Recap written by Christine

At the Chancellor house, Abby rebuffed Mariah’s attempts to help her with the baby’s stroller. Abby said she was taking Dom to Chancellor Park, and she left. Shortly afterward, Tessa came in and saw Mariah crying. Tessa asked what was wrong. “Abby and Bowie, sorry, Dominic, they were going out and the stroller, just and I… I just wanted to help,” Mariah stammered. She pulled herself together and said she felt sad when she saw Abby and Dom walk out the door. She wasn’t sure why. She just worried sometimes for some reason. Tessa thought that was natural after what Stitch put Mariah through. Mariah had this feeling she couldn’t shake, and she felt so bad. “Abby’s history is the reason why Bowie and me were put in jeopardy. You know, her relationship with Stitch,” Mariah stated. She pointed out that Abby needed a surrogate because of her relationship with Stitch, then he came back, and he brought chaos and disaster. She said Stitch still wanted Abby, and he was willing to do crazy things to get her back. Tessa asked Mariah if she blamed Abby for Stitch’s actions.

Mariah was ashamed of her thoughts. She said she didn’t blame Abby, but then she was going to say something else that she decided against voicing. Tessa assured Mariah that she could be open with her. Mariah was terrified that Stitch would come back. Tessa said that Stitch was a wanted fugitive, and none of them would be tricked by them again. She added that Chance would return, and Stitch would realize he had no chance with Abby. Mariah countered that they had no idea how long that would take. She wanted to be brave, but she couldn’t. She felt like she used up all her bravery in that room. She had so many thoughts that were drowning out all the good things around her. Tessa wished Mariah could see herself from Tessa’s perspective. She thought Mariah needed time and space to work through things. She suggested they go do something as a distraction, but Mariah didn’t feel up to that. She wanted to be alone, so she left the house.

Nick went to The Grand Phoenix and flirted with Phyllis on his way to the hotel gym. After he left for his workout, Jack showed up. He wanted to apologize to Phyllis for making her feel uncomfortable. She assured him that he didn’t make her uncomfortable. He knew she was with Nick now. She confirmed that she was with Nick, and she noted that Jack never declared that he was pursue her. Phyllis stated that she and Jack had known each other a long time, and he didn’t have to apologize for telling her his truth. He made it clear that he was apologizing for possibly making her uncomfortable – not for the things he said last night, because they were true then and now. Nick returned and said he got a text from Summer saying that it was time to make travel preparations for her civil ceremony with Kyle. Phyllis gushed about all the Italian weddings, and Nick said there was a lot of love in the air. Jack looked wistful.

Jack headed to Chancellor Park, where he was delighted to run into Abby and Dom. He called Dom a miracle and asked if Chance was enjoying the pictures. Abby said that Chance didn’t know the baby had been born. Jack offered to try and use his connections to reach Chance. Abby said that Christine had tried, and if she couldn’t reach him, no one probably could. Jack knew what it was like to be separated from someone you loved, and it had to be harder when you couldn’t communicate with them. It broke Abby’s heart that Chance didn’t know he was a father. Jack said at least Abby had a bundle of joy to hold while she waited. Abby said that Chance would be home soon and Dom wouldn’t miss out on one bit of love – everyone at the house would make sure of that.

Abby went home and told Tessa that while Dom was probably too little to take a lot of things in, he’d seemed so curious about his new surroundings. Tessa confided that Mariah was scared and worried after Abby and the baby left. Obviously, it was the kidnapping, but Mariah missed Dominic too. Tessa said Mariah was struggling, and it was getting worse. Abby didn’t know how anyone could hold up after what Mariah went through. She loved Mariah and was grateful to her and wanted to help her through this. They didn’t notice Mariah had returned and overheard them talking.

Back at the hotel, Phyllis showed Nick some dresses that she thought might be right for Summer to wear at her ceremony. He didn’t seem interested in the conversation. She acknowledged that something was distracting him. He said he was happy with what he was feeling – it was comfortable and content. He stated that they had flirtation and fun. “But it’s not all we have, right?,” he asked. She thought they had a good balance of love and fun. She said they’d been through a lot and paid their dues, so this was easy. He was glad they were on the same page about where things stood this time around. He guessed they were lucky. She grabbed his hand and said she felt lucky and grateful. Jack returned and saw Nick and Phyllis holding hands. He left before they saw him.

Victor wanted to get to know Ashland better, since they were going to be in laws. He mused that it wasn’t always about business. Ashland was surprised to hear Victor say that. Victor asked how Ashland’s treatment was going. Ashland had some rough days, but he felt stronger after the sessions. Victor asked about Ashland’s early career. Victor assumed Ashland was familiar with his early days. Ashland had read the biography – Victor grew up in an orphanage – he had a father who deserted the family and a mother who promised to come back for him but was never able to. Ashland added that Victor left the orphanage as a teen, changed his name and took charge of his life, laying the groundwork for the empire. Victor asked if any of his story resonated with Ashland. Ashland said that he also had to jump start his life as a teen. He was close to his parents, who were well-meaning people. He said a book about his life wouldn’t be as interesting as Victor’s. He said that Victoria had been key in teaching him to live in the moment, and he felt like he should never look back. Victor asked if Ashland didn’t think early experiences made them who they were today.

At Society, Billy ran into Victoria. He mentioned that he’d heard Ashland personally invited Nate to the wedding. Billy was wondering where his personal invitation was. Victoria wondered why she even added Billy to the guest list, when all he did was dig for dirt on her fiance. Billy said he’d get out of her hair if she told him about Ashland’s history. She told him that he wasn’t being as charming as he thought he was. He changed the subject and asked how Nate became Ashland’s new BFF. She said they weren’t BFFs – Nate and Ashland had a few things in common and they hit it off. He asked why she wasn’t curious about Ashland’s past, and she told him not to presume to know what she cared about. She was tired of the fishing expedition. He said he was just trying to fill the holes. It seemed like Ashland didn’t exist before he met his mentor, Camilla Rhodes. Victoria called that ridiculous. Billy said they hadn’t found a birth certificate on Ashland or a death certificate for his parents, whom Ashland said he lost as a teen. Victoria mocked Billy for thinking this was a big deal. She said documents back then were on paper, maybe they were just missing or buried in a warehouse. Billy admitted that Lily said the same thing. Victoria wondered what a smart woman like Lily was doing with Billy. Billy said he wasn’t looking for reasons to doubt her fiance – they just kept falling in his lap. She thought they’d be better off if he’d drop this ridiculous search. She told him he’d better not badmouth Ashland to their children. He asked if she really thought he’d do that. She didn’t know what he was capable of when it came to Ashland. She said if he kept this up, she’d let him know what she was capable of. She left.

Ashland and Victoria got home around the same time. She said an encounter with Billy left her with a bitter taste. She relayed what Billy said about the missing vital records on Ashland and his family. She thought Billy was being ridiculous. Ashland got another text from the unnamed person. The original said “You’re a hard man to keep track of.” The new one said “you’ll regret ignoring me.” Ashland stared at the phone, and Victoria asked if he was listening. He admitted Billy wasn’t wrong, and there was something Victoria needed to know.

Adam and Chelsea were on a video chat, while he was in his office. They’d just finished talking about what a good time Connor had at camp, and she was blindsided when he said it was time to tell Connor what was going on between them. She’d just thought things would get better with time. Adam thought it was time for them to go their separate ways. Chelsea asked if they shouldn’t try again for Connor’s sake. Adam noted that Chelsea recently wanted him out of her life so badly that she tried to send him to prison. Chelsea thought, after all they’d been through, this would warrant a longer discussion, but she accepted that this was how Adam felt. She told him he had to wait until she came home so she could be part of the discussion. He asked when she’d be back. She wasn’t sure – Anita fell and re-injured herself, and Chelsea had to stay and take care of her. Anita wouldn’t let her hire a nurse. Adam thought Anita was just being Anita. She asked if he was accusing her mother of faking her fall. He just knew he didn’t want to wait – it wasn’t fair to Connor. He thought he should just deal with this himself. She suggested he bring Connor to Minnesota so she could be part of the conversation. He didn’t like that idea, because he was worried Connor would get the wrong idea about the trip and be crushed when he learned the truth. Chelsea felt like Adam was making up excuses to exclude her from the discussion. He asserted that he wasn’t trying to be cruel, he was trying to do what was best for their son. She accused him of thinking about what was easiest for him, and she ended the call.

Rey went to Crimson Lights on his break, hoping to surprise Sharon, but she wasn’t there. When she walked in, she revealed that she’d gone to see Adam. He asked why. She noted that Rey already knew – Adam wanted advice on talking to Connor, and Rey was the one who urged him not to put that off. Rey said he suggested that thinking that someone besides Sharon would give Adam guidance. He knew it was in Sharon’s nature to want to help though, and that was one of the things he loved best about her. He asked if Adam would ever be out of their lives. He had to head back to the station. She asked him to stay for a few minutes, but he saw no point since he’d said his piece, and he didn’t think it would change anything. He left. Sally was by the door, and she saw Rey leaving.

Sally went to Sharon and she struck up a conversation with Sharon that was laced with tension. Sally said she was getting bored with her drink order. She asked Sharon to pick one for her. Sally mentioned she used to read Restless Style and asked if Sharon missed fashion. Sharon said not at all – she had a Master’s degree in psychology, and along with running this place, her life was full. Sally pointedly stated that Sharon had a great career and a handsome husband. Adam walked in and told Sally that Chloe was looking for her at the office. She offered to wait for him, and he said he wasn’t heading back yet. Sally left. Sharon told Adam that Sally seemed like a handful. He was amused by her take on Sally, who always seemed to get a reaction out of people. Sharon said she was reacting to Sally’s obvious crush on Adam. Adam thought Sharon was letting her imagination run wild, but Sharon said she was good at picking up on things like this. He stated that even if Sally was crushing on him, it didn’t matter because he was focused on Connor and his business. After the conversation he just had with Chelsea, the last thing he needed was to get involved with another complicated woman. Sharon suggested that the complications made it interesting, but he said it wasn’t. He thought he was the problem – he failed with Sharon and Chelsea, and he didn’t want to put someone else through that inevitable train wreck. He was fine being alone for now. She said sometimes, that was the best approach.

Sally went to work and pumped Chloe for information on Sharon and Adam’s past. Chloe was dismayed because she thought Sally had a thing for Adam. Sally denied this and said she was just curious. Chloe said Adam and Sharon had a complicated and profound relationship. Chelsea and Adam’s relationship blew up because his bond with Sharon pushed Chelsea over the edge. Chloe didn’t think Adam would ever get Sharon out of his system.

Recap written by Christine

Jack apologized if he’d made Phyllis uncomfortable. She assured him that she wasn’t uncomfortable with him telling her how he felt. He made it clear that he wasn’t sorry for the way he felt about her. Nick arrived and said he got a text from Summer saying that it was time to make travel arrangements to be there for her and Kyle’s civil ceremony. After Jack left, Nick asked Phyllis if their relationship had something more than fun and flirtation. She thought it had love too, and she thought things were so easy this time because they’d paid their dues. She held his hand. Jack returned and left again when he saw Phyllis and Nick’s tender moment. They realized he’d come back. Victor asked Ashland about his early life. Ashland didn’t give much detail, explaining that Victoria had taught him to live in the moment. Billy came to Victoria and told her there was no record of Ashland’s birth or of his parents’ death. Victoria didn’t think it was a big deal that old documents like that weren’t readily available. She warned him that if he kept trying to cause issues, she’d show him what she was capable of. Victoria relayed what Billy had said to Ashland. Ashland got a text from someone saying “you’ll regret ignoring me.” Ashland told Victoria that Billy wasn’t wrong. He said there was something she needed to know. Tessa found Mariah crying after Abby took the baby to the park. Mariah felt bad for thinking this, but she said Abby’s relationship with Stitch put Mariah and Bowie in jeopardy. Abby only needed a surrogate because of her relationship with Stitch, then he returned and brought chaos. Mariah was scared Stitch would come back. Tessa tried to comfort her. Mariah left.

Jack ran into Abby and the baby at the park and marveled at his nephew. Abby wished Chance knew about Dom, but she was optimistic that he’d be home soon. Mariah overheard Tessa telling Abby that Mariah was struggling with the kidnapping and missing the baby. Abby wanted to help Mariah. Chelsea was caught off guard when Adam wanted to tell Connor that his parents had split. Chelsea wanted to try again, for Connor, but Adam thought they should go their separate ways. Chelsea wanted to be there for the discussion, but her mother had fallen again, and Chelsea could leave her. When Adam learned that Chelsea had no idea when she’d be back from Minnesota, he decided to talk to Connor alone. He shot down Chelsea’s suggestion to bring Connor to Minnesota for the talk. Chelsea was angry because she thought Adam was excluding her from the conversation. Rey was unhappy that Sharon went to see Adam. He asked if Adam would ever be out of their lives. Sally saw Rey leave, and she struck up a conversation with Sharon that was laced with tension. She made it a point to note that Sharon had a handsome husband. Adam arrived and Sally went back to work. Sharon said it was obvious that Sally had a crush on Adam. Adam didn’t think that was true, but even if it was, he didn’t need to be with another complicated woman, and he didn’t think he was capable of having a successful relationship. Sally asked Chloe for details on Sharon and Adam. Chloe said Adam and Sharon had a complicated and profound relationship that drove Chelsea over the edge.

Nikki: Hi.

Victor: What in the world?

Nikki: Well, now, I know i went a little overboard, but it’s not every day that we have a baptism in the family, so I’m allowed.

Victor: Did you buy the whole damn store or what?

Nikki: Hardly. But I just have to tell you, the first time I saw our son, I got the most incredible feeling. I looked in his face and I saw the man he’s gonna be, the man who’s gonna continue and extend that special magic of his father. I’m just so grateful that we gave each other a son. Our son, nicholas christian newman. And I just feel that we’ll always be together in him, for future generations.

Victor: Well, now, I guess there is no such thing as too many gifts. Such a joyous occasion.

Nikki: Well, I’m glad to hear you say that because there’s one more thing I need to do for me.

Victor: What?

Nikki: Well, I ordered these baby-themed cupcakes as a surprise for abby. Do you think you’d be able to pick them up and then meet me at the church?

Victor: Pick up cupcakes, where? Where are they?

Nikki: At society. Their pastry chef has been sworn to secrecy.

Victor: You’re asking me, a busy business tycoon, to drive over to society to pick up cupcakes?

Nikki: Would you?

Victor: If you’re sweet with me, I will. I’ll do it for you and for abby.

Nikki: Well, thank you. I’m always sweet. Anyway, I just thought it would be something festive to add to the day.

Victor: So nice of you to do that, okay? I just wish that my son-in-law were here.

Nikki: I know. We’re all praying for his safe return.

Victor: He wasn’t here for the birth of his boy. Now he’s not gonna be here at the baptism of his boy. I guess his son will lay eyes on his father when he is in preschool.

Nikki: Oh, now, I know you’re frustrated. So am I. But this is an important day for our family, so I’m gonna try not to get mired down in negativity.

Victor: Well, then you’re a better person than I am.

Nikki: The point is, baby dominic has devon, he has his grandfather, several uncles — he’s gonna be just fine.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Well, sweetheart, I’m concerned about abby, you know? I mean, where is chance?

Abby: Okay, I think that’s everything — music, flowers.

Ashley: And I’d better get out of here if I’m gonna get over to the chapel and check on everything before the ceremony.

Abby: Mom, I can do that.

Nina: No, there’s no messing with the plan.

Ashley: Sweetie, that’s right, I got it handled, okay? But I want you to do me two favors before I leave — take a deep breath.

[ Breathes deeply ] And then get rid of your phone.

Abby: My security blanket? No way.

Ashley: Listen, we have all played our parts. It’s gonna go perfectly, so please focus on your beautiful son and this wonderful day.

Nina: Listen to your mother. It’s time to relax and enjoy.

Abby: Well, thank you both so much. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.

Nina: Well, everything would still be perfect, but you’d be a whole lot more frazzled.

Ashley: That sounds about right.

Nina: I’m gonna go get ready.

Ashley: Okay, see you. And I will see you at the baptism.

Abby: Okay.

Ashley: Okay. Hi. I see you’re back.

Jack: Surprised seeing you here. Hey.

Abby: Uncle jack, hi!

Jack: I know everyone’s meeting at the church, but i wanted to come by and see how you were doing.

Abby: Uh, I am — I’m good. A tad bit overwhelmed, but good.

Jack: I’d b weren’T.

Abby: [ Gasps ] Thank you. Gosh, can you believe this? After everything we’ve been through, this is actually happening. I mean, it’s finally sinking in. I am christening my baby boy today. It’s a miracle for me on so many levels.

Jack: I am thrilled for you. And I can see already what a wonderful mother you’re going to be.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Tessa: So…how are you feeling about the christening? No judgment, just unconditional love and support.

Mariah: I am feeling much better about things.

Tessa: Yeah?

Mariah: I’m excited for the ceremony. And I am really, really happy that I am bowie’s godmother. I think I’m gonna keep calling dominic that, you know? My mom was right, I can have a nickname for him.

Tessa: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Mariah: It can be a part of our special bond. And that’s how I see being a godmother. Someone who takes special interest in the child’s wellbeing. Part of the circle of people that love him and want him to grow up happy and healthy.

Tessa: Well, that is a great way to look at it.

Mariah: You seem relieved. Were you concerned that I wasn’t gonna be able to handle today?

Devon: Moses! Got some coffee and bagels, man.

Amanda: Well, that sounds delicious.

Devon: Now, when did you get back?

Amanda: While you were at the market.

Devon: Oh, yeah?

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Devon: Where’s moses at?

Amanda: Well, he’s already left for school, so I don’t know if you want to come and join me in bed, welcome me home from my trip? Or maybe you’re too hungry to, uh — alright, then.

[ Both chuckle ]

Victor: Well, now, if it isn’T…

Ashley: Hi.

Victor: Goodness. I didn’t expect to see you till the christening.

Ashley: I know. Well, I’m on my way to the chapel to make sure everything is set up properly.

Victor: Uh-huh. Well, I’m on a secret cupcake mission, you know, to society.

Ashley: Must be pretty amazing cupcakes.

Victor: Oh. Special occasion.

Ashley: It’s momentous, when you think of everything that had to happen to get here. I mean, the journey that our daughter’s been on.

Victor: Yeah. Certainly have thrown a lot of obstacles at her.

Ashley: Oh, she’s overcome every single one of them. You know why? She wasn’t gonna let anything stand in the way of her dream.

Victor: Because she’s a very determined young lady, and i wonder who she gets that from.

Ashley: I don’t know.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Ashley: I’m so proud of her. And chance, too, the way that he willingly accepted help from mariah and devon. He wanted to make this happen for abby.

Victor: Yeah, I give him that.

Ashley: You know, he’s the kind of a man that you dream your daughter would end up with, but I just really wish we could bring him back.

Victor: To be honest with you, I did admire that, but right now, it’s getting a little bit too much. I mean, he has other obligations and duties that take precedence. He has to raise his child. To hell with his assignment, it’s gone on too long.

Ashley: Yeah. You know what? You’re not gonna get an argument from me on that one.

Victor: What do you think if you and I put our heads together and do something about it?

I may have moderate to

severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Devon: I am so happy to hear that you had fun with your mom and your sister. Sounds like you guys are making some real beautiful memories together.

Amanda: Yeah, it was great getting to know them and understand them better, especially without all the drama to contend with. It was serene and relaxing. Well, until yesterday.

Devon: Why, what happened yesterday?

Amanda: Naya got a call from her doctor. He got some results back from tests that he had taken before she left town.

Devon: Was it bad news or…?

Amanda: My mother has atrial fibrillation. She had no idea, and it’s extra hard on her with, you know, sutton’s trial coming up. It’s double whammy, and everything is just so stressful.

Devon: I could only imagine.

Amanda: Yeah, so I want to make sure that I find her the best doctors, get her the best possible care.

Devon: Well, you know that i can help you doing that, any way that I can.

Amanda: Thank you.

Devon: Of course.

Amanda: I appreciate that. Okay, well, enough about me. What’s going on with you? How’s the baby?

Devon: [ Chuckles ] Dominic?

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Devon: Dominic is, uh… well, he’s great. He’s really great. I feel like he’s already getting big. I don’t want to brag, but i might be some kind of a baby whisperer, ’cause the other day, he was crying and crying, and no one was able to calm him down except for me.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: So…

Amanda: Well, I am not surprised because you always know exactly how to make me feel better.

Devon: I try.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: You know today’s the baptism, right?

Amanda: Yes, I know. You were telling me. It’s so fast.

Devon: I know. And you’re obviously invited to go, but I understand completely if you don’t feel up to it.

Amanda: I would love to go. Being a part of something positive and life-affirming right now, that would be soothing to my soul. And I know how important it is to you to be his godfather.

Jack: So, how is mariah doing?

Abby: Oh, well, she would like us to believe that she’s doing okay, but, gosh, this whole thing has been so traumatizing for her, and i think she’s really struggling. And tessa just confirmed that when I spoke to her.

Jack: Yeah, I’m not surprised to hear that. She asked for an extension of her leave-of-absence. It’s not like her.

Abby: She told me about that. She’s not herself right now.

Jack: I told her to take as much time as she needed to heal.

Abby: You know, those weeks leading up to the birth, they were supposed to be joyous ones, but instead, she was isolated, she was locked in a room. I mean, she had no idea who kidnapped her or what they intended to do with her or the baby.

Jack: Mariah is a survivor. She has a great support system all around her and a mother who is a professional counselor.

Abby: Well, yes, mariah is incredibly strong. I just think it’s gonna take some time, and she’s not there yet.

Jack: I get that.

Abby: Last night, I invited mariah and devon to come over and help me interview some potential nanny candidates, and I found a very strong choice, so I hired her on the spot. And I’m just hoping it’s gonna give mariah some relief, knowing that dominic’s gonna be in good hands when I can’t be with him.

Jack: Yeah, I’d like to think it would help her, having that burden lifted.

Abby: Yeah, this way, she can just focus on herself and she get through this nightmare.

Jack: Well, hopefully, she’ll come back to jabot. I’m not gonna pressure her at all, but I think it would do her a world of good.

Abby: That’s what it’s gonna take to get mariah through this — having something to focus on.

Mariah: I get why you would be worried, especially after i told you that there was a tiny part of me that blamed abby for what stitch did to me. And I just — I hate that I have those thoughts.

Tessa: Give yourself a break. You went through hell. Stuff is bound to come up.

Mariah: I suppose.

Tessa: I am glad that you are able to confide in me, tell me what’s really going on with you. Can you keep it up?

Mariah: I just felt like i was drowning. And that’s why I was having those irrational thoughts, and there’s like a million emotions coming into my head all at once. I mean, there was tension and fear and resentment and anger, and then you tangle it all up with giving birth to this innocent little baby, and just the things that were going on in my head… but I’m better. Okay? Bowie getting christened is amazing, and abby asking me to be the godparent, I will admit, I was a little thrown at first, but now it’s like I have an official role in his life, so it’s kind of perfect.

Tessa: Yeah, well, I think you are gonna be the coolest godmother ever. I can’t wait to see you in action.

Mariah: Me too, I can’t wait.

Tessa: Well, we should head to the chapel soon. Refill for the road?

Mariah: Yeah, absolutely.

Abby: Hi.

Abby. And the godparents. I’d like to welcome you all to the baptism of abby and phillip chancellor’s son. Unfortunately, phillip couldn’t be with us today. We thank him for his continuing brave service to our country. We’ll hold him in our hearts and keep him in our prayers. This child truly is a gift from god. Whenever I’ve spoken to abby on the subject, the joy on her face is clear to see. What name do you give your child?

Abby: Dominic. Dominic phillip newman abbott chancellor.

What do you ask of god’s church for dominic?

Abby: Baptism.

In presenting your child for baptism, you’re accepting the responsibility to raise him in the practice of our faith. It will be your duty to bring him up to keep god’s commandments, as christ taught us, by loving god and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you’re undertaking?

Abby: I do.

Mariah and devon, you’ve accepted the sacred responsibility of assisting abby and phillip in their duty as christian parents. You will, through your word and your example, help raise dominic to be a caring, faithful member of his community. Do you clearly understand what you’re undertaking?

Devon: I do.

Mariah: I do.

Dominic, the church welcomes you with great joy. In its name, I claim you for christ our savior. Eternal god, as we baptize with water, baptize us with the holy spirit, that what we say will be your words and what we do may be your works. Dominic phillip newman abbott chancellor, I baptize you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. This child of god is received into the holy church. See what the father has given us, that we are called children of god. My dear brothers and sisters, let us ask our lord jesus christ to look lovingly on this child, on his parents and godparents, that they undertake their sacred duty with faith and love. Join me in welcoming the newest member of our holy family.

Abby: Dominic! I am so proud of you. You were so good at your baptism.

Devon: Yeah, he didn’t make a peep at the chapel.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Nina: That’s a lovely ceremony. It was simple and perfect.

Ashley: It was so moving, seeing the three of you up there pledging to give dominic his best possible future.

Nikki: He is the living embodiment of genoa city’s four most prominent families, and of course, I include the winters in that.

Victor: Yes.

Devon: Oh, thank you very much.

Tessa: No pressure.

[ Laughter ]

Abby: Well, I promise chance and I are gonna raise him to be down-to-earth and humble, just like his godparents. I have to say, I feel so blessed to have you in my life and for you to be dominic’s godparents. I’m forever grateful.

Victor: May I suggest we have a toast? To my newest grandson, dominic.

To dominic. Serena: It’s my 3:10

Amanda: Thank you.

Abby: You’re welcome.

Ashley: Hey.

Abby: Oh!

[ Laughter ]

Victor: You know, sweetheart, I remember when you were born. It was very unexpected. And you were ready. There was no going back. That was it.

Ashley: That’s because she wanted to be here in time for the holidays.

Abby: Hey, you know me, I’ve always been a planner.

Ashley: [ Laughs ]

Victor: I rushed your mother to the hospital. Fortunately, I was there. And then the nurse handed you to me. I was the first one to hold you.

Abby: I love that story.

Devon: I got to hold dominic right after he was born, and that’s a moment that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.

Nina: I am so grateful that you and abby were there, that everything turned out so well. I know chance is gonna be overwhelmed when he hears what you went through to bring his son into the world. And mariah’s incredible bravery.

Mariah: Oh, well, you do what you’ve got to do.

Nina: I know that if it was in his power, chance would be here for this very special day. He knows better than anyone how important it is to be surrounded by love. Whether or not those people are blood relatives.

Nikki: Ah, that is so true.

Ashley: Aww. Well, honey, as you know, your aunt traci can’t be here to help us celebrate, but on the phone last night, she reminded me of your christening and just how smitten our father was with you. Right, jack?

Jack: Oh, yeah, if dad could be here, he would be so incredibly proud, as would neil.

Devon: Yeah. Neil was abby’s godfather.

Amanda: Oh, wow. I mean, the more I hear about your family connections, the more in awe I am of all of you.

Abby: Actually, nate’s mom, olivia, is my godmother. Yeah, my mom and olivia were sorority sisters.

Ashley: Yeah, still very dear friends to this day.

Abby: And I’m just so thankful that my good friend is dominic’s godmother.

Mariah: Oh, I was honored to be asked, and the ceremony was incredibly special.

Abby: Well, you always have an important role in my son’s life. As you should.

Mariah: That means a lot. Um, I’m just gonna — just gonna go.

[ Glass shatters ] Oh, my god!

Abby: Oh, my gosh.

Devon: It’s okay.

Mariah: I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.

Abby: He’s a light sleeper today.

Mariah: Oh, gosh.

Abby: No, it’s okay.

Mariah: I’m such a klutz. I just — it — and now there’s a mess and then the baby’s upset. I’m so — abby, I am so sorry.

Abby: It’s fine, it’s fine. It’s okay.

Tessa: Hey, hey. We’ll be right back. Come on.

Abby: Mommy’s here. It’s okay, mommy’s here. It’s alright.

[ Dominic crying ]

Mariah: Oh, my god. What is wrong with me?! I’m sorry, I’m sorry.

Tessa: Hey, hey, first of all, you don’t have to apologize for anything. Do you hear me?

Mariah: I thought I could do this. I tried. I really, really tried, but they’re telling all these stories, like bowie is already a part of their lives, and their efforts to include me, it just made everything worse.

Tessa: Oh, honey, I —

Mariah: I can’t even be around the baby without my heart shattering into a million pieces.

[ Sighs ] I don’t think I can do this. Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete,

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Dominic should sleep for a while now, knock on wood.

Victor: Why did mariah overreact this way?

Abby: The truth is, there’s still a lot of emotional fallout from the kidnapping. It’s a struggle.

Victor: I guess you’re right.

Jack: The best thing we can all do is show mariah as much love and support as we possibly can.

Ashley: I agree. And to that end, I think we should get some coffee and enjoy these cupcakes. Right? And the party. Because the last thing that mariah needs is to come in and see us all dissecting her behavior.

Nikki: You’re absolutely right.

Ashley: Hey.

Abby: Hi.

Ashley: You alright?

Abby: Yeah, yeah. I’m okay. You know, I’m handling a lot right now, but I think I’m doing it well. And I can feel a lot of different emotions all at once. Love for my beautiful baby boy and concern for mariah and chance.

Ashley: Glad to hear it.

Abby: Yeah. And yeah, all of this would be easier if my husband were here and I didn’t have to handle everything alone, because, yes, it’s exhausting, but, no, I know he is doing everything that he can to get back to us and me worrying is not gonna make him come home any faster.

Ashley: Honey, I’m very proud of you. I’m very proud of how you’re handling all this turmoil.

Abby: Thank you. Gratitude helps. I’m grateful for my friends and my family. Having nina has been amazing. I mean, she’s peeled me off the ceiling I don’t know how many times.

Ashley: I hope you tell her that a lot.

Abby: I do.

[ Chuckles ]

Ashley: Good.

Abby: Every day. And I’m so thankful for you and dad.

Devon: You get some air? You feel okay?

Mariah: Yeah.

Abby: I hope you’re okay.

Victor: My sweet love, it was a wonderful day. Very special day. Now, you get some rest, okay?

Abby: Thank you. And, nikki, thank you so much for the cupcakes. They were delicious.

Nikki: Oh, you’re very welcome. Congratulations again on your son’s baptism.

Abby: Thank you.

Victor: Bye, sweetheart.

Jack: Hey, we’re gonna head out, too.

Ashley: Yes, I will talk to you tomorrow.

Abby: Okay, yeah. I love you. Love you.

Ashley: And I love him.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: Hey, chin up. Everything’s gonna be better. Just have patience.

Abby: Yeah.

Nina: Okay, I’m just gonna be in the kitchen if you need me, alright?

Abby: Okay.

Devon: Hey, I’m gonna meet up with you in a bit. I just want to stay behind and make sure mariah’s okay.

Amanda: Oh, yeah, I totally understand.

Devon: Okay.

Amanda: Okay, let me just say goodbye to abby.

Devon: Yeah, yeah.

Amanda: I just wanted you to know that your son is precious.

Abby: Thank you so much. And I am so happy that you’re a part of his special day.

Amanda: Oh, I really appreciate you allowing me to be a part of it.

Abby: Of course.

Amanda: Have a good day.

Abby: You too.

[ Sighs ]

Devon: [ Sighs ] I’m sorry that today didn’t go the way you hoped.

Abby: Oh, it’s no one’s fault. I mean, mariah can’t help the way that she feels. But I really feel like I have done everything to try to make things better for her.

Devon: I know you have, and i know you’re worried about her. I am, too.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Um…

Devon: What’s going on?

Mariah: Tessa and I are moving out. We’ll back for the rest of our stuff at another time. And I’m gonna keep pumping and storing milk so that it’s available for the baby whenever you need it. I can see that this is a shock. And I’m really sorry, I just… I can’t stay here anymore. Is now a good time for a flare-up?

Nikki: You were quiet driving home.

Victor: Yeah. You know why? I just can’t help being concerned about abby standing alone at the baptism. Where the hell is her husband?

Nikki: I know we’re all anxious for him to return.

Victor: I mean, she does everything alone, poor girl.

Nikki: And has risen to the occasion beautifully.

Victor: Yeah, she has, but nevertheless, it can’t be easy for her. That are being brought up now.

Jack: But you’re also feeling uneasy about how all of this is going to affect abby and your new grandchild.

Abby: I am not upset about the party. I’m really not, and, well, you and tessa, you agreed to live here for a few months, at least. I mean, you’re — you’re part of our family. And as far as I’m concerned, nothing has changed.

Mariah: For you. Nothing’s changed for you. I told myself that I could do this, that I was gonna be the best surrogate. Be a part of the baby chancellor crew, and I tried. I wanted so badly to make your dream come true. A dream that I had never even allowed myself to dream. But then I gave — I gave birth to that baby, and just… everything changed. I changed.

Abby: Okay. Look, I was just talking to devon about this. I mean, there are a lot of emotions going around here, and, um… look, I want to help you. Look, we want to help you. We want to make it better. I mean, I am forever grateful to you.

Devon: Yes.

Abby: Anything you need, i can do. I’ll do it.

Mariah: I know, I know. I know that, abby. You say it constantly. But there is nothing that you can do that’s gonna make this easier for me.

Abby: Then what would?

Mariah: I was the one who carried that child. And I was the one who talked to him while he was still inside me, and I told him and promised him that I was gonna keep him safe. And I am not saying any of this to hurt you. That is the last thing that i want to do, but I cannot stay here and pretend that this isn’t killing me. Not anymore. I just — I can’T. I can’t step back and watch — watch you… I know that this what we agreed to. I know that this is how it’s supposed to be, but I cannot be here day in and day out because it hurts so bad. It physically hurts because, as crazy as this sounds, all I want to do is be his mother. I want to be the one to hold him and to feed him and to quiet him when he cries. It’s bowie. That’s my bowie.

[ Crying ]

[ Exhales sharply ]

[ Sniffles ] Which is why I can’t stay here anymore. I order my groceries online now.

Jack: Since she became jabot’s new marketing director, I’ve gotten to know mariah pretty well. She’s grown professionally and personally, and this was a truly selfless act on her part to carry this child.

Ashley: Jack, nobody’s debating that.

Jack: I’m saying this as much for myself as for you. Look, stitch put her through hell, but it’s gonna take some time, and she’s not just abby’s friend, she’s not just her surrogate. Since that little boy came into this world, she became part of this family. And looking after family, even when it’s challenging —

Ashley: Yes, I know. Abby’s been brought up to do just that, jack. That’s what we abbotts always do.

Victor: Abby has a new baby and an absent father. She doesn’t need to take care of mariah on top of that.

Nikki: I know that concerns you.

Victor: I just don’t like the fact that mariah is gonna be living in that same household. She’s emotionally very unstable. Who knows what’ll happen? It’s not good for either abby or the child.

Nikki: A child that mariah brought into this world.

Victor: Yeah, under very difficult circumstances, and obviously mariah is very traumatized by it.

Nikki: Well, darling, you were just speaking about the strength that abby has shown. If she could muster up just a little bit more strength and offer a caring hand to mariah, I mean, I can’t think of anything that would be more healing.

Victor: I love you.

Nikki: I love you.

Abby: Everything you said, I understand. I am — I’m so sorry that you’re going through this.

Mariah: Do you mind if I — if I say goodbye to dominic?

Abby: Sure, yeah, absolutely. Take all the time you need.

Mariah: [ Sniffles ] Hi. Okay, come here. We’re gonna go up. Yeah, that’s a good boy. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

[ Sniffles ] Okay, come here. Hi, buddy.

[ Sniffles ] Hi, bowie. I have to say goodbye now. Okay?

[ Sniffles ] But you and me, we are always gonna be connected. We’re always gonna have a special bond like nobody else. And I know that there is gonna come a time when I’m stronger and I’m a little more together, and then I can come over here. I could be a part of your life and watch you grow. I need to keep my distance for now. As much as it kills me, as much as it breaks my heart, so I can get to that place. My bowie.

[ Sniffles ] Oh, my bowie. I love you so, so much.

Next week on

“the young and the restless”…

Devon: I was hoping, since you were planning on putting some roots down here, I don’t know, maybe you’d want to move in here with me.

Mariah: I’m not saying it’s gonna be easy, but it is a path forward, the right one. I think we should have a baby of our own.

Ashland: $3 million.

Gaines: By the end of the day, and then I’ll be out of your life and you can die knowing that your secret is safe.

Victoria: So, you want to know how I’m dealing with ashland’s history? Well, I hardly think that’s an issue warranting a house call.

Nick: You know, if phyllis told me about some deep, dark secret that she was keeping from me and the rest of the world, i would have a problem with that.

Victoria: It really wouldn’t be that surprising. I mean, phyllis.

Nick: How are you not more bothered by this?

Victoria: Because nothing that ashland shared with our family is news to me, so I am definitely not in a state of shock. I should ask you how you’re feeling. I thought you were good with this big family discussion we had.

Nick: It was one revelation after another. I mean, he starts with the mysterious death of his mentor, and then the unexplained access to this fortune that allowed him to get his career started. And then he tells us that he literally erased his past and became somebody else. I mean, it’s a lot to digest, vick, but I’m not the one who’s marrying him.

Victoria: Well, I don’t love him any less, if that’s what you’re asking. And nothing and no one is gonna change that.

Lily: I mean, billy, ask yourself, if ashland were with anyone other than victoria, would you be this relentless? Would you care this much?

Ashland: I can answer that. No, he wouldn’t care a bit.

Billy: Don’t pretend to try and understand my motives.

Ashland: I’m sure your partner has brought you up to speed on what happened earlier.

Lily: Yes, he did.

Ashland: If it would be alright with you, I would like to spend a minute in private with billy, please.

Lily: Well, I have a meeting in the conference room, so you can use my office — if you both can be civil.

Billy: Oh, I will if he will.

Lily: And just remember, please, at the end of the day, what really matters here is that you both care about victoria and want what’s best for her.

Ashland: That’s a smart woman. You should listen to her. Victoria’s best interests should come first. And that’s why I told my story earlier, because I wanted to take the pressure off of victoria, to let those that are most important and that matter most to her, let them know that there’s no reason for them to worry about my past. I told the newmans everything there is to know. And you, as the father of her children, you were included, as a courtesy. Now, I would think you might want to reciprocate that courtesy and back off. Stop digging where you have no business digging.

Billy: I’m aware that you don’t hear this word very often — no. It’s not gonna happen. I’m not gonna do that because i am certain there’s a whole hell of a lot more to learn about you.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone rings ]

Sharon: Hi, adam.

Adam: Hey, um…I’m about to break the news to connor, and, um, I’m a little nervous.

Sharon: Everything’s gonna be fine. Just keep it simple.

Adam: Right.

Sharon: And be direct.

Adam: Open and honest, got it.

Sharon: But if you need more support, I am here, but you know what? Everything is gonna be fine, okay? Good luck.

Adam: Alright, thanks. I’m gonna need it. What you got there?

Connor: Apples and carrots to feed the horses. And a cookie for me.

Adam: Nice.

Connor: Ready to hit the stables?

Adam: Uh, after we talk about some things. Why don’t you come sit with me?

Connor: It’s about mom, isn’t it?

Adam: Yes, it is.

Victor: Hey, doc.

Nate: Victor.

Victor: How are you?

Nate: Always a pleasure.

Victor: Yeah.

[ Cellphone vibrates ] You know, there ought to be a special place in hell for people who cancel appointments at the last minute. Damn it.

Nate: Oh, wow, would’ve been nice if you were informed before you came here.

Victor: Yeah. Well, it’s not a total waste of time. I ran into you, so there’s something I’d like to discuss with you. Please have a seat. Pain hits fast.

Adam: I wanted to talk to you today because I think that you are old enough to understand some things.

Connor: Like what?

Adam: Your mom and I, we’re not gonna be living together when she comes back to genoa city.

Connor: I thought something was wrong for a while, but i didn’t think it was this bad. Are you sure you can’t work it out? Maybe if you talk to mom some more and spend time together.

Adam: Yeah, I’m sorry, connor. It’s not gonna change anything.

Connor: Is it my fault? Did I do something wrong?

Adam: No, no, no, not at all. Okay? We are so proud of you and we’re still gonna love you just as much as we did when we were together.

Connor: Then why?

Adam: Sometimes people grow apart even when they try not to.

Connor: Then try harder! You can’t just give up on people. You weren’t around when I was little, for years. When you came back, you promised we’d always be together.

Adam: I know I did.

Connor: So you lied?

Adam: Look, some promises, connor, are just impossible to keep, and it’s — it’s not that simple.

Connor: You say I have to keep my promises, but you get to break yours? Why?

Adam: Connor, calm down, okay? Just listen to me.

Connor: Why should I?

Adam: [ Sighs ] You know what? Why don’t we get out of here, huh?

Connor: And go where?

Adam: We’ll go see a friend, and she will help us talk all about this.

Victor: I’ve got to say, my wife has the midas touch when it comes to convincing people to donate money to her favorite charities. In this case, the hospital, you know? I mean, I don’t know how she does it, must be her charm, her smile. You know that the new wing of the hospital will be equipped with the most modern surgical equipment.

Nate: Oh, well, she’s phenomenal. You know, between her connections and experience, I am floored. I have a lot to learn.

Victor: So I understand that you got ashland locke to donate some money, as well. What’s your impression of him?

Nate: Uh, you know what? We actually struck up a friendship.

Victor: Huh.

Nate: He’s even extended an invitation to me and elena to attend his wedding.

Victor: How nice is that?

Nate: Yeah, well, we’re looking forward to celebrating with the happy couple.

Victor: Yeah.

Nate: You know, the more i learn about ashland, the more i like him, especially now that i have more of a sense of the man behind the myth.

Victor: What’s your take on him?

Nate: Well, you know, i respect the grace he’s shown in the way he’s chosen to handle his illness, as well as its treatment.

Victor: Now, I understand that in spite of the treatment, his condition is terminal.

Nate: Well, I don’t know the details of his case, but the survival rate is very low.

Victor: Ooh.

Nate: With luck, he’ll be able to celebrate his one-year anniversary.

Victor: Really?

Nate: And I’m sure he’s willing to fight for that. Love is a very powerful motivator.

Victor: Yeah, it certainly is, isn’t it?

Nate: I wish victoria and ashland the best for however long they have together.

Victor: Yeah. So do I.

Nick: Look, nobody expects you to love your fiancé any less, but I am curious — did ashland’s story make you change your perspective in any way?

Victoria: Of course it has. How could it not? It’s made me admire him even more. I mean, to carry around these awful memories of an abusive and cruel father, it had to have been just unbearable, nicholas, and somehow, he managed to persevere and to thrive. He refused to let what had happened to him in the past define who he could be in the future, and I’m not just talking about his professional success, I’m talking about how he overcame the cycle of violence and he became this wonderful father to harrison.

Nick: Okay, he made a better life for himself. Good for him. But don’t you think it’s even just a little bit weird that he won’t tell you what his real name is? You know, the person he was before he became ashland locke?

Victoria: No. Not really.

Nick: Look, it’s my experience in life that, when there’s a secret, it usually leads to other secrets.

Victoria: Oh, come on, nicholas. Ashland just revealed something so private and personal today, and that’s still not enough for you.

Nick: No, it’s not.

Victoria: In fact, it’s probably made you more suspicious. You know what, nicholas? I have enough of a headache worrying about ashland tracking down billy and persuading him to back off.

Nick: Well, I didn’t come here to upset you.

Victoria: Good! That’s great. So if you really mean that, you will turn around and walk out, and we can pretend like this conversation never happened.

Billy: Your reluctance to come totally clean leads me to one conclusion — you’re hiding something. Something that could hurt victoria and, most importantly, my children.

Ashland: Whoa, whoa, whoa, there’s no logical reason for you to think that, not a shred of evidence to support your theory.

Billy: Call it intuition. I got a gut feeling. Now, you would’ve thought maybe that morsel of a story would’ve satisfied our curiosity, but it didn’t, not for me. It actually backfired, and it whet my appetite more.

Ashland: You’re wasting your time. All you are going to accomplish is causing more friction. Everyone has secrets they’d prefer stay buried. And how dare you presume to appoint yourself arbiter of what should or shouldn’t be revealed in another person’s life or past.

Billy: No, you’re right. No, whatever you fear most about your past, I guarantee, it’ll come back to bite you.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Or worse, cause collateral damage to innocent bystanders.

Ashland: Ah. Look at you, painting yourself out to be some sort of savior and me as the villain.

Billy: But you are, aren’t you? I mean, that’s the reputation you’ve cultivated your entire career.

Ashland: I certainly can’t deny that. The truth is, you definitely do not want me for an enemy.

Life…

Sharon: Anybody want some pink lemonade?

Adam: No, thanks.

Sharon: Do you mind if I join you? I heard that you got some difficult news today, connor.

Connor: You told her?

Adam: Sharon has helped you deal with issues in the past, and I was hoping that she would be able to help you again.

Sharon: You know, I’d like to try, at least — I mean, if you’re comfortable with it. Maybe I could help you and your dad just talk and, you know, say everything that you want to say and hear each other.

Connor: Can I ask something?

Adam: Of course. Anything.

Connor: Why do you always call her when there’s a problem?

Adam: [ Sighs ] Well, sharon is not only a friend, she is actually trained to deal with situations like this.

Connor: Hmm. I’ll bet there are lots of people trained to do what she does. Right?

Sharon: That’s true.

Connor: But dad chooses you over and over again. I bet mom wouldn’t like this, knowing we’re all together.

Adam: Why would you say that?

Connor: I heard mom talking to grandma about you and sharon. And I want to know what’s going on with the two of you. Is sharon the reason you and mom are breaking up?

Billy: What do you think your fiancée would say about you threatening me like that? Especially after you claim you’ve got nothing else of consequence to hide.

Ashland: I have no doubt that she would continue to stand by my side because victoria understands me and she respects what I’ve endured and what I’ve done to change my life, and she knows why.

Billy: Are you sure about that last part?

Ashland: You know, you might want to be more concerned with your relationship with victoria than with me, unless you want to completely alienate her, because you are well on your way, my friend.

Billy: Well, I’ll muddle my way through somehow. I always do.

Ashland: You know, I can only imagine how thrilled lily must be with you spending so much energy trying to undermine your ex’s engagement.

Billy: You leave lily out of this. This is between me and you.

Ashland: Doesn’t feel good when it hits close to home, huh? So why don’t you listen to me. You continue to dig into my past and invade my privacy — that will ultimately prove to be a futile endeavor. I think it would behoove you to keep both of your eyes open to the realities of the present and let go of the rest.

Billy: Or what? What could you possibly do to stop me?

Ashland: You don’t want to find out.

Nick: I’m not going anywhere because we’re not through. I don’t have an agenda here, and I truly want to believe that ashland doesn’t have any deep, dark secrets that are gonna come back and haunt your relationship.

Victoria: Well, just leave me alone. I can take care of myself.

Nick: Look, with ashland’s diagnosis, you’re gonna have some rough days ahead and you’re gonna want to hang on to as much love as you can for as long as you can, and I get that, and i want that for you.

Victoria: Thank you.

Nick: But something about this isn’t right. And I’m your brother, and that means I get to worry about you because that’s my job.

Victoria: I know, nicholas. I know that. I know this is all coming from a very good place.

Nick: It is, and for billy, too. I know that’s hard to believe ’cause he gets all loud and aggressive, but I know he cares about you. So with me and billy and mom and dad, we just want you to be treated the way you’re supposed to be treated by this man that you’re planning to marry. I hope you know that.

Victoria: Of course I do.

Nick: Now, mom and dad, they may have heard everything they need to hear from ashland to set their minds at ease, but I’m just not there. I do not understand why ashland hasn’t revealed everything about his past. I mean, especially to you, and if you’re being honest with yourself, you’d ask the same questions. “What is it ashland’s not telling me and why?” Vick, come on, it’s me. Talk to me. Like many people with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis

Victoria: Alright. Maybe I have caught myself wondering if I should know more about ashland’s past.

[ Sighs ] If maybe there’s another shoe that’s gonna drop.

Nick: That’s not surprising after everything you’ve heard.

Victoria: I just hate feeling this way. I mean, why should it matter what happened decades ago? It doesn’t matter to me who ashland was. I fell in love with who he is. And, nick, I know him, in a way that none of you do. I know the man behind the name.

Nick: But you can’t be sure about that.

Victoria: Well, one thing that I can be sure of beyond a shadow of a doubt is that i blame all of you, especially billy, for inserting yourselves into my relationship and causing all of this doubt and distrust.

Nick: Alright, look, this isn’t anyone else’s fault, alright? You’re smart and you are strong willed, and nobody’s gonna influence your thinking. If you have doubts about this, it’s because you too must feel like there’s more to the story than locke’s admitting.

Victoria: You’re right. I just — I fought it because it felt like such a betrayal to the love that ashland and I share, but I do have some questions. I have so many questions.

Ashland: Could I get a sparkling water when you have a chance? Thank you.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Nate.

Nate: Hey. Don’t mean to overstep, but is everything okay?

Ashland: Oh, I’m fine. It’s just been a long and trying day. I had to talk about some things from my past with victoria’s family in one of those “full disclosure from the groom” kind of things. Old memories can be painful.

Nate: Sorry you had to go through that.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] In-laws. What are you gonna do?

Nate: I hear you. Well, I maybe have some news that’ll lift your spirits a bit.

Ashland: Oh?

Nate: I’ve been thinking about your request that I be your best man. And I’d be honored to accept.

Ashland: The honor is all mine. Thank you.

Adam: What happened between me and your mom is complicated. And I’m not gonna get into all the details, but I will answer your question honestly because i think you deserve that and i think that you are old enough to understand.

Connor: Okay, so tell me about you and sharon.

Adam: Sharon and I did have a romantic relationship years ago, but now we are just friends, and there have been times that your mother has struggled with that. But sharon is not the reason that your mom and I are not together anymore.

Connor: I don’t believe you. If that was true, why was mom talking about you two? It’s because you hurt her, didn’t you? She had a stroke and she needed you, but you weren’t there the way you should’ve been. Because of you, sharon.

Adam: Okay, alright. Connor, let’s just take a breath, okay?

Connor: No, you broke mom’s heart, both of you.

Adam: Connor, sto– connor, we’re not done here.

Connor: I want to be by myself. Just leave me alone.

Adam: Alright, I will give you a few minutes to cool down, but we are not done talking.

Sharon: I’m sorry.

Adam: Connor! Connor, where are you going? Connor!

If you have postmenopausal

“The young and the restless”

Connor: [ Panting ]

Sally: Has anyone ever told you that you look like adam newman? I recognize you from a picture from adam’s office. Is there any chance your name is connor newman? I’m sally spectra. I work with your dad at newman media.

Connor: Oh, yeah. I’ve heard him mention your name.

Sally: You out here all alone? Does your dad know? Okay. Won’t push. Do you mind if I take a break from my run and sit here for a while?

Nick: You have questions about ashland. Let’s start there.

Victoria: You know, nicholas, I’m probably just getting cold feet.

Nick: Did you feel that way before the merger of newman and locke?

Victoria: No, no, because we had done our due diligence.

Nick: Which is something you can’t do with the man himself because he keeps everything under wraps.

Victoria: Nicholas, look, i really do appreciate your concern, but —

Nick: Vick, come on, let me help you.

Victoria: This conversation is over, and I would really appreciate it if you just kept this between us. I don’t want you repeating or acting on anything I told you. Promise me.

Ashland: Nick, I assume you’re here to follow up with victoria about what I told you about my history.

Nick: I had more questions for her.

Ashland: Alright, well, I’m gonna give you a little warning, like I gave billy. My past is nobody’s business but my own. Stay out of my life, okay? I shared what I did today with everyone to put an end to this crap.

Nick: I think you should calm down.

Victoria: Look, ashland has every right to defend himself. He shouldn’t have been put in this position in the first place. I mean, we’re gonna be family.

Nick: That’s what family does. We check on each other. I came over here ’cause I wanted to talk to you. I didn’t hurl any accusations. I didn’t make any demands. I was calm, unlike ashland. In fact, the person in this room who I think seems the most concerned about his past is ashland.

Billy: [ Sighs ] Nothing. Another dead end, which, to me, is very suspicious. It’s almost as if ashland didn’t exist until he met the woman that later became his mentor.

Lily: And once again, there could be a reason for that.

Billy: I really don’t see how it’s possible for anyone in this day and age to basically have no record of the first 20 years of their life, unless they are deliberately hiding it. Or maybe he’s destroyed those records.

Lily: Right, another hypothesis with nothing to back it up.

Billy: Yeah. Believe me. It’s frustrating as hell.

Lily: You’re not the only one here who is frustrated. You need to look at why this matters so much to you. Who cares if ashland is hiding where he came from?

Billy: Who cares? If that’s true, the man is a lie. Everything he’s done in his life is a lie, his whole entire empire. That is a big story, a story that people want to hear. Most importantly, victoria deserves to know that. I don’t need any more motivation than that. I’m not out to embarrass locke. I’m not out to cause him pain. I’m simply looking for the truth. And if it’s not news-worthy, then we don’t run it.

Lily: Which brings me to my next issue. I don’t think that your interest in this story is professional.

Billy: Okay, I see where you’re going, and I don’t like it.

Lily: If anyone but victoria were with ashland, would you care this much? How’d it go with ashland?

Billy: Well, I guess you could say it was an eye-opening encounter.

Lily: Details.

Billy: I think he came here to shut me down. And I think he knows that’s not gonna happen. The way he was acting gave me all new clarity.

Lily: Clarity about what?

Billy: He’s terrified that this is just the beginning, that whatever he’s hiding is about to be exposed.

Lily: Well, it’s hard to imagine a man like locke terrified of anything.

Billy: He threatened me.

Lily: Really?

Billy: Not directly, but his intention was clear, which means he’s desperate. Which means I’m onto something. This is the sound of an asthma attack…

Ashland: I’m so sorry that i stormed in like that and attacked your brother. He didn’t deserve that, and you certainly deserved better from me.

Victoria: I assume that you were on edge after your talk with billy. I warned you it wouldn’t go well.

Ashland: He did everything you predicted he would.

Victoria: Ashland.

Ashland: Believe me, I got my point across, too.

Lily: Billy, this is serious.

Billy: Yeah, I’ll be fine.

Lily: How do you know that? You don’t even know who locke really is.

Billy: I’m not afraid of him.

Lily: Well, maybe you should be.

Billy: The only people I’m worried about in all of this are victoria and my kids. But it is very clear to me that he is still hiding something. You still think it’s a mistake to keep investigating him?

Lily: Look, at this point, i can’t discount your suspicions, okay? Clearly, this goes beyond locke trying to keep his life private or not wanting to relive some past trauma. I understand why you want to continue the investigation, so I’m not going to ask you to stop.

Billy: But you want me to.

Nick: Hey, dad.

Victor: Hey, my boy. What brings you back here?

Nick: I wanted to ask you something.

Victor: Alright, go ahead.

Nick: When you said you heard enough from locke and that you were cool with his relationship with victoria, did you mean that or was it all for show?

Sharon: Connor looks good. He looks relaxed.

Adam: Yeah.

Sharon: Listen, I — I don’t think it’s best that I approach him, given his current mind-set.

Adam: Yeah, you’re probably right. Um…but thank you for all the help, sharon.

Sharon: Go talk to your son.

Adam: Connor, there you are. I see you met sally.

Connor: Yeah.

Adam: Thank you for hanging out with him.

Sally: He’s good company. He was telling me all about lacrosse. I learned a lot.

Adam: Yeah, he’s becoming a real expert on the sport.

Sally: I was just getting around to asking connor what was bugging him. Seems like something’s on his mind.

Adam: Well, sometimes bad news is hard to hear.

Sally: I get it. Sometimes you just want to blame the person who gave you the bad news when it’s not their fault at all.

Connor: Did that happen to you?

Sally: Can you keep a secret? This one time, I went to this really fancy party. I had this incredible dress. My hair looking flawless. My point is, I made somebody so mad at me that they dumped a whole bucket of ice on my head.

Connor: Really?

Sally: Yes, I was drenched in front of everyone.

Connor: You were?

Sally: Completely. My point is, I survived. And you will, too.

[ “The addams family” theme playing ]

Adam: Connor, you gave me a scare. You can’t ever do that again.

Connor: Sorry.

Adam: Look, I know this is hard for you, but we’re gonna work it all out.

Connor: I want to go home and call mom.

Adam: Okay. Okay, let’s do that. Just give me a second to talk to sally first, alright? Thank you for letting me know where he was and staying with him.

Sally: Yeah, no problem. He’s a cool kid. Look, I know this is none of my business, so I won’t bug you with questions.

Adam: Well, thank you.

Sally: But…if there’s anything I can do to help, I’m around.

Adam: Well, I appreciate that, but it’s a private family matter.

Sally: Say no more. See you back at the office.

Victor: To be frank with you, I feel that ashland locke is the kind of man who carries more than his share of pain, you know? As I told your mom, I almost feel kind of sorry for the guy.

Nick: But you don’t think he told us the whole truth, right?

Victor: No, of course not. But does that mean that I’m gonna unearth everything about his past? No.

Nick: Why does he get a pass?

Victor: Well, son, I’m partly moved to support the relationship with your sister is because I think he loves her. And I think it’s reciprocal.

Nick: Well, I’m not questioning his feelings for victoria. I’m questioning the holes in his origin story and how it affects her.

Victor: Have you spoken with her?

Nick: Yeah, I went by her place, and, you know, talked to her, just to kind of see how she took the news. She didn’t come out and say it, but I know she’s not as okay with the situation as she’s making it seem. Then ashland shows up and sees me there. He didn’t like that.

Victor: Really?

Nick: I don’t know why he’s got to keep his birth name a secret, but whatever the reason is, it’s got to be huge for him to want to make the man he once was disappear.

Victor: You just can’t let it go, can you?

Nick: I will never trust locke, not until I know the truth.

Ashland: I don’t want to spend time talking about billy or nick or anyone. I only want to think about you. And after this interminable day, how are you doing?

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Victoria: Ashland?

Ashland: Oh, it’s a text from nate. He’s agreed to be my best man.

Victoria: Oh, that’s wonderful.

Ashland: It’s nice to have good news for a change.

Lily: Billy, look, I am in this with you, okay? But just like you’re worried about victoria and the kids, I’m worried about you.

Billy: I can handle him.

Lily: Are you forgetting the stories about how locke has retaliated against people over the years? Look what happened with jabot when he found out that kyle had an affair with tara. I mean, he could’ve brought that company to its knees.

Billy: Lily, that is his true character, which means we have to keep investigating him.

Lily: Okay, we don’t know how he’s going to retaliate against you by you trying to dig up a past that he’s trying to keep buried. He could take this more personally than tara cheating on him. Who knows how he’ll respond when he’s been crossed?

Billy: I have a feeling we’re gonna find out.

Elena: Hey.

Lily: Hey.

Elena: Sorry I’m late.

Lily: Oh, I’m sure you have a lame excuse, like, you know, you were saving lives.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, it was a tough shift, emotionally and physically. I am wiped out.

Lily: Oh, we could’ve postponed the meeting until you had a chance to get some rest.

Elena: No, no, actually, this meeting is what got me through hours at the hospital. I’m really excited about askmdnow. I’ve been jotting down notes in my phone.

Nate: Oh, no, no, I just, um — I want Moses to find something that makes him happy. And it looks like that’s gonna be music. And you. I hear you two have a big date coming up.

Faith: You heard about that?

Nate: Mm-hmm, he’s been talking about it. Thank you.

Faith: Oh, yeah, it should be fun. Did he tell you what he had planned?

Nate: Uh, he did.

Faith: It’s gonna be great. I’m really looking forward to going to that place. You know, the place.

Nate: Yeah, that’s not gonna work. Moses told me it was a surprise. You’re getting nothing from me.

Faith: I had to try.

Ashland: So I left home and my abusive father. I cut all ties and I never looked back. At the time, I didn’t know if my dad would be glad to get rid of me or that he was gonna come after me. But I felt it prudent to take necessary precautions, so i changed my name, I moved around a lot, and I invented a new history for myself. I imagined that I had a very calm and loving and stable environment because that’s all i ever wanted. I mean, that’s all we ever want from our childhood, right? And I repeated this new story so many times it eventually felt real. Ian and mary locke were — were nurturing and supportive parents who would be so proud of what i had accomplished, if only they hadn’t passed away so tragically young.

Victoria: Ashland, are you okay?

Ashland: I’m fine. I’m fine. It’s just a little difficult. I haven’t told this story to anyone about my past before.

Victoria: His body is under a tremendous amount of stress right now. Dredging up these painful things, it’s very difficult for ashland. Surely everyone here, especially my parents, understand what it’s like trying to get away from a father who has failed you.

Nikki: Yes, of course we do.

Victor: Ashland, your story is not dissimilar to mine. Hope you understand why we had to check your background, hmm? And I hope you also understand why I am — as a father who grew up without parents — am so protective of my children and especially my daughter.

Ashland: I understand why her family is so insistent that she is in good hands.

Victoria: So now that you all know the whole story, I hope that will put an end to your questions — some of which have bordered on harassment.

Billy: Well, it’s a touching story. It really is, but it’s not exactly the whole truth, is it? I mean, we still don’t know how —

Victoria: You know, this is not a press conference, billy. Ashland is not being interrogated here. He’s sharing something painful about his past with us, not because he has to, but because he wants to put our minds at ease.

Nick: And because his original story doesn’t hold up.

Victoria: But he told you —

Victor: Victoria, we appreciate ashland’s candor, alright? But we still have questions.

Elena: Hey.

Lily: Okay, well, I love the enthusiasm, but I don’t want you to burn yourself out before we even get started.

Elena: [ Scoffs ] Don’t worry. I’m fine.

Lily: Okay, ’cause I happen to be very close to the chief of surgery at memorial, and I don’t think he’d be very happy if i run one of his best doctors into the ground.

Elena: Oh, it’s okay. I’m just a little tired, but that’s what they invented coffee for, right?

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Moses: Yes, mom. I know. Yeah, I’ll tell him. Love you, too.

[ Chuckles ]

Devon: Was that sofia?

Moses: Yeah, she said to say hello.

Devon: Tell her “what’s up.” You look like you got some good news.

Moses: The best. She said I could stay in genoa city.

Devon: She did? Nice, man!

Moses: At first, I was a little bit worried that she’d haul me back to new york because she was upset that I changed my mind about being a doctor.

Devon: Yeah.

Moses: But [Chuckles] It’s fine.

Devon: Nice, dude. Good for you, man.

Moses: Yeah. She even was a little excited that I’m gonna follow dad’s footsteps working at hamilton-winters. She said she always thought i had a good head for business.

Devon: Nice. Good head for business.

Moses: Yeah.

Devon: Alright. So you tell her that you’re gonna be focusing on the music side of the business?

Moses: Um, you know, that didn’t really come up.

Devon: Yeah, that’s what i thought.

Nikki: I agree with your father. Ashland revealed a very painful chapter of his life, but he had to have known that it would lead to more questions.

Ashland: Well, I assure you all that I am here to answer any question. I’m willing to subject myself to your scrutiny for victoria’s sake. And you don’t have to run interference for me. I can handle this. You do so much for me. Just let me do this one thing for you.

Victoria: Okay. The floor is all yours.

Ashland: So what is it that you would like to know?

Billy: Well, I think you should probably start —

Victor: Billy boy, this is my house. I ask the questions, alright? So, ashland, what happened to your parents?

Find your rhythm.

Moses: Here’s the thing.

Devon: Mm.

Moses: I didn’t specifically mention my interest in the music business to mom because it just wasn’t intentional.

Devon: Oh. So you accidentally didn’t tell her?

Moses: Yeah.

Devon: Uh-huh. That was our agreement, that you have to level with her about it.

Moses: I-I know. I will. Eventually. She got on a roll and she was just so excited by the fact that I got an internship at hamilton-winters. Means a lot to her, the fact that neil’s sons are working together at the same business that bears his name. She got choked up just talking about it.

Devon: Well, I mean, I’m sure she did. I understand that.

Moses: You do?

Devon: Of course. I feel the same way when I think about you working for the family business. It’s where you belong.

Moses: Thanks. And I just couldn’t bring myself to tell her that I’d be spending more time in the recording studio than looking at spreadsheets.

Devon: Mm.

Moses: Didn’t want to disappoint her.

Devon: Right.

Moses: You mad?

Devon: Uh, no, I’m not mad. I understand why you wouldn’t want to kill the mood.

Moses: Exactly. Yep.

Devon: Why you’d want to quit while you’re ahead.

Moses: No, unh-unh. I didn’t wimp out.

Devon: Uh-huh.

Moses: I swear. Okay, when the time is right, I’ll tell her. I just want to get some experience so I can talk to her about the specific stuff I’ve learned, and I know she’ll approve.

Devon: Okay. Alright, well, I think the odds are in your favor, and no matter what you end up choosing, neil would be very proud of you.

Moses: Thanks, bro.

Devon: Now, why don’t you get out of here? ‘Cause I know that there’s someone that you’re dying to share this good news with, and it ain’t me.

Moses: [ Chuckles ] Alright, I’ll see you, man.

Devon: Alright, see ya.

Faith: Dr. Hastings.

Nate: Hey, faith. How’s my all-time favorite patient doing?

Faith: Never better. My new kidney is crushing it.

Nate: Oh, good to hear.

Faith: Latte with almond milk?

Nate: Am I that predictable?

Faith: When it comes to coffee, yes.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Faith: If you’d like, I could whip up something new, surprise you.

Nate: No, you know what? Let’s not get too crazy. I will stick with my usual. It’s good to see you doing well and hard at work.

Faith: Yeah, I’ve almost saved up enough money to pay back the fine from when i wrecked my grandpa’s truck.

Nate: Good for you. I’m sure your parents are pleased that you followed through with that.

Faith: Yeah, I had to prove to them that I’ve learned from my mistakes and that I’m really going to change. And I kind of feel like I owe it to you and everyone else who helped save me to make good use of my second chance.

Nate: Well, it’s clear you’re making the most of it. And nick and sharon must be impressed enough that they eased up on your restrictions. I hear you’ve been spending a lot of time with moses.

Faith: Yeah, I don’t think i could’ve turned things around without him. He’s, like, the best possible influence and the best…friend. Yeah, he’s really just all-around the best.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] No arguments from me.

Faith: I really hope that you’re not disappointed that he decided that he didn’t want to be a doctor.

[ Chuckles ]

Ashland: When I shut the door to my past, it was meant to be permanent. I was angry. For my father, obviously, but also for my mother. I was angry at her for not protecting me, for making excuses for that man, and for her own choices. She could stand there and look at me, 90 pounds of her, with a black eye and a split lip, and blame me for provoking him. That’s why I cut all ties. I severed as fast as I could. I wanted nothing to do with them. And I lost track of them. I avoided going to my hometown or anyone that came from there.

Billy: And they never reached out to you? Never once, not even when you made it big?

Ashland: No, billy. My mother and father, we didn’t run in the same circles, you see. They didn’t really keep up with the latest happenings on wall street, what was going on in the media world. Because even if they did, they probably wouldn’t have recognized me because I wasn’t the same scared, scrawny kid.

Victor: Well, ashland, once you were successful, did you have the desire to let them know about it, maybe even rub their noses in it?

Ashland: Well, the thought crossed my mind more than once, and then it was always followed up by another thought. They didn’t deserve any part of the success that I had earned in spite of them.

Nick: And you never looked into what became of them?

Ashland: I didn’t care. But when I got older and i started to understand the dynamics of abuse, I wanted to reach out to my mother. I wanted to let her know that i understood that she was scared and that she felt as helpless as I did. I wanted to forgive her. But it was too late ’cause she had died a few years before, as had my father.

Nikki: I’m sorry you never got the chance to reconcile with her.

Billy: If you did want to pay respect, where would you go do that? Are they buried somewhere? What’s the name on their headstone? You didn’t actually tell us their name. In fact, you haven’t told us your real name either.

Ashland: My god, you’re right. I didn’T. And I’m not going to.

Elena: This is exactly what i needed — just a jolt of energy.

Lily: Good.

Elena: Is that a new bracelet?

Lily: Yes, actually, it is.

Elena: Mm, I love it. From billy?

Lily: No, it’s from mattie. It was a thank-you gift for helping move her in to her new apartment in california.

Elena: Oh, she has great taste.

Lily: Yeah, thanks.

Elena: Is she all settled in?

Lily: She is, yeah, but, i don’t know, I worry about her. She’s like you, she’s an overachiever. And she’s at stanford, and there’s a lot of opportunities for her, so she kind of feels like she has to take advantage of all of them, you know?

Elena: Yeah, I totally get that. It’s so hard to say no.

Lily: I know. I knew you’d understand. But she’s very driven and focused, but also very shy, so she doesn’t really go out, you know? She doesn’t go to any parties.

Elena: I feel like that’s what all college students tell their parents.

Lily: No, I know, I know, but I believe her, I do.

Elena: Well, what about her academics? Is she happy with those?

Lily: Uh, yeah, but she has to pick a major soon, so I think that’s really stressful for her.

Elena: Huh. I remember hearing that she was thinking about law school. Is that still where her head’s at?

Lily: Well, I think that’s because I was facing charges, ’cause she also wanted to be a doctor as well, and either of those, I mean, you can pretty much, you know, get your undergrad in anything. So I think all the options for her are really overwhelming.

Elena: I remember being that age, just thinking that you have to have it all mapped out, and then you don’t realize till you’re a little older that there’s a little more flexibility with being an adult. You can kind of make it up as you go.

Lily: I know, that’s what i told her. I told her that, you know, i changed my career several times. You don’t have to have all the answers. I don’t know, I just wish she would ease up on herself and just have some fun, you know? It’s so important at that age.

Elena: Well, if you want me to talk to her about med school, just let me know. I’m available. Askmdnow is more than just a website, right?

Lily: Aww, thank you. That’s very sweet of you.

Elena: Of course. Us smart and shy girls have to look out for each other.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: As parents, i completely understand your concern that your future son-in-law’s past is so mysterious. That’s why I’m here. I felt I owed you the truth.

Nikki: But only part of it.

Ashland: Nikki, it wouldn’t serve any purpose to reveal my parents’ identities. They were miserable people and made bad choices, but I have no desire to see their names dragged through the mud.

Victor: Well, that is very generous of you. But, ashland, you have to understand, you know, our desire to know everything about your family we can. Otherwise, we don’t know you.

Victoria: You do know him, dad. He’s ashland locke. In the same exact way that you’re victor newman. You both chose to reinvent yourselves and you’ve both become wildly successful because of it.

Victor: Victoria —

Victoria: You of all people should understand.

Victor: We still have questions.

Victoria: Well, there shouldn’t be any. Ashland has lived a very public life for decades. That is track record enough for anybody. Why you need to know more painful things about his childhood, more than he’s already told you, is beyond me.

Nick: Because we don’t know anything about his early career, after he changed his name.

Ashland: Nick, you, your father, billy, and whoever else has gone over this history with a fine-tooth comb. There’s nothing illegal or nefarious here, and I feel the same way as victoria does. Enough is enough.

Billy: But it’s not. And you have an opportunity right now to tell us who you really are. Because if you don’t, I’m gonna find out anyway.

Ashland: That’s not gonna happen because I’ve taken the necessary steps to keep that information private.

Billy: Well, I think you underestimate me.

Ashland: And I think it’s the other way around. You see, to you, this story is something salacious to be put on your website as click bait, but for me, this is deeply personal and really painful. You see, billy, not all of us were fortunate enough to have john abbott for a father.

Billy: Okay, so am I supposed to feel guilty about having a loving family? Am I supposed to feel bad that i didn’t have a miserable childhood so I just let you off the hook? Is that it?

Ashland: I grew up in hell, and I’m done with it. You see, and I will be damned if I’m gonna revisit that so your sorry ass can sell some ad space.

Billy: You at least should’ve been honest with your future wife.

Victoria: Well, this is between ashland and me, billy. It’s none of your business.

Billy: So now you’re okay with your man hiding things? This is who you’re gonna lower your standards for?

Victoria: Oh, believe me, I’ve raised my standards considerably since you and i were together, and ashland makes me feel like I’m respected.

Billy: Okay, look, I’m just trying to find out who the guy really is, alright? And if you tell the truth, ashland, then there would be nothing to hide.

Victor: That’s enough. I suggest we all keep our voices down. You’re guests in the house, alright? All of you. So you will not be part of this if ashland and victoria had not invited you here. Alright? And by the way, the only reason you’re in this house is because you happen to be the father of her children. You’re not part of this family. You got that?

Billy: You telling me you’re satisfied with —

Victor: Don’t you raise your voice with a guest of ours. Is that clear?

Billy: You believe that story, victor?

Victor: No, what I believe is that we should support victoria. That’s it. That clear?

Victoria: Thank you very much. Now, I hope that we can put everything else behind us and focus on what really matters.

Here’s candice…

Moses: Hey.

Faith: Hi! Hungry? Thirsty? What can I get you?

Moses: You know, actually, i just came to see you.

Faith: Oh.

Moses: And to thank you.

Faith: For what?

Moses: Well, all the coaching. You taught me how to handle things with my mom. It paid off.

Faith: No way. She’s letting you stay?

Moses: Yeah, you guessed it.

Faith: That’s great! Oh! I’m so happy.

Moses: I’m so happy you’re happy.

Faith: Now when we go out, it’ll be an actual date and not a going-away party.

Moses: Yeah.

Faith: I was kind of dreading that.

Moses: So was I. And that’s why I haven’t scheduled anything yet. I hope you didn’t think I was blowing you off.

Faith: I knew you’d come through. And nate was just in here talking about it, so I took that as a good sign.

Moses: What? You’re telling me nate was in here blabbing about our date?

Faith: Don’t worry, I tried to pry information out of him, but he was onto me. His lips were sealed.

Moses: That’s good. I have everything lined up, so i don’t need him ruining the surprise.

Faith: This date is the kind of thing that needs things lined up?

Moses: Oh, absolutely. But I just need to make sure you’re free next weekend.

Faith: I’ll clear my calendar. But…

Moses: But what?

Faith: I don’t know if I can wait that long.

[ Chuckles ] The suspense is killing me.

Elena: It’s so different now with social media.

Lily: I know. I mean, I get in trouble with the internet, you know, when i was a kid, and it’s like I can only imagine what it’s like for them now, but —

Elena: Hey.

Lily: Hello.

Nate: Well, hello, ladies.

Elena: What a pleasant surprise.

Nate: Well, I just stopped by your place. I figured you got caught up at work.

Lily: Well, I mean, she’s still at work.

Elena: Yes, we’ve been brainstorming askmdnow.

Lily: Well, we started that way, and then we kind of got sidetracked when elena woke up. And, mr. Chief of surgery, you’re working this girl too hard. She’s probably gonna go from here to volunteer at the clinic.

Elena: I am not. I’m gonna go home and take a much-needed nap.

Lily: Well, no more double shifts for her. She’s gonna run herself into the ground.

Nate: Oh, no one wants that.

Elena: Lily, we don’t even joke about nate pulling strings for me because it wouldn’t be fair to anyone else, so if i have to work a double, I work a double.

Lily: Yeah, no, I understand. Billy and I have to also figure out that, you know, balance between personal and professional.

Elena: Yeah, but it’s a little different because you guys are co-ceos. It’s a bit trickier with nate and I because he’s my boss.

Lily: I get it, I get it, but I want you to maintain a work-life balance. Or in your case, a work-work-work-life balance because you have three jobs with your work at the clinic.

Elena: Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.

Lily: I know. Okay, well, I have to go. It was good to see you. I’ll see you later, and get some rest, okay?

Elena: I will.

Lily: Alright, bye, guys.

Nate: Bye-bye.

Elena: By the way, I wasn’t complaining about my schedule to lily. She just took it upon herself to protect me. I know if you have to schedule a double, you’re doing it because it’s absolutely necessary.

Nate: Okay, but has anyone at work been commenting about our relationship?

Elena: No, no one’s said anything directly, but there’s a feeling out there. People are a lot more careful around me. I guess it’s awkward being the boss’ girlfriend.

Nate: Well, I’m sure that’ll all go away once people see that I’m not going to abuse the power of my position.

Elena: Well, I certainly hope so.

Victoria: Come on. Sit down over there. Just sit down. You need to rest. You need to really just rest after that [Sighs] Stressful family meeting.

Ashland: Well, it was worth it. It was something that needed to happen.

Victoria: Well, I’m glad you think so. I was really impressed by the way you were able to delve into your painful childhood history. It was all for my sake. You know, I would’ve been totally fine if you refused to answer all of their questions.

Ashland: No, no, no, no, you are going to need your family’s support as we get closer to the wedding. You know, when I was younger, i might have gone with a “you and me against the world” attitude, but…I couldn’t put you in that position now.

Victoria: What do you mean?

Ashland: [ Sighs ] I’m not gonna be around forever. We know that. You family’s gonna be there for you when I’m gone, and you need them. I don’t want their attitude to be “thank god we got rid of that guy.”

Victoria: You’re so clinical about all of this.

Ashland: Well, it’s the best way for me to get through it. And it seemed as if your family was finally ready to put aside all their suspicions about my past. Now that I bared my soul.

Victoria: I think they saw you the way that I see you — strong, very resilient. Even after all of the emotional trauma that you’ve been through in your life, you still have the ability to — to feel things so deeply.

Ashland: What matters most is that they know how I feel about you.

Victoria: I think they all got that.

Ashland: Except in billy’s case, I don’t think that is going to work in our favor.

Victoria: Well, he doesn’t really matter.

Ashland: You must have realized by now that his paranoia, as far as I’m concerned, stems from his own jealousy.

Victoria: I don’t know about that.

Ashland: No, I do. He doesn’t want anyone taking his place in your life. Is now a good time for a flare-up?

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Victor: Hi, sweetheart.

Nikki: Hey.

Victor: How was your meeting?

Nikki: It was okay.

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: It was nothing that would take my mind off of victoria and ashland. But after everything we just heard, I don’t understand how you can be okay with her marrying a man we don’t even know his real name.

Victor: Yeah, well, hmm. I understand your question. I mean, he glossed over the details of his past life, i understand that, but on the whole, I was alright with it.

Nikki: You were?

Victor: Yeah, because, you know, his story seems to be similar to mine. Really, I mean, anyone who changes his identity, changes his name obviously is trying to cover up a very painful childhood. And if anyone understands that, it’s me. And, you know, he probably was bullied as a kid. They probably made fun of him because he came from nothing, poor background, so now he became a very successful businessman, almost a tycoon, and I understand how victoria would be impressed by that. I do.

Victoria: Billy is a pain. He’s not jealous. Believe me, he has no lingering romantic interest in me.

Ashland: No?

Victoria: No, no, he just — he hates it when he’s wrong. Billy is stubborn and he’s frustrating, that’s all, and i doubt that anything he heard today is gonna convince him to back off.

Ashland: Probably just the opposite.

Victoria: I don’t think that he liked being dressed down by my father either. So you are just gonna be one more thing that billy and i argue about. He’s just gonna keep turning over rocks until he finds something that he thinks proves him right yet again.

Ashland: Well, that’s the behavior of an addict.

Victoria: Yes, I know, it’s what’s driven him to gamble all of those years. Always thinking that the next bet is gonna be the winner.

Ashland: Mm-hmm. I know the type. I definitely made a mistake inviting him to the family conversation. But there’s a way to rectify that error.

Victoria: What’s that?

Ashland: I need to talk to billy one-on-one.

Billy: Which is exactly why we couldn’t find anything out, right? Right. So take the information that i gave you, keep digging, and let me know if you find anything else. Great, thanks.

Lily: Was that about ashland?

Billy: Yep.

Lily: What happened at the ranch? Sounds like you learned a lot.

Billy: Oh, I wouldn’t say that.

Lily: What do you mean?

Billy: Basically, ashland spun this whole long story about his childhood, which could be true or it could be complete garbage. Either way, I left there with more questions than answers.

Lily: So what did he tell you?

Billy: [ Sighs ] In short, ashland locke said ashland locke doesn’t exist.

Think wearing less makeup

means no need for a wipe?

Victoria: I really don’t think it’s a good idea for you to confront billy.

Ashland: My darling, I am just not accustomed to sitting around doing nothing while someone else is making a nuisance of themselves.

Victoria: Well, getting in his face is just going to encourage him. It’s just gonna be proof that he thinks you’re hiding something. You know, you’re going to leave him with the impression that he’s in control of the situation and that he’s forcing your hand.

Ashland: [ Scoffs ] I really don’t care. I just hate that you have to go through all of this crap. I mean, we’re supposed to be in the middle of planning a wedding. This is just not fair that billy is inserting himself in our life this way.

Victoria: Fine. Let’s just drop the whole thing. Let’s talk about cake design or floral arrangements or something like that. I know, let’s call nate and elena and see if they’re, you know, available to have dinner with us. Positive people who support us. Anything but wasting anymore time on billy.

Ashland: No. It was my mistake to include him earlier. I thought being courteous and polite was the way to go. Clearly, that only emboldened him. I need to correct that error and put him in his place. I promise you that billy will not walk away from this conversation feeling like he’s in control this time.

Nikki: I agree with you that ashland’s accomplishments are very impressive, but I don’t think that’s the issue. Is it really a good idea for victoria to marry a man who has not been completely transparent with her?

Victor: But, sweetheart, if victoria were here, she would say that’s none of our business. Our choice is to either approve of the marriage or not. That’s all.

Nikki: And you obviously do.

Victor: Yeah, I’m inclined to. I really am. I must say that I think he loves her and she loves him. I can sense it between the two, you know? And you must remember that he chose to go into chemotherapy so he could spend more time with her. I mean, that’s an extraordinary decision.

Nikki: I agree with you on that.

Victor: See? He values her. That’s important to me. And that certainly is very different from the last guy she was with, right?

Nikki: So the best thing about ashland to you is that he’s not billy.

Victor: You bet that helps. Billy boy abbott, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, never accomplished a damn thing. Caused more messes and asked more people to clean up for him. He’s just a ne’er-do-well. From what ashland told us today, I think, as a kid, he was more of a man than billy boy will ever be.

Lily: Wow, so ashland ran away from home, he changed his name to escape his abusive father, and never looked back. How did this story stay hidden for so long?

Billy: Because it’s a classic rags-to-riches story. Everybody loves that. It’s the american dream, so nobody looked into it, until now.

Lily: Well, I guess your instinct that locke was hiding something was right.

Billy: Ah. You gonna trust my gut feeling now?

Lily: No, ’cause I have my own instincts that tell me when you’re completely full of it.

Billy: Okay, well, fyi, my gut is telling me that there’s more to come.

Lily: Yeah, your gut and the fact that ashland never revealed his real name.

Billy: There’s a lot he’s not telling us, lily. I mean, there’s no way to know if this story about his father is even true. I will say that it resembles victor’s coming-of-age story perfectly. You should’ve saw the way victor was looking at him, like he was a long-lost son. And nikki, I mean, she had an abusive father, so I’m sure she’s buying into it, as well. Lily: So, what, you think he made this story up just to play to their sympathies? I mean, that’s pretty cynical.

Billy: All I’m saying is that I’m not taking it at face value, and we need to keep investigating.

Lily: Okay, well, think about this. What if the story is actually true? What if he did, you know, escape this nightmare childhood just to survive, and now we’re hounding him in the final moments of his life for no good reason? Your mission:

Elena: Um, I think I need to go back home and get to bed or I’m gonna fall asleep at this table.

Nate: Okay, okay. Go home, take a nap, and then we could go to a movie or grab a drink later.

Elena: I don’t think i should.

Nate: Are you turning me down because of the vibe you’re getting at work?

Elena: No, not at all. I’m just exhausted. I think I need more than a nap. I think once I put my head down on the pillow, I’m not gonna wake up until the morning.

Nate: Okay, sleeping beauty. Go get some rest. I’ll check in tomorrow, and we’ll make plans.

Elena: Thank you. I look forward to seeing you when I’m awake.

Nate: Sweet dreams.

Elena: Enjoy your lunch.

Victoria: Ashland just left, so if you have any more questions for him.

Nick: Nope. Here to see you. Just want to make sure you’re okay.

Victoria: I’m fine. Actually, I am completely annoyed at the moment.

Nick: With me?

Victoria: No, with billy. He’s acting like an entitled little brat. Yeah, I know, he owns a media company, but that does not give him carte blanche to go snooping around into people’s private lives.

Nick: You know, vick, he might be doing it for the right reasons.

Victoria: Well, ashland doesn’t think so, and that’s where he is right now. He went to find billy and to make that clear to him.

Nick: That is not gonna end well.

Victoria: Well, nick, it’s my last resort. I don’t know what else to do. I’ve tried everything to get billy to stop snooping. Maybe he needs to hear it directly from ashland. But ashland has enough going on to worry about right now.

Nick: So do you.

Victoria: I know.

Nick: Well, that’s what i came to talk about. Not billy. I just want to make sure you’re alright. I mean, it’s got to be a shock to the system to find out this guy that you love has this whole history that you don’t know anything about. How you doing with that?

Billy: There’s a lot of “ifs” in that hypothetical, and I am not harassing ashland. I am simply and discreetly looking into his past, and if there’s nothing there, then we walk away.

Lily: Really?

Billy: Yes. But that’s an easy promise for me to make because I believe that there’s more there.

Lily: Your gut again?

Billy: That’s right.

Lily: Just because ashland didn’t give you the complete story doesn’t mean there’s something more sinister going on. We have run stories about women who were fleeing abusive relationships, and they changed their identity for survival.

Billy: I understand that, but locke’s father is dead, right? So there’s no threat. Why not just tell us your real name?

Lily: Just because locke is a public figure doesn’t mean that every aspect of his life is news. I mean, his childhood should be private. I don’t want to publicly reveal the most painful moments of a dying man’s life.

Billy: I’m not out to embarrass locke. I’m not out to cause him pain. I’m simply looking for the truth, and if it’s not news-worthy, then we don’t run it.

Lily: Which brings me to my next issue. I don’t think that your interest in this story is professional.

Billy: Okay, I see where you’re going, and I don’t like it.

Lily: If anyone but victoria were with ashland, would you care this much?

Ashland: I can answer that. No, he wouldn’t care a bit.

Billy: Hey there, Nikki. Nice to see you out and about. No Victor?

Nikki: I’m just picking up a quick bite for us.

Billy: Mm. Well, I’m surprised you have time to even eat, with everything you’re juggling, your high-powered job, you’re a wife, mother, grandmother extraordinaire. You are a real superwoman.

Nikki: Just a woman, actually.

Billy: [ Chuckling ] Yeah. So, how’s the wedding plans coming?

Nikki: Please don’t pretend to care. I know you’re only hoping to find a reason to blow Victoria’s wedding out of the water

***********************

Billy: Well, Nikki, I am simply doing my job as the head of a media company, and this wedding is making headlines.

Nikki: Mm-hmm. For the right reasons — two notable people getting married, a high-society affair. But your personal agenda should not be making news. But if you hurt my daughter in the meantime, I promise you, you will regret it.

Billy: Well, threat noted. But let me be very clear. The last person I want to see hurt is Victoria. I’m actually on her side. And I’m surprised that you’re not more concerned about who Ashland Locke really is.

Nikki: I happen to trust Victoria’s judgment.

Billy: So, you’re not the least bit worried that there’s basically no documented history of the first two decades of his life? I see. Victoria didn’t share that information with you, did she?

Phyllis: Hey.

Nick: I thought that I would come to the gym and try out that new trainer you hired.

Phyllis: Oh, good, good. Tell me what you think. Although you could show him a thing or two.

Phyllis: I mean, I know ’cause I’m up close and personal with all of your muscles.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Alright. Well, I’ll give you the full report when I’m done.

Victoria: You know, there are times when you think you’re being so, so charming, and yet you are so far off the mark. It makes me wonder if you even know what the definition is. And take my word for it. It’s not your most endearing trait.

Billy: Well, I’m in the media business. I don’t need to be endearing. It’s not exactly in the job description. But let’s just squash that for now. You still haven’t told me why Nate — or how Nate — became Ashland’s new bff.

Victoria: They’re not bffs. Ashland is giving money to the hospital. They happen to have a few things in common. They’ve hit it off. Oh, I’m sorry if that’s not scandalous and titillating enough for you to feed your readers. But that’s not gonna stop you from digging, is it?

Nick: Hey.

Phyllis: Hey.

Nick: I thought that I would come to the gym and try out that new trainer you hired.

Phyllis: Oh, good, good. Tell me what you think. Although you could show him a thing or two.

Nick: Well, flattery will get you everywhere.

Phyllis: I mean, I know ’cause I’m up close and personal with all of your muscles.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Alright. Well, I’ll give you the full report when I’m done.

Phyllis: Okay. Hey! What brings you by?

Jack: I’m surprised you have to ask. I’m here to apologize.

Victor: Ashland. Sorry to keep you waiting.

Ashland: No problem. Thanks for inviting me. So, what is this about? Board business for newman media?

Victor: I thought you and i should get to know each other a little better, considering we’ll soon be in-laws. It’s not always about business, you know.

Ashland: You know, if i hadn’t heard you say those words myself, I would never believe it.

Victor: Well, maybe we’ll surprise each other today.

Billy: Well, I am glad I ran into you. I have a got a bone to pick.

Victoria: About what?

Billy: I ran into dr. Nate hastings, and he said he got a personal invitation from ashland to your big tuscany wedding. I checked the mail — nothing for me. So, what’s up with that? What did nate do to earn this special consideration?

Victoria: You know, you make me wonder why I put you on the guest list in the first place, since every time you see me, all you do is dig for dirt that you can publish about my fiancé.

Billy: You seem annoyed. Usually you like sparring. We can end this quickly and quite simply, really, by just telling me about ashland’s history. And I will be out of your hair. I promise.

Abby: I think this goes here.

Mariah: Hey, can I help you with that?

Abby: I think I got it. Thanks.

Mariah: Oh, you know what? I think I see what you —

Abby: I said I got it. Thank you. There we go. All set.

[ Sighs ] It’s such a nice day outside, I’m gonna take dominic for a walk through chancellor park.

Mariah: Yeah, that sounds lovely. Uh, have a great time.

Abby: We’ll see you later.

Mariah: Mm-hmm.

Abby: Let’s go, honey. It’s so pretty outside.

[ Door opens ]

Tessa: Hey, mariah.

[ Door closes ] Mariah? Oh, honey. What happened?

Chelsea: [ Laughs ] That’s so funny. I can’t wait to talk to him about it. I’m — I’m just so happy that connor had such a great time at camp.

Adam: I think it’s time that we tell him the truth about where things stand with us.

Chelsea: Now? U-um…aren’t you rushing things?

Adam: He deserves to know what’s going on with his family, chelsea.

Chelsea: But so much is still up in the air.

Adam: With us? Chelsea, come on. We have talked about this already.

Chelsea: I guess I just thought, with time, things would get better.

Rey: Oh, there you are.

Sharon: Hey. Um, this is a surprise.

Rey: Well, I thought I’d stop by during my break and see you. But I was the one who got surprised when the barista said that you had to step out. Been running errands?

Sharon: Uh, yes. And no. It wasn’t exactly an errand. It was just something that i felt I needed to do. I went to see adam.

provided by… doesn’t your family deserve the best?

Adam: Look, chelsea, we have had a long and complicated relationship. But I think that we need to go our separate ways now, apart.

Chelsea: But what about connor? I mean, shouldn’t we at least try again, for his sake?

Adam: I know you, chelsea. I can hear it in your voice that you still think it’s possible. But, honestly, I’m surprised to hear that because it wasn’t that long ago that you wanted me out of your life so bad that you thought sending me to prison was the answer.

Rey: Adam. And you went to see him because…?

Sharon: Well, you know why. We talked about it. He wanted some advice on how to talk to connor about the changes that are happening in his family right now, and you’re the one who urged him to not put that off.

Rey: You’re right. I suggested it thinking, again, there were plenty of other people who could give him guidance besides you.

Sharon: Yes, but…

Rey: I know. I know. It’s just in your nature to — to want to help. And that’s one of the things i love most about you. But I have a question. And it’s the same question i have had from the beginning and still have to this day. Will adam ever be out of our lives? You know, I was hoping to spend a little time with you during my break, but now I have to head back to the station. Otherwise, I’ll be late. I hate leaving this like this.

Sharon: Well, why don’t you stay for a few minutes?

Rey: Why? I’ve said my piece. I don’t think it’s gonna change anything, but, uh… I had to say it. I’ll see you tonight.

Billy: I am curious about your relationship for a few very good reasons, and our readers are curious about ashland’s past. The question is, why are you not curious?

Victoria: Don’t you dare presume to know what I care about or what I don’T. But by all means, please feel free to assume that I’m really tired of this little fishing expedition of yours. Feeling stressed in your skin?

Phyllis: Oh, listen. You don’t — you don’t have to apologize to me.

Jack: Well, I said a lot of things last night, and I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.

Phyllis: Oh, you didn’t make me feel uncomfortable.

Jack: Well, you had every right to be. You’re with nick now, and i was —

Phyllis: Being candid. That’s all. Listen, yeah, I’m with nick. You didn’t make any declarations that you were coming after me. You were just telling me what was in your heart. Listen.

[ Sighs heavily ] We’ve known each other a really long time. You don’t have to apologize for simply telling me your truth.

Jack: Okay. Just to be clear, I was apologizing for possibly making you feel uncomfortable, not for the things I said last night. They were true then. They’re just as true now.

Phyllis: Well, I’m glad you got that off your chest.

Nick: Hey, guys.

Phyllis: Hey!

Jack: Hey.

Nick: Am I interrupting?

Phyllis: No. We’re just talking about stuff.

Nick: Well, I have some news that I think both of you are gonna like. I just got a text from summer. She said it is time to make some travel plans for her civil ceremony with kyle.

Jack: I am looking forward to it.

Phyllis: That is amazing. I’m so excited. I’m so excited. All of these weddings in italy. Kyle and summer and then ashland and victoria in tuscany.

Nick: Yeah. I like it. There’s a lot of love in the air.

Mariah: I’m fine.

Tessa: Really? Because you seem pretty upset.

Mariah: Abby and bowie — sorry, dominic — they were going out, and the stroller just — and I — I just wanted to help, and…

[ Sighing ] Mm. Okay. Abby was taking the baby to the park. And it was gonna be his first time seeing it, and I’m sure it was gonna be awesome. And — I don’t know — I just got so sad when I watched them walk out the door.

Tessa: Because?

Mariah: I don’t know.

[ Voice breaking ] I have no idea.

[ Sniffles ] It’s just a feeling that is so…hard to describe. And I — I worry, I guess. And I don’t know why.

Tessa: Well, I mean, after what stitch put you through, it’s only natural. It’s got you looking over your shoulder. You’ve got a lot to put behind you.

Mariah: Yeah. [ Sniffles ] I do. A lot.

[ Sighs heavily ] There’s just this thought that i cannot seem to shake, no matter what I do, and I feel so bad thinking about it while I’m living in abby’s house and… have you — no.

Tessa: What?

Mariah: Abby’s history is the reason why bowie and me were put in jeopardy, you know? Her relationship with stitch. All of it, it — it led to me carrying the baby when she needed a surrogate. And then stitch comes back into town, and he brings chaos and disaster. He still wants abby, and he’s willing to do crazy, terrible things to get her back.

Tessa: Stitch was troubled. But he made his choices. You’re not blaming abby, too, are you?

Mariah: [ Sniffles ] Rinsing the dishes before they go in the dishwasher?

Victor: How’s your treatment going?

Ashland: Thank you for asking. I have to admit, uh, there’s been some rough days, some, uh, difficulties to conquer, but i do believe the treatments are, um, helping me along. The days after the treatments, I’m feeling better, stronger.

Victor: Glad to hear that. Tell me about your early days in business.

Ashland: Well, the question is, where to start?

Victor: Well, how about the beginning? Now, I’ve always been interested in the early careers of successful businessmen, you know?

Billy: Maybe I am fishing a little bit. But it’s not like I’m casting my line blindly, not knowing what I’m about to get. As of right now, I am simply confirming things that I’ve already learned. And I’m trying to fill the holes.

Victoria: Such as?

Billy: Such as the fact that ashland doesn’t even seem like he existed before he met his mentor — camilla rhodes.

Victoria: That is patently ridiculous.

Billy: Mm. Is it really? I mean, we haven’t been able to find a birth certificate on the guy. He talks about in interviews how he lost his parents when he was a teen. We can’t find a death certificate for them, either, at least not under the names that he’s provided. So you tell me if that’s not weird.

Chelsea: Well, it seems like you’ve already made up your mind. I just thought, after everything we’ve been through together, something this important would warrant a longer discussion. I don’t know, adam. I thought maybe we would at least try, for connor’s sake. But, yeah, if this is where we stand, then, yeah, we need to talk to connor.

Adam: Good. I was hoping that you would agree.

Chelsea: But we have to do this the right way, adam. I mean, I’m here. You’re there. You have to at least wait until I come home. We can talk about it together.

Adam: Do you have any idea when you’re coming back?

Chelsea: I — I don’t know. Since we last spoke, anita has taken a turn for the worse. She fell again. She re-injured herself trying to do too much.

[ Sighs ] Coming up with a timeline right now is quite difficult.

Adam: But we have to try, right?

Chelsea: My mom doesn’t have anyone else that can take care of her. She won’t let me hire a nurse to pitch in, much less full time.

Adam: Chelsea, you’re just going to have to insist. It’s just that simple.

Chelsea: Well, adam, my mom is insisting that I take care of her, okay? And I can’t just walk away.

Adam: Even though you know it’s anita just being anita?

Chelsea: What are you saying? What, you think she faked her fall to keep me from leaving?

Adam: I’m saying that I don’t want to wait. It’s not fair to connor. I don’t want to dictate, but it seems like the only solution is for me to deal with this myself.

Chelsea: Okay, can you just hold on a second, please? Stop barreling through this.

[ Stammers ] Then bring him here. We can talk about it together. Please, adam, I have to be a part of the conversation.

Adam: I’m not saying no just yet, but there are problems with coming to minnesota, too. What if we tell him we’re goingthere and then he’s gonna get his hopes up for all of us to be together? He’s gonna be crushed when he realizes what the trip is all about.

Chelsea: You are coming up with any excuse to cut me out of this. You won’t come here, but you won’t wait. I’m stuck, and you are refusing to compromise.

Adam: I’m not trying to be cruel. I’m just trying to do what’s best for our son.

Chelsea: No, you’re just thinking about what’s easiest for you.

Adam: No, I’m no– like many people with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Sharon: Sally! What can I get for you?

Sally: You know, I’m getting kind of bored ordering the same old thing. I feel like something different, surprising, a real pick-me-up. Do you have any suggestions? What is your personal favorite?

Sharon: Oh, I’ve got a lot of faves.

Sally: Well, pick one for me. I love the vibe here. But I must say I was a little surprised when I heard that you were running this place ’cause the first time I heard your name was back when I was an avid reader of restless style. Do you miss working in fashion?

Sharon: Not at all. I, uh, have a degree now, in psychology, actually, a master’s degree. And along with owning and running this place, my life is quite full. I’m very content.

Sally: Well, it seems like you have it all then — great career and a handsome husband.

Sharon: I guess I do. Enjoy your latte.

Sally: Thanks. Mm! Adam. You have to get sharon to make you one these iced lattes. They are delicious.

Adam: Huh. Nobody beats crimson lights. Uh, I think chloe was looking for you at the office.

Sally: Oh. Better get back then. Do you want me to wait for you?

Adam: Oh, no, I’m not, um — I’m not gonna be headed back right away.

Sally: Oh. Too bad. My loss.

Sharon: So…how’s she working out at newman media?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] She’s very enthusiastic.

Sharon: She definitely comes off that way, but she also comes off like, uh…a handful.

Victor: I take it you are familiar with my early days?

Ashland: If you’re asking me whether or not I’ve read your biography, the answer is yes.

Victor: Ah.

Ashland: You grew up without parents in an orphanage, a father who deserted his family and a mother who promised she’d come back for you but never could. You left the orphanage as a teen and changed your name and took charge of your life, laying the groundwork for the empire that you would build. Quite a story.

Victor: Boy, you read it, didn’t you? That’s very nice. Thank you. Did any of it resonate with you?

Ashland: Sure. But of course there are differences. However, like you, I, uh, had to jump-start my life as a teen.

Victor: Uh-huh. So, what was your relationship with your parents like?

Ashland: I was as close to them as any kid could be at that age. They were well-meaning people, but a book about my life would not be as gripping as the biography of the great victor newman.

Victor: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: The interesting part of my story begins with the accomplishments that made me the man I am today. But that was then, and this is now. Maybe I’m saying this in light of my diagnosis or how victoria has been so key in teaching me how to live in the moment. But I feel the need not to look back, to never look back.

Victor: Hmm. And you don’t think that those early experiences made us who we are today?

Victoria: Billy, this is just such an alarming story. I mean, it’s far too big for chanccomm alone. I’m gonna have to alert the major newspapers and the big networks. I’m gonna have to call the cable-news media. Ashland locke does not have a birth certificate, and you cannot find his parents’ death certificates. Oh, I know. Maybe he’s an alien from mars. I cannot believe that you think any of this is significant.

Billy: I cannot believe that you don’T.

Victoria: We’re talking about documents from years ago. Everything was on paper. I mean, maybe it’s buried in a warehouse somewhere, or maybe it’s simply missing.

Billy: Yeah, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe. That’s what lily said.

Victoria: Well, you know what? I knew she was smart. So I wonder — what is she doing with you?

Billy: That’s funny.

Victoria: Seriously, though, billy, if these hard-to-find records are the best that you have, then you’ve wasted enough of my time, not to mention your own time.

Billy: Look, victoria, I am not looking for reasons to doubt your fiancé. They just keep falling in my lap.

Victoria: Yeah, because you’re seeing what you want to see. If you would just stop this ridiculous search for something bad, then we would all be a lot better off.

Billy: That’s not what I’m doing.

Victoria: And I’m warning you. You better not be saying anything negative about ashland to our children.

Billy: Do you honestly think that I would do that?

Victoria: I don’t know what you’re capable of, billy, not when it comes to ashland. You’re so obsessed, I have to wonder. But if you keep this up, then i will let you know what I’m capable of.

Phyllis: Hey, what do you think about this dress for summer’s civil ceremony? What do you think about that?

Nick: It’s nice.

Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, or this one right here. I mean, it’s a far cry from the veil that she has, but, I mean, this is sort of how I envision her looking for her big day.

Nick: Yeah. It’s pretty.

Phyllis: You could pretend to be interested.

Nick: What? I-it’s, uh, you know…

Phyllis: Nice and pretty. Right.

Nick: Yeah. Look, whatever you pick is gonna be amazing.

Phyllis: What about my dress? I’ll give you a fashion show later, and you can decide.

Nick: Sounds fun.

Phyllis: “Fun”? Really? That’s all you got for me?

Jack: Imagine my luck, running into both of you.

Abby: Ah, dominic, look! It’s uncle jack.

Jack: Hey, dom! How you doing, buddy? So small. So perfect. It’s a miracle. There’s no other word for it. It’s a miracle. A baby is the greatest gift anyone can get. Chance enjoying the pictures of his son?

Abby: Pictures? Um… well, honestly, he doesn’t even know he’s been born yet.

Jack: Wait, there’s no reaching him at all? Oh, abby, I’m so sorry. Wow. That’s got to be tough.

Abby: It is, yeah, but, you know, in the meantime, um, i have a great support system at the house. And, well, dominic — he fills that void.

Jack: Okay, I don’t know how I would get word to him, but, you know, I have some connections if you’d like me to try.

Abby: Oh, uncle jack, that is very sweet, but we’ve been going through christine and her contacts, and, honestly, if they can’t find him, I don’t think anyone can. And I don’t really want to put chance’s safety at risk.

Jack: Yeah, I get that. I know what it’s like to be far away from someone you love. It’s only got to be harder when you have no idea where they are and you can’t communicate with them.

Abby: Yeah. It just breaks my heart that chance doesn’t even know he’s a father. This waiting — it’s killing me.

Jack: Well, at least you have this bundle of joy to hold tight while you wait.

Abby: Yeah. Yeah, and I know that chance — he’s gonna be home soon. He’ll do whatever it takes to get back to us. And dominic is not gonna miss out on one bit of love. Everyone in the house is gonna make sure of that.

Mariah: I just hate having these thoughts. I feel so awful and so ashamed. I mean, do I blame abby? No, of course not. But — no. Mariah, shut up. Just stop talking.

Tessa: Mariah, you don’t have to hold back with me. I’m here to listen. You can anything you feel. Sometimes you have to say things out loud just to understand them. You’re scared.

Mariah: I am. I’m terrified.

Tessa: Of stitch?

Mariah: [ Sniffles ] I mean, everybody keeps reassuring me that he’s gone and he’s not coming back, that they’ve beefed up security around here and that he wouldn’t risk it, but what if he does? What if he comes back anyway?

Tessa: Well, he is a wanted fugitive, and the police are looking for him. None of us will be fooled again. Besides, chance will be back eventually, and stitch will realize that he has no shot with abby.

Mariah: I know, but that could take weeks, even months. I mean, who knows how long. I want to be brave. I promise. I really, really do. But I am just so afraid.

[ Voice breaking ] I feel like i used up all of my bravery in that room. And I have so many thoughts in my head that are fighting for attention, and it is drowning out all of the good things around me.

Tessa: I just wish you could see yourself from my perspective. You’re so full of these emotions and nerves. It’s overwhelming. It takes you to these bad places that you just can’t seem to get beyond.

Mariah: I don’t know what to do.

Tessa: I think you need some time and some space to work through everything. Hey…why don’t we go somewhere and do something? It could be a really good distraction. What do you say?

Mariah: No. Uh…no, I’m — I’m sorry. I’m just — I’m not — I’m not really feeling up to it. Uh, I actually think I’m gonna take some time alone.

[ Door opens ]

[ Door closes ]

Phyllis: Okay. Um, something’s going on. And it’s not just, you know, my offer of a lingerie fashion show. Something is distracting you.

Nick: No. In fact, I think you should expand your show to everything that you plan on wearing in italy, including all that sexy lingerie you like to wear.

Phyllis: Alright, you have something on your mind, and it’s not just lingerie.

Nick: I’m just — you know, I’m very happy with what I’m feeling these days, you know? It’s comfortable, and I’m very content. We’ve got all this flirtation and fun going on.

Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, fun is sort of our thing, right?

Nick: Yeah. But it’s not all we have, right?

Phyllis: I mean, I don’t think it is all we have. I mean, I think we have a really good balance of love and fun. And we’ve been through a lot. I think that we’ve paid our dues. So this is easy, right? I mean, we don’t — we don’t have to work so hard anymore, right?

Nick: Yeah. Um… I’m glad to know that we’re on the same page about where things stand with us this time around, you know? I guess we’re lucky like that.

Phyllis: Hey. Hey. I do feel lucky. And I feel grateful.

Chloe: I’m gonna run the numbers by adam, get him to sign off. It’s always a good idea to loop in the boss, be sure he knows that we’re being careful with his money.

Sally: I just left him at crimson lights with sharon.

Chloe: Did you, now?

Sally: You know, I’m still a little bit in the dark about some of genoa city’s past history. What is the deal between the two of them? Did I hear that they were involved once?

Chloe: Ugh. Unbelievable. You actually have a thing for this guy, don’t you?

Sally: Wh– no. I-I was just curious, is all.

Chloe: Yet here you are, doing recon about whether he still has a thing for sharon.

Sally: I’m telling you I was just curious. I thought I picked up a vibe between them.

Chloe: Well, you definitely did. They have a complicated and profound relationship. The thing that blew up chelsea’s relationship with adam was — you guessed it — sharon. Their vibe or connection or whatever you want to call it pushed my friend right to her limits and right over the edge. Adam can’t seem to get sharon out of his system. And he probably never will.

Sharon: What’s that smirk about?

Adam: I’m just amused by your take on sally. She certainly doesn’t inspire neutral opinions and definitely gives people something to react to.

Sharon: Yeah, well, what I’m reacting to is her obvious crush on you.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Sharon. You are letting your imagination run away with you.

Sharon: No, I don’t think so, adam. See, I’m very good at picking up on things like this.

Adam: Well, it wouldn’t even make a difference either way because right now I am focused on my son and my business. So, thank you again for the advice with connor, but after the conversation that I just had with chelsea, the last thing i need is to get involved with another complicated woman.

Sharon: Maybe it’s the complications that make it interesting.

Adam: Hardly.

[ Sighs ] No, the truth is, it’s me, actually. I am the problem. I failed with you. I failed with chelsea. How am I supposed to put somebody else through that inevitable train wreck? It’s not fair to anyone. I have enough on my plate. I’m fine being alone…for now.

Sharon: You know what, adam? Sometimes that’s the best approach.

Tessa: Hi. I heard you guys had an outing to the park. Was it a nice day?

Abby: It’s so beautiful outside, and you should have seen little dominic. I know he’s probably still too young to understand everything, but he just seems so curious about his new environment.

Tessa: Well, um, mariah and i had a talk while you were gone, and it was pretty difficult. Uh, I think seeing you leave with dominic triggered some things.

Abby: Really? She seemed fine when we left.

Tessa: Yeah, but she’s not. She’s scared. She’s worried. It’s the kidnapping, obviously, but she’s missing dominic, too. She’s struggling, abby. I know you’ve seen it, too. And it’s not getting better. It’s getting worse.

Abby: I know that she’s strong, but I don’t know how anyone can hold up after everything she’s been through.

Tessa: I’m just happy that it didn’t break her completely.

Abby: Look, I love mariah so much, and I am forever grateful for everything that she’s done for us. There’s got to be something we can do to help her through this.

[ Keys clatter ]

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

[ Exhales heavily ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Keys clatter ]

[ Exhales sharply ] Hi. I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you come in.

Ashland: You are okay?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I am now. I, um — I just had an encounter with billy that kind of left a bitter taste.

Ashland: Why do I get the sense it’s about me?

Victoria: Oh, come on. I mean, you know billy. It’s just more of the same. He’s always trying to make trouble where there isn’t any, and now he’s convinced that you’re hiding something from your past.

Ashland: Ah. Well, what did billy uncover to make him think something like that?

Victoria: It’s actually what he didn’t uncover that has him all concerned. He’s just making a big deal out of the fact that he can’t find any evidence of your birth, no hospital record, no certificate, nothing, and — and he can’t find anything about your parents’ death, either. And, um — ugh, it’s ridiculous. And I told him so.

[ Cellphone pings ] Did you hear me? Don’t you have anything to say about billy’s latest inanity?

Ashland: Uh, I-in fact, I do.

[ Sighs ] Billy isn’t wrong. There’s something you need to know.

Ashland: There you are.

Victoria: Oh, thank you. You’re smart, you’re handsome, and you know how I like my coffee. You are a triple threat.

Ashland: I wanted somebody that mattered to both of us going forward and not someone from my past.

Victoria: Well, I guess Nate qualifies.

Ashland: Indeed he does. I was thinking of asking Victor, but, uh, he’s walking you down the aisle, I’m assuming. Jack Abbott — well, that’s a complicated dynamic. And of course there’s always billy.

Victoria: What?!

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] I’m kidding.

Victoria: Oh, good. I thought you were serious.

[ Knock on door ]

Adam: Hey, stephanie, can you send me the ad rate projections for the first quarter, please?

Sharon: [ High-pitched voice ] Sure, mr. Newman!

[ Laughs ] I’m sorry. Do you have a minute?

Adam: Uh, sure. But you are the last person that I expected to see here.

Sharon: Um, I just felt like I, uh, had to come by and apologize.

Adam: No, no, you don’T.

Sharon: Well, I mean, you — you came to crimson lights asking for advice about connor, and I just feel like I handled that badly and I’m sorry.

Adam: Sharon, after everything that we’ve been through, you never have to apologize to me.

Sharon: Thank you.

Adam: As a matter of fact, I am the one that is sorry. I told you that I was gonna give you and rey some space, and then I turned around and I broke my word.

Sharon: Mariah was pretty upset when she saw you.

Adam: She’s never had much use for me…because she’s rightfully protective of you. And everything she’s been through, she’s combustible. She lashed out. And, honestly, uh, I probably had it coming.

Sharon: It was a tense situation.

Adam: Look, I — I put you in a difficult spot.

Sharon: Well, still, you came to the coffeehouse and you needed my help and I wasn’t there for you. But I am now.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: There you are.

Victoria: Oh, thank you. You’re smart, you’re handsome, and you know how I like my coffee. You are a triple threat.

Ashland: I aim to please. How’s your schedule this morning?

Victoria: It’s pretty clear, but I do have a breakfast meeting with mom.

Ashland: Newman enterprises official business?

Victoria: Yep, and some wedding details. How about your schedule?

Ashland: I have to review some newman media paperwork. And then I have a very important call with harrison.

Victoria: Oh, that’s gonna be so nice. Just remember — it’s okay to rest.

Ashland: I feel great.

Victoria: Well, I know that, but the chemo is still taking a toll on you, even though you won’t admit it. Have you been taking those supplements that nate gave you?

Ashland: Yes. I think that’s one of the reasons why I feel so good. Oh, and I must have that chemo brain people talk about. Uh, I forgot to tell you something last night. I hope you don’t mind, but i took it upon myself to make a decision on our behalf.

Elena: Thank you.

Nate: Mm-hmm.

Elena: That should definitely hit the spot.

Nate: It has been a minute since I slept in that late.

Elena: Well, we deserved it. And we needed it after all that strenuous activity last night.

Nate: Mmm. I could have stayed in bed all morning long.

Elena: Well, I mean, there’s still time. We could always go back upstairs and cuddle up under the covers.

Nate: Hmm. Very tempting. But we both have things to do today.

Elena: [ Sighs ] You’re right. So I guess that makes this the official end to our date. It was nice while it lasted.

Nate: Mm.

Elena: And must say, I really enjoyed having dinner with victoria and ashland.

Nate: You know, I did, too. It was a good meal, good conversation. And not only did we get an invitation to the wedding of the year, but…

Elena: Ashland asked you to be his best man.

Nate: Yeah.

Elena: [ Laughs ]

Nate: How did that happen?

Elena: I don’t know. I certainly didn’t see it coming. But how do you feel about the request now?

Nate: In the cold light of day, you mean? Still doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve only had, like, a handful of encounters with ashland, one right here after his chemo treatment. So it seems kind of weird. You know, wouldn’t you want an actual friend to be your best man, not someone you just met? I mean, I’m honored, but… why me?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Lily: Hey. You ready to go?

Billy: Go where?

Lily: To the office.

Billy: Yeah. Is it that time already?

Lily: You’ve been staring at your phone all morning. What are you doing?

Billy: Waiting for one of our investigative journalists to get back to me.

Lily: About the ashland locke story?

Billy: Yes. I’m looking for information on the woman that became locke’s mentor. I’m still trying to figure out how he was able to buy those two news stations that launched his career.

Lily: Right. Also known as the investigation causing a rift between you and victoria. So, has our team found anything new yet?

Billy: No, nothing new, no new information on locke during that chapter of his life, which, to me, is incredibly suspicious. But I did learn something even more disturbing than that.

Find your rhythm.

Adam: I’m glad that you changed your mind because I need your advice. You’re the only one that I can talk to about this.

Sharon: Well, I don’t know if that’s true.

Adam: Not only do I value your professional opinion, but nobody understands the dynamics better than you. You know my history with chelsea. You care about connor. You’ve worked with him as a therapist in the past.

Sharon: Look, before we get into how you should talk to connor about your current relationship with chelsea, um, I have a few question for you.

Adam: Alright.

Sharon: Um… are you and chelsea on the same page about what your future will look like?

Adam: What do you mean?

Sharon: Like, do you two have the same expectations, you know? Or does one of you hold out hope for a reconciliation and the other one doesn’t? I mean, have you guys talked about that?

Adam: Um…not exactly.

Sharon: Well, how do you expect that you’re gonna co-parent connor? I mean, you need to have all of these specifics worked out.

Adam: I know. I know. I understand. Yeah.

Sharon: And I think that you need to have those answers before you talk to connor because he’s gonna have all these same questions and he’s especially gonna want to know if there’s any hope that his family might be together again one day. And you need to be prepared for that. So…is it really truly over between you and chelsea?

Elena: I understand why you’re thrown, but I actually don’t think that ashland’s request is all that strange.

Nate: Really? What’s your take on it?

Elena: Well, I mean, he just went through a divorce and he moved. He might not be comfortable asking his close friends who knew his ex-wife, you know? It’s awkward.

Nate: Yeah, that does make some sense. And he did mention that most of his friends were business associates.

Elena: Yeah, and he may not want to ask any of them to be a part of his wedding with victoria. Maybe he wants to choose someone who has a connection to her and her family. Maybe it’s like a symbolic gesture of new beginnings.

Nate: New beginning for a man who may not have a lot of time left.

Elena: Well, he certainly likes you. And he’s very appreciative of how you went above and beyond to help him the other day. I mean, he’s not even your patient, and you showed him compassion and you treated him like a human being and not like some big-shot billionaire.

Nate: And dealing with cancer helps people cut through the noise. I think ashland’s that type.

Elena: Right. So, now that we’ve talked it through, what do you say? Are you gonna be his best man?

Victoria: I love that you invited nate and elena to the wedding. I mean, nate’s — he’s an old friend. And elena — the more I get to know her, the more I like her. I didn’t realize we had so much in common.

Ashland: I’m so glad to hear you say that because there’s more. I even surprised myself with this one, and it came up spontaneously, but I asked nate to be in the wedding party… as my best man.

Victoria: Oh.

[ Chuckles ] Okay.

Ashland: Well, nate hasn’t given me an answer yet because i kind of caught him off guard. I’m glad he’s taking his time thinking about it, probably more than I did. But it struck me last night that, uh, it’s good to have someone like him by my side, you know? Maybe that sounds crazy, but…

Victoria: No, not at all. I understand exactly why you did what you did.

Billy: I asked our team to dive deeper into ashland’s past. I want to know everything, starting from the beginning. And they haven’t been able to find anything, so you know what that means.

Lily: That we need better investigative reporters?

Billy: No. It means his history’s been scrubbed.

Lily: So, what, you think that ashland’s hiding something?

Billy: “Think”? I know he is. How do you not know any information on the guy?

Lily: Like what?

Billy: Well, like where he was born, for instance, or the truth of what happened to his parents.

Lily: I thought they died when he was young.

Billy: Exactly. Every article on him talks about his parents, mary and ian locke, died when he was a teenager, but there’s no death certificates to prove that.

Lily: Okay, well, there could be a reasonable explanation for that.

Billy: Okay, what if I told you we can’t find a birth certificate for locke, either? It’s as if he and his family never existed.

Dayquil severe for you…

Adam: Whenever chelsea and i once had is now over. I’ve been very clear with her about that.

Sharon: And you guys have talked that out, you’re on the same page, or you don’t know?

Adam: We’ve had conversations, but I don’t recall that I’ve gotten a definitive answer from her. And, um…

Sharon: And what?

Adam: There have been times when I get the feeling that she’s let go of a lot of her anger towards me and that she would be willing to give things another chance.

Sharon: Well, that does make sense, given your history. You two have overcome some huge obstacles together, and you managed to forgive each other.

Adam: But it’s different now. At least, it is for me. Too much damage has been done. But the thing that has not changed is our commitment to connor. We both want to do what’s right by him.

Sharon: Well, then I think you need to talk to connor sooner rather than later. You need to sit down with him, you and chelsea, and have a family conversation. You need to let him know that his parents are separating.

Adam: I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think chelsea and I are gonna be able to do that anytime soon.

Sharon: Why not?

Adam: Because I don’t know when she’s going to return from anita’S. I mean, what if she’s gone for months?

Sharon: The longer you put this off, the more questions he’s gonna have.

Adam: You’re right. But it’s just — it seems too important to do this on a video call.

Sharon: No, this absolutely needs to be done in person.

Adam: And I think it’s clear that I need to do this now. And I need to do it on my own.

Nate: I like ashland, you know? He’s smart, witty. And there’s no pretense with him.

Elena: You can respect that.

Nate: It’s a big deal to be asked to play the role like best man in someone’s big day. I’m not quite ready to say yes.

Elena: Hmm. So, if you say “no,” does that mean we’re not going to tuscany for the wedding?

Nate: Oh, we’re definitely going to that wedding.

[ Chuckles ] I can’t pass up a reason to go to italy. You know, last time I was there, they ran out of pasta.

Elena: What?

Nate: It’s true! I ate all the pasta in the whole country.

[ Both laugh ] The spaghetti, rigatoni, linguini, all of it.

Elena: I see. So we have to go back to see if they made more.

Nate: Hmm! But, you know, victoria and ashland, you know, seem to be very much in love. I’m happy to support them and celebrate them. Plus, I get a chance to spend some time with you in the most romantic place on earth.

Elena: I feel the same way.

Billy: You have to admit is is suspicious that there’s no record of locke’s birth or his family.

Lily: Yeah, sure, I’ll admit it. It’s intriguing.

Billy: “Intriguing”? Come on. It’s more than that. Look, think about victor, for instance. Not that I want to mention his name, but he is a business icon, much like locke.

Lily: Yeah, sure, they have similar backgrounds.

Billy: They do, don’t they? And that’s my point. Victor has been talking about his story for decades, about how he was an orphan that rose to the top. Those are the details that people want to hear. That’s what builds the legend. So why would locke not talk about that part of his life?

Lily: Maybe he’s a private person. Maybe he’s not close with his parents. Or maybe the death of his parents is painful for him.

Billy: Okay, then how do you explain the no death or birth certificate?

Lily: Because documents weren’t digitized back then. It’s very easy they could have been lost. It doesn’t prove a cover-up.

Billy: It’s more than that, lily. I mean, there’s no information about his school days, no family anecdotes, nothing.

Lily: Well, given how many lives he’s wrecked, do you find it that surprising that nobody wants to talk about him on the record?

Billy: Why are you fighting me on this? Do you really want me to give this investigation up that badly?

Lily: No. I just want you to have facts before you jump to conclusions ’cause it’s very possible this road could lead to nowhere.

Billy: Yeah. Well, maybe you’re right. You very well could be right.

Victoria: Asking nate to be your best man actually makes a lot of sense. We’re both people who are focused on work and family. It doesn’t leave time for much else.

Ashland: Yeah, like long-lasting friendships.

Victoria: Exactly.

Ashland: I moved my entire life here to genoa city, yet i don’t miss anyone that I used to socialize with back in new york. All of my so-called relationships were developed around networking purposes.

Victoria: I can understand that.

Ashland: Well, tara introduced me to some of her friends.

[ Clears throat ] We didn’t have much in common. She loved summering in the hamptons and going to all the galas, but I’ve always enjoyed being somewhat of a loner. And that was true before locke communications group. Once I developed a reputation — well, you know what it’s like to be in a powerful position.

Victoria: I do. I mean, most new acquaintances either defer to you or they ask you for something.

Ashland: And nate did neither one of those things. You know, when I was at my most vulnerable, struggling after chemo, he came to my aid. And he reminded me that I still had some power over the disease, how I treat it, how I include loved ones. Those were my choices.

Victoria: Agreed.

Ashland: Those ideas had a very strong impression on me. And it speaks to nate’s integrity. And he tells a damn good story.

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

Ashland: So I’d like to call nate my friend and have him stand with me when we get married.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Victoria: Who could that be?

Ashland: Not who. What. And it’s for you.

I may have moderate to

severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Billy: So, let me get this straight. What you’re saying is I can’t be patient.

Lily: Of course not. You’ve been checking your phone all morning. Oh! Hi, guys.

Nate: Hey!

Elena: Hey.

Billy: Well, if it isn’t our new star.

Lily: Yeah, having coffee with our previous star.

[ Laughter ] How are you both?

Nate: We’re good.

Billy: Uh, elena, lily told me about your new ideas to revamp askmdnow. I am super psyched.

Elena: Me too. So excited.

Nate: You can go ahead and say it, billy.

Billy: Say what?

Nate: That elena’s gonna be so good at her new job, everyone’s gonna forget about little old me.

Elena: Ohh.

Billy: Well, that is the plan. We want everyone saying, “nate who?” After her first week.

Lily: I mean, clearly we made the right choice, right? But I will miss seeing you around.

Nate: I’m sure you’ll still pencil me into your busy schedule.

Lily: Yeah, of course. Let’s do that dinner that we all talked about at the launch party.

Elena: Yeah, when are we gonna do that?

Lily: Uh, soon. Let’s just look at our schedules, and we can go somewhere. Or come over. We’ll make you dinner.

Billy: Yeah, that sounds great.

Elena: Sounds perfect. We are so popular lately.

Nate: [ Chuckles ]

Lily: What do you mean?

Elena: Oh, uh, we just had dinner with victoria and ashland last night.

Billy: Really? How’d that come about?

Nate: Well, ashland wants to help out with the new surgical wing at memorial.

Elena: And that’s how it started, but it ended up being a really good night. We talked about the wedding. It’s gonna be amazing.

Billy: Is that right? I’m sure it’s gonna be a big to-do. Any details you want to share?

Ashland: I have been waiting for this. What a perfect time for it to arrive.

Victoria: What is it?

Ashland: Well, consider it a combination congratulatory merger gift and an early wedding present.

Victoria: That is so sweet of you, but you shouldn’t have gotten me anything.

Ashland: Oh, you need this.

Victoria: Okay, well, now I’m very curious.

Ashland: Well, see for yourself. I know that your father’s portrait hovered over the ceo’s office for many years.

Victoria: Yes, it’s — it’s in the boardroom now.

Ashland: I thought it was time that it was replaced. This painting should take its rightful spot in your office to exemplify the changing of the guard.

Victoria: I love it. It’s just beautiful. I — I don’t know what to say.

[ Sighs ] I-is this a londeree? A meryl londeree?

Ashland: Indeed it is.

Victoria: How did you get her to do it?

Ashland: It wasn’t easy to convince her, but you deserve it. There is nothing I won’t do to prove my love for you.

Victoria: You already have, again and again.

Sharon: If you feel compelled to talk to connor on your own, then I think you need to speak with chelsea first. I mean, you don’t want her to be caught off guard after the fact. And that way she’ll be in the right headspace for when she talks to connor.

Adam: Agreed. It’s just… it’s going to be a difficult conversation. I’m a little wary.

Sharon: You can’t avoid it.

Adam: If she’s holding on to any hope that we can reconcile, if I take away that possibility, who knows how she’s gonna react, sharon?

Sharon: It’s gonna be painful. So just speak to her with respect and a lot of empathy for what she’s going through. You know, that’ll go a long way towards easing the pain.

Adam: I’ll try my best.

Sharon: Maybe it’s a good thing that she’s staying with her mother right now. That way, she’ll have some help if this does hit her hard.

Adam: I don’t know if anita is the best influence on her.

Sharon: Do you think anita would promise chelsea to heal her wounds by, like, running a con?

Adam: Something like that. I don’t know. Maybe I’m worried over nothing. Maybe I’m wrong about the vibe I’ve been getting from chelsea. But it is possible that she still despises me and she’s just being civil for connor’s sake. And in that case, if I do tell her that I intend to tell him on my own, it could provoke a huge negative response, maybe even set back her treatment.

Sharon: Well, maybe you should contact her therapist and let them know what’s going on. And then that way they can be prepared in case she needs that extra support.

Adam: I think she would think that’s a violation of her privacy.

Sharon: True. Well, I guess you’ll have to play that by ear. But it’s really crucial that you handle this right. You know, you’re setting up the foundation for how the two of you are gonna move forward as parents, and that’s what’s most important for connor.

Adam: You’re 100% right, sharon. I’m gonna do everything that you suggested.

Sharon: I’m glad that I came to talk to you about this.

Adam: I knew you would be the one person to steer me in the right direction. You always have been. – Bedtime!! – Bedtime.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Adam: How do I frame this with connor? I get the sense that he knows something is wrong between chelsea and me, so it might not come as a total shock.

Sharon: Maybe that’s a good thing.

Adam: Still, I just think it’s gonna be heartbreaking for him.

Sharon: Just use clear and simple words and be open, you know? Be honest. Be respectful of chelsea, but be understanding of how hard this is for connor. You know, what he really needs to know is that his parents still love him and that’s never gonna change.

Adam: Thank you, sharon. That’s exactly what I needed to hear.

Sharon: You can do this. I know you can.

Adam: It’s nice to know that still believe in me.

Sally: I have some numbers on a prospective budget that — sorry. I didn’t know you were with someone.

Nikki: Grazie mille. Ciao.

Victoria: Hi.

Nikki: Hi!

Victoria: How are things in italy?

Nikki: Oh, fantastico.

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

Nikki: The staff at the palazzo are very busy getting ready for our arrival. I just talked to the coordinator — francesca. Everything’s coming together.

Victoria: Thank you, mom. I don’t know what I’d do without you handling all the details.

Nikki: Darling, it’s my pleasure. You know I love doing this stuff. And I just want everything to be perfect for you and ashland. How is he doing?

Victoria: He’s good.

Nikki: Well, I’m happy to hear that. I was worried when you didn’t make it to the launch party.

Victoria: Oh, yes, well, that was a tough day. But he’s doing much better now. He seems to be handling the treatment very well.

Nikki: And how are you coping?

Victoria: I’m fine. I’m choosing to believe that the chemo is doing what it’s supposed to do and fighting the cancer in his body so that we can have more time together. In the meantime, we’re just making every minute count.

Nikki: I’m sure that you are.

Nate: I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to share what victoria and ashland told us about their wedding.

Elena: Yeah, especially with victoria’s ex, who has a vested interest in publishing stories about her fiancé.

Billy: Okay. I get it. Didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable. Of course, none of this would be on the record. Whatever we talk about, I would not share publicly.

Elena: It’s fine. We don’t have any details anyway.

Lily: Yeah, and if you’re so curious, just ask victoria.

Billy: Maybe I will.

Lily: Yeah, I think you should ’cause I think even if elena and nate know more, victoria wouldn’t want them to share it with anyone.

Elena: Yeah. And who knows? We might have to sign a non-disclosure agreement to even attend this elaborate wedding. I don’t know. I’ve never been to an event where we might actually have to dodge paparazzi.

Lily: Wait, you were invited to the wedding in italy?

Elena: Yeah.

Lily: Wow, that’s gonna be a great trip for you guys.

Billy: Who invited you? Victoria or ashland?

Lily: Well, I’m sure victoria. I mean, her and nate go way back.

Elena: No, it was actually ashland. He and nate really hit it off.

Billy: Is that right?

Nate: Yeah. I like the guy.

Elena: They seem to be building a real friendship, which I am totally in support of because all you do is spend time at the hospital and with me.

Nate: Oh, come on. I can never spend too much time with you.

Lily: Aww, well, that’s good ’cause you’ll be going to italy together.

Nate: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: That looks like our order. I’ll get it.

Lily: Oh, I’ll join you. Uh, I’m really glad that you stopped fishing for details. And, plus, I don’t think elena and nate know anything.

Billy: Are you kidding me? Did you hear what he said? Something’s not right. (Dog vo) mmmm, this beneful grain free…

Billy: You two out of here?

Nate: Yeah. It’s about that time.

Lily: Aww, it’s good to see you guys. And let’s do our dinner.

Elena: Absolutely.

Lily: Yeah. Okay.

Elena: Bye.

Billy: See ya.

Lily: Bye. There is nothing wrong with what nate and elena said.

Billy: Nate and ashland becoming best friends? It doesn’t raise a red flag for you?

Lily: Okay, I think you’re exaggerating.

Billy: Okay. Maybe. But ashland’s donating to the hospital. They’re having dinner together. Now, out of the blue, they’re invited to the wedding?

Lily: Maybe because nate’s a really great guy? Maybe because ashland’s getting treatment at the hospital that nate works at? I mean, it’s not like he has to be on a budget and not invite too many people.

Billy: No, that’s true. He can afford whoever he wants to be there. But it’s still a destination wedding. You’re still flying halfway around the world to get there. You’re still taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with him and the newmans.

Lily: Yeah, it’s a dream vacation. It’s not an obligation.

Billy: Yeah, and I’m sure that’s exactly how ashland sold it to him, which is also weird. He’s built his career off being intimidating and aloof. Now all of a sudden he’s mr. Charming to people he barely knows?

Lily: Okay, they are doctors. They’re not moguls. He doesn’t have to worry about them screwing him over on a business deal. And, besides, everyone has said that ashland has changed since his diagnosis.

Billy: That’s what he wants everyone to believe.

Lily: Okay, why can’t you take anything that ashland does at face value? Like, what if he wants to expand his social circle?

Billy: Men like ashland don’t do that. They don’t seek friendships unless there’s something that they’re looking to get out of it.

Victoria: It was just so beautiful and so thoughtful.

Nikki: I didn’t realize that artist was still painting portraits.

Victoria: Well, neither did I, but ashland found a way to make it work.

Nikki: What a wonderful gift.

Victoria: I know. It just demonstrates how — how well he knows me in such a short amount of time. He recognizes how much being ceo of newman enterprises means to me. You know, mom, I’ve been wanting to replace dad’s picture for some time, but I want you to know it’s not a slight against him, of course.

Nikki: Oh, no. I understand.

Victoria: I just would like to step out of his shadow and shine on my own.

Nikki: My darling, you have always shone, but I’m happy to hear that ashland sees that as clearly as your father and I do.

Victoria: The connection that ashland and I have — it’s like he sees me for who I am. I am painfully aware of everything hanging in the balance, and I try not to think about how quickly time is slipping away. But the closer we get to the wedding, the more I wonder — what if the worst happens? What if I lose this man that i love before we’ve even barely begun our lives together? What — what will I do then, mom?

Sally: [ Sighs ] I can’t believe I did that. I apologize. I didn’t mean to interrupt. I just had something important to discuss.

Adam: Uh, sharon and I are discussing something important, as well. So, can you come back later?

Sally: No worries. It was a private matter anyway.

Sharon: Um, it’s fine. I think we covered everything. I should get going.

Adam: Thank you, sharon. You’re a life-saver.

Sally: Bye! Is it just me, or did it get a little chilly in here? Look, I’m — really, I’m sorry for interrupting —

Adam: No, you’re not.

Sally: What?

Adam: I saw you outside the door listening to our conversation before you burst in here.

Sally: No, I — I didn’t mean to —

Adam: Regardless of what you intended, I don’t find that behavior the least bit amusing. Sharon and I — we were talking about my son. And when it comes to my kid, i just don’t appreciate people playing games. Front loader odor.

Sally: I-I’m really sorry. And I mean that this time. I — I came to the door, and i stopped when I saw the two of you. I didn’t really hear anything, but it was foolish and immature of me, and I’m sorry, adam. The truth is…[Sighs] I know that we’re trying to keep things professional between us, but… I got jealous.

Adam: Of sharon?

Sally: Well, you two have a history. But I know that that is none of my business, and whenever the green-eyed monster takes over, I make bad decisions. But I promise I will do better about trying to squash the beast if he ever makes another appearance. Your past, present, and future relationships with sharon are none of my business.

Adam: That’s right.

Sally: So, we’re good then?

Adam: We’re good. Now, did you actually have news about the budget, or was that just a cover story?

Sally: I will e-mail you because I’ve already taken up enough of your time. Get to work.

Adam: Okay, boss. Hey, will you, um, shut the door on your way out, please?

Sally: Gotcha.

Adam: Hey. It’s me. We need to have a discussion about the future, chelsea, and about our son.

Nikki: This has been my concern the whole time. The whole family is worried. I mean, not that you and ashland won’t be happy together, but that, depending on how his illness progresses, it could cut your time together short. And then your heart will be broken. You’ve been so strong through all of this, and I really admire that. But it’s okay to have some fears. And, really, it’s not too late to admit that this engagement has been very abrupt.

Victoria: Are you saying that I should back out of the wedding now?

Lily: I don’t think it’s a red flag that nate and ashland are friends.

Billy: Well, we’ll find out soon enough who’s right or wrong. But I just got more information from our investigative journalist.

Lily: Did they find something out?

Billy: Nope, nothing.

You need to look at why this matters so much to you.Who cares if ashland is hiding where he came from?

Billy: Who cares? If that’s true, the man is a lie. Everything he’s done in his life is a lie, his whole entire empire. That is a big story, a story that people want to hear. Most importantly, victoria deserves to know that. I don’t need any more motivation than that.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Next week on

“the young and the restless”…

Victoria: I asked you if there were any secrets that i needed to know, and you said no.

Ashland: This was something that I’d hoped you’d never need to know.

Mariah: I am terrified.

Tessa: Of stitch?

Mariah: Everybody keeps reassuring me that he’s not coming back, that they’ve beefed up security around here, and that he wouldn’t risk it, but what if he does?

Nick: Do phyllis and I seem like a good fit to you?

Recap written by Christine

When someone came to Adam’s office, he thought it was his assistant. It was Sharon, who adopted a silly voice and pretended she was the assistant. Adam was caught off guard, because Sharon was the last person he expected to see. She came by to apologize for mishandling things when he came to Crimson Lights for advice on Connor. He told her that, after all they’d been through, she never had to apologize to him. She thanked him. He was sorry for breaking his promise to give her and Rey space. Sharon noted that Mariah was upset to see Adam. He said Mariah never had use for him, because she was rightfully protective of Sharon, and now Mariah was combustible after all she’d been through. He figured he probably had Mariah’s outburst coming. Sharon said Adam came to the coffeehouse because he needed her help, and she wasn’t here for him, but she was now.

Adam was glad Sharon was here, because he needed her advice. He valued her professional opinion, and no one understood the dynamics better than Sharon. Sharon asked if Adam and Chelsea had the same expectations about what their future would look like. He said not exactly. She said they had to work those specifics out before talking to Connor, because he was going to want to know if there was any hope for his family to be together again. She asked if it was really truly over for him and Chelsea. He’d been clear with Chelsea that their relationship was over, but he didn’t recall ever getting a definitive answer about how she felt. There had been times when he sensed that Chelsea would be willing to reconcile with him. Sharon thought that made sense, because Chelsea and Adam had overcome some huge things. He said that too much damage had been done, but they still wanted to do right by Connor. Sharon thought Adam, Chelsea and Connor needed to have a family conversation soon and tell Connor that his parents were separating. Adam didn’t think he’d be able to do it soon, because he didn’t know when Chelsea was coming back from Anita’s. Sharon advised against putting it off. Adam and Sharon were in agreement that this talk should be done in person. Adam decided that he needed to do this now, on his own.

Sharon said that if Adam felt compelled to talk to Connor on his own, he needed to speak to Chelsea first. He was a little wary of how Chelsea would react when he took away any hope of reconciliation. Sharon advised speaking with respect and empathy for what Chelsea was going through. Sharon said that it might be a good thing Chelsea was with her mother now, just in case this hit her hard. He wasn’t sure Anita was the best influence on Chelsea. Sharon asked if Anita would encourage Chelsea to pull a con to heal her wounds, and Adam said something like that. He wondered if he was worried over nothing; maybe Chelsea still despised him and she was being civil for Connor’s sake. In that case, if he told Chelsea he was talking to Connor alone, it might cause a huge setback for her or provoke a huge negative response. Sharon suggested contacting Chelsea’s therapist, but Adam said Chelsea would consider it a huge violation of her privacy.

Sally was on her way into Adam’s office when she overheard the conversation through the open door. She stopped and listened as Sharon spoke about the importance of handling this situation correctly. She said Adam would be setting up a foundation for how he and Chelsea moved forward as parents. He said he knew Sharon would be the one person to steer him in the right direction. “You always have been,” he said. Adam asked how to frame this with Connor. He got the sense that Connor knew something was wrong with him and Chelsea, so it wouldn’t come as a shock. Sharon advised being open and honest and respectful of Chelsea. She said to let Connor know his parents would always love him. She assured him that he could do this. He said it was nice to know she believed in him. Sally barged in talking about the budget, pretending that she didn’t know Sharon was in the room.

Sally feigned sorrow for interrupting and she said she had something important to discuss. Adam asked her to come back later because he and Sharon were also discussing something important. Sally said okay – it was a private matter anyway. Sharon said they’d cover everything, so she should get going. Adam thanked Sharon. Sally said bye, but Sharon didn’t reply. Sally commented on the way things just got chilly in here. Sally said she was sorry for interrupting again, but Adam knew that wasn’t true because he saw her hanging around outside the door before she walked in. he said he and Sharon were talking about his kid, and he didn’t appreciate games when it came to his child. Sally apologized again, and she said she meant it this time. She swore she didn’t really hear anything. She admitted her actions were foolish and immature. She knew they were trying to keep things professional, but she got jealous. She knew he and Sharon had a history. She promised that she’d try and not act on her jealousy if it came up again. She said his past, present and future relationship with Sharon was none of Sally

s business. He agreed. He asked if she actually had something to discuss about the budget. She said she’d email him because she took up enough of his time already. After she left, Adam called Chelsea and said they had to discuss the future and Connor.

Victoria and Ashland had coffee at home. They talked about their schedules. She had a breakfast meeting with Nikki. He had to review some Newman Media paperwork, and he had a call with Harrison. She encouraged him to rest, too. He revealed that he’d made an executive decision and invited Elena and Nate to the wedding. Victoria was glad. He was happy she approved, because he’d spontaneously asked Nate to be his best man. He wanted someone who mattered to him and Victoria going forward and someone who wasn’t from his past. Ashland thought of asking Victor, but he’d be walking Victoria down the aisle, or Jack, but that was a complicated situation. The other option was Billy. Victoria was shocked, but Ashland was just kidding on the last one. He liked Nate and thought it’d be good to have someone like Nate by his side.

Victoria thought Ashland’s choice made sense. They were both focused on work and family, which didn’t leave time for much else. He said, like long-lasting friendships. He moved his life to Genoa City, and he didn’t miss anyone he used to socialize with in NY. All his so-called relationships were built for networking. Tara introduced him to her friends, but they didn’t have much in common. He’d always enjoyed being somewhat of a loner, even before he started Locke Communications Group. Then once he developed a reputation he knew she know what it was like to be in a powerful position. She did – most new acquaintances either deferred to you or wanted something from you. Ashland said Nate did neither. Ashland stated that Nate came to his aid and reminded him that he still had some power over his disease, and that made a strong impression on him. He thought it spoke to Nate’s integrity. He’d like to call Nate his friend and have him by his side at the wedding.

A gift for Victoria from Ashland arrived. He said it was a merger/wedding present. She opened it and was speechless when she saw the large painting of herself. He knew Victor used to have a similar one in the CEO’s office. She said it was in the boardroom now. He thought that it was time for her portrait to hang in its rightful spot in her office, to exemplify the changing of the guard. She thought It was just beautiful, and she didn’t know what to say. She looked at it again and asked if this was a Meryl Londeree. It was, and she was impressed that he’d managed to get her to paint this. He said it wasn’t easy, but he convinced the artist that Victoria deserved this. He wanted to prove his love for her. She said she had, again and again.

Victoria met Nikki at Society. Nikki reported that the staff at the palazzo was preparing for their arrival. Victoria was grateful Nikki was helping with this. Nikki asked how Ashland was doing. Victoria said that he had a rough day the day of the launch party, but now he seemed to be handling treatment well. Nikki asked how Victoria was. She was fine, and she was choosing to stay optimistic about Ashland’s treatment.

Victoria told Nikki that she received a beautiful thoughtful gift from Ashland. Nikki didn’t realize that artist was still painting. Victoria said she wasn’t, but Ashland made it work. She thought the gift demonstrated how well he knew her in such a short time. She’d been wanting to replace Victor’s picture for some time. It wasn’t a slight. She just wanted to step out of Victor’s shadow. Nikki said Victoria had always shone, and she was glad Ashland saw that as clearly as Nikki and Victor did. Victoria said it was like Ashland saw her for who she was, and she tried not to think about time slipping away. She wondered what she’d do if she lost the man she loved before they’d barely began their lives together. Nikki had been concerned about this the whole time, and the whole family was worried. Nikki said it was okay to admit this engagement had been abrupt. Victoria asked if Nikki was saying she should call off the engagement.

Elena and Nate were at Crimson Lights after their night together. She suggested going back upstairs, and he was tempted, but they both had things to do today. She guessed that was the official end to their date. They both enjoyed last night with Victoria and Ashland, but they were shocked Ashland asked Nate to be his best man. It still didn’t make sense to Nate that Ashland asked him and not one of his actual friends. He was honored, but he didn’t understand.

Elena thought it made sense. She said that Ashland just went through a divorce, so he might not want to ask any of his friends who knew his wife. Nate thought that was a good point. He added that Ashland said most of his friends were business associates. Elena said Ashland might want to choose someone who had a connection to Victoria and her family. She added that Nate went above and beyond and showed Ashland compassion, like a human being and not like a big shot billionaire.

Elena asked if Nate was going to accept. Nate liked Ashland, but he wasn’t ready to say yes. She asked if they weren’t going to Tuscany if he said no. He assured her that they were definitely going to that wedding. He teased that he ate all the pasta in Italy the last time he was there. He was happy to celebrate Victoria and Ashland, and he wanted to spend time with Elena in the most romantic place on earth.

Billy and Lily were at home, and he was waiting for one of the investigative journalists to get him some information on Ashland’s mentor. Lily noted that this investigation was causing a rift between Billy and Victoria. She asked if the team found something new. They hadn’t uncovered anything on that time in Ashland’s life, which Billy found suspicious. He thought Ashland’s history had been scrubbed. There was nothing to be found about where he was born or what happened to his parents. Lily said they died when he was young. Billy stated that every article on Ashland said his parents, Mary and Ian Locke, died when he was a teenager, but there were no death certificates proving that. There was no birth certificate for Ashland either. It was as if he and his family never existed. Lily admitted it was intriguing. Billy hated to bring up Victor, but Victor had talked for decades about his early years as an orphan and how he rose to the top. Why didn’t Ashland want to discuss that part of his life? Lily thought it might be too painful for Ashland to revisit, or maybe he wasn’t close to his parents. As for the missing records, things weren’t digitized when Ashland was young, so maybe they were lost. Billy added that there were no anecdotes about his family or information on his school days. Lily said that, given all the lives Ashland wrecked, maybe no one wanted to go on the record about him. He asked why she was fighting him – did she want him to give this investigation up that badly? She just wanted him to have facts before he jumped to conclusions.

Billy and Lily went to Crimson Lights and ran into Elena and Nate. They chatted about AskMDNow and agreed to have dinner soon. Elena joked that she and Nate were popular lately. Elena mentioned the dinner with Victoria and Ashland and she said they discussed the wedding. Billy was interested in details. Nate didn’t think it’d be appropriate for him and Elena to repeat what they were told. Elena noted that Billy had a vested interest in publishing stories on this. Billy didn’t mean to make anyone uncomfortable – he clarified that this was off the record. Elena said they didn’t know anything anyway. Lily suggested that Billy could just ask Victoria what he wanted to know. Elena mentioned that she might have to dodge paparazzi for the wedding. Lily was surprised they were invited. Billy asked who made the invitation – Victoria or Ashland. Lily was sure it was Victoria, since she and Nate went way back. Elena clarified that it was Ashland – he and Nate hit it off. Nate said he liked Ashland.

Billy and Lily’s order was finished, so they left the table. At the counter, Lily said she was glad Billy stopped fishing for details, especially since it seemed like Nate and Elena didn’t know anything. Billy, however, was struck by something that Nate said. Elena and Nate left. Billy thought it was suspicious that Ashland was trying to befriend Nate. Billy said that Ashland donated to the hospital, then the couples had dinner together, and now all of a sudden Nate and Elena were invited to the wedding. Lily said Nate was a great guy, and Ashland was getting treatment at the hospital where Nate worked. Billy said Ashland built a career being intimidating and aloof, and now he was charming people he barely knew. Lily said Elena and Nate were doctors, not moguls Ashland had to worry about screwing him over. Billy said men like Ashland didn’t seek friendships unless there was something they were hoping to get out of it.

Billy and Lily went to work. He said that the investigative journalist hit another dead end. It was almost like Ashland didn’t exist until he met the woman who became his mentor. He didn’t see how it was possible for anyone in this day in age to have no record of the first 20 years of his life. Lily asked who cared if Ashland was hiding where he came from. Billy said if that was true, that meant Ashland was a lie, and his empire was a lie. People would want to hear about this story and Victoria deserved to know.

Ashland was at home staring at Victoria’s portrait. He got a text that said “You’re a hard man to keep track of.”

Adam: Why? So you can douse her with a champagne bucket again?

Phyllis: She brought me down to her level, which is even low for you.

Adam: Mm. Well, we, um, mud-dwellers have to stick together, you know?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Look at you. I knew this new, improved version of Adam Newman wouldn’t last long. Do you know that Sally would be out of town if you didn’t allow Chloe to hire her?

Adam: Or unless you want to tell me what your real issue is with Sally. Then I’m all ears.

Phyllis: You already know my issue with Sally.

Adam: I think I was right the first time that we discussed her — that you see a little bit of yourself in her.

Phyllis: I’m not even gonna dignify that with a response.

Adam: You have a tell, Phyllis. Every time that you swan out of a room without getting the last word, I know that I hit a nerve. Mm.

Nate can’t decide if he should be Ashland’s best man or not but he and Elena are definitely going to Italy as wedding guests to witness the wedding of the century.

Sharon advises, Adam to talk to Chelsea in person about the best way to tell Connor that they are getting a divorce. Sally listens in on the conversation from the hallway. Adam notices Sally listening to his conversation in the hallway and later tells her she can’t use Connor to play games. Jack: [ Sighing ]

Phyllis: Where’s your she-devil tonight?

Adam: I’m letting chloe give sally a second chance. I figured you would be in favor of those since you’ve had quite a few yourself.

Phyllis: You more than I.

Adam: It’s not a contest.

Phyllis: No, it’s not a contest! Why are you keeping her here? Honestly, sally ran my daughter out of town, and you’re getting some sort of pleasure by keeping her around.

Adam: Summer is doing quite well in milan, from what I hear.

Phyllis: That’s not the point.

Adam: Listen. I just want to have a drink without the drama.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Or unless you want to tell me what your real issue is with sally. Then I’m all ears.

Phyllis: You already know my issue with sally.

Adam: I think I was right the first time that we discussed her — that you see a little bit of yourself in her.

Phyllis: I’m not even gonna dignify that with a response.

Adam: You have a tell, phyllis. Every time that you swan out of a room without getting the last word, I know that I hit a nerve. Mm.

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: Hey! Nice to see yoU. You want your usual?

Nick: Yes, please. Thank you.

Sharon: Alright. How are things?

Nick: Everything’s going good. I was just looking at some pictures earlier that summer sent me from milan of her and harrison.

Sharon: Ooh, let me see.

Nick: Alright. There you go.

Sharon: [ Gasps ] Aww, summer looks so happy.

Nick: I know, right? Uh, I also have some of dominic right here.

Sharon: Oh, I met him in person when abby brought him home from the hospital. He’s adorable.

Nick: He’s sure is. I’m just so glad that he is healthy, considering how he came into this world. How’s mariah doing?

Sharon: You know, honestly, i think this ordeal has affected her in more ways than she even realizes, but she’s got a strong, loving support system.

Nick: Well, I hope I’m included in that group.

Sharon: Of course. You’re family. Look, I know you’ve had a lot keeping you busy lately. I read an article about the newman media launch party, and, uh, new hope was featured quite prominently there.

Nick: That partnership is, uh — is looking good right now.

Sharon: I still can’t get over it, you working with adam.

Nick: Well, we have both been on our best behavior to this point.

Sharon: You giving him a chance to prove that he’s changed — that’s — it’s incredible. It’s a testament to the kind of man you are.

Nick: Thanks for saying that.

Sharon: Hey, how was the party?

Nick: The party. Uh, the party was great until, uh, you know, sally decided to mix it up with phyllis.

Sharon: No, she didn’T. Oh, my gosh. What happened?

Nick: Uh, well, you remember when you, uh, dumped that entire pitcher of milk on my mom’s head?

Sharon: Yeah.

Nick: Something like that, but just, you know, substitute the milk for a champagne ice bucket, and in the middle of a big, giant party.

Sharon: At phyllis’s hotel? Oh, my gosh.

Nick: Yeah. Phyllis just keeps finding ways to surprise me.

Jack: What brings you by at this hour?

Phyllis: Well, I was driving by. I saw the light on.

Jack: Really?

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] I-I saw the text that you sent to kyle in our family group text chain, so I knew you were here alone, in this big, empty house. I thought you might be lonely. I came to say hi.

Victor: Please come in.

Sally: Thank you. You have a lovely home. I will admit that your text caught me by surprise, but who could turn down a request from the great victor newman?

Victor: Thank you for being so prompt.

Sally: So, why don’t you tell me what this is all about? Though I do have some idea.

Life…

provided by… when asthma symptoms strike, airways narrow.

Sally: So, I am guessing you called me here to talk about the launch party, the scene I made with phyllis. I’m not proud of that. But luckily I didn’t read anything about it in the press, so it seems like it didn’t have any effect on the positive reception that newman media received. And adam wasn’t angry about it. I mean, I personally think it livened things up a little bit.

[ Chuckles ]

Victor: You know, so far, my sole focus has been on the launch party for newman media. But now that that is behind us, I’d like to get to know you a little.

Sally: Okay.

Victor: Would you like a drink?

Sally: Sure. I had an amazing single-malt scotch with adam the other evening.

Victor: Uh-huh. Well, I think I know which one you mean. So, did adam introduce you to this?

Sally: I was already aware of it, vaguely. It’s not really something my budget has allowed me to indulge in.

Victor: Well, now, I would not underestimate your success. I mean, first you were an assistant to lauren fenmore, and then you became the head of jcv. Right? That’s the job that my granddaughter held before you.

Sally: [ Sighs ] So, that is what this is about. Summer.

Sharon: I don’t suppose i have to guess who started this phyllis/sally showdown.

Nick: I actually wasn’t there when it happened. And I know I’m not getting the full story from jack. He’s being very protective of phyllis, trying to downplay her role in the incident. Anyway, jack got phyllis out of there pretty quickly, and then adam took sally away, so…

Sharon: Adam? Oh, right. Sally works at newman media now.

Nick: Yeah, I’m pretty sure sally was there as his date.

Sharon: Adam and sally. Interesting. Well, don’t look at me like you expect me to have some deep feelings about it. I mean, I said “interesting.” That’s it. Don’t read more into it.

Nick: There was a time when i didn’t think you were gonna be able to, uh, you know, detach yourself from the mess that is adam’s life. But I thought that if anybody could do it, it would be rey. He could help you, you know? And you guys seem pretty happy right now.

Sharon: We are. Thank you.

Nick: But I also know when it comes to your history with adam, it’s never quite that simple.

Jack: Thank you for dropping by to check in on me.

Phyllis: Of course. I owe you. You stopped me from making a real mess of the evening. Actually, a bigger mess of the evening.

[ Chuckles ] And then you gave me your pocket square so I could clean off the champagne on my face.

Jack: It was my pleasure. And for the record, all in all, you showed admirable restraint.

Phyllis: [ Laughing ] Oh, really? That’s generous.

Jack: I’m always a softie where you’re concerned, always have been.

Phyllis: So…that text that you sent kyle. Did I sense a certain melancholy and wistfulness?

Jack: I found a toy that harrison left behind. And it prompted a text, and maybe I got a little too nostalgic.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Are you okay?

Jack: Yeah. I’m — I’m — I’m fine. I’m tired. I’m winding down with a glass of wine before I go to bed.

Phyllis: Alright. I’ll let you go to sleep.

Jack: No, no, no. No. I’d love for you to stay. Actually, I could — I could use a friend right now.

Phyllis: So, do you want mindless chatter or deep insight?

Jack: [ Chuckles ] You are never mindless. You are sharp. You are funny. You are outrageous sometimes, just for the sake of being outrageous, but never mindless.

Phyllis: Deep insight it is, then.

[ Chuckles ] Why don’t you tell me what’s really going on?

Jack: I don’t want to get all maudlin. I — I have had countless conversations with people about kyle and summer’s decision to move to milan with harrison, and I just had it again earlier this evening with lauren. In all those conversations, i keep saying the same thing — “I’m fine. Change is good. Life goes on.” But it’s all happened so fast, it’s been a little jarring.

Phyllis: Yeah, I do understand how you feel.

Jack: And now I keep having this constant argument with myself. A part of me says, insists i need to move on, get on my with my life. And I get angry that I can’T. And another side of me says, “why should I? We’re talking about my son. We’re talking about my grandson.” This house used to be filled with noise and love and… and now it’s not. And I don’t want to get used to the silence. I don’t want to get used to the emptiness of it all.

Phyllis: You’re right. This house was up to its ears in abbotts.

Jack: Yeah, but traci now comes and goes to new york, and ashley the same thing and paris. But now kyle and harrison are gone.

Phyllis: So, what I’m hearing from you is that you’re lonely.

Jack: You have no idea.

Sharon: Look, I have told adam that the past is the past and I don’t want to go back there. You know, I’m not secretly drawn to him. I’m committed to my marriage. Don’t look at me like that. I mean, I’m telling you the truth.

Nick: I believe you, okay? I — [ Sighs ] I know how important it is to set boundaries, but I know how tempting it must be to allow adam’s toxicity back into your life, you know? But adam has shown a different side of himself. He saved faith’s life. He gave her a kidney. He came back to — to get me when I was trapped in that building in kansas. I mean, so I allowed him to come back into my life. What I’m saying is, I understand how it’s not so simple for you and, uh, you know, also that he’s a source of tension in your marriage.

Sharon: Okay. I wouldn’t be able to admit this to anyone but you. And given that you have come around about adam, I know you understand.

Nick: I mean, I have cut adam a break, but we are far from best friends. But I know how hard it is to want to see the good in him while also drawing a line.

Sharon: Yeah. That’s my dilemma. Um…you know, I think that people, everyone, needs someone in their life who really supports them. And I’ve made myself that for adam. And I’ve paid the price, but he’s also proven me right. So I just… it’s really difficult for me to try to turn my back on him completely.

Nick: And rey understands that?

Sharon: Yeah, rey and I, we’ve — you know, we’ve worked things out, and we’ve re-committed to our marriage.

Nick: That’s not what i asked. Does rey understand that you can’t completely cut adam out of your life?

Sally: Your wife already communicated in no uncertain terms how she views my involvement with summer, and i assume that you feel the same way, so I’m just gonna save you a little bit of time. Message received.

Victor: You caused summer quite a bit of distress. And that upsets me, you know? Now, had I intervened earlier, things would have turned out differently.

Sally: That sounds like a threat.

Victor: It’s not a threat. You know, you and adam caused quite a stir at the party, yeah? I mean, you prompted phyllis to empty a bucket of ice water over your head.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Victor: You know, adam is involved in a rather delicate situation with his son, connor. Connor’s very aware of the tension between his mother and his father. It’s not good for him. He’s upset by that. And what you may consider just harmless flirtation and socializing could have unwanted consequences. You understand what I’m saying?

Sally: Yes. Chloe actually brought this up to me earlier. I don’t know the details, but of course I am sensitive to the situation. I’m sure adam loves his son.

Victor: Yes, very much.

Sally: And he wants to protect him and do what’s best for him.

Victor: Of course.

Sally: So then shouldn’t adam be the once to decide what that is? I mean, should you really be dictating your adult son’s personal life — or mine, for that matter?

Victor: Let me put this in terms that you can grasp. Do not use my son adam as a way to salvage your…lackluster career. And arguing with me would be the worst mistake yet.

Adam: I guess I missed the memo about this meeting. Front loader odor.

Victor: I invited ms. Spectra over because she needs to know certain things now that she is a member of newman media.

Adam: What kind of things?

Sally: About your son and what is going on between you and his mother.

Adam: Hmm. And why would you talk to her about connor?

Victor: Because I think she needs to know the whole situation.

Sally: Apparently, he doesn’t trust you to communicate this information yourself.

Victor: Now that you have all the information, I hope you make good use of it.

Sally: Am I being dismissed now that you’ve put me in my place?

Adam: Sally, you — you should go.

Sally: Thank you for the scotch.

Victor: You’re quite welcome.

[ Glass thuds ]

Adam: Why? Why did you feel compelled to dump all of this on her?

Victor: Son, I’ve been around, okay? I know that type. She’s a climber, social climber.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Victor: She’s trying to cozy up to you at the risk of pissing me off. And she hopes to come out on top. The question is, what is your motivation? You have talked for months about turning over a new leaf, to become a good father to connor. So, what the hell happened?

Sharon: My relationship with adam has changed significantly.

Nick: But adam is still a part of your life. Looks like he always will be. And rey knows that?

Sharon: Rey and I are as open and honest with each other as possible. And we get through the day like any other couple does. You understand. Things can’t be all smooth sailing with phyllis.

Nick: Actually, it kind of is right now.

Sharon: What’s different?

Nick: I don’t know. I stopped putting the brakes on her meddling. I stopped giving her ultimatums. I know phyllis means well, so I’m just trying to roll with it.

Sharon: You make that sound so easy.

Nick: I mean, it’s easier ’cause I made a choice to accept her for who she is. Oh, I know you have something to say about that.

Sharon: I just think — and all couples are different, but when a couple breaks up and then they get back together, things can be different for them. They can be better. I mean, as long as both of them agree on what they want. And it sounds like, uh, you and phyllis have that. It sounds like things are really good.

Nick: I know you a little too well. There’s something else on your mind. What is it you’re not saying?

Jack: Listen to me closely.

Phyllis: Thank you.

Jack: I don’t need you to fix this or tell me to look on the bright side. God, if anybody tells me that, I don’t know what I’M…

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? I’m not gonna tell you that. I’m not gonna be the one to tell you to look on the bright side. Okay? I just want to talk to you and — and listen to you.

Jack: Being lonely is embarrassing.

Phyllis: No, it’s not.

Jack: It is.

Phyllis: It’s human.

Jack: I’m telling you, it feels like I’ve failed at life. I don’t know where it went wrong exactly, but after a big, full life, I find myself completely alone.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? You’re not alone. You have so many people who love you, myself included. That doesn’t preclude you from feeling lonely. I understand that. I mean, my goodness, you can feel so alone in a family. You can feel alone in a relationship. That’s just life. You know? We’re born alone. We die alone.

Jack: [ Laughs ] Is this supposed to be a pep talk?

[ Both laugh ]

Phyllis: It’s a reality check. I mean, I think that’s why we try so hard to create relationships — you know what I mean? — And connections with people.

[ Sighs ] That’s why we work so hard at romance.

Jack: Why we start a romance with the wrong person, hoping they’ll magically turn into the right person?

Phyllis: Exactly. Are you talking about sally? She’s definitely the wrong person, but sally is so thoroughly sally, I don’t know who you were hoping she would turn out to be.

Jack: You want an honest answer? I guess I was hoping she’d turn into you.

[ “The addams family” theme playing ]

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Sally: Set me up with the best scotch you got.

Matt: Sure thing. What’s the special occasion?

Sally: I am moving up in the world.

Matt: Oh, yeah?

Sally: Yes. It appears as though I’ve officially become the target of the newmans. Nikki newman ripped into me at the launch party for the company that I am now working for, and victor newman just summoned me to his home. Yeah, he did that thing that rich and powerful men do when they want something from you, only it’s supposed to feel like your idea. In this case, he wants me to stop seeing his son. Not that we’re seeing each other in that kind of way.

Matt: His father apparently thinks otherwise.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I am not sure what to think anymore. To my boss’s father. The jerk.

Adam: You are overreacting to the situation with sally. I assume that you resent her because of, uh, everything that went down with summer.

Victor: Son, this isn’t about summer. This is about a grasping social climber who was kicked out of L.A., Fired by lauren, and is now latching on to you to use you.

Adam: She’s not using me. I’d never that happen.

Victor: The situation between you and chelsea is not the best. Connor is in an emotionally fragile state. He doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going between the two of you. I mean, he’s confused now. He feels the tension between father and mother.

Adam: I’m in tune with what is going on with him. And it has nothing to do with sally.

Victor: I’ve been impressed with your demeanor both professionally and privately. But you’re slipping now. You’re going back to your old ways. You’re gallivanting with that dame around town, rubbing it in people’s faces, trying to elicit some kind of reaction, not thinking about the consequences.

Adam: I — connor is first and foremost in my mind. I will protect my child always. Okay? I don’t need you to go behind my back and micromanage my life. That is you slipping into old behaviors. It’s you trying to control me in the same way that has driven us apart in the past.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Come on. Tell me what you’re really thinking. We’re being honest here, right?

Sharon: It’s nothing all that deep. I mean, you said it yourself. You chose the kind of relationship you wanted to have with phyllis, what you wanted it to be like this time and what you didn’t want it to be like. Less of the crazy intensity you had last time and — well, at least the kind that would make you put your fist through a wall.

Nick: Yeah. Wound up hurting a lot of people I care about, particularly you.

Sharon: I didn’t bring it up to talk about us. We don’t have to revisit that.

Nick: Alright, maybe it’s just, you know — I don’t know — phyllis and I are older and wiser now. Maybe we’ve found a way to be in a relationship in a more serene way ’cause, you know, we get each other and it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sharon: I agree. It doesn’t have to be complicated. But I understand why you would choose something easy and comfortable.

Nick: Whoa. Okay, so, you’re saying I’m looking for the path of least resistance. It’s not real love and commitment.

Sharon: No. I didn’t mean that.

Nick: But something’s missing. That I’m settling?

Phyllis: Well, sally could never be me.

Jack: [ Laughs ]

Phyllis: Not on her best day could she be me.

[ Chuckles ] You don’t want another me.

Jack: Oh, don’t be so sure of that.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m sure of it. There’s a reason our marriage didn’t work out.

Jack: Yeah, we went through a lot, more than our share of heartache, but also some great times. Some of the best times in my life. And you are still the most captivating, fascinating woman I have never known…and sometimes so gorgeous, it hurts.

Phyllis: Jack —

Jack: No, let me finish. You are also complicated and frustrating and hot-headed and careless and…

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Jack: But all in all, a pretty spectacular package.

Phyllis: Ah. Well, you have had too much to drink.

Jack: You know, I keep thinking maybe — maybe the fact that we’ve spent so much time together lately, I… maybe the reason I didn’t move on with my romantic life was… ’cause I already was with the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. Maybe you set the bar too high, red.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Listen, I don’t — I don’t think you should say things that you might not mean.

Jack: I’m not saying this because I’ve had too much to drink. I’m saying it because it’s true. I have never stopped loving you. And I don’t think I ever will. Come on. You can’t be that shocked.

Phyllis: I don’t know what to say.

Jack: Let me be clear about this. I’m not acting on any of these feelings. I know our time is over. I know you’ve moved on. Life has moved on. I know you’re happy with…

Phyllis: With nick. That’s a fact.

Jack: Well, here’s another fact. I still love you… truly, deeply. And I have to live with that. I can’t stop it. It won’t go away.

Give every morning a

fresh start

Sharon: I didn’t mean to imply that you were settling with phyllis.

Nick: You sure about that?

Sharon: Yeah. I was just making an observation.

Nick: Ah, but you said “comfortable” and “easy.” I mean, don’t take this the wrong way, but could I say the same thing about you and your relationship with rey?

Sharon: Rey and I — you know, we get each other, like you and phyllis do. And, you know, it’s good to share trust and friendship in any relationship. In my opinion, it’s very important. And I’m glad that you and phyllis have gotten to that point and that you’re happy — ’cause that’s all that matters, that you’re happy.

Nick: Well, I’m happy that you’re happy.

Sharon: I got to go. It’s getting late. Hey, um… you want to help me close up?

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Wow. Um…

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Nick: You know what? Sure. I’ve done it a hundred times. I know the drill.

Phyllis: Okay, here’s some water. I want you to hydrate or else —

[ Glass thuds ]

[ Door closes ]

Sally: Well, adam, your loss. Could have been fun.

[ Glass thuds ]

[ Sighs ]

Adam: My father made his point. Now I want to make mine.

[ Door bangs ]

[ Both breathing heavily ]

[ Door slams ] Sally… sally…

Adam: Sally? Sally? Sally! Hey.

Sally: [ Clears throat ]

Adam: Are you so mad that you’re pretending not to hear me?

Sally: No, I —

[ Clears throat ] Just distracted. So, why are you here? Still fresh

Adam: [ Sighs ] I’m really sorry about my father, the way that he called you over to the house and the things that he said.

Sally: Yeah. I admit, it felt a little bit like being called to the principal’s office.

Adam: [ Sighs ] He was totally out of line.

Sally: I’m really glad that you feel that way.

Adam: [ Sighs ] But when we were alone, he got me to really look at the situation, and I have re-evaluated.

Sally: Re-evaluated what, exactly?

Adam: I don’t think that we should see each other outside of the office anymore.

Sally: “Should.”

[ Scoffs ] That’s a word that I have eliminated from my vocabulary. You either choose to do something or you don’T. There is no “should” or “shouldn’T.” No acting a certain way because that’s what’s expected of you.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Sally: You decide what you want, no matter how people are going to react. No matter how far outside it is from what’s considered “socially acceptable.” And if people don’t like it? That’s their problem. To hell with ’em.

Victor: That woman threw a drink into Phyllis’s face at an event that you and I had been planning. If I were you, I’d see to it that she seeks employment elsewhere, okay?

Adam: Maybe Phyllis had it coming.

Victor: This a joke to you or what?

Adam: Sally let her temper get the best of her after Phyllis provoked her. It was both of their faults.

Victor: Can you blame Phyllis after what that woman has done to Summer?

Adam: Bottom line — I’m not interested in getting involved in their personal details, okay? I’m focused on business.

Victor: You’re focusing on monkey business. This is the second night you’re spending with this woman.

Adam: I’m not “spending the night” with her. We’re grabbing a bite. It’s a working dinner.

Victor: Working dinner, huh? Is that what they call it now? If I were you, son, I would strategize with me how to defeat ChanceCom.

***************************

Elena: So, tell me about the dress.

Victoria: Well, um, I haven’t nailed down a designer yet, but I’m waiting to talk to Summer’s boss — Angelina Marchetti. I’m not holding my breath. I know she’s really in demand. She might not have time to do it, so I might have to move on as the date approaches.

Elena: Ugh, that is such a hard decision. Honestly, the dress is the most important part. [ Laughter ] You laugh, but it’s true. Have you decided on a style yet?

Victoria: Oh, nothing over the top, but at the same time, the aesthetic of the ceremony is certainly not minimalistic.

Elena: I totally get it. This wedding is gonna infuse so much joie de vivre. You need a dress that goes in line with that.

Ashland: Yes! Joie de vivre. That is exactly the spirit of this event — the joy of life.

Young & The Restless Update

Y&R logo

Recap written by Christine

Jack was on his way to bed when he found one of Harrison’s army men. He wistfully picked it up, then he grabbed his phone.

Phyllis found Adam sitting in the Grand Phoenix lounge. She asked him where his she-devil was, and he asked why, so she could douse her with another champagne bucket? Phyllis blamed Sally. Phyllis said she knew this new and improved version of Adam Newman wouldn’t last. She asserted that Sally would’ve left town if he didn’t allow Chloe to hire her. He said he was letting Chloe give Sally a second chance. He thought Phyllis should be in favor of those, since she’d had a few. She countered that he’d had more than her, and he replied that it wasn’t a contest. She asked why he was keeping Sally here after she ran Summer out of town. From what Adam heard, Summer was doing well in Milan. He just wanted to have a drink, without the drama, unless Phyllis wanted to tell him her real issue with Sally. Phyllis denied having a secret issue with Sally. Adam thought that Phyllis saw a bit of herself in Sally. Phyllis decided to leave, rather than dignify that with a response. Adam said that whenever Phyllis swanned out of the room without getting the last word, he knew he hit a nerve. Phyllis kept walking, and Adam grinned.

Phyllis showed up at Jack’s unexpectedly. She said she saw the text he sent Kyle in the family group chat, so she knew he was here, alone in this big empty house. She thought he might be lonely, so she came to say hi. He thanked her for checking on him. She felt she owed him because he stopped her from making a bigger mess of the evening at the party, and he gave her a pocket square to clean up the champagne on her face. He believed she’d shown admirable restraint. She thought he was being generous, and he said he was always a softy where she was concerned. She asked about the text he sent Kyle. He explained that he got a little too nostalgic after finding a toy Harrison left. She asked if he was okay. He was fine, but tired. She said she’d go, but he quickly asked her to stay, because he could use a friend. Phyllis asked Jack what was really going on. He didn’t want to get all maudlin. He kept telling people he was fine with Kyle and Summer moving to Italy with Harrison, but it all happened so fast. It was jarring. Phyllis understood. Part of him felt like he should move on with his life, and he was angry that he couldn’t, but the other part of him asked why he should move on – that was his son and grandson. This house used to be filled with noise and love, and now it wasn’t. He fought back tears. He didn’t want to get used to the silence and emptiness of it all. Phyllis said this house used to be filled with Abbotts. He said Traci and Ashley came and went and Kyle and Harrison were gone. Jack was very lonely.

Jack was adamant that he didn’t need Phyllis to fix this or tell him to look on the bright side. She said she’d wouldn’t say that. She just wanted to talk to him and listen. He was embarrassed about being lonely, even though she told him he shouldn’t be. He felt like he’d failed at life. He’d had a big full life, and now he was completely alone. She said he had so many people who loved him, herself included. She clarified that she knew that didn’t preclude you from being lonely – you could feel alone in a family or in a relationship. You’re born alone and you die alone. He laughed and asked if this was supposed to be a pep talk. She said it was a reality check. She thought that was why people tried so hard to form relationships and connections and why people worked so hard at romance. “Why we start a romance with the wrong person hoping they’ll magically turn into the right person?,” he asked. She assumed this was about Sally, who was definitely the wrong person. She couldn’t imagine who he was hoping Sally would turn out to be, though. “I guess I was hoping she would turn into you,” he admitted. Phyllis said Sally could never be her, even on Sally’s best day.

Phyllis told Jack that he didn’t want another Phyllis. There was a reason their marriage didn’t work out. Jack admitted they went through their share of heartache, but they’d also had some of the best times of his life. He said she was also the most captivating fascinating woman he’d ever known, and sometimes she was so gorgeous it hurt. He thought she was also frustrating, complicated, hot-headed and careless. All in all, she was a spectacular package. Maybe it was because they’d spent so much time together lately, but he’d been thinking that maybe he didn’t move on with his romantic life, because he’d already been with the most amazing woman he’d ever known. She suggested that was the wine talking and that he didn’t mean what he was saying. He insisted that he really felt this way. “I have never stopped loving you and I don’t think I ever will,” he said. She was caught off guard, but he didn’t think she should be that shocked. He made it clear that he knew she’d moved on and that their time was over. He knew she was happy with… “With Nick. That’s a fact,” she said. He told her he truly deeply loved her, and he couldn’t stop. Phyllis went to get Jack some water so he could hydrate after his wine. When she returned, he was asleep. She covered him in a throw blanket, then she knelt next to him and put her hand on his arm for a moment. Phyllis quietly left.

Sally told Victor that his home was lovely. His invitation caught her by surprise, but who could say no to the great Victor Newman? She assumed she was summoned here because of what happened at the launch party. He clarified that he wanted to get to know her a little better. He offered her a drink, and she mentioned the single malt scotch she had with Adam the other day. He poured the drink and asked if Adam introduced her to it. She was vaguely aware of it before, but it was out of her price range. He noted that she’d gone from Lauren’s assistant to head of JCV, a job his granddaughter held first. Sally assumed this was about Summer.

Sally said that Nikki already conveyed how she felt about Sally, and she assumed Victor shared his wife’s sentiment. Victor stated that he was upset that she caused Summer distress. He said if he’d intervened earlier, things would’ve turned out differently. She took that as a threat, but he said it wasn’t. He stated that she and Adam caused quite a stir at the party, and she prompted Phyllis to empty a bucket of water over her head. He said Adam was in a delicate situation with his son, and what Sally might consider harmless flirtation could have unwanted consequences. Sally mentioned that Chloe told her this earlier. Sally was sensitive to the situation, and she knew Adam wanted the best for his son. She suggested that Adam should be the one to make decisions for his son. She asked Victor if he should be dictating his adult son’s personal life, or hers, for that matter. He told her not to use his son as a way to salvage her lackluster career. “And arguing with me would be the worst mistake yet,” he added. Adam walked in and said he guessed he missed the memo about this meeting.

Victor said he invited Sally over because she needed to know certain things now that she was a member of Newman Media. Adam asked what kind of things. Sally said it was about Connor and what was going on between Adam and Chelsea. Adam asked Victor why he’d talk to Sally about Connor. Victor thought Sally needed to know the whole story. “Apparently he doesn’t trust you to communicate this information yourself,” Sally added. Victor hoped Sally made use of this information. Sally asked if she was being dismissed now that she was put in her place. Adam told Sally that she should go. Sally thanked Victor for the scotch, and she left. Adam asked Victor why he felt compelled to dump this on her. Victor knew Sally’s type – she was a social climber who was trying to cozy up to Adam. Victor said Adam talked for months about turning over a new leaf and becoming a good father to Connor, so what the hell happened?

Adam thought Victor was overreacting to the situation with Sally. He assumed Victor resented Sally because of the thing with Summer. Victor said this wasn’t about Summer, it was about Sally, a grasping social climber, latching onto Adam to use him. Adam said that Sally wasn’t using him – he’d never let that happen. Victor said Connor was fragile, and he felt the tension between his parents. Adam asserted that he was in tune to what was going on with his son, and it wasn’t about Sally. Victor had been impressed with Adam before, but now he thought Adam was going back to his old ways. “You’re gallivanting with that dame around town, rubbing it in people’s faces, trying to elicit some kind of reaction, not thinking about the consequences” Victor said. Adam was adamant that he’d always protect his child, and he didn’t need Victor micromanaging his life. Adam said Victor was the one slipping into old behaviors and trying to control Adam, which drove them apart in the past.

Nick and Sharon were happy to see each other when he went to Crimson Lights. He mentioned that Summer sent pictures of her and Harrison. Sharon was interested, so Nick showed them to her. He was about to show pictures of his nephew, Dominic, and Sharon said she met him in person when Abby brought him home from the hospital. He was adorable. Nick was glad Dom was healthy, given how he came into the world. He asked how Mariah was. Sharon thought the ordeal affected Mariah in ways she didn’t realize, but she had a strong loving support system. Nick hoped he was included in that group. Sharon said of course – Nick was family. She mentioned the New Hope – Newman Media partnership. She couldn’t get over him working with Adam. He said they’d been on their best behavior. She thought that it was incredible that Nick was giving Adam a chance to prove he changed – it was a testament to the kind of man Nick was. She asked how the party went, and Nick said it was great until Sally mixed it up with Phyllis. “Oh my gosh, what happened?,” Sharon asked. Nick reminded Sharon of the time she dumped a pitcher milk on Nikki’s head. He said it was something like that, except the milk was a giant champagne ice bucket, and it was at a giant party.

Sharon assumed she knew who started the Phyllis/Sally showdown. Nick wasn’t there when it happened, and Jack had been acting protective of Phyllis, downplaying her role in it. He said Jack got Phyllis out of there, and Adam took Sally away. Sharon was startled Adam was part of it, then she assumed he intervened as Sally’s boss. Nick clarified that he was pretty sure Adam was Sally’s date. Sharon said that was interesting. He looked at her expectantly until she told him not to expect some deeper feelings from her about it. “I said ‘Interesting.’ That’s it. Don’t read more into it.” Nick said there was a time he wasn’t sure she’d be able to detach from the mess that was Adam’s life, but he thought if anyone could help her do it, it was Rey. He thought they seemed happy. She said they were. He also knew that when it came to her history with Adam, it was never quite that simple.

Sharon already told Adam that the past was the past. She wasn’t secretly drawn to him. She was committed to her marriage. The way Nick looked at Sharon prompted her to insist that she was telling the truth. He believed her, but he knew she must be tempted to let Adam back into her life. He said Adam showed a different side – he saved Faith’s life, and he came back and rescued Nick in Kansas. Nick allowed Adam into his life. He understood it wasn’t so simple for Sharon, and he knew Adam was a source of tension in her marriage. Sharon couldn’t admit this to anyone except Nick, and given that he came around on Adam, she knew he’d understand. He said that he and Adam were far from best friends, but he understood how hard it was to want to see the good in Adam while also drawing a line. Sharon thought everyone needed someone in their life who really supported them, and she’d made herself that person for Adam. She paid the price, but Adam also proved her right. It was really difficult to try and completely turn her back on him. Nick asked if Rey understood. Sharon said she and Rey recommitted to their marriage, which Nick noted was not an answer to his question. He asked again if Rey understood that Sharon couldn’t completely cut Adam out of her life.

Sharon said that her relationship with Adam had changed significantly. “But Adam is still a part of your life. Looks like he always will be. And Rey knows that?,” Nick replied. She said she and Rey were as open and honest with each other as possible. She was sure Nick understood – things couldn’t be all smooth sailing with Phyllis. He said it actually kind of was. He knew Phyllis meant well so he’d stopped trying to put the breaks on her meddling. “You make that sound so easy,” Sharon said. He replied that he’d made a choice to accept Phyllis for who she was. Sharon conceded that all couples were different, but she did think that when a couple broke up and got back together, things could be better for them, as long as they were in agreement on what they wanted. Nick said he knew Sharon well enough to know something else was on her mind. Sharon said it wasn’t all that deep. She noted that he chose the sort of relationship he wanted with Phyllis – not with the crazy intensity he had last time, at least not the type that made him want to put his fist through the wall. He said last time he hurt a lot of people he cared about, particularly Sharon. Sharon said they didn’t have to revisit that time. He said he and Phyllis were older now, and maybe they figured out how to be in a relationship in a serene way. It didn’t have to be complicated.

Sharon understood why Nick would choose something easy and comfortable. He thought she meant he was looking for the path of least resistance, not real love and commitment. That wasn’t what Sharon meant. He inferred that she thought he was settling for Phyllis and that something was missing. Sharon didn’t mean to imply that. She was just making an observation. “But you said comfortable and easy,” he noted. He didn’t want her to take it the wrong way, but he could say the same thing about her and Rey. Sharon said she and Rey got each other, like Nick and Phyllis did. She felt it was good for any relationship to have friendship and trust. She was glad Nick and Phyllis were at that point and that they were happy. Nick was happy that Sharon was happy. Sharon had to go, as it was late. She asked if he wanted to help her close, and he laughed and said yes. They kept stealing looks at each other as they tidied up. When he turned out the lights, their eyes met for a moment, before she turned and kept cleaning. He watched her.

Sally went to Society and ordered their best scotch. The bartender asked if it was a special occasion. She said she was moving up in the world – apparently she’d become a target of the Newmans. Nikki ripped into her at the launch party, and Victor just summoned her to his home. She said Victor did that thing rich and powerful men do when they want something, but it’s supposed to feel like your idea. She toasted to her boss’s father, the jerk. Sally finished her drink and said it was Adam’s loss.

Sally got up and when she turned around, Adam was there. “My father made his point. Now I want to make mine,” he said, then he pulled her into a deep kiss. They went to the hotel, and they were so overcome with desire for each other that they barely stopped kissing as they unlocked the door to their suite. Adam kept calling Sally’s name, and this snapped her out of her fantasy. The kiss and trip to The Grand Phoenix never happened. She and Adam were still at Society. Adam asked if Sally was so mad she was pretending not to hear him. She said she was just distracted. He apologized for his father. However, talking to Victor got Adam to reevaluate, and he didn’t think he and Sally should see each other outside the office anymore. “Should. That’s a word that I have eliminated from my vocabulary,” she said.

Nick went to Phyllis’s room, and she was already in bed, seemingly asleep. He sat down on the bed and looked deep in thought. The rest of Sally’s speech to Adam played as a voice over on top of Nick and Phyllis’s scene. “You either choose to do something or you don’t. There is no should or shouldn’t,” Sally said. Nick glanced at Phyllis, who faced away from him. She opened her eyes. Sally’s statement continued: “No acting a certain way because that’s what’s expected of you.”

Jack was shown waking up, as Sally said “You decide what you want, no matter how people are going to react.”

No matter how far outside it is from what is considered socially acceptable,” Sally stated as Sharon was shown putting the closed sign in the coffeehouse window.

And if people don’t like it? That’s their problem. To hell with ‘em,” Sally was shown whispering into saying in Adam’s ear. She then left the restaurant.

Lily: Oh, my gosh! Look at that face!

Devon: I know. He’s a handsome guy.

Lily: So cute. And I love his name — dominic, with a “d,” in your honor.

Devon: Right?

Lily: Yeah.

Devon: That was unexpected. I didn’t — it was very special.

Lily: My gosh. And what a crazy story. It’s like, you guys just found mariah, and then the baby’s coming.

Devon: Oh, you have no idea. I have no idea what we would have done if I didn’t get nate on the phone to coach abby and me through everything.

Lily: Well, I’m sure the three of you would have figured it out.

Devon: Well, I’m glad i didn’t have to.

[ Chuckles ]

Lily: So, what was it like bringing a new life into this world?

Devon: It was incredible. And, uh, abby was amazing through it all. She stayed calm and reassuring.

Lily: Yeah. What about mariah?

Devon: I mean, what can you say about her? She was…heroic. She stayed strong through everything that she went through, from being kidnapped to trapped in a room for a weeks.

Lily: I am so happy that you and abby made it there in time for the delivery ’cause she must have been terrified.

Devon: Oh, yeah. It was just — it’s — it was all a blur, you know? But I will definitely never forget the feeling of just holding dominic in my arms for the first moments of his life.

Lily: Man, what a thrill to experience that.

Devon: I know. Yeah. I knew that I would feel a connection with him because of our dna, but this is just — this is something else.

Abby: Well, can’t we just get someone to fill in, like a bartender or something? No, no, no, we cannot go without a hostess. Okay, yeah, just — just figure it out and call me back.

Mariah: Problem?

Abby: [ Sighs ] We are short-staffed at society. One of our hostesses called in sick.

Mariah: Oh, bummer.

Abby: Yeah. You know, if tessa didn’t have a gig tonight, I would ask her to pick up a shift [Chuckles] For old time’s sake.

Mariah: Well, if you need someone to watch the baby, I can do it.

Abby: No, no, that’s okay. I-I don’t want to impose.

Mariah: It’s — really, it’s not a big deal, you know? He’s crashed out, so I’d probably just be sitting here doing what I was gonna do anyway, reading a book, maybe watching a little tv.

Abby: [ Sighs ] That’s very sweet. I just — it feels like too much.

Mariah: Abby, you’re not asking me to do anything. I volunteered. And I know you won’t make a habit of it, so… really. I’m happy to do it.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

Elena: Hey.

Victoria: Oh, hello.

Nate: Hey.

Ashland: So glad you could make it.

Nate: Hey. Well, thank you for the invite.

Victoria: Uh, ashland, this is dr. Elena dawson. This is my fiancé — ashland locke.

Elena: It’s lovely to meet you.

Ashland: The pleasure’s all mine.

Elena: You know, it’s been ages since we’ve both had two nights off in a row.

Nate: Almost never happens.

Elena: Yeah. So we get to enjoy and relax tonight.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: Fabulous.

Ashland: Well, we have some appetizers on the way. We should probably get you some drinks.

Nate: Great idea.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Looks like the initial reviews are positive. “Newman media launch event set just the right tone.”

Victor: Ah. You mean not even a mention of phyllis dumping an ice bucket over that woman?

Adam: No. I haven’t seen it mentioned yet.

Victor: You mean chanccomm hasn’t said anything?

Adam: Wasn’t that hard to suppress.

Victor: Whoa. One viral video would have undermined everything you and i were trying to accomplish, you know.

Adam: Uh-huh. Um, I actually — I have to get going. I have dinner plans.

Victor: The meeting with northern brands? You know, that cfo had actually a rather interesting idea.

Adam: Uh, we have a video chat scheduled later this week to go over it, so… anyway, I’ll see you tomorrow.

Victor: Hey, son. You’re not meeting that woman, are you?

Adam: Which woman would that be?

Victor: You know, that spectra woman, whatever the hell her name is.

Adam: [ Sighs ] As a matter of fact, I am. Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete,

Jack: What a lovely surprise.

Lauren: I probably should have called first.

Jack: Nonsense. I’m always happy to see you. What brings you by?

Lauren: Well, michael was working late. He’s preparing for the sutton ames trial. And I was on my own, and i thought, “hmm.” Would you like to join me for dinner?

Jack: Well, I’m not sure i want to go back out, but I’d love the company. How’s chinese takeout sound?

Lauren: Ooh. Sounds delicious.

If I were you, son, I would strategize with me how to defeat chanccomm.

Adam: You’re just — you’re just not gonna let this go, are you?

Victor: No.

Adam: Fine. We can talk about it, but not right now because I’m late. Sally’s probably waiting for me. So I will see you tomorrow. Alright?

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Ashland: What do you say later on we go back to victoria’s hot tub?

Victoria: Do you want to have a nightcap?

Elena: Yeah.

Nate: You have a hot tub?

Victoria: Yeah, it’s just one of those above-the-ground ones.

Elena: I thought you didn’t even…

Nate: This latest generation of robots gives us the kind of precision we could only dream about. Look, the nav-system uses 3-d imaging, which offers surgical teams mind-blowing, real-time mapping capabilities.

Elena: He means there’s no lag time with the video, so we can see what we’re doing while we’re doing it.

Nate: Sorry. I geek out a little bit.

Victoria: And this is all happening inside the patient through a tiny incision?

Nate: It’s cutting edge of what’s possible now. And it’s the type of technology we’ll be able to purchase thanks to your generous donation.

Ashland: Well, this is really exciting stuff. However —

Nate: Enough with the shop talk. Got it.

[ Chuckles ] I’ll send you written updates on how the hospital uses the funds.

Ashland: That works for me.

Elena: So, now that our professional lives are off the table, what should we talk about?

Ashland: Anything and everything, as long as we steer clear of my situation.

Elena: Actually, there is something that I want to discuss — your wedding plans.

Victoria: Oh. Well, um, that just happens to be my favorite subject.

[ Laughs ] I looked on ancestry and just started digging

Victoria: Well, the details are — well, they’re still coming together.

Nate: Sounds like you thought of everything.

Elena: Yeah, it’s like the ultimate destination wedding. An italian palazzo? How dreamy is that?

Nate: I imagine it must be a challenge trying to organize an event this elaborate from another continent?

Victoria: Well, yes. Thankfully, my mother’s found someone there to coordinate it.

Adam: Well, well. Good evening, everyone.

Nate: Adam.

Elena: Hi.

Victoria: I see you’re with sally. Maybe you’ve finally found your perfect match.

Adam: It certainly seems you two have. I couldn’t be happier for you both.

Ashland: Thank you, adam. Enjoy your evening.

Adam: You too. Sally. I’m late. I know. I’m sorry. I, um — I got held up at the office.

Sally: It’s no problem.

Your table’s ready. If you’ll follow me… enjoy.

Adam: Thank you.

Sally: Well, you get such a kick of that, don’t you? Tweaking them, not letting their little slings and arrows get to you.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] It’s a game. You develop a thick skin.

Sally: I think there’s a lot I can learn from you.

[ Chuckles ]

Lily: So, tell me about the trip that amanda’s taken.

Devon: Oh, yeah. She and naya and imani decided they need a getaway.

Lily: What? That’s a big step for them.

Devon: It’s a huge step. I think it’ll be a good way for them to heal some wounds. You know, this whole saga with sutton and his involvement in richard’s death has — it’s really taken a toll on them.

Lily: Well, I mean, those are big things to get over, but I’m glad that they’re trying to, especially as a family.

Devon: Yeah, and it meant a whole lot to amanda because they suggested it.

Lily: Yeah, I’m sure.

Devon: So, where’s billy tonight?

Lily: Um, he is at home with the kids.

Devon: Nice.

Lily: I wanted to, uh, give them some alone time. I know how much they love having their dad all to themselves. So, I get to have time with you, hang out, catch up.

Devon: Isn’t it crazy how we have so much family stuff going on in our lives right now?

Lily: Oh, my gosh, I know, right?

Devon: It’s wild. You’re taking care of billy’s kids. We’re both looking after moses.

Lily: Mm-hmm. It takes a village, you know, which we’re all a part of. And now dominic and his parents are, too.

Devon: Yeah. And chance and I are technically family.

Lily: Yeah, through the katherine connection. Going strong.

Devon: And that’s the main reason, too, why I wanted to be the donor, is so that dominic could have that connection.

Lily: Well, now you and chance can work together to make sure that he’s just surrounded by nothing but love, which i know is what you wanted.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: But I’m also sensing a little shift in you since the baby’s been born?

Mariah: Okay, bowie. Okay. Shh! I know! I know. I know. I know. I know. Come on, kid, you got to work with me here. I changed your diaper. I sang you a lullaby. Come on. Please. What do you need? What can I do for you, okay? You — you won’t take your bottle, so — shh. Sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-shh. Please, I would do anything for you. I would do anything in the world for you. You know that.

[ Sighing ] Oh, god.

[]

Lauren: Ooh. Okay. Spicy beef for you.

Jack: Cashew chicken for you.

Lauren: That’s right!

Jack: Fantastic. Thank you.

Lauren: Okay. So, you were saying?

Jack: Oh, I was saying harrison apparently loves pizza in italy even more than he loves pizza here. Summer sent me this wonderful video of him helping her cook.

Lauren: Uh, “helping” being a relative term when you’re talking about a 3-year-old.

Jack: Actually, you’d be amazed. This kid is ahead of the curve. Now, they have this little place outside milan, and it has an outdoor pizza oven. And he was adding the cheese just so.

Lauren: Aww. Sounds so adorable.

Jack: Most amazing thing about this kid is he is adaptable. I mean, he has adjusted to life in europe in no time flat.

Lauren: Well, that’s what kids do. They’re really good at adapting. But he must miss his mom. I mean, they were so attached.

Jack: Yeah, that was the one authentic thing about that woman. She was committed to her little boy, fiercely so, it turned out.

Lauren: Well, I almost felt sorry for her. I don’t think she knew what she was getting herself into, taking on phyllis.

Jack: No, and I regret ever pressuring phyllis to lay off of her and sally, but her instincts were exactly on target, as usual.

Lauren: Yeah. Yeah. Our dear friend has a real gift for being able to read people.

Jack: And now summer and kyle owe their happiness to her.

Lauren: That is true. And phyllis will never let them forget that.

Jack: Oh, you can bet she won’T.

[ Both laugh ]

Nate: So, they’re playing the processional. All the guests are standing up, looking towards the back of the church at the bride’s father, who is standing there alone in the vestibule, wondering where the heck his daughter is.

Victoria: Uh-oh.

Ashland: Had she fled the premises?

Nate: No, nothing that dramatic. Apparently, she had went back to the bride’s room for something blue and told her attendants to go on ahead. Well, as she was rushing up the stairs in her high heels, she falls and twists her ankle.

Victoria: Oh, no!

Nate: Yes. The poor groom is dying a thousand deaths, thinking he’s been stood up at the altar.

[ Chuckles ] Well, long story short, the bride was found. I grabbed my medical bag and taped up her ankle. The ceremony went on as planned. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to join in on the electric slide.

[ Laughter ]

Ashland: Well, it seems like you’re the right man to have on hand in a crisis.

Nate: Always pays to have a doctor in the house. Which reminds me of the time i was a groomsman for one of my college buddies —

Elena: Alright, no more, no more, no more.

[ Laughter ] Enough wedding horror stories. That’s the last thing we need to hear.

Victoria: Well, I could tell a few of my own, so this is good. I’m taking notes on how to avoid disaster so that our day will be perfect.

Ashland: Mwah!

Sally: I am really glad that we downshifted from a date to a working dinner.

Adam: You are, huh?

Sally: Yeah. And we can ignore all those “what not to do on a date” rules. Like, I wore my comfy shoes. And you were 20 minutes late.

Adam: Okay, those are not comfy shoes. And I’m sorry about that.

Sally: It’s fine. Really. This is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s better than if you bailed. And I’m guessing there was pressure on you to do that.

Adam: Um…

Sally: Yeah, that’s what i thought. It’s fine. Really. This is not my first time hanging out with a real sob — son of a billionaire…

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: …Who didn’t realize he was one growing up.

Adam: Really? You don’t say.

Sally: Yeah. There’s a lot more of you out there than you might think. You could start a club. Or a support group.

Adam: Uh, I think that we should get down to business. Did you, um — you bring some sample designs?

Sally: Mnh-mnh. You’re gonna have to wait on that ’cause I’m starving since you were —

Adam: Yes. Late. Sorry…again.

Elena: Cooking podcasts. I’m obsessed.

Victoria: Oh, my god.

[ Chuckling ] Me too!

Elena: Really?

Victoria: Yes! The more complicated, the better.

Elena: What? I didn’t know you liked to cook.

Victoria: No, I hate it. I’m terrible.

Ashland: Oh, don’t listen to her. She makes a fine grilled cheese.

Victoria: Well, I mean, only if I’m really paying attention, but if I try to get too fancy, then forget it.

Elena: I totally get that.

Victoria: It’s like that, you know, fantasy element, creating the perfect dish with that wild presentation.

Elena: Like an edible flower sprinkled on a plate?

Victoria: Yes, exactly that.

Elena: I’m an okay cook, and I kind of enjoy it, but, honestly, who has the time?

Victoria: Mm.

Elena: I’m lucky if I can heat up my takeout before devouring it.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: And my former roommate, the chef, would be appalled if she saw the way I’ve been eating lately.

Nate: Mnh, I beg to differ. Lola would be impressed as hell with what you’re doing with your time. You’re making a huge difference in a lot of lives.

Elena: Mm.

Victoria: Well, I am gonna go freshen up.

Elena: I think I’m gonna join you.

Ashland: That’s the face of a man who knows precisely how lucky he is.

Nate: I certainly do.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: Amanda asked me that same question — if I regret stepping up to be the donor or, you know, a part of dom’s extended family. And my answer is no. I knew how important it was for abby and chance to start a family, and I’m still happy that I was able to help them do it.

Lily: Yeah, so am I, but you know if your answer were different, I wouldn’t judge you, right?

Devon: Yeah, of course I do.

Lily: ‘Cause I know what it’s like to be in abby’s shoes, you know, needing a surrogate. So I know the thoughts that can go through your head, and I want you to know I’m here if you ever want to talk about any of it.

Devon: I don’t know. Just when I think of that first moment that I held dominic and when I heard him take his first few breaths, you know, in life, I — I just remember I had that thought and that feeling of, “this is it, and this is — this is what it’s really like to be a father.” And, you know, it just brought up a lot of emotions.

Lily: Yeah, well, especially ’cause you should have been a father awhile ago. You know, how could you not think about hillary and the baby that you lost?

Devon: Yeah. I mean, I’m — I’m sure she’s smiling, looking down, proud.

Lily: But you miss her… and your baby.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: And I want you to know that you can talk to me about any of that, as well. You know, I — I won’t make it about my own feelings of guilt. I just — I just want to be here for you, if you’ll let me.

Devon: I appreciate that. I do.

[ Door closes ]

Abby: Mariah? Mariah, hey, uh, I found someone to come in to work, so you’re off the hook. Mariah? Okay, uh, maybe — maybe she’s, uh, feeding him, uh, or rocking him. Mariah? Mariah? Not touching is still touching protection.

“The young and the restless”

will continue.

Sally: Was it wrong of me to want the forresters to include my designs in their couture collection out of sympathy, knowing I was at death’s door? Maybe. Yes. But it didn’t hurt anyone, right? I mean, especially since those designs were good.

Adam: If you do say so yourself.

Sally: Ridge and eric are businessmen first. They would not have included them otherwise. And if they actually made it down the runway, I believe they would have been huge sellers. It would have been a win-win for both of us.

Adam: I mean, when you think about it, you were doing them a favor.

Sally: You know what? When it comes to my career, i refuse to be humble. I am one hell of a good designer. I just have the unfortunate tendency of getting in my own way, which I am working on. And I have a feeling you can relate.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You’re not wrong.

Ashland: Harrison seems to be quite taken with gelato.

Nate: Chocolate and vanilla. Good man.

Ashland: You have kids?

Nate: Not yet, but, um, someday hopefully. I’ve learned that, uh, you can’t always make firm plans when it comes to your personal life.

Ashland: The way you said that — have you ever been married?

Nate: I was engaged once. Uh, she passed.

Ashland: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.

Nate: Thank you.

Ashland: It makes even more sense now, why you don’t react to me the way others do since my diagnosis. You don’t have that same squeamishness or distance that i sense in others. I assumed it was because you’re a doctor, but there’s more to it. You’ve gone through your own personal loss and grief. You don’t see it as foreign or frightening.

Elena: Ah. They seem to be getting along well.

Victoria: You know, nate stepped up for ashland in a big way after his first chemo session. He brought him home. He let him talk. He gave him some really good advice. He’s a good man.

Elena: Yeah. He is.

[ Chuckles ]

Jack: Let’s see. “I cannot help you, for I am only a cookie.”

Lauren: It does not say that!

Jack: Oh, no, it doesn’t say that. Let me see. We’ll play a little trombone here.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Jack: Uh, “your love life will soon be happy and harmonious.” Oh, we can only pray.

Lauren: Well, and you deserve that to come true.

Jack: I don’t know about that.

Lauren: Yes, you do.

Jack: I am thrilled, though, that summer and kyle have found their way back to each other.

Lauren: Yeah. What’s the update on their wedding?

Jack: Well, they are planning a small civil ceremony in italy, in contrast to what ashland locke and victoria are planning.

Lauren: Right, and quite a contrast from what kyle and summer were planning, as well, before all this craziness happened and they got derailed.

Jack: You know what? I’m glad they took things down a bit. I think they learned a lesson. They have everything they need to be happy right now, without all the extras.

Lauren: Mm. And what about you, my friend? Do you have everything you need to be happy?

Lily: So, how is abby dealing with chance being gone now that the baby’s here? I know having a family was their dream. It must be so hard for her to not have him here to share that with her.

Devon: Yeah, of course it is. She’s — she’s just staying strong and trying to keep the faith that he’s gonna come home to her soon.

Lily: And you took my advice, right?

Devon: About what? Not ragging on chance in front of her?

Lily: Yeah. I mean, I know that you were resenting him for not being here when she needed him.

Devon: Yeah, yeah, no, I — I told you I wasn’t gonna say that to her. It was just the last thing she needed to hear.

Lily: And now?

Devon: I mean, now I just kind of feel sorry for him ’cause there’s a lot of big moments that have happened that he’s never gonna get back. And I think when he’s home, it’s really gonna hit him hard.

Lily: Does he even know he has a son?

Devon: He’s gone deeper undercover, and we can’t get any messages to him. So I started to wonder if maybe it’s safer that he doesn’t know.

Lily: Well, look, I’m sure when he gets home, he’s gonna be very grateful to you for looking after abby and his son.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Oh. Hey, abby. What’s up?

Abby: Hey, have you heard from mariah?

Devon: Not recently. Why?

Abby: I had to go in to society for a bit, and mariah offered to watch dom, but I got home and they are gone. There’s no note or anything.

Devon: I assume you called her cellphone. Did it just go to voicemail or what?

Abby: Well, she left her phone at home. That’s weird, right? I mean, I’m trying not to freak out, but —

Devon: Yeah, no, don’t freak out. Don’t freak out at all. Um, just give me a minute, and I’ll be right over, okay?

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: So, abby got back home from work, and mariah and the baby aren’t where she expected them to be.

Lily: Well, no. Go, please. You need to be there.

Devon: Okay. Thank you. Will you lock up before you go?

Lily: Yeah, of course, of course.

Devon: Okay. See you later.

Lily: Yeah.

[ Door closes ] Now, we all know progressive offers 24/7 protection,

Jack: I thought you were gonna stop pestering me about my romantic life — or lack thereof.

Lauren: When did I agree to that?

[ Laughs ] Come on. I’m just checking in.

Jack: Yeah, sure.

Lauren: I know that you had a really amazing time having kyle and harrison here. The house must feel very quiet without them.

Jack: Oh, boy, does it. I got used to all the noise and commotion and excitement, looking forward to the holidays, having a funny, happy kid like harrison around for halloween. Boy, it doesn’t get better than that.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Well, maybe they can come for a visit.

Jack: Yeah. I mean, sure they can. I’m still gonna have to get used to all the quiet in this house. And all the extra time I have on my hands. You know, thank god I’ve got work. I can pour myself into jabot and the abbott-winters foundation.

Lauren: Right, but that’s for your mind. You need something to fill your heart. You need a passion, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be romantic.

Jack: You know what? I have come to the conclusion that I’ve had my share of grand passions. Now looking after harrison, being “grandpa” — that’s what fed my heart. Soothing his little worries, exciting his imagination, teaching him the things that my father taught me. I mean, I can do those things over the phone, some of them, but it’s just not the same thing.

Lauren: You know, I’ve never thought of being a grandparent in those terms. The way you talk about it, it sounds very appealing. Of course, my sons aren’t even close to settling down, so…

Jack: I’m telling you, the day is gonna come, and when it does, trust me — you are gonna love it.

Victoria: I have a lovely cabernet in the kitchen.

Elena: Sounds great. I’ll help you.

Ashland: Please.

Nate: So, uh, will victoria’s kids be going to italy for the wedding?

Ashland: Oh, you know, I’m hoping that they can make it. Tuscany is absolutely gorgeous in the fall, and I’d love for them to see it.

Nate: Yeah. I, um — I went there with my mother when I was young. Still remember it. We went all over — tuscany, umbria, le marche.

Ashland: Nice.

Nate: I also saw quite a bit of europe when I was in boarding school. But I haven’t been back since.

Ashland: Why don’t you and elena join us at the wedding? Victoria and I would love to have you there. Uh…I know it might be a little presumptuous, and you can clearly say no, but, uh… I-I-I’d — I’d like for you to be my best man.

Nate: Wow, uh, that’s, uh, quite generous of you. Are you sure? I mean, we’re still getting to know each other.

Ashland: No, you know, I’ve always been able to size up people pretty quickly. You are a brilliant and kind man who has a — a deeper understanding of what I’m going through than most and…

Nate: I’m sure you have friends in new york you could ask.

Ashland: Yeah, I’m sure, but, I mean, to be quite honest, they’re mostly people I’ve met through work. The connections were more professional than personal, you know? I’m just not in that world right now. And, quite frankly, most people are clearly having a difficult time with my medical situation. Anyway, just think about it. There’s no pressure. I-I-I-I would love to have you and elena join us for the ceremony. It’s gonna be a blast.

Nate: Joie de vivre.

[ Both laugh ]

Ashland: From beginning to end.

Mariah: Hi.

Abby: Oh, my god. Hi. Where have you been?

Mariah: Oh, uh, bowie — sorry — uh, dominic was crying his head off, and I had no idea what to do. So I called the pediatrician, and he said that going out for a walk might help. And look. It worked.

Abby: Okay, I-I just, um — you didn’t leave a note or — you didn’t bring your phone. I mean, I had no way of getting a hold of you.

Mariah: Oh. Sorry. Yeah. I — when the baby cries, my brain short-circuits. It must be the hormones. But, um, everything is fine. I’m sorry if you got worried.

Abby: It’s just, the last time you disappeared with the baby, I mean, you were gone for three weeks. I almost called the police.

Mariah: Oh. Again, I’m — I’m really, really sorry, but we were just out for a walk on the grounds. That’s all. No need for alarm.

Abby: Yeah. Hi, baby. Hi.

Adam: I like the simplicity of the lines. And yet there’s a — there’s a richness to it. You have a specific bride in mind, which is a good thing. Even though, uh, victoria might not be inclined to choose a design from a woman who works for the company that’s owned by her black-sheep brother.

Sally: So, that’s it, huh? Just enough commentary to prove that it was a working dinner in case anyone asks?

Adam: Is there something more that you want me to say?

Sally: I’m just mainly curious as to why you agreed to come out with me since we’ve established this was not a date, but also really wasn’t about work. We could have had this five-minute conversation in the office.

Adam: I mean, isn’t it obvious at this point? I’m here for the scintillating conversation.

Sally: Or maybe you were hoping that the news of this non-date would get back to someone in particular and make them jealous?

Adam: Oh! Maybe you were hoping that jack would hear about it.

Sally: [ Sighs ] You know, I actually haven’t thought about him once since we sat down.

Adam: Really?

Sally: I was too busy enjoying myself. And whether or not you want to admit it, I think you have been, too.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: Well, thank you for a wonderful evening.

Victoria: Well, we’re really glad that you could join us. It’s been a wonderful change of pace.

Ashland: Yes, it has. We’ll have to do this again soon. And you will get back to me at some point?

Nate: Definitely.

Victoria: Okay.

Ashland: You guys get home safely.

Nate: Alright.

Elena: Thanks.

Nate: You have a good evening.

Ashland: You do the same. Thank you.

[ Exhales heavily ]

Victoria: Are you okay?

Ashland: I’m fine. I may have to take it easy tomorrow, but it was worth it to have an evening like this.

Victoria: Well, I hope we have many more like it.

Ashland: I will do my best to give us that.

Abby: Sorry. It was a false alarm. Mariah just took the baby out to get some air, and she thought she’d be back before anyone noticed.

Mariah: Devon. Hi. I’m — I didn’t realize that abby called you. I’m sorry if this ruined your evening.

Devon: Oh, no, you didn’t ruin anything at all. But I’m gonna text lily and let her know everything’s okay.

Abby: And I am gonna bring this little guy to bed. Be right back. Come on, baby. Let’s go.

Mariah: I apologize. I-I just didn’t want to bother abby at work, and I figured i could handle it on my own. Then the baby started crying his head off. I had no idea what to do. I was worried that he might be sick or something, so I even called the pediatrician.

Devon: You did exactly what you were supposed to do. What did he say?

Mariah: Well, he said that a walk sometimes can lull a baby to sleep, so I tried it, and it did the trick.

Devon: Nice.

Mariah: But I just — I got so panicky and flustered, I-I forgot my phone, and I am kind of embarrassed. I crumbled under the pressure.

Devon: It doesn’t sound like that’s what you did. It sounds like you asked an expert for advice and then you did exactly what the baby needed and everything worked out fine. I’m actually happy that you were with dom and you followed your natural instincts.

Mariah: Man, this being a mom thing is not for wimps. It’s a lot harder than it looks.

Devon: Yeah.

Rey: Glad we’re getting off to a good start.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Well, I’m happy to have a do-over if, uh — what is this? That’s Connor’s.

Rey: Yeah. I’m returning it. [ Cap thuds ] I ran into him in the park earlier. I hadn’t seen him since we got back from Minnesota. Told me how much fun he’d had at lacrosse camp. Anyhow, when he took off with his nanny, I noticed he’d forgotten his cap.

Adam: Uh-huh. I remember when I bought this for Connor. He wouldn’t take it off for a week. He slept in it, took a bath in it. It’s his favorite. He would, uh, be crushed if he lost it.

Rey: Well, crisis averted.

Adam: Mm. I’m sure that he’ll want to thank you.

Rey: It’s not a problem.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Hey, and my dad told me about what happened to Mariah and how you helped track her down. Sounds like you deserve some major props.

Rey: Devon Hamilton’s the real hero. Make a pretty good detective. He had a feeling about Stitch, and he never let it go.

Adam: Well, I had no idea that things had gotten so far off course.

Rey: You say that as if you were expecting updates. Why would you think you’re part of the inner circle?

Adam: Because I care?

Rey: About Mariah or about Sharon?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, would you look at that. That is the longest conversation we’ve had without Sharon coming up. Sure was nice while it lasted, Rey, but your jealousy is constant.

*******************************

Mariah: You do realize your pledge to torture and destroy Stitch would get us both locked away forever?

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: But I love how protective you are.
