Xander: Sarah. Can’t believe it. You’re really here.

Gwen as sarah: Well, yeah.

Xander: Oh, thank god you’re all right. Thank god! [Takes deep breath]

Xander: [Sighs]

Abigail: Kate.

Kate: What? Oh, hi.

Abigail: I see something’s wrong. Did you get bad news about philip?

Kate: No, actually. Nothing on that front. Have you ever been going about your business and suddenly find yourself face-to-face with two of the people you despise the most in the world?

Abigail: Hasn’t happened in a while. Do I know these people?

Kate: Yeah, well, um, they definitely did damage to your life.

Abigail: So it’s gotta be jake and gabi, right?

Kate: Give the woman a big cigar.

Jake: Did I remember to thank you for saving my life back there?

Gabi: I think so.

Jake: If you hadn’t pulled me off that curb, kate would’ve run right over me.

Gabi: Hell hath no fury.

Jake: No, I do not scorn her, okay? I just–

Gabi: Dumped her? Hey, listen. Watch yourself. She may still have the hots for you.

Jake: Okay, okay. I’ll watch myself if you promise to watch yourself.

Gabi: What does that mean?

Jake: My nephew, johnny, he’s got the hots for you.

Gabi: [Scoffing chuckle]

Demon johnny: Checkmate.

[Sighs] I’m sorry, elvis, but the king had to be sacrificed for the greater good, or in this case, the greater evil.

Judge: Jason smith is your last witness. Am I correct?

Ej: His testimony should be stricken from the record. Every word of it was a lie!

Judge: One more outburst from you, mr. Dimera, and I will cite you for contempt.

Ej: [Sighs]

Belle: He means it. Keep your mouth shut.

Ej: Okay.

Judge: Ms. Trask?

Melinda: I have a sworn deposition from the victim, samantha brady dimera, and i request that it be entered into evidence.

Judge: So ordered. It’s unfortunate that mrs. Dimera didn’t testify in person.

Belle: I would like it entered into the record that defense counsel had no chance to cross examine.

Melinda: Mrs. Dimera did not feel safe enough to be present, your honor. Not with her kidnapper being seated at the defense table.

Belle: Objection!

Judge: Sustained. Please refrain from commentary, ms. Trask. Any further witnesses?

Melinda: No, your honor. The prosecution rests.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Abigail: I know how much jake and gabi’ve hurt you, but, I mean, it’s all worked out for the best, right? You’re with roman now.

Kate: And I’m happy.

Abigail: So all’s well that ends well.

Kate: The hortons always say that.

Abigail: No. Actually, that was shakespeare, but.

Kate: Yeah, actually, I know that. My point is that obviously, I do not forgive betrayal as easily as you do.

Abigail: But you got even, though, right? I mean, you voted with ej and chad to fire jake from dimera.

Kate: What are you doing here, anyway? Shouldn’t you be covering ej’s trial?

Abigail: Well, I’m actually working on another story about my cousin, sarah.

Kate: Oh. So what’s up with her? Why did she act like she was with rex this whole time?

Abigail: That’s what I’m trying to find out. I promised maggie. She’s obviously really worried. She thought she knew where her daughter was for the last year and turns out she was wrong.

Kate: Yeah, well, that had to have been tough on maggie.

Abigail: Mm-hmm. And xander is actually really upset, too, so he and I are working together.

Kate: That’s quite an odd couple.

Abigail: Yeah.

[Chuckles] Yeah. But he and i have one very important thing in common, that we both care about sarah and we’re very determined to figure out where she’s been for the last year.

Gwen as sarah: Get off me, you creep!

Maggie: Sarah! Xander has been as worried about you as I have.

Gwen as sarah: Okay, yeah, well, now you can see that I am fine, so you can go back to wherever you came from.

Xander: I’m not budging until you and I talk.

Gwen as sarah: See? Now do you see why I didn’t want to even want him to know where I was? I was afraid this neanderthal would find me and drag me back to his cave.

Maggie: Sweetheart, I know that you changed your mind about marrying xander, but I also know that you were very much in love with him at one time. And he was terribly distraught when you left. The least you can do is give him ten minutes of your time.

Gwen as sarah: Fine. Ten minutes.

Xander: Like, I know I kind of just barged in on you two. Would you mind giving us that ten minutes alone?

Maggie: Um, why don’t we talk about this out in the hall? Don’t you go anywhere. Come on.

Gwen as sarah: [Blows air] Okay. [Takes deep breath] Keep it together, gwen. You fooled the mother. You can fool xander, too.

Chad: Hey.

Johnny: Hey.

Chad: What are yo up to?

Johnny: Oh, just playing some chess against myself. Do you know what happened to nonno’s set?

Chad: Yeah, I replaced it with the one abigail bought. It’s great, isn’t it?

Johnny: You don’t think that’s sort of disrespectful?

Chad: It’s a game.

Johnny: It’s part of who he was.

Chad: All right, look. I didn’t find out stefano was my father until I was in college, so I didn’t grow up hearing about the whole legacy thing like you did.

Johnny: Is that why you didn’t have any problems selling my father down the river in court?

Judge: Is the defense prepared to present its case?

Belle: Your honor, the defense was not offered an opportunity to cross-examine samantha brady dimera and mrs. Dimera’s deposition offered no direct evidence of any connection whatsoever between my client and the kidnapping.

Judge: I’ll take that under advisement.

Belle: Thank you, your honor. It is our contention that the prosecution failed to make a prima facie case against ej dimera, therefore we request that the case be dismissed for lack of evidence.

Judge: So you won’t be calling any witnesses?

Belle: That is correct.

Ej: No. It isn’T. I’ll be testifying. My asthma felt anything but normal.

Belle: Uh, your honor, I need a moment to confer with my client.

Judge: Make it brief.

Belle: Are you out of your mind? Everything is going well. Trask is not making her case.

Ej: Jason smith said under oath that he was taking orders from me and chad got on the stand and backed him up. Their testimony needs to be refuted. I can tell that this judge is not a fan of mine, but I really–

Belle: ‘Cause you keep shooting off your big mouth in this courtroom.

Ej: He holds my future in his hands. If I can’t sway him, then he’s going to find me guilty.

Belle: You are a lawyer. You know if you get up there and testify that trask’s gonna cross-examine you and she’s gonna bring up every terrible thing you have ever done.

Ej: I need to testify on my own behalf.

Belle: It is my professional advice that you not do that.

Melinda: Can we please get on with this? [Scoffs]

Judge: Has the defense reached a decision?

Belle: We have, your honor.

[Clears throat] The defense calls ej dimera.

Chad: Your father swore to me he was being set up, that he had nothing to do with sami’s kidnapping. I believed him. But yesterday, I found out that every word out of that man’s mouth is a damn lie.

Johnny: What do you mean?

Chad: He forced himself on my wife.

Johnny: What?

Chad: In the witness room at the courthouse. I walked in on him and he was slobbering all over her.

[Soft tense music]

Johnny: Maybe it wasn’t what it seemed.

Chad: You don’t think I know what kissing is?

Johnny: What I meant was maybe the feeling was mutual.

Chad: Not a chance. Abigail was appalled. She was sick to her stomach.

Johnny: I’m sorry, I guess I’m just remembering that affair they had back when I was a kid. Mom said they couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

Chad: Trust me, I haven’t forgotten about that. Yesterday, that was all ej. And it was in that moment that i realized that he’s been playing me on every level since the minute he came back here.

Jake: I still can’t believe johnny hit on you.

Gabi: Why not? Guys hit on me all the time.

Jake: Because the horny, little bastard did it right in front of me. And wait, what do you mean guys all the time?

Gabi: Doesn’t matter.

Jake: It does to me.

Gabi: Look, it’s very sweet, but if johnny has a thing for me, we need to figure out a way to use it to our advantage.

Jake: Why?

Gabi: Because he’s voting ej’s shares of dimera’s stock as well as his, so he’s a heavy hitter now.

Jake: Oh, yeah, all right. Look, I see what you’re saying. I don’t like it, but I see it. If johnny’s on our side, it gives us leverage to get victor on the dimera board.

Gabi: And then we’ll be cruising our way to a double takeover. You’ll run dimera and I’ll run titan.

Jake: You make it sound awfully easy.

Gabi: Maggie’s behind us.

Jake: Yeah. Still surprised about that, to be honest.

Gabi: Maggie wants victor to slow down. She’s no dummy. She’s not going to stand in the way of a good idea.

Gwen as sarah: [Sighs] You’re finally back.

Maggie: You know what? I think I’m gonna let you and xander talk privately.

Gwen as sarah: You’re gonna leave me alone with him?

Maggie: Well, I have to speak with henderson about getting your room ready.

Gwen as sarah: I’m not staying.

Maggie: Excuse me?

Gwen as sarah: I got in late last night, so I took a room at the salem inn.

Maggie: Well, you can’t stay there indefinitely.

Gwen as sarah: I’m not. I booked a flight for later today.

Maggie: You just got here.

Gwen as sarah: But… my patients. They need me.

Maggie: Where are you working? I don’t know– where are you living?

Gwen as sarah: I don’t want to say in front of him. I came back so that you wouldn’t worry and now you don’t have to.

Maggie: Then, um… this is goodbye.

Gwen as sarah: Yeah.

Maggie: Okay, then. You need to call me regularly from now on, is that clear?

[Soft tense music]

Xander: She misses you so much. You can’t even spend one more day with her?

Gwen as sarah: [Scoffs] You’re not thinking of her. You’re only thinking of yourself.

Xander: That’s not true, and you know it.

Gwen as sarah: Just say what you came to say. Clock’s ticking.

Xander: Fine. I will.

[Sighs] When you left me that day, I– you sounded like a woman I didn’t even know. And you still do. Why is that? This is the sound of nature breathing.

Jake: I hate to even ask this, but how do you suppose you’re gonna get johnny on our side?

Gabi: I’m gonna flirt with him. Make him think I have the hots for him, too.

Jake: No freakin’ way.

Gabi: He’s a kid.

Jake: He’s old enough.

Gabi: How am I gonna– I’ll have him wrapped around my finger before you know it. And then I’ll be calling the shots.

Jake: Can one of your shots be keep your damn hands off me?

Gabi: Once we have him on the hook, we don’t want to lose him.

Jake: Wait a minute. Are you–are you saying you’re gonna sleep with him to get his vote?

Chad: I’m telling you the truth about your dad. And I’m doing it for your sake. Swear to god.

Johnny: [Sighs] I know this isn’t the first time my dad’s crossed a line he shouldn’t have crossed.

Chad: Abby had to push him off of her.

Johnny: I’m sorry I said that about you guys. I know you guys love each other very much and i shouldn’t have implied that she was fine with what he was doing.

Chad: It’s fine. As long as you still don’t think that.

Johnny: [Chuckles] And my dad had me thinking that he was the real victim here.

Chad: Well, he’s good at that.

Johnny: Yeah. He told me that lucas kidnapped my mom and that you were framing him for it. I guess he wasn’t just lying to you. Sounds like he was doing it to me, too.

Belle: Did you have your wife kidnapped?

Ej: No, I did not.

Belle: You’re under oath, mr. Dimera.

Ej: I’m aware of that.

Belle: Tell the court about the day mrs. Dimera went missing.

Ej: I confronted samantha with evidence that she’d been cheating on me. She denied it at first, but then she admitted it. I’ll admit I was angry. I couldn’t see past her betrayal. But she’s the mother of my children. No matter what she did to me, I never would have chloroformed her and made her my prisoner. I would never separate her from our children, I swear.

Belle: No further questions.

Judge: Ms. Trask?

Melinda: Mr. Dimera, I was so hoping we’d have a chance to chat. You said in your sworn testimony, you stated that you would never chloroform your wife or separate her from her children. Is that correct?

Ej: It is.

Melinda: And has it slipped your mind that you’ve already done both of those things to mrs. Dimera?

Gwen as sarah: I’m the same person I always was.

Xander: No. Something’s off. I kissed you goodnight and the day before our wedding, you told me how much you loved me. But by the morning, you were shagging rex brady.

Gwen as sarah: Yeah. Because I came to my senses about you and he was there. It’s understandable. He’s my ex-husband.

Xander: And you told everyone that you’re running off with him, but you didn’T. You turned on him like you did on me.

Gwen as sarah: Yes, ’cause i realized that I’m in no shape to be with any man, so I told rex that I needed time to figure myself out on my own.

Xander: Well, maggie cares about you deeply. You lied to her about where you were.

Gwen as sarah: I wanted to be left alone and I was afraid that she’d tell you where I was. I was trying to avoid this.

Xander: Oh, so you hate me now?

Gwen as sarah: Yes! You put another woman’s baby in my arms and told me that it was mine! You let me fall in love with her and then you watched as she was taken away from me! How could I not hate you?

Xander: It took time, but you did get past her.

Gwen as sarah: Yeah. I said I did. I even wanted it to be true, but no mother can get over something like that. Not ever. So why can’t you get that through your thick head?

Kate: Okay, so after sarah told rex that she wasn’t going to go with him, this dimera pilot whisked her out of town?

Abigail: Apparently. I mean, he won’t talk to us unless xander or I pay him off. I mean, the guy’s a real operator.

Kate: Okay, but how could someone like sarah commandeer a dimera plane?

Abigail: Well, I think the pilot was freelancing and then he just happened to have access to another company’s old jets? I don’t actually think it had anything to do with dimera enterprises. Although xander did suspect that maybe kristen had something to do with sarah’s decision to leave town. But he dismissed it.

Kate: Why would he do that? I mean, that’s exactly what kristin did to me.

Abigail: Xander mentioned that recently. Okay, so kristin was pretending to be susan and she tried to trick you to leave town, right?

Kate: Oh, my god. All right, so vivian ordered her to break up jake and me. So under the pretext that it was susan, she told me she had a premonition and I should leave. But then when I found that susan was actually kristin, she knocked me out and stuck me down in the tunnels.

Abigail: Oh, good god.

Kate: And at the same time, she puts on a mask so she looks like me and breaks up with jake, who’s a complete idiot. I don’t know why he fell for that, ’cause we were perfectly happy. We were supposed to be going on a vacation.

Abigail: Okay, and so then, he just–he dumps you out of the blue?

Kate: Yeah, yeah. Total 180. Meanwhile, kristin stuffs me in a giant suitcase to ship me out of town.

Abigail: Wait. Did you just say giant suitcase?

Kate: [Laughing] Yeah. Pretty hard to believe, right?

Abigail: Actually, not that hard. My plaque psoriasis…

Abigail: So how did you manage to escape?

Maggie: Abigail, kate.

Kate: Hey. Hi.

Abigail: Where’s xander? Did you bring the money?

Maggie: What money?

Abigail: Well, we found the pilot that flew sarah out of town and he won’t talk to us unless we pay him off. And so xander was headed to your place to see if you’d put up the cash.

Maggie: Well, he never got around to asking me for any money.

Abigail: Well, why not?

Maggie: Well–[Chuckles] I guess it’s not necessary, because xander is now with sarah at the moment.

Gwen as sarah: What you and victor did to kristen and me is unforgivable.

Xander: Yeah, that’s why kristin took so much joy in telling me about you and rex. It was her, not susan banks like I told you.

Gwen as sarah: I couldn’t care less who it was.

Xander: Did kristin get to you? Did she talk you into walking out on me?

Gwen as sarah: That was my decision. So now I’ve answered all of your questions. I have to go check out at the inn.

Xander: Oh, so you can disappear again? How long for this time?

Gwen as sarah: It’s really none of your business!

Xander: You didn’t even say goodbye to maggie. Don’t you care that you’ve broken her heart?

Gwen as sarah: I’m sorry for making her suffer. It’s why I came back. To put her mind at ease.

Xander: Your half-sister died last year. She had to go through that without you.

Gwen as sarah: And I will do better at keeping in touch, so… now you’ve seen me. You can quit obsessing over me and move on with your life. Go be with gwen.

Xander: How’d you know I’m with gwen?

Johnny: [Sighs] Seems pretty clear I need to rethink my relationship with my father. I don’t know if you heard, but he gave me control over his shares at the company.

Chad: Shin told me.

Johnny: You should know that the original plan was to combine our shares and use them to stop you from derailing his agenda.

Chad: You still thinking about that?

Johnny: I’m thinking maybe I lined up with the wrong guy. Maybe I should be working with you.

Melinda: Isn’t it true that you chloroformed your wife, samantha, so that you could leave the country with your children? Your honor. [Scoffs]

Judge: Answer the question, mr. Dimera.

Melinda: Oh, may I remind you you are still under oath.

Ej: I believed my children were in danger.

Melinda: I’ll take that as a yes.

Ej: It was a tense situation to say the least. Samantha had shot me in the head and left me to die.

Melinda: Oh, have the two of you always been in such a violent relationship?

Belle: Objection, your honor.

Judge: Overruled. Answer the question.

Ej: Um… what–what was the question?

Melinda: Have you ever chloroformed your wife in order to take your children by force from her?

Ej: I was trying to protect them. It was an act of love, not revenge.

Melinda: You’ve turned to chloroform once before, haven’t you, hmm? Why don’t you please tell the court about the first time you chloroformed your wife and kidnapped her? Life’s been hard enough.

Jake: Eh.

Gabi: Would you stop acting like a jealous idiot? I’m not gonna sleep with johnny.

Jake: What are you gonna do?

Gabi: It’s called leading him on. I mean, I’ve done it before. I did it with stephen to get control of the company. Worked like a charm.

Jake: Yeah, it worked so well you fell into bed with him and in love.

Gabi: But I am with you now, the love of my life, not some kid. Johnny? Come on. You’re my big, studly, handsome man.

Jake: And don’t you forget it.

Gabi: All right, now that we’re on the same page, I’m gonna go over to the mansion, talk to johnny, feel him up–

Jake: What?

Gabi: Feel him out, feel him out.

Jake: You know what, gabi? This is starting to make me feel anxious.

Gabi: Well, don’T. It’s fine. I’m telling you. I got this.

Johnny: If my dad goes to prison, it’s gonna be a disaster for dimera.

Chad: Vultures like jake and gabi will try to make a power play. You can be on that.

Johnny: Which is why you and I should start working together. What do you say?

Chad: I’m all for alliances, but I don’t want to get burned again.

Johnny: Sounds like you don’t trust me.

Chad: Trust has to be earned, and I barely know you, kid.

Johnny: Look, I know I’m young, but–

Chad: The closest you’ve come to running dimera is sitting on your dad’s lap playing with the keyboard at his computer.

Johnny: I’ll prove myself. You’ll see.

Chad: I’d better.

Johnny: [Chuckles]

[Sighs]

Demon johnny: Eh, I can’t blame you for being cautious, chad. You were just about to make a deal with the devil.

Ej: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Melinda: Allow me to refresh your memory. You once chloroformed a pregnant mrs. Dimera and brought her to a warehouse where your brother andre was waiting to extract stem cells from the umbilical cord of your unborn child. Or has that slipped your memory?

Ej: I respectfully invoke my rights under the fifth amendment.

Melinda: That is the first smart move you’ve made all day, mr. Dimera. [Clicks pen no further questions.

Judge: Would you care to redirect?

Belle: Definitely. No matter what may or may not have happened in the distant past, we are talking about the events of august 11th. On the day in question, did you order that your wife be chloroformed and kidnapped?

Melinda: Objection. Asked and answered.

Judge: Sustained.

Belle: No further questions.

Judge: You may step down, mr. Dimera.

[Soft dramatic music]

Belle: I tried to tell you.

Ej: [Sighs]

Judge: Anything further from the defense?

Belle: No, your honor. The defense rests.

Judge: Then we’ll move on to closing arguments.

Abigail: I just–I can’t believe after all this time, sarah just shows up out of the blue?

Maggie: Yeah, I can’t believe it, either.

Abigail: So is she okay?

Maggie: She–she seems a bit distant, I guess. But otherwise, fine.

Kate: Well, I’m glad that breaking rex’s heart isn’t weighing too heavily on her.

Abigail: So did she say anything about where she’s been all this time?

Maggie: She won’t tell me.

Abigail: What?

Maggie: I couldn’t press the issue because xander showed up and said she wanted to talk to her alone. And I agreed.

Abigail: [Sighs] Okay, well, then maybe you’ll get some answers when you go back to the house.

Maggie: Well, I don’t know if she’ll still be there.

Abigail: Why?

Maggie: She informed me that when she finishes talking to xander, she’s going to check out at the salem inn and take a flight out.

Abigail: [Sighs] Did she say where she’s going?

Maggie: No, she’s just, um… she’s just very distant. [Sighs]

Abigail: Okay, that’s really odd.

Maggie: Yeah, I agree. I was just so relieved to see sarah in the flesh. So then I could stop worrying that anything awful had happened to her. [Sighs] But it’s not like her visit put me completely at ease. She’s just–I don’t know. She’s not herself.

Xander: You don’t even know gwen. How could you know she’s with me?

Gwen as sarah: My mom told me right before you came in. She said you and this gwen person are very happy together and very much in love. Is that not true? Are you… not in love with gwen?

Xander: After what you did to me, I didn’t think I could ever love anyone again. Didn’t want to love anyone. Yeah, then… gwen came along and before I knew it, yeah, I love her.

Gwen as sarah: Great. Then go be with gwen. And leave me the hell alone. My asthma felt anything but normal.

[Soft dramatic music]

Xander: Cake? I ask you to marry me and you want cake?

Sarah: I want you to get me some cake.

Xander: Is this your gentle way of shooting me down?

Sarah: It’s my gentle way of asking you to get me some cake.

Xander: I’m on my knees, unemployed, apparently unengaged. I’m not really in a cake kind of place right now.

Sarah: Would you just open the damn box?

Xander: Oh, this is really weird.

Sarah: [Sighs]

Well? Will you?

Xander: Okay.

Sarah: [Chuckles]

Xander: I’ll have some cake.

Sarah: You jerk!

Xander: Of course I’ll marry you! Don’t you remember I was just on my knees trying to get you to marry me.

Sarah: I know, but I just wanted you to know that it was mutual. That I want this as much as you do.

Xander: Don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.

Sarah: [Chuckles] Me neither.

Kate: So mystery solved. Nothing disastrous happened to sarah, except she seems like she’s turned into sort of a bitch. [Chuckles] You want a drink?

Abigail: Oh, this time of day?

Kate: Oh, come on. It’s 5:00 somewhere in the world, right?

Abigail: Okay. I’ll have a glass of wine.

Kate: Yes. [Chuckles]

[Sighs] And at the same time, she puts on a mask so she looks like me and breaks up with jake, who’s a complete idiot. I don’t know why he fell for that, ’cause we were perfectly happy. We were supposed to be going on a vacation.

Xander: Rex’s mum, kate? She figured out that kristen was pretending to be susan, so kristen knocked her out and stuck her in that secret room in the tunnels. Kristen has all these masks that she can use to make her look like whoever she wants to be.

Maggie: I was just so relieved to see sarah in the flesh. So then I could stop worrying that anything awful had happened to her. But it’s not like her visit put me completely at ease. She’s just–I don’t know. She’s not herself.

Abigail: Oh, my god.

Kate: So red or white? Hey, where you going?

Gabi: Hello? Anybody home?

Johnny: What a surprise. You look beautiful.

Gabi: Thank you. And, uh, you look like you’ve been fencing.

Johnny: I was working with my instructor.

Gabi: Mm. Outside?

Johnny: That’s an intense workout.

Gabi: Guess so.

[Both chuckle] You’re sweating and it’s, like, 30 degrees outside.

Johnny: Well, hot as hell for me. So gabi, what brings you by?

Gabi: I thought you’d never ask.

Melinda: So your fate is in the judge’s hands now. Thank you for making my job so easy.

Ej: Go to hell.

[Ej sighs] Well, that was a disaster.

Belle: One of your own making. Arrogant jerk.

Ej: I thought if I was a surprise witness, trask wouldn’t have the time to dig up the dirt on me.

Belle: Oh, my god, ej. She has been after you for years. She prosecuted sami. She probably knows about every jaywalking ticket you’ve ever gotten.

Ej: Okay, made your point.

[Both sigh] Okay, what are my chances?

Belle: [Scoffs] Well, I tried to do as much damage control as I could in my closing trying to prove that this case was different than every other time you’ve chloroformed my sister, but–

Ej: Thank you for trying. I’m aware that I behaved idiotically and made your job more difficult.

Belle: Well, you still have one thing going for you. There really is no direct evidence of your guilt.

Ej: It can’t be. I’m innocent.

Melinda: Well, we’re about to find out if that’s true.

Belle: What does that mean?

Melinda: The judge is gonna rule from the bench.

Belle: [Scoffs] I didn’t expect to get that decision for weeks.

Melinda: Well, you thought wrong. Apparently, he’s already reached a verdict. It’s my 5:52 woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Ej: What do you think this means?

Belle: Well, I’m sure you know a fast verdict usually favors the defendant.

Ej: What the hell are you doing here?

Chad: Well, I heard there was a verdict. Decided I wanted to witness your downfall in person.

Ej: You changed your testimony and I have no idea why.

Chad: You know what you did.

Ej: I assure you, I have no idea–

Judge: I am ready to deliver my verdict. I’m sure you’re all surprised at how quickly I came to this decision, but after a review of the testimony I heard, it was clear. In the matter of people V. Elvis dimera, I find the defendant guilty as charged.

Melinda: Your honor, the people request remand.

Judge: Ms. Brady?

Belle: Your honor, the defendant is already out on bail. The defense requests that he get to remain in his home until sentencing.

Melinda: Your honor, the people object. The defendant has power and wealth at his command. He’s a huge flight risk.

Judge: I agree. Mr. Dimera, you are immediately remanded to salem pd holding where you will await transfer to statesville.

[Gavel impacts]

Gabi: I haven’t been able to stop thinking about our conversation yesterday.

Johnny: The one where you said we have interests in common, yeah?

Gabi: Yeah. I wanted to talk to you about what our partnership might look like.

Johnny: You know, I’ve actually been giving that a lot of thought.

Gabi: Hmm.

Johnny: And I was thinking that it might look something like this.

Maggie: Oh, so how did it go with sarah?

Xander: She made it quite clear that she still hates me.

Maggie: [Sighs] I’m sorry. Do you at least understand what caused her change of heart?

Xander: No. She said the same thing she said a year ago. I just don’t understand her, maggie. I was so sure that there was more to the story.

Abigail: Sarah? Thank god I caught you. Um, we need to talk.

Ava as sarah: Abigail, I’m so sorry, but if I don’t leave right now, I’m gonna miss my flight.

Abigail: Well, just answer one question.

Ava as sarah: What is it?

Abigail: You’re not really sarah, are you?

Kayla: Must have a roster or something or a softball team photo.

[Dramatic music]

Mother superior: Sister? May I ask just what you’re doing?

[Phone rings]

Steve: Yeah, brady? Listen, kayla’s on the inside. I really hope she’s okay in there. Right, I’ll keep you posted.

Kristen: Kayla will be just fine, father nichols.

Steve: Kristen?

Kristen: See, you’re the one who needs to pray for absolution.

Steve: Whoa, hold on.

Kristen: It is time you were given your last rites, patch. Are you having a moment of déj vu?

Steve: Is that what this is?

Kristen: Well, you caught me off guard, uh, at marlena’s all those months ago, so I’m just returning the favor.

[Tense music]

Abigail: We just have a few questions about a flight that you took last march. Um, do you happen to remember flying this woman out of salem?

Xander: Her name is sarah horton.

Ned: Pretty girl. Definitely not a face you’d ever forget.

Gwen: Ava, where the hell are you? I need your help. It turns out that abigail is not going to rest until she finds sarah, and when she does, it means it’s only a matter of time until I lose xander. Please, please, phone me back. Phone me back.

[Knocking on door] Coming.

[Gasps] Sarah?

Sarah: In the flesh.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Steve: You’re right. It has been a while. So, how have you been?

Kristen: Oh… well, I’ve been a little rankled, truth be told. So, I think it would be a very good idea if you try hard not to irritate me anymore than you already have.

Steve: Is it okay if I sit down?

Kristen: No. Instead of worrying about sister mary elizabeth’s safety, you should really be careful yourself.

Steve: I can see that now.

Kristen: Wow. [Laughs] Xander really wasted his money.

Steve: Xander?

Kristen: Mm-hmm.

Steve: What’s he got to do with this?

Kristen: He hired you to find me…

Steve: [Scoffs]

Kristen: And sadly, the only thing that anyone’s gonna find is a dead one-eyed priest.

Steve: No, no, no, no. Hang on, hang on. Xander did not hire me. So, you see, this is all one big misunderstanding.

Kristen: Huh.

Xander: So, you’re saying you do remember her?

Ned: No, I said she’s pretty. Look, I–I’ve flown so many people over the years. Just after a while, they turn into blurs.

Abigail: Okay, ned, well, allow me to de-blur this particular flight for you. It took place last spring, right before you abruptly quit your very lucrative job at dimera without even bothering to pick up your last check.

Ned: How did you–

Xander: How does she know that? That’s a good question. Abigail, you do seem to know rather a lot of information about this guy.

Abigail: Well, I do happen to be an investigative reporter, and coincidentally–well, coincidentally, my husband happens to be the ceo of dimera. So, I don’t have a lot of information, sort of just scratching the surface, but even though I haven’t begun to dig deeply, I do know I can find out everything there is to know about this particular flight, including who financed it and who profited.

Xander: Very impressive. So, um, sir, perhaps you’d like to take another look at this photo, and just concentrate a little bit harder this time?

Ned: Can I get a drink?

Xander: You’re not flying in the next eight hours, are you?

Ned: No.

Xander: Name your poison.

Ned: Beer me.

Xander: Waitress, can I get a beer for my mate? Cheers.

Abigail: I’m gonna ask you again, do you recognize that woman?

Ned: Now that I–I think of it, she does look a little familiar.

Gwen: I don’t understand, how–how are you here?

Sarah: Oh, well, I called the front desk and asked for xander cook’s room number. They were really quite accommodating.

Gwen: I–I didn’t–I didn’t mean that.

Sarah: Oh, you meant, how did I get off the desert island that kristen dimera stashed me on when I threatened to tell the cops that she was masquerading as susan banks? Which you already knew, because that’s what kristen was using to blackmail you into helping her escape.

Gwen: Sarah, I–I…

Sarah: I didn’T.

Gwen: What?

Sarah: Sarah horton’s still very much on that island.

Gwen: I–I–I don’t understand.

Sarah: [Chuckles] Sorry, I forgot.

Gwen: What on earth are you doing?

Ava: Relax. Gwen, it’s just me. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Mother superior: If you’re looking for something, all you had to do was ask.

Kayla: Well, I didn’t wanna bother you. I–I was looking for a bible. I’ve misplaced mine.

Mother superior: Well, isn’t that, uh, bible right there in front of you?

Kayla: Oh! So it is.

[Chuckles] My husband always tells me i need to get glasses, I’m so nearsighted.

Mother superior: Your husband?

Kristen: Don’t be cute, and don’t lie to me.

Steve: Well, guess the cute thing is out of my control, but I’m not lying. I’m not working for xander. He did try to hire me, but not to find you. He wanted me to track down sarah horton.

Kristen: The runaway bride?

Steve: Yeah. Unless you think that my finding her would lead to you.

[Tense music]

Nicole: What is it look like I’m doing? I’m trying to get this conference table out of here. I don’t even think you and i could get it out of here. You know what, I don’t even think the buccaneers offensive line could get it out of here.

[Grunts, sighs] And as you could imagine, it reminds me of something that i don’t–I don’t wanna remember. Something that should have never happened.

Rafe: I get it.

Nicole: Speaking of things that shouldn’t happen, what are you doing here?

Ava: You got any, uh, oh, lotion? This thing kinda chafed my neck.

Gwen: What in the actual hell? Ava, what is going on here?

Ava: [Chuckles] It was pretty mean, I know, I’m sorry. I just–I couldn’t resist. You should’ve seen your face.

[Mimics explosion]

Gwen: What is that thing?

Ava: Isn’t it obvious? It’s a sarah mask. Yeah, kristen sent it to me this morning.

Gwen: Why on earth would she send you that thing?

Ava: Well, she called me the other day, and apparently steve is looking for her, and she wanted to know if I sicced him on her.

Gwen: Steve’s found her?

Ava: No, no, no, no, and he won’t, not if kristen has anything to say about it.

Gwen: Okay, I still–I still don’t understand, why would kristen send you that mask?

Ava: Well, I–I told her that I had nothing to do with steve looking for her and that you and I do not want her found anymore than she wants to be found.

Gwen: [Sighs] Yeah, well, i would say that that’s obvious.

Ava: And I did end up admitting that xander had gone to steve.

Gwen: Yeah, but steve turned xander down. I told you that.

Ava: Maybe he changed his mind. Who knows. Anyway, I also told kristen that you were freaking out, because xander’s looking for sarah, and since we helped her break out of jail, she decided to return the favor and help us out.

Gwen: Not to mention the fact that she doesn’t want sarah found.

Ava: Yeah, well–[Chuckles]– That’s our kristen, isn’t it? Anyway, this showed up at my door. I think it’s the answer to your prayers.

[Ominous music]

Xander: Better?

Ned: [Exhales] Hits the spot.

Xander: You say you recognize this woman? That’s ’cause she’s the person that you flew out of town on the dimera jet.

Ned: I suppose it’s possible.

Abigail: No one has heard from this woman in nearly a year, so we’re going to need a little more than it’s possible. Surely you have some recollection of who was on that flight.

Xander: Hey, she’s in trouble, big trouble, and we– we have to help her. Did you fly this woman or not?

Ned: Yeah. I did.

[Dramatic music]

My asthma felt anything but normal.

Rafe: Listen, I don’t mean to bother you, okay? It’s just that something has come up at work.

Nicole: Oh, so, you wanna talk to me about police business? Shouldn’t you be talking to, I don’t know, this is just off the top of my head, but another cop?

Rafe: Uh, no, because it actually involves you.

Nicole: Me? What? How? Why?

Rafe: The other day, trask came to me with two different files, okay? Two different files that had the exact same complaint that I had planted evidence to make an arrest, and I think that there is more than a good chance that someone put them up to it.

Nicole: Damn it, rafe, i would never do that to you.

Rafe: No, I didn’t say you. I don’t think that it was you.

Nicole: Okay, but you said it had something to do with me.

Rafe: Yes, I did, because i think it was ava… because of us.

[Solemn music]

Ava: It’s pretty good, right?

Gwen: It’s a bit creepy. Uh…how is this supposed to be the answer to my prayers?

Ava: Well, kristen put a note in with the mask. And first, I need you to know that there were some pretty intense threats about what would happen to us if, uh, she was found.

Gwen: Why? We–we–we–we don’t want anybody to find sarah.

Ava: Yeah, that’s just kristen being kristen. You know, a letters not a letter without some threats. Anyway, she sent it so you could use it to get xander to stop looking for sarah.

Gwen: Me?

Ava: Yeah. Who else? You put the mask on, you go to xander, you tell him that you, sarah, don’t want anything to do with him anymore, and he needs to stop looking for you, and then bing, bang, boom, problem solved. He never wants to lay eyes on sarah again.

Abigail: So, sarah hired you to fly her on a dimera jet?

Ned: She approached me at the hangar, said she heard some of us pilots took on freelance gigs from time to time. She needed somebody to fly her out of salem.

Abigail: On a dimera jet?

Ned: Uh, I’m not the only one who does it, mrs. Dimera.

Abigail: I’m here for “the spectator,” not dimera enterprises. And so, you agreed?

Ned: I said I would do it for the right price. She definitely had the money. I can see how much she must have spent on her clothes.

Abigail: Are you an expert in couture?

Ned: Uh, no, luggage. I saw the size of the suitcase she had. I have never seen such a tiny woman with such a big suitcase.

Xander: Forget the luggage. Where’d you take her?

Ned: Can’t tell you that.

Xander: Why not?

Ned: It’s part of the deal. Look, I didn’t have to tell you that I flew her in the first place. I did it ’cause you said that she might be in danger.

Xander: She is, and if you don’t tell us where she is, we can’t help her.

Ned: Sorry I can’t be more forthcoming. But I get paid to be discreet. But I could also get paid to be indiscreet. So, if you wanna know where i took her, have to cough up some cash. And I don’t take checks.

[Soft instrumental music]

Kristen: If you were looking for sarah, there’s no way that would lead you to me.

Steve: Although, you know how they say that all roads lead to rome? In the past, a whole lot of mysterious disappearances have led to you.

Kristen: Oh, please. Use your head. Sarah went through hell, and she still gave me my baby back. Heck, we’re almost like sisters. So, why would I wanna disappear sarah horton?

Steve: God only knows why you do anything.

Kristen: Wow. May I remind you I have a gun?

Steve: Okay, that hasn’t slipped my mind, okay, but now that we have cleared up that I’m not working for xander, he’s not looking for you, why don’t you put the damn thing down?

Kristen: Because I still want answers, and if you are not working on xander’s behalf, then why are you here, hm? There’s not exactly a roman holiday for you and the misses to dress as clergy and her cloistered and you sleeping single in a double bed. No, I think–I think that you came here to flush me out of the convent, my spiritual home.

Steve: Your spiritual home when you’re facing prison time.

Kristen: Wow. Again, the gun, hm?

[Tense music]

Who paid you to come after me?

Steve: [Sighs]

Kristen: I mean it.

Steve: Brady.

Kristen: Why in the name of god would brady do that?

Steve: Because he wants to know if you’re the one who framed him for philip’s disappearance.

Kayla: Uh, did I say husband? I did, didn’t I? Did I say husband?

Mother superior: Yes, you did. I know some would say we’re a liberal order, but we still draw the line at husbands.

Kayla: I can explain.

Mother superior: I’m all ears.

Kayla: Um, you see, I–I come from a–a very strong irish-american family, and we take the teachings of the church quite literally. So, as I am a bride of christ, that would make him my husband, wouldn’t it?

Mother superior: A husband who nags you about glasses?

Kayla: Well, he talks to me about all my problems. He’s sort of like–like–like joan of arc.

Mother superior: And look how she ended up.

Kayla: A saint. She ended up a saint.

Mother superior: Uh, what we all aspire to. So, take the bible.

Kayla: Thank you, reverend mother.

Mother superior: And one last question, how are you going to read it given that you’re so nearsighted that you didn’t see it right there in front of you?

Kayla: Uh, well, I don’t–i don’t need to read it. I–I find comfort in its physical presence.

Mother superior: If it means that much to you, you–you must have–have all the important passages memorized.

Kayla: A lot of them, yeah.

Mother superior: Then how about you recite one for me?

Kayla: Um, I would be happy to, but I’m not sure I have them verbatim, and you shouldn’t improvise the word of god, should you?

Mother superior: Well, it’s all in translation, unless you memorized it in the original hebrew or aramaic.

Kayla: No, I never–never got the time for that.

[Chuckles]

Mother superior: So, just give it your best shot. [Laughs] I’m sure he’ll forgive you if you stumble over a word or two. He did say, “judge not lest he be judged.” Matthew 7, one through three.

Kayla: Um, well, uh, the christmas story’s always been one of my favorites. And, um, it came to pass that–

Mother superior: Lovely of course, but not, I feel, relevant to your situation. How about deuteronomy 31, 6? How does that go again?

Kayla: [Chuckles]

Kristen: You’re telling me that someone made it look like brady killed philip?

Steve: And they think that someone is you.

Kristen: Why would I do something like that to brady? He’s rachel’s father.

Steve: Yes, he’s also the man you loved who had the temerity to choose chloe over you.

Kristen: Uh, so what, to that end, I–I knocked him out and covered him in blood and then i left a weapon at the crime scene?

Steve: Uh, you have to admit, your plans, uh, tend to be a little serpentine.

Kristen: Right, but they’re always in my best interest. There’s no way I would ever send brady to prison for murder. I love him.

Steve: So, you’re telling me you don’t wanna get back at him and chloe for whatever it is you think they’re doing?

Kristen: I’ll admit it bothered me. Once again, that cow had her talons in him.

Steve: Mixed metaphors.

Kristen: Mm. And I wouldn’t have thought twice about framing chloe. But if you think I’d ever send brady to prison, then you don’t know me at all.

Steve: So, you didn’t kill philip?

Kristen: No, I did not kill philip.

Steve: All right then. No harm, no foul. I’ll report back to brady that this was a dead end and that we’re even. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Kristen: It’s a little late for that, don’t you think?

[Tense music]

Nicole: Don’t you think you’re being a little paranoid here thinking that ava is setting you up? We both know how much she loves you.

Rafe: She loved steve too. Look how that turned out.

Nicole: Is there something you’re not telling me?

Rafe: No, no, no, I have– there’s nothing concrete. It’s just I–I get this weird feeling that something is off.

Nicole: Well, I’d say framing you as a dirty cop is a little more than just off.

Rafe: Okay, nicole, think about–I mean, think about it, ava, she’s–she’s got the underworld connections to make it all happen, and I’ve–I’ve had this feeling before. I had this exact same feeling when I thought that she had decapitated duke.

Rafe: Wait, you think ava did that? No, come on, that–that doesn’t make any sense.

Rafe: Unless…

Nicole: Unless what?

Rafe: Unless she knows what we did on that table.

[Dramatic music]

Ava: So? You’re just gonna stare at it or what?

Gwen: I–I’m just–I’m a bit stunned by the likeness.

Ava: Yeah. It’s impressive as hell, i agree. The ghost of xander’s girlfriend past.

[Chuckles] And the idea that one of those could be made into any one of our faces. Oh, god, I would love, love to get my hands on a nicole mask and then just tell rafe that he is a two-timing jerk and, you know, he can go straight to hell.

Gwen: Okay, can we just stay on topic here? ‘Cause, I mean, what–what– what–what would you have me do with this thing?

Ava: I thought it was obvious. I’d have you wear it.

Gwen: [Sighs] And, I mean, you just wear it and–and I just, what, sort of breathe normally?

Ava: Oh, yeah, yeah. There were no breathing issues. There were no issues at all. Just–just the fun of making mischief.

Gwen: Making mischief?

Ava: Mm.

Gwen: Well, I’d say that that’s a slight understatement with what we are considering doing, don’t you?

Ava: Okay, gwen, do you want xander to leave you? Do you relish the thought of him telling you that, “hey, you know what, I’ve enjoyed your company, and, uh, thank you for the memories,” but you know his true love, the one that, uh–who’s a knockout, has a great career, that perfect bod, she’s back, so, buh-bye and have a nice life. I did not think so. But if, you know–if you’re feeling like you got stage freight and you can’t pull it off, well, then–then don’t worry about it.

Gwen: I didn’t say that.

Ava: Well, you seem awfully skeptical.

Gwen: I’m just–I’m lacking a bit of confidence. You–you really think that I can fool xander?

Ava: Ah, sweetie… there’s only one way to find out. And that is not by sitting around shooting the breeze. Come on, put the damn thing on already? What are you waiting for?

Gwen: [Sighs]

Xander: So, what are you waiting for? Pay the man.

Abigail: Me? Why me?

Xander: You have money. I don’T.

Abigail: [Sighs] Xander, I can’t do it.

Xander: Why? Did chad put you on an allowance or something?

Abigail: No, I’m a journalist. I represent “the spectator.” I can’t pay a source for information. It’s totally unethical.

Xander: Then don’t run the story. I mean, what do you care more about, selling papers or finding your cousin? My asthma felt anything but normal.

Steve: I don’t think it’s too late at all. I’ll just make it clear to brady that you had nothing to do with this.

Kristen: I’m still a wanted woman who broke out of prison. So what, you’re just going to go waltzing back into salem knowing my location? I mean, really? You’re even dumber than i thought you were.

Kayla: Deuteronomy 31-6. Of course. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified of them. For the lord your god goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Mother superior: You do know your bible.

Kayla: I told you it brings me great comfort.

Mother superior: I’ve always found it to do so. Actually, I–I just came in to get my rosary.

Kayla: Thanks, mom. All the ccd classes really paid off.

Mother superior: I usually keep this drawer locked. Um, thank you for calling my lapse to my attention.

[Tense music]

Nicole: [Groans] You–you think ava knows we slept together.

Rafe: It’s crossed my mind.

Nicole: [Chuckles] Well, wait a minute, this is– this is ava we’re talking about.

Rafe: Yeah.

Nicole: If she found out, she would’ve been in your face. She doesn’t exactly sit on her feelings.

Rafe: No, you’re right. You’re right, and–and when i told her about the perps, she was completely shocked, and she–she was totally–totally behind me.

Nicole: Okay, that’s a good sign.

Rafe: Yeah. Has she been acting strangely, though? She keeps telling me to invite you over for dinner. I–like, has she done anything weird or–or out of the ordinary?

Nicole: No–

Rafe: No?

Nicole: Oh, then now–now that you mention it…

Rafe: What?

Ava: Come on, gwen. Let’s have a look.

[Dynamic music]

Gwen: So? What do you think? Hey, I thought you said I’d sound just like sarah.

Ava: Don’t get your panties in a bunch. Here. Try this.

Sarah: Do you really think that–oh, my god, it works.

Ava: [Chuckles]

Sarah: I mean, this is what sarah sounds like…

Sarah: Right?

Ava: Exactly. Exactly. So, now you look perfect. You sound perfect. Oh, xander’s gonna be completely taken in.

Sarah: I don’t know, I–I’m not so sure.

Ava: Well, I fooled you, didn’t I?

Sarah: Yeah, but I don’t know sarah. Xander knows everything about her.

Ava: So did rex, and kristen fooled them both.

Sarah: Yeah, but kristen knows sarah. I’m flying blind here. I don’t think I can fool anyone, let alone xander.

Ava: [Mumbles] Maybe you need to take a test run.

Abigail: This is not about selling papers. I–whether I run this story or not, I can’t give a source money.

Xander: Are you serious? You’re gonna let our only lead on sarah slip through your fingers, because what, it’s unethical?

Abigail: Okay, first of all, I’m not really sure how reliable this lead is…

Ned: Hey.

Abigail: Um, and second of all, I–it’s not about ethics. If anybody found out that I paid for information, whether I run the story or not, it could totally compromise “the spectator.” My folks left me in charge of the paper, and last thing i wanna do is run it into the ground just a few weeks after they’ve left town.

Xander: We both know I don’t have the money.

Ned: Okay, well, thanks for the beer.

Xander: Oh, no, no, yeah, you, uh–I’ll get it. I’ll, uh–I’ll get the money. You just keep him here.

Abigail: Where are you going?

Xander: To the first national bank of kiriakis.

[Solemn music]

It’s my 4:05, the-show-must-go-on,

Maggie: Mmm. Henderson, I love this tea! What is it?

Sarah: I don’t know. I’m not henderson.

Maggie: Oh, my god. Sarah?

[Gasps]

Sarah: [Chuckles]

Maggie: I can’t believe– I can’t believe it’s you.

Steve: If you think that I’ll tell everyone where I found you, then there’s an easy fix.

Kristen: So, finally we both can agree.

Steve: Just move on. Take off. Find a convent in, uh, outer mongolia or somewhere.

Kristen: [Laughs] Mongolia, right. You–you think I should move?

Steve: Kristen, you’ve got safehouses all over the place where you can hide out. And I swear I won’t follow you. I got some zip ties here in this drawer.

Kristen: Hm.

Steve: Okay?

Kristen: Ooh. [Gasps] Are we looking for this? Huh? Yeah, see, I was here before, and that’s the first place i looked. Wow, for a P.I., You are very predictable.

[Tongue clicks] So, now I think it’s time for my easy fix.

Rafe: Nicole… ni–nicole, what is it? Hey, did ava say something to you?

Nicole: No, no. But it’s just like you were saying, I–I just got this weird feeling.

Rafe: When?

Nicole: The other day at the square, I–I saw you and ava together. You were hugging.

Rafe: Wait, you were– I didn’t see you.

Nicole: I know. But I think ava saw me. And she smiled at me, but it wasn’t a friendly smile. It was more knowing, like she was in on a secret. And afterward, I just felt very unsettled.

[Knocking on door]

Ava: Hey, nicole, you busy? I was just thinking that–oh… rafe, what a surprise.

Rafe: Yeah, I was just talking about you.

Ava: Yeah, you know, this is great, because now I don’t have to track you down too.

[Dramatic music]

Maggie: Oh, honey. Do you know what a relief it is to see you?

Sarah: I’m sorry I worried you.

Maggie: Why the radio silence? I mean, all this time we thought you were with rex, but when he showed up and he said you hadn’t left town with him, oh, honey, I mean, that was weeks and weeks ago. Ever since, I’ve been–I’ve been calling. Do you know that your phone is disconnected?

Sarah: I–I know, and I can explain.

Maggie: Okay… I’m listening.

Rafe: Track us down? What is that supposed to mean?

Ava: Well, it means that what I have to say concerns the three of us, and the two of you are so high-powered and important, you don’t answer your phones and you don’t return calls. So, if I want to speak to either one of you, I have to track you down and talk to you face to face. And don’t argue with me about that, because I was just here the other day trying to invite you over for dinner, and I knew then if it was gonna happen at all, I’d practically have to tie you down just to get you to agree to a date.

Nicole: It’s just that I–

Ava: No, no, no, no, no, I know, I know, I know. It’s okay. You’re so busy. I get that from him too, all the time. So, no more arguments, okay? The three of us are having dinner together at casa hernandez tonight.

Nicole: Oh, I–I don’t know, ’cause I–

Sarah: I’m sorry that i wasn’t completely honest with you. I would have told you everything if it hadn’t been for xander.

Maggie: So, you pretended to leave town with rex because of xander?

Sarah: He didn’t leave me a choice. I tried to break off the engagement, but he didn’t believe me.

Maggie: As I see it, you didn’t–you didn’t call off the engagement. You called off the wedding, at almost the last possible moment.

Sarah: Just…I wanted xander out of my life, and I had to make sure that he wouldn’t try to follow me.

Maggie: [Sighs] You were that desperate to get away from him? Why?

Xander: Fair enough. Probably better to stick with reality. So what can I do to help make the dream go away?

Brady: Doesn’t matter? You seem a little flushed. Let me take a stab at this. Were you by chance thinking about the time that you and rafe had sex on that conference table?

Ava: Sorry. I was–bad dream.

Steve: Well, as a matter of fact, while you were sleeping off our sinfully delicious lunch, the mother superior called.

Steve: Yeah. Turns out our prayers have been answered. There’s room at the convent for sister mary elizabeth.

Kayla: That’s great.

Steve: So why don’t you get out of those clothes and into your habit?

Kayla: Yeah. Um…

Steve: Something wrong, baby?

Kayla: I think I just– I just need a moment or two.

[Knock at door]

Brady: Well, she put up a good fight, but I kinda pried it out of her. I’m sorry, okay?

Brady: Marlena’s?

Nicole: Well, the demon was inside of her, technically. When your stepmom was possessed by the devil, she brought deimos back from the dead to terrorize me.

Brady: That was not where I thought this story was going.

Nicole: You think I’m crazy.

Brady: No. Come on, marlena was possessed by the devil twice. At this point, there’s pretty much nothing that i won’t believe. You must have been terrified by that.

Nicole: Well, I-I thought I was losing my mind. So I called rafe, and he came over and he made me feel safe.

Brady: He comforted you.

Nicole: Well, it started out that way. And the next thing I knew, we were on the conference table tearing off each other’s clothes, and… well, you know the rest.

Rafe: You know, you’re not the only one who’s accused me of having something weighing on my conscience.

Ava: Really?

Rafe: Mm-hmm.

Ava: Who else?

Rafe: Well, the da and internal affairs have launched an investigation into my policing practices.

Ava: Okay, that’s crazy. What could they possibly suspect you of?

Rafe: Well, one perp has accused me of planting evidence.

Ava: Well, they’re obviously lying, right?

Rafe: Of course. Yeah. But there’s a second accusation. That perp is claiming that I framed him.

Ava: Okay. Why would all this be coming up right now at the same time? You think it’s a coincidence?

Rafe: Unlikely. No. So either these guys got together and decided that they wanna make me look like a bad cop, or…

Ava: Someone put them up to it.

Rafe: Yeah.

Ava: Yeah.

Rafe: Yeah.

Ava: But who would hate you so much that they would go through all the trouble to ruin your life?

Gwen: What do you want?

Abigail: It’s nice to see you too, gwen.

Abigail: I did. I tracked down our missing person. My plaque psoriasis…

Abigail: No. No. Not yet. But I did find ned grainger.

Gwen: Who is ned grainger?

Xander: He’s the pilot that flew a private jet out of salem the day that sarah disappeared.

Gwen: Xander, sarah didn’t disappear. She left.

Abigail: What’s the difference?

Gwen: The difference is that that sounds like something very nefarious happened to her. So she wanted to be alone. I mean, what sort of crime is being committed?

Abigail: Well, we’ll see what ned says. I’m meeting him at the pub in 30 minutes. So I’m gonna show him sarah’s picture and–

Gwen: Don’t you think that’s a waste of time, darling? I mean, what’s this ned person going to say anyway?

Xander: I’ll put on some clothes. I wanna come with you.

Gwen: Xander.

Xander: Gwen, I-I wanna speak to this pilot myself and make sure he’s telling the truth, okay?

Gwen: [Sighs] You’re really enjoying yourself, aren’t you?

Abigail: Excuse me?

Gwen: Oh, come on. I know exactly what you are doing. You want xander to find sarah so that he will leave me and go be with her.

Rafe: I have some ideas about who might be setting me up.

Ava: Well, because you already accused me of mutilating that teddy bear that you and nicole share custody of, which was very hurtful, quite frankly.

Ava: But I don’t know why I would possibly have any reason to be upset with you or nicole. I mean, you two are the ones I trust most in this world.

Nicole: Rafe and ava are together, and I accept that. And what happened between us was just a one-time thing.

Brady: You don’t have to explain that to me.

Nicole: I just want you to understand that I never meant for this to happen, and it won’t ever happen again, and we agreed to keep our distance.

Steve: If I’m gonna play the part, I have to get prepared. Which brings me to my point. You.

Steve: No, you’re not. Baby, listen, I’m not doubting your bravery or your talents. I know what you’re capable of. But I also know what kristen is capable of.

Kristen: It is. It is. I was just looking at some scripture and saying a prayer for father nichols and sister mary elizabeth.

Mother superior: Aww, how very kind. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.

Kristen: Well, I promise that I will move mountains to accommodate our new sister.

Mother superior: I know you will. Looking to get back in your type 2 diabetes zone?

Ava: I can’t even imagine how upsetting this must be for you. I mean, after all, it’s your reputation at stake.

Rafe: I’m gonna clear my name.

Ava: Yeah. I know you will. I want you to know that no matter what happens, I will always believe in you.

Ava: Yeah. I mean, you believed in me when everyone else questioned my character. When the whole world saw me as a criminal and a thug, you moved me into your house and you made me feel loved. Nothing is more important to me than loyalty.

Rafe: Me neither. You haven’t touched your bear claw.

Ava: Well, I am in the mood for something sweet. But I don’t think that’s gonna satisfy me.

Rafe: Oh, no? What will?

Nicole: You had a sex dream about kristen?

Brady: Whoa, whoa. No, no. My dream was not as friendly as the one that you had about rafe.

Nicole: Oh, so you had a nightmare.

Brady: You could call it that, sure.

Nicole: Well, kristen’s a nightmare in real life. So there’s that.

Brady: Yeah, well, she’s always been my nightmare.

Nicole: Are you thinking about her again after everything she’s done?

Brady: She’s rachel’s mother, nicole, okay? I’m always going to– I’m always gonna love her.

Nicole: But you’re never going back to her again, right?

Brady: No, no. No, those days are over.

Nicole: Are you sure?

Brady: Yeah, I’m sure. I’m pretty certain she had me framed for philip’s murder. So that’s a deal breaker in my book.

Nicole: Well, I’m glad to hear it.

Brady: I even have steve looking for her. And hopefully, we can get to the truth as to what happened to philip.

Nicole: You know, in some way, I wish that she’d be gone forever. But I would like to see her brought to justice for what she did to me, for what she did to you and to philip and everyone else in this town.

Brady: We’ll see.

Nicole: Has steve had any luck tracking her down?

Brady: I talked to him last night, and he’s in italy.

Nicole: Italy?

Brady: Yeah. And he has a lead. So far, he has not found kristen.

Gwen: Yeah, you know, I didn’t believe you then, and I don’t believe you now.

Abigail: Believe what you want. I’m doing it for aunt maggie. She asked me to help her as a journalist. And yes, I do believe that there’s a story there.

Gwen: Really? So you’re, what, you’re doing this for your “journalistic integrity” to plant these seeds of this wild conspiracy into my boyfriend’s head?

Abigail: It’s not a conspiracy theory.

Gwen: Really? Are you saying that sarah was just taken from salem?

Abigail: What if she was?

Gwen: She wasn’t, abigail. She walked out on rex, just like she walked out on xander. She didn’t want anything to have to do with him, and now xander has moved on. But you are pulling him back in. You are dragging him all around bloody town talking to randos and getting him all worked up.

Abigail: Okay. Gwen, I’m sorry if this is inconvenient or upsetting for you. But it just so happens that the circumstances of sarah’s disappearance from salem have left people who care about her with a lot of questions.

Gwen: Questions?

Abigail: Yes, questions. And if you’re so sure she left of her own free will, then what does it matter to you if I find her anyway? She already told xander she doesn’t wanna be with him. Xander’s made it very clear that he does wanna be with you, right? So unless you have a reason to doubt that… it’s my 5:52 woke-up-like-this migraine medicine.

Gwen: Xander loves me. And there’s nothing you or anyone can do to stop that.

Abigail: Fine. I have no interest in changing that.

Gwen: Come on, abigail. Let’s just be honest with each other.

Abigail: Why the hell would i not be honest about this?

Gwen: Because you’re still not over me sleeping with chad.

Abigail: Chad and I are fine.

Mother superior: Father nichols, I appreciate your help in delivering sister mary elizabeth to us, but I’m afraid the time has come for you to leave.

Brady: Yeah, I pretty much accepted the fact that I’m gonna keep having these nightmares about kristen until steve finds her.

Nicole: Well, hopefully he’ll find philip too.

Brady: Hopefully.

Brady: Unfortunately, I don’t see you not having these dreams about rafe anytime soon.

Nicole: Well, the good news is, I’m having trouble falling asleep anyway because of these memories. So no escaping.

Brady: You know you’re gonna have to come to terms with how you’re feeling about rafe sooner or later, right?

Nicole: I tried. I tried to move on with ej.

Nancy: Why haven’t you returned my calls?

Chloe: You came here from new york to ask me that in person?

Nancy: I needed to talk to you.

Chloe: [Sighs] I know. I’m–I’m sorry. I just–I really don’t feel like talking about philip. There’s no news, and it just upsets me. All right?

Nancy: This is not about philip. It’s about your father.

Chloe: My–dad? Dad, what about him?

Nancy: I think he’s having an affair.

Chloe: Mom, I don’t understand.

Nancy: What’s not to understand? You heard me. Your father is cheating on me with another woman.

Lucas: So do i sound rehearsed? Because I feel like it sounds rehearsed.

Kate: Okay, just–

Lucas: I sound rehearsed–

Kate: Just relax. Relax.

Evil ej: From the moment I came back to salem, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.

Abigail: That’s insane. Just get away from me.

Evil ej: I know you’re married to my brother, and I’ve tried hard to push these feelings aside, but it’s impossible.

Abigail: Is this some kind of sick joke? I mean, you have a wife that you are obsessed with. And you were dating nicole.

Evil ej: Only to distract myself. I’ve been using them to try and get you out of my head, but it didn’t work.

Abigail: [Scoffs] You have totally lost it. Just go and get some help, would you?

Evil ej: Abigail, please. I am desperate to get close to you. That’s why I wanted to do johnny’s movie, but it didn’t happen.

Abigail: Will you–can you get out of my way?

Evil ej: How I have longed to ravage you. I never thought I’d get the chance, yet here we are alone, and there’s no time like the present.

Ej: What exactly did chad say to you when you ran into him just now?

Belle: Just that we would be pleased with the outcome of his testimony.

Ej: But he’s the chief material witness against me, and if I’m acquitted, he has to relinquish sole control of the company.

Belle: Both things are true.

Ej: Do you really think he’s on my side? The man used trumped-up evidence to get me ousted from dimera.

Belle: I don’t know. Maybe he realizes he took things too far. He is still your brother, ej. And despite all the bad blood, I think he’s gonna come through for you today.

Abigail: [Gasps]

Chad: What the hell are you doing?

Abigail: Get the hell away from me, you filthy pig!

[Soft orchestration]

Lucas: Excuse me.

Kate: Do you have a warrant to eavesdrop on our conversation, trask?

Melinda: You were talking freely in the middle of the hallway. Something about a frame-up?

Kate: Mm. Well, if you have to know, my son and I were discussing ej’s insistence that he was framed.

Melinda: What about it?

Kate: I think it’s baseless. Really the act of a desperate man.

Melinda: I happen to agree, and hopefully, lucas, you’ll help put ej dimera away for a very long time.

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah. That is the plan.

Melinda: I do wish sami were joining you in testifying.

Kate: Well, you have her deposition, right?

Melinda: Yes, but that’s not nearly as convincing as an in-person testimony would be.

Kate: Hm.

Lucas: You can’t really blame her for not wanting to be in the same room as the guy who kidnapped her, right?

Kate: Right, if I were sami, I would avoid contact at all costs.

Ej: I appreciate your optimism, belle, but let’s just say chad has had a change of heart. Would he really tell the truth on the witness stand?

Belle: You mean would he admit to framing you?

Ej: He could go to jail for that.

Belle: I don’t know. He was about to drop some big bombshell, right before his whole coughing fit, so–

Ej: You think that was his conscience bubbling up in his chest?

Belle: I don’t know what it was, but I’ve known chad a long time, and I think he’s a fundamentally good guy.

Ej: Are you implying I’m not?

Belle: All I’m saying is that, if you are innocent, and chad knows it, I think he’d have a really hard time lying on the stand.

Ej: Hm.

Abigail: You son of a bitch!

Chad: What do you think you’re doing kissing my wife against her will, huh?

Evil ej: How do you know it was against her will?

Abigail: What are you insinuating, you freak? It was more than against my will; it was an attack.

Chad: Listen, you want to come against me? Huh? You leave her out of it. You understand?

Evil ej: Not everything is about you, chad. You see, the truth is I could be going away for a lot of years, and I didn’t want to do that without feeling abigail’s sweet lips against mine, one more time.

Abigail: Stop–no, please. The bailiff’s right outside, and he is not worth it.

Chad: You’re right.

Evil ej: Well, I guess I’ll see you in court. Thanks for the kiss, abigail. I’ll treasure the memory… mm. Always.

[Tense music]

Melinda: I can’t imagine. Is she doing well?

Lucas: Yeah, yeah. She’s doing okay, considering, you know, what she’s been through. Sure, sure.

Johnny: That ought to get chad back on board. Now, he’s just dying to send his brother dearest to jail for a very long time. It’s my 3:10, no-exit-in-sight,

Chloe: Here you go.

Nancy: Thank you, sweetheart. Look, my hands are shaking.

Chloe: It’s okay, mom. Just take a deep breath, okay?

Brady: Yeah. Now–now, tell us, why do you think craig is having an affair?

Nancy: Well, first of all, he’s–he’s been staying late at the hospital now, for months.

Chloe: Yeah, but that’s not new. He’s been doing that for as long as I can remember.

Nancy: Not three times a week. Anyway, at first, I kind of thought maybe he was getting bored with me, which was hurtful enough until, when he came home from the medical conference in dallas, I found condoms in his briefcase.

Chloe: Uh, ew, mom. Okay. Ugh. I’m sorry, but did you confront him about it?

Nancy: I did. Oh, and he was so angry for me snooping, of course. But before he stormed out, he said, “they were giving away condoms at the safe sex seminar.” Part of a swag bag or whatever.

Brady: I suppose that’s– that’s possible, right?

Nancy: I–I just don’t know. Sweetheart, please be honest with me. Have you noticed your father behaving differently lately? I mean, has he said anything to you?

Chloe: Honestly, I haven’t really talked to him in a few weeks.

Nancy: Well, now that’s not right either, especially with everything you’re going through with philip.

[Sighs]

Chloe: No. It’s–it’s okay. Have you talked to joy about this?

Nancy: No. And I don’t want her to know. Grad school is hard enough. Obviously, um, parker’s in boarding school, so he has no idea, and–

Chloe: It’s–it’s okay. I won’t say anything to them, but, I don’t know, I just kind of find this hard to believe. I mean, you and dad have the best marriage I’ve ever seen, since forever.

Nancy: I used to think so too, but now I don’t know.

[Sighs]

Brady: Nancy, do you– do you have any other reason to suspect him?

Chloe: Mom?

Nancy: Well, I hate to admit it, but… I logged on to his credit card account, just to see if there were any suspicious purchases. I mean, I felt so sneaky. I mean, after snooping in his briefcase, but–

Brady: Did you find anything?

Nancy: It depends on whether you think $500 restaurant bills are normal business expenses.

Chloe: Um, well– well, where is he now?

Nancy: He’s in dallas, at another conference. I should have just confronted him before he got on the plane. In fact, I’m gonna go do it now.

Chloe: You want to fly to texas?

Nancy: I’ve got to know the truth, even if I end up in the middle of “craig wesley does dallas.” Oh, my god, why am i making stupid, lewd jokes? I guess because being serious is just too painful. I’m gonna let you two know how it goes.

Brady: Nancy, wait. I think you’d be making a big mistake.

Melinda: The judge should be calling us back any minute. Once I’m done with chad, you’ll be my next witness. Are you ready?

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah, I’m ready.

Melinda: You seem nervous. I can count on you to stay cool up there, right?

Lucas: Yeah. I’ll be fine. Really.

Kate: He’ll be fine. Really.

Lucas: What, was that completely necessary?

Kate: Was what necessary?

Lucas: Will you give it a break, okay? I saw the way you looked at me. I’m not gonna hurt sami. I would never do that.

Johnny: Are we talking about my mother?

Kate: Where the hell did you come from?

Johnny: Maybe I’ve been here all along. I hope you’re taking good care of my mom.

Kate: [Sighs] From my experience with sami, she doesn’t need anyone to take care of her.

Johnny: But still. Everything that poor woman has been through. I can’t imagine the terror of being kidnapped and then finding out that it was by somebody you loved, allegedly.

Lucas: Uh, nothing alleged about it.

Johnny: Well, my father says that he’s innocent, and I believe him. Anyway, I’m just so relieved to know that she’s safe and that she’s got you looking out for her.

[Tense music]

Gabi: I can’t believe ej is signing his shares of dimera over to johnny.

Jake: I guess he figures, if he’s going away, might as well give his shares to his son.

Gabi: Yeah, but johnny’s never been interested in dimera. He’s always wanted to be a filmmaker.

Jake: Right, but his film didn’t get made, thanks to a little devilish intervention. Everybody’s got to have a plan b, right?

Gabi: He is ej’s son.

Jake: Dimera after all.

Gabi: It just doesn’t make sense for ej to just give up.

Jake: Huh. Well, maybe he figures he’s going away for sure.

Gabi: Maybe his plan is to control johnny from prison. I mean, he’ll be behind bars, but he’ll still be pulling the strings.

Jake: I don’t know. I wouldn’t be so sure about that, because I talked to shin; according to the legal department, this whole thing was johnny’s idea.

Johnny: Hey, pops.

Ej: There you are. I was wondering where you’d gotten to.

Johnny: Sorry, I uh– I suddenly became very thirsty, and I wanted to make sure I got it taken care of before the trial resumed.

Ej: It’s good to see you.

Chad: Hey, hey. Are you okay?

Abigail: I’m fine. I’m just– I feel rattled. I’m– I was about to knee him in the groin when you came in.

Chad: I would have liked to have seen that.

Abigail: But I just don’t get it; why would he just come on to me, out of the blue like that?

Chad: He’s just trying to stir things up.

Abigail: But for what purpose? He’s been obsessed with sami ever since he got to salem. I mean, he’s loving her, and he’s hating her, and he’s loving her again, and–

Chad: Okay. Shh. Shh. It’s just he hates her again.

Abigail: But his future is in your hands. Why would he practically attack me when you are getting ready to take the stand?

Chad: Honestly, I don’t know, and I don’t care, okay? As long as he’s gone. Prison is too good for that son of a bitch.

Brady: Before you go off and do something you might regret, I want to share something that happened between chloe and me recently.

Chloe: Brady–

Nancy: What is it?

Brady: Well, before philip disappeared, he was convinced that chloe was cheating on him with me.

Nancy: Were you?

Chloe: No. Of course not.

Brady: And we tried to get philip to believe us, but he wouldn’T. We ended up going on a business trip. He followed us, and he burst into our motel room.

Nancy: Your motel room? Singular?

Brady: It was– it was the only room available. It was completely innocent.

Chloe: Yeah. I tried to get philip to see that, but he didn’t believe me. And then his jealousy just got so out of hand that I had to take a step back from him.

Nancy: Are you saying that I’m being irrationally jealous?

Brady: No, what we’re saying is I think you should be absolutely certain before doing something rash. Things aren’t always what they appear.

Gabi: All right, let’s just say johnny found a way to get his dad to sign over his company’s shares. He’s probably doing it to help ej out.

Jake: Mm, you know better than I do.

Gabi: I’ve known johnny since he was a kid. He may be an artist, but he worships ej. He’s gonna vote whatever way ej tells him.

Jake: Maybe.

Gabi: What does that mean?

Jake: It’s just that last time we held a vote at dimera, johnny was too young to vote his shares. Now he’s old enough, okay, that’s– that’s pretty heavy stuff.

Gabi: What, you think he’s trying to make a play on his own?

Jake: I’m just saying. His shares coupled with ej’s shares, it’s a pretty powerful voting bloc. Could do a lot of damage.

Gabi: It could also stop our plan in its tracks.

Jake: Yes, but– okay, hear me out. If johnny really is ej’s mini me, he’s all ambition, no scruples.

Gabi: Which could make him corruptible.

Jake: And an excellent ally for our cause. Hm?

Judge: Please be seated.

[Tense music]

Ej: What’s that about?

Belle: You tell me.

Judge: Mr. Dimera. I trust you’re feeling better.

Chad: Yes, your honor.

Judge: Good, and I remind you, you’re still under oath. Try not to choke this time.

Chad: Yes, your honor.

Judge: Before your dramatic coughing display, you were sharing details about how the defendant’s financial transactions came to light.

Chad: Yes. A few days before the kidnapping, a transaction was made from a private dimera account. An account that only three executives have access to. Me, kate roberts, and my brother. There is no doubt in my mind that my brother is as guilty as sin, and if I were you, I would lock him up and throw away the key.

[Dramatic music]

My asthma felt anything but normal.

Belle: Chad! I mean, mr. Dimera, you just told me–

Melinda: I’m sorry. Are you saying that counsel had an ex parte conversation with my witness?

Judge: Ms. Brady?

Belle: No, your honor.

[Clears throat] No further questions.

Judge: Ms. Trask, you wish to redirect?

Melinda: I don’t, your honor.

Judge: All right. Mr. Dimera, you may step down. We’ll take another brief recess and back with the prosecution’s next witness.

Bailiff: All rise.

[Tense music]

Johnny: Hey, what do you think you’re doing? You probably just sent my dad to prison for a decade. How can you call yourself a dimera, you traitor?

Chad: Why don’t you ask your father that question, after what he did to my wife.

Ej: What the hell are you talking about?

Chloe: Look, mom, I know that dad loves you. He really does, and you guys have such a great connection. You may be hurting right now, but I think that brady’s right. I think it would be a mistake to go confront dad if you’re not even sure that there is a problem.

Nancy: Yeah. I get what you’re saying, and I’m sorry, sweetheart, I– I know craig is your father, and you’re just being protective of him, and, well, I shouldn’t have involved you in this.

Chloe: No, no. You needed to talk about it, okay?

Nancy: Thank you, sweetheart, but I shouldn’t have dumped this mess in your lap, especially with everything you’ve gone through with philip.

Chloe: I’m fine, mom.

Nancy: Well, I just want you to know that, no matter what, I’m still here for you. And obviously brady is too.

Brady: Why’d you say it like that?

Nancy: Like what?

Brady: Nothing. I’m sorry. Nothing.

Nancy: No, no. What?

Brady: Well, it sounded like you were accusing us of a little something.

Nancy: No, no. No, I wasn’T.

Chloe: Just say it, mom.

Nancy: Well, I know you both said that you told philip that nothing was going on between you two, but from the looks of things, I can’t help wondering.

Chloe: Wondering what?

Nancy: If it’s just a matter of time before you guys get together again?

Chad: Don’T. Don’t you play innocent, you understand me? You know what you did.

Ej: What is this about?

Chad: Abby, let’s go. We don’t need to hear the verdict. We’ll see you in ten years– or never. Yeah. Never sounds good.

Ej: What the hell was that?

Johnny: Who knows? I guess chad just wanted you out of the way, like he always has.

Ej: He acted like I did something awful to him– to abigail, actually, and recently.

Johnny: Hasn’t that always been his mo? Paint you out as the villain, so he can play good guy.

Ej: I suppose so.

Johnny: Look, it’s a good thing that you signed your shares over to me. That way, I can protect the company. Which reminds me, I should probably get these documents over to the dimera lawyers to finalize the power of attorney transfer.

Ej: You’re leaving?

Belle: Now? Why? What’s the hurry?

Johnny: The sooner we make this official, the less damage chad can do. This hearing just proved that we can’t trust him.

Belle: Ej, listen, I am– I am so sorry I got your hopes up about chad’s testimony. I really thought that–

Ej: I know what you thought.

Belle: Listen, I don’t understand what happened up there. I really thought he was going to exonerate you.

Lucas: So much for chad clearing ej’s name.

Kate: [Sighs] Yeah. Well, obviously he did change his mind, but why?

Lucas: Oh, I don’t know. I don’t care. You’re not gonna hear me complaining about it. But now that that’s all over, you can go.

Kate: Why?

Lucas: What do you mean why? Trask is gonna call me to the stand next. I don’t want your beady eyes boring into me when I’m testifying.

Kate: Oh, really? Really? Or do you just not want me watching you while you lie up there?

Lucas: No, I don’t want you to see that.

Kate: No. That’s fine. I mostly came to support chad anyway.

Lucas: That’s all right. That’s what I thought.

Kate: You know I love you, no matter how much you mess up, all right? And good luck. Don’t leave town without telling me first.

Judge: Be seated. Ms. Trask, please call your next witness.

Melinda: The state calls lucas horton to the stand.

[Tense music]

Bailiff: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you god?

Lucas: I do. I’ve got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Chloe: Mom, there is nothing going on between me and brady.

Brady: Nothing at all. We’re just good friends.

Chloe: And we’re coworkers, so we spend a lot of time together.

Brady: Exactly.

Nancy: So you’re not living together?

Both: No.

Chloe: Why would you ask that?

Nancy: Well, if I leave your father, I’m gonna need someplace to stay. Will it be all right if I crash at your place?

Chloe: Okay, uh, let’s just take this one step at a time, all right?

Lucas: Yes. That’s him.

Melinda: Let the record show that mr. Horton has positively identified jason smith as the man that was holding ms. Dimera captive at the time that he found her. The same jason smith that was the recipient of cash payments from dimera enterprises, as per chad dimera’s testimony and accompanying evidence in the record.

Judge: Noted.

Melinda: Thank you. No further questions, your honor.

Judge: Thank you. Your witness, ms. Brady.

Belle: Mr. Horton, did jason smith ever state to you that he was hired by my client to kidnap sami dimera?

Lucas: No.

Belle: Hm. Did he imply it?

Lucas: No, we never discuss–

Belle: So you have no direct knowledge that my client had anything to do with the kidnapping of sami dimera.

Lucas: Direct knowledge? No. I suppose not.

Belle: You suppose not. Frankly, mr. Horton, I don’t know what you’re doing here.

Melinda: Objection!

Belle: Withdrawn. But since you are here, I’ll just ask you this. How do we know you didn’t kidnap sami dimera?

Abigail: I just can’t get over how dumb ej was to make that stupid, disgusting pass at me. I mean, here you were all set to let him off the hook.

Chad: He didn’t know that.

Abigail: But you hinted it to belle. Why would he antagonize you, right before you take the stand?

Chad: I–who knows why my– why my brother does anything? My wife’s the hottest woman on the planet. Maybe he just couldn’t help himself. Hm?

Abigail: What exactly were you planning to say today?

Chad: What difference does it make?

Abigail: I know you didn’t want me to know about it in advance, but I want to know now.

Chad: Why?

Abigail: Ej’s not innocent, is he?

Chad: Ej? Ej is anything but innocent.

Jake: You said you’ve known johnny since he was a little kid, right?

Gabi: That’s right.

Jake: Maybe you can help him see the benefit of joining team jabriela.

[Both laugh]

Gabi: I don’t think he’s gonna like that name.

Jake: But he is gonna like what we can offer him. A chance to get out from his father’s shadow, real power.

Gabi: We could consolidate his votes and ej’s with ours.

Jake: We’ll be running dimera in no time.

Gabi: You are good at this.

Jake: No, no, no. We are good at this, and if we got the kid on our side, we’d be unstoppable.

Gabi: We just have to figure out a way to make johnny see things our way.

Johnny: It sounds like somebody’s taking my name in vain.

[Tense music]

Honestly, I thought I was getting my floors cleaned.

Nancy: So you don’t think I should fly to dallas and confront your father? What, I should just sit at home and knit him a sweater and pretend like everything is hunky-dory?

Chloe: No. Of course not. But I think that maybe you should first start by splashing some cold water on your face, and we’ll order something to eat and come up with a plan.

Nancy: This isn’t your responsibility.

Chloe: I love you, mom, and I love dad, and I’ll do whatever it takes to help this work out.

Nancy: Thank you, sweetheart. Now, would you get me something to drink, a little stronger than tea please?

Chloe: [Chuckles] You got it.

Brady: You okay?

Chloe: I don’t–I don’t know. I mean, I guess I’m just a little thrown.

Brady: Yeah.

Chloe: I mean, craig and nancy have always been known for their bickering, but I always felt like they were truly in love.

Brady: Yeah. Like my dad and marlena, the ultimate happy couple. Heck, they beat the devil– twice.

Chloe: I guess every marriage has bumps in the road.

Brady: Yeah. Let’s hope that’s all this is.

Chloe: Well, I guess there’s only one way to find out.

Johnny: If you’re gonna be talking about me behind my back, we should at least be properly introduced.

Gabi: Oh, I know you very well, johnny.

Johnny: But he doesn’T. As you’ve probably heard, I’m a man of wealth and taste. Johnny dimera, your nephew.

Jake: Ah, guess that makes me uncle jake.

Johnny: I can’t believe we haven’t met before now.

Jake: Yeah, well, I wasn’t really running with the dimera inner circle.

Johnny: And I haven’t seen you since I was running around in an eyepatch and your brother’s police vest.

Gabi: Now you’re all grown up.

Johnny: You’ve done some growing up yourself. So now that the introductions are all out of the way, why don’t you fill me in on what you were talking about?

Jake: [Laughs] You know, you’re not the only johnny in town, pal.

Johnny: No, but I’m the only one that matters to you. Let me guess. Shin told you that my father was giving me power of attorney to vote his shares.

Jake: Wow. Kid’s psychic.

Johnny: I just know what makes news, although I’m not quite sure how it concerns you, considering you’re no longer an employee of dimera.

Gabi: Oh, johnny. See, that’s where you’re wrong. We may not be employees, but jake still holds shares of dimera stock.

Jake: Yes, and gabi still holds your late uncle stefan’s shares, which means we still have a voice at the company.

Gabi: And we were thinking–

Jake: That it’s very possible our interests could align.

Chad: Ej’s lucky I didn’t tell the judge what he did to you today. They would have charged him with sexual assault. And with his history, they would have added years to his sentence.

Abigail: Yeah.

Chad: What? What’s wrong?

Abigail: I just–I cannot stop hearing ej say how he wanted to take me on the conference table. It didn’t even sound like–

Chad: Wait, what, he– he said that to you? Why didn’t you tell me?

Abigail: Because I knew you would kill him on the spot.

Chad: Yeah, he would have deserved it.

Abigail: It just all came so out of the blue. He came in, I thought he wanted to talk about the case, and then–

Chad: I swear to god, if they don’t lock him up for a very long time–

Abigail: After your testimony, they will.

Chad: Let’s just hope that neither one of us have to deal with him ever again.

Abigail: [Sighs] I think I’m gonna go upstairs, and I’m gonna check on the kids, and I’m gonna take a shower.

Chad: How would you feel if I joined you?

Abigail: I’d feel pretty good about that.

Kate: Well, I’m here because I wanted to know what happened to you up there on the stand. I thought you were going to ride to ej’s rescue.

Chad: That was before I walked in on him with his tongue down abigail’s throat.

Lucas: I had nothing to do with sami’s kidnapping. And you sound as desperate as your client. Grasping at straws, blaming everyone under the sun.

Belle: I’m only asking you.

Lucas: And I’m telling you that it’s ridiculous. All right, ej’s jealous because sami and i wound up together.

Belle: Oh. Well, just for the sake of putting this to bed, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind establishing for the court. Do you have an alibi for the time of sami dimera’s kidnapping?

Melinda: Objection. This is a fishing expedition.

Judge: I’ll allow it.

Lucas: When sami was kidnapped, I was with my brother, philip.

Belle: You were with philip kiriakis.

Lucas: Who, as you know, is unfortunately missing and presumed dead right now.

Belle: So you can’t prove where you were?

Lucas: I’m sorry that my alibi might be dead.

Belle: Pretty convenient, no?

Lucas: Wait, am I the one on trial here, right now?

Belle: No. You’re not.

Lucas: Good, because jason smith named ej the kidnapper. You know there was a paper trail to back it up–

Ej: Which you obviously helped my brother plant!

Judge: Mr. Dimera–

Ej: You are the one that should be on trial here! You kidnapped samantha!

Judge: That is enough.

Ej: And if you lay a finger on her–

Lucas: You’ll what?

Ej: I’ll kill you!

[Dramatic music]

Brady: Don’t tell me you’re going to go to dallas and confront your dad.

Chloe: Well, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

[Phone ringing]

[Sighs] Voicemail.

[Message tone beeps] Hi, daddy. It’s me, chloe. Um, can you please call me back as soon as you can? Um, there’s something I want to discuss with you.

Judge: Order. Order in my courtroom. Ms. Brady, I’m going to pretend I didn’t just hear your client make a death threat in my courtroom, but you best muzzle him, ’cause I will hold him in contempt.

Lucas: May I step down now?

Judge: You don’t ask. I tell. You may step down. Court stays in recess for the rest of the day. Mr. Dimera, I suggest you get a good night’s sleep and come prepared to sit quietly tomorrow.

Bailiff: All rise.

Ej: You know he’s lying, right?

Melinda: It is not appropriate for you to talk to me unless you’re ready to take a plea deal.

Ej: He lied on the witness stand. You should charge him with perjury.

Lucas: The rant of a desperate, guilty man. I’ll be sure to tell sami how far you’ve fallen.

Melinda: I’ll see you tomorrow, mr. Dimera. You should enjoy your freedom while you still can.

Ej: Oh, he can’t get away with this.

Belle: That was not a smart–

Ej: I don’t care! Aren’t you worried that your sister is going to be with the man who kidnapped her?

Belle: We don’t know it was lucas.

Ej: If chad planted that evidence, he obviously got it from the real kidnapper. Who else could it have been?

Belle: We need to focus on beating these charges. I just did my best to impeach lucas’ testimony up there, and we’re just gonna have to hope that that’s enough. I want to know why chad changed his mind up there.

Ej: You really think he was planning on exonerating me?

Belle: I do, which means something happened in between to make him furious with you.

Ej: But what? I didn’t even see him.

Kate: Why the hell would he do something like that to abigail? I mean, I know they have a history, but it’s totally stupid and pointless, and frankly, disgusting.

Chad: My brother’s always been his own worst enemy.

Kate: Yeah, but chad, he’s not a fool. He had to know how you were going to react. It’s almost like he wanted you to send him to prison.

Johnny: I think this proposal has potential.

Gabi: You’re interested?

Johnny: Oh, I’m very… interested. Text me, and we’ll set up a time for me to hear your offer.

Jake: Or we could talk now.

Johnny: Can’T. Sorry. Got to dash. Things to do, you know. It was great seeing you again.

Jake: Is it me, or is that little punk hitting on you?

Gabi: No, he definitely was, but maybe– maybe we can use that to our advantage.

Brady: Got it, steve. All right, thanks for the update.

Chloe: So what did he say?

Brady: He and kayla are in italy. They’ve gone undercover as a nun and priest to get inside a convent that kristen hid out in a couple years ago.

Chloe: So is that where she is now?

Brady: Well, they’re not sure. Kayla’s come up with this story that she needs to stay there. And if the convent goes for it, they’ll be able to start looking around.

Chloe: So, bottom line, we don’t know if philip is alive or dead?

Brady: Not yet.

[Tense music]

Kate: What the hell are you doing back in town?

Lucas: Well, it’s nice to see you, too, mom. I’m here because I got subpoenaed to testify, okay? I thought it would be a bad idea to blow it off.

Kate: Not if you want ej to go down for kidnapping sami.

Lucas: Oh, damn right I do. After what he did, holding her against her will for months and scared her to death, no, no. No, what he did was unforgivable. They need to throw the book at that guy, and you know it. What, what’s the matter now?

Kate: This righteous indignation of yours may work with sami, but not with me because I know for a fact you’re the one who had her kidnapped.

[Soft music]

Demon johnny: Taking possession of your precious little giovanni was a stroke of genius, don’t you think? Just you watch, we are gonna work his daddy like it’s nobody’s business. And, thanks to you, ej’s convinced that there is nothing’s more important than family. And he’s so desperate for his son’s love that he’ll sign over his shares to me, no questions asked. I’ll take over dimera, and your precious heir will rot in prison.

Melinda: This document was printed on december 31st from a dimera computer. Do you recognize it?

Chad: It’s an expense report.

Melinda: Who printed it?

Chad: I did.

Melinda: Why?

Chad: Because I was doing a quarterly audit and saw some payments I didn’t recognize.

Melinda: You’re referring to the large recurring payments made to one jason smith?

Chad: That’s right.

Melinda: The same jason smith who rented a cabin in greenwood, wisconsin, where samantha brady was held captive for several months?

Belle: Objection. Calls for speculation.

Judge: Sustained.

Melinda: Withdrawn. So you’re telling me you printed this expense report because you noticed some irregularities. Irregularities that would have implicated the defendant, your brother, elvis dimera, in the kidnapping of his wife?

Chad: I had some questions about the transactions.

Melinda: So do I. And I’d appreciate if you’d answer them.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Brady: Look, hey, I know how hard this is, but you’re just gonna have to hang in there a little longer, okay?

Chloe: But this is kristen that we’re talking about, and the more time that goes by–

Brady: I know, but, listen, no matter how angry she is, I can’t see her going as far as taking philip’s life just to get back at us.

Chloe: No. If he’s not dead, then where is he?

Brady: Chloe, hey, look at me, look at me. We’re gonna find him. We’re gonna get some answers, okay?

[Phone rings] Okay.

Chloe: [Sighs]

Brady: Who is that?

Chloe: Oh, it’s my mother. She just keeps calling me, and I don’t want to talk to her. She wants an update on philip.

Brady: Well, you’re gonna get one soon, okay?

Chloe: Yeah, well, right now, I just don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to talk about phillip anymore because there’s no leads, there’s no sightings, there’s nothing. It’s like just philip just disappeared off the face of the earth.

Lucas: What the hell are you talking about? Ej’s trying to pin this kidnapping on me?

Kate: Okay. Just calm down, okay?

Lucas: I’m not gonna calm down. Ej makes up a bs story, and you choose to believe it? Thank you, thank you. I appreciate your support.

Kate: Lucas, I know that you put evidence against ej on the dimera computer. I know that, okay? You made it look like he was making payments to whoever kidnapped sami.

Lucas: So now I’m a hacker? I’m a computer hacker all of a sudden, wow, great.

Kate: You used my password, lucas.

Lucas: I don’t know your password. Even if I did, it doesn’t–

Kate: Chad told me.

Lucas: Make any difference.

Kate: Chad told me.

Lucas: He is such a dimera. That makes me sick; I knew he was gonna say something. You know what? It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. I know it’s bad, okay? I know it’s really bad, but I was desperate. Do you understand me? I am desperately in love with this woman, and she’s going to go back to ej? The way he’s mistreated her? Treated her like crap. Just taking advantage of her. You know what? I’m not gonna do it anymore. You know what, she was alone. She was in pain; she came to me because I make her happy. That’s what I do.

Kate: Okay, lucas, please–

Lucas: No, listen to me. Ej went ballistic when he found out that we were together, and he kicked sami out of the house. And now, she wanted to go back with him? What am I supposed to do? Let that happen again? I had to do something. Give me a break.

Kate: Okay, lucas, just stop. Listen to me.

Lucas: You listen to me. Sami must never find out what I did. If she finds out, I’m screwed.

Kate: Okay, listen, listen. I am trying to help you here.

Lucas: Oh, are you, really? How are trying to help me?

Kate: Yeah, I am.

Lucas: How are you doing that?

Kate: Right now, chad is at the courthouse. And when he testifies, he’s going to make sure that ej is not convicted.

Lucas: What?

Kate: [Sighs]

Melinda: Did your audit reveal that these payments to mr. Smith were laundered through company accounts?

Chad: Yes, but what I want–

Melinda: Let the record show that the witness responded in the affirmative.

Chad: Hey, wait, I wasn’t done answering–

Melinda: Moving on. And did your audit reveal that elvis dimera signed off on each and every one of these payments, directly linking him to jason smith? A simple yes or no will suffice.

Chad: There’s more to the story than that, your honor.

Melinda: Yes or no? Your honor.

Judge: Answer the question, sir. Now, mr. Dimera, or I will hold you in contempt. Serena: It’s my 3:10

Jake: Ah, where is this guy? Hey, how are you feeling by the way?

Gabi: My throat’s a little strained. Mind doing most of the talking?

Jake: Never.

Maggie: Ah, gabi, it’s been a while–jake.

Jake: Hi.

Maggie: Henderson said you were waiting; I thought you might like some tea.

Jake: Oh, wow, maggie, that’s really sweet. But we’re actually here to be with victor.

Gabi: Yeah, is he around?

Maggie: He isn’t available right now.

Jake: Oh, well, we’ll come back when he is. Thank you.

Maggie: If you’re here about your grand plans to run titan and dimera, I know all about them.

Gabi: You do?

Maggie: Of course. I’m victor’s wife. He keeps me informed. I mean, I’m well aware that you approached him with the idea of running titan. That’s the reason I’m taking this meeting.

Brady: Hey, hey, I know you care about philip. I care about you, too. So I want you to know, if there’s anything you don’t want to talk to your mom about, whether it’s how you’re feeling or what’s going on, you can talk to me. I’m here. I’m your friend first, okay?

Chloe: Thank you. And I really–I appreciate that. And you know you can always talk to me about anything, too, okay?

Brady: All right. Can I tell you what’s on my mind right now?

Chloe: Please.

Brady: Food. Can we please eat? I’m starving.

Chloe: Yeah, me too. I’m pretty hungry.

Brady: Then let’s get out of here and go get some lunch, okay? All right?

Lucas: Are you sure about this?

Kate: Yes. Chad had to do the right thing. He couldn’t let his brother go down with something that he’s innocent of.

Lucas: Innocent? Ej dimera innocent? That makes me sick. You know what? Maybe he didn’t do this particular crime, but he’s done so many other illegal things in the past. This was the perfect time to bust him.

Kate: Okay, chad sees it differently.

Lucas: No, he doesn’T. Chad agreed with me, he agreed. He knew it was time that ej got what he had coming. He said it was the perfect time to frame him. All that he had to do was go to the dimera board and give them the evidence, then he’d be running dimera solo. But, no, not chad. He doesn’t do that.

Kate: Okay, look, he was okay–he was okay with ej losing his job. But having his brother go to jail and to prison for a decade, believe me, it was a bridge too far.

Lucas: Right, so he just throws me under the bus. Doesn’t care about me, huh?

Kate: It’s not about you. It’s about his conscience.

Lucas: He doesn’t have a conscience. He’s a dimera; he’s ruthless, like they all are. They are all animals.

Kate: In business, yes. But this is personal, okay? And, unlike ej, chad does have lines that he will not cross. He has a good heart.

Lucas: Yeah.

Kate: Okay? He couldn’t live with himself if he hurt a member of his family.

Demon johnny: Well, I’ll have to do something about that.

Chad: I know that I’m under oath, your honor. And I’m doing my best to answer these questions. But I can’t answer them with a simple yes or no. It’s more complex than that.

Belle: I think chad is trying to help us.

Ej: How?

Belle: I don’t know. But I think there’s more he wants to say about those payments that trask doesn’t want us to hear.

Judge: Proceed, ms. Trask.

Melinda: I have no further questions at this time, your honor. But I reserve the right to redirect.

Judge: So noted. Your witness, counselor.

Belle: [Clears throat] Let’s go back to those expense reports. You said that you didn’t recognize these transactions. These were fund transfers, right? Money that was moved from the dimera account to the account of jason smith?

Chad: That’s right.

Belle: Okay. And when you were asked if my client authorized those payments, you said there was “more to the story.”

Chad: Because there is.

Belle: All right. Well, we’d love to hear it.

Melinda: I’d love to hear an actual question.

Judge: Quiet, ms. Trask.

Belle: Mr. Dimera, do you have additional information about those payments made to jason smith?

Chad: Yes, I do. But what I wanted everybody to know is–sorry, excuse me. What I wanted everybody to know was how the record of those payments got into the computer system at dimera in the first pla–

[Choking] I can’t breathe– my plaque psoriasis…

Abigail: Chad, are you okay? Can someone get him some water? Are you okay? Oh, my god, oh, my god! We got to get him some water! Come on, come on!

Judge: We’re in recess. Bailiff, help them to the witness room.

Lucas: I have to go to the courthouse.

Kate: Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Lucas: Listen, if the truth comes out, I’m going to prison. Either that, or sami is gonna kill me. Either way, I’m screwed.

Kate: Will you listen to me? Please, listen to me. Chad is not going to let anyone know that you were behind the kidnapping, okay? He’s going to say that he planted the evidence himself.

Lucas: What?

Kate: He is going to testify that he was the one who set up ej. You will not be implicated. No one will ever know that you’re guilty.

Brady: Guilty of what?

Maggie: Victor said that you dangled the carrot of a seat on the dimera board to him and that, in return, the two of you would be put in charge of titan. And, ultimately, titan would take over dimera.

Jake: Right, and in time, the three of us would run both companies.

Maggie: The three of you?

Jake: Yeah. It’s a team effort

[Whistles] All the way.

Maggie: Okay. So this so-called team, victor would be the veteran? The old guy who should’ve retired years ago? The geezer who you can put something over on?

Gabi: No, no, we don’t think that at all.

Maggie: Well, good. I’m glad to hear you say that because victor is as sharp and as savvy as he’s ever been. And there is no way I’m going to let anyone take advantage of him.

Gabi: That was never our intention.

Jake: Maggie, we have the utmost respect for victor, which is why we wanted to enter into this partnership in the first place. We want to create a strong, lasting partnership that’s gonna benefit all of us. Secure a legacy for our children. So, maggie, it would be a shame, a mistake, for you to shut us down without letting us talk to your husband first.

Maggie: Who said anything about shutting you down? I think it’s a perfectly fine idea. I just wanted to make sure that you can deliver on your promise.

Melinda: There is never a shortage of drama when the dimeras are involved. I’ll see you when we reconvene.

Ej: Are you okay?

Belle: Yeah. I just–I don’t know how that glass slipped out of my hand.

Johnny: Hey, dad, aunt belle.

Ej: Johnny. I’m so glad you’re here.

Johnny: I promised you I would be. I’m sorry I’m late. How’s it going?

Belle: We don’t know yet.

Ej: Belle was questioning chad when he started choking and gasping for air. He couldn’t even speak.

Johnny: That’s a good thing, isn’t it?

Belle: No, it was scary. I just hope he’s okay.

Johnny: Well, I think that uncle chad got exactly what he deserved for turning on his own brother. You know what the bible says about cain and abel: “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” This is the sound of nature breathing.

Brady: Come on, lucas. Fess up. What are you guilty of?

Lucas: Just not figuring things out sooner. You know, that ej was the one who kidnapped sami.

Chloe: Yeah. But she’s safe now. You rescued her.

Lucas: Yeah, I know, but if I had figured it out sooner, you know, I could have avoided the whole trauma of this situation. She wouldn’t have been held in that cabin against her will for months, so…

Brady: Yeah. She’s right, though. I mean, she’s safe now, and it’s primarily because of you, what you did. I assume you’re back in town to testify against ej, right? Then you’re gonna give that son of a bitch exactly what he deserves, yeah?

Lucas: Yes, you bet I will.

Brady: Kate, can I talk to you in private?

Kate: Sure.

Chloe: Are you okay?

Lucas: Yeah, why? I’m fine.

Chloe: I mean, you just seem a little bit, like, tense and worked up. What’s going on with you?

Abigail: Take it easy, chad. Not too fast. Hey, easy, just breathe. Should I call a doctor?

Chad: No, no, no.

Abigail: Are you sure?

Chad: Yes, I’m fine. I’m okay.

Abigail: Well, thank god. I mean, what happened in there?

Chad: I have no idea. One minute I was fine. The next I couldn’t breathe.

Abigail: Do you think it was stress? I mean, trask was really putting the pressure on you.

Chad: She’s relentless.

Abigail: I could tell that there was something that you wanted to say, but she wasn’t letting you. So what was it? What were you trying to say?

Jake: So you are on board with our plan?

Maggie: Like I said, yes, I think it’s a fine idea.

Jake: That’s great.

Gabi: We’re just surprised.

Jake: Yeah.

Maggie: You can’t be married to victor kiriakis all these years and not have some of his ambition rub off on you. I’m deeply invested in titan. And I care deeply about titan’s future.

Jake: And you see me and gabi as part of that future, huh?

Maggie: Well, victor’s dream has always been to hand over the reins of his company to a family member, but he has come to believe that it’s time to consider broadening that pool of potential executives.

Jake: Yeah, we discussed that the last time we were here. Victor seemed to accept the notion that the next ceo of titan will be an outsider. I mean, considering xander’s out of the picture, brady’s working for the competition, and, well, justin and sonny they are not interested, right?

Maggie: Well, most of all, it’s philip’s disappearance really upset victor. He needs something else to focus on, but, more importantly, he needs a win. The idea of bringing his biggest rival to its knees, ooh, that’s a big one.

Jake: We’re with him on that. I would love to see nothing more than my backstabbing brothers get exactly what’s coming to them.

Maggie: And now that ej might be going to prison, they’re vulnerable, and they are distracted. Seems like it might be a good time to strike.

Gabi: We’re ready.

Jake: And we assume victor is, too?

Maggie: Well, he is certainly enthusiastic about the prospect of crushing dimera. But, listen, before moving ahead, he wanted to make sure that i was in favor of teaming up with the two of you.

Gabi: Are you?

Ej: Last night, you said you hadn’t gotten religion.

Johnny: I haven’T.

Ej: Yet now you’re quoting the bible.

Johnny: Because it’s appropriate. Uncle chad is a judas. He came here to stab you in the back.

Belle: I’m actually not so sure about that. He was trying to say something out there that would help us, but trask kept cutting him off. Once I get him up there, I will give him another chance.

Johnny: Well, I don’t trust him at all. Which reminds me, dad, while you have a minute, I was hoping you could sign that document we discussed. I had one of the lawyers of the company draw it up.

Belle: What is this about?

Ej: Much to my delight, my son has realized that his rightful place is at dimera.

Belle: Oh, I thought your passion was making movies.

Johnny: Obviously, after what happened with grandma marlena, I’m not moving forward with the film. The whole experience actually made me realize it’s time for me to get serious about a real career.

Ej: And since I’m sidelined at the moment, johnny’s offered to be my eyes and ears inside the company. He wants to be there to protect my interests.

Johnny: Which I can’t do unless I have power. In case dad goes to prison, which we fervently hope that he doesn’t, of course, I need the ability to vote on his behalf. You understand, right, aunt belle?

Belle: How could I not.

Johnny: Well, then you understand why dad has agreed to transfer over ownership of his shares to me temporarily.

Belle: Ej, are you sure you want to do that?

Abigail: So what is it? What do you think I need to know? Look, whatever it is, you can tell me. I don’t want there to be any secrets between us.

Chad: I don’t want there to be any secrets either, but, in this case, I think it’s best that you don’t know. You’ll find out in court with everybody else. That way you’re not complicit.

Abigail: Complicit? Oh, my god, you’re scaring me.

Chad: Do you trust me?

Abigail: Of course I trust you, but you just had some mysterious choking attack, and now you’re being really cryptic, so I’m a little freaked out.

Chad: I know. It’s going to be okay. I’m okay, right? I promise you everything is gonna turn out fine.

Abigail: Can I help in any way?

Chad: You are helping me by being here. Seeing you out there will give me the strength I need to do what I have to do.

Abigail: And you’re sure about this?

Chad: Yes.

Abigail: Oof, yeah. And I actually owe “the spectator” a little update. So I’m gonna do that here, come to the courtroom when I’m done, but I promise I’ll be back in there before you take the stand.

Chad: Okay, sounds good.

Abigail: Oh, chad, just in case.

Brady: I just want you to know that I’m trying to find philip. I think kristen might have something to do with his disappearance. She may have staged this whole thing just to get back at me. And I hired steve johnson to look for her.

Kate: Yeah, I know. He mentioned it at new year’s eve.

Brady: Okay. Once she’s found, then we’ll be able to determine if she’s part of this thing.

Kate: Okay, well, you know that you’re no longer under suspicion, so there’s really no need for that, brady.

Brady: Kate, I’m not doing this to clear my name. I feel responsible for what kristen did.

Kate: Okay, well, you don’t know what kristen did.

Brady: No, I don’t, but I wanna find out. I need to find answers. I’m not gonna rest until I do. I mean, that’s what you want as well, right?

Kate: What I want is for you to call off this search.

Chloe: Answer me, lucas. Why are you so on edge? What’s going on?

Lucas: I’m worried about sami, you know. Leaving her alone. The outcome of this case is very important to her. So, you know…

Chloe: Yeah, but she’s supposed to be back in salem soon, right? When is she scheduled to appear in court?

Lucas: She’s not. I told her I didn’t think it was a good idea to be in the same room as the guy who kidnapped her.

Chloe: And you actually convinced her to stay away?

Lucas: Well, you know, you can’t convince sami of much, you know. That’s kind of hard to do, but she realized I was right, you know. She gave a deposition to trask. And that, in combination with my testimony, we’re hoping that’s enough to put ej behind bars for a very long time.

Belle: I think that this whole stock transfer is a little premature. I mean, you could be acquitted, in which case, this would all be completely unnecessary.

Johnny: I already talked to my father. Obviously, we’re all hoping that he gets off. But we need to be prepared in case he doesn’T.

Belle: Okay, well, I say we cross that bridge when we come to it.

Johnny: No, we can’T. If this thing doesn’t go our way, chad could act quickly to consolidate power. My dad would be completely shut out at dimera. We need to act now to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Ej: Remember, this agreement is only temporary.

Belle: Can I at least give it a thorough review?

Johnny: Aunt belle, I know that you are my father’s attorney. And I know that you’re general counsel for the company, but I am his son, and he trusts me. With all due respect, this is between us. So if you wouldn’t mind just leaving us alone for a minute?

Belle: Fine, I’ll go see when we’ll be under way again.

Johnny: Look, dad, I know that aunt belle is just trying to protect you. But you don’t need protection from me; you need protection from uncle chad. And that’s what I’m doing all of this for, to make sure that you don’t get hurt.

Ej: I appreciate that. It means so much to know that you’re looking out for me.

Johnny: Of course I am. I love you, dad. And I know that you have always been on my side. I want you to know that I will always be on yours.

Maggie: I am all in on this plan if you two are successful in getting victor a seat on the dimera board.

Maggie: You have the votes?

Gabi: We believe so.

Maggie: Believe? I’m afraid that’s not good enough. We need an ironclad guarantee. Then and only then will victor sign off on this deal. It was a pleasure doing business with you.

Jake: Well, that was unexpected I mean, yes, we’ve been in the game a long time now, but now we’re playing on a whole new level. You really think we can deliver on this?

Gabi: Hell yeah, let’s go lock down those votes.

Jake: Let’s do it.

Brady: You don’t wanna know what really happened to your son?

Kate: No one, and I mean no one, can know that philip’s alive. What I don’t want is to be told my son is dead. Because I want to hold onto hope for as long as I can.

Brady: Look, kate, I understand that, I do, but if steve can find kristen, kristen can lead us to philip. He could be alive and well somewhere.

Kate: Okay, victor has people who are searching, okay?

Brady: Right.

Kate: So steve is just gonna get in the way.

Brady: The more people that are searching, though, the better, right?

Kate: I’ve made my wishes known, brady.

Brady: Kate, I’ve also made a promise to chloe to find answers, okay, and she’s been in agony about this, and will continue to be until she finds the truth, so I’m sorry, I’m not gonna tell steve to back off.

Belle: Hey, the judge wants us back in five minutes. Are you feeling better?

Chad: Yeah, I feel fine now. Sorry about that. I have no idea what happened.

Belle: Melinda trask happened.

Chad: Yeah, she’s a little aggressive.

Belle: A little? Hey, chad, when you were up there, it seemed like you were trying to get something out, and she wouldn’t let you. So when you get back on the stand, I’ll give you a chance to say whatever it is you want to say.

Chad: Yeah. I–yeah, obviously, I can’t tell you what it is ahead of time, but I think you and ej will be pleased. Sorry, I think I forgot my phone in the witness room. Just give me a second. I’ll be right back.

Abigail: Ej, you shouldn’t be in here.

Evil ej: I won’t tell if you won’T. What are you working on?

Abigail: A story for the paper.

Evil ej: I’m glad I caught you alone. I need to talk to you about something.

Abigail: Look, I know you’re upset that chad’s testifying. But you have to understand, he has an obligation to tell the truth.

Evil ej: Oh, I do understand, better than you think. I, too, feel compelled to be honest.

Abigail: About what?

Evil ej: Something that’s been on my mind a very long time. I’ve tried hard to suppress my feelings, but I just can’t do that any longer. Abigail, I want you.

Brady: Yeah, what?

Chloe: Are you okay? You seemed really distracted. I just asked what you want to order.

Brady: Chloe, kate wants me to stop steve from looking for kristen.

Brady: She’s not optimistic. She says that the fewer people looking for him means the less she has to worry about getting bad news.

Chloe: But what if it’s good news?

Brady: That’s what I said. You’d think that philip’s mother, of all people, would want to get to the bottom of this and find answers as soon as possible, right?

Chloe: Oh, I don’t know. She’s always been odd. I mean, phillip used to always say that his mother was an enigma. Whereas my mother, on the other hand, is just an open book. She wears her heart on her sleeve. And just says whatever–

Nancy: Chloe?

Chloe: Mom? Hi. It’s so weird I was just talking about you.

Nancy: Why haven’t you returned my calls?

Chloe: You came here from new york to ask me that in person?

Nancy: I needed to talk to you!

Chloe: I know, I’m sorry. I just–I really don’t feel like talking about philip. There’s no news, and it just upsets me, all right?

Nancy: This is not about philip! It’s about your father.

Chloe: My dad? What about him?

Nancy: I think he’s having an affair.

Jake: Yeah, that’s great. Keep us posted, and we’ll do the same.

Gabi: I just counted the votes. And without one more dimera on our side, we’re going to come up short.

Jake: Not necessarily.

Gabi: What do you mean?

Jake: Well, shin seems to think that ej’s shares might be in play after all.

Gabi: Wait, what–how?

Jake: Shin spoke to one of the dimera lawyers. Apparently, ej’s considering signing his shares over to his son johnny.

Abigail: What the hell are you talking about?

Evil ej: From the moment I came back to salem, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.

Abigail: That’s insane. Just get away from me.

Evil ej: I know you’re married to my brother. And I’ve tried hard to push these feelings aside, but it’s impossible.

Abigail: Is this some kind of sick joke? I mean, you have a wife that you’re obsessed with. And you were dating nicole!

Evil ej: Only to distract myself, I’ve been using them to try and get you out of my head, but it didn’t work.

Abigail: You have totally lost it, just go and get some help, would you?

Evil ej: Abigail, please, I’m desperate to get close to you. That’s why I wanted to do johnny’s movie, but it didn’t happen.

Abigail: Will you–can you get out of my way?

Evil ej: Oh, how I longed to ravage you. I never thought I’d get the chance, yet here we are alone. And there’s no time like the present.

Ej: I signed the agreement. I know you advised against it and that you have my best interests at heart, but I believe my son does as well.

Belle: You are operating on emotion and not logic. And that is never a smart place to be when you’re making big decisions.

Ej: Johnny is trying to protect his family and his legacy. What’s illogical about wanting to support him in that?

Belle: You don’t find his sudden change of heart about his career and about you a little puzzling?

Ej: Are you saying that you think his intentions are less than honorable?

Abigail: I’m saying that you just handed over a hell of a lot of shares.

Ej: To my child. I never would have done it if I thought there was even the slightest chance he would undermine me.

Belle: Well, hopefully, this is all moot.

Ej: Meaning what?

Belle: Meaning I just talked to chad. Now, he didn’t tell me what he plans to say on the stand, but I get the distinct impression he’s actually on your side. You may just go free.

Ej: Here’s hoping. And while my brother is a wild card, my son is not. I trust that johnny is not only going to do what’s best for me, but also what’s best for the company.

Chad: I’ll just spin it. I’ll tell shin that I thought ej was guilty and that I didn’t wanna let him get away with it. That I was serving the course of justice.

Kate: [Sighs] Shin doesn’t care about serving the course of justice, okay? He just cares about market share. And when one co-ceo is trying to send the other co-ceo up the river, well, that just looks really bad for the corporate image.

Chad: Well, I-I have to– I have to take my chances. I mean–I mean, ej’s been a real son of a bitch since you got back to town, but– but he’s my brother, and he welcomed me into the family when he didn’t have to, so I’m sorry, but I’m gonna have to, um, I’m gonna have to tell them that he didn’t do it. Tell them the truth.

[Apprehensive music]

Melinda: You’re counsel for mr. Dimera? I was under the impression that he’d be representing himself.

Belle: Oh, well, you were misinformed. About a lot of things, actually.

Melinda: This is hardly standard procedure.

Belle: Well, it is well within my client’s rights. Oh, I didn’t make it official. Mr. Dimera, would you accept my services as your counsel?

Ej: Oh, I’d be happy to.

Melinda: Well, isn’t this an interesting arrangement. One that I can’t imagine will go over well with the board, considering your new client was ousted from dimera.

Belle: Oh, melinda. I think you should be focusing on coming up with a new strategy because you’re gonna need it.

Rafe: This doesn’t make any sense. What the hell is going on here?

Shawn: Everything all right, boss?

Rafe: Not exactly.

Shawn: Now what’s got you so upset?

Rafe: I’m being set up. Someone’s got it in for me.

Gwen: Oh, for god’s sake! Oh, ava.

Ava: Hey.

Gwen: Hi.

Ava: Bad day?

Gwen: Yeah, you could say that.

Ava: Let me guess. Xander still hot on sarah’s trail?

Gwen: [Sighs] Hotter than ever. And now he’s teamed up with my little sister.

[Doorbell ringing repeatedly]

Abigail: Hold your horses, I’m coming!

Xander: Took you long enough. You have to answer the door around here?

Abigail: It happens to be harold’s morning off, and, you know, you might have called first.

Xander: I didn’t wanna waste any time after I got your message, so out with it. What’s going on?

Abigail: I may have a lead on sarah.

Steve: No, brady, I’m sorry. I don’t have any leads on kristen yet. But I’m on the case, and i should have something to report soon. Yeah, you’ll be the first to know. All right. Sweetness? Just about ready in there?

[Suspenseful music]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “days of our lives.”

[Soft orchestration]

Kayla: Uh, how do I look?

[Chuckles]

Steve: You are a vision. Even as a bride of christ, you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. Oh. But you’re still having doubts, aren’t you, baby?

Kayla: How could I not? Dressing up as a nun? It’s blasphemous, steve.

Steve: Sweetness, it’s for a noble cause. I think the big dude upstairs will forgive you. Besides, we don’t have many options. We need a way into that convent if we’re gonna find kristen. And this is it.

Xander: You have a lead on sarah? Why didn’t you just say so?

Abigail: Well, I just did.

Xander: Well, what is it?

Abigail: Well, I went to the dimera travel department to see when the jet was last used for non-dimera business.

Xander: And when was that?

Abigail: Well, it-it wasn’T.

Xander: Wait, that’s your lead? How is that a lead?

Abigail: Well, because we have more than one jet. The company keeps several older models as a part of their fleet that can be reserved for personal use, and apparently, one of them was used for non-official business around the time that sarah disappeared.

Xander: Oh, my god, was sarah on that jet? Did you–did you show the pilot a picture?

Abigail: I’m afraid that I couldn’T.

Xander: And why not?

Abigail: Because he’s gone.

Belle: [Clears throat]

Ej: Not that I don’t appreciate this, but just the other day, you went on and on about not wanting to represent me, yet here you are. What made you change your mind?

Belle: Mm, someone may have convinced me that you might be innocent.

Ej: And to whom am I indebted for rising to my defense?

Belle: Nicole walker.

Ej: Nicole stood up for me?

Belle: Yeah, but she still hates your guts, and that’s pretty much a quote.

Ej: And I don’t blame her, but I’m grateful that she convinced you to do the right thing, even though defending me will, in all probability, risk your position as general counsel at dimera.

Belle: Hmm. I can handle the board.

Ej: And what about your other concern?

Belle: Don’t worry. I can handle sami too. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Barnes: The court will now hear the case of the state versus elvis dimera. Are all parties present?

Melinda: Da melinda trask for the people, judge barnes.

Belle: Isabella brady for the defense, your honor.

Barnes: So the defendant has chosen not to represent himself?

Ej: That’s correct, your honor.

Barnes: Well, I applaud your decision. Now that we have a lawyer squared away, we can start with jury selection.

Ej: Actually, your honor…

Belle: Ej, what are you doing?

Barnes: I’ll allow it. What is it, mr. Dimera?

Ej: If it pleases the court, I would like to waive my right to a jury trial.

[Suspenseful music]

Steve: Listen, baby, if you’re still having second thoughts about this…

Kayla: No, no, it’s important, and it’s, uh, it’s for a noble cause, like you said.

Steve: Definitely.

Kayla: Yeah, and, um, and so I’m just gonna put my worries of blasphemy aside, and I’m– I’m going to impersonate a nun. And whatever it takes to find kristen, I am–I’m all in. Do you really–do you really think that kristen’s at that convent?

Steve: Well, she hid out there once before. Stands to reason she’d try it again.

Kayla: Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense.

[Apprehensive music]

Steve: Let’s get this show on the road, sister.

Xander: The pilot’s dead?

Belle: No, no, he’s not dead. He just–he quit, and apparently, not that long after the non-official flight possibly transporting sarah to god knows where.

Xander: Now, that’s not suspicious at all.

Abigail: It does seem to suggest some sort of payoff. Or that he at least knew how to get out while the getting was still good.

Xander: He? So you have a name?

Abigail: Unfortunately, that’s all I have.

Xander: Well, that’s a start. Let’s hop online and track him down.

Abigail: Oh, yeah, him and along with everybody else that’s got the same name.

Xander: Well, how do you suggest we narrow it down?

Abigail: Well, obviously, I’m gonna go back to the dimera travel department, and I’m gonna see if he left any contact information.

Xander: So why do you need me?

Abigail: I don’T.

Xander: You called me.

Abigail: To update you. I’m–it’s your big idea to come and show up here.

Xander: Fine, and I am very grateful for the opportunity, but, uh, I don’t wanna slow you down, so I’m gonna go. Please call me as soon as you learn anything, yeah?

Abigail: Yeah, I–yes. Will do.

[Scoffs]

Gwen: Of course, abigail says their looking into sarah’s disappearance has nothing to do with me. That she’s just trying to look for her long-lost cousin, but you know what, I don’t buy that for a single minute.

Ava: Mm. Little miss goody two shoes, right?

Gwen: Those are the ones that you need to look out for the most. And especially with abigail, it’s all–pfft. It’s a big act.

Ava: Really? Well, you should know.

Gwen: I do. I do know. I’ve seen her dark side. I’ve seen her vengeance. I’ve seen her cruelty. How she revels in payback.

Ava: Oh. Well, that’s something we have in common. Because I am reveling in payback, myself right now.

Shawn: All right, so both of these perps are saying that you planted evidence against them?

Rafe: So they claim.

Shawn: But I mean it’s– obviously, they’re lying, right?

Rafe: Of course they’re lying. Really, you even have to ask that? I’d never do anything like that. Even if I did, you know, in all the years in my career, I have never had one complaint against me, and now I’ve got two in the same damn day?

Shawn: So you’re sure these guys don’t know each other?

Rafe: Right now, I’m not sure of anything. You know, as far as I can tell, no, they never crossed paths on the outside, but I mean, once they’re in the system, who knows?

Shawn: Well maybe–I don’t know, maybe they ran into each other and they realized they had something in common. You know, punish you for– for whatever reason, and they, you know, decided they would, i don’t know, help each other out. Or…

Rafe: Or what?

Shawn: Or someone put them up to it. We hit the bike trails every weekend

Rafe: So you think someone put these clowns up to this?

Shawn: Well, it makes about as much sense as two perps at the exact same time claiming that you framed them.

Rafe: Yeah. Sure does.

Shawn: So can you think of anybody who has something against you? One that might, you know, wanted to get revenge?

Rafe: No. No, not off the top of my head. I mean, look, as commish, you always got the target on your back.

Shawn: That’s right. This person–I mean, this person’s gotta have a real axe to grind.

Rafe: Yeah. Sure does feel personal.

Shawn: So can you think of anybody who might have a grudge against you?

Gwen: So you plan to get revenge on rafe for sleeping with nicole?

Ava: You disapprove.

Gwen: Oh, come on, you know me better than that. I’m just very interested to hear how you’re going to do it.

Ava: Well, it’s already in motion. And let’s just put it this way: Rafe is going to find himself in a little bit of trouble at work.

Gwen: What kind of trouble?

Ava: So I, uh, have a connection with a few gentlemen who have found themselves recently wrongly incarcerated, and I may have convinced them to file a report saying that a certain commissioner planted evidence on them.

Gwen: Whoa.

[Laughs] I mean, that’s a–that’s a fairly serious crime, is it not?

Ava: You bet your ass it is. Cops go to jail for that.

Gwen: So you want to send the man that you say that you love to prison?

Ava: Okay, look. This is just between us, okay? I need you to keep your mouth shut about it.

Xander: Hello, ladies. What does gwen need to keep her mouth shut about?

Abigail: Hello.

Chad: Hey! Hey, what are you doing here?

Abigail: I just stopped by travel to, uh, see what they got going on, but, uh, departmental meeting, so it’s a ghost town.

Chad: Ah, sounds like the new editor in chief at “the spectator” is hard on the trail for sarah horton.

Abigail: Doing my damndest. It’s mostly for aunt maggie.

Chad: Yeah.

Abigail: So you wouldn’t happen to have any information about one of dimera’s old pilots, would you? Guy named ned grainger?

Chad: Uh, ned. Yeah, he was here for years until last spring.

Abigail: Do you know why he left?

Chad: I don’t, but it was pretty sudden if i remember correctly.

Abigail: I don’t suppose you’d happen to have any of his contact information, would you?

Chad: I do not. Yeah, but now that I think of it, it was a headache for payroll. Grainger’s last check was returned, and they were never able to track him down.

Abigail: Well, damn.

Chad: Yeah. Why, what’s going on?

[Knock at door]

Steve: Excuse me. Mother superior?

Mother superior: Good evening, father, sister. What can I do for you?

Steve: Well, reverend mother, we’re in need of assistance, and we’re hoping you can help us.

I may have moderate to

severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Mother superior: Well, of course, I’d be happy to help in any way I can. You are visiting here, I assume?

Steve: Yes, yes, we are.

Mother superior: Would you like some water?

Steve: No, thank you. You see, sister mary elizabeth has been part of an exchange program with a small parish in the tuscan countryside. Very small, in fact, and I’m afraid their convent was lost in a fire.

Mother superior: Well, how dreadful. Was anyone hurt?

Steve: No, no, no, thank god. But there is a matter of lodging. Everyone else besides the sister has been relocated to convents temporarily.

Mother superior: I see.

Steve: And I am scheduled to fly back to the states in just a few days, so I would hate for sister mary elizabeth to be forced to cut her mission short. So I’m hoping and praying that you can take her in.

Gwen: Hi, I um, uh, thought you were on your way to go and see abigail.

Xander: I already did.

Gwen: Oh. Right, well. Okay, you know ava, don’t you?

Xander: In a way.

Ava: Unfortunately, when we knew each other, I was a bit worse for wear.

Xander: In my former life as a caregiver. But don’t worry, those days of altruism are long behind me. So what exactly were you two discussing that gwen needs to keep her mouth shut about?

Ava: Oh. Rafe’s surprise party. His birthday is in a few weeks, and I am getting a jump-start on planning, so I was swearing gwen here to secrecy.

Gwen: Trust me. My lips are sealed.

Ava: Thank you. You too. All right, need to get out of here, I got a lot of things to do, so I will see you later.

Gwen: Good luck with the party.

Xander: That was strange.

Gwen: What was?

Xander: You two. Chatting away? How do you even know each other?

Chad: Hey, I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help, but I really gotta go. I’m due in court.

Abigail: Oh, ej’s trial. Yeah.

Chad: Yeah, I’m the first witness, so I don’t wanna be late.

Abigail: Look at you all excited to bury your brother.

Chad: Yeah, no. I’m starting to think that he might be, uh, might be innocent.

Abigail: Really? You were ready to burn him at the stake, what happened?

Chad: I–look, ej’s been an ass. The whole thing with johnny’s movie, coming onto you to try to get under my skin, trying to undermine me here at dimera. I was–I was angry, but I may have overreacted a bit. Everything ej’s pulled, he doesn’t deserve to go to prison.

Abigail: You found proof that he masterminded sami’s kidnapping. He deserves to go to prison for that, and he will. After you testify.

Chad: Not necessarily.

Barnes: Mr. Dimera, did I hear you correctly? You waive your right to a jury trial?

Ej: I do, your honor.

Belle: Judge barnes, may I have a moment to confer with my client?

Barnes: It would certainly help if the defendant and his counsel were on the same page, so we’ll take a five minute recess. Not a minute longer.

[Gavel bangs]

Belle: What the hell are you doing? I am the attorney; you are the client, which means you sit there and shut up and let me do my job.

Ej: I’m just saving us a lot of time.

Belle: By opting out of a jury trial?

Ej: I’d rather take my chances with the judge.

Belle: Ej, you are an attorney; you know full well it is harder to sway a judge than a jury!

Ej: Considering I’m innocent, I shouldn’t have to sway anyone. Besides, I think he’ll be fair.

Belle: Really? Why?

Ej: I’m feeling lucky, i guess, and again, I’m innocent, so how could I lose?

Belle: What is going on here, ej?

Ej: What’s the big mystery? I trust the system, and I’m willing to let it work.

Belle: Oh, please. You don’t trust anyone or anything. So what is it, you think that you’re gonna get to the judge? Or have you already?

Ej: I just think barnes seems like a reasonable person. And given the details of this case, I certainly trust someone who has passed the bar than the hoi-polloi of this town who would love nothing more than to bring down a one-percenter.

Belle: Oh, god, do you know how arrogant you sound?

Ej: I’m simply speaking the truth.

Belle: Okay, well, then do us all a favor and stop speaking. Okay, we are gonna run this defense my way, or I’m out.

Ej: I am very grateful to have you on my side, belle. So I will leave my fate in your very capable hands.

Abigail: So you’re not necessarily gonna testify about what you know? I don’t get it.

Chad: I’m gonna give my testimony, and it will be up to the courts to decide what to do with him.

Abigail: But that’s an obvious decision–I mean, you have hard evidence that ej is guilty as charged, so I mean, when the court hears that– oh, my god. Don’t tell me you are thinking about lying on the stand.

Chad: I didn’t say that.

Abigail: But you are thinking about it. Oh, my god, chad, no. I mean…

[Sighs] Whatever twisted loyalty dimera thing you feel like you have with your brother, you cannot possibly be thinking about perjuring yourself.

Chad: Look, I’m well aware of my legal obligations. I have to go.

Abigail: [Sighs] I’m coming with you.

Chad: I thought you were tracking down information on grainger.

Abigail: I gave him a message to get back to me. I can’t do anything till they respond.

Chad: You don’t have to go just for me.

Abigail: I’m not. Reporter I assigned to the trial is sick, so I’m covering it for “the spectator.”

[Sighs]

Gwen: How do I know ava? Um, through her son, charlie.

Xander: Charlie dale? My former intern who turned out to be a rapist?

Gwen: Yeah. Yes, that-that charlie. After he died, um, I wanted to offer ava my condolences. It was such a horrible tragedy, after all.

Xander: Did you know him?

Gwen: No, not well, um. We sort of just bumped into each other once or twice. Ended up sharing sob stories. Turns out we both know what it feels like to be an outcast. We sort of bonded, really.

Xander: Oh, so you bonded with a psychopath.

Gwen: Look, I’m not defending what charlie did, I’m just saying that I–well, I saw that he had this other side to him. He just seemed lost. Like he was sensitive, and i felt that ava deserved to know that her son wasn’t just some soulless monster. You know what I mean?

Shawn: Well? Someone come to mind?

Rafe: [Sighs] Okay, this is gonna sound weird, but there’s, uh, there’s this stuffed bear that nicole and i kinda shared custody of.

Shawn: Duke?

Rafe: You’ve met?

Shawn: Well, I-I might’ve, you know, caught a couple of the hand-offs, so.

Rafe: Right, okay. Well, um, yeah, nicole found him on her desk without a head.

Shawn: What? Oh, poor guy.

Rafe: She was totally upset, which, uh, obviously, was the intention, and, you know, the grudge may have been against nicole, but since, you know, I kinda owned duke as well…

Shawn: Well, I mean, it’s worth looking into.

Rafe: Yeah.

Ava: Hi.

Rafe: Hey.

Ava: Hope I’m not interrupting.

Steve: So reverend mother, may we impose on your generosity and ask you to provide a room for sister mary elizabeth?

Mother superior: We’d take in all god’s creatures if we could. In fact, we actually have had several guests staying with us these past few months.

Steve: You don’t say?

Mother superior: And it would certainly be a shame for your– for your mission to be cut short.

Kayla: Well, completing this mission would mean the world to me, mother superior.

Mother superior: Such dedication. Oh, of course, the sister and i will do everything possible to find you a place. I just need to speak with them first. May I get back to you?

Steve: We’d be so grateful.

Kayla: Yes.

Steve: You can reach me at this number.

Mother superior: I’ll call you as soon as I have an answer. God bless you, sister. And you, father…?

Steve: Nichols.

Mother superior: Oh, father nichols.

Steve: Right.

Kayla: Thank you.

Steve: Good night.

[Pensive music]

[Knock at door]

Mother superior: Enter.

Kristen: Excuse me, mother superior. I just saw your visitors leave. May I ask who they were? My plaque psoriasis…

Mother superior: Father nichols was hoping we could take in sister mary elizabeth. I told him I’d have to talk to the sisters, as is our practice, but I do hope we can give him some good news. After all, we do try to find a place for everyone, as we did for you.

Barnes: Ms. Brady, the five minutes are up. So if you and your client are done conferring, I’d like to begin this trial.

Belle: Your honor, I, um, would like to ask for more time.

Melinda: More time? That’s unbelievable!

Belle: My client deserves the best defense I can provide, and I just got the case this morning.

Melinda: Your honor, this is outrageous.

Belle: All I am asking is that we adjourn for the day and begin calling witnesses tomorrow.

Melinda: Judge barnes, mr. Dimera is obviously very pleased with his counsel’s confidence, and he’s clearly waived his rights to a jury trial, so I see no reason whatsoever to delay these proceedings.

Barnes: I’m inclined to agree. Ms. Trask, you may call your first witness.

Belle: Her first witness isn’t even here, your honor.

Melinda: The prosecution calls chad dimera to the stand.

[Tense music]

Kristen: Sarah horton? Damn it. It’s the last thing I need right now is that little caper coming to haunt me. Is there anything else?

Ava: Nothing. Except that gwen is desperate to get xander off sarah’s trail. She’s convinced that if he finds his ex, that he’s gonna leave her.

Ava: Gwen is devastated by the idea of losing xander when they’ve been so happy. You still there?

Shawn: Do you think that ava is framing you? Your girlfriend?

Rafe: It’s just, uh, a gut feeling.

Rafe: Well, there’s a jealousy issue. She’s not comfortable with my– my friendship with nicole.

Shawn: What do you mean? I mean, you and nicole have been friends for years. I mean, assuming that is all that it is, right?

Rafe: No, no, no, that’s all it is, it’s just, yeah. We’re just friends. Just, uh, ava can get worked up.

Shawn: Vitalis tend to do that.

Rafe: Yeah, and I also made the mistake of accusing her of killing duke.

Rafe: Not well, no. She was very upset and insisted I apologize, and then I felt like a jerk for, uh, having accused her of that.

Shawn: So now you’re circling back around?

Rafe: Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t–you know, maybe it’s just my imagination running wild, but..

[Sighs] You know, it–maybe ava did tear the head off of duke, you know? But for her to send those perps after me? I mean, she could ruin my entire career.

Chad: I did.

Belle: Thank you. And I’m glad I caught you before ej’s trial. You’re going, right?

Chad: I have to. I’m a witness for the prosecution.

Ava: Nicole.

Nicole: Oh, uh, hi.

Ava: Hey. Well, what a surprise. You know, rafe and I, we were just going in for some breakfast. Why don’t you join us?

Nicole: I would love to, except I’m running late. I was just gonna grab something from sweet bits. So maybe another time, okay?

Ava: Okay, that was a little odd, don’t you think?

Rafe: Hm? What do you mean?

Ava: Well, I could have sworn she was going into the brady pub and… you don’t think she’s avoiding us, do you?

[Dramatic music]

Melinda: Oh, look who’s here.

Tripp: Hey, melinda.

Melinda: Sorry to tell you, looks like you wasted a trip, tripp.

Tripp: Ha. Yeah. It’s weird, they should have opened, like, half an hour ago.

Melinda: Yeah, I know when they should have opened. I also know that I just came all the way across town just to cool my heels for the last 20 minutes.

Tripp: Well, sorry.

Melinda: It’s not your fault. Adequate baked goods. Completely unprofessional management.

Tripp: Hey, come on. Don’t– don’t post that, okay?

Tripp: Well, for one, it’s not true. And mainly, it’s not fair. You have no idea why they’re late.

Tripp: Yeah, kinda. And, look, I’m telling you, this morning… chanel doesn’t need any more grief, okay?

[Tense music]

Allie: Oh, my god. Last night, that wasn’t– that wasn’t a dream? We…

Chanel: Yeah. We did.

[Soft orchestration]

Chanel: You’re freaking out, aren’t you?

Allie: No.

Chanel: You’re playing with your hair. You only do that when you’re freaking out. Horton. What’s going on? Talk to me. Whatever it is, just say it. I know last night was your first time with another girl.

Allie: Yeah. Yeah, it was.

Chanel: And you’re weirded out, aren’t you?

Allie: No. No, not really. Being with you last night, it felt…natural.

Chanel: Well… it did for me too. But I want you to know that what happened last night, it wasn’t planned. When I asked you to stay, I did not intend for that to happen.

Allie: I know. But it did. We…made love, and it was… in the moment, it was so wonderful.

[Sighs] But… this morning, I just– I can’t help thinking about–

[Phone ringing]

Johnny: You got me. Sometimes I talk to nonno. Crazy, right?

Ej: [Chuckles] Only if you hear him answer back. Telling him about last night, were you?

Ej: Oh, you know, dumping your new bride in front of a room full of people including her own mother.

Ej: Indiscrete, melodramatic, self-indulgent. That would be your mother in you.

Johnny: Might have been a little melodramatic, but effective. I just–I hate those long, drawn-out post-mortems. “It’s not you, it’s me.”

Ej: Effective, calculated, and although there were moments where you did seem genuinely contrite… it was still very cruel.

Johnny: And that would be my father in me.

Ej: Touché.

Johnny: Hey, come on. This is your “I told you so” moment. You should be relishing. Your humbled son coming to you saying, “oh, father, I was wrong. You were right. If only I’d listened to you the whole time.”

Ej: Because you never listen to anyone.

Johnny: I never used to, I admit. But… upon reflection, I have come to see that that was immature. Downright juvenile.

Ej: Mm. Not buying it.

Johnny: Oh, no? Well, I’m glad you’re sitting down then, because I’m about to do a complete 180. You weren’t just right about chanel. You… you were right about me.

Ej: Really?

Johnny: Really. I’ve been running from my legacy. I was just telling nonno right before you walked in what I’m about to tell you now. My future, my place in this world, is not in hollywood, it’s here… at dimera.

Belle: I knew you and ej weren’t getting along, but to testify against him? That’S…pretty harsh, don’t you think?

Chad: I don’t really have a choice. I’m the one that found the payments made to the goons who were guarding sami, so…

Belle: Well, yeah, but according to ej, those payments were planted. Someone intended them to be found.

Chad: Yeah. Of course ej’s gonna say that.

Belle: Okay. So you’re saying that you think not only did he make the payments, but he did it with corporate money and then recorded it?

Chad: Wouldn’t be the first time his arrogance trumped his common sense.

Belle: Well, I’m sure that’s exactly the case that melinda trask will make.

[Clears throat]

Chad: Uh, so let me ask you this. If he is convicted, what kind of sentence do you think he’s gonna get?

Belle: I don’t know. Maybe eight to ten?

Chad: Eight to ten years?

Belle: Yeah. It’s a felony offense.

Chad: I just thought it would be less than that.

Belle: Really? I mean, he had his wife kidnapped and held her in isolation so she didn’t know where she was or what was gonna happen to her. God, if you ask me, if ej did do it, he deserves that and a lot more. Woman: I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Ava: I mean, come on. You must have seen that. I mean, nicole was headed for the door until she saw us. How lame was her excuse? It’s not even 9:00, I– how could she be running late?

Rafe: Okay, ava. Maybe she didn’t have time for breakfast. Maybe she was just, I don’t– getting something to go.

Ava: Yeah, from here. But then she decided to go to sweet bits. It’s like she can’t be in the same room with you. For my sake. And I don’t know. I mean, how many times have i told her it’s okay? I know the two of you are friends.

Rafe: Ava. I think you’re making too much of this, okay?

Ava: Am I?

Rafe: Mm.

Ava: Because sometimes I feel like… I feel like she just sees me as some overly possessive nutjob.

Chad: No. She does not see you that way.

Ava: Yeah, well, I’m not so sure.

[Sighs] Which means that we both need to work harder at making her feel comfortable around us. I mean, the two of you have gone above and beyond to make sure that I know how much you care about me. So… I don’t think either one of you needs to suffer any longer.

[Emotional country music]

[Door opens]

Belle: Hey.

Belle: All right, I got chad’s signature. I just need yours. Oh, you’re reading about ej’s trial, huh?

Nicole: I just can’t stop thinking that ej should not be representing himself.

Belle: [Laughs] I think he’s having the same realization. Last night he asked me to represent him.

Belle: No. No. I turned him down.

Nicole: Why?

Belle: Well, I work for dimera, so it would be a professional conflict of interest. Not to mention the personal one.

Nicole: Meaning sami would lose her mind if you took his case.

Belle: Exactly.

Nicole: [Laughs] Seems to me like a really good reason to do it.

Ej: Damn it, johnny, would you sit down? I feel like there’s a vulture circling overhead.

Johnny: [Chuckles] Sorry. Aren’t you gonna eat anything?

Ej: It’s like my mother’s still here. “Aren’t you gonna eat anything?”

[Sighs] No, I’m the one who’s sorry.

[Clears throat] Not in a great mood this morning.

Johnny: It’s okay. I get it. You’re about to stand trial for kidnapping. And that’s the morning that your son who’s been acting like kind of a jerk the last year or so decides to tell you that he is a changed man, that he’s seen the light.

Ej: Don’t say you were acting like a jerk.

Johnny: You don’t think I was?

Ej: Of course you were. But don’t admit it.

Johnny: Right. An apology is an admission of guilt. Learned that one on nonno’s knee.

Ej: So why the change in heart? What happened to your dream of becoming the next fellini?

Johnny: I just… I decided that I… didn’t wanna make movies about other people. I wanted to be the star of my own movie. I also realized that I still have a lot to learn from… you.

Ej: Well, as swell as that is to hear, your timing’s unfortunate. If the da has her way, you’ll be visiting me in statesville.

Johnny: But wouldn’t it be nice to have someone looking after your interests at dimera?

Ej: Such filial devotion.

Johnny: Okay. I’ve also realized that my interests are very closely tied with your interests. “Oh, daddy, I wanna be just like you when I grow up.”

[Both chuckle]

Ej: So tell me, is that why you offloaded the missus last night?

Ej: To do what I wanna do, I need to be… unencumbered.

Ej: And so to hell with chanel?

Johnny: I do feel for her. How will she ever find someone to take my place?

[Phone ringing]

Allie: What do I do?

Chanel: Well, answer it. You don’t want him get worried.

Allie: Okay. Hi, tripp.

Tripp: Hey. I stopped by the bakery to see you, but it’s closed.

Allie: Yeah. Um, I knew chanel was not gonna be in any shape to work today, and I just–I didn’t feel like running things by myself. It was kind of a long night.

Tripp: Yeah, I can imagine. Well, good thing for chanel that she had you. I imagine it was pretty intense.

Allie: Yeah. Yeah, it was.

Tripp: So where are you now?

Allie: Um, I’m home.

Tripp: Great. I have some time before work. I’ll come right over and see you.

Allie: Actually, I, um– I’m running out the door ’cause I’m gonna go check on chanel. I just wanna, you know, make sure she’s okay.

Tripp: Oh, uh, okay. That’s really nice of you. Well, please tell her how sorry I am about what your jerk of a brother did.

Allie: Yeah, I will.

Tripp: No, I’m sorry. That just slipped out.

Allie: No, I understand.

Tripp: It must be kinda hard not to say, “I told you so” to chanel, you know? I mean, it’s not like you didn’t warn her about him.

Allie: Um, tripp, I have to go.

Tripp: Right. Sorry. I’ll stop by, though, after my shift.

Chanel: What did he– was he suspicious?

Allie: No. Not at all. He was completely understanding which just makes it clearer that I am the worst person on the planet.

Chanel: You’re being too hard on yourself.

Allie: I cheated on my boyfriend.

Chanel: Well… I cheated on my husband. Not that he gives a damn.

Allie: And now I’m lying to him. I feel sick.

Chanel: I’m sorry.

Allie: I know what i have to do. I have to tell him the truth.

Ava: Oh. Now that you are a full-fledged doctor, I feel like I never get to see you anymore.

Tripp: I am putting in a lot of hours.

Ava: Great. I’m gonna go to sweet bits, get you a coffee and one of chanel’s muffins.

Tripp: Actually, the bakery is closed today.

Ava: Really? Where’s allie?

Tripp: She’s got her hands full with chanel.

Johnny: So honestly, how do you think the trial’s gonna go?

Ej: [Grunts] To my mind, they don’t have much of a case. And the way I live my life, I’ve built up an enormous amount of goodwill with the citizens of salem.

Johnny: A real pillar of the community. Now, do you wanna level with me?

Ej: [Sighs] It’s bad. Trask hates kristen with the heat of a thousand suns, and kristen made her look like a fool. She wants me to pay for my sister’s sins.

Johnny: And putting away a dimera wouldn’t do her political career any harm.

Ej: Exactly. And my dear brother chad will do anything and everything to help her achieve that end. Would you please stop fiddling with that? Put it down.

Johnny: Sorry. I was just thinking about nonno. Chess, strategy, the move after the next move.

Ej: My god. You’re so full of dimera this morning, aren’t you?

Johnny: I am. And I’m thinking if you do go to prison, I am the only one left to get you out. Deal with fredo– I mean chad. And make damn sure that dimera enterprises has a aaa buy rating by the time you get out and I hand you back the reins.

Ej: Quite an agenda. And how do you propose to be able to do all that?

Johnny: Well, I haven’t worked out all the details yet. But I know where it starts. You need to sign all your shares over to me.

Belle: I wouldn’t take ej’s case just to spite my sister.

Nicole: Okay. Then how about a more noble motivation? How about stopping an innocent man from being railroaded?

Belle: You think ej is innocent?

Nicole: I know he is.

Belle: Why, because he’s such a good guy?

Nicole: Oh, god, no. I don’t think–

[Sighs] Look, I know that ej is more than capable of kidnapping sami. And I also know that if he had, he would have never let sami escape. And he sure as hell wouldn’t have left that paper trail at dimera enterprises.

Belle: You really believe that, don’t you?

Nicole: I do. And this is coming from a woman who really freakin’ hates his guts right now.

Belle: Why?

Nicole: Because he dropped me like a hot potato for sami and didn’t have the guts to tell me. And I had to hear it from her.

Belle: [Laughs] And I’m sure sami broke the news with grace and tact.

Nicole: She was insufferable. Ej knew that she would tell me and that she would rub my nose in it.

Belle: Wait, so you think ej planned that?

Nicole: I do. And being the kinda gal I am, I want ej to pay for what he did to me. But he didn’t kidnap sami and he shouldn’t have to pay for that.

Kate: Good morning, hamlet. Something is rotten in the state of dimera?

Chad: You know there is.

Kate: No, I don’t know that. Ej may be facing trial for something he might not have done, but in the history of dimera family business, that’s like pilfering office supplies.

Chad: We both know he didn’t do it and that I’m the primary reason he was charged with it.

Kate: Yes, well, I suggest you wait and see if he’s convicted before you don your sackcloth and your ashes.

Chad: Oh, he’s gonna be convicted. For one thing, he’s defending himself like A… like an idiot. Just now belle told me that– that he could get eight to ten years.

Kate: What’s the sudden attack of conscience? You were totally fine with him taking the fall.

Chad: Well, I thought I was. You know, I figured in my place, ej would do the same thing.

Kate: Yes, he wouldn’t think twice about it.

Chad: Right. But the thing is if I do what ej would do, then– then I’m just like him. And I can’t let that happen.

Kate: Oh, my god. What are you saying?

Chad: That maybe I should tell him that it was lucas that really kidnapped sami.

Kate: Oh, my god. My plaque psoriasis…

Chanel: [Sighs] Okay, you need to calm down and think about this. Are you sure telling tripp what happened is a good idea?

Allie: Well, it’s the right thing to do.

Chanel: I don’t buy that. You tell tripp what happened and one, you really, really hurt a great guy, and two, you could blow what the two of you have out of the water.

Allie: But I’m lying to him.

Chanel: No, you’re protecting him. Look. What happened between us last night, it was a one-time thing. And it was special. You were there when i needed you. But you still love tripp.

Allie: Yeah, I do.

Chanel: And… and don’t you dare laugh– I still love johnny.

Allie: Even after what he did to you?

Chanel: That was not the johnny I know.

Allie: Well, it’s sure as hell the johnny I know.

Chanel: Okay, look, right now we just need to focus on you and tripp. And I really, really don’t want last night to mess that up.

Allie: Like my mom did? She didn’t tell ej when she was with my dad, and by the time she did, it was way worse then if she had just been honest from the start. Okay, no. No, I have to tell tripp. I don’t have a choice.

Ava: Wow, poor chanel. You know, I’m a vitali and i even think the dimera’s are cruel bastards.

Tripp: Yeah, and allie agrees with you. She’s been trying for months to get chanel away from johnny.

Ava: Really?

Tripp: Yeah. At least allie was there last night. I mean, she’s the one who got chanel home. And I just talked to her now and she’s on her way over there to see how she’s doing this morning.

Belle: Wait, so you think chad is setting him up? I’m not sure it was him, but I am sure someone’s orchestrating things to frame ej. And I’m also sure that if ej’s not careful, it’s gonna work.

Kate: You knew that I had qualms about this from the very beginning and you convinced me to keep quiet.

Chad: Well, I was angry at him.

Kate: Of course you were angry at him. He’s been trying to stab you in the back from day one. I mean, worming his way into giovanni’s movies so he could have sex scenes with abigail just trying to get under your skin.

Chad: Right, which is why i had no problem getting him fired. But letting him rot in prison for something he didn’t do? That’s too much.

Kate: If you tell the truth, lucas is going to be in that prison.

Chad: The difference is lucas actually committed the crime, so maybe he’s the one that should pay for it.

Ava: [Laughs] Yes, I have heard that one before. You know what it could be? It could be a cover. A cover for them just to be together right under your nose and you think you can trust them and then all of a sudden they’re just stabbing you right in the back.

Tripp: We are still talking about allie and chanel, right?

Ava: Of course.

Tripp: It just seemed to me that little tirade sounded pretty personal. Is everything okay with you and rafe?

Ava: Yeah. Perfect. And you know what, it is personal. Because you are my son and i don’t want anyone hurting you.

Tripp: You don’t have to worry about me, mom. Chanel is not a threat. Allie and I are in a– we’re in a really good place.

Chanel: Okay, my mom is gone so the coast is clear.

Allie: Okay. But before I go, I just wanna make sure… are you okay?

Chanel: No. But I will be. Mostly thanks to you. It’s just…

Allie: What?

Chanel: I told you that I’m worried that what happened last night might screw things up with you and tripp. But I’m also worried about us.

Allie: Why?

Ej: You want me to sign over my shares to you?

Jonny: Dad, if you go to prison, the second you enter that cell, chad’s going into action. I’m gonna need the power to vote your shares in order to fend him off.

Ej: You already have shares of your own. And on your last birthday, you became old enough to vote on the board, so–

Johnny: No, but that’s not enough to counteract any moves chad might make. And tell me you don’t believe uncle tony and kate are gonna angling for all they can get.

Ej: When I gave your mother power of attorney, she used it to screw me and take over dimera.

Johnny: Trust me. I will look out for you and sydney. And I will make sure that when you’re out you can pick right back up where you left off.

Ej: Well, you’re right about chad and the others. But I–I–

Johnny: Dad. I know. I’m asking you to have faith in me and I also know that I haven’t done much lately to inspire that faith. But bottom line, I’m what you’ve got.

[Tense music]

Ej: Okay, fine. I’ll sign them over temporarily. And only if I actually go to prison.

Johnny: Of course, of course. And I’m hoping that this entire conversation is moot, that you’ll be cleared of all the charges. But we have to be prepared for the worst.

Ej: No, you’re right.

[Sighs] Okay, I’ll do it.

Johnny: Dad, I promise… you won’t regret this.

Kate: I know what lucas did was misguided, but you can’t say anything.

Chad: Misguided? He locked up sami for three months. Now she’s travelling the world with her kidnapper. I think that deserves a word a little stronger than “misguided.” Criminal? Sociopathic?

Kate: Okay, just stop. All right, stop. You said yourself that lucas wasn’t dangerous. He loves sami. He’s trying to protect her. He would never hurt her. But if ej finds out, he’ll kill him. And then he’ll go to jail anyway.

Chad: Okay, you know what? That is really twisted logic even for you, kate.

Kate: Could you… could you just stop and hear me? You know what ej will do if he finds out. Philip is missing. Philip is probably dead. So if I lose lucas too, I’m sorry, but that’s on your head.

Chad: That’s not fair.

Kate: I’m fighting for my son’s life here.

Chad: Okay. I’ll say that I planted the evidence. And I’ll keep lucas out of it.

Kate: You’re gonna lose your job if you do that.

Chad: Maybe I should. Maybe that’s the only way I can keep myself from turning into ej. Into father.

Kate: [Sighs]

Chad: I have to do what’s right, kate.

Kate: Even if you lose everything? Woman: I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Rafe: This is insane. I didn’t plant evidence on this guy. I didn’t need to. One more conviction, he goes away for 30 years. Listen, this guy would say or do anything to get out from under this. By the way, it’s not a new story, okay? It’s been done time and time again.

Melinda: It’s funny you should say that, because he’s not the only one making this particular complaint against you. This guy says the same thing.

Rafe: What?

Melinda: These are very serious allegations, commissioner. I had no choice but to investigate.

Rafe: “Had”?

Melinda: I already forwarded the matter to internal affairs. For your sake, I hope you’re telling the truth.

[Tense music]

[Knocking on door]

Nicole: Oh, hi.

Ava: Hey.

Nicole: What are you doing here?

Ava: Well, you said you were gonna get something from the bakery, but I found out that it was closed today, so… figured you might be hungry.

Nicole: Oh, thank you. Mm-hmm.

Ava: Full disclosure, though, I did have ulterior motives. I think it’s time you and i had an honest conversation about what’s going on between you and rafe.

Johnny: I know you’re a busy man, so I’ll make sure all the papers get drawn up.

Ej: I’d better get going. Will I see you in court? It would be nice to have my son there.

Johnny: And good for the judge to see I don’t think you did it.

Ej: But you don’t have to. I understand it could upset your mother.

Johnny: Won’t be the first time, won’t be the last. I’ll see you in court.

Ej: Good.

Johnny: Hey, dad. Good luck.

Johnny: [Chuckles] “Oh, dad, I promise you won’t regret it.” That was almost too easy. Ahh, everything is going exactly as planned.

Chanel: And what plan is that?

[Tense music]

[Elevator dings]

Allie: Hey.

Tripp: Hey, allie. I didn’t expect to see you till after work.

Allie: I know. Um… but I just wanted to know if you had a few minutes to talk.

Tripp: Yeah, yeah, sure. What’s up? I thought you were going over to see chanel.

Allie: Um, I was. But after what happened last night, I had to come see you right away. This is the sound of nature breathing.

Nicole: Ava, I– I told you a million times that rafe and i are just friends.

Ava: That’s exactly my point. You’re both friends and you’re staying away from each other and it’s not right.

Nicole: Well… we’re just trying to be sensitive to your feelings.

Ava: I know. But it’s unnecessary. I was silly to be so insecure. You know, I really do trust both of you and I just– I don’t want you to stay away from rafe on my account, okay?

Nicole: I’m not staying away from him. I’m just, you know, busy.

Ava: So busy– too busy for old friends? I mean, you and I are still friends, aren’t we?

Nicole: Of course. Yes.

Ava: Okay, good. Then it is settled. You are coming to dinner.

Nicole: Okay.

Ava: Okay. But it may just be you and me, because, ugh, poor rafe. His job, it’s–ugh. Poor guy. He never knows what may come up next.

Rafe: This doesn’t make any sense. What the hell is going on here?

Tripp: You seem pretty upset.

Allie: I am. Um… last night, chanel and I…

Tripp: Go on.

Allie: We had a really long talk. And the more she was talking to me about johnny, the more that i realized that I am so lucky to have you.

Tripp: That made you upset?

Allie: Yeah. Because, I don’t know, I feel like I don’t tell you that enough. And maybe I sometimes take you for granted.

Tripp: You–you don’t have to tell me anything. I mean– when it’s the real deal, you just know. No words necessary. Okay?

[Tense, emotional music]

Johnny: I wish you would have warned me you were coming by.

Chanel: Oh, sorry, did i displease you? I wouldn’t wanna get on your bad side.

Jonny: Look, I’m busy and we really have nothing left to talk about, so…

Chanel: I agree. So…think fast.

[Ring clinks]

Johnny: Thanks. And while you’re at it, could you leave the keys to the house?

Chanel: Oh, I’m way ahead of you. And giovanni? Go to hell.

[Dramatic music]

Johnny: Been there, done that.

[Laughs]

Chad: I’ll just spin it. I’ll tell shin that I thought ej was guilty and that I didn’t wanna let him get away with it. That I was… serving the course of justice.

Kate: [Sighs] Shin doesn’t care about serving the course of justice, okay? He just cares about market share. And when one co-ceo is trying to send the other co-ceo up the river, well, that just looks really bad for the corporate image.

Chad: Well, I–I have to… I have to take my chances. I mean… I mean, ej’s been a real son of a bitch since he got back to town, but… he’s my brother and he welcomed me into the family when he didn’t have to. So I’m sorry, but I’m gonna have to, um… I’m gonna have to tell them that he didn’t do it. I have to go to court, tell them the truth.

[Tense music]

Melinda: [Laughs] You’re here early. Nervous?

Ej: Just trying to avoid the media.

Melinda: Oh, if you wanted to avoid the media, you shouldn’t have had your wife kidnapped.

Ej: [Chuckles] I didn’T.

Melinda: Tell that to the judge. You know, I’m actually glad you decided to represent yourself. I’m actually looking forward to going toe to toe with the infamous ej dimera.

Belle: Some other time, perhaps. Today, you’ll be dealing with me.
