THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[soft dramatic music]

A free man. You are back home where you belong. I’m happy.

Thanks to you. Thanks to you. I can’t tell you what a relief it is. This whole time thinking that I was the one that put Sarah in that chair.

Hey, everyone who loves you knows the pain you were in.

To think that I trusted Fiona Cook. I mean, a wom– I don’t even know the woman. She turned out to be a homicidal maniac.

Yeah, well, just thank god it’s over and the right person is behind bars.

[relaxed music]

Fiona?

Hello, Sarah.

What are you doing out of jail?

The DA dropped the charges. Your mother-in-law is a free woman. Here’s to freedom.

I wouldn’t bother signing that, Xander.

Don’t try talking me out of this now, Justin.

Oh, that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to let you both know that someone has filed an injunction prohibiting the transfer of Xander’s Titan stock to you.

What the hell is going on, Xander?

Your guess is as good as mine. Who filed this injunction? It’d have to be a family member. Well, it can’t be Alex. We all know he’s not Victor’s son.

But I am. [tense music]

Philip. What the hell? You– you filed this injunction?

That’s right, big brother. I’m back. And I’m here to stop you from throwing away our father’s legacy.

[knocks]

Stefan?

Hola, prima. What’s shaking?

Oh, my God.

[laughs]

Javi! Oh, my God, I can’t believe it. It’s been so long. It’s really you?

Damn right it is, chica. Cousin Javi is here. He’s queer, and Salem better get used to it. [laughs] [tender music] [soft dramatic music]

You know, from what I hear, you never gave up on anything or anyone you ever wanted. I am your son, after all. I’d like to think I have that fighting spirit in me. And for that reason, I am not giving up on my marriage to Gabi. No, no.

I’m gonna fight for the woman that I love.

[suspenseful music] [grunts] Ah.

Excellent work, Ivan.

I am glad to have your approval, Madame.

This– I’ve been thinking, enough with the “Madame.” We’ve known each other for years. Just call me Vivian. [soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Madame, with all due respect, I am your loyal servant. It would be quite inappropriate for me to call you by your first name.

Fine, fine. Have it your own way. But I’m just glad we’re in cahoots again.

Yeah.

Now, do me a favor and make sure my son is still breathing. [soft dramatic music]

He lives, Madame.

[sighs] What a relief. I’ve just had these pangs of guilt resorting to these draconian tactics.

But as you said before we embarked on this mission, it was all for his own good.

You’re right. It’s all for his own good. Yes, it is. I know.

[laughs]

Why didn’t you tell me you were coming, Javi?

And spoil the surprise? You know I love my grand entrances.

Yeah, I do know that. And, hey, we just found out about Tía Hilda. I’m so sorry.

Thanks. We’re all grateful that Mami didn’t suffer at the end. How’d you find out?

Tío Gabriel sent Rafe a letter along with your mami’s engagement ring.

Her ring? Why would he send that?

I guess she wanted him to have it.

[chuckles] Of course she did. Rafael was always her favorite, and he was the son she really wanted, not the one she got.

But I don’t understand. EJ was ready to throw the book at you. Why would he let you go?

My attorney convinced the DA to change his mind. So I’m not gonna face any charges at all.

You hit me with a car and left me for dead, and that was before you threatened to finish the job by pushing me down a flight of stairs. How is this possible?

Well, my darling, dearest daughter-in-law, it’s all thanks to you. [chuckles] [relaxed music]

Funny. Last time I was in this room, Alex was my new half-brother.

You can’t do this to me, Philip.

Now, I wasn’t exactly thrilled that Dad’s company was in the hands of that vainglorious jerk. No offense, Justin.

You don’t know what’s at stake here.

As it turns out, Alex is pretty much Steve Jobs compared to you. I mean, you’ve only been CEO for a few months and you’re already packing it in, handing the whole thing over to Stefano’s degenerate daughter.

Damn you, Philip.

Well, once I caught wind of this idiotic deal, I was impelled to do all I could to block it since I’m Victor’s son too!

But he didn’t leave Titan to you, did he? So you can’t do this. You have no legal right. He has no right at all.

Oh, I beg to differ. [dramatic music]

You know, when I first heard about Stefan’s impending divorce from that wretched woman, I knew it was too good to be true.

As you pointed out to me, Madame, your son has a weakness for Gabriella Hernandez.

Indeed he does, a serious and debilitating weakness. But don’t you worry, my darling. Mother’s here to make sure you don’t fall prey to another cuckolding shrew ever again. [ominous music] [somber music]

I don’t think it was a slight against you, Javi.

It kind of feels that way.

Look, I’m sure your mami only gave the ring to Rafe because she knew you weren’t gonna marry a woman.

Yeah, but what if I wanted to give it to a man? Better yet, what if I wanted to keep it for myself? What do you think? – Fabuloso.

I know, right? However, it pales in comparison to that rock on your finger. Girl, let me get a closer look at this bling. [chuckles] Wow, Gabriella. You scored up, huh, marrying a super wealthy DiMera?

I don’t think I’ll be married to him much longer.

What?

We’re getting a divorce.

[relaxed music]

You’re free because of me? What are you talking about?

[scoffs] Oh, come now, Sarah. Surely you can figure it out. I mean, first you didn’t see Brady driving the car, then you did. Then you claimed you were confused. Oh, no, wait. Then you saw me driving instead. [scoffs] At this point, what jury is going to believe you?

You know that I lied about Brady to save your son from killing him.

A noble gesture, which very happily turned out in my favor.

[exhales sharply] No. No, it– it can’t be that simple. I’m not the only one that remembers seeing you driving that night. Brady does too.

I really do owe you. I mean, not only did you fly from Paris to support me, but you– come on.

[chuckles]

You did so much more than that. You’re the reason I’m free.

Eh, you’re my brother. Kind of have to be there for one another.

Yeah, yeah, but you went above and beyond. You really did. And I can never thank you enough. It’s just that–

What?

As grateful as I am that my name is cleared, my conscience, not so much, man.

Meaning?

Meaning Fiona never would have been driving that car that night if I hadn’t been drunk out of my mind. That’s what I mean. If I hadn’t fallen off the wagon, Sarah would probably not be in that chair.

Brady, remember, you weren’t driving. [somber music] Now you just need to resolve to stay sober. Nothing to be gained by beating yourself up.

True. Thanks for that. There actually may be some good news regarding Sarah.

Yeah?

Yeah. With a little bit of luck, there’s a chance that Sarah could be back on her feet again, thanks to Kristen. [soft dramatic music]

So it sounds like you all have a lot to talk about, so I’m going to take my leave.

No, Kristen, don’t go. This deal is happening whether Philip likes it or not. We just need a couple minutes here.

OK, Xander, sweetheart. It is gonna take a lot longer than a couple minutes. And I really do not want to be privy to your family drama.

Kristen, please.

No. You can keep the first vial, and just let me know when you’re ready to make the trade for the second.

Kristen, wait! Philip, this is ridiculous. You have no claim to Titan. Father didn’t even put you in his will.

Only because my parents are trying to protect me from any, you know, legal trouble.

Right, because you faked your death to frame Brady. The end result is the same.

Not quite. Since, as you may recall, Brady let me off the hook last year, enabling my return to the land of the living, and as such, I am prepared to assert my rights.

Any right you have is to watch from the sidelines while I do what I wish. That’s what Victor wanted. [dramatic orchestral music]

Actually, it’s not.

This letter was originally mailed to the psychiatric facility where I was getting treatment in Europe. But I’d already left to come home for Dad’s funeral, so it only recently made its way to me in New York.

What does it say?

Why don’t you tell him? [soft dramatic music]

Signed by Victor. It’s dated just before the plane crash.

And?

Well, let’s see here. Vic is informing Philip that he’s made a new will and that he wishes that he– quoting here– “that he had the option to leave Titan to Philip.” But he can’t because he’s supposed to be dead.

I’m the rightful heir. And it’s only by happenstance that I’m not in charge this very minute.

Then why the hell didn’t you make this claim earlier?

As I said, I didn’t know about this letter until now.

He doesn’t really have a case, does he, Justin?

Well, it’s hard to say, but this is certainly enough to contest the transfer of Titan to Kristen.

Look, Philip, you just don’t really understand what’s going on here. Kristen has a serum that can– it can cure Sarah’s paralysis, but she won’t give it to us unless she gets Titan, and– this is my wife we’re talking about. I’m appealing to you as your brother. Please, you’ve got to drop this lawsuit. [dramatic music]

Sorry, Xander. Not a chance in hell.

So Dr. Rolf developed a serum that could cure Sarah’s paralysis. Kristen has offered to hand it over to Xander and Sarah in exchange for exonerating me. However, as it turns out, they had nothing to do with my release anyway.

Right. So is Kristen willing to stand by her offer?

She says that she’s making arrangements to hand the drug over to Xander. What? What?

It just seems so out of character of her, you know, to be so generous.

Yeah, well– [knocking] Yeah, well, Kristen, she’s been full of surprises lately.

Like this one. [ominous music]

Well, unfortunately for you, Sarah, Brady wouldn’t have made a credible witness either since he would have to admit that he was blackout drunk that night, anything that he thought he saw or heard just wouldn’t stand up in court, obviously.

OK, fine, then forget what Brady and I remembered. You confessed, Fiona. You admitted your guilt to me, to Xander, to Brady.

Aha, but not to the Salem PD. And since I didn’t tell the police that I was responsible for the accident and I denied confessing it to anyone else, I’m sure you can deduce that I am in the clear. [relaxed music]

Oh, my God.

So Stefan slept with that skank while you were in prison.

Yep.

And then you slept with his brother to get back at him.

[chuckles] Well, you know me. I had to even the score.

Yeah, I get that. [laughs] I don’t know, man. This is like an episode of “The Real Housewives.” [laughs] [somber music] Oh, I’m sorry. You’re still hurting, and I shouldn’t make jokes.

No, you shouldn’t. I am still hurting. And not only that–

Not only that, what?

I’m starting to have second thoughts about ending my marriage.

So what? You’re still in love with this guy?

Yeah, I guess I am, even after he betrayed me. Is that pathetic?

No, of course not. You can’t choose who you love. You know that. If you could, I would have had a much easier time of it growing up in Texas. As Mami always told me… [speaks Spanish]

Mm. The heart wants what it wants.

Right? And if your heart wants Stefan, there’s no sense in fighting that.

I don’t even know if he feels the same way. He could be completely done with me. He hired his own divorce lawyer, and I’m expecting papers any day now.

OK. Maybe when he, you know, sees the dotted line waiting for his signature, he’ll remember the beautiful, sexy, amazing woman that he’s been married to. And then he’ll forget how to sign his name. [laughs]

Yeah, maybe he will.

[groans] What was Stefan thinking? These divorce terms are much too generous.

Especially since the woman cheated on him with his own brother.

Well, maybe I can make a few adjustments.

Oh, better not. That might raise suspicions.

[groans] You’re right again, as usual. I’ll just sign the damn thing.

Uh, will there be no issue, you copying your son’s handwriting?

Forgery happens to be one of my great talents.

Oh. To write.

Thank you. Here we go, “Stefan O. DiMera.” Our son is free at last. [dramatic music] Cahoots.

[ominous music]

Shall I deliver it, Madame?

Oh, no, Ivan. Thank you. I’d like to do the honors.

Well, if you’re caught, Madame, you’re gonna get thrown right back in the prison.

Don’t worry. I’ll be very discreet. Now, you just take care of my son. [soft dramatic music]

Stefan’s wedding ring.

Oh. He won’t be needing this anymore, will he?

Some day, you’re gonna be very angry with me when you find out what I’ve done, and then you’ll realize it was the best thing I could do for you.

Madame, we should not linger.

Oh. I love you, my son. See you soon.

I hope your marriage works out, querida, if that’s what you really want.

It is. I do. I do want to work it out. And talking to you has helped me to see that.

Well, you know, I am an expert in matters of the heart, right? [laughter]

I wouldn’t go that far. But you did help me realize that I love Stefan, in spite of all.

When you love someone, it’s got to be in spite of all because we all have faults and we all make mistakes.

So true. But enough about my screwed-up life. I want to hear about you. You still haven’t told me why you came to Salem.

Well, in a nutshell, now that Mami’s gone, I figured I should do what I want for once. Follow my dreams instead of having them stepped on because you know how needy and complicated that woman is. I mean, God rest her soul. So I thought Salem would be a fresh start for me.

Does that mean you’re moving here?

That’s the plan. [laughs]

[laughs] Oh, my God, yes!

And it’s not too complicated since everything I own is in the back of that beat-up, old car in your driveway fresh from Corpus Christi.

In that case, you have to stay with me and Rafe.

I was hoping that you’d say that. [laughs] But do you have room for me? You think it’d be cool con tu hermano?

Ah, sí You’re family. We have plenty of room. And Rafe is gonna love the idea!

[laughs] Even if I’m still wearing his ring?

As long as you’re only borrowing it, I’m sure he’ll be cool.

[laughs]

We’re gonna have so much fun. We get to hang out all the time.

Well, not all the time. I still have to find a job and I’m not sure doing what yet.

Oh, my God. I have the best idea. Come work for me.

I’m sorry. Am I interrupting?

It’s OK. I need to get home and pack.

Oh, that’s right. You’re heading back to Paris.

I am now that my brother is free.

Thanks to you.

No, thanks to you being innocent. I need to get home to Nicole and Jude.

I know. I know. It’s been good having you around, and I’m so grateful for what you did for me.

No, I’m just happy it all worked out.

Yeah, again, thanks to you. I’m gonna miss you.

I’m gonna miss you too. But, hey, we’ll be in touch.

Miss you too.

Video chats.

Yeah, tons of them, absolutely. Yeah.

Kristen.

Eric. [sighs] Alone at last. [tense music]

I don’t understand. What happened to the woman that was so desperate to make amends with Xander, who would play with Victoria for hours and said that she loved me like a daughter? Was that all just a lie? [relaxed music]

No, Sarah. It was real.

I’d do anything to get that back.

I’m so terribly ashamed of myself, but I’m also somewhat self-aware. So I know that my bravado is just a façade. It’s just a way to cope. And my drinking, well, it does dull the pain of knowing that I have ruined everything, as I always do.

Sarah, wait.

I know I have no right to ask you this, but I was hoping you’d do me a favor.

Did you not hear what I just said? Sarah needs this serum. She’ll never walk again.

Look, I feel for Sarah. I really do. But for one thing, there’s no guarantee that experimental serum is gonna work. And even if it’s legit, do you really think it’s worth giving up a multibillion-dollar company?

Yes! That’s absolutely what I think. Put yourself in my shoes, Philip. This is my wife we’re talking about, the love of my life, the mother of my daughter. Have a heart. Think about what this would mean to me, mean to Sarah.

Look, the way I see it, you kind of brought this on yourself.

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Well, let’s face it. The accident which paralyzed Sarah, it wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t been naive about a woman who apparently treated you like crap when you were a kid and then abandoned you.

Watch where you’re going with this one.

I’m just saying. If you’d been paying more attention, maybe you would have realized that your mother was still a hopeless drunk before she mowed down your wife.

You son of a bitch.

So what brings you by? [soft dramatic music]

This. I got you a new car.

What? Why?

Well, I figured I was the one who had your old car crushed into a tiny, little cube, so…

Ah. Whoa, this car has a waiting list. I mean, I think it’s years long.

Well, you are going to be seeing a lot more of Rachel, and our daughter deserves to be driven in style, yes? Oh! It has an added bonus feature. It’s self-driving, just in case.

Kristen. You don’t have to worry about that because I’m sober and I’ve been going to meetings, OK?

Brady, I am so proud of you.

You’ve actually been in a very generous mood lately. Even Eric had to agree when I told him that you were willing to hand that drug over to Sarah.

Oh. Well, I mean, I haven’t handed it over yet.

Xander, come on! Let go. This isn’t helping.

Fine. [tense music]

Maybe you should just go and cool off, OK?

You’re not gonna get away with this, you little punk!

Whatever you say, brah!

Phil.

Phil, what? You can’t seriously think it’s a good idea for Xander to give away the company, to a DiMera no less?

Yes, I have my own reservations, but you can’t expect this to be easy for him. This isn’t just business. He’s doing it for his wife.

And I’m doing this for my father. You knew Victor just about better than anyone. So you must know that he’d be devastated to think we were giving up the company. So I’m gonna honor his memory by making sure that never happens.

You want me to work at Gabi Chic?

Yes. Javi, it’d be perfect. I just lost my personal assistant, and I desperately need to replace her.

What happened to the last one? You fire her?

Not exactly.

Oh, so she quit.

No.

All right, what’s the deal? Am I walking into a “Devil Wears Prada” type sitch?

[chuckles] No, it’s not like that. It’s just that Connie, my assistant, tried to kill me and Rafe, and now she’s in the loony bin where she belongs.

OK.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter. You have to work for me. Take the job. We’ll have a blast.

Will I get free stuff?

Of course, tons of freebies.

All right, it’s a deal. I’m in. [laughs] All right, now I’m gonna go get my stuff from the car. I’ll be right back. It’s addressed to you.

Oh.

It’s my divorce papers.

What the hell’s going on here? Ivan. Is that you?

It’s good to see you again, Mr. DiMera.

What the hell is going on? Why am I in here?

I apologize for the discomfort, but I’m just following your mother’s orders.

My mother’s or– My mother’s having me kidnapped. Where are we going?

Back to the motherland.

To the mother– Alamainia. Why?

So you can start a new life without Gabi Hernandez in it.

No. No. [grunts]

So why haven’t you given Sarah the drug? Kristen, you’re not going back on your word, are you?

No, no, no, no, no, of course not. [chuckles] I met with Xander just a little while ago, and I already gave him the first half of the serum.

Why not give him the whole thing?

Well, Rolf is putting the final touches on the other half. I’ll hand it over as soon as everything is, well, sorted out. [soft dramatic music]

Damn you, Philip. Damn you.

Hey. So glad you’re home. I need to talk to you about the meeting with Kristen.

Um, OK. But first, I– there’s something that you need to know. I just ran into Fiona.

What?

Yeah. She’s free. She’s not facing any charges.

How the hell is that even possible?

Um, I will explain it all, but she wanted me to give you this.

– Dear Xander, I’ve decided to leave Salem. I know I’ve made a terrible mess of things, and I don’t expect you to forgive me, but please know that I honestly did try to change for you. I wanted so badly to be a part of your life, a part of my granddaughter’s life. I just couldn’t quite pull it off in the end, obviously. Perhaps one day in the not-too-distant future, I’ll really change and become a person who’s worthy of your forgiveness, God willing. But even if that never happens, I want you to know that I do love you very much, and I always will, and I’m so proud of the man you’ve become. Love, Mum. [somber music]

You OK?

I’m fine. I just hate that she’s getting away with what she did to you. Nothing we can do about it now. At least she’s out of our lives now.

Mm-hmm.

So what happened with Kristen?

That’s what I need to talk to you about. [tense music]

How did it go?

As expected, Xander’s head exploded. He was counting on using Titan to get Sarah that miracle drug.

Ha, ha! Well, he’ll just have to find another way to help his invalid wife because soon Titan will belong to us.

He actually signed them.

Oh, Gabriella, I’m so sorry. Maybe you should call him. I mean, if he knew that you were having second thoughts, maybe he might admit to having them too.

No. He definitely made up his mind.

[grunts] You got to help me get out of here. I need to stay in town to fight for my marriage.

Madame thinks that’s a bad idea.

I don’t give a damn what she thinks. She can’t force me to get a divorce.

She already has.

The hell does that mean?

I think it’s best if you just relax and try to enjoy the ride.

No, no, no, no! Ivan, wait. Wait. You got to get me out of here. I need to get to Gabi and tell her that I love her, and I need her in my life. Ivan, no, no, no! I need to tell Gabi that I love her! You son of a bitch!

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[soft dramatic music]

[phone ringing]

What do you want, Kristen?

Is that any way to talk to the person who has the fate of your dear, sweet Sarah in her hands? I am calling to see if you’re ready for our meeting this afternoon.

As ready as I’ll ever be.

Oh, come on, Xander. I mean, there’s no need to be pouty. I mean, we’re both benefiting from this deal greatly. I mean, you’re getting a miraculous revolutionary serum, which will enable your paralyzed wife to walk again. And I am–

And you’re getting your grubby, grasping DiMera claws on the Kiriakis empire.

Mm-hmm. [laughs]

[birds squawking] [phone ringing]

Ah, Ms. Cook, there you are. But then again, where else would you be? I brought you a coffee. Sorry it’s not an Irish coffee, which I’m sure you would prefer. But then again, alcohol is what got you into this mess in the first place.

Are you enjoying toying with me, D.A. DiMera?

No, not at all. In fact, I know Christmas is still a few months away, but I come bearing gifts.

What’s this?

This is the best deal you’re ever going to get. So unless you want to spend the rest of your natural life in prison, I suggest you take it. [tense music]

Ooh. We having a liquid lunch today?

This? No, this–this is an Italian herbal liqueur, one, from what I’ve heard, my old man grew quite fond of. Can I interest you in a pour?

Uh, it’s a bit early for me, thanks. As requested, I’ve drawn up your divorce papers. Once these are signed, sealed, and delivered, Gabi Hernandez will be out of your life for good. [soft dramatic music]

[door clicks open]

I brought you lunch.

I’m not hungry.

Rafe, the doctor says that you need to take your pain meds with food. Are you okay? You look like someone died.

Someone did. [dramatic music] [soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Surely you’re not having second thoughts, Xander. But if you are, perhaps I should remind you that securing Dr. Rolf’s serum to treat Sarah’s spinal cord injury is the only way that she will ever have the chance to walk again.

I’m well aware of the stakes here, Kristen.

Good. Well, then I will be by to sign the papers and seal the deal. Mm? [tense music] [phone beeps]

Is this some kind of sick joke?

So you’ve heard the news.

Of course I heard. All family members were informed of what you’re planning to do. Tell me, please, that this isn’t true. Tell me you’re not seriously planning to turn over Victor’s legacy to the DiMeras.

If you’re worried about Gabi leaving you nothing but the lint in your pockets, don’t be. The agreement is just as we discussed. You will keep the mansion, the Bistro, and any and all stocks and bonds and diversified investments, while your soon-to-be ex-wife will retain sole ownership of Gabi Chic and receive a generous financial settlement.

Sounds pretty cut and dry.

Well, that’s what you wanted, right? A nice, clean break? [soft dramatic music]

Yeah. That’s what I wanted.

After you sign these, I’ll get them to Gabi. And after I have her signature, I’ll follow up with the court. And then your marriage will be over.

Is there a problem with the terms?

The terms are fine.

So what are you waiting for?

[sighs]

Tía Hilda died? Ay, Dios mío. When?

Just last week. It’s all in Tío Gabriel’s letter. Her cancer came back, and she didn’t want to say anything to anyone.

Poor Tío. [somber music] Sounds like she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Yeah.

And they already had the funeral.

In Corpus Christi. They kept it small, just immediate family.

It’s too bad. I would have liked to gone down to Texas to pay my respects to Papi’s brother– since he’s God knows where.

Yep. And Dario is in no position to go.

Mami told me she named me after Tío Gabriel because he has such a good heart.

Yeah.

Rafe, when did we lose touch with that part of the family? We used to be so close.

Yeah. I know.

I still think about them all the time– list them in my prayers every night.

Well, clearly, they still think about us too. Tía Hilda left me this in her will.

I’m not surprised. You were always her favorite.

Not really. It’s just–she liked me because I made her laugh.

Yeah, we all tried to make her laugh. You were the only one who could.

Yeah, well, it’s just because I’m funnier than you all are.

Oh, and more full of yourself than any of us.

Correct.

[laughs] What are you waiting for? Open it up and find out what Tía left you.

Hurry up. I want to see.

Okay, hold your horses, Miss Impatient.

Ooh, a ring box. Is that what I think it is? [soft dramatic music]

Tía Hilda’s engagement ring.

Oh, my.

I remember admiring this when I was a little girl. All the cousins wanted to wear it. [laughs] We used to beg her to let us try it on, but she said it wouldn’t leave her finger until the day she died.

Yeah. “QueridoRafael, I know that you have not “been lucky in love, sobrino. Those gringas do not appreciate you the way you deserve.”

[laughs]

She’s right about that. “I hope this ring will bring you “the kind of lasting affection that I shared “with your Tío Gabriel. “And when you find the right woman– “which I know you will do– “I want you to give her my ring with my eternal blessing. Con mucho cariño,Tía Hilda.”

That is so sweet. You were like the son Tía never had.

Yeah. Which is kind of sad because she does have a son.

Yeah, but you and Tía Hilda were kindred spirits. What is it that she used to say?

“Cortados por el mismo patrón.

Si.

Si.

Cut from the same cloth.

Yeah.

And, like you, Tía really believed in “amor verdadero.

True love.

Mm. Not that we all don’t believe in that and want that.

Yeah.

I thought I had finally found mi amor verdaderoin Stefan. But now– now it’s over between us forever.

Sign the damn papers, Stefan.

I need a minute. This is the end of a marriage we’re talking about here, not some timeshare in the Florida Keys. So please, if you’ll allow me a few seconds, I need to process.

You should have done your processing before you had me draw up divorce papers.

What’s going on here, Melinda, huh? You think as soon as this ink dries on that paper and my divorce from Gabi is final, you’re gonna finally get your shot?

[laughs] Wow. You know, I didn’t think it was possible, but you are even more full of yourself than your brother EJ.

Look, Melinda, I– I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It was a joke, and it was uncalled for.

You know what, it’s not funny. You know, take your time. Take all the time you need. Sign, don’t sign. I couldn’t care less. The billable hours are the same. [tense music]

I suggest you gird your loins before going in there.

Oh, why is that?

Because your brother, Stefan, is in a particularly foul mood.

Oh. Well, I appreciate the heads up. Nothing and no one is going to rain on my parade today. [chuckles] Did you draw up the documents for my meeting this afternoon?

I sure did. And I don’t know how you made this happen, but it is quite the coup. Shin and the Board are very excited.

Well, they should be because once Xander Kiriakis signs these papers, transferring control of Titan Industries to moi… [laughs] DiMera Enterprises will be unstoppable.

Uncle Vic must be rolling over in his grave– his own son, handing over his life’s work to Stefano DiMera’s demented daughter.

Let him roll then.

Xander, why are you doing this? What does Kristen have on you?

What Kristen has is a serum that will cure Sarah’s paralysis. She’ll walk again.

What? Seriously?

Courtesy of Dr. Wilhelm Rolf.

Oh. Well, this makes a lot more sense then.

I thought it might. God knows I wish– I wish there was another way to help Sarah, but we haven’t found it.

Look, I certainly am sympathetic to your problem. But as legal counsel–

I don’t care about your counsel right now, Justin. This isn’t your decision to make. It’s mine. Victor gave Titan to me to do with as I choose, and I choose to trade it for this serum. There’s nothing you or anyone else can say that will change my mind.

Maybe there is. Maybe there’s something that I can say. [soft dramatic music]

It’s the same exact deal I offered to Brady Black. You plead guilty to attempted vehicular manslaughter for causing the drunken hit-and-run that robbed your daughter-in-law of the use of her legs, and I’ll recommend to the judge that you serve ten years in prison.

Ten years? Is that all?

As I said, Ms. Cook, this is the best deal you’re ever going to get. You could be looking at twice that time, if not more. So you’d be wise to sign here and here so we can bring this matter to a close. [ominous music]

What do you think you’re doing?

I regret wasting your time and the resources of the good people of Salem, but I am not signing a damn thing.

You realize, if I take this to trial, you’ll likely die alone in a cell inside Statesville Prison?

You’re presuming I’ll be found guilty.

There’s no presumption involved. Your conviction is a certainty if you confessed to the crime.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I never confessed to anything.

You’re saying that you did not confess to plowing into Sarah Kiriakis while driving under the influence?

That’s right. I never admitted to that, nor will I admit to anything else you think you can charge me with. [tense music]

I don’t know what game you’re playing here, Ms. Cook, but I assure you, it will not work.

But you see, I’m certain that it will work, D.A. DiMera.

Ms. Cook… [clears throat] though you did not formally confess to the police, you stated to your son and his wife that you were behind the wheel of the car that mowed Sarah Horton down like a stray blade of grass. You also came clean to Brady Black, the man you framed for your crime. Yeah. Brady did tell us about the little talk you two had downstairs in holding.

You know, I’m sorry, but I don’t recall having any of the aforementioned conversations.

I have dealt with my fair share of contemptible, remorseless, despicable people sitting in that very chair. And you, Ms. Cook, are right up there with the worst of them.

Ugh, please, EJ, spare us your righteous indignation because when it comes to moral superiority, you are standing on a house of cards.

Trask, what are you doing here?

I’m here to stop you from badgering this woman without the benefit of counsel. Fiona, don’t say another word.

You’re representing this sociopath?

Mm-hmm.

Don’t you already have your hands full helping my sister run my family’s business into the ground?

Kristen’s doing quite well as DiMera’s CEO, which you will find out soon. But I’ll remind you that my contract allows me to take outside clients, especially poor, defenseless women who are being railroaded by patriarchal misogynists.

Okay. I’ll choose to ignore the insults. But I will give you the opportunity to argue the merits of your wholly baseless accusation. How is Ms. Cook being railroaded?

It’s simple. My client is being accused of a crime she didn’t commit. She’s innocent, so I demand her release immediately.

I’ll leave you two to talk.

Justin’s right. You can’t do this.

Sarah, sweetheart, I–

No, it would be such a huge mistake to hand over Titan to Kristen DiMera.

Sarah, please, come on. Listen to me. Just tell me you understand that I’m doing this for you.

I don’t understand. I don’t. Victor left you his company because he saw himself in you. If your father was alive, it would kill him to see you hand it over to that viper.

You’re absolutely right. But you’re also right when you say that Victor saw himself in me. And we both know that if– if it was Maggie’s health that–that was at risk, Victor would move heaven and Earth. He would go to hell and back to save her, wouldn’t he?

Yeah, he would. But I am not dying. And it’s not like we need this serum to save my life. Love… you know that I have accepted the fact that I will never walk again. And I’m gonna live with that.

Darling… I know how hard you’ve tried to do just that– to learn to live with it, to accept that you’ll never walk again. And I’ve seen the brave face that you put on for me and for everyone else. But no matter how courageous you are, I– I also see what a struggle it is for you. So I couldn’t live with myself if I knew that there was– if there was something that I could do to end that struggle, to end your suffering, and instead I just chose to cling on to some empire.

Yes, I’ve struggled. And I have suffered. And I count my blessings that that accident didn’t take my life. And I have– I have so much love and support from you and my mom and our daughter. I am lucky in so many ways. And I’m getting stronger every single day. As a doctor, I’ve seen people with disabilities go on and live full, vibrant lives. And I know that I can be one of those people. Baby, you do not have to do this. Please, just call Kristen, and tell that blackmailing bitch that the deal is off and you’ve changed your mind. [soft dramatic music] Please.

What is with the long face, little brother?

I’m fine.

No, you’re not. You’re in a terrible mood, and I assume it’s because of your impending divorce. Is Gabi taking you for all you’re worth?

The settlement’s fair.

Well, then what’s the problem?

The problem is… I’m not sure I want a divorce. [suspenseful music]

So where exactly do things stand between you and Stefan?

Well… he told me he wanted to file for divorce, then hired Melinda Trask to draw up the papers.

Trask is a shark.

So is my lawyer. I’m not worried about that.

All right. So it won’t be long until your marriage is over. [somber music]

Right, I guess.

But you don’t seem too happy about that. I thought you wanted out.

I did.

So has that changed? Are you done with Stefan? Or do you want him back?

I know I’m the one who called the time of death in our marriage, but… I can’t help but wonder if I made the right decision. [somber music]

Now, Gabi… it’s understandable that you feel conflicted about ending your marriage. Why wouldn’t you? You went into it hoping that it would be like Tía Hilda and Tío Gabriel’s– till death do us part. Now, we were raised to believe that marriage is a sacred bond.

Yeah.

Yeah.

But Stefan was the one to break our vows. I was so hurt and so angry when I found out he slept with Ava while I was rotting away in Statesville. All I wanted to do was hurt him back… by sleeping with his brother. [sighs] Not telling you anything you don’t already know?

No, you’re not. But I am getting the impression that you are not sure you want to end your marriage to Stefan.

No. I guess I’m not sure of that either. And Stefan seemed so sad the last time we spoke. I’m not sure this is what he really wants either.

Are you seriously considering staying married to Gabi after she slept with our brother?

Gabi only slept with EJ to get back at me for sleeping with Ava, which was a one-time, stupid, drunken mistake.

Yes, it was. But you’re still in love with Gabi. [soft dramatic music]

I never stopped loving her. Nope. Not for one second.

Well, I mean, who am I to judge? Lord knows I– I know all about not being able to move on from an ex. You know what? To hell with those divorce papers. If you are not % sure that you and Gabi are done, then tear them up, hmm? And get your wife back.

You can’t hand over your family business to Kristen.

Sarah, you just– you don’t understand.

I do understand. I know better than anyone what it meant to you to finally be acknowledged by Victor.

Even though he couldn’t bring himself to do it until he died.

Hey.

I am the one who will spend the rest of my life in this chair if you don’t make a deal with the devil. Doesn’t what I want matter?

Of course what you want matters, darling. It’s–it’s just, I’m not only doing this for you. I’m doing it for Victoria too. Don’t you want to be able to run and play with her, to walk her to school on her first day of kindergarten, to stand and cheer when she graduates high school? Don’t you want to go back to work and not in this wheelchair? [somber music]

Of course I want all of those things.

And I want those things for you.

Yes, but at what cost? I’m not just gonna sit and watch you hand over your birthright– Victoria’s birthright– to Kristen.

Victoria’s birthright is not Titan. It’s you– you, healthy and happy. I owe Victor nothing. I owe you everything.

Xander–

Darling, for years, all I cared about was earning Victor’s approval, finding my rightful place at Titan. But then I met you. And you saw me for– for who I am, and you gave me your love freely. And all you ever wanted from me was honesty. Whereas my own father couldn’t bring himself to love me while he was alive. And everything he left for me after he died– well, it doesn’t measure up to what you’ve given me in our life together. So I’m sorry, darling. Your wishes do matter to me, but my mind’s made up. When Kristin gets here, I’m– I’m going to give her Titan– lock, stock, and barrel– in exchange for the serum that can help you walk again.

Melinda, need I remind you that your client ran over Sarah Kiriakis and left her to die? That poor woman is paralyzed. She will never walk again. So there is no way in hell I am allowing Ms. Cook to walk out of here. I mean, the woman confessed, for God’s sake.

I did no such thing.

Fine. I don’t need a confession. I have two eyewitnesses– the victim and Brady Black. And both Sarah and Brady can positively identify you were the one who drove the car that struck her that night and are both willing to testify to that fact in open court.

EJ, that testimony and $ might get you bus fare to Chicago, but it most certainly won’t get you a conviction. You know it, and I know it. [dramatic music]

Don’t you have a physical therapy appointment this afternoon?

Oh, come on. You know I do. You’ve been more on top of my rehab schedule than I have. But you have not answered my question. Are you ready to end your marriage to Stefan? [soft dramatic music]

I thought I was. But if I’m being honest, I’m not sure.

Yeah. Well, do you want some advice from someone Tía Hilda calls “unlucky in love?”

Sure.

Okay. Give yourself the time that you need. Get out of your head, and listen to your heart. And then… you will know what to do.

[tender music]

Hey.

[panting]

“Whatever else there is… “means nothing much, you see, because you are everything to me.”

So beautiful.

Happy anniversary, my darling.

Happy anniversary, mi amor.

I’ve been dreaming about this for months.

So have I. – Thank you. I know I’ve been trying to push you away, and it feels really good to have you here with me.

I will always be here for you whenever you need me.

Promise?

I promise.

Make love to me, Stefan.

[sighs]

You know what, Melinda? To hell with your damn papers.

I am certain, Ms. Trask, that I have a strong case to make against your client. So we’ll just have to let the process play itself out, let a jury decide. But if you seriously think that any one of a dozen of your client’s peers will be unsympathetic to Dr. Sarah Horton Kiriakis, the granddaughter of the pillars of our community, the loving mother of an adorable one-year-old, when she wheels herself into court to testify to the fact that her lush of a mother-in-law ran her over, then you are less of an attorney than I first thought.

If anyone is less of an attorney here, it’s you, Elvis, because you seem to be forgetting that Sarah Kiriakis has also changed her story about what happened that night multiple times, making her, well, a not-so-credible witness. And as for Brady Black, the man’s an addict, obviously, and has been accused of, among other things, killing his uncle in a drunken rage and throwing him into the river.

If you’re referring to his Uncle Philip, the lunatic who faked his own death and then framed Brady, much in the same way that your client did.

Be that as it may, Brady Black’s testimony in this case is certain to offer reasonable doubt after reasonable doubt. The man was so intoxicated on the night of the accident that he even believed that he was driving the car. You see, he has changed his story also. So how can anyone be certain that he wasn’t really the person who hit Sarah?

You know he didn’t do it.

[scoffs]

Brady will testify that he woke up in the passenger seat of the car next to Fiona, who was behind the wheel. And he will also testify to the fact that she said that she had just hit someone.

Do you even hear yourself, EJ? When a jury hears the testimony of your two wholly unreliable witnesses, they will not even deliberate. They will acquit my client immediately. But hey, you want to take this to trial, be my guest. I will take great pleasure in tearing apart their testimony and your already tainted legal reputation. I’ll rip it to shreds. So do yourself a favor. Save the City of Salem the expense. Save yourself the embarrassment, and cut Fiona loose now.

I appreciate everything you said. I really do. I know that your heart is in the right place and that you’re doing this for me. But I cannot believe that you are giving Kristen what she wants without a fight.

[gasps] Did somebody say my name?

Kristen, how could you do this? You know what? That’s a really, really stupid question. You have no conscience. I know that better than anyone.

Sarah, I really don’t understand why you’re so angry about this. I mean, this is great for you, great for me. I am here to make a mutually beneficial business transaction.

Mm-hmm. Is that what you call trading my ability to walk with my husband and daughter’s birthright? God, your father must be so proud of you, looking up at you from the bowels of hell.

Oh, I’m gonna take that as a thank-you. So I’m just gonna say, you’re welcome. [tense music]

Move.

She is going to thank me, Xander, when she can walk. Now, do we have a deal or not?

[suspenseful music] * *

You’ll pay for this, Trask.

For what? Being a better lawyer than you are? Oh, I’m not gonna waste a second worrying about your threats of retribution because you are going to be so busy explaining to Mayor Price how you let yet another case slip through your fingers. Ciao.

[sighs]

Fiona?

Oh, hello, Sarah. [tense music]

What are you doing out of jail?

Oh, the D.A. dropped the charges. Your mother-in-law is now a free woman.

[knocking on door]

Stefan. Oh, my God.

You know, from what I hear… you never gave up on anything or anyone you ever wanted. I am your son, after all. I’d like to think I have that fighting spirit in me. And for that reason, I am not giving up on my marriage to Gabi. No, no. [soft dramatic music] I’m gonna fight for the woman that I love.

Yeah. [grunting] [dramatic music]

Well, I wouldn’t get too excited about that. I mean, there is a second vial, and it needs to be combined with that one to actually heal Sarah’s spinal injury. It’s just in case you tried to renege on the terms of our deal.

So when do we get the second vial?

Once your shares of Titan Industries are successfully transferred to me. [laughs] Now… [clears throat] Do you need a pen, Xander?

No, I’ve got one. Let’s get this over with.

I wouldn’t bother signing those, Xander.

Don’t try and talk me out of this now, Justin.

No, that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to let you both know that someone has filed an injunction prohibiting the transfer of Xander’s Titan stock to you. [dramatic music]

What the hell is going on, Xander?

Your guess is as good as mine. Justin, who filed the injunction? It’d have to be a family member, but–well, it can’t have been Alex. We all know he’s not Victor’s son.

But I am.

Philip.

Transcript provided by Suzanne

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Good morning.

Well… you seem to be in a good mood.

Yes, well, that might be– drum roll, please– because Marlena fell down the elevator shaft. On camera, of course… [chuckles] Which means, with or without Hattie Adams’ histrionics and all, Charlemagne will finally get that… rich, dramatic death scene she so richly deserves. [both chuckle]

I am glad to hear it. And you’re right. A pivotal scene like that should never be played off-camera.

No, never. Are you kidding me? A moment like that, the death of a beloved character– that’s the kind of scene an audience tunes in for. [dramatic music]

What are you talking about? My God, Johnny, why would you think that Alex and I are having sex?

Because you liked it so much the first time.

Johnny, I have no idea what you’re–

I saw you, Chanel, okay? I saw the two of you the other day in here going at it.

Okay, Johnny, this is crazy, okay? Alex and I would never–

I said I saw you, Chanel! And you’ve been lying to me ever since.

Johnny, Johnny, you– please, please, listen to me.

Why–why should I? It’s just going to be more lies. Just like the day after I saw you with him, you told me you were going to the bakery. Well, I went there and you were nowhere to be found.

I was running an errand.

Oh, at Alex’s apartment?

What?

Yeah, no, I heard you guys talking about how I was– I was never going to find out, how clueless I am. I bet you guys had a nice big laugh about– about how stupid I am.

Oh, my God.

What a fool your husband is.

Johnny, Johnny, this is not at all what you think.

No, it’s exactly what I think, okay? And don’t even bother trying to deny it. I-I refuse to believe another word that comes out of your mouth, because you’re a cheating slut. Even now… you’re lying right to my face. I can’t believe it. I can’t even look at you.

[door closes]

Mom, did you forget? This is my room.

Well, the maids were cleaning mine.

Oh. Well, the audition went great. Thank you for asking.

Mm.

Now I just have to wait and hear back.

Well, you know what I’m waiting to hear? Whose wedding ring this is.

[scoffs softly]

Well?

Well, what?

Well, you said that you met a man at a bar last night, so I can only assume that this belongs to him. What you neglected to tell me was that he was a married man.

Why’s this taking so long? Oh. all: Surprise!

W-what is this? Is this–is–

Happy birthday, Johnny boy. Are you surprised or what? I mean, you better be, because Chanel worked really hard on all this. All for you, buddy.

Surprise.

all: * Happy birthday to you *

I bet you’re feeling pretty stupid right now, because you should be. all: * Happy birthday, dear Johnny * * Happy birthday to you *

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

As much as I’m elated that Charlemagne has finally shuffled off the mortal coil thanks to Marlena… it’s still concerning to me that we’re left with a huge, star-shaped hole in the center of our canvas. I mean, who’s going to go toe to toe with Kassandra? I mean, it’s not like we can go online and, you know, find someone–find a capricious, fiery actress, a soap-opera diva.

I might have a solution… if we bring back Lorna…

[groans]

And if you agree to play her.

Okay, so I know exactly where you’re going, and I am more of a back-of-the-house kind of gal. I’d rather solve problems behind the camera, okay? Not make them in front of the camera.

That’s fair enough.

So, speaking of troublemakers, though, how are the auditions going for the Faith and Arrow spoiler? The–the Regan character?

Well, we are off to a promising start. I just directed a very good audition with an intriguing young actress.

Really?

Hmm.

Well, who was it?

Nancy Wesley’s daughter, Joy. [dramatic music]

Really, Mother? Must you be so…provincial?

“Provincial”? Joy, what are we, in a Jane Austen novel?

If only.

[scoffs] Just be honest with me. Is this or is this not a man’s wedding ring?

Let’s say it is. So what?

“So what”? [scoffs] May I remind you once again how my own marriage ended?

Not necessary, but go ahead.

Fine. It was because your father, a married man, was cheating on me over and over and over again.

In fact… it happened right here in this very hotel… [sighs] With that loathsome Leo Stark. All the while, your mother was sitting at home playing the dutiful wife… all the while being unaware that she was being betrayed.

The difference is, I haven’t betrayed anyone, Mother. For one thing, I’m not married.

Oh, so you’re not your father in this scenario. You’re that loathsome Leo Stark. Oh, Joy, how I pity that poor man’s wife sitting at home, not– not aware that she’s being betrayed.

all: * Happy birthday, dear Johnny * * Happy birthday to you * [applause]

* And many more * [laughter and applause] [dramatic music]

What are you waiting for, man? You gonna come blow these suckers out or what?

Make a wish first.

[laughs]

Go ahead. Make a wish.

[exhales sharply]

Yay!

Yeah. [applause] I got to say, your wife really outdid herself with this cake, man, huh? She must kind of love you or something.

Anyway, birthday boy gets to cut the first piece.

Careful with that, Alex. I-I don’t know if I’d trust him with that knife.

[laughs] Why–why is that?

Because he may or may not stab you with it.

He’s going to stab me with it? Why would he– why would he want to s– why would he want to stab me with it?

Well, apparently… you and I are sleeping together. [people gasp]

O-okay, now, everybody listen to me and listen– listen hard. Now, I don’t know what the hell is going on here, but I do know one thing. My baby girl is no cheater.

Johnny, what the– Where is this even coming from, bro? Why would you think that Chanel and I are sleeping together?

Why? Why? Because I saw you guys, that’s why.

What are you talking about?

This is crazy. You couldn’t have seen us because it never happened.

Oh, really? I wasn’t the only one. Seth saw it, too.

Well–

What? When?

When? The other day. Remember, I ran into you in the hallway. You said, don’t go in that room because Arrow and Faith are having sex in there. [dramatic music]

Well, I don’t recall saying it that bluntly, but, yeah, I remember.

You see?

But that’s not Faith. That’s Faith.

I didn’t know that Nancy’s daughter was auditioning.

Bonnie insisted that we give her a chance.

Oh. So it went well.

Yeah, it went, uh, really well. You know, Chanel– Chanel and–and Joy had this– this antagonistic energy.

Well–ha– that’s exactly what we need. Huh. Do you think we found our home-wrecker? Do we have our Regan?

Well, I do think that Joy Wesley could be a contender.

Well, what do you have to say to that, dear?

[chuckles] What I have to say is, you have no idea what you’re talking about, Mom. This guy’s situation is nothing like yours and Daddy’s. For one thing, his wife is cheating on him.

Oh, so you think that makes it better? Joy, have you not heard the expression, two wrongs do not make a–

Right. Yes, yes, of course I have. But it’s not like this woman is some Stepford wife waiting for her husband to return home to give him his slippers or whatever. It’s not so black and white.

[chuckles] I am well aware of the gray areas.

What does that even mean?

It means that… no matter what his wife has done, it doesn’t give the man a right to sleep around.

And you just assume that he did sleep with someone?

Uh, well, am I wrong, or am I right? Are you telling me that you didn’t just find that in a Happy Meal?

[sighs]

Come on, Joy, just be honest with me. Did you or did you not sleep with this man?

[sighs]

But she– No, wait. I-I thought you meant–

Oh, I can see that our birthday boy has been rendered speechless, so I’ll take the lead here. As it so happens… Stephanie isn’t Faith. In fact, she isn’t even an actress. She’s our publicist. [clicking tongue]

But wait. I saw you two. Weren’t you… rehearsing?

Yes, Stephanie and I were rehearsing.

Only because Chanel was running late.

And got a little carried away. Got a little caught up in the moment. That’s all.

O-okay, so wait, wait. Let me get this straight. When you told me that you saw Arrow and Faith going at it and I walked in, I opened the door, I-I actually walked in on… Alex and Stephanie?

Chanel, I-I-I don’t know what to say.

Yeah, it’s probably best that you don’t say anything… because as my mama taught me…

Best to not speak with your mouth full.

[cake thuds]

Are you not quite ready to hand the role of Regan to Joy?

[chuckles] As I said, she’s a contender.

Ah.

But I would like to see some other actors. Oh, Paulina. I-I-I didn’t know you were getting here so– so early for our lunch date. [dramatic music]

Well, Abraham, it’s been, you know, a day of, I guess you’d say… unexpected events.

I’m–I’m sorry, this is, uh, Chanel’s– Chanel is throwing this big bash for Johnny for his birthday on set. And I’m–I’m–I’m sorry I didn’t make it. So how was it? Was he surprised?

Oh, he was. Matter of fact, we all were.

Mm. This is so flipping delicious. Ah.

Leo, what are you doing?

What? We cannot let this delicious cake go to waste.

[scoffs] Jeez.

Mmm. You think this is gluten-free?

What, do you have a gluten allergy?

No. Here, you got to try this.

No, I–

Try it.

What the hell?

Oh. Mmm.

Oh. Oh, my God.

Right? Right? This is so much better than the cake my dad made for me when I turned seven.

Mm, what was wrong with the cake he made you?

Well, besides the fact that he baked it at, like, , degrees, it was so dry you could barely choke it down, he scribbles “Happy Ninth, Junior” in the frosting.

Honey, he didn’t know how old you were?

And often got my name wrong. But look at me now, hmm? Eating this delicious cake, head-writing a TV show. Although my childhood trauma is like a diamond mine, Bonnie, I’m like a little miner boy– overalls on, shovel in hand, schmutz all over my face.

Poor little Leo. [chuckles] Mmm, mmm. You know what? We shouldn’t be doing this. We should not be gorging ourselves like this.

Why not?

Because the baker just got accused of infidelity.

Could’ve been worse.

How?

She actually could have been cheating on him.

All right, you’re right. Cheers. Mm. Oh. Oh!

[sighs]

Well… what do you have to say? Joy, clearly, you brought this man, whoever he was, back to your room.

Whoa, okay. Not having this conversation with my mother.

Honey, I just don’t want you to get h–

What? Get hurt?

Yes, get hurt. From your youthful vantage point, this may not seem like a big deal, but… [both sigh] You’re my daughter, and I love you.

Oh, please. You don’t care about me. You didn’t even want me in the first place.

So Chanel goes and stuffs the cake right into his face and, you know, then storms out of there with Johnny right on her heels.

Hmm. Whoa, that does not sound like a fun party.

No.

No, it was a disaster. Oh, and, you know, I just so wanted to just go to my baby girl and, you know, just give her a hug, tell her how wonderful she is. And then, you know, I thought, you know, it might be best to give them some alone time.

Well, that’s all because Johnny thought he saw Alex… sleeping with Chanel.

When he was actually with Stephanie.

Yes, that is why it happened.

[sighs] Okay, if you’ll excuse me, I think I need to go do some damage control before “Body & Soul” turns into the set of “Caligula.”

Mm.

[exhales deeply]

Get out of my way.

No, Chanel.

Get out.

Just wait. Just wait for a second. All right, listen… listen, I just want to tell you–

What? That you’re sorry for calling me a cheating slut? Imagine calling someone you love something like that and right before you walk into the surprise party that they threw for you. Oh, wait, no, you don’t have to imagine.

Look, please, Chanel, just try to understand where I’m coming from, all right?

Seth told me that he saw Arrow and Faith– Arrow and Faith–having sex in a hospital room. And I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it. But I looked in, and I saw Alex in bed on top of someone, and I just–I-I-I got so upset that I-I just took off.

Yeah, and you decided to assume the worst, instead of just– I don’t know–asking me.

You’re right, Chanel. You’re absolutely right. I should have asked you. I should have just asked you, but I–

But what, Johnny?

Because I saw you later, all right? And your–and your back had, you know, gone out, so I thought–

So you thought– [laughing] You thought it was from a sex injury? I told you I was tying my shoe.

But the timing of it all and–and the coincidence… And–and–and then you were just acting like nothing even happened, so I–

Because it hadn’t happened. But whether or not anything did, it didn’t matter to you, did it? No, because you already assumed that it had. And you know why? It’s because you don’t trust me, Johnny, do you?

Hey, can I talk to you for a sec?

Yeah.

I cannot believe that Johnny saw us in bed together.

I know. And the fact that he thought it was Chanel and me?

That’s what makes this whole thing even crazier.

Yeah, but, Steph, it’s not like we expected anybody to see us. We’re consenting adults. We were behind closed doors in a hospital room. Good for us. Plus, Johnny would have never came in if he didn’t think it was, you know, Faith and Arrow.

You know this is all your fault, right?

Wait, what?

Why did you tell Johnny that Faith and Arrow were having sex? I mean, have you–have you seen the real Faith? How could you think that I was her?

I told you, I saw you two running lines. Plus, you look like an actress…

[sighs]

So I just assumed you were.

Yeah, well, I am not an actress. I’m a publicist. And I have sat in on meetings with producers and you, and we were on a Zoom meeting one-on-one.

Yeah, I remember, but Kate and Abe explicitly said that they had to cut overhead. So how was I supposed to know that this wasn’t another belt-tightening measure?

Well, it occurs to me that you think your job is to know things.

Oh, I know things. And one of them being, is I know that the show’s publicist had a romp in the hay with one of its stars on the set! Now, do you think that the producers would like to know that, too? [dramatic music]

Oh, Abe, I feel so bad for you.

Me?

Yes, you. I mean, your–your show hasn’t even started airing yet, and your lead actress and director are fighting because he thought he walked in on her sleeping with her costar?

Yeah. Yeah. Well, tell you who I feel bad for. Johnny and Chanel.

Oh, me too, but… [scoffs] I mean–and I don’t want to lay the blame on anyone here. Obviously, it was a terrible misunderstanding, but, oh, how I wish you hadn’t have had that oh-so-brilliant idea to pair Alex and Chanel in the first place.

Are you laying the blame on me?

O-only in part. I mean, let’s face it. None of this would have happened if you hadn’t gone on and on and on about… what good chemistry those two had and just insisted how damn perfect they’d look together as costars. I mean, come on, now, Johnny’s only flesh and blood. The man got jealous. Who wouldn’t, in his shoes?

You know, being jealous is one thing, but how was I to know that the man had issues and was paranoid and…

Well, well, why not? I mean, as the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Are you– are you referring to–

Mm-hmm, yes, I am referring to that British daddy of his. Yes.

Well, I always thought that Johnny was more evolved than his father.

Chanel, you’re right, okay? Of course I should have trusted you, but–but can you just– Will you try to see this from my perspective?

What perspective is that, Johnny– the one where you thought that you caught me having sex with Alex? Oh, wait, no, sorry, it wasn’t me. It was someone else entirely.

I know, but I also saw you at Alex’s apartment.

Yes, planning your surprise party that he offered to help me with.

Yeah, well, I know that now, don’t I? But on that day, when I saw you in his hallway and I overheard you saying how clueless I was and that you had to keep it a secret from everyone, do you see how I would connect those dots together?

Yes, only because you were connecting the dots to try to make them equal up to me cheating on you, okay? Don’t you understand that all of this so-called evidence only leaned that way because you believed that I would actually cheat on you, my husband, the man that I love more than anyone in this world?

Wait, where’s your… Wedding ring?

Joy, honey, of course I care about you.

Right, you care about me when you need something… like, for instance, bone marrow to save the life of your real daughter, Chloe.

Sweetheart, we’ve gone over this so many times. Of course you’re as real a daughter to us as Chloe is. [scoffs] And though your father and I will be eternally grateful that you were a bone marrow match for Chloe when she was sick… Honey, bone marrow is the least of the reasons we care about you. [sighs] Your being our daughter was the gift of a lifetime.

Joy, sweetheart… please tell me that I am finally getting through to you. I love you.

Joy, please tell me that you believe me.

Fine, you love me. But that doesn’t mean that all of our issues are settled and everything is, you know, magically better between us.

No, I wouldn’t expect that. But as long as you know that I love and care about you…

Fine, I know. And I’m sorry for sending you on a guilt trip.

Oh. It’s okay. I’m used to it.

And now you’re sending me on one.

I’m sorry. I didn’t–

You know, you still haven’t asked me how my audition went.

I was just about to. So how was it?

It was, um–it was good.

Just good?

Actually, it was– went really well, I think. I read with one of the characters on the show. Well, it’s Chanel Dupree, but she plays Faith on the show. Apparently my character is supposed to be after her man. [both chuckle]

Well, that sounds normal for “Body & Soul.” So what did they say?

That they’ll let me know.

That sounds like a successful audition. [gasps] Oh, this calls for a celebratory lunch. Um, and then maybe you can, uh, fill me in on whose wedding ring that is.

Actually, you know, I’ll pass.

Joy, I–

As I told you, I am not discussing this with my mother. [dramatic music]

Where are you going?

For a walk. [door opens, closes]

Well… where’s your wedding ring, Johnny?

Look, I-I took it off.

When? When what? When you decided that the marriage was over because you thought that you caught me in bed with Alex?

No, okay? It wasn’t like that.

Oh, no? Then what was it like, hmm? I told you from day one that I am not into Alex, period, end of story. But what did you think? That he would just get me so turned on that I would just, oh, my God, cheat on my husband who I love so much because some guy took his shirt off?

Look, I-I-I know, okay? I’m sorry. I am sorry, Chanel. I-I don’t know what I was thinking. I-I feel like a fool. Please–

Don’t touch me.

Chanel.

I said don’t– Oh, my God. I cannot believe that I went out of my way to throw this big surprise party for my husband, only for him to look at me in the face and call me a cheating slut.

Chanel.

Get out.

I said get out!

Okay.

[door closes]

You know… maybe–

Maybe–maybe what?

Well… maybe as things calm down, Johnny and Chanel will learn that this was just a misunderstanding.

[sighs] I wish I had your optimism, Abraham, but you were not there to see that look on my daughter’s face. Johnny hurt her badly. And when my daughter’s hurting, you better watch out.

I’ve been thinking of switching astrology signs.

What? You can’t do that. It’s when you were born, silly.

So? I’m tired of being a Pisces. I was thinking about trying on… Gemini maybe or Virgo.

Mm.

They’re very organized, those Virgos. I could use some of that.

I know what you mean. [chuckles] Mmm.

It’s a shame to waste all of this cake. I’ll see if I can find an intern to bring it to the break room.

Does this mean…

We have to eat this cake in the break room?

No, that we have to share. I don’t think so. I have a better idea.

Kate, I can explain.

Okay, that won’t be necessary. Paulina already gave me the details.

Kate, I-I can’t even explain to you how sorry I am. What happened was completely unprofessional, and I assure you that it won’t happen again.

Yes, I am sure you regret what happened, and I accept your apology. Unfortunately, it did happen. We are about to launch a show. And I can’t have it get out there that our publicist, who is responsible for promoting the image of the show, is sleeping with an actor… [sighs] On a set, no less.

Right.

[sighs]

So… I assume this means I’m fired.

Kate, please, you cannot fire Stephanie. Come on, this was not her fault. It was completely mine. I asked her to run lines with me, and we just– we got a little carried away.

You certainly did. And by rights, I should fire you both for being shamelessly indiscreet, for embarrassing the whole company and negatively affecting a fellow cast member and director whom you both know.

For which we are both very sorry.

So am I. [sighs] But you can keep your jobs. I’m not going to fire you.

Oh.

You’re not?

No. But consider this your first and final warning. For now, you two… stay the hell away from each other. [dramatic music]

[mouth full] You know, this might be all Hattie Adams’ fault.

Um, I didn’t quite catch that.

Mm. [normal voice] I said this might be all Hattie Adam’s fault.

You mean Johnny finding out– or thinking, at least– that Chanel was cheating on him?

That’s what I mean. After all, the woman did put a curse on the show when she got fired.

So I heard.

Happened to me once, years ago. I went to grab the last container of garlic hummus at Whole Foods, and this petite woman walking an affenpinscher with beady little eyes stared right through my soul.

What kind of curse did she put on you?

I’d rather not say, but this curse, this Hattie Adams curse, I think it’s real. And who knows? Maybe something truly terrible is going to befall you at any moment. [gasps] Or me.

Well, well, well, if it isn’t the little home-wrecker.

Exhibit A.

Johnny. Hi.

Uh… [clears throat] Joy.

I’m, uh–I’m glad that I ran into you. You, um… you left this in my room last night.

[breathing heavily]

Where’s Johnny?

Gone.

Chanel, honey. Oh, honey, are you okay?

[breathing heavily] No. No, Mom, I’m not.

Oh, baby.

[crying]

Recap written by Suzanne

Hope and Carter discuss how Steffy shot down his idea of bringing back the jewelry line with Ivy. Hope urges him to speak to Ridge. He says that Ridge has shot his ideas down in the past. Hope thinks that maybe he’s been too nice. She supports his ideas and says that his voice matters as COO. He’s grateful for her support.

Will and Zende talk briefly about Zende’s new designs. When Zende mentions wanting to talk to Hope about accessories, Will asks him if he means jewelry. Zende hasn’t heard anything about a jewelry line at Forrester, nor has heard about anyone named Electra (which seems strange, since he’s a Forrester). Zende wonders if the young woman, Electra, was teasing Will. He warns Will not to get too distracted by the women there. After Zende leaves, Will has a flashback to meeting Electra.

Steffy and Ridge catch up about how she’s worried about how Carter has been acting, and she tells Ridge about Carter bringing Ivy and Electra there to talk her into reviving the jewelry line. Ridge listens intently as she says that she vetoed the idea. Later, they call Zende in to talk about how the line is failing. He’s enthusiastic about his designs, but Steffy points out that they’re losing buyers.

Hope and Carter arrive; Steffy mentions that she may have to cut Hope For The Future. With Hope’s support, Carter speaks up about moving forward with mergers and acquisitions into a Forrester luxury umbrella. He urges them to think on a grand scale instead of cutting lines. Ridge looks intrigued.

Ivy and Electra visit Eric (Ivy is his niece). They all hug. Electra tells Eric that she’s interested in both fashion and jewelry. After they talk about the jewelry, Eric asks Ivy if she’s been in touch with Quinn. She says she hasn’t. She learned what she needed to from her and has since gone in her own direction. She tells Eric that Steffy vetoed the idea of Forrester bring her and the jewelry line back. Eric thinks that it’s a great idea; he promises to speak to Steffy and Ridge about it. He also invites them to stay, saying that they’re Forresters, and this is their home, too. There are more hugs.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[dramatic music]

[groans] Oh, Chanel, hey.

Oh, I’ve done it again.

Done what again?

I’m interrupting, aren’t I? You and Stephanie–

You’re not interrupting anything. Stephanie’s not here.

And for the fundraiser, we’re going to need you to stick to these talking points. We’ve uploaded your speech to the prompter, but I know sometimes you like to–

Go off book?

Mm-hmm.

Well, I like to feel out the crowd. And if I’m bombing, I– I’m diverting to my, you know, natural–

Which–which is why I’ve also included a list of no-nos. I think it’s best if we just avoid these issues.

Oh, good morning, ladies.

Excuse me, Leo. We’re having a business meeting here.

And I’m sure it’s very important, but this is an emergency. We are having a major, major PR snafu at “Body & Soul” that I need you on top of, like, pronto. It’s a sex scandal. [jazzy music]

Hey, boss.

Oh, Bonnie. Bonnie, look, I only have a minute. We’re–we’re casting a new character, and–

Oh, yes, I know. Regan Holloway, yes. You can just cancel those auditions, actually. See, I’ve been reading ahead, and I know all about the interloper who’s supposed to come between Arrow and Faith. Great stuff, by the way.

Bonnie, I–

And I have found the perfect girl to play the part. She totally embodies that whole wild-child vibe, if you know what I mean. And to top it off, she is drop-dead gorgeous.

OK, OK. Who is she?

Chloe Lane’s little sister, Joy Wesley. [knocking]

Joy, wake up! [knocking] [footsteps pattering] [sighs]

Jeez! Are you trying to wake up the whole hotel?

I thought I was trying to wake up the dead.

I was asleep, Mother.

Oh. Well, it’s no wonder. [chuckles] I knocked on your door at : a.m., too, and you weren’t here. You obviously found time to find out about all the nightlife here in Salem. So where were you last night?

[sighs] [dramatic music]

Hey.

Hey.

Happy birthday.

Thank you, Grandma.

I spoke to Allie. She sends her love.

Oh, that’s– [clears throat] That’s nice.

Anyway… oh, I–I got you a birthday cupcake, deliciously made by your loving wife.

What is wrong?

Oh, nothing, nothing at all.

Well, somehow I don’t believe that.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Joy Wesley. No, not on my list.

Oh, no, I know. See, Abe, she came all the way from New York City just for the chance. And really, it would be a shame not to give her the opportunity to show you what she’s got because, Abe, this girl is talented, very talented.

Does she have any experience?

Oh, yes, I’m sure her résumé is very impressive. In fact, Nancy said she was a born performer.

Look, Bonnie–

No, listen, Abe, look at it this way. See, you gave me a chance, right? And I had zero experience. But you, sir, you saw my raw talent. And it worked out pretty good, all right?

[chuckles] Yes, Bonnie, we are– we’re very lucky to have you.

Thank you, Abe. See, you, sir, have a great eye for talent. And I know that you are gonna see right away whether she has it or not. And, Abe, between you and me, the girl could really use a confidence boost. You know, she needs a little direction in her life.

Bonnie, you know that this is a business. And we just can’t afford to have any more difficult personalities on our staff.

Oh, oh, Abe. No, no, no, no, no, I didn’t mean that. No, Joy is an angel, an angel. Very low-maintenance, extremely low. In fact, I don’t want to diss my friend or anything, but I think Nancy might be the difficult personality in that relationship. Anyway, Abe, seriously, if you could just give Joy a shot. And if she bombs, mm, so be it. I will never mention it again. [jazzy music]

When am I supposed to see her?

Well, looks like you have a little time before you start. How about right now?

[sighs]

You know, Mother, the whole point of having two rooms is to not have you all up in my business every second of every day.

[chuckles] And just who’s paying for those two rooms, Miss Joy Wesley?

[sighs]

Where were you last night?

I went to a bar, OK? No big deal.

Big deal– you may have an audition today.

Chill. Mom, I didn’t get trashed or anything. I’ll be fine. I was just…hanging out.

Hanging out? With who?

[sighs] You were just– you don’t know anybody. You were just a baby when we moved away.

It’s a bar, Mom. I met somebody.

Who? Are you even listening to me?

No, not really. And–and no offense, but you are aware that other people have problems as well, right?

Wow. I thought Midwesterners were supposed to be friendly. Sorry for trying to have a conversation.

Wait.

[sighs] I’m Johnny. What’s your name?

Joy.

Hey, Joy. Welcome to Salem.

Just some guy. [dramatic music]

I’m fine, really. I just–I’m a bit distracted, I guess. I was up all night blocking the scenes for today.

Oh, sure. Well, I–I hope you find some time to enjoy your special day.

Thanks, Grandma. Or should I say Charlemagne?

Oof. You heard.

I did. In fact, I’m gonna be the one who’s directing you today, which I’m very excited about.

Well, that makes one of us. Actually, I’m only doing it because Leo talked me into it because I guess Hattie refused to– to die and then just stormed off the set. Oh, that must have been a very exciting day for you.

Oh, yeah, yeah, especially when she cursed the show on her way out the door.

Uh, I don’t think you want to go in there.

Why not?

Well, Arrow and Faith… they got a little carried away.

What do you mean?

I poked my head in there a little while ago, and at first, I thought, oh, they’re rehearsing. But then I realized they were…

In a steamy love scene for real.

Actually, I think her curse might already be working.

Why do you say that?

Sorry, maybe I shouldn’t have brought up you and Stephanie.

Ah, you’re fine. It’s not like it’s a sore subject or anything. We didn’t really get a chance to talk after–

After I clumsily walked in on you two?

Well, luckily, you walked in on our goodbyes, and we had already finished the–you know. Anyway, Stephanie left so quickly, I don’t know where the hell we stand.

Only where you lie down.

Ha, ha, ha, ha. I see we’ve reached the teasing level of our friendship. OK.

Sorry, sorry.

Mm.

OK, so you were saying.

I was saying…

Mm-hmm.

Stephanie and I just want to be friends.

Uh-huh.

We just keep on– Go ahead. I know you want to interject.

No, no, I’m being respectful.

OK. It’s very unlike you.

[laughs] Look, Alex, just– I think it’s really simple. Do you want to be friends with benefits with her or not? Or maybe you want something more? Yes? No? Maybe?

I don’t know what she wants.

OK, well, here’s a bright idea. Ask her.

All right. Maybe I should talk to her.

Mm-hmm.

A sex scandal? And the show hasn’t even hit the airwaves yet.

Oh, we don’t say airwaves. It’s a streamer. We say interwebs. It hasn’t hit the interwebs.

Well, it sounds like it’s hitting the fan. Oh, this is the last thing Abraham needs right now.

Believe me, I know, hence my rude interruption. Steph, we have to nip this in the bud, like, now.

OK, Leo, before we go to DEFCON , what is this supposed scandal?

Well, I may not be Lady Whistleblower anymore, but this little sniffer can catch the first whiff of something newsworthy, especially when said newsworthiness is of the naughty and titillating variety. And I have it on good authority that Alex Kiriakis is having sex with one of his costars. [gasps]

Just some guy, Mother. I’m sure you don’t know him. Did you talk to your friend who works on “Body & Soul”?

Oh! Yes, I did. I talked to Bonnie, and she’s going to try to arrange it with Abe Carver. He’s the producer.

Great. So I have the job.

No, you don’t have the job, Miss Entitled. You have to audition. But Bonnie said that she’s gonna try and arrange it. Oh! I just haven’t heard from them yet. [phone beeps] Oh, wait, wait. [gasps] He said yes!

Really?

Really. Oh, and you’re up first.

What? First? What time am I supposed to be there?

Oh, as soon as possible.

Oh, my God. I’m still in my pajamas.

You need to go get dressed and– and knock them dead.

Can I get you something?

No, actually, I came by to– [phone beeps] Oh. Oh, great. Abe needs me to stop by the production offices. I already have so much to do with Johnny’s birthday party, and now this.

Well, what can I do to help? What do you need?

Actually, that’s why I came by.

OK.

I wanted to see if maybe you could stop by Sweet Bits on your way to set and pick up the cake and bring it with you to work. Because I would have done it myself, but then I’m just so swamped with everything. And then Felicity, she didn’t have the cake ready yet. She needed a little more time. And now Abe, he needs me to stop–

I know. I know. You had me at cake, OK? I’m happy to help.

OK. You’re a lifesaver.

I know. I try.

And don’t let on to Johnny, OK?

I also know how surprise parties work, Chanel.

Mm, do you?

Are you sure he hasn’t figured out anything yet?

Yes, I’m sure.

OK, OK.

Although I haven’t seen much of him since production started. I mean, he’s always working super late. And last night, he worked super late. And then this morning, he was gone before I got up. So I haven’t even got a chance to tell him happy birthday yet.

Aww. [dramatic music]

What do you mean, Hattie’s curse is working? Has something happened?

[sighs]

Dr. Evans, my fellow thespian. Well, will you look at us? Isn’t it something?

It is…something, all right.

Well, don’t have too much fun today. We wouldn’t want to lose University Hospital’s top psychiatrist to showbiz.

Or our hospital administrator.

[chuckles] Fear not. I’m just an under-five. That’s industry lingo for five lines of fewer per episode. I’m easing into it.

Well, I don’t have any lines. I just have to take a nosedive down an elevator shaft.

Oh, I know. Word to the wise. Make sure there’s plenty of mattresses down there before you jump.

Hmm.

Oh, Bonnie. Good, you’re here. Would you please show my grandmother to makeup?

Oh, absolutely. Come on, Marlena. I’ll show you the ropes. It’s gonna be so fun.

Yeah. We will catch up a little later?

Sure.

It’s this way.

I didn’t mean to scare Marlena. But unprofessionalism seems to be running rampant around here. Ms. Adams walks off the set. Leo Stark rejects all my alt lines. And I still can’t get over finding Faith and Arrow going at it on the set.

Yeah, yeah, me neither.

Alex is sleeping with somebody at the show?

Did you not hear me? Not just somebody– one of his costars.

I hope you’re not suggesting that it’s my daughter, who is a happily married woman and who is planning her husband’s surprise birthday party as we speak.

Madam Mayor, Your Highness, I am not suggesting Chanel or Bonnie or Hattie, for that matter. There are plenty of other actresses who could have fallen victim to… the hotness of Alex Kiriakis. I mean, that rocking body, those bedroom eyes.

All right, all right, Leo, how do you even know that this is true? It could just be some crew rumor.

Oh, no, no, no. It is no rumor. My sources are never wrong. And I mean, given Alex’s reputation–

Yeah, well, I don’t think you should be talking smack about anybody’s reputation, Leo Stark. Besides, what’s so scandalous? Costars, they–they date, fall in love all the time. Who knows? These two could wind up being married for years.

I suppose, but the problem is that this hookup happened on set. This poor stagehand had the very unenviable task of, well… cleanup on aisle five, if you catch my drift.

Oh.

Anyway, point is, Steph, we have got to make this disappear because a scandal like this, frankly, could take down the whole show.

[sighs]

Ugh, how could I be so stupid? This is exactly– exactly why I didn’t want to get involved with– [dramatic music] Damn it.

Steph.

Alex.

Hey.

Hey. Hey, shouldn’t you be on set?

I’m headed there soon, but first, I’m on a secret mission. I’ve been deputized as the official birthday cake delivery boy. Chanel asked me to pick it up on the way. You want to come with?

No, I–I can’t. I–I have a lot on my plate right now. So I’ll just–I’ll just see you over there.

OK, no problem.

[sighs]

Is everything OK?

Not exactly.

Not exactly?

We can talk about it later.

I think maybe we should talk about it right now.

Fine. I don’t think we should sleep together anymore. Like, ever.

Hey.

Oh, Chanel. Oh, thank you so much.

Mm-hmm.

Thanks for making the time.

Yeah.

I know this was really short notice.

Sure. What’s going on? Is there a problem?

Oh, no, no, no. I would like you to read with an actress we’re auditioning– it’s very short notice…

Mm-hmm.

For Faith’s rival, Regan Holloway.

Hmm, oh, well, OK.

[chuckles] It’s a favor to Bonnie, actually.

Mm, well, I am happy to help.

Well, good. Hey, do you think that you could ask Johnny if he could direct?

Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Remember, today is the day that I’m throwing his surprise party. So I do not want to tip him off in any way.

Yeah. I’m sorry. I–I forgot. So I’ll direct the audition.

All right.

OK.

So you said that Bonnie knows this actress. What’s her name?

I’m Joy.

Oh.

And you are?

I’m Chanel. Nice to meet you.

And cut. [bell rings] All right.

Oh, man. Thank you. [sighs] [indistinct chatter] Please tell me I don’t have to do that again.

You are a one-take wonder, Grandma.

Dr. Evans, thank you so much. Truly, we could not have done that without you.

Well, thanks. But the happy coincidence is that it’s my grandson’s birthday, and I was glad to spend the extra time with him.

Marlena Evans, you should get a Daytime Emmy for Best Scream Ever.

Oh, thanks. You’re very kind. But I’m just glad I didn’t have a lot of dialogue to learn.

It would have been brilliant no matter what.

I think you might be the slightest bit biased.

Ah, just very tasteful.

So I’m late for my day job. So unless you need anything else from me, Mr. Director?

No, no, you are wrapped. So please feel free to get back to your– your normal life, to your very important day job, one that– that actually matters. Johnny, your– your job matters too. A lot of people are really counting on you here.

Thank you, Grandma. And I know that. I’m just–I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. I’m just exhausted.

I know you are. Happy birthday, anyway.

Thank you.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Oh, my love. Hmm. Thanks, everybody.

Bye. And that’s a wrap for me, too, right, Johnny?

Actually, if you and Seth can stay for one more item– it was a last-minute add.

Ugh, not more purple pages.

It’s a pink page, Bonnie, pink. And you don’t even need one. You don’t have any lines.

[laughs] Leo! I don’t know what to say. I mean, wow! I actually have a lot to say here. Have I been upgraded from an under-five to a… whatever you call it?

You call it a day player. And yes, indeed, you have. Congratulations, Seth. [laughter]

Leo, I didn’t hear anything about this.

Oh, don’t worry, Johnny. All of it’s been approved.

Huh.

So, Chanel, I assume you play Faith?

Yeah, I do. And this is Abraham Carver, our executive producer.

Oh, well, it’s nice to meet you, Mr. Carver.

Same here, Joy.

Oh, and just FYI, my character hates your character’s guts. So please, just don’t be offended by any of the insults I am about to hurl your way.

OK, well, I’m sure I’ve heard worse.

All right.

Well, here are the scenes for you two to go over. And please, make it quick. I’m afraid we have a bit of a time crunch.

Right. Oh, hey, thank you for fitting me in. I promise I won’t disappoint. [chuckles]

I like the confidence, Joy.

Well, then I must be a good actor, because I’m really pretty nervous.

Oh, well, don’t be. I’m pretty new at this myself. So let’s just have fun with it, OK?

Fun?

Yeah.

Yep. All right. You know what? I’m just gonna brave it.

Well, are you– are you sure you don’t want to just, like, read over it?

No, no, I’ll be OK. I’ll just–I’ll get into it as we go along.

Well, we can run the scenes really quick.

No, no, Mr. Carver said we’re on a time crunch, so let’s–let’s just jump in. OK, I’m–I’m ready.

Mm. All right, great. Then let’s go ahead. And action.

[clears throat] OK. “Just tell me where you were last night, Regan.”

“I stopped by the Cheatin’ Heart for a drink. Is that all right with you?”

“All depends. Did you run into any interesting people there?”

“Well, if you’re referring to Arrow, yeah, he was there.”

“Right. “Yeah, he told me all about your little encounter. Said you play a mean game of pool.”

“Well, I am flattered by the compliment. “But the truth is, Arrow did beat the pants off me “with his smooth, steady stroke, “swinging through the cue ball like it’s not even there. And he sure does look fine bending over that table.”

“You listen to me, Regan. “You can throw your little schoolyard innuendos “in my face all you want, but you will never shake “my faith in Arrow, because we have been through “a long and tortured road, and we are finally together in every way.”

“Mm, why, I don’t know what you mean by ‘schoolyard innuendo,’ Faith.”

“Well, then let me elaborate, OK? “You see, the only cheatin’ heart “at the Cheatin’ Heart last night was you, “you home-wrecking bitch. So stay away from my man.”

“Hmm. The real question is, can he stay away from me?” [dramatic music]

Oh, and it says that I’m supposed to slap her right here. OK.

[gasps]

Oh, and cut. [laughter]

Nice. Good work.

OK, Seth, I’m gonna have you right here.

If we could just– there, perfect.

Hey, wait a second. You’re not killing me off for real this time, are you?

No, no. Your job is golden. We just killed off Charlemagne. Kassandra’s not going anywhere. This will be the easiest money you ever make. Just…lie back and relax.

Oh.

OK, rehearsal, everybody. Are we ready? And action.

Yes, I know. It’s terrible that Charlemagne plummeted to her death in an elevator shaft. But there’s more of that begonia serum there, isn’t there? Oh, yes, that’s right. Pineview hasn’t seen the last of Charlemagne de la Croix.

Cut.

Perfecto. Magnifique. Wunderbar.

Leo?

Hmm?

What the hell? My grandmother explicitly said this was a one-and-done. And I don’t think Hattie’s gonna be coming back.

Johnny, where is your sense of drama? Charlemagne has been back from the dead at least six times, seven if you count that alien abduction during the writers’ strike. Marlena may say that she is done, but this is Pineview. You never know. So now we have ourselves a little insurance policy, just in case.

OK, yeah. Steph, I’ll respect whatever you want. Where is this coming from?

Look, we agreed. We agreed that we weren’t going to sleep together again. And then we did. And then we did again.

[sighs]

Obviously, we both have conflicting feelings about it. And on top of that, we work together. And, Alex, it’s just– it’s too complicated. And what happened on that set, it was a mistake, a big mistake.

I admit it wasn’t the best idea. But I mean, Steph–

It doesn’t matter anymore anyway because it’s over, OK? Let’s just keep things professional.

OK, yeah, I–I get it. If that’s what you really want.

Yes, that is what I really want.

[sighs] [dramatic music]

So…[chuckles] Did I get the part?

[chuckles] I–I can’t tell you, because I have other people to see today. But we will reach out to you if we’re interested.

Oh. [chuckles] OK.

You may go.

Hey, DeMille, Chanel needs to see you in the hospital room set. She has a question about a scene.

Oh, but we’re not even shooting in there today.

She’s your wife. I don’t know.

OK.

Bed–bed head.

Oh, you mean morgue slab head. [sighs] And since my contract specifically states that I’m extremely claustrophobic, you might have warned me that I would be in that highly confined space for what seemed like an eternity for that last scene.

Oh, I don’t look at actors’ contracts.

Obviously not.

Ixnay on the urneygay.

What?

[clears throat]

Oh! Marlena. Great performance. Have I told you that?

You have.

Oh, yeah. Anyway, how’s Johnny doing? I hear it’s his birthday today?

Yes, it is. Paulina, how nice to see you.

Mayor Price, if you’re here for a doctor’s appointment, you have accidentally wandered into an imaginary land called Pineview.

I am here because Chanel was so busy rushing around this morning, she forgot to take this. And since I made the trip, I thought, you know, I’d give my best to my son-in-law and maybe have a piece of birthday cake.

Hmm. – Dr. Marlena Evans to Trauma . Dr. Marlena Evans to Trauma .

That is my alternate reality. So enjoy the party. And tell Johnny, if you would, that I’ll catch him later on.

We will.

So any progress with that PR snafu?

I’m not sure.

Hey, Faith. I was thinking we could run lines together, if that’s all right with you. Blake and Faith have a scene together tomorrow.

I’m sorry, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Oh, man, that cake? Chanel, it looks amazing.

Mm-hmm. Red velvet, Johnny’s favorite.

Good work.

Thank you.

Oh, my God. Anyway, Leo is gonna be bringing Johnny in any minute. So you distract him while I go out there with everybody else. We’re gonna set up the party, all right?

All right, I will keep him in here, and I’ll keep him distracted. [door clicks open] And–

OK, good.

Johnny.

Hey. I’ll see you guys on set.

Happy birthday, my love.

What were– what were you and Alex doing in here–alone?

Oh, we–we were just running lines.

Would you stop lying to me already?

What would I be lying to you about?

Spare me the innocent denial, OK? I know you two were having sex in here!

Mom, this is my room. Did you forget?

The maid was cleaning mine.

Oh. Well, the audition went great. Thank you for asking.

Mm-hmm.

I just have to wait and hear back.

Oh. And you know what I’m waiting to hear? Whose wedding ring is this? [dramatic music]

[sighs]

I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’ve been told, but I’m not an actress. I’m actually–

All right, everybody, quiet down. Chanel is gonna be bringing the birthday boy any minute.

OK, everybody, time to get festive. Oh, here, you guys. Here’s two for you.

Thank you.

All righty. Now, Madam Mayor, I have one for you.

Oh, no, thanks.

Well, come on, Paulina. It’s a party. Let’s go, please.

Oh.

Grabbed one for you.

What are you talking about? My God, Johnny, why would you think that Alex and I are having sex?

‘Cause you liked it so much the first time.

Johnny, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I saw you, Chanel, OK? I saw the two of you the other day in here, going at it.

OK, Johnny, this is crazy, OK? Alex and I would never–

I said I saw you, Chanel! And you’ve been lying to me ever since.

Johnny, Johnny, please, please listen to me, OK?

Why–why should I? It’s just gonna be more lies. Just like the day after I saw you with him, you told me you were going to the bakery. Well, I went there, and you were nowhere to be found.

I was running an errand.

Oh, at Alex’s apartment?

What?

Yeah, no, I heard you guys talking about how I was– I was never gonna find out, how clueless I am. I bet you guys had a nice big laugh about–about how– how stupid I am…

Oh, my God.

What a fool your husband is.

Johnny, this is not at all what you think.

No, it’s exactly what I think! OK? And don’t even bother trying to deny it. I–I refuse to believe another word that comes out of your mouth because you’re a cheating slut. Even now, you’re lying right to my face. I can’t believe it. I can’t even look at you.

What’s taking so long? all: Surprise!

Whoo-hoo! [laughs]

What–what is– what is this?

Happy birthday, Johnny boy. Are you surprised or what? You better be, buddy, because Chanel, your wife, did all of this for you, pal. [laughs]

Surprise.

Daytime Soap Opera Short Recaps

B&B logo

Recap written by Suzanne

Steffy tells Carter and Ivy that she’s not going to hire Ivy and Electra to design jewelry for Forrester. Carter gets pissed off at Steffy. Outside Steffy’s office, he rants and raves a little. Ivy isn’t surprised that Steffy has once again let her personal feelings get in the way (because of their past with Liam). Carter thinks Steffy should be more concerned about growing the company.

Brooke and Hope chat with Will about his being an intern. They also tell him that the company is divided between the Logans and Forresters.

Brooke goes to see Steffy, to talk about her line, but Steffy is distracted She’s upset about Carter, so Brooke thinks that it’s because he stood up for Hope and her line. Steffy maintains that it’s also because he wants to bring Ivy in to bring back the jewelry line. She says he’s been great for the company, but now she’s questioning his judgment.

Carter, still angry, visits Hope and fills her in on what’s going on. He says that the battle between the Forresters and Logans needs to end. He tells her that he’s been doing research on taking the company to the next level with re-branding of luxury goods. Hope thinks that’s a great idea. He says that Steffy is a capable CEO but blinded by personal feelings. Hope supports his idea and tells him to do whatever it takes, that it’s his legacy. They smile warmly at each other.

Will and Electra run into each other, literally, and then lock eyes romantically, clearly entranced.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

So Sarah’s hit-and-run case is pretty much closed, huh?

Mm-hmm. And Brady’s finally been released, so that means I can look forward to an evening with Rafe trying to convince me that he’s well enough to go back to work.

Mm. No surprise he’s impatient about it.

No, not surprising at all.

But I’m pretty sure that his doctors will tell him that he’ll be, you know, good enough soon. But listen to me going on and on about my day. What is going on with you?

Mm, nothing much. Just that… I slept with Alex again. [mellow country music]

Trick or treat?

[laughs] Hey, Dad.

[laughs]

I’m hoping you didn’t come here for the candy, because we don’t get many trick-or-treaters in the building. But I can offer you, I don’t know, maybe a little chocolate protein powder?

Protein powder? Uh, I’ll pass.

Okay, what’s with the pumpkin?

Well, I stopped by the market on the way home, and I started thinking about how much fun we used to have carving pumpkins when you were a kid.

Oh, you want to do a little carving, huh?

Why not? I haven’t seen you since you started work on “Body & Soul,” so I thought this would be a good opportunity to bond.

Okay.

And in case you’re not in the mood to stick your hands into some pumpkin guts, I thought we could bond over these.

Hey, all right. All right. Now we’re talking.

[chuckles]

Who are you trying to convince, me or yourself? Either way, you’re wasting your breath because I don’t buy it. Your lack of integrity has undermined me in far too many ways. Did I get it right? [whimsical music] Ha, yeah! Nailed it! [laughs] Ten pages down of dialogue. more to go. [sighs] Hey, Henderson? Be a pal, make me an extra dry martini, please. Oh, come on, Hennie, please? I need to see a friendly face! [inhales sharply]

Will mine do?

[gasps] Ahh! [serene music]

Hey, Gio. I just finished at the bakery. I wanted to see if maybe you wanted to meet up for dinner.

Uh, actually, I’m still at the studio.

Really? This late?

Yeah, uh, Kate wanted me to block my scripts for the next three shows, so I’ll probably be here a while. [soft tense music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Nancy! You’re a sight for sore eyes, girl!

Oh, Bonnie, Bonnie, Bonnie! Oh, I hope this isn’t a bad time. Henderson let me in.

Are you kidding me? Honey, it’s never a bad time when my old pal Nancy comes to see me out of the blue. So how are things in the Big Apple? What are you doing in Salem?

Well, we’ll talk about me later. Right now, I want to talk about you. Is it true that you’re now a big soap opera star?

[laughs] Well, um, get a load of this. [clears throat] Who are you trying to convince, me or yourself? Because either way, I’m not buying it.

Ah, move over, Meryl Streep.

Thank you, darling. [gasps] Oh, my gosh. I can’t believe that you’ve heard of “Body & Soul” all the way in New York City.

[chuckles] Well, actually, it’s the reason I’m here.

How long do you think you’re gonna be at the studio?

Uh, not sure. I still have a lot left to do.

That’s the life of a director, huh?

Yup.

Well, I guess I can’t really complain after you suffered through all those mornings of me getting up at the crack of dawn to open up the bakery.

Hey, that reminds me, I– I stopped by Sweet Bits earlier today.

Oh, yeah, right, Felicity told me. I–I’m sorry I missed you, I was running an errand. [soft tense music] I can trust you to keep this to yourself, right?

Of course. Johnny will not hear a word about this from me.

Good, because my husband is totally clueless.

Let’s keep it that way.

What was the errand?

Oh, I had to stop by the pharmacy to get some medicine for my back in case it flares up again.

And has it?

Has it what?

Flared up again?

Oh, nope. I’m–I’m doing good.

Well, I’m glad to hear that.

So I guess I’ll see you at home later? Don’t work too hard, okay? Love you.

Pharmacy, my ass.

What a nightmare for Xander, huh? Walking in on his own mother trying to push his wife down the stairs.

Unbelievable. I mean, it wasn’t enough that the woman ran Sarah over and then set Brady up to take the fall.

God, it makes everything we do on “Body & Soul” seem tame in comparison, right?

[laughs] What is that saying? Life is often crazier than fiction because fiction has to seem believable and life doesn’t.

I like that. I like that a lot. [chuckles] How does Bonnie like working on the show?

Oh, she loves it. And she especially likes working with you, Alex.

Ah. I’m thinking she’s probably just glad to have an outlet to finally give all that motherly advice that she wanted to give me in real life.

You’re probably right about that.

Yeah.

So speaking of art imitating life, how is it working with your costar?

Oh, it’s going fine. Even though Chanel and I haven’t shot any scenes together yet, the photoshoot went smoothly, so not expecting any problems.

Glad to hear that.

Yeah, so no worries there. [uneasy music]

But worries elsewhere?

Ah, a little situation with another coworker that got a little…messy.

So after Alex and I renewed our agreement to stay just friends–

Mm-hmm.

I was about to go back to my apartment, but–

But?

The next thing I knew, we started making out.

And then the next thing you knew after that?

I think you can figure it out. [both chuckle]

Right.

Ah, Jada, it just– it feels like the more we try to stay just friends, the more we can’t keep our hands off each other.

You know, that sounds a lot like me and Rafe in the beginning. Except it doesn’t look like you think it’s a good thing.

Well– it’s a complicated thing.

I understand. But Steph, it’s happened twice now. And from what I’m hearing, I’m willing to bet that it will happen again.

Well, I wouldn’t bet against it.

Right. So what do you think this means for the two of you?

I have no idea.

Well, it was all Kate and Abe’s idea– bless them, to keep “Body & Soul” alive. Abe was a very big fan. [chuckles]

Well, so am I. Oh, I just love it when you get to see all those divas going at it.

[laughs] Me too. And now I’m one of them. [laughs] Crazy, right?

No. Judging by that performance that you just put on for me before, you can act. Not to mention that you are beautiful, and charismatic, and– oh, they’re lucky to have you.

Oh, honey, you’re too much. Thank you.

Anyway, I was reading in one of the soap mags that, well, they haven’t finished casting all of “Body & Soul” yet, and I was wondering if that’s still the case.

Huh. [chuckles] Why do you ask? Were you thinking maybe you could snag a part?

Oh, no, not for me. Uh, Bonnie, the last time I acted was in a play in high school. And I–oh, I was so nervous, I forgot all my lines. All three of them. No, this is not for me at all.

Okay, then what? [expectant music]

I’m here because I want my daughter to audition. And, Bonnie, I was hoping that you might be able to put in a good word?

[chuckles]

Hey, baby. Mwah. Oh, it’s so good to see you up and about.

Yeah, well, my back is feeling much better thanks to the muscle relaxers that Kayla gave me. They really helped.

Oh, thank heaven for modern medicine.

And thank heaven you had the night off from being mayor for once. Sorry for the late invitation.

Are you kidding? I’ll always make time for a mother-daughter dinner. So you said Johnny couldn’t make it?

Yeah, no, he’s working late, unfortunately.

Really? So late?

Yeah, long hours when you have to direct five episodes of a soap opera a week.

Oh, well, maybe you should lodge a complaint with his executive producer?

[laughs] Oh, no, no. Johnny is– he’s happy to have a job. We all are.

Yeah, well, still, after a whole day’s work, that husband of yours should be having a relaxing dinner with his wife, not burning the midnight oil. [gentle acoustic music]

[sultry jazz music]

This seat taken?

All yours.

Great, thank you. I’ve been traveling with my mother all day. So to say I need a drink would be an understatement.

Well, you came to the right place.

Actually, you know what? I’ve only seen myself under fluorescent lights today. So before I order that much-needed drink, I’m gonna go tame this mop and splash some water on my face. Actually, could you order me one of those, please? Unless you’re leaving soon?

No, I’ve got nowhere to be.

Wow, quick service here, huh?

Enjoy. [sultry jazz music]

Mm. Like I said, I needed that, because, oh, my God, I thought today would never end. You see, my mother, with whom I’m traveling, is not only highly annoying, but she has absolutely zero respect for other people’s boundaries, you know? I mean, try going through two airports, two flights, two rideshares with the woman every step of the way. Drama.

Sounds stressful.

Yeah, no, nonstop stressful, actually. First, it starts out with us not being able to get coffee because she’s worried that we’re gonna miss our flight. So we get to the airport three hours early, makes me throw out my toiletries because she doesn’t want to waste time checking bags. Damn, I had some expensive moisturizers in there.

The horror.

And then… we got through security with hours to spare. And all she wants to do is gossip about the other passengers, making, like, snide comments about what they’re wearing, you know, things like that. She doesn’t even let me watch the shows that I downloaded. [chuckles] Are you even listening to me?

No, not really. And no offense, but you are aware that other people have problems as well, right?

Wow. I thought Midwesterners were supposed to be friendly. Sorry for trying to have a conversation.

Wait.

I’m Johnny. What’s your name?

Joy.

Hey, Joy. Welcome to Salem.

So how are things with you and Johnny? It’s only been a few days since I had to referee an early morning squabble at my apartment.

Yeah, well, things are okay, but they are about to get a whole lot better.

Oh, why is that?

Well, because I am planning a surprise party for Johnny tomorrow for his birthday. It’s gonna be on set.

Oh, on set, huh? Oh, well, that sounds like a cool idea. Well, you need any help, you know your mama loves parties and surprises.

Oh, yeah, believe me, I know. I still haven’t recovered from when you got Ricky Martin to perform at my fifth birthday party.

[laughs] You were definitely surprised.

Oh, yeah, mm-hmm. Even though the only song of his that I knew was “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” and that was from “Shrek.” I was disappointed that you didn’t get Puss in Boots.

[laughs] Well, the other mothers and fathers were very excited.

Mm-hmm, I recall. But no, Johnny’s party is going to be a little bit of a smaller gathering.

I figured. I figured. But if you need any assistance, just tag in your mother.

Oh, thank you, but I already enlisted Alex.

Alex? Sweetheart, are you sure that’s a good idea?

So you and Stephanie are spending a lot of time together, huh?

I mean, Dad, it’s kind of hard not to. We work on the same show together. We live across the hall from each other, for God’s sake.

Right. Right. Well, Stephanie is a lovely person. I’m glad to hear that you’re friends again. [soft tense music] Mm. [chuckles] I detect that look on your face means that you are maybe more than friends again?

Maybe? Sort of.

I see. So if you’re “maybe sort of” more than friends again, and I do get the subtextual meaning of that, are you two getting back together?

Okay, so did you guys talk?

You mean after?

Well, it wasn’t asking about during. [chuckles]

No. No, we didn’t talk after. I–I woke up in his bed, and got the hell out of there once I found my clothes.

Walk of shame style?

Kind of.

Well, I mean, why? What is there to be ashamed of?

Oh, I’m not ashamed.

Mm.

Just… disappointed, you know? Because we agreed that we weren’t gonna do anything that might ruin our friendship, and then we did.

Well, the important word here is “we,” meaning you andAlex. So it looks like he wanted it to happen too.

It certainly seemed that way in the moment.

Right, and are you both still friends?

As far as I know.

Well, then, what’s the problem? I mean, it’s not a crime, you know, to be friends with someone and occasionally have sex. [mellow country music] Unless someone wants more than that.

So you want Chloe to audition for “Body & Soul”?

Oh, no, Bonnie. Chloe is a singer, not– not an actress.

But you said you want your daughter to–

My other daughter, Joy. [soft dramatic music]

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah, well, it obviously came a little too late. And, for the record, Midwesterners generally are very friendly.

Oh, so you’re an exception?

Not always. I’m just in a bad mood.

Yeah, I got that. If you don’t mind me asking, what got you in the bad mood?

My wife did, actually. Yeah, she’s… she’s cheating on me.

Oh, so okay, you want Joy to audition for “Body & Soul”– Chloe’s baby sister.

Who is all grown up and quite a handful, I might add. Oh, she is stubborn, and she’s feisty, and she’s– oh, she is full of you-know-what and vinegar.

Huh. I wonder who she takes after.

All right, she’s a lot like her mother, the poor kid. But Bonnie, she has a knack for getting herself into the messiest of situations.

So your wife is cheating on you?

All right, did I just say that out loud to a stranger?

Hey, no worries here. I’m not gonna tell anybody. It’s not like we have anybody in common anyway, right? Who would I tell? [chuckles]

Yeah. Yeah, that’s a good point. [clears throat]

Well, I’m really sorry what you’re going through. That really sucks.

Yeah.

And I’m sure you don’t want to hear my two cents, but I do have a lifetime of experience assuming the worst in people. So I don’t know. Is there a chance you’re jumping to conclusions based on flimsy evidence?

Nah, not too flimsy. Actually, I– I walked in on them.

Oh. Well, there goes that theory.

Yeah.

So, um, who’s the guy? Do you know him?

Yeah, I know him. And she works with him.

So what, they start flirting by the copy machine?

Actually, they– they knew each other prior to working together. They actually slept with each other before she and I were married, so.

Wow. And you’re okay with them working side by side?

Well, she swore to me that everything that happened between them was in the past. And that she wasn’t even attracted to him anymore. And I stupidly believed her.

Hey, she’s–she’s your wife. You trusted her. [sultry jazz music] So what did you do after you walked in on them?

Ooh, I, um, turned around and walked out.

You confronted her, though, right?

No, I didn’t.

[scoffs] Why the hell not?

Relax, Mama, okay? I needed an ally on set, and Alex volunteered to help me with Johnny’s party, which was really nice of him, actually.

Okay.

Okay, you said “okay” like it’s not totally okay.

Well, now, correct me if I’m wrong now, but isn’t Alex the reason you had to come over not too long ago and use my shower because Johnny got all jealous about you two shooting those love scenes together?

No, no, no, that was the photoshoot. But we talked that out. We talked it out. It was fine.

Well, I talked to him later that day, and he admitted that it’s been harder on him than he expected.

Right, and I understand that. But what I think is that we just– once we get this first bedroom scene done and over with, everyone will realize that it is all okay, and that it is not a threat to anyone’s marriage or relationship. It’s make believe.

Oh, so you didn’t shoot the love scene yet?

No, I thought I told you. We had to put it on hold because of the whole situation with my back.

Well, on hold till when?

Tomorrow. Okay, but I think that what is really getting to Johnny is the anticipation of it also. I really do believe that once said love scene is over and done with, everything is gonna be just fine. [tense music]

No. Stephanie and I aren’t–we’re not getting back together, Dad. It didn’t work out the first time. There’s no reason why it could the second. And if you may remember, I was just married to Theresa about five minutes ago. And on top of that, Stephanie just lost somebody that was really important to her.

Everett?

Mm-hmm.

I don’t mean to be insensitive, but Everett is gone and so is Theresa.

Touché. But it doesn’t matter, Dad. You know, I just don’t think Stephanie and I are really meant to be. It’s just not like that. [soft dramatic music]

Okay, so what is it like?

Look, neither Alex nor I want more than what is going on right now.

Right. A friendship with the occasional lovemaking.

Okay, can we not call it lovemaking, please? No one is in love here, okay?

But still.

But still what?

I get the feeling that there is something you’re not saying.

Like what? I’m just saying that no one is in love here. And that no one includes me.

Right. I heard what you said. But, Steph, I know how it is with exes, okay? And when you run into each other at a vulnerable time, you know, the physical stuff comes easy. The attraction is still there. And I don’t know. You know, hearing you talk and the vibe that your friend here is getting, I’m starting to think that maybe there’s some feelings still there.

Oh, here’s Joy at the airport.

Oh, honey, she is so beautiful.

And she knows it too.

Oh, a born performer. And a real drama queen. Oh. So, anyway, when I saw the casting notice for “Body & Soul,” I thought, why not come and let her bring that to the screen? Especially since she’s–

Especially since she’s, what?

Well, Bonnie–[sighs] Lately, Joy has been so adrift. I mean, one minute she’s applying to beauty school, the next moment she wants to be a doctor.

[chuckles] Like her daddy. Sorry.

Right. Anyway, I thought that if– if she could just get a part on “Body & Soul,” then just maybe, Joy could find her purpose. [soft dramatic music]

Obviously, I wanted to confront him, right? My–my wife and the guy that she was having sex with. And I wanted to walk in there and just beat him to a pulp, you know? And I just– I don’t know, I went numb. I was in shock.

I get that. What about the next time you saw her?

When I saw her later, I thought– I thought that she was gonna confess, you know, tell me it was just some horrible mistake and beg for my forgiveness.

Well, would you have been okay with it if she had?

No. Obviously not, okay? But at least I could have maybe worked past it eventually. But instead of being honest with me and contrite, she just– she acted like nothing even happened. She just lied right to my face.

And then what?

Then she snuck out to see him again the next day.

Oof.

Yeah. Told me she was going to run an errand. Really, she just went over to his apartment. I saw her leave. Heard her make him swear not to say anything. Heard her call me clueless even.

Whoa. Okay, I’m sorry, but this woman sounds like a stone-cold bitch.

But she’s not, though. You know, if you would have asked me a month ago if she was capable of doing something like this, I would have said no way in hell. Now it’s like I don’t even know who she is anymore. And even though– I don’t know, the reason that I’m not confronting her, you know, telling her that I know she’s cheating on me, that I saw her, that I walked in on her cheating on me–

Yeah? What’s the reason? [sultry jazz music]

I guess it’s, uh– I feel like if I– if I actually say it, if I put it out there, then it’s real. And I would still give anything for it not to be.

Okay, so the goal is to get through this love scene and then surprise Johnny with a party. And since Alex is going to be helping with that surprise, then maybe Johnny will feel better about him. And then we can all move forward as friends.

Kumbaya, peace and love.

Exactly.

Yeah, right until the next sex scene.

Okay, love scene, first of all. That’s what I prefer to call it. And second of all, Mama, you’re not helping.

Well, Chanel, darling, I just– you know, I want you to have realistic expectations.

Okay. How am I being unrealistic, Mama? I truly believe that once we have gone through this experience together of Johnny directing, Alex and I acting in this lovescene, then it is just gonna be a million percent easier moving forward.

A million percent?

Yes, a million percent, okay? After we do this, all the weird tension and hurt feelings, that will all be over with. After tomorrow, it is going to be smooth sailing all the way.

What’s it like between Stephanie and me? Mm. Well, as you know, Dad, I was on a pretty low place when I moved back in here. Stephanie kept– she kept me steady. She helped me through the dark times. I just can’t stop thinking about… what it was like when we were together and… how badly I screwed things up, man. I was an idiot. I hurt her very badly. It took us a long time just to get back to a place of being friends again, you know?

Have you had this conversation with Stephanie?

Yeah. Many times. And she agreed that we need to just keep things the way they are.

Except that you are now, as you just described it, sort of, kind of more than friends? [soft dramatic music]

Well, this morning after we woke up, she ran out of here like the apartment was on fire, after calling the whole thing a mistake.

And do you agree with that, that the whole thing was a mistake?

Okay, I admit, the idea of getting back together with Alex has crossed my mind. It’s just–it went so horribly the last time. And he and I have been getting along so well recently. I don’t–I don’t want to risk losing that.

Even if you feel something for him?

Yeah, even if I do, because Alex doesn’t feel the same way.

Well, how do you know that? Have you asked him?

[sighs]

No, I have not asked Alex if he has feelings for me, because first of all, how embarrassing would it be if he says he doesn’t? And second of all, I haven’t forgotten the old Alex. He was a player and a very bad boyfriend.

Well, people change. I mean, he did just get married.

Mm. Yeah, for five minutes. Through no fault of his own, so yeah, I do– I do believe that he has changed. But how much? I mean, this is a guy who has had multiple threesomes. He seems very comfortable with the friends-with-benefits thing. [sighs]

Well, then maybe that’s a good thing, if that’s what you are. [mellow country music]

Except I’m not fine with it. I admit that. I– I don’t know. It’s confusing. And it feels reckless and unfulfilling and just plain wrong. So you know what? As far as I’m concerned, Alex and I are strictly friends from now on. No more sex.

If you say so.

You know, Dad, I don’t even know if I have a knife sharp enough to carve a pumpkin.

You’re avoiding my question, Alex, which I understand. You’re a grown-ass man. Your love life is none of my business.

Dad, I don’t mind you asking me about it. I really don’t. And I understand why. It’s because you care, and I appreciate that. But the whole thing is moot. Stephanie’s not interested in me like that. So can we please just carve the pumpkin?

Sure.

Thank you.

But you, my friend, are on guts duty.

Oh, no, no. Dad, that’s not fair.

Oh, yes, you are. I bought the pumpkin and dragged it over here. You, because you’re so good at it, you’re gonna get your hands very sticky, and you’re gonna work those guts, and you’re gonna clean that pumpkin.

Oh, my God, okay. All right, I’m on guts duty.

[laughs]

Hey.

Oh, Bonnie, it is so good to see you.

Ooh, back at you, darling.

Oh, and congratulations on being a diva.

[laughs] Well, you know I was always a diva. Just I wasn’t a diva on TV.

Oh, hon, you are now. And I am so sure you are going to be a fan favorite.

Well, that’s the goal. [chuckles]

And you know what? I know you have nothing to do with casting, but–

Nancy, say no more, it would be my pleasure to put in a good word for your beautiful daughter. Oh, honey, it really would be a pleasure. And you know what? This diva is gonna throw her weight around and make sure your daughter gets an audition. Mm-hmm. Whoo!

Whoo-hoo!

All righty, righty, right.

Whoo-hoo! [both laugh]

So what are you gonna do? I mean, apart from drowning your sorrows and telling your deepest secrets to a stranger?

You’re not a stranger. Not anymore.

Well, I guess that’s true. Still, you can’t hole up in this bar forever.

No, I can’t. That would get very old, very fast. In fact, it already is– [clears throat] Getting old, actually. Except for your company.

Well, thanks. Johnny, you can’t let your wife keep cheating on you while you act like nothing’s wrong. That’s gonna eat you up inside.

It already is.

Mama, no, I am the one who asked you to dinner.

Stop. Now, it is my pleasure to treat you. And from what I’ve heard, celebrities never pay for anything.

You know what? I’ve heard that too. [both chuckle] You know it’s too bad I wasn’t on a soap opera when you cut off all my credit cards.

Oh, well, Chanel, honey, you have grown up a lot since then. I mean, look at you. You’re not only a wonderful wife, you’re a successful entrepreneur and an actress.

Mm-hmm, with an amazing mother who is also a wonderful wife, and– hold on, drum roll, please– the mayor of this fine city. [both chuckle]

Oh, honey, we both have a lot to be proud of and grateful for, don’t we?

Yes. Yes, we sure do. All right, well, now I should be heading home.

Oh.

Mwah. I want to be well-rested, and not only for those scenes that I’ll be shooting tomorrow, but also for the big surprise. [both chuckling]

You’re right. I do have to confront my wife sooner rather than later.

Tonight?

No. Not tonight. [sultry jazz music]

Recap written by Suzanne

Hope daydreams, smiling, thinking about all the nice things Carter said to her in the Forrester meeting. Brooke comes in, happy to see Hope smiling. Hope admits that she’s still worried about pressure from Steffy. Brooke tells her that she was talking to Deacon about her. She praises Carter for his passionate defense of Hope in the meeting. Hope agrees that he’s passionate. They also mention the great video that Liam made for HFTF. Will drops by, so they ask him how he’s doing and then mention the family tension there at Forrester between the Logans and Forresters.

Carter and Steffy have a meeting; he notices that HFTF is not on the agenda. She hasn’t decided what to do about it yet. They argue a little. He still thinks that they need to grow Forrester and invest in HFTF as well as other ventures. He tells her to think about the future of the business and to think bigger. He thinks they should expand instead of cutting lines. He tells her that he has a surprise for her, and then he brings in her Cousin Ivy. Carter reminds her that Ivy learned to make jewelry from Quinn, so he thinks they should bring Ivy in to make the same high end jewelry that Quinn was making. Ivy begs Steffy to consider her, and she also brings in her niece, Electra, who is a young woman now. Steffy is happy to see Electra. Quinn lets her know that Electra is a valuable member of her jewelry-making team. Steffy is stunned by the hard-sell approach that Carter has put on her. Steffy and Ivy have a bad past, but Ivy points out that they’re more mature now and not the same people.

Deacon and Sheila are at Il Giardino. She praises his new recipes, which everyone is loving. She knows that Brooke was there yesterday, even though he didn’t tell her. They flirt . He tells her that she was there to speak with him about Hope. Later, he looks at the photos of his two dead friends, Hollis and Tom, on the wall. He and Sheila chat some more, about Hope and Steffy, and how Hope kissed Finn. Sheila gives him a pep talk about how Brooke will make sure that Ridge doesn’t kill Hope’s line. They’re both surprised that Carter, who usually sides with the Forresters, would stick up for Hope and her line.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[suspenseful music]

Steve? What’s going on?

I’ll tell you what’s going on. This woman is not Abigail. [dramatic music] – Yes, Mr. Shin. It is definitely a miracle my sister-in-law is back from the dead. Oh, I agree. It was a very productive meeting. You and the board have given me a lot to think about. [chuckles] Yes, always a pleasure talking with you too. Zài jiàn. Cranky old bastard. [sighs]

[scoffs] You.

Yes, me. We need to talk, Kristen.

First of all, Xander, I don’t recall any plan to meet you here. And if you’re here to beg for the serum again, just save your breath. I’m not gonna hand it over while Brady’s still behind bars.

But he isn’t. Brady’s free.

[siren wailing] [indistinct chatter]

Sarah.

Brady. I’m so happy that I caught you before you left. I heard that the DA dropped the charge against you.

Yeah, they just– just processed my release.

And now the right person is behind bars. I’m really happy that EJ came to his senses.

Mm-hmm, obviously, me too.

Right. Look, I’m sure that you– you want to get home and get out of here, but do you have a minute? There’s something I’d really like to say to you. [tense music]

What do you mean, she–she isn’t Abigail?

This woman is an imposter, Chad. She’s a con artist.

Stop! Stop! We’ve been over this, all right? We did a DNA test.

Kayla ran the test again. The samples between her and Jack are definitely not a match.

I’m sorry, Chad. This woman is not your wife.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

The police let Brady go? [dramatic music]

He’s been fully exonerated now that they’ve arrested the true culprit.

Wait, what do you mean, the true culprit? Are you saying that Brady isn’t the one that ran over Sarah?

No, he isn’t. It was–it was my mum.

What?

Yeah. Turns out, she and Brady were drinking the night of the accident and my mum was behind the wheel when they hit Sarah. And then rather than own up to what she did, she decided to frame Brady.

Oh, good Lord.

Surprised you haven’t heard about all this or read about it. It was in “The Spectator” this morning.

Well, I just got back from a business trip to Chicago.

Well, I just got back from the police station, where your brother didn’t want to release Brady. But Sarah and I, we managed to change his mind.

So Brady is really free? Yes, Kristen, that’s what I’m trying to tell you. Now, please, can we have the serum?

I don’t think so.

What?

Well, not until I confirm what you’re telling me.

Damn it, Kristen, what I’m telling you is the truth.

Forgive me, Xander, but I mean, the last time you came here begging for the serum, you–you tried to bamboozle me.

For God’s sake.

OK, wait. Hey, hey. You know what? If Brady is free, then I’m sure I will have no problem getting him on the phone.

[sighs]

Hmm?

Actually, I’m–I’m glad you’re here, ’cause I wanted to talk to you too. You think we could go in there for some privacy?

Yeah. [phone ringing]

Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. Can I take this real quick?

Yeah. I’ll–I’ll wait for you.

Hi, Kristen.

Hey, Brady. I heard the good news. You really out?

I really am. I’m still at the station, but I’m gonna be heading home soon.

Oh, Brady, that is just wonderful. Why don’t you stop by my place on your way home? I know Rachel would love to see you.

Yeah, I would love to see her too.

Oh, well, good, good, good. Listen, before I let you go, I’m just curious, how exactly did your release come about?

[siren wailing]

Hey, Kayla.

Ah. Hey, Marlena.

Got some time for some good news?

Oh, always, of course.

Brady’s getting out of jail.

That’s great. Yeah, I’m sure you’re very happy.

You don’t sound very excited. Are you just distracted?

I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It’s just that I was looking at my texts, and I just got one from Steve. And it must have been delayed, because I know he landed in Paris quite a while ago.

Wait, what is he doing in Paris?

He’s trying to stop Chad from marrying Abigail.

Why?

Because Abigail is not Abigail after all.

Mark, hey, it’s me. Mark, are you OK?

Chad, the only reason that first test looked like a match was because this joker messed with it. He falsified the results.

Is that true, Steve?

I’m sorry.

He’s breathing. Mark, Mark, can you hear me? It’s me, baby. Can you hear me?

Is that true?

You’re not Abby?

No. No, I’m not Abigail.

This whole time, you’ve been playing me? [dramatic music] It’s all just been a sick game?

So that means that–[groans] That Abigail’s really dead, huh?

I’m so sorry, Chad.

Who is that? Who is that? What, is that your boyfriend?

No, no. He’s my brother.

Well… I just spoke with Brady, and he has indeed been released from police custody.

As I told you. So give me the damn serum.

No, I don’t think so.

[chuckles] You see… [clears throat] Brady said that his brother was the one who figured out that Fiona framed him and that’s what sparked his memory that he wasn’t the one driving the car that hit Sarah.

Sarah remembered that too.

Yeah, but technically, Xander, it was Brady who alerted the police to your mother’s guilt. So I mean, you and your wife, I mean, you didn’t do anything to get Brady free.

The hell are you trying to say, Kristen?

Well, I think it’s pretty obvious, Xander. I’m gonna keep the serum.

Sorry about that.

[sighs] If anyone should be apologizing–

Oh, my God. I have– I’ve been blaming you for my accident for months. And I–I know that you’ve been blaming yourself too. Brady, I’m– I feel so awful about it.

Don’t feel that way. Don’t feel that way, because… I thought I was guilty, too, thanks to your mother-in-law.

Yeah. But I’m the one that told the police that I saw you behind the wheel. That’s on me, not Fiona. That statement almost sent you to prison for a crime that you didn’t commit, and… if you never forgave me, I would understand.

Sarah, you are forgiven.

Although I wasn’t– I wasn’t the one behind the wheel that night– thank God it wasn’t me– Fiona never would have been able to frame me for that crime if I hadn’t been so damn drunk, OK, so it’s gonna take me a long time to forgive myself for–for that, for being weak and relapsing after God knows how many years of sobriety.

And you’ll get there, Brady. You’re a really good man. And you had the sense not to drive that night, so you have to give yourself credit for that.

No, I don’t think I deserve any credit. No. Thank you. That’s kind. Sarah, now that I–I remember that I wasn’t the one that hit you, I– I’m having a hard time understanding why you ID’d me as the driver. I mean, did you see me in the passenger seat and–and you got it– you got it mixed up?

No. No, there was no mix-up.

I lied.

– I can’t believe this– the cruelty of that woman, posing as Abigail all these months.

Mm-hmm, and sadly, she had us all fooled.

What about the DNA test? Didn’t that prove that– that she and–and–and Jack were father and daughter?

Yeah, it did. But Steve figured out that she had a little help with that. Our own Dr. Mark Greene. [tense music]

Mark Greene– are you saying that he changed the test results?

Apparently so.

Why would he do that?

I have no idea. But I’m sure that Steve’s gonna find out soon enough.

So that’s your brother? So when you said you were on the phone with JJ, you were talking to him?

I think it’s time we bring in the police.

That’s fine, but I want my answers now. You and me are gonna have a little chat.

Start talking.

[sighs]

Start talking!

What do you want to know?

For starters, why you’re pretending to be my dead wife.

I know–I know that there is no excuse for what I did, but I–I do need you to know that this was not my idea.

Really? So, what, you’re gonna– you’re gonna blame it on your brother?

My bro–no, this wasn’t Mark’s idea either. This was all Clyde’s plan.

Really? OK, so, what, did he–did he– he paid you to–to– to pretend to be Abigail?

No, pay–he did not pay me. It was nothing like that.

OK, then you’re sleeping with him?

Oh, my–no! I wouldn’t let that creep touch me. Are you kidding me?

Why? You’re–you’re letting him use you to do his bidding. You know, I–I–I– Cl–Clyde stopped me from putting a bullet in his head by claiming that Abigail was still alive. And then he tried to use that lie to get himself out of prison, but then he was thrown into supermax. So, what–so why would he go through all of that trouble by–by–by getting you to pose as Abigail? To what–to what end?

I don’t know! He wanted you to be in torment, Chad. And he wanted your money.

[scoffs] This is about money? That’s why you pretended to be a dead woman, why–why you pretended to care about me?

I did not pretend that! Not that. I don’t expect you to believe what I’m saying, but I need you to know that I actually have feelings for you. I really do. [dramatic music]

You’ll let me know as soon as you hear anything from Steve?

Of course I will. And listen, I’m sorry that I was distracted about Brady. I know you must be so happy. It weighed so heavily on you and John, what happened to him. And I’m–I’m sure it’s a tremendous relief that he’s been exonerated.

Oh, it is. And it’s even better because now Kristen is not involved. So she has no need to help Brady.

I don’t understand. How could she have helped him?

I–I don’t even know exactly. She had some–some plan of how to set him free. But now we don’t need her help.

Wow. She’s still trying to worm her way into his life, huh?

Yeah. She is still in love with him.

Sarah, I– I get that you wanted me to pay when you believed that I was the one that had hit you. But I’m frankly surprised that you would lie to the police to make that happen.

That’s not why I lied.

Was it to protect Fiona?

No. I had absolutely no idea that she was the one that hit me. You have to believe me on that.

I–I do. I do, especially now that I know that she… tried to push you down some stairs, I hear.

Yeah, and she would have succeeded if Xander hadn’t have come home when he did.

[sighs] Dear God.

She’s a monster.

Yeah. I’m–I’m sorry for you and–and for Xander.

But I–I can also see that you’re very reluctant.

So tell me why you lied to the police. And I’ve had a little bit of time to think about this, Sarah, and… I have a theory…

That you were trying to protect someone– not Fiona… but her son, because the night you had me arrested…

Xander was going to kill me, wasn’t he?

Kirsten, I just told you, Sarah and I were the ones who convinced EJ that he had no case against Brady. If it wasn’t for us, your lover boy would be rotting in a holding cell next to my mum.

Oh, please. [laughs] You don’t have to tell me how stubborn my baby brother can be. But… he would have had to drop the charges eventually. Brady was gonna walk no matter what.

We had a deal, Kristen. You’re just splitting hairs to justify going back on your word.

Well, Xander, I’m gonna put this into simple terms. This was supposed to be a quid pro quo. You didn’t deliver on the quo.

So you’re not gonna give us the damn serum?

I didn’t say that. [chuckles] It’s your lucky day. I am feeling very generous. No, I will give you the miracle serum to cure Sarah’s paralysis.

Great, thank you.

But I expect something in return.

And what is it? What do you want now?

Titan.

[dramatic music]

You want Titan? Is this a joke?

Do you see me laughing?

You don’t seriously expect me to just hand over a billion-dollar company to you.

Well, you will if you ever want to see your wife walk again.

But it doesn’t make any sense, Kristen. Why would you want my family’s company? You have your own.

Titan is DiMera’s chief competitor. And if I merge the two together, oh, I will be unstoppable.

God, I knew you were greedy, but this is just–

Actually, Xander, it’s self-preservation. You see, I just came back from a very disturbingly tense meeting with the DiMera board. [sighs] And they expressed dissatisfaction in the current revenue stream and projections, a not-so-subtle way of saying that they are losing confidence in me as CEO.

[scoffs]

Now I have to pull out all stops. And if I have control of Titan…[chuckles] Well, then they would obviously regain their confidence in spades. And I will be the most successful CEO DiMera has ever had.

Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, Kristen, but I’m never giving you my father’s company.

[scoffs] [breathes deeply]

We all know how badly Xander wanted revenge because he believed that I had hit you with my car. He was planning on breaking both of my legs. It’s not a far stretch to think that he would have taken it one step further and maybe ended my life.

See, that night, I– the night I was arrested, I ran into this–this man. He claimed to know me from AA, but I’d never met him before. And when we shook hands, he… pricked me with–with his ring. And shortly thereafter, I was completely out of it. Everyone thought I was drunk, but I– I knew that I hadn’t touched a bottle since the night of the accident. So I assumed I had been drugged.

And then that night when the police came to my house, they caught Xander hovering over me in my bedroom. He said he was just there to confront me. I think he was there to… finish me off. Luckily, because you called the police, they stopped him from doing that.

So, Sarah, here’s my thought. You knew what your husband was up to.

And you called the cops and lied to keep him from committing murder.

Does that sound about right?

So is Brady home now?

No, no, he won’t be home until–I don’t know– later this afternoon, I guess. I’m so happy for Tate. He–he really needs his dad right now.

Of course he does, especially since his mother isn’t in his life for who knows how long.

Mm.

I bet John is just thrilled.

Yes. Yes, he is. He is. You know, he always believed there was– there was a little more to it. And he also wishes that he could be here to welcome his son.

John’s out of town?

He is, yeah. His father wanted to–to visit the old farm in Baton Rouge. He spent so many happy years there with his wife.

That’s so sweet of him to go on that trip with his dad. [phone beeps] Oh, sorry.

Is it Steve?

Ugh, no. Oh, I wish it were. I just hope he got to Paris in time.

Yeah, so do I. But even if he doesn’t get there in time to stop the wedding, it’s gonna be so hard. Chad is gonna have to say goodbye to Abigail twice.

My heart breaks for him.

[suspenseful music]

Uncle Steve? What–what are you doing here? What’s–what’s going on?

OK, we–we had a little incident.

This is the guy I saw talking to Holly earlier. Isn’t he a doctor from Salem?

That’s right. He’s also moonlighting as Chad’s would-be assassin.

Wait, what? Is Chad OK?

He’s all right.

And where is Abigail?

In the bedroom with Chad. He’s questioning her about her part in all this.

Wait a minute. Are you–are you saying my sister had something to do with this guy trying to kill Chad?

No. I’m saying… that that woman is not your sister.

Are you kidding me? You want me to believe– after–after you telling me that you’ve been working with Clyde Weston this whole time, you want me to believe that you actually have feelings for me?

I don’t want you to do anything. And I don’t expect anything from you. [dramatic music] But yeah, yeah, I need you to know that I care about you, actually. But more importantly than that, I need you to know that at no point was my intent malicious.

It’s not malicious, making me think that my dead wife is alive?

I hated lying to you, Chad. I hated every second of it. It got harder and harder the more time went on and I got to know you and saw what a beautiful, compassionate, kind, wonderful man you are. And then when I recited those vows to you, I realized I wasn’t part of this–this–this plan, this convoluted plan. I was falling in love with you. And–and I’m sorry. I know that you don’t need to hear that right now, but it’s the truth.

You’re right. I don’t.

The vows…

How did you do that? How did you know them?

When you–

When you brought the wedding album over…

You mentioned something about a box of mementos that were in the attic. And I–I snuck in, and I found Abigail’s vows, and I memorized them.

Ugh! God, you are disgusting. I mean, this–this is so, so unbelievably twisted! I mean, you see that, right? Right? I mean, you’re not so screwed up that you don’t realize that lying to me like that, that making me feel this– this kind of miserable pain, this kind of grief, you don’t–you don’t– you don’t get to claim that you care about me and do that to me! If you cared about me, you would have told me the truth before I fell for you, before I was sure that I had the love of my life back, and especially before your brother showed up here to shoot me dead!

So…[sighs] This woman posing as Abigail, you remember how all this started and how she was discovered.

Of course I do. Jack and Chad went looking for her, and then they found John tied up in her apartment.

And she had no idea how all that happened.

And John and Steve never got to the bottom of that. Well, hopefully, when he confronts her, he’s– he’s gonna be able to get some answers. [dramatic music]

So my mom was right all along. She knew that woman wasn’t her daughter.

Yeah. I guess we should have known better than to doubt a mother’s instinct.

Yeah. Yeah, we should have. But, Uncle Steve, I dread telling my dad. He was so convinced that it was her, so damn happy about it, relieved.

I know. But I think we should wait till we have more details before we make that call.

I–I don’t–I don’t get it. Why would that woman pretend to be Abigail? And how is she connected to this guy?

Well, apparently, they’re brother and sister. And if I had to venture a guess about their motive, I’d say it has something to do with Clyde Weston.

Chad, I swear to you, I– [sighs] I–I didn’t even know Mark was coming to Paris. I certainly didn’t know he was coming here to kill you.

Why should I believe you?

Because I wouldn’t have let it happen. I–I got in the way of the gun. I was gonna stop him.

Yeah, well, how–how do I know that’s not part of your act?

It wasn’t! I was supposed to marry you and then transfer your assets to Clyde. That was it.

OK, so then, what, once I found out my–my assets were gone, how in the hell were you going to explain that?

I wasn’t.

I was meant to disappear.

Oh. Right, OK. But then you or your brother or–or Clyde decided that it would just be a lot easier if I was dead and then you could just inherit the money.

Chad, I didn’t know. I’m–I’m telling you, I didn’t–

Just stop.

You know… part of this is my fault too. Part of this nightmare is on me, because… I knew in my gut that something was off, you know? And every time I had my doubts, I just reminded myself that we did a DNA test. But if I’m being– if I’m being completely honest…

I think the reason why I fell for your lies was– was–was because I– I just wanted so desperately for this all to be true and that–that– that the love of my life had finally come back to me and my kids.

And you know what? For the first time since I found out my wife was dead, I wasn’t in pain. The pain was all gone. And now, thanks to you, I have to mourn her all over again.

I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.

You know what? And it’s not just me that you hurt. You know, I mean, when– when her– when her parents find out the truth, they’re gonna be in hell.

And my kids.

Oh!

Oh, God, thank God– thank God I did not tell my kids.

Yeah. yeah. Thank God. I was– I was so adamant about not seeing them because I didn’t– I–I didn’t want them to get their hopes up. That’s why I wanted us to come here to Paris, so I could protect them from–from having their hopes that their mom was coming back–

Oh, what a saint you are!

I’m not saying that! But I need you to believe me. Mark and I never wanted to do any of this!

Then why did you?

Because Clyde forced us to.

How?

The only– [sighs] The only reason I pretended to be someone that you loved and lost was to hopefully stop Mark and me from losing someone that we love, because Clyde said that if we didn’t do exactly what he– what he told us to do, then we–we were gonna lose our mom. He was gonna kill her.

You don’t have to say anything. I can tell by the look on your face that I’m right.

In some ways, I get it. You know I’m no fan of Xander’s. But I don’t blame him for wanting to pay me back for what he believed I did to you.

That’s–that’s generous.

As far as your lie goes, you thought it was best that a guilty man go to prison instead of the father of your child going to prison for committing murder. [sighs] I can’t blame you for that.

[sobs] Thank you.

It’s all right. I know you tried to do the– the right thing in the end. You–you– EJ told me you tried to recant your statement.

[sniffling] I did.

Brady, it was for– it was for selfish reasons.

What–what do you mean?

[sighs] Apparently… [clears throat] There is this experimental drug that could help me walk again. And–and someone offered to give it to me if I had the charges against you dropped.

Oh, my–oh, my God. I am pretty sure I can guess who made that offer.

You might want to rethink your position on that matter, Xandy, unless you want to go home to your wife and explain to her that you threw away her only chance of ever walking again.

Come on, Kristen. There must be something else you want, something a bit more reasonable. I mean, I don’t know. How about– how about a nice car? You need to get Brady a new one anyway, don’t you?

That is the lamest counteroffer I’ve ever heard.

I know, but I just– what am I suppose–wait. You don’t need Titan to impress the board. You have the serum. You told me you were gonna make a fortune marketing that drug.

Yeah, well, that’s what I thought initially. [scoffs] Oh. But it turns out, those pesky clinical trials and FDA approvals can take years. So if I even make a profit on this damn serum, one of my brothers could have taken my place in the CEO’s chair. So I have to act right now.

Surely, you understand, Kristen, my father left his company to me to take care of. It was his life’s work. I can’t just hand it over to the daughter of his greatest enemy.

Why not? I mean, think about it, Xander. Really, isn’t it a small price to pay to help the woman you love?

[knocking]

Brady! Oh, my God, I’m so happy that you’re free!

Hi. Thank you. Thank–thank–thank you. Thank you.

Yes.

Where’s–where’s Rachel?

Oh, oh, Rachel, yes, she is upstairs. I will go get her.

Hold on. Can I talk to you for one second first?

Of course.

Sarah told me about the deal that you made with her and Xander. And I’m assuming that’s the plan you alluded to when I was at the station.

Yes, it was. But it turns out, I didn’t have to make that deal after all.

You’re still planning on giving Sarah the serum, though, right?

Well, Brady, of course I am. In–in fact, I mean, Xander was here, and we were making arrangements. [dramatic music]

There you are.

Here I am. Did you talk to Brady?

I did. I apologized. FYI, he pretty much figured out that I lied to prevent you from killing him.

But he doesn’t have any proof of that.

He doesn’t. [sighs] And he’s willing to let it go.

That’s good of him.

Yeah, it is.

How did it go with Kristen?

Oh, well, she ultimately agreed to give us the serum.

OK.

But there’s a catch.

Of course there’s a cat– Brady’s free. How is there a catch?

Well, Kristen doesn’t feel that you and I were directly involved in making that happen, so now she wants something else in return for the drug.

What–what does she want?

Nothing much. [tense music]

Just my family legacy.

You. Why the hell are you here?

My uncle foiled your little assassination attempt.

How did you know?

That DNA test I had you run, that was actually a test for you. And you failed miserably.

Where’s my sister?

She’s in there with Chad. The newlyweds are hashing things out. But I’m pretty sure their marriage is doomed.

[dramatic music]

Clyde threatened to kill your mom?

His men have been holding her hostage this entire time.

And if we don’t get the money to him soon, they’re gonna execute her. That is the only reason that Mark and I agreed to do any of this.

And how do I know it’s not just another lie?

You don’t… obviously. [sighs] I don’t expect you to believe anything I’m saying. Why should you?

Yeah, why should I? I don’t even know who the hell you really are.

I’m Cat… short for Catharina. I was named after my mom.

It’s all so strange. One moment, John was in Greece, laying flowers at Catharina’s grave. And the next, he was–he was tied up in a room in Poplar Bluff.

And because of that, as you told me, he didn’t get the closure with Catharina that he needed.

Yeah. And no matter how much time passes, he will never forgive himself for having taken a life.

It’s just so sad. I mean, even though he knows that he was brainwashed and he wasn’t really responsible for her death, he just carries around that tremendous guilt.

It’s terribly sad. And I–I suspect that her death will always haunt him.

So as far as you know, your mother is still alive.

[sighs] One phone call from Clyde and that can all change, but… yeah.

You know, I don’t– I don’t know if you’re telling the truth or not. Honestly, I don’t really care. What I do know is that you and your brother committed an incredibly cruel fraud against anyone who’s ever loved Abby.

And it is for that that I will make you pay.

I promise you.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[dramatic music]

Hey, boss.

You’re late.

Three minutes, what’s the big deal? We don’t open for dinner for another hour.

Three minutes late is still late, Ms. Choi. But I’ll let it slide… this time.

Thanks, Ms. Vitali. What are you reading?

Just the latest Salem news.

About Brady Black, by any chance?

You already heard?

That he isn’t the one who ran over Sarah Kiriakis after all? Yeah, his son, Tate, told me. He and I are pretty close. ,::,

Hey, dude, I heard the good news about your dad.

Yeah, man, it’s great news, right? both: Yeah.

I was actually just texting my grandpa to see if he’s been released yet.

Good, dude, I’m happy for you. I feel like that was really weighing on you.

It was, man. Thank you.

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, sure. So what does this mean for you and Holly? Hello, I feel like she went after your dad pretty hard.

Oh… there is no more me and Holly. We broke up.

OK. [laughter]

Thank you.

If I may, I’d like to make a toast to the bride and groom. I have to admit that… I was nervous about seeing you, Abigail, especially after the way Mom felt when she did. But now… I’m just sorry I didn’t reach out sooner, even if it was to video chat or talk to you on the phone.

[echoing] My mother? Oh, yes I was talking on the phone to my brother, JJ. My mom had a hard time accepting that I was actually her daughter, Abigail.

Wait, what do you mean? Didn’t you two just talk on the phone last night?

[groans] Damn, straight to voicemail.

So what’s going on, sis?

I’m trying to get Chad on the phone, but he’s not picking up. You know, he’s in Paris.

He is? With Abigail?

Yeah, yeah. And now he’s not answering my texts. I’m just gonna keep trying.

So why Paris?

It was her idea. She thinks it’s gonna jog her memory.

OK, all right. Oh, because they lived there for a while after they got married, right?

Yeah, and apparently, they’re getting married again.

And that’s not a good thing?

No, Roman, it’s a terrible thing. [light music] – Clyde, I’m here at Le Café Blanc. [dramatic music] But look, there has to be some other way. Yeah, no, I get it. You don’t have to keep telling me why I’m doing this.

So what’s the plan? How do you propose I murder him?

Holly, what are you talking about?

Oh, well, it’s just, when I ran into Abigail at that café downstairs, she was on the phone with you.

No, she wasn’t. [chuckles]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[tense music]

Look, I know what’s at stake, OK? So enough with the threats. Just tell me the plan. A package? Where?

Table closest to the entrance. Yeah, no, I see it.

[sighs]

I got it. Yeah. I know. I know. I know. I just need to make sure that my sister and Chad are married, and then I–

[chuckles] JJ, I think you were in the middle of a toast.

Yeah, but just hold on one second.

No, I would love to hear the rest of it.

Yeah.

I would love to hear the rest of it. It’s–it’s fine. I don’t think Holly meant to interrupt.

You’re right, I didn’t.

That’s fine. No, hold on a second.

JJ, go ahead.

No, no, no, sorry. Just real quick. I’m just a little bit confused here. You said that she was on the phone with her brother?

Yeah, I did say that. And look, it’s not like I was eavesdropping or anything, I promise. Just, when I walked past you, you were talking about your mother, and you said you were on the phone with JJ, so…

I guess I must have misunderstood.

Yeah, yeah, you did.

[sighs]

So, what, are you worried that Chad and Abigail are rushing things? I mean, we do know she hadn’t gotten her memory back yet.

That’s not it. He’s not answering his damn phone. You know, maybe–maybe he’s got it turned off.

All right, Kayla. Look, I know you don’t rattle easy. Your hands are shaking. What the hell is going on here? What do you need to tell Chad?

That he’s about to marry a woman who is not Abigail. [light music]

You and Holly broke up? Like, for real? What happened?

Yeah, dude, we had this huge fight about my dad.

Ugh. That’s rough, dude. I’m sorry.

Yeah, it was also about– ah, never mind, doesn’t matter.

Ah, no, don’t do that. Come on, it’ll stay between us. Come on, you know that.

All right. Dude, Holly slapped Sophia across the face.

Sorry?

Yeah.

What–are you serious?

I am very serious, man. They were arguing in the square. And just as I walked up, Holly attacked Sophia.

That’s–what? That’s crazy. Why? Why did she do that?

Dude, like, well, because Sophia just called Holly out for sneaking into my dad’s room to try and get evidence to give to the DA.

Who is EJ DiMera, who’s married to Holly’s mom, right?

Yeah, but they’re getting a divorce now. And besides, Holly is just as angry at her mom as she is everybody else in the world.

OK, OK, OK. But I–I still don’t see how that would mean she goes WWE on Sophia.

Well, there is more. Sophia also told Holly that she likes me as more than just a friend.

OK, I don’t see why Holly is freaking out about that. I mean, I feel like we knew Sophia was after you from–from the jump.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’m sorry about that, by the way. I know you were into Sophia.

No, no, no. It’s OK. I’m all right. I mean, be real. You’re the one that she wanted from the beginning anyway, so it’s OK. But now that you and Holly called it quits, could you and Sophia get together?

[sighs] [dramatic music]

So this Fiona woman just stood by and let Brady take the fall for paralyzing Sarah. [chuckles] Unbelievable.

Yeah, not to me. See, I waited on her once. She turned out to be a real bitch.

What, she gave you a hard time?

Only after I joked about how much she loved her martinis. But before I hit that nerve, we had some girl talk. I have to say, she was a pretty good listener.

Oh, yeah?

Knowing that she’s such a terrible person, now I wish I hadn’t confided in her.

Well, she’s certainly not gonna be hanging her hat around here for a while.

More like never again. So I’m back to having no one to talk to.

You know what? I should let you guys celebrate as a family. Thank you for letting me be a part of this. I’ll just come get the rest of my stuff later.

No, you don’t have to leave.

No, it’s–it’s fine, Chad.

Holly, no, no.

You guys should all be together.

You don’t have to leave.

I’m good. We’re good.

Are you sure?

Yeah.

OK. Thank you for your– thank you for coming and all of your help.

Mm-hmm. Bye.

OK, so you want to explain why you told Holly you were talking on the phone to JJ?

I– I had a really emotional day. I wasn’t thinking straight.

That’s not an explanation.

Chad… please–please don’t look at me like that. I–I was rattled. I–I don’t– she said she wasn’t eavesdropping, but she clearly was. I was having a private conversation with someone–

Yeah, but you said you were talking to JJ, and I’m pretty sure he would remember it. So if you weren’t talking to JJ, then who were you talking to, Abby? And why the hell are you lying about it?

She’s not Abigail? What the hell?

Shh. Would you just keep your voice down?

I thought you did a DNA test to confirm that.

Well, we did, but my ever-suspicious husband did not accept the test results on face value. And it turns out that his instincts were spot-on and that the DNA test… was wrong.

Well, what the hell happened? Was there a screwup in the lab?

No, it wasn’t a mistake. Somebody tampered with it.

Who would do that?

Well, we know who did it– somebody on my staff, somebody I thought that I could trust. [sighs]

I said I would, didn’t I? Look, I will do what you want, Clyde. Then you damn well better make good on your promise.

Mark?

Holly.

Hi. This is so weird, running into each other here.

Yeah, some coincidence. What are you doing in Paris?

[lounge music]

So Fiona Cook was your only confidant? What, you don’t have girlfriends your own age that you can talk to?

Not really. I mean, for a while, I had Holly Jonas, but our friendship kind of blew up.

Oh, let me guess. You had a falling-out over a boy.

Yeah, Tate. But see, I liked him first, and Holly knew that, but then she totally broke girl code and didn’t have the decency to tell me to my face that she wanted him for herself.

Yeah, that’s definitely breaking girl code.

I know, right? So instead she went behind my back and came up with this whole ridiculous scheme. She went to prom with our friend Aaron and then tried to get me and Aaron to hook up while she ran off with Tate.

Oh, sounds a little shady.

Truth. Anyway, Tate is a really great guy, and he and Holly were just so wrong for each other.

Hmm. So what’s going on now? You and Tate together?

Not exactly. Not yet, I mean.

Does he know that you like him?

Yeah, yeah, I’ve told him. It’s just…

It’s just what?

Well, he and Holly just broke up, and yeah, she wasn’t nice, and she did a lot of terrible things to him, but I’m also probably a part of the reason they’re not together anymore, and… I think he may still be hung up on her.

Mm. So I guess you kind of feel like you’re, like, the other woman?

Yeah. Yeah, exactly. That’s totally it. I mean, I think, even though they broke up, Holly’s still on his mind. Like, you don’t get over someone that quickly, right?

No, normally it–it takes– it takes a while.

Right, that’s why I don’t want to push too hard, at least for now.

I get it.

Sounds like you’ve been there.

Do you know what it’s like to be the other woman?

Sophia kissed you?

Mm-hmm.

Like, when you and Holly were together?

No, no, no, no. Holly and I were over by then. But I still had to tell Sophia the truth, that I’m not over Holly.

Ugh, and I’m sure she took that real well.

Yeah, no, not at all, actually.

[scoffs] OK, OK. Well, I mean, that– that makes sense, right? You and Holly went through a lot together, so it makes sense that you would take a while to get over her. But when you do, I mean, can you see yourself with Sophia?

I don’t know, dude.

Are you attracted to her?

I mean, yeah. Yeah, she’s–she’s really hot.

Yeah.

And, like, yeah, she’s been really supportive about everything that went down with my dad. Like, really there for me, you know?

OK. So what’s stopping you? Are you still thinking you’re gonna get back together with Holly? [dramatic music]

I’m here visiting my mom. She lives here now.

Right, of course.

What brings you to the City of Light? [tense music]

Something not so light, actually. I have to deal some issues concerning my parents’ estate. They own some properties here in France.

Mm.

They died in an accident.

Right. Aaron told me about it. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Thanks. And hey, I would love to stay and chat, but unfortunately, there is someplace I have to be.

Right, well, I don’t want to hold you up. It’s just crazy. I–I don’t know, seeing another person from Salem here in Paris? I mean, what are the chances of that?

What do you mean? Who else from Salem did you run into?

Oh, I’m not sure if you know her. Abigail DiMera? [unsettling music]

OK, let me get this straight. So Steve gives this Mark character samples of his and your DNA, claiming they’re from Abigail and Thomas.

Yeah. And he supposedly tested it and then told Steve that it was a match for mother and son.

Oh, that son of a bitch. Why would he go to such lengths to trick Abigail’s family?

I don’t know, but he’s obviously in cahoots with this fake Abigail. I tried to contact him and confront him with all of this, and he’s disappeared. – Abigail DiMera? You know, I don’t think we’ve actually met. No, but I did hear about her return.

Yeah.

Yeah, she’s in Paris now too?

Mm-hmm, yeah, I actually just came from her wedding ceremony.

She got married?

To Chad DiMera, yeah. I guess their marriage was dissolved when she supposedly died, so they wanted to make it legal again. But they just said their vows a little while ago. They are now once again husband and wife.

Wow, great news. I’m so happy for them.

Answer the question. Why’d you lie about talking to JJ?

Chad… can–can you and I discuss this alone, please?

You want to give us a few minutes?

Yeah, OK. Sure.

What are you hiding, Abby? Why’d you lie?

Um–

Answer me.

OK. OK, OK, Chad, I will tell you everything.

[lounge music]

So you have been the other woman?

Let’s just say I know what it’s like when people want to sew a scarlet letter to your blouse. You can’t let it get to you.

Kind of hard not to.

Yeah, it is. But you know what people say about opinions?

Everybody has one.

Right. And if you take everyone’s opinion to heart, you are gonna end up second-guessing every move that you make.

So you want my two cents? If you like Tate, if you really like him, go for it. You fight for him with everything that you have. And who cares what other people say? You are a smart, strong, beautiful young woman. Own it. Own who you are.

Own who I am. I like the sound of that.

[chuckles]

I just– I don’t see how Holly and I can work past our problems. Like, I mean, she totally betrayed me.

Yeah, like, multiple times.

Yes.

Yeah.

Yes, more than once. And actually, the first time was the worst, man. Like, letting me take the rap for the drugs that she OD’d on? And then this time, she lied to me to get into my house. She said that it was because she wanted to work on things with us, but it wasn’t. It was really ’cause she wanted to get the goods on my dad so she could try to hurt him. Yeah, it’s kind of hard to forgive, man.

Yeah, I get it. I get it. Wow. OK, so sounds like you guys are really done.

Yeah. I guess we are.

OK. So what’s stopping you with Sophia? What are you waiting on? [dramatic music]

You know, I can’t say I know the DiMeras well, but I’m happy for Abigail and Chad. They’re lucky to get another chance at happiness.

Yeah, they are. I just hope it all works out.

Is there some reason it wouldn’t?

I hope not. Just, things got a little weird before I left.

Weird how?

It was communication issues between Abigail and her brother.

Her brother?

JJ, yeah. He showed up to Paris as a surprise. I shouldn’t be talking about this. Like I said, I just hope it all works out.

Yeah, I hope so too.

Yeah.

And now I really need to get going.

Right. See you back in Salem?

Yes, definitely.

[chuckles] OK, bye.

Bye.

Hey, Holly.

JJ, hey.

Hey, who were you talking to just now? Who was that guy?

Kayla, I’m glad you didn’t find this guy and confront him. My gut tells me he’s dangerous.

Well, tampering with DNA test results is certainly criminal, not to mention cruel. I mean, all of us believing that Abigail was alive? [light music] I mean, how could I be so wrong about a person? I–I mean, this guy is a good doctor. I really believed that he was a good guy.

Well, Kay, he obviously fooled a lot of people, but at this point, you need to let the police handle this.

Oh, believe me, I called Jada, and I told her everything.

OK, that’s good. That’s good. Now we just got to hope the Salem PD tracks this bastard down and charges him with perpetrating a fraud.

Yeah, I hope so, before he hurts anybody else.

I’m listening. [dramatic music]

Talk!

OK, I will.

I need you to understand that the only reason that I did this was because– [knock at door]

That’s probably JJ. I’ll tell him to come back.

Oh, can I help you?

Hi. I’m Mark Greene, a doctor from Salem.

OK.

I just ran into Holly Jonas. She goes to school with my– with my brother, Aaron. She said that you two just got married.

Yeah, well–what?

And she also said that your brother was here.

Right, JJ just left. Look, we’re in the middle of a conversation. Can you–what do you want?

Just… to say congratulations.

Why? You don’t even know us.

I mean, I guess–

Abby?

Hi, Chad.

Hi. Sorry, I got– I was worried about you being out here all alone, but I guess you’re not.

Oh, yeah, I was just asking this nice man for directions. Managed to get lost even with my GPS.

I’m so glad that your friend found you.

[chuckles]

Right. OK, well, thank you for your help.

How you doing?

Better now. I just needed to clear my head.

Yeah, well, having that memory of Clyde must have been upsetting.

Yeah.

Wait. I do know you.

Thanks for the pep talk, boss. I’m so motivated now to make things happen with me and Tate, to own who I am.

[chuckles] Great. OK, but right now, I need you to own being one of my servers and get the tables set before we get slammed for dinner.

You got it, Ms. Vitali.

[chuckles] You can call me Ava.

OK, Ava. [lounge music]

Wait, so you’re telling me you would not have a problem with me being with Sophia?

No, why would I?

I know you were into her.

Yeah, yeah, but I mean, I got friend-zoned, as you well know, so I’m over it. It’s fine. I told you that.

You’re sure?

Yes. I’m sure. Do not hold back on my account, dude. Go for it.

OK. Well, thanks, man.

You’re welcome.

Do you want to come over to my place so I can kick your ass on the gaming system my grandma got me?

Ha, ha, ha. No, I would love to, but I have to watch my sister tonight.

Ah.

Well, my brother’s out of town doing something with our parents’ estate.

All right. Rain check?

Sure. [dramatic music]

You know, Jennifer– Jennifer was right all along. Her mother’s intuition told her that that woman was not Abigail. We should have all listened to her.

Yeah, well, Jennifer will be vindicated, but Jack, my God, he’s gonna be crushed. Can you imagine having to deal with the loss of their daughter all over again? And Jack really, really believed that was his little girl.

My heart breaks for both of them and for Chad, obviously. I just pray to God that he has not married that scam artist yet.

Yeah, that poor guy. I mean, by some miracle, he thought he had gotten the love of his life back.

But it was a lie, an egregious lie. I mean, we should have known better than to believe Clyde Weston when he said that Abigail was still alive. I mean, this is all his doing.

[sighs]

Oh, that was just some guy I know from Salem. A doctor, actually, Mark Greene. I go to school with his younger brother, Aaron.

What’s he doing in Paris?

Something about his late parents’ estate. Such a coincidence, though, running into Abigail here and now him at the same café.

Yeah, it’s– it’s pretty wild.

Sure is. So are things OK with Abigail and Chad?

Not really. I just–I can’t imagine why my sister would have lied about talking to me.

Me neither. Still feel pretty bad about saying anything, though. I, like, totally messed up their wedding reception.

No, I’m actually glad you did. There’s something definitely off here. But Chad’s talking to Abigail in private right now, so hopefully he can get to the bottom of things.

Yeah, I remember you. I saw you two together at the park. You said that you were lost and that you were just asking him for directions.

You two know each other?

We do.

Is he who you were talking to when you–when you said you were talking to JJ?

Yes, and I don’t know why he’s here. Why are you in Paris, Mark?

Somebody better tell me what the hell is going on right now.

I’m sorry. Please, you have to know I had no other choice.

Sorry about what?

[gasps] Oh, my God.

OK, OK, OK. OK. [tense music] OK.

[lounge music]

Hey, you.

Hey. Is this a bad time?

No, no, it’s fine. We just opened for dinner, but no customers yet, as you can see.

Mm-hmm.

Are you here for your sliders?

No, actually, I’m here to talk to you.

Oh. OK, cool. Any news about when your dad is getting released?

No, not yet.

Soon, I hope. So what did you want to talk about?

You and me.

What about us?

I was wondering if maybe you wanted to hang out after work.

Yeah, yeah, sure. I’d love that.

All right. Awesome. OK, I’ll pick you up after your shift. What time is it over?

:.

All right. I’ll see you then.

See you then.

[chuckles]

Honestly, I– I can’t think of a reason why my sister would have lied about this. [dramatic music] Unless–

Unless what?

Unless she really isn’t my sister.

JJ, why would you think that? Wasn’t there DNA proof done that she’s really Abigail?

There was. But I was a cop long enough to know that proof can be doctored.

So you think someone messed with the DNA results?

Maybe. It’s just, I–I keep going back to how my mom felt when she actually met with Abigail. She told me when we spoke about it that she didn’t feel it in her heart that that was her daughter.

It must have been really hard for her and for Abigail.

Yeah, it was, apparently. But what if my mom has been right all along that that woman isn’t her daughter or my sister or Chad’s wife? And what if you catching her in a lie just helped us prove it?

[tense music]

Mark, my God. What are you doing? Put the gun down!

I’m sorry. I really am. But he said there is no other way.

Who said that? Who told you to kill me?

[sighs] I still can’t get Chad on the phone. Well, at least Steve will be there soon.

Steve?

Yeah. He left for Paris this morning to try to stop Chad from marrying that impostor.

All right, good. I’m glad he did. Hopefully, he gets there on time.

[sighs]

Now that you two are married, Clyde wants Chad dead.

Mark, you can’t do this!

Get out of the way.

No, I will not!

Get–

If you want to shoot him, you have to shoot me first.

Get out of the way, damn it!

No!

Steve? What’s going on?

I’ll tell you what’s going on. This woman is not Abigail.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Hey.

Hey, Soph.

Hey, I just heard some lady was arrested for the hit-and-run your dad went to jail for. Does that mean that–

Yeah, he’s been cleared.

Oh, my god, that’s amazing. I’m so happy for you.

Thanks, yeah. But for some reason, he’s still in jail. They haven’t released him yet. [sirens wailing] [tense music]

Good morning, Brady. I brought you some company.

Xander?

Hello, darling.

Having a chat with your dad?

No. More with myself, actually. Wondering how the son of Victor Kiriakis could be such a gullible fool.

No, you are not a fool. We all thought that Brady was responsible for my accident.

And we all thought that my mom was godsent to help us through a difficult time, but she turned out to be the cause of it all. I mean, Sarah, I– I, of all people, should have known better.

She’s a horrible mother. A drunk, a liar, heartless. I should have known she’d never change.

Not important? How could anything that Clyde tells you to do be not important? [sighs] Mark– OK, fine, fine. I don’t need to know, but I’m going to trust that you’re going to take care of it. Yeah, OK. Yes, and I’ll do what I’m here to do– marry Chad. As soon as I’m his wife, I’ll have access to the DiMera investment accounts and I’ll get that money to Clyde. Yeah. Yeah. I’ll let you know when it’s done. [sighs]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[tense music]

You can do this. You can do it. It’s for Mom. Just keep reminding yourself it’s for Mom. [sighs] [knock at door]

[clears throat]

Hey.

Hey, Holly. Hey.

Hi. I could not wait.

How are you doing?

No, no, no, no. Come on in. Abby is– she’s just getting ready. Sit down. Get comfortable. You look beautiful, by the way.

Thank you.

We’re– uh, we’re just so glad we have you. And not only as Abby’s maid of honor, but as our witness.

Well, I’m just grateful to be a part of your wedding. It’s so exciting.

Yes, it is. Uh, how did it go with your mom?

I mean, things are a little awkward still, but at least we’re talking, right?

Yeah. No, that’s good. You know, I lost my mom when I was about your age. And– uh, and when I think back, I– I always wish I would have spent more time with her, been a better son. So trust me, fixing your relationship with your mom is important.

Yeah. Yeah. At least it’s one relationship in my life getting fixed.

Wait, I don’t get it. If they arrested someone else, why is your dad still in jail?

I have no idea. I haven’t been able to talk to him yet. It’s probably just some dumb red tape stuff. But in the meantime, I’m, like, just so relieved that he’s innocent, you know. Like, beyond relieved, I’m, like, so, so happy. And not just for him, but for my grandparents and my sister and for me, too.

I’m so happy for all of you. I know how much it’s been weighing on you guys. And I’m sure he’ll be out soon, Tate.

Yeah. Thank you. I hope so.

So this other suspect, the one who actually did hit Sarah Kiriakis, do you know who it is?

Yeah, I do. It was Xander Kiriakis’s mom and Sarah’s mother-in-law.

Whoa!

Yeah, whoa. Her name’s Fiona Cook.

Wait, what? Fiona Cook? Oh, my god. I know that bitch. [tense music]

I’m surprised to see you, EJ. I didn’t think escorting prisoners to their lockup was a part of the DA’s duties.

Mm, two birds, I suppose. Ms. Cook needed to be brought down and I believe you and I have some unfinished business.

I wasn’t expecting my grand apology until, uh, I was actually officially released. But if you’re ready to give it, I’m ready.

Oh, I’m not here to apologize nor am I here to release you.

Why not? You got your culprit right there.

Mm, we have another possible culprit, yes. But the picture’s a little murky, you see, since the finger has been pointed at both of you. So I thought I’d bring the two of you down here and let you hash out your respective versions of the truth. Have oodles of fun, you two.

Fiona. [clears throat] Look at me. Look at me!

Do we really have to do this, Brady?

Oh, we really do. You know, when I first met you, I thought you were kind. I thought you were fun. I thought you were, you know, misunderstood. How in the hell could I have been so wrong? I keep thinking about the night– the night and the morning of the accident– how I called you in a panic because I thought that I had hit Sarah, and you told me to not jump to conclusions, Brady. Don’t turn yourself in, Brady. You made me feel innocent, even though when I didn’t believe that I was, even though now we know that you knew I was. And instead of coming forward, what did you do? You hung me out to dry. So my question is, why did you do that to– no, I have a better question. How could you do that to Sarah?

All she’s never done my whole life is disappoint me. You know, when she abandoned me, I was– you know, I was just a little boy. But even then, some part of me somehow understood that it was the best thing that ever happened to me. And yet when she showed up here in Salem claiming to have changed, I just– I just forgot about all the– the bad times and the terrible disappointments. And I just– I just turned back into that stupid little boy who wanted his mum.

Baby, I’m so sorry. I encouraged her to come here. I’m so sorry.

What are you sorry for? You didn’t– you didn’t do anything wrong. Your heart was in the right place like it always is. I mean, Sarah, when she first showed up at our– our wedding, or what was supposed to be our wedding, and she told me that I am Victor’s son and heir, I– Finally, I just felt so vindicated, so, well, self-important. And then as she started to just work her way into our lives, I– well, from then on, I just only let myself see what I wanted to see, which is my mum. She’d somehow transformed into a person of character, someone I could trust.

Hey. Of course you saw her that way. So did I. She was very good at playing that part.

I should have seen through it. I know who she is, who she was, how she treated me when I was a child– How she could just abandon me without looking back. How could I not see the signs? How could I not see that she was just the same heartless drunk she’s always been?

Because it wasn’t obvious. It wasn’t obvious at all. She hid it really well.

But I’m her son. I should have known. My god, Sarah, I– I left her all alone with our daughter. I– I trusted her with our little girl. What the hell was I thinking?

Do not do that. Do not do that. She never hurt Victoria.

Thank God.

It’s you who she hurt so terribly. And that– that breaks my heart.

Please– please don’t let it. Please, all she did to me was remind me how awful she is. But you– look at what she did to you. And all because– she hurt you worse than anyone else because I deluded myself. I– I so desperately, so stupidly wanted to believe that she’d changed so I allowed this to happen. I will never forgive myself. [melancholic music]

Babe, please don’t do that to yourself. Please. You had nothing to do with my accident.

Of course, I did. I deluded myself. I should have known that my mum wasn’t sober. Should’ve known she’s still the same wretched human being she’s always been, who clearly just passed on all her wretched genes to me. I was so enraged at Brady, I was going to murder him. And then you had– you had to lie to the police to save him from me. And you may have to– you might have to face the consequences of that. You might have to pay the price for what I did.

No, no, no. I am not going to be charged with perjury, I– especially now that I remember seeing Fiona behind the wheel. When– when EJ threatened me, when he wouldn’t let me retract my statement, I didn’t remember. But now, we have proof. She– she confessed to us.

Yeah, to us. God knows what she’s saying to the cops. When Jada showed up here last night to arrest her, she– she did that before we called . How– how could she have known?

It must have been Eric. He was grilling me earlier about the accident and maybe he went to the police.

Well, we have to go and set the record straight and get Brady out of jail. And not just because he doesn’t deserve to be there, but because it’s still the only way Kristin will give us Rolf’s serum, which is the only way to heal your injuries. And that’s the priority, yeah? But after that, when you’re all better, by God, we will make my mum pay for what she’s done. [tense music]

Brady, that was the last thing I wanted for you or for Sarah.

Then why– why did you drink and drive and hit Sarah and then leave her on the ground not knowing whether she was dead or alive? Hey, why didn’t you speak up when I was arrested? Why did you let me take the fall? My last question is, what did I do to deserve this, Fiona?

Nothing. You didn’t deserve this. Of course, you didn’t. And now, for what it’s worth, and I know it’s not much, you at least deserve to understand.

Understand what?

Brady, I wasn’t drunk that night. I was just tipsy. And so I thought it would be safer for me to drive you home than to let you get behind the wheel.

Probably would have been safest just to get a cab.

Don’t you think I know that now?

But that night I thought– I thought we’d be OK. And it was so dark, and– and Sarah, she just appeared out of nowhere. And it all happened so fast. And then when I realized I’d hit someone, I panicked. And when I realized it was Sarah, I panicked even more. Because I knew that if Xander found out, it would be the end of our relationship forever.

I see, so you thought, better– better ruin Brady’s life rather than mine, right? Is that the thinking?

No, it wasn’t premeditated. You were passed out on the seat next to me. And then I just– [panting] –I waited for some help to come for Sarah before I left her there. And then– then my foot went down on the pedal, and then we were gone. My mind was racing and my world was about to end. And there you were, blissfully ignorant!

And then the idea started formulating in my mind before I was even cognizant of it. I’d done some research on– on Xander’s Salem family after I came to town, and I knew that Maggie had been involved in an accident and framed it in a similar manner.

Wow, that’s– that’s– that’s how you got the brilliant idea. Wow.

That’s how I got the terrible idea– the cruel and heartless idea to drive you home to the parking garage and put you in the driver’s seat.

You didn’t just put me in a driver’s seat. You put me in– you put me in hell. You put me in a guilt-ridden hell right up until I found out the truth. And now it’s your turn to suffer. It’s your turn to be in hell.

[sobbing]

Wait, I’m sorry. How do you know Xander Kiriakis’s mom?

She used to come into the bistro. And she was nice at first, really friendly. She even gave me her cheesecake once when I was overworked and totally starving, invited me to come sit with her.

OK. And you did, obviously?

Yeah, because she was nice, like I said. And I don’t know, she seemed kind of lonely, like she just wanted someone to talk to, I guess.

OK, what did you two talk about?

Well, we talked about you a little. I mean, she asked me if I was dating anyone. And–

What did you tell her about me, Sophia?

You– you’re referring to Tate?

Mm-hmm.

Do you regret breaking up with him?

I don’t know. I mean, we weren’t together that long, and we kind of were always a hot mess, so–

Do you miss him?

Yeah, kind of. But I’ll get over it, right? Plenty of other guys out there.

Sure. Yeah. Is that really what you want?

Well, no, no, it’s not what I want. But even if I could forgive Tate for taking his dad’s side for hitting my Aunt Sarah and just driving off, I’m not too sure he’s going to be able to forgive me.

What did you do?

Well, I, kind of, was going through his dad’s room looking for evidence to use against him in the hit-and-run, and Tate caught me. And to be honest, I broke into Brady’s briefcase.

Yeah, I see.

Yeah. And to top it all off, my– ex-BFF Sophia is making a move on him and I don’t know. Pretty sure Tate is, like, into her too, so it kind of feels all hopeless, you know?

I’m sorry, Holly.

Yeah, thanks. Anyway, enough of my sob story. Let’s talk about you. You’re getting married in the most romantic city in the world, and I’m so excited for you. And I’m really honored to be a part of it. I can’t wait for you and Abigail to fall in love all over again. [giggles] [gentle music]

What’s the big deal? All I told that Fiona woman was that I liked you, but you were seeing someone else.

OK, that’s all? You didn’t say anything else?

What else was there to say? Anyway, uh, she gave me a huge tip, said it was for the nice chat and to keep my mouth shut about serving her a martini.

Wait, she told you that to keep quiet about her drinking?

Yeah, it seemed like she was being playful or something, like, it would be a little inside joke between us. But get this, I ran into her in the square and she asked me how things were going with the guy I like. So I mentioned you, by name this time, and she freaked.

Why would she freak?

I guess I never said your name before, but this time I did. I said, Tate. And I said that you were dating Holly. And that’s when she lost it. Because apparently she lives with Holly’s family and was worried that they would all find out she had a drink at the bistro, that I would tell them. She even threatened me.

No way.

She said it was important I keep my mouth shut because her family thought she was sober. Now I know it was more than that. She also didn’t want them to know that she mowed down Sarah when she was probably smashed out of her mind.

Brady, I prayed that no one would identify your car. I prayed that you wouldn’t be implicated.

OK– I’m– OK, starting to understand here. You setting me up was your fail safe so the cops wouldn’t find you. But what about what I would think? If the cops didn’t track us down, I would just go on believing that I was guilty of this for the rest of my life.

Look, when Sarah came through her surgery and we all thought she was going to be all right, I fully intended to set the record straight. But then when we realized she was paralyzed and knowing that it was all my fault, I just couldn’t.

No, you could’ve. You could have. You could have! You just decided not to.

EJ, we, uh– we need to talk.

If you’re here to defend your mother–

Oh, she can rot in hell for all I care. We’re here to make sure that you release Brady now that you have my mother in custody.

I don’t see how the two are related.

What? Get your head out your ass DiMera.

EJ, Brady is innocent.

I’m not so sure about that.

We just talked to Detective Hunter. Sarah remembers the accident now. She remembers clearly and definitively that my mother was the driver.

But earlier, she remembered it was Brady– signed a sworn statement, in fact. So which version am I meant to believe? [tense music]

Whoa! You look amazing.

Well, you don’t look so bad yourself. And, Holly, thank you so much for coming and being a part of today. Oh, we have a bouquet for you. It’s in the kitchen.

OK, I’ll go grab it. So we have us.

Yeah.

We have the maid of honor. We just need our officiant.

Oh, uh, yeah, that’s right. I– I got a text earlier. I should check that. [knock at door] Uh-oh, I wonder who that could be. JJ.

Hey, Chad. It’s so great to see you, man.

Oh, god. You too. You too.

Abigail.

You must be my brother.

Yes, um, I am. Do you remember me at all?

I wish I did, but I feel a familiar energy with you.

It’s a start.

Since your parents aren’t going to make it, I decided to reach out to JJ. And not only did he agree to make the long flight from South Africa.

You’re looking at a newly ordained minister of the Universal Church of the Interwebs.

He’s going to marry us.

[gasps] That’s amazing. Thank you, JJ.

I’m just excited to be a part of this. The whole way here on the plane, I couldn’t sleep. I just kept thinking that I get to see my sister again. It’s, uh– well, there’s no words for how much it means to me.

Yeah, me too.

And look, I’m– I’m sorry that Mom and Dad aren’t here. I know that Mom’s having a hard time with all this, accepting that you’re her daughter, even with the DNA proof. But I know that deep down, she is happy for you. So am I. I’m just– I’m so happy to have you back. [gentle music]

For god’s sake, EJ, Whatever your personal issues with Brady, you know damn well he doesn’t deserve to be behind bars.

EJ, I– I told you that I wasn’t sure of my memory of seeing Brady behind the wheel. I am sure now it was Fiona. It wasn’t Brady.

I’m– I’m aware of your ever-changing account of events, Sarah, which makes you no more of a reliable eyewitness than a drunken Brady.

What the hell does that mean?

Let’s see. Brady couldn’t remember. Then he confessed. Then he unconfessed. And now he claims that he can remember and that he wasn’t, in fact, driving.

Then there you have it. What else do you need?

Oh, come on. You don’t see how I would be a tad bit skeptical about all this? I mean, really? I’m supposed to believe that Brady’s memory was somehow miraculously restored at precisely the same time as Sarah’s?

EJ, listen to me. Listen to what I’m saying. Why would I be putting all this effort into convincing you that my mother did this if it wasn’t true? You think I want to believe that she’s a monster?

Well, there has to be some reason behind Sarah changing her story the other day and why you two have suddenly become so desperate for me to release Brady. So until I know the whole truth, I will do no such thing.

Brady, when your car disappeared and EJ released you, you have no idea how relieved I was. And I’m so sorry that Xander tried to take the law into his own hands, but I put a stop to that, too.

Oh, you– you did. You did. Am I supposed to say thank you to you? Is that what you want to hear? Your son almost broke my legs for something that you did. As a matter of fact, I think I did– I did thank you. Do you remember how you replied? I do. You threw Sarah’s injury in my face. You made me feel like crap for hurting her when you knew it was what you had done. You remember that?

When I came to see you yesterday, I was so close to confessing everything. I– I know you don’t believe me. This secret has been killing me, Brady.

Fiona, do you really expect me to feel sorry for you?

No. No, I don’t. But I do want you to know that I care about you. We were two lost souls who found each other when we both needed someone. And that means so much to me. I had to pretend that I hated you because everybody thought you had injured my daughter-in-law. Truth is the only person I hate is myself. [sighs] – I’m sorry, Tate. If I had known who Fiona was, what she did, I would have said something sooner.

No, it’s OK. You couldn’t have known, Sophia. Nobody knew.

Oh my god. And Holly, she was so awful to you, trying to dig up dirt on your dad when he was innocent the whole time.

Yeah, but she didn’t know that, obviously.

True. But I wouldn’t be surprised if after all of this, she comes crawling back to you, apologizing like crazy now that she knows your dad isn’t the one who ran over her precious Aunt Sarah.

I doubt it. I mean, things did not end well, as you know. So we’ll see, I guess.

Yeah, we’ll see.

Hey, Holly.

JJ, hi. Oh, my god!

It’s so good to see you.

It’s great to see you. So good of you to come.

Are you kidding? I wouldn’t miss it.

OK, so are we all ready?

Yeah, I will be. You’re just going to have to bear with me. Uh, I am officially ordained, but I’m a novice at the whole marrying people deal.

Well, you’re going to kill it.

[chuckles] OK, let’s get this show on the road.

Oh, I just got to put on some music. I got to get my phone.

Oh, I got it. [tense music]

I’m excited.

Everything OK, Abby?

Yeah. No, everything’s OK. I think your phone is dead.

What? No, I had a full charge earlier.

Uh, it’s– it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. I have the perfect song on my phone.

Are you sure you’re OK? You look a little pale.

Yeah, I can get you some water.

No, nobody. You guys, stop fussing– stop fussing over me. I am a nervous bride. That’s all this is, nerves. [laughs]

EJ, this is ridiculous. I mean, it should be obvious why Sarah and I want Brady released. He’s– he’s my family and Sarah’s friend. And she feels just terrible that her false testimony got him here.

EJ, you can’t prosecute two suspects. You have to let one of them go.

I’ve already been forced to release Brady once. I’m not going to let him go again unless I’m % certain he is innocent.

Well, he is innocent. My mother is guilty. Didn’t the police take her statement?

Not yet.

Why the hell not?

It’s a little thing called due process. I think you’d be familiar. Ms. Cook is entitled to have her counsel present.

Well, whatever. Sarah remembers the accident. She remembers that my mother was driving. And now you tell me that Brady remembers, too. And I’ll– I’ll give you my testimony right now.

What testimony? You weren’t an eyewitness.

Not to the hit-and-run, but my mother just confessed to me right after I stopped her from pushing Sarah down the stairs to keep her quiet. How’s that for a witness? EJ, come on. It’s time to let this one go. Brady didn’t do it.

I am the victim of this crime. Brady does not deserve to be one, too. EJ, please. You have to let him go. – You really expect me to believe that you care about me? [tense music] You understand that if my brother hadn’t been so determined to get to the bottom of this, hadn’t pressured me to figure out what the hell happened that night and remember, the truth would have never come out? And you wouldn’t have said a word, would you?

[sobbing]

Oh, yeah, that’s what I thought.

Brady, no.

No, I don’t want to– listen. I don’t want to hear from you. I don’t want you to say anything to me. I don’t ever want to see your face again. And I’m so sorry that I met you.

Hey, can I ask a favor of you?

Of course, Tate, anything.

Well, I don’t know what the holdup is getting my dad cleared. But what you know about Fiona, maybe it could help in some way. So would you be willing to talk to the police about what happened between you two and possibly even testify if it comes to that?

Definitely. I would do anything for you, Tate. Anything to help you and your family.

Really? Wow. Thank you, Sophia.

You’re such a good son. You know that? Your dad is so lucky to have you.

I’m really lucky to have a friend like you. [gentle music]

I know that, uh, this isn’t the most conventional situation for a wedding. But I want you to know that it’s an honor and a privilege to be here because I love you both. And if this helps you find your way back to each other, then I’m beyond grateful that I can be a part of it.

We’re grateful for you. Thank you for doing this.

Yeah. Thank you, JJ.

Thank you for including me. It means the world to me. I mean that. Sorry, I got to consult the old cheat sheet here. OK, everybody ready?

Ready.

Ready.

We are gathered here in the presence of this witness to join Chad Michael DiMera and Abigail Johanna Deveraux together in matrimony. The contract of marriage is the most solemn one– one not to be entered into lightly, but thoughtfully and seriously, and with the deep realization of its obligations and responsibilities. If there’s anyone here that can show a just cause of why this couple should not be lawfully joined together, let them speak now or forever hold their peace. [giggles] OK. Chad, please repeat after me. I, Chad, take you, Abigail, for my lawful spouse.

I, Chad, take you, Abigail, for my lawful spouse, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health as long as I live.

And Abigail, please repeat after me. I, Abigail, take you, Chad.

I, Abigail, take you, Chad, as my lawful spouse, to have and hold from this day forward–

–for better or worse, rich or poorer, in sickness and in health as long as I live.

Chad, please repeat after me as you put the ring on Abigail’s finger. With this ring, I thee wed.

With this ring, I thee wed.

And Abigail.

With this ring, I thee wed.

Now, by the power vested in me by the almighty internet, you are now lawfully married. You may kiss the bride.

Yay! [claps]

I wish I could say that my memories came flooding back.

But I, um, I can honestly say that I– I feel closer to you than I ever have before.

I can’t believe EJ just stormed out of here without saying anything. Maybe we should have told him everything.

You mean that his sister is blackmailing us and that you set out to kill Brady? No, baby, we cannot trust EJ with that information.

Of course, not.

Look, I think that EJ knows that he has to do the right thing. I just– I pray that that’s what he’s doing. [tense music]

Back again so soon.

Get up.

Why?

Today is your lucky day, that’s why. I’m dropping the charges against you.

Now get the hell out of my sight before I change my mind.

[bell rings]

Well, damn, I’m so sorry. Lunch is over. I talked so much that you didn’t even get a chance to eat.

It’s OK. I have work release anyway so I’ll just grab something then.

OK, great. Well, thank you so much for everything.

It’s no problem. And, hey, just let me know about talking to the police or testifying, whatever you need, OK?

OK.

See you later.

OK. See you.

Here we are.

Thank you.

And if I may, I’d like to make a toast to the bride and the groom. I have to admit, uh, that I was nervous about seeing you, Abigail, especially after the way Mom felt when she did. [gentle music] Now, I’m just sorry I didn’t reach out sooner, even if it was to video chat or talk to you on the phone.

My mother– oh, yes, I was talking on the phone to my brother, JJ. My mom had a hard time accepting that I was actually her daughter Abigail.

Wait, what do you mean? Didn’t you two just talk on the phone last night?

Daytime Soap Opera Short Recaps

B&B logo

Recap written by Suzanne

Taylor fills Steffy in on everything that’s been happening to hear lately, with her health, and with Ridge.

Brooke demands to know what Ridge was doing with Taylor, and why he didn’t tell her about it. After he explains, she is mollified, but she insists that they do the Yab-Yum pose, like he did with Taylor (except sexier).

Liam finds Hope, working late, and shows her a promo he made for Hope For The Future. It’s all about how great Hope is. She’s very touched, but it’s over-the-top. He confesses that he still thinks about her all of the time, and he wishes they had a future. He kisses her, shocking her. She doesn’t know what to say.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Kate, are you in there? I wanted to talk to you about the script– oh, hey.

Hey. How’s the back?

It’s a lot better.

Yeah. No thanks to me.

Yeah, you definitely did a number on me yesterday.

Aw, I’m sorry about that.

Mm-hmm.

But I promise you I’ll be a little more gentle next time. [dramatic music]

But don’t be too gentle, OK?

No?

Hey, you cheating bitch!

[suspenseful music] [exhales heavily]

Cheating bitch.

[soft music]

Mm.

Morning.

Morning. [both chuckle]

Oy.

So much for that not happening again.

[sighs]

Huh.

Hey.

Hey, Sweetness. Thought you could use this.

Mm, aren’t you a godsend, as usual?

Mm. How’d the surgery go?

It was good. We anticipate a full recovery.

Well, we’re just lucky to have you.

Ah, thank you. But I can’t take all the credit. I have the very best team there is.

Hmm. Well, I hope that team didn’t include Dr. Mark Greene. [dramatic music]

No, Clyde, I haven’t left yet. I’m heading to the airport in a little while. Yeah, I get it. If I ever want to see my mother again, I have to fly to Paris and murder Chad DiMera.

[somber music]

[sighs] You lucky lady, Abby. [chuckles] I hope you know that you were so lucky…

To have a man love you like that. [sighs] Now he thinks he loves me like that.

Oh, my God, I don’t– I don’t know how I’m doing this to you, Chad. I don’t know. I don’t know. [door clicks open]

[sighs] Oh, my God. I didn’t know you had gone out.

Well, you know, I had to get a… bouquet for my bride. It is our wedding day, after all.

Oh.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[dramatic music]

Oh, good morning.

Good morning. I’m not interrupting, am I?

No, just sending a text to Felicity.

You didn’t come to bed last night.

Yeah, I– I just got busy blocking all those scenes and then passed out on the couch.

Oh, yeah, you must be so exhausted. These soap opera hours are worse than a baker’s.

I’ll be fine.

Yeah.

How about you? How’d you sleep?

Ah, well, besides missing you in bed last night, believe it or not, I actually got a full eight hours. I was so exhausted yesterday.

Right, yeah. Hey, how’s your– how’s your back?

Mm, it’s still a little bit stiff, but it’s actually feeling much better. Thanks for asking.

I’m glad to hear that.

Yeah. Yeah, I still cannot believe that tying my shoe is what took me out.

Yeah. Yeah, it’s always the– it’s always the thing you least expect that does a number on you.

So you have a problem with Mark Greene?

As a matter of fact, I do, Sweetness. I know how much you respect him. I mean, you trusted him to run the test on Abigail’s DNA, right?

Yeah, I did, because he’s a very competent physician. He’s incredibly thorough.

I got to tell you, my issue with Mark Greene is that test and the results.

Oh, come on. Just say it. What about the results?

Well, looks like Dr. Greene lied. He faked the results.

Why can’t you just hire a professional to take out Chad? I’m aware I’m cheap labor. But you’d think, for a job like this– No, I already told you. I understand what happens if I don’t cooperate. What if I get caught? What if I–what if I fail? I mean, my younger brother and sister, they depend on me. Don’t get caught. That’s your advice. Yeah, why didn’t I think of that? No, I don’t intend to tell my other sister anything. She’s busy wedding planning.

Oh, my goodness, they are so beautiful.

Yeah, they’re all your favorites. I mean, all of them. Or they used to be. I don’t know. Those work as a bouquet, right?

They’re perfect.

OK.

Yes, of course. It’s so thoughtful of you. [chuckles] It’s really nice.

Why are you crying? Something wrong?

No, no. Everything’s wonderful, amazing. I’m just– [sighs] I’m just feeling a lot today, obviously, you know. And I was looking at this picture of you and Abby and– I mean you and me. And… [sighs] We’re so happy.

Yeah, we were happy. It was our wedding day.

Yeah.

We’ll be that happy again, as happy as we were in that photo.

Mm.

We will.

I want that with you, Chad.

But I–

Chad, I’m not her.

[sighs] Oh, where is it?

What you looking for?

My bra. You seen it? [dramatic music]

I’m assuming this is yours.

Ah, thank you.

Thank you.

Seen my bracelet anywhere?

What’s it look like?

It’s plain gold. I must have left it in the living room. Why can’t I find anything? [sighs]

Steph, you all right?

Sure. Why wouldn’t I be?

I don’t know. You seem a little jumpy.

Jumpy?

Yeah, like you just tripped an alarm off in the middle of a bank robbery and now you’re waiting on the cops to show up.

No, I–I– [sighs]

What?

Well, you said it before. We agreed that we weren’t going to do this anymore.

We did. But then things happen.

Mistakes happen. And I think it’s best for both of us if we just–if we just forget this one ever did.

Steph, hang on–

[sighs]

Mm, can you zip me up? I’m still a little sore when it comes to twisting.

Sure.

[zipper scratches]

Thank you.

So you want to– want to drive to set together?

Oh, no. Actually, Kate wanted to make sure that my back was fully healed, so she postponed all my scenes until tomorrow.

All of them?

Yeah, you didn’t get the email?

No, I must have– honestly, I just– I haven’t even checked my email yet today.

Mm, well, I’m sure it’s in there.

Must be.

Hmm.

Well, hey, I guess that means I get a little more time to prepare for directing you and Alex in bed.

Right. Uh-huh, I guess so. And you are sure that you are still OK with that, hmm?

Yeah, of course.

OK, because you did just bring it up.

It was a joke.

OK. And you are sure that you are not feeling jealous again like at the photo shoot?

Jeal–I mean, yeah, what’s there even to be jealous about? You and Alex, it’s all just pretend, right?

Right. Comes with the job.

Yeah.

All right, so I will see you later.

If you’re not headed to set, then where you off to?

Oh, I was just gonna stop by the bakery, check in with Felicity, see if she needs anything. What about you? You want anything? You want a doughnut, bear claw, anything?

Just surprise me.

All right. Mwah. See you later.

So you think that Mark Greene lied about the test results.

Yes, I do.

[scoffs]

I do. Listen, baby, you know that I had this feeling that something was off with Abigail from the moment Chad and Jack found her.

Yeah, I was aware of that, but I thought that you were letting it go.

We couldn’t let it go, not with all the warning signs. I mean, she lied to Stephanie about talking to you on the phone. And when I asked her about it, she got defensive. And what about Jennifer’s reaction to seeing her, her own mother? So I came to the hospital yesterday, and I asked Dr. Greene to rerun the DNA test.

You did not. We talked about that. It is a violation of Abigail’s rights to run her DNA without her knowledge. You had no right to do that.

I didn’t have her DNA tested. I brought in new samples. And I told Dr. Greene they belonged to Abigail and Thomas.

But they didn’t?

No, they belonged to you and me. Dr. Greene was happy to run the test.

On our samples.

Yeah, but of course, he didn’t know that.

Well, what did he tell you the results were?

Turns out, it was a perfect match. According to Dr. Greene, you’re my mommy.

Look, Clyde, I have to go. Don’t want to miss my plane, right? But I need your assurance that the minute that Chad is taken care of and the widow DiMera transfers the money to your accounts that you’re gonna let our mother go. Sure, why wouldn’t I take your word for it?

Mark.

[laughs] There you are. Hey, just the person I wanted to see. You got my text, obviously.

Yeah.

Well, Felicity, there’s something I need to talk to you about.

Is it–is it about Abigail?

What do you mean you’re not her?

I– I have a different face, Chad. And I don’t have most of my memories. And the woman in that photo is not the same woman that you’re marrying today.

Well, I’m not the same either.

I mean, she and I, you and I, that– that photo was taken a long time ago. We’ve been through a lot since then. You know, some of it was bad, like losing you.

Chad.

But some of it was very, very good.

Look, it doesn’t matter to me what you look like or what you remember. All that really matters to me is you.

Are you sure about that?

Yes. And, look, you remember the most important part, which is that you love me, right? And we love each other.

Yeah, I remember our love…

OK, good.

Strongly and clearly.

Yeah, well…

You see it all over my face.

That’s why you wanted to get married today, right, so you could remember the rest?

Yeah, it is. I just–

Are you having second thoughts?

Look, I know you met my patient Abigail in the park the other day, but why do you think I want to talk to you about her? [light music]

Hey, Felicity, Dr. Greene.

Johnny, what’s going on?

Not much. Just, I’m sorry to bother you guys. I was just–I was looking for Chanel. She’s not in the bakery, is she, Felicity?

No, I haven’t seen her yet.

Hmm.

[sighs] Coffee?

No, I’m good. I–I should get to the office.

Which one?

Both, actually. I need to go check on some promotional materials for “Body & Soul,” and then I need to go to the mayor’s office to sit in on a planning meeting for the board.

Sounds like a busy morning.

Aren’t they all?

For you. I don’t know how you keep them all straight.

Honestly, I don’t know if I do. I’m surprised I haven’t had the mayor call a press conference to deny that Faith’s evil twin is poisoning the water supply in Pine View.

I’d like to see that.

[sighs]

Steph, you sure you don’t have a minute just to maybe have a little bite to eat?

No, I should go. This has been– Well, I’ll see you.

[chuckles] All right. [sighs] [dramatic music] [clears throat]

So Mark Greene told you that our DNA is a perfect match for mother and son?

That’s right. So it’s obvious that he faked the tests.

Look, I know that this looks terrible.

It is terrible.

But let’s not jump to conclusions.

What other conclusion could there be?

I don’t know.

You know, there is one way to prove if Mark Greene really did fake both tests.

How?

Well, he mentioned that the lab still had the original samples from Abigail and Jack.

So if I reran those tests–

Well, you said you wouldn’t do that. You were adamant about it.

I wasn’t gonna steal a sample from Abigail. But since she consented to give us that sample in the first place, I am just going to rerun the test, proving the authenticity of the original sample. It won’t be a violation of anything.

OK, so you’re gonna do it?

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I’ll do– I’ll do it myself.

OK, the sooner, the better, baby.

Yeah, OK. I’m on it. Can’t wait.

Of course I still want to marry you.

[laughs]

Of course I do. Of course I do.

Whew, great.

I just– [sighs] I’m just feeling a lot. That’s all.

Well, yeah, that I can see. I can see that, yeah.

Did I not used to be this much of a basket case?

No, you always– you had–always had a big heart.

Oh. Oh, wow. That is a yes. Oh, wow.

[laughs] No, it’s not.

Oh, no.

Look, what I’m–

You don’t have to act in a certain way. And you don’t–you certainly don’t have to second-guess any of your feelings.

I’ll take you any way I can get you.

[chuckles]

Good, cause you’re getting me, all of this. [laughs]

Good. Well, I mean good because, you know, we’re–we’re all set. Everything’s paid for. Holly’s on her way back from seeing her mom. Officiant is on the way. You got the dress?

I do.

You can’t say that yet.

Oh, my goodness. I mean I have the dress…

Good.

And the bouquet. Thank you.

Mm-hmm.

In less than an hour, you’re gonna be my wife.

[phone ringing]

Hey, Chanel. Bye, Chanel.

[sighs]

[chuckles]

Oh.

Huh?

What?

[laughs] You and Stephanie? Since when?

Ah, it just sort of happened.

OK.

Well, when you were late to set the other day, I asked her to run lines with me.

Oh, for the love scene, huh?

That’s right.

Well, I guess they call that method acting.

[chuckles] That’s what I said. Anyway, we’re just friends, with the occasional benefit.

OK, whatever, whatever, OK? You are just my fictional boyfriend. So whatever you do in your personal life, in your real life, is not my business.

Well, I appreciate that. Thank you. But you said you wanted to talk to me in private. So what’s going on?

Yeah, I’m sorry for the cryptic message. It’s just that Johnny’s birthday is next week, and I want to throw him a surprise party.

Huh.

And I need your help. [soft music]

Chanel hasn’t been by Sweet Bits at all?

Not today.

Did she text you that she was stopping by?

No, sorry.

Nah, that’s all good. We must have just got our signals crossed. Well, thanks anyway. [light music]

Hey, tell me again why you brought up Abigail before.

I know who she reminds me off.

Who?

Mom.

[phone ringing]

It’s your Uncle Steve.

I mean, you can answer it if you want.

I don’t need that negativity.

What do you mean? What negativity? [tense music]

[clears throat] He called last night.

What did he want?

Just wanted to check in, see if you… had any more memories come back. And I told him we were getting married. He expressed his concern.

Oh, he still doesn’t trust me from the whole phone call mix-up.

Whatever, I don’t know what his problem is. I don’t care. You and I, we’re getting married. There’s nothing he can do to change that.

[chuckles]

Oh, you’re taking my clothes off already. You have to wait till we say I do.

Chad, it’s Steve. Listen, as soon as you get this message, you need to call me back. It’s urgent. It’s extremely urgent. Please call me back.

[dramatic music] [both moan and chuckle]

What?

No, it’s dumb.

No, say it. What?

Nothing.

What?

No, I just think I’ve… watched too many Disney movies with Charlotte.

[laughs] Oh, like where a kiss from a handsome prince has magical powers and suddenly she wakes up or gets all of her memories back?

I told you it was dumb.

No, it’s sweet. It’s sweet.

[clears throat]

And no, my memories didn’t come flooding back. But it was a very, very nice kiss. [chuckles] It’s, like, full-body feels. Like, my heart starts racing, and my cheeks get all flushed, and I just– it’s these moments where I feel– [sighs] I feel like I can remember everything that we had before, you know?

Everything?

[chuckles] Mostly I feel what a lucky lady I was–I am to have such an amazing man like you.

I’m the lucky one.

Hmm.

I want to kiss you a lot. But I have to go get ready. [laughs] Mwah.

See you at the altar.

Mwah. Yes.

[door slams]

Well?

I reran the tests.

And?

I used Jack and Abigail’s original samples. And…they do not match.

You’re sure?

Yeah. There is no way that those two people are related, which means–

That’s not our girl.

No. Whoever that woman is is not Abigail.

I’m sorry, baby.

Yeah, so am I.

I know how much you wanted it to be true.

Yeah. Poor Jack and Chad.

Yeah. OK, well, we’ll deal with that as soon as we can. But you know what else this means?

It means that Mark Greene falsified the results. Why?

So Abigail reminds you of Mom, huh?

Yeah.

Yeah, I can see that now that you mention it. Some of her mannerisms are kind of similar.

Yeah.

Anyway, the reason I wanted to talk to you is because I wanted to let you know that I have to go out of town for a little while. There’s some business I have to take care of overseas that has to do with Mom and Dad’s estate. Something I have to clear up. [light music]

[sighs]

I miss them.

So do I. Anyway, I’m not gonna be gone for very long. But while I’m out of the country, you’re in charge of Aaron, OK?

I love you, Feliss.

Love you too.

And I hope you know there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you or for this family.

[sighs]

You want my help throwing Johnny a party. Why? Can’t you just get somebody from the mansion staff to help you?

Well, the party is not at the mansion.

Where is it?

Well, I thought it would be fun to have it on set.

On set, on, like, the “Body & Soul” set?

Yeah.

Why?

[laughs] Well, that’s the only place I could think of that would surprise him. And I don’t trust anyone at the mansion to not tip him off.

Ah.

Although he’s so focused with work that I doubt he would notice it anyway.

Oh, focused on work and on us.

Yeah. Yeah, unfortunately, he is still a little bit… tense about having to direct us in a love scene.

Hmm.

I thought he was over it. But then this morning, I was getting this vibe.

What, like a jealous vibe?

Mm, a vibe like he doesn’t fully trust me around you.

But I mean, he knows nothing’s going on between us, right?

Yeah, of course. But even still, I think it’s still triggering for him, knowing that he’s gonna have to direct us in that love scene.

Ah.

[sighs] So… I thought that maybe it would be nice to just throw him a party on set. That way, he realizes that the set is a friendly place, you know?

Yeah, for sure. You’re a damn good wife, Chanel.

Well, I try.

Mm. Whatever you need, I’m here for you.

All right. Well, thank you.

Of course.

All right, so I will come up with a plan, and then I will reach out to you and let you know, OK?

Sounds good. Yeah, I just want everybody to feel comfortable too.

All right.

I’ll see you on set.

I’ll see you on set.

[groans, sighs] [soft music]

And I can trust you to keep this to yourself, right?

Of course. Johnny will not hear a word about this from me.

Good. Because my husband is totally clueless.

Well, let’s keep it that way.

[groans]

[unsettling music]

[light music]

Felicity, hey.

Hi, Chanel.

So, hon, I need to ask you a favor. I’m throwing Johnny a surprise party next week, and I wanted to see if maybe you could help me with the cake.

OK.

All right, nice.

Oh, and Johnny was here just looking for you.

Oh.

Oh, is this what I think it is? Ah. Oh. [dramatic music] Oh, Alex. What am I gonna do about you?

Johnny, hi.

Hi.

Hey, we just got these promotional posters in. Nice shot of Chanel and Alex, huh?

Yeah, great.

Yeah. Well, I’m gonna make some calls and figure out where we’re gonna place these.

OK, see you.

Yeah. [tense music]

[phone ringing]

Is this Mrs. Chad DiMera?

[sighs] Not yet, but I will be soon. I’m a complete wreck about it.

Hey, I know this is a big step. But just remember, the second that you two tie the knot, we get Mom back.

I know. I keep reminding myself of that. But it’s–[scoffs] It’s really hard, Mark. I mean, I feel horrible about what we’re doing to Chad. It’s so awful. He’s such a great man. He does not deserve this.

Don’t tell me you’re starting to have real feelings for this guy.

Yes? No?

Yes. Yes, actually, I am. [scoffs] I see how much he loved his wife, how kind and generous and passionate he is. And how could I not have feelings for him? How could I not feel horrible about how we are deceiving him?

I know how hard this is for you.

You need to stay focused on the job at hand, OK?

I know. I know. [sighs] Don’t worry. The officiant’s on his way. Everything will be fine. Oh, yesterday when we got interrupted, you were trying to tell me something. There’s something that Clyde wants you to do?

Don’t worry about that. It’s not important.

Mark Greene and whoever this woman really is who’s pretending to be Abigail, they need to be stopped.

This is just awful.

Yeah, it’s awful. Now, I’m gonna contact Jada, of course, but our first priority is stopping Chad before he marries that woman. I tried to talk him out of it yesterday, but he wouldn’t listen.

OK, I’ll do everything I can to get ahold of him.

All right. All right, babe.

[sighs]

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[dramatic music]

[door slams]

Johnny, hey. Hey, where have you been? I texted you, like, a million times.

I know. I know. I’m–I’m sorry. I was busy shooting the rest of today’s scenes. What–what– what happened to you?

Oh, God, you’re not gonna believe it. I somehow threw my back out.

How’d that happen?

[sighs]

Hey, Steph.

Jada, thank you so much for meeting me. ,::, Are you sure that I’m not taking you away from Rafe?

Oh, yeah. He turned in a while ago. Actually, he’s probably up reading his, like, ,-page book on Oppenheimer. He just watched the movie, and now he’s obsessed.

Aw. I’m so glad he’s doing OK.

Yeah. He’s doing very well.

Oh, I’m so glad.

Mm-hmm. So…what’s up?

Well, to be honest, I’m actually kind of freaking out. I–I just had to talk to someone. I don’t know what to do about–

About what? Stephanie, what happened?

[sighs] I had sex with Alex. [light music]

“And that smile, oh, that smile, as sweat slides down his”– oh, wait, wait. First Faith says to him, “‘I love you, Alex– Arrow.’ “Then Arrow rips off his shirt, “buttons flying everywhere, as we zoom in on those washboard abs.” [knock at door] Ay. I’m coming. Coming. Oh, my God, Hattie! No, no, no, no, no, no, no. [jazzy music] [crickets chirping]

[sighs] [tense music]

I don’t believe it. I mean, when–when you said that maybe Fiona was the one that was driving the car that hit Sarah, I didn’t think there was any way in hell that that could be possible, but now…

Brady. Brady!

[groans] What’s go–what’s going on?

I think I hit someone.

Yeah.

Now I’m positive.

She was the one behind the wheel. I wasn’t the one driving the car. It was Fiona.

What are you doing?

What I have to do. You’re the only one that knows the truth.

No, that’s not true. Eric knows. He’s onto you.

He doesn’t know anything. I’m sorry, my dear. You know I’m very fond of you, but you are about to have a terrible accident.

You can’t do this! No, stop!

I’m not doing anything. Someone will find you at the bottom of the stairs. Maybe Maggie. Maybe my son. And they’ll just assume you lost control of the chair.

No! Oh, God, no! Please stop!

Such a pity. Such a pity.

No!

But I suppose no one will be the wiser.

No!

Except for me.

Oh, Xander, thank God.

What the hell is going on here, Mum? Why are you threatening to kill my wife?

I–she–

Because she–she’s the one that put me in this chair. She doesn’t want anybody to find out. That’s why.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[sighs] You are not gonna believe this, Johnny.

Try me.

So on the way to set earlier, there was a little extra time, so I went and I stopped by Sweet Bits. And then on my way back, I bent down to tie my shoe, and then all of a sudden, my back, it just went out.

Just like that, huh?

Yeah. Crazy, right? I mean, I’ve never had any issues with my back before. And you know how much of a yogi I am. So it was just really bad timing. And then Abe and Kate, they ended up having to cancel my love scenes with Alex for today. No choice.

I know. I heard.

Yeah, we didn’t even get a chance to rehearse them. [dramatic music]

[door clicks open]

Chanel, I–

Hey there, Chanel, Johnny boy. What’s going on, girl? How you feeling?

[sighs]

[light music]

You–you slept with Alex?

I know. I know.

Hey, I am not judging, OK? I just thought that you both agreed that you wouldn’t, you know, go there.

No, we did. We did agree.

Hmm. So then how did this–

I–I was at the hospital earlier to do some PR work for “Body & Soul.”

Mm-hmm.

And Chanel was running late. So–

So?

So Alex asked me to rehearse this love scene with him in the hospital room.

Oh, I see. So he pulled the whole, come have sex– I mean come rehearse this love scene with me?

[sighs] Exactly.

Mm.

And, well, one thing… led to another.

Mm. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Are you telling me you guys slept together on set on the hospital bed?

Yeah. We did. Oh, Jada, my God, what was I thinking?

I guess you weren’t thinking.

No. And neither was Alex. [both sigh]

I remember. [tense music] I was–I was–I was in the passenger seat of the car during–during the night of the accident. Fiona must have moved me and put me in the driver’s seat when she took me home that night.

Just like I said.

Just like you said.

I don’t believe it. All this time, I thought I was guilty, Eric. I was ready to go to prison for a decade.

[sighs] You know what? Thank God you remembered just in the nick of time. I mean, another hours, and you would’ve accepted that plea.

[sighs] I got to thank you. Brother, thank you. If it wasn’t for you, I never would have known that I was– that I wasn’t the one driving that night, that I wasn’t the one that hit her, I wasn’t the one that left her there. I would have never known that I was innocent of this if it hadn’t been for you.

Get away from my wife.

Xander, darling, please listen to me.

No, you listen to me. Get away from her now! Darling, sweetheart. Tell me, what–what happened?

Brady wasn’t driving. It was her. It was your mother.

What?

It’s true, baby. It was. I remember. I remember seeing her in the driver’s seat.

Darling, are you– are you absolutely sure?

I’m sure. Besides, she admitted it.

Mum… is this true?

Yes. It’s true. I’m the one that hit Sarah.

What does she think I’m doing, writing a Facebook post? This is a soap opera. And Leo Stark, the artist formerly known as Lady Whistleblower, is the very busy head writer. [knock at door] No way, Hattie. I’m on a deadline here.

Leo–

No time to schmooze or, worse, be raked over the coals.

Leo, open the door.

And the last time I saw you, you threatened my life.

Leo, Leo, it isn’t Hattie. It’s Dr. Evans. [quirky music]

Dr. Evans? As in Marlena?

Mm-hmm.

No, no, no. I am not falling for that bait and switch again.

Come on, Leo. What are you talking about? It’s me, I promise.

OK. If you really are Dr. Evans, then what’s the answer to this question that only my therapist would know?

OK, go ahead.

What was the name of my best friend at sleepaway camp? Wrong! I didn’t have any friends until I was . And I only spent one night at sleepaway camp before I had a panic attack and my mother had to drive eight hours through the Adirondacks to pick me up.

You didn’t give me a chance to answer.

Oh. I guess I didn’t, did I? OK, then. What was the working title of the book I wanted to write, thought about writing, but then realized nobody would want to read?

Oh… “This is My Life So Far: A Tale of Charm and Chutzpah.”

OK. And what is the name of the doctor that I had the hots for but he turned out to be straight as an arrow?

Mark Greene.

Dr. Evans, it really is you.

I tried to tell you.

I’m sorry. Ow, I’m sorry. I thought you were Hattie. She was incensed with me over these death scenes I wrote at “Body & Soul” where Charlemagne falls stories down an elevator shaft, screaming the entire way down. [sighs] I am telling you, this show is messing with my head. I am up all night every night, eating muesli and watching old telenovelas. Is that why you’re here, because I’ve been seen muttering to myself all over town?

No, but we should talk about that. But “Body & Soul” is the reason I’m here.

Mm, I’m feeling a little doped up, actually. The muscle relaxers that Kayla gave me are working. My back is feeling a little bit better. But…[sighs] I’m really, really sorry, you guys.

Hey, it’s not your fault. I’m just glad you’re OK. I would have come to check on you sooner, but I had to do those scenes with Bonnie.

Alex, you seem to be in a particularly good mood today.

Yeah?

Yeah.

Well, I mean, I guess Bonnie being so elated that she’s not getting fired kind of rubbed off on me.

Right.

Anyway, Kate said that she would reschedule our love scenes for when you’re feeling a little bit better.

Yeah. Yeah, we’ll see how I feel after these meds wear off. But Kayla says that I should be feeling better by tomorrow.

Great! Great. You guys will be undressing each other in no time.

[chuckles]

[light music]

OK, let’s put this in perspective here. Like I said before, it’s not like this came out of the blue. I mean, you guys were in a relationship before, so, you know, there’s some chemistry there, right?

Yeah, yeah, but Alex was so adamant about, “I think it’s best if we’re just friends.”

Well, he obviously changed his mind.

I don’t know if he did.

Obviously, he did. [laughs]

Mm.

So what did he say after it happened?

Well, we didn’t even get a chance to talk about it. I had to go deal with a PR crisis. And our now former star Hattie stormed off the set without filming her exit scene.

Oof, so you had to make sure that news didn’t get out, right?

Exactly. [sighs] Jada, my whole job is containing fallout. So why am I so bad at doing it in my own life?

I– I don’t understand this. [dramatic music] You were driving the car? [baby crying]

Oh, my sweetheart. She sounds upset. Let me go and take care of–

Sarah, would you– [baby crying] Would you go and see to Victoria? My mother and I, we need… a moment alone.

Because before she tells the cops what happened…

She’s gonna tell the whole story to me.

My father, he fought tooth and nail for me from the beginning, even when I didn’t want to fight for myself. I mean, the facts seemed apparent. But you, you– you knew something was– was wrong about that night, and you kept digging. Eric, if–if you hadn’t– if you hadn’t told me that Fiona and I left that bar that night together, I probably wouldn’t have remembered anything.

Listen, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that Fiona betrayed you the way she did.

[sighs]

Crazy thing is, is I actually– I actually cared about her. I leaned on her when this whole thing happened.

Yeah.

She was the one that told me not to go to the police. And I didn’t understand that at the time, but I sure as hell do now.

Fiona’s living in her own hell.

[sighs] You know she came to visit me? She told me that she had something to confess. I wonder if she was gonna tell me the truth.

Well, obviously, she didn’t.

No, she didn’t, because Kristen– Kristen barged in and interrupted the whole–

Oh, Kristen. Kristen, she said that she was– she was gonna get me out of here. God knows what she’s planning, Eric.

All right, you know what? Stop worrying about Kristen. We’re gonna get you out of here, Brady. And Fiona, she’s gonna pay.

So you’re telling me that after you hit Sarah and left her for dead, you just–you, what, you– you dragged a drunken Brady into the driver’s seat and let him take the fall for you?

I panicked, Xander. I was desperate. And it’s not as though I meant to hit Sarah. It was an accident.

Oh, you–you drove drunk. You knew you were drunk!

I was a hell of a lot more sober than Brady.

Oh. Oh, wow. Really? Yes. Yes, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, please bear in mind that the drunk driver was ever so slightly less sloshed than the drunk passenger.

Listen to me, Xander. After it happened, I did stay with Sarah. I was going to call for help. Really, I was. I had my phone in my hand. And then you arrived. I’m not a monster. I would never have left her there.

But you did leave her there!

[sobs]

You fled the scene! And pinned it on an innocent man. I mean– and then you made yourself completely indispensable to us, never once letting on that– that you were responsible for all Sarah’s suffering! I mean, my God, I– I almost broke Brady’s legs with a baseball bat. I was gonna murder him!

And I stopped you.

Yeah, you stopped it. But you’re still too much of a coward to tell me the truth.

I couldn’t tell you.

Why the hell not?

Because of you.

You’re here because of “Body & Soul,” not because of that unpaid invoice? Because I’m good for it.

No! No, no, no. Abe called and said that you had something important to discuss with me. And he said you had left him a long-winded text.

Let’s see. Sorry, I was so busy with these last-minute product placements.

Mm.

Arrow eats a KIT KAT bar while doing crunches. Oh, Faith feeds a shirtless Arrow some milk of magnesia in bed. Aha! Here it is.

Finally.

OK, so as we all know, Hattie was, like, a total prima donna who complained endlessly and was a real pain in the tush.

Oh.

So we had to kill her off. But she stormed off the set in true diva fashion before we taped her very dramatic death scene but not before cursing out production and taking a bunch of little sandwiches with her from the lunch buffet.

[laughing] Oh, no!

Yeah, “oh, no,” is right. And now yours truly has to come up with a solution. I mean, we were prepared for this possibility. But a bunch of people chitchatting about the death of a very important character off camera, it’s just so undramatic, you know?

Mm.

Especially when we have… alternatives.

Well, if you have some alternatives, that– [jazzy music] No. You–you don’t want me to talk to Hattie, do you?

No, no!

Oh. [laughs]

We do not want to be tangling with Hattie. This is a much simpler ask. Dr. Evans, we need you to fall down an elevator shaft.

What’s the matter, G? You don’t seem very happy about me and Alex getting back to work.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I just–I just don’t– I don’t want you to rush into anything. You know, your health is more important than this job.

I know, I know, but everybody is counting on me. And plus, you know, it costs money every time they have to move scenes around.

Well, that is very thoughtful of you to be so, you know, concerned about the budget.

Mm. All right, you–you OK to get Chanel home?

Yeah, yeah. I think I’m good.

OK, cool.

Yeah.

Get well, champ.

I will.

All right.

[sighs] That was nice of him to stop by.

Johnny, you– you seem a little off.

What? Off? No, I’m–I’m–I’m not off. [dramatic music]

Yeah, you are, OK? So come on, Johnny. Tell me. What’s wrong?

[sighs]

Steph, I am happy to be your sounding board. Really, I am. But I feel like– don’t you think you should be talking to Alex about this, not me?

And I will. I will.

Mm-hmm.

I’m just– I’m just a bit rattled. Actually, freaked out is more like it.

I know, I know, but look, look, look. Like I said before, look, you slept with a guy that you used to go out with. It’s not exactly a scandal. And hey, it–it might be the start of something great.

Yeah. Yeah, maybe. But what if it isn’t? What if this completely ruins our friendship?

Then it wasn’t a very good friendship, was it?

Hold on a minute. [dramatic music]

What? What is it?

Sarah–Sarah told the police that she remembered that I was the one driving the car. Why would she do that? I mean, is she protecting Fiona?

No. I talked to Sarah. She had no idea that you and Fiona were even together.

Then I don’t understand.

I don’t want you to worry about that right now. We’ll get to the bottom of that eventually. But right now, we need to– we need to get Fiona behind bars, where she belongs.

You’re blaming me for this?

No, of course not. Xander, please, try and understand. You’re the only good thing that I ever had in my life. And I’ve fouled it all up, almost from the get-go. One minute, I was feeding you porridge and reading you “Peter Rabbit,” and the next minute, I was on some bender and too ashamed to come home and face my little boy. I knew I was a terrible mother. You’d have been better off without me.

Oh. Oh, is that what you told yourself?

I did. Yes. For every year that we were apart.

And then when Sarah invited me to your wedding, I thought it would be my second chance.

And it was a privilege to see you as a grown man, so handsome and so accomplished, and your lovely wife and–and sweet little Victoria, who’s just as heavenly as you were.

All this time, I– you know, I always thought I took after Dad, Titus… the felon, the–the black sheep.

Turns out, he wasn’t my father at all.

But I am your son, aren’t I? The liar, the reprobate.

Well, at least you’re not an addict. You were spared that. If only I could have resisted.

Resisted what, the siren song of– what was that horrible pub called? The Queen’s Head. Or are you talking about how you’re still on the bottle?

Xander, I was sure that if you knew I’d relapsed, you would never forgive me.

I understand that addiction is an illness, one that you’ve struggled with your whole life. And so yeah, you– you did what addicts sometimes do. You fell off the wagon.

But you didn’t have to drive drunk. And you didn’t have to leave Sarah lying in the street. And you didn’t have to frame an innocent man.

Xander–

See, that’s what I’ll never understand! That’s what I’ll never forgive.

[sighs]

And you’re absolutely sure your memory of the account is correct, Brady? [dramatic music]

%.

Well, I like that you’re so confident. But unfortunately, I’m gonna need a little bit more than just your say-so. Look, this case is going to depend on credible eyewitness testimony.

Go talk to Fiona.

Talk to Sarah.

I believe you’ll find all the proof you need.

Xander, please. You have to understand how desperate I was, a lifetime of feeling bereft.

You know, I might be more inclined to feel something for you, Mum, if I hadn’t just… walked in on you trying to murder the love of my life!

Oh, stop it! I wasn’t actually going to do it.

You threatened to push her down the stairs, on the heels of everything else you’ve done to her!

I know myself.

You sounded determined to me!

I wouldn’t have done it!

I wasn’t thinking clearly. I was panicked.

Right. Course. A lifetime of excuses.

I’m so ashamed of myself. I really am.

Well, I’m just surprised that all that shame hasn’t compelled you to– oh, I don’t know– cut and run. Isn’t that what you usually do?

I should have.

I should have.

But I couldn’t bear to lose you. [crying] Please.

You’re gonna have to bear it, Mum, because you have lost me now. For good.

[sobs]

Forever.

Look, I have already told Abe, in words that dogs and cats understand, I do not want to be in this production.

Oh, come on. It’s just one scene. [jazzy music] You know, if you’re not interested, we’re talking to… Diane Keaton.

[laughs] No, you’re not.

OK, we’re not. But will you do it, pretty please with sugar on top?

Why didn’t Abe ask me about this?

Because, as you said, you already turned him down once. And he thought you might be more receptive to my overtures, given that we have such a wonderful– well, I don’t know that it’s a friendship, per se. You are my therapist. But we have a great rapport, don’t we?

I suppose.

Look, it’ll take all of an hour. The set is down the hall from your office. We could do this on your lunch break. Think about it. You say a few lines. you fall on a mattress. Bing, bang, boom, your acting career begins and ends in the span of eating a poke bowl.

You just don’t quit, do you?

I am bad at so much, but I’m good at being persistent. I’m also really annoying about it. Plus, we are on a shoestring budget. But the fans will go ballistic if they don’t get to see Charlemagne plunge to her untimely death.

If you don’t want to do it for Abe or for the show, would you do it for me?

[scoffs] Nothing. Nothing is wrong. It’s just–just been a– oh, it has been a long day. I’m wiped.

You sure?

Yes. I’m sure. Let’s just– let’s go home, hmm?

OK. Because, you know, before, you seemed like you were OK with the whole love scene thing. But just now, I was…

Was–was what?

Getting a vibe from you.

A vibe?

Mm-hmm.

What sort of vibe?

Like a jealousy vibe.

Jealousy? No. No, there’s–what’s there to be jealous about? It’s not like you and Alex are actually having sex, right? [dramatic music]

Alex. Hey.

Hey, I was literally just texting you. Yeah, I was wondering if maybe we could talk about what happened. We just wrapped a little while ago, and… if it’s not a good time–

No. I think it’s a good idea. [soft music]

OK.

Ouch.

Sorry about that. Do you–do you need anything else?

Yeah, you.

[chuckles]

Coming to bed?

No, no, I’ve actually– I’ve got a bunch of scenes I have to block for tomorrow, so…

Oh, OK.

Yeah.

I guess.

All right.

Johnny?

Hmm?

Could you get me a pill before I go to bed so I’m not tossing and turning all night?

Sure, yeah. I’ll get you a glass of water.

OK. Thank you.

What are husbands for, right? [dramatic music]

[sighs] Can I get you anything? Tea, glass of vino?

No, I’m good.

OK.

How about we just talk?

OK, yeah, let’s– let’s talk. Steph, I hope you know that when I asked you to rehearse those scenes, I wasn’t, like, trying to–

Oh–oh, no. I–I do know. And neither was I.

OK. All right, I just got a little too caught up in the scene. [both chuckle] A little too method.

Oh, of course.

Yeah.

Leo Stark. I mean, who knew he was such a romantic?

[laughs]

Take notes, Nicholas Sparks.

Oh, right? No wonder Johnny was so worried about Chanel and me, not that that would ever, ever happen between her and I. You know, it’s not like you and me. [soft music]

Look, let’s address the elephant in the room. Clearly, we have a physical attraction. There’s always been. But we both know that that’s not enough to build a relationship on.

Right. No, it–it definitely is not. [clears throat]

And–and you said it yourself. You just want to be friends.

Well, that’s what you want, right?

I think that’s for the best. Don’t you?

Absolutely. I messed up a lot of things, Steph. You know, I don’t want to– I don’t want to do that again. And it took us a very long time to get back to this place.

Right. Right, and we both know that… this, you know, being physically involved like we were, demonstrative…

[sighs]

It’s a–it’s a high-wire act, to say the least. And I value our friendship too much to risk it.

I’ll say it one more time. I don’t want to do this.

I know you don’t. But think of it this way. I will spend so much less time on your couch kvetching about what a failure my TV career was before it even began.

Leo, I am psychologically astute. And I am immune to manipulation. That’s what I do for a living. So this–this emotional blackmail will not work on me.

What about bribery? Just throw out a number.

[sighs]

You know, we have spent so much time arguing about why I won’t do this. In that amount of time, we could have done the scene. So I guess I concede.

What? Whoa, whoa, wait. Was that a yes?

That’s a yes.

Oh, my God! Dr. Evans, you are the greatest! Oh, thank you. Thank you.

OK, OK. But there–there is one thing. And this is very serious. I will only do one scene. My twin, Samantha, was the actress in the family. She was the thespian. I am not. I am–I am just a psychiatrist.

And a brilliant one at that.

Yeah. [phone rings] Oh, oh. Sorry. Hold on. Yeah. Hey, is everything all right?

Mom, hi. I was wondering, can you come down to the police station? There’s some good news that Brady and I want to share with you.

Sure. I’ll be right there.

Great.

[sighs] I don’t–I don’t know. Are you sure we should start telling people? I mean, what if–what if–

No, no, no. There’s no what-ifs. Brady, I have no doubts that all the charges against you are gonna be dropped.

[sighs] All right. OK.

You know, I wonder sometimes whether or not Xander knew if his mother was involved all along. [dramatic music]

He was so angry, Eric. He literally wanted to kill me. No, he had no idea.

Yeah, well, we’re about to find out. And he’s gonna find out the hard way.

You know, Mum, the– the rage I felt towards Brady, I– The way I feel now, it feels nothing like that.

‘Cause this isn’t just rage. It’s–

It’s shock and disgust, heartache, shame.

Never in my life did I think I’d have to call the cops on my own mother.

You don’t have to.

Detective Hunter, are you–

I’m up to speed. Fiona Cook, you’re under arrest. [handcuffs clinking]

[dramatic music]

[liquid pouring]

Can you believe it, Nonno? I walked in on my wife– my wife– having sex with her on-screen costar. And what do they do? They act like nothing even happened. Hmm. They lie right to my face, mocking me, humiliating me.

Ah! I was gonna confront her at the hospital. Then I realized there’s not really any point. It’s not like she would admit it. [scoffs] Chanel made me feel like a complete fool for being jealous at all. Well, turns out, I was right. Hmm. I was right, damn it! [glass shatters]

I’m really glad we talked.

Me too. [soft music]

I guess I should probably let you get to bed, then, huh?

Yeah. Yeah, that’s a good– [yawns] Yeah, I’m beat.

Yeah. Yeah, me too. Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow.

Maybe.

Good night.

Good night, Alex.

Abe? Marlena said she is on board. Isn’t that the greatest news? No, just one scene. She was very, very firm. However, I do have an idea to bring Charlemagne back from the dead– I mean, someday, I mean. Yeah, yeah, I guess we’ll see. [jazzy music] [laughter]

This is such wonderful news!

Yes, it is, which we wanted to tell you in person.

[sighs]

I’m glad you did. I’ll hug you, too, as soon as you get your bracelets off. [laughter]

Right. I know. I can’t–I can’t believe it. It’s like I’m getting ten years of my life back just like that.

You know, I understand why Sarah was so confused. She said that the person she saw behind the wheel, she thought was somebody she knew. So I–I assumed it was you. I’m so sorry. [dramatic music]

You two have been there for me every step of the way. And naturally, look, I’m relieved that it wasn’t me. It wasn’t me that hit Sarah. It wasn’t me that put her in that chair. But now I have to– I got to stay the course, and I got to stay in treatment. And I– I just want to make the most of this second chance that I’ve been given.

You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you.

[sniffles] Sarah, I–

I thought I was doing a good deed by having you come to Salem. I–I trusted you with my daughter. I was grateful to you. What an idiot I am.

I don’t know what to say. I’m so, so sorry.

Not as sorry as I am.

Let’s go.

Believe it or not– believe it or not, I– I really do love you.

Let’s go.
