom.

Rafe: You know, going to jail is no joke, ava.

Ava: Know what? You’re a joke. Well, what exactly are you gonna arrest me for?

Rafe: Leaving the police station when you were in custody.

Ava: What custody, hm? They hauled me in for questioning. No one said I couldn’t leave.

Nicole: Then why did you hire some phony lawyer to smuggle you out of the police station?

Sonny: You know, that’s a very good point. I don’t know, do you think abby would be like willing to crank it up another notch.

Abigail: Oh, it’s nothing fun unfortunately. We’re gonna see dr. Rolf at statesville, just to see if he can do anything for sarah.

Sonny: Right, and how’s it going with her?

Abigail: Well, she got the same drug that gwen gave me, only she got a much stronger dose because it wasn’t diluted with champagne like mine was, so… aunt kayla said the damage to her brain is pretty severe, and they’re not sure if they can reverse it. But–so we’re all–we’re just hoping that dr. Rolf has some sort of an antidote.

Sonny: Right, right. And that requires you both to go to statesville?

Chad: Okay, sonny, look, I know that getting leo is important to you, but abigail is my life, and she was kidnapped because somebody didn’t want her to help sarah, and now she’s going to visit that crazy bastard at prison because of sarah. I sure as hell ain’t gonna leave her alone this time.

Sonny: Right, right, of course, I’m sorry. I’m being an idiot. I don’t know, this whole thing with leo has become such an obsession with me. And now I’ve dragged you guys into it, and I don’T… you know what, maybe I should just give up on nailing leo.

Abigail: Or you can just get it done tonight.

Craig: Yes, please have mr. Burns call me back at his earliest opportunity. I greatly appreciate it. Thank you. His assistant says he’s out of the office on a personal matter.

Leo: Personal matter, right. He’s making sure kayla’s giving dr. Devil the ax, and if she hasn’t–

Craig: I asked him to set up a meeting, so let’s just be patient and see what happens, okay?

Kayla: You are not gonna be bullied into quitting. I won’t stand for it. You are a senior member of the staff here, and you deserve some loyalty.

Seth: Retirement is an option.

Kayla: How many times has marlena been voted doctor of the year?

Seth: I’m certain she won’t be receiving that title this year.

Kayla: That situation that you are referring to has been resolved.

Seth: Situation? That’s a euphemism for the ages.

Kayla: It was beyond marlena’s control.

Seth: Tell that to the people suing the hospital. Tell that to the board members. Your loyalty to your friend is admirable, but I think your loyalty to the hospital should supersede it. I recommend you take some time to reconsider your decision. I’ll be back.

Tripp: Yeah, and I just read that he was found innocent.

Steve: Right, ’cause there were too many questions about the evidence against him. And rafe thinks that ava used her criminal ties to reach out to some of her old friends in philly and persuaded them to lie under oath.

Tripp: Well, she left that life behind.

Steve: So she said.

Tripp: And why would she do that to rafe? I mean, she’s totally in love with him.

Steve: Well, rafe suspects that she found out that he and nicole are more than friends, and they were lying to her about it.

Tripp: So the person she loves and her best friend were sneaking around behind her back? Yeah, I know how that feels.

Ava: An accessory to kidnapping?

Rafe: Abigail found out that you were pretending to be sarah horton.

Ava: So I put on a mask and pretended to be someone else. It was a prank.

Nicole: We all know it wasn’t a prank.

Rafe: Yeah, first you tried to convince abigail that you were sarah, and then you were seen at the airstrip where abigail was kidnapped.

Ava: So?

Rafe: So you witnessed whoever knocked her out, and instead of coming to the police, you left town.

Ava: And now I’m back.

Rafe: Yes, you are. Why?

Marlena: Kayla, seth has a point.

Kayla: You did nothing wrong.

Marlena: And if you don’t fire me, they will replace you with somebody else who will. And I don’t want you out of a job.

Kayla: No, I am not gonna lose my job, and it’s not because of you anyway. Look, you are my dear friend, and of course, I love having you around, but this is a matter of principle. Firing you sends a message to the rest of the staff that a personal problem is a fireable offense.

Marlena: Yes, but this is a fairly unique personal problem.

Kayla: I don’t care. I’m chief of staff, and if I can’t control the staffing, I might as well not even have this job. Look, I am not going to let seth burns bully either one of us, and I’m not gonna change my mind about that.

Craig: I don’t see him anywhere.

Leo: He’ll be here. He called you right back to set up this meeting.

Craig: Yes, let me get right to the point, seth. I hear there may be some rumblings about replacing the current chief of staff, and, well, I wanted you to know that if that’s the case, I’m very interested.

Seth: I see.

Craig: And of course, if you have another candidate in mind–

Leo: This is what I love about him. He doesn’t toot his own horn. Anybody who did for the bottom line at your hospital what he has done would be screeching about it. Not my craig.

Seth: And what did you do for the bottom line?

Leo: He increased profit by over 200% in five years.

Seth: Ah, and how did you do that?

Leo: By running a tight ship. Not that he isn’t beloved by all who know him.

Craig: Leo. Let me speak for myself.

Leo: I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I can’t help but chime in. I’m just so proud.

Seth: Look, craig, you need to know I haven’t fired dr. Johnson yet.

Craig: Well, I understand, but I know how difficult it can be to replace someone at the top.

Leo: Luckily, craig is ready. He is efficient, effective, and respected. The complete package.

Sonny: Look, I’m counting on you, chloe, okay? The timing of this, it has to be perfect. All right, I’ll be in touch. So, guys, hey, focus.

Sonny: Oh, my god. That she and brady are keeping tabs on craig, okay? They will make sure that he does not walk in on you and leo too early or too late.

Sonny: Okay, well, something tells me that’s not gonna be a problem.

Abigail: Okay, well, then I guess it’s time for me to go and trash our marriage. Wish me luck, guys.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Ava: I had to come back. All my stuff is here.

Rafe: I’ll pack it up and send it to you. The key.

Ava: You gonna give it to her while I watch?

Ava: I don’t understand why you’re being so hostile.

Ava: No, I don’T. Because it was you two that were having sex on the conference table and then lied to me about it for months. And then you falsely accused me of getting you falsely accused of a crime.

Nicole: Oh, come on. You set rafe up, and it looked like a setup. That’s why he was acquitted.

Ava: I just came back here to pack up my things and to congratulate the two of you. Had I known you were gonna be so nasty I wouldn’t have even bothered. I’ll send you my forwarding address.

Rafe: Good.

Ava: Assuming you weren’t really going to arrest me. I didn’t think so. Have a wonderful life, you two. For as long as it lasts.

Nicole: Wow, one thing I can say about her, lady knows how to make an exit.

Tripp: Mom said something to me that’s starting to make sense now.

Steve: What was that?

Tripp: She was kind of warning me about trusting in love. I thought she was talking about allie and me, but maybe she was talking about herself, even though she was totally right about allie and me.

Steve: I’m sorry that didn’t work out.

Tripp: Better to find out now I guess. You know, it’s just, I gave allie so many chances to tell me she and chanel were more than friends, and I had to find out from johnny.

Steve: Well, you really got blindsided.

Tripp: Yeah, I was even starting to think of chanel as my friend. Kind of like mom and nicole. Makes it a lot worse.

Steve: So how are you holding up with all this, man?

Tripp: I miss her a lot. And, henry, he and i spent so much time together. Sweetest little guy.

Steve: Yeah, it’s gonna take a while to get over this. Just know that I’m here for you, buddy, okay?

Sonny: Okay, but that was completely different.

Chad: Okay, fine. Yes, so I’m not gonna sleep with him, but I’m still busting up his relationship.

Sonny: Yes, yes, so that you can save craig wesley from a world of hurt down the road.

Chad: Okay, then let me ask you this, is craig gonna see it that way?

Leo: And nothing happened. It was a misunderstanding.

Abigail: Well, it had a lasting effect on chad. I mean, it happened months ago, but he won’t stop bringing it up. I mean, he keeps going on, and on, and on about what a great time that he had. And I just–I got so sick and tired of hearing about it last night, we got into this huge argument and then, I heard him saying your name in his sleep.

Leo: He did? Maybe he was talking about another leo.

Abigail: Please, it’s obvious my husband is attracted to you.

Leo: It is?

Abigail: I saw the way that he was looking at you when we ran into you at the town square. And I saw the way that you were looking at him.

Leo: Oh, I check every guy out; it means nothing.

Abigail: Okay, look, chad and I, we have just gotten through so many issues in our marriage, all right? And I thought we were in a good place, like, really a good place. Apparently, we’re not, but we have two kids who need their father. I am begging you, please whatever you do, don’t sleep with him again. No matter how bad he wants you to.

Kayla: Now that belle is herself again, this should all just blow over.

Marlena: You don’t know how much I hope you’re right about that.

[Knocking on door]

Kayla: Yes.

Seth: I assume you haven’t changed your mind about what we discussed earlier.

Kayla: No, I haven’t, and I’m not going to.

Seth: Then I’m gonna have to take that decision out of your hands.

Kayla: Well, you can’t fire marlena without giving her a hearing before the board.

Seth: I’m not firing marlena.

Kayla: Good.

Seth: I’m firing you. It’s my 5:52 woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Rafe: I’m cleared. Ava’s gone. We’re together. It’s over.

Nicole: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I’d like to believe that. But I can’t stop thinking about ava’s parting words. “Have a wonderful life, you two, for as long as it lasts”? What the hell does that mean?

Rafe: It’s just ava trying to get in the last word.

Nicole: It was carefully phrased. I mean, she could have meant, “I hope you die,” “I hope your relationship dies a slow and painful death,” or my favorite is, “I’m putting a mob hit out on you tomorrow.”

Rafe: I’m not worried about ava.

Nicole: Rafe, we lied to her for way too long.

Rafe: I agree.

Nicole: She went out of her way to get back at you, and it didn’t work. I’m afraid she’s out for blood. She could have been telling us that she is not done with us.

Ava: How sweet. The world is full of love today.

Tripp: Mom, where have you been? I’ve been really worried about you.

Ava: Oh, honey, I just needed to get away from things for a while.

Steve: Police are looking for you.

Ava: I’m aware of that. I just saw rafe, and for some reason he didn’t run me in. Maybe he had more important plans with nicole.

Steve: What do you know about what happened to abigail?

Ava: I’m under no obligation to answer any of your questions, steve. I came here to take our son out to dinner. He and I have a lot to catch up on. So what time are you off duty here?

Tripp: About a half hour ago.

Ava: Oh, great, let’s go eat.

Tripp: All right, sure. See you soon?

Steve: Yeah.

Marlena: If you can’t fire me, you shouldn’t be able to fire kayla.

Seth: The bylaws, dr. Evans, state that the staff physician requires a hearing prior to termination, but the board can remove a chief of staff for cause, which we have. While dr. Johnson is being removed as chief of staff, her hospital privileges are suspended pending review.

Kayla: I see. Well, I imagine you’ll need me to stay on while you search for a replacement.

Seth: I’ve already found your replacement, dr. Johnson. Now, please clear things out of this office. I’d like dr. Wesley to start as soon as possible.

[Tense music]

Chad: From what you’ve told me, this guy craig is nothing like you were. He seems to know exactly who leo is and doesn’t care.

Sonny: No, no, no, no, he thinks he knows leo, but he’s new to this game, okay? And the longer it goes on, the worse it is gonna be when leo inevitably stabs him in the back. And he–no, no, no, he will do it after he’s drained this guy for every cent he can get. You know what? No, no, no, and for the record, for the record, what gwen put you through is nothing like this.

Chad: You don’t know that. You weren’t here.

Sonny: Okay, gwen made you believe that abigail was cheating on you when really wasn’t, right?

Chad: Yup.

Sonny: Okay, look, I’m sorry I freaked out, but all we’re doing is giving leo the chance to show his true colors. He doesn’t have to take the bait. How this turns out is entirely up to him.

Leo: What is your name again?

Abigail: Abigail.

Leo: Okay, abigail. Here’s the deal. I’m in a committed relationship. I’m happy for the first time in my life, and I wouldn’t do anything to ruin that, not even for a guy as hot as your husband.

Abigail: So even if he were interested in you, you wouldn’t entertain the idea of doing anything at all?

Leo: No, no entertaining at all, doll. You have nothing to worry about.

Abigail: Thank you. Oh, god, thank you. Okay, all right, well, I gotta go before chad wonders where I am. I mean, assuming he even notices I’m gone.

Leo: All right.

Abigail: Thank you.

[Clears throat]

[Phone line trilling] All right, yup, did my best to lay the groundwork. You’re on. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Rafe: You know, ava’s blasé about the long reach of the law, and she shouldn’t be because she set up the wrong guy. I’m gonna get to the bottom of abigail’s kidnapping and ava’s involvement in it. I promise you that.

Nicole: Okay, good.

Rafe: That didn’t sound like you believe me.

Nicole: It’s just that I’ve never been in a relationship with a cop before, and it’s kind of nice.

Rafe: Oh, really? You know, well, I’ve never been in a relationship with someone like you before. It’s also nice. I feel like we waited a long time to be in this relationship, and I, for one, feel like we got some catching up to do. Problem is, I smell like flop sweat, and stale cigarettes, and mildew.

Nicole: Oh, the hearty combination.

Rafe: Yeah.

Nicole: I’m sure a shower sounds pretty good right now.

Rafe: You know, actually, a bath sounds even better, especially if you join me.

Nicole: Ah, I think the chances of that are excellent.

Rafe: All right.

[Soft music]

Tripp: Dad told me about rafe and nicole. I’m sorry that happened to you.

Ava: Yeah, well, part of me knew about it.

Tripp: You were right about allie, too.

Ava: What do you mean? What happened?

Ava: Honey, I’m so sorry.

Tripp: Thank you for giving me your grandma’s ring to give to her, but I won’t be needing anymore.

Ava: Why don’t I just hold on to this for you until you meet the right woman?

Tripp: Okay.

Ava: She’s out there somewhere, and she’s gonna be so lucky when she finds you.

Steve: Ava just left the hospital with my son. They’re on their way to dinner. Closest place is the cafe in the square. I want you to keep an eye on her in case she tries to flee jurisdiction again. Thanks. Marlena.

Marlena: Oh, hi, steve.

Steve: Is kayla in her office?

Marlena: Yeah, she is, but…

Steve: What, what?

Marlena: I’m so sorry to tell you this. Kayla was just fired.

Kayla: So last night when I ran into you in the square, did you suck up to me because you didn’t want me to suspect that you were gonna steal my job? Or did you want me to give you a job if your grand scheme didn’t work out?

Craig: Kayla, I actually have mixed feelings about this whole situation. And then again, I didn’t create it; you did when you put your loyalties to an old friend ahead of the responsibilities to the hospital.

Kayla: You told seth burns that you’re gonna fire marlena, didn’t you?

Craig: She is claiming that she’s been possessed by a devil. Now, either marlena is going through a breakdown of some kind or–

Kayla: Or what?

Craig: I’m gonna do what has to be done.

Kayla: Leo put you up to this, didn’t he? Well, it worked. The office is all yours. Good luck with the job. You’re gonna need it.

[Tense music]

Craig: [Sighs]

Leo: Hello.

Craig: I’m at the hospital. I’m gonna be here for a while.

Leo: Does this mean you got the job?

Leo: Kayla was just fired. I start immediately.

Leo: Babe, I knew you could do it!

Craig: Thanks for believing in me. Anyway, I think things are gonna get busy here very soon, and I may not see you a lot for the next couple of weeks.

Leo: It’s all gonna be worth it, you’ll see.

Sonny: Hey. So how’d go with leo?

Abigail: Gave it everything I had, but oof, oof, oof. I mean, the idea of my husband coming onto that guy…

Sonny: Right, I get it. Thank you for being such a good sport.

Abigail: Well, you know, my motives aren’t entirely unselfish. It’s very good practice for my budding career as an actress.

Sonny: Right.

Abigail: Yeah, but in all seriousness, if leo is really into chad, then the sooner he’s gone the better.

Sonny: Yeah.

Leo: I’m still hungry.

[Knocking on door] Is that the wife again? What does she want now? Listen, sweetheart, I… chadwick, what are you doing here?

Well, it certainly complicates things, but, um, I’m hanging in there. Looks like xander’s just come back with some treats.

[Mouths words] Um, yeah. I will. Dad, thank you for phoning. Yeah, we’ll talk soon. Bye.

[Cell phone beeps] What did you bring me?

Xander: The scones you love, of course. That was jack on the phone? Everything’s okay?

Gwen: Yeah, he’s just– he’s just a bit concerned about me now that sarah’s back.

[Sighs] He guessed correctly. I mean, things have been quite a struggle for me. And, um, he also said that he is going to be here for our wedding. That is, assuming you still want to get married.

[Elevator chimes]

Abigail: Aunt maggie?

Maggie: Oh, abigail! Oh, my goodness. Oh, it’s so good to see you, sweetheart.

Abigail: You, too. How’s sarah? Are there any changes?

Maggie: Unfortunately, no. I’m just waiting for kayla to go over her test results.

Nicole: Nothing’s changed. He’s still in a coma.

Rafe: Oh. I’m assuming this means there’s no news on ava.

Nicole: Nothing. It’s like she’s vanished into thin air.

Melinda: My office has just been informed that the jury’s verdict in the rafe hernandez case is imminent. The speed with which the decision has been made gives me every confidence that the verdict will be the correct one: Guilty.

Ava: Damn well better be.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Gwen: I asked you a question. Do you still want to marry me?

[Sighs] Bloody hell, xander. Please say something.

Xander: Gwen, come on. You know how much I love you.

Gwen: That is not an answer.

Xander: You’re right. It isn’t, and I’m sorry, but the truth is right now, I just–I don’t have one. I don’t see how I can make plans for the future until I know that sarah’s gonna be okay.

Gwen: And what happens then? What happens when she gets better, if she does?

Xander: I don’t know. Gwen, I’m sorry. I know that’s not what you want to hear, and I swear I’m not trying to hurt you. I just–I do not have a better answer for you right now. Look, I’ll be back later, okay?

Gwen: Where are you going?

Xander: The hospital.

[Dramatic music]

Maggie: Abigail, no. What happened to sarah was not your fault.

Abigail: No, but it is. If I hadn’t convinced gabi to dig up rolf’s drug, then the syringe–it never would have been in the secret room. And then kristen–she never would have used it on sarah.

Maggie: Well, then it was kristen’s fault. It was not yours. And besides, there’s one important detail that you’re leaving out in all of this.

Abigail: Which is?

Maggie: Which is if it weren’t for you, I would still believe that my daughter willingly left salem. Instead, she was actually being held prisoner.

Abigail: Oh. Well, I don’t know if I can really take credit for rescuing sarah. I mean, I only found her because I was hit over the head and then kidnapped to the same island where she was being held. It was just dumb luck that i happened to stumble across her.

Anna: I’m sorry. I must be hearing things. A crazy woman has verbally assaulted me repeatedly, and you want me to apologize for how I reacted?

Tony: Anna, she’s not crazy. She’s been traumatized, drugged.

Anna: [Scoffs] And that excuses her behavior?

Tony: Perhaps not, but what excuses yours?

[Phone rings]

Anna: Answer your phone.

Tony: I don’t have my phone.

Anna: Well, neither do I.

Tony: Well, it’s probably the land line.

Anna: Oh, we never get anything but robocalls on that line. No worries. I’ll get it. Hello. This is anna dimera.

Sarah: Ugh, god. The way that you say that.

[Nasally] “Anna dimera.” You just love using my fiancé’s name, don’t you? Let me tell you something, anna fredericks. You might think that I have been sidelined, but it won’t be long until I am home where I belong and you are where you belong. On the street!

Anna: It’s for you. It’s my 3:10, no-exit-in-sight,

Rafe: How does someone just walk out of the pd and vanish?

Nicole: With a little help, obviously.

Rafe: Yeah, exactly. And unless we find out who helped ava or find ava herself, there’s no way that I can prove she set me up. Which is obviously what she wants. So looks like she’s gonna get her revenge.

[Cell phone rings]

Gwen: Hello?

Ava: Hey, it’s me.

Gwen: Ava, you shouldn’t be phoning me.

Ava: Yeah, relax. It’s a burner phone and no one can track me.

Gwen: Well, there’s something to be thankful for.

Ava: Oh, I got a lot to be thankful for.

Gwen: You’re in a good mood.

Ava: Well, yeah. Are you not watching tv? Da trask just announced that the jury’s gonna be back any minute, and when they hang that guilty verdict around rafe’s neck… his little fairytale life with nicole’s gonna go up in smoke.

Gwen: Not to mention the several years he’s going to spend behind bars.

Ava: Yeah. That, too. That bastard’s finally gonna get what’s coming to him.

Maggie: Dumb luck had nothing to do with you finding sarah. It was your tenacity and your courage that brought her home, and I will be eternally grateful to you for that.

Kayla: Maggie, I’m so glad you’re here. Hi, abigail.

Abigail: Aunt kayla.

Maggie: Do you have sarah’s test results?

Kayla: Yes, I do.

Maggie: And?

Kayla: It’s not good news. I’m sorry.

Tony: Hello.

Sarah: Oh, tony! Oh, thank god. It’s me.

Tony: Oh, sarah–renee.

Sarah: Yes it is, my darling. Oh, you have to come and get me right now. You would not believe the indignities that I have suffered. They have me tied to the bed.

Tony: Tied to the–

Sarah: I’m going crazy without you. And for us to be reunited after all that time and then torn apart– it’s sheer torture. And all I want to be is in your arms, my precious tony. The love of my life. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Nicole: Okay. Hey, rafe. Rafe, listen to me, okay? You cannot give up. We don’t even know what the jury’s gonna decide.

Rafe: Okay, yeah, but those cons’ testimonies were pretty convincing, and you know, trask certainly made the most of it, you know? It doesn’t help that she has an axe to grind.

Nicole: No. That was partly my fault. I mean, how stupid was it to pose as a reporter to try to get that con hutchins to admit that he was lying?

Rafe: Well, look, you were just trying to help.

Nicole: Yeah, but all I did was fire up trask to go after you even harder. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry about that.

Rafe: Hey, listen to me, okay? I do not care what happened with that damn witness. The only thing that I care about and the only thing that matters to me is that you have been there for me every step of the way ever since all this crap went down, okay? I’m so grateful for that.

Melinda: Oh. Sorry to interrupt this touching moment, but I thought you’d want to know that the verdict is in.

Ava: Mm, yes, it is very satisfying that my plan worked out quite brilliantly.

Gwen: Well, hurrah for you. You screwed over your boyfriend.

Ava: Who screwed me over first.

Gwen: Except for the getting sent to jail part.

Ava: What has gotten you in such a foul mood, hmm, debbie downer? I mean, is it sarah? Oh, god. Did she come home and run straight into xander’s arms?

Gwen: Let’s just say it wasn’t quite the reunion that he expected.

Sarah: What are you doing? Why did you hang up? Tony didn’t get a chance to respond to my request! Well, he’s probably on his way to rescue me. And what do you want, alex? Did you come to sign the divorce papers? No, no, no. You wouldn’t make it that easy on me now, would you?

Xander: It’s not alex. It’s xander.

Sarah: Oh, god. Here we go with the strange nickname.

Xander: How you doing?

[Rattling]

Sarah: How do you think? Might as well be in a cage.

Xander: I’m sorry. I do hate seeing you tied up like this.

Sarah: Do you really mean that?

Xander: I do.

Sarah: Then why don’t you untie me?

Kayla: This is sarah’s most recent brain scan. The drug affected this area here which controls your long-term memory.

Maggie: Well, I’m– there must be something that you can do to reverse that damage. I mean, abigail got the same drug, and she’s recovered.

Kayla: True, but I compared these results to a scan that we took of abigail right after her exposure, and the damage to sarah’s brain is far more extensive.

Maggie: Well, why would that be?

Abigail: Is it because of how the drug was administered?

Kayla: Well, that’s part of it. Abigail, you ingested the drug orally in a glass of champagne, so the liquid diluted the drug and mitigated its impact. Sarah, on the other hand, was injected with a full syringe of a larger dose that was concentrated, so I’m afraid the damage to her brain is far more severe.

Maggie: Kayla, what are you saying? Are you saying my daughter’s never gonna recover?

Kayla: I think it’s too early to make any definitive prognosis to predict to what degree sarah will recover or what the timeframe will be. Right now, we are just trying to come up with an effective treatment. I do think that our best option right now, though, is to transfer her to bayview.

Maggie: Bayview? An institution?

Abigail: Isn’t there something more that you can do for her here at the hospital?

Kayla: We’re working on that, and we will know more when we get the report from the specialist who’s gonna study the scan. But in the meantime, I think keeping her here against her will is not doing her any good.

Maggie: But I don’t understand. Why would she be better off in an institution?

Kayla: Well, you have power of attorney over sarah’s medical decisions, so what happens next is really up to you. As long as sarah is not a danger to herself or anybody else, you get to decide where she’s treated.

Maggie: Well, then I think the best medicine for my daughter would be for me to take her home.

Xander: I don’t think that untying you is a very good idea right now.

Sarah: ‘Cause you just love seeing me this way, don’t you?

Xander: No, I don’t love it. I hate it. It makes me very sad.

Sarah: Yeah, well, I’m even sadder just watching you stand there and stare at me, as if I needed more proof that you don’t give a damn about me.

Maggie: Xander. What are you doing here?

Sarah: God’s sakes! She calls you that, too?

Xander: I just wanted to see how renee is doing.

Sarah: His name is alex, and as you both can see, I’m doing great. Just on top of the world.

Maggie: Kayla has her test results. I’ve given permission for her to share that information with you. She’s at the nurse’s station.

Xander: Thank you, maggie. Look, I am so sorry for what you’re going through.

Sarah: I should have known he’d be no help. And you can go ahead and follow him out that door.

Maggie: I know you’re angry with me for signing those papers, and I’m sorry that you are so upset.

Sarah: You think?

Maggie: But you’re being released.

Sarah: [Gasps] Thank god!

Maggie: I came here to take you home.

Sarah: Home where? Not your home.

Maggie: Yes, my home. And yours.

Sarah: Sorry. No. The only place that I am going when I get out of this torture chamber is to tony, the man that I love. And if I cannot be with him, I will lose my mind.

Anna: Well, what did “renee” want?

Tony: For me to get her out of the hospital.

Anna: [Chuckles] And why not? You’ve been acting like her lapdog. Why not her getaway driver, too? You didn’t agree to it, did you?

Tony: She hung up before I could respond.

Anna: Well, please don’t tell me she’s made a break for it.

Tony: She’s in restraints.

Anna: Well, thank heavens for small favors. Well, now that we know she’s all safely trussed up, I believe you and I have a date with a plate of lobster newburg.

Tony: Not so fast. I believe you were to apologize first.

Ava: So you’re telling me that sarah is in la-la land, and she thinks that she is some woman named renee dupree?

Gwen: Dumonde. And she thinks that xander is some bloke named alex something-or-other from whom she wants a divorce from. She thinks he’s some lowlife gold digger apparently.

Ava: [Chuckles] So she hates xander aka alex something-or-other, and that is a good thing, right?

Gwen: Yeah. You would think. Xander just won’t let it go. Sarah is all that he talks about. I mean, he couldn’t get out of this bloody hotel room fast enough to go see her at the hospital. He thinks that they can bring her back to reality. Considering the fact that abigail recovered from the concoction that I put in her champagne, I have every reason to believe that sarah will, too.

Ava: Okay. Xander loves you, gwen. He’s engaged to you.

Gwen: Yeah, but he was also engaged to sarah once. And as my lovely sister was so eager to point out to me, the only reason that he’s with me is because he thought that he’d lost her. And what if she does snap out of it? What becomes of me then?

Ava: Yeah, well, I wish I could tell you, but chin up, right? Whoa. Well, here it is.

Gwen: Here what is?

Ava: The verdict’s in. I gotta go.

[Suspenseful music]

Rafe: Hey. Well, this is it, huh? Moment of truth. Migraine attacks?

Rafe: Okay. Better get in there, you know, in case my lawyer has any last-minute words of advice.

Melinda: What are you waiting for? You don’t want to miss it, do you?

Nicole: Whatever happens, I am on your side. Always.

Rafe: I know. Okay.

Nicole: Yeah.

Xander: I don’t get it. Abigail made a complete recovery, and now she’s living a full and normal life. What, you’re just giving up on sarah?

Kayla: No. No one is giving up on sarah. As I said to maggie, the damage to sarah’s brain is more severe than abigail’s was, so the treatment is undoubtably gonna be longer.

Xander: Be longer? Abigail was out for months.

Kayla: Well, with sarah, it could be a year or years.

Xander: Or it could be forever.

Kayla: Let’s not put that kind of timetable on it, okay? Not at this point.

Xander: So thanks to whatever was in that syringe, sarah may never be herself again? Is that what you’re saying?

Anna: That woman just called here hurling outrageous insults at me, then begged my husband, with whom she’s madly in love, to spring her from the hospital. And you still expect an apology from me?

Maggie: Hello. I’m sorry to interrupt. Harold let me in.

Tony: Oh, no, no. Maggie, hello. How’s sarah doing?

Maggie: Her test results came back, and I’m afraid the news is not very good.

Anna: Oh, don’t tell me. We’re going to be stuck forever with the reincarnation of that horrible renee dumonde?

[Sighs] I’m sorry, maggie. That was very insensitive of me. What’s happened to your daughter, it’s tragic. I know that. I can’t even imagine how worried you must be.

Maggie: Yes. I am.

Anna: And believe me, I thought sarah was a lovely young woman.

Tony: Well, don’t talk about her as if she’s in the past. She’s still very much alive, anna.

Anna: I know that. I just want maggie to understand that it’s not sarah that I hate. It’s that horrible witch, renee dumonde.

Tony: Sorry, um– please tell us what’s going on.

Maggie: Well, like I said, it’s not good. The damage to sarah’s brain is severe, and kayla is working on a treatment plan. But in the meantime, sarah is being discharged.

Anna: Well, that’s a relief, at least, right? I mean, you must be looking forward to having her home.

Maggie: I am. Except sarah refuses to come home with me. She considers this her home, and she only wants to be here. With you, tony.

Anna: No. No, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no–I mean… uh, that is–it’s a terrible, sad thing that sarah doesn’t want to come home with her own mother, but I’m sure you can understand, maggie, that tony and I can’t possibly entertain your request.

Tony: Damn it, anna. Could you not speak for me?

Anna: Don’t tell me you think this is a good idea, tony. My god.

Maggie: Tony, anna, there’s no need to argue about this, please. I wasn’t going to come here and ask either one of you if sarah could stay here. I know it’s not a viable solution.

Anna: Well, thank you. Then why did you come by?

Maggie: Well, I know it’s also not a great way to solve this problem. It would be a terrible imposition. But I am admittedly somewhat desperate.

Tony: Well, that’s understandable.

Maggie: And it’s all I can come up with for now, okay? So please feel free to say “no” and tell me if it’s an outrageous, unfair request.

Tony: Well, what is it, maggie? Tell us. What did you come up with?

Maggie: Tony, I was hoping that you would move in with us.

Kayla: Xander, don’T.

Abigail: Oh, no. It’s okay. I can handle it. Look, I am so sorry for everything that’s happened to my cousin, sarah. You have no idea how sorry, but I never would have known about the drug if gwen hadn’t used it on me first.

Xander: Don’t you dare blame this on gwen. It’s only because of your twisted revenge scheme on her that any of this happened. That drug never would have damaged sarah’s brain if you hadn’t been so determined to get back at gwen in the most savage way imaginable.

Abigail: Wait a minute. Gwen, dr. Rolf created the drug.

Xander: What’s your point? So what?

Abigail: Well, maybe he could create an antidote.

Anna: You want tony to live with you?

Maggie: I know it’s unorthodox, and it’s a terrible imposition, but tony, sarah is so fixated on you. And being in your presence is the only thing that seems to keep her calm.

Anna: So you want to use my husband as some sort of what? Therapy animal?

Tony: Anna!

Maggie: Anna, I’m sorry. I know this would affect you, too, but I just thought if tony agreed to it that you and he–you would be together a lot of the time, because I mean, he wouldn’t– he would only be with us for the evenings, and you know, whatever. The only alternative… is that I would have to commit sarah, and I can’T. I can’t do that to my daughter.

Tony: No. She’s been through enough already.

Anna: Haven’t we all.

Maggie: Look, I know what I’m asking is a tremendous favor to you both, but it would just be for a short time. Until the doctors can figure out the proper course of treatment. I honestly think that it’s the only way that– that sarah would agree to come home with me. Oh, god. I don’t know what else to do. I’m so worried about sarah. Please, tony, will you help my daughter?

Rafe: I can’t believe it.

Nicole: [Laughs] I can. I mean, the jurors could tell that you were being framed, and they can tell that you are a good and decent guy. And now, you’re a free man!

Rafe: Yeah, you know. Oh! We’re going home. See, I like the sound of that.

Nicole: Yeah. Yeah, and now, you can focus on putting the real bad guys behind bars.

Melinda: Would that include you, nicole?

Nicole: Me?

Melinda: Yeah. A little thing called witness tampering. I could still charge you with it.

Nicole: In a case where all the witnesses were lying? Go ahead. Try it.

Melinda: I wouldn’t be so smug if I were you. It has a way of coming back and biting you.

[Both chuckle]

Nicole: Wow. Some people just don’t know how to lose gracefully. Ah!

Rafe: Love you so much.

Nicole: [Laughs] Oh, my gosh.

Ava: Not guilty. No. No! No, this can’t be happening! No! No! No!

Sarah: What are you doing back here? I told you that I’m not going anywhere with you.

Maggie: Well, I’ve got good news for you.

Sarah: The only good news that I want to hear is that I’m going home to tony.

Maggie: Well, I’m afraid I’m not gonna be taking you to the dimera mansion.

Sarah: Then get out!

Maggie: Will you listen to me? I spoke to tony and I explained the situation and you’re still gonna be coming to live with me. But tony has agreed to live with us as well.

Anna: So much for our lobster.

Tony: I know this is difficult, anna.

Anna: Difficult? Try infuriating, horrifying, and mind-boggling.

Tony: How about trying to help a woman whose daughter survived a terrible trauma and rendered mentally ill? A woman who recently lost another daughter. I’m doing this for maggie.

Anna: Okay. You don’t have to yell.

Tony: Damn it. It’s only going to be temporary.

Anna: Right, and it would only be temporary to send sarah off to an institution where, instead of having her mother there to coddle her or you there to feed her delusions that you are the love of her live, there are doctors there trained to deal with mental illness.

Tony: Yes, but you heard what kayla said to maggie. That the institution can no longer take care of sarah, ’cause her condition is rare and complicated. You saw what happened when I had to drag her out of here just for simple medical tests. Can you imagine her reaction if she had to be institutionalized?

Anna: [Groans] It’s just not fair, tony. Asking you to do this? Asking us to do this? It’s too much.

Tony: Sweetheart. What if this was carrie… not knowing that you were her mother, believing she was some woman who died almost 40 years ago. Her recollection of her real life. Wouldn’t you move heaven and earth just to help her? I know you would. As difficult as this is and as infuriating and horrifying and mind-boggling, put yourself in maggie’s place. Can you do that for me? Please?

Kayla: I have been so busy, I didn’t even think of that.

Abigail: Well, it might not really be that great of an idea. We’re talking about the very eccentric, if not deranged wilhelm rolf here. He might not really be that interested in helping us find an antidote for somebody he doesn’t really give a damn about.

Kayla: Well, can you think of anybody that might be able to get through to him?

Abigail: He’s got a soft spot for chad. I can talk to him about it. Of course, he kind of has his hands full, because he’s getting ready to seduce leo stark.

Kayla: [Groans softly]

Xander: So because sarah got such a concentrated dose of the drug, kayla can’t tell how long it’ll take for her to recover if she ever will.

Gwen: That’s really tragic. How sad.

Xander: Well, there might be a bright side.

Gwen: Really?

Xander: Yeah, credit due to abigail. Yeah, despite your sister’s role in this whole debacle, she does seem to have come up with a possible solution.

Gwen: What’s that?

Xander: Rolf himself.

Gwen: Rolf?

Xander: Yeah. I mean, he invented the drug. Maybe he can come up with the antidote to counteract it.

Gwen: [Sighs] Yeah, well, I suppose that is possible.

Xander: I’m not gonna wait to find out. I’m going to statesville to talk to him. I was hoping you’d come with me.

Rafe: No, gabi. Of course seeing arianna off is way more important. Give her a kiss from uncle rafe for me, will you? Okay. No, we will celebrate the minute you get back. I promise. I love you, too, sis. Okay. Bye. Ah.

Nicole: I’d make a toast, but I think it’s pretty obvious what we’re celebrating.

Rafe: Yes, it is. You know, the last time we were here in this kitchen, when I was arrested, you know, I had asked you what you thought about starting a relationship. And, uh, you never really answered me.

Nicole: Well, there was a lot going on.

Rafe: True. Yep. Yeah. But now, here we are. Now, we’re back in the kitchen, so may I ask you again? What do you think about you and me?

[Soft dramatic music]

Gabi: I’m sorry. I can’t do this.

Belle: It’s like I have just woke up from this horrible nightmare.

Shawn: What did jake tell you?

Belle: That the devil morphed me into him to cause trouble for him and gabi. Well, he didn’t really tell me that, but we kind of figured out that’s what happened. Why won’t you look at me? Oh, god, there’s more, isn’t there?

Shawn: You know what? I think that you’ve probably dealt with enough today, so we should just–

Belle: No, please just tell me, what else did I do?

Shawn: Look, jake wasn’t the only person that you morphed into. You also morphed into ej.

Belle: Why?

Shawn: To get chad to think that this brother assaulted abigail.

Chad: You want me to blame the devil for framing ej? Who’s gonna believe that?

Kate: No one. Unless they hear a confession from the one person who is perfectly positioned to ensure that ej was found guilty.

Chad: You mean…

Kate: Yeah. His defense attorney. Belle brady.

Clyde: I don’t know what it is you think I did, ej.

Ej: It’s not what I think you did. It’s what I know you did. I just remembered you’re the son of a bitch who had me shot.

Kate: Okay, I’m no lawyer, but belle had the means and the opportunity to frame ej. First, the means. Almost everyone in salem has either heard or seen exactly what the devil can do when he takes possession of someone. The opportunity. She worked at dimera. She had access to ej’s computer. She had many chances to plant the evidence that would connect ej with sami’s kidnapper.

Chad: But you’re leaving out motive. Why would she want her client to go to prison?

Kate: Chad, she’s possessed by the devil, okay? What does he want? He wants chaos and misery. He wanted to drive a wedge between you and ej.

Chad: Which is why he morphed into ej and kissed abigail in front of me.

Kate: And which is why we will have no problem whatsoever convincing ej and belle herself that she’s the one who set it up.

Belle: What did I do when I was ej?

Shawn: It wasn’t you. It was the devil, all right?

Belle: What did I do, shawn?

Shawn: Before ej’s trial, you got abigail alone in a room, and you forced a kiss on her right before chad walked in.

Belle: So that’s why chad was so sure it happened, and ej insisted that he didn’t know what they were talking about.

Chad: It wasn’t ej.

Belle: It was me.

Chad: No, it was satan.

Belle: But why? What did he want?

Shawn: I guess he just wanted to make sure that chad would send ej to prison.

Clyde: You know, I think as someone who claims to be falsely convicted for the crime he’s in here for, you’d be a bit more careful about throwing around baseless accusations like that.

Ej: Oh, can you not insult my intelligence by denying what we both know is true?

Clyde: Like I said, ej, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Ej: For weeks now, I’ve been getting little flashes about that day in the woods.

Clyde: Flashes?

Ej: I couldn’t even see who it was. Until now when the whole memory came flooding back. You were there, and it was your man who pulled the trigger.

Clyde: Okay.

Ej: Okay, okay?

Ej: That’s your response? Okay?

Clyde: Okay, I was hoping you’d never remember it, but now you do. So what’s done is done, right?

Ej: Why did you give that order?

Clyde: Well, I didn’t exactly, my boy, miguel, he just got a little trigger-happy.

Ej: Yes, yes, very happy.

Clyde: Well, if it’s any consolation to you, he’s now fish food at the bottom of the lake of the ozarks. You know, good help is hard to find these days.

Ej: So this is just a joke to you?

Clyde: Is that too soon for you, ej? Okay. Ej, I’m sorry… for the misunderstanding…

Jake: Gabi, it’s me. Listen, I need to talk to you. I know you didn’t believe me when I told you I didn’t betray you, but I got proof now. It’s a long story, and it’s too crazy to leave on your voicemail so I’m coming to the office so we can talk face to face.

Johnny: Did I do something wrong?

Gabi: Nope. No, you didn’t do anything.

Johnny: Then I don’t see why this can’t happen.

Gabi: Because it can’t, like I told you before.

Johnny: Before that kiss, which was pretty incredible, if you ask me, and I can see that it affected you, too.

Gabi: Kate gave a million reasons why I shouldn’t trust you.

Johnny: Well, kate would know about being untrustworthy.

Gabi: She’s right though.

Johnny: Maybe, or maybe I’m the one who should be careful. Maybe I shouldn’t trust you.

Gabi: What is that supposed to mean?

Johnny: Look, I’ve known from the start that you and jake are using me to take over dimera.

Gabi: I offered to be your partner.

Johnny: Oh, you offered a hell of a lot more than that. Yeah, you made me think that you wanted to be with me in the bedroom so that you could have your way with me in the boardroom.

Gabi: That’s not true.

Johnny: I’m not even upset about it, okay? It’s who you are. It’s in your nature.

Gabi: And you think you know what’s in my nature?

Johnny: I think that you wouldn’t have become the successful businesswoman that you are if you didn’t leverage all your assets.

Gabi: I’m not like that.

Johnny: Really? So then you weren’t playing me just now when you kissed me?

Gabi: Maybe.

Johnny: Well, when I kissed you back, then and just now, that wasn’t part of a game, part of some plan. Business is not what I feel when I’m around you.

Gabi: And what do you feel?

Johnny: I want you, gabriella. And you may have pulled back, but I can see that you want me, too. So the question is, are you gonna take what you want? This is the sound of nature breathing.

Chanel: So did I tell you that I decided to drop my lawsuit against johnny?

Allie: Really?

Chanel: Yeah. You know, your brother’s letting tr recast my part and yours, too. They’re tearing up our contracts.

Allie: Well, that’s good.

Chanel: I’m just ready to put this whole thing behind me, the marriage, the movie, the devil.

Allie: I’m sorry johnny hurt you, dupree.

Chanel: Thanks, horton. But I don’t wanna focus on him right now.

Allie: What do you wanna focus on?

Gabi: I don’t know what it is, but a part of me finds it almost impossible to resist you.

Gabi: Oh, you know what? I have learned in the past that it’s not good for me to give in to temptations whenever I play with fire. I’m usually the one that gets burned, so…

Johnny: You think I’m gonna burn you?

Gabi: You know, I think you and I should just stick to business.

Chad: It’s just not right, kate. I mean, belle already feels terrible for what she did so for me to pin my sins on her–

Kate: Come on, you’re not pinning them on her. You’re pinning them on the prince of darkness. And, actually, you know, an argument could be made that he’s the one who tempted you to screw with your brother in the first place. It’s practically biblical.

Chad: That’s a stretch.

Kate: No, it’s not a stretch. Listen to me. The devil, he wanted ej in prison. He used you to make it happen. I think actually he would like some credit. And my plan ensures that he gets it.

Belle: I hurt so many people I care about.

Shawn: Hey, you weren’t in control of your actions. Everybody knows that.

Belle: Ej hired me to represent him, to save his life, and instead, I’m the reason he’s behind bars.

Shawn: It wasn’t you, belle.

Belle: Even so, I can’t help but feel responsible. I just don’t think I could live with myself if something happened to him in that hellhole.

Ej: Do you know what you’ve done to me? You took years from my life. Dr. Rolf and my sister kristen brought me back. But I was barely alive, trapped in a body that couldn’t move. My recovery was agonizing and excruciatingly slow.

Clyde: Yeah, well, I’m not saying you didn’t have it rough.

Clyde: You can’t blame me for your crappy love life.

Ej: I couldn’t be the husband she needed so I pushed her away into the arms of another man.

Ej: She was my light. And I didn’t want to infect her with the bitterness and anger that had consumed me, all because of the bullet your henchman put in me. You took everything that was good in my life and left nothing but misery.

Ciara: No, not yet. And, actually, we were wondering if you can answer that question for us.

Belle: Do you see anything that I don’t?

Shawn: There’s no marks there, belle. The devil’s gone. Your dad made sure of that. Where you going?

Belle: I’m gonna go to the prison and tell ej what happened.

Shawn: What, right now?

Belle: Why wait?

Shawn: Because you just went through hell, and ej’s not going anywhere. Look, I’m just saying, it can wait till tomorrow.

Belle: I’m not gonna be able to sleep. Maybe I’m not responsible for what I did when I was possessed, but I’m certainly responsible for what I do now.

Shawn: You’re gonna try to fix this.

Belle: I put my client in prison, so I’m gonna do everything I can to get him out.

Ej: You said your parole hearing was moved up to this afternoon.

Clyde: Yeah, so?

Ej: You sounded so confident that the board would let you out. I wonder how they would feel about your rehabilitation after I tell them about your role in my shooting.

Clyde: You wouldn’t do that.

Ej: Wouldn’t I?

Clyde: Hold on. You do not want to rat me out.

Ej: No, I really do. And I have 2,705 reasons why.

Clyde: What’s that number?

Ej: That’s the number of days since I took that bullet. And every single day that I was conscious, I thought about what I would do to that bastard that left me for dead in that park. Now I finally get that chance.

Clyde: Hold on, man. You wanna think twice before you rat me out in front of the parole board.

Ej: Yeah, why’s that?

Clyde: Because if you cost me my chance of freedom, I’m gonna be right back here with you in our cozy little cell, in a very bad mood.

Ej: But the past isn’t dead and buried, weston. In fact, for me, it’s still very much alive.

Chad: You and I both know that ej isn’t the one that kidnapped sami. Lucas is.

Kate: So?

Chad: So the truth doesn’t matter anymore?

Kate: What matters is that you have three choices. You can either throw my son, lucas, under the bus, you can take the fall for everything that happened, or you can pin it all on the guy with the horns and the pitchfork. That’s your call.

Chad: Is she resting?

Shawn: No, actually, you just missed her. She just went to statesville prison to visit your brother.

Belle: Ej.

Ej: Belle!

Belle: I’m fine, are you?

Ej: Yes, but I was worried about you. My mother was here, and she told me everything.

Belle: Everything?

Ej: Is it true? Were you possessed by the devil?

Ciara: So at my sonogram appointment, the doctor printed out the sex of the baby and put it in this envelope, sealed.

Ben: And after we discussed it for a while, we decided to wait.

Ciara: Uh-huh, but we knew that that was gonna be hard, so we gave it to my brother so we wouldn’t be tempted.

Allie: Okay, but shawn gave it back?

Ben: Well, after belle got possessed, that kind of changed things.

Chanel: Oh, yeah, we know. I saw her at the dimera mansion. Her eyes were all freaky and glowy.

Ben: Yeah, that was probably pretty–

Chanel: Intense.

Ben: Intense, yeah.

Chanel: Yeah.

Ciara: Yeah, anyway, belle is okay now, thank god, but while the devil was in her, it took a peek at the envelope.

Allie: He opened the envelope?

Ciara: Mm-hmm, that’s right, which is why it is no longer sealed.

Allie: Okay, I can’t believe I’m even asking this, but why would the devil care if your baby’s a boy or girl?

Ben: The truth is, we don’t know why, but the devil had designs on our baby.

Allie: Designs?

Ciara: He wanted to take our baby.

Chanel: Oh, god, that’s so scary.

Ciara: Yeah, but he’s gone now and hopefully for good this time.

Gabi: What are you doing here?

Jake: Oh, what am I–we’re broken up for, what, five minutes, and you’re already doing it with somebody else?

Gabi: It’s been longer than five minutes. And what’s it to you? You looked at me in the eye, you told me you loved me, and then you stabbed me in the back?

Jake: Okay, you didn’t get my message.

Gabi: What message?

Jake: The message that I left you where I said I didn’t do any of that stuff. That I have proof!

Gabi: What are you talking about?

Jake: I know what happened, gabi.

Gabi: Yeah, so do I. You stabbed me in the back so you could be ceo of dimera.

Jake: No, you don’t understand, that wasn’t me you heard talking to maggie, it was somebody else!

Gabi: Who was it?

Jake: It was the devil.

Gabi: The devil made you do it, that is your defense?

Jake: I didn’t say the devil made me do it. The devil did it all by himself.

Gabi: Okay, what exactly are you saying?

Jake: I’m saying that it’s satan, or lucifer, whatever the hell you wanna call him! Okay, satan stole maggie’s phone and sent me that text message. He drew up the documents that made it look like I stole your dimera shares. He made the deal with maggie.

Gabi: I heard you, jake.

Jake: Yes, because that’s what he wanted you to hear. He morphed into me, okay? So that you would overhear the conversation, and you would you think I betrayed you.

Gabi: You must think I’m really gullible, huh? The devil left marlena at christmas.

Jake: Yeah, now he’s in somebody else. My a1c stayed here,

Allie: So, you’re saying that you want us to tell you the sex of your baby?

Ciara: Well, not yet.

Ben: We were thinking that maybe we’d have one of those gender reveal parties, and maybe you girls could make us the cake.

Chanel: Oh, like the ones that you cut into that’s either pink or blue?

Ciara: Mm-hmm, exactly that. Do you think you guys could do that?

Allie: Yeah, we would love to do that.

Ciara: Wow, okay, great, amazing. Just please promise to not tell us once you open the envelope.

Ben: Yeah, we just wanna be surprised like everybody else.

Allie: Okay

Chanel: All right. Ooh, this is so exciting, I like this. You don’t get a lot of top secret missions in the baking biz.

Allie: Yeah, chanel likes a little bit of drama in her life.

Allie: Okay, well, we will make sure that no one but us knows if your baby is a boy or girl.

Chane: Not until both of you cut into that cake.

Gabi: Okay, I’ll play along. Who did the devil go into?

Johnny: It was my aunt belle.

Gabi: Belle is possessed?

Jake: Belle was possessed.

Johnny: It’s true. She knocked me over the head, tried to kill my grandmother.

Gabi: What?

Johnny: Yeah, she was choking my grandma marlena, squeezing the life out of her. Her eyes were like glowing. Weird.

Gabi: My god, how long has this been going on?

Johnny: I guess the devil jumped into her on christmas at my grandma’s exorcism.

Gabi: Poor belle.

Johnny: Look, man, I had no idea she was doing any of this to you.

Jake: Still didn’t stop you from you taking advantage of the situation, now, did it?

Johnny: Oh, like you’ve never taken advantage of anyone.

Jake: The hell’s that supposed to mean, pal?

Johnny: Look, I know you and gabi were using me, stringing the kid along, using him for his shares. But as I was just telling her, I’m willing to forgive and forget.

Jake: Is that right?

Johnny: In fact, we were just starting to kiss and make up when you walked in.

Jake: You little son of a–

Gabi: Johnny, can you please give jake and I two minutes, please, alone?

Gabi: So this was all belle?

Jake: Yeah, maggie’s phone was in belle’s bag. The stefan document was on belle’s laptop.

Gabi: So you didn’t do any of this?

Jake: No, gabi, I didn’t betray you. And I never would. Sure as hell didn’t take you very long to betray me though.

Belle: You put your faith in me to defend you. I convinced you not to run, and I failed you.

Ej: You were possessed by the devil; how could that possibly be your fault?

Belle: You don’t understand. I am the reason that your trial fell apart.

Ej: Chad was the one who lied on the stand.

Belle: But he only did that because of me.

Ej: What do you mean?

Belle: I guess your mom didn’t tell you everything.

Ej: About what?

Belle: Okay, you remember how chad and abigail swore that you kissed her at the courthouse?

Ej: And I told you it wasn’t me.

Belle: No, I know that. I believed you, and now I know that it wasn’t you. Because it was me.

Chad: Johnny told me everything so I know that it was belle, not ej, that kissed abby.

Shawn: Yeah, well, it was, and it wasn’T.

Chad: Because she doesn’t remember anything.

Shawn: I mean, she doesn’t remember the kiss, she doesn’t remember anything that she did to hurt anybody. I hated breaking the news to her.

Chad: I can’t even imagine what she’s going through.

Shawn: I mean, she knows that it’s not her fault, but still, I mean, she’s still dealing with the guilt.

Chad: Well, will you please tell her that I don’t blame her for anything? It’s actually why I stopped by.

Shawn: No, I’m sorry, I don’t have anything to share about his case.

Kate: Yeah, no, I understand. I know it’s been designated a cold case. That’s why victor and i hired a private detective to search for him.

Shawn: Well, I hope you get some answers.

Kate: Yeah, I do too. Look, would it be possible for you to send over a copy of philip’s police report?

Shawn: Yeah, sure, yeah, when I get back to the station I can email it to you.

Kate: Look, shawn, I know that you have a lot going on with belle and all, but could you possibly do that now?

Shawn: Yeah, no problem. I mean, I have to check in there anyway, so I’ll email it to you asap.

Kate: Oh, you don’t know how much I appreciate that. Thanks.

Shawn: Good luck. Well, I got to head back down to the station.

Chad: Do you actually mind if I wait here for belle? I’d love to be able to tell her how I feel in person.

Belle: I don’t remember any of this. So I can only assume that he sensed that chad was having a change of heart about testifying against you.

Ej: Hmm. And what would turn chad against me faster than convincing him I was after abigail? But how did he–

Belle: Please don’t ask me to explain any of this. But somehow he morphed me into you–

Ej: And then forcibly kissed abigail.

Belle: Just in time for chad to walk in on it.

Ej: I got to say, if I were chad, I would’ve wanted me locked up, too.

Chad: Okay, I plugged the flash drive into the computer. What do I do next?

Kate: Just wait. It’s gonna automatically upload the paper trail that lucas put on ej’s computer, and it’s gonna look like that’s where the file was created.

Chad: I still can’t believe I’m planting evidence on a computer to frame somebody for planting evidence on a computer.

Kate: You’re framing the devil. I don’t think he’s gonna be offended.

Chad: Well, it still feels wrong.

[Computer beeps] Okay, it’s done.

Kate: Okay, good, good.

[Cell phone beeps] And shawn, he just sent through the police file on philip. So he’ll probably be going back to the house. You need to get out of there fast before anyone realizes why you really stuck around.

Gabi: Jake, I–

Jake: You were about to have sex with him when I walked in right there on your desk.

Gabi: I thought–

Gabi: Everything we’ve been through, I just–

Jake: You thought wrong! I didn’t do any of that stuff! And what the hell? We were partners in everything!

Chad: Are you sure that belle’s gonna confess when she finds out it’s on her computer?

Kate: Of course she’s gonna be horrified when she finds out what she did while she was possessed. But as always, belle will do the right thing.

Chad: Well, then it won’t be long until ej’s free.

Belle: I think that we can use this information for your appeal. We can argue ineffective assistance of counsel.

Ej: My mother had the same idea. And as I told her, I doubt the court will be swayed by the argument that my attorney was possessed by the devil.

Belle: Well, we can at least make the attempt. I’m gonna file your appeal as soon as I get home.

Ej: Thank you, belle. Can I ask you something?

Belle: Of course.

Ej: My mother said that you were possessed at christmas. So that means the whole time you were representing me, all those conversations we had where you said you believed in me, it wasn’t you?

Belle: Oh, no, that was me. I think. I mean, I remember all of that.

Ej: What does that mean?

Belle: I don’t know. All I know is I need to get you out of here. And I will.

[Cell phone beeps]

Ej: What is it?

Belle: Looks like you’re getting a new cellmate. Clyde weston just made parole.

Ben: Dad, did you escape from statesville again?

Clyde: Didn’t have to bust out this time; you’re looking at a genuine parolee.

Ben: What?

Ciara: You made parole?

Clyde: Yes, ma’am, on the condition that I have a roof over my head, living with a responsible person. And I figure who could be more responsible than the soon-to-be-parents of my baby grandchild? By the way, what are we having, a boy or a girl?

Johnny: So you two are together now?

Chanel: So what if we are?

Johnny: You’re right. So what? We all have what we want, right? Chanel, I heard you’re dropping the lawsuit.

Chanel: Yeah. Yeah, because you agreed to take us out of your movie. Tr said that you already recast our parts.

Johnny: It’s a shame. You would’ve been great.

Kate: Yes, of course. So what’s this about? I have an important meeting. I don’t have much time.

Gabi: This won’t take very long. You’re fired.

[Knocking on door]

Jake: Yo, hey.

Ben: Jake, what’s going on?

Jake: Did you talk to susan? Did she confirm that johnny’s possessed or what?

Ben: I’m sorry, man, we meant to call you earlier, but there was–

Ciara: Yeah, there’s been a lot going on, including an exorcism.

Jake: What?

Ben: Yeah, dr. Evans called last night, and apparently she and john were finally able to get rid of the devil for good.

Jake: So we were right. The devil was in johnny.

Ben: We were wrong. The devil was in belle.

Shawn: How you feeling?

Belle: Oh, I have a splitting headache, and I don’t know why.

Shawn: What do you remember about last night?

Belle: Not much. I remember you taking me to the car and driving and then putting me to bed. Were my parents there?

Shawn: Your father performed an exorcism.

Susan: All right, you see, we’re gonna get your conviction overturned, okay?

Ej: How?

Susan: Well, I think it’s what they call “ineffective assistance of counsel,” which means that your lawyer screwed up big time and gave you pathetic, pathetic defense.

Ej: I know what it means, mother, but it’s not true. Belle is an excellent attorney. She gave me superb advice that I failed to heed at every turn.

Susan: Oh, well, belle may be a fine, fine lawyer but the devil sure as heck isn’T.

Belle: So you’re saying that my head hurts because johnny had to knock me out? And then I was sedated and tied to a bed?

Shawn: Yes, that was only to keep everybody safe until your dad got back to salem so he could remove satan from your body.

Belle: And all of this started at the exorcism?

Shawn: That’s when the devil jumped over to you.

Belle: So I have been possessed since christmas. Did you have any idea?

Shawn: No, no, I had none. All right, last night the devil said something about keeping a low profile until he’s finished his work.

Belle: His work?

Shawn: I think he was just biding his time until my sister gave birth.

Belle: Oh, my god. Ben and ciara. So all this time, I have been plotting to steal their baby without even knowing it.

Ben: It turns out that belle was the one who was possessed.

Jake: Doesn’t make sense. We were convinced it was johnny.

Ben: I know we were, but then susan went and confronted the guy and she said she felt nothing, no bad vibes, nothing.

Jake: Okay, I sure as hell got bad vibes, like, a lot of them. Look, I know susan’s been there for you guys with her visions and whatnot, but she’s wrong on this. I’m telling you. I am convinced the devil was in johnny and working to tear me apart from the woman I love.

Kate: Is this a joke?

Gabi: I’m dead serious.

Kate: You can’t fire me.

Gabi: I just did. And if you’re wondering why, it’s because you’re a disloyal bitch.

Kate: Excuse me?

Gabi: You made your feelings clear, and I’m doing the same. I can’t have somebody working under me whom I can’t trust.

Kate: Okay, look, we’ll just discuss this over lunch because as I said, I have a very important meeting. I’m in the middle of a negotiation for a new acquisition–

Gabi: Johnny will take it over.

Kate: Ha! Now I know you’re joking.

Gabi: No, not even a little. You’re done, kate. So why don’t you go back, pack your stuff, and get the hell out? It’s my 4:05, the-show-must-go-on,

Gabi: What are you waiting for? I said leave.

Kate: Fine, I’ll go. But the minute I walk out that door, you’re screwed.

Gabi: I’ll be fine.

Kate: Mm-hmm. Well, to be a successful ceo, gabi, you need allies. And right now there’s no one here that you can count on. Chad hates you. Ej’s in prison. You blew it with jake, which was absolutely predictable. You are all alone.

Gabi: I’m not alone. I have johnny.

Kate: For the moment.

Gabi: What does that mean?

Kate: Isn’t it obvious? I mean, he ousted his uncle, he blew up his sister’s engagement, he dumped his wife at their wedding reception. How long do you think it’s going to be until he turns on you?

Chad: The person I saw kissing abigail was belle? How is that possible?

Johnny: Well, technically, it wasn’t belle. It was the devil. She’s been possessed since christmas. Apparently, when my uncle eric, was performing the exorcism on my grandmother, satan jumped into my aunt.

Chad: My god. And john did the exorcism this time?

Johnny: Yeah, yeah. He got rid of the devil for good, but before that, belle confessed what she did to abigail. Other people heard it, too. I mean, ask shawn if you don’t believe me.

Chad: So belle morphed into ej so I could see him make a play for my wife, why?

Johnny: Well, I asked satan that myself. And he said it was to rip apart the family, turn brother against brother.

Chad: And he knew that it would work because of ej’s history with abby.

Johnny: Look, I know that my dad has done some bad things, including kidnapping my mother, but he did not force himself on abigail. Just thought you might wanna know that.

[Tense music]

Ej: Oof, poor belle, that must’ve been terrifying for her.

Susan: And nobody would’ve known that satan snuck into her if it wasn’t for yours truly.

Ej: Is she all right?

Susan: Oh, well, she will be. I mean, mr. John black and dr. Marlena evans, they are taking very good care of your daughter.

Ej: They did an exorcism?

Susan: Well, mr. John black, he sure knows what he’s doing. I mean, he is an expert exorcist. Try saying that three times.

Ej: And you’re sure it was a success?

Susan: Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, the devil is back in hell where he belongs, and belle brady, she’s gonna be just fine.

Belle: I just can’t believe that I’ve been plotting to steal ben and ciara’s baby. That’s our niece, our nephew. What? What is it?

Shawn: What you just said reminded me of something. A few weeks ago, ben and ciara, they gave me an envelope with a printout of a sonogram that contained the baby’s gender and, I mean, they gave it to me because they wanted to be surprised, so I told them I would hold on to it.

Belle: And?

Shawn: And if the devil was after their baby, don’t you think he would want to know what’s in that envelope?

Belle: Well, where’s the envelope?

Shawn: I put it right here for safekeeping.

Jake: All right, look, it’s just all these bizarre things started happening, and every single one of them benefitted johnny and messed with me and gabi.

Ciara: What kind of bizarre things?

Jake: The meeting that i that I supposedly had with maggie kiriakis where gabi overheard me saying I was using her, right? Or how about the documents that I supposedly signed trying to steal gabi’s shares out from under her? Or how about the text messages that maggie, again, supposedly sent saying that we were working behind gabi’s back?

Ciara: And you think that johnny is behind all these things?

Jake: Look, I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how any of this could’ve happened, right? And, like, how could gabi and I be so happy one minute and then just done the next? And the moment you guys told me that johnny could be possessed, that was the moment all this started making sense. It’s the only thing that made sense. It had to be johnny. We treat our faces to the best skin care.

Ej: You want me to argue that I deserve a new trial because my attorney was possessed by the devil?

Susan: Mm-hmm.

Ej: The judge will never buy it.

Susan: Well, why not? It’s the truth.

Ej: Because it will be seen as a stunt, a desperate attempt by a desperate man to get one over on the court.

Susan: But you’re not a desperate man. You’re an innocent man. And there’s gotta be something that someone can do to clear your name.

Chad: My god. Father. I sent ej to prison for something thought he did to abigail, and it wasn’t him.

[Line trilling]

Kate: Hello?

Chad: Hi, I need to see you as soon as possible.

Kate: Oh, I’m right here. I guess you heard the big news. Gabi fired me.

Chad: No, I hadn’T.

Kate: Ah, it’s fine. Two more days there and I would’ve quit anyway.

Chad: Gabi and johnny are going to run the company into the ground. I mean, it’s a joke. Gabi in charge and my nephew on the board. Speaking of johnny…

Kate: Yeah, what’s that?

Chad: You should sit down.

Demon johnny: Poor chad. He must be feeling so guilty right now. All because I told him that the person he saw locking lips with abigail wasn’t ej, it was belle brady. I’ve already convinced half these idiots that belle’s been wreaking havoc this whole time and not johnny dimera. It should be a breeze to get the rest of them to buy it, too.

[Laughs]

[Tense music]

Johnny: Well, now that I’ve planted the evidence to make belle look devilish, I can finally satisfy my curiosity about the bun in ciara’s oven. Are we having a boy or a girl?

Surprise, surprise. That’ll work.

Belle: I must’ve opened the envelope. I swear though I don’t remember doing that.

Shawn: Because it wasn’t you, all right, it was the devil. He must’ve been curious about what the baby’s gender was for whatever sick plan that he had.

Belle: But still–

Shawn: But now he’s gone. Okay, he’s gone.

Belle: I still think that you need to go and tell ciara. Really, and I think you need to do it right now.

Shawn: Are you sure that you’re gonna be okay alone?

Belle: Yeah, I’ll be fine.

Shawn: Okay, I’ll be back.

[Soft music]

Ciara: You’re right. All those things did benefit johnny, but belle still could’ve been behind them. I’m thinking johnny was in the right place at the right time. He took advantage of the rift belle created and tried to move in on your girlfriend and your family’s company.

Jake: So johnny’s a user and a jerk but not the devil?

Ciara: Exactly.

Jake: You could be right. But I gotta be sure.

Ben: Where are you going?

Jake: Getting to the bottom of this once and for all.

Ciara: How is belle doing?

Shawn: She’s fine physically, but she’s a little concerned about the things she might’ve done to hurt the people that she loves, which is why I’m here. Look, you guys remember the envelope, the sonogram that you gave me because you didn’t want to know the gender of your baby?

Ciara: You opened it?

Shawn: No. The devil opened it.

Ciara: Oh, my god.

Shawn: Yeah. Listen, I know that you two want to keep this a surprise, but I’m trying to keep belle calm, so is there any way that you can–

Ciara: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, just leave it here with us.

Shawn: Thank you. Look, I gotta get back to belle. I know this is gonna make her heart feel good to know that you’re okay.

Ciara: Give her all of our love, okay?

Jake: Look, I’m really sorry to bother you. I know you just went through a pretty terrible experience.

Belle: Yeah, it’s fine.

Jake: Well, listen, the last thing I want to have you do is relive any of it, but I do have a personal stake in what happened.

Belle: What do you mean?

Jake: Well, I’m trying to get to the bottom of something. And I need your help. See, if it turns out that my suspicions are correct, then I can help you out, too.

Johnny: Good morning, madame ceo. How’s your first day on the job?

Gabi: Well, I fired kate, so I’d say it’s off to an excellent start.

Johnny: Didn’t you used to be friends?

Gabi: Yeah, before jake and before she backstabbed me at the shareholders’ meeting. Why, do you have a problem with me giving her the ax?

Johnny: No, no, not at all. You’re the boss.

Gabi: You know, she thinks I can’t do this job and that I’m bad for the company. If I let her stay, I’d be worried she could turn on me at any time.

Johnny: Well, you shouldn’t have to work with anybody you can’t trust.

Gabi: Agreed. Which brings me to my next point. Johnny, can I trust you?

Kate: So it wasn’t ej who kissed your wife?

Chad: Right, it was belle, who was possessed at the time, obviously. Apparently, the devil admitted it last night before the exorcism.

Kate: Oh, my–I… okay, so why did satan make a pass at your wife?

Chad: According to johnny, it was to turn one brother against the other. And it worked. At ej’s trial, I was gonna testify that i planted the evidence against him, and then the devil made me change my mind.

Kate: Oh, my god, I’m sorry. Seriously, chad, it’s awful.

Chad: I was gonna set ej free, and I got played.

Kate: Look, you just have to take it easy.

Chad: I knew it wasn’t him that kidnapped sami. I knew that it was lucas, and i only helped with the frame-up because I wanted him to lose his job, but then when I heard that he was gonna get ten years, I couldn’t keep quiet, and I sure as hell can’t keep quiet now.

Kate: What you have to do is just like slow down–

Chad: My brother is serving a sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. What I need to do, kate, is make it right.

Ej: Mother, I love that you care so much, but as an experienced attorney, I can tell you that this devil possession argument is a total waste of time. I’m afraid it’s going to be a while before I get out of here.

Clyde: Well, if it isn’t my favorite cellmate? And who might this lovely lady be?

Ej: This is my mother, susan banks.

Susan: Elvis, elvis, you gotta listen to me. You stay away from that man. I mean, far, far, far away.

Susan: He’s done terrible things.

Ej: This is prison, mother. Everyone in here has done terrible things. But if I’m going to survive in here, I need someone to have my back.

Ej: [Sighs] What?

Susan: Clyde weston is hiding something from you. I can just feel it.

Ej: Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.

Susan: Well, I was gonna go back and see roger, but I’ll stay if you need me, honey.

Ej: That’s very sweet, but I can take care of myself.

Susan: Oh, I know you can. You’re a big boy. And I know that you’re gonna find a way to beat this bum rap, and get yourself out of this cursed place, and get back to your beautiful life. Oh, son. Oh, I just love you so much.

Ej: Mother.

Susan: Oh, oxygen. Gotcha, all right. I’m gonna go now.

Chad: I can’t let ej stay in prison knowing what I know. I have to get him out.

Kate: [Sighs] So what are you gonna do?

Chad: The same thing that I was gonna do before, say that I planted the evidence without implicating lucas. And, yes, I know that I’m gonna get charged with perjury.

Kate: And then you’re going to end up behind bars, too. Come on, chad, I know that you feel awful. I know that you do. But you’re gonna feel a million times worse if you’re separated from your wife and children. And, besides, honestly, looking at it, I mean, if the situation was reversed, do you really think that ej would do the same thing?

Chad: It doesn’t matter. What’s right is right. I have to call trask.

Kate: Okay, just wait, just wait. I think there may be another way.

Jake: See, I’m wondering if it was you who morphed into me for that meeting that i supposedly had with maggie.

Belle: When was it?

Jake: February 2nd.

Belle: I think I was at the prison with ej that day.

Jake: What time?

Belle: After noon.

Jake: All right, well, the meeting with maggie was in the morning, so, I mean, if you can prove that you were somewhere else at that time, then maybe we can prove that it wasn’t you you who morphed into me, that it was johnny.

Belle: Okay. Well, let me check my calendar.

Jake: Thanks.

Belle: What the…

Jake: What, it’s not your phone?

Belle: No. “If found, return to maggie kiriakis.”

Jake: Oh, my god. Maggie supposedly sent me a message after that meeting that made it look like we were conspiring behind gabi’s back. She swears she didn’t send it.

Belle: Yeah. It looks like it was me.

Jake: Look, belle, I’m sorry, I know this is all very upsetting to you, but if this is true, you have no idea what this could mean for me and gabi.

Johnny: You don’t trust me?

Gabi: Well, kate reminded me that you’ve stabbed a lot of people in the back, including your uncle, your sister, and your wife. So how do I know you won’t do the same thing to me, that you won’t use me, and get ahead, and once you do, cut me loose?

Johnny: I would never do that.

Gabi: Given what you’ve already done, I’m a tad hesitant to just take your word on it. So my question is, what is it you really want?

Ben: Guess I should probably put that away, huh?

Ciara: Wait, wait, wait. Before you do, should we look?

Gabi: Do you want to be ceo of dimera?

Johnny: Maybe, someday. I told you that.

Gabi: No, no, no, you told jake that when we were plotting behind his back.

Johnny: Look. I’m gonna be tied up with my movie for a long time. And even if I wasn’t, you’re the ceo of dimera. I kind of helped with that, you know?

Gabi: Yeah, maybe that was part of a bigger plan. Pretend you’re satisfied with a seat on the board, but really you’re plotting behind my back to get rid of me so you can take over.

Johnny: You’re very suspicious.

Gabi: Oh, I’m sorry, did I hurt your feelings?

Johnny: No, not at all. Because I can completely understand where all this is coming from. I mean, you loved a man, you trusted him, and he lied to you. He used you. He stabbed you in the back. I’m not jake.

Gabi: You hurt people you supposedly care about.

Johnny: Yeah, yeah. Look, I turned on chad because I wanted you to have this job. I spoke up about allie because I thought that her fiancé had a right to know that she slept with my wife. As for chanel, she and I would’ve never, ever lasted. She wants my sister, always has.

Gabi: If you knew that, then why’d you marry her?

Johnny: We were in italy. We got swept up in the moment, you know? As soon as we got back home, I realized she wasn’t the woman for me. You are.

Jake: I swear I did not sign that petition to steal gabi’s shares.

Belle: You know, I’m dimera’s general counsel, and I keep a copy of all the company’s legal documents on my laptop. Let’s just take a look.

Jake: What, what is it?

Belle: I created that petition. I must’ve forged your signature on it. Jake, I’m so sorry, I really–i don’t remember doing that. And I think it’s pretty clear that johnny wasn’t the one causing all those problems for you and gabi. It was me.

Jake: All right, well, look, it wasn’t your fault, right? And, honestly, you’ve done me a huge favor. Now I can go to gabi and prove to her that I didn’t betray her.

Belle: Glad I could help.

Jake: Look, I know this was not easy for you. And I need you to know I’m really grateful. I hope you feel better. I’m gonna take this back to maggie.

Belle: Yeah, just tell her I’m so, so, so, so sorry.

Jake: Belle. You’re one of the good ones. You got nothing to be sorry about.

Clyde: So that was your mama? Not exactly what I expected.

Ej: She’s a bit eccentric, but she loves me very much.

Clyde: She don’t think much of me though.

Ej: She’s just protective of ben and ciara, especially now that they’re expecting.

Clyde: Well, I’m the first to admit I wasn’t much of a daddy to ollie growing up, but, you know, we worked things out. He knows he’s got nothing to fear from me anymore. And neither do you, by the way, no matter what your mama says.

Ej: You heard that, huh?

Clyde: Yeah, but it don’t matter none; I’m in a very good mood.

Ej: I’m guessing the call with your attorney went well?

Clyde: That’s right. I may be getting out of here sooner than anyone expected.

Ben: Do you wanna look?

Ciara: Do you wanna look?

Ben: I guess I should probably put this thing away somewhere where we’re not gonna be so tempted.

Ben: I have no idea, but I will figure it out.

Susan: Oh, well, the devil is gone now, and your baby’s safe. So my work here is done. And I just can’t wait to go see roger and get back to memphis.

Belle: Jake dimera stopped by. Apparently, your sister and her husband aren’t the only couple I’ve tried to cause trouble for.

Johnny: I don’t want anything but you, gabi. We’ve already gotten everything we want. And we got it by working together. And together we can do so much more. Clearly, you’re attracted to me. I know when you were with jake, you were fighting it, but he’s out of the picture now. I’m getting divorced. We’re both single, available, hot. I think it’s time for us to–

Gabi: To what? To take this relationship to the next level?

Johnny: Yeah.

Gabi: And what level is that, johnny?

Kate: Well, i didn’t mention everyone. I mean, someone’s going to have to take the fall, just not you.

Chad: Okay, I’ll bite. Who?

Kate: I say we pin the crime on the devil.

Ej: You’re getting out of here?

Clyde: I got my hearing moved up. I’m before the parole board this afternoon, which means I may have spent my last night in prison.

Ej: You seem confident.

Clyde: Oh, man, I’m looking forward to a fresh start. It’s gonna feel real good walking out of here knowing that I paid for all my crimes.

[Tense music]

Sonny: Well, it would have to be somebody who, you know, leo’s already expressed interest in. You know, somebody who wouldn’t have to sell himself.

Chad: Why are you guys looking at me like that? What do you want me to do?

Will: Something along the lines of making leo’s wildest dreams comes true.

Chad: And how am I supposed to do that?

Sonny: By going to bed with him.

Will: He’s thinking about it.

Chad: Thinking–thinking– thinking it over. How about plan b?

Sonny: Uh, what’s plan b?

Chad: I shoot him in cold blood in horton town square. That way, I can spend the rest of my life in prison, which will be vastly better than what you two are offering.

Will: All right, come on. You were in a bed with him in phoenix. That didn’t kill you.

Chad: You know the james bond movie when he wakes up with a tarantula next to his pillow? That was better than waking up next to him. My eyes! My eyes!

Sonny: You said you’d help us.

Chad: That was before the two of you were out of your ever-loving minds!

Craig: So you want me to go after kayla johnson’s job?

Leo: You’d be great at it.

Craig: Yeah, well, so is she.

Leo: Babe, think about it. You just said that because of nancy’s big mouth, you’re probably gonna lose your job in new york.

Craig: Okay. We’re gonna establish some ground rules right now. We do not trash nancy. We just don’T.

Leo: She’s trying to get you fired.

Craig: She is in pain, a lot of pain.

Leo: Well, I’m sorry, but I think she’s overreacting horribly to this turn of events.

Craig: Oh, well, her overreacting must really bother you, you being so buttoned down and everything.

Leo: Well, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to start a fight. I’m thinking about you. Craig, you know I would be happy to spend the rest of my life alone with you on a desert island. But your work is central to who you are. You’re a healer.

Craig: [Sighs] I can be a healer without taking kayla’s job.

Leo: You wouldn’t be taking it. If she refuses to fire dr. Beelzebub evans, she’d be losing it on her own. And as that was your former job, it’d be like “once more into the breach.” Craig. You can’t fight this. It’s fate.

Kayla: And I’m telling you that dr. Evans is completely recovered and fully competent. You know, I’m on duty right now. Do you think that we could talk about this in the morning? Mr. Hartley, I think you know me well enough to know that I do not take well to threats. Good night.

Abigail: Aunt kayla? Are you all right?

Kayla: Ah, abigail, yes. I thought I got off that stupid island that I would come back here to a little bit of sanity.

Abigail: I heard–I heard you talking about marlena.

Kayla: Yeah. It turns out that the board, egged on by their chairman, mr. Burns, is trying to get her fired. That woman has been through so much.

Marlena: You want me to leave?

John: You have to. So please, doc, just you go on downstairs and stay with johnny until this is all over.

Marlena: Belle is my daughter. There’s no way that I would leave her at a time like this.

John: Would you think about this? We now know that when eric performed the exorcism, yeah, he drove the devil out of you, but it took over belle because she was in the room. Now, he’s come after you twice. I don’t want to give him a third chance.

Marlena: Why do you think that he would try again?

John: I know that he won’t if you’re not here. The only way I can be sure the devil is really gone is if no one else is in this room.

Demon johnny: Haul ass, shawn. You’re gonna get me into that room, so help you. I can’t have them figuring out that their precious belle isn’t the problem. I am.

[Eerie music]

[Soft orchestration]

Sonny: Look, it’s not that we don’t understand you might have some, um, reservations about the plan.

Chad: Sonny, sonny, reservations isn’t quite strong enough for how I feel about it. Try repulsion. Repugnance. Abject horror.

Will: I don’t think he wants to do it.

Chad: Look, I’ve–I’ve heard you both go on hour-long rants about leo and now you want me to make his “dreams come true?” I thought we were friends. Now, you want me to do– to do that for chloe’s father, who I barely know, so he doesn’t have a rude awakening?

Sonny: Okay, okay, how about we just talk about what–what, um, doing that actually entails.

Chad: For god’s sakes, I don’t need the details.

Sonny: When we say “go to bed with him,” that is what we mean, but that’s all we mean.

Will: Chad. Don’t worry. Your virtue is safe with us.

Sonny: Mm-hmm.

Leo: Craig, I’m sorry. Upon reflection, I see that I have been unfair to nancy. Yes, she has been possessive, aggressive, vindictive–

Craig: Is this you being fair to her?

Leo: But if I stop and put myself in her sling heels, I see that even I might react badly if I ever– lost you. I can’t even bear to think about it.

Craig: Well, I don’t think you need to worry about that.

Leo: And another thing. While you know that I am not really a religious person, I am deeply, deeply spiritual, and I believe that everything happens for a reason. Think about it. At the very moment that nancy is trying to sabotage your career in new york, the devil herself sends university hospital into a tailspin. It’s like some higher power wants–no, needs you to be the new chief of staff. Think about it. This could be the start of a whole new life for us.

John: Well, doc, you see, if I’m performing this exorcism, I’m gonna have god’s protection.

Marlena: Are you sure? You’re not even a priest, john. Technically, you never were.

John: But I know what I’m doing. And I believe in what I’m doing, and I’m doing this for my daughter.

Marlena: Belle’s my daughter too. Whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name, love is the only thing that will defeat this devil. Together we are stronger. I’m not leaving here.

Shawn: All right, where’s belle? Why couldn’t you tell me what’s wrong on the phone?

Johnny: There’s no good way to say this, uncle shawn. Aunt belle’s possessed. Migraine attacks?

Chad: I know my virtue is safe because I’m not doing it. Did it ever occur to you that maybe leo and craig should be together? That maybe leo actually does love him?

Will: Okay, leo’s not capable of love. In order to love, you need to have a heart, and he does not.

Sonny: Yeah. Okay. Do you remember him back in phoenix? He’s a mercenary, a narcissist who just throws himself at men with money.

Will: Exactly. In fact, I’m surprised he settled for craig. I mean, sure, he’s well off, but not by leo’s standards. And he’s good-looking, but he’s old enough to be leo’s father. What he really likes are young men with family money, with lots of family money.

Sonny: Yeah, I’m sorry to break it to you, chad, but it wasn’t just your inner beauty that leo was attracted to.

Chad: Oh, I thought it was true love.

Will: And, listen, don’t you see that with your looks and the dimera money, all you have to do is just crook your little finger and he’d be putty in your hands. Maybe I–maybe I should’ve put it differently.

Chad: I am not saying that I couldn’t do it. I am saying that I won’T.

Sonny: Okay, again, you didn’t let us finish. Because you will not have to do anything. The minute you two are horizontal, we’re gonna send craig in.

Will: Yeah, like the cavalry.

Chad: Well, I am sorry, “send craig in?” What, am I supposed to have an audience now too?

Sonny: Craig needs to know the truth about leo, okay? And one picture is worth a thousand words.

Chad: It is not my responsibility to open his eyes. I am sorry, but bottom line is craig’s bad boyfriend is not my problem! All right, there’s not one reason why I should do this for him.

Will: Okay. Okay. Chad, I’m not asking you to do this for wesley. I’m asking you to do this for sonny.

Leo: Oh, oh, oh! Light bulb over my head! Once you are the new chief of staff, put me in charge of hr. I am such a people person. I’d be great at it, and I could be your right-hand man, your enforcer.

Craig: [Laughs] Okay. I don’t know how to put this, but you don’t know what you’re talking about, how grueling that job can be. Chief of staff gets blamed for everything and thanked for nothing.

Leo: So are you saying the chief of staff job in new york was any better?

Craig: No. Worse. All the pressure and crazy times a hundred, just like everything else in new york.

Leo: I thought you loved your job.

Craig: I do, certain aspects, like the paycheck.

Leo: Being the boss?

Craig: Yes, and, well, helping people.

Leo: You could help people here. God knows salem needs help.

Craig: I am not going to help people by taking away someone else’s job. The last time I did that, I ended up with psycho nurses and seth burns.

Leo: Who? What?

Craig: Don’t ask. It’s like I told you, when I found out that chloe was my daughter, and then when joy was born and chloe got the bone marrow to save her life, I– I realized at that time that I didn’t want to be a money-grubbing, social-climbing weasel.

Leo: But you wouldn’T.

Craig: Are you– why are you pushing this?

Leo: I’m not!

Craig: Yes, you are! Is that what you want me to be? Is it? A money-grubbing, social-climbing weasel? Was I wrong, leo, about you wanting to change?

[Scoffs]

Abigail: So, how’s sarah?

Kayla: We are still waiting for her test results to come back before we can plan the next step.

Abigail: I don’t suppose she’s allowed visitors?

Kayla: No. I’m sorry. She’s pretty fragile. She’s extremely angry that she’s hospitalized against her will. And I’m afraid she will see you as a stranger at best, or enemy at worst.

Abigail: Well, I understand why she wouldn’t want to see me. I guess–I guess I was just hoping to ease my conscience.

Kayla: How would sarah have anything to do with your conscience?

Abigail: If I hadn’t gone after gwen with that syringe and left it lying there, kristen would’ve never been able to give her the drug and none of this would’ve ever happened.

Shawn: No, I know what susan said, all right, but I would’ve known, all right? I would’ve at least sensed it.

Johnny: Uncle shawn, I’m sorry. I saw her myself. And I wasn’t the only one.

Shawn: Tell me.

Johnny: Well, she attacked my grandma, marlena. She–she had the glowing eyes, the voice. Just like we saw at the exorcism. And I had to hit her over the head to stop her. Honestly, I think she would’ve killed my grandma if I hadn’T.

Shawn: Okay, where is she?

Johnny: She’s upstairs with grandpa john and grandma marlena. They’re about to perform an exorcism. You can’t go up.

Shawn: Why the hell not?

Johnny: Because grandpa john laid down the law. He said the fewer people that were up there the safer it’d be. I just– I thought you should know.

Shawn: Yeah, you’re damn right I should know.

Johnny: I’m really sorry. I–I feel terrible.

Shawn: Yeah? Well, you should feel terrible because this is all your fault, johnny.

Belle: [Groans]

Marlena: I’m right here, darling.

Belle: John.

Marlena: John, you– you mean your dad.

John: I’m right here, izzy.

Belle: No, not john. Johnny.

Marlena: Did she just say “johnny?” It’s my 5:52 woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Sonny: Will, don’T.

Will: I’m sorry, I– I have to. It took sonny a long time to get over what leo did to him. He was humiliated, he was betrayed by that little worm. And he did get over it. But then he found out that he’s doing it someone else. And chad, he can’t sleep. I know he tries to hide it, but this eating him up inside.

[Soft dramatic music]

Sonny: I’ll admit it, it’s true. When that disgusting creep caught us trying to warn craig, he said, “nice try, bitches.” He smiled, you know, smirked right at me. And then it hit me. He liked that we were trying to stop him. It turned him on to have me watch what he did to me and to do it with another man. I have to stop him.

Chad: Oh, sonny. This doesn’t sound like it is about wesley at all. This sounds like it is about revenge. Why didn’t you just say that?

Sonny: [Laughs] So you’re in?

Chad: I am a dimera. We invented revenge. Okay? But you, you owe me. You understand me? You owe me.

Sonny: I know, I know.

Chad: And I don’t even know if this is gonna work, okay? Sure, yes, I am irresistible. But leo knows that I am straight and that I am married and that I really love my wife.

Will: Well, that is where abigail comes in.

Kayla: Abigail, do you really think that sarah is here because you didn’t get rid of the syringe?

Abigail: Well–

Kayla: I have something to tell you. Kristen dimera kidnapped sarah because she wanted to save her own butt. And if she hadn’t found that syringe, she would’ve taken her out with a baseball bat or something. No, this is ridiculous. You cannot feel guilty about this.

Abigail: But I am the person who got the drug from dr. Rolf.

Kayla: In order to get to gwen, a woman who poisoned you, publicly humiliated your father, ruined your marriage or at least tried to, to get her to tell the truth. So here’s a news flash for you. You couldn’t do it because you are a good person.

Abigail: No, I couldn’t do it because of gabby.

Kayla: Well, that’s just details. Just details. How about this? The day that kristen dimera repents and atones for her sins, that’s the day that you can feel guilty about this.

Abigail: Okay.

Kayla: Okay. And, listen, thanks to you, we have some idea about what’s in that syringe, and that’s going to help sarah. So this is not your fault. End of discussion.

Leo: I have changed. I am a new man since I met you, craig wesley. But this isn’t about me. It’s about you, your career, and most of all, the good people of this town. Do you have any idea the terror kayla unleashed on the patients at that hospital because the devil was in their midst and she looked the other way? I mean, according to “the intruder,” kayla basically let the devil run amok in the icu where he–she–they woke up a crazy coma patient named jan spears and sicced her on marlena’s own daughter. You can’t make this stuff up.

Craig: I don’t think you can blame kayla for not knowing marlena was possessed by the devil. She’s not the only one that was tricked.

Leo: Oh, honey, there is so much more you don’t know.

Johnny: My fault? How is this my fault?

Shawn: It’s you and your– your damn movie, all right? The devil would’ve never come back if you hadn’t dared it to. Oh, god. You know what? Look, I’m sorry. All right, you know what? This is exactly what he wants. He wants to turn us against each other.

Johnny: It certainly is.

Shawn: Look, I–I’m just– I’m just angry with myself. ‘Cause your grandmother, she warned me and I just– I didn’t want to listen.

Johnny: It’s–I mean, it’s all just so hard to believe, you know?

Shawn: Well, you have to believe in him to get rid of him. But I don’t care what john says. I need to be with belle, I need to see her.

Johnny: Okay. She’s upstairs.

Shawn: All right.

[Eerie music]

Belle: Johnny.

Marlena: Yes. Yes, he was here. Honey, we’re all here for you.

Belle: It’s him. It’s him.

John: What’d she say?

Shawn: What the hell?

John: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you doing here?

Johnny: I’m sorry. Look, I called him. I know you said you didn’t want him here, but he has a right to know.

John: Damn it, I told you no one else could be in this room. Shawn. We’re gonna do an exorcism, but we need to make sure that if it works, the devil just doesn’t take over another person in this room.

Shawn: I’m not just another person; I’m her husband.

Marlena: No one was trying to exclude you, shawn.

Shawn: Yeah, well, it sure seems that way. Belle? Belle, I’m here. Come on, belle, say something.

Demon belle: Damn it! Would you stop calling me belle?

Kayla: I’m sorry. Sometimes when I get too tired and too mad, I overstate my case. And I didn’t mean to sound so imperious back there.

Abigail: No, you didn’t at all. No, you’re just trying to make me feel better, and you did.

Kayla: Well, then I did something good today.

[Laughs]

Abigail: You know, earlier, I heard you talking about marlena’s job. Would it be helpful if we ran an editorial in the paper?

Kayla: No, I think that would just inflame things. I think–I just–I think I need to calm down and I need to convince the board that this is all gonna blow over in time.

Abigail: I heard you say something about threats.

Kayla: Apparently, seth burns said that my job was on the line. I’ll tell you something. The way I feel right now, if somebody wants this damn job, they can have it.

Leo: You have no idea how university hospital has fallen since you left. Babies switched at birth and sold to the highest bidder. Ever hear of security, dr. Johnson? Background checks? Moving out of the nursery, live patients declared dead.

Craig: I wish I could say that was something new.

Leo: Speaking of dead, our waitress appears to have given up the ghost. Garconess! Un autre, s’il vous plait. Where was I? Oh, yes, university hospital, the kayla johnson administration. Homicidal doctors and vip lab space handed over to stefano dimera’s mad scientist, and, from what I am told, some very, very rude candy stripers. I’m sorry, craig, but it is your duty to take over as the new chief of staff. The sick and dying of salem need you.

Kayla: I’m sorry, but I need to get back to work.

Abigail: Oh, yeah.

Kayla: I will keep you posted about sarah, all right?

Abigail: Thank you.

Kayla: And don’t worry, she’s in good hands.

Abigail: I know that. And thanks for listening to me.

Kayla: Oh, gosh, any time. I mean it. All right, I’ll see you later.

Abigail: Bye.

[Phone ringing] Hey, what’s up? I’m on my way home.

Chad: I’m not–I’m not there. I’m with will and sonny at the kiriakis place. Would you mind meeting us here?

Abigail: Yeah. What’s going on?

Chad: Eh, it’s complicated. I’ll fill you in when you get here.

Shawn: Oh, my god, belle.

Demon belle: Don’t you say that to me.

Shawn: How long has she been like this?

Marlena: Since the exorcism.

Demon belle: Did you really think it would be that easy to get rid of me?

Shawn; no, I would’ve known.

Demon belle: I didn’t want you to. I was incognito so you wouldn’t interfere with my work.

John: What work?

Demon belle: I turned myself into ej at the courthouse and stuck my tongue down abigail’s throat. And my, wasn’t that a delicious treat.

[Eerie music]

Johnny: I knew my dad wouldn’t do anything that stupid–right in the middle of his trial, just before my uncle chad was about to testify. You turned him against my father! Why?

Marlena: To destroy love. To tear families apart. To turn brother against brother.

Demon belle: Oh, marlena. You know me so well.

Johnny: Damn you!

John: No, johnny! No! No! It’s not belle!

Marlena: Belle! Belle!

John: It’s not–it’s not– damn it, stop!

Abigail: Mm-hmm. You know, I got to say, when you asked me to come over here, I just thought we’d be catching up with old friends. It just–it didn’t occur to me that all, uh, three of you were gonna ask me to sign off on my husband getting into bed with another man.

Chad: Yeah, it’s extreme.

Abigail: But you’re okay with this?

Chad: Well, I do not want to do this.

Abigail: Okay, that’s–that’s really very good for me to hear. Um–

Chad: But leo’s done some bad stuff and he’s dead set on doing it more, so–

Abigail: So it’s a far, far better thing you do, huh?

Chad: It’s your call.

Abigail: Hmm. Well, I guess I’d still be on lunatic island if it weren’t for you, so where do we start?

Chad: Well, as you might’ve guessed, I would like to get this over asap.

Will: Yes. Oh– I will call the inn.

[Phone line trilling] Hello, I would like dr. Craig wesley’s room please. Or maybe it’s under the name leo stark. Oh, right, okay. I’ll call back. They are out for the evening.

Chad: Well, they have to come home sometime. And when they do, abby and I will be waiting for them.

Leo: And think about it, what’s left for you in new york anyway? Parker and joy are away at school, and the two adults who love you most in the world, me and chloe, we’re right here.

Craig: Yeah. How do I put this delicately? You’re not the most popular person here.

Leo: Well, it matters to me not that I am liked so long as I am loved. Well, that was profound, don’t you think?

Craig: It was your depth that attracted me in the first place.

Leo: Don’t I know it.

Craig: Guess it would be nice to live closer to chloe. And I guess if they are gonna get rid of kayla anyway, I could just put my hat in the ring.

Leo: Unless there’s someone on the board who remembers the work you did. They could put your hat in the ring for you.

Craig: Maybe you’re right. Wonder where seth burns is.

Leo: This calls for tiramisu.

John: It’s not belle, kid.

Shawn: You’re not helping, you know.

Johnny: I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I just– what she said.

Marlena: It was very upsetting. But it wasn’t belle. It was him.

John: Now do you understand why I didn’t want anyone else in this room?

Shawn: I’m staying. Belle’s my wife.

Marlena: John, you know how I feel about this. The more people in this room that love her, the better.

John: No. Because if there are people in this room, we’ll never know for sure if the devil is really gone.

Johnny: You know what? I just got an idea. We treat our faces to the best skin care.

Will: All right. One, two.

[Both groaning] I wonder if leo’s taking the bait.

Sonny: There’s not much we can do now until chad and abigail have told us they’ve set the stage. I guess that means we’re done with our workout.

Will: Well, not necessarily.

Chad: Well, a night all alone and we’re doing this.

Abigail: Well, this was not my idea.

Chad: Here he comes.

Abigail: Okay, here we go.

[Clears throat] You’re never– you never listen to me!

Chad: Yes, I do!

Abigail: Okay, well, then what did I just say?

Chad: I–I don’t know. I can’t quote verbatim, but I’m sure it had something to do with how unhappy you are and how it’s always my fault, because that’s all you ever talk about!

Abigail: Well, you never say or do anything! And you haven’t touched me in months!

Chad: I have a had a lot on my mind!

Abigail: You think I don’t notice that the only time you light up is when you talk about going to visit will and sonny in phoenix? And that other guy, whatever his name is, leo stark.

Craig: It’s been a long time. Burns’ office is here.

Kayla: Dr. Wesley? +What are you doing here?

Johnny: I’ve been doing research for my movie. Hey, when you stopped at home to pick up your exorcism stuff, did you happen to–

John: Stuff?

Johnny: Yeah, the–the– did you get that– the medal, right? The medal thing that the gabe guy gave you, saint–

John: Benedict?

Johnny: Yeah.

John: Yeah. In fact, I’ve got it right–

Johnny: I don’t need to see it. I’m just saying, doesn’t it give you power over the devil so you can drive him away?

John: That’s a fact.

Johnny: So… grandma and uncle shawn hold onto it while you’re performing the exorcism, won’t they be protected too?

John: Well, I don’t know. I suppose so.

Marlena: Wow. Good thinking there.

Johnny: I only wish I would have thought of it last time.

Shawn: Okay, let’s do it.

Johnny: Well, I think I’m the one person that you guys don’t need in this room. So if you need me back for anything, I’ll just be right out here.

Marlena: Thank you, johnny.

Johnny: I just pray this works.

[Dramatic music]

John: All right, here we go. Put your hand on top of mine.

Marlena: Strange. She had no reaction.

[Eerie music]

John: In the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit. Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Will: Uh, why don’t we take this upstairs?

Sonny: You know, actually, I feel kind of guilty, being here alone with you while chad and abigail are stuck with leo.

Will: Leo who?

Sonny: [Laughs]

Leo: [Clears throat]

Chad: Leo. We were just talking about you.

Leo: Really?

Chad: I didn’t know you were in salem.

Leo: I have a new boyfriend, a salemite boyfriend.

Abigail: Mm. Well, lucky him.

Chad: Right. Sorry. Um… leo, this is my wife, abigail. Abigail, this is–

Abigail: Yeah, the famous leo. I kind of figured.

Leo: Famous?

Abigail: Yeah. He never stops talking about you, so you obviously made quite an impression on him.

Chad: I wouldn’t– I wouldn’t go that far.

Abigail: I would.

Leo: Anyway, nice to see you again.

[Smooth jazz music]

Chad: Hooked.

Craig: Kayla, you are the chief of staff, and you’ve given yourself a graveyard shift.

Kayla: Can I help you with something?

Craig: [Laughs] Well, uh, as a matter of fact, you can. After leo and I ran into you and steve, we– well, we started talking and we thought maybe we’d kick around the idea of staying in salem and I wanted to find out from you if you had any positions here available on staff?

Kayla: I don’t think that I have any position available for someone with your expertise.

Craig: Ah, well, that’s all right. I mean, I wouldn’t be climbing that proverbial ladder. I’d be perfectly happy starting at the bottom.

John: Depart, then, transgressor. Depart, seducer, full of lies and cunning. Foe of virtue, persecutor of the innocent. Give place, give way, you monster, give way to christ!

Marlena: And stay away from all of us!

[Thunder rumbles]

Belle: What happened?

Marlena: You don’t remember?

Belle: Where am I?

Marlena: You’re at the dimera mansion. You’re in johnny’s bedroom.

Belle: I was– I was downstairs with johnny and something happened.

Marlena: You’re okay, darling. You were sick, but now you’re healed.

Belle: What? I love you.

Shawn: I love you too.

Marlena: Thank god. The devil is gone, forever.

[Dramatic music]

Will: A couple of days ago.

Chad: I’m sorry we couldn’t get together sooner. I was out of town.

Sonny: Yeah, we, uh, heard you found sarah horton.

Chad: Yeah, kristen had her this whole time. Abigail started asking questions and kristen grabbed her too.

Will: Are you freaking kidding me?

Chad: I wish I was. But we’re home, we’re safe.

Sonny: I mean, was it– was it scary on the, uh, dimera private island?

Chad: Yeah, but at least I wasn’t dealing with leo stark.

Sonny: Right.

Craig: Oh!

Leo: Oh. I thought you were asleep.

Craig: I was.

Leo: Well, come on. The night is young. And you’re not responding. Fine, take a nap. See if I care.

Craig: Baby, it’s been great, it’s just–we’ve been going all day. I need a break.

Craig: Mm. I’m serious, leo. Come on. I’m not a spring chicken anymore. Besides, I’m hungry. Let me buy you some dinner, hmm?

John: [Sighs] Oh, baby.

Marlena: I’m so glad you’re here.

John: Your message just said “emergency.” I was going out of my mind.

Marlena: I didn’t want to leave the information on the voice mail.

John: Okay, okay, so what’s going on?

Marlena: I think you better brace yourself.

[Foreboding music]

Demon johnny: Why, auntie belle, you seem to be in a bit of a bind. Well, it’s a good thing this bed’s comfy. If things work out, you’re gonna be here for a while.

[Laughing]

Brady: Come in.

Chloe: Hey.

Brady: You look tired.

Chloe: Ugh, I am. I haven’t really been sleeping very well lately, and I don’t think I will until I can get my dad out of leo’s clutches. Do you know that he called me today?

Brady: Your dad?

Chloe: Yeah. We spoke for over an hour, and he’s just furious.

Brady: Because we were trying to grill leo?

Chloe: Yeah, that, and also sending sonny and will to warn him about that creep.

Brady: Leo must’ve given him an earful.

Chloe: Yeah, and he bought it all. It’s just–it’s so crazy. I feel like I don’t know my own father anymore.

Brady: No, no, chloe, chloe. I mean, sooner or later your dad is gonna realize that you had his best interests at heart. Sonny and will are not giving up.

Chloe: I just wish I knew what this secret plan of theirs is. And hoping it doesn’t blow up in our faces–or my dad’S.

[All laugh]

Chad: The-the-the thing that drove me craziest about leo is that nothing fazes him. I mean, I told him that I was straight, that I was married. That I got two kids. And then the guy still doesn’t take “no” for answer.

Sonny: No, that’s–that is leo, all right.

Marlena: The night of the exorcism, I thought you had freed me from the hell that I was going through. And that we would return to our lives and everything would be normal.

John: And it has.

Marlena: No, no, it hasn’T.

John: What are you talking about? And what the hell are we doing here anyway?

Marlena: John, this is where it happened.

John: This is where what happened?

Marlena: I came here looking for belle.

John: Why would belle be here anyway?

Marlena: No, but wait. Please, please. Let me explain, okay? I came in, and I was attacked.

John: What? Okay, stop right there. Let’s just slow this down and start from the beginning. Just tell me what happened.

Marlena: You didn’t vanquish the devil that night. The devil just left my soul and went into somebody else’S.

John: You’re kidding me.

Marlena: I wish I were. Because john, it went into our daughter.

John: Belle? Oh, no way. Doc, no, it can’t be. No.

Demon johnny: You know, I knew I wouldn’t have any problem conning that airhead susan banks into believing the devil’s got you. But what really impresses me is that I did the same thing to marlena. I mean, your own mother thinks you’re possessed. It’s glorious. And as long as you keep making like sleeping beauty, no one will ever be the wiser. The thing to work on now is well, what to do when– when you wake up. If. If you wake up. It’s my 5:52 woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Kayla: Ugh. I’m sorry I’m late.

Steve: Oh, it’s okay, baby. I already ordered for you.

Kayla: That’s sweet of you.

Steve: I’d better be sweet after the day you’ve had.

Steve: How’s eli doing?

Kayla: Well, we thought the surgery was a success, but he’s slipped into a coma.

Kayla: Yeah, yeah, of course. She’s there at the hospital with paulina and valerie, and julie’s there too, and you know, I just– they all love him so much.

Steve: I can’t believe a punk drug dealer shot a good cop in broad daylight.

[Sighs] Well, you need to eat. Let me get the waitress.

Kayla: No, no, no, not yet. You know, there’s something else. The board is pressuring me to fire marlena.

Steve: [Sighs]

John: So belle was the one who attacked you?

Marlena: She attacked johnny too. John, when I looked at her, her eyes were glowing.

John: Where is she now?

Marlena: Upstairs. Tied up like I was. This is all my fault.

John: No, it’s not. No, it’s not, no, it’s not.

Marlena: Of course it is. The devil came after me. He wanted to control me completely, and when he couldn’t, he went after our baby.

John: No, no, you can’t blame yourself, honey, you can’T.

Marlena: Who else is–

John: Just-just-just give me a second, I-I-I gotta think about this because– something about this doesn’t make any sense here. I’ve spent far too much time with belle the night after the exorcism. I mean, I would have seen the signs.

Marlena: He knew that. He stayed away from you.

John: Okay, so why show himself now?

Marlena: Well, it wasn’t voluntary. Susan came back to town. She warned me about him.

John: And what did susan say?

Marlena: She came here looking for johnny. When she got here, she saw belle, and belle was wearing a coat with “666” on it.

John: No, I can’t buy it. I need to see belle for myself.

Marlena: You can’t talk to her, john. I’ve sedated her.

John: She’s alone?

Marlena: Well, no, no, johnny is with her. Johnny was the one who kept her from hurting me.

John: How’d he stop her?

Marlena: I’m afraid he knocked her unconscious.

John: Oh, my god.

Marlena: I know. I don’t know what would’ve happened if he hadn’t been here.

Demon johnny: Things would definitely go more smoothly if you never woke up. The good people of salem would want to believe that the devil died when you did. Yeah, I like it.

John: Johnny! What in the hell are you doing? Super emma just about sleeps in her cape.

Johnny: Grandpa john, hey!

John: You had both your hands around her neck.

Johnny: I–she was so quiet. I swear I was–I was just making sure she was still breathing.

John: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Just get away from her. Belle? Izzy b? Sweetheart, it’s daddy. I’m right here, honey. Your mom’s here too, sweetie. Where’s shawn? Does he know about this?

Marlena: No, not yet, I– I wanted to talk to you before I told him.

John: Okay, well now I know. She’s gonna need him.

Marlena: But john, it’s been a horrible day. Eli walked in on a drug bust. The dealer shot him. He’s critical.

John: Oh, I don’t even believe this.

Marlena: And shawn is in charge of the case. And somebody has to be there for julie.

John: He needs to know right now.

Johnny: We-we just thought, uh, you know, the fewer people that got wind of this, the better.

John: Well, you’re not calling the shots here. And we don’t know for sure she even is possessed.

Johnny: Did grandma tell you what she did?

John: Yeah, yeah, yeah, kid. She told me. But before I accept the fact that we’re dealing with the devil again, I’m gonna make damn sure that belle’s behavior isn’t caused by something else.

Steve: And it’s bad enough the board wants marlena gone, but they’re asking you to fire her?

Kayla: Yeah.

Craig: Uh, excuse me. I-I don’t mean to interrupt, but the board wants to fire marlena? Why would they do such a thing?

Steve: This is a private conversation.

Craig: I know.

Kayla: Craig? Craig wesley?

Craig: Good to see you again, kayla.

Kayla: Wow. Steve, you remember craig. He’s chloe’s dad.

Steve: Right, right, yeah. I’m sorry, it’s been a while.

Kayla: Well, steve and i are married now.

Craig: Oh, congratulations.

Kayla: Yeah. Um, well, listen, that’s so nice of you and nancy to come in to see chloe.

Craig: We’re um, we’re both here to see chloe. But we’re no longer together.

Kayla: I’m sorry, I–

Leo: Well, I’m not. I’m his new boyfriend.

Chad: You guys expect me to believe that-that chloe lane’s dad is-is not only gay all of a sudden, but he’s also dating leo stark?

Sonny: Look, we’re not putting you on, man. Okay, I wish we were, but chloe’s really upset.

Chad: Okay, why–then why doesn’t she just tell her dad that leo is a total sleaze?

Will: Well, she tried. And when he refused to believe her, she asked us to talk to him. Which we did.

Sonny: And that did not work, either.

Will: Yeah, apparently, dr. Wesley hasn’t been a perfect person, so he’s willing to be forgiving.

Chad: I don’t care what dr. Wesley’s rap sheet looks like; it can’t be nearly as bad as leo’S.

Sonny: Well, we have to do something, you know, but it– it’s not gonna be easy ’cause, you know, wesley hasn’t been out that long, and leo is very, um, attentive.

Chad: Okay. I don’t need the details. I know–I know very well all about leo’s attentiveness.

Will: That–exactly. Which is why we need your help.

Chad: Me? What can I do?

Brady: Look, sonny and will, they know leo better than anyone. So if sonny says he has a way to get your dad to see leo’s true colors, I believe him.

Chloe: I want to, but you didn’t hear my dad on the phone today. He said that he’s never been happier in his life than when he’s been with leo.

Brady: Yeah, I know a little something about the illusion of happiness. Remember theresa? Or kristen? But we sometimes, you just want to–want to believe something so badly that you almost will yourself to think it’s true.

Leo: But being possessed by the devil– gotta be a game changer. What, I-I read about it in the “intruder.” I have nothing but respect for the woman. That marlena devil is one fierce bitch.

Marlena: John. I know you hate this, but… she’s definitely possessed.

Johnny: She’s right, I– I saw those-those weird eyes, and–well, if that’s not proof, I don’t know what is. Very scary.

John: Yeah, well, I want to see for myself.

[Ominous music]

John: I’ve been trying to get a hold of eric, but he’s not getting back, so. If there’s gonna be another exorcism here, I’m gonna have to perform it myself.

Johnny: You’re-you’re not really a priest.

John: The priesthood did not save marlena all those years ago. It was our love for one another. And now that same love is what’s gonna have to save our child.

Kayla: You shouldn’t believe everything you read in the “intruder.”

Leo: So they just made it up? Salem’s top shrink didn’t really go on a demonic rampage? Well, I hope the woman sues for libel in that case.

Kayla: I didn’t say they made it up.

Leo: Hmm, you kinda did.

Steve: Okay, that’s enough. Marlena and john are very close friends of ours. We’re not gonna discuss something you read about them in a tabloid.

Leo: Okay, okay. I’m-I’m sorry if I hit a nerve.

Craig: Kayla, I think it’s quite admirable how– how you’re sticking by your friend and colleague, but I just remember how tough the board could be when I was chief of staff.

Kayla: Thank you.

Leo: Mm-hmm, yes. Thank you, craig. For smoothing over an awkward situation like only you can. Isn’t he charming and adorable? Right. Well, though this convo has been a barrel of monkeys, we have got to get going. I just called the pub. Our table is ready, and they’re gonna have your dirty martini waiting.

Craig: That’s wonderful. Maybe we could all get together sometime?

Leo: Ooh! A double date, I love it! And I promise, the topic of old beelzebub will not come up. We can stick to global extinction crisis. Did you know that 22 animals and one plant can now be considered extinct and removed from the endangered species list?

Craig: Leo likes to read the scientific journals a lot these days.

Leo: So our date. How does this weekend look by you guys? If you don’t mind a little bit of a schlep, I was thinking we can go to my favorite french restaurant in chicago, pierrot gourmet. The confit de canard, superb.

Kayla: Well, you know, steve and I are really so busy right now. I–we’d have to check our calendars.

Craig: Okay, well, um, some other time.

Kayla: Yeah.

Leo: Ta-ta. A bientT.

Kayla: I guess what my mom used to say is true.

Steve: What’s that?

Kayla: There’s a lid for every pot.

Sonny: Craig isn’t gonna believe a word we have to say about leo. I mean, he won’t even listen to his own daughter. So we have to show him with his own eyes what a degenerate this guy is.

Chad: Okay. How do I fit in?

Sonny: Uh, well, if there’s one thing that leo likes as much as money, maybe more, it’s sex.

Will: Yeah, leo’s probably a sex addict. Which is a real thing. There is a 12-step program, so we read.

Chad: Okay, okay, but we’re not gonna get leo to go through those 12 steps or any other 12 steps for that matter, so why do we care?

Sonny: Because we have to understand this guy’s weaknesses if we’re gonna exploit them.

Chad: And how do you propose we do that?

Sonny: Uh, well, we thought we would offer leo two of his biggest temptations– sex and money– in one great-looking package. Migraine attacks?

Steve: I can’t believe that a man that age, a doctor, no less, would fall for a creep like leo stark.

Kayla: Yeah, it’s baffling.

Steve: I mean, even when the guy was babbling on and on, embarrassing himself, wesley just looked at him adoringly.

Kayla: No, I don’t–I don’t think that he was looking at him adoringly. I think that craig was, uh, you know, embarrassed about leo’s behavior.

Steve: That’s not what I saw. He seemed head over heels to me. I mean, oh man, I think he’s brave coming out at this point in his life. But to choose a guy like that?

Kayla: Yeah, it does seem like not a great match.

Steve: That’s an understatement.

Kayla: Listen, next time, please, please tell me to keep my voice down when I’m talking about work.

Steve: So craig overheard us. It’s no big deal.

Kayla: No, you don’t understand. I heard that craig pulled every dirty trick in the book to steal the chief of staff job away from mike horton.

Steve: You’re not worried that craig might come after your job, are you?

Kayla: No, but I don’t put anything past him. Especially now that he’s hooked up with a con man like leo stark.

Craig: I just can’t stop thinking about the board wanting to fire marlena.

Leo: A legend who turned into a complete monster, complete with glowing eyeballs and fangs.

Craig: Fangs?

Leo: That’s what some people are saying.

Craig: Yeah, well, whatever they’re saying, she’s highly respected. Like you said, a legend.

Leo: Well, people are fickle. You’re in like flynn one minute. The next, you can’t get arrested. Cancel culture and all that.

Craig: Yeah, you’re right about that.

Leo: Ooh, I think you should get a big steak and some home fried potatoes.

Craig: Yeah? And then I’d have to double up on my cholesterol meds.

Leo: You’ll work it all off once we get back to the hotel. I will see to that.

Craig: You will, won’t you? You’re too much.

Leo: [Sighs]

Craig: I just wish chloe would find a way to accept us.

Chloe: Sure I do. I mean, none of this mess is your problem. And you know you can bail any time you want to, right?

Brady: Oh, thank you. I will never do that. How many personal dramas have you seen me through?

Chloe: I don’t feel like it’s that many.

Brady: [Laughs] All right, why don’t we go back to last summer when I just got out of the hospital? What did you do? You ran the office. You took care of me. You-you spent time with rachel. Who adores you, by the way.

Chloe: Well, I’m-I’m pretty crazy about her as well. And I’ll always be here for you.

Brady: I don’t know what I did to deserve having you come back into my life the way you have, but I’m so grateful that you have. Hey. How-how was san francisco?

John: Oh, hey, sorry, kids. I can’t talk about it right now.

Johnny: Where’s grandpa john?

Marlena: He went home to get what he needs for the exorcism.

Johnny: Who knew that stuff would keep coming in handy, huh? Uh, sorry. Bad-bad joke.

Marlena: I’m not really in a jokey mood. I’m a little concerned about her.

Johnny: Me too. I still can’t get over seeing her that way, you know? What she was capable of with the devil inside her.

Marlena: We have to get her back.

Johnny: I just hope grandpa john’s able to save her soul before it’s too late.

Leo: Another martini?

Craig: Mm-mm. Dinner will be here shortly.

Leo: You’ve been kind of quiet. Thinking about chloe?

Craig: Yeah, I have. She’s my daughter.

Leo: I wish she would give me a chance to prove how much I love you.

[Phone beeps]

Leo: What, what is it?

Craig: It’s a text from one of my friends at the hospital. “Hey, craig. Just to let you know, nancy’s been in touch with me and various others at the hospital, informing us that you’re getting divorced. She’s also told us the reason.”

Leo: Why would she do that?

Craig: Maybe she’s hurt, angry, wants sympathy. Which I can understand, it’s– gonna be a problem for us. For me, I mean. The hospital, she’s beloved there. They-they–she organizes the volunteers, she does the fundraising. They love her there. She’s great at that stuff. If anybody thinks that I treated her poorly, my career could take a hit. They could fire me for this.

Leo: They cannot fire you for being gay.

Craig: I know. But it could freeze me out of important social circles, which could end my career.

Leo: So who says we have to go back to new york?

Craig: I do. That’s where my career is.

Leo: But you said it started here in salem. And you said it was a promising start.

Craig: I did.

Leo: So what if you come back? Pick up where you left off?

Chad: Okay. So if I’m understanding you correctly, then you want to offer leo a chance at more money and better sex than he’s getting from chloe’s dad?

Sonny: Exactly.

Chad: Okay, so how do you, uh, propose we do that then? Hire someone and have him pretend to a be a rich guy who’s hot for leo?

Will: No. He-he would be on to that in a second, he’s not dumb. He would recognize a fellow prostitute or con man.

Sonny: Yeah, no, will’s right. This–this guy has to be the real deal.

Chad: Oh, that’s gonna be pretty hard to find, right?

Sonny: Mm, maybe not.

Johnny: You have to take care of yourself, grandma.

Marlena: No, I’m fine.

Johnny: I haven’t seen you eat anything. Why don’t you go down to the kitchen? Find something to eat.

Marlena: I’m not hungry. And I’m not leaving her until john gets back.

[Foreboding music]

Demon johnny: Maybe I should just get rid of marlena right now. She’s starting to bore me. It’d be easy. I could blame it on belle. Tell john that belle broke free of the restraints and strangled her poor old mother. I tried to help her, of course, but there was nothing I could do.

[Door opens]

Marlena: Oh. Thank god you’re here. Did you get what you wanted?

John: Yeah.

Johnny: I’ll-I’ll do anything I can to help.

John: Well, the best thing you can right now, johnny, is just leave us alone.

John: I’m not asking you to leave because you’re annoying. I’m telling you that you have to leave because I don’t want the devil making you his next host.

Marlena: That’s very sweet of you, but john is right. The fewer people in this room, the better.

Johnny: What if–what if i just stand way over there?

Marlena: Out.

John: Why don’t you just go downstairs and wait for us.

Johnny: I can’t do anything to change your guys’ minds, huh?

[Tense music]

Marlena: Well, I’ve never actually seen this done before. I’ve only been on the receiving end. Just tell me what you’d like me to do.

John: Okay, I will. I want you to leave the room, too, doc.

Demon johnn: If I’m not there when the ritual starts, john is gonna find out that belle’s not possessed. Marlena evans and that ersatz priest husband of hers are gonna figure out the truth. I’ve got to do something to get back up in that room. Of course.

[Line trills]

Johnny: Uncle shawn. It’s me, johnny. Look, can-can you come over to my house right away? Something’s happened to aunt belle.

Brady: You’re really ready to give up on philip?

Chloe: Well, sometimes I– I think that we just have to face the reality. And the reality is, I don’t know where he is or when he’s coming back. Or if he’s coming back. You know, I think I just have to accept that maybe he’s dead. And I don’t know who got to him or why. Maybe it was kristen because she escaped around that time, but– I just, I know it wasn’t you.

Brady: Thank god.

Chloe: And I’m tired of living my life in limbo.

Brady: You’ve had so much to deal with lately.

Chloe: I-I know. But that’s what has made me think of this. I think about my dad and how he’s lived his entire life in denial. And if he would have just been honest with himself and my mom a lot sooner… you know, I don’t wanna live like that, I– I don’t live–want to live a life where I deny what I– what I feel for you.

Brady: Really? Do you have any idea how long I’ve been waiting for you to say those words? Chloe, I just–I need to know that you’re sure about it.

Chloe: You have been so patient and gentle with me.

Brady: Oh come on.

Chloe: No, it’s true, brady. It’s true, I think– I think it’s always been you.

Craig: And do what? Hang out a shingle so I could try and build a practice at my age?

Leo: You heard what kayla johnson said. The board wants her to can dr. Devil, and she doesn’t have the guts to do it.

Craig: What does that have to do with me?

Sonny: Well, it-it would have to be somebody who, you know, leo’s already expressed interest in. You know, somebody who wouldn’t have to sell himself.

Will: Something along the lines of making leo’s wildest dreams come true.

Chanel: Oh, don’t worry. I have no desire to talk about johnny or what went down this morning.

Paulina: What happened with johnny?

Chanel: Horton, I gotta call you back. My mom just got here.

Paulina: What did that little creep do now?

Chanel: Oh, I went by there this morning to try to get him to let me and allie out of doing his stupid movie, and he said he would if I agreed to drop the lawsuit, meaning that I wouldn’t get a dime in our divorce.

Paulina: Well, I hope you told him to kick rocks.

Chanel: Well, I would have, but we got interrupted.

Paulina: Back up. When did you speak to ray?

Chanel: This morning. He came by with the latest version of the script, and allie and I told him we don’t care that we signed contracts, there is no way that we are working with him or johnny. And he said he doesn’t wanna make us do anything we don’t wanna do.

Paulina: Because of me?

Chanel: I guess he’s trying to make amends with you and lani, and letting me out of the movie is a part of that.

Paulina: But you still have to get johnny to agree.

Chanel: Yeah, he has final say on the casting, but, knowing that, if he says it’s okay, mr. Coates is cool with it, that’s huge. I mean, he’s the producer. He doesn’t have to do this. I guess he really is trying to get back in your good graces.

Paulina: Yeah, well, ray, he’s made it clear he wants a chance to make things up to me.

Chanel: What did you say?

Paulina: Still thinking about it.

Chanel: I have to admit that he did seem like a decent guy, but I–

Paulina: But what?

Chanel: I’m just not sure I trust him. And how could I after all the hell he put you through?

Paulina: It was a long time ago. But, believe me, when it comes to ray coates, my eyes, they are wide open. I’m not gonna forget what that man did to me, but I told him forgiveness has to be earned.

Chanel: Oh, so you are considering forgiving him?

Paulina: I still have a lot of reservations, but given that everyone in this town, that they forgave me for what I almost did so it seems hypocritical not to believe in giving a second chance to others.

Chanel: I just–I don’t wanna see you get hurt again.

Paulina: Oh, no, don’t you worry about me, baby. Let’s just focus on getting you out of that movie. Now, ray, maybe he can read that fine print and find a way that will allow him to overrule johnny.

Chanel: Well, if he does, I’m sure it won’t be hard for him to find someone else to play celeste perrault.

Beth: He already has. I’m the new celeste.

Valerie: I understand the head of neurosurgery operated on eli. Did she express any concern about permanent brain damage?

Kayla: No, not at this point. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see.

Valerie: Yeah.

Lani: Can we see him?

Kayla: I think he should be in recovery now. I don’t think that the anesthesia has worn off, but you’re welcome to sit with him. Maybe we just keep it to two for now, okay?

Abe: Yeah. Would you give eli my love?

Lani: Yes.

[Soft music]

Eli, it’s me. I’m right here, my love. I am right here, and so is your mom.

Valerie: Hey, darling. Hey, baby, that’s right. You know, I came all the way from D.C. So don’t keep me waiting, baby. I want to see your beautiful smile and hear your voice.

Eli: [Grunts]

Valerie: What?

Lani: Eli, baby.

Eli: [Grunts]

Valerie: What is he trying to say? Eli? Oh, god, oh. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Chanel: So you’re the new celeste perrault?

Beth: Yeah, I was just cast. Oh, were you hoping to get the role?

Chanel: Oh, no, I already did, and I have been trying to get out of it for weeks.

Beth: May I ask why?

Paulina: Well, her soon-to-be ex-husband, he’s the director.

Beth: Ah.

Chanel: Yeah. So, mom, do you think maybe this means that johnny’s caved?

Paulina: Why would he do that?

Chanel: Well, I did help him with a family crisis earlier, so, you know, maybe this is his way of saying thanks? Have you talked to johnny dimera?

Beth: No, just tr.

Chanel: Well, I don’t care how you got the part or how it happened, I’m just glad that it did.

Beth: Not to pry, but your ex-husband…

Chanel: Mm-hmm.

Beth: Should I be worried about working with him?

Chanel: Oh, no, no, not at all. He is a very talented director, personal issues aside. He’s very passionate about this project. And when I agreed to do the movie, he had me trying on wigs and learning to read tarot cards. He wants it all to be exactly right and totally convincing.

Beth: Did you say tarot cards?

Chanel: Yeah, didn’t you read the script?

Beth: Not yet. Like I said, I just got cast. Oh, but tr did mention something about celeste being a psychic.

Chanel: Yes, and stefano dimera’s henchwoman, and his lover. My girl wore a lot of hats.

Beth: Wow. If you have time, I’d love to pick your brain about the role.

Chanel: Oh, what about now? This is my bakery. I can go inside and grab you a free pastry and we can chat.

Beth: Oh, that is so kind.

Chanel: Chanel. And this is my mother, paulina price.

Paulina: Pleasure to meet you.

Beth: I’m beth. Nice to meet you both. Thank you so much for doing this.

Chanel: Oh, no, don’t worry. You are the one who is helping me out. Later, mama.

Abe: Lani said that the shooter was a known drug dealer. Frank something or other.

Shawn: But he wasn’t working an active case that involved the guy.

Abe: Yes, she mentioned that.

Julie: Maybe he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Shawn: That’s possible. Look, from what I understand is that he was questioning someone, a woman, right before the shooting.

Abe: Well, that was part of a background check. She was at the station in the morning, and when lani arrived, she said that eli had stepped out in the middle of the meeting.

Julie: Why would he do that?

Abe: Well, that’s unclear. Lani was gonna ask that, and then shawn came in and said there was a shooting at the park.

Shawn: Listen, I’m gonna go look into these leads before they dry up, okay? And are you gonna be okay here if I take off?

Julie: Of course. You find out why this happened to eli, my eli. Abe will look after me.

Shawn: I love you.

Julie: I love you, too.

Shawn: I’ll see you.

Julie: Oh, how’s lani? How’s lani holding up?

Abe: She’s shook up, but she’s keeping it together. You know, I think she could use some additional support.

Julie: Hm.

Tr: Damn, I wish I’d saved some of that stash for myself instead of using it all on frank. It’s probably for the best, though. I got to keep a clear head.

[Tense music]

Eli’s death should have hit the news by now. What? How is that punk still alive?

[Phone line trilling]

Paulina: Hi, abraham. It’s nice to hear from you.

Abe: Paulina, there’s something you should know. Earlier today, eli was shot.

Paulina: Oh, my god. Is he all right?

Abe: At the moment.

Paulina: Does lani know?

Abe: Yes, yes, we’re here at the hospital.

Paulina: I’ll be right there.

Lani: I can’t make out what he’s saying.

Kayla: He’s probably just dreaming.

Lani: Hey, baby, you have to relax, okay? You’ve been through a lot, but you made it. And when you wake up, you will see that we are all here. Me, your mom, my dad.

[Tense music]

[Gunshot]

Eli: No, no.

Valerie: What?

Lani: He seems really agitated.

Kayla: Lani, honey, just keep talking to him and try to keep him calm.

Lani: Eli, baby, you have nothing to worry about, okay? Your family is here. Our babies are safe.

Valerie: Yes, yes, and the man who did this is no longer a threat to you or anyone else.

Eli: No.

Lani: Baby, please. Baby, please, you gotta relax.

[Monitors beeping]

Kayla: Okay, okay.

Lani: Eli, wait, what’s going–wait, eli, baby.

I may have moderate to

Allie: Tripp, hi, it’s me. I got your text, and I think I found everything you left here. I put it all in a box, so just–whenever you want me to drop it off, just give me a text, or a call, or whatever you want. I hope you’re doing well. Bye.

Beth: So celeste is a psychic, and she went up against the devil?

Chanel: Yeah, she was the first person to sense he was in salem. Sure wish she was here now.

Beth: Sorry?

Chanel: Oh, I was just saying that she was from new orleans and has a creole accent.

Beth: Ah. I’m gonna need to work on that. Wow, tr was right. This really is a great part.

Chanel: You said that he was the one who cast you?

Beth: Yes.

Chanel: Hm, interesting.

Beth: I take it you know him.

Chanel: I just met him recently, but he used to date my mom.

Beth: I see.

Chanel: Yeah, they actually have a daughter together, my half-sister, lani.

Beth: Are tr and your mother close?

Chanel: He’d like them to be, but he did some pretty bad stuff to her in the past, so she’s not sure she can trust him.

Beth: Right.

Chanel: He apologized to me for you know, the way he treated her, and he seems sincere, but he claims he put it all behind him and that he’s changed. I just–I don’t think men like that can change. But mama thinks that everyone deserves a second chance, so I don’t know, maybe she’s right.

Beth: Chanel, I have something I need to tell you.

[Cell phone rings] Oh.

[Cell phone rings] Hello?

Shawn: Is this ms. Howard?

Beth: Yes, who’s this?

Shawn: This is shawn brady, acting commissioner of the salem pd. Listen, I need you to come down to the station right away.

Paulina: Julie, I’m so sorry that this happened. I know how much you love eli. We all do.

Tr: Paulina, I just heard about lani’s husband. How is he?

Paulina: He’s in recovery. Lani’s in with him now.

Tr: Is he awake?

Julie: Not as far as we know.

Abe: You must be…

Tr: Tr coates, lani’s father.

Julie: I didn’t know you were in the picture.

Tr: It’s a recent development, and you are?

Paulina: Tr, this is julie williams. This is eli’s grandmother, and this is mayor abraham carver.

Tr: The man lani thought was her dad.

Abe: Is her dad.

Tr: I appreciate you looking after my little girl. I don’t know how to thank you.

Abe: I don’t need your thanks. Being lani’s father is the greatest gift to my life. Lani will always be my daughter, and I’ll do my best to protect her, and to that end, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave.

Lani: Eli, baby, baby, please don’t die. Eli, we need you. Please, please, eli, please.

Valerie: Okay, the o2 levels are dropping.

Lani: What is wrong with him? Kayla, what’s happening?

Kayla: Okay, I need you to back up, okay? Can we get a mask in here? Lani, please, give us some room. Can you go outside, please?

Valerie: Okay, she’s gonna go outside, but I’m staying right here–I gotta help.

Lani: Please, you have to save him, kayla.

Valerie: We’re gonna do everything. We’re gonna do everything, I promise you that, I promise you that. Migraine attacks?

Allie: Hi, dupree, what are you doing here?

Chanel: I think I have good news. I think I just met the new celeste perrault.

Allie: What?

Chanel: Yeah, apparently tr gave another actress the part.

Allie: Okay, so what does this mean? I mean, are we off the hook? We don’t have to do the movie?

Chanel: Well, that’s what I’m hoping.

Allie: Well, if that’s true, that would be very good news.

[Timer dings] And you made it just in time ’cause I made snickerdoodles.

Chanel: Working even when you’re not.

Allie: There for my brother, will; they’re his favorite.

Chanel: It was nice to finally meet him. He’s a hottie.

Allie: Okay, remember he is the gay brother, the married gay brother.

Chanel: Oh, listen, I am done dating your family. And did you guys have fun catching up?

Allie: We did. Actually, we spent a lot of the time talking about you.

Shawn: I appreciate you coming down here, ms. Howard.

Beth: No problem. What’s this about?

Shawn: Well, as you may recall, detective price and I ran out of here earlier because there was a report of a shooting. Turns out, the victim was her husband, detective eli grant.

Beth: Oh, my god, what happened?

Shawn: He was shot by a local drug dealer.

Beth: That’s awful, but what does this have to do with me?

Shawn: Well, you were the last person to see him before the shooting, and I was hoping maybe you could shed some light as to why he was at the park.

Beth: All he said was that he had something to take care of and it wouldn’t be long, but then he never came back. Now I know why. His poor wife. She’s so young to be a widow.

Shawn: Detective grant is still alive. When I left the hospital, he was just getting out of surgery. I’m hoping soon he’ll be able to tell me what really went down.

Beth: Detective, keep him away from your wife and kids. He is the devil incarnate. Detective grant is alive. This changes everything, doesn’t it?

Abe: Didn’t you hear me? I asked you to leave.

Tr: Now, why would I do that? I’m family. Maybe you two don’t know this, but my daughter and i have already started to bond, so I’m sure she wouldn’t have a problem with me being here.

Abe: I do. I know what you did to paulina. And I am not comfortable having you around her, or my daughter, or my grandchildren.

Tr: Mr. Mayor, I completely understand your position and why you wouldn’t want me around. But I assure you I have changed. And I would really like to have a chance to be here for my daughter.

Julie: Lani, honey. How’s my grandson?

Lani: I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know how to–i don’t know. I don’t understand it. I–we were talking to him about what had happened, and then he started to say that–

Tr: Well, I can explain.

Lani: Explain what?

Kayla: All right, val, let’s give him one milligram of lorazepam.

Nurse: On it.

Valerie: Still seizing.

Kayla: Okay, we need to get him intubated here. Let’s start him on propofol. Stat. Move it, let’s move it.

Valerie: Readjust that.

Chanel: So I don’t know if I should be flattered or scared that you were talking to your brother about me.

Allie: Maybe a little bit of both.

Chanel: Okay, so did you tell him that we–

Allie: Slept together? Yes. I wanted him to hear it from me, and I also wanted his help.

Chanel: With what?

Allie: With figuring out what my feelings for you mean, if I’m gay.

Chanel: And what did he say?

Allie: Well, he said that he cannot answer that question for me, but he did tell me about his experience, and it was very helpful.

Chanel: How so?

Allie: Well, I thought a lot about it, and I understand now that my experience and will’s are different. Will was in the closet, and he used to sleep with women, even though he wasn’t really into it. And then when he came out and he really embraced who he was, you know, he realized he’s gay. I’m not, and I know that because I am definitely attracted to men, but I also know that I’m not completely straight because, clearly, I’m attracted to you.

Chanel: So that means…

Allie: Well, will thinks that I’m bisexual.

Chanel: And what do you think?

Allie: I think he might be right.

Shawn: Changes everything?

Beth: I just meant for a detective price. She still has her husband, thank god.

Shawn: Look, lani told me that you met with eli to discuss your relationship with tr coates.

Beth: Past relationship, and yes, that’s right.

Shawn: Well, can you tell me what was said during that meeting?

Beth: Sort of a private matter.

Shawn: Okay, I understand. All right, but someone shot and gravely injured one of my officers today. And it’s my job to find out what happened to him. Right, in order for me to do that, I need to gather as much information as possible.

Beth: I mean, I doubt anything I would say would be relevant.

Shawn: You’d be surprised ms. Howard, even if it’s the littlest thing, something that you would think that is completely unimportant, that might be what cracks this case wide open. So can you please tell me what you told detective grant? And don’t leave anything out.

Tr: Sorry, I didn’t mean to jump in like that.

Lani: What did you wanna explain?

Tr: Why I’m here. I read about what happened to eli.

Lani: Dad, I thought you said that you asked shawn not to release any information to the media.

Abe: I did. But every amateur reporter is on social media.

Lani: Yeah, I understand.

Tr: Look, lani, I didn’t mean to intrude. I mean, I know that we’ve just started to get to know one another, but I wanted to come and show my support if that’s all right with you.

Lani: It’s fine.

Julie: Can we get back to the subject of eli? You said that he was telling you about the shooting. What did he say?

Lani: He wasn’t awake. He was just murmuring things in his sleep. And then he got agitated, and then all these alarms started going off, and I don’t know. I think he had a seizure.

Julie: Oh, my god.

Lani: And then kayla asked me to leave, and valerie stayed in there to help out. But I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s happening. I don’t know.

Paulina: Oh, come over here. Oh, baby, I’m so sorry. Everything’s gonna be all right, baby.

Lani: How is he?

Kayla: Eli had a seizure caused by a subdural hemorrhage. We were able to get that under control, but I’m afraid that he is now in a coma.

[Soft music]

Kayla: As all of you probably know, it’s impossible to predict when a patient will come out of a coma. We are just going to have to let eli’s body heal itself, and then we’ll see what happens.

Lani: Can I see him?

Kayla: Of course you can.

Lani: Dad, can you please call and check in with the sitter?

Abe: Oh, yeah, don’t worry about the twins at all. I’ll make sure they’re okay.

Lani: Okay, thank you.

Paulina: Julie, julie, julie honey, I think you better sit down. Sit down. Oh, my. Everything’s gonna be all right.

Shawn: What’s going on?

Julie: Eli’s in a coma, darling.

Shawn: Oh, grandma, I’m so sorry.

Julie: Did you find out anything about the shooting?

Shawn: I’d rather not discuss this information in front of a stranger.

Tr: I’m not a stranger. I’m lani’s father.

Shawn: You’re tr coates?

Tr: That’s right.

Shawn: Shawn brady, salem pd. You know, I just interviewed your ex-girlfriend beth howard.

Paulina: Beth? I just met her earlier today. That’s your ex?

Tr: We dated a year ago. It’s been over for a while.

Paulina: Well, shawn, but why did you need to speak with her?

Shawn: Eli had just left a meeting with ms. Howard before he went to the park.

Paulina: What was the meeting about?

Shawn: Well, he had some questions about her relationship with mr. Coates here.

Tr: That’s what I figured. You told me that you got clean years ago after going to prison. You swore that you weren’t using drugs and that you had never never raised your hand again to another woman since. Well, I wanted to verify your story. Eli, he offered to help dig, take a deep dive into your past to see if you were telling the truth. Now, what did this woman have to say about her relationship with mr. Coates?

Abe: Well, I’d like to hear the answer to that myself.

Chanel: So are you comfortable identifying as bisexual?

Allie: I think so. I mean, it feels right. Is that weird? I know you’re not big on labels.

Chanel: Oh, that’s just my personal choice, but I would never judge you.

Allie: Thanks. You know, it wasn’t until i talked to will that I realized how much pressure I’ve been putting on myself. You know, to choose, to decide one or the other, gay or straight. And now I know I don’t have to do that. You know, actually, what helped me is remembering what happened with your mom.

Chanel: My mom?

Allie: Yeah, remember when she found out we kissed?

Chanel: How could I forget?

Allie: And you explained to her that you’re not gay.

Chanel: Yeah.

Allie: That sometimes you kiss girls, and sometimes you kiss boys, and I guess so do I, but some people like me, might call ourselves bisexual, and then some people like you might not. And that’s okay. I don’t know. I’m still, like, processing all this, but just seeing myself through a new lens, starting to embrace who I am. I feel good, more at peace.

Chanel: I’m happy for you, horton.

Allie: I just wish that i could’ve figured out my sexual identity before I hurt tripp the way I did.

Chanel: You didn’t mean to.

Allie: It doesn’t make it any less painful. He asked me to marry him and then found out that we’d slept together behind his back.

Chanel: Yeah, do you think there’s any chance that you–

Allie: No, no, like I said yesterday, tripp made it very clear that we are over. He asked for his ring back. And now he’s asked for all of his stuff back.

Chanel: I did talk to him. I made a plea on your behalf, but he wouldn’t listen.

Thanks for trying, dupree. You’re a good friend.

Shawn: I spoke at great length with ms. Howard, and she had a lot to say.

Abe: And?

Shawn: Well, she confirmed that last year during her six-month relationship with mr. Coates, there was no physical violence, and he was sober during the entire time they were together.

Paulina: Well, I’m very relieved to hear that.

Julie: Did this woman know why eli went into the park, why he faced off with a drug dealer?

Shawn: No, no, he just said that he had something to take care of and he’d be back soon, nothing to indicate where he was going or why.

Abe: Well, looks like we won’t have a full picture until eli wakes up.

Valerie: Come on, baby, sweetheart, you gotta stop scaring your mama like this. Come back to me, please, eli, come back. Oh, baby.

[Soft music]

Oh, baby. It’s my 5:52 woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Chanel: We’re in the same boat, horton. A part of me still loves johnny, but there is zero chance that he and I are getting back together.

Allie: So before I realized I was bisexual, I couldn’t really imagine you and me, us together as a couple. And usually, I’ll be the first one to say that jumping into a new relationship right after an old one ends is a terrible idea, but you’re my best friend, chanel. We know everything about each other, and we obviously have feelings for each other. So I don’t know, now that we’re both single, maybe this is our chance to give us a shot, you know, see if we have a future.

Chanel: As a couple?

Allie: Yeah, unless that sounds crazy.

Chanel: Oh, it definitely sounds crazy. But I absolutely love it.

[Soft music]

Shawn: Grandma, what do you say we go down the chapel and say a prayer for eli?

Julie: That sounds wonderful.

Paulina: I hope you understand why I had eli look into you.

Tr: Of course. In fact, I’m glad you did ’cause now you know I’ve been telling the truth that I’m a changed man.

Paulina: Listen–

Tr: Paulina, I’m gonna be in salem for a while. So I have plenty of time to earn your trust, which I fully intend to do, but right now we have to put our issues aside and be here for lani.

Paulina: Eli is her whole world. If she and those sweet babies lose him…

[Tense music]

Lani: Eli, baby, I love you so much, and so do carver and jules. But you take as much time as you need to recover, okay? We’re gonna be fine. The kids will be fine, I will be fine, and you will, too. I know it. I just know it. You’re gonna be okay.
