Jack: Hey, andy. I called in a take-out order.

Phyllis: Hey, jack. Hey. Good to see you. It’s a beautiful day in genoa city, isn’t it?

Jack: I suppose.

Phyllis: Ah, the sun is out. The birds are chirping. The coffee is strong.

Jack: You sure they didn’t spike that with a little something?

Phyllis: Mnh-mnh. This is all phyllis.

Jack: Then what exactly do you credit this chipper mood to? Did talia morgan write a follow-up to the article she wrote attacking diane?

Phyllis: Um, gosh, I don’t think so, but certainly if you see more articles, please tell me. It’s really, really a mood lifter.

Jack: When I first asked you if you had anything to do with that article, you flatly denied it. It’s since came to me that you were seen multiple times in the company of the reporter who wrote it. Still want to stick to your old story?

Tessa: Is everything okay?

It will be.

Tessa: Is there anything i can do?

Not unless you know how to correctly position a light.

Tessa: Not really my forte, so you go for it.

Lauren: The weather is perfect. And the location — it really meshes with the vibe that we’re going for. You know, fun, summery, romantic.

Mariah: I couldn’t agree more. And we have the perfect model.

Tessa: Oh. Do we? ‘Cause I don’t want to freak anyone out, but I am — I’m pretty nervous.

Mariah: Don’t be!

Tessa: Oh! Okay. Yeah. Sure. Got it.

Mariah: Uh, just give me a second.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Clears throat ] Hey.

Tessa: Hmm? Hi.

Mariah: Hi.

Tessa: Hi.

Mariah: There’s no reason to be nervous, okay? You look incredible. And plus, your — your inner glow is gonna shine through.

Tessa: Oh, my — my inner glow? Or all the artificial lighting?

Mariah: Maybe a little bit of both. I am just kidding. I’m messing with you. You look amazing. You’re gonna do great.

Tessa: Yeah. Yeah. It’s just, there are a lot of people here.

Mariah: Well, yeah, they’re all here to make sure that this is a success. You know, to officially launch marchetti and fenmore’s collaboration. And I couldn’t think of anybody more perfect to be the face of that.

Tessa: Thank you.

Mariah: No. Thank you.

[ Chuckles ]

Diane: Mariah, we’re going to have a few style bloggers come cover the behind-the-scenes of the shoot once we get going.

Mariah: Uh…okay. Yeah, that sounds great. Just make sure they don’t get in the way.

Diane: Oh, of course, of course. I’m so excited. I’m thrilled to be here. And you look fantastic.

Tessa: Oh, thank you.

Diane: Yeah.

Lauren: Okay. Uh, how many looks do we have?

Summer: Well, we have the top eight that we discussed previously and backups if we have time.

Lauren: Okay. You know what? Look three — can we switch out that top to something more vibrant? I think it’ll photograph better.

Summer: Yeah, of course. We have racks of alternatives and plenty of accessories, so we can switch out anything as we see fit.

Lauren: Wonderful.

[ Chuckles ]

Mariah: So, we want to start out with a fun, light feel at first and then get more romantic as looks go from casual to more formal.

I will capture as much fun and romance as the model gives me.

Tessa: Oh, she’s all business, huh?

Mariah: Well, yeah! But she’s here to work with you, you know, bring out your — your fire and your spirit and your beauty.

Tessa: What if all those things are missing in action today or they don’t exist at all?

Mariah: Well, I am looking at you right now, so that’s not possible — ’cause that’s what i see. I see fire, spirit, and beauty. Tessa, you are going to be amazing. Are you ready?

Tessa: Uh-huh.

Mariah: Okay.

Lily: Hey! Oh, my gosh.

Imani: Hi.

Lily: Welcome back.

Imani: Mm.

Lily: How’s naya?

Imani: Ah, still no change.

Billy: That’s, uh — that’s too bad. We’re sorry to hear that.

Imani: Well, thanks, guys. Thank you so much for being so supportive while amanda and i have been away.

Lily: Yeah, of course. Family always comes first.

Imani: Exactly. So, while she’s taking care of everything in virginia, I am here to focus and make sure that all of our legal matters are handled.

Lily: Okay. Great. Well, we have every bit of confidence in you.

Imani: I really appreciate that.

Lily: So, um, while amanda is with devon, I thought it’d be best if the rest of us were in the same room to discuss more pressing matters.

Imani: Alright. Sounds good.

Lily: Yeah. So nate will be joining us.

Imani: Perfect.

Nate: I’ve decided to follow my instincts and run with an idea for chancellor-winters.

Elena: While devon and amanda are both out of town?

Nate: I know it’s a bold move, but it’s the right one. Something devon can’t ignore or dismiss. He’ll finally be forced to accept that I am doing a great job in the position he hired me for.

Elena: Well, I’m sure it’s great. And you sound really excited about it. But isn’t making unilateral decisions what caused all the problems between you and devon in the first place?

Nate: [ Sighs ] And now please welcome ana montoya.

Nate: Our own music festival will be a huge revenue stream. I just know this is gonna work, so I cannot let anyone stop me, including devon. He’ll eventually realize I’m right.

Elena: I think you need to consider how devon’s gonna take this. It’s like you’re blatantly ignoring his decision, which is what he was worried about when you first brought this up, wasn’t it?

Nate: I heard all devon’s concerns, and I found ways to address them. I’m making an effort. He’s the one who’s not.

Elena: Look, I understand how frustrated you are, and I really want to see you succeed with this, but have you at least talked to lily about it?

Nate: She was excited by the prospect of having our own music festival, but devon ended all discussion. Technically, this comes under his purview, so I don’t think she felt like she could fight him on it. And I wouldn’t want to put her in that position of having devon think that she somehow sided against him, which is exactly how he would react, instead of seeing it for the great idea it is.

Elena: Nate, you need to rethink your plan. This has the potential to end very badly.

Nate: To be honest, I don’t understand your reaction lately to my work situation. When I first brought up my frustration with you, your advice was for me to walk away, instead of encouraging me to make a statement, show devon that he should take me seriously.

Elena: You should show devon? I wonder who gave you that advice.

Nate: I’ve got a meeting i got to get to. I’ll catch up with you later.

Elena: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Boy, did diane come to you crying about the article, jack? Claiming that I was the one who hatched it?

Jack: When I first came to you, you claimed you wanted nothing to do with that reporter. But that wasn’t true, was it? Because you conveniently omitted the fact that you convinced her to use diane as her subject.

Phyllis: I was just messing with diane. It’s fun to do. And, honestly, she was sitting right here. If I wanted to create problems, I would have been more discreet. And it’s diane’s own fault. She was sucking up to talia, sucking up to an investigative journalist. If she didn’t want the heat, she shouldn’t have run into the kitchen, quite honestly.

Jack: She shouldn’t have to protect herself. No one deserves to be dragged through the mud like that.

Phyllis: Oh, god, I cannot understand why you are so mad about this article. All of it has been published before. All of it. And it’s not like it wasn’t true. It’s all true. But yet again, I’m the one under suspicion for all the horrible things that diane has done and that were published in that piece.

[ Sighs heavily ]

Nikki: And the woman is still a menace.

[ Camera shutter clicking ]

[ Clicking continues ]

Could you put some life into it?

Mariah: Hey, uh, just imagine yourself at a cool brunch with your friends, you know? Give us that, like, relaxed sunday vibe.

Tessa: Um…

[ Camera shutter clicking ] Uh, I’m sorry. This isn’t working. I just need to sit down for a second.

Summer: Oh. I’ll handle it. Hey, sorry to play traffic cop, but we’re in the middle of a photo shoot here.

Adam: I heard. That’s why I’m here.

Summer: Really?

Adam: Mm-hmm. Well, since jabot owns marchetti and also has a stake in fenmore’s, as the new co-ceo, i figured I would stop by and see how it’s going.

Lily: The purchase of the grand phoenix has been finalized.

Imani: Mm-hmm. I sent the final contracts to amanda for review, but everything should be in order.

Nate: The hotel is a great acquisition for us, huge opportunity, and we should definitely capitalize on the publicity of the sale to set the new tone of the place — and to highlight the connection to the music industry.

Billy: Yeah. No, I like that idea. You can work on, uh — work on that with the P.R. Team.

Nate: Absolutely.

Lily: Yeah. So, when you have specifics, just come back and present it to us.

Nate: You got it.

Billy: Alright, next up, podcasts. The ones that we have are performing quite well. We are just in need of more content.

Nate: Can I just say, the numbers from your series were very positive. Ah, the people are gonna miss it.

Billy: I appreciate you saying that, but I’m here to focus on the big picture.

Nate: Could we possibly find someone to partner with chelsea or have her continue to do it on her own?

Billy: I think that would be a great idea. Unfortunately, chelsea has decided to step away.

Nate: Oh, okay. Uh, well, uh, I wasn’t just asking because I was wondering where to go for late-night laughs and a rumination on the human condition.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: But I think we should build on what you started. As far as creating more content, I’ve got a line on about a dozen or more podcasts we could possibly acquire from a smaller company that are ready to feed into the chancellor-winters pipeline. I sent them over to you right before the meeting.

Billy: Okay, well, that sounds great. Sounds like I’ll be having my headphones on for the rest of the afternoon.

Lily: Yeah. Wow. I’m impressed. Thank you for being so proactive.

Nate: Doing my best.

Billy: Yeah. It’s good. Listen, if I am going to be busy this afternoon listening to podcasts, can we reschedule the financial meeting for tomorrow morning?

Lily: Yeah, of course. Not a problem.

Billy: Great.

Imani: [ Clears throat ] Something’s going on with you. I can practically hear the gears turning into your head.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] You’re not wrong.

Billy: Appreciate you accommodating me.

Lily: You’re welcome.

Lauren: So, honey, when we start up again, just like, bend your knee a little, okay? It’ll get some circulation going. And breathe. You’ve got to breathe.

Tessa: Right. Uh, breathe. I forgot about that.

Lauren: [ Chuckling ] Yeah. Okay.

Summer: We really appreciate you stopping by, but the actual shoot isn’t as glamorous as people think. It’s a lot of standing around, as you can see. I’m sure you have a lot more important things to do. We have everything under control here. And I know what ceos really care about are the results.

Kyle: How’s it going?

Diane: Oh, it’s — it’s going.

Summer: I can send you the best shots later.

Kyle: Oh. I see the problem.

Adam: I’m trying to get up to speed on the different facets of the corporation. How else am I supposed to do my job?

Summer: Adam, this is tessa’s first photo shoot for marchetti, so I just think it would be best if we kept the number of people involved to a minimum.

Kyle: What summer is so politely trying to explain, because she’s good at her job and also at navigating company politics, is that we don’t need this many chefs in the kitchen.

Adam: Mm. Well, I’m not giving any opinions. I’m just observing.

Kyle: Could you give me a little moment alone with —

Summer: You know what? I’m just gonna let you handle this one, babe.

Kyle: You showed up. You observed. The best thing you can do now is to smile, give a polite wave, and wish everyone a great photo shoot. In other words, get out of the way and let the people who need to do their jobs do them.

Adam: Kyle, is this really how you want to start things off?

Phyllis: Uh, nikki and I may have, mm, joked about looking into diane’s past, but talia was working completely on her own.

Nikki: That is entirely true.

Jack: You really expect me to believe that a renowned investigative reporter changed the subject of her article from ashland locke to diane jenkins on a whim? You two may be having some fun taking potshots at her. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.

Phyllis: Ohh, are you — are you upset because we may have hurt diane’s feelings?

Nikki: You know, what I find even more disturbing is that she has clearly gotten to you to the point that you are defending her.

Jack: This is about kyle. This is honoring kyle’s decision to give his mother a second chance. And by the way, diane has gone out of her way to try to prove she is worthy of that chance by changing the way she behaves. So I don’t appreciate the two of you continuing to launch gratuitous attacks on her.

Nikki: Gratuitous? Am I supposed to forget everything she has done to me, setting me up to take the fall for her murder?

Jack: Thankfully, that didn’t happen, nikki.

Nikki: Well, it would have if she had had her way.

Jack: No one is condoning what diane did. Not me, not kyle, not even diane. She is simply trying to move on with her life. I suggest you two do the same thing. Move on. Thank you, andy.

Kyle: I don’t care what your title is. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t have to put up with you.

Adam: Well, then apparently you don’t know how companies work, kyle.

Kyle: Okay, you are a charity case. My father did you a favor for reasons I can’t fathom. But what I do know is that he went way out on a limb for you. It took a lot for him to convince the family to sign off on hiring you. And we didn’t agree to it because we thought you could bring anything of value to the company. We did it out of respect for him. And do not take that as an endorsement. And do not do anything to cause him grief while you are here, which I predict won’t be long.

Adam: Quite the warning. It’s a little aggressive, in my opinion. But why would I want to cause problems for jack? I’m only here to help him run jabot, kyle.

Kyle: It’s never that simple with you. I don’t know what your agenda is, but it’s only a matter of time until you screw up or lose interest in this walk on the wild side or whatever this is for you, but until then, your input is not welcome. You have nothing to offer, and you do not belong.

Adam: Okay. I got it. Guess I will have to prove myself to all of you. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Summer: [ Sighs ] How did that go?

Kyle: Well, jabot’s new co-ceo and I just had a meeting of the minds. I had to explain to him how things work around here. But let’s focus on the matter at hand — the new face of marchetti. It’s not going well. What’s the problem?

Lauren: Well, we’re having a problem with the direction of the shoot, and if I’m to be honest, it’s with tessa. Um, she’s coming across very self-conscious.

Mariah: She just needs time to ease into it, okay? I know tessa. She — she’s gonna be great. So, if you could just give me one minute, I’ll go talk to her, alright? Thank you.

Lily: Well, that was terrific, guys, very productive.

Billy: Yeah, it feels like we’re firing on all cylinders. And I will catch up with you about the podcasts — of course, once I listen to them all.

[ Laughter ]

Nate: Looking forward to it.

Lily: Yeah, and I can’t wait to hear details about the P.R. Plan to announce the grand phoenix.

Nate: I am on it.

[ Chuckles ]

Billy: See you guys in a bit.

Imani: Thanks, guys.

Lily: Bye. Thank you.

Imani: Appreciate it. God, nate! Oh, my god, you were on fire in there. You brought so much energy to the room.

Nate: It felt good.

Imani: [ Sighs ]

Nate: For the first time in a while.

Imani: Wow. But like I said, there’s something else going on with you, maybe something you didn’t mention?

Nate: [ Chuckles ] I’m taking your advice. I’m going to make a big move while devon’s gone.

Imani: Huh. Can I know the details?

Nate: Let’s just say I plan to generate the kind of success even devon can’t dump all over.

Lily: Nate seemed really enthusiastic, right?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah, he did. He seemed engaged and excited.

Lily: Yeah.

Billy: No negativity.

Lily: I know. I thought things had gotten so strained between him and devon that he was gonna quit, but i think he turned a corner.

Billy: Things are moving in the right direction.

Lily: Yeah, they really are.

Billy: I do want to talk to you about something. Or someone. It’s about chelsea. (Vo) red lobster’s finer points of fun dining

Tessa: [ Sighs ] I can feel everyone’s eyes on us.

Mariah: Ignore them.

Tessa: I’m sorry that I’m slowing everything down. Am I just, like, totally blowing this?

Mariah: No, you are not, so don’t even let that thought creep into your head, okay? I have every confidence in you. I’m not concerned at all.

Tessa: Uh, are you seeing what’s going on right now?

Mariah: Yes. But I know you better than anyone else. Do you remember when you were shooting your music video, how miserable you were, how nervous you were?

Tessa: Actually, I don’t really remember that day. It was such a blur. But I — I do remember that you came up with something really wonderful at the end of the day.

Mariah: No. You did. And that’s exactly how today’s gonna go. You just need to get into the right headspace. Tessa, you are a literal rock star, okay? You have music flowing through every fiber of your being. And when you were doing the music video shoot, all you had to do was forget about yourself and just feel your music. That’s when the magic happened.

Tessa: I hear you.

Mariah: Yeah?

Tessa: Yeah. I’d kiss you right now, but i don’t want to ruin my makeup.

Mariah: [ Laughs ]

Tessa: Because I got a photo spread to do.

Mariah: Alright, everybody! We are ready to go!

Tessa: [ Exhales heavily ]

Summer: There she is!

[ Camera shutter clicking ] You know, you really saved the day.

Mariah: I wasn’t worried. I know my wife. And now the rest of the world is gonna see, yet again, how truly special she is.

[ Clicking continues ]

Billy: Oh, chelsea was just pulling her life back together after her break-up with adam. And they have a kid together, so you know — that’s hard to avoid. And then she’s got to go and watch adam chase after sally? She has this relationship with rey. He’s kind with her, he’s caring towards her, and then he gets ripped out of her life, and then her relationship with chloe falls apart. That’s a lot of blows to take back to back.

Lily: Yeah, it is. And then you walked away from the podcast.

Billy: Yeah. Which is still the right decision, but I know for chelsea that was more than just a job for her. And then I shut her down when she asked to spend more time with johnny, too.

Lily: Well, I mean, that’s understandable. She kind of sprung it on you out of the blue.

Billy: Yeah. No. I mean, there is that. And having that conversation at the time just seemed out of the question. But now that I think about it, I can see chelsea’s point. My priority is johnny, making sure that he’s okay, but I know that he’s gonna want to know who his biological mother is. When that is, I don’t know. I guess the best thing I can do is allow them to spend some time together, you know, even if it’s the context of johnny and connor hanging out. What do you think?

Lily: Well, I mean, I think it’s a really lovely gesture. And as someone who has also had to deal with my own complicated family dynamic later in life, i know what johnny is gonna have to go through. So I think that it’s right to start dealing with it now, even if it’s just baby steps, because that way, when you do finally tell johnny about chelsea, he’ll know that she cared.

Billy: And it will bring her some joy. I have to say, when I see chelsea now, it’s like some of the light has gone out of her eyes.

Chelsea: I’m sorry to get your hopes up, mom, but connor and I aren’t coming to stay. Adam won’t allow it. No, no, I’m not going back to the podcast. I’ve already told billy. I can’T. My decision is final. I don’t know what I’m gonna do next. Mom, I got to go, okay? I’ll talk to you soon. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.

Elena: Imani. You’re back. How’s your mom doing?

Imani: Still no change.

Elena: I’m sorry to hear that. I know how hard that can be. I will keep her in my prayers.

Imani: Thank you.

Elena: Well, I should get going.

Imani: Elena? I’m actually just coming from a meeting with nate.

Elena: Oh?

Imani: Yeah. Oh, my god. He is so good. He’s excited about his job in a way that I have never seen before.

Elena: Oh, that’s great to hear.

Imani: Really? Wow. I wasn’t sure how you’d react because nate told me that you wanted him to quit. Ohh. [ Laughs ] Are you upset that he shared that with me?

Elena: Is that why you told me? Because you were hoping I would be upset?

Imani: I don’t know what you mean.

Elena: I think you do.

Imani: [ Scoffs ]

Elena: And it makes me wonder what else you’re hoping for when it comes to nate.

Imani: You are so overreacting.

Elena: I don’t think I am. I see you, imani. I see exactly what you’re doing, and I would encourage you to stop.

Lauren: Well, what started as a rocky photo shoot ended up as an unqualified success.

Summer: Thanks in part to the way that kyle dealt with adam.

Kyle: Well, and the way mariah calmed down tessa.

Lauren: Oh, yeah. Mariah certainly knows how to reach her wife.

Kyle: Mm.

Summer: They have that connection that married people have.

Lauren: Aww. Now, I’ve been married a lot longer than the two of you, and I still have that connection. So, call me in a decade, okay?

Summer: You and michael are marriage goals.

Kyle: Ooh, respect.

Lauren: Ah, yes! [ Laughs ]

Summer: All in all, today was so worth it. I mean, the pictures exude light and joy and love, and that’s exactly what we were going for.

Kyle: Hey, if the creative director is happy, I am happy.

Lauren: And I just thought tessa looked exquisite in all the clothes. And I could not be more thrilled that fenmore’s is the exclusive american retailer for the line.

Kyle: Mm.

Lauren: [ Sighs ] I just — I’m so impressed with the two of you, the way you’ve made over marchetti. I mean, the fashion house just seems fresh. And the designer that took over for chelsea — oh! Spectacular!

Summer: Oh, we are so happy with him.

Kyle: His designs are amazing.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Adam: Diane.

Diane: Adam.

Adam: How’d the rest of the shoot go after I left?

Diane: Much better.

Adam: Should I take that personally?

Diane: No. There were a number of factors at work, but I think it ended up coming together quite nicely.

Adam: Good.

Diane: Yeah, I can imagine everyone is sharing a collective sigh of relief.

Adam: Mm. Well, it looked like the P.R. Side of things was under control.

Diane: Thank you. Things went smoothly.

Adam: Mm.

Diane: It was kind of a full-circle moment for me because years ago, before you came to town, I, um — I modeled for jabot.

Adam: Well, maybe we can bring back some of those classic campaigns, you know? Would you like to see your face on a billboard again?

Diane: Oh, god, no. I have already been foisted into the public eye against my will.

Adam: Yeah, I saw that article. I, uh, know firsthand what it’s like to have all your past deeds exposed. Um…it sucks.

Diane: Well, that’s an understatement, but thanks for the understanding.

Adam: Yeah.

Diane: It’ll be nice to have an ally in the building.

Adam: That goes both ways.

Diane: Yeah.

Adam: So, what were you doing in the office? Were you filling in jack on today?

Diane: Oh, no. I was dropping off a list of the bloggers that covered the shoot, along with some potential fashion sites we can send the photos to. Oh, I believe I have a copy for you right here.

Adam: Oh, well, thank you for acknowledging I have an actual job here.

Diane: [ Sighs ] Yeah. I — I didn’t hear what kyle said to you earlier, but I didn’t need to. I’m — I’m sorry. That must have been disappointing.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, to put it mildly.

Diane: Okay. Uh, insulting? Infuriating?

Adam: Eh, you’re getting a little warmer.

Diane: I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of that sort of thing.

Adam: Yeah, it almost felt like I was talking to victoria. You know, I left newman media and my family to get away from judgment and condescension. It seems like I might have just, uh, swapped it out for a different variety.

Diane: I hear you. The only reason phyllis sold her hotel and came to work for marchetti was so that she could spearhead some secret, backstabbing plot against me.

Phyllis: Who the hell convinced talia’s editor to kill all future stories on diane?

Nikki: I don’t know. I mean, could she have done it herself?

Phyllis: Diane doesn’t have that kind of clout.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Maybe jack used his influence.

Phyllis: Mnh-mnh, mnh-mnh. I refuse to believe that jack is that far gone. I refuse to believe it. Besides, he seemed genuinely concerned that there were more articles to come. Nikki, I cannot believe that this phase in our plan has been stopped in its tracks.

Nikki: Okay, well, it’s not our only phase. You’re supposed to be working your angle inside marchetti.

Phyllis: I am.

Nikki: Okay. Good. In the meantime, I have decided another approach for our problem.

Phyllis: Okay, you want to be more specific?

Nikki: Next week, I am going to los angeles… to see deacon sharpe. Hi, my name’s steve.

Tessa: Hi.

Mariah: Hey.

Tessa: I had you all pretty worried there for a sec, huh?

Mariah: Not me. Not for a second.

Tessa: Poor lauren.

Mariah: [ Laughs ] She was thrilled, by the way, with everything, the way that it turned out — and summer and kyle. You were, like, the glam model of their fantasies.

Tessa: Mm. How about you?

Mariah: Oh, the fantasies that I have… you at home, your bunny slippers, that dirty hoodie that you wear to work out.

Tessa: I wash it sometimes.

[ Both laugh ]

Mariah: I love you in it. And out of it. High fashion or no fashion at all.

Tessa: How lucky are we?

Mariah: The luckiest.

Elena: I see what’s going on here. And yet I continue to give you the benefit of the doubt. I have put up with your flirting and your little digs. But this? This could actually hurt nate’s relationship with devon, not to mention cause him to lose his job and his connection with his entire family.

Imani: Look, I am just trying to encourage nate to follow his potential.

Elena: By going behind devon’s back and doing exactly what he asked him not to?

Elena: [ Scoffs ]

Imani: Well, obviously I have more faith in nate as a businessman than you do.

Nate: Wanted to let you know we’re moving forward with the music festival. Yes, I understand it would be costly to cancel, but I am focused on the upside, which will be tremendous. I’m getting the performance contracts started, and I found land to lease. Let’s make this happen.

Chelsea: Johnny, I am sorry connor didn’t even say hi. He jumped in that pool before I’d even turned around.

Johnny: Can I go swimming, too?

Billy: Yes, you can, but can you please say hello first?

Johnny: Hi.

Chelsea: Hi. Your dad tells me you’re a great swimmer.

Johnny: Yeah, I’m pretty good, I guess.

Chelsea: Oh, do you have on enough sunscreen?

Johnny: Yeah. I put on a ton.

Billy: Uh, okay, why don’t you go say hi to connor? You don’t have to listen to our boring conversation. Let me see your best cannonball.

Johnny: Cool. Thanks.

Billy: Alright.

Johnny: Connor!

Chelsea: Oh, be careful! Wow.

Billy: Ahh.

Chelsea: Eee. Well…

Billy: That was close.

Chelsea: It was really close. Thank you for this. It’s really special seeing them together. Sometimes I think having connor was the only good thing I’ve ever done. Well, that and making sure johnny has a wonderful family. That’s something, too.

Billy: Well, I hope you’re feeling better than you were the last time we talked.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] This helps a lot. And as far as the other stuff goes, I’m just taking it one day at a time.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Diane: The difference between you and me is that you have no specific enemies at jabot.

Adam: Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Kyle wasn’t warm and fuzzy. And, um, you know, ashley — she will always hate me. And I’m sure that billy makes his displeasures known any chance he gets.

Diane: True, but none of them are actively trying to undermine you, which means that you have a shot of winning people over. I’ve — I’ve made a little progress in that area because there are a few who are willing to give me a chance to prove that I’m sincere.

[ Scoffs ] But phyllis will never change the way she thinks about me because, with phyllis, you’re an enemy for life.

Phyllis: Oh, my god. What? Deacon sharpe? Oh, my god.

Nikki: Alright, alright, will you please stop? I don’t need to hear about your history with him. Unless it could be useful?

Phyllis: Uh…it’s not memorable. I’ll just say that. Um… but I don’t understand. If talia can’t write any more stories about diane, why do you have to meet with deacon sharpe?

Nikki: She thinks she might be able to change her editor’s mind if deacon has something juicy to add. I mean, I don’t know. He could have so much dirt on her that she could write a whole book about diane.

Phyllis: Oh, my god, that would be amazing. Nikki, I — I have to ask you. Are you up for this? I mean, deacon is the one who helped diane fake her own death and that you were up on murder charges. Can you handle this?

Nikki: I can definitely handle it. And it’s long overdue.

Jack: How many of those do you have a day?

Billy: I’m sure you’re aware, sharon’s daughter just left for college.

Jack: Yeah, she’s in michigan. Great school. Go blue.

Billy: I’ve paid half her tuition, one coffee at a time.

Jack: [ Chuckles ] I’m sure sharon appreciates that.

Billy: So, I assume you’re here for a little afternoon pick-me-up, sorting through all the personnel changes at jabot.

Jack: Yes, now that we’ve acquired marchetti, I have a few more faces and names I have to remember.

Billy: Yeah, sure, but I’m talking about one employee in particular.

Jack: I knew exactly what you were talking about.

Billy: Adam’s been on the job for about 3 hours now. Has he burned the place down?

Jack: Hasn’t caused any problems, and I’m not going to discuss him with you anymore. No, because you are so wise about business, though, I’d like to tap your brain about a couple of other subjects.

Billy: [ Laughing ] Oh. Really? Me?

Jack: I’d like to know about chancellor-winters’ purchase of the grand phoenix.

Billy: Sure. What do you want to know?

Abby: Chloe. Hi. I haven’t seen you in a while.

Chloe: Yeah, I don’t think that we’ve talked since tessa and mariah’s wedding.

Abby: Oh, my gosh, I can’t believe it’s been that long. I was so excited to see your name on an order.

Chloe: Oh, that’s so sweet.

Abby: Unfortunately, the kitchen is a little backed up, so can I offer you a drink while you wait — on the house?

Chloe: That’s great. I’ll just take a soda water with lemon, since I have to get back to the office.

Abby: You got it. Have you been working long hours these days?

Chloe: Yeah, we’re just still trying to find our footing. But it’s going well.

Abby: Well, if chance’s schedule is any indication, I’m sure kevin has been working long hours on this ashland case. It’s been taking up so much time.

Chloe: Yeah, kevin has been working very long hours.

Abby: [ Sighs ] I’m just so glad that the case is finally closed.

Chloe: Me too.

Abby: Maybe now we can spend some quality time with our husbands.

Chloe: Yeah, 100%. Uh, but I hope chance and kevin can get past their tension.

Abby: That tension?

Adam: You want to go visit your mom?

Chelsea: That’s right.

Adam: And you want connor to go with you?

Chelsea: Yeah. Anita loves seeing him. He loves seeing her. It’s been a while.

Adam: Where is this idea coming from?

Chelsea: I’ve been thinking about it for some time. I need to get out of genoa city for a bit.

[ Sighs ] You know that feeling where the walls are closing in on you?

Adam: Sure. Yeah, it would be a good idea to get out of here so you can clear your head? But connor doesn’t need to go with you.

Chelsea: I’m going to see his grandmother. I want him with me.

Adam: Listen to me. Chelsea, connor just got back from camp. I mean, school is starting soon. It’s just not really a good time.

Chelsea: I’ve barely spent any time with him this summer. I just want to spend some time with my son.

Adam: Okay, well, I have barely spent 10 minutes with him since he’s been home. I mean, there’s just so much to do before school starts. Unless you’re thinking about a lengthier move, in which case, the answer is absolutely no.

Chance: Well, hey, beautiful.

Abby: Hi, babe.

Chance: Yeah, I finished work a little early today, and I was thinking of stopping by getting a drink. What do you say? Me, you, glass of wine, maybe throw it in a sippy cup in honor of our picnic.

Abby: [ Chuckles ] I would like that. I’m just finishing up here, so your timing is perfect.

Chance: For a change.

Abby: Well, come on over. I will save you a seat at the end of the bar.

Chance: Okay.

Sally: Chance. So glad I ran into you.

Chance: Sally. Hi. I actually have to take off right now.

Sally: Oh, it won’t take long. Mind if I have a seat?

Chance: You know, I, un — really don’t have the time right now.

Sally: It’s only gonna take a few minutes. Besides, don’t you want to thank me?

Adam: [ Sighs ] How long are we talking, chelsea? Two days, three?

Chelsea: I’m not sure, but it wouldn’t really necessarily be a quick trip. I need time away. You know, the last time I brought connor to visit my mom, it helped me reset my perspective. I came back to genoa city much more grounded, and connor really likes it there. He and anita have a connection.

Adam: And what about school?

Chelsea: I mean, his old boarding school is there. He could re-enroll as a day student.

Adam: Chelsea, he’s happy. Here. His soccer season starts. He has friends here. I mean, we can’t disrupt the beginning of a school year like that.

Chelsea: I would make sure this didn’t disrupt anything for him. You just need to trust me.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Chelsea, he’s not going, okay? You clearly have not thought this through.

Chelsea: Why can’t you just take my word that I need this right now? Adam, I’m not feeling great. I-I-I feel like I’m heading towards those emotional issues…again. I feel like that’s the direction the current is taking me. I know the signs, and you’ve seen them, too.

Adam: Okay.

Chelsea: I feel like I’m — I’m — [Sniffles] I’m in a fast-moving river a-and I can’t find my footing and I can’t grab onto anything, and I-I need a change.

Adam: Okay, and I appreciate you telling me that. It’s a healthy step, but, chelsea, listen to yourself. Connor’s not a life preserver. He’s a kid, and fixing his mom, it’s not his job.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Billy: So, what would you like to know about chancellor-winters’ purchasing phyllis’ hotel?

Jack: For starters, congratulations. It’s a sterling property.

Billy: Okay, good. I will pass that along.

Jack: I would like to open an exclusive jabot boutique on the premises. It sounds like lily is trying to cater to a more sophisticated, artistic clientele, and jabot seems a perfect fit.

Billy: It’s a very interesting idea, but why are we talking about it?

Jack: What do you mean?

Billy: Jack, you could have shot me an e-mail saying, “I want to open up a boutique in the hotel,” done.

Jack: I’m not sure what your point is.

Billy: Well, I think you’re trying to change the subject. You’re trying to divert the conversation away from adam.

Jack: Okay, maybe I am. I don’t want to talk any more about my hires. They’re my hires. I’m running showboat.

Billy: It’s very convenient for you, jack, but you don’t understand.

Jack: I understand that he caused you pain. I understand you are hurt every time he walks into a room. But, billy, I have to support adam now. I have to make sure he is a success at jabot.

Billy: And what, you’re suggesting I do the same?

Jack: I would never presume to tell you what to do. Could we get back to the subject at hand? I wanted to talk to you about this boutique because you’re the ceo. If you’d rather I just talk to lily, just tell me so. Apparently, you’re very busy with your podcast.

Billy: Wow, your ability to be passive-aggressive, yet civil and cordial, while ripping me apart is actually impressive.

Jack: I apologize for the tone. Look, I’m standing by the sentiment. You seem to be more caught up in your creative pursuits than you are in your job.

Billy: Well, then you’re gonna be really happy to hear that I have retired from the podcast game.

Jack: Really?

Billy: Yeah, I’m walking away from the microphone in order to be the best C.O.O. I can be for chancellor-winters.

Abby: Chance is on his way over. I want to ask him about kevin, s-since I don’t want to put you in an awkward position if you don’t want to talk about it.

Chloe: I just don’t want to cause any trouble where there is none. Kevin was just venting about how he was putting in a lot of hours on the ashland case. I really don’t know anything. I just should have kept my big mouth shut.

Abby: No, I’m glad you didn’T. I didn’t know there was any tension.

Chloe: Well, the good news is, the case, and all of rey’s cases, are closed, so we will be seeing our husband’s more often.

Abby: Although you are heading back to the office, and I am still here at work, so maybe it’s not all the guys’ fault.

Chloe: That is true. And I imagine running this place takes a lot of time. You know, I’m — I’m hoping that my long hours at the office are just temporary.

Abby: How’s it going over there, ms. C.O.O.? Do you like it?

Chloe: I — I love the job. I’m loving all the work, but…

Abby: But what?

Chloe: I hate dealing with your brother constantly hanging around.

Abby: Nick? Well, I’m sure overseeing newman media is part of his new job.

Chloe: No, the other one.

Abby: Oh, uh, him. Why is adam hanging around?

Chloe: I don’t know. He’s got some sort of hold on sally, and it just makes my job more difficult when the C.E.O. Is distracted. Not to mention my best friend is chelsea, and she is always irritated by him.

Abby: Oh, I thought that ship had sailed. I thought chelsea was gonna move on.

Chloe: Well, you know adam. He wreaks havoc on all of his exes’ lives. Sally is a mess because of him.

Abby: I don’t have any sympathy for her. She knew the risks. She deserves what she gets for sliding into bed with adam.

Sally: I did not fall into adam’s trap.

Chance: Good for you. What exactly did he try to pull?

Sally: Oh, he came to me with a promise of concrete evidence of victor’s involvement in covering up ashland’s death. And he talked to me about how career-making a story this could be. But I know adam well enough to suspect his motives were more about going after his father than catapulting me to success.

Chance: And what exactly do you want from me?

Sally: Well, I sensed, after our last conversation, that you’re a real truth-and-justice kind of guy, so I’m guessing you had to make a hard decision, just like I did.

[ Inhales deeply ] I brought adam’s offer to victoria and nick, because it was my responsibility to let them know.

Chance: Okay, so, I really don’t have a lot of time. Why are you telling me this?

Sally: Well, I don’t have an agenda, unlike adam. I just thought maybe we were kindred spirits. I thought maybe we should commiserate about making hard choices since you were in the same position I was. I mean, you shut down the case in spite of all of the evidence. In the end, you know, we both realized that the right thing to do was to just tow the newman family line. Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Chance: I actually don’t see it that way at all. I did not toe any family line. I just did my job.

Sally: But your decision lined up with what the newmans wanted?

Chance: No, I closed my case based on the evidence that I had. I could not prosecute anyone based on that evidence. Now, remember, I am the expert on what makes a good case. Adam is not.

Sally: Okay. Maybe we’re not simpatico. We just came to similar conclusions in a similar fashion, but your reasons were different. Truth and justice and all.

Chance: Think you’re getting it now.

Sally: Totally. Well, I’m moving on and I’m putting the issue to bed. I’m sure you’re happy to put the issue behind you, as well, given all the family dynamics at play.

Chance: Sally, a man lost his life in this situation. Let’s not forget that. Yes, he was a terrible human being, but this investigation was still taken very seriously. Now it is closed, and I am very glad that it is closed. And I just hope everyone involved can just put it behind them.

Sally: It’s really good to see you.

[ Sighs ]

Jack: I got to say, I’m surprised. I thought you loved your podcast.

Billy: I did. But lily was right when she pointed out that I was spending too much of my attention on the podcast.

Jack: So you’re giving up something you enjoy to concentrate on business?

Billy: I get it, jack. You don’t believe it?

Jack: Well, your corporate career has never exactly been your top priority.

Billy: Yeah, sure, but, uh, what can I say? It is now. Being the chief operating officer to support lily’s vision of this new company is exactly where I want to be.

Jack: And that’s a good change.

Billy: Yeah, I think it is, jack. It’s a good position for me. I feel at home. Working with lily and her family is very rewarding. They’re really good people. And on top of that, I’m continuing my mother’s legacy.

Jack: And that means a lot.

Billy: Yeah, it means a lot.

Jack: Billy, I know you think of yourself as a great poker player, but I feel like I’m getting a good read on you.

Billy: Is that right? You think I’m bluffing?

Jack: Not completely, but i think you’re working very hard to convince yourself.

Billy: Well, either you’re not hearing me correctly or you’re projecting.

Jack: I’m projecting? How so?

Billy: I think you’re feeling really nervous about the recent corporate hires, and you’re projecting your insecurities on me.

Jack: I didn’t realize I was being so transparent.

Billy: Jack, got to look a little deeper. You’ll find it.

Jack: I’m not so sure. Look, I’m very happy you are now focused on your business career.

Billy: Are you really?

Jack: Yes, I am. Hey, I have a long track record in business, and maybe you’ve heard about it. There is not a corporate boardroom situation that I have not faced.

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Jack: I would like to be there to help you if you could use some help.

Billy: Right, of course, jack, because where the hell would I be without the wise, wise words of mr. Jack abbott?

Adam: Chelsea. I think you may need more than a visit with your mom to set you on the right path. I mean, if it’s as bad as you say it is, I think you should get back into therapy.

Chelsea: I don’t need it.

Adam: Would you think about it? You never completed therapy, because you convinced the judge to let you out of the psychiatric treatment facility so you could go help anita. You never faced whatever it is at the core of your issues.

Chelsea: Mm, you mean the reason I’m unstable?

Adam: Chelsea, will you please not put words in my mouth? I have been understanding. I know how hard you took rey’s death, and I know your career has taken some turns lately. I’m trying to empathize. So, why are you snapping at me? I’m trying to help.

Chelsea: Because I’m so sick of the way you talk down to me. Do you hear yourself? “Oh, poor little chelsea doesn’t even realize what’s wrong with her.”

Adam: Okay, I think you’re making a lot of unfair assumptions about what I’m really thinking.

Chelsea: Mm, mm. You know, it’s really ironic that you’re the one pushing me to get therapy, considering most people would agree I’m this way because of you. But I don’t blame you for my problems. I don’T. I take responsibility for my mistakes. And I know I almost lost connor because of them. So all I’m asking is for a little bit of alone time with my son.

Adam: Chelsea, you just — you know it’s not that simple. Okay? If you are as adrift as you say you are, you know that I can’t let you go away with connor when you’re in this state. You can’t run from this. You need to stay here and deal with the issues. I’m trying to help you.

Chelsea: All I know is, you are vindictive and petty and judgmental. And if it weren’t for connor, I’d wish to god I never met you.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Sally: What was that about?

Adam: It was — it was nothing.

Sally: Didn’t look like nothing to me.

Adam: I’m really concerned about her.

Sally: What do you think the issue is?

Adam: I’m not sure. That’s part of the problem. I thought she was making progress, and she’s just been so erratic lately. It’s like one minute we’re having a nice conversation about connor, and then a few seconds later, she’s flying off the handle.

Sally: I’ve been on the receiving end of some of that anger. She’s always completely awful to me, but [Inhaling deeply] I can see that you’re concerned.

Adam: Well, I’m concerned about my son being around someone with a hair-trigger like chelsea. It’s not good for a kid.

Sally: What are you gonna do?

Adam: Well, I’ll tell you what I’m not gonna do, is let her take my son out of town to see her mother.

Sally: Is that what the conversation was about?

Adam: Yes. And when I said no, she didn’t take it well.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Abby: Chelsea? Are you okay?

Chelsea: Hi, abby. I’m fine. I just…

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry. Um… actually, I’m not fine. And come to think of it, I’m not sorry.

[ Chuckles ] I’m so sick of apologizing. I feel like I’ve been doing that a lot lately. The truth is, um, I’m not okay. No, I’m not okay, and I haven’t been okay in a long time — probably for months, actually. Yeah. Yeah. Since rey died. I was finally starting to feel normal, starting to enjoy my life again, and then the accident happened, and nothing has been okay ever since. Everything has been a complete mess, and then I’m doing this podcast with billy. And I was really enjoying it, you know? And then it just got yanked away from me, after I shared my deepest, darkest secrets with the world. Ha! It’s like, I think I just — I just feel really lonely. I think I feel lonely. And every time I start to make a connection with somebody, it blows up in my face. So I’m definitely not fine. And I just think I need all of the amateur therapists in town to stop telling me what to do, you know, and how to take care of myself, because they have no idea what I’ve been going through. So what I really need is for everybody to keep their opinions to themselves. What I really need is for everybody to just shut up!

[ Gasps ]

Jack: Look, I don’t want to offer unwelcome advice.

Billy: But here I am, about to get a whole load of it.

Jack: Will you allow me a well-earned observation?

Billy: Yes, please. What is it?

Jack: Okay, I say this because I care. I have known you your whole life. I am saying this out of concern.

Billy: You’re tap-dancing, jack. Just spit it out.

Jack: As much as I hate to admit it, I think you and i would agree that you are not well-suited to corporate life. You’ve given it your best shot. Invariably, you either get bored and walk away, or you blow things up. I know this firsthand. I’ve giving you jobs at jabot, and it never quite worked out. You get bored and you walk, or you self-sabotage. And it just seems to me, that’s not where your passions lie. And I think you should be wary of history repeating itself.

Billy: [ Sighs ] Well, you can’t run away from your history, can you? You know, jack, I’ve made some pretty significant changes.

Jack: I know you’ve changed.

Billy: I walked away from that podcast in order to break the cycle of this story that you keep reminding me of, to make sure that I show up and do the job that lily needs me to do.

Jack: That lily needs.

Billy: Yes. Yeah, jack.

Jack: What about what you need? What about what you want? I’m serious. Is being C.O.O. Of chancellor-winters your dream job? Is — is that what you want? Who says you have to spend more on skincare

Billy: [ Sighs ] So, you want to know my dream job? That’s easy. Professional gambler.

Jack: Aw.

Billy: Sitting at that table, cards out in front of you, millions of dollars. It’s a hard way to make an easy living. Football season starting soon. Horses are always running. See the lines, you see the spreads, and I know exactly where to pick the weak spot.

Jack: And that’s the dream? Playing cards, betting on sports?

Billy: Well, jack, that’s what you want to hear. That’s how you think of me, as a gambling addict, so I might as well lean into it, right? But don’t worry, because I know I can’t, because I am very aware of my history.

Jack: Good. I’m glad to hear that. Someone’s long-term plans do matter, though. Look, anytime I hire someone at a high-level position at jabot, I want to know they’re there because they want to be there, not just ’cause it’s a step along the way.

Billy: So you’re saying that you wouldn’t hire me at jabot, because I have outside interests?

Jack: It would be a consideration in my determination, yes.

Billy: Jack, [Sighs] It’s just the audacity is, you’re saying that you wouldn’t hire me at jabot because of my history, yet you go and hire someone like adam. Are you aware of the ways that he has hurt people in your family?

Jack: I don’t know why you’re being so defensive. I’m trying to help you.

Billy: Helping me by pointing out all the terrible things that I’ve done —

Jill: Billy, billy, I know you hate adam. I know you will never forgive him for causing delia’s death. That’s never going to change. But I don’t think you’re upset because I hired adam at jabot.

Billy: No, you’re right, jack, I’m not upset, I’m furious.

Jack: This isn’t about adam. This is about you and me. You think I have more faith in adam than I have in you.

Billy: Because you do.

Jack: That is not true. Adam and I have been friends for a long time. I have been there to support him in a way victor couldn’T. You are my brother. There is no comparison. I will always be on your side. My god, I hope you know that.

Sally: I get that you want to protect your son. And I would never second-guess your judgment about what’s best for connor. But he is chelsea son, too.

Adam: You think I should have let him go?

Sally: Not at all. I-I’m just saying that [Sighs] I get where she’s coming from. I may even feel a little bad for her.

Adam: Wow. That’s — that’s a surprise.

Sally: I know what it’s like to feel alone and cut off from family. Life can be hard. You can feel isolated and despondent, and it can mess with your head.

Adam: If you’re saying that I caused you those feelings, I’m sorry, sally.

Sally: I’m not fishing for another apology, and I’m not about to let your issues with chelsea lead me to forgiving you. You have to earn that on your own.

Adam: Mm-hmm. And I accept that.

Sally: I’m just letting you know that I can see her side of it. May not want to hear it, but… tough. I have to get back to the office. I will see you around.

Adam: Yeah.

Abby: Chelsea, I’m really sorry that you’re going through a rough patch.

Chelsea: No, I’m really sorry for dumping all that on you.

Abby: I thought you weren’t apologizing anymore.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] Uh, well, I’m not apologizing when I don’t mean it, but I do mean it when it comes to you, because you’re just being nice. I’m not really myself these days. Um… mmm! Ah. Adam and I just got in an argument. He was one of the people telling me how I should handle my emotions.

Abby: It’s so funny, chloe was just here talking about the havoc that adam wreaks in people’s lives.

Chelsea: Oh, chloe’s favorite hobby is complaining about adam. But she’s not wrong.

Abby: Chelsea, I’ve been hoping for you to find a happier, healthier relationship than what you had with adam.

Chelsea: Yeah, I’m hoping for the same thing, abby. And trust me, I’m not getting back together with him. No way. It’s just co-parenting is tricky. We have to do it for connor’s sake. And now we’re fighting over the fact that I want to bring him to go visit my mom.

Abby: And he won’t let you?

Chelsea: No, and I don’t understand what the big deal is, but he’s firmly against it.

Abby: Well, I am not going to offer my opinion on that.

Chelsea: Why? Because you don’t want another outburst by me?

Abby: No, because I have had my own share of outbursts recently; and family stuff, it can be hard to navigate.

Chelsea: Yeah, I’ll drink to that. Mmm. And I’ll take another one of these. Ooh. [ Sighs ] (Dog barking) we love our pets.

Abby: Hi.

Abby: She’s had a bad day, and I don’t think she should drive herself home. And she’s had a couple of drinks on an empty stomach.

Chance: Is she okay?

Abby: Whatever you do, do not ask her that. I made that mistake earlier, and apparently she is tired of people wondering about her mental state. It’s a delicate situation.

Chance: Hmm. Why don’t we just call her a cab?

Abby: I think she’d be offended. She’s not drunk. She just shouldn’t drive herself home. I think, if detective chancellor offered her a ride, she’d be more receptive. What do you think? You could go work your charms?

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: Hey. I got us some lunch.

Sally: Thanks. Hey, have you checked in with chelsea lately?

Chloe: Why, have the two of you had another argument?

Sally: No, I’m just worried about her.

Chloe: Chelsea? You’re worried about chelsea lawson?

Sally: Yeah. I walked in on some big fight she was having with adam in the park, and she just seemed totally on edge. And she said that she wished she’d never met adam.

Chloe: Because this is what he does to the women that he’s involved with.

Sally: That is an exaggeration. Adam and sharon seem to be in a really good place. In fact, she’s even rooting for us to work things out.

Chloe: Yeah, well, she’s the only one.

Sally: But they’re friends now. That’s my point.

Chloe: Sharon can tolerate him now, but it has taken them years to get there. He is so destructive that it causes repercussions long after the relationship is over. And that is the ugly truth about adam. You can love him and you can trust him, and when he ends things, it gets ugly. And even after you’ve broken up, he can still ruin your life.

Chance: Excuse me. Is the sea taking her?

Chelsea: Hi! Hi! My guru is here!

Chance: Good to see you again.

Abby: Guru?

Chelsea: Oh, your husband was awesome. He totally, like, talked me out of one of my moods the other day, and I — I was, like, literally trying to convince her to be my personal guru, but I guess he’s busy these days being a detective.

Chance: Oh, you know what? That’s not it. I just don’t like the title “guru.” See, if I’m gonna be called something I’m not, I think I’m going for “superhero.”

Chelsea: Well, I’m not revoking it. Not gonna happen. Oh, unless — tell him, abby — unless you ask me how I’m doing, because apparently you’re not allowed to ask me that question. Ask your wife. I just gave her an earful. So you don’t want to go there.

Chance: Well, you know what? I wouldn’t even dream of it. Hey, so, anyways, me and abby are about to get out of here, and we both have our cars, so I can give you a ride.

Chelsea: [ Gasps ] Oh, that — that’s fine. I’m good. I’M… I actually should probably be going. It’s been a day. Whoo!

Chance: Oh, hey.

Chelsea: I’m fine. I’m good.

Chance: Hey, look, my car’s right out front. It’s really no worry.

Chelsea: Is this one of those scenarios where I get in a cop car and we end up at a police station?

Chance: I don’t think so. Have you done anything illegal lately?

Chelsea: No, I’ve been good. I just — I’m just a little lightheaded because I hadn’t eaten, and abby made me some of her delicious cocktails. So thank you, abby.

Abby: Well, you’re welcome. I hope you get home safe.

Chelsea: Are you sure it’s not a bother?

Chance: It’s not a big deal. Come on, let’s go. I got you.

Chelsea: Bye.

Abby: Good night.

Chelsea: Ooh.

Chance: Ooh, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Ready? You okay?

Chelsea: Yeah.

Abby: [ Mouths words ]

Sally: Okay, I think what you’re saying isn’t really specific to adam. I mean, you could say that about any relationship that’s ever ended. First, there’s love and trust, and then there’s pain and then feeling like your life is ruined when everything ends.

Chloe: Okay, I get that it sounds somewhat typical, but when it comes to adam, it’s taken to the extreme.

Sally: Okay, I can’t keep going over this with you. It’s like you’re obsessed with him. You went behind my back to talk with him about me.

Chloe: I’m just trying to protect you and all of my friends. And you know what? If you’re fine, I’m good, because I am honestly tired of it, too.

Sally: Come on, chloe. It’s just exhausting. I can’t spend too much time thinking about how horrible my ex is. It’s just a waste of energy. We have way too much to do to have this conversation five times a day.

Ashley: I agree 100%. So let’s finish our lunch, get back to work, so we can finally go home to see our…

Sally: Our what? Our families, significant others?

Chloe: I-I didn’t mean anything.

Sally: I know. I just don’t have those things. You know? So I should call myself lucky that adam and i ended things when we did. So I don’t end up screaming at him in the middle of the park, wishing that I never met him.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Please apologize to abby for me about that outburst.

Chance: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: It was really awkward, but she handled it like a champ.

Chance: Well, you know what? I’m sure, running that place, she has heard worse.

Chelsea: Maybe. Well, this is me.

[ Card reader buzzes ] Oh, it was very sweet of her to let me vent like that. I’ve just had a rough day.

Chance: Yeah. No, I get it. I totally get it. I know people need to unwind every now and then. Everyone needs someone to be their messy self with. I’m very happy to be there for you, chelsea. And you know what? I’m sure abby is, too.

Chelsea: Well, thank you. It’s just hard for me to trust that I can be honest sometimes.

Chance: People — they don’t always know how you feel. You make assumptions based off how they interpret your actions. And sometimes those assumptions can sting.

Chelsea: Exactly.

Chance: So, you know, you never have to worry about my motives. You can trust me.

Chelsea: Thanks, chance. Appreciate that. And I appreciate the ride home. Although this really isn’t a home for me either. I guess that’s also why I am feeling so lost.

Chance: Well, hey, you know what I think? If you always got your kids around, you can make anyplace feel like home.

Chelsea: Well, [Chuckles] Yeah. You really are my superhero guru, after all.

[ Chuckles ]

Chance: Well…

Billy: Do you think I’m jealous of your friendship with adam?

Jack: No, I didn’t say that.

Billy: Disdain for it, yeah, absolutely. Confusion, 100%. But I resent you thinking that somehow I-I’m jealous of you hiring adam as your co-C.E.O., ‘Cause I walked away from jabot and I have not had one desire to return there, even though you keep telling me that the door is open.

Jack: I’m trying to tell you that I will always be there to support you. I’m trying to get to the source of this restlessness.

Billy: This is how you support me?

Jack: This isn’t coming from nowhere. I heard your podcast.

Billy: Oh, god.

Jack: Now, wait, you talked about feeling lost, about something missing in your life. What was that about?

Billy: Well, jack, it was something I was feeling on the day, and I expressed it. It’s not a root cause for anything.

Jack: No, it’s — it’s a symptom. Why are you feeling like that? Why — it’s this endless effort to find a safe place to land about unresolved issues?

Billy: What are you — what are you talking about? Unresolved issues with what? With you? With dad? With mom?

Jack: I don’t know. It could be any of those.

Billy: You’re reaching. Okay? You know what? Maybe it’s you with the unresolved issues. Maybe you’re questioning me in the corporate world because you’re scared I’m gonna outshine you.

Jack: I am merely reflecting your words back on you. I get the feeling that chancellor-winters is not where your heart is, where you want to be, and apparently neither are the podcasts.

Billy: What you’re doing is you’re — you’re saying that I’m just a wandering soul and I’ve got no purpose in life.

[ Sighs ] And I resent the hell out of that. And I certainly don’t need your armchair analysis about what’s missing in my life.

[ Both laugh ]

Nate: Imani. I knew devon decided to fly to virginia to see amanda, but I did not know you were coming back home.

Imani: Actually, it was amanda’s turn to come back, but she couldn’t tear herself from mom and wanted to keep an eye on things at the clinic.

Nate: So you decided to come back instead.

Imani: I thought one of us had to come here to keep the legal wheels turning, so here i am.

Nate: Well, it is really good to see you.

Imani: It’s good to be seen.

Billy: Whoa. I don’t — I’m sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, but that — that was a mistake.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Chelsea.

Chelsea: Billy.

Billy: Hey. How you doing?

Chelsea: I’m great. I’m great.

Billy: Good.

Chelsea: Yeah. Yeah, it’s a beautiful day. Just soaking up the sunshine.

Billy: Right.

Chelsea: So, um… I’m sure you’re busy, so don’t let me keep you.

Billy: Uh, no, I’m not, actually. I’m alright. And I’m actually glad that I ran into you. There’s a couple things I wanted to talk to you about.

Mariah: I still can’t believe that adoption agent refused to represent us.

Tessa: Yeah. I mean, look, I know we both have done things in the past that we regret, but that’s what it is. It’s the past.

Mariah: That’s certainly not how she saw it. She’s convinced that our arrest records make us too sketchy to be considered as adoptive parents. Not the reaction we were hoping for.

Tessa: So, what do we do now?

Nick: Okay, faith will be here shortly, and then we’ll get our college move-in road trip started. You all set?

Sharon: I think so. Finished all my errands, and, um, I packed a cooler with a bunch of drinks in it, got my phone charged so I can take a million pictures of her on campus. And I’m really excited for her. And I’m very proud.

Nick: Me too. But…

Sharon: But am I prepared to come back to a home without faith in it? I don’t know. It’s going to be strange without her around.

Nick: I know. But you know what? Noah and mariah and tessa — they’re not going anywhere. And christian will spend as much time with you as you’ll let him. We just have to do what families do and help each other out.

Sharon: I know. I have all of you guys.

Nick: Speaking of which, a couple members of my family were trying to help me earlier.

Sharon: Oh. I got your message that you were headed over to the ranch to meet your mom.

Nick: Yeah. We had a nice heart-to-heart talk. But before then, I got some advice from the last person i ever expected to offer it. Adam.

Adam: It was more of a courtesy call.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nate: I’ve been getting updates on your mom’s progress. I’m sorry to hear she’s still in a coma.

Imani: Mm.

Nate: Hopefully her condition will change sometime soon. How have you been holding up?

Imani: It’s stressful. Between all the worrying about mom, the traveling back and forth, I am so worn out. But what else can I do? I can’t let exhaustion and jet lag get to me. I’ve got way too much work piled up for that.

Mariah: I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do. We are gonna look at this situation as half full, not half empty. I’m not gonna let this lawyer get inside of our heads and ruin our dream.

Tessa: No, you’re right. Just like sharon said. I mean, we can’t just give up and lose hope.

Mariah: I am not gonna let this setback undermine our confidence. We always knew that this was not going to be easy, okay? With our criminal records, our complicated past. It’s just facing the reality of it that’s hard. But we’re not gonna give up. And we’re gonna find somebody great to represent us.

Tessa: Yeah. I mean, someone who knows us and exactly what we’re looking for.

Mariah: Right. Somebody who’s gonna answer all of our questions and maybe even help us figure out what kind of adoption we want, you know, whether that’s a birth mom, international agency, or maybe even through the foster-care system.

Tessa: You know, considering all that we just went through and what lies ahead, maybe we should change our approach.

Mariah: What do you mean?

Tessa: Well, this is gonna be a long and emotional journey, and it would be invaluable for us to have someone who cares and wants to see us succeed. Maybe someone we already know?

Mariah: Okay. I see where you’re going. Christine.

Tessa: Yeah.

Mariah: Yeah, sharon told me that back in the day, she was the one who helped her get custody of cassie.

Tessa: I mean, yeah, exactly. Look, she doesn’t specialize in adoptions, but she certainly has enough experience in family law to handle this.

Mariah: She did an amazing job with dominic’s surrogacy agreement for abby.

Tessa: And she’s a friend we can trust.

Mariah: She knows what good mothers we would be. She knows everything that i went through with dom. I don’t think we could ask for a better advocate. The question is, would christine even want to represent us?

Tessa: Well, there’s only one way to find out.

Billy: I’m actually glad that I ran into you. Um… I don’t feel great about the way things ended between us as co-hosts of the podcast. I don’t know. I mean, how do you feel since our last taping? And let’s not talk about the weather, please, because we are better friends than that.

Chelsea: We are, and I’m actually glad I ran into you because there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask.

Billy: Sure. Go ahead.

Chelsea: Have you had a chance to talk to victoria about my request — to tell johnny I’m his biological mother, he and connor are actually brothers?

Billy: I have not…yet. Look, I’m sorry, chelsea. Victoria’s been away for work, and I’m sure you can appreciate that’s not really a conversation to be had over the phone.

Chelsea: No, of course it’s not, but I don’t want too much time to pass.

Billy: I understand that. Look, victoria was not prepared to have that conversation, especially since, you know, everything she’s been going through with ashland’s death.

Chelsea: I know. She’s been through a lot lately.

Billy: She has. And I guess what I can do is — is make sure that johnny and connor spend more time together, even if it is just as cousins in this moment.

Chelsea: Okay. That’s a step. That would be wonderful. You just let me know when because my schedule’s open these days.

Billy: Well, that’s the thing. It doesn’t have to be.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Look, I think you should reconsider doing the podcast. I really do, even if it’s on your own or with a new partner.

Chelsea: Without you involved, I just don’t know what the format will be. I think it’s best if I just put all that behind me.

Billy: Do you really think that’s what’s best for you? Because I’m not sure I do. Time. It’s life’s most precious commodity,

[ Knock on door ]

Elena: Hey.

Lily: Hey.

Elena: Is now a good time?

Lily: Yes, of course. Come on in. Thank you for coming right over. I know you’re very busy.

Elena: Yeah, I had just enough time to drop by before i have to head to the hospital. But I am eager to discuss the podcast.

Lily: I know, and we officially can now that you’re a part of the chancellor-winters family.

Elena: Yes, and I have already started working on material. I want to make a really strong first impression.

Lily: What do you mean, first impression? You have a huge fan base from askmdnow. I mean, I think that your show is gonna be one of our most popular.

Elena: Well, that is a generous expectation.

Lily: Well, I mean, the numbers don’t lie. It’s just the truth. And your numbers back up everything that I’m saying. I also want you to know that i know that you have nate at home and you have devon across the hall, but I am also here if you ever want to chat. And the same with billy. I mean, he has a lot of experience with podcasts, so please feel free to reach out to him whenever you want.

Elena: Thank you.

Lily: We’re a team, you know? It doesn’t always feel that way, I’m sure, which leads me to the other reason why I wanted to speak to you privately.

Sharon: I want to hear more about this advice adam gave you.

Nick: Well, we just happened to run into each other. He asked me about ashland’s death and how I was coping with that. Wasn’t something I wanted to talk about, but I didn’t have to say much.

Sharon: Because he’s been through something similar himself?

Nick: Yeah. I mean, he gets what I’m going through, you know? The nightmares, the self-recrimination. The overwhelming guilt about taking another person’s life.

Sharon: But you know that was not your intent. Neither you nor adam wanted anything like that to happen.

Nick: Yeah. The whole situation — it just gives me more insight into my brother. I mean, I don’t feel, like, closer to him or anything, but I just — I guess I have a deeper understanding of him now, which is crazy because I thought I knew everything there was to know about him.

Sharon: Well, that’s a terrible thing to have in common. But it’s powerful to know that someone else can totally relate to what you’re going through. I hope that adam’s perspective was somehow beneficial to you.

Nick: Yeah. Um… I got the feeling he was sincere and he just wanted help. He even recommended that I go see a therapist to help me process everything.

Sharon: Interesting. Though I realize you’re not really all that comfortable with that idea.

Nick: Yeah. Sharing my thoughts and feelings with a total stranger — yeah, that’s not something I’m into at all.

Sharon: But we all need someone just to talk to sometimes, someone professional and impartial who you can confess absolutely anything to without judgment because their sole purpose is to help you.

Nick: Well, maybe I got spoiled just having you to talk to. Or maybe you’re tired of all my moaning and groaning and this is your subtle way of saying, “hey, let’s move things along.”

Sharon: Well, that’s not true and you know it. I hope that you’ll give some thought to what adam and I said. I mean, if we’re both telling you the same thing… maybe it’s worth listening to.

Adam: If you’re trying to build suspense, dad, there’s no need. I can already guess what you’re thinking.

Victor: If you’re trying to get a rise out of me, it’s not gonna happen, son.

Adam: Good. Because that’s not why I’m here. Just wanted to let you know that I took the job, and I wanted you to hear it from me first.

Victor: Mm-hmm. So, you’re gonna work alongside jack abbott…

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: …Of all people.

Adam: Jabot is a good fit for me.

Victor: Really? Is this a retaliatory move because I didn’t give you the ceo position at newman after victoria returned? I thought you were done seeking vengeance.

Adam: Look, I meant what i said, dad, okay? I’m done lashing out at you and the rest of the family. I’m doing this for me — so I can move on. And just so you know, jack only had the best of intentions when he offered me this position.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] I’m sure he did. Really.

Adam: He needs a right hand now that kyle has moved to marchetti, and he could sense that I need a new purpose. He told me that I should let go of my anger and use my energy for something productive and stop trying to tear you down.

Victor: Just remember that jack abbott tried many times to tear me down and start a war against me, and he failed every time — miserably. But, son, some things will never change, okay? Going to work with jack abbott… is a huge mistake.

Adam: And why is that?

Victor: There are many reasons, but one being that it’s a family business. You’ll always be an outsider there.

Adam: As opposed to how I’m treated by my own family at newman? Uh, I think I’ll take my chances at jabot. I don’t think it could get much worse, dad. Guess I’ll be on my way then.

Victor: Wait a minute. We’re not done yet.

Billy: Look, I know I threw you a curve ball when I decided to step away from the podcast so soon after we joined forces, but the truth is, chelsea, you don’t need me. I mean, you have a gift for holding the audience’s attention, and I just — I don’t want you to walk away from that, not only because you’re great at it — because i could tell you were very happy behind that microphone. So, I’m hoping that you reconsider. At least promise me you’ll think long and hard about it.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] I don’t know. To be honest with you, lately I’m feeling very adrift. Not where connor is involved. I mean, he’s the light of my life. He’s my safe space. But besides focusing on being the best mom I can possibly be, I don’t know what I want anymore or where I’m headed. And I hate it. I am a strong person and determined and focused. You know? I thought I’d come back to genoa city and rebuild my life, but instead — I-I don’t know how or why — everything got thrown so off track.

Billy: Is that a rhetorical question?

Chelsea: No.

Billy: Because I think the answer is very obvious.

Faith: Hey.

Sharon: There she is!

Nick: Our favorite little wolverine.

Faith: Nice, dad, but never call me that again, okay? By the way, I just heard from moses, and he and his mom are already on campus. Now I’m even more excited to get there.

Nick: Alright. Well, then let’s hit the road.

Faith: Yes, but first I need an iced tea.

Sharon: Coming up. Did you, um, talk to noah?

Faith: Yep.

Sharon: Alright. Did you get everything done on your list?

Faith: I just have one thing left I have to do here. But the good news is, all of my stuff is in the car, and I’m pretty sure I have everything.

Nick: And the bad news is?

Faith: The car is so packed, I don’t know how we’re gonna fit in it.

Nick: I’m not worried about it. Ann arbor is not that far away.

Sharon: I have a feeling it’s gonna be a quick drive there and a very long drive home.

Faith: Mom.

Sharon: I know. I promised I wasn’t gonna get emotional, not until after we dropped you off.

Faith: That’s okay. I’m kind of having a hard time believing that today is here, too. But, remember, I’m only going to be on the other side of the lake.

Nick: A really big lake. Then, like, 140 miles east of that, give or take. I mean, not that I looked that up or anything.

Faith: [ Chuckles ] You guys are…

Sharon: What? Being ridiculous?

Nick: Embarrassingly sentimental?

Faith: The best.

Lily: Now, I’m not playing politics or trying to take sides or anything like that.

[ Chuckles ] Um… I just wanted to know how you think nate has been doing lately.

Elena: Why do you ask?

Lily: Well, um, I just — I know that the conflict with devon has been really hard on him, and I’ve just been worried about him.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] Well, I mean, I haven’t been in any of the business meetings with devon, but according to nate, he feels like devon is not interested in anything he brings to the table. He thinks that devon doesn’t respect him.

Lily: Really? I mean, I’ve seen nothing but love and respect from devon, but — I don’t know. I think that they just approach business differently.

Elena: In what way?

Lily: Well, I think nate has a lot of great ideas, but he’s also very impatient, you know? And when he gets an idea in his head, he wants to just go after it. And devon’s the opposite. He’s very cautious. He’s very analytical. And it’s a constant balancing act between the two of them. And I think devon also feels that nate has overstepped a few times.

Elena: I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you, having to be in the middle of all of this.

Lily: I mean, it’s — it’s fine. I can handle it. I just, uh, wanted to get your take on the situation. I really want to help them find some harmony.

Elena: Can we talk off the record, like, just as friends?

Lily: Yeah, of course.

Elena: Okay, but keep in mind you might not like what I have to say.

Nate: Phyllis signed the agreement for chancellor-winters to acquire the grand phoenix.

Imani: Oh, that was fast. That’s good news. But enough about that stuff. I want to talk about you.

Nate: Okay.

Imani: Amanda mentioned there’s still a lot of tension between you and devon. I was hoping, in my absence, things may have improved.

Nate: No such luck. In fact, I’m afraid they may have gotten worse.

Imani: Oh, no. Nate, what happened?

Nate: Well, I, uh — I came up with an idea for a chancellor-winters music festival.

Imani: Okay.

Nate: You know, bring in a-list acts, large-venue sort of thing. I pitched it to lily at first. She was into it.

Imani: Oh, god, of course she was. That’s a great idea. I love it. And look at you, hmm? Putting something major on the table like we discussed. I’m really proud of you.

Nate: Thank you.

Imani: Mm-hmm.

Nate: Too bad devon isn’T. He immediately put the kibosh on it, said he might consider it in a year, maybe.

Imani: [ Laughs ] Are you serious?

Nate: That attitude is symbolic of how things have been between us these days. I present something. Even if lilly backs me up, he shut it down. If it comes from me, the answer’s no.

Imani: I’m sorry to hear that.

Nate: Devon and I have been keeping things polite, trying to co-exist at the office as much as possible.

Imani: Mm. Which means you’re constantly swallowing your frustration. How’s that working for you? Really?

Nate: To be honest, I’m tired of biting my tongue. And poor elena — she’s definitely getting an earful.

Imani: Mm. How does she feel about all of this?

Nate: Her advice was for me to make a clean break now and quit before my relationship with devon takes an irreparable hit.

Victor: There’s nothing I can say or do to convince you to come back to newman enterprises?

Adam: There is nothing that you can say or do to get me to change my mind. My deal with jabot is already done. And, dad, quite frankly, you can just save yourself a lot of frustration if you just admit my leaving is what’s best for both of us.

Victor: I think you’re so wrong about that.

Adam: This is — this is about so much more than just a position in a company. I mean, when are we gonna stop this conflict?

Victor: You are my son!

Adam: All we do is butt heads, over and over again!

Victor: I want you to be part of my life!

Adam: Yes, you want me in your life, but you don’t want me to run your company.

Victor: Why do you always go there? Why do you always go there? I treat you no differently than I have treated victoria, nicholas, or abby. I’ve had differences with them, enormous issues with them. They’ve become estranged, but they’ve always come back. They have never felt not part of the family. Why the hell are you different? Why is it all or nothing for you?

Adam: I am just cut from a different cloth. And I’ve accepted that. I think it’s long overdue that you’ve accepted that, too, dad.

Elena: Okay, here’s the thing. After hearing nate vent again about how upset he is, I suggested he leave chancellor-winters.

Lily: You didn’T.

Elena: I did. I mean, he’s been so unhappy and bothered by this situation with devon. And he’s continually hurt and disappointed.

Lily: I really hate to hear that.

Elena: Yeah, and he can’t help it. And it hurts me to see him going through it. And I feel like if it’s making him that miserable, then what’s the point?

Lily: Yeah. Um… I know that you’re trying to protect him. Um, how did he respond?

Elena: Well, he flat out refused to leave. He said he made a commitment to his family and he wasn’t gonna back out now.

Lily: Okay. Good. Good. I’m glad. Look, elena, I want you to know how much I believe in him. You know, he has such strong ideas, and he really belongs here with us.

Elena: You should definitely tell him that because I think my suggestion just fueled the fire. But, honestly, if you’re looking for a peaceful coexistence, i think it might be a distant hope.

Imani: So, excuse me for being presumptuous, but I was operating under the impression that things were all good at chancellor-winters. I mean, what would you do if you left?

Nate: Elena thought that maybe I miss medicine, that i would go back to the hospital. Technically, I’m still a physician.

Imani: Mm, okay. Well, I’m sure there are other opportunities you could take advantage of at memorial. I mean, since your old chief of surgery position has been filled.

Nate: Mm.

Imani: But the question is, would that satisfy you?

Nate: [ Chuckles ]

Imani: Is that what you really want?

Nate: Not in the least. Elena just was trying to look out for me. She knows how frustrated I’ve been, and she worries about my happiness. But that life — no longer for me.

Imani: I’m relieved to hear you say that. I think you are exactly where you need to be. No, the one with the problem, the guy with a chip on his shoulder is devon. The way I see it, you have only one real option, and that is not to resign. This is about proving your worth in a way that he cannot ignore. At.

Billy: It’s okay. It can wait.

Lily: Billy, hey. It’s me. I’m in the office, so come see me when you’re free. Bye.

Chelsea: I appreciate your concern, but I don’t feel like going down an adam rabbit hole with you right now.

Billy: Okay. I will drop it. I will not mention his name. But I do want to make sure that you understand that your past or your present with mr. No name should not shake the belief that you have in yourself. We all lose our mojo every now and again, but you’ll get it back.

Chelsea: I hope so. And I hope you do, too.

Billy: What do you mean by that? I feel like I’m doing okay.

Chelsea: Okay.

Billy: Pretty fine.

Chelsea: Great. If that’s the case, then I’m happy for you. You know, I’m just still surprised that you abandoned your podcast to focus on chancellor-winters. You loved being creative. You loved reaching your audience.

Billy: You’re right. I did.

Chelsea: But you ditched all that to focus on corporate america.

Billy: It was the change i felt like I needed to make.

Chelsea: And I guess I’m just still wondering why. A suit — you know, it’s not you. It’s not who you are. And you were the first person to admit that to me.

Billy: There’s no one reason. There really isn’T. But the truth is, I made a commitment to lily to be the best coo I could possibly be — and not only for her, but for my mother, as well. And, you know, I like a challenge, and maybe I am trying to prove it to myself. I guess I feel most alive when I’m swimming upstream.

Chelsea: You were most alive when you were doing our podcast.

Billy: Well, then maybe I’m one of those guys that never feels settled, and I got a long, colorful résumé to prove that.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Billy: But that’s something i need to work on. So, this is me working on it.

Chelsea: Huh. I think I’m like you. I just can’t be content with what I have and where I am.

Billy: Keep looking. I’m very confident you’re gonna find the place that you belong. Ladies, six minutes please…

Mariah: Oh, good. We didn’t miss you.

Tessa: Sorry we didn’t get here sooner.

Sharon: Is everything okay?

Mariah: Oh, yeah, everything’s fine. We’ll gladly talk about ourselves later, but right now we are here for faith.

Faith: Saying goodbye to you two was the last thing on my list.

Mariah: Whoa, whoa, whoa. No, no, no, no. This is not goodbye, okay? This is just, “see you later, college girl.”

Tessa: Are we really doing this? We’re sending faith off into a new frontier without any of us to look out for her?

Faith: Look out for me?

Mariah: See? Don’t worry. She’s gonna be fine. She’s gonna rock it.

Nick: Couldn’t agree more. Our girl is ready for this. Even if the rest of us aren’T.

Victor: I, of all people, get that you want to be your own man. But you’re still a newman, just like your brother and your sisters.

Adam: I have tried so hard for so long to seek your approval, dad, and all I wanted was to be my father’s son.

Victor: Adam, let’s be honest for a moment. I’ve protected you from the day you came back to genoa city. Although it was often not appreciated.

Adam: Or wasn’t asked for.

Victor: Do I have to ask for it? You’re my family, for heaven’s sake.

Adam: It’s time for me to follow in my mother’s footsteps.

Victor: What the hell does that mean?

Adam: Look, I know that I’ve never been and I never will be the good soul that my mother was, but I’m talking about her choice to end her relationship with you and not fall into all the trappings of being a newman — or traps, I should say. She wanted something happier and healthier for me. That’s why she raised me as a wilson.

Victor: That was her choice, not mine.

Adam: And — and I resented the fact that she waited until her last breath to tell me that you were my father. But now I understand why she did that.

Victor: Do you know how often I wanted to interfere and go there and say, “this is my son, he comes with me to genoa city”? Do you know how often I wanted to do that? I respected her wishes. That’s why I didn’t! I wish I had!

Adam: Listen, we —

Victor: None of this would be a problem right now!

Adam: We don’t have to go down this path again!

Victor: Yes, we do! You need to understand that you have never been disadvantaged!

Adam: I’m talking about my mother’s choice to walk away, and now I’m making my choice. And I’m sorry that you can’t understand that or you can even be happy about my new venture. Guess that’s a little too much for you.

Victor: Then you follow your new venture, alright?!

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Hey there.

Lily: Hey.

Billy: Sorry I missed your call, but I got your message. Is, uh, everything okay?

Lily: Yeah, yeah. Hey.

Billy: Hi.

Lily: Um, I just wanted to tell you the details of the grand phoenix acquisition and let you know about my conversation with elena.

Billy: Oh. How did that go?

Lily: Well, I think I’m facing more of an uphill battle than I realized with devon and nate. But I’m determined to do whatever I can to unite them.

Billy: That’s the spirit. Well, if anybody can do it, it’s gonna be you. And you have my full support.

Lily: Aww. Have I told you how much I love when you have my back?

Billy: You just did.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] So, where were you?

Billy: Well, I had that out-of-office meeting and then i was walking back and I ran into chelsea. We got to talking, and, uh, that’s why I was delayed.

Lily: Oh. Chelsea.

Billy: “Oh,” as in that’s not a big deal, or “oh,” as in you’re not happy that I spend any time with her? Facing expensive vitamin c creams with dull results?

Mariah: Well, we got you just a little something for your new campus digs, but don’t open it now, okay? Just open it when you get there.

Tessa: That’s code for, if you open it now, mariah will start crying and then I will cry.

Faith: And that will set the rest of us off, so I will wait. But thank you. I know I’ll love it, whatever it is.

Nick: Alright, guys. Sorry. We really should go.

Faith: I love you both so much.

Mariah: Not as much as we love you.

Tessa: We’re gonna miss you. But this is not goodbye because we’re gonna be calling and texting and we’re gonna be video-chatting.

Tessa: Yeah, you’re gonna be so sick of hearing from us, you’re gonna have to change your number.

Faith: Not possible.

Sharon: Okay, uh…it’s time.

Faith: Bye.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Nate: What’s going on in that head of yours? I can practically see the wheels spinning. Go on. Spit it out.

Imani: When you went off script with your speech at the launch party, you proved to everyone that your instincts are right on the money. You generated buzz and excitement that would benefit the company. You went with your gut. And that is exactly what you need to do now, but on a much bigger scale.

Nate: How much bigger?

Imani: I’m thinking, with devon out of town, you need to make a major move that he cannot ignore. Show everyone your ideas spell success.

Nate: I don’t know about that.

Imani: Trust me. You need to make sure that devon knows exactly who you are and what you bring to the table.

Lily: Oh, I am fully aware that we will run into chelsea on a semi-regular basis. I just really hope there was no uncomfortable “miscommunication” between you two this time. Was there?

Billy: There is nothing to worry about.

Lily: Okay.

Billy: Okay? I think she’s a little embarrassed that she took our camaraderie for something more than friendship.

Lily: Mm. Okay. I’m glad there’s nothing more to worry about.

Billy: There isn’T. Honestly. Look, that only happened because I think that chelsea was having a bad day, you know? She’s feeling a little bit lost, and I’m feeling a little bit guilty that I left her high and dry when I walked away from the podcast.

Lily: Does that mean that you’re reconsidering your decision?

Billy: No, no, no, no. Absolutely not. I am here with you, and that’s exactly where I want to be.

Kyle: Well, it would be more than just a party, though. First summer and I would renew our vows since a lot of the folks around here weren’t able to make it to milan for our wedding.

Traci: Oh, my gosh, I can’t think of a better thing to celebrate. And it is super romantic.

Kyle: Hopefully summer will think so, too.

Traci: Oh, she will, kyle. She will. So, I gather that all this whispering is maybe that you’re trying to keep this a secret from your bride?

Kyle: You gather correctly.

Summer: I’ll just be a minute.

Kyle: Uh, you know, no one’s a bigger blackhawks fan than me, but, realistically, I wouldn’t look for any more stanley cups for a while.

Traci: What a disappointment. So, who do you think in the nba would be a contender?

Kyle: Uh [Chuckling] Nhl. Nba is basketball.

Traci: Right. I knew that. I knew that.

[ Both laugh ]

Summer: Nice try, you two.

Kyle: Hey, babe. Um, what’s harrison up to?

Summer: He’s working hard on his dinosaur puzzle, just like you’re down here working even harder on trying to keep something from me.

Kyle: I, uh — what do you mean?

Summer: You and your mom had your heads together earlier, and now you’re down here talking about hockey with aunt traci? And we both know she has zero interest in sports.

Traci: Oh, come on. I would not exactly say zero.

Summer: [ Chuckles ] Stop tormenting your aunt — and me. I want to know what’s going on.

Adam: Thank you.

Nick: Playing hooky from the new job? Or has the whole experiment ended already?

Adam: Believe it or not, i just had lunch with the senior vp of jabot’s global supply chain. He was giving me the lay of the land.

Nick: Hey, good for you. Sounds like you’re diving right in.

Adam: Listen, I’m actually glad I ran into you. You know, you’ve been on my mind. How are you doing?

Nick: I’m fine.

Adam: I wasn’t asking to be polite, nick. I mean, how are you dealing with the situation?

Nikki: I don’t know if i mentioned this on the phone, but my favorite part of the article is right under your headline — “first of a series.”

Phyllis: Amen. Amen. Diane is not gonna know what hit her.

Talia: I take it you’re pleased with what I included, as well as the overall tone?

Nikki: Oh, the whole piece is perfect.

Phyllis: I love how you brought it together. All of diane’s lies and methods of subterfuge that led up to her faking her own death.

Nikki: You really are such a gifted writer.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm.

Talia: Well, thank you. I’m sorry it was necessary to include such painful history.

Phyllis: Oh, that’s okay. I mean, it’s just gonna wake everybody up to who diane really is.

Talia: Well, this initial installment didn’t really contain any new information.

Nikki: Not if you’re a newman or an abbott, but for the rest of the world, it will be very eye-opening.

Phyllis: Diane will be under the public’s microscope. I mean, we know that, right? It’s brutal.

Nikki: Yeah, we do.

Phyllis: But, see, nikki and I — we’re strong women. Diane will crumble. Diane cares about how people feel about her. I mean, she won’t be able to deal with the judgment and the public scrutiny, and she will go home with her tail between her legs and be gone forever.

Nikki: So, what kind of response have you gotten so far?

Talia: The response has been phenomenal. Clicks, comment, shares, all off the charts. People want more. They’re calling in with tips.

Nikki: Really? In los angeles?

Talia: Among other places. I mean, of course, 99% of those will turn out to be false leads.

Phyllis: Okay, but you’ll follow up on those, right?

Talia: Oh, you bet. You never know what’ll take you to your next big revelation.

[ Cellphone pings ] I’m sorry. I need to stay on top of these.

Nikki: Oh, no, it’s fine.

Talia: It’s from my managing editor.

Phyllis: Oh. More good news, right?

Talia: I don’t understand this at all. He’s canceled the entire series. He’s ordered me to drop the investigation. My magazine’s not publishing any more stories about diane.

Chance: Well, louise is gonna have one hell of a lunch today. She’s going to wonder why you sent her to the zoo with wine.

Abby: Not just wine.

Vintage wine. Ugh, this is what happens when you have two identical picnic baskets.

Chance: Well, you know what? It is my lucky day because i have been craving apple slices and little fish crackers all day. So I hope you brought enough for both of us. I’m about chow down.

Abby: [ Laughs ]

Nick: Look, ashland’s dead and buried, if that’s the situation you’re talking about. So I’m not thinking about it, if that answers your question.

Adam: You having trouble sleeping? Intrusive thoughts? Maybe some memories that come back when you least expect them?

Nick: [ Scoffs ] I’m gonna get through it. I know it’s not gonna happen overnight.

Adam: You know, nick, you might be able to speed up this process if you were willing to talk to someone.

Nick: You mean like a therapist?

Kyle: Sorry if I got carried away talking about something that bores you.

Traci: No. Why do the two of you think that I hate sports?

Summer: Maybe because you haven’t mentioned them even once since we were kids?

Traci: Well, there’s that.

[ Laughter ]

Summer: Look, if you guys were talking about the article before I came down, you don’t have to hide it from me. I’ve seen it.

Kyle: What article?

Summer: Seriously? Oh, boy.

Traci: Um, you know what? This is something that I think the two of you should talk about alone, so I’m gonna get back to work. Excuse me.

Summer: Okay, you remember that reporter, talia morgan? She was writing that article about ashland? Well, it’s come out, and it turns out it’s not about him at all.

Kyle: Then who?

[ Sighs ] “The long and winding road of diane jenkins. Back from the dead.”

Summer: The last thing you needed, right?

Kyle: Never mind me. My mother must be mortified.

Jack: Something wrong?

Diane: [ Exhales sharply ] Talia morgan, the so-called investigative reporter — she posted a story about me that was so completely and utterly toxic —

Jack: I saw it.

Diane: Oh, god.

Jack: You can’t be that surprised. No reporter is going to turn their back on a story that’s as juicy as this one.

Diane: Yeah, but it’s only half the story, the dark half, the old, outdated half. Jack, I’ve transformed my entire life. I have proven that redemption is possible. But is any of that in this story? No. No. It’s just a rehash of all the unkind things I did before i left town.

Jack: “Unkind.” Well, there is some artful P.R. Clearly, you’ve learned a lot from your new job.

Diane: Jack.

Jack: Your actions were brazenly cruel, diane. And for those who suffered from your behavior, no possible spin is going to alter that.

Diane: I am well aware. But what good does it do to shine a spotlight on it now? I have been willing to be held accountable. It’s why I came back. But that’s not why the story was written. It was written to publicly humiliate me, to provoke me, to punish me. And you know who’s behind it.

Jack: I assume you mean phyllis.

Diane: Yeah.

Jack: Or nikki.

Diane: Yeah. They’re never going to ease up or give me a chance. How is that fair? How is that right?

Jack: You keep framing yourself as the victim here. When you came back to town, you knew people were going to be livid. You claimed you were ready to face that.

Diane: I was. I have. I’ve done what I could to make amends. But this article isn’t going to help anyone heal. It’s not going to do anything worthwhile. The only thing it’s going to do is to hurt me personally… color every interaction I have with a co-worker, and embarrass kyle and summer when they’re making a name for themselves with marchetti.

Jack: I assume that’s your main concern — that kyle will want to distance himself from bad publicity and from you?

Diane: It could undermine all the progress that I’ve made so far with him.

Jack: Then you should be very thoughtful and deliberate in your response to this. You said yourself this is old news. For the people you care about, this isn’t new. They’ve seen this.

Diane: Yeah, except for all of my new co-workers who are only gonna think the worst of me.

Jack: They all know that the son you left behind has welcomed you back into his life. You’re on the right track, diane. Don’t let this derail you.

Diane: Thanks for the encouragement…and the advice. As always.

[ Door opens ]

[ Sighs ]

Nick: Adam, I get that you have some insight into what happened because of what you experienced when you were a kid. The difference is I’m not a kid. I’m not blocking the memories.

[ Sighs ] Though sometimes I got to wonder if that’d be better.

Adam: Nick, I think that is the last thing that you should be envying. Hey, if I had been allowed to face up to my actions, if i actually could have got the right kind of help, my life could have been completely different. Listen, I know you’re not asking for my advice, but here it is. Get sharon to recommend someone that you can process this with.

Nick: Not ready.

Adam: Yeah. Look, when all my buried memories came flooding back, I was reluctant, too. But then I realized it was something that I had to do. And I did the work, and… it worked for me.

Nick: Good to know. I just don’t feel like rehashing what happened with some stranger.

Adam: Just know the longer you put this off, the more your inner demons are gonna take hold. It’s like I said, nick — god forbid you wind up like me.

[ Knock on door ]

Chloe: Hey there. I need you to sign off on these three new hires in I.T.

Sally: [ Exhales heavily ] It’s ironic, isn’t it? For these things, these small, inconsequential matters, you clear it with me first, but not so much when you are meddling in my personal life, like going to my ex and [Chuckles] Practically pleading with him to break my heart all over again.

Chloe: I think you know that I did that for your own good. And of course adam would spin it to his own advantage.

Sally: At least he was being honest.

Chloe: I have been very clear about where I stand. And I see that he is reeling you in again. You even admitted to me that you were struggling. So, yes, I went to adam thinking that maybe there was a sliver of a chance that he would do the right thing, and instead he decides to drive a wedge between you and me.

Sally: No, you are the one that is doing that, chloe — between adam and me.

Chloe: Because he is a snake! So, yes, the bigger the wedge, the better.

[ Scoffs ] What did he ask for? And don’t tell me nothing because when it comes to adam newman, there is always something. So, what is it?

Sally: Forgiveness.

Phyllis: Hey, read any good articles recently?

Diane: [ Sighs ] Phyllis, you keep telling everyone that I’m going to revert to my old ways, but you’re the one who hasn’t grown or changed at all. I mean, you published that exposé about me in

restless style all those years ago, and now you’ve convinced talia morgan to drag my name through the mud all over again?

Phyllis: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, I didn’t do that. That was just a suggestion. Talia went with it. And it wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t sucking up to her at the restaurant. She thought what I said was interesting, and she wrote about it. That’s all.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Oh, wow. This has really gotten under your skin, hasn’t it?

Diane: Phyllis, you can try and push my buttons all you want, but it won’t work because, unlike you, I have grown. I’ve made peace with my past. I’ve transformed my life. And nothing is going to throw me off my game. So, whatever explosion you’re trying to trigger, you have wasted your time. I’m sorry. Sorry to disappoint you.

Phyllis: I don’t obsess about you like you think I do, diane.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: I don’T. And, quite honestly, I’m glad that this article came out because now the entire world knows what a vile, conniving excuse for a human being you actually are and always have been. Talia’s done a public service, I think. She should win an award.

Diane: Ugh!

[ Breathes deeply ]

Chance: And there it is. That is the last cracker that we have. And you know what? I saved it just for you.

Abby: Wow. That is true love. And very thoughtful. But, no, it is all yours.

Chance: Oh.

Abby: [ Laughs ] You are so cute.

Chance: [ Chuckles ] I’m glad you think so.

Abby: What was that for?

Chance: Mm, just for always looking out for us the way you do.

Abby: Thank you for noticing.

Chance: Oh, trust me. I know how extremely blessed i am to have you as a wife.

Abby: I’ve just been kind of worried ’cause, you know, with the investigation, things have been kind of, um, tense between us.

Chance: We’re good. I promise. We are beyond good. I know that whole choice was weighing on me, but I’m gonna move past it. It’s not gonna be an issue. And I just love you so damn much.

Abby: [ Laughs ] Mm.

Chloe: Forgiveness?

[ Scoffs ] Good god, adam has some nerve.

Sally: Okay, don’t make me regret that I confided in you. I need a friend right now. A real friend, one who’s willing to set aside her prejudices, because I am so confused.

Chloe: I know you are. And adam is a master at keeping people off balance to get what he wants.

Sally: You make him sound so evil, like he’s calculating every move. But I don’t see that when I look in his eyes. Whenever I talk to him, he just seems lost.

Chloe: Look, I know that adam had a rough childhood, but he’s damaged goods. He doesn’t know how to be a normal person in a healthy relationship because he’s never had a good example. And you love a challenge, so it’s a very dangerous combination. Even chelsea thought that she would be able to fix him, and look how that ended up.

Sally: Okay, I am not chelsea. I wish you would stop comparing me to her. And if you’re not, remember what happened when you kept badgering her. You couldn’t function together anymore. You had to end your partnership.

Chloe: Chelsea and I are still friends — because she knows that everything I say comes from a place of love and support. I really wish you could get that through your head, sally. I am your friend. Adam is not.

Kyle: Saw the article. I assume that’s why you’re exasperated.

Diane: Oh, it’s — it’s fine. It’s — it’s no big deal. Okay, I admit it’s — it’s a big deal. I have worked so hard to put the person I used to be behind me.

Kyle: I know you have.

Diane: Kyle, you’ve spent time with me. You see how I connect with you and harrison and summer and — and even jack. That’s who I am now. I’m not — [ Scoffs ] I’m not trying to manipulate anyone or capitalize on this situation. None of those fears of yours have come to pass. But now, whenever anybody sees me, they’re just going to think of the old diane.

Kyle: Not everyone.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

Kyle: I can distinguish between the woman in that article and the mother you are today.

Diane: Thank you. That’s exactly what I need to hear right now.

Kyle: I’m glad I could help. Hey, whatever the fallout may be, just know you always have my support.

Nikki: So, where is my grandson? I thought you were gonna bring him by.

Nick: Yeah, I will. Faith’s making the rounds, saying goodbye to all her friends. I don’t think we’re gonna be leaving for michigan for a little while.

Nikki: Yeah, that sounds about right.

Nick: Thanks for letting christian hang out with you. I have a feeling once sharon and I drop off faith at her dorm, the ride home is just gonna be a bunch of crying, and christian doesn’t need to be around that.

Nikki: Well, that’s true. So, did you just pop over to say hello?

Nick: Uh, no. I was, um…hoping we could talk if, uh — if you have some time.

Nikki: Oh, darling, I always have time for you. I think I know what this is about. You sit down. I’m gonna make us some tea, and then we’ll talk. Everything will be alright.

Kyle: Got a sec?

Phyllis: Oh, yeah. What — what’s going on?

Kyle: I’m planning a surprise for summer. I want us to renew our vows and then have a party to celebrate our marriage. I was planning on inviting everyone in town who couldn’t make it to italy, plus the people who could. I was hoping you’d want to be involved.

Phyllis: Well, that sounds lovely. It really does. Um… sounds like the party of the century, actually. Count me in.

Kyle: Excellent.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Kyle: Uh, there is one caveat. I’ve invited my mother to be part of it.

Phyllis: Yes. Yes. Um… well, okay. I mean, you don’t want us to work together on planning it?

Kyle: God, no. I will keep your interactions to a minimum.

Phyllis: Thank you. I appreciate that.

Kyle: And I hope you understand that I understand how stressful it’s been to have her back in town, given what she subjected you to in the past. I don’t blame you for being worried and protective of your daughter.

Phyllis: Well, that is just lovely. It really is. I appreciate that. Thank you. Thanks for saying that.

Kyle: Mm-hmm.

Phyllis: But, um, I want you to know that I’ve been working through it, and I think I have it all under control.

Kyle: Good to know.

Phyllis: Yeah. Uh, did you get that memo that i sent out about the textile designers?

Jack: I saw it and was very impressed.

Nikki: You were probably hoping that the feelings you had about what happened between you and ashland would be less intense by now.

Nick: They still are, though, mom. I’m just wondering if that’s ever gonna change.

Nikki: Well, I can only speak from my own experience.

Nick: Well, yeah. That’s why I’m here. I really want your perspective.

[ Mug thuds ]

Nikki: When there’s been a death and things are in crisis and you’re facing a major threat, you tend to focus on the emergency at hand rather than your own feelings. And then when things get a little calmer, it seems like everybody else is going back to their lives, just as if nothing had happened, and you wish you could do the same. But you can’T. You’re consumed with guilt. It demands your attention. It will eat away at you.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] That’s a pretty fair description of what’s going on with me.

Nikki: Let me ask you this. What would it mean to you emotionally to let that burden go?

Nick: You know, I’D… be able to breathe again, just relax, live my life, focus on my new job, anything.

Nikki: What’s holding you back? I mean, why can’t you give yourself permission to let it all go?

Nick: I think I see what you’re getting at. If I didn’t feel guilty, then I’d feel guilty about that.

[ Sighs ] So, I guess there’s a part of me that’s clinging to that experience, you know, making me relive it over and over again… as a sort of penance.

Adam: Sally.

Sally: Hi.

Adam: Hi. Am I interrupting?

Sally: It’s fine. I, um… I just had to get out of the office for a bit.

Adam: Beautiful day for it. Look, I don’t — I don’t want to put any pressure on you. And that’s why I haven’t called or sent flowers or made any other grand romantic gesture. I mean, if I misread and that’s what you want —

Sally: No, I… that won’t be necessary.

Adam: I just hope that you have been thinking about what i said last time we saw each other.

Sally: Of course I have been thinking about it. I can’t stop.

Nick: I haven’t told anyone this, but I’ve got another reason to feel guilty on top of everything else.

Nikki: What?

Nick: It occurred to me on some level that I judged adam pretty harshly when I learned that he accidentally killed that man when he was a kid.

Nikki: Well, that man was threatening his mother.

Nick: I just thought it confirmed exactly who I thought he was, you know, that he was a bad seed. When I was faced with a similar situation — somebody I loved was in trouble — I reacted the same way, got the same result. And it wasn’t just the death of a man, you know? Dad tried to cover it up.

Nikki: Striking similarities.

Nick: And now I’m going through my own personal disaster here. And who has gone out of his way to be supportive? Adam.

Nikki: Really?

Nick: Yeah.

I just wish it didn’t take something like this for me to be more understanding about what he endured or how it affected him. I mean, you said earlier, you know, carrying that burden around. Adam has done that his entire life, mom, whether he’s consciously aware of it or not. It’s no wonder he is who he is.

Nikki: It certainly would explain why he hasn’t been able to get close to anybody for any length of time.

Nick: Deep down, he knows what he’s capable of. How can he risk it?

Sally: You have been a huge distraction for me, when i should be focused on my job — you know, the one you went through so much trouble to make sure that I kept. But instead, I just keep replaying everything that you put me through. And, frankly, you did an excellent job of stomping on my heart and making me feel like a fool, which I am not.

Adam: Believe me, sally, I — I do know that.

Sally: And I — I don’t even know what forgiveness would look like. I mean, what is that? Is that we get better at small talk or we become running buddies again or we just go grab a coffee at crimson lights and talk about how rough our days were at the office?

Adam: Well, you can define it however you’d like.

Sally: Sure. Until the next time you make a unilateral move that upends my whole world.

[ Voice breaking ] I cannot talk about this right now.

Chance: Mmm. [ Smooches ] Thank you again for a fantastic day.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Things have been so crazy. It feels so nice to get back to a normal life.

Chance: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. Normal life. Right, right. Living in this big old mansion, sleeping on these 1,000-thread-count italian sheets.

Abby: Okay, okay. You know what I mean.

Chance: No, I don’t know what you mean. Go ahead. Tell me. What’s this normal life look like to you?

Abby: More days like today. Totally focused on each other.

Phyllis: Well, I am so happy you like my ideas.

Kyle: Well, I did, too, for the record.

Phyllis: That’s great, both of you. Hey, listen, I am having such fun in this position. I love it. I’m having so much fun here. You know, I should be paying you. I’m absolutely not gonna do that, but I should be.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] Good. Well, I’m glad we spoke. I’ll catch you later.

Phyllis: Okay, great. Hey, did he tell you about his romantic idea about surprising summer and renewing vows?

Jack: He did, and I am very much looking forward to it.

Phyllis: It is really lovely. I am so glad our kids are doing well.

Jack: Agreed. Listen, there’s something I have to ask you. Um, how much did you have to do with the piece talia morgan wrote on diane?

Phyllis: I had nothing to do with it. That was all talia.

[ Pen clatters ]

[ Scoffs ]

Chance: I’m still curious.

Abby: About?

Chance: About this whole normal life, how you picture it. I noticed you didn’t say anything about our jobs.

Abby: Well, in an ideal world, we would both keep our jobs. I would cut back on my hours, and you would pass on the riskier cases.

Chance: This isn’t the first time you’ve thought about this.

Abby: When you came home from spain, it was a painful time in a lot of ways. But we got to spend so much time together, and I will always cherish that. I just… I worry about you when you’re at work. You’re just so conscientious and dedicated. And it’s the stress that it puts on you. I mean, sometimes you bring that tension home with you without meaning to.

Chance: Do you feel like I’m neglecting you?

Abby: No, no, not at all. I just think the more we prioritize our family, the happier we’ll be.

Kyle: My colleague spoke very highly of you. She said you did a great job organizing her parents’ 50th anniversary party. I had originally thought I would do all the planning myself. The problem is, my wife and i spend a lot of time in the same vicinity. We work in the same place. We obviously live together. And every time I try to talk to somebody about what’s on my mind, I, um —

[ Footsteps approaching ] Hey, babe, um… didn’t know you were home.

[ Stammers ] I’m gonna have to call you back.

[ Phone thuds ] How much of that did you hear?

Summer: Enough to know that you are definitely up to something.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ]

Summer: Spill.

Kyle: Huh. Okay. Okay. I’m planning a surprise. That’s all I’m gonna say.

That’s what you were talking to diane about earlier? And traci? Who else knows about it?

Kyle: Mnh, sorry, you’re not getting anything out of me.

Summer: Oh, come on. Just a hint?

Kyle: Mnh-mnh.

[ Both laughing ]

[ Elevator doors open ]

Phyllis: Oh, great! Jack, can I just have a minute of your time? Oh, I want to run something by you. I have a pretty great idea. It’s actually a killer idea. What if marchetti home took the abbott living room and redecorated it? Or the pool house. Whatever you want. But it really would be so explosive out in social media.

Jack: Let me see if I get this straight. You want to redesign a home you know I happen to love just the way it is?

Phyllis: Some of those chairs are from the paleolithic era.

Jack: They’re classics. They’re antiques.

Phyllis: They’re old. How about this? What if I don’t touch the walls and we just touch the sofas and accessories?

Jack: And then when the photo shoot is over, everything goes back to the designer, and we bring things back to the way they were.

Phyllis: Sure. Yeah. We’ll do that. Hey, were you always this unwavering about changing things?

Jack: Since I was this tall.

Phyllis: Oh, god it’s coming back to me.

Jack: [ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Yes, it’s coming back to me. Okay.

Jack: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Adam: What’s going on here? Okay, what kind of covert operation did I walk in on?

Faith: Big news, adam. Your kidney’s going to college today.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Nikki: Can you believe our granddaughter is already heading off to college?

Victor: I’m so impressed with her. And what a beautiful girl, you know? She is — she is really something. I think she will be very successful.

Nikki: I assume you’ll be continuing your chess games long distance?

Victor: Ooh, I already have made the first move via an app.

Nikki: Yes, of course you have.

Victor: Yeah. By the way, talking about moves, someone told me they saw you in town talking to a journalist from california. Talia morgan?

Nikki: [ Sighs ] Does anything happen in this town that you don’t hear about?

Victor: Sweetheart, have you ever known anything to slip by me?

Nikki: Well, truth be told, talia initially came to town to write about the impact of ashland’s death on our family.

Victor: Hmm. Sorry to hear that.

Nikki: But with a little help from me, she quickly realized that the more compelling story is diane’s return from the dead. And I was more than happy to provide as much dirt as possible for what I hope will be a beautiful hatchet job.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] I bet you were.

Phyllis: I cannot believe how much fun I’m having working with you.

Summer: It has been pretty great. I am so excited for your ideas for marchetti’s new home line.

Phyllis: Mm, so am I.

Summer: You know, there’s just one thing that’s still kind of distracting me. It’s — it’s that article that talia morgan was writing about ashland.

Phyllis: Um, you — right. What about it?

Summer: Well, I’ve been on the lookout for it, you know, in case it takes a negative spin or twists any of the facts. I want to stay on top of anything that could be detrimental to harrison in the future.

Phyllis: Oh, of course. Of course. I mean, talia — she’s an investigative journalist. I mean, she only writes about the truth. She’s not gonna do anything to an innocent little boy.

Summer: You’re probably right, but… I don’t know. I’m still just curious. Like, what else is there to say about the guy? Just feels like old news by now, right? And the article hasn’t even come out yet. Not that I’ve seen, at least. I mean, where is it?

Phyllis: She’s probably trying to, you know, get other sources, um, confirm the information she has garnered. Wait a second. You still don’t trust me, do you?

Jack: These marchetti projections look very strong. You’re doing a great job, son, setting the company up for future success.

Kyle: As much as I’d like to take the credit, summer is the driving force. I take my lead from her creative decisions. She makes it easy.

Jack: Always good to have someone you can count on. Which reminds me, I need to tell you something and I’m not sure you’re gonna be happy to hear it. Pain hits fast.

Nikki: Well, I’m hoping that the sheer humiliation of seeing her crimes in print will be enough to drive her out of town, this time for good.

Summer: I’m sorry. I can’t deny it. I am a little bit suspicious. I can’t help it, mom. It just seems like there’s something off with this whole thing.

Phyllis: What?! Why? I’m on my best behavior with diane.

Summer: I know, and to be honest, the longer that goes on, the more worried I get. It doesn’t even seem like it’s hard for you to stay calm, which leads me to suspect that there’s something else going on underneath your polite veneer.

Phyllis: Summer, I’m doing what you wanted me to do. I’m being nice to the woman. I mean, I don’t have to go and hang out with her at happy hour. I’m just biting my tongue. It’s hard, after everything that she’s done to me, but I’m doing it for you, okay? I’m just putting on the fake smile. See? It’s, like, a piece of cake.

Summer: Mom, I’ve seen your fake smile, and this is not it. I just — you know what? Never mind. Kyle and I made a pact that we would stop babysitting our mothers and just trust you two to not destroy each other.

Phyllis: That’s a good idea. Stick to that.

Summer: Don’t get me wrong, mom. I’m the one that convinced jack to invest in marchetti, and I’m going to do everything in my power to protect its integrity.

Jack: When I implied i wouldn’t be replacing you as co-ceo, I was letting you off the hook.

Kyle: Why would you do that?

Jack: Because I didn’t want to make you feel guilty about leaving jabot because I thought this move to marchetti was a great move for you.

Kyle: Yeah, well, i appreciate you making the transition easy for me, and this opportunity to work with summer is really a great fit. And I guess I’m okay with you filling the position as long as adam’s not my replacement. No. No, dad, don’t say it.

Jack: Adam changed his mind. Look, I honestly believe he is going to be a great addition to the jabot family. Besides, it will give grandpa jack more time with harrison.

Kyle: Hey, hey, I’m all for more grandpa time, but giving adam any power here — that’s a recipe for disaster.

Jack: I understand your reservations. Adam is looking for a fresh start, and I honestly think he’s put his worst behind him.

Kyle: Yeah, I still find that extremely hard to believe. But I’ve walked away from the co-ceo position, so it’s your decision. Still, I’m keeping my eye on him.

Jack: I would expect nothing less, but do me a favor. Please try to stay optimistic.

Kyle: [ Scoffs ] I guess I’ll have to try ’cause I have so many happy things going on in my life. In fact, I’m planning a bit of a surprise, and I’d like to enlist your help.

Jack: Okay. Sounds intriguing. What’s the plan?

Kyle: Mm, a wedding of sorts.

Jack: A wedding? For whom?

Sharon: Faith is headed to the university of michigan today.

Adam: Wow. Well, congratulations, faith.

Nick: Yeah, we’re gonna drop her off and help her get settled in.

Faith: I guess I should clarify. I’m taking your kidney back to college, since it already went once with you. But it’s my big freshman year, and if it hadn’t been for your donation, I wouldn’t be able to go. You made this day possible for me, and I want to thank you again.

Nick: We all do.

Sharon: Yes, I hope you know we’ll be forever grateful.

Adam: Well, I’m sure my kidney will have a much better time with faith anyway. So, I wish you a lot of luck and success on your new adventure.

Faith: Thanks.

Adam: Could I, uh, get a cup of coffee?

Sharon: Sure.

Adam: Sharon, this is a big day for you.

Sharon: Yeah. It is. Um, it’s an even bigger day for faith, though, and I’m so excited for her starting out this new chapter of her life.

Adam: Well, I guess, uh, faith and I have something more than a kidney in common then.

Sharon: What’s that?

Adam: I am starting a new chapter, too. I’m going to work with jack at jabot.

Sharon: When did that happen?

Adam: Yesterday. But jack and I have been discussing it for a while.

Sharon: I see.

Adam: I get the feeling you’re not, uh, entirely on board with this?

Sharon: Well, it’s not my decision to make. I wish you well. I just hope that you didn’t make this move so that you can stick it to victor.

Adam: No. I made it because jack actually values my input and respects my abilities as an executive. And I value his trust. So, my dad is a non-issue, as he should be.

Sharon: Well, that’s great. I’m glad to hear that. I’m glad you’re not channeling your anger into getting back at victor.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sharon: And instead, you’ve found something positive to focus on. That’s really great. I’m sure sally will be happy, too.

Adam: Sally? Wh– why did you mention her?

Sharon: Oh, she confided in me again, and she’s worried about you.

Adam: She spoke to you again? Are these chats between the two of you becoming a regular thing?

Sharon: Oh, I… I mean, what does it even matter, right? You’re not interested in being with her anymore, so I don’t even know what difference it makes. My husband and I have never been more active.

Phyllis: Oh, thank goodness. No more babysitters. Yay!

Summer: You know, this isn’t a get out of jail free card, mom.

Phyllis: Yeah. Thank you.

Summer: Oh —

Phyllis: No.

Summer: No. Mnh. Me.

Phyllis: You don’t have to worry about me. And I know it’s not a get out of jail free card. All I want to do for you, summer, is help you realize your dream and help you create something that’s long-lasting.

Summer: I certainly hope so.

Phyllis: Well, know so. This is a great opportunity for me, as well. And diane — she’s just, you know, an annoying byproduct.

Summer: Seriously? You just can’t help yourself from taking a cheap shot at her.

Phyllis: No, I can’T. Given our history, I can’T. Understand that. All the tension between me and diane — it will die out. And given that, um, if diane self-implodes, well, you know — that might be possible, even inevitable — will I shed a tear? No chance.

Kyle: The wedding summer and I had in milan was beautiful and unforgettable.

Jack: I absolutely concur.

Kyle: But I know there was one thing summer regrets. She missed having a celebration here in genoa city. So I was wondering if you’d be okay if I planned something at the house. Dad, did I ask for too much? Do you think I’m going overboard with this idea?

Jack: No, no, no, it’s — it’s a beautiful idea. My heart just swelled with the thought. I would be honored to celebrate your marriage in the abbott home.

Kyle: Great. Thank you. Oh, uh, I haven’t told summer about this. I wanted to make sure I planned everything first.

Jack: I’m sure she will be thrilled. Listen, we can talk about this some more. I’ve got to get to a meeting.

Kyle: Yeah, sure.

Jack: You can count on me to help in any way I can. Whatever it takes to make this celebration special.

Diane: What’s this about a celebration?

Adam: Excuse me, sharon.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I’m not sure I’m up for dealing with you right now.

Adam: Will you please join me on the patio? It will just take a moment.

Sally: I’m very busy, but, um…yeah, I think I could spare a minute.

Nick: Everything okay?

Sharon: Um, yeah, fine. I was just, um… anyway, where do we stand on this list?

Faith: Everything is almost packed, shipped, or crossed off the to-dos. We should be ready to leave this afternoon right on schedule.

Adam: Faith’s going off to college. I hope sharon’s ready. But I’m happy for faith. Big turning point in her life.

Sally: Good for faith. Happy for her. But I know you didn’t call me out here to talk about the adventures of your niece. So…what’s going on?

Music (“I swear”) plays

Adam: I don’t mean to beat around the bush. I know you’re busy. How are things going at newman media?

Sally: Things are going amazingly well. Chloe and I are setting the stage for some really big moves.

Adam: Mm. Well, it sounds like you and the newmans are working well together.

Sally: Actually, I haven’t had much one-on-one time with victoria, but nick is proving to be a terrifically nurturing and supportive boss.

Adam: Hmm. I’m not surprised. I knew you would work your magic and impress them enough to seal your position there.

Sally: Of course you did. It’s the whole reason why you broke up with me, isn’t it? Are we done here?

Adam: Look — no. Please. Will you just let me say what I need to say?

Nikki: Summer will benefit from diane’s departure just as much as the rest of the abbotts and the newmans. That woman staying in town will be a disaster for everybody.

Victor: I couldn’t agree more. But you must remember that it was summer who encouraged kyle to reconnect with his mother, although she knew the risks.

Nikki: Yes, but it’s obvious she’s only tolerating diane for his sake. I mean, the woman is not the kind of mother or mother-in-law that those kids deserve — or any kind of grandmother for harrison. I just know that when diane shows her true colors, everybody will see her for the fraud that she is. And then kyle’s eyes will be opened and summer can be loving and supportive, but not at all surprised.

Victor: Yeah.

Jack: She’s all yours.

Kyle: Okay, mom.

Diane: [ Chuckles ]

Kyle: I will tell you, but first, you need to understand this is a big surprise for summer. So, can I trust you to keep a secret?

Diane: Yes. My lips are sealed. I promise.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] I’m planning a wedding celebration for my wife in her hometown, with all of her family and friends to witness.

Diane: Oh, kyle! That is so sweet and wildly romantic.

Kyle: Oh, I think summer will love the idea.

Diane: I know she will. And I want to do whatever I can to help make this the spectacular day you both deserve.

Kyle: Thanks for offering, mom.

Diane: Yeah. I am — I am just so grateful to be here with you and my grandson at such a happy and important time. I missed so many of these moments.

Kyle: Well, the good news is you’re here now.

Diane: Yeah. You know, I know this wedding you’re planning is for summer, but, in a way, it — it almost feels like it’s for me, too, since I wasn’t here the first time. I am over the moon that I get to celebrate such a wonderful milestone with you. It’s gonna be so special.

Kyle: Well, that’s the plan.

Diane: Yeah.

[ Indistinct conversation ]

Summer: Looks like we walked in on something.

Diane: Oh, just, um, another day of counting my blessings. But I really need to get back to work. Uh…nice dress, phyllis.

Phyllis: Thank you so much. It’s marchetti.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

Faith: The last thing to do is say goodbye to noah. But I will be back in plenty of time to catch up with him before we leave.

Nick: Alright.

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: And there goes our baby girl. She’s all grown up, ready to take on the world.

Sharon: She’s my last one. Mariah’s married now, starting a life of her own.

Nick: And we’re very happy for her.

Sharon: Yep. And I remember when noah left. Broke my heart a little.

Nick: Yeah, me too. But we survived. And look — now he’s back.

Sharon: Yeah, you know, and faith is gonna be back soon, too. I mean, after all, the holidays are coming, and — and there’s three-day weekends. She said that she wants to work for newman when she graduates, so I would imagine she’ll move back to genoa city permanently.

Nick: Unless she wants to go work at one of our european divisions.

Sharon: No. Don’t even think that.

Nick: [ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone pings ]

[ Groans ]

Sharon: What? Trouble?

Nick: No. It’s just my dad. He wants to see me.

Sharon: Oh. Well, why don’t you go and do that? We still have some time before we need to leave. I hope it’s nothing serious.

Nick: When it’s my dad, when is it not serious? Oh, no. What’s wrong?

Mariah: We had an awful morning.

Sharon: What happened?

Mariah: Uh, we got turned down by a private adoption attorney.

Sharon: What? Why? I mean, I knew there’d be hurdles, but not right out of the gate.

Mariah: We wanted to be open about our past. We didn’t want to hide anything.

Tessa: We thought it was better than risking things come out and potentially delaying or affecting the process.

Mariah: So much for honesty being the best policy.

Sharon: What did this attorney say?

Mariah: Uh, she didn’t feel like it would be likely that we would be chosen by a prospective birth mother when we were compared to people that didn’t have…criminal records.

Nikki: I don’t know where the time goes. Can you believe that little dominic is already a year old? On top of faith going off to college.

Victor: Yep. All these milestones puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?

Nikki: Yes, it certainly does. But something tells me that you’re talking about something more specific.

Victor: Well, I can’t help but think about adam’s place in the family.

Nikki: I’m sorry that he’s let you down yet again.

Victor: I think this time it may be different. He promised not to be revengeful, you know? I mean, he could have evidence that could cause a lot of trouble for our family, but i haven’t seen it anywhere.

Nikki: Darling, please promise me that you won’t get your hopes up again. I mean, you should be focusing on how well your other children are doing. I know that adam’s distance is breaking your heart, but it’s not your fault that he seems incapable of being a meaningful member of this family.

Victor: I still feel there’s a chance that he’ll come around.

Nikki: Maybe there’s just too many wounds, too much anger over the years.

Victor: But I’m not gonna give up on him. He’s my son.

Sally: I know you have nowhere to be, but I do, and I’m not gonna let my work slide because of you.

Adam: Actually, I have somewhere to be now, too. Jack offered me co-ceo at jabot, and, uh, I took him up on it.

Sally: When did that happen? Did you have this cushy new job lined up when you walked out on me at newman media?

Adam: Mnh. Jack offered it to me out of the blue after I quit.

Sally: Huh. How’s that going for you? Bet you’re juggling a lot with this big new job and doing everything in your power to destroy your father at the same time.

Summer: Hey, what was — what was going on earlier when my mom and I walked in? You and diane seemed almost conspiratorial.

Kyle: Nothing for you to worry about. My mom’s emotions get the better of her sometimes, that’s all. She still finds it hard to believe that she was able to get her life back after all these years. And, hey, we need to go. We’re late for the conference call with milan.

Summer: Oh. Yeah.

Phyllis: Eavesdropping a little?

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Of course not. I was just marveling at how happy our kids are.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. And I’d like them to stay that way.

Diane: I’d like nothing more.

Phyllis: So, that little moment that summer and I walked in on?

Diane: Life is full of all kinds of moments, but that one was not for public consumption.

Phyllis: Oh, that’s interesting, considering how your life has been served up for public consumption today. Oh, you haven’t seen it? We really had our hands full with our two-year-old.

Sharon: This adoption attorney’s decision is just absurd, and it’s wrong. You too aren’t criminals. Where does she get off saying something like that about you?

Tessa: It’s true. We haven’t actually broken the law in a long time.

Mariah: But our records are far from spotless. I mean, I cringe to think at all the break-ins and robberies i committed.

Sharon: But you were forced into a cult by the people who stole you from me. They should be the ones taking all the blame for that. Ian ward — he couldn’t teach anyone right from wrong.

Tessa: I mean, I’m not innocent, either. I blackmailed you, nikki, phyllis, and victoria, and i stole nikki’s gun.

Sharon: But you did all of that to protect your sister, who was in very serious danger.

Tessa: Yeah, well, that part didn’t go over well with the lawyer, either. Turns out being mixed up with a sex-trafficking operation does not make us look like the best prospective parents.

Mariah: It’s enough to have lived through all of that trauma, but now it feels like we’re being punished for it. Years later. It’s not fair.

Tessa: I was prepared for this to be a long and difficult process, but I was not prepared for the person who’s supposed to be our advocate to reject us before we even get started.

Mariah: We thought we had gone through some horrible times and we had finally put it all behind us and moved on.

Sharon: Well, you did. And you have. I’m sorry, but this is just outrageous. I hope that the two of you are not planning on giving up now.

Phyllis: Oh, I guess you haven’t seen the latest, um, posting on talia morgan’s magazine site.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: I suppose she decided to scrap her article on ashland and do deep dive into your life.

Diane: [ Scoffs ]

Phyllis: Wow. Well, it’s a banner headline on her site.

Diane: Oh, and it’s what? It’s what? Just a bunch of gossip.

Phyllis: No. She’s not a gossip columnist. You know that. She’s an investigative journalist. You know — because you were fawning all over her yesterday.

Diane: Yeah, and this woman wrote about what exactly? Old news? Because I haven’t done anything wrong in years.

Phyllis: Mm. So says you.

Diane: Look, the people who matter have moved on from the past, and I don’t have the energy for those clinging to it.

Phyllis: You’ve been on your best behavior since you came into town, diane. But after reading this article, everyone will know that you are the most despicable and the most hated woman in genoa city. And that must disturb you in so many ways.

Diane: [ Sighs heavily ] “The long and winding road of diane jenkins. Back from the dead.”

Nikki: Ooh, this is too good. “Years ago, diane jenkins appeared to be the victim of a vicious murder.”

Victor: Whoa. So, your handiwork has paid off?

Nikki: Oh, you bet it has. Listen to this. “Now she has returned to the scene of the crime, alive and well and hoping to pick up where she left off.” But can she really overcome the trail of destruction she left behind?” I’ve got to give talia a call and tell her how brilliant this article is.

Victor: [ Laughs ]

[ Door closes ]

Nick: Hey, dad.

Victor: Hi, son.

Nick: Uh, I’m guessing your summons has to do with faith leaving today. Did you forget to give her a gift or something?

Victor: No. It has to do with my concern about sally spectra. How do you think she’s doing at newman media?

Nick: So far, she’s lived up to our expectations.

Victor: Really? But not to mine. I’d asked her to try to convince adam to stay with the company, and she was not able to do that. So, as far as I’m concerned, she’s not up to her task.

Adam: I don’t want to talk about my father. I am worried about you right now.

Sally: Well, you certainly don’t need to be.

Adam: Not according to chloe.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] What did she say to you?

Adam: She — she was simply acting out of concern for her friend and boss. But she accused me of trying to mess with your head, which was never my intention.

Sally: Well, for your information, my head is perfectly fine. Completely un-messed with.

Adam: I certainly want to believe that. And chloe was very adamant that I need to make it clear that there is no future for us as a couple.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I cannot believe that chloe’s actually getting involved in my personal life. So, is that the reason why you brought me out here — to follow through with chloe’s request? You want to give me more reasons why you don’t want to be with me? Is there really anything that you could say that could hurt me more than you already have?

Adam: No, sally. Okay? You’ve got it all wrong.

Sally: Then what?

Adam: I want to say that I’m sorry. Your heart is at the heart of everything you do.

Sharon: That adoption attorney better not have discouraged you in any way, okay? We’ll find another one. We’ll find a better one, one that can see that you two have gotten your lives together in spectacular fashion.

Mariah: You’re more than biased, okay? You’re my mom, for god’s sake.

Tessa: And mine, too, pretty much.

Sharon: Which puts me in the perfect position to know that both of you will be great parents.

Mariah: Thank you, mom.

Sharon: And neither one of you are quitters. You know, it takes faith most of all, but it also takes strength and stamina to be a parent. And I can testify that you both have that and a lot more. A mom is someone who speaks up for someone else who just had surgery and can’t talk for themselves. A mom is someone who knows that their loved one is going through something, even if they’re miles and miles away. Your past is not gonna make you worse parents. It’s going to make you better because you learned from it. And you’ll know how to keep your own children away from falling into those same traps. You just watch. Your kids are gonna be the greatest gift in your life. And they’ll also be your greatest heartaches sometimes, too, unfortunately. But you will be their rocks. You’ll be there with them every step of the way, until one day they’ve grown up and they go out into the world on their own. But you won’t worry about that because you’ll know that you have prepared them for it. And you’ll still be there with them, coaching them through all of life’s journeys, all the highs and lows… because that is what a good mother does. Come here.

Phyllis: Juicy, isn’t it? And I forgot to tell you — apparently, it’s not just this article. This is the first of a series of articles on you.

Phyllis: Wait till everybody gets a load of this.

Jack: [ Breathes deeply ]

Nick: Come on, dad. You didn’t honestly believe sally was gonna talk adam into doing something he was determined not to, right? I mean, that was never gonna happen. Adam is nothing if not stubborn.

Victor: Your brother always had a chip on his shoulder when it came to doing a favor for his family, you know? But I still think sally specter should have been able to convince him to stay with newman media.

Nick: Adam didn’t just walk away from newman media and the family. He also walked away from sally. I get the impression she was very hurt by the way he did it, even though he claims to have done it for her. She just wants to put the whole situation in her rearview mirror.

Victor: Do you really think sally spectra is able to run a company?

Nick: I know you don’t want to hear this, but she’s done everything we’ve asked of her, and she’s done a great job. And I actually think she’s gonna do an even better job and excel once she gets adam out of her system.

Victor: Yeah, but, see, that’s the point, son. Again, personal feelings — what does that have to do with running a company? Nothing. I don’t think she’s capable of it. Besides that, do you remember that she convinced summer to move to milan, thereby endangering the relationship with kyle? I don’t trust that woman. I think you should fire her.

Sally: So, what exactly are you sorry for? Because I have a long list of your offenses that are apology-worthy.

Adam: And I apologize for every single one of them, sally, okay? I was a cruel jerk. And I feel terrible for lying to you. And I should have trusted that you and I — we could have decided together how to handle the situation. Instead, I didn’t let you weigh in at all.

Sally: Yeah, that wasn’t fair to me.

Adam: I know. But all I could think about was protecting you and your position at newman media. I mean, the last thing that i wanted is for my family’s distrust of me to impact your opportunity to shine in your role. And you have. You have. You have proven yourself worthy, despite all the doubts that they have had about you.

Sally: Yeah. Apparently, they had more faith in me than you did.

Adam: I didn’t want you to be collateral damage in this war that I was gonna re-launch with my family. But now…there is no war. And I just — I should’ve believed that you and I, as a team, could figure out a way to keep you out of it. You know, I guess I just — I have been burned too many times, and I have made mistakes in my past that I never wanted to make again.

Sally: Like with chelsea.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Okay, sally, you and I — we were always better working together. And I should have trusted in that, should have trusted in us. And I know you have every reason to think this is just more bull from me. But you know me. You see right through my lies, and you have been right about me this whole time. So, can’t you tell this is sincere? This apology is coming from my heart. Is there any way that you can forgive me?

Chloe: Okay, so our watchwords for this evening are “prioritize” and “delegate.” And, hopefully, by the end of this conversation, we’ll have figured out if we’re going to keep omega news or dump it.

Sally: That is the age-old problem, isn’t it? Do we continue to invest in an underperforming platform, hope that things change, or do we just accept that it will never live up to expectations and just move on?

Chloe: A few minutes ago I thought we were in agreement that we’re going to put the company’s resources elsewhere and give some added support to a younger, fresher company.

Sally: Yeah, but what if there’s a reason that newman stayed with omega for this long, and it was just waiting for the right ceo to give it some oomph? I was there for the good times. Yes, sure, it’s struggled a little bit recently and the numbers aren’t great, but when it’s good, it can be number one. It just needs the right circumstances.

Chloe: Hey, sally, please pay attention to the clock.

Sally: Okay, you just don’t give up on something just because it’s hit a rough patch. All of us go through trying times. Is it a diamond in the rough? Undoubtedly. But I’ve seen glimmers of brilliance. It could be an industry-changer. I mean, how do you just walk away from a gem like that?

Chloe: Cut the crap, sally. We’re not talking about omega. We stopped talking about omega 10 minutes ago. So here’s what you have to do. Forget about adam, because if you keep letting these questions about him take over your brain, you’ll just wind up another casualty.

Chelsea: [ Sighs, sniffles ]

[ Sighs, sniffles ]

[ Knock on door ]

Adam: Chelsea. Hey, it’s me. Let me in.

Chelsea: Adam?

Adam: Yeah. You decent?

Chelsea: Have I ever been?

Adam: Well, good point. I’ve seen every version of you, so just let me in.

Chelsea: [ Sniffles, sighs ] Okay.

[ Sighs, sniffles ]

[ Sighs ] Hey. What’s going on?

Adam: There’s something that you need to see.

Chelsea: It can’t wait till morning?

Adam: Nope, because it’s going to blow your mind.

Phyllis: Bang. There you go. It’s the last of its kind. Enjoy. Ha. You’re funny.

Nick: What is this?

Phyllis: You know what it is. It’s all your money back for the loan that you gave me for the grand phoenix. And thank you, by the way. That’s it. Oh, gosh. You know? I sold it to chancellor-winters. It’s over. I have to pay back my debts.

Nick: I gave this to you a long time ago. There were no strings attached, remember? But you refused.

Phyllis: Yeah. So here we are, the end of an era.

Nick: Seems like you came up with the idea for your hotel like a lifetime ago.

Phyllis: A lifetime ago, right. That was my rise from the ashes after all the bridges had burned. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Nick: Come on. Yeah, you could have. When there’s something you want, I dare anyone to get in your way.

Phyllis: You say that like it’s a good thing.

Nick: I mean, it can be. If the grand phoenix was in the hands of anyone else, it would have just been some other hotel, you know, come and go, but you created this luxury destination where everybody keeps coming back. It’s unforgettable, like you.

Phyllis: You’re just saying that because it’s true.

[ Both chuckle ]

Nick: It is true. You really created something special.

Phyllis: Thank you. I think I did, too. And I think that the staff will talk about me and what a great employer I was and how I made everybody stay comfortable and how good I was to the guests. It’s a fact. That would be true.

Nick: It would be true.

Phyllis: Oh, it was — it was hard, you know? It was a lot of hard work. You know that. I put out a lot of fires. Oh, but I made it into something. And that escape club. Wow. And that was amazing. That was pretty genius on my part. Who knew that I’d be the one to make people’s dreams come true?

Nick: Some of us knew.

Phyllis: I’m walking away, and I made a profit, so that’s good. I made it a success, and that’s what I wanted to do. I am out to dream another dream and turn that into a reality.

Diane: Talia morgan… am I right? The investigative reporter?

Talia: Well, that depends. Who wants to know? Hello? You are?

Sally: You make it sound like I’m obsessing over adam.

Chloe: Because you are.

Sally: You could not be further from the truth.

Chloe: Okay, I know all the symptoms. I just can’t find the cure. I warned you about this many, many times. This is what he does. He finds a beautiful woman who’s just a little broken around the edges maybe, and things start to burn bright for a while, and then he breaks it off. But he still finds a way to keep you interested and maintain a connection to make you believe that there’s still something between you that’s undeniable and immortal.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, of course you will. Of course you will. Because adam is an expert at finding women who just can’t let go. You know what you’ll do next? Because I do. You make a mental note of all of the wonderful things that you two did together. How he made you feel so special and important. And you’re chalking all of the really screwed-up stuff he said and did to the trauma he suffered as a child. Because, sure, he mistreated you and he acted like a full piece of human garbage, but, no, no, that’s not the real adam. That’s not the man that you fell in love with. He’s different.

Sally: I’m not in love.

Chloe: No, please. This is how it all starts. This is how it all starts. The denial. Yeah, I went through this, this ill-fated obsession with adam, with chelsea so many times I know it by heart, and it is wearing me out. Seeing someone else waste their time and energy thinking about this guy and, worst, still loving him?

[ Sighs ] Please don’t make me go through that again. I just can’T. I’m not that strong, and adam definitely isn’t worth it, and you deserve a hell of a lot better.

Chelsea: Connor made this?

Adam: Uh-huh. At camp.

Chelsea: It’s so good.

Adam: Right? He’s been begging me to get a wood-burning kit, but i said you would never forgive me.

Chelsea: Oh, I told him the same thing. I said, absolutely not. No way. Oh, my god. I love it. It’s the three — our names, the three of our names.

Adam: Yeah, do you see how the “c” for chelsea is the “c” for connor?

Chelsea: Mm, and the last letter of my name is the beginning of yours.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Kid’s a genius.

Chelsea: He really is. Oh, my gosh, I know exactly where I’m going to put this. I got to keep this one, right? He can make you another?

Adam: I’m sure connor will get a kick out of making another.

Chelsea: Yeah. Wow. He’s a special kid.

Adam: He is. And he’s happy and healthy. Whatever else we did, we did this right.

Chelsea: Yeah.

Adam: Yeah. Anyway, that’s not the only reason that I came to see you.

Chelsea: Okay.

Adam: I wanted to tell you that I took your advice to heart, and I went to see jack, and I accepted his offer to work at jabot.

Chelsea: Adam, you did it?

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Chelsea: That’s incredible. I’m so happy for you.

Chelsea: And I’m proud of you, too. I know that’s a big decision — resisting the urge to take down victor, ignoring the impulse to just burn it all down.

[ Sighs ] What?

Adam: I mean, revenge and self-destruction. Without even telling you, you knew what road I was on.

Chelsea: Well, we’re part of each other. You know, jack is going to catch some heat for bringing you on.

Adam: That’s an understatement. I have miles to go before I can win over the rest of the family and convince them to trust me. But the important part is I took the better choice, and that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t taken your advice. So thank you. It means a lot to me that you still have my back.

Chelsea: Of course.

Adam: And I want to do the same for you.

Phyllis: So, how are things going for you, mr. Coo? Dare I ask?

Nick: Let’s not talk about that, alright? I know how you feel about me being here.

Phyllis: I could be happy for you, even though I totally disagree with your decision to be here.

Nick: Okay, it’s going great. Thank you.

Phyllis: Great. See? I’m happy. Look at that.

Nick: Yes, I love working with my mom and victoria.

Phyllis: Great. Great. How is victoria?

Nick: Doing awesome. You know, very well, considering what she went through.

Nick: She came back really strong and focused. She has all these goals for newman enterprises, and I’m here to make sure she achieves those goals. What is that face?

Phyllis: We know the truth.

Nick: What truth?

Phyllis: We know who’s really behind victoria. He’s holding the puppet strings. Victor is having somebody else doing his bidding.

Nick: Let’s talk about something else.

Phyllis: Alright, yeah, let’s talk about something else, because all of that messy newman stuff, you know, that was the demise of our relationship, so…

Nick: I’ll avoid it if you do.

Phyllis: Okay, I’ll avoid it. I just want to say that I’m happy for you, and I’m happy that you’re working with your family, and the newmans seem to be one big happy family right now.

Nick: You know, I don’t have blinders on when it comes to my father, right? I know exactly what he’s capable of.

Phyllis: I’m glad you’re not in denial. Hey, listen.

Talia: Well, I’m working on a story about the recently deceased ashland locke.

Diane: You don’t say.

Talia: I’m not at liberty to disclose any details. I’m sure you understand.

Diane: Oh, oh, of course, but, you know, ashland and i shared a unique connection.

Talia: Did you?

Diane: Yeah, he raised my grandson.

Talia: Fascinating.

Diane: You know, if you’d like, I could maybe help shed some light on the man, answer any questions you have.

Talia: I’d appreciate that. You wouldn’t happen to have time now, would you?

Diane: And I can’t believe that I’m going to help

Chloe: The sooner you purge yourself from adam, the better off you’ll be. We’ll both be. I’m not just saying this for the good of the company. I really care about you. You’re talented and energetic, and adam will deplete you of everything. I hate seeing him put you through the wringer like this.

Sally: Thank you for caring about me, chloe. It really means a lot. But you know how it is when you love someone.

Chloe: Oh, no. Oh, no. You said it.

Sally: Well, you can’t just hit the “do not love” button even after they break your heart. Especially now that I know that adam only called it quits with me to protect me.

Chloe: You said it yourself, that he should have trusted you and believed in you. Instead, he put his obsessions first.

Sally: But at least he believed in me to succeed here.

Chloe: Sally, no. Do not get sucked back in. Break the chain. Resist him.

Sally: I am. I am. I will. I mean it. Thank you for the chat, chloe. There’s something that I really have to go do.

Adam: Chelsea, something is obviously bothering you. And whatever it is, I think is a little more than jitters over finding a job.

Chelsea: I appreciate your concern for me, but I’m fine. I promise.

Adam: You know, when we were talking earlier —

Chelsea: You know, don’t make too much of that. You just caught me at a weak moment.

Adam: But it was nice letting our guard down. We were reconnecting.

Chelsea: It was nice, but it doesn’t mean I’m ready to dive into the deep recesses of my personal life with you.

Adam: Okay, well, if not with me, I hope you talk to somebody. Somebody that you do trust.

Chelsea: Okay, I’ll be sure to do that.

Adam: I hope you do, ’cause god knows I have learned the hard way that bearing the pain doesn’t make it go away.

Chelsea: You’ve learned that? Okay.

Adam: Yes. It can grow. It can fester and manifest itself in terrible ways down the line, chelsea.

Chelsea: Okay, dr. Newman, this session is over.

Adam: I’m just trying to give you my two cents.

Chelsea: Why does everyone keep acting like I’m one step away from a breakdown? I brought in ensure max protein

Chelsea: Sorry. Didn’t mean to come across so passionate. No need to alert the authorities.

Adam: [ Sighs ] It’s fine.

Chelsea: I need you to understand how it makes me feel. I’m having a bad day. People have them all the time, all over the world. But instead of offering me a mai tai, everyone keeps suggesting I see a shrink.

Adam: Chelsea, there’s no shame in talking to a professional.

Chelsea: And it starts with the word “shame.”

[ Sighs ] Adam, I have done some stuff. It doesn’t mean I am incapable of functioning. I just need you to see me as a normal person. I’m allowed to have the freedom to vent like other people do.

Adam: Chelsea, other people have not been through what you have been through. And, yes, I am aware that I played a pivotal role in getting you off track. And because I feel responsible for so much of your pain, I’m invested in just trying to get you some relief.

Chelsea: So maybe this isn’t about me at all. Maybe this is just the guilt talking.

Adam: Okay, I get it. You’re evading. Okay. Did I stumble too far into your danger zone?

[ Cellphone pings ]

Chelsea: You should probably get that.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Look, I’m — I’m sorry if I overstepped. The last thing I wanted to do was upset you or offend you.

Sally: Hope I’m not intruding.

Phyllis: Ugh, you always are.

Phyllis: I have some work to do myself at marchetti, actually. It’s really fun to work with our daughter. It’s a revelation, actually. People try to take her down on every occasion, but she rises like a phoenix. Just like her mom.

Phyllis: Oh, I was just giving nick the final payment for the loan he gave me for the grand phoenix. I had a very interesting conversation with our new pal talia.

Nikki: Is that right?

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. I was giving her a couple tidbits from diane’s past that have yet to be exposed.

Nikki: And?

Phyllis: And I could see her investigative-journalist mind working overtime.

Nikki: Well, judging from the text that she sent us earlier, it seems like she’s getting ready to write an in-depth exposé on the real diane jenkins.

Diane: I’m so used to seeing your byline on all of my favorite articles, and here you are, right in my very own backyard. I am curious, though, how you’re going to breathe some new life into these same old facts. I mean, so much has already been reported about ashland.

Talia: Well, my goal is to go beyond what’s already been published. The secret to my success is my ability to dig deep, to find out what people are hiding and bring it all to light.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, I’m just thrilled that you’re interested in what I can bring to the story. What do you want to know?

Sally: I’m trying to decide if we should drop one of our news platforms. I saw potential in it when I first took over. I thought that it had gotten a little too predictable, so I made some cosmetic changes, but my main thing was the content.

Nick: That’s what keeps people coming back.

Sally: Exactly. I mean, we have to have reliable information, some offbeat stuff, but the main focus should always be authenticity.

Nick: What are the numbers?

Sally: Not exactly where I’d like them to be. This morning I was ready to dump it, and now I… I don’t know. I’m wondering if we should just hold on to it, see if it can gain some traction. What do you think?

Nick: Sally, the first time we met in newman media, vick and I were five minutes away from firing you. You spoke to us that day with such passion and conviction about how you wanted to run newman media that you made us believe in you, especially me. So what’s going on? This person with all these innovative ideas is all of a sudden second-guessing herself. Why?

Adam: What’s the emergency?

Chloe: Well, you seem scattered. Did I interrupt a crossword puzzle, or were you rearranging your spice cabinet, mr. Man of leisure?

Adam: I was in the middle of an intense conversation with chelsea, and I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but she appears to be in a pretty precarious position.

Chloe: Okay, you can stop right there, because that is the last thing that I want to hear. You’re spending time with chelsea so she can unburden herself, and at the same time, you’re messing around with sally’s head.

Adam: No, I’m not playing games with either one of them, chloe, but I am really worried about chelsea because I think she really needs help.

Chloe: From you? Because if she’s struggling, it’s from what you did to her.

Adam: I know. I know. And she knows that I know. I told her as much.

Chloe: It was an all-too-rare moment of self-realization. Congratulations. So are you going to show sally the same consideration?

Adam: [ Sighs ] The last thing that I want is to hurt her.

Chloe: Prove it.

Diane: And as it turned out, my son kyle was harrison’s biological father.

Talia: Fascinating, though I wonder what that was like for ashland. I mean, here’s a man who kept so many secrets only to find out his wife was keeping the biggest of them all.

Diane: Hmm. We never discussed it, but maybe that’s what set him on the path that eventually led to his downfall.

Talia: So based on what you told me, you only learned you’re a grandmother recently.

Diane: Yes, I did.

Talia: Is that what then made you leave L.A. And come here? I’m trying to get my timeline straight.

Diane: Oh, yeah, I — well, I had moved to L.A. Because of personal issues, but then I worked hard, and I got my life in a good place, and I came back to be with my son. And harrison, the little light of my life, was the unexpected miracle that I’ve been so blessed to receive.

Talia: Well, that’s so touching, though I doubt ashland felt the same way. I mean, there you were, one more person with a biological connection to harrison that he didn’t have.

Diane: We actually had a very civil relationship.

Talia: Interesting. Tell me how that came about.

Diane: You know, I’m so curious how you’re going to tell his story. There are so many ways of looking at a person’s life. Are you just digging for dirt, or do you intend to portray ashland locke as a misunderstood mogul?

Nikki: What the hell?

Phyllis: Don’t stare.

Nikki: Well, somebody needs to explain to our journalist friend what it means to bury the lede.

Phyllis: She said she wanted to meet with us, but she didn’t tell us that she was going to be here.

Nikki: Well, maybe it wasn’t planned. I mean, diane has a way of showing up where she’s not wanted.

Phyllis: So what do we do? I mean, we leave and we come back when the coast is clear? I mean —

Nikki: Let’s text talia and find out what’s going on. Then we’ll decide what we do.

Diane: Phyllis, nikki, come meet someone.

Nikki: Ah, there goes that plan.

Phyllis: What the hell do we do now?

Nikki: Fake a smile and hold on tight.

Diane: Talia morgan, award-winning journalist, I would like you to meet two of genoa city’s most prominent citizens, phyllis summers and nikki newman.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m not familiar. I —

Diane: Oh, she’s from L.A., But I’m sure you’ve read her work.

Nikki: It’s a pleasure, ms. Morgan.

Phyllis: Uh, yes, it’s a pleasure. What brings you to our fine town?

Diane: She’s doing a story about ashland.

Nikki: Oh, well, I hope you leave out newman enterprises, because I would hate for my family’s business reputation to be sullied.

Phyllis: Uh-huh. How’d the two of you meet?

Diane: Oh, well, I just came in to grab a bite, and i couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Talia morgan? Here? So I just barged right over, and we’ve been talking.

Talia: And imagine my surprise when I learned diane has a connection to my subject. I mean, what are the chances?

Phyllis: Yeah, what are the chances? I mean, if I may, you could possibly think it’s a stroke of luck running into diane, but I assure you, it’s not. She’s not a reliable source.

Diane: Oh, phyllis.

[ Chuckles ] We always joke like this.

Nikki: Oh, she’s right. Phyllis is. I mean, I might trust diane to give me the right time of day, but only if I verify it with a third party.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]

Diane: Nikki, I guess I need to remind you that I was instrumental in having ashland arrested for violating the restraining order that was put in place to keep him away from harrison.

Phyllis: And she always exaggerates her good deeds.

Nikki: Ah, that is true. She will try to tell you she has stood toe-to-toe with the saints. Then again, maybe she has. I mean, there was that miraculous return from the dead.

Talia: Sounds like a juicy story.

Nikki: Oh, you have no idea.

Sally: I don’t understand your question. I have an abundance of ideas, some of which are, if I do say so myself, brilliant. But I just like to think things through from all angles.

Nick: I think there’s a lot more going on here, and it’s not criticism. Sally, you’ve proven you have what it takes to run newman media. Trust me, if you didn’t, you’d be gone. But I think there’s something getting in the way of that, and I would like to get to the root of it.

Sally: He — it — it won’T.

Nick: Look, we all want you to reach your full potential, you know, we all want you to succeed. So just be honest with me. What is going on?

Sally: You’re right.

[ Sighing ] There was… an outside issue that may have caused me to question my initial decision.

Nick: Adam.

Chloe: You finally did something decent when you broke up with sally. You not only saved her job, but you probably spared her tons of therapy moving on. And then you mucked it all up by claiming that you still loved her, that you stepped aside to save her dream, that it was a selfless act.

Adam: Mm-hmm. It was the truth.

Chloe: Oh, my god.

[ Scoffs ] Are you serious? It was the exact opposite of selfless, you big jerk. And now she’s got her head all turned around. She can’t even focus on her job, which means that she’s probably going to fall back and then she’ll fail. All because you had to go and make yourself out to be the hero, you dummy.

Adam: Well, if there’s one thing you and I can agree on, it’s that I am no hero.

Chloe: Okay, well, before you go and hang your cape up, there is one last act of kindness I’d like to request.

Adam: What is it?

Chloe: I am begging you to make it crystal clear to sally that there is no future for the two of you.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Nick: You’re welcome. You handled my prying very well.

Sally: I’m going to take that as a compliment and proof that I should always follow my good instincts, the very thing that convinced you that I’m the right person for the job. So I’m just going to take a deeper look at this whole news conundrum and make a call.

Nick: There you go. Sally, I always trust your instincts. But if you want to bounce some ideas around, my door will always be open for you.

Sally: Thanks, nick. That’s good to know. And I promise my personal life will not interfere with my job. You have my word.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: Go to sally and find some way to convince her that when you dumped her it wasn’t a selfless act of love and protection. Go be the jerk that I see.

Adam: I’m not sure that i can, chloe.

Chloe: Oh, come on. Come on. Be the cruel, selfish, heartless bastard we all know you are at your core, the ruthless, inhuman —

Adam: Mm-hmm. I get it. Message received.

Chloe: Go break that girl’s heart. She’ll get over you. But she has to know that she needs to get over you. Otherwise, she’s going to be staring off at the skyline, wondering if you’re ever going to take her back. So you let her know that it is a big no. Do you want her to fail after you’ve dumped her just so she can keep her job?

Adam: No, of course.

Chloe: Then you have to do this to make sure that she doesn’t wreck her career. Haven’t you done enough damage from one lifetime?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Why can’t you commit to something as simple as a family outing for the sake of our son?

Adam: Relax, chelsea. I didn’t say that i wouldn’t do it.

Chelsea: Well, you didn’t say you would, either. Why? Is it because sally’s here? You don’t want to send her the wrong message?

Billy: We are good together. This relationship is unlike any other one that I have in my life. It’s a unique connection. It’s alright. You know, we’ve been working closely together lately, and, uh, the moment was misinterpreted. It happens to the best of us.

Chelsea: Can we just pretend that never happened? We need to focus because this is our final podcast, so let’s just move on.

Billy: You don’t think we should talk about this for a minute? I mean —

Chelsea: I absolutely do not.

[ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Oh, here comes the explosion.

Diane: Oh, no. No explosion. Not today or ever. You know, phyllis, it’s clear you’re trying to goad me into having an emotional meltdown in front of this journalist. But I apologize, talia, for the bad behavior. And, ladies, I apologize for not giving you what you so desperately desire. Good night.

Nikki: I cannot believe that —

Phyllis: Shh, shh. Oh, my gosh. That was amazing. Tell us everything.

Talia: Well, according to diane jenkins, she’s a loving mother, a doting grandmother, and she’s done a lot to overcome adversity.

Nikki: How did you manage to keep a straight face?

Talia: I mean, she’s very entertaining, especially knowing all that she’s leaving out. She’s a real piece of work.

Phyllis: Mm, yeah. What do we do now?

Talia: Well, I’ve had a lot of experience dealing with people like diane. You apply pressure, push the right buttons, and it’s amazing what all comes out and how they give themselves away.

Phyllis: Yeah. This is going to be good. Mm-hmm.

Nick: Hey. You getting ready for the dinner rush?

Abby: Yeah. We’re down a hostess. Are you here by yourself?

Nick: I was having lunch earlier with dad and vick. I just stuck around for a while.

Abby: Ah.

Nick: Have you talked to chance recently? I tried to call him earlier. Went straight to voicemail.

Abby: Uh, yeah, I was with him earlier, but then he got called in to work, so that’s probably why he didn’t answer his phone.

Nick: That makes sense.

Abby: We had a mini first birthday celebration for dominic at the park.

Nick: Has it been a year already?

Abby: I know. Can you believe it?

[ Chuckles ]

Nick: Oh, man. You know, what I can’t believe is that you didn’t invite his favorite uncle to the party. I missed all the cake, the balloons, everything.

Abby: Well, don’t worry. We’re gonna have a bigger celebration with the extended family when things calm down a bit.

Nick: You are crazy if you think things are ever gonna calm down with the newmans. Hey. You okay?

Chelsea: I know. It’s so good to hear your voice, too, connor.

Chance: Hey, chelsea. You alright?

Allie: Man, I have to say, moving out to genoa city turned out to have so many more upsides than I ever expected.

Noah: Present company included?

Allie: Oh, yes.

Noah: [ Sighs ]

Allie: What?

Noah: Nothing.

Allie: Say it.

Noah: No, nothing. It’s —

Allie: No. Say it.

Noah: I was gonna make a lame chemistry joke, but stopped myself in time, considering my poor attempts at humor almost tanked us in the beginning.

Allie: Well, that was then, and this is now. I insist on hearing your lame joke.

Noah: Mnh-mnh, it was so bad, I already forgot it.

Allie: Well, maybe — maybe you can forensically reconstruct it. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Noah: [ Breathes deeply ]

Allie: Remember when we first started dating and you told me that your sense of humor was an acquired taste?

Noah: Mm-hmm.

Allie: Well, I think I have definitely acquired the taste.

Noah: No, no, things are going too well. I can’t risk it.

Allie: Oh, so you do remember it.

Noah: Yeah.

Allie: Well, tell me.

Noah: No.

Allie: Tell me. Otherwise, I will —

Noah: Or else what? What are you gonna do? You gonna tickle it out of me, huh?

Chelsea: To answer your question, I’m not having a great day, and you’re not the first person to notice, which makes me realize I’m not doing a great job of coping.

[ Sighs ] You know, it’s like, right when you think you have a handle on things…

[ Sniffles ]

Chance: Yeah. You know, I’ve worked undercover for so long, you’d think I’d be good at masking my emotions, but nope, especially with abby. She can just see right through me, you know?

Chelsea: Well, yeah. And you shouldn’t keep anything from your wife. She loves you so much. You both are very lucky to have each other.

Chance: Do you mind if I sit?

Chelsea: That’s sweet, but you don’t have to try to make me feel better.

Chance: Well, the person I’m supposed to meet — he’s not here yet. So, I could go stand at the other side of the bar if you’d like me to, but it feels a little silly.

Jack: Adam. Hey, come on in.

Adam: Well, thanks for carving out time for me.

Abby: I’m great. You, on the other hand…

Nick: What about me?

Abby: [ Sighs ] Well, just after everything that you went through that night, I’ve just — I’ve been worried about you.

Nick: I’m alright.

Abby: Look, I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but that sounds a lot like the assurances that chance used to make when he got home from spain. “Hey, everything’s fine.” But it really wasn’t that simple.

Nick: I guess…what I did — you know, it really weighs on me.

Abby: I hope that you know that you were justified in protecting our sister.

Nick: I know, abby, but living with the knowledge of taking another man’s life, whether I intended to or not, is hard.

Abby: And I’m sure it’s only natural to have those thoughts, but you are a good person. And you just got caught up in the middle of a terrible, violent situation. You had to make a snap judgment call, and you did what you had to do. And what makes me so angry is that ashland is still tormenting all of us from beyond the grave.

Nick: Well, our father doesn’t seem like he’s tortured with regret.

Abby: You know dad. He doesn’t second-guess his decisions.

Nick: No, he doesn’T.

Abby: And in case it helps, you’re not the only one feeling this way. Chance is struggling with it, too.

Chance: Yeah, I totally know how it feels when the world is just coming at you. You know, it feels like it’s too much. And then just the littlest thing tips the scale. Done for the day.

Chelsea: Yep. You caught me having a moment when you walked in, but I’ll get past it. You know, people assume, because of my past and because of my recent stay in a mental hospital —

Chance: Oh, I wasn’t judging, by the way. You just seem distressed. You know, it happens to everybody. And as far as that goes, I think you’d be surprised to know that I’m actually seeing a therapist for my own mental-health issues.

Chelsea: Good for you. Because of what you went through in spain?

Chance: Yeah. Yeah. And I’ll admit it, I definitely got pushed into the whole getting help thing.

Chelsea: Huh. What a coincidence. Me too!

Chance: But you know what? I’m glad I did it ’cause this guy, he’s just — you know, he’s making me see things in a new light. He’s definitely made me realize that I don’t have the control that I thought I did over the universe. I don’t have any, to tell you the truth.

Chelsea: Wow. Your therapist sounds really good. Mine was just so-so.

Chance: Oh, I’m sorry about that.

Chelsea: So, give me some words of wisdom.

Chance: Yeah. Um, alright. Well…I think the most important thing that I came away with is that things — they don’t always work out the way that you think they should, right? You can play by the rules. You can do everything right. But there are just scenarios where the rules aren’t adequate to address what’s going on. You know, people — they get stuff thrown at them all the time. And sometimes they just can’t handle it. So, you can either waste time and energy by getting worked up, getting upset. Or you can just accept the fact that that’s life. That’s part of it. You move on, and you look for solutions. Easier said than done. That’s for sure.

Chelsea: Well, that’s where i keep getting stuck, you know? Everyone keeps saying, “just put one foot in front of the other,” but no one tells you the right path to take. So, I choose a path, and then it gets cut off before I’ve gotten anywhere.

Chance: And then once you’ve chosen that path, you can’t reverse course out of there, right? The way back is blocked. Yeah. You know, whenever I start to feel lost like that, what really helps me I try to look for these little things, you know, little, tiny moments that’ll either give you some hope, some strength. I don’t know. Most of the time, it’s usually something about my son.

Chelsea: Yeah. For me, too. I don’t know what I would do without connor.

Jack: We can talk about the bonus structure in more detail. First, I want to know that the year-one salary is to your liking.

Adam: Uh, I think I can live with it.

Jack: Good. That’s what I want to hear. I am glad I held out hope that you would change your mind. You didn’t make me wait too long.

Adam: Luckily, the stars aligned for both of us. So, um, when would you like me to start?

Jack: How’s yesterday work for you?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Tomorrow it is then.

Jack: Glad to hear it. Look, as far as divvying up responsibilities, I can tell you what kyle and I set up, or we can start from scratch. As a matter of fact, that’s probably a better idea, given your years of management experience and your relative lack of experience in the cosmetics industry.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Before we dive into all that, i just — I have a few — and i hesitate to call them reservations, but —

Jack: You got questions, I have answers. What’s on your mind?

Adam: Well, for starters, we haven’t touched on how the rest of your family is going to react, jack. They tend not to be fans of mine. You know I’m used to dealing with skepticism and distrust, but I just — I don’t want to be the cause of any difficulties for you.

Jack: Thank you for your concern. You have nothing to worry about. In the event that you changed your mind and decided to take the job, I convinced them this was a good idea.

Adam: Them? Ashley, kyle, et cetera everybody?

Jack: Most of them. Look, I’m just happy you didn’t take the other project, since I’m guessing it was something to get back at victor.

Adam: Well, that’s more of a hobby than a career move.

Jack: Adam, as a friend and a soon-to-be colleague, I am telling you it is long past time for you to leave that obsession behind. I have bigger things for you to do.

Billy: Jackie! It’s 5:00 somewhere! Let’s get a drink! What are you doing here?

Adam: Your brother and I — we were just shooting the breeze.

Billy: Well, I’m sure that’s not true.

Jack: Adam and I were having a little business discussion. Could I get a rain check?

Billy: Oh, god. You’re seriously gonna do this, aren’t you? Mornings are our time,

Jack: Billy, I think you and I agreed this is my decision. I am delighted that adam has decided to join me at the helm.

Billy: So, he’s just decided? So, it’s not actually final yet? That’s good, jack. You can change your mind.

Adam: You know, he is right, jack. We haven’t signed anything, so if you have any reservations —

Jack: I don’T. Adam and I were just working out the terms of his deal. There has been no announcement, but as far as I’m concerned, this is official.

[ Cellphone ringing ] I will contact legal about getting a contract going.

Adam: Sounds good.

Jack: Guys, if you will forgive me, I have to take this call. Can you give me the office? Hey, doug. Been expecting your call.

[ Door closes ]

Billy: You know I don’t trust you. I really never have. So, whatever this is, whatever you have planned, know that i will be watching your every move.

Adam: I don’t know how you expect to do that since you haven’t worked here yourself in years. Why does it even matter to you who jack hires?

Billy: It matters very much, adam. This is my family company. This is my father’s legacy. And you destroy everything you touch.

Adam: Well, you shouldn’t worry about that. I mean, if jabot can survive you, it can probably survive just about anything.

[ Door opens ]

Jack: I just e-mailed legal to start drafting a contract, so that’s in the works.

Adam: Excellent.

Jack: In the meantime, i think maybe it’s time for you and I to have a celebratory drink. Billy, you’re more than welcome to join us.

Billy: I’d rather have a root canal.

Jack: Suit yourself. Shall we?

[ Elevator doors open ]

Nick: I know chance has some regrets about his decision to wrap things up.

Abby: It was a tough call. But I was hoping, once he made it, he’d be able to put the guilt behind him, but it’s still haunting him.

Nick: [ Sighs ] I really hate hearing that, abby.

Abby: He was so preoccupied at dominic’s birthday party, and when I asked him about it, he admitted that he was having a hard time with all of this. And I am trying so hard to be supportive. Chance is all about integrity, and that’s one of the things i admire most about him. But there is integrity in what he did and standing by his family. I see the value in family, where he sees it as a conflict of interest.

Nick: Did he, uh, say anything else?

Abby: No, not really. We were in the middle of hashing things out, but he got a call that he had a meeting with an informant from one of rey’s old cases, so he had to go, which was probably a good thing because things were getting pretty tense. It’s just so clear to me that he did the right thing by standing by his family. And every time I bring it up, every time I thank him for it, it just — it hits a nerve.

Nick: Yeah. Well, uh, maybe don’t mention it. You know, if it bothers him, just let it go.

Abby: I just — I don’t understand why he can’t see it the way that I do. Ashland’s death — it was a mistake. It was an accident. I mean, chance has admitted that himself. He has no qualms about it. So, dropping the case — that seems like the right thing to do. I mean, no one gets charged with a crime that happened in the heat of the moment. And it’s a win-win. But if chance keeps regretting it — I mean, even worse, if he re-opens the case — what does that mean for our father?

Nick: You know what? I’ll, uh — I’ll talk to chance, see if I can ease his mind.

Abby: No, nick, please. Please don’t pressure chance. It’s not gonna help.

Nick: No. I won’T.

Abby: Promise me?

Nick: I swear it, abby. Look, I get where you’re coming from. It was a big problem with phyllis and me because we had different feelings about my family. She really started resenting it when I showed any loyalty to them whatsoever, especially dad. But you and chance — you’ve got something real good here. Don’t let this come between you, okay?

Abby: That’s what I’m worried about.

Nick: It’s gonna be okay, alright?

Chance: Well, I hope I’m not making it seem like I got it all figured out because that is not the case.

Chelsea: What? You’re my guru now. The man with all the answers. Why did he say your book was coming out again?

Chance: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: No, but really, I’m impressed by how open you are about your struggles.

Chance: Well, thank you. I’ve been learning a lot about myself, I’ll tell you what, and what I’m capable of, good and bad.

Chelsea: Mm. And I’m glad I get to benefit from your therapy sessions. So, next round’s on me.

Allie: Okay. Then, uh… then you don’t mind talking about her?

Noah: [ Chuckles ] Hi, my name’s steve.

Noah: It’s not like I’m so devastated by the break-up that I can’t talk about it. I just — I don’t want to be that guy.

Allie: Trashing your ex, you mean?

Noah: Yeah. It’s not a good look.

Allie: Yeah. I respect that.

Noah: But you’re still curious.

Allie: I am. I — I feel like it’s one of those basic things you want to know in a new relationship, right? What happened in the previous one. How come you’re available to be scooped up?

Noah: Yeah. I get it.

Allie: Maybe you can just tell me how you felt. Why was it not working for you?

Noah: I guess I was just really confused a lot of the time. I could never predict how she would react to things.

Allie: I’m not sure I know what you mean. Like, things you gave her or things you said?

Noah: Yeah, conversation, mostly. You know, we’d talk about something one day and it would be perfectly fine. And then the next time I brought it up, I’d know that I made a mistake, but I wouldn’t know why. I’d have no idea how to fix it or if I should even try to.

Allie: Indirect communication.

Noah: Yeah. It drove me crazy. Instead of “what you see is what you get,” it turned into this giant guessing game, never really knowing where you stand.

Allie: That honestly sounds really exhausting.

Noah: No, it was good in the beginning. Then all of a sudden, we started getting these little — I don’t know — these little glitches. And I’d be like, “huh. What was that all about?” And it started happening more and more, and eventually it got so bad that I felt like I was walking on eggshells the whole time.

Allie: Did you love her?

Noah: I thought I did in the beginning. But now that I’ve had some time looking back on the relationship, I realize it was pretty toxic. It was one of those addictive ones that you can’t really handle, but you also can’t bring yourself to let it go. Know what I mean?

Allie: Actually, I — I do not. I have not dated that many guys. And the relationships that i have been in are mostly just awkward.

Noah: I have had those, too. No spark, no passion that really takes off.

Allie: Not like this one.

Noah: Let’s stop talking about the past. It’s not nearly as interesting as the future.

[ Indistinct conversation ]

Chance: Hey. I, uh — I got to get back to the station, but I just wanted to say it was nice chatting with you.

Chelsea: That meeting looked so mysterious. Was that about an investigation? Is that man an informant? Oh, come on. I know it’s none of my business, but I can’t help being curious.

Chance: It’s okay. What I can say is, as of today, I will have closed all of rey’s cases. Every single one of them. Made that commitment after he died, and, uh, well, it took me a little longer than I thought. But now I can tell my buddy i did it.

Chelsea: Wow. That’s amazing.

Chance: Hey. [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: That’s — sorry. It’s just — that’s such a special thing to do for rey. What a tribute to him.

Chance: Well, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Chelsea: I miss him.

Chance: I do, too.

Abby: For you.

Nick: What’s this?

Abby: Well, actually, they’re for christian. They’re the cuban shortbread cookies that he likes so much.

Nick: That is so sweet of you. I’ll let him know his aunt abby’s thinking about him.

Abby: Well, I should be thanking you for listening to all of my concerns. I know that you’re very busy these days.

Nick: Yeah. Vick has some seriously ambitious plans for newman enterprises. I’ve got a lot on my to-do list.

Abby: Uh, yes, I remember what it’s like working with our sister. Why do you think I like running my own business so much?

Nick: Well, no matter how busy I get, just know that I’m always here for you, abby. If you ever need me, day or night, just call.

Abby: Thank you. I hope it doesn’t come to that, though.

Jack: Hey. Hello, you two.

Abby: Uncle jack. Hi. Adam.

Adam: Good to see you both.

Jack: Uh, join us for a drink? Adam and I came by to raise a toast or two.

Nick: What are you celebrating?

Adam: My new job at jabot cosmetics. I’m going be jack’s co-ceo.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Abby: That is some news. Congratulations.

Adam: Oh, well, thank you. Pretty amped about it.

Jack: Yeah. Me too.

Abby: How long has this been in the works? I mean, you didn’t mention it the last time we spoke.

Nick: Or earlier today.

Jack: Well, it took me a while to talk your brother into seeing this as a good move. But now I look at it as an act of pure genius on my part.

Nick: How’s that, exactly?

Jack: Well, now the kyle has moved over to marchetti to run things there, it left me with a nationwide launch for an executive to replace him, and it turns out I already knew the person who was the right candidate.

Nick: Yeah, I know summer’s very excited to be working with her husband again.

Jack: Yeah, they are a great team. Anyway, I got used to having a right-hand man, and since adam was at loose ends, having resigned from newman, it seemed the timing was fortuitous.

Nick: Did you have this position in mind when we talked earlier?

Adam: Wasn’t even a glimmer on the horizon.

Jack: No, I actually sprung this offer on him a few days ago, and he turned me down flat.

Adam: Yes, yes, I was reluctant at first, but the more I thought about it, I realized this could be a beneficial move.

Abby: Beneficial for you?

Adam: Absolutely.

Abby: Mm.

Jack: And me and the company and anyone who works there. Jabot is lucky to have an executive of adam’s caliber.

Abby: No doubt.

Nick: You know, adam, you would have had a lot more autonomy if you stayed on as ceo of newman media.

Adam: Ohh. Does anybody really have autonomy working under victor newman?

Nick: When we talked earlier, you said you were looking to go in a different direction.

Jack: Well, I certainly think this qualifies, don’t you? Adam and I have been talking about breaking away from old patterns, and, uh, I think that’s a lot of what this is about.

Nick: Yeah, I don’t know, jack. To make a move like this, it seems like you’d be driven by a lot of rage and resentment, to give up what you had at newman media to take a lesser position at a different company. No offense, jack.

Jack: No offense taken. Newman media’s loss is my gain.

Allie: [ Laughing ]

Noah: Come here.

Traci: [ Clears throat ] Hi. Hi, guys. Hi.

[ Laughs ]

Allie: Traci. Hi.

Traci: Noah, it’s so nice to see you again so soon.

Noah: Yeah, you — you, too, trace. How’s it going?

Traci: Oh, it’s going really well. Thanks. I’ve been all over town. I ran a bunch of errands, and now I get to relax.

Noah: Sounds good. Well, uh, I should probably get going, so I’ll let you two get back to it.

Traci: Okay. Well, really, enjoy the rest of your day.

Noah: You too. Thank you.

Traci: Okay.

[ Chuckles ]

Allie: Okay.

[ Laughing ] We were so not subtle. How embarrassing.

Traci: No. Oh, my gosh, allie, no. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, if you had read any of my novels, you would know it’s gonna take a lot more than that to make me blush.

[ Both laugh ]

Chance: Thank you.

Sharon: Of course.

Chance: Hey, do you — do you have a minute to talk?

Sharon: Sure. What’s going on?

Chance: Oh, I just wanted to come by and tell you that i filed the last report on that list. So, as of today, I have closed all of rey’s cases that he was working on before he died. There’s no unfinished business.

Sharon: Wow. Thank you. I know that would have meant a lot to rey.

Chance: And I know I’ve said this a lot, but it was an honor to work with your husband and to finish what he started. And I know these words are thrown around, but he was truly an inspiration and a role model for me and for a lot of others.

Sharon: You know, I can tell you rey felt the same way about you. He had a lot of respect for you. And he was so happy to be working with someone as honorable as you are, chance. (Assad) since my mother

Traci: Okay. I thought that we could use a little something to nosh on, you know, after all the strenuous activities of the day.

Allie: Oh, my god. You are killing me.

Traci: What? I was talking about me running all over town, doing my errands. What did you think I was talking — [ Gasps ] Oh!

Allie: You have a real wicked streak, you know that?

Traci: [ Laughs ] I do. I really do. I kind of keep it hidden, you know, to surprise people. It’s more fun that way.

[ Both laugh ]

Allie: [ Sighs ]

Traci: Ah, and speaking of fun, you and noah — you’re just adorable together. I love seeing that your friendship is turning into something more, and I can see how much you care about him.

Allie: I really do. God, it’s — it’s ridiculous how happy I am right now. I cannot stop smiling.

Traci: I see nothing ridiculous about that.

Allie: I don’t know. I guess — I guess there’s just a part of me that wonders if this is too good to be true. It’s ’cause I’m still in that infatuation stage now.

Traci: Allie, that’s the best part.

Allie: Is it, though, traci? Or am I really just setting myself up to get really hurt? I don’t know. Maybe the smart thing to do would be to rein myself in and be more cautious, you know?

Traci: What? [ Laughs ] I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy every single minute of this. Because you’re right — this is a phase. It’s the height of the happy, giddy feelings. You know, some couples, the really lucky ones, find a way to make this last for a lifetime, but for most people, this just moves into something deeper. That’s all the more reason that you need to really enjoy the here and now.

Allie: That is a great point.

Traci: You have had a really difficult year. You lost your dad. You had to sell your family home and move across the country to live with a family you never even knew you had. I mean, this is a lot for anyone to handle. So, how wonderful that life has balanced it out for you with butterflies in the stomach and long talks with a man who finds you fascinating. You know, finding yourself alone, just smiling because that handsome someone crossed your mind.

Allie: Traci, I — I care so much for noah. You know, I feel so safe with him, but it’s never boring. And I have never experienced anything like this before.

Traci: Then my advice for you is — enjoy it for what it is. Maybe leave a little room for what it might become. And, honey, do not talk yourself out of experiencing something rapturous in the name of caution.

Allie: “Rapturous”?

[ Both laugh ] You are such a writer.

Traci: Okay, you’re not gonna joke your way out of this conversation, young lady.

Allie: No. You’re right. I’m sorry. It’s such a bad habit of mine. But I promise I — I have heard every word and gotten the message. I need to give myself permission to be happy.

Sharon: One of the first things that I noticed about rey when I was working with him at the police station as a victim’s advocate is he had this thing for very sharp pencils.

Chance: [ Chuckles ]

Sharon: I would come into work in the morning, 7:00 A.M., And there he’d be with the pencil sharpener.

Chance: Yeah, his morning routine. I know. It was ridiculous.

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: Hi.

Chance: How you doing, nick?

Nick: Good. Uh, I was looking for you. I was hoping to talk to you for a minute.

Sharon: Oh, well, that’s fine with me. Um, thanks for coming by to tell me what you did. It meant the world.

Chance: Absolutely. You’re welcome.

Nick: Thank you, sharon.

Chance: What’s going on?

Nick: I have some news. Um, I was with victoria and dad. Then adam showed up.

Chance: Full of threats to expose us, I’m assuming?

Nick: Actually, just the opposite. Seems like he’s had a change of heart.

Chance: Just like that? I guess he’s no longer gonna hold the investigation over our heads.

Chance: Where is this coming from, do you think? What’s his agenda?

Nick: I don’t know. Like you, I didn’t want to believe a word out of his mouth, but then he told me that he accepted a job to be jack’s co-ceo of jabot.

Chance: You’re kidding.

Nick: No. Jack has always had a positive influence on adam. Adam really looks up to him and respects him. You know, the two of them were very excited to be embarking on this journey together. So, maybe adam’s sincere and he’s looking for another chance to get a reset.

Chance: [ Sighs ] Oh, man, I really hope that’s the case. All this is starting to get to me a little bit.

Nick: Yeah. I talked to abby. Didn’t seem like she knew anything about adam’s vendetta.

Chance: No, I didn’t see the point of stressing her out unnecessarily.

Nick: Yeah, I can understand why you wanted to keep that information to yourself, but it has unfortunately backfired.

Chance: What now?

Nick: Look, abby could tell something was bothering me. She’s starting to fill in the blanks on her own. She’s very concerned about you, chance, and what’s gonna happen to you, if you’re gonna be able to live with your decision of closing the case. On the other hand, she’s also worried about her father and what’s gonna happen to him if you change your mind and go after him again. You need to talk to abby, chance.

Chance: [ Sighs ] Alright. Thanks for the heads-up.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

[ Door opens ]

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

[ Door closes ]

[ Sniffles ]

[ Gasps lightly ]

[ Sobbing ] (Vo) start the day with cheerios oat crunch almond.

Traci: [ Clears throat ] Honey, I hope that you won’t think I’m prying.

Allie: No. Ask me anything.

Traci: Have you had some bad relationships? Is that why you’re nervous?

Allie: I have not dated that many guys. And the guys that I have dated — for the most part, the relationships have all kind of just been duds.

Traci: Ohh.

Allie: [ Chuckling ] Yeah. Nowhere near as dramatic as it sounds like noah’s has been.

Traci: Well, I have known noah since the day he was born, and he is an amazing young man. So, if you have any concerns, I can vouch for him.

Allie: No, no. That was also the impression that I’ve gotten. But it is great to hear from you, too.

Traci: Good. Cheers.

Allie: Cheers.

[ Both laugh ]

Noah: Hey, guys. I am dying for an iced coffee. Do you mind?

Sharon: Not at all.

Noah: Anyone else want one? Dad?

Nick: No. I’m good. Thanks.

Sharon: You certainly are in a good mood.

Nick: Yeah. What’s that about?

Noah: I don’t know. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I’m falling in love.

Abby: Chance?

Chance: Hey.

Abby: Hey.

Chance: I am so sorry for the way I spoke to you earlier and for leaving like that. And I want you to know there’s nothing more important than you and dominic and our family. And I will do everything I can not lose sight of that again.

Abby: Apology accepted.

Jack: Your contract should be on my desk by now. Hmm. Or maybe not.

Adam: Oh. Bummer.

Jack: You know what? Let me go down to legal, see what’s holding it up. You’re welcome to stay here if you like.

Adam: Yeah. Yeah, sure thing. Hmm.

Adam: Well, thank you for the coffee. What did I do to deserve this?

Chelsea: You set me straight about my short-lived podcast career, and you even managed to cheer me up a little bit.

Adam: Oh, wow. I think I’m the one who should be thanking you, though. You were the one who made me reconsider how to handle my father and made me realize that I should give more thought to jack’s offer.

Chelsea: Well, I was glad to steer you in the right direction.

Sally: Hi, guys. How are you? It’s like a newman fashion reunion. Remember those days? Good times.

Chelsea: Good times? I think we have a different recollection of that experience.

Sally: Of course, you moved on to bigger and better things with those excellent podcasts. Riveting. You and billy have great chemistry. It sounds like you’re having a lot of fun.

Chelsea: Thanks. I think.

Sally: Mm-hmm. You must be thrilled to have found this new calling.

Adam: Sally… what’s going on?

Sally: [ Scoffs ]

[ Knock on door ]

Nick: Hey.

Victoria: Hey. Gosh, I’m glad you’re here. We need to strategize.

Nick: About what?

Victoria: Well, we need to figure out a way to deal with adam. Sally just told me about adam’s attempt to get her to publish this article about dad’s covering up ashland’s death. And I’m just sitting here trying to figure out a way to stop him.

Nick: Dad and I just ran into adam at society. He’s definitely on the warpath. He’s planning to use the police report to — I don’t know — seek justice.

Victoria: We need to stop him. I mean, obviously, sally refused to publish the article, but there are other media outlets that would be happy to drag the newman name through the mud.

Nick: What are you thinking?

Victoria: You know, I don’t have the details worked out yet, but I do believe that sally is the key to this.

Nick: How so?

Victoria: We buy ourselves some time. We — we tell her to let adam know that she’s gonna publish the article, make him believe that she’s on his side.

Nick: So, you want to use sally as a pawn. Absolutely not, vick.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

[ Laughter ]

Tessa: Dominic loves the bubbles.

Mariah: Who knew? A little bit of water and some dish soap. We could have saved hundreds on presents.

Devon: Yeah.

Chance: I think the invitation said no presents.

Mariah: No one ever believes that, especially with daddy warbucks on the guest list.

Devon: I don’t know what you’re talking about. I restrained myself.

Mariah: This is restraint?

Devon: Yes, this is, actually.

Abby: Well, you are gonna love the theme of today’s party. It’s gonna mean a lot to dominic, and it cost absolutely nothing.

Tessa: Ooh. What is it?

Abby: We are gonna make a time capsule of dominic’s first year. Everyone’s gonna write a couple notes, and I am gonna seal them in this box. And when dominic turns 18 and he graduates from high school, he’ll open it.

Devon: That’s a really, really great idea, abby.

Mariah: Yeah, we are definitely stealing that for our future kid’s birthday.

Tessa: [ Laughs ]

Abby: Alright, so, everyone, just write a couple sentences of what your best memory of dominic’s first year was. I want him to know how loved and supported he was since day one. For you I wish many things…

Tessa: What? We’re gonna read it in, like, two seconds.

Mariah: [ Laughs ]

Abby: Alright, is everyone done? Should we read them?

Mariah: Uh, okay. I will go first.

Abby: I knew you would.

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: “Dear dominic, I will always remember when my pregnancy test was positive. We had no idea how cute and fun you would be then, but that was just the start. Love you, mariah.”

Tessa: Aww!

Abby: That’s so sweet.

Tessa: Okay, well, I’ll go next. Um, “dearest dom, I remember the first time I saw you. It was an ultrasound. You were so tiny, but it was clear to anyone who saw that image you were super cool. Love, tessa.”

Mariah: You know, we should have visuals in the time capsule, you know, like the sonogram or maybe other photos.

Abby: Yes. I love that idea. I’ll make that happen.

Devon: That would be really cool. I’ll go next. “Dominic, the day you were born was exciting and nerve-wracking and exhilarating, but at the end of the day, I was thrilled to be helping bring you into the world, little man.”

[ Laughter ] “You were immediately loved by everyone. Love, devon.”

Mariah: I love how you didn’t include the part about the psycho that kidnapped me. It was very — very sensitive. Thank you. I appreciate that.

Devon: No problem, no problem.

Tessa: What did you write, abby?

Abby: I wrote, “my dearest son, I can tell you that my favorite day of your first year was when your father came home from overseas and got to meet you for the first time.”

Chance: That’s my favorite, too.

Abby: Yeah. Yeah?

Victoria: Why are you opposed to asking sally to go along with my plan?

Nick: I don’t think it’s fair to enlist her in a newman family fight. Vick, I had a heart-to-heart talk with her earlier. She has been nothing but loyal to the family and the company.

Victoria: You’re right. You’re right. She’s shown that she’s on our side.

Nick: Then let’s keep her out of it. We will reward her for informing us what adam was up to. Plus, she’s still dealing with her heartache from her breakup with adam. It’ll just get messy and complicated.

Victoria: The goal is to protect you and dad, so we have to keep the cover-up and the fact that you delivered the punch that killed ashland — we have to keep that from becoming public knowledge.

Nick: I don’t need protecting, okay? That’s what got us here in the first place. All this talk about protecting me — it’s making me start to understand adam.

Chelsea: As much as I love being praised for my podcast, this seems suspicious.

Sally: Nothing is going on. Just a little thing called being polite. Unless that’s a foreign concept to both of you. I will just leave you to your chat.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Sorry about that.

Chelsea: Mnh, I can take it. She doesn’t scare me.

Adam: Forgot how tough you can be.

Chelsea: Well, thanks for the advice.

Adam: Am I being dismissed?

Chelsea: No. I just thought you’d want to get in touch with jack, you know, about what we talked about.

Adam: You’re right. I should get going. Thank you for the talk in the park. Gave me a lot to think about. Okay.

Chelsea: Bye.

Adam: Bye.

[ Door opens and closes ]

Sally: Well, you certainly didn’t waste any time. Ughh!

Chelsea: You’re acting jealous and possessive. You’re obviously very sad that adam no longer looks at you with affection. Clearly, what you guys had was based on lust. It’s obvious by how quickly it’s crashed and burned.

Sally: What adam and I had was very special.

Chelsea: Oh, I’m sure it was…to you. And now you’re having a really hard time accepting that it’s over and you’re lashing out to the people around you and I’m the closest target.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] The truth is —

Chelsea: The truth is, what adam and I have has lasted for years, and we have a child together. You don’t get to just drop in and say whatever you want anytime you see the two of us together. We are finally in a great place. We can sit together, have a normal conversation like normal people, and I am not gonna let you get in the middle of that. So, whatever’s going on between adam and me, friendship or otherwise, it’s not really any of your business.

[ Door opens ]

Sharon: It’s hard to let go of him, isn’t it?

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Devon: He loves it.

Abby: Mmm! [ Chuckles ]

Tessa: So, what did you write?

Mariah: I wished for him to find unconditional love.

Tessa: Ooh!

Mariah: And you?

Tessa: Well, I wrote that i hope he finds his passion, the thing that he wants to do with his life, and that we would be there to support him in every way.

Mariah: I also addressed it to “bowie.” Do you think that’s gonna make any sense in the future?

Tessa: Yeah. I think so.

Mariah: Okay. Let’s go home.

Tessa: Okay.

Devon: Vroom, vroom, vroom!

Abby: Oh, are you two leaving?

Mariah: Yeah. Sorry, guys, but we have to get the new face of marchetti to, well, marchetti.

[ Laughter ]

Chance: Well, good luck, tessa. We know you you’ll crush it.

Tessa: Thank you.

Abby: You’re gonna do great, and we’re so excited for you.

Devon: Here you go. Yeah.

Devon: We all can’t wait for that ad campaign, but I know your fans are looking forward to you fully recovering so you can get back to doing what you do best.

[ Chuckles ] Well, um, you were pretty quiet this afternoon. Did you think my time capsule idea was silly? I — I just thought it was a fun way for all of us to come together for dominic, but did it make you think about all the time you missed with him, or is something else bothering you?

Victoria: What do you mean, you understand adam? What are you talking about?

Nick: I can appreciate his frustrations with dad and his constant interfering, how he gets under his skin, how he has to fight the urge to constantly teach him a lesson.

Victoria: I’m so sick and tired of adam lashing out every time his little ego gets bruised. He just takes things too personally. It makes him look weak. It’s why I think, ultimately, he’ll never succeed at business.

Nick: I’m not defending him, vick, okay? I’m not. But I understand what is motivating him. I mean, look at me. I didn’t want dad’s help. I didn’t want it. But it was forced upon me, and you’ve been in the same position.

Victoria: We are nothing like adam. Don’t you even insinuate that this would unite us against dad.

Nick: That’s not what this is, okay? And as frustrated as I am with dad, I will handle things very differently than adam. I’m not saying I agree with what adam’s doing, but I get it. It’s just too bad that he’s regressed because I was starting to be, you know, cool with the new adam.

Victoria: The new adam is a fairy tale. I never bought his so-called transformation, and clearly he’s up to his old tricks. He’s trying to publish slander about our father.

Nick: It’s not slander, vick, if it’s true. Dad was behind a cover-up.

Victoria: A cover-up of an accident. So there was nothing to actually hide. Look, chance made his decision, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s over.

Victor: That’s right. It is over. Okay?

Victoria: How long have you been standing there?

Victor: Long enough. Happy to see the two of you working together, and you, son, are finally back where you belong. And as far as threats are concerned from adam, don’t you worry about it. I’ll take care of it. I have taken care of bigger things than that, alright? Now, I suggest we celebrate, celebrate that we put this dreadful chapter behind us. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Sally: It’s just so humiliating, getting dressed down by chelsea.

Sharon: Well, she’s very good at pushing people’s buttons.

Sally: Yeah. Especially mine.

Sharon: But is it chelsea or adam who has you triggered?

Sally: I’m trying to let go of him.

Sharon: I know the feeling.

Sally: It’s so hard.

Sharon: But it can be done. I’m proof of that.

Sally: I thought I was through the worst of it. Adam finally admitted that he broke up with me to ensure that I kept my job. And even though I pushed him to tell me the truth, it did not feel any better hearing it. It just made the wound raw again, to know for sure that he was willing to purposefully hurt me like that in some misguided attempt to protect me.

Sharon: Well, that’s an unfortunate newman trait.

Sally: He just caused me too much pain, and there was no going back, you know, after he made it clear to me that he didn’t trust me enough to bring me with him on his new path.

Sharon: What new path?

Sally: He’s out to get his father.

Sharon: Again?

Sally: [ Scoffs ] Yeah. It seems that there’s no escaping his love/hate cycle with victor.

Sharon: Did you ever consider that him telling you that he doesn’t trust you is just, um… it’s another way of protecting you. I’m sure adam didn’t want you to get caught in victor’s cross hairs.

Sally: Do you really think that’s a possibility?

Sharon: Yeah. The, you know, father/son battles in the past have been, you know, pretty nasty. And I can’t imagine adam would want you involved.

Sally: Yeah. I mean, maybe. Maybe he is looking out for me. But it doesn’t matter because I’ve realized that there is no way for adam and me to move our relationship past his daddy issues. I know you warned me about that before and I didn’t listen. But I finally get it now. Victor will always be adam’s primary relationship.

Adam: Hey, jack, it’s me. Um, we should talk. I’ve been reconsidering your offer. It’s interesting. So, call me back.

[ Glasses clinking ]

Victor: To the future of newman enterprises.

Victoria: The future. The future is very bright. And like I said on the video call, the company is on track to be stronger than ever — and not because ashland is gone, but because nicholas has joined us, which is very reassuring. And it’s also very exciting. It’s very good for the family and very good for the company. To the newmans, together.

[ Glasses clinking ]

Nick: Alright.

Victor: I got to tell you, after the video conference, the various division heads felt very confident now that the company is in the hands of my family, your mother, in your hands, and in your hands, okay? I love that. My family running newman enterprises. Let’s drink to that again.

Nick: Alright.

[ Glasses clinking ] And let us drink to the fact that ashland locke is now part of history, okay?

Victoria: I suggest that we never say his name again and pretend like he never even existed.

Victor: Exactly.

Chance: Abby, I’m not upset about lost time with dominic. That’s not it.

Abby: So, you weren’t hurt by the reminder that you weren’t here when dominic was born?

Chance: No, abby. Look, I’ve — I’ve done enough work in therapy where I’m past the point of getting upset about that. I really enjoyed having a picnic with you and our baby boy and all of our good friends. And I really enjoy creating these memories as a family. I promise.

Abby: Okay. Then why were you so quiet all afternoon?

Chance: [ Sighs ] I, um… I just got some things on my mind, you know? I don’t want to get into it right now, not on his birthday.

Abby: Chance, please. Just tell me. I want to know what’s going on inside your head.

Chance: No, you’re right. I should — I should be honest with you.

[ Chuckles ] I’m just still worried about shutting down this investigation into ashland’s death. That’s it.

Abby: Oh. I thought you had put that to bed when you closed the case.

Chance: Well, it’s, uh, not that simple. I had some loose ends to take care of, and, uh…well, I might have filed the report, but i just can’t stop thinking about it.

Abby: Chance, you have to stop second-guessing yourself.

Chance: Abby, I realize that. I’m just trying to reconcile the decision I made here.

Abby: And you made the right one. My family is very grateful.

Chance: Okay, look, I want to talk to you about this. I really do. But you were just so sure that i did nothing wrong.

Abby: Of course you didn’T. Because I know you.

Chance: Abby, you don’t understand. If I can’t talk to you about it, who the hell am I supposed to talk to? I mean, I can’t go around town saying, “well, my father-in-law committed a crime, and I’m having trouble letting it go.”

[ Sfx: Cricket mnemonic] People who come to cricket,

Abby: Chance [Sighs] Look at what this is doing to you — to us. I never meant to influence you. Yes, the newmans are my family, but they’re your family, too. And I’m sorry. I mean, are you having second thoughts?

Chance: Just don’t worry about it, okay? It’s all good.

[ Cellphone vibrating ] I’m sorry. Give me a second. Yeah?

Abby: Hello. Hello.

Chance: Okay. I’ll be right there. Okay. I have to go.

Abby: Where are you going?

Chance: I have to meet an informant about rey’s open cases. Once I wrap this one up, I’ll be done. That’ll be his entire caseload.

Abby: Well, that’s great, but do you have to do it right now, I mean, in the middle of this important conversation? Can’t someone else cover for you?

Chance: It has to be me, abby. He was my partner. I have to see this through.

Abby: Okay, well, can you just promise me that when the cases are closed that maybe we could just get away for a little bit, just the three of us? You know, even if it’s just for a long weekend. We need this. Our family needs this.

Chance: I’ll think about it. Bye. I love you. Happy birthday. [ Smooches ]

Adam: Well, isn’t this cozy? Or, at the very least, efficient. I can address you all.

Victor: Son. Why don’t you sit down and join us for a drink?

Adam: Oh, that won’t be necessary. Matter of fact, andy, can you bring their check to me? I would like to pick up their tab today.

Victor: That is not necessary, okay?

Adam: Well, just to show you that there are no hard feelings on my part.

Victoria: What are you up to, adam? Why do you feel the need to drag the family into another fight?

Adam: I just bought you lunch and a very expensive bottle of champagne. That’s not a combative gesture, victoria.

Nick: You sure you’re not looking for a battle?

Adam: Not at all. Had an epiphany about my life with the help of someone that’s very close to me, and I’m not coming after the family. No revenge. Not going down that road again. I want to focus on my own life, and that means not falling into old traps, usually set by our father. So, enjoy yourselves.

Victoria: I’m sorry, but I’m not buying it. Why would he go to all of the trouble to get his hands on that police report if he wasn’t gonna use it to his advantage? What do you think, nick?

Victor: Don’t you worry about a thing, okay? I will deal with him.

Abby: Did you have fun, dominic? I know I did for a while. Oh. [ Chuckles ] Sleeping. I will get you home soon.

[ Sighs ] You only turn one once, dominic. And I cannot wait for you to graduate high school and open this box with all of these special notes from our special family, all of these people that love you so much.

Devon: Hey. Glad you’re still here.

Abby: Hey. What’s wrong?

Devon: I forgot that — oh — I was having my little buddy watch my tablet for me.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: You alright?

Abby: Yeah. Yeah. I’m just a little emotional. Well, can’t believe dominic’s turning one.

Devon: I know. It’s a big milestone.

Abby: Time flies.

Devon: It sure does. Are you really okay, though?

Abby: I can’t fool you.

Devon: No, you can’T. Why don’t you talk to me?

Abby: [ Sighs ] I guess I was just expecting this day to go differently than it did.

Devon: I thought everybody had a really great time.

Abby: Yeah, yeah, we did. It’s just, after everyone left, I was hoping to have some time with chance, you know, just the three of us, but he got called away on a case.

Devon: Oh. I see. I mean, that’s a part of his job. You know that.

Abby: Yeah. Yeah. It’s — it’s not just that, though. It’s the way that he’s been viewing his cases lately. It’s all he can think about, all he talks about. And there’s this one investigation that wasn’t as cut and dried as he likes and… I know I’m gonna sound like a terrible person, but, I mean, if work is consuming you like that, I mean, isn’t it something wrong? Doesn’t that mean that something’s off? I mean, for me, family is first always. I mean our family, with dominic.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: It was just how I grew up with my mom’s family and my dad’S.

Devon: No, I completely understand. Neil instilled the same thing in me, you know? And I miss him every day for it. But do you really think that chance doesn’t feel the same way about family as you do? ‘Cause he — he’s crazy about you guys.

Abby: I know. And he has put us first in some recent situations. But there are other times…

Devon: Yeah. Well, honestly, abby, I think that chance is just built differently. Like, of course, family is important to him, but his sense of right and wrong and his commitment to his job is such a big part of who he is. Standing up for what he believes is right and holding people accountable when they break the law — it might be right up there with family for him. And that’s just something that you have to understand and remember that, even though his priorities might shift from day to day, they’re both still there.

Abby: Thank you for saying that.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: But, you know, I was taught that family is first and everything else comes second. So sometimes it’s hard for me to understand.

Devon: I know exactly what you mean ’cause you grew up with victor newman as a father.

Abby: Dad always puts family first, sometimes at the expense of everything else.

Devon: Well, chance isn’t like your father.

Abby: He definitely isn’T.

Devon: But I know that he loves you and he loves dominic. And I guarantee you that you two are his first priority, as you should be.

Abby: Thank you.

Without the right start

Sharon: I thought your relationship with adam could survive his conflict with his father.

Sally: So did I.

Sharon: But now he’s alone again, looking to fight victor.

Sally: I’m alone again, too. I’ve never really been a fan of that.

[ Chuckles ] I mean, how do you handle it? The loneliness. Oh, my god. I’m sorry. I — I just blurt things out sometimes. I did not mean to be insensitive. I just know that you — you recently lost rey.

Sharon: No. That’s okay. I don’t mind talking about it. But you know there is a difference between being alone and being lonely. Yeah, I may not be in a romantic relationship, but I am surrounded by people who I love the most in the world.

Sally: That’s wonderful.

Sharon: Yeah, it is. And surviving cancer made me feel differently about being alone.

Sally: How so?

Sharon: Well, I, um, want to make the most out of every day. I don’t want to waste any of my time. I certainly don’t want to waste time feeling sorry for myself. And I don’t mind spending time by myself. I actually cherish it.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] I love that outlook. Maybe one day I will get there.

Sharon: Yeah, well, I’ve also realized that life can change in an instant, and that might make one feel a little worried, but the people I’m surrounded by — they make me feel safe.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Like nick.

Sharon: Yeah. He is one of those people.

Sally: I mean, he always just seems so supportive of you. It must be a really big help not having an ex who’s an enemy.

Sharon: Well, um, you know, it hasn’t all been rosy, but i know that nick is a good man and I know how lucky I am to have him in my life.

Nick: Hey.

Adam: Dad and victoria abandon you?

Nick: There’s a lot to do at the office.

Adam: I’m sure.

Nick: So, is this epiphany of yours for real?

Adam: That’s right. I had a vision for how I want my life to go, and it did not involve wreaking havoc at newman enterprises.

Nick: What happened? Why the abrupt shift?

Adam: I had a conversation with someone who enlightened me and convinced me that I was going down the wrong path.

Nick: So, we’re just supposed to take your word for it that you’re not gonna be a threat?

Adam: Look, you all are gonna believe whatever you want to believe, okay? But I do want to say one thing to you, nick — that none of my anger and issues are with you. You’ve been nothing but fair and honest since faith’s accident, and this all has to do with dad as far as I’m concerned.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Look, here’s the problem, adam. If you change your mind — and we both know there’s a very strong possibility that happens — and you weaponize what you know about ashland’s death against us, then I do get hurt.

Adam: Look, I think you should worry less about me and more about the people in your camp.

Nick: What does that mean?

Adam: Come on. Now that you’re back into the fold, one wrong move and dad is gonna turn on you, too.

Nick: You think I don’t know what dad’s capable of? Look, I don’t like the way he handled things that night.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You mean the night that you killed ashland locke?

Nick: That was an accident.

Adam: Of course it was an accident.

Nick: You weren’t there, alright? You don’t know how much danger vick was in and why I had to jump in.

Adam: Look, I do believe that you had no choice. And believe it or not, I am glad that you were there to protect victoria.

Nick: It also shows how much dad loves us and how far he will go for us, which includes you, adam. I wish you could drop some of your resentment towards him.

Adam: So do I. So do I. But I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen.

Nick: [ Scoffs ] I mean, for you to even think about using what dad did to protect his children against him is pretty low, especially when you think about how many times in the past you have needed the police to look the other way for something you did.

Adam: Would you stop? I told you, I’m backing off. I swear to you that I want to find a new path.

Nick: I really hope that’s true.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone pings ]

Billy: Maybe because with goodbyes there is a sense of loss. But there’s also room for new beginnings.

[ Cellphone thuds ]

Chelsea: [ Breathes deeply ]

[ Sighs ] Connor. Hey, how are you? No, no. I know. I was just missing you. Not flossing well?

Sharon: So, was this just a meeting, or did they take pictures?

Tessa: Just a few test photos.

Mariah: But the first ad shoot is coming up very soon now. And you should see the clothes that she gets to wear.

[ Laughs ]

Sharon: That is so exciting.

Tessa: Yeah, it’s gonna be a lot more fun than I thought.

Mariah: And you haven’t even heard about the best part of the day.

Sharon: Best part? You mean there’s more?

Mariah: We got to go to dominic’s first birthday party, and he was so amazing.

Tessa: And it made us realize…

Mariah: We don’t want to wait any longer.

Tessa: We’re gonna dive back into the adoption process.

Sharon: Wow. That is such great news. I am so excited for both of you. I can’t wait for your next chapter.

Tessa: [ Laughs ]

Victoria: Oh, gosh, I think i have too much of a champagne buzz to go over those fourth-quarter projections.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] Well, I’ll admit to you — and only to you — that once or twice I had maybe one tequila too many when I looked at the books and made a deal. You know what I’m saying?

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

[ Sighs ] You know, dad, I don’t think i told you how grateful I am for what you did for us that night. You were looking out for me and nicholas. You risked — you risked a lot to protect us, and I just appreciate it so much. Thank you. I’ll never forget it. Mm. I love you.

Victoria: I adore you, okay? I wish your brothers felt the same, you know?

Victoria: Oh, daddy. I think that deep down in nick’s heart, he does.

Victor: Mm.

Victoria: Adam, on the other hand — I have no idea what’s going through his head.

Victoria: I don’t ever want you to worry about that. I will do whatever I can to protect my family, even if that means to protect you from one of our own.

Adam: Well, just remember this. As much as dad’s instinct was to protect us by covering up A.J. Montalvo and locke’s deaths, what he did prevented us from processing the consequences of our actions. They both were accidents. They both were self-defense, yes. But you and I — we never had to publicly face what happened. Dad covered it all up, made it look like we weren’t even there. I don’t know about you, but for me, that meant I had to bury all these feelings about killing a man in the deepest part of my psyche.

Nick: You were just a kid.

Adam: Mm-hmm. And someone was looking out for me — my father. You know, he thought he was helping, but he was actually doing the opposite. What he was essentially saying is, “you did something wrong. I fixed it. Forget about it. Move on with your life.” But taking a man’s life is not easy to forget, nick. The problem is, the more you push those memories away, the more that they come back. I suppressed what I did in kansas for a long time, and it turned me into who I am today. Is that what you want, nick?

Chloe: Thanks for meeting with us, nick, and we’re really excited to pitch you some of our ideas.

Nick: Yeah. Let’s — let’s see what you got.

Chloe: Okay. So last week we really started strategizing on how to create more synergy between the newman media divisions, mostly within the entertainment sector. And we’re also wondering if we might be able to converge entertainment and news by producing some topical talk shows that check both of those boxes.

Sally: We want to go big, and our entertainment- and news-oriented divisions are doing really well nationally, so we were thinking that it might be time to focus on expanding to an international audience.

Chloe: Yeah, and that would mean creating content targeting those markets — europe, asia, and south america.

Sally: And if you like any of these general ideas, we can always come back with a more detailed plan on how to execute them.

Chloe: Yeah, we know that it’s a bold direction, but we really believe in it. So what do you think?

Chelsea: Hey.

Adam: Hi.

Chelsea: I guess you handled whatever that text message was earlier that sent you off and running without explanation.

Adam: Yeah, it actually turned out to be good news. Something that I was hoping for finally paid off.

Chelsea: Huh.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Chelsea: Well, it’s great when life takes a turn like that.

Adam: Yeah, it sure is.

Chelsea: Okay. I’m too tired to keep this up.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Same.

Chelsea: Alright, let’s just come clean. Who wants to go first?

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Jack: [ Humming ]

Traci: What has gotten into you?

Jack: What do you mean?

Traci: [ Chuckles ] You’re so happy.

Jack: Well, I’d like to think it’s not that rare or shocking that I have a smile on my face.

Traci: It’s not, but you’re smiling a lot more lately.

Jack: I didn’t know you were counting smiles.

Traci: And you are humming when you’re going through the mail.

Jack: I didn’t do that.

Traci: You did. And if I’m not mistaken, I overheard you singing with harrison.

Jack: That I will cop to. That kid can turn anyone’s mood around.

Traci: [ Chuckles ] So is it your grandson that’s got you so chipper, or is it something or someone else?

Diane: Hello, nikki.

Nikki: How are you, diane?

Diane: I’m — I’m fine. Thank you.

Nikki: Glad to hear it.

Diane: And you?

Nikki: I’m well. Keeping busy at newman enterprises. I spoke with summer recently. She says you’re doing a wonderful job at marchetti so far.

Diane: Is that right? Well, that’S…nice to hear.

[ Scoffs ] Is there a hidden pie about to smack me in the face or should I brace myself for something worse?

Talia: Phyllis.

Phyllis: Hey.

Talia: You neglected to tell me you own the place.

Phyllis: Oh, yes.

Talia: I’m impressed.

Phyllis: Hmm. I’m glad you’re enjoying your time here. Yeah, the grand phoenix, it was a labor of love, you know? Ah, there were a lot of ups and downs, but totally worth it. It’s coming to an end, I’m afraid. I just sold it.

Talia: Interesting.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Talia: You’re moving on. Why is that?

Phyllis: Well, I work at marchetti now.

Talia: Where diane jenkins works? Not a coincidence, I’m guessing. Is there an agenda there?

Sally: Is there a problem with our pitches that you didn’t want to mention in front of chloe?

Nick: No. I loved them, each and every one of them. I meant what I said. This is about you and adam.

Chelsea: So we agreed to tell each other what’s going on.

Adam: We did.

Chelsea: Go ahead.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Ladies first.

Chelsea: Oh, oldest trick in the book. The first one to spill is always put at a disadvantage.

Adam: Are we taking advantage of each other now?

Chelsea: No. I guess we’re on neutral ground. God, you are so stubborn, you know that?

Adam: So I have been told.

Chelsea: Fine. I’ll go. I just recorded my final podcast episode with billy.

Adam: Ah. So a celebration is in order now that you dropped the dead weight?

Chelsea: I’m not continuing the podcast.

Adam: You didn’t take my suggestion that you should bring in a new co-host and someone who’s not a royal jerk?

Chelsea: Billy — who’s not a jerk, by the way — suggested the same thing. He even offered to help me find a new co-host.

Adam: Well, you are obviously so talented that even billy abbott can see it and he stands to make money from it. Doesn’t mean he’s not a jerk.

Chelsea: Well, I decided against it. This isn’t about billy. It’s about me.

Adam: Okay. Sorry. So, in other words, your career is in limbo.

Chelsea: Yeah. I just don’t understand why I can’t find something that I’m able to handle. Find something that doesn’t get yanked away from me before I settle in. You know, working for a global fashion icon like angelina marchetti was probably too much for me. I dove back into the fashion world too soon, but then I found something that excited me. Something that grounded me with this podcast. And then billy, he just quits on me.

Adam: Yeah, I can — I can relate. I mean, I feel like I had the perfect future at newman dangled in front of me more times than I can count, only to be yanked away. And frankly, I’m just — I’m exhausted.

Chelsea: Mm, I know you better than that. You may be tired at the moment, but you’re not defeated. And I’ve seen this before.

Adam: Seen what?

Chelsea: The look in your eye, the iciness in your tone. That’s pure rage.

Traci: You know, if you were a character in one of my novels, my editor would be insisting that I explain your mood.

Jack: I am not a character in one of your novels. I am your brother. And my moods don’t have to be explained or scrutinized or novelized for that point.

Traci: Come on, you would make a great character — leading man, romantic hero.

Jack: Don’t even think about it.

Traci: And you’re avoiding my original question.

Jack: Oh, I know what you’re fishing for, and I’m not biting.

Traci: Alright. Can’t blame a girl for trying.

Jack: You know what? I am thrilled that kyle and summer and harrison are back in town, great, exciting new things are happening at jabot, and my family is mercifully at peace. Does that perhaps satisfy your curiosity?

Traci: [ Chuckles ] Nobody would have believed that peaceful part of this a few months ago when diane first got in touch with you.

Jack: No, that’s true. Not long ago, I thought diane was only capable of causing trouble. But you know what? Kyle is healing. I can’t even believe I’m saying that, but it’s true. And for that, I am very grateful.

Jack: Is this you in the process of forgiving diane?

Nikki: You have a fear of flying pies. That’s funny.

Diane: [ Sighs ] I’d like to get the insults and attacks over with before your food is served. Who knows what else might get hurled across the table? And I’m wearing a new outfit.

Nikki: I am so glad I ordered the beet soup.

Diane: Ha ha.

Nikki: Oh, lighten up. I’m kidding.

Diane: [ Sighs ] So where is this seemingly laissez faire attitude coming from?

Nikki: I’ve just decided that it’s easier to ignore you than to engage. Although it is harder when you come up to my table.

Diane: Let’s be honest. If I hadn’t walked over here, you would have confronted me.

Nikki: Ah, wrong, as usual. You’re just not worth my energy. I have a very full life to live.

Diane: Oh, and I’m sure the constant upheaval at newman enterprises is keeping you very busy. At this point, are there any members of your family that haven’t been ceo?

Nikki: Well, that is so sweet of you to be concerned. But the company is thriving, so you need only be concerned about your workplace.

Diane: Oh. Oh, marchetti is doing great. Thanks in large part to my son’s leadership.

Nikki: Uh-huh. Well, I think my granddaughter had a little something to do with that as well.

Diane: Absolutely. Summer is a wonderful leader, and she’s been so good to me. I really appreciate that she’s kept an open mind and hasn’t just accepted all the things that you and phyllis have told her about me.

Nikki: Well, poor summer really shouldn’t have to deal with you at all, but I’m confident that you will self-sabotage and leave genoa city in disgrace without any help from me at all. Now, I will admit that in the beginning I felt the need to rush that process along. But you know what? It’s really not worth my time, because I know that you are capable of blowing up your life all on your own.

Diane: Wow. This new and enlightened version of you is almost cuddly. I’m curious, though. Phyllis seems to have made a turn as well, selling her beloved hotel to work at the same company as I do. Come on, nikki. You and phyllis might talk a good game about letting go, but something’s clearly afoot. Hi, I’m denise.

Talia: So does nikki know about your plan?

Phyllis: Oh, yeah. She’s in on it, for sure. You know, we’re keeping it on the down low. You have to be crafty when you deal with diane. You have to think on your feet. So that’s why I think in your case, you should just keep it to your cover story, you know, your piece on ashland locke.

Talia: So what exactly is going down with diane?

Phyllis: Well, what’s going to go down with diane is she’s going to get into trouble at her job. But it won’t be because of anything that I did. I mean, talia, she’s in way over her head. She’s going to run into trouble. She’s going to screw up and she’s going to get fired.

Diane: So what do you and phyllis have up your sleeve?

Nikki: Diane, you deluded narcissist, not everything is about you, dear. Did it ever cross your mind that phyllis simply wants to work with her daughter? Just as I love working with nicholas and victoria, and I assume you love working with kyle?

Diane: Mm-hmm, I could believe that, had I not witnessed how much phyllis loved owning that hotel.

Nikki: Mm. Well, she’s never really been very successful hanging on to anything. Careers, men.

Diane: Oh, insulting her. Very clever strategy.

Nikki: I’m sorry?

Diane: You’re hoping that if you say mean and nasty things about phyllis, it’ll convince me that you’re not working together.

Nikki: I am simply explaining to you why she wanted to work at marchetti, so you can forget about your conspiracy theory.

Diane: If there was truly nothing going on, you wouldn’t care what I thought.

Nikki: You know what, diane? I think all those years living in hiding have made you paranoid.

Diane: Now you’re deflecting, trying to get me on the defensive.

Nikki: I am merely expressing concern for your well-being.

Diane: Oh, come on. You being polite and considerate is the biggest red flag of all.

Nikki: Being civil is just easier. It’s less exhausting because everybody has grown bored with your drama and we’ve moved on.

Diane: My drama? You and phyllis are the drama queens of genoa city.

Nikki: Now, dear, unless you are planning a better exit than your murder turned out to be, you’re just going to have to accept the fact that the novelty of your very dramatic return has just worn off. You’re not the center of attention anymore. Nobody is really thinking about you at all. Although I almost wish I could be there when you finally realize that, because, really, how sad and pathetic will that be.

Jack: I’m not sure forgiveness is the right word. I’m — I’m not sure what is.

Traci: Well, what would forgiveness look like for you and diane?

Jack: Uh…

Allie: Hey, you guys.

Jack: Hey!

Noah: How’s it going?

Allie: Oh, my gosh. I am so glad you guys are both here. We have some great news.

Sally: What would you like to know?

Nick: Victoria told me about adam’s attempt to get you to publish evidence that he just happened upon regarding ashland’s death.

Sally: I know the truth about what went down that night. And I understand why you were so sick over it.

Nick: It was our goal to keep the circle of people who knew about it very small. But now, thanks to adam, you are burdened with that secret.

Sally: You don’t have to worry about me. When I want to keep my mouth shut, I am an impenetrable fortress. Not only am I not going to publish the story, I will never tell anyone about it, ever.

Nick: You’ve proven that you can be trusted.

Sally: Well, I’m sorry for how difficult things must have been. And still might be.

Nick: I just — you know, I did what I did because I was protecting my sister.

Sally: And I’m sure victoria is very grateful for what you did. Frankly, the town is breathing a heck of a lot easier without ashland around. And honestly, if your father hadn’t gotten involved and everyone found out, they would probably give you the key to the city or something.

Nick: No. I don’t know about that.

Sally: Well, in my experience, truly brave people are usually modest. I will say one thing about the newmans. You guys can be intimidating, but you really go to the mat for each other. Spending more time around your family, I understand less about adam’s attitude towards you all.

Nick: Sally, I just hope you know how genuinely appreciative I am that you turned adam down and that you went to victoria and gave her a heads up.

Sally: Well, there was never any risk of adam getting me to do his bidding. And as far as going to see victoria, you should all just be on guard about adam’s state of mind. He’s in pursuit of one thing — revenge.

Adam: You know more than anybody that rage is my — my baseline emotion. I’m — I’m like a 2 right now. So it can get a lot worse.

Chelsea: That’s what I’m afraid of. You talking about me going down a rabbit hole, but what about you? I see you walking around all calm, but I know something is burning under the surface.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Chelsea: You’re feeling wounded these days. Makes you want to lash out. You want to hurt the people that have hurt you. That side of you is back with a vengeance. I know how dangerous that can get. You gave me some good advice earlier, so let me ask you… is there any way I can talk you off the ledge? I brought in ensure max protein

Allie: As I may have mentioned, noah is looking for a space for the amazing club that he wants to open.

Jack: Uh-huh.

Allie: And guess what.

Traci: He found a good location.

Allie: Not just a good one. The best.

Adam: Yep, the glam club will officially be opening its doors at the grand phoenix as soon as the chancellor-winters acquisition of the hotel is finalized.

Jack: Phyllis actually went through with the sale. Even with her job at marchetti, I wasn’t sure she could bear to let go of it.

Allie: Noah pitched the idea to lily, and she loved it.

Noah: Oh, no hesitation. She was on board from the get-go.

Allie: It was like the perfect fit.

Jack: This sounds like a celebration. How about lunch at society?

Noah: Yeah, sounds good.

Jack: We’re in.

Adam: Thanks for trying to look out for me, but you can’t help me now. This is between me and my dad, okay? I let him use me yet again and toss me aside.

Chelsea: Pushing you out of the company in favor of victoria is wrong, but sadly predictable. It’s a signature victor move.

Adam: Mm. No, you don’t know the half of what dear old dad has done this time, okay? He pulled another one of his classic maneuvers, and once again, just dredging up a lot of damage from the past.

Chelsea: What do you mean?

Adam: Ashland locke didn’t die in that car crash.

Chelsea: What? I thought the investigation was closed.

Adam: Well, it was, but that’s because dad made sure of it.

Chelsea: So, how did ashland die?

Adam: Apparently, ashland turned up at victoria’s in some sort of a rage, and to protect our sister, nick accidentally killed him.

Chelsea: Oh, my god. No wonder victoria was so tense when I saw her the other day.

Adam: Yeah, it was a bad situation all around. But what does dad do? He covers it up, moves the body so he can keep the newman hands clean.

Chelsea: Did victor tell you all this?

Adam: Well, never mind how i found out about it. The point is, he covered it up. Chelsea.

Chelsea: Wow. I see so many parallels between ashland’s death and A.J. Montalvo’s back in kansas.

Adam: Yeah, if he got away with it once, why not try it again?

Chelsea: I mean, I’m sure this brings up a lot for you, but I — I thought you found peace with it.

Adam: How do you make peace with finding out that you’re a child killer and nobody told you? I mean, you could pretend, stuff it down, but it never goes away. I mean, the fact that they kept this from me for all these years — it just — it did me a lot more harm than good.

Chelsea: I think he was trying to protect you from getting hurt. I think he wanted to help you because you’re his son, the same way you would go to extremes to protect connor and maybe even me, even though we’re not together anymore.

Nick: I appreciate the warning, but this isn’t the first time adam’s tried to get revenge on our family. I was really hoping that after he gave faith one of his kidneys that he would turn a corner. But obviously I was wrong about that. You know, I would like to give my brother the benefit of the doubt, but he’s made his position crystal-clear.

Sally: I find that really sad.

Nick: It is reality. I’m sure you only got to see the good side of adam when you guys were together, you know, but my family has had to deal with the best and worst of adam. And I don’t like saying this to you, sally, ’cause I know you care about him but I think — I think you’re better off not being in a relationship with him. And now please welcome ana montoya.

Talia: Can I ask, why are you rooting for diane jenkins to fail?

Phyllis: I know you did your research, and I know you read that article in restless style from years ago detailing all these things she did. I mean, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Talia: Really? Because the things in that story were out there — home-wrecking, arson, sperm stealing?

Phyllis: Sperm stealing. Yes. Completely out there. I mean, if I told you everything else, your head would start spinning and it wouldn’t stop spinning.

Talia: I want to know everything.

Phyllis: Alright. Have a seat. Get comfortable. I’ll tell you everything. And honestly, I’m not holding back. Where do you want to start? Multiple blackmails? Child abandonment? Faking her own death?

Nikki: I certainly hope you didn’t mistake my earlier civility as an invitation to join me.

Diane: [ Scoffs ] Certainly not.

Jack: Ohh, that cannot be good.

Traci: Well, you know, why don’t we just leave them alone, okay? Maybe we — [ Sighs ] Maybe not.

Jack: Hi.

Nikki: Hello, jack.

Diane: Hi. Traci.

Traci: Hello, ladies.

Jack: Are we interrupting some kind of tte–tte?

Nikki: Oh, no, not at all. I’m just finishing my lunch at my table for one. Diane is just leaving.

Diane: Waiting for takeout.

Jack: Everything alright?

Nikki: Really, jack?

Diane: [ Laughs ]

Sally: As many times as i have told myself things are over with adam and knowing it’s for the best, part of me still has feelings for him. And maybe, yeah, it’s because i mainly did see the good parts of him, and the bad parts… honestly, I could relate to because, in a certain way, I’ve lived in adam’s shoes. I have felt burned and insulted by people and was so determined to make them regret it. I mean, sure, yes, that wasn’t the only way adam and I were alike, but it definitely sparked a connection.

Nick: I’m aware of some of the stunts you’ve pulled in the past. I’d like to believe you’ve left all that behind.

Sally: I would, too. But I won’t lie. I definitely get the urge from time to time to deliver a swift dose of payback to those who wronged me, not wait for karma to kick them in the ass. But that’s natural, right?

[ Both laugh ]

Nick: Yeah, I think, uh — I think we’ve all been there, you know, some of us more than others.

Sally: Well, my point is, i haven’t acted on any of those darker impulses. And maybe the turning of the tides was people actually having faith in me — or at least willing to give me a fair chance…the way you have. It really made a difference for me.

Nick: Yeah. I’d like to believe that a little faith could create a change in adam. You know, I’d like to have a brother that I could have a bond with or trust. But unfortunately, adam has proven over and over again that his turnarounds just don’t last very long.

Adam: You’re right. I would move heaven and earth for connor. I would break any law. Hell, I would move a dozen bodies if I thought that it would genuinely help him. And I would probably move a couple corpses for connor’s mother, as well.

Chelsea: Well, hopefully it doesn’t come to that, but i appreciate it.

Adam: But that doesn’t mean that you can pick and choose the things that victor does which are bad and good because even when he does something decent, it comes at a price always.

Chelsea: Oh, as someone who went to the mental hospital instead of jail because of him, I am very well aware of how he operates.

Adam: Yes. You understand. But he’ll never admit it. The man will never apologize. And I think it’s time someone forced his hand right here, right now. And I happen to have the power and the evidence to do it. (Buzz)

Allie: Was I gushing too much with jack and traci earlier?

Noah: No, it was the perfect amount of gush.

Allie: Uh-oh.

Noah: Okay, that looks like it could turn into a knockdown, drag-out fight any second now.

Allie: Yep. With my grandfather trapped in the middle.

Noah: If things get gnarly, my money’s on grandma. That lady’s tough as nails.

Allie: Yeah, but diane’s sneaky. And I wouldn’t count traci out. That woman’s been through some things. Hey, promise me this. No matter how hostile it gets inside there, it is not gonna spoil this amazing day for the two of us.

Noah: It won’T.

Nikki: I was minding my own business, and then diane appeared uninvited. Yet I couldn’t have been more civil. Isn’t that right, diane?

Diane: That’s true. Nikki has been pleasantly, shockingly, bizarrely even-keeled.

Nikki: So, yes, jack, everything is fine. See you. Hi!

Noah: Hey, grandma. You heading out?

Nikki: Uh, yeah. It’s getting a little crowded in here.

Noah: Okay, well, we’ll have to catch up some other time, but before you go, I want to introduce you to allie.

Nikki: Oh, it’s a pleasure. I’ve heard so much about you from noah.

Allie: Same here. It’s so lovely meeting you.

Nikki: Well, I hope that we can spend some time together soon.

Allie: I would love that.

Nikki: You two have fun.

Noah: Okay. I’ll check in with you later.

Nikki: Alright, sweetie.

Noah: Night.

Jack: I suppose I did jump to the conclusion that nikki was harassing you.

Diane: Not a bad guess.

Allie: Hi, everyone. Thank you again for offering to take us out to celebrate.

Jack: You are most welcome.

Allie: Should we get a table?

Nikki: You know what? Let’s — let’s do that.

Diane: What’s the occasion?

Allie: We’re celebrating my boyfriend’s new club.

Diane: Oh! Wow. That’s wonderful.

Jack: Would you like to join us?

Diane: Well, normally I would love to, but I have a job that I’m devoted to, and I need to get back to work. Ah, looks like my take-out is ready. Noah, congratulations. I can’t wait to check out the club once it opens. Bye.

Jack: Bye.

Traci: [ Sighs ]

[ Clears throat ]

Jack: What?

Traci: I think our table’s ready.

Sally: Of course I understand you have a longer history with adam than I do. I’m not pleading his case here. I just… I’m worried about him. That’s why I couldn’t keep quiet about it.

Adam: Well, vick and I are grateful for that.

Sally: Telling her was in everyone’s best interest, including adam’S. I wish someone had told me when I was hell-bent on revenge ’cause that is a road I never want to go down again.

Nick: Well, I think you’ve come a long way.

Sally: It’s a daily journey, right?

Chelsea: I get your drive and your frustration. I’ve been there, as you know. You want justice, and you’ll go to dark places to get it.

Adam: But that — that’s the thing, chelsea. This isn’t dark. All I’m trying to do is expose the truth to light.

Chelsea: We both know there’s a lot more to it. If you try to hurt victor, he’s gonna go after you. He’s like you in that regard. Reigniting this battle will be a mistake for you and for connor.

Adam: Okay, I can and I will keep connor completely out of it.

Chelsea: We both know that’s not possible. Connor loves his father and his grandfather. He’ll be stuck in the middle. There’s no way he can be immune to the fallout. You don’t want to traumatize your kid, do not start a war with his grandfather.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: You want to beat victor, beat him by being a better dad. Focus on the future. Focus on connor. Stop keeping score and stop holding grudges. Beat victor by letting go.

Talia: I can’t believe one person could do so much in one lifetime.

Phyllis: I know. Can you believe it? I mean, diane’s a real overachiever in that sense. I mean — but I — I just think that if someone were to, um, try to get the world reacquainted with her past deeds, that might unnerve diane and she’ll go back to the person she was — I mean, the person that she’s always been, of course. I mean, she’ll just snap. And then certain people — it will prove to them that she has not changed at all.

Talia: I’m open to exploring diane’s life. I just don’t want to report on a story that’s already been out there.

Phyllis: Oh, no, wait. I totally understand that. I mean, I certainly believe that there’s something to uncover in her time in los angeles, for sure. So, I think that, um, if I were to give you some juicy details that weren’t in the

restless style story and you were to put those out in the world while you’re investigating her activity in los angeles, that could really be the story of the century — the downfall of diane jenkins.

Jack: Boy, the kids sure left right after we ate. Was it us?

Traci: Boy, I hope not. I mean, I certainly enjoy your company, that’s for sure.

Jack: And I definitely enjoy yours. But you know what? I remember what it was to be their age, young and in —

Traci: Lust. Mm-hmm.

Jack: It is my granddaughter we are talking about.

Traci: [ Laughs ] But, jack, you’re making it sound like you and I are all washed up here. I mean, I think it’s a little premature to put us out to pasture. I predict that one of these days, very soon, for us both, there will be nothing we’ll want more than to spend time alone with a special someone in our lives.

Jack: Please tell me we are not circling back to that subject.

Traci: What subject?

Jack: Diane.

Traci: [ Sighs ]

Jack: She is not a special someone in my life.

Traci: I understand that. And, believe me, I am not pushing the two of you together. I’m just making an observation that for somebody that you are not ready to forgive, you certainly want to spend a lot of time together.

Noah: I still can’t believe the club’s gonna become a reality.

Allie: It is. Oh, my gosh. Stop doubting yourself. Hey. I believe in you.

Noah: I got to share the credit with you.

Allie: No, you don’T. This was all your idea.

Noah: Babe, lily saw the enthusiasm in your eyes, okay? It was contagious. Gave me fresh inspiration during my pitch. It helped me envision what the place could actually be. That was all because of you.

Allie: Well, I am not gonna take any credit for it. But I did love getting to be a part of it. Noah, this is — this is so incredible.

Noah: You’re incredible. Hey. Are you sure?

Allie: Yeah. I’m sure.

Adam: Well, god knows you’re not the first person to tell me I need to break the cycle with victor.

Chelsea: Well, maybe it’s about time you start to listen?

Adam: [ Sighs ] At least jack gave me a job offer.

Chelsea: You’re kidding?

Adam: Mm-hmm. I thought he was kidding at first, but he was serious.

Chelsea: Oh, adam, congratulations. I think working at jabot would be an awesome fit for you.

Adam: I turned it down.

Chelsea: What? Why? Jack respects you and cares about you, and it’s about time you separated from the newmans, you know, started fresh.

Adam: Well, how often do you and I make the right moves for ourselves?

Chelsea: Mm, that’s a good point, very valid point. Listen, I was starting fresh. It felt good for a little while, then boom, bam — bye-bye, podcast.

[ Chuckles, groans ]

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Ah.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Adam: We certainly are a pair, aren’t we?

Chelsea: We are on a killer winning streak, yeah.

Adam: Mm-hmm. You know, they call people like us “coolers” at the blackjack table.

Chelsea: Oh. Because we’re so cool?

Adam: Super cool.

Chelsea: We have been through a lot together. The fact that we don’t hate each other after all of it belongs in a history book somewhere.

Adam: I am really glad that we’ve gotten to a place where we can support each other emotionally.
