Adam: Hello, father.

Victor: Hey, son. What are you doing here? I thought you were staying in town.

Adam: Oh, I’m just picking up some of my things. I’d be happy to clear out all my stuff if you would prefer a different tenant. Victoria perhaps? I know you would prefer her company these days. And maybe you could, uh, persuade her and the kids to camp out here permanently, take over the place that you offered me. You know, I think that would only be fitting, dad, considering I’m just used as a placeholder for my sister until her inevitable triumphant return knocks me back into the reject pile.

Victor: For your information, katie and johnny are upstairs asleep, and victoria claims she wants to move back to her home.

[ Keys jangle ]

Ashland: Do you remember when you gave me this ring, huh? The loch family ring. You told me it was a symbol for who I am now. It was supposed to represent our bright, shiny future. What does it represent now, victoria?

Victoria: [ Breathes deeply ]

Ashland: Nothing. Nothing but your lies and your deception. I will never wear it again. But I’m gonna keep it because it will remind me of how cruel people can be.

Victoria: I’m cruel?

Ashland: I loved you! And you used that love against me! You played me for your own personal gain! I was willing to walk through fire for you!

Victoria: Ashland, please calm down.

Ashland: I risked my life pulling you from that burning car only to have you destroy it! I should have left you! I should have let you die.

Victoria: [ Gasps ]

Victoria: You’re sad and ugly and disgusting! No one could ever love you!

Ashland: Don’t say that! Ahh! No — you bitch. No, you are not gonna get to that phone.

Nick: Hey!

Ashland: No.

Nick: Stay right there!

Ashland: No.

Nick: What is going on?

Ashland: Don’t get involved, nick. Your sister and I are saying our final goodbyes.

Victoria: [ Breathes deeply ]

Adam: Victoria is following her usual patterns. She sucks up your hospitality, then she hurries home. Is there a reason you think she shouldn’t this time?

Victor: You obviously know the trauma she has been through, right? That drama with ashland locke has left wounds, traumatic for both her and the children. They don’t even know what their stepfather was capable of.

Adam: Yeah, just like, uh, many people don’t know how ashland locke actually died.

Victor: Why are you bringing that up now?

Adam: I just can’t get over the feeling that you had something to do with it.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] You trying to goad me into something or what?

Adam: No. Look, I’m not looking for a fight, okay? Just the opposite. I don’t want to be accused of slinking on and off the property without saying hello. And now I have, so I’ll be on my way.

Victor: Hey, son. Why don’t we sit down and have a drink together, huh?

Sharon: Wow. The whole family must be so relieved. I mean, now you can finally put this nightmare behind you, especially you and victoria.

Nick: [ Sighs ] And dad, too. Not that he would admit it. Thanks to chance, he is in the clear. But he almost made the situation much, much worse.

Sharon: Well, victor’s methods might not always be the best, but you know he was only trying to help.

Nick: That’s always his motivation, but it’s not always the result.

Sharon: Sounds like you’re still angry with him.

Nick: Part of me is livid with him because of his constant need to control every single situation. Meanwhile, I’m the one who’s up at night worried sick if anything’s gonna happen to him if chance makes his case.

Sharon: Well, have you and your dad gotten to talk about this and how his actions have affected everyone?

Nick: If anything, he blames me for making him tell me what he had done. I should have just left it alone. You know, it’s never his fault.

Sharon: Mm, I wouldn’t let him off the hook now.

Nick: You’re right. I just — I need to let go of some of this aggravation and take a deep breath because it seems like this is gonna be behind us.

Sharon: You have been under a tremendous pressure. I’m glad you’re feeling some relief, but I’m afraid there is another aspect to this you won’t be able to avoid — your own conflict with having killed a man, even someone as horrible as ashland.

Abby: Good night. I know that something has been eating away at you. Was it the conversation that you had with victoria earlier? Did she upset you? And was she pressuring you about the investigation?

Chance: No, no, not at all. She, uh — she was actually surprisingly candid, said she didn’t want to influence my decision in any way.

Abby: Well, that’s a relief.

Chance: Yeah.

Abby: I know that you’ve been churning on the inside.

Chance: After she left, kevin showed up with some new information.

Abby: Evidence?

Chance: Mm-hmm. I can’t go into detail, but it was clear to me I had to make a call on what to do next.

Abby: And?

Chance: Well, I just came from the ranch. Saw your family. Investigation’s over. Wrote my final report. Ashland locke died of head trauma most likely suffered during a car accident. File it tomorrow, and then i will move on.

Abby: [ Exhales heavily ] Okay. Um… that’s amazing. I mean, that means my dad was innocent. There was no cover-up.

[ Chuckling ] Oh, my god.

Chance: No, abby. There was evidence of exactly that. (Assad) since my mother

Abby: I don’t know what to say. I was hoping that, for once, my father hadn’t gone rogue.

Chance: Well, here’s the deal. Even though I did have evidence that backed up victor was behind the cover-up, it wasn’t conclusive. There were gaps. I was missing pieces. I mean, there was just enough for a prosecutor to think twice before taking it to trial.

Abby: So, that was your reasoning. You couldn’t prove your theory.

Chance: If I would have kept digging and pursuing the evidence I have, I believe i could have got there. Yes, what we had so far, a criminal case could have gone either way. But, hey, at the end of the day, no matter what happened, ashland’s death was an accident. So I made a judgment call. I opted to embrace the car crash as the most plausible cause of death.

Abby: Well, I know this case has been weighing on you heavily. So, why aren’t you more relieved that it’s over?

Sharon: Right after ashland died, you came to me and you wanted to talk. You explained how you were upset over having taken a life, any life, even though you knew you had acted in self-defense. And then you got caught up in what victor did, and then you were concerned about what the police were gonna discover. And I’m thinking that you used that as a way of avoiding confronting your own feelings.

Nick: I mean, in some ways, all that chaos kind of pulled me out of my own head. You know, it was a distraction. Not exactly a welcome one, but it gave me a place to focus on something besides my own guilt.

Sharon: And are you ready to face those feelings now? I don’t mean right this second. There’s no time limit. I’m just saying I want you to know that I’m here when you’re ready. Maybe you can explore what’s going on inside without the constant sense of dread of everything that’s been hanging over you lately. And I’m happy to listen. And if you want, I’ll help guide you through this.

Adam: Connor’s taken a little detour from sports lately.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Into what?

Adam: Coding. He’s, uh, fascinated by it.

Victor: Coding? What the hell is coding? Whoa. Huh. I’ll be damned. You know, we miss that boy. Both nikki and I do. Whenever he’s here, he brings a smile to our faces. I’m sure that kid will be very, very successful.

Adam: Unlike his dad. Serial failure.

Victor: I didn’t say anything like that.

Adam: No, but it was implied.

[ Clears throat ] You rarely say what you actually mean.

Victor: What do you mean, what’s implied? That’s pure nonsense you’re talking about. You trying to goad me into something or what? You trying to piss me off? Not gonna work tonight. I’m feeling good.

Victoria: Ashland?

Nick: Can you find a pulse? Vick.

[ Knock on door ]

Victoria: [ Gasps ]

Billy: Vick, it’s me. You in there?

Victoria: [ Exhales heavily ] The door’s open.

[ Door opens ]

Billy: Hi.

Victoria: Hi.

Billy: I know it’s a little bit late, and I don’t want to intrude, but I was driving by. I saw your car in the driveway and your lights on. I thought you said earlier that you were gonna stay at the ranch.

Victoria: Oh, yeah, well, at that point, I hadn’t planned on — on returning tonight, but when I got to the ranch, i just — I felt like I wanted to come back home.

Billy: Is this your first night back since —

Victoria: Since ashland died? Yes. Yes, it is. You know, it’s funny. Walking in here, it struck me how — how nothing has really changed [Breathes deeply] And yet everything has.

[ Sighs heavily ] I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Billy: You feel better?

Victoria: Much. Thank you.

Billy: So, why did you decide to come back?

Victoria: I don’t want to uproot myself or the kids.

Billy: I understand that, but why tonight? Because, you know, you don’t have to rush any of this. You could have waited until the investigation was resolved.

Victor: It was resolved. It’s over and done with. Case closed.

Billy: What do you — what do you mean? You didn’t mention that earlier.

Victoria: I didn’t know about it then.

Billy: Come on. You want to share some of this with me, or did you swear secrecy?

Victoria: Okay. I…

[ Sighs ] After I left the bar and returned to the ranch, chance was there and informed us as a group that his official findings were that, after the fight, ashland left the house, got into his car, drove off, and died in a crash.

Billy: “Official finding.” Meaning?

Victoria: I-I — chance is gonna submit his final report to the department. That’s just the language that they use, billy.

Billy: Yeah, well, it sounds like a euphemism to me.

Victoria: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Billy: Look, I got to ask you. Be straight with me. There’s more to ashland locke’s death than the rest of us know, isn’t there?

Chance: I am relieved that i made my decision on this case. Trust me. But it was not easy. I mean, I think your dad orchestrated a cover-up. I believe that. And my evidence wasn’t conclusive. So I just had to ask myself, what am I gonna accomplish from doing all this? I’m just gonna continue to expend department resources when there is so much more out there crying for my attention right now.

Abby: Like closing all of rey’s cases. I know that’s important to you.

Chance: For starters, yes. And then there’s the human element to consider.

Abby: My family. Yeah.

Chance: I mean, after everything that ashland did to victoria and your whole family, is it right for me to just drag them through some more hell? I know for a fact there wasn’t any malice or premeditation leading up to his death. And whatever happened, the injury that killed him was an accident. But I believe that ashland died as a result of that altercation.

Abby: So you’ve said.

Chance: And victor reacted in the moment. It was ill-advised, and it complicated the hell out of things, but it happened. It can’t be undone. The people who know about it are gonna have to live with it. Nick’s gonna have to come to terms with killing ashland, and victoria’s gonna need time to heal. Although I bet your dad is celebrating. That’s for sure.

Abby: Look, my father will always do what he believes is right to protect his family. And I will never be able to thank you enough for choosing to protect him.

Chance: Look —

Abby: To protect our family.

Chance: Look, I made a choice, alright? And I would — I would really appreciate it if you would stop acting like it was the right one just because I came down on the newmans’ side of things.

Adam: Well, you seem very pleased with yourself. Why is that? What major win have you scored now?

Victor: My family is happy, and when they’re happy, I feel good.

Adam: Mm. I see.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: You’re gonna make me pull it out of you bit by bit. Okay.

[ Glass thuds ] Well, the latest threat to the newmans was ashland locke.

Victor: Well, that S.O.B. Is thankfully no longer with us.

Adam: Mm, that eliminated some of the danger, but his death had its own turmoil. So, what changed?

Victor: All conversations about ashland locke are past tense, okay? Guy’s dead as a doornail. And any investigations into the circumstances of his death are now closed.

Adam: What?

Victor: Yeah. They’re closed. Chance was here earlier. He said he was no longer going to investigate the circumstances of ashland locke’s death, so victoria can now pick up the pieces of her life. So can we all.

Adam: That’s your win.

[ Laughs ] There really was something to investigate after all, wasn’t there? And naturally, you shut it down. What the hell did you pull this time, dad? (Vo) red lobster’s seafood summerfest is fire!

Victor: Okay, I’m — I’m gonna entrust you with the real facts, with the expectation that you keep it private.

Billy: I promise you, whatever you tell me, it’ll stay between us.

Victoria: Although nicholas and I didn’t know it at the time…ashland did die here.

[ Sighs ] We went outside to get our bearings, and my father sent his security team in here to remove the body and stage an accident.

Billy: In order to protect nick from being blamed.

Victoria: Dad didn’t know it at the time. He didn’t — he — he didn’t know about the fight. All he knew is that ashland was lying on my floor, dead. He wasn’t even sure who he was protecting.

Billy: Just covering his bases, huh?

Victoria: Nicholas was furious, and he felt like dad had made things so much worse. And then of course chance suspected dad of covering things up, and he started looking for evidence and pursuing new leads. He was completely relentless. And then tonight, he told us that he concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence to, um — to prove that a crime had been committed, and he closed the case.

Billy: Just like that?

Victoria: Just like that.

Billy: Well, I’m glad he let it go.

Victoria: Although I got the impression that it wasn’t easy for him.

Billy: I’m sure it wasn’T. Just like I’m sure this isn’t easy for you. I mean, obviously, this is upsetting being back here, realizing that your ex didn’t actually die in a car crash, that it —

Victoria: Happened here. You know, part of me is glad that I was in the kitchen and I didn’t see nick punch him, I didn’t see him fall. That memory is the last thing that I need etched into my brain.

Billy: Oh, for your sake, I’m glad that’s true, too.

Victoria: I’m just so worried about nicholas.

[ Sighs ] He has to live with the knowledge that he — he took a man’s life. Even though his actions were justified, he never meant to hurt anyone. I’m so worried about what that will do to him.

Nick: I have no problem being open about my feelings toward ashland. I absolutely hated him. I don’t care who knew. I didn’t try and hide it. There were days when I wished he was dead. But then to actually see him dead on the floor, knowing that I caused it… I don’t know what to do with that. Some nights I wake up in a cold sweat, reliving that whole night.

[ Sighs ] I don’t know. I just — I wonder… how things would have played out if it happened differently.

Sharon: Hey. It was never your intention to take his life. Even if you had thought about it in the past, on any level, you need to separate your feelings for ashland from the events of that night. You were defending your sister. And, you know, you were protecting yourself, as well. And chance — I mean, we both know that he’s as righteous and honorable as they come. And he’s weighed all the evidence, and he’s declared that it was an accident. The fact that he has let this go just proves he believes that you are innocent. You’re not at fault.

Abby: I’m really sorry if i said the wrong thing. I didn’t mean to make you more upset.

Chance: One of the main reasons I was drawn to the military and then law enforcement — there are rules. There is the right, and there is the wrong, legal and illegal. You break the rules, you get punished.

Abby: I owe you an apology. I have been telling you that this was your decision to make and meanwhile I was forcing this “family first” idea onto you and that was not fair. But, really, I — I just want to be here for you, for whatever you’re feeling, even if that’s how disillusioned you are with my father, with my family… with me.

Chance: Honey, I’M…

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry. I really appreciated all your support. And I know I put you in a bad spot being on this case. I believe I came to the right determination, given the facts. I honestly do. And I just hope that nick and victoria can begin to move on.

Victor: So, why do you think I pulled anything?

Adam: Come on. Are — are we really gonna do this, dad? Fine.

[ Glass slams ] I’ve heard certain things. I’ve talked to a lot of people…

Victor: Mm.

Adam: …Including chance.

Victor: Mm.

Adam: News reports said it was a car crash, but it wasn’t that simple, was it, dad?

Victor: I don’t know.

Adam: The accident happened in a ravine nowhere near ashland’s place, but it wasn’t that far from victoria’S. Now, if it was just a routine car crash, why were the authorities looking into it?

Victor: Yeah. Why, indeed? Beats me.

Adam: Chance seemed pretty disturbed by what happened. And when I was leaving town, he told me that I should stay because my family might need me.

Victor: Well, how kind of him.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Where were you intending to go?

Adam: Oh, that doesn’t matter. But after that, I saw nick and sharon, and it looked pretty intense, like she was talking him off the ledge. Now, god knows nick and ashland didn’t care for each other. So, why would nick be so upset?

Victor: [ Chuckles ] No clue.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Now, for someone who claims he wants to leave the family, you’re awfully interested in our business.

Adam: Yeah. Yeah, and later on, I talked to abby, who seemed to think that chance was keeping things from her, too. Now, why all the secrecy for just a routine crash? I mean… and I also thought sally knew more than she was saying, but she was asked not to publish anything negative, which, dad, i have to tell you, quite frankly, that was crossing a line.

Victor: Now stop beating around the bush. Ask your question.

Adam: Did you cover for nick or victoria? How did locke really die? And how did you convince chance to just look the other way? Time. It’s life’s most precious commodity,

Victor: Son, you can attack me all day long, alright? But leave chance alone. He’s an honest man.

Adam: Fine. So, what happened?

Victor: Ashland locke threatened to become violent with victoria. Nicholas intervened, protected her. I then protected both of them. Chance decided to no longer continue the investigation into ashland locke’s death. He laid it to rest. That’s what family does, son, in moments of crisis. You, however, decided to leave us all, leave newman media, and put in charge your former girlfriend, who none of us trust.

[ Glass thuds ]

Adam: You claim to believe in family loyalty, except when it is inconvenient or it goes against your master plan, dad. I have been loyal as hell. You just don’t see it.

Billy: Nick is a strong, steady guy. He’s got a support system. I believe that he’s gonna be strong enough to overcome what’s happened to you.

Victoria: I don’t disagree with you. But I just want to be there for him. I want to be his sounding board while he’s going through this.

Billy: I understand that. I mean, looking at it, it’s kind of a minor miracle. You guys were pretty far apart in tuscany. You came back together strong, supporting each other.

Victoria: Well, it’s always been about ashland. He was right about him the whole time.

Billy: Yeah, let’s forget about that, okay? Let’s start to put ashland in the past, make him history.

Victoria: Alright. You know, when chance told me that he’d be closing the case, i just felt this giant weight lifting. That’s why I wanted to come home, you know? I just — I didn’t want to waste one minute getting back to life. But then when I got here, it just — all these memories came flooding back, and I’m really grateful you showed up when you did.

Billy: Wow. My timing didn’t suck for once.

Victoria: No. Actually, it was perfect.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] You know, when I first got here, you mentioned that this house looks the same, that our home now looks the same as it did the day we moved in. Sorry. Your home.

Victoria: Don’t apologize. It was our house.

Billy: Exact replica of the “father knows best,” what you always wanted.

Victoria: Look at how that metaphor turned out.

Billy: Mm-hmm. My father immediately had me arrested after we said our wedding vows on the front lawn, and he hasn’t stopped guiding me ever since.

[ Laughs ]

Billy: It’s nice to see you laugh.

Victoria: Well, you remember how I told you at the bar earlier that your dark sense of humor still cracks me up for some reason.

Billy: Oh. Yeah, well, what else am i good for? Look, I don’t want to, uh, make this all light because the truth is you did build something with ashland, and now all of that is gone. I’m not gonna shed a tear for that man. But I also just want to make sure that you’re alright and that you are ready to move on because I don’t want you causing any more pain for yourself. There’s already enough of that out in the world.

Victoria: I appreciate that. But I refuse to let ashland take my home from me.

Billy: Good. Now, how about we get rid of all that bad juju and talk about some good times?

Victoria: Alright. Where do you want to start?

Billy: Well, naturally, we start with the kids, right? So, um, I’m gonna say, uh, water balloon fights with them. That’s a blast.

Victoria: Snowball fights in the winter.

Billy: Yes.

Victoria: Yes.

Billy: Yes. The smell of hot chocolate and burnt cookies.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Well, I guess I can’t be good at everything.

Billy: [ Chuckling ] That’s true. But you do make a mean take-out order.

Victoria: Thank you. Painting together. Decorating for christmas.

Billy: Mm-hmm. Don’t forget my mean carpentry skills, where I built you the bookshelf, the exact replica of what you had when you were a child.

Victoria: I guess you’re not good at everything, either.

Billy: Hey, now. Come on. That wasn’t half bad.

Victoria: Those percentages sound about right, don’t they?

Billy: Geez.

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

Billy: What about bringing johnny home?

Victoria: Celebrating katie’s christening.

Billy: Yeah. I guess it’s only fair that, uh, we keep it real, right, and we talk about some of the tough times we went through.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Billy: One thing that comes to mind is how difficult it was for you when you were trying to have another baby.

Victoria: Delia’s death. I hope it doesn’t sound terrible for me to say it, but thinking about these memories that are a little bit darker, they — they bring me comfort, too.

Billy: Why is that?

Victoria: Well, because we made it through. We survived it. And here we are. We’re sitting together, talking, after all these years. We’re almost friends, even.

[ Both laugh ] I think that if I can get through those difficult times, still feel like this is my home, I could probably get through just about anything, including ashland.

Billy: I have no doubt.

Victoria: You know, when i first came back in here and i saw where it happened, where he died… but now, is it insane that you’ve made me feel like i should be toasting the future?

Billy: It’s not insane at all. At marshalls, our buyers spend every day hustling

Victoria: What should we drink to?

Billy: That’s a dangerous question.

Victoria: I’m not going to drink to ashland’s death.

Billy: No, no, no. That is far too morbid.

Victoria: Among other things, yes.

Billy: How about to catharsis?

Victoria: Perfect.

[ Glasses clink ]

Billy: You know, I have to say…you really are at the place that you always dreamed about being at. And I know it’s been difficult to get here, but you’re running the newman family business. It’s bigger and stronger than it’s ever been. And most importantly, you are the best mother to the most amazing kids that this planet has ever seen.

Victoria: I do have a lot to be grateful for.

Billy: Yeah. And now we are moving on from what’s-his-name and all his horror, everything that he put you through, there is nothing — and I mean this — nothing that you can’t conquer.

Victoria: Thank you.

Billy: I mean it, vick. You’re so impressive. You’re an amazing woman. And I’m — I’m just so proud of you.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: And to be honest, I’m a tiny bit jealous.

[ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You mentioned earlier at the club that, uh — that you felt a bit at sea lately.

Billy: Yeah.

Victoria: What is that about?

Billy: Just thinking about making some changes.

Victoria: Care to share?

Billy: Nope, not tonight. Because tonight is all about you and your fresh start. To new beginnings.

[ Glasses clink ]

Victoria: Hear, hear.

Adam: I’m not gonna sit here and — and let you shame me for not being a loyal newman. I’ve done nothing but work to defend my sister and protect this family. I’m the one who brokered the deal to get ashland out of our lives, and it was you and victoria who undermined that. If she hadn’t gone to such extremes by taking his money and humiliating him, if you hadn’t taken steps to prevent him to see harrison… you backed the guy into a corner. You pushed him to lash out. And, I mean, I’m the one who went and I warned victoria and nick that he was out for revenge. So, whatever happened that night, however nick defended our sister — none of that would have happened, dad, if you trusted my original plan. Ashland locke would have disappeared on his own accord. He would have taken the money, and he would have been out of our lives. And you know what? Maybe he still would be alive.

Victor: And how in the hell would that have been a better outcome?

Adam: [ Scoffs ] I’m — I’m happy for you. I’m glad that you’re out from under that monster’s influence.

Victor: Mm.

Adam: But do remember — and, dad, you should know this better than anybody — there’s always another shoe out there that’s waiting to drop.

Diane: Why do you suppose harrison sleeps like that?

Jack: All splayed out like he’s in the middle of a jumping jack? I don’t know, maybe to keep cool in the august heat?

Diane: That could be it. Whatever the reason, it’s adorable. It’s like he jumped into bed in that position and then just fell immediately asleep.

[ Sighing ] Ah. Thank you for letting me peek in on him.

Jack: Anytime.

Diane: You know, this grandparenting thing is never going to get old, is it?

Jack: I highly doubt it. All this joy he brings us seems pretty limitless.

Diane: Yeah. Well, I — I should get going. Thank you for dinner.

Jack: What, you thanking me? You paid.

Diane: Well, I have a paycheck now, and, um, I couldn’t think of a nicer way to spend a bit of it.

Jack: Well, thank you. I was about to make myself a drink. Would you maybe like one?

Diane: A nightcap?

[ Chuckles ] That sounds like a lovely end to a lovely evening.

[ Liquid pouring ]

Billy: You actually think that victoria and I brought out the best in each other? You’re actually serious about that?

Chelsea: Absolutely. You brought out the best, and occasionally the worst.

Billy: Hmm. See, that’s more like it. No, I, uh — I don’t think that I brought out the best in victoria, but there’s no doubt that she often saved me from the worst of myself.

Chelsea: So you are lucky to have found her.

Billy: Oh, yeah, there’s no doubt about that. And I knew that. I know that. Everyone knows that.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] I think people from the outside looking in thought they knew what was going on in your relationship. I mean, even I knew about some of the roller-coaster ups and downs, but no one really knows what happened except the two of you, right?

Billy: Yeah, I would say that.

Chelsea: So, tell me, what really went wrong between you and victoria?

Victoria: Hello.

[ Sighs ] Well, chance is definitely conflicted. I can tell he’s being pulled in a couple of different directions.

Victor: Hope you made a very strong argument for him to drop this ridiculous investigation.

Victoria: I didn’t argue with him at all. I just told him that I respected that he has to do what he feels he has to do. But I made it very clear that my children and my family are a lot safer because of what happened that night.

Nikki: And how did he respond to that?

Victoria: He didn’t really reveal anything, but he looks like he’s carrying around a very heavy burden.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Whatever happens, we’ll deal with it, right?

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Nick: It all happened so fast. You know, all I wanted to do was protect my sister. But I’m telling you, ashland was completely out of control.

Victoria: You know, you’re accusing our father with no proof at all. As nicholas just said, this is all speculation.

Victor: So, let’s assume your cockamamie hypothesis is correct. Let’s assume that I sent my security team into the house, to pick up ashland locke’s body, put it into his car, and have them stage an accident in the ravine, give you the impression that ashland locke died by himself. And let’s assume that I did that to protect my son and my daughter from the impression that they weren’t innocent in this.

Nick: So, what would it take for you to be satisfied that ashland was able to leave victoria’s house without any help?

Chance: You know, honestly, nothing would make me feel better than to just close the book on this thing and move on.

Victoria: Well, if you really feel that way, then why don’t you put a stop to this investigation right now?

Chance: [ Sighs ] Kevin. Hey. Yeah, I know it’s late, man. I’m sorry. But the ashland locke case — I’ve made up my mind. That’s right, I finally know what I have to do.

Victor: I have no regrets of my actions that night. Okay? You all know that I did everything to protect my family.

Victoria: I thought you’d be more concerned.

Victor: Really? Chance doesn’t have enough evidence. If he had, he would have gone to the D.A. By now. So a few more dead ends, and he will give up.

Victoria: I’d feel more confident if that were the only issue I were dealing with right now.

Victor: What’s the matter? Anything wrong with the business?

Victoria: No, no, not at all. The business side of things seems to be humming along.

[ Sighs ] It’s something else.

Nikki: What is it, darling?

Victoria: I was ambushed tonight by chelsea.

Nikki: What reason would she have to come after you?

Victoria: She’s not really out to get me? She just suddenly seems very interested in telling johnny who his biological mother is.

Nikki: What?

Victoria: She says she wants connor to know that he has a brother — at least, biologically.

Victor: This is coming out of the blue.

Victoria: Uh, yes. I mean, it felt like it was. But who knows? Maybe this is something that chelsea has been considering for some time.

Nikki: What are you going to do about it?

Victoria: I have no idea. Johnny is aware that I’m not his biological mother, but it’s another thing altogether to tell him who gave birth to him.

Nikki: This was never part of the arrangement you made with her.

Victoria: Exactly. The decision to give johnny this information was left to our discretion completely.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] On the other hand, she’s not the same woman she was when you made that arrangement. She’s not a con artist anymore. She’s a mother herself now.

Victoria: That’s all true.

Nikki: And I do think keeping information like that from a child can cause problems later on.

Victoria: So, you’re saying you think I should break the news to johnny now?

No. You’re his mother. He’s your son. You’re the only mother he’s ever known.

Billy: What is going on here? Is this a therapy session I didn’t know I was having.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] I’m sorry if I’m overstepping. I don’t know what our boundaries are yet. I figure, since we’re working together, everything’s fair game.

Billy: Is that so?

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. It would be great fodder for an episode.

Billy: Okay. Look, uh, I’m not upset that you’re asking me about victoria. I’m really not. I was just a little bit surprised. But I think you’re right. The more open and honest we are, the more authentic the podcast is.

Chelsea: Exactly. Like we said, the audience will know if we’re being fake. So back to my original question. What happened between you and victoria?

Billy: [ Sighs ] There’s really not one answer to explain why we didn’t work out, except for maybe the fact that I’ve never been able to hold on to a winning streak. Truth is, it was never her fault. You know? I mean, she did everything she could to keep me on the path. And, uh, I don’t know, for whatever reason, I would always find a way to slip up. But it was never her fault. And that’s not me being self-effacing or trying to protect her in any way. It’s just the truth. She was never the cause of me being at my worst.

Chelsea: Oh, that’s not what I meant when I said that. I just meant, you know, you guys brought up the extremes in each other.

Billy: Yeah.

Chelsea: But I don’t think you’re like that anymore. You know, you’re a lot more in control, a lot more mature. You’ve — you’ve calmed that wild side.

Billy: You’ve got a talent for coming up with new ways to call me boring.

Chelsea: Tat’s not my intention. It’s not. What, is that how you see yourself? Does part of you miss the billy you used to be?

Nick: It’s a little late for coffee, huh?

Chance: Oh, I’m not sleeping much these days as it is.

Nick: Sorry to hear that.

Chance: May be able to relax soon. There’s been some developments in the case.

Nick: That’s good for you, I guess.

Chance: Yeah. I’d like to sit down with you and victoria and your dad in the morning. We can talk about how things are gonna proceed from here.

Nick: Well, chance, I don’t see any reason why we need to prolong. Vick’s out at the ranch with dad right now. Let’s go out there and handle this tonight.

Chance: You’d be up for that?

Nick: The sooner, the better, as far as I’m concerned.

Chance: Okay. Let’s go to the ranch. A pool floatie is like whooping cough,

Diane: Come to think of it, kyle used to sleep like that. Remember? Thank you.

Jack: No, I don’T.

Diane: Guess I noticed it when he would have a bad dream and then come into my room in the middle of the night. He would crawl into bed with me and then spread out, just like harrison, and this — this little three-year-old taking up the whole bed. I would just go sleep on the sofa.

Jack: No, I-I don’t recall that.

Diane: Oh, I think that was when I left genoa city with him. I look back on that time with such regret. No wonder he was having bad dreams. I was keeping him from you. It wasn’t fair, jack. And I’m — I’m sorry.

Jack: Water under the bridge.

Diane: And now it seems like history is kind of repeating itself.

Jack: Wait. How so?

Diane: Well, kyle missed out on the first few years of harrison’s life.

Jack: That was a very different situation. I — I didn’t mean that to sound like I was taking a shot at you, but we both have spent enough time and energy on past resentments.

Diane: Yes. The last time we talked about the wounds from our past, you were a bit more antagonistic with me. Rightfully so. But, um, I kind of appreciate the kinder, gentler approach you’re taking with me tonight.

Jack: I still don’t think we should sweep everything from the past under the rug.

Diane: No, and I — I don’t want to gloss over what happened. There are so many people in this town who won’t let me forget any of it. But you seem to have found a way to rise above that pettiness.

Jack: You’ve made a lot of claims about doing the same thing. Do you really think you can let go of past resentments?

Diane: Uh, well, for years, I — I held on to grudges. They fueled me. Jack, I can’t believe how much my life has changed in a year. I mean, I still have regrets. And kyle’s pain tops the list. But here I am, having a life that I could have only dreamed of. I’m rebuilding my relationship with my son, I’m getting to know my grandson. And I have an exciting, new job that allows me to buy you dinner once in a while.

Jack: [ Chuckles ]

Diane: It’s unreal. Almost as unreal as the two of us sitting here together.

Jack: It’s all pretty amazing.

Diane: Yeah.

Jack: But what do you really want?

Billy: You’re killing me with these questions. You know that?

Chelsea: I’m just trying to get you to open up, give us some material for the podcast.

Billy: Right. Okay. Well, to answer your question, no, I don’t think I’m boring.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] But do you miss who you used to be?

Billy: I’m uh — I mean, I think everybody looks back on their past at a certain age and feels a little nostalgia for their youth. I will also say that that troublemaking side of me is embedded pretty deep in there. At least, that’s what my family believes anyway.

Chelsea: Who thinks that?

Billy: Oh, everybody thinks that. I mean, my mom, my brother, they don’t believe that I’ll ever be able to grow up. I will always self-sabotage myself. And when my mom said that just a few weeks ago, we were talking about the podcast. She believes that’s a gateway to the old destructive behavior.

Chelsea: Oh, she’s just being overprotective. Just pushing your buttons as only a mom can.

Billy: Yeah, maybe so.

Chelsea: Your mom’s not here. She doesn’t get to see you on a daily basis, so she doesn’t recognize how much you’ve changed. Now, lily — lily is the person whose opinion matters most.

Billy: Yeah, I don’t think — lily’s opinion of me isn’t much better. We had a little, uh, discussion, and it sounds like she wants me to quit the podcasts.

Victor: If you want my opinion, I think it would be a mistake to tell johnny about chelsea. It would only confuse the boy.

Nikki: Darling, you, of all people, should understand the importance of knowing where you came from, who your parents are.

Victor: Sweetheart, there’s a time for that. This is not it.

Victoria: Also, johnny is dealing with the loss of ashland. I don’t think it would be smart to pile all this on top of him right now. I know ashland wasn’t his stepfather for very long, but the children still feel the loss.

Nikki: I agree with you about the timing, but I do think it would be best to tell him at some point.

Nick: You’re all still here. Good.

Victoria: Is everything okay?

Nikki: What’s going on?

Victor: Why are you so late?

Nick: Chance is gonna be here any minute.

[ Telephone rings ]

Victor: Yes? Send him in.

Nikki: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Apparently, chance has uncovered some new information and he’s ready to move forward.

Victoria: What does that mean?

Nick: I don’t know, but i didn’t like the sound of it, so I convinced him to come out here and talk to us.

Victor: This going to be a courtesy call, or is he bringing handcuffs?

Nick: I don’t know, dad.

Victor: What was his demeanor?

Nick: Somber. He seemed weighted down, but he didn’t hesitate when I invited him to come out here and speak to us. Maybe that’s a good sign.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Chance: Hello, everyone.

Victor: Hello, chance.

Chance: Thank you for meeting with me. I think this will be helpful.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Helpful to you or to us?

Chance: For the process, victor. Now, I really just need to speak with the people directly involved.

Nikki: Oh. Does that mean I’m supposed to leave the room?

Victor: No, you’re not supposed to leave the room. You can say whatever you want to say in front of nikki, okay?

Chance: Okay. That’s fine.

Victoria: It’s late. Can we begin this conversation?

Chance: Sure. But nick may have misled you about why I’m here. This is not a conversation. I just need all of you to please listen to what I have to say.

Zyrteeeec…

Chance: Here’s what I have so far. A witness spotted ashland’s vehicle at a gas station near victoria’s property. There was security footage of someone driving that vehicle away from that gas station right after you called me that night. Now, the image is not clear, but we have determined that it is not ashland.

Nikki: So, he had an accomplice or he hired a driver.

Chance: Let me finish, please. Thank you. Now, while it does not look like ashland, he does bear a resemblance to one of victor’s security guards — one of the men assigned to victoria’s house that night.

Victor: He could resemble a million people.

Chance: He might. But he smokes. A cigarette butt was found where ashland’s car was parked at the gas station — his brand. Now, the security footage from the gas station has gaps, including where ashland would have got there and when he would have left. We also have ashland’s ring, which was found on the floor at victoria’s house, and it is very unlikely that that ring fell out of his pocket when he was walking out of the house, but more probable that it fell out of his pocket when he was being carried or dragged out of the house.

Victor: It’s all suppositions — cigarette butt, apiece of jewelry. Come on.

Chance: There’s more. The latest piece of evidence is a bloody fingerprint found on the door handle of the car. And the blood is ashland’S. The print is not. So, no, this is no longer a supposition. And once I compare that print to your security guards, I’m pretty sure I’ll have a match.

Victor: It won’t stand up in court.

Chance: Indictments have been made with less.

Victor: I tell you, you’ve got nothing. Right?

Chelsea: I can’t believe lily wants you to walk away from the podcast.

Billy: Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. She didn’t outright say that. I’m just saying, it seems like she would be happy if I either walked away from being the coo or the podcast, but she doesn’t think I should be able to do both.

Chelsea: That’s not true.

Billy: Well, she feels like I’m spending too much time focusing on the podcast, and i know what other people aren’t saying — that I’m using it as a way to avoid my responsibility at chancellor-winters.

Chelsea: Well, I disagree. The podcasts are a perfect fit for you. No offense, but I said it before. You’re not a corporate guy.

Billy: None taken.

Chelsea: You’re a sensible risk-taker like me. You know, you take chances on love and life and the world.

Billy: I hear you. But I will say, lily’s got a pretty sharp insight, and I trust her. She has not steered me wrong yet, so maybe she’s right. Maybe I should leave my position as coo.

Chelsea: Well, that’s the most sensible thing you’ve said all day. It’s like you always go back to the c-suite because you think it’s what you’re supposed to do, but you always end up leaving for your real passion. Podcast billy is the real billy. The grinning soul is the real billy.

Billy: No, that’s — that’s not me.

Chelsea: Stop denying it. I figured it out a long time ago. I know you better than you realize.

Diane: What do I want? What does anyone want? Um, health and happiness… peace. Beyond that, to be a productive member of society and — and to be a welcome part of my son and my grandson’s lives.

Jack: Wow. This is a letter-perfect answer. Sounds like you’re competing in a pageant.

Diane: [ Laughs ] Well, do you have a tiara and a sash for me? Is that why you’re asking me these questions?

Jack: I don’t know. I was maybe hoping for some honesty that maybe you could dig deep and tell me what’s really going on, since obviously we’re in a different place than we were a few months ago, even a few weeks ago.

Diane: We are. There’s no longer a wall of animosity between us.

Jack: And that’s a good thing, right?

Diane: Yes, it is.

Jack: [ Chuckles ]

Diane: Where exactly are you going with these questions, jack?

I want to know what you’re thinking. Where do you think this is going?

Victor: Well, I think we’ll sort this all out.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

I can’t go on like this. Alright, we are living —

Chance: Nick, I advise you to say nothing more without a lawyer present.

Victor: Chance, let me ask you something. What are you doing here? You’re a member of this family. You’re my son-in-law. You understand the complexity of this case as it pertains to all of us. So…have you forgotten that you’re a member of this family?

Chance: Like I said, this is not a conversation. So I would appreciate it if all of you would just listen. Ughh!

“The young and the restless”

[Sfx: Buzzing ] This is pretection

Chance: So, there are two scenarios here. Both involve a belligerent and unstable ashland locke showing up at victoria’S. He’s invited in. He makes threats. Nick arrives, coming to his sister’s aid. In self-defense, nick punches locke, and he falls and hits his head. Now, scenario number one. He’s injured, but he’s still alive. These two step outside for a brief moment. During that time, ashland gets up, he stumbles to his car, and he drives off. And at some point, he loses control of the vehicle and he ends up in that ravine, killing himself in the crash.

Victor: Mm-hmm. Go on.

Chance: Now, scenario number two. Nick’s altercation with locke, in defense of victoria, inadvertently caused the fall that killed locke. Now, nick did not intend for him to die, but it happened. And after victoria did the responsible thing and contacted me, the two stepped outside. Then, without their knowledge, victor’s men removed the body. They placed it in the rental car. They staged the accident to make it look like that was how he died. And all of that would absolve nick of responsibility for the death. Now, there is evidence substantiating this version.

Victor: It is circumstantial.

Chance: Now, there are holes in this case, and I think it may be what nick says he cannot live with any longer — a lie.

Victoria: He never said “lie.”

Chance: I know.

Victor: So, chance, tell us, which scenario will you pursue?

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Yes. I am the grinning soul. Now, question — did you know it was me when you were singing his praises earlier?

Chelsea: Yep. You didn’t realize that?

Billy: No, I didn’T.

Chelsea: Not even when I said you respect for the grinning soul probably went both ways?

Billy: I thought you were being supportive.

Chelsea: I was, but I was also trying to get you to admit it. Don’t worry, I don’t think anybody else knows. Your secret is safe.

Billy: Good. Is that what you meant when you said that that is the real me and that I’m not some dude in a suit sitting in an office looking over budgets?

Chelsea: Was I wrong? I just think you’re happier talking into a microphone about whatever you want to talk about than sitting in a c-suite. And frankly, I think secretly you’re hoping lily gives you an ultimatum and you have to decide between executive and podcaster.

Billy: I don’t know. But I do hope I can make a decision without lily having to force my hand.

Chelsea: Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Diane: What exactly are you asking? You can be talking about so many things.

Jack: Okay, so let me clarify. Us — you and me. What are you hoping for from this tenuous relationship?

Diane: Wow, you’re not messing around tonight. You want answers, and you want them now.

Jack: At this stage, after everything we’ve been through. Who has time to mess around?

Diane: There’s a lot of truth in that. So, if you’re asking if my feelings for you go beyond friendship, they do. You know me too well for me to deny it.

[ Chuckles ] When our hands touched before, I — I got butterflies in my stomach. I felt like a schoolgirl.

[ Chuckles ] And as conniving as I was in the past, I was never able to hide my emotions. Jack, that bet I made with myself about earning your friendship was absolutely true. There’s a part of me that wants more. And if I’m being completely honest, those feelings are both thrilling and terrifying.

[ Sighs ]

Jack: Terrifying? I didn’t realize it was that scary.

Diane: No, it’s not you. It’s me. It’s — it’s, my heart has been shut down for so long, I — I didn’t feel like I deserved affection, and I didn’t want it, because then it would make me feel even guiltier about everything I had done. But being back here, my heart is opening up, and it feels so good to be alive in that way again. But I know, in the end, there’s going to be some pain.

Jack: Why do you say that?

Diane: [ Sighs ] Because no matter how deep my feelings for you become, I know that you will never feel the same way about me.

Jack: I don’t —

Diane: You know, I wanted to delay this conversation forever, if possible, so I could — so I could just pretend for a while longer that there was still hope. I just… I didn’t want this daydream to end.

Jack: Well, maybe it doesn’t have to. I will admit that I didn’t see this coming either. But it must be clear to you, I — I, too, have some feelings.

Diane: [ Gasps ]

Jack: Diane. Diane?

Diane: [ Gasps ]

[ Sighs ] – It’s the birthday girl! – Let’s invite jacques

Jack: You seemed to drift off. Where did you go?

Diane: I — I’m — I’m not sure. I just — I think that drink went straight to my head. I just didn’t have enough to eat today.

Jack: So, did you hear what I asked?

Diane: Um, you wanted to know where I thought this was going?

Jack: Yeah, you’re someone who plans, makes goals. Now that you’re settled again in genoa city, I think it would be nice to make those again.

Diane: Well, you’re right. It’s — it’s a good idea.

[ Chuckles ] I just didn’t think that I would be having this conversation with you.

Jack: I’m a little surprised myself.

Diane: So, what exactly do you mean by “plans”?

Jack: Well, I mean, you can’t live in the athletic club forever, now that you have a job, now that kyle has let you back into his life. I mean, what is next for diane jenkins?

Diane: Oh, well, I, um — i haven’t given much thought to my living arrangements. Believe it or not, I’m taking a come-what-may approach to life. I find, if you plan too much for the future, then you don’t have a chance to dream.

Chance: What’s important here is that in both scenarios, ashland locke’s death was an accident, and no one meant for that man to die. And I believe that 100%. Nick was protecting his sister. He had no intention of taking a life. So, moving forward, we can all agree on that.

Victor: Yes, we can.

Chance: Now, context is also important. This man has put your family through hell — a man who lied about a fatal disease, solely for personal gain. I mean, a man like that, you just — you just don’t know what he’s capable of, how far he would go for revenge. So, with all that in mind, a despicable human being is dead. Sad, yes. But not necessarily a crime. Now, I think, given more time and more resources, I certainly could find a conspiracy that covers up the real cause of ashland locke’s death. But what would be the point? I don’t see any reason for anyone to stand trial for the death of a man who was not murdered. He’s put your family through enough trauma.

Nikki: So, what are you saying?

Chance: I will present the first scenario as my official version — that he was still alive, he made it to his car on his own, and he crashed. Terrible man died a terrible death, and no one will be punished for it.

Billy: Alright, it’s getting a little late. Time to get going.

Chelsea: Me, too.

Billy: Thank you very much for the therapy session/talk.

Chelsea: Anytime.

Billy: You’ve, uh — you’ve given me a lot to think about, so I appreciate that.

Chelsea: Hey, um, can I just ask you something before you go? I don’t mean to be pushy — or more pushy than usual — but did victoria mention that I went to see her and I asked her about johnny?

Billy: She did, yeah.

Chelsea: Well, she told me she would consider telling johnny that I’m his birth mother, but I can tell by the look on your face, she’s not on board, is she?

Billy: Just not good timing.

Chelsea: Yeah, I understand that, but the thing is, I’m kind of in a position now where I feel like I’m lying to connor. I’m withholding information from him. He’s at an age where he can understand what’s going on. And I feel like the longer I wait, the more he’s gonna resent me for not telling him earlier. And honestly, I think it could help johnny cope with ashland’s death, finding out that he has a brother.

[ Sighs ] Billy, will you please, please help me try to convince victoria?

Victor: Well, now, chance, I do admire your reasoning.

Nick: I’m glad a decision has been made.

Nikki: I hope we can put this whole episode behind us.

Chance: I want you all to know, I did not come to this decision lightly.

Victor: Of course you didn’T.

Chance: And I have been doing a lot of thinking about something that you said to me, victor. We do what we have to do to protect the ones we love. I’ve always believed in that. But this situation involved the law. And that is something else that I truly believe in. And I believe we did find justice here tonight, in a different way. It wasn’t by the books, but I need to believe we did what was just.

Victor: Chance, you did the right thing, and abby would be very proud of you.

Chance: Alright, well, I’m going to go home and I’m going to try to get some sleep tonight for a change.

Victor: You do that, alright?

Nick: Thanks for everything.

Victoria: Chance, I’ll walk you out. Hey, um, listen. I know it wasn’t easy for you, but you protected the family. And like dad said, you did the right thing.

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: It won’t be forgotten. If there’s anything that we —

Chance: I’m gonna stop you right there. Don’t even make me that offer. It’s not what I expect, and that’s absolutely not why I did this.

Victoria: I didn’t mean to imply that it was.

Chance: I hope you can find peace now. Okay everyone,

Jack: I’m surprised kyle and summer aren’t back yet.

Diane: Oh, they’re young and in love. They deserve a romantic night out once in a while.

Jack: I couldn’t agree more.

Diane: On the other hand, I need to get going. I have to be at work bright and early, and I want to make a good impression on my bosses.

Jack: Are you okay to drive after that little spell?

Diane: Oh, I’m fine. I just got a little lightheaded.

Jack: You sure? I — I could drive you home.. or call you a car.

Diane: No, jack, really, I’m — I’m fine. It’s nice to know you care.

Billy: Look, you’ve made some — some good arguments. Alright? And of course, I will talk to her about it, but right now, I think victoria needs a little bit of time.

Chelsea: I just don’t want to wait too long.

Billy: Look, chelse, I hear you, and like I said, I will talk to her, but I can’t promise anything. But if you want to get what I think you’re looking for, she’s gonna need a little bit of space to come to that decision.

Chelsea: Well, it means a lot to me to even try.

Billy: Of course. I will let you know. I’ll see you soon.

Chelsea: Bye.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Chance came through for us.

Nikki: He made the right decision, after all.

Nick: Still, I’m afraid we may have compromised the most moral man in genoa city.

Victor: He knew damn well he didn’t have enough evidence to hold up in court. We may praise him till the cows come in that he made the right decision. The fact is, he didn’t want to lose.

Nick: That may be. Doesn’t change what happened that night.

Nikki: Honey, you saved your sister. You should be proud of that.

Nick: Yeah. I got to go.

Victoria: Nick? I hope he’ll be okay.

Victor: He’s going to have to deal with the fact that he killed a man, although he knows it was an accident.

Nikki: Even though the investigation cleared him, he’s still going to punish himself.

Victor: He needs all of our support, okay?

Victoria: Wait, hold on. Why would you say that? Do I seem upset?

Chelsea: Victoria, I’m sure you’re still reeling from ashland’s death. I know you two had a lot of ups and downs, and from what I understood, you weren’t together anymore, but it doesn’t mean you stopped caring about him. Are you okay?

Abby: Thank you for taking some time away from the station to meet with me. I had to do some things in the kitchen before I pick up dominic from devon.

Chance: Well, I can go do that.

Abby: No, no, that’s okay. I know you’re busy wrapping things up with the ashland investigation, which is actually why I wanted to talk to you.

Chance: Oh, yeah, what about it?

Abby: I was just wondering where things stand, if you had come to any conclusions.

Chance: You know, I’m still weighing my next steps.

Abby: Look, I know when we talked before, I said I wasn’t going to press you on any of the details about working through this dilemma, but… I spoke with victoria.

Chance: Are you saying that you do have an opinion now?

Billy: Hey. I’m sorry. I hope you got my text message telling you that I was going to be late.

Lily: Well, you’re actually later than you think. You completely missed the video conference.

Billy: I know.

Lily: Which now I have to reschedule, which is going to be really hard to do because everyone’s on different time zones. Do you have any idea how hard it is to set up those meetings?

Billy: I do, actually, yeah. It took me weeks to get that call on the books in the first place.

Lily: Okay. So what was so important that you couldn’t be here?

Billy: Chelsea and I were working on a podcast, and we went on a little bit of run, and I lost track of time.

Lily: Yeah, clearly.

Billy: I’m sorry, lily, okay? I will go back to my office. I will call everyone personally and apologize. And I will set up another call for it as soon as I can get it done. Do you forgive me?

Nate: I’m not trying to pull anything.

Devon: Well, lily just pitched me ideas that you brought to her before bringing to me.

Nate: That’s not what happened at all.

Devon: I never heard them come out of your mouth, so it’s exactly what happened. And I imagine you did that to get them approved by her without having to hear what I had to say or any critique out of me, right?

Billy: You’re making it sound like I don’t like my job, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Okay? And these podcasts are initiatives with this company that we are building. It was my idea to start that platform in the first place, and these podcasts are actually a major generator of our success.

Lily: Yeah, I know. You never let me forget how popular they are.

Billy: Come on, that’s not fair.

Lily: Or always begging me to listen to the latest episode.

Billy: Is that too much to ask of you?

Lily: Actually, yeah, billy, it is a lot to ask right now. It is. I’m trying to deal with merging two companies together. I also am having tension with my family. Devon and nate aren’t getting along. I have a lot going on right now, and I could really use some support from my coo. So is that too much to ask from you?

Victoria: I’m fine, chelsea. Thank you for asking. How are you?

Chelsea: I’m great, actually. Better than I’ve been in a really long time.

Victoria: I hear that you’ve become billy’s co-host. I actually caught a little bit of your first episode.

Chelsea: What’d you think?

Victoria: I was surprised to hear your voice, but you definitely liven things up.

Chelsea: Oh, thanks. It’s fun. It’s liberating to joke about the human condition. You know, sometimes you gotta make yourself laugh just so you don’t make yourself cry.

Victoria: I guess.

Chelsea: Anyway, I’ve shed a lot of tears lately, so it’s a nice change of pace.

Victoria: You know, you were actually right. This isn’t the best time. I have somewhere that I have to be. So what is it that you wanted?

Chelsea: Sure. Um… I spoke to billy about something earlier, and then I realized I should just come to you directly. Did he mention anything?

Victoria: No, I haven’t spoken with him.

Chelsea: I was hoping we can arrange a get-together between johnny and connor.

Abby: I haven’t changed my mind. This is still your investigation. This is your decision to make.

Chance: I hear a “but” coming.

Abby: We promised that we would be open and honest with each other. And so I have to tell you what I’m going through. I spoke to victoria and she told me all of the harrowing details of what happened the night that ashland died. It’s heartbreaking and she must have been terrified and she just wants to put this whole thing behind her.

Chance: Did victoria try to get you to influence me?

Abby: No. No, of course not. But I can see the impact that this nightmare has had on her. And the more you prolong this investigation…

[ Scoffs ] I mean, if you keep pursuing this, I mean, what about my dad? What kind of impact is this going to have on him?

Chance: Look, I understand your concerns, I do, but this is my job, and I can’t just stop doing my job because people I care about are involved. Do you not agree? You think I’m wrong for that? Because, abby, I took an oath, and I take that very seriously, you know that. I swore to find the truth, no matter what.

Abby: Okay, and what is the truth exactly? Let’s say you’re right. Let’s say that your theory about my father is true and you can prove it. I mean, does that change anything? Does it change the fact that ashland died or why? I know that you have a strong sense of duty and you have dedicated your life to service.

Chance: Exactly. And I have pledged over and over again to uphold those values, to honor my mission, protect my community.

Abby: And I love that about you. But now I’m wondering about your other duty — to your family.

Nate: You’ve got to understand, I’m not trying to pull anything. I brought my ideas to lily because she asked for them. She actually wanted to hear what I had to say, unlike you.

Devon: I’ve never had a problem hearing what you have to say or listening to your ideas, ever. You have had a problem hearing my critiques or advice that I have on how you can improve.

Nate: I’m open to criticism, but that’s all you seem to have for any idea that comes from me.

Devon: That’s all I seem to have? The only thing I’ve said to you is that you lack experience and you could maybe use a mentor, and you’ve taken that to heart. I don’t understand. I don’t know how we’re meant to work together or have an open dialog or collaborate when I can’t say anything to you without you getting sensitive about it.

Nate: How am I supposed to do my job when I have to run every move I make by you?

Devon: That is your job, nate. You’re my coo. You run things by me, okay? I feel like because we’re family, you think you can just disregard the chain of command at the company.

Nate: I fully understand the chain of command. How can I not when you take every opportunity to remind me?

Devon: I wish I didn’t have to, believe me, I do, but you’re not getting it for some reason. Lily is the ceo. I’m the other ceo. Billy’s her coo. And you’re mine. You work for me. It’s not the other way around.

Nate: I get it.

Devon: Do you?

Nate: I’m not your equal. But I’m also not your intern, and I don’t appreciate being treated that way. It’s like you don’t want me to have any ideas of my own. I keep getting the message that you want me to be seen but not heard.

Devon: Where are you getting this message from? Because I distinctly remember telling you and encouraging you to speak up any time you have something to say.

Nate: You’ve wanted me to adhere to the company hierarchy? Well, I did. I brought my ideas to lily, your co-leader, as she requested. And frankly, you could learn a thing or two from her if you weren’t so damn bullheaded and egotistical. (Assad) since my mother

Chance: What are you saying right now, abby? That family comes first, always, in your mind, even before justice? I mean, what does that say about my mission, if that’s the case? I mean, wouldn’t it be the height of hypocrisy for me to even be in law enforcement if I put my family above the law?

Abby: Okay, stop. You didn’t let me finish. What I was going to say is that I’m not just worried about victoria. I am worried about the stress that this investigation has put on you, not only you — on on us, on our family, not just the newmans.

Chance: How is this harming our family?

Abby: Okay. Yes. You had a renewed sense of purpose when you went back to work at the gcpd. But I can see the conflict that this investigation has put on you. It’s on a moral level like I have never seen before. And you have been working day and night, maybe to overcompensate for it.

Chance: These are unusual circumstances, abby. And you know I’ve been busting my tail to close all of rey’s cases.

Abby: I love that you want to honor his memory.

Chance: Yes, and rey was one of the most upstanding guys that I’ve ever known. And I’m trying to live up to that legacy. How the hell can I do that if I ignore facts in a case to protect your family?

Abby: Well, you need to know that you are just as upstanding as rey ever was. But there is more to life than just work. Do you want to know what dominic did the other day?

Chance: What, did I miss something?

Abby: So I was looking at him and I was waving bye-bye and his little face lit up with that mischievous grin and he waved bye-bye, and then he said “bye-bye” to me. And you missed it because you missed family dinner time again.

Chance: Abby, I know our little boy’s growing up, and trust me, I hate missing milestones like that, I do, but, I mean, come on, you have your job. Devon spends a lot of time with dominic. Is it really fair to ask me or any of us to be there for every special moment? I have a feeling this is about something else.

Billy: Of course you can count on me to support you as your coo, okay? And I apologize for being late, but please don’t accuse me of not caring about my job, because I do.

Lily: Billy, this is not about you missing a meeting. This is about where your passion lies these days. It’s like when you talk about the podcast, your whole energy changes. But then I don’t see that kind of exuberance when it comes to the corporate world.

Billy: Well, it’s not really a fair comparison, honestly, because both things are kind of what I’m doing right now. Yes, the podcasts are a creative and emotional outlet, but they’re still my job. And my job as coo, that is grounding and stabilizing.

Lily: I think boring is the word that you’re looking for.

Billy: That’s not the word I was looking for, and please don’t misrepresent what I’m feeling.

Lily: Look, my point is, is that if that’s what you want, then I get it. I completely understand. If that’s the case, then you have to step up and own that.

Billy: It’s almost like you’re asking me if I want to quit.

Victoria: No, billy has not mentioned getting johnny and connor together. Why would we do that?

Chelsea: They’re out of school now. They know each other. I think they’d have fun.

Victoria: Johnny has plenty of friends his own age who have similar interests. I’m sure connor does as well. In fact, isn’t he away at camp?

Chelsea: Yeah, but he’ll be back soon, and I thought we could do it then. I’m not saying we would do this tomorrow.

Victoria: Somehow I doubt that this is you trying to organize a play date. So what is it that you’re really asking me?

Chelsea: Connor’s getting older. He still thinks he’s an only child. I would like him to know he has a biological sibling.

Victoria: Oh, I see.

Chelsea: I think it would be really good for johnny too.

Victoria: I have a pretty good grasp on what my son needs.

Chelsea: Victoria, you said yourself, johnny is older than connor. He’s going to be, you know, mature enough soon to understand all of this.

Victoria: Again, that’s a call for billy and me to make.

Chelsea: I’m not trying to cause problems for you, I promise. I just think it would be great for both boys.

Victoria: Need I remind you of our original agreement? Look, I always intended to tell johnny the full truth at some point. He already knows that I’m not his biological mother.

Chelsea: He doesn’t know that I am.

Victoria: What is the sudden urgency?

Chelsea: Because we haven’t talked about it, victoria, and things are happening in life that are reminding me that tomorrow’s not promised. I think pushing things aside and keeping secrets is not the answer.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] It’s not as though I am keeping some nefarious secret.

Chelsea: No. Of course not. But the longer we wait, the more it starts to look that way. Johnny and connor are gonna think we kept the secret from them on purpose. I mean, what message does that tell them when they do find out? Because, victoria, eventually they are going to find out.

Victoria: I just told the kids that their stepfather died, and they’re still processing that. This is not a good time, chelsea.

Chelsea: I know this is very complicated and very messy, but what if johnny resents us, that we knew something this whole time that he didn’t? What happens when the boys find out they’re not cousins, they’re brothers? Victoria, don’t get me wrong. You are johnny’s mother, and you have done an incredible job of raising him. I am not going to impinge on that.

Victoria: No, you won’T.

Chelsea: I’m not trying to pretend I’m his mom, I swear. I’m just asking if we can approach this with some honesty. Begin to approach the boys with a little bit of truth so they don’t think we were keeping this secret from them the whole time. We both know how secrets can destroy a family.

Devon: Nate, why don’t you tell me what leadership qualities you admire so much about lily that I apparently lack?

Nate: Well, she clearly knows how to lead a team and delegate when necessary instead of trying to do everything on her own.

Devon: Hmm.

Nate: She’s willing to listen to others and let them run with good ideas. It’s motivating, inspiring.

Devon: And how did she respond to you when you told her your ideas? What did she say exactly?

Nate: She said they were worth considering.

Devon: They’re worth considering. So that’s not a green light to move forward, right? And I imagine that you know that initiatives like this take a whole lot of time and planning and putting a team together. So did you assume that you would just move this past lily and then start creating our own music festival and changing our streaming strategy on your own? Because that’s not the way things work there.

Nate: There it is — your obsessive need for total control.

Devon: Obsessive.

Nate: For autonomy. It is stifling.

Devon: Nate, you know what, man? I think — here’s what I think. I think that you can’t handle being inexperienced at something.

Nate: You keep blaming your rejection of my ideas on my inexperience. That excuse is starting to wear thin.

Devon: It’s not a lie, though, right? It’s very much the truth. You don’t have a lot of business experience. I swear, it’s like ever since things turned out in your favor after what you pulled at the launch, you think you can do anything you want and not follow any rules.

Nate: Whose rules? Yours? Because they seem to be the only ones that matter.

Devon: Yes, my rules. Who else, nate? Who do you work for? You’re my coo. How do you not understand that?

Nate: [ Chuckles ] You’re getting all worked up. What are you going to do, punch me again?

Devon: Wow. No, I’m not.

Nate: Mm.

Devon: But I can see now that this is clearly about more than just work. So you need to figure yourself out before we talk again.

Chelsea: I know this is a lot to process, and I’m sorry for bringing up to you out of the blue. Billy said he would mention it to you, but then I realized i should just talk to you directly. It’s not fair to make him the go-between.

Victoria: I see.

Chelsea: I’m not trying to rush you into anything. I know it’s a big ask and we need to handle this with care. Maybe we just all take some time to think about it.

Victoria: I appreciate you coming to me. And I’ll consider it… because I think you’re right. Even secrets that are kept in kindness can do a lot more damage than anyone expects.

Lily: Well, I think that you are really taking this conversation to an extreme. I am certainly not suggesting that you quit. But I think it’s very interesting that your mind went there. Is that what you want?

Billy: No. No, that is not what I want. And I’m sorry that this conversation escalated to that place. Wasn’t my intention. I think I’m just missing you. With you being out of town, any spare time that I’ve had has been in the studio, and I got caught up, okay? It won’t happen again.

Lily: Yeah. I mean, look, I don’t — I don’t want to fight.

Billy: I don’t want to fight with you, either. You have been in nonstop meetings since you got back. I haven’t even been able to say hello to you.

Lily: Yeah, I haven’t even opened the gift that you got me.

Billy: Yes, I got your message. You wanted to wait till we were together.

Lily: Yes. It’s very romantic. I thought maybe I might need help putting it on.

Billy: Well, don’t get too caught up. It’s nothing — nothing crazy.

Lily: Oh. Airpods?

Billy: You said the ones you were using are ruined and it wrecked your flight, so i thought I’d get you some new ones.

Lily: Yeah. Thank you. It’s very practical.

[ Case thuds ] But, um, listen. I do think that you need to seriously think about what it is that you want.

Abby: You’re right. There is a lot more going on here. I think you need to take a cold, hard look at the pressures of this case.

Chance: Look, I admit it’s been intense. Everyone wants me to do the right thing right now, abby, and that’s exactly what I want to do. I am just completely torn on what that is.

Abby: Well, maybe you should stop pressing so hard for answers.

Chance: I am not the one who’s pressing. It is coming from every single one of your family members, including adam. I mean, everyone wants to know my thoughts on the investigation. Your father even threw a hypothetical at me. He asked what I would have done if you had been forced to accidentally hurt stitch when that whole thing happened. Would I have protected you?

Abby: I’m so sorry. I had no idea.

Chance: It’s fine. You know, I can handle the mind games. I can. But I am not immune to the pull of family loyalty.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Chance: And as much as you insist this is my decision, I cannot help feeling that you have an opinion.

Abby: Your opinion is the only one that matters, no matter what else everyone says.

Chance: I honestly hope that’s the truth.

Abby: Actually, um, we’re kind of in the middle of something.

Victoria: Well, go right ahead. Don’t worry. Your husband will be in good hands. I just have something that i need to follow up with him on.

Abby: Okay.

Victoria: My father tells me that you’ve uncovered video footage from the night that ashland died that you feel supports your theory that he was somehow involved in what happened. But I don’t understand how grainy footage of some guy, some — some guy smoking getting into ashland’s rental car is solid proof of anything.

Chance: Agreed.

Victoria: Of course, I know you’ll do what your conscience dictates, and no one would ask you to do anything else.

Chance: Well, they might not ask me directly, but you know your family. They are masters at indirect pressure. I’m over here waiting for a desperate plea, some kind of veiled newman threat.

Victoria: Trust me — that’s not gonna happen. In fact, that’s why I’m here right now.

Chance: Oh, yeah?

Victoria: When I was with abby earlier, I wasn’t aware of the — the new evidence, and I, um — I’m afraid that maybe i insinuated that she lean on you for my benefit. And that was not — that was not fair. What I admire about you the most is your sense of right and wrong. You continued to dig until you had clarity on what really happened, and I just — I want you to know that I accept that you must do what you have to do. You’re a good person, and i would never want to push you into doing anything that was against your better instincts.

Chance: Well, I’m glad to hear that.

Victoria: However, I have to reiterate that a man came after me with violent intentions and he was stopped. And now my family and my children and I are safe. I think that the outcome was what was best for everyone involved.

Devon: Gosh, I always hate saying goodbye to this little guy. But it’s probably for the best today. I know when I got home to pick him up, he was starting to get fussy ’cause I think he could tell that I was worked up.

Abby: Yeah, we have a sensitive little boy. He can pick up on all the moods around him, like whatever has you so upset.

Devon: [ Chuckles ] It’s, uh, working with family. It’s a lot more difficult than i thought.

Abby: Are you and lily having difficulties?

Devon: No. No, it’s not lily. It’s nate.

Abby: Nate?

Devon: Mm.

Abby: Ah. Well, what’s the problem?

Devon: The problem is, is he’s just trying to do too much too fast, which wouldn’t be a problem, except he doesn’t like to listen to any advice, and he thinks that he knows better than everybody else.

Abby: That doesn’t sound like nate.

Devon: No. I — I hadn’t seen this side of him before we started working together. But it’s just like he wants to be instantly successful and launch all these new initiatives all at once without learning the ropes.

Abby: Maybe you could talk to him, rein him in a little bit?

Devon: Uh, when I’ve tried to talk to him before and give him advice, he says I’m treating him like an intern.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Well, that’s no fun.

Devon: No, it’s not. Wasn’t supposed to be this hard, abby.

Abby: You know, when work and family mix, things can get complicated.

Billy: [ Whistles ] What are you doing here?

Victoria: Well, I was hoping to gather my thoughts over a quiet drink, but it seems like everywhere I turn today, I keep running into reminders of my messy life.

Billy: Oh, wow. And here I thought I worked my way back into your good books.

Victoria: Well, that was before I got sandbagged by chelsea wanting to tell johnny the truth about his biological mother, and apparently she’s already discussed this with you. So, thank you so much, billy, for the heads-up.

Billy: I’m sorry. She did talk to me about it. And of course I was gonna talk to you about it, but… vick, I know you got a lot going on. I didn’t think it was the right time.

Victoria: It was perfect timing for chelsea.

Billy: Well, chelsea jumped the gun. This is a massive decision.

Victoria: Look, it’s not that I disagree telling johnny the truth, but he’s trying to understand what happened with ashland. I mean, we all are.

Billy: Of course we’re gonna have to tell johnny. When that is, I don’t — I don’t know, but I do know that the older he gets, the harder it’s gonna be to justify not telling him.

Victoria: It’s just, why is it suddenly so urgent? It raises a red flag.

Billy: I get that. And believe me, I’m not pushing for this.

Victoria: [ Sighs heavily ] Look, I have no interest in trying to wrap my head around this tonight. I was just trying to figure out a way to [Sighs] Just relax so that maybe I would get a little sleep tonight.

Billy: Well [Pats seat ] Come on. Sit down and let me buy you a drink. I’ll bore you senseless with my self-absorption about my podcast. You’ll sleep like a baby.

Abby: [ Sighs ] Trust me. I feel your pain. Family turmoil can be overwhelming. You know, I wake up every morning praying for peace, no more drama, but I realize that that’s probably never gonna happen because my husband is a police officer.

Devon: Well, I remember not too long ago, your husband was on a secret mission and we all thought he was dead for a minute. So, I don’t know how gcpd could be worse than that.

Abby: No, not worse, just stressful. I wasn’t thrilled about him going back to work on the gcpd. I thought maybe it was too much too soon, that he wasn’t ready.

Devon: But he’s been doing okay, though, right?

Abby: It seemed to be helping him heal until rey’s death.

Devon: Yeah. I imagine that was tough. I know they were close.

Abby: Yeah. And now he’s just been overcompensating. He’s been trying to close all of rey’s cases, working these crazy, long hours. And, well, recently, he’s come upon a case that has left him in a moral quandary.

Devon: What’s it about?

Abby: I can’t say too much, but let’s just say it’s about ashland’s death.

Devon: Well, I imagine that’s got to — that’s got to affect you a little bit ’cause it has something to do with your family.

Abby: It’s not just the late hours. It’s the pressure, the stress that it’s put on him — and, therefore, all of us.

Devon: Well, why don’t you put your foot down and tell him you don’t want him to work as much?

Abby: No, no. I don’t think now is the time to be putting demands on him. You know, sometimes people just need to make their own decisions and mistakes.

Devon: That’s very mature of you.

[ Both chuckle ]

Abby: Well, hey, maybe you could try that with nate. You know, even though you see all of the pitfalls, you let him, you know, take some risks, and if it blows up in his face, then, hey, he has no one to blame but himself.

Devon: Right. Yeah. I’ll think about that.

Abby: Yeah, right. No, you are not interested in that plan at all. I can tell. [ Laughs ]

Devon: No, I just don’t think I’m as evolved as you, abby. I don’T. But is that really what you’re gonna do? Are you gonna let chance find his own way?

Abby: Mm. I realize that maybe my advice is easier said than done. And I think I just tried to guilt chance into doing what i wanted him to do instead of talking to him directly.

Devon: Hmm. So, what you’re saying is neither one of us are perfect.

Abby: Far from it. And, uh, we’re not really great at practicing what we preach. Mnh-mnh.

[ Both laugh ]

Victoria: Thank you.

Victoria: You know, I was thinking that maybe I would take the kids away somewhere…

Victoria: …Before school starts. For a while, I really wasn’t even sure that I wanted to send them back to boarding school. I’ve missed them so much.

Billy: Yeah. No. Me too. It’s been so nice having them home.

Victoria: But, you know, maybe away is the best place for them right now.

Billy: You mean as far away from any publicity about ashland as possible. I-I think that’s smart because the truth is we have no idea what unsavory stories are gonna come up now that he’s gone.

Victoria: Just that they deserve the chance to be kids, just kids away from real-world problems.

Billy: Yeah. I would love to have them back, but I think you’re right. Hey, good news is we don’t have to figure this out tonight.

Victoria: So, what are you doing here, drinking alone? Where’s lily?

Billy: Uh, she’s at work, of course. She loves her job.

Victoria: Is there a problem? Is something wrong?

Billy: No. No, not — not really. Okay. You know, I just feel like i should probably have a better handle on my life.

[ Sighs ] I feel like I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

Billy: Yes, well, I am very consistent. And apparently, the more i change, the more I stay the same.

Victoria: [ Laughs ] Yeah. You know what? I have to give you credit. You still can get me out of my own head and make me laugh, especially when I need it.

Kevin: I have good news and bad news. Which would you like first?

Chance: Uh, hit me with the bad.

Kevin: Got dna off the cigarette butt, but victor’s security guys have disappeared, so we can’t subpoena them to see if they’re a match.

Chance: [ Sighs, groans ] And the good news?

Kevin: A bloody print found on the inside door handle of ashland’s car.

Chance: Well, that would indicate that ashland did, in fact, make it back to his car and drove off.

Kevin: Not exactly. The blood is ashland’s, but the print is going to be extremely hard to match because it’s a partial.

Chance: Why is that good news?

Kevin: Because one thing is clear — it’s not ashland’S. Whatever gives you life that you should be able to do finding peAbby: I love that we can call

Devon: I know, right? I just wish that nate and i could get to that place.

Abby: You know, it’s not easy finding people that you can be totally honest with without them taking offense.

Devon: Or take offense and get over it. How about that?

Abby: Right? [ Laughs ] And why is it the very people that you should be able to do that with, it’s just way too difficult? I mean, maybe we should just try harder.

Devon: Well… but you and chance can do that, though, right? Like, from what you’ve told me, he’s not fighting you anything. He just has a lot going on.

Abby: Maybe the same can be said about nate.

Devon: I’m not so sure about that. It feels like nate is fighting me at every turn. And if it’s this hard now, maybe it’s just a sign of bigger problems.

[ Glass thuds ]

Billy: Can I get you another?

Victoria: No. I think I’ve had enough. But, uh, I want to thank you for the chat. It definitely helped.

Billy: [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: I think I might actually even get some sleep tonight.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] You know, of all the gin joints….

Billy: Hey.

Chelsea: Hey.

Billy: When did you get here?

Chelsea: I saw you talking to victoria.

Billy: Ah.

Chelsea: It seemed serious. I didn’t want to interrupt. You know, you two have been able to maintain quite the friendship. It’s impressive.

Billy: Well, believe me, that hasn’t always been the case.

Chelsea: I don’t know. In some ways, I always thought you and victoria brought out the best in each other.

Chance: The car was a rental, so there should be a ton of prints that aren’t ashland’S.

Kevin: True, which is why this one is so curious.

Chance: Why?

Kevin: Because we haven’t found any other prints. The car was meticulously wiped clean, and there were no signs of ashland’s blood anywhere else, either. That’s why I had the techs go back, process the car again, and that’s when they came up with the partial.

Chance: A rental with no prints.

Kevin: Except this one. It further strengthens the recovered video evidence that somebody else was driving ashland’s car.

Chance: The smoker. And he had ashland’s blood on his hands.

Kevin: If your alternate theory is true — that victor’s security guards moved ashland’s body and staged the accident.

Chance: This could be our chance to prove it.

Kevin: So, what’s it gonna be? Do we set up the time and manpower to track down these missing security guards, possibly across state lines, to get their prints and dna? Or do you have enough to take this case to the D.A.?

Summer: Thank you for suggesting this night out. Things have been so crazy lately, we’ve hardly have any time to be alone. Today has been quite a day with mom starting work at marchetti.

Kyle: I was wondering if our mothers have managed to be on their best behavior around each other. Yeah, they kept their word.

Summer: So far, at least.

Kyle: I think we should take the win and not talk about our mothers the rest of the evening.

Summer: Fine by me.

Kyle: I just want to focus on you and us. That okay?

Summer: More than okay.

Kyle: Good, because I have a surprise for you.

Summer: Mm.

Jack: It’s no problem. I understand. We’ll just reschedule.

[ Knock on door ] Yeah, we’ll talk then. Perfect. Well, I didn’t expect to see you here. This is definitely after hours.

Diane: [ Chuckles ] Says the man still chained to his desk. Not that I’m comparing the demands of being a ceo to that of a junior publicist. But I just wanted to say good night. How much longer will you be here?

Jack: Well, I was actually supposed to have a dinner meeting tonight, but that just got canceled, which is not a problem. Except all day I have been building this craving for the food at society.

Diane: Oh. Well, I was about to swing by there and pick up something for myself. I could put a takeout order in for you or… or, hey, if you’d like, we could go and eat together. I would — I would love to talk to you about my first few days at marchetti, and I would gladly hear any feedback you had to offer. Interested?

Phyllis: I am assuming we are alone.

Nikki: Yes, yes. Let’s get to it.

Phyllis: Okay. Well, thanks for the warm welcome. I mean, you called me here.

Nikki: Okay. I’m sorry. I have a lot on my mind.

Phyllis: Okay. I’m assuming it has to do with ashland locke, right?

Nikki: His death continues to affect our family. But you and I have more things to deal with, so… how was your first day at marchetti?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] I handled it masterfully, if I do say so myself. Masterfully. Nobody there has any idea that I have a secret plan to sabotage diane.

Nikki: Well, given that all eyes are on you, that should be the bare minimum. Were you able to take steps to damage her reputation at the company?

Phyllis: I mean, well, it’s the first day. Don’t get me wrong, nobody wants diane gone more than I do. But, I mean, it’s going to take some time and finesse. You know that. And need I remind you, you know, while I’m there in the trenches, you’re at home sipping tea, doing nothing to further our cause.

Nikki: [ Chuckles ] That’s where you’re wrong.

Elena: Hey.

Devon: Hey.

Elena: I was stopping by to see nate before the night shift. I was hoping to spend a little time with him before the end of his workday.

Devon: Oh, that’s nice. He’s not here. I don’t know where he’s at.

Elena: Oh, no worries. I’ll shoot him a text and let you get back to work.

Devon: Yeah. Hey, I heard that you got out of your contract with newman media and you’re able to come and join us. So I need to officially welcome you to chancellor-winters.

Devon: Yeah, I’m looking forward to having you part of the team. You don’t seem super excited about it, though. Is coming here what you still want to do or is something else going on?

Nate: Well, welcome home.

Lily: Hi.

Nate: And congratulations on knocking it out of the park on your trip.

Lily: Thank you. It was definitely time well spent, that’s for sure. But I am happy to be home because you know how it is, when you’re gone away a long time, the more you realize you’ve missed.

Nate: I suspect you came back to more than you bargained for as far as devon and I are concerned. I assume you’ve spoken with him.

Lily: I have, yes. So I thought it was a good idea if you and I had a conversation, but maybe away from the office.

Nate: I appreciate that.

Lily: So, look, first, I just want to say that I knew that this transition time would be, you know, a challenge as we’re all kind of settling into our positions. Right? I mean, I went from running a media division to this huge entity. And for devon, the same. But, you know, for you, you went from medicine to business, which is a huge shift. So I’m not looking to place blame on anyone. I’m really not. I just want to hear from you why you think that you and devon are having a hard time co-existing at the office.

Nate: Alright. But before I get too far into it, I’d like to know if I’m talking purely professionally to the co-ceo of chancellor-winters or if I’m speaking to my cousin. Just how real can I be with you?

Lily: Well, look, if we’re gonna move forward and fix this, then I want you to be as real as possible. I will do great things today.

Summer: I have to admit, as happy as I am to be back in genoa city, there are still moments when I miss italy.

Kyle: I do too. That’s why I thought we could enjoy a little taste of it this evening.

Summer: Do you remember that first night we discovered that other rooftop deck with the best negronis in the city? We held hands across the table like we didn’t want to let go.

Summer: And we danced until we could not dance anymore.

Kyle: When we finally got home, we stayed up all night wrapped in each other’s arms, watched the sunrise. Should make sure to make more of those memories, no matter where we are.

Summer: I would love that. And I love you.

Jack: I’m not sure I’m the one you should be talking to about your job performance. Wouldn’t it be better to pick kyle’s brain?

Diane: I suspect kyle might take a softer approach. I am his mother after all.

Jack: Yeah, you have a point there.

Diane: Yes, and besides, you gave me really good advice before, and I know you’ll give me the cold, hard truth, which is what I need if I’m going to succeed. As you know, jack, this is — this is really an important job for me to do well at. I need to prove myself to our son. And I need to show him that I’m worthy of the second chance I’ve been given. Interested?

Jack: Okay. Dinner it is.

Phyllis: Okay. I’m sorry, I thought we were all in agreement that we were going to take diane down, and I was going to do that by working at marchetti. Are you going rogue?

Nikki: Not at all. I have a meeting with an L.A.-Based investigative reporter tonight.

Phyllis: Oh, listen to this. You found an ally.

Nikki: Actually, she found me. She’s looking for a juicy story, and diane certainly fits that bill.

Phyllis: I’m very intrigued. I mean, even if she doesn’t come up with any ammo to use against diane, I certainly can — can have her expose whatever, you know, career-ending, relationship-destroying information that I find.

Nikki: I would be open to that, should that become an option. But first things first, I want to see how this initial meeting goes.

Phyllis: Right. I mean, I could help on the back end. You know, could I meet this journalist with you?

Elena: Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with chancellor-winters. And even though the hospital is my priority, I love that I’m going to be able to reach more people and offer my guidance and support. And I’m also really excited to expand on the scope of what I’ve already been working on.

Devon: Okay, that all sounds great. It must be something else on your mind, then.

Elena: I don’t know. I guess I’m still just coming to terms with the reality of nate’s job here. It’s certainly thrown me some curveballs. If I’m being honest… I feel like we’re kind of drifting apart. And I think we’ll be okay. I don’t know, maybe it’s just a reminder that things don’t always go as expected.

Devon: Yeah, certainly don’T. I’m sorry that you’re feeling like this, though. But I definitely know what you mean.

Nate: Devon believes I need more guidance to better understand my position at the company. He thinks I’m not respecting his boundaries or his authority, which is simply not true. I have a great deal of admiration for devon, and I totally respect his experience. But I think he’s been autonomous for so long, he’s forgotten how to collaborate.

Lily: Really? I mean, that hasn’t been my experience with him.

Nate: That might be because the two of you are equals. You’re co-ceos and siblings. We don’t have that same dynamic.

Lily: Okay. So, I mean, what do you think the source of the problem is?

Nate: Inflexibility and, frankly, ego. Devon refuses to accept any good ideas if they’re not his own. And I have given him some pretty damn good ideas. Have I also made some missteps? Absolutely. But that doesn’t mean I’m not motivated to do everything I can to make chancellor-winters better. Everything I’ve done has been with one goal in mind — chancellor-winters’ success. I just don’t believe devon should constantly hold me back when there are so many things we could accomplish.

Lily: Okay, well, give me an example.

Nate: One, I’d like to broaden the talent pool and the styles of acts we sign, then create our own festivals across the country to showcase them.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, I like the concept, but, I mean, the logistics are very complicated.

Nate: That doesn’t mean it’s not worth exploring. And even if it’s not viable, we can definitely expand our streaming platforms to appeal to a wider audience. Devon is too particular and selective with his vision. He handpicks the acts based on his personal taste.

Lily: Yeah, but I think that’s what sets us apart, right? I mean, he’s like a curator.

Nate: Well, that’s fine for a boutique business owner, but for a company like ours, we should be thinking global conquest. There’s no reason for devon to feel threatened by this approach or have any issues with the ideas other than they come from me.

Kyle: I should really learn how to make negronis at home.

Summer: Mm, so we can have a taste of italy without ever leaving the house?

Kyle: I don’t care where we are, as long as I get to look at this.

Summer: You know, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like these at first. Gin, vermouth, campari, and an orange peel.

Kyle: It is an unusual combination, but sometimes those are the best kinds. Things that don’t seem to go together, but somehow do.

Summer: An unexpected yet magical elixir.

Kyle: Exactly.

[ Chuckles ] Maybe we should head home to have that swim. If no one else is around, we can forget our swimsuits. What do you say? What’s the matter?

Summer: Um… I’m not sure yet. What is wrong with that picture?

Kyle: There’s nothing necessarily wrong. Odd, maybe.

Summer: My mom and grandma barely gave each other the time of day.

Kyle: Setting aside old grudges and rivalries is the new trend of genoa city.

Summer: Right, but why would they be here to chat over drinks? In what universe does that make any sense? Something’s up.

Diane: I’ve been trying to find a balance at work my first few days. I don’t want to come on too strong, but I also don’t want to be invisible.

Jack: I somehow don’t think you could manage to fly under the radar if you wanted to.

Diane: You know what I mean. I’m just trying to navigate office politics, I guess.

Jack: Well, just don’t be so hard on yourself. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither were italian fashion houses. Trust your gut. Trust your instincts. You’re a smart, resourceful woman.

Diane: Oh, thank you. I’d like to think so. But after my meeting with mariah, wow, I felt like a neophyte. I mean, don’t — don’t — don’t get me wrong. I think we’re going to work really well together once I get a bit more experienced. It’s just that young woman, she really knows what she’s doing.

Jack: I’m very impressed with mariah myself. Did kyle maybe mention that he recruited her? No background in cosmetics, no experience in marketing, and yet he somehow thought she was right for the job.

Diane: She’s a powerhouse, and it kind of hit home how much I have to learn.

Jack: My point is, kyle has an eye for talent. He didn’t just hire you because you’re his mother. He obviously has some faith in your ability to meet the challenge.

Diane: And I will. But it’s certainly humbling being a junior employee and reporting to someone young enough to be your daughter.

Jack: So think of it as a stepping stone. My god, what you’ve done in your life — you have been a model, an architect, a realtor. You’ve managed to climb the ladder and so many different fields.

Diane: Thank you for your support, jack. It means a lot. And since we’re being so open with each other, I, uh… I do have another confession to make.

Kyle: Phyllis and nikki have some things in common, like you, nick, or maybe there’s some other reasonable explanation they’re together.

Summer: I just have a really weird feeling about this.

Kyle: I get it, but it’s not really any of our business. Tonight’s supposed to be about us.

Summer: You’re right. I’m sorry. Let’s get back to what’s important.

Talia: Hi.

Nikki: Oh, hi, talia. Please sit down. Thank you so much for joining us. This is my friend phyllis summers.

Phyllis: Nice to meet you.

Talia: You too.

Nikki: Phyllis and I go way back, and we both go way back with diane.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Talia: Your name has come up in my research.

Phyllis: Oh, really? Wow. Okay, well, usually when people say my name’s come up, it makes me nervous, but not in this case, because diane is the infamous one here.

Nikki: Well, talia first contacted me wanting to do an article about ashland’s death and how it affected our family. But I told her I thought that was old news, that the newmans were just fine.

Phyllis: Well…

Nikki: And then I told her about diane’s resurrection.

Talia: And I became very interested. I sensed that would be a fabulous story for my magazine.

Phyllis: I couldn’t agree more.

Elena: When you say you know what I mean, I assume you’re talking about your issues with nate and the tension that’s been developing between you two.

Devon: That is a great assumption.

Elena: Well, I guess we can’t resolve any of that now, so there’s no point in jumping into a whole nother conversation about it, is there?

Devon: Mnh-mnh, mnh-mnh, not at all. But I want you to know that no matter what issues nate and I have professionally, it’s not going to change the way I feel about him. He’s family. And any concerns that you have about that or anything else, you know you can always talk to me because I consider you family, too. It’s nice that we’re still so close and that you live literally across the hall.

Elena: Yeah. I feel the same way.

Devon: Thanks. You know, this — this whole thing with me and lily and nate and billy working together is definitely a transition. It’s going to have some difficulties. But I certainly don’t want the tension to ever affect you or your home life with nate.

Elena: Thank you for saying that. And I will try my best.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: Anyway, I should get going.

Devon: Alright, I will see you around.

Elena: See you.

Nate: Every time devon shuts me down, he claims it’s not personal, but it seems pretty damn personal to me. Have I gone too far now?

Lily: No. No, no, no. Look, I told you to be frank, and honestly, I really appreciate your candor. I do. And thank you for sharing your ideas with me, because I think that they’re actually worth considering.

Nate: Thank you.

Lily: You’re welcome. So, I mean, how do you see things moving forward with you and devon? Because a little tension with a colleague is very normal, but a lot can be very disruptive, right? And honestly, I don’t think it’s all coming from him.

Nate: I apologize for my part in that tension. The fact that you’re really listening to me right now makes me wonder what I’ve been doing wrong with devon. I truly want this to work, and I know devon and i have to find our footing. I finally feel like that can happen now because of you.

Lily: Oh, thank you. I try.

Diane: I know since I showed up back in town, I’ve projected a sense of confidence. Some might even call me brazen, but in reality, I’ve — I’ve been nervous, fearful even, about what the future might hold, about starting over with kyle and then building a whole other life for myself here again. But I have to say, what I feel most right now is excitement to be at this stage of my life and have so many firsts, starting with being a respectable and upstanding member of genoa city society.

Jack: No comment.

Diane: [ Laughs ] No, well, seriously. Being a grandmother has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and starting a new career is exciting. Although I have to say, phyllis’s sudden appearance on the payroll at marchetti really threw me off my game.

Jack: Yes, I know how upset you were when she was hired, spewing all kinds of accusations and suspicions.

Diane: Well, I can imagine that you understand my reluctance to ever trust phyllis. But that being said, I am determined to take the high road, even if she can’T.

Talia: Now, I’m sure you both can give me a wealth of info. I’d also like to speak to jack abbott at some point.

Nikki: Oh, that can be arranged.

Talia: I’m curious about those years in L.A. As well.

Phyllis: Uh, so are we. I mean, it seems so unlikely that diane was just living a quiet life in los angeles and she just stumbled across jack’s granddaughter.

Talia: Does strike me as an unlikely coincidence.

Nikki: Now, talia, I have to tell you that I have had people in los angeles digging around. They haven’t found anything yet.

Phyllis: I mean, did nikki tell you that diane was sending jack a bunch of cryptic text messages, getting him to come to L.A.? Did she tell you that? I mean, to me, that just doesn’t seem like a changed woman.

Nikki: Well, I don’t really think that that is worth exploring, because diane has already acknowledged she was just trying to become sympathetic in jack’s eyes by uniting him with his granddaughter.

Phyllis: Okay, I know that’s what diane said, but, I mean, she’s the investigative reporter. We’ll let her decide.

Nikki: I’m just trying to prevent her from wasting her valuable time. It behooves all of us for her to publish her story quickly.

Phyllis: Well, okay. I mean, maybe we shouldn’t be focusing on her time in L.A. Maybe — maybe we should be focusing on her time right here in genoa city. We have full access to this woman, so we can help in any way possible with this investigation.

Nate: Hey. Glad we got to see each other tonight. Do you want to stay here or go somewhere else for dinner?

Elena: This is fine. I’m not that hungry.

Nate: Okay, come sit.

Nate: Yes, I should have been, but lily’s back and she asked me to meet her here.

Nate: To keep things low key and to avoid any interruptions by devon.

Elena: Ah. So I guess lily is up to speed with what happened with you and devon.

Nate: She is.

Elena: So how’d that go? Was it a rough conversation?

Nate: The opposite, actually. I think things are finally going to start heading in the right direction.

Lily: Alright. Well, I’m glad we had a chance to touch base about the tour.

Devon: Me, too. We’re all set and booked in every major venue across the midwest.

Lily: Yeah, great. Actually, a couple more ideas I have that I wanted to run by you if you have time.

Devon: I do have time, yeah. What’s up?

Lily: Um…well, I was thinking that, you know, maybe we should adjust our strategy when it comes to music festivals and the kind of music we have on our streaming services.

Devon: Adjust it how?

Lily: Well, maybe we do our own music festival?

[ Chuckles ] Or maybe we have on different musical acts, so that way we can reach a bigger and broader audience.

Devon: Yeah, my first thought is that our own music festival is pretty ambitious and I would be concerned that we would be stretching ourselves a little thin. But…

Lily: Okay.

Devon: I mean, if we were able to pull something like that off, I see it being pretty damn cool. We should get everybody together and have a meeting to talk about it.

Lily: Really? Okay, so you’ll keep an open mind? ‘Cause, I mean, I think I made a pretty good pitch.

Devon: Of course you do. They’re your ideas.

Lily: Well, actually, they’re not my ideas. They’re nate’S. I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Nate: It was great to feel heard by lily, to have my instincts validated. She liked my ideas, and i am confident she’ll support them with devon.

Elena: That sounds great, but how exactly does that resolve your issues with devon?

Nate: Lily gets what’s going on with devon. Not that she let me off the hook for my role in the conflict either. She’s made it clear she thinks it’s a two-way street, but she also understands that I’m doing everything I can to help make chancellor-winters better, sometimes in spite of devon. He’s acknowledged that the two of them keep each other in check. So when lilly backs me up, I feel like devon will have no choice but to stop instantly squashing my ideas. I thought you’d agree this was a positive development. What am I missing?

Devon: Now, wait a second. Did nate, like, put you up to this, to try and trick me and prove that I only like your ideas or something?

Lily: No, no. Nate shared his ideas with me, and I chose to pitch them to you to see if maybe you would respond differently if it came from someone else.

Devon: Why is my coo bringing his ideas to you before bringing them to me?

Lily: No, I asked to meet with him. I encouraged him to open up to me, and I just wanted to gauge for myself how you would respond if the idea came from someone else. And, you know, now that you know it’s his idea and not mine, does that change your opinion at all? Because, I mean, based on your previous reaction, I feel like maybe it would have.

Devon: No, it wouldn’t have. It wouldn’t have at all. And for you to do this, it’s a little underhanded.

Lily: Okay. I’m sorry. I am, but maybe it had to happen this way to kind of open up your eyes to this bias you might have against him. Look, I just — I’m trying to help, okay? I want to fix this, because if this keeps going on, it could get way out of hand.

Devon: Well, you didn’t have to trick me.

Lily: Okay, you know what? You’re right. You’re right. I’m sorry.

Devon: I appreciate you trying to solve this problem between us, but you really don’t have to insert yourself because it’s between me and nate. Okay?

Lily: Well, devon —

[ Sighs ]

Jack: You and phyllis managed to survive day one as coworkers. That’s no small thing. Here’s to following suit in the days ahead.

Diane: I hope so, too. But you know what? Even if phyllis does try to undermine me, I’m on the lookout for it. And whatever her agenda is, it will be over before it begins.

Jack: You seem very calm and levelheaded in saying that.

Diane: Yes, I refuse to get worked up about it ever again. And don’t tell phyllis this because it kills me to admit it, but… in a way, I empathize with her.

Jack: Wait, how so?

Diane: Oh, now, don’t read too much into it. I’m just saying that I understand why phyllis feels the way she does. I came back into her life in a way that feels intrusive to her. And as someone who’s been the ultimate outsider, I suppose I can’t blame her. She feels threatened by me. Displaced.

Jack: Yeah, I think that about sums it up.

Diane: Yeah. Well, now that harrison knows I’m his grandmother, I get to spend so much time with him and summer and kyle and… oh, look at us, sitting here having an enjoyable, pleasant meal together. Must really get phyllis.

Jack: I hope you have the good sense not to rub it in her face the next time you encounter her.

Diane: Oh, I will do my best not to add to the tension. But you know what? If I was one of her friends, I would encourage her to just relax, because even though I’ve reentered her world, I’m not trying to take anything from her. Summer adores phyllis and loves having her at marchetti.

Jack: Just as kyle loves having you at work.

Diane: Yes, and harrison? Oh, my gosh, that little boy is filled with so much love that phyllis doesn’t need to worry about me lessening her connection to him. And you and phyllis, you have such a long history and a deep bond so that even though you think you’re not going to reunite with her, you’ve — you’ve let her into your heart time and time again. Maybe you will this time, too.

Diane: Sorry. Sorry. I know you don’t want to talk about you and phyllis. I was just saying that there’s enough love and family and friendship to go around. And I hope that ultimately phyllis realizes that I am not going to get her portion and that she can find a way to move forward, because letting all this jealousy and resentment control you, it’s a terrible way to go through life. Jack: [ Sighs ]

Diane: [ Chuckles ] I don’t know what to make of that reaction.

Jack: It’s part relief, part surprise, part appreciation for your candor and insight and perspective.

Diane: Wow. You really packed a lot into that sigh. But don’t worry, I know that you didn’t order a side dish of a diane jenkins therapy session to go along with your ropa vieja. So let’s talk about a much more pressing matter, like what we’re getting for dessert.

Elena: Look, of course I want things to turn out the way that you would want them to.

Nate: Not just for me, but for us. Look, I want chancellor-winters to be a better environment for you, too, now that you’d be working there. And I’m excited to spend more time with you now. Now that I’ll be spending less time trying to convince devon that my ideas make sense. Eventually, I hope lilly won’t even have to intercede anymore. If she can get devon to understand that we are all on the same side, there won’t be any more battles to mediate.

Elena: I mean, yeah, that all sounds great, but… I really think you need to manage your expectations when it comes to devon. He might push back a little harder than you think.

Chelsea: I came up with the best idea last night, and i think you’re gonna love it.

Billy: You know, I can get you a bowl for that.

Chelsea: You know you’re killing my vibe?

Billy: [ Chuckles ] All right. Uh… we don’t even have to be here, actually. We can go to crimson lights. There’s a lot more room, and there’s someone else to clean up your carnage.

And we can riff on the whole true-crime series we were contemplating earlier.

Yeah, and let’s just get these a little organized, huh? File these away.

Chelsea: Okay. This is a file, or a whole filing system? It’s all color-coordinated and tabulated. Do you have a name for this? Like a nerdy name. Like, um, the billy abbott approach? Baa? Like, “baaah,” like a sheep? Get it?

Billy: No, I do get it. I’m not sure it’s funny.

Chelsea: It is funny. When did you become so fastidious, so particular?

Billy: I put this studio together to be free of distractions. So the absence of clutter is actually on purpose.

Chelsea: Okay. Well, I think that crumbs add a little something.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] These are great.

Billy: No, you’re not.

Sally: Do you believe in serendipity, detective?

Chance: Well, in my line of work, we call it a coincidence. And 9 times out of 10, I do not.

Sally: Well, allow this to be your exception, because you were just the man I wanted to see.

Chance: I’m pretty sure last time we spoke, you were helping abby pick out a wedding dress. Now you’re running newman media. Congratulations.

Sally: Thank you. My amazing new job is actually why I wanted to talk with you. My reporters are having a heck of a time wrangling information from our usual sources at the station.

Chance: You don’t say.

Sally: Yeah. So what’s the trick? Tell me. Do they fear you, or do they respect you?

Chance: Oh. Uh… maybe it’s a healthy dose of both.

Sally: Well, it is terribly frustrating, to tell you the truth. When can we expect an official update on this mysterious investigation?

Victor: Chance’s team was able to recover some video footage from the gas station where ashland parked his car.

Nick: You got to be kidding me.

Nikki: What’s on the tape?

Victoria: Did you see it?

Victor: Man got into a car and drove away. That’s all.

Nick: One of your security guys?

Victor: Could’ve been. Quality of the video wasn’t very good.

Nikki: Well, that could’ve been anyone.

Victor: Well, anyone but ashland. Ashland didn’t smoke. This guy had a cigarette.

Victoria: So the police found a cigarette butt at that location. Do you think it could’ve been one of your guys?

Nick: All they have to do is run a dna test.

Victor: Yeah, there’s that possibility.

Nikki: And then it’s just a quick game of connect the dots, and it comes back to us.

Victor: To me.

Nikki: How could someone on your staff be so careless?

Nick: This is exactly what i was worried was gonna happen. So what’s the plan now, dad? What are we supposed to do? As sensodyne scientists

Sally: Because I know that you understand the position

Chance: Yeah. You run a media company. Death of a tycoon seems pretty newsworthy, if you ask me. Not to mention the fact that you are new at this, so might feel like you have something to prove.

Sally: Why, detective, I have the unsettling feeling that I have just been analyzed. You really do know how to read people. And you are very polite for not bringing adam into the conversation, though, of course, he’s another reason why I feel the need to prove to everyone that I’m up for the job. He elevated me to ceo, told me he believed in me. And then…what does he do? He breaks up and walks away in what was one of the most difficult moments I’ve had in a really long time.

Chance: Well, I’m sorry about that. But I, uh, am not all that surprised. You might not feel like it right now, but you are better off. Trust me.

Sally: Well, you’re the latest in a long line of people to tell me that.

Chance: People that tend to get sucked into his orbit, they live to regret it.

Sally: I told myself that we were a good fit, two people with a checkered past who wouldn’t judge each other, and I was gonna be the one who finally made him feel safe and accepted and truly loved. Spoiler alert — didn’t work out that way.

Chance: Yeah, well, adam, he is just really good at letting people down, isn’t he?

Sally: Yeah. Well, I’m aware that it could have been a heck of a lot worse. At least I didn’t have to take a bullet for him before I realized what he was all about.

Chance: Yeah.

Chelsea: How did this happen? The notorious billy abbott is now the buttoned-down guy you bring home to mom.

Billy: I don’t think there’s anything wrong with trying to maintain a professional atmosphere, like not having popcorn on the floor.

Okay. Whatever you say, grandpa. I mean, do you hear yourself? Who are you?

Billy: Oh, lord. Really? I mean, that’s a first — somebody’s complaining that I’m actually a rule follower.

Chelsea: Yeah, kind of off-brand for you, isn’t it?

Billy: Yeah, I would say so, maybe. You give me a line, and I will cross it. You give me a order, I will give you disorder. It’s actually gotten me into some pretty good trouble over the years.

Chelsea: Kind of how things got tricky with victoria back in the day, right?

Billy: I have my regrets, yeah.

Chelsea: And now look how the pendulum just swings in the opposite direction.

Billy: Not quite sure what you mean by that.

Chelsea: Come on. You have to know you’re a little uptight these days.

Billy: Are you saying that i have become boring and predictable? What, since I started dating lily?

Chelsea: Oh, I don’t blame lily. This is all on you.

Victor: There’s nothing for us to do right now but sit back and wait until we find out what evidence chance finds.

Victoria: I think he’s made it pretty clear that he’s going to keep digging until he finds the whole truth.

Nikki: The minute the media find out we’re involved, it will be a nightmare.

Nick: You’re right, mom. We need to get out in front of this.

Victoria: What about the statement that we released previously?

Nick: That’s not gonna cut it. We need to hire a crisis P.R. Firm. We should probably get michael baldwin on this.

Victor: Michael baldwin is busy with other issues, okay? We just have to sit back now. Reserve our options, that’s all. Be patient. Meanwhile, I talked to sally spectra, and I asked her to tamp down the news about ashland’s death.

Nick: When did you do this?

Victor: This morning. Made it pretty clear to her.

Nick: Meaning you went to intimidate her. Dad, when are you gonna get it? You’re not making things better. You’re just making things worse. I’m jonathan lawson

Billy: But if I’m so uptight, then why do you want to work with me?

Chelsea: Because podcast billy is fun. Podcast billy is charming, witty, thoughtful. Oh, and don’t forget irreverent.

Billy: How could I?

Chelsea: Honestly, it’s a relief to know you haven’t lost that side of yourself.

Billy: Well, you know, it’s all about balance. Everything in moderation, right? Because problems happen when i go too far in any one direction.

Chelsea: Well, I get that. But I don’t think you should have to monitor yourself. You don’t want to live like that. You just need to relax, breathe a little.

Billy: I am relaxed.

Chelsea: It doesn’t seem like it.

Billy: How did we get on this topic in the first place?

Chelsea: You know, I think it was the index cards that threw us over the edge. If it makes you uncomfortable we’ll change the subject.

Billy: Yeah, no, that’s a good idea. I can definitely get behind that. Let’s talk about you and your issues now.

Chelsea: I have had plenty of therapy. Bring it on.

Victor: Son, why would you take issue with me talking to sally spectra? Isn’t that what you did earlier when you asked her to turn down the news about ashland’s death?

Nick: I didn’t use coercion. I told her that we would respect the firewall between the owners of newman media and the people making the editorial decisions.

Victor: And you honestly think it was a happy accident that she did exactly what was beneficial to our family? Think again. She knew it was the right thing to do, what would benefit us. Okay? And she bloody well should have.

Nick: She promised me that she was gonna wait until she had more information about that night, and it sounds like it’s gonna be any minute now.

Victoria: What are you saying, nick?

Nick: Just think about it, how it’s gonna look if all these other news outlets are running with the story about how ashland really died and we’ve got nothing.

Victoria: It would look like we’ve suppressed the coverage.

Nikki: Like we have something to hide. It could start a feeding frenzy.

Nick: And it could severely damage newman media’s reputation for journalistic integrity.

Victor: I don’t give a damn how that looks, okay?

Nick: Vic, you know I’m right.

Victoria: Look, I’m not up for this debate. I am so tired of thinking about that hellish night. I just — I need for this to be over.

Nikki: Darling, you need to take a break. Why don’t you go get some air?

Victoria: Fine. I’m gonna go check on the kids. They’re playing outside.

Nick: Let’s just — let’s just take a minute here — okay? — And think about this. It’s not too late to change course.

Victor: Enough! End of discussion.

[ Door opens, closes ]

Sally: When it comes to adam, we actually have a lot in common. We both thought we could reach out to him, help him change his life, and we both got burned.

Chance: What exactly did he tell you about our relationship?

Sally: Well, that you two were buddies back in his vegas card-shark days. Apparently, you were some badass undercover agent at the time.

Chance: Well, something like that.

Sally: But then when you both ended up back in genoa city, you couldn’t deal with the crap he was pulling, and the bromance ended. But you still took a bullet for him. Which is metaphorically how I felt whenever i temporarily lost my self-respect and begged him to admit that he still wanted me, only to get rejected again.

Chance: When you put it that way, I guess we do have some things in common.

Sally: Mm-hmm. I mean, it’d be one thing if we could wash our hands clean of him entirely, but it’s not that simple, is it? I mean, you washed your hands clean of him, but he’s your brother-in-law. And now, strangely enough, because of the investigation, he won’t leave me alone.

Chance: Oh, yeah? Why’s that?

Sally: Well, he’s curious about it. Borderline obsessed. He says that he heard a rumor that victor is involved somehow, and he keeps coming to me, hoping that I can validate these claims, which is just fully ridiculous.

Chance: Well, I wouldn’t say it’s fully ridiculous. You do work at newman tower. People talk.

Sally: Yeah, not the ones who like being gainfully employed. How do you think that would go over? “Hey, boss, here’s your latest sales figures. It’s pretty crazy about your ex dying in that car accident. You don’t suppose your dad had anything to do with that?”

Chance: Still.

Sally: Yeah, and unlike adam, I don’t want to believe that there’s truth to any of the gossip, because victoria has already been through so much. All the newmans have. I believe that they deserve to have their locke era come to an end. Hmm. Your silence speaks volumes. Is that your way of saying things are about to get a lot more difficult?

Chance: Actually, I was thinking it’s about time for me to get out of here. Very nice to see you, miss spectra.

Sally: You too, detective.

Adam: Well, that was interesting.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] How long have you been lurking there?

Adam: Long enough to see you trying to wheedle information out of chance.

Sally: You got me the job, broke up with me so I could keep the job, and now you’re complaining that I’m doing the job?

Adam: Sally, you are the ceo of newman media. You’re not a cub reporter. It’s a good thing, too, since you had no success getting chance to open his mouth.

Sally: Is this fun for you? Giving me a hard time?

Adam: No, that’s not my intention. I’d actually decided the next time I saw you, I was going to agree to your proposition, that I would share my true feelings about our breakup in exchange for what you know about ashland’s death. But after seeing you with chance, I’ve realized that you were bluffing. You have no idea what happened the night locke died.

Sally: You’re wrong. I’m not about to share what nick told me with the detective who’s investigating him.

Adam: [ Breathes deeply ] Look, if we’re still gonna trade secrets, you’re gonna need to be the one who goes first.

Nick: Mom, I said I didn’t want tea.

Nikki: I know, but drink it anyway. We all need to take a moment to calm ourselves. I know I do.

Nick: You’re right. The most important thing is that you keep your stress level under control. And I know I’m just adding to it, but, mom, I’m telling you, the family hasn’t faced something this big in a long time. Dad thinks we can just tough it out and stand our ground, but the fact is —

Nikki: I know. He can go to prison. I’ve thought of nothing else since I learned how involved he is in this.

Nick: Mom, dad will listen to you. Please have a meet with michael and just go over his legal options. Dad says he doesn’t care what people think about him, but he has to think about the company right now. Public perception matters. If we prevent our own media outlets from running this story —

Nikki: Look, nobody is talking about an all-out ban, just some editorial discretion.

Nick: If we’re too heavy-handed about it, it’s gonna look like a blatant cover-up.

Nikki: You seem to think that we should publish people’s worst suspicions before anything chance can find even comes to light. I don’t see how that can be helpful.

Nick: So you’re siding with dad on this?

Victor: Thank you. Ah, my boy.

Noah: Hey, grandpa.

Victor: Join me. So, when is the last time your grandfather bought you drink?

Noah: I am gonna say… it’s been too long. Let’s do it.

Victor: [ Laughs ] Barkeep, a tequila for my grandson. So, have you found an alternate location for your nightclub?

Noah: I think so.

Victor: Glad to hear that. Sorry I couldn’t accommodate you at top of the tower.

Noah: Eh, it’s all good. Uh, there is something I’d like to discuss, though, if you have time.

Victor: Sure.

Noah: The other day, when we were here talking about the club, that was right after ashland died. It wasn’t until afterwards I realized you must have known about it, but… but you didn’t say anything. It’s just been on my mind ever since. What was that about?

Victoria: Nate, hi.

Nate: Hey, it’s been a while.

Victoria: Do you mind if i sit?

Nate: Please.

Victoria: Thank you so much for the voicemail that you left me after the news broke about ashland. That was really kind of you. I’m sorry if I didn’t respond. It’s just difficult to know what to say.

Nate: No, no, I understand. I was just concerned. I know you’ve been through a lot, and I wanted you to know you have friends that are here for you.

Victoria: I’m okay. Mostly.

Nate: But if you need someone to listen while you vent about what a bastard ashland was, I’m your guy.

Victoria: Nate…

Nate: I’m sorry. Was that too harsh?

Victoria: No, don’t be sorry. I actually appreciate your candor. Ashland was a bastard, but i won’t be doing any venting. I’ve decided that I want to move on from that chapter of my life.

Nate: Sometimes that’s easier said than done.

Victoria: Honestly, I am all talked out about ashland. So in the spirit of moving on, how are things going at chancellor-winters?

Nate: They’re good. Real good.

Victoria: Yeah? You’re not regretting the pivot to corporate life?

Nate: It’s not without its challenges, but you can say the same about anything worth doing.

Victoria: Mm. Well… I know that he who shall not be named had his own selfish reasons for wanting to recruit you to newman, but I will always think of you as the one who got away.

Nate: That is the nicest thing I’ve heard all day.

[ Both laugh ]

Victoria: I’m sure you’re very happy where you’re at, working with your cousins.

Nate: You know that thing i said earlier about challenges? It applies to working with family.

Victoria: Oh, yes, well… tell me about it.

Nate: Adam?

Victoria: Yes, I am very glad that’s over. Although working with family members that I love and respect can also be very complicated. My mother. As co-ceo, constantly nagging me for not getting enough rest.

[ Both laugh ]

Nate: That is exactly the issue. They treat you differently than they would any other colleague.

Victoria: Yes. But with every new situation, there are growing pains. We’ll adapt.

Nate: Well, I hope you’re right.

Victoria: Oh, I know I’m right. You have a very bright mind, and you have so much to offer. I’m sure devon and lily realize how lucky they are to have you on board.

Nate: That is very kind of you to say. I certainly hope they feel that way.

Victor: Why would you be upset that we didn’t talk about ashland that day?

Noah: It just seems like the sort of thing that would’ve come up, unless there’s a reason for it not to.

Victor: You’re very intuitive. And your instincts are right.

Noah: Well, I take that to mean something’s coming and something not so good. I’ve had this feeling, and the word “dread” comes to mind.

Victor: Everything will be all right, okay? I know that a lot of my family gets upset about… how I do things, but I want you to know that i only do them to protect my family. Okay?

Noah: I know.

Victor: Now, if you have any problems in the future, you come to me any time.

Noah: Well, what if my problem is I’m worried about you?

Victor: [ Chuckles ] You trust me, right?

Noah: With my life.

[ Glasses clink ]

Nikki: I understand your point about newman media maintaining their integrity, but we don’t have to be the ones to break the story.

Nick: So you want to just wait and see, like dad does.

Nikki: Well, it just makes sense. A-and that way, newman media could be truthful in reporting but not crossing the line into self-incrimination.

Nick: So what you’re saying is, the family intends to exert influence over the nature of the coverage, put pressure on?

Nikki: Well, yes, of course. I don’t think anybody would be surprised or offended that newman media’s coverage of the newman family would be respectful.

Nick: [ Sighs ] I guess I’m the only one who wants to get out in front of this, so we don’t need to discuss it any further. I will go talk to sally, since I’m the one who told her she could do her job as she sees fit. I will now tell her she needs to curtail her coverage of ashland’s death.

Sally: Thank you, adam, for reminding me why it’s best that we are apart.

Adam: Wait. Will you hold on a second?

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: What did I do?

Sally: You’re treating this like it’s a game. Talking about our breakup and the way that you made me feel, I mean, it’s funny to you, apparently. You’re that cruel.

Adam: Sally, you were the one who set the terms of this deal.

Sally: Yes, I did, because i was looking for some scrap of validation from you, and I was willing to use whatever leverage necessary to get it. But I shouldn’t have to beg and barter for you to treat me with basic human decency. So you know what? You’re right. Nick never told me anything about the night that ashland died. I have no insider information whatsoever, which I’m sure is a huge relief to you. Now you don’t have to muster whatever effort it would have taken for you to eke out a few kind words for me. And I’m starting not to give a damn anyway.

Devon: Welcome home.

Lily: Hi.

Devon: Hey, hey.

Devon: Uh, I did, yeah. It’s — it’s too quiet around here without you.

Lily: Aww. So, give me the update. How’s amanda?

Devon: Amanda is all right. She’s in virginia with her mom. She’s right where she needs to be.

Lily: Oh, wow. So you have been alone.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: Have you seen dom?

Devon: Yeah, he spent the night last night.

Lily: Aww. So you have lots of photos and videos to show his favorite aunt.

Devon: I do. I’ll send them to you.

Lily: Okay, great. Well, now that we covered family, let’s talk about work.

Devon: Okay.

Lily: Jeff from P.R. Said that one of our acts have been double booked.

Devon: Yes, that was a, uh — just a misunderstanding between me and nate. But it’s been resolved. It’s fine.

Lily: Is it?

Devon: Yeah, it wasn’t at first, but it is now.

Lily: Okay. What happened?

Devon: Uh, nate just went ahead and made a decision without getting approval from me first, and then he got a little sensitive when I called him out about it. I think he’s just struggling with not being the head guy in charge like he was at memorial and having people report to him.

Lily: Well, yeah, I mean, i could see that being an adjustment.

Devon: Yeah, me too. And I even suggested that he needs a mentor, whether he wants to admit it or not.

Lily: So what I’m hearing is that you feel like he’s resistant to your feedback?

Devon: Oh, no, it’s much worse than that. He got completely angry and offended and said that I was micromanaging and had the nerve to accuse me of being threatened by him.

Adam: Hey, chance.

Chance: Hey.

Adam: Guess you’re going back to the kitchen to see abby? So, uh, I won’t keep you long.

Chance: Oh, no, she’s not here. I’m actually just picking up some takeout. I don’t have a lot of time, man, so if you’re still trying to join forces to investigate your father, the answer’s still no.

Adam: Oh, that’s too bad. But then again, you, uh, can’t stop me from going solo.

Chance: Take my advice. Let it go. I’ve heard you’ve been badgering people, trying to implicate your dad. Stop.

Adam: You mean sally? You know, I saw the two of you talking earlier. And that’s another instance where you might have better luck if we were working together, chance. Okay? She doesn’t want to talk to me anymore, but I know what makes her tick. And I can help you win her trust. And I can find out what, if anything, she knows. What do you say?

[ Keys clacking ]

Victor: Whoa! That’s what I like to see. My daughter hard at work for the company.

Victoria: You will be pleased to know that we’ve beat revenue predictions for this quarter.

Victor: I’m not here to talk about business, you know. I’m here because, last time we spoke, you were upset.

Victoria: I appreciate that. And I tell you, I feel much calmer after seeing the kids. We can get through this. We survived ashland. I think we can get through anything.

Victor: I am very glad to hear you say that. All right? Hope your brother feels the same.

Victoria: Dad, I’m worried about nicholas. He has been busy dealing with everything that’s happened since that night. He has not had time to process what he — what he’s done for me. He’s so worried about me, and now he’s terrified about what will happen to you and mom if you’re arrested.

Victor: It’s not gonna happen.

Victoria: Well, you didn’t think that chance would find evidence to contradict your story, but he did.

Victor: Wait a minute. Have you seen me dragged downtown to be interrogated?

Victoria: No, daddy, my point is, is that nicholas has a lot on his shoulders. I mean, he’s inherited your protective nature. He wants to fix things, but i don’t think there’s much that he can do in this situation.

Victor: Your brother needs to learn is just to relax. You know, sometimes it’s best to do nothing. Just be patient, that’s all.

Victoria: Yes. Well, that’s never been his strength, has it?

Sally: Did we have a meeting scheduled?

Nick: No, but we need to talk about how newman media is going to handle ashland’s death. It is possible… actually quite probable that more information will be coming out very soon.

Sally: This is making you sick, isn’t it?

Nick: I don’t want to get into details, but suffice it to say, it is not gonna be pretty. My entire family could be dragged through the mud. Now I know I told you it was completely up to you how much attention you gave to this story.

Sally: Let me ease your mind. Newman media is not touching this story. (Vo) red lobster’s seafood summerfest is fire!

Lily: Look, we really have to resolve this tension because we’re family.

Devon: Believe me, I know that. But I kind of feel like that’s half the problem, because i don’t think nate would be reacting the way he’s been if his boss wasn’t his cousin.

Lily: I mean, are you not overstating things? A double booking could be a very simple mistake.

Devon: This is the second time that nate has just taken the initiative on his own, which is a nice way of saying that he’s making moves, and he’s — he’s pulling triggers without getting my approval first.

Lily: So you feel like he’s not showing you enough respect?

Devon: It’s me, the company, our artists. It’S…

Lily: I mean, I think this is mainly about you.

Devon: And why would you say that? Do you think that I’m threatened by him?

Lily: No, it hadn’t even crossed my mind.

Devon: ‘Cause this isn’t about me, and I’m not trying to make it personal or anything like that. I actually think that nate has great ideas half the time. He just has very little business experience, and I wish I would have taken that into more consideration before I went along with your idea to hire him and hand him all this responsibility.

Lily: Okay. Well, we will figure this out. Don’t worry.

Devon: We have to figure this out because things can’t keep going on like this.

Nick: I assume you’re backing away from this story because of my father’s visit? Heard he came to see you, or, more accurately, to pressure you.

Sally: Mm. What he lacks in subtlety, he… really, really lacks. But that is not the reason I’m backing away from this story.

Nick: Sally, you just don’t strike me as the kind of person who intimidates easily.

Sally: I am not doing it because I am fed up with people who pry into everyone’s personal lives, who mine them for every bit of gossip and innuendo so they can exploit them for their own personal gain. It’s disgusting and sensationalist, and I don’t want any part of it.

Nick: While I appreciate that attitude — greatly — this is a media company. There are times you’re going to have to publish stories that some people may view as an invasion of privacy.

Sally: Yes, obviously, if this breaking news is as monumental as you claim that it is, we will absolutely cover it. But I can assure you that it’s not going to be in the headlines day after day. We’re going to publish the facts and move on.

Nick: Are you prepared for some harsh criticism for that approach?

Sally: Oh, god. Criticism? I — I don’t know. It’s gonna be a totally new experience for me.

Nick: This is not how i expected this conversation to go.

Sally: What were you expecting?

Nick: I was expecting some pushback. But you seem to be on the same page as the family, which is very cool.

Sally: Well, it shouldn’t be a surprise. We’re all on the same team. And yes, obviously, I want to do a good job and make a name for myself, but not at your family’s expense. Ashland has already taken so much from you. Enough is enough.

Chance: You’re a real piece of work. You know that?

Adam: I’ve been called worse.

Chance: You know what, adam? We will not be collaborating on this or any investigation. Is that clear? And you know what else? I think it’s pretty damn lousy of you to break up with sally and then turn around and try to manipulate her for information.

Adam: I didn’t realize the two of you knew each other, chance.

Chance: I don’T. But she was pretty forthcoming when we spoke earlier.

Adam: Well, she must have made quite the impression if you are sitting here, outraged on her behalf.

Chance: I’m not naive. I know she was working me for information. But you know what? Everything she said about you was obviously sincere. Now, I don’t know why the hell she did, but that woman cared about you.

Adam: She is recovering quite well.

Chance: That is not an excuse for the way you treated her, adam.

Adam: Look, relationships end, okay? We can’t all have what you and abby have. Quite frankly, I’m probably not cut out for a lifetime commitment.

Chance: Man, look at you. Just wallowing in your character flaws. Adam the heartbreaker. Adam the black sheep.

Adam: No, no, I think I’m being realistic about who I am.

Chance: I know you’re not gonna listen to me, but I’m gonna say it anyways. Get a life. Find a new path, a better direction. Because all I see when I see you is you just falling into old habits.

Adam: Yeah, well, I’m sorry to hear —

Chance: And it pisses me off, man. Because you had it in you to be so much better than this. I thought if you wouldn’t do it for yourself, you’d at least do it for your son.

Adam: Well, you are mistaken, chance. This is as good as I get.

Nick: I mean, it’s like chance and I are playing this dangerous game of cat and mouse.

Nikki: Well, his real prey is your father.

Nick: Well, vick and I are stonewalling him. That doesn’t feel great, either. Chance is family. He’s a good guy. He’s got a lot of integrity. And we’re looking him in the eye and lying to his face about what we know.

Nikki: Alright, look, what victor did does not change the truth of what happened that night. Ashland was out of control. You were just trying to protect your sister. You didn’t do anything wrong.

Nick: I had nothing to hide until dad took matters into his own hands. I mean, he won’t even talk about my concerns about where this is possibly heading.

Nikki: Well, he is confident that the police will not be able to find anything that proves that the accident was staged.

Nick: It’s not that simple, mom. Now we’re all complicit. And the longer this drags out, I’m telling you, it could potentially harm the two things that dad cares most about — this family and the company. I can understand why dad did what he did, but he wasn’t there. He has no idea what went down with me and vick and ashland.

Nikki: Well, that’s true. He wasn’T.

Nick: He sees this dead body, he can only guess how he dies. For him to jump to this elaborate hoax, this cover-up, without talking to us first, is a huge mistake. And I’m telling you, dad is gonna get hurt by this.

Victor: I will not have that discussion with you again.

Kevin: Thanks for meeting up.

Chance: What’s up?

Kevin: It’s about ashland’s car wreck. I’m trying to prove your theory it was staged by victor’s security team with the man’s corpse inside.

Chance: Well, the evidence we have is circumstantial.

Kevin: I’ve got something new to show you. It’s a game changer.

Mariah: Hey! [ Laughs ]

Sharon: Hey. Oh, my god. Did you guys buy out every store in genoa city?

Faith: Yeah, and the outlet mall and lake geneva.

[ Both laugh ] All essentials, though.

Sharon: But your dorm room is so small.

Mariah: Oh, never fear. We will make it work. Although we might need the help of an engineering major.

Tessa: Just kidding. I can talk…just a little.

Phyllis: Ah, that was incredible. I love everything I ate.

Phyllis: Mmm!

Summer: Plus, we got a ton accomplished.

Phyllis: Great. I’m so glad this day is finally here.

Summer: Me, too.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for bringing me up to speed on everything. I intend to make an impact right out of the gate.

Summer: As I was saying, mom, I want you to succeed, which is why I’m going to remind you of the single most important policy on which your future at marchetti depends. Stay away from diane.

Diane: Wow, harrison, that’s beautiful!

Jack: Great skyscraper!

Diane: No, no, it’s a — it’s a castle. Can’t you tell?

Jack: Castle. It’s a beautiful castle! I stand corrected.

Diane: You brought enough toys for our grandson to build an entire kingdom.

Jack: That’s so he can do whatever he wants to do here.

Diane: Yeah, I think at this age, it’s important to encourage creative play. Notice how he’s having so much fun with the sand and the sticks and the leaves. But you can get a good workout in getting all those toys back to your car.

Jack: Yeah, I guess I can. What’s — what’s he got now? I’m gonna go check this out.

Diane: Yeah, I’ll just — I’ll just wait here.

Victoria: I’m so sorry that I’ve been so overwhelmed the times that you’ve called and that I wasn’t there when you dropped by the ranch.

Abby: Stop. There’s no need to apologize. I just — I wanted to see you in person and make sure that you’re really okay.

Victoria: I’m — I’m hanging in. Well, now that the kids are home for what’s left of summer, I’ve just been focused on them. And school is gonna be starting soon, so…

Abby: Victoria, stop. Look, I know that you’re putting your kids’ well-being and needs first and you have all of that handled. I want to know how — how you’re doing.

Victoria: With ashland gone, I feel like I can — I can breathe again and that I’m not waiting to see what new lie will surface and what he’ll contrive to cover that lie and how he’ll retaliate against me or my loved ones. And I’ve had that hanging over my head for a long time. If there were any decency in that man, I might have mourned the fact that he did not have a shot at redemption, but there wasn’t any, so I am not gonna shed any more tears over him. Most of all, I am just really happy to feel safe again.

Abby: I’m so sorry. After everything that he put you through…

Victoria: You know, don’t you, what else happened that night?

Kevin: I was able to recover and rebuild the missing security footage from the gas station near victoria’s property.

Chance: And that’s ashland’s rental car.

Kevin: Yeah, no question. The plates match. And…wait for it. There.

Chance: Someone’s getting behind the wheel. Ohh, it’s too dark. I can’t make out his face. Can you enhance this at all?

Kevin: That’s as good as i can get it, as good as anyone can get it. But even at this resolution, one thing is clear since the guy in the video is smoking a cigarette.

Chance: That’s not ashland.

Victor: Son, why are you burdening your mother with this? She has been under a lot of stress. I’ve told you and victoria i have everything under control, alright? Time to let it go.

Nick: Dad, what you fail to realize, or will at least acknowledge —

[ Cellphone chimes ] Excuse me. Another issue with the reilly deal. It’s all part of the ashland fallout. I got to deal with this right now. Sorry. This is nick newman. Yeah. No. No, marc, you’re not changing the terms of the deal this late in the game. That’s not happening. If there are any further delays while newman legal is preparing for action for breach of contract and commensurate losses, I’ll have the P.R. People document in great detail the bad-faith negotiation and put it out there for public consumption. Oh, you’re damn right I will. Good. I’m glad we finally understand one another. Bye.

Victor: Well, son, I’m impressed. You’re focusing on business while dealing with a family crisis. That’s what the newmans do, you know.

Nick: Thanks.

Victor: I think this was a good time for you to come back to the family business. You’ve grown a lot, and I hope that you will not allow your usual self-righteous indignation to interfere with anything in the future.

Nick: [ Scoffs ] Ughh!

Chance: Okay, now we have confirmation that ashland’s car was definitely at that gas station, as well as someone who tosses a cigarette, covers his tracks, gets in the car, someone that’s definitely not locke.

Kevin: And we know that one of victor’s bodyguards is a smoker. Told you it was a game changer.

Chance: Well, let’s see if it’s enough.

Kevin: Yeah.

Mariah: This is the best news. I mean, your recovery is right on track. I’m so thrilled for you, honey.

Tessa: You and me both.

Faith: Did you cry when the doctor told you how well you were doing? I totally would have.

Sharon: I imagine you were probably feeling a lot of different things at once.

Tessa: Bingo.

Mariah: Well, your timing is impeccable because I not only get to hear your voice, but i get to say goodbye before I go to jabot.

Faith: You’re going back to the office now?

Mariah: Yeah. Uh, don’t look so sad because all those stores that we cleared out — they’re gonna restock. And then you and I will face a new challenge.

Faith: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: Meanwhile, I am going to ask you two to look after my lovely wife. I will be texting relentlessly for updates until I get home tonight.

Sharon: We will take excellent care of her. I promise.

Faith: Plus, I get to show her all the cool things I found to decorate my dorm room.

Sharon: You know, I think it’s a wise decision to stop working remotely right now and just go back to being the marketing maven you are.

Mariah: Yeah, yeah, a lot more. I mean, ever since jabot decided to take on marchetti, the in-house team is gonna be doing P.R. For them, as well — so, along with the new hires, including diane jenkins.

Sharon: Really? I thought she was an architect.

Mariah: In a former life. No pun intended. Yeah, it’s strange to be getting e-mails on public perception and social engagement from kyle’s mom.

Faith: That’s got to be so weird. I always heard his mom was dead — and all of these rumors about diane and grandma that no one seems to want to talk about. And now she’s working for you?

Mariah: I mean, she’s doing a good job so far. She’s a hard worker and a quick study, and she’s on her best behavior. But, yeah, it’s weird. There’s no argument there.

Diane: To answer your question, I’m just happy. And it’s thanks to you for letting me back in and giving me a chance to have a relationship with harrison.

Kyle: I see.

Jack: Construction emergency averted.

Diane: Oh, good.

Jack: Hey, kyle.

Kyle: Hello, dad.

Jack: So, what did I miss?

Diane: Oh, not a thing. Kyle just got here.

Kyle: I know this should be a normal thing, seeing harrison’s grandparents watch him together, but it still takes some getting used to.

Jack: Yeah, you’re not wrong.

Kyle: Hey, it looks like linda just got here.

Diane: Oh, good. She can help harrison finish building his castle.

Jack: Uh, skyscraper. It’s kind of morphed a little bit.

Diane: Oh. So it has.

Kyle: Well, uh, we should head back to the office. You ready?

Diane: Oh, yeah, of course.

Jack: You know what? I’m gonna say goodbye to harrison and then of course get my exercise hauling all of his toys back to my car. Um, I have one other thing to do before I get to work. So, uh, you two have a nice rest of your day.

Diane: You too, jack.

Phyllis: Okay, look. Summer, I’ll tell you for the 10th time, hopefully the last time. I intend to give diane a wide berth, okay? Unless I have to work with her, and in that case, I’ll be highly professional. This is a huge opportunity for me. I know that. And I plan to make this a very, very successful, long-lasting endeavor.

Summer: Good.

Phyllis: Thank you. Good, too. It’s mother and daughter working together. We’re gonna bring marchetti to new heights in fashion and sophisticated home decor, and I’m not gonna let any back-from-the-dead zombie trash ruin that for me.

Summer: I’m glad to hear that.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. And it’s not lip service. Okay? You and kyle have nothing to worry about.

Nothing to worry about. I’m gonna act like diane isn’t even there. Hey, it’s me…your skin.

Tessa: You sure you can’t go early tomorrow?

Mariah: Earlier today, you were begging me to go to work.

Tessa: [ Sighs ] I get it.

Mariah: It’s just, I have so much on my plate right now. It’s insane.

[ Both chuckle ] But seriously, you should take this time to think about summer and kyle’s offer, which is a great opportunity, even if i helped it along just a little bit. Okay. A lot. But do you know why? It’s because I love you a lot and I believe in you, tessa, and I know how hard everything has been with the surgery and the recovery, but you’re already in the next phase. And we’re gonna handle this like we handle everything — together. Including that ice cream my mom stocked in the freezer. So, if you wouldn’t mind leaving me just, like, a bite or two.

Mariah: Mm.

Faith: Guilty as charged. I realized that I’m not gonna have you around to get on my case and clean up after me, so it’s time.

Tessa: Ah! Our little girl’s growing up.

Sharon: I know. It’s so beautiful. Have I told you lately —

Faith: You’re proud of me.

Sharon: Yes — like you wouldn’t believe.

Tessa: You okay?

Sharon: Yeah. I’m really excited for faith. You know, it’s a little sad to have her leaving the nest. It’s gonna be pretty quiet around the house. It’ll take some getting used to. How about you? How are you doing?

Tessa: I’m scared. What if I don’t recover? What if I’m never gonna sing again?

Abby: Don’t mean to pry. We don’t have to talk about this.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] You know, actually, you’re the one who’s in the awkward position, married to the cop that is investigating ashland’s death.

[ Breathes deeply ] But I am really grateful that i can speak openly with you.

Abby: You know that you can tell me anything, right?

Victoria: Ashland came by the house that night wanting to talk. I was alone, and he caught me off guard. But I thought that I could have a rational conversation with him and let him know that there was absolutely no future for us. But ashland was not being rational at all. In fact, he — [Sighs] He got more and more furious, and he said some really awful things. And he let me know that there was only one way that I could be done with him.

Abby: Oh, my god.

Victoria: If nicholas hadn’t shown up when he did, I… you know, I really believe that nicholas saved my life.

Abby: [ Sighs ] What happened after he arrived?

Victoria: Nicholas tried to defuse the situation, but ashland just got more and more aggressive and he came after me. He tried to corner me. And nicholas intervened. They got into it, and nicholas punched ashland. And he fell. He hit his head. And then he wasn’t moving. And there was no pulse. Oh, god, there was so much blood. It was just terrible. It was just — it was a nightmare.

[ Breathes deeply ] So I called chance, and nicholas went outside. I went with him. I think that, honestly, we were both in shock. But then when we came back inside, ashland was gone. I don’t know, abby. Somehow he just managed to get up and leave. Then the police — they did a search for ashland, and they found him. They found him, and they discovered that he had lost control of his car and he died. As relieved as I am that ashland is no longer a threat, this still isn’t over. Can you please, please help me understand why chance cannot just put a stop to this investigation? What does he hope to get out of it?

Chance: Victor.

Victor: Chance. You’re becoming a regular around here. What can I do for you?

Chance: There’s something I’d like you to take a look at.

Victor: Alright.

Chance: Now, the security surveillance at the gas station was blank at key points the night ashland died. Our tech team was able to recover and reconstruct some of that missing footage.

Victor: So, what am i supposed to see?

Chance: That is ashland’s rental vehicle. The plates are visible. And the man getting into the car…

Victor: You mean the one whose face isn’t visible, right?

Chance: Anything look familiar about him?

Victor: Mnh-mnh.

Chance: No?

Victor: Mnh-mnh.

Chance: Well, it’s not ashland. Watch. As you can see, he crushes a cigarette butt, and then he literally covers his tracks before he hops in that car.

Victor: Yeah, well…

Chance: Now, I have that cigarette butt, as you know. We’re getting it checked for dna. Same brand your security guard smokes.

Victor: Hmm. Well, now, you know that I’ve had my security team watching victoria’s house for weeks now, okay? And I’m sure they’ve frequented that gas station. I’m sure one of them probably smoked a damn cigarette and put it out, you know, on his heel, right?

Chance: Well, it hadn’t been there for long.

Victor: So, chance, what do you want me to say? What is it you want to hear? Today, my friend, you did it…you did it…

Victor: Now, listen. I appreciate that you take your job seriously. You’re a good cop. But what is this all about? You’re wasting your time.

Chance: Uncovering the truth is never a waste of time, victor.

Victor: Mm-hmm. So, let’s assume your cockamamie hypothesis is correct, okay? Let’s assume that I sent my security team into that house to pick up ashland locke’s body, put it into his car, and have them stage an accident in the ravine, giving the impression that ashland locke died by himself. And let’s assume that I did that to protect my son and my daughter from the impression that they weren’t innocent in this. Am I about right?

Chance: You are.

Victor: Now, your wife, abby, faced a similar situation before dominic was born, you know, when you were off overseas doing your duty instead of being with your family.

Chance: That’s completely irrelevant, and I had no choice, victor. You know that.

Victor: No, it isn’T. It isn’T. What if your wife would have killed stitch to protect her own life and protect your unborn child? What if I had stepped in and seen to it that the whole thing was covered up in order to protect your wife? Would you have done then?

Abby: I want you to know that chance hates having to keep looking into this accident, hates that it’s keeping you from getting the closure that you need, that we all want you to have. I just — I really hope that this is all over very soon.

Victoria: I appreciate that. And I know that you came by here to find out how I’m dealing with all of this, and now I guess you can see how things really are. Even with ashland gone, it feels like he’s trapped us and that he’s somehow still controlling us.

[ Sighs ]

Abby: I am so sorry.

Victoria: Look, I understand that chance has to be thorough, but nicholas and I told him everything that happened that night. We were honest with him. We’re not trying to hide anything. We just all want this horrific experience to be behind us… something that maybe you can help your husband understand.

Sharon: It’s totally normal that you’d be scared of losing your voice. You’ve worked this hard. You’ve come this far in your career. You’ve recently released a beautiful album. Of course you’re gonna wonder what this surgery is gonna mean for your future. But maybe you could invite in some other ideas, allow yourself to explore some other things?

Tessa: Well, mariah approached kyle about me doing some modeling without asking me first.

Sharon: And?

Tessa: Summer and kyle want me to be the new face of marchetti.

Sharon: A spokesmodel? Well, the official term for that now is brand ambassador. I used to do that for jabot back in the day.

Tessa: No kidding?

Sharon: Yeah. It was the most fun and exciting and rewarding part of my career. Gosh, I’m really happy for you, that you could be taking on this new role.

Tessa: It sounds like a dream job…for someone.

Sharon: But not you? Why is that? Why do you seem so ambivalent?

Tessa: I’m worried it’s a sympathy job…for if I never sing again.

Sharon: Okay. Listen to me. Mariah may have been motivated by a desire to give you something else to focus on while you’re recovering. But kyle and summer — there’s no way that they would have offered you this important, high-level job because they feel sorry for you. Trust me. This is big business. These are high stakes. If they didn’t think that you had the right look, they would have never approached you.

Tessa: I see your point.

Sharon: And I imagine your fans bring a very desirable demographic to marchetti. Trust me — kyle and summer were not just acting strictly out of the goodness of their hearts.

Tessa: Yeah, I-I guess it’s not the mailroom.

Sharon: No, it’s definitely not. And since you brought it up, let’s talk about the flip side, all of the benefits that this could bring to your already existing music career. Suddenly, you will be the face of a well-known, high-end designer with a lot of cachet.

Tessa: Mm.

Sharon: That’s gonna bring a lot more people to your concerts, a lot more downloads, more album sales. This is actually kind of brilliant.

Tessa: There’s a reason they gave mariah that promotion.

Sharon: And think about who you’ll be working for.

Tessa: The person who officiated our wedding, a friend and supporter.

Sharon: And mariah and summer. Can’t think of a more appealing set of teammates, can you?

Tessa: I mean, when you put it like that, I would be an idiot to turn this down.

Kyle: What?

Diane: Harrison scored three goals in his first match. Pee wee soccer may never be the same.

Kyle: Wha– hi. Uh, how’s it going?

Summer: Good. We’re just in the middle of my mom’s orientation.

Kyle: That’s right. Today is your first official day.

Phyllis: Yes.

Kyle: Welcome aboard.

Phyllis: Thank you. I’m very excited.

Kyle: Can’t wait to hear what you have in mind for marchetti home.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m gonna dazzle you with my ideas. And I look forward to working with you, diane, when the — when the time arises, right?

Diane: Likewise. Otherwise, as agreed, I promise to steer clear of phyllis.

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: Hey! What’s going on?

Summer: Hey. Um, it’s just my mom’s first day at marchetti. Who says you have to spend more on skincare to get results?

Phyllis: Well, I’ll be heading up marchetti’s home division.

Mariah: Oh, yeah, I know. Uh, kyle told me. I just didn’t know you’d be starting, like, now.

[ Chuckles ] Or that you’d be working with all of us so closely.

Phyllis: Well, I wanted a new challenge. I mean, the hotel — that — that was done. And I’m really excited to be working so closely with my brilliant, brilliant daughter.

Mariah: Well, congratulations on the gig.

Phyllis: Thank you.

Kyle: We’re expecting phyllis to do great things here.

Summer: Well, she better, for what we’re paying her.

[ Laughter ]

Diane: Well, I’m with you, mariah, in wishing my colleague phyllis all the best. I hope this position is everything you’re hoping for.

Phyllis: Oh, I have every intention of making it that way.

Mariah: Wow, it’s — it’s gonna be like one big, happy family.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm.

Diane: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Uh, diane, uh, did you want to meet with me, like, now?

Diane: Yes. Now is perfect.

Mariah: Great. Awesome. Let’s — let’s do that.

[ Chuckles ]

Phyllis: Well, wow. Look at this. Everything’s falling into place. It’s gonna be great.

Tessa: It really helped talking things through. You’re the best mother-in-law ever.

Sharon: Anytime.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Tessa: Uh… it’s mariah making sure I’m not talking too much.

Sharon: Oh, okay. Well, why don’t you go upstairs and rest for a little while? Have some more of that pomegranate ice cream.

Tessa: I think I can do that.

[ Chuckles ]

Sharon: I’ll see you in a bit.

Tessa: Okay. Bye.

Nikki: Hey.

Sharon: Oh. Hey. How are you two doing?

Nikki: Uh, I’ll be better once I get one of your wonderful lattes.

Nick: Yeah. Make it two.

Sharon: Okay. I’m gonna go get those.

Nikki: How much does she know?

Nick: All of it.

Nikki: Nicholas, why are you talking about family business with outsiders?

Nick: Look, I trust her. And I needed somebody on the outside to talk about this. We’re all so focused on dad’s actions that something’s gotten lost. I was responsible for a man’s death. It’s a lot to carry around, mom.

Chance: I come here with facts and a body of growing evidence, and you want to throw a hypothetical at me? Really?

Victor: You didn’t answer my question. What would you have done?

Chance: I’m not gonna answer it because it is irrelevant. You’re talking about something that didn’t happen. I’m talking about something that did.

[ Scoffs ] I mean, you know what? You keep asking me why I am pursuing this so hard. You know why? Because this is a job that i took an oath to do. That’s not something I can just switch off because it’s inconvenient or it raises difficult questions. No. You know what? You need to have more trust in the legal system and in me.

Victor: And you need to develop a greater sense for family and be there when they need you, not when it’s convenient for you. Now, next time, chance old boy, don’t point your finger at your father-in-law. You have a good day now. And give my love to my daughter.

Chance: Goodbye, victor.

Victor: [ Breathing deeply ]

Nikki: Darling, you did nothing wrong. You acted in self-defense.

Nick: Which I freely admitted to chance when he showed up that night. I can’t completely process everything that’s happened, and I can’t begin to work my way to the other side of this because of what dad did. He made us all accessories to his crime. And for what?

[ Cellphones ping ]

Nikki: Your father wants to meet all of us at the ranch.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Okay. Ooh! It’s official. I am a marchetti employee. Oh, my gosh.

Summer: Congratulations.

Phyllis: Thank you. Okay, where are these new digs that you keep on telling me about, my office?

Kyle: Uh, before you two head out, I just want to thank you for the effort you’ve been making with my mom so far.

Phyllis: Aww, you’re welcome. I mean, truly, it is my pleasure.

Kyle: I know we’re right at the beginning of this and we’ll need some time to find our footing.

Phyllis: Well, that goes without saying.

Kyle: Like you said, i believe we can make this work.

Phyllis: Yeah, I do, too. I mean, it’s very clear in my mind what I plan to accomplish here.

Kyle: That’s great.

Phyllis: Mm.

Kyle: I have a meeting to get to. So, if you’ll excuse me…

Summer: Oh, kyle, wait. Um, I just remembered I need to talk to you about something budget-related. Mom, I’ll be right back.

Phyllis: Alright.

Chelsea: Billy, hey, got a second?

Billy: Yeah. What’s going on?

Chelsea: I thought we could go over some podcast ideas.

Billy: Sure. I’m actually just going over notes for the next episode.

Chelsea: Oh, I thought you were doing some corporate stuff. You look all business-y and official sitting behind the ceo desk.

Billy: It’s funny you should say that. Lily is actually still in los angeles, so I’m using her desk. But you did pick up on it because I am feeling like a little bit of a suit back here.

Chelsea: Mm. You have a different energy in this room. Different posture, even.

Billy: You know me. I have to wear a lot of hats. You know, I’ve got my corporate chapeau, I’ve got my hipster hosting beanie, and, of course, my favorite, the dunce cap.

Chelsea: Ah, right, so when i saw you at the soccer field the other day, what kind of hat were you wearing then?

Billy: That would be my number-one-dad truck hat, of course.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] Um… so when are we going to get the boys together for the playdate?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah, it’s just not a good time right now. Both of our kids just got back from camp, as well.

Chelsea: When would it be a good time?

Billy: I will talk to johnny’s his mother and check in with her and see what she thinks.

Chelsea: Okay. When can you ask her?

Billy: Well, she’s got a lot going on right now. When she has the bandwidth to have this conversation, I’ll have it with her.

Chelsea: Billy, it’s a play date. It’s going to take you two seconds to ask her.

Billy: Chelsea, it’s a little more complicated than that.

Chelsea: Why? The boys know each other.

Billy: Yeah, and they haven’t hung out together for a while.

Chelsea: So what? They get along great.

Billy: Okay, I don’t know if I’m missing something here, but it feels like you’re being a little pushy, and I’m not sure why the urgency.

Chelsea: Billy, you are never going to change your stance towards me when it comes to johnny, are you?

Elena: I just think it’s weird it’s taking so long.

Nate: To get the check?

[ Chuckles ] Just finish your quiche. Give them a minute.

Elena: I’m not talking about the check. I’m still talking about my contract at newman.

Nate: I know you’re frustrated about that, but that takes time, too. Imani’s working on it.

Elena: I’m not frustrated. I’m just saying it’s taking forever.

Nate: You know what? I bet we can take care of that right now. Sally, excuse me, do you have a minute?

Sally: Yep. Doctor. Doctor turned coo. What’s going on?

Elena: Well, I mean, there’s something we’d like to discuss with you.

Sally: Sounds serious. What’s up?

Nate: We’d like to negotiate elena’s departure from askmdnow. I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reschedule the meeting, but the heads of our legal team at chancellor-winters have been dealing with a family emergency.

Sally: Really sorry to hear that, but I’m just a little bit confused. You said reschedule, only I don’t remember a meeting being set.

Nate: The dinner imani arranged to sit down and settle this matter.

Elena: Yeah, nate was told you had to postpone.

Sally: Doesn’t ring a bell.

Nate: It was going to be you, imani, and me, but you had something come up at the last minute.

Sally: No, I don’t remember that.

Nate: Hm.

Summer: Why are you being so mysterious?

Kyle: I’m not. I’m an open book.

Summer: Mm, no. You’re hinting at something, and you’re deliberately not telling me what it is. You’re like one of those diaries I had when I was a kid with little lock on it.

Kyle: And we all know how impenetrable those locks are, so you’re never getting the info you want out of me.

Summer: Just tell me. I’m sure it has something to do with my mom and diane both working at marchetti. What happened? Did they get into a brawl before my mom’s even had her first day at the office?

Kyle: Not that I know of, but I have a great idea for marchetti.

Summer: I like the sound of that.

Kyle: Best of all, it has nothing to do with our mothers’ feud, and it can actually help people I care about.

Mariah: Alright, honey. Tea with lemon. Not too hot. You know, there’s an infinite number of things that I don’t understand about this universe, but I know how to prepare your tea. I’ve got that down cold.

[ Chuckles ] You know, it’s a beautiful day. You know, maybe we could make some sandwiches, do a picnic by the lake.

Voice app: You are being so sweet. Thanks. But I don’t want you to ignoble.

Mariah: Ignoble? I don’t know what that means.

Voice app: Ignore.

Mariah: Right, but what does ignoble mean?

Voice app: Ignore.

Mariah: I understand. What am I not supposed to ignore? “Go to work.” Well, I’ve got everything taken care of a jabot, you know, and right here is where I need to be. If I go to work, who’s going to entertain you, spend time with you, make your tea? There are times, I wonder…

[ Chuckles ] So you’re sure everything’s fine? Okay? It’s perfect? Nothing could be better? Okay, sure. I believe that. You know, canceling all those concerts wasn’t frustrating at all. You know, not being able to sing the songs to your adoring fans. And the best part is you get to listen to me all day and never be able to respond.

Mariah: A dream? That’s what this is?

[ Sighs ] Babe, the connection we have, it’s no joke. You know, it’s like a sixth sense. A seventh sense. [ Chuckles ] We can practically feel what the other is going through, right? Like, for example, when I was abducted by that maniac stitch and he locked me in that little room when I was pregnant, you could tell that I was scared and in danger, right? So it’s pretty pointless trying to keep things from me because everything that you’re going through, I feel it, you know, like it’s happening to me. And speaking from experience, keeping things in, that’s not the way to go. It just grows, and it gives it power. Don’t do that. Whatever you’re feeling, I want to help you carry it.

Kyle: So, I was talking to mariah about tessa’s predicament.

Summer: Yeah, she can’t speak or sing since the surgery.

Kyle: She’s going to need extensive voice therapy to recover, so her career is on hold for the foreseeable future.

Summer: She must be so scared.

Kyle: Well, I’m sure she is, but it’s tessa, so she’ll tough it out and never let us know how frightened she is.

Summer: That’s how I would be, too.

Kyle: [ Chuckling ] No, you wouldn’T. Like, I love you, but you’re not the tough, stoic type.

Summer: I’m going to prove you wrong about that someday. What was this great idea?

Kyle: Mariah was looking for something else for tessa to focus on. She pitched an idea that would direct tessa’s energy into something productive and give marchetti a new face for the new line.

Summer: You’re talking about hiring tessa as a model.

Kyle: For the print campaign. Her fan base is growing. It’s the exact demographic we’re looking for. Tessa has the look I think we want, and best of all, she loves our product.

Summer: Hm. I mean, I love that photo of her on her new album. I mean, it’s stunning.

Kyle: The camera loves her.

Summer: I like the idea. I’m not thrilled that mariah is the one that brought it to you. That means that she’s going to be involved, which always turns into a whole thing.

Kyle: She will be on her best behavior.

Summer: That’s what we’ve been saying about our mothers, and they’re going to require a lot of managing. I don’t want me and mariah to be another source of potential conflict.

Kyle: Hey, mariah is genuinely happy for us and you’re happy for her and tessa.

Summer: We’ve reached sort of a peaceful coexistence, but that’s only because of your friendship.

Kyle: Maybe, but she’s changed, like when she gives you a hard time now, it doesn’t really have any animosity to it. Like, I mean, like, at the winning. She was legitimately happy you were there.

Summer: Babe, she called me “snowflake” for years.

Kyle: It was in fun — mostly. But, look, mariah has her hands full at jabot, so she won’t have time to play show-biz wife to tessa. Look past all the mariah stuff. Won’t it be awesome for tessa to be the face of marchetti?

Billy: No, I am not trying to prevent you from seeing johnny. It is a tricky time.

Chelsea: Right. Back from camp, you said.

Billy: Well, it’s not only that. My kids had a relationship with ashland locke. And now they are dealing with his death.

Chelsea: All the more reason johnny should go out and kick a soccer ball around with connor for a few minutes.

Billy: It’s not the right time. Can we please move on from this?

Chelsea: No, actually. No. You know, a few weeks ago, I would have accepted your response. I wanted to make everybody else happy, not create any waves. I was just feeling grateful that people were putting up with me. But now it’s about what’s best for me. Now it’s about what I want.

Billy: Wait a second now, okay, ’cause I am on your side. I mean, I brought you in on this podcast to be a partner.

Chelsea: I know, because you knew I could make it better.

Billy: Well, that is true, and it’s working because we are open and honest with each other. We are in sync in that way.

Chelsea: Well, except when it comes to johnny.

Billy: See, I disagree. I think we’re in sync there, too, because victoria and I have raised johnny exactly the way that you wanted him to be raised.

Chelsea: Billy, he is my biological son, and I don’t even get to see him or spend any time with him.

Billy: That was your choice, chelsea. This agreement that we have has worked for many, many years up until very recently. So you tell me, is something else going on? This isn’t charmin! No wonder I don’t feel as clean.

Sally: No, nothing. I didn’t have a business dinner scheduled all week. And you said imani arranged it for the three of us?

Nate: That’s right.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I mean, it was a hectic time at newman. Victoria had just come back, adam left newman media, but if it was in the books, it would’ve been here.

Nate: Okay, well, I guess there was some conflict with scheduling. Regardless, we’re here now, and we’d like to talk about the issue at hand.

Elena: But, first, we’d like to congratulate you on officially taking over at newman media.

Sally: Thank you, elena.

Elena: Yeah, I mean, it’s a huge job, but I’m sure you’ll crush it.

Nate: Yeah, I know something about taking a hard left in your career path. It’s tough but rewarding.

Sally: Yes, it is.

Nate: Well, elena would also like to make a move in her career. She wants to join us over at chancellor-winters, but to do that, she needs to be released from her current contract with newman media.

Sally: I see.

Elena: And I really appreciate and I’m grateful for my time at newman media. It was a really great experience.

Sally: And it shows. I mean, I think that’s why you’re such a great host at askmdnow. The audience can tell that you love what you’re doing. Visits to the site are up almost 20%. Average visit duration is up, bounce rate is down. Those are trends that advertisers pay for. So I can see why chancellor-winters would want to poach you.

Nate: It’s not a poaching situation.

Sally: Isn’t it? ‘Cause you’re trying to lure talent we have signed under contract. I’m not sure why I would let that happen.

Chelsea: What’s changed? A lot. Since I recovered from what my mother likes to refer to as “a huge emotional breakdown,” I have a different outlook on life. I’m a work in progress.

Billy: Welcome to the club.

Chelsea: I’ve always been an outsider here. Everyone’s always looked at me and viewed me with suspicion. And I can’t say I blame them because of my past and my history and the way I showed up to town. To be honest with you, it didn’t used to even bother me. I reveled in it.

Billy: You don’t feel the same anymore?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] When I hit rock bottom poisoning rey, I lost myself. I really did. I lost any sense of self-worth. I mean, even when I came home, I practically begged adam to take me back. What was I thinking?

Billy: Well, right now, I’m thinking that you’re glad that he didn’t take you up on the offer and that he is not in your life.

Chelsea: Listen, it’s hard to get some people out of our system, kind of like you and victoria.

[ Sighs ] The truth is, when I was in that really dark place, rey was the only one who reached out to me. He was so kind. When he died, I just felt like the rug got ripped out from under me. So I held on to things that made me feel safe and comfortable, you know, like my partnership with chloe and my design work.

Billy: Yeah, even I could see you were struggling.

Chelsea: I don’t think people realize what a big step it was for me to walk away from design, fashion. It’s all I knew I was good at. It was a huge part of my identity, but it didn’t make me happy. I had conditioned myself to believe that that’s as good as it’s going to get, but that something amazing happened. I realized I deserve more. I deserve to be happy.

Billy: Of course you do.

Chelsea: Working with you has been a big part of that epiphany. I realize I have a different skill set. Not just design, not just, you know, running cons.

Billy: Yeah, I think we’re all glad that you’re not in that line of work anymore.

Chelsea: Stepping into a new field where I had zero experience, zero training, and miraculously not sucking at it was a huge confidence booster. You know, I’d been so isolated for so long, and suddenly there are these people on the internet commenting that they are connecting with what I had to say.

Billy: No, I know the feeling. It’s kind of interesting. You think all those weird, quirky things that make you unlikable are actually things that make you relatable.

Chelsea: Yeah. So it’s made me realize I want to be open to letting other people into my life. And I think johnny’s a big part of that.

Billy: I’m not sure why you think that way.

Chelsea: Johnny already knows that victoria is not his biological mother. Would it really be so terrible if he learned that I am?

Billy: [ Clears throat ] We have an agreement, chelsea.

Chelsea: I know, billy. I know we have an agreement, but that was a long time ago. And I was in an entirely different place. I was a different person. You and victoria have given him everything. You’ve done an incredible job, but I’m not the same person i was when I signed that agreement years ago.

Billy: I understand that, but that does not negate the agreement that we signed.

Chelsea: Don’t you agree with me that kids deserve to know the true information about their birth? No secrets, no shame. You can’t deny johnny and connor are connected. Don’t they deserve to get to know each other? To have a bond? It would mean so much to them as they grow up.

Billy: I promise you, I will have the conversation with victoria.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Thank you.

Billy: I will let you know how it goes.

Chelsea: Wow, okay. Well, thank you. Now that that conversation is behind us, I guess we can focus on podcast ideas.

Billy: Yes, I would like to do that.

Chelsea: But?

Billy: But right now I’ve got an empty stomach, and I do not like to work on an empty stomach. So can we please get out of here? Lunch is on me.

Voice app: You’re right. It’s making me crazy. I can’t do what I love.

Mariah: And you’re positive that a picnic by the lake wouldn’t help? What if we brought pie? I’m sorry. Okay, I’m trying. I really am. But sometimes I feel like, I don’t know, I’m making it worse or I’m getting in the way.

Voice app: You are not the problem. You are wonderful.

Mariah: Oh, I know.

[ Chuckles ] But it’s very strange hearing that from a robotic voice. Nice, though. Very, very nice to hear it out loud. You know what we should do? I think that we should find something different for you to do during this time. You know, channel all of that creative energy into something, right?

Kyle: Hey, you two.

Mariah: Hey.

Kyle: Just who we were looking for.

Mariah: Oh, well, if you’re wondering why I’m not at jabot, it’s a funny story.

Summer: Save it. We actually don’t care why you’re not at jabot. And when he said you’re just who we’re looking for, he wasn’t talking about you.

Kyle: We want to talk to tessa.

I’m a ganiac, ganiac,

check my drawers.

Sally: The hard work that elena is putting into the site is just now starting to pay off.

Elena: Yes, but I think there are plenty of other doctors who would do just as good of a job as I have, and it would be easier for them because they’ve already built the foundation.

Sally: But we don’t have a list of replacements.

Elena: Actually, you do. I’ve compiled a list of 12 names of doctors who I think could start right away.

Sally: Is there a reason that you want to leave? Are you unhappy with us?

Elena: No, not at all. Like I said before, I really enjoyed my time at newman media.

Nate: But as the guy who was the original face of askmdnow, I was impressed with how elena stepped into that format seamlessly. She built on what we had created, and I am confident that any of the people on her list can do the same. The audience will continue to follow.

Sally: But we don’t know that for sure. Audiences don’t like change. Even when you left, nate, there was a drop-off. And when you’re on that screen, elena, you are not just a doctor. You’re talent. You have an intangible quality that not everyone has.

Nate: Well, I just made it tangible. I’ve written down a figure. It’s a financial incentive to release elena from her contract.

Sally: I will be sad to see you go, but best of luck.

Elena: Really? That’s — that’s it?

Sally: Yeah, I will have the papers drawn up today.

Nate: We already have the agreement written up. We can fill in the numbers and send it over to you.

Sally: Even better.

Elena: Thank you so much, sally.

Nate: It was a pleasure doing business with you.

Sally: You, too. And I really hope this move works out for you, elena. You’re a real talent.

Kyle: Tessa, we were wondering if you’re up for a new challenge.

Mariah: Oh, my gosh. We were just talking about that. You know, something to pour her incredible energy into, like baking or sculpting, juggling.

Summer: Or maybe something completely different.

Kyle: Would you be interested in being the new face for marchetti?

Mariah: What? That’s amazing.

Kyle: Yeah, we came up with the idea while we were brainstorming our new print campaign. You know, who would we want to represent the company now it’s a part of jabot?

Summer: And you’ve got a fresh look — elegant, sophisticated, fun. I mean, that is our brand.

Mariah: I agree. She would be perfect.

Kyle: And we loved the photo on your album and said that’s the exact look we’re going for, and we were like, “we should get someone like tessa.”

Summer: Then we were like, “why don’t we just get the original, tessa herself?”

Mariah: I am stunned. I can’t believe this. What do you think, babe?

Voice app: I’m speechless.

[ Laughter ]

Mariah: Okay, I see what you did there.

Voice app: I’m really flattered, but it’s a reminder of what I might be losing.

Nate: I thought you’d be more excited about being released from your contract.

Elena: I’m happy.

Nate: Are you sure?

Elena: I mean, I’m not dancing in the streets, but, yeah, I’m pleased.

Nate: Good, because we did it. We got what we wanted. And I did not think sally was going to let you go, but she saw all those zeroes in my offer and waved goodbye.

Elena: Yeah, good job. You read the situation perfectly. At least with sally.

Nate: What do you mean? What did I miss?

Elena: I think it’s crazy that I even have to explain this to you. You remember all the confusion about the first meeting that imani set up between you, her, and sally?

Nate: What are you getting at?

Elena: The reason sally couldn’t remember canceling the meeting is because she was never invited in the first place. So that dinner between the three of you was really supposed to be an intimate night with just you and imani. She set it all up. I’m steve.

Billy: You good with couch?

Chelsea: Yeah, yeah. Just give me one second.

Billy: Alright.

Chelsea: Sally, hi.

Sally: Chelsea.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] How are you? I’ve been worried. I’m sure it’s sinking in the way adam just dumped you like that, you poor thing.

Sally: I don’t want or need your sympathy.

Chelsea: You know, I really admire the way you’ve been handling this breakup. You’re so brave. Sitting here in public, probably wondering if everybody’s out there whispering about you.

Sally: Did you handle it well whenever adam broke up with you?

Chelsea: You seem a lot better than the last time I saw you, and you went chasing after adam. Eugh, not particularly dignified. I felt so bad for you.

Sally: Well, if anyone can empathize with adam breaking up with me, it’s you. How many times did it take for you to realize that he wasn’t the one? Five, six? It’s such a shame ’cause you guys have a kid, and you still couldn’t make it work.

Chelsea: Well, if you’ll excuse me, someone’s waiting for me. Have a great day.

Billy: Hey. Is everything okay?

Chelsea: Everything’s perfect.

Mariah: Tessa, you would not be losing anything. You know, losing your ability to sing, that’s temporary. Frustrating as hell but temporary. You’ll come back.

Kyle: You will.

Summer: Better than ever.

Mariah: And in the meantime, seems like kyle and summer want you to be a part of their new adventure. You love marchetti. You would be draped in their clothing. So glamorous. You’d be the face that launched 1,000 pair of high-end shoes.

[ Chuckles ]

Kyle: Better be a whole lot more than that.

Summer: Tessa, this might be a perfect time for you to try branching out while you recuperate. You wouldn’t have to use your voice at all, and you could really focus on healing.

Mariah: Yeah, and your face plastered all over billboards, magazines — that’s good for the tessa porter brand. You would expand your fan base for when you get back to performing.

Kyle: And when things are back to normal, you can have your music career and continue to model for us.

Mariah: Best of both worlds.

Nate: I can’t believe your mind went there. What?

Elena: Tell me, did you speak to sally or her assistant before the meeting?

Nate: No.

Elena: Exactly. Imani arranged the whole thing. She told you that everything was set, and then she told you that it got canceled last second. And you bought it.

Nate: I had no reason not to. Meetings get canceled or postponed all the time. Things come up. It happens. Look, just because imani’s involved doesn’t mean there’s some secret plot. Come on, elena. You really have it in for her, and it is clouding your mind.

Elena: No, nate. I have a very clear picture of the situation.

Nate: I cannot believe we’re having this conversation.

Elena: Neither can I. And I can’t help but wonder if the reason you’re not seeing what she’s up to is because you don’t want to. Girls trip.

Chelsea: I love the personal episodes, but I think it would be really fun if we dug our teeth into something meatier.

Billy: What do you mean by that?

Chelsea: Like true crime. You know, we found an unsolved mystery and just started digging?

Billy: Yeah, no, I like that. You got anything in mind?

Chelsea: No, not yet. But I can do some research. You know, you can find something that affects an entire town, a whole family.

Billy: Mm-hmm. That’s good, right? Find the skeletons in the closet.

Chelsea: Skeletons are always good.

Billy: Always good.

Chelsea: Look how “the grinning soul” hit a gold mine when he started discovering ashland locke’s secrets.

Billy: Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, he found the right target. Ashland locke is the gift that keeps on giving. I got to hand it to the guy. I really respect him, and I really like that podcast.

Chelsea: Yeah, I’m sure “the grinning soul” respects you, too.

Billy: I hope so. I have to say one thing, though. He’s definitely impressed that I brought you on board.

Chelsea: Ah, well, I have another idea. You know, we can find somebody that got a terrible rumor spread about them online, the damaged it caused, how they survived.

Billy: Understand why they started it and who started it. That’s good, too.

Chelsea: Exactly. Exactly. You know, I keep thinking about the scams anita and I pulled. There’s a lot of material there. Maybe an entire series.

[ Both chuckle ]

Billy: Scamming, scheming.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Billy: All that. I think our audience is going to eat that up.

Chelsea: Yeah.

Billy: And, of course, coming from us, there’s a lot of backstory there. A lot to unpack, isn’t there?

Chelsea: Mm. You know, you have an entirely different energy when you talk about this stuff. It looks good on you.

Billy: Well, thank you. I appreciate that. To be honest, I love it. I love sitting here finding a topic and riffing off it and, you know, observing people and the planet and seeing how it all mix together. And right now, it’s very nice to be out of the corporate arena.

Chelsea: Why do you keep going back to the corporate world, then?

Nate: I’m not trying to avoid seeing anything.

Elena: That’s disingenuous. You’re acting like I’m out of line for even suggesting that imani is capable of engineering a dinner between the two of you.

Nate: Are you accusing me of being attracted to her?

Elena: No, I’m not saying that it’s sexual. But the way that she’s always fawning over you, that’s got to be a pretty big ego boost. Not to mention, you just told me that she’s been fueling all your frustrations with your situation with devon. Maybe she’s even pushing you to be a little more aggressive?

Nate: I don’t need my ego boosted. And as for imani, she’s noticed there is a family dynamic at play, that devon sometimes tries to hold me back. The same thing happens between her and amanda, and it is refreshing to have someone to talk to while I’m at work who supports me.

Elena: Oh, as opposed to your girlfriend who couldn’t comprehend? What, because I’m not an executive?

Nate: I didn’t say that. You have been incredibly supportive. This has been a big change from medicine to the corporate world, and you have been there for me every step of the way.

Elena: And yet you still don’t think I really understand what’s going on — at least, not in the way that imani does.

[ Scoffs ]

Voice app: Thank you for this life-changing offer. Sorry for my pity party.

Mariah: Hey, you have nothing to apologize for.

Kyle: Absolutely. We know you’re dealing with a lot.

Summer: We don’t want to pressure you. We’re just excited about the possibility. Don’t let our enthusiasm scare you off.

Voice app: Exciting opportunity. Might be perfect, especially now.

Mariah: Yeah. And you get to do something fun while you heal.

Kyle: I think it’d be perfect for you.

Summer: Definitely.

Mariah: So we all think that you would be an amazing model.

Summer: Look at that, mariah and i agreeing on something.

[ Both chuckle ]

Kyle: Well, let us know what you decide.

Summer: Alright, reach out if you have any questions.

Kyle: Keep us updated.

Mariah: Bye, guys. How about that? That is so exciting. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this.

Voice app: Stop pretending. This was all you, wasn’t it? Your heart is at the heart of everything you do.

Voice app: I saw you and kyle conspiring yesterday. It was your idea, wasn’t it?

Mariah: No. No, this was — this was all kyle. I mean, you saw how excited he was. Okay. Okay. I know. We can’t lie to each other. It’s not good. So… maybe this was my idea. Okay? You know, maybe I thought I found the perfect thing for you to do while you recuperate. And maybe, selfishly, I want to see my beautiful wife’s face on billboards and in magazines. Is that really so bad?

Voice app: I should be mad, but I’m too much in love.

Mariah: [ Breathes deeply ]

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: I’ve known you a long time, billy, and I have seen this scenario play out time and time again with your family. You think you need to live up to expectations. You think you need to act a certain way, and then you do for a while until you can’t take it anymore and then the real billy comes out.

Billy: I haven’t exactly been a model abbott.

Chelsea: Well, maybe not, but you do look really good in a suit.

Billy: Thank you. Appreciate that.

Chelsea: The problem with these expectations is you don’t fit into a little abbott box, and then you rebel.

Billy: Let me ask you a question. How much is your hourly rate for this kind of analysis?

Chelsea: Just a little friendly observation.

Billy: Is that right? Just a friendly observation? Okay, well, look, I am in a really good place right now. I know that you have seen me fall back into that cycle in the past, but I believe that I am past the need to rebel.

Chelsea: Really? So you feel fulfilled being a part of chancellor-winters?

Billy: Well, yeah, I mean, I, uh… it’s a little difficult to answer that honestly.

Chelsea: That means the answer is no.

Nate: You want me to be honest?

Elena: Always.

Nate: I honestly feel like you take devon’s side whenever we talk about those dynamics.

Elena: [ Scoffs ]

Nate: “He has more business experience.”

Elena: That is the truth. Why would that offend you?

Nate: It feels dismissive.

Elena: It takes experience to make the right decision. Just like you can’t walk into an operating room and get it right the first time out. Why would it be any different with business?

Nate: I have a business education. I have run an entire hospital department. I know how to navigate those complicated relationships — when to compromise, when to stay strong.

Nate: So then what you’re actually saying is that I’m just not supporting you enough. Or not in the way that imani is. Look, I don’t know what this girl’s motives are, but she is trying to be your champion.

Nate: You’re blowing this all out of proportion.

Elena: No, I am not. I think you are consciously or unconsciously refusing to see what is right in front of your face. And I respect you so much that I am trying to tell you the truth, but you keep pushing me back. I think you just like the story that imani is telling better, the one where you’re misunderstood and underappreciated. She is telling you everything you want to hear. A beautiful woman stroking your ego. And what could be more enticing than that?
